2 Chronicles 33:14-34:33

14 Afterward he rebuilt the outer wall of the City of David, west of the Gihon(A) spring in the valley, as far as the entrance of the Fish Gate(B) and encircling the hill of Ophel;(C) he also made it much higher. He stationed military commanders in all the fortified cities in Judah.

15 He got rid of the foreign gods and removed(D) the image from the temple of the Lord, as well as all the altars he had built on the temple hill and in Jerusalem; and he threw them out of the city. 16 Then he restored the altar of the Lord and sacrificed fellowship offerings and thank offerings(E) on it, and told Judah to serve the Lord, the God of Israel. 17 The people, however, continued to sacrifice at the high places, but only to the Lord their God.

18 The other events of Manasseh’s reign, including his prayer to his God and the words the seers spoke to him in the name of the Lord, the God of Israel, are written in the annals of the kings of Israel.[a] 19 His prayer and how God was moved by his entreaty, as well as all his sins and unfaithfulness, and the sites where he built high places and set up Asherah poles and idols before he humbled(F) himself—all these are written in the records of the seers.[b](G) 20 Manasseh rested with his ancestors and was buried(H) in his palace. And Amon his son succeeded him as king.

Amon King of Judah(I)

21 Amon(J) was twenty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem two years. 22 He did evil in the eyes of the Lord, as his father Manasseh had done. Amon worshiped and offered sacrifices to all the idols Manasseh had made. 23 But unlike his father Manasseh, he did not humble(K) himself before the Lord; Amon increased his guilt.

24 Amon’s officials conspired against him and assassinated him in his palace. 25 Then the people(L) of the land killed all who had plotted against King Amon, and they made Josiah his son king in his place.

Josiah’s Reforms(M)(N)(O)

34 Josiah(P) was eight years old when he became king,(Q) and he reigned in Jerusalem thirty-one years. He did what was right in the eyes of the Lord and followed the ways of his father David,(R) not turning aside to the right or to the left.

In the eighth year of his reign, while he was still young, he began to seek the God(S) of his father David. In his twelfth year he began to purge Judah and Jerusalem of high places, Asherah poles and idols. Under his direction the altars of the Baals were torn down; he cut to pieces the incense altars that were above them, and smashed the Asherah poles(T) and the idols. These he broke to pieces and scattered over the graves of those who had sacrificed to them.(U) He burned(V) the bones of the priests on their altars, and so he purged Judah and Jerusalem. In the towns of Manasseh, Ephraim and Simeon, as far as Naphtali, and in the ruins around them, he tore down the altars and the Asherah poles and crushed the idols to powder(W) and cut to pieces all the incense altars throughout Israel. Then he went back to Jerusalem.

In the eighteenth year of Josiah’s reign, to purify the land and the temple, he sent Shaphan son of Azaliah and Maaseiah the ruler of the city, with Joah son of Joahaz, the recorder, to repair the temple of the Lord his God.

They went to Hilkiah(X) the high priest and gave him the money that had been brought into the temple of God, which the Levites who were the gatekeepers had collected from the people of Manasseh, Ephraim and the entire remnant of Israel and from all the people of Judah and Benjamin and the inhabitants of Jerusalem. 10 Then they entrusted it to the men appointed to supervise the work on the Lord’s temple. These men paid the workers who repaired and restored the temple. 11 They also gave money(Y) to the carpenters and builders to purchase dressed stone, and timber for joists and beams for the buildings that the kings of Judah had allowed to fall into ruin.(Z)

12 The workers labored faithfully.(AA) Over them to direct them were Jahath and Obadiah, Levites descended from Merari, and Zechariah and Meshullam, descended from Kohath. The Levites—all who were skilled in playing musical instruments—(AB) 13 had charge of the laborers(AC) and supervised all the workers from job to job. Some of the Levites were secretaries, scribes and gatekeepers.

The Book of the Law Found(AD)(AE)

14 While they were bringing out the money that had been taken into the temple of the Lord, Hilkiah the priest found the Book of the Law of the Lord that had been given through Moses. 15 Hilkiah said to Shaphan the secretary, “I have found the Book of the Law(AF) in the temple of the Lord.” He gave it to Shaphan.

16 Then Shaphan took the book to the king and reported to him: “Your officials are doing everything that has been committed to them. 17 They have paid out the money that was in the temple of the Lord and have entrusted it to the supervisors and workers.” 18 Then Shaphan the secretary informed the king, “Hilkiah the priest has given me a book.” And Shaphan read from it in the presence of the king.

19 When the king heard the words of the Law,(AG) he tore(AH) his robes. 20 He gave these orders to Hilkiah, Ahikam son of Shaphan(AI), Abdon son of Micah,[c] Shaphan the secretary and Asaiah the king’s attendant: 21 “Go and inquire of the Lord for me and for the remnant in Israel and Judah about what is written in this book that has been found. Great is the Lord’s anger that is poured out(AJ) on us because those who have gone before us have not kept the word of the Lord; they have not acted in accordance with all that is written in this book.”

22 Hilkiah and those the king had sent with him[d] went to speak to the prophet(AK) Huldah, who was the wife of Shallum son of Tokhath,[e] the son of Hasrah,[f] keeper of the wardrobe. She lived in Jerusalem, in the New Quarter.

23 She said to them, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: Tell the man who sent you to me, 24 ‘This is what the Lord says: I am going to bring disaster(AL) on this place and its people(AM)—all the curses(AN) written in the book that has been read in the presence of the king of Judah. 25 Because they have forsaken me(AO) and burned incense to other gods and aroused my anger by all that their hands have made,[g] my anger will be poured out on this place and will not be quenched.’ 26 Tell the king of Judah, who sent you to inquire of the Lord, ‘This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says concerning the words you heard: 27 Because your heart was responsive(AP) and you humbled(AQ) yourself before God when you heard what he spoke against this place and its people, and because you humbled yourself before me and tore your robes and wept in my presence, I have heard you, declares the Lord. 28 Now I will gather you to your ancestors,(AR) and you will be buried in peace. Your eyes will not see all the disaster I am going to bring on this place and on those who live here.’”(AS)

So they took her answer back to the king.

29 Then the king called together all the elders of Judah and Jerusalem. 30 He went up to the temple of the Lord(AT) with the people of Judah, the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the priests and the Levites—all the people from the least to the greatest. He read in their hearing all the words of the Book of the Covenant, which had been found in the temple of the Lord. 31 The king stood by his pillar(AU) and renewed the covenant(AV) in the presence of the Lord—to follow(AW) the Lord and keep his commands, statutes and decrees with all his heart and all his soul, and to obey the words of the covenant written in this book.

32 Then he had everyone in Jerusalem and Benjamin pledge themselves to it; the people of Jerusalem did this in accordance with the covenant of God, the God of their ancestors.

33 Josiah removed all the detestable(AX) idols from all the territory belonging to the Israelites, and he had all who were present in Israel serve the Lord their God. As long as he lived, they did not fail to follow the Lord, the God of their ancestors.

2 Chronicles 32:1-33:13, Romans 15:23-16:9, Psalms 25:16-22, Proverbs 20:16-18

Today is the 2nd day of August…I almost said June…no idea…2nd day of August, a brand-new month we’re moving into and the next up forward leads us back into the book of second Chronicles. We have a couple of days left in second Chronicles before concluding the book. And, so, let’s take the next step forward. We’re reading from the New International Version this week. And today second Chronicles chapter 32 verse 1 through 33 verse 13.

Commentary:

Okay. In second Chronicles today we are moving through the story of King Hezekiah, who was a good and faithful and loyal King to God. And we’ve met Hezekiah before back when we were moving through second Kings. And, so, this is not unfamiliar. But the lesson that is embedded in this story as we apply it to our own lives becomes really important. So, the Assyrian Empire has invaded the land under the rule of their king Sennacherib. And Sennacherib sent a message to Jerusalem, and he said, “on what are you basing your confidence that you remain in Jerusalem under siege? When Hezekiah says the Lord, our God will save us from the hand of the king of Assyria he is misleading you to let you die of hunger and thirst. Do you not know what I and my predecessors have done to all the peoples of the other lands? Were the gods of those nations ever able to deliver their land from my hand? Who of all the gods of these nations that my predecessors destroyed has been able to save his people from me? How then can your God deliver you from my hand?” And there’s more to what he had to say but that's…that pretty much encapsulates what’s going on here. And what is that kind of speech? That is called intimidation. It is intended to demoralize. It is taunting. It is intended to weaken resolve. It’s basically a form of psychological warfare. And just take a pause. Let’s kinda take a step back and think about the demoralizing taunting intimidating voices that we have encountered in our lives or perhaps that are a part of our story right now. In so many ways it’s just a junior form of psychological warfare. And what does it do to us? It stops us in our tracks, right, and makes us think with doubt about what we thought we knew. It makes us not so sure. It saps our energy. It can break our will. And the irony is that this type of attack is actually very very effective. It can cause us to question everything and become totally uncertain. Ironically, they’re just words. They’re not things that are happening, they’re words that are intended to show us what will happen even though there is no way anyone can be certain of those things. The king of Assyria had his own certainty. “Has anyone ever been able to stand up to us before? What makes you think your God can stand up to us now?” And, so, even though Sennacherib and his army are not there and cannot actually attack and destroy the city without a siege, even though they’re a distance away, their words bring them close, and the work is being done. The work of warfare is being done psychologically on the people. That happens to us, whether it’s the demoralizing doubt that we face in our lives that we sometimes call an attack, a spiritual attack or whether it’s a demoralizing person in our lives that is sapping our strength and affecting our will and desire to do what is right. These things ruin confidence and introduce fear when they are words that do not have corresponding actions. They may have corresponding actions, but it’s going to look different than the taunt. The taunt is there to tear us down. So, if you’re in Jerusalem and the mighty Assyrian Empire has invaded your land and the king is sent his emissaries to taunt and demoralize you and tell you what is going to happen to you, you may indeed be fearful. But the story as told in second Chronicles, ends very different than Sennacherib the king of the Assyria was predicting. And I quote from second Chronicles. “King Hezekiah and prophet Isaiah, son of Amoz cried out in prayer to heaven about this and the Lord sent an angel who annihilated all the fighting men in the commanders and officers in the camp of the Assyrian king. So, he withdrew to his own land in disgrace and when he went into the temple of his God some of his sons, his own flesh and blood, cut him down with the sword.” That’s a very different ending than the taunts and intimidation that was hurled at the walls of Jerusalem. Let’s remember this when we feel demoralized, when we feel taunted, when we feel intimidated. We can spend all of our energy biting our nails to the quick and fretting and being filled until we’re sick with anxiety or we can do everything that we know to do to be faithful and loyal to the mission that God has asked us to accomplish and we can put our trust, we can cry out to God and allow the voice of truth to speak louder and more clearly than anything that would intimidate us into doubt and denial and failure. And, so, let’s give it some thought today. What are those voices that are really there and do nothing but intimidate us or taunt us into believing lies about the future and lies about ourselves?

Prayer:

Holy Spirit, we invite you to come into that. We have all faced this. Ae all do face this from time to time in all kinds of different ways. And even as we’re considering this now we…those voices, those ways bubble up inside of us and we’re all aware of our own stories. And as we look at those stories, we can see how we’ve been led into fear and intimidation and how we have settled and how we have caved and all kinds of things we can see as we look back over our lives, but we are also realizing that so many of the threats are just words. They’re words. Things can come against us, but they don’t work the way the threats work usually. So, often the threat is there giving us a picture of something so much worse than can even possibly happen and we just settle in cave when you have invited us to be true and loyal and faithful. And, so, Holy Spirit come. Identify the voices that are in our lives, whether they’re the voice of a person or group of people or a set of circumstances or just a set of fears that we’ve carried with us our whole lives. However, that voice of intimidation is speaking to us Holy Spirit, help us to identify this. Show us the root of this and show us that you are in this with us and we can trust you. We ask this in the precious name of Jesus. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hey this is Candace from Oregon. I just listened to Brian giving his talk about Romans 12. Oh, my goodness. You know just one more example of the strengthening again from this ministry. And, so, I thank God and I thank you Brian. I’m about to lose a pastor me and my church. You know we are switching to a new pastor. We don’t know who the new one will be. But the old one we’ve had for many decades, and he has been more than a pastor to us. He’s been a really good pastor, but he’s been a really good friend. And wow! It just really just a huge __ for us, for me and for many and for them. They’re going into a completely different kind of life. So, would you pray with me now? Lord, I pray for Carl and Lori Leak and I ask you Lord to make them…just to pave the way before them as they move from Oregon back to Michigan where they have children and grandchildren. Bless them with sweet surprises Lord and make the December 13th farewell retirement party everything you want it to be Lord to honor you Lord and honor what is taking place here in this ministry and to honor Carl and Lori. Be with my church or Kels church as we seek out this new pastor and bless him and his family as well in Jesus’ name I pray. And thank you for the stability of Daily Audio Bible in my life and in so many others.

Hi, it’s Shannon from Texas and I’m sure people have been calling in for this, but I would like to call in again and ask for prayer for rain, literal and spiritual, a physical and spiritual rain and all of these areas. I’m in Texas and anyone who lives in Texas right now knows that it is a serious drought, and this month has…we’ve got to get some relief for our crops. We have to have rain. And we have authority and dominion over the elements when we understand the Kingdom. So, I’m believing and know that you guys will believe in with me. And, so, it is. Shalom. Love you.

Hey everybody this is Philip My Cup from Michigan. Just calling real quick to give a little update and ask for some prayer. My wife and I had a beautiful baby girl. We’re just so blessed with that. God how perfect. It’s just…what a change in my life to have a…just to be a father. Everybody says it. It changes in your body like a switch and it’s honestly not something I knew until it happened. Its…holy crap am I just blessed with that. And, you know, just giving huge thanks to God for…my wife is recovering so well, the baby’s just amazing. So yeah, thank you for that Lord. Just this evening my father-in-law Sean was in an incident. He was physically assaulted. Just brought my mother-in-law to the hospital to be with him and I’m just asking you guys to lift Sean up in prayer and just to be with my family, you know, as we go through some…my family, my in laws, me, everybody, we try to battle with forgiveness and we try to deal with the healing process of Sean. And we just pray for the medical staff and the police officers, EMS drivers. And I don’t remember your name but the girl that called in about the identity thing. I should mention I’m a little bit far behind on my readings after having the baby. But yeah, I’m gonna follow your suit and ask that we pray for the people that assaulted my father-in-law and just on their behalf we could all repent against their…their wrongdoings and just get the enemy out of the situation. I’d appreciate it. Love all you guys. Love hearing from you. Hope you have a great day.

Good morning Daily Audio Bible family this is Wrapped in His Unfailing Love, Dorothy from Destin. I wanted to share with you something that God gave me. I saw a little girl in my mind’s eye. She was maybe two or three and she was having a fit in the middle of a Walmart let’s say, just tired and couldn’t have what she wanted, and she was just crying and throwing a temper tantrum and her dad came to her and picked her up and put her head on his shoulder and she began to settle down and she walked through the store, and she began to fall asleep. And to me that was just a manifestation of what God does to us when we are in the midst of all our problems, and we don’t know what to do and we’re just wringing our hands. And all he wants us to do is rest in Him. But we have to ask Him. But the Lord waits for you to come to Him so that he could show you His love and compassion for the Lord is faithful, a faithful God. Blessed are those who wait for him to help them. Isaiah 30. So, rest in the shadow of His wings. Rest in His love. And when things are seeming like they’re out of control God knows and He has you. I love you family. Thank you Brian for this wonderful ministry. God bless you all.

Good morning DAB community this is Penny, One Penny Saved from southwest Missouri. And I’m on a walk and just thought I would call in to offer support and hope to those who are struggling with addictions or compulsive addictive behaviors and to keep in mind that I went through years in bondage and the word of God is what will heal you. And of course, addiction and anxiety are Satan’s way to kill and steal and destroy us because it literally rocks world. And I just want to remind you to play God’s word and make sure those beautiful words are going out into the air because Satan hears those too. And first thing in the morning, start off with the word so your mind does not wander. With me it was like while I put on my makeup or got ready for the day, that’s when my mind would wander into places that I have no business being. And if I play the word first thing in the morning my thoughts will be captured and reigned in into the right place, which is of course praising God, listening to DAB, praying for others. I love you guys. Hang in there.

2 Chronicles 32:1-33:13

Sennacherib Threatens Jerusalem(A)(B)

32 After all that Hezekiah had so faithfully done, Sennacherib(C) king of Assyria came and invaded Judah. He laid siege to the fortified cities, thinking to conquer them for himself. When Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib had come and that he intended to wage war against Jerusalem,(D) he consulted with his officials and military staff about blocking off the water from the springs outside the city, and they helped him. They gathered a large group of people who blocked all the springs(E) and the stream that flowed through the land. “Why should the kings[a] of Assyria come and find plenty of water?” they said. Then he worked hard repairing all the broken sections of the wall(F) and building towers on it. He built another wall outside that one and reinforced the terraces[b](G) of the City of David. He also made large numbers of weapons(H) and shields.

He appointed military officers over the people and assembled them before him in the square at the city gate and encouraged them with these words: “Be strong and courageous.(I) Do not be afraid or discouraged(J) because of the king of Assyria and the vast army with him, for there is a greater power with us than with him.(K) With him is only the arm of flesh,(L) but with us(M) is the Lord our God to help us and to fight our battles.”(N) And the people gained confidence from what Hezekiah the king of Judah said.

Later, when Sennacherib king of Assyria and all his forces were laying siege to Lachish,(O) he sent his officers to Jerusalem with this message for Hezekiah king of Judah and for all the people of Judah who were there:

10 “This is what Sennacherib king of Assyria says: On what are you basing your confidence,(P) that you remain in Jerusalem under siege? 11 When Hezekiah says, ‘The Lord our God will save us from the hand of the king of Assyria,’ he is misleading(Q) you, to let you die of hunger and thirst. 12 Did not Hezekiah himself remove this god’s high places and altars, saying to Judah and Jerusalem, ‘You must worship before one altar(R) and burn sacrifices on it’?

13 “Do you not know what I and my predecessors have done to all the peoples of the other lands? Were the gods of those nations ever able to deliver their land from my hand?(S) 14 Who of all the gods of these nations that my predecessors destroyed has been able to save his people from me? How then can your god deliver you from my hand? 15 Now do not let Hezekiah deceive(T) you and mislead you like this. Do not believe him, for no god of any nation or kingdom has been able to deliver(U) his people from my hand or the hand of my predecessors.(V) How much less will your god deliver you from my hand!”

16 Sennacherib’s officers spoke further against the Lord God and against his servant Hezekiah. 17 The king also wrote letters(W) ridiculing(X) the Lord, the God of Israel, and saying this against him: “Just as the gods(Y) of the peoples of the other lands did not rescue their people from my hand, so the god of Hezekiah will not rescue his people from my hand.” 18 Then they called out in Hebrew to the people of Jerusalem who were on the wall, to terrify them and make them afraid in order to capture the city. 19 They spoke about the God of Jerusalem as they did about the gods of the other peoples of the world—the work of human hands.(Z)

20 King Hezekiah and the prophet Isaiah son of Amoz cried out in prayer(AA) to heaven about this. 21 And the Lord sent an angel,(AB) who annihilated all the fighting men and the commanders and officers in the camp of the Assyrian king. So he withdrew to his own land in disgrace. And when he went into the temple of his god, some of his sons, his own flesh and blood, cut him down with the sword.(AC)

22 So the Lord saved Hezekiah and the people of Jerusalem from the hand of Sennacherib king of Assyria and from the hand of all others. He took care of them[c] on every side. 23 Many brought offerings to Jerusalem for the Lord and valuable gifts(AD) for Hezekiah king of Judah. From then on he was highly regarded by all the nations.

Hezekiah’s Pride, Success and Death(AE)

24 In those days Hezekiah became ill and was at the point of death. He prayed to the Lord, who answered him and gave him a miraculous sign.(AF) 25 But Hezekiah’s heart was proud(AG) and he did not respond to the kindness shown him; therefore the Lord’s wrath(AH) was on him and on Judah and Jerusalem. 26 Then Hezekiah repented(AI) of the pride of his heart, as did the people of Jerusalem; therefore the Lord’s wrath did not come on them during the days of Hezekiah.(AJ)

27 Hezekiah had very great wealth and honor,(AK) and he made treasuries for his silver and gold and for his precious stones, spices, shields and all kinds of valuables. 28 He also made buildings to store the harvest of grain, new wine and olive oil; and he made stalls for various kinds of cattle, and pens for the flocks. 29 He built villages and acquired great numbers of flocks and herds, for God had given him very great riches.(AL)

30 It was Hezekiah who blocked(AM) the upper outlet of the Gihon(AN) spring and channeled(AO) the water down to the west side of the City of David. He succeeded in everything he undertook. 31 But when envoys were sent by the rulers of Babylon(AP) to ask him about the miraculous sign(AQ) that had occurred in the land, God left him to test(AR) him and to know everything that was in his heart.

32 The other events of Hezekiah’s reign and his acts of devotion are written in the vision of the prophet Isaiah son of Amoz in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel. 33 Hezekiah rested with his ancestors and was buried on the hill where the tombs of David’s descendants are. All Judah and the people of Jerusalem honored him when he died. And Manasseh his son succeeded him as king.

Manasseh King of Judah(AS)(AT)

33 Manasseh(AU) was twelve years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem fifty-five years. He did evil in the eyes of the Lord,(AV) following the detestable(AW) practices of the nations the Lord had driven out before the Israelites. He rebuilt the high places his father Hezekiah had demolished; he also erected altars to the Baals and made Asherah poles.(AX) He bowed down(AY) to all the starry hosts and worshiped them. He built altars in the temple of the Lord, of which the Lord had said, “My Name(AZ) will remain in Jerusalem forever.” In both courts of the temple of the Lord,(BA) he built altars to all the starry hosts. He sacrificed his children(BB) in the fire in the Valley of Ben Hinnom, practiced divination and witchcraft, sought omens, and consulted mediums(BC) and spiritists.(BD) He did much evil in the eyes of the Lord, arousing his anger.

He took the image he had made and put it in God’s temple,(BE) of which God had said to David and to his son Solomon, “In this temple and in Jerusalem, which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel, I will put my Name forever. I will not again make the feet of the Israelites leave the land(BF) I assigned to your ancestors, if only they will be careful to do everything I commanded them concerning all the laws, decrees and regulations given through Moses.” But Manasseh led Judah and the people of Jerusalem astray, so that they did more evil than the nations the Lord had destroyed before the Israelites.(BG)

10 The Lord spoke to Manasseh and his people, but they paid no attention. 11 So the Lord brought against them the army commanders of the king of Assyria, who took Manasseh prisoner,(BH) put a hook(BI) in his nose, bound him with bronze shackles(BJ) and took him to Babylon. 12 In his distress he sought the favor of the Lord his God and humbled(BK) himself greatly before the God of his ancestors. 13 And when he prayed to him, the Lord was moved by his entreaty and listened to his plea; so he brought him back to Jerusalem and to his kingdom. Then Manasseh knew that the Lord is God.

Paul’s Plan to Visit Rome

23 But now that there is no more place for me to work in these regions, and since I have been longing for many years to visit you,(A) 24 I plan to do so when I go to Spain.(B) I hope to see you while passing through and to have you assist(C) me on my journey there, after I have enjoyed your company for a while. 25 Now, however, I am on my way to Jerusalem(D) in the service(E) of the Lord’s people(F) there. 26 For Macedonia(G) and Achaia(H) were pleased to make a contribution for the poor among the Lord’s people in Jerusalem.(I) 27 They were pleased to do it, and indeed they owe it to them. For if the Gentiles have shared in the Jews’ spiritual blessings, they owe it to the Jews to share with them their material blessings.(J) 28 So after I have completed this task and have made sure that they have received this contribution, I will go to Spain(K) and visit you on the way. 29 I know that when I come to you,(L) I will come in the full measure of the blessing of Christ.

30 I urge you, brothers and sisters, by our Lord Jesus Christ and by the love of the Spirit,(M) to join me in my struggle by praying to God for me.(N) 31 Pray that I may be kept safe(O) from the unbelievers in Judea and that the contribution(P) I take to Jerusalem may be favorably received by the Lord’s people(Q) there, 32 so that I may come to you(R) with joy, by God’s will,(S) and in your company be refreshed.(T) 33 The God of peace(U) be with you all. Amen.

Personal Greetings

16 I commend(V) to you our sister Phoebe, a deacon[a][b] of the church in Cenchreae.(W) I ask you to receive her in the Lord(X) in a way worthy of his people(Y) and to give her any help she may need from you, for she has been the benefactor of many people, including me.

2 Chronicles 30:1-31:21, Romans 15:1-22, Psalm 25:1-15, Proverbs 20:13-15

Today, is the first day of the month of August. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian. Brand new, shiny, sparkly month here for us. And we’re really just getting moved into this brand-new week that we’ve begun. Today, is the 213th day of the year, which means it’s our 213th step together as we move through the year and through the Bible. So, it is great to be here with you today, like it is every day. In fact, thank you. Thank you for being together with me today, thank you for letting me be together with you today, as we immerse ourselves in the Scriptures and allow them to speak into this day and into our lives. And our next step will lead us to the point of the previous step. And that leads us back into the book of 2nd Chronicles. I mentioned yesterday, before this week is out we will have concluded 2nd Chronicles and the letter to the Romans and so, before this week is out we’ll be in new territory all together. So, we’re really moving into a brand-new month and kind of resetting a lot of things during this week. But our next step still leads us forward in the book of 2nd Chronicles and today we will read chapters 30 and 31.

Commentary:

Okay, in Paul’s letter to the Romans we’re kind of picking up something or a theme that has already been going on in the book but was begun to be unpacked in yesterday’s reading. And that is, what are the postures like, how do we posture ourselves toward one-another, in such a way that it promotes unity? Like, how do we live with so many people, with so many stories, so many convictions. What are the postures that we can hold onto that if we live in these postures will promote unity among us? And it’s not so hard for us to look out over Christendom and realize there are plenty of people who feel a lot of different ways and have a lot of different convictions that oppose one another and there are conflicts. But there were conflicts at the time of Paul as well and much of that boiled down to the Jews and the Gentiles who had not been in fellowship or communion with one another and didn’t even fraternize with one another.  So, the Hebrew people, and we’ve talked about this before, the Hebrew people, Jesus was the Hebrew Messiah and when He came into this story, He came into this story as a Hebrew person and He grew up as a Hebrew and He talked from the Hebrew scriptures. And He was thought to be a Hebrew prophet. And, not all, but so much of His ministry was centered among the Jewish people. And so, the people who had become to believe in Jesus, who were Jewish, they had a claim to Jesus, basically. Saying look, all of the things are in a Hebrew context. Jesus is the Hebrew Messiah. Jesus observed the law and was aware of it. In fact, we believe he fulfilled the law even though He got in trouble over the law’s interpretation, at times. So, for the Jewish people, they’re like, this is the next step in the Jewish story. For this to include Gentiles and for them to be given like a different set of rules, invariably created some conflict. Because the thought was, certainly a Gentile can be included in the story but they need to convert to Judaism and follow God’s law and incorporate themselves into the culture and then follow Jesus. And they weren’t really in position where they could just decide we don’t like them anymore, let’s just make a new denomination. And we’ll make our charter this way and this theology and this way we are guarding the truth. And then when people don’t agree with that anymore they go form their own little clan, make a new denomination so that there are thousands and thousands and thousands of them in the world. They didn’t have this kind of freedom or luxury. And Paul, he was a trained Pharisee. So, he knew this argument and he knew this tension very well and he has simply like, if we’re really boiling it down, Paul is trying to say to the Jews, Jesus isn’t just the Savior of the Jews. He is that but that’s not all He is. He is the Savior of the world. Or to just quote from Paul and put it back into his own words, “I tell you that Christ has become the servant of the Jews on behalf of God’s truth so that the promises made to the Patriarchs might be confirmed and moreover, that the Gentiles might glorify God for His mercy.” And then Paul quotes from the Hebrew scriptures, from 2nd Samuel, from the Psalms, from the book of Deuteronomy text from the Hebrew scriptures that bare this out, “Therefore, I will praise you among the Gentiles, I will sing the praises of your name,” or “Rejoice you Gentiles with His people,” or “Praise the Lord all you Gentiles, let all the peoples extoll him.” Or from the book of Isaiah, “The root of Jesse will spring up one that will rise to rule over the nations. In Him, the Gentiles will hope.” So basically, there is a pretty generous, maybe over-the-top amount of conflict going on. And when I say maybe over-the-top a little bit cause these kinds of conflicts had made people make pacts to assassinate people like Paul. So, that’s like high level confrontation if you’re going to hide, ambush and kill somebody over what they believe. Paul’s trying to say basically, calm down this was foretold. It’s just that people didn’t calm down. The idea of an inclusive kingdom like, that everyone could become a part of the story when the Jewish people had been told they were set apart and Holy. They could not get their minds around this inclusiveness, that everyone who comes to Jesus in a leap of faith, reaching out in faith, that person isn’t a Jew or a Greek or male or a female or a slave or a free-person, that person is a new creation, a child of God. And so, there were disagreements and conflicts. And this conflict may have been over Jews and Gentiles and 2000 years later, we may look out across the globe and say the Gentiles won the day because the church is largely made up of a majority of Gentiles. But I don’t know if you’ve notices, Gentiles aren’t all on the same page either. And so, so much of what we’re talking about boils down to a fight about who gets to be included. Who gets to be in. And many people in this day and age have many varying opinions about that. And so, we just have to take a step back and ask ourselves like, can somebody who doesn’t believe the same way that I do about certain aspects of the faith but they do believe in Jesus like I do. Like, are they, are they in? Or a person who does some things or lives a certain way or has certain practices that we weren’t raised to do. We were told those things are wrong and so, we have these convictions from our own story that we apply to them and we think that they’re sinning. But they truly believe that Jesus is Savior and has died to take away their sins and they have reached out in faith and have accepted this gift. We spend a tremendous amount of energy on things like this. And if we like, we’ve just took a step back let’s take another step back and realize, we can fight it out however we want to fight it out. We don’t have a say. We are talking about the position of God. God is the judge. God will say what’s going to happen. And God can look at a person in a way that a human being can’t. God looks upon the truth of their heart. I’ve been a human being like, as long as I can remember, literally. And I know that human beings can be dishonest and deceptive and deceitful. I know that human beings can pretend to be something that they’re not. And I know that human beings can fool other human beings even over a very long stretch of time. I also believe that God isn’t fooled by any of it. God see’s the truth of the matter. God has all the power. God has all the authority. God is the judge. And so, we spend a lot of time really trying to defend the theological framework or walls that we build around ourselves so that we can lob shots at somebody who doesn’t see things that way. Even to the point of feeling like they can’t possibly be anything but deceived and it’s very, very sad that they’re probably not going to make it. It’s just that us feeling that way, doesn’t have anything to do with anything. God will look upon the heart. God will make the judgement. And in so many ways, this is where Paul lands this. And I quote from the letter to the Romans, “May the God who gives endurance and encouragement, give you the same attitude of mind toward each other that Christ Jesus had, so that with one mind and with one voice you may glorify the God of our Father, Lord Jesus Christ. Accept one another than just as Christ accepted you in order to bring praise to God.” And so, again, just going back to maybe 14, 13, 14, 15th chapter of Romans. Just kind of listening to what Paul is laying out, seeing that there are postures that promote unity and postures that don’t. Understanding that we already know that to be true. We’ve been humans and we’ve been in human conflict in some sort of way, even from childhood. So, we understand that there are certain ways that we behave that cause conflict and certain ways that promote unity. And often we’re willing to, we’re willing to engage in conflict in order to be right or to defend our rights. But that is very, that is very self-focused, it is about us. When the posture of heart that we are to have is one that exemplifies, reveals, worships, illuminates Jesus the Savior of the world. And so, it’s actually worth some time, even if it’s just 5 minutes of silence, just a few minutes to think about how much conflict we get ourselves into or how much conflict we get drawn into and how much energy that takes and how much of it is unnecessary expenditure of energy that could be applied to something good. Which isn’t to say that all conflict is bad like, conflict is how we grow. Especially if conflict is properly and respectfully done where it’s a sharing of a disagreement and the ideas that are behind that agreement with the hope of actually learning. And we find in those kinds of conflicts nobody’s completely right and nobody’s completely wrong. And we find meat in the middle and learn some things that we didn’t know before. But if the whole thing is about us being right then we go to war. And we do everything that we can to like, just destroy the argument of the other person. And so, we have to wonder like, is all that energy, if we win those battles have, did we keep God on the throne? Did we successfully defend God so that He didn’t fall out of heaven? Nothing that we have to say and nothing that we think can stop the power of God. And so, so often we think we’re defending God. We’re actually trying to defend our own insecurities. Some of these things are a waste of energy. And if we just imagine what we may be able to do with that energy and time if we were able to harvest it and recover it back into our lives and not waste it on fruitless conflict, especially among the brothers and sisters in the Lord? Ah, we could put a dent in some things. And so, let’s give that some thought today.

Prayer:

Holy Spirit, we invite you into that, we are all guilty. Everybody knows what’s being talked about here, everybody knows what interpersonal conflict is like. Everybody knows the battle to be right. Everybody knows that those battles usually end up in a draw and nobody’s happy with it. What if we just changed our whole perspective and understood that our postures in the way that we interact with each other are representing You, they’re not about us. There about revealing who you are to the world and what a dramatic shift has happened in our lives because You loved us, even when we were in conflict with You. Come, Holy Spirit, into this, help us to get a vision for how much energy and time we could recover, if we didn’t waste it on fruitless conflict. We ask Holy Spirit, that You would lead us into all truth, in this and every matter. We ask this in the precious name of Jesus our Savior. Amen.

Prayer and Encouragements:

Hello DAB, this is God’s Tree for I have many branches but I’m rooted in every word of God. I want to give a praise report to those who are suffering with depression and thoughts of suicide. Listen to this praise report. I’ve been with DAB since about 2007 and I had a best friend who was suffering. He had lost everything, his wife left him, he lost his job, he lost everything and he was on the edge of suicide. And I ministered to him and I prayer for him and I tried to lift him up and then I had to let go and let God. And then I had called in about three years ago when my brother tried to commit suicide. We were able to intervene and we were able to get him the help that he needs. And I praise God, years kept passed, it’s been three years, my brothers is doing good, he is preaching God’s word. He has a beautiful home and a family and a business and he is flourishing. And my best friend he has his own company now, he has people working for him, he has a home and he has travelled all over the world. And he praises God every step of the way. Know that it is not at the end of your rope, it’s just that you got to tie a knot and hold on and let God carry you the rest of the way. So, don’t give up, trust God. He’s gonna show you some absolutely beautiful things. You’re going through for a reason because your blessings are just around the corner. And I give God honor, praise and glory for His blessings and being faithful to us. God loves us unconditionally so, hold onto that. He loves you no matter how lonely you feel. He’s right there with you. Ya’ll continue to pray for me and my family as I pray for you. Bless you Brian and the whole Hardin family and DAB as a whole. This is God’s Tree. I love you.

Good afternoon, DAB family, God Bless you all. Travis from Canada, you called in saying that last summer you pastored a church for your internship in Nordic, Canada. And these people are now being evacuated due to forest fires and a lot of uncertainties of not knowing whether or not they can return to their homes. Father God, like Elijah, Father God, we declare the rains, we declare the rains to come down, Father God, saturating every part of that fire, Father God. In the name above all names, Father God. That every part of that fire, Father God, from the East to the West, to the North, to the South, Father God, is gonna be saturated with the rains of heavens, Father God. Glorifying You Jesus, Father God, in the name of Jesus. And that these families will return to their homes, Father God, in the name of Jesus. And find all things intact, that there will be no loses, Father God. In the name above all names, Father God. Hopeful from Ohio, I am so happy to hear, Father God, that you Hopeful have been, you know, encouraged by the DAB that was shared to you by your co-worker, in the name of Jesus. Know that I am praying for you and that I am believing that you are going to take the steps of bravery, even though you feel you haven’t done so. But just calling in is a sign of bravery, in the name of Jesus. I’m also believing that this spirit of pornography that has attacked your husband, your marriage, your home is gone in the name of Jesus. I declare that to be canceled and eradicated from your home, your life, your husband, in the name above all names, Jesus. That spirit of pornography can no longer have your husband. We command it to leave right now, in the name of Jesus. Betty, from Hamburg, New York. Thank you for that praise report that your son has awakened from this catatonic spirit. We are believing for more awakenings in him, in the name of Jesus. Esther from Haines City.

Lots and lots of people have been praying for my brother Charlie. He’s in a halfway house now out of federal prison, okay. And he’s doing exceptionally well. And said, Charlie, Charlie, you know boy, you need to get God in your life and this conversation was going on back and forth, you know, and he’s like oh yeah, things are going great. He says, you know, about three years ago, something happened to me and it really made me go down on my knees and learn how to accept Christ back into my life and I just want to you guys, I want to love this story cause I want to say, it’s probably right about the time that everybody started praying for him. First and foremost, I want to thank Brian and his family for this. Guys, I do need your help. I would like to pray for my sister. Literally, the most talented chef that I’ve ever met. Probably in the world but I’m a little biased. She feels the world is against her and I know that that’s not her, I know that’s the devil. I try to move closer to God and I try to bring her with me. And I realize this isn’t something I can do alone so, I’m asking for your help. It gets tough but you know, that’s why we turn to God. Just appreciate this platform to call in and ask for your help. Thank you.

2 Chronicles 30-31

Hezekiah Celebrates the Passover

30 Hezekiah sent word to all Israel(A) and Judah and also wrote letters to Ephraim and Manasseh,(B) inviting them to come to the temple of the Lord in Jerusalem and celebrate the Passover(C) to the Lord, the God of Israel. The king and his officials and the whole assembly in Jerusalem decided to celebrate(D) the Passover in the second month. They had not been able to celebrate it at the regular time because not enough priests had consecrated(E) themselves and the people had not assembled in Jerusalem. The plan seemed right both to the king and to the whole assembly. They decided to send a proclamation throughout Israel, from Beersheba to Dan,(F) calling the people to come to Jerusalem and celebrate the Passover to the Lord, the God of Israel. It had not been celebrated in large numbers according to what was written.

At the king’s command, couriers went throughout Israel and Judah with letters from the king and from his officials, which read:

“People of Israel, return to the Lord, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, that he may return to you who are left, who have escaped from the hand of the kings of Assyria. Do not be like your parents(G) and your fellow Israelites, who were unfaithful(H) to the Lord, the God of their ancestors, so that he made them an object of horror,(I) as you see. Do not be stiff-necked,(J) as your ancestors were; submit to the Lord. Come to his sanctuary, which he has consecrated forever. Serve the Lord your God, so that his fierce anger(K) will turn away from you. If you return(L) to the Lord, then your fellow Israelites and your children will be shown compassion(M) by their captors and will return to this land, for the Lord your God is gracious and compassionate.(N) He will not turn his face from you if you return to him.”

10 The couriers went from town to town in Ephraim and Manasseh, as far as Zebulun, but people scorned and ridiculed(O) them. 11 Nevertheless, some from Asher, Manasseh and Zebulun humbled(P) themselves and went to Jerusalem.(Q) 12 Also in Judah the hand of God was on the people to give them unity(R) of mind to carry out what the king and his officials had ordered, following the word of the Lord.

13 A very large crowd of people assembled in Jerusalem to celebrate the Festival of Unleavened Bread(S) in the second month. 14 They removed the altars(T) in Jerusalem and cleared away the incense altars and threw them into the Kidron Valley.(U)

15 They slaughtered the Passover lamb on the fourteenth day of the second month. The priests and the Levites were ashamed and consecrated(V) themselves and brought burnt offerings to the temple of the Lord. 16 Then they took up their regular positions(W) as prescribed in the Law of Moses the man of God. The priests splashed against the altar the blood handed to them by the Levites. 17 Since many in the crowd had not consecrated themselves, the Levites had to kill(X) the Passover lambs for all those who were not ceremonially clean and could not consecrate their lambs[a] to the Lord. 18 Although most of the many people who came from Ephraim, Manasseh, Issachar and Zebulun had not purified themselves,(Y) yet they ate the Passover, contrary to what was written. But Hezekiah prayed for them, saying, “May the Lord, who is good, pardon everyone 19 who sets their heart on seeking God—the Lord, the God of their ancestors—even if they are not clean according to the rules of the sanctuary.” 20 And the Lord heard(Z) Hezekiah and healed(AA) the people.(AB)

21 The Israelites who were present in Jerusalem celebrated the Festival of Unleavened Bread(AC) for seven days with great rejoicing, while the Levites and priests praised the Lord every day with resounding instruments dedicated to the Lord.[b]

22 Hezekiah spoke encouragingly to all the Levites, who showed good understanding of the service of the Lord. For the seven days they ate their assigned portion and offered fellowship offerings and praised[c] the Lord, the God of their ancestors.

23 The whole assembly then agreed to celebrate(AD) the festival seven more days; so for another seven days they celebrated joyfully. 24 Hezekiah king of Judah provided(AE) a thousand bulls and seven thousand sheep and goats for the assembly, and the officials provided them with a thousand bulls and ten thousand sheep and goats. A great number of priests consecrated themselves. 25 The entire assembly of Judah rejoiced, along with the priests and Levites and all who had assembled from Israel(AF), including the foreigners who had come from Israel and also those who resided in Judah. 26 There was great joy in Jerusalem, for since the days of Solomon(AG) son of David king of Israel there had been nothing like this in Jerusalem. 27 The priests and the Levites stood to bless(AH) the people, and God heard them, for their prayer reached heaven, his holy dwelling place.

31 When all this had ended, the Israelites who were there went out to the towns of Judah, smashed the sacred stones and cut down(AI) the Asherah poles. They destroyed the high places and the altars throughout Judah and Benjamin and in Ephraim and Manasseh. After they had destroyed all of them, the Israelites returned to their own towns and to their own property.

Contributions for Worship(AJ)

Hezekiah(AK) assigned the priests and Levites to divisions(AL)—each of them according to their duties as priests or Levites—to offer burnt offerings and fellowship offerings, to minister,(AM) to give thanks and to sing praises(AN) at the gates of the Lord’s dwelling.(AO) The king contributed(AP) from his own possessions for the morning and evening burnt offerings and for the burnt offerings on the Sabbaths, at the New Moons and at the appointed festivals as written in the Law of the Lord.(AQ) He ordered the people living in Jerusalem to give the portion(AR) due the priests and Levites so they could devote themselves to the Law of the Lord. As soon as the order went out, the Israelites generously gave the firstfruits(AS) of their grain, new wine,(AT) olive oil and honey and all that the fields produced. They brought a great amount, a tithe of everything. The people of Israel and Judah who lived in the towns of Judah also brought a tithe(AU) of their herds and flocks and a tithe of the holy things dedicated to the Lord their God, and they piled them in heaps.(AV) They began doing this in the third month and finished in the seventh month.(AW) When Hezekiah and his officials came and saw the heaps, they praised the Lord and blessed(AX) his people Israel.

Hezekiah asked the priests and Levites about the heaps; 10 and Azariah the chief priest, from the family of Zadok,(AY) answered, “Since the people began to bring their contributions to the temple of the Lord, we have had enough to eat and plenty to spare, because the Lord has blessed his people, and this great amount is left over.”(AZ)

11 Hezekiah gave orders to prepare storerooms in the temple of the Lord, and this was done. 12 Then they faithfully brought in the contributions, tithes and dedicated gifts. Konaniah,(BA) a Levite, was the overseer in charge of these things, and his brother Shimei was next in rank. 13 Jehiel, Azaziah, Nahath, Asahel, Jerimoth, Jozabad,(BB) Eliel, Ismakiah, Mahath and Benaiah were assistants of Konaniah and Shimei his brother. All these served by appointment of King Hezekiah and Azariah the official in charge of the temple of God.

14 Kore son of Imnah the Levite, keeper of the East Gate, was in charge of the freewill offerings given to God, distributing the contributions made to the Lord and also the consecrated gifts. 15 Eden,(BC) Miniamin, Jeshua, Shemaiah, Amariah and Shekaniah assisted him faithfully in the towns(BD) of the priests, distributing to their fellow priests according to their divisions, old and young alike.

16 In addition, they distributed to the males three years old or more whose names were in the genealogical records(BE)—all who would enter the temple of the Lord to perform the daily duties of their various tasks, according to their responsibilities and their divisions. 17 And they distributed to the priests enrolled by their families in the genealogical records and likewise to the Levites twenty years old or more, according to their responsibilities and their divisions. 18 They included all the little ones, the wives, and the sons and daughters of the whole community listed in these genealogical records. For they were faithful in consecrating themselves.

19 As for the priests, the descendants of Aaron, who lived on the farmlands around their towns or in any other towns,(BF) men were designated by name to distribute portions to every male among them and to all who were recorded in the genealogies of the Levites.

20 This is what Hezekiah did throughout Judah, doing what was good and right and faithful(BG) before the Lord his God. 21 In everything that he undertook in the service of God’s temple and in obedience to the law and the commands, he sought his God and worked wholeheartedly. And so he prospered.(BH)

Romans 15:1-22

15 We who are strong ought to bear with the failings of the weak(A) and not to please ourselves. Each of us should please our neighbors for their good,(B) to build them up.(C) For even Christ did not please himself(D) but, as it is written: “The insults of those who insult you have fallen on me.”[a](E) For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us,(F) so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope.

May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you the same attitude of mind(G) toward each other that Christ Jesus had, so that with one mind and one voice you may glorify(H) the God and Father(I) of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Accept one another,(J) then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God. For I tell you that Christ has become a servant of the Jews[b](K) on behalf of God’s truth, so that the promises(L) made to the patriarchs might be confirmed and, moreover, that the Gentiles(M) might glorify God(N) for his mercy. As it is written:

“Therefore I will praise you among the Gentiles;
I will sing the praises of your name.”[c](O)

10 Again, it says,

“Rejoice, you Gentiles, with his people.”[d](P)

11 And again,

“Praise the Lord, all you Gentiles;
let all the peoples extol him.”[e](Q)

12 And again, Isaiah says,

“The Root of Jesse(R) will spring up,
one who will arise to rule over the nations;
in him the Gentiles will hope.”[f](S)

13 May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace(T) as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.(U)

Paul the Minister to the Gentiles

14 I myself am convinced, my brothers and sisters, that you yourselves are full of goodness,(V) filled with knowledge(W) and competent to instruct one another. 15 Yet I have written you quite boldly on some points to remind you of them again, because of the grace God gave me(X) 16 to be a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles.(Y) He gave me the priestly duty of proclaiming the gospel of God,(Z) so that the Gentiles might become an offering(AA) acceptable to God, sanctified by the Holy Spirit.

17 Therefore I glory in Christ Jesus(AB) in my service to God.(AC) 18 I will not venture to speak of anything except what Christ has accomplished through me in leading the Gentiles(AD) to obey God(AE) by what I have said and done— 19 by the power of signs and wonders,(AF) through the power of the Spirit of God.(AG) So from Jerusalem(AH) all the way around to Illyricum, I have fully proclaimed the gospel of Christ.(AI) 20 It has always been my ambition to preach the gospel(AJ) where Christ was not known, so that I would not be building on someone else’s foundation.(AK) 21 Rather, as it is written:

“Those who were not told about him will see,
and those who have not heard will understand.”[g](AL)

22 This is why I have often been hindered from coming to you.(AM)

Psalm 25:1-15

Psalm 25[a]

Of David.

In you, Lord my God,
I put my trust.(A)

I trust in you;(B)
do not let me be put to shame,
nor let my enemies triumph over me.
No one who hopes in you
will ever be put to shame,(C)
but shame will come on those
who are treacherous(D) without cause.

Show me your ways, Lord,
teach me your paths.(E)
Guide me in your truth(F) and teach me,
for you are God my Savior,(G)
and my hope is in you(H) all day long.
Remember, Lord, your great mercy and love,(I)
for they are from of old.
Do not remember the sins of my youth(J)
and my rebellious ways;(K)
according to your love(L) remember me,
for you, Lord, are good.(M)

Good and upright(N) is the Lord;
therefore he instructs(O) sinners in his ways.
He guides(P) the humble in what is right
and teaches them(Q) his way.
10 All the ways of the Lord are loving and faithful(R)
toward those who keep the demands of his covenant.(S)
11 For the sake of your name,(T) Lord,
forgive(U) my iniquity,(V) though it is great.

12 Who, then, are those who fear the Lord?(W)
He will instruct them in the ways(X) they should choose.[b]
13 They will spend their days in prosperity,(Y)
and their descendants will inherit the land.(Z)
14 The Lord confides(AA) in those who fear him;
he makes his covenant known(AB) to them.
15 My eyes are ever on the Lord,(AC)
for only he will release my feet from the snare.(AD)

2 Chronicles 26:1-28:27, Romans 13:1-14, Psalm 23:1-6, Proverbs 20:11

Today is the 30th day of July. Wow, one more day, we get to end a month as we start a new week tomorrow. One more day in this 7th month of the year. And so, we here are with today and tomorrow. And I’m excited to see what the scriptures bring into our lives, things for us to be edified by and uplifted by and challenged by. And so, let’s dive in. We’ve been reading from the Contemporary English Version this week. Which is what we’ll do today. And picking up where we left off yesterday we’ll lead us back into the book of 2nd Chronicles. Today, chapters 26, 27 and 28.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word. And we have now come to the full completion of this month, with only one day remaining. So, we look back over this month and we thank You for all that You have spoken into our lives, all that You have touched, all that You have comforted, all that You have challenged. And the way that You have led us forward, step-by-step, day-by-day. And so, come Holy Spirit and plant what we’ve read this month into the soil of our lives, that the fruit of this Spirit may burst forth in abundance, spilling out of us into the world. And we pray along with what the Apostle Paul said in the letter to the Romans. Jesus, may You be as near to us as the clothes we wear. And Holy Spirit, come, as we continue to contemplate and consider what life looks like if our posture were to live it as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to You. Come, Holy Spirit, into this we pray. In the precious and mighty name of Jesus we ask. Amen.

2 Chronicles 29:1-36, Romans 14:1-23, Psalms 24:1-10, Proverbs 20:12

Today is the 31st day of July welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I am Brian it is great to be here with you today as we take the next step forward together. And of course, this is the last day of the month of July, the seventh month of the year. And, so, well done. Seven months we’ve been together, and this last step will conclude this month and then we’ll just start a new month. That’s what we do, just keep going forward day by day step-by-step. But it’s good to be here with you at the end of this month of July. We are ending a month and starting a brand-new shiny sparkly week. And, so, something ends, and something begins, and we keep moving forward. This week we will read from the New International Version. We will also conclude the book of second Chronicles this week. We will also conclude Paul’s letter to the Romans this week. So, a lot of endings and a lot of new beginnings happening in the next week as we get settled into the new month of August. But here we are, last day of July. Let’s take the next step forward together. And that leads us back into second Chronicles. Today, second Chronicles chapter 29.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word and we…we are grateful. We appreciate. We sit here and appreciate that You have brought us to the final day of the seventh month of the year, that You have brought us this far. And there is plenty far to go, but You will bring us through. And, so, we are grateful in this moment of time. And as we move forward into this week and into a new month and ending books, and beginning new books, Holy Spirit come and lead us into all truth. This is a continual prayer. This is our desire. This is what we need, that You would lead and guide our steps and that You would illuminate in the Scriptures what we need to know to live this life according to Your purpose and according to Your will. Align our will with Your will so that we might be of one mind, collaborating, and putting things back together again. Come Holy Spirit we pray into all of this and we ask this in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hello DAB family Will Beverlin here from Strasburg Virginia. I’ve been listening for I think probably almost 10 years now. Multiple times calling in, multiple prayer requests have come in. My stepson was killed two years ago in an accident and called in for that. But there’s a gentleman on the 26th who called in about losing his friend to alcohol addiction. Well, I am in sympathy with you because I have just lost my father to the same thing just this past Sunday and he had taken several falls. He was 69 years old and for decades I had been trying to influence him to put down the alcohol and embrace his family. Last couple of years he went to a lake house he owns and isolated himself and just…where there was no accountability and essentially, he…he self-medicated himself to death, if you could put it that way. So, please prayers for the family. Going down right now to finish making the final arrangements for his final disposition if you will and from there, we’ll do memorial services and things like that for friends and family as they’re able to attend. So, please pray for the wisdom and strength of me that I can be a shining light for the gospel amongst my family and that…for traveling mercies and all the like. I thank you guys very much. I love this community. I am very faithful listening every day. So, thank you very much for everything. Goodbye.

Hi DAB family it’s Testimony in Progress in Northern Queens in the UK calling. I just…I just dropped off my stepdaughter at her friends and I just feel like I need to ask for prayers for her. Her name is Tia and she’s 22 years old and she’s suffering from fear of being on her own like, really bad. She’s always on the phone and she’s always on the FaceTime. She even sleeps with FaceTime with someone. She can’t just be on her own. And I was…and I was…probably because God’s knocking on her door now because I’ve been praying for her for years now. But she’s just…she’s just scared of being on her own. She always needs someone around. And I just think…I just think it’s really damaging her because she’s suffering now mentally and like she can’t work properly. She always has to call in sick because she’s struggling with mental health issues. And I just…I just really don’t want her to suffer like that. Can you please pray for her? Thank you.

Hello DAB family this is Jared from Ohio. I’ve been trying to figure out whether or not to call in but I mean things are going really good for me, but I’ve got some craziness going on too and I’m super excited to hear from Jonathan in Denver and don't…don’t give up because it sounds like you moving in the right direction. I’ve been praying for you for a while now even since the middle of last year. But I got a lot of transition going on in my life right now. So, if you would pray for me and my family and my church. We are looking for a new pastor because God has called our senior minister to a…to a new ministry and I know he’s going to do great things. So, but it’s a…it’s a hard transition for me. And just about 5 minutes ago there’s been an explosion on the other side of work. And, so, I wanted you guys to pray for that situation. And I don’t even know what all is going on with it but…but I know you guys are so generous in the prayers and just the ability to to love on people and to…and to share your concern and to share God’s love with people. So, I just appreciate that about this community, and I thank you so much. And Travis you’ve been on my heart too. Just I…I…I see her passion. I hear your love and wanting to do things in God’s way and I'm…and I’m praying that that you can accomplish that. So, I know I’m rambling about 5,000,000 different things but I…I appreciate this and just the opportunity to be able to call.

Hi Brian, this is Cory in Green Bay Wisconsin and I wanted to thank you for…for 10 years of your podcast, I’ve been listening to it. I started listening to it when I was living in Scottsdale about 10 years ago and I was going through a painful opiate painkiller addiction and I was brought into rehab and I came across your podcast. And after about eight or nine months I decided to become a Christian and I got baptized in Scottsdale. And I actually met you. You were out in that area about 10 years ago when I met you and your family. It was very pleasant. Now I’m living in a Green Bay and I’m having another very difficult time. I lost my job and I’m a little concerned, a little bit nervous but I feel confident every day when I…I listen to your podcast and the community of prayer that you offer for everybody. And I want to thank you and I want to ask your community to pray for me and help me get through this…this current crisis I have here. Thank you Daily.

2 Chronicles 29

Hezekiah Purifies the Temple(A)

29 Hezekiah(B) was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem twenty-nine years. His mother’s name was Abijah daughter of Zechariah. He did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, just as his father David(C) had done.

In the first month of the first year of his reign, he opened the doors of the temple of the Lord and repaired(D) them. He brought in the priests and the Levites, assembled them in the square on the east side and said: “Listen to me, Levites! Consecrate(E) yourselves now and consecrate the temple of the Lord, the God of your ancestors. Remove all defilement from the sanctuary. Our parents(F) were unfaithful;(G) they did evil in the eyes of the Lord our God and forsook him. They turned their faces away from the Lord’s dwelling place and turned their backs on him. They also shut the doors of the portico and put out the lamps. They did not burn incense(H) or present any burnt offerings at the sanctuary to the God of Israel. Therefore, the anger of the Lord has fallen on Judah and Jerusalem; he has made them an object of dread and horror(I) and scorn,(J) as you can see with your own eyes. This is why our fathers have fallen by the sword and why our sons and daughters and our wives are in captivity.(K) 10 Now I intend to make a covenant(L) with the Lord, the God of Israel, so that his fierce anger(M) will turn away from us. 11 My sons, do not be negligent now, for the Lord has chosen you to stand before him and serve him,(N) to minister(O) before him and to burn incense.”

12 Then these Levites(P) set to work:

from the Kohathites,

Mahath son of Amasai and Joel son of Azariah;

from the Merarites,

Kish son of Abdi and Azariah son of Jehallelel;

from the Gershonites,

Joah son of Zimmah and Eden(Q) son of Joah;

13 from the descendants of Elizaphan,(R)

Shimri and Jeiel;

from the descendants of Asaph,(S)

Zechariah and Mattaniah;

14 from the descendants of Heman,

Jehiel and Shimei;

from the descendants of Jeduthun,

Shemaiah and Uzziel.

15 When they had assembled their fellow Levites and consecrated themselves, they went in to purify(T) the temple of the Lord, as the king had ordered, following the word of the Lord. 16 The priests went into the sanctuary of the Lord to purify it. They brought out to the courtyard of the Lord’s temple everything unclean that they found in the temple of the Lord. The Levites took it and carried it out to the Kidron Valley.(U) 17 They began the consecration on the first day of the first month, and by the eighth day of the month they reached the portico of the Lord. For eight more days they consecrated the temple of the Lord itself, finishing on the sixteenth day of the first month.

18 Then they went in to King Hezekiah and reported: “We have purified the entire temple of the Lord, the altar of burnt offering with all its utensils, and the table for setting out the consecrated bread, with all its articles. 19 We have prepared and consecrated all the articles(V) that King Ahaz removed in his unfaithfulness while he was king. They are now in front of the Lord’s altar.”

20 Early the next morning King Hezekiah gathered the city officials together and went up to the temple of the Lord. 21 They brought seven bulls, seven rams, seven male lambs and seven male goats(W) as a sin offering[a](X) for the kingdom, for the sanctuary and for Judah. The king commanded the priests, the descendants of Aaron, to offer these on the altar of the Lord. 22 So they slaughtered the bulls, and the priests took the blood and splashed it against the altar; next they slaughtered the rams and splashed their blood against the altar; then they slaughtered the lambs and splashed their blood(Y) against the altar. 23 The goats(Z) for the sin offering were brought before the king and the assembly, and they laid their hands(AA) on them. 24 The priests then slaughtered the goats and presented their blood on the altar for a sin offering to atone(AB) for all Israel, because the king had ordered the burnt offering and the sin offering for all Israel.(AC)

25 He stationed the Levites in the temple of the Lord with cymbals, harps and lyres in the way prescribed by David(AD) and Gad(AE) the king’s seer and Nathan the prophet; this was commanded by the Lord through his prophets. 26 So the Levites stood ready with David’s instruments,(AF) and the priests with their trumpets.(AG)

27 Hezekiah gave the order to sacrifice the burnt offering on the altar. As the offering began, singing to the Lord began also, accompanied by trumpets and the instruments(AH) of David king of Israel. 28 The whole assembly bowed in worship, while the musicians played and the trumpets sounded. All this continued until the sacrifice of the burnt offering(AI) was completed.

29 When the offerings were finished, the king and everyone present with him knelt down and worshiped.(AJ) 30 King Hezekiah and his officials ordered the Levites to praise the Lord with the words of David and of Asaph the seer. So they sang praises with gladness and bowed down and worshiped.

31 Then Hezekiah said, “You have now dedicated yourselves to the Lord. Come and bring sacrifices(AK) and thank offerings to the temple of the Lord.” So the assembly brought sacrifices and thank offerings, and all whose hearts were willing(AL) brought burnt offerings.

32 The number of burnt offerings(AM) the assembly brought was seventy bulls, a hundred rams and two hundred male lambs—all of them for burnt offerings to the Lord. 33 The animals consecrated as sacrifices amounted to six hundred bulls and three thousand sheep and goats. 34 The priests, however, were too few to skin all the burnt offerings;(AN) so their relatives the Levites helped them until the task was finished and until other priests had been consecrated,(AO) for the Levites had been more conscientious in consecrating themselves than the priests had been. 35 There were burnt offerings in abundance, together with the fat(AP) of the fellowship offerings(AQ) and the drink offerings(AR) that accompanied the burnt offerings.

So the service of the temple of the Lord was reestablished. 36 Hezekiah and all the people rejoiced at what God had brought about for his people, because it was done so quickly.(AS)

Romans 14

The Weak and the Strong

14 Accept the one whose faith is weak,(A) without quarreling over disputable matters. One person’s faith allows them to eat anything, but another, whose faith is weak, eats only vegetables.(B) The one who eats everything must not treat with contempt(C) the one who does not, and the one who does not eat everything must not judge(D) the one who does, for God has accepted them. Who are you to judge someone else’s servant?(E) To their own master, servants stand or fall. And they will stand, for the Lord is able to make them stand.

One person considers one day more sacred than another;(F) another considers every day alike. Each of them should be fully convinced in their own mind. Whoever regards one day as special does so to the Lord. Whoever eats meat does so to the Lord, for they give thanks to God;(G) and whoever abstains does so to the Lord and gives thanks to God. For none of us lives for ourselves alone,(H) and none of us dies for ourselves alone. If we live, we live for the Lord; and if we die, we die for the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord.(I) For this very reason, Christ died and returned to life(J) so that he might be the Lord of both the dead and the living.(K)

10 You, then, why do you judge your brother or sister[a]? Or why do you treat them with contempt?(L) For we will all stand before God’s judgment seat.(M) 11 It is written:

“‘As surely as I live,’(N) says the Lord,
‘every knee will bow before me;
every tongue will acknowledge God.’”[b](O)

12 So then, each of us will give an account of ourselves to God.(P)

13 Therefore let us stop passing judgment(Q) on one another. Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in the way of a brother or sister.(R) 14 I am convinced, being fully persuaded in the Lord Jesus, that nothing is unclean in itself.(S) But if anyone regards something as unclean, then for that person it is unclean.(T) 15 If your brother or sister is distressed because of what you eat, you are no longer acting in love.(U) Do not by your eating destroy someone for whom Christ died.(V) 16 Therefore do not let what you know is good be spoken of as evil.(W) 17 For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking,(X) but of righteousness, peace(Y) and joy in the Holy Spirit,(Z) 18 because anyone who serves Christ in this way is pleasing to God and receives human approval.(AA)

19 Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace(AB) and to mutual edification.(AC) 20 Do not destroy the work of God for the sake of food.(AD) All food is clean,(AE) but it is wrong for a person to eat anything that causes someone else to stumble.(AF) 21 It is better not to eat meat or drink wine or to do anything else that will cause your brother or sister to fall.(AG)

22 So whatever you believe about these things keep between yourself and God. Blessed is the one who does not condemn(AH) himself by what he approves. 23 But whoever has doubts(AI) is condemned if they eat, because their eating is not from faith; and everything that does not come from faith is sin.[c]

Psalm 24

Psalm 24

Of David. A psalm.

The earth is the Lord’s,(A) and everything in it,
the world, and all who live in it;(B)
for he founded it on the seas
and established it on the waters.(C)

Who may ascend the mountain(D) of the Lord?
Who may stand in his holy place?(E)
The one who has clean hands(F) and a pure heart,(G)
who does not trust in an idol(H)
or swear by a false god.[a]

They will receive blessing(I) from the Lord
and vindication(J) from God their Savior.
Such is the generation of those who seek him,
who seek your face,(K) God of Jacob.[b][c]

Lift up your heads, you gates;(L)
be lifted up, you ancient doors,
that the King(M) of glory(N) may come in.(O)
Who is this King of glory?
The Lord strong and mighty,(P)
the Lord mighty in battle.(Q)
Lift up your heads, you gates;

2 Chronicles 26-28

King Uzziah of Judah

(2 Kings 14.21,22; 15.1-7)

26 1-3 After the death of King Amaziah, the people of Judah crowned his son Uzziah[a] king, even though he was only 16 at the time. Uzziah ruled 52 years from Jerusalem, the hometown of his mother Jecoliah. During his rule, he recaptured and rebuilt the town of Elath.

He obeyed the Lord by doing right, as his father Amaziah had done. Zechariah was Uzziah's advisor and taught him to obey God. And so, as long as Zechariah was alive, Uzziah was faithful to God, and God made him successful.

While Uzziah was king, he started a war against the Philistines. He smashed the walls of the cities of Gath, Jabneh, and Ashdod, then rebuilt towns around Ashdod and in other parts of Philistia. God helped him defeat the Philistines, the Arabs living in Gur-Baal, and the Meunites. Even the Ammonites paid taxes to Uzziah. He became very powerful, and people who lived as far away as Egypt heard about him.

In Jerusalem, Uzziah built fortified towers at the Corner Gate, the Valley Gate, and the place where the city wall turned inward.[b] 10 He also built defense towers out in the desert.

He owned such a large herd of livestock in the western foothills and in the flatlands, that he had cisterns dug there to catch the rainwater. He loved farming, so he had crops and vineyards planted in the hill country wherever there was fertile soil, and he hired farmers to take care of them.

11 Uzziah's army was always ready for battle. Jeiel and Maaseiah were the officers who kept track of the number of soldiers, and these two men were under the command of Hananiah, one of Uzziah's officials. 12-13 There were 307,500 trained soldiers, all under the command of 2,600 clan leaders. These powerful troops protected the king against any enemy. 14 Uzziah supplied his army with shields, spears, helmets, armor, bows, and stones used for slinging. 15 Some of his skilled workers invented machines that could shoot arrows and sling large stones. Uzziah set these up in Jerusalem at his defense towers and at the corners of the city wall.

God helped Uzziah become more and more powerful, and he was famous all over the world.

Uzziah Becomes Too Proud

16 Uzziah became proud of his power, and this led to his downfall.

One day, Uzziah disobeyed the Lord his God by going into the temple and burning incense as an offering to him.[c] 17 Azariah the priest and 80 other brave priests followed Uzziah into the temple 18 (A) and said, “Your Majesty, this isn't right! You are not allowed to burn incense to the Lord. That must be done only by priests who are descendants of Aaron. You will have to leave! You have sinned against the Lord, and so he will no longer bless you.”

19 Uzziah, who was standing next to the incense altar at the time, was holding the incense burner, ready to offer incense to the Lord. He became very angry when he heard Azariah's warning, and leprosy[d] suddenly appeared on his forehead! 20 Azariah and the other priests saw it and immediately told him to leave the temple. Uzziah realized that the Lord had punished him, so he hurried to get outside.

21 Uzziah had leprosy the rest of his life. He was no longer allowed in the temple or in his own palace. That's why his son Jotham lived there and ruled in his place.

22 Everything else Uzziah did while he was king is in the records written by the prophet Isaiah son of Amoz. 23 (B) Since Uzziah had leprosy, he could not be buried in the royal tombs. Instead, he was buried in a nearby cemetery that the kings owned. His son Jotham then became king.

King Jotham of Judah

(2 Kings 15.32-38)

27 Jotham was 25 years old when he became king of Judah, and he ruled from Jerusalem for 16 years. Jerushah his mother was the daughter of Zadok.

Jotham obeyed the Lord and did right. He followed the example of his father Uzziah, except he never burned incense in the temple as his father had done. But the people of Judah kept sinning against the Lord.

Jotham rebuilt the Upper Gate of the temple and did a lot of work to repair the wall near Mount Ophel. He built towns in the mountains of Judah and built fortresses and defense towers in the forests.

During his rule he attacked and defeated the Ammonites. Then every year for the next three years, he forced them to pay 3.4 tons of silver, 1,000 tons of wheat, and 1,000 tons of barley.

Jotham remained faithful to the Lord his God and became a very powerful king.

Everything else Jotham did while he was king, including the wars he fought, is written in The History of the Kings of Israel and Judah. After he had ruled Judah 16 years, he died at the age of 41. He was buried in Jerusalem, and his son Ahaz became king.

King Ahaz of Judah

(2 Kings 16.1-4)

28 Ahaz was 20 years old when he became king of Judah, and he ruled from Jerusalem for 16 years.

Ahaz was nothing like his ancestor David. Ahaz disobeyed the Lord and was as sinful as the kings of Israel. He made idols of the god Baal, and he offered sacrifices in Hinnom Valley. Worst of all, Ahaz sacrificed his own sons, which was a disgusting custom of the nations that the Lord had forced out of Israel. Ahaz offered sacrifices at the local shrines,[e] as well as on every hill and in the shade of large trees.

Syria and Israel Attack Judah

(2 Kings 16.5,6)

5-6 (C) Ahaz and the people of Judah sinned and turned away from the Lord, the God their ancestors had worshiped. So the Lord punished them by letting their enemies defeat them.

The king of Syria attacked Judah and took many of its people to Damascus as prisoners. King Pekah[f] of Israel later defeated Judah and killed 120,000 of its bravest soldiers in one day. During that battle, an Israelite soldier named Zichri killed three men from Judah: Maaseiah the king's son; Azrikam, the official in charge of the palace; and Elkanah, the king's second in command. The Israelite troops captured 200,000 women and children and took them back to their capital city of Samaria, along with a large amount of their possessions. They did these things even though the people of Judah were their own relatives.

Oded the Prophet Condemns Israel

Oded lived in Samaria and was one of the Lord's prophets. He met Israel's army on their way back from Judah and said to them:

The Lord God of your ancestors let you defeat Judah's army only because he was angry with them. But you should not have been so cruel! 10 If you make slaves of the people of Judah and Jerusalem, you will be as guilty as they are of sinning against the Lord.

11 Send these prisoners back home—they are your own relatives. If you don't, the Lord will punish you in his anger.

12 About the same time, four of Israel's leaders arrived. They were Azariah son of Johanan, Berechiah son of Meshillemoth, Jehizkiah son of Shallum, and Amasa son of Hadlai. They agreed with Oded that the Israelite troops were wrong, 13 and they said:

If you bring these prisoners into Samaria, that will be one more thing we've done to sin against the Lord. And he is already angry enough with us.

14 So in front of the leaders and the crowd, the troops handed over their prisoners and the property they had taken from Judah. 15 The four leaders took some of the stolen clothes and gave them to the prisoners who needed something to wear. They later gave them all a new change of clothes and shoes, then fixed them something to eat and drink, and cleaned their wounds with olive oil. They gave donkeys to those who were too weak to walk, and led all of them back to Jericho, the city known for its palm trees. The leaders then returned to Samaria.

Ahaz Asks the King of Assyria for Help

(2 Kings 16.7-9)

16-18 Some time later, the Edomites attacked the eastern part of Judah again and carried away prisoners. And at the same time, the Philistines raided towns in the western foothills and in the Southern Desert. They conquered the towns of Beth-Shemesh, Aijalon, Gederoth, Soco, Timnah, and Gimzo, including the villages around them. Then some of the Philistines went to live in these places.

Ahaz sent a message to King Tiglath Pileser of Assyria and begged for help. 19 But God was punishing Judah with these disasters, because Ahaz had disobeyed him and refused to stop Judah from sinning. 20 So Tiglath Pileser came to Judah, but instead of helping, he made things worse. 21 Ahaz gave him gifts from the Lord's temple and the king's palace, as well as from the homes of Israel's other leaders. The Assyrian king still refused to help Ahaz.

The Final Sin of Ahaz and His Death

22 Even after all these terrible things happened to Ahaz, he sinned against the Lord even worse than before. 23 He said to himself, “The Syrian gods must have helped their kings defeat me. Maybe if I offer sacrifices to those gods, they will help me.” That was the sin that finally led to the downfall of Ahaz, as well as to the destruction of Judah.

24 Ahaz collected all the furnishings of the temple and smashed them to pieces. Then he locked the doors to the temple and set up altars to foreign gods on every street corner in Jerusalem. 25 In every city and town in Judah he built local shrines[g] to worship foreign gods. All of this made the Lord God of his ancestors very angry.

26 Everything else Ahaz did while he was king is written in The History of the Kings of Judah and Israel. 27 (D) Ahaz died and was buried in Jerusalem, but not in the royal tombs. His son Hezekiah then became king.

Footnotes:

  1. 26.1-3 Uzziah: In the parallel passages in 2 Kings, he is called “Azariah” (see also 1 Chronicles 3.10-15). He is also called “Uzziah” in 2 Kings 15.13; Isaiah 1.1; Hosea 1.1; and Amos 1.1. One of these names was probably his birth name, while the other was his name after he became king.
  2. 26.9 the place where the city wall turned inward: One possible meaning for the difficult Hebrew text.
  3. 26.16 going into the temple and burning incense as an offering to him: This was to be done only by priests (see Exodus 30.1-10; Numbers 16.39,40).
  4. 26.19 leprosy: The word translated “leprosy” was used for many different kinds of skin diseases.
  5. 28.4 local shrines: See the note at 11.15.
  6. 28.5,6 Pekah: Hebrew “Pekah son of Remaliah.”
  7. 28.25 local shrines: See the note at 11.15.

Romans 13

Obey Rulers

13 (A) Obey the rulers who have authority over you. Only God can give authority to anyone, and he puts these rulers in their places of power. People who oppose the authorities are opposing what God has done, and they will be punished. Rulers are a threat to evil people, not to good people. There is no need to be afraid of the authorities. Just do right, and they will praise you for it. After all, they are God's servants, and it is their duty to help you.

If you do something wrong, you ought to be afraid, because these rulers have the right to punish you. They are God's servants who punish criminals to show how angry God is. But you should obey the rulers because you know it is the right thing to do, and not just because of God's anger.

(B) You must also pay your taxes. The authorities are God's servants, and it is their duty to take care of these matters. Pay all that you owe, whether it is taxes and fees or respect and honor.

Love

Let love be your only debt! If you love others, you have done all that the Law demands. (C) In the Law there are many commands, such as, “Be faithful in marriage. Do not murder. Do not steal. Do not want what belongs to others.” But all of these are summed up in the command that says, “Love others as much as you love yourself.” 10 No one who loves others will harm them. So love is all that the Law demands.

The Day When Christ Returns

11 You know what sort of times we live in, and so you should live properly. It is time to wake up. You know that the day when we will be saved is nearer now than when we first put our faith in the Lord. 12 Night is almost over, and day will soon appear. We must stop behaving as people do in the dark and be ready to live in the light. 13 So behave properly, as people do in the day. Don't go to wild parties or get drunk or be vulgar or indecent. Don't quarrel or be jealous. 14 Let the Lord Jesus Christ be as near to you as the clothes you wear. Then you won't try to satisfy your selfish desires.

Psalm 23

(A psalm by David.)

The Good Shepherd

You, Lord, are my shepherd.
I will never be in need.
(A) You let me rest in fields
of green grass.
You lead me to streams
of peaceful water,
and you refresh my life.

You are true to your name,
and you lead me
along the right paths.
I may walk through valleys
as dark as death,
but I won't be afraid.
You are with me,
and your shepherd's rod[a]
makes me feel safe.

You treat me to a feast,
while my enemies watch.
You honor me as your guest,
and you fill my cup
until it overflows.
Your kindness and love
will always be with me
each day of my life,
and I will live forever
in your house, Lord.

Footnotes:

  1. 23.4 shepherd's rod: The Hebrew text mentions two objects carried by the shepherd: a club to defend against wild animals and a long pole to guide and control the sheep.

2 Chronicles 24:1-25:28, Romans 12:1-21, Psalms 22:19-31, Proverbs 20:8-10

Today is the 29th day of July welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I am Brian and it is wonderful to gather, come around the Global Campfire together, take the next step forward together and just be together as we move forward through this year. So, we have come together to take the next step forward in the Scriptures, and that next step forward is, of course, the next one after where we left off. And,so, we will go back into the book of second Chronicles and today read chapters 24 and 25.

Commentary:

Okay. What is the most sensible way to serve God? That is kind of an undercurrent question that sort of flows through my life. Like am I doing it right? How do you know if you’re doing it right? Where do you aim? How does this work. What is the most sensible way to do this? Paul takes a stab at actually answering that and going back to Romans 12 and really spending some time with it ourselves will be really really helpful because it’s kind of laid out. Paul says, “to offer your bodies to him as a living sacrifice, pure and pleasing, that’s the most sensible way to serve God.” And, so, for starters what does that even look like. From the perspective of Paul’s readers sacrifice is not an unusual concept. They’re very very familiar with animal sacrifice. And, so, understanding what a sacrifice is and what happens with a sacrifice is pretty clear to them. What Paul is suggesting is that they look at themselves that way, as a sacrifice, but as a living one. And, so, to practically look at this we understand that a sacrifice dies and yet a living sacrifice lives sacrificially. According to Paul this posture is the most sensible way to serve God. And, so, we shouldn’t blow by it. But Paul has a bunch of other things to say in the 12th chapter of Romans about what this looks like. For example, “don’t think you’re better than you really are" or “use good sense and measure yourself by the amount of faith that God is giving you” or “if you have gifting’s use them” or “in sincerity love one another.” Like, don’t fake love each other. Be sincere in your love for others. “Hate what is evil. Hold on to what is good. Love each other as brothers and sisters, and honor others more than you do yourself. Never give up. Eagerly follow the Holy Spirit and serve the Lord. Let your hope make you glad. Be patient in time of trouble and never stop praying. Take care of God’s needy people and welcome strangers into your home. Ask God to bless everyone who mistreats you. Ask him to bless them and not to curse them. When others are happy be happy. When they’re sad, be sad with them. Be friendly, be hospitable with everyone. Don’t be proud and feel that you know more than others. Be friends with ordinary people. Try to earn the respect of others and do your best to live at peace with everybody. Don’t try to get even. Let God take care that. Revenge is the Lords. Don’t let evil defeat you but defeat evil with good.” These are all characteristics or postures of what it looks like to obey and be a living sacrifice before the Lord, and it’s worth kind of winding back and listening to this again or opening up the Bible and going to the 12th chapter of Romans, and just really pondering. Because we ponder some of these things and say, okay I feel as if I’m doing that with all of my heart, but this other thing is a real stronghold that gets me into trouble all of the time. Hind of moving through some of these characteristics allows us to see where there is work to be done and allows us to invite the Holy Spirit into that work as we live our lives as a living sacrifice. And, so, let’s spend some time here today contemplating meditating upon seeing how we may excel in one area, but really, really need to work on some other areas that are hurting people, or that we’re carrying around bitterness and won’t release people. And, so, we’re in bondage as well. There’s so much for us to think about today and as each one of us thinks about it it’s going to materialize in our lives different. Differently because we have different stories and different relationships, different occupations, different everything. But it will mean something to each one of us as we invite the Holy Spirit to give us clarity on what it looks like to live our lives as a living sacrifice.

Prayer:

Holy Spirit, we invite You into that. We need You here. We need You now. As we are contemplating these things reveal to us the places where we can be encouraged and need encouragement, reveal to us the places in which we need to focus and allow repentance to change us. Holy Spirit come into this, all of it. Transform us. Lead us into all truth. Lead us deeper into Jesus. And we pray this in His precious and holy name. Amen.

[singing starts] Happy birthday to ya. Happy birthday to ya. Happy birthday. Happy birthday to ya [inging stops]. Happy birthday Ezekiel. Oh my gosh brother. Dude you’re a decade. You’re getting old man. But with age comes wisdom. Man, you know what, I got a quick story to share with you Ezekiel. 10 years ago, your father was in the parking lot of the hospital asking us to pray because Jill was having some complications with your birth. And I remember falling to my knees and asking God to bless this birth but not only the birth to bless your life. May you always follow the Lord’s path Ezekiel. May you never stray from it. May all your days be blessed. And may you always stay in God’s word brother. Man, you encourage me so much. You have no idea. You’re little short 10 years on this earth has made such an impact on so many people brother. I said I wasn’t going to cry but you already know I’m a crier. Oh try it it’s detoxing. Anyway, brother I love you. Ezekiel you’re like my little nephew. I’ve been rolling with your dad for a long time and brother you just keep on rolling man. Keep doing what you’re doing. Happy birthday. Happy birthday.

Good morning everybody this is Joyfully Joe. It’s July 25th and I was just listening to my Daily Audio Bible. As a matter of fact, I listened to your exposition Brian I don’t know about four or five times. It was so beautiful to me, such a comfort. I love that passage of scripture. And right now in my life I am just seeking to praise God for his word, seeking to pour into myself God word because I’m in a really hard spot with my mom. I know I’ve told you guys this before. I hope you’re praying for me because I need it. She says…in her dementia she says really mean things to me. And I’m not crying about that because I’m on that road of forgiveness. And Hallelujah Jeremy, I’m just praising God for your good road that you went on. And but anyways this is my life right now. I love the way this psalm ends. Everything about it that you read and exposed Brian just hit my heart so beautifully and I thank you for it. Let my words and my thoughts be pleasing to you because you are my mighty rock and my protector. So beautiful. And I just pray DABbers that…or I ask you to pray for me that my words would be pleasing and kind to my mother regardless. In Jesus…

Hello Daily Audio Bible I’m just asking…I’m reaching out for some prayer regarding my child __.  Apparently, my child’s mother boyfriend who is raising my daughters and will not me see them and it’s just causing it's…it's…it’s causing lots of stress and pain and I chose to want to have the right attitude towards this young man who is…who is being the father for my kids. Just something I can’t do anything about at that moment. It’s in the courts but I need…need God to give me peace, to give me the right heart as I’m going towards anger and bitterness and that doesn’t help anything. So, I just pray that God will give me peace in the midst of this and also my relationship with my father. Sometimes I blame my father for a lot of things in my life and I just wanna have a good attitude and a good relationship with my father. I’m trying to move on in God’s will and this thing is like a dark cloud over my life and I just want peace. I want peace. Thank you, community. Thank you for your prayers.

Hi DABbers. So, this is __ from Ohio currently and a lady just called in and I was so encouraged. I’m so sorry I did not get your name, but you were talking about your three boys. And you said that God said, what if you just acted like your day was perfect, that your life was perfect? How would you act? In when she said that my spirit leapt. I am not kidding. I was like wow! And, you know, that’s called joy. Is that a revelation? It is for me. Wow! So, I just thank you for that dear sister. And wow has my whole perspective just shifted. Wow! I am full of joy. Things…things are perfect in the Lord. So, we just thank you God in Yeshua’s name. And then right after that…and man I didn’t get your name either. So sorry. But a man called and he’s singing I exalt thee. And I was like wow, I just feel so full of the spirit right now. That’s so awesome. And, so, I just want to say hi. I’m so encouraged. You know I don’t know if I can do any more encouraging but that really encouraged me those back-to-back messages. So, have a great day DABbers and be strong and encouraged in the Lord. Yeah…in Yeshua’s name. Amen.

This is Jersey Jane for Jesus. I was listening to the July 26th and heard Nate…I believe his name is Nate…call in for the first time. He’s fairly new to listening as I am. I only started in January. He was asking for prayer for his boss who fell off a roof and was in critical condition with broken ribs, spinal cord injury, other injuries. And Nate, I lift your boss and his family into the arms of Jesus, that Jesus blood will cover your boss and his family, will help to heal him, will give him the opportunity to have great faith and love. I just feel very badly for him because one moment he was well and working and the next, that split second where we can collapse. But our faith gets us through. Jesus is there. Hold onto His hand and His love. Have your faith. And Nate, I lift you up for asking for prayer for Him. And for all the DABbers, all of all of whom are there for other people, people they don’t know…
