Job 4-7

Eliphaz’s First Speech

Please Be Patient and Listen

Eliphaz from Teman[a] said:

Please be patient and listen
to what I have to say.
Remember how your words
have guided and encouraged
many in need.
But now you feel discouraged
when struck by trouble.
You respect God and live right,
so don’t lose hope!
No truly innocent person
has ever died young.
In my experience, only those
who plant seeds of evil
harvest trouble,
and then they are swept away
by the angry breath of God.
10 They may roar and growl
like powerful lions.
But when God breaks their teeth,
11 they starve,
and their children
are scattered.

A Secret Was Told to Me

12 A secret was told to me
in a faint whisper—
13 I was overcome by sleep,
but disturbed by dreams;
14 I trembled with fear,
15 and my hair stood on end,
as a wind blew past my face.
16 It stopped and stood still.
Then a form appeared—
a shapeless form.
And from the silence,
I heard a voice say,
17 “No humans are innocent
in the eyes of God
their Creator.
18 He finds fault with his servants
and even with his angels.
19 Humans are formed from clay
and are fragile as moths,
so what chance do you have?
20 Born after daybreak,
you die before nightfall
and disappear forever.
21 Your tent pegs are pulled up,
and you leave this life,
having gained no wisdom.”

Eliphaz Continues

Call Out for Help

Job, call out for help
and see if an angel comes!

Envy and jealousy
will kill a stupid fool.
I have seen fools take root.
But God sends a curse,
suddenly uprooting them
and leaving their children
helpless in court.
Then hungry and greedy people
gobble down their crops
and grab up their wealth.[b]
Our suffering isn’t caused
by the failure of crops;
it’s all part of life,
like sparks shooting skyward.

Job, if I were you,
I would ask God for help.
His miracles are marvelous,
more than we can count.
10 God sends showers on earth
and waters the fields.
11 He protects the sorrowful
and lifts up those
who have been disgraced.
12 God swiftly traps the wicked
13 in their own evil schemes,
and their wisdom fails.
14 Darkness is their only companion,
hiding their path at noon.
15 God rescues the needy
from the words of the wicked
and the fist of the mighty.
16 The poor are filled with hope,
and injustice is silenced.

Consider Yourself Fortunate

17 Consider yourself fortunate
if God All-Powerful
chooses to correct you.
18 He may cause injury and pain,
but he will bandage and heal
your cuts and bruises.
19 God will protect you from harm,
no matter how often
trouble may strike.

20 In times of war and famine,
God will keep you safe.
21 You will be sheltered,
without fear of hurtful words
or any other weapon.
22 You will laugh at the threat
of destruction and famine.
And you won’t be afraid
of wild animals—
23 they will no longer be fierce,
and your rocky fields
will become friendly.
24 Your home will be secure,
and your sheep will be safe.
25 You will have more descendants
than there are blades of grass
on the face of the earth.
26 You will live a long life,
and your body will be strong
until the day you die.
27 Our experience has proven
these things to be true,
so listen and learn.

Job’s Reply to Eliphaz

It’s Impossible

Job said:

It’s impossible to weigh
my misery and grief!
They outweigh the sand
along the beach,
and that’s why I have spoken
without thinking first.
The fearsome arrows
of God All-Powerful
have filled my soul
with their poison.
Do oxen and wild donkeys
cry out in distress
unless they are hungry?
What is food without salt?
What is more tasteless
than the white of an egg?[c]
That’s how my food tastes,
and my appetite is gone.

How I wish that God
would answer my prayer
and do away with me.
10 Then I would be comforted,
knowing that in all of my pain
I have never disobeyed God.
11 Why should I patiently hope
when my strength is gone?
12 I am not strong as stone
or bronze,
13 and I have finally reached
the end of my rope.

My Friends, I Am Desperate

14 My friends, I am desperate,
and you should help me,
even if I no longer respect
God All-Powerful.[d]
15 But you are treacherous
16 as streams that swell
with melting snow,
17 then suddenly disappear
in the summer heat.
18 I am like a caravan,
lost in the desert
while searching for water.
19 Caravans from Tema and Sheba[e]
20 thought they would find water.
But they were disappointed,
21 just as I am with you.[f]
Only one look at my suffering,
and you run away scared.

What Have I Done Wrong?

22 Have I ever asked any of you
to give me a gift
23 or to purchase my freedom
from brutal enemies?
24 What have I done wrong?
Show me,
and I will keep quiet.
25 The truth is always painful,
but your arguments
prove nothing.
26 Here I am desperate,
and you consider my words
as worthless as wind.
27 Why, you would sell an orphan
or your own neighbor!
28 Look me straight in the eye;
I won’t lie to you.
29 Stop accusing me falsely;
my reputation is at stake.
30 I know right from wrong,
and I am not telling lies.

Job Continues

Why Is Life So Hard?

Why is life so hard?
Why do we suffer?
We are slaves in search of shade;
we are laborers longing
for our wages.
God has made my days drag on
and my nights miserable.
I pray for night to end,
but it stretches out
while I toss and turn.
My parched skin is covered
with worms, dirt, and sores,
and my days are running out
quicker than the thread
of a fast-moving needle.

Don’t Forget!

I beg you, God, don’t forget!
My life is just a breath,
and trouble lies ahead.
I will vanish from sight,
and no one, including you,
will ever see me again.
I will disappear in the grave
or vanish from sight
like a passing cloud.
10 Never will I return home;
soon I will be forgotten.

11 And so, I cry out to you
in agony and distress.
12 Am I the sea or a sea monster?
Is that why you imprison me?[g]
13 I go to bed, hoping for rest,
14 but you torture me
with terrible dreams.
15 I’d rather choke to death
than live in this body.
16 Leave me alone and let me die;
my life has no meaning.
17 What makes you so concerned
about us humans?
18 Why do you test us
from sunrise to sunset?
19 Won’t you look away
just long enough
for me to swallow?
20 Why do you watch us so closely?
What’s it to you, if I sin?
Why am I your target
and such a heavy burden?
21 Why do you refuse to forgive?
Soon you won’t find me,
because I’ll be dead.

1 Corinthians 14:18-40

18 I thank God that I speak unknown languages more than any of you. 19 But words that make sense can help the church. That’s why in church I had rather speak five words that make sense than to speak ten thousand words in a language that others don’t know.

20 My friends, stop thinking like children. Think like mature people and be as innocent as tiny babies. 21 In the Scriptures the Lord says,

“I will use strangers
who speak unknown languages
to talk to my people.
They will speak to them
in foreign languages,
but still my people
won’t listen to me.”

22 Languages that others don’t know may mean something to unbelievers, but not to the Lord’s followers. Prophecy, on the other hand, is for followers, not for unbelievers. 23 Suppose everyone in your worship service started speaking unknown languages, and some outsiders or some unbelievers come in. Won’t they think you are crazy? 24 But suppose all of you are prophesying when those unbelievers and outsiders come in. They will realize that they are sinners, and they will want to change their ways because of what you are saying. 25 They will tell what is hidden in their hearts. Then they will kneel down and say to God, “We are certain that you are with these people.”

Worship Must Be Orderly

26 My friends, when you meet to worship, you must do everything for the good of everyone there. That’s how it should be when someone sings or teaches or tells what God has said or speaks an unknown language or explains what the language means. 27 No more than two or three of you should speak unknown languages during the meeting. You must take turns, and someone should always be there to explain what you mean. 28 If no one can explain, you must keep silent in church and speak only to yourself and to God.

29 Two or three persons may prophesy, and everyone else must listen carefully. 30 If someone sitting there receives a message from God, the speaker must stop and let the other person speak. 31 Let only one person speak at a time, then all of you will learn something and be encouraged. 32 A prophet should be willing to stop and let someone else speak. 33 God wants everything to be done peacefully and in order.

When God’s people meet in church, 34 the women must not be allowed to speak. They must keep quiet and listen, as the Law of Moses teaches. 35 If there is something they want to know, they can ask their husbands when they get home. It is disgraceful for women to speak in church. 36 God’s message did not start with you people, and you are not the only ones it has reached.

37 If you think of yourself as a prophet or a spiritual person, you will know that I am writing only what the Lord has commanded. 38 So don’t pay attention to anyone who ignores what I am writing. 39 My friends, be eager to prophesy and don’t stop anyone from speaking languages that others don’t know. 40 But do everything properly and in order.

Psalm 37:30-40

30 Words of wisdom come
when good people speak
for justice.
31 They remember God’s teachings,
and they never take
a wrong step.

32 The wicked try to trap
and kill good people,
33 but the Lord is on their side,
and he will defend them
when they are on trial.

34 Trust the Lord and follow him.
He will give you the land,
and you will see
the wicked destroyed.

35 I have seen brutal people
abuse others
and grow strong
like trees in rich soil.[a]
36 Suddenly they disappeared!
I looked, but they were gone
and no longer there.

37 Think of the bright future
waiting
for all the families
of honest
and innocent
and peace-loving people.
38 But not a trace will be left
of the wicked
or their families.

39 The Lord protects his people,
and they can come to him
in times of trouble.
40 The Lord helps them
and saves them from the wicked
because they run to him.

Today is the 21st day of August. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian and it’s a pleasure and an honor to be here with you today as we continue forward into this week. And we concluded the book of Esther yesterday and we talked about. Today we’re moving into some new territory.

Introduction to the book of Job:

For the next little season here were going to be exploring the deeper recesses of our hearts and we’ll be looking at it through the lens of suffering and of meaning and purpose. And, so, that brings us to the threshold of the book that we’re about to step into, the book of Job, which poetically deals with the problem of evil and human suffering and just begs the question, why? Why me? And then rustling for that answer. Funny thing about Job is its origins are disputed because it's…just…there’s like no historical context in the Bible. There’s no historical figures. I mean there are people in the Bible, obviously, but none of them can be cross-referenced and located in history, which leads to a lot of conjecture. In spite of this, it’s widely accepted that Job may very well be one of the most ancient books in the world and perhaps the most ancient book in the Bible. But even Jewish tradition has varied opinions. Some scholars believe that because of the archaic Hebrew used in the original manuscripts and the uniqueness of words found in the book - Job uses a lot of Hebrew words not found anywhere else in the Bible - that Job was maybe contemporary with Abraham, or Jacob. Others believe that it was written by a scribe returning from exile whose native tongue wasn’t Hebrew. And others follow tradition that Job was written or collected by Mosses, so there’s conjecture around this. And if it was written by Moses, it’s unknown whether he was writing down oral traditions that had been passed down for…for who knows how long or weather he was writing a bit of a theological treatise dealing with suffering and pain as a parable. These are only a few of the many varying explanations for Job’s existence. But regardless, it’s beautiful. It’s a beautifully written work and it’s among the most riveting literature in all the world to help us deal with suffering. So, as we move through the book of Job we’ll deal with these questions, the  questions of unwarranted suffering and the council of friends who are attempting to help Job find the answer. Often what we’re going to find is that Job’s friends giving advice sound very, very similar to the kind of advice we might give and totally valid, only to find out that they didn’t know at all what they were talking. And we’ll discover that as we demand answers for our suffering or our hardship or our struggles and then…and then we contrast that with the glory of God. And we become speechless because God’s glory is infinite and far beyond whatever we might be going through at the moment. His power and his strength are so vast that their unknowable, right? They can’t be quantified. It's…it’s beyond our comprehension. His beauty is indescribable. It is God and only God who can sustain our lives, but often when were we’re suffering were asking why, are you letting this happen. And there’s not always this immediate answer that we’re looking for, no matter how much we stamp our feet and shake our fists and make demands. And the more that we demand, the more you become aware that we’re putting ourselves, we’re elevating ourselves into a position of highest judge, even to the point of making a judgment against God, which is a scary thing indeed. So, ultimately we can spend our lives looking for an answer or we can trust God. And this may sound like it’s trite but it’s bedrock. All of our lives boil down to this core awareness. Our very existence itself boils down to this awareness. There are always parts of our story that are incomplete. There’s always more going on than we ever know, but our suffering, our hardship, our struggle is a continual invitation to leave behind our knowledge of good and evil and fall helplessly and hopelessly into God. I mean the struggles that we face are continually inviting us to answer one simple question, is God good or not. And we can answer, of course, yes, then even in the face of hardship we know we’re on the right path. And, so, with that, let’s dive in to this new season, and this new book. Job chapter 1 verse 1 through 3 verse 26. And we’re reading from the Contemporary English Version this week.

Commentary:

Okay. So, we’ve worked our way through three chapters of Job, and…I men…this is one of the most riveting points in the Bible to me. Every year we pass this territory, it’s the same thing for me…this…this image of how a man systematically lost everything that he cherished. I mean to the point that all of his joy, all of the hope that he had was crushed to the point that he wanted to be lying in the grave. And, I mean, we can we can see why. Everything, everything that he had that mattered was taken away. The thing that is most riveting about that, the posture that is portrayed here is…it is just riveting to me because it’s usually not what we do, right? If we have a season like Job and, come on, let’s be honest, none of us have had a season like Job. We may that we’re suffering like Job, but we just read what happened to Job. So…so as not to make a blanket statement, let me just say that it’s unlikely that any of us have suffered like Job, probably none of us have had a bad day like the one Job had when servants couldn’t finish what they were saying and what they were saying was destruction of one of the aspects of Job’s life, they couldn’t finish even saying it before the next one came up with more bad news. Job’s response should silence and humble us because so often, you know, if we were to encounter say 1%, 2% of what Job is facing, we’re shaken our fists at the sky. Job’s response is certainly to acknowledge what he’s going through, right? As was the custom, he tore his clothes to show that something is torn inside of him and he put sackcloth on and he sat in ashes and put ashes on himself. He’s clearly demonstrating and acknowledging the pain and suffering. But what he did was he fell to his knees and worshiped God. It’s such a vivid picture and such a contrast with the way that we deal with these kinds of things, usually. Job’s posture is just different than that, right? He’s not saying all kinds of affirmations and, you know, trying to find mantras that he can repeat to keep his courage up…like he’s acknowledging completely what is going on. It’s just that he’s responding to it differently than most people do. He fell to his knees and began to worship God. I mean there’s thousands of us going through thousands of different things, tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands. Like, every one of us have a story to tell and at one point or another we’re going through patches that we don’t want to be going through, we’re walking through things that we’d rather not be, we’re suffering in ways that would rather not be. If we could remember this picture, though it would orient us correctly. As we’ll see, this isn’t going to take everything away just because Job fell to his knees and worshiped God. But the posture of heart is clear. No matter what happens, Job has committed himself to trusting in the sovereign God and in Him alone. And as this develops in the story it will be even more riveting.

Prayer:

Father, we come into Your presence, first confessing that…I mean…this…this is normally not our posture. I mean…we might worship and praise You…hoping that You’ll make things better…quickly…as soon as possible, but…but we haven’t faced with Job has faced and he fell to his knees and worshiped You. And this humbles us. And, so, we worship You, to begin with today. Lord, we worship You. You are the sovereign God. The fact that we are breathing oxygen. The fact that we have a consciousness and are even aware that we exist is a gift from You. We have nothing and we are nothing without You. And, so, we are reminded today as we look into the book of Job that are hope is in You and You alone. Everything else that we put our hope in, all of our own ingenuity and strength, this isn’t gonna work. It’s going to turn out to be false hope. And, so we put our hope in You alone and we confess that You are good. And Father, we confess this in the face of what we are dealing with right now and in this community it runs the gamut of everything a person can face. So, inside this community, as a collective, we have endured with Job is enduring, just not as individuals, but we are all facing something. And, so, we fall to our knees and worship You. You are good. Blessed be the name of the Lord. And we invite Your Holy Spirit to draw near and comfort us in this. We turn to You. Rather than being estranged from You and pushing You away and being angry, we run toward You and fall before You and receive Your comfort. Come Holy Spirit, we pray. Blessed to be the name of the Lord. Amen.

Song:

Brent Bourgeois - Blessed Be the Name (from Job)

May the day perish on which I was born.

May the stars of its morning be dim.

Why is life given to the bitter of soul

Or to those who stand in anger of Him?

Oh, He pierces my heart and does not pity.

He breaks me with wound upon wound.

Remember, I pray that you have made me like clay

And you’ll return me to dust again soon.

Oh-oh, Naked I came from my mother’s womb,

And naked I shall return.

Oh, the Lord gave, the Lord has taken away.

Blessed be the name of the Lord.

Blessed be the name of the Lord.

He commands the sun and it does not rise,

And treads on the waves of the sea.

Yet, how small a whisper we hear of Him

For He is not a man, is He?

That my words were written forever

With pen and golden rod,

My redeemer shall stand at last on the earth.

In my flesh, I shall see God.

Oh-oh, Naked I came from my mother’s womb,

And naked I shall return.

Oh, the Lord gave, the Lord has taken away.

Blessed be the name of the Lord.

Blessed be the name of the Lord.

But now ask the beasts and they will tell you,

And the birds of the air and they will teach you,

Or the fish of the sea will explain it to you,

That the hand of the Lord has done this

In whose hand is the life of every living thing

And the flesh of all mankind.

Oh-oh, Naked I came from my mother’s womb,

And naked I shall return.

Oh, the Lord gave, the Lord has taken away.

Blessed be the name of the Lord.

Oh-oh, Naked I came from my mother’s womb,

And naked I shall return.

Oh, the Lord gave, the Lord has taken away.

Blessed be the name of the Lord.

Blessed be the name of the Lord.

Job 1-3

Job and His Family

Many years ago, a man named Job lived in the land of Uz.[a] He was a truly good person, who respected God and refused to do evil.

Job had seven sons and three daughters. He owned seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred pair of oxen, five hundred donkeys, and a large number of servants. He was the richest person in the East.

Job’s sons took turns having feasts in their homes, and they always invited their three sisters to join in the eating and drinking. After each feast, Job would send for his children and perform a ceremony, as a way of asking God to forgive them of any wrongs they may have done. He would get up early the next morning and offer a sacrifice for each of them, just in case they had sinned or silently cursed God.

Angels, the Lord, and Satan

One day, when the angels[b] had gathered around the Lord, and Satan[c] was there with them, the Lord asked, “Satan, where have you been?”

Satan replied, “I have been going all over the earth.”

Then the Lord asked, “What do you think of my servant Job? No one on earth is like him—he is a truly good person, who respects me and refuses to do evil.”

“Why shouldn’t he respect you?” Satan remarked. 10 “You are like a wall protecting not only him, but his entire family and all his property. You make him successful in whatever he does, and his flocks and herds are everywhere. 11 Try taking away everything he owns, and he will curse you to your face.”

12 The Lord replied, “All right, Satan, do what you want with anything that belongs to him, but don’t harm Job.”

Then Satan left.

Job Loses Everything

13 Job’s sons and daughters were having a feast in the home of his oldest son, 14 when someone rushed up to Job and said, “While your servants were plowing with your oxen, and your donkeys were nearby eating grass, 15 a gang of Sabeans[d] attacked and stole the oxen and donkeys! Your other servants were killed, and I was the only one who escaped to tell you.”

16 That servant was still speaking, when a second one came running up and saying, “God sent down a fire that killed your sheep and your servants. I am the only one who escaped to tell you.”

17 Before that servant finished speaking, a third one raced up and said, “Three gangs of Chaldeans[e] attacked and stole your camels! All of your other servants were killed, and I am the only one who escaped to tell you.”

18 That servant was still speaking, when a fourth one dashed up and said, “Your children were having a feast and drinking wine at the home of your oldest son, 19 when suddenly a windstorm from the desert blew the house down, crushing all of your children. I am the only one who escaped to tell you.”

20 When Job heard this, he tore his clothes and shaved his head because of his great sorrow. He knelt on the ground, then worshiped God 21 and said:

“We bring nothing at birth;
we take nothing
with us at death.
The Lord alone gives and takes.
Praise the name of the Lord!”

22 In spite of everything, Job did not sin or accuse God of doing wrong.

Job Loses His Health

When the angels[f] gathered around the Lord again, Satan[g] was there with them, and the Lord asked, “Satan, where have you been?”

Satan replied, “I have been going all over the earth.”

Then the Lord asked, “What do you think of my servant Job? No one on earth is like him—he is a truly good person, who respects me and refuses to do evil. And he hasn’t changed, even though you persuaded me to destroy him for no reason.”

Satan answered, “There’s no pain like your own.[h] People will do anything to stay alive. Try striking Job’s own body with pain, and he will curse you to your face.”

“All right!” the Lord replied. “Make Job suffer as much as you want, but just don’t kill him.” Satan left and caused painful sores to break out all over Job’s body—from head to toe.

Then Job sat on the ash-heap to show his sorrow. And while he was scraping his sores with a broken piece of pottery, his wife asked, “Why do you still trust God? Why don’t you curse him and die?”

10 Job replied, “Don’t talk like a fool! If we accept blessings from God, we must accept trouble as well.” In all that happened, Job never once said anything against God.

Job’s Three Friends

11 Eliphaz from Teman, Bildad from Shuah, and Zophar from Naamah[i] were three of Job’s friends, and they heard about his troubles. So they agreed to visit Job and comfort him. 12 When they came near enough to see Job, they could hardly recognize him. And in their great sorrow, they tore their clothes, then sprinkled dust on their heads and cried bitterly. 13 For seven days and nights, they sat silently on the ground beside him, because they realized what terrible pain he was in.

Job’s First Speech

Blot Out the Day of My Birth

Finally, Job cursed the day
of his birth
by saying to God:
Blot out the day of my birth
and the night when my parents
created a son.
Forget about that day,
cover it with darkness,
and send thick, gloomy shadows
to fill it with dread.
Erase that night from the calendar
and conceal it with darkness.
Don’t let children be created
or joyful shouts be heard
ever again in that night.
Let those with magic powers[j]
place a curse on that day.
Darken its morning stars
and remove all hope of light,
10 because it let me be born
into a world of trouble.

Why Didn’t I Die at Birth?

11 Why didn’t I die at birth?
12 Why was I accepted[k]
and allowed to nurse
at my mother’s breast?
13 Now I would be at peace
in the silent world below
14 with kings and their advisors
whose palaces lie in ruins,
15 and with rulers once rich
with silver and gold.
16 I wish I had been born dead
and then buried,
never to see
the light of day.
17 In the world of the dead,
the wicked and the weary rest
without a worry.
18 Everyone is there—
19 where captives and slaves
are free at last.

Why Does God Let Me Live?

20 Why does God let me live
when life is miserable
and so bitter?
21 I keep longing for death
more than I would seek
a valuable treasure.
22 Nothing could make me happier
than to be in the grave.
23 Why do I go on living
when God has me surrounded,
and I can’t see the road?
24 Moaning and groaning
are my food and drink,
25 and my worst fears
have all come true.
26 I have no peace or rest—
only troubles and worries.

  3. 1.6 Satan: Hebrew “the accuser.”
  4. 1.15 Sabeans: Perhaps the people of Sheba in what is now southwest Arabia (see Isaiah 60.6).
  5. 1.17 Chaldeans: People from the region of Babylonia, northeast of Palestine.
  6. 2.1 angels: See the note at 15.8.
  7. 2.1 Satan: See the note at 1.6.
  8. 2.4 There’s no pain like your own: The Hebrew text has “Skin for skin,” which was probably a popular saying.
  9. 2.11 Teman. . . Shuah. . . Naamah: Teman was a place in northern Edom; Shuah may have been a town on the Euphrates River or else further south, near the towns of Dedan and Sheba; Naamah may have been located on the road between Beirut and Damascus, though its exact location is unknown.
  10. 3.8 those with magic powers: The Hebrew text has “those who can place a curse on the day and rouse up Leviathan,” which was some kind of sea monster. God’s victory over this monster sometimes stood for God’s power over all creation and sometimes for his defeat of his enemies (see Isaiah 27.1). In Job 41.1, Leviathan is either a sea monster or a crocodile with almost supernatural powers.
  11. 3.12 Why was I accepted: The Hebrew text has “Why were there knees to receive me,” which may refer either to Job’s mother or to his father, who would have placed Job on his knees to show that he had accepted him as his child.

1 Corinthians 14:1-17

Speaking Unknown Languages and Prophesying

14 Love should be your guide. Be eager to have the gifts that come from the Holy Spirit, especially the gift of prophecy. If you speak languages that others don’t know, God will understand what you are saying, though no one else will know what you mean. You will be talking about mysteries that only the Spirit understands. But when you prophesy, you will be understood, and others will be helped. They will be encouraged and made to feel better.

By speaking languages that others don’t know, you help only yourself. But by prophesying you help everyone in the church. I am glad for you to speak unknown languages, although I had rather for you to prophesy. In fact, prophesying does much more good than speaking unknown languages, unless someone can help the church by explaining what you mean.

My friends, what good would it do, if I came and spoke unknown languages to you and didn’t explain what I meant? How would I help you, unless I told you what God had shown me or gave you some knowledge or prophecy or teaching? If all musical instruments sounded alike, how would you know the difference between a flute and a harp? If a bugle call isn’t clear, how would you know to get ready for battle?

That’s how it is when you speak unknown languages. If no one can understand what you are talking about, you will only be talking to the wind. 10 There are many different languages in this world, and all of them make sense. 11 But if I don’t understand the language that someone is using, we will be like foreigners to each other. 12 If you really want spiritual gifts, choose the ones that will be most helpful to the church.

13 When we speak languages that others don’t know, we should pray for the power to explain what we mean. 14 For example, if I use an unknown language in my prayers, my spirit prays but my mind is useless. 15 Then what should I do? There are times when I should pray with my spirit, and times when I should pray with my mind. Sometimes I should sing with my spirit, and at other times I should sing with my mind.

16 Suppose some strangers are in your worship service, when you are praising God with your spirit. If they don’t understand you, how will they know to say, “Amen”? 17 You may be worshiping God in a wonderful way, but no one else will be helped.

Psalm 37:12-29

12 Merciless people make plots
against good people
and snarl like animals,
13 but the Lord laughs and knows
their time is coming soon.
14 The wicked kill with swords
and shoot arrows
to murder
the poor and the needy
and all who do right.
15 But they will be killed
by their own swords,
and their arrows
will be broken.

16 It is better to live right
and be poor
than to be sinful and rich.
17 The wicked will lose all
of their power,
but the Lord gives strength
to everyone who is good.

18 Those who obey the Lord
are daily in his care,
and what he has given them
will be theirs forever.
19 They won’t be in trouble
when times are bad,
and they will have plenty
when food is scarce.

20 Wicked people are enemies
of the Lord
and will vanish like smoke
from a field on fire.

21 An evil person borrows
and never pays back;
a good person is generous
and never stops giving.
22 Everyone the Lord blesses
will receive the land;
everyone the Lord curses
will be destroyed.

23 If you do what the Lord wants,
he will make certain
each step you take is sure.
24 The Lord will hold your hand,
and if you stumble,
you still won’t fall.

25 As long as I can remember,
good people have never
been left helpless,
and their children have never
gone begging for food.
26 They gladly give and lend,
and their children
turn out good.

27 If you stop sinning
and start doing right,
you will keep living
and be secure forever.
28 The Lord loves justice,
and he won’t ever desert
his faithful people.
He always protects them,
but destroys the children
of the wicked.
29 God’s people will own the land
and live here forever.

Proverbs 21:25-26

25 If you want too much
and are too lazy to work,
it could be fatal.
26 But people who obey God
are always generous.

Esther 8:1-10:3 , 1 Corinthians 12:27-13:13 , Psalms 37:1-11 , Proverbs 21:23-24

Today is the 20th day of August. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian. It’s a pleasure and an honor to be here with you today and even a joy as we come around the global campfire and lock arms and hearts in the spirit and take the next step forward together. And that’s the important thing, that we’re taking the next step forward together. So, let’s dive in. We’re reading from the contemporary English version this week. And we’ve been working our way through the book of Esther, which we will conclude today. Esther chapter 8, verse 1 through 10 verse 3.

Commentary:

Okay. So, we concluded the book of Esther and Mordecai became the most influential voice in the king’s life and rescued the Jewish people from annihilation with the help of the Queen, of course. And rather than being destroyed the Hebrew people were allowed to destroy their enemies, a radically different outcome than Haman had intended. Something interesting about Esther… So, when the Hebrew text was originally translated over into Greek, so we’re talking about third century BC, so, a couple centuries before Jesus came. In the Septuagint, there are like six more chapters to Esther. So, this was observed by St. Jerome, who translated the Bible using the Septuagint. So, he translated the Bible from Greek into Latin, called the Vulgate. So, at that point that material was put toward the end. And then later, just consider part of the apocryphal writings and called the additions to Esther. And a lot of what’s included in those chapters are the prayers. So, for example, when Mordecai tells Esther she needs to go before the king because she may have been born for such a time as this, her request is that Mordecai go get all the Jewish people and fast and pray and that she is going to do the same thing. And that’s what they do. The additions to Esther include a lot of that prayer, those prayers and intercession over Esther going before the king. So, I’ve read a number of the apocryphal books and recorded them and their available in the Daily Audio Bible shop including the additions to Esther for your listening pleasure and for further research, especially if you love this story as I do. So, you can check that out in the Daily Audio Bible shop. But that’s not all we did today. We didn’t just finish the book of Esther.

In first Corinthians we reached the most well-known portions of Scripture in all of the Bible, the love chapter, right? Most of us can quote portions of 1 Corinthians 13, if we want, but we don’t always know context. And as we make our journey through the Bible we try to…we try to illuminate the context as often as we can because it illuminates the meaning of what it is that we’re reading. So, yesterday, Paul began talking about spiritual gifts and he shared how each person is uniquely gifted and together, these gifts serve a whole. And then he described the way in which the human body has a lot of parts, right? Some seen, some unseen. And the different parts of the body are all needed to make up the whole body. So, Paul tells us that’s how it is with the body of Christ. We’re each uniquely gifted and placed and have full permission to be exactly who we were created to be. In fact, we must become exactly who we were created to be for the body to thrive. And today Paul discussed the different kinds of posts that might be filled out from these giftings, right? Apostles and prophets, teachers, people who can work miracles, those with the gift of healing, helpers, those with leadership and administrative gifts, and those who can speak in unknown languages. And Paul essentially asked, can all of us be all of these things? And, of course, the answer is no. But there is one animating force that empowers each of these posts, gifts, and parts of the body and that animating force is love, which is how we got the love chapter, right? And Paul says, let me show you a way of life that’s best of all. And then we move into the description of love, right? So, no matter the gift, no matter the post, no matter the talents, none of it would amount to anything no matter how it’s celebrated without love. Love is what enables our gifts to be used properly. It’s what empowers us to assume roles of service and it’s what holds the body of Christ together. So, we’re told, three things will remain - faith, hope and love and the greatest of these is love. But there the three things that will remain. And we’ve been looking at Hope this year. Hope has been the word for this year and we find that hope is one of the three things that remain, right? So, there’s three things, it’s a trifecta of necessary things that are the things that left standing in the end, faith, hope and love. And, so, when we feel our lives. going sideways, like we’re about to go out of control or like we’re spinning around the drain about to go down, one or more of those essential things is being challenged, right? Faith, hope or love. Our lives will always veer off the narrow path that leads to life and veer into some sort of ravine where were going to crash unless these things are present.

Prayer:

And, so, Father, you are love. And, so, we realize we can’t love without you. And, so, we invite your Holy Spirit’s to show us the places inside of us that are simply lacking love that are devoid of love that are a barren wilderness inside of us. We need your love to come flourishing, flooding into these places. And we realize without faith and hope we can’t even see your love, we can’t recognize it for what it is, which is why so many are wandering around in the darkness and why you have put us here to be a light in the darkness by revealing your love for this world. We can’t do any of this without you. Why would we want to? And, so, come Holy Spirit and fill us anew with faith, hope and love. We ask in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hello Daily Audio Bible. This is Duane from Wisconsin. All praise and glory to our wonderful Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Today is day 61 praying for children. It is August 16th. Just a prayer request on my part, if you would continue to pray for my son Nicholas who is in jail. He’s going to be there for a couple more years. If you would please pray for him, that he will come to know the Lord better and get an opportunity to hear God’s word. Also, pray for my son Nathan and that he finds direction in his life. He is working but just that he’ll hopefully find a direction in his life and come to know the Lord as well. Today I’d like to lift up all of us with children out there. Lord, I want to give praise to all those children out there Lord who are following Your ways, leading a godly life. Lord, we thank you for the great, wonderful grace that is. Lord, we also want to, Lord, lift up those children out there who are hurting who feel alone, who feel lost Lord, that You would bring them back to You. Those who have medical conditions, Lord, health issues, we ask that You give them Your healing and, Your peace, comfort. Let them know that we, the Daily Audio Bible are with them, that their parents are there, family and friends, that we are there to support them and lift them up. And we ask that you would give them gracious blessings Lord and to heal them Lord if that is your will. We left this all up in Jesus’ name. Amen. And Brian and Jill thank you for this wonderful podcast.

[singing] Hallelujah, you are not alone [singing stops]. I have come to encourage you. [singing] He’s your comfort always holds you close [singing stops]. You are not alone my sisters. You are not alone my brothers, that God has promised that He would never leave you or forsake you. You are not alone because though you may be walking through a valley of a shadow of death, His rod and his staff is there to comfort you. You are not alone because God who is near to the broken hearted. You are not alone because though you may pass through many waters God will be with you. You are not alone because He has given His angels charge over you to keep you and all of your ways. You are not alone because you are surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses. You are not alone. Don’t listen to the lies of the enemy. God is with you, God is in you, God is for you and He is fighting for you. So, I stand in agreement with you and I speak victory over your life, victory over your heart, victory over your family, over your present and your future. And remember [singing] His spirit lives within you so you will walk in His piece. His spirit lives within you, your victory, your victory [singing stops]. I love you family. This is Prophetic Intercessor from North Carolina calling to remind someone that you are not alone. Love you. Be blessed.

Hi there. My name is Bremmel calling from London in the UK calling for a lady who called in on the 17th of August, 2018. And you called in for your broken family and you explained how your daughter committed suicide three years ago and what’s happened to her children and how you feel partly to blame because of what is happening. And I know you didn’t leave your name. I’m going to be praying for you and I’ve started praying for you. Any praise reports, please let us know. Any updates even if it’s not a praise report, please keep us posted. We’ll be praying for you and we’re thinking about you and the entire family. Our God heals. I’m praying for the peace that you asked for and I’ll also be praying for spiritual and emotional healing for your family because I believe you need that. May the Lord be with you and watch over you. Thank you. Bye-bye.

Good morning daily Bible. This is Terry the Trucker. I’m calling in today from a hospital bed. Wednesday at noon in Jackson, Mississippi I had a __ tire blowout and I hit the guardrail, then hit the end of the bridge dead on, flippin off of the bridge onto the embankment. It was a __ blessing the way I hit because I didn’t fall into the traffic below and hurt somebody else. I was on the phone with my wife when it happened. I dislocated my shoulder. Severe bruising and internal bleeding from on left shoulder from my seatbelt. Other than that, just banged up from head to toe. My dog, Snuffy, didn’t make it. They got him to the clinic. He died once, they revived him. Got him back. He died again. They couldn’t get them back. Guys, I just ask for your prayers for healing. It’s gonna take time but I’ve got a feeling __ we’re going to have to step away from it. I’d pray but I think it might have been God’s way of saying don’t do it. But anyway, I want you to I’m still praying for everyone that calls in and I appreciate all y’all’s prayers. You all have a super blessed day. Thank you.

Esther 8-10

A Happy Ending for the Jews

Before the end of the day, King Xerxes gave Esther everything that had belonged to Haman, the enemy of the Jews. Esther told the king that Mordecai was her cousin. So the king made Mordecai one of his highest officials and gave him the royal ring that Haman had worn. Then Esther put Mordecai in charge of Haman’s property.

Once again Esther went to speak to the king. This time she fell down at his feet, crying and begging, “Please stop Haman’s evil plan to have the Jews killed!” King Xerxes held out the golden scepter to Esther, and she got up and said, “Your Majesty, I know that you will do the right thing and that you really love me. Please stop what Haman has planned. He has already sent letters demanding that the Jews in all your provinces be killed, and I can’t bear to see my people and my own relatives destroyed.”

King Xerxes then said to Esther and Mordecai, “I have already ordered Haman to be hanged and his house given to Esther, because of his evil plans to kill the Jews. I now give you permission to make a law that will save the lives of your people. You may use my ring to seal the law, so that it can never be changed.”

On the twenty-third day of Sivan,[a] the third month, the king’s secretaries wrote the law. They obeyed Mordecai and wrote to the Jews, the rulers, the governors, and the officials of all one hundred twenty-seven provinces from India to Ethiopia.[b] The letters were written in every language used in the kingdom, including the Jewish language. 10 They were written in the name of King Xerxes and sealed with his ring. Then they were taken by messengers who rode the king’s finest and fastest horses.

11-13 In these letters the king said:

On the thirteenth day of Adar,[c] the twelfth month, the Jews in every city and province will be allowed to get together and defend themselves. They may destroy any army that attacks them, and they may kill all of their enemies, including women and children. They may also take everything that belongs to their enemies.

A copy of this law is to be posted in every province and read by everyone.

14-15 Then the king ordered his messengers to take their fastest horses and deliver the law as quickly as possible to every province. When Mordecai left, he was wearing clothes fit for a king. He wore blue and white robes, a large gold crown, and a cape made of fine linen and purple cloth.

After the law was announced in Susa, everyone shouted and cheered, 16 and the Jews were no longer afraid. In fact, they were very happy and felt that they had won a victory.

17 In every province and city where the law was sent, the Jews had parties and celebrated. Many of the people in the provinces accepted the Jewish religion, because they were now afraid of the Jews.

The Jews Destroy Their Enemies

The first law that the king had made was to be followed on the thirteenth day of Adar,[d] the twelfth month. This was the very day that the enemies of the Jews had hoped to do away with them. But the Jews turned things around, and in the cities of every province they came together to attack their enemies. Everyone was afraid of the Jews, and no one could do anything to oppose them.

The leaders of the provinces, the rulers, the governors, and the court officials were afraid of Mordecai and took sides with the Jews. Everyone in the provinces knew that the king had promoted him and had given him a lot of power.

The Jews took their swords and did away with their enemies, without showing any mercy. 6-10 They killed five hundred people in Susa,[e] but they did not take anything that belonged to the ones they killed. Haman had been one of the worst enemies of the Jews, and ten of his sons were among those who were killed. Their names were Parshandatha, Dalphon, Aspatha, Poratha, Adalia, Aridatha, Parmashta, Arisai, Aridai, and Vaizatha.

11 Later that day, someone told the king how many people had been killed in Susa.[f] 12 Then he told Esther, “Five hundred people, including Haman’s ten sons, have been killed in Susa alone. If that many were killed here, what must have happened in the provinces? Is there anything else you want done? Just tell me, and it will be done.”

13 Esther answered, “Your Majesty, please let the Jews in Susa fight to defend themselves tomorrow, just as they did today. And order the bodies of Haman’s ten sons to be hanged in public.”

14 King Xerxes did what Esther had requested, and the bodies of Haman’s sons were hung in Susa. 15 Then on the fourteenth day of Adar the Jews of the city got together and killed three hundred more people. But they still did not take anything that belonged to their enemies.

16-17 On the thirteenth day of Adar, the Jews in the provinces had come together to defend themselves. They killed seventy-five thousand of their enemies, but the Jews did not take anything that belonged to the ones they killed. Then on the fourteenth day of the month the Jews celebrated with a feast.

18 On the fifteenth day of the month the Jews in Susa held a holiday and celebrated, after killing their enemies on the thirteenth and the fourteenth. 19 This is why the Jews in the villages now celebrate on the fourteenth day of the month. It is a joyful holiday that they celebrate by feasting and sending gifts of food to each other.

The Festival of Purim

20 Mordecai wrote down everything that had happened. Then he sent letters to the Jews everywhere in the provinces 21 and told them:

Each year you must celebrate on both the fourteenth and the fifteenth of Adar, 22 the days when we Jews defeated our enemies. Remember this month as a time when our sorrow was turned to joy, and celebration took the place of crying. Celebrate by having parties and by giving to the poor and by sharing gifts of food with each other.

23 They followed Mordecai’s instructions and set aside these two days every year as a time of celebration.

The Reason for the Festival of Purim

24 Haman was the son of Hammedatha and a descendant of Agag. He hated the Jews so much that he planned to destroy them, but he wanted to find out the best time to do it. So he cast lots.[g]

25 Esther went to King Xerxes and asked him to save her people. Then the king gave written orders for Haman and his sons to be punished in the same terrible way that Haman had in mind for the Jews. So they were hanged. 26 Mordecai’s letter had said that the Jews must celebrate for two days because of what had happened to them. This time of celebration is called Purim,[h] which is the Hebrew word for the lots that were cast. 27 Now every year the Jews set aside these two days for having parties and celebrating, just as they were told to do. 28 From now on, all Jewish families must remember to celebrate Purim on these two days each year.

29 Queen Esther, daughter of Abihail, wanted to give full authority to Mordecai’s letter about the Festival of Purim, and with his help she wrote a letter about the feast. 30 Copies of this letter were sent to Jews in the one hundred twenty-seven provinces of King Xerxes. In the letter they said:

We pray that all of you will live in peace and safety.

31 You and your descendants must always remember to celebrate Purim at the time and in the way that we have said. You must also follow the instructions that we have given you about mourning and going without eating.[i]

32 These laws about Purim are written by the authority of Queen Esther.

The Greatness of Xerxes and Mordecai

10 King Xerxes made everyone in his kingdom pay taxes, even those in lands across the sea. All the great and famous things that King Xerxes did are written in the record books of the kings of Media and Persia. These records also tell about the honors that the king gave to Mordecai. Next to the king himself, Mordecai was the highest official in the kingdom. He was a popular leader of the Jews, because he helped them in many ways and would even speak to the king for them.

1 Corinthians 12:27-13:13

27 Together you are the body of Christ. Each one of you is part of his body. 28 First, God chose some people to be apostles and prophets and teachers for the church. But he also chose some to work miracles or heal the sick or help others or be leaders or speak different kinds of languages. 29 Not everyone is an apostle. Not everyone is a prophet. Not everyone is a teacher. Not everyone can work miracles. 30 Not everyone can heal the sick. Not everyone can speak different kinds of languages. Not everyone can tell what these languages mean. 31 I want you to desire the best gifts.[a] So I will show you a much better way.

Love

13 What if I could speak
all languages
of humans
and of angels?
If I did not love others,
I would be nothing more
than a noisy gong
or a clanging cymbal.
What if I could prophesy
and understand all secrets
and all knowledge?
And what if I had faith
that moved mountains?
I would be nothing,
unless I loved others.
What if I gave away all
that I owned
and let myself
be burned alive?[b]
I would gain nothing,
unless I loved others.
Love is kind and patient,
never jealous, boastful,
proud, or rude.
Love isn’t selfish
or quick tempered.
It doesn’t keep a record
of wrongs that others do.
Love rejoices in the truth,
but not in evil.
Love is always supportive,
loyal, hopeful,
and trusting.
Love never fails!

Everyone who prophesies
will stop,
and unknown languages
will no longer
be spoken.
All that we know
will be forgotten.
We don’t know everything,
and our prophecies
are not complete.
10 But what is perfect
will someday appear,
and what isn’t perfect
will then disappear.

11 When we were children,
we thought and reasoned
as children do.
But when we grew up,
we quit our childish ways.
12 Now all we can see of God
is like a cloudy picture
in a mirror.
Later we will see him
face to face.
We don’t know everything,
but then we will,
just as God completely
understands us.
13 For now there are faith,
hope, and love.
But of these three,
the greatest is love.

Footnotes:

  1. 12.31 I want you to desire the best gifts: Or “You desire the best gifts.”
  2. 13.3 and let myself be burned alive: Some manuscripts have “so that I could brag.”

Psalm 37:1-11

(By David.)

Trust the Lord

37 Don’t be annoyed by anyone
who does wrong,
and don’t envy them.
They will soon disappear
like grass without rain.

Trust the Lord and live right!
The land will be yours,
and you will be safe.
Do what the Lord wants,
and he will give you
your heart’s desire.

Let the Lord lead you
and trust him to help.
Then it will be as clear
as the noonday sun
that you were right.

Be patient and trust the Lord.
Don’t let it bother you
when all goes well for those
who do sinful things.
Don’t be angry or furious.
Anger can lead to sin.
All sinners will disappear,
but if you trust the Lord,
the land will be yours.

10 Sinners will soon disappear,
never to be found,
11 but the poor will take the land
and enjoy a big harvest.

Proverbs 21:23-24

23 Watching what you say
can save you
a lot of trouble.
24 If you are proud and conceited,
everyone will say,
“You’re a snob!”

Community Prayer and Praise:

Good morning Daily Audio Bible family. This is Lee from New Jersey and today is August 16th. And we’re at day 66. So, I want to give you guys a quick story. So, yesterday was pretty much…it was a day to just either start swinging or roll up into a little ball and just cry. I don’t know, one of those. I would’ve chose one of them __, but anyways. Yesterday, work was very difficult, very challenging. Left a lot later than normal. Traffic was horrible, then I got home and I had to cut the grass. The grass was superhigh. It looked like a jungle out there. So, when I started cutting the grass, basically, we have an electric…I had an electric lawn mower…I’ll explain why…and cut the cord and half, the extension cord with the blade underneath. So, I stopped that I was doing and put the cord back together. I did a quick connection there and finished at least the backyard. When I get to the front yard, the grass was so high and I was pushing that electric lawnmower so much that it just __ out, completely burned out. So, I was stuck there. So, my next-door neighbor who’s just __ my actual neighbor, he’s a great guy, his name is Jerry. And I want you guys to send him all your blessings and pray for this guy. He has shown me what a neighbor really is. He lends me is lawnmower. He helped me out so much. He taught me a lot of things that I even though __ man. We’re almost the same age but I really wish I had a dad like you. Like, he just showed me so many things in such a short amount of time that I was just amazed. So, he’s definitely taught me one big thing and it’s the…how to be neighborly and how to show God…how to bring God into every situation. And I don’t think he’s…he’s a believer, but he’s not exactly a practicing Christian but he goes to church and all that. But definitely, he shows it. So, guys let’s pray for Jerry and let’s do a quick prayer for anger. Let’s thank God…

Good morning Daily Audio Bible family. I hope you can hear me. This is Sarah in Nebraska and I am driving to work in a rainstorm this morning, Thursday morning. And I just was listening, it’s 16th today, to the daily reading. And No One Left Behind called in from Colorado about her anniversary, her anniversary and being grateful. And that was the last call made today. And, so, as is my practice I just started my prayers for the community and my family. And, as usual, I was praising God for His…today I was just praising him for His continual love for us, the constant love that He has that never wavers, that never falters. And He tickled my conscience with a revelation of me not being grateful as she had called about. It was her anniversary. She started to not be grateful that morning due to something her husband had done. And I often…I…more often than not, that is me. I can talk to God and be grateful and thankful but some of the most important people in my life, often I’m not. And God showed that to me today. And, so, today I am going to be grateful. I’m going to do my best to reflect God in all I do, all I say, especially to those most important to me, like my husband. So, I just thank you No One Left Behind in Colorado for those words.

Hello Daily Audio Bible family it’s Jay from Nashville Tennessee. Let’s pray. Precious Lord, in the name of Jesus Christ, we bow our hearts, our minds, and our spirits before your Majesty. Lord, we adore everything about you. We are overwhelmed by Your power. We’re mesmerized by Your grace. And we’re bewildered by Your love. Father, we confess of anything that we’ve done that goes against Your will, Your word, and Your spirit for our lives Father. Lord, we thank You for today. We thank You for this very moment. We thank You for the opportunity to join together with one another praying for one another, praying for our country, praying for our children, praying for our leaders, praying for our pastors, praying for those to heal and those who fix, and those who deliver, and those who deal with situations that are beyond our own understanding. Lord, we thank You for this now in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen. I just wanted to mention that it’s raining here in Tennessee and the crazy thing about rain in Tennessee is it could be raining on one side of the street or could be raining on the other side of the street or it could be completely dry on one side and raining on another. I say that because in life sometimes will have rain on our side of the street and then we’ll notice on the other side of the street, it’s a great situation, better than where we are. But what I want to do is recognize that in this rain there is a blessing, light comes through rain. We wouldn’t have all this greenery that you see every day here in Nashville without the rain. God bless.

Hello Daily Audio Bible family. This is John Corrado from Bethlehem Pennsylvania. I hope you guys are all doing well. It is the 16th August here, 2018. And folks I am just pumped up beyond all recognition for what God is doing in your lives and the lives of all you all that call-in. So thankful Brian and Jill for what you do in your ministry and this community and the transformation that it has had and how it’s played a role in my life. It’s just absolutely amazing. First of all, Mark Street, dude, thank you for the shout out recently. I heard my name and man that really, it really made my heart leap for joy. I know how much of loved by God. I know who my Father is but, ya know, you’re on the other side of the world and to hear you say that you were thinking about me meant the world today. So, thank you so much for that Mark and God bless you. I’m thinking about you too. And folks, I think about you all, all the time. You know my friend Sarah Evans up in Canada and myself, we do the Daily Audio Bible transcriptions, every day. So, we listen to your prayer requests, we pray along with you. I’m praying with you. I hear your praise reports and am praising with you. And I don’t call-in frequently enough but here I am today. I just want to extend thanks and gratitude to you all for your prayers over my family. Real quickly, and I’ll call back with another update, my daughter Kelsey who’s in California that moved out to Los Angeles back in April, everything is going very very well for her. She’s going through struggles and challenges but she recently came back to find Jesus and put Him at the center of her life again and what a remarkable difference in this young lady because of you guys and what you’ve done for me. God bless you. I love you all and we’ll see you at the reunion.

Esther 4-7

Mordecai Asks for Esther’s Help

When Mordecai heard about the letter, he tore his clothes in sorrow and put on sackcloth. Then he covered his head with ashes and went through the city, crying and weeping. But he could go only as far as the palace gate, because no one wearing sackcloth was allowed inside the palace. In every province where the king’s orders were read, the Jews cried and mourned, and they went without eating.[a] Many of them even put on sackcloth and sat in ashes.

When Esther’s servant girls and her other servants told her what Mordecai was doing, she became very upset and sent Mordecai some clothes to wear in place of the sackcloth. But he refused to take them.

Esther had a servant named Hathach, who had been given to her by the king. So she called him in and said, “Find out what’s wrong with Mordecai and why he’s acting this way.”

Hathach went to Mordecai in the city square in front of the palace gate, and Mordecai told him everything that had happened. He also told him how much money Haman had promised to add to the king’s treasury, if all the Jews were killed.

Mordecai gave Hathach a copy of the orders for the murder of the Jews and told him that these had been read in Susa. He said, “Show this to Esther and explain what it means. Ask her to go to the king and beg him to have pity on her people, the Jews!”

Hathach went back to Esther and told her what Mordecai had said. 10 She answered, “Tell Mordecai 11 there is a law about going in to see the king, and all his officials and his people know about this law. Anyone who goes in to see the king without being invited by him will be put to death. The only way that anyone can be saved is for the king to hold out the gold scepter to that person. And it’s been thirty days since he has asked for me.”

12 When Mordecai was told what Esther had said, 13 he sent back this reply, “Don’t think that you will escape being killed with the rest of the Jews, just because you live in the king’s palace. 14 If you don’t speak up now, we will somehow get help, but you and your family will be killed. It could be that you were made queen for a time like this!”

15 Esther sent a message to Mordecai, saying, 16 “Bring together all the Jews in Susa and tell them to go without eating for my sake! Don’t eat or drink for three days and nights. My servant girls and I will do the same. Then I will go in to see the king, even if it means I must die.”

17 Mordecai did everything Esther told him to do.

Esther Invites the King and Haman to a Dinner

Three days later, Esther dressed in her royal robes and went to the inner court of the palace in front of the throne. The king was sitting there, facing the open doorway. He was happy to see Esther, and he held out the gold scepter to her.

When Esther came up and touched the tip of the scepter, the king said, “Esther, what brings you here? Just ask, and I will give you as much as half of my kingdom.”

Esther answered, “Your Majesty, please come with Haman to a dinner I will prepare for you later today.”

The king said to his servants, “Hurry and get Haman, so we can accept Esther’s invitation.”

The king and Haman went to Esther’s dinner, and while they were drinking wine, the king asked her, “What can I do for you? Just ask, and I will give you as much as half of my kingdom.”

7-8 Esther replied, “Your Majesty, if you really care for me and are willing to do what I want, please come again tomorrow with Haman to the dinner I will prepare for you. At that time I will answer Your Majesty’s question.”

Haman Plans To Kill Mordecai

Haman was feeling great as he left. But when he saw Mordecai at the palace gate, he noticed that Mordecai did not stand up or show him any respect. This made Haman really angry, 10 but he did not say a thing.

When Haman got home, he called together his friends and his wife Zeresh 11 and started bragging about his great wealth and all his sons. He told them the many ways that the king had honored him and how all the other officials and leaders had to respect him. 12 Haman added, “That’s not all! Besides the king himself, I’m the only person Queen Esther invited for dinner. She has also invited the king and me to dinner tomorrow. 13 But none of this makes me happy, as long as I see that Jew Mordecai sitting at the palace gate.”

14 Haman’s wife and friends said to him, “Have a tower built about seventy-five feet high, and tomorrow morning ask the king to hang Mordecai there. Then later, you can have dinner with the king and enjoy yourself.”

This seemed like a good idea to Haman, and he had the tower built.

The King Honors Mordecai

That night the king could not sleep, and he had a servant read him the records of what had happened since he had been king. When the servant read how Mordecai had kept Bigthana and Teresh from killing the king, the king asked, “What has been done to reward Mordecai for this?”

“Nothing, Your Majesty!” the king’s servants replied.

About this time, Haman came in to ask the king to have Mordecai hanged on the tower he had built. The king saw him and asked, “Who is that man waiting in front of the throne room?”

The king’s servants answered, “Your Majesty, it is Haman.”

“Have him come in,” the king commanded.

When Haman entered the room, the king asked him, “What should I do for a man I want to honor?”

Haman was sure that he was the one the king wanted to honor. So he replied, “Your Majesty, if you wish to honor a man, have someone bring him one of your own robes and one of your own horses with a fancy headdress. Have one of your highest officials place your robe on this man and lead him through the streets on your horse, while someone shouts, ‘This is how the king honors a man!’”

10 The king replied, “Hurry and do just what you have said! Don’t forget a thing. Get the robe and the horse for Mordecai the Jew, who is on duty at the palace gate!”

11 Haman got the king’s robe and put it on Mordecai. He led him through the city on the horse and shouted as he went, “This is how the king honors a man!”

12 Afterwards, Mordecai returned to his duties at the palace gate, and Haman hurried home, hiding his face in shame. 13 Haman told his wife and friends what had happened. Then his wife and his advisors said, “If Mordecai is a Jew, this is just the beginning of your troubles! You will end up a ruined man.” 14 They were still talking, when the king’s servants came and quickly took Haman to the dinner that Esther had prepared.

Haman Is Punished

The king and Haman were dining with Esther and drinking wine during the second dinner, when the king again said, “Esther, what can I do for you? Just ask, and I will give you as much as half of my kingdom!”

Esther answered, “Your Majesty, if you really care for me and are willing to help, you can save me and my people. That’s what I really want, because a reward has been promised to anyone who kills my people. Your Majesty, if we were merely going to be sold as slaves, I would not have bothered you.”[b]

“Who would dare to do such a thing?” the king asked.

Esther replied, “That evil Haman is the one out to get us!”

Haman was terrified, as he looked at the king and the queen.

The king was so angry that he got up, left his wine, and went out into the palace garden.

Haman realized that the king had already decided what to do with him, and he stayed and begged Esther to save his life.

Just as the king came back into the room, Haman got down on his knees beside Esther, who was lying on the couch. The king shouted, “Now you’re even trying to rape my queen here in my own palace!”

As soon as the king said this, his servants covered Haman’s head. Then Harbona, one of the king’s personal servants, said, “Your Majesty, Haman built a tower seventy-five feet high beside his house, so he could hang Mordecai on it. And Mordecai is the very one who spoke up and saved your life.”

“Hang Haman from his own tower!” the king commanded. 10 Right away, Haman was hanged on the tower he had built to hang Mordecai, and the king calmed down.

Spiritual Gifts

12 My friends, you asked me about spiritual gifts. I want you to remember that before you became followers of the Lord, you were led in all the wrong ways by idols that cannot even talk. Now I want you to know that if you are led by God’s Spirit, you will say that Jesus is Lord, and you will never curse Jesus.

There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but they all come from the same Spirit. There are different ways to serve the same Lord, and we can each do different things. Yet the same God works in all of us and helps us in everything we do.

The Spirit has given each of us a special way of serving others. Some of us can speak with wisdom, while others can speak with knowledge, but these gifts come from the same Spirit. To others the Spirit has given great faith or the power to heal the sick 10 or the power to work mighty miracles. Some of us are prophets, and some of us recognize when God’s Spirit is present.[a] Others can speak different kinds of languages, and still others can tell what these languages mean. 11 But it is the Spirit who does all this and decides which gifts to give to each of us.

One Body with Many Parts

12 The body of Christ has many different parts, just as any other body does. 13 Some of us are Jews, and others are Gentiles. Some of us are slaves, and others are free. But God’s Spirit baptized each of us and made us part of the body of Christ. Now we each drink from that same Spirit.[b]

14 Our bodies don’t have just one part. They have many parts. 15 Suppose a foot says, “I’m not a hand, and so I’m not part of the body.” Wouldn’t the foot still belong to the body? 16 Or suppose an ear says, “I’m not an eye, and so I’m not part of the body.” Wouldn’t the ear still belong to the body? 17 If our bodies were only an eye, we couldn’t hear a thing. And if they were only an ear, we couldn’t smell a thing. 18 But God has put all parts of our body together in the way that he decided is best.

19 A body isn’t really a body, unless there is more than one part. 20 It takes many parts to make a single body. 21 That’s why the eyes cannot say they don’t need the hands. That’s also why the head cannot say it doesn’t need the feet. 22 In fact, we cannot get along without the parts of the body that seem to be the weakest. 23 We take special care to dress up some parts of our bodies. We are modest about our personal parts, 24 but we don’t have to be modest about other parts.

God put our bodies together in such a way that even the parts that seem the least important are valuable. 25 He did this to make all parts of the body work together smoothly, with each part caring about the others. 26 If one part of our body hurts, we hurt all over. If one part of our body is honored, the whole body will be happy.

  2. 12.13 Some of us are Jews. . . that same Spirit: Verse 13 may also be translated, “God’s Spirit is inside each of us, and all around us as well. So it doesn’t matter that some of us are Jews and others are Gentiles and that some are slaves and others are free. Together we are one body.”

Psalm 36

(For the music leader by David, the Lord’s servant.)

Human Sin and God’s Goodness

36 Sinners don’t respect God;
sin is all they think about.
They like themselves too much
to hate their own sins
or even to see them.
They tell deceitful lies,
and they don’t have the sense
to live right.
Those people stay awake,
thinking up mischief,
and they follow the wrong road,
refusing to turn from sin.

Your love is faithful, Lord,
and even the clouds in the sky
can depend on you.
Your decisions are always fair.
They are firm like mountains,
deep like the sea,
and all people and animals
are under your care.

Your love is a treasure,
and everyone finds shelter
in the shadow of your wings.
You give your guests a feast
in your house,
and you serve a tasty drink
that flows like a river.
The life-giving fountain
belongs to you,
and your light gives light
to each of us.

10 Our Lord, keep showing love
to everyone who knows you,
and use your power to save
all whose thoughts please you.
11 Don’t let those proud
and merciless people
kick me around
or chase me away.

12 Look at those wicked people!
They are knocked down,
never to get up again.

Proverbs 21:21-22

21 If you try to be kind and good,
you will be blessed with life
and goodness and honor.
22 One wise person can defeat
a city full of soldiers
and capture their fortress.

Esther 1:1-3:15 , 1 Corinthians 11:17-34 , Psalms 35:17-28 , Proverbs 21:19-20

Today is the 18th day of August. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian and it’s great to be here with you as we close down another week. And even as we close down another week, we’ll be opening a brand new book today.

Introduction to the book of Esther:

The book of Esther is a short little book, but it’s a high drama story that’s full of intrigue. Esther tells of a young Hebrew girl named Hadassah who was orphaned while in exile in Persia. And then she was taken in and raised as a daughter by her cousin Mordecai who was of the tribe of Benjamin. But they were in exile and exiled Hebrews often took on localized names. So, Hadassah was given the name Esther, which translates to mean star or morning star in Jewish tradition. From the scriptures we know that Esther was stunningly beautiful and she possessed a quiet character. And when King Ahasuerus, who is associated with Xerxes, sought to find a replacement for the banished Queen Vashti, Esther was chosen, although she kept the fact that she was Jewish a secret. And this proved very providential. Around the same time, a man named Haman rose to prominence before the king. And Haman was a descendant of King Agag of Amalec. So, the Hebrews and the Amalekites had been enemies dating all the way back to their origins, which would be Jacob and Esau. King Agag was executed by the prophet Samuel after King Saul defeated the Amalekites in battle. So, Haman’s hated of the Jews was personal. And it was reignited when Mordecai would not bow down before him in honor as the king’s highest official. And so Haman devised a plan to annihilate every Jew in the Persian empire. So, that’s quite a backdrop for quite a dramatic story. On one side of the king was this beautiful Jewish queen Esther. On the other side was this high official Haman who intended to wipe all Jews from the earth. So, the book of Esther is the basis for the festival Purim for the Jewish people, which was established by Mordecai in the book of Esther. The story takes place during the same period of history that we’ve been reading about when we’ve read through Nehemiah and the previous books that describe the exile. We’ll find many parallels in the book of Esther that we can apply to our lives. And God will always show up. The circumstance doesn’t always dictate the outcome of things. And everyone has an important role to play because God brings people into the picture for specific times and specific missions to get major things done in his kingdom. This can be large as Queen Esther saving God’s people from destruction or God sending you to rescue your next door neighbor. We’re all here for such a time as this. And so, with that being said, let’s dive into the book of Esther 1:1-3:15. And we’re reading from the Good News Translation this week.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word. We thank You for another week in Your word. And we thank You for all that You have spoken to us, all that You have shifted within us, all the seeds that have been planted in our lives that will yield a harvest. And we thank You for bringing us this far. All the way to the beautiful and redemptive story of Esther. We ask that Your Holy Spirit plant this in our lives and we thank You God. We love You and we worship You. And we pray these things in Jesus name. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Good morning Daily Audio Bible. My name is Joy. This is my first time calling in and I’m so blessed by this ministry. I have been enjoying it on my walks and jogs every morning and I assure you that I have been praying and growing. This morning I’m calling in because I was encouraged to when I heard two other brothers from the prayer line call in who are in ministry as we are. And I felt led to go ahead and call in my first time to ask for prayer for my husband and I. We recently planted a church, our second, in Texas. And it’s been a four year journey and we decided to let go of this position because another phone call came in for a church in Missouri. And, so, we have been moving that direction, to take over a church in Missouri. However, we got a call the night before at 9 PM from that church, the night before we were to be celebrated the next Sunday morning to say goodbye to our church in Texas that that board has decided not to continue with us because we are foster parents who are having to go to court and be in trials to win our baby boy who we have had for 20 months in our home and we also have his sister and she is adopted. This trial has been going on since the end of January. It is now August. No one has ever seen a trial go this long and every time we go to court there seems to be a reschedule and with no end in sight. And so we lost this church and…this is the church in Missouri as well. All was…

Hi. My name is Shika from Los Angeles and I just started listening. __ start from January and I just hit February and I’ve fallen in love with the community and all I can think of is how I really wish I had a community like this. But I’m calling because I really need prayer. I’ve been married for four years. I’ve known him for nine years. He’s traditional, like, he’s Indian family. And I __ from Jamaica. And his parents have just made my life hell. And I thought it was just his past, like, they call me the N word, they call me __. And I’ve put up with this cause I thought…well…they don’t know better. My __ family, they don’t know Jesus but he’s been the problem too. He just came down and __ hateful person. And then when I was pregnant he was really verbally and emotionally abusive. He would like scream at me. And right when I had my son he __ didn’t want anything to do with him. And he was just terrible. He just….he was just so caught up on status and show. That there was spite for him. And, I’d said, you know, we needed a good environment __, and we need to be separated. __ that I have to fight him tooth and nail. __. I spoke to a lawyer and he said that he would get custody. __. And if he was as manipulative as I say then I won’t fare well. So, I don’t know what to do. I tried everything. I’ve tried counseling. Maybe my message is too long. I’ve tried counseling multiple times. __ I’ve tried everything I could with him. But he still is always blaming me and putting me down and I don’t know how to get out of this and I don’t know how to get strong enough to __ life time because he’s only twenty two months and __ custody…and…

Hi DAB family. This is Shelby. Forgive me for reading this but I don’t want to ramble. I’ve been listening for six years and finally got the courage to call today. I pray along with you all and look forward to hearing your familiar voices most every day. I’m asking you all to pray with me in finding the house that the Lord would have me have because I am a single changing aging woman and desperately need to downsize to something I can manage. I can’t afford to move unless I sell my house and I feel trapped in it. I’ve been down in the dumps over my living situation for years and I’m stepping out of faith, asking the Lord to provide the house of his choosing. I already feel the Lord’s hand in this because I found a home that I think will work and a couple is coming to look at my house on Saturday. I haven’t even listed it in the house and found wasn’t listed. Please pray that if it’s the Lord’s will, and that’s the important part, the couple will buy it and I will be able to get the other house. Timing is critical. I need prayer for wisdom, discernment, and courage to handle the negotiation and all of the for sale by owner transactions. I confess, I’m afraid. I also need strength to finish cleaning and decluttering before they see the house on Saturday, August 18th. Thank you family, Brian, and Jill for your prayers and all that you do. Listening to the Bible through the DAB all these years has changed my life and by relationship with the Lord. I recommend it to everyone I talk to. I hope to come back soon with a praise report. God bless you all. Bye-bye.

Hi family this is Prophetic Intercessor from North Carolina calling just to say shed prayer for those who feel that their dreams have been deferred for so long. And I have been so heavy the last two days. And my brother and my mother prayed for me just a few hours ago and I felt such a weight lift and I wanted to pass that forward because I know what it is to feel heavy and I know what it is to have a dream that’s deferred that makes your heartsick. But the other part of the verse in proverbs says that when the dream is fulfilled it is like a tree of light. So, I’m just calling to pray for those who find themselves with sickened hearts because there’s s some dreams and desires you’ve laid before God that you haven’t seen manifested yet. And I want to speak light over your life and I want to encourage you to stay on the course because God is not a man that He should rise but every word that He spoke He is well able to bring it to pass and I pray that God send a fresh wind into your life today to breathe upon every dry dream, to breathe upon every dry bone, that a new wind will come to every valley that you’re walking in until flesh comes back upon your bones and until you are reinvigorated. I pray in the name of Jesus that He would invigorate your heart today with peace, with joy, with hope, and with strength. That you will not stagger at the promise, but that you would hold fast, and that God would release eagles wings so that you do not faint, hallelujah, and that you do not fall moments before you cross over the finish line because the enemy’s tactic is to wear us out before we lay hold of the promise. But I rebuke every satanic plot that gets you to give up moments before the promise is realized in your life. And I join forces with you as a prophetic intercessor and I stand in the gap with you that your heart will no longer be sick because your dream is coming to be fulfilled. Be blessed. And I…

Esther 1-3

Queen Vashti Defies King Xerxes

(A)1-2 From his royal throne in Persia's capital city of Susa, King Xerxes ruled 127 provinces, all the way from India to Ethiopia.[a]

In the third year of his reign he gave a banquet for all his officials and administrators. The armies of Persia and Media were present, as well as the governors and noblemen of the provinces. For six whole months he made a show of the riches of the imperial court with all its splendor and majesty.

After that, the king gave a banquet for all the people in the capital city of Susa, rich and poor alike. It lasted a whole week and was held in the gardens of the royal palace. The courtyard there was decorated with blue and white cotton curtains, tied by cords of fine purple linen to silver rings on marble columns. Couches made of gold and silver had been placed in the courtyard, which was paved with white marble, red feldspar, shining mother-of-pearl, and blue turquoise. Drinks were served in gold cups, no two of them alike, and the king was generous with the royal wine. There were no limits on the drinks; the king had given orders to the palace servants that everyone could have as much as they wanted.[b]

Meanwhile, inside the royal palace Queen Vashti was giving a banquet for the women.

10 On the seventh day of his banquet the king was drinking and feeling happy, so he called in the seven eunuchs who were his personal servants, Mehuman, Biztha, Harbona, Bigtha, Abagtha, Zethar, and Carkas. 11 He ordered them to bring in Queen Vashti, wearing her royal crown. The queen was a beautiful woman, and the king wanted to show off her beauty to the officials and all his guests. 12 But when the servants told Queen Vashti of the king's command, she refused to come. This made the king furious.

13 Now it was the king's custom to ask for expert opinion on questions of law and order, so he called for his advisers, who would know what should be done. 14 Those he most often turned to for advice were Carshena, Shethar, Admatha, Tarshish, Meres, Marsena, and Memucan—seven officials of Persia and Media who held the highest offices in the kingdom. 15 He said to these men, “I, King Xerxes, sent my servants to Queen Vashti with a command, and she refused to obey it! What does the law say that we should do with her?”

16 Then Memucan declared to the king and his officials: “Queen Vashti has insulted not only the king but also his officials—in fact, every man in the empire! 17 Every woman in the empire will start looking down on her husband as soon as she hears what the queen has done. They'll say, ‘King Xerxes commanded Queen Vashti to come to him, and she refused.’ 18 When the wives of the royal officials of Persia and Media hear about the queen's behavior, they will be telling their husbands about it before the day is out. Wives everywhere will have no respect for their husbands, and husbands will be angry with their wives. 19 If it please Your Majesty, issue a royal proclamation that Vashti may never again appear before the king. Have it written into the laws of Persia and Media, so that it can never be changed. Then give her place as queen to some better woman. 20 When your proclamation is made known all over this huge empire, every woman will treat her husband with proper respect, whether he's rich or poor.”

21 The king and his officials liked this idea, and the king did what Memucan suggested. 22 To each of the royal provinces he sent a message in the language and the system of writing of that province, saying[c] that every husband should be the master of his home and speak with final authority.

Esther Becomes Queen

Later, even after the king's anger had cooled down, he kept thinking about what Vashti had done and about his proclamation against her. So some of the king's advisers who were close to him suggested, “Why don't you make a search to find some beautiful young virgins? You can appoint officials in every province of the empire and have them bring all these beautiful young women to your harem here in Susa, the capital city. Put them in the care of Hegai, the eunuch who is in charge of your women, and let them be given a beauty treatment. Then take the young woman you like best and make her queen in Vashti's place.”

The king thought this was good advice, so he followed it.

There in Susa lived a Jew named Mordecai son of Jair; he was from the tribe of Benjamin and was a descendant of Kish and Shimei. (B)When King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon took King Jehoiachin of Judah into exile from Jerusalem, along with a group of captives, Mordecai was among them. He had a cousin, Esther, whose Hebrew name was Hadassah; she was a beautiful young woman, and had a good figure. At the death of her parents, Mordecai had adopted her and brought her up as his own daughter.

When the king had issued his new proclamation and many young women were being brought to Susa, Esther was among them. She too was put in the royal palace in the care of Hegai, who had charge of the harem. Hegai liked Esther, and she won his favor. He lost no time in beginning her beauty treatment of massage and special diet. He gave her the best place in the harem and assigned seven young women specially chosen from the royal palace to serve her.

10 Now, on the advice of Mordecai, Esther had kept it secret that she was Jewish. 11 Every day Mordecai would walk back and forth in front of the courtyard of the harem, in order to find out how she was getting along and what was going to happen to her.

12 The regular beauty treatment for the women lasted a year—massages with oil of myrrh for six months and with oil of balsam for six more. After that, each woman would be taken in turn to King Xerxes. 13 When she went from the harem to the palace, she could wear whatever she wanted. 14 She would go there in the evening, and the next morning she would be taken to another harem and put in the care of Shaashgaz, the eunuch in charge of the king's concubines. She would not go to the king again unless he liked her enough to ask for her by name.

15 The time came for Esther to go to the king. Esther—the daughter of Abihail and the cousin of Mordecai, who had adopted her as his daughter; Esther—admired by everyone who saw her. When her turn came, she wore just what Hegai, the eunuch in charge of the harem, advised her to wear. 16 So in Xerxes' seventh year as king, in the tenth month, the month of Tebeth, Esther was brought to King Xerxes in the royal palace. 17 The king liked her more than any of the other women, and more than any of the others she won his favor and affection. He placed the royal crown on her head and made her queen in place of Vashti. 18 Then the king gave a great banquet in Esther's honor and invited all his officials and administrators. He proclaimed a holiday[d] for the whole empire and distributed gifts worthy of a king.

Mordecai Saves the King's Life

19 Meanwhile Mordecai had been appointed by the king to an administrative position. 20 As for Esther, she had still not let it be known that she was Jewish. Mordecai had told her not to tell anyone, and she obeyed him in this, just as she had obeyed him when she was a little girl under his care.

21 During the time that Mordecai held office in the palace, Bigthana and Teresh, two of the palace eunuchs who guarded the entrance to the king's rooms, became hostile to King Xerxes and plotted to assassinate him. 22 Mordecai learned about it and told Queen Esther, who then told the king what Mordecai had found out. 23 There was an investigation, and it was discovered that the report was true, so both men were hanged on the gallows. The king ordered an account of this to be written down in the official records of the empire.

Haman Plots to Destroy the Jews

Some time later King Xerxes promoted a man named Haman to the position of prime minister. Haman was the son of Hammedatha, a descendant of Agag.[e] The king ordered all the officials in his service to show their respect for Haman by kneeling and bowing to him. They all did so, except for Mordecai, who refused to do it. The other officials in the royal service asked him why he was disobeying the king's command; day after day they urged him to give in, but he would not listen to them. “I am a Jew,” he explained, “and I cannot bow to Haman.” So they told Haman about this, wondering if he would tolerate Mordecai's conduct. Haman was furious when he realized that Mordecai was not going to kneel and bow to him, and when he learned that Mordecai was a Jew, he decided to do more than punish Mordecai alone. He made plans to kill every Jew in the whole Persian Empire.

In the twelfth year of King Xerxes' rule, in the first month, the month of Nisan, Haman ordered the lots to be cast (“purim,” they were called) to find out the right day and month to carry out his plot. The thirteenth day of the twelfth month, the month of Adar, was decided on.

(C)So Haman told the king, “There is a certain race of people scattered all over your empire and found in every province. They observe customs that are not like those of any other people. Moreover, they do not obey the laws of the empire, so it is not in your best interests to tolerate them. If it please Your Majesty, issue a decree that they are to be put to death. If you do, I guarantee that I will be able to put 375 tons of silver into the royal treasury for the administration of the empire.”

10 The king took off his ring, which was used to stamp proclamations and make them official, and gave it to the enemy of the Jewish people, Haman son of Hammedatha, the descendant of Agag. 11 The king told him, “The people and their money are yours; do as you like with them.”

12 So on the thirteenth day of the first month Haman called the king's secretaries and dictated a proclamation to be translated into every language and system of writing used in the empire and to be sent to all the rulers, governors, and officials. It was issued in the name of King Xerxes and stamped with his ring. 13 Runners took this proclamation to every province of the empire. It contained the instructions that on a single day, the thirteenth day of Adar, all Jews—young and old, women and children—were to be killed. They were to be slaughtered without mercy and their belongings were to be taken. 14 The contents of the proclamation were to be made public in every province, so that everyone would be prepared when that day came.

15 At the king's command the decree was made public in the capital city of Susa, and runners carried the news to the provinces. The king and Haman sat down and had a drink while the city of Susa was being thrown into confusion.

1 Corinthians 11:17-34

The Lord's Supper(A)

17 In the following instructions, however, I do not praise you, because your meetings for worship actually do more harm than good. 18 In the first place, I have been told that there are opposing groups in your meetings; and this I believe is partly true. (19 No doubt there must be divisions among you so that the ones who are in the right may be clearly seen.) 20 When you meet together as a group, it is not the Lord's Supper that you eat. 21 For as you eat, you each go ahead with your own meal, so that some are hungry while others get drunk. 22 Don't you have your own homes in which to eat and drink? Or would you rather despise the church of God and put to shame the people who are in need? What do you expect me to say to you about this? Shall I praise you? Of course I don't!

23 For I received from the Lord the teaching that I passed on to you: that the Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took a piece of bread, 24 gave thanks to God, broke it, and said, “This is my body, which is for you. Do this in memory of me.” 25 (B)In the same way, after the supper he took the cup and said, “This cup is God's new covenant, sealed with my blood. Whenever you drink it, do so in memory of me.”

26 This means that every time you eat this bread and drink from this cup you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes. 27 It follows that if one of you eats the Lord's bread or drinks from his cup in a way that dishonors him, you are guilty of sin against the Lord's body and blood. 28 So then, you should each examine yourself first, and then eat the bread and drink from the cup. 29 For if you do not recognize the meaning of the Lord's body when you eat the bread and drink from the cup, you bring judgment on yourself as you eat and drink. 30 That is why many of you are sick and weak, and several have died. 31 If we would examine ourselves first, we would not come under God's judgment. 32 But we are judged and punished by the Lord, so that we shall not be condemned together with the world.

33 So then, my friends, when you gather together to eat the Lord's Supper, wait for one another. 34 And if any of you are hungry, you should eat at home, so that you will not come under God's judgment as you meet together. As for the other matters, I will settle them when I come.

Psalm 35:17-28

17 How much longer, Lord, will you just look on?
Rescue me from their attacks;
save my life from these lions!
18 Then I will thank you in the assembly of your people;
I will praise you before them all.

19 (A)Don't let my enemies, those liars,
gloat over my defeat.
Don't let those who hate me for no reason
smirk with delight over my sorrow.

20 They do not speak in a friendly way;
instead they invent all kinds of lies about peace-loving people.
21 They accuse me, shouting,
“We saw what you did!”
22 But you, O Lord, have seen this.
So don't be silent, Lord;
don't keep yourself far away!
23 Rouse yourself, O Lord, and defend me;
rise up, my God, and plead my cause.
24 You are righteous, O Lord, so declare me innocent;
don't let my enemies gloat over me.
25 Don't let them say to themselves,
“We are rid of him!
That's just what we wanted!”

26 May those who gloat over my suffering
be completely defeated and confused;
may those who claim to be better than I am
be covered with shame and disgrace.

27 May those who want to see me acquitted
shout for joy and say again and again,
“How great is the Lord!
He is pleased with the success of his servant.”
28 Then I will proclaim your righteousness,
and I will praise you all day long.

Nehemiah 12:27-13:31 , 1 Corinthians 11:3-16 , Psalms 35:1-16 , Proverbs 21:17-18

Today is the 17th day of Auuuuugust (Brian pronounces August a it a little weirdly and laughs abut it)…although I don’t think that’s really how you say it…but August. It’s the 17th day of August How are you in the middle of this month and at the end of this workweek? Hope you’re doing well. And no matter how you’re doing, this is the right place to find some serenity and some peace and some quiet and some stillness and allow God’s word to speak as we move forward and take the next step. And this week we’ve been reading from the Good News Translation. And, so, that’s what we’ll do. Nehemiah chapter 12 verse 27 through 13 verse 31 today.

Commentary:

Okay. So, we concluded the book of Nehemiah today with the dedication of the wall surrounding Jerusalem. And two choirs processed their way in opposite directions atop this newly completed wall. That must’ve been this moment of divine satisfaction for Nehemiah because it had been a very challenging and opposed task, but for all that they endured God had been faithful. With His guidance, the mission had been accomplished. And Nehemiah returned to Babylon to serve king Artaxerxes’s afterward, but he was later granted permission to return and when he did he discovered how quickly the people began to drift away from all that they had vowed before God. Eliashib, the supervisor of the temple storerooms allowed Tobia, who had been one of the chief instigators of intimidation and discouragement during the building of the wall, he gave him access to a large storeroom within the temple to use as he pleased, because they were family related. Additionally, the Levites and singers hadn’t been resourced, right? So, they had to leave their sacred jobs to go back to their fields just to survive and to provide for themselves and their families, which, of course, negatively affected the worship, the prescribed worship at the temple, which was already being neglected. And the people also began to ignore the Sabbath in favor of trade and commerce, which horrified Nehemiah. And finally, the people began to intermarry again with the surrounding nations. So, it’s like, Nehemiah left with everything moving in the right direction and he returned to find that everything was moving in the wrong direction, the very direction that had destroyed them in the first place. So, in the face of this discouragement, this is a good lesson for us as we are enduring because nothing stays. Like, we can get everything moving in the right direction, but it’s not going to stay that way unless it’s maintained in our own lives and in our own relationships. So, in the face of the discouragement of Nehemiah, he turned to God. He asked God to remember all that he had done out of a true heart on behalf of the people. And that shows us another important example in leadership. In the end, we can’t always influence people to do the right thing but we can do the right thing ourselves and we can follow God’s leadership by stewarding ourselves and taking responsibility for what He entrusted us to do. If we do this with a pure heart we can also pray the final words of Nehemiah. Remember this in my favor oh my God.

Prayer:

Father, we invite You into that. We invite You into everything that we encounter in Your word and ask Your Holy Spirit to speak to us, implant it in our lives. We have faced discouragement because we’ve tried to encourage people who do not want to make any kind of change. And often this exposes things in us, our controlling tendencies. We get bitter and angry that they will do what we want and then we realize, oh, we’re doing this to You too. That path won’t lead us anywhere. The path that Nehemiah shows us will. Although he couldn’t change everyone’s heart, he certainly could give his heart to You and follow You. And, so, we do this and we ask Lord that You remember the things that we’ve done out of a true and pure heart for Your people. And we pray this in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Hey __ from Alabama. August 14th. I don’t know if you caught Nehemiah 8 verse 9 and 10, when the people heard with the law are required they were so moved they began to cry. So, Nehemiah who was a governor __ and the Levites were explaining all this. The law told the people, this day is holy to the Lord your God. So, you are not to mourn or cry. Go home, have a feast, share your food and wine with those who don’t have enough. Today is holy to our Lord. So, don’t be sad. Catch this, the joy that the Lord gives you will make you strong. Did you catch that? __ and how much we need grace and mercy. Then let’s not mourn her cry all the time over our past. Know you are forgiven child of God. Today, this day, is holy because you have been made holy by the blood of Jesus. So, don’t be sad. Go have a feast. Go share with others because it’s not yours anyway. And remember this if nothing else, the joy that the Lord gives you will make you strong. So, let’s live this out in Jesus name. And one thing I want to ask, I know I’ve asked before but I appreciate your prayers. I go in tomorrow morning August 15th for an echocardiogram. A virus attacked my heart earlier this summer. It gave me congestive heart failure temporarily and I just ask that the doctors are just as amazed that this happened that they’re going to be amazed that I’m completely healed in Jesus name. Thank you. Love you. Appreciate your prayers.

Good morning dear brothers and sisters. Thank you so much for all that you do for the community, for the helping and praying for each other. I am reaching out to you folks to pray for my…my broken family. My daughter committed suicide three years ago and left four gorgeous children, two of who tried to resuscitate her and tried to help her. They were 13 and 16 of the time. They are floundering. I’ve had my granddaughter here this weekend and she was just heartbroken and said she feels like she has no home since her mom has passed. Doesn’t matter where she goes it just feels wrong. And now she found a boyfriend at the age of 16 and her boyfriend is 18 and he’s an atheist. And her dad and stepmom have kicked her out of the house because they feel like they need to live by the letter of the law as opposed to grace. And I know we do need to be obedient to the calling of the Lord and I just pray that you would reach out and pray for my daughter’s children. The oldest is into pornography and has a young girlfriend himself who he is living with. And these children are just lost and we all are. And my ex-husband, the day that he and I split up, threw something across the yard and said, for God’s damnation upon whatever. And I just feel like all of this, because I chose to leave husband has ultimately broken up the family in such a way. I’m remarried __ even a brand-new marriage. So, I pray that the peace of God of all understanding. He is the God of understanding…

Hi family. This is his little Sharif in Canada. I just finished listening to the community prayer and I just love the diversity of this community, don’t you? I love hearing the different voices. And it reminded me that we are supposed to be this way. We’re meant to be different from one another. That’s what makes the body of Christ beautiful. So, I just wanted to call in and remind you and myself that there is no place for comparison in the body of Christ because each of us is completely unique. I mean, how sad would it be if Victoria Soldier felt second-rate because she didn’t write poems like Blind Tony or if Blind Tony didn’t call in because he doesn’t sound or pray like Victoria Soldier. Everyone who is part of this community contributes something vital and they do it just by adding their DNA to the mix, those who don’t, and as much as those who do. So guys…ahhh…the truth is, each one of us is Jesus’ favorite. Did you know that? When we know and experience that, His specific and unique affection for each one of us, it frees us from measuring ourselves against someone else. So, I just want to thank you all for embracing me as I am, his little Sharif who prays with doodles and puzzles and whatever else. And I want to thank you for being exactly who you are. Please don’t try to be anyone else. We need you to be you and I like you the way you are. So, thank you so much for being a part of this community. I love you family, each one of you. God bless you. Bye-bye.
