Joshua 11-12

Joshua Defeats Jabin and His Allies

11 When the news of Israel's victories reached King Jabin of Hazor, he sent word to King Jobab of Madon, to the kings of Shimron and Achshaph, and to the kings in the hill country in the north, in the Jordan Valley south of Lake Galilee, in the foothills, and on the coast near Dor. He also sent word to the Canaanites on both sides of the Jordan, to the Amorites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, and the Jebusites in the hill country, as well as to the Hivites who lived at the foot of Mount Hermon in the land of Mizpah. They came with all their soldiers—an army with as many men as there are grains of sand on the seashore. They also had many horses and chariots. All of these kings joined forces and came together and set up camp at Merom Brook to fight against Israel.

The Lord said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid of them. By this time tomorrow I will have killed all of them for Israel. You are to cripple their horses and burn their chariots.” So Joshua and all his men attacked them by surprise at Merom Brook. The Lord gave the Israelites victory over them; the Israelites attacked and pursued them as far north as Misrephoth Maim and Sidon, and as far east as the valley of Mizpah. The fight continued until none of the enemy was left alive. Joshua did to them what the Lord had commanded: he crippled their horses and burned their chariots.

10 Joshua then turned back, captured Hazor and killed its king. (At that time Hazor was the most powerful of all those kingdoms.) 11 They put everyone there to death; no one was left alive, and the city was burned.

12 Joshua captured all these cities and their kings, putting everyone to death, just as Moses, the Lord's servant, had commanded. 13 However, the Israelites did not burn any of the cities built on mounds, except Hazor, which Joshua did burn. 14 The people of Israel took all the valuables and livestock from these cities and kept them for themselves. But they put every person to death; no one was left alive. 15 The Lord had given his commands to his servant Moses, Moses had given them to Joshua, and Joshua obeyed them. He did everything that the Lord had commanded Moses.

The Territory Taken by Joshua

16 Joshua captured all the land—the hill country and foothills, both north and south, all the area of Goshen and the dry country south of it, as well as the Jordan Valley. 17-18 The territory extended from Mount Halak in the south near Edom, as far as Baalgad in the north, in the valley of Lebanon south of Mount Hermon. Joshua was at war with the kings of this territory for a long time, but he captured them all and put them to death. 19 The only city that made peace with the people of Israel was Gibeon, where some of the Hivites lived. All the others were conquered in battle. 20 (A)The Lord had made them determined to fight the Israelites, so that they would be condemned to total destruction and all be killed without mercy. This was what the Lord had commanded Moses.

21 At this time Joshua went and destroyed the race of giants called the Anakim who lived in the hill country—in Hebron, Debir, Anab, and in all the hill country of Judah and Israel. Joshua completely destroyed them and their cities. 22 None of the Anakim were left in the land of Israel; a few, however, were left in Gaza, Gath, and Ashdod.

23 Joshua captured the whole land, as the Lord had commanded Moses. Joshua gave it to the Israelites as their own and divided it into portions, one for each tribe.

So the people rested from war.

The Kings Defeated by Moses

12 (B)The people of Israel had already conquered and occupied the land east of the Jordan, from the Arnon Valley up the Jordan Valley and as far north as Mount Hermon. They defeated two kings. One was Sihon, the Amorite king who ruled at Heshbon. His kingdom included half of Gilead: from Aroer (on the edge of the Arnon Valley) and from the city in[a] the middle of that valley, as far as the Jabbok River, the border of Ammon; it included the Jordan Valley from Lake Galilee south to Beth Jeshimoth (east of the Dead Sea) and on toward the foot of Mount Pisgah.

They also defeated King Og of Bashan, who was one of the last of the Rephaim; he ruled at Ashtaroth and Edrei. His kingdom included Mount Hermon, Salecah, and all of Bashan as far as the boundaries of Geshur and Maacah, as well as half of Gilead, as far as the territory of King Sihon of Heshbon.

(C)These two kings were defeated by Moses and the people of Israel. Moses, the Lord's servant, gave their land to the tribes of Reuben and Gad and to half the tribe of Manasseh, to be their possession.

The Kings Defeated by Joshua

Joshua and the people of Israel defeated all the kings in the territory west of the Jordan, from Baalgad in the valley of Lebanon to Mount Halak in the south near Edom. Joshua divided this land among the tribes and gave it to them as a permanent possession. This portion included the hill country, the western foothills, the Jordan Valley and its foothills, the eastern slopes, and the dry country in the south. This land had been the home of the Hittites, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites. The people of Israel defeated the kings of the following cities: Jericho, Ai (near Bethel), 10 Jerusalem, Hebron, 11 Jarmuth, Lachish, 12 Eglon, Gezer, 13 Debir, Geder, 14 Hormah, Arad, 15 Libnah, Adullam, 16 Makkedah, Bethel, 17 Tappuah, Hepher, 18 Aphek, Lasharon, 19 Madon, Hazor, 20 Shimron Meron, Achshaph, 21 Taanach, Megiddo, 22 Kedesh, Jokneam (in Carmel), 23 Dor (on the coast), Goiim (in Galilee[b]), 24 and Tirzah—thirty-one kings in all.

Luke 17:11-37

Jesus Heals Ten Men

11 As Jesus made his way to Jerusalem, he went along the border between Samaria and Galilee. 12 He was going into a village when he was met by ten men suffering from a dreaded skin disease. They stood at a distance 13 and shouted, “Jesus! Master! Have pity on us!”

14 (A)Jesus saw them and said to them, “Go and let the priests examine you.”

On the way they were made clean.[a] 15 When one of them saw that he was healed, he came back, praising God in a loud voice. 16 He threw himself to the ground at Jesus' feet and thanked him. The man was a Samaritan. 17 Jesus spoke up, “There were ten who were healed; where are the other nine? 18 Why is this foreigner the only one who came back to give thanks to God?” 19 And Jesus said to him, “Get up and go; your faith has made you well.”

The Coming of the Kingdom(B)

20 Some Pharisees asked Jesus when the Kingdom of God would come. His answer was, “The Kingdom of God does not come in such a way as to be seen. 21 No one will say, ‘Look, here it is!’ or, ‘There it is!’; because the Kingdom of God is within you.”[b]

22 Then he said to the disciples, “The time will come when you will wish you could see one of the days of the Son of Man, but you will not see it. 23 There will be those who will say to you, ‘Look, over there!’ or, ‘Look, over here!’ But don't go out looking for it. 24 As the lightning flashes across the sky and lights it up from one side to the other, so will the Son of Man be in his day. 25 But first he must suffer much and be rejected by the people of this day. 26 (C)As it was in the time of Noah so shall it be in the days of the Son of Man. 27 (D)Everybody kept on eating and drinking, and men and women married, up to the very day Noah went into the boat and the flood came and killed them all. 28 (E)It will be as it was in the time of Lot. Everybody kept on eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building. 29 On the day Lot left Sodom, fire and sulfur rained down from heaven and killed them all. 30 That is how it will be on the day the Son of Man is revealed.

31 (F)“On that day someone who is on the roof of a house must not go down into the house to get any belongings; in the same way anyone who is out in the field must not go back to the house. 32 (G)Remember Lot's wife! 33 (H)Those who try to save their own life will lose it; those who lose their life will save it. 34 On that night, I tell you, there will be two people sleeping in the same bed: one will be taken away, the other will be left behind. 35 Two women will be grinding meal together: one will be taken away, the other will be left behind.” 36 [c]

37 The disciples asked him, “Where, Lord?”

Jesus answered, “Wherever there is a dead body, the vultures will gather.”

Psalm 84

Longing for God's House[a]

84 How I love your Temple, Lord Almighty!
How I want to be there!
I long to be in the Lord's Temple.
With my whole being I sing for joy
to the living God.
Even the sparrows have built a nest,
and the swallows have their own home;
they keep their young near your altars,
Lord Almighty, my king and my God.
How happy are those who live in your Temple,
always singing praise to you.

How happy are those whose strength comes from you,
who are eager to make the pilgrimage to Mount Zion.
As they pass through the dry valley of Baca,
it becomes a place of springs;
the autumn rain fills it with pools.
They grow stronger as they go;
they will see the God of gods on Zion.

Hear my prayer, Lord God Almighty.
Listen, O God of Jacob!
Bless our king, O God,
the king you have chosen.

10 One day spent in your Temple
is better than a thousand anywhere else;
I would rather stand at the gate of the house of my God
than live in the homes of the wicked.
11 The Lord is our protector and glorious king,
blessing us with kindness and honor.
He does not refuse any good thing
to those who do what is right.
12 Lord Almighty, how happy are those who trust in you!

Joshua 9:3-10:43, Luke 16:19-17:10, Psalms 83:1-18, Proverbs 13:4

Today is the 14th day of April welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I’m Brian it’s wonderful to be here with you today as we gather around the Global Campfire and move forward together, which will lead us back into the book of Joshua. And now that the children of Israel are in the promised land they are definitely wreaking havoc on the way people think and we have a number of kings coming together to ally themselves against Israel. And that’s where we pick up the story. Joshua chapter 9 verse 3 through 10 verse 43.

Commentary:

Okay. So, in the book of Joshua today a large swath of the promised land is now under Israelite control and that happened because of a deception that in the end turned in the Israelites favor. It was the people of Gibeon who had traveled three days but had made it look like they had trouble months to make a treaty with the Israelites who did in fact make a treaty with them without consulting the Lord as the Scriptures say. And, so, a few days later, the Israelites figure out what’s going on and they confront them and now they’ve made a treaty that makes it impossible for them to obey what the Lord had told them to do in terms of conquering all of the cities and all of the people. And it’s not long before this treaty is known by the other kings of the lands. And, so, some very strong kings in the territory ally themselves to attack Gibeon because Gibeon was a formidable opponent for any of them. So, for them to make a treaty with Israel, this is not a good move. This is not a good political move. This is going to be destabilizing. And, so, they attack Gibeon and Gibeon then reaches out to the people there in treaty with saying come and save us we’re…we’re being destroyed here by the other kings, which is what sets it all up. The Israelite army then goes to defend the Gibeonites. They march all the way there and attack immediately defeating all of the kings that were allied against Gibeon. So, Gibeon’s deception ultimately brought all of these armies together and Israel was able to confront them and then chase them back toward their cities that were subsequently conquered. And, so, that’s what we’ve got going on in the promised land.

Then when we turn into the gospel of Luke we have Jesus doing several different small teachings, but there is one that’s at the very very end of our reading today, very short paragraph that gives a posture…oh…a posture for our hearts that if we understood this posture would then offer us the opportunity to be grateful in every circumstance, rather than being entitled in every circumstance and self-absorbed in every circumstance. And, so, I quote our Lord. “Suppose one of you has a servant to his plowing or looking after the sheep. When he comes in from the field, do you tell them to hurry along and eat his meal? Of course not. Instead, you say to them, get my supper ready and put on your apron and wait on me while I eat and drink. After that you may have your meal. The servant does not deserve thanks for obeying orders, does he? It is the same with you. When you have done all you have been told to do say, ‘we are ordinary servants. We have only done our duty.’” This is a very different posture then sort of the quid pro quo that we often have in our spirituality. Like, if I be a good boy or girl, then God has to, in turn, then pay me back for my goodness. The thing that the Bible is teaching us repeatedly over and over Old and New Testament, is that we have no claim to our own goodness. Everything that we have has come from God. In and of ourselves there is nothing good. God doesn’t need to pay us back for anything. And when we are serving God from this place of understanding that we don’t even deserve to be a servant like the story of the prodigal son. We don’t even deserve to be called that anymore. We just wonder if there might be a place for us to labor, someplace for us to being here. This posture keeps us squarely in reality. We don’t deserve anything. And obedience to God doesn’t really earn us anything. We are ordinary servants. We have only done our duty. God’s blessing comes from His love and His fathering not because we’ve backed Him into a corner and been so good that He’s gotta dole out goodies because we’ve earned them, we deserve them. He must do this. God operates out of love, whether we deserve it or not. We, on the other hand, are fortunate to even have a place in God’s family at all. We are ordinary servants. We have only done our duty.

Prayer:

Father, we invite Your Holy Spirit to bring this into our hearts, changing things around from our mentality of expectation and then maybe disappointment that we don’t get what we want every time that we want it. Help us to remember the words of our Savior, “we are ordinary servants, we have only done our duty.” And then with a grateful heart we receive all the blessings that You have given us. Come Holy Spirit set us aright. Help us to see clearly, we pray. In the precious name of Jesus, we ask. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hello, my amazing Daily Audio Bible community. Hey, let’s throw another log on the Global Campfire. It’s Daniel Johnson junior here from beautiful Cincinnati OH and I haven’t chimed in in a little while, but I just wanted to say thank you to all of you prayer warriors. You know that maybe you’re not able to do a whole lot, you know, while you’re there in your life but boy can you pray. And it means the world to us that you do pray. And, so, thank you very so very much. Also, wanna give a big shout out to those of you who leave prayers in the prayer wall. It’s been encouraging for me to go over to the prayer wall sometimes and just offer to see what somebody is written and then pray for them. So, I’m so grateful that we have this community, this global campfire. I encourage you to support this ministry as much as you can even in any way that you can. First of all, pray for this community but also, you know, if you could support this financially. There was a time when I wasn’t doing it as regularly. And, so, now, you know, I’m making it a point to…near the beginning of every month, you know, as soon as I can to…to give some back to this community. But God bless you all. Here from beautiful Cincinnati OH it’s Daniel Johnson junior. I love you. That’s right I’m talking specifically to you right now. And make it a great day.

Hi DAB family this is Gigi from G-Ville. I just wanted to call and thank Soaring on Eagles Wings for that prayer for the blessing for me and Seth and baby Elise. We really…we listened to it all and we really appreciate yours and everyone’s prayers for us and for this new journey that we’re on. And she’s doing great. I am really grateful. I’m taking a little break off of nursing school. I’ll be back in the fall and I’m about halfway through. And yeah, it’s been really special time right now. Thank you all for…for keeping us in your prayers. We love you. Bye.

Hey family it’s Sparky. I try not to very often because I know there’s people with a lot bigger problems than mine, but I was going to see if you guys might be able to lift me up in some prayer. I’ve had a pretty good bought of depression for the past couple weeks and been real stressed at work and layoffs are coming and guys are stressed, and it’s just been…I think I’m missing my boys, my kids. They’re at the age…they…they want to hang out with friends and they’re just…I know it’ll pass and I just kind of feel as if I’m walking in the wilderness right now and God promises, you know, He will give you water when you’re thirsty but sometimes we can…we can not be looking at that big picture. And I just figured I’d come on and ask my family if they could pray over it and maybe help me lift this. I know it will pass and I just thank God for every one of your prayers. I keep praying for you all fervently. I love you guys.

Good morning Daily Audio Bible my name is Geneva I’m from Orlando FL I go by the name of Thirsty for His Grace. I am a quadruple listener. I’ve been listening for 2 ½ years. Thank you, Brian thank, you Jill thank you Ezekiel thank you China thank you everyone who’s responsible for putting this podcast together. Family I listened today’s reading April 13th, 2022 and just blessed by it but in my own daily meditation as we journey with Jesus to the cross I wanted to read this over our community. Jesus as we join You today on Your journey to the cross prepare each of our hearts to participate with You in the dark shadows of Good Friday in the bright dawn on Easter Sunday. Dear Lord Jesus, these are dark days. There’s so much brokenness all around. I think of those people I know whose health is broken whose relationships are broken whose faith in You is broken. Over these next few days as we approach each Easter may the message of Your brokenness somehow bring all of us a little wholeness and hope. May Your blood bring us the unexpected gift of new life. In the darkness of despair may the first rays of resurrection soon dawn. Love You Lord Jesus. Thank You that Your love endures forever. 2000 years after the Last Supper I eat the broken body and You make me whole. I drink Your blood and find forgiveness. Your loving doors forever. Help us not to distance ourselves today from the brokenness of the world. Break us and pour us out. Your love endures forever. We offer ourselves once again as living sacrifice to You the lamb who sacrificed Yourself, not just for me but for every single person I will meet today. Your love endures forever. Amen. Thank you love you family.

Hello, all my wonderful DABber brothers and sisters in Christ this is Sherry Mason from Kansas City MO. I have a prayer request. I had a delivery from a young woman named Baily and she was telling me how her back hurt because of the weather and I just spontaneously said can I pray for you and she just said yeah. So, I put my hand on her pray for healing, prayed for God’s spirit to come on her and when I was done…and I felt like I had to keep it short…she said to me no one has ever ask to pray for me before and I am really touched by that. So, I told her that God loved her and that all she had to do was call upon His name and she left. So, I am asking you all to pray for Bailey. I don’t think she’s saved. Pray for the spirit of God to come. Pray to her for her to have encounters with the Lord whether it’s through other people or simply by His spirit. But would you pray for her? I would so love to see somebody’s life changed. You know it’s a hard life sometimes and I don’t know how I would get through it without God. I can’t imagine the people in the world who don’t have Him in their life how they get through. So, thank you. Pray for Bailey. I love you all. God’s blessings to you in Jesus’ name. Amen. Bye.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Thursday April 14, 2022 (NIV)

Joshua 9:3-10:43

But the people of Gibeon, who were Hivites, heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and Ai, and they decided to deceive him. They went and got some food and loaded their donkeys with worn-out sacks and patched-up wineskins. They put on ragged clothes and worn-out sandals that had been mended. The bread they took with them was dry and moldy. Then they went to the camp at Gilgal and said to Joshua and the Israelites, “We have come from a distant land. We want you to make a treaty with us.”

(A)But the Israelites said, “Why should we make a treaty with you? Maybe you live nearby.”

They said to Joshua, “We are at your service.”

Joshua asked them, “Who are you? Where do you come from?”

Then they told him this story: “We have come from a very distant land, sir, because we have heard of the Lord your God. We have heard about everything that he did in Egypt 10 (B)and what he did to the two Amorite kings east of the Jordan: King Sihon of Heshbon and King Og of Bashan, who lived in Ashtaroth. 11 Our leaders and all the people that live in our land told us to get some food ready for a trip and to go and meet you. We were told to put ourselves at your service and ask you to make a treaty with us. 12 Look at our bread. When we left home with it and started out to meet you, it was still warm. But look! Now it is dry and moldy. 13 When we filled these wineskins, they were new, but look! They are torn. Our clothes and sandals are worn out from the long trip.”

14 The Israelites accepted some food from them, but did not consult the Lord about it. 15 Joshua made a treaty of friendship with the people of Gibeon and allowed them to live. The leaders of the community of Israel gave their solemn promise to keep the treaty.

16 Three days after the treaty had been made, the Israelites learned that these people did indeed live nearby. 17 So the people of Israel started out and three days later arrived at the cities where these people lived: Gibeon, Chephirah, Beeroth, and Kiriath Jearim. 18 But the Israelites could not kill them, because their leaders had made a solemn promise to them in the name of the Lord, Israel's God. All the people complained to the leaders about this, 19 but they answered, “We have made our solemn promise to them in the name of the Lord God of Israel. Now we cannot harm them. 20 We must let them live because of our promise; if we don't, God will punish us. 21 Let them live, but they will have to cut wood and carry water for us.” This was what the leaders suggested.

22 Joshua ordered the people of Gibeon to be brought to him, and he asked them, “Why did you deceive us and tell us that you were from far away, when you live right here? 23 Because you did this, God has condemned you. Your people will always be slaves, cutting wood and carrying water for the sanctuary of my God.”

24 They answered, “We did it, sir, because we learned that it was really true that the Lord your God had commanded his servant Moses to give you the whole land and to kill the people living in it as you advanced. We did it because we were terrified of you; we were in fear of our lives. 25 Now we are in your power; do with us what you think is right.” 26 So this is what Joshua did: he protected them and did not allow the people of Israel to kill them. 27 But at the same time he made them slaves, to cut wood and carry water for the people of Israel and for the Lord's altar. To this day they have continued to do this work in the place where the Lord has chosen to be worshiped.

The Amorites Are Defeated

10 Adonizedek, the king of Jerusalem,[a] heard that Joshua had captured and totally destroyed Ai and had killed its king, just as he had done to Jericho and its king. He also heard that the people of Gibeon had made peace with the Israelites and were living among them. The people of Jerusalem were greatly alarmed at this because Gibeon was as large as any of the cities that had a king; it was larger than Ai, and its men were good fighters. So Adonizedek sent the following message to King Hoham of Hebron, King Piram of Jarmuth, King Japhia of Lachish, and to King Debir of Eglon: “Come and help me attack Gibeon, because its people have made peace with Joshua and the Israelites.” These five Amorite kings, the kings of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish, and Eglon, joined forces, surrounded Gibeon, and attacked it.

The men of Gibeon sent word to Joshua at the camp in Gilgal: “Do not abandon us, sir! Come at once and help us! Save us! All the Amorite kings in the hill country have joined forces and have attacked us!”

So Joshua and his whole army, including the best troops, started out from Gilgal. The Lord said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid of them. I have already given you the victory. Not one of them will be able to stand against you.” All night Joshua and his army marched from Gilgal to Gibeon, and they made a surprise attack on the Amorites. 10 The Lord made the Amorites panic at the sight of Israel's army. The Israelites slaughtered them at Gibeon and pursued them down the mountain pass at Beth Horon, keeping up the attack as far south as Azekah and Makkedah. 11 While the Amorites were running down the pass from the Israelite army, the Lord made large hailstones fall down on them all the way to Azekah. More were killed by the hailstones than by the Israelites.

12 On the day that the Lord gave the men of Israel victory over the Amorites, Joshua spoke to the Lord. In the presence of the Israelites he said,

“Sun, stand still over Gibeon;
Moon, stop over Aijalon Valley.”

13 (C)The sun stood still and the moon did not move until the nation had conquered its enemies. This is written in the Book of Jashar. The sun stood still in the middle of the sky and did not go down for a whole day.

14 Never before, and never since, has there been a day like it, when the Lord obeyed a human being. The Lord fought on Israel's side!

15 After this, Joshua and his army went back to the camp at Gilgal.

Joshua Captures the Five Amorite Kings

16 The five Amorite kings, however, had escaped and were hiding in the cave at Makkedah. 17 Someone found them, and Joshua was told where they were hiding. 18 He said, “Roll some big stones in front of the entrance to the cave. Place some guards there, 19 but don't stay there yourselves. Keep on after the enemy and attack them from the rear; don't let them get to their cities! The Lord your God has given you victory over them.” 20 Joshua and the men of Israel slaughtered them, although some managed to find safety inside their city walls and were not killed. 21 Then all of Joshua's men came back safe to him at the camp at Makkedah.

No one in the land dared even to speak against the Israelites.

22 Then Joshua said, “Open the entrance to the cave and bring those five kings out to me.” 23 So the cave was opened, and the kings of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish, and Eglon were brought out 24 and taken to Joshua. Joshua then called all the men of Israel to him and ordered the officers who had gone with him to come and put their feet on the necks of the kings. They did so. 25 Then Joshua said to his officers, “Don't be afraid or discouraged. Be determined and confident because this is what the Lord is going to do to all your enemies.” 26 Then Joshua killed the kings and hanged them on five trees, where their bodies stayed until evening. 27 At sundown Joshua gave orders, and their bodies were taken down and thrown into the same cave where they had hidden earlier. Large stones were placed at the entrance to the cave, and they are still there.

Joshua Captures More Amorite Territory

28 Joshua attacked and captured Makkedah and its king that day. He put everyone in the city to death; no one was left alive. He did to the king of Makkedah what he had done to the king of Jericho.

29 After this, Joshua and his army went on from Makkedah to Libnah and attacked it. 30 The Lord also gave the Israelites victory over this city and its king. They spared no one, but killed every person in it. They did to the king what they had done to the king of Jericho.

31 After this, Joshua and his army went on from Libnah to Lachish, surrounded it and attacked it. 32 The Lord gave the Israelites victory over Lachish on the second day of the battle. Just as they had done at Libnah, they spared no one, but killed every person in the city. 33 King Horam of Gezer came to the aid of Lachish, but Joshua defeated him and his army and left none of them alive.

34 Next, Joshua and his army went on from Lachish to Eglon, surrounded it and attacked it. 35 They captured it the same day and put everyone there to death, just as they had done at Lachish.

36 After this, Joshua and his army went from Eglon up into the hills to Hebron, attacked it 37 and captured it. They killed the king and everyone else in the city as well as in the nearby towns. Joshua condemned the city to total destruction, just as he had done to Eglon. No one in it was left alive.

38 Then Joshua and his army turned back to Debir and attacked it. 39 He captured it, with its king and all the nearby towns. They put everyone there to death. Joshua did to Debir and its king what he had done to Hebron and to Libnah and its king.

40 Joshua conquered the whole land. He defeated the kings of the hill country, the eastern slopes, and the western foothills, as well as those of the dry country in the south. He spared no one; everyone was put to death. This was what the Lord God of Israel had commanded. 41 Joshua's campaign took him from Kadesh Barnea in the south to Gaza near the coast, including all the area of Goshen, and as far north as Gibeon. 42 Joshua conquered all these kings and their territory in one campaign because the Lord, Israel's God, was fighting for Israel. 43 After this, Joshua and his army went back to the camp at Gilgal.

Luke 16:19-17:10

The Rich Man and Lazarus

19 “There was once a rich man who dressed in the most expensive clothes and lived in great luxury every day. 20 There was also a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, who used to be brought to the rich man's door, 21 hoping to eat the bits of food that fell from the rich man's table. Even the dogs would come and lick his sores. 22 The poor man died and was carried by the angels to sit beside Abraham at the feast in heaven. The rich man died and was buried, 23 (A)and in Hades,[a] where he was in great pain, he looked up and saw Abraham, far away, with Lazarus at his side. 24 So he called out, ‘Father Abraham! Take pity on me, and send Lazarus to dip his finger in some water and cool off my tongue, because I am in great pain in this fire!’ 25 But Abraham said, ‘Remember, my son, that in your lifetime you were given all the good things, while Lazarus got all the bad things. But now he is enjoying himself here, while you are in pain. 26 Besides all that, there is a deep pit lying between us, so that those who want to cross over from here to you cannot do so, nor can anyone cross over to us from where you are.’ 27 The rich man said, ‘Then I beg you, father Abraham, send Lazarus to my father's house, 28 where I have five brothers. Let him go and warn them so that they, at least, will not come to this place of pain.’ 29 Abraham said, ‘Your brothers have Moses and the prophets to warn them; your brothers should listen to what they say.’ 30 The rich man answered, ‘That is not enough, father Abraham! But if someone were to rise from death and go to them, then they would turn from their sins.’ 31 But Abraham said, ‘If they will not listen to Moses and the prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone were to rise from death.’”

Sin(B)

17 Jesus said to his disciples, “Things that make people fall into sin are bound to happen, but how terrible for the one who makes them happen! It would be better for him if a large millstone were tied around his neck and he were thrown into the sea than for him to cause one of these little ones to sin. (C)So watch what you do!

“If your brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him. If he sins against you seven times in one day, and each time he comes to you saying, ‘I repent,’ you must forgive him.”

Faith

The apostles said to the Lord, “Make our faith greater.”

The Lord answered, “If you had faith as big as a mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, ‘Pull yourself up by the roots and plant yourself in the sea!’ and it would obey you.

A Servant's Duty

“Suppose one of you has a servant who is plowing or looking after the sheep. When he comes in from the field, do you tell him to hurry along and eat his meal? Of course not! Instead, you say to him, ‘Get my supper ready, then put on your apron and wait on me while I eat and drink; after that you may have your meal.’ The servant does not deserve thanks for obeying orders, does he? 10 It is the same with you; when you have done all you have been told to do, say, ‘We are ordinary servants; we have only done our duty.’”

Psalm 83

A Prayer for the Defeat of Israel's Enemies[a]

83 O God, do not keep silent;
do not be still, do not be quiet!
Look! Your enemies are in revolt,
and those who hate you are rebelling.
They are making secret plans against your people;
they are plotting against those you protect.
“Come,” they say, “let us destroy their nation,
so that Israel will be forgotten forever.”

They agree on their plan
and form an alliance against you:
the people of Edom and the Ishmaelites;
the people of Moab and the Hagrites;
the people of Gebal, Ammon, and Amalek,
and of Philistia and Tyre.
Assyria has also joined them
as a strong ally of the Ammonites and Moabites, the descendants of Lot.

(A)Do to them what you did to the Midianites,
and to Sisera and Jabin at the Kishon River.
10 You defeated them at Endor,
and their bodies rotted on the ground.
11 (B)Do to their leaders what you did to Oreb and Zeeb;
defeat all their rulers as you did Zebah and Zalmunna,
12 who said, “We will take for our own
the land that belongs to God.”

13 Scatter them like dust, O God,
like straw blown away by the wind.
14 As fire burns the forest,
as flames set the hills on fire,
15 chase them away with your storm
and terrify them with your fierce winds.
16 Cover their faces with shame, O Lord,
and make them acknowledge your power.
17 May they be defeated and terrified forever;
may they die in complete disgrace.
18 May they know that you alone are the Lord,
supreme ruler over all the earth.

Joshua 7:16-9:2, Luke 16:1-18, Psalm 82:1-8, Proverbs 13:2-3

Today is the 13th day of April, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian, it is great to be here with you today, as we take the next step forward together, which will lead us back into a book that we’re getting into, the Book of Joshua. Well, we have finally found ourselves in the Promised Land. The children of Israel have made their first conquest of a city, that being the city of Jericho, the walls fell down. Then they went to scout a nearby village called Ai, they decided not send the whole army because it’s just small place and they are defeated. They attacked the city of Ai, and they are defeated and it is because someone rebelled against God, in the matter of Jericho. And they’re trying to sort it all out and that’s where we pick up the story. Joshua chapter 7 verse 16 through 9 verse 2.

Commentary:

Okay so, in the book of Joshua we finally now know what’s going on and why the children of Israel were defeated in their second battle. Right, they had marched around the walls of Jericho, the walls came tumbling down, they ran inside, Jericho was destroyed, they had been given specific instructions about what was to happen and there was no plunder to be taken. Everybody knew what was going on, but Achan, Achan he saw some stuff he wanted and he took it and when the Army went to go against the city of Ai and were defeated 36 people were killed and they were defeated, the children of Israel were defeated and ran away, which sent them consulting with God, which eventually revealed that Achan had taken some plunder, against his oath, against his covenant, against his promise, against everyone’s promise and against God’s specific explicit instructions. And this is where idolatry begins. Right, it begins with disobedience, dishonesty, deception and trusting in that which is not God or from or of God. And it did not work out well for Achan. And through this story, we are once again reminded that it will not work out well for us or anyone else.

Oddly enough, when we turn over to the New Testament into the Gospel of Luke, Jesus pretty well explains this for us and I quote “whoever is faithful in small matters, will be faithful in larger ones, whoever is dishonest in small matters, will be dishonest in larger ones. If then, you have not been faithful in handling worldly wealth, how can you be trusted with true wealth. If you have not been faithful with what belongs to someone else, who will give you what belongs to you. No servant can be the slave of two masters, such a slave will hate one and love the other or will be loyal to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.” And so, what we see unfolding here is that God has given instructions, has also given vision for an outcome of those instructions, they’re clear instructions, they’re not nuanced. But then, like people, we look for the shortcuts, we look for the nuances, we look for what we can get away with, we look for how far we can press the matter. And in the story of Achan and the children of Israel and the battle of Ai, as well as Jesus statements to the Pharisees, we see that there is, indeed, a limit. And it appears to be that the limit is anything that will cause us to be drawn away from God. Anything that will turn our hearts, even a little bit, because over time it will become a lot and actually the children of Israel will teach us this lesson over and over again because what we’ve seen begin with Achan, is a pattern that we will see recur over the generations and once again we’ll…we’ll see where the road goes, and it never goes anywhere good. Whatever we put our trust in, is something that gains our devotion and allegiance and loyalty, if that is not God, we are not on the right path. If we’re not on the right path, we’re not going where we want to go. If we’re not going where we want to go we’re not going to end up where we wanted to be and no shortcut is going to get us there. Jesus said that there is a narrow path that leads to life, but will you ever find it. One of the first steps in finding it, has to be removing anything that would draw us away from it. And this is one of the great themes in the Bible. It’s one of the things that recur over and over again, across the generations. Because we’re still learning those lessons, even in our own personal lives, even in our extraordinarily modern times. And so, we’re left to consider where is my allegiance, where is my loyalty? if I know the answer to those things, I know where my trust is. If the answer to that isn’t God, then we have a problem.

Prayer:

So, Father, we invite You into that, it is not hard. It is our desire to walk with You day-by-day, step-by-step, every moment, of every day in Your presence, doing Your work in this world. And we are distracted by every possible thing that can pull us away from that and we recognize that and we know that and we need You. We need You today, more than we needed You yesterday. We need You more than ever. And so, Holy Spirit, come. Help us to have that margin where we can see these things before, they become strongholds in our lives so that, we can see that the choices that we’re making, are choices to chain ourselves to things that are going to take a long time to get unchained from. Help us to see what You are seeing. We pray in the name of Jesus, we ask. Amen.

Prayers and Encouragement:

Hey everyone, I’m Christie from Kentucky. I wanted to call and just talk to a couple of my sisters in Christ. I want to thank you both. I sit here this morning with tears in my eyes. Daddy’s Girl in Kansas, you called in and talked about a sister who had lost her mom. She had called in on the community prayer on April the 2nd, I don’t know the ladies name. But Daddy’s Girl I want you to know that thank you for calling in because sometimes when we call in for other people we’re also calling in for someone we don’t even know has walked through that and that was the exact scenario when I lost my mom in 2017 when I begged her. She was in a coma. I begged her please don’t leave, please don’t leave me mom. And then a tear came from her eye, just a single tear. And it, my heart broke. And then I said, it’s okay, it’s okay, mom it’s okay you can go to Jesus. I’ll be okay, I’ll be okay. I’ll take care of the family. You were speaking to me too. Thank you. And LGB, I just wanted you to know that, thank you for your call, it was so precious. The last thing to do is I was singing Amazing Grace over my momma. I love you guys so very much. God is so very good and He works through us when we don’t even know that He’s working through us. I love this family, I love you guys so very much. I pray you have a blessed day today.

Dear Eyes of a Dove, I just heard your call on April the 11th and I just want you to know I am so sorry. I know this feeling of exhaustion, the fear and not knowing what will happen next. Two years ago, I experienced something similar. God gave me the wisdom and strength to let go of my fiancé in the pain, I loved him enough to let him go and place him into the Lord’s hands. To let God, do what He’s famous for. God will bless your obedience. I heard you say he took a job as a trucker and you don’t know how that will help. But like Brian said about Joshua and the walls of Jericho, God works in the most unexpected ways. I will be praying for you sister, you’re not alone and we will be holding your arms up like Aaron and Her did for Moses, we will be holding you up. I love you, love your sister Ashlee in California.

Hello DAB family, this is Atesia calling. I just called prior with the news that I lost my father. He passed away at 92 a couple weeks ago, March 22. His wife, my mother, passed away this Monday, April 4th. I’m calling because I want to get out to respect her as well. I’m so grateful that I am able to share with you, the sadness of these occurrences. I don’t share with family. But thank you for allowing me to share my mourning with you and I know you’re praying and I pray for you. I am grateful. Thank you Brian and Jill. So, my mother left her husband, her man, her entire hero and so, now they rest together. And I feel blessed for it, but I am very sad. I loved them very much. Thank you for allowing me to share, God bless my friends.

Hello Daily Audio Bible family, this is Robbie from Canada. I would like to repent. I am perhaps the most double minded Christian that’s ever walked this planet. I often feel like I’m the worst Christian on the planet, but I just want to repent right now because I feel God’s spirit in me and I just, I have to be all in, like Brian was saying today, April 11th Jesus asked us all or nothing and oh wow, I just, that’s the key. And so, I just wanted to just thank you for that Brian, thank you for your ministry and yeah, it’s like you slay me. I trust you, like Job said, it’s so important to have that level of faith. Our bodies are a living sacrifices for God. So, I just wanted to repent and ask for prayer to give me faith and to walk out my whole life in faith and to acknowledge Him in all my ways. I have not been doing that. So far, my life has not been a good testimony for the Lord. So, I want that to change, okay. God bless you all. Thank you.

Good morning family, this is Erin in Michigan and it is what, April 12th today. But I just finished listening to April 9th, so I’m a little behind but I keep on, keeping on. So, Brian, thank you, Jill, China, Ben, Ezekiel, thank you so much for this wonderful podcast. And thank you for answering God’s call. So, I was listening to the April 9th podcast and it was about healing the daughter of Abraham and 18 years being bent over and you know, just being. And right now, friends, I am, you know, a year out from my really big break up and trying to heal from that and trying to look at my behavior and within that I see addiction and within that I see the way that I have learned to deal with things and where I found my worth in the past and where I continue, sometimes, to look for my worth instead of to Jesus, to look for my identity and worth in Jesus. And it just really struck me today that, you know, for over 18 years now I have been bent over with this addiction and couldn’t straighten up and couldn’t stand tall and couldn’t stand worthy in the face of God’s love. And now, I understand Sabbath are no, He asked me to, He asked me to stand up and asked me to be whole and I just praise You. So, today’s, you know, the ninth, that’s not today’s message but the message from April 9th really just blessed my soul. Thank you, Brian, thank you for your obedience to God. And friends, if you look in the mirror and or if you’re shown a picture of you by people that is not, that is not whole and that is not who Jesus sees us. Let us deny that. Alright, thanks friends, have a great day.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Wednesday April 13, 2022 (NIV)

Joshua 7:16-9:2

16 Early the next morning Joshua brought Israel forward, tribe by tribe, and the tribe of Judah was picked out. 17 He brought the tribe of Judah forward, clan by clan, and the clan of Zerah was picked out. Then he brought the clan of Zerah forward, family by family, and the family of Zabdi was picked out. 18 He then brought Zabdi's family forward, one by one, and Achan, the son of Carmi and grandson of Zabdi, was picked out. 19 Joshua said to him, “My son, tell the truth here before the Lord, the God of Israel, and confess. Tell me now what you have done. Don't try to hide it from me.”

20 “It's true,” Achan answered. “I have sinned against the Lord, Israel's God, and this is what I did. 21 Among the things we seized I saw a beautiful Babylonian cloak, about five pounds of silver, and a bar of gold weighing over one pound. I wanted them so much that I took them. You will find them buried inside my tent, with the silver at the bottom.”

22 So Joshua sent some men, who ran to the tent and found that the condemned things really were buried there, with the silver at the bottom. 23 They brought them out of the tent, took them to Joshua and all the Israelites, and laid them down in the presence of the Lord. 24 Joshua, along with all the people of Israel, seized Achan, the silver, the cloak, the bar of gold, together with Achan's sons and daughters, his cattle, donkeys, and sheep, his tent, and everything else he owned; and they took them to Trouble Valley. 25 And Joshua said, “Why have you brought such trouble on us? The Lord will now bring trouble on you!” All the people then stoned Achan to death; they also stoned and burned his family and possessions. 26 They put a huge pile of stones over him, which is there to this day. That is why that place is still called Trouble Valley.

Then the Lord was no longer furious.

The Capture and Destruction of Ai

The Lord said to Joshua, “Take all the soldiers with you and go on up to Ai. Don't be afraid or discouraged. I will give you victory over the king of Ai; his people, city, and land will be yours. You are to do to Ai and its king what you did to Jericho and its king, but this time you may keep its goods and livestock for yourselves. Prepare to attack the city by surprise from the rear.”

So Joshua got ready to go to Ai with all his soldiers. He picked out thirty thousand of his best troops and sent them out at night with these orders: “Hide on the other side of the city, but not too far away from it; be ready to attack. My men and I will approach the city. When the men of Ai come out against us, we will turn and run, just as we did the first time. They will pursue us until we have led them away from the city. They will think that we are running from them, as we did before. Then you will come out of hiding and capture the city. The Lord your God will give it to you. After you have taken the city, set it on fire, just as the Lord has commanded. These are your orders.” So Joshua sent them out, and they went to their hiding place and waited there, west of Ai, between Ai and Bethel. Joshua spent the night in camp.

10 Early in the morning Joshua got up and called the soldiers together. Then he and the leaders of Israel led them to Ai. 11 The soldiers with him went toward the main entrance to the city and set up camp on the north side, with a valley between themselves and Ai. 12 He took about five thousand men and put them in hiding west of the city, between Ai and Bethel. 13 The soldiers were arranged for battle with the main camp north of the city and the rest of the men to the west. Joshua spent the night in the valley. 14 When the king of Ai saw Joshua's men, he acted quickly. He and all his men went out toward the Jordan Valley to fight the Israelites at the same place as before, not knowing that he was about to be attacked from the rear. 15 Joshua and his men pretended that they were retreating, and ran away toward the barren country. 16 All the men in the city had been called together to go after them, and as they pursued Joshua, they kept getting farther away from the city. 17 Every man in Ai[a] went after the Israelites, and the city was left wide open, with no one to defend it.

18 Then the Lord said to Joshua, “Point your spear at Ai; I am giving it to you.” Joshua did as he was told, 19 and as soon as he lifted his hand, the men who had been hiding got up quickly, ran into the city and captured it. They immediately set the city on fire. 20 When the men of Ai looked back, they saw the smoke rising to the sky. There was no way for them to escape, because the Israelites who had run toward the barren country now turned around to attack them. 21 When Joshua and his men saw that the others had taken the city and that it was on fire, they turned around and began killing the men of Ai. 22 The Israelites in the city now came down to join the battle. So the men of Ai found themselves completely surrounded by Israelites, and they were all killed. No one got away, and no one lived through it 23 except the king of Ai. He was captured and taken to Joshua.

24 The Israelites killed every one of the enemy in the barren country where they had chased them. Then they went back to Ai and killed everyone there. 25-26 Joshua kept his spear pointed at Ai and did not put it down until every person there had been killed. The whole population of Ai was killed that day—twelve thousand men and women. 27 The Israelites kept for themselves the livestock and goods captured in the city, as the Lord had told Joshua. 28 Joshua burned Ai and left it in ruins. It is still like that today. 29 He hanged the king of Ai from a tree and left his body there until evening. At sundown Joshua gave orders for the body to be removed, and it was thrown down at the entrance to the city gate. They covered it with a huge pile of stones, which is still there today.

The Law Is Read at Mount Ebal

30 (A)Then Joshua built on Mount Ebal an altar to the Lord, the God of Israel. 31 (B)He made it according to the instructions that Moses, the Lord's servant, had given the Israelites, as it says in the Law of Moses: “an altar made of stones which have not been cut with iron tools.” On it they offered burnt sacrifices to the Lord, and they also presented their fellowship offerings. 32 There, with the Israelites looking on, Joshua made on the stones[b] a copy of the Law which Moses had written. 33 (C)The Israelites, with their leaders, officers, and judges, as well as the foreigners among them, stood on two sides of the Lord's Covenant Box, facing the levitical priests who carried it. Half of the people stood with their backs to Mount Gerizim and the other half with their backs to Mount Ebal. The Lord's servant Moses had commanded them to do this when the time came for them to receive the blessing. 34 Joshua then read aloud the whole Law, including the blessings and the curses, just as they are written in the book of the Law. 35 Every one of the commandments of Moses was read by Joshua to the whole gathering, which included women and children, as well as the foreigners living among them.

The Gibeonites Deceive Joshua

The victories of Israel became known to all the kings west of the Jordan—in the hills, in the foothills, and all along the coastal plain of the Mediterranean Sea as far north as Lebanon; these were the kings of the Hittites, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites. They all came together and joined forces to fight against Joshua and the Israelites.

Luke 16:1-18

The Shrewd Manager

16 Jesus said to his disciples, “There was once a rich man who had a servant who managed his property. The rich man was told that the manager was wasting his master's money, so he called him in and said, ‘What is this I hear about you? Turn in a complete account of your handling of my property, because you cannot be my manager any longer.’ The servant said to himself, ‘My master is going to dismiss me from my job. What shall I do? I am not strong enough to dig ditches, and I am ashamed to beg. Now I know what I will do! Then when my job is gone, I shall have friends who will welcome me in their homes.’ So he called in all the people who were in debt to his master. He asked the first one, ‘How much do you owe my master?’ ‘One hundred barrels of olive oil,’ he answered. ‘Here is your account,’ the manager told him; ‘sit down and write fifty.’ Then he asked another one, ‘And you—how much do you owe?’ ‘A thousand bushels of wheat,’ he answered. ‘Here is your account,’ the manager told him; ‘write eight hundred.’ As a result the master of this dishonest manager praised him for doing such a shrewd thing; because the people of this world are much more shrewd in handling their affairs than the people who belong to the light.”

(A)And Jesus went on to say, “And so I tell you: make friends for yourselves with worldly wealth, so that when it gives out, you will be welcomed in the eternal home. 10 Whoever is faithful in small matters will be faithful in large ones; whoever is dishonest in small matters will be dishonest in large ones. 11 If, then, you have not been faithful in handling worldly wealth, how can you be trusted with true wealth? 12 And if you have not been faithful with what belongs to someone else, who will give you what belongs to you?

13 (B)“No servant can be the slave of two masters; such a slave will hate one and love the other or will be loyal to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.”

Some Sayings of Jesus(C)

14 When the Pharisees heard all this, they made fun of Jesus, because they loved money. 15 Jesus said to them, “You are the ones who make yourselves look right in other people's sight, but God knows your hearts. For the things that are considered of great value by people are worth nothing in God's sight.

16 (D)“The Law of Moses and the writings of the prophets were in effect up to the time of John the Baptist; since then the Good News about the Kingdom of God is being told, and everyone forces their way in. 17 (E)But it is easier for heaven and earth to disappear than for the smallest detail of the Law to be done away with.

18 (F)“Any man who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery; and the man who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.

Psalm 82

God the Supreme Ruler[a]

82 God presides in the heavenly council;
in the assembly of the gods he gives his decision:
“You must stop judging unjustly;
you must no longer be partial to the wicked!
Defend the rights of the poor and the orphans;
be fair to the needy and the helpless.
Rescue them from the power of evil people.

“How ignorant you are! How stupid!
You are completely corrupt,
and justice has disappeared from the world.
(A)‘You are gods,’ I said;
‘all of you are children of the Most High.’
But you will die like mortals;
your life will end like that of any prince.”

Come, O God, and rule the world;
all the nations are yours.

Joshua 5:1-7:15, Luke 15:1-32, Psalms 81:1-16, Proverbs 13:1

Today is the 12th day of April welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I’m Brian it’s great to be here with you today and every day as we take the steps forward that lead us through the Scriptures. And our next step is in front of us. We’re moving into this brand-new book of Joshua and we’re moving into the promised land. We’re reading from the Good News Translation this week. Joshua chapter 5 verse 1 through 7 verse 15.

Commentary:

Okay. In gospel of Luke today Jesus is being questioned about why He is hanging out with sinners. He even eats with the outcasts. And, so, the Pharisees and the teachers of the law are grumbling, and Jesus responds with three examples about why He is doing what He is doing and these are famous passages. In the first one we have the shepherd leaving the 99 to find the one lost sheep and when he finds it he is so happy that he celebrates. And obviously in this example, the lost sheep, the one are the sinners. And, so, Jesus is basically saying through His life and through His actions that He is hanging out with the people that need to be found. And then He talks about a woman who's…who had 10 silver coins, but lost one of them. 10% of what she had she lost. And, so, she lights a lamp and sweeps her house and looks everywhere until she finds it, and when she does it’s such a relief that she calls her friends and neighbors together and says, “I’m happy I found the coin. Let’s celebrate.” And then Jesus says to those two examples, “in the same way I tell you the angels of God rejoice over one sinner who repents.” And then to drive this point home we come to the very very famous story of the prodigal son. And that is such a famous story that thousands of messages have been given over millennia and this has been looked at from every single angle. But in its context Jesus is responding to the religious leaders and the Pharisees about why He is associating himself with outcasts and sinners. In the story of the prodigal son we have the father, we have the son who does no depart, and we have the son who goes to his father and says give my give me my inheritance early I’m gonna go make my way in the world. And his father does give him what he has coming to him, and he goes and blows it on crazy living. Meanwhile, the father and his other son continue to run the family business while the other son is away doing what he’s doing. Eventually the son that has run off runs out of resources. Finds himself in foreign city in a foreign land and no money. Famine has come upon the land, and he’s got a job and the job is to feed the pigs. But he doesn’t even have enough to eat. And he comes to this awareness that he…he doesn’t deserve to be a son anymore. He can’t just go crawling back to his dad and have any kind of expectation that there’s anything there for him. He chose to leave but he knows his father’s an honorable person and his father has workers. And, so, maybe he could at least get a job with this dad. It would be better to work for his father than it would be to be in this foreign land with no money, and famine, and slopping the pigs. And, so, he heads home, and I quote from the gospel of Luke, “he was still a long way from home when his father saw him.” I’m a father and I have sons and when I think about this story, and I think about my own kids, like I can put myself in the story. The father’s heart was filled with pity, and he ran and threw his arms around his son and kissed him. So, we have the posture of heart of the runaway son, the prodigal son. He now believes and has come to the awareness that he doesn’t deserve anything. He doesn’t even deserve to be called the son. He’s just looking for a place to be near his father, and a place to work. He doesn’t deserve…like he’s come to that place in his life where he realizes he’s not as good as he thinks he is and he needs help, he needs his father. And, so, he says to his father, “I have sinned against God and against you, and I am no longer fit to be called your son.” In this story we put ourselves in this position understanding that we reach this point where we realize we don’t deserve anything from our father. We don’t deserve anything from God. He doesn’t owe us anything. We live our lives kind of entitled, like He does like he’s our squire, we’re gonna say the magic prayers, He’s gonna get right on it because He loves us. And He does. But we can’t fully appreciate the depth of that kind of love until we realize completely and wholeheartedly how much we do not deserve anything. Right? This prodigal son didn’t come back with his head held high, freshly washed, robe with a bunch of arrogance. He came back knowing exactly the truth, he deserves nothing. When a person reaches that point in their life compassion begins to flow, and we see that in this story from the father who saw him from a distance. His heart was filled with pity, and he ran and threw his arms around his son and kissed him. It’s as if his son has come back from the dead, has come back from far off. And the father is so overjoyed that’s a great feast happens, which is when we get to see the son that didn’t leave and his posture. And his posture is he doesn’t want anything to do with the party for the son who left. He doesn’t want anything to do with his brother. He’s mad at his father because he has stayed faithful. He has been faithful. He has obeyed his father. He has done what he’s supposed to do, and he feels like he never got rewarded. The brother who took off and blew his money and destroyed his life and has come back empty-handed with his hat in his hand gets a big feast. And in this story, this is an opportunity for us to examine our own selves. But in this story, these are the people that are like the scribes and the Pharisees and the teachers of religious law. They’ve been trying to do the right thing. And a sinner can come in and get a party when they worked their whole lives to not be a sinner. That doesn’t seem fair. I mean, doesn’t living a godly life and actually really devoting yourself to God count for something? Why is it that sinners get all the celebrations? These are the kinds of things that the son who didn’t leave confronts his father with. Or to just read it from the Scriptures, “the son said to his father, look, all these years I have worked for you like a slave, and I have never disobeyed your orders. What have you given me? Not even a goat for me to have a feast with my friends. But this son of yours wasted all your property on prostitutes and when he comes back home, you kill the prize calf for him.” So, he’s basically saying, look, I have been loyal. I have been faithful. I have been a good son. I have stayed here with you. I have worked for you, and you have given me nothing. And this person who has taken advantage of you comes back and we throw a big party? And it really exposes the rub, doesn’t it? We can see why the son would be mad. He’s been faithful. He’s been loyal. He’s obeyed. He’s done the right thing. And it can be easy for us to put ourselves in a position. Like I’ve been trying to walk with God by faith for so long. And yes, the Lord is with me. And yes, the Lord comes through, but I will look out in the world, and I see the sinners just having a heyday and I’m trying to just be faithful and survive when everybody around me who doesn’t care anything about the Lord seems to be having a far greater life. It’s here that the father brings perspective. “My son, the father answered. You are always here with me and everything I have is yours. But we had to celebrate and be happy because your brother was dead, but now he’s alive. He was lost but now he has been found.” So, the perspective for the one, the faithful son, the one who obeyed, the one who didn’t leave is the reminder that he never left his father’s presence and everything his father has belongs to him. The beauty and the brilliance of a parable like this one is there are three characters in this story and any one of those characters we can put ourselves in that position and look at this story from that position and understand perspective all the way around. We can understand the person who leaves his father and takes his inheritance and blows it and ruins his life and becomes broken and then returns. We can understand the position of the father who loves both of his children and can be nothing but overjoyed at the return of his child who was lost to him. All of that without losing any love for the faithful son who never left. The faithful son who never left has always been with them. They are close. They are working together. He will receive his inheritance. Everything that the father owns will belong to that son. But we can also see the perspective of the son who’s like, I’m trying to do the right thing here. I’m trying to walk the narrow path, and everything that I see around me shows me that everyone else is prosperous. What am I doing this for? Of course, the answer to that comes from the father. You are always here with me, right? You are here in my presence and everything I have is yours. So, let’s spend some time today just rethinking this story. It’s very famous. We probably already know it very well. But If we consider the different facets, if we consider the different characters in the story we find out a lot about ourselves because the perspective of each person in this story is something that we can reflect upon and even identify with.

Prayer:

Father, we invite You into this. All that we’re reading today is an answer to the question about why You would hang out with people that seem to be the riffraff of the world, that seem to be the outcasts of the world, the sinners of the world, the people that aren’t doing the right thing. And we realize that that has been each one of us and we can grow incredibly arrogant as we walk with You and look down upon other people that You love deeply and are awaiting their return. May we share in that joy with You when another one who was lost is found. Come Holy Spirit we pray. In the mighty name of Jesus, we ask. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Dear Lord, we lift up Liz from Louisiana to You. She has a medical school board exam on April 30th and I…I just lift her up to You and I ask for You to free her mind, give her peace and confidence so that the answers that she already knows flow to her freely and easily as she ponders each question. Make her brain work the way it’s supposed to work chemically electrically and spiritually so that there’s no blocking and no anxiety during this test Lord. And Liz, I ask you to pray this same thing. Pray for God to give you the peace and the confidence and to show you the answers while you’re taking this test and even while you’re studying for it so that the anxiety melts away. It is in Jesus’ name that I do pray this. Amen. It’s your brother Bart from Kentucky and I’m walking in the light.

Hey DAB family this is I Lean on the Lord from San Angelo TX and I am calling in for Liz from Louisiana. Sweet girl you have worked so hard to this point and boards are intimidating. You will do fine. You have committed yourself to an education. You have dedicated yourself in studies and have taken examinations along the way to show that you are competent. That information is in your mind. Ask the Lord continuously for His peace and that you are able to recall the information that you do know and that you have committed to memory. You are going to be a fabulous doctor. You are compassionate and kind and your love the Lord and he has great plans for you. So, Father I come before You and I ask that You do give Your peace, Your wisdom to Liz as she studies for her board, Father that in the midst of the peace that You bless her with she is able to recall the information that she knows. Father, we thank You for the calling You have placed on her life to be able to heal people, help people, love on people and share You through the profession that You have called her to. And it’s in Jesus name that I pray. Liz you’ve put a lot of work into this and you will do well. Finally, I want to thank the DAB family for being there, praying, sending encouragement, joys that you share. Brian and the Hardin family thank you so much. I’ve been a part of this community as a result of a dear friend Kathy Brown introducing me to this, I don’t know four or five years ago and it is it’s a blessing between the reading of the scripture, the commentary, and then getting to know the family around the campfire. So, love you DAB family. I lean on the Lord from Texas.

Hi, this message is for Aaron who called in for April 8th. You had recently been diagnosed with AML and then on top of that had been diagnosed with fungal lesions in your brain both of which are putting you in a pretty dire state. And you said you were…you were like I’m not sure how God’s gonna pull this off. And, so, I just want to encourage you. My mother-in-law was diagnosed with AML about 20 years ago and about a few days into her treatment for AML she was also diagnosed with a rare blood disorder of TPT. And the treatment for the TPT aggravated the AML and the treatment for the AML aggravated the… We were in dire straits. We threw ourselves at the mercy seat of God. And I want you to know that she was healed of both of those diseases. And the doctors could not explain it, they were like we don’t know how you survived all that. But we knew that it was the grace of God and His healing hand upon her. So, she lived an additional 15 years past all of that and then she had another round of AML which unfortunately took her life in February 2020. But I just want to encourage you that I have seen God heal people from two different diseases that should have taken them out. And, so, brother I’m praying for you. I…I just know that God can touch you and he can bring about something that we cannot even ask for or imagine in this natural life. But his supernatural power goes beyond all those things to do what He does. And, so, I’ll be praying for you. This is Iva from Ohio.

Hi this is Victoria Soldier calling to pray for some of the DABbers. I wanted to pray for the daughter Genesis who is cutting herself and she’s going through things and trying to…suicidal thoughts. I want to pray for my precious baby and I want to pray for Susan who’s calling from Mississippi about her son and his wife who are on drugs and how she’s taking care of the child and praying that the children that are there will get with the child and realize it’s not the child’s fault and give her love because she really needs love and pray that that the son and his wife will lose their desire for drugs and God will heal them. Want to pray for Dana also. She called for prayer for her brother…Annie who called for prayer for her brother and I want to pray for Ben and Sarah who’s trying to adopt their child in Liberia and pray that everything goes fine. Gracious Father You have Your way. In the name of Jesus, You have Your way with that precious girl that’s cutting herself, that precious girl that doesn’t know with the confusion. Lord, I rebuke the enemy on every hand that is trying to take that child’s life and trying to do evil things to her life. Lord, You deliver her with Your mighty hand. Lord, You have Your way in the lives of those precious mother and Father that are both on drugs. Lord, You just…You curse the…You curse the desire of the drug Lord and give them…give them…clean…clean out the cobwebs of their lives and give them the strength to get over it Lord and to move on, Lord to be delivered from it with Your mighty hand and bless that precious little girl to give those others so much love that they can never resist even if they try. Father, You have Your way. You bless that mother for being the mother that You’re calling for, a mother that can take in her grandchildren and wants to do it with all her heart. Lord, I ask You to bless that house tremendously in the name of Jesus…

Just before Covid started I was on one of my walks which takes me through a little park area with an old mill and I saw this little squirrel. He would be running back and forth. And I thought, you know what, I’ll take him some peanuts next time. So, I did. And I put the peanuts all over and watched as he ran around and got them but. Be wouldn’t do it when I was near him. So…but I gradually started to get closer to him and closer to him. Well, within a couple years this…this…this squirrel knows me so well he would come running when the car drives up and the car isn’t close to…to where he is. As I step out, I’d see him running and I’d say, how did he know hits me? And I read up about the squirrel and apparently squirrels are able to…to discern your footsteps. I said oh, that’s why he knows them coming. So, we gradually got to the place where I could hold the peanuts in my hand, and he would come and take them out, put them in my purse and he’d come and take them out. I named him Zoomer because we were in the age of zooming. But they found later on that it was a girl because it had babies. So, the name has changed to Zuma. So, as I’m thinking about that, that squirrel knows my footsteps. God knows everything about us. The little hair on our heads He has numbered. And, so, I know that He’s watching over us and trying to gather us in His arms as we’re going through such difficult moments. So, I just want to remind you all, God sees our tears. He hears every prayer, and He answers. Maybe it’s not the way we want but He does. I love you all. Have a wonderful weekend. Soaring on Eagles wings.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Tuesday April 12, 2022 (NIV)

Joshua 5:1-7:15

All the Amorite kings west of the Jordan and all the Canaanite kings along the Mediterranean Sea heard that the Lord had dried up the Jordan until the people of Israel had crossed it. They became afraid and lost their courage because of the Israelites.

The Circumcision at Gilgal

Then the Lord told Joshua, “Make some knives out of flint and circumcise the Israelites.” So Joshua did as the Lord had commanded, and he circumcised the Israelites at a place called Circumcision Hill. 4-6 (A)When the people of Israel left Egypt, all the males were already circumcised. However, during the forty years the people spent crossing the desert, none of the baby boys had been circumcised. Also, by the end of that time all the men who were of fighting age when they left Egypt had died because they had disobeyed the Lord. Just as he had sworn, they were not allowed to see the rich and fertile land that he had promised their ancestors. The sons of these men had never been circumcised, and it was this new generation that Joshua circumcised.

After the circumcision was completed, the whole nation stayed in the camp until the wounds had healed. The Lord said to Joshua, “Today I have removed from you the disgrace of being slaves in Egypt.” That is why the place was named Gilgal,[a] the name it still has.

10 (B)While the Israelites were camping at Gilgal on the plain near Jericho, they observed Passover on the evening of the fourteenth day of the month. 11 The next day was the first time they ate food grown in Canaan: roasted grain and bread made without yeast. 12 (C)The manna stopped falling then, and the Israelites no longer had any. From that time on they ate food grown in Canaan.

Joshua and the Man with a Sword

13 While Joshua was near Jericho, he suddenly saw a man standing in front of him, holding a sword. Joshua went up to him and asked, “Are you one of our soldiers, or an enemy?”

14 “Neither,” the man answered. “I am here as the commander of the Lord's army.”

Joshua threw himself on the ground in worship and said, “I am your servant, sir. What do you want me to do?”

15 And the commander of the Lord's army told him, “Take your sandals off; you are standing on holy ground.” And Joshua did as he was told.

The Fall of Jericho

The gates of Jericho were kept shut and guarded to keep the Israelites out. No one could enter or leave the city. The Lord said to Joshua, “I am putting into your hands Jericho, with its king and all its brave soldiers. You and your soldiers are to march around the city once a day for six days. Seven priests, each carrying a trumpet, are to go in front of the Covenant Box. On the seventh day you and your soldiers are to march around the city seven times while the priests blow the trumpets. Then they are to sound one long note. As soon as you hear it, all the people are to give a loud shout, and the city walls will collapse. Then the whole army will go straight into the city.”

Joshua called the priests and told them, “Take the Covenant Box, and seven of you go in front of it, carrying trumpets.” Then he ordered the people to start marching around the city, with an advance guard going on ahead of the Lord's Covenant Box.

8-9 So, just as Joshua had ordered, an advance guard started out ahead of the priests who were blowing trumpets; behind these came the priests who were carrying the Covenant Box, followed by a rear guard. All this time the trumpets were sounding. 10 But Joshua had ordered the people not to shout, not to say a word until he gave the order. 11 So he had this group of men take the Lord's Covenant Box around the city one time. Then they came back to camp and spent the night there.

12-13 Joshua got up early the next morning, and for the second time the priests and soldiers marched around the city in the same order as the day before: first, the advance guard; next, the seven priests blowing the seven trumpets; then, the priests carrying the Lord's Covenant Box; and finally, the rear guard. All this time the trumpets were sounding. 14 On this second day they again marched around the city one time and then returned to camp. They did this for six days.

15 On the seventh day they got up at daybreak and marched seven times around the city in the same way—this was the only day that they marched around it seven times. 16 The seventh time around, when the priests were about to sound the trumpets, Joshua ordered the people to shout, and he said, “The Lord has given you the city! 17 The city and everything in it must be totally destroyed as an offering to the Lord. Only the prostitute Rahab and her household will be spared, because she hid our spies. 18 But you are not to take anything that is to be destroyed; if you do, you will bring trouble and destruction on the Israelite camp. 19 Everything made of silver, gold, bronze, or iron is set apart for the Lord. It is to be put in the Lord's treasury.”

20 (D)So the priests blew the trumpets. As soon as the people heard it, they gave a loud shout, and the walls collapsed. Then all the army went straight up the hill into the city and captured it. 21 With their swords they killed everyone in the city, men and women, young and old. They also killed the cattle, sheep, and donkeys.

22 Joshua then told the two men who had served as spies, “Go into the prostitute's house, and bring her and her family out, as you promised her.” 23 So they went and brought Rahab out, along with her father and mother, her brothers, and the rest of her family. They took them all, family and slaves, to safety near the Israelite camp. 24 Then they set fire to the city and burned it to the ground, along with everything in it, except the things made of gold, silver, bronze, and iron, which they took and put in the Lord's treasury. 25 (E)But Joshua spared the lives of the prostitute Rahab and all her relatives, because she had hidden the two spies that he had sent to Jericho. (Her descendants have lived in Israel to this day.)

26 (F)At this time Joshua issued a solemn warning: “Anyone who tries to rebuild the city of Jericho will be under the Lord's curse.

Whoever lays the foundation will lose his oldest son;
Whoever builds the gates will lose his youngest.”

27 So the Lord was with Joshua, and his fame spread through the whole country.

Achan's Sin

The Lord's command to Israel not to take from Jericho anything that was to be destroyed was not obeyed. A man named Achan disobeyed that order, and so the Lord was furious with the Israelites. (Achan was the son of Carmi and grandson of Zabdi, and belonged to the clan of Zerah, a part of the tribe of Judah.)

Joshua sent some men from Jericho to Ai, a city east of Bethel, near Bethaven, with orders to go and explore the land. When they had done so, they reported back to Joshua: “There is no need for everyone to attack Ai. Send only about two or three thousand men. Don't send the whole army up there to fight; it is not a large city.” So about three thousand Israelites made the attack, but they were forced to retreat. The men of Ai chased them from the city gate as far as some quarries and killed about thirty-six of them on the way down the hill. Then the Israelites lost their courage and were afraid.

Joshua and the leaders of Israel tore their clothes in grief, threw themselves to the ground before the Lord's Covenant Box, and lay there till evening, with dust on their heads to show their sorrow. And Joshua said, “Sovereign Lord! Why did you bring us across the Jordan at all? To turn us over to the Amorites? To destroy us? Why didn't we just stay on the other side of the Jordan? What can I say, O Lord, now that Israel has retreated from the enemy? The Canaanites and everyone else in the country will hear about it. They will surround us and kill every one of us! And then what will you do to protect your honor?”

10 The Lord said to Joshua, “Get up! Why are you lying on the ground like this? 11 Israel has sinned! They have broken the agreement with me that I ordered them to keep. They have taken some of the things condemned to destruction. They stole them, lied about it, and put them with their own things. 12 This is why the Israelites cannot stand against their enemies. They retreat from them because they themselves have now been condemned to destruction! I will not stay with you any longer unless you destroy the things you were ordered not to take! 13 Get up! Purify the people and get them ready to come before me. Tell them to be ready tomorrow, because I, the Lord God of Israel, have this to say: ‘Israel, you have in your possession some things that I ordered you to destroy! You cannot stand against your enemies until you get rid of these things!’ 14 So tell them that in the morning they will be brought forward, tribe by tribe. The tribe that I pick out will then come forward, clan by clan. The clan that I pick out will come forward, family by family. The family that I pick out will come forward, one by one. 15 The one who is then picked out and found with the condemned goods will be burned, along with his family and everything he owns, for he has brought terrible shame on Israel and has broken my covenant.”

The Lost Sheep(A)

15 (B)One day when many tax collectors and other outcasts came to listen to Jesus, the Pharisees and the teachers of the Law started grumbling, “This man welcomes outcasts and even eats with them!” So Jesus told them this parable:

“Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them—what do you do? You leave the other ninety-nine sheep in the pasture and go looking for the one that got lost until you find it. When you find it, you are so happy that you put it on your shoulders and carry it back home. Then you call your friends and neighbors together and say to them, ‘I am so happy I found my lost sheep. Let us celebrate!’ In the same way, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine respectable people who do not need to repent.

The Lost Coin

“Or suppose a woman who has ten silver coins loses one of them—what does she do? She lights a lamp, sweeps her house, and looks carefully everywhere until she finds it. When she finds it, she calls her friends and neighbors together, and says to them, ‘I am so happy I found the coin I lost. Let us celebrate!’ 10 In the same way, I tell you, the angels of God rejoice over one sinner who repents.”

The Lost Son

11 Jesus went on to say, “There was once a man who had two sons. 12 The younger one said to him, ‘Father, give me my share of the property now.’ So the man divided his property between his two sons. 13 After a few days the younger son sold his part of the property and left home with the money. He went to a country far away, where he wasted his money in reckless living. 14 He spent everything he had. Then a severe famine spread over that country, and he was left without a thing. 15 So he went to work for one of the citizens of that country, who sent him out to his farm to take care of the pigs. 16 He wished he could fill himself with the bean pods the pigs ate, but no one gave him anything to eat. 17 At last he came to his senses and said, ‘All my father's hired workers have more than they can eat, and here I am about to starve! 18 I will get up and go to my father and say, “Father, I have sinned against God and against you. 19 I am no longer fit to be called your son; treat me as one of your hired workers.”’ 20 So he got up and started back to his father.

“He was still a long way from home when his father saw him; his heart was filled with pity, and he ran, threw his arms around his son, and kissed him. 21 ‘Father,’ the son said, ‘I have sinned against God and against you. I am no longer fit to be called your son.’ 22 But the father called to his servants. ‘Hurry!’ he said. ‘Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and shoes on his feet. 23 Then go and get the prize calf and kill it, and let us celebrate with a feast! 24 For this son of mine was dead, but now he is alive; he was lost, but now he has been found.’ And so the feasting began.

25 “In the meantime the older son was out in the field. On his way back, when he came close to the house, he heard the music and dancing. 26 So he called one of the servants and asked him, ‘What's going on?’ 27 ‘Your brother has come back home,’ the servant answered, ‘and your father has killed the prize calf, because he got him back safe and sound.’ 28 The older brother was so angry that he would not go into the house; so his father came out and begged him to come in. 29 But he spoke back to his father, ‘Look, all these years I have worked for you like a slave, and I have never disobeyed your orders. What have you given me? Not even a goat for me to have a feast with my friends! 30 But this son of yours wasted all your property on prostitutes, and when he comes back home, you kill the prize calf for him!’ 31 ‘My son,’ the father answered, ‘you are always here with me, and everything I have is yours. 32 But we had to celebrate and be happy, because your brother was dead, but now he is alive; he was lost, but now he has been found.’”

Psalm 81

A Song for a Festival[a]

81 Shout for joy to God our defender;
sing praise to the God of Jacob!
Start the music and beat the tambourines;
play pleasant music on the harps and the lyres.
(A)Blow the trumpet for the festival,
when the moon is new and when the moon is full.
This is the law in Israel,
an order from the God of Jacob.
He gave it to the people of Israel
when he attacked the land of Egypt.

I hear an unknown voice saying,
“I took the burdens off your backs;
I let you put down your loads of bricks.
(B)When you were in trouble, you called to me, and I saved you.
From my hiding place in the storm, I answered you.
I put you to the test at the springs of Meribah.
Listen, my people, to my warning;
Israel, how I wish you would listen to me!
(C)You must never worship another god.
10 I am the Lord your God,
who brought you out of Egypt.
Open your mouth, and I will feed you.

11 “But my people would not listen to me;
Israel would not obey me.
12 So I let them go their stubborn ways
and do whatever they wanted.
13 How I wish my people would listen to me;
how I wish they would obey me!
14 I would quickly defeat their enemies
and conquer all their foes.
15 Those who hate me would bow in fear before me;
their punishment would last forever.
16 But I would feed you with the finest wheat
and satisfy you with wild honey.”

Joshua 3:1-4:24, Luke 14:7-35, Psalm 80:1-19, Proverbs 12:27-28

Today is the 11th day of April, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian and it is great to be here with you today as we continue our journey forward. Yesterday, as we began this brand-new shiny sparkly week we transitioned away from the Book of Deuteronomy, completing that and began the Book of Joshua which is where we are now in preparation to finally, like this mythic land of the Promised Land, is a land we are about to set foot in. So, let’s take the next step forward. We’re reading from the Good News Translation this week, Joshua chapters 3 and 4.

Commentary/Prayer:

Jesus, we love You and as we read the narrative in the Gospel of Luke today, we see very, very abundantly clear that a relationship with You is an all or nothing proposition. It is always on, never off, on going, all or nothing, it’s to love You with all of our heart, soul, mind and strength and to love our neighbors as ourselves. This is fully given over, and You’v told to us today by example, to count the cost, to understand what’s going on here, be clearheaded about it. This is all or nothing and we can think about that and think about what we’re gonna lose by sacrificing our rights and wrongs and everything that we hold onto. When what You are doing is inviting us to understand that it was never ours in the first place. Everything that we have, has been given to us by Your hand, including the next breath. We are grateful, we are thankful You are giving us a perspective, a way of looking at things, that You love us and You have gone all in, including sacrificing Your very life. And so that’s how this works. We in turn, do the same, to be living sacrifice is available to You for whatever You want to do. And we confess that, that at times is fair and at other times we are so distracted, we wouldn’t know what You wanted us to do. So, these things have to change and they are because You are sanctifying us and transforming us and so, knowing that this is an all in thing, lets us know where we are going. And the things that we would cling to that would pull us away from You are going to be the things that we won’t be able to cling to. So come, Holy Spirit, set our hearts posture, that we might fall deeply in love with You irreversibly, in the name of Jesus, we ask. Amen.

Prayer and Encouragements:

Hello Daily Audio Bible Family, this is Jimmy from the East Coast. I just wanted to say a couple prayers for some of the DABers. The young lady whose brother left home after a bad fight, which kind of left her little bit upset. I just pray for her and her family that the Lord’s love and peace will be of over them and I pray that her brothers heart will change, and soften and come back home. I just pray peace over her at night, I know she worries. And I pray blessing over that family. And I also would like to pray for Shanda who is trying to be a good mother and matriarch and wife in her family by, you know, curbing those desires to spend a little here and there, comfort, I understand. I’m both sides of the coin. I am, I used to be like your husband, the one doing the bills and now I’m the only one and sometimes it gets to me to and even if it’s just make coffee at home. It helps, so I just pray and I thank you that you and I know God thinks that you are thinking about it and you’re wanting to change. That’s all that matters. And I just pray that God will give you the strength to do so and if there’s anything underlining that He will show you. I pray blessing and peace over your family.

This message is for God’s Chosen. My name is Mother Many and I am from Georgia also. I heard your prayer request this morning and my heart went out to you. I want to encourage you by letting you know that the Lord is with you. He hears your cry, He sees and collects every tear that you cry. Know that the Lord your God is with you; He will strengthen you and deliver you. Isaiah 41:10 tells us, Fear thou not, for I am with thee, be not dismayed for I am thou God, I will strengthen thee, yeah I will help thee, I will uphold thee with my righteous right hand. So, know that the Lord is with you, know that they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength. They shall mount up with wings as eagles, they shall run and not be weary. They shall walk and not faint. Cast your cares upon the Lord because He cares for you. This is Mother Many in Georgia. I am new to Audio Bible for less than a year but I thank you Brian and all the Hardin family and I pray daily for all of the DAB family. May God Bless you all.

Good morning, this is Dr. Mark from Alexandra, Virginia calling into to pray for 12-year-old Genesis and for her mom. Father God, in the name of Jesus we come before You at this time bringing You Genesis before You, asking You Lord, as You will deliver her from thoughts of suicide Lord God. We pray for her, Lord God that You will send her friends, Godly friends, who would be there for her. Who will be able to lead her in the path of righteousness, my God. Holy Spirit, You would speak to her heart and let her know that she is loved and that she is Your daughter. While I pray that You would speak to her heart and let her know that God, that she is special. And I pray for mom, who is asking for discernment. I pray that the discernment of the Holy Spirit would grant mom the wisdom that she needs in order to love her through this process. Thank You Father God for all that You’re doing. Praying for all the DABers and I pray that You would keep us …

Hey friends, this is Eyes of a Dove. This morning I, try to get through this without crying. I am not engaged to Billy anymore. I gave him his ring back last night. And preparing to move me and my kids to the Ravensdell Home alone. And I’m just feeling scared and I’m exhausted, I cried all night. I called a couple friends, prayed. The budget will be tight with me carrying everything. Pray God gives me finances and income to be able to support my three kids on my own. Just pray for Billy and I that, if it is in the end that God makes it as least painful as possible. I don’t know. It’s a really hard time. He wants time alone with his daughter, I don’t want to be in a relationship out of wedlock after four years. So, he’s decided for the summer we shall be separate, live separate.  And he’s also picked up a trucking job, so now he’s going to be gone every other week, on the road. I don’t know how this is gonna help our relationship if he’s gone all the time. So, just pray for us.

Hello, this is Morning Star from Canada. I just want to, just say hello to Richard the Taxi Driver from Montreal. I heard you share today and I love it when you call in. I’m actually from Montreal, I’m not living in Montreal right now but that’s where I was born and raised, in Montreal. And just hearing your voice makes me miss Montreal. So, I just want to say hello to you Richard, The Taxi Driver and God Bless. I also want to pray for the gentlemen who called in, in regards to, I believe its Leukemia, something like that and some brain issues. And I just want to pray for you and just let you know that just, hearing your voice and your request just really broke my heart. Not only because of that situation that you are in but because of the great courage you have and that is rare and I know it comes from the Lord and I’m thanking Him. Thank the Lord for your courage but I also pray that God will be merciful to you and will touch you in a very special and miraculous way. Lastly, just for, I believe it was a gal named Liz. She was calling about some medical exams that she is, struggles with, depression and of course I can only imagine what that would be like after studying for so, for so long. So, we just pray Holy Spirit that You will just be with Liz. We pray oh God, that You will help her to focus and help her to remember everything that she’s been taught. We just leave her in your care. Thank you DABers. Have a great day.

Joshua 3-4

The People of Israel Cross the Jordan

The next morning Joshua and all the people of Israel got up early, left the camp at Acacia, and went to the Jordan, where they camped while waiting to cross it. Three days later the leaders went through the camp and told the people, “When you see the priests carrying the Covenant Box of the Lord your God, break camp and follow them. You have never been here before, so they will show you the way to go. But do not get near the Covenant Box; stay about half a mile behind it.”

Joshua told the people, “Purify yourselves, because tomorrow the Lord will perform miracles among you.” Then he told the priests to take the Covenant Box and go with it ahead of the people. They did as he said.

The Lord said to Joshua, “What I do today will make all the people of Israel begin to honor you as a great man, and they will realize that I am with you as I was with Moses. Tell the priests carrying the Covenant Box that when they reach the river, they must wade in and stand near the bank.”

Then Joshua said to the people, “Come here and listen to what the Lord your God has to say. 10 As you advance, he will surely drive out the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Hivites, the Perizzites, the Girgashites, the Amorites, and the Jebusites. You will know that the living God is among you 11 when the Covenant Box of the Lord of all the earth crosses the Jordan ahead of you. 12 Now choose twelve men, one from each of the tribes of Israel. 13 When the priests who carry the Covenant Box of the Lord of all the earth put their feet in the water, the Jordan will stop flowing, and the water coming downstream will pile up in one place.”

14-15 It was harvest time, and the river was in flood.

When the people left the camp to cross the Jordan, the priests went ahead of them, carrying the Covenant Box. As soon as the priests stepped into the river, 16 the water stopped flowing and piled up, far upstream at Adam, the city beside Zarethan. The flow downstream to the Dead Sea was completely cut off, and the people were able to cross over near Jericho. 17 While the people walked across on dry ground, the priests carrying the Lord's Covenant Box stood on dry ground in the middle of the Jordan until all the people had crossed over.

Memorial Stones Are Set Up

When the whole nation had crossed the Jordan, the Lord said to Joshua, “Choose twelve men, one from each tribe, and command them to take twelve stones out of the middle of the Jordan, from the very place where the priests were standing. Tell them to carry these stones with them and to put them down where you camp tonight.”

Then Joshua called the twelve men he had chosen, and he told them, “Go into the Jordan ahead of the Covenant Box of the Lord your God. Each one of you take a stone on your shoulder, one for each of the tribes of Israel. These stones will remind the people of what the Lord has done. In the future, when your children ask what these stones mean to you, you will tell them that the water of the Jordan stopped flowing when the Lord's Covenant Box crossed the river. These stones will always remind the people of Israel of what happened here.”

The men followed Joshua's orders. As the Lord had commanded Joshua, they took twelve stones from the middle of the Jordan, one for each of the tribes of Israel, carried them to the camping place, and put them down there. Joshua also set up twelve stones in the middle of the Jordan, where the priests carrying the Covenant Box had stood. (Those stones are still there.) 10 The priests stood in the middle of the Jordan until everything had been done that the Lord ordered Joshua to tell the people to do. This is what Moses had commanded.

The people hurried across the river. 11 When they were all on the other side, the priests with the Lord's Covenant Box went on ahead of the people. 12 The men of the tribes of Reuben and Gad and of half the tribe of Manasseh, ready for battle, crossed ahead of the rest of the people, as Moses had told them to do. 13 In the presence of the Lord about forty thousand men ready for war crossed over to the plain near Jericho. 14 What the Lord did that day made the people of Israel consider Joshua a great man. They honored him all his life, just as they had honored Moses.

15 Then the Lord told Joshua 16 to command the priests carrying the Covenant Box to come up out of the Jordan. 17 Joshua did so, 18 and when the priests reached the riverbank, the river began flowing once more and flooded its banks again.

19 The people crossed the Jordan on the tenth day of the first month and camped at Gilgal, east of Jericho. 20 There Joshua set up the twelve stones taken from the Jordan. 21 And he said to the people of Israel, “In the future, when your children ask you what these stones mean, 22 you will tell them about the time when Israel crossed the Jordan on dry ground. 23 Tell them that the Lord your God dried up the water of the Jordan for you until you had crossed, just as he dried up the Red Sea for us. 24 Because of this everyone on earth will know how great the Lord's power is, and you will honor the Lord your God forever.”

Luke 14:7-35

Humility and Hospitality

Jesus noticed how some of the guests were choosing the best places, so he told this parable to all of them: (A)“When someone invites you to a wedding feast, do not sit down in the best place. It could happen that someone more important than you has been invited, and your host, who invited both of you, would have to come and say to you, ‘Let him have this place.’ Then you would be embarrassed and have to sit in the lowest place. 10 Instead, when you are invited, go and sit in the lowest place, so that your host will come to you and say, ‘Come on up, my friend, to a better place.’ This will bring you honor in the presence of all the other guests. 11 (B)For those who make themselves great will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be made great.”

12 Then Jesus said to his host, “When you give a lunch or a dinner, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or your rich neighbors—for they will invite you back, and in this way you will be paid for what you did. 13 When you give a feast, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind; 14 and you will be blessed, because they are not able to pay you back. God will repay you on the day the good people rise from death.”

The Parable of the Great Feast(C)

15 When one of the guests sitting at the table heard this, he said to Jesus, “How happy are those who will sit down at the feast in the Kingdom of God!”

16 Jesus said to him, “There was once a man who was giving a great feast to which he invited many people. 17 When it was time for the feast, he sent his servant to tell his guests, ‘Come, everything is ready!’ 18 But they all began, one after another, to make excuses. The first one told the servant, ‘I have bought a field and must go and look at it; please accept my apologies.’ 19 Another one said, ‘I have bought five pairs of oxen and am on my way to try them out; please accept my apologies.’ 20 Another one said, ‘I have just gotten married, and for that reason I cannot come.’ 21 The servant went back and told all this to his master. The master was furious and said to his servant, ‘Hurry out to the streets and alleys of the town, and bring back the poor, the crippled, the blind, and the lame.’ 22 Soon the servant said, ‘Your order has been carried out, sir, but there is room for more.’ 23 So the master said to the servant, ‘Go out to the country roads and lanes and make people come in, so that my house will be full. 24 I tell you all that none of those who were invited will taste my dinner!’”

The Cost of Being a Disciple(D)

25 Once when large crowds of people were going along with Jesus, he turned and said to them, 26 (E)“Those who come to me cannot be my disciples unless they love me more than they love father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, and themselves as well. 27 (F)Those who do not carry their own cross and come after me cannot be my disciples. 28 If one of you is planning to build a tower, you sit down first and figure out what it will cost, to see if you have enough money to finish the job. 29 If you don't, you will not be able to finish the tower after laying the foundation; and all who see what happened will make fun of you. 30 ‘You began to build but can't finish the job!’ they will say. 31 If a king goes out with ten thousand men to fight another king who comes against him with twenty thousand men, he will sit down first and decide if he is strong enough to face that other king. 32 If he isn't, he will send messengers to meet the other king to ask for terms of peace while he is still a long way off. 33 In the same way,” concluded Jesus, “none of you can be my disciple unless you give up everything you have.

Worthless Salt(G)

34 “Salt is good, but if it loses its saltiness, there is no way to make it salty again. 35 It is no good for the soil or for the manure pile; it is thrown away. Listen, then, if you have ears!”

Psalm 80

A Prayer for the Nation's Restoration[a]

80 (A)Listen to us, O Shepherd of Israel;
hear us, leader of your flock.
Seated on your throne above the winged creatures,
reveal yourself to the tribes of Ephraim, Benjamin, and Manasseh.
Show us your strength;
come and save us!

Bring us back, O God!
Show us your mercy, and we will be saved!

How much longer, Lord God Almighty,
will you be angry with your people's prayers?
You have given us sorrow to eat,
a large cup of tears to drink.
You let the surrounding nations fight over our land;
our enemies insult us.

Bring us back, Almighty God!
Show us your mercy, and we will be saved!

You brought a grapevine out of Egypt;
you drove out other nations and planted it in their land.
You cleared a place for it to grow;
its roots went deep, and it spread out over the whole land.
10 It covered the hills with its shade;
its branches overshadowed the giant cedars.
11 It extended its branches to the Mediterranean Sea
and as far as the Euphrates River.
12 Why did you break down the fences around it?
Now anyone passing by can steal its grapes;
13 wild hogs trample it down,
and wild animals feed on it.

14 Turn to us, Almighty God!
Look down from heaven at us;
come and save your people!
15 Come and save this grapevine that you planted,
this young vine you made grow so strong!

16 Our enemies have set it on fire and cut it down;
look at them in anger and destroy them!
17 Preserve and protect the people you have chosen,
the nation you made so strong.
18 We will never turn away from you again;
keep us alive, and we will praise you.

19 Bring us back, Lord God Almighty.
Show us your mercy, and we will be saved.

Deuteronomy 34:1 - Joshua 2:24, Luke 13:22-14:6, Psalms 79:1-13, Proverbs 12:26

Today is the 10th day of April welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I’m Brian it’s wonderful to be here with you today. It always is wonderful when come to the threshold of a brand-new week and swing open the door and walk through it together and sense of fresh start. It’s all out in front of us waiting for us to live. We get to live this week and tell the story of God…God’s goodness with our lives. And speaking of new beginnings we have a new beginning today. So, we will conclude the book of Deuteronomy which means we will conclude the Torah or the Pentateuch, which means we will complete the first grouping of books in our year. And, so, if we’ve been using the Daily Audio Bible app and checking off our days we’ll see, we’ll get the tour badge. We’ll see that we have accomplished this grouping of books, which invariably means we will be moving it at some new territory. So, we’ll finish Deuteronomy today and begin the next book, which is the book of Joshua. And we’ll talk about that in a few minutes, but first we’re reading from the good news translation this week. Deuteronomy chapter 34.

Introduction to the book of Joshua:

Will transcribe later today…

Prayer:

Father, we thank you for your word and we thank you for this brand-new shiny sparkly week that we are entering and we thank you for this transition into some new territory in the story that we’ve been following. Now we are looking into the promised land. Now we have this new leader. And, so, Holy Spirit come as we move into that, into those stories and to those people’s lives, that you would allow the Scriptures to be a mirror into our own souls, and that you lead and guide and direct us on the narrow path that leads to life. We pray this in the precious name of Jesus. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hello DABbers this is Judy I’m calling from New York and I just want to lift God’s Chosen from Georgia up in prayer. I felt you sister. I felt you. I know what it means to walk in the wilderness, to have such difficult times in our lives and to feel like God is not with us. You know, that is the lies of the enemy when he comes to us and wants to show us how we are alone, and God is not with us, that’s the enemy. I pray sister that you will feel Him lifting you up. He is your Jehovah Jireh. He is enough. He is enough sister. He is enough and He will pull you through whatever it is that you are going through whatever it is that you’re struggling with. He knows, He sees, He feels, and He will pull you up sister. Do not give up. Do not give in. Keep pressing on even if it means crawling. Do it. Keep pressing on. God loves you very much. God loves you sister. I felt you because I’ve been there. I’ve been there. I’ve been there. And the name of Jesus. Amen.

Hi this is Daddy’s Girl from Wichita KS April the 5th. I was listening to the Community Prayer on April the second when I heard a heart crying out saying I’m not OK I’m not OK. It was a woman whose mother died in 2013. She said her mother had been sick for a while and she had a chance to be alone with her. She whispered in her ear and said it’s OK go, be with Jesus, that she and her siblings would be OK. And shortly after that her mother died. She said after that she has not been OK since. She needs her mom. As my husband and I were listening to her story I asked the Lord what should I do for her. This is what came to me. Just hold her in the spirit as a mother would. Just hold her close in my arms and rock her and pat her on her back and say you are OK, you are OK. It’s going to be OK. Whisper in her ear it is OK to live. Your mom is OK and she wants you to live and be happy. Don’t worry about her. It took a lot of courage to let your mom go to Jesus. She knew you would be OK. The devil has been telling you all these years that you were wrong to let her go. No. You did the right thing. Weeping endures for a night but joy comes in the morning. Let go and let God bring you into His joy. Your mom is OK. So, when you start to see and feel better and know you’re OK your relationship with your daughter will get better and will become OK. God bless you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Hello this is Jeff from Canada I am part of a DAB family but I’m also part of the DAB Kids family. My two sons and I listen every single night to Ezekiel and whoever attends, and I just want to tell you community if you are…if you have children and you are not going through the…the new testament in a year with Ezekiel you need to do it. He’s doing a great job. It’s actually been very fantastic for us. We’ve been been able to learn a lot about the scriptures and talk and pray about that. Wanted to first of all play pray for Annie. It’s April the 6th and you said you’re part of the DAB Kids and your brother had a fight with your mom and had left. And we’re just praying for your brother that he will come home and God would touch his heart in Jesus’ name. And just wanted to say thank you Ezekiel. You’re doing an amazing job and we’re super excited to do our nightly devotions in reading the word of God with you and your family. God bless.

Hey siblings it’s your little sis His little Cherry in Canada. Beloved in Boston soon to be beloved in… I am praying for you. I heard your message how your family is calling feeling caught to moved thousands of miles away from your people and your church. It’s really difficult for you. Your three middle school girls are having real trouble with it, especially your daughter Emma who’s finishing grade eight. Wow. It’s like a flashback because I was Emma and I want…I want you to know that when at the end of grade eight my parents told us that we were moving from the big city to the middle of nowhere to pastor a little country church I simply refused to go. I was not going to leave my middle school science teacher who I was desperately in love with and destined to marry someday to go to the middle of nowhere. And I told my parents I hated them. I did everything that I could do to make them miserable. But you know what happened? They prayed and God did a miracle in my heart. And it may have involved a really cute guy in this little town in the middle of nowhere but that’s beside the point. I decided that I was willing to go after all and once I went, I loved the little town. I loved rural life and I flourished, and I blossomed there like I can’t describe to you. And today I’m so close with my parents. Honestly, I love them dearly and I go see them as often as I can. I just want to encourage you that you follow God’s leading wherever it leads you and He will deal with your daughters and with their hearts and with their destinies and He will do miracles in them and in your family. I love you I’m praying for you.

Good morning this is Mandy calling from Cork in Ireland and this is a shout out to God chosen in Georgia. She rang in requesting prayer because she’s in a dark place and needs God’s strength to carry on. Father God, we lift up our sister God’s Chosen in Georgia and ask that You would give her strength and give her the will to carry on. Amen.
