Leviticus 22:17-23:44

Animals Accepted for Sacrifice

17 Yahweh spoke to Moses, 18 “Tell Aaron, his sons, and all the Israelites: Israelites or foreigners may bring burnt offerings to Yahweh for anything they vowed or as freewill offerings. 19 The offering must be a male that has no defects from your cattle, sheep, or goats in order to be accepted. 20 Never bring any animal with a physical defect, because it will not be accepted on your behalf. 21 A person may bring Yahweh a fellowship offering to fulfill a vow or for a freewill offering. Whether it is from the cattle, sheep, or goats, it must be an animal that has no defects in order to be accepted. It must never be an animal that has defects. 22 Never bring Yahweh an animal that is blind, has broken bones, cuts, warts, scabs, or ringworm. Never give Yahweh any of these in a sacrifice by fire on the altar. 23 You may use a bull or a sheep with a deformity or one that is stunted in growth as a freewill offering. However, it will not be accepted for a vow. 24 Never bring Yahweh an animal that has bruised, crushed, torn out, or cut out testicles. Never do any of these things to an animal in your land. 25 Never bring any kind of castrated animal received from a foreigner as a food offering for your Elohim. A castrated animal will not be accepted on your behalf because castration is a physical defect.”

26 Yahweh spoke to Moses, 27 “When a calf, a lamb, or a goat is born, it must stay with its mother for seven days. From the eighth day on it may be accepted as a sacrifice by fire to Yahweh. 28 Never slaughter a cow or a sheep and its young the same day.

29 “When you sacrifice a thank offering to Yahweh, do it in the proper way. 30 Eat it the same day. Never leave any of it until morning. I am Yahweh.

31 “Carefully obey my commands. I am Yahweh. 32 Never dishonor my holy name. I will show my holiness among the Israelites. I am Yahweh, who sets you apart as holy. 33 I brought you out of Egypt to be your Elohim. I am Yahweh.”

The Day of Worship

23 Yahweh spoke to Moses, “Tell the Israelites: These are the appointed festivals with Yahweh, which you must announce as holy assemblies. You may work for six days. But the seventh day is a day of worship, a day when you don’t work, a holy assembly. Don’t do any work. It is Yahweh’s day of worship wherever you live.

“The following are Yahweh’s appointed festivals with holy assemblies, which you must announce at their appointed times.

The Spring Festivals

“The fourteenth day of the first month, in the evening, is Yahweh’s Passover. The fifteenth day of this same month is Yahweh’s Festival of Unleavened Bread. For seven days you must eat unleavened bread. On the first day there will be a holy assembly. Don’t do any regular work. Bring Yahweh a sacrifice by fire for seven days. On the seventh day there will be a holy assembly. Don’t do any regular work.”

Yahweh spoke to Moses, 10 “Tell the Israelites: When you come to the land I am going to give you and you harvest grain, bring the priest a bundle of the first grain you harvest. 11 He will present it to Yahweh so that you will be accepted. He will present it on the day after Passover. 12 On the day you present the bundle, you must sacrifice a one-year-old male lamb that has no defects as a burnt offering to Yahweh. 13 Bring a grain offering of four quarts of flour mixed with olive oil with it. This will be a sacrifice by fire made to Yahweh, a soothing aroma. Use one quart of wine for the wine offering. 14 Don’t eat bread, roasted grain, or fresh grain until this same day, when you bring the offering to your Elohim. It is a permanent law for generations to come wherever you live.

15 “Count seven full weeks from the day after Passover (the day you bring the bundle of grain as an offering presented to the Lord) 16 until the day after the seventh week. This is a total of fifty days. Then bring a new grain offering to Yahweh. 17 Bring two loaves of bread from your homes to present to the Lord. Bake them with four quarts of flour. They are the first harvested grain for Yahweh. 18 With the bread bring seven one-year-old lambs that have no defects, one bull, and two rams. They will be a burnt offering to Yahweh. With these offerings also bring grain and wine offerings. They will be a sacrifice by fire, a soothing aroma to Yahweh. 19 Also sacrifice one male goat as an offering for sin and two one-year-old lambs as a fellowship offering. 20 The priest must present them along with the bread of the first harvested grain as an offering to Yahweh. All this, along with the two lambs, will be holy and will belong to Yahweh’s priests. 21 Make an announcement that there will be a holy assembly on that same day. Don’t do any regular work. It is a permanent law for generations to come wherever you live.

22 “When you harvest the grain in your land, don’t harvest the grain in the corners of your fields or gather what is left after you’re finished. Leave it for poor people and foreigners. I am Yahweh your Elohim.”

The Fall Festivals

23 Yahweh spoke to Moses, 24 “Tell the Israelites: On the first day of the seventh month hold a worship festival. It will be a memorial day, a holy assembly announced by the blowing of rams’ horns. 25 Don’t do any regular work. Bring a sacrifice by fire to Yahweh.”

26 Yahweh spoke to Moses, 27 “In addition, the tenth day of this seventh month is a special day for the payment for sins. There will be a holy assembly. Humble yourselves, and bring Yahweh a sacrifice by fire. 28 Don’t do any work that day. It is a special day for the payment for sins. It is a time when you make peace with Yahweh your Elohim. 29 Those who do not humble themselves on that day will be excluded from the people. 30 I will kill those who do any work on that day. 31 Don’t do any work. It is a permanent law for generations to come wherever you live. 32 It is a day of worship, a day when you don’t work. Humble yourselves starting on the evening of the ninth day of the month. From that evening to the next, observe the day of worship.”

33 Yahweh spoke to Moses, 34 “Tell the Israelites: The fifteenth day of this seventh month is the Festival of Booths to Yahweh. It will last seven days. 35 On the first day there will be a holy assembly. Don’t do any regular work. 36 For seven consecutive days bring a sacrifice by fire to Yahweh. On the eighth day there will be a holy assembly. Bring Yahweh a sacrifice by fire. This is the last festival of the year. Don’t do any regular work.

37 “These are Yahweh’s appointed festivals. Announce them as holy assemblies for bringing sacrifices by fire to Yahweh. Bring burnt offerings, grain offerings, other sacrifices, and wine offerings—each one on its special day. 38 This is in addition to Yahweh’s days of worship, your gifts, all your vows, and your freewill offerings to Yahweh.

39 “However, on the fifteenth day of the seventh month, when you have gathered what the land produces, celebrate Yahweh’s festival for seven days. The first and the eighth days will be worship festivals. 40 On the first day take the best fruits, palm branches, the branches of leafy trees and poplars, and celebrate in the presence of Yahweh your Elohim for seven days. 41 It is Yahweh’s festival. Celebrate it for seven days each year. This is a permanent law for generations to come. Celebrate this festival in the seventh month. 42 Live in booths for seven days. Everyone born in Israel must live in booths 43 so that generations to come may learn how I made the people of Israel live in booths when I brought them out of Egypt. I am Yahweh your Elohim.”

44 So Moses told the Israelites about Yahweh’s appointed festivals.

Mark 9:30-10:12

Jesus Again Foretells That He Will Die and Come Back to Life(A)

30 They left that place and were passing through Galilee. Yeshua did not want anyone to know where he was 31 because he was teaching his disciples. He taught them, “The Son of Man will be betrayed and handed over to people. They will kill him, but on the third day he will come back to life.”

32 The disciples didn’t understand what he meant and were afraid to ask him.

Greatness in the Kingdom(B)

33 Then they came to Capernaum. While Yeshua was at home, he asked the disciples, “What were you arguing about on the road?” 34 They were silent. On the road they had argued about who was the greatest.

35 He sat down and called the twelve apostles. He told them, “Whoever wants to be the most important person must take the last place and be a servant to everyone else.” 36 Then he took a little child and had him stand among them. He put his arms around the child and said to them, 37 “Whoever welcomes a child like this in my name welcomes me. Whoever welcomes me welcomes not me but the one who sent me.”

Using the Name of Jesus(C)

38 John said to Yeshua, “Teacher, we saw someone forcing demons out of a person by using the power and authority of your name. We tried to stop him because he was not one of us.”

39 Yeshua said, “Don’t stop him! No one who works a miracle in my name can turn around and speak evil of me. 40 Whoever isn’t against us is for us. 41 I can guarantee this truth: Whoever gives you a cup of water to drink because you belong to Christ will certainly not lose his reward.”

Causing Others to Lose Faith(D)

42 “These little ones believe in me. It would be best for the person who causes one of them to lose faith to be thrown into the sea with a large stone hung around his neck.

43 “So if your hand causes you to lose your faith, cut it off! It is better for you to enter life disabled than to have two hands and go to hell, to the fire that cannot be put out.[a] 45 If your foot causes you to lose your faith, cut it off! It is better for you to enter life lame than to have two feet and be thrown into hell. 47 If your eye causes you to lose your faith, tear it out! It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into hell. 48 In hell worms that eat the body never die, and the fire is never put out. 49 Everyone will be salted with fire. 50 Salt is good. But if salt loses its taste, how will you restore its flavor? Have salt within you, and live in peace with one another.”

A Discussion about Divorce(E)

10 Yeshua left there and went into the territory of Judea along the other side of the Jordan River. Crowds gathered around him again, and he taught them as he usually did.

Some Pharisees came to test him. They asked, “Can a husband divorce his wife?”

Yeshua answered them, “What command did Moses give you?”

They said, “Moses allowed a man to give his wife a written notice to divorce her.”

Yeshua said to them, “He wrote this command for you because you’re heartless. But God made them male and female in the beginning, at creation. That’s why a man will leave his father and mother and will remain united with his wife, and the two will be one. So they are no longer two but one. Therefore, don’t let anyone separate what God has joined together.”

10 When they were in a house, the disciples asked him about this. 11 He answered them, “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another woman is committing adultery. 12 If a wife divorces her husband and marries another man, she is committing adultery.”

  1. Mark 9:43 Some manuscripts and translations add verses 44 and 46, which both say: “In hell worms that eat the body never die, and the fire is never put out.”

Psalm 44:1-8

Psalm 44

For the choir director; a maskil by Korah’s descendants.

O Elohim,
we have heard it with our own ears.
Our ancestors have told us
about the miracle you performed in their day,
in days long ago.
By your power you forced nations out of the land,
but you planted our ancestors there.
You shattered many groups of people,
but you set our ancestors free.[a]
It was not with their swords that they took possession of the land.
They did not gain victory with their own strength.
It was your right hand, your arm,
and the light of your presence that did it,
because you were pleased with them.

You alone are my Melek, O Elohim.
You won those victories for Jacob.
With you we can walk over our enemies.
With your name we can trample those who attack us.
I do not rely on my bow,
and my sword will never save me.
But you saved us from our enemies.
You put to shame those who hate us.
All day long we praise our Elohim.
We give thanks to you forever. Selah

Leviticus 20:22-22:16 ~ Mark 9:1-29 ~ Psalm 43:1-5 ~ Proverbs 10:18

Today is the 27th day of February.  Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible.  I’m Brian.  It’s great to be here with you next to this flowing stream that reminds us that we have stepped away, we have stepped out of the chaos and have come to a place of serenity where we can focus, where we can be together and allow God’s word to wash over us, washing away all of the things that have been going on and reorienting our hearts to God.  So we will zoom back out into the wilderness with the children of Israel, reading from the Names of God Bible this week, Leviticus chapter 20, verse 22 through 22, verse 16.

Commentary

So in the book of Leviticus we’re being given the law and it is touching every part of life.  All of the ethical choices that this culture that God is forming that need to be made, they are being put down.  And yeah, we’ve been camped out in the wilderness a long time with these guys, but let’s remember how we got here.  You remember that guy a long time ago, like a month ago?  Abraham?  Remember him? It all started there.  And then his son Isaac and then Isaac’s sons Jacob and Esau and the stealing of the birthright and the stealing of the blessing and Jacob on the run.  And God becoming his God.  And his trickery following him up to his uncle Laban and him marrying the wrong girl and then getting the right one.  All of that story, all is a thread of a promise of a people yet to come.

And then Jacob has 12 sons and gets a name change to Israel and those 12 sons are the children of Israel.  Then we go by way of Joseph into Egypt where these people flourish for centuries but are enslaved.  And then we follow them dramatically out of Egypt.  Their emancipation was epic.

So now we’re out in the wilderness where God has uninterrupted time with these people, no distractions of any sort.  They have got to depend on him for their very sustenance and he is giving them a new identity.  So yeah, we can read through these laws and go, ‘Oh my gosh, these are some really rigid things,’ but then in the gospels we’re always watching Jesus much later reinterpreting, revealing what this was always supposed to look like, what these chosen people were supposed to be like – holy, set apart because God, their Elohim is holy.

And it’s no different for us.  We can go, ‘Well, Jesus has given us a lot of freedoms and we don’t have to do all that stuff.’  And Paul unpacks that stuff when we get to the letters of Paul later this year. We’ll see all that, but the fundamental truth remains.  There are things that are clean for us and there are things that are unclean for us. There are things that are pure and there are things that are impure.  There are things that are true and there are things that are false.

So often what we find ourselves trying to do is massage our theological position so we can do whatever we want, but the bottom line is we’ve been given a conscience and we’ve been given the Holy Spirit.  There are some things we can do that are neither good nor bad and there are some things that are bad that we should not do because they will make us unclean.  They will make us impure and we know it.  So it doesn’t take rocket science to figure this out.  But the children of Israel out in the desert, they don’t know how to be anything but slaves.  This is revolutionary thought to them.

These parameters, they can look like a fence.  They can look like a cage or we can just understand this is the box where life is.  There is the narrow path that leads to life.  This is how this works.  And the spirit of the law then becomes apparent.  It is less about trying to observe specific rituals at specific times and more understanding the idea that there are things we shouldn’t do because they are not profitable in any way and they do not set us apart as holy.  And we are the holy ones upon the earth.  That is what we are supposed to be.

So what if you get up every day and start acknowledging that?  “I am a holy one upon this earth and darkness does not have any power or right or authority in my life unless I give it over. I am a holy one upon this earth and I serve Yahweh, my Elohim.”  Can you feel the identity in that?  The power in that?  That is who we are.

So yes, may we go through these laws because they are important.  They are very important to the story of the formation of a culture set apart and holy to God.  No doubt about it.  And although we are not observing the Mosaic Law, there is still pure and impure.  So we must ask ourselves, “If I am a holy one upon this earth, is this clean?  Am I true? Is this pure?”  Because at every turn we have that choice.

Prayer

Holy Spirit, we invite you into those choices because we’re making them constantly.  We’re making them without even thinking about them.  It’s just a part of our everyday life.  It’s not just about the big things.  It’s about the little ones.  So we invite your Holy Spirit to come into this, and as we move through this day, continue to remind us that we are the holy ones upon this earth and we are actively participating in the redemption of this place by your power and by your authority.  So are we able to even do that for ourselves?  And, of course, the answer is no, we are not able unless we are in collaboration with you utterly.  So come Holy Spirit.  We pray that we will be intertwined and inseparable from you and your ways this very day.  In Jesus’ name we ask and by his mighty power and authority we pray.  Amen.

Community Prayer Requests and Praise Reports

Hey DAB family.  This is Rachel from Houston and I know I haven’t called in a while.  I really appreciate all of your prayers through my dad’s passing last July and lifting up my sister and everything.  I just appreciate you guys so much and I love and listen to you every day and I’m praying for all of you.  Today I’m calling because one of my team members, I work in a hospital and she also works at night at a restaurant and she and her son were there together and she was robbed at gunpoint last night and her son jumped in front of the bullet.  So her 18-year-old son took the bullet for her and I just want to lift her up in prayer. I just need you guys to cover her. It is hard enough to lose a child, but to lose one that took the bullet for you has to be unbearable.  I love you guys and I know you guys will cover her with prayer and cover me in prayer.  I will talk to you again soon.  Bye.

Hi.  My name is Derrick.  It’s my first time calling in.  I’ve listened on and off for two or three years.  I went through a really hard time recently leaving a house church that my wife and I were a part of for about 17 years.  It’s been over a year since we left.  My wife feels good about it and saw lots of problems with it along the way. I was a leader or an elder in the church, a small house church, and I’m still struggling with what happened and how difficult it was to leave and a lot of the things that were said and done while we were on the way out.  I’m confused and I’m really struggling personally with personal sin that was an issue before I was a Christian, sexual sin with myself that I really struggle with. And it wasn’t an issue until we left. I’m really experiencing a lot of confusion, whether or not what I did was right and I just need prayer to overcome this sin and I need prayer just for peace because it has been very difficult and confusing.  It’s been a year but there was a lot of time invested.

Hi everybody.  This is Elaine from Victoria.  I’m calling for Michael struggling with an alcoholic wife and Janine that was brought up in an alcoholic home.  I experienced alcohol with my husband and I had to separate myself for safety reasons, so I can really relate to Michael and Janine and I want to give this to you from Isaiah 41 and it is from the In Living Bible.  I want to encourage you both.  But now the Lord who created you says don’t be afraid (excuse me, I’m so upset about your struggle).  Don’t be afraid for I have ransomed you.  I have called you by name (and that’s Michael and Janine).  You are mine.  The Lord says you’re mine.  When you go through deep waters and great trouble, I will be with you.  When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown.  When you walk through the fire of oppression, you will not be burned up.  The flames will not consume you for I am the Lord your God.  Your Savior. The Holy One of Israel.  So go with this, brother and sister.  God is with you through fire.  He’s been with me and delivered me out of it and he’ll deliver you too as well.  I just want (I hope I have time), just pray for my mom.  She needs a helper.  She’s almost blind.  She needs a helper to get from her room down to Sunday services.  I love you all.  Take care because God is with you.  Amen. Bye-bye for now.

Good morning Daily Audio Bible.  This is Tamberly and I’m calling for Janine.  Hi Janine.  I sure hope you’re doing okay.  Oh girl, you are on my heart.  There are so many of us that have lived or have very close family that have lived through the things that you have gone through.  I am so sorry that you were held captive by abuse.  My mother was too, held captive by abuse.  After her father died in prison, well, it was a lot… Anyway, the road was long, but I just want to give you some hope.  I am a survivor of abuse myself, but my mother is really the survivor and my hero. She decided to change, to just kind of… I don’t know how to explain this. I’m trying my best.  I’m just tripping over my words.  Lord, give me the words.  Please give me the words.  My mother survived terrible, terrible, terrible abuse.  It sounds a lot similar to what you survived.  I want to let you know that she has turned into such a powerful woman of God.  We have united together to make the next generation so much more healthy and purposely so.  And we have turned that abuse around and we are now using that experience or the wisdom that God has given us through that experience to help others, to minister to others in a mighty way.  So I just want to encourage you.  You know, of course, right now may be not the time.  I know you’re healing and you’re so broken.  And I pray with all my heart that God restores what the locusts have eaten. Father God, mend her mind and her heart and her soul.  Father, put your mighty hand on her and let her know how much you love her.  O God.

Yes, this is Mardi Q.  This is my second time I’ve called.  I’ve been listening to the Daily Audio Bible for about eight years.  I am a Christian artist.  I paint in the urban neighborhood of Washington, D.C., Bible schools, the local churches, and my models are mostly my students and staff of an afterschool art program that I run with some friends.  One of my models that was posing for Jesus in a series of paintings that I’m doing in the next three months has disappeared.  The urban neighborhood is very dangerous.  His name is Kevin H.  He disappeared yesterday at 4 p.m.  I’ve spoken to his wife.  She said he’s never been gone overnight.  He’s been home 10 years from a 12-year prison incarceration and I just ask you to pray that he’s alive, that he can get home, and if something terrible has happened to him, to pray for his wife Dana and his children who already have gone through the 12-year separation when he was in prison for a crime that he did not commit. Anyway, God bless and thank you for your prayers.  Bye-bye.

Hi beautiful family.  This is Pastor Gene from Bradenton, FL.  If you would please join me in prayer.  Father, we love you.  We come together as a family believing that you are and that you reward those who trust you.  Thank you for Jesus Christ who allows us to be able to come to your throne boldly and believe you for a miracle and that gives us direct access, Father, to you. Father, I just want to pray for my brother Reggie, formerly from Iraq, now in Nairobi.  Father, I am asking, I am calling upon your name to provide a job for my brother.  I pray, Father, that any doors that Satan has closed will be opened, Father, finally and quickly on behalf of my brother so that he can provide for himself and his family, Father.  Give him supernatural faith and help him to stand because you are going to do a miracle. Father, I thank you for my brother Drew. I pray that you will lift him up. You know his trials.  You know his situations and struggles, but you are his God. You will never leave him or forsake him. Help my brother, Father.  Thank you for my sister Amanda.  Father, thank you that she is still standing in spite of the betrayal of her husband and being separated from him for so many months. I pray that you will bless my sister, that you will bless her children.  Father, that you will restore her marriage if there is repentance in her husband.  May you cause repentance to happen.  And if not, I pray that you will give my sister the resolution to start all over again. O Jesus, Father, bless this family. Bless my brothers and sisters. Those that are struggling with their faith, lift them up, Father.  I lift their arms.  I strengthen their knees in the mighty name of Jesus.  Amen.  I love you family.  This is Pastor Gene.  Bye.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Monday February 27, 2017 (NIV)

Leviticus 20:22-22:16

22 “If you carefully obey all my laws and my rules, the land I am bringing you to live in will not vomit you out. 23 Never follow the practices of the people I am forcing out of your way. I cannot stand them because they did all these things. 24 I have told you that you will take their land. I will give it to you as your own. It is a land flowing with milk and honey. I am Yahweh your Elohim who separated you from other people. 25 Separate clean and unclean[a] animals and birds. Never become disgusting by eating any animal or bird or anything that crawls on the ground. I have separated you from every unclean thing. 26 Be my holy people because I, Yahweh, am holy. I have separated you from other people to be my very own.

27 “Every man or woman who is a medium or a psychic must be put to death. They must be stoned to death because they deserve to die.”

Holiness for All the Priests

21 Yahweh spoke to Moses, “Tell the priests, Aaron’s sons: None of you should become unclean by touching one of your relatives who has died. However, you are allowed to become unclean when one of your nearest relatives dies. These relatives include your mother, father, son, daughter, or brother, and especially an unmarried virgin sister who is still close to you. As the head of your people, you should never become unclean. That would make you unholy.

“You should never mourn by shaving bald spots on your heads, shaving the edges of your beards, or slashing your bodies.

“Be Elohim’s holy men, and don’t dishonor the name of your Elohim. Be holy because you bring sacrifices by fire to Yahweh. It is the food of your Elohim. You should never marry prostitutes, those who have lost their virginity, or divorced women because a priest is Elohim’s holy man. Be holy because you offer the food of your Elohim. Be holy because I, Yahweh, am holy. I set you apart as holy. When a priest’s daughter dishonors herself by becoming a prostitute, she dishonors her father. She must be burned.

Holiness for the Chief Priest

10 “The priest who is anointed with oil and wears the chief priest’s clothes is chief over his brothers. He must never mourn by leaving his hair uncombed or by tearing his clothes. 11 He must never go near any dead bodies or become unclean, even for his father or mother. 12 He must not leave the holy tent of his Elohim. If he does, he will be dishonoring it, because he is dedicated with the anointing oil of his Elohim. I am Yahweh.

13 “The anointed priest must marry a virgin. 14 He must never marry a widow, a divorced woman, a woman who has lost her virginity, or a prostitute. He may only marry a virgin from his own people. 15 He must not dishonor his children among his people because I, Yahweh, set him apart as holy.”

16 Yahweh spoke to Moses, 17 “Tell Aaron: If any of your descendants (now or in future generations) has a physical defect, he must never bring food to offer to Elohim. 18 Indeed, no one who has a physical defect may ever come near the altar. That means anyone who is blind or lame, who has a disfigured face, a deformity, 19 or a crippled hand or foot, 20 who is a hunchback or dwarf, who has defective sight, skin diseases, or crushed testicles. 21 If a descendant of the priest Aaron has a physical defect, he must never bring sacrifices by fire to Yahweh. He has a defect. He must never bring food to offer to Elohim. 22 He may eat the food of his Elohim—what is holy and what is very holy. 23 However, he must never come up to the canopy or to the altar, since he has a physical defect. He must never dishonor the holy places because I, Yahweh, set them apart as holy.”

24 So Moses spoke to Aaron and his sons and to all the Israelites.

Eating the Priests’ Share of the Sacrifice

22 Yahweh spoke to Moses, “Tell Aaron and his sons that they must respect the holy offerings which the Israelites set apart for me. In this way they will not dishonor my holy name. I am Yahweh.

“Tell them: In future generations if any of your descendants, while unclean, comes near the holy offerings the Israelites set apart for Yahweh, that person must be excluded from my presence. I am Yahweh.

“No descendant of Aaron who has a skin disease or a discharge may eat any of the holy offerings until he is clean. Any person who has an emission of semen or touches a dead body, an unclean swarming creature or an unclean person will be unclean until evening. He must not eat any of the holy offerings unless he has washed himself. When the sun has set, he will be clean. Then he may eat the holy offerings because they are his food. He must never eat the meat of an animal that dies naturally or is killed by wild animals. It will make him unclean. I am Yahweh. The priests must do what I order, or their sin will bring them death because they dishonored a holy offering. I am Yahweh, who sets them apart as holy.

10 “Laypeople must never eat any holy offering, even if they are visiting a priest or are working for him. 11 But if a priest buys a slave, the slave and anyone born in his household may eat the priest’s food. 12 However, if a priest’s daughter marries a layman, she must never eat the food taken from the holy contributions. 13 If a priest’s daughter is widowed or divorced, doesn’t have any children, and comes back to live in her father’s home, she may eat her father’s food. But a layperson must never eat it.

14 “Those who eat a holy offering by mistake must give another holy offering to the priest and add one-fifth more to it. 15 Priests must not dishonor the holy offerings that the Israelites contribute to Yahweh. 16 They must make those people pay the penalty for their guilt because they have eaten the priests’ holy offerings. I am Yahweh, who sets them apart as holy.”

Mark 9:1-29

He said to them, “I can guarantee this truth: Some people who are standing here will not die until they see the kingdom of God arrive with power.”

Moses and Elijah Appear with Jesus(A)

After six days Yeshua took only Peter, James, and John and led them up a high mountain where they could be alone.

Yeshua’s appearance changed in front of them. His clothes became dazzling white, whiter than anyone on earth could bleach them. Then Elijah and Moses appeared to them and were talking with Yeshua.

Peter said to Yeshua, “Rabbi, it’s good that we’re here. Let’s put up three tents—one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” (Peter didn’t know how to respond. He and the others were terrified.)

Then a cloud overshadowed them. A voice came out of the cloud and said, “This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him!”

Suddenly, as they looked around, they saw no one with them but Yeshua.

On their way down the mountain, Yeshua ordered them not to tell anyone what they had seen. They were to wait until the Son of Man had come back to life. 10 They kept in mind what he said but argued among themselves what he meant by “come back to life.” 11 So they asked him, “Don’t the experts in Moses’ Teachings say that Elijah must come first?”

12 Yeshua said to them, “Elijah is coming first and will put everything in order again. But in what sense was it written that the Son of Man must suffer a lot and be treated shamefully? 13 Indeed, I can guarantee that Elijah has come. Yet, people treated him as they pleased, as Scripture says about him.”

Jesus Cures a Demon-Possessed Boy(B)

14 When they came to the other disciples, they saw a large crowd around them. Some experts in Moses’ Teachings were arguing with them. 15 All the people were very surprised to see Yeshua and ran to welcome him.

16 Yeshua asked the experts in Moses’ Teachings, “What are you arguing about with them?”

17 A man in the crowd answered, “Teacher, I brought you my son. He is possessed by a spirit that won’t let him talk. 18 Whenever the spirit brings on a seizure, it throws him to the ground. Then he foams at the mouth, grinds his teeth, and becomes exhausted. I asked your disciples to force the spirit out, but they didn’t have the power to do it.”

19 Yeshua said to them, “You unbelieving generation! How long must I be with you? How long must I put up with you? Bring him to me!”

20 They brought the boy to him. As soon as the spirit saw Yeshua, it threw the boy into convulsions. He fell on the ground, rolled around, and foamed at the mouth.

21 Yeshua asked his father, “How long has he been like this?”

The father replied, “He has been this way since he was a child. 22 The demon has often thrown him into fire or into water to destroy him. If it’s possible for you, put yourself in our place, and help us!”

23 Yeshua said to him, “As far as possibilities go, everything is possible for the person who believes.”

24 The child’s father cried out at once, “I believe! Help my lack of faith.”

25 When Yeshua saw that a crowd was running to the scene, he gave an order to the evil spirit. He said, “You spirit that won’t let him talk, I command you to come out of him and never enter him again.”

26 The evil spirit screamed, shook the child violently, and came out. The boy looked as if he were dead, and everyone said, “He’s dead!”

27 Yeshua took his hand and helped him to stand up.

28 When Yeshua went into a house, his disciples asked him privately, “Why couldn’t we force the spirit out of the boy?”

29 He told them, “This kind of spirit can be forced out only by prayer.”[a]

Psalm 43

Psalm 43

Judge me, O Elohim,
and plead my case against an ungodly nation.
Rescue me from deceitful and unjust people.
You are my fortress, O Elohim!
Why have you rejected me?
Why must I walk around in mourning
while the enemy oppresses me?
Send your light and your truth.
Let them guide me.
Let them bring me to your holy mountain
and to your dwelling place.
Then let me go to the altar of Elohim, to God my highest joy,
and I will give thanks to you on the lyre, O Elohim, my Elohim.

Why are you discouraged, my soul?
Why are you so restless?
Put your hope in Elohim,
because I will still praise him.
He is my savior and my Elohim.

Leviticus 19:1-20:21 ~ Mark 8:11-38 ~ Psalm 42:1-11 ~ Proverbs 10:17

Today is the 26th day of February.  Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible.  I’m Brian.  It is awesome to be here with you today as we step through the threshold and into this brand new week before us.  I love these beginnings of weeks because it is a fresh start.  No matter what happened last week, this isn’t last week anymore.  This is this week and we get to choose what this week is going to look like as we walk with God.  So we’ll go back out into the desert.  We’ll continue hearing the laws and customs and rituals being given to a people whose identity is being changed from slave to chosen, and this week we’ll read from the Names of God Bible, which is interesting because anytime the name of God is used, it is given in its original language.  So today we begin with Leviticus chapter 19, verse 1 through 20, verse 21.

Prayer

Father, we thank you for your word and we thank you for this brand new week. Father, we consecrate this week in advance.  We choose in advance to follow you, to walk with you, to be intimate with you, to be friends with you.  You’ve told us in the Proverbs today whoever practices discipline is on the way to life. That is what we want this week to look like because we don’t want to ignore it, ignore a warning and stray off. We know that story.  We know that story too well and we know where those side paths take us, down into the valley of the shadow, when you have invited us to walk along the peaks with you and see the vistas of this beautiful earth and this beautiful life that is ever unfolding before us as we collaborate with you in it.  So come, Holy Spirit.  We invite you fully and completely, without reservation.  We will walk with you and acknowledge you in every way.  Our lives will mimic the psalms.  Why are we discouraged?  Why are we so restless?  We will put our hope in you.  We will still praise you.  You are our Savior and God.  So come Holy Spirit, we pray.  In the name of Jesus we ask.  Amen.

Community Prayer Requests and Praise Reports

Good morning.  My name is Nancy from Rockford, IL.  I’ve been a Dabber for four years and this is probably the third time I’ve called in. I love listening to all your prayers every day and to Brian and Jill.  This podcast has been such a blessing to me in my daily walk with Jesus. The reason I’m calling today is because my husband has serious health issues and I haven’t called about it because we do trust that God has us in his hands, but I just wanted my Dabber family to know about it so that they could be praying for what God would have for Gary. My husband retired this past June, June of 2016 in good health and we were able to take a few trips and enjoy life and suddenly in October he found out that he had a big tumor in his left kidney. It was removed very quickly and taken out.  It was cancerous.  They got it all and he was on the mend.  A month later he drove his car into a creek, had a seizure.  They found out he had a brain tumor, so it was a God thing.  The brain tumor was removed.  It is cancerous.  He is going through 42 days of chemo and radiation and I just pray that God will be with him and I as we go through this journey together.  We don’t know what God would have for us, but I would love you to pray for him and for God to be with us and us to feel that.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.

Hello, this is Pamela from northern California.  This is where we make the Klean Kanteens and we do other things too.  We grow almonds and rice and we produce a lot to help feed the world.  Well, northern California has been in a drought and it has been many years.  I would have to say it looks like the drought is over. In fact, this last week the rain and it filling up of Oroville Dam, it got up to overflowing and 180,000 people were evacuated.  In that time of being displaced, neighbors reached out in neighboring cities and they opened their homes.  Churches opened up so that in that time of displacement, I feel like a lot of people felt God’s love for them.  My prayer is that the drought in all of us, that the things we’ve been praying for for so long, that there would be an overflowing and outpouring of God’s love and that he would nourish us all so that we could be the people he has called us to be and then produce good fruit that lasts, that will nourish the world.  Anyway, God bless you all.

Hi, this Max M. calling again.  My depression is off the charts.  I’m going off medication because of side effects that are adding to it, but it just seems like God is nowhere to be found.  The world just seems to be getting worse and worse.  It’s hard to pray.  It’s hard to read scripture.  And I just feel so alone.  I have my church and they help, but I feel like I want to do something but I don’t know what to do, especially with what is going on in our nation and in our world. So just please pray for me if you can. Thanks.  Bye.

Hey DAB family.  This is Byron out in Florida, Abiding in Him.  I’ve got some prayer requests for you guys for my wife and myself.  For my wife, she has been really having a hard time lately with the depression that she suffers from.  Lately we had some really good advancement and changes and things were looking bright and good, and they still are, but the last few weeks have been extremely difficult for her.  She has been talking about giving away the fish and there is a sadness that overwhelms her most of the time.  I just ask that you guys pray to help her through this rough patch.  She has actually started listening to the DAB on and off and she may be hearing this and if you are, baby, I love you very much and I just ask that you guys pray for her.  And for myself, in talking with my wife about things and observing things, I realized that I have a problem with impatience, that I’m not a very patient person, which is surprising to most people who know me because they see me as being fairly laid back, but I am I guess impatient for a lot of things, especially to see the movement of God in my life and in the life of others and it is holding me back severely. And I just ask that you guys pray for me in that regard, that I can learn that patience and receive that fruit of the spirit, because I know it’s not helping my wife and it’s not helping my children and it’s not helping me.  Things that God has me involved in is not helping my work.  So just please pray for us.  God is with us.  He is helping us walk through this stuff together, but we just need his guidance of his Holy Spirit and we just covet your guys’ prayers.  We thank you that we can talk to you guys, our family, about all this stuff.  Love you. Bye.

Hi Dabbers.  My name is Vanessa.  I live in Oregon.  I’ve been listening for years.  I’m a first-time caller.  I love you guys.  I’m just calling for a prayer for my mom.  Her health has been going downhill for the last three months.  She has been in and out of the hospital.  My sisters and my dad and I have been doing our best to take care of her and get her to her appointments and keep her strong.  My dad is not going to do too good without her, so I’ll take any prayers I can get, that her health might be restored and that my family can keep it together.  Thanks a lot.  I love you guys.  Bye.

Hi.  This is Diane from Pennsylvania and I call today not so much for a prayer request, but I just wanted to praise and adore and extol the Lord Jesus.  I praise you, Lord Jesus, for you are the word made flesh.  You are my rock and my refuge.  I praise you for being the potter and the pearl of great price, the fountain of living water, the rose of Sharon.  I praise you for being the lion of Judah and the suffering servant. I praise you, Jesus, for being the apple of my eye and my best friend.  I praise you, Jesus, for being the answer to every question and the solution to every problem.  I praise you, Jesus, for you are my foundation, my safe harbor.  I praise you, Jesus.  You are my healer, my provider.  You are lovely and gracious.  You are my cornerstone and you are our bridegroom.  You are the Prince of Peace, the fountain of living water, the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world.  I praise you, Jesus, for you’re the affection of my heart.  You are longsuffering.  You are wonderful.  You are the Lord of lords, the King of kings.  You are the alpha and the omega.  I praise you, Jesus, for you are my treasure.  You are my supply.  You are my blanket.  You are my covering.  I praise you, Jesus, for you are my mighty fortress and I praise you, Jesus, for you are my wall of fire.  I praise you, Jesus, for you are my vindicator and you are my divine physician. I just wanted to take time out to praise you.  You are the bread of life and my safeguard.  Thank you.  Thank you, Daily Audio Bible.  Bye.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Sunday February 26, 2017 (NIV)

Leviticus 19:1-20:21

Duties of the People Toward God

19 Yahweh spoke to Moses, “Tell the whole congregation of Israel: Be holy because I, Yahweh your Elohim, am holy.

“Respect your mother and father. Observe my days of worship. I am Yahweh your Elohim.

“Don’t turn to worthless gods or cast metal idols. Never make any gods for yourselves. I am Yahweh your Elohim.

“When you bring a fellowship offering to Yahweh, sacrifice it properly so that you will be accepted. Eat your sacrifice on the day you bring it and on the next day. On the third day burn whatever is left over. If you eat any of it on the third day, it is repulsive and will not be accepted. Those who eat it will be punished because they have dishonored what is holy to Yahweh. They must be excluded from the people.

Duties of the People Toward Each Other

“When you harvest the grain in your land, don’t harvest the grain in the corners of your fields or gather what is left after you’re finished. 10 Don’t harvest your vineyard a second time or pick up fallen grapes. Leave them for poor people and foreigners. I am Yahweh your Elohim.

11 “Never steal, lie, or deceive your neighbor.

12 “Never swear by my name in order to deceive anyone. This dishonors the name of your Elohim. I am Yahweh.

13 “Never oppress or rob your neighbor. Never keep the pay you owe a hired worker overnight. 14 Never curse deaf people or put anything in the way of blind people to make them stumble. Instead, fear your Elohim. I am Yahweh.

15 “Don’t be corrupt when administering justice. Never give special favors to poor people, and never show preference to important people. Judge your neighbor fairly. 16 Never gossip. Never endanger your neighbor’s life. I am Yahweh.

17 “Never hate another Israelite. Be sure to correct your neighbor so that you will not be guilty of sinning along with him. 18 Never get revenge. Never hold a grudge against any of your people. Instead, love your neighbor as you love yourself. I am Yahweh.

Other Duties

19 “Obey my laws. Never crossbreed different kinds of animals. Never plant two kinds of crops in your field. Never wear clothes made from two kinds of material.

20 “If a man has sexual intercourse with a female slave who is engaged to another man and if her freedom was never bought or given to her, they should not be put to death. He will only pay a fine because she is a slave. 21 He must bring a ram for his guilt offering to Yahweh at the entrance to the tent of meeting. 22 In Yahweh’s presence the priest will use them to make peace with the Lord for this sin. The man will be forgiven for this sin.

23 “When you come into the land and plant all kinds of fruit trees, you must not eat the fruit for the first three years. 24 In the fourth year all the fruit will be a holy offering of praise to Yahweh. 25 In the fifth year you may eat the fruit. Do this to make the trees produce more for you. I am Yahweh your Elohim.

26 “Never eat any meat with blood still in it.

“Never cast evil spells, and never consult fortunetellers.

27 “Never shave the hair on your foreheads, and never cut the edges of your beard. 28 Never slash your body to mourn the dead, and never get a tattoo. I am Yahweh.

29 “Never dishonor your daughter by making her a prostitute, or the country will turn to prostitution and be filled with people who are perverted.

30 “Observe my days of worship and respect my holy tent. I am Yahweh.

31 “Don’t turn to psychics or mediums to get help. That will make you unclean. I am Yahweh your Elohim.

32 “Show respect to the elderly, and honor older people. In this way you show respect for your Elohim. I am Yahweh.

33 “Never mistreat a foreigner living in your land. 34 Foreigners living among you will be like your own people. Love them as you love yourself, because you were foreigners living in Egypt. I am Yahweh your Elohim.

35 “Don’t be corrupt when administering justice concerning length, weight, or measuring liquid. 36 Use honest scales, honest weights, and honest measures. I am Yahweh your Elohim who brought you out of Egypt.

37 “Obey all my laws and all my rules, and live by them. I am Yahweh.”

Punishment for Serious Crimes

20 Yahweh spoke to Moses, “Tell the Israelites: If Israelites or foreigners living among you give one of their children as a sacrifice to the god Molech, they must be put to death. The common people must stone them to death. I will condemn them and exclude them from the people. They gave one of their children to Molech, made my holy tent unclean, and dishonored my holy name. If the common people ignore those who give their children to Molech and do not put them to death, I will condemn them and their families. I will exclude them from the people. I will exclude from the people everyone who chases after Molech as if he were a prostitute.

“I will condemn people who turn to mediums and psychics and chase after them as though they were prostitutes. I will exclude them from the people.

“Live holy lives. Be holy because I am Yahweh your Elohim. Obey my laws, and live by them. I am Yahweh who sets you apart as holy.

“Whoever curses his father or mother must be put to death. He has cursed his father or mother and deserves to die.

10 “If a man commits adultery with another man’s wife or with his neighbor’s wife, both he and the woman must be put to death for their adultery. 11 Whoever has sexual intercourse with his father’s wife has violated his father’s marriage. Both he and his father’s wife must be put to death. They deserve to die. 12 If a man has sexual intercourse with his daughter-in-law, both of them must be put to death. They have done a disgusting thing and deserve to die. 13 When a man has sexual intercourse with another man as with a woman, both men are doing something disgusting and must be put to death. They deserve to die. 14 When a man marries a woman and her mother, they have done a perverted thing. The man and the two women must be burned. Never do this perverted thing. 15 A man who has sexual intercourse with an animal must be put to death. You must kill the animal, too. 16 When a woman offers herself sexually to any animal, you must kill both the woman and the animal. They must be put to death. They deserve to die. 17 Whoever takes his sister, his father’s daughter or his mother’s daughter, and has sexual intercourse does a shameful thing. They both must be publicly excluded from the people. He has had sexual intercourse with his sister and must be punished. 18 If a man has sexual intercourse with a woman while she has her monthly period, both of them have had sexual intercourse in blood. They must be excluded from the people. 19 Never have sexual intercourse with your mother’s sister or your father’s sister. Whoever has sexual intercourse with a close relative must be punished. 20 Whoever has sexual intercourse with his uncle’s wife violates his uncle’s marriage. That man and woman are guilty of sin. They will die without children. 21 Whoever marries his brother’s wife violates his brother’s marriage and does an unclean thing. That man and woman will have no children.

Mark 8:11-38

The Pharisees Ask for a Sign from Heaven(A)

11 The Pharisees went to Yeshua and began to argue with him. They tested him by demanding that he perform a miraculous sign from heaven.

12 With a deep sigh he asked, “Why do these people demand a sign? I can guarantee this truth: If these people are given a sign, it will be far different than what they want!”

13 Then he left them there.

The Yeast of the Pharisees(B)

He got into a boat again and crossed to the other side of the Sea of Galilee. 14 The disciples had forgotten to take any bread along and had only one loaf with them in the boat.

15 Yeshua warned them, “Be careful! Watch out for the yeast of the Pharisees and the yeast of Herod!”

16 They had been discussing with one another that they didn’t have any bread.

17 Yeshua knew what they were saying and asked them, “Why are you discussing the fact that you don’t have any bread? Don’t you understand yet? Don’t you catch on? Are your minds closed? 18 Are you blind and deaf? Don’t you remember? 19 When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets did you fill with leftover pieces?”

They told him, “Twelve.”

20 “When I broke the seven loaves for the four thousand, how many large baskets did you fill with leftover pieces?”

They answered him, “Seven.”

21 He asked them, “Don’t you catch on yet?”

Jesus Gives Sight to a Blind Man

22 As they came to Bethsaida, some people brought a blind man to Yeshua. They begged Yeshua to touch him. 23 Yeshua took the blind man’s hand and led him out of the village. He spit into the man’s eyes and placed his hands on him. Yeshua asked him, “Can you see anything?”

24 The man looked up and said, “I see people. They look like trees walking around.”

25 Then Yeshua placed his hands on the man’s eyes a second time, and the man saw clearly. His sight was normal again. He could see everything clearly even at a distance. 26 Yeshua told him when he sent him home, “Don’t go into the village.”

Peter Declares His Belief about Jesus(C)

27 Then Yeshua and his disciples went to the villages around Caesarea Philippi. On the way he asked his disciples, “Who do people say I am?”

28 They answered him, “Some say you are John the Baptizer, others Elijah, still others one of the prophets.”

29 He asked them, “But who do you say I am?”

Peter answered him, “You are the Messiah!”

30 He ordered them not to tell anyone about him.

Jesus Foretells That He Will Die and Come Back to Life(D)

31 Then he began to teach them that the Son of Man would have to suffer a lot. He taught them that he would be rejected by the leaders, the chief priests, and the experts in Moses’ Teachings. He would be killed, but after three days he would come back to life. 32 He told them very clearly what he meant.

Peter took him aside and objected to this. 33 Yeshua turned, looked at his disciples, and objected to what Peter said. Yeshua said, “Get out of my way, Satan! You aren’t thinking the way God thinks but the way humans think.”

What It Means to Follow Jesus(E)

34 Then Yeshua called the crowd to himself along with his disciples. He said to them, “Those who want to follow me must say no to the things they want, pick up their crosses, and follow me. 35 Those who want to save their lives will lose them. But those who lose their lives for me and for the Good News will save them. 36 What good does it do for people to win the whole world yet lose their lives? 37 Or what should a person give in exchange for life? 38 If people are ashamed of me and what I say in this unfaithful and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of those people when he comes with the holy angels in his Father’s glory.”

Psalm 42

BOOK TWO

(Psalms 42–72)

Psalm 42

For the choir director; a maskil[a] by Korah’s descendants.

As a deer longs for flowing streams,
so my soul longs for you, O Elohim.
My soul thirsts for Elohim, for El Chay.
When may I come to see Elohim’s face?
My tears are my food day and night.
People ask me all day long, “Where is your Elohim?”
I will remember these things as I pour out my soul:
how I used to walk with the crowd
and lead it in a procession to Elohim’s house.
I sang songs of joy and thanksgiving
while crowds of people celebrated a festival.

Why are you discouraged, my soul?
Why are you so restless?
Put your hope in Elohim,
because I will still praise him.
He is my savior and my Elohim.

My soul is discouraged.
That is why I will remember you
in the land of Jordan, on the peaks of Hermon, on Mount Mizar.
One deep sea calls to another at the roar of your waterspouts.
All the whitecaps on your waves have swept over me.[b]
Yahweh commands his mercy during the day,
and at night his song is with me—
a prayer to the El of my life.
I will ask Elohim, my rock,
“Why have you forgotten me?
Why must I walk around in mourning
while the enemy oppresses me?”
10 With a shattering blow to my bones,
my enemies taunt me.
They ask me all day long, “Where is your Elohim?”

11 Why are you discouraged, my soul?
Why are you so restless?
Put your hope in Elohim,
because I will still praise him.
He is my savior and my Elohim.

Leviticus 16:29-18:30 ~ Mark 7:24-8:9 ~ Psalm 41:1-13 ~ Proverbs 10:15-16

Today is February 25th.  Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible.  I’m Brian and I just threw another log on the global campfire.  It’s nice and warm here and I’m glad we can be together today, illuminated and warmed by the word of God in community.  So we’re going to go back out where we’ve been spending significant time in the wilderness with the children of Israel as they are learning their new identity.  We’re reading from the God’s Word translation, Leviticus chapter 16, verse 29 through 18, verse 30 today.

Prayer

Father, we thank you for another day in your word and nearly another week. The days and the weeks, they go by, and yet your word, it keeps bubbling forth.  We find ourselves in situations or in encounters with people and we see the old path, the old habits that we would immediately and initially fall into being challenged because your word is inside of us now.  So we’re beginning to think twice about what we’re doing and what we’re saying.  But we also see the struggle to maintain that, the vigilance that is required, that it is not something that is just going to happen.  It is something that is planted in us and then brings forth fruit. So Father, as we cultivate this and as your Holy Spirit leads and guides us, we want to be good soil in every conceivable way.  We want to bring your kingdom.  We want to participate.  We want to collaborate and so we open ourselves to you once again fully. Nothing is off limits to you and we invite your Holy Spirit to lead, counsel, comfort, rebuke, discipline us this day in any way we need.  It is our desire to walk with you intimately, to know you, to know you more today than we did yesterday, and to know you more tomorrow than we do today.  This is our desire.  Come Holy Spirit, we pray.  In the name of Jesus.  Amen.

Announcements

Www.DailyAudioBible.com is home.  It’s home base.  It’s the website.  It’s where you find out what is going on around here, so be sure to check it out. Check out the prayer wall.  We do a good job of praying for each other around here as a community.  That is one of the most beautiful things that I think has come out of this over the years. It is just a true modeling of the body of Christ.  So yes, there are the calls for sure, but there is a prayer wall at www.DailyAudioBible.com where you can post requests and get responses or read through and pray for people and respond to them, let them know they are being heard.  It is a beautiful thing, so check that out.

The More Gathering for Women is coming up in April, which is not as far away as you might think.  Look at where we are.  We’re almost through the month of February and it was just New Year’s.  So April is coming up faster than we think.  I want to invite you ladies to a really rich, rich time of just rediscovering your own heart and reconnecting with God in ways that you just rarely have time for.  It is really remarkable.  So you can find that at www.DailyAudioBible.com as well.  All the details, all the information, you won’t have any problem finding it.

If you want to partner with the Daily Audio Bible in the mission that we share as a community to keep this rhythm of the scripture central, then thank you humbly, truly, profoundly.  Thank you. There is a link on the home page of www.DailyAudioBible.com.  Or if you’re using the Daily Audio Bible App, you can press the More button in the lower right-hand corner.  Or if you prefer, the mailing address is P.O. And, as always, if you have a prayer request or comment, there is the prayer wall that I was just talking about, or you can call (877) 942-4253.

And that’s it for today.  I’m Brian. I love you and I will be waiting for you here tomorrow.

Community Prayer Requests and Praise Reports

Hello.  Hi. This is Sarah, the psychologist calling from Connecticut and it is my first time calling and, in fact, I am a very new believer.  I just started January 1st listening to this Daily Audio Bible and it is transformative.  And I was listening as I was driving into work and I heard Prayer Warrior Princess, Jen in Southern California and what she said so moved me.  Bravo, Jen.  I have some of the same issues about math and you really got me thinking about some healing for me around that.  So thank you for that and blessings on you and I’m so happy.  Honey, you said that you’re 41.  You are a baby.  You have years and years ahead of you to enjoy math.  And I’m 53 and I think I’ve got a lot of years too, God willing. Secondly, I wanted to talk to the man, Lori from California who called on February 16th asking for prayer. He said I need Jesus to work in my life. He’s had a couple of really hard years. I felt so maternal.  I still do.  I felt so maternal to you that I just felt so proud of you for calling.  I know how hard it is, especially for men to ask for help and I just felt the light radiating from you filling me. That you can put down your armor and open yourself to being supported and loved by this community, by your church, by Jesus, by God…

Hi Dabbers.  This is Lorraine from Sherrill, NY.  This is for Charles in Branden, FL.  I recently lost my husband, Ron, Charles.  It was almost 44 years too.  I feel your pain, my friend.  I’m praying that you find comfort in the Lord.  I looked this up on Bible Gateway.  Psalm 31:9. It says be merciful to me, Lord, for I am in distress.  My eyes grow weak with sorrow, my soul and body with grief.  Thank you, everybody.  I love you all and I pray for you all as I hear your prayers.  This is Lorraine from Sherrill, NY.

Hi, this is Victorious Soldier.  I’m calling tonight to pray for Kristen, for her marriage.  I want to pray for…I didn’t get the lady’s name, but her niece Jody who is dying of brain cancer.  I want to pray for Lori who has been struggling and he really needs some help. Lord, I just want to pray for him right now.  Lord, you touch Lori, Lord, that he is seeking for you, and you said anyone who seeks you will find you.  Lord, I just ask you to touch Lori, in the name of Jesus.  He needs you now, Lord.  O Lord, you are a right now God.  Let him know that you are God and that you are with him and that he is not alone.  O Lord, I thank you for lifting up Lori, in the name of Jesus.  I thank you for lifting up Kristen’s marriage.  I thank you for touching Jody’s niece, Lord, who is dying of cancer. O Lord, you are a God that can stop anything, Lord.  O Lord, you are a God that can heal.  O Lord, you are a God that can move like none other.  You are Jehovah.  You are the great Jehovah.  O Lord, I thank you for touching Jody.  Lord, you touch her heart.  You touch her and let her know that you love her and that she is not alone, Lord.  In the name of Jesus, Lord, you have your way. O Lord, we thank you, Lord.  We thank you, Lord, also for touching Jen in SoCal.  We ask you to touch her, Lord, and continue to bless her to learn the math, Lord.  To bless her to continue to move forward and let you heal the hurt that has been going through her life.  Lord, we thank you for Jen in SoCal.  We just thank you for her, Lord.  O Lord, we thank you for Marcia, Lord.  We ask you to touch that marriage, the one in West Virginia, Cory’s marriage.  Lord, you can do everything but fail.  O Lord, in the name of Jesus, we…

Hi there all my Daily Audio Bible friends.  This is Lisa.  I hope your day is fantastic.  This is Lisa, the Encourager.  I’m calling to encourage Mary Ellen.  Mary Ellen called about her still having some issues with her marriage, rocky marriage. The Lord just laid a little bit on my heart before I called tonight about…  I’ve been married a little while, so I did have a point in my marriage where I made a turn.  Where I did a shift, a paradigm shift.  I really realized that this was the key to it.  So I’m just going to share that with you and hopefully that will help.  If not, Mary Ellen, maybe somebody else. First of all, one thing I would do, sometimes I would cut my husband down, so I made a pledge that I would never do that again and I would only hold him in adoration.  If he ever did anything that bothered me like threw the towel down after taking a shower or not putting the cap on the toothpaste, you know all those little things that drive you crazy, I would just say, you know what, this is my gift to him and I pick it up and I say I’m giving him the grace and that is my gift to my husband.  And I’m doing it for God.  God sees that glory.  Then if he said something to me that kind of pushed some of my buttons, I would just hold my tongue and just not come back.  I would do whatever I could to just hold my tongue and just not say with a comeback, you know, just hold it.  And then I would also look at my husband’s strengths.  You know how you always have a list of things — I wish he did this, I wish he did that, so instead of having that list in my head, I would just say let me look at all the things he has, the reason I married him, the reason he is wonderful.  So I hope those help you guys out.

Hello, good morning family.  Its Erin from Michigan.  I hope you’re all doing well and may the peace of God fill your day today.  I have a comment and a I have a prayer request. My prayer request is for my colleagues.  I teach at a public school and, as many of you know, there is a lot going on in the public school system today and some good, a lot good, actually.  Some that is good and some that needs fixing and a lot of people talking about it that maybe might not understand what is going on.  So anyway, lots of prayer for public school teachers and students and those that support and staff, so lots of prayer needed for those that are charged with the education of our future.  So that is A.  And then B, I wanted to read a part.  I started reading Reframe today.  I woke up early because my mind is full of turmoil, and so I did what would bring me peace and that is to listen to my Daily Audio Bible, hold my kitty cat and now since the podcast is over, I thought I would read the first chapter of Reframe that I’ve been meaning to read.  So just quickly, on page 4 going on to page 5:  That you are here is a gift, a beautiful, extravagant, decadent, overgenerous, expensive gift.  Something precious given by one who is hopelessly in love with you, desperately enamored of you, fascinated beyond words of you, and longing to collaborate in what comes next for you.  God is so invested in you that he put his own breath in you, molded you in his image and stood back and said that you are good.  Thank you, Brian, for this gorgeous book.  Thank you for helping us have a relationship with God and helping us remember that we are so very loved.  And you are loved, Brian.  You are loved, Jill.  You are loved, family.  I pray for you.  I love you and I wish you a most blessed day.  Thanks.

Hi DAB family.  It’s Kathleen and __________ and __________ family to pray in particular for the Christians in Iraq right now as our troops are going in and trying to free Mosul from the ISIS fighters there.  There are many, many people trapped and there are actually many Christians trapped in there and they are facing death.  They are because of the ISIS __________ get closer to them, they are killing these people and in horrible ways.  I had just read about one who was crucified, so I want to lift them up into our prayers. I know we have many, many issues here that we pray about and those are all important and they are all real, but I just want you to please realize there are some people out there that are facing death for their beliefs, just for their belief in Christ.  I just ask that you would lift them up in prayer.  I also pray for wisdom for our government __________. We are in such a chaotic time right now. So thank you, believers.  I love you so much.  God bless you.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Saturday February 25, 2017 (NIV)

Leviticus 16:29-18:30

29 “This will be a permanent law for you: On the tenth day of the seventh month both native Israelites and foreigners must humble themselves. They must do no work. 30 On this day Aaron will make peace with the Lord to make you clean. Then you will be clean from all your sins in the Lord’s presence. 31 This is the most important worship festival there is for you. You will humble yourselves. It is a permanent law. 32 The priest who is anointed and ordained to serve as chief priest in his father’s place will pay for sins. He will put on the holy linen clothes 33 and will make peace with the Lord at the holy place, the tent of meeting, and the altar. He will make peace with the Lord for the priests and all the worshipers.

34 “This permanent law tells you how to make peace with the Lord once a year for all the sins the Israelites committed.”

Aaron did as the Lord had commanded Moses.

Eating Sacrifices

17 The Lord spoke to Moses, “Tell Aaron, his sons, and all the Israelites that this is what the Lord has commanded: Any Israelite who slaughters a bull, sheep, or goat inside or outside the camp is guilty of bloodshed. He has shed blood and must be excluded from the people. Bring the animal to the entrance of the tent of meeting. Offer it to the Lord in front of the Lord’s tent. This means that the people of Israel must take the sacrifices they have been making in the open fields and bring them to the Lord. They must bring them to the priest at the entrance to the tent of meeting. The people will sacrifice them as fellowship offerings to the Lord. The priest will pour the blood against the Lord’s altar at the entrance to the tent of meeting. He will burn the fat as a soothing aroma to the Lord. The people must stop sacrificing to goat idols and chasing after them as though they were prostitutes. This is a permanent law for the people and for future generations.

“Tell them: If Israelites or foreigners make burnt offerings or sacrifices but do not bring them to the entrance of the tent of meeting to offer them to the Lord, they must be excluded from the people.

Eating Blood

10 “If Israelites or foreigners eat any blood, I will condemn them and exclude them from the people, 11 because blood contains life. I have given this blood to you to make peace with me on the altar. Blood is needed to make peace with me. 12 That is why I have said to the people of Israel: Neither you nor foreigners should ever eat blood.

13 “If Israelites or foreigners hunt any animal or bird that may be eaten, they must pour out the animal’s blood and cover it with dirt. 14 This is because the life of any creature is in its blood. So I have said to the people of Israel: Never eat any blood, because the life of any creature is in its blood. Whoever eats blood must be excluded from the people.

15 “Native Israelites or foreigners who eat the body of an animal that dies naturally or is killed by another animal must wash their clothes and their bodies. They will be unclean until evening. Then they will be clean. 16 If they don’t wash their clothes and their bodies, they will be guilty of sin.”

Forbidden Sexual Practices

18 The Lord spoke to Moses, “Tell the Israelites: I am the Lord your God. You used to live in Egypt. Don’t live the way the Egyptians do. I am bringing you to Canaan. Don’t live the way the Canaanites do. Never live by their standards. Follow my rules, and live by my standards. I am the Lord your God. Live by my standards, and obey my rules. You will have life through them. I am the Lord.

“Never have sexual intercourse with anyone related to you by blood. I am the Lord.

“Never have sexual intercourse with your mother. She is your own mother. Never have sexual intercourse with her. Never have sexual intercourse with your stepmother. She is related to you through your father. Never have sexual intercourse with your stepsister, whether she is your father’s daughter or your mother’s daughter. It makes no difference whether or not she was born in your house. 10 Never have sexual intercourse with your granddaughter, whether she is your son’s daughter or your daughter’s daughter, because she is related to you. 11 Never have sexual intercourse with a daughter of your father and his wife. She is your own sister. 12 Never have sexual intercourse with your father’s sister. She is your paternal aunt. 13 Never have sexual intercourse with your mother’s sister. She is your maternal aunt. 14 Never have sexual intercourse with the wife of your father’s brother. She, too, is your aunt. 15 Never have sexual intercourse with your daughter-in-law. She is your son’s wife. Never have sexual intercourse with her. 16 Never have sexual intercourse with your sister-in-law. She is your brother’s wife. 17 Never have sexual intercourse with a woman and her daughter or a woman and her granddaughter. They are related. Doing this is perverted. 18 While your wife is living, never marry her sister as a rival wife and have sexual intercourse with her.

19 “Never have sexual intercourse with a woman while she is unclean during her monthly period. 20 Never have sexual intercourse with your neighbor’s wife and become unclean with her. 21 Never give your children as sacrifices to the god Molech by burning them alive. If you do, you are dishonoring the name of your God. I am the Lord. 22 Never have sexual intercourse with a man as with a woman. It is disgusting. 23 Never have sexual intercourse with any animal and become unclean with it. A woman must never offer herself to an animal for sexual intercourse. It is unnatural.

Punishment for Sexual Sins

24 “Do not become unclean in any of these ways. By these practices all the nations which I am forcing out of your way have become unclean. 25 The land has become unclean. I will punish it for its sins. The land will vomit out those who live in it. 26 Live by my standards, and obey my rules. Neither you nor any foreigner should ever do any of these disgusting things. 27 The people of the land who were there before you did all these disgusting things. As a result, the land has become unclean. 28 If you make the land unclean, it will vomit you out as it has vomited out the people who were there before you. 29 Whoever does any of these disgusting things must be excluded from the people. 30 So you must follow my instructions. Don’t live by the standards of the people who lived there before you. What they do is disgusting. Never become unclean that way. I am the Lord your God.”

Mark 7:24-8:10

The Faith of a Greek Woman(A)

24 Jesus left that place and went to the territory of Tyre. He didn’t want anyone to know that he was staying in a house there. However, it couldn’t be kept a secret.

25 A woman whose little daughter had an evil spirit heard about Jesus. She went to him and bowed down. 26 The woman happened to be Greek, born in Phoenicia in Syria. She asked him to force the demon out of her daughter.

27 Jesus said to her, “First, let the children eat all they want. It’s not right to take the children’s food and throw it to the dogs.”

28 She answered him, “Lord, even the dogs under the table eat some of the children’s scraps.”

29 Jesus said to her, “Because you have said this, go! The demon has left your daughter.”

30 The woman went home and found the little child lying on her bed, and the demon was gone.

Jesus Cures a Deaf Man

31 Jesus then left the neighborhood of Tyre. He went through Sidon and the territory of the Ten Cities[a] to the Sea of Galilee.

32 Some people brought to him a man who was deaf and who also had a speech defect. They begged Jesus to lay his hand on him. 33 Jesus took him away from the crowd to be alone with him. He put his fingers into the man’s ears, and after spitting, he touched the man’s tongue. 34 Then he looked up to heaven, sighed, and said to the man, “Ephphatha!” which means, “Be opened!” 35 At once the man could hear and talk normally.

36 Jesus ordered the people not to tell anyone. But the more he ordered them, the more they spread the news. 37 Jesus completely amazed the people. They said, “He has done everything well. He makes the deaf hear and the mute talk.”

Jesus Feeds Four Thousand(B)

About that time there was once again a large crowd with nothing to eat. Jesus called his disciples and said to them, “I feel sorry for the people. They have been with me three days now and have nothing to eat. If I send them home before they’ve eaten, they will become exhausted on the road. Some of them have come a long distance.”

His disciples asked him, “Where could anyone get enough bread to feed these people in this place where no one lives?”

Jesus asked them, “How many loaves of bread do you have?”

They answered, “Seven.”

He ordered the crowd to sit down on the ground. He took the seven loaves and gave thanks to God. Then he broke the bread and gave it to his disciples to serve to the people. They also had a few small fish. He blessed them and said that the fish should also be served to the people. The people ate as much as they wanted. The disciples picked up the leftover pieces and filled seven large baskets. About four thousand people were there. Then he sent the people on their way.

10 After that, Jesus and his disciples got into a boat and went into the region of Dalmanutha.

Psalm 41

Psalm 41

For the choir director; a psalm by David.

Blessed is the one who has concern for helpless people.
The Lord will rescue him in times of trouble.
The Lord will protect him and keep him alive.
He will be blessed in the land.
Do not place him at the mercy of his enemies.
The Lord will support him on his sickbed.
You will restore this person to health when he is ill.

I said, “O Lord, have pity on me!
Heal my soul because I have sinned against you.”
My enemies say terrible things about me:
“When will he die, and when will his family name disappear?”
When one of them comes to visit me, he speaks foolishly.
His heart collects gossip.
Then he leaves to tell others.
Everyone who hates me whispers about me.
They think evil things about me and say,
“A devilish disease has attached itself to him.
He will never leave his sickbed.”
Even my closest friend whom I trusted,
the one who ate my bread,
has lifted his heel against me.
10 Have pity on me, O Lord!
Raise me up so that I can pay them back
11 and my enemy cannot shout in triumph over me.
When you do this, I know that you are pleased with me.
12 You defend my integrity,
and you set me in your presence forever.

13 Thank the Lord God of Israel through all eternity!
Amen and amen!

Leviticus 15:1-16:28 ~ Mark 7:1-23 ~ Psalm 40:11-17 ~ Proverbs 10:13-14

Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible.  Today is February 24th and I’m Brian.  It’s great to be here with you today from the rolling hills of Tennessee, of course, where I am longing for springtime.  I don’t want to be ungrateful.  Winter is just getting long here.  We don’t get the snow that some of you get.  I know you’re like you’re so lucky, but we get gray and brown and an occasional day with some sunshine.  So, from the rolling hills of Tennessee, I am thrilled to be here with you and looking for springtime which will start to show up in the next month. Thank you, Jesus.

We’re reading from the God’s Word translation.  We’re going back out to the desert and we’re hearing of the laws that God is instituting for a culture that he is forming and it is going to be good times today, so buckle in.  Leviticus chapter 15, verse 1 through 16:28.

Commentary

In the book of Leviticus today, we learn of the concept of a scapegoat, of a transferring of the sins of the people onto a goat who would then be sent back to Azazel.  Now, who is Azazel?  What is that about?  That is an interesting question because we don’t exactly know for sure.  It is a lost Hebrew word.  This has been studied by scholars for centuries and basically comes down to this.  It is either like an abstract place name, like a state of being, like it means utterly removed into a wasteland, so sent away to never return again into the wilderness. So the scapegoat was sent away where it can never return, gone forever.  That is completely plausible, but there is a school of thought among scholars that Azazel was the name of a fallen spiritual being and that school of thought comes because Azazel is named in the noncanonical book of Enoch.  There are books that were holy books that have not become canonical as the Bible but still have importance in the faith of both Jews and Christians.  Enoch would fall into that category.  Azazel is named in Enoch as a leader of fallen angels, a misleader of humankind. So if that were the case, then sending this goat back to Azazel would be to send the sins of the people back to where they came from in the first place.  So, fascinating stuff and there is our biblical trivia for the day.

In the book of Mark, Jesus is simply reiterating what he is constantly not only saying but living.  Life, your true life, your true self comes from the inside out, not the outside in. This all takes place in a conversation about his disciples being unclean, something that we’re learning quite a bit about in the book of Leviticus.  There are clean things and there are unclean things.  And we’ve talked about that, because it is no different today.  Maybe the things are different, but there is clean and there is unclean and there are things that defile us and make us unclean.  I mean, it doesn’t take a degree in theology to figure that out. All we have to do is examine our own lives and our own hearts and we know this.  So the religious leaders over 1000 years later are still working through what clean and unclean is and how it has morphed and changed over time.  And Jesus is saying you’ve changed this. You’ve changed the meaning of what this was supposed to be in the culture, why this was a law in the first place, and you’ve used it in improper ways to enslave the people.  It’s not what goes in that is going to make you unclean. It is what is coming out of your heart. In this we can see clearly that life is from the inside out.

So what is inside of us that is unclean?  That is what matters because that cannot coexist with the divine spirit of the living God that is also within us.  So even in the book of Leviticus, when God says you can’t bring uncleanness into the holy place, you cannot make my tabernacle unclean, that still applies today.  We are the temple of the Lord’s spirit on this earth now.  It is the same thing.  We cannot make that unclean and be holy at the same time.  Jesus gives us instructions for the way to interpret and look at that.  It is what is within that is coming out that indicates what is unclean.

Prayer

Father, plenty of things can bubble up by the power of your Holy Spirit right now even as we’re talking to you about this.  Plenty of things.  We invite your Holy Spirit to show us the places that are unclean.  That is not what we want.  That is not who we were created to be and that is not who we want to be.  So we invite your Holy Spirit to come, consecrate our hearts.  Wash us clean.  Send away forever the things that are not clean to us and fill us again with the power of your Holy Spirit to lead and guide us on the narrow path that leads to life.  We ask this, Jesus, in your name and because of your work to redeem us.  Amen.

That is from Satan and if you will resist, he will leave.  Brother, you’re not alone.  You are receiving prayer.  There are thousands of people around the world who have heard your request and will pray for you and are praying for you.  My wife and I will be praying for you with great regularity.  You will notice an uplifting of the spirit and he will come to you and you will just suddenly find yourself more joyful, more confident.  Be encouraged, brother, and carry on.  We love you.  Bye-bye.

Hi everybody.  This is Lisa, the Encourager.  I hope you guys are doing great tonight.  I am wanting to pray tonight for Kevin in Cali because it has really touched my heart. He has three boys, Levi, Moses, and Tekoa.  What beautiful, strong names those are, Kevin.  I know when you named each one of them, it meant a lot to you and I know that you’re missing your boys and they are away from you right now and I am praying for reconciliation through all of that.  So I’m definitely going to be praying for you tonight.  I’m also going to be praying for Irma in Canada.  She needs healing in the hospital and they can’t find the source of the pain or what’s wrong.  My grandmother’s name is Irma, so I am so happy to pray for Irma in Canada.  And one more prayer.  I’m going to pray for Dwayne’s nephew tonight that has brain cancer.  So let’s pray.  Dear Lord, I pray for Levi, Moses, and Tekoa tonight wherever they lay their heads down, that you will just bless them individually, Lord.  And I pray, God, that you will just mark their path to be a good and positive path so that they can find you, Lord, in each part of their lives.  And I pray, Lord Jesus, for Kevin to just give all of that over to you, just help him to release it and give it all over to you and just put you in control, put you in the driver’s seat, Lord, so that you can direct that in the right direction because we cannot fix it.  We can’t make it better.  We can’t do it without you, God.  So just please, please, Lord, just take the steering wheel for him in this and just let him hand it over to you and just…

Hello family.  This is Justin from Sacramento.  And I just wanted to call to try to get everybody to do a reframe.  When you feel like you’re being oppressed by somebody or mistreated by somebody, reframe your opinion or your viewpoint and try to take the God side of you and see that that person most likely needs what you have. They were probably not put in your life to torment you, but you were put in their life to show them what we have. We have the love of God and it is a beautiful thing that should be shared.  We may be missing opportunities to share with others what we have because we’re not able to step out of our own situation and see that they are the ones that need the help.  I know I’m not very good at this myself, but I’m hoping to get better and I hope that I’ve said something that somebody can use.  I love you all.  Go out, make it a great day and show your love to the world.  That is how they will know you.  They will know that you are his by your love.  Love you all.

Good morning DAB family.  I’m Carol again from the UK.  A few weeks ago I mentioned my husband who will be 87 next month.  He believes in God and that Jesus was his Son who died and rose again, but has not made that commitment.  I fear he may be in the early stages of dementia, although he is in complete denial. He does get very confused and forgetful. My children say it is just his age. Well, I’m hoping the latter is right, but I ask you to pray for him to accept Jesus in his heart, in his life before it is too late.  He is a good and honest man, doing everything to help anyone, and I know people think that this is good enough to enter God’s kingdom, but not to allow Jesus in their lives is not a guarantee.  Please pray for him to just open up his heart.  I’ve tried and prayed for him for many years, but in vain, so he desperately  needs prayer to help him realize that being a good person is just not sufficient enough.  As Jesus told Nicodemus, unless one is born again, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.  Thank you so much and God bless you all.

Hi Daily Audio Bible family.  This is Janine calling from Virginia.  I’m calling today to ask for prayers.  As a child I was frequently sexually abused, physically abused, and emotionally abused. My father was an alcoholic who held my mother and my brother and I captive with the promise that he would kill my brother and I in front of her and then kill her.  Needless to say, every part of me, my life was blown to bits.  I’ve battled and still battle PTSD, depression, anxiety, low self-worth, difficulty with relationships, and the list goes on and on. My father died from cancer and my family and I are safe now, but we still suffer the effects of that living nightmare.  DAB family, I’m asking for your prayers, that the Lord will put all the broken pieces together, that we can experience total healing, and live a life filled with joy, peace, and love.  I listen to Daily Audio Bible every day and I listen to your prayers and I pray for you too, Daily Audio Bible family.  I love you all.  I thank you.

Leviticus 15:1-16:28

Bodily Discharges from Men

15 The Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, “Tell the Israelites: If a man has a discharge from his penis, his discharge is unclean. He is unclean because of the discharge from his penis. Whether it is chronic or not makes no difference; he is still unclean.

“The man who has a discharge makes everything he lies on or sits on unclean. Those who touch his bed must wash their clothes and their bodies. They will be unclean until evening. Those who sit on anything he sat on must wash their clothes and their bodies. They will be unclean until evening. Those who touch a man who has a discharge must wash their clothes and their bodies. They will be unclean until evening. If a man who has a discharge spits on anyone who is clean, the person he spits on must wash his clothes and his body. He will be unclean until evening. When a man who has a discharge sits on a saddle, it becomes unclean. 10 Those who carry such things must wash their clothes and their bodies. They will be unclean until evening. 11 If a man who has a discharge touches anyone without first rinsing his hands, the person he touched must wash his clothes and his body. He will be unclean until evening. 12 When a man who has a discharge touches pottery, it must be broken, and any wooden bucket he touches must be rinsed.

13 “When a man’s discharge stops, he must wait seven days to be cleansed. He must wash his clothes and his body in fresh water. Then he will be clean. 14 On the eighth day he must take two mourning doves or two pigeons and come into the Lord’s presence at the entrance to the tent of meeting. He will give these birds to the priest. 15 The priest will sacrifice one as an offering for sin and the other as a burnt offering. So in the Lord’s presence, the priest will make peace with the Lord for the man who had a discharge.

16 “If a man has an emission of semen, he must bathe his whole body. He will be unclean until evening. 17 Any clothes or any leather with semen on it must be washed. It will be unclean until evening.

18 “When a man has sexual intercourse with a woman and has an emission of semen, they must wash themselves. They will be unclean until evening.

Bodily Discharges from Women

19 “When a woman has her monthly period, she will be unclean for seven days. Those who touch her will be unclean until evening. 20 Everything she lies on or sits on during her period will be unclean. 21 Those who touch her bed must wash their clothes and their bodies. They will be unclean until evening. 22 Those who touch anything she sits on must wash their clothes and their bodies. They will be unclean until evening. 23 If her blood touches anything on the bed or anything she sits on, it will be unclean until evening. 24 If a man has sexual intercourse with her while she has her period, he will be unclean for seven days. Any bed he lies on will become unclean.

25 “If a woman has a discharge of blood for many days other than her monthly period, she is unclean. If her period lasts longer than usual, she will be unclean as long as she has a discharge. It is like her period. 26 As long as she has a discharge, any bed she lies on or anything she sits on is unclean. It is like her period. 27 Those who touch these things are unclean and must wash their clothes and their bodies. They will be unclean until evening.

28 “When her discharge stops, she must wait seven days. After that, she will be clean. 29 On the eighth day she must take two mourning doves or two pigeons and bring them to the priest at the entrance to the tent of meeting. 30 The priest will offer one as an offering for sin and the other as a burnt offering. So in the Lord’s presence the priest will make peace with the Lord for the woman who had an unclean discharge.

31 “You must separate the Israelites from anything that keeps them from being presentable to me. Otherwise, they will die because they make my tent, which is among them, unclean.

32 “These are the instructions for any man who has a discharge or an emission of semen that makes him unclean, 33 for any woman who has her period, for any man or woman who has a discharge, or for any man who has sexual intercourse with a woman when she is unclean.”

The Day for Making Peace with the Lord

16 The Lord spoke to Moses after Aaron’s two sons had come into the Lord’s presence and died. The Lord said, “Tell your brother Aaron that he cannot go into the holy place whenever he wants to. If he goes up to the canopy and stands in front of the throne of mercy on the ark, he will die, because I appear in the smoke above the throne of mercy.

“This is what Aaron must do in order to come into the holy place: He must take a bull as an offering for sin and a ram as a burnt offering. He must put on a holy linen robe and wear linen undergarments. He must wear a linen belt and turban. These are holy clothes. He must wash his body and put them on. He will take two male goats from the congregation of Israel as an offering for sin and a ram as a burnt offering.

“Aaron must sacrifice the bull as his own offering for sin. By doing this, he will make peace with the Lord for himself and his family. He must take the two male goats and bring them into the Lord’s presence at the entrance to the tent of meeting. Then Aaron must throw lots for the two goats. One lot will be for the Lord and the other for Azazel. [a] Aaron must sacrifice the goat chosen by lot for the Lord as an offering for sin. 10 But he must bring the goat chosen by lot for Azazel into the Lord’s presence. He will release it in the desert to Azazel in order to make peace with the Lord for himself and his family.

11 “Aaron will bring the bull. He will then slaughter it as his own offering for sin. By doing this he will make peace with the Lord for himself and his family. 12 He will take an incense burner full of burning coals from the altar, which is in the Lord’s presence, and two handfuls of finely ground, sweet-smelling incense. He will bring them up to the canopy. 13 Then he will put the incense on the fire in the Lord’s presence. The cloud of incense will cover the throne of mercy, which is over the words of God’s promise, so that he will not die. 14 He will take some of the bull’s blood and sprinkle it with his finger on the east side of the throne of mercy. Then he will sprinkle some of the blood with his finger seven times in front of the throne of mercy.

15 “Next, Aaron will slaughter the goat for the people’s offering for sin. He will take the blood inside, go up to the canopy, and sprinkle it on the throne of mercy and in front of it, as he did with the bull’s blood. 16 So he will make peace with the Lord for all the sins the Israelites committed against the holy place. These sins happened because the Israelites were unclean and because they committed rebellious acts. He will do the same for the tent of meeting which is among an unclean people. 17 No one may be in the tent of meeting from the time Aaron enters the holy place to do this until he comes out. Aaron will make peace with the Lord for his own sins, his family’s sins, and the sins of the entire assembly of Israel. 18 Then he will go out to the altar that is in the Lord’s presence and make peace with the Lord there for the sins committed. He will take some of the blood from the bull and some of the goat’s blood and put it all around the horns of the altar. 19 With his finger he will sprinkle some of the blood on it seven times. Because the Israelites made it unclean, he will cleanse it and declare it holy.

20 “When he finishes making peace with the Lord at the holy place, the tent of meeting, and the altar, he will bring the living goat forward. 21 Aaron will place both hands on its head. He will confess over it all the sins, all the rebellious acts, and all the things the Israelites did wrong. He will transfer them to the goat’s head. A man will be appointed to release the goat in the desert. 22 The goat will take all their sins away to a deserted place. The man must release the goat in the desert.

23 “Then Aaron will go to the tent of meeting, take off the linen clothes he had put on to go into the holy place, and leave them there. 24 He will wash his body in the holy place and put on his other clothes. Then he will come out and sacrifice the burnt offering for himself and for the people to make peace with the Lord for his own sins and the sins of the people. 25 He will burn the fat of the offering for sin on the altar.

26 “The man who released the goat to Azazel must wash his clothes and his body. Then he may return to the camp. 27 He must take the bull and the goat outside the camp. These animals were the offering for sin whose blood was brought into the holy place to make peace with the Lord for sins. The skin, meat, and excrement from the animals must be burned. 28 Whoever burns them must wash his clothes and his body. Then he may return to the camp.

Mark 7:1-23

Jesus Challenges the Pharisees’ Traditions(A)

The Pharisees and some experts in Moses’ Teachings who had come from Jerusalem gathered around Jesus. They saw that some of his disciples were unclean[a] because they ate without washing their hands.

(The Pharisees, like all other Jewish people, don’t eat unless they have properly washed their hands. They follow the traditions of their ancestors. When they come from the marketplace, they don’t eat unless they have washed first. They have been taught to follow many other rules. For example, they must also wash their cups, jars, brass pots, and dinner tables.[b])

The Pharisees and the experts in Moses’ Teachings asked Jesus, “Why don’t your disciples follow the traditions taught by our ancestors? They are unclean because they don’t wash their hands before they eat!”

Jesus told them, “Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites in Scripture:

‘These people honor me with their lips,
but their hearts are far from me.
Their worship of me is pointless,
because their teachings are rules made by humans.’

“You abandon the commandments of God to follow human traditions.” He added, “You have no trouble rejecting the commandments of God in order to keep your own traditions! 10 For example, Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother’ and ‘Whoever curses father or mother must be put to death.’ 11 But you say, ‘If a person tells his father or mother that whatever he might have used to help them is corban (that is, an offering to God), 12 he no longer has to do anything for his father or mother.’ 13 Because of your traditions you have destroyed the authority of God’s word. And you do many other things like that.”

14 Then he called the crowd again and said to them, “Listen to me, all of you, and try to understand! 15 Nothing that goes into a person from the outside can make him unclean. It’s what comes out of a person that makes him unclean. 16 Let the person who has ears listen!”[c]

17 When he had left the people and gone home, his disciples asked him about this illustration.

18 Jesus said to them, “Don’t you understand? Don’t you know that whatever goes into a person from the outside can’t make him unclean? 19 It doesn’t go into his thoughts but into his stomach and then into a toilet.” (By saying this, Jesus declared all foods acceptable.) 20 He continued, “It’s what comes out of a person that makes him unclean. 21 Evil thoughts, sexual sins, stealing, murder, 22 adultery, greed, wickedness, cheating, shameless lust, envy, cursing, arrogance, and foolishness come from within a person. 23 All these evils come from within and make a person unclean.”

Psalm 40:11-17

11 Do not withhold your compassion from me, O Lord.
May your mercy and your truth always protect me.
12 Countless evils have surrounded me.
My sins have caught up with me so that I can no longer see.
They outnumber the hairs on my head.
I have lost heart.

13 O Lord, please rescue me!
Come quickly to help me, O Lord![a]
14 Let all those who seek to end my life
be confused and put to shame.
Let those who want my downfall
be turned back and disgraced.
15 Let those who say to me, “Aha! Aha!”
be stunned by their own shame.
16 Let all who seek you rejoice and be glad because of you.
Let those who love your salvation continually say,
“The Lord is great!”

17 But I am oppressed and needy.
May the Lord think of me.
You are my help and my savior.
O my God, do not delay!

Leviticus 14:1-57 ~ Mark 6:30-56 ~ Psalm 40:1-10 ~ Proverbs 10:11-12

Today is February 23rd.  Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible.  I am Brian and I am ready to go.  It’s great to be here with you today for the next step forward in the adventure that we’re on that takes us through the Bible and all of its twists and turns and drama and intrigue and opening of our souls that happens because of it.  So we’re back out to the desert.  The law is being given, how this new culture that is being created out of the dust of the wilderness will actually look and behave.   Leviticus chapter 13, verses 1-57 today, and we’re reading from the God’s Word translation this week.

Commentary

So we talked about mold and skin rashes and all of that kind of stuff yesterday. In the book of Leviticus today, we’re kind of seeing here’s what you do.  This is the law, so let’s take that in context because it is very easy to get lost in the tedium of the law.  That wouldn’t be any different today.  I mean, google a law book or find a law book and start reading and if you’re not a lawyer and enmeshed in all that, well, it’s not exactly page turner stuff.  So we are reading the law being given in the Old Testament and we can think the same thing, it’s not page turner stuff, but when we understand the greater context, that out of the dust of the wilderness, truly, a people are being formed, a culture, a nation, a holy, set apart people of the God of all things.  He is giving out these customs, rituals, traditions, behaviors.  This is how the culture is supposed to be shaped. We live in cultures and we know the laws that are going to get us in trouble and then we have some social understandings of how we’re supposed to conduct ourselves toward each other to live in unity and harmony.  We have these understandings.  That is what we are watching in the Old Testament.  So maybe not riveting page turning stuff, but important foundational things, just as the foundational, fundamental, deep laws of the nations that we live in form the culture that we live in.  The irony is, in so many places these understandings, these rules and rituals that we just kind of take for granted, that have just always been there, they come from here in the book of Leviticus.  So it is fascinating stuff.

Let’s talk about Jesus for a second.  So in the book of Mark you watch Jesus now becoming a bit of a public figure, a bit of a celebrity.  He can’t really go anywhere inconspicuously and he can’t really get away inconspicuously either.  I mean, there is no black SUV waiting out back for Jesus to jump into so he can be whisked out of town to somewhere that no one knows.  There is no ‘Elvis has left the building.’  They follow Jesus everywhere and sometimes he even gets into boats to get away for a second, even if it is just out on the water for a second. He is trying to go somewhere where he can invest specific time into his disciples, have some specific time between him and the Father and they are everywhere.  So we see a group of 5000 people that have followed him and he feeds them.  Before all of that happened, all he was trying to do was get away for a second with the disciples who had just returned from mission of their own that he had commissioned them to do.  So he wants to just like debrief them and have just some time to talk and spend some time together.  He’s trying to get that, but he can’t get that.  People are chasing him.  That is how he feeds the 5000 people.

After that is all over, he sends the disciples back across the lake and he is just going to chill.  And he does. And he’s in a place where he can see the boat on the water and that the wind is against the disciples and he’s just going to go ahead and beat them.  Right?  So he starts walking on the water and he walks past them and he’s just going to keep on going, but they see him and freak.

I’m kind of in that camp.  I think that is what I would do in the same situation.  If I am out in a boat in the dark, trying to get across the lake without a motor or anything like that, we’re just rowing, and the wind is blowing and then all of a sudden there is a dark shadow on the water shaped like a person walking, I think I would, I don’t know, probably wet my pants a little bit. And the disciples are doing similarly. Their response when Jesus speaks is fascinating.  “Calm down. It’s me.  Don’t be afraid.”  That right there says a lot to us.  Maybe we’re not out in the dark on a lake trying to cross the sea when a shadowy figure comes, but we have these kinds of situations in our lives all the time where it is dark, where it is as if we are out in the open water and we’re praying, ‘Lord, help rescue me.  Save me.’ And then he comes and we freak out. We’re either afraid or afraid to lose control, afraid to trust, afraid to believe.  And Jesus comes and says, “Calm down, it’s me.  Don’t be afraid.”

This was a disrupting thing for the disciples out on the lake that night. It was a disruptive rescue which is so often the way God works in our lives.  He comes crashing in, disrupting what our status quo is because it is not going to get us anywhere, and he comes for us and then we freak out.  And he just says, “Chill out, calm down, settle down. It’s me.  There is nothing to be afraid of here.  I’ve got you.  I have got you.”  And then we choose.  We choose to believe that or we keep on rowing against the wind.

So what is that thing that is your dark lake?  Where are you rowing against the wind?  What if Jesus is coming and you’re just spiraling, just thrashing?  He’s right there and you’re praying for his presence, but you have a preconceived notion of what that has to look like.  And yet he comes – “Calm down, it’s me.  Don’t be afraid.”

Prayer

Jesus, here we are.  Each of us has this story.  Each of us do, and many of us are out on a dark lake, rowing against the wind now in some sort of way in our lives and so we invite you into that, Jesus.  All this thrashing about it not getting us closer to shore.  All this expended effort is not getting us there.  And here you come.  So we will obey you.  We will calm down.  We will not be afraid.  We are with you.  So come, Holy Spirit.  Come into all of the issues in our lives that are dark and against the wind because we need you in them.  We have an idea of how we would like you to calm the wind and get us to shore, but this doesn’t matter anymore.  We’re letting go of that.  We won’t thrash in that.  If we never get to the shore but we are with you, who cares?  This is all we need, you, your presence in everything that we do and say and think.  So come Holy Spirit, you are so welcome and invited here.  We pray this in the name of Jesus, amen.

Community Prayer Requests and Praise Reports

May the Lord bless you and keep you.  May the Lord make his face to shine upon you.  I pray he gives you peace and that all that you have will increase and that your blessings will never ever cease and your light be one big gigantic peace. But the truth of the matter is that the road is long and rough.  The battles are hard and tough.  That your best is never good enough and Satan will always call your bluff.  But I know that you can make it.  I know that you can stand.  The Lord will not forsake you and there is not much he’ll demand.  Keep your eyes upon his promises.  Let your vows be firm and true.  Let your friends be in his service.  Let his spirit yours renew.  Don’t be afraid to call his name when problems are too tough.  You might have to do some fasting too when prayer just isn’t enough.  But whatever problems come your way, whatever storms may rise, if you just stay faithful to the Lord, in time you’ll gain the prize.  Honesty and integrity are things you must possess.  If humbly you just ask for strength, he’ll give you all the rest. The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face to shine upon you.  I pray that he gives you peace and that all that you have will increase.  May your blessings never ever cease and your light be one big gigantic peace.  Best wishes always, BlindTony1016@gmail.com.  Delta Alpha Foxtrot, David F., where are you, brother?  You still there?  Also Roger G., are you still there too?  Time to check in, y’all.

Good morning Daily Audio Bible.  This is Michael calling from snowy, or not anymore snowy New Hampshire. It is Sunday morning and I am just calling for prayer for my wife who, due to alcoholism, I’ve had to move on from her and get her her own place and could not live with her anymore.  I ask that you pray she is healed by the Lord’s touch.  And just as importantly is my son or our son who has been I guess you would say kind of torn apart by all of this and he’s been through lots and lots of trials and tribulations, all because of her drinking.  It has been a really, really long road, a long battle these last few years. He spent his first night at her new place last night.  She has been there for about three weeks.  I had a hard time with it and I just pray that he is okay and she takes care of him and doesn’t do any crazy stuff.  It’s very scary right now.  Again, I appreciate all your prayers on this.  My son is a faithful prayer warrior himself.  He’s only 8.  He’s a true believer and is always asking me questions.  It’s a great thing, but my wife has totally fallen out of her beliefs within the last year or so and she has had three major deaths in her family and lots of struggles for her.  No excuse. I pray that the Lord releases Satan’s grip on her and I just want to say thank you again, Brian, for this life-changing Daily Audio Bible. And thank you everybody.

This is Cynthia in Virginia.  I’m a new listener and have gotten quite a bit out of being part of this community. I’m journaling my Bible as I listen to the lessons each day and it has been quite meaningful.  I want to ask for prayers for my son.  My son has been diagnosed with failure to thrive and has been in the hospital three times in the last six months and if you could pray for him as he journeys on.  He is only 2, but we want him to get better and we look forward to growing and nurturing him as he gets better.  Please pray for him.  Thank you.

Hi family.  This is Biola from Maryland.  I hope you’re all doing well.  Brian and Jill, God bless you.  Jill, you know I’m praying for the More Conference.  Sister, I’m praying for the group as well.  Ladies, if you haven’t registered, I’m still encouraging you.  Register.  Father, I pray that you will put funds in people’s hands, in the name of Jesus.  Those who desire to go and do not have the money, Lord, surprise them miraculously, in the name of Jesus.  While I’m on the issue of funds, people, I want to encourage you to also give to this ministry, Daily Audio Bible, because this is a ministry that feeds most of us spiritually in addition to our local churches.  So give, give, give and God will bless you as you do so. God bless you.  Bill B., immediately I heard your prayer request, both of them, as a matter of fact, I prayed for you, man of God.  And I pray that Lord, Jehovah Rapha himself will continue to arise over you with healing in his wings, in the name of Jesus.  That everything that is still left in your body needs to align with the word of God.  I command it to begin to do so, in the name of Jesus, because by the stripes of Jesus Christ, brother, you have been healed.  You know that.  I know that. God bless you.  Victorious Soldier, just as I was thinking about you, on one of the podcasts you came on.  Sister, I want to pray that God would encourage you, God would continue to strengthen you, God would continue to make his face shine upon you, God would give you favor and blessings that you do not know about, in the name of Jesus. Reggie, my brother, my brother in Nairobi, my heart broke when I heard your prayer request and I did pray for you, but I wanted to call in and acknowledge that I prayed for you and I’m praying, brother, that the Lord of heaven, Jehovah Jireh, El Shaddai God, the many breasted one, the one who is more than enough will arise in the name of Jesus and will listen to you and will begin to orchestrate events in Nairobi, Kenya so that people will look at you and go, “We want that man in our company.”  So it shall be.  I begin to decree jobs unto you.  Jobs, open doors, in the name of Jesus.

Good morning guys.  This is Jen in SoCal, aka Prayer Warrior Princess.  I was listening to the community prayers for this weekend.  Today is the 19th and I stopped after I heard Chante call and share something and I wanted to give you a shout-out, sister.  I go through the same thing almost after every single time I call.  The spiritual battle mentally is merciless.  Sometimes I actually have lost sleep over it, thinking ‘oh, I shouldn’t have called.  I shouldn’t have said that.”  Or “I think I said that wrong” or whatever.  First it leads me to pray against that because I know now.  I’m 50.  I’ve been with the Lord 23 years and I know that is not me.  That is not the Lord.  He is not shame based.  He is not ugly to us like that.  He never talks to us like that.  So I know that is the enemy and his fiery darts.  So I pray through the armor of God for myself and then it always leads me to pray for Brian and his family, because I can’t even imagine.  I hear pastors often talk about the Monday syndrome where they want to die because they are under such spiritual attack after they’ve been preaching over the weekend.  And so I can’t imagine the warfare that Brian and his family go through with him giving us the word and preaching to us every single day.  So anyways, it always leads me to pray for Brian and his family after I have those experiences.  Just know, Chante, you’re not alone.  I believe we’re all getting attacked in that way.  That is a very, very, sadly, common way the enemy tries to get to us and pick us off and alienate us from one another.  So I love you and I’m with you, sister.  Bye.

Hello Daily Audio Bible family.  This is Jay from New Jersey calling to pray for Alicia from Kansas.  Heavenly Father, in the mighty name of Jesus, God, we thank you now for this miracle that you have provided through sparing Alicia’s life.  Father, we thank you for speaking to her through the Holy Spirit in a way that she could hear you to get out of the car so that she would not be struck again by another driver.  Father, we thank you for there only being minimal injuries.  Father, we thank you now for there only being her glasses being lost.  Father, you are an amazing God.  You are great.  You are mighty.  You are powerful.  Father, we thank you.  We thank you. We thank you.  We thank you.  God, now we pray and we know that you will heal Alicia.  We know it, God.  We know it. You saved her life, so we know you will heal her. So Father, we pray that you will just do it in a way that only you know how.  God, we thank you for sparing her life. We thank you for sparing her terrible, terrible injuries.  Father, we ask that you will provide her with a pair of glasses that will be such a miracle that it can only be described as coming from you.  Father, we edify you now.  We praise you now.  We glorify you now, Father, through this thing which we know you have done.  Father, we ask that this will be a testimony to others who are unbelievers so that they can see, so that they can be awestruck and wonder how it is that Alicia survived this accident, so that she may let them know that it was only by the glorious grace of our God.  We thank you now.  In the name of Jesus Christ we pray, amen.  Love you, Alicia.  I’m so happy and so grateful and so blessed that God has spared you in this accident and I’m still praying for you.  God bless.
