Jeremiah 37:1-38:28, 1 Timothy 6:1-21, Psalms 89:38-52, Proverbs 25:28

Today is the 21st day of October. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian. It’s good to be here with you today as we move ourselves into our workweek and start living into this shiny, sparkly, new week that we have before us as we begin to make our decisions and choices and think about things. And we have come here to allow God’s word to inform us on that and to transform our thoughts, that we might have the mind of Christ on things. And, so, we’re reading from the English Standard Version this week and we’re continuing our journey through the book of Jeremiah in the Old Testament. Today we’ll read chapters 37 and 38.

Commentary:

Okay. So, in the book of Jeremiah things…things are pretty dire in Jerusalem and life-threatening for Jeremiah. Like, there are people that want him dead now because he keeps prophesying surrender, right? And you understand that. It would be like a person prophesying in front of the White House in the United States of impending doom and that we should surrender to this country that is threatening. And that is actually what God was telling Jeremiah to say. That is actually what His will was. He was going to wipe the slate clean and a lot could have been spared, including the king’s life and including the city of Jerusalem, but they would have to walk out and surrender to the Chaldeans. So, just putting ourselves in that position, especially from like a national perspective, we’re talking about the king here. We understand the complications involved in all of that. And, so, as the factions were developing inside the city and the starvation that was ensuing in the mayhem of the city being strangled to death by this blockade, we see how things are disintegrating. So, even when people were after Jeremiah’s life, what did the king do? He said, “like, how am I going to be able to stand against you? He’s in your hands”, right? Because at this point it’s all falling apart. The only thing between the Babylonian army and the people inside Jerusalem was a wall. Like, that’s the only thing. But inside those walls, as was the plan, like this is…this is the strategy of taking this city, society is falling apart, right? So, there’s anarchy happening. So, there isn’t any unity to fight and there’s a lack of food. So, they’re growing weaker and weaker and weaker to fight. And we remember back when we began this book and all of the events that were happening at that time from the beginning of the book, there were prophets, in fact all the prophets were saying, “the Babylonians will never get in the city. The Babylonians are going to go back. All the stuff that was taken from us is going to be returned. The Babylonians, the Babylonians will never defeat us.” And they were obviously wrong and we’re not hearing much from their voices anymore. And Jeremiah’s telling king Zedekiah, “like, look, this is this is going to happen because this is God’s will and this is what he intends to do. There’s no turning it back. Even if you were to destroy the whole army of Babylon, and there were just like some wounded soldiers left in tents, they would stagger out of their tents and burn this city to the ground.” So…so as things continued to deteriorate, fear and panic and an overwhelming sense of gloom and doom were like disintegrating, undermining the power structures. And for lots of people the message that Jeremiah was prophesying of surrender made him look like a traitor. And, so, he buys this field in Benjamin and it just looks like he’s gonna defect. Everybody is paranoid and as Jeremiah’s trying to leave the city he gets arrested and he ends up in a dungeon and then king Zedekiah frees him and then he’s held under house arrest and then he’s later thrown into an empty well where he’s supposed to die, but he was rescued from the pit. And then after that, the king comes to him again, secretly. And, so, we can see how much things have fallen apart inside the city. The Kings meeting secretly asking Jeremiah to give him like the straight truth, what God is actually saying about the predicament. And it’s not like Jeremiah hasn’t said that. So, Jeremiah’s freshly out of a well where he was thrown in to die. Now he’s out of the well standing before the king. The kings asking him to give him the straight truth and you can see Jeremiah’s response, “if I told you the truth, you’d kill me and if I give you advice like every other time you won’t listen to me anyway”, which is pretty much reflective of the prophetic journey, the life of a prophet as we see it in the Scriptures. So, you can read the stories, they’re intriguing to be sure, they’re…they’re part of history and we can study the history or we can study the tragedy of exile and find it appalling, but we don’t necessarily remember that none of this had to happen. Like, Jeremiah had been warning about this for two decades, but no one listened. So, it wasn’t like they hadn’t been told. And indeed, the Babylonians did break through the wall and the wall fell, and when the wall fell you can imagine the rush of metal and the soldiers and leather and sword and spear rushing into the city and the chaos of people trying to flee and the chaos of people trying to hide and the chaos as the city is being taken and devastated. And we can shake our heads and go, “wow, what an awful…what an awful time that would’ve been. It could’ve been avoided”, but we disassociate as if it might not really have anything to do with us. But it starts becoming very, personally, when you think about what we read in Proverbs today, “a man without self-control is like a city broken into and left without walls.” So, that snaps some things into place all of the sudden, doesn’t it? The voice of wisdom is telling us that we have no defenses, we have no protection when we lose control of ourselves. So, if we needed a picture then we’ve got the picture from what we read in the book of Jeremiah, but we probably already know. Like, we’ve probably already experienced this in our lives. It just hasn’t been put in these terms before - chaos and fear and panic and loss and all of the enemies that come rushing through a defenseless person with deadly intent when there is no self-control. So, it obviously looks different than the taking of Jerusalem, but it’s not any less real. And, so, once again, the Scriptures are right here facing us honestly holding up a mirror and asking us to look into our own eyes because it’s showing us the outcomes of the paths that we choose as…as we’ve seen in today’s reading. And a lack of self-control is usually the choice between chaos and order. So, what path will you walk today?

Prayer:

Father, we invite You into that. We’ve seen and are seeing the destruction of Jerusalem and it’s certainly overwhelming and it’s certainly a sad part of the story, but when it becomes applied to our own lives as the Proverbs tells us that a person without self-control is…is like a city with the walls torn down, well then we realize the chaos that was happening inside that city when it was being taken is the kind of stuff that happens to us when we lose control of ourselves. And the reality is, we can't…I mean…we like to think that we’re in control way more than we actually are, and what we need to do is give up and let go and surrender to You and Your will and Your ways, because we will never find self-control in any other way. So, come Holy Spirit into all of this we pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Jeremiah 37-38

Jeremiah Warns Zedekiah

37 (A)Zedekiah the son of Josiah, (B)whom Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon made king in the land of Judah, reigned instead of (C)Coniah the son of Jehoiakim. (D)But neither he nor his servants nor the people of the land listened to the words of the Lord that he spoke through Jeremiah the prophet.

King Zedekiah sent (E)Jehucal the son of (F)Shelemiah, and (G)Zephaniah the priest, the son of (H)Maaseiah, to Jeremiah the prophet, saying, “Please (I)pray for us to the Lord our God.” (J)Now Jeremiah was still going in and out among the people, (K)for he had not yet been put in prison. (L)The army of Pharaoh had come out of Egypt. And when (M)the Chaldeans who were besieging Jerusalem heard news about them, (N)they withdrew from Jerusalem.

Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah the prophet: “Thus says the Lord, God of Israel: Thus shall you say to the king of Judah who (O)sent you to me to inquire of me, ‘Behold, (P)Pharaoh's army that came to help you is about to (Q)return to Egypt, to its own land. And (R)the Chaldeans shall come back and fight against this city. (S)They shall capture it and burn it with fire. Thus says the Lord, Do not deceive yourselves, saying, “The Chaldeans will surely go away from us,” for they will not go away. 10 (T)For even if you should defeat the whole army of Chaldeans who are fighting against you, and there remained of them only wounded men, every man in his tent, they would rise up and (U)burn this city with fire.’”

Jeremiah Imprisoned

11 Now when (V)the Chaldean army had withdrawn from Jerusalem at the approach of Pharaoh's army, 12 Jeremiah set out from Jerusalem to go to (W)the land of Benjamin (X)to receive his portion there (Y)among the people. 13 When he was at (Z)the Benjamin Gate, a sentry there named Irijah the son of (AA)Shelemiah, son of Hananiah, seized Jeremiah the prophet, saying, (AB)“You are deserting to the Chaldeans.” 14 And Jeremiah said, “It is a lie; I am not deserting to the Chaldeans.” But Irijah would not listen to him, and seized Jeremiah and brought him to (AC)the officials. 15 And the officials were enraged at Jeremiah, and they beat him (AD)and imprisoned him in the house of Jonathan the secretary, for it had been made a prison.

16 (AE)When Jeremiah had come to the dungeon cells and remained there many days, 17 King Zedekiah sent for him and received him. The king questioned him (AF)secretly in his house and said, “Is there any word from the Lord?” Jeremiah said, “There is.” Then he said, (AG)“You shall be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon.” 18 Jeremiah also said to King Zedekiah, “What wrong have I done to you or your servants or this people, (AH)that you have put me in prison? 19 (AI)Where are your prophets who prophesied to you, saying, ‘The king of Babylon will not come against you and against this land’? 20 Now hear, please, O my lord the king: (AJ)let my humble plea come before you and (AK)do not send me back to the house of Jonathan the secretary, lest I die there.” 21 So King Zedekiah gave orders, and they committed Jeremiah to (AL)the court of the guard. And a loaf of bread was given him daily from the bakers' street, (AM)until all the bread of the city was gone. So Jeremiah remained in (AN)the court of the guard.

Jeremiah Cast into the Cistern

38 Now Shephatiah the son of Mattan, Gedaliah the son of Pashhur, (AO)Jucal the son of Shelemiah, and (AP)Pashhur the son of Malchiah heard the words that Jeremiah was saying to all the people: “Thus says the Lord: (AQ)He who stays in this city shall die by the sword, by famine, and by pestilence, (AR)but he who goes out to the Chaldeans shall live. He shall have his life as a prize of war, and live. Thus says the Lord: (AS)This city shall surely be given into the hand of the army of the king of Babylon and be taken.” Then the officials said to the king, (AT)“Let this man be put to death, (AU)for he is weakening the hands of the soldiers who are left in this city, and the hands of all the people, by speaking such words to them. For this man is not seeking (AV)the welfare of this people, but their harm.” King Zedekiah said, “Behold, he is in your hands, (AW)for the king can do nothing against you.” So they took Jeremiah (AX)and cast him into the cistern of Malchiah, the king's son, which was in (AY)the court of the guard, letting Jeremiah down (AZ)by ropes. (BA)And there was no water in the cistern, but only mud, and (BB)Jeremiah sank in the mud.

Jeremiah Rescued from the Cistern

When (BC)Ebed-melech (BD)the Ethiopian, (BE)a eunuch who was in the king's house, heard that they had put Jeremiah into the cistern—the king was sitting (BF)in the Benjamin Gate— (BG)Ebed-melech went from the king's house and said to the king, “My lord the king, these men have done evil in all that they did to Jeremiah the prophet by casting him into the cistern, and he will die there of (BH)hunger, (BI)for there is no bread left in the city.” 10 Then the king commanded (BJ)Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, “Take thirty men with you from here, and lift Jeremiah the prophet out of the cistern before he dies.” 11 So (BK)Ebed-melech took the men with him and went to the house of the king, to a wardrobe in the storehouse, and took from there old rags and worn-out clothes, which he let down to Jeremiah in the cistern (BL)by ropes. 12 Then (BM)Ebed-melech the Ethiopian said to Jeremiah, “Put the rags and clothes between your armpits and (BN)the ropes.” Jeremiah did so. 13 Then they drew Jeremiah up with (BO)ropes and lifted him out of the cistern. And Jeremiah remained in the (BP)court of the guard.

Jeremiah Warns Zedekiah Again

14 King Zedekiah sent for Jeremiah the prophet and received him at the third entrance of the temple of the Lord. The king said to Jeremiah, “I will ask you a question; hide nothing from me.” 15 Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, “If I tell you, will you not surely put me to death? And if I give you counsel, you will not listen to me.” 16 Then King Zedekiah swore (BQ)secretly to Jeremiah, (BR)“As the Lord lives, (BS)who made our souls, I will not put you to death or deliver you into the hand of (BT)these men who seek your life.”

17 Then Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, “Thus says the Lord, the God of hosts, the God of Israel: (BU)If you will surrender to (BV)the officials of the king of Babylon, (BW)then your life shall be spared, and this city shall not be burned with fire, and you and your house shall live. 18 But if you do not surrender to (BX)the officials of the king of Babylon, (BY)then this city shall be given into the hand of the Chaldeans, (BZ)and they shall burn it with fire, and you shall not escape from their hand.” 19 King Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, “I am afraid of the Judeans (CA)who have deserted to the Chaldeans, lest I be handed over to them and they deal cruelly with me.” 20 Jeremiah said, “You shall not be given to them. Obey now the voice of the Lord in what I say to you, (CB)and it shall be well with you, and your life shall be spared. 21 But if you refuse to (CC)surrender, this is the vision which the Lord has shown to me: 22 Behold, all the women left in the house of the king of Judah were being led out to the officials of the king of Babylon and were saying,

(CD)“‘Your trusted friends have deceived you
and prevailed against you;
now that your feet are sunk in the mud,
they turn away from you.’

23 All your wives and (CE)your sons shall be led out to the Chaldeans, and you yourself shall not escape from their hand, but shall be seized by the king of Babylon, and this city shall be burned with fire.”

24 Then Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, “Let no one know of these words, and you shall not die. 25 If (CF)the officials hear that I have spoken with you and come to you and say to you, ‘Tell us what you said to the king and what the king said to you; hide nothing from us and we will not put you to death,’ 26 then you shall say to them, (CG)‘I made a humble plea to the king that he would not send me back to the house of Jonathan to die there.’” 27 Then all the officials came to Jeremiah and asked him, and he answered them as the king had instructed him. So they stopped speaking with him, for the conversation had not been overheard. 28 And Jeremiah remained (CH)in the court of the guard until the day that Jerusalem was taken.

1 Timothy 6

(A)Let all who are under a yoke as bondservants[a] regard their own masters as worthy of all honor, (B)so that the name of God and the teaching may not be reviled. Those who have believing masters must not be disrespectful on the ground that they are (C)brothers; rather they must serve all the better since those who benefit by their good service are believers and beloved.

False Teachers and True Contentment

(D)Teach and urge these things. If anyone (E)teaches a different doctrine and does not agree with (F)the sound[b] words of our Lord Jesus Christ and the teaching (G)that accords with godliness, (H)he is puffed up with conceit and (I)understands nothing. He has an unhealthy craving for (J)controversy and for (K)quarrels about words, which produce envy, dissension, slander, evil suspicions, and constant friction among people (L)who are depraved in mind and deprived of the truth, (M)imagining that godliness is a means of gain. But (N)godliness (O)with contentment is great gain, for (P)we brought nothing into the world, and[c] we cannot take anything out of the world. But (Q)if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content. But (R)those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, (S)into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that (T)plunge people into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money is a root of (U)all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.

Fight the Good Fight of Faith

11 But as for you, (V)O man of God, (W)flee these things. (X)Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness. 12 (Y)Fight the good fight of the faith. (Z)Take hold of the eternal life (AA)to which you were called and about which you made (AB)the good confession in the presence of many witnesses. 13 (AC)I charge you in the presence of God, who gives life to all things, and of Christ Jesus, (AD)who in his testimony before[d] Pontius Pilate made (AE)the good confession, 14 to keep the commandment unstained and free from reproach until (AF)the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ, 15 which he will display (AG)at the proper time—he who is (AH)the blessed and only Sovereign, (AI)the King of kings and Lord of lords, 16 (AJ)who alone has immortality, (AK)who dwells in (AL)unapproachable light, (AM)whom no one has ever seen or can see. To him be honor and eternal dominion. Amen.

17 As for the rich in (AN)this present age, charge them (AO)not to be haughty, nor (AP)to set their hopes on (AQ)the uncertainty of riches, but on God, (AR)who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. 18 They are to do good, (AS)to be rich in good works, to be generous and (AT)ready to share, 19 thus (AU)storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they may (AV)take hold of (AW)that which is truly life.

20 O Timothy, guard the deposit entrusted to you. (AX)Avoid the (AY)irreverent babble and contradictions of what is falsely called “knowledge,” 21 for by professing it some have swerved from the faith.

(AZ)Grace be with you.[e]

Psalm 89:38-52

38 But now you have (A)cast off and rejected;
you are full of wrath against your (B)anointed.
39 You have (C)renounced (D)the covenant with your servant;
you have (E)defiled his (F)crown in the dust.
40 You have (G)breached all his walls;
you have laid his strongholds in ruins.
41 (H)All who pass by plunder him;
he has become (I)the scorn of his neighbors.
42 You have exalted the right hand of his foes;
you have made all his enemies rejoice.
43 You have also turned back the edge of his sword,
and you have not made him stand in battle.
44 You have made his splendor to cease
and cast his throne to the ground.
45 You have cut short (J)the days of his youth;
you have (K)covered him with shame. Selah

46 (L)How long, O Lord? Will you hide yourself forever?
How long will your wrath (M)burn like fire?
47 (N)Remember (O)how short my (P)time is!
For what vanity you have created all the children of man!
48 (Q)What man can live and never (R)see death?
Who can deliver his soul from the power of (S)Sheol? Selah

49 Lord, where is your (T)steadfast love of old,
which by your (U)faithfulness you swore to David?
50 (V)Remember, O Lord, how your servants are mocked,
and how I bear in my (W)heart the insults[a] of all the many nations,
51 with which your enemies mock, O Lord,
with which they mock (X)the footsteps of your (Y)anointed.

52 (Z)Blessed be the Lord forever!
Amen and Amen.

Jeremiah 35:1-36:32, 1 Timothy 5:1-25, Psalms 89:14-37, Proverbs 25:25-27

Today is the 20th day of October. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian. It’s great to be here with you today as we do what we do every beginning of each new week. We walk into the threshold and see that it’s all sparkly and shiny and just waiting for us. Nothing has gone wrong. Nothing has gone right. The week is here for us to make the decisions and follow the leading of the Holy Spirit and how well we do that will determine how this week goes. And one of the ways we do this is this rhythm that we have. We continue to allow God’s word to speak to us each and every day. And, so, off we go into this brand-new week. We’ll read from the English Standard Version this week and continue our journey through the book of Jeremiah in the Old Testament. Today we’ll read chapters 35 and 36.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word. We thank You for bringing us here into this brand-new week as we continue our journey forward. We thank You for Your faithfulness. We thank You for Your steadfast love. We thank You for Your mercy and Your kindness and that You have adopted us into Your family and that we are Your children. It’s unspeakably good news but it’s also mind blowing when we slow down enough to understand who we are on this planet because of You and what that means to how this week should be lift. So, come Holy Spirit into that and lead us into all truth, lead us on the narrow path that leads to life. Illuminate our steps we pray in the name of Jesus as we trust in You. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hi guys this is Cherry from Oklahoma. Suicide keeps coming to the forefront it seems. I want to share a story. Back last February I found out we had a water leak here and I had a job, was only home two times a year. I traveled 48 weeks out of the year. So, trying to fix that from afar, I spoke to a man that works with the water company and during that phone call he shared that his wife had just told him, his wife of 26 years had just told him she wanted a divorce. And then rolling forward from that point about four months down the line from February, he was heavy on my heart one night and I felt like I needed to call him, but I wrestled with it for a quite a while but then I finally did. __ And when he answered he was very distant and cold and just, you know, a touch of rude and I didn’t understand but I still told him what God put on my heart and then a couple weeks ago, I’m back home now because I quit the job, and there’s another water leak. Thankfully it’s on their side. So, they come out. A guy comes to my door. He introduces himself. It’s him. And he apologized for being rude and then he takes his sunglasses off and he looks me deep in the eyes and he said, “I want to thank you for saving my life.” And then tears started streaming down his face and he explained how he was sitting there by the lake when my call came through, 26 Zanex in his hand getting ready to pop them in his mouth. And he said, “if you had not called me, I would be dead right now.” And he goes, “I am so thankful.” He said, “that was his darkest moment in my life, and I would be dead if and I didn’t…I don’t want to die.” And he’s like, “I realized after you hung up God wanted me to live.” So, hey guys there’s a joy in the morning. Don’t give up. Hold on. Hold on. Hold on.

Hi this is Victoria Soldier just calling tonight to pray with some of the DABbers. I wanted to pray for Shay for the UAU workers who are on strike today. I also want to pray for my brother Aaron from Oklahoma. I want to pray for Leslie from Washington. She’s dealing with some concerns. And I want to pray for Melissa and our children and their purity and their concerns with Christ. Gracious Father, I praise You today Lord. I magnify Your name. I glorify Your name. I first want to lift my heart out to Aaron. Aaron my heart goes out to You. Nothing is worse than…than the seeing and knowing things of this nature. And God is the one who revealed it and he reveals it for a reason. And I thank God that You have a heart like I did where You wanted to come back together. Lord, You touch him Lord. You touch that wife and that wife’s heart. Oh Lord and let her see what she is missing Lord because sometimes the enemy wants us to turn from what we have is good because we know what we have is good, just something that looks like it might be edible. Oh Lord You have Your way. You open up her eyes Lord. You deliver her soul Lord. In the name of Jesus, You deliver her soul and You touch Aaron Lord. You give them the desires of his heart. You give them what You would have for him Lord and let him know regardless of the incident that God always has something else for You. Oh Lord You have Your way. In the name of Jesus, I ask You to touch those going through this…this layoff Lord or this picketing. Lord I ask that You come in the midst Lord and You have Your way. You give them exceedingly above or more of what You can ask or think. Oh Lord we ask that You touch our children Lord…

This is Candace from Oregon. I would like everyone who’s listening please pray with me in Jesus’ name on behalf of Tom who called in on October 8. Lord we thank You for our dear brother Tom and we join with him in a desperate plea Lord to ask You to intervene and let his wife return to full health, his 66-year-old wife. Lord, we know that You can do anything. So, cover him and his dear wife totally in Your peace, drenched and in Your love and please heal and restore her Lord. We ask this along with Tom in Jesus’ name. Encourage him, encourage them both. Lord, I pray that You would encourage my son Micah. I pray that he would no longer have any panic attacks. I pray that he would be able to do his job search with renewed confidence and that You will, in Your grace and mercy, go with him every step of the way in Jesus’ name I ask it. Thank you, my Daily Audio Bible friends. I love you all so much. Candace from Oregon.

Good morning this is Heidi Daniels calling from California Central Coast. I am asking for prayer for my family. We have four grandkids that are little, two seven-year-olds a six-year-old and a three-year-old that have moved in with us and the last two that we just added has causes, you know, some adjustment period and we just discovered that one of them has sexually and appropriately touched the three-year-old. Oh my God… And we need to know what type of response for his sake. Oh my God, oh my God Jesus…Jesus Jesus…Jesus Jesus Jesus…Jesus Jesus Jesus…

Jeremiah 35-36

The Obedience of the Rechabites

35 The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord in the days of (A)Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah: “Go to the house of the (B)Rechabites and speak with them and bring them to the house of the Lord, into one of (C)the chambers; then offer them wine to drink.” So I took Jaazaniah the son of Jeremiah, son of Habazziniah and his brothers and all his sons and the whole house of the Rechabites. I brought them to the house of the Lord into (D)the chamber of the sons of Hanan the son of Igdaliah, (E)the man of God, which was near (F)the chamber of the officials, above (G)the chamber of (H)Maaseiah the son of Shallum, (I)keeper of the threshold. Then I set before the Rechabites pitchers full of wine, and cups, and I said to them, “Drink wine.” But they answered, “We will drink no wine, for (J)Jonadab the son of Rechab, our father, commanded us, ‘You shall not drink wine, neither you nor your sons forever. You shall not build a house; you shall not sow seed; you shall not plant or have a vineyard; but you shall live in tents all your days, (K)that you may live many days in the land where you sojourn.’ We have obeyed the voice of Jonadab the son of Rechab, our father, in all that he commanded us, to drink no wine all our days, ourselves, our wives, our sons, or our daughters, and not to build houses to dwell in. We have no vineyard or field or seed, 10 but we have lived in tents and have obeyed and done all that Jonadab our father commanded us. 11 But (L)when Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up against the land, we said, ‘Come, and let us go to Jerusalem for fear of (M)the army of the Chaldeans and (N)the army of the Syrians.’ (O)So we are living in Jerusalem.”

12 Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah: 13 “Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Go and say to the people of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, (P)Will you not receive instruction and listen to my words? declares the Lord. 14 The command that Jonadab the son of Rechab gave to his sons, to drink no wine, has been kept, and they drink none to this day, for they have obeyed their father's command. I have spoken to you (Q)persistently, but you have not listened to me. 15 I have sent to you all my servants the prophets, sending them (R)persistently, saying, (S)‘Turn now every one of you from his evil way, and amend your deeds, and (T)do not go after other gods to serve them, and then you shall dwell in the land that I gave to you and your fathers.’ (U)But you did not incline your ear or listen to me. 16 The sons of Jonadab the son of Rechab have kept the command that their father gave them, but this people has not obeyed me. 17 Therefore, thus says the Lord, the God of hosts, the God of Israel: Behold, I am bringing upon Judah and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem all the disaster that I have pronounced against them, (V)because I have spoken to them and they have not listened, (W)I have called to them and they have not answered.”

18 But to the house of the Rechabites Jeremiah said, “Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Because you have obeyed the command of Jonadab your father and kept all his precepts and done all that he commanded you, 19 therefore thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Jonadab the son of Rechab shall never lack a man (X)to stand before me.”

Jehoiakim Burns Jeremiah's Scroll

36 In the (Y)fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, this word came to Jeremiah from the Lord: “Take (Z)a scroll and (AA)write on it all the words that I have spoken to you against Israel and (AB)Judah (AC)and all the nations, (AD)from the day I spoke to you, from the days of Josiah until today. (AE)It may be that the house of Judah will hear all the disaster that I intend to do to them, (AF)so that every one may turn from his evil way, and (AG)that I may forgive their iniquity and their sin.”

Then Jeremiah called (AH)Baruch the son of Neriah, and (AI)Baruch wrote on (AJ)a scroll at the dictation of Jeremiah all the words of the Lord that he had spoken to him. And Jeremiah ordered (AK)Baruch, saying, (AL)“I am banned from going to the house of the Lord, so you are to go, and (AM)on a day of fasting in the hearing of all the people in the Lord's house you shall read the words of the Lord from the scroll that you have written at my dictation. You shall read them also in the hearing of all the men of Judah who come out of their cities. (AN)It may be that their plea for mercy will come before the Lord, (AO)and that every one will turn from his evil way, for great is the anger and wrath that the Lord has pronounced against this people.” And Baruch the son of Neriah did all that Jeremiah the prophet ordered him about reading from the scroll the words of the Lord in the Lord's house.

(AP)In the fifth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, (AQ)in the ninth month, all the people in Jerusalem and all the people who came from the cities of Judah to Jerusalem (AR)proclaimed a fast before the Lord. 10 Then, in the hearing of all the people, Baruch read the words of Jeremiah from the scroll, in the house of the Lord, in (AS)the chamber of Gemariah the son of Shaphan the secretary, which was in the upper court, at the entry of the New Gate of the Lord's house.

11 When Micaiah the son of Gemariah, son of (AT)Shaphan, heard all the words of the Lord from the scroll, 12 he went down to the king's house, into the secretary's chamber, and (AU)all the officials were sitting there: (AV)Elishama the secretary, (AW)Delaiah the son of Shemaiah, (AX)Elnathan (AY)the son of Achbor, (AZ)Gemariah the son of (BA)Shaphan, Zedekiah the son of Hananiah, and all the officials. 13 And Micaiah told them all the words that he had heard, when Baruch read the scroll in the hearing of the people. 14 Then all the officials sent Jehudi the son of Nethaniah, son of (BB)Shelemiah, son of Cushi, to say to Baruch, “Take in your hand the scroll that you read in the hearing of the people, and come.” So Baruch the son of Neriah took the scroll in his hand and came to them. 15 And they said to him, “Sit down and read it.” So Baruch read it to them. 16 When they heard all the words, they turned one to another in fear. And they said to Baruch, (BC)“We must report all these words to the king.” 17 Then they asked Baruch, “Tell us, please, how did you write all these words? Was it at his dictation?” 18 Baruch answered them, “He dictated all these words to me, (BD)while I wrote them with ink on the scroll.” 19 Then the officials said to Baruch, “Go and hide, you and Jeremiah, and let no one know where you are.”

20 So they went into the court to the king, having put the scroll in (BE)the chamber of Elishama the secretary, and they reported all the words to the king. 21 Then the king sent Jehudi to get the scroll, and he took it from the chamber of Elishama the secretary. And Jehudi read it to the king and all the officials who stood beside the king. 22 It was (BF)the ninth month, and the king was sitting in (BG)the winter house, and there was a fire burning in the fire pot before him. 23 As Jehudi read three or four columns, the king would cut them off with a knife and throw them into the fire in the fire pot, until the entire scroll was consumed in the fire that was in the fire pot. 24 Yet (BH)neither the king nor any of his servants who heard all these words was afraid, (BI)nor did they tear their garments. 25 Even when (BJ)Elnathan and Delaiah and Gemariah (BK)urged the king not to burn the scroll, he would not listen to them. 26 And the king commanded Jerahmeel the (BL)king's son and Seraiah the son of Azriel and (BM)Shelemiah the son of Abdeel to seize (BN)Baruch the secretary and Jeremiah the prophet, but the Lord hid them.

27 Now after the king had burned the scroll with the words that Baruch wrote at Jeremiah's dictation, the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah: 28 “Take another scroll and write on it all the former words that were in the first scroll, which Jehoiakim the king of Judah has burned. 29 And concerning Jehoiakim king of Judah you shall say, ‘Thus says the Lord, You have burned this scroll, saying, (BO)“Why have you written in it that the king of Babylon will certainly come and destroy this land, and will cut off from it man and beast?” 30 Therefore thus says the Lord concerning Jehoiakim king of Judah: (BP)He shall have none (BQ)to sit on the throne of David, (BR)and his dead body shall be cast out to the heat by day and the frost by night. 31 (BS)And I will punish him and his offspring and his servants for their iniquity. I will bring upon them and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem and upon the people of Judah all the disaster that I have pronounced against them, but they would not hear.’”

32 Then Jeremiah took another scroll and gave it to (BT)Baruch the scribe, the son of Neriah, who (BU)wrote on it at the dictation of Jeremiah all the words of the scroll that Jehoiakim king of Judah had burned in the fire. And many similar words were added to them.

1 Timothy 5

Instructions for the Church

(A)Do not rebuke an older man but encourage him as you would a father, (B)younger men as brothers, older women as mothers, younger women as sisters, in all purity.

Honor widows (C)who are truly widows. But if a widow has children or grandchildren, let them first learn (D)to show godliness to their own household and to make some return to their parents, for (E)this is pleasing in the sight of God. She (F)who is truly a widow, left all alone, has set her hope on God and (G)continues in supplications and prayers night and day, but (H)she who is self-indulgent is (I)dead even while she lives. (J)Command these things as well, so that they may be without reproach. But if anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for (K)members of his household, he has (L)denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.

Let a widow be enrolled if she is not less than sixty years of age, having been (M)the wife of one husband,[a] 10 and having a reputation for good works: if she has brought up children, has (N)shown hospitality, (O)has washed the feet of the saints, has (P)cared for the afflicted, and has (Q)devoted herself to every good work. 11 But refuse to enroll younger widows, for when (R)their passions draw them away from Christ, they desire to marry 12 and so incur condemnation for having abandoned their former faith. 13 Besides that, they learn to be idlers, going about from house to house, and not only idlers, but also (S)gossips and (T)busybodies, saying what they should not. 14 So I would have (U)younger widows marry, bear children, (V)manage their households, and (W)give the adversary no occasion for slander. 15 (X)For some have already strayed after Satan. 16 If any believing woman has relatives who are widows, let her care for them. Let the church not be burdened, so that it may care for those (Y)who are truly widows.

17 Let the elders (Z)who rule well be considered worthy of (AA)double honor, especially those who labor in preaching and teaching. 18 For the Scripture says, (AB)“You shall not muzzle an ox when it treads out the grain,” and, (AC)“The laborer deserves his wages.” 19 Do not admit a charge against an elder except (AD)on the evidence of two or three witnesses. 20 As for those who persist in sin, (AE)rebuke them in the presence of all, (AF)so that the rest may stand in fear. 21 In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus and of the elect angels (AG)I charge you to keep these rules without prejudging, (AH)doing nothing from partiality. 22 (AI)Do not be hasty in the (AJ)laying on of hands, nor (AK)take part in the sins of others; keep yourself pure. 23 (No longer drink only water, but (AL)use a little wine (AM)for the sake of your stomach and your frequent ailments.) 24 The sins of some people are conspicuous, going before them to judgment, but the sins of others appear later. 25 So also good works are conspicuous, and (AN)even those that are not cannot remain hidden.

Psalm 89:14-37

14 (A)Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne;
(B)steadfast love and faithfulness go before you.
15 Blessed are the people who know (C)the festal shout,
who walk, O Lord, in (D)the light of your face,
16 who exult in your (E)name all the day
and in your righteousness are (F)exalted.
17 For you are (G)the glory of their strength;
by your favor our (H)horn is exalted.
18 For our (I)shield belongs to the Lord,
our king to (J)the Holy One of Israel.

19 (K)Of old you spoke in a vision to your godly one,[a] and said:
“I have (L)granted help to one who is (M)mighty;
I have exalted one (N)chosen from the people.
20 (O)I have found David, my servant;
with my holy oil I have (P)anointed him,
21 so that my (Q)hand shall be established with him;
my arm also shall strengthen him.
22 The enemy shall not outwit him;
(R)the wicked shall not humble him.
23 I will (S)crush his foes before him
and strike down those who hate him.
24 My (T)faithfulness and my (U)steadfast love shall be with him,
and in my name shall his (V)horn be exalted.
25 I will set his hand on (W)the sea
and his right hand on (X)the rivers.
26 He shall cry to me, ‘You are my (Y)Father,
my God, and (Z)the Rock of my salvation.’
27 And I will make him the (AA)firstborn,
(AB)the highest of the kings of the earth.
28 My steadfast love I will keep for him forever,
and my (AC)covenant will stand firm[b] for him.
29 I will establish his (AD)offspring forever
and his (AE)throne as (AF)the days of the heavens.
30 (AG)If his children forsake my law
and do not walk according to my rules,[c]
31 if they violate my statutes
and do not keep my commandments,
32 then I will punish their transgression with (AH)the rod
and their iniquity with stripes,
33 but I will not remove from him my steadfast love
or be false to my faithfulness.
34 I will not violate my (AI)covenant
or alter the word that went forth from my lips.
35 Once for all I have sworn (AJ)by my holiness;
I will not (AK)lie to David.
36 His (AL)offspring shall endure forever,
(AM)his (AN)throne as long as (AO)the sun before me.
37 Like (AP)the moon it shall be established forever,
(AQ)a faithful witness in the skies.” Selah

Jeremiah 33:1-34:22, 1 Timothy 4:1-16, Psalms 89:1-13, Proverbs 25:23-24

Today is the 19th of October. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian and it’s a joy to be here with you today and every day as we come around this global campfire and allow God’s word to speak to us and inform our lives and where we’re headed and the trajectory of the rest of this year and all of that. All those things happen one day at a time, one step at a time. And, so, we’ll take the next step forward, which will lead us back out into the book of Jeremiah. We’re reading from the New Living Translation this week, which is today. We’ll start with something else tomorrow, but today Jeremiah chapter 33 and 34.

Prayer:

Thank You, Father for another week in Your word. Thank You, Father for all that You’ve spoken to us in this week. And it just continues to accumulate as we continue our journey through this year. All of the different things You’ve spoken through Your word and all of the things that You’ve touched inside of us through Your words and all of the things that have begun to be transformed through Your word, we’re seeing this, we’re seeing this evidenced in our own lives. And, so, we’re thankful. Thank You for bringing us through another week as we continue this journey. And as the Psalm says, You are eternally faithful. And that we juxtapose that against our own lives, and we know that we aren’t, and we can’t be other than through the power of Your Holy Spirit. And, so, come Holy Spirit, show us the ways of faithfulness because You are eternally faithful. We pray these things in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

This is Running Desperately to Jesus. Brian, your commentary on the reading for October 7th on Colossians was amazing. I find myself mixing the bowls of good behavior and bad behavior and I struggle with that on a daily basis as my flesh. Sometimes I do things and say things that after I say it or do it I’m quickly convicted, which I’m gonna take that as a positive. I do know that one of the things that will stick in my mind is when you gave the…Paul gave the statement or you gave the statement, “can I say and fill in the blank in the name of Jesus?” I do want to sit with Him. I do want to be with Him. It is a daily challenge for me sometimes because my behavior does…does create that situation for me sometimes or I’m not so good at it too. So, right now I’m just asking that everyone pray for me that I continue to grow strong in God. This is a walk that I refuse to turn back from but want to get it right. Thank you everybody.

Hello Daily Audio Bible family this is Cindy. I’ve played the flute a few times when I’ve called in. Just want to be real with you. And I just am at…I just feel like I just don’t have much faith left and is mostly because I…I’ve done everything I know to do to keep standing with some things I just don’t ever see shifting and it…it’s doing a number on my faith and I just want to give up, give up in the sense of just stop trying, stop praying, stop…I’ve stayed the course…I’ve been a believer for over 40 years and ended up marrying a narcissist and just a real passive-aggressive divorce and in a strange relationship with my daughter that never shifts, live in a community of mostly nonbelievers. Where’s the shift? We’re to be agents of change empowered by God’s Spirit. I just feel tremendous grief over things staying the same and I’m just not a status quo girl. And I just don’t even want to get out of bed and it’s like over 35 minutes that I have to be at work and I’ve just never been at this place before in my life and now my father is blaming me for something that I just…just…just is a bad situation. And I’m so sorry to call and be like this. I want to be encouraging. Bye everyone.

Hello this is Tini from Australia __ Australia. Just want to say how blessed we are to have Daily Audio Bible. And we listen every morning before we get out of bed, that’s my husband Phil and myself and wanted to let the lady know who was praying…who rang in today regarding her inconsequential situations and mostly overwhelmed by the workplace that we are praying for you and just wanted you to know that you’re only…you only need to work for an audience of One. There’s only…that’s all…that you keep your integrity by keeping your eyes on knowing that the Lord God, your God, your father is watching you and loving you and supporting you and encouraging you in your times in the workplace. And we’re praying for you. I tell people about Daily Audio Bible all the time and I’m sure the audience is growing for this platform and where very grateful. Bless you all. Bye.

Hello this is Jessica from Maryland. I had called a few weeks ago but I didn’t hear my prayer request played and I just wanted to request that you pray for my husband and I. We’ve been trapped in the travel ban for over a year and a half now. And he lives in Spain but is from Iran and it’s just placed tremendous stress on our marriage with trying to run a marriage from across an ocean and just the constant uncertainty of when exactly we’ll be able to be together. And now I am nine weeks pregnant and, of course, not only are we missing not being able to spend this time together and celebrate this new and exciting chapter in our lives but we’re also just terrified not knowing when or if he’ll be able to be here for the birth of a child and the preparation and getting everything ready. So, I just ask that you pray for us, that you pray that God’s perfect timing would hopefully bring my husband to me sooner rather than later and just that we’ll be able to prepare for the birth of our baby. Thanks so much. Bye.

Jeremiah 31:27-32:44, 1 Timothy 3:1-16, Psalms 88:1-18, Proverbs 25:20-22

Today is October 18th. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian. It’s great to be here with you as we continue our journey through this week and month and year, of course. And, so, here we are around the global campfire and I hope morning or your afternoon or your evening is going well. And we have this time that no matter where we are in the world that we can come together out of the dark and be warmed by the campfire as we listen to God’s word speak to us. And that’s gonna…that’s gonna put us back into the book of Jeremiah. We have been reading from the New Living Translation this week, which is what we’ll do today. Jeremiah chapter 31 verse 27 through 32 verse 44.

Commentary:

Okay. So, as we mentioned when we started first Timothy, this is one of Paul’s personal letters that are found in the Scriptures, and it’s also known as a pastoral letter because…well…it was written from the apostle Paul to his son in the faith who had been raised up in the church and had become a pastor. And, so, in today’s reading Paul sort of gave this template for church leadership and the template is also found in a similar fashion in the pastoral letter to Titus, and it’s…these templates have been used ever since. Many of the Christian denominations have their…have their own process of discernment for ordination, like their own way of doing things, but the guidelines that we read today in first Timothy are almost always a part of that process because the guidelines that Paul wrote down, some of these characteristics, some of these morals and temperaments, there in there because they’re necessary, like they’re…they’re necessary to successfully shepherd and care for God’s people. So, Paul mentions two different offices of leadership today and in our reading and the first one being pastor or priest or presbyter and the second, the diaconate or the office of the deacons. And pretty much in all cases, there’s at least an appointment, like you’re being appointed to this particular function. And in a lot of cases a person is actually ordained and commissioned to perform this office in the church. Its ordained ministry. So, the office of the pastor, which is also called a priest or presbyter or bishop or an overseer or for that matter even a president in ancient writings, is certainly one of the most worthy callings in the church, one of the most difficult callings maybe be in the world, but it's…it’s also a very unique, very complicated, complex, difficult job at times. So, a certain criteria, certain baseline temperamental and moral criteria was written down by the apostle Paul because it’s required to do this job honorably. A pastor has to watch over and care for the spiritual needs of a community but before God, answering to God. So, according to first Timothy 3, this is what a pastor is supposed to…this…this is what is essential for a pastor. “A church leader must be a man whose life is above reproach. He must be faithful to his wife. He must exercise self-control, live wisely, and have a good reputation. He must enjoy having guests in his home. He must be able to teach. He must not be a heavy drinker or be violent. He must be gentle and not quarrelsome and not love money. He must manage his own family well, having children who respect and obey him. And he must not be a new believer because he might become proud and the devil would cause him to fall. And people outside the church must speak well of him so that he will not be disgraced and fall into the devil’s trap.” Now there was another office, the office of deacon that was also talked about today. And the deacons…we saw their formation in the book of Acts, right, when the apostles were preaching, and everybody was kind of having a common…a common life together. And, so, food was being distributed, right? And, so, certain Gentiles and certain Hebrews they were like complaining that, “my crowd didn’t get as much is their crowd, my table didn’t get as much is their table.” So, deacons were formed to help in the service of God’s people. And that’s the purpose, to care for the…basically the earthbound well-being of a congregation and the different functions that community life brings. Deacons were commissioned to assist the pastor in fulfilling this calling locally. So, deacons, according to Paul, must be well respected and have integrity and they must not be heavy drinkers or dishonest with money and they must be committed to the mystery of the faith now revealed and must live with a clear conscience. And they’re supposed to be…before they’re appointed, they’re supposed to be closely examined and if they’re affirmed then they can serve and be appointed or ordained as deacons. And their wives have to be respected and must not slander others, and they must exercise self-control and be faithful in everything they do, we faithful to their wives, manage their children and household well. And those who serve in this capacity will be rewarded with respect from others and will have increased confidence in their faith in Christ Jesus. So, a lot of words and a lot of criteria there in our reading today, but if you like…if you have ever wondered or sensed or felt pulled toward some type of calling and that’s leading or has led or may lead you toward ordained ministry then…well then the discernment process starts way before you ever say that out loud, way before you ever bring it forward or become what’s called an aspirant, somebody who aspires to ordained ministry. So, if…if you’re feeling pulled in that direction you should look at this criteria and look in the mirror and examine your own life because I can pretty much guarantee you that it will be examined in-depth as you go through the process. And maybe if you’ve been at a certain church or you’ve been in different churches over the years and you’ve seen people be trained and raised up into ministry…well…first Timothy three’s gonna very likely be one of the reasons that it’s done the way that it’s done. And the thing is, looking at this list, looking at what’s required, and for that matter, knowing what the job requires, these criteria, this is what you would…this is what you should expect from your spiritual leader or leaders, but also seeing what’s required here should give us a sense of honor, of course, but also a real desire to pray for our pastors and deacons. They have to live what they teach, and they have to model what that looks like in front of everybody. But the thing is, like when they were ordained or when they went through this…like…there’s nothing that makes them superhuman, like there’s nothing that changes their humanity into something else like they get something special so that they can carry out these criteria other than the anointing of the Holy Spirit. It’s no easier for them to live out their Christian faith than it is for you except for they have too…except for they have to you while they’re trying to do this, right? So, they can’t just take this criteria and try to live into it in a vacuum all by themselves. They have to do it while serving God’s people, and God’s people can be messy at times. And ordinations doesn’t lift somebody up above somebody else. And…man…I say this every year because it was so deeply pounded into me through the process that I went through myself. It's…you’re not being elevated; you’re actually signing up to become the slave of God’s people. It’s actually a step down. It’s actually a humble posture. It’s what Jesus modeled. So, it’s not like, “ooh…I get to be several steps above everybody looking down upon them because I’m standing on the platform.” It’s actually a person maybe maybe being on that platform saying I got nothing that you don’t have and I’m standing here the best I can to be an example and I can’t do it alone. And I realize that’s not always how things work. I get it, right? I mean…I have met hundreds and hundreds, maybe even…well…maybe not thousands, but many, many, many pastors along the way and I know that our culture really looks for certain things and that can definitely bring pride and arrogance. And some of the things that happen in church can really make a pastor cynical over the years. So, I get it. But what we need to do is pray for our pastors, not devour our pastors, right? Pray for those whom God has put in our lives to actually shield and protect and shepherd us. We should be praying, interceding for those people, holding their arms up, like being behind them because it’s a pretty hard, hard job. It’s a pretty difficult calling and we see people shepherding other people in the Scriptures, we see that those leaders always struggle, it’s a difficult thing to do.

Prayer:

Father, that’s where were at right now. We pray for our pastors. We pray for our priests or presbyters or whatever they’re called in the tradition and the denomination or in the church that we’re a part of. We acknowledge that they’ve been given a worthy job, a very, very important job in Your kingdom, but we don’t always realize that it’s a very, very difficult job. Often, we’re thinking, “must be nice to just be able to study the Bible all day and get paid”, when they don’t realize just how always on and never off the calling is. And, so, we pray for those in ordained ministry. Today we pray that the presence of Your Holy Spirit would be felt throughout the earth among them with a sense of encouragement and purpose and calling. Come Holy Spirit into this we pray. In the mighty name of Jesus, we ask. Amen.

dailyaudiobible.com is the website its home base, it’s how you stay connected, find out what’s going on around here. So, be sure to do that. Stay connected in any way that you can.

Stay connected at the Prayer Wall. Pray for your brothers and sisters. This has really always been a community of prayer, a community where we shoulder one another’s burdens and…and just be there for each other so that we know that we’re not alone on this journey. And it makes all the difference. So, stay connected to the Prayer Wall.

Check out the Daily Audio Bible Shop. There are resources there for the journey that we’re taking, including the God of Your story, which is fresh, freshly brand-new out, a work that was two years in the making, but is finally seeing the light of day. And it’s this…it’s just a beautifully hardbound edition that is a daily - January 1st through December 31st - working devotional through the Scriptures like we do here on the Daily Audio Bible and it's…it’s the only resource of its kind actually, believe it or not, it’s the only one like it in the world. There are a lot of one-year devotionals in the world that are fantastic but this is the only one that actually comments on each day’s reading from the one year Bible, which is what we do every day. So, it’s a wonderful…I mean…I wrote it so I was gonna say, “it’s a wonderful resource, you should have it” and I believe that and I worked with all of my heart on it but I’m not telling you that because I need you to buy my books like I’m getting nothing from this. I have devoted everything…everything and donated everything that…that would come my way through the Daily Audio Bible Shop to the Daily Audio Bible because this resource is of us and it’s for us. And, so, it should go to support the Global Campfire community that we are. And that’s just my conviction about it. So, if you haven’t got a copy of the God of your story, I am just praying and hoping that everyone in this community will have a hard copy, a physical representation of the journey that we take each and every year through the Scriptures here. So, you can find that at the Daily Audio Bible Shop or you just go to godofyourstory.com and it’ll take you there.

Jeremiah 33-34

Promises of Peace and Prosperity

33 While Jeremiah was still confined in the courtyard of the guard, the Lord gave him this second message: “This is what the Lord says—the Lord who made the earth, who formed and established it, whose name is the Lord: Ask me and I will tell you remarkable secrets you do not know about things to come. For this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: You have torn down the houses of this city and even the king’s palace to get materials to strengthen the walls against the siege ramps and swords of the enemy. You expect to fight the Babylonians,[a] but the men of this city are already as good as dead, for I have determined to destroy them in my terrible anger. I have abandoned them because of all their wickedness.

“Nevertheless, the time will come when I will heal Jerusalem’s wounds and give it prosperity and true peace. I will restore the fortunes of Judah and Israel and rebuild their towns. I will cleanse them of their sins against me and forgive all their sins of rebellion. Then this city will bring me joy, glory, and honor before all the nations of the earth! The people of the world will see all the good I do for my people, and they will tremble with awe at the peace and prosperity I provide for them.

10 “This is what the Lord says: You have said, ‘This is a desolate land where people and animals have all disappeared.’ Yet in the empty streets of Jerusalem and Judah’s other towns, there will be heard once more 11 the sounds of joy and laughter. The joyful voices of bridegrooms and brides will be heard again, along with the joyous songs of people bringing thanksgiving offerings to the Lord. They will sing,

‘Give thanks to the Lord of Heaven’s Armies,
for the Lord is good.
His faithful love endures forever!’

For I will restore the prosperity of this land to what it was in the past, says the Lord.

12 “This is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies says: This land—though it is now desolate and has no people and animals—will once more have pastures where shepherds can lead their flocks. 13 Once again shepherds will count their flocks in the towns of the hill country, the foothills of Judah,[b] the Negev, the land of Benjamin, the vicinity of Jerusalem, and all the towns of Judah. I, the Lord, have spoken!

14 “The day will come, says the Lord, when I will do for Israel and Judah all the good things I have promised them.

15 “In those days and at that time
I will raise up a righteous descendant[c] from King David’s line.
He will do what is just and right throughout the land.
16 In that day Judah will be saved,
and Jerusalem will live in safety.
And this will be its name:
‘The Lord Is Our Righteousness.’[d]

17 For this is what the Lord says: David will have a descendant sitting on the throne of Israel forever. 18 And there will always be Levitical priests to offer burnt offerings and grain offerings and sacrifices to me.”

19 Then this message came to Jeremiah from the Lord: 20 “This is what the Lord says: If you can break my covenant with the day and the night so that one does not follow the other, 21 only then will my covenant with my servant David be broken. Only then will he no longer have a descendant to reign on his throne. The same is true for my covenant with the Levitical priests who minister before me. 22 And as the stars of the sky cannot be counted and the sand on the seashore cannot be measured, so I will multiply the descendants of my servant David and the Levites who minister before me.”

23 The Lord gave another message to Jeremiah. He said, 24 “Have you noticed what people are saying?—‘The Lord chose Judah and Israel and then abandoned them!’ They are sneering and saying that Israel is not worthy to be counted as a nation. 25 But this is what the Lord says: I would no more reject my people than I would change my laws that govern night and day, earth and sky. 26 I will never abandon the descendants of Jacob or David, my servant, or change the plan that David’s descendants will rule the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Instead, I will restore them to their land and have mercy on them.”

A Warning for Zedekiah

34 King Nebuchadnezzar[e] of Babylon came with all the armies from the kingdoms he ruled, and he fought against Jerusalem and the towns of Judah. At that time this message came to Jeremiah from the Lord: “Go to King Zedekiah of Judah, and tell him, ‘This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: I am about to hand this city over to the king of Babylon, and he will burn it down. You will not escape his grasp but will be captured and taken to meet the king of Babylon face to face. Then you will be exiled to Babylon.

“‘But listen to this promise from the Lord, O Zedekiah, king of Judah. This is what the Lord says: You will not be killed in war but will die peacefully. People will burn incense in your memory, just as they did for your ancestors, the kings who preceded you. They will mourn for you, crying, “Alas, our master is dead!” This I have decreed, says the Lord.’”

So Jeremiah the prophet delivered the message to King Zedekiah of Judah. At this time the Babylonian army was besieging Jerusalem, Lachish, and Azekah—the only fortified cities of Judah not yet captured.

Freedom for Hebrew Slaves

This message came to Jeremiah from the Lord after King Zedekiah made a covenant with the people, proclaiming freedom for the slaves. He had ordered all the people to free their Hebrew slaves—both men and women. No one was to keep a fellow Judean in bondage. 10 The officials and all the people had obeyed the king’s command, 11 but later they changed their minds. They took back the men and women they had freed, forcing them to be slaves again.

12 So the Lord gave them this message through Jeremiah: 13 “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: I made a covenant with your ancestors long ago when I rescued them from their slavery in Egypt. 14 I told them that every Hebrew slave must be freed after serving six years. But your ancestors paid no attention to me. 15 Recently you repented and did what was right, following my command. You freed your slaves and made a solemn covenant with me in the Temple that bears my name. 16 But now you have shrugged off your oath and defiled my name by taking back the men and women you had freed, forcing them to be slaves once again.

17 “Therefore, this is what the Lord says: Since you have not obeyed me by setting your countrymen free, I will set you free to be destroyed by war, disease, and famine. You will be an object of horror to all the nations of the earth. 18 Because you have broken the terms of our covenant, I will cut you apart just as you cut apart the calf when you walked between its halves to solemnize your vows. 19 Yes, I will cut you apart, whether you are officials of Judah or Jerusalem, court officials, priests, or common people—for you have broken your oath. 20 I will give you to your enemies, and they will kill you. Your bodies will be food for the vultures and wild animals.

21 “I will hand over King Zedekiah of Judah and his officials to the army of the king of Babylon. And although they have left Jerusalem for a while, 22 I will call the Babylonian armies back again. They will fight against this city and will capture it and burn it down. I will see to it that all the towns of Judah are destroyed, with no one living there.”

1 Timothy 4

Warnings against False Teachers

Now the Holy Spirit tells us clearly that in the last times some will turn away from the true faith; they will follow deceptive spirits and teachings that come from demons. These people are hypocrites and liars, and their consciences are dead.[a]

They will say it is wrong to be married and wrong to eat certain foods. But God created those foods to be eaten with thanks by faithful people who know the truth. Since everything God created is good, we should not reject any of it but receive it with thanks. For we know it is made acceptable[b] by the word of God and prayer.

A Good Servant of Christ Jesus

If you explain these things to the brothers and sisters,[c] Timothy, you will be a worthy servant of Christ Jesus, one who is nourished by the message of faith and the good teaching you have followed. Do not waste time arguing over godless ideas and old wives’ tales. Instead, train yourself to be godly. “Physical training is good, but training for godliness is much better, promising benefits in this life and in the life to come.” This is a trustworthy saying, and everyone should accept it. 10 This is why we work hard and continue to struggle,[d] for our hope is in the living God, who is the Savior of all people and particularly of all believers.

11 Teach these things and insist that everyone learn them. 12 Don’t let anyone think less of you because you are young. Be an example to all believers in what you say, in the way you live, in your love, your faith, and your purity. 13 Until I get there, focus on reading the Scriptures to the church, encouraging the believers, and teaching them.

14 Do not neglect the spiritual gift you received through the prophecy spoken over you when the elders of the church laid their hands on you. 15 Give your complete attention to these matters. Throw yourself into your tasks so that everyone will see your progress. 16 Keep a close watch on how you live and on your teaching. Stay true to what is right for the sake of your own salvation and the salvation of those who hear you.

Psalm 89:1-13

Psalm 89

A psalm[a] of Ethan the Ezrahite.

I will sing of the Lord’s unfailing love forever!
Young and old will hear of your faithfulness.
Your unfailing love will last forever.
Your faithfulness is as enduring as the heavens.

The Lord said, “I have made a covenant with David, my chosen servant.
I have sworn this oath to him:
‘I will establish your descendants as kings forever;
they will sit on your throne from now until eternity.’” Interlude
All heaven will praise your great wonders, Lord;
myriads of angels will praise you for your faithfulness.
For who in all of heaven can compare with the Lord?
What mightiest angel is anything like the Lord?
The highest angelic powers stand in awe of God.
He is far more awesome than all who surround his throne.
O Lord God of Heaven’s Armies!
Where is there anyone as mighty as you, O Lord?
You are entirely faithful.

You rule the oceans.
You subdue their storm-tossed waves.
10 You crushed the great sea monster.[b]
You scattered your enemies with your mighty arm.
11 The heavens are yours, and the earth is yours;
everything in the world is yours—you created it all.
12 You created north and south.
Mount Tabor and Mount Hermon praise your name.
13 Powerful is your arm!
Strong is your hand!
Your right hand is lifted high in glorious strength.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Friday October 18, 2019 (NIV)

Jeremiah 31:27-32:44

27 “The day is coming,” says the Lord, “when I will greatly increase the human population and the number of animals here in Israel and Judah. 28 In the past I deliberately uprooted and tore down this nation. I overthrew it, destroyed it, and brought disaster upon it. But in the future I will just as deliberately plant it and build it up. I, the Lord, have spoken!

29 “The people will no longer quote this proverb:

‘The parents have eaten sour grapes,
but their children’s mouths pucker at the taste.’

30 All people will die for their own sins—those who eat the sour grapes will be the ones whose mouths will pucker.

31 “The day is coming,” says the Lord, “when I will make a new covenant with the people of Israel and Judah. 32 This covenant will not be like the one I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand and brought them out of the land of Egypt. They broke that covenant, though I loved them as a husband loves his wife,” says the Lord.

33 “But this is the new covenant I will make with the people of Israel after those days,” says the Lord. “I will put my instructions deep within them, and I will write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. 34 And they will not need to teach their neighbors, nor will they need to teach their relatives, saying, ‘You should know the Lord.’ For everyone, from the least to the greatest, will know me already,” says the Lord. “And I will forgive their wickedness, and I will never again remember their sins.”

35 It is the Lord who provides the sun to light the day
and the moon and stars to light the night,
and who stirs the sea into roaring waves.
His name is the Lord of Heaven’s Armies,
and this is what he says:
36 “I am as likely to reject my people Israel
as I am to abolish the laws of nature!”
37 This is what the Lord says:
“Just as the heavens cannot be measured
and the foundations of the earth cannot be explored,
so I will not consider casting them away
for the evil they have done.
I, the Lord, have spoken!

38 “The day is coming,” says the Lord, “when all Jerusalem will be rebuilt for me, from the Tower of Hananel to the Corner Gate. 39 A measuring line will be stretched out over the hill of Gareb and across to Goah. 40 And the entire area—including the graveyard and ash dump in the valley, and all the fields out to the Kidron Valley on the east as far as the Horse Gate—will be holy to the Lord. The city will never again be captured or destroyed.”

Jeremiah’s Land Purchase

32 The following message came to Jeremiah from the Lord in the tenth year of the reign of Zedekiah,[a] king of Judah. This was also the eighteenth year of the reign of King Nebuchadnezzar.[b] Jerusalem was then under siege from the Babylonian army, and Jeremiah was imprisoned in the courtyard of the guard in the royal palace. King Zedekiah had put him there, asking why he kept giving this prophecy: “This is what the Lord says: ‘I am about to hand this city over to the king of Babylon, and he will take it. King Zedekiah will be captured by the Babylonians[c] and taken to meet the king of Babylon face to face. He will take Zedekiah to Babylon, and I will deal with him there,’ says the Lord. ‘If you fight against the Babylonians, you will never succeed.’”

At that time the Lord sent me a message. He said, “Your cousin Hanamel son of Shallum will come and say to you, ‘Buy my field at Anathoth. By law you have the right to buy it before it is offered to anyone else.’”

Then, just as the Lord had said he would, my cousin Hanamel came and visited me in the prison. He said, “Please buy my field at Anathoth in the land of Benjamin. By law you have the right to buy it before it is offered to anyone else, so buy it for yourself.” Then I knew that the message I had heard was from the Lord.

So I bought the field at Anathoth, paying Hanamel seventeen pieces[d] of silver for it. 10 I signed and sealed the deed of purchase before witnesses, weighed out the silver, and paid him. 11 Then I took the sealed deed and an unsealed copy of the deed, which contained the terms and conditions of the purchase, 12 and I handed them to Baruch son of Neriah and grandson of Mahseiah. I did all this in the presence of my cousin Hanamel, the witnesses who had signed the deed, and all the men of Judah who were there in the courtyard of the guardhouse.

13 Then I said to Baruch as they all listened, 14 “This is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, the God of Israel, says: ‘Take both this sealed deed and the unsealed copy, and put them into a pottery jar to preserve them for a long time.’ 15 For this is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, the God of Israel, says: ‘Someday people will again own property here in this land and will buy and sell houses and vineyards and fields.’”

Jeremiah’s Prayer

16 Then after I had given the papers to Baruch, I prayed to the Lord:

17 “O Sovereign Lord! You made the heavens and earth by your strong hand and powerful arm. Nothing is too hard for you! 18 You show unfailing love to thousands, but you also bring the consequences of one generation’s sin upon the next. You are the great and powerful God, the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. 19 You have all wisdom and do great and mighty miracles. You see the conduct of all people, and you give them what they deserve. 20 You performed miraculous signs and wonders in the land of Egypt—things still remembered to this day! And you have continued to do great miracles in Israel and all around the world. You have made your name famous to this day.

21 “You brought Israel out of Egypt with mighty signs and wonders, with a strong hand and powerful arm, and with overwhelming terror. 22 You gave the people of Israel this land that you had promised their ancestors long before—a land flowing with milk and honey. 23 Our ancestors came and conquered it and lived in it, but they refused to obey you or follow your word. They have not done anything you commanded. That is why you have sent this terrible disaster upon them.

24 “See how the siege ramps have been built against the city walls! Through war, famine, and disease, the city will be handed over to the Babylonians, who will conquer it. Everything has happened just as you said. 25 And yet, O Sovereign Lord, you have told me to buy the field—paying good money for it before these witnesses—even though the city will soon be handed over to the Babylonians.”

A Prediction of Jerusalem’s Fall

26 Then this message came to Jeremiah from the Lord: 27 “I am the Lord, the God of all the peoples of the world. Is anything too hard for me? 28 Therefore, this is what the Lord says: I will hand this city over to the Babylonians and to Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, and he will capture it. 29 The Babylonians outside the walls will come in and set fire to the city. They will burn down all these houses where the people provoked my anger by burning incense to Baal on the rooftops and by pouring out liquid offerings to other gods. 30 Israel and Judah have done nothing but wrong since their earliest days. They have infuriated me with all their evil deeds,” says the Lord. 31 “From the time this city was built until now, it has done nothing but anger me, so I am determined to get rid of it.

32 “The sins of Israel and Judah—the sins of the people of Jerusalem, the kings, the officials, the priests, and the prophets—have stirred up my anger. 33 My people have turned their backs on me and have refused to return. Even though I diligently taught them, they would not receive instruction or obey. 34 They have set up their abominable idols right in my own Temple, defiling it. 35 They have built pagan shrines to Baal in the valley of Ben-Hinnom, and there they sacrifice their sons and daughters to Molech. I have never commanded such a horrible deed; it never even crossed my mind to command such a thing. What an incredible evil, causing Judah to sin so greatly!

A Promise of Restoration

36 “Now I want to say something more about this city. You have been saying, ‘It will fall to the king of Babylon through war, famine, and disease.’ But this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: 37 I will certainly bring my people back again from all the countries where I will scatter them in my fury. I will bring them back to this very city and let them live in peace and safety. 38 They will be my people, and I will be their God. 39 And I will give them one heart and one purpose: to worship me forever, for their own good and for the good of all their descendants. 40 And I will make an everlasting covenant with them: I will never stop doing good for them. I will put a desire in their hearts to worship me, and they will never leave me. 41 I will find joy doing good for them and will faithfully and wholeheartedly replant them in this land.

42 “This is what the Lord says: Just as I have brought all these calamities on them, so I will do all the good I have promised them. 43 Fields will again be bought and sold in this land about which you now say, ‘It has been ravaged by the Babylonians, a desolate land where people and animals have all disappeared.’ 44 Yes, fields will once again be bought and sold—deeds signed and sealed and witnessed—in the land of Benjamin and here in Jerusalem, in the towns of Judah and in the hill country, in the foothills of Judah[e] and in the Negev, too. For someday I will restore prosperity to them. I, the Lord, have spoken!”

1 Timothy 3

Leaders in the Church

This is a trustworthy saying: “If someone aspires to be a church leader,[a] he desires an honorable position.” So a church leader must be a man whose life is above reproach. He must be faithful to his wife.[b] He must exercise self-control, live wisely, and have a good reputation. He must enjoy having guests in his home, and he must be able to teach. He must not be a heavy drinker[c] or be violent. He must be gentle, not quarrelsome, and not love money. He must manage his own family well, having children who respect and obey him. For if a man cannot manage his own household, how can he take care of God’s church?

A church leader must not be a new believer, because he might become proud, and the devil would cause him to fall.[d] Also, people outside the church must speak well of him so that he will not be disgraced and fall into the devil’s trap.

In the same way, deacons must be well respected and have integrity. They must not be heavy drinkers or dishonest with money. They must be committed to the mystery of the faith now revealed and must live with a clear conscience. 10 Before they are appointed as deacons, let them be closely examined. If they pass the test, then let them serve as deacons.

11 In the same way, their wives[e] must be respected and must not slander others. They must exercise self-control and be faithful in everything they do.

12 A deacon must be faithful to his wife, and he must manage his children and household well. 13 Those who do well as deacons will be rewarded with respect from others and will have increased confidence in their faith in Christ Jesus.

The Truths of Our Faith

14 I am writing these things to you now, even though I hope to be with you soon, 15 so that if I am delayed, you will know how people must conduct themselves in the household of God. This is the church of the living God, which is the pillar and foundation of the truth.

16 Without question, this is the great mystery of our faith[f]:

Christ[g] was revealed in a human body
and vindicated by the Spirit.[h]
He was seen by angels
and announced to the nations.
He was believed in throughout the world
and taken to heaven in glory.

Psalm 88

Psalm 88

For the choir director: A psalm of the descendants of Korah. A song to be sung to the tune “The Suffering of Affliction.” A psalm[a] of Heman the Ezrahite.

O Lord, God of my salvation,
I cry out to you by day.
I come to you at night.
Now hear my prayer;
listen to my cry.
For my life is full of troubles,
and death[b] draws near.
I am as good as dead,
like a strong man with no strength left.
They have left me among the dead,
and I lie like a corpse in a grave.
I am forgotten,
cut off from your care.
You have thrown me into the lowest pit,
into the darkest depths.
Your anger weighs me down;
with wave after wave you have engulfed me. Interlude

You have driven my friends away
by making me repulsive to them.
I am in a trap with no way of escape.
My eyes are blinded by my tears.
Each day I beg for your help, O Lord;
I lift my hands to you for mercy.
10 Are your wonderful deeds of any use to the dead?
Do the dead rise up and praise you? Interlude

11 Can those in the grave declare your unfailing love?
Can they proclaim your faithfulness in the place of destruction?[c]
12 Can the darkness speak of your wonderful deeds?
Can anyone in the land of forgetfulness talk about your righteousness?
13 O Lord, I cry out to you.
I will keep on pleading day by day.
14 O Lord, why do you reject me?
Why do you turn your face from me?

15 I have been sick and close to death since my youth.
I stand helpless and desperate before your terrors.
16 Your fierce anger has overwhelmed me.
Your terrors have paralyzed me.
17 They swirl around me like floodwaters all day long.
They have engulfed me completely.
18 You have taken away my companions and loved ones.
Darkness is my closest friend.

Proverbs 25:20-22

20 Singing cheerful songs to a person with a heavy heart
is like taking someone’s coat in cold weather
or pouring vinegar in a wound.[a]

21 If your enemies are hungry, give them food to eat.
If they are thirsty, give them water to drink.
22 You will heap burning coals of shame on their heads,
and the Lord will reward you.

Jeremiah 30:1-31:26, 1 Timothy 2:1-15, Psalms 87:1-7, Proverbs 25:18-19

Today is the 17th day of October. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian. It’s great, of course, to be here with you as it is every day that…that we step into the firelight of the global campfire and allow God’s word to speak to us and take the next step forward, not only in our journey with the Bible, but also our journey in life. So, it's…it’s a joy to take his next step forward together with you and we’ll be going back into the book of Jeremiah. Today chapter 30 verse 1 through 31 verse 26 and we’re reading from the New Living Translation this week.

Prayer:

Father, we thank you for your word. We thank you for your kindness. We thank you for the way that your word speaks to us. Even as we read in Jeremiah today, so many of us have children who are wayward, and we’ve found ourselves concerned and it’s been a matter of prayer in the community here for us as long as we’ve been a community. And, so, this has always been an issue, but we read today, “your children will come back to you from the distant land of the enemy. There is hope for your future, says the Lord. Your children will come again to their own land”. And even though we know we’re reading prophetic words about bringing those from exile home this still seems so deeply to apply in our own lives and the relationships that have become wayward or have gone astray or have been lost. And, so, we pray Lord, for those…those who are in exile, those who once walked with you, but have in one way or another, walked away and walked right into their own captivity. Set them free Father. We pray in the mighty name of Jesus. Amen.

We’ll be going back to the land of the Bible this coming February and there are a small handful of spaces available on that trip just simply due to some cancellations. So, if going to the land of the Bible has been kind of something on your bucket list you may want to check that out. I know that it was actually never on my bucket list until I went and that just radically changed things, not in the way you might be thinking. It just…it made the Bible come alive. It just makes a difference to stand in a place that you’ve been reading about your whole life and, you know, imagining…just imagining the things that happened there. When you’re actually standing there and going, “that happened right…like this is a real place. This…this really happened” and just to feel the crunch of the…the earth beneath your feet and being able to turn in a circle, you know, just things that you can’t do when you’re looking at pictures or just the smells of the different places. Like, you just can’t get that any other way. So, yeah, we’ve been going back every year since, taking a pilgrimage each year, because it just…it does that. It makes the Bible…you can’t see the Bible same after that. So, anyway, there’s a…there’s a little handful of spots. So, if you wanna…if you wanna come along, check it out at dailyaudiobible.com in the Initiatives section.

Jeremiah 30:1-31:26

Promises of Deliverance

30 The Lord gave another message to Jeremiah. He said, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: Write down for the record everything I have said to you, Jeremiah. For the time is coming when I will restore the fortunes of my people of Israel and Judah. I will bring them home to this land that I gave to their ancestors, and they will possess it again. I, the Lord, have spoken!”

This is the message the Lord gave concerning Israel and Judah. This is what the Lord says:

“I hear cries of fear;
there is terror and no peace.
Now let me ask you a question:
Do men give birth to babies?
Then why do they stand there, ashen-faced,
hands pressed against their sides
like a woman in labor?
In all history there has never been such a time of terror.
It will be a time of trouble for my people Israel.[a]
Yet in the end they will be saved!
For in that day,”
says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies,
“I will break the yoke from their necks
and snap their chains.
Foreigners will no longer be their masters.
For my people will serve the Lord their God
and their king descended from David—
the king I will raise up for them.

10 “So do not be afraid, Jacob, my servant;
do not be dismayed, Israel,”
says the Lord.
“For I will bring you home again from distant lands,
and your children will return from their exile.
Israel will return to a life of peace and quiet,
and no one will terrorize them.
11 For I am with you and will save you,”
says the Lord.
“I will completely destroy the nations where I have scattered you,
but I will not completely destroy you.
I will discipline you, but with justice;
I cannot let you go unpunished.”

12 This is what the Lord says:
“Your injury is incurable—
a terrible wound.
13 There is no one to help you
or to bind up your injury.
No medicine can heal you.
14 All your lovers—your allies—have left you
and do not care about you anymore.
I have wounded you cruelly,
as though I were your enemy.
For your sins are many,
and your guilt is great.
15 Why do you protest your punishment—
this wound that has no cure?
I have had to punish you
because your sins are many
and your guilt is great.

16 “But all who devour you will be devoured,
and all your enemies will be sent into exile.
All who plunder you will be plundered,
and all who attack you will be attacked.
17 I will give you back your health
and heal your wounds,” says the Lord.
“For you are called an outcast—
‘Jerusalem[b] for whom no one cares.’”

18 This is what the Lord says:
“When I bring Israel home again from captivity
and restore their fortunes,
Jerusalem will be rebuilt on its ruins,
and the palace reconstructed as before.
19 There will be joy and songs of thanksgiving,
and I will multiply my people, not diminish them;
I will honor them, not despise them.
20 Their children will prosper as they did long ago.
I will establish them as a nation before me,
and I will punish anyone who hurts them.
21 They will have their own ruler again,
and he will come from their own people.
I will invite him to approach me,” says the Lord,
“for who would dare to come unless invited?
22 You will be my people,
and I will be your God.”

23 Look! The Lord’s anger bursts out like a storm,
a driving wind that swirls down on the heads of the wicked.
24 The fierce anger of the Lord will not diminish
until it has finished all he has planned.
In the days to come
you will understand all this.

Hope for Restoration

31 “In that day,” says the Lord, “I will be the God of all the families of Israel, and they will be my people. This is what the Lord says:

“Those who survive the coming destruction
will find blessings even in the barren land,
for I will give rest to the people of Israel.”

Long ago the Lord said to Israel:
“I have loved you, my people, with an everlasting love.
With unfailing love I have drawn you to myself.
I will rebuild you, my virgin Israel.
You will again be happy
and dance merrily with your tambourines.
Again you will plant your vineyards on the mountains of Samaria
and eat from your own gardens there.
The day will come when watchmen will shout
from the hill country of Ephraim,
‘Come, let us go up to Jerusalem[c]
to worship the Lord our God.’”

Now this is what the Lord says:
“Sing with joy for Israel.[d]
Shout for the greatest of nations!
Shout out with praise and joy:
‘Save your people, O Lord,
the remnant of Israel!’
For I will bring them from the north
and from the distant corners of the earth.
I will not forget the blind and lame,
the expectant mothers and women in labor.
A great company will return!
Tears of joy will stream down their faces,
and I will lead them home with great care.
They will walk beside quiet streams
and on smooth paths where they will not stumble.
For I am Israel’s father,
and Ephraim is my oldest child.

10 “Listen to this message from the Lord,
you nations of the world;
proclaim it in distant coastlands:
The Lord, who scattered his people,
will gather them and watch over them
as a shepherd does his flock.
11 For the Lord has redeemed Israel
from those too strong for them.
12 They will come home and sing songs of joy on the heights of Jerusalem.
They will be radiant because of the Lord’s good gifts—
the abundant crops of grain, new wine, and olive oil,
and the healthy flocks and herds.
Their life will be like a watered garden,
and all their sorrows will be gone.
13 The young women will dance for joy,
and the men—old and young—will join in the celebration.
I will turn their mourning into joy.
I will comfort them and exchange their sorrow for rejoicing.
14 The priests will enjoy abundance,
and my people will feast on my good gifts.
I, the Lord, have spoken!”

Rachel’s Sadness Turns to Joy

15 This is what the Lord says:

“A cry is heard in Ramah—
deep anguish and bitter weeping.
Rachel weeps for her children,
refusing to be comforted—
for her children are gone.”

16 But now this is what the Lord says:
“Do not weep any longer,
for I will reward you,” says the Lord.
“Your children will come back to you
from the distant land of the enemy.
17 There is hope for your future,” says the Lord.
“Your children will come again to their own land.
18 I have heard Israel[e] saying,
‘You disciplined me severely,
like a calf that needs training for the yoke.
Turn me again to you and restore me,
for you alone are the Lord my God.
19 I turned away from God,
but then I was sorry.
I kicked myself for my stupidity!
I was thoroughly ashamed of all I did in my younger days.’

20 “Is not Israel still my son,
my darling child?” says the Lord.
“I often have to punish him,
but I still love him.
That’s why I long for him
and surely will have mercy on him.
21 Set up road signs;
put up guideposts.
Mark well the path
by which you came.
Come back again, my virgin Israel;
return to your towns here.
22 How long will you wander,
my wayward daughter?
For the Lord will cause something new to happen—
Israel will embrace her God.[f]

23 This is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, the God of Israel, says: “When I bring them back from captivity, the people of Judah and its towns will again say, ‘The Lord bless you, O righteous home, O holy mountain!’ 24 Townspeople and farmers and shepherds alike will live together in peace and happiness. 25 For I have given rest to the weary and joy to the sorrowing.”

26 At this, I woke up and looked around. My sleep had been very sweet.

1 Timothy 2

Instructions about Worship

I urge you, first of all, to pray for all people. Ask God to help them; intercede on their behalf, and give thanks for them. Pray this way for kings and all who are in authority so that we can live peaceful and quiet lives marked by godliness and dignity. This is good and pleases God our Savior, who wants everyone to be saved and to understand the truth. For,

There is one God and one Mediator who can reconcile God and humanity—the man Christ Jesus. He gave his life to purchase freedom for everyone.

This is the message God gave to the world at just the right time. And I have been chosen as a preacher and apostle to teach the Gentiles this message about faith and truth. I’m not exaggerating—just telling the truth.

In every place of worship, I want men to pray with holy hands lifted up to God, free from anger and controversy.

And I want women to be modest in their appearance.[a] They should wear decent and appropriate clothing and not draw attention to themselves by the way they fix their hair or by wearing gold or pearls or expensive clothes. 10 For women who claim to be devoted to God should make themselves attractive by the good things they do.

11 Women should learn quietly and submissively. 12 I do not let women teach men or have authority over them.[b] Let them listen quietly. 13 For God made Adam first, and afterward he made Eve. 14 And it was not Adam who was deceived by Satan. The woman was deceived, and sin was the result. 15 But women will be saved through childbearing,[c] assuming they continue to live in faith, love, holiness, and modesty.

Footnotes:

  1. 2:9 Or to pray in modest apparel.
  2. 2:12 Or teach men or usurp their authority.
  3. 2:15 Or will be saved by accepting their role as mothers, or will be saved by the birth of the Child.

Psalm 87

Psalm 87

A song. A psalm of the descendants of Korah.

On the holy mountain
stands the city founded by the Lord.
He loves the city of Jerusalem
more than any other city in Israel.[a]
O city of God,
what glorious things are said of you! Interlude

I will count Egypt[b] and Babylon among those who know me—
also Philistia and Tyre, and even distant Ethiopia.[c]
They have all become citizens of Jerusalem!
Regarding Jerusalem[d] it will be said,
“Everyone enjoys the rights of citizenship there.”
And the Most High will personally bless this city.
When the Lord registers the nations, he will say,
“They have all become citizens of Jerusalem.” Interlude

The people will play flutes[e] and sing,
“The source of my life springs from Jerusalem!”

Proverbs 25:18-19

18 Telling lies about others
is as harmful as hitting them with an ax,
wounding them with a sword,
or shooting them with a sharp arrow.

19 Putting confidence in an unreliable person in times of trouble
is like chewing with a broken tooth or walking on a lame foot.
