Isaiah 22-24

A Pronouncement against Jerusalem

22 A pronouncement(A) concerning the Valley of Vision:(B)

What’s the matter with you?
Why have all of you gone up to the rooftops?(C)
The noisy city, the jubilant town,(D)
is filled with celebration.
Your dead did not die by the sword;
they were not killed in battle.
All your rulers have fled together,
captured without a bow.
All your fugitives were captured together;
they had fled far away.
Therefore I said,
“Look away from me! Let me weep bitterly!(E)
Do not try to comfort me
about the destruction of my dear[a] people.”
For the Lord God of Armies
had a day of tumult, trampling, and confusion(F)
in the Valley of Vision—
people shouting[b] and crying to the mountains;
Elam took up a quiver
with chariots and horsemen,[c]
and Kir(G) uncovered the shield.
Your best valleys were full of chariots,
and horsemen were positioned at the city gates.
He removed the defenses of Judah.

On that day you looked to the weapons in the House of the Forest.(H) You saw that there were many breaches in the walls of the city of David.(I) You collected water from the lower pool.(J) 10 You counted the houses of Jerusalem so that you could tear them down to fortify the wall. 11 You made a reservoir between the walls(K) for the water of the ancient pool,(L) but you did not look to the one who made it, or consider the one who created it long ago.

12 On that day the Lord God of Armies
called for weeping,(M) for wailing, for shaven heads,
and for the wearing of sackcloth.
13 But look: joy and gladness,
butchering of cattle, slaughtering of sheep and goats,
eating of meat, and drinking of wine—
“Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die!” (N)
14 The Lord of Armies has directly revealed to me:(O)
“This iniquity will not be wiped out for you people as long as you live.”[d](P)
The Lord God of Armies has spoken.

A Pronouncement against Shebna

15 The Lord God of Armies said: “Go to Shebna,(Q) that steward who is in charge of the palace, and say to him: 16 What are you doing here? Who authorized you to carve out a tomb for yourself here, carving your tomb on the height and cutting a resting place for yourself out of rock?(R) 17 Look, you strong man! The Lord is about to shake you violently. He will take hold of you, 18 wind you up into a ball, and sling you into a wide land.[e] There you will die, and there your glorious chariots will be—a disgrace to the house of your lord. 19 I will remove you from your office; you will be ousted from your position.

20 “On that day I will call for my servant, Eliakim son of Hilkiah.(S) 21 I will clothe him with your robe and tie your sash around him. I will hand your authority over to him, and he will be like a father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem and to the house of Judah.(T) 22 I will place the key(U) of the house of David on his shoulder; what he opens, no one can close; what he closes, no one can open.(V) 23 I will drive him, like a peg, into a firm place. He will be a throne of honor for his father’s family. 24 They will hang on him all the glory of his father’s family: the descendants and the offshoots—all the small vessels, from bowls to every kind of jar. 25 On that day”—the declaration of the Lord of Armies—“the peg that was driven into a firm place will give way, be cut off, and fall, and the load on it will be destroyed.” Indeed, the Lord has spoken.

A Pronouncement against Tyre

23 A pronouncement(W) concerning Tyre:(X)

Wail, ships of Tarshish,(Y)
for your haven has been destroyed.
Word has reached them from the land of Cyprus.[f](Z)
Mourn, inhabitants of the coastland,
you merchants of Sidon;(AA)
your agents have crossed the sea[g]
over deep water.
Tyre’s revenue was the grain from Shihor—
the harvest of the Nile.
She was the merchant among the nations.(AB)
Be ashamed, Sidon, the stronghold of the sea,
for the sea has spoken:
“I have not been in labor or given birth.
I have not raised young men
or brought up young women.”
When the news reaches Egypt,
they will be in anguish over the news about Tyre.(AC)
Cross over to Tarshish;
wail, inhabitants of the coastland!
Is this your jubilant city,
whose origin was in ancient times,
whose feet have taken her
to reside far away?
Who planned this against Tyre,
the bestower of crowns,
whose traders are princes,
whose merchants are the honored ones of the earth?
The Lord of Armies planned it,
to desecrate all its glorious beauty,
to disgrace all the honored ones of the earth.
10 Overflow[h] your land like the Nile, daughter of Tarshish;
there is no longer anything to restrain you.[i]
11 He stretched out his hand over the sea;(AD)
he made kingdoms tremble.
The Lord has commanded
that the Canaanite fortresses be destroyed.
12 He said,
“You will not celebrate anymore,
ravished young woman, daughter of Sidon.
Get up and cross over to Cyprus(AE)
even there you will have no rest!”
13 Look at the land of the Chaldeans—
a people who no longer exist.
Assyria destined it for desert creatures.
They set up their siege towers
and stripped its palaces.
They made it a ruin.
14 Wail, ships of Tarshish,
because your fortress is destroyed!

15 On that day Tyre will be forgotten for seventy years—the life span of one king. At the end of seventy years, what the song says about the prostitute will happen to Tyre:

16 Pick up your lyre,
stroll through the city,
you forgotten prostitute.
Play skillfully,
sing many a song
so that you will be remembered.

17 And at the end of the seventy years,(AF) the Lord will restore Tyre(AG) and she will go back into business, prostituting herself with all the kingdoms of the world throughout the earth. 18 But her profits and wages will be dedicated to the Lord. They will not be stored or saved, for her profit will go to those who live in the Lord’s presence, to provide them with ample food and sacred clothing.

The Earth Judged

24 Look, the Lord is stripping the earth bare
and making it desolate.
He will twist its surface and scatter its inhabitants:
people and priest alike,
servant and master,
female servant and mistress,
buyer and seller,
lender and borrower,
creditor and debtor.
The earth will be stripped completely bare
and will be totally plundered,
for the Lord has spoken this message.(AH)
The earth mourns and withers;
the world wastes away and withers;
the exalted people of the earth waste away.
The earth is polluted by its inhabitants,(AI)
for they have transgressed teachings,
overstepped decrees,
and broken the permanent covenant.(AJ)
Therefore a curse has consumed the earth,(AK)
and its inhabitants have become guilty;
the earth’s inhabitants have been burned,
and only a few survive.
The new wine mourns;(AL)
the vine withers.
All the carousers now groan.
The joyful tambourines(AM) have ceased.
The noise of the jubilant has stopped.
The joyful lyre has ceased.
They no longer sing and drink wine;
beer is bitter to those who drink it.
10 The city of chaos is shattered;(AN)
every house is closed to entry.(AO)
11 In the streets they cry[j] for wine.
All joy grows dark;
earth’s rejoicing goes into exile.
12 Only desolation remains in the city;
its gate has collapsed in ruins.
13 For this is how it will be on earth
among the nations:
like a harvested olive tree,
like a gleaning after a grape harvest.(AP)
14 They raise their voices, they sing out;
they proclaim in the west
the majesty of the Lord.
15 Therefore, in the east honor the Lord!
In the coasts and islands of the west
honor the name of the Lord,
the God of Israel.
16 From the ends of the earth we hear songs:
The Splendor of the Righteous One.(AQ)
But I said, “I waste away! I waste away![k]
Woe is me.”
The treacherous act treacherously;
the treacherous deal very treacherously.(AR)

17 Panic, pit, and trap await you(AS)
who dwell on the earth.(AT)
18 Whoever flees at the sound of panic
will fall into a pit,
and whoever escapes from the pit
will be caught in a trap.
For the windows on high are opened,(AU)
and the foundations of the earth are shaken.(AV)
19 The earth is completely devastated;
the earth is split open;
the earth is violently shaken.
20 The earth staggers like a drunkard(AW)
and sways like a hut.
Earth’s rebellion weighs it down,
and it falls, never to rise again.

21 On that day(AX) the Lord will punish
the army of the heights in the heights
and the kings of the ground on the ground.
22 They will be gathered together
like prisoners in a pit.(AY)
They will be confined to a dungeon;(AZ)
after many days they will be punished.
23 The moon will be put to shame
and the sun disgraced,
because the Lord of Armies will reign as king
on Mount Zion in Jerusalem,
and he will display his glory
in the presence of his elders.(BA)

Galatians 2:17-3:9

17 But if we ourselves are also found to be “sinners” while seeking to be justified by Christ,(A) is Christ then a promoter[a](B) of sin? Absolutely not!(C) 18 If I rebuild(D) those things that I tore down, I show myself to be a lawbreaker.(E) 19 For through the law I died to the law,(F) so that I might live for God.(G) 20 I have been crucified with Christ, and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me.(H) The life I now live in the body,[b] I live by faith in the Son of God,(I) who loved(J) me(K) and gave himself(L) for me.(M) 21 I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness comes through the law,(N) then Christ died(O) for nothing.

Justification through Faith

You foolish(P) Galatians! Who has cast a spell on you,[c] before whose eyes Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed[d] as crucified?(Q) I only want to learn this from you: Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law or by believing what you heard?[e] Are you so foolish? After beginning by the Spirit, are you now finishing by the flesh? Did you experience[f](R) so much for nothing—if in fact it was for nothing? So then, does God give you the Spirit and work miracles(S) among you by your doing the works of the law? Or is it by believing what you heard— just like Abraham who believed God,(T) and it was credited to him for righteousness?[g](U)

You know, then, that those who have faith, these are Abraham’s sons.(V) Now the Scripture saw in advance that God would justify the Gentiles by faith and proclaimed the gospel ahead of time to Abraham,(W) saying, All the nations[h]will be blessed through you.[i](X) Consequently those who have faith are blessed with Abraham,(Y) who had faith.[j]

Psalm 60

Prayer in Difficult Times

For the choir director: according to “The Lily of Testimony.”(A) A Miktam of David for teaching. When he fought with Aram-naharaim and Aram-zobah, and Joab returned and struck Edom in Salt Valley, killing twelve thousand.(B)

God, you have rejected us;
you have broken us down;
you have been angry. Restore us![a](C)
You have shaken the land and split it open.
Heal its fissures, for it shudders.(D)
You have made your people suffer hardship;
you have given us wine to drink
that made us stagger.(E)
You have given a signal flag to those who fear you,
so that they can flee before the archers.[b](F)Selah
Save with your right hand, and answer me,
so that those you love may be rescued.(G)

God has spoken in his sanctuary:[c]
“I will celebrate!
I will divide up Shechem.(H)
I will apportion the Valley of Succoth.(I)
Gilead is mine, Manasseh is mine,
and Ephraim is my helmet;(J)
Judah is my scepter.(K)
Moab is my washbasin.(L)
I throw my sandal on Edom;(M)
I shout in triumph over Philistia.”(N)

Who will bring me to the fortified city?
Who will lead me to Edom?(O)
10 God, haven’t you rejected us?
God, you do not march out with our armies.(P)
11 Give us aid against the foe,
for human help is worthless.(Q)

he will trample our foes.(S)

Isaiah 19-21

A Prophecy Against Egypt

19 A prophecy(A) against Egypt:(B)

See, the Lord rides on a swift cloud(C)
and is coming to Egypt.
The idols of Egypt tremble before him,
and the hearts of the Egyptians melt(D) with fear.

“I will stir up Egyptian against Egyptian—
brother will fight against brother,(E)
neighbor against neighbor,
city against city,
kingdom against kingdom.(F)
The Egyptians will lose heart,(G)
and I will bring their plans(H) to nothing;(I)
they will consult the idols and the spirits of the dead,
the mediums and the spiritists.(J)
I will hand the Egyptians over
to the power of a cruel master,
and a fierce king(K) will rule over them,”
declares the Lord, the Lord Almighty.

The waters of the river will dry up,(L)
and the riverbed will be parched and dry.(M)
The canals will stink;(N)
the streams of Egypt will dwindle and dry up.(O)
The reeds(P) and rushes will wither,(Q)
also the plants(R) along the Nile,
at the mouth of the river.
Every sown field(S) along the Nile
will become parched, will blow away and be no more.(T)
The fishermen(U) will groan and lament,
all who cast hooks(V) into the Nile;
those who throw nets on the water
will pine away.
Those who work with combed flax(W) will despair,
the weavers of fine linen(X) will lose hope.
10 The workers in cloth will be dejected,
and all the wage earners will be sick at heart.

11 The officials of Zoan(Y) are nothing but fools;
the wise counselors(Z) of Pharaoh give senseless advice.(AA)
How can you say to Pharaoh,
“I am one of the wise men,(AB)
a disciple of the ancient kings”?

12 Where are your wise men(AC) now?
Let them show you and make known
what the Lord Almighty
has planned(AD) against Egypt.
13 The officials of Zoan(AE) have become fools,
the leaders of Memphis(AF) are deceived;
the cornerstones(AG) of her peoples
have led Egypt astray.
14 The Lord has poured into them
a spirit of dizziness;(AH)
they make Egypt stagger in all that she does,
as a drunkard staggers(AI) around in his vomit.
15 There is nothing Egypt can do—
head or tail, palm branch or reed.(AJ)

16 In that day(AK) the Egyptians will become weaklings.(AL) They will shudder with fear(AM) at the uplifted hand(AN) that the Lord Almighty raises against them. 17 And the land of Judah will bring terror to the Egyptians; everyone to whom Judah is mentioned will be terrified,(AO) because of what the Lord Almighty is planning(AP) against them.

18 In that day(AQ) five cities(AR) in Egypt will speak the language of Canaan and swear allegiance(AS) to the Lord Almighty. One of them will be called the City of the Sun.[a](AT)

19 In that day(AU) there will be an altar(AV) to the Lord in the heart of Egypt,(AW) and a monument(AX) to the Lord at its border. 20 It will be a sign and witness(AY) to the Lord Almighty in the land of Egypt. When they cry out to the Lord because of their oppressors, he will send them a savior(AZ) and defender, and he will rescue(BA) them. 21 So the Lord will make himself known to the Egyptians, and in that day they will acknowledge(BB) the Lord. They will worship(BC) with sacrifices and grain offerings; they will make vows to the Lord and keep them.(BD) 22 The Lord will strike(BE) Egypt with a plague;(BF) he will strike them and heal them. They will turn(BG) to the Lord, and he will respond to their pleas and heal(BH) them.

23 In that day(BI) there will be a highway(BJ) from Egypt to Assyria.(BK) The Assyrians will go to Egypt and the Egyptians to Assyria. The Egyptians and Assyrians will worship(BL) together. 24 In that day(BM) Israel will be the third, along with Egypt and Assyria,(BN) a blessing[b](BO) on the earth. 25 The Lord Almighty will bless(BP) them, saying, “Blessed be Egypt my people,(BQ) Assyria my handiwork,(BR) and Israel my inheritance.(BS)

A Prophecy Against Egypt and Cush

20 In the year that the supreme commander,(BT) sent by Sargon king of Assyria, came to Ashdod(BU) and attacked and captured it— at that time the Lord spoke through Isaiah son of Amoz.(BV) He said to him, “Take off the sackcloth(BW) from your body and the sandals(BX) from your feet.” And he did so, going around stripped(BY) and barefoot.(BZ)

Then the Lord said, “Just as my servant(CA) Isaiah has gone stripped and barefoot for three years,(CB) as a sign(CC) and portent(CD) against Egypt(CE) and Cush,[c](CF) so the king(CG) of Assyria will lead away stripped(CH) and barefoot the Egyptian captives(CI) and Cushite(CJ) exiles, young and old, with buttocks bared(CK)—to Egypt’s shame.(CL) Those who trusted(CM) in Cush(CN) and boasted in Egypt(CO) will be dismayed and put to shame.(CP) In that day(CQ) the people who live on this coast will say, ‘See what has happened(CR) to those we relied on,(CS) those we fled to for help(CT) and deliverance from the king of Assyria! How then can we escape?(CU)’”

A Prophecy Against Babylon

21 A prophecy(CV) against the Desert(CW) by the Sea:

Like whirlwinds(CX) sweeping through the southland,(CY)
an invader comes from the desert,
from a land of terror.

A dire(CZ) vision has been shown to me:
The traitor betrays,(DA) the looter takes loot.
Elam,(DB) attack! Media,(DC) lay siege!
I will bring to an end all the groaning she caused.

At this my body is racked with pain,(DD)
pangs seize me, like those of a woman in labor;(DE)
I am staggered by what I hear,
I am bewildered(DF) by what I see.
My heart(DG) falters,
fear makes me tremble;(DH)
the twilight I longed for
has become a horror(DI) to me.

They set the tables,
they spread the rugs,
they eat, they drink!(DJ)
Get up, you officers,
oil the shields!(DK)

This is what the Lord says to me:

“Go, post a lookout(DL)
and have him report what he sees.
When he sees chariots(DM)
with teams of horses,
riders on donkeys
or riders on camels,(DN)
let him be alert,
fully alert.”

And the lookout[d](DO) shouted,

“Day after day, my lord, I stand on the watchtower;
every night I stay at my post.
Look, here comes a man in a chariot(DP)
with a team of horses.
And he gives back the answer:
‘Babylon(DQ) has fallen,(DR) has fallen!
All the images of its gods(DS)
lie shattered(DT) on the ground!’”

10 My people who are crushed on the threshing floor,(DU)
I tell you what I have heard
from the Lord Almighty,
from the God of Israel.

A Prophecy Against Edom

11 A prophecy against Dumah[e]:(DV)

Someone calls to me from Seir,(DW)
“Watchman, what is left of the night?
Watchman, what is left of the night?”
12 The watchman replies,
“Morning is coming, but also the night.
If you would ask, then ask;
and come back yet again.”

A Prophecy Against Arabia

13 A prophecy(DX) against Arabia:(DY)

You caravans of Dedanites,(DZ)
who camp in the thickets of Arabia,
14 bring water for the thirsty;
you who live in Tema,(EA)
bring food for the fugitives.
15 They flee(EB) from the sword,(EC)
from the drawn sword,
from the bent bow
and from the heat of battle.

16 This is what the Lord says to me: “Within one year, as a servant bound by contract(ED) would count it, all the splendor(EE) of Kedar(EF) will come to an end. 17 The survivors of the archers, the warriors of Kedar, will be few.(EG)” The Lord, the God of Israel, has spoken.(EH)

Galatians 2:1-16

Paul Accepted by the Apostles

Then after fourteen years, I went up again to Jerusalem,(A) this time with Barnabas.(B) I took Titus(C) along also. I went in response to a revelation(D) and, meeting privately with those esteemed as leaders, I presented to them the gospel that I preach among the Gentiles.(E) I wanted to be sure I was not running and had not been running my race(F) in vain. Yet not even Titus,(G) who was with me, was compelled to be circumcised, even though he was a Greek.(H) This matter arose because some false believers(I) had infiltrated our ranks to spy on(J) the freedom(K) we have in Christ Jesus and to make us slaves. We did not give in to them for a moment, so that the truth of the gospel(L) might be preserved for you.

As for those who were held in high esteem(M)—whatever they were makes no difference to me; God does not show favoritism(N)—they added nothing to my message.(O) On the contrary, they recognized that I had been entrusted with the task(P) of preaching the gospel to the uncircumcised,[a](Q) just as Peter(R) had been to the circumcised.[b] For God, who was at work in Peter as an apostle(S) to the circumcised, was also at work in me as an apostle(T) to the Gentiles. James,(U) Cephas[c](V) and John, those esteemed as pillars,(W) gave me and Barnabas(X) the right hand of fellowship when they recognized the grace given to me.(Y) They agreed that we should go to the Gentiles,(Z) and they to the circumcised. 10 All they asked was that we should continue to remember the poor,(AA) the very thing I had been eager to do all along.

Paul Opposes Cephas

11 When Cephas(AB) came to Antioch,(AC) I opposed him to his face, because he stood condemned. 12 For before certain men came from James,(AD) he used to eat with the Gentiles.(AE) But when they arrived, he began to draw back and separate himself from the Gentiles because he was afraid of those who belonged to the circumcision group.(AF) 13 The other Jews joined him in his hypocrisy, so that by their hypocrisy even Barnabas(AG) was led astray.

14 When I saw that they were not acting in line with the truth of the gospel,(AH) I said to Cephas(AI) in front of them all, “You are a Jew, yet you live like a Gentile and not like a Jew.(AJ) How is it, then, that you force Gentiles to follow Jewish customs?(AK)

15 “We who are Jews by birth(AL) and not sinful Gentiles(AM) 16 know that a person is not justified by the works of the law,(AN) but by faith in Jesus Christ.(AO) So we, too, have put our faith in Christ Jesus that we may be justified by faith in[d] Christ and not by the works of the law, because by the works of the law no one will be justified.(AP)

Deliver me from my enemies, O God;(B)
be my fortress against those who are attacking me.(C)
Deliver me from evildoers(D)
and save me from those who are after my blood.(E)

See how they lie in wait for me!
Fierce men conspire(F) against me

See what they spew from their mouths(O)
the words from their lips are sharp as swords,(P)
and they think, “Who can hear us?”(Q)
But you laugh at them, Lord;(R)
you scoff at all those nations.(S)

You are my strength,(T) I watch for you;
you, God, are my fortress,(U)
10 my God on whom I can rely.

God will go before me
and will let me gloat over those who slander me.
11 But do not kill them, Lord our shield,[d](V)
or my people will forget.(W)
In your might uproot them
and bring them down.(X)
12 For the sins of their mouths,(Y)
for the words of their lips,(Z)
let them be caught in their pride.(AA)
For the curses and lies they utter,

consume them till they are no more.(AB)
Then it will be known to the ends of the earth
that God rules over Jacob.(AC)

14 They return at evening,
snarling like dogs,
and prowl about the city.
15 They wander about for food(AD)
and howl if not satisfied.
16 But I will sing(AE) of your strength,(AF)
in the morning(AG) I will sing of your love;(AH)
for you are my fortress,(AI)
my refuge in times of trouble.(AJ)

17 You are my strength, I sing praise to you;
you, God, are my fortress,
my God on whom I can rely.(AK)

Isaiah 15:1-18:7, Galatians 1:1-24, Psalms 58:1-11, Proverbs 23:12

Today is the 14th day of September. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian. It’s great to be here with you today as we do what we do every day, take the next step forward in the journey that were on to take a complete revolution through the Bible, as we take a complete revolution around the sun, all in one year. And hopefully it creates a revolution in our lives. So, we’ll take the next step forward, which is to pick up where we left off yesterday, which will be in the book of Isaiah. When we get to the New Testament we’ll be moving into some new territory, a new letter from the apostle Paul. But first, from the New International Version this week, Isaiah chapter 15 verse 1 through 18 verse 7.

Introduction to the book of Galatians:

Okay. So, as I mentioned at the beginning, we’re beginning a new letter from the apostle Paul today, the letter to the Galatians. So, let’s talk about that a little bit. Galatia at the time of Paul was a province of the Roman Empire, but that area is in modern-day Turkey now. Previously, the Galatians were known as Gauls or Celts before becoming part of the Roman Empire. And, so, we know about five different churches in Galatia that were established during Paul’s first missionary journey because he mentions them. The churches in Placentia, Antioch, Encomium, Lysistrata, and Derby. And since Paul addressed this particular letter that we’re about to read to the churches in Galatia we can safely assume these were the churches that he was writing to, at least those churches. So, we’ll see why this letter is revered as we go through it, why it’s such an important document in New Testament theology. But we’re gonna also notice that the issues Paul was dealing with in second Corinthians, the letter we just finished, these were also issues in Galatia. People had visited these churches behind Paul after he had come and establish them and they taught what Paul considered to be a different gospel. Specifically, the Galatians were being told that they needed to obey Jewish customs and practices in order to follow Jesus. And this included everything, including male circumcision, and the adherence to the Mosaic law, which is something Paul opposed. He was staunchly against this because in Paul’s view Jesus had fulfilled the law and a new covenant had been initiated. So, Paul uses letter to the Galatians as a way to passionately dispel what he considered to be inaccuracies. Ironically, this problem was one of the earliest theological issues that the church had to navigate, period. So, the book of acts records the outcome of the Jerusalem Council. And of course, we’ve already traveled through that territory, but the Jerusalem Council was a meeting that was initiated to arrive at a consensus over exactly this. What was required for a Gentile to become a believer in Jesus? And if you want to revisit that territory, that’s Acts chapter 15. So. We’re not clear whether Paul wrote Galatians before this Jerusalem Council or after the Jerusalem Council. He doesn’t refer to the Jerusalem Council explicitly in the letter. So, some scholars hold the view that Paul wrote this letter before the Council, or maybe even on his way to the Council. If this is the case, visitors to the Galatian churches were undermining Paul’s message and an attempt to align the teachings of Paul with those of the Jerusalem church before they had the chance to wrestle with the issue. And Paul, Paul wasn’t happy about it. And we find that a lot of times, through references in his letters, he’s not happy about these people who come in behind him and try to change what he’s taught. And if all of this is the case, Galatians would be one of the very earliest Christian writings. And it may be Paul’s first letter to any church. But if Paul wrote Galatians after this Council then Paul was using this letter to completely and forcefully reiterate what the Council had decided, right? This would mean that people had come in after the Council behind Paul and were trying to change things around. But alas, that’s the problem about dating some of these documents. We don’t know for sure. We just know in general. But the argument Paul’s gonna layout and Galatians for us and all of those issues that we just talked about, that prompted him to write, these were very weighty issues at the time. Judaism was an exclusive religion for Jews. So, allowing faith in Jesus without the cover of Judaism opened up salvation through Jesus Christ to everyone in the world. This is a very different mindset for a Hebrew person who has been told they were chosen and set apart and were a part of something very exclusive. So, when the church got together to talk about Gentiles, and they were only talking about Gentiles because the Holy Spirit was falling upon Gentiles and people were following Jesus, first, everyone assumed this was a Jewish only thing. But the Holy Spirit revealed clearly otherwise. So, once they got together and made this decision, it clearly separated what we would call Christianity today from Judaism, which ultimately brought persecution from the Jews and the Romans alike. And…I mean…as we continue through the New Testament we’re gonna find the backdrop of persecution because of what we’re talking about right now to be a theme. So, this is the backdrop for the writing of Galatians, but the content of Galatians is foundational in New Testament theology, right? Things like the gospel of freedom and grace, justification through faith. These are all outlined in this little letter. So, off we go into the wild frontier and into some new territory. Galatians chapter 1.

Prayer:

Father we thank you for your word. We thank you for new territory that were moving into as we move into this letter of Galatians and we invite your Holy Spirit to speak the truths of our faith to us, reigniting us, and reconnecting us with our reality in You. Come Holy Spirit we pray. In Jesus’ name we ask. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hey DAB family this is Josh from Indiana. I just want to take a moment and thank God for this community. One thing I hate in churches is when our denominations separate. And one thing I love about the DAB family is I never hear anything about one way versus the other and I just love that about this community. God just put on my heart to call in and say something about that. Love you all.

Beautiful family, this is Pastor Gene from Bradenton Florida. I love you so much. Please join me in prayer. Father, we thank You so much for Your work in our life and we thank You for this community. We thank You for Brian. We thank You for Jill. Father, we lift up our brother __ from Ohio. We pray for Your mighty hand of deliverance over his life. Father, in the name of Jesus we also pray for our sister Prophetic Intercessor. We pray that You will encourage her, that You will help her, that You will lift her up. We pray for our sister Joanne Ray who is feeling very scared and she was about to have issues with her dad. Father, in the name of Jesus we pray for open doors for care for her dad and we pray Father that Your mighty hand will be upon her sister and that all that anxiety will be replaced by peace that surpasses all understanding. Father, we pray for our brother Darrell from __ and his encouragement to thank those that have led us to the Lord. I did that after listening to my brother’s call and I know it was a blessing for the ladies at church, invited my mom to church 41 years ago. So, thank You brother Darrell. Thank You for that powerful testimony. Thank You oh God for our brother Will from Bozeman Montana. Continue oh God working in his marriage. Continue Father the work that You have started. You are more than faithful to complete it. And thank You, thank You so much Father for delivering our brother Terry, the truck driver from death. And we pray for special comfort in his life over the death of his pet. God…our sister B’s mom is experiencing health issues. We pray for Your healing touch upon her life. And I pray for all my brothers and sisters and bless them in the name of the Father the Son and the Holy Spirit. Pastor Gene from Bradenton Florida.

Hi Daily Audio Bible this is Emily of Houston of Jim and Emily. And first of all, I want to thank you Brian and Jill are the amazing gathering and everyone involved. I’m just still favoring it and the sweetness of the communion and meeting everybody. So wonderful. Thank you. And a praise report, I did finish my book along the way. Now I need prayer just to get the rest of it done, the next steps. But the main reason I’m calling for prayer is that this weekend on Friday I’m going to Orange County California for a memorial service for a family friend. You know those family friends you called uncle, and aunt, and go to their house for holidays, at least my family did while immigrant. Well, he passed away and I don’t know if they were believers or not, they weren’t when I was kids. But…so…and my sister’s going to be there with my 12-year-old nephew and they are total atheists. So, I just ask you guys to pray that the Lord would use me not only to bring comfort but to shine the love Jesus and that the Lord would give divine appointments and openings for me to pray for people and to shower them with the love of the one true God. I love you guys and I appreciate your prayers, I covet your prayers. Continue to pray for Emily and Jim as we continue to pray for you. Thank you and bless you. Bye.

Dear amazing friends this is Candace from Oregon thanking you for your prayers for my son Micah. He is not drinking, not at least this week. And he is having really long talks with me, mostly about his dad who, many of you know, we lost on March 11, 2017. Would you pray with him for me right now? Dear Lord, as Micha’s court date approaches he will very likely lose his driver’s license on…at this court date September 24. Come what may, I pray that You continue to work in his heart. At this point he continues to say that he is not sure that you are real. So, Lord, would you reveal yourself to him unmistakably and help him by Your Holy Spirit to come to trust you with his entire life, with everything that he is? Thank you that he dreams of being a dad. He’s 35 years old and would really like to meet that…that right person to have a family with and make a lifetime commitment. This is a good dream and Lord I pray that you bless him in Jesus name.

Isaiah 15-18

A Prophecy Against Moab(A)

15 A prophecy(B) against Moab:(C)

Ar(D) in Moab is ruined,(E)
destroyed in a night!
Kir(F) in Moab is ruined,
destroyed in a night!
Dibon(G) goes up to its temple,
to its high places(H) to weep;
Moab wails(I) over Nebo(J) and Medeba.
Every head is shaved(K)
and every beard cut off.(L)
In the streets they wear sackcloth;(M)
on the roofs(N) and in the public squares(O)
they all wail,(P)
prostrate with weeping.(Q)
Heshbon(R) and Elealeh(S) cry out,
their voices are heard all the way to Jahaz.(T)
Therefore the armed men of Moab cry out,
and their hearts are faint.

My heart cries out(U) over Moab;(V)
her fugitives(W) flee as far as Zoar,(X)
as far as Eglath Shelishiyah.
They go up the hill to Luhith,
weeping as they go;
on the road to Horonaim(Y)
they lament their destruction.(Z)
The waters of Nimrim are dried up(AA)
and the grass is withered;(AB)
the vegetation is gone(AC)
and nothing green is left.(AD)
So the wealth they have acquired(AE) and stored up
they carry away over the Ravine of the Poplars.
Their outcry echoes along the border of Moab;
their wailing reaches as far as Eglaim,
their lamentation as far as Beer(AF) Elim.
The waters of Dimon[a] are full of blood,
but I will bring still more upon Dimon[b]
a lion(AG) upon the fugitives of Moab(AH)
and upon those who remain in the land.

16 Send lambs(AI) as tribute(AJ)
to the ruler of the land,
from Sela,(AK) across the desert,
to the mount of Daughter Zion.(AL)
Like fluttering birds
pushed from the nest,(AM)
so are the women of Moab(AN)
at the fords(AO) of the Arnon.(AP)

“Make up your mind,” Moab says.
“Render a decision.
Make your shadow like night—
at high noon.
Hide the fugitives,(AQ)
do not betray the refugees.
Let the Moabite fugitives stay with you;
be their shelter(AR) from the destroyer.”

The oppressor(AS) will come to an end,
and destruction will cease;(AT)
the aggressor will vanish from the land.
In love a throne(AU) will be established;(AV)
in faithfulness a man will sit on it—
one from the house[c] of David(AW)
one who in judging seeks justice(AX)
and speeds the cause of righteousness.

We have heard of Moab’s(AY) pride(AZ)
how great is her arrogance!—
of her conceit, her pride and her insolence;
but her boasts are empty.
Therefore the Moabites wail,(BA)
they wail together for Moab.
Lament and grieve
for the raisin cakes(BB) of Kir Hareseth.(BC)
The fields of Heshbon(BD) wither,(BE)
the vines of Sibmah(BF) also.
The rulers of the nations
have trampled down the choicest vines,(BG)
which once reached Jazer(BH)
and spread toward the desert.
Their shoots spread out(BI)
and went as far as the sea.[d](BJ)
So I weep,(BK) as Jazer weeps,
for the vines of Sibmah.
Heshbon and Elealeh,(BL)
I drench you with tears!(BM)
The shouts of joy(BN) over your ripened fruit
and over your harvests(BO) have been stilled.
10 Joy and gladness are taken away from the orchards;(BP)
no one sings or shouts(BQ) in the vineyards;
no one treads(BR) out wine at the presses,(BS)
for I have put an end to the shouting.
11 My heart laments for Moab(BT) like a harp,(BU)
my inmost being(BV) for Kir Hareseth.
12 When Moab appears at her high place,(BW)
she only wears herself out;
when she goes to her shrine(BX) to pray,
it is to no avail.(BY)

13 This is the word the Lord has already spoken concerning Moab. 14 But now the Lord says: “Within three years,(BZ) as a servant bound by contract(CA) would count them,(CB) Moab’s splendor and all her many people will be despised,(CC) and her survivors will be very few and feeble.”(CD)

A Prophecy Against Damascus

17 A prophecy(CE) against Damascus:(CF)

“See, Damascus will no longer be a city
but will become a heap of ruins.(CG)
The cities of Aroer(CH) will be deserted
and left to flocks,(CI) which will lie down,(CJ)
with no one to make them afraid.(CK)
The fortified(CL) city will disappear from Ephraim,
and royal power from Damascus;
the remnant of Aram will be
like the glory(CM) of the Israelites,”(CN)
declares the Lord Almighty.

“In that day(CO) the glory(CP) of Jacob will fade;
the fat of his body will waste(CQ) away.
It will be as when reapers harvest the standing grain,
gathering(CR) the grain in their arms—
as when someone gleans heads of grain(CS)
in the Valley of Rephaim.(CT)
Yet some gleanings will remain,(CU)
as when an olive tree is beaten,(CV)
leaving two or three olives on the topmost branches,
four or five on the fruitful boughs,”
declares the Lord, the God of Israel.

In that day(CW) people will look(CX) to their Maker(CY)
and turn their eyes to the Holy One(CZ) of Israel.
They will not look to the altars,(DA)
the work of their hands,(DB)
and they will have no regard for the Asherah poles[e](DC)
and the incense altars their fingers(DD) have made.

In that day their strong cities, which they left because of the Israelites, will be like places abandoned to thickets and undergrowth.(DE) And all will be desolation.

10 You have forgotten(DF) God your Savior;(DG)
you have not remembered the Rock,(DH) your fortress.(DI)
Therefore, though you set out the finest plants
and plant imported vines,(DJ)
11 though on the day you set them out, you make them grow,
and on the morning(DK) when you plant them, you bring them to bud,
yet the harvest(DL) will be as nothing(DM)
in the day of disease and incurable(DN) pain.(DO)

12 Woe to the many nations that rage(DP)
they rage like the raging sea!(DQ)
Woe to the peoples who roar(DR)
they roar like the roaring of great waters!(DS)
13 Although the peoples roar(DT) like the roar of surging waters,
when he rebukes(DU) them they flee(DV) far away,
driven before the wind like chaff(DW) on the hills,
like tumbleweed before a gale.(DX)
14 In the evening, sudden(DY) terror!(DZ)
Before the morning, they are gone!(EA)
This is the portion of those who loot us,
the lot of those who plunder us.

A Prophecy Against Cush

18 Woe(EB) to the land of whirring wings[f]
along the rivers of Cush,[g](EC)
which sends envoys(ED) by sea
in papyrus(EE) boats over the water.

Go, swift messengers,
to a people tall and smooth-skinned,(EF)
to a people feared far and wide,
an aggressive(EG) nation of strange speech,
whose land is divided by rivers.(EH)

All you people of the world,(EI)
you who live on the earth,
when a banner(EJ) is raised on the mountains,
you will see it,
and when a trumpet(EK) sounds,
you will hear it.
This is what the Lord says to me:
“I will remain quiet(EL) and will look on from my dwelling place,(EM)
like shimmering heat in the sunshine,(EN)
like a cloud of dew(EO) in the heat of harvest.”
For, before the harvest, when the blossom is gone
and the flower becomes a ripening grape,
he will cut off(EP) the shoots with pruning knives,
and cut down and take away the spreading branches.(EQ)
They will all be left to the mountain birds of prey(ER)
and to the wild animals;(ES)
the birds will feed on them all summer,
the wild animals all winter.

At that time gifts(ET) will be brought to the Lord Almighty

from a people tall and smooth-skinned,(EU)
from a people feared(EV) far and wide,
an aggressive nation of strange speech,
whose land is divided by rivers(EW)

the gifts will be brought to Mount Zion, the place of the Name of the Lord Almighty.(EX)

Galatians 1

Paul, an apostle(A)—sent not from men nor by a man,(B) but by Jesus Christ(C) and God the Father,(D) who raised him from the dead(E) and all the brothers and sisters[a] with me,(F)

To the churches in Galatia:(G)

Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ,(H) who gave himself for our sins(I) to rescue us from the present evil age,(J) according to the will of our God and Father,(K) to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.(L)

No Other Gospel

I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called(M) you to live in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel(N) which is really no gospel at all. Evidently some people are throwing you into confusion(O) and are trying to pervert(P) the gospel of Christ. But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you,(Q) let them be under God’s curse!(R) As we have already said, so now I say again: If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted,(S) let them be under God’s curse!

10 Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people?(T) If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ.

Paul Called by God

11 I want you to know, brothers and sisters,(U) that the gospel I preached(V) is not of human origin. 12 I did not receive it from any man,(W) nor was I taught it; rather, I received it by revelation(X) from Jesus Christ.(Y)

13 For you have heard of my previous way of life in Judaism,(Z) how intensely I persecuted the church of God(AA) and tried to destroy it.(AB) 14 I was advancing in Judaism beyond many of my own age among my people and was extremely zealous(AC) for the traditions of my fathers.(AD) 15 But when God, who set me apart from my mother’s womb(AE) and called me(AF) by his grace, was pleased 16 to reveal his Son in me so that I might preach him among the Gentiles,(AG) my immediate response was not to consult any human being.(AH) 17 I did not go up to Jerusalem to see those who were apostles before I was, but I went into Arabia. Later I returned to Damascus.(AI)

18 Then after three years,(AJ) I went up to Jerusalem(AK) to get acquainted with Cephas[b] and stayed with him fifteen days. 19 I saw none of the other apostles—only James,(AL) the Lord’s brother. 20 I assure you before God(AM) that what I am writing you is no lie.(AN)

21 Then I went to Syria(AO) and Cilicia.(AP) 22 I was personally unknown to the churches of Judea(AQ) that are in Christ.(AR) 23 They only heard the report: “The man who formerly persecuted us is now preaching the faith(AS) he once tried to destroy.”(AT) 24 And they praised God(AU) because of me.

Psalm 58

Psalm 58[a]

For the director of music. To the tune of “Do Not Destroy.” Of David. A miktam.[b]

Do you rulers indeed speak justly?(A)
Do you judge people with equity?
No, in your heart you devise injustice,(B)
and your hands mete out violence on the earth.(C)

Even from birth the wicked go astray;
from the womb they are wayward, spreading lies.
Their venom is like the venom of a snake,(D)
like that of a cobra that has stopped its ears,
that will not heed(E) the tune of the charmer,(F)
however skillful the enchanter may be.

Break the teeth in their mouths, O God;(G)
Lord, tear out the fangs of those lions!(H)
Let them vanish like water that flows away;(I)

Before your pots can feel the heat of the thorns(M)
whether they be green or dry—the wicked will be swept away.[c](N)
10 The righteous will be glad(O) when they are avenged,(P)
when they dip their feet in the blood of the wicked.(Q)
11 Then people will say,
“Surely the righteous still are rewarded;(R)
surely there is a God who judges the earth.”(S)

Isaiah 12:1-14:32, 2 Corinthians 13:1-14 , Psalms 57:1-11 , Proverbs 23:9-11

Today is the 13th day of September. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian. It is a pleasure and a joy and an honor to be here with you today. How? We’re getting pretty close to the middle of the month, the middle of another month, but we’re not there so let’s not get ahead of ourselves. We are here, September 13th and this week we’ve been reading from the New International Version. So, we’ll pick up where we left off yesterday. Isaiah, chapter 12 verse 1 through 14 verse 32 today.

Commentary:

Okay. So, when we finish the letters found in the Bible, often w’ll find a closing benediction. And, ya know, it feels just like it’s a just a word of encouragement, a little pat on the back, a little blessing, but these benedictions are so rich and so full of instruction for life that we shouldn’t blow by them. We should actually receive them, allow the words to wash over us as a blessing because they will speak volumes into our lives. So, for example, the closing benediction to second Corinthians is, “brothers and sisters, rejoice. Strive for full restoration, encourage one another, be of one mind, live in peace, and the God of love and peace will be with you. Greet one another with a holy kiss. All God’s people here send their greetings. May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.” Doesn’t that just lift you inside, that blessing pronounced thousands of years ago, washing across history, and encouraging us today. Paul, of course, was blessing the congregation at Corinth and inviting them to be together in unity. So, it’s certainly an encouragement for us to do the same in our faith communities, but also in all of our communities, including the community of our home, including the community of our marriage. So, think of this blessing from the perspective of your marriage. Brothers and sisters, rejoice strive for full restoration, encourage one another, be of one mind, live in peace and the God of love and peace will be with you. Greet one another with a holy kiss. You see, follow that today and tomorrow and into next week consistently and watch what happens because you might bear witness to the miraculous in some of your relationships.

Prayer:

Holy Spirit, we invite you into that. We have just taken this through our minds and it is seeping into our hearts but we need you to cultivate and plant it in our lives so that it may be the fruit of the Spirit within us. Come, we’re listening, and we see, wow, here it is in black and white, very very simple to understand, things that can practically change the atmosphere in our relationships. Come Holy Spirit we pray. Lead us into all truth. We ask in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hey everybody it’s Margo from Australia. I’m afraid I have another break from my 30 day challenge of paying for mental health today. So, I would really love it if you could pray for me and my husband. I’m just…well…I want to be a bit real with you for a moment. Every now and then I think about going to Liberia next year and just have a little bit of a freak out…cause I’m just normal…I’m human. Sometimes I get a little bit scared. And I couldn’t sleep last night. Laying in bed awake. What if this? What if that? What if I hate it?  What if I can’t do any good? What if I don’t bring anyone to Jesus? What if, what if, what if? Anyway, I woke up this morning and texted a few people and my dad texted back and said, well, on the other hand, what if you didn’t go and you missed out on God’s best? So, that was some pretty good advice. I forgot to put my timer for this call. So, I’ll just have to guess. But I would love it if you would keep praying for us but there’s no doubt in our mind about what we’re doing. Certainly, would never question what we’re doing but some days it’s a little bit scary and it’s a bit scary to leave everything we know and all our friends and family and kind of think, oh my goodness, what if I hate over there? And I have to keep reminding myself…well…the happiest and safest place to be is in the center of God’s will. Anyway, thank you so much for your prayers. It’s so lovely to be able to reach out to you guys and know that you’re praying. Have a great day everyone. Bye.

This is Stephanie from Maryland and North Carolina. Long time DAB listener. I want to encourage those who are going through family challenges. Prayer changes family situations. Keep praying and standing on God’s promises. This year I witnessed restoration and healing in my family and members came back to the Lord. I want to pray for those who are grieving and mourning. And in Jesus’ name, I lift up all who have lost loved ones, whose fathers, mothers, sons, daughters, aunts, cousins, and friends have transitioned. I pray in Jesus’ name that you will send people to come alongside them, give them hugs, give them words of encouragement, that you would send Your love and demonstrate the love of God. Jesus understands our mourning and because He wept when His friend Lazarus died, but our hope and expectation is in Jesus and He will heal our broken hearts. In Jesus’ name. Amen. Shalom, and thanks for the Hardin family and to the DAB team and to my family and friends in Lawana. Shalom. This is Stephanie from Maryland and North Carolina.

Hi neighbors its Lisa the encourager. I hope you all are doing great. I just wanted to share with you something that I learned this past Sunday. And I just thought it was very…it was just a great thing that really sunk into my soul. And I just wanted to share with each one of you. It’s from John 15. It’s John 15:5 and a verse that we’re very familiar with but I…it was really talking to be at different ways. So, I just wanted to share that with you. It’s, I am the vine and you are the branches if you remain in me and I and you, you’ll bear much fruit and apart for me you can do nothing. And, so, we know that Jesus gave this message and that He was the vine and we were the branches and how each one of us are to be commended. So, I want to tell you all that you’re doing exactly what Jesus commanded you to do because you’re listening to the Daily Audio Bible. So, you are the branch that is sucking everything you can out of that vine because you’re listening to the Daily Audio Bible every day and trying to get the nutrients that you need. And it says, if you remain in Me and My words remain in you, ask whatever you wish and it will be done to you. The gospel says if you keep My commands you will remain in My love just as I have kept My Father’s commands and remain in His love. And just like we learned not too long ago that Jesus is praying for each and every one of us. I just thought this was so beautiful because I want to say to every one of you, great job, good job. And, you know, give yourself a pat on the back. And you know we always say that things we’re doing wrong, all the things that we haven’t done, and all the times that we screw up but you know what, you’re doing something great because you’re listening to the Bible every day. So, God loves that and you’re making Him smile and He is pleased with you. And I love you all….

Hi it’s Gloria from New York City. It’s just a few minutes after I called but I hope this gets played cause I hung up and I continued to listening to the community prayer line and the first call I heard after I just hung up after the last call to you guys was Kathy from Kentucky. And…oh Kathy…I also…I know Terry lost his dog a few weeks ago as well. Kathy, I heard you…and…it just made me think about how it’s tied into, you know, how many of us are lonely. You know, I’m still trying to go to sleep at night and I just say often to God, I’m just so lonely Lord. I’m just…I’m so lonely. I have a couple…three cats right now actually. But I’m so sad for you and am I’m praying for you tonight and I’m going to keep you in my prayers. So sweet and so special to have these wonderful pets that we get to have as companions. I believe that you did do the right thing. I had a puppy that got very sick once and I tried to save her and I regretted not actually putting her down sooner. And she suffered so much. It was so sad. I am praying for you that you will find companionship but mostly that you’ll feel comfort in all of your brothers and sisters out here, that the Lord has provided us. And I just want to and with…I don’t say thank you enough. I don’t thank Brian and Jill and your whole family and everybody who’s working on the Daily Audio Bible. It’s amazing, amazing, amazing that we get to do this, that you do this every single day. Thank you so much.

Good morning DABbers. I am a Burning Bush that will not be Devoured for the Glory of Our God and King. This is Walda calling from Charlotte. I am heading north this morning, it’s Sunday funday. Oh family, I need prayer for myself. I have been experiencing some anxiety over the past…I’d say…a week now. I’m not sure why. I know that God did not give us a spirit of fear but a spirit of love, boldness, and of a sound mind and I pray that over myself and anyone else that struggling with anxiety, that we do not have to believe everything we think. Family, please pray for my son Emmanuel. He lives in Wilmington and he’s trying to escape the storm. Please pray that he makes it home before the storm hits. Praise God for his journey, his sobriety. And he’s is tugging and tugging since his overdose last spring actually…he’s been sober for over six months now…praise the Lord. Pray for all those who are struggling with addiction problems __ and the list is long and I pray for deliverance in Jesus’ name and I praise God for just holding onto them until they reach what God has assigned them to reach. Well anyway, I am babbling. I love you all. I love you all. Brian thank you so much. God bless you and your family. I will be in touch. Bye.

Isaiah 12-14

Songs of Praise

12 In that day(A) you will say:

“I will praise(B) you, Lord.
Although you were angry with me,
your anger has turned away(C)
and you have comforted(D) me.
Surely God is my salvation;(E)
I will trust(F) and not be afraid.
The Lord, the Lord himself,(G) is my strength(H) and my defense[a];
he has become my salvation.(I)
With joy you will draw water(J)
from the wells(K) of salvation.

In that day(L) you will say:

“Give praise to the Lord, proclaim his name;(M)
make known among the nations(N) what he has done,
and proclaim that his name is exalted.(O)
Sing(P) to the Lord, for he has done glorious things;(Q)
let this be known to all the world.
Shout aloud and sing for joy,(R) people of Zion,
for great(S) is the Holy One of Israel(T) among you.(U)

A Prophecy Against Babylon

13 A prophecy(V) against Babylon(W) that Isaiah son of Amoz(X) saw:(Y)

Raise a banner(Z) on a bare hilltop,
shout to them;
beckon to them
to enter the gates(AA) of the nobles.
I have commanded those I prepared for battle;
I have summoned my warriors(AB) to carry out my wrath(AC)
those who rejoice(AD) in my triumph.

Listen, a noise on the mountains,
like that of a great multitude!(AE)
Listen, an uproar(AF) among the kingdoms,
like nations massing together!
The Lord Almighty(AG) is mustering(AH)
an army for war.
They come from faraway lands,
from the ends of the heavens(AI)
the Lord and the weapons(AJ) of his wrath(AK)
to destroy(AL) the whole country.

Wail,(AM) for the day(AN) of the Lord is near;
it will come like destruction(AO) from the Almighty.[b](AP)
Because of this, all hands will go limp,(AQ)
every heart will melt with fear.(AR)
Terror(AS) will seize them,
pain and anguish will grip(AT) them;
they will writhe like a woman in labor.(AU)
They will look aghast at each other,
their faces aflame.(AV)

See, the day(AW) of the Lord is coming
—a cruel(AX) day, with wrath(AY) and fierce anger(AZ)
to make the land desolate
and destroy the sinners within it.
10 The stars of heaven and their constellations
will not show their light.(BA)
The rising sun(BB) will be darkened(BC)
and the moon will not give its light.(BD)
11 I will punish(BE) the world for its evil,
the wicked(BF) for their sins.
I will put an end to the arrogance of the haughty(BG)
and will humble(BH) the pride of the ruthless.(BI)
12 I will make people(BJ) scarcer than pure gold,
more rare than the gold of Ophir.(BK)
13 Therefore I will make the heavens tremble;(BL)
and the earth will shake(BM) from its place
at the wrath(BN) of the Lord Almighty,
in the day of his burning anger.(BO)

14 Like a hunted(BP) gazelle,
like sheep without a shepherd,(BQ)
they will all return to their own people,
they will flee(BR) to their native land.(BS)
15 Whoever is captured will be thrust through;
all who are caught will fall(BT) by the sword.(BU)
16 Their infants(BV) will be dashed to pieces before their eyes;
their houses will be looted and their wives violated.(BW)

17 See, I will stir up(BX) against them the Medes,(BY)
who do not care for silver
and have no delight in gold.(BZ)
18 Their bows(CA) will strike down the young men;(CB)
they will have no mercy(CC) on infants,
nor will they look with compassion on children.(CD)
19 Babylon,(CE) the jewel of kingdoms,(CF)
the pride and glory(CG) of the Babylonians,[c]
will be overthrown(CH) by God
like Sodom and Gomorrah.(CI)
20 She will never be inhabited(CJ)
or lived in through all generations;
there no nomads(CK) will pitch their tents,
there no shepherds will rest their flocks.
21 But desert creatures(CL) will lie there,
jackals(CM) will fill her houses;
there the owls(CN) will dwell,
and there the wild goats(CO) will leap about.
22 Hyenas(CP) will inhabit her strongholds,(CQ)
jackals(CR) her luxurious palaces.
Her time is at hand,(CS)
and her days will not be prolonged.(CT)

14 The Lord will have compassion(CU) on Jacob;
once again he will choose(CV) Israel
and will settle them in their own land.(CW)
Foreigners(CX) will join them
and unite with the descendants of Jacob.
Nations will take them
and bring(CY) them to their own place.
And Israel will take possession of the nations(CZ)
and make them male and female servants in the Lord’s land.
They will make captives(DA) of their captors
and rule over their oppressors.(DB)

On the day the Lord gives you relief(DC) from your suffering and turmoil(DD) and from the harsh labor forced on you,(DE) you will take up this taunt(DF) against the king of Babylon:(DG)

How the oppressor(DH) has come to an end!
How his fury[d] has ended!
The Lord has broken the rod(DI) of the wicked,(DJ)
the scepter(DK) of the rulers,
which in anger struck down peoples(DL)
with unceasing blows,
and in fury subdued(DM) nations
with relentless aggression.(DN)
All the lands are at rest and at peace;(DO)
they break into singing.(DP)
Even the junipers(DQ) and the cedars of Lebanon
gloat over you and say,
“Now that you have been laid low,
no one comes to cut us down.”(DR)

The realm of the dead(DS) below is all astir
to meet you at your coming;
it rouses the spirits of the departed(DT) to greet you—
all those who were leaders(DU) in the world;
it makes them rise from their thrones—
all those who were kings over the nations.(DV)
10 They will all respond,
they will say to you,
“You also have become weak, as we are;
you have become like us.”(DW)
11 All your pomp has been brought down to the grave,(DX)
along with the noise of your harps;(DY)
maggots are spread out beneath you
and worms(DZ) cover you.(EA)

12 How you have fallen(EB) from heaven,
morning star,(EC) son of the dawn!
You have been cast down to the earth,
you who once laid low the nations!(ED)
13 You said in your heart,
“I will ascend(EE) to the heavens;
I will raise my throne(EF)
above the stars of God;
I will sit enthroned on the mount of assembly,(EG)
on the utmost heights(EH) of Mount Zaphon.[e]
14 I will ascend above the tops of the clouds;(EI)
I will make myself like the Most High.”(EJ)
15 But you are brought down(EK) to the realm of the dead,(EL)
to the depths(EM) of the pit.(EN)

16 Those who see you stare at you,
they ponder your fate:(EO)
“Is this the man who shook(EP) the earth
and made kingdoms tremble,
17 the man who made the world a wilderness,(EQ)
who overthrew(ER) its cities
and would not let his captives go home?”(ES)

18 All the kings of the nations lie in state,
each in his own tomb.(ET)
19 But you are cast out(EU) of your tomb
like a rejected branch;
you are covered with the slain,(EV)
with those pierced by the sword,(EW)
those who descend to the stones of the pit.(EX)
Like a corpse trampled underfoot,
20 you will not join them in burial,(EY)
for you have destroyed your land
and killed your people.

Let the offspring(EZ) of the wicked(FA)
never be mentioned(FB) again.
21 Prepare a place to slaughter his children(FC)
for the sins of their ancestors;(FD)
they are not to rise to inherit the land
and cover the earth with their cities.

22 “I will rise up(FE) against them,”
declares the Lord Almighty.
“I will wipe out Babylon’s name(FF) and survivors,
her offspring and descendants,(FG)
declares the Lord.
23 “I will turn her into a place for owls(FH)
and into swampland;
I will sweep her with the broom of destruction,(FI)
declares the Lord Almighty.(FJ)

24 The Lord Almighty has sworn,(FK)

“Surely, as I have planned,(FL) so it will be,
and as I have purposed, so it will happen.(FM)
25 I will crush the Assyrian(FN) in my land;
on my mountains I will trample him down.
His yoke(FO) will be taken from my people,
and his burden removed from their shoulders.(FP)

26 This is the plan(FQ) determined for the whole world;
this is the hand(FR) stretched out over all nations.
27 For the Lord Almighty has purposed,(FS) and who can thwart him?
His hand(FT) is stretched out, and who can turn it back?(FU)

A Prophecy Against the Philistines

28 This prophecy(FV) came in the year(FW) King Ahaz(FX) died:

29 Do not rejoice, all you Philistines,(FY)
that the rod that struck you is broken;
from the root of that snake will spring up a viper,(FZ)
its fruit will be a darting, venomous serpent.(GA)
30 The poorest of the poor will find pasture,
and the needy(GB) will lie down in safety.(GC)
But your root I will destroy by famine;(GD)
it will slay(GE) your survivors.(GF)

31 Wail,(GG) you gate!(GH) Howl, you city!
Melt away, all you Philistines!(GI)
A cloud of smoke comes from the north,(GJ)
and there is not a straggler in its ranks.(GK)
32 What answer shall be given
to the envoys(GL) of that nation?
“The Lord has established Zion,(GM)
and in her his afflicted people will find refuge.(GN)

2 Corinthians 13

Final Warnings

13 This will be my third visit to you.(A) “Every matter must be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.”[a](B) I already gave you a warning when I was with you the second time. I now repeat it while absent:(C) On my return I will not spare(D) those who sinned earlier(E) or any of the others, since you are demanding proof that Christ is speaking through me.(F) He is not weak in dealing with you, but is powerful among you. For to be sure, he was crucified in weakness,(G) yet he lives by God’s power.(H) Likewise, we are weak(I) in him, yet by God’s power we will live with him(J) in our dealing with you.

Examine yourselves(K) to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves.(L) Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you(M)—unless, of course, you fail the test? And I trust that you will discover that we have not failed the test. Now we pray to God that you will not do anything wrong—not so that people will see that we have stood the test but so that you will do what is right even though we may seem to have failed. For we cannot do anything against the truth, but only for the truth. We are glad whenever we are weak(N) but you are strong;(O) and our prayer is that you may be fully restored.(P) 10 This is why I write these things when I am absent, that when I come I may not have to be harsh(Q) in my use of authority—the authority the Lord gave me for building you up, not for tearing you down.(R)

Final Greetings

11 Finally, brothers and sisters,(S) rejoice! Strive for full restoration, encourage one another, be of one mind, live in peace.(T) And the God of love(U) and peace(V) will be with you.

12 Greet one another with a holy kiss.(W) 13 All God’s people here send their greetings.(X)

14 May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ,(Y) and the love of God,(Z) and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit(AA) be with you all.

Isaiah 10:1-11:16, 2 Corinthians 12:11-21, Psalms 56:1-13, Proverbs 23:6-8

Today is the 12th day of September. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian. It’s great to be here with you today, a fine day that it is. And I trust that it’s a fine day wherever you might be, whether it’d be early in the morning or late in the evening. It’s always a good time to come around the global campfire, take the next step forward in the Scriptures. And that’s what we’ll do. We’re reading from the New International Version this week. Isaiah 10:1-11:16.

Commentary:

Okay. So, when we began the book of Isaiah, we talked about the fact that it’s one of the most quoted Old Testament books found in the New Testament. And this is because Isaiah gives the clear promise of a coming deliverer, a messiah. And the writers of the New Testament knew that. And so they reveal Jesus as the promised savior, in part, by the ways that he fulfilled those prophecies. But we might wonder, how did those connections get made? What was it that made Jesus a contender in the first century to be the fulfillment of a prophecy from the book of Isaiah much earlier? We can follow the trail historically, but the book of Isaiah today kind of lays it out for us. So, when we started chapter 10, Isaiah writes, What sorrow awaits the unjust judges and those who issue unfair laws. They deprive the poor of justice. They deny the rights of the needy and they prey upon the widows and take advantage of the orphans. Okay, so Isaiah wasn’t observing that kind of behavior for the first time in all of human history. He was simply naming a pattern that had been happening long before Isaiah and would continue happening long after. And it’s easy enough to say that it’s still happening. But the hope found in this prophecy was that one day a redeemer would come and set things right. So, there is a promise out there. Next where Isaiah goes is to foretell the Assyrian invasion of the northern kingdom that would eventually carry ten of the tribes of Israel into exile. And we’ve read that story, so we know that it happened. And then we also know that the Babylonian empire came and conquered what was left - the southern kingdom of Judah. But Isaiah foretold that all wouldn’t be lost. He said there would be a remnant left in Israel, the survivors of the house of Jacob. There would be a remnant left, and they would be able to return. We’ve also read those stories. So, now let’s zoom to the first century, which is the time of Jesus. The Jewish people were the descendants of this foretold remnant. So, Isaiah’s prophecy had become a reality. But the problem was it wasn’t completed. They were in their homeland but it wasn’t theirs. So, at the time of Jesus it was controlled by the Roman empire. It was not considered Israel, it was considered the province of Syria. They were experiencing all of the oppression and injustice that Isaiah was talking about. And so they were holding on to this promise that someday, someone, some deliverer was going to come. So, then when we read recognizable things in Isaiah like, Out of the stump of David’s family will grow a shoot, a branch bearing fruit from the old root, and the Spirit of the Lord will rest upon him. The spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of the fear of the Lord. He will delight in obeying the Lord, right? And the prophecy continues on. We can see that Jesus fit the criteria. Now, whether or not he was the foretold messiah was a topic of discussion among the people all throughout his ministry. And we know that in the end, he was rejected. They had missed it. But by the time the gospels were being written, these prophecies were looked at in light of Jesus life and ministry and claims. And this became a very, very important thing to connect Jesus to prophecies that he had fulfilled. Now we could say, Well, why didn’t they just turn to the gospel of Matthew? The gospel of Matthew, you can’t practically turn in a full circle before Jesus fulfils some kind of prophecy in that book. Or why didn’t they turn to any of the other gospels? Why didn’t they turn to Paul’s letters? They could have seen all of this. It’s because those books weren’t written yet. In fact, it is books like the gospel of Matthew that extensively look into the Old Testament prophecies for ways in which Jesus fulfilled them. And so this is how we get from there to here.

Prayer:

And, Father, we thank You that You have brought us from there to here. And that You continue to lead us forward, and that You continue to guide and direct our steps and lead us into all truth. And we thank You for all that we’ve learned from the Scriptures, whether it be something that pierces us to our very hearts because You are speaking so deeply to us, or whether it be an understanding of context and history. We thank You. Because the picture of our redemption becomes clear in the Scriptures and we realize that we’re carrying the banner forward. We are carrying this story forward in human existence and to a world that needs to know. So, come Holy Spirit, we pray. In Jesus name we ask. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hi DAB family. I’m really nervous about this cause I never really call or reach out for help but I’d really appreciate your prayers. I’ve been having a difficult few months just in my relationship with God. And, so, quite lost. I’m really stressed to the point where I’ve signed off from work from stress and other bits and pieces. Been having some relationship…not struggles…but just disappointed…I guess growing pains…and just wondering where God is in all of that. My sister has just recently also been admitted to a mental health unit in the UK because she’s having some large hemorrhages as well. So, I’d just really appreciate your prayers for myself and my family at this time. By the way this is Uma __ relationships right. And, but yeah, I’d really just appreciate your prayers. Just really…just getting caught up in all my situations right now in all the things I’m dealing with. And I’ve got my mom’s…my mom moved out of the __ in 7th of July __ in London and we’ve got memorial and that’s being changed in London and that’s happening I know that because __ invited. And, so, I’d really appreciate your prayers in all of those areas. Thank you all and I’m praying for you all also. My name is Uma. And, yeah, thank you.

Good morning Daily Audio Bible family this is J from Nashville Tennessee. So, you know, I was bawling my eyes out yesterday, cryin’ out to do God, just pourin’ my heart out in a state of brokenness. And then I wake up this morning and I listen to Daily Audio Bible and Brian reads the Scripture…and I’m paraphrasing here because I can’t get to the exact Scripture because for some reason every time I want to use the reading portion of the app for exhortation it doesn’t work. I know that’s Satan. So, yeah, but anyway, I’m paraphrasing the Scripture and it was the reading on September the 7th, where it says the sacrifices of God in a broken spirit and a contrite heart. I believe that’s what it says, I need to go back and listen to that reading, but anyway, you know, I didn’t even think about that Scripture when I was just on my knees crying and just giving up everything to God. You know, but when we say we give up, sometimes we don’t think about giving up to God. I just gave up. I just god if you don’t do this it’s not gonna happen. If You don’t pick up the pieces they’re not going to get picked up. I give up. I’m taking my hands out of this and I give up. Because it’s just not gonna work with my grubby hands all over. So, I just wanted to say that for anybody who’s going to the same thing and I wanted to let you know that I love you and I wanted you to make today an awesome day. I love you and I will talk to you soon.

Good afternoon, today is September 7th, 2018. This is Chandra calling from Maryland. I have had one of these weeks. And I feel like a heavy load is lifted every time I call the prayer line even though I know I have people praying for me whether or not I call in. It just feels relaxing especially when Brian says that we don’t have to carry everything. Long story short, please keep me in prayer. I don’t know what the heck I have been fighting spiritually. I know that it’s not me per se but it was bad to the point where this morning I was just stood up and had it and was like, you know what God, I was close to saying, you know what God, my life insurance is paid in full. You do what You want. I’m sick and tired of this. But please keep me in prayer. And as soon as I get off the line I’m going to get caught up with my DAB broadcast. I haven’t listened a few days. I love you guys and everyone take care and just be strong the Lord. Bye.

Hello this is Bradford calling into the Daily Audio Bible in Okinawa Japan. I’m a Christian missionary teacher originally from the Toronto area and I’m calling to encourage Alan from Sydney. I know it’s been over a month since I heard his concern on Daily Audio Bible, the fact that they’ve been praying and waiting for child and it hasn’t happened for them. I wanted to share my testimony and I’m sorry it’s taken so long to call in brother. My wife and I have been married 13 years and we have a son. He is 10 now and when he was two years old we thought, let’s have another child, and we looked forward to that, we started praying for that. And five years later we were still praying because we had not yet had a second child. And over those five years we went through everything. Why is this happening? Is our prayer being answered? Are we being heard? We saw doctors and they all said there is no reason this shouldn’t be happening. But in the meantime we got signed up as foster parents here in Japan. And three years ago they placed a little girl thus. And my kids are the joy of my life. And she’s been with us and they expect that she’ll be with us until she’s 18. As soon as she was placed with us we heard the witness of the Holy Spirit saying your prayer’s been answered and this is the daughter that you were praying for. So, I don’t know what the answer is that God has in mind for you Alan but I do know there is one and God wants you and your wife to be happy and He wants to bless you. And whatever the answer is it will come. We just need to trust in Him. And know that I’ve been praying for you and I’m sure others have been as well. You have my prayers. God bless.

Sometimes I stop and reflect on the insanity of my past
and how far You’ve brought me over the chasm that’s so vast
and my soul cries of hallelujah for the die has been cast
and just like Martin Luther King Junior used to say, thank God Almighty I’m free at last
but to whom much is given much will be asked
so I know that there’s a great responsibility that comes with my past
many who were first now find themselves last
So, strengthen me Father to be up to the task
I know I have a story that supposed to get told
about how you’ve given me so many victories over so many dangers untold
how you shielded me from a young age and allowed me now to get old
strengthen me Father make my speech bold
because all that I have is due only to the
the air that I know breathe and everything around me that I see
lengthen the future eternally with the
in life right life more abundantly
thank you my Father for all that you do
for giving me this chance to live life anew
please keep my thoughts faithful, humble and true
and may all of my thoughts be always acceptable unto You

blindtony1016@gmail.com. I like to give a shout out to Slave of Jesus. Haven’t heard from ya lately but know that your thought of and loved and in my prayers every day. Goff, haven’t heard from you in a long time. Hope you’re still there brother. And, once again Brian, thank you for this wonderful podcast for God’s Holy Spirit to flow. Keep it flowin’ y’all. All right. Bye-bye.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Wednesday September 12, 2018 (NIV)

Isaiah 10-11

10 Woe(A) to those who make unjust laws,
to those who issue oppressive decrees,(B)
to deprive(C) the poor of their rights
and withhold justice from the oppressed of my people,(D)
making widows their prey
and robbing the fatherless.(E)
What will you do on the day of reckoning,(F)
when disaster(G) comes from afar?
To whom will you run for help?(H)
Where will you leave your riches?
Nothing will remain but to cringe among the captives(I)
or fall among the slain.(J)

Yet for all this, his anger is not turned away,(K)
his hand is still upraised.

God’s Judgment on Assyria

“Woe(L) to the Assyrian,(M) the rod(N) of my anger,
in whose hand is the club(O) of my wrath!(P)
I send him against a godless(Q) nation,
I dispatch(R) him against a people who anger me,(S)
to seize loot and snatch plunder,(T)
and to trample(U) them down like mud in the streets.
But this is not what he intends,(V)
this is not what he has in mind;
his purpose is to destroy,
to put an end to many nations.
‘Are not my commanders(W) all kings?’ he says.
‘Has not Kalno(X) fared like Carchemish?(Y)
Is not Hamath(Z) like Arpad,(AA)
and Samaria(AB) like Damascus?(AC)
10 As my hand seized the kingdoms of the idols,(AD)
kingdoms whose images excelled those of Jerusalem and Samaria—
11 shall I not deal with Jerusalem and her images
as I dealt with Samaria and her idols?(AE)’”

12 When the Lord has finished all his work(AF) against Mount Zion(AG) and Jerusalem, he will say, “I will punish the king of Assyria(AH) for the willful pride(AI) of his heart and the haughty look(AJ) in his eyes. 13 For he says:

“‘By the strength of my hand(AK) I have done this,(AL)
and by my wisdom, because I have understanding.
I removed the boundaries of nations,
I plundered their treasures;(AM)
like a mighty one I subdued[a] their kings.(AN)
14 As one reaches into a nest,(AO)
so my hand reached for the wealth(AP) of the nations;
as people gather abandoned eggs,
so I gathered all the countries;(AQ)
not one flapped a wing,
or opened its mouth to chirp.(AR)’”

15 Does the ax raise itself above the person who swings it,
or the saw boast against the one who uses it?(AS)
As if a rod were to wield the person who lifts it up,
or a club(AT) brandish the one who is not wood!
16 Therefore, the Lord, the Lord Almighty,
will send a wasting disease(AU) upon his sturdy warriors;(AV)
under his pomp(AW) a fire(AX) will be kindled
like a blazing flame.
17 The Light of Israel will become a fire,(AY)
their Holy One(AZ) a flame;
in a single day it will burn and consume
his thorns(BA) and his briers.(BB)
18 The splendor of his forests(BC) and fertile fields
it will completely destroy,(BD)
as when a sick person wastes away.
19 And the remaining trees of his forests(BE) will be so few(BF)
that a child could write them down.

The Remnant of Israel

20 In that day(BG) the remnant of Israel,
the survivors(BH) of Jacob,
will no longer rely(BI) on him
who struck them down(BJ)
but will truly rely(BK) on the Lord,
the Holy One of Israel.(BL)
21 A remnant(BM) will return,[b](BN) a remnant of Jacob
will return to the Mighty God.(BO)
22 Though your people be like the sand(BP) by the sea, Israel,
only a remnant will return.(BQ)
Destruction has been decreed,(BR)
overwhelming and righteous.
23 The Lord, the Lord Almighty, will carry out
the destruction decreed(BS) upon the whole land.(BT)

24 Therefore this is what the Lord, the Lord Almighty, says:

“My people who live in Zion,(BU)
do not be afraid(BV) of the Assyrians,
who beat(BW) you with a rod(BX)
and lift up a club against you, as Egypt did.
25 Very soon(BY) my anger against you will end
and my wrath(BZ) will be directed to their destruction.(CA)

26 The Lord Almighty will lash(CB) them with a whip,
as when he struck down Midian(CC) at the rock of Oreb;
and he will raise his staff(CD) over the waters,(CE)
as he did in Egypt.
27 In that day(CF) their burden(CG) will be lifted from your shoulders,
their yoke(CH) from your neck;(CI)
the yoke(CJ) will be broken
because you have grown so fat.[c]

28 They enter Aiath;
they pass through Migron;(CK)
they store supplies(CL) at Mikmash.(CM)
29 They go over the pass, and say,
“We will camp overnight at Geba.(CN)
Ramah(CO) trembles;
Gibeah(CP) of Saul flees.(CQ)
30 Cry out, Daughter Gallim!(CR)
Listen, Laishah!
Poor Anathoth!(CS)
31 Madmenah is in flight;
the people of Gebim take cover.
32 This day they will halt at Nob;(CT)
they will shake their fist(CU)
at the mount of Daughter Zion,(CV)
at the hill of Jerusalem.

33 See, the Lord, the Lord Almighty,
will lop off(CW) the boughs with great power.
The lofty trees will be felled,(CX)
the tall(CY) ones will be brought low.(CZ)
34 He will cut down(DA) the forest thickets with an ax;
Lebanon(DB) will fall before the Mighty One.(DC)

The Branch From Jesse

11 A shoot(DD) will come up from the stump(DE) of Jesse;(DF)
from his roots a Branch(DG) will bear fruit.(DH)
The Spirit(DI) of the Lord will rest on him—
the Spirit of wisdom(DJ) and of understanding,
the Spirit of counsel and of might,(DK)
the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the Lord
and he will delight in the fear(DL) of the Lord.

He will not judge by what he sees with his eyes,(DM)
or decide by what he hears with his ears;(DN)
but with righteousness(DO) he will judge the needy,(DP)
with justice(DQ) he will give decisions for the poor(DR) of the earth.
He will strike(DS) the earth with the rod of his mouth;(DT)
with the breath(DU) of his lips he will slay the wicked.(DV)
Righteousness will be his belt(DW)
and faithfulness(DX) the sash around his waist.(DY)

The wolf will live with the lamb,(DZ)
the leopard will lie down with the goat,
the calf and the lion and the yearling[d] together;
and a little child will lead them.
The cow will feed with the bear,
their young will lie down together,
and the lion will eat straw like the ox.(EA)
The infant(EB) will play near the cobra’s den,
and the young child will put its hand into the viper’s(EC) nest.
They will neither harm nor destroy(ED)
on all my holy mountain,(EE)
for the earth(EF) will be filled with the knowledge(EG) of the Lord
as the waters cover the sea.

10 In that day(EH) the Root of Jesse(EI) will stand as a banner(EJ) for the peoples; the nations(EK) will rally to him,(EL) and his resting place(EM) will be glorious.(EN) 11 In that day(EO) the Lord will reach out his hand a second time to reclaim the surviving remnant(EP) of his people from Assyria,(EQ) from Lower Egypt, from Upper Egypt,(ER) from Cush,[e](ES) from Elam,(ET) from Babylonia,[f] from Hamath(EU) and from the islands(EV) of the Mediterranean.(EW)

12 He will raise a banner(EX) for the nations
and gather(EY) the exiles of Israel;(EZ)
he will assemble the scattered people(FA) of Judah
from the four quarters of the earth.(FB)
13 Ephraim’s jealousy will vanish,
and Judah’s enemies[g] will be destroyed;
Ephraim will not be jealous of Judah,
nor Judah hostile toward Ephraim.(FC)
14 They will swoop down on the slopes of Philistia(FD) to the west;
together they will plunder the people to the east.(FE)
They will subdue Edom(FF) and Moab,(FG)
and the Ammonites(FH) will be subject to them.(FI)
15 The Lord will dry up(FJ)
the gulf of the Egyptian sea;
with a scorching wind(FK) he will sweep his hand(FL)
over the Euphrates River.(FM)
He will break it up into seven streams
so that anyone can cross over in sandals.(FN)
16 There will be a highway(FO) for the remnant(FP) of his people
that is left from Assyria,(FQ)
as there was for Israel
when they came up from Egypt.(FR)

2 Corinthians 12:11-21

Paul’s Concern for the Corinthians

11 I have made a fool of myself,(A) but you drove me to it. I ought to have been commended by you, for I am not in the least inferior to the “super-apostles,”[a](B) even though I am nothing.(C) 12 I persevered in demonstrating among you the marks of a true apostle, including signs, wonders and miracles.(D) 13 How were you inferior to the other churches, except that I was never a burden to you?(E) Forgive me this wrong!(F)

14 Now I am ready to visit you for the third time,(G) and I will not be a burden to you, because what I want is not your possessions but you. After all, children should not have to save up for their parents,(H) but parents for their children.(I) 15 So I will very gladly spend for you everything I have and expend myself as well.(J) If I love you more,(K) will you love me less? 16 Be that as it may, I have not been a burden to you.(L) Yet, crafty fellow that I am, I caught you by trickery! 17 Did I exploit you through any of the men I sent to you? 18 I urged(M) Titus(N) to go to you and I sent our brother(O) with him. Titus did not exploit you, did he? Did we not walk in the same footsteps by the same Spirit?

19 Have you been thinking all along that we have been defending ourselves to you? We have been speaking in the sight of God(P) as those in Christ; and everything we do, dear friends,(Q) is for your strengthening.(R) 20 For I am afraid that when I come(S) I may not find you as I want you to be, and you may not find me as you want me to be.(T) I fear that there may be discord,(U) jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition,(V) slander,(W) gossip,(X) arrogance(Y) and disorder.(Z) 21 I am afraid that when I come again my God will humble me before you, and I will be grieved(AA) over many who have sinned earlier(AB) and have not repented of the impurity, sexual sin and debauchery(AC) in which they have indulged.

Psalm 56

Psalm 56[a]

For the director of music. To the tune of “A Dove on Distant Oaks.” Of David. A miktam.[b] When the Philistines had seized him in Gath.

Be merciful to me,(A) my God,
for my enemies are in hot pursuit;(B)
all day long they press their attack.(C)
My adversaries pursue me all day long;(D)
in their pride many are attacking me.(E)

When I am afraid,(F) I put my trust in you.(G)
In God, whose word I praise—(H)
in God I trust and am not afraid.(I)
What can mere mortals do to me?(J)

All day long they twist my words;(K)
all their schemes are for my ruin.
They conspire,(L) they lurk,
they watch my steps,(M)
hoping to take my life.(N)
Because of their wickedness do not[c] let them escape;(O)
in your anger, God, bring the nations down.(P)

Record my misery;
list my tears on your scroll[d](Q)
are they not in your record?(R)
Then my enemies will turn back(S)
when I call for help.(T)
By this I will know that God is for me.(U)

10 In God, whose word I praise,
in the Lord, whose word I praise—
11 in God I trust and am not afraid.
What can man do to me?

12 I am under vows(V) to you, my God;
I will present my thank offerings to you.
13 For you have delivered me from death(W)
and my feet from stumbling,
that I may walk before God
in the light of life.(X)

Isaiah 8:1-9:21, 2 Corinthians 12:1-10, Psalms 55:1-23 , Proverbs 23:4-5

Today is the 11th day of September. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian. It’s a pleasure, it’s an honor and it’s a joy to be here with you today as we take the next step forward in our journey through the Scriptures this year. And we have, you know, long ago crossed the halfway point. So, our steps are definitely taking us through the back half of the Scriptures. And this week we’re reading from the New International Version. We’ll pick up where we left off yesterday in the book of Isaiah. Today Isaiah chapter 8 and 9.

Commentary:

Okay. So, Paul says something that’s often quoted and very famous. Something that we would recognize immediately. When I am weak, then I am strong. We hear it all the time. We probably even say it often. When we’re going through a difficult patch, when hardship has descended upon us for some reason. When we are weak, we are strong. What’s interesting is that sometimes we begin to apply this to any weakness at all. We could have eaten ourselves into diabetes and be walking down the grocery store aisle putting a box of twinkies into our cart saying, when I am weak, He is strong. But sometimes the truth is when we are weak, we are weak and we are blocking His strength from making us strong because we will not surrender whatever it is that’s making us weak. That’s not the posture that Paul is talking about or exhibiting. And so for the last couple of days, Paul’s been boasting, if you want to call it that. He felt like he had to defend himself because of the things that were being said by other people about him that weren’t true. And so it was like a game of playing credentials and he didn’t like it. But at the end of all the boasting, he said, because of the things that I’ve been through and the things that I’ve seen and the things that I’ve heard, I’ve had to deal with personal issues and I’ve asked God to take them away. He described it as a thorn in the flesh. I’ve asked God three times to take some of this away and God said, My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness. Okay, what Paul had just boasted and has been boasting about things that we wouldn’t normally wanna brag about. It’s like who has had the worst time of things? Who has endured the most? And yet, Paul finds this is a glorious thing to surrender to come what may. And put his hope only in God alone for survival at all. This is the boasting and this is the weakness that is being boasted in. And this is the weakness that is made perfect in God’s strength. Very different than not being able to resist the twinkies. And very different than enduring things that we have created ourselves. When we are weak, we are strong only happens when we embrace our weakness and realize at the end of our greatest strength, we are still weak. And when we know this, we can embrace a strength that is way beyond us, allowing us to endure anything as the heroes of the faith have all demonstrated for us, including the Apostle Paul. God’s strength becomes apparent when we realize that our strength is weakness by comparison and we surrender our own strength, we come to the end of ourselves.

Prayer:

And so, Father, we invite You into that cause it’s a constant struggle on one front or another. Because there’s all kinds of issues going on all of the time. And so often we’re trying to figure out how to get Your strength to be an additive to our strength so that we can then navigate and overcome when we’re invited to surrender, understanding that our strength will only ever be weakness compared to Your strength. And Your strength can give us the power to endure anything. Come Holy Spirit, we pray. In Jesus name we ask. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hey everybody. Oh…welcome home. It was so great to see everybody this last weekend. Hey, when I came back, my new partner, I’ll just say JS, JS is my…is my new partner and he is a former military man. He had been terribly, terribly injured when he was across the pond in a Humvee accident that flipped many, many times from an IED and he has extensive injuries but he’s making it, right? So,, he’s not given up and I really admire him but he has confided in me in the last couple of days. He’s like, I’m under attack, I’m under spiritual attack. I believe in God and I study but there are some demons in my past I just can’t get around. And I think that it has a lot to do with that situation, in fact. But, would you guys pray for my friend? He’s having a really hard time because, you know, I just fell like I’m sinking and I’m drowning. So,, I said, look brother, you’re…you’re okay, you’re fighting and as long as you’re still flailing and you’re still breathing your still in the fight, right? So,, pay for my friend JS, alright? I love you guys and pray for me that I can have the right words to help and point him in the right direction. and Lanna Jones, Lanna Jones, my lovely sister, I gave him your book and he’s really, really loving it. So,, you’re not helping me, you’re helping others as well. I love you guys. Have a great day. Bye-bye.

Hi Daily Audio Bible, this is Russ from central Iowa. I just listened to the September 5th prayer line and wanted to lift up Stanley in Maryland dealing with addiction. I offer from Isaiah 42:3 as a encouragement. It says that a bruised reed shall not break and a smoldering wick you will not quench. Brother, again, with addiction, I just offer that in prayer for you, that when you feel bruised or broken or as a smoldering wick you’re not gonna be broken or snuffed out. God is with you. And today, September 6th, we heard in the Psalm that, call me in the day of trouble and I will answer you, Psalm 50. So,, I just offer that prayer as well, that in those moments of addiction that you can call on the Lord and that you’re not alone. My prayers are with you, family, and those dealing with addiction and we’re not bearing each other’s burdens alone but in community here. And, so, I offer that prayer for you and for all those dealing with addiction. And I just lift you up and pray for strength in the Lord. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Hey family this is Dave from Colorado. Today is September 6th,which is a special day for me. Five years ago today is when I gave my life to God and also five years ago today is when my chains of addiction to alcohol and drugs were broken. Before that I pretty much just had a dreary existence, quite honestly and it’s pretty much everything except for my wife, which I was kind of hoping I would lose that to. I just really didn’t have the nerve to take it myself but ever since that day life has just…it gets better every day. It’s almost like every day is Thanksgiving. I praise God every day. And, you know, I still hear calls with people struggling. My suggestion would be…well in my case…my prayers actually weren’t working for me. I wasn’t able to get clean and sober until I got on my knees and gave myself to God, heart, mind, and soul, everything. So,, as soon as I gave everything to God that Holy Spirit came on me and I just knew it was going to work this time. But another…another reason I wanted to call is, for my mother-in-law Rita, she’s been having a lot of medical issues lately. It seems like she’s in the emergency room about once a week. She just really, it’s just like she’s just quit eating and drinking. She’s down to like 70 pounds. I don’t know what’s gonna happen. It’s almost as if she’s lost the will to live…to go on…

Hi Daily Audio Bible Family. This is Nathan from London England. It’s my first time calling. I’ve been listening to Daily Audio Bible for a few years now. So,, first off I just wanted to encourage, I believe the first name was Prosperous from the San Francisco Bay area. I didn’t catch the full name, but just listened to what you said about thinking ahead and I can really identify with that. And something that helps me and might really help you is just find time in your schedule even if it has to be right at the start of your day just be quiet and still. But do it actively. So,, pray in tongues to begin with if you have that gift. And also just invite the Holy Spirit just to kind of fill the room, fill your heart and just make time to be still like it says in Psalm 46, be still and know that I am God. Just, it will really help you stay in the room and raise your hand and obviously the Holy Spirit just wants to affirm you and love on you. I have a prayer request myself. I have a very important appointment next Wednesday the 12th at the US Embassy in London. I’m applying for a US visitor visa. Now there’s a bit of a story behind this but I currently do not have permission to travel to the US. It’s down to some travel I did over 10 years ago where, unfortunately, I was denied entry. They found out that I’ve been doing some cash work when I was on a visa waiver, which is not committed. I was foolish and naïve but unfortunately they may be permanently inadmissible. Fast forward 11 years, I really want to be able to travel to the US. My family lived there. My dad’s going to be 70. So,, just pray for me for favor. Thank you guys.

Isaiah 8-9

Isaiah and His Children as Signs

The Lord said to me, “Take a large scroll(A) and write on it with an ordinary pen: Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz.”[a](B) So I called in Uriah(C) the priest and Zechariah son of Jeberekiah as reliable witnesses(D) for me. Then I made love to the prophetess,(E) and she conceived and gave birth to a son.(F) And the Lord said to me, “Name him Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz.(G) For before the boy knows(H) how to say ‘My father’ or ‘My mother,’ the wealth of Damascus(I) and the plunder of Samaria will be carried off by the king of Assyria.(J)

The Lord spoke to me again:

“Because this people has rejected(K)
the gently flowing waters of Shiloah(L)
and rejoices over Rezin
and the son of Remaliah,(M)
therefore the Lord is about to bring against them
the mighty floodwaters(N) of the Euphrates—
the king of Assyria(O) with all his pomp.(P)
It will overflow all its channels,
run over all its banks(Q)
and sweep on into Judah, swirling over it,(R)
passing through it and reaching up to the neck.
Its outspread wings(S) will cover the breadth of your land,
Immanuel[b]!”(T)

Raise the war cry,[c](U) you nations, and be shattered!(V)
Listen, all you distant lands.
Prepare(W) for battle, and be shattered!
Prepare for battle, and be shattered!
10 Devise your strategy, but it will be thwarted;(X)
propose your plan, but it will not stand,(Y)
for God is with us.[d](Z)

11 This is what the Lord says to me with his strong hand upon me,(AA) warning me not to follow(AB) the way of this people:

12 “Do not call conspiracy(AC)
everything this people calls a conspiracy;
do not fear what they fear,(AD)
and do not dread it.(AE)
13 The Lord Almighty is the one you are to regard as holy,(AF)
he is the one you are to fear,(AG)
he is the one you are to dread.(AH)
14 He will be a holy place;(AI)
for both Israel and Judah he will be
a stone(AJ) that causes people to stumble(AK)
and a rock that makes them fall.(AL)
And for the people of Jerusalem he will be
a trap and a snare.(AM)
15 Many of them will stumble;(AN)
they will fall and be broken,
they will be snared and captured.”

16 Bind up this testimony of warning(AO)
and seal(AP) up God’s instruction among my disciples.
17 I will wait(AQ) for the Lord,
who is hiding(AR) his face from the descendants of Jacob.
I will put my trust in him.(AS)

18 Here am I, and the children the Lord has given me.(AT) We are signs(AU) and symbols(AV) in Israel from the Lord Almighty, who dwells on Mount Zion.(AW)

The Darkness Turns to Light

19 When someone tells you to consult(AX) mediums and spiritists,(AY) who whisper and mutter,(AZ) should not a people inquire(BA) of their God? Why consult the dead on behalf of the living? 20 Consult God’s instruction(BB) and the testimony of warning.(BC) If anyone does not speak according to this word, they have no light(BD) of dawn. 21 Distressed and hungry,(BE) they will roam through the land;(BF) when they are famished, they will become enraged and, looking upward, will curse(BG) their king and their God. 22 Then they will look toward the earth and see only distress and darkness and fearful gloom,(BH) and they will be thrust into utter darkness.(BI)

[e]Nevertheless, there will be no more gloom(BJ) for those who were in distress. In the past he humbled the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali,(BK) but in the future he will honor Galilee of the nations, by the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan—

The people walking in darkness(BL)
have seen a great light;(BM)
on those living in the land of deep darkness(BN)
a light has dawned.(BO)
You have enlarged the nation(BP)
and increased their joy;(BQ)
they rejoice before you
as people rejoice at the harvest,
as warriors rejoice
when dividing the plunder.(BR)
For as in the day of Midian’s defeat,(BS)
you have shattered(BT)
the yoke(BU) that burdens them,
the bar across their shoulders,(BV)
the rod of their oppressor.(BW)
Every warrior’s boot used in battle
and every garment rolled in blood
will be destined for burning,(BX)
will be fuel for the fire.
For to us a child is born,(BY)
to us a son is given,(BZ)
and the government(CA) will be on his shoulders.(CB)
And he will be called
Wonderful Counselor,(CC) Mighty God,(CD)
Everlasting(CE) Father,(CF) Prince of Peace.(CG)
Of the greatness of his government(CH) and peace(CI)
there will be no end.(CJ)
He will reign(CK) on David’s throne
and over his kingdom,
establishing and upholding it
with justice(CL) and righteousness(CM)
from that time on and forever.(CN)
The zeal(CO) of the Lord Almighty
will accomplish this.

The Lord’s Anger Against Israel

The Lord has sent a message(CP) against Jacob;
it will fall on Israel.
All the people will know it—
Ephraim(CQ) and the inhabitants of Samaria(CR)
who say with pride
and arrogance(CS) of heart,
10 “The bricks have fallen down,
but we will rebuild with dressed stone;(CT)
the fig(CU) trees have been felled,
but we will replace them with cedars.(CV)
11 But the Lord has strengthened Rezin’s(CW) foes against them
and has spurred their enemies on.
12 Arameans(CX) from the east and Philistines(CY) from the west
have devoured(CZ) Israel with open mouth.

Yet for all this, his anger(DA) is not turned away,
his hand is still upraised.(DB)

13 But the people have not returned(DC) to him who struck(DD) them,
nor have they sought(DE) the Lord Almighty.
14 So the Lord will cut off from Israel both head and tail,
both palm branch and reed(DF) in a single day;(DG)
15 the elders(DH) and dignitaries(DI) are the head,
the prophets(DJ) who teach lies(DK) are the tail.
16 Those who guide(DL) this people mislead them,
and those who are guided are led astray.(DM)
17 Therefore the Lord will take no pleasure in the young men,(DN)
nor will he pity(DO) the fatherless and widows,
for everyone is ungodly(DP) and wicked,(DQ)
every mouth speaks folly.(DR)

Yet for all this, his anger is not turned away,
his hand is still upraised.(DS)

18 Surely wickedness burns like a fire;(DT)
it consumes briers and thorns,(DU)
it sets the forest thickets ablaze,(DV)
so that it rolls upward in a column of smoke.
19 By the wrath(DW) of the Lord Almighty
the land will be scorched(DX)
and the people will be fuel for the fire;(DY)
they will not spare one another.(DZ)
20 On the right they will devour,
but still be hungry;(EA)
on the left they will eat,(EB)
but not be satisfied.
Each will feed on the flesh of their own offspring[f]:
21 Manasseh will feed on Ephraim, and Ephraim on Manasseh;(EC)
together they will turn against Judah.(ED)

Yet for all this, his anger is not turned away,
his hand is still upraised.(EE)

2 Corinthians 12:1-10

Paul’s Vision and His Thorn

12 I must go on boasting.(A) Although there is nothing to be gained, I will go on to visions and revelations(B) from the Lord. I know a man in Christ(C) who fourteen years ago was caught up(D) to the third heaven.(E) Whether it was in the body or out of the body I do not know—God knows.(F) And I know that this man—whether in the body or apart from the body I do not know, but God knows— was caught up(G) to paradise(H) and heard inexpressible things, things that no one is permitted to tell. I will boast about a man like that, but I will not boast about myself, except about my weaknesses.(I) Even if I should choose to boast,(J) I would not be a fool,(K) because I would be speaking the truth. But I refrain, so no one will think more of me than is warranted by what I do or say, or because of these surpassingly great revelations.(L) Therefore, in order to keep me from becoming conceited, I was given a thorn in my flesh,(M) a messenger of Satan,(N) to torment me. Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me.(O) But he said to me, “My grace(P) is sufficient for you, for my power(Q) is made perfect in weakness.(R)(S) Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. 10 That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight(T) in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships,(U) in persecutions,(V) in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.(W)

Psalm 55

Psalm 55[a]

For the director of music. With stringed instruments. A maskil[b] of David.

Listen to my prayer, O God,
do not ignore my plea;(A)
hear me and answer me.(B)
My thoughts trouble me and I am distraught(C)
because of what my enemy is saying,
because of the threats of the wicked;
for they bring down suffering on me(D)
and assail(E) me in their anger.(F)

My heart is in anguish(G) within me;
the terrors(H) of death have fallen on me.
Fear and trembling(I) have beset me;
horror(J) has overwhelmed me.
I said, “Oh, that I had the wings of a dove!
I would fly away and be at rest.
I would flee far away
and stay in the desert;[c](K)
I would hurry to my place of shelter,(L)
far from the tempest and storm.(M)

Lord, confuse the wicked, confound their words,(N)
for I see violence and strife(O) in the city.(P)
10 Day and night they prowl(Q) about on its walls;
malice and abuse are within it.
11 Destructive forces(R) are at work in the city;
threats and lies(S) never leave its streets.

12 If an enemy were insulting me,
I could endure it;
if a foe were rising against me,
I could hide.
13 But it is you, a man like myself,
my companion, my close friend,(T)
14 with whom I once enjoyed sweet fellowship(U)
at the house of God,(V)
as we walked about
among the worshipers.

15 Let death take my enemies by surprise;(W)
let them go down alive to the realm of the dead,(X)
for evil finds lodging among them.

16 As for me, I call to God,
and the Lord saves me.
17 Evening,(Y) morning(Z) and noon(AA)
I cry out in distress,
and he hears my voice.
18 He rescues me unharmed
from the battle waged against me,
even though many oppose me.
19 God, who is enthroned from of old,(AB)
who does not change—
he will hear(AC) them and humble them,
because they have no fear of God.(AD)

20 My companion attacks his friends;(AE)
he violates his covenant.(AF)
21 His talk is smooth as butter,(AG)
yet war is in his heart;
his words are more soothing than oil,(AH)
yet they are drawn swords.(AI)

22 Cast your cares on the Lord
and he will sustain you;(AJ)
he will never let
the righteous be shaken.(AK)
23 But you, God, will bring down the wicked
into the pit(AL) of decay;
the bloodthirsty and deceitful(AM)
will not live out half their days.(AN)

But as for me, I trust in you.(AO)

Do not wear yourself out to get rich;
do not trust your own cleverness.
Cast but a glance at riches, and they are gone,(A)
