Isaiah 1:1-2:22, 2 Corinthians 10:1-18, Psalm 52:1-9, Proverbs 22:26-27

Today is the eighth day of September, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian, like I’ve been every day for going on 17 years. Every day here, I’m Brian. It’s great to be here with you today, as we continue our journey forward day-by-day, step-by-step, immersing ourselves in the Scriptures and allowing them to speak into our lives and forming the choices, the thoughts, the actions, that we take. Great to be here with you today and gather around this Global Campfire for the next step forward.

Introduction to the Book of Isaiah:

And yesterday, we concluded, in the Old Testament, the book of Song of Songs. Which means that we’re moving into some new territory today, completely different kind of territory than the Song of Songs. Today, we will begin the book of Isaiah, which is a prophetic book in the Old Testament, classified among a grouping of books known as the Major Prophets, so that would be Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lamentations, Ezekiel and Daniel. And the distinction of major prophets doesn’t mean more important voice, it has more to do with the scope of the material. So, like Isaiah, we’re gonna move into Isaiah today, but we’re gonna camp out in Isaiah for a while because it’s one of the longer books in the Bible, 66 chapters. So, the scope of the material, creates the distinction, major prophets. So, when we get to the minor prophets, we’ll see that they’re much shorter in scope and content. Some of the minor prophets, when we get to them, lots of them we’ll read through in one day, they’re that short. The name Isaiah means the Lord saves and Isaiah was a passionate Old Testament prophet. Isaiah is quoted in the New Testament often. Jesus quotes from Isaiah many times in the Gospels. In fact, Isaiah is the backdrop for Jesus announcing his ministry, “the Spirit of the Lord is upon me, He has anointed me, to bring good news to the poor. He sent me to proclaim that captives will be free, the blind will receive their sight, the oppressed will be set free at the time of the Lord’s favor has come.” Jesus announces that He’s fulfilling that prophecy in their ears. So, Isaiah is important. And here’s the thing about Isaiah amongst scholars, we have the book of Isaiah but many, many, many biblical scholars believe that there’s more than one voice in the book of Isaiah. Some think it may be, it’s a couple of different voices because the first half of Isaiah is full of a lot of judgment, a lot of calling out of things. The second half of Isaiah gets much more hopeful, a lot of beautiful promises of restoration. And then there are scholars that see even a couple more voices and can kind of make those distinctions. The truth is we don’t know whether this was a singular text at one time, that was created overtime, and so, it has different complexions or whether it was kind of begun by Isaiah and then the prophetic schools that were in existence at the time, that this tradition carried forward. These kinds of things are debated and hotly debated among biblical scholars all of the time, it’s part of our tradition, it’s always been going on, as we attempt to excavate and dig deeper and deeper to arrive at a more complete picture of what it is we’re reading and how it becomes actionable in our own lives. Nevertheless, it is believed that Isaiah lived somewhere around the second half of the eighth century BC, it appears that he was not like a peasant or commoner, that he comes from power of some sort or maybe part of an upper-class. He had access to kings. He had access to royalty, that’s not normal for a common person. And even though he lived over, he lived through the reins of many different kings, he was able to prophesy to them, so he had access, that’s not something that just a farmer from some backwater somewhere could just walk into Jerusalem and do this. The prophecies in Isaiah will cover the reins of five different kings: Hussiah, Jothem, Ahaz, Hezekiah and Manasseh. And then, there are Jewish and current Christian traditions that would tell us Isaiah was martyred, and in particular was martyred by being sawed in half and that this came at the order of King Manasseh. That…that tradition isn’t in the Scriptures. There is a small reference in the book of Hebrews that talk about different martyrs, some died by stoning, some were sawed in half, others were killed with the sword. That would be maybe as close as we could come to this tradition. And as I was saying just a couple minutes ago, this book has divisions in it, changes of tone and if we can split it in half, the first 39 chapters are discussing judgment, God’s judgment, very sobering stuff. And then chapters 40 through the end, really bring about God’s comfort and restoration, very, very hopeful part of the book. But as we read this, we should note that Isaiah doesn’t just show up on the scene because God had a bad day yesterday and then woke up on the wrong side of the bed today and starts being angry with the human race and He’s gonna cast things down and create judgment upon the earth. He is going to do those things but it’s because of what He’s seeing which really makes justice a major theme inside the book of Isaiah. And it’s…it’s not just like justice, it’s calling out and labeling injustice, that is not gonna work. He’s not building a people who oppress the widow and the orphan, He’s not creating a people that will dominate over and enslave other people, He’s is not building the people who take advantage in any way that they can. And these things are being called to the surface. And we see this very, very clearly in Isaiah, that the heart of the text is for the downtrodden. So, let’s remember that, that is the backdrop here going on as we read through this because when read through and it’s a book of prophecy, there’s plenty a metaphor, there’s plenty of symbolism and there’s plenty of allegory, it’s easy to check out and just get lost and think this is a prophecy to…to and ancient people, it has nothing to do with me. Just because it was from a prophet and God said it and so it’s in the Bible but doesn’t really mean anything to me today. Justice still means something today, how we interpret and enforce it. In fact, I guess it could be said that it’s…it’s a raging battle now, just like it’s always been, it gets politicized now, like it has always been, it gets murky and cloudy, like it’s always been. And so, if we look deep here, we can see things that have always been going on that are not supposed to be going on. So, let’s begin, Isaiah chapter 1 verse 1, through 2 verse 22 today.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word and we love You, we worship You and we are grateful for such a gift, such a tangible gift, something that we can turn to, no matter how foggy, murky or dark life can seem, as a tangible gift in the Scriptures. And we thank You for what they speak into our souls and how they challenge everything about us and how they transform us, as we obey them and surrender ourselves to You in utter dependence. Father, as we move into this new territory, into the prophets, come, Holy Spirit, lead us into all truth, this is our constant prayer. This is what we seek and what we desire, that we would know and understand and grow further and further as we are transformed into Your likeness. So, may we collaborate and cooperate with You in every way and not resist You in any way, we ask in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Prayer and Encouragements:

Hello my name is Patrick from Calgary, Alberta, Canada. And I’m asking for prayer for my dad. His name is Bob, Bob Reef. He has been a pastor for 50+ years. He is 93 years old and he still preaches occasionally. But he’s doing pretty good for 93, he’s got pacemakers and a hearing aids. Still drives his own car, goes for walks on a daily basis and goes on the treadmill every morning. But he’s very lonely because my mother and his wife passed away from dementia last year and he’s just getting lonelier and lonelier. They’d been married, were married 62 years and he has a lot of regrets. He is still the only one from his generation, all the people he’s known, his cousins, parents, grandmas, grandpas, sisters, passed and he’s basically the only one left. And he’s just wondering what his purpose is. He spends most of the time in his home, doing nothing. He’s been a warrior for Christ and I just pray for my dad, that You’d give him a purpose. I just pray for that, I only need to pray for my dad. Again, his name is Bob and he’s just a real void to suddenly to find after 62 two years, he’s all alone. So, I love my dad very much and I just pray for miracle in his life right now. In Jesus name. Thank you.

Hello DAB family, this is Rachel in St. Louis. I called last week about my daughter Ella, suffering from anorexia. I just want to say passionately and humbly thank you so much for all the prayers. I’m a little behind. But I have heard your prayers from all over the world and here in the states and I am so touched and so humbled and so grateful because your prayers have been just wrapping my family in peace and comfort. My daughters had one week in the facility and she’s calm, and completing her meal plan. And I ask that you please just keep praying for her, cause she has a long road ahead. Help her continue to stay calm and understand the steps that she needs to take. And I also want to lift up Sarah the daughter of a mom who called in on behalf of Ella. I will walk with you and pray for Sarah. And I also want to pray for Hannah and John and Rachel in the UK because John has called for his daughter Hannah who also suffers from anorexia. And I’ve been praying alongside you and lifting up Hannah. These precious children, I rebuke this evil that comes against our children’s minds and how harmful it is and we are stronger and there are so many more with us then against us, we will defeat this evil together. Thank you, I love you. I’m humbled by your prayer, your prayers help given me faith and restore my hope and together we are going to move mountains and save our children. Dear Jesus save our precious children, we love you and we’re grateful. Thank you. Watch over Sarah and Hannah, Lord, thank you. Amen

Hey, this one goes out to Brian. This is Micah in Awe, in Kansas City, Missouri. I just wanted to say thank you for the message after today’s reading, September 5th reading and you we’re talking about looking at our lives and seeing who we’re living for, how we’re living. Yeah, I’m getting off track, like I’m focusing on money and things and my own joy and my own happiness and like not paying attention to other people anymore and other and the things of God. I listen to the word and I listen to sermons and every once in a while I listen to worship music. But I’m really getting off track. Today’s insight was great for me to hear. I need to start refocusing, reframing my life and get back focused on doing the work of God. and one thing that hit me is, whenever you’re talking about when we die. We can’t take anything with us, like was mentioned. But, so, I was thinking, whenever I go, I’m back to being in the humble mess that I was before God gave me all this stuff. Like I was a total mess before God change my life and He’s applied all these different things to me, He’s given me wisdom. I don’t know if I ever even asked for wisdom, but He’s given me so much just understanding of things, given me my monetary wealth and I stopped typing recently, just forget about it. And like, these things He’s given me, without Him, stripped away from me, I’m still this mess of a ridiculous person, that’s just irresponsible and just totally needy. Today, I remembered that without that, that’s how I’m gonna leave this earth, without that. I’m going back to the humble state, just me, not even clothing or whatever. Anyway, thank you Brian.

Good morning, Daily Audio Bible. My name is Jesus from beautiful South Florida, where I am today in this new month. I thank God for the devotional on September 5. It came across on the prayer request from a sister named Gina. I don’t know where she said she was from, I can’t mention it. I can’t pronounce it. I can pronounce the name of the Lord God. And she pray about her, her mate, her partner, doing time in prison. I want to talk and I want to pray for you for the life of your partner. I’m gonna ask God this morning to enhance your faith, to bring the Holy Spirit power over you, so that you may have understanding. You know we pray for the life of your partner, that he serves time for whatever he has done or whatever is going on in his life. But you have the power of God on your head. And the Holy Spirit will fill you with patience and that you would motivate him that he may find people to speak over them. That he may find ministry even there in jail. Just as Paul made it happen from prison walls, so can he. My sister, I ask that you support him, that you have faith and patience in the Lord. Trust in Christ in everything that you believe. That your hand, that your prayers would soothe and protect the life of your partner. And that he would come to peace and that everything would be said in his life. Whatever is meant to be, will be. And that you would have encouraging words for those who are in there with him. Sister Gina, may the Lord be with you. May the power that rose Christ from the grave, daily work within you.

Hey Daily Audio Bible family, this is John no longer from Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. We’ve relocate and are currently up in York Beach, Maine. In the process of moving to Massachusetts but that is a story for another day. More importantly family, I’d really love for you to join me in prayer right now. We were just on our way into Portsmouth, New Hampshire, it’s kind of rainy here today. We decided to stop a do a little bit of shopping for my daughter Leah, who’s started up college, her first year as a freshman. And I bumped into a couple at a shoe store and they have learned that a fire just destroyed there home back in Medford, Massachusetts. Would you please join me in praying for Ben and for Nicole. A couple people that I just met in line at the shoe store I was at. Father God, thank You for the Daily Audio Bible family and thank you for the power of prayer, Father God. Thank You that you are a God that heals and a God that restores, Jesus. I ask Father, that You show yourself in a magnificent way, in a way that only you can, to bring comfort and wholeness to Nicole and to Ben and to their family. And Father, thank You in advance for putting around them and placing them in the hands of people that are gonna be resourceful to them, that are gonna contribute to their lives in a meaningful way. Lord Jesus, use this as an opportunity Father, to surround them with Christian people who can show them Your love and Your light God, to bring them closer to you, so that You can be a testimony for them one day Jesus down the road, I believe that with all my heart and I know that You’re able, more able Father God than any one, and anything. We love You Jesus, in your precious name I pray. Amen. Thank you so much family. Thanks for praying for Ben and Nicole.

Isaiah 1-2

This is the vision which Isaiah, son of Amoz, saw about Judah and Jerusalem at the time of Kings Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah.

The Lord Accuses Israel of Sin

Listen, heaven, and pay attention, earth!
The Lord has spoken,
“I raised ⌞my⌟ children and helped them grow,
but they have rebelled against me.
Oxen know their owners,
and donkeys know where their masters feed them.
But Israel doesn’t know ⌞its owner⌟.
My people don’t understand ⌞who feeds them⌟.

“How horrible it will be for a nation that sins.
⌞Its⌟ people are loaded down with guilt.
They are descendants of evildoers
and destructive children.
They have abandoned the Lord.
They have despised the Holy One of Israel.
They have turned their backs on him.

“Why do you still want to be beaten?
Why do you continue to rebel?
Your whole head is infected.
Your whole heart is failing.
From the bottom of your feet to the top of your head
there is no healthy spot left on your ⌞body⌟
only bruises, sores, and fresh wounds.
They haven’t been cleansed, bandaged,
or soothed with oil.

“Your country is devastated.
Your cities are burned down.
Your fields are destroyed right before your eyes by foreigners.
Your fields are devastated and taken over by foreigners.
My people Zion are left like a hut in a vineyard,
like a shack in a cucumber field,
like a city under attack.”

If the Lord of Armies hadn’t left us a few survivors,
we would have been like Sodom and Gomorrah.

Israel’s Corrupt Religion

10 Listen to the Lord’s word, you rulers of Sodom!
Pay attention to the teachings from our God, you people of Gomorrah!
11 The Lord asks, “What do your many animal sacrifices mean to me?
I’ve had enough of your burnt offerings of rams
and enough fat from your fattened calves.
I’m not pleased with the blood of bulls, lambs, or male goats.
12 When you appear in my presence,
who asked you to trample on my courtyards?
13 Don’t bring any more worthless grain offerings.
Your incense is disgusting to me,
so are your New Moon Festivals, your days of rest—holy days,
and the assemblies you call.
I can’t stand your evil assemblies.
14 I hate your New Moon Festivals and your appointed festivals.
They’ve become a burden to me,
and I’m tired of putting up with them.
15 So when you stretch out your hands ⌞in prayer⌟,
I will turn my eyes away from you.
Even though you offer many prayers,
I will not listen because your hands are covered with blood.

The Lord Invites Israel to Turn Away from Sin

16 “Wash yourselves! Become clean!
Get your evil deeds out of my sight.
Stop doing evil.
17 Learn to do good.
Seek justice.
Arrest oppressors.
Defend orphans.
Plead the case of widows.”

18 “Come on now, let’s discuss this!” says the Lord.
“Though your sins are bright red,
they will become as white as snow.
Though they are dark red,
they will become as white as wool.
19 If you are willing and obedient,
you will eat the best from the land.
20 But if you refuse and rebel,
you will be destroyed by swords.”
The Lord has spoken.

Jerusalem’s Future

21 How the faithful town has become a prostitute!
She was full of justice,
and righteousness lived in her.
But now murderers live there!
22 Your silver is not pure.
Your wine is watered down.
23 Your rulers are rebels, friends with thieves.
They all love bribes and run after gifts.
They never defend orphans.
They don’t notice the widows’ pleas.

24 That’s why the Lord, the Lord of Armies, the Mighty One of Israel, says,

“How horrible it will be when I take revenge on my opponents!
I will avenge myself against my enemies.
25 I will turn my power against you.
I will remove your impurities with bleach.
I will get rid of all your impurities.
26 I will give you judges like you had long ago,
advisers like you had in the beginning.
After that you will be called the Righteous City,
the Faithful Town.”

27 Zion will be pardoned by ⌞the Lord’s⌟ justice,
and those who return will be pardoned
by ⌞the Lord’s⌟ righteousness.
28 Rebels and sinners will be crushed at the same time,
and those who abandon the Lord will come to an end.
29 You will be ashamed of the oaks that you wanted to worship
and embarrassed by the garden that you have chosen for your gods.
30 You will be like an oak whose leaves wither
and like a garden without water.
31 Strong people will become tinder for a fire,
and their work will be the spark.
Both of them will burn together,
and there will be no one to put out the fire.

The Lord Will Teach the Nations(A)

This is the message which Isaiah, son of Amoz, saw about Judah and Jerusalem.

In the last days the mountain of the Lord’s house
will be established as the highest of the mountains
and raised above the hills.
All the nations will stream to it.
Then many people will come and say,
“Let’s go to the mountain of the Lord,
to the house of the God of Jacob.
He will teach us his ways so that we may live by them.”
The teachings will go out from Zion.
The Lord’s word will go out from Jerusalem.
Then he will judge disputes between nations
and settle arguments between many people.
They will hammer their swords into plowblades
and their spears into pruning shears.
Nations will never fight against each other,
and they will never train for war again.
Come, descendants of Jacob,
let’s live in the light of the Lord.

Israel’s Sins

Lord, you have abandoned your people, the descendants of Jacob,
because they are filled with Eastern influences.
They are fortunetellers like the Philistines,
and they make deals with foreigners.
Their land is filled with silver and gold,
and there is no end to their treasures.
Their land is filled with horses,
and there is no end to their chariots.
Their land is filled with idols,
and they worship what their hands have shaped
and what their fingers have molded.
People will be brought down. Everyone will be humbled.
Do not forgive them.
10 Go in among the rocks and hide underground
because of the Lord’s terrifying presence
and the honor of his majesty.
11 The eyes of arrogant people will be humbled.
High and mighty people will be brought down.
On that day the Lord alone will be honored.

The Day of the Lord’s Judgment

12 The Lord of Armies will have his day
against all who are arrogant and conceited
and all who are proud of themselves (they will be humbled),
13 against all the towering and mighty cedars of Lebanon
and all the oaks of Bashan,
14 against all the high mountains
and all the lofty hills,
15 against every high tower
and every fortified wall,
16 against all the large ships of Tarshish
and all the beautiful boats.

17 Then arrogant people will be brought down,
and high and mighty people will be humbled.
On that day the Lord alone will be honored.
18 Then idols will disappear completely.
19 People will go into caves in the rocks
and into holes in the ground
because of the Lord’s terrifying presence
and the honor of his majesty
when he rises to terrify the earth.
20 On that day people will throw to the moles and the bats
the silver and gold idols that they made
for themselves to worship.
21 They will go into caves in the rocks
and into cracks in the cliffs
because of the Lord’s terrifying presence
and the honor of his majesty
when he rises to terrify the earth.

22 Stop trusting people.
Their life is in their nostrils.
How can they be worth anything?

2 Corinthians 10

Paul’s Authority to Speak Forcefully

10 I, Paul, make my appeal to you with the gentleness and kindness of Christ. I’m the one who is humble when I’m with you but forceful toward you when I’m not with you. I beg you that when I am with you I won’t have to deal forcefully with you. I expect I will have to because some people think that we are only guided by human motives. Of course we are human, but we don’t fight like humans. The weapons we use in our fight are not made by humans. Rather, they are powerful weapons from God. With them we destroy people’s defenses, that is, their arguments and all their intellectual arrogance that oppose the knowledge of God. We take every thought captive so that it is obedient to Christ. We are ready to punish every act of disobedience when you have become completely obedient.

Look at the plain facts! If anyone is confident he belongs to Christ, he should take note that we also belong to Christ. So, if I brag a little too much about the authority which the Lord gave us, I’m not ashamed. The Lord gave us this authority to help you, not to hurt you.

I don’t want you to think that I’m trying to frighten you with my letters. 10 I know that someone is saying that my letters are powerful and strong, but that I’m a weakling and a terrible speaker. 11 The person who is saying those things should take note of this fact: When we are with you we will do the things that we wrote about in our letters when we weren’t with you.

Paul’s Reason for Bragging

12 We wouldn’t put ourselves in the same class with or compare ourselves to those who are bold enough to make their own recommendations. Certainly, when they measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves to themselves, they show how foolish they are.

13 How can we brag about things that no one can evaluate? Instead, we will only brag about what God has given us to do—coming to ⌞the city of Corinth⌟ where you live. 14 It’s not as though we hadn’t already been to Corinth. We’re not overstating the facts. The fact is that we were the first to arrive in Corinth with the Good News about Christ. 15 How can we brag about things done by others that can’t be evaluated?

We have confidence that as your faith grows, you will think enough of us to give us the help we need to carry out our assignment— 16 spreading the Good News in the regions far beyond you. We won’t brag about things already accomplished by someone else.

17 “Whoever brags should brag about what the Lord has done.” 18 It isn’t the person who makes his own recommendation who receives approval, but the person whom the Lord recommends.

Psalm 52

For the choir director; a maskil; a psalm by David when Doeg (who was from Edom) told Saul that David had come to Ahimelech’s home.

52 Why do you brag about the evil you’ve done, you hero?
The mercy of God lasts all day long!
Your tongue makes up threats.
It’s like a sharp razor, you master of deceit.
You prefer evil to good.
You prefer lying to speaking the truth. Selah
You love every destructive accusation, you deceitful tongue!

But God will ruin you forever.
He will grab you and drag you out of your tent.
He will pull your roots out of this world of the living. Selah
Righteous people will see ⌞this⌟ and be struck with fear.
They will laugh at you and say,
“Look at this person who refused to make God his fortress!
Instead, he trusted his great wealth
and became strong through his greed.”

But I am like a large olive tree in God’s house.
I trust the mercy of God forever and ever.
I will give thanks to you forever
for what you have done.
In the presence of your godly people,
I will wait with hope in your good name.

Proverbs 22:26-27

26 Do not be ⌞found⌟ among those who make deals with a handshake,
among those who guarantee other people’s loans.

Song 5:1-8:14, 2 Corinthians 9:1-15, Psalms 51:1-19, Proverbs 22:24-25

Today is the 7th day of September welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I’m Brian it’s great to be here with you today like it is every day always taking the next step forward together. And our next step for leads us to part two of what we started yesterday, which is the song of Solomon, the song of songs. We will conclude the song of songs today. And it’s our tradition around here and has been for…my goodness…how long…a long, long time that when we get to the song of Solomon my wife Jill joins me and we read through it all together. So, we began that yesterday, and we will conclude today with song of songs chapter 5 through 8.

Commentary:

Okay. So, even as we conclude the song of Solomon and continue our journey through second Corinthians it’s the psalm today, a psalm of repentance. And understanding the back story of this Psalm of repentance is poignant and leads us to consider our own repentance. And, so, as the story goes, because we’ve already moved through the story when we read to the books of Samuel, second Samuel, in particular once David has become the king. Remember first Samuel sort of deals with King Saul. David is in the mix, but he spends a lot of his time trying to stay alive because Saul is trying to kill him. By the time we get to second Samuel, David, becomes the king of all Israel. And the troops are off in battle. David has remained in Jerusalem. He wakes up from a nap. He is out on his front porch overlooking the city, and he looks down and sees a very beautiful woman bathing and he wants her. And, so, he takes her. He is the king. Her name is Bathsheba and David gets her pregnant and she happens to be married and not just married anybody, married to one of the most loyal and capable servants that David has. Bathsheba’s husband’s name was Uriah, Uriah the Hittite. And David does all kinds of things to cover this up, what he has done and this pregnancy. He brings Uriah back from the battles and tries to send him home to his wife where he can take comfort. And if that can happen then this whole thing can probably be covered up. Only David and Bathsheba will know. It’s just that Uriah is a righteous person, a loyal person to death. And, so, in the end try to cover this up David sends Uriah back to the front lines with a note to the general to put him where the fiercest fighting is so that he might die. And he does and Uriah is killed in battle. That is a dark sordid story, a really dark story for a person who is known to be the friend of God, a man after God’s own hearts. But he certainly wasn’t in that posture when he did what he did. And eventually Nathan the prophet comes and confronts David with the story about a little sheep that was part of the poor man’s family, when a rich man came and took that sheep and fed it to unexpected guests. David, here’s the story and is furious about it, about the injustice of it until Nathan spins it around and says, you are that person. And it hits David full square in the mouth, the full weight and scope of what he has done. And David pens this psalm. It cries out, “purify me from sin with hyssop and I will be clean. Wash me and I will be whiter than snow. Let me hear sounds of joy and gladness, let the bones that you of broken dance. Hide your face from my sins and wipe out all that I have done wrong. Create a clean heart in me oh, God, and renew a faithful spirit within me. Do not force me away from your presence and do not take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore the joy of your salvation to me and provide me with a spirit of willing obedience.” Understanding the back story, the inspiration for this song makes it so poignant. And truth be told, there’s probably none of us that have reached these kinds of depths. Very likely none of us have that level of power. David was the king. That’s how he was able to perpetrate what he did, but he did have the power and he used the power for evil. And when he realized it, he realized he had been trying to cover up his sin by sinning even more, He tried to cover up one evil with a greater evil and cover up that evil with a greater evil and it just kept getting worse and now he’s confronted with what he’s done and there is no way to cover it up. The only possible way is to fall in surrender and repentance and beg God to create a clean heart out of the dark blackness that he had created. And, so, this is a beautiful and poignant psalm of repentance that we should be familiar with. And like I said, we probably haven’t reached these depths where we can have the power to do the kinds of things that David did and then even commit basically murder by proxy, murder by battle, putting Uriah in a position where he would surely be killed. We probably don’t have that kind of power. But we have power to create darkness, blackness. We have the power to do what we know is wrong and then take one evil and try to cover it up with a greater evil, only realizing that we are compounding things and creating a cage that we can’t escape. Repentance is the only way forward. Repentance is all throughout the Bible. Repentance gets pounded a lot, maybe even to the point that it becomes noneffective when we hear about it or even cliché, but it is a constant and necessary part of the faith journey. Repenting means to change your mind. Like that is literally what it means, to change your mind and go in a different direction. And, so, when we begin to realize that we’re compounding things we can immediately realize we’re not going in the right direction. Repentance is required. We have to change our mind and go in a different direction. If we don’t become familiar with repentance, then we keep compounding the problems and we will eventually destroy ourselves. And, so, let’s take this opportunity as we move through Psalm 51 to look inside and invite the Holy Spirit. And if we remember this was David’s plea, take not your Holy Spirit from me. And, so, let’s invite this same Holy Spirit within us to reveal to us the things that need to change, the ways in which we need to repent. Psalm 51 shows us a lot of things, including the posture of heart that within David, but it also reveals to us that there’s nothing too horrible that we can’t repent from. There isn’t a dark blackness that cannot receive the light of truth. There’s nothing that can’t be restored if we’re willing to change, if we’re willing to repent. And as we know from reading through second Samuel, David eventually married Bathsheba. The baby that she was carrying, they lost the baby. Later, they had another child. His name was Solomon, and he would grow up to become the king of Israel. God will redeem anything that He touches. Let’s not keep things off limits from his touch. Those things are leading us in a way that we do not want to go.

Prayer:

Holy Spirit, we invite You into that because even as we’re talking about it, as happens so often, little things that are going on in our lives come to mind. And there are a myriad of things going on all over the world and all of our different stories and lives in cultures, but we all know it all bubbles forth, and we can begin to see the ways that we need to change. In fact, not just need to change must change, which is by definition repentance. And, so, we begin that process with this prayer. We repent. We humble ourselves. We are crushed by what we see in the side it is leading us astray further away from You and further into the darkness. We have to turn around. We have to go in a different direction. And we start that with the first step right now. We repent. And we invite You Holy Spirit to continue to shine the light of truth into the dark recesses of our hearts surfacing things that need to go away, things that we need to turn away from. Come Holy Spirit into this. May this be the first day of a new beginning where we walk away from what is torturing us and encaging us and imprisoning us. We pray this in the powerful name of Jesus. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hey People on the Water it’s Shayna from Saskatchewan. I just heard your dad call in saying he just dropped you off at college and I thought that was pretty awesome because we hear from you, but I don’t think we’ve ever heard from your dad. Anyways, I work at a university, so I know what is like. I see every day what new students go through, and we just started up too, so. So, Heavenly Father, I want to lift up to You people on the water. Lord, will You give him peace while he starts this new chapter in his life. Will You be with him, will You guide him and will You stay at the present with him? He’s such a warrior for You, God and I just…I…I don’t ever wanna see that falter. I don’t ever want to hear that he’s too busy for You or too busy to do Your work. So, Lord, I just ask You to bless his school year. And please provide him any provisions that he needs while he is there. In Jesus’ name. Amen. You’re gonna do awesome. Shayna from Saskatchewan.

Good morning, Daily Audio Bible family this is Christine from the NC US calling to lift up a fellow DABber in prayer. I apologize. I’m not 100% sure of your name. I heard your prayer request a few days ago and it hasn’t left me yet and I meant to call in then, but I haven’t. I think your name was Jalen, but I’m not sure. But you said that your psychologist or psychiatrist was retiring and that you were devastated, that you didn’t know how you were going to do life without this person. I just want to lift you up in prayer. Lord, I just pray for this fellow believer. I pray for healing in her heart, mind, and soul God, that she would come to know You and walk with You more closely than ever before. I pray that You would become her hope, that You would become her everything, that You would be the one that she leans on. God, I know that we need help along the way, but You are our only true hope and our only true strength and everything we have comes from You. Sister, I pray for you. I pray that you. I pray that you would allow God to heal you in the areas to where you’re insecure, that you’re afraid, that you feel like you can’t do these things, that you can’t do life. I pray for spiritual eyes and ears to hear and see the work of God in your life, that you would know the strength He has given you to carry on. I pray that you would find fellow believers as friends that would either be more mentors to you or be in the same boat that you are, that you could encourage each other. I pray that God will bring other people in faith…

Hey, DAB family, this is Alexa calling from just outside London, UK. And I just want to start by saying thank you to everyone for all your prayers, because honestly, it is a miracle of God that has happened, that my grandma who was in multiple organ failure and we were told that she only had a couple days left, it is a miracle of God that she is still living. She is still breathing. My mum was able to fly out to Uganda to see her, to be with her and that’s such a blessing to her, you know. I prayed. You guys prayed and we prayed that God would give peace in this situation and that if it wasn’t the Lord’s will for my mom to make it out there on time, that He would give her a piece and as my grandma transitions into glory. But God is good and He’s enabled her to go out there and say her goodbyes, which was really important for her. And, so, I just want to thank God for that. I also want to give praise and thanks because she travelled on some really dangerous roads and it’s rainy season out there and the journey was about 12 hours and there was so much favor. She was given a car for free. Someone else __ the car for her. She was given a driver and she made it up. And even though they arrived at 3am in the morning she made it up and into the village and to the hospital __ and had my grandmother waiting for her. So, I just want to say thank you. I want to give glory to God for what seemed impossible. And I’m grateful. I love you guys.

[singing starts] In the morning when I rise. In the morning when I arise. In the morning when I rise give me Jesus. Give me Jesus. Give me Jesus. You can have all this world. Give me Jesus. When I am alone. Oh, when I am alone. Oh when, I am alone give me Jesus. Give me Jesus. Give me Jesus. You can have all this world just give me Jesus. And when I come to die. Oh, when I come to die. Oh, when I come to die give me Jesus [singing stops].

Hey Daily Audio Bible family, this is Travis from Alberta, Canada. This is for Shayna from Saskatchewan. You were on the podcast today asking for prayer for the guy that’s come into your life, he has to do…to do some time. And you know, I just wanted to get on here and pray for you. I also have a friend that is getting sent in this week. He’s looking at some time. And though I’ve had friends who have gone into…have gone into prison and God has completely changed their lives. And, so, I hope like this is something that God uses just to bring you all closer to Him. So, I’m just going to pray and just know that somebody is out there thinking of you both and praying for you. Heavenly Father I praise You and I love You and I thank You for Shayna. And God, I ask that You would just watch over her and her guy, Lord, that You would be with them as he does his time, God, that You would just meet him in those walls, that You would meet him there, God, and You would draw him closer and closer to You, and that You would also draw Shayna closer and closer to You oh God, that Lord this would be a time of getting closer with You and not running from You. Lord, watch over them. Take care of them. Draw them nearer. Protect them. I pray this all in Jesus’ name. Amen. God bless you.

Song of Solomon 1:1-4:16, 2 Corinthians 8:16-24, Psalm 50:1-23, Proverbs 22:22-23

Today is the 6th day of September, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian. It is wonderful to be here with you today, as we gather around the Global Campfire and move forward together.

Introduction to the Book of Song of Solomon:

In the Old Testament, we have spent some time in the book of Job, and then in the book of Ecclesiastes. So, wisdom literature but very, very particular, dealing with some of the more darker, difficult topics that we face as human beings. But this leads us to some brand-new territory, unlike any other territory that we’ve been in the Bible, so far. And this territory is known as the Song of Songs or the Song of Solomon. And it’s pretty short, we will read it over the course of the next couple of days, but it is poetry and it’s potent poetry, beautiful poetry, that…that on the face of it, deals with human sexuality. And it’s a poem and so it’s poetry and so poetry is full of metaphor and allegory. And so, this book, the Song of Solomon, has been looked at a number of ways, which is totally fine, it’s poetry, we look through a certain lens when we understand what the genre is, what we’re reading. But we also need to take it at face value and understand that human sexuality and the joy of covenantal, marital relationship is important, important enough that we find it here in the middle of the Bible, that is literally what we will read in the poem: passionate, consummation of love between a man and a woman, who are lovesick and cannot get enough of each other. And it stands on its own for that sake. Ancient Jewish tradition, as well as Christian tradition has allegorical views of this poetry. So, like, from ancient Jewish perspective, it…it’s the story of God revealing how passionate He is and how passionately He loves His children, who are the Hebrew people. And that is totally supportable in the Scriptures. In the Christian tradition, it’s like an allegorical look at Christ’s, Jesus passionate love for His church, His bride, and foreshadowing of His desire for her. And we’re in one of the situations where we’re dealing with poetry. And so, it can speak to us in any of these ways. We can look at it through any of these lenses and all of these interpretations can be true. And so, as we read through this, just invite the Holy Spirit to allow you to see what you need to see and consider what you need to consider and hear what you need to hear. I love it when we get to this point in the year because it’s an opportunity for me to invite my wife Jill, to join us here, because Song of Solomon is largely poetry between a man and woman, her friends and his friends, sort of a male and female voice in the poetry. And so, we will read through this together. And so, let’s dive in together and enjoy the Song of Songs, today chapters 1 through 4.

Prayer:

Father, thank You, thank You for the Scriptures. Thank You for bringing us through the territory that we’ve come through, the wisdom literature in Job and Ecclesiastes and thank You for bringing us into the Song of Songs. And may we drink deeply from it, both in what it is saying literally and also in considering how passionate You are toward Your children. But even as we view that and see once again, an example of how deeply You love us, may we reflect upon whether or not, we feel the same way, we act the same way. If we are contemplating that You are lovesick over Your children, that You are deeply invested and committed, then we need to consider whether our hearts are aimed in the same direction. Or if often times we are users, not deeply lovesick with the one that we love but infatuated with what we might get. Reveal our hearts to us Lord, that we might change. We pray this in the precious and mighty name of Jesus. Amen.

Prayer and Encouragements:

Hey guys, this is Bridget from New York City. I want to pray for Natalie from North Carolina. I just listened to everyone else’s prayer request, and I just felt led to pray for you, for your marriage, for your community. You know, being a mom and a wife and feeling alone, while you’re really truly not is one of the hardest things to really experience. I remember that. So, I just want to lift you up. And Lord, I just ask You, Father God, first and foremost, to speak to Natalie’s husbands’ heart, Lord God. That, Father, though he may work and have to travel, Father, I pray that You would continuously put his wife, in his heart, Lord. That he would call her, that he would text her, that he would send sweet nothings to her, Father God. I pray, Lord, that You would give her community, Father God. That You would surround her Father, introduce her to women that are in similar situations, women that can pray alongside her, women that can encourage her, women that can be a friend to her, Father God. And that Lord, she we would just remember, Lord, that Your word says that You never leave us, nor forsake us. And though she may feel alone, Father God, or feel discouraged Father God, that she would take time as Mary did and sit at Your feet and know that as she sits and as she waits and as she listens, God, that You are ever present with her Lord. That she may sense Your Spirit, just encouraging her. In Jesus name I pray for you my sister, have a good….

Good morning, Daily Audio Bible brothers and sisters. This is Sylvia from South Texas. I’m calling in to request prayers for all the people that live with alcoholics. I know what a hard life that is. I pray that everyone that is suffering this, will go to God and ask the Lord to touch the alcoholics hearts. And that they realize how much hurt and pain they’re bringing their families. I am one of those people that sit in silence, watching my husband go down with his choice of drinking, instead of being with the family. Just pray for everyone …

Hey DAB this is Nate in Washington. I’m requesting some prayer from the community today mostly for my wife. I am a recovering sex addict. And by God’s grace my wife is still with me. We’ve been together for about 10 years now and the majority of that time I have really just been lost in my addiction. More recently, I’ve really stepped into the battle of trying to recover from this and stop my unhealthy habits and it’s…it’s just been such a struggle. And I just really need to, I need God’s help to understand my wife’s pain; pain of the betrayal that I’ve done. I really need to, I just, I need, I pray for God to reveal himself to me. I know He’s the only way that I’m going to be free of this. And I, He has, it’s just when I talk to my wife, there’s still that betrayal, there’s no trust, which is understandable. But I, I’m just really, I know that prayers, God can do anything. So, I thought I would reach out and see if I could get more people involved in talking to God and see if I can really gain some real ground on this, by God’s grace and with his power.

Hey DAB family, this is Beloved in Texas, Sparky’s wife. I’ve kind of been MIA for a while. I’ve been listening, trying to catch up. I just wanted to come on and ask you all for prayer. I love my new job, but it does come with a lot of responsibilities. We’ve also had some financial setbacks that have been causing me some stress. And I just, I have been managing my anxiety and my bi-polar disorder, pretty well. Until recently and now it’s kind of like, the cork popped off the bottle and I’m spewing emotions everywhere. And I don’t, none of my regular coping mechanisms are working and I really don’t know how to handle this. And I don’t want to be this person whose either awake and agitated and angry or volatile and asleep all the time because I don’t know how else to shut my brain off. I just kind of feel like I’ve, I’ve hit a point where I’ve just crashed. And physically, er, earthly I know that’s inevitable when you have bipolar disorder. And it’s not that I don’t have faith that God can get me through this or that He could heal me. It’s just I don’t know how to get through this. I don’t know how to not be so tired of trying so hard to be okay. So, if you could pray for my family, I would really appreciate it. Thank you.

Hello Daily Audio Bible family, this is Kathryn calling from Maryland. I just want to call and thank you, Hands to Heaven for your beautiful prayer for the truckers. All those who serve us, bring things to us that we need. I hope that every, every traveler and trucker like that and is able to go to the transcript section, print it out and read that every day when you’re on the road. And I join you in lifting you up and praying for your safety, for your faith to deepen in those moments alone and for the opportunity for you to share that faith with others. I also want to lift up LOV and Kingdom Seeker Daniel; it was nice to hear your testimony. And you know, God can turn things for good that we initially don’t see. And that sounds like that what’s happened with you. So, pray for your marriage, pray for your love for each other, which has always been very inspiring. Joyful spirits. And wish that you can stay, stay together, stay in love, stay with the three chords, the two of you and God. Lifting up all those with long COVID and those caring for them and surrounding them as well.

Amen.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Wednesday September 7, 2022 (NIV)

Song of Solomon 5-8

[ GROOM ]

My bride, my sister, I will come to my garden.
I will gather my myrrh with my spice.
I will eat my honeycomb with my honey.
I will drink my wine with my milk.
Eat, my friends!
Drink and become intoxicated with expressions of love!

The Young Woman Dreams of Marriage with Her Husband

[ BRIDE ]

I sleep, but my mind is awake.
Listen! My beloved is knocking.

[ GROOM ]

Open to me, my true love, my sister,
my dove, my perfect one.
My head is wet with dew,
my hair with the dewdrops of night.

[ BRIDE ]

I have taken off my clothes! Why should I put them on ⌞again⌟?
I have washed my feet! Why should I get them dirty ⌞again⌟?
My beloved put his hand through the keyhole.
My heart throbbed for him.
I got up to open for my beloved.
My hands dripped with myrrh,
and my fingers were drenched with liquid myrrh,
on the handles of the lock.
I opened for my beloved,
but my beloved had turned away. He was gone!
I almost died when he left.
I looked for him, but I did not find him.
I called for him, but he did not answer me.
The watchmen making their rounds in the city found me.
They struck me!
They wounded me!
Those watchmen on the walls took my robe from me!

Young women of Jerusalem, swear to me
that if you find my beloved
you will tell him I am hopelessly lovesick.

[ THE CHORUS OF YOUNG WOMEN ]

Most beautiful of women,
what makes your beloved better than any other beloved?
What makes your beloved better than any other beloved
that you make us swear this way?

[ BRIDE ]

10 My beloved is dazzling yet ruddy.
He stands out among 10,000 men.
11 His head is the finest gold.
His hair is wavy, black as a raven.
12 His eyes are set like doves bathing in milk.
13 His cheeks are like a garden of spices,
a garden that produces scented herbs.
His lips are lilies that drip with myrrh.
14 His hands are disks of gold set with emerald.
His chest is a block of ivory covered with sapphires.
15 His legs are columns of marble set on bases of pure gold.
His form is like Lebanon, choice as the cedars.
16 His mouth is sweet in every way.
Everything about him is desirable!
This is my beloved, and this is my friend, young women of Jerusalem.

[ THE CHORUS OF YOUNG WOMEN ]

Where did your beloved go, most beautiful of women?
Where did your beloved turn?
We will look for him with you.

[ BRIDE ]

My beloved went to his garden,
to the beds of spices,
to graze his flock in the gardens and gather lilies.
I am my beloved’s, and my beloved is mine.
He is the one who grazes his flock among the lilies.

Solomon Desires the Young Woman More Than the Rest of His Wives

[ GROOM ]

You are beautiful, my true love, like Tirzah,
lovely like Jerusalem,
awe-inspiring like those great cities.[a]
Turn your eyes away from me. They enchant me!

Your hair is like a flock of goats moving down from Gilead.
Your teeth are like a flock of sheep,
sheep that come up from the washing.
All of them bear twins, and not one has lost its young.
Your temples behind your veil are like slices of pomegranate.

There are 60 queens, 80 concubines,[b] and countless virgins,
but she is unique, my dove, my perfect one.
Her mother thinks she is unique.
She is pure to the one who gave birth to her.
Her sisters saw her and blessed her.
Queens and concubines saw her and praised her.

The Young Woman’s Home in Shulam

[ THE CHORUS OF YOUNG WOMEN ]

10 Who is this young woman?
She looks like the dawn.
She is beautiful like the moon,
pure like the sun,
awe-inspiring like those heavenly bodies.

[ BRIDE ]

11 I went to the walnut grove
to look at the blossoms in the valley,
to see if the grapevine had budded
and if the pomegranates were in bloom.
12 I did not know that I had become
like the chariots of my noble people.[c]

[ THE CHORUS OF YOUNG WOMEN ]

13 Come back! Come back, young woman from Shulam!
Come back! Come back so that we may look at you!

[ BRIDE ]

Why do you look at me, the young woman from Shulam,
as you look at the dance of Mahanaim?

[ THE CHORUS OF YOUNG WOMEN ]

[d]How beautiful are your feet in their sandals, noble daughter!
The curves of your thighs are like ornaments,
like the work of an artist’s hands.
Your navel is a round bowl.
May it always be filled with spiced wine.
Your waist is a bundle of wheat enclosed in lilies.
Your breasts are like two fawns,
twins of a gazelle.
Your neck is like an ivory tower.
Your eyes are like pools in Heshbon, pools by the gate of Bath Rabbim.
Your nose is like a Lebanese tower facing Damascus.
You hold your head as high as Mount Carmel.
Your dangling curls are royal beauty.
Your flowing locks could hold a king captive.

Solomon Longs for the Young Woman’s Affection

[ GROOM ]

How beautiful and charming you are, my love, with your elegance.
Young woman,
your figure is like a palm tree,
and your breasts are like its clusters.
I thought, “I will climb the palm tree
and take hold of its fruit.”
May your breasts be like clusters on the vine.
May the fragrance of your breath be like apples.
May your mouth taste like the best wine …

[ BRIDE ]

… that goes down smoothly to my beloved
and glides over the lips of those about to sleep.[e]
10 I am my beloved’s, and he longs for me.
11 Come, my beloved.
Let’s go into the field.
Let’s spend the night among the henna flowers.[f]
12 Let’s go to the vineyards early.
Let’s see if the vines have budded,
if the grape blossoms have opened,
if the pomegranates are in bloom.
There I will give you my love.
13 The mandrakes [g] give off a fragrance,
and at our door are all kinds of precious fruits.
I have saved new and old things
for you alone, my beloved.
If only you were my brother,
one who nursed at my mother’s breasts.
If I saw you on the street,
I would kiss you, and no one would look down on me.
I would lead you.
I would bring you into my mother’s house.
(She is the one who was my teacher.)
I would give you some spiced wine to drink,
some juice squeezed from my pomegranates.
His left hand is under my head.
His right hand caresses me.

Young women of Jerusalem, swear to me
that you will not awaken love
or arouse love before its proper time!

The Young Woman’s Love for Her Beloved

[ THE CHORUS OF YOUNG WOMEN ]

Who is this young woman coming from the wilderness
with her arm around her beloved?

[ BRIDE ]

Under the apple tree I woke you up.
There your mother went into labor with you.
There she went into labor
and gave birth to you!
Wear me as a signet ring on your heart,
as a ring on your hand.
Love is as overpowering as death.
Devotion is as unyielding as the grave.
Love’s flames are flames of fire,
flames that come from the Lord.
Raging water cannot extinguish love,
and rivers will never wash it away.
If a man exchanged all his family’s wealth for love,
people would utterly despise him.

The Young Woman with Her Family and Her Beloved

[ THE BROTHERS ]

We have a little sister, and she has no breasts.
What will we do for our sister on the day she becomes engaged?
If she is a wall, we will build a silver barrier around her.
If she is a door, we will barricade her with cedar boards.

[ BRIDE ]

10 I am a wall, and my breasts are like towers.
So he considers me to be one who has found peace.[h]
11 Solomon had a vineyard at Baal Hamon.
He entrusted that vineyard to caretakers.
Each one was to bring 25 pounds of silver
in exchange for its fruit.
12 My own vineyard is in front of me.
That 25 pounds is yours, Solomon,
and 5 pounds go to those who take care of its fruit.

[ GROOM ]

13 Young woman living in the gardens,
while your friends are listening to your voice,
let me hear….

[ BRIDE ]

14 Come away quickly, my beloved.
Run like a gazelle or a young stag
on the mountains of spices.

2 Corinthians 9

The Reason to Give to the Christians in Jerusalem

I don’t need to write anything further to you about helping the Christians ⌞in Jerusalem⌟. I know how willing you are to help, and I brag about you to the believers in the province of Macedonia. I tell them, “The people of Greece have been ready ⌞to send their collection⌟ since last year,” and your enthusiasm has moved most of them ⌞to act⌟. I’ve sent my coworkers so that when we brag that you’re ready, we can back it up. Otherwise, if any Macedonians come with me, they might find out that you’re not ready after all. This would embarrass us for feeling so confident as much as it would embarrass you. So I thought that I should encourage our coworkers to visit you before I do and make arrangements for this gift that you had already promised to give. Then it will be the blessing it was intended to be, and it won’t be something you’re forced to do.

Remember this: The farmer who plants a few seeds will have a very small harvest. But the farmer who plants because he has received God’s blessings will receive a harvest of God’s blessings in return. Each of you should give whatever you have decided. You shouldn’t be sorry that you gave or feel forced to give, since God loves a cheerful giver. Besides, God will give you his constantly overflowing kindness.[a] Then, when you always have everything you need, you can do more and more good things. Scripture says,

“The person with God’s approval gives freely to the poor.
The things he does with God’s approval continue forever.”

10 God gives seed to the farmer and food to those who need to eat. God will also give you seed and multiply it. In your lives he will increase the things you do that have his approval. 11 God will make you rich enough so that you can always be generous. Your generosity will produce thanksgiving to God because of us. 12 What you do to serve others not only provides for the needs of God’s people, but also produces more and more prayers of thanksgiving to God. 13 You will honor God through this genuine act of service because of your commitment to spread the Good News of Christ and because of your generosity in sharing with them and everyone else. 14 With deep affection they will pray for you because of the extreme kindness that God has shown you. 15 I thank God for his gift that words cannot describe.

Psalm 51

For the choir director; a psalm by David when the prophet Nathan came to him after David’s adultery with Bathsheba.

51 Have pity on me, O God, in keeping with your mercy.
In keeping with your unlimited compassion, wipe out my rebellious acts.
Wash me thoroughly from my guilt,
and cleanse me from my sin.
I admit that I am rebellious.
My sin is always in front of me.
I have sinned against you, especially you.
I have done what you consider evil.
So you hand down justice when you speak,
and you are blameless when you judge.

Indeed, I was born guilty.
I was a sinner when my mother conceived me.
Yet, you desire truth and sincerity.
Deep down inside me you teach me wisdom.
Purify me from sin with hyssop,[a] and I will be clean.[b]
Wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.
Let me hear ⌞sounds of⌟ joy and gladness.
Let the bones that you have broken dance.
Hide your face from my sins,
and wipe out all that I have done wrong.

10 Create a clean heart in me, O God,
and renew a faithful spirit within me.
11 Do not force me away from your presence,
and do not take your Holy Spirit from me.
12 Restore the joy of your salvation to me,
and provide me with a spirit of willing obedience.

13 ⌞Then⌟ I will teach your ways to those who are rebellious,
and sinners will return to you.
14 Rescue me from the guilt of murder,
O God, my savior.
Let my tongue sing joyfully about your righteousness!
15 O Lord, open my lips,
and my mouth will tell about your praise.
16 You are not happy with any sacrifice.
Otherwise, I would offer one ⌞to you⌟.
You are not pleased with burnt offerings.
17 The sacrifice pleasing to God is a broken spirit.
O God, you do not despise a broken and sorrowful heart.
18 Favor Zion with your goodness.
Rebuild the walls of Jerusalem.
19 Then you will be pleased with sacrifices offered in the right spirit—
with burnt offerings and whole burnt offerings.
Young bulls will be offered on your altar.

Proverbs 22:24-25

24 Do not be a friend of one who has a bad temper,
and never keep company with a hothead,
25 or you will learn his ways
and set a trap for yourself.

Song of Solomon 1-4

The most beautiful song of Solomon.

The Young Woman Arrives in Solomon’s Palace

[ BRIDE ]

Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth.
Your expressions of love are better than wine,
better than the fragrance of cologne.
(Cologne should be named after you.)
No wonder the young women love you!
Take me with you. Let’s run away.
The king has brought me into his private rooms.

[ THE CHORUS OF YOUNG WOMEN ]

We will celebrate and rejoice with you.
We will praise your expressions of love more than wine.
How right it is that the young women love you!

[ BRIDE ]

Young women of Jerusalem, I am dark and lovely
like Kedar’s tents,
like Solomon’s curtains.
Stop staring at me because I am so dark.
The sun has tanned me.
My brothers were angry with me.
They made me the caretaker of the vineyards.
I have not even taken care of my own vineyard.
Please tell me, you whom I love, where do you graze your flock?
Where does your flock lie down at noon?
⌞Tell me,⌟ or I will be considered a prostitute
⌞wandering⌟ among the flocks of your companions.

[ THE CHORUS OF YOUNG WOMEN ]

If you do not know, most beautiful of women,
follow the tracks of the flocks,
and graze your young goats near the shepherds’ tents.

Solomon Searches for the Young Woman’s Love

[ GROOM ]

My true love, I compare you to a mare among Pharaoh’s stallions.
10 Your cheeks are lovely with ornaments,
your neck with strings of pearls.

[ THE CHORUS OF YOUNG WOMEN ]

11 We will make gold ornaments with silver beads for you.

[ BRIDE ]

12 While the king is at his table,
my perfume fills the air with its fragrance.
13 My beloved is a pouch of myrrh [a]
that lies at night between my breasts.
14 My beloved is a bouquet of henna flowers
in the vineyards of En Gedi.

[ GROOM ]

15 Look at you! You are beautiful, my true love!
Look at you! You are so beautiful!
Your eyes are like doves!

[ BRIDE ]

16 Look at you! You are handsome, my beloved, so pleasing to me!
The leaf-scattered ground will be our couch.
17 The cedars will be the walls of our house.
The cypress trees will be our rafters.
I am a rose of Sharon,
a lily ⌞growing⌟ in the valleys.

[ GROOM ]

Like a lily among thorns,
so is my true love among the young women.

[ BRIDE ]

Like an apple tree among the trees in the forest,
so is my beloved among the young men.
I want to sit in his shadow.
His fruit tastes sweet to me.
He leads me into a banquet room
and looks at me with love.
Strengthen me with raisins
and refresh me with apples
because I am weak from love.
His left hand is under my head.
His right hand caresses me.

Young women of Jerusalem, swear to me
by the gazelles
or by the does in the field
that you will not awaken love
or arouse love before its proper time.

The Young Woman Remembers One Spring Day with Her Beloved

[ BRIDE ]

I hear my beloved’s voice.
Look! Here he comes,
sprinting over the mountains,
racing over the hills.
My beloved is like a gazelle or a young stag.
Look! There he stands behind our wall,
peeking through the window,
looking through the lattice.
10 My beloved said to me,
“Get up, my true love, my beautiful one, and come with me.
11 Look! The winter is past.
The rain is over and gone.
12 Blossoms appear in the land.
The time of the songbird has arrived.
The cooing of the mourning dove is heard in our land.
13 The green figs ripen.
The grapevines bloom and give off a fragrance.
Get up, my true love, my beautiful one, and come with me.
14 My dove, in the hiding places of the rocky crevices,
in the secret places of the cliffs,
let me see your figure and hear your voice.
Your voice is sweet, and your figure is lovely.”

15 Catch the foxes for us,
the little foxes that ruin vineyards.
Our vineyards are blooming.

16 My beloved is mine, and I am his.
He is the one who grazes his flock among the lilies.
17 When the day brings a cooling breeze and the shadows flee,
turn around, my beloved.
Run like a gazelle or a young stag
on the mountains that separate us!

The Young Woman Dreams about Searching for Her Beloved

[ BRIDE ]

Night after night on my bed
I looked for the one I love.
I looked for him but did not find him.
I will get up now and roam around the city,
in the streets, and in the squares.
I will look for the one I love.
I looked for him but did not find him.
The watchmen making their rounds in the city found me.
⌞I asked,⌟ “Have you seen the one I love?”
I had just left them when I found the one I love.
I held on to him and would not let him go
until I had brought him into my mother’s house,
into the bedroom of the one who conceived me.

Young women of Jerusalem, swear to me
by the gazelles
or by the does in the field,
that you will not awaken love
or arouse love before its proper time.

A Description of the Royal Procession

[ THE CHORUS OF YOUNG WOMEN ]

Who is this young woman coming up from the wilderness
like clouds of smoke?
She is perfumed with myrrh and incense
made from the merchants’ scented powders.
Look! Solomon’s sedan chair! [b]
Sixty soldiers from the army of Israel surround it.
All of them are skilled in using swords,
experienced in combat.
Each one has his sword at his side
and guards against the terrors of the night.
King Solomon had a carriage made for himself
from the wood of Lebanon.
10 He had its posts made out of silver,
its top out of gold,
its seat out of purple fabric.
Its inside—with inlaid scenes of love—
was made by the young women of Jerusalem.
11 Young women of Zion, come out and look at King Solomon!
Look at his crown,
the crown his mother placed on him on his wedding day,
his day of joyful delight.

Solomon Is Charmed by the Young Woman

[GROOM ]

Look at you! You are beautiful, my true love.
Look at you! You are so beautiful.
Your eyes behind your veil are like doves.
Your hair is like a flock of goats moving down Mount Gilead.
Your teeth are like a flock of sheep about to be sheared,
sheep that come up from the washing.
All of them bear twins, and not one has lost its young.
Your lips are like scarlet thread.
Your mouth is lovely.
Your temples behind your veil are like slices of pomegranate.
Your neck is like David’s beautifully-designed tower.
A thousand round shields belonging to soldiers
are hung on it.
Your breasts are like two fawns,
like twin gazelles grazing among the lilies.
When the day brings a cool breeze and the shadows flee,
I will go to the mountain of myrrh and the hill of incense.
You are beautiful in every way, my true love.
There is no blemish on you.
You will come with me from Lebanon,
from Lebanon as my bride.
You will travel with me
from the peak of Mount Amana,
from the mountain peaks in Senir and Hermon,
from the lairs of lions,
from the mountains of leopards.
My bride, my sister, you have charmed me.[c]
You have charmed me
with a single glance from your eyes,
with a single strand of your necklace.
10 How beautiful are your expressions of love, my bride, my sister!
How much better are your expressions of love than wine
and the fragrance of your perfume than any spice.
11 Your lips drip honey, my bride.
Honey and milk are under your tongue.
The fragrance of your clothing is like the fragrance of Lebanon.
12 My bride, my sister is a garden that is locked,
a garden that is locked,
a spring that is sealed.
13 You are paradise that produces
pomegranates and the best fruits,
henna flowers and nard,
14 nard and saffron,
calamus,[d] cinnamon, and all kinds of incense,[e]
myrrh, aloes, and all the best spices.
15 ⌞You are⌟ a spring for gardens,
a well of living water flowing from Lebanon.

[ BRIDE ]

16 Awake, north wind!
Come, south wind!
Blow on my garden!
Let its spices flow from it.
Let my beloved come to his garden,
and let him eat his own precious fruit.

2 Corinthians 8:16-24

16 I thank God for making Titus as dedicated to you as I am. 17 He accepted my request and eagerly went to visit you by his own free will.

18 With him we have sent our Christian brother whom all the churches praise for the way he tells the Good News. 19 More than that, the churches elected him to travel with us and bring this gift of God’s kindness. We are administering it in a way that brings glory to the Lord and shows that we are doing it willingly. 20 We don’t want anyone to find fault with the way we are administering this generous gift. 21 We intend to do what is right, not only in the sight of the Lord, but also in the sight of people.

22 We have also sent with them our Christian brother whom we have often tested in many ways and found to be a dedicated worker. We find that he is much more dedicated now than ever because he has so much confidence in you.

23 If any questions are raised, remember that Titus is my partner and coworker to help you. The other men are representatives of the churches and bring glory to Christ. 24 So give these men a demonstration of your love. Show their congregations that we were right to be proud of you.

Psalm 50

A psalm by Asaph.

50 The Lord, the only true God, has spoken.
He has summoned the earth
from where the sun rises to where it sets.
God shines from Zion,
the perfection of beauty.
Our God will come and will not remain silent.
A devouring fire is in front of him
and a raging storm around him.
He summons heaven and earth to judge his people:
“Gather around me, my godly people
who have made a pledge to me through sacrifices.”

The heavens announce his righteousness
because God is the judge. Selah

“Listen, my people, and I will speak.
Listen, Israel, and I will testify against you:
I am God, your God!
I am not criticizing you for your sacrifices or burnt offerings,
which are always in front of me.
⌞But⌟ I will not accept ⌞another⌟ young bull from your household
or a single male goat from your pens.
10 Every creature in the forest,
⌞even⌟ the cattle on a thousand hills, is mine.
11 I know every bird in the mountains.
Everything that moves in the fields is mine.
12 If I were hungry, I would not tell you,
because the world and all that it contains are mine.
13 Do I eat the meat of bulls or drink the blood of goats?
14 Bring ⌞your⌟ thanks to God as a sacrifice,
and keep your vows to the Most High.
15 Call on me in times of trouble.
I will rescue you, and you will honor me.”

16 But God says to wicked people,
“How dare you quote my decrees
and mouth my promises! [a]
17 You hate discipline.
You toss my words behind you.
18 When you see a thief, you want to make friends with him.
You keep company with people who commit adultery.
19 You let your mouth say anything evil.
Your tongue plans deceit.
20 You sit and talk against your own brother.
You slander your own mother’s son.
21 When you did these things, I remained silent.
⌞That⌟ made you think I was like you.
I will argue my point with you
and lay it all out for you to see.
22 Consider this, you people who forget God.
Otherwise, I will tear you to pieces,
and there will be no one left to rescue you.
23 Whoever offers thanks as a sacrifice honors me.
I will let everyone who continues in my way
see the salvation that comes from God.”

Proverbs 22:22-23

Living with Your Neighbor

22 Do not rob the poor because they are poor
or trample on the rights of an oppressed person at the city gate,
23 because the Lord will plead their case
and will take the lives of those who rob them.
