Nehemiah 12:27-13:31

Nehemiah Dedicates the City Wall

27 When the city wall of Jerusalem was dedicated, the Levites were brought in from wherever they were living, so that they could join in celebrating the dedication with songs of thanksgiving and with the music of cymbals and harps. 28 The Levite families of singers gathered from the area where they had settled around Jerusalem and from the towns around Netophah, 29 and from Bethgilgal, Geba, and Azmaveth. 30 The priests and the Levites performed ritual purification for themselves, the people, the gates, and the city wall.

31 I assembled the leaders of Judah on top of the wall and put them in charge of two large groups to march around the city, giving thanks to God.

The first group went to the right on top of the wall toward the Rubbish Gate.[a] 32 Hoshaiah marched behind the singers, followed by half the leaders of Judah. 33-35 The following priests, blowing trumpets, marched next: Azariah, Ezra, Meshullam, Judah, Benjamin, Shemaiah, and Jeremiah. Next came Zechariah, the son of Jonathan and grandson of Shemaiah. (His ancestors also included Mattaniah, Micaiah, and Zaccur, of the clan of Asaph.) 36 He was followed by other members of his clan—Shemaiah, Azarel, Milalai, Gilalai, Maai, Nethanel, Judah, and Hanani—all of whom carried musical instruments of the kind played by King David, the man of God. Ezra the scholar led this group in the procession. 37 At the Fountain Gate they went up the steps that led to David's City, past David's palace, and back to the wall at the Water Gate, on the east side of the city.

38 The other group of those who gave thanks went to the left along the top of the wall, and I followed with half of the people. We marched past the Tower of the Ovens to the Broad Wall, 39 and from there we went past Ephraim Gate, Jeshanah Gate,[b] the Fish Gate, the Tower of Hananel, and the Tower of the Hundred, to the Sheep Gate. We ended our march near the gate to the Temple.

40 So both the groups that were giving thanks to God reached the Temple area.

In addition to the leaders who were with me, 41 my group included the following priests, blowing trumpets: Eliakim, Maaseiah, Miniamin, Micaiah, Elioenai, Zechariah, and Hananiah; 42 and they were followed by Maaseiah, Shemaiah, Eleazar, Uzzi, Jehohanan, Malchijah, Elam, and Ezer. The singers, led by Jezrahiah, sang at the top of their voices.

43 That day many sacrifices were offered, and the people were full of joy because God had made them very happy. The women and the children joined in the celebration, and the noise they all made could be heard for miles.

Providing for Worship in the Temple

44 At that time men were put in charge of the storerooms where contributions for the Temple were kept, including the tithes and the first grain and fruit that ripened each year. These men were responsible for collecting from the farms near the various cities the contributions for the priests and the Levites which the Law required. All the people of Judah were pleased with the priests and the Levites, 45 (A)because they performed the ceremonies of purification and the other rituals that God had commanded. The Temple musicians and the Temple guards also performed their duties in accordance with the regulations made by King David and his son Solomon. 46 From the time of King David and the musician Asaph long ago, the musicians have led songs of praise and thanksgiving to God. 47 In the time of Zerubbabel and also in the time of Nehemiah, all the people of Israel gave daily gifts for the support of the Temple musicians and the Temple guards. The people gave a sacred offering to the Levites, and the Levites gave the required portion to the priests.

Separation from Foreigners

13 (B)When the Law of Moses was being read aloud to the people, they came to the passage that said that no Ammonite or Moabite was ever to be permitted to join God's people. (C)This was because the people of Ammon and Moab did not give food and water to the Israelites on their way out of Egypt. Instead, they paid money to Balaam to curse Israel, but our God turned the curse into a blessing. When the people of Israel heard this law read, they excluded all foreigners from the community.

Nehemiah's Reforms

The priest Eliashib, who was in charge of the Temple storerooms, had for a long time been on good terms with Tobiah. He allowed Tobiah to use a large room that was intended only for storing offerings of grain and incense, the equipment used in the Temple, the offerings for the priests, and the tithes of grain, wine, and olive oil given to the Levites, to the Temple musicians, and to the Temple guards. While this was going on, I was not in Jerusalem, because in the thirty-second year that Artaxerxes[c] was king of Babylon I had gone back to report to him. After some time I received his permission and returned to Jerusalem. There I was shocked to find that Eliashib had allowed Tobiah to use a room in the Temple. I was furious and threw out all of Tobiah's belongings. I gave orders for the rooms to be ritually purified and for the Temple equipment, grain offerings, and incense to be put back.

10 (D)I also learned that the Temple musicians and other Levites had left Jerusalem and gone back to their farms, because the people had not been giving them enough to live on. 11 I reprimanded the officials for letting the Temple be neglected. And I brought the Levites and musicians back to the Temple and put them to work again. 12 (E)Then all the people of Israel again started bringing to the Temple storerooms their tithes of grain, wine, and olive oil. 13 I put the following men in charge of the storerooms: Shelemiah, a priest; Zadok, a scholar of the Law; and Pedaiah, a Levite. Hanan, the son of Zaccur and grandson of Mattaniah, was to be their assistant. I knew I could trust these men to be honest in distributing the supplies to the other workers.

14 Remember, my God, all these things that I have done for your Temple and its worship.

15 (F)At that time I saw people in Judah pressing juice from grapes on the Sabbath. Others were loading grain, wine, grapes, figs, and other things on their donkeys and taking them into Jerusalem; I warned them not to sell anything on the Sabbath. 16 Some people from the city of Tyre were living in Jerusalem, and they brought fish and all kinds of goods into the city to sell to our people on the Sabbath. 17 I reprimanded the Jewish leaders and told them, “Look at the evil you're doing! You're making the Sabbath unholy. 18 This is exactly why God punished your ancestors when he brought destruction on this city. And yet you insist on bringing more of God's anger down on Israel by profaning the Sabbath.”

19 So I gave orders for the city gates to be shut at the beginning of every Sabbath, as soon as evening[d] began to fall, and not to be opened again until the Sabbath was over. I stationed some of my men at the gates to make sure that nothing was brought into the city on the Sabbath. 20 Once or twice merchants who sold all kinds of goods spent Friday night outside the city walls. 21 I warned them, “It's no use waiting out there for morning to come. If you try this again, I'll use force on you.” From then on they did not come back on the Sabbath. 22 I ordered the Levites to purify themselves and to go and guard the gates to make sure that the Sabbath was kept holy.

Remember me, O God, for this also, and spare me because of your great love.

23 (G)At that time I also discovered that many of the Jewish men had married women from Ashdod, Ammon, and Moab. 24 Half of their children spoke the language of Ashdod or some other language and didn't know how to speak our language. 25 I reprimanded the men, called down curses on them, beat them, and pulled out their hair. Then I made them take an oath in God's name that never again would they or their children intermarry with foreigners. 26 (H)I told them, “It was foreign women that made King Solomon sin. Here was a man who was greater than any of the kings of other nations. God loved him and made him king over all of Israel, and yet he fell into this sin. 27 Are we then to follow your example and disobey our God by marrying foreign women?”

28 (I)Joiada was the son of Eliashib the High Priest, but one of Joiada's sons married the daughter of Sanballat, from the town of Beth Horon, so I made Joiada leave Jerusalem.

29 Remember, God, how those people defiled both the office of priest and the covenant you made with the priests and the Levites.

30 I purified the people from everything foreign; I prepared regulations for the priests and the Levites so that all of them would know their duties; 31 I arranged for the wood used for burning the offerings to be brought at the proper times, and for the people to bring their offerings of the first grain and the first fruits that ripened.

Remember all this, O God, and give me credit for it.

1 Corinthians 11:1-16

11 (A)Imitate me, then, just as I imitate Christ.

Covering the Head in Worship

I praise you because you always remember me and follow the teachings that I have handed on to you. But I want you to understand that Christ is supreme over every man, the husband is supreme over his wife, and God is supreme over Christ. So a man who prays or proclaims God's message in public worship with his head covered disgraces Christ. And any woman who prays or proclaims God's message in public worship with nothing on her head disgraces her husband; there is no difference between her and a woman whose head has been shaved. If the woman does not cover her head, she might as well cut her hair. And since it is a shameful thing for a woman to shave her head or cut her hair, she should cover her head. (B)A man has no need to cover his head, because he reflects the image and glory of God. But woman reflects the glory of man; (C)for man was not created from woman, but woman from man. Nor was man created for woman's sake, but woman was created for man's sake. 10 On account of the angels, then, a woman should have a covering over her head to show that she is under her husband's authority. 11 In our life in the Lord, however, woman is not independent of man, nor is man independent of woman. 12 For as woman was made from man, in the same way man is born of woman; and it is God who brings everything into existence.

13 Judge for yourselves whether it is proper for a woman to pray to God in public worship with nothing on her head. 14 Why, nature itself teaches you that long hair on a man is a disgrace, 15 but on a woman it is a thing of beauty. Her long hair has been given her to serve as a covering. 16 But if anyone wants to argue about it, all I have to say is that neither we nor the churches of God have any other custom in worship.

Psalm 35:1-16

A Prayer for Help[a]

35 Oppose those who oppose me, Lord,
and fight those who fight against me!
Take your shield and armor
and come to my rescue.
Lift up your spear and war ax
against those who pursue me.
Promise that you will save me.

May those who try to kill me
be defeated and disgraced!
May those who plot against me
be turned back and confused!
May they be like straw blown by the wind
as the angel of the Lord pursues them!
May their path be dark and slippery
while the angel of the Lord strikes them down!

Without any reason they laid a trap for me
and dug a deep hole to catch me.
But destruction will catch them before they know it;
they will be caught in their own trap
and fall to their destruction!

Then I will be glad because of the Lord;
I will be happy because he saved me.
10 With all my heart I will say to the Lord,
“There is no one like you.
You protect the weak from the strong,
the poor from the oppressor.”

11 Evil people testify against me
and accuse me of crimes I know nothing about.
12 They pay me back evil for good,
and I sink in despair.
13 But when they were sick, I dressed in mourning;
I deprived myself of food;
I prayed with my head bowed low,
14 as I would pray for a friend or a brother.
I went around bent over in mourning,
as one who mourns for his mother.

15 But when I was in trouble, they were all glad
and gathered around to make fun of me;
strangers beat me
and kept striking me.
16 Like those who would mock a cripple,[b]
they glared at me with hate.

Today is the 16th day of August, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian and it’s a pleasure and an honor as it is every day to be in your presence to reach out through all of these miles of wires and land in your earbuds or however, in whatever speaker you’re using. It’s great to be here with you today, wherever you might be. It’s lovely here in the rolling hills of Tennessee. We’re in the steamy thick of the summer time but it’s, hot as it might be, very beautiful, lovely, fertile time here in the rolling hills. And I hope it’s lovely wherever you might be. So, we’re reading from the Good News Translation this week and we’ll pick up where we left off yesterday in the book of Nehemiah, chapter 11 verse 1 through 12 verse 26 today.

Commentary:

Okay. In Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians [blablablablablabla]. In First Corinthians today, Paul answered a question about passively participating in what would otherwise be sinful activity. And the specific issue was whether a person could eat meat sacrificed to a false idol. So, in Corinth Greek and Roman gods were worshiped and the meat from those sacrifices found their way into the meat market, making it virtually impossible for a believer to know whether they were eating sacrificed meat and thereby passively participating in idolatry. Paul was making it clear today that the meat wasn’t the issue and they could eat in good conscience, but actively attempting to put one foot in the body of Christ and another in idol worship was something that was not gonna to work. In other words, the meat wasn’t the issue, the posture of heart was the issue. But this raised other questions, what if a friend or associate who worshiped another God invited a believer to share a meal, that meal could have been sacrificed to an idol and the household to be eating it in the idols honor. Wouldn’t that be participating in idolatry? And Paul said, someone who isn’t a believer asks you home for dinner, than accept the invitation if you want to and eat whatever’s offered to you without raising questions, right? But if someone tells you this meat was offered to an idol, well, then don’t eat it because someone told you that. Like, if your host said, oh, hey I know you worship Jesus, but this particular hamburger was sacrificed to Molech. If someone’s telling you that, whether your host or another guest, they’re telling you that for reason because they know what you believe. So, if it’s brought up then, of course, abstain. So, I mean, today we rarely, if ever, consider whether our food supply been part of a cultic ritual, but the underlying principle applies in all kinds of ways. We must be vigilantly aware of the effect of our lives on others and treat them with respect and honor, especially if they are giving respect and honor to our convictions. So, Paul summarized it and, I mean, and the way that he summarized this, it touches everything. So here’s how Paul said to handle these kinds of situations. Whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God, which leaves us one simple question that can always be asked before every decision we make. Can I do this for the glory of God? If the answer is no, then don’t do it. If the answer is yes, then you’re free to do it. I mean, if we would just keep that one thing before us. Can I do this for the glory of God? If we would keep that before us in all of our dealings imagine the clarity we would have in our lives for navigating this world.

Prayer:

Father, every day we invite you into what we’ve read. We ask you to apply it to our lives and plant it deep within our hearts and we’re asking that again, that we might remember that as we’re navigating through this day, as were interacting with people and making choices and decisions, that we will simply consider, take the moment to consult you. Can I do this to honor God? We pray for direction and clarity all of the time about our next steps when you’ve given us the tools to discern these things. And we were given such counsel today. Can I do this for the glory of God. Come Holy Spirit into that question today. We ask in Jesus name. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hey Daily Audio Bible family. It’s Monica in Kentucky and I just wanted to share with you some gratitude. I am just really grateful to the people who call in in the good times and in the bad times who want to call in and give encouragement but also to call in and just plead for help. And just a few that come to mind, Pastor Gene, we’re are all praying for you for job interviews then you call in and you encourage everybody and you just give us a good word about the Lord. And Miguel in Santa Rosa, and Lee, and Mark Street, and so many others that just call in when they’re hurting and struggling but also give a good word of encouragement and just praise and glorification of our Lord and Father. So, just keep it up people. Blind Tony, you’re another one. You cut to the quick but then you also just talk about how good and great everything is and how good and great our God is through your poetry. And I’m just so moved so often. Terry the Trucker, you’re another one. You confess your sin, you tell us how you’re struggling, but then you call in and tell us how good God is and how encouraged you are when people shout you out and tell you that there praying for you. There’s so many others on the line and I just want to thank everybody who just keep it real. Jay from Tennessee. You’re another one. I could go on and on and I just want to thank everybody because day and and day out it’s nothing but good encouragement and truth that shows up here through the family. So, he blessed and have a great week. Bye.

It’s August the 12th, 2018. It’s about 7:19 PM here in California. Greetings from California by beloved friends of God. This is Angel and I am giving my Father praise and thanks for allowing me to report to you that my brain surgery was a success. It confounded all the doctors and they said the surgery went amazingly well. I had two aneurysms embedded in my brain and they were quite large in size. And one of them was about to burst. Friday, August the 10th, 2018 I was scheduled for surgery and they went inside and found a __ aneurysm. So they placed __ . The surgery was to take six hours and I was out of the hospital the following day. Unbelievable! This was Saturday, August 11th, 2018. Laurie from North Carolina, Becky from Tampa, and all the other friends, thank you for your compassion. Thank you Brian and Jill for making this podcast available and blessing me. I am praying for all requests coming in. __ . God is still on the throne. And prayer changes __ . Angel from California.

Hi. My name’s Adam. This is my first time calling although I’ve been listening for a few years now. I’m calling today, it’s 530 in the morning on August 13th and we are about to head to the hospital for my second daughter to be born. I’m just calling today to ask for prayer for health for both her and my wife but also for prayer for my daughter’s well-being in growing up in the church and in Christ and for my wife and I to be good role models of that. So, thank you for hearing me and thank you for being such a great community and family. Bye.

Hey DAB family it’s Nobody Gets Left Behind in Colorado. I just want to say hi to everybody and just let you all know that today is my husband and my 13th anniversary. Today, on this day 13 years ago, on the 13th we got married and I’m just so grateful to God for everything he’s done with our marriage. And we’ve come a long way only by the grace of God and give God all the glory and honor for our marriage. It’s funny because I woke up this morning, I get up at 5 o’clock to make his lunch. And I got up this morning and I noticed as he stuck all of the pizza boxes and stuff in the trash and it filled up the trashcan. And my mind automatically started to complain and wonder why he did that. And I felt immediately God stop that and I heard His voice and I just heard Him say, why don’t you just wake up and be grateful every day for everything. Just wake up with that in your mind instead of complaining. Funny thing is is that our proverb today was about the nagging wife. So, I thought that was pretty interesting but I am just so grateful to God for stopping me in that moment and, you know, and at the same time He reminded me it was our anniversary and had I continued to think like that way…I would’ve…my husband would’ve got out of bed and our anniversary would’ve been blown from, you know, bad thoughts. I just wanted to encourage everybody. I love you all. I’m praying for you Ashton family, everybody. I love you guys. Have a good week.

Nehemiah 11:1-12:26

The People Who Lived in Jerusalem

11 The leaders settled in Jerusalem, and the rest of the people drew lots to choose one family out of every ten to go and live in the holy city of Jerusalem, while the rest were to live in the other cities and towns. The people praised anyone else who volunteered to live in Jerusalem. (A)In the other towns and cities the people of Israel, the priests, the Levites, the Temple workers, and the descendants of Solomon's servants lived on their own property in their own towns.

The following is the list of the leading citizens of the province of Judah who lived in Jerusalem:

Members of the tribe of Judah

Athaiah, the son of Uzziah and grandson of Zechariah. His other ancestors included Amariah, Shephatiah, and Mahalalel, descendants of Judah's son Perez.

Maaseiah, the son of Baruch and grandson of Colhozeh. His other ancestors included Hazaiah, Adaiah, Joiarib, and Zechariah, descendants of Judah's son Shelah.

Of the descendants of Perez, 468 outstanding soldiers lived in Jerusalem.

Members of the tribe of Benjamin

Sallu, the son of Meshullam and grandson of Joed. His other ancestors included Pedaiah, Kolaiah, Maaseiah, Ithiel, and Jeshaiah.

Gabbai and Sallai, close relatives[a] of Sallu.

In all, 928 Benjaminites lived in Jerusalem. Joel son of Zichri was their leader, and Judah son of Hassenuah was the second ranking official in the city.

Priests

10 Jedaiah son of Joiarib, and Jachin.

11 Seraiah, the son of Hilkiah and grandson of Meshullam. His ancestors included Zadok, Meraioth, and Ahitub, who was the High Priest. 12 In all, 822 members of this clan served in the Temple.

Adaiah, the son of Jeroham and grandson of Pelaliah. His ancestors included Amzi, Zechariah, Pashhur, and Malchijah. 13 In all, 242 members of this clan were heads of families.

Amashsai, the son of Azarel and grandson of Ahzai. His ancestors included Meshillemoth and Immer. 14 There were 128 members of this clan who were outstanding soldiers. Their leader was Zabdiel, a member of a leading family.[b]

Levites

15 Shemaiah, the son of Hasshub and grandson of Azrikam. His ancestors included Hashabiah and Bunni.

16 Shabbethai and Jozabad, prominent Levites in charge of the work outside the Temple.

17 Mattaniah, the son of Mica and grandson of Zabdi, a descendant of Asaph. He led the Temple choir in singing the prayer of thanksgiving.

Bakbukiah, who was Mattaniah's assistant.

Abda, the son of Shammua and grandson of Galal, a descendant of Jeduthun.

18 In all, 284 Levites lived in the holy city of Jerusalem.

Temple guards

19 Akkub, Talmon, and their relatives, 172 in all.

20 The rest of the people of Israel and the remaining priests and Levites lived on their own property in the other cities and towns of Judah. 21 The Temple workers lived in the part of Jerusalem called Ophel and worked under the supervision of Ziha and Gishpa.

22 The supervisor of the Levites who lived in Jerusalem was Uzzi, the son of Bani and grandson of Hashabiah. His ancestors included Mattaniah and Mica, and he belonged to the clan of Asaph, the clan that was responsible for the music in the Temple services. 23 There were royal regulations stating how the clans should take turns in leading the Temple music each day.

24 Pethahiah son of Meshezabel, of the clan of Zerah and the tribe of Judah, represented the people of Israel at the Persian court.

The People in Other Towns and Cities

25 Many of the people lived in towns near their farms. Those who were of the tribe of Judah lived in Kiriath Arba, Dibon, and Jekabzeel, and in the villages near these cities. 26 They also lived in the cities of Jeshua, Moladah, Bethpelet, 27 and Hazarshual, and in Beersheba and the villages around it. 28 They lived in the city of Ziklag, in Meconah and its villages, 29 in Enrimmon, in Zorah, in Jarmuth, 30 in Zanoah, in Adullam, and in the villages near these towns. They lived in Lachish and on the farms nearby, and in Azekah and its villages. That is to say, the people of Judah lived in the territory between Beersheba in the south and Hinnom Valley in the north.

31 The people of the tribe of Benjamin lived in Geba, Michmash, Ai, Bethel and the nearby villages, 32 Anathoth, Nob, Ananiah, 33 Hazor, Ramah, Gittaim, 34 Hadid, Zeboim, Neballat, 35 Lod, and Ono, and in Craftsmen's Valley. 36 Some groups of Levites that had lived in the territory of Judah were assigned to live with the people of Benjamin.

Record of the Priestly and Levite Families

22 A record was kept of the heads of the Levite families and of the priestly families during the lifetimes of the following High Priests: Eliashib, Joiada, Jonathan, and Jaddua. This record was finished when Darius was emperor of Persia.

23 The heads of the Levite families, however, were recorded in the official records only until the time of Jonathan, the grandson of Eliashib.

Assignment of Duties in the Temple

24 Under the direction of Hashabiah, Sherebiah, Jeshua, Binnui,[d] and Kadmiel, the Levites were organized into groups. Two groups at a time praised God responsively and gave thanks to him, in accordance with the instructions given by King David, the man of God.

25 The following Temple guards were in charge of guarding the storerooms by the gates to the Temple: Mattaniah, Bakbukiah, Obadiah, Meshullam, Talmon, and Akkub.

26 These people lived during the time of Joiakim, the son of Joshua and grandson of Jehozadak, and the time of Nehemiah the governor, and the time of Ezra, the priest who was a scholar of the Law.

1 Corinthians 10:14-33

14 So then, my dear friends, keep away from the worship of idols. 15 I speak to you as sensible people; judge for yourselves what I say. 16 (A)The cup we use in the Lord's Supper and for which we give thanks to God: when we drink from it, we are sharing in the blood of Christ. And the bread we break: when we eat it, we are sharing in the body of Christ. 17 Because there is the one loaf of bread, all of us, though many, are one body, for we all share the same loaf.

18 (B)Consider the people of Israel; those who eat what is offered in sacrifice share in the altar's service to God. 19 Do I imply, then, that an idol or the food offered to it really amounts to anything? 20 (C)No! What I am saying is that what is sacrificed on pagan altars is offered to demons, not to God. And I do not want you to be partners with demons. 21 You cannot drink from the Lord's cup and also from the cup of demons; you cannot eat at the Lord's table and also at the table of demons. 22 (D)Or do we want to make the Lord jealous? Do we think that we are stronger than he?

23 (E)“We are allowed to do anything,” so they say. That is true, but not everything is good. “We are allowed to do anything”—but not everything is helpful. 24 None of you should be looking out for your own interests, but for the interests of others.

25 You are free to eat anything sold in the meat market, without asking any questions because of your conscience. 26 (F)For, as the scripture says, “The earth and everything in it belong to the Lord.”

27 If an unbeliever invites you to a meal and you decide to go, eat what is set before you, without asking any questions because of your conscience. 28 But if someone tells you, “This food was offered to idols,” then do not eat that food, for the sake of the one who told you and for conscience' sake— 29 that is, not your own conscience, but the other person's conscience.

“Well, then,” someone asks, “why should my freedom to act be limited by another person's conscience? 30 If I thank God for my food, why should anyone criticize me about food for which I give thanks?”

31 Well, whatever you do, whether you eat or drink, do it all for God's glory. 32 Live in such a way as to cause no trouble either to Jews or Gentiles or to the church of God. 33 Just do as I do; I try to please everyone in all that I do, not thinking of my own good, but of the good of all, so that they might be saved.

Psalm 34:11-22

11 Come, my young friends, and listen to me,

Do you want long life and happiness?
13 Then keep from speaking evil
and from telling lies.
14 Turn away from evil and do good;

15 The Lord watches over the righteous
and listens to their cries;

those who go to him for protection will be spared.

Commentary:

Okay. So, in 1 Corinthians, Paul continued to share his posture of ministry. And yesterday he spoke of the honorable right of those who had devoted themselves to ministry to be able to care for their needs and support their families from that work, even though he didn’t exercise that right. And today Paul discussed the fact that he was a free man but had found it meaningful to look at himself as a slave to all people. And in looking at the world through those eyes, Paul could reverence everyone no matter who they were. And then he encouraged us to consider this posture in our own lives. By understanding that it can be done, but it takes the same kind of self-discipline that an athlete must commit to in order to win. And one of those disciples is the vigilance required to observe the ways our hearts can be seduced or tempted. Paul said, If you think you are standing strong, be careful not to fall. The temptations in your life aren’t any different from what others experience. And God is faithful. And he will not allow you to be tempted more than you can stand. So, this example that Paul gave the Corinthians is one that we can all put to good use. We can lower ourselves. We can humble ourselves so that we might find common ground with whoever we’re talking to. We can understand that this posture is a discipline. It’s something that we learn a skill, a strength that we commit to. And we can learn from the past and choose not to repeat it. And we can be vigilant about things that would pull our hearts off course. These characteristics, if we want to call them that, these traits or behaviors, are all things that we would be able to say we can see them in Jesus. And, so, if we are in the pursuit of becoming Christ-like, than we must follow in the footsteps of the Savior.

Prayer:

Father, we commit to that. Self-discipline, it can be a very, very challenging thing. We can find ourselves seduced into all kinds of things, whether that be the candy bar we shouldn’t pick up at the gas station or things of much more significance. And this imagery of training like an athlete is imagery we can all understand today and has been able to be understood for thousands of years. This kind of vigilance and discipline and pursuit of the goal, of the prize. We understand that, we just don’t often apply it to our spiritual lives. So, often we’re leaning on grace, like we don’t have to really do any work because we can just lean on grace. And yet that’s not what Paul is instructing us to do. He’s instructing us to become strong and disciplined people, mature men and women of the kingdom of God, wielding the authority of the kingdom of God on this planet, which takes skill and discipline that we have to grow into. So, we see this and see the converse, the alternative that we don’t do this. And that we become weak and flabby and are tossed to and from by every wind of doctrine. And this life of faith never makes any sense because we never ever got any further than being an infant. Come, Holy Spirit. We wanna grow up. We wanna be effective men and women for Your kingdom on this earth, conduits that You can channel Your love through toward anyone, anywhere, anytime. Come Jesus we pray. In Your mighty name we ask. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hi family. This is Jeff Bernhardt calling from Canada. Just wanted to reach out and put a prayer request up there. I am in ministry and I’m also in business and at a real change of season in my life. A lot of things are shifting and moving and just really need clarity for where God wants me to go and the decisions He wants me to make. And I don’t typically reach out for prayer but I’ll tell you, when you pray with people you become more connected. I do feel more connected to this community. So, I’m just gonna throw it out there and ask you to pray for me and this situation, that God will give me wisdom and clarity and that the enemy wouldn’t be able to bring confusion or any type of fear at all. I’m really looking to step out in faith into this next season and just want to do what God’s calling me to do. And wanted to let you guys know that I am hearing your requests and I am praying for you, pretty much on a daily basis. Brian, love what you guys do and excited to be a part of this community. Anyway, have a very great week and wishing all the best for you all. Be blessed.

Hello DAB brothers and sisters. This is Rob Still, worship dude in Nashville Tennessee. It is Sunday morning, August 12th as I’m driving on my way to lead worship at church and I just wanted to implore you guys to remember your pastors and the people who serve on your church and read to remember to pray for them. They are men and women who have committed their lives to serving the body of Christ however flawed they may be. And they truly need the prayers and intercessions of their brothers and sisters. So, thank you for all of you guys who stay on the podcast and listen to the prayer requests. I listen to them. I don’t call a whole lot but thank you for all pray. Thank you for all who call in. Now for me, specifically, I am in a difficult situation this week and I really pray that you guys would just intercede, that the will of God would be done. May His kingdom come. Okay, that’s it for now. So, may the Lord richly bless you. Thank you for praying.

Hi DABbers. This is hopeful. I just want to thank you so much for all of your prayers for us to be able to get pregnant. I can’t tell you how much that has meant to me and I don’t know why it’s so hard for some of us to call but it is. It’s just hard for me. I want to also say that I’ve been praying for all of you every day I listen to this. Every single morning I walk my dog and I just lift each and every one of you up in prayer. And I just love you guys and I thank you for this. Brian and Jill, thank you for this amazing community. I wanted to continue to ask for prayer, of course, for us to be able to get pregnant. There’s a lot I haven’t shared and I want to also be able to say that I do have…I don’t know if it’s called a praise report, because I had a tumor at one point that was benign on my ovaries. And I’ve never looked at that as a blessing but I’m coming to realize the doctors had told me either I would wake up with one ovary and fallopian tube missing or I would wake up with having had a full hysterectomy and having to start chemotherapy. And I was going through a lot of that time. And it’s possible, it’s possible for me to be pregnant. It’s going to be incredibly difficult with my age and I had other health problems as well. And, so, I wanted to say, I want to be able to thank the Lord that I didn’t have a full hysterectomy, that there is a small possibility. And I also want to tell the gentleman from Australia, I think you called in, and you guys are having the same journey as we are. And it just touched my heart and where all in this together and I want to lift you up as well. And I’m praying for you all and I hope that the next time we call in that we can talk about us being pregnant. Love you guys.

This is Kacy from Oklahoma and I’m calling to ask for prayer for my dad. This is Sunday, the 12th of August and my dad goes in for facial reconstruction on Tuesday from skin melanoma and he is gonna have a rough time. And, so, I want to pray for him and I want to pray for my mom because she’s gonna be taking care of him a lot after __ the next week or so. And, so, I just want to pray for them. Lord, I just pray for my family, that we can get through this and, yeah, that’s what I’m calling for. So, I want to say a big thank you to Brian and Jill for making this community what it is and for bringing it out each and every day because it’s an awesome community. And, yeah, that is what I’m gonna…I’m gonna call in with an update after surgery. And, yeah, I’ll let you guys know what’s going on. And again, this is Kacy from Oklahoma. My dad’s name is Paul. So, keep him in your prayers and I will call back. Bye.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Wednesday August 15, 2018 (NIV)

Nehemiah 9:22-10:39

22 (A)“You let them conquer nations and kingdoms,
lands that bordered their own.
They conquered the land of Heshbon, where Sihon ruled,
and the land of Bashan, where Og was king.
23 (B)You gave them as many children as there are stars in the sky,
and let them conquer and live in the land
that you had promised their ancestors to give them.
24 (C)They conquered the land of Canaan;
you overcame the people living there.
You gave your people the power to do as they pleased
with the people and kings of Canaan.
25 (D)Your people captured fortified cities,
fertile land, houses full of wealth,
cisterns already dug,
olive trees, fruit trees, and vineyards.
They ate all they wanted and grew fat;
they enjoyed all the good things you gave them.

26 (E)“But your people rebelled and disobeyed you;
they turned their backs on your Law.
They killed the prophets who warned them,
who told them to turn back to you.
They insulted you time after time,
27 so you let their enemies conquer and rule them.
In their trouble they called to you for help,
and you answered them from heaven.
In your great mercy you sent them leaders
who rescued them from their foes.
28 When peace returned, they sinned again,
and again you let their enemies conquer them.
Yet when they repented and asked you to save them,
in heaven you heard, and time after time
you rescued them in your great mercy.
29 (F)You warned them to obey your teachings,
but in pride they rejected your laws,
although keeping your Law is the way to life.
Hard-headed and stubborn, they refused to obey.
30 (G)Year after year you patiently warned them.
You inspired your prophets to speak,
but your people were deaf,
so you let them be conquered by other nations.
31 And yet, because your mercy is great,
you did not forsake or destroy them.
You are a gracious and merciful God!

32 (H)“O God, our God, how great you are!
How terrifying, how powerful!
You faithfully keep your covenant promises.
From the time when Assyrian kings oppressed us,
even till now, how much we have suffered!
Our kings, our leaders, our priests and prophets,
our ancestors, and all our people have suffered.
Remember how much we have suffered!
33 You have done right to punish us;
you have been faithful, even though we have sinned.
34 Our ancestors, our kings, leaders, and priests
have not kept your Law.
They did not listen to your commands and warnings.
35 With your blessing, kings ruled your people
when they lived in the broad, fertile land you gave them;
but they failed to turn from sin and serve you.
36 And now we are slaves in the land that you gave us,
this fertile land which gives us food.
37 What the land produces goes to the kings
that you put over us because we sinned.
They do as they please with us and our livestock,
and we are in deep distress!”

The Agreement

28 We, the people of Israel, the priests, the Levites, the Temple guards, the Temple musicians, the Temple workers, and all others who in obedience to God's Law have separated themselves from the foreigners living in our land, we, together with our wives and all our children old enough to understand, 29 do hereby join with our leaders in an oath, under penalty of a curse if we break it, that we will live according to God's Law, which God gave through his servant Moses; that we will obey all that the Lord, our Lord, commands us; and that we will keep all his laws and requirements.

30 (I)We will not intermarry with the foreigners living in our land.

31 (J)If foreigners bring grain or anything else to sell to us on the Sabbath or on any other holy day, we will not buy from them.

Every seventh year we will not farm the land, and we will cancel all debts.

32 (K)Every year we will each contribute one-eighth of an ounce of silver to help pay the expenses of the Temple.

33 We will provide for the Temple worship the following: the sacred bread, the daily grain offering, the animals to be burned each day as sacrifices, the sacred offerings for Sabbaths, New Moon Festivals, and other festivals, the other sacred offerings, the offerings to take away the sins of Israel, and anything else needed for the Temple.

34 We, the people, priests, and Levites, will draw lots each year to determine which clans are to provide wood to burn the sacrifices offered to the Lord our God, according to the requirements of the Law.

35 (L)We will take to the Temple each year an offering of the first grain we harvest and of the first fruit that ripens on our trees.

36 (M)The first son born to each of us we will take to the priests in the Temple and there, as required by the Law, dedicate him to God. We will also dedicate the first calf born to each of our cows, and the first lamb or kid born to each of our sheep or goats.

37 (N)We will take to the priests in the Temple the dough made from the first grain harvested each year and our other offerings of wine, olive oil, and all kinds of fruit.

We will take to the Levites, who collect tithes in our farming villages, the tithes from the crops that grow on our land. 38 (O)Priests who are descended from Aaron are to be with the Levites when tithes are collected, and for use in the Temple the Levites are to take to the Temple storerooms one-tenth of all the tithes they collect. 39 The people of Israel and the Levites are to take the contributions of grain, wine, and olive oil to the storerooms where the utensils for the Temple are kept and where the priests who are on duty, the Temple guards, and the members of the Temple choir have their quarters.

We will not neglect the house of our God.

1 Corinthians 9:19-10:13

19 I am a free man, nobody's slave; but I make myself everybody's slave in order to win as many people as possible. 20 While working with the Jews, I live like a Jew in order to win them; and even though I myself am not subject to the Law of Moses, I live as though I were when working with those who are, in order to win them. 21 In the same way, when working with Gentiles, I live like a Gentile, outside the Jewish Law, in order to win Gentiles. This does not mean that I don't obey God's law; I am really under Christ's law. 22 Among the weak in faith I become weak like one of them, in order to win them. So I become all things to all people, that I may save some of them by whatever means are possible.

23 All this I do for the gospel's sake, in order to share in its blessings. 24 Surely you know that many runners take part in a race, but only one of them wins the prize. Run, then, in such a way as to win the prize. 25 (A)Every athlete in training submits to strict discipline, in order to be crowned with a wreath that will not last; but we do it for one that will last forever. 26 That is why I run straight for the finish line; that is why I am like a boxer who does not waste his punches. 27 I harden my body with blows and bring it under complete control, to keep myself from being disqualified after having called others to the contest.

Warnings against Idols

10 (B)I want you to remember, my friends, what happened to our ancestors who followed Moses. They were all under the protection of the cloud, and all passed safely through the Red Sea. In the cloud and in the sea they were all baptized as followers of Moses. (C)All ate the same spiritual bread (D)and drank the same spiritual drink. They drank from the spiritual rock that went with them; and that rock was Christ himself. (E)But even then God was not pleased with most of them, and so their dead bodies were scattered over the desert.

(F)Now, all of this is an example for us, to warn us not to desire evil things, as they did, (G)nor to worship idols, as some of them did. As the scripture says, “The people sat down to a feast which turned into an orgy of drinking and sex.” (H)We must not be guilty of sexual immorality, as some of them were—and in one day twenty-three thousand of them fell dead. (I)We must not put the Lord[a] to the test, as some of them did—and they were killed by snakes. 10 (J)We must not complain, as some of them did—and they were destroyed by the Angel of Death.

11 All these things happened to them as examples for others, and they were written down as a warning for us. For we live at a time when the end is about to come.

12 If you think you are standing firm you had better be careful that you do not fall. 13 (K)Every test that you have experienced is the kind that normally comes to people. But God keeps his promise, and he will not allow you to be tested beyond your power to remain firm; at the time you are put to the test, he will give you the strength to endure it, and so provide you with a way out.

Psalm 34:1-10

(A)In Praise of God's Goodness[a]

34 I will always thank the Lord;
I will never stop praising him.
I will praise him for what he has done;
may all who are oppressed listen and be glad!
Proclaim with me the Lord's greatness;
let us praise his name together!

I prayed to the Lord, and he answered me;
he freed me from all my fears.
The oppressed look to him and are glad;
they will never be disappointed.
The helpless call to him, and he answers;
he saves them from all their troubles.
His angel guards those who honor the Lord
and rescues them from danger.

(B)Find out for yourself how good the Lord is.
Happy are those who find safety with him.
Honor the Lord, all his people;
those who obey him have all they need.
10 Even lions go hungry for lack of food,
but those who obey the Lord lack nothing good.

Nehemiah 5:14-7:60 , 1 Corinthians 8:1-13 , Psalms 33:1-12 , Proverbs 21:8-10

Today is the 14th day of August. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian. It is great to be here with you today. I mean, what fun would this be if I had to be here by myself and we couldn’t be in this together, making the next step forward? So it’s great to be here with you today. And the next step forward will take us back into the book of Nehemiah and we’ll pick up where we left off yesterday. Nehemiah 7:73-9:21. We’re reading from the Good News Translation this week.

Commentary:

Okay. In our reading from 1 Corinthians today, Paul defended himself against people who were essentially claiming that Paul was exploiting people for his own advantage. And so in his own words and in his own defense he said, don’t I have the right to be given food and drink for my work? Don’t I have the right to follow the example of other apostles and the Lord’s brothers and Peter by taking a Christian wife with me on my trips? Or are Barnabas and I the only ones who have to work for our living? What soldiers ever have to pay their own expenses in the army? What farmers do not eat the grapes from their own vineyard? What shepherds do not use the milk from their own sheep? So, Paul is being accused of exploiting people. He’s defending himself that that is for sure not what he’s doing because he’s not taking anything. But at the same time he’s saying he should be able to. Everyone who works for God and cares for your souls should be able to. So, Paul’s explaining that those in spiritual service because of God’s call deserve to be able to support themselves through their hard work on behalf of others. But even though this was completely normal, Paul didn’t do that. He hadn’t exploited anyone for anything. The accusations against Paul were false. And they exasperated him as we can tell from his language. And he says as much. What’s my pay? It’s the chance to preach the good news without charging anyone. So, I don’t demand my rights when I preach the good news. So, we can be like, Yeah, yeah, yeah. Whatever. This doesn’t apply to me, but assumptions about spiritual and political and creative leaders are commonplace in our society. We feast on these people. But this is not a new invention. The Bible’s full of examples, right? Joseph faced false assumptions. So, did Moses. Many of the Psalms of David were written because of the assumptions made about him that were false, right? The story of Saul and David is full of false assumptions. The prophets regularly faced these false assumptions and accusations. Jesus faced them and now we see Paul dealing with them. The realities we are willing to invent about people that we have never even met or only know of through some kind of brief hello or sound bite, that’s not helpful. And it’s often devastating. Think of what it would be like to have your life story told through fragments of conversation taken out of context, filled in from different seasons of your life that don’t represent who you are anymore. I mean, it would be incomplete at best. And it can be terribly harmful to your heart. So, this whole passage that we’re reading from this letter, Paul is defending himself against false assumptions about himself. And we do this kind of stuff. So, let’s be vigilant in this area that we might follow the path of Jesus. And, I mean, I know that’s a cliche too. But when we watch Jesus navigating in the gospels, we don’t see Jesus making a bunch of assumptions about people. We see Jesus walking into a situation and assessing the situation and observing what is really going on. The story that is behind the story. The plot behind what seems to be going on. And if we’ll follow in that path, we’ll slow down and look and we’ll assume a lot less. We’ll make up a lot less about a lot of people. Which means we will better truly understand one another and we will better truly understand God.

Prayer:

And, so, Father, we bring this before You and we offer it to You. We offer the gaps that we fill in about people, the stories that we make up, whether spoken or unspoken, the assumptions that we are willing to leap to about people and their heart and their character and their motives. We want to see people as You see people. And we can. You live within us. We are told this over and over and over in the scriptures. And so we open ourselves to You. We want to see through Your eyes. Maybe they’re our eyes connected to the tissues of our body, but we want to see through Your eyes with Your heart. Come Holy Spirit we pray. In Jesus name we ask. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

I ask Lord that You will teach Lydia’s daughter that she is loved and her life is important, that she’s solving a temporary problem with a permanent solution Father God and You are God and You get decide when we die, not us Father. God I just ask that she would acknowledge You with that authority over her own life Lord and that she would trust You, trust You to love her, trust You to take care of her Father, that You would solve the pain that she has in her heart Father no matter where it is or what is coming from Lord. I ask that You would show up so big Lord and just lift her up in Your arms. In Jesus’ name I pray amen. Thank you so much Brian, Jill…

Hello everyone, this is my first time calling and my name is Kia. I like to be called Butterfly. I’m calling from South Florida out here in West Palm Beach. I have been out of work for a year and half. I have been saved for 21 years. I have a 21-year-old. And for the first time in my life I’ll be 40 in October. I was unemployed. I had to move in, basically, with my boyfriend, who is my ex-husband of almost 2 years. And I am asking that each of you pray for me for God to reestablish me and I feel His presence as I have come to recommit my life back to Him and walk in a more upright relationship with Him. I am praying that God just comes to restore my finances and give me ideas to create my design company. I want to design T-shirts and things of that nature and greeting cards and everything I can do in regards to print and graphics. I love each of you. I think that this DAB community is awesome. And again, this is my first time calling. I’ve been listening for maybe six months and Brian you are incredible. So, God bless everyone. And also my children. Pray for Enessia Martin, she’s 21. She has cerebral palsy. She goes to Valencia College and my twins, Cameron and Brea who live in Georgia this year until they come back next summer hoping that I am completely on my feet to take care of my children and pay my mortgage and my car payment and you know the whole spiel…but…

Hi. This is Sonja calling from Tampa and I’d like to pray for our children. There is so much going on. In the name of Jesus I bind low self-esteem, low self-worth, fear, anger, frustration, anxiety, laziness, nerves, disappointment, discouragement, paranoia, suicide, sexual perversion, witchcraft, peer pressure, depression, rejection, jealousy, envy, loneliness, worry, stress, alcohol, drugs, deception, __ , sickness, obesity, disease, and generation curses out of the lives of our children. I declare that our children are Spirit filled, anointed, that they walk in obedience and that they are led by the Holy Spirit. I declare that they are highly motivated with high self-esteem, compassionate, kind and gentle. I declare that they have the mind and wisdom of Christ and that shalom peace surrounds them, that joy that surpasses all understanding is with them, and that they prosper financially in every area of their life. I declare that they are focused, goal oriented, respected and loved by others. I declare that their footsteps are ordered by God and that they will have divine health and a long life. I declare that they are blessed with a Christian home, Christian partners, Christian children as they journey on an intimate walk with You. May they always trust You Lord and walk in obedience. This is my declaration for our DAB children. Amen.

Let’s pray family. Father God, we come before Your throne of grace and of mercy Lord. We just want to honor You and glorify You, give You all praise and glory Father. We pray Your kingdom come Lord into our lives today, into this prayer right now Lord. Father, we come, we beg, and we __ agreement with Angel from California who called in as she’s going in for exploratory surgery Lord. And like she proclaimed and like she said, we agree Father God that the surgeons will find nothing, that the doctors will find nothing, that Your hand and Your healing would have taken care of everything in the name of Jesus Christ. We also pray Lord that You would forgive us Lord for anything that might hinder Your work Lord. We offer forgiveness and we ask for forgiveness Father God. The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Tuesday August 14, 2018 (NIV)

Nehemiah 7:73-9:21

73 (A)The priests, the Levites, the Temple guards, the musicians, many of the ordinary people, the Temple workers—all the people of Israel—settled in the towns and cities of Judah.

Ezra Reads the Law to the People

By the seventh month the people of Israel were all settled in their towns. On the first day of that month they all assembled in Jerusalem, in the square just inside the Water Gate. They asked Ezra, the priest and scholar of the Law which the Lord had given Israel through Moses, to get the book of the Law. So Ezra brought it to the place where the people had gathered—men, women, and the children who were old enough to understand. There in the square by the gate he read the Law to them from dawn until noon, and they all listened attentively.

Ezra was standing on a wooden platform that had been built for the occasion. The following men stood at his right: Mattithiah, Shema, Anaiah, Uriah, Hilkiah, and Maaseiah; and the following stood at his left: Pedaiah, Mishael, Malchijah, Hashum, Hashbaddanah, Zechariah, and Meshullam.

As Ezra stood there on the platform high above the people, they all kept their eyes fixed on him. As soon as he opened the book, they all stood up. Ezra said, “Praise the Lord, the great God!”

All the people raised their arms in the air and answered, “Amen! Amen!” They knelt in worship, with their faces to the ground.

Then they rose and stood in their places, and the following Levites explained the Law to them: Jeshua, Bani, Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodiah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, and Pelaiah. They gave an oral translation[a] of God's Law and explained[b] it so that the people could understand it.

When the people heard what the Law required, they were so moved that they began to cry. So Nehemiah, who was the governor, Ezra, the priest and scholar of the Law, and the Levites who were explaining the Law told all the people, “This day is holy to the Lord your God, so you are not to mourn or cry. 10 Now go home and have a feast. Share your food and wine with those who don't have enough. Today is holy to our Lord, so don't be sad. The joy that the Lord gives you will make you strong.”

11 The Levites went around calming the people and telling them not to be sad on such a holy day. 12 So all the people went home and ate and drank joyfully and shared what they had with others, because they understood what had been read to them.

The Festival of Shelters

13 The next day the heads of the clans, together with the priests and the Levites, went to Ezra to study the teachings of the Law. 14 (B)They discovered that the Law, which the Lord gave through Moses, ordered the people of Israel to live in temporary shelters during the Festival of Shelters. 15 So they gave the following instructions and sent them[c] all through Jerusalem and the other cities and towns: “Go out to the hills and get branches from pines, olives, myrtles, palms, and other trees to make shelters according to the instructions written in the Law.”

16 So the people got branches and built shelters on the flat roofs of their houses, in their yards, in the Temple courtyard, and in the public squares by the Water Gate and by the Ephraim Gate. 17 All the people who had come back from captivity built shelters and lived in them. This was the first time it had been done since the days of Joshua son of Nun, and everybody was excited and happy. 18 From the first day of the festival to the last they read a part of God's Law every day. They celebrated for seven days, and on the eighth day there was a closing ceremony, as required in the Law.

The People Confess Their Sins

1-2 On the twenty-fourth day of the same month the people of Israel gathered to fast in order to show sorrow for their sins. They had already separated themselves from all foreigners. They wore sackcloth and put dust on their heads as signs of grief. Then they stood and began to confess the sins that they and their ancestors had committed. For about three hours the Law of the Lord their God was read to them, and for the next three hours they confessed their sins and worshiped the Lord their God.

There was a platform for the Levites, and on it stood Jeshua, Bani, Kadmiel, Shebaniah, Bunni, Sherebiah, Bani, and Chenani. They prayed aloud to the Lord their God.

The following Levites gave a call to worship: Jeshua, Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabneiah, Sherebiah, Hodiah, Shebaniah, and Pethahiah. They said:

“Stand up and praise the Lord your God;
praise him forever and ever!
Let everyone praise his glorious name,
although no human praise is great enough.”

The Prayer of Confession

And then the people of Israel prayed this prayer:

“You, Lord, you alone are Lord;
you made the heavens and the stars of the sky.
You made land and sea and everything in them;
you gave life to all.
The heavenly powers bow down and worship you.
(C)You, Lord God, chose Abram
and led him out of Ur in Babylonia;
you changed his name to Abraham.
(D)You found that he was faithful to you,
and you made a covenant with him.
You promised to give him the land of the Canaanites,
the land of the Hittites and the Amorites,
the land of the Perizzites, the Jebusites, the Girgashites,
to be a land where his descendants would live.
You kept your promise, because you are faithful.

(E)“You saw how our ancestors suffered in Egypt;
you heard their call for help at the Red Sea.
10 (F)You worked amazing miracles against the king,
against his officials and the people of his land,
because you knew how they oppressed your people.
You won then the fame you still have today.
11 (G)Through the sea you made a path for your people
and led them through on dry ground.
Those who pursued them drowned in deep water,
as a stone sinks in the raging sea.
12 (H)With a cloud you led them in daytime,
and at night you lighted their way with fire.
13 (I)At Mount Sinai you came down from heaven;
you spoke to your people
and gave them good laws and sound teachings.
14 You taught them to keep your Sabbaths holy,
and through your servant Moses you gave them your laws.

15 (J)“When they were hungry, you gave them bread from heaven,
and water from a rock when they were thirsty.
You told them to take control of the land
which you had promised to give them.
16 (K)But our ancestors grew proud and stubborn
and refused to obey your commands.
17 (L)They refused to obey; they forgot all you did;
they forgot the miracles you had performed.
In their pride they chose a leader
to take them back to slavery in Egypt.
But you are a God who forgives;
you are gracious and loving, slow to be angry.
Your mercy is great; you did not forsake them.
18 (M)They made an idol in the shape of a bull-calf
and said it was the god who led them from Egypt!
How much they insulted you, Lord!
19 (N)But you did not abandon them there in the desert,
for your mercy is great.
You did not take away the cloud or the fire
that showed them the path by day and night.
20 In your goodness you told them what they should do;
you fed them manna and gave them water to drink.
21 Through forty years in the desert
you provided all that they needed;
their clothing never wore out,
and their feet were not swollen with pain.

1 Corinthians 9:1-18

Rights and Duties of an Apostle

Am I not a free man? Am I not an apostle? Haven't I seen Jesus our Lord? And aren't you the result of my work for the Lord? Even if others do not accept me as an apostle, surely you do! Because of your life in union with the Lord you yourselves are proof of the fact that I am an apostle.

When people criticize me, this is how I defend myself: Don't I have the right to be given food and drink for my work? Don't I have the right to follow the example of the other apostles and the Lord's brothers and Peter, by taking a Christian wife with me on my trips? Or are Barnabas and I the only ones who have to work for our living? What soldiers ever have to pay their own expenses in the army? What farmers do not eat the grapes from their own vineyard? What shepherds do not use the milk from their own sheep?

I don't have to limit myself to these everyday examples, because the Law says the same thing. (A)We read in the Law of Moses, “Do not muzzle an ox when you are using it to thresh grain.” Now, is God concerned about oxen? 10 Didn't he really mean us when he said that? Of course that was written for us. Anyone who plows and anyone who reaps should do their work in the hope of getting a share of the crop. 11 (B)We have sown spiritual seed among you. Is it too much if we reap material benefits from you? 12 If others have the right to expect this from you, don't we have an even greater right?

But we haven't made use of this right. Instead, we have endured everything in order not to put any obstacle in the way of the Good News about Christ. 13 (C)Surely you know that the men who work in the Temple get their food from the Temple and that those who offer the sacrifices on the altar get a share of the sacrifices. 14 (D)In the same way, the Lord has ordered that those who preach the gospel should get their living from it.

15 But I haven't made use of any of these rights, nor am I writing this now in order to claim such rights for myself. I would rather die first! Nobody is going to turn my rightful boast into empty words! 16 I have no right to boast just because I preach the gospel. After all, I am under orders to do so. And how terrible it would be for me if I did not preach the gospel! 17 If I did my work as a matter of free choice, then I could expect to be paid; but I do it as a matter of duty, because God has entrusted me with this task. 18 What pay do I get, then? It is the privilege of preaching the Good News without charging for it, without claiming my rights in my work for the gospel.

Psalm 33:12-22

12 Happy is the nation whose God is the Lord;
happy are the people he has chosen for his own!

13 The Lord looks down from heaven
and sees all of us humans.
14 From where he rules, he looks down
on all who live on earth.
15 He forms all their thoughts
and knows everything they do.

16 (A)A king does not win because of his powerful army;
a soldier does not triumph because of his strength.
17 War horses are useless for victory;
their great strength cannot save.

18 The Lord watches over those who obey him,
those who trust in his constant love.
19 He saves them from death;
he keeps them alive in times of famine.

20 We put our hope in the Lord;
he is our protector and our help.
21 We are glad because of him;
we trust in his holy name.

22 May your constant love be with us, Lord,
as we put our hope in you.

Today is the 13th day of August. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian. And it’s great to be here with you today as we move into our work week and beyond because this rhythm, this rhythm never stops. We continue to let God’s Word speak to us every day. So we’ll take the next step forward by picking up where we left off yesterday. And we’re in the book of Nehemiah. And we’re reading from the Good News Translation this week. Nehemiah 5:14-7:73 today.

Commentary:

Okay. So as we continue to watch Nehemiah’s efforts as the wall of Jerusalem is rebuilt, we might notice that things don’t get easier. They don’t reach this point where it’s easier. I mean, the challenge is only escalated the closer they got to completion. And maybe this will be a word of encouragement for we who have been, kind of, pushing through in our own mission. We’re not the only ones who face opposition. But we got a pretty clear glimpse of Nehemiah’s motives today. Like what kept him going in the face of all this opposition. Because he told how he had not taken the allotted resources given his position, even though his predecessors had. And there was nothing wrong with benefiting from what he’d earned. He saw the burden the people were under and he choose to lighten the load rather than increase it because they were facing the same opposition. And so he paid out of his own pocket what he required for his position. And this served to show those who were working under him that he was in the struggle too. And this didn’t only set an example. It revealed that Nehemiah wasn’t looking for an opportunity to exploit anyone. Like he was not in this for the victory and for the adulation and for what it was going to bring to him. He was single minded in his mission. He wanted to build a wall so that God’s temple was protected. And he would accept nothing more and he would accept nothing less. So this might seem like an odd thing to draw attention to, but we have to remember that rebuilding Jerusalem would have been a ground floor opportunity for acquiring prime real estate. And Nehemiah was in a position to get wealth and property. But the allure didn’t distract him. He wholeheartedly believed that his mission was from God. And then Nehemiah faced the politics of the situation, right? When the threats and taunts and ridicule were unsuccessful, his foes invited him to a summit with the idea that everyone should just get on the same page. And so several letters were sent until this open letter was sent. And what was Nehemiah’s response. Why should I stop working to come and meet with you? That’s a fair question. And it should resonate with us when we’re facing our own obstacles as we press through in our own callings. Why should we stop progress only to listen to the very voices that try to diminish and intimidate us in the first place? And of course, this meeting, this summit Nehemiah was invited to wasn’t really to talk things out. It was dirty politics to say the least. But rather than cowering to their coercion, Nehemiah decided to simply work all the harder to get the mission accomplished. And so that didn’t work either. So what are these people gonna do to get Nehemiah’s attention and get him to stop what he’s doing? And they bring religion into the mix. They pay off a prophet to coerce Nehemiah to blockade himself in God’s temple, which would have made Nehemiah look fearful and weak and as if he had done something wrong, which he didn’t do. So Nehemiah’s single focused commitment to his passionate desire to protect God’s temple, gave him the guidance that he was gonna need to navigate and gave him the strength to oppose the formidable opposition coming against him from everywhere. So the bottom line is if Nehemiah was in this for the money, like if he were in this to exploit and get something, he would have led completely differently. He wouldn’t have been providing for the people. He wouldn’t have been working along with the people. And with all the opposition they were facing, the wall probably would have remained incomplete. But 52 days later, Nehemiah reflected on what he’d faced. And he said, when our enemies and the surrounding nations heard about it, they were frightened and humiliated because they realized that the work was done with the help of God. When this story… You know, it’s so easy to look into our own lives. It’s not veiled at all. We don’t have to stretch at all to find ourselves in this story. We can find the places where we’ve quit because of opposition or because of taunting or because of religion or whatever. When we’ve quit what we felt like we were supposed to do because it was too hard. And it gives us an opportunity to reflect on our motives. This is what we see in the reading today from Nehemiah. His motives are all clear. He would not have led the way that he did had he had different motives. And so we can check our own hearts as we continue this journey forward.

Prayer:

Father, we invite You into that, our motives. Why do we do what we do? Why are we driven to do the things that we do? Often we feel Your call and we step into that and we face the same kind of opposition Nehemiah was facing. And we abandon ship, which reveals some of the motives behind the motives and it shows us what’s really going on in our hearts. And so we invite You into this, Father, because our motives, why we do what we do, matters greatly. And we want to do what we do because of our profound respect and honor for You, because of our deep and abiding love for You and our desire to be about the business of Your will and Your ways on this earth. Come Holy Spirit into this, we pray. In Jesus name. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Morning Daily Audio Bible family. This is Tawana from California, Los Angeles California as a matter of fact. Brian, I just want to say I love you, I love you, I love you, I love you and Jill and thank you. I’ve said it since 2007. I still listen. I don’t call in as much as I used to but I still listen and pray. But, today, August the 9th, you read first Corinthians 5 chapter 1 through 13…and my God. I decided today to read with you. And, so, when I read, this became so much __ of word not even realizing the attack that is on people who lives a immoral lives. But when you do that you come in contact with it. It’s a spiritual matter. And, so, God, my God, thank you God for allowing yourself to read this because this was just really…really refreshing to read from a spiritual aspect. And my God, all of you who are struggling with pornography and all the sins of the flesh, the Lord said our flesh is dead. And, so, because our flesh is dead we need to act like our flesh is dead, it’s dead to sin. The members cannot sin if you…if you…if you don’t allow them to. You have to put that flesh under subjection. You have to do it daily and that means that when you are delivered, that you do not go back in those dry places nor the people that is among you that is doing the same thing. Family, agree that that pornography in the name of Jesus will be destroyed by the…

Hey y’all. My name is Amanda. I’m from Williamsburg Virginia and I just wanted to call and ask for prayer for a local family. There is a family, the Ashton family. They’re a wonderful Christian family but yesterday the father got in this truck and backed up and didn’t realize that he accidentally hit his five-year-old son and it ended in the death of his five-year-old son and I don’t even know what to ask to pray for and I think the whole community is just heartbroken and grieving. And, so, please, please I know we pray worldwide for each other and I just ask to lift up this family, the Ashton family as they’re just beyond words, beyond complete devastation…and just…this sweet little five-year-old boy has lost his life just by shear accident. I thank you. Thank you guys so much. You’re always just so wonderful. Bye.

Hi this is Dawn from Indiana calling Morla from Albuquerque. Morla you left a message a few days ago about wanting to cut yourself and some of the desires that you are having and some of the struggles that you’re having and I wanted to pray for you. Father God, I just lift up Morla and I ask that You help her to restrain herself and to not cut and to not herself anymore. Help her to know that and believe in her heart that she is Your child and a precious, precious child she is. God, she is more than a conqueror in You and she is loved and she is forgiven. There is no need for her to hurt herself to inflict pain upon herself because You have taken her sins and taken her pain and taken her stress upon Yourself Lord. I just ask for a measure of wisdom and peace in her mind and in her heart. And Lord, if she has cut, help her to know that thanks to You and the Son who died for us, all we have to do is take the next correct step forward in our walk with You. That You forgive us, that You love us, that You hold us up and You treasure us. Father God, again, I lift Morla up and I thank You so much for this Daily Audio Bible community. Amen.
