1 Kings 22:1-53, Acts 13:16-41, Psalms 138:1-8, Proverbs 17:17-18

Today is the 20th day of June, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian, it’s great to be here with you today, it’s great to be here with you any day, it’s great to be here with you every day as we gather around the Global Campfire and find a place, exhale, relax, take the next step forward together. That next step certainly leads us back into the book of first Kings, where we are getting to know the kings of Israel in the North and the kings of Judah in the south, now that, now that the children of Israel have broken apart into two different nations. We are also dealing with different prophets in this time, Elisha, in particular, and we’ve met Elisha and will get to know Elisha a lot better as we continue the journey but for today, first Kings chapter 22.

Commentary:

Okay so, we have a fascinating story going on in the book of first kings or, we had, because King Ahab ended up dying. We had an interesting story in the book of first Kings today. So, the king of Israel, the king in the North, his name was Ahab and the king of Judah, the king in the South was King Jehoshaphat and they were visiting with one another and Ahab, the king of Israel was just kind of musing about this city, Ramoth Gilead, that has been taken from him and it actually belongs to them and they need to go and attack and take it back. So, he asks Judah’s King Jehoshaphat, will you go into battle with me to take back the city of Ramoth Gilead. Jehoshaphat agrees, like that they’re one people, that they’re brothers, that they will go as one that they’ll do this, but Jehoshaphat, being the king of Judah, were the temple of God is in the city of Jerusalem, inquires of Israel’s King Ahab whether or not there is a prophet of the Lord in the land that they can inquire of the Lord about this, about this plan that they are hatching to go to war to take back a city. So, these 400 prophets of the Lord are brought to prophesy and they begin to prophesy in the name of the Lord, that success is in front of them, that they should go into battle at once, they will be victorious, God is with them, and they will gore the enemy. What’s interesting is that, Jehoshaphat hears the prophets of the Lord, Jehoshaphat is a God-fearing man, the kingdom of Judah, worships at the temple of God in Jerusalem and for some reason he’s not fully buying it, because he will re-inquires, like is there anyone else that’s a prophet of the Lord. And that’s actually a little bit of a clue to what comes next. But in the end, there is one other person, the prophet of the Lord named Micaiah but Ahab doesn’t like Micaiah because every time Micaiah prophesies in the name of the Lord, it’s something bad against Ahab. So, he doesn’t like him, but they send for him. He is a prophet of Yahweh, the Lord and so they go get him and they tell him, all the other prophets are saying this is a good idea, God is in, and that we should go into battle, so make sure that you hear the same thing from God when you come and give the same message. Micaiah comes and he kind of pretends to give the same message, kind of sarcastically in some sort of way, or maybe quietly, he does it in a way that Israel’s King, King Ahab knows that he’s not actually giving what he believes the words of the Lord are and then Micaiah actually gives the words that he had heard from the Lord, which is essentially, if you going to battle you’ll be killed, and there will be no Shephard in Israel and everybody will flee back to their own home. So, Ahab says to Jehoshaphat, you see what I told you. This guy never says anything good about me. But Micaiah’s contrary prophecy to the 400 prophets of God, then sort of causes a showdown among the prophets. So, a prophet, Zedekiah, son of Kenaanah, as the Bible tells us, walks up and smacks Micaiah right across the face and says which way did the spirit of God go when he left me to then come and talk to you. Wow! I mean, that’s like one prophet beating another prophet, both of the same God, both hearing two different things that they believe that the Lord is saying. And Micaiah had told about why there was a discrepancy in what was being said among the prophets, why they had divergent messages, and he tells a story about a spirit being sent from God to deceive the prophets. What is that about? It’s actually a passage that has been wrestled with for a very, very, very long time because we need typically to make the theology work so that we have a view of a perfect God that would never do such a thing. One good scholarly supported view of this is that those 400 prophets prophesying in the name of the Lord, were not actually hearing from the Lord. So, in this instance, a distinction was made that Micaiah was actually speaking with the mouth or with the words that God had put in his mouth. Whereas Ahab’s 400 other prophets of the Lord, were never really listening to the Lord in the first place and were prophesying falsely so that a distinction was made so that the king had very, he had both options, but he had a very, very clear warning from God himself through the prophet Micaiah about the battle he was intending to go into and that it was going to cost him dearly. It was going to cost his life. Of course, as the story goes, as we know, since we just read it, Ahab decides to go into battle, incarcerates Micaiah until he gets back, Micaiah says if you come back, I haven’t spoken in the name of the Lord, I haven’t spoken truly. Of course, he doesn’t come back, which affirms Micaiah as having heard directly from God and having delivered a warning that would’ve saved the king’s life. So, we look at Micaiah, a prophet of God, who seems to keep to himself to some degree, isn’t part of the troop of the 400 prophets of God anyway, and he gets summoned to speak on behalf of the Lord and the Lord gives him the message to speak and he goes and speaks in the name of the Lord the true message that God has given him to speak and only bad things happen to him, right, like he gets rejected, he gets smacked by the other prophets, he gets incarcerated, he’s limited to food and water or bread and water to eat, but he is still sent to speak the truth, even though the truth is rejected and it causes hardship for the prophet. Sometimes we find ourselves in similar circumstances, where all kinds of advice is being given in the situation to maybe somebody that we love or somebody we care about or somebody that we know, or for that matter just a set of circumstances that involve us, advice is being given and it and it gives us a check in our spirit and were sitting there, sensing that there needs to be some kind of alternative to this advice. There needs to be at least the opportunity for the person who’s making the decision to be clear on what’s going on here and we’re in that same kind of situation where we can speak the truth, humbly and offer it, which may be the only warning that the person ever gets. But we find ourselves may be then seemingly opposing those who have given other opposite advice, maybe even in the name of the Lord. Super, awkward position to be in, that’s what we’re seeing happen with Micaiah today. And Micaiah obeyed God and did what he was told to do, even though it wasn’t going to be easy. But there are times we find ourselves in situations where we may be the only one that can speak truth into the situation and if we sense that God is leading us, then the lesson here is that we must obey God, even if it’s not easy. Which is a big deal, because so much of our lives are lived in such a way that we believe if we sacrifice and obey God, then his response will be only blessing and good, like it’s a payback. Like, if we do this, then he will do that, as if our relation is a transaction, we obey, He blesses. We obey, He blesses. Sometimes He invites us to obey Him and trust Him because it’s about more than just us and we may have to step into something hard sometimes. What the lesson teaches us is that we certainly better be sure about what God is telling us to say and then once we are, we better say what God is telling us to say, even if it’s difficult. But regardless of whether we’re heeded or not, we’ve released the information, it’s out there, the person was warned. So, we become God’s mercy in that moment, even if it’s not accepted. Plenty to think about there as we think about the circumstances and intertwining of our lives and the different kinds of people that we have to work alongside and with, each and every day.

Prayer:

So, Father, we see this, we see what unfolded before us today and as we think about it, it’s impossible to navigate a situation like this without the power of Your Holy Spirit leading and directing us. And it’s interesting, that so long ago all of these thousands of years ago, we can look back and see that people who believe they are hearing from You, hear different things and offer contradictory advice. If we feel like we need to say something because You are leading us to say something, then Holy Spirit, speak to us clearly, clearly enough that we know that if we step into the situation, it may not be easy, but we are convicted, You are sending us to speak. Lead us into all truth, we are hanging onto that hope, that is a promise and that is what we seek to walk on the pathway of truth, Holy Spirit, we pray in the name of Jesus, we ask. Amen.

Prayer and Encouragements:

Hello DAB family, this is Ruby Rivera in Minnesota and I’m calling in response to the gentleman you called on June 15th. He is struggling to stay in the race and my call is just to encourage you to stay in the race. A quick story about two half marathons that I ran. The first one was phenomenal. The weather was absolutely miserable. It was rainy. It was call, only about 40° but I was running the race for someone else, beside me and the energy from the crowd was phenomenal. It was, it poured into my experience of continuing, they were encouraging. The second race was not fun. It was, I ran alone. The weather was fine, it was cloudy, so it wasn’t too hot and it wasn’t too cold, so it was a comfortable temperature. But the crown was far more distant. They were cheering on but it didn’t have the same energy and they felt more like spectators, than encouragers. So, for you, I am saying, stay in the race and keep calling in to DAB family, because you are not alone. And we are here to cheer you on so stay in the race. May the Lord bless you and keep you, may the Lord make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you. May the Lord turn His face toward you and give you peace.

Hello DAB family, this is Voice of the Turtle and I’m calling, it is June 15th. And the last couple of days I’ve heard prayer requests about brothers who seem as if they are at the end of their rope, especially the brother from today, he didn’t give his name. And also yesterday, I believe the brother was Stephen Leiland but I want to go ahead and pray and give them encouragement. So, Holy Spirit, as we come before you as a community, I pray for these brothers. I pray personally Abbah, that You will manifest Your presence within them. Holy Spirit, You who live on the inside of us, especially these our brothers, give them a tangible visitation of Your presence. Let them know that they are not alone, let them know that You have not forsaken them. And in the case of my brother from today, I encourage you in the same way that Jesus encouraged Peter on the night that he betrayed Him. I pray for you, that your faith fail not, and once you have recovered, strengthen your brothers. Stephen Leiland, this prayer is also for you, I pray that your faith, fail not. And Father, we just simply ask that You will be God to them. Supply their need, be in their mist, let them know that they are not alone. And help us to continue to bare one of those burdens and so fulfill Your law, the law of love, which is in Jesus. We bless You, we honor You, and we thank You. And in Jesus name we pray. Amen. Brothers, stay encouraged. We’re looking forward to your praise report. Be blessed.

Good morning, this is Dani from Southern Oregon. Gosh, you know I was on my way to work, and I was late and I was stressed about the day and I’m driving to work and I’m listening to Ezekiel in DAB kids and he accidentally said that Peter went on the rooftop to spray instead of pray and he started giggling, and Jill started giggling and I’m giggling and I just want to thank you guys for not editing that out. I really needed a laugh right at that time and I think it just changed my entire attitude for the day. So, I love it, to hear, I love, love hearing Ezekiel read and make mistakes because it’s so human. And I think the kids can relate to that too, so anyway, thanks for not editing that out. That was awesome. Thanks for the laugh you guys. Have a great day, bye.

Hey DAB family, it is Beloved in Boston. I haven’t called in, in a few months, it’s been very crazy over here for us as we have got a house in Florida. We sold our house here and by the end of July, we’ll be moving our family of five, to the Fort Myers area. So, if you could just all be praying for my girls, mainly. Through this process as there’s a lot of loss and grief, and transition and change. So, that’s just a quick plug there. I also wanted to send a quick praise report, this is my first day now, reading the Bible again. How amazing is that. I have finished, as of yesterday, a full year in the Bible for the first time ever in my life. And thanks to the DAB family for this community, and for Brian and his family and team for this podcast. So, anyway, I wanted to praise Jesus for that. And quickly, it’s the end of June 15th, and I just heard a prayer request by a man, who it sounds like is being told that there’s something he has to do to be saved and to be close to Jesus and have a relationship with Him. And so, for that man, I just wanted to speak truth over you, this is a complete lie from the enemy. There is nothing you have to do except surrender into His loving arms and then just chase after Him, pray to Him, worship Him, do the things that out flow from you because God has filled you with so much of His love. All you have to do is say yes and let Him in. It’s that simple, it’s not hard. Love you all.

Hey DABers, it’s your girl Val in Vegas. Happy mid-June, we made it. Hey, we are halfway through this thing, ya’ll keep going man, this has been the best year through the Bible, for me. And it just gets better and it’s better together, you all make it so amazing for me. And thank you. And I want to say a special hello to my guy Micah and to all people that are still feeling any kind of lingering effects to COVID. Or to any kind of respiratory issues, where you’re still feeling sluggish and lethargic and just not fully back to you. I’m right there with you man. But God’s got us baby. We’re gonna keep praying for good health and energy and focus and frequency and the Lord is gonna keep providing it. I love you brother and I love everyone in this community, let’s pray. Lord God, thank You, thank You for the ability to come to You in prayer God. Right now, Lord, we’re praying for health, God. For guidance in what we should do as it relates to our health, Lord. For energy Lord, for frequency God, for You to breath Your breath into us, Lord. God, we want to be better than before we got sick. We’re not just asking to put us back together to where we were. Lord, Your word says that we get double for our trouble. So, Micah, you hold on brother. You’re healing is coming; healing is coming for all of us. And we thank You in Jesus name. And we love You, thank You Lord. Thank You Lord. I’ll see you all next month. I love this community and I love you guys. Hey, make sure you go and tithe, please, please, please, give to this ministry.

1 Kings 22

Micaiah Prophesies Against Ahab(A)

22 For three years there was no war between Aram and Israel. But in the third year Jehoshaphat king of Judah went down to see the king of Israel. The king of Israel had said to his officials, “Don’t you know that Ramoth Gilead(B) belongs to us and yet we are doing nothing to retake it from the king of Aram?”

So he asked Jehoshaphat, “Will you go with me to fight(C) against Ramoth Gilead?”

Jehoshaphat replied to the king of Israel, “I am as you are, my people as your people, my horses as your horses.” But Jehoshaphat also said to the king of Israel, “First seek the counsel(D) of the Lord.”

So the king of Israel brought together the prophets—about four hundred men—and asked them, “Shall I go to war against Ramoth Gilead, or shall I refrain?”

“Go,”(E) they answered, “for the Lord will give it into the king’s hand.”(F)

But Jehoshaphat asked, “Is there no longer a prophet(G) of the Lord here whom we can inquire(H) of?”

The king of Israel answered Jehoshaphat, “There is still one prophet through whom we can inquire of the Lord, but I hate(I) him because he never prophesies anything good(J) about me, but always bad. He is Micaiah son of Imlah.”

“The king should not say such a thing,” Jehoshaphat replied.

So the king of Israel called one of his officials and said, “Bring Micaiah son of Imlah at once.”

10 Dressed in their royal robes, the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat king of Judah were sitting on their thrones at the threshing floor(K) by the entrance of the gate of Samaria, with all the prophets prophesying before them. 11 Now Zedekiah(L) son of Kenaanah had made iron horns(M) and he declared, “This is what the Lord says: ‘With these you will gore the Arameans until they are destroyed.’”

12 All the other prophets were prophesying the same thing. “Attack Ramoth Gilead and be victorious,” they said, “for the Lord will give it into the king’s hand.”

13 The messenger who had gone to summon Micaiah said to him, “Look, the other prophets without exception are predicting success for the king. Let your word agree with theirs, and speak favorably.”(N)

14 But Micaiah said, “As surely as the Lord lives, I can tell him only what the Lord tells me.”(O)

15 When he arrived, the king asked him, “Micaiah, shall we go to war against Ramoth Gilead, or not?”

“Attack and be victorious,” he answered, “for the Lord will give it into the king’s hand.”

16 The king said to him, “How many times must I make you swear to tell me nothing but the truth in the name of the Lord?”

17 Then Micaiah answered, “I saw all Israel scattered(P) on the hills like sheep without a shepherd,(Q) and the Lord said, ‘These people have no master. Let each one go home in peace.’”

18 The king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, “Didn’t I tell you that he never prophesies anything good about me, but only bad?”

19 Micaiah continued, “Therefore hear the word of the Lord: I saw the Lord sitting on his throne(R) with all the multitudes(S) of heaven standing around him on his right and on his left. 20 And the Lord said, ‘Who will entice Ahab into attacking Ramoth Gilead and going to his death there?’

“One suggested this, and another that. 21 Finally, a spirit came forward, stood before the Lord and said, ‘I will entice him.’

22 “‘By what means?’ the Lord asked.

“‘I will go out and be a deceiving(T) spirit in the mouths of all his prophets,’ he said.

“‘You will succeed in enticing him,’ said the Lord. ‘Go and do it.’

23 “So now the Lord has put a deceiving(U) spirit in the mouths of all these prophets(V) of yours. The Lord has decreed disaster(W) for you.”

24 Then Zedekiah(X) son of Kenaanah went up and slapped(Y) Micaiah in the face. “Which way did the spirit from[a] the Lord go when he went from me to speak(Z) to you?” he asked.

25 Micaiah replied, “You will find out on the day you go to hide(AA) in an inner room.”

26 The king of Israel then ordered, “Take Micaiah and send him back to Amon the ruler of the city and to Joash the king’s son 27 and say, ‘This is what the king says: Put this fellow in prison(AB) and give him nothing but bread and water until I return safely.’”

28 Micaiah declared, “If you ever return safely, the Lord has not spoken(AC) through me.” Then he added, “Mark my words, all you people!”

Ahab Killed at Ramoth Gilead(AD)

29 So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat king of Judah went up to Ramoth Gilead. 30 The king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, “I will enter the battle in disguise,(AE) but you wear your royal robes.” So the king of Israel disguised himself and went into battle.

31 Now the king of Aram(AF) had ordered his thirty-two chariot commanders, “Do not fight with anyone, small or great, except the king(AG) of Israel.” 32 When the chariot commanders saw Jehoshaphat, they thought, “Surely this is the king of Israel.” So they turned to attack him, but when Jehoshaphat cried out, 33 the chariot commanders saw that he was not the king of Israel and stopped pursuing him.

34 But someone drew his bow(AH) at random and hit the king of Israel between the sections of his armor. The king told his chariot driver, “Wheel around and get me out of the fighting. I’ve been wounded.” 35 All day long the battle raged, and the king was propped up in his chariot facing the Arameans. The blood from his wound ran onto the floor of the chariot, and that evening he died. 36 As the sun was setting, a cry spread through the army: “Every man to his town. Every man to his land!”(AI)

37 So the king died and was brought to Samaria, and they buried him there. 38 They washed the chariot at a pool in Samaria (where the prostitutes bathed),[b] and the dogs(AJ) licked up his blood, as the word of the Lord had declared.

39 As for the other events of Ahab’s reign, including all he did, the palace he built and adorned with ivory,(AK) and the cities he fortified, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Israel? 40 Ahab rested with his ancestors. And Ahaziah his son succeeded him as king.

Jehoshaphat King of Judah(AL)

41 Jehoshaphat son of Asa became king of Judah in the fourth year of Ahab king of Israel. 42 Jehoshaphat was thirty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem twenty-five years. His mother’s name was Azubah daughter of Shilhi. 43 In everything he followed the ways of his father Asa(AM) and did not stray from them; he did what was right in the eyes of the Lord. The high places,(AN) however, were not removed, and the people continued to offer sacrifices and burn incense there.[c] 44 Jehoshaphat was also at peace with the king of Israel.

45 As for the other events of Jehoshaphat’s reign, the things he achieved and his military exploits, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Judah? 46 He rid the land of the rest of the male shrine prostitutes(AO) who remained there even after the reign of his father Asa. 47 There was then no king(AP) in Edom; a provincial governor ruled.

48 Now Jehoshaphat built a fleet of trading ships[d](AQ) to go to Ophir for gold, but they never set sail—they were wrecked at Ezion Geber.(AR) 49 At that time Ahaziah son of Ahab said to Jehoshaphat, “Let my men sail with yours,” but Jehoshaphat refused.

50 Then Jehoshaphat rested with his ancestors and was buried with them in the city of David his father. And Jehoram his son succeeded him as king.

Ahaziah King of Israel

51 Ahaziah son of Ahab became king of Israel in Samaria in the seventeenth year of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, and he reigned over Israel two years. 52 He did evil(AS) in the eyes of the Lord, because he followed the ways of his father and mother and of Jeroboam son of Nebat, who caused Israel to sin. 53 He served and worshiped Baal(AT) and aroused the anger of the Lord, the God of Israel, just as his father(AU) had done.

Acts 13:16-41

16 Standing up, Paul motioned with his hand(A) and said: “Fellow Israelites and you Gentiles who worship God, listen to me! 17 The God of the people of Israel chose our ancestors; he made the people prosper during their stay in Egypt; with mighty power he led them out of that country;(B) 18 for about forty years he endured their conduct[a](C) in the wilderness;(D) 19 and he overthrew seven nations in Canaan,(E) giving their land to his people(F) as their inheritance.(G) 20 All this took about 450 years.

“After this, God gave them judges(H) until the time of Samuel the prophet.(I) 21 Then the people asked for a king,(J) and he gave them Saul(K) son of Kish, of the tribe of Benjamin,(L) who ruled forty years. 22 After removing Saul,(M) he made David their king.(N) God testified concerning him: ‘I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart;(O) he will do everything I want him to do.’(P)

23 “From this man’s descendants(Q) God has brought to Israel the Savior(R) Jesus,(S) as he promised.(T) 24 Before the coming of Jesus, John preached repentance and baptism to all the people of Israel.(U) 25 As John was completing his work,(V) he said: ‘Who do you suppose I am? I am not the one you are looking for.(W) But there is one coming after me whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.’(X)

26 “Fellow children of Abraham(Y) and you God-fearing Gentiles, it is to us that this message of salvation(Z) has been sent. 27 The people of Jerusalem and their rulers did not recognize Jesus,(AA) yet in condemning him they fulfilled the words of the prophets(AB) that are read every Sabbath. 28 Though they found no proper ground for a death sentence, they asked Pilate to have him executed.(AC) 29 When they had carried out all that was written about him,(AD) they took him down from the cross(AE) and laid him in a tomb.(AF) 30 But God raised him from the dead,(AG) 31 and for many days he was seen by those who had traveled with him from Galilee to Jerusalem.(AH) They are now his witnesses(AI) to our people.

32 “We tell you the good news:(AJ) What God promised our ancestors(AK) 33 he has fulfilled for us, their children, by raising up Jesus.(AL) As it is written in the second Psalm:

“‘You are my son;
today I have become your father.’[b](AM)

34 God raised him from the dead so that he will never be subject to decay. As God has said,

“‘I will give you the holy and sure blessings promised to David.’[c](AN)

35 So it is also stated elsewhere:

“‘You will not let your holy one see decay.’[d](AO)

36 “Now when David had served God’s purpose in his own generation, he fell asleep;(AP) he was buried with his ancestors(AQ) and his body decayed. 37 But the one whom God raised from the dead(AR) did not see decay.

38 “Therefore, my friends, I want you to know that through Jesus the forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you.(AS) 39 Through him everyone who believes(AT) is set free from every sin, a justification you were not able to obtain under the law of Moses.(AU) 40 Take care that what the prophets have said does not happen to you:

41 “‘Look, you scoffers,
wonder and perish,
for I am going to do something in your days
that you would never believe,
even if someone told you.’[e](AV)

1 Kings 20:1-21:29, Acts 12:24-13:15, Ps 137:1-9, Pr 17:16

Today is the 19th day of June welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I’m Brian it’s great to be here with you today. It’s always a special day when we come to the threshold of a brand-new shiny sparkly week out in front of us and just kinda inside remind ourselves yet again His mercies are new every morning. It’s a fresh start. It’s a brand-new week and even though last week may have been filled with any number of chaos’s that happened then. Maybe some of that spills forward, but how we deal with it…well…we’re at the threshold. It’s a new week. It’s a new story to tell. And, so, we just exhale and inhale and keep doing that because that’s what we need to do to stay alive. And another thing that we need to do to stay alive is take the next step forward together in the Scriptures, allowing them to feed us, to feed our Spirit. And, so, we will certainly do what we do every day which is pick up where we left off. We’ll read from the New International Version this week. First Kings chapter 20 and 21.

Prayer:

Father, we love You and we adore You and that is where we begin as we begin this week. We love You. We adore You. Our loyalty is Yours. You have rescued us, and we don’t deserve anything. You have been loyal to us when we were as far away from that as possible, and You have saved our lives and so we honor You. Our hearts gratitude is to You. And we thank You for Your word, this beautiful gift that brings us together each day. And we thank You for the community here. We love one another as we move step-by-step day by day through the Scriptures. And, so, Holy Spirit come into this week. Lead and guide us in each of our individual stories. We are utterly dependent upon You, and we trust You. Lead us by the power of Your Holy Spirit we pray. In the name of Jesus, we ask. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hi DAB family this is Simone calling in from Houston…Simone calling from Houston and calling for the gentleman that called at the end of the broadcast on June 14th asking for prayers for Stephen, Leland, Emy. Oh, I heard your heart, and your call just broke my heart and I just…I want to pray for you. Father God on today we lift up our brother in Christ Lord God. Lord God, we thank You that he even had the courage enough to call in and ask for prayers. Father God, I ask right now in the mighty and matchless name of Jesus that You will pour out Your Holy Spirit on this gentleman Lord God, pour out Your spirit on him Lord God. I thank You right now as I make intercession for this gentleman and as we hold him up and undergird him in prayers in community Lord God, that You’ll make every crooked path straight in his life Lord God. I thank You Lord God that right now supernaturally Father supernaturally You are opening doors and windows and You are making financial provision for this gentleman to do everything that’s court ordered, required, and necessary to do and be the father he needs to be. Lord God, we thank You for provisions because You are Jehovah You are Jehovah Rapha You are Jehovah Rapha, and You are our provider. You are Jehovah Jira, and You provide, You heal, You…You give us everything that we need so we touch and agree because Your word says where two or three are gathered in His name there He is also. So, I touch and agree with this gentleman that all provisions are being made and that You are making every path straight Lord God and that he is covered, and I ask that You would keep his mind in perfect peace as he continues to lean on You and be stayed on You. It’s in Jesus’ mighty name. Praying…

Hello my DAB family I love you so much and appreciate you and this is Chicago Peg and I wanna pray for our some of our fellow DABbers. And Patty previously from Florida now in Tennessee. Dear sweet sister at the time of your prayer request your grandson Noah was only two days old and born with a blood infection. He possibly had a seizure. And I am…I’m sorry he’s in the NICU. And I’m also well familiar with us with my nephew having been in the NICU but by God’s grace has come out of this. And my whole heart as a fellow mom grandma, etc. I’m praying together with you Patty in the healing merciful name of Jesus, praying for complete healing for Noah. Oh, our hearts go up to you Patty. And I’m also praying for Prairie Sky for your depression. You said you have trouble making friends and even looking for a lease and for living. Oh, precious lady I pray that the Lord our God our very present help in time of need. Oh, just call on the name of the Lord. Find your peace and your strength in Him. We are praying for you. Your fellow DABbers are praying for you Prairie Sky and we love you so much. I pray that He will strengthen you in Jesus’ name. Amen, Amen and Amen. Fellow DABbers I love you so much, praying for you. Chicago Peg signing off, breathing in His grace breathing out His praise.

It’s June 15th and I just heard a gentleman who called in and he was stating that the last two years nearly killed him and he’s just struggling to hang on and to finish the race is how he put it. I just want to let him know and pray for him that God would let him know that all he needs to do is to hang on to Jesus, that all he needs to do is to look up because His redemption is there is right there. I just pray that he could see that. I pray that Lord that You would bring someone close to him that would help show him You in the flesh. Lord my heart is just so burdened for him to finish the race and Lord I believe he will because I believe that You’re a powerful God that can oversee this whole situation for this gentleman and help him to be able to see You and know that You are going to care for him, You are going to take care of whatever it is that’s standing in his way, to feel redemptive, and to feel saved, and to feel that You are there Lord God. I just lift him totally up to You and put him in Your hands Lord God, to give him the peace and the strength and the courage that he needs to finish the race and to finish it strongly and that his life would be just a testimony of You there in his presence. I praise You and I thank You for what You’re going to do for this gentleman Lord. I love You all and I love this gentleman too knowing that God is going to be there for him. Amen.

Hi this is Michelle from Boston I’m calling for the final caller on June 15th. You didn’t leave your name but you’re struggling with salvation and the thoughts of salvation at the end, and have you done enough do you feel enough. And I hope to encourage you today because I used to worry about this as well. I used to worry if I had enough faith at the moment that I pass away, is that when I would make it? What if I have faith now and not then? I think after talking with my sister and reading the Bible one thing that stands out to me is that I have no role in my salvation besides surrendering to God. I used to think that I had to have faith and like I had to feel saved in order to be saved. And that is not the case because faith is a gift from God. Faith is something that I used to think that I had to like, you know, scrunch really hard and try and produce more faith and squeeze it out of me, but faith itself is this gift from God. We cannot contribute to one iota to our own salvation.

Hello DAB fan this is Joyce from Virginia today is June 15th and the very last prayer request played on today’s reading was from a young man who is really struggling and says that people are telling him that if he doesn’t hold on that he will not be able to finish well and basically won’t be saved. And just wanted to read you a couple of verses from John 10 my friend because we don’t have to hold on to Jesus. Jesus is holding on to us. So, Jesus says in verse 27, “my sheep hear my voice and I know them. They follow me. I give them life that lasts forever. They will never be punished.” And here’s the key part. “No one is able to take them out of my hand. My father who is greater than all gave them to me. No one is able to take them out of my Father’s hand. My father and I are one. So, friend, be encouraged. The Lord will get you through this hard time and Ge is holding you in his hands. Bye-bye.

1 Kings 20-21

Ben-Hadad Attacks Samaria

20 Now Ben-Hadad(A) king of Aram mustered his entire army. Accompanied by thirty-two kings with their horses and chariots, he went up and besieged Samaria(B) and attacked it. He sent messengers into the city to Ahab king of Israel, saying, “This is what Ben-Hadad says: ‘Your silver and gold are mine, and the best of your wives and children are mine.’”

The king of Israel answered, “Just as you say, my lord the king. I and all I have are yours.”

The messengers came again and said, “This is what Ben-Hadad says: ‘I sent to demand your silver and gold, your wives and your children. But about this time tomorrow I am going to send my officials to search your palace and the houses of your officials. They will seize everything you value and carry it away.’”

The king of Israel summoned all the elders(C) of the land and said to them, “See how this man is looking for trouble!(D) When he sent for my wives and my children, my silver and my gold, I did not refuse him.”

The elders and the people all answered, “Don’t listen to him or agree to his demands.”

So he replied to Ben-Hadad’s messengers, “Tell my lord the king, ‘Your servant will do all you demanded the first time, but this demand I cannot meet.’” They left and took the answer back to Ben-Hadad.

10 Then Ben-Hadad sent another message to Ahab: “May the gods deal with me, be it ever so severely, if enough dust(E) remains in Samaria to give each of my men a handful.”

11 The king of Israel answered, “Tell him: ‘One who puts on his armor should not boast(F) like one who takes it off.’”

12 Ben-Hadad heard this message while he and the kings were drinking(G) in their tents,[a] and he ordered his men: “Prepare to attack.” So they prepared to attack the city.

Ahab Defeats Ben-Hadad

13 Meanwhile a prophet(H) came to Ahab king of Israel and announced, “This is what the Lord says: ‘Do you see this vast army? I will give it into your hand today, and then you will know(I) that I am the Lord.’”

14 “But who will do this?” asked Ahab.

The prophet replied, “This is what the Lord says: ‘The junior officers under the provincial commanders will do it.’”

“And who will start(J) the battle?” he asked.

The prophet answered, “You will.”

15 So Ahab summoned the 232 junior officers under the provincial commanders. Then he assembled the rest of the Israelites, 7,000 in all. 16 They set out at noon while Ben-Hadad and the 32 kings allied with him were in their tents getting drunk.(K) 17 The junior officers under the provincial commanders went out first.

Now Ben-Hadad had dispatched scouts, who reported, “Men are advancing from Samaria.”

18 He said, “If they have come out for peace, take them alive; if they have come out for war, take them alive.”

19 The junior officers under the provincial commanders marched out of the city with the army behind them 20 and each one struck down his opponent. At that, the Arameans fled, with the Israelites in pursuit. But Ben-Hadad king of Aram escaped on horseback with some of his horsemen. 21 The king of Israel advanced and overpowered the horses and chariots and inflicted heavy losses on the Arameans.

22 Afterward, the prophet(L) came to the king of Israel and said, “Strengthen your position and see what must be done, because next spring(M) the king of Aram will attack you again.”

23 Meanwhile, the officials of the king of Aram advised him, “Their gods are gods(N) of the hills. That is why they were too strong for us. But if we fight them on the plains, surely we will be stronger than they. 24 Do this: Remove all the kings from their commands and replace them with other officers. 25 You must also raise an army like the one you lost—horse for horse and chariot for chariot—so we can fight Israel on the plains. Then surely we will be stronger than they.” He agreed with them and acted accordingly.

26 The next spring(O) Ben-Hadad mustered the Arameans and went up to Aphek(P) to fight against Israel. 27 When the Israelites were also mustered and given provisions, they marched out to meet them. The Israelites camped opposite them like two small flocks of goats, while the Arameans covered the countryside.(Q)

28 The man of God came up and told the king of Israel, “This is what the Lord says: ‘Because the Arameans think the Lord is a god of the hills and not a god(R) of the valleys, I will deliver this vast army into your hands, and you will know(S) that I am the Lord.’”

29 For seven days they camped opposite each other, and on the seventh day the battle was joined. The Israelites inflicted a hundred thousand casualties on the Aramean foot soldiers in one day. 30 The rest of them escaped to the city of Aphek,(T) where the wall collapsed(U) on twenty-seven thousand of them. And Ben-Hadad fled to the city and hid(V) in an inner room.

31 His officials said to him, “Look, we have heard that the kings of Israel are merciful.(W) Let us go to the king of Israel with sackcloth(X) around our waists and ropes around our heads. Perhaps he will spare your life.”

32 Wearing sackcloth around their waists and ropes around their heads, they went to the king of Israel and said, “Your servant Ben-Hadad says: ‘Please let me live.’”

The king answered, “Is he still alive? He is my brother.”

33 The men took this as a good sign and were quick to pick up his word. “Yes, your brother Ben-Hadad!” they said.

“Go and get him,” the king said. When Ben-Hadad came out, Ahab had him come up into his chariot.

34 “I will return the cities(Y) my father took from your father,” Ben-Hadad(Z) offered. “You may set up your own market areas(AA) in Damascus,(AB) as my father did in Samaria.”

Ahab said, “On the basis of a treaty(AC) I will set you free.” So he made a treaty with him, and let him go.

A Prophet Condemns Ahab

35 By the word of the Lord one of the company of the prophets(AD) said to his companion, “Strike me with your weapon,” but he refused.(AE)

36 So the prophet said, “Because you have not obeyed the Lord, as soon as you leave me a lion(AF) will kill you.” And after the man went away, a lion found him and killed him.

37 The prophet found another man and said, “Strike me, please.” So the man struck him and wounded him. 38 Then the prophet went and stood by the road waiting for the king. He disguised himself with his headband down over his eyes. 39 As the king passed by, the prophet called out to him, “Your servant went into the thick of the battle, and someone came to me with a captive and said, ‘Guard this man. If he is missing, it will be your life for his life,(AG) or you must pay a talent[b] of silver.’ 40 While your servant was busy here and there, the man disappeared.”

“That is your sentence,”(AH) the king of Israel said. “You have pronounced it yourself.”

41 Then the prophet quickly removed the headband from his eyes, and the king of Israel recognized him as one of the prophets. 42 He said to the king, “This is what the Lord says: ‘You(AI) have set free a man I had determined should die.[c](AJ) Therefore it is your life for his life,(AK) your people for his people.’” 43 Sullen and angry,(AL) the king of Israel went to his palace in Samaria.

Naboth’s Vineyard

21 Some time later there was an incident involving a vineyard belonging to Naboth(AM) the Jezreelite. The vineyard was in Jezreel,(AN) close to the palace of Ahab king of Samaria. Ahab said to Naboth, “Let me have your vineyard to use for a vegetable garden, since it is close to my palace. In exchange I will give you a better vineyard or, if you prefer, I will pay you whatever it is worth.”

But Naboth replied, “The Lord forbid that I should give you the inheritance(AO) of my ancestors.”

So Ahab went home, sullen and angry(AP) because Naboth the Jezreelite had said, “I will not give you the inheritance of my ancestors.” He lay on his bed sulking and refused(AQ) to eat.

His wife Jezebel came in and asked him, “Why are you so sullen? Why won’t you eat?”

He answered her, “Because I said to Naboth the Jezreelite, ‘Sell me your vineyard; or if you prefer, I will give you another vineyard in its place.’ But he said, ‘I will not give you my vineyard.’”

Jezebel his wife said, “Is this how you act as king over Israel? Get up and eat! Cheer up. I’ll get you the vineyard(AR) of Naboth the Jezreelite.”

So she wrote letters(AS) in Ahab’s name, placed his seal(AT) on them, and sent them to the elders and nobles who lived in Naboth’s city with him. In those letters she wrote:

“Proclaim a day of fasting and seat Naboth in a prominent place among the people. 10 But seat two scoundrels(AU) opposite him and have them bring charges that he has cursed(AV) both God and the king. Then take him out and stone him to death.”

11 So the elders and nobles who lived in Naboth’s city did as Jezebel directed in the letters she had written to them. 12 They proclaimed a fast(AW) and seated Naboth in a prominent place among the people. 13 Then two scoundrels came and sat opposite him and brought charges against Naboth before the people, saying, “Naboth has cursed both God and the king.” So they took him outside the city and stoned him to death.(AX) 14 Then they sent word to Jezebel: “Naboth has been stoned to death.”

15 As soon as Jezebel heard that Naboth had been stoned to death, she said to Ahab, “Get up and take possession of the vineyard(AY) of Naboth the Jezreelite that he refused to sell you. He is no longer alive, but dead.” 16 When Ahab heard that Naboth was dead, he got up and went down to take possession of Naboth’s vineyard.

17 Then the word of the Lord came to Elijah the Tishbite: 18 “Go down to meet Ahab king of Israel, who rules in Samaria. He is now in Naboth’s vineyard, where he has gone to take possession of it. 19 Say to him, ‘This is what the Lord says: Have you not murdered a man and seized his property?’(AZ) Then say to him, ‘This is what the Lord says: In the place where dogs licked up Naboth’s blood,(BA) dogs(BB) will lick up your blood—yes, yours!’”

20 Ahab said to Elijah, “So you have found me, my enemy!”(BC)

“I have found you,” he answered, “because you have sold(BD) yourself to do evil in the eyes of the Lord. 21 He says, ‘I am going to bring disaster on you. I will wipe out your descendants and cut off from Ahab every last male(BE) in Israel—slave or free.[d](BF) 22 I will make your house(BG) like that of Jeroboam son of Nebat and that of Baasha son of Ahijah, because you have aroused my anger and have caused Israel to sin.’(BH)

23 “And also concerning Jezebel the Lord says: ‘Dogs(BI) will devour Jezebel by the wall of[e] Jezreel.’

24 “Dogs(BJ) will eat those belonging to Ahab who die in the city, and the birds(BK) will feed on those who die in the country.”

25 (There was never(BL) anyone like Ahab, who sold himself to do evil in the eyes of the Lord, urged on by Jezebel his wife. 26 He behaved in the vilest manner by going after idols, like the Amorites(BM) the Lord drove out before Israel.)

27 When Ahab heard these words, he tore his clothes, put on sackcloth(BN) and fasted. He lay in sackcloth and went around meekly.(BO)

28 Then the word of the Lord came to Elijah the Tishbite: 29 “Have you noticed how Ahab has humbled himself before me? Because he has humbled(BP) himself, I will not bring this disaster in his day,(BQ) but I will bring it on his house in the days of his son.”(BR)

Acts 12:24-13:15

24 But the word of God(A) continued to spread and flourish.(B)

Barnabas and Saul Sent Off

25 When Barnabas(C) and Saul had finished their mission,(D) they returned from[a] Jerusalem, taking with them John, also called Mark.(E) 13 Now in the church at Antioch(F) there were prophets(G) and teachers:(H) Barnabas,(I) Simeon called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene,(J) Manaen (who had been brought up with Herod(K) the tetrarch) and Saul. While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said,(L) “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work(M) to which I have called them.”(N) So after they had fasted and prayed, they placed their hands on them(O) and sent them off.(P)

On Cyprus

The two of them, sent on their way by the Holy Spirit,(Q) went down to Seleucia and sailed from there to Cyprus.(R) When they arrived at Salamis, they proclaimed the word of God(S) in the Jewish synagogues.(T) John(U) was with them as their helper.

They traveled through the whole island until they came to Paphos. There they met a Jewish sorcerer(V) and false prophet(W) named Bar-Jesus, who was an attendant of the proconsul,(X) Sergius Paulus. The proconsul, an intelligent man, sent for Barnabas and Saul because he wanted to hear the word of God. But Elymas the sorcerer(Y) (for that is what his name means) opposed them and tried to turn the proconsul(Z) from the faith.(AA) Then Saul, who was also called Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit,(AB) looked straight at Elymas and said, 10 “You are a child of the devil(AC) and an enemy of everything that is right! You are full of all kinds of deceit and trickery. Will you never stop perverting the right ways of the Lord?(AD) 11 Now the hand of the Lord is against you.(AE) You are going to be blind for a time, not even able to see the light of the sun.”(AF)

Immediately mist and darkness came over him, and he groped about, seeking someone to lead him by the hand. 12 When the proconsul(AG) saw what had happened, he believed, for he was amazed at the teaching about the Lord.

In Pisidian Antioch

13 From Paphos,(AH) Paul and his companions sailed to Perga in Pamphylia,(AI) where John(AJ) left them to return to Jerusalem. 14 From Perga they went on to Pisidian Antioch.(AK) On the Sabbath(AL) they entered the synagogue(AM) and sat down. 15 After the reading from the Law(AN) and the Prophets, the leaders of the synagogue sent word to them, saying, “Brothers, if you have a word of exhortation for the people, please speak.”

Psalm 137

By the rivers of Babylon(A) we sat and wept(B)
when we remembered Zion.(C)
There on the poplars(D)
we hung our harps,(E)
for there our captors(F) asked us for songs,
our tormentors demanded(G) songs of joy;
they said, “Sing us one of the songs of Zion!”(H)

How can we sing the songs of the Lord(I)
while in a foreign land?
If I forget you,(J) Jerusalem,
may my right hand forget its skill.
May my tongue cling to the roof(K) of my mouth
if I do not remember(L) you,
if I do not consider Jerusalem(M)
my highest joy.

Remember, Lord, what the Edomites(N) did
on the day Jerusalem fell.(O)
“Tear it down,” they cried,
“tear it down to its foundations!”(P)
Daughter Babylon, doomed to destruction,(Q)
happy is the one who repays you
according to what you have done to us.
Happy is the one who seizes your infants
and dashes them(R) against the rocks.

1 Kings 19:1-21, Acts 12:1-23, Psalm 136:1-26, Proverbs 17:14-15

Today is the 18th day of June, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian. It’s great to be here with you today and every day, another step forward is what we’ve come and gathered around this Global Campfire to take, and so let’s take that together. And, of course, that next step takes us back into the book of first Kings, where we are really dealing with King Ahab and his interactions with the prophet Elijah. Some of those interactions have included a mighty show of force from the one true God, who answered by fire on Mount Carmel and which led to the end of 450 prophets of Bale. Ahab’s wife Jezebel is a Bale worshiper and she’s very serious and devout about it. So, she’s going to have to find out eventually about these prophets, let’s pick up the story, first Kings chapter 19.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word, we are grateful for the gift that it is in our lives in the direction that it brings. Holy Spirit, come and plant what we’ve read, all of the different stories that we are moving through and these amazing things that are happening. And as we continue to read and understand and grow in our understanding, plant it deep in our lives so that as we navigate our days, the Scriptures are there, reminding us of what we know. Lead us by the power of Your Holy Spirit. You are the only true God, and we are watching how You are manifesting Yourself in these situations in the Scriptures and those give us examples for how You are working in our lives. May we recognize and follow Your lead. We ask, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Prayer and Encouragements:

Morning DAB family, this is Brian calling out of Florida. I’ve been listening since April. I think this app is amazing and I’ve been sharing it with a couple of my family members. I think it’s great, everybody should be listening to it. But today, I actually made an account and I wanted to leave a recording and I wanted to ask for prayers of discernment and grace and patience and just wisdom. I’ve been a manager at a construction company for the last eight or nine years and the companies been sold and it’s a great company. I make great money and I’d like to change careers, so, I can have more time with my family and just more good in my life and that’s gonna require me to make a major pay cut and lose my benefits until the foreseeable future. And I feel in my heart that it’s the right decision and everybody that knows about it, is pressuring me to stay with the major company but the stress really gets to me and I never see my family. And I’m just in a really bad spot right now, I feel trapped. I just, I just feel like I’m in a hole and I just need, I just need some kind of wisdom I need prayers. I need something, to just send an answer to me and what I should be doing. I’m just very confused right now. And thank you, thank you.

Hello DABers, this is Steve from Texas. I was listening to Steve, Stephen, Leila and Danny. The, this is June the 14th and he’s battling, he has no custody on the daughter and he has no money. And he hasn’t seen his kids in 4 months. And I’m lifting up Stephen and the Lord’s hand. I pray Lord that you console his heart and give him the shalom that surpasses understanding. I’ve been through what he is going through and understand Lord, the pain and the outpouring of his love over his children, Lord. And I pray Lord, that You maintain that relationship, despite all the hurdles of the court. I pray for Your divine intervention, Lord, in his life. In Jesus Christ name.

Hey DAB family, this is your sister Ashley from California. And I am calling on June 14th and I wanted to call and respond to the brother, who was on at the very end of today’s reading. My heart broke for you brother. I know that for me, during the pandemic and through COVID, my life went from one path to, it went, it felt like it went to a downward spiral. And I’ve released that and I am so sorry, my heart breaks for you with where you’re at right now with your daughters. But as I finish listening to you, there was a, I’m driving to work but I saw this truck that said, real men love Jesus and the license plate said L-Roy. And brother, I just want to remind you, I just want you to know that God see’s you and He hears you and He loves you, He is for you and He, I know it’s hard. I don’t want to throw a bible verse at you to say, just to like, put a band-aid on it and like, and like make it all better and that’s not gonna happen. But if you keep turning to the Lord and you keep honestly crying out and letting Him know how you feel and then turning to Him and turning to His word and coming back to hear Him, He will heal, He will help you. And that will be for your good and His glory. So, I just want to encourage you brother. Take heart, be strong and encouraged, God’s got you. Love your sister Ashley in California.

Good morning Daily Audio Bible. This is Laura in HeverHill. Today’s the 14th day of June. I just heard a gentleman, the father of Stephen, Leila and Emmy. Lord, I hear a broken man. A dad, whose heart is desperate to see his children, to provide for his children. Lord, everything that is going on in the desperation of this family, You know. I pray Father, for protection for the girls, wherever they are. I pray for this father, for his needs to be met. And Lord, I pray Father, I thank You that he’s seeking Your face. I thank You God that he is turning to You. Lord, I just pray Father for amazing grace and mercy and peace and strength and restored joy to this family. Father, please guide and direct his steps and his ___ I pray in Jesus’ name.

Hi, it’s Sparky. I liked to pray for the father of Stephen, Leila and Emmy. Bear with me brother, if I cry with you. It is very heartfelt and there are a lot of us dads that can feel like you sometimes. So, go ahead and pray together. Father God, I ask that You give this man strength. I ask that You reach deep down into his heart, help him to know that those kids love him and adore him for every piece of time in his life that he has spent on them and for them. Father God, I ask that You give strength to this gentleman, I ask that You help him to rise up and be the strongest piece of iron that You have ever laid hands on when it comes to his faith and his strength. He’s been gone a while, Father; he’s walking back and he’s falling on his knees before You. As another father, I am on my knees with him, praying that this situation will sort itself out. Lord, I ask that You give him the peace and the encouragement, the same encouragement that Peter had when he fell short, so many times and he was walking with Jesus. But Jesus still, grabbed him by the hand and said, you haven’t been gone to long, stand up and walk with me. I love you brother. It’s in Jesus name we pray. Amen.

1 Kings 19

19 When Ahab arrived in Jezreel, he told Jezebel about everything that had taken place. He told her how Elijah had executed all the prophets of Baal with a sword, and she became furious. Jezebel sent an urgent message to Elijah.

Jezebel’s Message: May the gods kill me and worse, if I haven’t killed you the way you killed their priests by this time tomorrow. Your end is near, Elijah.

Terrified, Elijah quickly ran for his life. He traveled the length of Israel in one day and finally arrived at Beersheba, the southern point of God’s territory, which is in Judah. When he arrived, he instructed his servant to remain there while he sought solitude. He journeyed into the desert for one day and then decided to rest beneath the limbs of a broom tree. There he prayed that his life would be over quickly and that he would die there beneath the tree.

Elijah: I’m finished, Eternal One. Please end my life here and now, even though I have failed, and I am no better than my ancestors.

Elijah then laid himself down under the broom tree and entered into a deep sleep. While he was sleeping, a heavenly messenger came and touched him and gave him instructions.

Messenger: Get up, and eat.

Elijah looked and found a breadcake sitting over charcoal near his head. There was also a jar of water. He ate the food and drank the water, and then he lay back down.

Often the only thing growing in the desert, the small broom tree has enough substance to save Elijah. This bush, whose limbs grow straight up like a broom standing on its end, offers meager shade; but its oil-rich branches and roots make excellent fuel and charcoal; the thick roots travel deep into the ground and offer both water and fire. God provides for Elijah’s needs—nothing more, and nothing less.

The Eternal’s messenger visited him again, touched him, and gave him more instructions.

Heavenly Messenger: Get up, and eat. Your journey ahead is great, and you need plenty of nourishment.

Elijah got up and ate the food and drank the water. His body felt strong again, and he journeyed for 40 more days and 40 more nights to Horeb, God’s mountain where Moses received the Ten Directives. When he arrived at Horeb, he walked into a cave and rested for the night.

Eternal One (to Elijah): Why are you here, Elijah? What is it that you desire?

Elijah: 10 As you know, all my passion has been devoted to the Eternal One, the God of heavenly armies. The Israelites have abandoned Your covenant with them, they have torn down every single one of Your altars, and they have executed by the sword all those who prophesy in Your name. I am the last remaining prophet, and they now seek to execute me as well.

Eternal One: 11 Leave this cave, and go stand on the mountainside in My presence.

The Eternal passed by him. The mighty wind separated the mountains and crumbled every stone before the Eternal. This was not a divine wind, for the Eternal was not within this wind. After the wind passed through, an earthquake shook the earth. This was not a divine quake, for the Eternal was not within this earthquake. 12-13 After the earthquake was over, there was a fire. This was not a divine fire, for the Eternal was not within this fire.

After the fire died out, there was nothing but the sound of a calm breeze. And through this breeze a gentle, quiet voice entered into Elijah’s ears. He covered his face with his cloak and went to the mouth of the cave. Suddenly, Elijah was surprised.

Eternal One: Why are you here, Elijah? What is it that you desire?

Elijah: 14 As you know, all my passion has been devoted to the Eternal God of heavenly armies. The Israelites have abandoned Your covenant with them, they have torn down every one of Your altars, and they have executed all who prophesy in Your name by the sword. I am the last remaining prophet, and they now seek to execute me as well. They won’t stop.

Eternal One: 15 Travel back the same way you traveled here, but continue north to the desert of Damascus. There, I want you to anoint Hazael as Aram’s king, 16 Jehu (Nimshi’s son) as Israel’s king, and Elisha (Shaphat’s son from Abel-meholah) to replace you as prophet. 17 Jehu will execute anyone who escapes from Hazael, and Elisha will execute all who escape from Jehu. 18 I will keep for Myself the 7,000 Israelites who have not bowed down to Baal or offered him kisses.

19 Elijah journeyed to find Elisha (Shaphat’s son). He found Elisha in the field where 12 pairs of oxen were being worked. Elisha was with the last pair. Elijah wrapped his cloak, his token of spiritual power, around Elisha, 20 and Elisha abandoned his oxen and chased after Elijah.

Elisha: Before I leave, allow me to tell my parents goodbye, and then I will journey with you.

Elijah: Go then. Tell them goodbye. What have I done to you?

Elisha realizes that Elijah is questioning his devotion—will he stay with his parents or become a prophet? Elisha demonstrates his devotion to God by destroying his livelihood.

21 Elisha returned, but not to his parents. He killed his oxen, then he used the equipment (harness, yoke, and reigns) to prepare a fire and cook all the ox meat. He offered the food to everyone, and they feasted. Elisha then joined Elijah and became his apprentice.

Acts 12:1-23

12 Back in Jerusalem, hard times came to the disciples. King Herod violently seized some who belonged to the church with the intention of mistreating them. He ordered James (brother of John) to be executed by the sword, the first of those appointed as emissaries to be martyred. This move pleased Jewish public opinion, so he decided to arrest Peter also. During the holy festival of Unleavened Bread, he caught Peter and imprisoned him, assigning four squads of soldiers to guard him. He planned to bring him to trial publicly after the Passover holiday.

During Peter’s imprisonment, the church prayed constantly and intensely to God for his safety. Their prayers were not answered, until the night before Peter’s execution.

Picture this event: Peter is sound asleep between two soldiers, double-chained, with still more guards outside the prison door watching for external intruders. Suddenly the cell fills with light: it is a messenger of the Lord manifesting himself. He taps Peter on the side, awakening him.

Messenger of the Lord: Get up, quickly.

The chains fall off Peter’s wrists.

Messenger of the Lord: Come on! Put on your belt. Put on your sandals.

Peter puts them on and just stands there.

Messenger of the Lord: Pull your cloak over your shoulders. Come on! Follow me!

Peter does so, but he is completely dazed. He doesn’t think this is really happening—he assumes he is dreaming or having a vision. 10 They pass the first guard. They pass the second guard. They come to the iron gate that opens to the city. The gate swings open for them on its own, and they walk into a lane. Suddenly the messenger disappears.

11 Peter finally realized all that had really happened.

Peter: Amazing! The Lord has sent His messenger to rescue me from Herod and the public spectacle of my execution which the Jews fully expected.

12 Peter immediately rushed over to the home of a woman named Mary. (Mary’s son, John Mark, would eventually become an important associate of the apostles.) A large group had gathered there to pray for Peter and his safety. 13 He knocked at the outer gate; and a maid, Rhoda, answered. 14 She recognized Peter’s voice, but she was so overcome with excitement that she left him standing on the street and ran inside to tell everyone.

Rhoda: Our prayers were answered! Peter is at the front gate!

Praying Believers: 15 Rhoda, you’re crazy!

Rhoda: No! Peter’s out there! I’m sure of it!

Praying Believers: Well, maybe it’s his guardian angel or something.

16 All this time, Peter was still out in the street, knocking on the gate. Finally they came and let him in. Of course, the disciples were stunned, and everyone was talking at once. 17 Peter motioned for them to quiet down and then told them the amazing story of how the Lord engineered his escape.

On the night before his execution, Peter sleeps like a baby. Here he is, chained in a room full of soldiers while James’s blood is still moist on the ground. Although he can only assume this is his one last night before his own torturous death, he is not afraid. So peacefully does he rest, in fact, that the heavenly messenger has to prod him to wake up; and while he is walking, he questions if he is dreaming. Does the thought that believers are on their knees all day appealing to God for him give him peace? Maybe. But certainly Peter trusts that God is in control. A church that started with a few people is now over 8,000, and God is redeeming the rest of the world through these people.

Peter: Could you please get word to James, our Lord’s brother, and the other believers that I’m all right?

Then he left to find a safer place to stay.

18 But when morning came and Peter was gone, there was a huge uproar among the soldiers. 19 Herod sent troops to find Peter, but he was missing. Herod interrogated the guards and ordered their executions. Peter headed down toward the coast to Caesarea, and he remained there.

20 At this time there was major political upheaval. Herod was at odds with the populace of neighboring Tyre and Sidon, so the two cities sent a large group of representatives to meet with him. They won over one of Herod’s closest associates, Blastus, the director of the treasury; then they pressured Herod to drop his grudge. Cooperation was important to the two cities because they were all major trading partners and depended on Herod’s territory for food. 21 They struck a deal, and Herod came over to ratify it. Dressed in all his royal finery and seated high above them on a platform, he made a speech; 22 and the people of Tyre and Sidon interrupted with cheers to flatter him.

The People: This is the voice of a god! This is no mere mortal!

23 Herod should have given glory to the true God; but since he vainly accepted their flattery, that very day a messenger of the Lord struck him with an illness. It was an ugly disease, involving putrefaction and worms eating his flesh. Eventually he died.

Psalm 136

Psalm 136

This hymn of praise recounts God’s actions in the past: creation, exodus, and the giving of the land to Israel. A repeated refrain indicates this psalm was chanted responsively.

Let your heart overflow with praise to the Eternal, for He is good,
for His faithful love lasts forever.
Praise the True God who reigns over all other gods,
for His faithful love lasts forever.
Praise the Lord who reigns over all other lords,
for His faithful love lasts forever.

To Him who alone does marvelous wonders,
for His faithful love lasts forever.
Who created the heavens with skill and artistry,
for His faithful love lasts forever.
Who laid out dry land over the waters,
for His faithful love lasts forever.
Who made the great heavenly lights,
for His faithful love lasts forever.
The sun to reign by day,
for His faithful love lasts forever.
The moon and stars to reign by night,
for His faithful love lasts forever.

10 To Him who struck down the firstborn of the Egyptians,
for His faithful love lasts forever.
11 Who set Israel free from Egyptian masters,
for His faithful love lasts forever.
12 With fierce strength, a mighty hand, and an outstretched arm,
for His faithful love lasts forever.
13 To Him who split the Red Sea[a] in two and made a path between the divided waters,
for His faithful love lasts forever.
14 Then allowed Israel to pass safely through on dry ground,
for His faithful love lasts forever.
15 To Him who crushed Pharaoh and his army in the waters of the Red Sea,[b]
for His faithful love lasts forever.
16 Who guided His people through the desert,
for His faithful love lasts forever.
17 Who struck down mighty kings,
for His faithful love lasts forever.
18 Who slaughtered famous kings,
for His faithful love lasts forever.
19 Sihon, the king of the Amorites,
for His faithful love lasts forever.
20 And Og, the king of Bashan,
for His faithful love lasts forever.
21 To Him who gave the conquered land as an inheritance,
for His faithful love lasts forever.
22 Who made the land a heritage to Israel, His servant,
for His faithful love lasts forever.

23 To Him who remembered us when we were nearly defeated,
for His faithful love lasts forever.
24 Who rescued us from our enemies,
for His faithful love lasts forever.
25 Who provides food for every living thing,
for His faithful love lasts forever.

26 Let your heart overflow with praise to the True God of heaven,
for His faithful love lasts forever.

Proverbs 17:14-15

14 Picking a fight is like leaking water from a crack in a dam,
so walk away from an argument before the outburst.
15 Both of these deeply offend the Eternal:

1 Kings 18:1-46, Acts 11:1-30, Psalms 135:1-21, Proverbs 17:12-13

Today is the 17th day of June welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I am Brian it is great to be here with you today and thrilled that we can gather around the Global Campfire and take another step forward together. That will lead us, the next step that is, will lead us back into the book of first Kings. And we need to remember that after Solomon’s reign Israel split into two different nations or kingdoms. The northern kingdom of Israel, which was 10 tribes and then the southern kingdom of Judah which was the tribe of Judah and Benjamin. And we are now chronicling the kings of both of those kingdoms and how they overlap and sometimes how they remain at war with each other, even though they’re the same people, people lead out of slavery and into the promised land and now they’re fighting against each other. But first Kings isn’t dissimilar kinda to books like the book of Judges. If you remember when we went to the book of Judges, sometimes we met a judge and we had a long story, a lot of information to process and talk about and then with other judges we get like a paragraph of what they did and when they did. That can be true in Kings as well. Some of these kings we’ll get to know they’ll be much more detail and story for us, whereas with some of the other kings we get a paragraph. But that’s we’re moving through, is a chronicling of the kings of Israel and the kings of Judah. And at this point we have also met the prophets Elijah who has prophesied a drought, or a famine in the land and then he goes into hiding worries being kept alive by the birds. And, so, we pick up the story. First Kings chapter 18.

Commentary:

Okay. Such big things happening in the Scriptures today. So, in the book of first Kings we have the showdown with Elijah that was kinda being set up in yesterday’s reading. So, it’s Elijah, the one prophet of God against 450 prophets of Baal. And you can imagine the scene, these people crying out to Baal to answer with fire from heaven and show His power and show that he’s the true God and they are cutting themselves and dancing around and just trying to whip things up into a frenzy. And Elijah’s just like maybe you need to be a little louder, maybe he’s doing something else, just maybe you need to press in. And they do. Nothing happens. At the time of the evening sacrifice, Elijah restores an altar, digs a ditch around it, covers the alter, the wood, the stones with water and fire comes from heaven, consuming the sacrifice. And everyone there saw it and they fell to the ground. It changed them. It disrupted them and changed them until they were confessing once again, “the Lord our God is the true and only God”, which invariably led to the demise of the prophets of Baal. Mount Caramel is a real place. In fact, there’s a monastery on the top of Mount Carmel that protects this place and commemorates what happened there. And the Kishon Valley, the stream running below the mountain is visible from the top of Mount Carmel. This happened in a place. And if we remember there was severe drought so bad that everyone was suffering looking for Elijah who had spoke the word of the Lord that began the drought. Elijah goes back atop Mount Carmel begins to pray. And we just read this. He sends his servant to look toward the sea because Mount Caramel’s not that far from the Mediterranean Sea. And after seven times the servant was sent comes back and says there’s a tiny little, tiny, tiny cloud, about the size of a man’s hand coming up out of the sea. And that’s when Elijah knew, like, okay tell the king he better get going back to Jezreel. And then Elijah is able to run and outpace the chariot as he runs from Mount Caramel back to Jezreel. I guess I probably have to look it…look it up on the map, but that's…that’s a long, long, long way to run. I’m gonna guess no less than 50 miles give or take. And the famine is brought to an end by the mighty power of the only true God. We have a massive display of God’s power that disrupts the people and turns their heart back to God. So, it's…it’s a mountaintop moment that happened on a mountaintop. If only it could last. We’ll have to see how this story continues to play out as we continue our journey tomorrow.

Then in the book of Acts, we are continuing a story that as we’ve already mentioned was so profound that it changed the early church and the reverberations of that shift echo until today. So, we remember yesterday of Cornelius and his household in Caesarea and Peter coming there beginning to share the gospel and the Holy Spirit falling upon them. News has spread as the book of Acts told us. News has spread very very quickly. So, by the time Peter gets back to Joppa people already know what happened. And as we can see right out of the gate where are some people there that are like, this is not supposed to happen. We are not supposed to extend fellowship and hospitality to outsiders or to Goyim, to Gentiles. But once Peter told the story everybody had to kinda come to the same sort of conclusion that Peter had come to, not only from his visions in Joppa but also…like Peter doesn’t have any power to force the Holy Spirit upon someone else. Nobody has that power, to just make someone receive the Holy Spirit. And at this time, they truly believe that the only people invited to receive the Holy Spirit were Jewish people. So, the Holy Spirit fell upon Gentiles, Cornelius’s household. Peter could only conclude what..what am I supposed to do? Like the Holy Spirit came upon them. God spoke. God’s Holy Spirit came upon them. So, who was I…who are any of us to denounce something that God has chosen to do? I don’t know…I mean this is one of the most pivotal moments in the Bible and in…in our church history, like a complete rewiring of their understanding. No longer were they like separate and chosen and put aside. But God was inviting everybody to the family to be set apart and put aside as holy people even Gentiles. And as we continue our journey through the New Testament, we’ll see that. This is a serious serious problem for some people and a point of exuberance and joy for others. All love Jesus but now we have a little bit of a rift between them and will see how this goes as we continue our journey.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word. We love You with all of our hearts. Help us to ingest and process and allow the Scriptures and the stories found in them deep into our hearts, that they may change us.  And we thank You, that through Jesus all of us, even we who are Gentiles are welcome into Your family. Thank You. We don’t deserve this or anything. And, so, our hearts are grateful today. Come Holy Spirit. Well up from within us with gratefulness. And may we share kindness and compassion with those around us. None of us deserve this. Everyone is invited. We pray this in the mighty name of Jesus. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Good morning Daily Audio Bible this is Jesus from beautiful South Florida, and I just want to wish you all a great start of your week. May the Lord mighty God will bless us in abundance each one of you. Well, this call this call is a better prayer request made by a brother named Demetrius. Demetrius from Portland OR you called on the community prayer on the 10th of this month. Today is the 13th and brother I have been praying for you since I heard your petition and it’s about your marriage and I want to tell you that I also going through the same circumstances, and I want to pray something over you brother, something that has been put in my heart. And yes, as husbands and men we want everything to be fixed right away. We want restoration, we want healing, we want it now. And that’s the way it works because we love our marriage, you know, we love our wives. But brother the Lord has come up to me and has shown me a different way to pray for marriage. And what I pray is restoration of a friendship of a unity of respect. Remember that before we become married, we are friends. And in that friendship, there is fruit that are blessings, that are good moments, that are memories. Once we get married, we come into this this journey, a journey that has a lot of trials, tribulations, responsibilities. And some of those responsibilities are up to us men to do as God has blessed us as the head of the family. So, brother Demetrius I want to tell you and I want you encourage you it’s something that has helped my life.

This is Eyes of a Dove. I was thinking to myself, I like to call in and pray for my daughter and for all the DABbers kids at every school that they be safe from mass shootings. And then I thought can God handle more than that? Could I pray for a greater coverage? What if I said the world? To God, if I ask Him to protect the world’s children in every school in every college in every technical program for all the children for the legions of angels to go, God said that every person could have a legion of angels to protect them. If that’s the case, I can pray and ask the Lord. Dear God, please protect all of the children from the demonic forces that seek to kill steal and destroy them. Father, that any person with guns or with killing on their mind would not be able to enter those schools, Father that You would supernaturally put a boundary around around these schools and around these children and that we would fear not for legions of angels protect our children. Father God, I ask it be Your way, that Your hand would come down like a hedge of protection a ring of fire around these children Lord God. Thank You for protecting our children. Thank You for giving us our children. They are gift from You. Father and I just pray for the children that have fear, Father that they would not fear but they would trust in You, trust that You are there to protect them keep them safe. Let the teachers not be afraid Father God but help them to be strong and courageous and wise in every situation. We thank You for our school teachers in our districts. Thank You Lord. Yeshem, Yeshua. Amen.

This is for Prairie Sky suffering from depression. I understand what you are going through. You’re at the bottom of the waves and all you can see around you are the dark wall of water closing in on every side but there is a horizon out there and when the waters of your life come you will see the glorious horizon, that future that God has for you. And until that time I pray as Paul prayed for the Colossians, that you will be strengthened with all might according to God’s glorious power unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness. Amen.

Hi DAB family this is Tammy from the Adirondacks. My husband and I just got done listening to the June 13th podcast. And Prairie Sky you called in. Your depression is just taking a toll on you from the sound of it and you’re not alone. I know where you’re at. But we just want to pray for you sister. Father God, we lift up Prairie Sky to you Lord. Lord you are the mighty physician, You are our healer, You are our comforter, You are our ever present help and tomes of trouble. And there’s nothing too big for You Father God that You cannot heal us from. And we’re asking dear Lord to just pour Your anointing down on Prairie Sky, lift this depression, fill her heart and her mind and her soul with Your peace and Your joy and Your love. Let her know that she is so worthy of all Your love and more, that she is Your daughter and that You love her, and You cherish her and that she is the righteousness of You Father God through Your son Jesus Christ. Sister, be encouraged. Be encouraged and just lean and press into the Father. Jesus take care of her and just watch over her and Your precious name we pray. Amen. If you need somebody to talk to, reach out to somebody to talk to, reach out to me reach out on the DAB, the Prayer Wall or Facebook or somehow if you need somebody to talk too. You’re not alone. You don’t have to go through this alone. God bless. Love you.

I’m praying for the father that I just heard on the Prayer Wall. He sounded broken. He hadn’t seen his daughters in four months, and he was saying how the courts wanted him to give all this money that he doesn’t have and he’s feeling lost and alone and estranged from his children. Dear heavenly Father please cover this man in Your blood in the blood of Jesus. Please give him the ability to look up and to hold on for just another moment. Lord, I ask I ask that You send help his way in an unexpected and miraculous way dear Jesus. I pray Lord. I pray that he will have an understanding that You Lord at the author and finisher of his fate and he will look to You. Amen.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Friday June 17, 2022 (NIV)

1 Kings 18

18 Many days passed, and the word of the Eternal visited Elijah during the third year of the drought.

Eternal One: Go now, and reveal yourself to Ahab. When you do, I will bring rain on the earth.

Elijah then went to reveal himself to Ahab.

During this time, there was a dangerous shortage of food in Samaria, and Ahab had summoned Obadiah to come to him. Obadiah was the coordinator of Ahab’s palace and was wholly devoted to the Eternal. Back when Jezebel was murdering all the prophets of the Eternal, Obadiah had given 100 prophets refuge. There were two caves in which he hid the prophets—50 prophets in each cave. He provided them with food and water during this time.

Ahab (to Obadiah): Search through the land, and visit all the springs and streams that run through the ravines; see if you can find any grass on which we can allow our horses and mules to graze, so that they may stay alive for as long as possible. Do this so that we don’t have to kill our own beasts.

Ahab and Obadiah split up the regions they were going to explore, and they both traveled in different directions to save time.

While Obadiah was exploring the land, suddenly Elijah came upon him. Obadiah knew who he was—a prophet—and he fell on his face before Elijah.

Obadiah: I can’t believe it’s really you, master Elijah.

Elijah: Yes, it is I. Go now, and give this message to your king: “Elijah has arrived.”

Obadiah: What is the purpose of this? Have I wronged you or God? Why do you put your servant in a dangerous spot with Ahab? Ahab will most certainly kill me. 10 As surely as your True God, the Eternal lives, there is not a single country or kingdom that Ahab has not searched for you. Whenever a country said that you were not there, Ahab made them swear an oath that you were nowhere to be found. 11 Now you are asking me to give him your message: “Look, Elijah has arrived.” 12 I don’t know where the Spirit of the Eternal is going to lead you after I depart from you. In fact, I am certain if I tell Ahab that you have arrived, He will take you somewhere else; and if you are nowhere to be found, then I will be put to death. Since I, your servant, was young, all of my worship and devotion has gone to the Eternal One. 13 Don’t you know, my master, what I did during the time that Jezebel was murdering all the Eternal One’s prophets? I gave 100 prophets refuge. I hid them away in 2 caves—50 prophets in each cave—and I provided them with food and water. 14 Even after all that I have done for the Eternal One, you ask me to give my king the message, “Look, Elijah has arrived.” He will surely kill me!

Elijah: Do not fear for your life. 15 As certain as the life of the Eternal One, Commander of heavenly armies, whom I serve, I will reveal myself to Ahab on this very day. You have nothing to worry about.

16 Obadiah approached Ahab and gave him Elijah’s message. Ahab immediately went to find Elijah.

Ahab (seeing Elijah): 17 There you are. I thought I perceived a troublemaker in Israel.

Elijah: 18 Hypocrite! I have caused no mischief in Israel. It is you and your family who are guilty of the very thing you accuse me of. You have turned your back on the laws of the Eternal and abandoned your devotion to Him. Instead you have given yourselves to the Baals, the masters of pagan nations. 19 Now I want you to gather the entire community of Israel and send them to Mount Carmel to meet with me. I have a message for them. Be sure to gather the 450 prophets of Baal and the 400 prophets of the goddess Asherah—the ones who fill their mouths and stomachs with food from Jezebel’s table.

20 Ahab did as Elijah asked, sent word throughout the entire community of Israel, and gathered all the prophets atop Mount Carmel.

Elijah (approaching the people): 21 How much longer will you sit on the fence, refusing to make a decision between the Lord and Baal? If you believe the Eternal One is the True God, then devote yourselves entirely to Him. If you believe Baal is your master, then devote yourselves entirely to him.

All the people who were gathered together atop Mount Carmel were completely silent. They didn’t know what to say to this.

Elijah: 22 I am the last remaining prophet of the Eternal. Baal has 450 prophets. Let us do a test to reveal the true quality of our deities. 23 Bring us two young bulls, the common sacrifice to your master whom you depict as a bull. The prophets of Baal may choose first which bull they want. They will kill it, chop it up, and prepare it for a fire by placing it above wood; but they will not light it. I will do the same with the other bull and prepare it for fire and place it above wood, but I will not light it. 24 Then you call upon your god, Baal, and I will call upon the Eternal. The God who answers with fire is the one True God.

Everyone liked this idea and said, “This sounds like a worthy plan.”

Elijah (to the prophets of Baal): 25 You have the pick of the bulls. Take the one you want, and prepare it first because there are many of you. Call upon your god, but do not set fire to the wood.

26 The prophets of Baal picked out their bull and prepared it. They called upon Baal from dawn till noon, crying out, “Baal, answer us with fire!” But there was no voice, no reply. Nothing happened. All they did was dance around the altar they had built and cry out to an elusive god.

27 At about midday, Elijah began provoking them.

Elijah: You have to shout louder than that! The one to whom you cry out certainly must be a god! Perhaps he is daydreaming or napping or away from his heavenly throne. Perhaps he is in a deep sleep, and you must wake him up. Shout louder!

28 So all the prophets of Baal began to shout at the top of their lungs pleading with all their might. They cut themselves with knives and swords and spears until they were covered in their own blood. 29 Midday passed by, and the prophets of Baal kept on with their antics until it was time for the evening sacrifice. But still, there was no voice, no reply. No god heard them.

Elijah (to the people): 30 Gather around me.

So all the people gathered around him, and he fixed the Eternal’s altar that had been torn down. 31 Elijah gathered 12 stones, one for each of Jacob’s tribes. Jacob was the one who wrestled with God and whom the word of the Eternal One visited, saying, “Your name will be Israel.”

32 Elijah took the 12 stones and constructed an altar in honor of the Eternal One and carved a ditch out around it large enough to hold 13 quarts of seed. 33 He set up the wood, chopped up the bull, and placed it on top of the wood.

Elijah (to the people): Go get four big jars, and fill them all up with water. Then pour the water out over the burnt offering and the wood. 34 Now, do the same thing again.

And so they did it a second time.

Elijah: All right, now do the same thing a third time.

And so they did it a third time. 35 The water covered the altar and even filled up the ditch. 36 When it was time for offering the evening sacrifice, Elijah called out to the Eternal.

Elijah (praying): Eternal One—God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel—reveal Yourself on this day as Israel’s God. Make it known that I serve You and have done all this because You commanded it of me. 37 Answer me, Eternal One. Reveal Yourself so that everyone here will know that You, Eternal One, are the True God—the only God. Do it so that everyone knows You are turning the gaze of their hearts back to You again.

38 Right then the Eternal One’s fire landed upon the altar. The flames consumed the burnt offering, the wood, the stones, and the ground. The flames even drank up all the water in the ditch. 39 When everyone witnessed this extraordinary power, they all put their faces to the ground in fear and awe and wonder.

People: The Eternal One is the True God! The Eternal One is the True God!

Elijah: 40 Seize all the prophets of Baal. Don’t let a single one of them escape!

So everyone grabbed hold of the prophets of Baal, and Elijah gave instruction for them to be taken to the Kishon Valley and killed immediately—no exceptions.

Elijah (to Ahab): 41 You should go fill your belly with food and water. I hear a heavy rain coming.

42 Ahab did as Elijah instructed and went to eat and drink. Elijah journeyed to the peak of Mount Carmel. There he bowed down on the ground and placed his head between his knees.

Elijah (to his servant): 43 Go now, and look in the direction of the sea.

Servant (returning to Elijah): I did as you asked, and there is nothing in the direction of the sea.

Elijah gave him the same instruction seven times, “Go back, and look in the direction of the sea. 44 The servant did as Elijah requested each time; and on the seventh time, he told Elijah, “A minuscule cloud, as tiny as the hand of a man, is ascending from the sea.”

Elijah: Go quickly, and give a message to Ahab for me: “Prepare your chariot, and leave quickly before the rain gets torrential and keeps you from traveling.”

45 The sky became filled with dark monstrous clouds, the wind grew wild, the heavy rain fell, and Ahab traveled quickly in his chariot to Jezreel. 46 The strength of the Eternal filled Elijah. The prophet pulled up his garment around his thighs and sprinted ahead of Ahab the entire way to Jezreel.

Acts 11

11 1-2 By the time Peter and his friends from Joppa returned to Jerusalem, news about outsiders accepting God’s message had already spread to the Lord’s emissaries[a] and believers there. Some of the circumcised believers didn’t welcome Peter with joy, but with criticism.

Circumcised Believers: Why did you violate divine law by associating with outsiders and sitting at the table with them for a meal? This is an outrage!

Peter patiently told them what had happened, laying out in detail the whole story.

Peter: I was in Joppa, I was praying, and I fell into a trance. In my vision, something like a huge sheet descended from the sky as if it were being lowered by its four corners. It landed right in front of me. It was full of all kinds of four-footed creatures that we would call unclean—I could identify mammals, snakes, lizards, and birds. Then I heard a voice say, “Get up, Peter! Kill these creatures and eat them!” Of course, I replied, “No way, Lord! Not a single bite of forbidden, nonkosher food has ever touched my lips.” But then the voice spoke from heaven a second time: “If God makes something clean, you must not call it dirty or forbidden.” 10 This whole drama was repeated three times, and then it was all pulled back up into the sky.

11 At that very second, three men arrived at the house where I was staying. They had come to me from Caesarea. 12 The Holy Spirit told me I should go with them, that I shouldn’t make any distinction between them as Gentiles and us as Jews. These six brothers from Joppa came with me; and yes, we entered the man’s home even though he was an outsider.

13 The outsider told us the story of how he had seen a heavenly messenger standing in his house who said, “Send to Joppa and bring back Simon, also called Peter, 14 and he will give you a message that will rescue both you and your household.” 15 Then I began to speak; and as I did, the Holy Spirit fell upon them—it was exactly as it had been with us at the beginning. 16 Then I remembered what Jesus had said to us: “John ritually cleansed people with water through baptism,[b] but you will be washed with the Holy Spirit.”[c] 17 So, if God gave them the same gift we were given when we believed in the Lord Jesus, the Anointed One, who was I to stand in God’s way?

18 There was no argument, only silence.

Circumcised Believers: Well then, we must conclude that God has given to the outsiders the opportunity to rethink their lives, turn to God,[d] and gain a new life.

Just as the experience of the Holy Spirit transforms that small community of believers into the church at the beginning of this book, the presence of the Spirit’s work among these outsiders, the ones who were not a part of God’s covenant with Moses, demonstrates that they, too, are part of the church. This isn’t what many expected, and questions about inclusion of outsiders consume the early life of the church.

19 The believers who were scattered from Judea because of the persecution following Stephen’s stoning kept moving out, reaching Phoenicia, Cyprus, and Antioch. Until this time, they had only shared their message with Jews. 20 Then some men from Cyprus and Cyrene who had become believers came to Antioch, and they began sharing the message of the Lord Jesus with some Greek converts to Judaism. 21 The Lord was at work through them, and a large number of these Greeks became believers and turned to the Lord Jesus.

22 Word of this new development came to the church in Jerusalem, and they sent Barnabas to Antioch to investigate. 23 He arrived and saw God’s grace in action there, so he rejoiced and urged them to remain faithful to the Lord, to maintain an enduring, unshakable devotion. 24 This Barnabas truly was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit, full of faith. A very large number of people were brought to the Lord.

25 Barnabas soon was off again—now to Tarsus to look for Saul. 26 He found Saul and brought him back to Antioch. The two of them spent an entire year there, meeting with the church and teaching huge numbers of people. It was there, in Antioch, where the term “Christian” was first used to identify disciples of Jesus.

27 During that year, some prophets came north from Jerusalem to Antioch. 28 A prophet named Agabus stood in a meeting and made a prediction by the Holy Spirit: there would be an expansive, terrible famine in the whole region during the reign of Claudius. 29 In anticipation of the famine, the disciples determined to give an amount proportionate to their financial ability and create a relief fund for all the believers in Judea. 30 They sent Barnabas and Saul to carry this fund to the elders in Jerusalem.

Psalm 135

Psalm 135

Praise the Eternal!
Praise and glorify the name of the One who always has been and always will be;
praise Him, servants of the Eternal!
Join in the chorus, all you who minister in the Eternal’s temple;
in the courts of our God’s temple,
Glorify the Eternal, for He is good!
Sing praises, and honor His name for it is delightful.
For the Eternal made His choice; He selected Jacob as His own;
He claimed Israel as His possession.

Now I know this: the Eternal is great; His power is unmatched.
Our Master is above any so-called god.
He does whatever He pleases,
in heaven, on earth,
in the seas, and in all the ocean depths.
He draws up the clouds that rise over the whole earth,
He causes rain and the lightning to strike,
and He summons the wind from His storehouses.

He took the lives of Egypt’s firstborn,
human and beast alike.
O Egypt, He worked wonders and signs before your eyes,
signs against Pharaoh and Pharaoh’s servants.
10 He destroyed nation after nation
and killed mighty kings:
11 Sihon, the Amorite king;
Og, the king of Bashan;
and even all the kingdoms of Canaan.
12 He conquered their land and gave it as an inheritance—
an inheritance for His people, Israel.

13 Eternal One, Your name is everlasting.
Your legacy, Eternal One, will be known through all the ages.
14 For the Eternal will judge His people,
He will show compassion to those who serve Him.

15 The nations have idols of silver and gold,
crafted by human hands!
16 They shaped mouths for them, but they cannot speak;
they carved eyes into them, but they cannot see;
17 They placed ears on them, but they cannot hear;
they cannot breathe, not even a puff of air from their mouths!
18 The artisans who made them
are just like them,
and so are all who mistakenly trust in them, no exceptions.

19 House of Israel, praise the Eternal;
house of Aaron, praise the Eternal;
20 House of Levi, praise the Eternal;
all those who revere the Eternal, praise Him!
21 Blessed be the Eternal from Zion,
the One who has made Jerusalem His home.
Praise the Eternal!

I am Brian, it’s wonderful to be here with you today as we gather and take the next step forward together and that next step will lead us lead us right where we left off yesterday, and that happens to be first Kings chapter 15 verse 25 through 17 verse 24, today.

Commentary:

Okay so, in the book of Acts, as we travel alongside the apostle Peter at the moment, we have something that is so profound that happened in today’s reading, that it changed the church of Jesus, irreversibly and changed the course of history in the process, until today. Like, it’s still changed today, because of what we read in the end the book of Acts today. There will be several times through our journey, through the rest of the year that we’ll have to refer back to this moment and remember this moment, especially through the lens of the apostle Paul and understand what is going on here. In yesterday’s reading, Peter’s on a rooftop in the city of Joppa and he’s praying and he sees a vision and, in this vision, there are a number of animals but they would be unclean animals to eat but the message, the messenger in the vision tells him that he should eat these things and of course he resists that saying, he had never done anything like that before. And then he is told, what God has made clean, is clean. Then, these people show up to collect him and take him to Caesarea to Cornelius. Cornelius, is a Roman centurion by Hebrew standards, he is a Gentile. He is an outsider; he is not to be messed with. But he is also not to be associated with, in terms of hospitality and friendship. The Hebrew people are separate. They have been separated; they are separate to God. They don’t intermingle with anybody; they’re trying to get their ducks in a row. So, the God will see that they’re not mixing anymore, and that God should restore them. That is the common understanding of the Hebrew people who feel like they are being occupied, like this land should be theirs. God should give them their homeland back but instead it’s under Roman control and they just get to, squat there, this is the environment that Jesus came into. And so, Jesus message, the vast majority of the time, was to the Hebrew people, in a Hebrew context. Jesus was known as a Hebrew rabbi or even a Hebrew prophet, the signs and wonders are largely among the Hebrew people, indicating that God is hearing them. The people are flocking to Jesus but they’re Hebrew people. So, this whole thing is happening in Hebrew context after Jesus’ death and resurrection and the birth of the church and the falling of the Holy Spirit upon the people, this is all happening in a Jewish or Hebrew context. The earliest early church was Hebrew people, was made up of Hebrew people, in a Hebrew context. Peter is talking to a non-Hebrew family, a Gentile family, a Roman family and he has been summoned there to tell about Jesus. Cornelius received of visionary communication, that he should send for Peter and Peter received a visionary communication that what God has made clean, is clean and also that he should go with these people back to Caesarea. So Peter is in a Gentile house. Something he definitely, culturally, should not be doing and yet he had just had this disruptive vision about things being made clean that had previously been considered unclean and then he had been told to go with these people into a Gentile home. So, he’s sharing the Gospel and the Holy Spirit falls upon them, as the Holy Spirit had fallen upon the Hebrew people in the upper room, on the day of Pentecost. This is the first time they had ever seen anything like this, this was not a part of their framework for where things were going. Gentiles received the Holy Spirit and the dots were beginning to connect for Peter, because of this vision of things that were unclean, being declared clean, which might even include unclean people. Peter sees that the Holy Spirit has spoken here and they are baptized, the first Gentile people to be welcomed into a brand-new thing God was doing in the world. This is a game changer in the early church and now in the world today the Christian faith is made up almost completely of Gentile disciples, Gentile believers throughout the earth. What began as an exclusively Jewish thing, has become dominantly a Gentile thing. So, what we see today, is one of the biggest flashpoints, or monumental shifts that we can find in the Bible. This changes everything and is still changing things today. We’re going to see that this causes a significant amount of unrest and requires quite a bit of discernment and counsel. We’ll see that. But this is the flashpoint. Cornelius summons Peter and the Holy Spirit responds to Gentile people, filling them and they are baptized in the name of Jesus and welcomed into the community of faith. And this has not been done before, and this is not going to sit well with everybody, but thank goodness. I am a Gentile and I am grateful to be welcomed into the family of God. Most of us have the same story and we can trace those roots back to this moment in Caesarea in Cornelius’s home, among his household. And so, let’s appreciate that. Let’s have a sense of gratitude that this very, very exclusive thing was being transformed into…into an inconclusive thing were all are invited, everyone can come, let’s enjoy that shift, as we read it but let’s also understand that this sets off a chain of events and we will see this as we continue through the book of Acts and through the letters of the apostle Paul and all the way through the rest of the New Testament, but it begins here.

Prayer:

This changes things substantially and we thank You Father for that shift, we thank You for the awareness that began to descend upon the apostles that everyone, everyone is invited. Thank You for Your mercy and kindness so that most of us who are hearing this today, can only be grateful, we shouldn’t have been able to be here and yet You welcomed us, even when we were estranged and even when we weren’t permitted to be involved. You died for us and swung open the doors and invited humanity to participate in the process of restoring our species. Thank You, we love You, may we work with You and not against You. In this we pray in the precious and mighty name of Jesus. Amen.

Prayer and Encouragements:

Hello, my DAB family, this is __ calling from the UK. I trust we are all doing well by the grace of the Lord almighty. I’m calling today for someone approached me and said she wanted to pray for somebody. I do not know who the young man is but he’s a 24-year-old, his name is Steven. I’ve heard he’s had a really rough life from childhood. He’s lost his mom as a child. And it’s just been going downhill from there. Right now, he’s hooked on drugs and alcohol and he’s supposed to get on a plane, soon, to a rehab rehabilitation, a Christian rehabilitation center. So, the prayer is that he gets on that plane. Because there’s really not much one can do if he decides not to get on that plane. And get on that plane, gets to his destination and stays there. And, by the grace of God, comes out of there a new being, a new creation. I thought to bring it to my family because I know that Scriptures tells us that when two or three are gathered in His name that He’s there. So, I ask you to please, remember Steven in your prayers and ask that the Good Lord, will lead him through the right path and bring him out on the other side. In the mighty name of Jesus, I pray. Thank you very much for praying with me and may God bless each and every one of us.

Hey DAB family, it is Monday, June 13th and this is your sister Ashley from California and I am humbly coming on here because I want to update you guys and ask you for prayer. The update is, is that, about a week ago, my Grandmommy Jody, who you all have been joining me in prayer, came home from the hospital. She was having problems with her liver enzymes, they were too high and they couldn’t figure, they can’t figure out why, they are like that. So, she, they cannot treat her Leukemia, with that. So, she decided that she wants to come home and there will be no further treatment. So, that’s the update. And what I’m asking for you, to join me in prayer for, is that, after Brian talked today about Solomon and finishing well, that is what came to my heart, what the Lord put on my heart. Guys, I want to ask you to please, help me to pray that my Grandmommy will finish well. That she will be honest about her feelings with the Lord but that she will be like David was and pour out her heart but then turn her eyes upon the Lord. And that she will cling to hope in him, so others will see Jesus and will want to know what helped her to overcome and to be a Proverbs 31 woman. Guys, she is, she is valuable, she is trustworthy, she is a hard worker, she’s well trust, she’s valuable, she’s a treasure. So, please join me in prayer for my Grandmommy. Grandmom, if you listen to this, I love you and we’re gonna get through this a day at a time. I love you DAB family. Bye.

Hello, this is Bob from Arizona. I’m listening to 2nd June podcast today. Right away, a gentleman by the name of John Wimberly, called the exact in Jonathan, was asking for prayer for a drug addiction. And his plea was, affected me, I certainly am not affected by that but I know friends, family, who are. And John, Jonathan, your plea was heard, certainly by me and all the DABers. And we do pray for you, we pray you do exactly what the Lord has called you to do and you’re doing that. You’re giving Him glory, you’re giving Him honor, you’re sharing that with us and building our faith. And I pray that the Holy Spirit will give you strength and power to overcome this addiction. I believe you said you were in training right now, in rehab of some sort. So, I pray that be successful, all glory given to the Lord. And I thank you for your spirit, you had a deep sense of Christ in your life, the Holy Spirit in your life and I’m encouraged by that. So, in Jesus name, just help him Father. Help him to just be confident in his faith and show him Your face. I pray for that in Jesus name. Amen.

Hi, everyone this is __ in Anjure. Calling from Dubai. I was going through and still going through a lot of depression because of some family issues with my wife and my wife’s family and my family. I ask for a humble prayer request to everyone around the world who is listening to the Daily Audio Bible, it will change a lot of things, the way I look at the life, so I ask everyone to ___ prayer to have a unity in the family. To get back the things that were normal to us. And thank you.

Hey Daily Audio Bible family this is Casco Mountain Aaron in New York State. I’m calling for prayers because I was diagnosed this week with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. I go in for my last few tests today, which will find whether the cancer is just in one large tumor in my heart and lungs. I say just, or if it has spread through my body. I’m ready to walk whatever path the Lord wants me to run and I’m at peace with this but my greatest fear in life would be not being here for my wife and sons. So, I can’t deny that I have definite fear here. So, I’m just asking for your prayers over that fear, over the diagnosis and that God willing, this has not spread through my body. Thank you all and I love you.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Thursday June 16, 2022 (NIV)

1 Kings 15:25-17:24

25 Jeroboam’s son, Nadab, took over Israel’s throne during the second year of Asa’s reign over Judah. Nadab ruled Israel for two years. 26 He committed evil in the eyes of the Eternal One, walking the wicked path of his father and causing the Israelites to live sinful lives.

27 Baasha (Ahijah’s son) of the house of Issachar plotted against him. Baasha killed his own anointed king, Nadab, at Gibbethon in Philistia. He did this while Nadab was leading Israel in a siege against Gibbethon. 28 Baasha struck Nadab down during the third year of Asa’s reign over Judah, and Baasha took Nadab’s place on the throne. 29 As soon as he gained the power of the throne, he killed the entire family of Jeroboam. He did not allow a single person to live; no one remained to challenge his throne. He annihilated them all, just as the Eternal had instructed through His servant, Ahijah the Shilonite. 30 He did this because of Jeroboam’s abhorrent wickedness that caused the Israelites to live sinful lives and that incurred the wrath of the Eternal God of Israel.

31 Is not the rest of Nadab’s story—his actions and lasting legacy—documented in the book of the chronicles of Israel’s kings?

32 Asa and Baasha, Israel’s king, warred against each other for their entire reigns. 33 During the 3rd year of Asa’s reign over Judah, Baasha (Ahijah’s son) became Israel’s king. He ruled from Tirzah for 24 years. 34 He committed evil in the Eternal’s eyes, walking the wicked path of Jeroboam and causing the Israelites to live sinful lives.

16 The Eternal’s message came to Jehu (Hanani’s son) against Baasha.

Eternal One: I gave you an amazing opportunity, Baasha. I lifted you up from the dirt of the ground and appointed you to lead My people Israel; but you have been foolish, have embraced the same path as Jeroboam, and have caused My people Israel to live sinful lives. You have provoked My wrath against their wickedness. Therefore I will devour you and all who serve you and belong to you. I will do to your house what I did to the house of Jeroboam (Nebat’s son). The hungry dogs will devour the remains of all those who belong to you if they die within the city walls. The birds in the sky will swoop down and eat up the remains of all those who belong to you if they die in the fields.

Is not the rest of Baasha’s story—his actions and lasting legacy—documented in the book of the chronicles of Israel’s kings? Baasha left this world to sleep with his fathers and was laid to rest in Tirzah. His son, Elah, then inherited the throne. So that is how it happened—the Eternal’s message, which He gave through the prophet Jehu (Hanani’s son), challenged Baasha and all those who belonged to him and served him. This took place because of the abhorrent wickedness he committed in the Eternal’s eyes. By his wicked deeds and by embracing the same wickedness as Jeroboam, Baasha provoked the anger of the Eternal.

During the 26th year of King Asa’s reign, Elah (Baasha’s son) took over the throne of Israel in Tirzah. He ruled two years. Zimri, Elah’s servant who was in charge of half his chariots, plotted against Elah. Elah was drinking excessively in Tirzah at Arza’s house. (Tirzah was in Arza’s control.) 10 Zimri murdered Elah during the 27th year of Asa’s reign over Judah, and he inherited the throne.

11 As soon as Zimri became king and gained the power of the throne, he killed every male in Baasha’s family. He did not leave a single survivor—no family or friends or servants to challenge his claim to the throne. 12 Zimri demolished Baasha’s entire household, just as the Eternal had said in His message against Baasha that He gave through the prophet Jehu. 13 He did this because of all the abhorrent wickedness committed by Baasha and by his son, Elah, which caused the Israelites to live sinful lives. This wickedness with their idols invoked the wrath of the Eternal God of Israel. 14 Is not the rest of Elah’s story—his actions and lasting legacy—documented in the book of the chronicles of Israel’s kings?

15 During the 27th year of Asa’s reign over Judah, Zimri ruled for seven days in Tirzah. Everyone was encamped around Gibbethon, which was in the possession of the Philistines, preparing to lay siege. 16 All those camped out heard the rumor, “Zimri plotted to kill the king, and he has succeeded in his scheme.” So that day the entire community of Israel appointed Omri, the military leader and Zimri’s commander, to be Israel’s king until a permanent king was given power. 17 Omri and the entire community of Israel abandoned their plans in Gibbethon and laid siege on Tirzah. 18 When Zimri perceived that the city had been taken over, he panicked and ran into the highest fortress in the king’s house and set fire to the house around him. He burned himself alive in the house 19 because of the abhorrent wickedness he had committed in the Eternal’s eyes. He had walked the wicked path of Jeroboam, causing the Israelites to live sinful lives. 20 Is not the rest of Zimri’s story—his actions and the record of his secret plot—documented in the book of the chronicles of Israel’s kings?

21 The community of Israel was split up into two separate groups. One group embraced Tibni (Ginath’s son) as king. The other group embraced Omri as king. 22 The group that followed Omri as king was more powerful and defeated the people who followed Tibni (Ginath’s son) as king. Tibni died, and Omri inherited the throne.

23 During the 31st year of Asa’s reign over Judah, Omri took over Israel’s throne. He reigned 12 years—6 of those years were in Tirzah. 24 He purchased Samaria Hill from Shemer for 150 pounds of silver. He developed a city on the hill and named the city Samaria after Shemer, the man from whom he had purchased the hill.

25 Omri committed evil in the Eternal’s eyes. He was more wicked than any wicked king who had lived before him, and there were a lot of wicked kings who lived before him. 26 He embraced the wicked path of Jeroboam (Nebat’s son), causing the Israelites to live sinful lives. Their worthless gods caused the wrath of the Eternal God of Israel to boil.

27 Is not the rest of Omri’s story—his actions demonstrating his might and lasting legacy—documented in the book of the chronicles of Israel’s kings? 28 Omri left this world to sleep with his fathers and was laid to rest in Samaria. His son, Ahab, then inherited the throne.

Nations often have several names. The Northern Kingdom is called “Israel” after the tribes who settled there, “Samaria” after its capital city, and the “House of Omri” after its founder. Omri is considered the founder of the Northern Kingdom, even though he isn’t the first king, because he establishes its capital in Samaria and is the first king buried there. In the ancient patriarchal system, the king is seen as the father of the country, so the entire nation is his household. He sees to the protection, nourishment, and advancement of his people, just as a father cares for his children. As long as the Northern Kingdom survives, it is called the “House of Omri” by many in honor of its first, and therefore greatest father.

29 Omri’s son, Ahab, took over Israel’s throne during the 38th year of Asa’s reign over Judah. Ahab (Omri’s son) ruled Israel in Samaria 22 years.

30 Ahab (Omri’s son) committed evil in the Eternal’s eyes. He was more wicked than all the wicked kings who lived before him. 31 Ahab was not content to commit the wickedness that Jeroboam (Nebat’s son) had. He went even further, marrying the Sidonian princess Jezebel and offering his loyalties and worship to Baal. Jezebel was King Ethbaal’s daughter, and Ethbaal was the king of the Sidonians.

32 He constructed an altar in honor of Baal in Baal’s temple in Samaria. 33 Ahab crafted a sacred pole there as well. Ahab incited the wrath of the Eternal God of Israel more than any king who had lived before him.

34 During Ahab’s reign, Hiel the Bethelite rebuilt Jericho. As he put down its foundations, he buried his firstborn, Abiram, beneath them.

Following the common pagan practice of burying children beneath cities to ensure favor from the gods, Hiel fulfills the expectation set by Joshua for anyone who rebuilds Jericho.

As he raised its gates, he buried his youngest son, Segub, beneath them, thinking this would ward off evil. This all happened just as the Eternal One said it would through the message he gave through Joshua, Nun’s son.[a]

17 Elijah the Tishbite, one of the Gilead settlers, spoke to Ahab.

Slowly the Israelite kings are drifting further and further away from God’s laws. Hoping to remedy this, the Lord sends a prophet to guide the kings. That prophet, Elijah, certainly lives up to his name, proclaiming his God (Eli) is the Eternal (jah)—Eli-jah. He uses many methods: demonstrating God’s power through miracles, reminding of God’s purpose through oracles, and acting out God’s will through his appearance. While his guidance sometimes reminds kings of the correct path and helps them return to it, ultimately nothing he can do will stop the Northern Kingdom’s destruction.

Elijah: As the Eternal lives—the True God who gives life to the Israelites, the God whom I serve—no rain or dew will touch the earth unless I give word.

The Baal cult is prominent both with the monarchy and with the general populace, so Elijah’s claims are extraordinary to people who believe Baal is the deity who provides or withholds rain.

The Eternal One gave him this message:

Eternal One: I want you to travel away from this place and go east. Keep yourself hidden near the Cherith stream, east of the Jordan. You will have water from the stream during this drought, and I will tell the birds to take care of you while you are hiding there.

Elijah did just as the Eternal had instructed him to do. He lived near the Cherith stream, east of the Jordan. The ravens did take care of him while he was there, just as the Lord said, bringing him a meal of bread and meat at sunrise and another meal of bread and meat at sunset. He satisfied his thirst by drinking from the stream. Soon the stream became dry because of the drought.

The Eternal One gave him this message:

Eternal One: Get up, and travel to Zarephath. It is in the possession of Sidon, which is outside Israel. Remain there, and do not leave for any reason. There is a widow in Zarephath whom I have told to take care of you.

10 Elijah got up and immediately traveled to Zarephath. He arrived at the city gate, and at that moment, a widow was picking up sticks nearby.

Elijah: Please bring me some water in a jar to quench my thirst.

11 (as she fetched the water) Also, could you please bring me a piece of bread?

Woman: 12 As certain as the Eternal One, your True God lives, I don’t have any bread. In fact, I am starving. I don’t have anything except for a bit of flour in a bowl and a few drops of oil in a jar. I was gathering sticks when you arrived to make a fire so that my son and I could eat one last bite of food and then die. It’s all over for us.

Elijah: 13 I assure you that it’s not over for you yet. Don’t be afraid. Continue what you were doing, but make a small bread cake for me first, and bring it here to me. Then you and your son may eat your own bread cakes. 14 This is the message of the Eternal God of Israel: “The flour and the oil will not run out until the moment when the Eternal showers the earth with rain.”

15 She did exactly as Elijah had instructed her to do, and everyone who lived in her house had food for days. 16 The bowl of flour and the jar of oil did not run out, just as the Eternal had said through Elijah.

17 A little while later, the son of the woman, the house’s mistress, grew fatally ill. His illness grew so intense that eventually he stopped breathing; he was dead.

Woman (to Elijah): 18 Why did this happen? What wickedness have I committed against you, man of God? Are you here as a reminder of past sin? Is that why my son died?

Elijah: 19 Bring your son to me.

Elijah then took the dead boy out of her arms, carried him upstairs to his own room, and laid him on his own bed.

Elijah: 20 O, my True God, the Eternal, have You brought this tragic death upon the son of the widow who is looking after me? If so, why would You do this to a woman who is serving You?

21 Elijah stretched himself out over the boy three different times, and he cried out to the Eternal again.

Elijah: O my True God, the Eternal, I beg you to bring this boy back to life.

This incredible act by the Eternal One is not only for the benefit of giving back the woman’s son so he could help with the support of the family, but it is also to demonstrate God’s powerful hand on Elijah.

22 The Eternal heard Elijah’s plea, and the boy was brought back to life. 23 Elijah brought the boy back down to his mother who was waiting anxiously in the house.

Elijah: Your son lives again.

Woman (rejoicing): 24 I now fully trust that you are a man of God and that the truth of the word of the Eternal dwells in your mouth.

Acts 10:24-48

24 They arrived in Caesarea the next afternoon just before three o’clock. Cornelius had anticipated their arrival and had assembled his relatives and close friends to welcome them. 25 When Peter and Cornelius met, Cornelius fell at Peter’s feet in worship, 26 but Peter helped him up.

Peter: Stand up, man! I am just a human being!

27 They talked and entered the house to meet the whole crowd inside.

Peter: 28 You know I am a Jew. We Jews consider it a breach of divine law to associate, much less share hospitality, with outsiders. But God has shown me something in recent days: I should no longer consider any human beneath me or unclean. 29 That’s why I made no objection when you invited me; rather, I came willingly. Now let me hear the story of why you invited me here.

Cornelius: 30 It was about this time of day four days ago when I was here, in my house, praying the customary midafternoon prayer. Suddenly a man appeared out of nowhere. His clothes were dazzling white, and he stood directly in front of me 31 and addressed me: “Cornelius, your prayer has been heard, and your kindness to the poor has been noticed by God. 32 God wants you to find a man in Joppa, Simon who is also called Peter, who is staying at the home of a tanner named Simon, near the seaside.” 33 I wasted no time, did just as I was told, and you have generously accepted my invitation. So here we are, in the presence of God, ready to take in all that the Lord has told you to tell us.

Peter: 34 It is clear to me now that God plays no favorites, 35 that God accepts every person whatever his or her culture or ethnic background, that God welcomes all who revere Him and do right. 36 You already know that God sent a message to the people of Israel; it was a message of peace, peace through Jesus the Anointed—who is King of all people. 37 You know this message spread through Judea, beginning in Galilee where John called people to be ritually cleansed through baptism.[a] 38 You know God identified Jesus as the uniquely chosen One by pouring out the Holy Spirit on Him, by empowering Him. You know Jesus went through the land doing good for all and healing all who were suffering under the oppression of the evil one, for God was with Him. 39 My friends and I stand as witnesses to all Jesus did in the region of Judea and the city of Jerusalem. The people of our capital city killed Him by hanging Him on a tree, 40 but God raised Him up on the third day and made it possible for us to see Him. 41 Not everyone was granted this privilege, only those of us whom God chose as witnesses. We actually ate and drank with Him after His resurrection. 42 He told us to spread His message to everyone and to tell them that He is the One whom God has chosen to be Judge, to make a just assessment of all people—both living and dead. 43 All the prophets tell us about Him and assert that every person who believes in Jesus receives forgiveness of sins through His name.

The true gospel is becoming increasingly clear as the church spreads and develops. What happens that day in Caesarea changes the face of Christianity forever. It builds a bridge from Jews to Gentiles, from insiders to outsiders, and sends the community of Jesus on a journey beyond the kind of religious and cultural barriers that all people erect. Through Peter’s short trip, the church makes an important journey toward reaching the ends of the earth because the message of Jesus is not for the Jews alone but for all people of all time. This is a hard lesson, and not everyone is eager to learn it.

44 Peter wasn’t planning to stop at this point, but the Holy Spirit suddenly interrupted and came upon all the people who were listening. 45-46 They began speaking in foreign languages (just as the Jewish disciples did on the Day of Pentecost), and their hearts overflowed in joyful praises to God. Peter’s friends from Joppa—all of them Jewish, all circumcised—were stunned to see that the gift of the Holy Spirit was poured out even on outsiders.

Peter: 47 Can anyone give any good reason not to ceremonially wash these people through baptism[b] as fellow disciples? After all, it’s obvious they have received the Holy Spirit just as we did on the Day of Pentecost.

48 So he had them baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. The new disciples asked him to stay for several more days.

Psalm 134

A song for those journeying to worship.

Praise the Eternal, all you who serve Him—
who stand ready to serve in the house of the Eternal through the night.

Proverbs 17:9-11

Those who forgive faults foster love,
but those who repeatedly recall them ruin relationships.
10 A single correction makes a more lasting impression on one who is wise
than a hundred lashes do on a fool.
11 Evil people are determined to rebel,
and so a merciless messenger will chase them down.
