Deuteronomy 28

Blessings for Obedience

28 “Now(A) if you faithfully obey the Lord your God(B) and are careful to follow all his commands I am giving you today,(C) the Lord your God will put you far above all the nations of the earth.(D) All these blessings will come and overtake(E) you, because you obey the Lord your God:

You will be blessed in the city
and blessed in the country.(F)
Your offspring[a] will be blessed,
and your land’s produce,
and the offspring of your livestock,
including the young of your herds
and the newborn of your flocks.(G)
Your basket and kneading bowl will be blessed.
You will be blessed when you come in
and blessed when you go out.(H)

“The Lord will cause the enemies who rise up against you to be defeated before you. They will march out against you from one direction but flee from you in seven directions. The Lord will grant you a blessing on your barns and on everything you do;[b](I) he will bless you in the land the Lord your God is giving you.(J) The Lord will establish you as his holy people,(K) as he swore to you, if you obey the commands of the Lord your God and walk in his ways. 10 Then all the peoples of the earth will see that you bear the Lord’s name,(L) and they will stand in awe of you.(M) 11 The Lord will make you prosper abundantly with offspring,[c] the offspring of your livestock, and your land’s produce in the land the Lord swore to your ancestors to give you. 12 The Lord will open for you his abundant storehouse,(N) the sky, to give your land rain in its season and to bless all the work of your hands.(O) You will lend to many nations, but you will not borrow. 13 The Lord will make you the head and not the tail;(P) you will only move upward and never downward if you listen to the Lord your God’s commands I am giving you today and are careful to follow them. 14 Do not turn aside to the right or the left from all the things I am commanding you today,(Q) and do not follow other gods to worship them.

Curses for Disobedience

15 “But if you do not obey the Lord your God by carefully following all his commands and statutes I am giving you today, all these curses will come and overtake(R) you:(S)

16 You will be cursed in the city
and cursed in the country.
17 Your basket and kneading bowl will be cursed.
18 Your offspring will be cursed,
and your land’s produce,
the young of your herds,
and the newborn of your flocks.
19 You will be cursed when you come in
and cursed when you go out.

20 The Lord will send against you curses, confusion,(T) and rebuke in everything you do until you are destroyed and quickly perish,(U) because of the wickedness of your actions in abandoning me.(V) 21 The Lord will make pestilence cling to you until he has exterminated you from the land you are entering to possess.(W) 22 The Lord will afflict you with wasting disease, fever, inflammation, burning heat, drought,[d] blight, and mildew;(X) these will pursue you until you perish. 23 The sky above you will be bronze, and the earth beneath you iron. 24 The Lord will turn the rain of your land into falling[e] dust; it will descend on you from the sky until you are destroyed. 25 The Lord will cause you to be defeated before your enemies. You will march out against them from one direction but flee from them in seven directions.(Y) You will be an object of horror(Z) to all the kingdoms of the earth. 26 Your corpses will be food for all the birds of the sky and the wild animals of the earth, with no one to scare them away.(AA)

27 “The Lord will afflict you with the boils of Egypt,(AB) tumors, a festering rash, and scabies, from which you cannot be cured. 28 The Lord will afflict you with madness, blindness, and mental confusion,(AC) 29 so that at noon you will grope as a blind person gropes in the dark.(AD) You will not be successful in anything you do. You will only be oppressed and robbed continually, and no one will help you.(AE) 30 You will become engaged to a woman, but another man will rape her. You will build a house but not live in it.(AF) You will plant a vineyard but not enjoy its fruit. 31 Your ox will be slaughtered before your eyes, but you will not eat any of it. Your donkey will be taken away from you and not returned to you. Your flock will be given to your enemies, and no one will help you. 32 Your sons and daughters will be given to another people, while your eyes grow weary looking for them every day. But you will be powerless to do anything.(AG) 33 A people you don’t know will eat your land’s produce and everything you have labored for. You will only be oppressed and crushed continually.(AH) 34 You will be driven mad by what you see. 35 The Lord will afflict you with painful and incurable boils on your knees and thighs—from the sole of your foot to the top of your head.(AI)

36 “The Lord will bring you and your king that you have appointed to a nation neither you nor your ancestors have known, and there you will worship other gods, of wood and stone.(AJ) 37 You will become an object of horror, scorn, and ridicule among all the peoples where the Lord will drive you.(AK)

38 “You will sow much seed in the field but harvest little, because locusts will devour it. 39 You will plant and cultivate vineyards but not drink the wine or gather the grapes, because worms will eat them. 40 You will have olive trees throughout your territory but not moisten your skin with oil, because your olives will drop off. 41 You will father sons and daughters, but they will not remain yours, because they will be taken prisoner. 42 Buzzing insects will take possession of all your trees and your land’s produce. 43 The resident alien among you will rise higher and higher above you, while you sink lower and lower. 44 He will lend to you, but you won’t lend to him. He will be the head, and you will be the tail.

45 “All these curses will come, pursue, and overtake you until you are destroyed, since you did not obey the Lord your God and keep the commands and statutes he gave you. 46 These curses will be a sign and a wonder(AL) against you and your descendants forever. 47 Because you didn’t serve the Lord your God with joy and a cheerful heart,(AM) even though you had an abundance of everything, 48 you will serve your enemies that the Lord will send against you, in famine, thirst, nakedness, and a lack of everything. He will place an iron yoke(AN) on your neck until he has destroyed you. 49 The Lord will bring a nation from far away, from the ends of the earth,(AO) to swoop down on you like an eagle,(AP) a nation whose language you won’t understand,(AQ) 50 a ruthless nation, showing no respect for the old and not sparing the young. 51 They will eat the offspring of your livestock and your land’s produce until you are destroyed. They will leave you no grain, new wine, fresh oil, young of your herds, or newborn of your flocks until they cause you to perish. 52 They will besiege you within all your city gates until your high and fortified walls, that you trust in, come down throughout your land. They will besiege you within all your city gates throughout the land the Lord your God has given you.

53 “You will eat your offspring,[f] the flesh of your sons and daughters the Lord your God has given you(AR) during the siege and hardship your enemy imposes on you. 54 The most sensitive and refined man among you will look grudgingly at his brother, the wife he embraces, and the rest of his children, 55 refusing to share with any of them his children’s flesh that he will eat because he has nothing left during the siege and hardship your enemy imposes on you in all your towns. 56 The most sensitive and refined woman among you, who would not venture to set the sole of her foot on the ground because of her refinement and sensitivity, will begrudge the husband she embraces, her son, and her daughter, 57 the afterbirth that comes out from between her legs and the children she bears, because she will secretly eat them for lack of anything else during the siege and hardship your enemy imposes on you within your city gates.

58 “If you are not careful to obey all the words of this law, which are written in this scroll, by fearing this glorious and awe-inspiring name—the Lord, your God— 59 he will bring wondrous plagues on you and your descendants, severe and lasting plagues, and terrible and chronic sicknesses. 60 He will afflict you again with all the diseases of Egypt,(AS) which you dreaded, and they will cling to you. 61 The Lord will also afflict you with every sickness and plague not recorded in the book of this law, until you are destroyed. 62 Though you were as numerous as the stars of the sky, you will be left with only a few people, because you did not obey the Lord your God. 63 Just as the Lord was glad to cause you to prosper and to multiply you, so he will also be glad to cause you to perish and to destroy you. You will be ripped out of the land you are entering to possess. 64 Then the Lord will scatter you among all peoples from one end of the earth to the other,(AT) and there you will worship other gods, of wood and stone,(AU) which neither you nor your ancestors have known.(AV) 65 You will find no peace among those nations, and there will be no resting place(AW) for the sole of your foot. There the Lord will give you a trembling heart, failing eyes, and a despondent spirit. 66 Your life will hang in doubt before you. You will be in dread night and day, never certain of survival. 67 In the morning you will say, ‘If only it were evening!’ and in the evening you will say, ‘If only it were morning!’—because of the dread you will have in your heart and because of what you will see. 68 The Lord will take you back in ships to Egypt by a route that I said you would never see again.(AX) There you will sell yourselves to your enemies as male and female slaves, but no one will buy you.”

Luke 11:14-36

A House Divided

14 Now(A) he was driving out a demon(B) that was mute.(C) When the demon came out, the man who had been mute spoke, and the crowds were amazed. 15 But some of them said, “He drives out demons by Beelzebul,(D) the ruler(E) of the demons.”(F) 16 And others, as a test,(G) were demanding of him a sign(H) from heaven.

17 Knowing their thoughts,(I) he told them, “Every kingdom divided(J) against itself is headed for destruction, and a house divided against itself falls. 18 If Satan(K) also is divided against himself, how will his kingdom(L) stand? For you say I drive out demons by Beelzebul. 19 And if I drive out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your sons(M) drive them out? For this reason they will be your judges. 20 If I drive out demons by the finger of God,(N) then the kingdom of God(O) has come upon you. 21 When a strong man, fully armed, guards his estate, his possessions are secure. 22 But when one stronger than he attacks and overpowers(P) him, he takes from him all his weapons[a](Q) he trusted(R) in, and divides up his plunder.(S) 23 Anyone who is not with me is against me,(T) and anyone who does not gather with me scatters.

An Unclean Spirit’s Return

24 “When(U) an unclean spirit(V) comes out of a person, it roams through waterless places looking for rest,(W) and not finding rest, it then[b] says, ‘I’ll go back to my house that I came from.’ 25 Returning, it finds the house swept and put in order. 26 Then it goes and brings seven other spirits(X) more evil than itself, and they enter and settle down there. As a result, that person’s last condition is worse than the first.”(Y)

True Blessedness

27 As he was saying these things, a woman from the crowd(Z) raised her voice and said to him, “Blessed is the womb that bore you and the one who nursed you!” (AA)

28 He said, “Rather, blessed are those who hear the word of God(AB) and keep it.”(AC)

The Sign of Jonah

29 As the crowds were increasing, he began saying, “This generation(AD) is an evil generation.(AE) It demands a sign,(AF) but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.[c](AG) 30 For just as Jonah became a sign to the people of Nineveh, so also the Son of Man(AH) will be to this generation. 31 The queen of the south(AI) will rise up at the judgment(AJ) with the men of this generation and condemn(AK) them, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon,(AL) and look—something greater than Solomon is here. 32 The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, because they repented at Jonah’s preaching, and look—something greater than Jonah is here.

The Lamp of the Body

33 “No(AM) one lights a lamp(AN) and puts it in the cellar or under a basket,[d] but on a lampstand, so that those who come in may see its light. 34 Your eye is the lamp of the body.(AO) When your eye is healthy, your whole body is also full of light. But when it is bad,(AP) your body is also full of darkness. 35 Take care, then, that the light in you is not darkness. 36 If, therefore, your whole body is full of light, with no part of it in darkness, it will be entirely illuminated, as when a lamp shines its light on you.”

Psalm 77

Psalm 77

Confidence in a Time of Crisis

For the choir director: according to Jeduthun. Of Asaph.(A) A psalm.

I cry aloud to God,
aloud to God, and he will hear me.(B)
I sought the Lord in my day of trouble.
My hands were continually lifted up
all night long;
I refused to be comforted.(C)
I think of God; I groan;
I meditate; my spirit becomes weak.(D)Selah

You have kept me from closing my eyes;
I am troubled and cannot speak.(E)
I consider days of old,
years long past.(F)
At night I remember my music;
I meditate in my heart, and my spirit ponders.(G)

“Will the Lord reject forever
and never again show favor?(H)
Has his faithful love ceased forever?
Is his promise at an end for all generations?(I)
Has God forgotten to be gracious?
Has he in anger withheld his compassion?” (J)Selah

10 So I say, “I am grieved
that the right hand of the Most High has changed.”[a](K)
11 I will remember the Lord’s works;
yes, I will remember your ancient wonders.(L)
12 I will reflect on all you have done
and meditate on your actions.(M)

13 God, your way is holy.
What god is great like God?(N)
14 You are the God who works wonders;
you revealed your strength among the peoples.(O)
15 With power you redeemed your people,
the descendants of Jacob and Joseph.(P)Selah

16 The water saw you, God.
The water saw you; it trembled.
Even the depths shook.(Q)
17 The clouds poured down water.
The storm clouds thundered;
your arrows flashed back and forth.(R)
18 The sound of your thunder was in the whirlwind;
lightning lit up the world.(S)
The earth shook and quaked.(T)
19 Your way went through the sea
and your path through the vast water,
but your footprints were unseen.(U)
20 You led your people like a flock(V)
by the hand of Moses and Aaron.(W)

Deuteronomy 26:1-27:26, Luke 10:38-11:13, Psalms 76:1-12, Proverbs 12:15-17

Today is the 4th day of April welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I’m Brian it’s great to be here with you today as we move forward in our journey through the Bible. This week we are reading from the Christian Standard Bible and continuing the journey through the book of Deuteronomy. Today we will read chapters 26 and 27.

Commentary:

Okay. So, in the gospel of Luke today we encounter a really famous scene or passage. Although it’s very very short, thousands of sermons have been spoken about this passage and it’s the passage that contains Mary and Martha, the sisters. The reason that this is such a popular passage to teach from is that it gives this contrast in response to the presence of Jesus. So, it’s Martha who welcomed Jesus into her home. And between the time that Jesus comes into her home and the time that she gets exasperated enough to come to Jesus and ask Jesus to ask her sister to get up and help her she’s been doing what she thought was expected of her, what she thought she’s supposed to do, to be a good hostess, to be busy, to be working, to be surveying. And while Martha is busy and working and serving her sister Mary’s not. Her sister Mary is hanging on every word that comes at a Jesus mouth or to put it more accurately, “she was sitting at the Lord’s feet and was listening to what he said.” Martha can’t do that. She’s busy doing what she’s doing, preparing a meal, preparing some snacks, repairing some drinks, doing whatever she’s doing. She’s busy doing it and she seems upset that her sister isn’t also up doing it with her. So, we have the contrast. Martha’s busy, Mary’s busy listening to Jesus. What makes this such a compelling story is how easy it is for it to become the mirror into our own souls. It is very easy to get on the faith treadmill. It is very easy to believe that the faster we can go the more that we can get done, the harder we can charge the more people that can be convinced. The harder that we can work for God the closer we are to God. In other words, activity, or work on behalf or for God equals a relationship with God. Ironically, that isn’t how any other relationship that we know of works. And I’m not talking about working relationships where we have an employment contract, and we are supposed to do this and we’re supposed to do that and that’s what it's…it's…is expected. I’m talking about actual relationships with people are not formed by our activity on their behalf alone. I am a married man. I love my wife, Jill, very, very, very, very much and I tried to do all kinds of work that will make her life good and all kinds of responsibilities that I just have as the husband of my house. And she has the same thing going on, things that she has to do that are in my…in my favor on my behalf and things that just need to be done because we have a household. I may notice that she is working extra hard in a certain direction, and I may commend her for that, or I may not even notice. I don’t need her to be exhausted on my behalf in order to feel loved by her and vice versa. I don’t have to exhaust myself continually upping the ante and keeping on being busy so that she can feel loved. I don’t want to oversimplify this. The work that we do for each other is appreciated. Like everybody who’s married…like we know this stuff, like it’s appreciated, but that isn’t a single signifier that you are so busy on my behalf that you love me. And yet so often that is what we are told the relationship with God looks like. The more we can do for God the closer we are to God. But we can do all kinds of work on behalf of someone that we will never meet. And, so, Jesus gives the proper context here. Martha goes to Jesus, asks Jesus to get Mary off her behind and helping her, and Jesus respond, “Martha, Martha”, and we could put our own name in there, friends. “Martha, Martha, you are worried and upset about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has made the right choice and it will not be taken away from her. So, friends, yeah, it’s true. We’re human beings. We’re worried and upset about many things on any given day at any given moment. We find things if we don’t have something. We just are prone to being moved forward by activity because of anxiety or because of other…some other kind of negative impulse. Mary’s not exhibiting that, that franticness. She’s just listening to Jesus and Jesus is basically saying look, the worry, the being upset about many things, it’s not necessary. Can we like stop there for a second? It’s not necessary to get close to God, to be worried and upset about many things. One thing is necessary, and Mary was doing the one thing, sitting at Jesus feet and listening to what He said, which is not an excuse for ignoring our chores. It’s the posture of our heart. Are we frantic? Are we worried and upset about many things, and that is what is driving us forward and trying to get closer to God when we find God in the exhale of it all? When we realize that the worry and upset is not necessary for what we are after is kind of a game changer. And, so, let’s think about it today. To be in a relationship with God, to be in a place of peace, of shalom, to be in a place of learning of open heartedness to the words of Jesus does not require being worried and upset about many things. So, we’re here in our little oasis that we create for ourselves every day around this Global Campfire. And many, many times we talk about leaving…leaving what we’re dragging and just giving ourselves a minute here of serenity, a moment to allow the Scriptures to speak to us, a moment to catch our breaths and then we can leave the Global Campfire and grab all of those anxieties and worries and throw them back over our shoulder get back to our day if that’s what we want to do. What if we began to realize that that’s not necessary? It’s possible we can do it. We certainly can keep it up. We can carry these things but it’s not necessary. What does that do to the rest of our day? What if we put it into practice just today and not pick all that stuff up when we leave this Global Campfire, this little oasis that we have together? What if we don’t take those things up because they’re not necessary? What we do the thing that is necessary, to be in the presence of Jesus at peace hanging on His every word? Sounds like a much better day.

Prayer:

Holy Spirit come into that. There’s plenty of things going on. There’s lots that we have to get to and there’s plenty that can bring up anxiety or upset or worry or any kind of negative emotions that we experience. There’s plenty. And yet in your presence being with you allows us to look at these things as they are. They are not giant monsters. They are situations to be dealt with and you know it all and you can show us how to navigate. And, so, Holy Spirit, we humble ourselves before you acknowledging that we need to now more than ever, that we will never not need you. We humble ourselves before you and ask that you…that you lead us into all truth. And we pray this in the precious name of Jesus. Amen.

dailyaudiobible.com is home, home in the Global Campfire, home of everything. And, so, check it out. That’s where you find out what’s going on around here. If you’re using the app, which you can get the Daily Audio Bible app from whatever app store is connected to your smart device. And, so, check that out. But if you’re using the app you can push the Drawer icon in the upper left-hand corner and that’ll open up a drawer and you’ll find things like the Community section within that drawer or on the web at…up at the top.

In the community section are places to get connected on social media, but it’s also where the Prayer Wall is. And yes we are people of the Scriptures and that’s why we come around the Global Campfire every day, but we also end up falling in love with each other and praying for one another and being a community together as we take this journey. And, so, praying for one another is a beautiful thing that is so distinctive about the community here and the Prayer Wall is a place to do that. That’s in the Community section. So, you go to the Prayer Wall and just pray for your brothers and sisters, just kind of read what’s going on and pray for them and respond to them. Let them know you’re praying for them. Or maybe you’re just enduring right now and it’s just nothing but hardship in front of you and it’s crushing you and it’s hard to carry. Maybe you don’t have to do that alone. Maybe you can share some your story and others can pray for you and send encouragement your way. That’s the beauty of the prayer wall. And, so, certainly check that out. It’s in the Community section, whether on the web or in the app.

If you want to partner with the Daily Audio Bible, if the mission to bring the spoken word of God read fresh every day offered freely to anyone who will listen anywhere on this planet any time of day or night, and to build community around that rhythm so that no one has to feel alone, if that’s life-giving and meaningful to you then thank you for your partnership. Deuteronomy 26-27

Giving the Firstfruits

26 “When you enter the land the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance,(A) and you take possession of it and live in it, take some of the first of all the land’s produce that you harvest from the land the Lord your God is giving you and put it in a basket. Then go to the place where the Lord your God chooses to have his name dwell.(B) When you come before the priest who is serving at that time, say to him, ‘Today I declare to the Lord your[a] God that I have entered the land the Lord swore to our ancestors to give us.’

“Then the priest will take the basket from you and place it before the altar of the Lord your God. You are to respond by saying in the presence of the Lord your God:

My father was a wandering Aramean.(C) He went down to Egypt with a few people and resided there as an alien.(D) There he became a great, powerful, and populous nation. But the Egyptians mistreated and oppressed us, and forced us to do hard labor. So we called out to the Lord, the God of our ancestors, and the Lord heard our cry and saw our misery, hardship, and oppression.(E) Then the Lord brought us out of Egypt with a strong hand and an outstretched arm, with terrifying power, and with signs and wonders. He led us to this place and gave us this land, a land flowing with milk and honey.(F) 10 I have now brought the first of the land’s produce that you, Lord, have given me.

You will then place the container before the Lord your God and bow down to him. 11 You, the Levites, and the resident aliens among you will rejoice(G) in all the good things the Lord your God has given you and your household.

The Tenth in the Third Year

12 “When you have finished paying all the tenth of your produce in the third year,(H) the year of the tenth, you are to give it to the Levites, resident aliens, fatherless children, and widows, so that they may eat in your towns and be satisfied. 13 Then you will say in the presence of the Lord your God:

I have taken the consecrated portion out of my house; I have also given it to the Levites, resident aliens, fatherless children, and widows, according to all the commands you gave me. I have not violated or forgotten your commands. 14 I have not eaten any of it while in mourning, or removed any of it while unclean, or offered any of it for the dead.(I) I have obeyed the Lord my God; I have done all you commanded me. 15 Look down from your holy dwelling, from heaven, and bless your people Israel and the land you have given us as you swore to our ancestors, a land flowing with milk and honey.

Covenant Summary

16 “The Lord your God is commanding you this day to follow these statutes and ordinances. Follow them carefully with all your heart and all your soul. 17 Today you have affirmed that the Lord is your God and that you will walk in his ways, keep his statutes, commands, and ordinances, and obey him. 18 And today the Lord has affirmed that you are his own possession as he promised you, that you are to keep all his commands, 19 that he will elevate you to praise, fame, and glory above all the nations he has made, and that you will be a holy people(J) to the Lord your God as he promised.”

The Law Written on Stones

27 Moses and the elders of Israel commanded the people, “Keep every command I am giving you today. When you cross the Jordan into the land the Lord your God is giving you, set up large stones and cover them with plaster.(K) Write all the words of this law on the stones after you cross to enter the land the Lord your God is giving you, a land flowing with milk and honey,(L) as the Lord, the God of your ancestors, has promised you. When you have crossed the Jordan, you are to set up these stones on Mount Ebal, as I am commanding you today, and you are to cover them with plaster. Build an altar of stones there to the Lord your God—do not use any iron tool on them.(M) Use uncut stones to build the altar of the Lord your God and offer burnt offerings to the Lord your God on it. There you are to sacrifice fellowship offerings, eat, and rejoice in the presence of the Lord your God. Write clearly all the words of this law on the plastered stones.”

The Covenant Curses

Moses and the Levitical priests spoke to all Israel, “Be silent, Israel, and listen! This day you have become the people of the Lord your God. 10 Obey the Lord your God and follow his commands and statutes I am giving you today.”

11 On that day Moses commanded the people, 12 “When you have crossed the Jordan, these tribes will stand on Mount Gerizim to bless the people: Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Joseph, and Benjamin. 13 And these tribes will stand on Mount Ebal to deliver the curse: Reuben, Gad, Asher, Zebulun, Dan, and Naphtali.(N) 14 The Levites will proclaim in a loud voice to every Israelite:

15 ‘The person who makes a carved idol or cast image, which is detestable to the Lord, the work of a craftsman, and sets it up in secret is cursed.’

And all the people will reply, ‘Amen!’

16 ‘The one who dishonors his father or mother is cursed.’

And all the people will say, ‘Amen!’

17 ‘The one who moves his neighbor’s boundary marker is cursed.’

And all the people will say, ‘Amen!’

18 ‘The one who leads a blind person astray on the road is cursed.’

And all the people will say, ‘Amen!’

19 ‘The one who denies justice to a resident alien, a fatherless child, or a widow is cursed.’

And all the people will say, ‘Amen!’

20 ‘The one who sleeps with his father’s wife is cursed, for he has violated his father’s marriage bed.’[b]

And all the people will say, ‘Amen!’

21 ‘The one who has sexual intercourse with any animal is cursed.’

And all the people will say, ‘Amen!’

22 ‘The one who sleeps with his sister, whether his father’s daughter or his mother’s daughter is cursed.’

And all the people will say, ‘Amen!’

23 ‘The one who sleeps with his mother-in-law is cursed.’

And all the people will say, ‘Amen!’

24 ‘The one who secretly kills his neighbor is cursed.’

And all the people will say, ‘Amen!’

25 ‘The one who accepts a bribe to kill an innocent person is cursed.’

And all the people will say, ‘Amen!’

26 ‘Anyone who does not put the words of this law into practice is cursed.’

And all the people will say, ‘Amen!’

Luke 10:38-11:13

Martha and Mary

38 While they were traveling, he entered a village, and a woman named Martha(A) welcomed him into her home.[a] 39 She had a sister named Mary, who also sat at the Lord’s[b] feet(B) and was listening to what he said.[c] 40 But Martha was distracted by her many tasks, and she came up and asked, “Lord, don’t you care(C) that my sister has left me to serve alone? So tell her to give me a hand.”[d](D)

41 The Lord[e] answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and upset about many things,(E) 42 but one thing is necessary.[f](F) Mary has made the right choice,[g] and it will not be taken away from her.”

The Lord’s Prayer

11 He was praying(G) in a certain place, and when he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John also taught his disciples.”(H)

He said to them, “Whenever you pray, say,(I)

Father,[h](J)
your name(K) be honored as holy.(L)
Your kingdom come.[i](M)
Give us each day our daily bread.[j](N)
And forgive us our sins,(O)
for we ourselves also forgive everyone
in debt to us.[k](P)
And do not bring us into temptation.”[l](Q)

Ask, Search, Knock

He also said to them, “Suppose one of you[m] has a friend and goes to him at midnight and says to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves of bread, because a friend of mine on a journey has come to me, and I don’t have anything to offer him.’ Then he will answer from inside and say, ‘Don’t bother me! The door is already locked, and my children and I have gone to bed. I can’t get up to give you anything.’ I tell you, even though he won’t get up and give him anything because he is his friend, yet because of his friend’s shameless boldness,[n] he will get up and give him as much as he needs.(R)

“So(S) I say to you, ask,(T) and it will be given to you. Seek,(U) and you will find. Knock,(V) and the door will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. 11 What father among you, if his son[o] asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead of a fish? 12 Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? 13 If you then, who are evil,(W) know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father(X) give the Holy Spirit(Y) to those who ask him?”

Deuteronomy 23:1-25:19, Luke 10:13-37, Psalm 75:1-10, Proverbs 12:12-14

Today is the 3rd day of April, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian. It is great to be here with you today as we greet with open hearts, a brand-new shiny sparkly week. This be the first time we do this in the month of April. This is the first full week of the month of April and it is a joy and a privilege and an honor to be here with you today, as we gather around the Global Campfire. Find a place, exhale and take the next step forward together and this week we will read from the Christian Standard Bible, and of course will pick up where we left off yesterday and that will lead us back into the book of Deuteronomy today, we will read chapters 23, 24 and 25.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word. We thank You for this brand-new shiny week, that we are moving into. As we move into this brand-new shiny month. And so, Holy Spirit, we humble ourselves before You and consecrate this month to You. It’s time that we be doers and not just hearers alone. And we thank You that we can hear and we thank You that it can shift things inside of us but we must also live into the things that You are exposing within us. And so, come Holy Spirit in this brand-new month. And may it be a month as transition even as the seasons change, may our seasons change from within. We pray this in the precious name of Jesus. Amen.

Prayer and Encouragements:

Calm, calm the rage in me like You calmed the raging sea. Just the sound of your voice, changes everything. How will we still, how will we end, how will we still. Open my ears to hear, open my eyes to see. Open my heart to receive all of you, for all of me.

Hello, Daily Audio Bible family, my name is Robbie. I’m from the Nirule, Canada. And this is my first prayer request. I began listening to the Daily Audio Bible about three or four days ago thanks to my dear friend in the faith and brother in Christ Jeremy, thank you Jeremy. The church I’m going to right now, the mission statement is to know Him, that He be known and that’s my prayer request that I want to know Jesus so that He is known, through me. I want to know how to contribute with whatever gifts I may have and I want to hear His voice. Jesus said my sheep hear my voice and I still, even after five years and I was actually raised in the Catholic Church so, I guess you could say my whole life but I, at a Baptist Church became born again. I’ve been baptized as an adult and so I would just really love to know the voice, my Lord and Savior. I think I need to know Him so that He will be known, that’s my prayer. Thank you, God Bless You.

Good morning Daily Audio Bible Community. This is Diane Olive Brown and Jeff, my husband. And it is about 1am on Thursday March 31st, I believe, 2022 Central time. Shalom, shalom, that’s Jewish for nothing is missing, nothing is broken. I’m reaching out to a guy who said that, called himself a misfit and spoke of how his journey has been different from everybody else as he’s tried this, tried Wickin, tried Conservative Christians. And mentioned how they made him hate himself. I just wanted to reach out to you and say that the Bible says that the love of God leads us into repentance. And I can vouch for that and I can say I’ve been in love with Jesus from the time I was two years old. But I’ve also failed Him mightily. And sinned greatly. And I’m gonna be praying for you. And I don’t want you to call yourself a misfit but reach out, reach out to Jesus. His love, His love will reach out to you. Give Him time and His word. Continue to read and listen to the Daily Audio Bible and the commentary and this group, this group of Christians.

Hey everybody, this is Addicted to Christ in Alabama, making a call. I’ve been listening for a few months again, now. I’ve been listening for 15 years, not solid, off and on, I go for long spurts and listen and then you know, go for short times where I would, I would allow drugs or really just it was always drugs or some form of stupidity like that would get me wrapped up and try to kill me but I’ll tell you what, there is someone who called today, this is Thursday the 31st and Spiritual Misfit is what I’m gonna call you. You didn’t give us your name but you called and you said that your church uses the Bible to make you hate yourself, I think is how you put or make you feel like you’re not good. I forgot exactly how you said it but man, I connected with you Spiritual Misfit. You said that you didn’t fit neatly into the Christian category. The Christian category isn’t neat. None of us fit neatly into it. If you look at the disciples, they were all misfits, that we all knuckleheads. He didn’t come for the perfect ones, He didn’t come for the ones that fit neatly into any category. He was the one that didn’t fit into a category, He broke the categories, He came for us. He came for the wild ones. He is wild at heart and man I connected with your call. I’m praying for you. It sounds like we need to find you a new church. I’m just saying, churches are hard for me man. Nondenominational, Jesus never said anything about four walls and a door, you know. He said we are the church.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Sunday April 3, 2022 (NIV)

Deuteronomy 23-25

Exclusion and Inclusion

23 “No man whose testicles have been crushed or whose penis has been cut off may enter the Lord’s assembly. No one of illegitimate birth may enter the Lord’s assembly; none of his descendants, even to the tenth generation, may enter the Lord’s assembly. No Ammonite or Moabite may enter the Lord’s assembly;(A) none of their descendants, even to the tenth generation, may ever enter the Lord’s assembly. This is because they did not meet you with food and water on the journey after you came out of Egypt, and because Balaam son of Beor from Pethor in Aram-naharaim was hired to curse you.(B) Yet the Lord your God would not listen to Balaam, but he turned the curse into a blessing for you because the Lord your God loves(C) you.(D) Never pursue their welfare or prosperity as long as you live. Do not despise an Edomite, because he is your brother. Do not despise an Egyptian, because you were a resident alien in his land. The children born to them in the third generation may enter the Lord’s assembly.

Cleanliness of the Camp

“When you are encamped against your enemies, be careful to avoid anything offensive. 10 If there is a man among you who is unclean because of a bodily emission during the night, he must go outside the camp; he may not come anywhere inside the camp. 11 When evening approaches, he is to wash with water, and when the sun sets he may come inside the camp.(E) 12 You are to have a place outside the camp and go there to relieve yourself. 13 You are to have a digging tool in your equipment; when you relieve yourself, dig a hole with it and cover up your excrement. 14 For the Lord your God walks throughout your camp to protect you and deliver your enemies to you; so your encampments must be holy. He must not see anything indecent among you or he will turn away from you.

Fugitive Slaves

15 “Do not return a slave to his master when he has escaped from his master to you. 16 Let him live among you wherever he wants within your city gates. Do not mistreat him.

Cult Prostitution Forbidden

17 “No Israelite woman is to be a cult prostitute, and no Israelite man is to be a cult prostitute. 18 Do not bring a female prostitute’s wages or a male prostitute’s[a] earnings into the house of the Lord your God to fulfill any vow, because both are detestable to the Lord your God.

Interest on Loans

19 “Do not charge your brother interest on silver, food, or anything that can earn interest. 20 You may charge a foreigner interest, but you must not charge your brother Israelite interest, so that the Lord your God may bless you in everything you do[b] in the land you are entering to possess.(F)

Keeping Vows

21 “If you make a vow to the Lord your God, do not be slow to keep it, because he will require it of you, and it will be counted against you as sin. 22 But if you refrain from making a vow, it will not be counted against you as sin. 23 Be careful to do whatever comes from your lips, because you have freely vowed what you promised to the Lord your God.(G)

Neighbor’s Crops

24 “When you enter your neighbor’s vineyard, you may eat as many grapes as you want until you are full, but do not put any in your container. 25 When you enter your neighbor’s standing grain, you may pluck heads of grain with your hand, but do not put a sickle to your neighbor’s grain.

Marriage and Divorce Laws

24 “If a man marries a woman, but she becomes displeasing to him because he finds something indecent about her, he may write her a divorce certificate, hand it to her, and send her away from his house.(H) If after leaving his house she goes and becomes another man’s wife, and the second man hates her, writes her a divorce certificate, hands it to her, and sends her away from his house or if he dies, the first husband who sent her away may not marry her again after she has been defiled, because that would be detestable to the Lord. You must not bring guilt on the land the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance.(I)

“When a man takes a bride, he must not go out with the army or be liable for any duty. He is free to stay at home for one year, so that he can bring joy to the wife he has married.

Safeguarding Life

“Do not take a pair of grindstones or even the upper millstone as security for a debt, because that is like taking a life as security.

“If a man is discovered kidnapping(J) one of his Israelite brothers, whether he treats him as a slave or sells him, the kidnapper must die. You must purge the evil from you.

“Be careful with a person who has a case of serious skin disease, following carefully everything the Levitical priests instruct you to do. Be careful to do as I have commanded them. Remember what the Lord your God did to Miriam on the journey after you left Egypt.(K)

Consideration for People in Need

10 “When you make a loan of any kind to your neighbor, do not enter his house to collect what he offers as security. 11 Stand outside while the man you are making the loan to brings the security out to you. 12 If he is a poor man, do not sleep with the garment he has given as security. 13 Be sure to return it[c] to him at sunset. Then he will sleep in it and bless you, and this will be counted as righteousness to you before the Lord your God.(L)

14 “Do not oppress a hired worker who is poor and needy, whether one of your Israelite brothers or one of the resident aliens in a town[d] in your land. 15 You are to pay him his wages each day before the sun sets, because he is poor and depends on them.(M) Otherwise he will cry out to the Lord against you, and you will be held guilty.

16 “Fathers are not to be put to death for their children, and children are not to be put to death for their fathers; each person will be put to death for his own sin.(N) 17 Do not deny justice to a resident alien or fatherless child, and do not take a widow’s garment as security. 18 Remember that you were a slave in Egypt, and the Lord your God redeemed(O) you from there. Therefore I am commanding you to do this.(P)

19 “When you reap the harvest in your field, and you forget a sheaf in the field, do not go back to get it. It is to be left for the resident alien, the fatherless, and the widow, so that the Lord your God may bless you in all the work of your hands.(Q) 20 When you knock down the fruit from your olive tree, do not go over the branches again. What remains will be for the resident alien, the fatherless, and the widow. 21 When you gather the grapes of your vineyard, do not glean what is left. What remains will be for the resident alien, the fatherless, and the widow. 22 Remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt. Therefore I am commanding you to do this.(R)

Fairness and Mercy

25 “If there is a dispute between men, they are to go to court, and the judges will hear their case. They will clear the innocent and condemn the guilty. If the guilty party deserves to be flogged, the judge will make him lie down and be flogged in his presence with the number of lashes appropriate for his crime. He may be flogged with forty lashes, but no more. Otherwise, if he is flogged with more lashes than these, your brother will be degraded in your sight.

“Do not muzzle an ox while it treads out grain.(S)

Preserving the Family Line

“When brothers live on the same property[e] and one of them dies without a son, the wife of the dead man may not marry a stranger outside the family. Her brother-in-law is to take her as his wife, have sexual relations with her, and perform the duty of a brother-in-law for her. The first son she bears will carry on the name of the dead brother, so his name will not be blotted out from Israel.(T) But if the man doesn’t want to marry his sister-in-law, she is to go to the elders at the city gate(U) and say, ‘My brother-in-law refuses to preserve his brother’s name in Israel. He isn’t willing to perform the duty of a brother-in-law for me.’ The elders of his city will summon him and speak with him. If he persists and says, ‘I don’t want to marry her,’ then his sister-in-law will go up to him in the sight of the elders, remove his sandal from his foot, and spit in his face. Then she will declare, ‘This is what is done to a man who will not build up his brother’s house.’ 10 And his family name in Israel will be ‘The house of the man whose sandal was removed.’(V)

11 “If two men are fighting with each other, and the wife of one steps in to rescue her husband from the one striking him, and she puts out her hand and grabs his genitals, 12 you are to cut off her hand. Do not show pity.

Honest Weights and Measures

13 “Do not have differing weights in your bag, one heavy and one light.(W) 14 Do not have differing dry measures in your house, a larger and a smaller. 15 You must have a full and honest weight, a full and honest dry measure, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you. 16 For everyone who does such things and acts unfairly is detestable to the Lord your God.(X)

Revenge on the Amalekites

17 “Remember what the Amalekites did to you on the journey after you left Egypt.(Y) 18 They met you along the way and attacked all your stragglers from behind when you were tired and weary. They did not fear God. 19 When the Lord your God gives you rest(Z) from all the enemies around you in the land the Lord your God is giving you to possess as an inheritance,(AA) blot out the memory of Amalek under heaven. Do not forget.(AB)

Luke 10:13-37

Unrepentant Towns

13 “Woe(A) to you,(B) Chorazin!(C) Woe to you, Bethsaida!(D) For if the miracles(E) that were done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon,(F) they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes.(G) 14 But it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment(H) than for you. 15 And you, Capernaum,(I) will you be exalted to heaven?(J) No, you will go down to Hades.(K) 16 Whoever listens to you listens to me.(L) Whoever rejects you rejects me.(M) And whoever rejects me rejects the one who sent me.”(N)

The Return of the Seventy-Two

17 The seventy-two[a](O) returned with joy, saying,(P) “Lord, even the demons(Q) submit to us in your name.”(R)

18 He said to them, “I watched Satan(S) fall from heaven like lightning.(T) 19 Look, I have given you the authority(U) to trample(V) on snakes(W) and scorpions(X) and over all the power of the enemy; (Y) nothing at all will harm you.(Z) 20 However, don’t rejoice that[b] the spirits (AA) submit to you,(AB) but rejoice that your names are written(AC) in heaven.”

The Son Reveals the Father

21 At that time(AD) he[c] rejoiced in the Holy[d] Spirit(AE) and said, “I praise[e] you, Father,(AF) Lord of heaven and earth,(AG) because you have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent(AH) and revealed them to infants.(AI) Yes, Father, because this was your good pleasure.[f](AJ) 22 All things have[g] been entrusted to me by my Father. No one knows who the Son is except the Father, and who the Father is except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son desires[h] to reveal him.”(AK)

23 Then turning to his disciples he said privately, “Blessed are the eyes that see the things you see! 24 For I tell you that many prophets and kings wanted to see the things you see but didn’t see them; to hear the things you hear but didn’t hear them.”(AL)

The Parable of the Good Samaritan

25 Then(AM) an expert in the law(AN) stood up to test(AO) him, saying, “Teacher,(AP) what must I do to inherit eternal life?” (AQ)

26 “What is written in the law?” he asked him. “How do you read it?”

27 He answered, “Love the Lord your God(AR) with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind,”(AS) and “your neighbor as yourself.”[i](AT)

28 “You’ve answered correctly,” he told him. “Do this and you will live.”(AU)

29 But wanting to justify himself,(AV) he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” (AW)

30 Jesus took up the question and said, “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho and fell into the hands of robbers. They stripped him, beat him up, and fled, leaving him half dead. 31 A priest happened to be going down that road. When he saw him, he passed by on the other side. 32 In the same way, a Levite, when he arrived at the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a Samaritan(AX) on his journey came up to him, and when he saw the man, he had compassion.(AY) 34 He went over to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on olive oil(AZ) and wine. Then he put him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. 35 The next day[j] he took out two denarii,[k] gave them to the innkeeper, and said, ‘Take care of him. When I come back I’ll reimburse you for whatever extra you spend.’

36 “Which of these three do you think proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of the robbers?”

37 “The one who showed mercy(BA) to him,” he said.

Then Jesus told him, “Go and do the same.”

God Judges the Wicked

For the choir director: “Do Not Destroy.” A psalm of Asaph.(A) A song.

We give thanks to you, God;
we give thanks to you, for your name is near.(B)
People tell about your wondrous works.(C)

“When I choose a time,
I will judge fairly.(D)
When the earth and all its inhabitants shake,
I am the one who steadies its pillars.(E)Selah
I say to the boastful, ‘Do not boast,’
and to the wicked, ‘Do not lift up your horn.(F)
Do not lift up your horn against heaven[a]
or speak arrogantly.’”(G)

Exaltation does not come
from the east, the west, or the desert,
for God is the Judge:
He brings down one and exalts another.(H)
For there is a cup in the Lord’s hand,
full of wine blended with spices, and he pours from it.
All the wicked of the earth will drink,
draining it to the dregs.(I)

As for me, I will tell about him forever;
I will sing praise to the God of Jacob.(J)

Deuteronomy 21:1-22:30, Luke 9:51-10:12, Psalms 74:1-23, Provers 12:11

Today is the 2nd day of April welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I am Brian is great to be here with you as we get ourselves moved into this fourth month already, the second quarter of the year. And I’m so happy to be here with you, so happy that we’ve made it this far together and that there’s so much out in front of us to learn together step-by-step day by day. So, we’re bringing another one of our weeks were close even are we’re moving into a brand-new month. We’ve been reading from the New International Version this week and continuing our journey through the book of Deuteronomy today. Chapters 21 and 22.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word. And Jesus we love You and one of the things that we learned today is that You love us and this is an all or nothing proposition. Following You requires that we lay down everything and follow You. It requires that we surrender and humble ourselves before You, that we trust You, that we are in a relationship with You. We’re not on a fling with You. We’re not supposed to be fair weather friends or part-time lovers. We are in covenant with You, which means that our allegiance is completely to You. Our loyalty is to You and Your loyalty is to us. Forgive us for all of the times that we have broken faith and walked away in some other direction and been rebellious and been adulteress. This is an all or nothing thing. All that we are, given to You. All that You are given to us. And why You would make some kind of trade like that and why You would love us so deeply really is a mystery but we believe that it is the truth. And, so, our part is to be loyal and in covenant with You. Come Holy Spirit and allow this to sink deep, deep into the soil of our hearts an ever present awareness and understanding. We ask this in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Deuteronomy 21-22

Atonement for an Unsolved Murder

21 If someone is found slain, lying in a field in the land the Lord your God is giving you to possess, and it is not known who the killer was,(A) your elders and judges shall go out and measure the distance from the body to the neighboring towns. Then the elders of the town nearest the body shall take a heifer that has never been worked and has never worn a yoke(B) and lead it down to a valley that has not been plowed or planted and where there is a flowing stream. There in the valley they are to break the heifer’s neck. The Levitical priests shall step forward, for the Lord your God has chosen them to minister and to pronounce blessings(C) in the name of the Lord and to decide all cases of dispute and assault.(D) Then all the elders of the town nearest the body shall wash their hands(E) over the heifer whose neck was broken in the valley, and they shall declare: “Our hands did not shed this blood, nor did our eyes see it done. Accept this atonement for your people Israel, whom you have redeemed, Lord, and do not hold your people guilty of the blood of an innocent person.” Then the bloodshed will be atoned for,(F) and you will have purged(G) from yourselves the guilt of shedding innocent blood, since you have done what is right in the eyes of the Lord.

Marrying a Captive Woman

10 When you go to war against your enemies and the Lord your God delivers them into your hands(H) and you take captives,(I) 11 if you notice among the captives a beautiful(J) woman and are attracted to her,(K) you may take her as your wife. 12 Bring her into your home and have her shave her head,(L) trim her nails 13 and put aside the clothes she was wearing when captured. After she has lived in your house and mourned her father and mother for a full month,(M) then you may go to her and be her husband and she shall be your wife. 14 If you are not pleased with her, let her go wherever she wishes. You must not sell her or treat her as a slave, since you have dishonored her.(N)

The Right of the Firstborn

15 If a man has two wives,(O) and he loves one but not the other, and both bear him sons but the firstborn is the son of the wife he does not love,(P) 16 when he wills his property to his sons, he must not give the rights of the firstborn to the son of the wife he loves in preference to his actual firstborn, the son of the wife he does not love.(Q) 17 He must acknowledge the son of his unloved wife as the firstborn by giving him a double(R) share of all he has. That son is the first sign of his father’s strength.(S) The right of the firstborn belongs to him.(T)

A Rebellious Son

18 If someone has a stubborn and rebellious(U) son(V) who does not obey his father and mother(W) and will not listen to them when they discipline him, 19 his father and mother shall take hold of him and bring him to the elders at the gate of his town. 20 They shall say to the elders, “This son of ours is stubborn and rebellious. He will not obey us. He is a glutton and a drunkard.” 21 Then all the men of his town are to stone him to death.(X) You must purge the evil(Y) from among you. All Israel will hear of it and be afraid.(Z)

Various Laws

22 If someone guilty of a capital offense(AA) is put to death and their body is exposed on a pole, 23 you must not leave the body hanging on the pole overnight.(AB) Be sure to bury(AC) it that same day, because anyone who is hung on a pole is under God’s curse.(AD) You must not desecrate(AE) the land the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance.

22 If you see your fellow Israelite’s ox or sheep straying, do not ignore it but be sure to take it back to its owner.(AF) If they do not live near you or if you do not know who owns it, take it home with you and keep it until they come looking for it. Then give it back. Do the same if you find their donkey or cloak or anything else they have lost. Do not ignore it.

If you see your fellow Israelite’s donkey(AG) or ox fallen on the road, do not ignore it. Help the owner get it to its feet.(AH)

A woman must not wear men’s clothing, nor a man wear women’s clothing, for the Lord your God detests anyone who does this.

If you come across a bird’s nest beside the road, either in a tree or on the ground, and the mother is sitting on the young or on the eggs, do not take the mother with the young.(AI) You may take the young, but be sure to let the mother go,(AJ) so that it may go well with you and you may have a long life.(AK)

When you build a new house, make a parapet around your roof so that you may not bring the guilt of bloodshed on your house if someone falls from the roof.(AL)

Do not plant two kinds of seed in your vineyard;(AM) if you do, not only the crops you plant but also the fruit of the vineyard will be defiled.[a]

10 Do not plow with an ox and a donkey yoked together.(AN)

11 Do not wear clothes of wool and linen woven together.(AO)

12 Make tassels on the four corners of the cloak you wear.(AP)

Marriage Violations

13 If a man takes a wife and, after sleeping with her(AQ), dislikes her 14 and slanders her and gives her a bad name, saying, “I married this woman, but when I approached her, I did not find proof of her virginity,” 15 then the young woman’s father and mother shall bring to the town elders at the gate(AR) proof that she was a virgin. 16 Her father will say to the elders, “I gave my daughter in marriage to this man, but he dislikes her. 17 Now he has slandered her and said, ‘I did not find your daughter to be a virgin.’ But here is the proof of my daughter’s virginity.” Then her parents shall display the cloth before the elders of the town, 18 and the elders(AS) shall take the man and punish him. 19 They shall fine him a hundred shekels[b] of silver and give them to the young woman’s father, because this man has given an Israelite virgin a bad name. She shall continue to be his wife; he must not divorce her as long as he lives.

20 If, however, the charge is true(AT) and no proof of the young woman’s virginity can be found, 21 she shall be brought to the door of her father’s house and there the men of her town shall stone her to death. She has done an outrageous thing(AU) in Israel by being promiscuous while still in her father’s house. You must purge the evil from among you.

22 If a man is found sleeping with another man’s wife, both the man who slept(AV) with her and the woman must die.(AW) You must purge the evil from Israel.

23 If a man happens to meet in a town a virgin pledged to be married and he sleeps with her, 24 you shall take both of them to the gate of that town and stone them to death—the young woman because she was in a town and did not scream for help, and the man because he violated another man’s wife. You must purge the evil from among you.(AX)

25 But if out in the country a man happens to meet a young woman pledged to be married and rapes her, only the man who has done this shall die. 26 Do nothing to the woman; she has committed no sin deserving death. This case is like that of someone who attacks and murders a neighbor, 27 for the man found the young woman out in the country, and though the betrothed woman screamed,(AY) there was no one to rescue her.

28 If a man happens to meet a virgin who is not pledged to be married and rapes her and they are discovered,(AZ) 29 he shall pay her father fifty shekels[c] of silver. He must marry the young woman, for he has violated her. He can never divorce her as long as he lives.

30 A man is not to marry his father’s wife; he must not dishonor his father’s bed.[d](BA)

Luke 9:51-10:12

Samaritan Opposition

51 As the time approached for him to be taken up to heaven,(A) Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem.(B) 52 And he sent messengers on ahead, who went into a Samaritan(C) village to get things ready for him; 53 but the people there did not welcome him, because he was heading for Jerusalem. 54 When the disciples James and John(D) saw this, they asked, “Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven to destroy them[a]?”(E) 55 But Jesus turned and rebuked them. 56 Then he and his disciples went to another village.

The Cost of Following Jesus(F)

57 As they were walking along the road,(G) a man said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.”

58 Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man(H) has no place to lay his head.”

59 He said to another man, “Follow me.”(I)

But he replied, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.”

60 Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God.”(J)

61 Still another said, “I will follow you, Lord; but first let me go back and say goodbye to my family.”(K)

62 Jesus replied, “No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.”

Jesus Sends Out the Seventy-Two(L)(M)(N)

10 After this the Lord(O) appointed seventy-two[b] others(P) and sent them two by two(Q) ahead of him to every town and place where he was about to go.(R) He told them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.(S) Go! I am sending you out like lambs among wolves.(T) Do not take a purse or bag or sandals; and do not greet anyone on the road.

“When you enter a house, first say, ‘Peace to this house.’ If someone who promotes peace is there, your peace will rest on them; if not, it will return to you. Stay there, eating and drinking whatever they give you, for the worker deserves his wages.(U) Do not move around from house to house.

“When you enter a town and are welcomed, eat what is offered to you.(V) Heal the sick who are there and tell them, ‘The kingdom of God(W) has come near to you.’ 10 But when you enter a town and are not welcomed, go into its streets and say, 11 ‘Even the dust of your town we wipe from our feet as a warning to you.(X) Yet be sure of this: The kingdom of God has come near.’(Y) 12 I tell you, it will be more bearable on that day for Sodom(Z) than for that town.(AA)

Psalm 74

Psalm 74

A maskil[a] of Asaph.

O God, why have you rejected(A) us forever?(B)
Why does your anger smolder against the sheep of your pasture?(C)
Remember the nation you purchased(D) long ago,(E)
the people of your inheritance,(F) whom you redeemed(G)
Mount Zion,(H) where you dwelt.(I)
Turn your steps toward these everlasting ruins,(J)
all this destruction the enemy has brought on the sanctuary.

Your foes roared(K) in the place where you met with us;
they set up their standards(L) as signs.
They behaved like men wielding axes
to cut through a thicket of trees.(M)
They smashed all the carved(N) paneling
with their axes and hatchets.
They burned your sanctuary to the ground;
they defiled(O) the dwelling place(P) of your Name.(Q)
They said in their hearts, “We will crush(R) them completely!”
They burned(S) every place where God was worshiped in the land.

We are given no signs from God;(T)
no prophets(U) are left,
and none of us knows how long this will be.
10 How long(V) will the enemy mock(W) you, God?
Will the foe revile(X) your name forever?
11 Why do you hold back your hand, your right hand?(Y)
Take it from the folds of your garment(Z) and destroy them!

12 But God is my King(AA) from long ago;
he brings salvation(AB) on the earth.

13 It was you who split open the sea(AC) by your power;
you broke the heads of the monster(AD) in the waters.
14 It was you who crushed the heads of Leviathan(AE)
and gave it as food to the creatures of the desert.(AF)
15 It was you who opened up springs(AG) and streams;
you dried up(AH) the ever-flowing rivers.
16 The day is yours, and yours also the night;
you established the sun and moon.(AI)
17 It was you who set all the boundaries(AJ) of the earth;
you made both summer and winter.(AK)

18 Remember how the enemy has mocked you, Lord,
how foolish people(AL) have reviled your name.
19 Do not hand over the life of your dove(AM) to wild beasts;
do not forget the lives of your afflicted(AN) people forever.
20 Have regard for your covenant,(AO)
because haunts of violence fill the dark places(AP) of the land.
21 Do not let the oppressed(AQ) retreat in disgrace;
may the poor and needy(AR) praise your name.
22 Rise up,(AS) O God, and defend your cause;
remember how fools(AT) mock you all day long.
23 Do not ignore the clamor(AU) of your adversaries,(AV)
the uproar(AW) of your enemies,(AX) which rises continually.

Deuteronomy 18:1-20:20, Luke 9:28-50, Psalm 73:1-28, Proverbs 12:10

Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible, I’m Brian and today is April 1st, it is April Fools’ Day. So, I bet a lot of people are tricking each other. Today, on this very good day, today is the first day of April, it’s the month of Easter the day when Jesus rose from his tomb. Today, we are reading in the today we’re reading in Luke 9:28 through 50. And we’ll be doing that right after we read from the book of Deuteronomy in the Old Testament. Had to change my voice back from my childhood voice. Strange things happen around the Daily Audio Bible on the first day of April, so let’s dive into our reading for today, Deuteronomy chapters 18, 19 and 20.

Commentary:

Thanks for being here today’s Ezekiel. Ezekiel: You’re welcome. Brian: Do you think we fooled anybody? Ezekiel: I think so. Brian: I think we might have fooled people. They may be like, what is this, what’s going on here. But you’ve been reading for Daily Audio Bible Kids now and this is your second year. How’s that going? Ezekiel: Good. Brian: Things are going really, really well at Daily Audio Bible Kids. Have you learned a lot now that you’ve read through the whole New Testament? Ezekiel: Uh huh. Brian: A lot of things about Jesus. Ezekiel: Uh huh. Brian: I loved what you read from the Gospel today because Jesus was with little children and he took the little child and he had a little child stand beside him and then He said, whoever welcomes this little child in my name, welcomes me. And whoever welcomes me, welcomes the one who sent me. For it is the one who is least among you all, who is the greatest. And so, you are very, very valuable. All the kids out there very, very, very, very valuable in God’s kingdom. I like that part today. Ezekiel: Yeah, me too. Brian: Well, thank you for being here on April 1st. Ezekiel: You’re welcome. Brian: And sharing your reading with us. We love you. Ezekiel: You’re welcome. Brian: And we’ll have you back again soon. Ezekiel: Okay. Brian: All right, bye. Ezekiel: Byyyyye

Prayer:

And father, we thank You for Your word and an opportunity on this day to switch things up a little bit of fun. Thank You for that. Thank You for the rich reminder of children in your kingdom and how valuable they are and may we pay attention to that as grown-ups, as adults, as parents that we are holding the future of God’s kingdom in our hands. You have entrusted us in such a way that we love it, but we don’t deserve it and may we really truly embrace the fact that this is what comes next. These children of ours, they are what comes next, not only in this world, but in Your kingdom and so may we store this treasure well, we pray in the precious name of Jesus, we ask. Amen.

Prayer and Encouragements:

Hello, this is Ben from Minnesota. Say I called about six weeks ago and was talking about how my wife and I are heading to Liberia to adopt a child. And we are still here and it’s taken quite a bit longer what we anticipated and there’s some, some challenges on the US immigration side and our case has been sent to Washington DC to be reviewed and we’re kind of holding steady here. We’ve had some health issues that my wife had a health scare and I had some health challenges probably partly because of the stress and we we’re really hoping that will hear something this week and it will be good news and we’ll be able to head home soon. Some things in DC are probably delayed because of the War in Ukraine so there’s, there’s lots of moving pieces but we’d appreciate prayer for the US consulate here and whoever’s reviewing our case in DC for favor and blessing and grace to move forward quickly and for good news soon. So, thanks very much, we appreciated it or we appreciate it again. We were, we were expecting to be here about 3 to 4 weeks and were at 5 ½ and kind of no end in sight or no clear end in sight. So, thanks again. All the best, love ya’ll, bye.

Hello, this message is for a gentleman who called to show that he and his wife have been married 59 years. And I want to say congratulations and God bless the two of you. You asked for prayer for your, yourself and your wife because you’re up in age and you mentioned that you never know when you’re gonna go, but sir, I am praying for you and I and your wife and your family children your 38 grandchildren, that’s amazing. God bless you sir, God bless you, your health, body, mind and spirit, all that you are, you and your wife. And your children are so blessed to have the two of you together in their lives. I pray in the name of Jesus Christ, you have longer days with your family. I pray for your heart. I pray peace for you and I pray that you just feel amazing renewal in your body. I pray for your heart and your mind, sir. God bless you. Also pray for Alisha, your father just passed away at 92 years old. That’s a long time. It’s a blessing to have your father in your life and you had a hard time with religion and violence and so forth. And I pray for your heart as well. Pray for restoration. I pray that your blessed with great memories. I pray for healing. I pray for your days ahead and that yes, you know, the Lord deeply more deeper as your father God in heaven and earth that you will be reminded your loved by our heavenly Father. Jesus name. Amen.

Good morning Daily Audio Bible family this is John O’Connor. I usually call in from South Sudan but right now I am at Heathrow airport in UK, in London to on my way back to South Sudan. I’ve spent two weeks in the US and two weeks in UK with my family and that has been glorious. Thank you for everyone who pray for me and the I am also following with the I am so excited to hear Michael the son of Diana Davis that passed away about two years ago. And I’m sorry that their struggling at this time with the Elijah having issues but I am standing with you guys in prayer and God is not asleep. He is awake and He will do what He does best. He will step into your situation and bring to bear the grace of God in your life. May God bless you and also I would like to announce that my retirement has been determined and that will be June 30 2024. So, I have a little over a year, two years to go and I need prayer for that.

Hello, Daily Audio Bible. So, I have been listening for over a decade and you can just call me, I’m a Lady and my mom is really, really not well. I’ve never called before, huge supporter of DAB. But I’m asking all the prayer warriors to please pray for her. She’s unable to eat and she is very weak. So, I would really appreciate if you guys would pray for her. I’m not ready to lose my mom ye. I’m fairly young, this came up kind of out of no where. But she’s also being heavily spiritually attacked and so I’ve been fasting and me and my sisters are really, really exhausted. Just up all night so I’m begging and asking for you guys to pray for her and that the power of prayer for a speedy recovery in a supernatural recovery and to release from spiritual attack. Ask the Lord, tell her to eat and to allow her to drink. She is a Devine Saint. And very amazing and loves us very much. So, this kind of came out of nowhere so I’m asking everybody for mercy please. Thank you, guys very much and thank you for the DAB, for all that you guys do. It’s been over a decade, I listen every morning, quietly. And so, yeah, for the first time calling. Cause I feel like I need a prayer warriors and step into this matter to ask the Lord to intervene. Okay, thank you.

Hi, Daily Audi Bible family. My name is Vicky from Texas. And first, I’d just like to tell everybody how much I appreciate being part of this community. There’s a number of you who have called in over the last few years and I’ve written your name down on my prayer list and I continue to pray for you, every time I look at that list. I’d also like to ask you please to hold me and my family up in prayers. My mom has mild Alzheimer’s. She wasn’t an easy lady to grow up with any way but the Alzheimer’s has definitely not made it any easier. Our family is living the path that God told us about in the Bible, about how the sins of the Father will be visited upon the children for generations. I don’t know how far back it stretches but I know my great-grandfather was an alcoholic who left his family and that scarred my grandfather. And those scars in turn, made him a rough person for my mom to grow up with, just emotionally unavailable and explosive. And so, my mom is a thousand times better than the parents she grew up with but she even admitted to me once, just after my father died that she walled off her heart, even to my father, even to my brother and I. So, now here she is with her mild Alzheimer’s which only accentuates a lot of the personality traits that she had and it’s very difficult. Her love is unconditional, but her affection is definitely. She’s always seen me as a rival and somebody to be jealous of instead of someone to be proud of. So, the harder I strived to do well and overachieve in life and gain her love and affection, the more it pushed her away. So now that I’m doing everything I can to take care of her, it’s just even harder to have that affection withheld. So, I would just ask you to hold my mom up, pray for restoration and pray please for me to have the strength to keep carrying on. I love ya’ll.

Deuteronomy 18-20

Offerings for Priests and Levites

18 The Levitical(A) priests—indeed, the whole tribe of Levi—are to have no allotment or inheritance with Israel. They shall live on the food offerings(B) presented to the Lord, for that is their inheritance.(C) They shall have no inheritance among their fellow Israelites; the Lord is their inheritance,(D) as he promised them.(E)

This is the share due the priests(F) from the people who sacrifice a bull(G) or a sheep: the shoulder, the internal organs and the meat from the head.(H) You are to give them the firstfruits of your grain, new wine and olive oil, and the first wool from the shearing of your sheep,(I) for the Lord your God has chosen them(J) and their descendants out of all your tribes to stand and minister(K) in the Lord’s name always.(L)

If a Levite moves from one of your towns anywhere in Israel where he is living, and comes in all earnestness to the place the Lord will choose,(M) he may minister in the name(N) of the Lord his God like all his fellow Levites who serve there in the presence of the Lord. He is to share equally in their benefits, even though he has received money from the sale of family possessions.(O)

Occult Practices

When you enter the land the Lord your God is giving you, do not learn to imitate(P) the detestable ways(Q) of the nations there. 10 Let no one be found among you who sacrifices their son or daughter in the fire,(R) who practices divination(S) or sorcery,(T) interprets omens, engages in witchcraft,(U) 11 or casts spells,(V) or who is a medium or spiritist(W) or who consults the dead. 12 Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord; because of these same detestable practices the Lord your God will drive out those nations before you.(X) 13 You must be blameless(Y) before the Lord your God.(Z)

The Prophet

14 The nations you will dispossess listen to those who practice sorcery or divination.(AA) But as for you, the Lord your God has not permitted you to do so. 15 The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your fellow Israelites.(AB) You must listen to him. 16 For this is what you asked of the Lord your God at Horeb on the day of the assembly when you said, “Let us not hear the voice of the Lord our God nor see this great fire anymore, or we will die.”(AC)

17 The Lord said to me: “What they say is good. 18 I will raise up for them a prophet(AD) like you from among their fellow Israelites, and I will put my words(AE) in his mouth.(AF) He will tell them everything I command him.(AG) 19 I myself will call to account(AH) anyone who does not listen(AI) to my words that the prophet speaks in my name.(AJ) 20 But a prophet who presumes to speak in my name anything I have not commanded, or a prophet who speaks in the name of other gods,(AK) is to be put to death.”(AL)

21 You may say to yourselves, “How can we know when a message has not been spoken by the Lord?” 22 If what a prophet proclaims in the name of the Lord does not take place or come true,(AM) that is a message the Lord has not spoken.(AN) That prophet has spoken presumptuously,(AO) so do not be alarmed.

Cities of Refuge(AP)

19 When the Lord your God has destroyed the nations whose land he is giving you, and when you have driven them out and settled in their towns and houses,(AQ) then set aside for yourselves three cities in the land the Lord your God is giving you to possess. Determine the distances involved and divide into three parts the land the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance, so that a person who kills someone may flee for refuge to one of these cities.

This is the rule concerning anyone who kills a person and flees there for safety—anyone who kills a neighbor unintentionally, without malice aforethought. For instance, a man may go into the forest with his neighbor to cut wood, and as he swings his ax to fell a tree, the head may fly off and hit his neighbor and kill him. That man may flee to one of these cities and save his life. Otherwise, the avenger of blood(AR) might pursue him in a rage, overtake him if the distance is too great, and kill him even though he is not deserving of death, since he did it to his neighbor without malice aforethought. This is why I command you to set aside for yourselves three cities.

If the Lord your God enlarges your territory,(AS) as he promised(AT) on oath to your ancestors, and gives you the whole land he promised them, because you carefully follow all these laws I command you today—to love the Lord your God and to walk always in obedience to him(AU)—then you are to set aside three more cities. 10 Do this so that innocent blood(AV) will not be shed in your land, which the Lord your God is giving you as your inheritance, and so that you will not be guilty of bloodshed.(AW)

11 But if out of hate someone lies in wait, assaults and kills a neighbor,(AX) and then flees to one of these cities, 12 the killer shall be sent for by the town elders, be brought back from the city, and be handed over to the avenger of blood to die. 13 Show no pity.(AY) You must purge from Israel the guilt of shedding innocent blood,(AZ) so that it may go well with you.

14 Do not move your neighbor’s boundary stone set up by your predecessors in the inheritance you receive in the land the Lord your God is giving you to possess.(BA)

Witnesses

15 One witness is not enough to convict anyone accused of any crime or offense they may have committed. A matter must be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.(BB)

16 If a malicious witness(BC) takes the stand to accuse someone of a crime, 17 the two people involved in the dispute must stand in the presence of the Lord before the priests and the judges(BD) who are in office at the time. 18 The judges must make a thorough investigation,(BE) and if the witness proves to be a liar, giving false testimony against a fellow Israelite, 19 then do to the false witness as that witness intended to do to the other party.(BF) You must purge the evil from among you. 20 The rest of the people will hear of this and be afraid,(BG) and never again will such an evil thing be done among you. 21 Show no pity:(BH) life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot.(BI)

Going to War

20 When you go to war against your enemies and see horses and chariots and an army greater than yours,(BJ) do not be afraid(BK) of them,(BL) because the Lord your God, who brought you up out of Egypt, will be with(BM) you. When you are about to go into battle, the priest shall come forward and address the army. He shall say: “Hear, Israel: Today you are going into battle against your enemies. Do not be fainthearted(BN) or afraid; do not panic or be terrified by them. For the Lord your God is the one who goes with you(BO) to fight(BP) for you against your enemies to give you victory.(BQ)

The officers shall say to the army: “Has anyone built a new house and not yet begun to live in(BR) it? Let him go home, or he may die in battle and someone else may begin to live in it. Has anyone planted(BS) a vineyard and not begun to enjoy it?(BT) Let him go home, or he may die in battle and someone else enjoy it. Has anyone become pledged to a woman and not married her? Let him go home, or he may die in battle and someone else marry her.(BU) Then the officers shall add, “Is anyone afraid or fainthearted? Let him go home so that his fellow soldiers will not become disheartened too.”(BV) When the officers have finished speaking to the army, they shall appoint commanders over it.

10 When you march up to attack a city, make its people an offer of peace.(BW) 11 If they accept and open their gates, all the people in it shall be subject(BX) to forced labor(BY) and shall work for you. 12 If they refuse to make peace and they engage you in battle, lay siege to that city. 13 When the Lord your God delivers it into your hand, put to the sword all the men in it.(BZ) 14 As for the women, the children, the livestock(CA) and everything else in the city,(CB) you may take these as plunder(CC) for yourselves. And you may use the plunder the Lord your God gives you from your enemies. 15 This is how you are to treat all the cities that are at a distance(CD) from you and do not belong to the nations nearby.

16 However, in the cities of the nations the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance, do not leave alive anything that breathes.(CE) 17 Completely destroy[a] them—the Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites—as the Lord your God has commanded you. 18 Otherwise, they will teach you to follow all the detestable things they do in worshiping their gods,(CF) and you will sin(CG) against the Lord your God.

19 When you lay siege to a city for a long time, fighting against it to capture it, do not destroy its trees by putting an ax to them, because you can eat their fruit. Do not cut them down. Are the trees people, that you should besiege them?[b] 20 However, you may cut down trees that you know are not fruit trees(CH) and use them to build siege works until the city at war with you falls.

Luke 9:28-50

The Transfiguration(A)

28 About eight days after Jesus said this, he took Peter, John and James(B) with him and went up onto a mountain to pray.(C) 29 As he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became as bright as a flash of lightning. 30 Two men, Moses and Elijah, appeared in glorious splendor, talking with Jesus. 31 They spoke about his departure,[a](D) which he was about to bring to fulfillment at Jerusalem. 32 Peter and his companions were very sleepy,(E) but when they became fully awake, they saw his glory and the two men standing with him. 33 As the men were leaving Jesus, Peter said to him, “Master,(F) it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.” (He did not know what he was saying.)

34 While he was speaking, a cloud appeared and covered them, and they were afraid as they entered the cloud. 35 A voice came from the cloud, saying, “This is my Son, whom I have chosen;(G) listen to him.”(H) 36 When the voice had spoken, they found that Jesus was alone. The disciples kept this to themselves and did not tell anyone at that time what they had seen.(I)

Jesus Heals a Demon-Possessed Boy(J)

37 The next day, when they came down from the mountain, a large crowd met him. 38 A man in the crowd called out, “Teacher, I beg you to look at my son, for he is my only child. 39 A spirit seizes him and he suddenly screams; it throws him into convulsions so that he foams at the mouth. It scarcely ever leaves him and is destroying him. 40 I begged your disciples to drive it out, but they could not.”

41 “You unbelieving and perverse generation,”(K) Jesus replied, “how long shall I stay with you and put up with you? Bring your son here.”

42 Even while the boy was coming, the demon threw him to the ground in a convulsion. But Jesus rebuked the impure spirit, healed the boy and gave him back to his father. 43 And they were all amazed at the greatness of God.

Jesus Predicts His Death a Second Time

While everyone was marveling at all that Jesus did, he said to his disciples, 44 “Listen carefully to what I am about to tell you: The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men.”(L) 45 But they did not understand what this meant. It was hidden from them, so that they did not grasp it,(M) and they were afraid to ask him about it.

46 An argument started among the disciples as to which of them would be the greatest.(N) 47 Jesus, knowing their thoughts,(O) took a little child and had him stand beside him. 48 Then he said to them, “Whoever welcomes this little child in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me.(P) For it is the one who is least among you all who is the greatest.”(Q)

49 “Master,”(R) said John, “we saw someone driving out demons in your name and we tried to stop him, because he is not one of us.”

50 “Do not stop him,” Jesus said, “for whoever is not against you is for you.”(S)

Psalm 73

BOOK III

Psalms 73–89

Psalm 73

A psalm of Asaph.

Surely God is good to Israel,
to those who are pure in heart.(A)

But as for me, my feet had almost slipped;(B)
I had nearly lost my foothold.(C)
For I envied(D) the arrogant
when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.(E)

They have no struggles;
their bodies are healthy and strong.[a]
They are free(F) from common human burdens;
they are not plagued by human ills.
Therefore pride(G) is their necklace;(H)
they clothe themselves with violence.(I)
From their callous hearts(J) comes iniquity[b];
their evil imaginations have no limits.
They scoff, and speak with malice;(K)
with arrogance(L) they threaten oppression.(M)
Their mouths lay claim to heaven,
and their tongues take possession of the earth.
10 Therefore their people turn to them
and drink up waters in abundance.[c]
11 They say, “How would God know?
Does the Most High know anything?”

12 This is what the wicked are like—
always free of care,(N) they go on amassing wealth.(O)

13 Surely in vain(P) I have kept my heart pure
and have washed my hands in innocence.(Q)
14 All day long I have been afflicted,(R)
and every morning brings new punishments.

15 If I had spoken out like that,
I would have betrayed your children.
16 When I tried to understand(S) all this,
it troubled me deeply
17 till I entered the sanctuary(T) of God;
then I understood their final destiny.(U)

18 Surely you place them on slippery ground;(V)
you cast them down to ruin.(W)
19 How suddenly(X) are they destroyed,
completely swept away(Y) by terrors!
20 They are like a dream(Z) when one awakes;(AA)
when you arise, Lord,
you will despise them as fantasies.(AB)

21 When my heart was grieved
and my spirit embittered,
22 I was senseless(AC) and ignorant;
I was a brute beast(AD) before you.

23 Yet I am always with you;
you hold me by my right hand.(AE)
24 You guide(AF) me with your counsel,(AG)
and afterward you will take me into glory.
25 Whom have I in heaven but you?(AH)
And earth has nothing I desire besides you.(AI)
26 My flesh and my heart(AJ) may fail,(AK)
but God is the strength(AL) of my heart
and my portion(AM) forever.

27 Those who are far from you will perish;(AN)
you destroy all who are unfaithful(AO) to you.
28 But as for me, it is good to be near God.(AP)
I have made the Sovereign Lord my refuge;(AQ)
I will tell of all your deeds.(AR)
