The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Thursday April 12, 2018 (NIV)

Joshua 5:1-7:15

All the Amorite kings west of the Jordan and all the Canaanite kings along the Mediterranean Sea heard that the Lord had dried up the Jordan until the people of Israel had crossed it. They became afraid and lost their courage because of the Israelites.

The Circumcision at Gilgal

Then the Lord told Joshua, “Make some knives out of flint and circumcise the Israelites.” So Joshua did as the Lord had commanded, and he circumcised the Israelites at a place called Circumcision Hill. 4-6 (A)When the people of Israel left Egypt, all the males were already circumcised. However, during the forty years the people spent crossing the desert, none of the baby boys had been circumcised. Also, by the end of that time all the men who were of fighting age when they left Egypt had died because they had disobeyed the Lord. Just as he had sworn, they were not allowed to see the rich and fertile land that he had promised their ancestors. The sons of these men had never been circumcised, and it was this new generation that Joshua circumcised.

After the circumcision was completed, the whole nation stayed in the camp until the wounds had healed. The Lord said to Joshua, “Today I have removed from you the disgrace of being slaves in Egypt.” That is why the place was named Gilgal,[a] the name it still has.

10 (B)While the Israelites were camping at Gilgal on the plain near Jericho, they observed Passover on the evening of the fourteenth day of the month. 11 The next day was the first time they ate food grown in Canaan: roasted grain and bread made without yeast. 12 (C)The manna stopped falling then, and the Israelites no longer had any. From that time on they ate food grown in Canaan.

Joshua and the Man with a Sword

13 While Joshua was near Jericho, he suddenly saw a man standing in front of him, holding a sword. Joshua went up to him and asked, “Are you one of our soldiers, or an enemy?”

14 “Neither,” the man answered. “I am here as the commander of the Lord's army.”

Joshua threw himself on the ground in worship and said, “I am your servant, sir. What do you want me to do?”

15 And the commander of the Lord's army told him, “Take your sandals off; you are standing on holy ground.” And Joshua did as he was told.

The Fall of Jericho

The gates of Jericho were kept shut and guarded to keep the Israelites out. No one could enter or leave the city. The Lord said to Joshua, “I am putting into your hands Jericho, with its king and all its brave soldiers. You and your soldiers are to march around the city once a day for six days. Seven priests, each carrying a trumpet, are to go in front of the Covenant Box. On the seventh day you and your soldiers are to march around the city seven times while the priests blow the trumpets. Then they are to sound one long note. As soon as you hear it, all the people are to give a loud shout, and the city walls will collapse. Then the whole army will go straight into the city.”

Joshua called the priests and told them, “Take the Covenant Box, and seven of you go in front of it, carrying trumpets.” Then he ordered the people to start marching around the city, with an advance guard going on ahead of the Lord's Covenant Box.

8-9 So, just as Joshua had ordered, an advance guard started out ahead of the priests who were blowing trumpets; behind these came the priests who were carrying the Covenant Box, followed by a rear guard. All this time the trumpets were sounding. 10 But Joshua had ordered the people not to shout, not to say a word until he gave the order. 11 So he had this group of men take the Lord's Covenant Box around the city one time. Then they came back to camp and spent the night there.

12-13 Joshua got up early the next morning, and for the second time the priests and soldiers marched around the city in the same order as the day before: first, the advance guard; next, the seven priests blowing the seven trumpets; then, the priests carrying the Lord's Covenant Box; and finally, the rear guard. All this time the trumpets were sounding. 14 On this second day they again marched around the city one time and then returned to camp. They did this for six days.

15 On the seventh day they got up at daybreak and marched seven times around the city in the same way—this was the only day that they marched around it seven times. 16 The seventh time around, when the priests were about to sound the trumpets, Joshua ordered the people to shout, and he said, “The Lord has given you the city! 17 The city and everything in it must be totally destroyed as an offering to the Lord. Only the prostitute Rahab and her household will be spared, because she hid our spies. 18 But you are not to take anything that is to be destroyed; if you do, you will bring trouble and destruction on the Israelite camp. 19 Everything made of silver, gold, bronze, or iron is set apart for the Lord. It is to be put in the Lord's treasury.”

20 (D)So the priests blew the trumpets. As soon as the people heard it, they gave a loud shout, and the walls collapsed. Then all the army went straight up the hill into the city and captured it. 21 With their swords they killed everyone in the city, men and women, young and old. They also killed the cattle, sheep, and donkeys.

22 Joshua then told the two men who had served as spies, “Go into the prostitute's house, and bring her and her family out, as you promised her.” 23 So they went and brought Rahab out, along with her father and mother, her brothers, and the rest of her family. They took them all, family and slaves, to safety near the Israelite camp. 24 Then they set fire to the city and burned it to the ground, along with everything in it, except the things made of gold, silver, bronze, and iron, which they took and put in the Lord's treasury. 25 (E)But Joshua spared the lives of the prostitute Rahab and all her relatives, because she had hidden the two spies that he had sent to Jericho. (Her descendants have lived in Israel to this day.)

26 (F)At this time Joshua issued a solemn warning: “Anyone who tries to rebuild the city of Jericho will be under the Lord's curse.

Whoever lays the foundation will lose his oldest son;
Whoever builds the gates will lose his youngest.”

27 So the Lord was with Joshua, and his fame spread through the whole country.

Achan's Sin

The Lord's command to Israel not to take from Jericho anything that was to be destroyed was not obeyed. A man named Achan disobeyed that order, and so the Lord was furious with the Israelites. (Achan was the son of Carmi and grandson of Zabdi, and belonged to the clan of Zerah, a part of the tribe of Judah.)

Joshua sent some men from Jericho to Ai, a city east of Bethel, near Bethaven, with orders to go and explore the land. When they had done so, they reported back to Joshua: “There is no need for everyone to attack Ai. Send only about two or three thousand men. Don't send the whole army up there to fight; it is not a large city.” So about three thousand Israelites made the attack, but they were forced to retreat. The men of Ai chased them from the city gate as far as some quarries and killed about thirty-six of them on the way down the hill. Then the Israelites lost their courage and were afraid.

Joshua and the leaders of Israel tore their clothes in grief, threw themselves to the ground before the Lord's Covenant Box, and lay there till evening, with dust on their heads to show their sorrow. And Joshua said, “Sovereign Lord! Why did you bring us across the Jordan at all? To turn us over to the Amorites? To destroy us? Why didn't we just stay on the other side of the Jordan? What can I say, O Lord, now that Israel has retreated from the enemy? The Canaanites and everyone else in the country will hear about it. They will surround us and kill every one of us! And then what will you do to protect your honor?”

10 The Lord said to Joshua, “Get up! Why are you lying on the ground like this? 11 Israel has sinned! They have broken the agreement with me that I ordered them to keep. They have taken some of the things condemned to destruction. They stole them, lied about it, and put them with their own things. 12 This is why the Israelites cannot stand against their enemies. They retreat from them because they themselves have now been condemned to destruction! I will not stay with you any longer unless you destroy the things you were ordered not to take! 13 Get up! Purify the people and get them ready to come before me. Tell them to be ready tomorrow, because I, the Lord God of Israel, have this to say: ‘Israel, you have in your possession some things that I ordered you to destroy! You cannot stand against your enemies until you get rid of these things!’ 14 So tell them that in the morning they will be brought forward, tribe by tribe. The tribe that I pick out will then come forward, clan by clan. The clan that I pick out will come forward, family by family. The family that I pick out will come forward, one by one. 15 The one who is then picked out and found with the condemned goods will be burned, along with his family and everything he owns, for he has brought terrible shame on Israel and has broken my covenant.”

Luke 15

The Lost Sheep(A)

15 (B)One day when many tax collectors and other outcasts came to listen to Jesus, the Pharisees and the teachers of the Law started grumbling, “This man welcomes outcasts and even eats with them!” So Jesus told them this parable:

“Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them—what do you do? You leave the other ninety-nine sheep in the pasture and go looking for the one that got lost until you find it. When you find it, you are so happy that you put it on your shoulders and carry it back home. Then you call your friends and neighbors together and say to them, ‘I am so happy I found my lost sheep. Let us celebrate!’ In the same way, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine respectable people who do not need to repent.

The Lost Coin

“Or suppose a woman who has ten silver coins loses one of them—what does she do? She lights a lamp, sweeps her house, and looks carefully everywhere until she finds it. When she finds it, she calls her friends and neighbors together, and says to them, ‘I am so happy I found the coin I lost. Let us celebrate!’ 10 In the same way, I tell you, the angels of God rejoice over one sinner who repents.”

The Lost Son

11 Jesus went on to say, “There was once a man who had two sons. 12 The younger one said to him, ‘Father, give me my share of the property now.’ So the man divided his property between his two sons. 13 After a few days the younger son sold his part of the property and left home with the money. He went to a country far away, where he wasted his money in reckless living. 14 He spent everything he had. Then a severe famine spread over that country, and he was left without a thing. 15 So he went to work for one of the citizens of that country, who sent him out to his farm to take care of the pigs. 16 He wished he could fill himself with the bean pods the pigs ate, but no one gave him anything to eat. 17 At last he came to his senses and said, ‘All my father's hired workers have more than they can eat, and here I am about to starve! 18 I will get up and go to my father and say, “Father, I have sinned against God and against you. 19 I am no longer fit to be called your son; treat me as one of your hired workers.”’ 20 So he got up and started back to his father.

“He was still a long way from home when his father saw him; his heart was filled with pity, and he ran, threw his arms around his son, and kissed him. 21 ‘Father,’ the son said, ‘I have sinned against God and against you. I am no longer fit to be called your son.’ 22 But the father called to his servants. ‘Hurry!’ he said. ‘Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and shoes on his feet. 23 Then go and get the prize calf and kill it, and let us celebrate with a feast! 24 For this son of mine was dead, but now he is alive; he was lost, but now he has been found.’ And so the feasting began.

25 “In the meantime the older son was out in the field. On his way back, when he came close to the house, he heard the music and dancing. 26 So he called one of the servants and asked him, ‘What's going on?’ 27 ‘Your brother has come back home,’ the servant answered, ‘and your father has killed the prize calf, because he got him back safe and sound.’ 28 The older brother was so angry that he would not go into the house; so his father came out and begged him to come in. 29 But he spoke back to his father, ‘Look, all these years I have worked for you like a slave, and I have never disobeyed your orders. What have you given me? Not even a goat for me to have a feast with my friends! 30 But this son of yours wasted all your property on prostitutes, and when he comes back home, you kill the prize calf for him!’ 31 ‘My son,’ the father answered, ‘you are always here with me, and everything I have is yours. 32 But we had to celebrate and be happy, because your brother was dead, but now he is alive; he was lost, but now he has been found.’”

Psalm 81

A Song for a Festival[a]

81 Shout for joy to God our defender;
sing praise to the God of Jacob!
Start the music and beat the tambourines;
play pleasant music on the harps and the lyres.
(A)Blow the trumpet for the festival,
when the moon is new and when the moon is full.
This is the law in Israel,
an order from the God of Jacob.
He gave it to the people of Israel
when he attacked the land of Egypt.

I hear an unknown voice saying,
“I took the burdens off your backs;
I let you put down your loads of bricks.
(B)When you were in trouble, you called to me, and I saved you.
From my hiding place in the storm, I answered you.
I put you to the test at the springs of Meribah.
Listen, my people, to my warning;
Israel, how I wish you would listen to me!
(C)You must never worship another god.
10 I am the Lord your God,
who brought you out of Egypt.
Open your mouth, and I will feed you.

11 “But my people would not listen to me;
Israel would not obey me.
12 So I let them go their stubborn ways
and do whatever they wanted.
13 How I wish my people would listen to me;
how I wish they would obey me!
14 I would quickly defeat their enemies
and conquer all their foes.
15 Those who hate me would bow in fear before me;
their punishment would last forever.
16 But I would feed you with the finest wheat
and satisfy you with wild honey.”

Deuteronomy 34:1-Joshuah 2:24, Luke 13:23-14:6, Psalms 79:1-13, Proverbs 12:26

Today is the 10th day of the month of April. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian. It’s great to be here with you today. Briefly back in the rolling hills of Tennessee and then we’ll be heading for the rolling hills of Georgia and the beginning of the More Gathering for Women 2018. That begins this Thursday, day after tomorrow. So, it’s great to be here with you today. We will be concluding the book of Deuteronomy here just momentarily. Which means we will be concluding what is known as the Torah or the Pentateuch, the first five books of the Bible and then moving into what comes next, which is the book of Joshua. And we’ll talk about that when we get there. But let’s conclude. Reading from the Good News translation this week. The book of Deuteronomy, chapter 34.

Introduction to the book of Joshua:

And that concludes the book of Deuteronomy, which brings us to the book of Joshua, which is an exhilarating book to step into.  Because we’ve been at this fourteen weeks since the beginning of the year, I have to count. But something like that. We’ve been at this day by day, moment by moment, moving through the stories here. And almost from the very beginning of the Bible we’ve been hearing about this thing called the promised land. So, by this time it’s almost mythic. It’s like a mythic land that was promised in advanced to Abraham and then Isaac and Jacob and Joseph. All of these people we met and followed their stories. And learned a lot about our own story in their stories. And throughout all of their stories, there’s this whisper of hope. All throughout the formation of the children of Israel and their captivity. And their exodus into freedom and the establishment of a new culture. Everything that we’ve gone through so far has been toward the promised land. And here we are. We’re about to cross over the Jordan River into the promised land. And this is the second time they’ve been right at the precipice. The first time they were thwarted. Forty more years were spent wandering in the desert. An entire generation was lost because of their disobedience, their fear, their lack of trust in God. And now as we just read in the conclusion of Deuteronomy, Moses has died having seen the promised land but not entering it. And that’s kind of where we are in the Scriptures. We hear of it. It’s mythic. We’ve kind of seen it but we haven’t gone into it. And now Joshua has stepped up as the leader of Israel. And Joshua translated to English means savior. If we go back to the original Hebrew, Joshua is Jesus. Yeshua. Joshua. So, I’m not saying this man Joshua that we’re about to read about is Jesus. I’m just saying the parallels of redemption are just so intertwined in the Scriptures. So, we’re gonna cross the Jordan and we’ll see that God has prepared this land for his people. He’s promised it for generations. But they’re not just march in and take it. They’re gonna have to fight. They’re gonna have to contend for it. They are on a great mission with God. And to accomplish it, they’ll have to partner with God against all odds to take the land. And in this conquest, we’ll notice God asking them to do very unconventional things. God continually confounds conventional wisdom with almost bizarre instructions that sometimes wouldn’t make logical sense to the human mind. This is no different for us today. This is why we must be sensitive to the Holy Spirit’s guidance. This is why we must be a people of prayer. Otherwise we’re just sort of bulldozing our way through life, hoping for the best decisions when we actually have our creator to guide us. And his very kingdom to bring. So, in a very real way for all these years the children of Israel have been learning to obey the Lord. And now they must go into this land with full faith that God will show up. And full faith in the promise that he gave their ancestors that this land was the promised land. And we’re gonna see one of the most glorious moments in the Bible. One of the most glorious times in the lives of the children of Israel even though we’ll see stumbles along the way. Right now as we move into the book of Joshua the people are fully engaged. And it gives us a glimpse of what a unified church even could look like. Unfortunately, that’s not the end of the story. We’ll get to that soon enough because it’s not really that much of a spoiler. They do fall away and return and fall away and return for the next several hundred years, but right now we’re at this glorious time. A new generation, a new leader. And the entering of the promised land. So, as we go into Joshua right now, the first five chapters will document the preparation for crossing the Jordan for battle and even their first encounters, their first battles. And the next seven chapters will recount the main battles and the actual taking of the land. And then the last part of the book is the division and settling of the promised land. Everything in the story of the patriarchs comes to these great moments. This is the promised land. The giving, the taking, the settling of the promised land. Everything that has been promised is about to be fulfilled. And so we begin. Joshua chapter 1.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word and we’ve turned the page and entered into a new era as we move through the Old Testament and into the book of Joshua. And, so, here we stand on the banks of the Jordan River with the children of Israel looking over into the promised land and we’re about to enter. And the story will take a completely new complexion as we move into this new generation and to this new era and a shift takes place. And we can feel this in our own hearts. There’s things that we have long, long desired, things that we have seen but not been able to experience. We ask, Holy Spirit, as we watch the children of Israel move into the promised land and all the things that they will have to face in it that, You will begin to speak to us about our own moving forward. Because so many times when we’re dreaming something we idealize it even when You are leading us and we forget to count the cost. We’re going to have to trust You to degrees that we didn’t even know about. Because You’re not leading us forward in life so that we can have new toys. You’re leading us forward in life so that we can discover new levels of intimacy with You. So, come Holy Spirit we pray. In Jesus name. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hello Daily Audio Bible community my name is Robert. I live in Canada in the province of Ontario and I’m a new listener and I’m really trying to listen the right way. And, of course, there’s nothing that I did…nothing that I did to get here. I always understood that the blessings that God showered upon me are new every morning but I just took it for granted, I just took it for granted. And I really feel like there is a period of darkness in my life just really lifted. And I feel like…Gods…I’ve battled some dark stuff in my life. And I’m sorry that I’m so emotional but I don’t really know how to process this all too well. And here I am, I’m calling in, with some prayers for me, please. Please guys, my wife, Shiloh, isn’t a believer and we’ve been fighting about this kind of stuff. And I’m trying to just release my marriage into God’s hands so I can do. Thanks for hearing my prayer. Her name is Shiloh. Shiloh __ pray for you __. Thank you. Okay. I love all of you guys so much. I love all of you guys so much. Bye.

Hello DAB family this is Linda from Alberta calling. I was just listening to some of the prayers and I heard Sharon call in, that she called in for her daughter and her husband and she herself has some health concerns right now. But Sharon I just wanted to try to encourage you right now. I really can say I know exactly how you feel and I have my own struggles and challenges with my daughter, who also has an addiction and mental health problem. She, right now, we are in a crisis in our family but that’s, you know, not what I wanted to call in for right now. But Sharon, often I go to my closet door and I open it up and I have a paper taped and there. And this is the prayer that I pray when I’m feeling really, really uptight about things and worried about my daughter. So, I’m going to read you the prayer and I hope that ministers to you and it is actually from the reading I did once. It’s A Child’s Window. So, God, You are at work and You are in control and Lord God You know this is happening. You are at the beginning and You will bring it everything that occurs to a conclusion that results in Your greater glory in the end. Sharon, I hope that this will minister to you as well as anyone else that needed to hear that today. God bless every one of you. Bye-bye.

Hello Daily Audio Bible this is Nathan from Bloomington Illinois calling for thoughts for the day, that this is thoughts for the day. I’m suggesting that you go back and listen to the last two days, April 4th and April 5th commentary because Brian ties it together and nails the head right there. So, he said what do we see with? What if you were to look around and all you see is the glory of God? Now, we know God created everything that is around but sometimes we do sit in the darkness. Sometimes our life is stuck. And then he talked about ask, seek, knock. Ask, seek knock. It begins with asking. So, a lot of times we ask for prayer and we ask others to pray for us and that’s important, but we’re also asked to seek. Not just seeking the answer but seeking help from others like the DAB prayer line or from a counselor. And then not. When I think of knocking, I want to suggest that that tells us to do something other than just asking and seeking, seeking for answers, that it suggests not sitting and doing nothing or doing very little. So, just something…something to think about. My wife says, you can’t do the same thing and expect a different result. So, I’m expecting different results when I do something different other than just asking, seeking, and knocking sometimes. So anyway. Just some thoughts for the day. Have a great day. Make it a great day.

Your heart my home. I live and breathe and have my being in Your heart. Your heart my home. I live and breathe in Your heart. Your love is gracious, deep, wide, and true. You have forgiven me. In You I’m free. Oh Lord, restore me to who You really made me to be. Your heart my home. I live and breathe in Your loving heart. I can’t be good unless You free me to. You release me, the real me. I want to be real. Only You can take me there. Every hour, every moment, Your heart my home. [singing] Let’s pray always, worry never and love deeply. Pray always, worry never and love deeply. I can’t be good unless You free me to. You release me. The real me. I want to be real. Only You can take me there. Every hour, every moment, Your heart my home [sing ends].

Good afternoon Daily Audio Bible. This is Prosperous Pam from the San Francisco Bay Area. I just gave myself that name. Praise God. I wanted to hear a couple of things. Brian, that message that you gave today. Today’s date is, I believe it’s April the 5th, is it Wednesday, Thursday, apologize. That was such a blessing. I’m going to listen to it over and over again, how you were speaking about, help me to see better, praying that the Lord allows me to see, you know, the light. You know, a lot of times we do get stuck in some different ways and we just, you know, focus more on the darkness but there’s magnificent things all around us. So, thank you for that. Also, you can probably tell, I’m very uncomfortable speaking in front of a group. So, He’s working on me on that too. This is actually a praise report because I’ve been out of work for year. I called about a year ago in March when I didn’t have a job and I was like really having a hard time. And I still am going through my different stages, but God has just given me such power. He’s strengthening me during this time. I am still unemployed and looking for work, but I’m still praying according to His will, not my will. And I’ve never been out of work this long but He’s strengthening me, He’s maturing me, He’s loving me more. I’m so closer to Him. I’m getting so connected with the body of Christ like the Daily Audio Bible. And I have a family here that I just love so much. Declare victory in the bay area. The overseer is Pastor Dion. I’m just being so blessed. And I just wanted to share that. Praying just lives someone up who’s listening, who’s going through something, who’s waiting for that job. God has just done so many things. He’s purged so many things out of me throughout this year that I haven’t been working. So, I just hope that lifts someone up. And I still ask you to keep me in prayer. I am looking forward to going back to work when God has willed for me, the place that he has for me. My flesh has been wanted to but…

He DAB family today is April 5th and just catching up and just listening to the Easter April 1st podcast or I think it was the April 2nd one. Yeah that was funny, that April fool’s joke that you guys played. Anyways, so, I just wanted to call in and let you guys know that, Michaela from the UK, and Lisa the Victorious, I heard your prayers, I heard your prayer requests. And I want you to know that I just spent, probably, the last 20 minutes praying for you both. So, just calling because I find that just knowing that somebody’s thinking about you helps. And, of course, I don’t have to tell you, God doesn’t forget you, He doesn’t leave you, He doesn’t forsake you. He hears you even when nobody else does. And Lisa I also prayed for your daughter. I hope that you understand, I’m sure you do, that you don’t have to give up your life for her. Jesus already did that. He’s got her. So, I hope you take that. Hope you hold onto that and rest secure in His victory because he is victorious. Hey, have a great day DAB. Thanks, so much Brian again.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Wednesday April 11, 2018 (NIV)

Joshua 3-4

The People of Israel Cross the Jordan

The next morning Joshua and all the people of Israel got up early, left the camp at Acacia, and went to the Jordan, where they camped while waiting to cross it. Three days later the leaders went through the camp and told the people, “When you see the priests carrying the Covenant Box of the Lord your God, break camp and follow them. You have never been here before, so they will show you the way to go. But do not get near the Covenant Box; stay about half a mile behind it.”

Joshua told the people, “Purify yourselves, because tomorrow the Lord will perform miracles among you.” Then he told the priests to take the Covenant Box and go with it ahead of the people. They did as he said.

The Lord said to Joshua, “What I do today will make all the people of Israel begin to honor you as a great man, and they will realize that I am with you as I was with Moses. Tell the priests carrying the Covenant Box that when they reach the river, they must wade in and stand near the bank.”

Then Joshua said to the people, “Come here and listen to what the Lord your God has to say. 10 As you advance, he will surely drive out the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Hivites, the Perizzites, the Girgashites, the Amorites, and the Jebusites. You will know that the living God is among you 11 when the Covenant Box of the Lord of all the earth crosses the Jordan ahead of you. 12 Now choose twelve men, one from each of the tribes of Israel. 13 When the priests who carry the Covenant Box of the Lord of all the earth put their feet in the water, the Jordan will stop flowing, and the water coming downstream will pile up in one place.”

14-15 It was harvest time, and the river was in flood.

When the people left the camp to cross the Jordan, the priests went ahead of them, carrying the Covenant Box. As soon as the priests stepped into the river, 16 the water stopped flowing and piled up, far upstream at Adam, the city beside Zarethan. The flow downstream to the Dead Sea was completely cut off, and the people were able to cross over near Jericho. 17 While the people walked across on dry ground, the priests carrying the Lord's Covenant Box stood on dry ground in the middle of the Jordan until all the people had crossed over.

Memorial Stones Are Set Up

When the whole nation had crossed the Jordan, the Lord said to Joshua, “Choose twelve men, one from each tribe, and command them to take twelve stones out of the middle of the Jordan, from the very place where the priests were standing. Tell them to carry these stones with them and to put them down where you camp tonight.”

Then Joshua called the twelve men he had chosen, and he told them, “Go into the Jordan ahead of the Covenant Box of the Lord your God. Each one of you take a stone on your shoulder, one for each of the tribes of Israel. These stones will remind the people of what the Lord has done. In the future, when your children ask what these stones mean to you, you will tell them that the water of the Jordan stopped flowing when the Lord's Covenant Box crossed the river. These stones will always remind the people of Israel of what happened here.”

The men followed Joshua's orders. As the Lord had commanded Joshua, they took twelve stones from the middle of the Jordan, one for each of the tribes of Israel, carried them to the camping place, and put them down there. Joshua also set up twelve stones in the middle of the Jordan, where the priests carrying the Covenant Box had stood. (Those stones are still there.) 10 The priests stood in the middle of the Jordan until everything had been done that the Lord ordered Joshua to tell the people to do. This is what Moses had commanded.

The people hurried across the river. 11 When they were all on the other side, the priests with the Lord's Covenant Box went on ahead of the people. 12 The men of the tribes of Reuben and Gad and of half the tribe of Manasseh, ready for battle, crossed ahead of the rest of the people, as Moses had told them to do. 13 In the presence of the Lord about forty thousand men ready for war crossed over to the plain near Jericho. 14 What the Lord did that day made the people of Israel consider Joshua a great man. They honored him all his life, just as they had honored Moses.

15 Then the Lord told Joshua 16 to command the priests carrying the Covenant Box to come up out of the Jordan. 17 Joshua did so, 18 and when the priests reached the riverbank, the river began flowing once more and flooded its banks again.

19 The people crossed the Jordan on the tenth day of the first month and camped at Gilgal, east of Jericho. 20 There Joshua set up the twelve stones taken from the Jordan. 21 And he said to the people of Israel, “In the future, when your children ask you what these stones mean, 22 you will tell them about the time when Israel crossed the Jordan on dry ground. 23 Tell them that the Lord your God dried up the water of the Jordan for you until you had crossed, just as he dried up the Red Sea for us. 24 Because of this everyone on earth will know how great the Lord's power is, and you will honor the Lord your God forever.”

Luke 14:7-35

Humility and Hospitality

Jesus noticed how some of the guests were choosing the best places, so he told this parable to all of them: (A)“When someone invites you to a wedding feast, do not sit down in the best place. It could happen that someone more important than you has been invited, and your host, who invited both of you, would have to come and say to you, ‘Let him have this place.’ Then you would be embarrassed and have to sit in the lowest place. 10 Instead, when you are invited, go and sit in the lowest place, so that your host will come to you and say, ‘Come on up, my friend, to a better place.’ This will bring you honor in the presence of all the other guests. 11 (B)For those who make themselves great will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be made great.”

12 Then Jesus said to his host, “When you give a lunch or a dinner, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or your rich neighbors—for they will invite you back, and in this way you will be paid for what you did. 13 When you give a feast, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind; 14 and you will be blessed, because they are not able to pay you back. God will repay you on the day the good people rise from death.”

The Parable of the Great Feast(C)

15 When one of the guests sitting at the table heard this, he said to Jesus, “How happy are those who will sit down at the feast in the Kingdom of God!”

16 Jesus said to him, “There was once a man who was giving a great feast to which he invited many people. 17 When it was time for the feast, he sent his servant to tell his guests, ‘Come, everything is ready!’ 18 But they all began, one after another, to make excuses. The first one told the servant, ‘I have bought a field and must go and look at it; please accept my apologies.’ 19 Another one said, ‘I have bought five pairs of oxen and am on my way to try them out; please accept my apologies.’ 20 Another one said, ‘I have just gotten married, and for that reason I cannot come.’ 21 The servant went back and told all this to his master. The master was furious and said to his servant, ‘Hurry out to the streets and alleys of the town, and bring back the poor, the crippled, the blind, and the lame.’ 22 Soon the servant said, ‘Your order has been carried out, sir, but there is room for more.’ 23 So the master said to the servant, ‘Go out to the country roads and lanes and make people come in, so that my house will be full. 24 I tell you all that none of those who were invited will taste my dinner!’”

The Cost of Being a Disciple(D)

25 Once when large crowds of people were going along with Jesus, he turned and said to them, 26 (E)“Those who come to me cannot be my disciples unless they love me more than they love father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, and themselves as well. 27 (F)Those who do not carry their own cross and come after me cannot be my disciples. 28 If one of you is planning to build a tower, you sit down first and figure out what it will cost, to see if you have enough money to finish the job. 29 If you don't, you will not be able to finish the tower after laying the foundation; and all who see what happened will make fun of you. 30 ‘You began to build but can't finish the job!’ they will say. 31 If a king goes out with ten thousand men to fight another king who comes against him with twenty thousand men, he will sit down first and decide if he is strong enough to face that other king. 32 If he isn't, he will send messengers to meet the other king to ask for terms of peace while he is still a long way off. 33 In the same way,” concluded Jesus, “none of you can be my disciple unless you give up everything you have.

Worthless Salt(G)

34 “Salt is good, but if it loses its saltiness, there is no way to make it salty again. 35 It is no good for the soil or for the manure pile; it is thrown away. Listen, then, if you have ears!”

Psalm 80

A Prayer for the Nation's Restoration[a]

80 (A)Listen to us, O Shepherd of Israel;
hear us, leader of your flock.
Seated on your throne above the winged creatures,
reveal yourself to the tribes of Ephraim, Benjamin, and Manasseh.
Show us your strength;
come and save us!

Bring us back, O God!
Show us your mercy, and we will be saved!

How much longer, Lord God Almighty,
will you be angry with your people's prayers?
You have given us sorrow to eat,
a large cup of tears to drink.
You let the surrounding nations fight over our land;
our enemies insult us.

Bring us back, Almighty God!
Show us your mercy, and we will be saved!

You brought a grapevine out of Egypt;
you drove out other nations and planted it in their land.
You cleared a place for it to grow;
its roots went deep, and it spread out over the whole land.
10 It covered the hills with its shade;
its branches overshadowed the giant cedars.
11 It extended its branches to the Mediterranean Sea
and as far as the Euphrates River.
12 Why did you break down the fences around it?
Now anyone passing by can steal its grapes;
13 wild hogs trample it down,
and wild animals feed on it.

14 Turn to us, Almighty God!
Look down from heaven at us;
come and save your people!
15 Come and save this grapevine that you planted,
this young vine you made grow so strong!

16 Our enemies have set it on fire and cut it down;
look at them in anger and destroy them!
17 Preserve and protect the people you have chosen,
the nation you made so strong.
18 We will never turn away from you again;
keep us alive, and we will praise you.

19 Bring us back, Lord God Almighty.
Show us your mercy, and we will be saved.

Deuteronomy 34 - Joshua 2

The Death of Moses

34 Moses went up from the plains of Moab to Mount Nebo, to the top of Mount Pisgah east of Jericho, and there the Lord showed him the whole land: the territory of Gilead as far north as the town of Dan; the entire territory of Naphtali; the territories of Ephraim and Manasseh; the territory of Judah as far west as the Mediterranean Sea; the southern part of Judah; and the plain that reaches from Zoar to Jericho, the city of palm trees. (A)Then the Lord said to Moses, “This is the land that I promised Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob I would give to their descendants. I have let you see it, but I will not let you go there.”

So Moses, the Lord's servant, died there in the land of Moab, as the Lord had said he would. The Lord buried him in a valley in Moab, opposite the town of Bethpeor, but to this day no one knows the exact place of his burial. Moses was a hundred and twenty years old when he died; he was as strong as ever, and his eyesight was still good. The people of Israel mourned for him for thirty days in the plains of Moab.

Joshua son of Nun was filled with wisdom, because Moses had appointed him to be his successor. The people of Israel obeyed Joshua and kept the commands that the Lord had given them through Moses.

10 (B)There has never been a prophet in Israel like Moses; the Lord spoke with him face-to-face. 11 No other prophet has ever done miracles and wonders like those that the Lord sent Moses to perform against the king of Egypt, his officials, and the entire country. 12 No other prophet has been able to do the great and terrifying things that Moses did in the sight of all Israel.

God Commands Joshua to Conquer Canaan

After the death of the Lord's servant Moses, the Lord spoke to Moses' helper, Joshua son of Nun. He said, “My servant Moses is dead. Get ready now, you and all the people of Israel, and cross the Jordan River into the land that I am giving them. (C)As I told Moses, I have given you and all my people the entire land that you will be marching over. Your borders will reach from the desert in the south to the Lebanon Mountains in the north; from the great Euphrates River in the east, through the Hittite country, to the Mediterranean Sea in the west. (D)Joshua, no one will be able to defeat you as long as you live. I will be with you as I was with Moses. I will always be with you; I will never abandon you. (E)Be determined and confident, for you will be the leader of these people as they occupy this land which I promised their ancestors. Just be determined, be confident; and make sure that you obey the whole Law that my servant Moses gave you. Do not neglect any part of it and you will succeed wherever you go. Be sure that the book of the Law is always read in your worship. Study it day and night, and make sure that you obey everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. Remember that I have commanded you to be determined and confident! Do not be afraid or discouraged, for I, the Lord your God, am with you wherever you go.”

Joshua Gives Orders to the People

10 Then Joshua ordered the leaders to 11 go through the camp and say to the people, “Get some food ready, because in three days you are going to cross the Jordan River to occupy the land that the Lord your God is giving you.”

12 (F)Joshua said to the tribes of Reuben and Gad and to half the tribe of Manasseh, 13 “Remember how the Lord's servant Moses told you that the Lord your God would give you this land on the east side of the Jordan as your home. 14 Your wives, your children, and your livestock will stay here, but your soldiers, armed for battle, will cross over ahead of the other Israelites in order to help them 15 until they have occupied the land west of the Jordan that the Lord your God has given them. When he has given safety to all the tribes of Israel, then you may come back and settle here in your own land east of the Jordan, which Moses, the Lord's servant, gave to you.”

16 They answered Joshua, “We will do everything you have told us and will go anywhere you send us. 17 We will obey you, just as we always obeyed Moses, and may the Lord your God be with you as he was with Moses! 18 Whoever questions your authority or disobeys any of your orders will be put to death. Be determined and confident!”

Joshua Sends Spies into Jericho

(G)Then Joshua sent two spies from the camp at Acacia with orders to go and secretly explore the land of Canaan, especially the city of Jericho. When they came to the city, they went to spend the night in the house of a prostitute named Rahab. The king of Jericho heard that some Israelites had come that night to spy out the country, so he sent word to Rahab: “The men in your house have come to spy out the whole country! Bring them out!”

4-6 “Some men did come to my house,” she answered, “but I don't know where they were from. They left at sundown before the city gate was closed. I didn't find out where they were going, but if you start after them quickly, you can catch them.” (Now Rahab had taken the two spies up on the roof and hidden them under some stalks of flax that she had put there.) The king's men left the city, and then the gate was shut. They went looking for the Israelite spies as far as the place where the road crosses the Jordan.

Before the spies settled down for the night, Rahab went up on the roof and said to them, “I know that the Lord has given you this land. Everyone in the country is terrified of you. 10 (H)We have heard how the Lord dried up the Red Sea in front of you when you were leaving Egypt. We have also heard how you killed Sihon and Og, the two Amorite kings east of the Jordan. 11 We were afraid as soon as we heard about it; we have all lost our courage because of you. The Lord your God is God in heaven above and here on earth. 12 Now swear by him that you will treat my family as kindly as I have treated you, and give me some sign that I can trust you. 13 Promise me that you will save my father and mother, my brothers and sisters, and all their families! Don't let us be killed!”

14 The men said to her, “May God take our lives if we don't do as we say![a] If you do not tell anyone what we have been doing, we promise you that when the Lord gives us this land, we will treat you well.”

15 Rahab lived in a house built into the city wall, so she let the men down from the window by a rope. 16 “Go into the hill country,” she said, “or the king's men will find you. Hide there for three days until they come back. After that, you can go on your way.”

17 The men said to her, “We will keep the promise that you have made us give. 18 This is what you must do. When we invade your land, tie this red cord to the window you let us down from. Get your father and mother, your brothers, and all your father's family together in your house. 19 If anyone goes out of the house, his death will be his own fault, and we will not be responsible; but if anyone in the house with you is harmed, then we will be responsible. 20 However, if you tell anyone what we have been doing, then we will not have to keep our promise which you have made us give you.” 21 She agreed and sent them away. When they had gone, she tied the red cord to the window.

22 The spies went into the hills and hid. The king's men looked for them all over the countryside for three days, but they did not find them, so they returned to Jericho. 23 Then the two spies came down from the hills, crossed the river, and went back to Joshua. They told him everything that had happened, 24 and then said, “We are sure that the Lord has given us the whole country. All the people there are terrified of us.”

Luke 13:22-14:6

The Narrow Door(A)

22 Jesus went through towns and villages, teaching the people and making his way toward Jerusalem. 23 Someone asked him, “Sir, will just a few people be saved?”

Jesus answered them, 24 “Do your best to go in through the narrow door; because many people will surely try to go in but will not be able. 25 The master of the house will get up and close the door; then when you stand outside and begin to knock on the door and say, ‘Open the door for us, sir!’ he will answer you, ‘I don't know where you come from!’ 26 Then you will answer, ‘We ate and drank with you; you taught in our town!’ 27 (B)But he will say again, ‘I don't know where you come from. Get away from me, all you wicked people!’ 28 (C)How you will cry and gnash your teeth when you see Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and all the prophets in the Kingdom of God, while you are thrown out! 29 People will come from the east and the west, from the north and the south, and sit down at the feast in the Kingdom of God. 30 (D)Then those who are now last will be first, and those who are now first will be last.”

Jesus' Love for Jerusalem(E)

31 At that same time some Pharisees came to Jesus and said to him, “You must get out of here and go somewhere else, because Herod wants to kill you.”

32 Jesus answered them, “Go and tell that fox: ‘I am driving out demons and performing cures today and tomorrow, and on the third day I shall finish my work.’ 33 Yet I must be on my way today, tomorrow, and the next day; it is not right for a prophet to be killed anywhere except in Jerusalem.

34 (F)“Jerusalem, Jerusalem! You kill the prophets, you stone the messengers God has sent you! How many times I wanted to put my arms around all your people, just as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you would not let me! 35 (G)And so your Temple will be abandoned. I assure you that you will not see me until the time comes when you say, ‘God bless him who comes in the name of the Lord.’”

Jesus Heals a Sick Man

14 One Sabbath Jesus went to eat a meal at the home of one of the leading Pharisees; and people were watching Jesus closely. A man whose legs and arms were swollen came to Jesus, and Jesus spoke up and asked the teachers of the Law and the Pharisees, “Does our Law allow healing on the Sabbath or not?”

But they would not say a thing. Jesus took the man, healed him, and sent him away. (H)Then he said to them, “If any one of you had a child or an ox that happened to fall in a well on a Sabbath, would you not pull it out at once on the Sabbath itself?”

But they were not able to answer him about this.

Psalm 79

A Prayer for the Nation's Deliverance[a]

79 (A)O God, the heathen have invaded your land.
They have desecrated your holy Temple
and left Jerusalem in ruins.
They left the bodies of your people for the vultures,
the bodies of your servants for wild animals to eat.
They shed your people's blood like water;
blood flowed like water all through Jerusalem,
and no one was left to bury the dead.
The surrounding nations insult us;
they laugh at us and mock us.

Lord, will you be angry with us forever?
Will your anger continue to burn like fire?
Turn your anger on the nations that do not worship you,
on the people who do not pray to you.
For they have killed your people;
they have ruined your country.

Do not punish us for the sins of our ancestors.
Have mercy on us now;
we have lost all hope.
Help us, O God, and save us;
rescue us and forgive our sins
for the sake of your own honor.
10 Why should the nations ask us,
“Where is your God?”
Let us see you punish the nations
for shedding the blood of your servants.

11 Listen to the groans of the prisoners,
and by your great power free those who are condemned to die.
12 Lord, pay the other nations back seven times
for all the insults they have hurled at you.
13 Then we, your people, the sheep of your flock,
will thank you forever
and praise you for all time to come.

Deuteronomy 33:1-29, Luke 13:1-22, Psalms 78:59-72, Proverbs 12:25

Today is the 9th day of April. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian. It’s great to be here with you today. It’s a travel day. Heading back to the rolling hills of Tennessee. Had a great time in Washington yesterday at Columbia Community Church. Thanks for coming out and say hello. Good to see everybody again. And we’ll head back to Tennessee, get ready, and head Georgia for the More Gathering, which begins later this week in just a couple of days. So, that’s what’s behind us and that’s what’s before us. And here we are, where we are, taking the next step forward in the Scriptures We will be reading from the book of Deuteronomy today and then completing its tomorrow. From the Good News translation this week. Deuteronomy chapter 33.

Commentary:

Okay. So, we encounter this fascinating story in the book of Luke. And, so, every year when we pass by this I point out because it’s really interesting because it gives us this a rare glimpse of the kinds of things people were talking about. So, the kinds of things that would be passed around by word of mouth and then continue to be passed around and discussed. So, we would call this going viral today because there are those stories the kind of filter their way around the Internet and people talk about them. Obviously in Jesus time there was no Internet. So, things just got passed around from person to person and little traveling groups and work parties and any place that there would be a discussion. What’s interesting about these couple of incidents that are mentioned today in the gospel of Luke is how people make assumptions about God in them because they’re tragedies. And usually it’s a tragedy that finds its way into the news. So, the first thing that is brought to Jesus attention or that he mentions is the fact that some Jews from Galilee were in the temple complex in Jerusalem making sacrifice when this would’ve been at Passover, when essentially Roman special forces who had probably been tracking these guys and had some evidence that there was zealotry going on, that there was insurrection going on with these people, made a strategic attack. Like, they went in and took these people out because for the Romans, these people were terrorists. So, they went in and took them out. Now, because they were in the temple making sacrifice to the Lord they probably weren’t terrorists. They were probably devout Jewish people wanting the restoration of Israel. But is all starts looking murky because it just depends on how you’re looking at it and who you are in the story. But, in the end, the way that the whole thing gets framed is that these people who were killed in the temple must’ve been greater sinners than anyone else and God was judging them. And then the religious leaders in the temple also made tremendous accusations against Rome because they came in and killed these people mixing their blood with the blood of the sacrifice, a complete sacrilegious thing, a very defiling thing. So, I mean, man, if that happened today that would make international news. It’s that big of a story with all of the hooks for intrigue, right? There’s a lot of religious connotations here. There’s human blood being spilled in the temple, which would be outrageous to the Jewish people. And then there’s the way that the Romans are going to communicate this, that they just took out some bad guys, basically. And, so, the way that the news is spread is going to depend on who’s giving it to you. And even though they may have the facts of the case the way that it’s interpreted is going to be different depending on who you are. So, ya, we have a very complex story that has gone viral and it has made its way to Jesus, and Jesus comments on it, which makes it even more interesting because it captures a piece of the news. Like, we have some headlines from the first century. The second little bit of news is that a tower fell near a water source coming into Jerusalem and it killed 18 people when it fell down. The thing that draws those two stories in common is what people were saying. They were essentially saying that the tragedy that has befallen the people who were killed was because they were greater sinners than anyone else and God was judging them specifically in the moment. And that kind of thing is still in the world today. Every time there’s a weather tragedy or some sort of tragedy something happens that makes the news then what’s going to follow behind that are those people who would say that God is judging the people who had found or experienced tragedy. So, in other words, when sensational tragic things happen it is the hand of God’s judgment against specific people because God wants them to suffer publicly or specifically or horribly. So, the question then becomes, is that true? Is that how this all works? We turn on the news in the evening, we see the different things that are going on. We’re getting the news spun at us depending on where we are and what our position is. So, it’s being interpreted differently, but in the end we see tragedy and we say God is judging those people. Or even if we don’t say that we wonder about it. So, Jesus actually comments and He gives language to whether or not God is specifically singling out and judging people. Like this. Jesus asks, because those Galileans were killed in that way, do you think it proves that they were worse sinners than all other Galileans or what about those 18 people in Siloam who were killed when the tower fell on them? Do you suppose this proves that they were worse than all the other people living in Jerusalem? To both of those incidents Jesus says, no indeed. In other words, no that’s not what happened, that’s not how this works. And then Jesus tells those were listening to him, I tell you that if you do not turn from your sins, you will all die as they did. In other words, these incidents were not surgical strikes by God singling out very, very specific people so that they would die tragically and publicly. Rather, everyone’s heading in the same direction and bringing down judgment upon themselves. The only remedy is repentance because we’re creating our own destinies and they’re not going to end well if we do not change our minds about God, which is literally what repentance is. And Jesus is our invitation to change our minds about who we think God really is. So, God’s not a hot tempered sovereign who wakes up on the wrong side of the bed, flies into a rage, knocks towers over to kill people. Rather, God looks like Jesus and we’re invited to change our minds about him, to repent. And we can certainly consider to continue to blame God for things that he hasn’t done, which only makes us consider Him to be unpredictable and untrustworthy or we can change our minds. Repent. Rather than blaming God for all of the tragedy or all of the darkness in the world that he doesn’t have anything to do with, we should be looking for all of the light and life and good news in the world. That’s where we will find God at work. And that change of perspective draws us into trust and the correct way of viewing things. So, some things to think about today.

Prayer:

Father, we acknowledge we have wondered what You are and are not involved in. We have no shortage of news, no shortage of things going on, and usually it’s tragic in nature and it makes us wonder why You’re doing these things or why You’re allowing these things to happen. When a change of heart and mind, when repentance comes we begin to see Your work of good in the world and we realize we’ve been blaming You for things You didn’t do. So, we ask forgiveness. And we ask Your Holy Spirit to come, help us to reinterpret because so many things are being interpreted for us in so many ways and they sound like they’re right. And, so, we just buy them, but it ultimately makes us confused about what You are doing. And we have this perfect example of Jesus in this world and what He did and what He said. These are the kinds of things You are doing in the world. So, we choose to not only look for those things, but to participate in those things, as Your body the body of Christ in this world. Come, Holy Spirit. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hey there DAB community. This is Kerry C. I’m part of the Alabama’s Pelham praise party and am loving the Lord and experiencing new things in Him. And I have a prayer request. I want to lift up a very special person in my life who has brought the Lord back to my vision and given me some eyes of enlightenment where I desperately needed them. He’s a conduit of Jesus. He’s just really opened my world back up where it was just very closed off. And I just praise the Lord for loving my friend. My family and I just want to lift them up Lord and just ask that You give his family unity, Lord God that You open the eyes of the blind and that You bless Him now, bless her now, bless their son now. Lord God and bless every generation after Him Lord God. He keeps his family every day Lord God. And show Your love to them in Your exceedingly abundantly goodness, Your love and Your kindness Lord God. I just praise You for opening Him up and for us Lord God and I just ask You to please stay with Him every minute of the day and make Your face shine upon them. Sophie, I heard your call April 3rd at the end of the message, how much you’re struggling to just have the will to go on. And I just wanted you to know that I am with you, we are with you as a community, and we are praying that God will give you supernatural strength to go on and healing for your body, mind, and spirit. Isaiah 40:31, for we know that God hears your cries for help sister. And for those who hope in the Lord He will renew their strength. He will. Hang in their Sophie. Hey fellow DABbers. This is Robert from Indiana. And I know I am not very good at calling in and praying for people or asking for requests, but I just wanted to still call in and ask for prayers for…just everyone who is suffering…not suffering…just everyone who is having difficulty with unplanned pregnancy and young adults and teens and just all of that…all of those circumstances. So…just…I would appreciate your prayers and I appreciate everything that you guys do for me. So, I just want to let you know I love you guys and I think of you every single day. See ya.

Hey everybody this is Jay from…on the road. I’ve have been living in my car for the past three days now and it is surprisingly peaceful. I’m doing it by choice. My house is in Maryland but my job is New Jersey and it would be counterproductive for me to have two apartments or, you know, live in a hotel all week long. So, I’m trying it out. See how it’s working. And it’s actually working pretty well. The hardest part is finding somewhere to park at night we’re I’m not going to be kicked out. But pray for me for that and that I’m able to find a nice quiet spot to park in every night. And I go back to Maryland on Fridays, go to church and then come back to work on Monday morning. So. let’s pray. Heavenly Father we thank You so much for Your love, Your grace, Your mercy. Thank You, Father for just giving me peace and thank You for giving my friends and family in the Daily Audio Bible peace in their heart. Father, we pray right now that everyone within the sound of my voice, whatever is on their heart, whatever is troubling them, whatever has them to the point where they are stressed out or overwhelmed, that they’ll just take that to You and they’ll realize that You will take on that burden for them because You’re there You’re waiting. And we pray all these things in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

Hi Daily Audio Bible family. It is Bri calling for the first time and I just want to say I keep you all in my prayers. And __ I’m asking for God to guide me and for Jesus to show me my purpose as I’ve been in a job that is rooted in stress and negativity and I am seeking to fill my purpose in the kingdom of God. And I actually have been selected for University of Cambridge’s new Masters in accounting program. And the professor that she’s contacted me. However; I am looking at __ and they just watch and they don’t want me to…I feel like I can’t say…I feel like I can’t do anything besides look at and check financials. __ doesn’t rad and money. So I just ask that God guides me to a new job and that I can make a positive change in our world and connect more to our kingdom and move forward to bring newness and bring life and bring joy. I work in New York City in financial services and am a 22-year-old girl and I’m shaking now but…

Deuteronomy 26:1-27:26, Luke 10:38-11:13, Psalms 76:1-12, Proverbs 12:15-17

Today is the 8th day of April. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian. It’s great to be here with you. Coming to you today from the Pacific Northwest and the state of Washington. Here in the Tri-Cities, we’ll be speaking at Columbia Community Church this morning. Looking forward to that. Great to be here with you at the shiny, sparkly threshold of a brand-new week. And we’ve got a big week around here, but we’ll get to all of that in due course. We’re being a new week so we we’ll read from a new translation, The Good News translation this week. And we’re in the book of Deuteronomy and we’re getting very, very, near the end of the book of Deuteronomy and Moses is teaching a song. Deuteronomy chapter 32 verse 28 through 52 today.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You again, once again, for Your word. We thank You for the way that You move in and among us through Your word as Your Holy Spirit plants it in our lives, bringing up within us the fruit of the spirit. Thank You God that we see examples over and over again of Your kindness, Your long-suffering, Your patience, Your gentleness, Your grace. We also see examples of Your call, Your warning, Your correction, Your rebuke. We see that You father us through Your word. And we can certainly understand in our own lives when we listen and we don’t and where those paths lead, which is what Your word shows us, which is what the Scriptures continually teach us. We follow storylines into their conclusion and we see where those roads and those decisions left and we realize we’re reading our own story. And, so, Father, we invite Your Holy Spirit because we can’t tell this story without You. We were never meant to be in a story without You and we don’t have to be. So, come Holy Spirit as we approach and enter this new week. Lead us into all truth Holy Spirit as You’ve promised. Lead us deeper into fellowship, friendship and relationship with our Savior. Lead us on the narrow path that leads to life. We ask in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Then we’ll be heading back to Tennessee tomorrow.

Then this this Thursday is when the More Gathering for women begins in Georgia. So, we’re continuing to pray over that as a team, but we’re continuing to raise a canopy, a massive wall, dome over everything that’s going to happen through prayer, as a community. So, thank you for continuing to pray over that and all that it entails. Looking forward to that as well.

This is going to be a busy week. So prayers of the community over all the travel and all of it are appreciated.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hey everybody this is Pelham from Birmingham calling. It’s April 3rd and my prayer was played first and it just so happens to be my birthday today. I turn 40 today. Four Zero today. So, I wanted to call the community and reach out to you guys because it’s a joyous day. Of course Easter, two days ago, but it’s Easter. Every day we walk in Easter. And I pray that this call works. We’ve been having some tech issues. I tried to call and talk to China about how incredible she was and how I thought it was Jill and it was amazing and that she spoke to my heart and I wanted her to know that she is a powerful, powerful warrior and she affected me deeply. So, China that’s for you. I wanted to call for prayer for my best friend Alex W. and for any warriors out there that can pray for Alex W. to increase his knowledge and understanding, for the Lord to pour out knowledge and understanding through the world around him, through the way that the Lord whispers into our ear, a shout louder than any other can hear, the way he does it, you know how he does it. Do that for Alex. I need my best friend to wake up some things that we’re facing in marriage and some things that we’re facing in life. And it’s a process. I just wanted you all to be part of the process. I felt like I needed to let you know. And I want to thank everybody…

[singing]Our father who art in heaven hallowed be by name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven, give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil [singing ends]. Hey, everyone this is Mel from Central Florida and I’m just calling to say a big thank you to everybody who called in and prayed for me and for my insomnia. I also want to thank everybody who prayed on their own without calling for me. I know not everybody calls, obviously. And for me it took over a year to even try to call the Daily Audio Bible. I appreciate, honestly, I appreciate all your prayers and your thoughts and everything, good vibes, whatever you can send. I went to the doctor and she gave me some medication to try for a little bit and I’m going to go back to the doctor and discuss my options. It’s been helping…I mean…I’m sure the prayers…I know the prayers are helping. And, yeah, I mean there’s been a couple days where I don’t sleep great but most of the time there’s a lot more good days than bad. So, again I want to thank everybody. I really do appreciate it. And I want to just continue praying for anybody who has any sort of insomnia or sleep issues. And to start my call, I prayed the Our Father in song, which, to be honest, a lot of nights I just I just sing over and over when I can’t sleep and it brings me peace. So, I hope everybody is doing well and hope that little song helps somebody out there.

Hi this is Donna from Southern California. And I so enjoyed China’s reading yesterday. That was so much fun. And what a delightful, delightful person you are China. And Brian and Jill, you must be raising wonderful, wonderful girls. And I just was feeling so blessed that I never met you, but I feel like I knew you, you all are friends of mine. And I just wanted to say that. I really, really enjoyed that. I enjoyed the April fools little joke. It was great. And by the way you guys have incredible reading voices. It’s just incredible. How beautiful and lyrical your voices are. So, thank you so much for that and for giving us hope. I know this is the year of hope. And what I was wanting to lean toward quickly was, I listening to Lisa from Kansas prayer request, she’s struggling with depression, and then Sharon the Victorious, and I will still say your victorious, from Northern California, and also Stacy from Oregon. All of these ladies, like myself, who are they…they’re struggling. I too have been there. Let me tell you, I’ve been there. There’s nothing like going through a divorce after three decades of marriage and it can put you there. So, I know. But I have learned and what this program has given me, thankfully, is that we have a God that takes all of that and one day it will make some sense. Hang onto that hope. I really hope you will. We have a God who…

[singing]Jesus, you have one me. You have broken every chain with love and mercy. You have triumphed over death and you are worthy of glory and praise [singing ends]. Good day Daily Audio Bible family, this is Sherry calling from British Columbia Canada. Today is part two of my, I’m not really sure how many parts yet, to call in and talk about how I’ve made my work or my new job an idol. And I had talked the last time I called about realizing this through lent. God has been revealing sin in my life. And revealing that I had made my job my idol because I was spending a lot of time thinking about work and dreaming about work and excited to go back to work, rather than enjoying the time he gave me off work. So, I found a website that kinda gives you 10 reasons or 10 clues that something in your life might be becoming an idol. And, so, I just wanted to read them to you to see if maybe they’ll touch somebody else to show you what I’ve learned as well. So, number one is, it causes me to disobey God. Number two, it gives me greater joy than to Christ. Number three, it gives me the most excitement about the future. Number four, it is what I daydream about the most. Number five, it is what I most enjoy talking about. Number six, it is what I fear losing the most. Number seven, it is what I most enjoy reading about. Number eight, it is what I most love spending money on. Number nine, it is what I look to for heart rejuvenation. And number 10, it is what I most enjoy spending time on. And it doesn’t have to be all 10 of these it could be just be one of these things. So, for instance number two, it gives me greater joy than Christ. So, if I think of my job as giving me more joy than Christ, then it’s become an idol. I’ve run out of time but more to come later. Love you DAB.

The image there though you couldn’t get see
The film must be developed in a solution that will free it
And then a beautiful image of the picture you will see
These same truths that apply to film also apply to you and me
Wwe also bear an image of our God from above
Kindness, patients, joy, and peace, long-suffering, compassion, love
But unless you’re washed in Jesus’s blood and developed in His spirit
You’ll never see his image you can’t feel it or draw near it
We’re created in God’s image so God is clearly there
Your life is like a negative so handle it with care

blindony1016@gmail.com. Want to thank you once again Brian for this wonderful podcast for God’s Holy Spirit to flow. Keep it flowin’ y’all. All right. Bye-bye.

Deuteronomy 33

Moses Blesses the Tribes of Israel

33 These are the blessings that Moses, the man of God, pronounced on the people of Israel before he died.

The Lord came from Mount Sinai;
he rose like the sun over Edom
and shone on his people from Mount Paran.
Ten thousand angels were with him,
a flaming fire at his right hand.[a]
The Lord loves his people[b]
and protects those who belong to him.
So we bow at[c] his feet
and obey his commands.
We obey the Law that Moses gave us,
our nation's most treasured possession.
The Lord became king of his people Israel
when their tribes and leaders were gathered together.

Moses said about the tribe of Reuben:

“May Reuben never die out,
Although their people are few.”

About the tribe of Judah he said:

Lord, listen to their cry for help;
Unite them again with the other tribes.
Fight for them, Lord,
And help them against their enemies.”[d]

(A)About the tribe of Levi he said:

“You, Lord, reveal your will by the Urim and Thummim[e]
Through your faithful servants, the Levites;
You put them to the test at Massah
And proved them true at the waters of Meribah.
They showed greater loyalty to you
Than to parents, brothers, or children.
They obeyed your commands
And were faithful to your covenant.
10 They will teach your people to obey your Law;
They will offer sacrifices on your altar.
11 Lord, help their tribe to grow strong;
Be pleased with what they do.
Crush all their enemies;
Let them never rise again.”

12 About the tribe of Benjamin he said:

“This is the tribe the Lord loves and protects;
He guards them all the day long,
And he dwells in their midst.”[f]

13 About the tribe of Joseph he said:

“May the Lord bless their land with rain
And with water from under the earth.
14 May their land be blessed with sun-ripened fruit,
Rich with the best fruits of each season.
15 May their ancient hills be covered with choice fruit.
16 May their land be filled with all that is good,
Blessed by the goodness of the Lord,
Who spoke from the burning bush.
May these blessings come to the tribe of Joseph,
Because he was the leader among his brothers.
17 Joseph has the strength of a bull,
The horns of a wild ox.
His horns are Manasseh's thousands
And Ephraim's ten thousands.
With them he gores the nations
And pushes them to the ends of the earth.”

18 About the tribes of Zebulun and Issachar he said:

“May Zebulun be prosperous in their trade on the sea,
And may Issachar's wealth increase at home.
19 They invite foreigners to their mountain
And offer the right sacrifices there.
They get their wealth from the sea
And from the sand along the shore.”

20 About the tribe of Gad he said:

“Praise God, who made their territory large.
Gad waits like a lion
To tear off an arm or a scalp.
21 They took the best of the land for themselves;
A leader's share was assigned to them.
They obeyed the Lord's commands and laws
When the leaders of Israel were gathered together.”[g]

22 About the tribe of Dan he said:

“Dan is a young lion;
He leaps out from Bashan.”

23 About the tribe of Naphtali he said:

“Naphtali is richly blessed by the Lord's good favor;
Their land reaches to the south from Lake Galilee.”

24 About the tribe of Asher he said:

“Asher is blessed more than the other tribes.
May he be the favorite of his brothers,
And may his land be rich with olive trees.
25 May his towns be protected with iron gates,
And may he always live secure.”

26 People of Israel, no god is like your God,
riding in splendor across the sky,
riding through the clouds to come to your aid.
27 God has always been your defense;
his eternal arms are your support.
He drove out your enemies as you advanced,
and told you to destroy them all.
28 So Jacob's descendants live in peace,
secure in a land full of grain and wine,
where dew from the sky waters the ground.
29 Israel, how happy you are!
There is no one like you,
a nation saved by the Lord.
The Lord himself is your shield and your sword,
to defend you and give you victory.
Your enemies will come begging for mercy,
and you will trample them down.

Luke 13:1-21

Turn from Your Sins or Die

13 At that time some people were there who told Jesus about the Galileans whom Pilate had killed while they were offering sacrifices to God. Jesus answered them, “Because those Galileans were killed in that way, do you think it proves that they were worse sinners than all other Galileans? No indeed! And I tell you that if you do not turn from your sins, you will all die as they did. What about those eighteen people in Siloam who were killed when the tower fell on them? Do you suppose this proves that they were worse than all the other people living in Jerusalem? No indeed! And I tell you that if you do not turn from your sins, you will all die as they did.”

The Parable of the Unfruitful Fig Tree

Then Jesus told them this parable: “There was once a man who had a fig tree growing in his vineyard. He went looking for figs on it but found none. So he said to his gardener, ‘Look, for three years I have been coming here looking for figs on this fig tree, and I haven't found any. Cut it down! Why should it go on using up the soil?’ But the gardener answered, ‘Leave it alone, sir, just one more year; I will dig around it and put in some fertilizer. Then if the tree bears figs next year, so much the better; if not, then you can have it cut down.’”

Jesus Heals a Crippled Woman on the Sabbath

10 One Sabbath Jesus was teaching in a synagogue. 11 A woman there had an evil spirit that had kept her sick for eighteen years; she was bent over and could not straighten up at all. 12 When Jesus saw her, he called out to her, “Woman, you are free from your sickness!” 13 He placed his hands on her, and at once she straightened herself up and praised God.

14 (A)The official of the synagogue was angry that Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, so he spoke up and said to the people, “There are six days in which we should work; so come during those days and be healed, but not on the Sabbath!”

15 The Lord answered him, “You hypocrites! Any one of you would untie your ox or your donkey from the stall and take it out to give it water on the Sabbath. 16 Now here is this descendant of Abraham whom Satan has kept in bonds for eighteen years; should she not be released on the Sabbath?” 17 His answer made his enemies ashamed of themselves, while the people rejoiced over all the wonderful things that he did.

The Parable of the Mustard Seed(B)

18 Jesus asked, “What is the Kingdom of God like? What shall I compare it with? 19 It is like this. A man takes a mustard seed and plants it in his field. The plant grows and becomes a tree, and the birds make their nests in its branches.”

The Parable of the Yeast(C)

20 Again Jesus asked, “What shall I compare the Kingdom of God with? 21 It is like this. A woman takes some yeast and mixes it with a bushel of flour until the whole batch of dough rises.”

Psalm 78:65-72

65 At last the Lord woke up as though from sleep;
he was like a strong man excited by wine.
66 He drove his enemies back
in lasting and shameful defeat.
67 But he rejected the descendants of Joseph;
he did not select the tribe of Ephraim.
68 Instead he chose the tribe of Judah
and Mount Zion, which he dearly loves.
69 There he built his Temple
like his home in heaven;
he made it firm like the earth itself,
secure for all time.

70 (A)He chose his servant David;
he took him from the pastures,
71 where he looked after his flocks,
and he made him king of Israel,
the shepherd of the people of God.
72 David took care of them with unselfish devotion
and led them with skill.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Sunday April 8, 2018 (NIV)

Deuteronomy 32:28-52

28 “Israel is a nation without sense;
they have no wisdom at all.
29 They fail to see why they were defeated;
they cannot understand what happened.
30 Why were a thousand defeated by one,
and ten thousand by only two?
The Lord, their God, had abandoned them;
their mighty God had given them up.
31 Their enemies know that their own gods are weak,
not mighty like Israel's God.
32 Their enemies, corrupt as Sodom and Gomorrah,
are like vines that bear bitter and poisonous grapes,
33 like wine made from the venom of snakes.

34 “The Lord remembers what their enemies have done;
he waits for the right time to punish them.
35 (A)The Lord will take revenge and punish them;
the time will come when they will fall;
the day of their doom is near.
36 (B)The Lord will rescue his people
when he sees that their strength is gone.
He will have mercy on those who serve him,
when he sees how helpless they are.
37 Then the Lord will ask his people,
‘Where are those mighty gods you trusted?
38 You fed them the fat of your sacrifices
and offered them wine to drink.
Let them come and help you now;
let them run to your rescue.

39 “‘I, and I alone, am God;
no other god is real.
I kill and I give life, I wound and I heal,
and no one can oppose what I do.
40 As surely as I am the living God,
I raise my hand and I vow
41 that I will sharpen my flashing sword
and see that justice is done.
I will take revenge on my enemies
and punish those who hate me.
42 My arrows will drip with their blood,
and my sword will kill all who oppose me.
I will spare no one who fights against me;
even the wounded and prisoners will die.’

43 (C)“Nations, you must praise the Lord's people—
he punishes all who kill them.
He takes revenge on his enemies
and forgives the sins of his people.”

44 Moses and Joshua son of Nun recited this song, so that the people of Israel could hear it.

Moses' Final Instructions

45 When Moses had finished giving God's teachings to the people, 46 he said, “Be sure to obey all these commands that I have given you today. Repeat them to your children, so that they may faithfully obey all of God's teachings. 47 These teachings are not empty words; they are your very life. Obey them and you will live long in that land across the Jordan that you are about to occupy.”

48 (D)That same day the Lord said to Moses, 49 “Go to the Abarim Mountains in the land of Moab opposite the city of Jericho; climb Mount Nebo and look at the land of Canaan that I am about to give the people of Israel. 50 You will die on that mountain as your brother Aaron died on Mount Hor, 51 because both of you were unfaithful to me in the presence of the people of Israel. When you were at the waters of Meribah, near the town of Kadesh in the wilderness of Zin, you dishonored me in the presence of the people. 52 You will look at the land from a distance, but you will not enter the land that I am giving the people of Israel.”

Luke 12:35-59

Watchful Servants

35 (A)“Be ready for whatever comes, dressed for action and with your lamps lit, 36 (B)like servants who are waiting for their master to come back from a wedding feast. When he comes and knocks, they will open the door for him at once. 37 How happy are those servants whose master finds them awake and ready when he returns! I tell you, he will take off his coat, have them sit down, and will wait on them. 38 How happy they are if he finds them ready, even if he should come at midnight or even later! 39 (C)And you can be sure that if the owner of a house knew the time when the thief would come, he would not let the thief break into his house. 40 And you, too, must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you are not expecting him.”

The Faithful or the Unfaithful Servant(D)

41 Peter said, “Lord, does this parable apply to us, or do you mean it for everyone?”

42 The Lord answered, “Who, then, is the faithful and wise servant? He is the one that his master will put in charge, to run the household and give the other servants their share of the food at the proper time. 43 How happy that servant is if his master finds him doing this when he comes home! 44 Indeed, I tell you, the master will put that servant in charge of all his property. 45 But if that servant says to himself that his master is taking a long time to come back and if he begins to beat the other servants, both the men and the women, and eats and drinks and gets drunk, 46 then the master will come back one day when the servant does not expect him and at a time he does not know. The master will cut him in pieces[a] and make him share the fate of the disobedient.

47 “The servant who knows what his master wants him to do, but does not get himself ready and do it, will be punished with a heavy whipping. 48 But the servant who does not know what his master wants, and yet does something for which he deserves a whipping, will be punished with a light whipping. Much is required from the person to whom much is given; much more is required from the person to whom much more is given.

Jesus the Cause of Division(E)

49 “I came to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it were already kindled! 50 (F)I have a baptism to receive, and how distressed I am until it is over! 51 Do you suppose that I came to bring peace to the world? No, not peace, but division. 52 From now on a family of five will be divided, three against two and two against three. 53 (G)Fathers will be against their sons, and sons against their fathers; mothers will be against their daughters, and daughters against their mothers; mothers-in-law will be against their daughters-in-law, and daughters-in-law against their mothers-in-law.”

Understanding the Time(H)

54 Jesus said also to the people, “When you see a cloud coming up in the west, at once you say that it is going to rain—and it does. 55 And when you feel the south wind blowing, you say that it is going to get hot—and it does. 56 Hypocrites! You can look at the earth and the sky and predict the weather; why, then, don't you know the meaning of this present time?

Settle with Your Opponent(I)

57 “Why do you not judge for yourselves the right thing to do? 58 If someone brings a lawsuit against you and takes you to court, do your best to settle the dispute before you get to court. If you don't, you will be dragged before the judge, who will hand you over to the police, and you will be put in jail. 59 There you will stay, I tell you, until you pay the last penny of your fine.”

56 (A)But they rebelled against Almighty God
and put him to the test.
They did not obey his commandments,
57 but were rebellious and disloyal like their ancestors,
unreliable as a crooked arrow.
58 They angered him with their heathen places of worship,
and with their idols they made him furious.
59 God was angry when he saw it,
so he rejected his people completely.
60 (B)He abandoned his tent in Shiloh,[a]
the home where he had lived among us.
61 (C)He allowed our enemies to capture the Covenant Box,
the symbol of his power and glory.
62 He was angry with his own people
and let them be killed by their enemies.
63 Young men were killed in war,
and young women had no one to marry.
64 Priests died by violence,
and their widows were not allowed to mourn.

Deuteronomy 31:1-32:9, Luke 12:8-34, Psalms 78:26-45, Proverbs 12:21-23

Today is the 7th day of April. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian. It is a pleasure and an honor to be here with you today as we prepare to close down and release another week. So, yeah, we’re a whole week into the month of April now. When we left the month of March, we had reached the 25 percent mark. Twenty five percent of the way through the Scriptures. And now we’re a week beyond that. So, well done. We are well on our way. And there’s much out in front of us, but all we have to do is look back. Look back at the beginning of the year. Look at where we are now, not only in the Scriptures, but in our lives. And we’ve put enough effort and time into this to be able to see that this is shifting things. This is changing the way I look at things. This is making a rhythm in my life that is doing good inside of me. So, here we are at the end of another week. We’ve been reading from the English Standard Version this week, which is what we’ll do today. Deuteronomy chapter 31 verse 1 through 32:27. And we’re nearing the end of the book of Deuteronomy. Just a couple more days and we will be reaching the end of the Pentateuch or the Torah. So, let’s dive in. Deuteronomy.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for another week in Your Word. We thank You for the celebration of Easter that began this week. We continue to glory in the fact that You came for us and would not abandon us and will not abandon us. The joy of our salvation is ours. But all we have to do is choose life. So, Father, as we release this week and it becomes a part of our history, we look forward with great anticipation to all that is in store for us as we continue to journey through the Scriptures and as we continue to make choices that are life giving in collaboration and in relationship with You. We love You, Father. We worship You. We are grateful for everything, including our lives. Come, Holy Spirit, into this day. In Jesus name. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hello. This is Julia from Des Moines. I’m calling for Sophie from Oregon. Sophie, your heart sounds so broken. I just want…I’ve been lifting you up in prayer…and I just want you to know that Jesus has been exactly where you are. In the garden of Gethsemane, He was broken and tired and He poured from an empty cup and He knew what was coming. And girl, just hold on. Your Savior knows. He knows where you are. And He’s got a light shining at the end of the tunnel for you. He just does. You are in such a deep dark forest but just trust. Trust that God has it. And when you can trust it’s time to reach out. It’s time to find help. Find some church ladies who will make you dinner and find somebody who will listen to you. I’ve been through a dark season recently and that’s what saved me. I mean it was…it was just grace that they would come in and wrap me in love with just meals and doing my dishes. So, honey, I just encourage you reach out. Find those who love you. And you know that we are all here for you too. Bye.

Hey DAB. This is Marsha in Minnesota and I just listened to April 3rd and I’m just so taken aback by Sophie in Oregon. I know what you’re going through and I am so sorry. And I am praying for strength and I am sending you strength, and you can go on another day. I know you going do that. Okay. So, hang in there darling. And I can just feel Jesus’ arms around you giving you strength and love. So, hang in there. I’ll get better. Bye.

Hi family. This is Salvation is Mine in San Angelo California. Let’s pray. Dear heavenly Father, we come before You, requesting that a blessing be sent down right now Lord. So many of us are in trouble Lord, whether it’s mental, physical, financial, or emotionally. We are in trouble Lord and __ so deep in our soul Lord that we can even find that place, but You are there Lord. You are there in this place for us. You are our Savior. You are our God. You are a mentor. You are our Father. You are a mother, You’re our sister, our brother, our pastor. Oh, heavenly Father, we reach out to You, we are on our knees, we are laying prostrate before You Lord God because we have nothing left in us for ourselves Lord God, but we know You are there and You will help us and You will keep us and You will hold us. And yes, even mold us to what You want us to be. Help us to relinquish self, Lord God. Help us to focus on You and Your word and Your love for God. Oh, Father God we praise You for the blessing that You’re going to send out. We thank You for the mercy and the grace that we get every single morning when we wake up Lord God. We thank You for every blessing in our body that doesn’t belong to us but belongs to You Lord God. Oh, Father God You are the Alpha and the Omega of all things Lord God. There is no God before You and there is no God after You. We praise You Lord God. We thank You. And we just at continue to ask for that blessing. And we ask that blessing in faith Lord God. No doubt will enter us Lord God. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen. Thank You for praying with me family. This is Salvation is Mine.

Hello Daily Audio Bible. My name is Davis. This is my first time calling in. This is my first year listening to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m calling for Sharon the Victorious. I heard your prayer request and I just wanted to let you know that it might not seem like you’re victorious right now but you just need to be reminded that as long as you are with God and God is with you, you are always victorious. And I have seen so many cases like this where your life is just going down the toilet and it just seems hopeless but I’ve also seen so many bounce back up. And, so, as long as God is with you, I have faith that things are going to turn out well. And no matter what happens, I know that it’s all part of God’s plan and I know that He has so much more for you than this because you have such a big heart putting others so, without hesitance, before yourself. So, I just want to pray for you. Dear Lord, please put Your hand of blessing on Sharon and her family. Please give Your hand of healing to her husband with his back and especially help her daughter and touch her heart and her mind. Please show her Your love and Your peace and Your wisdom. Please give her the courage to step out of this…

Good afternoon Daily Audio Bible family. This is Lee from New Jersey. Long time no speak to. Today is April 3rd and it is about 12 noon, a little later that. And I just wanted to call and give everyone an update. I finally found a job, thank God for that. Not only did I find a job, it’s more than what I expected. In so many ways more than I deserve. I’ve said that before, so I’m going to try not to say that. And you know, just God is great. God is great. It was funny because I went to…this whole month of Lent…basically…I’ve been out of work. I’ve been able to go to masses…actually…for daily and had the host daily. I also went to confession, being I’m Catholic. And during confession the priest was telling me that, you know, that when God gives, he gives, you know, all of His bountiful riches, His treasures. And it was on a Thursday, it was Holy Thursday and I went to confession. And like a few hours after that I got a phone call from one employer and with their offer and it felt just like that. It felt like God opened His treasures and He just dumped them on me. And I’m just so grateful for that. So, grateful for all of you praying for me as well. And we are family. We thank you all very, very much. So, I will be calling back soon. Everything is going well. I did fight through and I feel…at least for me…I conquered some bouts of depression and some bouts of anger and all of that stuff. So, dealing with a few little things, but not as severe as before. Thank God for that. So, every day is better. And just want to say, God bless you all and I’ll be calling back soon.

Deuteronomy 29:1-30:20, Luke 11:37-12:7, Psalms 78:1-25, Proverbs 12:19-20

Today is the 6th day of April. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian. It’s great to be here with you. Sorry about that. You caught me mid sip, you caught me mid sip of coffee but were all set now for the next step forward into the Scriptures this year. Continuing through the book of Deuteronomy for the next few days as we listen to the final things that Moses has to say to the children of Israel before he steps into the background and Joshua takes center stage. Deuteronomy chapter 29 and 30 today.

Commentary:

Alright. So, we reach a pinnacle moment in the book of Deuteronomy and really a pinnacle moment in everything Moses ever had to say to his people. And it’s very, very poignant for our own lives, but to put ourselves in the context we have to remember, all that we have done as we have journeyed with Moses through this story up until today, right? This little baby that was put in a wicker basket that was rescued by Pharaoh’s daughter, like, his whole life has been lived and he‘s seen unbelievable things - the redemption of a people brought out of slavery in Egypt, across the Red Sea, through the desert, and Moses has endured long and love this people. And they have been incredibly frustrating people to lead. Not just because they’re a stubborn or stiff necked by nature, but because they needed to be changed completely at the identity level. All they had ever known was slavery and now they have a society of their own, governed by laws given by God. The only thing they lack is a homeland and they are on the cusp of it. This is not unlike our own lives. We find ourselves stubborn and stiff necked and going our own way and complaining and grumbling and considering the good old days. And anything and everything we’ve talked about is with gone on this journey together. And, so, we are at the end of Moses life, and he’s pleading with the people before he recedes into history, before he takes his own last breath. He tells them what they need to hear most and we need to hear this just as much. Moses said, for this commandment that I command you today is not too hard for you. Neither is it far off. It’s not in heaven, right? That someone will be able to say, who can go to heaven and get it for us so that we can hear and do it? It’s not on the other side of the sea that someone will say, who’s going to go over there and get it and bring it so we can hear and do it? But the word is very near you. It is in your mouth and in your heart so that you can do it. So, let’s not just read this as words spoken by an ancient prophet in ancient times. Let’s listen to this. I have set before you today life and good, death and evil. I call heaven and earth to witness against you today that I have set before you, life and death, blessing and curse. Therefore, choose life, that you and your offspring may live loving the Lord your God, obeying his voice and holding fast to him, for he is your life in length of days. It feels just as immediate now as it would’ve felt to the children of Israel out on the other side of the Jordan River listening to Moses. This has always been the choice. And can we point out something that’s, like, obvious and sitting right in front of us? It’s a choice. It’s not a threat. It’s a choice. It’s an invitation. It’s an invitation into a collaboration with God. He’s given us his word. He’s given us the counsel of His Holy Spirit. He’s given us the life and sacrifice of His son. What else could God do to lay it out for the children of Israel and to lay it out for us? As we move through the Scriptures we can see very, very clearly that God is unwilling to surrender people to the darkness, that He is unwilling to abandon us, that He is unwilling to be left out of the story because he loves us. And now the choice is ours. It’s like He laid it all out and said here you go. It’s all yours. It’s all free. It’s a gift. It’s your choice. So, all we have to do is begin to examine our own lives because the shape that our lives are in and the shape that our life is taking is completely made up of the choices that we have made. And it’s not too hard for us. And it’s not up in heaven or across the ocean that we can’t know it. It’s right here. The word is very near you, Moses said. It’s in your mouth and your heart so that you can do it. Can we say that again? You can do it. Can we say that again? You can do it. Right? Altogether now, I can do it. I can choose life, but I have to choose and that is a choice that is made year by year, month by month, week by week, day by day, minute by minute, second by second. It’s not a one-off thing. It’s the continual choices that we make, the kind of choices that we make in a relationship. So, we can look at the rules and say, like, these are a lot of rules and I don’t know if I can keep all these rules or we can understand, when you fall in love with somebody you follow the rules. You come to a point where you are unwilling to break the heart of the one that you love because the relationship is bringing life and your better off together than you ever could be part. You come to the point where you realize this. And you’re not consulting rules anymore. Everything becomes apparent because of love. So, Moses in ancient times is speaking this over the people. And we’ll get to see the kind of choices that they will make and where those roads lead but all we have to do is review our own lives. Review the last year. Review the last five years and we’ll see that we are, right now, where we are because of the choices that we have made. The counsel of the Scripture is you can do it. Choose life.

Prayer:

Father, we welcome You into this thought. We invite Your Holy Spirit to begin to speak to us, revealing ways that we’ve chosen anything but life and blamed you for it. We’re sorry about that. We’ve apologized about this before. We’re inviting you into this because it’s so starkly stated, this is not too hard. It is a choice and we choose life. And that will require that we walk the narrow path that leads to life. And we will only ever find and navigate that path through the power of Your Holy Spirit. So, we invite Your Holy Spirit to come. In all of the things that we have to choose and do today we ask that You bring to mind the question, am I choosing life in this? Come, Holy Spirit. We ask in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Then on the 12th of April, which is what, six days from now? The More Gathering for women begins in Georgia. And as a community we’ve been praying over that for a while now and we want to continue to pray over the hearts of all of the women, over all of the travel, over all of the weather, over all of the technology, over everything, the entire camp, the entire event. So, as the Holy Spirit brings that to mind and you remember it, thank you for your prayers of intercession over it. As I’ve said many times, that makes all of the difference. So, that’s coming up pretty quick and we want to continue to pray over that.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hi family. This is Judy in Salt Lake City. I’m calling to ask for prayer. My husband Steve had a stroke yesterday. We didn’t know that that’s what it was. He got really super, super sick and he was vomiting and everything and he wouldn’t go to the hospital and finally I got him to go and they did tests and couldn’t figure out what was wrong and finally they did an MRI and found out that he had a stroke in his cerebellum, it’s in the back of the head. They are monitoring him now and treating him to keep the swelling down to try to avoid having to have surgery and take a piece of his skull out and allow the brain to swell if it’s needed. So, please pray that that surgery isn’t necessary and that he pulls through okay. I don’t know what I will do. Well, I guess I don’t have to explain. You guys all understand I’m feeling right now and I appreciate all your prayers. We pray along with you guys every single day. So, thank you. Thank you, thank you for praying. And God bless each and every one of you. Love you.

Monica in Kentucky, prayer for your friend. Steve, thank you for your calls. We truly love you. I just love hearing the sound of your voice. Scott in Houston, your father passed away. Just want to let you know that I’m praying for you and lifting you up. Amy S., and that she can’t sleep and that she turns fully to the Lord and also for your coworker daughter whose name is Sophie. Shantay, thank you for your praise report, that nothing happened to you and your family. God was truly providing a hedge of protection over you and your home. Jeff your call about your wife Margo with ovarian cancer, it was so poignant and so beautiful. Please let her know that she is being coveted by hundreds of thousands of people. John16, I think that’s what your name is, you called and mimicking our prayers. I love it. It was hilarious. If there’s one thing that this community does, we know there are times for laughter and we know there are times for prayer and sorrow and I appreciated so much your message. Pelham, I just want to let you know that you are being coveted by the blood of Jesus, you and Molly, thanking God for all he’s doing in your lives. Blind Tony praying for you. Wayne in Maine. I want you to know that I am still praying for you and your family as you mourn your nephew, I think his name was Nicholas. I just can’t imagine what they’re going through but know that God is there. Victoria S. Just thank you so much thank you. Thank you for your healing. Your voice sounds like it’s back to normal. And just to everyone in the community, I love you. This community is so blessed. We are so blessed to have Brian and Jill Hardin and all the people behind the scenes that make the DAB happen. For all of you who don’t hear you names being called, please know you are being lifted up. You are being prayed over. God knows what we all need. I thank you all for your prayers for me and my family regarding a second Baby G and we’ll be moving to our new home soon. I love you all. Cheers. Asia in Munich.

Hey DAB family this is Byron out in Florida. A shout out to Rebecca in Michigan. Rebecca, I was leaving my house this morning. When I go to work, it’s before dawn. It’s dark outside. And I was trying through my neighborhood. And it’s kind of tough because there’s all this due and missed on my windshield that I just can’t seem to get off. So, I can’t really see very clearly, but clearly enough just to drive through. I’m going through my neighborhood and I see this piece of trash in the middle-of-the-road, which is not unusual, and I’m just going to drive over it but something just called up to me to just slow down. And I slowed down and stopped in front of it. And sure enough, there are two little bunny ears poking up, and a little bunny. And I’ve never seen a bunny in my neighborhood. So, the little bunny just stands there for a minute and he goes hopping off and away. And that reminded me of your call that I heard the other day about the forest creatures getting in the way of your drive. And, so, I just sent up a little prayer for you that the Lord will watch over you and protect you. I love you very much for the Rebecca. I love you too. God bless you all. Talk to you later.

Good morning Daily Audio Bible community. This is Diane O. B. from Newburgh Indiana and it is 5:38 on April the 3rd, 2018. I’m calling into pray for a lady. I’m pretty sure she was on the March 27th program about her husband and her daughter and a son. And the daughter has been addicted to drugs but had to be out of the house. And the daughter has bipolar. So, my husband is here and he is a very strong Christian and he’s agreeing with me for this mother and for her child. I have particular concern because I’m bipolar. I’m 68. I have a son who is 37, a daughter who’s 38, and a daughter who’s 40. And the son, we had to kick him out. He’s not bipolar but I am. And this woman just touched my heart. And, honey, I don’t know what your name is but my husband and I are praying for you and your daughter. And we will pray. We will mention her in our prayers and you and your whole family because I know what you’ve been through. He’s now in rehab, has been in rehab for over a month and many tears we cried. We had to let him go…

Hey good morning DAB family. This is Brandon from South Carolina. Hey, just wanted to call in this morning and let you know Sophie from Oregon, that I was listening to the prayers and the requests and I heard you cry. And just so you know sister, you are not alone. You are being prayed for. You touched my heart. And just as Brian says at the beginning of the call in line, you do not have to carry this on your own. You are being prayed for. You’re being lifted up. So, I wanted to let you know that and encourage you in that way. I’m praying for you today as well as all the others who call in and that putt themselves out there, you are being prayed for. I wanted to add a special request for my dear sister down in Houston Texas who’s going through a really rough season. She just lost her home back in the hurricane season down in Houston to hurricane Harvey. She’s still not back in her home from that water damage and being destroyed. And the month after that she found out that she has a rare form of liver cancer and her mother got diagnosed with the same cancer. They had a disease in their liver they knew could potentially lead to this but it has formed into cancer. Her mother just passed away from it and the doctors are not giving her a good outlook. So, really just a little rough time. I do ask for all of my DAB family to lift up Micah from Houston in your prayers. And just pray for her, that God touch her. The doctors are telling her that the only hope that she has is that they can find a liver for her now, a liver transplant. So were praying for that, praying that God can heal her and lifting her up. And I know we need all the…
