1 Samuel 12-13

Samuel’s Farewell Speech

12 Samuel said to all Israel, “I have listened(A) to everything you said to me and have set a king(B) over you. Now you have a king as your leader.(C) As for me, I am old and gray, and my sons(D) are here with you. I have been your leader from my youth until this day. Here I stand. Testify against me in the presence of the Lord and his anointed.(E) Whose ox have I taken? Whose donkey(F) have I taken? Whom have I cheated? Whom have I oppressed? From whose hand have I accepted a bribe(G) to make me shut my eyes? If I have done(H) any of these things, I will make it right.”(I)

“You have not cheated or oppressed us,” they replied. “You have not taken anything from anyone’s hand.”

Samuel said to them, “The Lord is witness(J) against you, and also his anointed is witness this day, that you have not found anything(K) in my hand.(L)

“He is witness,” they said.

Then Samuel said to the people, “It is the Lord who appointed Moses and Aaron and brought(M) your ancestors up out of Egypt. Now then, stand(N) here, because I am going to confront(O) you with evidence before the Lord as to all the righteous acts(P) performed by the Lord for you and your ancestors.

“After Jacob(Q) entered Egypt, they cried(R) to the Lord for help, and the Lord sent(S) Moses and Aaron, who brought your ancestors out of Egypt and settled them in this place.

“But they forgot(T) the Lord their God; so he sold them(U) into the hand of Sisera,(V) the commander of the army of Hazor,(W) and into the hands of the Philistines(X) and the king of Moab,(Y) who fought against them. 10 They cried(Z) out to the Lord and said, ‘We have sinned; we have forsaken(AA) the Lord and served the Baals and the Ashtoreths.(AB) But now deliver us from the hands of our enemies, and we will serve you.’ 11 Then the Lord sent Jerub-Baal,[a](AC) Barak,[b](AD) Jephthah(AE) and Samuel,[c](AF) and he delivered you from the hands of your enemies all around you, so that you lived in safety.

12 “But when you saw that Nahash(AG) king(AH) of the Ammonites was moving against you, you said to me, ‘No, we want a king to rule(AI) over us’—even though the Lord your God was your king. 13 Now here is the king(AJ) you have chosen, the one you asked(AK) for; see, the Lord has set a king over you. 14 If you fear(AL) the Lord and serve and obey him and do not rebel(AM) against his commands, and if both you and the king who reigns over you follow the Lord your God—good! 15 But if you do not obey the Lord, and if you rebel against(AN) his commands, his hand will be against you, as it was against your ancestors.

16 “Now then, stand still(AO) and see(AP) this great thing the Lord is about to do before your eyes! 17 Is it not wheat harvest(AQ) now? I will call(AR) on the Lord to send thunder(AS) and rain.(AT) And you will realize what an evil(AU) thing you did in the eyes of the Lord when you asked for a king.”

18 Then Samuel called on the Lord,(AV) and that same day the Lord sent thunder and rain. So all the people stood in awe(AW) of the Lord and of Samuel.

19 The people all said to Samuel, “Pray(AX) to the Lord your God for your servants so that we will not die,(AY) for we have added to all our other sins the evil of asking for a king.”

20 “Do not be afraid,” Samuel replied. “You have done all this evil;(AZ) yet do not turn away from the Lord, but serve the Lord with all your heart. 21 Do not turn away after useless(BA) idols.(BB) They can do you no good, nor can they rescue you, because they are useless. 22 For the sake(BC) of his great name(BD) the Lord will not reject(BE) his people, because the Lord was pleased to make(BF) you his own. 23 As for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the Lord by failing to pray(BG) for you. And I will teach(BH) you the way that is good and right. 24 But be sure to fear(BI) the Lord and serve him faithfully with all your heart;(BJ) consider(BK) what great(BL) things he has done for you. 25 Yet if you persist(BM) in doing evil, both you and your king(BN) will perish.”(BO)

Samuel Rebukes Saul

13 Saul was thirty[d] years old when he became king, and he reigned over Israel forty-[e] two years.

Saul chose three thousand men from Israel; two thousand(BP) were with him at Mikmash(BQ) and in the hill country of Bethel, and a thousand were with Jonathan at Gibeah(BR) in Benjamin. The rest of the men he sent back to their homes.

Jonathan attacked the Philistine outpost(BS) at Geba,(BT) and the Philistines heard about it. Then Saul had the trumpet(BU) blown throughout the land and said, “Let the Hebrews hear!” So all Israel heard the news: “Saul has attacked the Philistine outpost, and now Israel has become obnoxious(BV) to the Philistines.” And the people were summoned to join Saul at Gilgal.

The Philistines assembled(BW) to fight Israel, with three thousand[f] chariots, six thousand charioteers, and soldiers as numerous as the sand(BX) on the seashore. They went up and camped at Mikmash,(BY) east of Beth Aven.(BZ) When the Israelites saw that their situation was critical and that their army was hard pressed, they hid(CA) in caves and thickets, among the rocks, and in pits and cisterns.(CB) Some Hebrews even crossed the Jordan to the land of Gad(CC) and Gilead.

Saul remained at Gilgal, and all the troops with him were quaking(CD) with fear. He waited seven(CE) days, the time set by Samuel; but Samuel did not come to Gilgal, and Saul’s men began to scatter. So he said, “Bring me the burnt offering and the fellowship offerings.” And Saul offered(CF) up the burnt offering. 10 Just as he finished making the offering, Samuel(CG) arrived, and Saul went out to greet(CH) him.

11 “What have you done?” asked Samuel.

Saul replied, “When I saw that the men were scattering, and that you did not come at the set time, and that the Philistines were assembling at Mikmash,(CI) 12 I thought, ‘Now the Philistines will come down against me at Gilgal,(CJ) and I have not sought the Lord’s favor.(CK)’ So I felt compelled to offer the burnt offering.”

13 “You have done a foolish thing,(CL)” Samuel said. “You have not kept(CM) the command the Lord your God gave you; if you had, he would have established your kingdom over Israel for all time.(CN) 14 But now your kingdom(CO) will not endure; the Lord has sought out a man after his own heart(CP) and appointed(CQ) him ruler(CR) of his people, because you have not kept(CS) the Lord’s command.”

15 Then Samuel left Gilgal[g] and went up to Gibeah(CT) in Benjamin, and Saul counted the men who were with him. They numbered about six hundred.(CU)

Israel Without Weapons

16 Saul and his son Jonathan and the men with them were staying in Gibeah[h](CV) in Benjamin, while the Philistines camped at Mikmash. 17 Raiding(CW) parties went out from the Philistine camp in three detachments. One turned toward Ophrah(CX) in the vicinity of Shual, 18 another toward Beth Horon,(CY) and the third toward the borderland overlooking the Valley of Zeboyim(CZ) facing the wilderness.

19 Not a blacksmith(DA) could be found in the whole land of Israel, because the Philistines had said, “Otherwise the Hebrews will make swords or spears!(DB) 20 So all Israel went down to the Philistines to have their plow points, mattocks, axes and sickles[i] sharpened. 21 The price was two-thirds of a shekel[j] for sharpening plow points and mattocks, and a third of a shekel[k] for sharpening forks and axes and for repointing goads.

22 So on the day of the battle not a soldier with Saul and Jonathan(DC) had a sword or spear(DD) in his hand; only Saul and his son Jonathan had them.

Jonathan Attacks the Philistines

23 Now a detachment of Philistines had gone out to the pass(DE) at Mikmash.(DF)

John 7:1-30

Jesus Goes to the Festival of Tabernacles

After this, Jesus went around in Galilee. He did not want[a] to go about in Judea because the Jewish leaders(A) there were looking for a way to kill him.(B) But when the Jewish Festival of Tabernacles(C) was near, Jesus’ brothers(D) said to him, “Leave Galilee and go to Judea, so that your disciples there may see the works you do. No one who wants to become a public figure acts in secret. Since you are doing these things, show yourself to the world.” For even his own brothers did not believe in him.(E)

Therefore Jesus told them, “My time(F) is not yet here; for you any time will do. The world cannot hate you, but it hates me(G) because I testify that its works are evil.(H) You go to the festival. I am not[b] going up to this festival, because my time(I) has not yet fully come.” After he had said this, he stayed in Galilee.

10 However, after his brothers had left for the festival, he went also, not publicly, but in secret. 11 Now at the festival the Jewish leaders were watching for Jesus(J) and asking, “Where is he?”

12 Among the crowds there was widespread whispering about him. Some said, “He is a good man.”

Others replied, “No, he deceives the people.”(K) 13 But no one would say anything publicly about him for fear of the leaders.(L)

Jesus Teaches at the Festival

14 Not until halfway through the festival did Jesus go up to the temple courts and begin to teach.(M) 15 The Jews(N) there were amazed and asked, “How did this man get such learning(O) without having been taught?”(P)

16 Jesus answered, “My teaching is not my own. It comes from the one who sent me.(Q) 17 Anyone who chooses to do the will of God will find out(R) whether my teaching comes from God or whether I speak on my own. 18 Whoever speaks on their own does so to gain personal glory,(S) but he who seeks the glory of the one who sent him is a man of truth; there is nothing false about him. 19 Has not Moses given you the law?(T) Yet not one of you keeps the law. Why are you trying to kill me?”(U)

20 “You are demon-possessed,”(V) the crowd answered. “Who is trying to kill you?”

21 Jesus said to them, “I did one miracle,(W) and you are all amazed. 22 Yet, because Moses gave you circumcision(X) (though actually it did not come from Moses, but from the patriarchs),(Y) you circumcise a boy on the Sabbath. 23 Now if a boy can be circumcised on the Sabbath so that the law of Moses may not be broken, why are you angry with me for healing a man’s whole body on the Sabbath? 24 Stop judging by mere appearances, but instead judge correctly.”(Z)

Division Over Who Jesus Is

25 At that point some of the people of Jerusalem began to ask, “Isn’t this the man they are trying to kill?(AA) 26 Here he is, speaking publicly, and they are not saying a word to him. Have the authorities(AB) really concluded that he is the Messiah?(AC) 27 But we know where this man is from;(AD) when the Messiah comes, no one will know where he is from.”

28 Then Jesus, still teaching in the temple courts,(AE) cried out, “Yes, you know me, and you know where I am from.(AF) I am not here on my own authority, but he who sent me is true.(AG) You do not know him, 29 but I know him(AH) because I am from him and he sent me.”(AI)

30 At this they tried to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him,(AJ) because his hour had not yet come.(AK)

Psalm 108

Psalm 108[a](A)(B)

A song. A psalm of David.

My heart, O God, is steadfast;(C)
I will sing(D) and make music with all my soul.
Awake, harp and lyre!(E)
I will awaken the dawn.
I will praise you, Lord, among the nations;
I will sing of you among the peoples.
For great is your love,(F) higher than the heavens;
your faithfulness(G) reaches to the skies.(H)
Be exalted, O God, above the heavens;(I)
let your glory be over all the earth.(J)

Save us and help us with your right hand,(K)
that those you love may be delivered.
God has spoken(L) from his sanctuary:(M)
“In triumph I will parcel out Shechem(N)
and measure off the Valley of Sukkoth.(O)
Gilead is mine, Manasseh is mine;
Ephraim is my helmet,
Judah(P) is my scepter.
Moab(Q) is my washbasin,
on Edom(R) I toss my sandal;
over Philistia(S) I shout in triumph.”

10 Who will bring me to the fortified city?
Who will lead me to Edom?
11 Is it not you, God, you who have rejected us
and no longer go out with our armies?(T)
12 Give us aid against the enemy,
for human help is worthless.(U)
13 With God we will gain the victory,
and he will trample down(V) our enemies.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Friday May 11, 2018 (NIV)

1 Samuel 10-11

10 Then Samuel took a flask(A) of olive oil and poured it on Saul’s head and kissed him, saying, “Has not the Lord anointed(B) you ruler over his inheritance?[a](C) When you leave me today, you will meet two men near Rachel’s tomb,(D) at Zelzah on the border of Benjamin. They will say to you, ‘The donkeys(E) you set out to look for have been found. And now your father has stopped thinking about them and is worried(F) about you. He is asking, “What shall I do about my son?”’

“Then you will go on from there until you reach the great tree of Tabor. Three men going up to worship God at Bethel(G) will meet you there. One will be carrying three young goats, another three loaves of bread, and another a skin of wine. They will greet you and offer you two loaves of bread,(H) which you will accept from them.

“After that you will go to Gibeah(I) of God, where there is a Philistine outpost.(J) As you approach the town, you will meet a procession of prophets(K) coming down from the high place(L) with lyres, timbrels,(M) pipes(N) and harps(O) being played before them, and they will be prophesying.(P) The Spirit(Q) of the Lord will come powerfully upon you, and you will prophesy with them; and you will be changed(R) into a different person. Once these signs are fulfilled, do whatever(S) your hand(T) finds to do, for God is with(U) you.

“Go down ahead of me to Gilgal.(V) I will surely come down to you to sacrifice burnt offerings and fellowship offerings, but you must wait seven(W) days until I come to you and tell you what you are to do.”

As Saul turned to leave Samuel, God changed(X) Saul’s heart, and all these signs(Y) were fulfilled(Z) that day. 10 When he and his servant arrived at Gibeah, a procession of prophets met him; the Spirit(AA) of God came powerfully upon him, and he joined in their prophesying.(AB) 11 When all those who had formerly known him saw him prophesying with the prophets, they asked each other, “What is this(AC) that has happened to the son of Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets?”(AD)

12 A man who lived there answered, “And who is their father?” So it became a saying: “Is Saul also among the prophets?”(AE) 13 After Saul stopped prophesying,(AF) he went to the high place.

14 Now Saul’s uncle(AG) asked him and his servant, “Where have you been?”

“Looking for the donkeys,(AH)” he said. “But when we saw they were not to be found, we went to Samuel.”

15 Saul’s uncle said, “Tell me what Samuel said to you.”

16 Saul replied, “He assured us that the donkeys(AI) had been found.” But he did not tell his uncle what Samuel had said about the kingship.

17 Samuel summoned the people of Israel to the Lord at Mizpah(AJ) 18 and said to them, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘I brought Israel up out of Egypt, and I delivered you from the power of Egypt and all the kingdoms that oppressed(AK) you.’ 19 But you have now rejected(AL) your God, who saves(AM) you out of all your disasters and calamities. And you have said, ‘No, appoint a king(AN) over us.’(AO) So now present(AP) yourselves before the Lord by your tribes and clans.”

20 When Samuel had all Israel come forward by tribes, the tribe of Benjamin was taken by lot. 21 Then he brought forward the tribe of Benjamin, clan by clan, and Matri’s clan was taken.(AQ) Finally Saul son of Kish was taken. But when they looked for him, he was not to be found. 22 So they inquired(AR) further of the Lord, “Has the man come here yet?”

And the Lord said, “Yes, he has hidden himself among the supplies.”

23 They ran and brought him out, and as he stood among the people he was a head taller(AS) than any of the others. 24 Samuel said to all the people, “Do you see the man the Lord has chosen?(AT) There is no one like(AU) him among all the people.”

Then the people shouted, “Long live(AV) the king!”

25 Samuel explained(AW) to the people the rights and duties(AX) of kingship.(AY) He wrote them down on a scroll and deposited it before the Lord. Then Samuel dismissed the people to go to their own homes.

26 Saul also went to his home in Gibeah,(AZ) accompanied by valiant men(BA) whose hearts God had touched. 27 But some scoundrels(BB) said, “How can this fellow save us?” They despised him and brought him no gifts.(BC) But Saul kept silent.

Saul Rescues the City of Jabesh

11 Nahash[b](BD) the Ammonite went up and besieged Jabesh Gilead.(BE) And all the men of Jabesh said to him, “Make a treaty(BF) with us, and we will be subject to you.”

But Nahash the Ammonite replied, “I will make a treaty with you only on the condition(BG) that I gouge(BH) out the right eye of every one of you and so bring disgrace(BI) on all Israel.”

The elders(BJ) of Jabesh said to him, “Give us seven days so we can send messengers throughout Israel; if no one comes to rescue(BK) us, we will surrender(BL) to you.”

When the messengers came to Gibeah(BM) of Saul and reported these terms to the people, they all wept(BN) aloud. Just then Saul was returning from the fields, behind his oxen, and he asked, “What is wrong with everyone? Why are they weeping?” Then they repeated to him what the men of Jabesh had said.

When Saul heard their words, the Spirit(BO) of God came powerfully upon him, and he burned with anger. He took a pair of oxen,(BP) cut them into pieces, and sent the pieces by messengers throughout Israel,(BQ) proclaiming, “This is what will be done to the oxen of anyone(BR) who does not follow Saul and Samuel.” Then the terror of the Lord fell on the people, and they came out together as one.(BS) When Saul mustered(BT) them at Bezek,(BU) the men of Israel numbered three hundred thousand and those of Judah thirty thousand.

They told the messengers who had come, “Say to the men of Jabesh Gilead, ‘By the time the sun is hot tomorrow, you will be rescued.’” When the messengers went and reported this to the men of Jabesh, they were elated. 10 They said to the Ammonites, “Tomorrow we will surrender(BV) to you, and you can do to us whatever you like.”

11 The next day Saul separated his men into three divisions;(BW) during the last watch of the night they broke into the camp of the Ammonites(BX) and slaughtered them until the heat of the day. Those who survived were scattered, so that no two of them were left together.

Saul Confirmed as King

12 The people then said to Samuel, “Who(BY) was it that asked, ‘Shall Saul reign over us?’ Turn these men over to us so that we may put them to death.”

13 But Saul said, “No one will be put to death today,(BZ) for this day the Lord has rescued(CA) Israel.”

14 Then Samuel said to the people, “Come, let us go to Gilgal(CB) and there renew the kingship.(CC) 15 So all the people went to Gilgal(CD) and made Saul king(CE) in the presence of the Lord. There they sacrificed fellowship offerings before the Lord, and Saul and all the Israelites held a great celebration.

About a month later, Nahash

John 6:43-71

43 “Stop grumbling among yourselves,” Jesus answered. 44 “No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them,(A) and I will raise them up at the last day. 45 It is written in the Prophets: ‘They will all be taught by God.’[a](B) Everyone who has heard the Father and learned from him comes to me. 46 No one has seen the Father except the one who is from God;(C) only he has seen the Father. 47 Very truly I tell you, the one who believes has eternal life.(D) 48 I am the bread of life.(E) 49 Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, yet they died.(F) 50 But here is the bread that comes down from heaven,(G) which anyone may eat and not die. 51 I am the living bread(H) that came down from heaven.(I) Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.”(J)

52 Then the Jews(K) began to argue sharply among themselves,(L) “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?”

53 Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh(M) of the Son of Man(N) and drink his blood,(O) you have no life in you. 54 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.(P) 55 For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. 56 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them.(Q) 57 Just as the living Father sent me(R) and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me. 58 This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your ancestors ate manna and died, but whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.”(S) 59 He said this while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum.

Many Disciples Desert Jesus

60 On hearing it, many of his disciples(T) said, “This is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?”(U)

61 Aware that his disciples were grumbling about this, Jesus said to them, “Does this offend you?(V) 62 Then what if you see the Son of Man(W) ascend to where he was before!(X) 63 The Spirit gives life;(Y) the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you—they are full of the Spirit[b] and life. 64 Yet there are some of you who do not believe.” For Jesus had known(Z) from the beginning which of them did not believe and who would betray him.(AA) 65 He went on to say, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father has enabled them.”(AB)

66 From this time many of his disciples(AC) turned back and no longer followed him.

67 “You do not want to leave too, do you?” Jesus asked the Twelve.(AD)

68 Simon Peter answered him,(AE) “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.(AF) 69 We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God.”(AG)

70 Then Jesus replied, “Have I not chosen you,(AH) the Twelve? Yet one of you is a devil!”(AI) 71 (He meant Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot,(AJ) who, though one of the Twelve, was later to betray him.)(AK)

Psalm 107

BOOK V

Psalms 107–150

Psalm 107

Give thanks to the Lord,(A) for he is good;(B)
his love endures forever.

Let the redeemed(C) of the Lord tell their story—
those he redeemed from the hand of the foe,
those he gathered(D) from the lands,
from east and west, from north and south.[a]

Some wandered in desert(E) wastelands,
finding no way to a city(F) where they could settle.
They were hungry(G) and thirsty,(H)
and their lives ebbed away.
Then they cried out(I) to the Lord in their trouble,
and he delivered them from their distress.
He led them by a straight way(J)
to a city(K) where they could settle.
Let them give thanks(L) to the Lord for his unfailing love(M)
and his wonderful deeds(N) for mankind,
for he satisfies(O) the thirsty
and fills the hungry with good things.(P)

10 Some sat in darkness,(Q) in utter darkness,
prisoners suffering(R) in iron chains,(S)
11 because they rebelled(T) against God’s commands
and despised(U) the plans(V) of the Most High.
12 So he subjected them to bitter labor;
they stumbled, and there was no one to help.(W)
13 Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble,
and he saved them(X) from their distress.
14 He brought them out of darkness,(Y) the utter darkness,(Z)
and broke away their chains.(AA)
15 Let them give thanks(AB) to the Lord for his unfailing love(AC)
and his wonderful deeds(AD) for mankind,
16 for he breaks down gates of bronze
and cuts through bars of iron.

17 Some became fools(AE) through their rebellious ways(AF)
and suffered affliction(AG) because of their iniquities.
18 They loathed all food(AH)
and drew near the gates of death.(AI)
19 Then they cried(AJ) to the Lord in their trouble,
and he saved them(AK) from their distress.
20 He sent out his word(AL) and healed them;(AM)
he rescued(AN) them from the grave.(AO)
21 Let them give thanks(AP) to the Lord for his unfailing love(AQ)
and his wonderful deeds(AR) for mankind.
22 Let them sacrifice thank offerings(AS)
and tell of his works(AT) with songs of joy.(AU)

23 Some went out on the sea(AV) in ships;(AW)
they were merchants on the mighty waters.
24 They saw the works of the Lord,(AX)
his wonderful deeds in the deep.
25 For he spoke(AY) and stirred up a tempest(AZ)
that lifted high the waves.(BA)
26 They mounted up to the heavens and went down to the depths;
in their peril(BB) their courage melted(BC) away.
27 They reeled(BD) and staggered like drunkards;
they were at their wits’ end.
28 Then they cried(BE) out to the Lord in their trouble,
and he brought them out of their distress.(BF)
29 He stilled the storm(BG) to a whisper;
the waves(BH) of the sea[b] were hushed.(BI)
30 They were glad when it grew calm,
and he guided them(BJ) to their desired haven.
31 Let them give thanks(BK) to the Lord for his unfailing love(BL)
and his wonderful deeds(BM) for mankind.
32 Let them exalt(BN) him in the assembly(BO) of the people
and praise him in the council of the elders.

33 He turned rivers into a desert,(BP)
flowing springs(BQ) into thirsty ground,
34 and fruitful land into a salt waste,(BR)
because of the wickedness of those who lived there.
35 He turned the desert into pools of water(BS)
and the parched ground into flowing springs;(BT)
36 there he brought the hungry to live,
and they founded a city where they could settle.
37 They sowed fields and planted vineyards(BU)
that yielded a fruitful harvest;
38 he blessed them, and their numbers greatly increased,(BV)
and he did not let their herds diminish.(BW)

39 Then their numbers decreased,(BX) and they were humbled(BY)
by oppression, calamity and sorrow;
40 he who pours contempt on nobles(BZ)
made them wander in a trackless waste.(CA)
41 But he lifted the needy(CB) out of their affliction
and increased their families like flocks.(CC)
42 The upright see and rejoice,(CD)
but all the wicked shut their mouths.(CE)

43 Let the one who is wise(CF) heed these things
and ponder the loving deeds(CG) of the Lord.

1 Samuel 8:1-9:27, John 6:22-42, Psalms 106:32-48, Proverbs 14:34-35

Today is the 10t day of May, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian. It is a pleasure and an honor to be here with you today. I’ve just sitting here around the campfire throwing logs on and the fires always burning. And, so, whatever’s been going on, maybe it’s been a hectic week, maybe there’s just a lot of things swirling around. This is a chance, right now, to unplug from all that. It will be there if you want to pick it back up. This is chance unplug from all that and just exhale and inhale and calm ourselves and just kind of move away into this other place where the word of God can just be spoken over us and give us what we need. So, we’ve been reading from the book of first Samuel, which is the story of Samuel. And in yesterday’s reading, Samuel fully is in control. He’s the leader of the Israelites and has led the people back into covenant with God and God alone. So, we pick up the story. First Samuel chapters 8 and 8 today and we’re reading from the New International Version this week.

Commentary:

Okay. So, in the book of John, Jesus has some things to say that expose our motives and expose our fears as well. So, Jesus as miraculously fed a horde of people. And then the disciples sailed back to Capernaum, Jesus walks across the lake on the water to Capernaum. And the next day no one can find Jesus. And they find him in Capernaum and when they do they’re like, when did you get here, rabbi? And Jesus response is, very truly I tell you – so, like, what I’m saying is the truth – you’re looking for me, not because you saw the signs I performed but because you ate the loaves and add your fill. Then He kind of unpacks the motives underneath it all. Do not work for food that spoils but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. Work in this case means useful activity. So, to boil this down, Jesus is saying, you’ve been chasing trying to find where I went, not because of what God is doing, but because I fed you, not because of who I am, because your belly is full and you want more. Don’t chase me down so you can get another meal. Chase me down because you can have eternal life, which once again begs the question that we have asked several times as it’s been brought up in the Scriptures, why are we doing this? Are we trying to be in a relationship with Jesus because of what we think he’s going to do or provide or be for us? Or are we so in love that it will be eternal, that we’ll be in love forever and experience forever, eternally, eternal life? These are important questions because when we’re pursuing Jesus because of what we can get, right, that our bellies are full or that this obstacles removed from our path or this relational discord is broken apart or whatever, whatever why ever we would follow Jesus in terms of a benefit for ourselves, then that’s turning Jesus into Santa Claus. And we have to think of this in terms of all the relationships that we have or have had. When you’re in a relationship with somebody because of what you can get out of the deal, that’s not true love, that’s simply trying to acquire something. When we look around us and we see that taking place we would say that this person is using this other person to get something. That’s not true love. It may be true work. It may be a lot of work but it is for one goal, to obtain or achieve something through this other person. So, it doesn’t have anything to do with actual, authentic, deep, loving relationship. And Jesus is telling people that’s what you’re doing, doing all this work, chasing me down for what you think you might be able to get out of me. And the people respond. What is it that we need to do then in order to do the work God requires? Such a beautiful question because they’re essentially saying, okay, I’m hearing what you’re saying, what is it that I should be doing? And Jesus responded. The work of God is this – so, work again, means useful activity. So, what you need to do, Jesus is saying, this is going to be underwhelming because we keep thinking it’s in this big grandiose things, hoops and levers that we need to jump through and pull. Jesus said the work of God is this, to believe in the one He has sent. And that’s it. And the people are like, okay, great, give us a sign. And as an example, they said, you know, God gave our ancestors mana to eat in the wilderness. And Jesus just fed them. So, we see why the come up with this example. And Jesus is like, look, Moses isn’t the one that gave you the bread from heaven, the manna, it was God, it was my Father who gave the bread from heaven. And they’re like, okay, give us that bread then. Very similar to the woman at Jacob’s well when Jesus was talking about eternal water. And she’s like…I want…give me that…I want that. And Jesus response brings the whole thing back around, I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry. Whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. And what He’s saying here is this is bigger than physical water and physical food, right? This is bigger than your physical aspirations or objectives. Are you trying to get the things that you think that you need by chasing me? What I can give you is spiritual food and drink that can satisfy the unrest and deep, deep longing of your soul. And once you experience that then you are chasing after what you can get out of the deal. When you are content and centered in God all of these other things become so much less important because they are in their proper perspective. So, some things to think about again. Why are we doing this? Because if we haven’t fallen in love with God and understood our absolute desperate need for the Father’s presence in our life, sustaining our life, then we’re not going to be satisfied. We’re going to be moving from quick fix to quick fix. We’re going to be chasing after one meal to the next but we will still be hungry, we will still have the longing, we will still have the discontent, we will still have the anger, we will still have the anger turned inward that we would call depression, we’re still going to have the anxiety because we’re still going to believe that, if we can’t chase Him down and jump through the hoops and pull the levers then we’re not going to get fed and we’re not going to be full. And, so, we’re chasing quick fix after quick fix. And Jesus is saying there’s one fix that fixes it all, for always. Believe me. I first loved you. I loved you before you even knew who you were. I want to be in an intimate friendship with you. This is the only thing that’s going to satisfy that longing that never goes away. I am the bread of life, not I am the bread of stomach, right? I am the bread that fills your life from within. You never have to be hungry or thirsty. You can always be satisfied. Don’t chase me for what you think you need right now. Come to me to be full from within forever.

Prayer:

Jesus, we know this. We understand this, but we don’t always practice this. Usually, we are like these people. Usually we are pursuing and trusting and banging on the doors of heaven to get something moved or fulfilled or achieved or fixed. And there’s nothing wrong with that. You love for us to be in fellowship, in relationship. But you are essentially saying, running to me to get something fixed when we’re not really in a relationship with each other doesn’t make any sense. And, so, we come. We come to you humbly. We come to you hungry and thirsty for what You and only You can fulfill and fill within us, the longing of our souls to be reunited with You because that’s where all of this comes from, all of the discontent of our lives. We think that if we could just get that thing or achieve this goal then we’d be fulfilled and content but it won’t work. We’ll just continue to chase after the next thing. When You are saying, if we come to You and believe You, the longings of our souls can be filled. And, so, we come, Holy Spirit, and ask that you well up from within us and give us site to see and ears to hear. And we pray this in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hey, what’s up everybody? It’s Miguel from Santa Rosa and I’m calling in for prayer this morning as I am calling in feeling like a man down…if I can be quite honest. You guys already know about a prayer request I left last week for my mom, for my family who is feeling the effects of the absence of my mom. And there is some progress there. So, thank you for praying. She is looking at hopefully being back home by the end of this week before Mother’s Day. So, thank you, but please keep on praying that this would be so. You know, I’ve taken a lot of hits over the past week. And it’s been with that part of my family, it’s been financially, I took some huge hits. It just…it hurts…it hurts pretty bad. And my marriage has taken some huge hits to. And it’s just hit after hit after hit after hit and it’s hard, really hard, the moment right now. I know the victory is coming. I know that to be true, but just…in the moment it hurts. And so, please pray for me family. I just…I’m a man down right now. So, thank you all. I appreciate it. And we’ll talk again soon and give glory to God. All right. Bye-bye.

Hi everyone. This is GG from Gainesville. I haven’t called in a while because I’ve been doing really well. I still face some health challenges but I’m emotionally stronger because my relationship with God is growing and he is really my rock right now. I’m just really proud right now. But I’m calling to ask for prayer for my family. My dad is having a lot…a myriad of issues from liver cancer to anxieties to __. So, just a real miracle that his life would be restored to health and that we would have faith and trust in God and keep bringing all our fears to him. And that dad would be able to sleep at night because he keeps having this issue with vomiting. And I think the next thing I ask for prayer is my sister is taking NCLEX for nursing. She’s doing really well, but just so that she will have peace at the exam and also wisdom on what job she should take and when. And another sister has been trying to have a baby for many years now. She’s tried three times with her own eggs, in vitro, and it didn’t work out. And now she’s trying somebody else’s eggs. So, just that her, TB and Taylor, they’re married, and that they would have joy but also that their joy will be set in Jesus, no matter what happens that she would have a baby, that that would happen. And lastly, I just want to leave you with a verse from Psalm 55 verse 16. As for me, I will call upon God and the Lord should save me even if I…

Hey everybody. It’s Margo from Australia. I’ve just been listening to the podcast from May 7th and I just want to make a comment about Brian’s fantastic commentary at the end. But first of all, I just want to say, quickly say, thank you so much Sherry from British Columbia for just helping to clarify my recent call. I would hate to think anyone thought that I was suggesting a Christian should divorce a non-Christian. No, no, no, certainly not. My call was more of a, I guess, a warning, sort of get out will you can type thing to those who are yet married. So, thank you Sherry for clarifying. But, yeah, look May the 7th, I loved Brian’s comment about when Jesus said you want to be well and also about how we need to do our part. And it reminded me of a call, I called in a little while ago with some advice for those suffering depression and anxiety. And I thought, I just want to reiterate those three points I made because in 19 years, I am now doing so, so well. I am having very few low moods. And I really think, I finally learned that the keys for me, and hopefully for you, number one is pray. Prayer is extremely important but you must praise Jesus daily. It brings you closer to him, you feel His peace full. Number two is immerse yourself in the word and for me DAB has been a key factor in that. I’ll often listen to it twice or more in a day. The more I spend time in the word basically the happier I am. And number three is quoting Scripture out loud, spit it in the devil’s face like a statement. It’s spiritual warfare and I’m sure I’ve mentioned before the Scripture in 2 Timothy, God has not given me a Spirit of fear but of love, power, and a sound mind. And one key thing is you’ve got to do these things consistently, not just when you’re feeling down. Do them in the good times as well so that you build up a really good habit. Any…

Hey Guys. This is Melina and I’m calling from Kentucky. I’ve listened off and on for about two years and I just finished the May 8th audio podcast. I have so many things to say but all I can really say is my bones are rotting. Everything that Brian said, I haven’t listened for several weeks, and I turned it on today and he hit a homerun for me. I know that God wanted me to hear this today. And just from the depths of my soul, you all, I just need your prayers and I need God to just guide me through whatever it is that I’m searching for, I’m looking for. And I just need to come back to Him. I just need help. It just means the world to me to be able to turn this podcast on and hear exactly what I needed to hear at exactly the time that I needed to hear it. I love you guys __. I love how so many people in this world that are hurting and need help, so many people, and I almost feel selfish for asking for these prayers for me Lord, but I know that they’re needed. I thank everyone so much and God bless you. Bye.

1 Samuel 8-9

Israel Asks for a King

When Samuel grew old, he appointed(A) his sons as Israel’s leaders.[a] The name of his firstborn was Joel and the name of his second was Abijah,(B) and they served at Beersheba.(C) But his sons(D) did not follow his ways. They turned aside(E) after dishonest gain and accepted bribes(F) and perverted(G) justice.

So all the elders(H) of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah.(I) They said to him, “You are old, and your sons do not follow your ways; now appoint a king(J) to lead[b](K) us, such as all the other nations(L) have.”

But when they said, “Give us a king(M) to lead us,” this displeased(N) Samuel; so he prayed to the Lord. And the Lord told him: “Listen(O) to all that the people are saying to you; it is not you they have rejected,(P) but they have rejected me as their king.(Q) As they have done from the day I brought them up out of Egypt until this day, forsaking(R) me and serving other gods, so they are doing to you. Now listen to them; but warn them solemnly and let them know(S) what the king who will reign over them will claim as his rights.”

10 Samuel told(T) all the words of the Lord to the people who were asking him for a king. 11 He said, “This is what the king who will reign over you will claim as his rights: He will take(U) your sons and make them serve(V) with his chariots and horses, and they will run in front of his chariots.(W) 12 Some he will assign to be commanders(X) of thousands and commanders of fifties, and others to plow his ground and reap his harvest, and still others to make weapons of war and equipment for his chariots. 13 He will take your daughters to be perfumers and cooks and bakers. 14 He will take the best of your(Y) fields and vineyards(Z) and olive groves and give them to his attendants.(AA) 15 He will take a tenth(AB) of your grain and of your vintage and give it to his officials and attendants. 16 Your male and female servants and the best of your cattle[c] and donkeys he will take for his own use. 17 He will take a tenth of your flocks, and you yourselves will become his slaves. 18 When that day comes, you will cry out for relief from the king you have chosen, but the Lord will not answer(AC) you in that day.(AD)

19 But the people refused(AE) to listen to Samuel. “No!” they said. “We want(AF) a king(AG) over us. 20 Then we will be like all the other nations,(AH) with a king to lead us and to go out before us and fight our battles.”

21 When Samuel heard all that the people said, he repeated(AI) it before the Lord. 22 The Lord answered, “Listen(AJ) to them and give them a king.”

Then Samuel said to the Israelites, “Everyone go back to your own town.”

Samuel Anoints Saul

There was a Benjamite,(AK) a man of standing,(AL) whose name was Kish(AM) son of Abiel, the son of Zeror, the son of Bekorath, the son of Aphiah of Benjamin. Kish had a son named Saul, as handsome(AN) a young man as could be found(AO) anywhere in Israel, and he was a head taller(AP) than anyone else.

Now the donkeys(AQ) belonging to Saul’s father Kish were lost, and Kish said to his son Saul, “Take one of the servants with you and go and look for the donkeys.” So he passed through the hill(AR) country of Ephraim and through the area around Shalisha,(AS) but they did not find them. They went on into the district of Shaalim, but the donkeys(AT) were not there. Then he passed through the territory of Benjamin, but they did not find them.

When they reached the district of Zuph,(AU) Saul said to the servant who was with him, “Come, let’s go back, or my father will stop thinking about the donkeys and start worrying(AV) about us.”

But the servant replied, “Look, in this town there is a man of God;(AW) he is highly respected, and everything(AX) he says comes true. Let’s go there now. Perhaps he will tell us what way to take.”

Saul said to his servant, “If we go, what can we give the man? The food in our sacks is gone. We have no gift(AY) to take to the man of God. What do we have?”

The servant answered him again. “Look,” he said, “I have a quarter of a shekel[d] of silver. I will give it to the man of God so that he will tell us what way to take.” (Formerly in Israel, if someone went to inquire(AZ) of God, they would say, “Come, let us go to the seer,” because the prophet of today used to be called a seer.)(BA)

10 “Good,” Saul said to his servant. “Come, let’s go.” So they set out for the town where the man of God was.

11 As they were going up the hill to the town, they met some young women coming out to draw(BB) water, and they asked them, “Is the seer here?”

12 “He is,” they answered. “He’s ahead of you. Hurry now; he has just come to our town today, for the people have a sacrifice(BC) at the high place.(BD) 13 As soon as you enter the town, you will find him before he goes up to the high place to eat. The people will not begin eating until he comes, because he must bless(BE) the sacrifice; afterward, those who are invited will eat. Go up now; you should find him about this time.”

14 They went up to the town, and as they were entering it, there was Samuel, coming toward them on his way up to the high place.

15 Now the day before Saul came, the Lord had revealed this to Samuel: 16 “About this time tomorrow I will send you a man from the land of Benjamin. Anoint(BF) him ruler(BG) over my people Israel; he will deliver(BH) them from the hand of the Philistines.(BI) I have looked on my people, for their cry(BJ) has reached me.”

17 When Samuel caught sight of Saul, the Lord said to him, “This(BK) is the man I spoke to you about; he will govern my people.”

18 Saul approached Samuel in the gateway and asked, “Would you please tell me where the seer’s house is?”

19 “I am the seer,” Samuel replied. “Go up ahead of me to the high place, for today you are to eat with me, and in the morning I will send you on your way and will tell you all that is in your heart. 20 As for the donkeys(BL) you lost three days ago, do not worry about them; they have been found. And to whom is all the desire(BM) of Israel turned, if not to you and your whole family line?”

21 Saul answered, “But am I not a Benjamite, from the smallest tribe(BN) of Israel, and is not my clan the least(BO) of all the clans of the tribe of Benjamin?(BP) Why do you say such a thing to me?”

22 Then Samuel brought Saul and his servant into the hall and seated them at the head of those who were invited—about thirty in number. 23 Samuel said to the cook, “Bring the piece of meat I gave you, the one I told you to lay aside.”

24 So the cook took up the thigh(BQ) with what was on it and set it in front of Saul. Samuel said, “Here is what has been kept for you. Eat, because it was set aside for you for this occasion from the time I said, ‘I have invited guests.’” And Saul dined with Samuel that day.

25 After they came down from the high place to the town, Samuel talked with Saul on the roof(BR) of his house. 26 They rose about daybreak, and Samuel called to Saul on the roof, “Get ready, and I will send you on your way.” When Saul got ready, he and Samuel went outside together. 27 As they were going down to the edge of the town, Samuel said to Saul, “Tell the servant to go on ahead of us”—and the servant did so—“but you stay here for a while, so that I may give you a message from God.”

John 6:22-42

22 The next day the crowd that had stayed on the opposite shore of the lake(A) realized that only one boat had been there, and that Jesus had not entered it with his disciples, but that they had gone away alone.(B) 23 Then some boats from Tiberias(C) landed near the place where the people had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks.(D) 24 Once the crowd realized that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they got into the boats and went to Capernaum in search of Jesus.

Jesus the Bread of Life

25 When they found him on the other side of the lake, they asked him, “Rabbi,(E) when did you get here?”

26 Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, you are looking for me,(F) not because you saw the signs(G) I performed but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. 27 Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures(H) to eternal life,(I) which the Son of Man(J) will give you. For on him God the Father has placed his seal(K) of approval.”

28 Then they asked him, “What must we do to do the works God requires?”

29 Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe(L) in the one he has sent.”(M)

30 So they asked him, “What sign(N) then will you give that we may see it and believe you?(O) What will you do? 31 Our ancestors ate the manna(P) in the wilderness; as it is written: ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’[a](Q)

32 Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven(R) and gives life to the world.”

34 “Sir,” they said, “always give us this bread.”(S)

35 Then Jesus declared, “I am(T) the bread of life.(U) Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes(V) in me will never be thirsty.(W) 36 But as I told you, you have seen me and still you do not believe. 37 All those the Father gives me(X) will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away. 38 For I have come down from heaven(Y) not to do my will but to do the will(Z) of him who sent me.(AA) 39 And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all those he has given me,(AB) but raise them up at the last day.(AC) 40 For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son(AD) and believes in him shall have eternal life,(AE) and I will raise them up at the last day.”

41 At this the Jews there began to grumble about him because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.” 42 They said, “Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph,(AF) whose father and mother we know?(AG) How can he now say, ‘I came down from heaven’?”(AH)

Psalm 106:32-48

32 By the waters of Meribah(A) they angered the Lord,
and trouble came to Moses because of them;
33 for they rebelled(B) against the Spirit(C) of God,
and rash words came from Moses’ lips.[a](D)

34 They did not destroy(E) the peoples
as the Lord had commanded(F) them,
35 but they mingled(G) with the nations
and adopted their customs.
36 They worshiped their idols,(H)
which became a snare(I) to them.
37 They sacrificed their sons(J)
and their daughters to false gods.(K)
38 They shed innocent blood,
the blood of their sons(L) and daughters,
whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan,
and the land was desecrated by their blood.
39 They defiled themselves(M) by what they did;
by their deeds they prostituted(N) themselves.

40 Therefore the Lord was angry(O) with his people
and abhorred his inheritance.(P)
41 He gave them into the hands(Q) of the nations,
and their foes ruled over them.
42 Their enemies oppressed(R) them
and subjected them to their power.
43 Many times he delivered them,(S)
but they were bent on rebellion(T)
and they wasted away in their sin.
44 Yet he took note of their distress
when he heard their cry;(U)
45 for their sake he remembered his covenant(V)
and out of his great love(W) he relented.(X)
46 He caused all who held them captive
to show them mercy.(Y)

47 Save us,(Z) Lord our God,
and gather us(AA) from the nations,
that we may give thanks(AB) to your holy name(AC)
and glory in your praise.

48 Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel,
from everlasting to everlasting.

Let all the people say, “Amen!”(AD)

Praise the Lord.

1 Samuel 5:1-7:17, John 6:1-21, Psalms 106:13-31, Proverbs 14:32-33

Today is the 9th day of May. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian. And it’s, of course, great to be here with you today as we prepare our hearts and minds and spirits to take the next step forward through the Scriptures. And we find ourselves moving our way through the story of Samuel. We’ve been reading 1 Samuel for the last few days. We’ll continue forward with 1 Samuel chapter 5, 6 and 7 today. And we’re reading from the New International Version this week.

Commentary:

Alright. So, in 1 Samuel, we’re in the middle of this kind of twisty, windy story where the Ark of the Covenant was lost in battle and then it was taken into Philistine territory, right? And then they begin to move it around because plague breaks out in these territories. So, they first take the Ark of the Covenant to Ashdod to the temple of the god Dagon. And we know the whole story of Dagon falling over. Ashdod is a place that still exists. And once the Ashdodies had had enough of the Ark of the Covenant, they sent it to Gath. Gath also still exists and is an active archeological site. This is the home of Goliath the giant. And then they took it to Ekron. The ruins of Ekron still exists. Which only leaves two other major Philistine sites which would be Ashkelon, which also still exists and Gaza, which also still exists. And once the Philistines realized that perhaps the hand of God is upon them in a negative way and maybe they should give back what they took, they prepare some guilt offerings. Strange ones, right? Gold tumors and gold rats, but whatever. And they put it on the cart and they send the cart off with some cows. And the plan is just to watch where the cows go. Of course, the cows go back to Israel to Beth Shemesh, which also still exists. And of course, the Israelites are rejoicing. The Ark of the Covenant has returned home. But that whole story turns a little weird too. People try to look inside the Ark of the Covenant and they’re stuck down. So then the Ark moves to Kiriath Jearim. And so there’s just all this moving around and all this strange stuff that’s happening. And we could say, Well, this is kind of just a transitional story. But what happens because of this is that Samuel, this little kid who was promised to the Lord at Shiloh, whose story we’ve been following these last several days, he now comes into full leadership over the Jewish people. And the first thing that he does is challenge the people to serve God and God alone. And what that creates is the casting off of all these other idols that the people have been worshiping, all the other mixture. So once again we see the people return to God with their hearts. And also what we see is the Philistines kind of seeing all this going down and trying to move in and intimidate the people like they’d always done. It just doesn’t work this time. Samuel is now leading the people. And he leads the people to push the Philistines back. And their enemies are subdued. And, of course, we’ll continue the story forward tomorrow.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your Word, all of the nuances, all of the issues that it brings up, all the parallels, all of the guidance and direction, all of the truth. Thank You for all of the people that we encounter in the Scriptures because they Illuminate our own path. They’ve gone before us and we watch where they go and then we realize we get a choice about the road that we’re gonna walk on. So we invite Your Holy Spirit to come and lead us into all truth because the road that we want to walk on is the narrow path that leads to life. If You find it, and we won’t find it without Your Holy Spirit and the guidance of Your Word. So come Holy Spirit and lead us into all truth, we pray. In Jesus name. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hi. I’m Rachel. I’ve called a couple of times…long ago. I was just listening to the May 5th podcast and, she didn’t leave her name, but there was a girl who called in and was asking for prayer for deliverance from her lust issues. I just wanted to call and say thank you for calling. I’ve been going to therapists now for couple of months. __ another therapist __ stopped cause I moved. And my most recent therapist and I have kind of come to this conclusion that I am a sex addict. And it’s been really hard on me and feeling very alone. A lot of men go through…it’s just not the same for women. And, so, thank you for calling in and having that boldness. I would have not have called in otherwise. Anyway, I don’t have the timer. So I’m gonna get cut off. Yeah. That was it. Bye.

Hello DAB family. My name is Tammy. I’m calling, Sue’s the person I’m calling actually. I’ve been listening for almost 4 years and someone called in yesterday on the 4th, his name is Terry and he was struggling with addiction and his reassurance that he was still saved. And I just wanted to encourage him that God sees him, He knows your heart. When you reach out to Him He is faithful and gracious and merciful and we can count on God’s love and peace. And I just pray that you will come in contact with people that will show you the love of God, that you feel accepted, and know that you are loved and that God loves you. I thank you. I just lost my brother two weeks ago and he struggled with the same thing and I prayed with him a couple weeks ago and I know, I have peace in my heart and know that I will see my brother again. Thank you all very much. I love this. I love this program. I love everything that it’s shown me and walked me through. Bless you all. Bye-bye.

Hello DABers. I am a Burning Bush that would not be Devoured for the Glory of Our God and King. This is Walta calling from Charlotte. I wanted to say thanks to all those who prayed for my family. We lost our mother this past…a week ago. And I’m just thanking God for peace and people who are going…hope to be there with her. I’m also praying for…for just not only our nation but the nations out there today and for our faith continue the moment __ that she died, that that faith and is a beautiful. And a peace. And I pray that peace for all those around the world that, that God will allow a revival in the hearts of many and that we will remember who our Creator is and who He is to us and that everything that seems __ peace and heart will be demolished in Jesus name. I love you guys. Talk to you soon. Bye.

Hi this is Donna from California and I’m calling in response to the caller who called on May 5th who said she was battling lust. And I’ve gotta say my sister, that is so brave of you, just so brave. It’s really, really hard for women, and I count myself included here to admit this, we battle with that. There’s just so much shame about it, like, somehow, it’s okay for man to be battling it but not a woman. You really had a lot of courage to do that and that’s the first step, you know, to call asking for help. And God will release you from this snare. It is a snare. And like any other type of addiction or sin, it’s a snare that will continually, you know, trap, but God can and will release us from that. So, anyway, I am praying for you. I am sure that lots and lots of other people are to. And you are loved and I’m so glad they called. Thank you. Thank you for making it okay for others of us to call as well. Okay. God bless you.

1 Samuel 5-7

The Ark in Ashdod and Ekron

After the Philistines had captured the ark of God, they took it from Ebenezer(A) to Ashdod.(B) Then they carried the ark into Dagon’s temple and set it beside Dagon.(C) When the people of Ashdod rose early the next day, there was Dagon, fallen(D) on his face on the ground before the ark of the Lord! They took Dagon and put him back in his place. But the following morning when they rose, there was Dagon, fallen on his face on the ground before the ark of the Lord! His head and hands had been broken(E) off and were lying on the threshold; only his body remained. That is why to this day neither the priests of Dagon nor any others who enter Dagon’s temple at Ashdod step on the threshold.(F)

The Lord’s hand(G) was heavy on the people of Ashdod and its vicinity; he brought devastation(H) on them and afflicted them with tumors.[a](I) When the people of Ashdod saw what was happening, they said, “The ark of the god of Israel must not stay here with us, because his hand is heavy on us and on Dagon our god.” So they called together all the rulers(J) of the Philistines and asked them, “What shall we do with the ark of the god of Israel?”

They answered, “Have the ark of the god of Israel moved to Gath.(K)” So they moved the ark of the God of Israel.

But after they had moved it, the Lord’s hand was against that city, throwing it into a great panic.(L) He afflicted the people of the city, both young and old, with an outbreak of tumors.[b] 10 So they sent the ark of God to Ekron.(M)

As the ark of God was entering Ekron, the people of Ekron cried out, “They have brought the ark of the god of Israel around to us to kill us and our people.” 11 So they called together all the rulers(N) of the Philistines and said, “Send the ark of the god of Israel away; let it go back to its own place, or it[c] will kill us and our people.” For death had filled the city with panic; God’s hand was very heavy on it. 12 Those who did not die(O) were afflicted with tumors, and the outcry of the city went up to heaven.

The Ark Returned to Israel

When the ark of the Lord had been in Philistine territory seven months, the Philistines called for the priests and the diviners(P) and said, “What shall we do with the ark of the Lord? Tell us how we should send it back to its place.”

They answered, “If you return the ark of the god of Israel, do not send it back to him without a gift;(Q) by all means send a guilt offering(R) to him. Then you will be healed, and you will know why his hand(S) has not been lifted from you.”

The Philistines asked, “What guilt offering should we send to him?”

They replied, “Five gold tumors and five gold rats, according to the number(T) of the Philistine rulers, because the same plague(U) has struck both you and your rulers. Make models of the tumors(V) and of the rats that are destroying the country, and give glory(W) to Israel’s god. Perhaps he will lift his hand from you and your gods and your land. Why do you harden(X) your hearts as the Egyptians and Pharaoh did? When Israel’s god dealt harshly with them,(Y) did they(Z) not send the Israelites out so they could go on their way?

“Now then, get a new cart(AA) ready, with two cows that have calved and have never been yoked.(AB) Hitch the cows to the cart, but take their calves away and pen them up. Take the ark of the Lord and put it on the cart, and in a chest beside it put the gold objects you are sending back to him as a guilt offering. Send it on its way, but keep watching it. If it goes up to its own territory, toward Beth Shemesh,(AC) then the Lord has brought this great disaster on us. But if it does not, then we will know that it was not his hand that struck us but that it happened to us by chance.”

10 So they did this. They took two such cows and hitched them to the cart and penned up their calves. 11 They placed the ark of the Lord on the cart and along with it the chest containing the gold rats and the models of the tumors. 12 Then the cows went straight up toward Beth Shemesh, keeping on the road and lowing all the way; they did not turn to the right or to the left. The rulers of the Philistines followed them as far as the border of Beth Shemesh.

13 Now the people of Beth Shemesh were harvesting their wheat(AD) in the valley, and when they looked up and saw the ark, they rejoiced at the sight. 14 The cart came to the field of Joshua of Beth Shemesh, and there it stopped beside a large rock. The people chopped up the wood of the cart and sacrificed the cows as a burnt offering(AE) to the Lord. 15 The Levites(AF) took down the ark of the Lord, together with the chest containing the gold objects, and placed them on the large rock.(AG) On that day the people of Beth Shemesh(AH) offered burnt offerings and made sacrifices to the Lord. 16 The five rulers of the Philistines saw all this and then returned that same day to Ekron.

17 These are the gold tumors the Philistines sent as a guilt offering to the Lord—one each(AI) for Ashdod, Gaza, Ashkelon, Gath and Ekron. 18 And the number of the gold rats was according to the number of Philistine towns belonging to the five rulers—the fortified towns with their country villages. The large rock on which the Levites set the ark of the Lord is a witness to this day in the field of Joshua of Beth Shemesh.

19 But God struck down(AJ) some of the inhabitants of Beth Shemesh, putting seventy[d] of them to death because they looked(AK) into the ark of the Lord. The people mourned because of the heavy blow the Lord had dealt them. 20 And the people of Beth Shemesh asked, “Who can stand(AL) in the presence of the Lord, this holy(AM) God? To whom will the ark go up from here?”

21 Then they sent messengers to the people of Kiriath Jearim,(AN) saying, “The Philistines have returned the ark of the Lord. Come down and take it up to your town.” So the men of Kiriath Jearim came and took up the ark(AO) of the Lord. They brought it to Abinadab’s(AP) house on the hill and consecrated Eleazar his son to guard the ark of the Lord. The ark remained at Kiriath Jearim(AQ) a long time—twenty years in all.

Samuel Subdues the Philistines at Mizpah

Then all the people of Israel turned back to the Lord.(AR) So Samuel said to all the Israelites, “If you are returning(AS) to the Lord with all your hearts, then rid(AT) yourselves of the foreign gods and the Ashtoreths(AU) and commit(AV) yourselves to the Lord and serve him only,(AW) and he will deliver(AX) you out of the hand of the Philistines.” So the Israelites put away their Baals and Ashtoreths, and served the Lord only.

Then Samuel(AY) said, “Assemble all Israel at Mizpah,(AZ) and I will intercede(BA) with the Lord for you.” When they had assembled at Mizpah,(BB) they drew water and poured(BC) it out before the Lord. On that day they fasted and there they confessed, “We have sinned against the Lord.” Now Samuel was serving as leader[e](BD) of Israel at Mizpah.

When the Philistines heard that Israel had assembled at Mizpah, the rulers of the Philistines came up to attack them. When the Israelites heard of it, they were afraid(BE) because of the Philistines. They said to Samuel, “Do not stop crying(BF) out to the Lord our God for us, that he may rescue us from the hand of the Philistines.” Then Samuel(BG) took a suckling lamb and sacrificed it as a whole burnt offering to the Lord. He cried out to the Lord on Israel’s behalf, and the Lord answered him.(BH)

10 While Samuel was sacrificing the burnt offering, the Philistines drew near to engage Israel in battle. But that day the Lord thundered(BI) with loud thunder against the Philistines and threw them into such a panic(BJ) that they were routed before the Israelites. 11 The men of Israel rushed out of Mizpah and pursued the Philistines, slaughtering them along the way to a point below Beth Kar.

12 Then Samuel took a stone(BK) and set it up between Mizpah and Shen. He named it Ebenezer,[f](BL) saying, “Thus far the Lord has helped us.”

13 So the Philistines were subdued(BM) and they stopped invading Israel’s territory. Throughout Samuel’s lifetime, the hand of the Lord was against the Philistines. 14 The towns from Ekron(BN) to Gath that the Philistines had captured from Israel were restored to Israel, and Israel delivered the neighboring territory from the hands of the Philistines. And there was peace between Israel and the Amorites.(BO)

15 Samuel(BP) continued as Israel’s leader(BQ) all(BR) the days of his life. 16 From year to year he went on a circuit from Bethel(BS) to Gilgal(BT) to Mizpah, judging(BU) Israel in all those places. 17 But he always went back to Ramah,(BV) where his home was, and there he also held court(BW) for Israel. And he built an altar(BX) there to the Lord.

John 6:1-21

Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand(A)

Some time after this, Jesus crossed to the far shore of the Sea of Galilee (that is, the Sea of Tiberias), and a great crowd of people followed him because they saw the signs(B) he had performed by healing the sick. Then Jesus went up on a mountainside(C) and sat down with his disciples. The Jewish Passover Festival(D) was near.

When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward him, he said to Philip,(E) “Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?” He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do.

Philip answered him, “It would take more than half a year’s wages[a] to buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!”

Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother,(F) spoke up, “Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?”(G)

10 Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” There was plenty of grass in that place, and they sat down (about five thousand men were there). 11 Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks,(H) and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted. He did the same with the fish.

12 When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, “Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted.” 13 So they gathered them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten.

14 After the people saw the sign(I) Jesus performed, they began to say, “Surely this is the Prophet who is to come into the world.”(J) 15 Jesus, knowing that they intended to come and make him king(K) by force, withdrew again to a mountain by himself.(L)

Jesus Walks on the Water(M)

16 When evening came, his disciples went down to the lake, 17 where they got into a boat and set off across the lake for Capernaum. By now it was dark, and Jesus had not yet joined them. 18 A strong wind was blowing and the waters grew rough. 19 When they had rowed about three or four miles,[b] they saw Jesus approaching the boat, walking on the water;(N) and they were frightened. 20 But he said to them, “It is I; don’t be afraid.”(O) 21 Then they were willing to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat reached the shore where they were heading.

Psalm 106:13-31

13 But they soon forgot(A) what he had done
and did not wait for his plan to unfold.(B)
14 In the desert(C) they gave in to their craving;
in the wilderness(D) they put God to the test.(E)
15 So he gave them(F) what they asked for,
but sent a wasting disease(G) among them.

16 In the camp they grew envious(H) of Moses
and of Aaron, who was consecrated to the Lord.
17 The earth opened(I) up and swallowed Dathan;(J)
it buried the company of Abiram.(K)
18 Fire blazed(L) among their followers;
a flame consumed the wicked.
19 At Horeb they made a calf(M)
and worshiped an idol cast from metal.
20 They exchanged their glorious God(N)
for an image of a bull, which eats grass.
21 They forgot the God(O) who saved them,
who had done great things(P) in Egypt,
22 miracles in the land of Ham(Q)
and awesome deeds(R) by the Red Sea.
23 So he said he would destroy(S) them—
had not Moses, his chosen one,
stood in the breach(T) before him
to keep his wrath from destroying them.

24 Then they despised(U) the pleasant land;(V)
they did not believe(W) his promise.
25 They grumbled(X) in their tents
and did not obey the Lord.
26 So he swore(Y) to them with uplifted hand
that he would make them fall in the wilderness,(Z)
27 make their descendants fall among the nations
and scatter(AA) them throughout the lands.

28 They yoked themselves to the Baal of Peor(AB)
and ate sacrifices offered to lifeless gods;
29 they aroused the Lord’s anger(AC) by their wicked deeds,(AD)
and a plague(AE) broke out among them.
30 But Phinehas(AF) stood up and intervened,
and the plague was checked.(AG)
31 This was credited to him(AH) as righteousness
for endless generations(AI) to come.

32 When calamity comes, the wicked are brought down,(A)
but even in death the righteous seek refuge in God.(B)

1 Samuel 2:22-4:22, John 5:24-47, Psalms 106:1-12, Proverbs 14:30-31

Today is the 8th of May. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian. It’s great to be here with you today and gather around the global campfire and prepare to take the next step forward on our journey, which will lead us cover to cover through the Bible. And we’re well on our way in this journey. We began a new era in the scriptures as we began the book of 1 Samuel yesterday and we talked about Samuel. And we’re getting to know him in the scriptures. And so we’ll dive back in and pick up where we left off yesterday. We’re reading from the New International Version this week. 1 Samuel chapter 2 verse 22 through the end of chapter 4 today.

Commentary:

Okay. So, quite a bit of drama happening in 1 Samuel. The Ark of the Covenant is lost in battle, the high priest Eli dies as well as his sons. Let’s remember we’re still in the time of the judges, so a lot of anarchy. Samuel is growing up to be the last judge and he will definitely shift the culture through his leadership and through his life. I mean, culture doesn’t charge overnight. Like, for example, in our lifetimes, culture has shifted many times because culture is constantly shifting. But this doesn’t happen overnight, right? You have some who are wanting to move progressively into a brave new world and you have others who are wanting to move back to a place of safety that is known. And so, you know, you have people moving in opposite directions and then you have those who are kind of just exploiting the fears in all of it. And culture just moves and shifts like a wave on the sea. And so we’ve been seeing some of those downturns as we’ve moved through the book of Judges over those generations and we’re still in that time. So, we have the high priest Eli and we’ve got his sons who are exploiting the people in a lot of different ways and have no reverence for the fact that they stand in the Lord’s presence representing God to God’s people. But that has not worked out so well for them and now Samuel will rise to prominence as a leader.

When we get to the book of Proverbs today we are left with some things to think about. A heart at peace gives life to the body. So, let’s try to understand what we’re talking about here. What is a heart at peace? This is a heart that is free from disturbance. What we would these days call drama. It’s a heart that has found a place of tranquility. In fact, some translations use that word. A tranquil heart. A heart that is at ease, that is calmed, that is quieted. This, according to the Proverbs, gives life to the body. So, we can stop there. We’re only halfway through this verse but we can stop there and we can ask those questions. Is that true of me? Is my heart at peace? Or am I riddled with anxiety and being pulled in every sort of direction and find myself in drama no matter where I step? Well then that’s not a heart at peace. Which would explain maybe why we’re not…we don’t have a body at peace either. A heart at peace gives life to the body. And then the Proverb goes on because it’s a complete sentence. We’ve only read half the sentence. So, it completes itself, giving us some clues at what disrupts a heart at peace. Envy rots the bones. Now envy is a pretty big and ancient word, being a deadly sin and all, but it’s not a word that we use commonly now. So, exactly what is it that rots our bones? Envy is a feeling of being discontented inside that comes from a longing for something that’s missing that you think or see that someone else has. And so that longing turns into resentment because they have something that you long for and you’re discontented about it. And so it arouses this unease that spawns jealousy and coveting. Which boils down to one way that we as people try to achieve an identity that will never ever work. Comparison. And those of you ladies that were at the More Gathering this year, you know that Jill and the team spoke extensively about this exact thing, comparison. Obviously, I’m not a lady. But as it turns out, this is something very, very common among women. Comparing yourself to other women constantly, wherever you go. Like walking into a room and being able to spot the most beautiful put-together woman and disliking her outright, right off the bat. I mean, it’s not a woman…it’s not a gender thing. I mean, this is throughout humanity. Comparing ourselves to one another. Looking at how much better we’re doing than someone else or how someone is doing so much better than we are and longing for that is envy. It’s a way of trying to achieve an identity that is false from the get go. Your life is not her life. His life is not your life. What they have achieved is not your story, right? So, you can get on social media or whatever and start flipping through the pages and find yourself deep in envy. Because all of those people you used to know twenty years ago or whatever seem to be doing better than you are. But what we’re looking at is the curated life that’s the best version of that person’s life and then we’re envying it. And it’s them on their best day and it’s not even real. And we just see how quickly we can slip into envy. And if we’ll observe ourselves, literally if we’ll step away and try to catch ourselves every time that we move toward envy, we’ll see that we’re doing it more than we think. The problem is, envy leads us into disturbance inside of ourselves, right? It destroys the tranquility and quiet and peace of our own story. So, it doesn’t give life to the body. It actually works against it. It rots the bones. So, if jealousy and comparison are a constant companion in your life, then this is working against you. If those are issues, well then there’s envy and it is rotting you. And this boils down to the fact that you are trying to bolster or get, achieve an identity that is someone else’s. So, you’re saying, my life, this gift, these breaths, this awareness, this consciousness, this me that I’ve been given as a gift from God is not what I want. It’s not enough. I want someone else’s life. And so rather than changing our own lives to aim in a direction that feels more true to who we are, we just sit and take pot shots at people who we think have what we want. There is no life in that. It’s a complete non-starter. It rots the bones. And, so, let’s try to step outside of ourselves and watch ourselves when we move toward envy. Find those places, those triggers that are constantly pulling us into comparison and consider that that is rotting our bones. And may we remember we’re here as a gift for a reason. We have our own story to tell. No one else can tell it. And we’re telling it everyday through our choices, our motives, our heart. And if our heart is full of envy, than we’re not telling the story we wanna be telling. We’re just rotting our bones. But a heart at peace, one that is tranquil, gives life to the body.

Prayer:

So, Holy Spirit, we invite into that. We invite You into things everyday because Your Word brings up things we need to think about and gives us clarity. And there’s significant clarity in this one sentence. A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones. And so we ask, Holy Spirit, that You would show us the places that we are rotting away in envy and we reject that. We reject it in the name of Jesus. The only way we will ever have an identity is that it be bestowed upon us by You. And the fact that we are here is proof that You have given us an identity. And so we seek our identity in You and You alone and ask Your Holy Spirit to give us a heart at peace and life to our bodies. Come Holy Spirit we pray. In Jesus name. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

This message is for Terry the truck driver. Terry, this is Bob from Michigan and I just want you to know that you don’t have to worry about the assurance of your salvation because if you have given your life to Christ He hasn’t forgotten. You’re in. Terry, you are not a truck driver. You are not an addict. You are a child of God. He loves you. You are made in His image and likeness and He loves you to pieces. We have all fallen short Terry. We’re all, once we’re saved, on that road to sanctification, where we’re desperately trying to be more Christlike every day but we slip, we fall, we fall back. I’m reminded of second Corinthians chapter 1 verse 9. It says, indeed, we felt we had received the sentence of death but this happened that we might not rely on ourselves but on God who raises the dead. So, Terry, the only way out of this pit is with God’s power. You need to start every day with what I call ‘kill and fill’. Dear God, kill the sinful desires of my flesh and fill me with Your Holy Spirit, with Your healing Holy Spirit. Terry you’ve been trying for 30 years to stop these habits on your own and it hasn’t worked has it? God is the only one that can pull you out of the pit that you’re in and put your feet on a rock. Just read Psalm 40. Put your trust in Him and He will pull you through. You are not riding as a Lone Ranger out there. There are many of us who sin and have fallen back.

My name is Jeanette. I’m from Tulsa Oklahoma and back in March, Deborah in Michigan called in requesting…actually she didn’t request prayer…she wanted to call in and just tell Brian and Jill how grateful she was. And I just wanted to echo that. When I first started listening to the Daily Audio Bible the first year, the end of that first year, it was like somebody stood up on the inside of me. And that second year when I listened, it was like there were bones that now had muscle on them. And there was a year or two ago when Brian, you were going to, you wanted to change the end greeting, what is it, the salutation. And I think everybody called in and said, ‘don’t change it…when you’re saying at the end that you love us and that you’ll be waiting for us here tomorrow’, just, when you hear that, I can’t even explain what that does to someone who is dry and wary. So, I just wanted to thank you Brian and Jill. We just want to speak blessings over your family, peace and prosperity. We just want to honor you for what you’re doing. Honor and glory and power to the one who has brought you to this place, to provide this podcast. Thank you. Thank you so much. God bless you. Bye.

Hi Daily Audio Bible family. I’ve been a listener for about two years now. You can call me Hopeful. And I’m calling because, it’s hard for me to call. I always pray with everyone who calls in. And thank you so much for what you do Brian and all the regulars. It just, it feels like a family. It’s such an amazing experience. I never feel like I should call in because, I know that I’m praying with everyone, I don’t feel like I need to say it, but I’m calling for, I don’t know of his selfish, but it’s for myself and my family, my husband. We just haven’t been able to have children. It’s been a really long hard struggle. I had one miscarriage…and…just…we both want children so bad. And I’ll be 40 this year. So, I still pray and ask the Lord that He would bless us, but I’m just kind of losing hope now. The doctors pretty much have told me it’s almost impossible. So…I just…but I know nothing can stop the will of Christ. And, so, I would love your prayers and just to stay hopeful and I’m not giving up and I know a lot of people have kind of nicely tried to let me know that it’s probably too late but I’m not giving up. And I’m praying for all of you and with you and I just thank you so much for your encouragement, your encouraging words and prayers. Please keep me in your prayers as well. Thank you.

Hi family. My name is Diana. Call me Fearless in Love. Today is May 5th and we heard the story of Ruth and Naomi begin today. I named my daughter Naomi and it means sweet. She is so sweet and kind. And I would like you to pray for her. She’s 4 years old and I want her to grow in love. And that was my mantra. There is no fear in love but perfect love casts out all fear. I had a lot of fear but God helped me get rid of it and make it into love because He is love and I want that for her and all the children. Let’s pray. Dear God, thank You for Your perfect love. Thank You for this story of two women, a mother and a daughter who loved each other even though they weren’t blood. Help us to love like that every day. Amen. Family thank you for all your prayers for me even though I haven’t called before and know that I pray for all of you. I want to pray for Diana D. who I heard previously. Sister, you are in my prayers and I love you. In Jesus name. Amen.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Tuesday May 8, 2018 (NIV)

1 Samuel 2:22-4

22 Now Eli, who was very old, heard about everything(A) his sons were doing to all Israel and how they slept with the women(B) who served at the entrance to the tent of meeting. 23 So he said to them, “Why do you do such things? I hear from all the people about these wicked deeds of yours. 24 No, my sons; the report I hear spreading among the Lord’s people is not good. 25 If one person sins against another, God[a] may mediate for the offender; but if anyone sins against the Lord, who will(C) intercede(D) for them?” His sons, however, did not listen to their father’s rebuke, for it was the Lord’s will to put them to death.

26 And the boy Samuel continued to grow(E) in stature and in favor with the Lord and with people.(F)

Prophecy Against the House of Eli

27 Now a man of God(G) came to Eli and said to him, “This is what the Lord says: ‘Did I not clearly reveal myself to your ancestor’s family when they were in Egypt under Pharaoh? 28 I chose(H) your ancestor out of all the tribes of Israel to be my priest, to go up to my altar, to burn incense,(I) and to wear an ephod(J) in my presence. I also gave your ancestor’s family all the food offerings(K) presented by the Israelites. 29 Why do you[b] scorn my sacrifice and offering(L) that I prescribed for my dwelling?(M) Why do you honor your sons more than me by fattening yourselves on the choice parts of every offering made by my people Israel?’

30 “Therefore the Lord, the God of Israel, declares: ‘I promised that members of your family would minister before me forever.(N)’ But now the Lord declares: ‘Far be it from me! Those who honor me I will honor,(O) but those who despise(P) me will be disdained.(Q) 31 The time is coming when I will cut short your strength and the strength of your priestly house, so that no one in it will reach old age,(R) 32 and you will see distress(S) in my dwelling. Although good will be done to Israel, no one in your family line will ever reach old age.(T) 33 Every one of you that I do not cut off from serving at my altar I will spare only to destroy your sight and sap your strength, and all your descendants(U) will die in the prime of life.

34 “‘And what happens to your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, will be a sign(V) to you—they will both die(W) on the same day.(X) 35 I will raise up for myself a faithful priest,(Y) who will do according to what is in my heart and mind. I will firmly establish his priestly house, and they will minister before my anointed(Z) one always. 36 Then everyone left in your family line will come and bow down before him for a piece of silver and a loaf of bread and plead,(AA) “Appoint me to some priestly office so I can have food to eat.(AB)”’”

The Lord Calls Samuel

The boy Samuel ministered(AC) before the Lord under Eli. In those days the word of the Lord was rare;(AD) there were not many visions.(AE)

One night Eli, whose eyes(AF) were becoming so weak that he could barely see,(AG) was lying down in his usual place. The lamp(AH) of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the house(AI) of the Lord, where the ark(AJ) of God was. Then the Lord called Samuel.

Samuel answered, “Here I am.(AK) And he ran to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.”

But Eli said, “I did not call; go back and lie down.” So he went and lay down.

Again the Lord called, “Samuel!” And Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.”

“My son,” Eli said, “I did not call; go back and lie down.”

Now Samuel did not yet know(AL) the Lord: The word(AM) of the Lord had not yet been revealed(AN) to him.

A third time the Lord called, “Samuel!” And Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.”

Then Eli realized that the Lord was calling the boy. So Eli told Samuel, “Go and lie down, and if he calls you, say, ‘Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.’” So Samuel went and lay down in his place.

10 The Lord came and stood there, calling as at the other times, “Samuel! Samuel!(AO)

Then Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant is listening.”

11 And the Lord said to Samuel: “See, I am about to do something in Israel that will make the ears of everyone who hears about it tingle.(AP) 12 At that time I will carry out against Eli everything(AQ) I spoke against his family—from beginning to end. 13 For I told him that I would judge his family forever because of the sin he knew about; his sons blasphemed God,[c] and he failed to restrain(AR) them. 14 Therefore I swore to the house of Eli, ‘The guilt of Eli’s house will never be atoned(AS) for by sacrifice or offering.’”

15 Samuel lay down until morning and then opened the doors of the house of the Lord. He was afraid to tell Eli the vision, 16 but Eli called him and said, “Samuel, my son.”

Samuel answered, “Here I am.”

17 “What was it he said to you?” Eli asked. “Do not hide(AT) it from me. May God deal with you, be it ever so severely,(AU) if you hide from me anything he told you.” 18 So Samuel told him everything, hiding nothing from him. Then Eli said, “He is the Lord; let him do what is good in his eyes.”(AV)

19 The Lord was with(AW) Samuel as he grew(AX) up, and he let none(AY) of Samuel’s words fall to the ground. 20 And all Israel from Dan to Beersheba(AZ) recognized that Samuel was attested as a prophet of the Lord.(BA) 21 The Lord continued to appear at Shiloh, and there he revealed(BB) himself to Samuel through his word.

And Samuel’s word came to all Israel.

The Philistines Capture the Ark

Now the Israelites went out to fight against the Philistines. The Israelites camped at Ebenezer,(BC) and the Philistines at Aphek.(BD) The Philistines deployed their forces to meet Israel, and as the battle spread, Israel was defeated by the Philistines, who killed about four thousand of them on the battlefield. When the soldiers returned to camp, the elders of Israel asked, “Why(BE) did the Lord bring defeat on us today before the Philistines? Let us bring the ark(BF) of the Lord’s covenant from Shiloh,(BG) so that he may go with us(BH) and save us from the hand of our enemies.”

So the people sent men to Shiloh, and they brought back the ark of the covenant of the Lord Almighty, who is enthroned between the cherubim.(BI) And Eli’s two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.

When the ark of the Lord’s covenant came into the camp, all Israel raised such a great shout(BJ) that the ground shook. Hearing the uproar, the Philistines asked, “What’s all this shouting in the Hebrew(BK) camp?”

When they learned that the ark of the Lord had come into the camp, the Philistines were afraid.(BL) “A god has[d] come into the camp,” they said. “Oh no! Nothing like this has happened before. We’re doomed! Who will deliver us from the hand of these mighty gods? They are the gods who struck(BM) the Egyptians with all kinds of plagues(BN) in the wilderness. Be strong, Philistines! Be men, or you will be subject to the Hebrews, as they(BO) have been to you. Be men, and fight!”

10 So the Philistines fought, and the Israelites were defeated(BP) and every man fled to his tent. The slaughter was very great; Israel lost thirty thousand foot soldiers. 11 The ark of God was captured, and Eli’s two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, died.(BQ)

Death of Eli

12 That same day a Benjamite(BR) ran from the battle line and went to Shiloh with his clothes torn and dust(BS) on his head. 13 When he arrived, there was Eli(BT) sitting on his chair by the side of the road, watching, because his heart feared for the ark of God. When the man entered the town and told what had happened, the whole town sent up a cry.

14 Eli heard the outcry and asked, “What is the meaning of this uproar?”

The man hurried over to Eli, 15 who was ninety-eight years old and whose eyes(BU) had failed so that he could not see. 16 He told Eli, “I have just come from the battle line; I fled from it this very day.”

Eli asked, “What happened, my son?”

17 The man who brought the news replied, “Israel fled before the Philistines, and the army has suffered heavy losses. Also your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead,(BV) and the ark of God has been captured.”(BW)

18 When he mentioned the ark of God, Eli fell backward off his chair by the side of the gate. His neck was broken and he died, for he was an old man, and he was heavy. He had led[e](BX) Israel forty years.(BY)

19 His daughter-in-law, the wife of Phinehas, was pregnant and near the time of delivery. When she heard the news that the ark of God had been captured and that her father-in-law and her husband were dead, she went into labor and gave birth, but was overcome by her labor pains. 20 As she was dying, the women attending her said, “Don’t despair; you have given birth to a son.” But she did not respond or pay any attention.

21 She named the boy Ichabod,[f](BZ) saying, “The Glory(CA) has departed from Israel”—because of the capture of the ark of God and the deaths of her father-in-law and her husband. 22 She said, “The Glory(CB) has departed from Israel, for the ark of God has been captured.”(CC)

John 5:24-47

24 “Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me(A) has eternal life(B) and will not be judged(C) but has crossed over from death to life.(D) 25 Very truly I tell you, a time is coming and has now come(E) when the dead will hear(F) the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live. 26 For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life(G) in himself. 27 And he has given him authority to judge(H) because he is the Son of Man.

28 “Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming(I) when all who are in their graves will hear his voice 29 and come out—those who have done what is good will rise to live, and those who have done what is evil will rise to be condemned.(J) 30 By myself I can do nothing;(K) I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just,(L) for I seek not to please myself but him who sent me.(M)

Testimonies About Jesus

31 “If I testify about myself, my testimony is not true.(N) 32 There is another who testifies in my favor,(O) and I know that his testimony about me is true.

33 “You have sent to John and he has testified(P) to the truth. 34 Not that I accept human testimony;(Q) but I mention it that you may be saved.(R) 35 John was a lamp that burned and gave light,(S) and you chose for a time to enjoy his light.

36 “I have testimony weightier than that of John.(T) For the works that the Father has given me to finish—the very works that I am doing(U)—testify that the Father has sent me.(V) 37 And the Father who sent me has himself testified concerning me.(W) You have never heard his voice nor seen his form,(X) 38 nor does his word dwell in you,(Y) for you do not believe(Z) the one he sent.(AA) 39 You study[a] the Scriptures(AB) diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life.(AC) These are the very Scriptures that testify about me,(AD) 40 yet you refuse to come to me(AE) to have life.

41 “I do not accept glory from human beings,(AF) 42 but I know you. I know that you do not have the love of God in your hearts. 43 I have come in my Father’s name, and you do not accept me; but if someone else comes in his own name, you will accept him. 44 How can you believe since you accept glory from one another but do not seek the glory that comes from the only God[b]?(AG)

45 “But do not think I will accuse you before the Father. Your accuser is Moses,(AH) on whom your hopes are set.(AI) 46 If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me.(AJ) 47 But since you do not believe what he wrote, how are you going to believe what I say?”(AK)

Psalm 106(A)

Praise the Lord.[a](B)

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;(C)
his love endures forever.(D)

Who can proclaim the mighty acts(E) of the Lord
or fully declare his praise?
Blessed are those who act justly,(F)

Remember me,(H) Lord, when you show favor(I) to your people,
come to my aid(J) when you save them,
that I may enjoy the prosperity(K) of your chosen ones,(L)

and join your inheritance(N) in giving praise.

We have sinned,(O) even as our ancestors(P) did;
we have done wrong and acted wickedly.(Q)
When our ancestors were in Egypt,

Today is the 7th day of May. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian. It is wonderful, it’s a pleasure to be here with you today as we move into the work week and as we take the next step forward, moving our way through the month of May and moving ourselves through the territory that the month of May leads us in the Bible. And that brings us to a new book. We completed the book of Ruth yesterday, a beautiful oasis coming out of the book of Judges, where we see God’s faithfulness to those who are faithful. Which brings us to the book of 1 Samuel.

Introduction to the First Book of Samuel:

We’re really heading out of this territory of the Judges, the generations that follow Moses and Joshua and into a new era where kings will be introduced into the story and that will change the complexion and the culture again. So, this 1 Samuel which sort of indicates that there’s at least a 2 Samuel and there is. And the books of 1 and 2 Samuel, these are probably not authored by the prophet Samuel. It’s unclear who the author is. It seems from a historical perspective that these manuscripts 1 and 2 Samuel were written somewhere around the time that the kingdom divided. So, if this is your first pass through the Bible, it’s like what is…what is that? We haven’t got to that yet, but we will soon enough. So the books of 1 and 2 Samuel probably not authored by the prophet Samuel. It remains unclear who the author actually is. From a historical perspective, these books were likely written somewhere where the kingdom divided. And if this is your first pass through the Bible, you’re like, divided kingdom? What is all this? We’ll get to all that. As we go forward, we’ll see that the children of Israel, these people we’ve been following all year, one nation, they’ll divide themselves. They’ll separate. As they continue to fall away from God, they also fall away from each other. And they’ll separate into two kingdoms. And it seems that during the divided kingdom is likely when the books of Samuel were written. A good number of scholars believe that the material was originally recorded maybe by three prophets of Israel - Samuel, Nathan and Gad. 1 and 2 Samuel were both written in Hebrew. And they were not written as separate texts originally. So we have 1 and Samuel and then after that we have 1 and 2 Kings. And at one time these were all grouped together as a continuous text. So, when the Old Testament was translated into Greek, out of Hebrew into Greek, that was called the Septuagint. And at that point, these texts were divided into four different books known as the books of the kingdoms. So then when the Old Testament was translated into Latin, which is called the Vulgate, then they became the books of the kings. So these texts were then known as 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 Kings. And so now that everyone’s confused, what is now known as 1 and 2 Samuel was actually 1 and 2 Kings in the Latin translations, which means that what we now know as 1 and 2 Kings was then known as 3 and 4 Kings during that era. And this all changed to the accepted way that we have the Bible delineated now with Samuel, 1 and 2 Samuel and then 1 and 2 Kings, that all happened when King James commissioned a translation of the Bible in English. And, so, the way that we have the Bible delineated now goes back to 1611. And Samuel, as we’ll soon enough see, was a very influential person. He was the final judge of Israel. He also happened to be a prophet of God and served before the Lord as a priest. And during his life, Israel had pretty much fallen into anarchy.  And we’ve noticed that as we’ve gone through the book of Judges. Everyone was doing what they thought was right in their own eyes. So, Samuel steps in as a prophet and that begins to alleviate some of the anarchy because Samuel is speaking directly for God. And that is something that the children of Israel are accustomed to historically. Israel has never had a king, but they want one. And Samuel will be the one to introduce kingship into the civilization and culture of Israel. And the first king that we’ll meet, of course, is King Saul, the first king of Israel. And after him we’ll meet David, who will later become king. And we’ll watch pretty clearly, front row seat in fact, the terrible conflict that Saul has with David and all of the drama that that introduces. And speaking of kings, God warns the children of Israel not to do it. Not to take a king to rule over them. But, as usual, they take the path of their own choosing and introduce kings into their culture. And so we see spiritual guidance coming from the prophets and governance, national guidance, coming from the kings. But throughout the entire book, what’s really happening here is that a man-made kingdom is being established, the kingdom of Israel. And it will from this point on be the lens through which we’re looking at the Scriptures as we read the Old Testament. So, with all of that said, let’s dive in. We’re reading from the New International Version this week. 1 Samuel 1:1 -2:21 today.

Commentary:

Alright. So, we spent a little time before we began 1 Samuel kind of talking about the territory that we’re heading into. And then we began. So, we’ve been introduced to Samuel’s story. And this wife Hannah praying for this son because she was barren and giving this son back to God at Shiloh. Now Shiloh pre-dates Jerusalem as sort of the centerpiece of worship and culture for the Israelites. And we should understand that because it was almost four centuries, right? So, almost four hundred years. Just a little shy of four hundred years Shiloh was the place where the tabernacle was. Which means this was the center of the world for these people. This is where God was worshiped. This is where they would come to. So, this is why Elkanah and Hannah, as well as all the other Israelites who worshiped God, would come annually to make this sacrifice. They’d make this pilgrimage to Shiloh. Eventually that will be Jerusalem when the temple is built but there is no temple at this point. There is the tabernacle. And it’s situated in Shiloh. Shiloh, the ancient ruins of Shiloh, still exist. Been there several times. It’s a very very lovely place to be honest. It’s surrounded by hills and it’s very beautiful. And women still go to Shiloh. Women who are maybe having infertility issues, couples who are having infertility issues. They still go and pray at Shiloh for God to give them a child. And we usually try to make it to Shiloh when we go to Israel and do a pilgrimage each year. In part because of this story, Samuel is a very very influential person in the life of the early Israelites and is revered until this day. But, I mean, the tabernacle was there, so this was the center of worship. And so the Ark of the Covenant was there. And they’ve kind of located where the tabernacle would have been. And so it’s fascinating to just root yourself in the geography and be able to spin around in a circle and go, OK, these hills are the same hills and it all looks the same. This is how it was. And it has a timeless, timeless quality to it.

And when we get to the book of John, Jesus is at a location as well, the pools of Bethesda. Which are also still in existence. At least a portion of them. This apparently was a very, very grand pool and water supply and water source into Israel, but a lot of it has been found. And they kind of know where the rest of it is but there’s houses and stuff. There’s buildings on top. And part of this has been excavated and the part that is, I mean, you can see how grand it actually was. This isn’t like a little swimming pool that you might imagine. It was like a complex. So that still exists in Jerusalem. So, Jesus is there on a Sabbath day and he’s walking around. And that would have been a place to kind of walk around. It would have been beautiful and it would have been full of people. And he finds this man who’s been unable to walk for 38 years trying to get into the pool. Jesus asks him a simple question that should echo throughout our lives today. Do you want to get well? And we know how this story goes. The man does get well and Jesus gets in trouble for healing on the Sabbath and all this. But that question still lingers. Do you want to get well? It’s actually an important question because there’s all kinds of places that we want restoration. But do we want to get well? And are we doing our part in getting well? See, this man, he’d been sitting by this pool, waiting for a miracle for a long time. That was all he could do, but he was there every day doing his part. And he was made well, even though it took a long time. So, may we linger with the question today because, you know, if there’s something going on that you need (to be) moved out of the way or something in your body you need to be healed or something in your mind or heart or spirit, it’s easy to ask the question do you want to get well and immediately say, of course I want to get well. But it’s actually a big question. Do you? What would it look like if you were well? What would have to change if you were whole, if you were well? And it’s not just physical healing. It’s wholeness that we’re talking about here. Completeness. What would getting well even look like for you, right? Because when we move this from just a concept, a nebulous concept to naming things and specifying and understanding what well might actually look like and what that might actually do for our lives, then we know what we’re really talking about. When we name it, than we can see it. We can understand, contemplate. We can dream about it. So, consider today what if Jesus where to ask you the same question. Do you want to get well?  Do you even know what that might look like? Let’s invite the Holy Spirit into that question today.

Prayer:

Jesus, we do. We begin by inviting Your Holy Spirit. We know there are broken things inside of us. There’s no question about it, we know this. And we’ve desired healing and wholeness. It’s what our souls long for. It’s what we spend our life in search of. So, yes, we can say we wanna get well but we may not have even contemplated what that might look like, what that might do, where that might lead. And, so, we’re inviting Your Holy Spirit into the question today. What it might look like. Do we really want to get well in body, in mind, in heart, in spirit? Because to truly be well, we’ll have to surrender and be united with You, which is the invitation of the gospel. And that’s definitely gonna change some things. And, so, we consider and contemplate the question today as we invite Your Holy Spirit to show us a picture of what wholeness, what getting well, would look like for us so that we can see a picture of ourselves well. Come Holy Spirit, we pray. In Jesus name. Amen.

I know exactly what we’re talking about here. Things like Shiloh today or the pools of Bethesda. Those are all in the Promised Land films. So that resource and many others for the journey through the Scriptures in a year are available in the Daily Audio Bible shop. So, check that out.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Yes. This is David in South Carolina. I’ve been listening to the Daily Audio Bible since September of last year. And the first thing I want to say is, this is awesome. I just can’t tell you how much I get out of this every day. But I am calling this morning specifically for Terry. I was listening to May the 4th. He called in and he says he’s a truck driver. He said that he became a Christian when he was about 15. Got involved with drugs and alcohol about 18. __ assured his salvation. First of all, God can do that for you, but just know, you know, there’s a lot of people like you. I am dealing with my son. I just picked him up yesterday. He just got out of prison. And he’s about the same. So, I just want you to know, I’m going to be praying for you just like I’m praying for my son, every day. You are right there. And just know there’s nothing that God can’t do. You know that you are okay. So, I just wanted you to know that. I just could not resist. I’ve been working through this for the last couple weeks. Getting good at this. And I heard that this morning, __ regarding everything __ that he’s going through. As far as I’m concerned your my adopted son and I’m going to be praying for you just like him. And again, I want to thank you guys for what you’re doing here. This is awesome what you do. What a great ministry. Thank you very much.

Hello Daily Audio Bible. This is Terry. It’s Friday the 4th. I’ve just finished, been listening to the reading. That was me, the first one asking for prayer. I had called in Wednesday. I want to give you a praise report. Wednesday, I got in touch with a dear friend that I’d heard of grew up with knowing. She’s like a mother to me. And we talked. And I realized there was not peace in my heart. I was not saved. I hadn’t repented. But I want you all to know that I have…just know in my heart that I’m a child of God and that if I was to die right now I would be in heaven with my Lord. Thank you for putting my prayer request out there. I know that the whole Daily Audio Bible people, the audience couldn’t get to hear it. But all it took was Brian or whoever took my call. I know you’re all praying for me. Thank you. Thank you. Just thank you. God bless you. You all have a blessed day.

Hello, everyone this is BTD, Brian the Truck Driver. Hey, I’m calling in for Terry. I just heard you call in, Terry the truck driver. Terry, I just wanted to tell you that, being a truck driver myself, I completely understand what it’s like being out on the road and feeling lonely, but I want you to know that this Daily Audio Bible is a family. And we as a family are there with you man. So, you’re not alone. You’ve got us and you can always turn to us. You’ve also good God, He hasn’t left you. Something that I heard a long time ago, somebody told me, God doesn’t move. So, if we feel like God is near, who’s the one that moved? It’s us. So, all we’ve got to do is run back to Him. So, Terry all you gotta do man, run back to God. He’s full of loving and forgiving arms. And hy man if you need somebody to talk to, reach out to me on Facebook. Brian Schilling. Just look for me on Facebook. I’m the guy with a black shirt and the guitar. All right man I’ll be praying for you. Maybe I’ll hear from you maybe not. Hey everybody I love you. And I’ll talk to you again soon. Bye.

I am Karen from Australia. I’d like to share my heart with Terry the truck driver. Terry, we don’t go to heaven because we do good and we don’t go to hell because we do bad. We go to heaven because we made in Jesus our Lord and Savior and became a memory of his family. So, when received Jesus as your Savior almost 35 years ago, you became his brother and a child of God. Before you were born Jesus had already paid the price for your sin. All your sin, past, present, and future has already been forgiven and God can only see you as being righteous because you are in Jesus and He is in you. God doesn’t condemn you and He wants you to stop condemning yourself. Jesus doesn’t look on the things that you do or say. He looks on your heart and knows you better than you know yourself. He hears the cry of your heart, but uou make it hard for Him to help you believing the lies of the devil. Jesus wants you to believe Him. He wants you to truly believe that He took your sin away forever. He wants to truly believe He loves you unconditionally and eternally. He wants you to truly believe that He will never, He will never leave you or abandon you. He wants you to let go of all the sin you are holding against yourself and hand it all to Him. Trust of Jesus. He is faithful. Love you brother.

Today is the 6th day of May. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian. It’s great to be here with you today at the threshold of a shiny, sparkly, new week that we could walk in together. And we talk about it…I don’t even know where the tradition of shiny, sparkly new weeks came from. It’s just, every time we get a new Sunday, it’s like, this is a new week. Nothing’s been done yet, no mistakes have been made and we get to choose how we’re going to walk into this week. So, it’s exciting. It’s one of the examples of how God’s mercy is new every morning. And we get to start over. So, we’re moving into this new week, of course, picking up where we left off yesterday in the Scriptures, which would lead us back into the story of Ruth. And this week we’ll read from the New International Version. Ruth chapters 2 through 4.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word and we thank You for this shiny, new, sparkly week that we get to walk in together with the counsel of your Word, the fellowship of community, and the guidance of Your Holy Spirit. These are essential to us. So, we invite You to come. And Jesus, lead us forward into all truth into this week as we commit ourselves to following Your lead. Come, Holy Spirit. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hi neighbors. It’s Lisa the encourager. I am calling today, I was driving in my car, and I’m on a trip and I was listening to April the 30th and Viv from Canada called and said the most beautiful prayer for me and my husband. My husband Jeff lost his dad unexpectedly. He had a heart attack and it was just a shock to the whole family. And Viv, your prayer just meant the world to me and I’m sure others have been praying and I really just wanted to call to say thank you so much. I love you all so much and I appreciated your words, your kind words about asking God to shine his light upon us. Right as you were saying that the most beautiful sunlight just came through the car. It just meant the world to me and I just love you so much. I love your prayers Viv. And, also, I just want to thank everyone else. I know that Annette from Oklahoma reached out to me just at the right time. She had no idea what I was going through. And just God is so good to bring us all together when we go through these deep valleys of dark times. Just thank you all so much and I will get back on. But I’ll just say one more thing. If you would just pray for Jeff’s mom. He’s stayed with her a good week and a half after or a week after his dad passed. And, so, her name is Joan S. and it’s been very, very hard for her. So, if you’ll pray for her I would greatly appreciate it. I love you all so much. Thank you. Bye-bye.

Hi Daily Audio Bible family. This is Kristin from San Antonio. I wanted to give a praise report and share with the community how God’s been working in shifting my company culture and he’s opened up doors and opportunities to share his word. I started and completed his seven-week Bible study with several women in the office and we’re about to start our second one. So, praise the Lord for that. It’s been great. I ask for prayers and support of leadership and this next study and that I’ll be able to get more people involved so we can fellowship and grow closer together as we seek to grow closer to our heavenly Father. I also just want to take this opportunity to reach out and ask for prayers for my husband and for our marriage. He has unfortunately decided as of about a few weeks ago, that he wasn’t going to go to church with me and our kids anymore and that he doesn’t like the person that I’ve become. He clearly has a strong spiritual battle waging over him and he’s harmed his heart. Satan has blinded him so much to the truth of who God made him to be into the truth of who I am as his wife. And I just ask that you please join me in praying for the release of his strongholds and that God will soften his heart and renew his mind. He was not supportive that I recently went to the More Gathering and I feel like that has caused a bigger rift in the recent weeks and it’s just been really difficult. So, if you guys could please pray for that I would really appreciate it. And I love all of you guys so much. And thank you for your support.

Good morning it is beloved by him in Gloucester in the UK. It’s Thursday the 4th of May. I just listen to…while I’ve been listening to what Brian…what he has to say in any podcast…they all touch you don’t they? __ to be touched by my brother. And I think it was the first one. So, I’ve got a message to all of my brothers and sisters out there, my fellow believers in Christ. You are loved. You are so, so precious to God. You know, you are His creation. He knitted you together in your mother’s womb. He knows who you are. He knows who He created you to be. And He loves you, regardless. You know, we read the story of Jesus three times through now. That’s what God was prepared to do. That’s what Jesus was prepared to do for you. We know that we’re sinners. Don’t we? We know that we do wrong. We know that we do things against God. And we go to God for forgiveness and he forgives us. We believe that God so loved the world that he gave His only son so that whoever believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life because Jesus paid the price of our sin on the cross. As we listen to Him being crucified again and John, think, He did that for you because He loves you and me and everyone that much, so that we can have a relationship with Him. You are loved. You are precious. And one day, God will call us all home. But He has a purpose for us here now. You might not know what it is.

Hi this is Thirsty Cow from Sydney Australia. Few things today. So, I’ll just keep quick. Firstly, thank you so much for your prayers. My husband and I really have a sense of peace since I last called it. Even though there’s still a few things that were not sure of, but huge praise for that. Secondly, I’m really calling in after 3rd of May podcast. Wow, what a great traffic bite analogy that was. I mean, for me, it was just very convicting. It just hit the nail on the head. Such a hard concept of what faith and work with salvation. You know, it doesn’t help to keep saying I’m saved and go give me over and over because if I keep rushing and running a red lights, I mean, I’m destined for a crash. You know, we just need to stop at the red light. And it’s sort of like some of the phone calls I keep hearing for prayers of which I’m praying for. And, you know, I feel the pain there, but if there’s something you’re struggling with and your questioning, but you know deep down what God has to say about it, I mean, let’s just stop at the red light. Anyway, I mean, not only did it convict me but I sort of able was to be used today. It was amazing. As a colleague was leaving, I was in conversation, I just suddenly felt this urge to share this analogy with him. And he suddenly stopped me and he says, just before you started talking I heard this voice tell me, listen to what she’s about to say. This is for you. And that changed my day. You don’t know what’s going on in my life, but I was leading in so discouraged and confused and anguished and questioning God, but what you said in that analogy is exactly what I needed to hear. I was just in shock. I was shaking. I was almost in tears. I mean, wow, God can use the Daily Bible even through me. Hallelujah, at work. So that was amazing. Anyway, not long to go but I just wanted to let a few of you know, today, Jerry from the 4th of May, I’m praying for you. You are saved and you should know it. And God will work in you there. But that’s all. Thanks for your time. Thirsty Cow from Sydney.

Jerry, this is 4th of May. You called in. This is Michelle from Pennsylvania. You called in just asking for prayer over your addictions that you’ll be 50 this year. I am with you right there. And Terry know that you are a child of God. If you have accepted God and you have backslidden, confess those sins as you just did with your mouth and believe that He will save you. You start speaking those demons out of you, cast them out right now just as the demon possessed son. That father asked Jesus for him to help believe and not to doubt. Call on Jesus that He would help you not to doubt that He is real and that He is working in your life. He has never left you but you do need to deal with these things. Call on Him to cast out this addiction that you have for alcohol in the name of Jesus. And you start speaking truth into your life. Philippians 4:8, whatever is true and right, take nothing out. Take all other thoughts captive to the obedience of Christ. If it is something you shouldn’t be doing, He gives you a way of escape. You stand firm in what He says about you and you start speaking it out loud Terry. You say it. I am a child of God. I am the head and not the tail. I am found favor by God. I will walk in the path of the spirit and not by the flesh. Lord Jesus we just call on you now to help Terry through this. Show yourself in his life. Make his lips speak what the Holy Spirit gives him to speak and let it only be truth. Terry, you walk in truth and you know what truth is. Say it out loud. Cast the demon out and avoid those places that you have temptation and walk in the Spirit and speak God’s Script…
