Isaiah 6:1-7:25, 2 Corinthians 11:16-33, Psalms 54:1-7, Proverbs 23:1-3

Today is the 10th day of September. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian. And it is always a pleasure to be here with you. I mean, who wouldn’t want to be with you? You’re awesome! You are a child of the Most High God. It’s an honor to be here with you today as we take the next step forward in our adventure through the Scriptures. And we’re just getting going in this week, but we’re reading from the New International Version this week. And we’re just getting going in the book of Isaiah. Today we’ll read Isaiah chapter 6 and 7.

Commentary:

Okay. So, in 2nd Corinthians, Paul is boasting. (Brian laughs). And it’s an interesting kind of boasting because it’s not like boasting in an achievement. It’s boasting in who has suffered the most for Christ. What had happened was people were traveling around the churches. And there were a lot of nuanced teachings going around. And people were accepting these people into the church and hearing the gospel that they preached. And a lot of the time that had to do with what they had endured to get there. And then Paul was being lumped into this manipulative group. And believe me, I’m oversimplifying this because it’s not the point. Nevertheless, Paul was exasperated because he’s like, Hey, you guys. You guys know what we… You know what we went through to bring the gospel to you. We were the first ones here. You know what it took to get to you. And now that we’ve paved the way, all these other people are coming in and telling you all these stories and you’re just eating it up. And questioning the very people who risked their very lives to get to you with the gospel. So, Paul’s like, If they’re gonna boast, then I’m gonna be a fool and do the same thing. I don’t wanna reduce myself into this kind of contest about who has suffered the most for Jesus, but let’s just state the facts. Are they Hebrews? So, am I. Are they Israelites? So, am I. Are they Abraham’s descendants? So, am I. Are they servants of Christ? And he goes on and on and on. The interesting thing about this boasting, though, is that it shows what Paul was willing to go through with his team. What we would now call a leadership team. With his team, this is what they were willing to endure to bring the gospel. Alright, think about some of this stuff. I’ve been in prison more frequently, been flogged more severely, been exposed to death again and again, five times I received from the Jews the forty lashes minus one. Three times I was beaten with rods, once I was pelted with stones, three times I was shipwrecked. I spent a night and day in the open sea. And on and on he goes trying to say something that we need to pay attention to. This is the price. This is what it takes sometimes to bring the gospel. And although maybe the circumstances may not be one for one related to each other, this is what a pastor has to endure to care for a congregation. And Paul says it best. Beside everything else I have to go through, I face daily the pressure of my concern for the churches. Who is weak and I do not feel weak? Who is led into sin and I do not inwardly burn? And so what is his conclusion? If I gotta do this contest, if I’ve gotta boast, then all I can do is boast about the things that show how weak I am and how I am not equipped to do this. And how I do not know how this is being sustained. The God and Father of the Lord Jesus, who is to be praised forever, knows that I’m not lying. And those of you who are pastors in this community throughout the world, you know he’s not lying because in your own context, in your own way, you understand exactly what he’s talking about. It’s a high price to be a leader in God’s kingdom because the stakes are so high. It’s a battle for the hearts of men. And it’s a battle for the hearts of men and women when sometimes their hearts don’t want to be rescued .Then you have to step back and watch them go down. And inwardly burn inside, as Paul said. So, let’s honor those in leadership over us today. Let’s consider the congregations that we’re all part of and who our pastors are. Let’s remember them in our prayers today. They could use it. And if this community, as vast and far flung as we are, all prayed for those in spiritual leadership today… Well, I have seen lots of really wonderful things happen through the prayers of God’s people in this community. And if anyone could use the prayers of God’s people, in this community today, it would be those in spiritual leadership.

Prayer:

So, Father, thank You for those that You have called who carry these heavy burdens. We ask that You give them rest. We ask that You give them comfort. We ask that You give them strength and stamina. We ask that they understand that it matters and that it continues to matter, that the burdens that they carry, although they may seem like they’re not being noticed, they are. We are grateful, God, for those that You have put in this world to lead and guide Your church. Come, Holy Spirit. Lead and guide them, we pray. Even as You lead and guide us individually through all of the myriad of issues in our lives. Come, Holy Spirit, we pray. In Jesus name. Amen.

Hello Daily Audio Bible this is Michelle from Gettysburg. I was so pumped up this morning, the 6th of September just listening to brothers and sisters around the campfire just calling it together. That group call was just beyond amazing, absolutely amazing, knowing that there’s a community out there prayerful  praying. I just…I love it…I…I can’t wait for the next Labor Day weekend Tennessee get together for Daily Audio Bible. I’m in a play that in right now into being. Hello brothers and sisters, just asking your prayer request for my mom who is…she’s a trooper…fighting cancer. It’s been beating her down. She is depressed. I pray that you would just __ she does listen to these calls. So, I hope that she hears this and knows she has brothers and sisters praying her through, praying for her strength to endure this. We’re praying that God takes this cancer out of her body and just believing that He is in control of every end of  what’s going on. I just ask that you would pray for her, lift her spirits, of course for this cancer to be gone, and just…she believes…she just needs the power to sustain that belief and have her faith just be strong…just be strong in the Lord. I am asking that. Thank you Daily Audio Bible family.

Good morning, this is Terry from California. I haven’t called in a while. I apologize. Praise report, my daughter is back home and is no longer in that living situation but the main reason why I called today because at my church we just got done with the book of James and I was really convicted of something about a confession that we confessed to each other. And when I did something 10 years ago, I cheated on my husband. I haven’t done it since. I haven’t thought about it since but it’s really been heavy on my heart since Sunday. I was really convicted on it and I know our God forgives and He’s an amazing Father and I just want to be obedient and confess what I did 10 years ago to my Daily Audio Bible family. I love you all. I appreciate you all and I hope you all have a good day. Bye.

Isaiah 6-7

Isaiah’s Commission

In the year that King Uzziah(A) died,(B) I saw the Lord,(C) high and exalted,(D) seated on a throne;(E) and the train of his robe(F) filled the temple. Above him were seraphim,(G) each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet,(H) and with two they were flying. And they were calling to one another:

“Holy, holy(I), holy is the Lord Almighty;(J)
the whole earth(K) is full of his glory.”(L)

At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke.(M)

“Woe(N) to me!” I cried. “I am ruined!(O) For I am a man of unclean lips,(P) and I live among a people of unclean lips,(Q) and my eyes have seen(R) the King,(S) the Lord Almighty.”(T)

Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a live coal(U) in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar. With it he touched my mouth and said, “See, this has touched your lips;(V) your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for.(W)

Then I heard the voice(X) of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send?(Y) And who will go for us?(Z)

And I said, “Here am I.(AA) Send me!”

He said, “Go(AB) and tell this people:

“‘Be ever hearing, but never understanding;
be ever seeing, but never perceiving.’(AC)
10 Make the heart of this people calloused;(AD)
make their ears dull
and close their eyes.[a](AE)
Otherwise they might see with their eyes,
hear with their ears,(AF)
understand with their hearts,
and turn and be healed.”(AG)

11 Then I said, “For how long, Lord?”(AH)

And he answered:

“Until the cities lie ruined(AI)
and without inhabitant,
until the houses are left deserted(AJ)
and the fields ruined and ravaged,(AK)
12 until the Lord has sent everyone far away(AL)
and the land is utterly forsaken.(AM)
13 And though a tenth remains(AN) in the land,
it will again be laid waste.(AO)
But as the terebinth and oak
leave stumps(AP) when they are cut down,
so the holy(AQ) seed will be the stump in the land.”(AR)

The Sign of Immanuel

When Ahaz(AS) son of Jotham, the son of Uzziah, was king of Judah, King Rezin(AT) of Aram(AU) and Pekah(AV) son of Remaliah(AW) king of Israel marched up to fight against Jerusalem, but they could not overpower it.

Now the house of David(AX) was told, “Aram has allied itself with[b] Ephraim(AY)”; so the hearts of Ahaz and his people were shaken,(AZ) as the trees of the forest are shaken by the wind.

Then the Lord said to Isaiah, “Go out, you and your son Shear-Jashub,[c](BA) to meet Ahaz at the end of the aqueduct of the Upper Pool, on the road to the Launderer’s Field.(BB) Say to him, ‘Be careful, keep calm(BC) and don’t be afraid.(BD) Do not lose heart(BE) because of these two smoldering stubs(BF) of firewood—because of the fierce anger(BG) of Rezin and Aram and of the son of Remaliah.(BH) Aram, Ephraim and Remaliah’s(BI) son have plotted(BJ) your ruin, saying, “Let us invade Judah; let us tear it apart and divide it among ourselves, and make the son of Tabeel king over it.” Yet this is what the Sovereign Lord says:(BK)

“‘It will not take place,
it will not happen,(BL)
for the head of Aram is Damascus,(BM)
and the head of Damascus is only Rezin.(BN)
Within sixty-five years
Ephraim will be too shattered(BO) to be a people.
The head of Ephraim is Samaria,(BP)
and the head of Samaria is only Remaliah’s son.
If you do not stand(BQ) firm in your faith,(BR)
you will not stand at all.’”(BS)

10 Again the Lord spoke to Ahaz, 11 “Ask the Lord your God for a sign,(BT) whether in the deepest depths or in the highest heights.(BU)

12 But Ahaz said, “I will not ask; I will not put the Lord to the test.(BV)

13 Then Isaiah said, “Hear now, you house of David!(BW) Is it not enough(BX) to try the patience of humans? Will you try the patience(BY) of my God(BZ) also? 14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you[d] a sign:(CA) The virgin[e](CB) will conceive and give birth to a son,(CC) and[f] will call him Immanuel.[g](CD) 15 He will be eating curds(CE) and honey(CF) when he knows enough to reject the wrong and choose the right, 16 for before the boy knows(CG) enough to reject the wrong and choose the right,(CH) the land of the two kings you dread will be laid waste.(CI) 17 The Lord will bring on you and on your people and on the house of your father a time unlike any since Ephraim broke away(CJ) from Judah—he will bring the king of Assyria.(CK)

Assyria, the Lord’s Instrument

18 In that day(CL) the Lord will whistle(CM) for flies from the Nile delta in Egypt and for bees from the land of Assyria.(CN) 19 They will all come and settle in the steep ravines and in the crevices(CO) in the rocks, on all the thornbushes(CP) and at all the water holes. 20 In that day(CQ) the Lord will use(CR) a razor hired from beyond the Euphrates River(CS)—the king of Assyria(CT)—to shave your head and private parts, and to cut off your beard(CU) also.(CV) 21 In that day,(CW) a person will keep alive a young cow and two goats.(CX) 22 And because of the abundance of the milk they give, there will be curds to eat. All who remain in the land will eat curds(CY) and honey.(CZ) 23 In that day,(DA) in every place where there were a thousand vines worth a thousand silver shekels,[h](DB) there will be only briers and thorns.(DC) 24 Hunters will go there with bow and arrow, for the land will be covered with briers(DD) and thorns. 25 As for all the hills(DE) once cultivated by the hoe, you will no longer go there for fear of the briers and thorns;(DF) they will become places where cattle are turned loose and where sheep run.(DG)

2 Corinthians 11:16-33

Paul Boasts About His Sufferings

16 I repeat: Let no one take me for a fool.(A) But if you do, then tolerate me just as you would a fool, so that I may do a little boasting. 17 In this self-confident boasting I am not talking as the Lord would,(B) but as a fool.(C) 18 Since many are boasting in the way the world does,(D) I too will boast.(E) 19 You gladly put up with(F) fools since you are so wise!(G) 20 In fact, you even put up with(H) anyone who enslaves you(I) or exploits you or takes advantage of you or puts on airs or slaps you in the face. 21 To my shame I admit that we were too weak(J) for that!

Whatever anyone else dares to boast about—I am speaking as a fool—I also dare to boast about.(K) 22 Are they Hebrews? So am I.(L) Are they Israelites? So am I.(M) Are they Abraham’s descendants? So am I.(N) 23 Are they servants of Christ?(O) (I am out of my mind to talk like this.) I am more. I have worked much harder,(P) been in prison more frequently,(Q) been flogged more severely,(R) and been exposed to death again and again.(S) 24 Five times I received from the Jews the forty lashes(T) minus one. 25 Three times I was beaten with rods,(U) once I was pelted with stones,(V) three times I was shipwrecked,(W) I spent a night and a day in the open sea, 26 I have been constantly on the move. I have been in danger from rivers, in danger from bandits, in danger from my fellow Jews,(X) in danger from Gentiles; in danger in the city,(Y) in danger in the country, in danger at sea; and in danger from false believers.(Z) 27 I have labored and toiled(AA) and have often gone without sleep; I have known hunger and thirst and have often gone without food;(AB) I have been cold and naked. 28 Besides everything else, I face daily the pressure of my concern for all the churches.(AC) 29 Who is weak, and I do not feel weak?(AD) Who is led into sin,(AE) and I do not inwardly burn?

30 If I must boast, I will boast(AF) of the things that show my weakness.(AG) 31 The God and Father of the Lord Jesus, who is to be praised forever,(AH) knows(AI) that I am not lying. 32 In Damascus the governor under King Aretas had the city of the Damascenes guarded in order to arrest me.(AJ) 33 But I was lowered in a basket from a window in the wall and slipped through his hands.(AK)

Psalm 54

Psalm 54[a]

For the director of music. With stringed instruments. A maskil[b] of David. When the Ziphites(A) had gone to Saul and said, “Is not David hiding among us?”

Save me(B), O God, by your name;(C)
vindicate me by your might.(D)
Hear my prayer, O God;(E)
listen to the words of my mouth.

Arrogant foes are attacking me;(F)
ruthless people(G) are trying to kill me(H)
people without regard for God.[c](I)

Surely God is my help;(J)
the Lord is the one who sustains me.(K)

Let evil recoil(L) on those who slander me;
in your faithfulness(M) destroy them.

I will sacrifice a freewill offering(N) to you;
I will praise(O) your name, Lord, for it is good.(P)
You have delivered me(Q) from all my troubles,
and my eyes have looked in triumph on my foes.(R)

Isaiah 3:1-5:30, 2 Corinthians 11:1-15, Psalms 53:1-6, Proverbs 22:28-29

Today is the 9th day of September. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian. It’s great to be here with you today as we turn the knob and step through the threshold of a shiny, sparkly, new week. And for some reason this seems to happen every seven days. Here we are at the beginning of another week. And this week we’re going to read from the New International Version. And just a heads up, there’s a fly…a fly flying around me and continually landing on my microphone. If all of a sudden you hear a giant smash and crash…that’s just me taking a swipe…though we’ll try to keep that at a minimum. So we’re picking up where we left off yesterday, which is always the custom, and that will take us back into the book of Isaiah that we began yesterday and we’ll read chapter 3 verse 1 through 5:30 today.

Prayer:

Father, we thank you for the gift of your word and as we move into this new week we anticipate all that you will speak to us through your word and we invite your Holy Spirit. Come, Holy Spirit, well up within us, lead us into all truth. Guide us on the steps and decisions that we have before us in this week, center us in your word, help us to recall what your word has spoken into our hearts as we make these decisions and carry these postures and have these conversations that are yet out in front of us. May we represent you in all things and may we do it well because you are leading the way. Come Holy Spirit we pray. In Jesus’ name we ask. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hi family. This is his little Sharif from Canada and I wanted to call and thank everyone who prayed for the family reunion because it was awesome. I was on the waiting list but a spot opened up so I was able to go. And I know many people couldn’t be there. So, I just wanted to share with you what it was like for me. To be honest, I felt really nervous to go, to travel all that way by myself, and also not to know anyone when I got there but even as I was driving into the camp where the reunion was happening a couple ladies waved to me as if they knew me and then as I walked toward the building a lady bounded up to me and shook my hand as if we were long lost friends and by the end of the reunion I felt like I really was among family and I just wish it would have lasted longer. So, I want to thank, specifically Janet from Kansas, Janisa from Florida, Cindy from Seattle for being so wonderful and embracing me so thoroughly. And also, there was a lady who spoke to me during worship, I didn’t catch your name but you told me how the Lord felt about my special times with him and that message was so right on and meant so much to me, I will not forget it. It’s written on my heart. So, thank you so much for that. Charlotte Phillips I’m praying for your grandson Tristin born two months premature. Also, Karen from St. Louis, it was great to meet you. You inspire me and so many others. If I start to name names I’ll forget somebody. So, thank you so much for being so wonderful family. I wish I’d been able to meet more of you but next time. Maybe they’ll make it a little bit longer next time. Anyway, it was great. Thank you to everyone who made it possible. Love you guys more than ever. God bless. Bye for now.

Hello Daily Audio Bible family. I’m so happy to be a first-time caller. I am Grandma Love and I have a significant issue with my dad who is 94 years old and is in hospice. At this point we have petitioned a court to appoint a conservator. His family has not cooperated. So, it’s two years later and they’re just now discovering that all of his property and all of his money was transferred to her daughters. I believe his wife has been __ by her family. They do not recognize their marriage because they come from the Philippines and the Philippines do not recognize a second marriage nor divorce…and she never got a divorce from her first husband. But at this point my dad is in hospice and is unable to speak, unable to walk and is not being visited by anyone except for me. And I reall,y really ask for your prayers that he be comforted and these last few days of his life, that he feel loved and cared for and surrounded by the Holy Spirit of the Lord. And I talked to him and he agrees, he was able to nod yes and no, that he knows that he’s gonna be in heaven soon and with the people that have passed before us. But he is so, so unhappy and so lonely and so distressed at the betrayal, that it has caused him significant problems. They have also placed him in a horrible decision, horrible places…that was horrible to me. And fairly nice when they came around and we were working together pretty well and then they took him into a nursing home and he can’t get out of bed. There’s no room in the nursing home. They’re way too busy to even deal with him…they…they can barely…

Hello Daily Audio family. I am a first-time caller. My name is Isabel, I’m from Australia in Melbourne. I just wanted to thank God for the Hardin family for Brian, Jill, and China, and the family. And also just wanted to thank Blind Tony for his amazing poems. You definitely need to write a book. And also for Victoria Soldier for your prayers. You’re such an amazing prayer warrior. And everybody who is part of this beautiful family. This campfire has honestly blessed me so much and I just want to praise God and thank God for all the DABbers because you are an important part of my life now. You know, just coming up on a year and half now and I’ve enjoyed every single day listening to the Daily Audio Bible. I do have a prayer request, an important request. My children, Priscilla and Joseph, with my first marriage, my ex-husband divorced me 10 years ago. I am now remarried to an amazing Christian man. But my daughter is getting married next month in October, the 27th and her dad is just cutting her off and also my son out of his life and he’s not really, you know, communicating with __ things of God and he’s __ . If you could please pray for him. He’s got a lot of major problems and he’s also been sexually abused that God showed me. If you can please pray for him. But the main important prayer request is you could please pray that he comes to my daughter’s wedding because she is feeling really sad that her dad’s not going to give her away and she wants him to be part of her life but he doesn’t want to. So, if you can please pray for this miracle that God can just do a miracle in this relationship. Thank you, DABbers. May God bless you. I will be calling back again and thank you for all your prayers. God bless you.

Hi. This is Vanessa in Texas and it’s been a while since I’ve called and I’m behind in my listening, but I started catching up again this week and I’d like to ask prayer for my friend Andrew in St. Louis. We’ve been friends for several years but virtually like this community. We’ve never actually met in person but we…we chat at work and have developed this really good friendship. And he…he’s going through a time of…a lot of self-doubt and he suffered a long time from depression. And a year ago he almost attempted suicide and instead of…instead of trying to end his life that night he reached out to me and I was able to…to help them and to talk to him. And so here we are a year later and he’s __ God and going to church and feeling much better. But he’s struggling. He doesn’t know what to do with his life. And, so, he could really use some prayers for guidance on what to do next, where his next steps are. He wants to do better, he wants to live a happy life, a simple life, an uncomplicated one but he just doesn’t know where or what. And he’s willing to do anything. So, yeah, if you guys could just pray for him, that the Lord will point him in a good direction in life and he’ll keep walking on a path with God. That would be awesome. Thank you very much. And I hope you’re all doing well. Have a great day.

Isaiah 3-5

Judgment on Jerusalem and Judah

See now, the Lord,
the Lord Almighty,
is about to take from Jerusalem and Judah
both supply and support:(A)
all supplies of food(B) and all supplies of water,(C)
the hero and the warrior,(D)
the judge and the prophet,
the diviner(E) and the elder,(F)
the captain of fifty(G) and the man of rank,(H)
the counselor, skilled craftsman(I) and clever enchanter.(J)

“I will make mere youths their officials;
children will rule over them.”(K)

People will oppress each other—
man against man, neighbor against neighbor.(L)
The young will rise up against the old,
the nobody against the honored.

A man will seize one of his brothers
in his father’s house, and say,
“You have a cloak, you be our leader;
take charge of this heap of ruins!”
But in that day(M) he will cry out,
“I have no remedy.(N)
I have no food(O) or clothing in my house;
do not make me the leader of the people.”(P)

Jerusalem staggers,
Judah is falling;(Q)
their words(R) and deeds(S) are against the Lord,
defying(T) his glorious presence.
The look on their faces testifies(U) against them;
they parade their sin like Sodom;(V)
they do not hide it.
Woe to them!
They have brought disaster(W) upon themselves.

10 Tell the righteous it will be well(X) with them,
for they will enjoy the fruit of their deeds.(Y)
11 Woe to the wicked!(Z)
Disaster(AA) is upon them!
They will be paid back(AB)
for what their hands have done.(AC)

12 Youths(AD) oppress my people,
women rule over them.
My people, your guides lead you astray;(AE)
they turn you from the path.

13 The Lord takes his place in court;(AF)
he rises to judge(AG) the people.
14 The Lord enters into judgment(AH)
against the elders and leaders of his people:
“It is you who have ruined my vineyard;
the plunder(AI) from the poor(AJ) is in your houses.
15 What do you mean by crushing my people(AK)
and grinding(AL) the faces of the poor?”(AM)
declares the Lord, the Lord Almighty.(AN)

16 The Lord says,
“The women of Zion(AO) are haughty,
walking along with outstretched necks,(AP)
flirting with their eyes,
strutting along with swaying hips,
with ornaments jingling on their ankles.
17 Therefore the Lord will bring sores on the heads of the women of Zion;
the Lord will make their scalps bald.(AQ)

18 In that day(AR) the Lord will snatch away their finery: the bangles and headbands and crescent necklaces,(AS) 19 the earrings and bracelets(AT) and veils,(AU) 20 the headdresses(AV) and anklets and sashes, the perfume bottles and charms, 21 the signet rings and nose rings,(AW) 22 the fine robes and the capes and cloaks,(AX) the purses 23 and mirrors, and the linen garments(AY) and tiaras(AZ) and shawls.

24 Instead of fragrance(BA) there will be a stench;(BB)
instead of a sash,(BC) a rope;
instead of well-dressed hair, baldness;(BD)
instead of fine clothing, sackcloth;(BE)
instead of beauty,(BF) branding.(BG)
25 Your men will fall by the sword,(BH)
your warriors in battle.(BI)
26 The gates(BJ) of Zion will lament and mourn;(BK)
destitute,(BL) she will sit on the ground.(BM)

In that day(BN) seven women
will take hold of one man(BO)
and say, “We will eat our own food(BP)
and provide our own clothes;
only let us be called by your name.
Take away our disgrace!”(BQ)

The Branch of the Lord

In that day(BR) the Branch of the Lord(BS) will be beautiful(BT) and glorious, and the fruit(BU) of the land will be the pride and glory(BV) of the survivors(BW) in Israel. Those who are left in Zion,(BX) who remain(BY) in Jerusalem, will be called holy,(BZ) all who are recorded(CA) among the living in Jerusalem. The Lord will wash away the filth(CB) of the women of Zion;(CC) he will cleanse(CD) the bloodstains(CE) from Jerusalem by a spirit[a] of judgment(CF) and a spirit[b] of fire.(CG) Then the Lord will create(CH) over all of Mount Zion(CI) and over those who assemble there a cloud of smoke by day and a glow of flaming fire by night;(CJ) over everything the glory[c](CK) will be a canopy.(CL) It will be a shelter(CM) and shade from the heat of the day, and a refuge(CN) and hiding place from the storm(CO) and rain.

The Song of the Vineyard

I will sing for the one I love
a song about his vineyard:(CP)
My loved one had a vineyard
on a fertile hillside.
He dug it up and cleared it of stones
and planted it with the choicest vines.(CQ)
He built a watchtower(CR) in it
and cut out a winepress(CS) as well.
Then he looked for a crop of good grapes,
but it yielded only bad fruit.(CT)

“Now you dwellers in Jerusalem and people of Judah,
judge between me and my vineyard.(CU)
What more could have been done for my vineyard
than I have done for it?(CV)
When I looked for good grapes,
why did it yield only bad?(CW)
Now I will tell you
what I am going to do to my vineyard:
I will take away its hedge,
and it will be destroyed;(CX)
I will break down its wall,(CY)
and it will be trampled.(CZ)
I will make it a wasteland,(DA)
neither pruned nor cultivated,
and briers and thorns(DB) will grow there.
I will command the clouds
not to rain(DC) on it.”

The vineyard(DD) of the Lord Almighty
is the nation of Israel,
and the people of Judah
are the vines he delighted in.
And he looked for justice,(DE) but saw bloodshed;
for righteousness,(DF) but heard cries of distress.(DG)

Woes and Judgments

Woe(DH) to you who add house to house
and join field to field(DI)
till no space is left
and you live alone in the land.

The Lord Almighty(DJ) has declared in my hearing:(DK)

“Surely the great houses will become desolate,(DL)
the fine mansions left without occupants.
10 A ten-acre vineyard will produce only a bath[d] of wine;
a homer[e] of seed will yield only an ephah[f] of grain.”(DM)

11 Woe(DN) to those who rise early in the morning
to run after their drinks,
who stay up late at night
till they are inflamed with wine.(DO)
12 They have harps and lyres at their banquets,
pipes(DP) and timbrels(DQ) and wine,
but they have no regard(DR) for the deeds of the Lord,
no respect for the work of his hands.(DS)
13 Therefore my people will go into exile(DT)
for lack of understanding;(DU)
those of high rank(DV) will die of hunger
and the common people will be parched with thirst.(DW)
14 Therefore Death(DX) expands its jaws,
opening wide its mouth;(DY)
into it will descend their nobles and masses
with all their brawlers and revelers.(DZ)
15 So people will be brought low(EA)
and everyone humbled,(EB)
the eyes of the arrogant(EC) humbled.
16 But the Lord Almighty will be exalted(ED) by his justice,(EE)
and the holy God will be proved holy(EF) by his righteous acts.
17 Then sheep will graze as in their own pasture;(EG)
lambs will feed[g] among the ruins of the rich.

18 Woe(EH) to those who draw sin along with cords(EI) of deceit,
and wickedness(EJ) as with cart ropes,
19 to those who say, “Let God hurry;
let him hasten(EK) his work
so we may see it.
The plan of the Holy One(EL) of Israel—
let it approach, let it come into view,
so we may know it.”(EM)

20 Woe(EN) to those who call evil good(EO)
and good evil,(EP)
who put darkness for light
and light for darkness,(EQ)
who put bitter for sweet
and sweet for bitter.(ER)

21 Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes(ES)
and clever in their own sight.

22 Woe to those who are heroes at drinking wine(ET)
and champions at mixing drinks,(EU)
23 who acquit the guilty for a bribe,(EV)
but deny justice(EW) to the innocent.(EX)
24 Therefore, as tongues of fire(EY) lick up straw(EZ)
and as dry grass sinks down in the flames,
so their roots will decay(FA)
and their flowers blow away like dust;(FB)
for they have rejected the law of the Lord Almighty
and spurned the word(FC) of the Holy One(FD) of Israel.
25 Therefore the Lord’s anger(FE) burns against his people;
his hand is raised and he strikes them down.
The mountains shake,(FF)
and the dead bodies(FG) are like refuse(FH) in the streets.(FI)

Yet for all this, his anger is not turned away,(FJ)
his hand is still upraised.(FK)

26 He lifts up a banner(FL) for the distant nations,
he whistles(FM) for those at the ends of the earth.(FN)
Here they come,
swiftly and speedily!
27 Not one of them grows tired(FO) or stumbles,
not one slumbers or sleeps;
not a belt(FP) is loosened at the waist,(FQ)
not a sandal strap is broken.(FR)
28 Their arrows are sharp,(FS)
all their bows(FT) are strung;
their horses’ hooves(FU) seem like flint,
their chariot wheels like a whirlwind.(FV)
29 Their roar is like that of the lion,(FW)
they roar like young lions;
they growl as they seize(FX) their prey
and carry it off with no one to rescue.(FY)
30 In that day(FZ) they will roar over it
like the roaring of the sea.(GA)
And if one looks at the land,
there is only darkness(GB) and distress;(GC)
even the sun will be darkened(GD) by clouds.

2 Corinthians 11:1-15

Paul and the False Apostles

11 I hope you will put up with(A) me in a little foolishness.(B) Yes, please put up with me! I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy. I promised you to one husband,(C) to Christ, so that I might present you(D) as a pure virgin to him. But I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent’s cunning,(E) your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ. For if someone comes to you and preaches a Jesus other than the Jesus we preached,(F) or if you receive a different spirit(G) from the Spirit you received, or a different gospel(H) from the one you accepted, you put up with it(I) easily enough.

I do not think I am in the least inferior to those “super-apostles.”[a](J) I may indeed be untrained as a speaker,(K) but I do have knowledge.(L) We have made this perfectly clear to you in every way. Was it a sin(M) for me to lower myself in order to elevate you by preaching the gospel of God(N) to you free of charge?(O) I robbed other churches by receiving support from them(P) so as to serve you. And when I was with you and needed something, I was not a burden to anyone, for the brothers who came from Macedonia supplied what I needed.(Q) I have kept myself from being a burden to you(R) in any way, and will continue to do so. 10 As surely as the truth of Christ is in me,(S) nobody in the regions of Achaia(T) will stop this boasting(U) of mine. 11 Why? Because I do not love you? God knows(V) I do!(W)

12 And I will keep on doing what I am doing in order to cut the ground from under those who want an opportunity to be considered equal with us in the things they boast about. 13 For such people are false apostles,(X) deceitful(Y) workers, masquerading as apostles of Christ.(Z) 14 And no wonder, for Satan(AA) himself masquerades as an angel of light. 15 It is not surprising, then, if his servants also masquerade as servants of righteousness. Their end will be what their actions deserve.(AB)

Psalm 53

Psalm 53[a](A)

For the director of music. According to mahalath.[b] A maskil[c] of David.

The fool(B) says in his heart,
“There is no God.”(C)
They are corrupt, and their ways are vile;
there is no one who does good.

God looks down from heaven(D)
on all mankind
to see if there are any who understand,(E)
any who seek God.(F)
Everyone has turned away, all have become corrupt;
there is no one who does good,
not even one.(G)

Do all these evildoers know nothing?

They devour my people as though eating bread;
they never call on God.
But there they are, overwhelmed with dread,
where there was nothing to dread.(H)
God scattered the bones(I) of those who attacked you;(J)
you put them to shame,(K) for God despised them.(L)

Oh, that salvation for Israel would come out of Zion!
When God restores his people,
let Jacob rejoice and Israel be glad!

Isaiah 1:1-2:22, 2 Corinthians 10:1-18 , Psalms 52:1-9 , Proverbs 22:26-27

Today is the 8th day of September. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian. It’s great to be here with you as we close down another week and finish our first full week of the month of September. And we’re moving into some new territory. So, we had this period where we went through Job and Ecclesiastes, going into the deeper matters of the heart. And then we came through Song of Solomon, which obviously moved us in another direction. And now we are at the threshold of the book of Isaiah. And we’ll be camping out here for a minute, so let’s consider the territory that we’re moving into. Isaiah is a book of prophecy classified among the Old Testament major prophets, which also includes Jeremiah, Lamentations, Ezekiel and Daniel. So, this distinction of major prophet indicates that there are minor prophets and there are. But they have nothing to do with importance, they have to do more with length and the volume of material. So, Isaiah’s considered a major prophet because it contains 66 chapters, making it one of the longer books of the Bible.

Introduction to the book of Isaiah:

Isaiah’s name means the Lord saves. And he was a very passionate Old Testament prophet. His writings are referred to and quoted throughout the New Testament. In fact, Jesus quoted from Isaiah eight times in the gospels. It was such an important text to Jesus that he recited from Isaiah 61 at the launch of his ministry to declare his purpose, right? The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, for he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor.

So, Isaiah lived in the second half of the 8th century BC. And it seems as if he was part of the upper class or the aristocracy because he had access to royalty. Although he lived in a very tumultuous time, he was able to deliver messages to kings over a long period. So, he wasn’t just a crazed peasant, just kind of coming in unwanted, unkempt from the countryside. Isaiah’s ministry lasted over a long period of time. He prophesied during the reigns of five different kings: Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, Hezekiah, who he was very loyal to. They were very loyal to each other, even though they disagreed, and Manasseh. And then, according to Jewish and Christian tradition, Isaiah was martyred by being sawed in half at the order of King Manasseh. Now that’s a tradition. There’s nothing explicit to this event found in the Bible. But the writer of Hebrews describes the faith of the saints of old by saying, some died by stoning, some were sawed in half and others were killed with the sword. So, that there’s the brief, briefest reference to that tradition. And Isaiah is divided almost evenly in content. The first thirty-nine chapters of the book discuss God’s judgement, which is very sobering and the very territory that we’re about to head into. And then chapters 40 through 66 discuss God’s comfort and restoration, which is very hopeful. Throughout Isaiah, God’s sovereignty and lordship, as well as the fact that his heavenly kingdom is to be established upon this earth, take on major themes. Which brings social justice into the mix, which is also very important to Isaiah. Even though he had access to kings, his heart was for the downtrodden. So, we’re heading into the books of prophecy. And these prophetic books are full of metaphor and full of symbolism, full of allegorical language. Isaiah is no different. We just read the Song of Solomon and when we began that, we mentioned that we can look at this through several different lenses and arrive at different meanings, all worthwhile and godly. So, as we move into this territory, let’s invite the Holy Spirit to lead us to what we need to see. And with that we begin. We’re reading from the Modern English Version this week, which is today. Isaiah 1:1-2:22.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word. We thank You for another week. O Lord, we can certainly declare Your faithfulness each and every day. And as we look back at all of the distance that we’ve covered this year, we can announce Your mercy and declare Your faithfulness every day. And, so, we thank You that as we move through another year, You lead us through Your word. And Your word changes us. It shifts things and we are changing. And we thank You for that. We invite You to come, Holy Spirit. Continue to plant the words in the Scriptures in our lives, leading us into all truth as You’ve promised. Come Jesus, we pray. In Your mighty name we ask. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hi guys. This is Rachel calling from Scotland. I’m phoning to ask you to pray for my family, my immediate family especially. My mom passed away after an accident in 2001 and since then it’s just been my dad, my older sister, called Karen, and myself and my dad’s brother. And that’s all of our immediate family. Over the past 12 years my father’s been going out with a lady and we’ve got on okay with her. There hasn’t been any major problems. Over the last few months they’ve got engaged and she’s moved into the house that mom and dad bought together. Now, when mom died she didn’t leave a will because she died in an accident, so everything happened suddenly. My dad, fairly recently, over the past couple of months, said that…although we hadn’t fallen out and there’s been no problems in the family…that he’s actually selling the house and cut me and my sister out of his will. And he did this because he wants his fiancée to be secure in case anything happens to him. And this has caused such an upset in the family. Apart from myself, nobody’s actually speaking to him anymore and including his brother who he’s been best friends with 75 years. And they’ve never been…had an argument …they’ve never fallen out. Now there’s been so much hurt between them that they’re not welcome in each others house. The only person having communication with both sides is myself and it’s a very difficult thing to do. Please pray that God will work in this situation, that He’ll work his __ out and he’ll bring salvation to all those involved. And next, in the midst of all this distress, that they require…

Hi, my name is Denise and I’m calling from California. I’m asking for prayer in the way of solitude, divine intervention, and peace in my life, and that of my children. I’m going through struggle right now, deep deep struggle. And I know is a spiritual attack in every sense of the word. I am trying so hard to walk the line of righteousness and good but every time I feel like I’m gettin to a place it’s yanked from under me. I would like so much to just serve God, serve the Lord, and serve my fellow man without any incident but for the life of me I can’t make it to higher ground. I hurt so bad and I feel terrible that I have to walk around and put on a charade as though everything is all right when deep down inside…I just don’t know how much more I can take. I just would like for as many followers or prayer warriors out there that hear my voice to pray for me. And pray because I need it so bad. And I appreciate it. Thank you and God bless.

Hello Daily Audio Bible family. This is Butterfly from West Palm Beach. I have been listening and listening and listening, but I never called. So today, driving home I just wanted to say a prayer for all f us. Father, in the name of Jesus God I love You and I thank You. Lord I thank You for this opportunity Father to come and call on Your name for Your holy people Jesus. Lord I ask that You help us to be more like You because You know our struggles God. You know our hearts even before we were even created in our mother’s wombs, God, all of our issues that we’re dealing with, all of life’s troubles and struggles, God I just speak victory, the spirit of victory over each and every one of us God. Known and unknown God You know us. Lord, You know us by our name because God created us Father. Lord I ask right now that You go into every college campus that’s represented in the Daily Audio Bible and keep our children safe Father. Every elementary school, every middle school that is represented by every member in this Daily Audio Bible family, God we need You. Father lift our children up God. I speak to their spirits and say that you are leaders, you are the head and not the tail, above only and not beneath. Father that barren woman on the line the other day, God, do a work in her life God. Father, touch her body. Lord unstop her ears that she may hear from You directly by the Spirit God. Father, I ask in the name of Jesus God that You heal her heart in the name of Jesus God. Lord, we trust Your plans for our lives in the name of Jesus God. We know that our thoughts are not Your thoughts and our ways not Your ways but God we know that all things are working together for our good because we are called according to Your purpose God. Lord I ask that You come…

Hi family this is Mary Jo in St. Louis and I am still on a cloud from the family reunion this weekend. Let me tell you, I’ve been listening for 10 years. I never really hoped to meet any of the people that call and but on Saturday night, I’m having dinner with Annette Allison on my left, Tracy Baker on my right, and Pelham to his right. And let me tell you, these people that call in are as real in person as they are on their phone calls. And it was just the most incredible thing to meet the family, a room full of people that don’t even look familiar but we’re all connected like Brian has said. So, I hope that everyone can go next year but let me tell you for those of you who won’t ever be able to come to a family reunion or go on the Israel trip or come to any of the meet ups or maybe…won’t even call in, you are all part of that family. You are all connected with us even if we don’t meet you this side of heaven. Praying for you all. Love you all. God bless you all in Jesus name.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Saturday September 8, 2018 (NIV)

Isaiah 1-2

The vision of Isaiah the son of Amoz, which he saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah.

The Wickedness of Judah

Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth.
For the Lord has spoken:
I have nourished and brought up children,
and they have rebelled against Me;
the ox knows his owner,
and the donkey his master’s crib,
but Israel does not know;
My people do not consider.

Alas, sinful nation,
a people laden with iniquity,
a brood of evildoers,
children who deal corruptly!
They have forsaken the Lord,
they have provoked the Holy One of Israel to anger,
they are estranged and backward.

Why should you be beaten again,
that you revolt more and more?
The whole head is sick,
and the whole heart faint.
From the sole of the foot even to the head
there is no soundness in it.
Wounds, bruises,
and open sores;
they have not been closed,
nor bandaged, nor soothed with oil.

Your country is desolate,
your cities are burned with fire;
strangers devour your land
in your presence;
and it is desolate, as overthrown by strangers.
The daughter of Zion is left
like a shelter in a vineyard,
like a hut in a field of melons,
like a besieged city.
Unless the Lord of Hosts
had left to us a very small remnant,
we would have been as Sodom;
we would have been like Gomorrah.

10 Hear the word of the Lord,
you rulers of Sodom;
listen to the law of our God,
you people of Gomorrah:
11 For what purpose is the multitude
of your sacrifices to Me? says the Lord.
I am full of the burnt offerings of rams,
and the fat of fed animals.
I do not delight in the blood of bulls,
or of lambs, or of male goats.
12 When you come to appear before Me,
who has required this at your hand,
to trample My courts?
13 Bring no more vain offerings;
incense is an abomination to Me.
New Moons, Sabbaths, and convocations—
I cannot bear with evil assemblies.
14 My soul hates
your New Moons and your appointed feasts;
they are a burden to Me;
I am weary of bearing them.
15 When you reach out your hands,
I will hide My eyes from you;
even when you make many prayers,
I will not hear.

Your hands are full of blood.

16 Wash yourselves, make yourselves clean;
put away the evil from your deeds, from before My eyes.
Cease to do evil,
17 learn to do good; seek justice,
relieve the oppressed;
judge the fatherless,
plead for the widow.

18 Come now, and let us reason together,
says the Lord.
Though your sins be as scarlet,
they shall be as white as snow;
though they be red like crimson,
they shall be as wool.
19 If you are willing and obedient,
you shall eat the good of the land;
20 but if you refuse and rebel,
you shall be devoured with the sword;
for the mouth of the Lord has spoken it.

The Degenerate City

21 How the faithful city
has become a prostitute!
She was full of justice;
righteousness lodged in her,
but now murderers.
22 Your silver has become dross,
your wine mixed with water.
23 Your princes are rebellious
and companions of thieves;
everyone loves a bribe
and follows after rewards.
They do not defend the fatherless,
nor does the cause of the widow come before them.

24 Therefore the Lord, the Lord of Hosts,
the Mighty One of Israel, says:
Ah, I will get relief from My adversaries,
and avenge Myself on My enemies.
25 And I will turn My hand against you,
thoroughly purge away your dross,
and take away all your impurities.
26 I will restore your judges as at the first,
and your counselors as at the beginning.
Afterward you shall be called
the city of righteousness,
a faithful town.

27 Zion shall be redeemed with justice
and her converts with righteousness.
28 But the destruction of the transgressors and sinners shall be together,
and those who forsake the Lord shall be consumed.

29 For they shall be ashamed of the oaks
which you have desired,
and you shall be humiliated for the gardens
that you have chosen.
30 For you shall be as an oak whose leaf fades,
and as a garden that has no water.
31 The strong shall be as tinder,
and his work like a spark;
they will both burn together,
and no one will quench them.

The Mountain of the Lord(A)

The word that Isaiah the son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem.

In the last days,

the mountain of the Lord’s house shall be established
on the top of the mountains,
and shall be exalted above the hills,
and all nations shall flow to it.

Many people shall go and say,

“Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord,
to the house of the God of Jacob,
and He will teach us of His ways,
and we will walk in His paths.”
For out of Zion shall go forth the law,
and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.
He shall judge among the nations,
and shall rebuke many peoples;
and they shall beat their swords into plowshares,
and their spears into pruning hooks;
nation shall not lift up sword against nation,
nor shall they learn war any more.

O house of Jacob, come,
and let us walk in the light of the Lord.

The Day of the Lord

For You have forsaken Your people,
the house of Jacob,
because they are replenished from the east,
and are soothsayers like the Philistines,
and they please themselves with the children of strangers.
Their land also is full of silver and gold,
and there is no end to their treasures;
their land is also full of horses,
and there is no end to their chariots.
Their land also is full of idols;
they worship the work of their own hands,
that which their own fingers have made.
And the common man bows down,
and the great man humbles himself;
therefore, do not forgive them.

10 Enter into the rock,
and hide in the dust
from the fear of the Lord
and from the glory of His majesty.
11 The lofty looks of man shall be humbled,
and the haughtiness of men shall be bowed down,
and the Lord alone shall be exalted in that day.

12 For the day of the Lord of Hosts shall be
upon everything that is proud and lofty,
and upon everything that is lifted up,
and it shall be brought low;
13 and it will be upon all the cedars of Lebanon that are high and lifted up,
and upon all the oaks of Bashan,
14 and upon all the high mountains,
and upon all the hills that are lifted up,
15 and upon all the high towers,
and upon every fenced wall,
16 and upon all the ships of Tarshish,
and upon all pleasant sloops.
17 The loftiness of man shall be humbled,
and the haughtiness of men shall be brought low;
the Lord alone will be exalted in that day;
18 the idols He shall utterly abolish.

19 They shall go into the holes of the rocks,
and into the caves of the earth,
from the fear of the Lord,
and from the glory of His majesty,
when He shall arise to shake the earth mightily.
20 In that day a man shall cast away
his idols of silver and his idols of gold,
which they made for themselves to worship,
to the moles and to the bats,
21 to enter the caverns of the rocks,
and into the clefts of the cliffs,
from the terror of the Lord,
and from the glory of His majesty,
when He arises to shake the earth mightily.

22 Cease regarding man,
whose breath is in his nostrils;
for why should he be esteemed?

2 Corinthians 10

Paul Defends His Ministry

10 Now I, Paul, who am lowly in presence among you but bold toward you while absent, appeal to you by the meekness and gentleness of Christ. I beg you that when I am present, I might not have to be bold with that confidence by which I intend to be bold against some, who think of us as if we walked according to the flesh. For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds, casting down imaginations and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, and being ready to punish all disobedience when your obedience is complete.

Do you look at things from the outward appearance? If any man trusts that he is Christ’s, let him consider again that, as he is Christ’s, even so are we Christ’s. For even if I should boast somewhat more of our authority, which the Lord has given us for edification and not for your destruction, I shall not be ashamed, lest I appear to frighten you by my letters. 10 “For his letters,” they say, “are weighty and powerful, but his bodily presence is weak, and his speech contemptible.” 11 Let such a person consider this: that as we are in word by letters when we are absent, we will also be in deed when we are present.

12 For we dare not count or compare ourselves with those who commend themselves. They who measure themselves by one another and compare themselves with one another are not wise. 13 But we will not boast beyond measure, but within the boundaries which God has appointed us, which reach even you. 14 For we are not overextending ourselves as though we did not reach you, since we have come to you, preaching the gospel of Christ. 15 We are not boasting of things beyond our measure in other men’s labors. But we have hope that when your faith is increased, our region shall be greatly enlarged by you, 16 to preach the gospel in the regions beyond you and not to boast in another man’s accomplishments. 17 But, “Let him who boasts, boast in the Lord.”[a] 18 For it is not he who commends himself who is approved, but he whom the Lord commends.

Psalm 52

Psalm 52

For the Music Director. A Contemplative Maskil. A Psalm of David, when Doeg the Edomite came and told Saul, “David has come to the house of Ahimelek.”

Why do you boast in evil, O mighty man?
The goodness of God endures continually.
Your tongue devises calamities,
like a sharp razor, you worker of treachery.
You love evil more than good,
and lying rather than speaking righteousness. Selah
You love all devouring words,
O you deceitful tongue.

God will likewise break you down forever;
He will snatch you away and pluck you from your home,
and uproot you from the land of the living. Selah
The righteous also will see and fear,
and will laugh in contempt,
“See, this is the man
who did not make God his refuge,
but trusted in the abundance of riches,
and grew strong in his own wickedness.”

But I am like a green olive tree
in the house of God;
I trust in the mercy of God
forever and ever.
I will give thanks to You forever, because You have acted;
and I will wait on Your name,
for it is good before Your saints.

Proverbs 22:26-27

Saying Four

26 Do not be one of those who shakes hands in a pledge,
or of those who use securities for debts;
27 if you have nothing to pay,
why should he take away your bed from under you?

Yesterday we began the Song of Songs or the Song of Solomon and that my wife Jill and I have traditionally read this together. And, so, today we will conclude the Song of Songs by reading chapter 5 verse 1 through 8:14 today.

Prayer:

Father, we thank you for your word. We thank you for the rhythm of it in our lives, step-by-step, day by day as it transforms us. We thank you that your word speaks to every issue of life and every experience and emotion of life. And, so, we greet you Holy Spirit. Come, plant the words read today in our lives, that they might yield the fruit of the Spirit in our hearts, minds, and lives. We ask this in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hi. My name is Risa. I’m from Claremont Florida. This is my first time calling. I’d never think I would do this but this is very important and I need prayer for my sister Harriet. We call her Hen. But as I was at the DAB reunion tonight I got a call saying that she was in the hospital, possible heart trouble. They’re thinking about putting a stent in her tomorrow and I am 13 hours away from my house and it’s a long way to Buffalo New York. But anyways, they’re thinking about if the stent doesn’t work that the she’s going to be open heart surgery. So, my sisters my best friend in the whole world and I just…I really need a lot of prayers and I really thank you. I’m just glad that I have this to reach out to you. And thank you ahead of time for your prayers. But her name…we call her Hen. So, would you if you could please remember her in your prayers. Thank you very much and God bless you all.

Hi DAB family, I pray that everyone made it safely from the family gathering in Tennessee. I am happy to say that Toni in Germany and me had our own family gathering here in Munich and we lifted you all up and I’m just so grateful for this community of believers and family. Esther in Flushing Queens, I love you cheer girl. Thank you for your prayers. Asia, in Chicago, in 13 years there has never been another Asia and I’ve never met another Asia. So, I’m lifting you up my sister in Christ, that God will provide a way. You just stay focused on Him. Sharon, in singing your song Loyalty, This is My Destiny, girl, thank you so much for singing that, It really lifted me up. Will in __ Montana, I’m still praying for you, I love you my brother. Candace in Oregon, our God can do anything. Our God can do anything. Thank you so much for sharing that. Jazz in the Bronx, God is your guidance. He is your guidance and He is standing with you and we are standing with you. Angel in California, your brain surgery, and I know your husband called and right after you. God bless you both. Becky in Orlando, thank you. Welcome back. I have often wondered what happened to you. I had put messages on the family page on Facebook. I’m just so happy you’re back girl and just praying that God will provide all your needs and that your audition interview went well. Paul from Houston, I’m praying for your separation, that God will restore your marriage. Emily __,  your chronic fatigue syndrome, I am praying for you and pray that God will deliver you. Jerry in Duluth, I’m thanking God for your children’s marriages, that they will be restored and strength as a father and father-in-law. Brian and Jill and everyone behind the scenes, I love you. Thank you family. Keep me lifted in your prayers. Cheers. Asia and Munich.

Hey Daily Audio Bible it’s To Be a Blessing in California. Happy Labor Day. Come unto thee all you who labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest. That’s why I’m calling, to ask you to pray for my sister, that God would give her rest, that she would go to Him, that she would learn that He is trustworthy, and that while father on earth betrayed her and so made a ways and treated her poorly in so many ways, ways that she’s unable to get beyond, she’s decided that forgiveness is not a possibility. I know a God who is able to do exceedingly, abundantly above all that we could ask of Him. And I’m just asking that God would touch her heart and inviting you to pray with me in agreement so that she would learn about the freedom that comes from Jesus. Thank you so much family for doing this for me. All I can think about is what a life she would have if she would just let Jesus take her heart and to give her the gift of forgiveness so that she could forgive our father and be free. And if that is the case for anyone here, I am praying for you as well because there is nothing like living in the past, a past that will only shackle you and limit your capacity. God bless you for all that you do for one another, for us. God bless you in your life this week. Take good care family. To Be a Blessing in California. Bye bye.

Happy Labor Day Daily Bible family. This is Prosperous Pam from the San Francisco Bay area. It is Labor Day, Monday and I heard today’s message and it was just for me and I just needed to…I’m talking casually like it’s not a big deal but it’s probably the most powerful message I’ve heard since I’ve been going through what I’ve been going through the past year and a half, two years. And that is…Brian…when you were sharing the Scripture about…you know…about just being ahead of ourselves and not being in the present. And…we hear that a lot…I hear that a lot, but God just spoke to me so profoundly when I heard that message. So, I just want…of course I have a call coming in, right? So, I can’t focus on one thing…but Lord I just pray that the family, Daily Audio Bible family, would you please keep me lifted in prayer, that I am healed from that anxiety of looking always ahead, focusing on ahead. And time just goes on and on and on. You know, and I’m 51 years old and my life has always been thinking ahead. And that’s the message today…just was profound…like…it was so amazing. So, please just keep me lifted because that is one of my biggest life struggles if not the biggest life struggle. And it’s not being in the present moment. So, I just thank you Brian. I thank you for your family. I thank you Daily Audio Bible family and just keep me lifted in prayer. This is Prosperous Pam from the San Francisco Bay area. I’ve never been out of work and it’s going on almost 2 years. It just makes no sense but I know God is going to get the glory out of this. And I thank Him because I’m not even…I used to be private and ashamed…I’m not. I know he’s gonna get the glory out of this. But…God bless you family and thank you so much for Brian what you do…your family…

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Friday September 7, 2018 (NIV)

Song of Songs 5-8

The Man

I come to my garden, my sister, my bride;
I gather my myrrh with my spice;
I eat my honeycomb with my honey;
I drink my wine with my milk.

Friends of the Man

Eat, friends!
Drink, and be drunk with love!

The Woman

I slept, but my heart was awake.
A sound! My beloved is knocking. “Open to me, my sister, and my love,
my dove, my perfect one;
for my head is wet with dew,
my locks with the drops of the night.”
I had taken off my garment;
how could I put it on again?
I had bathed my feet;
how could I soil them?
My beloved put his hand by the latch,
and my heart yearned for him.
I rose up to open to my beloved,
and my hands dripped with myrrh,
my fingers with liquid myrrh
on the handles of the bolt.
I opened to my beloved,
but my beloved had turned and was gone.
My soul failed me when he spoke.
I sought him, but found him not;
I called him, but he gave no answer.
The watchmen found me
as they went about the city;
they struck me, they wounded me;
they took away my mantle,
those watchmen of the walls.
I charge you, O daughters of Jerusalem,
if you find my beloved,
that you tell him I am faint with love.

Friends of the Woman

What is your beloved more than another beloved,
O fairest among women?
What is your beloved more than another beloved,
that you so charge us?

The Woman

10 My beloved is white and ruddy,
distinguished among ten thousand.
11 His head is the finest gold;
his locks are wavy,
black as a raven.
12 His eyes are like doves
beside rivers of water,
bathed in milk,
fitly set.
13 His cheeks are like beds of spices,
mounds of scented herbs.
His lips are lilies,
dripping liquid myrrh.
14 His arms are rods of gold,
set with jewels.
His body is bright ivory,
inlaid with sapphires.
15 His legs are alabaster columns,
set on bases of gold.
His appearance is like Lebanon,
choice as the cedars.
16 His mouth is most sweet,
and he is altogether desirable.
This is my beloved and this is my friend,
O daughters of Jerusalem.

Friends of the Woman

Where has your beloved gone,
O fairest among women?
Where has your beloved turned aside,
that we may seek him with you?

The Woman

My beloved has gone down to his garden,
to the beds of spices,
to feed his flock in the gardens,
and to gather lilies.
I am my beloved’s and my beloved is mine;
he feeds his flock among the lilies.

The Man

You are beautiful as Tirzah, my love,
comely as Jerusalem,
awesome as an army with banners!
Turn your eyes away from me,
for they overwhelm me!
Your hair is like a flock of goats
streaming down from Gilead.
your teeth are like a flock of ewes
that have come up from the washing;
all of them bear twins; not one among them has lost its young;
your cheeks are like halves
of a pomegranate behind your veil.
There are sixty queens
and eighty concubines,
and virgins without number.
My dove, my perfect one, is the only one,
the only one of her mother,
choice to her who bore her.
The maidens saw her and called her blessed;
the queens and concubines also, and they praised her.

10 Who is this who looks forth like the dawn,
fair as the moon, radiant as the sun,
awesome as an army with banners?

11 I went down to the nut orchard
to look at the blossoms of the valley,
to see whether the vines had budded,
whether the pomegranates were in bloom.
12 Before I was aware, my soul set me in a chariot beside my prince.

Friends of the Woman

13 Return, return, O Shulammite![a]
Return, return, that we may look upon you.

The Man

Why should you look upon the Shulammite,
as upon a dance before two armies?[b]

How beautiful are your feet in sandals,
O prince’s daughter!
The curves of your thighs are like jewels,
the work of a master hand.
Your navel is a round bowl
that never lacks mixed wine.
Your belly is a heap of wheat,
encircled with lilies.
Your two breasts are like two fawns,
twins of a gazelle.
Your neck is like an ivory tower,
your eyes pools in Heshbon,
by the gate of Bath Rabbim.
Your nose is like a tower of Lebanon,
overlooking Damascus.
Your head crowns like Carmel,
and your flowing hair is like purple;
a king is held captive in the tresses.
How fair and pleasant you are,
O loved one, with all your delights!
Your stature is like a palm tree,
and your breasts are like its clusters.
I say I will climb the palm tree
and take hold of its branches.
Oh, may your breasts be like clusters of the vine,
and the scent of your breath like apples,
and your mouth like the best wine.
It goes down smoothly for my beloved,
gliding over lips and teeth.

The Woman

10 I am my beloved’s,
and his desire is for me.
11 Come, my beloved, let us go forth into the fields,
and lodge in the villages;
12 let us go out early to the vineyards,
and see whether the vines have budded,
whether the grape blossoms have opened
and the pomegranates are in bloom.
There I will give you my love.
13 The mandrakes give forth fragrance,
and at our doors are all choice fruits,
new as well as old,
which I have laid up for you, my beloved.

Oh, that you were like a brother to me,
who nursed at my mother’s breasts!
If I found you outside,
I would kiss you,
and no one would despise me.
I would lead you and bring you
into the house of my mother,
she who used to instruct me.
I would give you spiced wine to drink,
the juice of my pomegranates.
His left hand is under my head,
and his right arm embraces me!
I charge you, O daughters of Jerusalem,
do not stir up or awaken love
until it pleases.

Friends of the Woman

Who is that coming up from the wilderness,
leaning upon her beloved?

The Woman

Under the apple tree I awakened you.
There your mother was in labor with you;
there she who bore you was in labor.
Set me as a seal upon your heart,
as a seal upon your arm;
for love is strong as death,
passion fierce as the grave.
Its fires of desire are as ardent flames,
a most intense flame.
Many waters cannot quench love,
neither can floods drown it.
If a man offered for love
all the wealth of his house,
it would be utterly condemned.

Brothers of the Woman

We have a little sister,
and she has no breasts.
What will we do for our sister
on the day when she is spoken for?
If she is a wall,
we will build upon her a battlement of silver;
but if she is a door,
we will enclose her with boards of cedar.

The Woman

10 I was a wall,
and my breasts were like towers;
then I was in his eyes
as one who finds peace.
11 Solomon had a vineyard at Baal Hamon;
he leased the vineyard to keepers;
each man was to bring for its fruit a thousand pieces of silver.
12 My vineyard, my very own, is before me;
you, O Solomon, may have the thousand,
and the keepers of the fruit two hundred.

The Man

13 O you who dwell in the gardens,
my companions listen for your voice;
let me hear it!

The Woman

14 Make haste, my beloved,
and be like a gazelle or a young stag
on the mountains of spices!

2 Corinthians 9

The Offering for the Saints

It is redundant for me to write to you concerning the ministry to the saints. I know your willingness, for which I boast of you to those in Macedonia, that Achaia was ready a year ago, and your zeal has stirred up most of them. Yet I have sent the brothers, lest our boasting of you might be in vain in this case, that, as I said, you may be ready; and lest if any Macedonians come with me and find you unprepared, we (not to mention you) should be ashamed of this confident boasting. Therefore I thought it necessary to exhort the brothers to go ahead to you and arrange beforehand your bountiful gift you previously promised, that it might be prepared as a gift, not as a matter of greed.

But this I say: He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Let every man give according to the purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or out of necessity, for God loves a cheerful giver. God is able to make all grace abound toward you, so that you, always having enough of everything, may abound to every good work. As it is written:

“He has dispersed abroad, He has given to the poor;
His righteousness remains forever.”[a]

10 Now He who supplies seed to the sower and supplies bread for your food will also multiply your seed sown and increase the fruits of your righteousness. 11 So you will be enriched in everything to all bountifulness, which makes us give thanks to God.

12 For the administration of this service not only supplies the need of the saints, but is abundant also through many thanksgivings to God. 13 Meanwhile, through the performance of this ministry, they glorify God for the profession of your faith in the gospel of Christ and for your liberal sharing with them and with all others. 14 And in their prayer for you, they long for you because of the surpassing grace of God in you. 15 Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift.

Psalm 51

Psalm 51

For the Music Director. A Psalm of David, when Nathan the Prophet came to him, after he had gone in to Bathsheba.

Have mercy on me, O God,
according to Your lovingkindness;
according to the abundance of Your compassion,
blot out my transgressions.
Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity,
and cleanse me from my sin.

For I acknowledge my transgressions,
and my sin is ever before me.
Against You, You only, have I sinned,
and done this evil in Your sight,
so that You are justified when You speak,
and You are blameless when You judge.
I was brought forth in iniquity,
and in sin my mother conceived me.
You desire truth in the inward parts,
and in the hidden part You make me to know wisdom.

Purify me with hyssop, and I will be clean;
wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.
Make me to hear joy and gladness,
that the bones that You have broken may rejoice.
Hide Your face from my sins,
and blot out all my iniquities.

10 Create in me a clean heart, O God,
and renew a right spirit within me.
11 Do not cast me away from Your presence,
and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me.
12 Restore to me the joy of Your salvation,
and uphold me with Your willing spirit.

13 Then I will teach transgressors Your ways,
and sinners will return to You.
14 Deliver me from blood guiltiness, O God,
God of my salvation,
and my tongue will sing aloud of Your righteousness.
15 O Lord, open my lips,
and my mouth will declare Your praise.
16 For You do not desire sacrifice, or I would give it;
You do not delight in burnt offering.
17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit;
a broken and a contrite heart,
O God, You will not despise.

18 Do good to Zion in Your good pleasure;
build the walls of Jerusalem.
19 Then You will be pleased with the sacrifices of righteousness,
with burnt offering and whole burnt offering;
then they will offer young bulls on Your altar.

Proverbs 22:24-25

Saying Three

24 Make no friendship with an angry man,
and with a furious man you will not go,
25 lest you learn his ways
and get a snare to your soul.

Song 1:1-4:16 , 2 Corinthians 8:16-24 , Psalms 50:1-23 , Proverbs 22:22-23

Today is the 6th day of September. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian. It’s great to be here with you. Hard to believe we’re like almost a week already into September, but we are and it wouldn’t be right to go through this day without taking the next step forward. So, that’s what we’ll do. We’re reading from the Modern English version.

Introduction to the book of the Song of Solomon:

We’ve come to a special point in the year, a point at which my wife joins me in a reading and that is the Song of Solomon. So, today and tomorrow we’ll be reading at the Song of Songs, which is a radical departure from the territory we’ve just completed in Job and Ecclesiastes and all that we’ve been considering there. And if it is the song of all songs, then human sexuality is indeed a celebrated part of the biblical narrative but it has many layers. It’s short, but it’s potently beautiful, a beautiful book of poetry considered to be Old Testament wisdom literature. But like I said, it has many layers. For millennia the correct way to interpret this lovely but rather graphic poem has been debated. So if we take the poem literally, from a literal perspective, it’s the story of the passionate consummation of love between a man and woman who are utterly lost in one another. And Song of Solomon stands on its own as a witness to marital love and the bliss of a passionate relationship. The ancient Jewish tradition looks at the poem allegorically. I mean, it’s poetry after all. And, so, from this perspective, the story being told reveals God’s passionate love for his children, the Jewish people. And this view is completely supportable in other areas of Scripture both in the old and the new Testaments. And then in the Christian tradition, the book is an allegorical look at Christ’s passionate love for his church and a foreshadowing of his deep desire for his bride. But we don’t have to just pick one. I mean, in this case, all three of these can be true. And as we approach the song of songs we have a number of lenses that we can view it through. And so,  let’s invite God into how we hear it. But no matter how we approach the Song of Solomon, we’ll find a short, meaningful portion of Scripture because it does speak on these different levels into our hearts. So, let’s drink deep of the beautiful and eloquent poetry of the song of Solomon. Today we’ll read chapter 1 verse 1 through 4:16.

Prayer:

Father, we thank you for your word. We thank you for bringing us into this month, almost a week now. And we continue this journey, step by step, day by day, and we see how quickly it goes and how deeply we have gotten into your word. And, so, we invite You Holy Spirit. Come, plant the words that we’ve read in our lives today as they touch us on so many different levels. We pray this Father in the name of Jesus, our beloved Savior. Amen.

Ecclesiastes 10:1-12:14 , 2 Corinthians 8:1-15 , Psalms 49:1-20 , Proverbs 22:20-21

Today is the 5th day of Aug…of September. (Brian laughs). Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian. It’s great to be here with you. I get a little confused every time we switch to a new month it seems. But I doubt I’m the only one. It’s September 5th and this is the Daily Audio Bible and we are around the global campfire and we’ve come to take the next step forward in our journey through the Scriptures. Which leads us back into the book of Ecclesiastes. We’re reading from the Modern English Version this week. Ecclesiastes 10, 11 and 12 today.

Commentary:

Okay. So we concluded the book of Ecclesiastes and, I mean, Ecclesiastes at first blush, right? At first glance, it can seem full of pessimism and cynicism. So it’s helpful to look at what Solomon wrote from an apophatic or subtractive perspective. Solomon looked back over his life with all that he had pursued, all of his challenges, the injustices he had seen, the pleasures he had experienced. And what he found was mostly useless activity. He’d applied all of his energy in the pursuits of beauty and wisdom. He searched far and wide for answers to unanswerable questions. Still, he couldn’t find what he was looking for. So he took a sobering look at it all and began to subtract away from life all that he found meaningless, coming to the conclusion that without a fundamental awareness of a sovereign God, nothing else makes any sense. Everything is like chasing the wind. So, what can we take away from this? What can we learn from this man Solomon who had done it all and then had the wherewithal to step back and subtract away from life all that he found meaningless. He gave us those conclusions. He’s like, this is the whole story. This is the conclusion. Fear God and obey his commands, for that’s what everyone must do. And God will judge everything we do, including all of our secret things, whether they’re good or bad. That’s how the book of Ecclesiastes ends. That’s the final conclusion. And the conclusion Solomon came to in Ecclesiastes is essentially the same conclusion that the bible comes to, right? Give your heart in surrender and reverence to God. Offer yourself in faithful and loyal worship and relationship. Honor God. Do what he says to do. This is what everyone is supposed to do. And this is the only way we’ll find meaning. So let’s sit with this conclusion. This is coming from someone who would know, someone who’s done it all. And fundamentally the conclusion, the foundation of what Solomon is saying is that we must fear God and obey him. And how do we even know if we’re doing that? We’ll have to watch ourselves. We have to learn to watch ourselves. We have to be able to slow down enough to ask, am I worshiping God in this? If I name what I’m trying to do, can I find God in it? If I subtract everything else away, like my motives. If I pull away everything, can I find God in it? Am I worshiping God and keeping his commandments? Because if Solomon, the great and wise king, and then the Bible, came to this conclusion, then we’re not gonna find any other kind of meaning and other kind of way. And so there’s plenty to think about there. And now that we’ve reached the of Ecclesiastes, we should notice something beautiful that the Bible’s given us through Job and Ecclesiastes. Some time to grapple with hard questions, to let them be said out loud to things that won’t have tidy answers, unless we believe in the goodness and sovereignty of God. The topics, suffering and purpose, meaninglessness, that can be unsettling territory. But the Bible doesn’t shy away at all. It just spent a generous amount of time delving into that because we need to. We need to grapple with the ways that we’re trying to find meaning and we need to challenge what we think that we know.

Prayer:

And so, Father, we invite You into that. That we might fear You and obey Your commands. And we understand this is not because You’re tyrannical or insecure. It’s because this is the only way life was ever designed to work. This is the only way it ever will. So come Holy Spirit. We open ourselves to You and Your guidance and Your truth that we might fear You and obey Your commands. Come Holy Spirit we pray. In Jesus name. Amen.
