Isaiah 3:1-5:30, 2 Corinthians 11:1-15, Psalms 53:1-6, Proverbs 22:28-29

Today is the 9th day of September welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I’m Brian it is wonderful to be here with you today as it is all the time every day that we gather together around the Global Campfire in the little oasis that we create each day as we come and move forward on our journey through the Scriptures. And our journey has led us to the book of Isaiah which we began yesterday. And we’ll be camping out in Isaiah for a bit. It’s one of the longer books in the Bible. And, so, let's…let’s dive in. Today Isaiah chapters 3 through 5.

Commentary:

Okay. So, we have a strange scenario materializing in Paul’s letter, known as second Corinthians, because for all of the diminishment of comparison in all of the ways that comparison is not a good thing in general but definitely not in the body of Christ Paul is going to step into comparison and he’s going to be comparing himself to others. And Paul says in the letter today, “I don’t think I’m inferior in any way to your super-apostles” which is a very strange…like these are apostles who are full of the Holy Spirit, but also get to wear a cape…like I am a super-apostle above other apostles. And, so, it’s kind of like this weird very, very personal thing going on in this letter, but also yet again another example of how tumultuous it was at the beginning. So, often we’ll read to the book of Acts, and we’ll just have this kind of idea that everything was roses. Jesus ascended to the father, the Holy Spirit came and it was just awesome, when in fact it was a very bumpy road. So, there’s been plenty of debate over plenty of centuries among biblical scholars about who Paul’s talking about when he’s like contrasting himself with super-apostles. And what we’re likely talking about here are people who are moving around the Roman Empire, the known world understanding and knowing that churches or congregations centered around the worship of Jesus are materializing all over the place. And, so, these churches are being visited and people are coming to churches that Paul has established with different teachings or convictions about Jesus and His work and what He represents and its nuanced in a way that’s different from Paul, whereas Paul has gone through an awful lot to plant the churches that he’s planted, a lot of hunger, a lot of thirst, a lot of sleepless nights, a lot of persecution, a lot of anxiety and stress. And then people are coming in behind him after all of the foundation has been laid and nuancing the gospel in a way that Paul doesn’t like. And these super apostles, well they could be people who were actual disciples of Jesus or people who were associated with actual disciples of Jesus, thus giving them this kind of super-apostle claim. This is a claim that Paul can make. He never met Jesus in his human ministry in his human life, but it seems as if some people by association with whoever is…whoever these super apostles are would gain credibility in the churches that they would go to. And since there are nuances in what was being taught you have an immediate contrast which leads you to a comparison between Paul and the super-apostles. And it should be noted that we’re reading the New Testament, but there was a time when this wasn’t the New Testament. And as we read the New Testament we’re reading about that time when there wasn’t a New Testament, right? So, people weren’t referring to Scripture and verse to try to validate what they believed or thought. A lot of nuanced teachings about Jesus were swirling around and very extreme. So on the one hand you might have Jewish believers that Paul sometimes calls Judaizers but basically, believers in Jesus, but believers that Jesus was a Jew, was the Jewish Messiah, had a Jewish message, lived in a Jewish context, that the whole thing was Hebrew and that Jesus didn’t start a new religion that was different than Judaism, that follow Jesus you needed to follow the customs of the Hebrew people believing that Jesus was the fulfillment of the Hebrew story, right? So, even if you thought Gentiles were welcome at the table they needed to move through a process of converting into the Jewish Hebrew faith and religion and then follow Jesus. Whereas Paul is like, that’s not the way it works. God is sending His Holy Spirit upon Gentiles who don’t have a clue about the Hebrew context. But like on the other extreme, like the far extreme of that were people who had a completely different view of Jesus as a being sent to reveal the true God, even as extreme as to say that the Hebrew God is an evil God and Jesus came to reveal the true God and the real mission in this life is to understand that this world is a cage, we’re trapped here and our goal is to escape it and that is done through systematically denying human experiences in favor of seeking spiritual experiences. And, so, a lot swirling around. So, Paul finds himself in a predicament where he has to self-validate and he calls this boasting. And boasting about yourself, like that’s rarely considered a good thing. But what…what choice does Paul have since he’s been forced because he’s being compared to not address it? Because Paul’s pretty concerned about people getting swept into teachings that he hasn’t given. So, Paul’s kind of in a squirmy sort of situation that he doesn’t want to be in because it’s like who can prove that they’re the most authentic disciple of Jesus Christ? Like that is a no win situation. And, so, Paul has to step in and basically say, I am not inferior to anybody you are comparing me with. If they’ve done things you’re going to see that I’ve done even more. And we may think like, well why don’t you just go ahead and continue doing the good works that you’re doing and let them speak for themselves? Like, why the insecurity? Like what’s going on here? But Paul basically said why. And I quote, “I’m as protective of you as God is. After all, you’re a virgin who I promised in marriage to one man, Christ.” And, so, as we continue this letter tomorrow we’ll get to hear all of Paul’s boasting but even at this point we have an opportunity to kind of look at our own lives and how we contrast things and how we compare things and how we contrast people and compare people and how we contrast ourselves and compare ourselves in the ways that we look for validation for ourselves, the ways that we boast without boasting, the way that we try to legitimize what we have to say in contrast to what somebody else has to say, or because of who we know, or whose name we can throw out there. What we need to remember is there’s only one validation that actually matters. There’s only one validation and it’s available to everybody and that’s the awareness that we are nothing without Christ Jesus. And if we are nothing without Jesus then everything that we are is because of Jesus. We actually have no claims in and of ourselves. And, so, feeding our ego by self-validation is really just that, feeding our ego. Paul’s quote of boasting is coming from a very different place. He is concerned for the people that he has risked his life to bring the gospel to and we’ll hear more about what he has to say tomorrow.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You. We thank You for the territory that we are in in the Scriptures right now. Thank You for the way that the Scriptures bring things up by letting us look back and see that so many of the things that are going on now were going on then. We are still struggling with much of the same kinds of things and that lets us know our desperate need of You and how often we are unwilling to surrender comparison or anything else that gives us a sense of control to You. We repent of that. We humble ourselves before You. Any value that we have has been bestowed upon us by You and it is considerable value that we can’t claim. You have given it to us. And, so, may we see ourselves through this lens and may we see our brothers and sisters all around the world through this same lens we ask in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hi Daily Audio Bible family. Phone calls make me nervous, so I hope you can understand me well enough. I called in a few years ago asking for prayer for our salvation for my husband. It hasn’t happened yet. Our lives are both a mess and my mental health has been worsening. I am going to therapy and have realized that if I had been a healthier whole person I never would have been in a relationship with my husband. I don’t know if I ever truly loved him or if I just pitied him and from the mindset of my past trauma whatever I thought God wanted me there to help him. Please pray for wisdom for me for decisions and logistics, whatever decisions end up being made. I’m torn between feeling like we need to split up for my own health like I’m being taken advantage of and manipulated and between feeling guilty because I don’t know what he can do if we do split up. He hasn’t worked since Covid and has so many health issues but drags his feet on going to a doctor. But sometimes I feel hope that he will be saved and that things would be good. I really need wisdom and clarity because I don’t you know which of my thoughts to trust. I need to be able to discern whether he is speaking honestly, and I need humility and growth like if we need to learn to communicate better or whether he is trying to gaslight me and I need to stand up for myself and stop enabling him. My parents always said my name means crowned with joy, so I think I’ll go by that. Thank you so much for your prayers. Love you guys. Bye.

Hi Daily Audio Bible family this is Renzo in Florida and I just want to pray for a few of the DABbers. Father God, I pray for Egbert. I just thank You for his faith, Lord God. Let him keep being on fire for You Lord God. Guide him and just keep being filled, let him keep getting into Your word always God and just thank You for everything. And Father God, I also pray for Noreen Lord God, I pray for her relationship with her mother and her brother. Lord God, I pray that there is healing and a relationship that will just draw them closer. And of course, that’s all directed by You Lord. So, sanctify everything God. Guide them in Jesus’ name. And Father God I just pray for…I think it’s Shayla. Father God I just pray that You just guide her and her husband in what they’re going through with his legal stuff God. Just heal her and just guide her as she goes through this, hard times, her and her husband and the hurt and sorrow. God just guide her, give her bees God in this time and let her just be filled with the Spirit and her husband. In Jesus’ name. Amen. And I just ask you guys to just pray that I just keep putting God first, I keep walking with him and keep spreading the gospel through the gifts that He’s given me. And I just pray that I just keep…just keep being consistent in my word and spending time with God. If you could pray for that. God bless you guys. Jesus loves you. So do I. Bye.

Hi family this is Biola from Maryland. It’s been a very tough year for me. My mother passed away suddenly a few months ago and then I had a car accident. I just want to thank God that He does care about us. First Peter 5:7 says that we should cast all our cares on Him because He cares. And He means all our cares. So, I thank God that, you know, He’s there, He’s been there for me and I give him praise because He always leaves an avenue of praise in whatever happens in our lives. I want to give a shout out to my brother Egbert out there in Belize. My brother I pray that God will protect all the concerns you in the name of Jesus. Brother, I pray that He will provide for all your needs. And sister from North Carolina I heard you. You said you’re lonely and your husband travels and you’re out there with the kids. This is just a season in your life sister, and I pray that the Lord will comfort you during this season in your life and He will bring divine connections your way in the name of Jesus. Have you thought about reaching out to a local church around you sister? I will be praying for you. Nadine from Dubai, I heard your prayer request, and I am praying that God may help you, your mom, and brother. He knows what your situation is and I pray that he will grant you your heart’s desires regarding the situation in the name of Jesus. Sister from sun from Saskatchewan this is a difficult situation, but I pray that God will fill your heart with peace and will have mercy upon your friend and give him favor before the judge in the name of Jesus. Kingdom Seeker Daniel I’m rejoicing with you and Lady of Victory, and I pray that God will cause your love to increase and about more and more in Jesus’ name. God bless you all family.

Hi family this is Anne in California. I was just calling to ask for prayer. I don’t even know where to begin but I am going through a really rough time. Having a hard time at work. When it used to be a great community of just everybody coming together loving one another being family has become us against you with young people and older people. And I don’t understand it. It never used to be that way. And even in my work itself I don’t feel content because I feel like they’re…they’re just keeping me because they have too. I don’t know. It’s so discouraging. And I used to be involved in so many things and I’ve just been put on the shelf. I don’t know anything. The hard thing about all of this is that I work at my church. I never thought it would become this way. And because it’s like this in church at work I’m feeling like this in my relationship with the Lord too. And I know that he doesn’t reflect how man feels about me but I’m struggling because He’s allowing it to happen. So, if it’s time for me to get a new job I will but that’s terrifying at 56 years of age. So, please just pray that I have clear direction of where I need to be. And I want to be content no matter what my circumstances are. So, I don’t want to fall into discontentment. So, yeah. Thank you.

Good morning, DABbers I’m calling in for Nate from Washington. He called up asking for prayer for sex addition. And Lord he wanted prayers for himself and his for his wife. So, Lord I pray against the addition that Nate has and pray that You would truly him know the pain that he’s caused his wife. I pray that Nate would repent and turn from his past and not just with a simple and sorry Lord but a true heart change that leads him to fall before You in humble repentance and that he would rebuke the Father of lies that coaxes him into believing that he can’t stop. Father Your word says that You haven’t given us a spirit of fear but of power, love, and a sound mind. So, I pray that he’d see an amazing change in his own heart and his own mind and that that would transfer to his wife and her heart and mind would change and she’d be able to truly forgive and trust him again. Lord, I pray that as Nate claims his mind back from the enemy we know that Satan is gonna totally would not want to give up the place that he’s had so far and the place that only God should have. So, give him strength. Lord, in the battle with the lies and the confusion I pray that You’d help Nate to declare out loud that he won’t allow any of Satan’s lies to infiltrate his mind or his Spirit. Your word says that at the name of Jesus demons have to flee. So, help Nate to truly understand the power that he has is only in the name of Jesus, the blood of Jesus, and the word of God. Won’t You Lord fill his heart and his mind with pure and holy thoughts Lord. Give him victory in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Amen.

Isaiah 1:1-2:22, 2 Corinthians 10:1-18, Psalm 52:1-9, Proverbs 22:26-27

Today is the eighth day of September, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian, like I’ve been every day for going on 17 years. Every day here, I’m Brian. It’s great to be here with you today, as we continue our journey forward day-by-day, step-by-step, immersing ourselves in the Scriptures and allowing them to speak into our lives and forming the choices, the thoughts, the actions, that we take. Great to be here with you today and gather around this Global Campfire for the next step forward.

Introduction to the Book of Isaiah:

And yesterday, we concluded, in the Old Testament, the book of Song of Songs. Which means that we’re moving into some new territory today, completely different kind of territory than the Song of Songs. Today, we will begin the book of Isaiah, which is a prophetic book in the Old Testament, classified among a grouping of books known as the Major Prophets, so that would be Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lamentations, Ezekiel and Daniel. And the distinction of major prophets doesn’t mean more important voice, it has more to do with the scope of the material. So, like Isaiah, we’re gonna move into Isaiah today, but we’re gonna camp out in Isaiah for a while because it’s one of the longer books in the Bible, 66 chapters. So, the scope of the material, creates the distinction, major prophets. So, when we get to the minor prophets, we’ll see that they’re much shorter in scope and content. Some of the minor prophets, when we get to them, lots of them we’ll read through in one day, they’re that short. The name Isaiah means the Lord saves and Isaiah was a passionate Old Testament prophet. Isaiah is quoted in the New Testament often. Jesus quotes from Isaiah many times in the Gospels. In fact, Isaiah is the backdrop for Jesus announcing his ministry, “the Spirit of the Lord is upon me, He has anointed me, to bring good news to the poor. He sent me to proclaim that captives will be free, the blind will receive their sight, the oppressed will be set free at the time of the Lord’s favor has come.” Jesus announces that He’s fulfilling that prophecy in their ears. So, Isaiah is important. And here’s the thing about Isaiah amongst scholars, we have the book of Isaiah but many, many, many biblical scholars believe that there’s more than one voice in the book of Isaiah. Some think it may be, it’s a couple of different voices because the first half of Isaiah is full of a lot of judgment, a lot of calling out of things. The second half of Isaiah gets much more hopeful, a lot of beautiful promises of restoration. And then there are scholars that see even a couple more voices and can kind of make those distinctions. The truth is we don’t know whether this was a singular text at one time, that was created overtime, and so, it has different complexions or whether it was kind of begun by Isaiah and then the prophetic schools that were in existence at the time, that this tradition carried forward. These kinds of things are debated and hotly debated among biblical scholars all of the time, it’s part of our tradition, it’s always been going on, as we attempt to excavate and dig deeper and deeper to arrive at a more complete picture of what it is we’re reading and how it becomes actionable in our own lives. Nevertheless, it is believed that Isaiah lived somewhere around the second half of the eighth century BC, it appears that he was not like a peasant or commoner, that he comes from power of some sort or maybe part of an upper-class. He had access to kings. He had access to royalty, that’s not normal for a common person. And even though he lived over, he lived through the reins of many different kings, he was able to prophesy to them, so he had access, that’s not something that just a farmer from some backwater somewhere could just walk into Jerusalem and do this. The prophecies in Isaiah will cover the reins of five different kings: Hussiah, Jothem, Ahaz, Hezekiah and Manasseh. And then, there are Jewish and current Christian traditions that would tell us Isaiah was martyred, and in particular was martyred by being sawed in half and that this came at the order of King Manasseh. That…that tradition isn’t in the Scriptures. There is a small reference in the book of Hebrews that talk about different martyrs, some died by stoning, some were sawed in half, others were killed with the sword. That would be maybe as close as we could come to this tradition. And as I was saying just a couple minutes ago, this book has divisions in it, changes of tone and if we can split it in half, the first 39 chapters are discussing judgment, God’s judgment, very sobering stuff. And then chapters 40 through the end, really bring about God’s comfort and restoration, very, very hopeful part of the book. But as we read this, we should note that Isaiah doesn’t just show up on the scene because God had a bad day yesterday and then woke up on the wrong side of the bed today and starts being angry with the human race and He’s gonna cast things down and create judgment upon the earth. He is going to do those things but it’s because of what He’s seeing which really makes justice a major theme inside the book of Isaiah. And it’s…it’s not just like justice, it’s calling out and labeling injustice, that is not gonna work. He’s not building a people who oppress the widow and the orphan, He’s not creating a people that will dominate over and enslave other people, He’s is not building the people who take advantage in any way that they can. And these things are being called to the surface. And we see this very, very clearly in Isaiah, that the heart of the text is for the downtrodden. So, let’s remember that, that is the backdrop here going on as we read through this because when read through and it’s a book of prophecy, there’s plenty a metaphor, there’s plenty of symbolism and there’s plenty of allegory, it’s easy to check out and just get lost and think this is a prophecy to…to and ancient people, it has nothing to do with me. Just because it was from a prophet and God said it and so it’s in the Bible but doesn’t really mean anything to me today. Justice still means something today, how we interpret and enforce it. In fact, I guess it could be said that it’s…it’s a raging battle now, just like it’s always been, it gets politicized now, like it has always been, it gets murky and cloudy, like it’s always been. And so, if we look deep here, we can see things that have always been going on that are not supposed to be going on. So, let’s begin, Isaiah chapter 1 verse 1, through 2 verse 22 today.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word and we love You, we worship You and we are grateful for such a gift, such a tangible gift, something that we can turn to, no matter how foggy, murky or dark life can seem, as a tangible gift in the Scriptures. And we thank You for what they speak into our souls and how they challenge everything about us and how they transform us, as we obey them and surrender ourselves to You in utter dependence. Father, as we move into this new territory, into the prophets, come, Holy Spirit, lead us into all truth, this is our constant prayer. This is what we seek and what we desire, that we would know and understand and grow further and further as we are transformed into Your likeness. So, may we collaborate and cooperate with You in every way and not resist You in any way, we ask in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Prayer and Encouragements:

Hello my name is Patrick from Calgary, Alberta, Canada. And I’m asking for prayer for my dad. His name is Bob, Bob Reef. He has been a pastor for 50+ years. He is 93 years old and he still preaches occasionally. But he’s doing pretty good for 93, he’s got pacemakers and a hearing aids. Still drives his own car, goes for walks on a daily basis and goes on the treadmill every morning. But he’s very lonely because my mother and his wife passed away from dementia last year and he’s just getting lonelier and lonelier. They’d been married, were married 62 years and he has a lot of regrets. He is still the only one from his generation, all the people he’s known, his cousins, parents, grandmas, grandpas, sisters, passed and he’s basically the only one left. And he’s just wondering what his purpose is. He spends most of the time in his home, doing nothing. He’s been a warrior for Christ and I just pray for my dad, that You’d give him a purpose. I just pray for that, I only need to pray for my dad. Again, his name is Bob and he’s just a real void to suddenly to find after 62 two years, he’s all alone. So, I love my dad very much and I just pray for miracle in his life right now. In Jesus name. Thank you.

Hello DAB family, this is Rachel in St. Louis. I called last week about my daughter Ella, suffering from anorexia. I just want to say passionately and humbly thank you so much for all the prayers. I’m a little behind. But I have heard your prayers from all over the world and here in the states and I am so touched and so humbled and so grateful because your prayers have been just wrapping my family in peace and comfort. My daughters had one week in the facility and she’s calm, and completing her meal plan. And I ask that you please just keep praying for her, cause she has a long road ahead. Help her continue to stay calm and understand the steps that she needs to take. And I also want to lift up Sarah the daughter of a mom who called in on behalf of Ella. I will walk with you and pray for Sarah. And I also want to pray for Hannah and John and Rachel in the UK because John has called for his daughter Hannah who also suffers from anorexia. And I’ve been praying alongside you and lifting up Hannah. These precious children, I rebuke this evil that comes against our children’s minds and how harmful it is and we are stronger and there are so many more with us then against us, we will defeat this evil together. Thank you, I love you. I’m humbled by your prayer, your prayers help given me faith and restore my hope and together we are going to move mountains and save our children. Dear Jesus save our precious children, we love you and we’re grateful. Thank you. Watch over Sarah and Hannah, Lord, thank you. Amen

Hey, this one goes out to Brian. This is Micah in Awe, in Kansas City, Missouri. I just wanted to say thank you for the message after today’s reading, September 5th reading and you we’re talking about looking at our lives and seeing who we’re living for, how we’re living. Yeah, I’m getting off track, like I’m focusing on money and things and my own joy and my own happiness and like not paying attention to other people anymore and other and the things of God. I listen to the word and I listen to sermons and every once in a while I listen to worship music. But I’m really getting off track. Today’s insight was great for me to hear. I need to start refocusing, reframing my life and get back focused on doing the work of God. and one thing that hit me is, whenever you’re talking about when we die. We can’t take anything with us, like was mentioned. But, so, I was thinking, whenever I go, I’m back to being in the humble mess that I was before God gave me all this stuff. Like I was a total mess before God change my life and He’s applied all these different things to me, He’s given me wisdom. I don’t know if I ever even asked for wisdom, but He’s given me so much just understanding of things, given me my monetary wealth and I stopped typing recently, just forget about it. And like, these things He’s given me, without Him, stripped away from me, I’m still this mess of a ridiculous person, that’s just irresponsible and just totally needy. Today, I remembered that without that, that’s how I’m gonna leave this earth, without that. I’m going back to the humble state, just me, not even clothing or whatever. Anyway, thank you Brian.

Good morning, Daily Audio Bible. My name is Jesus from beautiful South Florida, where I am today in this new month. I thank God for the devotional on September 5. It came across on the prayer request from a sister named Gina. I don’t know where she said she was from, I can’t mention it. I can’t pronounce it. I can pronounce the name of the Lord God. And she pray about her, her mate, her partner, doing time in prison. I want to talk and I want to pray for you for the life of your partner. I’m gonna ask God this morning to enhance your faith, to bring the Holy Spirit power over you, so that you may have understanding. You know we pray for the life of your partner, that he serves time for whatever he has done or whatever is going on in his life. But you have the power of God on your head. And the Holy Spirit will fill you with patience and that you would motivate him that he may find people to speak over them. That he may find ministry even there in jail. Just as Paul made it happen from prison walls, so can he. My sister, I ask that you support him, that you have faith and patience in the Lord. Trust in Christ in everything that you believe. That your hand, that your prayers would soothe and protect the life of your partner. And that he would come to peace and that everything would be said in his life. Whatever is meant to be, will be. And that you would have encouraging words for those who are in there with him. Sister Gina, may the Lord be with you. May the power that rose Christ from the grave, daily work within you.

Hey Daily Audio Bible family, this is John no longer from Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. We’ve relocate and are currently up in York Beach, Maine. In the process of moving to Massachusetts but that is a story for another day. More importantly family, I’d really love for you to join me in prayer right now. We were just on our way into Portsmouth, New Hampshire, it’s kind of rainy here today. We decided to stop a do a little bit of shopping for my daughter Leah, who’s started up college, her first year as a freshman. And I bumped into a couple at a shoe store and they have learned that a fire just destroyed there home back in Medford, Massachusetts. Would you please join me in praying for Ben and for Nicole. A couple people that I just met in line at the shoe store I was at. Father God, thank You for the Daily Audio Bible family and thank you for the power of prayer, Father God. Thank You that you are a God that heals and a God that restores, Jesus. I ask Father, that You show yourself in a magnificent way, in a way that only you can, to bring comfort and wholeness to Nicole and to Ben and to their family. And Father, thank You in advance for putting around them and placing them in the hands of people that are gonna be resourceful to them, that are gonna contribute to their lives in a meaningful way. Lord Jesus, use this as an opportunity Father, to surround them with Christian people who can show them Your love and Your light God, to bring them closer to you, so that You can be a testimony for them one day Jesus down the road, I believe that with all my heart and I know that You’re able, more able Father God than any one, and anything. We love You Jesus, in your precious name I pray. Amen. Thank you so much family. Thanks for praying for Ben and Nicole.

Song 5:1-8:14, 2 Corinthians 9:1-15, Psalms 51:1-19, Proverbs 22:24-25

Today is the 7th day of September welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I’m Brian it’s great to be here with you today like it is every day always taking the next step forward together. And our next step for leads us to part two of what we started yesterday, which is the song of Solomon, the song of songs. We will conclude the song of songs today. And it’s our tradition around here and has been for…my goodness…how long…a long, long time that when we get to the song of Solomon my wife Jill joins me and we read through it all together. So, we began that yesterday, and we will conclude today with song of songs chapter 5 through 8.

Commentary:

Okay. So, even as we conclude the song of Solomon and continue our journey through second Corinthians it’s the psalm today, a psalm of repentance. And understanding the back story of this Psalm of repentance is poignant and leads us to consider our own repentance. And, so, as the story goes, because we’ve already moved through the story when we read to the books of Samuel, second Samuel, in particular once David has become the king. Remember first Samuel sort of deals with King Saul. David is in the mix, but he spends a lot of his time trying to stay alive because Saul is trying to kill him. By the time we get to second Samuel, David, becomes the king of all Israel. And the troops are off in battle. David has remained in Jerusalem. He wakes up from a nap. He is out on his front porch overlooking the city, and he looks down and sees a very beautiful woman bathing and he wants her. And, so, he takes her. He is the king. Her name is Bathsheba and David gets her pregnant and she happens to be married and not just married anybody, married to one of the most loyal and capable servants that David has. Bathsheba’s husband’s name was Uriah, Uriah the Hittite. And David does all kinds of things to cover this up, what he has done and this pregnancy. He brings Uriah back from the battles and tries to send him home to his wife where he can take comfort. And if that can happen then this whole thing can probably be covered up. Only David and Bathsheba will know. It’s just that Uriah is a righteous person, a loyal person to death. And, so, in the end try to cover this up David sends Uriah back to the front lines with a note to the general to put him where the fiercest fighting is so that he might die. And he does and Uriah is killed in battle. That is a dark sordid story, a really dark story for a person who is known to be the friend of God, a man after God’s own hearts. But he certainly wasn’t in that posture when he did what he did. And eventually Nathan the prophet comes and confronts David with the story about a little sheep that was part of the poor man’s family, when a rich man came and took that sheep and fed it to unexpected guests. David, here’s the story and is furious about it, about the injustice of it until Nathan spins it around and says, you are that person. And it hits David full square in the mouth, the full weight and scope of what he has done. And David pens this psalm. It cries out, “purify me from sin with hyssop and I will be clean. Wash me and I will be whiter than snow. Let me hear sounds of joy and gladness, let the bones that you of broken dance. Hide your face from my sins and wipe out all that I have done wrong. Create a clean heart in me oh, God, and renew a faithful spirit within me. Do not force me away from your presence and do not take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore the joy of your salvation to me and provide me with a spirit of willing obedience.” Understanding the back story, the inspiration for this song makes it so poignant. And truth be told, there’s probably none of us that have reached these kinds of depths. Very likely none of us have that level of power. David was the king. That’s how he was able to perpetrate what he did, but he did have the power and he used the power for evil. And when he realized it, he realized he had been trying to cover up his sin by sinning even more, He tried to cover up one evil with a greater evil and cover up that evil with a greater evil and it just kept getting worse and now he’s confronted with what he’s done and there is no way to cover it up. The only possible way is to fall in surrender and repentance and beg God to create a clean heart out of the dark blackness that he had created. And, so, this is a beautiful and poignant psalm of repentance that we should be familiar with. And like I said, we probably haven’t reached these depths where we can have the power to do the kinds of things that David did and then even commit basically murder by proxy, murder by battle, putting Uriah in a position where he would surely be killed. We probably don’t have that kind of power. But we have power to create darkness, blackness. We have the power to do what we know is wrong and then take one evil and try to cover it up with a greater evil, only realizing that we are compounding things and creating a cage that we can’t escape. Repentance is the only way forward. Repentance is all throughout the Bible. Repentance gets pounded a lot, maybe even to the point that it becomes noneffective when we hear about it or even cliché, but it is a constant and necessary part of the faith journey. Repenting means to change your mind. Like that is literally what it means, to change your mind and go in a different direction. And, so, when we begin to realize that we’re compounding things we can immediately realize we’re not going in the right direction. Repentance is required. We have to change our mind and go in a different direction. If we don’t become familiar with repentance, then we keep compounding the problems and we will eventually destroy ourselves. And, so, let’s take this opportunity as we move through Psalm 51 to look inside and invite the Holy Spirit. And if we remember this was David’s plea, take not your Holy Spirit from me. And, so, let’s invite this same Holy Spirit within us to reveal to us the things that need to change, the ways in which we need to repent. Psalm 51 shows us a lot of things, including the posture of heart that within David, but it also reveals to us that there’s nothing too horrible that we can’t repent from. There isn’t a dark blackness that cannot receive the light of truth. There’s nothing that can’t be restored if we’re willing to change, if we’re willing to repent. And as we know from reading through second Samuel, David eventually married Bathsheba. The baby that she was carrying, they lost the baby. Later, they had another child. His name was Solomon, and he would grow up to become the king of Israel. God will redeem anything that He touches. Let’s not keep things off limits from his touch. Those things are leading us in a way that we do not want to go.

Prayer:

Holy Spirit, we invite You into that because even as we’re talking about it, as happens so often, little things that are going on in our lives come to mind. And there are a myriad of things going on all over the world and all of our different stories and lives in cultures, but we all know it all bubbles forth, and we can begin to see the ways that we need to change. In fact, not just need to change must change, which is by definition repentance. And, so, we begin that process with this prayer. We repent. We humble ourselves. We are crushed by what we see in the side it is leading us astray further away from You and further into the darkness. We have to turn around. We have to go in a different direction. And we start that with the first step right now. We repent. And we invite You Holy Spirit to continue to shine the light of truth into the dark recesses of our hearts surfacing things that need to go away, things that we need to turn away from. Come Holy Spirit into this. May this be the first day of a new beginning where we walk away from what is torturing us and encaging us and imprisoning us. We pray this in the powerful name of Jesus. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hey People on the Water it’s Shayna from Saskatchewan. I just heard your dad call in saying he just dropped you off at college and I thought that was pretty awesome because we hear from you, but I don’t think we’ve ever heard from your dad. Anyways, I work at a university, so I know what is like. I see every day what new students go through, and we just started up too, so. So, Heavenly Father, I want to lift up to You people on the water. Lord, will You give him peace while he starts this new chapter in his life. Will You be with him, will You guide him and will You stay at the present with him? He’s such a warrior for You, God and I just…I…I don’t ever wanna see that falter. I don’t ever want to hear that he’s too busy for You or too busy to do Your work. So, Lord, I just ask You to bless his school year. And please provide him any provisions that he needs while he is there. In Jesus’ name. Amen. You’re gonna do awesome. Shayna from Saskatchewan.

Good morning, Daily Audio Bible family this is Christine from the NC US calling to lift up a fellow DABber in prayer. I apologize. I’m not 100% sure of your name. I heard your prayer request a few days ago and it hasn’t left me yet and I meant to call in then, but I haven’t. I think your name was Jalen, but I’m not sure. But you said that your psychologist or psychiatrist was retiring and that you were devastated, that you didn’t know how you were going to do life without this person. I just want to lift you up in prayer. Lord, I just pray for this fellow believer. I pray for healing in her heart, mind, and soul God, that she would come to know You and walk with You more closely than ever before. I pray that You would become her hope, that You would become her everything, that You would be the one that she leans on. God, I know that we need help along the way, but You are our only true hope and our only true strength and everything we have comes from You. Sister, I pray for you. I pray that you. I pray that you would allow God to heal you in the areas to where you’re insecure, that you’re afraid, that you feel like you can’t do these things, that you can’t do life. I pray for spiritual eyes and ears to hear and see the work of God in your life, that you would know the strength He has given you to carry on. I pray that you would find fellow believers as friends that would either be more mentors to you or be in the same boat that you are, that you could encourage each other. I pray that God will bring other people in faith…

Hey, DAB family, this is Alexa calling from just outside London, UK. And I just want to start by saying thank you to everyone for all your prayers, because honestly, it is a miracle of God that has happened, that my grandma who was in multiple organ failure and we were told that she only had a couple days left, it is a miracle of God that she is still living. She is still breathing. My mum was able to fly out to Uganda to see her, to be with her and that’s such a blessing to her, you know. I prayed. You guys prayed and we prayed that God would give peace in this situation and that if it wasn’t the Lord’s will for my mom to make it out there on time, that He would give her a piece and as my grandma transitions into glory. But God is good and He’s enabled her to go out there and say her goodbyes, which was really important for her. And, so, I just want to thank God for that. I also want to give praise and thanks because she travelled on some really dangerous roads and it’s rainy season out there and the journey was about 12 hours and there was so much favor. She was given a car for free. Someone else __ the car for her. She was given a driver and she made it up. And even though they arrived at 3am in the morning she made it up and into the village and to the hospital __ and had my grandmother waiting for her. So, I just want to say thank you. I want to give glory to God for what seemed impossible. And I’m grateful. I love you guys.

[singing starts] In the morning when I rise. In the morning when I arise. In the morning when I rise give me Jesus. Give me Jesus. Give me Jesus. You can have all this world. Give me Jesus. When I am alone. Oh, when I am alone. Oh when, I am alone give me Jesus. Give me Jesus. Give me Jesus. You can have all this world just give me Jesus. And when I come to die. Oh, when I come to die. Oh, when I come to die give me Jesus [singing stops].

Hey Daily Audio Bible family, this is Travis from Alberta, Canada. This is for Shayna from Saskatchewan. You were on the podcast today asking for prayer for the guy that’s come into your life, he has to do…to do some time. And you know, I just wanted to get on here and pray for you. I also have a friend that is getting sent in this week. He’s looking at some time. And though I’ve had friends who have gone into…have gone into prison and God has completely changed their lives. And, so, I hope like this is something that God uses just to bring you all closer to Him. So, I’m just going to pray and just know that somebody is out there thinking of you both and praying for you. Heavenly Father I praise You and I love You and I thank You for Shayna. And God, I ask that You would just watch over her and her guy, Lord, that You would be with them as he does his time, God, that You would just meet him in those walls, that You would meet him there, God, and You would draw him closer and closer to You, and that You would also draw Shayna closer and closer to You oh God, that Lord this would be a time of getting closer with You and not running from You. Lord, watch over them. Take care of them. Draw them nearer. Protect them. I pray this all in Jesus’ name. Amen. God bless you.
