Exodus 4:1-5:21

Moses Given Powerful Signs

Then Moses answered, “But behold, they will not believe me or listen to my voice, for they will say, ‘The Lord did not appear to you.’” The Lord said to him, “What is that in your hand?” He said, (A)“A staff.” And he said, “Throw it on the ground.” So he threw it on the ground, and it became a serpent, and Moses ran from it. But the Lord said to Moses, “Put out your hand and catch it by the tail”—so he put out his hand and caught it, and it became a staff in his hand— “that they may (B)believe that the Lord, (C)the God of their fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has appeared to you.” Again, the Lord said to him, “Put your hand inside your cloak.”[a] And he put his hand inside his cloak, and when he took it out, behold, his hand was (D)leprous[b] like snow. Then God said, “Put your hand back inside your cloak.” So he put his hand back inside his cloak, and when he took it out, behold, (E)it was restored like the rest of his flesh. “If they will not believe you,” God said, “or listen to the first sign, they may believe the latter sign. If they will not believe even these two signs or listen to your voice, you shall take some water from the Nile and pour it on the dry ground, and the water that you shall take from the Nile (F)will become blood on the dry ground.”

10 But Moses said to the Lord, “Oh, my Lord, I am not eloquent, either in the past or since you have spoken to your servant, but (G)I am slow of speech and of tongue.” 11 Then the Lord said to him, “Who has made man's mouth? Who makes him mute, or deaf, or seeing, or blind? Is it not I, the Lord? 12 Now therefore go, and (H)I will be with your mouth and teach you what you shall speak.” 13 But he said, “Oh, my Lord, please send someone else.” 14 Then the anger of the Lord was kindled against Moses and he said, “Is there not Aaron, your brother, the Levite? I know that he can speak well. Behold, (I)he is coming out to meet you, and when he sees you, he will be glad in his heart. 15 (J)You shall speak to him and (K)put the words in his mouth, and (L)I will be with your mouth and with his mouth and will teach you both what to do. 16 (M)He shall speak for you to the people, and he shall be your mouth, and (N)you shall be as God to him. 17 And take in your hand (O)this staff, with which you shall do the signs.”

Moses Returns to Egypt

18 Moses went back to (P)Jethro his father-in-law and said to him, “Please let me go back to my brothers in Egypt to see whether they are still alive.” And Jethro said to Moses, “Go in peace.” 19 And the Lord said to Moses in Midian, “Go back to Egypt, for (Q)all the men who were seeking your life are dead.” 20 So Moses took (R)his wife and his sons and had them ride on a donkey, and went back to the land of Egypt. And Moses took (S)the staff of God in his hand.

21 And the Lord said to Moses, “When you go back to Egypt, see that you do before Pharaoh all the (T)miracles that I have put in your power. But (U)I will harden his heart, so that he will not let the people go. 22 Then you shall say to Pharaoh, ‘Thus says the Lord, (V)Israel is my (W)firstborn son, 23 and I say to you, “Let my son go that he may serve me.” If you refuse to let him go, behold, I (X)will kill your firstborn son.’”

24 At a lodging place on the way (Y)the Lord met him and (Z)sought to put him to death. 25 Then (AA)Zipporah took a (AB)flint and cut off her son's foreskin and touched Moses'[c] feet with it and said, “Surely you are a bridegroom of blood to me!” 26 So he let him alone. It was then that she said, “A bridegroom of blood,” because of the circumcision.

27 The Lord said to Aaron, “Go into the wilderness (AC)to meet Moses.” So he went and met him at the (AD)mountain of God and kissed him. 28 And Moses (AE)told Aaron all the words of the Lord with which he had sent him to speak, and all (AF)the signs that he had commanded him to do. 29 Then Moses and Aaron (AG)went and gathered together all the elders of the people of Israel. 30 (AH)Aaron spoke all the words that the Lord had spoken to Moses and did the signs in the sight of the people. 31 And the people (AI)believed; and when they heard that the Lord had (AJ)visited the people of Israel and that he had (AK)seen their affliction, (AL)they bowed their heads and worshiped.

Making Bricks Without Straw

Afterward Moses and Aaron went and said to Pharaoh, “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, ‘Let my people go, that they may hold (AM)a feast to me in the wilderness.’” But Pharaoh said, (AN)“Who is the Lord, that I should obey his voice and let Israel go? I do not know the Lord, and moreover, (AO)I will not let Israel go.” Then they said, “The (AP)God of the Hebrews has met with us. Please let us go a three days' journey into the wilderness that we may sacrifice to the Lord our God, lest he fall upon us with pestilence or with the sword.” But the king of Egypt said to them, “Moses and Aaron, why do you take the people away from their work? Get back to your (AQ)burdens.” And Pharaoh said, “Behold, (AR)the people of the land are now many,[d] and you make them rest from their burdens!” The same day Pharaoh commanded the (AS)taskmasters of the people and their (AT)foremen, “You shall no longer give the people straw to make bricks, as in the past; let them go and gather straw for themselves. But the number of bricks that they made in the past you shall impose on them, you shall by no means reduce it, for they are idle. Therefore they cry, ‘Let us go and offer sacrifice to our God.’ Let heavier work be laid on the men that they may labor at it and pay no regard to lying words.”

10 So the (AU)taskmasters and the foremen of the people went out and said to the people, “Thus says Pharaoh, ‘I will not give you straw. 11 Go and get your straw yourselves wherever you can find it, but your work will not be reduced in the least.’” 12 So the people were scattered throughout all the land of Egypt to gather stubble for straw. 13 The (AV)taskmasters were urgent, saying, “Complete your work, your daily task each day, as when there was straw.” 14 And the foremen of the people of Israel, whom Pharaoh's (AW)taskmasters had set over them, were beaten and were asked, “Why have you not done all your task of making bricks today and yesterday, as in the past?”

15 Then the foremen of the people of Israel came and cried to Pharaoh, “Why do you treat your servants like this? 16 No straw is given to your servants, yet they say to us, ‘Make bricks!’ And behold, your servants are beaten; but the fault is in your own people.” 17 But he said, “You are idle, you are idle; that is why you say, ‘Let us go and sacrifice to the Lord.’ 18 Go now and work. No straw will be given you, but you must still deliver the same number of bricks.” 19 The foremen of the people of Israel saw that they were in trouble when they said, “You shall by no means reduce your number of bricks, your daily task each day.” 20 They met Moses and Aaron, who were waiting for them, as they came out from Pharaoh; 21 and (AX)they said to them, “The Lord look on you and judge, because you have made us stink in the sight of Pharaoh and his servants, and have put a sword in their hand to kill us.”

Matthew 18:1-20

Who Is the Greatest?

18 (A)At that time the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” And calling to him a child, he put him in the midst of them and said, “Truly, I say to you, unless you (B)turn and (C)become like children, you (D)will never enter the kingdom of heaven. (E)Whoever humbles himself like this child is the (F)greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

(G)“Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me, but (H)whoever causes one of these (I)little ones who believe in me to sin,[a] it would be better for him to have a great millstone fastened around his neck and to be drowned in the depth of the sea.

Temptations to Sin

“Woe to the world for (J)temptations to sin![b] (K)For it is necessary that temptations come, (L)but woe to the one by whom the temptation comes! (M)And if your hand or your foot causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life crippled or lame than with two hands or two feet to be thrown into (N)the eternal fire. (O)And if your eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life with one eye than with two eyes to be thrown into the (P)hell[c] of fire.

The Parable of the Lost Sheep

10 “See that you do not despise (Q)one of these little ones. For I tell you that in heaven (R)their angels always (S)see the face of my Father who is in heaven.[d] 12 (T)What do you think? (U)If a man has a hundred sheep, and one of them has gone astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine on the mountains and go in search of the one that went astray? 13 And if he finds it, truly, I say to you, he rejoices over it more than over the ninety-nine that never went astray. 14 So (V)it is not the will of my[e] Father who is in heaven that one of these little ones should perish.

If Your Brother Sins Against You

15 (W)“If your brother sins against you, (X)go and tell him his fault, between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have (Y)gained your brother. 16 But if he does not listen, take one or two others along with you, that every charge may be established (Z)by the evidence of two or three witnesses. 17 If he refuses to listen to them, (AA)tell it to the church. And if he refuses to listen even to the church, (AB)let him be to you as (AC)a Gentile and (AD)a tax collector. 18 Truly, I say to you, (AE)whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed[f] in heaven. 19 Again I say to you, if two of you (AF)agree on earth about anything they ask, (AG)it will be done for them by my Father in heaven. 20 For where two or three are (AH)gathered in my name, (AI)there am I among them.”

Psalm 22:19-31

19 But you, O Lord, (A)do not be far off!
O you my help, (B)come quickly to my aid!
20 Deliver my soul from the sword,
my precious life from the power of (C)the dog!
21 Save me from (D)the mouth of the lion!
You have rescued[a] me from the horns of (E)the wild oxen!

22 (F)I will tell of your name to my (G)brothers;
in the midst of the congregation I will praise you:
23 You who (H)fear the Lord, praise him!
All you offspring of Jacob, (I)glorify him,
and stand in awe of him, all you offspring of Israel!
24 For he has not despised or abhorred
the affliction of (J)the afflicted,
and he has not (K)hidden his face from him,
but has heard, when he (L)cried to him.

25 From you comes my praise in the great (M)congregation;
my (N)vows I will (O)perform before those who fear him.
26 (P)The afflicted[b] shall (Q)eat and be satisfied;
those who seek him shall praise the Lord!
May your hearts (R)live forever!

27 All (S)the ends of the earth shall remember
and turn to the Lord,
and all (T)the families of the nations
shall worship before you.
28 For (U)kingship belongs to the Lord,
and he rules over the nations.

29 All (V)the prosperous of the earth eat and worship;
before him shall (W)bow all who go down to the dust,
even the one who could not (X)keep himself alive.
30 Posterity shall serve him;
it shall be told of the Lord to the coming (Y)generation;
31 they shall (Z)come and proclaim his righteousness to a people yet (AA)unborn,
that he has done it.

15 Drink (A)water from your own cistern,
flowing water from your own well.
16 Should your (B)springs be scattered abroad,

17 (D)Let them be for yourself alone,
and not for strangers with you.
18 Let your (E)fountain be blessed,

19 a lovely (H)deer, a graceful doe.
Let her breasts (I)fill you at all times with delight;

Exodus 2:11-3:22, Mathew 17:10-27, Psalms 22:1-18, Proverbs 5:7-14

Today is the 26th day of January welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I’m Brian it is a joy, it is a privilege to be here with you today as we gather, kinda come in out of the cold, com in out of whatever, the chaos, whatever it is and just find our place around the Global Campfire and exhale. In fact, let’s do it. Let’s take a deep breath and exhale. Let it go. Isn’t interesting how just one deep breath and slow exhale, something happens in our body where we’re like okay, changing gears here for a second. It’s remarkable. Let’s do it again. Let’s take a deep breath and let it go. All of the cares of life, they’ll be there. We can go pick and choose whatever we want to pick up. If it’s the anxiety that we’re letting go of for a few minutes, we can go get it if we want it. It’s the depression or if it’s just the issues that we gotta deal with today, all we need is a few minutes here to let those things go. We may not need to go pick them back up or if we do need to go pick them back up maybe we can do it with a different perspective. And, so, let’s let everything go and just move into this time. It is safe, serene we are here together. All is well. Yesterday when we were reading, we met this new figure, and we will…well…we’ll actually never escape this figure. He will keep showing up throughout the rest of the Bible. But right now, we’re in the center of his story. His name is Moses and we found him in a basket in the Nile River and Pharaoh’s daughter also found him and his mother got to nurse him and then Pharaoh’s daughter adopted him. And, so, Moses the Hebrew infant that was supposed to be thrown into the Nile River because he was a male child and should’ve drowned instead became Pharaoh’s son, adopted son and was raised getting educated like a royal education. And, so, let’s pick up the story. Exodus chapter 2 verse 11 through 3 verse 22.

Commentary:

Okay, so in the book of Matthew today Jesus throws out a demon out of a person and the disciples had not been able to accomplish this task. And, so, it almost seems like Jesus is exasperated, “O faithless and twisted generation how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you?” What’s He frustrated about? Like what is it that they aren’t getting that He keeps trying to show or model or teach and their just not getting it all so that He would be perplexed like this? The key is in what he said, “o faithless and twisted generation.” So, he heals this person. The disciples come to Him and say, “why couldn’t we do that?” And He says to them, “because of your little faith”, right? “Your faithlessness.” So, let’s just pause there and think about that for a minute because we have already encountered the concept of faith. Obviously, we can’t escape the concept of faith. The Bible tells us it’s impossible to please God without faith. So, if you are ye of little faith…well then you can guess do the math. Jesus goes on to say something famous, “if you have faith like the grain of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain move from here to there and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you.” So, then we could deduce that there was faith, less significantly less, then the grain of a mustard seed in the story that were just reading because Jesus is like, “you can move mountains if you just have a little faith.” So, we’re starting to get clues that faith is a very powerful thing in our existence. So, if a tiny speck of faith the size of a little…the size of a little seed can move mountains then what could a lot of faith, like what could full up faith look like when Jesus basically tells us, “nothing will be impossible for you.” So, what…what can we get from this though? Like what…I mean we can understand the concept here but what is He really trying to say that can help us right now live today? Jesus is trying to model for those who are listening to Him that what He is doing is not remarkable it’s supposed to be normal. What we will hear from Jesus in the Gospels as we continue forward, He will say, “yeah, all these things you’re seeing me do, you can do all this. You can do greater than this.” So, what’s the plot behind the story here. Maybe we try our very best to have faith in God. So that God will then go and do something on our behalf. And then when he doesn’t, we get really really frustrated when perhaps what Jesus is modeling and teaching His disciples, and if we are His disciples, and that includes us, then what we’re beginning to see is that we are empowered. Let’s think about this. Think of Jesus healing people. What does He say so often to somebody who has received something? “Go in peace, your faith has made you well.” Maybe there really is something to this faith thing. And maybe as we walk with God and continue this process of being transformed from who we were to who we were intended to be as we find an identity as a child of the most-high, as we walk with God and cultivate faith in our lives, maybe nothing is impossible. After all that is a fundamental understanding of the Christian faith. Maybe we keep sitting back waiting for God to do something that He’s sitting back waiting for us to do. Maybe this is a dance. Maybe this is a collaboration. Maybe God’s not our squire. Maybe He’s not our servant after all. Maybe He doesn’t jump up to do whatever we tell Him to do. Maybe this is a dance. And maybe this is a dance where nothing is impossible. Let’s think about that today. Remember when we came in here just a few minutes ago and we were talking about just coming around the Global Campfire and we took a few deep breaths and we talked about all the stuff that we’re gonna just leave outside of the circle and them we can go back to it in any way that we want to go back to it. What if we go back to it understanding that we are in a dance of life we’re nothing is impossible? That changes things.

Prayer:

Holy Spirit come, come into that. We become aware of Your presence, that never leaves us. You would never leave us or forsake us. You are always present. We are just mostly unaware. Like Jacob, “surely the Lord was in this place and I was unaware of it.” Help us to become aware that there is nowhere that we can go that You are not, and that You have invited us into a relationship a covenantal relationship where we can walk with You and our faith can be cultivated and increased. And yes, sometimes that happens through endurance. So, come Holy Spirit come and help us to zoom out and get like a bird’s eye view, an overview of what we’ve been lost in. Because when we can get and higher perspective and see everything around us, we can see so much more clearly. Come Holy Spirit we pray. In the name of Jesus, we ask. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Good morning my name is Roxanne and I’m calling because I’m asking for prayers for my children. Their father had passed away last night from Covid and complications. And I also have a son that has been living with him that is on drugs. But now we need to find help for my children and I’m asking for prayers for strength. Thank you.

Good day folks it’s Sean from Sydney down under here. I actually became a Christian very recently, the tail end of last year and I was so thankful to be saved and now I’ve started listening to the Daily Audio Bible and I’ve been also reading a Bible plan so I can read it in one year and I’ve just been frothing on it it’s been so good. I’m actually getting baptized on Sunday, two days from now and I’m so excited guys. I’m absolutely pumped. So good to be in the Lords…in the Lords world and to have you guys as a family and a community as well. It’s just…it’s just great I’m just relishing it. And I want to give my prayers to Margo as well fellow Aussie. She’s heading off to Africa pretty soon and just want to give my blessings to her and hope that she gets where she wants to be, and I know she’ll be leaving Australia and her sons, but God will look after you. And you know what, I feel like one day I might do the same. I’ve always wanted to go and help people and now that I’m a Christian I feel like I have the means to do so. But anyway, I’m jabbering on a bit. But thank you Jesus. You’re a bloody legend mate. And thank you all.

Hi family this it’s Soaring on Eagles Wings from Canada and it’s Friday January 22nd and I just finished listening to the DAB podcast of the day and at the end of it 2 persons called in and I’m absolutely amazed. This is…was Alyssa from Montana. She’s blind and the blind man from Ohio. They are both newcomers. They’re both so excited to be a part of our family and I am so excited to know that you both called in one after the other. And I say welcome welcome welcome. You’re going to…you’re going to join a family that will pour out such unfathomable love upon you. You won’t even begin to understand how people from the four corners of the earth could love you so much. You will experience that love from this family. And, so, I pray for you and your family. I ask the Lord to shower you with His love and His mercy and His great…His grace. And as the blind man from Ohio says, we walk by faith and not by sight. Hallelujah to that brother. And, so, I pray for you both and your family as the Lord guides you along this pathway, this journey with us. We will pray with you we’ll pray for you and we will love you. Welcome welcome welcome. Thank you for calling in and please continue to do so frequently. And know that even though you may not hear us call out your name we are praying with you and for you and we love you.

Good morning Daily Audio Bible family this is C from Mississippi and this message is for Alyssa and blind man from Ohio. I too…I’m not blind but I do have low vision due to a brain surgery of them removing a tumor that messed up…damaged my optic nerve. And yes, you guys welcome to the family. And we just want to thank Brian for just helping us, Brian and Jill, because they actually have just made a way for us for us to be closer to the Lord and just listen to His word. And just want to thank you Brian and Jill and again Alyssa and blind man from Ohio, Blind Tony and Duncan whoever’s having low vision. We just pray like Brian and thank you everybody have a good day and happy new year again. This is C from Mississippi and I just listened to the recording for today January 23rd. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Good morning DAB it is January 22nd, Friday and I just heard Alyssa from Montana. My sister I am also blind. I have only been blind, totally blind since 2015 - a freak accident at home. Before then I was legally blind but just a tiny little bit of light perception. But anyway, God has brought me through and then right after you called, by the way welcome, our brother from Ohio who is also blind, welcome to both of you. Anyway, I wanted to pray today for some of us that are struggling with children that are estranged. I myself have a brother who has a daughter who’s estranged from him and it’s going on like 4 years, 3 or 4 years. I heard Kingdom secret Daniel. I heard our brother Paul. And there was a lady who was crying. I’m sorry my sister I don’t remember…I didn’t hear your name. You called on the 15th and I just wanted to pray for those of us who are suffering with children that are estranged young adults, adult children. And I’m gonna stand in the gap as I have been for our children. I’m praying for Micah Candace your son and for unshaven Paven sister from Canada and for Kingdom Seeker Daniels children and for our brother Duane from Wisconsin, his boys. And I’ve asked you to pray for my son. So, I know that…I just want you to know that I am…

Hi this is by His Grace Sherry in Lo Roadie and today I found out that I have Covid, but Monday I found out I had breast cancer. I have three daughters 17, 19 and 22 and a husband who sometimes is there for me and sometimes he’s not. But all of my family needs to be more faithful to our Lord. And I ask that you guys pray for me to increase my faith that I can get through this. I know I’m sick and I know that’s interfering with my mood and how I’m receiving the cancer diagnosis, but I need to be strong for my girls and I need the Lord to give me strength and the devil to stop interfering with my bravery and my courage to fight this. I need them to see that God is helping me. You guys are all supporting me through this and without the Lord as our great physician we cannot…we cannot heal ourselves. Thank you. I look forward to listening day after day.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Tuesday January 26, 2021 (NIV)

Exodus 2:11-3:22

Moses Flees to Midian

11 One day, (A)when Moses had grown up, he went out to his people and looked on their (B)burdens, and he saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, one of his people.[a] 12 He looked this way and that, and seeing no one, he (C)struck down the Egyptian and hid him in the sand. 13 When (D)he went out the next day, behold, two Hebrews were struggling together. And he said to the man in the wrong, “Why do you strike your companion?” 14 He answered, (E)“Who made you a prince and a judge over us? Do you mean to kill me as you killed the Egyptian?” Then Moses was afraid, and thought, “Surely the thing is known.” 15 When Pharaoh heard of it, he sought to kill Moses. But (F)Moses fled from Pharaoh and stayed in the land of Midian. And he sat down by (G)a well.

16 Now the (H)priest of Midian had seven daughters, and (I)they came and drew water and filled the troughs to water their father's flock. 17 The shepherds came and drove them away, but Moses stood up and saved them, and (J)watered their flock. 18 When they came home to their father (K)Reuel, he said, “How is it that you have come home so soon today?” 19 They said, “An Egyptian delivered us out of the hand of the shepherds and even drew water for us and (L)watered the flock.” 20 He said to his daughters, “Then where is he? Why have you left the man? Call him, that he may (M)eat bread.” 21 And Moses was content to dwell with the man, and he gave Moses his daughter (N)Zipporah. 22 She gave birth to a son, and he called his name (O)Gershom, for he said, “I have been a (P)sojourner[b] in a foreign land.”

God Hears Israel's Groaning

23 (Q)During those many days the king of Egypt died, and the people of Israel (R)groaned because of their slavery and cried out for help. (S)Their cry for rescue from slavery came up to God. 24 And (T)God heard their groaning, and God (U)remembered his covenant with (V)Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob. 25 God (W)saw the people of Israel—and God (X)knew.

The Burning Bush

Now Moses was keeping the flock of his father-in-law, Jethro, the priest of Midian, and he led his flock to the west side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the (Y)mountain of God. (Z)And (AA)the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush. He looked, and behold, the bush was burning, yet it was not consumed. And Moses said, “I will turn aside to see this great sight, why the bush is not burned.” When the Lord saw that he turned aside to see, (AB)God called to him (AC)out of the bush, “Moses, Moses!” And he said, “Here I am.” Then he said, “Do not come near; (AD)take your sandals off your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground.” And he said, (AE)“I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” And Moses hid his face, for (AF)he was afraid to look at God.

Then the Lord said, (AG)“I have surely seen the affliction of my people who are in Egypt and have heard their cry because of their (AH)taskmasters. I know their sufferings, and (AI)I have come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians and (AJ)to bring them up out of that land to a (AK)good and broad land, a land (AL)flowing with milk and honey, to the place of (AM)the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites. And now, behold, (AN)the cry of the people of Israel has come to me, and I have also seen the (AO)oppression with which the Egyptians oppress them. 10 (AP)Come, I will send you to Pharaoh that you may bring my people, the children of Israel, out of Egypt.” 11 But Moses said to God, (AQ)“Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the children of Israel out of Egypt?” 12 He said, (AR)“But I will be with you, and this shall be the sign for you, that I have sent you: when you have brought the people out of Egypt, (AS)you shall serve God on this mountain.”

13 Then Moses said to God, “If I come to the people of Israel and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ what shall I say to them?” 14 God said to Moses, “I am who I am.”[c] And he said, “Say this to the people of Israel: (AT)I am has sent me to you.’” 15 God also said to Moses, “Say this to the people of Israel: ‘The Lord,[d] the (AU)God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you.’ This is (AV)my name forever, and thus I am to be remembered throughout all generations. 16 Go and (AW)gather the elders of Israel together and say to them, ‘The Lord, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Jacob, has appeared to me, saying, (AX)“I have observed you and what has been done to you in Egypt, 17 and I promise that (AY)I will bring you up out of the affliction of Egypt to the land of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites, a land (AZ)flowing with milk and honey.”’ 18 And (BA)they will listen to your voice, and you and the elders of Israel (BB)shall go to the king of Egypt and say to him, ‘The Lord, the God of the Hebrews, has (BC)met with us; and now, please let us go a three days' journey into the wilderness, that we may sacrifice to the Lord our God.’ 19 But I know that the king of Egypt (BD)will not let you go unless compelled (BE)by a mighty hand.[e] 20 So (BF)I will stretch out my hand and strike Egypt with (BG)all the wonders that I will do in it; (BH)after that he will let you go. 21 And (BI)I will give this people favor in the sight of the Egyptians; and when you go, you shall not go empty, 22 but each woman shall ask of her neighbor, and any woman who lives in her house, for (BJ)silver and gold jewelry, and for clothing. You shall put them on your sons and on your daughters. So (BK)you shall plunder the Egyptians.”

Matthew 17:10-27

10 And the disciples asked him, “Then why do the scribes say (A)that first Elijah must come?” 11 He answered, “Elijah does come, and (B)he will restore all things. 12 But I tell you that Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but (C)did to him whatever they pleased. (D)So also the Son of Man will certainly suffer at their hands.” 13 (E)Then the disciples understood that he was speaking to them of John the Baptist.

Jesus Heals a Boy with a Demon

14 (F)And when they came to the crowd, a man came up to him and, kneeling before him, 15 said, “Lord, have mercy on my son, for he has (G)seizures and he suffers terribly. For often he falls into the fire, and often into the water. 16 And I brought him to your disciples, and (H)they could not heal him.” 17 And Jesus answered, “O faithless and (I)twisted generation, how long am I to be with you? (J)How long am I to bear with you? Bring him here to me.” 18 And Jesus (K)rebuked the demon,[a] and it[b] came out of him, and (L)the boy was healed instantly.[c] 19 Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, “Why could we not cast it out?” 20 He said to them, (M)“Because of your little faith. For (N)truly, I say to you, (O)if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, (P)you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move, and (Q)nothing will be impossible for you.”[d]

Jesus Again Foretells Death, Resurrection

22 (R)As they were gathering[e] in Galilee, Jesus said to them, “The Son of Man is about to be delivered into the hands of men, 23 and they will kill him, and he will be raised on (S)the third day.” And they were greatly distressed.

The Temple Tax

24 (T)When they came to Capernaum, the collectors of (U)the two-drachma tax went up to Peter and said, “Does your teacher not pay the tax?” 25 He said, “Yes.” And when he came into the house, Jesus spoke to him first, saying, (V)“What do you think, Simon? From whom do kings of the earth take toll or (W)tax? From their sons or from others?” 26 And when he said, “From others,” Jesus said to him, “Then the sons are free. 27 However, not to give offense to them, go to the sea and cast a hook and take the first fish that comes up, and when you open its mouth you will find a shekel.[f] Take that and give it to them for me and for yourself.”

Psalm 22:1-18

Why Have You Forsaken Me?

To the choirmaster: according to The Doe of the Dawn. A Psalm of David.

22 (A)My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
Why are you so (B)far from saving me, from the words of my (C)groaning?
O my God, I cry by (D)day, but you do not answer,
and by night, but I find no rest.

Yet you are (E)holy,
(F)enthroned on (G)the praises[a] of Israel.
In you our fathers trusted;
they trusted, and you delivered them.
To you they (H)cried and were rescued;
in you they (I)trusted and were not put to shame.

But I am (J)a worm and not a man,
(K)scorned by mankind and (L)despised by the people.
All who see me (M)mock me;
they make mouths at me; they (N)wag their heads;
(O)“He trusts in the Lord; let him (P)deliver him;
let him rescue him, for he (Q)delights in him!”

Yet you are he who (R)took me from the womb;
you made me trust you at my mother's breasts.
10 On you was I cast from my birth,
and from (S)my mother's womb you have been my God.
11 Be not (T)far from me,
for trouble is near,
and there is (U)none to help.

12 Many bulls encompass me;
(V)strong bulls of (W)Bashan surround me;
13 they (X)open wide their mouths at me,
like a ravening and roaring lion.

14 I am (Y)poured out like water,
and all my bones are (Z)out of joint;
my (AA)heart is like (AB)wax;
it is melted within my breast;
15 my strength is (AC)dried up like a potsherd,
and my (AD)tongue sticks to my jaws;
you lay me in the dust of death.

16 For (AE)dogs encompass me;
a company of evildoers (AF)encircles me;
they have (AG)pierced my hands and feet[b]
17 I can count all my bones—
they (AH)stare and gloat over me;
18 (AI)they divide my garments among them,
and for my clothing they cast lots.

Proverbs 5:7-14

And (A)now, O sons, listen to me,
and do not depart from the words of my mouth.
Keep your way far from her,
and do not go near the door of her house,
lest you give your honor to others
and your years to the merciless,
10 lest strangers take their fill of your strength,
and your (B)labors go to the house of a foreigner,
11 and at the end of your life you (C)groan,
when your flesh and body are consumed,
12 and you say, (D)“How I hated discipline,
and my heart (E)despised reproof!
13 I did not listen to the voice of my teachers
or incline my ear to my instructors.
14 (F)I am at the brink of utter ruin
in the assembled congregation.”

In you our fathers trusted;
they trusted, and you delivered them.
To you they (H)cried and were rescued;
in you they (I)trusted and were not put to shame.

But I am (J)a worm and not a man,
(K)scorned by mankind and (L)despised by the people.
All who see me (M)mock me;
they make mouths at me; they (N)wag their heads;
(O)“He trusts in the Lord; let him (P)deliver him;
let him rescue him, for he (Q)delights in him!”

Yet you are he who (R)took me from the womb;
you made me trust you at my mother's breasts.
10 On you was I cast from my birth,
and from (S)my mother's womb you have been my God.
11 Be not (T)far from me,
for trouble is near,
and there is (U)none to help.

12 Many bulls encompass me;
(V)strong bulls of (W)Bashan surround me;
13 they (X)open wide their mouths at me,
like a ravening and roaring lion.

14 I am (Y)poured out like water,
and all my bones are (Z)out of joint;
my (AA)heart is like (AB)wax;
it is melted within my breast;
15 my strength is (AC)dried up like a potsherd,
and my (AD)tongue sticks to my jaws;
you lay me in the dust of death.

16 For (AE)dogs encompass me;
a company of evildoers (AF)encircles me;
they have (AG)pierced my hands and feet[b]
17 I can count all my bones—
they (AH)stare and gloat over me;
18 (AI)they divide my garments among them,
and for my clothing they cast lots.

Genesis 50:1-Exodus 2:10, Matthew 16:13-17:9, Psalms 21:1-13, Pr 5:1-6

Today is the 25th day of January welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I’m Brian it is a joy and an honor to be here with you today as we move into our workweek. And there’s a surprise for us today. I have a surprise for you. We’re gonna finish the first book of the Bible today. We’ll finish the book of Genesis. So, just like that we’ve move through a whole book of the Bible, a big one too. And look at all we have covered. From the origin story of creation Adam and Eve, the Tower of Babel, Noah and the flood, Abraham going into a land he didn’t know following a God he had never met and entering into a covenantal relationship. And covenants and covenantal language permeates the Bible. The son of promise, Isaac and then his son Jacob, and then his son Joseph, a lot of ground has been covered and lot to plot…to apply to our lives has been placed before us and planted in our hearts. And then so today we will finish the story of Joseph by reading the 50th chapter of Genesis, and then we’ll move in Exodus and when we get there, we’ll kind of do a little flyby and get a little kind of context of where we’re going, and then we’ll read the first couple chapters of Exodus. So, we’re reading from the English Standard Version this week. Genesis chapter 50.

Introduction to the book of Exodus:

Okay. And that concludes the book of Genesis. So, well done to us all for making it through the first full book of the Bible, which brings us now to the second book of the Bible, known as Exodus. And if we remember Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy, the first five books of the Bible are known as the Torah or the Pentateuch. So, we’re entering the second book of the Torah. And if we remember when we were talking about Genesis, we’re like really really trying to establish the fact that there’s a family line here - Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, whose Israel, and then he has children, and they are the children of Israel. That’s important because it affects the whole Bible. It’s important to know where they came from and their origin story and how everything became what it became because their story so parallels our own life journey. So, when we left the book of Genesis just now Joseph died, had made his brothers promise to bring his bones out of Egypt when they left. Now as we turn our attention to the book of Exodus, we’re moving forward several centuries. And, so, with one turn of the page hundreds of years have gone by. And, so, with the flip of a page then everybody that we’ve been traveling with has died and their progeny has flourished. And, so, we’re hundreds of years in the future now with the future generations of promise and they are still in Egypt. And as we will see their…their prosperity, their flourishing begins to make the Egyptians uneasy because they can one day outgrow them and take over. And, so, they enslave them. And what we will learn is that this slavery goes on for 400 years. So, that’s a long time to be holding onto a promise about land, right? And the oppression of the Hebrews by the Egyptians doesn’t go unnoticed. And, so, we will meet another major figure in the Bible. We’ll watch him grow up. And he has a very interesting childhood. We’ll watch them flee Egypt. We’ll watch him return from Egypt to set God’s people free and his name is Moses. So, basically in Exodus we’ll meet Moses’s, we’ll see the plight of the Hebrew people, we’ll watch Moses become the leader of these people and we’ll watch a very drama filled confrontation between God and Egypt and in particular the king of Egypt the Pharaoh. Eventually, God’s people will be freed from their slavery and sort of the center part of Exodus will deal with their trials in the desert. And then as we move into the last part of Exodus God will begin to weave His story into the fabric of this new culture. These recently freed slaves are in the desert and God is establishing a completely new culture in the desert among them and He will be weaving Himself into everything that they do. And we’ll see things like the tabernacle and the way that sacrifices are to be given to God. And, so, what we’re watching is God culture making. And we get to sit on the front row and watch it happen. And, so, let’s begin. Exodus chapter 1

Commentary:

Okay. So, we’ve already transitioned from Genesis to Exodus and talked about that.

Let’s look at one thing and Jesus says in the book of Matthew today because it’s really famous. “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul or what shall a man give in return for his soul?” So, this is obviously the call to the path of a disciple of Jesus Christ. Like this is Jesus saying what it’s gonna take. “If you want to come after me deny yourself, take up your cross and follow me.” Let’s stop there and talk about deny yourself and take up your cross and follow Jesus. That seems to be the precursor of one of the greatest most pervasive themes of the Bible – endurance. And we don’t like to hear about it and we don’t like to do it that well. And, so, we don’t hear about it a lot. And if we can avoid it, we do. And yet, Jesus is saying yeah, the life following me is a life where you’re denying the false identity that you are trying to craft and build. You’re denying yourself and you’re taking up your cross and following me. You’re taking on my identity. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. And that’s famous. And, so, we…we think of it in terms of like being willing to die for the cause of Christ, to become a martyr. And, indeed, that has been required of many brothers and sisters over the millennia, but it’s deeper than this. It’s not just a willingness to humanly die, it’s the act of dying to yourself, taking up your cross and following Him. In other words, dying to yourself so that you can actually live for Christ. Later in the New Testament when we get to the letters of Paul, we will hear Paul describe it as a living sacrifice. Okay. So, that’s kind of the lay of the land. If you want to be a disciple of Jesus then your identity isn’t a worldly crafted thing, it’s the identity of the child of the most-high God, a disciple of Christ, and you will have to participate in the act of endurance often. We’re still kind of at the beginning of the year. I…mean it’s not my favorite thing to talk about, endurance. The Bible just brings it up over and over and over and over. And I have over the years, I’ve thought, “why? Like, why can’t your yoke be easy and your burden light? Like, we like those kinds of scriptures better.” But I have come to realize that endurance isn’t the absence of God’s blessing. Endurance is actually evidence of God’s blessing. Think about it. Think about your life. What have the greatest lessons that you have ever learned come through? Challenge, endurance, something that you had to see through, something that you had to stick with. This is how we grow. And Jesus, God made flesh is telling us that this is a part of following Him. In other words, this is a part of how it’s supposed to go. So, we’ve got a reframe some things and rewire some things because none of us likes to go through difficulty and challenge and most of the time we wallow in it, we get stuck in it, we dig a hole there, we camp out there when we’re supposed to move through it and gain strength and wisdom and keep going. But just normally, we get mad at God, and walk away and get rebellious and act like a toddler and only to find that we missed…we…like it took so much longer than it had to take. And we missed so much that we just misunderstood that “I am apparently going into a season of endurance here, of challenge and obstacle. And, yeah, I’m gonna still hate it. It’s not fun.” But it is also not a waste of time. It’s not without purpose. And Jesus is telling us this right out of the gate. And then He something interesting. “What will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul?” In other words if we could have a life of ease and get everything that we wanted but we’d lost our identity, we got sucked into creating a false identity because of all the stuff that we have achieved and all of the stuff that we have and we thought that this is who we are and we lost the plot of the story that we are a child of the most-high, then in the end, what does that profit a person? It’s a pile of stuff. It may be cool stuff, but it’s a pile of stuff. Hundred years from now nobody’s gonna care about any of that stuff except for maybe antique dealers. And, so, let’s pour that into our coffee and stir it around today and keep it with us. Endurance is unfortunately my friends, a part of the journey. Endurance, fortunately my friends is a part of the journey. This is how we grow. Let’s just bring it really close. Let’s pretend we decided that today is the last day we’re going to go through the Bible in community and we step off this train, we don’t go any further, we don’t endure until the end, we don’t maintain the rhythm until the end, we are going to lose so much that God will gift us through His word. But those of us who stick it out show up every day and continue to show up every day, week by week, month by month, we’re going to see transformation in our lives. And this is about the time where were starting to think about, maybe not doing the New Year’s resolutions anymore. Like, yeah, salad’s getting’ old and all the stuff that goes with it. And then there’s all the temptations all around us to just jump off the wagon of health. And, so, we do. We’re like just this once. And then it becomes the trajectory that we head in. And, so, we can get to the year…end of the year having had wonderful goals for the year that we didn’t endure and so we didn’t achieve. If we want to achieve being a disciple of Jesus, then we’re gonna have to deny ourselves and take up our cross and follow Him.

Prayer:

Jesus, we enter into that. We invite Your Holy Spirit into that to apply it to our lives in places that need attention in this area right now. But we also acknowledge, You’re not asking for something You didn’t model. Like You’re not demanding something that You didn’t show how it’s done and explain it. And we have all these kinds of ideas about what it is to deny ourselves and take up our cross and follow You when at the end of the day this really does boil down to what is driving us. How is it that we are trying to achieve an identity? What is making us continue forward on any given path? What we have to do is lay down anything that’s not a path that pursues You. The things that distract us or the things that pull us away, what does that profit us? Help us to see that clearly Holy Spirit, we pray. In the name of Jesus, we ask. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hi this is Amy calling from the center of Canada. I…I’m lying awake in bed again, another sleepless night. I suffer from insomnia and it’s exasperated my…by my depression. I also have type one diabetes and have been unemployed for almost a year now. I feel like I have a lot on my plate. And the thing that I can’t stop thinking about and I feel almost obsessive about at this point is finding a partner, a husband. I feel really feel really lonely and I’m…I feel angry that God has let me have this strong desire for my whole life that I have not been able to get rid of or fulfill. And I know it’s not up to me but it’s really hard for me to let go of trying to do all the right things and go on the dating apps and it all feels so empty.

Hello, Daily Audio Bible this is Duane from Wisconsin. All praise and glory to our wonderful Lord and savior Jesus Christ. Today is January 21st. Yes, I’ve been away for a bit. I am calling in for God’s Smile and then there was a gentleman who called in and he said he only has apparently a few months to live. He has cancer and I apologize I can’t remember your name, but you wanted us to pray for you. So, Lord we lift up God’s Smile and this gentleman who was told that he doesn’t have long on this earth. He’s battling cancer. Be with God’s Smile Lord. We ask for Your comfort and peace. She is such a joy for us Lord and the peace she gives us, we are asking that You would give her that piece, the piece that she…that flows through her from You to us Lord, we’re now asking You would allow it to flow from us to her and that she would get the rest she needs and the strength she needs to carry on and be a light for You as she is. We ask that You be with this gentleman who’s battling cancer who has a wife and children Lord. She’s no help at the moment and she said that the home health hasn’t kicked in. And she’s alone. So, I don’t know your name dear lady, but I’d like to pray for you. Father God, we as a community, we wrap our owns around this lady and we ask that You would breathe and surround her with Your love not that Your love is never there but Father would You whip it up, would You whip that love up so that it is felt and seen. May she hear You as she reads Your word. And Father when this home health kicks in, I ask dear Lord, I ask because I can come to You and ask these things that this home help would be more than just a help, she would become a friend. And could I go as far to ask dear Lord that You would give her a Christian lady? Wouldn’t that be just wonderful? Father I don’t know if she has a church, but I pray the church around her would support her. Time’s ticking away. I send you my love and a kiss. Kiss kiss. Love you all.

Hi family this is Biola from Maryland I hope you’re all doing well. Brian and Jill God bless you. God bless your ministry. We’re looking forward to China’s little baby. Well, I pray that God will continue to touch her and protect her. Family today is January 22nd. Today would have been my father’s birthday. He went home to be with the Lord in 2016 September 20. So, I just want to ask for prayer especially for my mom who is still grieving his death that God would just uphold her and be with her Jesus’ name. A listener from Montana, oh my gosh sister. I listened to your message like two or three times. I was so intrigued and convicted by what you said. Sister, you have such a sweet spirit. I am so happy that you found Daily Audio Bible. You know it is because of new listeners like you that I am proud to give to Daily Audio Bible. It is ministry worth sewing into. Sister I pray that God will continue to let you experience His joy. I can…I can tell from your voice that joy in spite of the blindness I am thanking God for your life and for your sweet 2-year-old and for your husband and for your marriage and I pray that God will continue to just wrap His arms around you and just show you His love intangible ways in the name of Jesus. And then I’m also praying for the brother who called in and said he was blind, and he just found Daily Audio Bible app. Oh wonderful brother. I pray that as…__ word is you walk by faith not by sight that God will show you different things in your life and He will answer your prayers. Before you call He will answer in the name of Jesus. Now Sarah from London I am praying for you sister that God will touch you He will continue to wrap His arms around you He will make your heart for Him. You will have a heart that follows hard after Him in Jesus…

This is Chili from Florida and I’m calling in for an urgent prayer request. I’ve had some heart issues for quite a while and now I’m in the…the hospital. You know chest pains and just really scared right now. Trying to have faith and trust in the Lord that His hands of healing will heal and touch my body and get me through this. It’s just…it’s just a scary time, you know, ‘cause I did have to also confess to my wife of a sin. I sinned against her recently. So, my hearts also broken. So, I just really need prayer with you guys 'cause I’m just scared right now. Thank you guys I love you very much and I’ve been with this group for years…

Hi Daily Audio Bible this is Abba’s Joy. It’s been a while since I’ve called in but first, I just want to say I’m so excited because I read through the entire Bible with you all last year and it’s been something that I’ve wanted to do for so long, so many years as a believer. And I finally did it and it was life changing. It was a huge blessing and to be able to do it with you guys was just amazing. But I wanted to call in because I wanted to share something. After listening to the wonderful message from yesterday I went back and read the entry in the God of Your Atory and if you don’t have it I encourage you to go get it. So, one thing Brian wrote that was profound to me in my current situation. After all that Joseph had to endure which was not by choice or because of anything he did when he saw his brothers he observed. He could have easily spoken what his flesh may have been feeling or even acted on it but like Brian says in his distress he didn’t even reveal himself. He goes on to say to slow down and be observant. My biggest challenge right now DAB community is navigating adolescence with my teenage son. He loves the Lord with all of his heart and has been raised in the word but there’s a lot happening that overwhelms an exhaust’s my heart. And anyway, Brian helped me to see that I don’t have to reveal myself in my distress I just need to just slow down and sometimes just observe the situation because I don’t even know where my son’s heart may be at the time. And responding in my distress will only provoke him and escalate both of our emotions. So, for those parents in the same boat as I am trying to raise godly teenagers in the midst of a…of everything that’s going on with all these distractions I encourage…

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Monday January 25, 2021 (NIV)

Genesis 50:1 - Exodus 2:10

50 Then Joseph (A)fell on his father's face and wept over him and kissed him. And Joseph commanded his servants the physicians to (B)embalm his father. So the physicians embalmed Israel. Forty days were required for it, for that is how many are required for embalming. And the Egyptians (C)wept for him seventy days.

And when the days of weeping for him were past, Joseph spoke to the household of Pharaoh, saying, (D)“If now I have found favor in your eyes, please speak in the ears of Pharaoh, saying, ‘My father made me swear, saying, “I am about to die: in my tomb (E)that I hewed out for myself in the land of Canaan, there shall you bury me.” Now therefore, let me please go up and bury my father. Then I will return.’” And Pharaoh answered, “Go up, and bury your father, as he made you swear.” So Joseph went up to bury his father. With him went up all the servants of Pharaoh, the elders of his household, and all the elders of the land of Egypt, as well as all the household of Joseph, his brothers, and his father's household. Only their children, their flocks, and their herds were left (F)in the land of Goshen. And there went up with him both chariots and horsemen. It was a very great company. 10 When they came to the threshing floor of Atad, which is beyond the Jordan, (G)they lamented there with a very great and grievous lamentation, and he (H)made a mourning for his father seven days. 11 When the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, saw the mourning on the threshing floor of Atad, they said, “This is a grievous mourning by the Egyptians.” Therefore the place was named Abel-mizraim;[a] it is beyond the Jordan. 12 Thus his sons did for him as he had commanded them, 13 for (I)his sons carried him to the land of Canaan and buried him in the cave of the field at Machpelah, to the east of Mamre, which Abraham (J)bought with the field from Ephron the Hittite to possess as a burying place. 14 After he had buried his father, Joseph returned to Egypt with his brothers and all who had gone up with him to bury his father.

God's Good Purposes

15 When Joseph's brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, “It may be that Joseph will hate us and pay us back for all the evil that we did to him.” 16 So they sent a message to Joseph, saying, “Your father gave this command before he died: 17 ‘Say to Joseph, “Please forgive the transgression of your brothers and their sin, because they did evil to you.”’ And now, please forgive the transgression of the servants of (K)the God of your father.” Joseph wept when they spoke to him. 18 His brothers also came and (L)fell down before him and said, “Behold, we are your servants.” 19 But Joseph said to them, “Do not fear, for (M)am I in the place of God? 20 As for you, you meant evil against me, but (N)God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people[b] should be kept alive, as they are today. 21 So do not fear; (O)I will provide for you and your little ones.” Thus he comforted them and spoke kindly to them.

The Death of Joseph

22 So Joseph remained in Egypt, he and his father's house. Joseph lived 110 years. 23 And Joseph saw Ephraim's children (P)of the third generation. The (Q)children also of Machir the son of Manasseh were (R)counted as Joseph's own.[c] 24 And Joseph said to his brothers, “I am about to die, but (S)God will visit you and bring you up out of this land to the land (T)that he swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.” 25 Then (U)Joseph made the sons of Israel swear, saying, “God will surely visit you, and you shall carry up my bones from here.” 26 So Joseph died, being 110 years old. They (V)embalmed him, and he was put in a coffin in Egypt.

Israel Increases Greatly in Egypt

(W)These are the names of the sons of Israel who came to Egypt with Jacob, each with his household: Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah, Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin, Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher. All the descendants of Jacob were (X)seventy persons; Joseph was already in Egypt. Then (Y)Joseph died, and all his brothers and all that generation. (Z)But the people of Israel were fruitful and increased greatly; they multiplied and grew exceedingly strong, so that the land was filled with them.

Pharaoh Oppresses Israel

Now there arose a new king over Egypt, (AA)who did not know Joseph. And he said to his people, “Behold, (AB)the people of Israel are too many and too mighty for us. 10 (AC)Come, (AD)let us deal shrewdly with them, lest they multiply, and, if war breaks out, they join our enemies and fight against us and escape from the land.” 11 Therefore they set taskmasters over them (AE)to afflict them with heavy (AF)burdens. They built for Pharaoh (AG)store cities, Pithom and (AH)Raamses. 12 But the more they were oppressed, the more they multiplied and the more they spread abroad. And the Egyptians were in dread of the people of Israel. 13 So they ruthlessly made the people of Israel (AI)work as slaves 14 and (AJ)made their lives bitter with hard service, in mortar and brick, and in all kinds of work in the field. In all their work they ruthlessly made them work as slaves.

15 Then the king of Egypt said to the Hebrew midwives, one of whom was named Shiphrah and the other Puah, 16 “When you serve as midwife to the Hebrew women and see them on the birthstool, if it is a son, you shall kill him, but if it is a daughter, she shall live.” 17 But the midwives (AK)feared God and did not do as the king of Egypt commanded them, but let the male children live. 18 So the king of Egypt called the midwives and said to them, “Why have you done this, and let the male children live?” 19 The midwives said to Pharaoh, “Because the Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women, for they are vigorous and give birth before the midwife comes to them.” 20 (AL)So God dealt well with the midwives. And the people multiplied and grew very strong. 21 And because the midwives feared God, (AM)he gave them families. 22 Then Pharaoh commanded all his people, (AN)“Every son that is born to the Hebrews[d] you shall cast into (AO)the Nile, but you shall let every daughter live.”

The Birth of Moses

Now a (AP)man from the house of Levi went and took as his wife a Levite woman. The woman conceived and bore a son, and (AQ)when she saw that he was a fine child, she hid him three months. When she could hide him no longer, she took for him a basket made of bulrushes[e] and daubed it with bitumen and pitch. She put the child in it and placed it among the (AR)reeds by the river bank. And (AS)his sister stood at a distance to know what would be done to him. Now the daughter of Pharaoh came down to bathe at the river, while her young women walked beside the river. She saw the basket among the reeds and sent her servant woman, and she took it. When she opened it, she saw the child, and behold, the baby was crying. She took pity on him and said, “This is one of the Hebrews' children.” Then his sister said to Pharaoh's daughter, “Shall I go and call you a nurse from the Hebrew women to nurse the child for you?” And Pharaoh's daughter said to her, “Go.” So the girl went and called the child's mother. And Pharaoh's daughter said to her, “Take this child away and nurse him for me, and I will give you your wages.” So the woman took the child and nursed him. 10 When the child grew older, she brought him to Pharaoh's daughter, and he became (AT)her son. She named him Moses, “Because,” she said, “I (AU)drew him out of the water.”[f]

Matthew 16:13-17:9

Peter Confesses Jesus as the Christ

13 (A)Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” 14 And they said, “Some say (B)John the Baptist, others say (C)Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” 15 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” 16 Simon Peter replied, (D)“You are (E)the Christ, (F)the Son of (G)the living God.” 17 And Jesus answered him, (H)“Blessed are you, (I)Simon Bar-Jonah! For (J)flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, (K)but my Father who is in heaven. 18 And I tell you, (L)you are Peter, and (M)on this rock[a] I will build my church, and (N)the gates of (O)hell[b] shall not prevail against it. 19 I will give you (P)the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and (Q)whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed[c] in heaven.” 20 (R)Then he strictly charged the disciples to tell no one that he was the Christ.

Jesus Foretells His Death and Resurrection

21 (S)From that time Jesus began to show his disciples that (T)he must go to Jerusalem and (U)suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on (V)the third day be raised. 22 And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, “Far be it from you, Lord![d] This shall never happen to you.” 23 But he turned and said to Peter, (W)“Get behind me, Satan! You are (X)a hindrance[e] to me. For you (Y)are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.”

Take Up Your Cross and Follow Jesus

24 Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him (Z)deny himself and (AA)take up his cross and follow me. 25 For (AB)whoever would save his life[f] will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. 26 For (AC)what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or (AD)what shall a man give in return for his soul? 27 (AE)For the Son of Man is going to come with (AF)his angels in the glory of his Father, and (AG)then he will repay each person according to what he has done. 28 Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not (AH)taste death (AI)until they see the Son of Man (AJ)coming in his kingdom.”

The Transfiguration

17 (AK)And after six days Jesus took with him (AL)Peter and James, and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And he was (AM)transfigured before them, and (AN)his face shone like the sun, and (AO)his clothes became white as light. And behold, there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him. And Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good that we are here. If you wish, I will make three tents here, one for you and one for Moses and one for (AP)Elijah.” He was still speaking when, behold, (AQ)a bright cloud overshadowed them, and (AR)a voice from the cloud said, (AS)“This is my beloved Son,[g] with whom I am well pleased; (AT)listen to him.” When (AU)the disciples heard this, (AV)they fell on their faces and were terrified. But Jesus came and (AW)touched them, saying, “Rise, and (AX)have no fear.” And when they lifted up their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus only.

(AY)And as they were coming down the mountain, Jesus commanded them, (AZ)“Tell no one the vision, until the Son of Man is raised from the dead.”

Psalm 21

The King Rejoices in the Lord's Strength

To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David.

21 O Lord, in your (A)strength the king rejoices,
and in your (B)salvation how greatly he exults!
You have (C)given him his heart's desire
and have not withheld the request of his lips. Selah
For you (D)meet him with rich blessings;
you set (E)a crown of (F)fine gold upon his head.
He asked life of you; you (G)gave it to him,
(H)length of days forever and ever.
His (I)glory is great through your salvation;
(J)splendor and majesty you bestow on him.
For you make him most blessed forever;[a]
you make him glad with the (K)joy of your presence.
For the king trusts in the Lord,
and through the steadfast love of the Most High he shall not be (L)moved.

Your hand will (M)find out all your enemies;
your right hand will find out those who hate you.
You will make them as (N)a blazing oven
when you appear.
The Lord will swallow them up in his (O)wrath,
and (P)fire will consume them.
10 You (Q)will destroy their (R)descendants from the earth,
and their offspring from among the children of man.
11 Though they plan evil against you,
though they (S)devise mischief, they will not succeed.
12 For you will put them (T)to flight;
you will (U)aim at their faces with your bows.

13 Be exalted, O Lord, in your strength!
We will sing and praise your power.

Proverbs 5:1-6

Warning Against Adultery

(A)My son, be attentive to my wisdom;
(B)incline your ear to my understanding,
that you may keep (C)discretion,
and your lips may (D)guard knowledge.
For the lips of (E)a forbidden[a] woman drip honey,
and her speech[b] is (F)smoother than oil,
but in the end she is (G)bitter as (H)wormwood,
(I)sharp as (J)a two-edged sword.
Her feet (K)go down to death;
her steps follow the path to[c] Sheol;
she (L)does not ponder the path of life;
her ways wander, and she does not know it.

Genesis 48:1-49:33, Matthew 15:29-16:12, Psalms 20:1-9, Proverbs 4:20-27

Today is the 24th day of January welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I’m Brian it is so awesome, it is truly a privilege to be here with you today as we…we reach out and turn the knob and open up the threshold and step into a brand new shiny sparkly week. It’s all new, it’s all before us. And we remind ourselves of this so often because it’s so important. This is a new week. It’s a new start. We haven’t messed this week up yet and we get to choose how we’re gonna live it. And, so, let’s keep that before us as we step into this perfect new week where nothing has happened yet. And let’s take a first step into this week by going into the Scriptures together. We’ll read from the English Standard Version this week. Genesis chapter 48 and 49 today.

Prayer:

Thank You, Father for Your word. And as we greet this new week, we take heart what You’re saying in the Proverbs, that we should keep our hearts with all vigilance because the springs of life flow from our hearts. This is so important for us. So, we take a moment just to consider that because our hearts have been broken Father. So many times, so many pieces of our hearts have been lost along the way. And yet, as we find in the Scriptures, we are to love You with all of our heart, and we confess we don’t have our hearts. We don’t have them all, they’ve been fragmented. We’re not wholehearted about anything. We’ve been broken. We didn’t achieve this all along, that we should guard our hearts with everything that we have because life springs from it. And yet You are the healer of the brokenhearted. And, so, as we move toward the conclusion of our first month we would like to hold on to this over these coming days, opening our brokenness to You, not hiding it, not trying to protect it, but actually trusting You with it, that…that You are the healer of the brokenhearted. Give us our hearts back that we might be vigilant about them going forward understanding that indeed the issues of life spring forth from our hearts. Heal us God we pray. In the name of Jesus, we ask. Amen.

dailyaudiobible.com is the website and its home base for a virtual community like ours. It’s where the Global Campfire is burning. And the Daily Audio Bible app, same thing. You can access all the stuff using the app as well. So, check it out. Check out the Community section. Check out the Prayer Wall. Check out the Shop. There are resources there that just kind of continue to draw us into the journey that we are on as we take a year to move through the Scriptures together. So, check that out.

If you want to partner with the Daily Audio Bible, you can do that at dailyaudiobible.com. I thank you. If what’s happening here is making a difference to you then thank you for making a difference back. We wouldn’t be here. None of this would be happening if there weren’t a Global Campfire. If we were not in this together throwing logs on keeping it burning we wouldn’t have this. And, so, thank you for your partnership. So, there’s a link on the homepage. If you’re using the app you can press the Give button. That’s in the upper right-hand corner or the mailing address is PO Box 1996 Spring Hill Tennessee 37174.

Genesis 48-49

Jacob Blesses Ephraim and Manasseh

48 After this, Joseph was told, “Behold, your father is ill.” So he took with him his two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim. And it was told to Jacob, “Your son Joseph has come to you.” Then Israel summoned his strength and sat up in bed. And Jacob said to Joseph, (A)“God Almighty[a] appeared to me at (B)Luz in the land of Canaan and blessed me, and said to me, ‘Behold, I will make you fruitful and multiply you, and I will make of you a company of peoples and will give this land to your offspring after you (C)for an everlasting possession.’ And now your (D)two sons, who were born to you in the land of Egypt before I came to you in Egypt, (E)are mine; Ephraim and Manasseh shall be mine, as Reuben and Simeon are. And the children that you fathered after them shall be yours. They shall be called by the name of their brothers in their inheritance. As for me, when I came from Paddan, to my sorrow (F)Rachel died in the land of Canaan on the way, when there was still some distance[b] to go to Ephrath, and I buried her there on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem).”

When Israel saw Joseph's sons, he said, “Who are these?” Joseph said to his father, (G)“They are my sons, whom God has given me here.” And he said, “Bring them to me, please, that (H)I may bless them.” 10 Now (I)the eyes of Israel were dim with age, so that he could not see. So Joseph brought them near him, (J)and he kissed them and embraced them. 11 And Israel said to Joseph, (K)“I never expected to see your face; and behold, God has let me see your offspring also.” 12 Then Joseph removed them from his knees, and he bowed himself with his face to the earth. 13 And Joseph took them both, Ephraim in his right hand toward Israel's left hand, and Manasseh in his left hand toward Israel's right hand, and brought them near him. 14 (L)And Israel stretched out his right hand and laid it on the head of Ephraim, who was the younger, and his left hand on the head of Manasseh, (M)crossing his hands (for Manasseh was the firstborn). 15 And he blessed Joseph and said,

“The God (N)before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac walked,
the God who has been my shepherd all my life long to this day,
16 (O)the angel who has (P)redeemed me from all evil, bless the boys;
and in them let (Q)my name be carried on, and the name of my fathers Abraham and Isaac;
and let them (R)grow into a multitude[c] in the midst of the earth.”

17 When Joseph saw that his father (S)laid his right hand on the head of Ephraim, it displeased him, and he took his father's hand to move it from Ephraim's head to Manasseh's head. 18 And Joseph said to his father, “Not this way, my father; since this one is the firstborn, put your right hand on his head.” 19 But his father refused and said, (T)“I know, my son, I know. He also shall become a people, and he also shall be great. Nevertheless, (U)his younger brother shall be greater than he, and his offspring shall become a multitude[d] of nations.” 20 So he blessed them that day, saying,

“By you Israel will pronounce blessings, saying,
(V)‘God make you as Ephraim and as Manasseh.’”

Thus he put Ephraim before Manasseh. 21 Then Israel said to Joseph, “Behold, I am about to die, but (W)God will be with you and will bring you again to the land of your fathers. 22 Moreover, I have given to (X)you rather than to your brothers one mountain slope[e] that I took from the hand of the Amorites with my sword and with my bow.”

Jacob Blesses His Sons

49 (Y)Then Jacob called his sons and said, “Gather yourselves together, that I may tell you what shall happen to you (Z)in days to come.

“Assemble and listen, O sons of Jacob,
listen to Israel your father.

“Reuben, you are (AA)my firstborn,
my might, and the (AB)firstfruits of my strength,
preeminent in dignity and preeminent in power.
Unstable as water, you shall not have preeminence,
because you (AC)went up to your father's bed;
then you defiled it—he went up to my couch!

(AD)“Simeon and Levi are brothers;
weapons (AE)of violence are their swords.
Let my soul come not into their council;
(AF)O my glory, (AG)be not joined to their company.
For in their anger they killed men,
and in their willfulness they (AH)hamstrung oxen.
Cursed be their anger, for it is fierce,
and their wrath, for it is cruel!
I will (AI)divide them in Jacob
and scatter them in Israel.

“Judah, (AJ)your brothers shall praise you;
(AK)your hand shall be on the neck of your enemies;
(AL)your father's sons shall bow down before you.
Judah is (AM)a lion's cub;
from the prey, my son, you have gone up.
(AN)He stooped down; he crouched as a lion
and as a lioness; who dares rouse him?
10 The (AO)scepter shall not depart from Judah,
nor the ruler's staff (AP)from between his feet,
until tribute comes to him;[f]
and to him shall be the obedience of the peoples.
11 Binding his foal to the vine
and his donkey's colt to the choice vine,
he has washed his garments in wine
and his vesture in the blood of grapes.
12 His (AQ)eyes are darker than wine,
and his teeth whiter than milk.

13 (AR)“Zebulun shall dwell at the (AS)shore of the sea;
he shall become a haven for ships,
and his border shall be at Sidon.

14 (AT)“Issachar is a strong donkey,
crouching between the sheepfolds.[g]
15 He saw that a resting place was good,
and that the land was pleasant,
so he bowed his shoulder to bear,
and (AU)became a servant at forced labor.

16 (AV)“Dan shall (AW)judge his people
as one of the tribes of Israel.
17 Dan (AX)shall be a serpent in the way,
a viper by the path,
that bites the horse's heels
so that his rider falls backward.
18 I (AY)wait for your salvation, O Lord.

19 (AZ)“Raiders shall raid (BA)Gad,[h]
but he shall raid at their heels.

20 (BB)“Asher's food shall be rich,
and he shall yield royal delicacies.

21 (BC)“Naphtali is a doe let loose
that bears beautiful fawns.[i]

22 “Joseph is (BD)a fruitful bough,
a fruitful bough by a spring;
his branches run over the wall.[j]
23 The archers (BE)bitterly attacked him,
shot at him, and harassed him severely,
24 yet (BF)his bow remained unmoved;
his arms[k] were made agile
by the hands of the (BG)Mighty One of Jacob
(from there is (BH)the Shepherd,[l] (BI)the Stone of Israel),
25 (BJ)by the God of your father who will help you,
by (BK)the Almighty[m] (BL)who will bless you
with blessings of heaven above,
blessings of the deep that crouches beneath,
blessings of the breasts and of the womb.
26 The blessings of your father
are mighty beyond the blessings of my parents,
up to the bounties (BM)of the everlasting hills.[n]
May they be (BN)on the head of Joseph,
and on the brow of him who was set apart from his brothers.

27 (BO)“Benjamin is a ravenous wolf,
in the morning devouring the prey
and at evening (BP)dividing the spoil.”

Jacob's Death and Burial

28 All these are the twelve tribes of Israel. This is what their father said to them as he blessed them, blessing each with the blessing suitable to him. 29 Then he commanded them and said to them, “I am to be (BQ)gathered to my people; (BR)bury me with my fathers (BS)in the cave that is in the field of Ephron the Hittite, 30 in the cave that is in the field at Machpelah, to the east of Mamre, in the land of Canaan, (BT)which Abraham bought with the field from Ephron the Hittite to possess as a burying place. 31 (BU)There they buried Abraham and Sarah his wife. There (BV)they buried Isaac and Rebekah his wife, and there I buried Leah— 32 the field and the cave that is in it were bought from the Hittites.” 33 When Jacob finished commanding his sons, he drew up his feet into the bed and breathed his last and (BW)was gathered to his people.

Matthew 15:29-16:12

Jesus Heals Many

29 (A)Jesus went on from there and walked (B)beside the Sea of Galilee. And he (C)went up on the mountain and sat down there. 30 And great crowds came to him, bringing with them (D)the lame, the blind, the crippled, the mute, and many others, and they put them at his feet, and he healed them, 31 (E)so that the crowd wondered, when they saw the mute speaking, (F)the crippled healthy, the lame walking, and the blind seeing. And (G)they glorified (H)the God of Israel.

Jesus Feeds the Four Thousand

32 (I)Then Jesus called his disciples to him and said, (J)“I have compassion on the crowd because they have been with me now three days and have nothing to eat. And I am unwilling to send them away hungry, lest they faint on the way.” 33 And the disciples said to him, “Where are we to get enough bread in such a desolate place to feed so great a crowd?” 34 And Jesus said to them, “How many loaves do you have?” They said, (K)“Seven, and a few small fish.” 35 And directing the crowd to sit down on the ground, 36 he took the seven loaves and the fish, and (L)having given thanks he broke them and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. 37 And (M)they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up seven baskets full of the broken pieces left over. 38 Those who ate were four thousand men, besides women and children. 39 And after sending away the crowds, he got into the boat and went to the region of (N)Magadan.

The Pharisees and Sadducees Demand Signs

16 (O)And the Pharisees and Sadducees came, and (P)to test him (Q)they asked him to show them (R)a sign from heaven. He answered them,[a] (S)“When it is evening, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red.’ And in the morning, ‘It will be stormy today, for the sky is red and threatening.’ (T)You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret (U)the signs of the times. (V)An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.” So (W)he left them and departed.

The Leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees

When the disciples reached the other side, they had forgotten to bring any bread. Jesus said to them, “Watch and (X)beware of (Y)the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” And they began discussing it among themselves, saying, “We brought no bread.” But (Z)Jesus, aware of this, said, (AA)“O you of little faith, why are you discussing among yourselves the fact that you have no bread? (AB)Do you not yet perceive? Do you not remember (AC)the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many baskets you gathered? 10 Or (AD)the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many baskets you gathered? 11 How is it that you fail to understand that I did not speak about bread? (AE)Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” 12 (AF)Then they understood that he did not tell them to beware of the leaven of bread, but of (AG)the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

Psalm 20

Trust in the Name of the Lord Our God

To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David.

20 May the Lord (A)answer you in the day of trouble!
May (B)the name of the God of Jacob (C)protect you!
May he send you help from (D)the sanctuary
and give you support from (E)Zion!
May he (F)remember all your offerings
and regard with favor your burnt sacrifices! Selah

May he (G)grant you your heart's desire
and fulfill all your plans!
May we shout for joy over (H)your salvation,
and in the name of our God set up our (I)banners!
May the Lord fulfill all your petitions!

Now I know that the Lord saves his anointed;
he will answer him from his holy heaven
with (J)the saving might of his right hand.
Some trust in (K)chariots and some in (L)horses,
(M)but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.
They collapse and fall,
but we rise and stand upright.

O Lord, save (N)the king!
May he answer us when we call.

Genesis 46:1-47:31, Matthew 15:1-28, Psalms 19:1-14, Proverbs 4:14-19

Today is the 23rd day of January welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I am Brian it is great to be here with you today as we bring to a close another week. And there are 52 of those, but we’ve already move through a couple, actually three. So, look at how time flies. 49 more weeks and we’ll be at the end of another year. And it’s great to know that we we’ll be doing that together as we continue our journey through the Scriptures. So, we’re in the book of Genesis, we have been following along with the story of Joseph. And not to be redundant, but it’s important to kinda remember this family that we are examining because they affect so much of the Bible. Abraham, Isaac, who was Abraham’s son, and Jacob who was Isaac’s son. And Jacob’s name was changed to Israel and then he had children and those of the children of Israel. And this story of Joseph that we’re following along with is one of those sons of Israel. And Jacob or Israel hadn’t seen his son Joseph in decades literally believing that he was dead for decades. And, so, we have kind of a resurrection moment happening. Genesis chapter 46 and 47 today. And we’re reading from the New International Version this week.

Commentary:

Okay. So, as we bring this week to a close, we look back into the book of Genesis, and we’ve been following this Joseph story and finally Joseph and his father Israel or Jacob are reunited, and it is a beautiful beautiful beautiful scene. And, so, the children of Israel 70 in all according to the Scriptures as they start out in Egypt have moved to Egypt. We have some ground to cover, but this is how the children of Israel got to Egypt. And as the Bible has already alluded to, they prospered there. They increase in number is there. They actually grow into a great nation there, but they will also be enslaved there. And we’re gonna spend 400 years in Egypt and then we will meet the next person that we are going to be traveling with and his name will be Moses.

Then we turn into the book of Matthew today and Jesus quotes the prophet Isaiah, “these people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.” That prophecy spoken from Jesus from Isaiah really is the plot of the ministry of Jesus in so many ways. He’s trying to call the truth out in people’s lives and the truth is borne out in how they conduct themselves not in what they say. Because what they say or sad and had led into great hypocrisy and control in all kinds of…well…all kinds of hiding, echoes back from Genesis chapter 3 - naked and ashamed. And that’s how humanity came out of that and hiding ever since, putting a false front out there while the truth remains hidden in the darkness of their hearts. Jesus is calling out the truth. He’s saying like, “let’s unite what you say with who you are not who you pretend to be. Then you can be true. Then you will have eyes to see and ears to hear that the kingdom of heaven is among you now.” So, that can help us understand the trajectory of Jesus ministry, butit should…it’s no less relevant right now. This culture around the world that we live in, the world, the world that we live in is naked and ashamed and hiding. We are all trying to present a perfect version of ourselves, but it is exhausting. Why don’t we just relax and be made perfect for real so that we don’t have to hide naked and ashamed so that we can be true and reveal the kingdom of heaven that is among us.

Prayer:

Jesus, we invite You into that. We’re certainly not done talking about these kinds of things because in the Scriptures You are certainly not done talking about these kinds of things. And, so, as we follow along in the Scriptures it’s like we are following along in Your ministry. We are walking alongside You. We are drinking up every word that You say. Holy Spirit plant these words in the soil of our lives. We want to move toward springtime. Even though that seems a ways away, we want to move toward springtime and see this new life that we are planting right now begin to poke up in our lives so that we might begin to see that we actually are being transformed, that the way we think about things and the way we react to things is changing. Holy Spirit come we pray. And all of this we ask in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Genesis 46-47

Jacob Goes to Egypt

46 So Israel(A) set out with all that was his, and when he reached Beersheba,(B) he offered sacrifices(C) to the God of his father Isaac.(D)

And God spoke to Israel(E) in a vision at night(F) and said, “Jacob! Jacob!”

“Here I am,”(G) he replied.

“I am God, the God of your father,”(H) he said. “Do not be afraid(I) to go down to Egypt,(J) for I will make you into a great nation(K) there.(L) I will go down to Egypt with you, and I will surely bring you back again.(M) And Joseph’s own hand will close your eyes.(N)

Then Jacob left Beersheba,(O) and Israel’s(P) sons took their father Jacob and their children and their wives in the carts(Q) that Pharaoh had sent to transport him. So Jacob and all his offspring went to Egypt,(R) taking with them their livestock and the possessions(S) they had acquired(T) in Canaan. Jacob brought with him to Egypt(U) his sons and grandsons and his daughters and granddaughters—all his offspring.(V)

These are the names of the sons of Israel(W) (Jacob and his descendants) who went to Egypt:

Reuben the firstborn(X) of Jacob.

The sons of Reuben:(Y)

Hanok, Pallu,(Z) Hezron and Karmi.(AA)

10 The sons of Simeon:(AB)

Jemuel,(AC) Jamin, Ohad, Jakin, Zohar(AD) and Shaul the son of a Canaanite woman.

11 The sons of Levi:(AE)

Gershon,(AF) Kohath(AG) and Merari.(AH)

12 The sons of Judah:(AI)

Er,(AJ) Onan,(AK) Shelah, Perez(AL) and Zerah(AM) (but Er and Onan had died in the land of Canaan).(AN)

The sons of Perez:(AO)

Hezron and Hamul.(AP)

13 The sons of Issachar:(AQ)

Tola, Puah,[a](AR) Jashub[b](AS) and Shimron.

14 The sons of Zebulun:(AT)

Sered, Elon and Jahleel.

15 These were the sons Leah bore to Jacob in Paddan Aram,[c](AU) besides his daughter Dinah.(AV) These sons and daughters of his were thirty-three in all.

16 The sons of Gad:(AW)

Zephon,[d](AX) Haggi, Shuni, Ezbon, Eri, Arodi and Areli.

17 The sons of Asher:(AY)

Imnah, Ishvah, Ishvi and Beriah.

Their sister was Serah.

The sons of Beriah:

Heber and Malkiel.

18 These were the children born to Jacob by Zilpah,(AZ) whom Laban had given to his daughter Leah(BA)—sixteen in all.

19 The sons of Jacob’s wife Rachel:(BB)

Joseph and Benjamin.(BC) 20 In Egypt, Manasseh(BD) and Ephraim(BE) were born to Joseph(BF) by Asenath daughter of Potiphera, priest of On.[e](BG)

21 The sons of Benjamin:(BH)

Bela, Beker, Ashbel, Gera, Naaman, Ehi, Rosh, Muppim, Huppim and Ard.(BI)

22 These were the sons of Rachel(BJ) who were born to Jacob—fourteen in all.

23 The son of Dan:(BK)

Hushim.(BL)

24 The sons of Naphtali:(BM)

Jahziel, Guni, Jezer and Shillem.

25 These were the sons born to Jacob by Bilhah,(BN) whom Laban had given to his daughter Rachel(BO)—seven in all.

26 All those who went to Egypt with Jacob—those who were his direct descendants, not counting his sons’ wives—numbered sixty-six persons.(BP) 27 With the two sons[f] who had been born to Joseph in Egypt,(BQ) the members of Jacob’s family, which went to Egypt, were seventy[g] in all.(BR)

28 Now Jacob sent Judah(BS) ahead of him to Joseph to get directions to Goshen.(BT) When they arrived in the region of Goshen, 29 Joseph had his chariot(BU) made ready and went to Goshen to meet his father Israel.(BV) As soon as Joseph appeared before him, he threw his arms around his father[h] and wept(BW) for a long time.(BX)

30 Israel(BY) said to Joseph, “Now I am ready to die, since I have seen for myself that you are still alive.”(BZ)

31 Then Joseph said to his brothers and to his father’s household, “I will go up and speak to Pharaoh and will say to him, ‘My brothers and my father’s household, who were living in the land of Canaan,(CA) have come to me.(CB) 32 The men are shepherds;(CC) they tend livestock,(CD) and they have brought along their flocks and herds and everything they own.’(CE) 33 When Pharaoh calls you in and asks, ‘What is your occupation?’(CF) 34 you should answer, ‘Your servants(CG) have tended livestock from our boyhood on, just as our fathers did.’(CH) Then you will be allowed to settle(CI) in the region of Goshen,(CJ) for all shepherds are detestable to the Egyptians.(CK)

47 Joseph went and told Pharaoh, “My father and brothers, with their flocks and herds and everything they own, have come from the land of Canaan(CL) and are now in Goshen.”(CM) He chose five of his brothers and presented them(CN) before Pharaoh.

Pharaoh asked the brothers, “What is your occupation?”(CO)

“Your servants(CP) are shepherds,(CQ)” they replied to Pharaoh, “just as our fathers were.” They also said to him, “We have come to live here for a while,(CR) because the famine is severe in Canaan(CS) and your servants’ flocks have no pasture.(CT) So now, please let your servants settle in Goshen.”(CU)

Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Your father and your brothers have come to you, and the land of Egypt is before you; settle(CV) your father and your brothers in the best part of the land.(CW) Let them live in Goshen. And if you know of any among them with special ability,(CX) put them in charge of my own livestock.(CY)

Then Joseph brought his father Jacob in and presented him(CZ) before Pharaoh. After Jacob blessed[i] Pharaoh,(DA) Pharaoh asked him, “How old are you?”

And Jacob said to Pharaoh, “The years of my pilgrimage are a hundred and thirty.(DB) My years have been few and difficult,(DC) and they do not equal the years of the pilgrimage of my fathers.(DD) 10 Then Jacob blessed[j] Pharaoh(DE) and went out from his presence.

11 So Joseph settled his father and his brothers in Egypt and gave them property in the best part of the land,(DF) the district of Rameses,(DG) as Pharaoh directed. 12 Joseph also provided his father and his brothers and all his father’s household with food, according to the number of their children.(DH)

Joseph and the Famine

13 There was no food, however, in the whole region because the famine was severe; both Egypt and Canaan wasted away because of the famine.(DI) 14 Joseph collected all the money that was to be found in Egypt and Canaan in payment for the grain they were buying,(DJ) and he brought it to Pharaoh’s palace.(DK) 15 When the money of the people of Egypt and Canaan was gone,(DL) all Egypt came to Joseph(DM) and said, “Give us food. Why should we die before your eyes?(DN) Our money is all gone.”

16 “Then bring your livestock,(DO)” said Joseph. “I will sell you food in exchange for your livestock, since your money is gone.(DP) 17 So they brought their livestock to Joseph, and he gave them food in exchange for their horses,(DQ) their sheep and goats, their cattle and donkeys.(DR) And he brought them through that year with food in exchange for all their livestock.

18 When that year was over, they came to him the following year and said, “We cannot hide from our lord the fact that since our money is gone(DS) and our livestock belongs to you,(DT) there is nothing left for our lord except our bodies and our land. 19 Why should we perish before your eyes(DU)—we and our land as well? Buy us and our land in exchange for food,(DV) and we with our land will be in bondage to Pharaoh.(DW) Give us seed so that we may live and not die,(DX) and that the land may not become desolate.”

20 So Joseph bought all the land in Egypt for Pharaoh. The Egyptians, one and all, sold their fields, because the famine was too severe(DY) for them. The land became Pharaoh’s, 21 and Joseph reduced the people to servitude,[k](DZ) from one end of Egypt to the other. 22 However, he did not buy the land of the priests,(EA) because they received a regular allotment from Pharaoh and had food enough from the allotment(EB) Pharaoh gave them. That is why they did not sell their land.

23 Joseph said to the people, “Now that I have bought you and your land today for Pharaoh, here is seed(EC) for you so you can plant the ground.(ED) 24 But when the crop comes in, give a fifth(EE) of it to Pharaoh. The other four-fifths you may keep as seed for the fields and as food for yourselves and your households and your children.”

25 “You have saved our lives,” they said. “May we find favor in the eyes of our lord;(EF) we will be in bondage to Pharaoh.”(EG)

26 So Joseph established it as a law concerning land in Egypt—still in force today—that a fifth(EH) of the produce belongs to Pharaoh. It was only the land of the priests that did not become Pharaoh’s.(EI)

27 Now the Israelites settled in Egypt in the region of Goshen.(EJ) They acquired property there(EK) and were fruitful and increased greatly in number.(EL)

28 Jacob lived in Egypt(EM) seventeen years, and the years of his life were a hundred and forty-seven.(EN) 29 When the time drew near for Israel(EO) to die,(EP) he called for his son Joseph and said to him, “If I have found favor in your eyes,(EQ) put your hand under my thigh(ER) and promise that you will show me kindness(ES) and faithfulness.(ET) Do not bury me in Egypt, 30 but when I rest with my fathers,(EU) carry me out of Egypt and bury me where they are buried.”(EV)

“I will do as you say,” he said.

31 “Swear to me,”(EW) he said. Then Joseph swore to him,(EX) and Israel(EY) worshiped as he leaned on the top of his staff.[l](EZ)

Matthew 15:1-28

That Which Defiles(A)

15 Then some Pharisees and teachers of the law came to Jesus from Jerusalem and asked, “Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? They don’t wash their hands before they eat!”(B)

Jesus replied, “And why do you break the command of God for the sake of your tradition? For God said, ‘Honor your father and mother’[a](C) and ‘Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.’[b](D) But you say that if anyone declares that what might have been used to help their father or mother is ‘devoted to God,’ they are not to ‘honor their father or mother’ with it. Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition. You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you:

“‘These people honor me with their lips,
but their hearts are far from me.
They worship me in vain;
their teachings are merely human rules.(E)[c](F)

10 Jesus called the crowd to him and said, “Listen and understand. 11 What goes into someone’s mouth does not defile them,(G) but what comes out of their mouth, that is what defiles them.”(H)

12 Then the disciples came to him and asked, “Do you know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this?”

13 He replied, “Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted(I) will be pulled up by the roots. 14 Leave them; they are blind guides.[d](J) If the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a pit.”(K)

15 Peter said, “Explain the parable to us.”(L)

16 “Are you still so dull?”(M) Jesus asked them. 17 “Don’t you see that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and then out of the body? 18 But the things that come out of a person’s mouth come from the heart,(N) and these defile them. 19 For out of the heart come evil thoughts—murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander.(O) 20 These are what defile a person;(P) but eating with unwashed hands does not defile them.”

The Faith of a Canaanite Woman(Q)

21 Leaving that place, Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon.(R) 22 A Canaanite woman from that vicinity came to him, crying out, “Lord, Son of David,(S) have mercy on me! My daughter is demon-possessed and suffering terribly.”(T)

23 Jesus did not answer a word. So his disciples came to him and urged him, “Send her away, for she keeps crying out after us.”

24 He answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel.”(U)

25 The woman came and knelt before him.(V) “Lord, help me!” she said.

26 He replied, “It is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs.”

27 “Yes it is, Lord,” she said. “Even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master’s table.”

28 Then Jesus said to her, “Woman, you have great faith!(W) Your request is granted.” And her daughter was healed at that moment.

Psalm 19

Psalm 19[a]

For the director of music. A psalm of David.

The heavens(A) declare(B) the glory of God;(C)
the skies(D) proclaim the work of his hands.(E)
Day after day they pour forth speech;
night after night they reveal knowledge.(F)
They have no speech, they use no words;
no sound is heard from them.
Yet their voice[b] goes out into all the earth,
their words to the ends of the world.(G)
In the heavens God has pitched a tent(H) for the sun.(I)
It is like a bridegroom(J) coming out of his chamber,(K)
like a champion(L) rejoicing to run his course.
It rises at one end of the heavens(M)
and makes its circuit to the other;(N)
nothing is deprived of its warmth.

The law of the Lord(O) is perfect,(P)
refreshing the soul.(Q)
The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy,(R)
making wise the simple.(S)
The precepts of the Lord are right,(T)
giving joy(U) to the heart.
The commands of the Lord are radiant,
giving light to the eyes.(V)
The fear of the Lord(W) is pure,
enduring forever.
The decrees of the Lord are firm,
and all of them are righteous.(X)

10 They are more precious than gold,(Y)
than much pure gold;
they are sweeter than honey,(Z)
than honey from the honeycomb.(AA)
11 By them your servant is warned;
in keeping them there is great reward.
12 But who can discern their own errors?
Forgive my hidden faults.(AB)
13 Keep your servant also from willful sins;(AC)
may they not rule over me.(AD)
Then I will be blameless,(AE)
innocent of great transgression.

14 May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart
be pleasing(AF) in your sight,
Lord, my Rock(AG) and my Redeemer.(AH)

Proverbs 4:14-19

14 Do not set foot on the path of the wicked
or walk in the way of evildoers.(A)
15 Avoid it, do not travel on it;
turn from it and go on your way.
16 For they cannot rest until they do evil;(B)
they are robbed of sleep till they make someone stumble.
17 They eat the bread of wickedness
and drink the wine of violence.(C)

18 The path of the righteous(D) is like the morning sun,(E)
shining ever brighter till the full light of day.(F)
19 But the way of the wicked is like deep darkness;(G)
they do not know what makes them stumble.(H)
