2 Chronicles 1:1-3:17, Romans 6:1-23, Psalms 16:1-11, Proverbs 19:20-21

Today’s the 20^th…I was gonna say 21^st. Sorry. We are at the 20^th of day of July. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian it is good to be here with you today as we end another of our weeks together. And we just keep pushing, one day at a time, day by day through all of the Bible which brings us to the fact that we finished the book of first Chronicles yesterday and we will enter the book of second Chronicles today.

Introduction to the book of second Chronicles:

And there’s not a lot to say about second Chronicles that we haven’t already said about first Chronicles because these were one contiguous text at one time other than just like first and second Kings, first Kings ends with the death of David and then second Kings kind of begins with Solomon’s reign. Chronicles is similar. We read of Solomon ascending to the throne yesterday and David’s charged to him about building the temple of God and David passed into history. So, with second Chronicles we begin with King Solomon’s reign. We’ve been reading from the New Living Translation this week, which is what we’ll do today. Second Chronicles chapters 1, 2, and 3.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word, we thank You for another week together in Your word, and as we continue to move forward through the book of Romans we are seeing the good news of the gospel laid out in plain text and we thank You for this, and we ask Holy Spirit that we not just move through this and be like, “yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, I know” because we don’t know. The implications of what You’ve done for us are earth shifting, they are monumental colossal changes that are supposed to colossally irreversibly change us. And, so, if we kind of look in the mirror and say, “yeah, I’m kind of struggling with all of the old sin. I am still a slave to that”, well, then we are not living the good news of the gospel and all of the benefits and all of the blessings that come with it. So, help us Holy Spirit to get our minds off of all the chaos and responsibility and obligation and all of the things that are going on in our personal lives, all the things that are going on in our world and to get our hearts and minds focused on You so that we walk through this world with You in it but not of it. Come Holy Spirit we pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hi Daily Audio Bible family, this is Diane Wyan and I wanted to call in today to pray for the woman who called in but did not leave a name, but she had left her job and was living with a man who is sexually abusing her, and she did not feel she had any way out. I prayed a long time to Jesus sister to try to find the right words to help you but I just felt like they couldn’t find any that I thought did justice. Ironically, my husband who is not a Christian, told me a story that I think might be the Holy Spirit just trying to relay a message to you. My husband told me that he had read an archaeology article about a big stone cross in Europe that sits in the middle of the forest. He said that the article is saying that there used to be stone crosses everywhere around Europe in the middle of the most unlikely places and that these crosses were placed there to help people who are lost, in danger in some way or another, and that the crosses were pointing the direction to help, to good Samaritans, to the people of the church. Sister, right now I think you’re in the middle of the deep dark forest and you’re in a lot of trouble but there’s a big stone cross pointing the direction toward safety and goodness for you. Run toward that cross, sister. Surely, there has to be a Christian organization near you that can provide you with help and get you to safety. Don’t give up sister. I love you. I ask that the Lord guide you and protect you and that he send a sheltering angel to embrace you safety and to take your hand and guide you to peace.

Yes, this is my first time calling. My grandson Chase, who’s 21, through no fault of his own over the years has had many, many problems in his life. So much so beginning with his mom leaving his dad when he was little when little boys needed their dads to many other problems. He’s 21 years old now, he’s never finished high school, he doesn’t have his driver’s license and partly due to him being somewhat on the on the autism spectrum he’s unable to be in social situations to hold the job for very long. He and I were very close when he was little boy and his mom because of issues of her own has kept him and his siblings from contact with me a lot over the years. I have seen him but not very often and this summer he’ll be coming to visit with his dad and then he’s staying an extra five days alone with his grandfather and I. I pray, please pray that during that time my husband and I will either be a part of a miracle for him or not harm him anymore with anything that we try to say or do. Don’t let the words of our mouths be anything but from God. Please pray for that, that we can encourage him and support him and help him see that he is a worthwhile God’s child and keep us from saying or doing anything that would mess that up. I’ve prayed for him since he was a tiny, tiny baby and he needs a miracle in his life and I love him so much. Thank you for your prayers. Goodbye.

Yes, hi Brian, hello everybody out there. I just…I was calling because I’m a in great need of prayer. I have been listening to Daily Audio Bible for some time off and on since I actually went to…I’m a part of the International House of Prayer and…in Kansas City. I just…right now I’m going through an extremely hard time. I had fallen away from the Lord for about five or more years…five and a half years in my marriage. I don’t know how it happened to be honest with you…just kind of slow progression…went through a lot of trauma in my life in the past and I thought I was completely healed when I got married and just went through a time where I just I’d lost a lot of myself about three years ago or about two…two and a half years ago both my parents died about seven months apart from each other. After that my wife had left me with my children. I had sought the Lord, tried to get back with the Lord at that time. My wife came back. It had been about now about a year and a half and almost a year and a half and then about three weeks ago about two and half weeks ago actually she left me again. This time saying it’s going to be for good and she took my kids to Iowa to her parents. I actually had no idea it was going to happen. I thought things were getting better. It actually just came out of nowhere. Her parents came here on vacation to celebrate my youngest…well actually he’s my two-year-old. We actually have another…another child on the way. My wife’s pregnant actually with a baby girl. So we have actually three children if you will and it was the two-year-old’s birthday and not long after I had that I had no idea that they…

Hi DABbers, this is Candy from Northern California, haven’t called a long time but oh my goodness. The post from the woman who has been battered, oh my goodness, I just heard it. I am so moved. Please, please plug into a church. Find a support group. There are support groups in churches that can help you and there are kind people who will likely find you a place. Please reach out, plug into your Christian community. And for the father who lost a baby, oh my goodness. So many of us are so, so sorry for your loss as you know I had years as a NICU nurse and unfortunately, I have been up close and personal with this kind of grief. For you also, please, reach out to support groups who have been where you are now trotting when you’re ready that is. You know, only faith can make sense of these kinds of tragedies. And friends, personally, I, you know, I am almost embarrassed to ask it but I, I have an opportunity coming up. I’m being considered for kind of missions…a very godly business opportunity. It would be a dream come true for me and if it happens, I’ll let you know but in the meantime I’m just asking that you pray for this opportunity to bless…to bless other people in a special way. 1 Chronicles 28:1-29:30, Romans 5:6-21, Psalms 15:1-5, Proverbs 19:18-19

Today is the 19^th day of July. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian and it’s always great to be here with you. So, it’s great to be here with you today as we as close down a workweek, move ourselves toward the weekend. We’ll be concluding the book of first Chronicles today with our Old Testament reading. So, let's…let’s begin. We’re reading from the New Living Translation this week. First Chronicles chapters 28 and 29.

Commentary:

Okay. So, in the book of Romans, Paul…Paul writes, “when we were utterly helpless, Christ came at just the right time.” And we can just…we could…maybe even should just sit there and…and consider the implications. Like, the absolute relief of that statement being true changes everything because it’s not just describing salvation it’s the context of our lives. When we were helpless Jesus came. And, so, this is where Paul’s focusing as we continue through this letter, essentially telling us that God has invited us to be in a relationship with him. Again, we’ve got to stop. It’s like we say this stuff all of the time. We are talking about the Almighty God, who has invited us to be in a relationship even while we were completely His enemies. So, let me not put it in my words, let’s just read it from the Bible. “Since our friendship with God was restored by the death of His son while we were still His enemies we will certainly be saved through the life of His son. So, now we can rejoice in our wonderful new relationship with God because our Lord Jesus Christ has made us friends of God.” I mean, come on! This is such good news! And then Paul talked about the law and he talks about the law a lot because it’s something that he understood, and he also understood what it represented in the Hebrew culture. And, so, he talks about it a lot and he says, “it was a way, it was given to reveal, essentially how far away we had drifted from God and how deep the chasm actually was.” So, without the law there’s no way to gauge that, there’s no way to know that we had…we had it so backward, but with the law we could finally see our helplessness to achieve perfection on our own. We could finally see like, no we can’t get there from here, we don’t have the power. And that was the purpose of the law, to show us our desperate need for God. And then in the person of Jesus, God in the flesh we saw God’s passion to meet that need. So, I mean, Romans is a highly theological book, but I mean, the underlying reality underneath that theology, yeah, we…we should be…we should be humbled. God didn’t need to do any of this. He didn’t need to care. Like, once we had gone our own way, He could’ve just washed His hands of us and made new people on some new planet. Like, God doesn’t owe us anything and we…we made and we continue to make choices that if they run their course, they’re going to lead to our destruction. We can’t be our own God. Even though we try it all of the time, we are not equipped to be God. So, according Paul the laws given so that we can we can see the direction that we we’re headed in and that we can wake up, we could see the direction that we’re headed in and become aware of where that’s can end up. When we realize it’s hopeless and we are helpless to do anything about it then we begin to see how overwhelming God’s love is. So profound that even when we were His enemies, He wouldn’t give up on us. He would not allow us to pass into the darkness, which basically leads us back to where we started. When we were absolutely helpless Jesus came at just the right time. So, let’s take some time today to think about how massive this is as we move into the weekend, not only in our own lives but for…but for all of humanity. So, no matter what circumstances we’re facing, no matter what kind of chaos is swirling around us, as we read the book of Romans all we can come to conclude is that we absolutely assuredly have a good Father.

Prayer:

Father, You are good, and Your mercy endures forever, and Your mercy reaches out to us even when we are alienated or estranged from You. Your kindness reaches toward us even when we are Your enemy. This is beyond comprehension. We don’t have the capacity to do that. We can live into that by the power of Your Holy Spirit, and that is what sanctification is doing within us, but on our own it’s hard to even comprehend the kind of love that were talking about here. This is good news. And, so, we receive this good news. We love You, we thank You for Your kindness, we thank You that You came for us and would not let us be destroyed by the darkness. So, we worship You and we pray these things in the mighty name of Jesus our Savior. Amen.

1 Chronicles 26:12-27:34, Romans 4:13-5:5, Psalms 14:1-7, Proverbs 19:17

Today is the 18^th day of July. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian. It is my pleasure and it is a joy to be here with you today and just move into the Scriptures and just move out of all the entanglements, all of the things that, you know, knot our stomachs and anxiety, all the responsibilities and obligations that are swirling at us. This is a moment to step away and let God re-center us in His word and give us counsel and direction for our lives. So, it is certainly a joy to be here with you today as we take the next step forward. We’re reading from the New Living Translation this week and the next step forward will take us back into the book of first Chronicles. Today, chapter 26 verse 12 through 27 verse 34.

Commentary:

Alright. So, as we spent some time going through the book of Romans and just really seeing some of the foundational pieces of our faith explained we’ve also mentioned that this controversial stuff that Paul’s saying at the time, pretty disruptive. And, so, we have to imagine this for Paul because Paul was a pharisee, he was trained in this. So, you can only imagine the kind of disruption that had previously happened in his life in order to arrive at this place. I mean any kind of revolution, especially in matters of faith are usually unsettling experiences. So, it’s not surprising that we’re seeing Paul reframe faith and the Hebrew experience of faith by going back to the beginning as opposed to starting somewhere in the middle. And this is why we find ourselves exploring Abraham again because Abraham is the first person associated with the Hebrew story. And, so, thus is one of the reasons Paul references Abram so often in his teachings and why it’s so important and like foundational to what he’s saying. So, in today’s reading from Romans, Paul continued to discuss Abraham’s life and he’s doing this so that his position or his argument between a life of faith and a life trying to obey a law could be clear. And he says, “if God’s promise is only for those who obey the law, then faith isn’t necessary and there’s no point in having a promise because the law is what brings punishment on those who try to obey”. Like, you don’t know you’ve done wrong unless there’s some sort of law to tell you that you did do wrong and then you’re punished for it. Or in Paul’s words, “the only way to avoid breaking the law is to have no law to break.” So, for Paul and for that matter for us, faith is…is the essence for interaction with God. God wants us to come to Him through faith not by trying to obey a set of rules. I know that…I mean that can disrupt us even today because we spend so much of our time trying to obey the rules and frankly so little time living by faith. So, in a lot of ways it’s not so different. And Paul’s point was that if those who were reading this letter, if they would just go back to their own beginning story, the origin of it all and just look at what God did in the world through Abraham, then they would see that it was faith and that it was only faith that started that domino effect that created the Jewish people. And if that’s the case, which it is, then it was faith and not a law that actually held their true identity. Paul said it like this, “the promise is received by faith, it is given as a free gift and we are all certain to receive it whether or not we live according to the law of Moses as long as we have faith like Abraham’s.” So, I mean, we’re like biting this off a little bit at a time and there is so much, the book of Romans is no dense with things to contemplate that it it’s worth spending some of your own times just really trying to understand what’s being said here. But if you want to take something away from this and move into our day it’s that all of the hoops that we’re trying to jump through to get God’s attention so that He will answer our prayers whatever they might be, that’s never been the way it works, which is not to say, “well that’s a relief. Finally, I don’t really have to pay attention to anything that I do. I just have to have faith.” That’s not how it works in either. Faith transforms us and transforms the way that we think about things. And when the way that we think and understand things has shifted then our behavior shifts as well. So, may we live by faith today

Prayer:

Jesus, that’s really poignant as easy as it is to dismiss because it’s something that we hear often, and it is something we hear all the time. So, it’s easy to just to not even hear but we’re hearing it. We must live by faith, which means we must reach into the dark and see what we cannot see, and we cannot do that without the guidance of your Holy Spirit. And, so, come Holy Spirit, give us eyes to see and ears to hear as we reach in faith and live our faith today. Come Holy Spirit we pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.

1 Chronicles 24:1-26:11, Romans 4:1-12, Psalms 13:1-6, Proverbs 19:15-16

Today’s the 17^th day of July. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian and it’s wonderful, as it is every day, a joy that we can come together like this isn’t it? That we can come together and step away from things for a few minutes and be together in God’s word. That is a joy. So, it’s a joy to be here with you as we take the next step through our week and next step forward in the Scriptures. We’re reading from the New Living Translation this week and we’re nearing the end of our journey through first Chronicles. Today we’ll read chapter 24 verse 1 through 26 verse 11.

Commentary:

Okay. So, in the book of Romans, the letter that Paul wrote to the Romans, we’re seeing Paul do some deconstruction about certain aspects of his Jewish faith. And, I mean, it may not seem that way now but the stuff that he’s saying in the book of Romans at the time is very controversial stuff, but he wasn’t trying to like dismantle or just like do away with his reverence for Judaism. He wasn’t actually trying to get anybody’s reverence for Judaism obliterated or anything like that. He was trying to reframe the story and bring Jesus into the store and show how this has always been there. And this is why Paul was in the hotseat all the time. This stuff that we’re reading, this is like a very like outlawed kind of book for the Hebrew people at the time. And what Paul is trying to reframe at its essence was about whether a person could earn their way into God’s favor by their own obedience to the Mosaic law, which is an idea that was deeply embedded into the Hebrew culture, or whether there was another way. So, Paul was kinda saying out loud what they had been wrestling with for a long time because nobody could obey the law perfectly. And, so, what to do? And this is pretty big reframe indeed what Paul is saying because the Jews believed that their adherence to the law wasn’t just about an exclusive Hebrew religion, but also this was the path that would save them. So, Paul’s message is pretty disruptive if that’s what…if that’s what you believe. And what we’re seeing Paul start to do is make a distinction between Abraham and Moses. The law came through Moses, but Abraham came way before Moses and he was the one who received the promise in the first place. So, Paul’s saying, “you’re kind of worshiping and revering Moses and the Mosaic law and that’s fine and dandy but things happened before that that we cannot forget because they are foundational.” So, Paul made reference to two people in today’s reading, that all Hebrew people would understand - Abraham and David. And he said this, “Abraham was, humanly speaking, the founder of our Jewish nation. What did he discover about being made right with God? If his good deeds had made him acceptable to God, he would’ve had something to boast about, but that wasn’t God’s way for the Scriptures tell us Abraham believed God, and God counted him as righteous because of his faith.” So, Paul’s saying like, “you’re like going nuts on this Mosaic law thing right down to circumcision. All these things are important, but let’s remember that our father Abraham was not circumcised when he put his faith in God.” So, for every man that was a Hebrew like circumcision is and irreplaceable outward sign of obedience to the law. And, so, Paul’s saying like, “when Abraham met God, he wasn’t obeying the law because there was no law to obey and he wasn’t circumcised because there was no law to tell him he should be. So, we’re trying to obey these rules and regulations and we’re overlooking the thing, like the centerpiece, the one thing that’s required in the story, faith. It was faith that Abraham had that started the story, not some attempt to obey some kind of rule as behaviors are modified. And the reason this is revolutionary is because it was revealing that righteousness before God is not something that can be achieved by like adhering to the moral code or some kind of ethic or some kind of rule. Paul’s claiming that righteous…righteousness before God is a gift from God and it can only be received by faith. In other words, it’s a gift that’s given by God and the only way to receive it is to believe that you have it, right? Like it’s not something that you’re going to end up deserving. Paul said it like this, “when people work their wages aren’t a gift. They earned those wages. But people are counted as righteous, not because of their work, but because of their faith in God who forgives sin.” And then he referenced Psalm 132. So, he’s referencing David showing that forgiveness is something to be experienced as a gift. It’s something to be experienced with joy. And, so, then Paul asks whether God might be merciful to people who were not Hebrew and were not practicing the Jewish faith. And he asks, “is this blessing only for the Jews, or is it for uncircumcised Gentiles.” And he says, “we’ve been saying that Abraham was counted as righteous by God because of his faith but how did that happen? Was he counted as righteous only after he was circumcised or was it before he was circumcised? Clearly”…I’m quoting Paul here…”God accepted Abraham before he was circumcised.” So, we’ve got a lot of conversation about circumcision, which is probably not the topic that you choose over lunch every day. But here we are, and it’s actually a really really important piece of the Hebrew faith. And Paul’s saying, “I mean circumcision yes or no has nothing to do with whether or not you can be made righteous before God. That is a faith matter.” Now where we sit now these things, we don’t hardly even pay attention to. We just take them for granted, the idea or the awareness of an inclusive gospel that is open to everyone who believes in salvation through faith. These are like embedded into our faith, into the Christian faith, just as embedded as obedience to the Mosaic law was for the Jewish people of Paul’s time, which is why this is so controversial and disruptive. And that’s where we leave off today and if we’ll take some time to just kind of meditate, just appreciate what Paul is doing here as he tries to navigate between Jew and Gentile, basically walking the middle way here and revealing Jesus in all of it we then begin to understand how the faith came to be and was handed down to us.

Prayer:

Father, we invite Your Holy Spirit into all that we’re reading in the book of Romans, because we base so much of our faith from the things that are said here. So, come Holy Spirit, reveal these things to us and allow them to sink deeper into our understanding and lead us into all truth. This is what we seek, and this is what You have promised. So, we open ourselves to You. Come Jesus we pray. In Your mighty and holy name, we ask. Amen.

And it's…it’s the family…Family Reunion that’s coming up in…in the last day…the last day of August, August 31^st through September 2^nd. So, Labor Day weekend we will be hosting a Family Reunion for the Daily Audio Bible community here in the rolling hills of Tennessee out on the lake. It's…it’s one of the most beautiful places around here for us to do an event like this. And, so, we’re looking forward to that. Looking forward to it, especially because it's…it’s sort of the end of some of the intense activity that we have maintained…I see that word…for over a decade. I mean, we’re completing year 14. This year is year 14, seven days a week and it has literally taken us all around the globe and there are certain things that we’ve have done that take months to prepare for that the Lord is just instructing us to take a break from so that we can have more space to maintain and to dream. He’s leading us into some new territory. So, we won’t be doing the More Gathering for women in 2020. We usually do that in April. And we won’t be doing the Family Reunion over Labor Day weekend in 2020. So, this is, at least for us, not…it’s not bittersweet…it’s actually very, very exciting but it’s also…you know…with the gravity of like…this is the last time we’re gonna have a big group of the community together for a little while. And, so, we want to savor that and that was one of the words that we were given over the More Gathering, “savor”, as we went into that this year, just enjoying every minute. It’s funny how your attitude changes…I mean there’s all kinds of challenges to doing large events. And, so, there’s all kinds of stuff that comes with it and it’s easy to get frantic about the details and not even enjoy the fact that it’s happening. And, so, we really were able to press in and enjoy everything about the More Gathering and that is the attitude we’re taking into the Family Reunion, to savor it, to enjoy it, to allow it to fill us up, to do everything that we can to fill each other up as we just enjoy being together in community. So, hopefully you can come. Hope you can. Looking forward to seeing your beautiful, handsome faces coming from wherever you’re coming from, and getting to know you more than just voice alone. 1 Chronicles 22:1-23:32, Romans 3:9-31, Psalms 12:1-8, Proverbs 19:13-14

Today is the 16^th day of July. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian how are you today? I hope everything is well. Things are pretty well here in the rolling hills of Tennessee. I guess we’re facing all the same kinda struggles everybody else does in their daily lives and that’s one of the reasons why we come here, why we center ourselves in God’s word, why we step away for just a few minutes to re-center ourselves in who we are because we are in relationship with our heavenly Father and we seek direction in our lives through His word. So, we’re reading from the New Living Translation this week and we’re working our way into the end of first Chronicles. We’ll actually conclude first Chronicles before we conclude this week but we’re not there yet. So, let’s set with stay here where we are. First Chronicles chapter 22 and 23 today.

Commentary:

Okay. So, as we work our way through the apostle Paul’s letters this year we’re going to find, as I’ve already mentioned, he’s fairly direct and at times the implications of what he’s saying are so astounding that it’s truly like mind-boggling me. I mean, there are things that the apostle Paul says that, if they are true, and I believe they are true, then you have to start wondering, “why do most believers not live as if they are true?” And we’ll also see why people were so upset with Paul. We go through the book of Acts or whatever and we see Paul’s ministry, and we’re like, “what’s the problem here? Like, why would people be so opposed to this guy enough to riot and to drag him out and beat him up and stone him and imprison him?” And we’ll see pretty clearly why that is. And we begin to see why that is in what he’s saying in the book of Romans today. So, we know Paul is a trained Pharisee, right, trained up in the Mosaic law and he is speaking about the Mosaic law today because, and we have got to get our minds around this, at the time Paul’s writing this there is nothing called a New Testament. Paul can’t say, “I’m referring to first Corinthians here, another letter that I wrote or I’m referring to the gospel of John here or I’m referring to James letter here.” These things have not been cohesively collected into something that we would call the New Testament. So, the Bible, if there were a thing called the Bible at this time would be the Torah, the law and then other writings called the prophets - the law and the prophets. People had put their faith in the law and in trying to perfectly obey the law, especially a person like a trained Pharisee like Saul or Paul. Paul’s reached a place where he realizes you cannot get there from here, nobody can obey the law perfectly. So, that must not be the way to become righteous before God. There must be a different purpose. And, so, Paul says, “no one can ever be made right with God by doing what the law commands. The law simply shows us how sinful we are.” So, now we can understand where Paul’s coming from but you hear this in the first century, when you don’t have Christian faith and you don’t have a New Testament and your thinking, “what are you talking…what you’re saying here?” Right? It’s very disruptive. And that’s when Paul goes on to say, “look, God’s shown us a way to be made right with Him without keeping the requirements of the law. This is promised in the writings of Moses and the prophets. Like this is not new news. This has been a thing that’s been promised. We’re made right with God by placing our faith in Jesus Christ. And this is true for everybody in the world, everybody who believes it, no matter who they are, no matter who they are, no matter who they are friends, no matter who they are.” That is like a centerpiece of the gospel of Jesus Christ. So, it would…it would seem that the people…the people who believe and have fallen in love with Jesus Christ would not forget that and maybe would stop condemning each other, would stop living into the stereotype about us, that we’re the judgmental ones, we’re the condemning ones as opposed to that we are known by our love for one another. What Paul is trying to lay out here as he will continue to lay out as we go through this letter is that you don’t deserve to be here. You do not deserve to become a child of God. Nobody deserves that. But rather than me paraphrasing, let me just read it from Paul’s letter. “Can we boast then that we have done anything to be accepted by God? No! Our acquittal isn’t based on obeying the law, it’s based on faith. We’re made right with God through faith and not by obeying the law.” So, we are all citizens of some nation, right, the nation we were born in or the nation that we immigrated to. We…most of us…are citizens of somewhere. We are expected to obey the laws of the place that we are. That’s how society is held together, but if we obey those laws more and more perfectly, we are not more and more of a citizen. We are a citizen. That’s that. If we break the laws of our land we will…we will likely pay the fine or the penalty depending on what it is that’s happened but we’re still a citizen. Like here in the United States, pretty hard to lose your citizenship. You could commit treason and be found guilty of that and lose your citizenship, but maybe you’re seeing the point here. Why is it that we are obsessing over sin management and trying to figure out how to obey the rules or better yet, trying to figure out how to get everybody else to obey the rules while applying full grace to ourselves so that we can appreciate citizenship of the kingdom of God when it’s a done deal? So, I feel like we could go on for hours talking about this, but we will. We will over time. This is kind of where we…where we end today because this is kind of where our reading ends today. But we should take that as a gift because as we go through all of these letters and we and we explore their implications day by day it gives us a chance to little by little grow in our understanding and reshape and reframe what it is that we think that we know and what it is that were doing.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father. We love You and we thank You for Your kindness and we thank You for Your long-suffering and we admit, I admit, I’ve been trying my very best to figure out how to do it right as a way to honor You and to live into this faith completely and yet it’s not possible, not even for one day. And, so, as much stress and anxiety as that can bring up in our lives, we should rest in the fact that we are Your children and all that we have to do is believe that and just allow that knowledge and allow that awareness, that reality, to change us over the course of our lives. Come Holy Spirit. We keep trying to get the formula right, we keep trying to get the recipe right, we keep trying to find out just what it is exactly we’re supposed to do to make this work perfect. We’re trying to obey the law, and nobody’s been able to do that except Jesus and only through him do we have any hope. Let this sink in deeply, Holy Spirit, pray today in Your name we ask. Amen.

1 Chronicles 19:1-21:30, Romans 2:25-3:8, Psalms 11:1-7, Proverbs 19:10-12

Today is the 15^th day of July. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian. I was just thinking this is about closest to the center of this month as we’re gonna get. I guess like noon today is the middle, smack middle of the month. So, here we are in the middle of another month as we move our way through this year and through the Bible. So, it’s great to be here with you today and I am excited to dive in and see what the Scriptures have for us today. We have kinda gotten through all the introductions and we’re getting into the meat of the book of Romans. And, so, we will pick that up when we get there, but first we’re reading from the New Living Translation this week. First Chronicles chapter 19, 20, and 21.

Commentary:

Okay. So, as we as we move into this new week, let’s just kind of orient ourselves to where we are. In first Chronicles we’re continuing to experience the reign of King David and, of course, this can sound like, haven’t I heard this…I mean…haven’t I read this already?” And we have read these stories when we were reading through the books of Samuel and Kings. And just reminding you that those books looked at these stories from the Royal perspective and now we’re kind of looking at the stories from the perspective of the priests. But yes, you’re not losing your mind. We are reviewing same territory. So, like in today’s reading, David bought land and built an altar to God and the land belonged to a man named Araunah who offered to give David everything that he was going to need, give him everything he was gonna need for this altar and this sacrifice and David said, “I cannot give to God what cost me nothing.” And we should perhaps consider our own lives in light of that. Are we offering God what costs us nothing in time and in talent and treasure or have we offered all that we are and all that we have?

And then we moved into the New Testament and the letter to the Romans. And, of course, this is the first letter of the apostle Paul that we are reading. So, we’re kind of getting to know his personality and we can see that he is…he is forthright. And we should understand this. We can look and say he's…he’s kind of aggressive, but he’s a Pharisee. Like this is a guy who’s trained up in the law. Like he’s…he’s absolutely educated religiously. And, so he’s speaking with some authority because he’s talking about what he knows, what he’s been trained in, what his Hebrew listeners would and should understand. So, in the passages that we read today, Paul was addressing questions that had arisen out of distortions of the messages that he was giving about grace, specifically. So, the first argument was sin actually is a valuable thing, right? It’s good. It’s actually…if you look at it in a certain way it’s kind of good because it ultimately shows God’s righteousness, right? Like you can contrast it. Of course, that’s an argument that doesn’t really work very well. That’s sort of like saying cancer is a good thing because you can compare a person who is about to pass away from this disease to a healthy person and just see how good health is. And then the second argument was, the more…the more I sin actually, the better it is. Or the more dishonest I am, the more God’s truthfulness can be seen. And, so, this is like ends justifies the means stuff. And we can laugh at it. Like I’m poking at it a little bit because it obviously doesn’t work and yet you’d be surprised, I would be surprised….we would be surprised if we actually observed ourselves how often we’re trying to do these kinds of arguments. They may not be like this direct, but the ends justifies the means is everywhere. And Paul, in the in these cases, absolutely renounces utterly this line of argument for good reason. It’s unthinkable that God is unjust or unfair, and God's…God is merciful, obviously, but that’s not a license to destroy ourselves, destroy what He has created through sin

And then the Proverbs gave us some things to think about. “Sensible people”, right? So, let’s just kind of pause there. “Sensible people control their temper. They earn respect by overlooking wrongs.” I mean, there’s a lot…there’s a lot in that sentence. I mean because isn’t it our inability to overlook wrongs that is usually what…what triggers us to lose our temper? So, let's…let’s stir that into our coffee and drink it today. Let’s pay attention. If something is starting to arise within us, if anger is welling up and we’re about to lose it, we can pause and we can remember this proverb. We can consider maybe what overlooking the wrong might…might actually bring to the situation and way out what us just jumping in and blowing things up is going to do, which isn’t to say that no matter…that there aren’t matters that we have to step into and actually deal with. But if we want to be sensible about it, because this is where the Proverbs going. If we want to approach these things sensibly then according to the Bible, sensible people control their temper. They earn respect by overlooking wrongs.

Prayer:

Father, we invite You into all that we’ve read today on a number of fronts. I mean we’re following a number of different stories and their stories are winding through differing…differing territory that speaks into our lives and so we don’t want to miss a thing. We want all that You are speaking to us and all that You have for us. So, come Holy Spirit and bring back to memory all the things that we need to remember today, the things that…that we can observe ourselves doing today and we invite You into it fully and completely. We give You absolute and unimpeded access to our hearts and lives today. We want to walk with You this week in lockstep. Come Holy Spirit we pray. In the name of Jesus’ we ask Amen.

Today is the 14^th day of July. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian. It is a pleasure. It’s awesome to be here with you turning the knob and opening the door and stepping through the threshold into a brand-new, shiny, sparkly week here in the middle of the summer or the middle of the winter depending on where you are in the world. No matter what the weather though, I’m glad that we can continue the rhythm of our lives day by day step-by-step as we interact with God’s Word and allow it to speak into our lives inform us, change us, direct us, guide us, lead us into all truth, which is the promise. And, so, with this brand-new week out in front of us we’ll read from the New Living Translation. And, of course, will be picking up where we left off. Today first Chronicles chapter 16 verse 37 through 18 verse 17.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word. And as we have spent the weekend and now kind of moving into this new week beginning the book of Romans we invite Your Holy Spirit to lead us, to guide us into all truth, to help us to understand how it is we came to believe what we believe and help us to see the argument Paul is laying out as we move through this letter. Yesterday we certainly read of all kinds of debauchery, all kinds of evil sins that people had fallen into because they simply ignored the fact that signs of Your love and guidance and presence are everywhere. And, so, we can read those words of condemnation, but we fail to ever get to chapter 2 where we are instructed to not judge because we’re all guilty. And, so, right out of the gate, we see that the apostle Paul has his sights aimed squarely at the religious infrastructure and obviously at the time of this writing he’s aimed at Judaism at the Jewish religious infrastructure in the same way that Jesus was. And yet, as we read this letter and apply it to our own Christian faith infrastructure, we see that there are plenty of things that we must pay attention to and that we must change. Come Holy Spirit lead us forward into all truth we pray. In the name of Jesus we ask. Amen.

Hi beautiful family of God, I trust that all of you enjoyed your long walk on the 7^th of July, Sunday. I was so privileged and blessed to be at __ for the July 4^th weekend and just wanted to share a little experience I got to enjoy. While deep in the forest all you hear is the sound of birds chirping, all different sounds. And we got to see these beautiful royal blue woodpeckers picking at tree trunks and we also spotted lots of different birds sitting on the deck of our cabin. And it just reminded me of God’s constant love for us. And as they take flight from one branch to another __ absolutely not a care or fear or worry about this absolutely huge dense forest. It’s just so amazing how they balance on a tiny leaf or a little twig. And I thought to myself, how even if one of them has to fall to the ground Jesus sees them and He knows them and every move they make and how He watches over them. Same with us. He cares. As God cares for the birds of the air and the trees in the forest how much more valuable are we? And I can just imagine how God cares for us and watches over our every movement. So, something just to think about today and to encourage someone that, you know, lost all hope. Recently a lady called to say she’s lost all hope…

Hi neighbors it’s Lisa the Encourager I hope you all are having a wonderful day. I’m calling today because I was very excited to hear that Jesse and his wife are doing better in their marriage and I’m so happy for you and I’m so happy that you called and I’ll continue to pray for you Jesse, you and your wife. And I’m also praying, calling in today to pray for Tara and her ovarian cancer and I really wanted to devote my entire time to pray for Tara in that she’s facing this real life challenge with the ovarian cancer. So, let’s all go to the Lord together. Dear God I thank You so much for allowing me the opportunity to pray for Tara Lord and I just pray as if I were with her right now at this moment and I was able to lay my hands on her abdomen Lord and I just lay my hands in the way of being the hands and feet of Jesus and nothing more, nothing less God and that You will take this ovarian cancer from her and take it away and just let it not impact her life at all Lord. And I pray Lord God that You would just intervene and make this just…just a very small little thing in her life that doesn’t have to be her life or doesn’t have to impact her life or her daughter’s life in any way God. And I pray Lord Jesus that You will give her comfort in knowing that You are right there with her every step of the way and that she feels Your presence God through every decision, through every communication that she has with her daughter, with every communication she has with the doctors. And I pray God that You will just be with her holding her hand…

Hi, this is Valerie calling from south of Atlanta. I just wanted to call in and pray for the sweet lady who called in on the…I believe it’s the 9^th…who sounded helpless and hopeless and looking for God’s will. Dear heavenly Father I just want to pray for this sweet lady Lord. I pray that You’ll just grant her an extra measure of peace Lord. I thank You that You gave her the confidence to call into the Daily Audio Bible and to express her deep longing to know Your will Lord and to open up herself to the rest of the believers so that we can all come to her aid Lord and lift her up in prayer in front of her throne. Lord I just again just pray that You will make Yourself known in a miraculous way to her Lord. I pray that You will reach down and wrap her in Your arms, and she’ll feel Your comfort as a tangible presence and know Lord that You hear her, You love her and You’re there for her. So many times, Lord we can’t understand why we’re going to things or see where to put the next step Lord but if we can just hold on a little longer and have trust and have faith we know Lord, we know that You are guiding our steps the same way Lord that You’re guiding Paul. Even though times seemed dim with him being in prison and everybody telling him don’t go to Jerusalem and he went anyway and God is using him in a miraculous way through this time of trial while he is being held captive just like our sister right now is being held captive by fear and doubt and unbelief and struggling. We pray Lord that You’ll just give her enough strength to make it through to the next day and then the next day and then the next day and then she’ll look back and know Lord that You were always in control. It’s in Your name we pray. Amen.

Hi Daily Audio Bible family, I am a new, I’ve only been listening for two months and I guess I’ll go by Zion Lion for now. This is hard for me to do because I’ve never asked anyone to pray for me before, but I’ve been reading the Scriptures and I know we are encouraged to share our hearts with our fellow believers and to pray for one another. Listening to all of you, especially Rebecca has given me the courage to ask for help from you brothers and sisters and confess my heart. I’m 32 years old and for my entire life I have been abused in my relationship with my parents. Because of the abuse I’ve had to estrange myself and one-year-old son for my parents. I’ve been estranged multiple times since I was the age of 19 but now it’s permanent. I have such a hard time with this Lord because I know You want us to love and forgive but I cannot put my son in danger or let him to be as abused as I was. I have so much anger and pain in my heart Lord and I don’t want it there. I want to be able to forgive my parents especially my mother. I also want to know Lord that it’s really okay from me to protect myself and my son and that I am not breaking a commandment or not being a child of Christ. I don’t want to feel guilty because even though they have hurt me Lord I know they too are hurt too, and I do feel sad for them. Please help me find peace and forgiveness and let go of this anger Lord and please help them. Lord I thank You. Thank you everyone for listening to me and for your prayers. Today is the 13^th day of July. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian it’s great to be here with you as we close down another of our weeks together. I’m mean we’re 13 days into July but believe it or not, we’re finishing our first full…full week of this month. And I think, if I’ve got it right, the 194^th day of the year. So, it’s great to be here with you as we close the week down. We’re just getting going in the book of Romans on our journey through the New Testament and we’re navigating our way through first Chronicles in the Old Testament. We’ve been reading from the New International Version this week. Today, first Chronicles chapter 15 verse 1 through 16 verse 36.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word and we thank You for another week in Your word, this full first week of the month of July, even though we are approaching the middle of the month. We thank You for Your faithfulness. We thank You for Your loyalty. We thank You for Your love and Your long-suffering. We thank You for bringing us this far. Holy Spirit come. We cannot in our own strength love You as You should be loved, but we can open ourselves and surrender and say, Holy Spirit show us, show us how to press in, show us how to go deeper. We’re showing up here every day and inviting You. So, as we continue to navigate our way through the second half of the year, even though it’s a long way in the distance we’re already thinking about finishing strong. We’re starting early. Come Holy Spirit we pray. In Jesus’ name we ask. Amen.

I just feel like I’m in such a dark, dark place under such spiritual attack. So, I just want to pray with you family. Abba God thank You. Thank You for rescuing Jadrian and what an encouragement that is to all of who are praying for people in our lives who just seem like no way people, like they’re never going to come into faith. And thank You for the sister who called to share her testimony of praying for so many years for her mom and then right at the end You gave that day where she was lucid and that she understood the gospel and she received You. Hi DABbers, this is Lisa I live in Texas. This is my eighth year to listen and I wanted to encourage two callers that I heard today. Shannon, I just wanted to tell you how grateful I am that you called today. I have been praying for your son Adrian for about two years and I was moved to pray for him when I first heard you call a while back because my son James is also or was and is in the same situation that Jadrian was in, which is that he was struggles with mental illness, drug addiction through coke. And when you called today to say that you had the best day of your life because he came to your house and prayed to receive Jesus, I just…I rejoiced with you because, first of all, it’s an answer my prayers for you and second of all, because it gives me hope because we need hope. And I’m so grateful to the callers who call in and give us their praise reports. The young man that called in last week to say that his marriage had been restored and they are expecting a baby. That just…it gives those of us that are still waiting on a miracle hope. So, Shannon I rejoice with you. Another lady called in today and she just sounded broken. She didn’t leave her name, but she said she felt like giving up. So, I just wanted to speak to her right now and tell her that I am praying for you sister. People are praying for you all over the world right now. Whether they call or not, I hope that you know that you feel a special touch of God right now to let you know that He loves you, that you’re doing the right thing when you listen to His word every day, that He loves you and I just wanted to share that with you. Good morning Daily Audio Bible this is Kate from Michigan first time caller and I wanted to call in to pray for someone. God put it on my heart this morning. There was a young man that called in I believe last week and he was asking for prayer request for himself because he is battling very, very deeply with depression. God put on my heart this morning that I needed to call in for you. Just had this overwhelming sense that you are having a very hard time, a hard battle with the devil right now and he is trying to overtake you and push you down with all the strength that he has, and you need some lifting up right now. And so, I have been there, and I pray for you. I know how hard it is to, you know, take a step back and let God be your strength and not try and fix it yourself and pull yourself up from where you are by yourself. You can’t do it on your own. And God has got you. If He can put all the stars in the sky you have to trust that if He can do that then He can take care of your life and help you feel better. I just wanted to call in and pray that for you today and I pray that God gives you strength in wherever you are, that today He grants you peace. Thank you, Daily Audio Bible. Hi Daily Audio Bible prayer warriors, this is Sally Weiland from Cheyenne Wyoming and you guys answered a prayer request to pray for little Kayden when he was having his __  surgery and you prayed him into health and healing and I called last week about José, a young man who had inadvertently been overdosed with lithium and medical error put him in the ICU in a coma. And the doctors have called him a miracle. You guys prayed him through it, and he is getting ready to be released. He’s made a full recovery thus far and I just wanted to thank you so much for praying and praise again the Lord who hears and answer as every prayer. And I know that sometimes God’s answer is no, but in these two instances your prayers made a difference. So, thank you so much.

1 Chronicles 12:19-14:17, Romans 1:1-17, Psalms 9:13-20, Proverbs 19:4-5

Today’s the 12^th day of July. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian. It is great to be here with you at the end of a workweek. And as I mentioned yesterday, we concluded the book of Acts yesterday, which means that we’re going to be moving into some new territory in the New Testament, but we’ll talk about that when we get there. First, we’re reading from the New International Version this week. First Chronicles chapter 12 verse 19 through 14 verse 17.

Introduction to the book of Romans:

Okay. So, yesterday we finished the book of Acts, and, as we will recall the first part of the book of Acts really helped us to get to know the apostle Peter and his immediate ministry after Jesus ascension, but then later, the second half of the book of Acts introduced us to Saul who became the apostle Paul and his missionary journeys. And, so, we’ve been all over the Roman Empire, practically with the apostle Paul. So, we had the opportunity to get acquainted. Today we’re moving into new territory into the book of Romans, which is a letter written by the apostle Paul and it’s the first of a bunch of letters that we’re gonna encounter from the apostle Paul in the New Testament. Paul’s not the only letter writer in the New Testament. There are other letters, but we’re gonna be spending our time for the next while now reading letters to people and to groups of people. But this one called Romans, most biblical scholars agree that Romans is by far Paul’s most comprehensive work and so much of our theology around this faith, this Christian faith, so much of our understanding of the good news of Jesus it originates in the book of Romans. And it’s likely that this letter was written from the city of Corinth we’re some of Paul’s greatest missionary work had been accomplished and it was probably written somewhere in the mid 50s A.D. That might be just a date. You may just think, “that’s a date and it’s a long time ago”, a couple thousand years ago, almost. Like if it were 2050 A.D. then we’re looking back to 50 A.D. And again, you could be just like, “well that’s cool, it’s cool to know when it was written, but what significance?” What’s interesting is that Paul’s letters…and one of the reasons why they’re so revered and important is they are some of the earliest writings about Jesus. So, when we talk about the mid 50s A.D. for the letter to the Romans, we’re talking about a letter that was written before any of the Gospels were written. So, you won’t hear Paul talking in kind of gospel narrative style where like he’s telling the story of Jesus because Paul never met Jesus in the flesh while he was ministering on the earth. The Jesus that Paul met…and by the way I’m not trying to say there is a couple of different Jesus’s…but when Paul encountered Christ, he encountered Jesus after His resurrection after His ascension. So, the Jesus Paul knew was essentially the cosmic Christ, like the Eternal One. And again, I know that gets kind of convoluted. I’m not saying that Jesus in the flesh on earth was a different Jesus than the cosmic Christ. They’re the same person. I’m just saying Paul didn’t know Jesus in life. Paul didn’t know Jesus in His humanity on earth. And when Paul wrote Romans the narrative stories, at least in written form that we know as the Gospels, those had not been penned yet. Of course, this opens up a can of worms because just about everything in the Bible has been up for debate over the thousands of years that scholarly disciplines have been applied to it. So, there would certainly be scholars who would argue for earlier dates of certain Gospels, especially the gospel of Mark being more contemporary with Paul’s writings and I’m not trying to get us in the weeds here. I’m just trying to say some of Paul’s authority in his letters come because of their earliness. They were being passed around between churches and communities. They were being copied and kind of moving their way throughout the early church, especially in a lot of churches that Paul had a hand in and founding. So, we see that as they’re passed around, they begin to carry weight and authority that lasts all the way until councils ratify the New Testament. So, anyway, when Paul finished the book of Romans, he sent a Deaconess, Phoebe, from the church of Cenchreae, which was just outside of Corinth to hand-deliver this letter and make an introduction to the apostle Paul to the Romans. And we have followed Paul in the book of Acts throughout his missionary journeys and we know that Rome was a place that he wanted to go but it was not a place that he was able to go until he was under arrest. So, the church in Rome wasn’t planted by Paul and we don’t know who brought the gospel of Jesus to Rome. The most likely scenario is that somebody or a group of somebody’s who were influenced by the outpouring of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost carried the gospel back to Rome and the church was established there. So, Paul was arrested in Jerusalem, right? And then he was held captive and under arrest in Caesarea Maritima before going to Rome and he was imprisoned mostly because he taught that the gospel, the message of Jesus, was open to Jews and Gentiles alike, that God was now welcoming all who believed in Jesus into his family, which was a massive reframing of the perceptions and traditions of devout Jews and was one of the reasons Paul constantly caused riots everywhere that he went. It’s the book of Romans that explains why Paul felt the way that he feels, that he felt, about all of these things, explains how he came to this truth. And he wrote in an educated way that devout Jews could understand, connecting beautifully Jesus to a story that had been taking place among the Jews since Abraham. Paul explained the law. We’ll hear a lot of talk about the law in Paul’s writings, which is referring to the Mosaic law. And he just unpacked its purpose as a Pharisee who would been devout while revealing that nobody’d ever been able to obey the law perfectly and the idea was if you could obey the law perfectly you could be justified before God. And, so, Paul’s just realizing and reiterating and saying out loud, nobody’s done that. No one be could become perfect before God on their own, through a law or through rules. But Jesus fulfilled the law and through Jesus we can all be made righteous before God. And, so, with all of that being said, we begin the letter to the Romans chapter 1 verses 1 through 17.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word and we thank You that as we continue the journey day by day, step-by-step we get to turn the page and encounter new aspects and new stories and new insights. And so, as You have brought us safely here to the book of Romans, we invite Your Holy Spirit. So much of what we believe is contained in this letter. And, so, now we have a front row seat to hearing the argument, to hearing what it was that Paul was trying to say as he was unpacking the gospel. So, come Holy Spirit into our time as we navigate the letter to the Romans we pray. And of course, Your guidance, Your insight, Your love and compassion for us throughout every verse, every word that we read, we invite You. Plant Your word in our lives in our spirit and transform us we ask in Jesus’ name. Amen.

He’s…he was born on June 10^th and I was calling for prayers for his…my wife and his mother Kelly and his two sisters Azlan and Danielle. I was calling for prayers for them for peace and understanding for them. My son passed away today around 6 PM Eastern time today at Duke University Hospital in Dermark North Carolina. He was 28 days old. He was born on June 10^th. He died today on July 7^th. Please pray for his sister’s Azlan and Daniela pray for his wife…I mean my wife…his mother Kelly as we grieve his loss. And pray for Orson as he joins God in heaven as one of his angels. Thank you so much.

She’s about to have shoulder replacement surgery on the 15^th of this month and I’m just reaching out to you to make sure that we get as much prayer for her as possible. And while I am on the subject of Donnie I just want to let you know, wives out there, that she has listened to the Daily Audio Bible for years now and it’s because of her commitment to listening to the Daily Audio Bible and hearing her lay in her bed and every morning pray for those people that call in with prayer requests that I went from not only just listening to the Daily Audio Bible but actually listening to the prayers that come on after Brian delivers the message. Hello DAB this is Terry the trucker. I’m just calling to give an update. I’m probably about 2 ½ weeks left of therapy. Ask for continued prayers that my body will be ready to go back to work and I’m able to by the end of the month. Also want to give a shout out to all the people that’ve called in about…about being discouraged and losing hope and not knowing their purpose. You know, we all go through seasons. Some of them last just a few days, few weeks, months. Some years, sometimes a lifetime. But, you know, we never really know why. Sometimes, you know, God will reveal or it to us and sometimes He don’t, you know. And it may last you…if it lasts you your lifetime then it might just be that it encourages somebody that hears your story and knows what you went through and can say, “man that person went through a lot, but they stayed faithful. They fought the fight, they ran the race and that we’re a good and faithful servant.” That’s what our Lord wants of us. So, I just ask you to stay strong, keep your eyes on Jesus. That’s what we’re here for. And that’s what He’s for. I want to give a shout out to Cherry and Greg. You’re in my prayers. Blessings from California. Blind Tony. All you guys. 1 Chron 11:1-12:18, Acts 28:1-31, Ps 9:1-12, Pr 19:1-3

Today is the 11^th day of July. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian and it is wonderful to be here with you today as we continue moving forward, step-by-step, day by day through the Bible this year. This is a big day because today when we get to the New Testament reading we will conclude the book of Acts, which will lead us to begin the book of Romans tomorrow. And, so, we will move into letters from people to people as we continue forward through the Bible. But we’ll talk about all that as we go through it. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Let’s be right here and finish the book of Acts well but before we can do that we have our Old Testament reading from the book of first Chronicles. Today we’ll read chapter 11 verse 1 through 12:18 and we’re from the New International Version this week.

Commentary:

Okay. So, we concluded the book of acts today, as we mentioned at the beginning. And the book of Acts concludes with Paul…well…with Paul finally ending up in Rome. But yesterday we were in the ship with Paul being buffeted by the wind and the waves and all hope was lost. And then there was an island. And as it turned out, the island was called Malta. So, if you just look at a map of the Mediterranean Sea and you find Caesarea, so way at the east end of the Mediterranean Sea and Israel and then you look at where Rome is and then you look at where Malta is then you realize how fortunate it was that that they landed on Malta because if they had missed out island, well, they would probably for sure not have survived. The wide-open sea and a watery grave would’ve been out in front of them. And, so, as it turns out Paul tells everybody there gonna live and they do and the Maltese people were friendly and there’s a bonfire and a beach and a snake incident, right? And we’ve seen this with Paul before. They communicate and then people start thinking their gods and they want to worship them. So, there’s this snake that attaches itself to Paul’s hand, he shakes it in the fire, and everybody’s like he’s a murderer, and he’s gonna die and he doesn’t. So, instead of a murderer, they think he’s a God. Obviously he’s not a God and obviously he’s not trying to say that he is, but he does use the opportunity when people are listening to walk right through the open door and share the gospel of Jesus. And, so, during the three months that they spent on Malta Paul healed and ministered. And then when they sailed away they sailed away with great honor. Malta’s still an island. It’s still a place. We have brothers and sisters who listen to the Daily Audio Bible who live on Malta and we’ve heard from them over the years. Malta ended up being one of the first of the Roman colonies to convert to the faith of Jesus and they still honor Paul’s visit all the way until today.

And then we also have to talk about what we read in Proverbs because Proverbs 19:3 pretty much lays out an experience that we have all had and is kind of the normal posture of the world toward God. “A person’s own folly leads to their ruin. Yet their heart rages against the Lord.” And that is as true a statement as it gets. We’re all guilty of blaming God for whatever happens to us, right? God, as I’ve said in the book Reframe, has become the cosmic trash sheep for all of our suffering and while we’re heaping that blame we’re like taking steps backward away. We’re like…we’re trying to remove ourselves from being culpable at all. Like, if God is sovereign and all-powerful then He wouldn’t have let this happen. Have you ever heard that one before? I mean have you heard that before? Have you ever said that before? Probably heard and said many times. But when did we become above God and strong and powerful enough to comment on and make assumptions about what He does and doesn’t do. He is the sovereign Almighty God, Creator of all things. I mean, the fact is, blaming somebody else for something that you have done is a horrible thing to do, but it’s also not healthy. It’s like a disorder. It’s devastating to relationships. So, why do we continue to do it to God when He’s the only one willing to stand with us no matter what may come. Like bad things happen that we navigate ourselves into, right, our own folly, our own foolishness, and it leads to our own ruin, and then we want to blame God for what happened when actually He’s the only one that is still standing with us in it. He’s not to blame. He’s in it and can help us navigate out of it but we’re trying to transfer blame. So, a good relationship happens when people are willing to own their own lives and actions. So, it’s kind of time that we apply that not only to our other relationships, but also to our relationship with God. There’s nothing He’s gonna leave us and abandon us over if we’re walking with Him. There’s nothing He’s not gonna guide us through if we’re walking with Him, but He also loves us enough to let us walk away if that’s what we’re after. And we need to stop blaming Him and we do. Better yet, we should stop walking away at all, ever. Or as the Proverbs says, “a person’s own folly leads to their ruin.”

Prayer:

Father, we’ve experienced that on number of occasions, big and small in our lives. We can certainly appreciate and validate what’s being said here in the book of Proverbs, but we also have to acknowledge the ways that we try to shift the blame. And when we can’t find any person to put it on we put it on You and this pulls us apart. No relationship can stand like that. If we were in a relationship and the only thing that was going on was transfer…transference of blame, that’s pretty…that’s a pretty slippery slope that’s not heading in a good direction at all and we’ll end up with the ruins, the relationship. And, so, we shouldn’t be surprised in how we’re continually confused about our relationship with You, and yet even in that we want to blame You. Help us to look in the mirror today and Holy Spirit, help us to see. Help us to see what we’re doing. Help us to see that it’s not healthy. We surrender to You. You are the sovereign God and we acknowledge that when walk away from You, life does begin to spiral, but it’s not You who pushed us away, it’s we who walked away. Forgive us, God. We return to You. Come Holy Spirit we pray, in the name of Jesus we ask. Amen.

I want to remind you about…about the family reunion that’s coming up at the end of August, first part of September, over Labor Day weekend. We have a fantastically beautiful camp out on Percy Priest Lake that we just locked down for us. We needed to try to increase the capacity from what we tried last year and so we’ve done that and so there’s availability and hope you can come. And I want to mention a couple of things about that. We locked down all of the cabins there. So, as many of you can stay on site as want to…they cost a little bit more than a hotel around here, but not by much. And there the size…they’re the size of like a house. I mean they’re laid out like a bunkhouse, but they have their own shower and bathroom and all of this in it. But they’re huge and spacious and right on the grounds and we have a few of those left but we’re gonna have to release them back to the camp in another week. So, want to give you heads up on that. And also want to tell you why you should come. This past year, this year of 2019, this year of maintenance this year of maintaining, man, at least for me, one of the most poignant words, advanced words that I’ve gotten and as I hear feedback from the community, yeah, maintenance, maintaining that takes a lot of focus. And at least for me, halfway through the year now I've…yeah know, I don’t know what the second half of the year completely looks like, but halfway through here I can say, “man you can’t really be involved in what you can’t maintain otherwise you need to question whether you are involved in it, because if you can’t maintain it then you’re eventually gonna have a problem. And then just in terms of my relationship with God, I realized, if I want more of God than I have to be with God more, which means all these things that I’m maintaining, I have to question whether I should be. And one of the things that Jill and I realized coming into this year was that we…we were coming to an end of the More Gathering on Sharp Top Mountain in Georgia. We didn’t know what was next or for that matter still really don’t know exactly what’s next we just knew that was supposed to happen. And, so, in obedience we did. And at this point now we know, oh, next year were not gonna be doing all of the things that we’ve been doing. Next year were supposed to be doing some things that we’ve been trying to bring to resolution for years and also God is inviting us onto some new paths. So, we won’t be doing the More Gathering in 2020, and we won’t be doing the Family Reunion in 2020. We will be going to Israel in 2020 and that…that pilgrimage is about sold out. There’s a handful of spots left. And, so, if that’s been on your…on your list to check into, I would check it out. But I’m saying all this to say, this Family Reunion is really meaningful to us because, you know, we’ve been at this for 14 years, seven days a week, and the Lord is inviting us in the next year in 2020 to breathe and to dream again. So, this family reunion is meaningful to us because it puts us face-to-face with you and not just seeing you by voice but seeing you in person. And, so, I hope you can be there. I hope you can come to the rolling hills of Tennessee and see what all the magic is about here and visit our hometown of Nashville, which is the destination place. For whatever reason, we just watched our city explode with a lot of energy and excitement. You know what Brian, I want to thank you for reading all those big names in the Bible because I think I would get totally discouraged and put the Bible down if you didn’t read them because those are huge names and it’s like you’re almost speaking in tongues. It’s like I was so amazed at how you went through all those names in the Chronicles. And I’m like whoa. So, yeah, I appreciate your reading every single one of those names in the book of Chronicles and I thank you for the Daily Audio Bible because it’s like a big world Bible study, a big world reading of the Bible all over the universe. It is like one big gigantic Bible study learning about the people in the Bible. And sometimes I think in the past some things in the Bible have been very frustrating to read but you have made it come to life, alive in our spirits and our physical world and emotional and mental. It’s like if the Bible’s just coming to life in our present day and it’s like we’re living back in time kind of like super book. I don’t know if you remember that when I was little I remember super book. But yeah, it is like amazing how you read the Bible all the time. Hi DAB family this is MK and I’m really needing your prayers right now. I’m in such a bad place. I’m so angry. I currently hate my church very much I finally feel like I hate everything, and hate is such a strong word but that’s what I’m feeling. I feel so much rage towards my leaders, towards my pastors, just towards everyone right now because of a situation that occurred where there was injustice. But I need you to pray for me and that I would remember that I go to a good church, that every church has…has issues and that there is a need to…of a revival in my church and that as I a church member, a child of God, I need to pray for my church but I ask you to pray for my heart ,that I’d feel peace, that this anger would leave me and that I be able to move on from the situation with God. Hi there, I just need to ask for some prayer. I lost my job a while…a couple of months ago and I was supposed to give up my apartment, I’m living with a friend and I recently __ thank God I recently started working again and I managed __ but unfortunately, I’m __ living __ six __ at the moment. That’s how many times I’ve thought about __ . He kind of just ignores me and still tries to have sex with me. And I’ve started drinking just because it makes it easier. And recently I’ve looked in the mirror and I realized I can’t…I can’t notice myself anymore. __ God’s really bad and he actually went there for cigarettes and I realized, that no, that’s how many times he __ interested in your body but __ he smokes or he’s interested or whatever. I thank You that You want to co-labor with us, that You want us to speak with You on a regular basis. I thank You that You are creating a deeper intimacy within Your people, within Your body. I thank You that You are delivering us from the God of this world, that You have already delivered us from the God of this world, that You are teaching us how to be wise stewards and wise managers over every area of our lives so that we can be faithful in the small things, so that we can be ruler of the greater things. Father I thank You that You’re destroying poverty off our minds. I thank You that Your destroying the lottery kind of messaging of our minds when it comes to our finances but that we have a healthy understanding of finances. I thank You that we are increasing our skill sets in finances so that we can go out and do the will of God, to take care of the sick, to take care of the widows, to take care of the orphans and take care of those who need someone to speak up for them. I thank You that You are moving the financial mountains, the financial burdens of our life so that we can be free people, free people to pursue all that You have put in our hearts to do. I thank You that Your delivering people right now from suicidal torment just as You have delivered me from suicidal torment.
