Ezekiel 44:1-45:12

The Prince’s Privilege

44 The man then brought me back toward the sanctuary’s outer gate that faced east, and it was closed. ²The Lord said to me, “This gate will remain closed. It will not be opened, and no one will enter through it, because the Lord, the God of Israel, has entered through it.^(A) Therefore it will remain closed. ³The prince himself will sit in the gate to eat a meal before the Lord.^(B) He is to enter by way of the portico^(C) of the gate and go out the same way.”

⁴Then the man brought me by way of the north gate to the front of the temple. I looked, and the glory of the Lord filled his temple.^(D) And I fell facedown.^(E) ⁵The Lord said to me, “Son of man, pay attention;^(F) look with your eyes and listen with your ears to everything I tell you about all the statutes and laws of the Lord’s temple.^(G) Take careful note of the entrance of the temple along with all the exits of the sanctuary.

The Levites’ Duties and Privileges

⁶“Say to the rebellious people,^(H) the house of Israel, ‘This is what the Lord God says: I have had enough^(I) of all your detestable practices, house of Israel. ⁷When you brought in foreigners,^(J) uncircumcised in both heart and flesh,^(K) to occupy my sanctuary, you defiled my temple while you offered my food—the fat and the blood. You^[a] broke my covenant by all your detestable practices. ⁸You have not kept charge of my holy things^(L) but have appointed others to keep charge of my sanctuary for you.’

⁹“This is what the Lord God says: No foreigner, uncircumcised in heart and flesh, may enter my sanctuary, not even a foreigner who is among the Israelites. ¹⁰Surely the Levites who wandered away from me when Israel went astray, and who strayed from me after their idols,^(M) will bear the consequences of their iniquity.^(N) ¹¹Yet they will occupy my sanctuary, serving as guards at the temple gates^(O) and ministering at the temple. They will slaughter the burnt offerings^(P) and other sacrifices for the people and will stand before them to serve them.^(Q) ¹²Because they ministered to the house of Israel before their idols and became a sinful stumbling block to them, therefore I swore an oath^[b] against them”^(R)—this is the declaration of the Lord God—“that they would bear the consequences of their iniquity. ¹³They must not approach me to serve me as priests^(S) or come near any of my holy things or the most holy things. They will bear their disgrace and the consequences of the detestable acts they committed. ¹⁴Yet I will make them responsible for the duties of the temple^(T)—for all its work and everything done in it.

The Priests’ Duties and Privileges

¹⁵“But the Levitical priests descended from Zadok,^(U) who kept charge of my sanctuary when the Israelites went astray from me, will approach me to serve me. They will stand before me to offer me fat and blood.” This is the declaration of the Lord God. ¹⁶“They are the ones who may enter my sanctuary^(V) and approach my table to serve me.^(W) They will keep my mandate. ¹⁷When they enter the gates of the inner court they are to wear linen garments;^(X) they must not have on them anything made of wool when they minister at the gates of the inner court and within it. ¹⁸They are to wear linen turbans on their heads and linen undergarments around their waists.^(Y) They are not to put on anything that makes them sweat. ¹⁹Before they go out to the outer court,^[c] to the people, they must take off the clothes they have been ministering in, leave them in the holy chambers, and dress in other clothes^(Z) so that they do not transmit holiness to the people through their clothes.^(AA)

²⁰“They may not shave their heads^(AB) or let their hair grow long,^(AC) but are to carefully trim their hair. ²¹No priest may drink wine before he enters the inner court.^(AD) ²²He is not to marry a widow or a divorced woman, but may marry only a virgin from the offspring of the house of Israel,^(AE) or a widow who is the widow of a priest. ²³They are to teach my people the difference between the holy and the common, and explain to them the difference between the clean and the unclean.^(AF)

²⁴“In a dispute, they will officiate as judges and decide the case according to my ordinances.^(AG) They are to observe my laws and statutes regarding all my appointed festivals, and keep my Sabbaths holy.^(AH) ²⁵A priest may not come near a dead person so that he becomes defiled.^(AI) However, he may defile himself for a father, a mother, a son, a daughter, a brother, or an unmarried sister. ²⁶After he is cleansed, he is to count off seven days for himself.^(AJ) ²⁷On the day he goes into the sanctuary, into the inner court^(AK) to minister in the sanctuary, he is to present his sin offering.” This is the declaration of the Lord God.

²⁸“This will be their inheritance: I am their inheritance.^(AL) You are to give them no possession in Israel: I am their possession. ²⁹They will eat the grain offering, the sin offering,^(AM) and the guilt offering. Everything in Israel that is permanently dedicated to the Lord will belong to them.^(AN) ³⁰The best of all the firstfruits of every kind and contribution of every kind from all your gifts will belong to the priests.^(AO) You are to give your first batch of dough to the priest^(AP) so that a blessing may rest on your homes.^(AQ) ³¹The priests may not eat any bird or animal that died naturally or was mauled by wild beasts.^(AR)

The Sacred Portion of the Land

45 “When you divide the land by lot as an inheritance,^(AS) set aside a donation to the Lord, a holy portion of the land,^(AT) 8⅓ miles^[d] long and 6⅔ miles^[e] wide. This entire region will be holy. ²In this area there will be a square section^[f] for the sanctuary, 875 by 875 feet,^[g]^(AU) with 87½ feet^[h] of open space all around it. ³From this holy portion,^[i] you will measure off an area 8⅓ miles long and 3⅓ miles^[j] wide, in which the sanctuary, the most holy place,^(AV) will stand.^[k] ⁴It will be a holy area of the land to be used by the priests who minister in the sanctuary, who approach to serve the Lord.^(AW) It will be a place for their houses, as well as a holy area for the sanctuary. ⁵There will be another area 8⅓ miles long and 3⅓ miles wide for the Levites who minister in the temple;^(AX) it will be their possession for towns to live in.^[l]

⁶“As the property of the city, set aside an area 1⅔ miles^[m] wide and 8⅓ miles long, adjacent to the holy donation of land.^(AY) It will be for the whole house of Israel. ⁷And the prince will have the area on each side of the holy donation of land and the city’s property, adjacent to the holy donation and the city’s property, stretching to the west on the west side and to the east on the east side.^(AZ) Its length will correspond to one of the tribal portions from the western boundary to the eastern boundary. ⁸This will be his land as a possession in Israel. My princes will no longer oppress my people^(BA) but give the rest of the land to the house of Israel according to their tribes.

⁹“This is what the Lord God says: You have gone too far,^[n]^(BB) princes of Israel! Put away violence and oppression and do what is just and right.^(BC) Put an end to your evictions of my people.” This is the declaration of the Lord God. ¹⁰“You are to have honest scales, an honest dry measure,^[o] and an honest liquid measure.^[p]^(BD) ¹¹The dry measure^[q] and the liquid measure^[r] will be uniform, with the liquid measure containing 5½ gallons^[s] and the dry measure holding half a bushel.^[t] Their measurement will be a tenth of the standard larger capacity measure.^[u] ¹²The shekel^[v] will weigh twenty gerahs.^(BE) Your mina will equal sixty shekels.

Greeting

1 Peter,^(A) an apostle of Jesus Christ:

To those chosen, living as exiles^(B) dispersed^(C) abroad in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia,^(D) chosen^(E) ²according to the foreknowledge^(F) of God the Father, through the sanctifying work of the Spirit,^(G) to be obedient^(H) and to be sprinkled with the blood^(I) of Jesus Christ.

May grace and peace be multiplied to you.

A Living Hope

³Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.^(J) Because of his great mercy^(K) he has given us new birth^(L) into a living hope^(M) through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead^(N) ⁴and into an inheritance that is imperishable,^(O) undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven^(P) for you. ⁵You are being guarded by God’s power^(Q) through faith for a salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time.^(R) ⁶You rejoice in this,^[a] even though now for a short time, if necessary, you suffer grief in various trials^(S) ⁷so that the proven character of your faith^(T)—more valuable than gold which, though perishable, is refined by fire^(U)—may result^(V) in praise, glory, and honor^(W) at the revelation of Jesus Christ.^(X) ⁸Though you have not seen^(Y) him, you love him;^(Z) though not seeing him now, you believe in him, and you rejoice^(AA) with inexpressible and glorious joy, ⁹because you are receiving the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls.

¹⁰Concerning this salvation, the prophets,^(AB) who prophesied about the grace that would come to you, searched and carefully investigated. ¹¹They inquired into what time or what circumstances the Spirit of Christ^(AC) within them was indicating when he testified in advance^(AD) to the sufferings of Christ^(AE) and the glories^(AF) that would follow.^[b] ¹²It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves but you. These things have now been announced to you through those who preached the gospel to you^(AG) by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven^(AH)—angels long to catch a glimpse of these things.

Today is the 21st day of November, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian. It is wonderful to be here with you around the Global Campfire as we continue day-by-day, step-by-step. This is that week, where at least in my life like, it’s Thanksgiving week in the United States. That doesn’t necessarily mean something to everybody all over the world, but it’s pretty major holiday here in the United States. And then that’s always on Thursday right. And then, the day after Thanksgiving is black Friday and it’s on, all the way on, the holiday season is upon us and so here we are. And I am especially grateful that we have the Global Campfire, that there is this kind of constant. This place that we can gather, this oasis of peace that we can come into and just allow the Scriptures to wash into our lives and kind of be together and at least have this place of serenity. Everything else can be a little bit chaotic, not that we want it that way, but things can be chaotic, but we at least have an oasis that we can come to each day and feast upon the Scriptures and enjoy the fact that we are not alone, that we are in this together with our brothers and sisters all over the world. So, it’s wonderful to be here at the Global Campfire with you today. And let’s do what we do, let’s take the next step forward together. The next step forward leads us back out into the book of Ezekiel. We’re reading from the Christian Standard Bible this week, Ezekiel chapters 42 and 43 today.

Commentary:

Okay so, we concluded the letter of James today. And I mentioned it’s unflinching and it is, I even said, it’s a butt kicker because it is, because it’s unflinching. And we could take that directness and you know, think like, it’s condemning or brings condemnation. Or we could say, James has been honest with us and actually James coming at this point in the year is profoundly helpful for us. In fact, I encourage you to go back and read James in its entirety, it will take you like 20 minutes. It’s not a superlong letter, maybe half an hour, if you’re just kind of going slow and really, really trying to digest what is…is being told to us. So many of these things apply to this season that we’re going into, even today, brothers and sisters do not complain about one another so that you will not be judged. That is the timely word, sometimes we can come around the Thanksgiving table and give thanks and then spend the rest of the day complaining about everything else in life and everybody else in life, but it was James who looked us in the face and said, look, you can burn your life down around you with the things that are coming out of your mouth. And this is true and it’s definitely true this time of year and so spending just a little bit more time in James with that in mind, like just okay, I’m gonna read through the letter of James again with the intent of getting advanced words for the season that I'm…that I’m going into, the season of the year that it is and make some decisions in advance. Because typically, in a chaotic season, it’s the stuff that comes up unexpectedly that we then respond to inappropriately, that then sets off all kinds of chain reactions that make all kinds of things a lot more difficult than they need to be.

Prayer:

And so, Father, we thank You for Your word. We confess our utter dependence upon You and need for You. We need You to help us do the right thing and we collaborate in that by paying attention and submitting ourselves, humbling ourselves before You, knowing that You will raise us up. But a very important thing that James teaches us is that we can say anything, how we live is actually the truth and that we can use our words to bring comfort, or we can use them for destruction, and we can even do that all on the same day. We can worship You from our lips and then curse one another from those same lips. And as James said this, this is not, like this is not how it’s supposed to be, this shouldn’t be happening. So, we’re paying attention and we’re taking heed and we need Your help to make corrections. Come Holy Spirit, we pray, lead us into all truth, we ask, in the name of Jesus, we ask expectantly, knowing that You want to help us with these things, that You desire our maturity, that You love it when we grow, that You look at us as Your children and You celebrate the little victories that we have a long way, as we celebrate our own children. Thank You for your kindness. Thank You for your patience, may we represent You well in this season, we ask. In Jesus name. Amen.

Hey DAB brother and sisters. This is Byron out in Florida. Calling for Shawn from London, England. Shawn, I heard your call, and I heard your heart breaking over how you have fallen into addiction again. And I wanna give you a word of encouragement brother. You’re disgusted with yourself, but God is not disgusted with you. You’re disappointed in yourself; God is not disappointed in you. Anything that you’ve done, that was a surprise or shock to you, not a surprise, not a shock to God. And He still sent His Son to die on the cross for you, He still extends His grace, His love, and His presence. None of it changed because none of it depended upon you. I encourage you brother, take the focus off of yourself and put it onto Christ. The day your called aired, right before, another lady called in and talked about a verse that was lined in her grandmothers Bible. I forget the verse, but the point was, God is good, glory to Him. Even in your situation now, Shawn, in the midst of your despair, look up. Look at Him, take your eyes off yourself, off your circumstances and put it on Christ. And give Him the glory that He deserves because He loves you in spite of you and wants you, in spite of your mistakes. His presence is there for you, right now, and there’s nothing standing in the way of it. Give Him praise, give Him glory and get to you moving forward, one step at a time. Love you brother.

Hi, family. I’m just calling to pray for Shawn Rodgers from the UK. He phoned on the 16th of November asking for prayer and deliverance from alcohol and drug abuse. I heard your prayer and then I’ve just been thinking about you and praying for you, this morning. And then I heard a message. And I just wanted to quote to you, Billy Graham. He once said, the closer you get to Christ, the more sinful you are going to feel. The fact that you are aware of your sin and feel guilty about it, is a sign of a spiritual life. Everyone who has ever seen a true reflection of God, is deeply convicted of his own sin. And I think that is such a important message for you Shawn. Yes, you are going through a very difficult time. And it can’t be easy, struggling and battling this type of alcohol and drug dependence or addiction. But just remember that, as you are getting closer to God, you are becoming more and more aware of your sin. And so, it’s a sign of a spiritual life. So, praise be to God. Continue listening to the word and continue growing in your faith and leaning on God, every day, no matter how many times you fall, just get back up again. Just remember that the devil wants you to think that you’re failing. When, in fact, you are succeeding, and you will succeed, and you will be delivered from this. In the mighty name of Jesus. Amen.

42 Then the man led me out by way of the north gate into the outer court.^(A) He brought me to the group of chambers opposite the temple yard and opposite the building^(B) to the north. ²Along the length of the chambers, which was 175 feet,^[a]^(C) there was an entrance on the north; the width was 87½ feet.^[b] ³Opposite the 35 foot space^[c] belonging to the inner court and opposite the paved surface^(D) belonging to the outer court, the structure rose gallery by gallery^(E) in three tiers. ⁴In front of the chambers was a walkway toward the inside,^(F) 17½ feet^[d] wide and 175 feet long,^[e] and their entrances were on the north. ⁵The upper chambers were narrower because the galleries took away more space from them than from the lower and middle stories of the building. ⁶For they were arranged in three stories and had no pillars like the pillars of the courts;^(G) therefore the upper chambers were set back from the ground more than the lower and middle stories. ⁷A wall on the outside ran in front of the chambers, parallel to them, toward the outer court; it was 87½ feet long. ⁸For the chambers on the outer court were 87½ feet long, while those facing the great hall were 175 feet long.^(H) ⁹At the base of these chambers there was an entryway on the east side as one enters them from the outer court.^(I)

¹⁰In the thickness of the wall of the court toward the south,^[f] there were chambers facing the temple yard^(J) and the western building, ¹¹with a passageway in front of them, just like the chambers that faced north.^(K) Their length and width, as well as all their exits, measurements, and entrances, were identical. ¹²The entrance at the beginning of the passageway, the way in front of the corresponding^[g] wall as one enters on the east side, was similar to the entrances of the chambers that were on the south side.

¹³Then the man said to me, “The northern and southern chambers that face the courtyard are the holy chambers where the priests who approach the Lord will eat^(L) the most holy offerings.^(M) There they will deposit the most holy offerings—the grain offerings, sin offerings, and guilt offerings—for the place is holy.^(N) ¹⁴Once the priests have entered, they are not to go out from the holy area to the outer court until they have removed the clothes they minister in, for these are holy.^(O) They are to put on other clothes before they approach the public area.”^(P)

Outside Dimensions of the Temple Complex

¹⁵When he finished measuring inside the temple complex, he led me out by way of the gate that faced east and measured all around the complex.^(Q)

¹⁶He measured the east side with a measuring rod;

it was 875 feet^[h] by the measuring rod.^[i]

¹⁷He^[j] measured the north side;

it was 875 feet by the measuring rod.

¹⁸He^[k] measured the south side;

it was 875 feet by the measuring rod.

¹⁹Then he turned to the west side

and measured 875 feet by the measuring rod.

²⁰He measured the temple complex on all four sides. It had a wall all around it,^(R) 875 feet long and 875 feet^(S) wide, to separate the holy from the common.^(T)

Return of the Lord’s Glory

43 He led me to the gate,^(U) the one that faces east, ²and I saw the glory of the God of Israel^(V) coming from the east.^(W) His voice sounded like the roar of a huge torrent,^(X) and the earth shone with his glory.^(Y) ³The vision I saw^(Z) was like the one I had seen when he^[l] came to destroy the city,^(AA) and like the ones I had seen by the Chebar Canal.^(AB) I fell facedown.^(AC) ⁴The glory of the Lord entered the temple by way of the gate that faced east.^(AD) ⁵Then the Spirit lifted me up^(AE) and brought me to the inner court, and the glory of the Lord filled the temple.^(AF)

⁶While the man was standing beside me, I heard someone speaking to me from the temple.^(AG) ⁷He said to me, “Son of man, this is the place of my throne and the place for the soles of my feet,^(AH) where I will dwell among the Israelites forever.^(AI) The house of Israel and their kings will no longer defile my holy name by their religious prostitution and by the corpses^[m]^(AJ) of their kings at their high places.^[n]^(AK) ⁸Whenever they placed their threshold next to my threshold and their doorposts beside my doorposts, with only a wall between me and them, they were defiling my holy name by the detestable acts they committed.^(AL) So I destroyed them in my anger. ⁹Now let them remove their prostitution and the corpses^(AM) of their kings far from me, and I will dwell among them forever.^(AN)

¹⁰“As for you, son of man, describe the temple to the house of Israel,^(AO) so that they may be ashamed of their iniquities.^(AP) Let them measure its pattern,^(AQ) ¹¹and they will be ashamed of all that they have done. Reveal^[o] the design of the temple to them—its layout with its exits and entrances^(AR)—its complete design along with all its statutes, design specifications, and laws. Write it down in their sight^(AS) so that they may observe its complete design and all its statutes and may carry them out.^(AT) ¹²This is the law of the temple: All its surrounding territory on top of the mountain^(AU) will be especially holy. Yes, this is the law of the temple.

The Altar

¹³“These are the measurements of the altar^(AV) in units of length (each unit being the standard length plus three inches):^[p]^(AW) The gutter is 21 inches^[q] deep and 21 inches wide, with a rim of nine inches^[r] around its edge. This is the base^[s] of the altar. ¹⁴The distance from the gutter on the ground to the lower ledge is 3½ feet,^[t] and the width of the ledge is 21 inches. There are 7 feet^[u] from the small ledge to the large ledge, whose width is also 21 inches. ¹⁵The altar hearth^[v] is 7 feet high, and four horns^(AX) project upward from the hearth. ¹⁶The hearth is square, 21 feet^[w] long by 21 feet wide.^(AY) ¹⁷The ledge is 24½ feet^[x] long by 24½ feet wide, with four equal sides.^(AZ) The rim all around it is 10½ inches,^[y] and its gutter is 21 inches all around it. The altar’s steps face east.”^(BA)

¹⁸Then he said to me, “Son of man,^(BB) this is what the Lord God says: These are the statutes for the altar on the day it is constructed, so that burnt offerings^(BC) may be sacrificed on it and blood may be splattered on it:^(BD) ¹⁹You are to give a bull from the herd^(BE) as a sin offering^(BF) to the Levitical priests who are from the offspring of Zadok,^(BG) who approach me in order to serve me.”^(BH) This is the declaration of the Lord God. ²⁰“You are to take some of its blood and apply it to the four horns^(BI) of the altar, the four corners of the ledge, and all around the rim. In this way you will purify the altar and make atonement for it.^(BJ) ²¹Then you are to take away the bull for the sin offering, and it must be burned outside the sanctuary in the place appointed for the temple.^(BK)

²²“On the second day you are to present an unblemished male goat as a sin offering. They will purify the altar just as they did with the bull. ²³When you have finished the purification, you are to present a young, unblemished bull^(BL) and an unblemished ram from the flock.^(BM) ²⁴You are to present them before the Lord; the priests will throw salt on them and sacrifice them as a burnt offering to the Lord.^(BN) ²⁵You will offer a goat for a sin offering each day for seven days.^(BO) A young bull and a ram from the flock, both unblemished, are also to be offered. ²⁶For seven days the priests are to make atonement for the altar and cleanse it. Warning to the Rich

Waiting for the Lord

⁷Therefore, brothers and sisters, be patient until the Lord’s coming. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth and is patient with it until it receives the early and the late rains.^(I) ⁸You also must be patient. Strengthen your hearts, because the Lord’s coming is near.^(J)

⁹Brothers and sisters, do not complain about one another, so that you will not be judged. Look, the judge stands at the door!^(K)

Truthful Speech

Effective Prayer

Ezekiel 40:28-41:26, James 4:1-17, Psalms 118:19-29, Proverbs 28:3-5

Today is the 20^th day of November welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I am Brian it is great to be here with you today as we greet a brand-new shiny sparkly week. And I mean this is Thanksgiving week here in the United States, typically travel, typically new…not new people, but like family that maybe we don’t get to see all the time. And then by the time the week is over its Black Friday and all the sudden we are in the thick of the Christmas season. And, so, here we are. This is the week. And as we’ve talked about before things get more and more busy, things speed up. This is a very different time of year than any other time of year, and it kinda…it changes, and it doesn’t really let up until we’re kind of in that week before the new year, like between Christmas and New Year’s and then we launch into a brand-new year. So, let’s remember we started this journey, and we will finish this journey and we will finish this journey strong and well. And if there is a time to stay rooted in the Scriptures it is this time of the year as we push toward the end of the year. And that’s not to say that every day isn’t a day to stay rooted in the Scriptures. Like if we’ve traveled this far then we know that the Bible makes a profound difference in many of our days and is there to speak truth when we need it. But we definitely need it at this time of the year because all of our rhythms start to shift a little bit and our interactions are with maybe people that are…like I said…family or friends or just different people that we’re not used to associating with all during the year that become part of the Christmas season and we start to feel the good will toward men and we start paying attention to each other in different ways. So, let’s just invite God into all of that as we continue forward and allow His word to continue to speak into our lives. And, so, let’s dive in. We will read from the Christian Standard Bible this week and we are moving back out into the book of Ezekiel, and we’ll actually be finishing Ezekiel by the end of this week. We are in the letter to James in the New Testament. We will be moving into new territory in the New Testament this week as well. So, let’s dive in. Ezekiel chapter 40 verse 28 through 41 verse 26.

Prayer:

Father, we thank you for your word. We thank you for this brand-new week and we invite your Holy Spirit into all the festivities of a week like this and the transition into the holiday season. And here we go once again. It’s a beautiful beautiful time of year, the most wonderful time of the year, and yet it can get very very discombobulated very very quickly and we can find ourselves kind of all over the map emotionally and just feel like we’re kinda getting pulled in a lot of different directions. So, we want to ask for your peace and your truth to hover and permeate this season. We learned from the book of James today that we don’t have because we don’t ask and then we do ask it’s…it’s with selfish motivations, it’s with the wrong motives so that it can kind of enhance our own pleasure. But we’re not asking for that purpose. We’re asking because we need you. We won’t navigate this well this this holiday season or any of the rest of our lives. We won’t navigate well on our own. We have already very well proven that to ourselves, and you know very well that we are not capable on our own, of navigating much of anything. And what we want to navigate is your will and your ways in revealing…the revealing of your kingdom in this world, the good news that all are welcome. And as we are learning very clearly from the book of James, we can say those words all we want but if that’s not how we live, if that’s not what our lives look like then then there is no authority behind our words. We need you. We humble ourselves before you. We submit ourselves to you and resist the evil one. This is what James is telling us to do. We need your help with both of these things. Even our own submission requires our attentiveness and our alertness and this season that we’re in can pull us in all kinds of directions so that we’re not paying attention until there’s a crisis. Help us. We submit ourselves to you. You will help us to navigate appropriately. Come Holy Spirit into this season, into this week, we pray in the precious powerful mighty beautiful name of Jesus. Amen.

Hello good morning I’m a listener in Washington and I’ve been listening for probably 10 to 12 years. I would love to have prayer for my husband who has for about 10 years struggled with addiction. And the latest is that he ran away to Las Vegas and he’s staying in our condo, and he is on drugs and they are convincing him to take his life. And I…he’s a Christian and he…he says he’s waiting for the Lord to talk to him. And I know that there are so many people that will pray for him. And everything inside of me wants to go and get him and run to him but I feel the Lord telling me to wait like in Hosea. And then I…I just pray that he gets healed from the drugs and that he gets on a program that a doctor can oversee him and start there. And I just pray that he is healed from this drug addiction forever for his whole life. Thank you, thank you, thank you so much. And I listen to your prayers every single day and I love them. And I…I’d like to pray for somebody, her name was Taylor. It was just very sad, and I wrote it down. Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you. And I love you.

Good morning my DAB family today is November 16^th. I’m calling regarding all of the calls at the end of today’s broadcast. So, for the young lady who called in who said she was tired of being sad. Oh my God sister I am praying for you. I know so many people who battle with depression and don’t know where to go. Please know that there’s a whole family here praying for you. Susie from Colorado, your entire story just broke my heart. The reality of the gangs or just knowing that there are people that are starving and hungry and as you said just 90 minutes away, you know, there’s a whole part of Florida, Miami, that’s just thriving. The world seems so imbalanced at times but please know that I am along with a whole DAB family of praying for you and your safety of your staff and that these children are getting this food and the help that they need, and that the UN would actually do something about these gangs. Lori from Boynton Beach what a praise report. Thank God that you are here and what a powerful statement that you made when you said I’m ready to meet Jesus. You know, that’s a question that we all can ask ourselves on a daily basis. Are we ready to see the Lord. But I’m so glad that you’re here to give that testimony. ³⁸There was a chamber whose door opened into the gate’s portico.^[c] The burnt offering was to be washed there.^(B) ³⁹Inside the gate’s portico there were two tables on each side, on which to slaughter the burnt offering, sin offering,^(C) and guilt offering.^(D) ⁴⁰Outside, as one approaches the entrance of the north gate, there were two tables on one side and two more tables on the other side of the gate’s portico. ⁴¹So there were four tables inside the gate and four outside, eight tables in all on which the slaughtering was to be done. ⁴²There were also four tables of cut stone for the burnt offering,^(E) each 31½ inches^[d] long, 31½ inches wide, and 21 inches high. The utensils used to slaughter the burnt offerings and other sacrifices were placed on them. ⁴³There were three-inch^[e] hooks^[f] fastened all around the inside of the room, and the flesh of the offering was to be laid on the tables.

Rooms for Singers and Priests

⁴⁴Outside the inner gate, within the inner court, there were chambers for the singers:^[g]^(F) one^[h] beside the north gate, facing south, and another beside the south^[i] gate, facing north. ⁴⁵Then the man said to me, “This chamber that faces south is for the priests who keep charge of the temple.^(G) ⁴⁶The chamber that faces north is for the priests who keep charge of the altar. These are the sons of Zadok,^(H) the ones from the sons of Levi who may approach the Lord to serve him.”^(I) ⁴⁷Next he measured the court. It was square, 175 feet long and 175 feet wide. The altar^(J) was in front of the temple.

⁴⁸Then he brought me to the portico of the temple and measured the jambs of the portico; they were 8¾ feet thick on each side. The width of the gate was 24½ feet,^[j] and the side walls of the gate were^[k] 5¼ feet^[l] wide on each side. ⁴⁹The portico was 35 feet^[m] across and 21^[n] feet^[o] deep, and 10 steps led^[p] up to it.^(K) There were pillars by the jambs, one on each side.^(L)

Inside the Temple

41 Next he brought me into the great hall and measured the jambs;^(M) on each side the width of the jamb was 10½ feet.^[q]^[r] ²The width of the entrance was 17½ feet,^[s] and the side walls of the entrance were 8¾ feet^[t] wide on each side. He also measured the length of the great hall, 70 feet,^[u] and the width, 35 feet.^[v]^(N) ³He went inside the next room and measured the jambs at the entrance;^(O) they were 3½ feet^[w] wide. The entrance was 10½ feet wide, and the width of the entrance’s side walls on each side^[x] was 12¼ feet.^[y] ⁴He then measured the length of the room adjacent to the great hall, 35 feet, and the width, 35 feet.^(P) And he said to me, “This is the most holy place.”^(Q)

Outside the Temple

⁵Then he measured the wall of the temple; it was 10½ feet thick. The width of the side rooms all around the temple was 7 feet.^[z]^(R) ⁶The side rooms were arranged one above another in three stories of thirty rooms each.^[aa] There were ledges on the wall of the temple all around to serve as supports for the side rooms, so that the supports would not be in the temple wall itself.^(S) ⁷The side rooms surrounding the temple widened at each successive story, for the structure surrounding the temple went up by stages. This was the reason for the temple’s broadness as it rose. And so, one would go up from the lowest story to the highest by means of the middle one.^[ab]^(T)

⁸I saw that the temple had a raised platform surrounding it; this foundation for the side rooms was 10½ feet high.^[ac]^(U) ⁹The thickness of the outer wall of the side rooms was 8¾ feet. The free space between the side rooms of the temple ¹⁰and the outer chambers was 35 feet wide all around the temple.^(V) ¹¹The side rooms opened into the free space, one entrance toward the north and another to the south. The area of free space was 8¾ feet wide all around.

¹²Now the building that faced the temple yard toward the west was 122½ feet^[ad] wide. The wall of the building was 8¾ feet thick on all sides, and the building’s length was 157½ feet.^[ae]

¹³Then the man measured the temple; it was 175 feet^[af] long.^(W) In addition, the temple yard and the building, including its walls, were 175 feet long. ¹⁴The width of the front of the temple along with the temple yard to the east was 175 feet. ¹⁵Next he measured the length of the building facing the temple yard to the west, with its galleries^[ag] on each side;^(X) it was 175 feet.

Interior Wooden Structures

The interior of the great hall and the porticoes of the court— ¹⁶the thresholds, the beveled windows,^(Y) and the balconies all around with their three levels opposite the threshold—were overlaid with wood on all sides.^(Z) They were paneled from the ground to the windows (but the windows were covered), ¹⁷reaching to the top of the entrance, and as far as the inner temple and on the outside. On every wall all around, on the inside and outside, was a pattern ¹⁸carved with cherubim and palm trees.^(AA) There was a palm tree between each pair of cherubim.^(AB) Each cherub had two faces: ¹⁹a human face turned toward the palm tree on one side,^(AC) and a lion’s face turned toward it on the other. They were carved throughout the temple on all sides. ²⁰Cherubim and palm trees were carved from the ground to the top of the entrance and on the wall of the great hall.

²¹The doorposts of the great hall were square,^(AD) and the front of the sanctuary had the same appearance. ²²The altar was^[ah] made of wood, 5¼ feet^[ai] high and 3½ feet long.^[aj] It had corners, and its length^[ak] and sides were of wood.^(AE) The man told me, “This is the table that stands before the Lord.”^(AF)

²³The great hall and the sanctuary each had a double door,^(AG) ²⁴and each of the doors had two swinging panels.^(AH) There were two panels for one door and two for the other. ²⁵Cherubim and palm trees were carved on the doors of the great hall like those carved on the walls. There was a wooden canopy^[al]^(AI) outside, in front of the portico. ²⁶There were beveled windows and palm trees on both sides,^(AJ) on the side walls of the portico, the side rooms of the temple, and the canopies.^[am]

Proud or Humble

4 What is the source of wars and fights among you? Don’t they come from your passions^(A) that wage war within you?^[a] ²You desire and do not have. You murder and covet and cannot obtain. You fight and wage war.^[b] You do not have because you do not ask. ³You ask and don’t receive because you ask with wrong motives, so that you may spend it on your pleasures.^(B)

Our Will and God’s Will

¹³Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will travel to such and such a city and spend a year there and do business and make a profit.”^(K) ¹⁴Yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring—what your life will be! For you are like vapor that appears for a little while, then vanishes.^(L)

¹⁵Instead, you should say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.” ¹⁶But as it is, you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil.^(M) ¹⁷So it is sin to know the good and yet not do it.^(N)

Today is the 19th day of November, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian and it’s great to be here with you today, as we bring to a close another one of the well, actually dwindling weeks now. Not too many more of these left before we reach the end of the year. But even recognizing that, we want to get ahead of ourselves, we are here, and we are here today, and we are around the Global Campfire together and we’re here for the next step forward. And so, we don’t take steps a week at a time, we take them a day at a time. And so, here we go. We’ve been reading from the New International Version this week; we will continue to do that today and move back into the book of Ezekiel. Today, chapter 39 verse 1 through 40 verse 27.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word, we thank You for the beautiful Scriptures and how they speak into every part of our lives. We thank You for another week to spend together in Your word and we thank You for almost a capstone here, at the end of the week from the letter of James, speaking frankly to us, that we can burn our entire lifetime with our mouth. And…and any of us who have been around much, know that this is true. We can find ourselves in situations where we are saying things that can’t be unsaid and shouldn’t be said and aren’t what we mean, which simply reinforces what James is saying. Lots of things can be tamed, but the tongue, we struggle there. And yet, there, is one of the ways that we are created in Your image. You speak and things get created, we speak and although we create…can’t create something out of nothing, matter out of nothing, our words create things inside of each other and we can set things on fire, and they burn a long time. So, we have been told this throughout the year, that what we say matters. So very poignantly laid out for us today as we bring this week to a close, what we say matters and it matters on a number of levels, because our faith, whatever we claim with our mouths to be our faith, is reinforced by what we do. And so, Holy Spirit, come, may our words and our deeds be in sync with each other and may both of those, our words and our deeds, bring glory to You. We pray this in the name of Jesus. Amen.

39 “Son of man, prophesy against Gog^(A) and say: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I am against you, Gog, chief prince of^[a] Meshek^(B) and Tubal.^(C) ²I will turn you around and drag you along. I will bring you from the far north^(D) and send you against the mountains of Israel.^(E) ³Then I will strike your bow^(F) from your left hand and make your arrows^(G) drop from your right hand. ⁴On the mountains of Israel you will fall, you and all your troops and the nations with you. I will give you as food to all kinds of carrion birds^(H) and to the wild animals.^(I) ⁵You will fall in the open field, for I have spoken, declares the Sovereign Lord.^(J) ⁶I will send fire^(K) on Magog^(L) and on those who live in safety in the coastlands,^(M) and they will know^(N) that I am the Lord.

⁷“‘I will make known my holy name among my people Israel. I will no longer let my holy name be profaned,^(O) and the nations will know^(P) that I the Lord am the Holy One in Israel.^(Q) ⁸It is coming! It will surely take place, declares the Sovereign Lord. This is the day^(R) I have spoken of.

⁹“‘Then those who live in the towns of Israel will go out and use the weapons for fuel and burn them up—the small and large shields, the bows and arrows,^(S) the war clubs and spears. For seven years they will use them for fuel.^(T) ¹⁰They will not need to gather wood from the fields or cut it from the forests, because they will use the weapons for fuel. And they will plunder^(U) those who plundered them and loot those who looted them, declares the Sovereign Lord.^(V)

¹¹“‘On that day I will give Gog a burial place in Israel, in the valley of those who travel east of the Sea. It will block the way of travelers, because Gog and all his hordes will be buried^(W) there. So it will be called the Valley of Hamon Gog.^[b]^(X)

¹²“‘For seven months the Israelites will be burying them in order to cleanse the land.^(Y) ¹³All the people of the land will bury them, and the day I display my glory^(Z) will be a memorable day for them, declares the Sovereign Lord. ¹⁴People will be continually employed in cleansing the land. They will spread out across the land and, along with others, they will bury any bodies that are lying on the ground.

“‘After the seven months they will carry out a more detailed search. ¹⁵As they go through the land, anyone who sees a human bone will leave a marker beside it until the gravediggers bury it in the Valley of Hamon Gog, ¹⁶near a town called Hamonah.^[c] And so they will cleanse the land.’

¹⁷“Son of man, this is what the Sovereign Lord says: Call out to every kind of bird^(AA) and all the wild animals: ‘Assemble and come together from all around to the sacrifice I am preparing for you, the great sacrifice on the mountains of Israel. There you will eat flesh and drink blood.^(AB) ¹⁸You will eat the flesh of mighty men and drink the blood of the princes of the earth as if they were rams and lambs, goats and bulls—all of them fattened animals from Bashan.^(AC) ¹⁹At the sacrifice^(AD) I am preparing for you, you will eat fat till you are glutted and drink blood till you are drunk. ²⁰At my table you will eat your fill of horses and riders, mighty men and soldiers of every kind,’ declares the Sovereign Lord.^(AE)

²¹“I will display my glory among the nations, and all the nations will see the punishment I inflict and the hand I lay on them.^(AF) ²²From that day forward the people of Israel will know that I am the Lord their God. ²³And the nations will know that the people of Israel went into exile for their sin, because they were unfaithful to me. So I hid my face from them and handed them over to their enemies, and they all fell by the sword.^(AG) ²⁴I dealt with them according to their uncleanness and their offenses, and I hid my face from them.^(AH)

²⁵“Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I will now restore the fortunes of Jacob^[d]^(AI) and will have compassion^(AJ) on all the people of Israel, and I will be zealous for my holy name.^(AK) ²⁶They will forget their shame and all the unfaithfulness they showed toward me when they lived in safety^(AL) in their land with no one to make them afraid.^(AM) ²⁷When I have brought them back from the nations and have gathered them from the countries of their enemies, I will be proved holy through them in the sight of many nations.^(AN) ²⁸Then they will know that I am the Lord their God, for though I sent them into exile among the nations, I will gather them^(AO) to their own land, not leaving any behind.^(AP) ²⁹I will no longer hide my face^(AQ) from them, for I will pour out my Spirit^(AR) on the people of Israel, declares the Sovereign Lord.^(AS)”

The Temple Area Restored

40 In the twenty-fifth year of our exile, at the beginning of the year, on the tenth of the month, in the fourteenth year after the fall of the city^(AT)—on that very day the hand of the Lord was on me^(AU) and he took me there. ²In visions^(AV) of God he took me to the land of Israel and set me on a very high mountain,^(AW) on whose south side were some buildings that looked like a city. ³He took me there, and I saw a man whose appearance was like bronze;^(AX) he was standing in the gateway with a linen cord and a measuring rod^(AY) in his hand. ⁴The man said to me, “Son of man, look carefully and listen closely and pay attention to everything I am going to show you,^(AZ) for that is why you have been brought here. Tell^(BA) the people of Israel everything you see.^(BB)”

The East Gate to the Outer Court

⁵I saw a wall completely surrounding the temple area. The length of the measuring rod in the man’s hand was six long cubits,^[e] each of which was a cubit and a handbreadth. He measured^(BC) the wall; it was one measuring rod thick and one rod high.

⁶Then he went to the east gate.^(BD) He climbed its steps and measured the threshold of the gate; it was one rod deep. ⁷The alcoves^(BE) for the guards were one rod long and one rod wide, and the projecting walls between the alcoves were five cubits^[f] thick. And the threshold of the gate next to the portico facing the temple was one rod deep.

⁸Then he measured the portico of the gateway; ⁹it^[g] was eight cubits^[h] deep and its jambs were two cubits^[i] thick. The portico of the gateway faced the temple.

¹⁰Inside the east gate were three alcoves on each side; the three had the same measurements, and the faces of the projecting walls on each side had the same measurements. ¹¹Then he measured the width of the entrance of the gateway; it was ten cubits and its length was thirteen cubits.^[j] ¹²In front of each alcove was a wall one cubit high, and the alcoves were six cubits square. ¹³Then he measured the gateway from the top of the rear wall of one alcove to the top of the opposite one; the distance was twenty-five cubits^[k] from one parapet opening to the opposite one. ¹⁴He measured along the faces of the projecting walls all around the inside of the gateway—sixty cubits.^[l] The measurement was up to the portico^[m] facing the courtyard.^[n]^(BF) ¹⁵The distance from the entrance of the gateway to the far end of its portico was fifty cubits.^[o] ¹⁶The alcoves and the projecting walls inside the gateway were surmounted by narrow parapet openings all around, as was the portico; the openings all around faced inward. The faces of the projecting walls were decorated with palm trees.^(BG)

The Outer Court

¹⁷Then he brought me into the outer court.^(BH) There I saw some rooms and a pavement that had been constructed all around the court; there were thirty rooms^(BI) along the pavement.^(BJ) ¹⁸It abutted the sides of the gateways and was as wide as they were long; this was the lower pavement. ¹⁹Then he measured the distance from the inside of the lower gateway to the outside of the inner court;^(BK) it was a hundred cubits^[p]^(BL) on the east side as well as on the north.

The North Gate

²⁰Then he measured the length and width of the north gate, leading into the outer court. ²¹Its alcoves^(BM)—three on each side—its projecting walls and its portico^(BN) had the same measurements as those of the first gateway. It was fifty cubits long and twenty-five cubits wide. ²²Its openings, its portico^(BO) and its palm tree decorations had the same measurements as those of the gate facing east. Seven steps led up to it, with its portico opposite them.^(BP) ²³There was a gate to the inner court facing the north gate, just as there was on the east. He measured from one gate to the opposite one; it was a hundred cubits.^(BQ)

The South Gate

²⁴Then he led me to the south side and I saw the south gate. He measured its jambs and its portico, and they had the same measurements^(BR) as the others. ²⁵The gateway and its portico had narrow openings all around, like the openings of the others. It was fifty cubits long and twenty-five cubits wide.^(BS) ²⁶Seven steps led up to it, with its portico opposite them; it had palm tree decorations on the faces of the projecting walls on each side.^(BT) ²⁷The inner court^(BU) also had a gate facing south, and he measured from this gate to the outer gate on the south side; it was a hundred cubits.^(BV)

¹⁸But someone will say, “You have faith; I have deeds.”

Show me your faith without deeds,^(A) and I will show you my faith^(B) by my deeds.^(C) ¹⁹You believe that there is one God.^(D) Good! Even the demons believe that^(E)—and shudder.

²⁰You foolish person, do you want evidence that faith without deeds is useless^[a]?^(F) ²¹Was not our father Abraham considered righteous for what he did when he offered his son Isaac on the altar?^(G) ²²You see that his faith and his actions were working together,^(H) and his faith was made complete by what he did.^(I) ²³And the scripture was fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness,”^[b]^(J) and he was called God’s friend.^(K) ²⁴You see that a person is considered righteous by what they do and not by faith alone.

Taming the Tongue

3 Not many of you should become teachers,^(N) my fellow believers, because you know that we who teach will be judged^(O) more strictly.^(P) ²We all stumble^(Q) in many ways. Anyone who is never at fault in what they say^(R) is perfect,^(S) able to keep their whole body in check.^(T)

³When we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we can turn the whole animal.^(U) ⁴Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go. ⁵Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts.^(V) Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. ⁶The tongue also is a fire,^(W) a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body,^(X) sets the whole course of one’s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.^(Y)

⁷All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and sea creatures are being tamed and have been tamed by mankind, ⁸but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.^(Z)

⁹With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness.^(AA) ¹⁰Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be. ¹¹Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring? ¹²My brothers and sisters, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs?^(AB) Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water.

Two Kinds of Wisdom

¹³Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it^(AC) by their good life, by deeds^(AD) done in the humility that comes from wisdom. ¹⁴But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition^(AE) in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth.^(AF) ¹⁵Such “wisdom” does not come down from heaven^(AG) but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic.^(AH) ¹⁶For where you have envy and selfish ambition,^(AI) there you find disorder and every evil practice.

¹⁷But the wisdom that comes from heaven^(AJ) is first of all pure; then peace-loving,^(AK) considerate, submissive, full of mercy^(AL) and good fruit, impartial and sincere.^(AM) ¹⁸Peacemakers^(AN) who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness.^(AO)

Ezekiel 37:1-38:23, James 1:19-2:17, Psalms 117:1-2, Proverbs 28:1

Today is the 18^th day of November, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I am it’s great to be here with you today as we move forward together one step at a time, day by day. And, so, our next step forward, the one we’re taking today leads us back into the book of Ezekiel. We’re reading from the New International Version this week. Ezekiel chapters 37 and 38 today.

Commentary:

Okay, a couple of things today. We read Ezekiel chapter 37 today and that is the story of The Valley of the dry bones and it’s like a visionary experience that the prophet Ezekiel has. And it’s just…it’s been a poignant passage of Scripture in my life for so very long now. Like, one of the earliest things that really stuck out to me in the early years of Daily Audio Bible, I would look forward to getting to Ezekiel 37 because there’s this valley of dry bones. And yes, this valley of dry bones represents Israel, but just look out across the world today, right? And it feels like we’re…we’re just so beaten down in different areas of our lives. It’s like it’s strewn all across a valley. It’s just these bones. And it’s a visionary experience, but for a valley to be full of dry bones meant probably a battle happened there and, you know, the bones are the people who were the casualties and it’s been a long time because their skeletons now. And, so, they’ve decomposed, and they’ve baked out in the sun, and now their skeletons of dry bones. So, like, that’s as dead as dead gets, right? I think that’s what the imagery is supposed to be telling us. Like this is as dead as dead gets. And the Lord comes to the prophet and says, can these bones live? It’s almost like it’s a trick question. But Ezekiel answers like really well, I think you’re the only one that could possibly know that Lord. And the Lord tells him to prophesy and ultimately tells him to call to the four winds, the breath of life. And that which was as dead as dead gets was restored to life again. That imagery, that hope, that no matter how dry, how we may get in our lives there is always hope to be restored. That has really stuck with me and hopefully it sticks with you. There is always hope. Actually, this is kind of where our coffee brand, Windfarm. I know that’s like such a weird transition, but that term, Windfarm is really inspired by Ezekiel chapter 37 and the prophet calling to the four winds, the breath of life. And I just thought, what if that were happening all of the time. What if it was like a Windfarm calling to the four winds, the breath of life all the time because I was seeing these wind farms all over…well…actually all over the world, but definitely all over the country that I live in here the United States. Gigantic windmills, like so big, and just valleys of them I’ve seen in different places in this country. Hundreds and hundreds of them harvesting from the wind and that’s just always stuck with me. What if we knew that this was available, that we could call to the four winds and ask God to send the breath of life into a world that needs the breath of life’s so badly. And, so, I love when we come to Ezekiel 37 each and every year

We’re also reading other books though. We’re reading through the letter of James and we talked about that yesterday. And James is a butt kicker. If there is a butt kicker in the Bible, James at least to me, is that…well…at least me…my butt gets kicked every year. He’s unflinching. He’s not mean, he’s not arrogant, he’s not abusive, he’s just unflinching. So, today we read from that letter, and I quote, “do not merely listen to the word and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom and continues in it, not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it, they will be blessed in what they do.” I’m pretty sure we get the point. Feasting on the Scriptures and then not incorporating them in any way in life, what good is that? Like, that doesn’t change anything. So, that should allow us to take a step back and pause and reflect upon our lives. Like, are we hearing and not in any way doing? Are we hearing so that we can have knowledge, but it doesn’t actually do anything within us, our lives are not transformed in any way? What good is that? What is the point of accumulating biblical knowledge if it’s not going to be used in any way? James is leading to a point and his point is direct. And I quote, “what good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds. Can such faith save them? Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to them go in peace, keep warm, be well fed, but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it? In the same way”…in this same way, James says, “faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead, dead faith.” So, do we have this weird letter in the New Testament that is not in sync with everything else in the New Testament? Are we needing to work for our salvation all of the sudden now that we’ve gotten to the book of James? No. You can’t save yourself. Nothing you could possibly do could save you. Only God’s mercy upon you, saves you. But if that happens to you, you have one the…the cosmic victory of victories. You got what everyone is searching for. If that doesn’t change how you live, what is that saying? Because Christ inside of us transforming us through faith should change everything about everything, because we have been made new. Like we are no longer who we were. That person died and was resurrected in Christ, a new creation. Everything should actually be different. Our faith should be borne out by the very actions of our lives. That’s not working to achieve something that is the overflow of a transformed person. If your life completely changes then your lifestyle completely changes as well, which gives us plenty. Like James has looked us in the eyes through this letter and challenged us to reflect upon ourselves very carefully. And maybe not make claims that are not borne out in our lives at all. Can’t get much more direct than that.

Prayer:

Holy Spirit come into that, come into that, come into the places where we are hearers, but not doers and come into the places that are just valleys of dry bones within us. You have promised that You are making all things new, which means You are putting things back together again, and that includes us. May we not interfere and may the very gratefulness of our hearts be borne out in the way that we care for one another, in the way that we treat each other, in the way that we treat our world, and in the way that we treat ourselves. Come Holy Spirit we pray into all of this we ask in the name of Jesus. Amen.

One was closer but I had a strong connection with both. And I want you to pray for me to help me overcome the fear of them dying and me losing other people. Thank you so much. Hi, this is Sunshine and I’m just calling. I just got through doing all of my listening and I’ve been listening probably for two years now. I’ve called in a couple of times. I’m Sunshine. I’m just going through a really hard time in my life. I have been for the last, gosh, five years. My husband has…has left and been living in the wilderness for years now and I’ve been raising our children. They’re adult children. There’s five of them. But it’s been very difficult. They’ve been so full of pain, and they don’t understand their dad and why he’s doing what he’s doing and living a very sinful lifestyle with another. And I’m just standing and asking the Lord to just intervene. And I feel like I’m in the middle trying to pray for his heart to love the Lord as well as pray for my children and to pray for my stand and justice, to love him and forgive him and to forgive others. And also just trying to find joy in…regardless of my circumstances, trying to teach my children conservative morals and first of all faith and to love the Lord because He’s victorious and faith is…is #1 as well as love. Hey guys this is Brooke from Texas. I was just calling in to ask for prayer. I’ve been just kind of in a rut with a Lord for about the past five years, which was kind of spurred on from just a really bad and confusing breakup that just led to a lot of questioning. And I’ve always been someone that has struggled with anxiety and fear and it just feels like in these past few years any fears and anxieties I’ve felt like I’ve conquered in the past have just kind of come back in different ways and a little bit stronger. And it’s just been really hard to…to trust in the Lord. And I don’t know, I just feel like I’m getting everything wrong or I don’t even know but just being riddled with…with fear and anxiety. And the other night I actually woke up after a horrible nightmare and having a bit of a panic attack and I put on the Sleep resource from Brian and I just remember hearing Psalm 34 four through five which says I pray to the Lord and He answered me. He freed me from all my fears. Those who look to Him for help will be radiant with joy. No shadow or shame will darken their faces, which was actually the verse of the day that I saw the next morning. And that’s just my prayer right now. And if you guys could just join me in praying that over me that I would be freed from all of these fears and just be able to live in freedom and in joy with the Lord. Thanks.

Good morning DABC family, this is Rodney from Atlanta. Blessings to all of you. And I want to pray for the lady that called in about the little baby that was sick. She’s very sick apparently. The baby’s name is Storm. I want to pray for that little child. Jesus really concerned about children. He told the disciples, let the children come to me. Forbid them not. Because He is concerned about children. He loves children. I wanna encourage the young lady that called in, maybe talk to the parents and ask them to consider not calling her Storm. The Bible says we have what we say. Maybe consider changing the name or calling her by another name and maybe the deliverance will come. But I want to pray. Father, I thank the Lord right now for touching this baby. Lord lay your nail scarred hands on that baby now. They put 39 stripes on your back. You were wounded for our transgression, You were bruised for our iniquity. The chastisement of our peace was upon You and with Your stripes you are healed. Heal that baby now from the crown of her head to the soles of her feet. I curse the spirit of cancer to die in her body. And God raise this baby up for your glory for a great testimony that she will have in the name of the Lord Jesus. Touch the parents. Give them wisdom Father in how to minister this baby. And Lord we praise you in advance for what you’re going to do. We know you are concerned about children. You love children. So, God heal this little baby. Touch her, heal her. Raise her up for your glory. And God we will praise you in advance. It’s in the matchless, the mighty, the marvelous, and majestic name of Jesus I pray. Amen.

Ezekiel 37-38

The Valley of Dry Bones

37 The hand of the Lord was on me,^(A) and he brought me out by the Spirit^(B) of the Lord and set me in the middle of a valley;^(C) it was full of bones.^(D) ²He led me back and forth among them, and I saw a great many bones on the floor of the valley, bones that were very dry. ³He asked me, “Son of man, can these bones live?”

I said, “Sovereign Lord, you alone know.^(E)”

⁴Then he said to me, “Prophesy to these bones and say to them, ‘Dry bones, hear the word of the Lord!^(F) ⁵This is what the Sovereign Lord says to these bones: I will make breath^[a] enter you, and you will come to life.^(G) ⁶I will attach tendons to you and make flesh come upon you and cover you with skin; I will put breath in you, and you will come to life. Then you will know that I am the Lord.^(H)’”

⁷So I prophesied as I was commanded. And as I was prophesying, there was a noise, a rattling sound, and the bones came together, bone to bone. ⁸I looked, and tendons and flesh appeared on them and skin covered them, but there was no breath in them.

⁹Then he said to me, “Prophesy to the breath;^(I) prophesy, son of man, and say to it, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Come, breath, from the four winds^(J) and breathe into these slain, that they may live.’” ¹⁰So I prophesied as he commanded^(K) me, and breath entered them; they came to life and stood up on their feet—a vast army.^(L)

¹¹Then he said to me: “Son of man, these bones are the people of Israel. They say, ‘Our bones are dried up and our hope is gone; we are cut off.’^(M) ¹²Therefore prophesy and say to them: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: My people, I am going to open your graves and bring you up from them; I will bring you back to the land of Israel.^(N) ¹³Then you, my people, will know that I am the Lord,^(O) when I open your graves and bring you up from them.^(P) ¹⁴I will put my Spirit^(Q) in you and you will live, and I will settle^(R) you in your own land. Then you will know that I the Lord have spoken, and I have done it, declares the Lord.^(S)’”

One Nation Under One King

¹⁵The word of the Lord came to me: ¹⁶“Son of man, take a stick of wood and write on it, ‘Belonging to Judah and the Israelites^(T) associated with him.^(U)’ Then take another stick of wood, and write on it, ‘Belonging to Joseph (that is, to Ephraim) and all the Israelites associated with him.’ ¹⁷Join them together into one stick so that they will become one in your hand.^(V)

¹⁸“When your people ask you, ‘Won’t you tell us what you mean by this?’^(W) ¹⁹say to them, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I am going to take the stick of Joseph—which is in Ephraim’s hand—and of the Israelite tribes associated with him, and join it to Judah’s stick. I will make them into a single stick of wood, and they will become one in my hand.’^(X) ²⁰Hold before their eyes the sticks you have written on ²¹and say to them, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I will take the Israelites out of the nations where they have gone. I will gather them from all around and bring them back into their own land.^(Y) ²²I will make them one nation in the land, on the mountains of Israel.^(Z) There will be one king over all of them and they will never again be two nations or be divided into two kingdoms.^(AA) ²³They will no longer defile^(AB) themselves with their idols and vile images or with any of their offenses, for I will save them from all their sinful backsliding,^[b]^(AC) and I will cleanse them. They will be my people, and I will be their God.^(AD)

²⁴“‘My servant David^(AE) will be king^(AF) over them, and they will all have one shepherd.^(AG) They will follow my laws and be careful to keep my decrees.^(AH) ²⁵They will live in the land I gave to my servant Jacob, the land where your ancestors lived.^(AI) They and their children and their children’s children will live there forever,^(AJ) and David my servant will be their prince forever.^(AK) ²⁶I will make a covenant of peace^(AL) with them; it will be an everlasting covenant.^(AM) I will establish them and increase their numbers,^(AN) and I will put my sanctuary among them^(AO) forever.^(AP) ²⁷My dwelling place^(AQ) will be with them; I will be their God, and they will be my people.^(AR) ²⁸Then the nations will know that I the Lord make Israel holy,^(AS) when my sanctuary is among them forever.^(AT)’”

The Lord’s Great Victory Over the Nations

38 The word of the Lord came to me: ²“Son of man, set your face against Gog,^(AU) of the land of Magog,^(AV) the chief prince of^[c] Meshek and Tubal;^(AW) prophesy against him ³and say: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I am against you, Gog, chief prince of^[d] Meshek and Tubal.^(AX) ⁴I will turn you around, put hooks^(AY) in your jaws and bring you out with your whole army—your horses, your horsemen fully armed, and a great horde with large and small shields, all of them brandishing their swords.^(AZ) ⁵Persia, Cush^[e]^(BA) and Put^(BB) will be with them, all with shields and helmets, ⁶also Gomer^(BC) with all its troops, and Beth Togarmah^(BD) from the far north^(BE) with all its troops—the many nations with you.

⁷“‘Get ready; be prepared,^(BF) you and all the hordes gathered about you, and take command of them. ⁸After many days^(BG) you will be called to arms. In future years you will invade a land that has recovered from war, whose people were gathered from many nations^(BH) to the mountains of Israel, which had long been desolate. They had been brought out from the nations, and now all of them live in safety.^(BI) ⁹You and all your troops and the many nations with you will go up, advancing like a storm;^(BJ) you will be like a cloud^(BK) covering the land.^(BL)

¹⁰“‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: On that day thoughts will come into your mind^(BM) and you will devise an evil scheme.^(BN) ¹¹You will say, “I will invade a land of unwalled villages; I will attack a peaceful and unsuspecting people^(BO)—all of them living without walls and without gates and bars.^(BP) ¹²I will plunder and loot and turn my hand against the resettled ruins and the people gathered from the nations, rich in livestock and goods, living at the center of the land.^[f]” ¹³Sheba^(BQ) and Dedan^(BR) and the merchants of Tarshish^(BS) and all her villages^[g] will say to you, “Have you come to plunder? Have you gathered your hordes to loot, to carry off silver and gold, to take away livestock and goods and to seize much plunder?^(BT)”’

¹⁴“Therefore, son of man, prophesy and say to Gog: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: In that day, when my people Israel are living in safety,^(BU) will you not take notice of it? ¹⁵You will come from your place in the far north,^(BV) you and many nations with you, all of them riding on horses, a great horde, a mighty army.^(BW) ¹⁶You will advance against my people Israel like a cloud^(BX) that covers the land.^(BY) In days to come, Gog, I will bring you against my land, so that the nations may know me when I am proved holy^(BZ) through you before their eyes.^(CA)

¹⁷“‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: You are the one I spoke of in former days by my servants the prophets of Israel. At that time they prophesied for years that I would bring you against them. ¹⁸This is what will happen in that day: When Gog attacks the land of Israel, my hot anger will be aroused, declares the Sovereign Lord. ¹⁹In my zeal and fiery wrath I declare that at that time there shall be a great earthquake^(CB) in the land of Israel.^(CC) ²⁰The fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, the beasts of the field, every creature that moves along the ground, and all the people on the face of the earth will tremble^(CD) at my presence. Listening and Doing

¹⁹My dear brothers and sisters,^(A) take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak^(B) and slow to become angry, ²⁰because human anger^(C) does not produce the righteousness that God desires. ²¹Therefore, get rid of^(D) all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you,^(E) which can save you.

²²Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.^(F) ²³Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror ²⁴and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. ²⁵But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom,^(G) and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do.^(H)

²⁶Those who consider themselves religious and yet do not keep a tight rein on their tongues^(I) deceive themselves, and their religion is worthless. ²⁷Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after^(J) orphans and widows^(K) in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.^(L)

Favoritism Forbidden

2 My brothers and sisters, believers in our glorious^(M) Lord Jesus Christ must not show favoritism.^(N) ²Suppose a man comes into your meeting wearing a gold ring and fine clothes, and a poor man in filthy old clothes also comes in. ³If you show special attention to the man wearing fine clothes and say, “Here’s a good seat for you,” but say to the poor man, “You stand there” or “Sit on the floor by my feet,” ⁴have you not discriminated among yourselves and become judges^(O) with evil thoughts?

⁵Listen, my dear brothers and sisters:^(P) Has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world^(Q) to be rich in faith^(R) and to inherit the kingdom^(S) he promised those who love him?^(T) ⁶But you have dishonored the poor.^(U) Is it not the rich who are exploiting you? Are they not the ones who are dragging you into court?^(V) ⁷Are they not the ones who are blaspheming the noble name of him to whom you belong?

⁸If you really keep the royal law found in Scripture, “Love your neighbor as yourself,”^[a]^(W) you are doing right. ⁹But if you show favoritism,^(X) you sin and are convicted by the law as lawbreakers.^(Y) ¹⁰For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles^(Z) at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it.^(AA) ¹¹For he who said, “You shall not commit adultery,”^[b]^(AB) also said, “You shall not murder.”^[c]^(AC) If you do not commit adultery but do commit murder, you have become a lawbreaker.

Faith and Deeds

¹⁴What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds?^(AG) Can such faith save them? ¹⁵Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food.^(AH) ¹⁶If one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it?^(AI) ¹⁷In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.^(AJ)

Ezekiel 35:1-36:38, James 1:1-18, Psalm 116:1-19, Proverbs 27:23-27

Today is the 17th day of November, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian, it is great to be here with you today as we gather around the Global Campfire and move forward together. And moving forward, will lead us back into the book of Ezekiel in the Old Testament and then we completed Hebrews yesterday in the New Testament, which brings us to some brand-new territory. The book of James, and we’ll talk about James when we get there. But first, Ezekiel chapter 35 and 36.

Introduction to the Book of James:

Okay, so like we talked about at the beginning, we have new territory that we have come upon the epistle of James, the letter of James. We’ve heard of James before, but we’ve never really heard from James, like in James’s voice. So, this is a new voice for us, brand-new territory for us. Although this letter, the letter of James has had its share of scrutiny over the millennia since it was written. So, like one of the problems is who, which James, like what James wrote this letter, who wrote this named James, so that makes dating James difficult. But there is kind of a scenario that has stood the test of time and that is that this letter probably was written by James, who was the half-brother of Jesus, who did not believe in Jesus during his earthly ministry, but after Jesus resurrection. Then James became a pillar of the early church in the church of Jerusalem, the mother church. And so, it’s James presiding over, like world changing fundamental choices, like the one that was held at the Jerusalem Council, when it was decided that Gentiles could be accepted into the faith, and we’ve talked about this many times and we’ll probably to talk about it many more times before the years over. That was a controversy, and it was a big controversy. So, James is a candidate for writing this letter, that’s pretty solid, if he’s leading the Jerusalem church and he is related to Jesus the Savior, then yeah, something that he wrote would probably be preserved and treated accordingly. Now we just finished Hebrews and we talked about Hebrews being written to Hebrews, so Hebrews being very rooted in a Hebrew context, James is very much written from a Hebrew perspective. Like when we start this letter, we’ll see that it’s addressed to the 12 tribes, to the Jewish believers in the Diaspora: people who have been spread and scattered all around, which gives us at least a clue about who this was sent to, and it may have been addressed this way because of the persecution that was beginning to arise, causing people to move away to look for safe places to practice their faith. Maybe the stoning of Stephen, that we read about in the Book of Acts was a catalyst for this. And if these things are true then…then this letter was written to believers who had fled in all directions to find peace, but who felt connected, not only to Jesus, but felt connected to their faith community, the Jerusalem church. So, a letter that was passed around and arrived from the Jerusalem church, this would’ve been a treasure, especially if James, the half-brother of Jesus, wrote it. And that being the case, James preserves for us some of the earliest traditions and thought in the faith in Jesus, in what we now know as Christianity. And it preserves in ways that no other letter or book in the New Testament does, some of the postures of the Hebrew, the earliest Hebrew believers. So, James teaches that how we actually live, says the most about our faith. In fact, people can say anything but how they live, this is more true to who they are. And so, James tells us that faith without works is dead and that idea…that idea is at its detractors and has been fought about for a very, very long time. Even though those in the Protestant persuasion who look back to people like Martin Luther as kind of a leader in the Protestant Reformation, should understand that Martin Luther did not like the letter to James because sola fide right, by faith alone. And here we have James saying, yeah but faith without works is dead. The funny thing, like when we read James and we start to understand the personality of the writing here, we would realize that James couldn’t care less who was his detractor in the future, like he didn’t care that someday some Protestant reformer would not like his letter. His letter was written because it’s what he wanted to say, it’s what he was convicted to say and it needed to be said and it needs, it needs to be said today, because in our world today, anybody can say anything about anything and do. How we actually live is telling more truth about us than anything we say. And so, I come to the book of James every year and I come here for the purpose of getting my butt kicked and I’ve mentioned many times this is the butt kicker. It’s not the only one, we have some more territory that will be forthright and direct and look us right in the eyes and confront us. But James definitely does that. It is bold, it is direct, it can be confrontational, it does have a tendency to kick our butts, and make us question our motives for why we do what we do. But James wasn’t mad and just needed to be forthright and direct and wanted to write something mean. Like, that’s not the point, it’s really underneath all of it is a plea, a plea begging followers of Jesus to live by faith and to live out our faith through what we do. So, it’s interesting that this is a couple thousand years old and that this was going on in the early church and so much so, that this letter needed to be written and that this needed to be said. Because James could have been written, really at any point in church history, but it could have been written last week and still hold its power for who we are today. So, here we go, James chapter 1 verses 1 to 18.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word, we love You, Lord, we thank You for bringing us this far into the year. We are definitely in a place where we’re about to hit warp speed on this year and so, we look back with gratitude for all that You have brought us through, all that You have spoken to us. We thank You for this new territory that we’ve entered into today and that we’ll spend the next few days in, this letter of James. We open ourselves to your correction, Holy Spirit, and we invite You to speak to us very clearly about…about our actions and our words being in alignment. That our thoughts, words and deeds are saying the same thing, and that they are speaking the truth about You. We pray this in the mighty name of Jesus. Amen.

Hey DAB Family, this is Michael from ___ Texas. I haven’t called in a quite a long time, but I do listen everyday with you guys. I just heard a guy call in, Vincent. Very distraught. I guess he was talking about love, and he was questioning the Lord, our God. Didn’t know why the Lord would take something away but Vincent, just wanted to tell you sir, it’s not the Lord. That’s Satan talking to you, tell you that. God is only good, and He can only do good. But the world we live in is full of sin because of the fall out in the garden. So, God is good and always good. So, don’t blame God for love that has been lost.

Hi this is Audrie from Reno Valley, California. Want to thank you first Brian, for this platform. And thank you fellow DABers who have continued to pray for myself and my son Christian. We appreciate your prayers greatly. Hey DABers, this is Christian Smith. And I was fighting with addiction and just to give you guys an update, I’m 142 days clean today. So, your prayers worked. Continue to pray for me and my mother and our journey of getting to love each other more and getting to know each other better. And just to give you guys an update it is amazing being home, clean and sober. And spending this time with my mom watching tv shows, football games, watching her yell at the tv. And thank you guys. And we just wanna let you know that we’re praying for those of you, who have lost loved ones, those of you who are struggling, yourself in addiction, those of you who love those who struggle with addiction. And we just pray for all of them, as I listen, I pray. And I want you to know that I do, even though I may not shout you out by name. Thank you for your prayers, we covet them. Hi, this is Right Ellen in New Jersey, and I would like to pray for Kathy in Kentucky. She called; I heard her prayer today. And she’s, she, she works, and she lives alone. And she’s getting her house ready for wintertime. And you know, she seems to be older cause it’s tough for her to be working at her age. And she’s, she lost a lot of family members. So, I would like to pray for her. Dear Lord, I lift Kathy from Kentucky. Lord, I just pray that You bless her efforts and working that you know, that’s she’s able to keep up with inflation. And bless her health, Lord. And she often says that’s she’s lonely Lord, and in Your wisdom, I pray, and I may not be right but maybe she needs to take steps of faith to be more socialful with other people. And so, Lord, just, I just praise her that she seems to really have the will to live, it’s just you know, in her, you know, give her the encouragement that she needs to put out the effort that cause, you know, we have to seek You every day. Hi, this is Anita, praising God. I’m calling in to asking you all for, for prayer for me for. I call in before about my grandson, that they found him dead at the lake. Love will, and detective called last that he committed suicide. So, I’m asking you to please lift us up again, we need your prayers. Today, is November 14 or 15. And I called in before, I called in before and I left a message about prayer for my daughter and me for strength. I want to thank you for all the prayer warriors that lift us before. And now, I thank you for you Brian Hardin and your family and this broadcast system that is lifting us up. I’ve been on this broadcast system for a long time.
