Ezra 7:1-8:20

Ezra’s Arrival

After these events, during the reign of King Artaxerxes(A) of Persia, Ezra—

Seraiah’s(B) son, Azariah’s son,

Hilkiah’s(C) son, Shallum’s son,

Zadok’s(D) son, Ahitub’s son,

Amariah’s son, Azariah’s son,

Meraioth’s son, Zerahiah’s son,

Uzzi’s son, Bukki’s son,

Abishua’s son, Phinehas’s son,

Eleazar’s son, the chief priest Aaron’s son(E)

—came up from Babylon. He was a scribe skilled in the law of Moses,(F) which the Lord, the God of Israel, had given. The king had granted him everything he requested(G) because the hand of the Lord his God was on him.(H) Some of the Israelites, priests, Levites, singers, gatekeepers, and temple servants(I) accompanied him to Jerusalem in the seventh year of King Artaxerxes.

Ezra[a] came to Jerusalem in the fifth month, during the seventh year of the king. He began the journey from Babylon on the first day of the first month(J) and arrived in Jerusalem on the first day of the fifth month(K) since the gracious hand of his God was on him.(L) 10 Now Ezra had determined in his heart to study the law of the Lord, obey it, and teach(M) its statutes and ordinances in Israel.

Letter from Artaxerxes

11 This is the text of the letter King Artaxerxes gave to Ezra the priest and scribe, an expert in matters of the Lord’s commands and statutes for Israel:[b]

12 Artaxerxes, king of kings,(N) to Ezra the priest, an expert in the law of the God of the heavens:

Greetings.

13 I issue a decree that any of the Israelites in my kingdom, including their priests and Levites, who want to go to Jerusalem, may go with you.(O) 14 You are sent by the king and his seven counselors(P) to evaluate Judah and Jerusalem according to the law of your God, which is in your possession. 15 You are also to bring the silver and gold the king and his counselors have willingly given to the God of Israel,(Q) whose dwelling is in Jerusalem,(R) 16 and all the silver and gold you receive throughout the province of Babylon, together with the freewill offerings given by the people and the priests to the house of their God in Jerusalem.(S) 17 Then you are to be diligent to buy with this money bulls, rams, and lambs, along with their grain and drink offerings, and offer them on the altar at the house of your God in Jerusalem.(T) 18 You may do whatever seems best to you and your brothers with the rest of the silver and gold, according to the will of your God. 19 Deliver to the God of Jerusalem all the articles given to you for the service of the house of your God.(U) 20 You may use the royal treasury[c] to pay for anything else needed for the house of your God.(V)

21 I, King Artaxerxes, issue a decree to all the treasurers in the region west of the Euphrates River:(W)

Whatever Ezra the priest, an expert in the law of the God of the heavens, asks of you must be provided in full,(X) 22 up to 7,500 pounds[d] of silver, 500 bushels[e] of wheat, 550 gallons[f] of wine, 550 gallons of oil, and salt without limit.[g] 23 Whatever is commanded by the God of the heavens must be done diligently for the house of the God of the heavens, so that wrath will not fall on the realm of the king and his sons.(Y) 24 Be advised that you do not have authority to impose tribute, duty, and land tax on any priests, Levites, singers, doorkeepers, temple servants, or other servants of this house of God.

25 And you, Ezra, according to[h] God’s wisdom that you possess, appoint magistrates and judges to judge all the people in the region west of the Euphrates who know the laws of your God and to teach anyone who does not know them.(Z) 26 Anyone who does not keep the law of your God and the law of the king, let the appropriate judgment be executed against him, whether death, banishment, confiscation of property, or imprisonment.(AA)

27 Blessed be the Lord, the God of our ancestors, who has put it into the king’s mind(AB) to glorify the house of the Lord in Jerusalem,(AC) 28 and who has shown favor to me before the king,(AD) his counselors, and all his powerful officers. So I took courage because I was strengthened by the hand of the Lord my God,[i](AE) and I gathered Israelite leaders to return with me.(AF)

1 Corinthians 4

The Faithful Manager

A person should think of us in this way: as servants(A) of Christ and managers(B) of the mysteries of God.(C) In this regard, it is required that managers be found faithful.(D) It is of little(E) importance to me that I should be judged(F) by you or by any human court.[a] In fact, I don’t even judge myself. For I am not conscious of anything against myself, but I am not justified(G) by this. It is the Lord who judges me. So don’t judge(H) anything prematurely, before the Lord comes,(I) who will both bring to light what is hidden in darkness and reveal the intentions of the hearts. And then praise will come to each one from God.(J)

The Apostles’ Example of Humility

Now, brothers and sisters,(K) I have applied these things to myself and Apollos(L) for your benefit, so that you may learn from us the meaning of the saying: “Nothing beyond what is written.” The purpose is that none of you will be arrogant, favoring one person over another. For who makes you so superior? What do you have that you didn’t receive? If, in fact, you did receive it, why do you boast as if you hadn’t received it? You are already full! You are already rich! You have begun to reign as kings without us—and I wish you did reign, so that we could also reign with you! For I think God has displayed us, the apostles, in last place, like men condemned to die: We have become a spectacle to the world, both to angels and to people. 10 We are fools for Christ, but you are wise in Christ!(M) We are weak, but you are strong! You are distinguished, but we are dishonored! 11 Up to the present hour we are both hungry and thirsty; we are poorly clothed, roughly treated, homeless; 12 we labor, working(N) with our own hands.(O) When we are reviled, we bless; when we are persecuted, we endure it; 13 when we are slandered, we respond graciously. Even now, we are like the scum of the earth, like everyone’s garbage.(P)

Paul’s Fatherly Care

14 I’m not writing this to shame you, but to warn you as my dear children.(Q) 15 For you may have countless instructors in Christ, but you don’t have many fathers. For I became your father(R) in Christ Jesus through the gospel. 16 Therefore I urge you to imitate me. 17 This is why I have sent(S) Timothy to you. He is my dearly loved and faithful(T) child in the Lord. He will remind you about my ways in Christ Jesus, just as I teach everywhere in every church.

18 Now some are arrogant, as though I were not coming to you. 19 But I will come to you soon,(U) if the Lord wills, and I will find out not the talk, but the power of those who are arrogant. 20 For the kingdom of God is not a matter of talk but of power. 21 What do you want? Should I come to you with a rod,(V) or in love and a spirit of gentleness?(W)

Psalm 30

Psalm 30

Joy in the Morning

A psalm; a dedication song for the house. Of David.

I will exalt you, Lord,
because you have lifted me up(A)
and have not allowed my enemies
to triumph over me.(B)
Lord my God,
I cried to you for help, and you healed me.(C)
Lord, you brought me up from Sheol;(D)
you spared me from among those
going down[a] to the Pit.(E)

Sing to the Lord, you his faithful ones,
and praise his holy name.(F)
For his anger lasts only a moment,
but his favor, a lifetime.
Weeping may stay overnight,
but there is joy in the morning.(G)

When I was secure, I said,
“I will never be shaken.”(H)
Lord, when you showed your favor,
you made me stand like a strong mountain;(I)
when you hid your face, I was terrified.(J)
Lord, I called to you;
I sought favor from my Lord:(K)
“What gain is there in my death,
if I go down to the Pit?
Will the dust praise you?
Will it proclaim your truth?(L)
10 Lord, listen and be gracious to me;
Lord, be my helper.”(M)

11 You turned my lament into dancing;
you removed my sackcloth
and clothed me with gladness,(N)
12 so that I can sing to you and not be silent.
Lord my God, I will praise you forever.(O)

Ezra 4:24-6:22, 1 Corinthian 3:5-23, Psalm 29:1-11, Proverbs 20:26-27

Today is the seventh day of August, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian and it is fantastic to be here with you as we begin our work week, and as we gather to take the next step forward on our journey through the Scriptures this year. And our journey always leads us to where we left off. We left off yesterday in the book of Ezra, the returned exiles are rebuilding but they are facing quite a bit of opposition, and now the opposition is become political in nature and letters are being written to kings and at this point, the work has been commanded to stop. But let’s pick up the story, Ezra chapter 4 verse 24 through 6 verse 22 today.

Commentary:

Okay, in Ezra today we continue to watch the rebuilding take place. We went through all of this, we saw how exile happened, we saw the destruction of Jerusalem, and now the exiles are returning to rebuild, an entire generation has passed, and there were people that were moved into that land once the Israelites were cast out of the land, and they’ve been living there all this time. And so, this new group of people, who are like coming back to their homeland, are seen as new people coming into this this situation. So, it causes disruption and intimidation and all kinds of word battles and threats. And then it gets political, and letters are written all the way back to the emperor, until the emperor finally puts his foot down and says leave them alone and let them build. And not only let them build but supply them with what they need. And so now, the children of Israel can build freely, and we can look into this story and see a story of steadfast resoluteness to obey God and to finish what God had tasked them to do, regardless of the opposition. Which isn’t to say that the opposition wasn’t real. It was very real, the threats were real, the psychological dread that was upon the people because of the intimidation, that was real. The letters being written back and forth to the emperor, they were real. These were real things. But they ultimately did not allow those things to stop their own obedience to God. A lesson for all of us.

And then, we’re in first Corinthians now. And Paul is discussing an issue that’s happening in Corinth and that is that, that the congregation of people are dividing themselves into groups of people who swear their loyalty to a certain person. In this case, like one of the more popular preachers or teachers, so like some say, yeah, I follow Paul, other people say, yeah, I follow Apollos, other people say I follow Peter. And so, camps of people within the church are formed. And we should probably pay attention to this because this issue is a pervasive issue that still exists today. In fact, I would wager that the problem is worse now than when Paul is addressing it, and we have had instruction and counsel on this issue for 2000 years. To Paul’s way of thinking believers were getting a spiritual identity based on the team that they were on, rather than actually growing in intimacy with Jesus. Paul says it like this, “when one of you says, I follow Paul and another I follow Apollo’s, aren’t you acting like worldly people. After all, who is Apollos and who is Paul? We are simply God’s servants by whom you were led to believe. Each one of us does the work which the Lord gave him to do. I planted the seed, Apollos watered the plant, but it was God who made the plant grow. The one who plants and the one who waters really do not matter. It is God who matters because He makes the plant grow.” Since Paul said these things to the church in Corinth, millennia have passed and faith in Jesus Christ to spread throughout the entire earth, but we have tens of thousands of distinct denominations around ‘how to have faith in Jesus’ and the problem isn’t that we are vast and diverse and on all continents and in all cultural contexts, the problem starts to happen when we think that the team we’re on, that the community that we belong to is the one that has the truth that nobody else has. And so, we attempt to gain this spiritual identity through what our team believes, instead of having an always on, never off, ever evolving intimate relationship with Jesus Himself. Paul is trying to tell the Corinthians who were kinda dividing themselves into camps that it’s basically just a construct. We are all built on the same foundation, we’re on the same team, we’re in the same family. Paul says it like this, “surely you know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit lives in you. No one then, should boast about what human beings can do. Actually, everything belongs to you. Paul, Apollos, and Peter, this world, life and death, the present and the future, all these are yours and you belong to Christ, and Christ belongs to God.” And so, this leads us to consider our own spiritual identity. Where do we get that sense of identity? Is it the person or them movements that we follow, the church we attend, the pastor that we sit under? Or does our identity come from a first person relationship with Jesus. In other words, are we trying to have a relationship with God by proxy because of the people that we run with, or are we actually in a relationship with God for ourselves? And may we invite the Holy Spirit into that, as we consider it today.

Prayer:

And so, Holy Spirit, come into, into this. Where are we getting an identity, and when we look at these things, we see all of the interconnectedness, we see the deep need to belong and these are things that you have placed within us. They are good things, until we cultivate pride in that arrangement. Pride that gives us a sense of superiority in our belonging, over and against another brother and sister. And we try to get an identity, contrasting how, what our convictions are, versus theirs. And then divisions begin to happen on small scales and on very, very large scales. When the truth is, none of us deserve to be having the conversation at all. We are all so fortunate to be here at all. It is your grace and your kindness, your love and your mercy, that sustains us. All of us, even those who don’t share the exact same set of convictions that we do. We all need You the same. We all need you desperately. So, once again, we are invited to keep our eyes on You and not everybody else. Our identity flows from You and You have called us good, You have called us Your child. What other identity do we need. Open our eyes and we may see our brothers and sisters with the compassion and mercy, that You see them with. We pray this in Jesus name. Amen.

Prayer and Encouragements:

Hi, God bless you all. I can’t tell you how much I love all of you and I pray for you. I really do. This is a first for me. I haven’t called in and thank you to the Hardin’s, of course. And I pray for them as well. All of you. I’m just really, I’m really struggling. I can’t say this fast enough before the two minutes is up. My brother-in-law had three aneurisms. They were trying to help him and he ended up on life support for three weeks. I’ve lifted him in prayer and asked for prayer and so forth. And my sister, she sent me an email today. She says I’m agnostic and she said I’m agnostic, don’t push your Jesus, don’t talk to me, if you want anything to do with me, if you want to connect with me you lay off. And I haven’t responded yes but I cannot. I will not hide Jesus and if I need to say his name, or speak or whatever, I will. My family is not yet saved. They’re loved ones aren’t saved. I plead it for them. And then I just got the news that another sister is so desperately ill in ICU. She found out she had cancer and I just got the news she died and I’m asking you please pray for my family. Please pray for my son that’s chosen Islam over Christianity that he was raised in and he knew Jesus Christ. He is not a kid, he’s old enough to know better. Please, just pray.

Good morning DAB. This is Virgil in Texas. Cowboy for Christ. I pray for all of you often. I may not call in very much but I’m in the background praying. And today I have a prayer request for my sister, Nikina. She suffers from Parkinson and she’s going in the hospital for blood transfusion. I just pray to the Lord God that He will watch over her, heal her, comfort her, relieve her pain. And Lord, just strengthen her faith in You, that You will carry her through this. And if all of you people out there would please say a prayer for her. And it’s in Jesus name I pray. Amen.

Good morning DAB family. This is Be Filled Bridgette from New York City. And I’m hitting you guys up to ask you to please pray for me. I’ve been having a really rough few months in my marriage and just in general. Just please lift me in prayer. My daughter, the second person is going to trial September 5th. His name is Thomas. Please pray for him. Pray that he will be saved. Pray that he will give his life to the Lord. Pray that my daughter would be healed and that that this chapter of our lives would finally be closed and resolved. Pray for my husband who is really emotionally disconnected and doesn’t even recognize it. He doesn’t see his choices are impacting us. And it just kinda feels lonely. My 14-year-old, pray for her, that she would have a zeal for the Lord and for my son, who is sober a week now. Please pray that he would make Christ his all-and-all. And that he would stay sober. I love you guys. I’m praying for you. I thank you. And God bless you.

Hello, this is Linda, His Beloved in North Idaho. I’m calling regarding Brian speaking today on August 3rd regarding gossip, betrayal and a lack of sense of safety. Many people call in, mostly men, regarding their marriages and their wives wanting to divorce them or separate from them. I just want to know, want to say that it’s not just gossip, of course, that makes us feel betrayed and unsafe. Unfortunately, in our marriages to often, husbands do things that crush us as wives and it takes a long time to get over the betrayal and to feel safe. My husband, you have the ability to win your wife back. I want to encourage you to humble yourself in the side of the Lord and when He lifts you up, He will give you the wisdom, the knowledge, and the discernment and the courage to do the right thing in order to redeem your family. So please, humble yourself, be broken before the cross. Win back your beloved wife. Win back your family. Be a redeemed man. Make her and your family feel safe again. You can do it because Christ is in you. Thank you.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Monday August 7, 2023 (NIV)

Ezra 4:24-6:22

24 Then the work on God’s temple in Jerusalem was stopped. Nothing more was done until Darius’ second year as king of Persia.

Work Resumed on the Temple

The prophet Haggai and Zechariah, grandson of Iddo, prophesied to the Jews in Judah and Jerusalem in the name of Israel’s God, who was over them. Then Zerubbabel, who was Shealtiel’s son, and Jeshua, who was Jozadak’s son, began to rebuild God’s temple in Jerusalem. God’s prophets were with them and supported them.

At the same time, Governor Tattenai ⌞from the province⌟ west of the Euphrates River, Shethar Bozenai, and their group went to the Jews and asked them, “Who gave you permission to rebuild this temple and finish its walls?” They also asked the Jews for the names of the men who were working on this building.

But the leaders of the Jews were under God’s watchful eye. They couldn’t be stopped until Darius received a report and sent a reply to it.

Permission Requested from Darius

Here is a copy of the letter Governor Tattenai ⌞from the province⌟ west of the Euphrates River, Shethar Bozenai and his group (the Persians west of that river) sent to King Darius. They sent him the following report:

To King Darius,

We wish you peace and prosperity in everything you do.

Your Majesty should know that we went to the province of Judah, to the temple of the great God. The temple is being built with large stones and with wooden beams laid in its walls. The builders are doing an excellent job and making rapid progress. We asked their leaders the following question: “Who gave you permission to rebuild this temple and finish its walls?” 10 For your information, we also asked them for their names so that we would have a record of the men who were their leaders. 11 This was their reply to us:

“We are the servants of the God of heaven and earth. We are rebuilding the temple that was originally built many years ago by a great king of Israel. 12 But because our ancestors made the God of heaven angry, he handed them over to King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon (a Chaldean). So Nebuchadnezzar destroyed this temple and deported its people to Babylon.

13 “However, in the first year of the reign of King Cyrus of Babylon, Cyrus gave permission for God’s temple to be rebuilt. 14 In addition, Cyrus took out of a temple in Babylon the gold and silver utensils that belonged to God’s temple. (Nebuchadnezzar had taken them out of God’s temple in Jerusalem and brought them into a temple in Babylon.) Cyrus gave them to a man named Sheshbazzar, whom he had made governor. 15 Cyrus told him, ‘Take these utensils. Place them in the temple in Jerusalem. Rebuild God’s temple on its original site.’ 16 Then Sheshbazzar laid the foundation of God’s temple in Jerusalem. The temple has been under construction from that time until now, but it still isn’t finished.”

17 If it pleases Your Majesty, allow someone to search the king’s archives in Babylon to determine whether King Cyrus gave permission for the temple of God to be rebuilt in Jerusalem. Then please send us Your Majesty’s decision on this matter.

King Darius Finds King Cyrus’ Memorandum

Then King Darius gave the order to search the library where the archives were stored in Babylon. A scroll was found in the palace of Ecbatana, which is in the province of Media. This was written on it:

MEMORANDUM

Date: Cyrus’ first year as king

From: King Cyrus

Subject: God’s temple in Jerusalem

The temple should be rebuilt as a place to offer sacrifices. Its foundation should be laid. It should be 90 feet high and 90 feet wide with three rows of large stones and a row of wood. The king’s palace will pay for it. In addition, Cyrus took out of a temple in Babylon the gold and silver utensils that belonged to God’s temple. (Nebuchadnezzar had taken them out of God’s temple in Jerusalem and brought them into a temple in Babylon.) They should be returned to their proper place in the temple in Jerusalem. You should put each one in God’s temple.

Governor Tattenai ⌞from the province⌟ west of the Euphrates, Shethar Bozenai, and those of your group (the Persians west of the river):

You must stay away from there. Don’t interfere with the work on God’s temple. Let the governor of the Jews and the leaders of Judah rebuild God’s temple on its ⌞original⌟ foundation. I am issuing this decree about how you must help the Jewish leaders rebuild God’s temple:

The cost ⌞for this⌟ should be paid out of the king’s own money from the taxes ⌞on the province⌟ west of the Euphrates. Full payment should be made to these men so that the work is not interrupted. Also, whatever the priests in Jerusalem need for burnt offerings to the God of heaven—young bulls, rams, lambs, wheat, salt, wine, and olive oil—should be provided for them each day. Make sure that nothing is omitted. 10 Then they can offer sacrifices that please the God of heaven and pray for the life of the king and his sons.

11 I am also issuing a decree that if anyone tampers with my orders, that person should be impaled on a beam torn from his own house and his house should be turned into a pile of rubble. 12 May the God whose name is worshiped there cause the downfall of each king and nation who tries to tamper with my orders or tries to destroy the temple of the God in Jerusalem.

I, Darius, have issued a decree. It’s to be carried out exactly as ordered.

13 Then Governor Tattenai ⌞from the province⌟ west of the Euphrates River, Shethar Bozenai, and their group did exactly what King Darius had ordered. 14 So the Jewish leaders continued to make progress because of the message from the prophet Haggai and Zechariah, the grandson of Iddo. They finished building as the God of Israel had ordered and as Cyrus, Darius, and Artaxerxes (the kings of Persia) had ordered. 15 This temple was finished on the third day of the month of Adar in the sixth year of King Darius’ reign.

The Temple Is Completed and Dedicated

16 Then the people of Israel, the priests, the Levites, and the others who had returned from exile celebrated at the dedication of God’s temple. 17 At the dedication of God’s temple, they sacrificed 100 bulls, 200 rams, and 400 lambs. They sacrificed 12 male goats as an offering for sin, one goat for each of the tribes of Israel.

18 The priests were assigned to their divisions and the Levites to their groups ⌞to lead⌟ the worship of God in Jerusalem by following the directions written in the Book of Moses.

The Passover Is Celebrated

19 On the fourteenth day of the first month, those who had returned from exile celebrated the Passover. 20 Since the priests and Levites had cleansed themselves, all of them were ⌞now⌟ clean.[a] They killed the Passover lambs for all the people who had returned from exile, for the rest of the priests, and for themselves. 21 The lambs were eaten by the Israelites who had returned from exile and by all who had separated themselves from the unclean practices of the non-Jews in the land to worship the Lord God of Israel. 22 So for seven days they celebrated the Festival of Unleavened Bread because the Lord had made them joyful. The Lord had made the king of Assyria change his mind so that he supported the people in their work on the temple of God, the God of Israel.

1 Corinthians 3:5-23

Who is Apollos? Who is Paul? They are servants who helped you come to faith. Each did what the Lord gave him to do. I planted, and Apollos watered, but God made it grow. So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is important because ⌞only⌟ God makes it grow. The one who plants and the one who waters have the same goal, and each will receive a reward for his own work. We are God’s coworkers. You are God’s field.

You are God’s building. 10 As a skilled and experienced builder, I used the gift [a] that God gave me to lay the foundation ⌞for that building⌟. However, someone else is building on it. Each person must be careful how he builds on it. 11 After all, no one can lay any other foundation than the one that is already laid, and that foundation is Jesus Christ. 12 People may build on this foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, or straw. 13 The day will make what each one does clearly visible because fire will reveal it. That fire will determine what kind of work each person has done. 14 If what a person has built survives, he will receive a reward. 15 If his work is burned up, he will suffer ⌞the loss⌟. However, he will be saved, though it will be like going through a fire.

16 Don’t you know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit lives in you? 17 If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy him because God’s temple is holy. You are that holy temple!

18 Don’t deceive yourselves. If any of you think you are wise in the ways of this world, you should give up that wisdom in order to become really wise. 19 The wisdom of this world is nonsense in God’s sight. That’s why Scripture says, “God catches the wise in their cleverness.” 20 Again Scripture says, “The Lord knows that the thoughts of the wise are pointless.”

21 So don’t brag about people. Everything belongs to you. 22 Whether it is Paul, Apollos, Cephas, the world, life or death, present or future things, everything belongs to you. 23 You belong to Christ, and Christ belongs to God.

Psalm 29

A psalm by David.

29 Give to the Lord, you heavenly beings.
Give to the Lord glory and power.
Give to the Lord the glory his name deserves.
Worship the Lord in ⌞his⌟ holy splendor.

The voice of the Lord rolls over the water.
The God of glory thunders.
The Lord shouts over raging water.
The voice of the Lord is powerful.
The voice of the Lord is majestic.
The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars.
The Lord splinters the cedars of Lebanon.
He makes Lebanon skip along like a calf
and Mount Sirion like a wild ox.
The voice of the Lord strikes with flashes of lightning.
The voice of the Lord makes the wilderness tremble.
The Lord makes the wilderness of Kadesh tremble.
The voice of the Lord splits the oaks
and strips ⌞the trees of⌟ the forests bare.
Everyone in his temple is saying, “Glory!”

10 The Lord sat enthroned over the flood.
The Lord sits enthroned as king forever.
11 The Lord will give power to his people.
The Lord will bless his people with peace.

8/6/2023 DAB Chronological Transcription

Zephaniah 1-3

Welcome to Daily Audio Bible Chronological. I’m China, today is the 6th day of August. Welcome. So great to be here with you today as this is our first day together in August. Hope that it has been a good couple of days as we journey together through another month of reading the word of the Lord. Excited that you are here with us today as we begin a new week. And we also begin a new book today. And this is a really cool book. I was looking it up and just kind of studying it a little bit. And we’re going to be in the book of Zephaniah today, chapters one through three. And if you don’t know, I think Zeff and is like a really cool name. First of all, so this contains some of the most intense images of God’s justice and hope found in the prophetic books. So Zephaniah is a prophetic book. Prophet. He is going to…we’re about to read this in a second, but, alright, he’s here to warn Israel and surrounding nations of the day of the Lord that it it’s near. And he’s coming and umm God’s gonna judge them. And there’s going to be a purification from sin and evil and violence, and so I just thought that was really cool, that you know, we again have another voice and other writing, another record of God’s intense mercy and grace and judgment. And again, it just really solidifies who he is and what He’s about and how we can trust him, how we can approach him, how we can think about him as Father God, but also as Lord of Lord, King of Kings and God of Gods. And him just ruling and reigning over all. So I’m excited to read this book today with you. This week we are in the Good News translation and today we’re in Zephaniah 1 through 3.

Commentary:

I really feel that theme of intense judgment, intense mercy, where we’re ending with a song of joy. And there is this call to sing and shout for joy. Rejoice with all of your heart. The Lord has stopped. Your punishment is removed, all your enemies. The Lord, the King of Israel is with you. There is now no reason to be afraid. Listen, that is good news. I know that contextually in the story that is huge, but then to apply this kind of to our own lives that the Lord is kind. He is merciful, and I think these are things that we don’t always feel or we’re not always taught these things, or shown these things from people, or like in the capital C Church. And it’s more so like how do we get people to come to the Lord? Oh, let’s, you know, tell them about the how bad hell’s going to be. Let’s let’s almost create an emotional response which can feel like emotional manipulation. And I’m not saying every church does this. I’m saying this is what can happen. This is what I hear a lot of people’s stories and they forget that God is merciful. They don’t know that he is and they actually don’t know these parts of his heart because we don’t know his word and so we can read scriptures all over and we can read them out of context and or we can read them just one at a time or we can hear someone recite them, whatever it is. But if we don’t understand God’s word ourselves, they’re not really getting the full picture of who he is. Just in the same way as if you’re overhearing someone talking or gossiping about somebody’s story or what happened with them, you may have a a strong judgment of a person you may or may not have ever met. But you’re not getting the full story of what’s happening. You’re just kind of like listening, eavesdropping, and that person shouldn’t even be saying those things in the first place, you know? But it’s it’s kind of like that where if we don’t know that person, we don’t know their story. We don’t actually know the fullness of who they are and what they’re doing, like what’s going on. They could just had a really bad day. That person could have totally misunderstood what was going on. They may not even know that person. They may just be repeating what somebody else told them. But my point here is that it’s so important to understand God’s word, to be in it. And I personally really love reading it chronologically because it brings it together in a way that helps things click a little differently, maybe not better, but just differently. And we can see God’s heart. And that’s something that he really instilled in me a couple years ago. I remember it was right when Ben and I got married, my husband and I just remember like, there was this long street to get to our house, like to get to our apartment, we would drive this, like really long street, and then we turn into our complex. And I remember every time I would get on that street, the Lord would, it would pop into my head. I’m kinder than you were believing me to be. And I was like, what does this mean? Like what do you, what do you mean? And the Lord just was constantly chipping away at this wall that I like…this lie that I had believed that I don’t like the Lord is just angry with me. I haven’t done what he’s asked of me. I don’t know what my calling in life is. I gotta figure it out. I’m late umm. You know, all these things and just realizing I didn’t actually know who the Lord was, I didn’t understand a lot of his heart or his characteristics had just been believing the things that were being taught, or were being shared, or being told and I really didn’t know him or myself. And so and that was someone who was reading the Bible every day. So just to really grasp this concept of He’s kinder than what we’re believing, and he loves us deeper than what we can imagine. And when you really sit with those things, things began to shift. You may feel a little uncomfortable. You may be like, OK, well, what does this look like? What does this mean? And you can ask Him to show you, and he’ll be faithful to to tell you, hey actually, like these ideologies this, theology, this thing that you are believing in building up around isn’t true and I would love to show you who I really AM and that’s what I believe. I believe that the Lord does that for us, and I believe that as we continue to stay rooted in His word we really see these things coming to to pass.

Prayer:

So Father, I just thank you for your word. I thank you that your heart is never hidden from us when you’re never having to question how you feel about us. Or is this, is this true? Could God really feel this about me. Could this really be true? I’m not sure. I think you that you have always encouraged in your word to taste and see and with a pure heart that is diligently seeking you out. God, I thank you that you reveal yourself to us. And I just pray that we would be people who wouldn’t grow weary in the the pursuit of you God. That we would not become people who are so busy and so distracted, but that we would be people who are constantly seeking you, constantly pursuing you in, in studying and learning your word. And so I just thank you for that. And it’s in your name we pray. Amen.

Good morning, this is Cynthia calling from upstate New York, and I have two prayer requests. One is for my brother George. He is going to be undergoing a procedure to have a port umm inserted so that he can begin chemo. He’s had prostate cancer for the last 12 years. Umm and he’s been doing well with various medications and now his PSA is starting to go up again. So now they’re moving towards chemo in this manner. So needless to say, he’s very nervous and he works every day and he has worked every day since his diagnosis. He’s not not really skipped a beat, but he’s really just nervous and worried about how much more this is going to impact him. Boy, just ask my prayer warriors, so please just surround him with love, with prayer, prayers for peace, prayers for the procedure to go well. Who knows they may decide that they don’t need to do it, but right now that’s the path they’re on. So I just ask for prayer for my brother George. The other prayer request is for my mother, umm Miss Alberta and she’s been taking steroid drops four times a day in her left eye and we’re just praying for some improvement. She has had little and we’re trying to avoid surgery as well as the doctor. They don’t really want to do surgery so he just said for the next eight weeks he wants her to take drops, so please keep her in prayer for that. And I just say thank you to each and everyone of you for your kindness, your love support and I am praying for people as I hear the messages come across the DABC on feed after the podcast. Oh please, just take care of yourselves and and love each other just as Jill tells us. And we’re going to be OK. Love you guys. Bye.

I can actually look in the mirror now and not feel any shame or disgust. I love my life. He has blessed me with a relationship with my children, again, with my new grandbabies. The loving family, a wonderful husband, and so much more. And I just want to say thank you, Lord, for umm taking me out of the that mire of addiction and and putting me back on my feet and showing me the way and I just want to let everybody out there and encourage people, you know, if you just let him lead, He will take control and do amazing things in your life, things you can never even comprehend. I would never believe I would end up where I am today. In my imagination. I thank you, DAB, for being there. And everybody have a wonderful, blessed day. Love you all.

Her youngest is not wanting to spend time with her, and you know this already. I pray that you will give her a yearning to want to be with her mom again. Just want to long for that special thing that mom always did, that nobody else did. I pray that she…that urge will grow stronger, Father, that her wants her Mama. But Lord, I pray you open up a dialogue between the two of them and that’s you’ll heal them physically, emotionally and mentally. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Sunday August 6, 2023 (NIV)

Ezra 3:1-4:23

Worship at the Temple Site Begins Again

When the seventh month came, the people gathered together in Jerusalem. (The Israelites had already settled in their cities.) Then Jozadak’s son Jeshua and his relatives ⌞who were⌟ priests and Shealtiel’s son Zerubbabel and his relatives built an altar for the God of Israel. They built it in order to sacrifice burnt offerings. They ⌞followed the directions⌟ written in Moses’ Teachings. (Moses was a man of God). So they rebuilt the altar on its original site, though they were afraid of the people in the neighboring regions. They sacrificed burnt offerings on it to the Lord every morning and evening.

Following the written directions, they celebrated the Festival of Booths. Each day they sacrificed the required number of burnt offerings. After that, they sacrificed the daily burnt offerings, the offerings for the New Moon Festival and all the other holy festivals of the Lord, and all the freewill offerings brought to the Lord. They started to bring these burnt offerings to the Lord on the first day of the seventh month, even though the foundation of the Lord’s temple had not yet been laid.

Work on the Temple Begins

So they gave money to the stonecutters and carpenters. Then they gave food, drink, and olive oil to the men from Sidon and Tyre in exchange for cedar, which the men would bring by sea from Lebanon to Joppa as King Cyrus of Persia had authorized them to do.

Zerubbabel (who was Shealtiel’s son), Jeshua (who was Jozadak’s son), and the rest of the Jews, (the priests, Levites, and all the others who had come back from exile to Jerusalem) began to rebuild the temple. This happened in the second month of the second year following their return to ⌞the site⌟ of God’s house in Jerusalem. They began by appointing the Levites who were at least 20 years old to direct the work on the Lord’s house. Then Jeshua with his sons and relatives and Kadmiel with his sons who were Judah’s descendants joined Henadad’s family and their sons and relatives, the Levites, in directing those working on God’s house.

A Celebration After the Laying of the Temple’s Foundation

10 The builders laid the foundation of the Lord’s temple. Then the priests who were dressed in their robes took their places with trumpets, and the Levites who were Asaph’s descendants took their places with cymbals to praise the Lord according to the instructions of King David of Israel. 11 As they praised and gave thanks to the Lord, they sang antiphonally:

“He is good; his mercy toward Israel endures forever.”

Then all the people shouted, “Praise the Lord,” because the foundation for the house of the Lord had been laid.

12 But many of the priests, Levites, and the heads of the families who were old enough to have seen the first temple with their own eyes began to sob when they saw the foundation of this temple. Many others shouted for joy. 13 No one could distinguish between the joyful shouts and the loud sobbing because the people were shouting so loudly. The noise was heard from far away.

The Samaritans Stop the Work

When the enemies of Judah and Benjamin heard that the people who returned from exile were building a temple for the Lord God of Israel, they approached Zerubbabel and the heads of the families. They told them, “We want to help you build because we worship the same God you worship. We have been sacrificing to him [a] since the time of King Esarhaddon of Assyria, who brought us here.”

But Zerubbabel, Jeshua, and the rest of the heads of Israel’s families told them, “It isn’t right for your people and our people to build a temple for our God together. We must build it alone for the Lord God of Israel, as King Cyrus of Persia ordered us to do.”

Then the people of that region discouraged the people of Judah and made them afraid to continue building. They bribed officials to keep the people of Judah from carrying out their plans throughout the reign of King Cyrus of Persia until the reign of King Darius of Persia.

When Xerxes began to rule, the enemies of Judah and Jerusalem wrote a letter in which they made an accusation against the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem.

Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel, and the rest of their group wrote to him when Artaxerxes was king of Persia. The letter was written with the Aramaic script and translated into the Aramaic language.

Rehum the commander and Shimshai the scribe wrote another letter against ⌞the people of⌟ Jerusalem to King Artaxerxes. At that time, Rehum the commander and Shimshai the scribe were with the others of their group—the people from Denya, Partakka, Tarpel, Persia, Erech, Babylon, Susa, (that is, those of Elam), 10 and the rest of the people whom the great and noble Assurbanipal deported. (Assurbanipal settled them in the cities of Samaria and the rest of the lands west of the Euphrates River.) 11 This is the copy of the letter they sent to him:

To King Artaxerxes,

From your servants, the people west of the Euphrates:

12 Your Majesty, you should know that the Jews who came to us from you are now in Jerusalem. They are rebuilding that rebellious and wicked city. They are close to finishing the walls. The foundations are already in place. 13 You should also know that if this city is rebuilt and its walls are finished, the Jews will no longer pay taxes, fees, and tolls.

Ultimately, this will hurt the king’s income. 14 Now, because we are paid by your palace, it isn’t right for us to watch something happen that will dishonor the king. So we are sending this letter to inform you 15 that you should search the official records of your predecessors. You will find in those official records that this city has been rebellious and has been a threat to kings and provinces. This city has a history of rebelliousness. That’s why this city was destroyed. 16 We want the king to know that if this city is rebuilt and its walls are finished, you will have nothing left ⌞of your province⌟ west of the Euphrates River.

17 Then the king sent this reply:

To Rehum the commander, Shimshai the scribe, and the rest of their group living in Samaria, and to others west of the Euphrates River: I wish you peace and prosperity!

18 The letter you sent me has been read word for word in my presence. 19 I gave the order, and a search was made. I discovered that this city has a long history of uprisings against kings. Its inhabitants are guilty of treason and rebellion. 20 Jerusalem has had powerful kings who have ruled the whole ⌞province⌟ west of the Euphrates. Taxes, fees, and tolls were paid to them. 21 So order these men to stop rebuilding. Keep this city from being rebuilt until I give the order. 22 Be careful not to neglect your duty in this matter. Why should I, the king, suffer any more harm?

23 Rehum the commander, Shimshai the scribe, and their group hurried to Jerusalem after hearing a copy of King Artaxerxes’ letter. They forced the Jews to stop rebuilding.

1 Corinthians 2:6-3:4

However, we do use wisdom to speak to those who are mature. It is a wisdom that doesn’t belong to this world or to the rulers of this world who are in power today and gone tomorrow. We speak about the mystery of God’s wisdom. It is a wisdom that has been hidden, which God had planned for our glory before the world began. Not one of the rulers of this world has known it. If they had, they wouldn’t have crucified the Lord of glory. But as Scripture says:

“No eye has seen,
no ear has heard,
and no mind has imagined
the things that God has prepared
for those who love him.”

10 God has revealed those things to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches everything, especially the deep things of God. 11 After all, who knows everything about a person except that person’s own spirit? In the same way, no one has known everything about God except God’s Spirit. 12 Now, we didn’t receive the spirit that belongs to the world. Instead, we received the Spirit who comes from God so that we could know the things which God has freely given us. 13 We don’t speak about these things using teachings that are based on intellectual arguments like people do. Instead, we use the Spirit’s teachings. We explain spiritual things to those who have the Spirit.[a]

14 A person who isn’t spiritual doesn’t accept the teachings of God’s Spirit. He thinks they’re nonsense. He can’t understand them because a person must be spiritual to evaluate them. 15 Spiritual people evaluate everything but are subject to no one’s evaluation.

16 “Who has known the mind of the Lord
so that he can teach him?”

However, we have the mind of Christ.

You Belong to Christ

Brothers and sisters, I couldn’t talk to you as spiritual people but as people still influenced by your corrupt nature. You were infants in your faith in Christ. I gave you milk to drink. I didn’t give you solid food because you weren’t ready for it. Even now you aren’t ready for it because you’re still influenced by your corrupt nature.

When you are jealous and quarrel among yourselves, aren’t you influenced by your corrupt nature and living by human standards? When some of you say, “I follow Paul” and others say, “I follow Apollos,” aren’t you acting like ⌞sinful⌟ humans?

Psalm 28

By David.

28 O Lord, I call to you.
O my rock, do not turn a deaf ear to me.
If you remain silent,
I will be like those who go into the pit.
Hear my prayer for mercy when I call to you for help,
when I lift my hands toward your most holy place.
Do not drag me away with wicked people,
with troublemakers who speak of peace with their neighbors
but have evil in their hearts.
Pay them back for what they have done,
for their evil deeds.
Pay them back for what their hands have done,
and give them what they deserve.
The Lord will tear them down and never build them up again,
because they never consider what he has done
or what his hands have made.

Thank the Lord!
He has heard my prayer for mercy!
The Lord is my strength and my shield.
My heart trusted him, so I received help.
My heart is triumphant; I give thanks to him with my song.
The Lord is the strength of his people
and a fortress for the victory of his Messiah.[a]
Save your people, and bless those who belong to you.
Be their shepherd, and carry them forever.

Proverbs 20:24-25

24 The Lord is the one who directs a person’s steps.
How then can anyone understand his own way?
25 It is a trap for a person to say impulsively, “This is a holy offering!”
and later to have second thoughts about those vows.

Ezra 1:1-2:70, 1 Corinthians 1:18-2:5, Psalm 27:7-14, Proverbs 20:22-23

Today is the fifth day of August, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian. It is wonderful to be here with you today, just like it’s fantastic to be here with you together around the Global Campfire every day. It’s a joy that we even have this place that we can gather together. And so, I’m thrilled that we can do that, gather together and take the next step forward. Yesterday, we took a step in the Old Testament that brought us to the conclusion of a book named Second Chronicles, which means that as we move into our reading today, we have brand-new territory to move into, although it might not feel exactly like that we’re not moving into a completely different story, at a completely different time. We’re actually just picking up where Second Chronicles leaves off.

Introduction to the Book of Ezra:

The children of Israel are in exile in Babylon, they were carried away by Nebuchadnezzar, King Nebuchadnezzar and the Babylonians who came and conquered, as a result of the rebelliousness of God’s people. So, Ezra, as we read this, will cover about 80 years of time and three different kings of the Persian Empire: Cyrus the Great, Darius and then Artaxerxes and each of these kings use their power, influence and their kingdoms to favor the Israelites who are returning to their homeland, so that they could rebuild the temple of God and resume worship of the most high God in Jerusalem. In fact, that’s the first kings’ mission, Cyrus the Great, begins all of this with the desire to rebuild the temple in Jerusalem to worship God and he gives permission and resources for it. And about 42,000 of the exiled Israelites, who had been crying and weeping for restoration, finally actually make the trip back. So, we’re going back, and they will be under the leadership of a person named Zerubbabel to rebuild. And once they get there, we will find that they have all kinds of things that they have to face, all kinds of things to endure opposition to overcome. Some of that comes through the intimidation of the people that are nearby. Some of it comes through like political maneuvering. Some comes through just threats that we watched them stay true to the mission and the task as the rebuilding takes place and like most of the things that we find in the Bible, it becomes the mirror as we observe our own lives, our own faithfulness, our own endurance, to that which God has called us to accomplish in our lives. And we can find encouragement. We’re not the only ones to face opposition. So, let’s see what is modeled for us as we begin, today, Ezra chapters 1 and 2.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word and we thank You for, well, we’ve graduated now into new territory in Old and New Testaments. And so, as we begin to engage with the book of Ezra and as we continue to move through Paul’s letter to the Corinthians, come, Holy Spirit, lead us into all truth, lead us to what we need to hear and what we need to see. Give us eyes to see and ears to hear that we might obey You. Come Jesus and lead us we pray. In Your name we ask. Amen.

Prayer and Encouragements:

My precious Father in heaven, thou art worthy. Thou art worthy, Lord. You are the king of all kings Lord. I have a daughter, Tina, who is suffering from non-alcoholic liver disease. She’s down to 100lbs. She can’t eat. She’s trying to get a feeding tube. Please Lord, allow them to do a feeding tube so that she can get nutrition into her. And Lord, I pray for a doner for her liver. She’s a good Christian woman and believes that God will heal her. And Lord, I pray that You will find a doner and give her strength, give her peace of her mind, body and soul. Lord, thou art worthy. And people, if you would just pray for her and pray for a doner and feeding tube and her bodily comfort and comfort of mind. Lord, I just pray that Tina will come through this and be of glory to You. Thank you, people, for praying. You are my sisters and brothers in the Lord. And I would have it no other way than to be a Christian and love Jesus. Bye.

Intertwined, this is God’s Life Speaker. I heard you on the second day of August and you were pulling up to the gates of the jail which will be your home for the next couple of days. But I didn’t think I have ever walked through these kinds of gates with anybody in my imagination because you were able to describe it feelings and the place and you said that you knew that we were with you, and this was gonna be so hard, but you were just in such a spiritual state of mind. That you were able to paint a picture for the rest of us so that we would know how to pray into something with you and for you, even better. And so, thank you for that invitation. Thank you for that visual. Yeah, and this whole time, like we, we are with you. We are together in the spirit just praying for each other. So, Holy Spirit, we need to pray for Intertwined. Man, this is a such a Hebrews 12 lesson. And someone else on this morning’s call, just called in about that and Lord, it is, we don’t like this kind of discipline. But God in it, let us be trained. Give Intertwined the training that You want her to receive. So, that she can come out of this with the peaceful fruit of righteousness. So, strengthen her feeble hands and knees. And Lord, just give her the footing and the pathway that she needs so that she can come out of this to draw others, will be so drawn to her because she is walking out You and the light will be seen. So, we just pray for strengthening. We pray for her to just come up out of this and to be stronger still. We know she will because Your word is true, and we believe this. In the name of Jesus. Amen.

Hello Daily Audio Bible family. This is Jermaine from Clarkesville, Tennessee. I wanted to call and pray for the woman who was pulling up to the jail. I believe she said her name was Intertwined in God’s Love. Sister, I’m praying for you. Father, in the precious name of Jesus Christ, we come to You now, oh God, with our sister in mind. Father, she has to go into this institution. But God, we ask that this time will be an opportunity to grow closer to You. It will be moment of divine fellowship with You. That Your Holy Spirit will be with her, comforting her, leading her and guiding her to the people that she’s supposed to go to while she’s in there to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Father, I pray that You will invigorate her with Your strength. And I pray most of all, Father, that when this is over, when she leaves, that people, through her, through Your will, will have given their hearts to Jesus Christ. Father, I pray for her protection, I pray for her peace, and I pray, oh God, that this will go by so fast that it’ll be like a blip in her life. We thank You for Your love. In the name of Jesus Christ, we pray.

Good morning, this is Abundantly Blessed Tanya from Massachusetts calling for Intertwined in God’s Love for Intertwined in God’s Love. And I just wanna say that is what you are, love that your name, your handle is actually reflective of who you are. You are not separated in any way from the Lord, and He’s always with you no matter where you are. The Bible says whether you’re on the far side of the earth or you make your bed in Sheol and at this point in time you have a hard thing to do but yet He’s with you in the challenge. And you will have a glorious time. There’s going to be such revelation for you. I believe this is time that is meant for you and Him, so that it is precious time for you to learn some things that He wants to share with you. Personal time of intimacy and time to be spoken to your heart, to go places in your heart that fingers can’t go, that massaging can’t go, that your friends’ words can’t go, because it was only designed for Him. So, I just want you to look at this time that you have as a vacation with God, even though the surroundings don’t look like such. Where God is, He turns it all into a wonderful access. So, I’m gonna say enjoy, rejoice in this time. He’s gonna bring you through mightily.

2 Chronicles 33:14-34:33, Romans 16:10-27, Psalm 26:1-12, Proverbs 20:19

Today is the third day of August, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian and is there a better place to be than around the Global Campfire together, immersing ourselves in the Scriptures? There’s lots of places that we could be, but here we are, gathered together and orienting ourselves to God through the Scriptures. So, I am thrilled to be here today for the next step. We have been working our way through Second Chronicles for a bit now and we should reach the conclusion of Second Chronicles tomorrow, I believe. And then in the New Testament, we will conclude Paul’s letter to the Romans, today. So, let’s jump in, Second Chronicles chapter 33 verse 14 through 34 verse 33.

Commentary:

Okay so, and Second Chronicles today, we read of King Josiah, who was a king who followed after the ways of the Lord. He was a good king and he reformed Israel and brought them back to God. He received the book of the law, and after having read it, realizing just how far they had abandoned God. So, with all of his heart. He reformed, drew the people back to God, destroying the idolatry in the land. This happens to us too. We read this on a grand scale at a national level. But sometimes we encounter information that comes into our lives that makes us realize we’re not where we need to be. We seriously have blind spots. We are seriously off-track. And so, what Josiah did in this moment was to do everything that he could to restore the people to God. This including tearing down shrines for idolatry and temples and is cleansing the land. It’s not any different for the land inside of us. When we find these things in our lives that do not belong in our lives, then with…with intention we remove them, we tear them down and remove them. Cleansing, repenting, and being restored. We also concluded Romans today, what a journey. What a magnificent articulation of the Gospel for Jew and Gentile alike. For all who believe in the name of the Lord Jesus and that He came to redeem and restore us and that we each have a role to play, regardless of our ethnicity or our upbringing or our history. And then finally, we come to Proverbs, which gives us a sentence that is so big it’s life-changing. The one who reveals secrets is a constant gossip. So, here’s the reality. If you’re the kind of person who hears some kind of juicy morsel, a little piece of information about somebody that’s personal or private and then you like to quote/unquote share those bits of information with other people, like making yourself look like you’re more dialed in, more connected to what’s going on or you’re concerned or it’s a point of prayer, just for, just need to tell you this so that we can pray. All with the intention of kind of being in the know, then you’re a gossip. And I know that that sounds pretty direct. I mean, being told that could even be offensive, but not as offensive as gossip. Gossip, I mean it’s just like conversation right, where you just kind of sharing things, but we know when we’ve crossed that line and there is, in my experience anyway, in community, I haven’t seen anything more powerful for dividing and destroying community then gossip. I mean, think about it, when you found out a time that you may be had been gossiped about with half the information and all the assumptions, how do you feel, when you discover this? It feels like betrayal. It feels unsafe. And those are two words that should not be used to describe the body of Christ. So, it’s not that much of a surprise that the Bible continually reminds us to pay attention to what we say and what we hear. The Proverbs says, the one who reveals secrets is a constant gossip, avoid someone with a big mouth, right. So, it’s the delivery mechanism and the receiving mechanism. It’s the speaking it and it’s the hearing of it. We’re to avoid this. I mean, all we have to do is just think about the last time we’ve, we felt like gossip was taking place around us, centered around us. Did anything good come from that? Or the times that we share sensitive information that shouldn’t be shared, and the person found out about it. We’re they rejoicing and jumping up and down and just praising the Lord? Gossip undermines the trust that is necessary for community. So, if we have a habit of listening to the latest gossip or dispensing the latest gossip then we’re perpetuating a problem that keeps us from true intimacy and friendship. So, that should give us pause and some things to consider and allow us to pay attention to the kinds of things, the kinds of information, the sensitive things that, that we’re sharing. The Bible tells us that we’re supposed to be able to confess our sins to each other and pray for each other that we may be healed. Gossip works in opposition to that.

Prayer:

And so, Father, we thank You for Your word and another day. Thank You for bringing us to the conclusion of Romans and what a beautiful time that was. And we’re so looking forward to moving forward into First Corinthians, tomorrow. We thank You Lord for Your word. And we heed the counsel that Proverbs is giving us today. Once again, reminding us that our words matter. May we pay attention to the words we say. We ask in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Prayer and Encouragements:

Good morning Daily Audio Bible. This is Cheryl in Auburn. I’ve been listening for a couple years. And praying for all your requests. And so thankful that I’m a part of this community. And thankful for Brian’s calling. I have a request for my brother who’s been struggling with alcohol and not really able to face it. He lost a job not due to his alcohol, we’re not sure because we never get the true story, but he wasn’t able to afford his rent so, he’s in a homeless shelter. And he just got his second DUI. And that means jailtime. And I’ve been talking to him and going to see him. It’s so crushing to see how far he’s gone downhill. And thank goodness I did found out about his DUI because I was able to say Shawn, this is the deal, you were arrested, you got a DUI, because he would have never admitted it to us. And he’s finally humbled himself. My whole family are believers of God, but Shawn is the prodigal one. So, I’m just asking for prayer. He said he made friends in the homeless shelter. And I spoke to one of his friends. And he said that he’s got my brothers back. He, when he drinks too much and he can’t make it into the homeless shelter, he puts him in a shopping cart and drives him to the shelter. And that just broke my heart. To believe that first of all, that Shawn was in that bad of …

Hi, this is Sue in Wisconsin. I’m sitting here listening to the community, community prayer for the weekend. I’m so uplifted by the prayers coming in, the praise reports and I was very low and depressed when I sat down at my desk this morning to work. And, and then I got to hear from God’s Smile and Blind Tony and Peter and you guys are so uplifting. Thank you for lifting my spirits. I would also like to add a prayer request for my son Drew who suffers from depression and anger issues. He’s a veteran and I know there are things, since he’s been home that have just been very difficult for him. He has a family. He has a new son that was born this month and so I would just pray for him. Pray for his marriage, pray for his issues with depression and anger and that they could be resolved. And that he could find the help and support in his community that he needs. Yeah, so thank you guys for praying and thank you for all of those who call in and have brightened my day. Really appreciate it. Love you guys. Have a great day. Bye.

Hey DAB family this is Adopted and Loved. I am a calling for a few reasons. One of them is to give a praise report of how God is good and faithful. I went home and ran into an old friend who had gone through a divorce and was really in a bad way several years ago. And here he had started a ministry up in Northern Minnesota, was doing well. Had all of his kids and was like in love with God. And it was just good to see somebody on the other side. I’m also asking for prayer that is extremely distracting, want to keep my mind in Christ and what not and I think it’s hard. This is something I struggle with, to keep my mind still in God. Rather than trying to predict the future and everything. And so, and I need to, I need to just come to Him and say, and say I need help. Thank you all and I appreciate being able to be apart of this community and being able to pray with you all as well.

Good morning everybody. Hello, this is God’s Smile here and Peter. And this is for Alice. DABer Alice. Jesus loves me this I know. For the Bible tells me so. Little ones to Him belong. They are weak but He is strong. Yes, Jesus loves me. Yes, Jesus loves you. Yes, Jesus loves us, the Bible tells me so. Jesus loves me, He who died. Heavens gates are open wide. He will wash away my sin, let his little child come in. Yes, Jesus loves me. Yes, Jesus loves me. Yes, Jesus loves me. The Bible tells me so. Alice, we love you. And we want to pray for you, that the peace of God be with you, especially this week and throughout this year, and throughout your life. You are loved. Jesus loves you. Kiss kiss, bye bye from Peter and me. Bye.

Ezra 1-2

Cyrus Allows the Jews to Return from Babylon(A)

The promise the Lord had spoken through Jeremiah was about to come true in Cyrus’ first year as king of Persia. The Lord inspired the king to make this announcement throughout his whole kingdom and then to put it in writing.

This is what King Cyrus of Persia says: The Lord God of heaven has given me all the kingdoms of the world. Then he ordered me to build a temple for him in Jerusalem (which is in Judah). May God be with all of you who are his people. You may go to Jerusalem (which is in Judah) and build a temple for the Lord God of Israel. He is the God who is in Jerusalem. All who ⌞choose to⌟ remain behind, wherever they may be living, should provide the people who are leaving with silver, gold, supplies, livestock, and freewill offerings to be used in God’s temple in Jerusalem.

Sheshbazzar Returns with the Temple Furnishings

Then the heads of the families of Judah and Benjamin, the priests, and the Levites—everyone God had inspired—came forward to rebuild the Lord’s temple in Jerusalem. All their neighbors ⌞who were remaining behind⌟ provided them with articles made from silver and gold, supplies, livestock, and valuable gifts besides everything that was freely offered. King Cyrus brought out the utensils belonging to the Lord’s temple. Nebuchadnezzar had taken these utensils from Jerusalem and put them in the temple of his own god. King Cyrus of Persia put the treasurer Mithredath in charge of bringing them out. So Mithredath made a list of them for Prince Sheshbazzar of Judah.[a] This is the inventory:

gold dishes … 30

silver dishes … 1,000

knives … 29

10 gold bowls … 30

61 These descendants of the priests ⌞couldn’t prove their families were Israelites⌟: the descendants of Hobaiah, Hakkoz, and Barzillai (who had married one of the daughters of Barzillai from Gilead and took that ⌞family⌟ name). 62 These people searched for their ⌞family⌟ names in the genealogical records, but their names couldn’t be found there. For this reason they were considered contaminated and couldn’t be priests. 63 The governor told them not to eat any of the most holy food until a priest could use the Urim and Thummim [b] ⌞to settle the problem⌟.

The Total of the People and Animals Returning from Exile(J)

64 The whole assembly totaled 42,360. 65 In addition to the male and female servants who numbered 7,337, they also had 200 male and female singers. 66 They had 736 horses, 245 mules, 67 435 camels, and 6,720 donkeys.

Gifts Given for the Temple(K)

68 When some of the heads of the families came to the Lord’s temple in Jerusalem, they contributed freewill offerings to help rebuild God’s temple on its ⌞former⌟ site. 69 They contributed as much as they could to the treasury for this work: 1,030 pounds of gold, 5,740 pounds of silver, and 100 robes for the priests.

70 The priests, the Levites, some of the people, the singers, the gatekeepers, and the temple servants settled in their own cities. All the other Israelites settled in their own cities.

1 Corinthians 1:18-2:5

18 The message about the cross is nonsense to those who are being destroyed, but it is God’s power to us who are being saved. 19 Scripture says,

“I will destroy the wisdom of the wise.
I will reject the intelligence of intelligent people.”

20 Where is the wise person? Where is the scholar? Where is the persuasive speaker of our time? Hasn’t God turned the wisdom of the world into nonsense? 21 The world with its wisdom was unable to recognize God in terms of his own wisdom. So God decided to use the nonsense of the Good News we speak to save those who believe. 22 Jews ask for miraculous signs, and Greeks look for wisdom, 23 but our message is that Christ was crucified. This offends Jewish people and makes no sense to people who are not Jewish. 24 But to those Jews and Greeks who are called, he is Christ, God’s power and God’s wisdom. 25 God’s nonsense is wiser than human wisdom, and God’s weakness is stronger than human strength.

26 Brothers and sisters, consider what you were when God called you to be Christians. Not many of you were wise from a human point of view. You were not in powerful positions or in the upper social classes. 27 But God chose what the world considers nonsense to put wise people to shame. God chose what the world considers weak to put what is strong to shame. 28 God chose what the world considers ordinary and what it despises—what it considers to be nothing—in order to destroy what it considers to be something. 29 As a result, no one can brag in God’s presence. 30 You are partners with Christ Jesus because of God. Jesus has become our wisdom sent from God, our approval, our holiness, and our ransom from sin. 31 As Scripture says, “Whoever brags must brag about what the Lord has done.”

Brothers and sisters, when I came to you, I didn’t speak about God’s mystery [a] as if it were some kind of brilliant message or wisdom. While I was with you, I decided to deal with only one subject—Jesus Christ, who was crucified. When I came to you, I was weak. I was afraid and very nervous. I didn’t speak my message with persuasive intellectual arguments. I spoke my message with a show of spiritual power so that your faith would not be based on human wisdom but on God’s power.

Psalm 27:7-14

Hear, O Lord, when I cry aloud.
Have pity on me, and answer me.
⌞When you said,⌟
“Seek my face,”
my heart said to you,
“O Lord, I will seek your face.” [a]
Do not hide your face from me.
Do not angrily turn me away.
You have been my help.
Do not leave me!
Do not abandon me, O God, my savior!
10 Even if my father and mother abandon me, the Lord will take care of me.
11 Teach me your way, O Lord.
Lead me on a level path
because I have enemies who spy on me.
12 Do not surrender me to the will of my opponents.
False witnesses have risen against me.
They breathe out violence.
13 I believe that I will see the goodness of the Lord
in this world of the living.

14 Wait with hope for the Lord.
Be strong, and let your heart be courageous.
Yes, wait with hope for the Lord.

2 Chronicles 35-36

King Josiah Celebrates the Passover(A)

35 Josiah celebrated the Passover for the Lord in Jerusalem. The Passover lamb was slaughtered on the fourteenth day of the first month. Josiah appointed the priests to their duties and encouraged them to serve in the Lord’s temple. He told the Levites, who instructed all Israel and performed ceremonies to make themselves holy to the Lord, “Put the holy ark in the temple that Solomon, son of David and king of Israel, built. It shouldn’t be carried on your shoulders any longer. Serve the Lord your God and his people Israel. Get yourselves ready with the family groups of your divisions, which are listed in the records of King David of Israel and the records of his son Solomon. Stand in the holy place representing the family divisions of your relatives, the people ⌞of Israel⌟. Let the Levites be considered a part of each family. Slaughter the Passover lamb, perform the ceremonies to make yourselves holy, and prepare ⌞the lambs⌟ for the other Israelites as the Lord instructed ⌞us⌟ through Moses.”

Josiah provided the people with 33,000 sheep and goats to be sacrificed as Passover offerings for all who were present. In addition, he provided 3,000 bulls. (These animals were the king’s property.) His officials also voluntarily gave animals to the people, priests, and Levites. Hilkiah, Zechariah, and Jehiel, the men in charge of God’s temple, gave the priests 2,600 sheep and goats and 300 bulls for Passover sacrifices. Conaniah and his brothers Shemaiah and Nethanel, and Hashabiah, Jeiel, and Jozabad, the leaders of the Levites, gave the Levites 5,000 sheep and goats and 500 bulls as Passover sacrifices.

10 So the service was prepared. The priests took their positions with the Levites according to their divisions, as the king had ordered. 11 They slaughtered the Passover lambs. The priests sprinkled the blood with their hands while the Levites skinned the lambs. 12 They set aside the burnt offerings to give them to the laypeople according to their family divisions. The laypeople could then present them to the Lord as written in the Book of Moses. The Levites did the same with the bulls. 13 They roasted the Passover lambs according to the directions. They boiled the holy offerings in pots, kettles, and pans and immediately served them to all the people. 14 Later, they prepared ⌞the animals⌟ for themselves and for the priests because the priests (Aaron’s descendants) were sacrificing the burnt offerings and the fat until that evening.

So the Levites prepared ⌞the animals⌟ for themselves and the priests. 15 The singers (Asaph’s descendants) were in their places as David, Asaph, Heman, and the king’s seer [a] Jeduthun had commanded. The gatekeepers were stationed at each gate. They didn’t need to leave their work, because their relatives, the Levites, prepared ⌞animals⌟ for them.

16 So everything was arranged that day for the worship of the Lord. The Passover was celebrated, and the burnt offerings were sacrificed on the Lord’s altar as King Josiah had commanded. 17 The Israelites who were present celebrated the Passover at that time. They also celebrated the Festival of Unleavened Bread for seven days.

18 Never had a Passover like this been celebrated in Israel during the time of the prophet Samuel or the kings of Israel. They did not celebrate the Passover as Josiah celebrated it with priests, Levites, all of Judah, the people of Israel who could be found, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem. 19 In the eighteenth year of Josiah’s reign, this Passover was celebrated.

Josiah’s Sin Leads to His Death(B)

20 After all this, when Josiah had repaired the temple, King Neco of Egypt came to fight a battle at Carchemish at the Euphrates River. Josiah went to attack him. 21 But Neco sent messengers to Josiah to say, “What’s your quarrel with me, king of Judah? I’m not attacking you. I’ve come to fight those who are at war with me. God told me to hurry. God is with me, so stop now or else he will destroy you.”

22 But Josiah would not stop his attack. He disguised himself as he went into battle. He refused to listen to Neco’s words, which came from God, and he went to fight in the valley of Megiddo.

23 Some archers shot King Josiah. The king told his officers, “Take me away because I’m badly wounded.”

24 His officers took him out of the chariot and brought him to Jerusalem in his other chariot. He died and was buried in the tombs of his ancestors. All Judah and Jerusalem mourned for Josiah. 25 Jeremiah sang a funeral song about Josiah. All the male and female singers still sing funeral songs about Josiah today. This became a tradition in Israel. They are written in ⌞the Book of⌟ the Funeral Songs.

26 Everything else about Josiah—including his devotion to God by following what is written in the Lord’s Teachings 27 and his acts from first to last—are written in the records of the kings of Israel and Judah.

King Jehoahaz of Judah(C)

36 Then people of the land took Josiah’s son Jehoahaz and made him king in Jerusalem in place of his father. Jehoahaz was 23 years old when he became king, and he was king in Jerusalem for 3 months. The king of Egypt removed him from office in Jerusalem and fined the country 7,500 pounds of silver and 75 pounds of gold. The king of Egypt made Jehoahaz’s brother Eliakim king of Judah and Jerusalem and changed Eliakim’s name to Jehoiakim. Neco took Jehoahaz away to Egypt.

King Jehoiakim of Judah(D)

Jehoiakim was 25 years old when he began to rule, and he ruled for 11 years in Jerusalem. He did what the Lord his God considered evil. King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon attacked Jehoiakim and put him in bronze shackles to take him to Babylon. Nebuchadnezzar also brought some of the utensils of the Lord’s temple to Babylon. He put them in his palace in Babylon.

Everything else about Jehoiakim—the disgusting things he did and all the charges against him—is written in the Book of the Kings of Israel and Judah. His son Jehoiakin succeeded him as king.

King Jehoiakin of Judah(E)

Jehoiakin was eight years old when he began to rule as king. He was king for three months and ten days in Jerusalem. He did what the Lord considered evil.

10 In the spring King Nebuchadnezzar sent for Jehoiakin and brought him to Babylon with the valuable utensils from the Lord’s temple. Nebuchadnezzar made Jehoiakin’s uncle Zedekiah king of Judah and Jerusalem.

King Zedekiah of Judah(F)

11 Zedekiah was 21 years old when he began to rule, and he ruled for 11 years in Jerusalem. 12 He did what the Lord his God considered evil and didn’t humble himself in front of the prophet Jeremiah, who spoke for the Lord. 13 Zedekiah also rebelled against King Nebuchadnezzar. Nebuchadnezzar had made Zedekiah swear an oath of allegiance to him in God’s name. But Zedekiah became so stubborn and so impossible to deal with that he refused to turn back to the Lord God of Israel.

14 All the officials, the priests, and the people became increasingly unfaithful and followed all the disgusting practices of the nations. Although the Lord had made the temple in Jerusalem holy, they made the temple unclean.[b] 15 The Lord God of their ancestors repeatedly sent messages through his messengers because he wanted to spare his people and his dwelling place. 16 But they mocked God’s messengers, despised his words, and made fun of his prophets until the Lord became angry with his people. He could no longer heal them.

17 So he had the Babylonian king attack them and execute their best young men in their holy temple. He didn’t spare the best men or the unmarried women, the old people or the sick people. God handed all of them over to him. 18 He brought to Babylon each of the utensils from God’s temple, the treasures from the Lord’s temple, and the treasures of the king and his officials. 19 They burned God’s temple, tore down Jerusalem’s walls, burned down all its palaces, and destroyed everything of value. 20 The king of Babylon took those who weren’t executed to Babylon to be slaves for him and his sons. They remained captives until the Persian Empire began to rule. 21 This happened so that the Lord’s words spoken through Jeremiah would be fulfilled. The land had its years of rest and was made acceptable ⌞again⌟. While it lay in ruins, ⌞the land had its⌟ 70 years of rest.

King Cyrus Allows the Jews to Return from Babylon(G)

22 The promise the Lord had spoken through Jeremiah was about to come true in Cyrus’ first year as king of Persia. The Lord inspired the king to make this announcement throughout his whole kingdom and then to put it in writing.

23 This is what King Cyrus of Persia says: The Lord God of heaven has given me all the kingdoms of the world. And he has ordered me to build a temple for him in Jerusalem (which is in Judah). May the Lord God be with all of you who are his people. You may go.

1 Corinthians 1:1-17

Greeting

From Paul, called to be an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and from Sosthenes, our brother in the Christian faith.

To God’s church that was made holy by Christ Jesus and called to be God’s holy people in the city of Corinth and to people everywhere who call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Good will [a] and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ are yours!

I always thank God for you because Christ Jesus has shown you God’s good will. Through Christ Jesus you have become rich in every way—in speech and knowledge of every kind. Our message about Christ has been verified among you. Therefore, you don’t lack any gift as you wait eagerly for our Lord Jesus Christ to be revealed. He will continue to give you strength until the end so that no one can accuse you of anything on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God faithfully keeps his promises. He called you to be partners with his Son Jesus Christ our Lord.

God’s Wisdom Is Better Than the World’s Wisdom

10 Brothers and sisters, I encourage all of you in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to agree with each other and not to split into opposing groups. I want you to be united in your understanding and opinions. 11 Brothers and sisters, some people from Chloe’s family have made it clear to me that you are quarreling among yourselves. 12 This is what I mean: Each of you is saying, “I follow Paul,” or “I follow Apollos,” or “I follow Cephas,” [b] or “I follow Christ.” 13 Has Christ been divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Were you baptized in Paul’s name? 14 I thank God that [c] I didn’t baptize any of you except Crispus and Gaius 15 so that no one can say you were baptized in my name. 16 I also baptized Stephanas and his family. Beyond that, I’m not sure whether I baptized anyone else. 17 Christ didn’t send me to baptize. Instead, he sent me to spread the Good News. I didn’t use intellectual arguments. That would have made the cross of Christ lose its meaning.

Footnotes:

  1. 1:3 Or “Grace.”
  2. 1:12 Cephas   is the Aramaic name for the Apostle Peter.
  3. 1:14 A few of the older manuscripts read “I am thankful that.”

Psalm 27:1-6

By David.

27 The Lord is my light and my salvation.
Who is there to fear?
The Lord is my life’s fortress.
Who is there to be afraid of?

Evildoers closed in on me to tear me to pieces.
My opponents and enemies stumbled and fell.
Even though an army sets up camp against me,
my heart will not be afraid.
Even though a war breaks out against me,
I will still have confidence ⌞in the Lord.

I have asked one thing from the Lord.
This I will seek:
to remain in the Lord’s house all the days of my life
in order to gaze at the Lord’s beauty
and to search for an answer in his temple.
He hides me in his shelter when there is trouble.
He keeps me hidden in his tent.
He sets me high on a rock.
Now my head will be raised above my enemies who surround me.
I will offer sacrifices with shouts of joy in his tent.
I will sing and make music to praise the Lord.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Thursday August 3, 2023 (NIV)

2 Chronicles 33:14-34:33

14 After this, Manasseh rebuilt the outer wall of the City of David from west of Gihon Spring in the valley to the entrance of Fish Gate. He made the wall go around the Ophel, and he built it very high. He put army commanders in every fortified city in Judah.

15 Manasseh got rid of the foreign gods and the idol in the Lord’s temple. He got rid of the altars he had built in the temple on the Lord’s mountain and in Jerusalem. 16 He built the Lord’s altar and sacrificed fellowship offerings and thank offerings on it. And he told Judah to serve the Lord God of Israel. 17 The people continued to sacrifice at the illegal places of worship, but they sacrificed only to the Lord their God.

18 Everything else about Manasseh—including his prayer to his God and the words that the seers [a] spoke to him in the name of the Lord God of Israel—are in the records of the kings of Israel. 19 His prayer and how God accepted it are written in the records of Hozai. The things he did before he humbled himself are also written there. This includes all his sins and unfaithfulness and the places where he built illegal worship sites and set up idols and poles dedicated to the goddess Asherah.

20 Manasseh lay down in death with his ancestors. They buried him in his own palace. His son Amon succeeded him as king.

King Amon of Judah(A)

21 Amon was 22 years old when he began to rule, and he ruled for 2 years in Jerusalem. 22 He did what the Lord considered evil, as his father Manasseh had done. Amon sacrificed to all the idols his father Manasseh had made, and he worshiped them. 23 He didn’t humble himself in front of the Lord as his father Manasseh had humbled himself. Instead, Amon continued to sin.

24 His officials plotted against him and killed him in his palace. 25 Then the people of the land killed everyone who had plotted against King Amon. They made his son Josiah king in his place.

King Josiah Reforms Judah’s Worship(B)

34 Josiah was 8 years old when he began to rule, and he was king for 31 years in Jerusalem. He did what the Lord considered right. He lived in the ways of his ancestor David and never stopped living this way.

In the eighth year of his reign, while he was still a boy, he began to dedicate his life to serving the God of his ancestor David. In his twelfth year as king, he began to make Judah and Jerusalem clean [b] by destroying the illegal places of worship, poles dedicated to the goddess Asherah, carved idols, and metal idols. He had the altars of the various Baal gods torn down. He cut down the incense altars that were above them. He destroyed the Asherah poles, carved idols, and metal idols. He ground them into powder and scattered the powder over the tombs of those who had sacrificed to them. He burned the bones of the priests on their altars. So he made Judah and Jerusalem clean. In the cities of Manasseh, Ephraim, Simeon, and as far as Naphtali, he removed all their temples, tore down the altars, beat the Asherah poles and idols into powder, and cut down all the incense altars everywhere in Israel. Then he went back to Jerusalem.

King Josiah Rededicates Judah to God’s Promise(C)

In the eighteenth year of his reign as he was making the land and the temple clean, Josiah sent Shaphan, son of Azaliah, Maaseiah, the mayor of the city, and Joah, the royal historian and son of Joahaz, to repair the temple of the Lord his God. They came to the chief priest Hilkiah and gave him the money that had been brought to God’s temple, the money that the Levite doorkeepers had collected from the tribes of Manasseh and Ephraim, from all who were left in Israel, from everyone in the tribes of Judah and Benjamin, and from the inhabitants of Jerusalem. 10 They gave the money to the foremen who were in charge of the Lord’s temple. These foremen gave it to the workmen who were restoring and repairing the temple. 11 (These workers included carpenters and builders.) They were to buy quarried stones and wood for the fittings and beams of the buildings that the kings of Judah had allowed to become run-down. 12 The men did their work faithfully under the supervision of Jahath and Obadiah (Levites descended from Merari), and Zechariah and Meshullam (descendants of Kohath). The Levites, who were skilled musicians, 13 also supervised the workers and directed all the workmen on the various jobs. Some of the Levites served as scribes, officials, or gatekeepers.

14 When they brought out the money that had been deposited in the Lord’s temple, the priest Hilkiah found the Book of the Lord’s Teachings written by Moses. 15 Hilkiah told the scribe Shaphan, “I have found the Book of the Teachings in the Lord’s temple.” Hilkiah gave the book to Shaphan.

16 Shaphan took the book to the king and reported, “We are doing everything you told us to do. 17 We took the money that was donated in the Lord’s temple and gave it to the supervisors and the workmen.” 18 Then the scribe Shaphan told the king, “The priest Hilkiah has given me a book.” And Shaphan read it to the king.

19 When the king heard what the Teachings said, he tore his clothes ⌞in distress⌟. 20 Then the king gave an order to Hilkiah, Ahikam (son of Shaphan), Abdon (son of Micah), the scribe Shaphan, and the royal official Asaiah. He said, 21 “On behalf of those who are left in Israel and Judah and me, ask the Lord about the words in this book that was found. The Lord’s fierce anger has been poured on us because our ancestors did not obey the Lord’s word by doing everything written in this book.”

22 So Hilkiah and the king’s officials went to talk to the prophet Huldah about this matter. She was the wife of Shallum, son of Tokhath and grandson of Hasrah. Shallum was in charge of the ⌞royal⌟ wardrobe. Huldah was living in the Second Part of Jerusalem.

23 She told them, “This is what the Lord God of Israel says: Tell the man who sent you to me, 24 ‘This is what the Lord says: I’m going to bring disaster on this place and on the people living here according to the curses written in the book that was read to the king of Judah. 25 I will do this because they have abandoned me and sacrificed to other gods in order to make me furious. Therefore, my anger will be poured on this place and will never come to an end.’ ”

26 ⌞Huldah added,⌟ “Tell Judah’s king who sent you to me to ask the Lord a question, ‘This is what the Lord God of Israel says about the words you heard: 27 You had a change of heart and humbled yourself in front of God when you heard my words against this place and those who live here. You humbled yourself, tore your clothes ⌞in distress⌟, and cried in front of me. So I will listen ⌞to you⌟, declares the Lord. 28 That is why I’m going to bring you to your ancestors. I’m going to bring you to your grave in peace, and your eyes will not see any of the disaster I’m going to bring on this place and those who live here.’ ”

So they reported this to the king.

29 Then the king sent for all the respected leaders of Judah and Jerusalem to join him. 30 The king, everyone in Judah, everyone living in Jerusalem, the priests, the Levites, and all the people (young and old) went up to the Lord’s temple. He read everything written in the Book of the Promise [c] found in the Lord’s temple so that they could hear it. 31 The king stood in his place and made a promise to the Lord that he would follow the Lord and obey his commands, instructions, and laws with all his heart and soul. He said he would live by the terms of the promise written in this book. 32 He also made all those found in Jerusalem and Benjamin join with him ⌞in the promise⌟. Then the people of Jerusalem lived according to the promise of God, the God of their ancestors.

33 Josiah got rid of all the disgusting idols throughout Israelite territory. He made all people found in Israel serve the Lord their God. As long as he lived, they didn’t stop following the Lord God of their ancestors.

All the churches of Christ greet you.

17 Brothers and sisters, I urge you to watch out for those people who create divisions and who make others fall away ⌞from the Christian faith⌟ by teaching doctrine that is not the same as you have learned. Stay away from them. 18 People like these are not serving Christ our Lord. They are serving their own desires. By their smooth talk and flattering words they deceive unsuspecting people.

19 Everyone has heard about your obedience and this makes me happy for you. I want you to do what is good and to avoid what is evil. 20 The God of peace will quickly crush Satan under your feet. May the good will [a] of our Lord Jesus be with you!

21 Timothy my coworker greets you; so do Lucius, Jason, and Sosipater, who are Jewish by birth like me.

23 Gaius greets you. He is host to me and the whole church.

Erastus, the city treasurer, greets you.

Quartus, our brother in the Christian faith, greets you.[b]

25 God can strengthen you by the Good News and the message I tell about Jesus Christ. He can strengthen you by revealing the mystery that was kept in silence for a very long time 26 but now is publicly known. The everlasting God ordered that what the prophets wrote must be shown to the people of every nation to bring them to the obedience that is associated with faith. 27 God alone is wise. Glory belongs to him through Jesus Christ forever! Amen.

Psalm 26

By David.

26 Judge me favorably, O Lord,
because I have walked with integrity
and I have trusted you without wavering.
Examine me, O Lord, and test me.
Look closely into my heart and mind.
I see your mercy in front of me.
I walk in the light of your truth.
I did not sit with liars,
and I will not be found among hypocrites.
I have hated the mob of evildoers
and will not sit with wicked people.
I will wash my hands in innocence.
I will walk around your altar, O Lord,
so that I may loudly sing a hymn of thanksgiving
and tell about all your miracles.

O Lord, I love the house where you live,
the place where your glory dwells.

Do not sweep away my soul along with hardened sinners
or my life along with bloodthirsty people.
10 Evil schemes are in their hands.
Their right hands are full of bribes.
11 But I walk with integrity.
Rescue me, and have pity on me.
12 My feet stand on level ground.
I will praise the Lord with the choirs in worship.
