2 Kings 8:1-9:13, Acts 16:16-40, Psalms 143:1-12, Proverbs 17:26

Today is the 25th day of June welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I’m it’s great to be here with you today as we bring another week to its conclusion and take the next step forward in the Scriptures. We have been working our way through the book of second Kings in the Old Testament. So, that is the next step forward because that’s where we left off. So, we’re reading from the New International Version this week. Second Kings chapter 8 verse 1 through 9, verse 13.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word. We thank You for another week in Your word. We thank You for bringing us through another week of life. And, so, now we are at this point where we look back. So often as we begin a week we look forward and see this week out in front of us that has yet to be written, a story has yet to be told. But here we are at the end of the week looking back at that very week that we looked at and now we can see. Did we walk with You? Did we cling to You? We can certainly see that You have brought us through. And, so, we are grateful, and we mark this moment. We are grateful that You have sustained us and that You will guide us by the power of Your Holy Spirit. So, as we release this week and prepare our hearts for the next one, we come with a grateful heart into Your presence thanking You for all of the days that have gone before that You have brought us through and all the days that are yet before us that You will bring us through. Lead us, teach us, guide us, correct us. Lead us into the truth we pray. In Jesus’ name we ask. Amen.

Announcements:

dailyaudiobible.com, that is home base, home of the Global Campfire and it’s where to find out what’s happening around here.

We’ve been talking about something that’s happening around here all week and that is something coming up on the seventh day of July. It’s our own little Daily Audio Bible holiday and it’s something that we call the Daily Audio Bible long walk. And I was talking several days ago. I think this is the 14th year of doing the Daily Audio Bible long walk. So, we’ve been at this for a while. It’s super simple to participate in this little Global Campfire holiday. It’s a day that finds itself very near the center of the year. So, here we are moving through the center of the year, and this is a time to carve out a little bit of time. Some time for reflection, maybe some time for pre-flexion, time for us to look forward and look back and recognize the grace of God in our lives through all of it. It’s an opportunity to go out into nature, whether near or far. Maybe down the block from where you live is a park and that’s where you love to go. Great! Maybe you have a favorite spot, t’s a couple hours away and you carved out the day for this, a day to be with God and go for a long walk and be able to pour out everything that’s in your heart and have no hurry, no rush, not…no alarms going off, no deadlines going off. Time, space, to drink in the beauty and allow the beauty of creation to be restorative to us, to pour out our hearts and have space and time and silence to allow God to fill us again and speak back and aim us in the direction that we should go. It has…I mean I have done it all of these years and it has paid huge dividends in my life and resetting and not just barreling through like we are prone to do. But resetting. Resetting some priorities. Looking at what the second half of the year is supposed to look like. And that part that I said, emptying out our hearts, being able to just not be in a rush, to be able to say everything that comes to mind, everything that’s in our hearts and listen back. It’s beautiful. And, so, yeah, that’s the thing that we do by ourselves with God but it’s something that thousands of us are doing together on the same day all over the earth. And, so, it’s a community experience as well. We post a Daily Audio Bible long walk post on the Daily Audio Bible Facebook page and invite everybody, like wherever you go, whatever it looks like, whatever your day is like, take a picture, shoot a video and come back and share your day, your story and all the sudden we have this beautiful mosaic of our community, little windows that open up into the beauty of God’s creation all over the earth. And I love it. And I’m looking forward to it. That is coming up the seventh day of July, so put that on your calendars.

If you want to partner with the Daily Audio Bible, if you find being around the Global Campfire is life-giving to you then thank you for being life-giving. We wouldn’t be here if we weren’t in this together all of these years. And, so, thank you for your partnership. There is a link on the homepage at dailyaudiobible.com. If you’re using the app, you can press the Give button in the upper right-hand corner, or the mailing address is PO Box 1996 Spring Hill Tennessee 37174.

And that’s it for today. I’m Brian I love you and I’ll be waiting for you here tomorrow.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hi DAB family this is Larabell from the Arab United Emirates. I’m just praying over some prayers please. So, my husband did vasectomy many years ago many years ago before we met each other. Before we got married, we agreed that we wanted to have children of our own. So, he did a surgery to undo the vasectomy and then we’ve been trying for a child without success. Then when he went to…to…went for checkup he found out that the tubes had…they’re blocked, the tubes were blocked again, and we don’t know how and the surgery was a very painful process for him. I don’t want him to go through that again so we decided to go for IVF. We literally used our last savings to do the IVF and…and we had…I was pregnant with twins, a boy and a girl and we lost the babies. Their names are Destin and Destiny. We lost the pregnancy. Now my husband hasn’t worked for a long time since COVID, and we lost a lot of money that we invested in Ukraine because of the war. We literally used our last money for this, and we are in a long-distance relationship. He’ll be coming to visit again soon. We don’t have the money to do the IVF again. We don’t know when or how we will have it, but I believe in miracles. I just wish that by some miracle I could take in. I…I don’t know if it’s too much to ask but I just want…I just want our babies and I know God can do it for us. So, please pray for us. Would you pray for us please?

Hi this is Red. Hey I’m calling in reply to Brian from Florida who had a great job, has a great job and because of stress and not seeing his family he’s thinking about making a change. And a lot of his friends think he’s crazy because of the money he is making. Well, I’m gonna tell you from experience Brian I’ve been faced with that three times. First time I changed jobs I had to take a $25,000 pay cut and then I was a firefighter chief. I retired from that job and last 15,000 and then another time a company bought up a company I was with, and I had taken another 15,000. And all those times it was hard, and it was tight, but we prayed to make the right choice and God came through each time. So, when there was a firefighter I did that for 40 years and 18 is a Fire Chief in a small community, lots of calls. I don’t know how many birthdays, anniversaries, thanksgivings, Christmases I missed because I was out on the runs. And you can’t get that back. Family is important and money cannot buy any of that time back. I’m trying to make it up with the grand babies, but you just can’t get that back. So, let’s pray OK. Father give Brian the wisdom the knowledge and the discernment to make the right choice. Let him know that you’re always faithful. You’re amazing. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Hey everybody this is Jonathan from Denver. I just wanted to call in and kind of follow up, give a little bit of an update and praise report. I think I last called in near the beginning of the month maybe end of May and I was really struggling feeling kind of left behind and like I had wandered off too far. And just this week I’m really experiencing a turning around and it feels like my heart is being softened. Feels like things are getting easier, feels like even when I run into day-to-day challenges, I am not forgetting that Christ is there for me. So, I just wanted to thank you all for your prayers know that I’m listening and I’m praying for you. I’m a few days left behind but I’m getting caught up and I love you all. Thank you so much.

Hi this is Pure Heart from Tennessee and I just wanted to call in to pray for Aaron in New York State that had just been diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Aaron I just wanted to say that the Holy Spirit did something to me as you were telling your story and you said that you just want to walk the path, whatever path God had for you. Man, it’s like something just burned from the inside out. Not sure what it meant but I mean it hit me like a ton of bricks and I just want to pray for you right now. God, I just thank You that You are the great physician. I thank You that there’s nothing too hard for You. And Father God I thank You that when man say no You can still say yes, that You are the author and finisher of our faith. Lord You’re our creator and Your word Father God tells us that You know our beginning and our end. It’s not up to man. And Father I just pray right now Father that You would just heal Aaron, just confound the doctors in the name of Jesus. Lord, I ask You to touch whatever they thought they’d seen in Aaron and just make it disappear in Jesus’ name. Lord, I stand with my DAB family and asking in faith Father God that You would just work a miracle for Your glory Father God and for Aaron’s good. Lord, I pray over…

Katie calling from Boston this message is for you. This is Simone calling in from Houston and I want to encourage you. When I tell you baby girl that God is a mind stabilizer, He can do that. I am 46 years old, and I have fought depression for over 30 years. Less than ten years ago I attempted to take my life. It has been difficult; it has been hard. I was on five or six different medications for depression because they didn’t know what it was because it was so severe. And I challenged God. I went to Him, and I said, you know, this is Your word, this is…You said…You told me that there’s nothing wrong with me so I’m going to believe You and stand in Your word. I found an amazing therapist. I did talk therapy and I just learned how to hold steadfast to God’s word. And today, over 10 years later I have not taken a single medication for depression and my bouts are less and less and when they do happen it’s not as long, maybe a day. So, just trust and believe that God can heal you and deliver you from it. I am proof. I am praying for you. Please continue to stand on His word. Stand on His word, stand on His word. Keep coming back here for encouragement. Just immerse yourself in the word of God and just hold onto His word because, you know, He will provide everything that you need and He will deliver, and He will heal. And His word again will not come back to him void. So, I will definitely keep you in prayer because I understand your fight. And stay encouraged sweet girl. Praying for you.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Saturday June 25, 2022 (NIV)

2 Kings 8:1-9:13

The Shunammite’s Land Restored

Now Elisha had said to the woman(A) whose son he had restored to life, “Go away with your family and stay for a while wherever you can, because the Lord has decreed a famine(B) in the land that will last seven years.”(C) The woman proceeded to do as the man of God said. She and her family went away and stayed in the land of the Philistines seven years.

At the end of the seven years she came back from the land of the Philistines and went to appeal to the king for her house and land. The king was talking to Gehazi, the servant of the man of God, and had said, “Tell me about all the great things Elisha has done.” Just as Gehazi was telling the king how Elisha had restored(D) the dead to life, the woman whose son Elisha had brought back to life came to appeal to the king for her house and land.

Gehazi said, “This is the woman, my lord the king, and this is her son whom Elisha restored to life.” The king asked the woman about it, and she told him.

Then he assigned an official to her case and said to him, “Give back everything that belonged to her, including all the income from her land from the day she left the country until now.”

Hazael Murders Ben-Hadad

Elisha went to Damascus,(E) and Ben-Hadad(F) king of Aram was ill. When the king was told, “The man of God has come all the way up here,” he said to Hazael,(G) “Take a gift(H) with you and go to meet the man of God. Consult(I) the Lord through him; ask him, ‘Will I recover from this illness?’”

Hazael went to meet Elisha, taking with him as a gift forty camel-loads of all the finest wares of Damascus. He went in and stood before him, and said, “Your son Ben-Hadad king of Aram has sent me to ask, ‘Will I recover from this illness?’”

10 Elisha answered, “Go and say to him, ‘You will certainly recover.’(J) Nevertheless,[a] the Lord has revealed to me that he will in fact die.” 11 He stared at him with a fixed gaze until Hazael was embarrassed.(K) Then the man of God began to weep.(L)

12 “Why is my lord weeping?” asked Hazael.

“Because I know the harm(M) you will do to the Israelites,” he answered. “You will set fire to their fortified places, kill their young men with the sword, dash(N) their little children(O) to the ground, and rip open(P) their pregnant women.”

13 Hazael said, “How could your servant, a mere dog,(Q) accomplish such a feat?”

“The Lord has shown me that you will become king(R) of Aram,” answered Elisha.

14 Then Hazael left Elisha and returned to his master. When Ben-Hadad asked, “What did Elisha say to you?” Hazael replied, “He told me that you would certainly recover.” 15 But the next day he took a thick cloth, soaked it in water and spread it over the king’s face, so that he died.(S) Then Hazael succeeded him as king.

Jehoram King of Judah(T)

16 In the fifth year of Joram(U) son of Ahab king of Israel, when Jehoshaphat was king of Judah, Jehoram(V) son of Jehoshaphat began his reign as king of Judah. 17 He was thirty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem eight years. 18 He followed the ways of the kings of Israel, as the house of Ahab had done, for he married a daughter(W) of Ahab. He did evil in the eyes of the Lord. 19 Nevertheless, for the sake of his servant David, the Lord was not willing to destroy(X) Judah. He had promised to maintain a lamp(Y) for David and his descendants forever.

20 In the time of Jehoram, Edom rebelled against Judah and set up its own king.(Z) 21 So Jehoram[b] went to Zair with all his chariots. The Edomites surrounded him and his chariot commanders, but he rose up and broke through by night; his army, however, fled back home. 22 To this day Edom has been in rebellion(AA) against Judah. Libnah(AB) revolted at the same time.

23 As for the other events of Jehoram’s reign, and all he did, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Judah? 24 Jehoram rested with his ancestors and was buried with them in the City of David. And Ahaziah his son succeeded him as king.

Ahaziah King of Judah(AC)

25 In the twelfth(AD) year of Joram son of Ahab king of Israel, Ahaziah son of Jehoram king of Judah began to reign. 26 Ahaziah was twenty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem one year. His mother’s name was Athaliah,(AE) a granddaughter of Omri(AF) king of Israel. 27 He followed the ways of the house of Ahab(AG) and did evil(AH) in the eyes of the Lord, as the house of Ahab had done, for he was related by marriage to Ahab’s family.

28 Ahaziah went with Joram son of Ahab to war against Hazael king of Aram at Ramoth Gilead.(AI) The Arameans wounded Joram; 29 so King Joram returned to Jezreel(AJ) to recover from the wounds the Arameans had inflicted on him at Ramoth[c] in his battle with Hazael(AK) king of Aram.

Then Ahaziah(AL) son of Jehoram king of Judah went down to Jezreel to see Joram son of Ahab, because he had been wounded.

Jehu Anointed King of Israel

The prophet Elisha summoned a man from the company(AM) of the prophets and said to him, “Tuck your cloak into your belt,(AN) take this flask of olive oil(AO) with you and go to Ramoth Gilead.(AP) When you get there, look for Jehu son of Jehoshaphat, the son of Nimshi. Go to him, get him away from his companions and take him into an inner room. Then take the flask and pour the oil(AQ) on his head and declare, ‘This is what the Lord says: I anoint you king over Israel.’ Then open the door and run; don’t delay!”

So the young prophet went to Ramoth Gilead. When he arrived, he found the army officers sitting together. “I have a message for you, commander,” he said.

“For which of us?” asked Jehu.

“For you, commander,” he replied.

Jehu got up and went into the house. Then the prophet poured the oil(AR) on Jehu’s head and declared, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘I anoint you king over the Lord’s people Israel. You are to destroy the house of Ahab your master, and I will avenge(AS) the blood of my servants(AT) the prophets and the blood of all the Lord’s servants shed by Jezebel.(AU) The whole house(AV) of Ahab will perish. I will cut off from Ahab every last male(AW) in Israel—slave or free.[d] I will make the house of Ahab like the house of Jeroboam(AX) son of Nebat and like the house of Baasha(AY) son of Ahijah. 10 As for Jezebel, dogs(AZ) will devour her on the plot of ground at Jezreel, and no one will bury her.’” Then he opened the door and ran.

11 When Jehu went out to his fellow officers, one of them asked him, “Is everything all right? Why did this maniac(BA) come to you?”

“You know the man and the sort of things he says,” Jehu replied.

12 “That’s not true!” they said. “Tell us.”

Jehu said, “Here is what he told me: ‘This is what the Lord says: I anoint you king over Israel.’”

13 They quickly took their cloaks and spread(BB) them under him on the bare steps. Then they blew the trumpet(BC) and shouted, “Jehu is king!”

Acts 16:16-40

Paul and Silas in Prison

16 Once when we were going to the place of prayer,(A) we were met by a female slave who had a spirit(B) by which she predicted the future. She earned a great deal of money for her owners by fortune-telling. 17 She followed Paul and the rest of us, shouting, “These men are servants of the Most High God,(C) who are telling you the way to be saved.” 18 She kept this up for many days. Finally Paul became so annoyed that he turned around and said to the spirit, “In the name of Jesus Christ I command you to come out of her!” At that moment the spirit left her.(D)

19 When her owners realized that their hope of making money(E) was gone, they seized Paul and Silas(F) and dragged(G) them into the marketplace to face the authorities. 20 They brought them before the magistrates and said, “These men are Jews, and are throwing our city into an uproar(H) 21 by advocating customs unlawful for us Romans(I) to accept or practice.”(J)

22 The crowd joined in the attack against Paul and Silas, and the magistrates ordered them to be stripped and beaten with rods.(K) 23 After they had been severely flogged, they were thrown into prison, and the jailer(L) was commanded to guard them carefully. 24 When he received these orders, he put them in the inner cell and fastened their feet in the stocks.(M)

25 About midnight(N) Paul and Silas(O) were praying and singing hymns(P) to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them. 26 Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shaken.(Q) At once all the prison doors flew open,(R) and everyone’s chains came loose.(S) 27 The jailer woke up, and when he saw the prison doors open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself because he thought the prisoners had escaped.(T) 28 But Paul shouted, “Don’t harm yourself! We are all here!”

29 The jailer called for lights, rushed in and fell trembling before Paul and Silas.(U) 30 He then brought them out and asked, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”(V)

31 They replied, “Believe(W) in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved(X)—you and your household.”(Y) 32 Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all the others in his house. 33 At that hour of the night(Z) the jailer took them and washed their wounds; then immediately he and all his household were baptized.(AA) 34 The jailer brought them into his house and set a meal before them; he(AB) was filled with joy because he had come to believe in God—he and his whole household.

35 When it was daylight, the magistrates sent their officers to the jailer with the order: “Release those men.” 36 The jailer(AC) told Paul, “The magistrates have ordered that you and Silas be released. Now you can leave. Go in peace.”(AD)

37 But Paul said to the officers: “They beat us publicly without a trial, even though we are Roman citizens,(AE) and threw us into prison. And now do they want to get rid of us quietly? No! Let them come themselves and escort us out.”

38 The officers reported this to the magistrates, and when they heard that Paul and Silas were Roman citizens, they were alarmed.(AF) 39 They came to appease them and escorted them from the prison, requesting them to leave the city.(AG) 40 After Paul and Silas came out of the prison, they went to Lydia’s house,(AH) where they met with the brothers and sisters(AI) and encouraged them. Then they left.

Psalm 143

Psalm 143

A psalm of David.

Lord, hear my prayer,(A)
listen to my cry for mercy;(B)
in your faithfulness(C) and righteousness(D)
come to my relief.
Do not bring your servant into judgment,
for no one living is righteous(E) before you.
The enemy pursues me,
he crushes me to the ground;
he makes me dwell in the darkness(F)
like those long dead.(G)
So my spirit grows faint within me;
my heart within me is dismayed.(H)
I remember(I) the days of long ago;
I meditate(J) on all your works
and consider what your hands have done.
I spread out my hands(K) to you;
I thirst for you like a parched land.[a]

Answer me quickly,(L) Lord;
my spirit fails.(M)
Do not hide your face(N) from me
or I will be like those who go down to the pit.
Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love,(O)
for I have put my trust in you.
Show me the way(P) I should go,
for to you I entrust my life.(Q)
Rescue me(R) from my enemies,(S) Lord,
for I hide myself in you.
10 Teach me(T) to do your will,
for you are my God;(U)
may your good Spirit
lead(V) me on level ground.(W)

11 For your name’s sake,(X) Lord, preserve my life;(Y)
in your righteousness,(Z) bring me out of trouble.
12 In your unfailing love, silence my enemies;(AA)
destroy all my foes,(AB)
for I am your servant.(AC)

2 Kings 6:1-7:20, Acts 15:36-16:15, Psalms 142:1-7, Proverbs 17:24-25

Today is the 24th day of June, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian, it’s great to be here with you guys today, around the Global Campfire as we gather and move forward together, which takes us back to the spot that we left off and that is second Kings, at this point. And we are kinda traveling alongside the prophet Elisha, getting to know him as well, as well as all of the kings that reigned during his time, his lifetime, his ministry and so, let’s pick up the story second Kings chapters 6 and 7 today.

Commentary:

Okay, let’s go in reverse order today and start with the book of Acts and work our way back to what we’re reading in second Kings. I just want to point out what the Bible tells us in the book of Acts, and that is that, Paul and Barnabas got into a pretty significant argument. A pretty significant disagreement, to the point that they needed to part company, after they had traveled all over the Roman Empire, preaching the good news, they needed to part company and continue that work in the name of Jesus separately. And the disagreement, is over a person Mark, John Mark. Though very, very likely the author of the Gospel of Mark, the very first gospel ever written. So, Mark was on that first missionary journey but in the city of Pamphylia he left them and returned to his home and that struck Paul, really wrong. As if he wasn’t fully and completely devoted and so he didn’t want Mark on this second missionary journey. And so, they had a disagreement and that disagreement left them still passionate for the Gospel and still called to speak the Gospel and in fact, to travel throughout the known world and speak the Gospel but not together. And so, we are embarking on Paul’s second missionary journey and it’s a whole new cast. Paul is the same person but he won’t be traveling with Barnabas this time or Mark, he’ll be traveling with Silas. And we will continue to follow along with that missionary journey, as we continue with the book of Acts.

But now, back in the book of second Kings. So much happens in our reading today an ax head floats back to the top of the water, miraculously. The Aramaeans, who are wanting to kind of ambush and fight against Israel, they can’t really make their plans, because Elisha hears from the Lord what the plans are and the Israelites are prepared. So, the Aramaeans find out where Elisha is, surround the city and when Elisha’s assistant wakes up and sees the Army, he freaks out and of course Elisha asks for his eyes to be open and then he can see that there are more with them, than any number of Army that is against them. They are struck with blindness. So, the key, like they can’t understand exactly what’s going on. And so, Elisha, the person that they’re trying to capture comes out and says this is the wrong place and they believe him and he’s like, I’ll show you the right place and they believe him and he marches them right into the capital of Israel, which is the city of Samaria, the northern kingdom. And some, this Army gets inside the city walls and then their eyes are opened, right, and this should be like a mighty victory, this Army could be destroyed, they have nowhere to go, but instead what Elisha instructs is that they should have food and water and be sent back to their master. That actually ends the ambushes and the fighting by the bands of Aramaeans who come to raid the land. So, in other words, God shows up and deals with the problem in a way that only God can. The Aramaeans are shown mercy, at the same time that they’re shown the very power of the God of Israel, the most high God. And so, respect for the most high God and respect for the mercy that was shown ends the conflict. And then, we have the story of the Aramaeans coming back at a later time to besiege and take the city, the capital city of Samaria. And so, they’ve surrounded and blockaded the city and people are beginning to starve, like all the resources that were inside the city are depleted and no one can leave and go get more and so whatever’s in the city is what’s in the city. That’s what they would do, starve them out, weaken them, demoralize them, wait until they were weak and until they could break in and put…put up little resistance. And so, that’s what’s going on here. The King of Israel becomes so demoralized and frustrated that he decides, he’s not waiting on the Lord anymore, because the Lord isn’t showing up and he’s going to behead Elisha, the prophet of God. Elisha has advanced warning about this and he tells the king about this time tomorrow, essentially, about this time tomorrow, the problem will be over. Of course, that’s hard to believe, but that’s what happens and it’s really interesting, the lesson for us to learn and how this happened. There are four lepers outside the city, they can come into the city, but if they come into the city, they’re going to die like everybody else in the city. They’re lepers and so they’re not being picked on so much outside the city walls and they can kind of scrounge around but they’re still going to die eventually. And so, they decide really, they have three options in they’re all bad options and there’s only one option that has even the remotest chance that they could live and that is to surrender to the enemy. If the Aramaeans kill them, they were going to die anyway but if they live, maybe they can find a morsel of food and live. And so, that’s what they do, they go to the Aramaean camp to surrender and seek mercy and nobody’s there. And that’s fascinating because the Lord had given the sound of a mighty army coming and so they fled. It’s like a ghost village out there, this blockade that has been starving the city to death and putting people through unbelievable atrocity. It’s like a ghost town out there, there’s nobody there. And so, these men, they go into camp or into a tent and they eat and they plunder. And they go into another one and they get some more stuff and they hide the stuff. And it’s like, they have everything they could ever need. And then they realize, people are still starving just like they were starving, back in the city of Samaria people are dying and they look at each other and say some really fascinating things. What we’re doing is not right. This is a day of good news and we are keeping it to ourselves. The implications start to become apparent, because what’s going on here? These lepers have discovered that they have been rescued, that everybody can live. God has rescued them. And so, they’re enjoying the bounty, the benefit of being rescued and not having the fear that they had just moments before, but nobody else knows that. And they realize, it’s not right what we’re doing out here. This is a day of good news and we’re keeping it to ourselves. When we look at this through a spiritual lens, we have to realize that we were all surrounded and starving. And were going to be defeated and weakened and demoralized, our enemy was trying to stamp us out. And then we found out we were rescued and that the enemy has been banished and has no authority over us in any sort of way at all, anymore. We have been rescued forever and we can easily bask in that, when there are, there are people who are still starving and dying and are surrounded and don’t know that rescue is here. And so, we find ourselves, kind of with the same sentiment, what we’re doing isn’t right. This is a day of good news and we’re keeping it to ourselves. Something for us to think about, pretty strongly today. Maybe, even today, is the day to not keep it to ourselves.

Prayer:

And so, Holy Spirit, we invite You into that, we know that we have all been guilty of enjoying the blessing that You have poured down upon us, in the rescue of our very souls. And we can very, very easily, kinda think that we need to hoard that, that we have the out crowd and the in crowd, when what our role is, is to eliminate that, so that all can know, so that all might be rescued, so that we might be doing Your work in this world, telling the good news, that rescue is here and you don’t have to stay stranded behind these walls anymore. You can come out, freedom is here. Holy Spirit let this sink into us, so that we can understand that every thought, word and deed, everything about us is about You. Come, Jesus we pray, in your mighty name we ask. Amen.

Announcements:

dailyaudiobible.com, that’s home base and that’s where you can find out what’s going on around here. We’ve been talking about it. It’s coming up in less than two weeks now, two weeks from yesterday. The Daily Audio Bible Long Walk that occurs every seventh day of July, it’s our own little, private holiday. And it’s so simple. It’s a day that we carve out some time, set it aside, go out into the beauty of God’s creation, drink it in, and go for a long walk with God. Not only to awaken our senses to all the life that is happening around us and all that God has just showered us with that we mostly ignore, but also to regroup and reset, to actually have some time to speak out before the Lord everything that’s in our hearts, like the empty out everything that’s going on and have time to not leave anything back, like just to empty it out of us and to give space and time for God to respond and fill us again, anew, as we contemplate what the second half of the year is supposed to be aimed at. And it’s beautiful because we’re doing this for our own lives and our own relationship with God, but we’re not doing it alone, even though we’re doing it alone. We’re doing it alone with God but our brothers and sisters all over the world, around this Global Campfire are also enjoying the beauty of where they are, on this earth. And what makes it a community experience is that, we put a post on our Daily Audio Bible Facebook page, for the Long Walk and then invite everybody like, look while you’re out there, while you’re enjoying it, snap a picture, take a video, something to commemorate the day that you spent. And they’re so many of us who have pictures and videos like from…from years and years and years of doing this. Maybe this is your first year. This is where you start that collection of mementos, of remembrances, of the times that you set aside and go for a long walk with God and what that did to your life and to the rest of your year and we come back and share and post a picture, post a video, into that post and all of a sudden, we open windows into the world. Like beauty all over the earth, all over the earth, and then we get to share together, in each other’s stories. It’s a beautiful thing. I love it very much. It’s a treasure around here. And so, make plans for that on the seventh day of July, the Daily Audio Bible Long Walk. I’m looking forward to that.

If you want to partner with the Daily Audio Bible. If the mission that we share in common around the Global Campfire, to bring the spoken word of God, read fresh, every day and offered freely to whoever will listen, anywhere on this planet, any time of day or night and to recognize that that’s a rhythm, we show up every day and we begin to realize, this isn’t a solitary endeavor. We are in this together and it makes all the difference, to move through the Scriptures and through a year together in community. 2 Kings 6-7

An Axhead Floats

The company(A) of the prophets said to Elisha, “Look, the place where we meet with you is too small for us. Let us go to the Jordan, where each of us can get a pole; and let us build a place there for us to meet.”

And he said, “Go.”

Then one of them said, “Won’t you please come with your servants?”

“I will,” Elisha replied. And he went with them.

They went to the Jordan and began to cut down trees. As one of them was cutting down a tree, the iron axhead fell into the water. “Oh no, my lord!” he cried out. “It was borrowed!”

The man of God asked, “Where did it fall?” When he showed him the place, Elisha cut a stick and threw(B) it there, and made the iron float. “Lift it out,” he said. Then the man reached out his hand and took it.

Elisha Traps Blinded Arameans

Now the king of Aram was at war with Israel. After conferring with his officers, he said, “I will set up my camp in such and such a place.”

The man of God sent word to the king(C) of Israel: “Beware of passing that place, because the Arameans are going down there.” 10 So the king of Israel checked on the place indicated by the man of God. Time and again Elisha warned(D) the king, so that he was on his guard in such places.

11 This enraged the king of Aram. He summoned his officers and demanded of them, “Tell me! Which of us is on the side of the king of Israel?”

12 “None of us, my lord the king(E),” said one of his officers, “but Elisha, the prophet who is in Israel, tells the king of Israel the very words you speak in your bedroom.”

13 “Go, find out where he is,” the king ordered, “so I can send men and capture him.” The report came back: “He is in Dothan.”(F) 14 Then he sent(G) horses and chariots and a strong force there. They went by night and surrounded the city.

15 When the servant of the man of God got up and went out early the next morning, an army with horses and chariots had surrounded the city. “Oh no, my lord! What shall we do?” the servant asked.

16 “Don’t be afraid,”(H) the prophet answered. “Those who are with us are more(I) than those who are with them.”

17 And Elisha prayed, “Open his eyes, Lord, so that he may see.” Then the Lord opened the servant’s eyes, and he looked and saw the hills full of horses and chariots(J) of fire all around Elisha.

18 As the enemy came down toward him, Elisha prayed to the Lord, “Strike this army with blindness.”(K) So he struck them with blindness, as Elisha had asked.

19 Elisha told them, “This is not the road and this is not the city. Follow me, and I will lead you to the man you are looking for.” And he led them to Samaria.

20 After they entered the city, Elisha said, “Lord, open the eyes of these men so they can see.” Then the Lord opened their eyes and they looked, and there they were, inside Samaria.

21 When the king of Israel saw them, he asked Elisha, “Shall I kill them, my father?(L) Shall I kill them?”

22 “Do not kill them,” he answered. “Would you kill those you have captured(M) with your own sword or bow? Set food and water before them so that they may eat and drink and then go back to their master.” 23 So he prepared a great feast for them, and after they had finished eating and drinking, he sent them away, and they returned to their master. So the bands(N) from Aram stopped raiding Israel’s territory.

Famine in Besieged Samaria

24 Some time later, Ben-Hadad(O) king of Aram mobilized his entire army and marched up and laid siege(P) to Samaria. 25 There was a great famine(Q) in the city; the siege lasted so long that a donkey’s head sold for eighty shekels[a] of silver, and a quarter of a cab[b] of seed pods[c](R) for five shekels.[d]

26 As the king of Israel was passing by on the wall, a woman cried to him, “Help me, my lord the king!”

27 The king replied, “If the Lord does not help you, where can I get help for you? From the threshing floor? From the winepress?” 28 Then he asked her, “What’s the matter?”

She answered, “This woman said to me, ‘Give up your son so we may eat him today, and tomorrow we’ll eat my son.’ 29 So we cooked my son and ate(S) him. The next day I said to her, ‘Give up your son so we may eat him,’ but she had hidden him.”

30 When the king heard the woman’s words, he tore(T) his robes. As he went along the wall, the people looked, and they saw that, under his robes, he had sackcloth(U) on his body. 31 He said, “May God deal with me, be it ever so severely, if the head of Elisha son of Shaphat remains on his shoulders today!”

32 Now Elisha was sitting in his house, and the elders(V) were sitting with him. The king sent a messenger ahead, but before he arrived, Elisha said to the elders, “Don’t you see how this murderer(W) is sending someone to cut off my head?(X) Look, when the messenger comes, shut the door and hold it shut against him. Is not the sound of his master’s footsteps behind him?” 33 While he was still talking to them, the messenger came down to him.

The king said, “This disaster is from the Lord. Why should I wait(Y) for the Lord any longer?”

Elisha replied, “Hear the word of the Lord. This is what the Lord says: About this time tomorrow, a seah[e] of the finest flour will sell for a shekel[f] and two seahs[g] of barley for a shekel(Z) at the gate of Samaria.”

The officer on whose arm the king was leaning(AA) said to the man of God, “Look, even if the Lord should open the floodgates(AB) of the heavens, could this happen?”

“You will see it with your own eyes,” answered Elisha, “but you will not eat(AC) any of it!”

The Siege Lifted

Now there were four men with leprosy[h](AD) at the entrance of the city gate. They said to each other, “Why stay here until we die? If we say, ‘We’ll go into the city’—the famine is there, and we will die. And if we stay here, we will die. So let’s go over to the camp of the Arameans and surrender. If they spare us, we live; if they kill us, then we die.”

At dusk they got up and went to the camp of the Arameans. When they reached the edge of the camp, no one was there, for the Lord had caused the Arameans to hear the sound(AE) of chariots and horses and a great army, so that they said to one another, “Look, the king of Israel has hired(AF) the Hittite(AG) and Egyptian kings to attack us!” So they got up and fled(AH) in the dusk and abandoned their tents and their horses and donkeys. They left the camp as it was and ran for their lives.

The men who had leprosy(AI) reached the edge of the camp, entered one of the tents and ate and drank. Then they took silver, gold and clothes, and went off and hid them. They returned and entered another tent and took some things from it and hid them also.

Then they said to each other, “What we’re doing is not right. This is a day of good news and we are keeping it to ourselves. If we wait until daylight, punishment will overtake us. Let’s go at once and report this to the royal palace.”

10 So they went and called out to the city gatekeepers and told them, “We went into the Aramean camp and no one was there—not a sound of anyone—only tethered horses and donkeys, and the tents left just as they were.” 11 The gatekeepers shouted the news, and it was reported within the palace.

12 The king got up in the night and said to his officers, “I will tell you what the Arameans have done to us. They know we are starving; so they have left the camp to hide(AJ) in the countryside, thinking, ‘They will surely come out, and then we will take them alive and get into the city.’”

13 One of his officers answered, “Have some men take five of the horses that are left in the city. Their plight will be like that of all the Israelites left here—yes, they will only be like all these Israelites who are doomed. So let us send them to find out what happened.”

14 So they selected two chariots with their horses, and the king sent them after the Aramean army. He commanded the drivers, “Go and find out what has happened.” 15 They followed them as far as the Jordan, and they found the whole road strewn with the clothing and equipment the Arameans had thrown away in their headlong flight.(AK) So the messengers returned and reported to the king. 16 Then the people went out and plundered(AL) the camp of the Arameans. So a seah of the finest flour sold for a shekel, and two seahs of barley sold for a shekel,(AM) as the Lord had said.

17 Now the king had put the officer on whose arm he leaned in charge of the gate, and the people trampled him in the gateway, and he died,(AN) just as the man of God had foretold when the king came down to his house. 18 It happened as the man of God had said to the king: “About this time tomorrow, a seah of the finest flour will sell for a shekel and two seahs of barley for a shekel at the gate of Samaria.”

19 The officer had said to the man of God, “Look, even if the Lord should open the floodgates(AO) of the heavens, could this happen?” The man of God had replied, “You will see it with your own eyes, but you will not eat any of it!” 20 And that is exactly what happened to him, for the people trampled him in the gateway, and he died.

Acts 15:36-16:15

Disagreement Between Paul and Barnabas

36 Some time later Paul said to Barnabas, “Let us go back and visit the believers in all the towns(A) where we preached the word of the Lord(B) and see how they are doing.” 37 Barnabas wanted to take John, also called Mark,(C) with them, 38 but Paul did not think it wise to take him, because he had deserted them(D) in Pamphylia and had not continued with them in the work. 39 They had such a sharp disagreement that they parted company. Barnabas took Mark and sailed for Cyprus, 40 but Paul chose Silas(E) and left, commended by the believers to the grace of the Lord.(F) 41 He went through Syria(G) and Cilicia,(H) strengthening the churches.(I)

Timothy Joins Paul and Silas

16 Paul came to Derbe and then to Lystra,(J) where a disciple named Timothy(K) lived, whose mother was Jewish and a believer(L) but whose father was a Greek. The believers(M) at Lystra and Iconium(N) spoke well of him. Paul wanted to take him along on the journey, so he circumcised him because of the Jews who lived in that area, for they all knew that his father was a Greek.(O) As they traveled from town to town, they delivered the decisions reached by the apostles and elders(P) in Jerusalem(Q) for the people to obey.(R) So the churches were strengthened(S) in the faith and grew daily in numbers.(T)

Paul’s Vision of the Man of Macedonia

Paul and his companions traveled throughout the region of Phrygia(U) and Galatia,(V) having been kept by the Holy Spirit from preaching the word in the province of Asia.(W) When they came to the border of Mysia, they tried to enter Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus(X) would not allow them to. So they passed by Mysia and went down to Troas.(Y) During the night Paul had a vision(Z) of a man of Macedonia(AA) standing and begging him, “Come over to Macedonia and help us.” 10 After Paul had seen the vision, we(AB) got ready at once to leave for Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel(AC) to them.

Lydia’s Conversion in Philippi

11 From Troas(AD) we put out to sea and sailed straight for Samothrace, and the next day we went on to Neapolis. 12 From there we traveled to Philippi,(AE) a Roman colony and the leading city of that district[a] of Macedonia.(AF) And we stayed there several days.

13 On the Sabbath(AG) we went outside the city gate to the river, where we expected to find a place of prayer. We sat down and began to speak to the women who had gathered there. 14 One of those listening was a woman from the city of Thyatira(AH) named Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth. She was a worshiper of God. The Lord opened her heart(AI) to respond to Paul’s message. 15 When she and the members of her household(AJ) were baptized,(AK) she invited us to her home. “If you consider me a believer in the Lord,” she said, “come and stay at my house.” And she persuaded us.

2 Kings 4:18-5:27, Acts 15:1-35, Psalms 141:1-10, Proverbs 17:23

Today is the 23rd day of June welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I am Brian it is great to be here with you today as we gather around the Global Campfire and move forward together on our adventure through the Scriptures this year. And the trail leads us back out into second Kings where we are getting kinda moved in and getting to know the lay of the land and getting to know the prophet, Elisha. And we kinda left the story in the middle yesterday. A woman and her husband had built Elisha a room on the top of their house. He had begun to stay there. He wanted to do something nice for her. In the end he told her about this time next year you will have a son and she did and that’s where we pick up the story. So, today second Kings chapter 4 verse 18 through 5 verse 27.

Commentary:

Okay. So, in the book of Acts today we have this retelling of what is known as the Jerusalem Council and in an understated way the Bible tells us something that happened that so monumentally shifted things. And we talked about this just a few days ago when we were with Peter up on top of the roof and the sheets coming down with the unclean animals and him going to Caesarea to minister to Cornelius who was a Roman centurion, a Gentile, and yet the Holy Spirit fell upon his household, and they were saved. Well…Paul and Barnabas are off on a missionary journey throughout the Roman empire, and they are indeed going to the Jewish community in whatever city they go to but so often they’re pushed out by the Jewish community, but the Gentiles are listening, and the Lord is doing a mighty work among Jew and Gentile alike even though they are facing an incredible amount of opposition. So, Hebrew people, Jewish people who were religiously devout, fully committed to the Mosaic law, fully committed to obeying God’s through the law, they never really had the concept that accepting Jesus was some kind of new religion of some sort. It was a Jewish thing. Jesus was the Hebrew Messiah. Things indeed were being fulfilled but for the Jewish people. And the whole thing was in a Jewish context. And, so, it’s not unfair to see how they would assume that. So, even Pharisees, even religious scholars were believing in Jesus, but again they never thought it was outside of a Jewish context. And, so, some believers went to some of the other churches and among the Gentiles and preached that the Gentiles…and I’m quoting from the book of Acts, “the Gentiles must be circumcised and required to keep the law of Moses.” They said, “unless you are circumcised according to the custom taught by Moses, you cannot be saved.” Well, that’s going to be a problem for Gentile people who don’t understand why circumcision would have anything to do with anything. Like you would need to be in a Hebrew context to understand the meaning of circumcision and the covenant that it represents. So, this causes confusion, confusion among the Gentile believers who are like, “are we doing this right? Is this the way to go? Like what are we supposed to do here?” This causes Paul and Barnabas to go to Jerusalem where the Jerusalem Council occurred. And people argued at this Council as told in the book of Acts on both sides. So, on the one side you have Hebrew believers in Jesus who believe Jesus was fully in a Jewish context and was for the Jewish people and what His work did was for the Jewish people. And, so, if you wanted to be in with Jesus you needed to kinda convert to Judaism and begin to obey the Mosaic law, the law of God and then honor Jesus and worship Him as the Jewish Messiah, the anointed One, of God, whereas people like Peter and Paul and Barnabas had already seen what God was choosing to do. They had been out in ministry among Gentile people and were watching God make the decision. Like if the Lord sends his Holy Spirit upon people well then God’s making that decision. And that was the argument in favor of the Gentiles. And, so, ultimately a decision was made that, no Gentiles don’t need to convert to Judaism and begin to try to bear the burden of the Mosaic law when even Jewish people have never been able to bear that burden. They shouldn’t be burdened in other words. Gentile people shouldn’t be burdened with things that they don’t even know what they are. Like they have never ever, ever had that contextualized. They’ve been Pagans worshiping many false gods and now they want to come to the one true God. And, so, they don’t need, you know, a mile long list of rules and regulations that they gotta even understand what the context is before they can begin to serve God. And, so, they wrote a letter and sent it back. And that is beautiful and that indeed affirms all are welcome. Like all of us who are Gentile are welcome into the family of God. But that’s not the end of the story and we’ll see it crop up throughout the letters of Paul, especially. Because even though a determination or a decision was made at the Council not everyone was on board with that decision. That has been true throughout all of church history. There are many church councils that we can look at and there were a lot of debate and a lot of people branded as heretics after the fact when they wouldn’t get on board with what everyone had decided. And, so, not everyone was on board with the Jerusalem Council. This is profoundly monumental though in the life of the church, not only because of…because of its inclusiveness, inviting everyone in the world to come to Jesus, but because of the social repercussions. Up until this time Jewish people were considered strange, but a people who were practicing a very ancient religion and were supposed to separate themselves. And, so, they’re in the Roman Empire and they are allowed to worship only their God. Like they have a little bit of, essentially, religious exemption because in the Roman Empire this is a polytheistic culture. They worship many many gods and it’s wide open. In the Roman Empire you can worship any god that you want to worship but there are also the gods of the Empire and those gods everybody has to worship. You can worship any other gods that you want to in addition, but you have to give your loyalty to the gods of the Empire, the gods who made Rome great. Obviously, that will not work for a Hebrew person, and they were given an exemption. They did not have to do that. They didn’t have to go sacrifice to the gods of the Empire etc. etc. etc. but everybody else did. What we see happening at the Jerusalem Council is a distinction is being made. People aren’t going to welcome Gentile’s wholesale into the Jewish community. And, so, a line gets drawn and people who are following Jesus then began to be separated from Orthodox practicing Jews because these Christians, Jewish or Gentile, they are allowing Gentiles, they are allowing something that’s not allowed. And, so, it could be argued that they’re not really practicing Judaism anymore. And that’s what happens. They get shoved into the margins where they don’t have any place of refuge. And as Christians resist they get marginalized themselves until they are…well…for a period of time really considered the problem and tremendous persecution breaks out. So, understanding that what we read today really really affected the world going forward is important for us to sort of understand the lay of the land or the context, how this all happened and how it is that the faith was passed down through all of the generations until we had the opportunity to believe as well and participate in the family of God. And, so, let’s remember this because it’s really important to our history.

Prayer:

Father, we love You. We love Your word. We thank You for Your word. We thank You for Your kindness in our lives to allow us to have it and that we can pour over it and look into the stories and see how things moved out from Jerusalem and how they ended up in our time and in our hearts. And Father, we see that the early church has to grapple with things that they don’t understand and deal with problems that look pretty complicated, and we thank You for Your guidance certainly in that time, by the power of Your Holy Spirit but we also face things are pretty complicated in our own lives and we need that same power. We need Your Holy Spirit to lead us into all truth. And, so, that is what we pray for once again. Come Holy Spirit in the name of Jesus we ask. Amen.

Announcements:

dailyaudiobible.com that’s homebase and where you find out what is going on around here. And we’ve been talking about what’s going on around here this week.

Our Daily Audio Bible family holiday is coming up on the seventh day of July, also known as the Daily Audio Bible long walk, an opportunity for us to carve out a little bit of time, to set aside a single day out of the year to recognize that we’re in the middle of the year and regrouping is often a good thing and reflection is a good thing. So, we take that day and go out into nature, into beauty, maybe a lake that’s nearby, maybe a park that’s down the street, maybe a national Park that’s hours away, maybe somewhere that no one else would find beautiful but it’s very very meaningful to you, we go there, and we take a long walk with God. Like, time stands still. No hurry. No rush. An opportunity to say everything that’s in our hearts that we been meaning to find time to say having a conversation with God, with no alarm to tell us our time is up with God. It’s an opportunity to go for that long, long walk like you would when you fell in love and realize how beautiful the world is that God has made and how He is loving us and restoring us through beauty and how interesting it is to see how much life is all around us all happening all around us and we’re so rarely paying attention. And regrouping and paying attention to what the second half of the year is going to look like. It’s been a remarkable thing to do as a community all over the world all of these years and it’s something that I look forward to personally every year. Like to know that there’s a day that is set aside for exactly this. And obviously if we’re going for a long walk in nature somewhere beautiful by ourselves spending the day with God it’s like a solitary thing to do, but it’s also a beautiful community experience here, which makes it the Daily Audio Bible holiday for us because even though we are where we are, there are thousands of brothers and sisters all over the world that are doing the same thing where they are. And, so, we put a post on our Facebook page for the Daily Audio Bible for the long walk and just invite you. Like, when you go you’re probably gonna have your phone with you, you’re probably not gonna go without your phone. The trick is to not be on your phone all day in this time that you’ve set aside to go for a long walk with God, but you probably want to take a picture. You might want to shoot a video. You might want something to remember the day that you spent on a long walk with God. And just choose a picture that you took or choose a video or whatever and post that to the Daily Audio Bible Facebook page in the long walk post and all of the sudden we get to do it all over again. Like we get to kinda scroll through and see the amazing beauty of the earth all over the world all on the same day. And it’s so fun. I love it. I love it so very very much. Looking forward to that coming up on the seventh day of July. So, that’s two weeks from today. So, make plans for that. I’m very much looking forward to enjoying it together as a community for another year.

And, as always, if you want to partner with Daily Audio Bible here as we approach the summer months, thank you profoundly. Thank you humbly. We wouldn’t be here if we were not in this together around the Global Campfire. So, thank you for your partnership. There is a link on the homepage at dailyaudiobible.com. The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Thursday June 23, 2022 (NIV)

2 Kings 4:18-5:27

18 The child grew, and one day he went out to his father, who was with the reapers.(A) 19 He said to his father, “My head! My head!”

His father told a servant, “Carry him to his mother.” 20 After the servant had lifted him up and carried him to his mother, the boy sat on her lap until noon, and then he died. 21 She went up and laid him on the bed(B) of the man of God, then shut the door and went out.

22 She called her husband and said, “Please send me one of the servants and a donkey so I can go to the man of God quickly and return.”

23 “Why go to him today?” he asked. “It’s not the New Moon(C) or the Sabbath.”

“That’s all right,” she said.

24 She saddled the donkey and said to her servant, “Lead on; don’t slow down for me unless I tell you.” 25 So she set out and came to the man of God at Mount Carmel.(D)

When he saw her in the distance, the man of God said to his servant Gehazi, “Look! There’s the Shunammite! 26 Run to meet her and ask her, ‘Are you all right? Is your husband all right? Is your child all right?’”

“Everything is all right,” she said.

27 When she reached the man of God at the mountain, she took hold of his feet. Gehazi came over to push her away, but the man of God said, “Leave her alone! She is in bitter distress,(E) but the Lord has hidden it from me and has not told me why.”

28 “Did I ask you for a son, my lord?” she said. “Didn’t I tell you, ‘Don’t raise my hopes’?”

29 Elisha said to Gehazi, “Tuck your cloak into your belt,(F) take my staff(G) in your hand and run. Don’t greet anyone you meet, and if anyone greets you, do not answer. Lay my staff on the boy’s face.”

30 But the child’s mother said, “As surely as the Lord lives and as you live, I will not leave you.” So he got up and followed her.

31 Gehazi went on ahead and laid the staff on the boy’s face, but there was no sound or response. So Gehazi went back to meet Elisha and told him, “The boy has not awakened.”

32 When Elisha reached the house, there was the boy lying dead on his couch.(H) 33 He went in, shut the door on the two of them and prayed(I) to the Lord. 34 Then he got on the bed and lay on the boy, mouth to mouth, eyes to eyes, hands to hands. As he stretched(J) himself out on him, the boy’s body grew warm. 35 Elisha turned away and walked back and forth in the room and then got on the bed and stretched out on him once more. The boy sneezed seven times(K) and opened his eyes.(L)

36 Elisha summoned Gehazi and said, “Call the Shunammite.” And he did. When she came, he said, “Take your son.”(M) 37 She came in, fell at his feet and bowed to the ground. Then she took her son and went out.

Death in the Pot

38 Elisha returned to Gilgal(N) and there was a famine(O) in that region. While the company of the prophets was meeting with him, he said to his servant, “Put on the large pot and cook some stew for these prophets.”

39 One of them went out into the fields to gather herbs and found a wild vine and picked as many of its gourds as his garment could hold. When he returned, he cut them up into the pot of stew, though no one knew what they were. 40 The stew was poured out for the men, but as they began to eat it, they cried out, “Man of God, there is death in the pot!” And they could not eat it.

41 Elisha said, “Get some flour.” He put it into the pot and said, “Serve it to the people to eat.” And there was nothing harmful in the pot.(P)

Feeding of a Hundred

42 A man came from Baal Shalishah,(Q) bringing the man of God twenty loaves(R) of barley bread(S) baked from the first ripe grain, along with some heads of new grain. “Give it to the people to eat,” Elisha said.

43 “How can I set this before a hundred men?” his servant asked.

But Elisha answered, “Give it to the people to eat.(T) For this is what the Lord says: ‘They will eat and have some left over.(U)’” 44 Then he set it before them, and they ate and had some left over, according to the word of the Lord.

Naaman Healed of Leprosy

Now Naaman was commander of the army of the king of Aram.(V) He was a great man in the sight of his master and highly regarded, because through him the Lord had given victory to Aram. He was a valiant soldier, but he had leprosy.[a](W)

Now bands of raiders(X) from Aram had gone out and had taken captive a young girl from Israel, and she served Naaman’s wife. She said to her mistress, “If only my master would see the prophet(Y) who is in Samaria! He would cure him of his leprosy.”

Naaman went to his master and told him what the girl from Israel had said. “By all means, go,” the king of Aram replied. “I will send a letter to the king of Israel.” So Naaman left, taking with him ten talents[b] of silver, six thousand shekels[c] of gold and ten sets of clothing.(Z) The letter that he took to the king of Israel read: “With this letter I am sending my servant Naaman to you so that you may cure him of his leprosy.”

As soon as the king of Israel read the letter,(AA) he tore his robes and said, “Am I God?(AB) Can I kill and bring back to life?(AC) Why does this fellow send someone to me to be cured of his leprosy? See how he is trying to pick a quarrel(AD) with me!”

When Elisha the man of God heard that the king of Israel had torn his robes, he sent him this message: “Why have you torn your robes? Have the man come to me and he will know that there is a prophet(AE) in Israel.” So Naaman went with his horses and chariots and stopped at the door of Elisha’s house. 10 Elisha sent a messenger to say to him, “Go, wash(AF) yourself seven times(AG) in the Jordan, and your flesh will be restored and you will be cleansed.”

11 But Naaman went away angry and said, “I thought that he would surely come out to me and stand and call on the name of the Lord his God, wave his hand(AH) over the spot and cure me of my leprosy. 12 Are not Abana and Pharpar, the rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters(AI) of Israel? Couldn’t I wash in them and be cleansed?” So he turned and went off in a rage.(AJ)

13 Naaman’s servants went to him and said, “My father,(AK) if the prophet had told you to do some great thing, would you not have done it? How much more, then, when he tells you, ‘Wash and be cleansed’!” 14 So he went down and dipped himself in the Jordan seven times,(AL) as the man of God had told him, and his flesh was restored(AM) and became clean like that of a young boy.(AN)

15 Then Naaman and all his attendants went back to the man of God(AO). He stood before him and said, “Now I know(AP) that there is no God in all the world except in Israel. So please accept a gift(AQ) from your servant.”

16 The prophet answered, “As surely as the Lord lives, whom I serve, I will not accept a thing.” And even though Naaman urged him, he refused.(AR)

17 “If you will not,” said Naaman, “please let me, your servant, be given as much earth(AS) as a pair of mules can carry, for your servant will never again make burnt offerings and sacrifices to any other god but the Lord. 18 But may the Lord forgive your servant for this one thing: When my master enters the temple of Rimmon to bow down and he is leaning(AT) on my arm and I have to bow there also—when I bow down in the temple of Rimmon, may the Lord forgive your servant for this.”

19 “Go in peace,”(AU) Elisha said.

After Naaman had traveled some distance, 20 Gehazi, the servant of Elisha the man of God, said to himself, “My master was too easy on Naaman, this Aramean, by not accepting from him what he brought. As surely as the Lord(AV) lives, I will run after him and get something from him.”

21 So Gehazi hurried after Naaman. When Naaman saw him running toward him, he got down from the chariot to meet him. “Is everything all right?” he asked.

22 “Everything is all right,” Gehazi answered. “My master sent me to say, ‘Two young men from the company of the prophets have just come to me from the hill country of Ephraim. Please give them a talent[d] of silver and two sets of clothing.’”(AW)

23 “By all means, take two talents,” said Naaman. He urged Gehazi to accept them, and then tied up the two talents of silver in two bags, with two sets of clothing. He gave them to two of his servants, and they carried them ahead of Gehazi. 24 When Gehazi came to the hill, he took the things from the servants and put them away in the house. He sent the men away and they left.

25 When he went in and stood before his master, Elisha asked him, “Where have you been, Gehazi?”

“Your servant didn’t go anywhere,” Gehazi answered.

26 But Elisha said to him, “Was not my spirit with you when the man got down from his chariot to meet you? Is this the time(AX) to take money or to accept clothes—or olive groves and vineyards, or flocks and herds, or male and female slaves?(AY) 27 Naaman’s leprosy(AZ) will cling to you and to your descendants forever.” Then Gehazi(BA) went from Elisha’s presence and his skin was leprous—it had become as white as snow.(BB)

Acts 15:1-35

The Council at Jerusalem

15 Certain people(A) came down from Judea to Antioch and were teaching the believers:(B) “Unless you are circumcised,(C) according to the custom taught by Moses,(D) you cannot be saved.” This brought Paul and Barnabas into sharp dispute and debate with them. So Paul and Barnabas were appointed, along with some other believers, to go up to Jerusalem(E) to see the apostles and elders(F) about this question. The church sent them on their way, and as they traveled through Phoenicia(G) and Samaria, they told how the Gentiles had been converted.(H) This news made all the believers very glad. When they came to Jerusalem, they were welcomed by the church and the apostles and elders, to whom they reported everything God had done through them.(I)

Then some of the believers who belonged to the party(J) of the Pharisees(K) stood up and said, “The Gentiles must be circumcised and required to keep the law of Moses.”(L)

The apostles and elders met to consider this question. After much discussion, Peter got up and addressed them: “Brothers, you know that some time ago God made a choice among you that the Gentiles might hear from my lips the message of the gospel and believe.(M) God, who knows the heart,(N) showed that he accepted them by giving the Holy Spirit to them,(O) just as he did to us. He did not discriminate between us and them,(P) for he purified their hearts by faith.(Q) 10 Now then, why do you try to test God(R) by putting on the necks of Gentiles a yoke(S) that neither we nor our ancestors have been able to bear? 11 No! We believe it is through the grace(T) of our Lord Jesus that we are saved, just as they are.”

12 The whole assembly became silent as they listened to Barnabas and Paul telling about the signs and wonders(U) God had done among the Gentiles through them.(V) 13 When they finished, James(W) spoke up. “Brothers,” he said, “listen to me. 14 Simon[a] has described to us how God first intervened to choose a people for his name from the Gentiles.(X) 15 The words of the prophets are in agreement with this, as it is written:

16 “‘After this I will return
and rebuild David’s fallen tent.
Its ruins I will rebuild,
and I will restore it,
17 that the rest of mankind may seek the Lord,
even all the Gentiles who bear my name,
says the Lord, who does these things’[b](Y)
18 things known from long ago.[c](Z)

19 “It is my judgment, therefore, that we should not make it difficult for the Gentiles who are turning to God. 20 Instead we should write to them, telling them to abstain from food polluted by idols,(AA) from sexual immorality,(AB) from the meat of strangled animals and from blood.(AC) 21 For the law of Moses has been preached in every city from the earliest times and is read in the synagogues on every Sabbath.”(AD)

The Council’s Letter to Gentile Believers

22 Then the apostles and elders,(AE) with the whole church, decided to choose some of their own men and send them to Antioch(AF) with Paul and Barnabas. They chose Judas (called Barsabbas) and Silas,(AG) men who were leaders among the believers. 23 With them they sent the following letter:

The apostles and elders, your brothers,

To the Gentile believers in Antioch,(AH) Syria(AI) and Cilicia:(AJ)

Greetings.(AK)

24 We have heard that some went out from us without our authorization and disturbed you, troubling your minds by what they said.(AL) 25 So we all agreed to choose some men and send them to you with our dear friends Barnabas and Paul— 26 men who have risked their lives(AM) for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. 27 Therefore we are sending Judas and Silas(AN) to confirm by word of mouth what we are writing. 28 It seemed good to the Holy Spirit(AO) and to us not to burden you with anything beyond the following requirements: 29 You are to abstain from food sacrificed to idols, from blood, from the meat of strangled animals and from sexual immorality.(AP) You will do well to avoid these things.

Farewell.

30 So the men were sent off and went down to Antioch, where they gathered the church together and delivered the letter. 31 The people read it and were glad for its encouraging message. 32 Judas and Silas,(AQ) who themselves were prophets,(AR) said much to encourage and strengthen the believers. 33 After spending some time there, they were sent off by the believers with the blessing of peace(AS) to return to those who had sent them. [34] [d] 35 But Paul and Barnabas remained in Antioch, where they and many others taught and preached(AT) the word of the Lord.(AU)

Psalm 141

Psalm 141

A psalm of David.

I call to you, Lord, come quickly(A) to me;
hear me(B) when I call to you.
May my prayer be set before you like incense;(C)
may the lifting up of my hands(D) be like the evening sacrifice.(E)

Set a guard over my mouth,(F) Lord;
keep watch over the door of my lips.(G)
Do not let my heart(H) be drawn to what is evil
so that I take part in wicked deeds(I)
along with those who are evildoers;
do not let me eat their delicacies.(J)

Let a righteous man strike me—that is a kindness;
let him rebuke me(K)—that is oil on my head.(L)
My head will not refuse it,
for my prayer will still be against the deeds of evildoers.

Their rulers will be thrown down from the cliffs,(M)
and the wicked will learn that my words were well spoken.
They will say, “As one plows(N) and breaks up the earth,(O)
so our bones have been scattered at the mouth(P) of the grave.”

But my eyes are fixed(Q) on you, Sovereign Lord;
in you I take refuge(R)—do not give me over to death.

2 Kings 3:1-4:17, Acts 14:8-28, Psalm 140:1-13, Proverbs 17:22

Today is the 22nd day of June, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian, it’s great to be here with you today, as we do what we do every day, gather and take the next step forward together. And we are getting ourselves moved into the Book of second Kings and the times of the prophet Elisha and the kings that were in that time period, both in the northern Kingdom of Israel and in the southern Kingdom of Judah. So, let’s pick up the story, 2 Kings chapter 3 verse 1 through 4 verse 17 today.

Commentary:

Okay, a couple of things for us to sort of us to stay in the story with or at least to look at from the portion of the stories that we’re reading right now. In the Book of 2 Kings, Elisha is clearly the leading prophet in the land, as he’s taking on the mantle of Elijah. And in one of the scenes today with Elisha, he goes to a city named Shunem and there’s a lady there, she’s married to a man, and they have means, they have some resources, and they end up building a room for Elisha to stay in when he’s passing through and he begins to do that. And he begins to inquire, what could be done for her, what they could ask the king or even military commanders, or the Lord, what does she need. And she kind of, essentially says, I have my home and I have my own people, like I have what I need but what she doesn’t have is a child. And so, Elisha calls her and tells her, about this time next year, you will hold a son in your arms. That is her greatest hope. And so, she’s like, no, my lord, please, don’t mislead your servant, right. Like, don’t get my hopes up for no reason. This has been a hopeless place in my life. Really interesting what Elisha said, when he told her she would have a child, about this time next year. That is a very similar scene to what Sarah, Abraham’s wife, heard, when the promised child Isaac, was to be born. And as it turned out, the woman became pregnant and about that time next year, she gave birth to a son.

Then, in the Book of Acts we well, we actually concluded Paul’s first missionary journey. Today, they made it back to Antioch. So, they had been out and about in the different cities and we saw this seen today, that is almost comical if it weren’t so tragic, just how erratic things were for the people bringing the Gospel of Jesus. So, we’re in a city called Lystra. And the Apostle Paul is speaking, he’s teaching the good news. And there’s a person who has been lame and never walked and Paul can see that he has faith and he calls them out right, like in the middle of church, like right in the middle of it all. Stand up on your feet and the person stood up on their feet and began to walk. This is a sign and a wonder in a pagan town. So, they determined that yes, indeed this is miraculous. Yes indeed, this is divine. It is of the gods and so they decide that Paul and Barnabas are actually Zeus and Hermes and the next thing you know a crowd is gathering from the city and the priests of Zeus are coming with animals to sacrifice to Paul and Barnabas. So, that’s the height of heights, right. Like, nobody that I know has ever wanted to be sacrificed to, but nobody’s ever tried to offer a sacrifice to them, to appease them, so that they would extend their goodwill upon them. This is what’s happening. So, Paul and Barnabas are freaking out about this, this is like the exact opposite of what they’re after, they’re trying to reveal Jesus. They are trying to expose God to these pagan people who are worshiping false gods and instead, it seems that the people think that they are those false gods, embodied. So, they got to run into the crowd and say we’re not gods, we are humans. Instead, the crowd turns on them and stones Paul and leaves him for dead. That is a massive shift to be happening on the same day. Like, one extreme to the other. Paul wasn’t dead though. But, man, he was left for dead. So, I mean a person who gets stoned to death, you can only imagine broken bones and the blood and the suffering of something like that, it seems hard to kind of imagine. Paul was fully stoned and left for dead and he gets back up and goes into the city. And they just continue their journey. That’s a miraculous thing in and of itself that they just continued their journey, strengthening those who have come to believe, but it is also a picture of the fact that the good news of the Gospel has always faced resistance from the very beginning. In fact, the kind of resistance that they are facing right now, is really unheard of, for most of us. This kind of resistance and persecution certainly does exist in the world and people do, indeed, die for the name of Jesus, because they will not denounce their faith, in certain parts of the world. But, for most of us, this isn’t really an issue. But what we need to see here is, is that it was an issue for the early church. They had to learn to find joy while they were enduring hardship. Otherwise, immense discouragement would descend upon the people and they would fall into depression and fall away right. So, they had to find a way to encourage themselves. One of the things that we will see, as we continue through the New Testament, is that one of the ways that they found, to encourage themselves was to embrace endurance. As we continue on in our journey in the New Testament, and get into the letters, we will see that the theme of endurance is everywhere. Everywhere, people are having to endure. So, I’m just pointing it out right now, because we’re seeing it. Like, this is part of the recipe of the early church, enduring hardship and finding joy, just to be associated with the name of Jesus, just to know you are in the family of God, just be in, brought them joy and when they suffered, they counted it joy, because Jesus had suffered. And so, to suffer along with Jesus, alongside Jesus, as Jesus did, was considered something to hold onto dearly, which really is in a sharp contrast to the way that we perceive things usually. And so, let’s consider those things that we are having to endure right now and how we look at those things. And let’s begin to realize that just because something is hard doesn’t mean it’s bad. And these difficulties that we face and learn to endure, shape us, just like the wilderness and we are seeing endurance shape the early church in the book of Acts.

Prayer:

And so, Father, we don’t like endurance, we would prefer not to participate in endurance. We would prefer that we could just ask You to take everything away and that it would just go away. And yet, we would become very, very weak, when we actually need to mature and become strong. So, help us to properly interpret the things that we have to endure, because sometimes there are things that we have to contend for and we are pleading with You. At other times, You are inviting us in, to walk-through something because we are going to gain knowledge and wisdom that we cannot get any other way. Help us to have a discerning heart. Help us to listen to Your Holy Spirit, so that we understand and properly interpret what’s going on with us. Come, Holy Spirit, into this, we pray, in the name of Jesus, we ask. Amen.

Announcements:

dailyaudiobible.com, that’s home base, that’s where you find out what’s going on around here. I mentioned yesterday and will continue to mention that we have something special coming up on the seventh day of July, and that is our own little Global Campfire holiday, known as the Daily Audio Bible long walk. And I kind of unpacked that a little bit yesterday but I think the first long walk was in 2008. So, this would be the 14th one, coming up here, 14 years in a row we’ve had this holiday, so it’s a tradition around here and it’s quite simple. We have reached the halfway point of the year and as we move through the halfway time in the year, it’s a good time to reflect, we’re halfway through. So, we reflect back on where we’ve come from but we’re also, so we’re just kind of re-setting ourselves for the second half of the year, so that we finish strong, and so, in the middle, is where we find ourselves and we just simply give ourselves permission to take a day. Not a random day, an intentional day off to spend with God. We may talk to God every day. Hopefully we do. Hopefully lots. Hopefully it’s an ongoing conversation but so rarely do we have the time to have uninterrupted time with most anybody, including God. And so, all of our communications are quick texts, quick posts, quick calls. We don’t ever really have the time to just let time stand still. Although, we have the capacity for that. If we’ve ever fallen in love, we know that time can stand still and we do all kinds of romantic silly things, long walks being one of them. Where so much communication can happen. So, we take a day, in the middle of the year. The 7th of July and go somewhere beautiful and that somewhere beautiful for you can be the closest park to where you live or can be hours away, to a place that’s so beautiful and has so much meaning for you. It doesn’t really matter, the important thing is to go outside and enjoy what God has made, what He has bestowed upon us to enjoy. And we take a day and we’re spending a lot of the time in silence and we’re not filling our minds with all kinds of visual and all kinds of inputs. We’re just observing the beauty of creation and drinking it in, it’s very healing, to just walk and sit and watch the squirrels and the bunnies and hear the birds and the breeze on our face. It’s so restorative but then to be spending that time with God, where we actually are unhurried and uninterrupted, where we can say everything that is in our hearts. Everything that needs to be said and also take unhurried time to just walk in silence and feel the presence of the Lord and hear as He responds to us and gives us advance words about what the second half of our year is supposed to look like. I mean, this can sound like something that we should do on a regular basis and that’s true but we just don’t. But as we’ve, kind of immersed ourselves in the Scriptures and we’re halfway through and we’re moving toward the second half, this is the time, to give ourselves a day of unhurried time in our lives. I mean, every day, we come around the Global Campfire and so often I say like we’re just exhaling, we’re releasing everything that’s going on, we’re giving ourselves permission for a few minutes of this day, to be devoted to the Scriptures. And all those anxieties and all of the stresses that come with life, we can go get all those things, like we can pick up where we left off, but it’s remarkable how often the Bible is speaking so specifically to us, that, when we leave the Global Campfire and go back into our day, our posture has changed. Some things have shifted, we’ve reminded ourselves of the story that we’re in and what’s most important to us, becomes more and more clear. Imagine what a day with God could do, to reprioritize the trajectory of our lives. And so, make plans for that, for 7 July. There will be thousands and thousands and thousands of us all over the world, going for a long walk with God. And so that’s a very individual thing, but what makes it a communal thing is that we can share with each other. And so, we’ll put a post for the Long Walk up on the Daily Audio Bible Facebook page, and we can all come back and share pictures or videos. Cause, that’s the thing, like, we’re on this Long Walk and we don’t want to forget. So, maybe we take pictures and but we can share those things and they become, those pictures become windows, into each other’s lives. Whether it’s a little video that you took of where you are, or little video of you, kind of talking about where you are and sending greetings or pictures, whatever. Something that commemorates your Long Walk and we get to share those together and it’s beautiful. It’s absolutely stunning to me, not only to see the beauty of creation all over the world and to be able to get a glimpse into where brothers and sisters are and what it looks like where they live and to be able to share the same thing, myself. But just to drink in the beauty all over the world and just to hear the stories as we share with one another of our Long Walks, makes it a community experience. And so, that is coming up on the seventh day of July, which is two weeks from tomorrow. So, let’s make plans for that.

2 Kings 3:1-4:17

Moab Revolts

Joram[a](A) son of Ahab became king of Israel in Samaria in the eighteenth year of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, and he reigned twelve years. He did evil(B) in the eyes of the Lord, but not as his father(C) and mother had done. He got rid of the sacred stone(D) of Baal that his father had made. Nevertheless he clung to the sins(E) of Jeroboam son of Nebat, which he had caused Israel to commit; he did not turn away from them.

Now Mesha king of Moab(F) raised sheep, and he had to pay the king of Israel a tribute of a hundred thousand lambs(G) and the wool of a hundred thousand rams. But after Ahab died, the king of Moab rebelled(H) against the king of Israel. So at that time King Joram set out from Samaria and mobilized all Israel. He also sent this message to Jehoshaphat king of Judah: “The king of Moab has rebelled against me. Will you go with me to fight(I) against Moab?”

“I will go with you,” he replied. “I am as you are, my people as your people, my horses as your horses.”

“By what route shall we attack?” he asked.

“Through the Desert of Edom,” he answered.

So the king of Israel set out with the king of Judah and the king of Edom.(J) After a roundabout march of seven days, the army had no more water for themselves or for the animals with them.

10 “What!” exclaimed the king of Israel. “Has the Lord called us three kings together only to deliver us into the hands of Moab?”

11 But Jehoshaphat asked, “Is there no prophet of the Lord here, through whom we may inquire(K) of the Lord?”

An officer of the king of Israel answered, “Elisha(L) son of Shaphat is here. He used to pour water on the hands of Elijah.[b](M)

12 Jehoshaphat said, “The word(N) of the Lord is with him.” So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat and the king of Edom went down to him.

13 Elisha said to the king of Israel, “Why do you want to involve me? Go to the prophets of your father and the prophets of your mother.”

“No,” the king of Israel answered, “because it was the Lord who called us three kings together to deliver us into the hands of Moab.”

14 Elisha said, “As surely as the Lord Almighty lives, whom I serve, if I did not have respect for the presence of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, I would not pay any attention to you. 15 But now bring me a harpist.”(O)

While the harpist was playing, the hand(P) of the Lord came on Elisha 16 and he said, “This is what the Lord says: I will fill this valley with pools of water. 17 For this is what the Lord says: You will see neither wind nor rain, yet this valley will be filled with water,(Q) and you, your cattle and your other animals will drink. 18 This is an easy(R) thing in the eyes of the Lord; he will also deliver Moab into your hands. 19 You will overthrow every fortified city and every major town. You will cut down every good tree, stop up all the springs, and ruin every good field with stones.”

20 The next morning, about the time(S) for offering the sacrifice, there it was—water flowing from the direction of Edom! And the land was filled with water.(T)

21 Now all the Moabites had heard that the kings had come to fight against them; so every man, young and old, who could bear arms was called up and stationed on the border. 22 When they got up early in the morning, the sun was shining on the water. To the Moabites across the way, the water looked red—like blood. 23 “That’s blood!” they said. “Those kings must have fought and slaughtered each other. Now to the plunder, Moab!”

24 But when the Moabites came to the camp of Israel, the Israelites rose up and fought them until they fled. And the Israelites invaded the land and slaughtered the Moabites. 25 They destroyed the towns, and each man threw a stone on every good field until it was covered. They stopped up all the springs and cut down every good tree. Only Kir Hareseth(U) was left with its stones in place, but men armed with slings surrounded it and attacked it.

26 When the king of Moab saw that the battle had gone against him, he took with him seven hundred swordsmen to break through to the king of Edom, but they failed. 27 Then he took his firstborn(V) son, who was to succeed him as king, and offered him as a sacrifice on the city wall. The fury against Israel was great; they withdrew and returned to their own land.

The Widow’s Olive Oil

The wife of a man from the company(W) of the prophets cried out to Elisha, “Your servant my husband is dead, and you know that he revered the Lord. But now his creditor(X) is coming to take my two boys as his slaves.”

Elisha replied to her, “How can I help you? Tell me, what do you have in your house?”

“Your servant has nothing there at all,” she said, “except a small jar of olive oil.”(Y)

Elisha said, “Go around and ask all your neighbors for empty jars. Don’t ask for just a few. Then go inside and shut the door behind you and your sons. Pour oil into all the jars, and as each is filled, put it to one side.”

She left him and shut the door behind her and her sons. They brought the jars to her and she kept pouring. When all the jars were full, she said to her son, “Bring me another one.”

But he replied, “There is not a jar left.” Then the oil stopped flowing.

She went and told the man of God,(Z) and he said, “Go, sell the oil and pay your debts. You and your sons can live on what is left.”

The Shunammite’s Son Restored to Life

One day Elisha went to Shunem.(AA) And a well-to-do woman was there, who urged him to stay for a meal. So whenever he came by, he stopped there to eat. She said to her husband, “I know that this man who often comes our way is a holy man of God. 10 Let’s make a small room on the roof and put in it a bed and a table, a chair and a lamp for him. Then he can stay(AB) there whenever he comes to us.”

11 One day when Elisha came, he went up to his room and lay down there. 12 He said to his servant Gehazi, “Call the Shunammite.”(AC) So he called her, and she stood before him. 13 Elisha said to him, “Tell her, ‘You have gone to all this trouble for us. Now what can be done for you? Can we speak on your behalf to the king or the commander of the army?’”

She replied, “I have a home among my own people.”

14 “What can be done for her?” Elisha asked.

Gehazi said, “She has no son, and her husband is old.”

15 Then Elisha said, “Call her.” So he called her, and she stood in the doorway. 16 “About this time(AD) next year,” Elisha said, “you will hold a son in your arms.”

“No, my lord!” she objected. “Please, man of God, don’t mislead your servant!”

17 But the woman became pregnant, and the next year about that same time she gave birth to a son, just as Elisha had told her.

Acts 14:8-28

In Lystra and Derbe

In Lystra there sat a man who was lame. He had been that way from birth(A) and had never walked. He listened to Paul as he was speaking. Paul looked directly at him, saw that he had faith to be healed(B) 10 and called out, “Stand up on your feet!”(C) At that, the man jumped up and began to walk.(D)

11 When the crowd saw what Paul had done, they shouted in the Lycaonian language, “The gods have come down to us in human form!”(E) 12 Barnabas they called Zeus, and Paul they called Hermes because he was the chief speaker.(F) 13 The priest of Zeus, whose temple was just outside the city, brought bulls and wreaths to the city gates because he and the crowd wanted to offer sacrifices to them.

14 But when the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard of this, they tore their clothes(G) and rushed out into the crowd, shouting: 15 “Friends, why are you doing this? We too are only human,(H) like you. We are bringing you good news,(I) telling you to turn from these worthless things(J) to the living God,(K) who made the heavens and the earth(L) and the sea and everything in them.(M) 16 In the past, he let(N) all nations go their own way.(O) 17 Yet he has not left himself without testimony:(P) He has shown kindness by giving you rain from heaven and crops in their seasons;(Q) he provides you with plenty of food and fills your hearts with joy.”(R) 18 Even with these words, they had difficulty keeping the crowd from sacrificing to them.

19 Then some Jews(S) came from Antioch and Iconium(T) and won the crowd over. They stoned Paul(U) and dragged him outside the city, thinking he was dead. 20 But after the disciples(V) had gathered around him, he got up and went back into the city. The next day he and Barnabas left for Derbe.

The Return to Antioch in Syria

21 They preached the gospel(W) in that city and won a large number(X) of disciples. Then they returned to Lystra, Iconium(Y) and Antioch, 22 strengthening the disciples and encouraging them to remain true to the faith.(Z) “We must go through many hardships(AA) to enter the kingdom of God,” they said. 23 Paul and Barnabas appointed elders[a](AB) for them in each church and, with prayer and fasting,(AC) committed them to the Lord,(AD) in whom they had put their trust. 24 After going through Pisidia, they came into Pamphylia,(AE) 25 and when they had preached the word in Perga, they went down to Attalia.

26 From Attalia they sailed back to Antioch,(AF) where they had been committed to the grace of God(AG) for the work they had now completed.(AH) 27 On arriving there, they gathered the church together and reported all that God had done through them(AI) and how he had opened a door(AJ) of faith to the Gentiles. 28 And they stayed there a long time with the disciples.(AK)

Psalm 140

Psalm 140[a]

For the director of music. A psalm of David.

Rescue me,(A) Lord, from evildoers;
protect me from the violent,(B)
who devise evil plans(C) in their hearts
and stir up war(D) every day.
They make their tongues as sharp as(E) a serpent’s;
the poison of vipers(F) is on their lips.[b]

Keep me safe,(G) Lord, from the hands of the wicked;(H)
protect me from the violent,
who devise ways to trip my feet.
The arrogant have hidden a snare(I) for me;
they have spread out the cords of their net(J)
and have set traps(K) for me along my path.

I say to the Lord, “You are my God.”(L)
Hear, Lord, my cry for mercy.(M)
Sovereign Lord,(N) my strong deliverer,
you shield my head in the day of battle.
Do not grant the wicked(O) their desires, Lord;
do not let their plans succeed.

Those who surround me proudly rear their heads;
may the mischief of their lips engulf them.(P)
10 May burning coals fall on them;
may they be thrown into the fire,(Q)
into miry pits, never to rise.
11 May slanderers not be established in the land;

2 Kings 1:1-2:25, Acts 13:42-14:7, Psalms 139:1-24, Proverbs 17:19-21

Today is the 21st day of June welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I’m Brian it is awesome to be here with you today as we gather around the Global Campfire together, take the next step forward together. That next step actually leads us into a brand-new book. We concluded the book of first Kings yesterday with the story of Ahab and Jehoshaphat and Micaiah the prophet and 400 other prophets who are hearing different things and a battle that took Ahab’s life. Now we begin second Kings, and there’s not a whole lot for us to discuss. Like these books - first Samuel, second Samuel, first Kings, second Kings - like these were all one text at one point. So, we’re moving into second Kings, but its delineation was made at a much later date. One thing that we will do is continue through the kings of Judah and the kings of Israel, but we will also get a good…we’ll get to know prophet Elisha, who will succeed Elijah who was sort of the profit that we dealt with in first Kings. But as we move into second Kings, we are essentially picking up right where we left off. And, so, let’s do that. We’re reading from the New International Version this week. Second Kings, chapters 1 and 2.

Commentary:

Okay. So, as we begin the book of second Kings, we were able to witness the departure of Elijah and sort of the transmission of his authority, his prophetic authority upon Elisha. And Elijah went up in a whirlwind, chariots of fire. And Elisha saw that and Elijah’s cloak foul from the chariot as he’s departing. And, so, Elisha has the cloak of Elijah. He goes back to the Jordan River, hits the water and it splits so that he’s able to walk over. Other prophets see this. And, so, Elisha has taken on the role of Elijah. And we will see Elisha often as we continue to move through second Kings.

In the book of Acts, we are journeying with the apostle Paul on his very first missionary journey. And, so, he is going to places where the gospel of Jesus has never been fully taught if it has ever even been heard of. And what we see is that the gospel of Jesus draws people to it. They want to hear about this, but not everybody is accepting of it, which is exactly how it was when Jesus Himself was walking the earth and conducting His ministry. And yet many do believe. But if we notice now that the gospel is spreading forth from Jerusalem throughout the Roman Empire and now Paul is traveling…like a traveling missionary throughout the Roman Empire things were not easy. In fact, it’s easy enough to say that what Paul is experiencing on his missionary journey is what he had intended to perpetrate upon people who believed in Jesus. He was on his way to Damascus to do the same kinds of things that are happening to him when he saw the bright light and met Jesus. Now he’s on the receiving end of this persecution and once again we see that persecution, pressure, stress on the situation is actually what was a catalyst to spread it out throughout the world. They didn’t have it easy. They walked a difficult road. If they hadn’t, we wouldn’t be here. And, so, when we consider the times of the early church or the times of the book of Acts let’s remember that. We often look through rose colored glasses like it was a utopian kind of time. But as we actually read the accounts of the time in the Bible, we see that God’s grace was sufficient and his Holy Spirit was indeed leading them, but it was not easy.

And then finally we read from Psalm 139 today which is…which is one of my favorite Psalms personally, find tremendous, tremendous comfort in it. And, so, let’s go back to some of the stanzas in that Psalm and absorb them very, very…let’s focus our attention for a second. “Where can I go from Your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens you’re there. If I make my bed in the depths, you are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me. Your right hand will hold me fast.” I love that passage, I love it so much because it in effect says, there is nowhere that I can go to be outside of your presence. Wherever I go, even if it’s in the depths, even if it’s on the other side of the world, wherever I go I cannot escape your presence. I find a tremendous amount of comfort in that. It helps me know that the feelings of God’s presence aren’t something that have to be conjured up. We don’t have to like whip ourselves into it so that we can become aware of it. It’s never taken from us. We are in God’s presence now, right now, and we will remain in his presence all day. Where can we go that He is not? What if we were aware of it all the time? What if we were perpetually aware that we are in God’s presence, and there is nowhere that we can go that He is not? What a comfort. What a relief. We spend so much of our lives trying to figure out where He is and what He is doing when we are in His presence if we would become aware of it.

Prayer:

Holy Spirit, come. Open our eyes. Give us eyes to see, give us ears to hear. Make us aware that You are everywhere. We are in Your presence and our request that You lead us deeper, deeper into Jesus, deeper so that we become more and more aware. Make us rooted in this. Make this a nonnegotiable in our lives and in our hearts and in our minds. You are here. You do not abandon us. We are in Your presence. Lead us we pray. In the mighty name of Jesus, we ask. Amen.

Announcements:

Okay. So, well normally I would say dailyaudiobible.com and…and all of that but there is an important thing to announce and make us aware of. dailyaudiobible.com is the website by the way, and the app is available in the app store.

But we are at the time just preceding our own little Global Campfire Daily Audio Bible holiday that takes place every year on the seventh day of July. And I think this will be the 14th seventh day of July that we’ve observed this. And those of you who have been around for more than here already know it’s the Daily Audio Bible Long Walk.

And, so, let me tell just an abbreviated story. Daily Audio Bible began on the first day of January 2006. And, so, every day, seven days a week since then this is where we’ve been, around the Global Campfire moving through the Bible together each year. It was the seventh day of July 2007, so like a year and a half after the Daily Audio Bible began that there was a big prayer gathering here in Nashville in the rolling hills of Tennessee at our football stadium. And proceeding that there was like a walk through the Nashville area. Tens of thousands of people, like the streets are closed down. And people are walking through. Not randomly like it was chaos. It was planned. But tens of thousands of people kinda walking through the streets and it was silent because that was the point was to kinda silently prayer…pray and walk into the stadium. So, there’s tens of thousands of people walking through the streets of Nashville in silence before the Lord, interceding, and praying on the way to going into the stadium. And Jill and I, our family, we participated in that. And if we remember, like if we go back to that point in time all of these little things that we do right in the palm of our hand like broadcasting live from wherever we are to Facebook or to YouTube or to Instagram or anything, this stuff hasn’t been fully invented yet. It is definitely not available in the palm of our hands. But this day of prayer that happened in Nashville was televised in certain areas. And, so, it was one of these times where we’re physically in this location and praying but other listeners to the Daily Audio Bible are throughout the earth being able to watch and participate. And, so, we’re able to kinda like create posts. And not in real time, interact in any sort of way that we could today. But at the time it felt like, wow, we’re really doing this and we’re really doing this together. And, so, the next year which would’ve been 2008 we just commemorated that beginning moment of really feeling connected in real time, and again not like what we can do today but at the time this was really really cool, and we began the Daily Audio Bible long walk. And it’s really simple. We have reached the halfway point through our year, the seventh day of July is close to the middle of the year. It’s like here we are halfway through our journey through a year, halfway through our journey through the Scriptures and the halfway point is a really good time to take a moment to reflect, to look back at the first half of the year and to look forward to the second half of the year. And what better way to do that than to take one day out of the year and give it to God. And that’s not to say that we’re not giving ourselves to God in every moment of every day. But to take a day and go for a long walk with the Lover of our souls, our Creator, the One who knows every hair on our head, the One who has hopes and dreams for us, the one who is Fathering us, our Lord. We certainly talk to God every day. But to take a day to go out into the beauty of creation to find somewhere beautiful whether it’s right down the street from us set up park or whether it’s several hours away, a meaningful place to us that we find beautiful, we take this day and we go there and we take a long walk because it’s so rare to have unhurried time with anybody but we so rarely have unhurried time with God. We always may be worshiping or asking for help, but it’s always on the go it feels like. We never have a day where we can just go and enjoy everything that the Lord has made and enjoy just being together with God, enjoying His creation and actually having the time to say whatever we need to say and actually having the time in silence to listen and hear God’s response to us. We just so rarely if ever have that opportunity. And it’s not because we can’t have the opportunity it’s because we don’t take the opportunity, we don’t prepare for the opportunity. And, so, the seventh day of July has been that for us all of these years, a special little Global Campfire holiday where we give ourselves permission to take a day. And the seventh day of July is two weeks from this Thursday. And, so, we take this day and do just that, have the time, a day away with God, a long walk, an unhurried walk. I’ve often over the years invited us just to kinda look back to the time where maybe we fell in love and how time wasn’t really a thing in that zone. When you fall in love it doesn’t matter you do the craziest things, like go for walks in the rain and find it to be romantic. Like later on you’re like, I’m not going out in the rain, I don’t wanna get wet. But when we fall in love it just doesn’t matter what we’re doing. Just us being together, our souls being knit together, it just…time stands still as it were. July 7th is about remembering falling in love with the Lord, remembering what that’s like, rekindling that, our first love to go and enjoy what God has made, enjoy the day and just be able to verbalize everything that’s going on, not just a quick immediate spur of the moment anxiety inducing kinds of things that we need God to do for us, but just to let time stand still and enjoy fellowship with God. And it’s remarkable when we go out into beauty how restorative nature can be. Like, a long walk in a park in silence is really remarkable, at least it has been for me. Like just how much life is happening that I’m not aware of and that I’m not paying any attention to. A long silent walk and the little critters of the earth and birds and the wind in the trees and the swaying of the flowers, it’s all happening. We’re just so busy we rarely take the time to notice, but on the 7th of July we take the time to notice and not only say everything that we need to say and hear everything that we need to hear but also re-group reset and launch into the second half of the year feeling like we’ve found right side up again, like we’re not just swirling around trying to figure it out. Like our feet are on the ground again, we are rooted again. And it’s a beautiful thing. We as a community moving through the Scriptures together, we are all over the world in every time zone on every continent. And, so, it’s not like we can all gather together and take this gigantic, tens of thousands of people walk. But we still can. It’s an individual, thing. It’s a time that we spend with God. But it’s also a time that where aware that our brothers and sisters all over the world are doing the same thing. And then we do a post on Facebook on the Daily Audio Bible Facebook page and invite everybody to post their pictures from their long walk into that post. And, so, over the course of a couple of days they all…all come in as they’re happenings. And we’re all over the world so it’s happening in different time zones. It is like little windows are opening up into each other’s lives and we get to look through those windows and kinda see what it looks like where you are, what it looks like where I am. Maybe some of the things that you were impressed by or that the Lord revealed to you or showed you during your long walk had become such an encouraging kind of reset and restart as we move through the second half of the year that we’ve just always continued to do it. And, so, that is coming up on the seventh day of July. And, so, make preparations for that. Give yourself permission maybe to take a day off. Give yourself permission to go on a long walk with God. And, so, we’ll continue to talk about that as we get nearer and nearer and then the day will arrive. It’s one of my favorite Daily Audio Bible days. I love watching pictures come in from all over the world, some remarkable…I mean…the beauty of God’s creation is staggering. And to be able to get glimpses into places we may never be able to visit or go. Just know we have brothers and sisters everywhere, and just to see the beauty of God’s creation all over the earth on a single day is awesome. So, plan for that. The seventh day of July, the Daily Audio Bible Long Walk. It’s our own little holiday here. And we’ll continue to talk about that as we continue day by day toward that day. So, make some plans for that.

If you want to partner with the Daily Audio Bible, if the mission here to bring the spoken word of God to whoever might be able to listen wherever they may be on this planet no matter what time of day or night that it is and to build community around the rhythm of showing up around the Global Campfire every day, if that is meaningful and life-giving then thank you for your partnership. Community Prayer and Praise:

Good morning DAB family this is steadfast Stacy in Arizona. First a quiet thank you too Blind Tony for his faithful poetry ministry and to the Hardin’s for their faithful work with DAB. Such a blessing to me and my family. This prayer is for K J in Southeast Asia. Thank you for calling again and helping us know about your prayer needs for Mackenzie and her nut allergy. Thank you for the miracle of being able to connect with us. We were missionaries in that part of the world and understand the darkness and I’m just honored to pray for you. Father in heaven please take care of Mackenzie and her team and K J and help with that situation Lord to Your glory to make that team healthy and cohesive and deal with their physical spiritual and medical needs. Lord, give them unity with each other and clear direction as a team as they minister to the local church and try to be Your hands and feet in a dark place. Thank You that Your light shines so bright in dark places. And thank You for the opportunity to pray for them in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Hi Daily Audio Bible family my name is Christina I’m a first-time caller I’ve been listening since the 1st of January, and it’s been such a moving journey from me. I was listening to today’s Bible reading and I heard a gentleman caller who needed prayer because he is having a hard time in the last few years and he’s listening to a lot of fellow believers around him telling him certain things about salvation that I’m feeling is really just affecting him. And Lord I just pray for this gentleman. I just ask that You give him the words that he needs to hear. And a lot of people around us, a lot of other humans will say things and they have a lot of things to say sometimes but is that really what You have to say Lord? And I ask that You heal his heart and give him the support that he needs during this time Lord and that he knows it’s what You say that really matters. Doesn’t matter what other people say. He needs to listen to Your word and listen to what his word says to You. Lord, I’m just new myself to this community. I’m a recent Christian about a year ago and I was just asked to serve as a worship leader and begin training on that and I’m just so excited. I’ve been singing my whole life and I feel that the Lord has set me up for this moment and I just ask for prayer during this time that I am a good steward of…of this position. And I’m just so thankful for Brian and his whole family and for this whole community. God bless you all.

Hello DAB family today is Wednesday June 15th my name is Tiffany and I’m from South Central Ohio. This is my first-time calling in. And while listening to the prayers and the requests after today’s reading I heard the heart cry of a young man who did not give his name and the Lord really touched my heart for him. Whoever you are Sir I want you to know that I’m praying for you and to remind you that you are so precious to our Lord. There’s not one thing about who you are or what you’re going through that he is not intimately aware of. And it is by his love and grace that he will keep you and continue to work deeply in your heart and life. He’s not a God who abandons his beloved. So, stay the course young man and know that you are not alone in your journey. You are in good company and our loved dearly by your fellow brothers and sisters in the Lord. And I pray that the Lord encourages your heart and gives you the strength to continue after Him. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Hi DAB family this is Tammy from the Adirondacks. I just got done listening to the June 15th podcast and there was a young man who called in. You…you were saying that the past couple of years have just nearly killed you and people are telling you that you have to be strong. And I don’t know…I…what I do know is…I am…I’m a new Christian, saved myself. And what I do know is what I have read in what the word has told us is when we are weak, He is strong. You asked the Lord into your heart, you asked for forgiveness, you repented for your sins. And you're…if you’re living a life that is pleasing doing the best that you can, you’re going to mess up, you’re going to make mistakes. But the Lord knows that. He knows that. You’re…He’s not expecting perfection. He’s just expecting you to come to Him. He is expecting you to come to Him when you’re weak. He’s expecting you to come to Him when you’re having a hard time. He’s expecting you to come to Him when you’re lost or broken. That’s what He wants to do is help you. He will restore your heart and your mind and your soul. That is what He wants. He wants the broken ones. So, don’t get discouraged brother. Don’t get discouraged. It took me…it’s taken…and I’m still figuring out…but don’t get discouraged. You are on the right walk. You are walking with the Lord and that’s all He, that He asks of us. Love you. Be blessed.

Greetings from Springfield MO from the Midwest Soul Sister. I am praying this morning for the gentleman, the godly man calling up for prayer for his family and his marriage in Dubai. God I just pray that You would come alongside this gentleman God and remind him that You see him, that he is on Your radar, God that You would come and minister to him. God, I pray unity over his family. I command in the name of Jesus that order would be brought out of this chaos God, that You will help him Lord and lift his eyes towards You. God that he would be brave and courageous and remind him that Your favor rest on him. So, God I just pray that he would turn his eyes to You, and he would find refuge in Your promises in the name of Jesus.

Hello this is Jennifer calling from the Seattle area and I’m calling in regards to a per request sent out by Patrick, a retired police officer in the Seattle area. He said he has retired and is now going to work helping with wellness for police officers. And I’m so happy to hear that. My ex-husband is a police officer and has struggled so much with PTSD and trauma from the things that he’s witnessed on the Police Department over the years. So, I would just love to sing a prayer right now for Patrick and for all law enforcement servants. So, heavenly Father I pray for Patrick. Thank You for giving him this opportunity to work with police officers. He’s been in the trenches. He knows what it’s like and he’s a believer. So not only can he offer them ways to cope but perhaps Lord he can offer them the hope of Jesus. And, so, Lord may Your light shine brightly through him as he has this opportunity. May Your Holy Spirit work through him. I thank You that he’s excited to get started and pray for every officer that he’s going to touch, that they would be blessed and that You would give them hope. And Lord I just pray for all law enforcement around our country and even around the world. It is a hard job, and it hardens hearts. Oh God I pray that You would work in the hearts of the police officers, that You would protect their lives, that You would keep them safe, that You would bless their families, that You would protect their families, and Lord that You would point them to You. I pray for even a revival in the police offices around the country Lord, that strong Christians would stand up for what they believe in and be willing to share You with others. So, we pray this all name Jesus. Amen.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Tuesday June 21, 2022 (NIV)

2 Kings 1-2

The Lord’s Judgment on Ahaziah

After Ahab’s death, Moab(A) rebelled against Israel. Now Ahaziah had fallen through the lattice of his upper room in Samaria and injured himself. So he sent messengers,(B) saying to them, “Go and consult Baal-Zebub,(C) the god of Ekron,(D) to see if I will recover(E) from this injury.”

But the angel(F) of the Lord said to Elijah(G) the Tishbite, “Go up and meet the messengers of the king of Samaria and ask them, ‘Is it because there is no God in Israel(H) that you are going off to consult Baal-Zebub, the god of Ekron?’ Therefore this is what the Lord says: ‘You will not leave(I) the bed you are lying on. You will certainly die!’” So Elijah went.

When the messengers returned to the king, he asked them, “Why have you come back?”

“A man came to meet us,” they replied. “And he said to us, ‘Go back to the king who sent you and tell him, “This is what the Lord says: Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are sending messengers to consult Baal-Zebub, the god of Ekron? Therefore you will not leave(J) the bed you are lying on. You will certainly die!”’”

The king asked them, “What kind of man was it who came to meet you and told you this?”

They replied, “He had a garment of hair[a](K) and had a leather belt around his waist.”

The king said, “That was Elijah the Tishbite.”

Then he sent(L) to Elijah a captain(M) with his company of fifty men. The captain went up to Elijah, who was sitting on the top of a hill, and said to him, “Man of God, the king says, ‘Come down!’”

10 Elijah answered the captain, “If I am a man of God, may fire come down from heaven and consume you and your fifty men!” Then fire(N) fell from heaven and consumed the captain and his men.

11 At this the king sent to Elijah another captain with his fifty men. The captain said to him, “Man of God, this is what the king says, ‘Come down at once!’”

12 “If I am a man of God,” Elijah replied, “may fire come down from heaven and consume you and your fifty men!” Then the fire of God fell from heaven and consumed him and his fifty men.

13 So the king sent a third captain with his fifty men. This third captain went up and fell on his knees before Elijah. “Man of God,” he begged, “please have respect for my life(O) and the lives of these fifty men, your servants! 14 See, fire has fallen from heaven and consumed the first two captains and all their men. But now have respect for my life!”

15 The angel(P) of the Lord said to Elijah, “Go down with him; do not be afraid(Q) of him.” So Elijah got up and went down with him to the king.

16 He told the king, “This is what the Lord says: Is it because there is no God in Israel for you to consult that you have sent messengers(R) to consult Baal-Zebub, the god of Ekron? Because you have done this, you will never leave(S) the bed you are lying on. You will certainly die!” 17 So he died,(T) according to the word of the Lord that Elijah had spoken.

Because Ahaziah had no son, Joram[b](U) succeeded him as king in the second year of Jehoram son of Jehoshaphat king of Judah. 18 As for all the other events of Ahaziah’s reign, and what he did, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Israel?

Elijah Taken Up to Heaven

When the Lord was about to take(V) Elijah up to heaven in a whirlwind,(W) Elijah and Elisha(X) were on their way from Gilgal.(Y) Elijah said to Elisha, “Stay here;(Z) the Lord has sent me to Bethel.”

But Elisha said, “As surely as the Lord lives and as you live, I will not leave you.”(AA) So they went down to Bethel.

The company(AB) of the prophets at Bethel came out to Elisha and asked, “Do you know that the Lord is going to take your master from you today?”

“Yes, I know,” Elisha replied, “so be quiet.”

Then Elijah said to him, “Stay here, Elisha; the Lord has sent me to Jericho.(AC)

And he replied, “As surely as the Lord lives and as you live, I will not leave you.” So they went to Jericho.

The company(AD) of the prophets at Jericho went up to Elisha and asked him, “Do you know that the Lord is going to take your master from you today?”

“Yes, I know,” he replied, “so be quiet.”

Then Elijah said to him, “Stay here;(AE) the Lord has sent me to the Jordan.”(AF)

And he replied, “As surely as the Lord lives and as you live, I will not leave you.”(AG) So the two of them walked on.

Fifty men from the company of the prophets went and stood at a distance, facing the place where Elijah and Elisha had stopped at the Jordan. Elijah took his cloak,(AH) rolled it up and struck(AI) the water with it. The water divided(AJ) to the right and to the left, and the two of them crossed over on dry(AK) ground.

When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, “Tell me, what can I do for you before I am taken from you?”

“Let me inherit a double(AL) portion of your spirit,”(AM) Elisha replied.

10 “You have asked a difficult thing,” Elijah said, “yet if you see me when I am taken from you, it will be yours—otherwise, it will not.”

11 As they were walking along and talking together, suddenly a chariot of fire(AN) and horses of fire appeared and separated the two of them, and Elijah went up to heaven(AO) in a whirlwind.(AP) 12 Elisha saw this and cried out, “My father! My father! The chariots(AQ) and horsemen of Israel!” And Elisha saw him no more. Then he took hold of his garment and tore(AR) it in two.

13 Elisha then picked up Elijah’s cloak that had fallen from him and went back and stood on the bank of the Jordan. 14 He took the cloak(AS) that had fallen from Elijah and struck(AT) the water with it. “Where now is the Lord, the God of Elijah?” he asked. When he struck the water, it divided to the right and to the left, and he crossed over.

15 The company(AU) of the prophets from Jericho, who were watching, said, “The spirit(AV) of Elijah is resting on Elisha.” And they went to meet him and bowed to the ground before him. 16 “Look,” they said, “we your servants have fifty able men. Let them go and look for your master. Perhaps the Spirit(AW) of the Lord has picked him up(AX) and set him down on some mountain or in some valley.”

“No,” Elisha replied, “do not send them.”

17 But they persisted until he was too embarrassed(AY) to refuse. So he said, “Send them.” And they sent fifty men, who searched for three days but did not find him. 18 When they returned to Elisha, who was staying in Jericho, he said to them, “Didn’t I tell you not to go?”

Healing of the Water

19 The people of the city said to Elisha, “Look, our lord, this town is well situated, as you can see, but the water is bad and the land is unproductive.”

20 “Bring me a new bowl,” he said, “and put salt in it.” So they brought it to him.

21 Then he went out to the spring and threw(AZ) the salt into it, saying, “This is what the Lord says: ‘I have healed this water. Never again will it cause death or make the land unproductive.’” 22 And the water has remained pure(BA) to this day, according to the word Elisha had spoken.

Elisha Is Jeered

23 From there Elisha went up to Bethel. As he was walking along the road, some boys came out of the town and jeered(BB) at him. “Get out of here, baldy!” they said. “Get out of here, baldy!” 24 He turned around, looked at them and called down a curse(BC) on them in the name(BD) of the Lord. Then two bears came out of the woods and mauled forty-two of the boys. 25 And he went on to Mount Carmel(BE) and from there returned to Samaria.

Acts 13:42-14:7

42 As Paul and Barnabas were leaving the synagogue,(A) the people invited them to speak further about these things on the next Sabbath. 43 When the congregation was dismissed, many of the Jews and devout converts to Judaism followed Paul and Barnabas, who talked with them and urged them to continue in the grace of God.(B)

44 On the next Sabbath almost the whole city gathered to hear the word of the Lord. 45 When the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy. They began to contradict what Paul was saying(C) and heaped abuse(D) on him.

46 Then Paul and Barnabas answered them boldly: “We had to speak the word of God to you first.(E) Since you reject it and do not consider yourselves worthy of eternal life, we now turn to the Gentiles.(F) 47 For this is what the Lord has commanded us:

“‘I have made you[a] a light for the Gentiles,(G)
that you[b] may bring salvation to the ends of the earth.’[c](H)

48 When the Gentiles heard this, they were glad and honored the word of the Lord;(I) and all who were appointed for eternal life believed.

49 The word of the Lord(J) spread through the whole region. 50 But the Jewish leaders incited the God-fearing women of high standing and the leading men of the city. They stirred up persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them from their region.(K) 51 So they shook the dust off their feet(L) as a warning to them and went to Iconium.(M) 52 And the disciples(N) were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.(O)

In Iconium

14 At Iconium(P) Paul and Barnabas went as usual into the Jewish synagogue.(Q) There they spoke so effectively that a great number(R) of Jews and Greeks believed. But the Jews who refused to believe stirred up the other Gentiles and poisoned their minds against the brothers.(S) So Paul and Barnabas spent considerable time there, speaking boldly(T) for the Lord, who confirmed the message of his grace by enabling them to perform signs and wonders.(U) The people of the city were divided; some sided with the Jews, others with the apostles.(V) There was a plot afoot among both Gentiles and Jews,(W) together with their leaders, to mistreat them and stone them.(X) But they found out about it and fled(Y) to the Lycaonian cities of Lystra and Derbe and to the surrounding country, where they continued to preach(Z) the gospel.(AA)

Psalm 139

Psalm 139

For the director of music. Of David. A psalm.

You have searched me,(A) Lord,
and you know(B) me.
You know when I sit and when I rise;(C)
you perceive my thoughts(D) from afar.
You discern my going out(E) and my lying down;
you are familiar with all my ways.(F)
Before a word is on my tongue
you, Lord, know it completely.(G)
You hem me in(H) behind and before,
and you lay your hand upon me.
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,(I)
too lofty(J) for me to attain.

Where can I go from your Spirit?
Where can I flee(K) from your presence?
If I go up to the heavens,(L) you are there;
if I make my bed(M) in the depths, you are there.
If I rise on the wings of the dawn,
if I settle on the far side of the sea,
10 even there your hand will guide me,(N)
your right hand(O) will hold me fast.
11 If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me
and the light become night around me,”
12 even the darkness will not be dark(P) to you;
the night will shine like the day,
for darkness is as light to you.

13 For you created my inmost being;(Q)
you knit me together(R) in my mother’s womb.(S)
14 I praise you(T) because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful,(U)
I know that full well.
15 My frame was not hidden from you
when I was made(V) in the secret place,
when I was woven together(W) in the depths of the earth.(X)
16 Your eyes saw my unformed body;
all the days ordained(Y) for me were written in your book
before one of them came to be.
17 How precious to me are your thoughts,[a](Z) God!(AA)
How vast is the sum of them!
18 Were I to count them,(AB)
they would outnumber the grains of sand(AC)
when I awake,(AD) I am still with you.

19 If only you, God, would slay the wicked!(AE)
Away from me,(AF) you who are bloodthirsty!(AG)
20 They speak of you with evil intent;
your adversaries(AH) misuse your name.(AI)
21 Do I not hate those(AJ) who hate you, Lord,
and abhor(AK) those who are in rebellion against you?
22 I have nothing but hatred for them;
I count them my enemies.(AL)
23 Search me,(AM) God, and know my heart;(AN)
test me and know my anxious thoughts.
24 See if there is any offensive way(AO) in me,
and lead me(AP) in the way everlasting.

Proverbs 17:19-21

19 Whoever loves a quarrel loves sin;
whoever builds a high gate invites destruction.

20 One whose heart is corrupt does not prosper;
one whose tongue is perverse falls into trouble.

there is no joy for the parent of a godless fool.(A)
