2 Samuel 2:12-3:39

12 Abner son of Ner and the followers of Ishbosheth son of Saul went out from Mahanaim to Gibeon. 13 Joab son of Zeruiah and the followers of David went out and confronted them at the pool[a] of Gibeon. They took up positions on the opposite sides of the pool.

14 Abner said to Joab, “The young men should get up and compete in front of us.”

Joab said, “Yes, let them do so.”

15 So twelve representatives for Benjamin and Ishbosheth son of Saul got up and crossed over to confront twelve representatives for David. 16 Each one grabbed his opponent’s head and thrust his sword into his side. Together, they all fell. So that place, which is near Gibeon, was called Helkath Hatsurim.[b] 17 A fierce battle took place that day. Abner and the men of Israel were beaten by the followers of David.

18 Three sons of Zeruiah were there, namely, Joab, Abishai, and Asahel. Asahel was a fast runner, like one of the gazelles out in the fields. 19 Asahel pursued Abner and did not turn aside to the right or to the left from his pursuit.

20 Abner looked behind him and said, “Is that you, Asahel?”

He said, “Yes, it is.”

21 Abner said to him, “Turn to your right hand or to your left and capture one of the young men for yourself and strip off his equipment for yourself.” But Asahel would not turn aside.

22 So Abner warned him again, “Turn aside. Stop following me. Why should I strike you to the ground? How could I face Joab your brother?” 23 But Asahel refused to turn aside, so Abner struck him in the stomach with the pointed butt of his spear. The spear came out his back, and he fell down and died right there. Everyone stopped and just stood there when they came to the place where Asahel had fallen and died.

24 But Joab and Abishai keep pursuing Abner. The sun was going down when they came to the hill of Ammah in front of Giah, on the way to the wilderness of Gibeon. 25 The Benjaminites rallied together behind Abner, joined in one formation, and took their stand on the top of one hill.

26 Abner called to Joab, “Will the sword continue to devour? Do you not know that it will be bitter when all this is over? How long will you delay telling the people to stop pursuing their brothers?”

27 Joab said, “As God lives, if you had not spoken, surely it would have been morning before the people would have given up pursuing their brothers.” 28 So Joab blew the ram’s horn, and all the people stopped pursuing Israel. They did not continue to fight.

29 Abner and his men traveled through the Arabah all that night. They crossed the Jordan, marched through the entire region of Bithron,[c] and came to Mahanaim.

30 Joab returned from pursuing Abner and gathered together all his troops. Besides Asahel, nineteen of David’s men were missing. 31 The followers of David had struck dead three hundred sixty of Abner’s men from the tribe of Benjamin. 32 The men of Judah picked up Asahel and buried him in the tomb of his father at Bethlehem.

Joab and his men marched all night and arrived at Hebron as it was becoming light.

The war between the house of Saul and the house of David lasted a long time. David kept getting stronger, and the house of Saul kept getting weaker.

David’s Sons

Sons were born to David at Hebron. His firstborn was Amnon, who was born to Ahinoam from Jezre’el. His second was Kileab, who was born to Abigail, the widow of Nabal from Carmel. The third was Absalom, who was the son of Ma’akah, the daughter of Talmai king of Geshur. The fourth was Adonijah, the son of Haggith. The fifth was Shephatiah, the son of Abital. The sixth, Ithream, was born to David’s wife Eglah. These were born to David in Hebron.

Abner and Ishbosheth

While the war was going on between the house of Saul and the house of David, Abner kept gaining power within the house of Saul.

Saul had a concubine named Rizpah daughter of Aiah. Ishbosheth said to Abner, “Why have you gone to the concubine of my father?”

Abner became very angry because of the words of Ishbosheth and said, “Am I a dog’s head that belongs to Judah? To this day I have acted with loyalty toward the house of your father Saul, to his relatives, and to his friends. In addition, I have not handed you over to David, but today you make accusations against me concerning this woman! May God punish me severely and double it,[d] if I do not do for David what the Lord has sworn about him 10 by transferring the kingdom from the house of Saul and establishing the throne of David over both Israel and Judah, from Dan to Beersheba.” 11 Ishbosheth was not able to say anything to Abner anymore because he was afraid of him.

Abner and David

12 Abner sent messengers on his behalf to David. They said, “Whose land is it? Make a covenant with me. Look, my hand is with you to turn the allegiance of all Israel to you.”

13 David said, “Good. I will make a covenant with you, but I require one thing from you. You will not see my face unless you bring to me Michal, the daughter of Saul, when you come.”

14 David sent messengers to Ishbosheth, Saul’s son. They delivered this demand: “Give me my wife Michal, whom I obtained as my wife with a hundred foreskins of the Philistines.”

15 Ishbosheth sent and took her away from her husband, Paltiel son of Laish. 16 Her husband accompanied her to Bahurim, weeping all the way, but Abner told him, “Go back,” so he went home.

17 Abner also delivered the following message to the elders of Israel: “Day after day you have been seeking to have David as king over you. 18 Now do it, because the Lord said to David, ‘By the hand of my servant David I will rescue[e] my people Israel from the hand of the Philistines and from the hand of all their enemies.’”

19 Abner also spoke to the tribe of Benjamin. Then he spoke to David in Hebron about everything that Israel and all the house of Benjamin had approved.

20 Abner and twenty men along with him came to David at Hebron, and David held a feast for Abner and his men. 21 Abner said to David, “I will go and gather all Israel to my lord the king. They will make a covenant with you. You will rule over all that your heart desires.” David sent Abner away in peace.

Abner and Joab

22 Just then the soldiers of David and Joab came back from a raid. They brought a large amount of plunder with them. Abner was no longer with David in Hebron, because David had sent him away in peace. 23 When Joab and all the army with him arrived, Joab was informed that Abner son of Ner had come to the king and that David had sent him away in peace.

24 So Joab went to the king and said, “What have you done? Abner came to you. Why have you sent him away? You let him get away! 25 You know that Abner son of Ner came to deceive you and to learn about your comings and goings and everything that you are doing.”

26 Joab left David and sent messengers after Abner. They brought him back from the cistern at Sirah without David’s knowledge. 27 So Abner returned to Hebron, and Joab took him aside into the gatehouse to speak with him. There he stabbed him in the stomach. So Abner was killed because of the blood of Joab’s brother Asahel.

28 Afterward David heard about it and said, “I and my kingdom are guiltless before the Lord forever concerning the blood of Abner son of Ner. 29 May his blood splash down on the head of Joab and on the entire house of his father. May the house of Joab never lack a man who has an oozing sore, who is a leper, who holds a spindle,[f] who falls by the sword, or who has no bread.”

30 Joab and his brother Abishai killed Abner because he had caused the death of their brother Asahel during the battle at Gibeon.

31 David said to Joab and to all the people who were with him, “Tear your clothing. Put on sackcloth and mourn for Abner.” King David walked behind the stretcher[g] that was carrying his body. 32 They buried Abner at Hebron, and the king wept loudly at the grave of Abner. All the people also wept. 33 The king lamented over Abner, “Should Abner have died as a fool dies? 34 Your hands were not tied up, and your feet were not bound with iron shackles. You have fallen as one falls before the wicked.” All the people continued to weep over him.

35 All the people came to try to persuade David to eat on that day, but David swore, “May God punish me severely and double it, if I taste bread or anything else before the sun goes down.”

36 All the people took notice and approved of this, as they approved of everything that the king did. 37 All the people, all Israel, knew on that day that it was not the king’s idea to kill Abner son of Ner. 38 The king said to his servants, “Do you not know that a great commander has fallen this day in Israel? 39 Today I am weak, even though I am the anointed king. These men, the sons of Zeruiah, are too hard for me. I pray that the Lord will pay back the evildoer in proportion to his wickedness.”

John 13:1-30

No Greater Love—in Service

13 Before the Passover Festival, Jesus knew that the time had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved those who were his own in the world, he loved them to the end.[a]

By the time the supper took place, the Devil had already put the idea into the heart of Judas, son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus.

Jesus knew that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going back to God. He got up from the supper and laid aside his outer garment. He took a towel and tied it around his waist. Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.

He came to Simon Peter, who asked him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?”

Jesus answered him, “You do not understand what I am doing now, but later you will understand.”

Peter told him, “You will never, ever, wash my feet!”

Jesus replied, “If I do not wash you, you have no part with me.”

“Lord, not just my feet,” Simon Peter replied, “but also my hands and my head!”

10 Jesus told him, “A person who has had a bath needs only to wash his feet, but his body is completely clean. And you[b] are clean, but not all of you.” 11 Indeed, he knew who was going to betray him. That is why he said, “Not all of you are clean.”

12 After Jesus had washed their feet and put on his outer garment, he reclined at the table again. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked them. 13 “You call me Teacher and Lord. You are right, because I am. 14 Now if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. 15 Yes, I have given you an example so that you also would do just as I have done for you. 16 Amen, Amen, I tell you: A servant is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17 If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them.

18 “I am not talking about all of you. I know those I have chosen. But this is so that the Scripture may be fulfilled: ‘One who eats bread with me has raised his heel against me.’[c] 19 I am telling you this right now before it happens, so that when it does happen, you may believe that I am he.

20 “Amen, Amen, I tell you: Whoever receives anyone I send, receives me. And whoever receives me, receives the one who sent me.”

Who Is the Betrayer?

21 After saying this, Jesus was troubled in his spirit and testified, “Amen, Amen, I tell you: One of you will betray me.”

22 The disciples were looking at each other, uncertain which of them he meant.

23 One of his disciples, the one Jesus loved, was reclining at Jesus’ side. 24 So Simon Peter motioned to him to find out which one he was talking about.

25 So leaning back against Jesus’ side, he asked, “Lord, who is it?”

26 Jesus replied, “It is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread, after I have dipped it in the dish.” Then he dipped the piece of bread and gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. 27 As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him.

So Jesus told him, “What you are about to do, do more quickly.”

28 None of those reclining at the table understood why Jesus said this to him. 29 Because Judas kept the money box, some thought that Jesus was telling him, “Buy what we need for the Festival,” or to give something to the poor. 30 As soon as Judas had taken the bread, he went out. And it was night.

Psalm 119:1-16

Psalm 119

The Great Psalm on the Law of the Lord[a]

Aleph: Blessed Are the Blameless

How blessed are those who are blameless in their way,
who walk in the law[b] of the Lord.
How blessed are those who keep[c] his testimonies.
With all their heart they seek him.
Indeed, they do no wrong.
They walk in his ways.
You have commanded that your precepts[d] be kept completely.
If only my ways were unwavering in keeping your statutes![e]
Then I would not be put to shame when I consider all your commands.
I will thank you with an upright heart
as I learn your righteous judgments.[f]
I will keep your statutes.
Do not abandon me completely.

Bet: Hidden in My Heart

How can a young man keep his path pure?
By guarding it with your words.[g]
10 With all my heart I seek you.
Do not let me stray from your commands.
11 I have hidden your sayings[h] in my heart,
so that I may not sin against you.
12 Blessed are you, O Lord!
Teach me your statutes.
13 With my lips I tell about all the judgments
that come from your mouth.
14 I rejoice in the way that is taught by your testimonies
as much as I delight in all riches.
15 I will meditate on your precepts,
and I will consider your paths.
16 In your statutes I delight.
I will not forget your words.

Footnotes:

  1. Psalm 119:1 Psalm 119, the longest chapter in the Bible, is a lengthy meditation on the characteristics and blessings of God’s Word. God’s Word is praised 176 times (22 × 8). Eight different names for God’s Word appear repeatedly throughout the psalm (laws, testimonies, precepts, statutes, commands, judgments, words, sayings). Though many of these terms sound like legal terms, they are all names for God’s whole Word. Each of the 22 letters of the Hebrew alphabet is represented by an eight-line stanza. All eight lines of each stanza begin with the appropriate Hebrew letter. The letter names are listed in the stanza headings.
  2. Psalm 119:1 Law in the Old Testament is often used in a wide sense as a name for God’s whole Word. It may refer to teaching of various kinds.
  3. Psalm 119:2 Or guard
  4. Psalm 119:4 Or regulations or rules
  5. Psalm 119:5 Or instructions
  6. Psalm 119:7 Or rulings or ordinances
  7. Psalm 119:9 Or word. In this psalm there are many textual variants between singular and plural forms of word. The translation does not note them all.
  8. Psalm 119:11 Or message. Many translate this as promise, but it is the common Hebrew root for say. Sometimes, of course, God’s sayings are promises.

2 Samuel 1:1-2:11, John 12:20-50, Psalm 118:19-29, Proverbs 15:27-28

Today is the 22nd day of May welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I’m Brian it is wonderful, it is a joy to be here with you as we bring another week to its conclusion and…and release it. It becomes a part of the past and we keep moving forward, day-by-day but here we are at the end of a week and it’s been a wonderful week as we’ve continued to examine the life of King Saul, Israel’s 1st king. Of course, yesterday in our reading Saul died in battle along with his 3 sons on Mount Gilboa in a battle with the Philistines. Now, we’re moving into 2 Samuel.

Introduction to the book of Second Samuel:

And as we’ve talked about in the past there was no Frist and Second Samuel originally. This was all 1 manuscript, First and Second Samuel and First and Second Kings, all one big manuscript but they’re broken apart and First and Second Samuel are kind of broken apart at a place where Saul’s reign has ended because he’s died and so Second Samuel now focuses on upon the character David. This little shepherd boy who became a national hero after killing Goliath and then had to grow up so fast under the spotlight and just become a cunning warrior just to stay alive because the King wanted him dead. Well now the King is dead and David is alive and David was supposed to be fighting in that battle where Saul lost his life but he was supposed to fight as a Philistine because he had defected to the Philistines to try to stay alive, to try stay out of Saul’s grasp. But then once they gave him shelter, they expected to allegiance and so he and his men were to go in battle but the Philistines freaked out and sent David home because they’re like, “we’re going into battle with his…with his own countrymen so if he turns on us and starts slaying us from within, like he’s just gonna endear…like they’re gonna receive him back.” So, David got back to his town Ziklag and it had been raided and everybody had been taken. And, so, that’s a bad day. They had to travel 3 days just to get back home away from the battle lines and then they found everything was gone. And, so, they had to go in pursuit, which they’ve done and everything has been recovered. And, so, just to kind of give us the big broad scope here as we go into Second Samuel, Saul died on Mount Gilboa which is basically in the Jezreel Valley up in the north not…not too far south of the Sea of Galilee. Whereas Ziklag is way down in the transitioned zone into the…into the desert. And, so, David is in Ziklag, he’s recovered all of the property that was stolen from them and Saul is dead on Mount Gilboa. The news of…of the defeat of the Israelites hasn’t reached David in the Philistine territory yet. And that’s precisely where we are as we begin 2 Samuel. And, so, let’s dive in. We’re reading from the English Standard Version this week, which is today, Second Samuel chapter 1, verse 1 through 2 verse 11.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word and another week. We thank You for another week and we thank You for another week in the scriptures and we thank You for all that we learn, week-by-week, day-by-day, this slow methodical step-by-step accumulation. It just continues to transform us as we learn and as things seep into our hearts and begin to transform the way we’re looking at things and the way we’re reacting to things. We are so grateful. And, so, come Holy Spirit and continue this work as we continue to surrender ourselves to You and the work that You are doing within us. Come lead into all truth, we pray. In the mighty name of Jesus, we ask. Amen.

Prayers and Encouragement:

Good morning Daily Audio Bible family this is James from the beautiful Northeast Georgia mountains. This is…like to pray for Noah who called in today and talked about his addiction to pornography. And Noah you…you can get passed this. It’s a very dark place. I…I would encourage you to use some prayer and fasting and…and just want to encourage with a…a verse it’s Psalm 101 and verses 3 and 4. It’s says I will set nothing wicked before my eyes, I hate the work of those who fall away, it shall not cling to me. A perverse heart shall depart from me, I will not know wickedness. So, what I’d encourage you to do with this Noah, is to print it out. I used a little label maker for myself, I put it on the bathroom mirror, the car mirror, my windshield any…my workstation, I put it everywhere. And every time I saw it, I read it and I…I prayed it and, in the mornings, when I went to bed and I did that for a long time and I still do it. So, I love you brother and you can get through this, I’m gonna be praying for you. And God bless you.

Hi neighbors, this is Lisa the Encourager I hope you all are doing very well. I wanted to call and pray for a couple of the DABbers that were going through some difficult things. Ashley called in from California and her dad had a stroke. And Ashley, I just want you to know that I’m praying for you and your dad and that his recovery and that he will have a complete recovery and be able to…have rehabilitation so that this mild stroke doesn’t impact his life and that he will be able to be there for you and you’ll be able to love on him for many, many more years. And I also want to pray for Beloved in Texas. And I definitely…my heart is just broken for you and what you’re dealing with, with your 13-year-old daughter contemplating anorexia and eating disorder and trying to navigate through that with a counselor that has her best interest at heart and also to do it in a loving and Christian way. I’m just praying for you Beloved in Texas and I’m going to be thinking about your daughter too and praying that her heart will be stronger, and she will love herself and that she will grow out of this…that it won’t impact her for a lengthy period of time and that you will get the resources that you need to help her. And I’m also praying for Norman. I know you have cancer Norman. And I am so happy that you’re at peace in your heart for your…you know where your heart is with Christ, but I am praying that…

Hey DABbers it’s Laurie from Central Ohio and I wanted to call in, I know so many are facing different things and I wanted to pray for you. So, regardless of what you are struggling with be it medical issues or addiction to alcohol, drugs, porn, sex, food…whether you struggle with loneliness, self-doubt, depression, whatever…whatever it is, anything that you are facing this prayer is for you. Dear Jesus, I come to You to lift up each of those listening and their families. Lord, You know each of them by their name. You know what each is facing and whatever it is God, please work in each of our lives. May we sense Your love and guidance. May our loved ones come to know You personally. May we be Your light to others. In Your name we pray. Amen. Until next time know that I am…

Hey family it’s Jesse from Washington. I just wanted to call in and thank everybody for their advice and for their prayers. It’s really like lit a new fire under me. I…I missed, I’ve been behind, I’ve been so busy cause my dad’s in the hospital and my grandma’s whatever…everyone’s getting better by the way so thank you for your prayers. My dad’s making a lot of progress, he’s getting out of the rehab facility tomorrow. My grandma is in a lot better spirits and we figured out that, you know, if we get a massage therapist to come to her house, I know they’re opening back up, she thinks that would really, you know, make her feel a lot better so I pray for us to find a massage therapist that will take her insurance and come by a couple times a week. But yeah, just thank you for your prayers and your advice, like I said, I thought I missed it, or I thought that my call was to whiney or needy and they didn’t play it or something, I don’t know. And, so, I guess I just totally missed it and then I missed the…the weekly, the weekend thing last week and I’m halfway through it and man, its overwhelming. I love you guys. I thank you so much. And I knew no matter what that people would be praying for me even if they didn’t hear my prayers. I know God, you know, knows that…that at least I burned a calorie and asked for prayers. But it’s really awesome to hear you guys praying for me. And I love you. Thank you so much guys. Alright. Bye.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Saturday May 22, 2021 (NIV)

2 Samuel 1:1-2:11

David Hears of Saul's Death

After the death of Saul, when David had returned (A)from striking down the Amalekites, David remained two days in Ziklag. And on the third day, behold, (B)a man came from Saul's camp, (C)with his clothes torn and dirt on his head. And when he came to David, (D)he fell to the ground and paid homage. David said to him, “Where do you come from?” And he said to him, “I have escaped from the camp of Israel.” And David said to him, (E)“How did it go? Tell me.” And he answered, “The people fled from the battle, and also many of the people have fallen and are dead, and Saul and his son Jonathan are also dead.” Then David said to the young man who told him, “How do you know that Saul and his son Jonathan are dead?” And the young man who told him said, (F)“By chance I happened to be on Mount Gilboa, and there was Saul leaning on his spear, and behold, the chariots and the horsemen were close upon him. And when he looked behind him, he saw me, and called to me. And I answered, ‘Here I am.’ And he said to me, ‘Who are you?’ I answered him, ‘I am an Amalekite.’ And he said to me, (G)‘Stand beside me and kill me, for anguish has seized me, and yet my life still lingers.’ 10 So I stood beside him and killed him, because I was sure that he could not live after he had fallen. (H)And I took the crown that was on his head and the armlet that was on his arm, and I have brought them here to my lord.”

11 Then David took hold of his clothes and (I)tore them, and so did all the men who were with him. 12 And they mourned and wept (J)and fasted until evening for Saul and for Jonathan his son and for the people of the Lord and for the house of Israel, because they had fallen by the sword. 13 And David said to the young man who told him, “Where do you come from?” And he answered, “I am the son of a sojourner, an Amalekite.” 14 David said to him, “How is it you were not (K)afraid to put out your hand to destroy (L)the Lord's anointed?” 15 Then (M)David called one of the young men and said, “Go, execute him.” And he struck him down so that he died. 16 And David said to him, (N)“Your blood be on your head, for your own mouth has testified against you, saying, ‘I have killed (O)the Lord's anointed.’”

David's Lament for Saul and Jonathan

17 And David (P)lamented with this lamentation over Saul and Jonathan his son, 18 and he said it[a] should be taught to the people of Judah; behold, it is written in (Q)the Book of Jashar.[b] He said:

19 “Your glory, O Israel, is slain on your high places!
(R)How the mighty have fallen!
20 (S)Tell it not in Gath,
(T)publish it not in the streets of Ashkelon,
(U)lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice,
lest the daughters of (V)the uncircumcised exult.

21 (W)“You mountains of Gilboa,
let there be no dew or rain upon you,
nor fields of offerings![c]
For there the shield of the mighty was defiled,
the shield of Saul, not (X)anointed with oil.

22 “From the blood of the slain,
from the fat of the mighty,
(Y)the bow of Jonathan turned not back,
and the sword of Saul returned not empty.

23 “Saul and Jonathan, beloved and lovely!
In life and in death they were not divided;
they were (Z)swifter than eagles;
they were (AA)stronger than lions.

24 “You daughters of Israel, weep over Saul,
who clothed you luxuriously in scarlet,
(AB)who put ornaments of gold on your apparel.

25 (AC)“How the mighty have fallen
in the midst of the battle!

“Jonathan lies slain on your high places.
26 I am distressed for you, my brother Jonathan;
very pleasant have you been to me;
(AD)your love to me was extraordinary,
surpassing the love of women.

27 (AE)“How the mighty have fallen,
and the weapons of war perished!”

David Anointed King of Judah

After this David (AF)inquired of the Lord, “Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah?” And the Lord said to him, “Go up.” David said, “To which shall I go up?” And he said, “To (AG)Hebron.” So David went up there, and (AH)his two wives also, Ahinoam of Jezreel and Abigail the widow of Nabal of Carmel. And David brought up (AI)his men who were with him, everyone with his household, and they lived in the towns of Hebron. And the men of Judah came, and there they anointed David (AJ)king over the house of Judah.

When they told David, (AK)“It was the men of Jabesh-gilead who buried Saul,” David sent messengers to the men of Jabesh-gilead and said to them, (AL)“May you be blessed by the Lord, because you showed this loyalty to Saul your lord and buried him. Now may the Lord show steadfast love and faithfulness to you. And I will do good to you because you have done this thing. Now therefore let your hands be strong, and be valiant, for Saul your lord is dead, and (AM)the house of Judah has anointed me king over them.”

Ish-bosheth Made King of Israel

But (AN)Abner the son of Ner, commander of Saul's army, took Ish-bosheth the son of Saul and brought him over to (AO)Mahanaim, and he made him king over Gilead and the Ashurites and Jezreel and Ephraim and Benjamin and all Israel. 10 Ish-bosheth, Saul's son, was forty years old when he began to reign over Israel, and he reigned two years. But the house of Judah followed David. 11 (AP)And the time that David was king in Hebron over (AQ)the house of Judah was seven years and six months.

John 12:20-50

Some Greeks Seek Jesus

20 Now (A)among those who went up to worship at the feast were some (B)Greeks. 21 So these came to (C)Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and asked him, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.” 22 Philip went and told (D)Andrew; Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. 23 And Jesus answered them, (E)“The hour has come (F)for the Son of Man to be glorified. 24 Truly, truly, I say to you, (G)unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. 25 (H)Whoever loves his life loses it, and (I)whoever (J)hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. 26 If anyone serves me, he must (K)follow me; and (L)where I am, there will my servant be also. (M)If anyone serves me, (N)the Father will honor him.

The Son of Man Must Be Lifted Up

27 (O)“Now is my soul troubled. And what shall I say? ‘Father, (P)save me from (Q)this hour’? But (R)for this purpose I have come to (S)this hour. 28 Father, glorify your name.” Then (T)a voice came from heaven: “I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.” 29 The crowd that stood there and heard it said that it had thundered. Others said, (U)“An angel has spoken to him.” 30 Jesus answered, (V)“This voice has come for your sake, not mine. 31 (W)Now is the judgment of this world; now will (X)the ruler of this world (Y)be cast out. 32 And I, (Z)when I am lifted up from the earth, (AA)will draw (AB)all people to myself.” 33 He said this (AC)to show by what kind of death he was going to die. 34 So the crowd answered him, “We have heard from the Law that (AD)the Christ remains forever. How can you say that (AE)the Son of Man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of Man?” 35 So Jesus said to them, (AF)“The light is among you (AG)for a little while longer. (AH)Walk while you have the light, lest darkness (AI)overtake you. (AJ)The one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going. 36 While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become (AK)sons of light.”

The Unbelief of the People

When Jesus had said these things, he departed and hid himself from them. 37 Though he had done so many signs before them, they still did not believe in him, 38 (AL)so that the word spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled:

(AM)“Lord, who has believed what he heard from us,
and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?”

39 Therefore they (AN)could not believe. For again Isaiah said,

40 (AO)“He has blinded their eyes
and (AP)hardened their heart,
lest they see with their eyes,
and understand with their heart, and turn,
and I would heal them.”

41 Isaiah said these things because (AQ)he saw his glory and (AR)spoke of him. 42 Nevertheless, (AS)many even of the authorities believed in him, but (AT)for fear of the Pharisees they did not (AU)confess it, so that they would not be (AV)put out of the synagogue; 43 (AW)for they loved the glory that comes from man more than the glory that comes from God.

Jesus Came to Save the World

44 And Jesus cried out and said, (AX)“Whoever believes in me, believes not in me but (AY)in him who sent me. 45 And (AZ)whoever (BA)sees me sees him who sent me. 46 (BB)I have come into the world as light, so that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness. 47 If anyone (BC)hears my words and does not keep them, (BD)I do not judge him; for (BE)I did not come to judge the world but to save the world. 48 (BF)The one who rejects me and does not receive my words has a judge; (BG)the word that I have spoken will judge him (BH)on the last day. 49 For (BI)I have not spoken on my own authority, but the Father (BJ)who sent me has himself given me (BK)a commandment—what to say and what to speak. 50 And I know that his commandment is eternal life. What I say, therefore, I say as the Father has told me.”

Psalm 118:19-29

19 (A)Open to me the gates of righteousness,
that I may enter through them
and give thanks to the Lord.
20 This is the gate of the Lord;
(B)the righteous shall enter through it.
21 I thank you that (C)you have answered me
(D)and have become my salvation.
22 (E)The stone that the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone.[a]
23 This is the Lord's doing;
it is marvelous in our eyes.
24 This is the day that the Lord has made;
let us rejoice and be glad in it.

25 Save us, we pray, O Lord!
O Lord, we pray, give us success!

26 (F)Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!
We (G)bless you from the house of the Lord.
27 The Lord is God,
and he has made (H)his light to shine upon us.
Bind the festal sacrifice with cords,
up to (I)the horns of the altar!

28 You are my God, and I will give thanks to you;
you are my God; I will (J)extol you.
29 (K)Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;
for his steadfast love endures forever!

1 Samuel 29:1-31:13, John 11:55-12:19, Psalm 118:1-18, Proverbs 15:24-26

Today is the 21st day of May welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I’m Brian it is wonderful to be here with you today as we bring to a close another work week. We’re actually bringing to a close another one of the books that we get to read together. We’ve been working our way through 1 Samuel, as…as we all know learning about King Saul, getting to know David. After we learned Samuel him…himself, his story, the final judge of Israel and the prophet and priest of God. So, we will conclude 1 Samuel today and then move into 2 Samuel tomorrow. So, today we’re reading from the English Standard Version. 1 Samuel 29, 30 and 31.

Commentary:

Okay. So, we conclude the book of 1 Samuel and release that. We’ll move into 2 Samuel tomorrow and we can see there’s kind of a line here between these, even though they were one manuscript, there’s kind of a line here. Saul, the King, the 1st King of Israel, has fallen dead on Mount Gilboa. So, as his life comes to an end that’s how 1 Samuel comes to an end and then we’ll focus upon David and his ascension to the thrown, which does not just happen by default, that is actually a…a process because Israel’s King is dead. Alright, so their 1st king but the King is dead, and the Princes are dead. What’s supposed to happen is that the kingdom is supposed to…to pass to the next son, they’re dead so this creates a power vacuum that David has to find himself in. So, David’s kind of gotten sucked into this whole story and his life has radically changed and we’ll focus on that as we go forward. But let’s remember now as we say goodbye to Saul for this time through the scriptures, let’s remember what we’ve learned because Saul was a very insecure person, a good-looking man, looked the part, domineering, all of that but…but deep inside himself very insecure and that led to paranoia and erratic behavior and just all kinds of stuff that we…that we witnessed. And we even examined our own lives while we were going through that because we like to think that we’re the mighty warriors but that’s only sometimes like once in a while. But often we…we can find that the same kinds of fears that…that Saul had inside of our own lives. It’s just that they ran away with Saul and just pulled him in so many profoundly unhealthy directions. And, so, we…we release that story.

And speaking of erratic, paranoid, strange behavior that’s what we see shaping up in the book of John. They want Jesus dead and they have already determined like it’s better that He’s dead then everybody’s dead. And we can see like the…the struggle that they’re in because they got this…the whole political power with the Roman Empire, all this power sharing going on between the Sanhedrin and the Romans as long as…as long as the religious leaders of the Jews can keep people under control then they can have their religion. And, so, they’re like, “yeah, Jesus just has to be sacrificed because everybody’s going after Him. And He doesn’t seem to want to go to war with the Romans. So, everybody’s going after Him and who knows what’s going to happen. It’s better that He’s dead than all of us are dead.” And now Jesus is back in Jerusalem and He’s with Lazarus. And, so, they’re like, “this…this guy that Jesus raised from the dead we’ve got to kill Him the second time because his witness is making everybody go after Jesus.” So, it’s a bit erratic. You have a person in your midst performing miracles in the name of God but…but just not playing by all of your rules and…and definitely flying in the face of some of them and challenging them and yet the people are flocking to the…to this person. And then He raises someone from the dead. And you would think, you would think that at that point everybody would have to stop for a second and go like, “wait, we need to really talk this through because like if we kill Lazarus after he’s been resurrected what’s to say that he’s not gonna rise from the dead again.” Like, they’re just trying to figure out a way to do away with Jesus, do away with Lazarus get this whole thing behind them, let this vanish into the past so that everybody can return to the status quo before Jesus, which of course the world never did. It still hasn’t. But that’s where we find ourselves in the book of John and we’re beginning to kinda turn the corner toward home. And it will be the last journey. I’ve mentioned it each time that we go…you know, through any of these important stories in the gospels that we pay attention, that we…that we don’t just think to ourselves, “I’ve heard this a thousand times”, that we actually truly engage because once we leave the gospels, we won’t be in this territory anymore for the rest of the year. We’ve got plenty of ground to cover. It’s not like we’re…we’re not gonna have anything to talk about, but it’s a really, really beautiful, special time of the year when we go through the gospels and we begin our year that way and then we just walk with Jesus all the way in…into the warmer weather at least here in the northern hemisphere. And, so, that’s kinda where we’re…where we’re at. We’re moving our way through the final of the gospels. And, so, let’s pay attention.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word every single day and we thank You for each other most every single day. It’s Your word and us together moving through the scriptures that has become such a profound thing in each of our lives over these years. And, so, we thank You for that and we ask that You plant the scriptures in our hearts and that they would be cultivated, that we would collaborate in cultivating…that we might become mature and strong and aware and awake, have our eyes opened and our ears opened so that we are very clear on our path as we walk with You through this life. Come Holy Spirit we pray. In the name of Jesus, we ask. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hi family this is Soaring on Eagles Wings from Canada. Just finished listening to the community prayers for March 8th and I heard Angel Heart. And I sense you are in a desperate place, unable to figure out what’s happening to you. I don’t understand it, but I do know that the Spirit of God lives within you and inside of you. Where the Spirit of God dwells, no other spirit can reside. The enemy bombards our mind day and night trying to defeat us with thoughts of…of negative issues preventing us from recognizing who we are in Christ and also who’s we are. So, you get dressed, you’re in a war, you need your helmet of salvation that so…that he…he may knock on your armor…helmet but he can’t enter. Put on your breast plate of righteousness, your shield of faith, your sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Your belt of truth of who you are, and your feet shod with the gospel of peace. You will not be defeated. And if you need to go and get some counseling, go ahead. But I am praying and asking our Abba Father to reach down and touch you and remove all these issues that are blocking your…your…your vision and…and your hearing. May he open up your eyes to the truth. And family she needs to be…have prayers every single day so that she can hear it, so that she can know that we are standing with her and no enemy’s going to defeat her. So, in the name of Jesus I pray that whatever is causing you, all those issues and confusion we’ll be destroyed in the name of Jesus. We’re praying for you. I love you sister. I’ll pray for you…

Oh Dwayne, I heard the anguish and pain in your heart that only God our Father can truly understand. Lord, You see Your servant Dwayne and he is hurting tremendously for his son. The righteous cried out and the Lord hears and delivers them over the farthest travels. The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart and save such as have a contrite spirit. Heavenly Father, I pray today, and I ask You Lord God that You would put your righteous right hand around the shoulder of this father who’s hurting so badly, who is crying out for help for his son, Nathan. Lord, wherever Nathan is at this moment I pray God that You would reach down your hands Lord and speak to his heart Lord, give him a receptive heart to receive Your love Lord. Lord I pray also that you will comfort this father Lord and help him to continue to trust in You because You are God, You are the God that parted the Red Sea and there’s nothing impossible for You to do. Thank You for what You are going to do for this family.

Hi, this is Diane from Pennsylvania. I’m calling in a prayer request for my husband Dave. Over the past year he has had esophagectomy surgery and he had some margins that still had cancer. So, he’s been going through rounds of chemotherapy since November. And we just got the test results that didn’t work. So, I’m praying for wisdom for the doctors and us as we navigate what to do next. We are putting it all in the Lords hands and whatever He has for us. His will be done. But I…we’ve been married for 53 years and it’s hard. So, I’m just calling in and thanking you for your prayers. I love you and I thank you and I love you Jesus, thank you.

Hello Daily Audio Bible family this is Guardian from New England. I just got done listening to the…the May 17th podcast and I’ve been a listener for…this is my 5th year now. And I have to say they’re have been many, many times when…Brian, when I…when I’ve listened to your…your…your teaching at the end of the readings and I’ve been just amazed and awe struck by the way you boil the message down to its essence and really drive the point home and sometimes hit me right between the eyes. And today was one of those days. I just wanted to say how much I…I loved your…your message about us and the boxes we make for God and…and then us trying to stuff Him into those boxes. And, so…so, I just wanted to say thank you for that and…and also for your beautiful words about, you know, look for…look for the light, look for where the love is growing and…and that’s where the kingdom of heaven is here, you know, where it’s coming here on earth. And, so, thank you Brian for that. And again, this is long overdue because you’ve had so many of those moments for me over the last 5 years. So, thank you for that and in…in my remaining time here I just want to say I heard the request for prayer for Julianna, the women who’s 7 months pregnant and in the hospital with…with COVID pneumonia. So, I just wanna say a prayer for her. So, Father we lift up Julianna in prayer and we hope…we pray that You could bring her healing from COVID so that she could get back home and finish up her pregnancy in the comfort of her own home and with her family and so she can be back home and with her husband and their other child. So, we…we pray this in Jesus’ name. Amen. And thank you all everybody have a blessed day.

Good morning today is May 19th, 2021 this is New Vision calling out of New York. I’m calling just to uplift a caller, I don’t know the young man’s name, but he called in and he wanted prayer because of pornography. And I know he said he knows a lot of men who was suffering from this. I want to tell you that it’s not just men, it’s women, it’s not just young people, it’s old people. And brother you got this. Know that that feeling and that urge anytime it comes up, there is a way of escape, okay? And I need for you to stand fast. I also need you to guard your gates. For me they were little things that lead up to me getting to that point, certain music that I would listen to, certain people I would be around, it led to that. So, know that you have to guard your gates. I also wanted to pray for a young lady that said she was doing a marathon and she needed prayer. The fact that God placed you in that arena, please know that you are number 1 every day. You’ve already one the biggest race and that’s the race for Jesus. I also wanted to pray for those who are suffering from mental health. I work in law enforcement and a lot of times I see people who are incarcerated and their suffering from mental issues, they don’t need to be locked up. There are children, adults and children, who have never dealt with trauma in their life and the only thing they know to do is to act out, so they’re arrested for it. But they’re a lot of people walking around undiagnosed with mental health. So, I just want us to really just keep those people in prayer everyday those who are suffering from depression and trauma and a spirit of rejection and abandonment and it comes out in other forms. So, thank you I love you all, I love the DAB family. God Bless. Pray for me and I will be continuing to pray for you. Amen.

1 Samuel 29-31

The Philistines Reject David

29 (A)Now the Philistines had gathered all their forces at (B)Aphek. And the Israelites were encamped by (C)the spring that is in (D)Jezreel. As (E)the lords of the Philistines were passing on by hundreds and by thousands, and David and his men were passing on in the rear (F)with Achish, the commanders of the Philistines said, “What are these Hebrews doing here?” And Achish said to the commanders of the Philistines, “Is this not David, the servant of Saul, king of Israel, who has been with me (G)now for days and years, and since he deserted to me (H)I have found no fault in him to this day.” But (I)the commanders of the Philistines were angry with him. And the commanders of the Philistines said to him, “Send the man back, that he may return (J)to the place to which you have assigned him. He shall not go down with us to battle, (K)lest in the battle he become an adversary to us. For how could this fellow reconcile himself to his lord? Would it not be with the heads of the men here? Is not this David, of whom they sing to one another in dances,

(L)‘Saul has struck down his thousands,
and David his ten thousands’?”

Then Achish called David and said to him, (M)“As the Lord lives, you have been honest, and to me it seems right that (N)you should march out and in with me in the campaign. For I have found nothing wrong in you from the day of your coming to me to this day. Nevertheless, the lords do not approve of you. So go back now; and go peaceably, that you may not displease the lords of the Philistines.” And David said to Achish, “But what have I done? What have you found in your servant from the day I entered your service until now, that I may not go and fight against the enemies of my lord the king?” And Achish answered David and said, “I know that you are as blameless in my sight (O)as an angel of God. Nevertheless, (P)the commanders of the Philistines have said, ‘He shall not go up with us to the battle.’ 10 Now then rise early in the morning (Q)with the servants of your lord who came with you, and start early in the morning, and depart as soon as you have light.” 11 So David set out with his men early in the morning to return to the land of the Philistines. But the Philistines went up to (R)Jezreel.

David's Wives Are Captured

30 Now when David and his men came to (S)Ziklag on the third day, (T)the Amalekites had (U)made a raid against the Negeb and against Ziklag. They had overcome Ziklag and burned it with fire and taken captive the women and all[a] who were in it, both small and great. They killed no one, but carried them off and went their way. And when David and his men came to the city, they found it burned with fire, and their wives and sons and daughters taken captive. Then David and the people who were with him raised their voices and wept until they had no more strength to weep. David's (V)two wives also had been taken captive, Ahinoam of Jezreel and Abigail the widow of Nabal of Carmel. And David was greatly distressed, for the people spoke (W)of stoning him, because all the people were bitter in soul,[b] each for his sons and daughters. But David strengthened himself in the Lord his God.

(X)And David said to Abiathar the priest, the son of Ahimelech, “Bring me the ephod.” So Abiathar brought the ephod to David. (Y)And David inquired of the Lord, “Shall I pursue after this (Z)band? Shall I overtake them?” He answered him, “Pursue, for you shall surely overtake (AA)and shall surely rescue.” So David set out, and (AB)the six hundred men who were with him, and they came to the brook Besor, where those who were left behind stayed. 10 But David pursued, he and four hundred men. (AC)Two hundred stayed behind, who were too exhausted to cross the brook Besor.

11 They found an Egyptian in the open country and brought him to David. And they gave him bread and he ate. They gave him water to drink, 12 and they gave him a piece of a cake of figs and two clusters of raisins. And when he had eaten, (AD)his spirit revived, for he had not eaten bread or drunk water for three days and three nights. 13 And David said to him, “To whom do you belong? And where are you from?” He said, “I am a young man of Egypt, servant to an Amalekite, and my master left me behind because I fell sick three days ago. 14 (AE)We had made a raid against the Negeb of (AF)the Cherethites and against that which belongs to Judah and against the Negeb of Caleb, and we burned Ziklag with fire.” 15 And David said to him, “Will you take me down to this band?” And he said, “Swear to me by God that you will not kill me or deliver me into the hands of my master, and I will take you down to this (AG)band.”

David Defeats the Amalekites

16 And when he had taken him down, behold, they were spread abroad over all the land, eating and drinking and dancing, because of all the great spoil they had taken from the land of the Philistines and from the land of Judah. 17 And David struck them down from twilight until the evening of the next day, and not a man of them escaped, except four hundred young men, who mounted camels and fled. 18 (AH)David recovered all that the Amalekites had taken, and David rescued his two wives. 19 Nothing was missing, whether small or great, sons or daughters, spoil or anything that had been taken. (AI)David brought back all. 20 David also captured all the flocks and herds, and the people drove the livestock before him,[c] and said, “This is David's spoil.”

21 Then David came to (AJ)the two hundred men who had been too exhausted to follow David, and who had been left (AK)at the brook Besor. And they went out to meet David and to meet the people who were with him. And when David came near to the people he greeted them. 22 Then all the wicked and worthless fellows among the men who had gone with David said, “Because they did not go with us, we will not give them any of the spoil that we have recovered, except that each man may lead away his wife and children, and depart.” 23 But David said, “You shall not do so, my brothers, with what the Lord has given us. He has preserved us and given into our hand the band that came against us. 24 Who would listen to you in this matter? (AL)For as his share is who goes down into the battle, so shall his share be who stays by the baggage. They shall share alike.” 25 And he made it a statute and a rule for Israel from that day forward to this day.

26 When David came to Ziklag, he sent part of the spoil to his friends, the elders of Judah, saying, “Here is a present for you from the spoil of the enemies of the Lord.” 27 It was for those in (AM)Bethel, in Ramoth of the Negeb, in (AN)Jattir, 28 in (AO)Aroer, in Siphmoth, in (AP)Eshtemoa, 29 in Racal, in the cities of (AQ)the Jerahmeelites, in the cities of (AR)the Kenites, 30 in (AS)Hormah, in Bor-ashan, in Athach, 31 in (AT)Hebron, for all the places where David and his men had roamed.

The Death of Saul

31 (AU)Now the Philistines were fighting against Israel, and the men of Israel fled before the Philistines and fell slain (AV)on Mount Gilboa. And the Philistines overtook Saul and his sons, and the Philistines struck down (AW)Jonathan and (AX)Abinadab and Malchi-shua, the sons of Saul. (AY)The battle pressed hard against Saul, and the archers found him, and he was badly wounded by the archers. (AZ)Then Saul said to his armor-bearer, “Draw your sword, and thrust me through with it, lest these (BA)uncircumcised come and thrust me through, and mistreat me.” But his armor-bearer would not, (BB)for he feared greatly. Therefore Saul took his own sword (BC)and fell upon it. And when his armor-bearer saw that Saul was dead, he also fell upon his sword and died with him. Thus Saul died, and his three sons, and his armor-bearer, and all his men, on the same day together. And when the men of Israel who were on the other side of the valley and those beyond the Jordan saw that the men of Israel had fled and that Saul and his sons were dead, they abandoned their cities and fled. And the Philistines came and lived in them.

The next day, when the Philistines came to strip the slain, they found Saul and his three sons fallen on Mount Gilboa. So they cut off his head and stripped off his armor and sent messengers throughout the land of the Philistines, (BD)to carry the good news (BE)to the house of their idols and to the people. 10 (BF)They put his armor in the temple of (BG)Ashtaroth, and they fastened his body to the wall of (BH)Beth-shan. 11 (BI)But when the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead heard what the Philistines had done to Saul, 12 (BJ)all the valiant men arose and went all night and took the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons from the wall of Beth-shan, and they came to Jabesh (BK)and burned them there. 13 And they took their bones (BL)and buried them under (BM)the tamarisk tree in Jabesh and (BN)fasted seven days.

John 11:55-12:19

55 Now (A)the Passover of the Jews was at hand, and (B)many went up from the country to Jerusalem before the Passover (C)to purify themselves. 56 (D)They were looking for[a] Jesus and saying to one another as they stood in the temple, “What do you think? That he will not come to the feast at all?” 57 Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone knew where he was, he should let them know, so that they might arrest him.

Mary Anoints Jesus at Bethany

12 Six days before (E)the Passover, (F)Jesus therefore came to Bethany, (G)where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. So they gave a dinner for him there. (H)Martha served, and Lazarus was one of those reclining with him at table. (I)Mary therefore took a pound[b] of expensive ointment made from pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (he who was about to betray him), said, “Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii[c] and (J)given to the poor?” He said this, not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief, and (K)having charge of the moneybag he used to help himself to what was put into it. Jesus said, “Leave her alone, so that she may keep it[d] for the day of my burial. For the poor you always have with you, but you do not always have me.”

The Plot to Kill Lazarus

When the large crowd of the Jews learned that Jesus[e] was there, they came, not only on account of him but also to see Lazarus, (L)whom he had raised from the dead. 10 (M)So the chief priests made plans to put Lazarus to death as well, 11 because (N)on account of him many of the Jews were going away and believing in Jesus.

The Triumphal Entry

12 The next day (O)the large crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. 13 So they took branches of (P)palm trees and went out to meet him, crying out, (Q)“Hosanna! Blessed is (R)he who comes in the name of the Lord, even (S)the King of Israel!” 14 And Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, just as it is written,

15 (T)“Fear not, daughter of Zion;
behold, your king is coming,
sitting on a donkey's colt!”

16 (U)His disciples did not understand these things at first, but (V)when Jesus was glorified, then (W)they remembered that these things had been written about him and had been done to him. 17 (X)The crowd that had been with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to bear witness. 18 The reason why the crowd went to meet him (Y)was that they heard he had done this sign. 19 So the Pharisees said to one another, (Z)“You see that you are gaining nothing. Look, (AA)the world has gone after him.”

Psalm 118:1-18

His Steadfast Love Endures Forever

118 (A)Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;
for his steadfast love endures forever!

(B)Let Israel say,
“His steadfast love endures forever.”
(C)Let the house of Aaron say,
“His steadfast love endures forever.”
(D)Let those who fear the Lord say,
“His steadfast love endures forever.”

(E)Out of my distress I (F)called on the Lord;
the Lord answered me and set me (G)free.
(H)The Lord is on my side; (I)I will not fear.
What can man do to me?
(J)The Lord is on my side as my helper;
I shall (K)look in triumph on those who hate me.

(L)It is better to take refuge in the Lord
(M)than to trust in man.
It is better to take refuge in the Lord
(N)than to trust in princes.

10 (O)All nations surrounded me;
in the name of the Lord I cut them off!
11 They surrounded me, surrounded me on every side;
in the name of the Lord I cut them off!
12 (P)They surrounded me like bees;
they went out like (Q)a fire among thorns;
in the name of the Lord I cut them off!
13 I was (R)pushed hard,[a] so that I was falling,
but the Lord helped me.

14 The Lord is my strength and my song;
(S)he has become my salvation.
15 Glad songs of salvation
are in the tents of the righteous:
(T)“The right hand of the Lord (U)does valiantly,
16 the right hand of the Lord exalts,
the right hand of the Lord (V)does valiantly!”

17 (W)I shall not die, but I shall live,
and (X)recount the deeds of the Lord.
18 The Lord has (Y)disciplined me severely,
but he has not given me over to death.

Proverbs 15:24-26

24 The path of life leads upward (A)for the prudent,
that he may turn away from Sheol beneath.
25 The Lord tears down the house of (B)the proud
but (C)maintains (D)the widow's boundaries.
26 (E)The thoughts of the wicked are an abomination to the Lord,
but (F)gracious words are pure.

1 Samuel 26:1-28:25, John 11:1-54, Psalm 117:1-2, Proverbs 15:22-23

Today is the 20th day of May welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I’m Brian it’s great to be here with you today, great to take the next step forward in the Scriptures. So, let’s dive in. We’ve been working our way through first Samuel and we’ll actually be completing First Samuel in tomorrow’s reading and then moving on inro Second Samuel but let’s like not get ahead of ourselves. We’re reading from the English Standard Version this week. First Samuel 26, 27, and 28 today.

Commentary:

Okay. So, as we mentioned at the beginning today, we’re nearing the end of First Samuel. We will conclude first Samuel tomorrow and then move into second Samuel. Of course, these were all the same text at one point, but there’s kind of a marker there because once we move into Second Samuel, we’ll be focusing on…on David whereas we’ve been heavily focused in first Samuel on Israel’s first king, Saul. And we’ve seen how irrational…I mean we watched the whole reign right up until this point. We’ve seen the erratic behavior. We’ve seen him be irrational. We’ve seen him to be tremendously fearful of…of people’s opinions. We’ve seen his paranoia and the way that he feeds into the conspiracy theory that David is out to kill him and take over the kingdom. And we’ve also watched David on the run. We met him as just a shepherd boy, just a young good-looking kid go into the battlefield and then he gets thrust into the national spotlight after killing the giant Goliath. And Saul and David, their lives are intertwined from that point forward. I mean…just…Saul has brought out a lot of growing up in David. Like he had to grow pretty fast and had to truly actually learn how to become a warrior, not just a confident kid, like a actual warrior to be stealthy enough to…to run for his life and preserve his life and have places to…to defend himself etc. etc. We’ve watched all that happen in David’s life. So, he has been changed dramatically because Saul’s in his life and he has grown up because of it. And we’ve seen how David has an effect on Saul because although David is faithful and loyal and would not touch God’s anointed, Saul sees him as a threat that has to be eliminated. And even after David had spared Saul’s life a couple of times when he could have absolutely killed him, Saul just…he doesn’t relent. David finally realizes like, “eventually…eventually no matter how good I am…I mean…how…how long can I be 100%? Like because that one time I’m 99% right, he’s gonna kill me.” And, so, he defects to the Philistines and at least appears to be a Philistine to the Philistines. And, so, Israel and the Philistines are going to go into battle and David is told he and his men have to go as Philistines into battle against the Israelites. And he says, “I will do that.” And they begin the march. Meanwhile, Saul’s trying to get the word of the Lord on this forthcoming battle and God is not answering him and so we see Saul and going to a medium to conjure up the spirit of Samuel from the dead. And ironically that happens. Samuel is conjured of from the dead. The spirit of Samuel appears before Saul and they have a conversation. And it’s not the conversation Saul might have hoped for. It’s a conversation that tells Saul that he will be in the land of the dead within the next day. He will join Samuel in the land in the realm of the dead within the next day. And, so, that’s like the last thing Saul wants to hear. And, so, one more time he’s freaked out. And, so, as we leave the story today David and his men are marching with the Philistines as Philistines toward a battle with his own people with the Israelites against King Saul and his army and Saul has been informed that he’s gonna lose the battle and die in the battle and tomorrow we will see how this story plays out.

Prayer:

Father we thank You for Your word. We thank You for every life, every person that we’ve been able to meet in the Scriptures, every person who has gone before us as…as spiritual ancestors as it were. We watched their lives. Sometimes we don’t understand their customs. It’s thousands of years ago but when we look deeper at their lives, they’re human beings with the same motivations and the same desires that we have. And, so, we watch. Like we watch king Saul and his insecurities, and it brings so near our own insecurities and how much disruption to our lives they have caused. And, so, as we continue to meet people, as we continue to watch people, we invite Your Holy Spirit to use their lives as a mirror into our own lives. And we pray this in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hi, this is a Daily Audio Bible person that’s never called in before. Been listening for three years and I just hear all the wonderful prayers…prayers that have been answered and I ask for prayer for my family and my husband, that his heart would just be solely unto God, that we can connect together with our finances, that I fear telling him because he gets so angry but yet he has…likes to spend. And I’m trying to keep things together. It’s not that we can’t afford things, but I don’t want the debt because God has called us not to be in debt. And I ask for prayer of peace from the Holy Spirit. I cannot stop him doing these things alone and that is why I’m calling in for prayer. I will go with the name of Peace and Grace in My Heart and I appreciate everything Brian and his family does and just keep prayer and family. Amen. Thank You.

Hello DAB family this is Michael Rowing the Boat Ashore, and I just listened to the May 17th Daily Audio Bible and Brian’s commentary and the reading resonated with me so profoundly as I am 55 years old and three years blind. I truly believe that my blindness is a blessing because it brought me back from a life of destruction and brought me closer to God. And I can now see what I couldn’t see when I could see and that is an amazing thing to know. Anyway, I just wanted to say thank you to Brian and the Hardin family for this ministry. God, bless. I love you all. Michael Rowing the Boat Ashore. Hallelujah.

Hey this is Paper Clip, Annette Allison’s son. I just want to say that I’m thankful to God and to my mother and everybody who supported me. In my crazy journey of about 10 years ago I got caught in a drug case and didn’t exactly do what I was supposed to do and 10 years later here I am. My lawyer just called me and by the grace of God and the mercy of the court my case was dismissed. So, I am walking today a free man no longer living in fear thanks to God. Honestly, that’s the only thing I can say, is thanks to God. So, I’m happy to say that and I…I can’t wait to start my new journey in life. And there’s always hope for those who doesn’t…that don’t think that there’s any hope at all. So, there’s always a light at the end of the tunnel. So, just remember that. Thanks guys, thanks God, thanks everybody.

1 Samuel 26-28

David Spares Saul Again

26 (A)Then the Ziphites came to Saul at Gibeah, saying, “Is not David hiding himself on the hill of Hachilah, which is on the east of Jeshimon?” So Saul arose and went down to (B)the wilderness of Ziph with (C)three thousand chosen men of Israel to seek David in the wilderness of Ziph. And Saul encamped on the hill of Hachilah, which is beside the road on the east of Jeshimon. But David remained in the wilderness. When he saw that Saul came after him into the wilderness, David sent out spies and learned that Saul had indeed come. Then David rose and came to the place where Saul had encamped. And David saw the place where Saul lay, with (D)Abner the son of Ner, the commander of his army. Saul was lying within (E)the encampment, while the army was encamped around him.

Then David said to Ahimelech the Hittite, and to Joab's brother (F)Abishai the son of Zeruiah, (G)“Who will go down with me into the camp to Saul?” And Abishai said, “I will go down with you.” So David and Abishai went to the army by night. And there lay Saul sleeping within (H)the encampment, with his spear stuck in the ground (I)at his head, and Abner and the army lay around him. Then Abishai said to David, (J)“God has given your enemy into your hand this day. Now please let me pin him to the earth with one stroke of the spear, and I will not strike him twice.” But David said to Abishai, “Do not destroy him, for who can put out his hand (K)against the Lord's anointed and be guiltless?” 10 And David said, (L)“As the Lord lives, (M)the Lord will strike him, or (N)his day will come to die, (O)or he will go down into battle and perish. 11 (P)The Lord forbid that I should put out my hand against the Lord's anointed. But take now the spear that is (Q)at his head and the jar of water, and let us go.” 12 So David took the spear and the jar of water from Saul's head, and they went away. No man saw it or knew it, nor did any awake, for they were all asleep, because (R)a deep sleep from the Lord had fallen upon them.

13 Then David went over to the other side and stood far off on the top of the hill, with a great space between them. 14 And David called to the army, and to Abner the son of Ner, saying, “Will you not answer, Abner?” Then Abner answered, “Who are you who calls to the king?” 15 And David said to Abner, “Are you not a man? Who is like you in Israel? Why then have you not kept watch over your lord the king? For one of the people came in to destroy the king your lord. 16 This thing that you have done is not good. (S)As the Lord lives, you deserve to die, because you have not kept watch over your lord, the Lord's anointed. And now see where the king's spear is and the jar of water that was (T)at his head.”

17 Saul recognized David's voice and said, (U)“Is this your voice, my son David?” And David said, “It is my voice, my lord, O king.” 18 And he said, (V)“Why does my lord pursue after his servant? For what have I done? What evil is on my hands? 19 Now therefore let my lord the king hear the words of his servant. If it is the Lord who has stirred you up against me, may he accept an offering, but if it is men, may they be cursed before the Lord, (W)for they have driven me out this day that I should have no share in (X)the heritage of the Lord, saying, ‘Go, serve other gods.’ 20 Now therefore, let not my blood fall to the earth away from the presence of the Lord, for the king of Israel has come out to seek (Y)a single flea like one who hunts a partridge in the mountains.”

21 Then Saul said, (Z)“I have sinned. Return, my son David, for I will no more do you harm, because my life was precious in your eyes this day. Behold, I have acted foolishly, and have made a great mistake.” 22 And David answered and said, “Here is the spear, O king! Let one of the young men come over and take it. 23 (AA)The Lord rewards every man for his righteousness and his faithfulness, for the Lord gave you into my hand today, and I would not put out my hand against the Lord's anointed. 24 Behold, as your life was precious this day in my sight, so may my life be precious in the sight of the Lord, and may he deliver me out of all tribulation.” 25 Then Saul said to David, “Blessed be you, my son David! You will do many things and will (AB)succeed in them.” So David went his way, and Saul returned to his place.

David Flees to the Philistines

27 Then David said in his heart, “Now I shall perish one day by the hand of Saul. There is nothing better for me than that I should escape to the land of the Philistines. Then Saul will despair of seeking me any longer within the borders of Israel, and I shall escape out of his hand.” So David arose and went over, he and (AC)the six hundred men who were with him, (AD)to Achish the son of Maoch, king of Gath. And David lived with Achish at Gath, he and his men, every man with his household, and David with (AE)his two wives, Ahinoam of Jezreel, and Abigail of Carmel, Nabal's widow. And when it was told Saul that David had fled to Gath, he no longer sought him.

Then David said to Achish, “If (AF)I have found favor in your eyes, let a place be given me in one of the country towns, that I may dwell there. For why should your servant dwell in the royal city with you?” So that day Achish gave him (AG)Ziklag. Therefore Ziklag has belonged to the kings of Judah to this day. (AH)And the number of the days that David lived in the country of the Philistines was a year and four months.

Now David (AI)and his men went up and made raids against (AJ)the Geshurites, (AK)the Girzites, and (AL)the Amalekites, for these were the inhabitants of the land from of old, (AM)as far as Shur, to the land of Egypt. And David would strike the land and would leave neither man nor woman alive, but would take away the sheep, the oxen, the donkeys, the camels, and the garments, and come back to Achish. 10 When Achish asked, “Where have you (AN)made a raid today?” David would say, “Against the Negeb of Judah,” or, “Against the Negeb of (AO)the Jerahmeelites,” or, “Against the Negeb of (AP)the Kenites.” 11 And David would leave neither man nor woman alive to bring news to Gath, thinking, “lest they should tell about us and say, ‘So David has done.’” Such was his custom all the while he lived in the country of the Philistines. 12 And Achish trusted David, thinking, “He has made himself an utter stench to his people Israel; therefore he shall always be my servant.”

Saul and the Medium of En-dor

28 In those days (AQ)the Philistines gathered their forces for war, to fight against Israel. And Achish said to David, “Understand that you and your men are to go out with me in the army.” David said to Achish, “Very well, you shall know what your servant can do.” And Achish said to David, “Very well, I will make you my bodyguard for life.”

Now (AR)Samuel had died, and all Israel had mourned for him and buried him (AS)in Ramah, his own city. And Saul had put (AT)the mediums and the necromancers out of the land. The Philistines assembled and came and encamped (AU)at Shunem. And Saul gathered all Israel, and they encamped (AV)at Gilboa. When Saul saw the army of the Philistines, he was afraid, and his heart trembled greatly. And when Saul inquired of the Lord, (AW)the Lord did not answer him, either (AX)by dreams, or (AY)by Urim, or by prophets. Then Saul said to his servants, (AZ)“Seek out for me a woman who is a medium, that I may go to her and inquire of her.” And his servants said to him, “Behold, there is a medium at (BA)En-dor.”

So Saul (BB)disguised himself and put on other garments and went, he and two men with him. And they came to the woman by night. And he said, (BC)“Divine for me by a spirit and bring up for me whomever I shall name to you.” The woman said to him, “Surely you know what Saul has done, (BD)how he has cut off the mediums and the necromancers from the land. Why then are you laying a trap for my life to bring about my death?” 10 But Saul swore to her by the Lord, (BE)“As the Lord lives, no punishment shall come upon you for this thing.” 11 Then the woman said, “Whom shall I bring up for you?” He said, “Bring up Samuel for me.” 12 When the woman saw Samuel, she cried out with a loud voice. And the woman said to Saul, “Why have you deceived me? You are Saul.” 13 The king said to her, “Do not be afraid. What do you see?” And the woman said to Saul, “I see a god coming up out of the earth.” 14 He said to her, “What is his appearance?” And she said, “An old man is coming up, and he is wrapped (BF)in a robe.” And Saul knew that it was Samuel, and he bowed with his face to the ground and paid homage.

15 Then Samuel said to Saul, “Why have you disturbed me by bringing me up?” Saul answered, “I am in great distress, for the Philistines are warring against me, and (BG)God has turned away from me and (BH)answers me no more, either by prophets or by dreams. Therefore I have summoned you to tell me what I shall do.” 16 And Samuel said, “Why then do you ask me, since the Lord has turned from you and become your enemy? 17 The Lord has done to you as he spoke by me, for (BI)the Lord has torn the kingdom out of your hand and given it to your neighbor, David. 18 (BJ)Because you did not obey the voice of the Lord and did not carry out his fierce wrath against Amalek, therefore the Lord has done this thing to you this day. 19 Moreover, the Lord will give Israel also with you into the hand of the Philistines, and tomorrow you (BK)and your sons shall be with me. The Lord will give the army of Israel also into the hand of the Philistines.”

20 Then Saul fell at once full length on the ground, filled with fear because of the words of Samuel. And there was no strength in him, for he had eaten nothing all day and all night. 21 And the woman came to Saul, and when she saw that he was terrified, she said to him, “Behold, your servant has obeyed you. (BL)I have taken my life in my hand and have listened to what you have said to me. 22 Now therefore, you also obey your servant. Let me set a morsel of bread before you; and eat, that you may have strength when you go on your way.” 23 He refused and said, “I will not eat.” But his servants, together with the woman, urged him, and he listened to their words. So he arose from the earth and sat on the bed. 24 Now the woman had a fattened calf in the house, and she quickly killed it, and she took flour and kneaded it and baked unleavened bread of it, 25 and she put it before Saul and his servants, and they ate. Then they rose and went away that night.

John 11:1-54

The Death of Lazarus

11 Now a certain man was ill, Lazarus of Bethany, the village of (A)Mary and her sister Martha. (B)It was Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was ill. So the sisters sent to him, saying, “Lord, (C)he whom you love is ill.” But when Jesus heard it he said, (D)“This illness does not lead to death. It is for (E)the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.”

Now (F)Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. So, when he heard that Lazarus[a] was ill, (G)he stayed two days longer in the place where he was. Then after this he said to the disciples, (H)“Let us go to Judea again.” The disciples said to him, (I)“Rabbi, (J)the Jews were just now seeking to stone you, and are you going there again?” Jesus answered, (K)“Are there not twelve hours in the day? (L)If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world. 10 But (M)if anyone walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not (N)in him.” 11 After saying these things, he said to them, “Our friend Lazarus (O)has fallen asleep, but I go to awaken him.” 12 The disciples said to him, “Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover.” 13 Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that he meant taking rest in sleep. 14 Then Jesus told them plainly, “Lazarus has died, 15 and for your sake I am glad that I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.” 16 (P)So Thomas, called the Twin,[b] said to his fellow disciples, “Let us also go, (Q)that we may die with him.”

17 Now when Jesus came, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb (R)four days. 18 Bethany was near Jerusalem, about two miles[c] off, 19 and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary (S)to console them concerning their brother. 20 (T)So when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, but Mary remained seated in the house. 21 Martha said to (U)Jesus, “Lord, (V)if you had been here, my brother would not have died. 22 But even now I know that whatever you ask from God, (W)God will give you.” 23 Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.” 24 (X)Martha said to him, “I know that he will rise again in (Y)the resurrection on the last day.” 25 Jesus said to her, (Z)“I am the resurrection and (AA)the life.[d] Whoever believes in me, (AB)though he die, (AC)yet shall he live, 26 and everyone who lives and believes in me (AD)shall never die. Do you believe this?” 27 She said to him, “Yes, Lord; (AE)I believe that (AF)you are the Christ, the Son of God, (AG)who is coming into the world.”

Jesus Weeps

28 When she had said this, she went and called her sister Mary, saying in private, (AH)“The Teacher is here and is calling for you.” 29 And when she heard it, she rose quickly and went to him. 30 Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was still in the place where Martha had met him. 31 When the Jews (AI)who were with her in the house, consoling her, saw Mary rise quickly and go out, they followed her, supposing that she was going to the tomb to weep there. 32 Now when Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet, saying to him, (AJ)“Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.” 33 When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come with her also weeping, he (AK)was deeply moved[e] in his spirit and (AL)greatly troubled. 34 And he said, “Where have you laid him?” They said to him, “Lord, come and see.” 35 (AM)Jesus wept. 36 So the Jews said, “See (AN)how he loved him!” 37 But some of them said, “Could not he (AO)who opened the eyes of the blind man (AP)also have kept this man from dying?”

Jesus Raises Lazarus

38 Then Jesus, (AQ)deeply moved again, came to the tomb. It was (AR)a cave, and (AS)a stone lay against it. 39 Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, “Lord, by this time there will be an odor, for (AT)he has been dead four days.” 40 Jesus said to her, (AU)“Did I not tell you that if you believed you would see (AV)the glory of God?” 41 So they took away the stone. And Jesus (AW)lifted up his eyes and said, “Father, I thank you that you have heard me. 42 (AX)I knew that you always hear me, but I said this (AY)on account of the people standing around, (AZ)that they may believe that you sent me.” 43 When he had said these things, he cried out with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out.” 44 (BA)The man who had died came out, (BB)his hands and feet bound with linen strips, and (BC)his face wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.”

The Plot to Kill Jesus

45 (BD)Many of the Jews therefore, (BE)who had come with Mary and (BF)had seen what he did, believed in him, 46 but some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done. 47 So the chief priests and the Pharisees (BG)gathered (BH)the council and said, (BI)“What are we to do? For this man performs many signs. 48 If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and (BJ)the Romans will come and take away both our (BK)place and our nation.” 49 But one of them, (BL)Caiaphas, (BM)who was high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all. 50 Nor do you understand that (BN)it is better for you that one man should die for the people, not that the whole nation should perish.” 51 He did not say this of his own accord, but (BO)being high priest that year (BP)he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation, 52 and (BQ)not for the nation only, but also (BR)to gather into one the children of God who are scattered abroad. 53 So from that day on they (BS)made plans to put him to death.

54 Jesus therefore (BT)no longer walked openly among the Jews, but went from there to the region near the wilderness, to a town called Ephraim, and there he stayed with the disciples.

1 Samuel 24:1-25:44, John 10:22-42, Psalm 116:1-19, Proverbs 15:20-21

Today is the 19th day of May welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I’m Brian it is a joy and an honor, like every day of life that we can come to this oasis, this little place around the Global Campfire and let the Scriptures speak to us no matter what else is going on in our lives. And that is a joy. So, let’s dive in. No matter what else is going on in life, probably we’re not facing the kinds of things that this guy, this young man David, who’s become a national celebrity for killing a giant, and now the king wants him dead and is hunting him down like a fugitive, relentlessly, he probably has it a little more difficult today than we do. So, let’s dive in. 1 Samuel chapters 24 and 25 today.

Commentary:

Ok, as we continue our journey through 1st Samuel, we had like one sentence informing us that Samuel has died and, you know, we’ll get a little more into this as this story goes forward but, yeah, that’s the announcement. Samuel the prophet, the last judge of Israel, the person that brought the tribes to the place of the monarchy, to the place of their first king has died. Now David has no…no one to really run to and counsel with and he’s just on the run from Saul and we’ve been watching Saul and we see his insecurities and we see that his paranoia and insecurity has gotten the best of him and he’s…he’s acting irrationally and erratically. He wants David dead because he sees David as a threat, a threat to his kingdom, but also a threat to his family because if David ascends to the throne and he’s still alive or…or his family’s still alive then it would not be uncommon for that new King to…to completely wipe out every known relative in the house of the former king, in this case the house of Saul, to destroy from the earth or the memory of anybody who was related to Saul and wipe it from the earth, which is a terrible dishonor. And, so, Saul has all this going on in his mind. He’s listening to the voices of those who are around him who are…who are feeding into this conspiracy that David wants to harm the king. Can we just pause there and say that what Saul was thinking about David, at least from the narrative in first Samuel, he’s completely incorrect about his assumptions about David. He’s listening to things that are being told to him about David or David’s words or character are being interpreted back to Saul in a way that is incorrect and Saul’s believing it. So, it’s Saul’s conviction that, as erratic as it might be or as irrational as might be, David needs to be killed as quickly as possible. And then we have this scene where the king is searching for David in the caves of Engedi. And Engedi is a very non-place. It’s an oasis in the wilderness running freshwater down into the…the lowest point on earth, the Dead Sea. And there are caves all around that entire area. Qumran is around that area not too far. There all kinds of caves in their Qumran is where the Dead Sea Scrolls were found in caves. So, David’s hiding out in all these caves and he’s near Engedi the oasis where there’s fresh water when Saul goes into relieve himself to go to the bathroom. And, yeah, he needs a little privacy. So, he’s with his army and if, you know, if he just needed to pee, like he probably would have just done so, but you need a little privacy. So, this is how David could sneak up and cut off the edge of his robe. Saul’s busy taking care of business and so David can get the edge of his robe. As it turns out David comes out of the cave and Saul is confronted with the truth. So, this whole formulation, this whole belief that Saul has that David is his enemy and that is being reinforced by other voices in his life, now Saul has to face the truth because he’s facing David who’s holding the edge of his kingly rope. And David feels terrible about just cutting off the edge of his robe. But he’s demonstrating to the king, “what you think about me is not true. Can you not see the works that I’m doing? Can you not see that I could’ve killed you right now? Can you not see that I would not lay my hand on the Lord’s anointed? Can you not see that I’ve been running from you, not fighting you? Look at what I am doing and stop listening to what other people are saying or interpreting about me. Look at what I am doing.” And Saul is confronted with the truth and repents in this story. Of course, it’s the end, but in this moment, Saul is confronted with the truth and he repents.

When we flip the page, and we move ourselves into the gospel of John we see Jesus and a confrontation. They’re just…I mean the Jews are gathering around Jesus saying, “tell us the truth. Like, tell us plainly. Are s you the Messiah.” And then He basically told them, “I have told you plainly. You don’t believe me. So, therefore the things that I’m doing should bear witness and answer your questions since you don’t believe me.” Then all the sudden we’ve got a very, very similar story in the New Testament to the one that we were looking at with David and Saul. The religious leaders, the devout Jewish people have an interpretation of what they are expecting. They have theology and dogma written around it. And Jesus almost fits the bill. He’s almost the right recipe, but He won’t play the game. He keeps disrupting things. And, so, they have their way of what…of believing what they expect and what has been interpreted for them and they are trying to overlay what they are expecting and what has been interpreted for them onto Jesus. And then Jesus tells them plainly, “I and the Father are one.” And they immediately pick up stones to…to stone Him for blasphemy for comparing Himself to God, for elevating Himself to the level of God. Jesus actually uses the Scriptures and speaks from the Psalms, a Psalm of Asaph. He uses the Scriptures to defend what He has said. So, that’s Psalm 82, which reads, “the gods know nothing. They understand nothing. They walk about in darkness. All the foundations of the earth are shaken. I said you are God’s. You are all sons of the most-high but you will die like mere mortals. You will fall like every other ruler.” That’s the context, that’s the Scripture Jesus is quoting back to them in response to their accusation of blasphemy and then He says, “if I am not doing the works of My Father then do not believe Me but if I do them, even though you do not believe Me, believe the works, that you may know and understand that the Father is in Me and I am in the Father.” So, in so many ways Jesus is saying, “stop listening to every voice that you are hearing about me and see what I am actually doing and let these works speak louder than what you are hearing.” The hard part about this is that we…we can look into these stories and see clarity until we have to put ourselves in different positions, like the nonbelieving Jewish devout in this particular story. Because we put a premium on trying to get people to believe the way that we believe and trying to continually adjust and…and tweak out and refine what we believe so that we’re believing the right thing. And a lot of this comes from our…our understanding that we are saved by faith, it is by grace alone. Like, there’s nothing we could do to earn it so why try to earn it. And yet the Bible is explicit in a number of cases where faith without works is dead, where if the action of your life is not congruent with the sayings of your life, then it’s a mismatch and you’re not being true. And then there’s this assumption that God is…like that Jesus isn’t really still upon this earth doing things…significant…like we hear rumors of it, we know that spiritually He’s doing these things, but it’s not the same so we’re not talking apples for apples. But we are though. We are talking apples for apples because the Spirit of the risen Christ indwells us. Like we’re the ones that are supposed to be out there doing the things that Jesus did, that like that’s how Jesus is supposed to continue His work in this world is that we open our eyes to see and stop just listening to what we’re told and actually look, open our eyes to see and look and find where God is at work in this world. And we will find Him at work in this world wherever the brokenhearted are being comforted and wherever the…those in bondage are being set free. It’s like we have this deep, deep longing for shalom, for things to be right, for things to be the way they were supposed to be, for things to…to be refined and perfected and we think that that is an eventuality, that is an eventuality when Christ is on the throne on planet Earth. Christ is on planet Earth in you, in me, in us. We have to open our eyes to see that the shalom we keep waiting for Him to someday eventually bring when He comes on a white horse and splits the eastern sky. He’s here in us. We’re supposed to be collaborating and bringing shalom. We can barely maintain that for an hour with in ourselves, much less spreading it to the world. Again, one of the primary…one…one gauge that is so amazing is to just go back and review the last few months of the things we’ve been posting on social media. That will tell us what we’re putting out into the world. So often what was said…what those posts are filled with is our defense of God, our defense of what we’ve been told, our defense of what we think we know, our statements of what God will and will not do and with whom He will do it and with whom He will not do it. And we could find ourselves in either one of these kinds of situations, whether from first Samuel or from John today where we have these assumptions, we believe this certain thing and what we’re seeing, although it seems like God is at work it doesn’t fit our mold and so we can reject it on some sort of technicality. If we’re gonna do that, if we’re gonna keep doing that, friends we’re never going to get anywhere. I keep thinking to myself, at least once a week, at least once a week. This is my 16th year that I’ve been reading the Bible every single day of my life. I’ve been studying this book diligently. I know it’s in this book. I know that every time I move through a revolution around the sun and a whole journey through this book I’m changed again and things that I thought last time are modified or corrected or refined and I know more because I’ve lived another year and I’ve seen more. And there are times that I think does this…does this matter, like what moves the needle here? Like, what actually makes significant profound change among the body of Christ to the point that we wake up to understand that it is Christ within that is going to matter and that we have to die to ourselves. And all of these things that we keep fighting about and fighting each other over and all we’re really doing is giving voice to our fears and how we want it and how God better want it because that’s how we want it. But the truth of the gospel….and we’re reading John and I’m like trying to be as serious as I can here because this is the last gospel and then we’re gonna move into the church era. God came in the flesh and disrupted what everybody thought, what everybody was expecting. That’s what we read when we read the Gospels. We see people’s hearts come alive in a way that has never happened before and then we see people that are confused by it and go like, “no. That does not overlay with what I think. God certainly wouldn’t do that with him. We know he is a sinner. We know that God wouldn’t heal on the Sabbath day. So, this is not of God.” That’s what they’re saying and God’s standing in front of them showing them with signs and wonders and words that awaken deep things that have been slumbering for so long. And still they killed Him. And they killed Him over their interpretation of the Scriptures. God was present in the person of Jesus modeling what He meant, revealing a kingdom and demonstrating what humanities supposed to look like. And still they missed it. And still we’re missing it. It really isn’t about our understanding. It is totally about our surrender. And I guarantee that when we begin to walk the pathway of faith it is going to be the adventure of a lifetime and so much of what we think we know will fall away as we actually walk with God. So, some things for us to think about.

Prayer:

Holy Spirit it is always…it is after we read the Scriptures and talk about anything we invite You because we need You to lead us into all truth. You are the truth. Jesus, You are the way, the truth, and the life. Of course, I’m not telling You something You don’t already know. I’m just repeating what You told us. You are the way the truth and the life. And, so, there is no one else to follow that’s gonna lead us there besides You. We can look at any hero, any example, any other human being on this planet, anybody that we throw up and…and…and say, “yeah there’s a model of…of somebody doing it right “and they’re still…like…they’re…we are all broken. You are whole. There is no wholeness without You. Shalom is not possible without You. And yet we have spent all of these thousands and thousands and thousands of years with all of our knowledge of good and evil trying to re-create an approximation of shalom all by ourselves on this world fighting out our political agendas, fighting each other’s nations, taking over, moving things around. We keep trying to re-create this sort of utopia, some kind of shalom without You. It’ll never happen and we’re guilty. As Your people we’re guilty. Thankfully, we can see examples from thousands and thousands of years ago in the Scriptures and know we’re not the only ones. But at some point, things have to change and may that change begin in us in our lifetimes. Come Holy Spirit we pray. Lead us into all truth, we ask in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hi, my name is Noah and I started listening to the Daily Audio Bible maybe a few months ago and it’s just been really great and I’m extremely grateful to Brian and all the…the whole team that helps this come out every day, I’m sure it’s a lot of work. But anyway, I am here to…to share a prayer request that I don’t hear on here a lot. But the Holy Spirits kind of put it on my heart to reach out to you guys because I do need…I need prayer for strength and…and perseverance. God…God saved my life from a…a drug abuse problem and it was really ruining my life and…and I’m now almost 9 months sober, praise God for that. But I’d like to prayer for…I’d like to request prayer for a struggle that has been ongoing with sexually purity in the form of pornography. And I know that’s really taboo and…and people don’t like to talk about it a lot but it’s something that I and I know that other men also struggle with, but I know that I’ve heard some crazy miracles that have happened as a result of this community and I know God delivered me from drugs and I know that God can deliver me from this too. So, thank you guys, that’s all I got.

Good morning DAB family this is George calling from Michigan. I’m reaching out because I got a friend who has a 19-month-old niece her name is Kia and Kia has been battling cancer her…her entire life, her short life. She recently went through surgery back in January. Things seemed to be on the right road to recovery and now things have gone and gotten really dire. I just…I know this community is filled with love and hope and faith and just to ask you all to…to please lift Kia up in prayer. Just ask that God wrap His loving arms around her and just if it be His will that He heal her and bring her to complete and total healing. And also ask that God wrap His arms around the family and give them strength and courage just to know that…that He’s there with them through all of this. Thank you DAB family I appreciate it. God be with you all. Amen.

Hi DAB family this is Mom Tri’s from Texas. I am a first-time caller and have been listening for…this is my second year now. Love this community, love everything, it’s so encouraging. I…I’m calling for a prayer request that’s a little bit silly because I’m perfectly healthy and my kids and my family…everything is going great, but I could use some prayers of encouragement and strength as I’m a professional triathlete as of this year anyway. I turned professional this year and I have my first big race of the year coming up on Sunday, May 23rd. So, I’m a little nervous but I race for the glory of God and have the cross on my jersey. So, no matter if I come in first or last everyone knows that I race for God’s glory. I truly feel like this is His calling on my life and how I can reach others through this sport. So, if you would just give me some prayers of strength and perseverance when it gets tough, it’s a full Iron Man so it’s a long day, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.

Good morning DAB family this is Steadfast Stacy in Arizona calling on May 17th to pray for Jonathan and his pregnant wife. Lord in heaven thank you for Jonathan’s courage to call in and share with us his prayer request for his wife whose 7 months pregnant and has COVID pneumonia. Thank you that he knows you and that you work out…that you work out of time and space and that he’s asked us to pray for her healing for their situation with a one-year-old at home and a baby on the way. And Lord, I just remember those days when I was pregnant with our second and we didn’t have the COVID complication at all and it was overwhelming to me and I just pray that You would be with his wife to show her Your presence so strongly that she’s not overwhelmed and that You would continue to give Jonathan the perspective that You have these things under control and that Your presence would be strong and…and practical to them. Lord, that You would bring people into their lives, remember…remind them of scripture through Your Holy Spirit, that everywhere they turn that they would see You and that they would be comforted in You. I pray these things in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Hi everyone, this is Sherrie I’m in Canada and I’ve been part of DAB for…since January and it’s been wonderful. I’m just calling asking for prayer. I have a lot of stuff going on right now but what I’m mostly asking for is I’ve had long-standing issues with my left eye. First diagnosed 45 years ago. I had a corneal transplant last July and it took well but I’ve also had glaucoma in that eye and just two weeks ago my ophthalmologist told me that the medication wasn’t controlling it anymore and I had basically exhausted my options because of an allergic reaction to other medications. She did put me on an oral medication, but the reaction was so bad in my stomach that I kind of haven’t eaten…eaten much for the last three weeks, so, I’ve had to go off of that. She’s referred me to a glaucoma surgeon, not sure if she will do anything for me because of the corneal graft, risk to it. So, I’m asking for prayer…I’m asking for prayer for ultimate healing. I believe in God’s healing. I’ve received His healing in the past. I have seen people be instantly healed when I pray for them, but quite honestly guys I’m…I’m kind of afraid. I’m afraid of losing my eyesight in that eye and my eyesight isn’t great in the other one. So, I’m just asking for prayer mostly for healing, but that also medical options would be open for me. And bless you all. Thank you so much, take care.

1 Samuel 24-25

David Spares Saul's Life

24 [a] (A)When Saul returned from following the Philistines, he was told, “Behold, David is in the wilderness of Engedi.” Then Saul took (B)three thousand chosen men out of all Israel and went to seek David and his men in front of the Wildgoats' Rocks. And he came to the sheepfolds by the way, where there was a cave, and Saul went in (C)to relieve himself.[b] Now David and his men were sitting in the innermost parts (D)of the cave. And the men of David said to him, (E)“Here is the day of which the Lord said to you, ‘Behold, I will give your enemy into your hand, and you shall do to him as it shall seem good to you.’” Then David arose and stealthily cut off a corner of Saul's robe. And afterward (F)David's heart struck him, because he had cut off a corner of Saul's robe. He said to his men, (G)“The Lord forbid that I should do this thing to my lord, the Lord's anointed, to put out my hand against him, seeing he is (H)the Lord's anointed.” So David persuaded his men with these words (I)and did not permit them to attack Saul. And Saul rose up and left the cave and went on his way.

Afterward David also arose and went out of the cave, and called after Saul, “My lord the king!” And when Saul looked behind him, David bowed with his face to the earth and paid homage. And David said to Saul, “Why do you listen to the words of men who say, ‘Behold, David seeks your harm’? 10 Behold, this day your eyes have seen how the Lord gave you today into my hand in the cave. (J)And some told me to kill you, but I spared you.[c] I said, ‘I will not put out my hand against my lord, (K)for he is the Lord's anointed.’ 11 See, my father, see the corner of your robe in my hand. For by the fact that I cut off the corner of your robe and did not kill you, you may know and see that (L)there is no wrong or treason in my hands. I have not sinned against you, though (M)you hunt my life to take it. 12 (N)May the Lord judge between me and you, may the Lord avenge me against you, but my hand shall not be against you. 13 As the proverb of the ancients says, ‘Out of the wicked comes wickedness.’ But my hand shall not be against you. 14 After whom has the king of Israel come out? After whom do you pursue? (O)After a dead dog! (P)After a flea! 15 (Q)May the Lord therefore be judge and give sentence between me and you, and see to it and (R)plead my cause and deliver me from your hand.”

16 As soon as David had finished speaking these words to Saul, Saul said, (S)“Is this your voice, my son David?” And Saul lifted up his voice and wept. 17 He said to David, “You are more righteous than I, (T)for you have repaid me good, whereas I have repaid you evil. 18 And you have declared this day how you have dealt well with me, in that you did not kill me when the Lord put me into your hands. 19 For if a man finds his enemy, will he let him go away safe? So may the Lord reward you with good for what you have done to me this day. 20 And now, behold, (U)I know that you shall surely be king, and that the kingdom of Israel shall be established in your hand. 21 (V)Swear to me therefore by the Lord that you will not cut off my offspring after me, and (W)that you will not destroy my name out of my father's house.” 22 And David swore this to Saul. Then Saul went home, but David and his men went up (X)to the stronghold.

The Death of Samuel

25 (Y)Now Samuel died. And all Israel assembled (Z)and mourned for him, and they buried him (AA)in his house at (AB)Ramah.

David and Abigail

Then David rose and went down to (AC)the wilderness of Paran. And there was a man in (AD)Maon whose business was in (AE)Carmel. The man was very rich; he had three thousand sheep and a thousand goats. (AF)He was shearing his sheep in Carmel. Now the name of the man was Nabal, and the name of his wife Abigail. The woman was discerning and beautiful, but the man was harsh and badly behaved; (AG)he was a Calebite. David heard in the wilderness that Nabal (AH)was shearing his sheep. So David sent ten young men. And David said to the young men, “Go up to Carmel, and go to Nabal and greet him in my name. And thus you shall greet him: (AI)‘Peace be to you, and peace be to your house, and peace be to all that you have. I hear that you have shearers. Now your shepherds have been with us, and we did them no harm, (AJ)and they missed nothing all the time they were in Carmel. Ask your young men, and they will tell you. Therefore let my young men find favor in your eyes, for we come (AK)on a feast day. Please give whatever you have at hand to your servants and to your son David.’”

When David's young men came, they said all this to Nabal in the name of David, and then they waited. 10 And Nabal answered David's servants, (AL)“Who is David? Who is the son of Jesse? (AM)There are many servants these days who are breaking away from their masters. 11 Shall I take (AN)my bread and my water and my meat that I have killed for my shearers and give it to (AO)men who come from I do not know where?” 12 So David's young men turned away and came back and told him all this. 13 And David said to his men, “Every man strap on his sword!” And every man of them strapped on his sword. David also strapped on his sword. And (AP)about four hundred men went up after David, (AQ)while two hundred (AR)remained with the baggage.

14 But one of the young men told Abigail, Nabal's wife, “Behold, David sent messengers out of the wilderness to greet our master, and he railed at them. 15 Yet the men were very good to us, and we suffered no harm, (AS)and we did not miss anything when we were in the fields, as long as we went with them. 16 They were (AT)a wall to us both by night and by day, all the while we were with them keeping the sheep. 17 Now therefore know this and consider what you should do, (AU)for harm is determined against our master and against all his house, and he is such (AV)a worthless man that one cannot speak to him.”

18 Then Abigail made haste and took two hundred loaves and two skins of wine and five sheep already prepared and five seahs[d] of parched grain and a hundred clusters of raisins and two hundred cakes of figs, and laid them on donkeys. 19 And she said to her young men, “Go on before me; behold, I come after you.” But she did not tell her husband Nabal. 20 And as she rode on the donkey and came down under cover of the mountain, behold, David and his men came down toward her, and she met them. 21 Now David had said, “Surely in vain have I guarded all that this fellow has in the wilderness, (AW)so that nothing was missed of all that belonged to him, and he has (AX)returned me evil for good. 22 (AY)God do so to the enemies of David[e] and more also, if by morning I leave so much as one male of all who belong to him.”

23 When Abigail saw David, she hurried (AZ)and got down from the donkey (BA)and fell before David on her face and bowed to the ground. 24 She fell at his feet and said, (BB)“On me alone, my lord, be the guilt. Please let your servant speak in your ears, and hear the words of your servant. 25 Let not my lord regard (BC)this worthless fellow, Nabal, for as his name is, so is he. Nabal[f] is his name, and folly is with him. But I your servant did not see the young men of my lord, whom you sent. 26 Now then, my lord, (BD)as the Lord lives, and as your soul lives, because (BE)the Lord has restrained you from bloodguilt and from (BF)saving with your own hand, now then (BG)let your enemies and those who seek to do evil to my lord be as Nabal. 27 And now let this (BH)present that your servant has brought to my lord be given to the young men who follow my lord. 28 Please forgive the trespass of your servant. For the Lord will certainly make my lord (BI)a sure house, because my lord (BJ)is fighting the battles of the Lord, and evil shall not be found in you so long as you live. 29 If men rise up to pursue you and to seek your life, the life of my lord shall be bound in the bundle of the living in the care of the Lord your God. And the lives of your enemies (BK)he shall sling out as from the hollow of a sling. 30 And when the Lord has done to my lord according to all the good that he has spoken concerning you and has appointed you prince[g] over Israel, 31 my lord shall have no cause of grief or pangs of conscience for having shed blood without cause or for my lord (BL)working salvation himself. And when the Lord has dealt well with my lord, then remember your servant.”

32 And David said to Abigail, (BM)“Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, who sent you this day to meet me! 33 Blessed be your discretion, and blessed be you, (BN)who have kept me this day from bloodguilt (BO)and from working salvation with my own hand! 34 For as surely (BP)as the Lord, the God of Israel, lives, (BQ)who has restrained me from hurting you, unless you had hurried and come to meet me, truly by morning there had not been left to Nabal so much as one male.” 35 Then David received from her hand what she had brought him. And he said to her, (BR)“Go up in peace to your house. See, I have obeyed your voice, and I have granted your petition.”

36 And Abigail came to Nabal, and behold, (BS)he was holding a feast in his house, like the feast of a king. And Nabal's heart (BT)was merry within him, for he was very drunk. So she told him nothing (BU)at all until the morning light. 37 In the morning, when the wine had gone out of Nabal, his wife told him these things, and his heart died within him, and he became as a stone. 38 And about ten days later (BV)the Lord struck Nabal, and he died.

39 When David heard that Nabal was dead, he said, (BW)“Blessed be the Lord who has (BX)avenged the insult I received at the hand of Nabal, (BY)and has kept back his servant from wrongdoing. (BZ)The Lord has returned the evil of Nabal on his own head.” Then David sent and (CA)spoke to Abigail, to take her as his wife. 40 When the servants of David came to Abigail at Carmel, they said to her, “David has sent us to you to take you to him as his wife.” 41 And she rose (CB)and bowed with her face to the ground and said, “Behold, your handmaid is a servant to wash the feet of the servants of my lord.” 42 And Abigail hurried and rose and mounted a donkey, and her five young women attended her. She followed the messengers of David and became his wife.

43 David also took Ahinoam of (CC)Jezreel, (CD)and both of them became his wives. 44 Saul had given Michal his daughter, David's wife, to Palti the son of Laish, who was of Gallim.

John 10:22-42

I and the Father Are One

22 At that time the Feast of Dedication took place at Jerusalem. It was winter, 23 and Jesus was walking in the temple, (A)in the colonnade of Solomon. 24 So the Jews gathered around him and said to him, “How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are (B)the Christ, (C)tell us plainly.” 25 Jesus answered them, “I told you, and you do not believe. (D)The works that I do (E)in my Father's name bear witness about me, 26 but (F)you do not believe because you are not among my sheep. 27 (G)My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. 28 (H)I give them eternal life, and (I)they will never perish, and (J)no one will snatch them out of my hand. 29 My Father, (K)who has given them to me,[a] (L)is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of (M)the Father's hand. 30 (N)I and the Father are one.”

31 (O)The Jews picked up stones again to stone him. 32 Jesus answered them, “I have shown you many good works from the Father; for which of them are you going to stone me?” 33 The Jews answered him, “It is not for a good work that we are going to stone you but (P)for blasphemy, because you, being a man, (Q)make yourself God.” 34 Jesus answered them, “Is it not written in (R)your Law, (S)‘I said, you are gods’? 35 If he called them gods to whom the word of God came—and Scripture cannot be (T)broken— 36 do you say of him whom (U)the Father consecrated and (V)sent into the world, ‘You are blaspheming,’ because (W)I said, ‘I am the Son of God’? 37 (X)If I am not doing the works of my Father, then do not believe me; 38 but if I do them, (Y)even though you do not believe me, believe the works, that you may know and understand that (Z)the Father is in me and I am in the Father.” 39 (AA)Again they sought to arrest him, but he escaped from their hands.

40 He went away again across the Jordan to the place (AB)where John had been baptizing at first, and there he remained. 41 And many came to him. And they said, “John did no sign, but (AC)everything that John said about this man was true.” 42 And (AD)many believed in him there.

Psalm 116

I Love the Lord

116 I (A)love the Lord, because he has (B)heard
my voice and my pleas for mercy.
Because he (C)inclined his ear to me,
therefore I will call on him as long as I live.
(D)The snares of death encompassed me;
the pangs of Sheol laid hold on me;
I suffered distress and anguish.
Then (E)I called on the name of the Lord:
“O Lord, I pray, deliver my soul!”

(F)Gracious is the Lord, and (G)righteous;
our God is (H)merciful.
The Lord preserves (I)the simple;
when (J)I was brought low, he saved me.
Return, O my soul, to your (K)rest;
for the Lord has (L)dealt bountifully with you.

For (M)you have delivered my soul from death,
my eyes from tears,
my feet from stumbling;
I will walk before the Lord
(N)in the land of the living.

10 (O)I believed, (P)even when[a] I spoke:
“I am greatly afflicted”;
11 (Q)I said in my alarm,
(R)“All mankind are liars.”

12 What shall I (S)render to the Lord
for all his benefits to me?
13 I will lift up (T)the cup of salvation
and (U)call on the name of the Lord,
14 I will (V)pay my vows to the Lord
in the presence of all his people.

15 (W)Precious in the sight of the Lord
is the death of his (X)saints.
16 O Lord, I am your (Y)servant;
I am your servant, (Z)the son of your maidservant.
You have (AA)loosed my bonds.
17 I will (AB)offer to you the sacrifice of thanksgiving
and (AC)call on the name of the Lord.
18 I will (AD)pay my vows to the Lord
in the presence of all his people,
19 in (AE)the courts of the house of the Lord,
in your midst, O Jerusalem.
(AF)Praise the Lord!

20 (A)A wise son makes a glad father,

Today is the 18th day of May welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I am Brian it is always a privilege, it’s always an honor for us to get together like this and have the accessibility to the Scriptures like we do and read them fresh and listen to what God is saying through the…the Bible. It is a joy every day to take the next step forward together. And, so, let’s do that. We’re reading from the English Standard Version this week. We’re still working our way through first book of Samuel. We’re pretty clear now in how David and Saul’s lives our intertwined. King Saul wants David to be dead and David is running for his life and trying to find a way to survive. And, so, let’s pick up the story. 1 Samuel, chapters 22 and 23 today.

Commentary:

Okay. So, we passed by a very famous portion of Scripture in the gospel of John today. And, so, we’ll talk about it and its context but let’s start by just zooming in on a couple of key words here, “steal, kill, destroy.” So, if you are being said stolen from than something that belongs to you in your possession has been taken by someone who has no right. Kill, we can pretty much understand. Although for something to be killed doesn’t necessarily mean you’re dead. Things can die within us - dreams, hopes, desires. And then destroy is to render something that was perfectly usable, completely broken and worthless. Actually, if you want to get technical here, to destroy something is and its existence. So, like if…if your house burns down may have insurance and everything like that to rebuild another one. But the one you did live in was destroyed, its existence as it was, has ended. Steal, kill, destroy. If we look at our lives just trying to live, right, just trying to make it through another week, just trying to do our very, very best we can see that these themes are around us. Sometimes it feels very much like we’re being stolen from and its nothing we can put our fingers on. It’s not physical, it’s “something is being taken.” Sometimes it feels like we can be experiencing theft, stealing, killing, and destroying like this…this is…this is happening. This is happening to me and I don’t know how to stop it. Jesus said, “the thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” In other words, the opposite of what the thief’s ambitions are. So, doesn’t that essentially describe life among humanity. That one verse, very famous, John 10:10, very famous verse, but that really encapsulates just about everything doesn’t it? And, so, how is it that we find this concise statement from the lips of Jesus? What’s He talking about? Because John 10:10, this is a quotable verse. This gets said every week. This gets that all of the time, but it’s part of a conversation just like John 3:16 is a part of a conversation when Jesus says, “for God so loved the world.” He’s in the middle of a conversation with a man named Nicodemus under the cover of night. So, this famous verse, John 10:10, “the thief comes only to steal, kill, and destroy” is part of a…of a conversation that Jesus is having and He’s discussing shepherding. He…He’s using the analogy of…of shepherding, that a flock of sheep they…they may go in and stay in a pen with many other flocks of sheep. It was a custom of the shepherds to keep the sheep together and guard them all in one place during the night, so that a predator or thief couldn’t come and take them. And then when morning comes and it’s time to go out to…out to pasture then each shepherd comes and calls its flock, and the sheep follow their shepherd because they know His voice. So, if you’re a shepherd and you got 10 sheep and your sheep are in a pen with 100 sheep and they’re all bleeding and they’re all moving around but you come, and you call your 10 sheep that you spend your life with, that you love them and you know them by name and you would lay her life down to protect them and you call them, they hear you, they trust you, they know you. Out of the many they come running to their shepherd so that they can go out to pasture. And Jesus in this discussion is basically saying that’s the way of it. Anybody who doesn’t go in the sheep gate and call his sheep how isn’t the shepherd. The one trying to get over the wall into the pen isn’t the shepherd. Anyone who’s not just going in the front door, who’s trying to get in some other way isn’t the shepherd. They’re, a thief and a robber according to Jesus, but the one who just walks into the front door and calls their flock, and the sheep hear their shepherd’s voice, and they follow the shepherd to pasture, that’s the true shepherd. Speaking of those sheep and quoting Jesus, “a stranger they will not follow. They will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers.” So, this gives us some context to what Jesus is talking about. And, so, now putting our famous verse in context, Jesus said, “I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly. I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep. I am the good shepherd. I know My own and My own know Me just as the Father knows Me and I know the Father. And I lay down My life for the sheep.” Okay. So, it’s not too much of a stretch for us to understand the metaphor here, that we are the sheep, and He is the good shepherd. But what we should probably understand is that if we are His sheep, we know His voice, which means that we can hear His voice, which means that He’s using His voice, which means that if it’s not His voice and it’s somebody else’s voice saying that He’s the shepherd we know better because we know the voice of our shepherd and we shy away from that interloper like sheep do. I mean my neighbor has sheep and a flock and, you know, they walk around and they…they bleat and do sheep things and if I walk over by the fence, and they are very observant creatures, if I walk over toward them, they’re going to stop what they’re doing and pay very close attention to what I’m doing. And if I continue and I say, “hi guys. Good morning beautiful sheep.” Even though I’m being nice, they don’t know my voice. They get skittish. They want to go somewhere where they feel more safe. A flock of sheep feels safe with its shepherd. They trust the shepherd. So, if we didn’t already know this, there are competing voices out there that want things from us, whether they want our money or they want our allegiance or they want our vote or they want our voice. And often enough we can find ourselves following when we should slow down. We’ve been learning quite a bit about how we got…it doesn’t have to be a major slowdown, it’s just gotta be we are intentional about not reacting. There are forces out there that want to steal, kill, and destroy. And that’s a pretty sure bet if we’ve lost the voice of our Shepherd and have gotten isolated. If we’ll think this through. Like, if we’ll actually take some time to meditate on this today many things start making sense and it should give us a profound desire to hear the voice of the Shepherd and to know the voice of the Shepherd. And we might think, “I know…I do…I do…I’ve walked with the Lord for years. And, so, I know what that feels like within me when God is prompting or leading or speaking.” And others maybe like, “I just don’t even know where to start.” Simple enough way to start is to simply become aware of your senses, which is not to say like, “oh, just follow your feelings around.” But when something feels off…isn’t it weird how we can be in a situation that looks normal but something’s not right, something’s not right. We don’t know what it is but something’s not right. And, so, we have this kind of intuition. Sometimes we can figure it out sometimes we can’t. If we’re slowed down enough we can ask ourselves, “is this prompting…is this sense…like if…if I’m gonna go forward with this…this path that I'm…that I’m deciding, will this lead me into life abundant? Is my shepherd there? Like, is this gonna lead me deeper into Jesus or is this about me and my own gratification in some sort of way?” If we just get basic, then we can build a foundation and begin to mature. We can simply ask, “can…can this be done in the name of Jesus? Does this bring love? Will I be known by my love that I’m a disciple in this situation? We don’t have to be rocket scientists or have a PhD in theology. My neighbor’s sheep don’t. I don’t even know if they know their sheep to be honest, but I do know that they know the voice of their shepherd, which in this particular story from Jesus seems to be the goal. So, it’s an attainable goal. And if we learn the voice of our shepherd and follow the voice of our shepherd into pasture, well that might change our whole life. And, so, let’s meditate upon that today and move in that direction today because that will lead us deeper and closer to Jesus today.

Prayer:

Holy Spirit come. We need to know Your voice. We need to know it clearly. And we confess that so often we’re confused about it, but that might be less about Your withholding from us and more about our unwillingness to cultivate, to learn, to listen, to be present. And, so, help us Holy Spirit because how we’ve navigated this far in so many situations without Your voice, that's…it’s a miracle. It’s Your kindness and Your mercy and Your patience, shepherding us when were not even listening. But the joy of listening means that we will be led into pasture and we won’t be stolen or killed or destroyed. So, come Holy Spirit. Help us to hear Your voice today we pray. In Jesus’ name we ask. Amen.

Hi DAB family this is Gigi from GVille. I wanted to share with you something today that I feel like it was the word from the Lord or for…for us and it is in Isaiah…it’s Isaiah 52 verse 2 it says shake thy self from the dust arise and sit down in a good sit Oh Jerusalem, loose thyself from the bands of thy neck oh captive daughter of Zion. And what I…I feel like the Lord is saying is that he has won the victory. He has done it, but it takes our faith, our response to Him we have to…to remove that…that band around our neck, to rise off…rise off from the floor and the dust and in the dirt and be able to, you know, sit it His authority enthroned with Him on high and to be able to move forward in His victory. We have to claim it, we have to believe that He has done it. Because the…the devil comes around like a roaring lion, but his only power is to deceive us, that the victory isn’t won, we’re still fighting, we have to work hard. And…and we fail. We don’t have the power, but God gives us the power and He has done it and in faith we respond, we receive, and the Lord has delivered us. In Jesus’ name I speak victory over you guys. You guys run the race, stand in the power of God and you will see what God has done in your life and overcome. And the world will know that He lives within you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Hello Daily Audio Bible this is Dwayne from Wisconsin. All praise and glory to our wonderful Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Today is May 15th and I’m calling you with a heavy heart. The Lord will keep him safe, that he will find some direction. He is lost, he’s got a lot going on. So, some of you know, you have prodigal sons so you know what that’s like. So, I’m just asking that you would please lift up my son Nathan, that God will wrap him in His arms, keep him safe and that his eyes will be opened and that he gets the help that he needs. Thank you DAB. Love you all pray for you all.

And Father, please bless this family with the community around them that love them dearly and every day. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

This message is for God’s Smile. This is momma ‘D’ in New Albany, Indiana. I heard your story today about how when you and Peter first got together and how you had surrendered him over to God. And I, several days ago, had called in and asked for prayer for my…I’ve been standing in faith for my marriage for 2 years now and he has divorced me, but the Lord has told me to stand, and I’ve been standing for his salvation and for the restoration of our marriage. And I was driving along, I’m…I’m just driving today, on my way out of town and I was…I guess feeling a little angry and I was saying, “you know Lord, I want him saved, I don’t even think that I want him back anymore” and just as I was feeling that I heard your story about Peter and I was reminded of a time, many years ago when my husband Jim…and I do still call him my husband…my husband Jim and I were just dating but I didn’t know if we were going to be together long-term cause he was not saved. And I remember sitting at my prayer closet one night after my children were asleep and surrendering him to God and saying “God you know, I…I, I want him saved and I want us to be together and if you will do that I will praise you all the days of my life and if you don’t do that I’m still gonna praise you all the days of my life. And within a week Jim got saved and within another week he proposed to me and I said I’m so glad you’re saved now because now I can say yes. And he’s fallen away, and he’s stepped out of our marriage for something else, but the Lord said to me, “don’t you think I could do it again?” Thank you for your encouragement God’s Smile, thank you so, so much. God used you today.
