Numbers 24-25

24 Balaam saw that ·the Lord wanted [L it was good in the eyes/sight of the Lord] to bless Israel, so he did not try to use any ·magic [divination] but looked toward the ·desert [wilderness]. When Balaam ·saw [L lifted his eyes and saw] the Israelites camped in their tribes, the Spirit of God ·took control of [L was on] him, and he gave this ·message [or oracle; or poem]:

“This is the ·message [utterance] of Balaam son of Beor,
the ·message [utterance] of a man ·who sees clearly [L whose eye is open];
this is the ·message [utterance] of a man who hears the words of God.
I see a vision from the Almighty,
and my eyes are open as I fall before him.
·Your tents are beautiful [L How beautiful/fair are your tents], people of Jacob!
·So are your homes [L Your dwellings], Israel!
Your tents spread out like ·valleys [wadis],
like gardens beside a river.
They are like ·spices [L aloes] planted by the Lord,
like cedar trees growing by the water.
Israel’s water buckets will always ·be full [or flow],
and their ·crops [L seed] will have plenty of water.
Their king will be greater than Agag [C perhaps a dynastic name of the Amalekites (Ex. 17:8–13); 1 Sam. 15:7–9, 32–33];
their kingdom will be very great.
God brought them out of Egypt;
they are ·as strong as [L like the horns of] a wild ox.
They will defeat their enemies
and break their enemies’ bones;
they will ·shoot [L strike] them with arrows.
Like a lion, they lie waiting to attack;
like a lioness, ·no one would be brave enough to wake [L who will rouse…?] them.
Anyone who blesses you will be blessed,
and anyone who curses you will be cursed [Gen. 12:3].”

10 Then Balak was angry with Balaam, and he ·pounded his fist [or struck his hands together]. He said to Balaam, “I called you here to curse my enemies, but you have continued to bless them three times. 11 Now go home! I said I would ·pay you well [make you wealthy], but the Lord has ·made you lose [denied you] your reward.”

12 Balaam said to Balak, “When you sent messengers to me, ·I told [L did I not tell…?] them, 13 ‘Balak could give me his ·palace [L house] filled with silver and gold, but I still cannot ·go against [transgress] the Lord’s commands. I could not do anything, good or bad, on my own, but I must say what the Lord says.’ 14 Now I am going back to my own people, but I will ·tell [L advise] you what these people will do to your people in the ·future [L later days].”

Balaam’s Final Message

15 Then Balaam gave this ·message [or oracle; or poem]:

“This is the ·message [utterance] of Balaam son of Beor,
the ·message [utterance] of a man ·who sees clearly [L whose eye is open];
16 this is the ·message [utterance] of a man who hears the words of God.
I know well the Most High God.
I see a vision from the Almighty,
and my eyes are open as I fall before him.
17 I see someone ·who will come someday [L but not now],
·someone who will come, but not soon [L I see him, but not near].
A star will come from Jacob;
a ·ruler [L scepter] will rise from Israel [C Saul, then David and his descendants, including the Messiah].
He will crush the heads of the Moabites
and smash the skulls of the sons of Sheth [C identity uncertain].
18 Edom will be conquered;
his enemy Edom will be conquered,
but Israel will grow ·wealthy [or valiant].
19 A ruler will come from the descendants of Jacob
and will destroy those left in the city.”

20 Then Balaam saw Amalek and gave this message:

“Amalek was the most important nation,
but Amalek will be destroyed at last [C the book of Esther tells the story of the final destruction of Amalek; Haman is a descendant of Agag; 24:7].”

21 Then Balaam saw the Kenites and gave this ·message [or oracle; or poem]:

“Your home is ·safe [enduring],
like a nest on a ·cliff [rock].
22 But you Kenites will be burned up;
·Assyria will [L How long will Assyria…?] keep you captive.”

23 Then Balaam gave this ·message [or oracle; or poem]:

“·No one [L Who…?] can live when God does this.
24 Ships will sail from the shores of ·Cyprus [Kittim]
and ·defeat [afflict] Assyria and Eber,
but they will also be destroyed.”

25 Then Balaam got up and returned home, and Balak also went on his way.

Israel Worships Baal at Peor

25 While the people of Israel were still camped at ·Acacia [L Shittim], the men began ·sinning sexually [to prostitute themselves] with Moabite women [C on the advice of Balaam who found another way to get his money; 31:16]. The women invited them to their sacrifices to their gods, and the ·Israelites [L people] ate food there and worshiped these gods. So the Israelites ·began to worship [L yoked themselves to] Baal of Peor, and the Lord was very angry with them.

The Lord said to Moses, “Get all the leaders of the people and ·kill [impale] them in open daylight in the presence of the Lord. Then the Lord will not be angry with the people of Israel.”

So Moses said to Israel’s judges, “Each of you must ·put to death [kill] your people who have become ·worshipers of [L yoked to] Baal of Peor.”

Moses and the Israelites were gathered at the entrance to the Meeting Tent, crying there. Then an ·Israelite man [L man of the sons/T children of Israel] brought a Midianite woman to his ·brothers [family] in plain sight of Moses and all the ·people [community; congregation; assembly]. Phinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, the priest, saw this, so he ·left the meeting [L rose up from the community/congregation/assembly] and ·got [L took in his hand] his spear. He followed the Israelite into his ·tent [vaulted/newlywed tent] and drove his spear through the belly of both the Israelite man and the Midianite woman [C while they were embracing]. Then the ·terrible sickness [plague] among the ·Israelites [L sons/T children of Israel] stopped.

This ·sickness [plague] had killed twenty-four thousand people.

10 The Lord said to Moses, 11 “Phinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, the priest, has saved the ·Israelites [L sons/T children of Israel] from my anger. He hates sin as much as I do. ·Since he tried to save my honor among them [L Because of his zeal in their midst], I will not kill them in my zeal. 12 So tell Phinehas that I am making my ·peace agreement [covenant/treaty of peace] with him. 13 He and his ·descendants [L seed] will ·always be priests [L have a covenant/treaty of eternal/perpetual priesthood], because he had ·great concern for the honor of [L passion/zeal for] his God. He ·removed the sins of the Israelites so they would belong to God [L provided atonement for the sons/T children of Israel].”

14 The Israelite man who was ·killed [L struck] with the Midianite woman was named Zimri son of Salu. He was the leader of a ·family [ancestral clan] in the tribe of Simeon. 15 And the name of the Midianite woman who was ·put to death [L struck] was Cozbi daughter of Zur, who was the chief of a Midianite ·family [ancestral clan].

16 The Lord said to Moses, 17 “·The Midianites are your enemies [Harrass the Midianites], and you should ·kill [L strike] them. 18 They have already ·made you their enemies [harrassed you], because they tricked you at Peor and because of their sister Cozbi, the daughter of a Midianite leader. She was the woman who was killed when the ·sickness [plague] came because the people sinned at Peor.”

Luke 2:1-35

The Birth of Jesus

At that time, Augustus Caesar sent an ·order [decree] that all people in the ·countries under Roman rule [empire; Roman world] must ·list their names in a register [register for taxation]. ·This was the first registration; it was taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria [or This was the first census while Quirinius was governor of Syria; or This census occurred before Quirinius was governor of Syria]. And all went to their own towns to be registered.

So Joseph left Nazareth, a town in Galilee, and went to the town of Bethlehem in Judea, known as the town of David [C Bethlehem was David’s hometown]. Joseph went there because he was from the ·family [L house and family line] of David. Joseph registered with Mary, to whom he was ·engaged [pledged to be married; see 1:27] and who was now pregnant. While they were in Bethlehem, the time came for Mary to have the baby, and she gave birth to her first son. She wrapped the baby ·with pieces of cloth [in cloths; T in swaddling clothes] and laid him in a ·feeding trough [T manger], because there ·were no rooms [was no space/room] left in the ·inn [or guest room (of a private residence); or caravan shelter].

Shepherds Hear About Jesus

·That night [L At night], some shepherds were [living out] in the fields ·nearby [L in that region/place] watching their ·sheep [L flock]. Then an angel of the Lord stood before them. The glory of the Lord ·was shining around [surrounded] them, and they became very frightened. 10 The angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. [L …for/because] I am bringing you good news that will ·be a [or bring] great joy to all the people. 11 Today your Savior was born in the town of David. He is ·Christ [the Messiah], the Lord. 12 This ·is how you will know him [will be the sign for you]: You will find a baby wrapped in ·pieces of cloth [cloths; T swaddling clothes] and lying in a ·feeding trough [T manger].”

13 ·Then [L And suddenly] a ·very large group [or great army] of angels from heaven ·joined [appeared with] the first angel, praising God and saying:

14 “Give glory to God in ·heaven [the highest place/heaven],
and on earth let there be peace among the people ·who please God [or he favors; L of his pleasure/approval].”[a]

15 When the angels left them and went back to heaven, the shepherds said to each other, “Let’s go to Bethlehem. Let’s see this thing that has happened which the Lord has told us about.”

16 So the shepherds went quickly and found Mary and Joseph and the baby, who was lying in a ·feeding trough [T manger]. 17 When they had seen him, they ·told [spread the word about; let people know] what the angels had said about this child. 18 Everyone [L who heard] ·was amazed [wondered; marveled] at what the shepherds said to them. 19 But Mary ·treasured [kept; preserved] these things and ·continued to think about them [L pondered/considered them in her heart]. 20 Then the shepherds went back to their sheep, ·praising [glorifying] God and ·thanking [praising] him for everything they had seen and heard. It had been just as the angel had told them.

21 When ·the baby was eight days old [L eight days were fulfilled; Gen. 17:12; Lev. 12:3], he was circumcised [1:59] and was named Jesus, the name given by the angel before ·the baby began to grow inside Mary [L he was conceived in the womb].

Jesus Is Presented in the Temple

22 When the ·time came [L days were fulfilled] for ·Mary and Joseph to do what the law of Moses taught about being made pure [L their purification according the law of Moses; C an animal sacrifice and ritual cleansing forty days after the birth of a son; see Lev. 12:2–8], they took Jesus [L up] to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord. 23 ([L Just as] It is written in the law of the Lord: “Every ·firstborn male [L male who opens the womb; C an idiom for a firstborn] shall be ·given [set apart; consecrated; L called holy] to the Lord” [Ex. 13:2].) 24 Mary and Joseph also went to offer a sacrifice, as the law of the Lord says: “You must sacrifice two ·doves [or turtledoves] or two young pigeons [Lev. 5:11; 12:8].”

Simeon Sees Jesus

25 [Now; L And behold] In Jerusalem ·lived [L was] a man named Simeon who was ·a good man [righteous; just] and ·godly [devout; reverent]. He was waiting for the ·time when God would take away Israel’s sorrow [restoration/consolation of Israel; Is. 40:1] and the Holy Spirit was ·in [or upon] him. 26 ·Simeon had been told [L It had been revealed to him] by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he saw ·the Christ promised by the Lord [L the Lord’s Messiah/Anointed One]. 27 The Spirit led Simeon to the Temple. When ·Mary and Joseph [L the parents] brought the ·baby [child] Jesus to the Temple to do [L for him] what ·the law said they must do [the custom of the law required], 28 Simeon took the baby in his arms and ·thanked [praised; blessed] God:

29 “Now, Lord, you can let me, your servant,
·die [L depart; be dismissed] in peace ·as you said [L according to your word].
30 With my own eyes I have seen your salvation [Is. 52:10],
31 which you prepared ·before [in the presence of] all ·people [nations; people groups].
32 It is a light ·for the Gentiles to see [L of revelation for the Gentiles/nations; Is. 42:6; 49:6]
and ·an honor [the glory] for your people, ·the Israelites [L Israel].”

33 Jesus’ father and mother were amazed at what Simeon had said about him. 34 Then Simeon blessed them and said to ·Mary [L his mother], “·God has chosen this child [L Look/T Behold, this one is destined/appointed] to cause the fall and rise of many in Israel. ·He will be a sign from God that many people will not accept [L …and to be a sign that is spoken against] 35 so that the thoughts of many [L hearts] will be made known. And ·the things that will happen will make your heart sad, too [L a sword will pierce your own soul; C Mary will experience deep sorrow over the death of Jesus].”

Psalm 59

A Prayer for Protection

For the director of music. To the tune of “Do Not Destroy.” A miktam [C perhaps “inscription”] of David when Saul sent men to ·watch David’s house [L the house] to kill him [1 Sam. 19:11–17].

59 God, ·save [protect] me from my enemies.
·Protect me [Give me refuge] from those who ·come [rise] against me.
·Save [Protect] me from those who do evil
and ·save me from [give me victory over] ·murderers [the bloodthirsty].

Look, they are waiting to ambush ·me [my life; Prov. 1:11].
·Cruel [Defiant; Strong] people attack me,
but I have not sinned or ·done wrong [transgressed], Lord.
I have done nothing wrong, but they ·are ready to attack me [L run and get ready].
Wake up to ·help [meet] me, and look.
You are the Lord God ·All-Powerful [Almighty; of Heaven’s Armies; T of hosts], the God of Israel.
·Arise [L Awake] and ·punish [visit] ·those people [L all the nations].
Do not give those traitors any ·mercy [grace]. ·Selah [Interlude]

They come back at ·night [evening].
Like dogs they ·growl [make a commotion] and ·roam around [surround] the city.
Notice what ·comes [bubbles up] from their mouths.
·Insults [L Swords] come from their lips,
because they say, “Who’s listening?”
But, Lord, you laugh at them [2:4];
you ·make fun of [ridicule] all ·of them [L the nations].

God, my strength, I ·am looking to [keep watch for] you,
because God is my ·defender [refuge].
10 My God ·loves [is loyal to] me, and he goes in front of me.
He will help me ·defeat [L look on] my enemies.
11 Lord, our ·protector [L shield], do not kill them, or my people will forget.
With your power ·scatter them [make them wander] and ·defeat them [L bring them down].
12 They sin by what they say;
they sin with their ·words [L lips].
They curse and tell lies,
so let their pride ·trap [capture] them.
13 ·Destroy [Annihilate] them in your anger;
·destroy [annihilate] them ·completely [L so they will be no more]!
Then they will know
that God rules over ·Israel [L Jacob]
and to the ends of the earth. ·Selah [Interlude]

14 They come back at ·night [evening].
Like dogs they ·growl [make a commotion]
and ·roam around [surround] the city.
15 They wander about looking for food,
and they ·howl [grumble] if they ·do not find enough [are not satisfied].
16 But I will sing about your strength.
In the morning I will sing about your ·love [loyalty].
You are my ·defender [refuge],
my place of safety in ·times of trouble [L the day of distress].
17 God, my strength, I will sing ·praises [a psalm] to you.
God, my ·defender [refuge], you are the God who ·loves [is loyal to] me.

Numbers 22:21-23:30 ~ Luke 1:57-80 ~ Psalm 58:1-11 ~ Proverbs 11:12-13

Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible.  Today is March 15th.  I’m Brian. It’s great to be here with you today. I am buckled in and ready to go. The mic is obviously working.  Got a nice steamy cup of coffee to my left and our readings for today right in front of me, so I guess we’re ready.  Are you ready?  Here we go!  We’re reading from the Expanded Bible this week.  Numbers chapter 22, verse 21 through 23, verse 30.

Commentary

There is a fascinating story taking place in the book of Numbers today, blowing away the stereotypes of these books.  Like Leviticus and Numbers, there is a stereotype about these books that ‘oh man, if you can make it through Numbers, you can make it through anything.’  That is not true.  I mean, look at the things that have come out of this story.  And it is just a part of the same story.

So the children of Israel are wandering in the wilderness at this point because they’ve doubted that they could take the promised land, and so God said you can have what you want, basically.  It could have been different, but a whole generation will stay out here in the wilderness for 40 years.  So they are wandering around, a million people, and so they have to ask for passage to get from one place to another because they are sort of locked in and other countries like Edom are not letting them pass through.  So they have had to fight some.  There is just no place, so they are wandering around.  And when they are forced into fighting they win. So they have a little bit of territory, but they are not able to settle in.

The Moabites are freaking out about the Israelites as well.  If you kind of want to picture where Moab and Edom are, you would have to be looking at a map of modern day Israel and locate the Dead Sea.  That is hard to miss.  So there is the Sea of Galilee and the Jordan River runs south from the Sea of Galilee and empties into the Dead Sea and this is borderlands.  So to the south of the Dead Sea, moving down into the Negev, down into the desert would have been Edom, and bordering to the north would have been Moab.  So the children of Israel are in the wilderness on that side of the Jordan River. They haven’t been able to cross the Jordan River into the land of Canaan that will become their land, if God’s promise holds true, so they are on the other side of the Jordan and both countries that would let them go through to the north won’t let them go through, so they have to go all the way around.

So the King Balak has called on this powerful, prophetic kind of person named Balaam to put a curse on the children of Israel.  Balaam does the right thing and says when the first emissaries come, “Just chill out here overnight.  I’m going to go see what God has to say because I can’t do anything God doesn’t tell me to do.”  And he comes back and says, “I can’t do it.”  And he sends the emissaries home.  Balak then sends more important emissaries and Balaam says the same thing, “Wait and I’ll see what God says.”  God says, “Go with them, but only say what I tell you to say.”

So this is what God tells Balaam, but somewhere in there, there is a thread inside of Balaam’s heart that tells him ‘I could get rich.  Maybe this could go good for me.’  He is planning to obey the Lord, but there may be opportunity here to cash in and he begins to think about that, which sets up everything that comes next, which is really fascinating stuff.

So Balaam gets up the next morning and he leaves with the Moabite leaders, but there is an angel following along.  The angel stands in front of the road and only Balaam’s donkey can see this angel.  So the donkey moves out of the way, which forces him to go off the road.  Balaam can’t figure out why his donkey is all of a sudden going off the road, so he smacks him a couple of times and gets it back on the road.  They are going on and there is a narrow path and the angel is blocking the path again and so the donkey tries to get out of the way and it squishes Balaam’s foot. So Balaam is obviously frustrated and probably has a few choice things to say to the donkey, smacks it, gets it back on the road.  They move along and then there is like a gateway and there is nowhere for the donkey to move out of the way when it sees the angel.  So the donkey just sits down and Balaam is so mad that he can hardly see straight.

We know this because the donkey starts talking to Balaam and Balaam starts talking back to the donkey, not even realizing ‘wait a second, donkeys don’t talk.’ They are having a conversation before he can even get his rage under control.  The donkey sits down.  Balaam jumps off the donkey.  He is so mad that he is smacking it and hitting it and probably cursing it.  And the donkey talks, “What did I do?  What have I done to make you hit me these three times?” And then we have the answer.  “You have made me look foolish.”  “I wish I had a sword in my hand.  I would kill you right now.”

This conversation happens and the angel is revealed and Balaam sees the error of his ways.  It is really interesting what happened here, because Balaam has all the right words. “I can only say what God tells me to say,” and yet he’s worried about looking stupid in front of the king’s emissaries.  How often do we do the same thing?  How often do we play with our freedoms?  How often are we more interested in how this is going to make us look than actually going and obeying the Lord and saying only what he has you say?  The book of Numbers isn’t so dry after all, is it? Because now it is a mirror into our souls.

As the story progresses, Balaam and King Balak do meet and King Balak is doing everything Balaam is telling him, offering sacrifices, giving him space to hear from the Lord.  And Balaam, he’s got the message now.  There is an angel around and he has a sword and it doesn’t really matter whether I look foolish or not, I would rather look foolish than look dead.  I’m only going to say what God tells me to say.  So he comes back and says, “I can’t.  These people are blessed by God and I can’t.”

So Balak goes to another place and shows him another place.  “Can you do it from here?”  Sacrifices are given.  God speaks.  “No, I can’t,” Balaam tells Balak.  “I can’t. These people are blessed.”

Balak then says, “Well, then if you can’t curse them, then just don’t bless them like you’ve been doing.”  “Let’s go over here and look one more place and see if you can curse them from there.”

Man, if we look at this behavior we have to see our own lives in this. How many times have we wanted something that the Lord has been like, “No, that’s not healthy for you. No.”  And so we’ll go around the other side.  “What about from this angle?  Can’t you see, Lord, that this path would be good for me?  Can’t you see, Lord?”  He’s like, “No, that wouldn’t be healthy for you.”  So we go around to the other side.  “What about from over at this angle?  Can’t you see?”  And most of the time what that means is we’re going to do it anyway, no matter what the Lord says.  Usually the way that we do this first is to try to talk ourselves out of the fact that the Lord said anything at all.  And yet, the book of Numbers is showing us we’re not the only ones who have had this line of reasoning.  We’re not the only ones who have ever done this.  We have a story from thousands of years ago that shows us this has been going on all along and we are continuing to follow this same story, this same script.  And this same script will not get us anywhere but the wilderness and we will never get out of it on our own.  There can be a promised land and it can be just miles away.  We can even see it but we can’t get to it on our own.  We can only follow God there.

So may we examine our own hearts and behaviors today because they are kind of exposed.  They have kind of come flashing out of the book of Numbers and here we are with some things to think about.  How are we looking at what other people think of us as more important than what God is telling us?  How are we trying to negotiate with God by looking at everything from so many angles until we hope to wear him down so he can give us what we want because we are going to do it anyway?  That won’t lead us anywhere, which uniquely speaks directly into this season that we’re in right now, this season that runs us into Easter time known as Lent, a season that has been used for lots of things, but has deep and profound meaning.  Certainly lots of people use it for diet, “I’m going to give up sugar.”  That’s fine if you’re giving it out to God.  That’s great. But this is a season where we are giving up everything to God, not just the chocolate bar.  We’re saying my life is before you open and I am asking that you set it right.  I am asking that you take away from me the things that I’ve been negotiating and trying to bulldoze my way into that don’t belong in my life.  I’m inviting you.  I’m willing to give that up forever.  I’m willing to give up anything that you want and I’m willing for anything to be rearranged how you want it.  I need to hear from you and walk with you or there is no hope for me ever moving from this wilderness into a promised land.

Prayer

That is our prayer, Lord.  We see that this has been going on a long time.  We see this in lives that are our forbearers’ spiritually.  We read our own mail in the scriptures, even today.  So as we’re in this season and we’re contemplating the price of sin and the cost of sin and what the sin has done, the devastation that it has wrought on this planet and in our own lives, we’re realizing that this is not only a costly endeavor, but you paid the cost and set us free from it. This doesn’t have to be a part of our story going forward.  It’s just that we choose it.  So in this season, we are inviting you to come invade us, change us, align us so that we can be true and have true intimacy with you and begin eternity now instead of waiting for something to begin that is already happening.  We are here.  We are alive.  This moment is contained with an eternity.  It’s time to get with the program.  So we offer our very lives to you as living sacrifices and invite you to indwell us. Come, Holy Spirit.  We pray in the name of Jesus, amen.

Numbers 22:21-23:30

Balaam’s Donkey Speaks

21 Balaam got up the next morning and put a saddle on his donkey. Then he went with the Moabite leaders. 22 But God became angry because Balaam went, so the ·angel [messenger] of the Lord stood in the road to ·stop [challenge] Balaam. Balaam was riding his donkey, and he had two servants with him. 23 When the donkey saw the ·angel [messenger] of the Lord standing in the road with a drawn sword in his hand, the donkey left the road and went into the field. Balaam ·hit [struck] the donkey to force her back on the road.

24 Later, the ·angel [messenger] of the Lord stood on a narrow path between two vineyards, with walls on both sides. 25 Again the donkey saw the angel of the Lord, and she walked close to one wall, ·crushing [squeezing; scraping] Balaam’s foot against it. So he ·hit [struck] her again.

26 The ·angel [messenger] of the Lord went ahead again and stood at a narrow place, too narrow to turn left or right. 27 When the donkey saw the ·angel [messenger] of the Lord, she lay down under Balaam. This made him so angry that he ·hit [struck] her with his stick. 28 Then the Lord made the donkey talk, and she said to Balaam, “What have I done to make you ·hit [strike] me three times?”

29 Balaam answered the donkey, “You have made me look foolish! I wish I had a sword in my hand! I would kill you right now!”

30 But the donkey said to Balaam, “·I am [L Am I not…?] your very own donkey, which you have ridden for years. Have I ever done this to you before?”

“No,” Balaam said.

31 Then the Lord opened the eyes of Balaam and let Balaam see the ·angel [messenger] of the Lord, who was standing in the road with his sword drawn in his hand. Then Balaam bowed facedown on the ground.

32 The ·angel [messenger] of the Lord asked Balaam, “Why have you ·hit [struck] your donkey three times? I have stood here to ·stop [challenge] you, because what you are doing is wrong. 33 The donkey saw me and turned away from me three times [C it was more spiritually sensitive than Balaam]. If she had not turned away, I would have killed you by now, but I would have let her live.”

34 Then Balaam said to the ·angel [messenger] of the Lord, “I have sinned; I did not know you were standing in the road to stop me. If I am wrong, I will go back.”

35 The ·angel [messenger] of the Lord said to Balaam, “Go with these men, but say only what I tell you.” So Balaam went with Balak’s leaders.

36 When Balak heard that Balaam was coming, he went out to meet him at Ar in Moab, which was beside the Arnon, at the edge of his ·country [boundary]. 37 Balak said to Balaam, “·I had asked you before [L Did I not send for you…?] to come quickly. Why didn’t you come to me? ·I am [L Am I not…?] able to ·reward you well [give you wealth].”

38 But Balaam answered, “I have come to you now, but I can’t say just anything. I can only say what God tells me to say.”

39 Then Balaam went with Balak to Kiriath Huzoth. 40 Balak offered cattle and sheep as a sacrifice and gave some meat to Balaam and the leaders with him.

41 The next morning Balak took Balaam to Bamoth Baal; from there he could see the edge of the ·Israelite camp [L people].

Balaam’s First Message

23 Balaam said to Balak, “Build me seven altars here, and prepare seven bulls and seven ·male sheep [rams] for me.” Balak did what Balaam asked, and they offered a bull and a ·male sheep [ram] on each of the altars.

Then Balaam said to Balak, “Stay here beside your burnt offering [Lev. 1:1–17] and I will go. If the Lord comes to me, I will tell you whatever he shows me.” Then Balaam went to a ·higher place [or barren height].

God came to Balaam there, and Balaam said to him, “I have prepared seven altars, and I have offered a bull and a ·male sheep [ram] on each altar.”

The Lord ·told Balaam what he should say [L put a word in the mouth of Balaam]. Then the Lord said, “Go back to Balak and ·give him this message [L thus you will speak].”

So Balaam went back to Balak. Balak and all the leaders of Moab were still standing beside his burnt offering [Lev. 1:1–17] when Balaam gave them this ·message [or oracle; or poem]:

“Balak brought me here from Aram;
the king of Moab brought me from the eastern mountains.
Balak said, ‘Come, put a curse on the people of Jacob for me.
Come, call down evil on the people of Israel.’
But ·God has not cursed them,
so I cannot curse them [L how can I curse what God has not cursed?].
·The Lord has not called down evil on them,
so I cannot call down evil on them [L How can I call down evil on/denounce what the Lord has not called down evil/denouced?].
I see them from the top of the ·mountains [cliffs];
I see them from the hills.
I see a people who live alone,
who think they are different from other nations [Ex. 19:5–6].
10 No one can number the ·many people [L dust; Gen. 13:16; 28:14] of Jacob,
and no one can count a ·fourth [or dust cloud] of Israel.
Let me die like ·good [virtuous; upright] people,
and let me end up like them!”

11 Balak said to Balaam, “What have you done to me? I brought you here to curse my enemies, but you have only blessed them!”

12 But Balaam answered, “·I must [L Must I not…?] say what the Lord ·tells me to say [L put in my mouth].”

Balaam’s Second Message

13 Then Balak said to him, “Come with me to another place, where you can also see the people. But you can only see part of them, not all of them [C perhaps he could curse a part of Israel]. Curse them for me from there.” 14 So Balak took Balaam to the field of Zophim, on top of Mount Pisgah. There Balak built seven altars and offered a bull and a ·male sheep [ram] on each altar.

15 So Balaam said to Balak, “Stay here by your burnt offering [Lev. 1:1–17], and I will meet with God over there.”

16 So the Lord came to Balaam and ·told him what to say [L put a word in his mouth]. Then he said, “Go back to Balak and say ·such and such [L thus].”

17 So Balaam went to Balak, where he and the leaders of Moab were standing beside his burnt offering [Lev. 1:1–17]. Balak asked him, “What did the Lord say?”

18 Then Balaam gave this ·message [or oracle; or poem]:

“Stand up, Balak, and listen.
Hear me, son of Zippor.
19 God is not a human being, and he will not lie.
He is not a human, and he does not change his mind.
What he says he will do, ·he does [L will he not do it?].
What he promises, ·he makes come true [L will he not fulfill it/make it come true?].
20 He ·told [commanded] me to bless them,
so I cannot change the blessing.
21 He ·has found [observes] no wrong in the people of Jacob;
he saw no ·fault [trouble] in Israel.
The Lord their God is with them,
and they praise their King.
22 God brought them out of Egypt;
they are ·as strong as [L like the horns of] a wild ox.
23 No ·tricks [divination] will work on the people of Jacob,
and no magic will work against Israel.
People now say about ·them [L Jacob],
‘Look what God has done for Israel!’
24 The people rise up like a lioness;
they get up like a lion.
Lions don’t rest until they have eaten prey,
until they have drunk ·their enemies’ blood [L the blood of corpses].”

25 Then Balak said to Balaam, “You haven’t cursed these people, so at least don’t bless them!”

26 Balaam answered Balak, “·I told [L Did I not tell…?] you before that I can only do what the Lord tells me.”

Balaam’s Third Message

27 Then Balak said to Balaam, “Come, I will take you to another place. Maybe ·God will be pleased [L it will be right in the eyes/sight of God] to let you curse them from there.” 28 So Balak took Balaam to the top of Peor, the mountain that looks over the ·desert [wasteland; or Jeshimon].

29 Balaam told Balak, “Build me seven altars here and prepare for me seven bulls and seven ·male sheep [rams].” 30 Balak did what Balaam asked, and he offered a bull and a ·male sheep [ram] on each altar.

Luke 1:57-80

The Birth of John

57 When it was time for Elizabeth to give birth, she had a ·boy [L son]. 58 Her neighbors and relatives heard how ·good [greatly merciful] the Lord was to her, and they rejoiced with her.

59 When the baby was eight days old, they came to circumcise him [Gen. 17:12]. They ·wanted [were about] to name him Zechariah because this was his father’s name, 60 but his mother said, “No! He will be named John.”

61 The people said to Elizabeth, “But no one in your family has this name.” 62 Then they made ·signs [gestures; motions] to his father to find out what he would like to name him [C indicating that Zechariah was not only mute but also deaf].

63 Zechariah ·asked [motioned] for a writing tablet and wrote, “His name is John,” and everyone ·was surprised [marveled; was amazed]. 64 Immediately ·Zechariah could talk again [L his mouth was opened and his tongue freed], and he began ·praising [blessing] God. 65 All their neighbors ·became alarmed [were afraid/in awe], and in all the ·mountains [hill country] of Judea people continued talking about all these things. 66 The people who heard about them ·wondered [L kept/pondered them in their hearts], saying, “What will this child [turn out to] be?” because the [L hand of the; C a metaphor for empowering presence] Lord was with him.

Zechariah Praises God

67 Then Zechariah, John’s father, was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied:

68 “·Let us praise [L Blessed be] the Lord, the God of Israel,
because he has ·come to help his people and has given them freedom [L visited and accomplished redemption for his people].
69 He has ·given us a powerful Savior [L raised up a horn of salvation for us; C referring to the horn of a powerful animal—a metaphor for strength; 1 Sam. 2:1, 10; Ps. 132:17; Ezek. 29:21]
·from the family [L in the house] of God’s servant David.
70 [L …just as] He said that he would do this
through [L the mouth of] his holy prophets who lived long ago:
71 He promised he would save us from our enemies
and from the ·power [L hand; C indicating controlling power or oppression] of all those who hate us.
72 He said he would give mercy to our ·ancestors [forefathers]
and that he would remember his holy ·promise [covenant].
73 ·God promised [L The oath that he swore to] Abraham, our father [Gen. 22:16–18],
74 that he would ·save [rescue] us from the ·power [hand; v. 71] of our enemies
so we could serve him without fear,
75 being holy and ·good [righteous] before God as long as we live.
76 “Now you, child, will be called ·a [or the] prophet of the Most High God.
[L For] You will go before the Lord to prepare his ·way [or paths; Mal. 3:1].
77 You will ·make his people know that they will be saved [L give his people the knowledge of salvation]
by having their sins forgiven [Jer. 31:34].
78 ·With [or Because of] the ·loving [tender] mercy of our God,
·a new day from heaven will dawn upon us [L the sunrise/dawn from heaven will visit us; C a metaphor for the Messiah; Mal. 4:2].
79 It will shine on those who ·live [dwell; sit] in darkness,
in the shadow of death [Is. 9:2].
It will guide ·us [L our feet] into the path of peace [Is. 59:8].”

80 And so the child grew up and became strong ·in spirit [or in the Spirit]. John lived in the ·desert [wilderness] until the time when he ·came out to preach [appeared; was revealed] to Israel.

Psalm 58

Unfair Judges

For the director of music. To the tune of “Do Not Destroy.” A miktam [C perhaps “inscription”] of David.

58 Do you ·rulers [or silent ones; or gods; C sometimes spiritual beings such as angels are called “gods” in the OT; 82:1] really say what is ·right [righteous]?
Do you judge people ·fairly [with integrity]?
No, in your heart you plan evil;
you ·think up [dispense] ·violent crimes [violence] in the land.
From ·birth [L the womb], evil people ·turn away [go astray] from God;
they wander off and tell lies ·as soon as they are born [L from the belly; C another word for the womb; 51:5].
They ·are [L have poison/venom] like ·poisonous [venomous] snakes,
like deaf cobras that ·stop [plug] up their ears
so they cannot hear the music of the snake charmer
no matter how ·well he plays [wisely/skillfully he enchants].

God, break the teeth in their mouths!
·Tear out [Uproot] the fangs of those lions, Lord!
Let them ·disappear [vanish] like water that flows away.
Let them ·be cut short like a broken arrow [L draw their arrows like they are cut off].
Let them be like ·snails [slugs] that ·melt [dissolve] as they move [C snails leave a slime as they move].
Let them be like a ·child born dead [stillborn] who never saw the sun.
His anger will blow them away alive
faster than burning thorns can heat a pot [C likely a reference to quick retribution].
10 ·Good [Righteous] people will be glad when they see ·him get even [vengeance].
They will wash their feet in the blood of the wicked [Is. 63:1–6; Rev. 14:19–20; 19:13–14].
11 Then people will say,
“There really are ·rewards [fruits] for ·doing what is right [the righteous].
There really is a God who judges the ·world [earth; land].”

12 People ·without good sense [who lack sense/heart] ·find fault with [despise; belittle] their neighbors,

Numbers 21:1-22:20 ~ Luke 1:26-56 ~ Psalm 57:1-11 ~ Proverbs 11:9-11

Today is the 14th day of March.  Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible.  I am Brian and it’s great to be here with you for another day.  Man, we are like already almost in the center of the month of March and it is a blooming delight in the rolling hills of Tennessee.   This is a great time of year actually, where all of the hills, they turn fertile and green and lush and new life springs forth everywhere, bursting forth.  So if you’re in the Northern Hemisphere, no matter where you are in the world, it is coming.  It is coming.  I know those of you in the Southern Hemisphere are moving toward autumn which is also a beautiful time of year.  But it is beautiful here in the rolling hills of Tennessee.

So let’s dive into our reading for today.  We’ve been reading from the Expanded Bible this week.  Numbers chapter 21, verse 1 through 22, verse 20 today.

Commentary

Yesterday we started the gospel of Luke, which is the third gospel in the scriptures and we watched Zechariah before the Lord burning incense when he encounters the angel Gabriel and he is promised a son.  We talked about it yesterday.  He reaction was, “How can I be sure this is going to happen?”  Today the angel Gabriel has another visit to a maiden named Mary in the Galilee.  Her response is quite a bit different.

She has some questions because Gabriel is telling her she is going to have a baby.  She is engaged to be married, so she can assume that she is probably going to have a baby, so what is he talking about?  She has to process that while she is processing the fact the there is a man talking to her who is claiming to be an angel of God.  So her response is saying, “How am I going to have a baby? I haven’t been with a man.”  That is an honest response, but as the angel begins to explain to her, she begins to grow curious and believed maybe this could be really happening  Then she realizes this is really happening and God is calling her.  So rather than ‘how can I be sure this will happen,’ her response becomes ‘I am the Lord’s servant.  Let this happen to me as you say.’

It’s two different enunciations, two different announcements of a foretold child, two very different responses to the news.  Where are we on the continuum between the two?  Because the Holy Spirit is here leading and guiding us. The Holy Spirit ranks higher than the angel Gabriel.  So when the Lord speaks to us by his Holy Spirit or through his word, what is our response?  ‘How can I be sure this is going to happen?’ or ‘I am the Lord’s servant.  Let this happen as you say.’  Food for thought today.  May we take some time to observe our responses and our reactions.  Where do we go first?  Prove it or I believe you?

Prayer

Holy Spirit, we invite you into that.  There are not very many days that go by that you are not challenging us in some way, in some soft spot.  But we welcome this.  We’ve resisted it for too long and now we’re embracing it because you’re pulling us toward the narrow path that leads to life.  If we will follow you, we will follow the path that leads to wholeness. We admit we’ve ignored plenty, but we want the kind of intimacy and collaboration that allows us from our hearts to say ‘whatever you say, that’s fine.  As long as we’re together.  As long as we’re navigating life together, whatever you say.’  So Father, we say that.  Whatever you say, because whatever that is, it is right.  It is true.  And it is holy.  So come Holy Spirit as we contemplate our reactions to your presence in our lives. And we ask this in the name of Jesus, amen.

Community Prayer Requests and Praise Reports

Good morning Daily Audio Bible family.  James, the teacher in LA.  I just finished listening to the March 9th podcast and I heard Tito in California. Tito, I haven’t heard you in a while, but it was good to hear your voice.  I’ve missed you.  And Tito, I just gotta echo what you said for Dean.  Dean, actually I kind of wanted to call in when I heard your prayer request the first time, but I wasn’t sure because I feel sometimes like I overstep because I do it a lot in my personal life when I talk to these people.  But Dean, let me just assure you, if you’ve ever felt like you don’t fit in, you’re definitely in the right community because I think there are a lot of us here in the Daily Audio Bible who have felt that way. And I think a lot of people just feel that way in life.  They don’t want to talk about it because it makes you feel weird.  But Dean, I can assure you, I spent years feeling like I didn’t fit in with groups of friends here and there and even more, especially at church.  I didn’t grow up in church.  I didn’t grow up religious.  I grew up the opposite of religious.  There are probably a lot of us also here at the Daily Audio Bible.   But you know what?  When you find people who love Jesus and the Spirit of God is in them, they open up to you because you have the Spirit in you too.  We’re family.  We love you, Dean.  You fit in because you are part of Christ, no matter how you look or how advanced your whole thing is.  And that’s it.  You are welcome.  Bye-bye.

Hey Brian and Daily Audio Bible family.  I’ve been listening fairly loyally since before Ezekiel was born, I believe, and probably a good year before then.  It’s been such a good experience to have that strength given to me. Early in the morning is when I usually do it.  My pridefulness has probably kept me from doing this for six months, maybe eight, and that is I just finally have to reach out.  Listening to a commentary by a man named Ray Stedman, who I just love here and how it made me really think how far out on a limb have we, my wife and I taken, how far out we’ve gotten.  She took a position in Texas.  She didn’t have a job.  We didn’t really seek advice.  We were just praying that God would make it happen or not happen.  And if he wanted it, she would get it.  Well, she got it and I have a position in Fort Bragg and I’m not able to leave it.  So I need to get a position in Dallas or she needs to be able to come back here.  What we’re praying is for God’s will to be revealed and be revealed quickly.  We’ve been geographically separated for two years, no, not two years.  One year and two years would be devastating.  I’ve missed a portion of my daughter’s life and a year of marriage with my wife.  I pray for the family to pray to the Lord and him reveal his will and we get that going more.  I desperately need his will because it is so good.  I need to soar on it.  I want my family to be united so I can read the Bible with my daughter.  My daughter needs me.  I love you guys.  Thank you for your strength.  Amen. Oh, by the way, maybe I didn’t mention it.  My name is Al.  Bye-bye.

Good morning Daily Audio Bible family.  This is Prophetic Intercessor Rising Up from North Carolina.  I’m a first-time caller and am just so blessed. I’m a first-time listener this year and have been so blessed by the word and by your prayers and by your prayer requests.  I wanted to just be obedient to the Holy Spirit this morning and to call in because there have been so many times where he has prompted me to call and I haven’t obeyed because the enemy talks to you and convinces you that it isn’t the thing to do.  But I want to call in and pray specifically for Jacqueline, Salvation is Mine in California.  I was listening to the March 4th Community Prayer and your prayer so touched me. I wanted to obey God’s Holy Spirit and to call in and to pray for you.  I truly woke up this morning, was so heavy-laden with my own problems that when I started listening to your heart, it just lifted me from my low place to stand in the gap for you.  I just want to let you know that at those times where we are at our lowest, God has surrounded us with intercessors that are lifting up their collective shields of faith to quench the fiery darts that are coming against us.  I just want to pray that God would strengthen you in this hour, that he would let you know that you are never alone, for he said in his word that lo, he is with us always, even to the ends of the very earth. So I pray for you that God’s angels of the highest ranking order would surround you and would minister peace to your heart, minister health to your body, and to let you know that you are never alone for God is with you.  He will never forsake you.  Even in those times where we cannot trace him and we cannot feel him, that you would trust his character.  That you would trust his will for your life, for he said that he has a good will and a good plan for your life, and thoughts of peace and to prosper you and to bring you to an expected end.  So I come against the cancer that has riddled your body.  I come against the infirmity that has come against you, for God has given us the power to bind it and loose it, so we bind the hopelessness, we bind the…

Hi DAB family.  This is Joyce from California calling in to thank Brian for his life-giving commentaries, in particular the ones from January 7th about God keeping his promises to us whether we have faith to believe it or not, January 26th where you taught us about Jesus being fully human, March 3rd and 4th where you taught us about the power of faith.  I encourage everyone to go back and listen to those messages together if you haven’t had a chance to do it.  This is what I learned.  That God has a dream for each of our lives and that even my unbelief cannot deter that dream and blessing, that Jesus was fully human and when we received him as Lord and Savior, we became fully human too because he lives within us.  Thus, we each carry within us all the resources on heaven and earth and we are able to solve and overcome any difficulty that life brings.  To live this way, though, requires faith and like little Gigi prayed, Lord, I think I believe, help my unbelief, and it is done for us.  O Lord God, how we praise you, for you are the author and finisher of our faith. Bless the members of our DAB community. Heal us and pour out your restoration through our lives into this world.  Your kingdom come, your will be done.  In the precious name of Jesus Christ we pray.  Amen.  Love you family.  Have a wonderful and blessed day.

Hi beautiful family.  This is Drew from the Bay Area.  Hey, I’m calling in this morning.  I’ll get to the point.  I’ll try to talk a little bit faster.  I look back on my life and God showed me this morning that praying and my faith that he has given me, it is all about him and what he has done.  It wasn’t about my feelings at the time because I felt lost and lonely.  I hopped from church to church trying to find a fit for my family.  I prayed for God to help me love a woman that I could not love. She couldn’t even love herself, and he did it.  I prayed that God would prove to me that he knows my every thought and he proved it to me. I prayed that God would save my mother and that I would be willing to do whatever it takes.  He showed me that it wasn’t up to me.  What my mother suffered was to prevent her from suffering later. Family, it doesn’t matter what you feel. It matters what God does.  We’re to trust him.  That is what this is all about.  Coming together in faith and trusting him, learning to trust him.  And I’ve learned over and over again.  He took away lust.  He took away my desire for alcohol.  He gave me a healthy lust for my ex-wife.  He brought me away from my ex-wife for a better life.  He brought me away from a bad job to a better job.  He takes care of me.  He sustains me.  He will do the same for you.  He’ll heal you like he healed Gigi.  Gigi, I’m celebrating with you.  I prayed for you.  I’m praying for all you, family.  I love you. We are one together in Christ. Never forget that.  It’s not what we do.  It’s what Christ did for us.  I love you, family.

This is Candace from Oregon.  I need your retroactive prayers.  My husband is probably not going to make it.  Has had a heart attack and open heart surgery.  They can’t really even close him back up right now, so there is some kind of chance there could be a miracle, so you all are the ones I would ask to pray on top of the other 2000 here praying for him.  Meanwhile, I just ask for his comfort, in Jesus’ name.  And for that for our family.  Thank you.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Tuesday March 14, 2017 (NIV)

Numbers 21:1-22:20

War with the Canaanites

21 The Canaanite king of Arad lived in the ·southern area [Negev]. When he heard that the Israelites were coming on the road to Atharim, he attacked them and captured some of them. Then the Israelites made ·this promise [a vow] to the Lord: “If you will ·help us defeat these people [L give this people into our hands], we will ·completely destroy [devote to the Lord] their cities.” The Lord listened to the Israelites, and he let them defeat the Canaanites. The Israelites ·completely destroyed [devoted to the Lord] the Canaanites and their cities, so the place was named Hormah [C “Completely Destroyed”; “Devoted to the Lord”].

The Bronze Snake

The Israelites left Mount Hor and went on the road toward the ·Red [or Reed] Sea, in order to go around the country of Edom. But the people became impatient on the way and ·grumbled at [L spoke against] God and Moses. They said, “Why did you bring us out of Egypt to die in this ·desert [wilderness]? There is no bread and no water, and we hate this terrible food!”

So the Lord sent them ·poisonous [L burning] snakes; they bit the people, and many of the ·Israelites [L people from Israel] died. The people came to Moses and said, “We sinned when we ·grumbled at [spoke against] you and the Lord. Pray that the Lord will take away these snakes.” So Moses prayed for the people.

The Lord said to Moses, “Make a bronze snake, and put it on a pole. When anyone who is bitten looks at it, that person will live.” So Moses made a bronze snake and put it on a pole. Then when a snake bit anyone, that person looked at the bronze snake and lived [2 Kin. 18:4; John 3:14].

The Journey to Moab

10 The ·Israelites [L sons/T children of Israel] went and camped at Oboth. 11 They went from Oboth to Iye Abarim, in the ·desert [wilderness] east of Moab. 12 From there they went and camped in the Zered ·Valley [Wadi]. 13 From there they went and camped across the Arnon, in the ·desert [wilderness] just inside the Amorite country. The Arnon is the border between the Moabites and the Amorites. 14 That is why the Book of the Wars of the Lord [C a source now lost] says:

“ … and Waheb in Suphah, and the ·ravines [wadis],
the Arnon, 15 and the slopes of the ·ravines [wadis]
that lead to the settlement of Ar.
These places are at the border of Moab.”

16 The Israelites went from there to Beer; a well is there where the Lord said to Moses, “Gather the people and I will give them water.”

17 Then the Israelites sang this song:

“·Pour out water [Spring up], well!
Sing ·about [or to] it.
18 Princes dug this well.
·Important men [Leaders of the people] made it.
With their scepters and poles, they dug it.”

The people went from the ·desert [wilderness] to Mattanah. 19 From Mattanah they went to Nahaliel and on to Bamoth. 20 From Bamoth they went to the valley of Moab where the top of Mount Pisgah looks over the ·desert [wilderness].

Israel Kills Sihon and Og

21 The Israelites sent messengers to Sihon, king of the Amorites, saying, 22 “Let ·us [L me] pass through your country. We will not go through any fields of grain or vineyards, or drink water from the wells. We will travel only along the ·king’s road [King’s Highway; 20:17] until we have passed through your ·country [boundaries].”

23 But King Sihon would not let the Israelites pass through his ·country [boundaries]. He gathered his whole army together, and they marched out to meet Israel in the ·desert [wilderness]. At Jahaz they fought the Israelites. 24 Israel ·killed [L struck with the sword] the king and captured his land from the Arnon River to the Jabbok River. They took the land as far as the ·Ammonite border [L border of the sons of Ammon], which was strongly defended. 25 Israel captured all the Amorite cities and lived in them, taking Heshbon and all the towns around it. 26 Heshbon was the city where Sihon, the Amorite king, lived. In the past he had fought with the king of Moab and had taken all the land from his hand as far as the Arnon.

27 That is why the poets say:

“Come to Heshbon
and rebuild it;
·rebuild [establish] Sihon’s city.
28 A fire ·began in [L went out from] Heshbon;
flames came from Sihon’s city.
It destroyed Ar in Moab,
and it ·burned [or swallowed] the Arnon highlands.
29 ·How terrible for [T Woe to] you, Moab!
The people of Chemosh are ruined.
His sons ran away
and his daughters were captured
by Sihon, king of the Amorites.
30 But we defeated those Amorites.
We ruined their towns from Heshbon to Dibon,
and we destroyed them as far as Nophah, near Medeba.”

31 So Israel lived in the land of the Amorites.

32 After Moses sent spies to the town of Jazer, they captured ·the towns around it [its villages], forcing out the Amorites who lived there.

33 Then the Israelites went up the road toward Bashan. Og king of Bashan and his whole army marched out to meet the Israelites, and they fought at Edrei.

34 The Lord said to Moses, “Don’t be afraid of him. I will hand him, his whole army, and his land over to you. Do to him what you did to Sihon, the Amorite king who lived in Heshbon.”

35 So the Israelites ·killed [L struck] Og and his sons and all his army; no one was left alive. And they took his land [Deut. 1:4; 3:1–7; Ps. 135:11; 136:20].

Balak Sends for Balaam

22 Then the ·people [L sons/T children of] of Israel went to the plains of Moab, and they camped near the Jordan River across from Jericho.

Balak son of Zippor saw everything the Israelites had done to the Amorites. And Moab ·was scared of [dreaded] so many Israelites; truly, Moab was terrified by them.

The Moabites said to the elders of Midian, “·These people [L This community/assembly/congregation] will ·take [lick up] everything around us like an ox ·eating [licking] grass.”

Balak son of Zippor was the king of Moab at this time. He sent messengers to Balaam son of Beor at Pethor, near the Euphrates River in ·his native land [or the land of Amaw]. Balak said, “A nation has come out of Egypt that covers the land. They have ·camped [L settled] next to me, and they are too powerful for me. So come and put a curse on them. Maybe then I can defeat them and ·make them leave [drive them from] the area. I know that if you bless someone, the blessings happen, and if you put a curse on someone, it happens.”

The elders of Moab and Midian went with ·payment [L fee for divination] in their hands. When they found Balaam, they told him what Balak had said.

Balaam said to them, “Stay here for the night, and I will tell you what the Lord tells me.” So the Moabite leaders stayed with him.

God came to Balaam and asked, “Who are these men with you?”

10 Balaam said to God, “The king of Moab, Balak son of Zippor, sent them to me with this message: 11 ‘A ·nation [people] has come out of Egypt that ·covers [spreads over] the land. So come and put a curse on them, and maybe I can fight them and force them out of my land.’”

12 But God said to Balaam, “Do not go with them. Don’t put a curse on those people, because I have blessed them.”

13 The next morning Balaam ·awoke [rose] and said to Balak’s leaders, “Go back to your own country; the Lord has refused to let me go with you.”

14 So the Moabite leaders went back to Balak and said, “Balaam refused to come with us.”

15 So Balak sent other leaders—this time there were more of them, and they were more ·important [distinguished]. 16 They went to Balaam and said, “Balak son of Zippor says this: Please don’t let anything stop you from coming to me. 17 I will ·pay you very well [make you wealthy; honor you], and I will do what you say. Come and put a curse on these people for me.”

18 But Balaam answered Balak’s servants, “King Balak could give me his palace full of silver and gold, but I cannot ·disobey [transgress] the Lord my God in anything, great or small. 19 You stay here tonight as the other men did, and I will find out what more the Lord tells me.”

20 That night God came to Balaam and said, “These men have come to ask you to go with them. Go, but only do what I tell you.”

Luke 1:26-56

An Angel Appears to Mary

26 During Elizabeth’s sixth month of pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel [1:19] to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, 27 to a virgin. She was ·engaged to marry [pledged to; C engagement was a binding contract between two families and could only be broken by divorce] a man named Joseph ·from the family [a descendent; L from the house] of David. ·Her [L The virgin’s] name was Mary. 28 The angel came to her and said, “·Greetings [Hello; L Rejoice; C a common greeting]! ·The Lord has blessed you and is with you [or …favored one, the Lord is with you].”

29 But Mary was ·very startled [disturbed; perplexed; troubled] by what the angel said and wondered what ·this greeting might mean [sort of greeting this was].

30 The angel said to her, “Don’t be afraid, Mary; [L for; because] ·God has shown you his grace [L you have found favor/grace with God]. 31 ·Listen [L Look; T Behold]! You will ·become pregnant [L conceive in your womb] and give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus [Is. 7:14]. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of ·King David, his ancestor [L his father David]. 33 He will ·rule [reign] over the ·people [L house] of Jacob forever, and his kingdom will never end [2 Sam. 7:13, 16; Dan. 7:14, 27].”

34 Mary said to the angel, “How ·will [can] this happen since ·I am a virgin [L I have not known a man (sexually)]?”

35 The angel said to Mary, “The Holy Spirit will come ·upon [over] you, and the power of the Most High will ·cover [overshadow] you. For this reason the ·baby will be holy and [holy one to be born] will be called the Son of God. 36 ·Now [L And look/T behold] Elizabeth, your relative, ·is also pregnant with [has also conceived] a son ·though she is very old [in her old age]. ·Everyone thought she could not have a baby, but she has been pregnant for six months. [L And this is the sixth month for the woman they called barren!] 37 ·God can do anything […because nothing is impossible with God; or …because no word/message from God will ever fail; Gen. 18:14; Jer. 32:17]!”

38 Mary said, “[L Look; T Behold] I am the ·servant [bondservant; T handmaid] of the Lord. Let this happen to me ·as you say [according to your word]!” Then the angel ·went away [left her].

Mary Visits Elizabeth

39 [L In those days] Mary got up and went quickly to a town in the hills of Judea [C from Galilee in the north to southern Israel, about three or four days journey by foot]. 40 She ·came to [entered] Zechariah’s house and greeted Elizabeth. 41 When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the unborn baby ·inside her [in her womb] ·jumped [leaped; kicked], and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. 42 She cried out in a loud voice, “·God has blessed you [L You are blessed] ·more than any other woman [L among women], and ·he has blessed the baby to which you will give birth [L blessed is the fruit of your womb]. 43 [L But] Why ·has this good thing happened to me [am I so honored], that the mother of my Lord comes to me? 44 [L For look/T behold] When I heard ·your voice [L the sound of your greeting], the baby inside ·me [my womb] ·jumped [leaped; kicked] with joy. 45 ·You are blessed because you [L Blessed is she who has] believed that what the Lord said would ·really happen [be fulfilled].”

Mary Praises God

46 Then Mary said,

“My soul ·praises [exalts; glorifies; magnifies] the Lord [1 Sam. 2:1–10];
47 my ·heart [spirit] rejoices in God my Savior [Ps. 35:9],
48 because he has ·shown his concern for [noticed; looked favorably on] his ·humble [lowly] servant girl [1 Sam. 1:11].
[L For look/T behold] From now on, all ·people [L generations] will ·say that I am [call me] blessed [Ps. 138:6],
49 because the ·Powerful [Mighty] One has done great things for me.
His name is holy.
50 ·God will show his mercy [L His mercy is/continues] ·forever and ever [L to generations and generations]
to those who ·worship and serve [L fear; reverence] him [Ps. 103:17].
51 He has done mighty deeds ·by his power [L with his arm; C a metaphor for strength].
He has scattered the people who are proud
·and think great things about themselves [or in the schemes they devise; L in the thoughts/intentions of their hearts].
52 He has brought down ·rulers [the powerful] from their thrones
and ·raised up [exalted] the ·humble [lowly].
53 He has filled the hungry with good things [Ps. 107:9]
and sent the rich away ·with nothing [empty-handed].
54 He has helped his servant, the people of Israel,
·remembering to show them [mindful of his] mercy
55 as he promised to our ancestors,
to Abraham and to his ·children [descendants; L seed] forever [Gen. 17:7, 19].”

56 Mary stayed with Elizabeth for about three months and then returned home.

Psalm 57

A Prayer in Troubled Times

For the director of music. To the tune of “Do Not Destroy.” A miktam [C perhaps “inscription”] of David when he ·escaped [fled] from Saul in the cave [C likely a reference to 1 Sam. 22:1–5, but possibly 1 Sam. 24].

57 Be ·merciful [gracious] to me, God; be ·merciful [gracious] to me
because I ·come to you for protection [L seek refuge].
Let me ·hide [be protected; L seek refuge] under the shadow of your wings [Ruth 2:12; Matt. 23:37]
until the ·trouble [destruction] has passed.

I cry out to God Most High,
to the God who ·does everything for [fulfills his purpose for; or avenges] me.
He sends help from heaven and ·saves me [gives me victory].
He ·punishes [reproaches; scorns] those who ·chase [trample on; hound; snap at] me. ·Selah [Interlude]
God sends me his ·love [loyalty] and ·truth [faithfulness].

I lie down among lions [C his enemies];
who are aflame for human prey.
Their teeth are like spears and arrows,
their tongues as sharp as swords.

God is ·supreme [exalted] over the ·skies [heavens];
his ·majesty [glory; C his manifest presence] ·covers [L is over] the earth.

They set a ·trap [net] for ·me [L my feet].
I am ·very worried [bowed down].
They dug a pit ·in my path [L before me],
but they fell into it themselves. ·Selah [Interlude]

My heart is ·steady [steadfast; ready], God; my heart is ·steady [steadfast; ready].
I will sing and ·praise [play a psalm for] you.
Wake up, my ·soul [or glory].
Wake up, harp and lyre!
I will wake up the dawn.
Lord, I will ·praise [thank] you among the ·nations [peoples];
I will ·sing songs of praise about [play a psalm for] you to all the nations.
10 Your ·love [loyalty] ·reaches to [is greater than] the ·skies [heavens],
your ·truth [faithfulness] to the clouds.
11 God, you are ·supreme [exalted] above the ·skies [heavens].
Let your glory [C manifest presence] be over all the earth.

Numbers 19:1-20:29 ~ Luke 1:1-25 ~ Psalm 56:1-13 ~ Proverbs 11:8

Today is the 13th day of March.  Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible.  I am Brian and it’s great to be here with you.  So we crossed the threshold of a new week yesterday and now it is time to live into that week as we walk with God.  One of the ways we do that is to orient ourselves and our hearts to him through his word and just allow the serenity to wash over us.  To step away, to have this little space, this little global campfire, this little space that we have where it is peaceful and all the obligations that are out in front of us this week, they can be put aside for this brief period of time as we feed our souls.

This week we’re reading from the Expanded Bible and we’ll move back out with the children of Israel into the wilderness and then when we get to the New Testament we will begin a new book.  But first, Numbers chapter 19, verse 1 through 20, verse 29.

Introduction of a New Book (New Testament)

We finished the book or gospel of Mark yesterday which is the second of the gospels in the Bible, which brings us to the book of Luke.  The gospel of Luke has a little more of an intriguing story regarding its place in history.  Luke is the third of what is known as the synoptic gospels – those being Matthew, Mark and Luke – and they are called the synoptic gospels because they are very similar in their composition, very similar in the way they are laid out and the stories that they tell about Jesus, so similar in fact that it is widely believed among biblical scholars that one could not exist without the other, that they were written at different times, but they were used as source material for each other.

I personally like the book of Luke a lot because I believe it is written tight and concise and it flows well and contains all of the known details of the time.  Scholarly opinion is that Luke not only wrote the book of Luke, but he also wrote the book of Acts.  There are, however, some differing points of view as to when this book was actually written. A number of leading scholars believe that the gospel of Mark was the first of the synoptic gospels.  In fact, most scholars believe that.  And then Matthew and Luke borrowed some of the source material as they were writing the history of the gospel of Jesus Christ from Mark.

There is a scholarly trend right now that refers to a lost source text that is being called Q.  It wasn’t a narrative like the gospels that we have in the Bible on the life of Jesus, but was probably a collection of all the sayings of Jesus that anyone who actually heard them could remember.  This supposed text is believed to have provided more of the source material for all of the synoptic gospels and that this explains some of the harmony between them. Unfortunately, there is no way to know this for certain.  We don’t have the text although the arguments for its existence are legitimate and very compelling.

Because of all this, placing the gospel of Luke in history is one of the things that is up for debate.  Luke as well as Acts were written to a man named Theophilus.  One school of thought is that Luke was written somewhere after AD 70. Part of this comes because of Jesus’ quote in Luke about the destruction of the temple.  Luke is a little more detailed than any of the other synoptic gospels and some conclude that Luke may have had knowledge of this.  The more compelling reason for a later dating is the tightness of the manuscript.  It reads as if some time has passed, some theology and tradition has been set forth and order for the early accounts of Christ’s life have been accepted and ratified.

On the flip side of that, there are scholars that date Luke between AD 37 and AD 70 because there was a high priest in Israel between AD 37 and the early 40s named Theophilus.  If this is true, Luke was written between four and eight years after the crucifixion of Jesus and would make it one of the earliest Christian manuscripts that we have.  Either way, Luke was inspired by the Spirit of the living God and it was written to a Gentile audience in that it shows the gospel of Jesus is inclusive and not only a Jewish religion.  It includes the whole world and welcomes all who call upon the name of the Lord into the family.  So with that, we begin the book of Luke, chapter 1, verses 1 through 25.

Commentary

As we begin the book of Luke today, it’s an interesting story, the story of the coming of John the Baptist and John’s father, who was a priest named Zechariah, and Zechariah is to burn incense before the Lord in the temple, which he does.  His group or his division is on duty to serve in the temple and this is an honor that he has received by lot and he takes the fire pans in before the Lord to burn the incense before the Lord when he encounters the angel.

The angel tells him he is going to have a son in his old age and that he will be a prophetic voice.  Echoes of the promise to Abraham and Sarah and the prophesy or the words that the angel speaks to Zechariah is that this child will turn the hearts of the children back to their fathers and the hearts of the fathers back to the children. This is a prophesy found in the book of Malachi.  In fact, for practicing Jewish people at the time of Zechariah, when this is happening, these are the last words of the Bible.  So it’s not like a priest like Zechariah doesn’t understand what is being said.  It is what is being said is too big for him to comprehend.  What is being said is that there is a new prophetic voice to pick up the story where it was left off four centuries before, echoes of the time the children of Israel spent in slavery in Egypt and a new freedom is coming to people who have enslaved themselves by rejecting God.

So it is a big deal what is being said here and all of this is not lost on Zechariah.  He is a priest.  He studies the Torah.  He understands this.  He knows the words of the prophets.  His response is interesting.  “How can I be sure this is going to happen?” is what he tells the angel, as if he has not been given signs enough.  He is A: Standing in the presence of God burning incense when an angel appears to give him words about the future.  And B:  All of the things that would go into that, the fact that he is elderly and his wife is barren, the fact that the prophesy is so big that it is maybe too big for him to be involved with at all.  Echoes of our own lives.

Very soon as we move forward in the gospel of Luke we will see that this same angel has another visit and this visit will be to a peasant girl up in the Galilee area named Miriam.  We know her as Mary.  And her response to the angel’s overwhelming story about a child that she will have that will be the son of God, a bigger prophesy, a more encompassing comprehensive prophesy given to a peasant girl will be received radically different than a prophesy to a very educated and mature priest of the highest God.  Let’s watch the juxtaposition of their responses and look for our own hearts in them.

Prayer

Father, we invite you into that as we move forward.  How is it that we respond when you speak?  How is it that we react when you call?  Is it always too big for us?  Have we put a ceiling on what we can do or what we can be involved in in your service?  Come Holy Spirit, we pray in the mighty name of Jesus.  Amen.

Community Prayer Requests and Praise Reports

Hey everybody.  This is Pelham M. from Birmingham.  I used to say from Cullman.  Now it’s Birmingham.  It’s been Birmingham for a while.  You can tell I haven’t gotten a lot of sleep because I’ve got a 10-week-old at home that God blessed us with.  I was calling because the Holy Spirit was tugging at me like he does.  “Time to call.”  “It’s time to call.”  Max, your call, if you’re out there, Max, that was what really pushed me to where it was time to call.  Actually, it was Hebrews13@proton.com. I forgot your name, but it starts with an M, your call is what prompted me to call about his call.  That is how the network happens.  Man, the depression.  I faced it. I faced it with substance abuse and it’s because you’re a powerful soldier in God’s army and there is something trying to take you out of the game.  When you can see through that smoke and see through that noise and just connect with God, put your eyes on him.  And if you feel like you can’t do that, just connect with someone that is connecting with God and you’re going to make it through this, man.  There are people all over the world praying for you. Here I am at the pizza truck in Birmingham, AL thinking about you and what you’re going through and it was time for me to call anyway.  Molly is doing great.  The baby is doing great.  The pizza truck is doing great.  Life is different when you have a baby.  It changes all the focus.  Pretty exciting stuff.  I think I’m about to run out of time.  I just wanted to call and touch base.  Blind Tony, where are you.  Hadn’t heard from you.  Have a great day everyone.

Hello.  This is the Greatest Trucker from Way out West.  I’m coming to my Daily Audio Bible family with a prayer request that is more for my brother-in-law Steve J.  He is back there in Missouri and he has pneumonia.  He’s suffering with it pretty bad.  He’s in the ICU.  My sister texted me that he had to have a CT scan that showed blood clots in his lungs and pneumonia.  They started him on blood thinners and he’s getting breathing treatments and he’s very weak.  He’ll get real food today and more antibiotics and one __________ of oxygen before he goes home and he might have to be on it for a while, so would like for this family to pray for Steve J. back there in Missouri, as they call it Missoura back there.  The __________ prayers of this family are extremely powerful.  We’ve seen that many, many times.  I love you all and I pray for your prayer requests and I’m asking you to pray for this one for me today.  In Jesus’ precious name, for the healing of Steve J. in Missouri.  Thank you.

Hi DAB family.  This is Janine from Virginia.  I just want to thank you, Brian and Jill, for the lifechanging ministry of DAB.  I don’t even want to think about a day without listening to Brian share God’s word.  His commentary, insight into that day’s scripture reading is just amazing. It gives me so much to ponder and pray about.  DAB family, my heart…I just love you all so much.  I have so many thanks to give.  Thank you Jeanie F., my sister who is such a treasure, who never gives up on me. So many people to thank for your prayers for me, for my brother and my mother.  A shout-out to my sister Jeanie F. from Chatham, VA, for her steadfast friendship, prayers and encouragement.  Just can’t thank you enough, Jeanie.  Thank you Abbie from Washington State, and Katheryn from Maryland for your prayer.  It touched my heart so much.  Thank you for your kindness and love.  And Mason, thank you for your prayer for me.  DAB is Jesus with skin on.  Your example of being a godly man is priceless to me.  Christine from Northern Virginia, your words profoundly touched me. Thank you, dear, for reaching out with truth from God’s word.  I will be in touch with you.  Pastor Gene, I glean so much from your messages.  Blind Tony, thank you for your poetry.  It is always wonderful.  Thank you, brother.  Lisa the Encourager, I appreciate your words, your encouragement is always encouraging. And Candace from Oregon, beautiful songs.  Keep sharing.

Good morning Daily Audio Bible family.  This is Debbie in Des Moines, driving on my way to work.  I got car noise here.  It’s been really strong in my heart to share how God sustained me years ago during a really difficult time, so here it goes.  My husband left me with four children.  The place I was living in with my daughter was burnt down to the ground.  I lost my dog during that same month that all of this happened.  They got rid of my position.  But wouldn’t you know…and I didn’t have renter’s insurance because when you’re poor you don’t think of renter’s insurance.  Wouldn’t you know that the person who came from Red Cross was from my church.  Not only that, she also oversaw low income housing, so we immediately, we never had to go to a shelter or anything.  She immediately took us and put us into housing.  I’ve never been on government assistance before and I had to do that. So I went in and wouldn’t you know the case worker was a lady from my church that I had never met before. Don’t worry about your finances. Don’t worry when you feel the enemy has taken everything from you because it is a cleansing.  Think of it as a cleansing.  There is nothing that we need on earth.  God sustains us through everything.  So don’t worry about finances.  Don’t worry about what you’re going to eat, where you’re going to live. Worry about nothing.  God will sustain you.  He sustained me in miraculous ways and continues to do so. So please, don’t worry.  God loves you and he shows that every day.  Bye guys.

Hi DAB family.  This is Michelle, military wife from Virginia.  I’ve called over the last couple of years, but I haven’t called in in a long time and I just want to tell you how inspiring it is to hear the praise reports and the prayer requests coming in.  I called in a few years ago regarding our son who has Asperger’s and he has dealt with legal issues and also just tremendous amount of demonic oppression and we have been standing in the gap for him for years for total deliverance.  I had asked that you guys please cover our son.  He’s had some breakthrough and it still continues to be a fight for his life. Any prayers that our beautiful Lord and Savior gives, the Heavenly Father through the power of the Spirit are greatly appreciated.  Love you guys so much.  Thank you for everything.  Alright, have a great day, DAB family.  Bye.

Hi.  I just wanted to thank Stephanie from North Carolina for calling in.  I don’t usually listen to the prayer requests.  I usually just listen to the Bible reading.  I haven’t really related to a lot of Christians mostly because I feel like the weird one.  I see things sometimes when I pray.  I feel like God shows me things and most of the people that I have been around have rejected that and kind of think that is not from God.  I believed, you know, praying in tongues and that’s not been popular either, but I have just stepped away from church and kind of been on my own little island searching for God and I felt really alone because I feel like God shows me things.  I couldn’t get to my phone fast enough to turn it off when it got to the prayer requests and when I heard Stephanie’s call come in, it made me realize I’m not so alone after all.  So Stephanie, thank you for calling in.  I know you said it was hard for you to call in and as hard as that was, it is just as hard for me to call in because I don’t like things like this either, but I just wanted to call and say thank you.  Bless you.  Bye-bye.

Numbers 19-20

The Offering for Cleansing

19 The Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “These are the ·teachings [statutes; ordinances; requirements] that the Lord commanded. Tell the ·Israelites [L sons/T children of Israel] to get a young red ·cow [T heifer] that does not have ·anything wrong with it [L a defect and is without a blemish] and that has never ·been worked [L worn a yoke]. Give the ·cow [T heifer] to Eleazar the priest; he will take it outside the camp and ·kill [slaughter] it in his presence. Then Eleazar the priest must put some of its blood on his finger and sprinkle it seven times toward the front of the Meeting Tent. The whole ·cow [T heifer] must be burned while he watches; the skin, the meat, the blood, and ·the intestines [L its dung] must all be burned. Then the priest must take a cedar stick, a hyssop branch, and a red string [C the redness of the heifer and these objects probably represent blood] and throw them onto the burning ·cow [T heifer]. After the priest has washed himself and his clothes with water, he may come back into the camp, but he will be unclean [C in a ritual sense] until evening. The man who burns the ·cow [T heifer] must wash himself and his clothes in water; he will be unclean until evening.

“Then someone who is clean [C in a ritual sense] will collect the ashes from the ·cow [T heifer] and put them in a clean place outside the camp. The ·Israelites [L community/congregation/assembly of the sons/T children of Israel] will keep these ashes to use in the cleansing water, in a ·special ceremony to cleanse away sin [L sin offering; or purification offering; Lev. 4:3]. 10 The man who collected the ·cow’s [T heifer’s] ashes must wash his clothes and be unclean until evening. This is a lasting ·rule [statute; ordinance; requirement] ·for the Israelites [L in their midst] and for the ·foreigners [resident aliens] among them.

11 “Those who touch a dead person’s body will be unclean [C in a ritual sense] for seven days. 12 They must ·wash themselves with the cleansing [purify themselves with the] water on the third day and on the seventh day; then they will be clean. But if they do not ·wash themselves [purify themselves] on the third day and the seventh day, they cannot be clean. 13 If those who touch a dead person’s body ·stay unclean [do not purify themselves] and go to the Lord’s ·Holy Tent [Tabernacle], it becomes unclean; they must be cut off from Israel. If the cleansing water is not sprinkled on them, they are unclean and will stay unclean.

14 “This is the ·teaching [instruction; law] about someone who dies in a tent: Anyone in the tent or anyone who enters it will be unclean [C in a ritual sense] for seven days. 15 And every open jar or pot without a cover becomes unclean. 16 If anyone is ·outside [L in the open field] and touches someone who was killed by a sword or who died [C a natural death], or if anyone touches a human bone or a grave, that person will be unclean for seven days.

17 “So you must use the ashes from the burnt sin [or purification; Lev. 4:3] offering to make that person clean [C in a ritual sense] again. Pour ·fresh [running; L living] water over the ashes into a jar. 18 A clean person must take a hyssop branch and dip it into the water, and then he must sprinkle it over the tent and all its objects. He must also sprinkle the people who were there, as well as anyone who touched a bone, or the body of someone who was killed, or a dead person, or a grave. 19 The person who is clean must sprinkle this water on the unclean people on the third day and on the seventh day. On the seventh day they will ·become clean [be purified]. They must wash their clothes and take a bath, and they will be clean that evening. 20 If any who are unclean do not become ·clean [purified], they must be cut off from the ·community [assembly; crowd]. Since they were not sprinkled with the cleansing water, they stay unclean, and they could make the Lord’s ·Holy Tent [Tabernacle] unclean. 21 This is a lasting ·rule [statute; ordinance; requirement]. Those who sprinkle the cleansing water must also wash their clothes, and anyone who touches the water will be unclean until evening. 22 Anything an unclean person touches becomes unclean, and whoever touches it will be unclean until evening.”

Moses Disobeys God

20 In the first month all the ·people [L sons; T children] of Israel, the community [congregation; assembly] arrived at the ·Desert [Wilderness] of Zin, and they stayed at Kadesh. There Miriam [C Moses’ sister; Ex. 15:20–21; Num. 12:1–13] died and was buried. There was no water for the ·people [community; congregation; assembly], so they ·came together [assembled] against Moses and Aaron. They ·argued with [contended with; brought a case against] Moses and said, “We should have died in front of the Lord as our brothers did. Why did you bring the Lord’s ·people [community; congregation; assembly] into this ·desert [wilderness]? Are we and our animals to die here? Why did you bring us from Egypt to this terrible place? It has no grain, figs, grapevines, or pomegranates, and there’s no water to drink!”

So Moses and Aaron left the ·people [community; congregation; assembly] and went to the entrance of the Meeting Tent. There they ·bowed facedown [L fell on their faces], and the glory of the Lord [C his manifest presence] appeared to them. The Lord said to Moses, “Take your ·walking stick [staff], and you and your brother Aaron should gather the ·people [community; congregation; assembly]. Speak to that rock in front of them so that its water will flow from it. When you bring the water out from that rock, give it to the ·people [community; congregation; assembly] and their animals.”

So Moses took the ·stick [staff] from in front of the Lord, as he had said. 10 Moses and Aaron ·gathered [assembled] the ·people [community; congregation; assembly] in front of the rock, and Moses said, “Now listen to me, you ·who turn against God [L rebels]! Do you want us [C rather than God] to bring water out of this rock?” 11 Then Moses lifted his hand and hit the rock twice with his ·stick [staff; C he was supposed to speak to it, 20:8]. Water began pouring out, and the ·people [community; congregation; assembly] and their animals drank it.

12 But the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “Because you did not ·believe [trust] me, and because you did not ·honor me as holy [show my holiness] before the ·people [L sons/T children of Israel], you will not lead ·them [L this community; congregation; assembly] into the land I will give them [20:22–29; Deut. 34:1–12].”

13 These are the waters of Meribah [C “Argument”], where the ·Israelites [L sons/T children of Israel] ·argued with [contended with; brought a case against] the Lord and where he showed them he was holy.

Edom Will Not Let Israel Pass

14 From Kadesh, Moses sent messengers to the king of Edom. He said, “Your brothers, the Israelites, say to you: You know about all the ·troubles [hardship] we have had, 15 how our ·ancestors [fathers] went down into Egypt and we lived there for many years. The people of Egypt ·were cruel to [oppressed] us and our ·ancestors [fathers], 16 but when we cried out to the Lord, he heard ·us [L our voice] and sent us an ·angel [messenger] to bring us out of Egypt.

“Now we are here at Kadesh, a town on the edge of your ·land [boundaries]. 17 Please let us pass through your country. We will not ·touch [pass through] any fields of grain or vineyards, and will not drink water from the wells. We will travel only along the ·king’s road [King’s Highway; C a north-south international highway], not turning right or left until we have passed through your ·country [boundaries].”

18 But the king of Edom answered: “You may not pass through here. If you try, I will come and meet you with swords.”

19 The ·Israelites [L sons/T children of Israel] answered: “We will go along the ·main road [highway], and if we or our animals drink any of your water, we will pay for it. We only want to walk through. That’s all.”

20 But he answered: “You may not pass through here.”

Then the Edomites went out to meet the Israelites with a large and powerful army. 21 The Edomites refused to let them pass through their ·country [boundaries], so the Israelites turned back.

Aaron Dies

22 ·All the Israelites [L The sons/T children of Israel, all the community/assembly/congregation] moved from Kadesh to Mount Hor, 23 near the border of Edom. There the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, 24 “Aaron will ·die [L be gathered to his people]. He will not enter the land that I’m giving to the ·Israelites [L sons/T children of Israel], because you both ·acted [rebelled] against my command at the waters of Meribah [20:1–13]. 25 Take Aaron and his son Eleazar up on Mount Hor, 26 and take off Aaron’s special clothes and put them on his son Eleazar. Aaron will die there; he will ·join his people [L be gathered].”

27 Moses obeyed the Lord’s command. They climbed up Mount Hor, and all the ·people [community; assembly; congregation] saw them go. 28 Moses took off Aaron’s clothes and put them on Aaron’s son Eleazar. Then Aaron died there on top of the mountain. Moses and Eleazar came back down the mountain, 29 and when all the ·people [community; assembly; congregation] learned that Aaron was dead, ·everyone in [L all the house of] Israel cried for him for thirty days.

Luke 1:1-25

Luke Writes About Jesus’ Life

Many have ·tried to report on [set out to compile an account/narrative of] the things that ·happened [have been fulfilled/accomplished] among us [John 20:31; Acts 1:1–3; 2 Pet. 1:16–19]. They have written the same things that ·we learned from [L were handed down by] others—the ·people who saw those things [L eyewitnesses] from the beginning and ·served God by telling people his message [L were servants of the word; Acts 10:39–41; 1 John 1:1–3]. Since I myself have ·studied [investigated; followed closely] everything carefully from the beginning, most excellent [C a designation for someone with high social or political status] Theophilus, it seemed ·good [fitting] for me to write it out for you. I arranged it ·in order [or in an orderly manner], to help you know that what you have been taught is ·true [certain; reliable; John 20:31].

Zechariah and Elizabeth

During the time ·Herod ruled Judea [L of Herod, king of Judea], there was a priest named Zechariah who belonged to ·Abijah’s group [the priestly division/order of Abijah; C priests were divided into twenty-four divisions; 2 Chr. 31:2]. Zechariah’s wife, Elizabeth, came from the ·family [L daughters; C female descendants] of Aaron [C brother of Moses and first high priest of Israel; for a priest like Zechariah to marry a woman of priestly ancestry was a special blessing]. [L Both] Zechariah and Elizabeth ·truly did what God said was good [L were righteous before God]. They ·did [followed; walked in] everything the Lord commanded and were ·without fault [blameless] in keeping his ·law [regulations; requirements]. But they had no children, because Elizabeth ·could not have a baby [could not conceive; T was barren], and both of them were very old [Gen. 17:17; 18:11].

One day Zechariah was serving as a priest before God, because his ·group [order; division] was on duty. According to the custom of the ·priests [L priesthood], he was chosen by lot [C similar to dice; used to determine God’s will] to go into the Temple of the Lord and burn incense [1 Chr. 6:49; Heb. 9:6]. 10 ·There were a great many people [L The whole multitude of the people were] outside praying at the ·time [L hour] the incense was offered. 11 Then an angel ·of [sent by] the Lord appeared to Zechariah, standing on the right side of the incense ·table [altar]. 12 When he saw the angel, Zechariah was ·startled [shaken] and frightened. 13 But the angel said to him, “Zechariah, don’t be afraid. God has heard your ·prayer [petition]. Your wife, Elizabeth, will ·give birth to [bear for you] a son, and you will name him John. 14 He will bring you joy and ·gladness [delight], and many people will ·be happy [rejoice] because of his birth. 15 [L For; Because] John will be a great man ·for [in the eyes of; L before] the Lord. He will never drink wine or beer [C indicating he will be set apart to God for special service; Num. 6:3], and even ·from birth [or in his mother’s womb; 1:41, 44], he will be filled with the Holy Spirit. 16 He will help many ·people [L of the children] of Israel return to the Lord their God [1 Kin. 18:37]. 17 He will go before ·the Lord [L him] in [the] spirit and power ·like [of] Elijah. He will ·make peace between parents and [L turn the hearts of parents/fathers back to] their children and will bring those who are not obeying God back to the ·right way of thinking [or wisdom of the righteous], ·to make a people ready [L to prepare a people who are fit/ready] for the ·coming of the Lord [L Lord; Mal. 4:5–6].”

18 Zechariah said to the angel, “How can I know ·that what you say is true [L this]? [L For] I am an old man, and my wife is old, too [Gen. 17:17].”

19 The angel answered him, “I am Gabriel [C one of two named angels in Scripture (the other is Michael); Dan. 8:16; 9:21; 10:10–14]. I stand before God, who sent me to talk to you and to tell you this good news. 20 Now, ·listen [L look; T behold]! You will [L be silent and] not be able to speak until the day these things happen, because you did not believe ·what I told you [L my words]. ·But they will really happen [L …which will be fulfilled at their appointed time].”

21 Outside, the people were still waiting for Zechariah and were ·surprised that [wondering why] he was ·staying so long [delayed] in the Temple. 22 When Zechariah came outside, he could not speak to them, and they knew he had seen a vision in the Temple. He could only ·make signs [motion; gesture] to them and remained unable to speak. 23 When his ·time [period; L days] of service at the Temple was finished, he went home.

24 ·Later [L After these days], Zechariah’s wife, Elizabeth, became pregnant and ·did not go out of her house [went into seclusion; L hid herself; C the reason is unknown, perhaps for quiet worship or to avoid gawking neighbors] for five months. Elizabeth said, 25 “·Look what [This is what; L Thus] the Lord has done for me! He has [L watched over me and] taken away my disgrace among the people [C the Jewish people thought it was a disgrace for a woman not to have children; Gen. 30:23].”

Psalm 56

Trusting God for Help

For the director of music. To the tune of “The Dove in the Distant Oak.” A miktam [C perhaps “inscription”] of David when the Philistines ·captured [seized] him in Gath [C referring to the episode in 1 Sam. 21:10–15 or to an unrecorded event].

56 God, be ·merciful [gracious] to me because people are ·chasing [trampling; hounding; snapping at] me;
the battle has ·pressed [harrassed] me all day long.
My enemies have ·chased [trampled on; hounded; snapped at] me all day;
there are many proud people fighting me.
When I am afraid,
I will ·trust [have confidence in] you.
I praise God for his word.
I ·trust [have confidence in] God, so I am not afraid.
What can ·human beings [L flesh] do to me?

All day long they ·twist [find fault with] my words;
all their evil ·plans [or thoughts] are against me.
They ·wait [or attack; or strive]. They hide.
They watch my ·steps [L heels],
hoping to kill me.
God, do not let them escape;
·punish [L bring down] the ·foreign nations [peoples] in your anger.
You have ·recorded [recounted] my ·troubles [wanderings].
You have ·kept a list of my tears [L put my tears in your bottle].
Aren’t they in your records?

On the day I call for help, my enemies will ·be defeated [L turn back].
I know that God is on my side.
10 I praise God for his word to me;
I praise the Lord for his word.
11 I ·trust [have confidence] in God. I will not be afraid.
What can people do to me?

12 God, I must keep my ·promises [vows] to you.
I will give you my ·offerings to thank you [thank offerings],
13 because you have ·saved [protected] me from death.
You have kept ·me from being defeated [L my feet from falling].
So I will walk ·with [L in the presence of] God
in light ·among [of] the living.

Numbers 16:41-18:32 ~ Mark 16:1-20 ~ Psalm 55:1-23 ~ Proverbs 11:7

Today is the 12th day of March.  Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible.  I’m Brian.  Here we are, stepping together into a brand new week and I love the fresh start of that. As is our tradition around here, we’ll read from a different translation this week than we did the week before. This week we’ll read from the Expanded Bible.  So back out into the wilderness we go where there is some drama going on.  Numbers chapter 16, verse 41 through 18 verse 32 today.

Prayer

Father, we thank you for this new week.  Every time we cross the threshold of a new day, a new week, a new month, a new year, a new decade, we are reminded that what has gone before us is a result of the choices that we have made, whether or not we have chosen to walk with you.  Every time we cross the threshold, we realize that our future will be made up of similar choices and we’re reminded that there is no life outside of you.  We must walk with you.  This is how we were created.  So we thank you for this new week and we long to be in your presence every moment of it.  We offer it to you for your service and for your glory and may your glory shine down and reflect off of us into this world.  And may we do your work as sons and daughters of the kingdom.  Come Holy Spirit.  We offer this week in advance because we love you and the fact that we’re even going to have this week is a gift from you.  So come Holy Spirit into all of our thoughts, words and deeds, changing us and letting us be your hands and feet to be agents of change in return. Come Holy Spirit, we pray in the mighty name of Jesus, amen.

Community Prayer Requests and Praise Reports

Hello, this is Miguel from California.  James, teacher from LA, I am calling to pray with you and to pray for you.  So let’s just jump right in and whoever else is listening, please pray with me.  Father God, thank you for James.  I thank you for where you’ve placed him, that you are leading him, that you are guiding him to the work that you have for him.  Father, I thank you for the softening of the heart of the student that he had mentioned in his prayer request.  And God, we appeal for this soul.  We appeal for this child of God.  We appeal for his salvation.  We come before you and we ask for this seed to take root in this heart.  May this seed find soft soil in his heart and take root and blossom into a beautiful tree of salvation, a tree that yields even more fruit for the glory of God that this gospel will not just stop here with just this one student, but it will spread throughout his classmates, throughout his friends and his family.  He has a story, as we hear, but God, your gospel, your good news is more powerful than any other story that is imaginable.  In Jesus’ name we ask for this boy, this student of James.  God, may you just continue to flourish in James’ work for you.  God, we thank you.  We praise you for what you’re doing.  We ask this in Jesus’ powerful and mighty name.  Amen.

Hey Dabbers.  This is Derrick in Atlanta, here with my wife and we just want to say thank you for being a community that supports one another through Jesus Christ.  And we just want to support you all with our prayers and hope that you pray for us and our family and our future endeavors. Thanks so much, Brian, for what you do. We love you guys.  Bye.

Hey DAB family.  Jonathon calling here from Kentucky.  I wanted to update you on my father, Pastor Ted, who was recently diagnosed with prostate cancer.  For those who don’t know, he has been a pastor for 43 years, just a deep, deep lover of God who brings so much joy and vitality and Christian life into the church. We just got back from the Cleveland Clinic and the general report is yes, you do have prostate cancer.  The good news is no, it has not spread all throughout your body.  It was like maybe one or two lymph nodes are affected.  It is still pretty serious because it is Gleason scale 9 cancer and it is a large tumor in his prostate.  But I’m calling because I wanted to ask you all to pray about something specific.  On March 16th, so in a few days he is going to be going to Vanderbilt.  They are going to put a couple of gold markers in his prostate and that is to show the radiologist where to direct the radiation. We are praying that as soon as they put those markers in, they have to do two scans, CT scan and an MRI, just to see if the gold markers got put in correctly.  Would you all pray with us?  We just believe God is big.  He can do this.  Would you pray with us that when they go to look at those scans after they have placed those markers in, they’ll just see no trace of cancer and they’ll just come back and say ‘we don’t know what is going on, but we don’t see any cancer anymore in your prostate.  So we put these gold markers in and we don’t see any prostate cancer.’  We believe God can do that.  He is big.  He is able. He is awesome.  I just wanted to reach out to the DAB family and ask would you all join us and raise up a canopy of prayer over this and let’s all together ask if God would be gracious and willing to just remove and eradicate this cancer for his glory?  And we’ll praise his name.  Love you all. Thank you so much and we’re praying for each and every one of you.  God bless you.

Hi, this is an encouragement for __________.  My name is Charlotte from the UK and this is about your allergies. It says put on all the armor of God, all the armor that God gives you so that you will be able to stand up against the devil’s evil tricks, for we are not fighting against human beings but against the wicked spiritual forces in the heavenly world, __________ and constant perils of this age.  So put on God’s full armor now and when the evil day comes you will be able to resist the enemy’s attack enough to fight him to the end.  You will still hold your ground.  So this is just an encouragement to say put on every single piece of armor that God’s given you and he will give it to you if you ask him.  The theme for this year is margin, so I encourage you that before the trials and tribulations come, that you will put on all the armor so you will be able to stand on the day.  Thank you Audio Bible.  Bye.

Be not dismayed, what’er betide, God will take care of you.  Beneath his wings of love abide, God will take care of you. Through days of toil when heart dost fail, God will take care of you.  When dangers fierce your path assail, God will take care of you.  All you may need he will provide, God will take care of you.  Nothing you ask will be denied, God will take care of you.  No matter what may be the test, God will take care of you.  Lean, weary one, upon his breast,  God will take care of you.  [Singing] God will take care of you through every day, throughout the way, God will take of you.  God will take care of you.

Greetings Daily Audio Bible.  This is Tillman from Evans, GA and I know it’s been a while since you’ve heard from me, but I guess the Lord has been __________ that I just don’t feel like being a burden on anyone.  But I call with a heavy heart simply because I love my mother-in-law.  She is physically going through right now.  She had major surgery last Wednesday and she came out of that okay, but she has had a setback and she is in ICU.  She is not having much urine output and she is having issues with her heart.  So I just ask that you all would lift her up, pray for her, that she would be healed and that her body be whole for he is the God that heals thee.  I would also ask that you pray for my wife in this time where she feels confused because her mother does not live in our town, so with all the logistics and everything it gets a little difficult.  Just pray to encourage her, that she would trust in the Lord with all of her heart, all of her soul and with all of her mind.  I thank you very much Daily Audio Bible.  We’re praying for you.  Bye.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Sunday March 12, 2017 (NIV)

Numbers 16:41-18:32

Aaron Saves the People

41 The next day all the ·Israelites [L community/congregation/assembly of the sons/T children of Israel] ·complained [grumbled] against Moses and Aaron and said, “You have killed the Lord’s people.”

42 When the ·people [community; congregation; assembly] ·gathered [assembled] to ·complain [grumble] against Moses and Aaron, they turned toward the Meeting Tent, and the cloud covered it. The glory of the Lord [C representing his manifest presence] appeared. 43 Then Moses and Aaron went in front of the Meeting Tent.

44 The Lord said to Moses, 45 “Move away from ·these people [this community/congregation/assembly] so I can ·destroy [consume] them quickly.” So Moses and Aaron ·bowed facedown [L fell on their faces].

46 Then Moses said to Aaron, “Get your ·pan [censer; firepan], and put fire from the altar and incense in it. Hurry to the people and ·remove their sin [make atonement for them]. The Lord is angry with them; the ·sickness [plague; pestilence] has already started.” 47 So Aaron did as Moses said. He ran to the middle of the ·people [assembly; crowd], where the ·sickness [plague; pestilence] had already started among them. So Aaron offered the incense to ·remove their sin [make atonement for them]. 48 He stood between the dead and the living, and the ·sickness [plague; pestilence] stopped there. 49 But 14,700 people died from that ·sickness [plague; pestilence], in addition to those who died because of Korah. 50 Then Aaron went back to Moses at the entrance to the Meeting Tent. The terrible ·sickness [plague; pestilence] had been stopped.

Aaron’s Walking Stick Buds

17 The Lord said to Moses, “Speak to the ·people [L sons; T children] of Israel and get twelve ·walking sticks [staffs] from them—one from the leader of each ·tribe [family group; L house of their fathers]. Write the name of each man on his ·stick [staff], and on the ·stick [staff] from Levi, write Aaron’s name. There must be one ·stick [staff] for the head of each ·tribe [family; L house of their fathers]. Put them in the Meeting Tent in front of the ·Ark of the Agreement [Treaty; Covenant; L Testimony; Ex. 25:10], where I meet with you. I will choose one man whose ·walking stick [staff] will begin to grow leaves [C indicating God’s affirmation]; in this way I will stop the ·Israelites [L sons/T children of Israel] from always ·complaining [grumbling] against you.”

So Moses spoke to the ·Israelites [L sons/T children of Israel]. Each of the twelve leaders gave him a ·walking stick [staff]—one from each ·tribe [family; L house of their fathers]—and Aaron’s ·walking stick [staff] was among them. Moses put them before the Lord in the Tent of the ·Agreement [Testimony; Treaty; Covenant].

The next day, when Moses entered the Tent of the ·Agreement [Testimony; Treaty; Covenant], he saw that Aaron’s ·stick [staff] (which stood for the family of Levi) had grown leaves. It had even budded, blossomed, and produced almonds. So Moses brought out to the ·Israelites [L sons/T children of Israel] all the ·walking sticks [staffs] from the Lord’s presence. They all looked, and each man took back his ·stick [staff].

10 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Put Aaron’s ·walking stick [staff] back in front of the ·Ark of the Agreement [Treaty; Covenant; L Testimony; Ex. 25:10]. It will ·remind [L serve as a sign to] these people who are always turning against me to stop their ·complaining [grumbling] against me so they won’t die.” 11 So Moses obeyed what the Lord commanded him.

12 The ·people [L sons/T children] of Israel said to Moses, “We ·are going to die [will perish]! We are ·destroyed [lost]. We are all ·destroyed [lost]! 13 Anyone who even comes near the Holy Tent of the Lord will die. Will we all ·die [perish]?”

The Work of the Priests and Levites

18 The Lord said to Aaron, “You, your sons, and your ·family [father’s house] are now responsible for any wrongs done against the Holy Place; you and your sons are responsible for any wrongs done against the priests. Bring with you your ·fellow [brother] Levites from your tribe, and they will ·help [join; C the name Levi means “joined”] you and your sons serve in the Tent of the ·Agreement [Testimony; Treaty; Covenant; Ex. 25:10]. They are under your control, to do all the work that needs to be done in the Tent. But they must not go near the things in the Holy Place or near the altar. If they do, both you and they will die. They will join you in taking care of the Meeting Tent. They must do the work at the Tent, and no ·one else [stranger; outsider] may come near you.

“You must take care of the Holy Place and the altar so that I won’t become angry with the ·Israelites [L sons/T children of Israel] again. I myself chose your ·fellow [brother] Levites from among the ·Israelites [L sons/T children of Israel] as a gift given for you to the Lord, to work at the Meeting Tent. But only you and your sons may ·serve as priests [L guard the priesthood]. Only you may serve at the altar or go behind the curtain. I am giving you this gift of serving as a priest, and ·anyone else [any stranger/outsider] who comes near the Holy Place will be put to death.”

Then the Lord said to Aaron, “I myself make you responsible for the offerings given to me. All the holy offerings that the ·Israelites [L sons/T children of Israel] give to me, I give to you and your sons as your share, your ·continual [perpetual] portion. Your share of the ·holy offerings [L holy of the holy things] is that part which is not burned. When the people bring me gifts as ·most holy offerings [L holy of the holy things], whether they are ·grain [L gift; tribute; Lev. 2:1] or ·sin [or purification; Lev. 4:3] or ·penalty [guilt; reparation; Lev. 5:14—6:7] offerings, they will be set apart for you and your sons. 10 You must eat the offering in ·a most holy place [L the holy of holy places]. Any male may eat it, but you must respect it as holy.

11 “I also give you the offerings the ·Israelites [L sons/T children of Israel] present to me. I give these to you and your sons and daughters as your ·continual [perpetual] share. Anyone in your ·family [L house] who is clean [C in a ritual sense] may eat it.

12 “And I give you all the best olive oil and all the best new wine and grain. This is what ·the Israelites [L they] give to me, the Lord, from the first crops they harvest. 13 When they bring to the Lord all the first things they harvest, they will be yours. Anyone in your ·family [L house] who is clean [C in a ritual sense] may eat these things.

14 “Everything in Israel that is ·given to the Lord [devoted; C set aside for God] is yours. 15 The ·first one born [L one that opens the womb] to any family, whether people or animals, will be offered to the Lord. And that will be yours. But you must ·make a payment for [ransom; redeem] every firstborn child and every firstborn animal that is unclean [C in a ritual sense]. 16 When they are one month old, you ·must make a payment for [ransom; redeem] them of ·two ounces [L five shekels, that is twenty gerahs] of silver, as set by the Holy Place measure [3:40–50; Ex. 13:2, 11–16].

17 “But you must not ·make a payment for [ransom; redeem] the firstborn ox or sheep or goat. Those animals are holy. ·Sprinkle [Dash] their blood on the altar and ·burn [turn into smoke] their fat as an offering made by fire. The smell is pleasing to the Lord. 18 But the meat will be yours, just as the breast that is presented and the right thigh will be yours. 19 Anything the ·Israelites [L sons/T children of Israel] present as holy gifts I, the Lord, give to you, your sons and daughters as your ·continual [perpetual] portion. This is a lasting ·agreement [treaty; covenant] of salt [C representing perpetual agreement because salt can survive fire; Lev. 2:13] before the Lord for you and your children forever.”

20 The Lord also said to Aaron, “You will not inherit any of the land, and you will not own any land among the other people [Gen. 49:5–7]. I will be yours. Out of all the ·Israelites [L sons/T children of Israel], only you will inherit me.

21 “When the people of Israel give me a ·tenth [T tithe] of what they make, I will give that tenth to the ·Levites [L sons of Levi; Lev. 27:30–32; Deut. 12:17–19; 14:22–29]. This is their payment for the work they do serving at the Meeting Tent. 22 But the other ·Israelites [L sons/T children of Israel] must never go near the Meeting Tent, or they will die for their sin. 23 Only the Levites should work in the Meeting Tent and be responsible for any sins against it. This is a ·rule from now on [perpetual statute/ordinance/requirement throughout your generations]. The Levites will not inherit any land among the other ·Israelites [L sons/T children of Israel], 24 but when the ·Israelites [L sons/T children of Israel] give a ·tenth [T tithe] of everything they make to me, I will give that ·tenth [T tithe] to the Levites as a reward. That is why I said about the Levites: ‘They will not inherit any land among the ·Israelites [L sons/T children of Israel].’”

25 The Lord said to Moses, 26 “Speak to the Levites and tell them: ‘You will receive a ·tenth [T tithe] of everything the ·Israelites [L sons/T children of Israel] make, which I will give to you. But you must give a ·tenth of that [L tenth of a tenth; T tithe of a tithe] back to the Lord. 27 I will accept your offering just as much as I accept the offerings from others, who give ·new grain [L the grain of the threshing floor] or ·new wine [L the fullness of the winepress]. 28 In this way you will present an offering to the Lord as the other ·Israelites [L sons/T children of Israel] do. When you receive a ·tenth [T tithe] from the ·Israelites [L sons/T children of Israel], you will give a ·tenth [tithe] of that to Aaron, the priest, as the Lord’s share. 29 Choose the best and holiest part from what you are given as the portion you must give to the Lord.’

30 “Say to the Levites: ‘When you present the best, it will be accepted as much as the ·grain [L product of the threshing floor] and ·wine [L product of the wine press] from the other people. 31 You and your ·families [L house] may eat all that is left anywhere, because it is your pay for your work in the Meeting Tent. 32 And if you always give the best part to the Lord, you will never be guilty. If you do not ·sin against [profane] the holy offerings of the ·Israelites [L sons/T children of Israel], you will not die.’”

Mark 16

Jesus Rises from the Dead(A)

16 The day after the Sabbath day, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought some sweet-smelling spices to ·put on [anoint] Jesus’ body. Very early on that day, the first day of the week, soon after sunrise, the women were on their way to the tomb. They said to each other, “Who will roll away for us the stone that covers the entrance of the tomb?”

Then the women looked and saw that the stone had already been rolled away, even though it was very large. The women entered the tomb and saw a young man wearing a white robe and sitting on the right side, and they were ·afraid [alarmed; amazed].

But the man said, “Don’t be ·afraid [alarmed; amazed]. You are looking for Jesus from Nazareth, who has been crucified. He has risen from the dead; he is not here. Look, here is the place they laid him. Now go and tell his ·followers [disciples] and Peter, ‘Jesus is going into Galilee ahead of you, and you will see him there as he told you before.’”

The women were shaking with fear and ·confused [overwhelmed; bewildered], so they left the tomb and ran away. They did not tell anyone about what happened, because they were afraid.

Verses 9–20 are not included in some of the earliest surviving Greek copies of Mark and have significant stylistic differences from the rest of Mark’s Gospel.

Some Followers See Jesus(B)

|After Jesus rose from the dead early on the first day of the week, he showed himself first to Mary Magdalene. One time in the past, he had ·forced [driven; cast] seven demons out of her. 10 After Mary saw Jesus, she went and told his followers, who were ·very sad [mourning; grieving] and were crying. 11 But Mary told them that Jesus was alive. She said that she had seen him, but they did not believe her.

12 Later, Jesus showed himself to two of ·his followers [his disciples; L them] while they were walking in the country, but he did not look the same as before. 13 They went back to the others and told them what had happened, but again, they did not believe them.

Jesus Talks to the Disciples(C)

14 Later Jesus showed himself to the eleven while they were ·eating [reclining at table; see 2:15], and he ·criticized [reprimanded; rebuked] them because they had no faith. They were ·stubborn [hard hearted] and refused to believe those who had seen him after he had risen from the dead.

15 Jesus said to them, “Go everywhere in the world, and ·tell [preach; proclaim] the ·Good News [Gospel] to ·everyone [all creation]. 16 Anyone who believes and is baptized will be saved, but anyone who does not believe will be ·punished [condemned]. 17 And those who believe will be able to do these things as ·proof [signs]: They will use my name to ·force [drive; cast] out demons. They will speak in new ·languages [tongues]. 18 They will pick up snakes and drink poison without being hurt. They will ·touch [lay hands on] the sick, and the sick will ·be healed [recover].”

19 After the Lord Jesus said these things to them, he was carried up into heaven, and he sat at the right ·side [hand] of God. 20 The ·followers [disciples] went everywhere in the world and ·told [preached; proclaimed] the ·Good News [Gospel] to people, and the Lord helped them. The Lord ·proved [confirmed] that the ·Good News [Gospel] they ·told [preached; proclaimed] was true by giving them power to work ·miracles [signs].|

Psalm 55

A Prayer About a False Friend

For the director of music. With stringed instruments. A ·maskil [skillful psalm; meditation] of David.

55 God, ·listen [L give ear] to my prayer
and do not ·ignore [hide from] my ·cry for help [supplication].
Pay attention to me and answer me.
·I am troubled and [My cares give me no peace and I am] upset
by ·what the enemy says [L the voice/sound of my enemy]
and ·how the wicked look at me [before the stares/or because of the afflictions of my enemy].
They bring troubles down on me,
and in anger they ·attack [persecute; or hate] me.

·I am frightened inside [L My heart writhes inside me];
the terror of death has ·attacked [L fallen on] me.
·I am scared and shaking [Fear and trembling come on me],
and ·terror [shuddering] ·grips [overwhelms] me.
I said, “·I wish [O that] I had wings like a dove.
Then I would fly away and rest.
I would ·wander [flee] far away
and stay in the ·desert [wilderness]. ·Selah [Interlude]
I would hurry to my place of escape,
far away from the raging wind and ·storm [tempest].”

Lord, ·destroy [or frustrate; or check; or confuse; L swallow] and ·confuse [confound; L divide] their ·words [speech; or plans; L tongues; Gen. 11:1–9],
because I see violence and ·fighting [strife; contention; accusation] in the city.
10 Day and night they are all around its walls,
and evil and trouble are everywhere inside.
11 Destruction is ·everywhere in the city [L in its midst];
·trouble [oppression] and ·lying [deception] never leave its ·streets [public square].

12 It was not an enemy ·insulting [scorning; reproaching] me.
I could ·stand [bear] that.
It was not someone who hated me who insulted me.
I could hide from him.
13 But it is you, a person like me,
my companion and good friend.
14 We had ·a good friendship [sweet fellowship together]
and walked ·together [or noisily; or quietly; or with the crowd] to God’s ·Temple [L house].

15 Let death ·take away [L rise up on] ·my enemies [L them].
Let them ·die while they are still young [L go down to the grave/underworld/Sheol while they are living]
because evil ·lives with them [L is their home within them].
16 But I will call to God for help,
and the Lord will ·save me [give me victory].
17 Morning, noon, and ·night [L evening] I ·am troubled and upset [sigh and moan],
but he will listen to ·me [L my voice].
18 Many are against me,
but he ·keeps me safe [L redeems/ransoms me whole/in peace] in battle.
19 God who ·lives forever [or is enthroned from of old]
will hear me and ·punish [L humble] them. ·Selah [Interlude]

But they will not change;
they do not fear God [Prov. 1:7].

20 ·The one who was my friend attacks his friends [L He sends his hand against his friend]
and ·breaks [violates; profanes] his ·promises [covenant; treaty].
21 His words are ·slippery like [L smoother than] butter,
but war is in his heart.
His words are ·smoother [softer] than oil,
but they cut like ·knives [unsheathed swords; Prov. 5:3–4].

22 ·Give [L Cast; Throw] your ·worries [burden; L that which he has given you] to the Lord,
and he will ·take care of [sustain] you.
He will never let ·good [righteous] people ·down [L be moved].
23 But, God, you will bring down
the wicked to the ·grave [deepest pit; L pit of corruption].
Murderers and ·liars [deceivers] will ·live
only half a lifetime [L not live half their days].
But I will ·trust [have confidence] in you.

Numbers 15:17-16:40 ~ Mark 15:1-47 ~ Psalm 54:1-7 ~ Proverbs 11:5-6

Today is March 11h.  Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible.  I’m Brian. It is a pleasure and a joy to be here with you today as we conclude another one of our weeks together this year. So we’ll go back out into the wilderness where a people who were destined for the land of promise realize that they are not going to be able to do it because of what they did, not because of what God did.  We’ve seen some of the repercussions of that, but an entire generation cut themselves off from entering into the promised land and we’ll see what happens next.  Numbers chapter 15, verse 17 through 16:40 today and we’ve been reading from the Good News Translation this week.

Commentary

So for the second time this year we’ve come through the passion narrative. This is the season where we’re moving toward Easter and so this is the time that we have in this season to witness this.  And it’s hard.  I mean, it’s hard for me to think of Jesus nailed up like that.  That bothers me.  It’s supposed to, but it does.  You hear him crying out from the cross something that is so human and so heartfelt and so true of all of us:  My God, why have you forsaken me?  Why did you abandon me?

I think what is poignant in this is not a theological statement that is being made, but that this happened.  Because what we see is that Jesus is actually experiencing these things as a person. This can draw us so near if we’ll let it, if we’ll look at the life of Jesus and realize that he went through every issue that we go through in life and more, far more as a person.

So he understands when we’re crying these things out.  Yet Jesus changes all of that.  When we enter the book of Matthew, his words were I will never leave you nor forsake you.  That is no less true today than when he spoke it. So what we have is a very, very present God who also deeply and intimately understands the struggle that it is to live in the hardships that we face.  We don’t have an aloof God that has no idea what it is like to be us.  We have a God who knows exactly what it is like to be us.  So rather than estranging ourselves by blaming and making accusation, if we would invite him near, to be in it with us, it could change the paradigm for us. It would turn us away from doubt and accusation and toward intimacy because Jesus is obviously not afraid to go through human things because he did.

So that loneliness that you’ve been feeling, Jesus understands that. He’s felt that.  That betrayal that you went through that you can’t seem to get past, it’s just too raw even after all this time, Jesus understands that. The black kiss of betrayal was upon his cheek, betrayed unto death.  He understands that.  In fact, there is really nothing that we could say that Jesus hasn’t experienced, that he hasn’t been willing to be involved in.

And so here in this season of Lent, as we invite the Holy Spirit to rearrange our lives, to dismantle things that don’t need to be there, to reprioritize, and the chance for us to contemplate the depth and weight and cost of sin to give us this intimacy with the Holy Spirit, may we understand that we can trust him.  Really. We really actually can trust him.

I know that is a cliché.  I know we say that all the time, but hang on a second.  We really can trust him.  He really is interested in our lives, interested enough to hang from a cross and experience everything that he experienced.  We really can trust him.  And we’re far enough into the Bible to see the threads of redemption all throughout, that this story is a long story and we’re a part of that story. God wasn’t different then than he is now, we’re just living the story forward.  We really can trust him.  So may we.

Prayer

Jesus, that is our heart cry today.  Of course we trust you until we don’t.  We want that to change in this season.  We invite your Holy Spirit into that.  That there isn’t a time that we feel like we’re not sure whether we trust you or not or that you’re just the nearest one to blame for whatever it is that ails us.  We’re sorry that we can be that way.  It’s lame. It’s childish.  You’re inviting us to grow up and trust you and see what a stable platform faith actually is.  You’re continuing to draw us deeper and invite us further because every step that we take in that direction is a step toward wholeness.  And every step that we take in that direction is a step toward who we were created to be.  So we thank you once again for coming for us and we honor this moment as we move through the gospels.  We honor this moment of your sacrifice because this is all possible because of this. So we embrace it and invite you to come, Holy Spirit.  In the name of Jesus we ask.  Amen.

Community Prayer Requests and Praise Reports

Hey family.  It’s Jordan from Michigan.  Day 36 of my 60-day challenge.  I want to say today that I’m thankful that God got me out of depression and brought my joy back.  Let’s pray. Dear Heavenly Father, I want to pray for the spirit of depression that is plaguing our family.  Heavenly Father, I want to pray for Rachel whose friend’s son literally took a bullet for his mother.  Father, show this mother that you are there, that you are with her. Comfort her and heal her, Father. In the name of Yeshuah, show her that his laying down his life for his mother is a reflection of your love that you had for us when you died on the cross literally.  Father, I want to pray for Derrick and I want to pray for Matt in Madison.  Heavenly Father, these men are depressed, Father.  Father, they are going through so much turmoil in their lives.  Their minds are filled with sorrow and anguish. Father, please heal them.  Please take away their depression and give them new life in you.  Give them new life in you.  Give them your word.  Give them prayer.  Give them meditation.  Give them healing, true healing, Father.  Give them therapy.  And lastly, Father, I just want to thank you for Byron in Florida, for being so transparent about his suicide attempt, Father.  Father, I attempted suicide as well and I want to thank you for getting me through it, Father, because you are a good, good Father.  That is who you are and you love us and you will never forsake us, amen.

Hi everybody.  It’s Lisa the Encourager.  Hope everybody is doing good tonight.  I just wanted to let you guys know or actually I want to let Brian know, thank you so much, March the 6th, for the blessing because I accept it.  I accept it with open arms.  Also decided to pay it forward to my family as a servant, not a saint, but I basically sat around this dinner table and asked us all to hold hands, which we don’t normally do that, and I spoke that same blessing on my family, on each one of us, so I thank you so much, Brian, for that. It meant a lot to me.  And also I wanted to pray tonight for Mike from Maryland, his 19-year-old son.  He went through a breakup with his girlfriend and so I’m sure we can all relate to that at some point in our lives, so I am definitely praying for your 19-year-old son, Mike, and his broken heart.  And also I’m praying for Matthew.  Matthew, I’m praying for your friend or coworker Rodney which has a daughter that is going to jail.  He’s a good Christian man and he just needs to receive God’s comfort, so I’m praying for Rodney tonight, Matthew.  And just a quick shout-out to Joelle for being two months sober from alcohol.  I’m so happy for you, Joelle.  So let’s go to the Lord in prayer.  Dear Heavenly Father, I thank you, God, so much for forgiving me of my sins and helping me to forgive others.  And I pray, God, that you will bless Mike’s son that is dealing with a broken heart right now.  Lord, only you can mend broken hearts and can make us truly full inside, so I pray that for his dear 19-year-old.

Good morning DAB family.  This is Jocelyn in Atlanta.  God just really put it on my heart to call in and ask for prayer for pastor’s wives and particularly the pastor’s wives at my church.  I know one of them had a baby a couple months ago and I kind of talked briefly with her husband and he mentioned that she was having a hard time. I know that there is probably a whole lot more of the story than I could ever imagine, but I just really would like to, as a family, lift up all the pastor’s wives.  I feel like they make such huge sacrifices and they don’t always get acknowledged.  They are given a lot of criticism and sometimes unnecessary expectations, so if we could just come against the enemy and bind him in the name of Jesus and allow these women to feel God’s purpose and to feel loved and cared for and that as the body of Christ we would show them love and caring and that we wouldn’t always expect them to be the ones that are supporting us.  Lord, we love you and we praise you for all things. Amen.  I’ve been really touched by a lot of the people calling in.  Also, for those of you that are new that don’t know, there are some really awesome and amazing prayer resources on the Media tab of the app.  I also want to make sure that we’re lifting up the women who are going to the More Conference.  I know that the enemy is going to want to try to keep them from going and find ways to make them think that they shouldn’t sign up and just ask that we pray against these things and that we pray for support for the women who are going to the More Conference.  Alright, love you guys.  Bye.

Good morning Daily Audio Bible.  This is Nathan, Gift of God from Bloomington, IL.  Hey, I was listening today, today being March 7th, how God had commanded that the people of Israel in the desert follow the cloud and when the cloud moves, that they move.  And it might be two days.  It might be two weeks.  It might be one year, like Brian said, but they followed the cloud because that is what God commanded.  That is what God wanted.  He wanted those people to be under his wings and to be obedient.  I was thinking about that and I’m thinking well, that’s still the same.  Maybe we may not see a visible cloud, but God still wants us to follow him.  When he says move, we need to follow that.  When God moves that so to speak cloud, it might be a week.  It might be a day.  It might be a year.  And it might be forever.  But we need to be under God’s command, under God’s wings, under God’s protection, under God’s will.  I just wanted to share that so hopefully it puts a little smile on someone’s face today. Have a great day.  Make it a great day.

Hey family.  This is Douglas and I’ve got a story for you.  I recently made a pretty big life change and everything seems to be working pretty good, but I got kind of __________.  I kind of camp on certain ideas and certain things that seem to work well for me and it goes pretty good, but after a while things start to not necessarily fall apart but not be as __________ as they once were.  Today is the 7th and I was reminded of that when we went through the Old Testament talking about how the Israelites would camp every day and look for the cloud by day and the fire by night and be ready at any moment to break camp and follow the moving of God.  That just reminded me that God is still moving today in the Holy Spirit.  Even in the scriptures it says that he reveals himself in tongues of fire.  It just reminded me that I’ve got to not be so eager to camp in one place but wake up every morning and just see where the Holy Spirit is moving.  If he is lifting and moving, I’ve got to be ready to break camp and follow.  So Brian, thanks for reading that today.  That just brought it home.  It’s a lot easier to follow a list of things that work and things that don’t than it is to follow the Spirit of God.  That just reminded me sometimes I make lists that I’ve got to do this, I’ve got to do this and sometimes lists are okay, but it’s a lot better to follow the Spirit of God. So thanks again.  Also, a big praise.  I just celebrated two years of being cancer free.  I know you guys prayed for me during that time and thank you guys for always being there.  Take care.

Good morning Dabbers.  My name is Allison.  I’m calling from Texas and I just want to say I’ve been listening to the Daily Audio Bible for some time now.  __________ and I love you guys.  My prayer request today is I’ve been dealing with skin cancer that’s called mycosis fungoides for some time and it has just been a journey.  I’m up and I’m down on days and I know God can completely heal me, but I need the Dabbers to come into agreement with me.  It’s called mycosis fungoides.  It’s a form of skin cancer and it has just been really, really, really more frustrating than anything.  I know God is a healer and I believe he is a healer and if you guys could touch and agree with me that God will heal me completely from the top of my head to the soles of my feet, it will be such a blessing.  I thank you guys.  I love you. Brian, keep doing what you’re doing. You’re such an anointed man of God. Thank you so much and be blessed.
