1 Chronicles 24:1-26:11

David Organizes the Priests

24 The divisions of the sons of Aaron were these. The sons of (A)Aaron: Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar. (B)But Nadab and Abihu died before their father and had no children, so Eleazar and Ithamar became the priests. With the help of (C)Zadok of the sons of Eleazar, and Ahimelech of the sons of Ithamar, David organized them according to the appointed duties in their service. Since more chief men were found among the sons of Eleazar than among the sons of Ithamar, they organized them under sixteen heads of fathers' houses of the sons of Eleazar, and eight of the sons of Ithamar. They divided them (D)by lot, all alike, for there were sacred officers and officers of God among both the sons of Eleazar and the sons of Ithamar. And the scribe Shemaiah, the son of Nethanel, a Levite, recorded them in the presence of the king and the princes and Zadok the priest and (E)Ahimelech the son of Abiathar and the heads of the fathers' houses of the priests and of the Levites, one father's house being chosen for Eleazar and one chosen for Ithamar.

The first lot fell to Jehoiarib, the second to Jedaiah, the third to Harim, the fourth to Seorim, the fifth to Malchijah, the sixth to Mijamin, 10 the seventh to Hakkoz, the eighth to (F)Abijah, 11 the ninth to Jeshua, the tenth to Shecaniah, 12 the eleventh to Eliashib, the twelfth to Jakim, 13 the thirteenth to Huppah, the fourteenth to Jeshebeab, 14 the fifteenth to Bilgah, the sixteenth to Immer, 15 the seventeenth to Hezir, the eighteenth to Happizzez, 16 the nineteenth to Pethahiah, the twentieth to Jehezkel, 17 the twenty-first to Jachin, the twenty-second to Gamul, 18 the twenty-third to Delaiah, the twenty-fourth to Maaziah. 19 These had as their appointed duty in their service (G)to come into the house of the Lord according to the procedure established for them by Aaron their father, as the Lord God of Israel had commanded him.

20 And of the rest of the sons of Levi: (H)of the sons of Amram, Shubael; of the sons of Shubael, Jehdeiah. 21 (I)Of Rehabiah: of the sons of Rehabiah, Isshiah the chief. 22 Of the Izharites, Shelomoth; of the sons of Shelomoth, Jahath. 23 (J)The sons of Hebron:[a] Jeriah the chief,[b] Amariah the second, Jahaziel the third, Jekameam the fourth. 24 (K)The sons of Uzziel, Micah; of the sons of Micah, Shamir. 25 The brother of Micah, Isshiah; of the sons of Isshiah, Zechariah. 26 (L)The sons of Merari: Mahli and Mushi. The sons of Jaaziah: Beno.[c] 27 The sons of Merari: of Jaaziah, Beno, Shoham, Zaccur, and Ibri. 28 Of Mahli: Eleazar, (M)who had no sons. 29 Of Kish, the sons of Kish: Jerahmeel. 30 (N)The sons of Mushi: Mahli, Eder, and Jerimoth. These were the sons of the Levites according to their fathers' houses. 31 These also, the head of each father's house and his younger brother alike, (O)cast lots, just as their brothers the sons of Aaron, in the presence of King David, (P)Zadok, Ahimelech, and the heads of fathers' houses of the priests and of the Levites.

David Organizes the Musicians

25 David and the chiefs of the service also set apart for the service the sons of (Q)Asaph, and of (R)Heman, and of (S)Jeduthun, who (T)prophesied with lyres, with (U)harps, and with cymbals. The list of those who did the work and of their duties was: Of the sons of Asaph: Zaccur, Joseph, Nethaniah, and Asharelah, sons of Asaph, under the direction of Asaph, who (V)prophesied under the direction of the king. Of Jeduthun, the sons of Jeduthun: Gedaliah, Zeri, Jeshaiah, Shimei,[d] Hashabiah, and Mattithiah, six, under the direction of their father Jeduthun, (W)who prophesied with the lyre in thanksgiving and praise to the Lord. Of Heman, the sons of Heman: Bukkiah, Mattaniah, Uzziel, Shebuel and Jerimoth, Hananiah, Hanani, Eliathah, Giddalti, and Romamti-ezer, Joshbekashah, Mallothi, Hothir, Mahazioth. All these were the sons of Heman (X)the king's seer, according to the promise of God to exalt him, for God had given Heman fourteen sons and three daughters. They were all under the direction of their father in the music in the house of the Lord with cymbals, (Y)harps, and lyres for the service of the house of God. Asaph, Jeduthun, and Heman were under the order of the king. The number of them along with their brothers, who were trained in singing to the Lord, all who were skillful, was (Z)288. And they cast lots for their duties, (AA)small and great, teacher and pupil alike.

The first lot fell for Asaph to Joseph; the second to Gedaliah, to him and his brothers and his sons, twelve; 10 the third to Zaccur, his sons and his brothers, twelve; 11 the fourth to Izri, his sons and his brothers, twelve; 12 the fifth to Nethaniah, his sons and his brothers, twelve; 13 the sixth to Bukkiah, his sons and his brothers, twelve; 14 the seventh to Jesharelah, his sons and his brothers, twelve; 15 the eighth to Jeshaiah, his sons and his brothers, twelve; 16 the ninth to Mattaniah, his sons and his brothers, twelve; 17 the tenth to Shimei, his sons and his brothers, twelve; 18 the eleventh to Azarel, his sons and his brothers, twelve; 19 the twelfth to Hashabiah, his sons and his brothers, twelve; 20 to the thirteenth, Shubael, his sons and his brothers, twelve; 21 to the fourteenth, Mattithiah, his sons and his brothers, twelve; 22 to the fifteenth, to Jeremoth, his sons and his brothers, twelve; 23 to the sixteenth, to Hananiah, his sons and his brothers, twelve; 24 to the seventeenth, to Joshbekashah, his sons and his brothers, twelve; 25 to the eighteenth, to Hanani, his sons and his brothers, twelve; 26 to the nineteenth, to Mallothi, his sons and his brothers, twelve; 27 to the twentieth, to Eliathah, his sons and his brothers, twelve; 28 to the twenty-first, to Hothir, his sons and his brothers, twelve; 29 to the twenty-second, to Giddalti, his sons and his brothers, twelve; 30 to the twenty-third, to Mahazioth, his sons and his brothers, twelve; 31 to the twenty-fourth, to Romamti-ezer, his sons and his brothers, twelve.

Divisions of the Gatekeepers

26 As for the divisions of the gatekeepers: of the Korahites, Meshelemiah the son of Kore, of the sons of Asaph. And Meshelemiah had sons: (AB)Zechariah the firstborn, Jediael the second, Zebadiah the third, Jathniel the fourth, Elam the fifth, Jehohanan the sixth, Eliehoenai the seventh. And (AC)Obed-edom had sons: Shemaiah the firstborn, Jehozabad the second, Joah the third, Sachar the fourth, Nethanel the fifth, Ammiel the sixth, Issachar the seventh, Peullethai the eighth, (AD)for God blessed him. Also to his son Shemaiah were sons born who were rulers in their fathers' houses, for they were men of great ability. The sons of Shemaiah: Othni, Rephael, Obed and Elzabad, whose brothers were able men, Elihu and Semachiah. All these were of the sons of Obed-edom with their sons and brothers, able men qualified for the service; sixty-two of Obed-edom. And Meshelemiah had sons and brothers, able men, eighteen. 10 And (AE)Hosah, of the sons of Merari, had sons: Shimri the chief (for though he was not the firstborn, his father made him chief), 11 Hilkiah the second, Tebaliah the third, Zechariah the fourth: all the sons and brothers of Hosah were thirteen.

Romans 4:1-12

Abraham Justified by Faith

What then shall we say was gained by Abraham, (A)our forefather according to the flesh? For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but (B)not before God. For what does the Scripture say? (C)“Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness.” Now (D)to the one who works, his wages are not counted as a gift but as his due. And to the one who does not work but (E)believes in[a] him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is counted as righteousness, just as David also speaks of the blessing of the one to whom God counts righteousness apart from works:

(F)“Blessed are those whose lawless deeds are forgiven,
and whose sins are covered;
blessed is the man against whom the Lord will not (G)count his sin.”

Is this blessing then only for (H)the circumcised, or also for the uncircumcised? (I)For we say that faith was counted to Abraham as righteousness. 10 How then was it counted to him? Was it before or after he had been circumcised? It was not after, but before he was circumcised. 11 (J)He received the sign of circumcision as a seal of the righteousness that he had by faith while he was still uncircumcised. The purpose was (K)to make him the father of all who believe without being circumcised, so that righteousness would be counted to them as well, 12 and to make him the father of the circumcised who are not merely circumcised but who also walk in the footsteps of the faith that our father Abraham had before he was circumcised.

Psalm 13

How Long, O Lord?

To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David.

13 (A)How long, O Lord? Will you (B)forget me forever?
How long will you (C)hide your face from me?
How long must I take (D)counsel in my soul
and have sorrow in my heart all the day?
How long shall my enemy be exalted over me?

(E)Consider and answer me, O Lord my God;
(F)light up my eyes, lest (G)I sleep the sleep of death,
(H)lest my enemy say, “I have prevailed over him,”
lest my foes rejoice because I am (I)shaken.

But I have (J)trusted in your steadfast love;
my heart shall (K)rejoice in your salvation.
I will sing to the Lord,
because he has dealt bountifully with me.

Proverbs 19:15-16

Today is the 16th day of July, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian, it is wonderful to be here with you today as we draw near to the close of another week. But no matter what time demarcation we are paying attention to or traveling to, we’re ultimately taking the next step forward together and that next step will lead us back into the book of first Chronicles in the Old Testament and of course, we are in the letter to the Romans in the New Testament. We’re reading from the New Living Translation this week, first Chronicles chapters 22 and 23 today.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word. We thank You for another week, another week to be in Your word, another week to walk together, another week has passed us by and we are grateful, each and every week for how You speak into our lives, through the Scriptures. We are humbled, we are grateful and we are tasked with being obedient. And so, Holy Spirit, come, how can we, in our own strength accomplish anything that is offered to us. We accomplish by yielding over to You, Your authority in our lives and obeying You and the comfort that that brings, knowing that this is the path that me was walk in and so plant what we’ve read into the soil of our hearts. Help us to see the weeds that are sprouting up that they may be pulled out. Help us to cultivate the fruit of the Spirit, in our lives, yielding a harvest. Not only that transforms the way that we live but transforms life all around us. We pray this in the powerful name of Jesus. Amen.

Prayer and Encouragements:

Hi, DAB family, my name is Betty and I’m calling from Hamburg, New York. I’ve been a long-time listener and love my Daily Audio Bible family. A couple of years back my son Nathan, needed prayer. He had a mental breakdown sort of and he was in the hospital, quite a while. Well, we’ve had a bit of a relapse and he is in hospital again in somewhat of a catatonic state. And I’m just reaching out for prayer again on his behalf that he will have a quick recovery and that’ll him come through this closer to the Lord. He’s a little bit of a fighter in that arena. Thank you, people, for praying. You’re a wonderful family.

Hi, DABers, I’m just calling to just pray a prayer of protection. I just feel that the enemy is really mad right now and that he’s trying to do anything he can to…to thwart us from moving forward and you know what that means? That means, that we are on the right path. So, stay strong DABers. I am just so thankful for all of you and for all of the people who are…are calling in know that…that God is for you, that whenever there is a persecution that is God saying yes, because you are about to get promoted in the Spirit. So, we thank You God, we thank You God for promotions in the Spirit and in the super-natural God, that You can do, you can do anything. And so, we just thank You and I just ask for prayer for this break-through. I am, a decision is being made today. So, I am going to be part of a mastermind entrepreneurship program and this is a huge promotion for me. And it’s like I’ll be surrounded by you know, masterminds. I mean, who am me, who am me. Haha, I’m an English teacher, can you tell? Anyway, who am I? I’m just this little girl, yeah, standing in the kingdom, kingdom entrepreneurship. And this door is opening so I just thank you guys. I just ask that, that I would get in, yeah. In Yashua’s name. Thank you, friends.

Hi family, this is Gordon. I’m calling you because I just listened to today’s message on July 13th and it was about where am I going and if I’m obedient. And for the first time after 18 years, I’m going to be, I put in my resignation, my career path. I’m very scared because I am leaving to start something for anew. And I need to make sure that this is in God’s will and direction. Because it doesn’t matter if it’s just a career choice or whether it be more other series family choices. I think that I need to let God be involved in this decision. I want to make sure it’s in His will, where I’m supposed to go. And I need your prayers so that God can give me that direction. I don’t move without Him telling me where to go first. But I don’t want to do this on my own and do it wrong. So, if you could pray for me, I’d appreciate that. Thank you.

Hello my DAB family. And I’m calling in response to a oh my gosh, I guess I called a combination of a prayer request and praise at the same time but like, all right. There’s a woman who called in today. I heard this message on the 13th of July, so it may have been a few days ago. And I believe she, she didn’t identify her name but your car was broken into and you also reminded me that there’s a trucker gentleman we’ve been praying for that he was broken into as well and identity stolen. You mentioned when someone broke into your car and your identity was stolen and oh my gosh, you touched my heart so much. Because right away, you’re praying for the person who broke into your car. Like, if they need something so badly that they had to break in and you’re praying for them. Oh man, thank you, thank you for that. Thank you for your prayer. And yes, of course, praying for you as your identity was stolen. Years and years ago this happened to me. This is not about me I’m just empathizing with you. But you said, you know what, our identity is in Christ. Our identity is in Jesus Christ. Oh, so true, praise God. And yet, with that, yes we do pray for you, yes, in the name of Jesus, as our identities are stolen, that it not be used for the bad and all the obvious implications that can come from this, I lift my prayer for you. With our fellow DABers in Jesus name. He will have his protection, his loving protection

1 Chronicles 22-23

22 Then David said, “This will be the location for the Temple of the Lord God and the place of the altar for Israel’s burnt offerings!”

Preparations for the Temple

So David gave orders to call together the foreigners living in Israel, and he assigned them the task of preparing finished stone for building the Temple of God. David provided large amounts of iron for the nails that would be needed for the doors in the gates and for the clamps, and he gave more bronze than could be weighed. He also provided innumerable cedar logs, for the men of Tyre and Sidon had brought vast amounts of cedar to David.

David said, “My son Solomon is still young and inexperienced. And since the Temple to be built for the Lord must be a magnificent structure, famous and glorious throughout the world, I will begin making preparations for it now.” So David collected vast amounts of building materials before his death.

Then David sent for his son Solomon and instructed him to build a Temple for the Lord, the God of Israel. “My son, I wanted to build a Temple to honor the name of the Lord my God,” David told him. “But the Lord said to me, ‘You have killed many men in the battles you have fought. And since you have shed so much blood in my sight, you will not be the one to build a Temple to honor my name. But you will have a son who will be a man of peace. I will give him peace with his enemies in all the surrounding lands. His name will be Solomon,[a] and I will give peace and quiet to Israel during his reign. 10 He is the one who will build a Temple to honor my name. He will be my son, and I will be his father. And I will secure the throne of his kingdom over Israel forever.’

11 “Now, my son, may the Lord be with you and give you success as you follow his directions in building the Temple of the Lord your God. 12 And may the Lord give you wisdom and understanding, that you may obey the Law of the Lord your God as you rule over Israel. 13 For you will be successful if you carefully obey the decrees and regulations that the Lord gave to Israel through Moses. Be strong and courageous; do not be afraid or lose heart!

14 “I have worked hard to provide materials for building the Temple of the Lord—nearly 4,000 tons of gold, 40,000 tons of silver,[b] and so much iron and bronze that it cannot be weighed. I have also gathered timber and stone for the walls, though you may need to add more. 15 You have a large number of skilled stonemasons and carpenters and craftsmen of every kind. 16 You have expert goldsmiths and silversmiths and workers of bronze and iron. Now begin the work, and may the Lord be with you!”

17 Then David ordered all the leaders of Israel to assist Solomon in this project. 18 “The Lord your God is with you,” he declared. “He has given you peace with the surrounding nations. He has handed them over to me, and they are now subject to the Lord and his people. 19 Now seek the Lord your God with all your heart and soul. Build the sanctuary of the Lord God so that you can bring the Ark of the Lord’s Covenant and the holy vessels of God into the Temple built to honor the Lord’s name.”

Duties of the Levites

23 When David was an old man, he appointed his son Solomon to be king over Israel. David summoned all the leaders of Israel, together with the priests and Levites. All the Levites who were thirty years old or older were counted, and the total came to 38,000. Then David said, “From all the Levites, 24,000 will supervise the work at the Temple of the Lord. Another 6,000 will serve as officials and judges. Another 4,000 will work as gatekeepers, and 4,000 will praise the Lord with the musical instruments I have made.” Then David divided the Levites into divisions named after the clans descended from the three sons of Levi—Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.

The Gershonites

The Gershonite family units were defined by their lines of descent from Libni[c] and Shimei, the sons of Gershon. Three of the descendants of Libni were Jehiel (the family leader), Zetham, and Joel. These were the leaders of the family of Libni.

Three of the descendants of Shimei were Shelomoth, Haziel, and Haran. 10 Four other descendants of Shimei were Jahath, Ziza,[d] Jeush, and Beriah. 11 Jahath was the family leader, and Ziza was next. Jeush and Beriah were counted as a single family because neither had many sons.

The Kohathites

12 Four of the descendants of Kohath were Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel.

13 The sons of Amram were Aaron and Moses. Aaron and his descendants were set apart to dedicate the most holy things, to offer sacrifices in the Lord’s presence, to serve the Lord, and to pronounce blessings in his name forever.

14 As for Moses, the man of God, his sons were included with the tribe of Levi. 15 The sons of Moses were Gershom and Eliezer. 16 The descendants of Gershom included Shebuel, the family leader. 17 Eliezer had only one son, Rehabiah, the family leader. Rehabiah had numerous descendants.

18 The descendants of Izhar included Shelomith, the family leader.

19 The descendants of Hebron included Jeriah (the family leader), Amariah (the second), Jahaziel (the third), and Jekameam (the fourth).

20 The descendants of Uzziel included Micah (the family leader) and Isshiah (the second).

The Merarites

21 The descendants of Merari included Mahli and Mushi.

The sons of Mahli were Eleazar and Kish. 22 Eleazar died with no sons, only daughters. His daughters married their cousins, the sons of Kish.

23 Three of the descendants of Mushi were Mahli, Eder, and Jerimoth.

24 These were the descendants of Levi by clans, the leaders of their family groups, registered carefully by name. Each had to be twenty years old or older to qualify for service in the house of the Lord. 25 For David said, “The Lord, the God of Israel, has given us peace, and he will always live in Jerusalem. 26 Now the Levites will no longer need to carry the Tabernacle and its furnishings from place to place.” 27 In accordance with David’s final instructions, all the Levites twenty years old or older were registered for service.

28 The work of the Levites was to assist the priests, the descendants of Aaron, as they served at the house of the Lord. They also took care of the courtyards and side rooms, helped perform the ceremonies of purification, and served in many other ways in the house of God. 29 They were in charge of the sacred bread that was set out on the table, the choice flour for the grain offerings, the wafers made without yeast, the cakes cooked in olive oil, and the other mixed breads. They were also responsible to check all the weights and measures. 30 And each morning and evening they stood before the Lord to sing songs of thanks and praise to him. 31 They assisted with the burnt offerings that were presented to the Lord on Sabbath days, at new moon celebrations, and at all the appointed festivals. The required number of Levites served in the Lord’s presence at all times, following all the procedures they had been given.

32 And so, under the supervision of the priests, the Levites watched over the Tabernacle and the Temple[e] and faithfully carried out their duties of service at the house of the Lord.

Romans 3:9-31

All People Are Sinners

Well then, should we conclude that we Jews are better than others? No, not at all, for we have already shown that all people, whether Jews or Gentiles,[a] are under the power of sin. 10 As the Scriptures say,

“No one is righteous—
not even one.
11 No one is truly wise;
no one is seeking God.
12 All have turned away;
all have become useless.
No one does good,
not a single one.”[b]
13 “Their talk is foul, like the stench from an open grave.
Their tongues are filled with lies.”
“Snake venom drips from their lips.”[c]
14 “Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness.”[d]
15 “They rush to commit murder.
16 Destruction and misery always follow them.
17 They don’t know where to find peace.”[e]
18 “They have no fear of God at all.”[f]

19 Obviously, the law applies to those to whom it was given, for its purpose is to keep people from having excuses, and to show that the entire world is guilty before God. 20 For no one can ever be made right with God by doing what the law commands. The law simply shows us how sinful we are.

Christ Took Our Punishment

21 But now God has shown us a way to be made right with him without keeping the requirements of the law, as was promised in the writings of Moses[g] and the prophets long ago. 22 We are made right with God by placing our faith in Jesus Christ. And this is true for everyone who believes, no matter who we are.

23 For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard. 24 Yet God, in his grace, freely makes us right in his sight. He did this through Christ Jesus when he freed us from the penalty for our sins. 25 For God presented Jesus as the sacrifice for sin. People are made right with God when they believe that Jesus sacrificed his life, shedding his blood. This sacrifice shows that God was being fair when he held back and did not punish those who sinned in times past, 26 for he was looking ahead and including them in what he would do in this present time. God did this to demonstrate his righteousness, for he himself is fair and just, and he makes sinners right in his sight when they believe in Jesus.

27 Can we boast, then, that we have done anything to be accepted by God? No, because our acquittal is not based on obeying the law. It is based on faith. 28 So we are made right with God through faith and not by obeying the law.

29 After all, is God the God of the Jews only? Isn’t he also the God of the Gentiles? Of course he is. 30 There is only one God, and he makes people right with himself only by faith, whether they are Jews or Gentiles.[h] 31 Well then, if we emphasize faith, does this mean that we can forget about the law? Of course not! In fact, only when we have faith do we truly fulfill the law.

Psalm 12

Psalm 12

For the choir director: A psalm of David, to be accompanied by an eight-stringed instrument.[a]

Help, O Lord, for the godly are fast disappearing!
The faithful have vanished from the earth!
Neighbors lie to each other,
speaking with flattering lips and deceitful hearts.
May the Lord cut off their flattering lips
and silence their boastful tongues.
They say, “We will lie to our hearts’ content.
Our lips are our own—who can stop us?”

The Lord replies, “I have seen violence done to the helpless,
and I have heard the groans of the poor.
Now I will rise up to rescue them,
as they have longed for me to do.”
The Lord’s promises are pure,
like silver refined in a furnace,
purified seven times over.
Therefore, Lord, we know you will protect the oppressed,
preserving them forever from this lying generation,
even though the wicked strut about,
and evil is praised throughout the land.

Proverbs 19:13-14

13 A foolish child[a] is a calamity to a father;
a quarrelsome wife is as annoying as constant dripping.

14 Fathers can give their sons an inheritance of houses and wealth,
but only the Lord can give an understanding wife.

1 Chronicles 19:1-21:30, Romans 2:25-3:8, Psalms 11:1-7, Proverbs 19:10-12

Today is the 15th day of July welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I’m Brian it is great to be here with you today and every day, but especially today because today is today, and this is the only thing happening. So, it’s great to be here with you today as we take the next step forward. That next step will lead us back into the book of first Chronicles and we’re reading from the New Living Translation this week. Today first Chronicles chapter 19, 20, and 21.

Commentary:

Okay. So, in the book of Romans today Paul is essentially laying out some of the arguments that have been leveled toward the gospel that he is preaching and then speaking to those arguments because some of the things that Paul is saying, some of the things that we sort of take for granted were revolutionary things to be said at the time that Paul is saying them. Like the idea that you can be justified through faith, you just believe and then you are changed and transformed is a new way of understanding. And the idea that obeying the law isn’t actually your accumulated righteousness before God, rather that the law is there, and it shows you because it’s there it shows you when you fail and you are forgiven by grace as opposed to adhering to the law. This is new stuff which made people ask obvious questions. Then like, what’s the point of trying to live up to the law? If we’re forgiven by grace, then basically the worst that we are the more God is glorified. And, so, those are some of the arguments. Like for example Paul says, “some might say our sinfulness serves a good purpose for it helps people see how righteous God is. Isn’t it unfair then for Him to punish us?” In other words, do we not exalt God’s righteousness, even more when it’s contrasted with our own unrighteousness? Paul says, “of course not. If God were not entirely fair, how would He be qualified to judge the world? And then Paul goes on, “someone might still argue, how can God condemn me as a sinner is my dishonesty highlights His truthfulness and brings Him even more glory?” Right? So, the contrast between us and God. The worst we are, the more we make God look good is fundamentally what’s being said here. We’re quoting from the letter to the Romans. “The more we sin the better it is.” Paul says, “those who say those things deserve to be condemned.” So, what we’re looking at here is the ends justifies the means. I can do whatever I want with whoever I want, however I want and there is grace for that. And the more I fail the more glorious God looks because it’s very clear that He is high above us all. And, so, we basically have this scenario where our sin becomes worship to the Lord. It’s a strange thing that their thinking through there. And Paul is saying, that's…those are not good thoughts to have, that’s not true, this is ridiculous. It is not so. And we can read this in the letter go, “dah, like it’s not so. Everybody knows that.” But it’s really interesting to take a step back. Having this kind of material brought up in our lives to consider and then take a step back and look at the things that we do do to justify what we do. And we realize they’re trying to rationalize the ability to do whatever they want to do and then we realize we do the same kinds of things all the time. And there is plenty, plenty to unpack in the book of Romans as we’re just getting going here. So, Paul’s take on this and his understanding of the purpose of the law and his Jewish lens that he’s looking through as he writes this will be fleshed out before us in the days ahead as we take steps forward through the letter to the Romans. But this leaves us as we head toward the weekend with some things to consider, because it’s really interesting how humans, once a line is drawn that we’re not supposed to cross, we try to figure out how we can get around that or we figure out how we can get right to the line. We’re not looking at the line and going, man, that line, if I cross that line I am putting myself in danger. I will be walking a pathway that leads to destruction. Instead, we see how cozy with the wind that we can get. Like, we’re trying to figure out just how hard we can lean on grace. When the truth is, believe me, we are leaning on it plenty already. But willful sin in order to just experience grace and have an idea that God might find glory in that because we are revealing what a failure, we are which reveals what kind of perfection He is…well…according to Paul, this is not how it works. And, so, let’s consider the ways that we tiptoe along those paths that aren’t going to work.

Prayer:

Father, we invite You into that. Holy Spirit, come. We all have stories out of justifying ourselves for just about anything that we want to do regardless of whether it’s healthy or not and that is not right, and we need Your forgiveness, but we need Your leadership. Lead us into all truth, that we might obey in the name of Jesus we ask. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hello DAB community this is One Penny Saved from southwest Missouri, and I just felt compelled to pray for all things who are struggling with mental illness and addiction. And I just hear all the calls and you guys, I am old but when I started struggling with mental illness it wasn’t cool. You know, it was not talked about, and heaven forbid I get on medication. My family would have just thought that was horrible. And, so, I struggled, and I started out at 15 with an eating disorder and was just consumed with fear. And I prayed, I bargained, I pleaded with God to heal me, and I wanted my instant healing. Don’t we all want that? But what would our testimony be that we were healed instantly? So yeah, I did have to struggle, and the word of God is what transformed me. And I didn’t even notice when I was healed. It just…it just happened. A transformation happened just like a…a cocoon and a butterfly. It just happened. So, you guys I love you and just hang in there and stay in the word because the word is what will heal us, and it doesn’t take hard work. It just takes staying in it. It’s a miracle. That’s what God does. The enemy comes to steal kill and destroy but God’s word will totally heal you.

Hi Daily Audio Bible this is Mary from North Carolina I was just calling to ask for prayer. I’ve experienced several health issues throughout my life and especially in last year including dealing with MS and now I’ve got heart issues that I’m going through several tests and treatment for, and I just feel burnt out and spiritually in a dry place. So, I’d appreciate if everyone would pray that God’s will be done and all of this and that I get a refreshing by His Spirit and that depression doesn’t overtake me. I really appreciate everybody. Thank you Hardin family and I pray for everyone that that calls in. Everybody have a blessed day. It is July the 12th. Thank you. Everybody be blessed. Bye-bye.

Hello Daily Audio Bible family this is Justin again from Virginia calling in. I’m calling in, you know, after last week because it’s been a rough few days. When I called last, I was so filled with anxiety and stress it made me sick and I’d been essentially laying in bed for five days. Supposed to go back today and I still will but I only got 2 ½ hours of sleep. I woke up in the middle of the night and felt like I was under attack from stress and anxiety. I wake up and…thoughts would just hit me, and it was almost like I was left in panic, and I just could not sleep. It was so difficult. I got like 2 hours and 45 minutes. So, I need prayer because I feel I’m on empty and I don’t know how I’m supposed to get through the next few days even. I don’t know how I’m supposed to get to work and get better. I don't…I don’t know how. I pray God will make a way and I haven’t heard from him. So, please keep me in your prayers. And I just wanna pray for everyone including myself. Dear God, we’re struggling with anxiety and we’re tired and we’re stressed and we need Your help because we’re empty and we don’t know how to do it without You. So, please God help us. Please.

Hi daily audio Bible family this is Renzo from Florida and I just want to ask for a prayer request. Lately I just been really struggling with what I want to do when I grow up. I know that I gave up what I wanted to do as being I wanted to be a basketball player and I gave that up to seek after God because God told me to do Christian rap and there’s sometimes where I just feel like I want to quit I want to give up, I just…I wanna stop…stop doing Christian rap, but even stop spreading the gospel. There’s sometimes where I have no motivation to do it and I feel down. But I just ask for…just if you guys could keep me in your prayers as I pursue what God wants me to do in my life whether it be street preaching, Christian rap, I don’t know, whatever God wants me to do even if it’s simple, even if it’s working a 9 t 5 five. I have no idea. But I want to do what God calls me to do. But I really appreciate everybody and I thank you guys for everything. God bless you. I’ll always be praying for you guys even if I don’t call in sometimes. God bless you guys. Love you guys. Jesus loves you too. Bye.

Hello DAB family my name is Louis I’m a long-time listener from the beautiful mountain Rockies of Banff Alberta. I…family I’m asking if you could pray for a friend here. Her name is Libby and she’s battling stage four cancer. And I found…finally summed up the courage through this Spirit to talk to her about Jesus and she is receptive and I have this deep conviction that she is a child of God and…and trust that her name is written in this book of life so that she may know His hope Lord. So, please pray with me. Father, I’m asking You good Father to lead Libby to Jesus, draw her to Jesus Father, that she may…she may know the hope…the hope of a renewed body, the hope of seeing her daughter again and the hope above spending eternity with You Lord. Thank You, Father in Jesus’ mighty name we pray. Amen. So, yes family if you could please keep her in your prayers. Again, her name is Libby. And we are in Alberta Canada. And love you guys very much. I don’t call often at all but been listening for over a decade. So, shout out to all of you long timers. God bless.

1 Chronicles 19-21

David Defeats the Ammonites

19 Some time after this, King Nahash of the Ammonites died, and his son Hanun[a] became king. David said, “I am going to show loyalty to Hanun because his father, Nahash, was always loyal to me.” So David sent messengers to express sympathy to Hanun about his father’s death.

But when David’s ambassadors arrived in the land of Ammon, the Ammonite commanders said to Hanun, “Do you really think these men are coming here to honor your father? No! David has sent them to spy out the land so they can come in and conquer it!” So Hanun seized David’s ambassadors and shaved them, cut off their robes at the buttocks, and sent them back to David in shame.

When David heard what had happened to the men, he sent messengers to tell them, “Stay at Jericho until your beards grow out, and then come back.” For they felt deep shame because of their appearance.

When the people of Ammon realized how seriously they had angered David, Hanun and the Ammonites sent 75,000 pounds[b] of silver to hire chariots and charioteers from Aram-naharaim, Aram-maacah, and Zobah. They also hired 32,000 chariots and secured the support of the king of Maacah and his army. These forces camped at Medeba, where they were joined by the Ammonite troops that Hanun had recruited from his own towns. When David heard about this, he sent Joab and all his warriors to fight them. The Ammonite troops came out and drew up their battle lines at the entrance of the city, while the other kings positioned themselves to fight in the open fields.

10 When Joab saw that he would have to fight on both the front and the rear, he chose some of Israel’s elite troops and placed them under his personal command to fight the Arameans in the fields. 11 He left the rest of the army under the command of his brother Abishai, who was to attack the Ammonites. 12 “If the Arameans are too strong for me, then come over and help me,” Joab told his brother. “And if the Ammonites are too strong for you, I will help you. 13 Be courageous! Let us fight bravely for our people and the cities of our God. May the Lord’s will be done.”

14 When Joab and his troops attacked, the Arameans began to run away. 15 And when the Ammonites saw the Arameans running, they also ran from Abishai and retreated into the city. Then Joab returned to Jerusalem.

16 The Arameans now realized that they were no match for Israel, so they sent messengers and summoned additional Aramean troops from the other side of the Euphrates River.[c] These troops were under the command of Shobach,[d] the commander of Hadadezer’s forces.

17 When David heard what was happening, he mobilized all Israel, crossed the Jordan River, and positioned his troops in battle formation. Then David engaged the Arameans in battle, and they fought against him. 18 But again the Arameans fled from the Israelites. This time David’s forces killed 7,000 charioteers and 40,000 foot soldiers, including Shobach, the commander of their army. 19 When Hadadezer’s allies saw that they had been defeated by Israel, they surrendered to David and became his subjects. After that, the Arameans were no longer willing to help the Ammonites.

David Captures Rabbah

20 In the spring of the year,[e] when kings normally go out to war, Joab led the Israelite army in successful attacks against the land of the Ammonites. In the process he laid siege to the city of Rabbah, attacking and destroying it. However, David stayed behind in Jerusalem.

Then David went to Rabbah and removed the crown from the king’s head,[f] and it was placed on his own head. The crown was made of gold and set with gems, and he found that it weighed seventy-five pounds.[g] David took a vast amount of plunder from the city. He also made slaves of the people of Rabbah and forced them to labor with saws, iron picks, and iron axes.[h] That is how David dealt with the people of all the Ammonite towns. Then David and all the army returned to Jerusalem.

Battles against Philistine Giants

After this, war broke out with the Philistines at Gezer. As they fought, Sibbecai from Hushah killed Saph,[i] a descendant of the giants,[j] and so the Philistines were subdued.

During another battle with the Philistines, Elhanan son of Jair killed Lahmi, the brother of Goliath of Gath. The handle of Lahmi’s spear was as thick as a weaver’s beam!

In another battle with the Philistines at Gath, they encountered a huge man with six fingers on each hand and six toes on each foot, twenty-four in all, who was also a descendant of the giants. But when he defied and taunted Israel, he was killed by Jonathan, the son of David’s brother Shimea.

These Philistines were descendants of the giants of Gath, but David and his warriors killed them.

David Takes a Census

21 Satan rose up against Israel and caused David to take a census of the people of Israel. So David said to Joab and the commanders of the army, “Take a census of all the people of Israel—from Beersheba in the south to Dan in the north—and bring me a report so I may know how many there are.”

But Joab replied, “May the Lord increase the number of his people a hundred times over! But why, my lord the king, do you want to do this? Are they not all your servants? Why must you cause Israel to sin?”

But the king insisted that they take the census, so Joab traveled throughout all Israel to count the people. Then he returned to Jerusalem and reported the number of people to David. There were 1,100,000 warriors in all Israel who could handle a sword, and 470,000 in Judah. But Joab did not include the tribes of Levi and Benjamin in the census because he was so distressed at what the king had made him do.

Judgment for David’s Sin

God was very displeased with the census, and he punished Israel for it. Then David said to God, “I have sinned greatly by taking this census. Please forgive my guilt for doing this foolish thing.”

Then the Lord spoke to Gad, David’s seer. This was the message: 10 “Go and say to David, ‘This is what the Lord says: I will give you three choices. Choose one of these punishments, and I will inflict it on you.’”

11 So Gad came to David and said, “These are the choices the Lord has given you. 12 You may choose three years of famine, three months of destruction by the sword of your enemies, or three days of severe plague as the angel of the Lord brings devastation throughout the land of Israel. Decide what answer I should give the Lord who sent me.”

13 “I’m in a desperate situation!” David replied to Gad. “But let me fall into the hands of the Lord, for his mercy is very great. Do not let me fall into human hands.”

14 So the Lord sent a plague upon Israel, and 70,000 people died as a result. 15 And God sent an angel to destroy Jerusalem. But just as the angel was preparing to destroy it, the Lord relented and said to the death angel, “Stop! That is enough!” At that moment the angel of the Lord was standing by the threshing floor of Araunah[k] the Jebusite.

16 David looked up and saw the angel of the Lord standing between heaven and earth with his sword drawn, reaching out over Jerusalem. So David and the leaders of Israel put on burlap to show their deep distress and fell face down on the ground. 17 And David said to God, “I am the one who called for the census! I am the one who has sinned and done wrong! But these people are as innocent as sheep—what have they done? O Lord my God, let your anger fall against me and my family, but do not destroy your people.”

David Builds an Altar

18 Then the angel of the Lord told Gad to instruct David to go up and build an altar to the Lord on the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite. 19 So David went up to do what the Lord had commanded him through Gad. 20 Araunah, who was busy threshing wheat at the time, turned and saw the angel there. His four sons, who were with him, ran away and hid. 21 When Araunah saw David approaching, he left his threshing floor and bowed before David with his face to the ground.

22 David said to Araunah, “Let me buy this threshing floor from you at its full price. Then I will build an altar to the Lord there, so that he will stop the plague.”

23 “Take it, my lord the king, and use it as you wish,” Araunah said to David. “I will give the oxen for the burnt offerings, and the threshing boards for wood to build a fire on the altar, and the wheat for the grain offering. I will give it all to you.”

24 But King David replied to Araunah, “No, I insist on buying it for the full price. I will not take what is yours and give it to the Lord. I will not present burnt offerings that have cost me nothing!” 25 So David gave Araunah 600 pieces of gold[l] in payment for the threshing floor.

26 David built an altar there to the Lord and sacrificed burnt offerings and peace offerings. And when David prayed, the Lord answered him by sending fire from heaven to burn up the offering on the altar. 27 Then the Lord spoke to the angel, who put the sword back into its sheath.

28 When David saw that the Lord had answered his prayer, he offered sacrifices there at Araunah’s threshing floor. 29 At that time the Tabernacle of the Lord and the altar of burnt offering that Moses had made in the wilderness were located at the place of worship in Gibeon. 30 But David was not able to go there to inquire of God, because he was terrified by the drawn sword of the angel of the Lord.

Romans 2:25-3:8

25 The Jewish ceremony of circumcision has value only if you obey God’s law. But if you don’t obey God’s law, you are no better off than an uncircumcised Gentile. 26 And if the Gentiles obey God’s law, won’t God declare them to be his own people? 27 In fact, uncircumcised Gentiles who keep God’s law will condemn you Jews who are circumcised and possess God’s law but don’t obey it.

28 For you are not a true Jew just because you were born of Jewish parents or because you have gone through the ceremony of circumcision. 29 No, a true Jew is one whose heart is right with God. And true circumcision is not merely obeying the letter of the law; rather, it is a change of heart produced by the Spirit. And a person with a changed heart seeks praise[a] from God, not from people.

God Remains Faithful

Then what’s the advantage of being a Jew? Is there any value in the ceremony of circumcision? Yes, there are great benefits! First of all, the Jews were entrusted with the whole revelation of God.[b]

True, some of them were unfaithful; but just because they were unfaithful, does that mean God will be unfaithful? Of course not! Even if everyone else is a liar, God is true. As the Scriptures say about him,

“You will be proved right in what you say,
and you will win your case in court.”[c]

“But,” some might say, “our sinfulness serves a good purpose, for it helps people see how righteous God is. Isn’t it unfair, then, for him to punish us?” (This is merely a human point of view.) Of course not! If God were not entirely fair, how would he be qualified to judge the world? “But,” someone might still argue, “how can God condemn me as a sinner if my dishonesty highlights his truthfulness and brings him more glory?” And some people even slander us by claiming that we say, “The more we sin, the better it is!” Those who say such things deserve to be condemned.

Psalm 11

Psalm 11

For the choir director: A psalm of David.

I trust in the Lord for protection.
So why do you say to me,
“Fly like a bird to the mountains for safety!
The wicked are stringing their bows
and fitting their arrows on the bowstrings.
They shoot from the shadows
at those whose hearts are right.
The foundations of law and order have collapsed.
What can the righteous do?”

But the Lord is in his holy Temple;
the Lord still rules from heaven.
He watches everyone closely,
examining every person on earth.
The Lord examines both the righteous and the wicked.
He hates those who love violence.
He will rain down blazing coals and burning sulfur on the wicked,
punishing them with scorching winds.
For the righteous Lord loves justice.
The virtuous will see his face.

Proverbs 19:10-12

10 It isn’t right for a fool to live in luxury
or for a slave to rule over princes!

11 Sensible people control their temper;
they earn respect by overlooking wrongs.

12 The king’s anger is like a lion’s roar,
but his favor is like dew on the grass.

1 Chronicles 16:37-18:17, Romans 2:1-24, Psalm 10:16-18, Proverbs 19:8-9

Today is the 14th day of July, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian. It is wonderful to be here with you today, as we gather around the Global Campfire and take the next step forward together. That next step will lead us in the Old Testament, back into the book of first Chronicles and in the New Testament, into the letter to the Romans. We’re reading from the New Living Translation this week, first Chronicles chapter 16 verse 37 through 18 verse 17.

Commentary:

Okay so, in the letter to the Romans today, we read, as we were concluding our reading for today that the Gentiles blasphemed the name of God because of you, which is a very direct thing to say. And now that were kinda getting into the letters of Paul, we should sort of settle into this personality or the way that he writes. It’s very densely packed, but it’s very direct. I mean, to say that your life, your witness, your words make other people blaspheme the Lord, like, if you are the witness for God, then you cause other people to blaspheme the Lord, because of your representation of who God is. That’s direct, maybe that’s even fighting words but that’s direct, and that’s kinda how the apostle Paul is. He was raised a devout Jew from his birth and was a Pharisee, an educated Pharisee in the Mosaic law. One of the most rigorous things to be, would be a Pharisee, in terms of trying to adhere to the Mosaic law and obey it perfectly. And so very often, we find his words to be very direct. And the reason that he’s being direct like this, is that he is calling out hypocrisy. And I mean, we probably all know what hypocrisy is, right, being double-faced or pretending to have a certain lifestyle or spirituality that you actually don’t have in secret, you’re pretending. I mean, basically, we could say, it’s like, it’s kind of like wearing a mask. And not like the COVID masks we had to wear when the pandemics is all going on. Like, all the time, like stepping outside your door and pretending to be something that you’re not or pretending to be more than you really are or pretending to be way less than you really are. But in secret you’re not the same person, hypocrisy. Or to just quote from the letter to the Romans, “when you say they are wicked and should be punished, you are condemning yourself, for you who judge others do these very same things. Since you judge others for doing these things, why do you think you can avoid God’s judgment, when you do the same things?” Paul is essentially trying to expose the, this doesn’t do anything, and this doesn’t go anywhere. And this doesn’t help anybody. And it’s profoundly missing the point of what we’re here to do. Paul says and I quote, “don’t you see how wonderfully, kind, tolerant and patient God is with you? Does this mean nothing to you? Can’t you see that His kindness is intended to turn you from your sin?” And so, when we understand that we are consuming mountains of grace to live every day, but then turn our eyes and mouths and ears and senses of judgment on other people, for things that we’ve done. That’s pretty hypocritical, especially having the full knowledge that God is fathering us patiently, kindly, He’s being tolerant with us. Because as Paul says, His kindness is intended to turn you from your sin. So how is it that, the, if God’s kindness, woos us and compels us away from evil and the things that would separate us from Him, how is it that we think our judgment without any kindness, tolerance or patience, is gonna woo anybody, anywhere? I mean, if Paul’s right and it is God’s kindness that is intended to turn us away from sin and we are supposed to be like Christ, then wouldn’t it also be true that our kindness and not our hypocrisy, and not our judgment, can be part of God’s work in wooing people away from sin? And so, let’s take some time to consider this today and consider the way in which Paul, sums up the point, if you teach others, why don’t you teach yourself? You tell others not to steal, but do you steal? You say it’s wrong to commit adultery, but do you commit adultery? And we could insert any of the things that are strongholds or have been strongholds and trip us up, that we may judge another person for, when we know full well, how difficult it is to overcome that ourselves and don’t always and put on the costume of the hypocrite. Paul boils it down by saying, no wonder the Scriptures say the Gentiles blasphemed the name of God because of you. And I don’t, I don’t want that. You don’t want that, right? You don’t want to know the people that literally denounce and blaspheme God because of our example of who He is. That is what hypocrisy can do and that is the point and that is why Paul’s being direct. And we might as well buckle up and get used to it, cause now that we’re in the letters the Bible, there are plenty of things that we’re going to need to look at and examine and consider, as we continue our journey forward, step-by-step, day-by-day.

Prayer:

And Father, we thank You, we thank You for that, we thank You that the Scriptures will indeed do a staring contest with us, will look us in the eyes with the voice of truth and not flinch or look away, so that it penetrates within our hearts, so that we can’t sidestep, so that we can’t run away, so that we do have to indeed, deeply consider, what our lives are saying. And may it never be said of us, that someone blasphemed Your name Lord, because of us. And if that has ever happened, forgive us, Lord, we, that is mortifying, and it shows us very clearly that we have a lot of power You have bestowed upon us, the power to be Your ambassadors in this world. May we be nothing less than an accurate portrayal of Your love for us, in the way that it changes everything. Come, Holy Spirit into this, we all need You. Change us from within, show us the path in the name of Jesus, we ask. Amen.

Prayer and Encouragements:

Hello DABers, this is Joyfully Jo. I am calling about Brian’s thoughts at the end of the reading today, July 11th. Just want to say thank you Brian. All you had to say was really beautiful and perfect and I am currently on a little hiatus because I am a caretaker for my mom. And my daughter and my husband graciously told me to take some time off and so I’ve just been getting into God’s word and meditating on it, and I love what you said about honesty, well it’s the Scripture. Honesty is better than righteous, haste makes mistakes. Getting excited before we really understand the situation causes us to make bad choices, slow down and get all the details. I just love that. You also said, I think it was in your prayer, that we need to walk in wisdom more than ever before and not to wear God like a cape or a magical power and you ask for God to lead us into all truth, and all wisdom. And then immediately after that was a caller, she didn’t give her name, but she was so excited about Skip Morgan, faith comes by hearing, hearing, hearing and I just loved your message and I wanted to say thank you for that. And Skip, I’m praying for you. I know about your surgery and I’m praying.

To my brother Travis. Travis, this is your brother Vultamore. I’m going to encourage you. I know you have some angst about being called to the ministry in such a late time in your life. But I too, was called into ministry fairly late in my life. And I learned a long time ago that God doesn’t call the equipped, but He equips the called. And so let me pray for you. Father, in Jesus’ name, I pray that you continuously equip Travis for Your work in his ministry that will bring You glory and honor and that would edify and build up people to Your salvation and to You. And to Your honor, oh God. Father, help him to forge ahead, according to your perfect will in his life. And may he fulfill all the purposes you have for him, in the matchless name of Jesus Christ. Amen. Thanks Travis, love you brother. Talk to you later. Bye.

Good morning, Daily Audio Bible Community. This is Diane Olive and Jeff Brown from Newburg, Indiana. Shalom, shalom, let’s throw our logs on the fire together. Oh, my goodness, I love this readings from Brian today. I just love them; I love the book of Romans. I love, especially chapter 7 which deals with the sins of the flash and chapter 8, that deals with walking in the spirit. This is very helpful for those who called in prayer request today and praise reports. And every single one of them related to me. One talked about a lady that needed prayer, would just open up her heart and told the truth about things she needed. And it was encouraging because I have done that. I have finally opened up my heart and the told the truth about the things I’ve done. And God’s not gonna punish me for that; He’s going to encourage me. So, honey, whoever she prayed for, I agree with you. I agree with you. Lay it all out in the open to God. The devil cannot lie to you anymore. As long as you’re staying honest and above board before Him, confessing your failures, your, the things you struggle with, he can’t use those against you. And forgive yourself. I’ve been my own worst enemy so many times. The hardest thing for me is just forgive my ….

Hi, this is Lavishly Loved by the Lord. I’ve been a DAB listener now for little over a year and I’ve been called in, maybe twice, for the same problem. I’ve been praying now for about three years that I could get a new position at work. At work, things have been getting increasingly harder, more difficult, more challenging and the light at the end of the tunnel, is slowly disappearing. And I wasn’t sure I could do it anymore. So, I applied for a position, when it was over, I was told that it was given to somebody else but that someone on the team is going to resign, moving out of town and they wanted to offer me that position. While I was waiting for that to happen, I applied for another position and after the interview is over, I received an email stating that the first position was given to somebody else. My safety net, gone. My backup plan, gone. All my eggs now are in the one basket. Well, I finally got an email stating that that second position I applied for, was given to someone else. So, I prayed about it. And I said, okay, Lord, this is where you want me to stay so, Holy Spirit, help me get through it. Started changing gears and getting ready for the new year to be positive and have a good year. Got home from work and received a phone call stating that it was the situation of everybody thought the other person had called me. But the position that I was promised was officially mine and it only took three years. So, if you’re in an impossible situation and you don’t think the Lord is listening, He is, just be patient, keep praying. Know that the Lord loves you and He’s working behind the scenes to make what’s the best outcome for you, come to fruition. I love you. Have a great day, keep praying. Keep the faith. Bye.

Hi, I’m Sherry Youngward. I’ve been listening to DAB for many, many, many years but I’ve only called a couple times. I’m actually taking my version of the long walk today, July 12th because on the 7th I was recovering from COVID, and my long walk was celebrating I could go from my bedroom to the kitchen and fry and egg. So, I’m doing a little better. And right before I put my phone away, I just want to say that I’m so grateful for this community and all that you all mean to me, knowing that when somebody calls and puts in a prayer request and the voice starts to crack and they fall apart, just know that, in a few days so many people are gonna call and stand by their side and pray for them. I just love the compassion and just the care of this community. And when Brian made an announcement a while back about going to Israel, but he kind of left us in suspense about this secret announcement. Just for a second, I thought oh no, is he leaving.  Did Elon Musk buy the Daily Audio Bible? Okay, I didn’t that, but I did just think for a second, what if I didn’t have this. So, I just wanted to call to say I’m so grateful. I just want to pray for this community, pray for the Hardin’s. Pray for the Holy Spirit to fill and refresh and revive, Lord and bless in every way. Plus, those that are struggling today, Lord. Spark hope, in Jesus’ name.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Thursday July 14, 2022 (NIV)

1 Chronicles 16:37-18:17

Worship at Jerusalem and Gibeon

37 David arranged for Asaph and his fellow Levites to serve regularly before the Ark of the Lord’s Covenant, doing whatever needed to be done each day. 38 This group included Obed-edom (son of Jeduthun), Hosah, and sixty-eight other Levites as gatekeepers.

39 Meanwhile, David stationed Zadok the priest and his fellow priests at the Tabernacle of the Lord at the place of worship in Gibeon, where they continued to minister before the Lord. 40 They sacrificed the regular burnt offerings to the Lord each morning and evening on the altar set aside for that purpose, obeying everything written in the Law of the Lord, as he had commanded Israel. 41 David also appointed Heman, Jeduthun, and the others chosen by name to give thanks to the Lord, for “his faithful love endures forever.” 42 They used their trumpets, cymbals, and other instruments to accompany their songs of praise to God.[a] And the sons of Jeduthun were appointed as gatekeepers.

43 Then all the people returned to their homes, and David turned and went home to bless his own family.

The Lord’s Covenant Promise to David

17 When David was settled in his palace, he summoned Nathan the prophet. “Look,” David said, “I am living in a beautiful cedar palace,[b] but the Ark of the Lord’s Covenant is out there under a tent!”

Nathan replied to David, “Do whatever you have in mind, for God is with you.”

But that same night God said to Nathan,

“Go and tell my servant David, ‘This is what the Lord has declared: You are not the one to build a house for me to live in. I have never lived in a house, from the day I brought the Israelites out of Egypt until this very day. My home has always been a tent, moving from one place to another in a Tabernacle. Yet no matter where I have gone with the Israelites, I have never once complained to Israel’s leaders, the shepherds of my people. I have never asked them, “Why haven’t you built me a beautiful cedar house?”’

“Now go and say to my servant David, ‘This is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies has declared: I took you from tending sheep in the pasture and selected you to be the leader of my people Israel. I have been with you wherever you have gone, and I have destroyed all your enemies before your eyes. Now I will make your name as famous as anyone who has ever lived on the earth! And I will provide a homeland for my people Israel, planting them in a secure place where they will never be disturbed. Evil nations won’t oppress them as they’ve done in the past, 10 starting from the time I appointed judges to rule my people Israel. And I will defeat all your enemies.

“‘Furthermore, I declare that the Lord will build a house for you—a dynasty of kings! 11 For when you die and join your ancestors, I will raise up one of your descendants, one of your sons, and I will make his kingdom strong. 12 He is the one who will build a house—a temple—for me. And I will secure his throne forever. 13 I will be his father, and he will be my son. I will never take my favor from him as I took it from the one who ruled before you. 14 I will confirm him as king over my house and my kingdom for all time, and his throne will be secure forever.’”

15 So Nathan went back to David and told him everything the Lord had said in this vision.

David’s Prayer of Thanks

16 Then King David went in and sat before the Lord and prayed,

“Who am I, O Lord God, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far? 17 And now, O God, in addition to everything else, you speak of giving your servant a lasting dynasty! You speak as though I were someone very great,[c] O Lord God!

18 “What more can I say to you about the way you have honored me? You know what your servant is really like. 19 For the sake of your servant, O Lord, and according to your will, you have done all these great things and have made them known.

20 “O Lord, there is no one like you. We have never even heard of another God like you! 21 What other nation on earth is like your people Israel? What other nation, O God, have you redeemed from slavery to be your own people? You made a great name for yourself when you redeemed your people from Egypt. You performed awesome miracles and drove out the nations that stood in their way. 22 You chose Israel to be your very own people forever, and you, O Lord, became their God.

23 “And now, O Lord, I am your servant; do as you have promised concerning me and my family. May it be a promise that will last forever. 24 And may your name be established and honored forever so that everyone will say, ‘The Lord of Heaven’s Armies, the God of Israel, is Israel’s God!’ And may the house of your servant David continue before you forever.

25 “O my God, I have been bold enough to pray to you because you have revealed to your servant that you will build a house for him—a dynasty of kings! 26 For you are God, O Lord. And you have promised these good things to your servant. 27 And now, it has pleased you to bless the house of your servant, so that it will continue forever before you. For when you grant a blessing, O Lord, it is an eternal blessing!”

David’s Military Victories

18 After this, David defeated and subdued the Philistines by conquering Gath and its surrounding towns. David also conquered the land of Moab, and the Moabites who were spared became David’s subjects and paid him tribute money.

David also destroyed the forces of Hadadezer, king of Zobah, as far as Hamath,[d] when Hadadezer marched out to strengthen his control along the Euphrates River. David captured 1,000 chariots, 7,000 charioteers, and 20,000 foot soldiers. He crippled all the chariot horses except enough for 100 chariots.

When Arameans from Damascus arrived to help King Hadadezer, David killed 22,000 of them. Then he placed several army garrisons[e] in Damascus, the Aramean capital, and the Arameans became David’s subjects and paid him tribute money. So the Lord made David victorious wherever he went.

David brought the gold shields of Hadadezer’s officers to Jerusalem, along with a large amount of bronze from Hadadezer’s towns of Tebah[f] and Cun. Later Solomon melted the bronze and molded it into the great bronze basin called the Sea, the pillars, and the various bronze articles used at the Temple.

When King Toi[g] of Hamath heard that David had destroyed the entire army of King Hadadezer of Zobah, 10 he sent his son Joram[h] to congratulate King David for his successful campaign. Hadadezer and Toi had been enemies and were often at war. Joram presented David with many gifts of gold, silver, and bronze.

11 King David dedicated all these gifts to the Lord, along with the silver and gold he had taken from the other nations—from Edom, Moab, Ammon, Philistia, and Amalek.

12 Abishai son of Zeruiah destroyed 18,000 Edomites in the Valley of Salt. 13 He placed army garrisons in Edom, and all the Edomites became David’s subjects. In fact, the Lord made David victorious wherever he went.

14 So David reigned over all Israel and did what was just and right for all his people. 15 Joab son of Zeruiah was commander of the army. Jehoshaphat son of Ahilud was the royal historian. 16 Zadok son of Ahitub and Ahimelech[i] son of Abiathar were the priests. Seraiah[j] was the court secretary. 17 Benaiah son of Jehoiada was captain of the king’s bodyguard.[k] And David’s sons served as the king’s chief assistants.

Romans 2:1-24

God’s Judgment of Sin

You may think you can condemn such people, but you are just as bad, and you have no excuse! When you say they are wicked and should be punished, you are condemning yourself, for you who judge others do these very same things. And we know that God, in his justice, will punish anyone who does such things. Since you judge others for doing these things, why do you think you can avoid God’s judgment when you do the same things? Don’t you see how wonderfully kind, tolerant, and patient God is with you? Does this mean nothing to you? Can’t you see that his kindness is intended to turn you from your sin?

But because you are stubborn and refuse to turn from your sin, you are storing up terrible punishment for yourself. For a day of anger is coming, when God’s righteous judgment will be revealed. He will judge everyone according to what they have done. He will give eternal life to those who keep on doing good, seeking after the glory and honor and immortality that God offers. But he will pour out his anger and wrath on those who live for themselves, who refuse to obey the truth and instead live lives of wickedness. There will be trouble and calamity for everyone who keeps on doing what is evil—for the Jew first and also for the Gentile.[a] 10 But there will be glory and honor and peace from God for all who do good—for the Jew first and also for the Gentile. 11 For God does not show favoritism.

12 When the Gentiles sin, they will be destroyed, even though they never had God’s written law. And the Jews, who do have God’s law, will be judged by that law when they fail to obey it. 13 For merely listening to the law doesn’t make us right with God. It is obeying the law that makes us right in his sight. 14 Even Gentiles, who do not have God’s written law, show that they know his law when they instinctively obey it, even without having heard it. 15 They demonstrate that God’s law is written in their hearts, for their own conscience and thoughts either accuse them or tell them they are doing right. 16 And this is the message I proclaim—that the day is coming when God, through Christ Jesus, will judge everyone’s secret life.

The Jews and the Law

17 You who call yourselves Jews are relying on God’s law, and you boast about your special relationship with him. 18 You know what he wants; you know what is right because you have been taught his law. 19 You are convinced that you are a guide for the blind and a light for people who are lost in darkness. 20 You think you can instruct the ignorant and teach children the ways of God. For you are certain that God’s law gives you complete knowledge and truth.

21 Well then, if you teach others, why don’t you teach yourself? You tell others not to steal, but do you steal? 22 You say it is wrong to commit adultery, but do you commit adultery? You condemn idolatry, but do you use items stolen from pagan temples?[b] 23 You are so proud of knowing the law, but you dishonor God by breaking it. 24 No wonder the Scriptures say, “The Gentiles blaspheme the name of God because of you.”[c]

Psalm 10:16-18

16 The Lord is king forever and ever!
The godless nations will vanish from the land.
17 Lord, you know the hopes of the helpless.
Surely you will hear their cries and comfort them.
18 You will bring justice to the orphans and the oppressed,
so mere people can no longer terrify them.

1 Chronicles 15:1-16:36, Romans 1:18-32, Psalms 10:1-15, Proverb 19:6-7

Today is the 13th day of July welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I’m Brian it’s wonderful to be together around the Global Campfire today as we continue to move forward together on our adventure through the Bible. This week we are reading from the New Living Translation and working our way through the book of first Chronicles in the Old Testament, and we’ve just gotten started in the letter to the Romans in the New Testament. And, so, we will pick up the story there when we get there, but first, first Chronicles chapter 15 verse 1 through 16, verse 36.

Commentary:

Okay. Let’s talk a little bit about what is going on in the book of first Chronicles. And of course, this should sound somewhat familiar because we have been through some of these stories before. And, so, today we have the telling of the Ark of the Covenant being brought into the city of David. As we know from here in first Chronicles but also in the story that was told in second Samuel, that the ark was loaded onto an ox cart and carried toward the city of David and the oxen stumbled along the way and a man named Uzzah reached out to steady the cart and he died, touched the Ark of the Covenant and died, which brought fear into David and everybody else. We see here in today’s reading that they kinda figured it out. The Ark of the Covenant wasn’t to be carried on an ox cart or any sort of cart. The Ark of the Covenant as specified in the Mosaic law was to be carried by polls on the shoulders of the Levites. And once they did that, they were successful in bringing the Ark of the Covenant into the city of David. And it’s easy enough to read it and go like, who cares, you know lime we’re just kinda moving through this story, this historical account of bringing the Ark of the Covenant back into the city of David, who cares about this? But they cared about it. And as we look a little bit deeper here we should care about it to because God cared about it. And as we look spiritually into our own lives from the Scriptures, this isn’t unlike the story that we read, remember of Ballam and Balak the king of Moab when the children of Israel were still on their wilderness journey and the Moabites were freaking out and so they got Ballam to come and curse Jacob, Israel. But he couldn’t because God was not cursing them. And remember the king saying, well, come over here and look at it from this angle and maybe you can curse them from there. And, so, they built an altar, and he couldn’t curse them from there. Well come over here and look at it from this angle. And we talked about that from the perspective of our own lives, how we have a propensity to do stuff like that. We want something, we want to invoke God into getting this thing, we’re moving in this direction and maybe we’re feeling a check in our spirit or some resistance and so we just want to look at it from another angle until we can get the answer that we want. The story that we read today isn’t dissimilar. How the Ark of the Covenant was to be transported had been incorporated into the law. It was clearly established how this was supposed to be. But then thinking, well, we’re bringing the Ark of the Covenant into the holy city, so however we get it there let’s just get it there in one piece and let’s put it on this cart and carry it ended up being in disobedience to God, which allows us to look into our own lives and see the ways in which we want to invoke God and then do it our own way and then blame God if it doesn’t work out right. But it seems safe enough to say that in this story we learn a lesson that we can’t really invoke God if we’re not going to obey God. And if we would think on that for a while, slow down and invite the Holy Spirit and examine the directions that we have taken we may learn a lot about ourselves in the process. Because if we’re going to invoke God and not obey God, then we’re using God. We’re inviting God to be a character or a participant in our story and not the other way around. And the Bible teaches us many many things but one of the things that it teaches us is how backward we can get and still think that were going forward. And, so, it’s an opportunity for some self-reflection today and examination and inviting God, not only to give us clear and specific direction, but also whether or not we are living our lives doing our duty and serving God or whether we’re inviting God to obey our whims and wishes. One of those ways is backward and it’s probably apparent and it’s just a matter of which way are we going.

Prayer:

Father, we invite You into that because this is an opportunity for course correction. This is an opportunity for us to sit down and see where we’re going and how we got there and how we’ve invoked You in this process and whether or not we are actually in obedience to You or simply expecting You to do what we want You to do. So, come Holy Spirit into that as we consider it today and as we look at where were going. We pray this in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Announcements:

dailyaudiobible.com, is the website, its home base, it’s where you find out what’s going on around here. The Daily Audio Bible app is also a fantastic resource for doing the same thing. So, if you don’t have the Daily Audio Bible app just search for Daily Audio Bible in whatever app store that you use for the device that you have. So, whether using the app or the websites you’ll find a navigation system and that is very common in website technology, how do you get around this place. And that’s up at the top.

In one of those tabs you’ll find the Community section and that is where you can go to find different links on social media to get connected. It is also the place where the Prayer Wall lives. And we talk about the Prayer Wall often enough because it is a beautiful place, a little oasis here around the Global Campfire where no matter what time of day it is, no matter what time of night it is, no matter what season of year it is or what week it is or for that matter, no matter what’s going on in our lives we have a place that we can go and share. If we can’t sleep, we can share our story. If anxiety is really swirling us around so we don’t know which way is up anymore we can come share our story. No matter what’s going on we can ask our brothers and sisters who are on the same journey with us who are showing up around the Global Campfire every day taking the next step forward together every day, we can share our story, knowing that our brothers and sisters are there and do care and will pray. And obviously, it’s not just for we who have prayer requests or things going on that we need prayer about it’s also for we who are willing to go and pray for our brothers and sisters who are struggling. Sometimes we’re up, sometimes we’re down. When we’re down we need prayer. When we’re up we need to offer prayer. Of course, that’s not like in a black-and-white rule. We can ask for prayer when things are going great and we can pray for each other when things are not that well. In fact, one of the greatest things about interceding on behalf of others is that it pulls our focus and attention away from the things that we’re struggling with. And, so, the Prayer Wall is a beautiful place. It is very important as we take this journey in a year through the Bible that we are aware of it. And you can find the Prayer Wall in the Community section whether you’re using the app or using the web. So, check that out.

If you want to partner with the Daily Audio Bible, if this mission to bring the spoken word of God read fresh every day and offered free to anyone, anywhere, anytime and to build community around the rhythm of showing up around the Global Campfire every day, if that is life-giving and meaningful to your journey then thank you especially as we navigate summertime for your partnership. There is a link on the homepage at dailyaudiobible.com. If you’re using the app, you can press the Give button in the upper right-hand corner or the mailing address is PO Box 1996 Spring Hill Tennessee 37174.

And, of course, if you have prayer requests store encouragement like we were just talking about, you can hit the Hotline button in the app, that’s a little red button up at the top or you can dial 877-942-4253.

And that’s it for today. I’m Brian I love you and I’ll be waiting for you here tomorrow.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hi DAB family I’m calling because my car was broken into and my purse was stolen and it’s just really upsetting, sad really. And I can empathize with the trucker whose identification was stolen. And I pray that your situation is going alright, and no one used your information in any dishonest or malicious way. You know and that’s what I hope for myself too. And, so, if you all would just pray. I wanted to pray for whoever it was that did steal. Heavenly Father I just lift up whoever it was that…that broke into my car and took my…my things. I just pray that whatever their need is Lord that You would meet it, that You would meet them where they are and that that person would find You and…and that You would provide all their needs, that they would come to a place of repentance. And I’m really hoping that my things would be returned. But either way my identity is in You God and I know that You will make away and I know that You will make something good of this all. But I do lift up that person that would just be upon them and bless them with whatever they need if they were in that desperate of a situation to take from someone. And I just pray that Lord, You would help me to put my full confidence in You always and not in people or the things of this world. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Hey DAB family it’s Travis from Alberta Canada. You know, I woke up from a deep sleep and it’s three o'clock in the morning and this feeling of…of depression and anxiety and, you know, the feeling of not really knowing who I am anymore in a lot of ways came over me. And when depression and all that hits, anxiety hits, I usually go to my journal I just start writing. I start writing these feelings out. And I was like, you know what, I’m just gonna go and put on the DAB and just spend time with God. And, you know, it’s funny the…the feeling of I don’t even know who I am anymore, that question God answered real quick when I just got into the presence of my Father. And the answer was simply God just saying you are my son and you come alive in my presence. That’s the truth. Family, these moments with the Lord wherever it may be, be it 3:00 o'clock in the morning or 9:00 o'clock in the morning or 9:00 o'clock at night these are the moments we come alive. These moments don’t let them slip by. You are all loved. Bye family.

Good morning, good afternoon, good evening DAB family wherever you are in the world. This is Matthew from the UK. Please family I would love that you stand with me in prayers because I feel like I am under attack at the moment, and I have an eye problem. My better half has just recently been diagnosed with diabetes. My son was supposed to graduate…have his BSE. This summer has __. I have a water leak in the house and though that has been fixed I have rat infestation. I just believe that all of this is an attack of the enemy and though I know that when the enemy comes in the flood the Lord God almighty will raise and stand up against him. And, so, please family I want you to join me in prayers against the attack of the enemy. Thank you so much for all your prayers in the past and I lift up all members of DAB family before God almighty, those who have laid their problems at the throne of God, that God in His infinite mercy will grant your request in the name of Jesus. Thank you, Brian for this podcast. It’s been…it’s been a source…a source of encouragement to all that listen to it. Keep up the good work. Thank you, Blind Tony for all your poems I find you very encouraging. May God bless this family. In Jesus’ name I pray.

Slave of Jesus in North Carolina I heard what you said at the end of your…your message on the…I think it was the 10th of July’s readings and I…I needed to hear that, what you said about your wife and about just the words of faith you spoke saying that you were so confident and so assured that God would…that God will reach her, maybe not through you but that God has a definite plan and that God is…is going for her. Man, that was, I…I so desperately hope that same thing for…for not just you guys but for so many people in my life, so many people I love very dearly who are not believers but…but also for myself even. And yeah, just…just hearing that was…it hit really hard. So, thank you for calling in and sharing those words. I hope that is the case for so so many of us. So, thank you.

Hey everyone my name is Jezz this is the first time I’m hopping on here and the Daily Audio Bible has been a really awesome resource for me personally helping me grow in my walk with the Lord and it’s also really awesome to see that we have a community page and community here that lifts up each other, encourages one another and prays for one another in what…through ever situation as we ought to as the body of Christ. With that said I’m just asking that you keep me and my friends in your prayers. One of my friends that I’ve been renting an apartment with for about a year has been unemployed for about four months now. So, it’s been making, you know, things difficult financially for us trying to stay on top of all of our bills. And it has been a little stressful on my end since I’m the only one working right now. So, I just asked that you…you guys pray, agree with us that he will find a good job soon. And also, prayers for provision in general. We’re at the end of our lease and we’re actually getting ready to move into a house with another friend of ours and it’s really…that’s a whole testimony for another time that I will definitely share. But we’re just all believing that this transition will be smooth, and that God will provide everything we need financially and otherwise. So, we’d really appreciate if you guys agree with us in that. And other than that, I thank you guys for taking the time to listen. And I just pray Lord that whatever we all may be going through in this season that we remember you will provide. Thank you.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Wednesday July 13, 2022 (NIV)

1 Chronicles 15:1-16:36

Preparing to Move the Ark

15 David now built several buildings for himself in the City of David. He also prepared a place for the Ark of God and set up a special tent for it. Then he commanded, “No one except the Levites may carry the Ark of God. The Lord has chosen them to carry the Ark of the Lord and to serve him forever.”

Then David summoned all Israel to Jerusalem to bring the Ark of the Lord to the place he had prepared for it. This is the number of the descendants of Aaron (the priests) and the Levites who were called together:

From the clan of Kohath, 120, with Uriel as their leader.

From the clan of Merari, 220, with Asaiah as their leader.

From the clan of Gershon,[a] 130, with Joel as their leader.

From the descendants of Elizaphan, 200, with Shemaiah as their leader.

From the descendants of Hebron, 80, with Eliel as their leader.

10 From the descendants of Uzziel, 112, with Amminadab as their leader.

11 Then David summoned the priests, Zadok and Abiathar, and these Levite leaders: Uriel, Asaiah, Joel, Shemaiah, Eliel, and Amminadab. 12 He said to them, “You are the leaders of the Levite families. You must purify yourselves and all your fellow Levites, so you can bring the Ark of the Lord, the God of Israel, to the place I have prepared for it. 13 Because you Levites did not carry the Ark the first time, the anger of the Lord our God burst out against us. We failed to ask God how to move it properly.” 14 So the priests and the Levites purified themselves in order to bring the Ark of the Lord, the God of Israel, to Jerusalem. 15 Then the Levites carried the Ark of God on their shoulders with its carrying poles, just as the Lord had instructed Moses.

16 David also ordered the Levite leaders to appoint a choir of Levites who were singers and musicians to sing joyful songs to the accompaniment of harps, lyres, and cymbals. 17 So the Levites appointed Heman son of Joel along with his fellow Levites: Asaph son of Berekiah, and Ethan son of Kushaiah from the clan of Merari. 18 The following men were chosen as their assistants: Zechariah, Jaaziel,[b] Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Unni, Eliab, Benaiah, Maaseiah, Mattithiah, Eliphelehu, Mikneiah, and the gatekeepers—Obed-edom and Jeiel.

19 The musicians Heman, Asaph, and Ethan were chosen to sound the bronze cymbals. 20 Zechariah, Aziel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Unni, Eliab, Maaseiah, and Benaiah were chosen to play the harps.[c] 21 Mattithiah, Eliphelehu, Mikneiah, Obed-edom, Jeiel, and Azaziah were chosen to play the lyres.[d] 22 Kenaniah, the head Levite, was chosen as the choir leader because of his skill.

23 Berekiah and Elkanah were chosen to guard[e] the Ark. 24 Shebaniah, Joshaphat, Nethanel, Amasai, Zechariah, Benaiah, and Eliezer—all of whom were priests—were chosen to blow the trumpets as they marched in front of the Ark of God. Obed-edom and Jehiah were chosen to guard the Ark.

Moving the Ark to Jerusalem

25 Then David and the elders of Israel and the generals of the army[f] went to the house of Obed-edom to bring the Ark of the Lord’s Covenant up to Jerusalem with a great celebration. 26 And because God was clearly helping the Levites as they carried the Ark of the Lord’s Covenant, they sacrificed seven bulls and seven rams.

27 David was dressed in a robe of fine linen, as were all the Levites who carried the Ark, and also the singers, and Kenaniah the choir leader. David was also wearing a priestly garment.[g] 28 So all Israel brought up the Ark of the Lord’s Covenant with shouts of joy, the blowing of rams’ horns and trumpets, the crashing of cymbals, and loud playing on harps and lyres.

29 But as the Ark of the Lord’s Covenant entered the City of David, Michal, the daughter of Saul, looked down from her window. When she saw King David skipping about and laughing with joy, she was filled with contempt for him.

16 They brought the Ark of God and placed it inside the special tent David had prepared for it. And they presented burnt offerings and peace offerings to God. When he had finished his sacrifices, David blessed the people in the name of the Lord. Then he gave to every man and woman in all Israel a loaf of bread, a cake of dates,[h] and a cake of raisins.

David appointed the following Levites to lead the people in worship before the Ark of the Lord—to invoke his blessings, to give thanks, and to praise the Lord, the God of Israel. Asaph, the leader of this group, sounded the cymbals. Second to him was Zechariah, followed by Jeiel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Mattithiah, Eliab, Benaiah, Obed-edom, and Jeiel. They played the harps and lyres. The priests, Benaiah and Jahaziel, played the trumpets regularly before the Ark of God’s Covenant.

David’s Song of Praise

On that day David gave to Asaph and his fellow Levites this song of thanksgiving to the Lord:

Give thanks to the Lord and proclaim his greatness.
Let the whole world know what he has done.
Sing to him; yes, sing his praises.
Tell everyone about his wonderful deeds.
10 Exult in his holy name;
rejoice, you who worship the Lord.
11 Search for the Lord and for his strength;
continually seek him.
12 Remember the wonders he has performed,
his miracles, and the rulings he has given,
13 you children of his servant Israel,
you descendants of Jacob, his chosen ones.

14 He is the Lord our God.
His justice is seen throughout the land.
15 Remember his covenant forever—
the commitment he made to a thousand generations.
16 This is the covenant he made with Abraham
and the oath he swore to Isaac.
17 He confirmed it to Jacob as a decree,
and to the people of Israel as a never-ending covenant:
18 “I will give you the land of Canaan
as your special possession.”

19 He said this when you were few in number,
a tiny group of strangers in Canaan.
20 They wandered from nation to nation,
from one kingdom to another.
21 Yet he did not let anyone oppress them.
He warned kings on their behalf:
22 “Do not touch my chosen people,
and do not hurt my prophets.”

23 Let the whole earth sing to the Lord!
Each day proclaim the good news that he saves.
24 Publish his glorious deeds among the nations.
Tell everyone about the amazing things he does.
25 Great is the Lord! He is most worthy of praise!
He is to be feared above all gods.
26 The gods of other nations are mere idols,
but the Lord made the heavens!
27 Honor and majesty surround him;
strength and joy fill his dwelling.

28 O nations of the world, recognize the Lord,
recognize that the Lord is glorious and strong.
29 Give to the Lord the glory he deserves!
Bring your offering and come into his presence.
Worship the Lord in all his holy splendor.
30 Let all the earth tremble before him.
The world stands firm and cannot be shaken.

31 Let the heavens be glad, and the earth rejoice!
Tell all the nations, “The Lord reigns!”
32 Let the sea and everything in it shout his praise!
Let the fields and their crops burst out with joy!
33 Let the trees of the forest sing for joy before the Lord,
for he is coming to judge the earth.

34 Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good!
His faithful love endures forever.
35 Cry out, “Save us, O God of our salvation!
Gather and rescue us from among the nations,
so we can thank your holy name
and rejoice and praise you.”

36 Praise the Lord, the God of Israel,
who lives from everlasting to everlasting!

And all the people shouted “Amen!” and praised the Lord.

Romans 1:18-32

God’s Anger at Sin

18 But God shows his anger from heaven against all sinful, wicked people who suppress the truth by their wickedness.[a] 19 They know the truth about God because he has made it obvious to them. 20 For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing God.

21 Yes, they knew God, but they wouldn’t worship him as God or even give him thanks. And they began to think up foolish ideas of what God was like. As a result, their minds became dark and confused. 22 Claiming to be wise, they instead became utter fools. 23 And instead of worshiping the glorious, ever-living God, they worshiped idols made to look like mere people and birds and animals and reptiles.

24 So God abandoned them to do whatever shameful things their hearts desired. As a result, they did vile and degrading things with each other’s bodies. 25 They traded the truth about God for a lie. So they worshiped and served the things God created instead of the Creator himself, who is worthy of eternal praise! Amen. 26 That is why God abandoned them to their shameful desires. Even the women turned against the natural way to have sex and instead indulged in sex with each other. 27 And the men, instead of having normal sexual relations with women, burned with lust for each other. Men did shameful things with other men, and as a result of this sin, they suffered within themselves the penalty they deserved.

28 Since they thought it foolish to acknowledge God, he abandoned them to their foolish thinking and let them do things that should never be done. 29 Their lives became full of every kind of wickedness, sin, greed, hate, envy, murder, quarreling, deception, malicious behavior, and gossip. 30 They are backstabbers, haters of God, insolent, proud, and boastful. They invent new ways of sinning, and they disobey their parents. 31 They refuse to understand, break their promises, are heartless, and have no mercy. 32 They know God’s justice requires that those who do these things deserve to die, yet they do them anyway. Worse yet, they encourage others to do them, too.

Psalm 10:1-15

Psalm 10

O Lord, why do you stand so far away?
Why do you hide when I am in trouble?
The wicked arrogantly hunt down the poor.
Let them be caught in the evil they plan for others.
For they brag about their evil desires;
they praise the greedy and curse the Lord.

The wicked are too proud to seek God.
They seem to think that God is dead.
Yet they succeed in everything they do.
They do not see your punishment awaiting them.
They sneer at all their enemies.
They think, “Nothing bad will ever happen to us!
We will be free of trouble forever!”

Their mouths are full of cursing, lies, and threats.[a]
Trouble and evil are on the tips of their tongues.
They lurk in ambush in the villages,
waiting to murder innocent people.
They are always searching for helpless victims.
Like lions crouched in hiding,
they wait to pounce on the helpless.
Like hunters they capture the helpless
and drag them away in nets.
10 Their helpless victims are crushed;
they fall beneath the strength of the wicked.
11 The wicked think, “God isn’t watching us!
He has closed his eyes and won’t even see what we do!”

12 Arise, O Lord!
Punish the wicked, O God!
Do not ignore the helpless!
13 Why do the wicked get away with despising God?
They think, “God will never call us to account.”
14 But you see the trouble and grief they cause.
You take note of it and punish them.
The helpless put their trust in you.
You defend the orphans.

15 Break the arms of these wicked, evil people!
Go after them until the last one is destroyed.

  1. 10:7 Greek version reads cursing and bitterness. Compare Rom 3:14.

Proverbs 19:6-7

Many seek favors from a ruler;
everyone is the friend of a person who gives gifts!

The relatives of the poor despise them;
how much more will their friends avoid them!
Though the poor plead with them,
their friends are gone.

1 Chronicles 12:19-14:17, Romans 1:1-17, Psalm 9:13-20, Proverbs 19:4-5

Today is the 12th day of July, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian. It is wonderful to be here with you today, as we gather around the Global campfire and take the next step forward, on our adventure through the Scriptures this year. Our next step will lead us in the Old Testament back into the book of first Chronicles. And then, when we get to the New Testament, we’ll be moving into some new territory, like I was saying yesterday, even a new genre of literature, as we begin the book or letter of Romans. And we’ll talk about that and kind of get a little bit of a lay of the land, when we get there. But first, first Chronicles chapter 12 verse 19, through 14 verse 17.

Introduction to the Book of Romans:

Okay so, as we’ve talked about already, we’re moving into some new territory as we move into our New Testament reading for today. We will be reading from the book of Romans, and this leads us to essentially a new genre in the New Testament letters. Romans was a letter. In fact, most of what we know about Paul, we get from the letters that he wrote that are incorporated into the New Testament, taking up a very, very generous portion of the New Testament. Now here is the interesting thing, the letters of Paul, which an awful lot of scholars believe first Thessalonians is the first letter of Paul, preserved anyway, all of these letters predate the Gospels and the book of Acts, that we’ve just read. And so, the letters of Paul are the earliest Christian documents that we have. And so, the book of Acts, that we’ve just concluded, which chronicles the apostle Peter’s ministry and…and even in more detail chronicles the apostle Paul’s ministry, we’ll remember Paul is traveling all over the Roman Empire on these missionary journeys, he was communicating during that time and writing letters. And we have those. The book of Acts compiled the story of his missionary journeys later. But the book of Acts, indeed, gave us the story of how this Pharisee Saul who hated people who believed in Jesus, completely turned around, became the apostle Paul, and eventually died for his belief in Jesus. And his letters come in between those two points which would make the book of Romans, or the letter to the Romans, such a document. And in terms of its value and influence, the book of Romans, most scholars would agree, this is the most comprehensive work of the Apostle Paul and it lays out much of our theological understanding of what Jesus came to do and succeeded in doing and offered us what we would call the Good News. So much of our understanding about how this works, comes from the letter to the Romans. It’s likely, that Romans came from the time that Paul was in Corinth, where a church had been established and so much work had been accomplished there. And this is probably written somewhere in the mid-50s A.D., and this is a lengthy letter will Paul finish writing the letter, he sent a Deaconess, her name was Phoebe from the church in Contrai, which we are told, and Contrai was just outside of Corinth. And she was sent with letter in hand to hand deliver the letter and make an introduction of who Paul is, because although Paul planted a lot of churches all of the places that he went, he did not plant the church in Rome. It’s not exactly certain who planted the church in Rome, there’s lots of speculation about everything around any of these topics, but the speculation is probably…probably somebody or maybe a group of people had witnessed or been involved in or had heard closely about the outpouring of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost in Jerusalem. Which from the book of Acts, we know why people were speaking in languages that the outsiders could hear, they were from all over the world, and they were hearing in their own native tongue worship to God. And so, this would have had an impact. In fact, it did have an impact were 3000 people believed in Jesus and so this begins to spread from there and makes its way to Rome. And one of the things we’ll continue to become clear to us is that, one of the main sticking points, one of the main reasons the gospel of Jesus, especially through the pen or lips of Paul and the apostles, was such a lightning rod that cause such strong outpouring of emotion and action, is because Paul believed that what Jesus had done invited the entire world to return to God and not just the chosen people, the Jewish people. That Gentiles were equally welcome at the table, as it were. And that distinction was a very, very difficult thing for the Jewish people to accept. It’s just that Paul wasn’t trying to create some kind of other religion the people needed to kind of deviate from the true religion. He was essentially saying that that’s not the point. The point is that God has made some choices and God has brought His people forward through the Jewish Messiah named Jesus, He fulfilled the law. But that was just the mountain too high for many to, to, to climb and cross and so riots and protests and stuff like this surround Paul because of this message. In Romans, Paul explains how he got there, like, how he arrived at what he was teaching, with the central question on people’s minds being how do you become righteous before God. So, Paul explained that Moses, the law of Moses, was good and perfect and given by God. But nobody could obey it perfectly and it would take obeying it perfectly to actually obey it perfectly to be made righteous before God. Nobody could do that but then Jesus did. And not only that, he also confirmed what the Pharisees believed that there is a resurrection from the dead and that’s a lynch pin for Paul, that Jesus rose from the dead, confirmed the direction he had been believing in all along, God raised someone from the dead. He raised Jesus from the dead, which makes Jesus an important figure. And so, Paul unpacks that for us in the book of Romans. And so, with that we begin a book, that’s, well, it’s the kind of book that you actually, really need to pay attention to because he says a lot in a short amount of time, it’s densely packed together. So, let’s begin, Romans chapter 1 verses one through 17.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word, we thank You for another day to gather together around the Scriptures and to fellowship with one another around the Global Campfire and we thank You for this new territory that we are entering into, as we begin to move through these letters of the apostle Paul. And Holy Spirit, come, speak to us clearly and deeply about our faith and what it represents. Lead us deeper and as we draw evermore new in intimacy with You, draw near to us, teach us, lead us into the truth. We pray, in the name of Jesus, we ask. Amen.

Prayer and Encouragements:

Hello DABers, this is Kate calling from Columbus, Ohio. I’m calling to pray or just to shout out. I think her name was One Can Be Saved. She was talking about all the many sins that she’s done. And when I heard, I just started saying it for her like, devil, you have no power over her anymore. She put everything out in the open so you can’t taunt her with it, you can’t make her think that she’s less than or she’s the only one doing it or nobody knows, it’s in the open. You have no victory over that anymore. So, I’m strengthening you. I’m saying bravo to you. Rest in the Lord for He is great and there is no greater place, than to be resting in the arms of Jesus. He heard your cries; He hears you now. He is restoring you and renewing your faith in Him. And He’s blessing you beyond compare. Stay at the foot of Jesus and watch to see the miracles, the signs and wonders He’s gonna do through you and in you because you want to be faithful. So you will be faithful. God bless her and cover everywhere she goes, that she would touch people’s lives, unknowingly and knowingly. That they come back and say thank you for being a witness, thank you for being so transparent. I needed help; you were there. God bless her. God bless everyone. Thank you, Brian and the Hardin family, you’re amazing.

Hi their DAB family. I’ve been listening to DAB for many years, and I just feel it’s time for me to express my gratitude to Brian. I appreciate so much and what he has to say every day, along with the Bible reading that I find so very helpful. And also, thank you to all of those that call in and pray and show so much love for each other and it just left me in tears today and I’m so grateful for this beautiful family of God, it’s a taste of heaven. And there’s been so many prayers answered, so much love, the love of God in this community. And I’m so grateful and just send you all my love and thanks to God for each of you and for Brian and Jill and this community. Bye for now.

Hi DAB, it’s Belle from Colorado. Could you please pray for me? I’ve been going through a lot of ups and downs. When something is out of my control, I run away from the problem, instead of facing it. When I realize my mistake, I sulk instead of facing it. I eventually deal with it but I’ve wasted a ton of time and energy and then I do it all again the next day. So, I would like your prayers to get out of this cycle. Thanks guys. And know that I am praying for all of you too. And thanks Brian for this really cool app.

Hi everyone, Daily Audio Bible. This is Julie from the UK, it’s been a good year since I last called in. And I thank everybody that prayed for me. I was so __ by anxiety. But I do listen every day and I pray for so many people on here. I’d just like to pray for Katie, who’s suffering with anxiety really, really bad and it’s really affecting her life. And I know exactly how that feels. And I pray for you often, Katie and I pray that you’ll get relief from this horrible, debilitating state. And also, there’s a gentleman who was asking for prayer for his daughter, who was also suffering from anxiety and depression. It’s so debilitating and really impacting the lives. I did get a little bit better for a while but not fully. And I’m really, really bad again at the moment. So, I ask people if they’ll pray for me again. To relieve me from this anxiety and depression and acrophobia. These tears that I cry every day. Some days are a little better. But some days are just so bad and I’m so down. And I just want to get well so I can reach out and open some kind of hope at the local church where people with mental health issues could pop in and get support and get people to collect them because I know how difficult it is to get out and about and be around people that will pray for you. So, I ask for your prayers everybody. Thank you.

Hey DAB family, it’s Leeza from the West Coast. I also realized I don’t think I ever put this on the Prayer Wall that I go by Philippians 4:6 because that verse has really helped me get through a lot of life. Anyway, I have been really struggling recently. I feel like, just all the trauma/triggers I’ve had, have been kind of resurfacing all at once, in all areas of my life, from my friendships to dating and to my job search and just a really unhealthy toxic work environment and I can really use your prayers. I feel like I’m just really struggling to remember that God loves me and through that also just that anyone could love me. I have really great amazing friends, but I feel like, I’ve just been pushing people away by feeling like I’m too much and that I’m not good enough. And I know that’s the enemy, really just making me feel insignificant as if I don’t believe that God is there or loves me. But it’s really hard when it’s day in and day out, the same things keep happening. So, I could just really use your prayers that God is with me and just shows me His love and forgiveness and just surrounds me with a sense of community. People that love me even when I don’t show up as my best self. And even when I’m really triggered, and I act in a way that’s not necessarily logical for others. I really appreciate your prayers and I pray for all of you every day. I’m really thankful for the DAB family, just the community that I found here. Thank you.
