Numbers 15:17-16:40, Mark 15:1-47, Psalms 54:1-7, Proverbs 11:5-6

Today is the 11th day of March. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian and here we are crossing the threshold, opening the door on a brand-new shiny, sparkly week. And this week will move us directly into the middle of the month of March. So, we’re moving forward in our year, in our lives, and in the Scriptures. We’ll read from the Christian Standard Bible this week, picking up where we left off yesterday. Numbers chapter 15 verse 17 through 16 verse 40 today.

Prayer:

Jesus as we begin this new week we again experience Your sacrifice, Your death on our behalf in unspeakable fashion in a fashion we can truly comprehend. And yet this is the season that we contemplate. This is the season that we stare full face at what sin can do and we see that were borne out on the cross. And we look into our own hearts and we look at the world and we see what sin can do. And this brings us to a place of lament because You have freed us from the power of sin and yet we continue to choose otherwise. Rather than freedom, we choose to remain in slavery to sin. In so many areas of our lives and we invite Your Holy Spirit because we find ourselves being like the children of Israel in the wilderness wanting to go back. Show us clearly Lord that going back is not only returning to slavery, it is moving away from life and toward death. Your sacrifice changed all of that for the entire world. And this is the good news, that this has all been changed, that humanity and divinity are no longer separated from one another but can be restored in fellowship through Your sacrifice. And, so yes, we invite Your Holy Spirit and we lament and we grieve over what we’ve made of things, but Your cross gives us hope, hope forever, restoration forever, that day by day we can choose to live holy and every day that we choose to live holy as a day of sanctification, that we are being restored day by day, moment by moment. And this gives us hope and brings us to place of gratefulness. And, so, we contemplate these things and we invite Your Holy Spirit. Come Holy Spirit. We ask in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Father God, we lift up Joey from Missouri’s family to You , especially his mother Joan E. Father God thank You for the shining light that she’s been in that family, that she has been the spiritual leader, leading Joey’s crisis at such a young age. Father God, she is struggling right now. I pray Lord that You’d be shining Your light and Your love into her life, that You would be bringing her out of that darkness and depression. Father God please just be calming her mind and giving her peace. May she know who she is in You and may she hear the truth of You in Your voice rather than the lies of the enemy. Father God I pray that You would be guiding her to people who can help, be that counselors or friends or people who can just help bring her through this time. Father God thank You for her loving family and I pray the Lord that You’d be giving them wisdom on how best to support her through this. Thank You so much for her and her walk in her life and her faith in You. And I pray Lord that you’d just be restoring her. In Jesus’ holy and precious name. Amen. Hi this is Michaela from Gloucester in the UK. Your call really struck me Joey. My parents married in 1982. I am the oldest of three, born in 1987. And they got divorced a couple years ago, probably more than a couple years ago now. And both my parents are really on my heart because my dad doesn’t know the Lord and I really want him to know the Lord but it’s really hard, you know, witnessing to those closest, isn’t it? So yeah, I hope you all have a blessed and lovely day wherever you are. Speak you soon. Bye.

Hello Daily Audio Bible family. This is Diana calling from Minnesota. I just returned from the Israel 2018 trip and would just like to encourage anyone thinking about it to absolutely go. As Brian says, it’s a life-changing event and it really truly is. It was the most impactful two weeks of my life. And I met the most incredible people on that two weeks. And, so I would just highly encourage you to go no matter what that takes. For some of us it was a great sacrifice to be able to save some money and be able to do that, but for me it was just everything and the meant to us a whole lot. I thank you so much for your prayers for all of us. We felt it. We actually did. We had some illnesses go through the bus, one of the buses. And they were very quick illnesses. And, so, people cared for each other and we are very grateful for that. I also wanted to call with a prayer request. During the trip I found out that a dear friend of mine has breast cancer. Her name is Lori and I just ask that you pray for her please. She actually has a really amazing attitude about it and her husband is a quadriplegic and he does have some use of his hands and has a rehab doctor an amazing person. And she is really very much the…it’s hard to say…she really does everything for her family. She’s a really strong woman and I’d just like everyone if you could please pray for her health. She’s going to go through a double mastectomy…

Hi everyone this is Melody from Canada. And I am very convicted when Brian was talking about a reading from God being mad at the Israelites for complaining about meat. I am there right now because in addition to pregnancy __ I have a virus it in my mouth that these really, really hard soars all over. So pretty much all I can eat every day is pea soup. So that’s my Manna. And before I was pregnant I could eat this and that and everything. But also, back then, I was longing for a baby and I wasn’t happy with my life. But it so easy to want to go back and it’s so easy to have a hard time in the wilderness and have a hard time and transition. So, I appreciate your prayers over me and my pea soup and my mouth and my baby. We’re getting the ultrasound in two days on Saturday. So, I’m looking towards that. And, so yeah, I know God is holding us and preparing us. Love you. Bye-bye.

My name is Christina. I’m calling because I just heard Joey from Missouri. And for some reason listening to your prayer request for your mom, I almost started crying and I get had to…I kept praying, you know, with the next caller and then I had to go back and listen to it and I think is what it was…and I think your mom and my sister Stacy have the same problem. It just…I really felt…I really felt that’s why it touched me so deeply. And I want to pray for your mom Sharon and for my sister Stacy as well, that they are set free. Lord, please set free these ladies who know you and who shouldn’t be held captive from the demons of depression and paranoia and anger and hurting the people around them. And I pray as well for Joey and his three siblings and for Stacy’s two little sons because it’s very hard in the people around them. Thank you.

Hi this is Victoria soldier. I’m calling to pray for some of the DABbers. I wanted to…welcome back to Brian and I want to say thank you to Jill for reading those two days that were so beautiful. I enjoyed it. Thank you so much. I also want to pray for Greg in Missouri he was talking about his mom that she’s going through depression and things that are challenging. I wanted to also pray for Nora from Canada and that she’s going through some challenges. I want to pray for Pastor Genne and also for Blind Tony and Viola and my friend Sharon. I’m just concerned about the challenges that she’s going through with her mom. I want to pray for those who will going through depression and those who are going through in their marriages because the enemy is trying to attack the marriages. And also those kids who are having strongholds. I want to pray for them. Lord, in the name of Jesus, I just ask You to have Your way. Lord, Your people lead You Lord. They’re going through challenges, they’re going through depression, they’re going through strongholds. The marriages are having challenges. Lord only You are our God who can do anything like You told Moses, that You are God and You could do anything but fail. Lord we want to pray for Nora Lord. Whatever Nora’s going through, whatever’s going through in her family, that mother that’s going through depression, the mother that went through the challenges with her son, Lord You have Your Way, Lord. Oh Lord, You’re a miracle working God and You can do anything but fail. I just want to tell somebody tonight that feels like giving up, hold on because God is carrying You and God loves You and He wants to let You know that all…that He is got to You in His hand and His hand is on You and to continue to trust Him. Oh Lord continue to bless those who…even if they feel like…

Numbers 14:1-15:16, Mark 1:53-72, Psalms 53:1-6, Proverbs 11:4

Today is the 10th day of March. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian. It’s great to be here with you. And here we are about to close the books on another week. And they just keep hopping by. Day by day, step by step, they just keep hopping by. So, here we are at the end of another week. And we have been reading from the New International Version this week, so we’ll do that for today. We’ll head back out into the desert. It’s getting kind of dramatic out there. Some spies have gone into the Promise Land, so the first people to go into the Promise Land and they’ve come back with a mixed bag, a mixed review. And we’ll pick up with that story. Numbers chapter 14 verse 1 through 15:16 today.

Commentary:

Okay. So, man, such bad news in the book of Numbers today. So, the children of Israel had received the law of Moses, began to operate accordingly, numbered themselves and prepared to move into the Promise Land. I mean, that’s what that ordering and how the tabernacle would be in the center, representing God with the people and the entire camp around it and how they would move out. All of this is for one purpose - to go into the Promised Land. Like, it’s time. And, so, one spy from each tribe of Israel was sent in to scout the land as we read. And they came back and it was a mixed bag. Only Joshua and Caleb were like, let’s do this. Like, it’s time. Finally, after all of these generations, right? This has been the story we’ve been following since the book of Genesis. So, now it’s finally time for them to go in but when the spies come back, they come back with a mixed report, which demoralizes the people and that’s that. They’re not going in. They’re going back out into the desert. And God is saying this entire generation doesn’t get to go in. And now that we have followed this whole trail in its context, we can see that at every turn God is shaping them, forcing them to depend on him. He is coming through. He is providing for them in a place where there is no way they could have that provision. He is guiding them miraculously. Their reputation has spread to all the people all around them and the people are unsettled to say the least. And we’ve watched. We’ve watched them grumble, we’ve watched them complain, we’ve watched them lament and say slavery was better than freedom. And, so, it’s important to realize that not only is this the children of Israel, this is our life. Like, it is all playing out. And we can read this as a story and go, you people are so stupid, what else would God need to do until we look in the mirror and go, oh my goodness. This is hitting me right between the eyes. And, so, what happens is, you know, a bunch of grumbling and then God tells them, okay, okay, it was going to be now. Like, we were going, but you need to turn around and go back into the wilderness. None of you get to go in. What that effectively does, as the Scriptures make pretty clear, is that there was a second generation. Kids had been born. There were children among them. Those children were all supposed to grow up in the Promised Land and they didn’t get to. Forty more years have to go by. Those children have to grow up. It’s the children that actually have to go into the Promise Land. And the first generation that was supposed to grow up completely in freedom and completely in the land that God had promised didn’t get to because their parents, their parents couldn’t get their mind out of slavery. They couldn’t get past their own stuff. So, instead of going into the land of promise, they’re going back out into the wilderness. And we have to ask ourselves, in our own lives how much wandering in the wilderness are we wanting to do? Is that going be the story of our lives? The wilderness - is that where we’re going to stay? Because like the children of Israel, we’re never going to be able to leave that place until we’ve learned the lessons that are given. Utter and total dependence on God is the only way forward. It has only ever been this way. And like the children of Israel, aren’t we still struggling with the same thing over and over and over? And don’t we hear our own voices grumbling and grumbling and grumbling? And hasn’t God continued to come through when we will trust him? Like, we make so many messes for ourselves that don’t need to be made. And we wander a lot of years that we don’t need to wander until we learn that we are utterly and completely dependent upon God and that vigilance over our hearts and a close fellowship with God is the only way to know what the next right step is going to be, then we’ll continue to take some steps in the right direction and some steps in the wrong direction. And basically, you know, like when you’re taking certain steps in certain directions and then you move in another direction and you start walking that way for a while and then you turn and walk another direction for a little while, that’s called wandering. And that’s what we will watch the children of Israel do and we will be invited to decide, is that going to be our story or can we learn the lesson of the wilderness and become utterly dependent on God?

Prayer:

So, Father, that’s a tough one because we try and do things in our own strength all the time. And it’s true, we find ourselves moving in one direction for a while then another then another then another and yeah, that’s wandering. So Holy Spirit, come. We become aware of Your presence. We give ourselves to You completely. We acknowledge that we are utterly dependent upon You and anything that would tell us otherwise is not true. We confess our grumbling spirit to You. We have certainly done that many, many, many times. And we ask forgiveness. We keep getting deceived into thinking that we’ve got to figure this all out because You might not come through. And that is simply not true. So, we trust you. Wherever this road is going, as long as we are going with You, as long as we are in fellowship with you, our allegiance is to You and we are vigilant about that relationship, we’re going in the right direction. So, come Holy Spirit. Lead us out of our wanderings, we pray. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hey Daily Audio family. It’s Rick from Massachusetts. Thanks go to Brian and Jill and all the Hardin family, Mike, and all the workers behind the scenes. Blessings to all the DAB family. May the Lord bless you and He keep you. May the Lord shine His face upon you and be gracious to all of you listening. I’m calling today in response to Nora’s call from March 5th. Nora, I came out of a belief system that included works to make it to heaven. I believe it would be astonishingly true that when it’s broken down most people actually think they need to do something in order to get to heaven. That is the difference between Christianity and all other belief systems in the world. They all say do, do, do. Christianity and Jesus says, done. It is finished. Romans 10:10 says, believe in your heart that Jesus is Lord and confess with your mouth and you will be saved. Most people have a propensity or thought process to either think we need to do something or perform to a certain level in order to be worthy for heaven. Accepting Christ is not performing to a standard in order to be worthy. It is coming to Him knowing we can’t do it, coming to Him because he did it. He led the perfect life and offers it to us in exchange for our simple life. So, Nora don’t be deceived to believe you need to perform. Jesus already did. Nora, by trusting in Jesus you are the righteousness of God in Christ, second Corinthians 5:21. Mistakes cannot change that when you trust in Jesus. That’s why He’s our Savior and where not. Alleluia.

Hello, this is Intercessor from Delaware. It’s been a while since I called in but I listen every day. And just now my heart was just overjoyed to hear a call that came in from Nora, I believe her name is from Canada. Nora, you touched my heart so deeply and I want you to know sister that I’m praying for you and I know God has some wonderful blessings that He will bless you with as you seek Him, as you get into His presence and get to know Him. He has…His Holy Spirit is actually wooing you and He will give you great understanding. I would love to communicate with you and just to inspire you to read your Bible and just to be a source of some resources for you. So, if you’re on Facebook, just go to the school of prayer or Facebook FACC School of Prayer. Leave a message your email address on there and I will send you some resources. And sister I pray shalom over you, God’s wholeness, fullness, completeness. His perfectness, peace, prosperity, soundness of mind, heart, spirit, and soul, His tranquility, harmony, His rest. Rest in Him my sister. He loves you. His safety, welfare, and His good health. All this was paid for by Christ Jesus. I love you. Be encouraged. You have some wonderful days ahead of you. God will speak His purposes and dreams into you through His Holy Spirit. God bless you.

Hi Daily Bible folks. I’m a new member, just started in January, 1st of the year, really enjoying the Daily Bible. I do have a prayer request for my wife who’s just had a full hip replacement, a right hip. And she is suffering through quite a bit of pain. And we would appreciate the team praying for her. And she’ll be coming home tomorrow. She is being discharged from the rehabilitation center. Yeah, it’s still going to be quite a bit of pain connected with the hip replacement. And those of you who have had it will know that, obviously, there’s a lot of healing that has to take place. Appreciate all the prayers that you could give us. And again, this is Jeff R. My wife’s name is Judy Ann R. And we look forward to listening to the program every day. Thank you very much for your prayers. And God bless everyone. In Jesus’ precious name, we pray. Amen.

Hello Daily Audio Bible family. My name is Susie in Savannah. I just wanted to call and say that I’m new to the Daily Audio Bible. I just started listening this past January 2018 and I am so impressed and humbled and thankful for all of you and especially for Brian Hardin and for Jill and for all the work and all your staff that go into this daily reading of God’s living and breathing word. You truly do make a difference. So, kudos to you for doing this. I know that it’s a lot of work. I know it’s a labor of love to you and that you show that love to us. It shines through in your voices. So, thank you so much. You have made a tremendous difference in my life. And I just wanted to say that I really appreciate Blind Tony who calls in with his beautiful poems. I am part of a group that prays in front of the abortion clinic here in Savannah and I use his poems as part of the outreach on the sidewalk in front of the abortion clinic. I read them out loud to the women as their going into the abortion clinic and they touch the women’s heart. And, so, I wanted to let Tony know that. So, keep up with those beautiful poems. Brian keep up the reading. And Jill, when you fill in for him, I’m so excited to hear your voice and hear about the More Gathering. I hope I can come someday. But mostly I wanted to say thank you, thank you, thank you, so much for what you do and thank you to the Daily Audio Bible family.

Hello this is Teresa from Florida. I’m a new listener, well starting this year. Calling in earlier in January for some prayer requests for my husband who is was having an affair and was wanting to leave. I want to thank all of you for the prayers and to let you know that the affair has ended and we are now together. We are still struggling day by day, but we are going to make it. Working through the power of Christ and prayer we’re going to make it. We’re still struggling financially, struggling with my family, his family is not here and that just distresses him greatly and my family has a lot of problems. But pray for our continued love for each other, for our family, for our marriage. And that, you know, I want to thank you and I want to praise God for answering my prayers and for keeping my marriage together. And he is not a believer but I stand strong in the belief that he will be. He will come to it with God’s love and your prayers and my prayers and my love. And I just want to thank you. And I want to thank you Brian. And may God bless you and continue to prosper this ministry. Thank you.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Sunday March 11, 2018 (NIV)

Numbers 15:17-16:40

17 The Lord instructed Moses: 18 “Speak to the Israelites and tell them: After you enter the land where I am bringing you, 19 you are to offer a contribution to the Lord when you eat from the food of the land. 20 You are to offer a loaf from your first batch of dough(A) as a contribution; offer it just like a contribution from the threshing floor.(B) 21 Throughout your generations, you are to give the Lord a contribution from the first batch of your dough.

22 “When you sin unintentionally and do not obey all these commands that the Lord spoke to Moses(C) 23 all that the Lord has commanded you through Moses, from the day the Lord issued the commands and onward throughout your generations— 24 and if it was done unintentionally without the community’s awareness, the entire community is to prepare one young bull for a burnt offering as a pleasing aroma to the Lord, with its grain offering and drink offering according to the regulation, and one male goat as a sin offering. 25 The priest will then make atonement for the entire Israelite community so that they may be forgiven,(D) for the sin was unintentional. They are to bring their offering, one made by fire to the Lord, and their sin offering before the Lord for their unintentional sin. 26 The entire Israelite community and the alien who resides among them will be forgiven, since it happened to all the people unintentionally.

27 “If one person sins unintentionally,(E) he is to present a year-old female goat as a sin offering. 28 The priest will then make atonement before the Lord on behalf of the person who acts in error sinning unintentionally, and when he makes atonement for him, he will be forgiven. 29 You are to have the same law for the person who acts in error, whether he is an Israelite or an alien who resides among you.

30 “But the person who acts defiantly,[a] whether native or resident alien, blasphemes the Lord.(F) That person is to be cut off from his people. 31 He will certainly be cut off, because he has despised the Lord’s word and broken his command; his guilt remains on him.”

Sabbath Violation

32 While the Israelites were in the wilderness, they found a man gathering wood on the Sabbath day.(G) 33 Those who found him gathering wood brought him to Moses, Aaron, and the entire community. 34 They placed him in custody because it had not been decided what should be done to him. 35 Then the Lord told Moses, “The man is to be put to death. The entire community is to stone him outside the camp.”(H) 36 So the entire community brought him outside the camp and stoned him to death, as the Lord had commanded Moses.

Tassels for Remembrance

37 The Lord said to Moses, 38 “Speak to the Israelites and tell them that throughout their generations they are to make tassels(I) for the corners of their garments, and put a blue cord on the tassel at each corner. 39 These will serve as tassels for you to look at, so that you may remember all the Lord’s commands and obey them and not prostitute yourselves by following your own heart(J) and your own eyes.(K) 40 This way you will remember and obey all my commands and be holy to your God. 41 I am the Lord your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt to be your God; I am the Lord your God.”(L)

Korah Incites Rebellion

16 Now Korah son of Izhar, son of Kohath, son of Levi,(M) with Dathan and Abiram,(N) sons of Eliab, and On son of Peleth, sons of Reuben, took two hundred and fifty prominent Israelite men who were leaders of the community and representatives in the assembly, and they rebelled against Moses. They came together against Moses and Aaron and told them, “You have gone too far! Everyone in the entire community is holy, and the Lord is among them.(O) Why then do you exalt yourselves above the Lord’s assembly?”

When Moses heard this, he fell facedown. Then he said to Korah and all his followers, “Tomorrow morning the Lord will reveal who belongs to him, who is set apart, and the one he will let come near(P) him. He will let the one he chooses(Q) come near him. Korah, you and all your followers are to do this: take firepans,(R) and tomorrow place fire in them and put incense on them before the Lord.(S) Then the man the Lord chooses will be the one who is set apart.(T) It is you Levites who have gone too far!”

Moses also told Korah, “Now listen, Levites! Isn’t it enough for you that the God of Israel has separated you from the Israelite community to bring you near to himself,(U) to perform the work at the Lord’s tabernacle, and to stand before the community to minister to them?(V) 10 He has brought you near, and all your fellow Levites who are with you, but you are pursuing the priesthood(W) as well. 11 Therefore, it is you and all your followers who have conspired against the Lord!(X) As for Aaron, who is he[b] that you should complain about him?”

12 Moses sent for Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, but they said, “We will not come! 13 Is it not enough that you brought us up from a land flowing with milk and honey to kill us in the wilderness?(Y) Do you also have to appoint yourself as ruler over us? 14 Furthermore, you didn’t bring us to a land flowing with milk and honey or give us an inheritance of fields and vineyards. Will you gouge out the eyes of these men?(Z) We will not come!”

15 Then Moses became angry and said to the Lord, “Don’t respect their offering. I have not taken one donkey from them or mistreated a single one of them.” 16 So Moses told Korah, “You and all your followers are to appear before the Lord tomorrow—you, they, and Aaron. 17 Each of you is to take his firepan, place incense on it, and present his firepan before the Lord—250 firepans. You and Aaron are each to present your firepan also.”

18 Each man took his firepan, placed fire in it, put incense on it, and stood at the entrance to the tent of meeting along with Moses and Aaron. 19 After Korah assembled the whole community against them at the entrance to the tent of meeting, the glory of the Lord(AA) appeared to the whole community. 20 The Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, 21 “Separate yourselves from this community so I may consume them instantly.”(AB)

22 But Moses and Aaron fell facedown(AC) and said, “God, God who gives breath to all,[c](AD) when one man sins, will you vent your wrath on the whole community?”(AE)

23 The Lord replied to Moses, 24 “Tell the community: Get away from the dwellings of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram.”

25 Moses got up and went to Dathan and Abiram, and the elders of Israel followed him. 26 He warned the community, “Get away now from the tents of these wicked men. Don’t touch anything that belongs to them,(AF) or you will be swept away because of all their sins.”(AG) 27 So they got away from the dwellings of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram. Meanwhile, Dathan and Abiram came out and stood at the entrance of their tents with their wives, children, and infants.

28 Then Moses said, “This is how you will know that the Lord sent me(AH) to do all these things and that it was not of my own will: 29 If these men die naturally as all people would, and suffer the fate of all, then the Lord has not sent me. 30 But if the Lord brings about something unprecedented, and the ground opens its mouth and swallows them along with all that belongs to them so that they go down alive into Sheol,(AI) then you will know that these men have despised the Lord.”

31 Just as he finished speaking all these words, the ground beneath them split open. 32 The earth opened its mouth and swallowed them and their households, all Korah’s people,(AJ) and all their possessions. 33 They went down alive into Sheol with all that belonged to them. The earth closed over them, and they vanished from the assembly. 34 At their cries, all the people of Israel who were around them fled because they thought, “The earth may swallow us too!” 35 Fire also came out from the Lord and consumed the 250 men who were presenting the incense.(AK)

36 Then the Lord spoke to Moses: 37 “Tell Eleazar son of Aaron the priest to remove the firepans from the burning debris, because they are holy, and scatter the fire far away. 38 As for the firepans of those who sinned at the cost of their own lives, make them into hammered sheets as plating for the altar, for they presented them before the Lord, and the firepans are holy. They will be a sign to the Israelites.”

39 So the priest Eleazar took the bronze firepans that those who were burned had presented, and they were hammered into plating for the altar, 40 just as the Lord commanded him through Moses. It was to be a reminder for the Israelites that no unauthorized person outside the lineage of Aaron should approach to offer incense before the Lord(AL) and become like Korah and his followers.

Mark 15

Jesus Faces Pilate

15 As(A) soon as it was morning, having held a meeting with the elders,(B) scribes,(C) and the whole Sanhedrin, the chief priests(D) tied Jesus up, led him away, and handed him over to Pilate.(E)

So Pilate asked him, “Are you the King(F) of the Jews?”(G)

He answered him, “You say so.”

And the chief priests accused him of many things. Pilate(H) questioned him again, “Aren’t you going to answer? Look how many things they are accusing you of!” But Jesus still did not answer, and so Pilate was amazed.

Jesus or Barabbas

At(I) the festival(J) Pilate(K) used to release for the people a prisoner whom they requested. There was one named Barabbas, who was in prison with rebels who had committed murder(L) during the rebellion.(M) The crowd came up and began to ask Pilate to do for them as was his custom. Pilate answered them, “Do you want me to release the King(N) of the Jews(O) for you?” 10 For he knew it was because of envy(P) that the chief priests had handed him over. 11 But the chief priests stirred up the crowd so that he would release Barabbas to them instead. 12 Pilate asked them again, “Then what do you want me to do with the one you call the King of the Jews?”

13 Again they shouted, “Crucify him!”

14 Pilate said to them, “Why? What has he done wrong?”

But they shouted all the more, “Crucify him!”

15 Wanting to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them; and after having Jesus flogged, he handed him over to be crucified.

Mocked by the Military

16 The(Q) soldiers led him away into the palace (that is, the governor’s residence(R)) and called the whole company together. 17 They dressed him in a purple(S) robe, twisted together a crown(T) of thorns, and put it on him. 18 And they began to salute him, “Hail,(U) King(V) of the Jews!” 19 They were hitting him on the head with a stick and spitting on him. Getting down on their knees,(W) they were paying him homage. 20 After they had mocked(X) him, they stripped him of the purple robe and put his clothes on him.

Crucified between Two Criminals

They led him out to crucify him. 21 They(Y) forced a man coming in from the country, who was passing by, to carry Jesus’s cross.(Z) He was Simon of Cyrene,(AA) the father of Alexander and Rufus.(AB)

22 They(AC) brought Jesus to the place called Golgotha (which means Place of the Skull(AD)). 23 They tried to give him wine(AE) mixed with myrrh,(AF) but he did not take it.

24 Then they crucified him and divided his clothes, casting lots(AG) for them to decide what each would get. 25 Now it was nine in the morning[a] when they crucified him. 26 The inscription of the charge written against him was: The King(AH) of the Jews.(AI) 27 They(AJ) crucified two criminals[b](AK) with him, one on his right and one on his left.[c]

29 Those(AL) who passed by were yelling insults(AM) at[d] him, shaking their heads,(AN) and saying, “Ha! The one who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days,(AO) 30 save yourself by coming down from the cross!”(AP) 31 In the same way, the chief priests with the scribes(AQ) were mocking him among themselves and saying, “He saved others, but he cannot save himself! 32 Let the Messiah,(AR) the King(AS) of Israel,(AT) come down now from the cross,(AU) so that we may see and believe.”(AV) Even those who were crucified with him taunted him.

The Death of Jesus

33 When(AW) it was noon,[e] darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon.[f](AX) 34 And at three Jesus cried out with a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lemá sabachtháni?” which is translated, “My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?”[g](AY)

35 When some of those standing there heard this, they said, “See, he’s calling for Elijah.”

36 Someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, fixed it on a stick, offered him a drink,(AZ) and said, “Let’s see if Elijah comes to take him down.”

37 Jesus let out a loud cry and breathed his last. 38 Then the curtain(BA) of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. 39 When the centurion, who was standing opposite him, saw the way he[h] breathed his last, he said, “Truly this man was the Son of God!”[i](BB)

40 There(BC) were also women watching from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene,(BD) Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome. 41 In Galilee(BE) these women followed him and took care of him. Many other women had come up with him to Jerusalem.(BF)

The Burial of Jesus

42 When(BG) it was already evening, because it was the day of preparation (that is, the day before the Sabbath), 43 Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent member of the Sanhedrin who was himself looking forward(BH) to the kingdom of God,(BI) came and boldly went to Pilate(BJ) and asked for Jesus’s body.(BK) 44 Pilate was surprised that he was already dead. Summoning the centurion, he asked him whether he had already died. 45 When he found out from the centurion, he gave the corpse to Joseph. 46 After he bought some linen cloth, Joseph took him down and wrapped him in the linen. Then he laid him in a tomb(BL) cut out of the rock and rolled a stone(BM) against the entrance to the tomb. 47 Mary Magdalene(BN) and Mary the mother of Joses were watching where he was laid.

Thank you.

14 That night all the members of the community raised their voices and wept aloud.(A) All the Israelites grumbled(B) against Moses and Aaron, and the whole assembly said to them, “If only we had died in Egypt!(C) Or in this wilderness!(D) Why is the Lord bringing us to this land only to let us fall by the sword?(E) Our wives and children(F) will be taken as plunder.(G) Wouldn’t it be better for us to go back to Egypt?(H) And they said to each other, “We should choose a leader and go back to Egypt.(I)

Then Moses and Aaron fell facedown(J) in front of the whole Israelite assembly(K) gathered there. Joshua son of Nun(L) and Caleb son of Jephunneh, who were among those who had explored the land, tore their clothes(M) and said to the entire Israelite assembly, “The land we passed through and explored is exceedingly good.(N) If the Lord is pleased with us,(O) he will lead us into that land, a land flowing with milk and honey,(P) and will give it to us.(Q) Only do not rebel(R) against the Lord. And do not be afraid(S) of the people of the land,(T) because we will devour them. Their protection is gone, but the Lord is with(U) us.(V) Do not be afraid of them.”(W)

10 But the whole assembly talked about stoning(X) them. Then the glory of the Lord(Y) appeared at the tent of meeting to all the Israelites. 11 The Lord said to Moses, “How long will these people treat me with contempt?(Z) How long will they refuse to believe in me,(AA) in spite of all the signs(AB) I have performed among them? 12 I will strike them down with a plague(AC) and destroy them, but I will make you into a nation(AD) greater and stronger than they.”(AE)

13 Moses said to the Lord, “Then the Egyptians will hear about it! By your power you brought these people up from among them.(AF) 14 And they will tell the inhabitants of this land about it. They have already heard(AG) that you, Lord, are with these people(AH) and that you, Lord, have been seen face to face,(AI) that your cloud stays over them,(AJ) and that you go before them in a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night.(AK) 15 If you put all these people to death, leaving none alive, the nations who have heard this report about you will say, 16 ‘The Lord was not able to bring these people into the land he promised them on oath,(AL) so he slaughtered them in the wilderness.’(AM)

17 “Now may the Lord’s strength be displayed, just as you have declared: 18 ‘The Lord is slow to anger, abounding in love and forgiving sin and rebellion.(AN) Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation.’(AO) 19 In accordance with your great love, forgive(AP) the sin of these people,(AQ) just as you have pardoned them from the time they left Egypt until now.”(AR)

20 The Lord replied, “I have forgiven them,(AS) as you asked. 21 Nevertheless, as surely as I live(AT) and as surely as the glory of the Lord(AU) fills the whole earth,(AV) 22 not one of those who saw my glory and the signs(AW) I performed in Egypt and in the wilderness but who disobeyed me and tested me ten times(AX) 23 not one of them will ever see the land I promised on oath(AY) to their ancestors. No one who has treated me with contempt(AZ) will ever see it.(BA) 24 But because my servant Caleb(BB) has a different spirit and follows me wholeheartedly,(BC) I will bring him into the land he went to, and his descendants will inherit it.(BD) 25 Since the Amalekites(BE) and the Canaanites(BF) are living in the valleys, turn(BG) back tomorrow and set out toward the desert along the route to the Red Sea.[a](BH)

26 The Lord said to Moses and Aaron: 27 “How long will this wicked community grumble against me? I have heard the complaints of these grumbling Israelites.(BI) 28 So tell them, ‘As surely as I live,(BJ) declares the Lord, I will do to you(BK) the very thing I heard you say: 29 In this wilderness your bodies will fall(BL)—every one of you twenty years old or more(BM) who was counted in the census(BN) and who has grumbled against me. 30 Not one of you will enter the land(BO) I swore with uplifted hand(BP) to make your home, except Caleb son of Jephunneh(BQ) and Joshua son of Nun.(BR) 31 As for your children that you said would be taken as plunder, I will bring them in to enjoy the land you have rejected.(BS) 32 But as for you, your bodies will fall(BT) in this wilderness. 33 Your children will be shepherds here for forty years,(BU) suffering for your unfaithfulness, until the last of your bodies lies in the wilderness. 34 For forty years(BV)—one year for each of the forty days you explored the land(BW)—you will suffer for your sins and know what it is like to have me against you.’ 35 I, the Lord, have spoken, and I will surely do these things(BX) to this whole wicked community, which has banded together against me. They will meet their end in this wilderness; here they will die.(BY)

36 So the men Moses had sent(BZ) to explore the land, who returned and made the whole community grumble(CA) against him by spreading a bad report(CB) about it— 37 these men who were responsible for spreading the bad report(CC) about the land were struck down and died of a plague(CD) before the Lord. 38 Of the men who went to explore the land,(CE) only Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh survived.(CF)

39 When Moses reported this(CG) to all the Israelites, they mourned(CH) bitterly. 40 Early the next morning they set out for the highest point in the hill country,(CI) saying, “Now we are ready to go up to the land the Lord promised. Surely we have sinned!(CJ)

41 But Moses said, “Why are you disobeying the Lord’s command? This will not succeed!(CK) 42 Do not go up, because the Lord is not with you. You will be defeated by your enemies,(CL) 43 for the Amalekites(CM) and the Canaanites(CN) will face you there. Because you have turned away from the Lord, he will not be with you(CO) and you will fall by the sword.”

44 Nevertheless, in their presumption they went up(CP) toward the highest point in the hill country, though neither Moses nor the ark of the Lord’s covenant moved from the camp.(CQ) 45 Then the Amalekites and the Canaanites(CR) who lived in that hill country(CS) came down and attacked them and beat them down all the way to Hormah.(CT)

Supplementary Offerings

15 The Lord said to Moses, “Speak to the Israelites and say to them: ‘After you enter the land I am giving you(CU) as a home and you present to the Lord food offerings from the herd or the flock,(CV) as an aroma pleasing to the Lord(CW)—whether burnt offerings(CX) or sacrifices, for special vows or freewill offerings(CY) or festival offerings(CZ) then the person who brings an offering shall present to the Lord a grain offering(DA) of a tenth of an ephah[b] of the finest flour(DB) mixed with a quarter of a hin[c] of olive oil. With each lamb(DC) for the burnt offering or the sacrifice, prepare a quarter of a hin of wine(DD) as a drink offering.(DE)

“‘With a ram(DF) prepare a grain offering(DG) of two-tenths of an ephah[d](DH) of the finest flour mixed with a third of a hin[e] of olive oil,(DI) and a third of a hin of wine(DJ) as a drink offering.(DK) Offer it as an aroma pleasing to the Lord.(DL)

“‘When you prepare a young bull(DM) as a burnt offering or sacrifice, for a special vow(DN) or a fellowship offering(DO) to the Lord, bring with the bull a grain offering(DP) of three-tenths of an ephah[f](DQ) of the finest flour mixed with half a hin[g] of olive oil, 10 and also bring half a hin of wine(DR) as a drink offering.(DS) This will be a food offering, an aroma pleasing to the Lord.(DT) 11 Each bull or ram, each lamb or young goat, is to be prepared in this manner. 12 Do this for each one, for as many as you prepare.(DU)

13 “‘Everyone who is native-born(DV) must do these things in this way when they present a food offering as an aroma pleasing to the Lord.(DW) 14 For the generations to come,(DX) whenever a foreigner(DY) or anyone else living among you presents a food(DZ) offering(EA) as an aroma pleasing to the Lord, they must do exactly as you do. 15 The community is to have the same rules for you and for the foreigner residing among you; this is a lasting ordinance for the generations to come.(EB) You and the foreigner shall be the same before the Lord: 16 The same laws and regulations will apply both to you and to the foreigner residing among you.(EC)’”

Mark 14:53-72

Jesus Before the Sanhedrin(A)(B)

53 They took Jesus to the high priest, and all the chief priests, the elders and the teachers of the law came together. 54 Peter followed him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest.(C) There he sat with the guards and warmed himself at the fire.(D)

55 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin(E) were looking for evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death, but they did not find any. 56 Many testified falsely against him, but their statements did not agree.

57 Then some stood up and gave this false testimony against him: 58 “We heard him say, ‘I will destroy this temple made with human hands and in three days will build another,(F) not made with hands.’” 59 Yet even then their testimony did not agree.

60 Then the high priest stood up before them and asked Jesus, “Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?” 61 But Jesus remained silent and gave no answer.(G)

Again the high priest asked him, “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?”(H)

62 “I am,” said Jesus. “And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.”(I)

63 The high priest tore his clothes.(J) “Why do we need any more witnesses?” he asked. 64 “You have heard the blasphemy. What do you think?”

They all condemned him as worthy of death.(K) 65 Then some began to spit at him; they blindfolded him, struck him with their fists, and said, “Prophesy!” And the guards took him and beat him.(L)

Peter Disowns Jesus(M)

66 While Peter was below in the courtyard,(N) one of the servant girls of the high priest came by. 67 When she saw Peter warming himself,(O) she looked closely at him.

“You also were with that Nazarene, Jesus,”(P) she said.

68 But he denied it. “I don’t know or understand what you’re talking about,”(Q) he said, and went out into the entryway.[a]

69 When the servant girl saw him there, she said again to those standing around, “This fellow is one of them.” 70 Again he denied it.(R)

After a little while, those standing near said to Peter, “Surely you are one of them, for you are a Galilean.”(S)

71 He began to call down curses, and he swore to them, “I don’t know this man you’re talking about.”(T)

72 Immediately the rooster crowed the second time.[b] Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows twice[c] you will disown me three times.”(U) And he broke down and wept.

Psalm 53

Psalm 53[a](A)

For the director of music. According to mahalath.[b] A maskil[c] of David.

The fool(B) says in his heart,
“There is no God.”(C)
They are corrupt, and their ways are vile;
there is no one who does good.

God looks down from heaven(D)
on all mankind
to see if there are any who understand,(E)
any who seek God.(F)
Everyone has turned away, all have become corrupt;
there is no one who does good,
not even one.(G)

Do all these evildoers know nothing?

They devour my people as though eating bread;
they never call on God.
But there they are, overwhelmed with dread,
where there was nothing to dread.(H)
God scattered the bones(I) of those who attacked you;(J)
you put them to shame,(K) for God despised them.(L)

Oh, that salvation for Israel would come out of Zion!
When God restores his people,
let Jacob rejoice and Israel be glad!

Numbers 11:24-13:33, Mark 14:22-52, Psalms 52:1-9, Proverbs 11:1-3

Today is March 9th. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian. It’s great to be here with you today and every day as we continue to step forward. And now look at us, we’re in the third month of the year already and approaching the middle of that month. I guess I don’t want to get ahead of ourselves, but step-by-step, day by day, we’re making our way well into the Scriptures. And, so we’ll take the next step forward. We’re reading from the New International Version this week. And we’ll step back out into the desert with the children of Israel as they are being formed and shaped by the desert and by God’s provision in the desert. Numbers chapter 11 verse 24 through 13 verse 33 today.

Commentary:

Okay. So, in the book of Mark we’re moving toward Jesus passion, right? The crucifixion. And, you know, this is the right time of year to be contemplating this, deeply, as we move toward Easter. So, what we see today is Jesus in the garden of Gethsemane. Man, it was just, you know, a few days ago we were in the garden of Gethsemane in person. And Gethsemane is on the Mount of olives. The Mount of Olives is a big hill that’s just outside the old city of Jerusalem. So, there’s a valley between the Mount of Olives in the in the old city and that’s called the Kedron Valley. And, so, Jesus would’ve crossed across the Kedron Valley and up into the groves of olives to pray. And it’s here that we see Jesus humanity on display so clearly because He knows what’s in front of Him. And that is not that is not easy to contemplate. I mean, it’s not easy for us to contemplate what He went through on our behalf. So, if we put ourselves in His shoes, imagine how exponentially greater the torture in mind and spirit would be to understand what’s about to happen to you physically. And, so, as Jesus is contemplating what’s in front of Him, what does He do? He goes to His Father. He’s talking with His Father. And even Jesus is saying, is there any other way, is there any other way to get this done? Everything is possible for You. Take this cup from me. Yet, it’s not my will, I’m submitting to yours. But we’ve with prayed prayers like that. Everything is possible for You. Can You make this go away? Can You find another way? We’ve prayed these prayers. It’s important that we can see Jesus in the same circumstance. He’s praying the same kind of prayer and He keeps going back to His close friends who keep falling asleep, right? So, he’s with the Father and He’s crying out to the Father and then He’s going back to His friends for, maybe, some support and they’re sleeping and Jesus says something very, very interesting, something that He’s experiencing, something that should give us an awareness that God truly does understand the things that we go through. Because He comes back and wakes up His friends, shakes Peter awake and says, couldn’t you keep watch for one hour? Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak. So,, this is something that Jesus…those are the words of Jesus. So, this is something that He is acknowledging and something that He is even sensing and feeling in this moment. The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak. We could all say that. And rather than bashing us in the Scriptures for like, you know, you’ve got to get your act together, Jesus is acknowledging that’s true. The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak. So, what is the antidote there? What is the equalizer? It’s what Jesus said just before that. Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak. This is exactly what we were talking about just a couple of days ago - vigilance from deception. How does temptation even have its way with us if we are not first seduced? The thing that we’re about to give ourselves to is going to bring us life. We’re going to exchange ourselves for something that’s going to bring us life. It’s deception. So, Jesus is saying watch. That’s what He said when we were talking about this. Watch, be vigilant, and pray. Communicate, stay in fellowship with God. This is the only way to navigate life without getting taken out by deception, temptation, and a great fall. The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak. And what we see in the Scriptures from Mark today is that Jesus walked through that. He understands that. He knows what we go through and it will be our vigilance and a close conversational relationship with God that will be necessary in order for us to successfully navigate the things that we face. But it will be vigilance and a close conversational relationship with God that will be the only thing that helps us successfully navigate through the rest of our lives. So, even at this agonizing hour of mental and spiritual torment for Jesus He is still giving us wisdom. He is still modeling for us what our lives can be.

Prayer:

And, so, Jesus, as you well know, the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak at times. And we confess that watching and praying isn’t usually what we do in the moments of temptation. We’re already too far gone. However, being vigilant over our hearts, knowing that this is the wellspring of our lives, in a close, intimate friendship fellowship with You, we acknowledge this is how You successfully navigated things that we will never have to go through, and this is a model for how it is that we navigate in advance and stay vigilant in advance before these things can take us out. So, as we continue through this season of contemplating the order of our lives, opening ourselves to Your Holy Spirit to re-order our lives and even reinterpret our lives, we realign ourselves with You. We watch, we become vigilant, we become very, very aware of Your Holy Spirit’s work in our lives. We ask You, rescue us, come for us. Father love You. We worship You. We trust You. We open our mind to You. We open our heart to You. We give our bodies to You. Come, Holy Spirit. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hello fellow DABbers. This is Joanne Marie. Today is March 5th and I’d like to say thank you to Jill for filling in today. You did a great job. A word of encouragement from Psalm 138. I’m changing the pronouns from I and me to us and we. And hopefully I will get a correct this time. We will praise You oh Lord with all our heart before the gods we will sing Your praise. We will bow toward Your holy temple and will praise Your name for Your love and Your faithfulness for You are exalted above all things, Your name and Your word. When we called You answered us, You made us bold and stouthearted. May all the kings of the earth praise You oh Lord and __ You the words of their mouth. Though they are saying the ways of the Lord for the glory of the Lord is great. Though the Lord is on high, He looks upon the lowly, but the proud He knows from afar. Though we walk in the midst of trouble You preserve our life. You stretch out Your hand against the anger of our foes, with Your right hand You save us. The Lord will fulfill His purpose for us. Your love the Lord endures forever. Do not abandon the works of Your hand. And again, that was Psalm 138. Have a fabulous day everyone. God bless You. Chow.

Hi. I am Elizabeth. I live just 30 miles from the Canadian border. And Nora, you called and gave a message March 5th that you’re a brand-new Christian of just three weeks and you were afraid that if you sinned or something that God will leave you. I have some Scripture for you if you could write them down. If you should sin swear whatever you are afraid Jesus would leave you. If you go to 1 John 1:9, Jesus is an advocate to the Father because it says, if you forgive your sins, if you live faithful and right He’ll forgive you from all unrighteousness. And in Hebrews 13:5 He said He would never leave you nor forsake you. In Romans 8:31-39, there’s nothing that can ever separate you from the love of God. The only way that God would ever leave you is if you left Him because He’ll never leave you. The Holy Spirit will always be with you and will continue to help you to grow in your Christian life. I’m so happy for you and God bless you. Don’t ever fear, God will never leave you. Just remember 1 John 1:9. God bless you and may you have a wonderful journey. And thank you for this podcast. It is such a blessing. This is my second year. My name is Elizabeth. God bless.

Family, it’s Redeemed in Him from Virginia and I am calling because I heard Nora’s call, I think your name was Nora from Canada. You’re a new believer and I just wanted to tell you how happy I was to hear your tears of joy and peace. And I know that you were worried and asking that if you do something wrong will Jesus leave you. And the answer is no. Jesus will never leave you and He will never forsake you. He will never turn you away. Even when we’ve sinned there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. So, as a believer that’s you, that’s you and me. I just wanted to encourage you to read John 17 because this is Jesus prayer for us. And also, Romans 5 because, actually the whole book of Romans, but Romans 5 really just helps me grow in the Lord. And Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to guide you and that consciousness within us that calls things in or out. So, if you feel you’re doing something wrong then just ask God immediately to forgive you and try to stop whatever it is. And even if you can’t just ask Jesus to rescue you from it and help you with and he will.

Hello Jordan, this is Ruth calling from Arkansas. Jordan the prodigal. I don’t want to call you the prodigal Jordan because I call you Jordan the redeemed and I want to read these words to this song called Redeemed How I Love to Proclaim It. Redeemed by the blood of the lamb. See you’ve been redeemed by the blood of the Lamb, redeemed through His infinite mercy. He had mercy on you as well is me His child and forever I am. And the chorus goes, redeemed, redeemed, redeemed by the blood of the Lamb redeemed, redeemed, redeemed His child and forever I am. You are his child. Everything you’ve done in the past He has forgiven you. It’s all of the blood of Jesus. So, don’t call yourself John the prodigal. Don’t call yourself John the prodigal, call yourself John the redeemed. He redeemed us. And Easter’s coming soon and the celebration of Jesus rising from the dead, from the coffin, laid in the grave for three days and He rose from the coffin. He lives, He lives, He lives, He lives in our heart. He doesn’t live in a sinner’s heart. He lives in our heart the ones who are redeemed. All have sinned and come short of the glory of God. We’ve all been sinners but we’re not sinners in anymore. We are called the redeemed. Let the redeemed of the Lord say so. Say so. I’m redeemed by the blood of the Lamb and so are you. I love you John. Now remember you’re not John prodigal any longer. Okay. This is Ruth calling from Arkansas. And I will be checking on you again soon. In the meantime, I’m praying for you. Love you.

Hello. Good morning Daily Audio Bible family. This is Jay calling from New Jersey. I just wanted to call today to be transparent, to be truthful, to be honest, to be clear. Last night I had a revelation. And it wasn’t anything profound. It wasn’t anything like God came and spoke to me, you know, like there was an angel in my room or anything like that, but what it was was a new understanding of what it means to follow Christ. See in the past I thought that following Christ was a delicate balance of going to church and pretending that you read the Bible and knowing how to have a debate with somebody who wasn’t Christian or even a Christian whose theology was not systematic, as Jill said today. You know, and my revelation last night was following Christ is not about following rules or putting on a show or being the best prayer or even doing the most in the kingdom of God. What it’s about is being obedient to the things of God. Being obedient to the teachings of Christ. Being obedient to the Holy Spirit. Being obedient to the word of God. Now, I admit this is a difficult thing to do because I sit here and I constantly beat myself up and get in really, really, really deep depressing moods over the fact that I was not a very good person, but the word of God tells us that Jesus said it himself, no man is good…

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Friday March 9, 2018 (NIV)

Numbers 11:24-13:33

24 So Moses went out and told the people what the Lord had said. He brought together seventy of their elders and had them stand around the tent. 25 Then the Lord came down in the cloud(A) and spoke with him,(B) and he took some of the power of the Spirit(C) that was on him and put it on the seventy elders.(D) When the Spirit rested on them, they prophesied(E)—but did not do so again.

26 However, two men, whose names were Eldad and Medad, had remained in the camp. They were listed among the elders, but did not go out to the tent. Yet the Spirit also rested on them,(F) and they prophesied in the camp. 27 A young man ran and told Moses, “Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp.”

28 Joshua son of Nun,(G) who had been Moses’ aide(H) since youth, spoke up and said, “Moses, my lord, stop them!”(I)

29 But Moses replied, “Are you jealous for my sake? I wish that all the Lord’s people were prophets(J) and that the Lord would put his Spirit(K) on them!”(L) 30 Then Moses and the elders of Israel returned to the camp.

31 Now a wind went out from the Lord and drove quail(M) in from the sea. It scattered them up to two cubits[a] deep all around the camp, as far as a day’s walk in any direction. 32 All that day and night and all the next day the people went out and gathered quail. No one gathered less than ten homers.[b] Then they spread them out all around the camp. 33 But while the meat was still between their teeth(N) and before it could be consumed, the anger(O) of the Lord burned against the people, and he struck them with a severe plague.(P) 34 Therefore the place was named Kibroth Hattaavah,[c](Q) because there they buried the people who had craved other food.

35 From Kibroth Hattaavah the people traveled to Hazeroth(R) and stayed there.

Miriam and Aaron Oppose Moses

12 Miriam(S) and Aaron began to talk against Moses because of his Cushite wife,(T) for he had married a Cushite. “Has the Lord spoken only through Moses?” they asked. “Hasn’t he also spoken through us?”(U) And the Lord heard this.(V)

(Now Moses was a very humble man,(W) more humble than anyone else on the face of the earth.)

At once the Lord said to Moses, Aaron and Miriam, “Come out to the tent of meeting, all three of you.” So the three of them went out. Then the Lord came down in a pillar of cloud;(X) he stood at the entrance to the tent and summoned Aaron and Miriam. When the two of them stepped forward, he said, “Listen to my words:

“When there is a prophet among you,
I, the Lord, reveal(Y) myself to them in visions,(Z)
I speak to them in dreams.(AA)
But this is not true of my servant Moses;(AB)
he is faithful in all my house.(AC)
With him I speak face to face,
clearly and not in riddles;(AD)
he sees the form of the Lord.(AE)
Why then were you not afraid
to speak against my servant Moses?”(AF)

The anger of the Lord burned against them,(AG) and he left them.(AH)

10 When the cloud lifted from above the tent,(AI) Miriam’s skin was leprous[d]—it became as white as snow.(AJ) Aaron turned toward her and saw that she had a defiling skin disease,(AK) 11 and he said to Moses, “Please, my lord, I ask you not to hold against us the sin we have so foolishly committed.(AL) 12 Do not let her be like a stillborn infant coming from its mother’s womb with its flesh half eaten away.”

13 So Moses cried out to the Lord, “Please, God, heal her!(AM)

14 The Lord replied to Moses, “If her father had spit in her face,(AN) would she not have been in disgrace for seven days? Confine her outside the camp(AO) for seven days; after that she can be brought back.” 15 So Miriam was confined outside the camp(AP) for seven days,(AQ) and the people did not move on till she was brought back.

16 After that, the people left Hazeroth(AR) and encamped in the Desert of Paran.(AS)

Exploring Canaan

13 The Lord said to Moses, “Send some men to explore(AT) the land of Canaan,(AU) which I am giving to the Israelites.(AV) From each ancestral tribe(AW) send one of its leaders.”

So at the Lord’s command Moses sent them out from the Desert of Paran. All of them were leaders of the Israelites.(AX) These are their names:

from the tribe of Reuben, Shammua son of Zakkur;

from the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat son of Hori;

from the tribe of Judah, Caleb son of Jephunneh;(AY)

from the tribe of Issachar, Igal son of Joseph;

from the tribe of Ephraim, Hoshea son of Nun;(AZ)

from the tribe of Benjamin, Palti son of Raphu;

10 from the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel son of Sodi;

11 from the tribe of Manasseh (a tribe of Joseph), Gaddi son of Susi;

12 from the tribe of Dan, Ammiel son of Gemalli;

13 from the tribe of Asher, Sethur son of Michael;

14 from the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi son of Vophsi;

15 from the tribe of Gad, Geuel son of Maki.

16 These are the names of the men Moses sent to explore(BA) the land. (Moses gave Hoshea son of Nun(BB) the name Joshua.)(BC)

17 When Moses sent them to explore Canaan,(BD) he said, “Go up through the Negev(BE) and on into the hill country.(BF) 18 See what the land is like and whether the people who live there are strong or weak, few or many. 19 What kind of land do they live in? Is it good or bad? What kind of towns do they live in? Are they unwalled or fortified? 20 How is the soil? Is it fertile or poor? Are there trees in it or not? Do your best to bring back some of the fruit of the land.(BG)” (It was the season for the first ripe grapes.)(BH)

21 So they went up and explored the land from the Desert of Zin(BI) as far as Rehob,(BJ) toward Lebo Hamath.(BK) 22 They went up through the Negev and came to Hebron,(BL) where Ahiman, Sheshai and Talmai,(BM) the descendants of Anak,(BN) lived. (Hebron had been built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.)(BO) 23 When they reached the Valley of Eshkol,[e](BP) they cut off a branch bearing a single cluster of grapes. Two of them carried it on a pole between them, along with some pomegranates(BQ) and figs.(BR) 24 That place was called the Valley of Eshkol because of the cluster of grapes the Israelites cut off there. 25 At the end of forty days(BS) they returned from exploring the land.(BT)

Report on the Exploration

26 They came back to Moses and Aaron and the whole Israelite community at Kadesh(BU) in the Desert of Paran.(BV) There they reported to them(BW) and to the whole assembly and showed them the fruit of the land.(BX) 27 They gave Moses this account: “We went into the land to which you sent us, and it does flow with milk and honey!(BY) Here is its fruit.(BZ) 28 But the people who live there are powerful, and the cities are fortified and very large.(CA) We even saw descendants of Anak(CB) there.(CC) 29 The Amalekites(CD) live in the Negev; the Hittites,(CE) Jebusites(CF) and Amorites(CG) live in the hill country;(CH) and the Canaanites(CI) live near the sea and along the Jordan.(CJ)

30 Then Caleb(CK) silenced the people before Moses and said, “We should go up and take possession of the land, for we can certainly do it.”

31 But the men who had gone up with him said, “We can’t attack those people; they are stronger than we are.”(CL) 32 And they spread among the Israelites a bad report(CM) about the land they had explored. They said, “The land we explored devours(CN) those living in it. All the people we saw there are of great size.(CO) 33 We saw the Nephilim(CP) there (the descendants of Anak(CQ) come from the Nephilim). We seemed like grasshoppers(CR) in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them.”

Mark 14:22-52

22 While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it(A) and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take it; this is my body.”

23 Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and they all drank from it.(B)

24 “This is my blood of the[a] covenant,(C) which is poured out for many,” he said to them. 25 “Truly I tell you, I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”(D)

26 When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.(E)

Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial(F)

27 “You will all fall away,” Jesus told them, “for it is written:

“‘I will strike the shepherd,
and the sheep will be scattered.’[b](G)

28 But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.”(H)

29 Peter declared, “Even if all fall away, I will not.”

30 “Truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “today—yes, tonight—before the rooster crows twice[c] you yourself will disown me three times.”(I)

31 But Peter insisted emphatically, “Even if I have to die with you,(J) I will never disown you.” And all the others said the same.

Gethsemane(K)

32 They went to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” 33 He took Peter, James and John(L) along with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled. 34 “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death,”(M) he said to them. “Stay here and keep watch.”

35 Going a little farther, he fell to the ground and prayed that if possible the hour(N) might pass from him. 36 “Abba,[d] Father,”(O) he said, “everything is possible for you. Take this cup(P) from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.”(Q)

37 Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Simon,” he said to Peter, “are you asleep? Couldn’t you keep watch for one hour? 38 Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.(R) The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”(S)

39 Once more he went away and prayed the same thing. 40 When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. They did not know what to say to him.

41 Returning the third time, he said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The hour(T) has come. Look, the Son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners. 42 Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!”

Jesus Arrested(U)

43 Just as he was speaking, Judas,(V) one of the Twelve, appeared. With him was a crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests, the teachers of the law, and the elders.

44 Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The one I kiss is the man; arrest him and lead him away under guard.” 45 Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, “Rabbi!”(W) and kissed him. 46 The men seized Jesus and arrested him. 47 Then one of those standing near drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.

48 “Am I leading a rebellion,” said Jesus, “that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? 49 Every day I was with you, teaching in the temple courts,(X) and you did not arrest me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled.”(Y) 50 Then everyone deserted him and fled.(Z)

51 A young man, wearing nothing but a linen garment, was following Jesus. When they seized him, 52 he fled naked, leaving his garment behind.

Psalm 52

Psalm 52[a]

For the director of music. A maskil[b] of David. When Doeg the Edomite(A) had gone to Saul and told him: “David has gone to the house of Ahimelek.”

Why do you boast of evil, you mighty hero?
Why do you boast(B) all day long,(C)
you who are a disgrace in the eyes of God?
You who practice deceit,(D)
your tongue plots destruction;(E)
it is like a sharpened razor.(F)
You love evil(G) rather than good,
falsehood(H) rather than speaking the truth.[c]
You love every harmful word,
you deceitful tongue!(I)

Surely God will bring you down to everlasting ruin:
He will snatch you up and pluck(J) you from your tent;
he will uproot(K) you from the land of the living.(L)
The righteous will see and fear;
they will laugh(M) at you, saying,
“Here now is the man
who did not make God his stronghold(N)
but trusted in his great wealth(O)
and grew strong by destroying others!”

But I am like an olive tree(P)
flourishing in the house of God;
I trust(Q) in God’s unfailing love
for ever and ever.
For what you have done I will always praise you(R)
in the presence of your faithful people.(S)
And I will hope in your name,(T)
for your name is good.(U)

Numbers 10:1-11:23, Mark 14:1-21, Psalms 51:1-19, Proverbs 10:31-32

Today is the 8th day of March. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian. It is wonderful to be here with you today and every day for that matter. It’s great to get together around the global campfire in community where the word of God is burning bright, spilling out into our lives and through our lives and into the world as we infect the world with light and life and good news and then come back around the global campfire to get recharged so that we can do it again. It’s great to be here with you today. So, we’ll take the next step forward and we’ll do that by picking up where we left off yesterday. Today from the New International Version numbers chapter 10 verse 1 through 11 verse 23.

Commentary:

Alright. So, what we’ve got going on pretty much across the board is pretty intense in our reading today. Alright. So, the people are grumbling and talking about how they got to eat meat for free back when they were slaves. And the Lord is a bit exasperated. Kind of like, are you kidding me? What else do I have to do to get the stink of slavery off of you people? Kind of a good question to be asking ourselves, right? And then in the New Testament in the gospel of Mark we’re moving into Jerusalem now where Jesus is having the last meal he’s going to enjoy as a free person. This is pretty much the last moment of calm and serenity in his earthly life. And it’s pretty much true for the rest of them, of the 12. So, it’s a beautiful picture, especially as we’re in this season of Lent, of contemplating what it cost to give us the gift of eternal life and life with God now, a restored humanity, where the divine, where God and humans are in fellowship and covenant with one another. That came at a great cost. I mean, you have to imagine sending your firstborn to die. Right? Just…because you can’t even imagine…like you can’t even fathom that…and it would just shatter you inside. Right? You’d have to love something even more. You’d have to think that it would be worth it. Then you then you finally put yourself in God’s position, about how he feels about you. That’s pretty intense. And that’s what this season is all about. And then we get to the Psalm today. Right? This is Psalm 51 and I encourage you to go back on your own and read it and kind of chew on it and meditate on it because it so deeply represents the season that we’re in as we move toward Easter. It so deeply represents that because David has just done some pretty horrible stuff and then try to cover it all up and we’ll get to that story soon enough. And it’s not just that he had an affair. There was a lot more going on. So, it’s pretty horrible. And he’s in this place of utter lament, really, really sitting with what he’s done and the repercussions. And, so, I encourage you to go back, just wind back and listen to it again or look it up for yourself and spend some time in contemplation.

Prayer:

Father, we pray. Have mercy on us, oh God according to Your unfailing love. According to Your great compassion, blot out our transgressions. Wash away all our iniquities. Cleanse us from our sins. Wash us and we will be whiter than snow. Create in us a pure heart oh God. Renew a steadfast spirit within us. Restore to us the joy of our salvation and grant us a willing spirit to sustain us. We ask in Jesus name. Amen.

Good morning Daily Audio Bible this is Sandy in New Hampshire. Today is Monday the 5th of March and I am calling to reach out to Nora from Canada. Hi, welcome to the family! If you could see me Nora, I have a big smile on my face. I am so thankful that you had the courage to call. I can’t imagine the strength that it took to make that phone call. I want you to know that you are on my heart and I’m praying for you today. God said in his word, and you’ll find it. It said, I will never leave you or forsake you. God is never going to leave you He’s never going to forsake you. It’s by grace through faith through Jesus Christ that we are saved and not by anything we can do or our works. So, no one can boast. And the Holy Spirit is the one who helps us in all our moments of weakness. He reveals how we need to change. And I just want you to know that you are loved by all. I am praying for God to give you confidence day by day to know that God loves you and He wants to reveal Himself to you and I’m praying for you Nora. God bless you. This is Sandy in New Hampshire.

Hi family this is Mary from the UK. First of all, I want to give you a praise report. So, I rang in a few weeks ago asking you to pray for a couple at our church where they happen to have long-standing problems with pornography addiction. And just it got increasingly out of control. So, a great praise report. He has been along to counseling and today, Monday the 5th of March he’s going up to something called Lennington to go for a five-day residential course to deal with his pornography addiction. So, praise the Lord that they’ve made that progress. His wife talked to me yesterday and I’ve encouraged her to go to counseling support herself. Lord, please could You just help this couple. And Lord, there’s couples all over the world who are really struggling with the impacts of this type of addiction. Lord, help them know that You are sovereign. And then on a totally different matter, in the UK we’ve had some really big snowstorms. Things are improving but there are still people who are cut off from __ and are burning their furniture for fuel. So, please pray for safety and __ resolution of this cold weather that we haven’t got the equipment to deal with. Thank you, family. Love you. Bye.

Hi yeah, this is Joey from Missouri. Hi Daily Audio Bible community. It is 3:32 PM here on a B E A, beautiful Monday, Monday afternoon. I just want to pray for my mom Sharon E. She…my mom and dad got married in 1981 and they had been struggling for years and years and years and they finally got a divorce in 2010, the same year I graduated high school, which was very discouraging. And altogether there’s four of us. I’m the youngest, born in 91. So, my mom, she’s suffering from depression and she feels that everybody’s out to get her all the time and it’s kind of like walking on egg shells type feeling around her sometimes, but she led me to Christ at five years old. She’s been the spiritual leader of our household, no doubt. So, I just pray that you guys pray for me and my mom. Her name is Sharon E. And just relief for these demons away from her, demons of fear and __. And in Jesus name. Thank you. Love you all so very much. Okay. Bye for now.

All is well, I am Daniel. We are blessed indeed. I pray this moment with all of family in Christ who listen and all who do not. Pray with me. Thank You, Father that we can hear You’re still small voice clearly as the child of the most high God we are. Thank You Father for the wonders that shall not cease this day You have made for the apple of Your eye, the one-of-a-kind masterpiece each one of us are that are made by Your hand and in Your image. Thank You Father for the choice You have given us to receive what You have already spoken in Your living word. This day and every moment we ask You to be in with us. Thank You Father that we remember Your overflowing and abundant good that we bring forward with us and give You praise for today. Thank You Father for what You have already given us today that we choose to receive. Thank You Father in advance for the blessings with our names on them You have in store for us all of the long days You promise us. Father we ask You boldly for the blessings You have in store with our names on them that were our ancestors who chose not to receive them and I thank You in advance for them. Thank You Father for making our enemies our footstool as we choose to be still and at peace knowing You’re in control and on the throne and in first place. Thank You Father for Your son Jesus Christ who is victor over death and hell, who put the accuser under our feet and made zero. Thank You Father for Your heavy favor like shields around us and Your hedge of protection surrounding us. We choose to seek You in all ways and in every moment on the paths You have made best for us moving forward with You and in Your image, choosing to be the blessing and miracle You prepare us to be for Your purpose, to glorify Your name and further Your kingdom.

Numbers 10:1-11:23

The Silver Trumpets

10 The Lord said to Moses: “Make two trumpets(A) of hammered silver, and use them for calling the community(B) together and for having the camps set out.(C) When both are sounded, the whole community is to assemble before you at the entrance to the tent of meeting. If only one is sounded, the leaders(D)—the heads of the clans of Israel—are to assemble before you. When a trumpet blast is sounded, the tribes camping on the east are to set out.(E) At the sounding of a second blast, the camps on the south are to set out.(F) The blast will be the signal for setting out. To gather the assembly, blow the trumpets,(G) but not with the signal for setting out.(H)

“The sons of Aaron, the priests, are to blow the trumpets. This is to be a lasting ordinance for you and the generations to come.(I) When you go into battle in your own land against an enemy who is oppressing you,(J) sound a blast on the trumpets.(K) Then you will be remembered(L) by the Lord your God and rescued from your enemies.(M) 10 Also at your times of rejoicing—your appointed festivals and New Moon feasts(N)—you are to sound the trumpets(O) over your burnt offerings(P) and fellowship offerings,(Q) and they will be a memorial for you before your God. I am the Lord your God.(R)

The Israelites Leave Sinai

11 On the twentieth day of the second month of the second year,(S) the cloud lifted(T) from above the tabernacle of the covenant law.(U) 12 Then the Israelites set out from the Desert of Sinai and traveled from place to place until the cloud came to rest in the Desert of Paran.(V) 13 They set out, this first time, at the Lord’s command through Moses.(W)

14 The divisions of the camp of Judah went first, under their standard.(X) Nahshon son of Amminadab(Y) was in command. 15 Nethanel son of Zuar was over the division of the tribe(Z) of Issachar,(AA) 16 and Eliab son of Helon(AB) was over the division of the tribe of Zebulun.(AC) 17 Then the tabernacle was taken down, and the Gershonites and Merarites, who carried it, set out.(AD)

18 The divisions of the camp of Reuben(AE) went next, under their standard.(AF) Elizur son of Shedeur(AG) was in command. 19 Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai was over the division of the tribe of Simeon,(AH) 20 and Eliasaph son of Deuel was over the division of the tribe of Gad.(AI) 21 Then the Kohathites(AJ) set out, carrying the holy things.(AK) The tabernacle was to be set up before they arrived.(AL)

22 The divisions of the camp of Ephraim(AM) went next, under their standard. Elishama son of Ammihud(AN) was in command. 23 Gamaliel son of Pedahzur was over the division of the tribe of Manasseh,(AO) 24 and Abidan son of Gideoni was over the division of the tribe of Benjamin.(AP)

25 Finally, as the rear guard(AQ) for all the units, the divisions of the camp of Dan set out under their standard. Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai(AR) was in command. 26 Pagiel son of Okran was over the division of the tribe of Asher,(AS) 27 and Ahira son of Enan was over the division of the tribe of Naphtali.(AT) 28 This was the order of march for the Israelite divisions as they set out.

29 Now Moses said to Hobab(AU) son of Reuel(AV) the Midianite, Moses’ father-in-law,(AW) “We are setting out for the place about which the Lord said, ‘I will give it to you.’(AX) Come with us and we will treat you well, for the Lord has promised good things to Israel.”

30 He answered, “No, I will not go;(AY) I am going back to my own land and my own people.(AZ)

31 But Moses said, “Please do not leave us. You know where we should camp in the wilderness, and you can be our eyes.(BA) 32 If you come with us, we will share with you(BB) whatever good things the Lord gives us.(BC)

33 So they set out(BD) from the mountain of the Lord and traveled for three days. The ark of the covenant of the Lord(BE) went before them during those three days to find them a place to rest.(BF) 34 The cloud of the Lord was over them by day when they set out from the camp.(BG)

35 Whenever the ark set out, Moses said,

“Rise up,(BH) Lord!
May your enemies be scattered;(BI)
may your foes flee before you.(BJ)(BK)

36 Whenever it came to rest, he said,

“Return,(BL) Lord,
to the countless thousands of Israel.(BM)

Fire From the Lord

11 Now the people complained(BN) about their hardships in the hearing of the Lord,(BO) and when he heard them his anger was aroused.(BP) Then fire from the Lord burned among them(BQ) and consumed(BR) some of the outskirts of the camp. When the people cried out to Moses, he prayed(BS) to the Lord(BT) and the fire died down. So that place was called Taberah,[a](BU) because fire from the Lord had burned among them.(BV)

Quail From the Lord

The rabble with them began to crave other food,(BW) and again the Israelites started wailing(BX) and said, “If only we had meat to eat! We remember the fish we ate in Egypt at no cost—also the cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions and garlic.(BY) But now we have lost our appetite; we never see anything but this manna!(BZ)

The manna was like coriander seed(CA) and looked like resin.(CB) The people went around gathering it,(CC) and then ground it in a hand mill or crushed it in a mortar. They cooked it in a pot or made it into loaves. And it tasted like something made with olive oil. When the dew(CD) settled on the camp at night, the manna also came down.

10 Moses heard the people of every family wailing(CE) at the entrance to their tents. The Lord became exceedingly angry, and Moses was troubled. 11 He asked the Lord, “Why have you brought this trouble(CF) on your servant? What have I done to displease you that you put the burden of all these people on me?(CG) 12 Did I conceive all these people? Did I give them birth? Why do you tell me to carry them in my arms, as a nurse carries an infant,(CH) to the land you promised on oath(CI) to their ancestors?(CJ) 13 Where can I get meat for all these people?(CK) They keep wailing to me, ‘Give us meat to eat!’ 14 I cannot carry all these people by myself; the burden is too heavy for me.(CL) 15 If this is how you are going to treat me, please go ahead and kill me(CM)—if I have found favor in your eyes—and do not let me face my own ruin.”

16 The Lord said to Moses: “Bring me seventy of Israel’s elders(CN) who are known to you as leaders and officials among the people.(CO) Have them come to the tent of meeting,(CP) that they may stand there with you. 17 I will come down and speak with you(CQ) there, and I will take some of the power of the Spirit that is on you and put it on them.(CR) They will share the burden of the people with you so that you will not have to carry it alone.(CS)

18 “Tell the people: ‘Consecrate yourselves(CT) in preparation for tomorrow, when you will eat meat. The Lord heard you when you wailed,(CU) “If only we had meat to eat! We were better off in Egypt!”(CV) Now the Lord will give you meat,(CW) and you will eat it. 19 You will not eat it for just one day, or two days, or five, ten or twenty days, 20 but for a whole month—until it comes out of your nostrils and you loathe it(CX)—because you have rejected the Lord,(CY) who is among you, and have wailed before him, saying, “Why did we ever leave Egypt?”’”(CZ)

21 But Moses said, “Here I am among six hundred thousand men(DA) on foot, and you say, ‘I will give them meat to eat for a whole month!’ 22 Would they have enough if flocks and herds were slaughtered for them? Would they have enough if all the fish in the sea were caught for them?”(DB)

23 The Lord answered Moses, “Is the Lord’s arm too short?(DC) Now you will see whether or not what I say will come true for you.(DD)

Mark 14:1-21

Jesus Anointed at Bethany(A)(B)(C)

14 Now the Passover(D) and the Festival of Unleavened Bread were only two days away, and the chief priests and the teachers of the law were scheming to arrest Jesus secretly and kill him.(E) “But not during the festival,” they said, “or the people may riot.”

While he was in Bethany,(F) reclining at the table in the home of Simon the Leper, a woman came with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, made of pure nard. She broke the jar and poured the perfume on his head.(G)

Some of those present were saying indignantly to one another, “Why this waste of perfume? It could have been sold for more than a year’s wages[a] and the money given to the poor.” And they rebuked her harshly.

“Leave her alone,” said Jesus. “Why are you bothering her? She has done a beautiful thing to me. The poor you will always have with you,[b] and you can help them any time you want.(H) But you will not always have me. She did what she could. She poured perfume on my body beforehand to prepare for my burial.(I) Truly I tell you, wherever the gospel is preached throughout the world,(J) what she has done will also be told, in memory of her.”

10 Then Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve,(K) went to the chief priests to betray Jesus to them.(L) 11 They were delighted to hear this and promised to give him money. So he watched for an opportunity to hand him over.

The Last Supper(M)(N)

12 On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread, when it was customary to sacrifice the Passover lamb,(O) Jesus’ disciples asked him, “Where do you want us to go and make preparations for you to eat the Passover?”

13 So he sent two of his disciples, telling them, “Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him. 14 Say to the owner of the house he enters, ‘The Teacher asks: Where is my guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ 15 He will show you a large room upstairs,(P) furnished and ready. Make preparations for us there.”

16 The disciples left, went into the city and found things just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the Passover.

17 When evening came, Jesus arrived with the Twelve. 18 While they were reclining at the table eating, he said, “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me—one who is eating with me.”

19 They were saddened, and one by one they said to him, “Surely you don’t mean me?”

20 “It is one of the Twelve,” he replied, “one who dips bread into the bowl with me.(Q) 21 The Son of Man(R) will go just as it is written about him. But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born.”

Psalm 51

Psalm 51[a]

For the director of music. A psalm of David. When the prophet Nathan came to him after David had committed adultery with Bathsheba.(A)

Have mercy(B) on me, O God,
according to your unfailing love;(C)
according to your great compassion(D)
blot out(E) my transgressions.(F)
Wash away(G) all my iniquity
and cleanse(H) me from my sin.

For I know my transgressions,
and my sin is always before me.(I)
Against you, you only, have I sinned(J)
and done what is evil in your sight;(K)
so you are right in your verdict
and justified when you judge.(L)
Surely I was sinful(M) at birth,(N)
sinful from the time my mother conceived me.
Yet you desired faithfulness even in the womb;
you taught me wisdom(O) in that secret place.(P)

Cleanse(Q) me with hyssop,(R) and I will be clean;
wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.(S)
Let me hear joy and gladness;(T)
let the bones(U) you have crushed rejoice.
Hide your face from my sins(V)
and blot out(W) all my iniquity.

10 Create in me a pure heart,(X) O God,
and renew a steadfast spirit within me.(Y)
11 Do not cast me(Z) from your presence(AA)
or take your Holy Spirit(AB) from me.
12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation(AC)
and grant me a willing spirit,(AD) to sustain me.(AE)

13 Then I will teach transgressors your ways,(AF)
so that sinners(AG) will turn back to you.(AH)
14 Deliver me(AI) from the guilt of bloodshed,(AJ) O God,
you who are God my Savior,(AK)
and my tongue will sing of your righteousness.(AL)
15 Open my lips, Lord,(AM)
and my mouth will declare your praise.
16 You do not delight in sacrifice,(AN) or I would bring it;
you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings.
17 My sacrifice,(AO) O God, is[b] a broken spirit;
a broken and contrite heart(AP)
you, God, will not despise.

18 May it please you to prosper Zion,(AQ)
to build up the walls of Jerusalem.(AR)
19 Then you will delight in the sacrifices of the righteous,(AS)
in burnt offerings(AT) offered whole;
then bulls(AU) will be offered on your altar.

Numbers 8-9

Setting Up the Lamps

The Lord said to Moses, “Speak to Aaron and say to him, ‘When you set up the lamps, see that all seven light up the area in front of the lampstand.(A)’”

Aaron did so; he set up the lamps so that they faced forward on the lampstand, just as the Lord commanded Moses. This is how the lampstand was made: It was made of hammered gold(B)—from its base to its blossoms. The lampstand was made exactly like the pattern(C) the Lord had shown Moses.

The Setting Apart of the Levites

The Lord said to Moses: “Take the Levites from among all the Israelites and make them ceremonially clean.(D) To purify them, do this: Sprinkle the water of cleansing(E) on them; then have them shave their whole bodies(F) and wash their clothes.(G) And so they will purify themselves.(H) Have them take a young bull with its grain offering of the finest flour mixed with olive oil;(I) then you are to take a second young bull for a sin offering.[a](J) Bring the Levites to the front of the tent of meeting(K) and assemble the whole Israelite community.(L) 10 You are to bring the Levites before the Lord, and the Israelites are to lay their hands on them.(M) 11 Aaron is to present the Levites before the Lord as a wave offering(N) from the Israelites, so that they may be ready to do the work of the Lord.

12 “Then the Levites are to lay their hands on the heads of the bulls,(O) using one for a sin offering(P) to the Lord and the other for a burnt offering,(Q) to make atonement(R) for the Levites. 13 Have the Levites stand in front of Aaron and his sons and then present them as a wave offering(S) to the Lord. 14 In this way you are to set the Levites apart from the other Israelites, and the Levites will be mine.(T)

15 “After you have purified the Levites and presented them as a wave offering,(U) they are to come to do their work at the tent of meeting.(V) 16 They are the Israelites who are to be given wholly to me. I have taken them as my own in place of the firstborn,(W) the first male offspring(X) from every Israelite woman. 17 Every firstborn male in Israel, whether human or animal,(Y) is mine. When I struck down all the firstborn in Egypt, I set them apart for myself.(Z) 18 And I have taken the Levites in place of all the firstborn sons in Israel.(AA) 19 From among all the Israelites, I have given the Levites as gifts to Aaron and his sons(AB) to do the work at the tent of meeting on behalf of the Israelites(AC) and to make atonement for them(AD) so that no plague will strike the Israelites when they go near the sanctuary.”

20 Moses, Aaron and the whole Israelite community did with the Levites just as the Lord commanded Moses. 21 The Levites purified themselves and washed their clothes.(AE) Then Aaron presented them as a wave offering before the Lord and made atonement(AF) for them to purify them.(AG) 22 After that, the Levites came to do their work(AH) at the tent of meeting under the supervision of Aaron and his sons. They did with the Levites just as the Lord commanded Moses.

23 The Lord said to Moses, 24 “This applies to the Levites: Men twenty-five years old or more(AI) shall come to take part in the work at the tent of meeting,(AJ) 25 but at the age of fifty,(AK) they must retire from their regular service and work no longer. 26 They may assist their brothers in performing their duties at the tent of meeting, but they themselves must not do the work.(AL) This, then, is how you are to assign the responsibilities of the Levites.”

The Passover

The Lord spoke to Moses in the Desert of Sinai in the first month(AM) of the second year after they came out of Egypt.(AN) He said, “Have the Israelites celebrate the Passover(AO) at the appointed time.(AP) Celebrate it at the appointed time, at twilight on the fourteenth day of this month,(AQ) in accordance with all its rules and regulations.(AR)

So Moses told the Israelites to celebrate the Passover,(AS) and they did so in the Desert of Sinai(AT) at twilight on the fourteenth day of the first month.(AU) The Israelites did everything just as the Lord commanded Moses.(AV)

But some of them could not celebrate the Passover on that day because they were ceremonially unclean(AW) on account of a dead body.(AX) So they came to Moses and Aaron(AY) that same day and said to Moses, “We have become unclean because of a dead body, but why should we be kept from presenting the Lord’s offering with the other Israelites at the appointed time?(AZ)

Moses answered them, “Wait until I find out what the Lord commands concerning you.”(BA)

Then the Lord said to Moses, 10 “Tell the Israelites: ‘When any of you or your descendants are unclean because of a dead body(BB) or are away on a journey, they are still to celebrate(BC) the Lord’s Passover, 11 but they are to do it on the fourteenth day of the second month(BD) at twilight. They are to eat the lamb, together with unleavened bread and bitter herbs.(BE) 12 They must not leave any of it till morning(BF) or break any of its bones.(BG) When they celebrate the Passover, they must follow all the regulations.(BH) 13 But if anyone who is ceremonially clean and not on a journey fails to celebrate the Passover, they must be cut off from their people(BI) for not presenting the Lord’s offering at the appointed time. They will bear the consequences of their sin.

14 “‘A foreigner(BJ) residing among you is also to celebrate the Lord’s Passover in accordance with its rules and regulations. You must have the same regulations for both the foreigner and the native-born.’”

The Cloud Above the Tabernacle

15 On the day the tabernacle, the tent of the covenant law,(BK) was set up,(BL) the cloud(BM) covered it. From evening till morning the cloud above the tabernacle looked like fire.(BN) 16 That is how it continued to be; the cloud covered it, and at night it looked like fire.(BO) 17 Whenever the cloud lifted from above the tent, the Israelites set out;(BP) wherever the cloud settled, the Israelites encamped.(BQ) 18 At the Lord’s command the Israelites set out, and at his command they encamped. As long as the cloud stayed over the tabernacle, they remained(BR) in camp. 19 When the cloud remained over the tabernacle a long time, the Israelites obeyed the Lord’s order(BS) and did not set out.(BT) 20 Sometimes the cloud was over the tabernacle only a few days; at the Lord’s command they would encamp, and then at his command they would set out. 21 Sometimes the cloud stayed only from evening till morning, and when it lifted in the morning, they set out. Whether by day or by night, whenever the cloud lifted, they set out. 22 Whether the cloud stayed over the tabernacle for two days or a month or a year, the Israelites would remain in camp and not set out; but when it lifted, they would set out. 23 At the Lord’s command they encamped, and at the Lord’s command they set out. They obeyed the Lord’s order, in accordance with his command through Moses.

Mark 13:14-37

14 “When you see ‘the abomination that causes desolation’[a](A) standing where it[b] does not belong—let the reader understand—then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. 15 Let no one on the housetop go down or enter the house to take anything out. 16 Let no one in the field go back to get their cloak. 17 How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers!(B) 18 Pray that this will not take place in winter, 19 because those will be days of distress unequaled from the beginning, when God created the world,(C) until now—and never to be equaled again.(D)

20 “If the Lord had not cut short those days, no one would survive. But for the sake of the elect, whom he has chosen, he has shortened them. 21 At that time if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Messiah!’ or, ‘Look, there he is!’ do not believe it.(E) 22 For false messiahs and false prophets(F) will appear and perform signs and wonders(G) to deceive, if possible, even the elect. 23 So be on your guard;(H) I have told you everything ahead of time.

24 “But in those days, following that distress,

“‘the sun will be darkened,
and the moon will not give its light;
25 the stars will fall from the sky,
and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.’[c](I)

26 “At that time people will see the Son of Man coming in clouds(J) with great power and glory. 27 And he will send his angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of the heavens.(K)

28 “Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near. 29 Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that it[d] is near, right at the door. 30 Truly I tell you, this generation(L) will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened.(M) 31 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.(N)

The Day and Hour Unknown

32 “But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.(O) 33 Be on guard! Be alert[e]!(P) You do not know when that time will come. 34 It’s like a man going away: He leaves his house and puts his servants(Q) in charge, each with their assigned task, and tells the one at the door to keep watch.

35 “Therefore keep watch because you do not know when the owner of the house will come back—whether in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or at dawn. 36 If he comes suddenly, do not let him find you sleeping. 37 What I say to you, I say to everyone: ‘Watch!’”(R)

Psalm 50

Psalm 50

A psalm of Asaph.

The Mighty One, God, the Lord,(A)
speaks and summons the earth
from the rising of the sun to where it sets.(B)
From Zion,(C) perfect in beauty,(D)
God shines forth.(E)
Our God comes(F)
and will not be silent;(G)
a fire devours(H) before him,(I)
and around him a tempest(J) rages.
He summons the heavens above,
and the earth,(K) that he may judge his people:(L)
“Gather to me this consecrated people,(M)
who made a covenant(N) with me by sacrifice.”
And the heavens proclaim(O) his righteousness,
for he is a God of justice.[a][b](P)

“Listen, my people, and I will speak;
I will testify(Q) against you, Israel:
I am God, your God.(R)
I bring no charges(S) against you concerning your sacrifices
or concerning your burnt offerings,(T) which are ever before me.
I have no need of a bull(U) from your stall
or of goats(V) from your pens,(W)
10 for every animal of the forest(X) is mine,
and the cattle on a thousand hills.(Y)
11 I know every bird(Z) in the mountains,
and the insects in the fields(AA) are mine.
12 If I were hungry I would not tell you,
for the world(AB) is mine, and all that is in it.(AC)
13 Do I eat the flesh of bulls
or drink the blood of goats?

14 “Sacrifice thank offerings(AD) to God,
fulfill your vows(AE) to the Most High,(AF)
15 and call(AG) on me in the day of trouble;(AH)
I will deliver(AI) you, and you will honor(AJ) me.”

16 But to the wicked person, God says:

“What right have you to recite my laws
or take my covenant(AK) on your lips?(AL)
17 You hate(AM) my instruction
and cast my words behind(AN) you.
18 When you see a thief, you join(AO) with him;
you throw in your lot with adulterers.(AP)
19 You use your mouth for evil
and harness your tongue to deceit.(AQ)
20 You sit and testify against your brother(AR)
and slander your own mother’s son.
21 When you did these things and I kept silent,(AS)
you thought I was exactly[c] like you.
But I now arraign(AT) you
and set my accusations(AU) before you.

22 “Consider this, you who forget God,(AV)
or I will tear you to pieces, with no one to rescue you:(AW)
23 Those who sacrifice thank offerings honor me,
and to the blameless[d] I will show my salvation.(AX)
