Leviticus 9:7-10:20

Moses said to Aaron, “Come to the altar and sacrifice your sin offering and your burnt offering and make atonement for yourself and the people;(A) sacrifice the offering that is for the people and make atonement for them, as the Lord has commanded.(B)

So Aaron came to the altar and slaughtered the calf as a sin offering(C) for himself. His sons brought the blood to him,(D) and he dipped his finger into the blood and put it on the horns of the altar; the rest of the blood he poured out at the base of the altar.(E) 10 On the altar he burned the fat, the kidneys and the long lobe of the liver from the sin offering, as the Lord commanded Moses; 11 the flesh and the hide(F) he burned up outside the camp.(G)

12 Then he slaughtered the burnt offering.(H) His sons handed him the blood,(I) and he splashed it against the sides of the altar. 13 They handed him the burnt offering piece by piece, including the head, and he burned them on the altar.(J) 14 He washed the internal organs and the legs and burned them on top of the burnt offering on the altar.(K)

15 Aaron then brought the offering that was for the people.(L) He took the goat for the people’s sin offering and slaughtered it and offered it for a sin offering as he did with the first one.

16 He brought the burnt offering and offered it in the prescribed way.(M) 17 He also brought the grain offering, took a handful of it and burned it on the altar in addition to the morning’s burnt offering.(N)

18 He slaughtered the ox and the ram as the fellowship offering for the people.(O) His sons handed him the blood, and he splashed it against the sides of the altar. 19 But the fat portions of the ox and the ram—the fat tail, the layer of fat, the kidneys and the long lobe of the liver— 20 these they laid on the breasts, and then Aaron burned the fat on the altar. 21 Aaron waved the breasts and the right thigh before the Lord as a wave offering,(P) as Moses commanded.

22 Then Aaron lifted his hands toward the people and blessed them.(Q) And having sacrificed the sin offering, the burnt offering and the fellowship offering, he stepped down.

23 Moses and Aaron then went into the tent of meeting.(R) When they came out, they blessed the people; and the glory of the Lord(S) appeared to all the people. 24 Fire(T) came out from the presence of the Lord and consumed the burnt offering and the fat portions on the altar. And when all the people saw it, they shouted for joy and fell facedown.(U)

The Death of Nadab and Abihu

10 Aaron’s sons Nadab and Abihu(V) took their censers,(W) put fire in them(X) and added incense;(Y) and they offered unauthorized fire before the Lord,(Z) contrary to his command.(AA) So fire came out(AB) from the presence of the Lord and consumed them,(AC) and they died before the Lord.(AD) Moses then said to Aaron, “This is what the Lord spoke of when he said:

“‘Among those who approach me(AE)
I will be proved holy;(AF)
in the sight of all the people
I will be honored.(AG)’”

Aaron remained silent.

Moses summoned Mishael and Elzaphan,(AH) sons of Aaron’s uncle Uzziel,(AI) and said to them, “Come here; carry your cousins outside the camp,(AJ) away from the front of the sanctuary.(AK) So they came and carried them, still in their tunics,(AL) outside the camp, as Moses ordered.

Then Moses said to Aaron and his sons Eleazar and Ithamar,(AM) “Do not let your hair become unkempt[a](AN) and do not tear your clothes,(AO) or you will die and the Lord will be angry with the whole community.(AP) But your relatives, all the Israelites, may mourn(AQ) for those the Lord has destroyed by fire. Do not leave the entrance to the tent of meeting(AR) or you will die, because the Lord’s anointing oil(AS) is on you.” So they did as Moses said.

Then the Lord said to Aaron, “You and your sons are not to drink wine(AT) or other fermented drink(AU) whenever you go into the tent of meeting, or you will die. This is a lasting ordinance(AV) for the generations to come, 10 so that you can distinguish between the holy and the common, between the unclean and the clean,(AW) 11 and so you can teach(AX) the Israelites all the decrees the Lord has given them through Moses.(AY)

12 Moses said to Aaron and his remaining sons, Eleazar and Ithamar, “Take the grain offering(AZ) left over from the food offerings prepared without yeast and presented to the Lord and eat it beside the altar,(BA) for it is most holy. 13 Eat it in the sanctuary area,(BB) because it is your share and your sons’ share of the food offerings presented to the Lord; for so I have been commanded.(BC) 14 But you and your sons and your daughters may eat the breast(BD) that was waved and the thigh that was presented. Eat them in a ceremonially clean place;(BE) they have been given to you and your children as your share of the Israelites’ fellowship offerings. 15 The thigh(BF) that was presented and the breast that was waved must be brought with the fat portions of the food offerings, to be waved before the Lord as a wave offering.(BG) This will be the perpetual share for you and your children, as the Lord has commanded.”

16 When Moses inquired about the goat of the sin offering[b](BH) and found that it had been burned up, he was angry with Eleazar and Ithamar, Aaron’s remaining sons, and asked, 17 “Why didn’t you eat the sin offering(BI) in the sanctuary area? It is most holy; it was given to you to take away the guilt(BJ) of the community by making atonement for them before the Lord. 18 Since its blood was not taken into the Holy Place,(BK) you should have eaten the goat in the sanctuary area, as I commanded.(BL)

19 Aaron replied to Moses, “Today they sacrificed their sin offering and their burnt offering(BM) before the Lord, but such things as this have happened to me. Would the Lord have been pleased if I had eaten the sin offering today?” 20 When Moses heard this, he was satisfied.

Mark 4:26-5:20

The Parable of the Growing Seed

26 He also said, “This is what the kingdom of God is like.(A) A man scatters seed on the ground. 27 Night and day, whether he sleeps or gets up, the seed sprouts and grows, though he does not know how. 28 All by itself the soil produces grain—first the stalk, then the head, then the full kernel in the head. 29 As soon as the grain is ripe, he puts the sickle to it, because the harvest has come.”(B)

The Parable of the Mustard Seed(C)

30 Again he said, “What shall we say the kingdom of God is like,(D) or what parable shall we use to describe it? 31 It is like a mustard seed, which is the smallest of all seeds on earth. 32 Yet when planted, it grows and becomes the largest of all garden plants, with such big branches that the birds can perch in its shade.”

33 With many similar parables Jesus spoke the word to them, as much as they could understand.(E) 34 He did not say anything to them without using a parable.(F) But when he was alone with his own disciples, he explained everything.

Jesus Calms the Storm(G)

35 That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.” 36 Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat.(H) There were also other boats with him. 37 A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. 38 Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?”

39 He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.

40 He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”(I)

41 They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”

Jesus Restores a Demon-Possessed Man(J)(K)

They went across the lake to the region of the Gerasenes.[a] When Jesus got out of the boat,(L) a man with an impure spirit(M) came from the tombs to meet him. This man lived in the tombs, and no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain. For he had often been chained hand and foot, but he tore the chains apart and broke the irons on his feet. No one was strong enough to subdue him. Night and day among the tombs and in the hills he would cry out and cut himself with stones.

When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and fell on his knees in front of him. He shouted at the top of his voice, “What do you want with me,(N) Jesus, Son of the Most High God?(O) In God’s name don’t torture me!” For Jesus had said to him, “Come out of this man, you impure spirit!”

Then Jesus asked him, “What is your name?”

“My name is Legion,”(P) he replied, “for we are many.” 10 And he begged Jesus again and again not to send them out of the area.

11 A large herd of pigs was feeding on the nearby hillside. 12 The demons begged Jesus, “Send us among the pigs; allow us to go into them.” 13 He gave them permission, and the impure spirits came out and went into the pigs. The herd, about two thousand in number, rushed down the steep bank into the lake and were drowned.

14 Those tending the pigs ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, and the people went out to see what had happened. 15 When they came to Jesus, they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion(Q) of demons,(R) sitting there, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid. 16 Those who had seen it told the people what had happened to the demon-possessed man—and told about the pigs as well. 17 Then the people began to plead with Jesus to leave their region.

18 As Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed begged to go with him. 19 Jesus did not let him, but said, “Go home to your own people and tell them(S) how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.” 20 So the man went away and began to tell in the Decapolis[b](T) how much Jesus had done for him. And all the people were amazed.

Leviticus 7:28-9:6, Mark 3:31-4:25, Psalms 37:12-29, Proverbs 10:5

Today is the 19th day of February, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I am Brian it’s great to be here with you. Coming to you from Ashdod, ancient Philistine stronghold city here in the land of Israel where we will be launching out today on the first day of our pilgrimage. So, super excited about all of that, super excited to share the photos and video and just talk about what we’re seeing and doing as we begin our adventure. But…well…not a lot has happened yet, but we’ll talk about it at the end but we are at the beginning and we have come around this Global Campfire to allow God’s word to wash into our lives and speak to us today. So, we’re reading from the New International Version this week. Leviticus chapter 7 verse 28 through 9 verse 6 today.

Commentary:

Okay, so, in the Gospel of Mark we had the story, a farmer went out to so, right, and he throws seed and it lands on all different kinds of ground and this is a parable that Jesus is telling and we’ve encountered this parable while we were going to the book of Matthew. Matthew, Mark, and Luke are this synoptic Gospels and so there’s a lot of shared material and pretty much all biblical scholars agree that the source material would be Mark, the gospel that we are reading as the earliest of the Gospels. So, Jesus talks about this farmer throwing seed. And, so, we can assume that there’s nothing wrong with seed, like the seed is good seed and it was scattered evenly but it was scattered evenly over different kinds of ground. So…so the seed is good, but the hope of the harvest was in the soil. So, in Jesus parable the seed is the word of God and the soil is the human heart. So, right there we see that a collaboration is required, the human and the divine collaborate in God’s kingdom. So, we’ve been at this, what…seven…are we seven weeks in yet…six weeks…I don’t have a calendar in front of me and I’m still…still trying to keep up with what day this is as we launch this pilgrimage in the land of Israel. But we’ve been at this, we’ve established a rhythm, this is a daily thing we do. So, at this point it’s a good time to take in Jesus message and apply it to ourselves because harvest is a theme throughout the Scriptures and harvest is a theme throughout our lives and we want the harvest in our lives but we can’t expect a harvest that is going to yield 100 times over if the soil of our hearts is…isn’t appropriate for that. So, in this analogy the…the word of God, like this is what we do, this is what we’re here for every day. So, this seed is getting thrown out, the word of God all over this community every day and if it only lands on the surface it’s gonna get snatched away almost immediately. And don’t we know that? Like haven’t it we witnessed that. We might not have thought of it in these terms, but don’t we already know this is true and if our hearts are stony and cold and hard there’s nowhere for the word of God to take root at all. And if we’re just obsessed by the worries of life or we’re just chasing wealth or some kind of goal or desire, well then according to Jesus, the seed has been thrown and it’s good seed but it’s fallen on a thorny ground that will choke out the word of God. So, this is as good a time as any to start thinking about what kind of soil we might be and what kind of soil we might be cultivating in our hearts. It…it might be time to do some gardening.

Prayer:

Jesus, we invite You into that as we hear Your words and consider what kind of soil we are. This was what You wanted us to think about. And, so, we are thinking about it. And it’s interesting because we can probably find patches of all these different kinds of ground as we walk the terrain of our own hearts. It’s likely that we can find places that are thriving. But it’s also likely that we can find places where the word has been snatched away or where it’s rocky ground and there’s no place for it to take hold or we’re…we’re just obsessed with something else and distracted and so it’s choked out. What we want to be is good soil because what we want to experience is the full harvest and to be a laborer for the good harvest in the lives of others. And, so, we invite Your Holy Spirit to cause us to continually come back to this today, to come back to our own hearts, to come back to its terrain. What does it look like? Show us the places that need tending. Come Holy Spirit we ask in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Announcements:

dailyaudiobible.com is the website, home base, where you find out what’s going on around here. And today will be our first day of…of touring in the land of Israel. And I won’t really be able to report back much until things happen. So, I’ll get to tell you about today tomorrow but yeah, I can tell you about yesterday. Yeah….we got in and we went mudding and went out to a Philistine archaeological site called Akron, a place that I’ve been trying to get to over three different seasons. And lots of people were like, “why would you want to go there? Like, there’s nothing to see there. Why would you want to go there?” But…well that started out simply by trying to document and a photograph and take film of the…the Philistine strongholds mentioned in the Bible except for Gaza. And, so, we got three of those which is Gath and Ashdod and Ashkelon out. But the last two are modern cities. So, accessibility is relatively easy. This has been hard to get to. So, yeah once we were thwarted it was like, okay it’s on. And then we were thwarted again in a different year and it was like, okay I don’t care if there’s nothing to see there, I…I am going to see that place. And, so, finally mission accomplished and…and then so we got to Ashdod and got all situated in a hotel and had just a fantastic dinner last night just getting familiar, just getting to see each other. It’s all gonna become a family and so just making that first acquaintance. Jetlagged everybody, you know, just people all over the map. Some have come in early, got acclimated, some are just like, just getting in and delirious with it all but high on adrenaline. But it’s always fun to be there on the Mediterranean coast and just realize “holy moly I’m in the holy land. Like that’s the Mediterranean Sea. This is going to be epic.” And, so, that’s kind of where we are and what we’re feeling and we’ll be heading southward today out into the wilderness, which is where so much of the biblical stories happen. And, so, we’ll be heading into the wilderness today making our way down to the furthest southern tip of Israel, a city called Eilot, which sits on the shores of the Red Sea. So, thank you. Thank you for your continued prayers over everything from the vehicles to the technology to health to whether to…to jetlag and just everything that goes into this. We’ll be kind of setting a rhythm for our days and we’ll fall into that rhythm, but this is kind of day one. And, so, we’re just getting used to the fact that we’re here at all. And, so, we…we…we gratefully, gratefully thank you for your prayers.

Leviticus 7:28-9:6

The Priests’ Share

28 The Lord said to Moses, 29 “Say to the Israelites: ‘Anyone who brings a fellowship offering to the Lord is to bring part of it as their sacrifice to the Lord. 30 With their own hands they are to present the food offering to the Lord; they are to bring the fat, together with the breast, and wave the breast before the Lord as a wave offering.(A) 31 The priest shall burn the fat on the altar,(B) but the breast belongs to Aaron and his sons.(C) 32 You are to give the right thigh of your fellowship offerings to the priest as a contribution.(D) 33 The son of Aaron who offers the blood and the fat of the fellowship offering shall have the right thigh as his share. 34 From the fellowship offerings of the Israelites, I have taken the breast that is waved and the thigh(E) that is presented and have given them to Aaron the priest and his sons(F) as their perpetual share from the Israelites.’”

35 This is the portion of the food offerings presented to the Lord that were allotted to Aaron and his sons on the day they were presented to serve the Lord as priests. 36 On the day they were anointed,(G) the Lord commanded that the Israelites give this to them as their perpetual share for the generations to come.

37 These, then, are the regulations for the burnt offering,(H) the grain offering,(I) the sin offering, the guilt offering, the ordination offering(J) and the fellowship offering, 38 which the Lord gave Moses(K) at Mount Sinai(L) in the Desert of Sinai on the day he commanded the Israelites to bring their offerings to the Lord.(M)

The Ordination of Aaron and His Sons(N)

The Lord said to Moses, “Bring Aaron and his sons,(O) their garments,(P) the anointing oil,(Q) the bull for the sin offering,[a](R) the two rams(S) and the basket containing bread made without yeast,(T) and gather the entire assembly(U) at the entrance to the tent of meeting.” Moses did as the Lord commanded him, and the assembly gathered at the entrance to the tent of meeting.

Moses said to the assembly, “This is what the Lord has commanded to be done.(V) Then Moses brought Aaron and his sons forward and washed them with water.(W) He put the tunic on Aaron, tied the sash around him, clothed him with the robe and put the ephod on him. He also fastened the ephod with a decorative waistband, which he tied around him.(X) He placed the breastpiece(Y) on him and put the Urim and Thummim(Z) in the breastpiece. Then he placed the turban(AA) on Aaron’s head and set the gold plate, the sacred emblem,(AB) on the front of it, as the Lord commanded Moses.(AC)

10 Then Moses took the anointing oil(AD) and anointed(AE) the tabernacle(AF) and everything in it, and so consecrated them. 11 He sprinkled some of the oil on the altar seven times, anointing the altar and all its utensils and the basin with its stand, to consecrate them.(AG) 12 He poured some of the anointing oil on Aaron’s head and anointed(AH) him to consecrate him.(AI) 13 Then he brought Aaron’s sons(AJ) forward, put tunics(AK) on them, tied sashes around them and fastened caps on them, as the Lord commanded Moses.(AL)

14 He then presented the bull(AM) for the sin offering,(AN) and Aaron and his sons laid their hands on its head.(AO) 15 Moses slaughtered the bull and took some of the blood,(AP) and with his finger he put it on all the horns of the altar(AQ) to purify the altar.(AR) He poured out the rest of the blood at the base of the altar. So he consecrated it to make atonement for it.(AS) 16 Moses also took all the fat around the internal organs, the long lobe of the liver, and both kidneys and their fat, and burned it on the altar. 17 But the bull with its hide and its flesh and its intestines(AT) he burned up outside the camp,(AU) as the Lord commanded Moses.

18 He then presented the ram(AV) for the burnt offering, and Aaron and his sons laid their hands on its head. 19 Then Moses slaughtered the ram and splashed the blood against the sides of the altar. 20 He cut the ram into pieces and burned the head, the pieces and the fat.(AW) 21 He washed the internal organs and the legs with water and burned the whole ram on the altar. It was a burnt offering, a pleasing aroma, a food offering presented to the Lord, as the Lord commanded Moses.

22 He then presented the other ram, the ram for the ordination,(AX) and Aaron and his sons laid their hands on its head.(AY) 23 Moses slaughtered the ram and took some of its blood and put it on the lobe of Aaron’s right ear, on the thumb of his right hand and on the big toe of his right foot.(AZ) 24 Moses also brought Aaron’s sons forward and put some of the blood on the lobes of their right ears, on the thumbs of their right hands and on the big toes of their right feet. Then he splashed blood against the sides of the altar.(BA) 25 After that, he took the fat(BB), the fat tail, all the fat around the internal organs, the long lobe of the liver, both kidneys and their fat and the right thigh. 26 And from the basket of bread made without yeast, which was before the Lord, he took one thick loaf, one thick loaf with olive oil mixed in, and one thin loaf,(BC) and he put these on the fat portions and on the right thigh. 27 He put all these in the hands of Aaron and his sons, and they waved them before the Lord(BD) as a wave offering. 28 Then Moses took them from their hands and burned them on the altar on top of the burnt offering as an ordination offering, a pleasing aroma, a food offering presented to the Lord. 29 Moses also took the breast, which was his share of the ordination ram,(BE) and waved it before the Lord as a wave offering, as the Lord commanded Moses.

30 Then Moses(BF) took some of the anointing oil and some of the blood from the altar and sprinkled them on Aaron and his garments(BG) and on his sons and their garments. So he consecrated(BH) Aaron and his garments and his sons and their garments.

31 Moses then said to Aaron and his sons, “Cook the meat at the entrance to the tent of meeting(BI) and eat it there with the bread from the basket of ordination offerings, as I was commanded: ‘Aaron and his sons are to eat it.’ 32 Then burn up the rest of the meat and the bread. 33 Do not leave the entrance to the tent of meeting for seven days, until the days of your ordination are completed, for your ordination will last seven days.(BJ) 34 What has been done today was commanded by the Lord(BK) to make atonement for you. 35 You must stay at the entrance to the tent of meeting day and night for seven days and do what the Lord requires,(BL) so you will not die; for that is what I have been commanded.”

36 So Aaron and his sons did everything the Lord commanded through Moses.

The Priests Begin Their Ministry

On the eighth day(BM) Moses summoned Aaron and his sons and the elders(BN) of Israel. He said to Aaron, “Take a bull calf for your sin offering[b] and a ram for your burnt offering, both without defect, and present them before the Lord. Then say to the Israelites: ‘Take a male goat(BO) for a sin offering,(BP) a calf(BQ) and a lamb(BR)—both a year old and without defect—for a burnt offering, and an ox[c](BS) and a ram for a fellowship offering(BT) to sacrifice before the Lord, together with a grain offering mixed with olive oil. For today the Lord will appear to you.(BU)’”

They took the things Moses commanded to the front of the tent of meeting, and the entire assembly came near and stood before the Lord. Then Moses said, “This is what the Lord has commanded you to do, so that the glory of the Lord(BV) may appear to you.”

Mark 3:31-4:25

31 Then Jesus’ mother and brothers arrived.(A) Standing outside, they sent someone in to call him. 32 A crowd was sitting around him, and they told him, “Your mother and brothers are outside looking for you.”

33 “Who are my mother and my brothers?” he asked.

34 Then he looked at those seated in a circle around him and said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! 35 Whoever does God’s will is my brother and sister and mother.”

The Parable of the Sower(B)(C)

Again Jesus began to teach by the lake.(D) The crowd that gathered around him was so large that he got into a boat and sat in it out on the lake, while all the people were along the shore at the water’s edge. He taught them many things by parables,(E) and in his teaching said: “Listen! A farmer went out to sow his seed.(F) As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants, so that they did not bear grain. Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up, grew and produced a crop, some multiplying thirty, some sixty, some a hundred times.”(G)

Then Jesus said, “Whoever has ears to hear, let them hear.”(H)

10 When he was alone, the Twelve and the others around him asked him about the parables. 11 He told them, “The secret of the kingdom of God(I) has been given to you. But to those on the outside(J) everything is said in parables 12 so that,

“‘they may be ever seeing but never perceiving,
and ever hearing but never understanding;
otherwise they might turn and be forgiven!’[a](K)

13 Then Jesus said to them, “Don’t you understand this parable? How then will you understand any parable? 14 The farmer sows the word.(L) 15 Some people are like seed along the path, where the word is sown. As soon as they hear it, Satan(M) comes and takes away the word that was sown in them. 16 Others, like seed sown on rocky places, hear the word and at once receive it with joy. 17 But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away. 18 Still others, like seed sown among thorns, hear the word; 19 but the worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth(N) and the desires for other things come in and choke the word, making it unfruitful. 20 Others, like seed sown on good soil, hear the word, accept it, and produce a crop—some thirty, some sixty, some a hundred times what was sown.”

A Lamp on a Stand

21 He said to them, “Do you bring in a lamp to put it under a bowl or a bed? Instead, don’t you put it on its stand?(O) 22 For whatever is hidden is meant to be disclosed, and whatever is concealed is meant to be brought out into the open.(P) 23 If anyone has ears to hear, let them hear.”(Q)

24 “Consider carefully what you hear,” he continued. “With the measure you use, it will be measured to you—and even more.(R) 25 Whoever has will be given more; whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them.”(S)

Psalm 37:12-29

12 The wicked plot(A) against the righteous
and gnash their teeth(B) at them;
13 but the Lord laughs at the wicked,
for he knows their day is coming.(C)

14 The wicked draw the sword(D)
and bend the bow(E)
to bring down the poor and needy,(F)
to slay those whose ways are upright.
15 But their swords will pierce their own hearts,(G)
and their bows will be broken.(H)

16 Better the little that the righteous have
than the wealth(I) of many wicked;
17 for the power of the wicked will be broken,(J)
but the Lord upholds(K) the righteous.

18 The blameless spend their days under the Lord’s care,(L)
and their inheritance will endure forever.(M)
19 In times of disaster they will not wither;
in days of famine they will enjoy plenty.

20 But the wicked will perish:(N)
Though the Lord’s enemies are like the flowers of the field,
they will be consumed, they will go up in smoke.(O)

21 The wicked borrow and do not repay,
but the righteous give generously;(P)
22 those the Lord blesses will inherit the land,

of the one who delights(T) in him;
24 though he may stumble, he will not fall,(U)
for the Lord upholds(V) him with his hand.

25 I was young and now I am old,
yet I have never seen the righteous forsaken(W)
or their children begging(X) bread.
26 They are always generous and lend freely;(Y)
their children will be a blessing.[a](Z)

27 Turn from evil and do good;(AA)
then you will dwell in the land forever.(AB)
28 For the Lord loves the just
and will not forsake his faithful ones.(AC)

Wrongdoers will be completely destroyed[b];
the offspring of the wicked will perish.(AD)
29 The righteous will inherit the land(AE)
and dwell in it forever.(AF)

Leviticus 6:1-7:27, Mark 3:7-30, Psalms 37:1-11, Proverbs 10:3-4

Today is the 18th day of February, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I am Brian and it’s really, really wonderful to come to you for the first time from the land of the Bible from Israel. And this evening will be the inaugural dinner, our orientation dinner where we’ll finally get to see each other from all of the travel and just see the family that’s gonna be created here in the in the land of the Bible for the next couple weeks. So, I’m excited to be here and I’m excited that…that we’re a virtual community. And, so…so…there was room in the suitcase for you and I’m glad we can all be here together, whether physically or whether in spirit to take this…this pilgrimage, to root ourselves in the places that the Bible happened and to allow that newfound context to awaken things in us so that we don’t see the Bible the same. And, so, we’ll certainly be doing that physically, but we’ll be doing that virtually as we go through the next several days together. So, it’s good to be here for the first time this year and broadcasting the Daily Audio Bible. So, we’re reading from the New International Version this week. We are in the book of Leviticus. We are learning a lot about sacrifice. We are learning, as we talked about yesterday, just how treacherous sin is and how costly it is to our lives. So, we will pick up where we left off yesterday. Leviticus chapter 6 verse 1 through 7 verse 27.

Commentary:

Okay. We’re moving our way through the second gospel, the gospel of Mark. And, so, we’re back alongside Jesus watching His ministry coming from a little bit of a different perspective. And Jesus is…is doing his ministry, He’s revealing the kingdom of God and people are being healed and restored because of this. And, so, His family, they’re watching all of this and they decide somebody needs to get Jesus under control. And, so, the Bible says, “they went to take charge of him for they said he is out of his mind.” Oh…that’s not very encouraging. And, so, Jesus continues to heal and reveal the Kingdom and…and the religious leaders come down from Jerusalem and they decide Jesus is possessed by Beelzebul. And we talked about that when we were going to the book of Matthew. So, this this is not a good day. Like, if…if you go out your door prayed up and ready and you enter the day and you’re looking for God’s kingdom and your revealing God’s kingdom and everything that you touch and your family tells you you’re out of your mind and your spiritual leaders tell you that you’re possessed by the devil, yeah, that…that's…that’s discouraging. May we just notice this. Jesus faced all of these things as a human being. But the one that the…the religious leaders spoke over Jesus, that He is possessed by Beelzebul,  that…that didn’t work. Like, that was a line way too far. And, so, Jesus tried to expose what was going on there. So, he tells a story. “How can Satan drive out Satan”, right? “If a kingdom is divided against itself it can’t stand. If a house is divided against itself the house can’t stand.” So, I mean, that’s Jesus on one level setting the record straight. “Why would you accuse me of doing God’s work while being possessed by the devil. That doesn’t make any sense.” But there was far deeper far far far more dangerous territory that they were stepping into. Jesus told them, “truly I tell you”… and when we read that stuff in the Bible it’s like “truly, verily, verily I say unto thee” but “truly I tell you”, that’s Jesus saying “I’m telling you the truth. People can be forgiven all their sins and every slander they utter but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven. They are guilty of an eternal sin.” Like, yikes. What is that? How do you blaspheme against the Holy Spirit? What is Jesus saying here? First of all, He’s talking to the religious leaders who had just accused Him of being possessed by the devil. And that’s how He got his power to perform these miraculous signs of God’s goodness. What the religious leaders in effect were doing was calling the Spirit within Jesus that was capturing the hearts of Jesus hearers, they were calling that the devil. They were blaspheming the Holy Spirit. They were denigrating what God was doing by calling it of the devil. So, we can go, “oh…sigh of relief. I would never do that. I would never call…I mean I would never call Jesus of the devil.” But it’s actually a little more convicting than that. Have you ever called anyone of the devil or anything of the devil because you didn’t understand it or because everybody else was saying that, everybody else was saying this is false and so you’re on that bandwagon without actually knowing what you’re talking about? What if it’s not of the devil? What if God is at work and you are unaware and then you call it of the devil? That’s what they were doing to Jesus. I’m not saying that things that are evil should not be called out as evil. But you don’t have to look too far in our religious climate to find believers calling other believers of the devil because their theological persuasions might be nuanced, or their doctrinal differences are just too far of a bridge to cross they think. And, so, they label it of the devil. And that is what happened to Jesus. And that is why He commented this way. And it gives us certain things to think about this day. And isn’t that wonderful, isn’t it a gift that God’s word most every day gives us something to meditate upon throughout the day.

Prayer:

Father we invite you into this. In what ways have we denounced what you are doing in the world through someone or situations in the world that we don’t understand and so we’ve miss labeled things? We haven’t been gracious, merciful, compassionate, kind, or any of the other fruits of the Spirit. Instead we’ve been about the business of labeling things or mislabeling things, things that you might be doing and we are simply unaware. Forgive us of this because we would have to then accept the fact that we have gotten in your way when we thought we were defending you. And then we have to confess how foolish that sounds coming out of our minds, our hearts, our mouths. You don’t need us to defend you. You are the most-high God. You’ve invited us to reveal you to the world. That’s a pretty hard thing to do when were simply focused on what each other is doing, and labeling it. So, help us God, forgive us. Give us eyes to see and ears to hear your kingdom. Let us move through this day looking for it, looking for the good, looking for the righteousness that is in this world that is pushing and fighting back the darkness. And forgive us when we have stood in the way. Come Holy Spirit into all of this we ask in the name of Jesus. Amen.

So, it is…it’s good…it’s good to be back in the land. Feeling like…like turning the corner, getting stronger from the jetlag, and get ready for this. Tonight is our inaugural dinner together, our orientation, first time we get to see each other all together in one place at one time. So, that’s super exciting. Today I’m planning…so we talked about this yesterday…third attempt to get to this ancient Philistine ruin called Akron, which is mentioned in the Bible several times. And, so, hoping to get some photography and some…some video of that site today then on the way down to Ashdod where we get settled in and get ready for this evening. So, thank you for your prayers and those of you who are in route who are on the journey then welcome Israel if you’ve landed. The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Tuesday February 18, 2020 (NIV)

Leviticus 6:1-7:27

[a]The Lord said to Moses: “If anyone sins and is unfaithful to the Lord(A) by deceiving a neighbor(B) about something entrusted to them or left in their care(C) or about something stolen, or if they cheat(D) their neighbor, or if they find lost property and lie about it,(E) or if they swear falsely(F) about any such sin that people may commit— when they sin in any of these ways and realize their guilt, they must return(G) what they have stolen or taken by extortion, or what was entrusted to them, or the lost property they found, or whatever it was they swore falsely about. They must make restitution(H) in full, add a fifth of the value to it and give it all to the owner on the day they present their guilt offering.(I) And as a penalty they must bring to the priest, that is, to the Lord, their guilt offering,(J) a ram from the flock, one without defect and of the proper value.(K) In this way the priest will make atonement(L) for them before the Lord, and they will be forgiven for any of the things they did that made them guilty.”

The Lord said to Moses: “Give Aaron and his sons this command: ‘These are the regulations for the burnt offering(M): The burnt offering is to remain on the altar hearth throughout the night, till morning, and the fire must be kept burning on the altar.(N) 10 The priest shall then put on his linen clothes,(O) with linen undergarments next to his body,(P) and shall remove the ashes(Q) of the burnt offering that the fire has consumed on the altar and place them beside the altar. 11 Then he is to take off these clothes and put on others, and carry the ashes outside the camp to a place that is ceremonially clean.(R) 12 The fire on the altar must be kept burning; it must not go out. Every morning the priest is to add firewood(S) and arrange the burnt offering on the fire and burn the fat(T) of the fellowship offerings(U) on it. 13 The fire must be kept burning on the altar continuously; it must not go out.

The Grain Offering

14 “‘These are the regulations for the grain offering:(V) Aaron’s sons are to bring it before the Lord, in front of the altar. 15 The priest is to take a handful of the finest flour and some olive oil, together with all the incense(W) on the grain offering,(X) and burn the memorial[b] portion(Y) on the altar as an aroma pleasing to the Lord. 16 Aaron and his sons(Z) shall eat the rest(AA) of it, but it is to be eaten without yeast(AB) in the sanctuary area;(AC) they are to eat it in the courtyard(AD) of the tent of meeting.(AE) 17 It must not be baked with yeast; I have given it as their share(AF) of the food offerings presented to me.(AG) Like the sin offering[c] and the guilt offering, it is most holy.(AH) 18 Any male descendant of Aaron may eat it.(AI) For all generations to come(AJ) it is his perpetual share(AK) of the food offerings presented to the Lord. Whatever touches them will become holy.[d](AL)’”

19 The Lord also said to Moses, 20 “This is the offering Aaron and his sons are to bring to the Lord on the day he[e] is anointed:(AM) a tenth of an ephah[f](AN) of the finest flour(AO) as a regular grain offering,(AP) half of it in the morning and half in the evening. 21 It must be prepared with oil on a griddle;(AQ) bring it well-mixed and present the grain offering broken[g] in pieces as an aroma pleasing to the Lord. 22 The son who is to succeed him as anointed priest(AR) shall prepare it. It is the Lord’s perpetual share and is to be burned completely.(AS) 23 Every grain offering of a priest shall be burned completely; it must not be eaten.”

The Sin Offering

24 The Lord said to Moses, 25 “Say to Aaron and his sons: ‘These are the regulations for the sin offering:(AT) The sin offering is to be slaughtered before the Lord(AU) in the place(AV) the burnt offering is slaughtered; it is most holy. 26 The priest who offers it shall eat it; it is to be eaten in the sanctuary area,(AW) in the courtyard(AX) of the tent of meeting.(AY) 27 Whatever touches any of the flesh will become holy,(AZ) and if any of the blood is spattered on a garment, you must wash it in the sanctuary area. 28 The clay pot(BA) the meat is cooked in must be broken; but if it is cooked in a bronze pot, the pot is to be scoured and rinsed with water. 29 Any male in a priest’s family may eat it;(BB) it is most holy.(BC) 30 But any sin offering whose blood is brought into the tent of meeting to make atonement(BD) in the Holy Place(BE) must not be eaten; it must be burned up.(BF)

The Guilt Offering

“‘These are the regulations for the guilt offering,(BG) which is most holy: The guilt offering is to be slaughtered in the place where the burnt offering is slaughtered, and its blood is to be splashed against the sides of the altar. All its fat(BH) shall be offered: the fat tail and the fat that covers the internal organs, both kidneys with the fat on them near the loins, and the long lobe of the liver, which is to be removed with the kidneys.(BI) The priest shall burn them on the altar(BJ) as a food offering presented to the Lord. It is a guilt offering. Any male in a priest’s family may eat it,(BK) but it must be eaten in the sanctuary area; it is most holy.(BL)

“‘The same law applies to both the sin offering[h](BM) and the guilt offering:(BN) They belong to the priest(BO) who makes atonement with them.(BP) The priest who offers a burnt offering for anyone may keep its hide(BQ) for himself. Every grain offering baked in an oven(BR) or cooked in a pan(BS) or on a griddle(BT) belongs to the priest who offers it, 10 and every grain offering, whether mixed with olive oil or dry, belongs equally to all the sons of Aaron.

The Fellowship Offering

11 “‘These are the regulations for the fellowship offering anyone may present to the Lord:

12 “‘If they offer it as an expression of thankfulness, then along with this thank offering(BU) they are to offer thick loaves(BV) made without yeast(BW) and with olive oil mixed in, thin loaves(BX) made without yeast and brushed with oil,(BY) and thick loaves of the finest flour well-kneaded and with oil mixed in. 13 Along with their fellowship offering of thanksgiving(BZ) they are to present an offering with thick loaves of bread made with yeast.(CA) 14 They are to bring one of each kind as an offering, a contribution to the Lord; it belongs to the priest who splashes the blood of the fellowship offering against the altar. 15 The meat of their fellowship offering of thanksgiving must be eaten on the day it is offered; they must leave none of it till morning.(CB)

16 “‘If, however, their offering is the result of a vow(CC) or is a freewill offering,(CD) the sacrifice shall be eaten on the day they offer it, but anything left over may be eaten on the next day.(CE) 17 Any meat of the sacrifice left over till the third day must be burned up.(CF) 18 If any meat of the fellowship offering(CG) is eaten on the third day, the one who offered it will not be accepted.(CH) It will not be reckoned(CI) to their credit, for it has become impure; the person who eats any of it will be held responsible.(CJ)

19 “‘Meat that touches anything ceremonially unclean must not be eaten; it must be burned up. As for other meat, anyone ceremonially clean may eat it. 20 But if anyone who is unclean(CK) eats any meat of the fellowship offering belonging to the Lord, they must be cut off from their people.(CL) 21 Anyone who touches something unclean(CM)—whether human uncleanness or an unclean animal or any unclean creature that moves along the ground[i]—and then eats any of the meat of the fellowship offering belonging to the Lord must be cut off from their people.’”

Eating Fat and Blood Forbidden

22 The Lord said to Moses, 23 “Say to the Israelites: ‘Do not eat any of the fat of cattle, sheep or goats.(CN) 24 The fat of an animal found dead or torn by wild animals(CO) may be used for any other purpose, but you must not eat it. 25 Anyone who eats the fat of an animal from which a food offering may be[j] presented to the Lord must be cut off from their people. 26 And wherever you live, you must not eat the blood(CP) of any bird or animal. 27 Anyone who eats blood(CQ) must be cut off from their people.’”

Mark 3:7-30

Crowds Follow Jesus(A)

Jesus withdrew with his disciples to the lake, and a large crowd from Galilee followed.(B) When they heard about all he was doing, many people came to him from Judea, Jerusalem, Idumea, and the regions across the Jordan and around Tyre and Sidon.(C) Because of the crowd he told his disciples to have a small boat ready for him, to keep the people from crowding him. 10 For he had healed many,(D) so that those with diseases were pushing forward to touch him.(E) 11 Whenever the impure spirits saw him, they fell down before him and cried out, “You are the Son of God.”(F) 12 But he gave them strict orders not to tell others about him.(G)

Jesus Appoints the Twelve(H)

13 Jesus went up on a mountainside and called to him those he wanted, and they came to him.(I) 14 He appointed twelve[a](J) that they might be with him and that he might send them out to preach 15 and to have authority to drive out demons.(K) 16 These are the twelve he appointed: Simon (to whom he gave the name Peter),(L) 17 James son of Zebedee and his brother John (to them he gave the name Boanerges, which means “sons of thunder”), 18 Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, Simon the Zealot 19 and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.

Jesus Accused by His Family and by Teachers of the Law(M)(N)

20 Then Jesus entered a house, and again a crowd gathered,(O) so that he and his disciples were not even able to eat.(P) 21 When his family[b] heard about this, they went to take charge of him, for they said, “He is out of his mind.”(Q)

22 And the teachers of the law who came down from Jerusalem(R) said, “He is possessed by Beelzebul!(S) By the prince of demons he is driving out demons.”(T)

23 So Jesus called them over to him and began to speak to them in parables:(U) “How can Satan(V) drive out Satan? 24 If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. 25 If a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand. 26 And if Satan opposes himself and is divided, he cannot stand; his end has come. 27 In fact, no one can enter a strong man’s house without first tying him up. Then he can plunder the strong man’s house.(W) 28 Truly I tell you, people can be forgiven all their sins and every slander they utter, 29 but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; they are guilty of an eternal sin.”(X)

30 He said this because they were saying, “He has an impure spirit.”

Psalm 37:1-11

Psalm 37[a]

Of David.

Do not fret because of those who are evil
or be envious(A) of those who do wrong;(B)
for like the grass they will soon wither,(C)
like green plants they will soon die away.(D)

Trust in the Lord and do good;
dwell in the land(E) and enjoy safe pasture.(F)
Take delight(G) in the Lord,
and he will give you the desires of your heart.(H)

Commit your way to the Lord;
trust in him(I) and he will do this:
He will make your righteous reward(J) shine like the dawn,(K)
your vindication like the noonday sun.

Be still(L) before the Lord
and wait patiently(M) for him;
do not fret(N) when people succeed in their ways,(O)
when they carry out their wicked schemes.(P)

Refrain from anger(Q) and turn from wrath;
do not fret(R)—it leads only to evil.
For those who are evil will be destroyed,(S)
but those who hope(T) in the Lord will inherit the land.(U)

10 A little while, and the wicked will be no more;(V)
though you look for them, they will not be found.
11 But the meek will inherit the land(W)
and enjoy peace and prosperity.(X)

Leviticus 4:1-5:19, Mark 2:13-3:6, Psalms 36:1-12, Proverbs 10:1-2

Today is the 17th day of February, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I’m Brian it’s great, great, great to be here with you today for the last time from Rome, at least for now. This…a couple hours we’ll be boarding the flight over to Tel Aviv and then getting about the business of preparing for the Daily Audio Bible pilgrimage 2020. So, thank you for your continued prayers. Definitely been battling the fatigue but that’s just kind of…that’s part of it, but another day or two and we’ll be acclimated. Anyway, we’ve come here together to allow God’s word to wash into our lives and to carry us forward into this week. And, so let’s do that. We’re reading from the New International Version this week and we have begun the book of Leviticus and I…I think it was yesterday…I think it was yesterday I mentioned this, you know, this is a book of the law. So, we’re kind of reading a law book, So, we could go, “well, this is…this is different. Like what…what happened? It got boring all the sudden” or whatever but we need to pay attention to the different literary styles that are going on. We love the narrative style, right, because it’s telling us a story. This happened, then this happened next, then this happened next and then there was this drama, and then this happened next, whereas now we’re…we’re kind of reading the ordinances and laws that will govern and…and actually create and hold together this people that God has chosen who He has brought into the wilderness so that he might dwell among His people, but also so that they might become acutely aware that there is no hope outside of God. So, today we’ll read Leviticus chapters 4 and 5.

Commentary:

Okay, let’s talk about the riveting story being told in the book of Leviticus right now. I understand it’s not a riveting story. It’s a lot to do with sacrifices and atoning for sin and it’s very involved. Like, there’s a lot of…a lot to do. So, what’s the deal here? Like the most high God likes to smell burning animal carcasses? Like He just…He loves and that’s why He wants all these sacrifices. Is that what’s going on here? We will find throughout the Scriptures that God will comment on this and tell us, “no” that’s not what He’s after. He has a people who are former slaves who have no idea how to be anything else who are a stiff necked and rebellious people who have already turned to false gods in the wilderness after all they saw God do to bring them out of Egypt and He’s trying to draw them to Himself and give them, bestow upon them an identity as chosen, no longer slaves, you are chosen. So, what could destroy all that? Like what would mess that plan up? Sin. It always messes the plan up. And, so, we’re seeing get kinda woven into the fabric of this new culture. Sin is a big deal. It’s complicated. There’s a lot to do. But it’s also costly. So, we can like read the book of the law, we can read the laws and here’s a people are supposed to do and we can just be like yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah but let’s personalize this…like…let’s make this personal. We’re out in the desert and as the Bible has said today, we…we discovered, we…we realized that we had rebelled against God in some way. So, we become aware that something is come between us and God. And our hearts, we feel it, we sense it, we know it, we need to repent, and a sacrifice is required in this new culture. And, so, we have to go to our flock, and we have to select a goat or sheep, whatever the case may be, we have to select a perfect one and there aren’t too many of those. And we’ve been raising, we’ve been raising this livestock, we’ve…we’ve been shepherding this livestock. They have names, they know our voice. We’re…we care for them and we have to take the perfect one and lead it to the altar and then we have to take its life right there. We would probably not walk away from that experience feeling really really awesome about our sin. We would be can continually reminded of the price of sin. We would be continually reminded that…that this rebellion that can live in us, that can…that can have us doing crazy things like worshiping false gods in the wilderness, this will destroy our relationship with God. And, so, he’s weaving it in. This is a big deal, a costly deal, a complicated deal because we need to be reminded how dangerous it is.

So, now Jesus has come and as we learn the Scriptures, He became the final sacrifice. So, we don’t need to keep a flock of goats just in case. We look to the cross. And…and in truth if we’re just…if we’re just honest here. Yes, we would not want to go back to a sacrificial system in any way whatsoever. But when you look at it in its context and what it is teaching, you understand that it is a continual reminder of how dangerous and devastating rebellion and sin against God can be. Now we look to the cross, but often we don't…often we don’t look to the cross and see the sacrifice upon that cross, dying in our place. So, yes, our sins are forgiven, but we should never forget what it cost. And we see that not forgetting what it cost is important to God because here in the Old Testament in Leviticus He’s bit building in a very tangible reminder.

Prayer:

Jesus, we thank You, we thank You for Your sacrifice. We take this moment as we’re…as we’re observing the giving of the law and…and sacrifices for sin, it brings us back to You. And we confess that so often we’re just…just taking it for granted…it’s just a foregone conclusion. Of course, we’ve been forgiven but we don’t often slow down and understand what it cost. So, we ask Holy Spirit that You would come and remind us throughout this day, that we would take it to heart, that…that this wouldn’t be something that we just grow jaded to, that we just get used to, that…that we would remember what it took to bring us our freedom. We pray this in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Announcements:

dailyaudiobible.com is the website, it’s home base, it’s where you find what going on around here.

So, yeah, what’s going on around here for the next bit is the pilgrimage, the annual pilgrimage that we take to the land of the Bible each year. So, we had a little stop for a couple of days to do some photography and filming in Italy in Rome and we were able to see a lot of just the archaeological ruins from the Roman empire time, really…really connecting those stories back into Israel. Israel, of course, at the time of Jesus was the province of Syria was the province of the Roman Empire. So, there are a good deal of Roman Empire artifacts and ruins in Israel as well. So, today we will fly over to Tel Aviv and then, yeah, begin unpacking and getting ready for the excursion we’re gonna be on.

Tomorrow evening is our inaugural dinner and kinda orientation. And that’s always so fun finally to get everybody completely wide-eyed and wired on adrenaline but completely like backwards in their body clock. It’s just such…so…such a strange sensation but such fun. And, so, we’re looking forward to that. I will be making what I believe will be my final attempt to get to the ancient ruins of this Philistine stronghold known in the Bible as Akron. And years past…those of you like that have been around the Daily Audio Bible for several years, you’ll know…like we’ve made two different attempts because there are five Philistine cities spoken of in the Bible and we filmed three of them. And Akron is the fourth one. The fifth one is Gaza and that’s not anywhere near safe to go to and from what I understand there’s really nothing…there’s no archaeology there. So, I’ve been trying to get the…the…the…the film and the…the photographs of this place for several times but it's…like there are lots and lots of archaeological sites in Israel. And…but not all of them are accessible or visitible. You have to like go out in a four-wheel-drive way out somewhere and this is…this is kind of one of them and we’ve been stuck twice, two different years having to get pulled out of fields by tractors, last year being the most recent attempt. This year I’m pretty sure we are prepared. So, that’ll be tomorrow on the way down to Ashdod where we will all meet up and begin our journey.

So, thank you to everyone out there for your continued prayers over all of this. We’ll need it. We’ll need it every single day and we appreciate it more than you know.

I’ll remind you the Israel 2021 pilgrimage is now…we’re now…we’re now receiving registrations for next year’s trip, which is about a year from now. All of our Daily Audio Bible events and trips fill up pretty fast. This this one will probably be mostly, if not completely full by the time we get back. So, yeah, you can check it out at dailyaudiobible.com. Look in the Initiatives section and you’ll find Israel 2021 and you’ll get all of the details, everything that you would need to know. And, yeah, looking forward to seeing you next year in Jerusalem.

If you want to partner with the Daily Audio Bible, thank you, thank you, thank you. I can’t thank you enough. We wouldn’t be here if we weren’t in this together. So, I thank you. There is a link on the homepage. If you’re using the Daily Audio Bible app, you can press the Give button in the upper right-hand corner or, if you prefer, the mailing address is PO Box 1996 Spring Hill Tennessee 37174.

And, as always, if you have a prayer request a comment you can hit the Hotline button in the app, the little red button at the top or you can dial 877-942-4253.

And that’s it for today. I’m Brian I love you and I’ll be waiting for you here tomorrow.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hey DABber family my name’s Mark from Columbus Ohio and I’ve called and once. I’m still relatively new, just started listening last summer __ participate with this family being able to start the day off with the word of God has…has…has been quite…quite…beneficial to me. And I am a COPD…end-stage COPD I’ve been diagnosed and as I’m calling for prayer because I need faith. And I worked so hard last summer to…to qualify for __ reduction surgery and my CO2 levels would go down and stay down. Now they’ve tried to __ have a transplant team. They’re telling me that one of the reasons…one of the qualifications is I need someone to take care of me 24 hours a day, you know, 24 day care after surgery but they do want it to be anyone from a healthcare agency, they want it to be a family or friend, you know, a family member or friend. And I’m…I’m not, you know, I don’t have that, you know. And I guess they all have their own agenda. I just, you know, and not being able qualify for this LVIS last summer, not being able to meet the requirements of this other thing, it just doesn’t do a whole lot for my faith. You know, I keep inquiring, I keep asking God what His will is and I just…I don’t know…I don’t know. You know, He knows what I’m trying to do, He knows my hopes, He knows my dreams __ you know…

Hi family this is Janice calling from Goodyear Arizona and I just have an encouragement for sweet Laura B in Boynton Beach. Sweetie your message for your friend Ricky really touched my heart and I have put him in my prayer book, and I promise to keep praying for Ricky and yourself that you are and encourager as I try to be. So, God bless you honey. And on another note my husband David who fell and got a concussion and went into a coma, he has a doctor’s appointment today. The doctors are just freaked out because the brain bleed is gone and there was no swelling and he’s back to his old self. So, praise God and thank you for your prayers. I love you all and I’ll be in touch again soon. God bless you.

Good morning DAB family this is Terry from Kansas City and I think I’d love to change my name to Blessed by Jesus. I used to live in Albuquerque for almost 34 years and so this morning on February 11th as I heard Marlowe from Albuquerque, Marla I felt that I know you and I could just feel a connection about being a little socially awkward, you call it social anxiety and that’s how I should refer to it for you. I was so excited to hear that God had allowed you to feel comfortable meeting Suzanne and my prayer for you is that you will continue to be able to reach out to her and that God will move you forward and give you wonderful days meeting wonderful people and that is my prayer for you. And also, God’s Little Bird, I was a substitute teacher for many, many years and I can feel your angst in wanting to serve your students and do that and proclaim Christ in your actions and in the way that you love on them. I am praying that God will give you clarity as to what to do in your profession or whether or not to leave your profession but I challenge you to continue to serve your students in godly excellence knowing what He wants you to present to those students. And I want to remind you that you are planting seeds. Whether or not you’re able to see the fruit of your efforts I don’t know but somewhere down the line those students are going to shine because they had you as a teacher. I pray for your peace, your mental and spiritual protection while you’re in the classroom, and I pray that joy will be restored to you…

Hey Daily Audio Bible family I’m calling into pray for God’s Little Bird. Today is the 10th maybe…no it’s the 11th…today is the 11th. She called in, she’s a teacher, and she’s struggling because the kids that come through…and it’s interesting that she called when she did because immediately before her, I think it was immediately before her, a woman called and prayed for the kids in the Daily Audio Bible listeners…but I just wanted to give you some encouragement God’s Little Bird. God is using you. As a Christian teaching kids in this country you are so, so, so, so, so important. So, it’s…it’s not going to be easy because you have to stand as…as a pillar of light in just an absolute hurricane because people who suddenly refuse to believe God instill those values into their kids and their kids go out into school and eventually the workplace and they may never come into contact with a Christian who could be the difference between life and death, between heaven and hell. So, I just want to encourage you that if you can be a witness to even one of those kids then every day of the decades that you will have invested in this career will be so worth it. And we will see that child in eternity. So, I encourage you to pray about it, but please just know that on behalf of an older sister to kids in the school system that I am so grateful for teachers like you. God bless you. Bye.

[singing starts] One peace like a river attendeth my way when sorrows like sea billows roll. Whatever my lot thou has taught thee to say it is well, it is well with my soul [singing ends]. Father God thank You that we can say that when we are in the midst of the storms of this life. Father God thank You so much for this day. I pray Lord that You would be going before us and preparing it for us, that You’d be giving us strength and energy and courage to face this day, that You’d also be giving us patience to wait upon You and to listen to You. Thank You for what You are teaching us this day. Thank You for Your blessings this day. Thank You for those opportunities. Lord it’s so easy to get dragged down into the misery of…of the world and the general drudge of living as it can feel sometimes. Help us to fix our eyes upon You. Help us to keep running forward, moving forward towards the goal. In Jesus’ holy and precious name. Amen. Hi guys, Michaela from Gloucester. Hope You have a blessed day wherever You are.

Leviticus 4-5

The Sin Offering

The Lord said to Moses, “Say to the Israelites: ‘When anyone sins unintentionally(A) and does what is forbidden in any of the Lord’s commands(B)

“‘If the anointed priest(C) sins,(D) bringing guilt on the people, he must bring to the Lord a young bull(E) without defect(F) as a sin offering[a](G) for the sin he has committed.(H) He is to present the bull at the entrance to the tent of meeting before the Lord.(I) He is to lay his hand on its head and slaughter it there before the Lord. Then the anointed priest shall take some of the bull’s blood(J) and carry it into the tent of meeting. He is to dip his finger into the blood and sprinkle(K) some of it seven times before the Lord,(L) in front of the curtain of the sanctuary.(M) The priest shall then put some of the blood on the horns(N) of the altar of fragrant incense that is before the Lord in the tent of meeting. The rest of the bull’s blood he shall pour out at the base of the altar(O) of burnt offering(P) at the entrance to the tent of meeting. He shall remove all the fat(Q) from the bull of the sin offering—all the fat that is connected to the internal organs, both kidneys with the fat on them near the loins, and the long lobe of the liver, which he will remove with the kidneys(R) 10 just as the fat is removed from the ox[b](S) sacrificed as a fellowship offering.(T) Then the priest shall burn them on the altar of burnt offering.(U) 11 But the hide of the bull and all its flesh, as well as the head and legs, the internal organs and the intestines(V) 12 that is, all the rest of the bull—he must take outside the camp(W) to a place ceremonially clean,(X) where the ashes(Y) are thrown, and burn it(Z) there in a wood fire on the ash heap.(AA)

13 “‘If the whole Israelite community sins unintentionally(AB) and does what is forbidden in any of the Lord’s commands, even though the community is unaware of the matter, when they realize their guilt 14 and the sin they committed becomes known, the assembly must bring a young bull(AC) as a sin offering(AD) and present it before the tent of meeting. 15 The elders(AE) of the community are to lay their hands(AF) on the bull’s head(AG) before the Lord, and the bull shall be slaughtered before the Lord.(AH) 16 Then the anointed priest is to take some of the bull’s blood(AI) into the tent of meeting. 17 He shall dip his finger into the blood and sprinkle(AJ) it before the Lord(AK) seven times in front of the curtain. 18 He is to put some of the blood(AL) on the horns of the altar that is before the Lord(AM) in the tent of meeting. The rest of the blood he shall pour out at the base of the altar(AN) of burnt offering at the entrance to the tent of meeting. 19 He shall remove all the fat(AO) from it and burn it on the altar,(AP) 20 and do with this bull just as he did with the bull for the sin offering. In this way the priest will make atonement(AQ) for the community, and they will be forgiven.(AR) 21 Then he shall take the bull outside the camp(AS) and burn it as he burned the first bull. This is the sin offering for the community.(AT)

22 “‘When a leader(AU) sins unintentionally(AV) and does what is forbidden in any of the commands of the Lord his God, when he realizes his guilt 23 and the sin he has committed becomes known, he must bring as his offering a male goat(AW) without defect. 24 He is to lay his hand on the goat’s head and slaughter it at the place where the burnt offering is slaughtered before the Lord.(AX) It is a sin offering.(AY) 25 Then the priest shall take some of the blood of the sin offering with his finger and put it on the horns of the altar(AZ) of burnt offering and pour out the rest of the blood at the base of the altar.(BA) 26 He shall burn all the fat on the altar as he burned the fat of the fellowship offering. In this way the priest will make atonement(BB) for the leader’s sin, and he will be forgiven.(BC)

27 “‘If any member of the community sins unintentionally(BD) and does what is forbidden in any of the Lord’s commands, when they realize their guilt 28 and the sin they have committed becomes known, they must bring as their offering(BE) for the sin they committed a female goat(BF) without defect. 29 They are to lay their hand on the head(BG) of the sin offering(BH) and slaughter it at the place of the burnt offering.(BI) 30 Then the priest is to take some of the blood with his finger and put it on the horns of the altar of burnt offering(BJ) and pour out the rest of the blood at the base of the altar. 31 They shall remove all the fat, just as the fat is removed from the fellowship offering, and the priest shall burn it on the altar(BK) as an aroma pleasing to the Lord.(BL) In this way the priest will make atonement(BM) for them, and they will be forgiven.(BN)

32 “‘If someone brings a lamb(BO) as their sin offering, they are to bring a female without defect.(BP) 33 They are to lay their hand on its head and slaughter it(BQ) for a sin offering(BR) at the place where the burnt offering is slaughtered.(BS) 34 Then the priest shall take some of the blood of the sin offering with his finger and put it on the horns of the altar of burnt offering and pour out the rest of the blood at the base of the altar.(BT) 35 They shall remove all the fat, just as the fat is removed from the lamb of the fellowship offering, and the priest shall burn it on the altar(BU) on top of the food offerings presented to the Lord. In this way the priest will make atonement for them for the sin they have committed, and they will be forgiven.

“‘If anyone sins because they do not speak up when they hear a public charge to testify(BV) regarding something they have seen or learned about, they will be held responsible.(BW)

“‘If anyone becomes aware that they are guilty—if they unwittingly touch anything ceremonially unclean (whether the carcass of an unclean animal, wild or domestic, or of any unclean creature that moves along the ground)(BX) and they are unaware that they have become unclean,(BY) but then they come to realize their guilt; or if they touch human uncleanness(BZ) (anything that would make them unclean)(CA) even though they are unaware of it, but then they learn of it and realize their guilt; or if anyone thoughtlessly takes an oath(CB) to do anything, whether good or evil(CC) (in any matter one might carelessly swear about) even though they are unaware of it, but then they learn of it and realize their guilt— when anyone becomes aware that they are guilty in any of these matters, they must confess(CD) in what way they have sinned. As a penalty for the sin they have committed, they must bring to the Lord a female lamb or goat(CE) from the flock as a sin offering[c];(CF) and the priest shall make atonement(CG) for them for their sin.

“‘Anyone who cannot afford(CH) a lamb(CI) is to bring two doves or two young pigeons(CJ) to the Lord as a penalty for their sin—one for a sin offering and the other for a burnt offering. They are to bring them to the priest, who shall first offer the one for the sin offering. He is to wring its head from its neck,(CK) not dividing it completely,(CL) and is to splash(CM) some of the blood of the sin offering against the side of the altar;(CN) the rest of the blood must be drained out at the base of the altar.(CO) It is a sin offering. 10 The priest shall then offer the other as a burnt offering in the prescribed way(CP) and make atonement(CQ) for them for the sin they have committed, and they will be forgiven.(CR)

11 “‘If, however, they cannot afford(CS) two doves or two young pigeons,(CT) they are to bring as an offering for their sin a tenth of an ephah[d](CU) of the finest flour(CV) for a sin offering. They must not put olive oil or incense on it, because it is a sin offering. 12 They are to bring it to the priest, who shall take a handful of it as a memorial[e] portion(CW) and burn it on the altar(CX) on top of the food offerings presented to the Lord. It is a sin offering. 13 In this way the priest will make atonement(CY) for them for any of these sins they have committed, and they will be forgiven. The rest of the offering will belong to the priest,(CZ) as in the case of the grain offering.(DA)’”

The Guilt Offering

14 The Lord said to Moses: 15 “When anyone is unfaithful to the Lord by sinning unintentionally(DB) in regard to any of the Lord’s holy things, they are to bring to the Lord as a penalty(DC) a ram(DD) from the flock, one without defect and of the proper value in silver, according to the sanctuary shekel.[f](DE) It is a guilt offering.(DF) 16 They must make restitution(DG) for what they have failed to do in regard to the holy things, pay an additional penalty of a fifth of its value(DH) and give it all to the priest. The priest will make atonement for them with the ram as a guilt offering, and they will be forgiven.

17 “If anyone sins and does what is forbidden in any of the Lord’s commands, even though they do not know it,(DI) they are guilty and will be held responsible.(DJ) 18 They are to bring to the priest as a guilt offering(DK) a ram from the flock, one without defect and of the proper value. In this way the priest will make atonement for them for the wrong they have committed unintentionally, and they will be forgiven.(DL) 19 It is a guilt offering; they have been guilty of[g] wrongdoing against the Lord.”(DM)

13 Once again Jesus went out beside the lake. A large crowd came to him,(B) and he began to teach them. 14 As he walked along, he saw Levi son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax collector’s booth. “Follow me,”(C) Jesus told him, and Levi got up and followed him.

15 While Jesus was having dinner at Levi’s house, many tax collectors and sinners were eating with him and his disciples, for there were many who followed him. 16 When the teachers of the law who were Pharisees(D) saw him eating with the sinners and tax collectors, they asked his disciples: “Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?”(E)

17 On hearing this, Jesus said to them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”(F)

Jesus Questioned About Fasting(G)

18 Now John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting.(H) Some people came and asked Jesus, “How is it that John’s disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees are fasting, but yours are not?”

19 Jesus answered, “How can the guests of the bridegroom fast while he is with them? They cannot, so long as they have him with them. 20 But the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them,(I) and on that day they will fast.

21 “No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment. Otherwise, the new piece will pull away from the old, making the tear worse. 22 And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the wine will burst the skins, and both the wine and the wineskins will be ruined. No, they pour new wine into new wineskins.”

Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath(J)(K)

23 One Sabbath Jesus was going through the grainfields, and as his disciples walked along, they began to pick some heads of grain.(L) 24 The Pharisees said to him, “Look, why are they doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?”(M)

25 He answered, “Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry and in need? 26 In the days of Abiathar the high priest,(N) he entered the house of God and ate the consecrated bread, which is lawful only for priests to eat.(O) And he also gave some to his companions.”(P)

27 Then he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man,(Q) not man for the Sabbath.(R) 28 So the Son of Man(S) is Lord even of the Sabbath.”

Jesus Heals on the Sabbath

Another time Jesus went into the synagogue,(T) and a man with a shriveled hand was there. Some of them were looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, so they watched him closely(U) to see if he would heal him on the Sabbath.(V) Jesus said to the man with the shriveled hand, “Stand up in front of everyone.”

Then Jesus asked them, “Which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to kill?” But they remained silent.

He looked around at them in anger and, deeply distressed at their stubborn hearts, said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He stretched it out, and his hand was completely restored. Then the Pharisees went out and began to plot with the Herodians(W) how they might kill Jesus.(X)

Psalm 36

Psalm 36[a]

For the director of music. Of David the servant of the Lord.

I have a message from God in my heart
concerning the sinfulness of the wicked:[b](A)
There is no fear(B) of God
before their eyes.(C)

In their own eyes they flatter themselves
too much to detect or hate their sin.(D)
The words of their mouths(E) are wicked and deceitful;(F)
they fail to act wisely(G) or do good.(H)
Even on their beds they plot evil;(I)
they commit themselves to a sinful course(J)
and do not reject what is wrong.(K)

Your love, Lord, reaches to the heavens,
your faithfulness(L) to the skies.(M)
Your righteousness(N) is like the highest mountains,(O)
your justice like the great deep.(P)
You, Lord, preserve both people and animals.(Q)
How priceless is your unfailing love, O God!(R)
People take refuge in the shadow of your wings.(S)
They feast on the abundance of your house;(T)
you give them drink from your river(U) of delights.(V)
For with you is the fountain of life;(W)
in your light(X) we see light.

10 Continue your love(Y) to those who know you,(Z)
your righteousness to the upright in heart.(AA)
11 May the foot of the proud not come against me,
nor the hand of the wicked(AB) drive me away.
12 See how the evildoers lie fallen—
thrown down, not able to rise!(AC)

Leviticus 1:1-3:17, Mark 1:29-2:12, Psalms 35:17-28, Proverbs 9:13-18

Today is the 16th day of February, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I’m Brian it’s great to be here with you today. So weird coming to you from Rome. We spent yesterday working through jetlag but also working to capture film and photographs of some of the places here that intersect with the New Testament and will be continuing that journey through today and then moving to Israel tomorrow where we will get ready to begin the annual Daily Audio Bible pilgrimage but we talk about all that later. Let’s move into the Scriptures for today. And guess what? We finished the book of Exodus yesterday, even as we were beginning the gospel of Mark. So, we have fresh books in front of us.

Introduction to the book of Leviticus:

So, Leviticus is the third book of the Torah, of the Pentateuch, the third book of the Old Testament and it was written to the children of Israel. And…I mean…we’re in the middle of the desert at this point in the story and God is establishing the terms of the covenant between himself and the nation of Israel that is being formed and it’s about a year since they’ve been out of Egypt, and the law is being given. And…and as…as we pay attention to this…and this is one of those areas where it’s like, this is a law book we’re about to read. So, we can zone out pretty easily because who goes to the library to get a law book to read unless you’re an attorney or something? But if we’ll pay attention to what’s going on here, we’ll…we’ll see the plot behind the story, right? We talked about that the other day. We’ll see that everything that is being instituted is for a reason about these people’s identity - who they are and who God is. And, so, we’ll see that this…this theme that God wants fellowship, but that fellowship can only happen through holiness is a huge thing. He’s…He says in this book, “I am holy therefore, you will be holy. So, if…I mean…if we just read Leviticus, just listen to the words not really, you know, paying attention to…other than what’s going on then we’ll see a lot of blood in this book because there’s a lot of sacrifices in it. And if we look at the Old Testament, which is…which is ancient through the perspective of the culture that we live in right now, then yeah, it will seem barbaric and antiquated and the irrelevant and all of the things that people have said over the years but it’s not. Like, we might…we might wonder like “why…why would they just start sacrificing animals? Why would God want animal sacrifices and for them to be burned up on an altar?” So, it’s like six weeks ago now that we began our journey and we were in the garden of Eden and we saw Adam and Eve and their rebellion. We talked about this. That separated them from God. And, so, when God came look for them in the cool of the evening they were hiding, and they eventually tell God that they were afraid because they were naked. And what God does is telling here - He covers them with the skins of animals. So, it was God who set this precedent of atonement and covering. It cost something to cover the man and the woman, it cost the life of an animal. So, like now in this church era that we live in we’re in a culture that…that’s after Jesus came with the final sacrifice. And, so, all of that sacrificial stuff is antiquated to us and far outdated to us, but it wasn’t then. And let’s not forget what that final sacrifice, the one Jesus made looked like because it put on display all the barbarity of mankind. But God is baking into this culture, that sin comes at a great cost. So, you might’ve made it this far in the Bible before. You might have made it to Leviticus before and then started like, “I have…I don’t how to relate to this.” Embrace it. What you’re watching is the establishment of a culture by a sovereign God, a culture that is intended to show a fallen man the great price of its rebellion, and the great price of this separation, but to also reveal the most high God in His holiness and to understand that this people is invited into that holiness. And the whole thing is happening in the harshness of the desert wastelands where there’s nowhere for them to run. Like they’re not going to go to the grocery store and pick up some corn. Like, there in the desert. There’s no place for them to resupply. And that’s where we find ourselves as we begin the book of Leviticus chapter 1 through 3 today. And it’s a brand-new week so we’ll read from the New International Version this week.

Prayer:

Thank You, Father for Your word. Oh Lord we love You and we thank You for bringing us into this new week and as discombobulated as travel, especially as international travel can be, we are so grateful for the opportunity to be on this pilgrimage and, indeed, we thank You for all that we are being able to see and experience. We thank You for context. We thank You for illuminating the story that is in the Bible so that we can more clearly sense You’re leading on the narrow path that leads to life, because it’s a counterintuitive path and so often we find ourselves off of it, so we thank You for all of the ways in a year that You come for us through Your word and through each other and through the experiences that we share. And, so we invite You fully into every aspect of all that will be happening in the coming days. Come Holy Spirit we pray in the name of Jesus, we ask. Amen.

Announcements:

dailyaudiobible.com is the website, home base, it’s where you find out what’s going on around here. So, stay tuned and stay connected,

For the next couple of weeks what’s gonna be going on around here is…is travel, the annual pilgrimage that we take as a community to the land of the Bible. So, we…we stopped over for two days here in Rome to capture some things. So, man, we got to visit some…some parts of the Vatican yesterday. I’ve never been so it’s like, yeah, pretty overwhelming…pretty…pretty overwhelming. But on a more sobering note we were also able to…to visit a prison where Paul had been kept and also the…the place of his…his execution and his…his burial. He’s…he’s…like he’s buried here as is the apostle Peter. So, I’ve posted some things on the Daily Audio Bible Facebook page, some pictures and stuff of what we’re seeing, what’s going on. And I’ve mentioned that a couple times. This is a good time to follow the Daily Audio Bible Facebook page or on Instagram, Daily Audio Bible on Instagram Facebook.com/dailyaudiobible on Facebook . That’ll keep you connected to the…to the…the pilgrimage that we’re on because we’re kind of posting photographs, little videos, and stuff like that at as they happen at different places. So, it’s kind of updated throughout the day and you can kinda check back and see what’s going on. We’ll be seeing some of ancient…of the ancient ruins of Rome and I’m very much looking forward to that today. There are just a lot of Roman ruins in the land of Israel and the biblical lands because at one point it was a part of the Roman Empire. It was a part of the Roman Empire during Jesus life and ministry. It was the Romans who executed Jesus. So, I have been familiar with the architecture and the aqueducts and just some of the magnificent places there but just sort of connect those dots to Rome itself and just sort of see some of the ancients archaeology that remains is…is gonna be great, so we’ll be posting some pictures of that today and then trying…trying to turn the corner on the jetlag as we prepare to fly over to Tel Aviv tomorrow. So, thank you for your continued prayers.

And I remind you that it is our intention to come back again next year and we pray every year. I don’t know…I don’t know how many years out, but we are planning to come back in 2021 and that pilgrimage is available for registration now as I have mentioned before. You can get all the details at dailyaudiobible.com in the Initiatives section, just look for Israel 2021 and you’ll be able to get all of the details they’re. Looking forward to that. And as I have mentioned usually by the time this pilgrimage is over that 2021 will be mostly full, if not all the way full. So, if it’s been on your bucket list then…then check it out. Hope to…hope to see you sometime. It is a life changing experience. It’s weird because I’ve been many times but it’s a life-changing experience every…every time for me. So, check it out,

If you want to partner with the Daily Audio Bible you can do that at dailyaudiobible.com. And I thank you, I thank you profoundly for your partnership. Community Prayer and Praise:

Hi family this is his little Cherry in Canada and Brian has been reading to us from the Old Testament about the priests and their garments and all of the rituals and rigor murals that they have to go through simply to enter God’s presence and not die. And it’s not that God is waiting to zap them, it’s just that when you are dealing with a gazillion volts of electricity there are certain precautions that you have to make or you will die and God knows that. But I’ve just been so struck by how the blood of Jesus accomplished what generations of Levitical priesthood could not and now it is so effortless for us to enter God’s presence. I simply open my eyes in the morning and step into the arms who has waited for me all night. I can simply, without washing my face, without putting on certain clothing, without even praying, I can simply step into His arms and saying. [singing] in Your flowering arms in Your flowering arms there is nothing I must do but trust in You and rest. In Your flowering arms in Your flowering arms there is nothing I must bring. I sit and sing and rest. In Your flowering arms in Your flowering arms there is nothing I must be but your little Cherry I rest in Your flowering arms [sing ends].

Hi DAB family this is Nadine formally of New Hampshire now a resident of Maine. I learned that on February 3rd my father…my husband filed for divorce so pretty much just a waiting game until I get the paperwork. I just ask that you lift me up and get…pray for strength for myself and for him as well. I don’t know where I’m headed now. I’m sad and I’m broken but I can’t change things. So, just give it to God and go with the flow and just pray that my journey ahead is more than I dreamed of. Thank you.

Hi Daily Audio Bible this is Paula calling from the small island in the sea on the East Coast of Canada. I just want to say I can’t believe how God has changed my life to this broadcast. I was scrambling up an embankment with satan hanging on my heels reaching up to God. My life was in a mire and God scooped me up and without all the forcefulness of father holding onto his most prized possession he said mine to Satan and lifted me up and He has blessed me immensely through this podcast. I am amazed at what God has put before me. It is my life better? No. And understatement? No. But oh how much easier it is to handle each and every day as I join you and I hear your prayers. I pray for each and every one of you as you pray. I pray for the boys as their mom Diane spends her last days and how they need to be embraced and for the Toni’s and Bob the Budgie. And it’s just amazing how it’s simple little tweets in the background can make everything so happy. And I just feel like…like I’ve come home and you guys have pulled out the chair and patted it and said, come, come sit at the supper table. Come dine with us as we eat and of our in God’s word. And I just want to say thank you thank you so much for being yourself. I see myself in so many of you, some places I am now and some places I’ve been and I’ve been…I’m going…I’m not going to go into that. I just want to say thank you. Thank you for all you’ve done. Thank you for just being there. God bless you and I will be calling back. Thank you so much.

Hello Daily Audio Bible family this is Denise from a lot of different places but I’m in Charlotte North Carolina this minute and I just wanted to reach out to Christie from Florida/Ohio who called in and her prayer or update was played at the hour and 30 minute mark of the community prayer on February 9th and she let us all know that she was the anonymous caller from 1/6 who called in right after finding out that her sister had committed suicide. And Christie I’m so glad to know who you are. I’m so sorry for your sister and I’m sorry to find out that you’ve just lost a grandfather. I, on Mondays, have started praying for the grieving and one of the line items I have is 1/6 anonymous who lost her sister to suicide and I’m just so blessed to know that who your name is and who am praying for. Also, I’m happy to hear that you are going home to Ohio. I know that something that you have wanted and I know it’s not under the circumstances that you would’ve wished but God makes a way and if I had my Bible open I would read to you from Deuteronomy 1 but I’m not near my Bible this minute but it talks about how, you know, Moses comes down from the mountain and tells the Israelites you have gathered at this mountain too long it is time to go and he lists all these geographical places he says it’s time to go to the home of your ancestors. And any time anyone tells me they’re going home, going back to the place where there from I’m always reminded of that part in Deuteronomy and I am just happy that this is a fruition of something that you have wanted and I bless the way and I asked Father to give Christie from now all the way Ohio just for provision for the job that she’s looking for that she can be near her parents to minister them and have…be able to use her skills. And Father I just ask that you give peace to their hearts as they all come together as a family and that you watch over them in your mighty mighty name. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Good morning DABbers this is Nancy in Oregon I just want to say I’ve been to the Bible the whole entire Bible. Today is my anniversary. It was a year…a little over a year ago that I was listening to the archive. So, today is a full day or a full year that I listened to the Bible. I’ve never done that before and am just pretty excited. But on January 31 I have gone through from Genesis to Exodus with you guys. I appreciate all your songs, your poems, your support, your encouragement, your prayers, your support. Just keep praying that I can do this. Some days I go through this the serenity prayer – God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change __ I can’t go any further. So, just pray that I get through that, that I can just get and accept things that I cannot change and the courage to change the things that I can and the wisdom to know the difference. I’m hanging in there. I’m going to CR and it’s the faith-based kind of like __ with families and__ other things that I’m __ for. Thank you for your support, your encouragement. I love you guys and I’m sharing this program with others so that it they can enjoy it too and go to the Bible. God’s glory. It’s all about Jesus. Jesus and nothing but Jesus. Thank you so much. Bye-bye.

Hi Daily Audio Bible my name is Lisa I’m calling from Central Florida it’s Monday, February 10th. The reason for my call is I would like to ask for prayers for my husband Michael. He was diagnosed with ocular melanoma 18 years ago. He’s had some issues, health issues that we’re addressing the different diagnostic testing - CT scan, upper G.I., and that type of thing. I’m very worried about him. He doesn’t take care of himself and he hasn’t health wise for someone who had cancer. And I just wish that he would, you know, realize that my son and I really want him to be around and to start taking care of himself when he should. I just ask for prayers for him for these testings that are coming up and I just pray that everything’s okay and that he realizes that we do love him and want him to be around and just to start taking care of himself. I appreciate all prayers. Thank you very much. I recently started listening January 1st. My son Dylan actually introduced me to the Daily Audio Bible, and it’s been a blessing ever since. I made a New Year’s resolution that I was gonna start listening and I have listened every day since January 1st and I listen to all the prayers and I pray for all of you. It’s just amazing to me all that Brian has done, and I appreciate it and I thank you and I love you all. Bye-bye.

Mark 1:29-2:12

Jesus Heals Many(A)(B)

29 As soon as they left the synagogue,(C) they went with James and John to the home of Simon and Andrew. 30 Simon’s mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they immediately told Jesus about her. 31 So he went to her, took her hand and helped her up.(D) The fever left her and she began to wait on them.

32 That evening after sunset the people brought to Jesus all the sick and demon-possessed.(E) 33 The whole town gathered at the door, 34 and Jesus healed many who had various diseases.(F) He also drove out many demons, but he would not let the demons speak because they knew who he was.(G)

Jesus Prays in a Solitary Place(H)

35 Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.(I) 36 Simon and his companions went to look for him, 37 and when they found him, they exclaimed: “Everyone is looking for you!”

38 Jesus replied, “Let us go somewhere else—to the nearby villages—so I can preach there also. That is why I have come.”(J) 39 So he traveled throughout Galilee, preaching in their synagogues(K) and driving out demons.(L)

Jesus Heals a Man With Leprosy(M)

40 A man with leprosy[a] came to him and begged him on his knees,(N) “If you are willing, you can make me clean.”

41 Jesus was indignant.[b] He reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!” 42 Immediately the leprosy left him and he was cleansed.

43 Jesus sent him away at once with a strong warning: 44 “See that you don’t tell this to anyone.(O) But go, show yourself to the priest(P) and offer the sacrifices that Moses commanded for your cleansing,(Q) as a testimony to them.” 45 Instead he went out and began to talk freely, spreading the news. As a result, Jesus could no longer enter a town openly but stayed outside in lonely places.(R) Yet the people still came to him from everywhere.(S)

Jesus Forgives and Heals a Paralyzed Man(T)

A few days later, when Jesus again entered Capernaum, the people heard that he had come home. They gathered in such large numbers(U) that there was no room left, not even outside the door, and he preached the word to them. Some men came, bringing to him a paralyzed man,(V) carried by four of them. Since they could not get him to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof above Jesus by digging through it and then lowered the mat the man was lying on. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralyzed man, “Son, your sins are forgiven.”(W)

Now some teachers of the law were sitting there, thinking to themselves, “Why does this fellow talk like that? He’s blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?”(X)

Immediately Jesus knew in his spirit that this was what they were thinking in their hearts, and he said to them, “Why are you thinking these things? Which is easier: to say to this paralyzed man, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up, take your mat and walk’? 10 But I want you to know that the Son of Man(Y) has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the man, 11 “I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.” 12 He got up, took his mat and walked out in full view of them all. This amazed everyone and they praised God,(Z) saying, “We have never seen anything like this!”(AA)

  1. Mark 1:40 The Greek word traditionally translated leprosy was used for various diseases affecting the skin.
  2. Mark 1:41 Many manuscripts Jesus was filled with compassion

Psalm 35:17-28

17 How long,(A) Lord, will you look on?
Rescue me from their ravages,
my precious life(B) from these lions.(C)
18 I will give you thanks in the great assembly;(D)
among the throngs(E) I will praise you.(F)
19 Do not let those gloat over me
who are my enemies(G) without cause;
do not let those who hate me without reason(H)
maliciously wink the eye.(I)
20 They do not speak peaceably,
but devise false accusations(J)
against those who live quietly in the land.
21 They sneer(K) at me and say, “Aha! Aha!(L)
With our own eyes we have seen it.”

22 Lord, you have seen(M) this; do not be silent.
Do not be far(N) from me, Lord.
23 Awake,(O) and rise(P) to my defense!
Contend(Q) for me, my God and Lord.
24 Vindicate me in your righteousness, Lord my God;
do not let them gloat(R) over me.
25 Do not let them think, “Aha,(S) just what we wanted!”
or say, “We have swallowed him up.”(T)

26 May all who gloat(U) over my distress(V)
be put to shame(W) and confusion;
may all who exalt themselves over me(X)
be clothed with shame and disgrace.
27 May those who delight in my vindication(Y)
shout for joy(Z) and gladness;
may they always say, “The Lord be exalted,
who delights(AA) in the well-being of his servant.”(AB)

28 My tongue will proclaim your righteousness,(AC)
your praises all day long.(AD)

Proverbs 9:13-18

13 Folly is an unruly woman;(A)
she is simple and knows nothing.(B)
14 She sits at the door of her house,
on a seat at the highest point of the city,(C)
15 calling out(D) to those who pass by,
who go straight on their way,
16 “Let all who are simple come to my house!”
To those who have no sense(E) she says,
17 “Stolen water is sweet;
food eaten in secret is delicious!(F)
18 But little do they know that the dead are there,
that her guests are deep in the realm of the dead.(G)

Exodus 39:1-40:38, Mark 1:1-28, Psalms 35:1-16, Proverbs 9:11-12

Today is the 15th day of February, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I am Brian it’s great to be here with you today fairly…fairly disoriented from the jetlag, but welcome to Rome. We’ll be spending the next…well…today and tomorrow here capturing some film and photography of some places associated with the apostle Paul and now the apostle Peter. That includes part of the Vatican and I’ve never…never been to Italy. So, welcome to Italy. We are in route to Tel Aviv and the annual Daily Audio Bible pilgrimage in the land of the Bible. So, as disoriented as it might be and sort of not…not…quite know where you are, what day it is, and where…what’s going on and try to figure out the time difference back home and all that, it is a joy to be here and I’m sure that I can still read, I believe I can. And hey, this is this is kind of a special day. We concluded the book of Matthew yesterday. So, we’ve gone through the first of the Gospels, which means that when we get to the New Testament today, we will be beginning the gospel of Mark. And we’ll talk about that when we get there but first Exodus chapter 39 and 40. And we’re reading from the New Living Translation this week, which is today.

Introduction to the book of Mark:

Okay, like I said a couple minutes ago, we’re moving into some new territory today. We finished the book of Genesis in the Old Testament, now we finished the book of Matthew in the new and that leads us to the second gospel, at least in order and that is called the gospel of Mark. So, let’s just understand what we’re reading. Mark, you may have noticed his name wasn’t listed among the disciples that Jesus called to be his 12 because he wasn’t one of them and he wasn’t an apostle either, right? You ever hear anybody talking about the apostle Mark. He was actually more of a long-term disciple of the apostle Peter and we…we see him show up in the book of Acts. He’s also known as John Mark and he lived in Jerusalem and it appears that he came from a fairly wealthy family. His mother’s name was Mary and she had a big house and she had a servant named Rhoda. All this information is found in the book of Acts. And Mary was an early believer and so she opened her home to early believers. And, so, that’s how the church formed and spread. There’s a church tradition holds that her home may have been the place of the upper room where…where the Holy Spirit was poured out on the early believers and where Jesus had His last supper. That’s a tradition but it’s been around a long time. So, Mark was around the faith all of his life even as a boy, even as it was beginning. He was like one of the people there at the beginning. So, the apostle Peter was captured by Herod. We’ll read that story later. And…and then he was going to be executed by Herod because Herod had put some other Christians to death and found that was seemingly pleasing to the people. So, he was planning to execute Peter too and an angel came and opened the…opened the gates and let Peter out from jail. And again, this is a story that we’ll read in the book of Acts. But why it’s important is that Peter once he left the jail went to John Mark’s house and Rhoda the servant girl came to the door and she saw him, and she slammed the door in his face because she thought he was a ghost or something. Meanwhile, the house was full of believers praying for Peter. So, that gives us just a little bit of background about who Mark is. So, we see that he’s one of the first generation to grow up in the faith. He has a cousin whose name is Barnabas who was a dear friend of the apostle Paul. And Mark went with Barnabas and Paul on Paul’s first missionary journey. So, he’s got a pedigree and a church tradition holds that he…he later then became a servant or a disciple of Peter and traveled all over with Peter, even serving as an interpreter in Italy, especially in Rome. And, so, everywhere that Peter goes John Mark goes and everywhere the Peter goes, he tells the story of Jesus. So, John Mark has heard this story over and over, which would then in some ways make the contents of the gospel of Mark the testimony of Peter. And most…most scholars would agree that Mark wrote the gospel of Mark but also almost all scholars believe Mark to be the first written gospel of the account of Jesus ministry ever…ever written. And the gospel of Mark is a part of a grouping of three Gospels Matthew, Mark, and Luke and they are known as the synoptic Gospels because they are so similar, like word for word in some places. And, so, for…for centuries biblical scholars have known this, it’s not like a new discovery or anything. And, so, for centuries it’s been assumed that Mark was the first gospel and Matthew and Luke knew of the gospel of Mark, had the gospel Mark, used the gospel of Mark in composing their own Gospels. And one other unique feature about Mark is…is the language. So, we’ll read it in English, and we might notice it being a little simpler but not that big of deal, but it like…it's…it's…it’s very basic Greek. So, like…I mean this is an English program so I’m speaking English and you are able to understand English if you’re listening to this and we would know the difference between say something written or spoken by an adult or something spoken in…in the vernacular and vocabulary of say a fourth-grader. That’s basically what’s going on in the Greek with Mark. It’s not written all beautiful and all flowy and crafted with all the right words. It’s very basic. I’ve even heard scholars describe it as clunky. So, that’s a little bit of a flyover of this first gospel. And…and, so, now we enter the book of Mark with chapter 1 and we’ll read verses 1 through 28 but let’s be aware that we’re probably reading the first telling of the life of Jesus.

Prayer:

Father thank You for Your word. Thank You for bringing us safely this far of the journey. Thank You for letting us come to the land that…that all of these stories that we’re reading happened in. Thank You for letting us bear witness and we open ourselves to all that You have for us in the land. Lord, for the…for the majority of us all around the world who aren’t physically going to be traveling along, I pray that You would awaken something in their hearts as we talk it about each and every day as we share the places that we’ve been and where…what we’ve seen and what it felt like and what it looked like…and the pictures and the posts. I ask Father that You would bind us together in community as a go through this pilgrimage. We pray this in the name of Jesus our Savior. Amen.

Announcements:

dailyaudiobible.com is the website and home base for…for what’s going on around here in the community.

And what’s going on right now is our annual pilgrimage to the land of the Bible. So, here in Italy, in Rome today for the first time to…to actually capture some…some of the story that intersects here with Peter and Paul. We’re actually scheduled to go into a catacomb today that you have…have an archaeologist to get in there, but there are some…well…actually the earliest depictions of the apostle Paul, like the…the earliest kind of portrait that was painted on a wall, actually on the ceiling I believe, exists. So, yeah, we’re just kind of tracing some of this. We’ve worked hard over the years to try to bring context to the Bible because context is the thing that made the Bible start to make sense and matter. Just to kind of understand what was going on, it makes a difference…makes a difference to be able to see. It makes a huge difference to be able to visit, but it makes a big difference to be able to…to see. Like we were just reading in the gospel of Mark and Jesus is in Capernaum and He…He…He casts out an evil spirit from a person in the synagogue and it’s like, yeah, that’s there. Capernaum is there and there is a synagogue there and although it’s a more recent synagogue from Jesus time, the…the foundation of it isn’t. The foundation is the synagogue Jesus spoke in. And we’ll be visiting there in several days and posting pictures. So, like I mentioned a couple days ago I think, this is a really good time to follow the Daily Audio Bible Facebook page or at least be aware. Like it’s Facebook.com/dailyaudiobible or our Instagram page Daily Audio Bible because all throughout this journey we’ll be posting these pictures. So, like just talk about Capernaum. When we go through there, we’ll be posting pictures and sitting right on the Sea of Galilee and it makes a difference to visit but it helps to see. These are real places. These are ancient real places where these things happened. So, anyway, it’s a…it’s a good time to be aware of Instagram and…and Facebook for the Daily Audio Bible.

Then a week from today we’ll be broadcasting live. I need to get a little…I need to get my bearings before I can start talking about it. I know that it will happen like 7 PM local time and that’s usually like noon back in Nashville, but I’ll get that all squared away and let you know. That’ll be…be next Saturday., So, yeah, just asking again and it won’t be the last time. I’ll continue to ask for…for the continued prayers over all of the efforts here. I mean…I’ve been…I’ve been…been here, I’ve seen these things and the reason that we continue to do this is because you…you can't…you can’t see the Bible the same afternoon this. And it feels like the deepest calling and mission of my life to…to…do everything that I possibly can to help people never see the Bible the same again. So, although it’s a wonderful joy it’s a lot of work and there’s all lot involved. And, so, we pray over those things, over the technology, over the travel, over the vehicles, over the people, over health, over whether. There’s just a lot of variables. And, so, thank you, as a community. We’ve done this every year. Thank you for your prayers.

Okay. I better get out here.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hi this is Lisa from Phoenix. I want to call in and put a prayer request in for my mom. She’s been a faithful listener for about three years. Her and my dad listened to this the Daily Audio Bible faithfully and did this together and two years, almost 2 years ago, God took him home. And that summer my mom went out and met Brian and Jill and it was like the best gift that you could’ve have given her is to meet to meet you guys because she has grown so much by listening to this Daily Audio Bible. And I’m so thankful. She’s been my rock cause since my dad passed away and she too has prayed for me and my kids and continues too and just lifts up my sister and her family. And she just has grown so much closer to God over the years especially after my dad passed away. And right now, her health is just not well. She is going to go in on Tuesday for an injection in her back to release the inflammation that is pinching a nerve down her right leg and she barely can walk, and she can’t take pain medicine right now and she’s in so much pain. That hides it. She even went to church yesterday and just worshiped God and it just brings me such great pleasure to watch my mom. So, please pray for Jackie. I love you mom and I hope this procedure works. And if not, God, I know you know the answer.

Hello, my name is Anna Beth and I him in Auburn Alabama. I was at church this morning and was just very convicted over the fact that I have not been faithful in sharing truth with my brother, my brother who does not follow Jesus. His name is Jay. And, so, I’m just calling to pray or to ask that you would pray for me and just pray that I would have boldness, pray that I would have a heart that breaks for my brothers lost soul, and pray that the Lord would use me as his vessel, although I’m a broken vessel and I’m week and that the Lord is powerful, the Lord is strong, and the Lord is the one who convicts and the Lord is the one who grows. And, so, I just ask that, yeah, the Lord would give me a boldness and the Lord forgive be a desire to share with my brother like never before. Yeah.

Hi Daily Audio Bible my name is Samuel and I’m calling in to ask for prayer for a court date I have tomorrow. I just needed to do one thing on Friday to be able to get reinstated back on probation after a self admitted relapse on drugs and alcohol this past holiday season. However, because of a of a social anxiety disorder that I have that I can control sometimes I was not able to do what they asked me on Friday. So, I have to go in front of the judge. The last time I got in front of this judge he did not believe that the social anxiety was true because…because I don’t have health insurance, I’m not able to get it specifically diagnosed and I wasn’t able to see a doctor this weekend. So, tomorrow I have to go in standing on faith and that believing that our God is truth and standing on the truth of what I’m dealing with. And I need Daily Audio Bible DABber’s prayer as I go into this tomorrow. Hi this is Victoria Soldier just calling to pray for some of the DABber’s. I wanted to pray for my precious sister Sharon who’s afraid that she’s gonna lose out on her daughter, that her oldest daughter and she’s getting ready to move. I want to pray for you Sharon and I want to let you know that God knows where you are no matter where you are and you don’t have to…she don’t have to go where you live but God will allow you all to meet face-to-face. Gracious Father, we praise you and we just praise you and magnify you to touch our sister Sharon. Oh Lord encourage her Lord, strengthen her Lord, help her to see her through your eyes. Help her to know you more and know you’re a God that can go more places than just her home. Oh Lord you can find her daughter on the street that she’s walking on one day and then you…He knows that you’re going to be there and you’re all going to meet face-to-face. Our God can do anything but fail. Don’t be afraid of any…of anything. Just be…just meet your eyes on Him. Oh, just begin to think about Him and think about what He can do. He’s a God can do anything. Lord you bless her. You bless that daughter to come home. Lord you regulate her mind, you convict that heart. You tell her let her come to herself like the young man like the prodigal son, let her come to herself instead of __ going to my mother. Oh Lord in the name of Jesus Lord you have your way. Lord I ask You to also touch Isaac Lord and You continue to bless him, continue to strengthen him Lord. Let that forgiveness begin to penetrate and begin to give him more strength even those who are going through anxiety, those who are going through depression. Oh Lord You have Your way in the name of Jesus, You, strengthen him Lord and continue to direct his path in the name of Jesus. Lord let him know that sometimes God takes care of us before we even know we need help. Just remember that He is God and He is not man. Oh Lord we just ask…

Hello, I’m calling anonymously tonight but I’m going to attach the name pink paint I think, so I have some type of reference. I’m an artist and I love the color pink and I’m reaching out because it feels safe to reach out to this community. I’m newer to the community. So, I just really need prayer. I’m feeling really helpless. And I’m reaching out…I’m just…God doesn’t…doesn’t just have the color pink on His pallet. He has red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet, purple, white, black, brown, and then shades on top of shades on top of shades of those colors. And then when we get to heaven there’s going to be more colors we don’t even know exist, but that’s a whole nother conversation for another time. But I’m reaching out to all the colors on the pallet. I’m the color pink and I need the other colors to pray for me. Today is February 10th, it’s my birthday. I’m turning 43 today and it’s…I’m…it’s been one of the hardest times of my life and I just need prayer. God bless you all. I’m praying for you all. Thank you.

DAB family this is Laura in South Florida. I am so grateful for this program for being able to be involved with listening to God’s word every single day with all of you. Thank you, Brian, Jill, China, everyone who’s involved in producing this program to get it so we can hear it all over the global community. I am praying for all of you Brian as you travel to the promise land, all of you who will be making this pilgrimage and will be walking where Jesus walked and see where this history is made. I also will be traveling to Rome to see my grandson during is…the same time you’re traveling. But I am praying for each of you every day. I am praying…with you in heart, and spirit, and I’m praying for safety as you travel for the Lord’s blessings to be on you, for you to come home with a renewed sense of…of God in your life. And I’m thanking you Father God for this opportunity for everyone and I pray blessings and Your Holy Spirit to guide every word, every step, as they travel and bring them all home safely. Thank you, Father for Your holy word in Your precious name I pray.
