Genesis 24:52-26:16, Matthew 8:18-34, Psalms 10:1-15, Proverbs 3:7-8

Today is the 11th day of the month of January welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I am Brian it is a great to be here with you today around the Global Campfire that is the community here. What a blessing that it is that we have this space, this serene calm place to enter into every day together and just relax and let the Scriptures come alive in our hearts. And, so, let’s dive in. We’re reading from the Christian Standard Bible this week, picking up where we left off yesterday. Genesis chapter 24 verse 52 through 26 verse 16 today. And by way of reminder, we are moving into the second generation. A wife for the son of promise, Isaac is being searched for, and Rebekah has been found. But does she want to leave her homeland and go marry Isaac in a land far away. Let’s continue the journey.

Commentary:

Okay. So, we have met Abram whose name became Abraham. We know this. We’ve been following and tracking that story. Today we reach the conclusion of Abraham’s life. He lived to be 175 years old according to the Scriptures. And although his life and story have come to an end in this narrative, the book of Genesis, Abraham effects the world until this day. For example, Hebrews, the Jewish people. Those who are practicing Judaism that, we who are Christians and those who practice Islam all claim an allegiance to this guy, Abraham. And although we’ve reached the end of the narrative story of his life we’re gonna hear about Abraham through the rest of the Bible. We know that the son of promise that Abraham and Sarah had was named Isaac and we’ve been traveling through that story. Now Isaac has a wife. Her name is Rebekah and they have subsequently had twin boys, Esau and Jacob. And very quickly in the narrative, they’re grown men. Esau is a hunter and an outdoorsman, and Jacob sticks more close to home. And the Bible basically tell is Esau is kinda the favorite of his dad Isaac because he’s kind of a man’s man, whereas Rebekah loves Jacob, more of a mama’s boy. And that’s actually going to factor in as we continue the journey as we read what we read today. And we see that Isaac and Rebekah, their family has settled near a place called Gerar. And that place exists as old as it is. It has been identified by archaeologists. I’ve walked that place. It’s…it’s really never been excavated into kind of a place you can visit and make some sense of, but there are ancient ruins just sitting there and it’s still a place where shepherds care for their sheep. But it’s pretty interesting that when Isaac gets there, he meets King Abimelech and…and says that his wife Rebekah is actually not his wife, she’s his sister. It’s not until Abimelech sees Isaac caressing his wife Rebekah that it comes out that she’s married Isaac. And when Isaacs pressed on why he lied like that he said he was afraid for his life. The interesting thing is that his dad did the same thing in the same city to the same king. So, there is a little bit of trickery in the family line and that also comes into play as the story goes forward.

And then we flip over into the book of Proverbs and once again two sentences give us an orientation and context for how to live. “Don’t be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and turn away from evil.” So, that…those…those are the instructions. And we could say, yeah that's…to some degree that's…that’s wisdom that is known. We know we’re supposed to turn away from evil. We know wer’e supposed to fear the Lord. It’s not a matter of whether or not we know or understand this, it’s a matter of whether or not we pay attention and are aware and live into this. But those are the instructions. And then the next sentence sort of incentivizes the behavior. We get to see what the promised outcome of living this way will be. So, let’s read this whole thing again. “Don’t be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and turn away from evil. This will be healing for your body and strengthening for your bones.” If the Bible is telling us the truth, and I believe it is, then this is something that we should know. There is a reason to live this way. And, so, let’s meditate on that as we move through our day.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word. Every day it comes washing into our lives. Every day there is something we need to know. Every day there is something for us to be planted into our hearts. And, so, Holy Spirit come and do just that. Plant this in the soil of our hearts. We pray this in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Announcements:

dailyaudiobible.com is home base and that is where you find out what’s going on around here. If you’re using the Daily Audio Bible app, which you can get free at any…wherever you…wherever your app store is you can access all these things from within the app as well. So, certainly check them out.

Check out the Daily Audio Bible Shop. In the Daily Audio Bible Shop you’ll find our Windfarm coffee and tea. And, so, here’s the deal. I am a bit…a bit…a novice coffee snob and I am also a tea drinker and it wasn’t too long in my Daily Audio Bible journey of showing up every morning, every single day behind the microphone preparing and reading the Scriptures that I realized, yeah, my morning coffee is a part of this story every single day. And I love coffee. And I love all the different ways of roasting coffee. All of this kind of stuff. It’s been well over a decade now that we began roasting our own coffee varietals and importing our own boutique teas because when we’re looking for something for the community here it’s something that will take this journey this relationship with the Scriptures further. And it might be like…well…coffee doesn’t exactly feed my spirituality. And I could say that too but I could also say but it is a part of my every day routine. It is a part of the rhythm, and it is associated with the Scriptures because it’s something that I do with the Scriptures every day. I mean, just to my left here is my cup of coffee. And so, we just started thinking, what if we could roast fresher? What if we could ship quicker? What if we could bring a really superior experience to something that people do every day anyway and then tie that to the rhythm that we have each and every day step-by-step day by day through the Scriptures. And, so, Windfarm coffee and tea was born, which is something that you can find in the Daily Audio Bible Shop. We even have a coffee and tea club. We roast coffee fresh, import the tea and send it out to everyone who has subscribed to it. As much coffee as you want, whether it’s a bag or several bags for the month. We ship it out once per month at the end of the month fresh roasted so that it arrives fresh and ready to go to you. And we just thought, what if we can make something superior, but something that everybody is likely to participate in on a daily basis anyway? And So often we’re going through drive throughs getting our five dollar cups of coffee a day. What if…what if we could bring something better and what if that little bit of margin could just be a little bit of help to keeping the servers spinning every day, keeping the lights on every day. And, so, Windfarm was born. And Windfarm, I think it’s still a cool name. But it’s a name that comes from the book of Ezekiel actually. The prophet Ezekiel…there’s a story in that book. We’ll get to it obviously before this year’s over. But he’s looking out over a valley of dry bones, a battle had happened there. And, so, the carcasses, the bodies had just been left there where they fell, and they had become skeletons. And God asked the prophet if they could live again. And Ezekiel said only the Lord would know something like that. And then the Lord instructed the prophet Ezekiel to call to the four winds, the breath of life, and he called to the four winds, the breath of life, and an army came back from the dead. It’s one of my…one of my favorite Bible stories. But then I realized we are constantly calling out to God. We may not be calling out to the four winds, but we are constantly calling to God on behalf of one another. We are constantly rejoicing in the Lord for what He is doing and what He has yet to do in our lives. And I just started thinking, what if that prayer is like a spiritual windfarm. We are constantly calling life into places that need life. And, so, that’s how our Windfarm coffee and tea was born. And you can…you can find it all the different varieties or have it shipped to you every month, just go into the Daily Audio Bible Shop and look for coffee and tea and you’ll find it there.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hi, I’m Angie from Texas. I’m new to the DAB family and even though I’ve been a Christian since I was 16 years old, I’m 51, just recently my faith has changed into something deeper and more connected to the Lord. Has…something has shifted and changed. My son was…my son is 32 years old and on December…mid-December he was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer. He’s had surgery, had most of his colon removed and he’s going to go on, once he heals, onto chemo. He was given a certain amount of time, but I know, we know that he will be healed. I ask the community to pray for him.

Hello this is Paul from Wales happy new year. Wonderful to have done another year with you all as a family. My real message is for the man that I’ve run over the past few days and the prayers have been short…shared. There’s no excuse for abusing your family. It’s been on my heart. I’ve wrestled with it for the past couple of days, that a man ringing up with suicidal thoughts and depression and asking for prayer. And how do we be real and how do we speak in love? So, I turn to the scriptures. Be watchful, stand firm in the faith. Act like men. Be strong. Let all that you do be done in love. 1 Corinthians 13. When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways. 1 Timothy 5. But if any one does not provide for his relatives and especially for members of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever. 1 Timothy 4. Let no one despise you for your youth but set the believers as an example in speech and conduct and love and faith and purity. I’m not a perfect man, far from it. I lost my temper New Year’s Eve. My daughter recently lost a baby. And I let things get on top of me and I shouted. And I screamed in an empty house. But we’re called to be men and men of faith and we’re…we’re called to act like men and do everything that we can in love. We will make mistakes, but brothers join me this year in pursuing Jesus heart.

Good morning Brian good morning DABbers it is Florida Charlie Oscar Pappa. I just wanna say welcome to 2022. I completed another year. I’ve been a DABber Brian for approximately 6-7 years now and it’s changed my life entirely. Not only have I grown spiritually, I’ve grown in my personal life. I’m also a Bible college student and listening to the Bible and reading the Bible and hearing your commentary and reading commentary. it just…it…it gives you a threefold strand spiritually and I just want to say thank you Brian for what you do. The people that call in and pray, continue to call in and pray. We are people that are praying for you. We might not all call…call your name or say your name but we are praying for you. If you have a need, if you have any requests call in. And then also __ sow into this ministry. Ephesians talks about if a man, if someone sow’ into you your spiritual, what is it is for us to sow our…sow are natural. Amen? So, let’s continue to pray for each other, support each other, and help each other, especially in this year coming because 2022 is gonna be a great year for Christ. Amen? So, you all have a blessed one and take care. Bye-bye. This is Florida Charlie Oscar Pappa.

Hi, this message is for the caller who called in on December 9th talking about how you had placed your mother in a memory support facility. I’m sorry. I know that I played…prayed for you right before and I just cannot recall you guy’s name. This is Reba the nurse from Nebraska. I work at a Mary memory support facility and I also, I too had to place my father in the very facility that I am now working at because I had been up for 36 hours straight as he went into delirium and then after that we just never could get back him back to baseline. So, let me just pray for you and just pray for the facility and pay for the people that are taking care of your mom and pray for your mom. Heavenly Father I just thank You and praise You so much for just Your hand upon us and our choices that with the infinite possibilities of what we can do - time and skills and things given to us Father. You work Your will for those who love You and who serve You. Father I just pray for this gal. I pray for her mother. I ask that You just bless her with caregivers who are…just who will walk with her as her mind changes. Father I just pray for her that You would give her the stability that she needs, that she would have good health Father, that she would have no falls, that she would just in the in the essence of dementia Father live the fullest life that she can in this facility Father. I pray for the caregivers. I ask that You give them insight. I ask that You give them guidance. I ask You give them knowledge to care for her both in mind body. And Father what we know…

Hello Eleanor, this is Greg from Bothell WA and I heard you on January 3rd asking for prayer. Eleanor you are a child of God, you’re a Princess in the Kingdom of God and you have no reason to believe that God can’t make you, sanctify you and make you holy and help you take those thoughts captive to His obedience. Just press into Him. I love you and I want you to know that none of us are good parents in ourselves. None of us are good people in ourselves, that Lord Jesus is the one that allows us to step into those roles that we need to be in. I want to encourage you to keep listening and keep praying for others and we will be praying for you. I’ll be praying for you. Lord Jesus I just pray for Eleanor right now that she would…she would feel Your comfort and presence in her life, that she would know that You have her, and that in Your care and her children in Your care. I rebuke in the name of Jesus the spirit of suicide and I cover her in the blood of Jesus, that no weapon formed against her will prosper but that she will see her glory in her life start to manifest in new in mighty ways and Jesus’ name. I love you, Eleanor. It’s OK to be afraid sometimes. But fear your Lord Jesus and not those other things that come to your mind. Cast those on Him and He will care for you. He’ll take care of you and your children. Amen.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Tuesday January 11, 2022 (NIV)

Genesis 24:52-26:16

52 When Abraham’s servant heard their words, he bowed to the ground before the Lord. 53 Then he brought out objects of silver and gold, and garments, and gave them to Rebekah. He also gave precious gifts to her brother and her mother. 54 Then he and the men with him ate and drank and spent the night.

When they got up in the morning, he said, “Send me to my master.”

55 But her brother and mother said, “Let the girl stay with us for about ten days. Then she[a] can go.”

56 But he responded to them, “Do not delay me, since the Lord has made my journey a success. Send me away so that I may go to my master.”

57 So they said, “Let’s call the girl and ask her opinion.”[b]

58 They called Rebekah and said to her, “Will you go with this man?”

She replied, “I will go.” 59 So they sent away their sister Rebekah with the one who had nursed and raised her,[c](A) and Abraham’s servant and his men.

60 They blessed Rebekah, saying to her:

Our sister, may you become
thousands upon ten thousands.(B)
May your offspring possess
the city gates of their[d] enemies.(C)

61 Then Rebekah and her female servants got up, mounted the camels, and followed the man. So the servant took Rebekah and left.

62 Now Isaac was returning from Beer-lahai-roi,[e](D) for he was living in the Negev region. 63 In the early evening Isaac went out to walk[f] in the field, and looking up he saw camels coming. 64 Rebekah looked up, and when she saw Isaac, she got down from her camel 65 and asked the servant, “Who is that man in the field coming to meet us?”

The servant answered, “It is my master.” So she took her veil and covered herself. 66 Then the servant told Isaac everything he had done.

67 And Isaac brought her into the tent of his mother Sarah and took Rebekah to be his wife. Isaac loved her, and he was comforted after his mother’s death.(E)

Abraham’s Other Wife and Sons

25 Abraham had taken[g] another wife, whose name was Keturah,(F) and she bore him Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah. Jokshan fathered Sheba and Dedan. Dedan’s sons were the Asshurim, Letushim, and Leummim. And Midian’s sons were Ephah, Epher, Hanoch, Abida, and Eldaah. All these were sons of Keturah. Abraham gave everything he owned to Isaac.(G) But Abraham gave gifts to the sons of his concubines, and while he was still alive he sent them eastward, away from his son Isaac, to the land of the East.(H)

Abraham’s Death

This is the length of Abraham’s life:[h] 175 years. He took his last breath and died at a good old age,(I) old and contented,[i] and he was gathered to his people.(J) His sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Machpelah(K) near Mamre, in the field of Ephron son of Zohar the Hethite. 10 This was the field that Abraham bought from the Hethites.(L) Abraham was buried there with his wife Sarah. 11 After Abraham’s death, God blessed his son Isaac, who lived near Beer-lahai-roi.(M)

Ishmael’s Family Records

12 These are the family records(N) of Abraham’s son Ishmael,(O) whom Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah’s slave, bore to Abraham. 13 These are the names of Ishmael’s sons; their names according to the family records are Nebaioth, Ishmael’s firstborn, then Kedar, Adbeel, Mibsam, 14 Mishma, Dumah, Massa, 15 Hadad, Tema, Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah. 16 These are Ishmael’s sons, and these are their names by their settlements and encampments: twelve leaders[j](P) of their clans.[k] 17 This is the length[l] of Ishmael’s life: 137 years. He took his last breath and died, and was gathered to his people. 18 And they[m] settled from Havilah to Shur, which is opposite Egypt as you go toward Asshur.[n] He[o] stayed near[p] all his relatives.(Q)

The Birth of Jacob and Esau

19 These are the family records of Isaac son of Abraham. Abraham fathered Isaac.(R) 20 Isaac was forty years old when he took as his wife Rebekah(S) daughter of Bethuel the Aramean from Paddan-aram(T) and sister of Laban the Aramean.(U) 21 Isaac prayed to the Lord on behalf of his wife because she was childless.(V) The Lord was receptive to his prayer, and his wife Rebekah conceived.(W) 22 But the children inside her struggled with each other, and she said, “Why is this happening to me?” [q] So she went to inquire of the Lord.(X) 23 And the Lord said to her:

Two nations are in your womb;
two peoples will come from you and be separated.
One people will be stronger than the other,(Y)
and the older will serve the younger.(Z)

24 When her time came to give birth, there were indeed twins in her womb. 25 The first one came out red-looking,[r] covered with hair[s] like a fur coat, and they named him Esau.(AA) 26 After this, his brother came out grasping Esau’s heel with his hand.(AB) So he was named Jacob.[t](AC) Isaac was sixty years old when they were born.

Esau Sells His Birthright

27 When the boys grew up, Esau became an expert hunter, an outdoorsman,[u] but Jacob was a quiet man who stayed at home.[v] 28 Isaac loved Esau because he had a taste for wild game, but Rebekah loved Jacob.(AD)

29 Once when Jacob was cooking a stew, Esau came in from the field exhausted. 30 He said to Jacob, “Let me eat some of that red stuff, because I’m exhausted.” That is why he was also named Edom.[w]

31 Jacob replied, “First sell me your birthright.”

32 “Look,” said Esau, “I’m about to die, so what good is a birthright to me?”

33 Jacob said, “Swear to me first.” So he swore to Jacob and sold his birthright to him. 34 Then Jacob gave bread and lentil stew to Esau; he ate, drank, got up, and went away. So Esau despised his birthright.(AE)

The Promise Reaffirmed to Isaac

26 There was another famine in the land in addition to the one that had occurred in Abraham’s time.(AF) And Isaac went to Abimelech, king of the Philistines, at Gerar.(AG) The Lord appeared to him and said, “Do not go down to Egypt. Live in the land that I tell you about; stay in this land as an alien, and I will be with you and bless you.(AH) For I will give all these lands to you and your offspring,(AI) and I will confirm the oath that I swore to your father Abraham.(AJ) I will make your offspring as numerous as the stars of the sky, I will give your offspring all these lands, and all the nations of the earth will be blessed[x] by your offspring,(AK) because Abraham listened to me and kept my mandate, my commands, my statutes, and my instructions.”(AL) So Isaac settled in Gerar.

Isaac’s Deception

When the men of the place asked about his wife, he said, “She is my sister,”(AM) for he was afraid to say “my wife,” thinking,(AN) “The men of the place will kill me on account of Rebekah, for she is a beautiful woman.”(AO) When Isaac had been there for some time, Abimelech king of the Philistines looked down from the window and was surprised to see[y] Isaac caressing his wife Rebekah.

Abimelech sent for Isaac and said, “So she is really your wife! How could you say, ‘She is my sister’?”

Isaac answered him, “Because I thought I might die on account of her.”

10 Then Abimelech said, “What have you done to us? One of the people could easily have slept with your wife, and you would have brought guilt on us.”(AP) 11 So Abimelech warned all the people, “Whoever harms this man or his wife will certainly be put to death.”

Conflicts over Wells

12 Isaac sowed seed in that land, and in that year he reaped[z] a hundred times what was sown. The Lord blessed him,(AQ) 13 and the man became rich and kept getting richer until he was very wealthy. 14 He had flocks of sheep, herds of cattle, and many slaves, and the Philistines were envious of him. 15 Philistines stopped up all the wells that his father’s servants had dug in the days of his father Abraham,(AR) filling them with dirt. 16 And Abimelech said to Isaac, “Leave us, for you are much too powerful for us.”[aa]

Matthew 8:18-34

The Cost of Following Jesus

18 When Jesus saw a large crowd[a](A) around him, he gave the order to go to the other side of the sea. 19 A scribe approached him and said,(B) “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.”

20 Jesus told him, “Foxes have dens, and birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man(C) has no place to lay his head.”

21 “Lord,” another of his disciples said, “first let me go bury my father.”

22 But Jesus told him, “Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead.”

Wind and Waves Obey Jesus

23 As he got into the boat,(D) his disciples(E) followed him. 24 Suddenly, a violent storm arose on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by the waves—but Jesus kept sleeping. 25 So the disciples came and woke him up, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to die!”

26 He said to them, “Why are you afraid, you of little faith?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the sea,(F) and there was a great calm.

27 The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the sea obey(G) him!”

Demons Driven Out by Jesus

28 When he had come to the other side,(H) to the region of the Gadarenes,[b] two demon-possessed men met him as they came out of the tombs. They were so violent that no one could pass that way. 29 Suddenly they shouted, “What do you have to do with us,[c] Son of God? Have you come here to torment us before the time?” (I)

30 A long way off from them, a large herd of pigs was feeding. 31 “If you drive us out,” the demons begged him, “send us into the herd of pigs.”

32 “Go!” he told them. So when they had come out, they entered the pigs, and the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea and perished in the water. 33 Then the men who tended them fled. They went into the city and reported everything, especially what had happened to those who were demon-possessed. 34 At that, the whole town went out to meet Jesus. When they saw him, they begged him to leave their region.(J)

Psalm 10:1-15

Psalm 10

Need for God’s Justice

Lord,[a][b] why do you stand so far away?(A)
Why do you hide in times of trouble?(B)
In arrogance the wicked relentlessly pursue their victims;
let them be caught in the schemes they have devised.(C)

For the wicked one boasts about his own cravings;(D)
the one who is greedy curses[c] and despises the Lord.(E)
In all his scheming,
the wicked person arrogantly thinks,[d]
“There’s no accountability,
since there’s no God.”(F)
His ways are always secure;[e]
your lofty judgments have no effect on him;[f]
he scoffs at all his adversaries.(G)
He says to himself, “I will never be moved—
from generation to generation I will be without calamity.”(H)
Cursing, deceit, and violence fill his mouth;
trouble and malice are under his tongue.(I)
He waits in ambush near settlements;(J)
he kills the innocent in secret places.
His eyes are on the lookout for the helpless;(K)
he lurks in secret like a lion in a thicket.
He lurks in order to seize a victim;
he seizes a victim and drags him in his net.
10 So he is oppressed and beaten down;
helpless people fall because of the wicked one’s strength.(L)
11 He says to himself, “God has forgotten;
he hides his face and will never see.”(M)

12 Rise up, Lord God! Lift up your hand.(N)
Do not forget the oppressed.(O)
13 Why has the wicked person despised God?
He says to himself, “You will not demand an account.”(P)
14 But you yourself have seen trouble and grief,
observing it in order to take the matter into your hands.(Q)
The helpless one entrusts himself to you;
you are a helper of the fatherless.(R)
15 Break the arm of the wicked, evil person,(S)
until you look for his wickedness,
but it can’t be found.(T)

Genesis 23:1-24:51, Matthew 8:1-17, Psalm 9:13-20, Proverbs 3:1-6

Today is the 10th day of January, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian and I guess that we have made it about 1/3 of the way through the first month of the year. So, well done on making it through a week and ½, step-by-step day-by-day. This is how we will work our way through the entire journey and reach our destination at the end of the year. So, this week we are reading from the Christian Standard Bible and picking up where we left off yesterday, Genesis chapter 23 verse 1, through 24 verse 51.

Commentary:

Okay, so like we were talking about at the beginning, we are one third of the way through the first month of the year. So, we’re a week and ½ into our journey and we have met a lot of people already and there’s a lot of people that we have yet to me and so it’s really easy to come through, like these are sort of disembodied stories, like, like the book of Genesis that we’re going through like, all of these stories are separate stories when in fact we’re being led somewhere. So, from time to time we’ll pause and reflect back and tie the story together. Basically, in this first week and ½ in the book of Genesis we’ve covered over a thousand years of time and traveled a thousand miles. So, basically when we began the journey a week and a half ago, we began to hear the origin story and how things got the way that they are and then we followed along the story of Adam and Eve and their offspring and the spiral downward as mankind used its knowledge of good and evil to attempt to become its own sovereign. This leads us to a place where there is only evil among people, which leads to a flood and we meet this person named Noah which is a reset. We follow that story and then we met a man named Abram. Now, that his name has been changed to Abraham we know who he is and it’s his family, this promised offspring, numerous as the sands on the seashore, that we will be traveling with the rest of the way. So, in today’s reading Sarah, Abraham’s wife dies and she is buried in the cave of Machpelah which is a place and actual place, even until today. So, Abraham buys this cave to bury his dead in and we watch kind of this ancient negotiation taking place, this burial cave it seems to be the first piece of property actually owned by Abraham, even though the Lord has promised him all of the land. And after Sarah’s death, Abraham sees that it’s about time to be thinking about a wife for the son of promise, Isaac. So, he sends his servant back to his family where we meet Rebecca. So, we use this time for a little pause and a little reflection back because now we are moving into the next generation. Abraham, and now we’re moving into the generation of Isaac. And just as a heads up, we’ll then move into the generation of Jacob, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. God identifies himself many times this way, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. These aren’t just random righteous people, Abraham is the patriarch, Isaac is the son, Jacob is the grandson, we’re moving through generations in the same story. And so, hopefully that gives us a little bit of context. Then if we move to the last thing that we read today in the book of Proverbs, and we have one sentence that covers two verses that pretty much give us a roadmap or a posture for how to live life. Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not rely on your own understanding. In all your ways know him and he will make your paths straight. We’re basically being told that we don’t know all that we think that we know. And if that is all we are leaning on then there is most certainly a ceiling. But we also have the option of trusting the Lord with all of our heart, which means trusting God beyond what we think we know about Him or anything else. The Christian standard Bible, what we’re reading from this week say’s in all your ways know Him. Other translations say in all your ways acknowledge Him and He will make your paths straight. And certainly, we understand the distinction metaphorically between a straight path and a crooked path and the truth probably if we’re being honest is that we’re quite familiar with what a crooked path looks like, which is why we would desire a straight path. If we want to walk a straight path then we’re shown how, trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not rely on your own understanding. In all your ways know Him and He will make your paths straight. So, a straight path is made by the Lord. He will make your paths straight. We can’t make a straight path for ourselves. If we hadn’t figured that out by now. But there is a way, trust in the Lord with all your heart.

Prayer:

And so, Father, we invite Your Holy Spirit into that. It would be easy enough for us to simply declare we do; we do trust you Lord with all of our heart. When the truth is there are probably many areas of life that we don’t. We invite Your Holy Spirit to begin to reveal these things to us. Show us when we’re not trusting You with all of our hearts and You have given us reactions in our bodies that give us indications about this, things like anxiety that can be crippling or any of the triggers of our lives. It’s actually pretty easy for us to differentiate when we are trusting You with all of our heart and when we are not. We are usually just not paying enough attention. So, in this year when we are paying attention to awareness and becoming aware of what is going on inside of us and around us, we invite Your Holy Spirit into this: what are the areas in our lives that we are not trusting you? And Holy Spirit, come, comforter, come to us, reveal these things to us that we might fully trust You more and more each day we pray in the name of Jesus, we ask. Amen.

Announcements:

dailyaudiobible.com that is home base, it’s the website, it’s where you find out what’s going on around here and as I say most every day can do that in the app as well. And if you don’t have the app then check it out at your app store whatever device that you have but the app has some features that are really, really important. For example, you can check off the days that you are listening to, find out the days you may or may not have missed. But as these days accumulate and as we check the boxes and as we move through the Scriptures into the different sections of the Bible every time that we complete a section we get a badge, we get awarded, we get that and that stays in our account there we go back and see the different sections of the Bible that we’ve been a part of and can see that we are making progress and see how far into the Scriptures that we are, so definitely check out the Daily Audio Bible app.

If you want to partner with the Daily Audio Bible, thank you, thank you, humbly. We couldn’t do this if we didn’t do this together and so thank you. There is a link on the homepage at dailyaudiobible.com. If you’re using the app, you can press the Give button in the upper right-hand corner or the mailing address is P.O. Box 1996 Springhill, Tennessee 37174.

And as always if you have a prayer request or encouragement, you can hit the Hotline button in the app, the little red button up at the top, looks like a Hotline, hard to miss or you can dial 877-942-4253.

And that’s it for today, I’m Brian, I love you and I’ll be waiting for you here tomorrow.

Prayer and Encouragements:

Hey everyone, it’s Margo in Liberia. And I try to remember each year to phone in and just say a prayer for the new year because I just think it’s so important at the beginning of each year to orientate ourselves towards the will of God in our lives and towards using our lives for glorifying Him. So, Father I pray for each one of us as we are listeners of the DAB. I pray that You would continue to sanctify us, make us more like you. Help us to grow into Your image and to spread the fragrance of Christ wherever we go. I want to pray for joy and peace and happiness for us this year, sure, because I know I want those things but more than that I pray that we would use our lives to glorify You. That we will wake each day remembering how Holy You are and what You’ve done for us and the fact that we are saved by You. Father, help us to serve You and love You and Honor You with every bit of our strength. That there would be nothing in our lives that is more important than You. Help us to know the truth, to not be deceived, to not be desensitized by the things we see in the world, to believe in lies that are told to us by the world or even by our brothers and sisters. Father, please help us to love You more every day and this year would just be the start of more and more years where we devote ourselves to serving You and loving You and glorifying Your name. Let us be truly Your instruments. We love You. In Jesus name I pray. Amen. Love you guys.

Good evening Daily Audio Bible, this is Deb from Michigan. I am calling in to just say thank you, so much for all the encouragement I’ve been hearing and the prayer requests that I’ve also continued to hear. The thread of hope on this line is immense. And for as much as there is so much tragedy in this world right now, there is still hope. And I hear it from all of you who call in to encourage and pray for one another and that is so huge. We are not alone, God is faithful, His mercies are new every morning. And so, I just wanted to say thank you to you guys. I want to shout out especially to the gal, the sweet sister who was encouraging us about the break up she just went through and how God was so kind to her by allowing that person to walk away because He knew that she wouldn’t. I so identified with that because I literally went through the very same thing right before Christmas and I had even prayed that God would take the scenario out of my life because I knew I loved so deeply that I would not walk away myself, so He was so good and kind to me to do that. And I am the better person and he is a better person too. So, I just wanted to encourage you all and say thank you again for being here. Love you.

Hi, this is Victorious Soldier, want to say Happy New Year and glad to be able to start all over again with our journey. I wanted to pray for Man of Wrath, I want to cover him and his family. I just wanted to be an encouragement for the fact that when you make mistakes, don’t worry about them. But God knows, He gave us an advocate with the Father that if we do sin that He can ask for forgiveness and God is merciful. God sees the sorrow in your heart for not sinning against him. Lord, You continue to touch Man of Wrath, he wants to be a good father, he wants to be the man you called him to be. We ask that You crown his head with the knowledge, You direct him and keep him. In the mighty name of Jesus. We ask that You touch Elenore, I want to pray for her and her family and her young children. And Lord, You have Your way, we ask You to touch that family, You touch that marriage. You have Your way. You be in the midst, Father. You help them to come together and to laugh together and just begin to praise God for all the things they have. Some young families wish they had a baby but ya’ll have a baby and a marriage and let God, ask God to come in and make it work. God can do exceedingly and abundantly above all we ask all those things. I wanna pray for DABers also who have COVID, I wanna pray that they be healed and that it doesn’t hinder and God would open doors that no man could close. In the name of Jesus. Lord, You have Your way. In the name of Jesus. Thank you Lord for China, thank You Lord for Brian. Thank You, Lord for 2022, we ask that You bring life and favor to all your DABers.

Praise God for this ministry, I praise God for everyone who listens each day, I thank God for allowing me to find this app, I thank God for the person who suggested the app. I am grateful what God is doing and the life of myself and my family. And, I’m so grateful for the word of God that is being spoken each day. I thank God for, we’re in day four. And I’m just blessed to be apart of what God is saying through this ministry. God Bless you all who are listening.

Whether it’s with Brian or Jill and China or with Ezekiel. And take this time, take a deep breath, sit down with your dearest heavenly Father, your best friend. If you’ve never invited him in, to be born again, invite Him, invite Him to come in, welcome him to come into your life. He knocks at the door of your heart, open that door, invite Him to be your best friend. And sit with him, let him put his big, strong arms around you. Trust in His word. Trust Him this day, this 5th day of January 2022. And just lean against his breast as He holds you and let His word wash over you and cleanse you for this day. Don’t just know about Him, know Him. I pray this for you my dearest friends. Be His best friend and let him …

Hey Daily Audio Bible this is John from Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. I hope you’re doing well, Happy New Year. It is the 5th of January and I wanted to call in to encourage anyone new or anyone returning to the Daily Audio Bible. Whether this is your first time going through the Daily Audio Bible together, congratulations on making that decision or your second, third, fourth, fifth, maybe 17th year, whatever the case might be or for anyone that’s started before but never finished that was me, years ago, I’ve been listening since 2012, wasn’t able to really complete each year. I’d get about halfway through the year and fall behind and then get frustrated and what I should’ve done was listen to the advice of people a long ago that said, if you miss a day don’t worry about it, just pick up on the day that you’re on, just keep going forward to just take another step, you’re in God’s word it’s gonna be okay. So, my encouragement to you is just take a day at a time. And don’t worry if you get behind and I just keep on going. You’re around thousands and thousands of people around the world that are going on this journey together and probably thinking the same thing. So, I wanted to encourage you, I wanted to pray for Brian as well. Heavenly Father, thank You so much for this Community. Thank You, that we can come around the Global Campfire each and every day, day-by-day, step-by-step. And yes, on the fifth day of January we can turnaround on this journey that we’re on and we can look at the land behind us. We can look in the other direction, we can see the great deep that we’re going into and we’re just so thankful that you’re gonna be there with us and guiding us Jesus. Thank You for the transformation that Your making in us through Your word. That’s what we are here for Lord Jesus, to hear Your word and to have it change and transform our lives, Father God. Thank You so much for Brian, Lord Jesus for his faithfulness for his dedication and his loyalty and commitment to You. We pray in Jesus name. Amen.

Genesis 23:1-24:51

Sarah’s Burial

23 Now Sarah lived 127 years; these were all the years of her life. Sarah died in Kiriath-arba (that is, Hebron(A)) in the land of Canaan, and Abraham went in to mourn for Sarah and to weep for her.

When Abraham got up from beside his dead wife, he spoke to the Hethites: “I am an alien residing among you.(B) Give me burial property among you so that I can bury my dead.”[a](C)

The Hethites replied to Abraham,[b] “Listen to us, my lord. You are a prince of God[c] among us. Bury your dead in our finest burial place.[d] None of us will withhold from you his burial place for burying your dead.”

Then Abraham rose and bowed down to the Hethites, the people of the land. He said to them, “If you are willing for me to bury my dead, listen to me and ask Ephron son of Zohar on my behalf to give me the cave of Machpelah that belongs to him; it is at the end of his field. Let him give it to me in your presence, for the full price, as burial property.”

10 Ephron was sitting among the Hethites. So in the hearing[e] of all the Hethites who came to the gate of his city,(D) Ephron the Hethite answered Abraham: 11 “No, my lord. Listen to me. I give you the field, and I give you the cave that is in it. I give it to you in the sight[f] of my people. Bury your dead.”

12 Abraham bowed down to the people of the land 13 and said to Ephron in the hearing of the people of the land, “Listen to me, if you please. Let me pay the price of the field. Accept it from me, and let me bury my dead there.”

14 Ephron answered Abraham and said to him, 15 “My lord, listen to me. Land worth four hundred shekels of silver(E)—what is that between you and me? Bury your dead.” 16 Abraham agreed with Ephron, and Abraham weighed out to Ephron the silver that he had agreed to in the hearing of the Hethites: four hundred standard shekels[g] of silver.(F) 17 So Ephron’s field(G) at Machpelah near Mamre—the field with its cave and all the trees anywhere within the boundaries of the field—became 18 Abraham’s possession in the sight of all the Hethites who came to the gate of his city. 19 After this, Abraham buried his wife Sarah in the cave of the field at Machpelah near Mamre (that is, Hebron) in the land of Canaan. 20 The field with its cave passed from the Hethites to Abraham(H) as burial property.

A Wife for Isaac

24 Abraham was now old, getting on in years,[h](I) and the Lord had blessed him in everything. Abraham said to his servant, the elder of his household who managed all he owned, “Place your hand under my thigh,(J) and I will have you swear by the Lord, God of heaven and God of earth, that you will not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites among whom I live,(K) but will go to my land and my family to take a wife for my son Isaac.”

The servant said to him, “Suppose the woman is unwilling to follow me to this land? Should I have your son go back to the land you came from?”

Abraham answered him, “Make sure that you don’t take my son back there. The Lord, the God of heaven,(L) who took me from my father’s house and from my native land,(M) who spoke to me and swore to me, ‘I will give this land to your offspring’[i](N)—he will send his angel before you,(O) and you can take a wife for my son from there. If the woman is unwilling to follow you, then you are free from this oath to me,(P) but don’t let my son go back there.” So the servant placed his hand under his master Abraham’s thigh and swore an oath to him concerning this matter.

10 The servant took ten of his master’s camels, and with all kinds of his master’s goods in hand, he went to Aram-naharaim, to Nahor’s town. 11 At evening, the time when women went out to draw water, he made the camels kneel beside a well outside the town.

12 Lord, God of my master Abraham,” he prayed, “make this happen for me today,(Q) and show kindness to my master Abraham. 13 I am standing here(R) at the spring where the daughters of the men of the town are coming out to draw water. 14 Let the girl to whom I say, ‘Please lower your water jug so that I may drink,’ and who responds, ‘Drink, and I’ll water your camels also’—let her be the one you have appointed for your servant Isaac. By this I will know that you have shown kindness to my master.”

15 Before he had finished speaking, there was Rebekah—daughter of Bethuel son of Milcah,(S) the wife of Abraham’s brother Nahor—coming with a jug on her shoulder. 16 Now the girl was very beautiful,(T) a virgin—no man had been intimate with her. She went down to the spring, filled her jug, and came up. 17 Then the servant ran to meet her and said, “Please let me have a little water from your jug.”

18 She replied, “Drink, my lord.” She quickly lowered her jug to her hand and gave him a drink. 19 When she had finished giving him a drink, she said, “I’ll also draw water for your camels until they have had enough to drink.”[j] 20 She quickly emptied her jug into the trough and hurried to the well again to draw water. She drew water for all his camels 21 while the man silently watched her to see whether or not the Lord had made his journey a success.

22 As the camels finished drinking, the man took a gold ring weighing half a shekel, and for her wrists two bracelets weighing ten shekels of gold. 23 “Whose daughter are you?” he asked. “Please tell me, is there room in your father’s house for us to spend the night?”

24 She answered him, “I am the daughter of Bethuel son of Milcah, whom she bore to Nahor.” 25 She also said to him, “We have plenty of straw and feed and a place to spend the night.”

26 Then the man knelt low, worshiped the Lord,(U) 27 and said, “Blessed be the Lord, the God of my master Abraham, who has not withheld his kindness and faithfulness from my master.(V) As for me, the Lord has led me on the journey to the house of my master’s relatives.”

28 The girl ran and told her mother’s household about these things. 29 Now Rebekah had a brother named Laban,(W) and Laban ran out to the man at the spring. 30 As soon as he had seen the ring and the bracelets on his sister’s wrists, and when he had heard his sister Rebekah’s words—“The man said this to me!”—he went to the man. He was standing there by the camels at the spring.

31 Laban said, “Come, you who are blessed by the Lord.(X) Why are you standing out here? I have prepared the house and a place for the camels.” 32 So the man came to the house, and the camels were unloaded.(Y) Straw and feed were given to the camels, and water was brought to wash his feet and the feet of the men with him.

33 A meal was set before him, but he said, “I will not eat until I have said what I have to say.”

So Laban said, “Please speak.”

34 “I am Abraham’s servant,” he said. 35 “The Lord has greatly blessed my master, and he has become rich. He has given him flocks and herds, silver and gold, male and female slaves, and camels and donkeys. 36 Sarah, my master’s wife, bore a son to my master in her[k] old age,(Z) and he has given him everything he owns.(AA) 37 My master put me under this oath: ‘You will not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites in whose land I live 38 but will go to my father’s family and to my clan to take a wife for my son.’ 39 But I said to my master, ‘Suppose the woman will not come back with me?’ 40 He said to me, ‘The Lord before whom I have walked(AB) will send his angel with you and make your journey a success, and you will take a wife for my son from my clan and from my father’s family. 41 Then you will be free from my oath if you go to my family and they do not give her to you—you will be free from my oath.’

42 “Today when I came to the spring, I prayed: Lord, God of my master Abraham, if only you will make my journey successful! 43 I am standing here at a spring. Let the young woman[l] who comes out to draw water, and I say to her, ‘Please let me drink a little water from your jug,’ 44 and who responds to me, ‘Drink, and I’ll draw water for your camels also’—let her be the woman the Lord has appointed for my master’s son.

45 “Before I had finished praying silently,(AC) there was Rebekah coming with her jug on her shoulder, and she went down to the spring and drew water. So I said to her, ‘Please let me have a drink.’ 46 She quickly lowered her jug from her shoulder and said, ‘Drink, and I’ll water your camels also.’ So I drank, and she also watered the camels. 47 Then I asked her, ‘Whose daughter are you?’ She responded, ‘The daughter of Bethuel son of Nahor, whom Milcah bore to him.’ So I put the ring on her nose(AD) and the bracelets on her wrists. 48 Then I knelt low, worshiped the Lord, and blessed the Lord, the God of my master Abraham, who guided me on the right way to take the granddaughter of my master’s brother for his son. 49 Now, if you are going to show kindness and faithfulness to my master,(AE) tell me; if not, tell me, and I will go elsewhere.”[m]

50 Laban and Bethuel answered, “This is from the Lord; we have no choice in the matter.[n](AF) 51 Rebekah is here in front of you. Take her and go, and let her be a wife for your master’s son, just as the Lord has spoken.”

Matthew 8:1-17

A Man Cleansed

When he came down from the mountain, large crowds(A) followed him. Right away(B) a man with leprosy[a] came up and knelt before him,(C) saying, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.”

Reaching out his hand, Jesus touched him, saying, “I am willing; be made clean.” Immediately his leprosy was cleansed. Then Jesus told him, “See that you don’t tell anyone;(D) but go, show yourself to the priest, and offer the gift that Moses commanded, as a testimony to them.”(E)

A Centurion’s Faith

When he entered Capernaum,(F) a centurion came to him, pleading with him, “Lord, my servant is lying at home paralyzed, in terrible agony.”

He said to him, “Am I to come and heal him?”[b]

“Lord,” the centurion replied, “I am not worthy to have you come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed.(G) For I too am a man under authority, having soldiers under my command.[c] I say to this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes; and to my servant, ‘Do this!’ and he does it.”

10 Hearing this, Jesus was amazed and said to those following him, “Truly I tell you, I have not found anyone in Israel with so great a faith. 11 I tell you that many will come from east and west to share the banquet[d] with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven.(H) 12 But the sons of the kingdom will be thrown into the outer darkness where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”(I) 13 Then Jesus told the centurion, “Go. As you have believed,(J) let it be done for you.” And his servant was healed that very moment.[e]

Healings at Capernaum

14 Jesus went into Peter’s house(K) and saw his mother-in-law lying in bed with a fever. 15 So he touched her hand, and the fever left her. Then she got up and began to serve him. 16 When evening came, they brought to him many who were demon-possessed. He drove out the spirits(L) with a word and healed all who were sick,(M) 17 so that what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled:

He himself took our weaknesses
and carried our diseases.[f](N)

Today is the 9th day of January welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I am Brian it is wonderful to be here with you today as we begin a brand-new week a fresh start, where we can take all that we’ve absorbed and all that’s been kinda worked into the soil of our lives through the Scriptures last week and live it. And the cool thing is that every new week is a fresh start. No matter how we may mess a week up, when we come to the beginning of a new week it’s a fresh start. So, this week we will read from the Christian Standard Bible. Of course, we will be picking up right where we left off, which will lead us back out into the book of Genesis. Today, chapters 20, 21, and 22.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word. And we thank You for bringing us through the threshold into a brand-new week and we embrace this week. We are on our way. And as we finish this week and move into the next week, we are establishing a rhythm. And You are speaking. The Scriptures are touching us, they’re orienting us, they’re giving us a north star, they’re giving us clarity and direction. And, so, we open ourselves to Your direction, to Your counsel, to Your leadership. We trust You. And as we trust You more and more, giving more and more of our control over we find that we are safe with You, and we find that there is no turning back because You are good. And, so, Holy Spirit, we invite You to lead and direct us in this brand-new week and we pray this in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hello, my DAB family this is Mary from Georgia. I just want to say how good it is to be back with you all for another year as we journey through God’s word together. I can’t wait to see where He takes us this year. I was listening on January 3rd, and I heard a sweet Mama call in asking for prayer her name is Eleanor. Eleanor, I want to speak to your heart. I will be praying for you. I know exactly how you feel. Oh, my goodness, exactly. Your story is my story. And I have three children who are not so small anymore but during their little years it was so hard, so hard for me not to be an angry, almost violent mom. And I just want to encourage you that God already saw this. He already saw you in all of your motherhood and everything that you do each day long before He gave you children. He loves you so much and He chose you to be the mother for these kids even though we don’t know what we’re doing, do we? But He saw it all and He’s not disappointed in you. He is so proud that you are trying so hard. And you’re gonna fail. We all fail as parents, every single day. But God picks us back up and He brushes us off just as we are His children, and He helps us keep going. So, I am praying for you sweet Eleanor, that God would sustain you through the very dark and scary times, that He would remove the fear and the dread that you have and that He would give you the grace to sustain.

Hey guys first time caller, Remorseful Sinner here. I’m calling for a prayer request because the enemy is attacking me big time. After this new year I started to throw away everything that was evil in my home like my tarot cards. I got involved in all of this witchcraft stuff after getting involved with a guy who was really into it. And then I got diagnosed with HPV and I’m just so sorry. I sinned against myself and against God after promising to be celibate. I was just so hurt When I found out my ex-husband was already dating somebody before our divorce was final. And…and it opened up doorways to things that are so wrong. And I identify with Sean 3:16 because of that. So, I am awaiting results for other SDV testing and I’m just so scared. And the enemy started attacking me again. Just like Man of Wrath. Today I was woman of wrath. And a history of…and a history of…of being very verbally abusive too. And…and it…and it just all came out and I was doing so good. So, please pray for me because I really need it. I came to…to…to my local church to confess to God and all the lights were out. Just scared…

Good morning DAB family this is Mountain Girl from New Mexico. First, I’d like to thank Brian for the beautiful benediction on December 31st that he prayed over all of us and spoke to us. I’m gonna print that out and say that. It was just beautiful, and I was so blessed by it and by this whole program. Looking forward to __ getting into 2022. I’d also like to pray for Eleanor. Father I…I pray for Eleanor and how she was just feeling like she’s a terrible mom. And I just pray Lord that You would fill her with Your joy and Your peace and Your energy and Your faith and Your love. And Lord may she go forward and just love her children well and show them the love of Christ. And may she find her value in who she is and You Lord. And I just pray Lord that she would be encouraged. I pray for Man of Wrath. And I pray for covering for his family. I pray for healing and restoration from verbal abuse. And I pray Lord that You would heal his family. I pray You would heal him. I pray that Your love would be shed abroad in his heart. And I just pray Lord for health and restoration for this family Lord. You know all the details. And I just pray for healing for Man of Wrath. I pray for healing for Eleanor. I pray for Sean 3:16. And I pray Lord for the mistake, for him in dealing with the mistake he says he made and dealing with the consequences of it that are crippling. And I pray Lord for deliverance. I pray for restoration and healing. And I pray Lord that through this trial he would come to love You and know You more and follow You more closely and cling to You. And I just pray for Your help Father whatever that may be that Your will would be done in his life.

Hey guys how you doing? This is Lazarus. Hoping to shake the dust of a really lousy 2021 off my sandals. I walked to a new village where there’s light and grace. Anyway, I’m calling today in response to the Man of Wrath and the situation that he finds himself in that he created. So, having been there, done that, been abusive, done all the wrong things, been addicted, done all that stuff I just offer a couple of words of broken wisdom. By broken I mean I’ve done it all, broken it all up. First of all, you have an amazing opportunity to have recognized where you are and fix it. Sounds easy but it takes…just takes every day. Just start focus on it. Second of all, I would change your name. It’s almost like you’re proud of your wrath. I would dump that really quickly my friend. Love you. Don’t take it as criticism. But if you’re man of light maybe that would be change some of yourself perception, some of your behaviors and make you a little…a little more effective as you try to recover. Because if you don’t pull your head out of rear end you’re gonna find yourself alone in the world like I have for the last six years and it’s ugly. So, take some advice from a guy who’s done it worse and harder than you and didn’t recognize the end of the road was coming quickly and smashed into the side of the mountain. There was no tunnel, there was no light. You have an opportunity, a rare opportunity to fix things. So, I encourage you to do that my friend. You…I hope you take this the way I intended it and use it to light your path. Anyway, love you all family. Pray for you every day. Pray for you Brian, Jill, everybody. God bless you all. Have a blessed 2022.

Hi DAB family this is Ausie Bear in Australia. I was just ringing up with a prayer request. My friend Robin was in hospital. This is her second day in hospital after being attacked by her brother. Her brother has schizophrenia, and something set him off yesterday morning, early yesterday morning and he attacked her. And, so, he’s been taking to the psychiatric facility in a town about 40 minutes away from us and she’s up in the hospital recovering from her injuries. So, this is the second time this has happened. And after the first time he was able to come home, which I think was a mistake. And…but she's…she’s hoping that he’s not able to come home again this time because it’s not safe for her. Like she’s in her 70s and he’s in his mid-50s. He’s a lot stronger than she is and…and yeah…she’s just a little woman. And, oh my gosh this is just such an awful situation. So, if you guys could pray for my friend Robin and for this whole situation, I would really appreciate it. Thanks guys. Love you. Bye.

Hi Daily Audio Bible family this is New Eyes in Chattanooga TN and I just heard a prayer request for a friend Eleanor who’s a new listener. And I’m sure that she’s going to get a lot of encouragement from this community because this is an awesome community. Eleanor you are immediately loved by this family of believers and prayer warriors. I want to encourage you and lift you up. My oldest child is 18 and parenting never stops. It is difficult but I will tell you this, that our Lord God gave you these children. He gave them to you because he needs you to have them, and you need them too. And He is the most perfect parent. He will love your children more than you ever can and He loves you more than anyone else in the world. He loves you so much. He knows you in and out. He knows exactly where you’re weak and exactly how He can help you and build you up. And do not worry about your children because He has them in the palm of His hand. He will always be their perfect parrot. You do not have to try to be perfect. You just talked to him. You keep talking to other people, reach out and tell people how hard it is. You will not be alone. There is always someone who will say I understand. So, I’m telling you right now I understand…

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Sunday January 9, 2022 (NIV)

Genesis 20-22

Sarah Rescued from Abimelech

20 From there Abraham traveled to the region of the Negev and settled between Kadesh and Shur. While he was staying in Gerar,(A) Abraham said about his wife Sarah, “She is my sister.”(B) So King Abimelech of Gerar had Sarah brought to him.

But God came to Abimelech in a dream by night and said to him, “You are about to die because of the woman you have taken, for she is a married woman.”[a]

Now Abimelech had not approached her, so he said, “Lord, would you destroy a nation even though it is innocent? Didn’t he himself say to me, ‘She is my sister’? And she herself said, ‘He is my brother.’ I did this with a clear conscience[b] and clean[c] hands.”

Then God said to him in the dream, “Yes, I know that you did this with a clear conscience.[d] I have also kept you from sinning against me. Therefore I have not let you touch her. Now return the man’s wife, for he is a prophet,(C) and he will pray for you and you will live. But if you do not return her, know that you will certainly die, you and all who are yours.”

Early in the morning Abimelech got up, called all his servants together, and personally[e] told them all these things, and the men were terrified.

Then Abimelech called Abraham in and said to him, “What have you done to us? How did I sin against you that you have brought such enormous guilt on me and on my kingdom? You have done things to me that should never be done.”(D) 10 Abimelech also asked Abraham, “What made you do this?”

11 Abraham replied, “I thought, ‘There is absolutely no fear of God in this place.(E) They will kill me because of my wife.’ 12 Besides, she really is my sister, the daughter of my father though not the daughter of my mother, and she became my wife. 13 So when God had me wander from my father’s house,(F) I said to her: Show your loyalty to me wherever we go and say about me, ‘He’s my brother.’”(G)

14 Then Abimelech took flocks and herds and male and female slaves, gave them to Abraham, and returned his wife Sarah to him. 15 Abimelech said, “Look, my land is before you.(H) Settle wherever you want.”[f] 16 And he said to Sarah, “Look, I am giving your brother one thousand pieces of silver. It is a verification of your honor[g] to all who are with you. You are fully vindicated.”

17 Then Abraham prayed to God,(I) and God healed Abimelech, his wife, and his female slaves so that they could bear children, 18 for the Lord had completely closed all the wombs in Abimelech’s household on account of Sarah, Abraham’s wife.

The Birth of Isaac

21 The Lord came to Sarah as he had said, and the Lord did for Sarah what he had promised.(J) Sarah became pregnant and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at the appointed time God had told him.(K) Abraham named his son who was born to him—the one Sarah bore to him—Isaac.(L) When his son Isaac was eight days old, Abraham circumcised him, as God had commanded him.(M) Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him.(N)

Sarah said, “God has made me laugh, and everyone who hears will laugh with me.”[h](O) She also said, “Who would have told Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have borne a son for him[i] in his old age.”

Hagar and Ishmael Sent Away

The child grew and was weaned, and Abraham held a great feast on the day Isaac was weaned. But Sarah saw the son mocking—the one Hagar the Egyptian had borne to Abraham.(P) 10 So she said to Abraham, “Drive out this slave with her son, for the son of this slave will not be a coheir with my son Isaac!” (Q)

11 This was very distressing to[j] Abraham because of his son. 12 But God said to Abraham, “Do not be distressed[k] about the boy and about your slave. Whatever Sarah says to you, listen to her, because your offspring will be traced through Isaac,(R) 13 and I will also make a nation of the slave’s son(S) because he is your offspring.”

14 Early in the morning Abraham got up, took bread and a waterskin, put them on Hagar’s shoulders, and sent her and the boy away. She left and wandered in the Wilderness of Beer-sheba. 15 When the water in the skin was gone, she left the boy under one of the bushes 16 and went and sat at a distance, about a bowshot away, for she said, “I can’t bear to watch the boy die!” While she sat at a distance, she[l] wept loudly.(T)

17 God heard the boy crying, and the[m] angel of God called to Hagar from heaven and said to her, “What’s wrong, Hagar? Don’t be afraid, for God has heard the boy crying from the place where he is. 18 Get up, help the boy up, and grasp his hand, for I will make him a great nation.” 19 Then God opened her eyes,(U) and she saw a well. So she went and filled the waterskin and gave the boy a drink. 20 God was with the boy, and he grew; he settled in the wilderness and became an archer. 21 He settled in the Wilderness of Paran, and his mother got a wife for him from the land of Egypt.

Abraham’s Covenant with Abimelech

22 At that time Abimelech, accompanied by Phicol the commander of his army,(V) said to Abraham, “God is with you in everything you do.(W) 23 Swear to me by God here and now, that you will not break an agreement with me or with my children and descendants. As I have been loyal to you, so you will be loyal to me and to the country where you are a resident alien.”

24 And Abraham said, “I swear it.” 25 But Abraham complained to Abimelech because of the well that Abimelech’s servants had seized.(X)

26 Abimelech replied, “I don’t know who did this thing. You didn’t report anything to me, so I hadn’t heard about it until today.”

27 Abraham took flocks and herds and gave them to Abimelech, and the two of them made a covenant.(Y) 28 Abraham separated seven ewe lambs from the flock. 29 And Abimelech said to Abraham, “Why have you separated these seven ewe lambs?”

30 He replied, “You are to accept the seven ewe lambs from me so that this act[n] will serve as my witness that I dug this well.” 31 Therefore that place was called Beer-sheba[o](Z) because it was there that the two of them swore an oath. 32 After they had made a covenant at Beer-sheba, Abimelech and Phicol, the commander of his army, left and returned to the land of the Philistines.

33 Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beer-sheba, and there he called on the name of the Lord, the Everlasting God.(AA) 34 And Abraham lived as an alien in the land of the Philistines for many days.

The Sacrifice of Isaac

22 After these things God tested Abraham(AB) and said to him, “Abraham!”

“Here I am,” he answered.

“Take your son,” he said, “your only son Isaac, whom you love,(AC) go to the land of Moriah,(AD) and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains I will tell you about.”

So Abraham got up early in the morning,(AE) saddled his donkey, and took with him two of his young men and his son Isaac. He split wood for a burnt offering and set out to go to the place God had told him about. On the third day(AF) Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance. Then Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey. The boy and I will go over there to worship; then we’ll come back to you.” Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and laid it on his son Isaac.(AG) In his hand he took the fire and the knife,(AH) and the two of them walked on together.

Then Isaac spoke to his father Abraham and said, “My father.”

And he replied, “Here I am, my son.”

Isaac said, “The fire and the wood are here, but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?”

Abraham answered, “God himself will provide[p](AI) the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” Then the two of them walked on together.

When they arrived at the place that God had told him about, Abraham built the altar there and arranged the wood. He bound his son Isaac[q] and placed him on the altar(AJ) on top of the wood. 10 Then Abraham reached out and took the knife to slaughter his son.

11 But the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven and said, “Abraham, Abraham!”

He replied, “Here I am.”

12 Then he said, “Do not lay a hand on the boy or do anything to him. For now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your only son from me.”(AK) 13 Abraham looked up and saw a ram[r] caught in the thicket by its horns. So Abraham went and took the ram and offered it as a burnt offering in place of his son. 14 And Abraham named that place The Lord Will Provide,[s] so today it is said, “It will be provided[t] on the Lord’s mountain.”

15 Then the angel of the Lord called to Abraham a second time from heaven 16 and said, “By myself I have sworn,”(AL) this is the Lord’s declaration: “Because you have done this thing and have not withheld your only son, 17 I will indeed bless you(AM) and make your offspring as numerous as the stars of the sky(AN) and the sand on the seashore.(AO) Your offspring will possess the city gates of their[u] enemies.(AP) 18 And all the nations of the earth will be blessed[v] by your offspring(AQ) because you have obeyed my command.”

19 Abraham went back to his young men, and they got up and went together to Beer-sheba. And Abraham settled in Beer-sheba.

Rebekah’s Family

20 Now after these things Abraham was told, “Milcah also has borne sons to your brother Nahor:(AR) 21 Uz his firstborn, his brother Buz, Kemuel the father of Aram, 22 Chesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph, and Bethuel.” 23 And Bethuel fathered Rebekah.(AS) Milcah bore these eight to Nahor, Abraham’s brother. 24 His concubine, whose name was Reumah, also bore Tebah, Gaham, Tahash, and Maacah.

The Two Foundations

24 “Therefore,(O) everyone who hears these words(P) of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain fell, the rivers rose, and the winds blew and pounded that house. Yet it didn’t collapse, because its foundation was on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and doesn’t act on them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. 27 The rain fell, the rivers rose, the winds blew and pounded that house, and it collapsed. It collapsed with a great crash.”

28 When Jesus had finished saying these things,(Q) the crowds were astonished at his teaching,(R) 29 because he was teaching them like one who had authority, and not like their scribes.

Genesis 18:16-19:38, Matthew 6:25-7:14, Psalm 8:1-9, Proverbs 2:6-15

Today is the eighth day of January, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian. It is wonderful to be here with you today as we reach the conclusion of our first full week of the year, has been a good week and it’s been a good first full week of the year. Lots going on, we’re trying to establish all these new rhythms in our lives. Well, we can see that the Bible is already speaking and touching the tender areas of our lives and speaking into those things that we need to hear. So, let’s dive in for today, we have been reading from the New International Version this week. Today, Genesis chapter 18 verse 16 through 19 verse 38.

Commentary:

Okay so, we need to go back into the book of Genesis here. What a disturbing story we have encountered in this first book of the Bible. A story that we would today call incest. Although the story is, generally speaking backward to the kinds of stories that we would hear. In this case, we have two young daughters and an older father, and the daughters have decided that they need to get their father drunk so that they could try to get pregnant by him, how did we get here and what are we supposed to make this. To even begin to try to unravel such a disturbing scene, we kind of need to go back to the beginning of the story that’s being told here. Abraham who we have begun to travel with this week and will continue to travel with, had a divine visitation, God had been hearing about what was going on in the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. He was going to check it out. Has a visit with Abraham, a meal is served, they’re about to leave, God sort of asks himself a rhetorical question. Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do? Abraham and God have now entered into a covenant, nothing is supposed to be withheld and so Abraham is told what the Lord intends to do, to go check out if the outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah has got any validity to it and then we have this long and quite beautiful scene actually that sets up the story that we are heading into, that ends up with two girls and their father in a cave trying to get pregnant. Abraham says some pretty straightforward kinds of things to God and I quote “will you sweep away the righteous with the wicked, what if there are 50 righteous people in the city, will you really sweep it away and not spare the place for the sake of the 50 righteous people in it, far be it from You to do such a thing, to kill the righteous with the wicked, treating the righteous and the wicked alike, far be it from You will You not the judge of all the earth do right”. So, I can easily in my own mind say I am way less of a man than Abraham. I read the Bible but you’re not gonna find any stories in the Bible that that I’m involved with. And so, Abraham is in covenant with God and so we guess, he has this type of intimacy that could speak to him. I can’t imagine speaking to God like that. But in many ways, this is important, this is part of the story. It’s an important part, it’s leading us to something. So, Abraham and God almost have a bit of a negotiation where, where Abraham is negotiating down the number of righteous people, the threshold for the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah as it were. So, Abraham keeps saying you know, if 50 people were there, what about 40 you know what about 30, what about 20, he keeps bringing the number down and God keeps responding the same way, if there are that many righteous people, I wouldn’t do that, I would do such a thing, I will relent, I will not destroy it. So, as readers what are we supposed to start getting the impression of? We’re supposed to start understanding that God is the judge of the world and is righteous and does only what is right and is perfect. He has no intention of destroying the wicked and the righteous together, the righteous will preserve everything, if they exist. As the story goes, they don’t exist, God goes to Lot in the city, Lot takes them into his home putting them under his protection. That’s an important thing in the culture at the time, if you bring somebody under your roof than they are in your care and must be respected, hospitality in this case is the important thing, is the understanding among people. The next thing we know they’re in Lot’s house, the house is surrounded by the young and old man who want these guys to come out for sexual relations. Lot basically goes and says, how could you do such a thing, I brought them under my roof, they’re under my protection. I have two virgin daughters let me send them out to you. And like in our modern world we’re like, yeah right, that’s a great idea yeah, I would do that, of course somebody knocks on my door that I don’t know but I realize they’re important and I bring them into my house and other people want those men, so I’ll give them China my daughter. I can’t imagine something like that, and you need to understand that you’re not supposed to, you’re not, like this is not a story that is supposed to make us feel good or comforted. This is a story that is supposed to make us feel disrupted and we are in the book of Genesis, we are a long way back in history, we are in a tribal time, we are also in a very patriarchal time in the world and in all the cultures. Whereas our current time in history, humanity has begun to move forward. So, even though there may be many patriarchal remnants in the world and there are and in just about every culture and there are, there aren’t too many cultures in the world where virgin daughters get thrown to an angry mob of males. Although the world is not devoid of that kind of atrocity even today. So, we can look at this and go, such antiquated old stories in such an old, un-relatable time but that’s not true. We have a massive human trafficking problem in the world. Massive atrocities happened to women. So, we can be mad at God that this kind of stories in the Bible when maybe we shouldn’t be looking down our nose at God, we should look at Lot and go, dude can’t even imagine what you’re doing here. What was God’s response in the situation? He blinded the mob, nobody had nonconsensual sex with anybody. They were blind they couldn’t even find the door, according to the Bible. I’m not saying that rape didn’t exist at that time and all kinds of atrocities didn’t exist at the time I’m just saying in this story, although Lot had offered his daughter’s, the power of God blinded the people keeping them from doing anything. And they’re working with Lot to get him out of the city and there’s all this kind of negotiation. Can’t go to the mountains, can I go to this little village I gotta get outta here, but I won’t survive. They hurry him out of town, and they run away, and Lot’s wife looks back and she’s caught up in the destruction and they continue to flee, and they end up living in this little cave. And so, let’s look at the lay of the land with the daughters here. Are they sitting in the cave in the fire glow going you know dad is a really handsome man and we should have sex with him? That’s not what’s happening here. These girls are in trouble, and they are trying to figure out how to navigate what is going to become of them. Their mother is dead, the man that these girls were betrothed to are dead. Their home is destroyed, they aren’t from around there, they came with Abraham from a land far, far away, they are foreigners in this land, and they are in a extremely patriarchal world. Their family line will be destroyed without an heir, their father has lost everything so he’s not going to be able to move into another city showing wealth and prosperity and making arrangements to introduce his daughters to suitable spouses and making that happen. He has nothing left, there’s no respect left. Lot can claim his daughters and protect his daughters. But he’s not gonna live forever. And if there just kinda wandering around this older man with some beautiful women, Lot could easily be killed, what would happen to the girls then? They’re most likely looking at a life of slavery or prostitution, what we would call human trafficking today. That’s the outlook for them, almost certainly if there isn’t a male heir. So, there in a situation where it’s like the only way is the wrong way. And it’s interesting because as the story reads in the book of Genesis after the encounter with God and Abraham negotiates the number of righteous people down and all that, the next day he gets up and goes and looks down over the valley and he sees all of the smoke from the destruction. So, he’s aware of this, why Lot and his daughters aren’t doing everything they can to navigate their way to wherever Abraham is, is a mystery. The daughters made a decision, two sons were born, one to each daughter. The Bible tells us that that is the origin story of the Moabites and the Ammonites. Did God tell the daughters to do this? That’s not in this story. Did God condone this or want this to happen? That’s not in this story either. The part that God plays in this story is that He will not destroy the just and righteous along with the wicked and evil, even to the point that we begin to understand that a small group of righteous people can preserve everything. And we don’t see God scheming in his master plan that these daughters are going to have sex with their father Lot. But we do see is that God goes down there, finds Lot and saves their lives. The things that happen after that are human choices, made by human people and it becomes clear we can make mess of things, even while we are being rescued, when we begin to take matters into our own hands. So, this gives us some things to ponder.

Prayer:

And so, Father, we invite Your Holy Spirit into that pondering, it’s pretty distraught, disruptive story with a lot of layers to it and we invite You to assist us in seeing the ways we blame You for things that You didn’t do, or we create circumstances that were unnecessary. We also recognize the difficulties that the human experience was and is, the struggles that we face now that were so entrenched in this knowledge of good and evil or we are the sovereign and we have to have the final say and make the final decision when what we are constantly going to see over and over and over repeatedly is, you are the sovereign Lord and the best move that we can make in any set of circumstances is to trust You. So, come Holy Spirit into this, lead us forward we pray expectantly, in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Prayer and Encouragements:

Hello, my beautiful DAB family, this is your sister Ashley from California, and it is Sunday, January 2nd. For all of you new ones out there, welcome. And I just want to come on here and encourage you. First things first though, guys we just have to take it a day at a time like that is the way that I got through last year and this is the way that I’m gonna get through this year too. But I just want to encourage you keep showing up and give yourself some grace. You don’t have to be perfect every day. And I want you to also, know that what God has in His word for you each and every day won’t return void and that’s from Isaiah 55:11. Each time you listen God has a purpose for it and when we’re going through this, I think Brian starting saying this last year but if you ask for God to give you eyes to see, ears to hear and a heart soft enough to receive the truth you will find so much richness in the word and as you walk through each day and in your life. And I just want you all to know that I am praying for God to use you with strength to be faithful and that you will fall in love with the word. I’m also just asking for prayer for me because I’m a teacher and I have three weeks of winter break. But I’m asking for strength to go back into work and maintain healthy habits and walk in the truth. So, I wanted to welcome all the newbies and what and say yeah for a new year, for everybody else. This is my second year with the DAB and I’m just excited. And let’s do this, welcome.

Hello DAB family, my name’s Dale. And this is my first-time calling in. And I just recently completed listening to the bible for the first time and I wanted to take this next year to start listening to the prayers after since I tend to shut it off before they come through. And tonight, a prayer came across from a gentlemen called Man of Wrath and he’s struggling with a self-destructive nature and verbal abuse and stuff towards his family especially during the holidays. He knows the Lord forgives him, but I pray that, I pray that his family would forgive him for his actions as well and be patient with him. And I pray that the Lord would just lift him up and have him help him have victory over these self-destructive tendencies. And I wanted to encourage Man of Wrath, he’s not alone. There are many other men out there who struggle with the same issue, and I pray that the DAB family would lift us all up and pray for our families that they would continue to forgive us for these attacks, I guess they are at times. We don’t mean to be this way, but we do love our families and we just pray that they would forgive us. I just wanted to lift this gentleman up in prayer. And know that he is not alone, that the DAB family is praying for him. Thank you so much.

Hey, DAB it’s Val in Vegas. Happy 2022. Okay, couple quick updates ya’ll. That Christmas party, I mean come on, really? Ah, best part of my Christmas was the Christmas party, thank you to everyone that called in. It was so joyous, oh so joyous. And Happy New. And I wanna let you guys know I got a new boss, praise God!! Yes, yes, yes, yes. I literally just got off the phone with her and she’s amazing. Oh God, thank you guys. I don’t know if you’ve ever had a bad work situation, but it can just ware on you in so many ways. Oh, thank You, Lord God. I’m just so grateful for ya’lls prayers. For God moving. A new role, more money, large territory, a new boss even a new director. Oh God, You went all the way. Thank You, Lord Jesus. I’m sorry guys I’m a little out of breath right now because I literally just hung up the phone and I had to do a praise dance all through my apartment. Oh God, I’m so grateful. It’s almost too good to be true but that’s just how the Lord runs and that’s how He works. And guys remember, if He’ll do it for me, He’ll do it for you. And then, one last thing, oh my gosh, on that last day when I got all those badges, all those precious badges, oh my God. This last year in going through the Bible was like no other before and it just literally brought me to my knees. Thank you for the badges, Brian. Thank you for everything that you and your family do. Oh, I love you guys so much. This probably sounds like a rambling but oh I just had to call in and let you guys know I got a new boss, thank You Jesus. Okay and this is my ending now I love you and so does Jesus.

Good morning Daily Audio Bible friends and family. I’m so happy to be able to actually come to you this morning. My name is Ray from Canada. I just want to thank Brian and his family for the great work that they do in preaching the word of God throughout the world. I also want to put in a prayer request today. I need prayer so that I could spend this year getting closer to God that I know in my heart I love but I keep living a life that basically is not pleasing to Him sometimes. I think I may be a sexual addict. I know that I regret actually participating in this and I just really do need prayer for my family to help me overcome this so that I could live with a good conscience before God. Once again, family, I hear your prayers, I try to faithfully listen each and every day to listen to the prayers of others and to pray for those that actually touch my heart and I just hope that God would do a miracle in my life this year and help me to castaway every idle in my life so that I could actually love Him more like He deserves to be loved. In Jesus name I pray this. Amen.

Hey ya’ll, this is Asia from Chicago. I’m really thankful to be here able to leave a message. Everybody that’s been praying for me these last few months. I really, really, really appreciate it. It’s been extremely hard, it’s gotten a lot harder since the last time I called in so seriously everyone, thank you for praying for me. But the reason why I’m actually calling in today is because it is January 3rd and I just finished listening to the prayers at the end of today’s episode and I’m calling in for three people: for Man of Wrath and for Elenore and for Shawn. Man of Wrath and Elenore are first time callers. Yeah, I just hear, I hear the brokenness in all three of your voices. I hear how humble you all are and how down. Elenore struggles with suicidal thoughts a lot, a lot lately, a lot in general. Man of Wrath, my dad was very abusive toward me for a long time and so, when I heard your voice, I just was heartbroken to hear. Cause I was just like wow, like, I know as a recipient and I have also have said and done things that were really hurtful toward my loved ones and also, thinking of you as well Shawn of making a big mistake and regretting it. And Lord, I just pray for all three of these beautiful people. I pray for them to feel compassion towards themselves, and my time is up. I love you guys. This is Asia from Chicago. Love you family.

Happy New Year to the Daily Audio Bible family. This is Richard, Rich Martin or Taxi Martin from Montréal. And I wanted to start the year, 17 years of Daily Audio Bible has been going on. I’ve not been going 17 years, maybe 5, I’m not sure anymore. But this year, I want to be diligent to be with you guys in prayer and listening to Brian reading the word of God. Starting the day or finishing the day listening to the word of God. So, I’m just saying a quick hello there, seeing that I will be with all you guys and I’m praying for you that you will have blessing, prosperity, heath, hallelujah and that God would give you breakthrough and that you know God more and better. In this beautiful journey around this Global Campfire, like Brian says. Love you all and can’t wait to hear you guys again in this new year that we’re starting together. God Bless.

Genesis 18:16-19:38

Abraham Pleads for Sodom

16 When the men(A) got up to leave, they looked down toward Sodom, and Abraham walked along with them to see them on their way. 17 Then the Lord said, “Shall I hide from Abraham(B) what I am about to do?(C) 18 Abraham will surely become a great and powerful nation,(D) and all nations on earth will be blessed through him.[a] 19 For I have chosen him(E), so that he will direct his children(F) and his household after him to keep the way of the Lord(G) by doing what is right and just,(H) so that the Lord will bring about for Abraham what he has promised him.”(I)

20 Then the Lord said, “The outcry against Sodom(J) and Gomorrah is so great(K) and their sin so grievous(L) 21 that I will go down(M) and see if what they have done is as bad as the outcry that has reached me. If not, I will know.”

22 The men(N) turned away and went toward Sodom,(O) but Abraham remained standing before the Lord.[b](P) 23 Then Abraham approached him and said: “Will you sweep away the righteous with the wicked?(Q) 24 What if there are fifty righteous people in the city? Will you really sweep it away and not spare[c] the place for the sake of the fifty righteous people in it?(R) 25 Far be it from you to do such a thing(S)—to kill the righteous with the wicked, treating the righteous(T) and the wicked alike.(U) Far be it from you! Will not the Judge(V) of all the earth do right?”(W)

26 The Lord said, “If I find fifty righteous people in the city of Sodom, I will spare the whole place for their sake.(X)

27 Then Abraham spoke up again: “Now that I have been so bold as to speak to the Lord, though I am nothing but dust and ashes,(Y) 28 what if the number of the righteous is five less than fifty? Will you destroy the whole city for lack of five people?”

“If I find forty-five there,” he said, “I will not destroy it.”

29 Once again he spoke to him, “What if only forty are found there?”

He said, “For the sake of forty, I will not do it.”

30 Then he said, “May the Lord not be angry,(Z) but let me speak. What if only thirty can be found there?”

He answered, “I will not do it if I find thirty there.”

31 Abraham said, “Now that I have been so bold as to speak to the Lord, what if only twenty can be found there?”

He said, “For the sake of twenty, I will not destroy it.”

32 Then he said, “May the Lord not be angry, but let me speak just once more.(AA) What if only ten can be found there?”

He answered, “For the sake of ten,(AB) I will not destroy it.”

33 When the Lord had finished speaking(AC) with Abraham, he left,(AD) and Abraham returned home.(AE)

Sodom and Gomorrah Destroyed

19 The two angels(AF) arrived at Sodom(AG) in the evening, and Lot(AH) was sitting in the gateway of the city.(AI) When he saw them, he got up to meet them and bowed down with his face to the ground.(AJ) “My lords,” he said, “please turn aside to your servant’s house. You can wash your feet(AK) and spend the night and then go on your way early in the morning.”

“No,” they answered, “we will spend the night in the square.”(AL)

But he insisted(AM) so strongly that they did go with him and entered his house.(AN) He prepared a meal for them, baking bread without yeast,(AO) and they ate.(AP) Before they had gone to bed, all the men from every part of the city of Sodom(AQ)—both young and old—surrounded the house. They called to Lot, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us so that we can have sex with them.”(AR)

Lot went outside to meet them(AS) and shut the door behind him and said, “No, my friends. Don’t do this wicked thing. Look, I have two daughters who have never slept with a man. Let me bring them out to you, and you can do what you like with them. But don’t do anything to these men, for they have come under the protection of my roof.”(AT)

“Get out of our way,” they replied. “This fellow came here as a foreigner,(AU) and now he wants to play the judge!(AV) We’ll treat you worse than them.” They kept bringing pressure on Lot and moved forward to break down the door.

10 But the men(AW) inside reached out and pulled Lot back into the house and shut the door. 11 Then they struck the men who were at the door of the house, young and old, with blindness(AX) so that they could not find the door.

12 The two men said to Lot, “Do you have anyone else here—sons-in-law, sons or daughters, or anyone else in the city who belongs to you?(AY) Get them out of here, 13 because we(AZ) are going to destroy this place. The outcry to the Lord against its people is so great(BA) that he has sent us to destroy it.”(BB)

14 So Lot went out and spoke to his sons-in-law, who were pledged to marry[d] his daughters. He said, “Hurry and get out of this place, because the Lord is about to destroy the city!(BC)” But his sons-in-law thought he was joking.(BD)

15 With the coming of dawn, the angels urged Lot, saying, “Hurry! Take your wife and your two daughters who are here, or you will be swept away(BE) when the city is punished.(BF)

16 When he hesitated, the men grasped his hand and the hands of his wife and of his two daughters(BG) and led them safely out of the city, for the Lord was merciful to them.(BH) 17 As soon as they had brought them out, one of them said, “Flee for your lives!(BI) Don’t look back,(BJ) and don’t stop anywhere in the plain!(BK) Flee to the mountains(BL) or you will be swept away!”

18 But Lot said to them, “No, my lords,[e] please! 19 Your[f] servant has found favor in your[g] eyes,(BM) and you[h] have shown great kindness(BN) to me in sparing my life. But I can’t flee to the mountains;(BO) this disaster will overtake me, and I’ll die. 20 Look, here is a town near enough to run to, and it is small. Let me flee to it—it is very small, isn’t it? Then my life will be spared.”

21 He said to him, “Very well, I will grant this request(BP) too; I will not overthrow the town you speak of. 22 But flee there quickly, because I cannot do anything until you reach it.” (That is why the town was called Zoar.[i](BQ))

23 By the time Lot reached Zoar,(BR) the sun had risen over the land. 24 Then the Lord rained down burning sulfur(BS) on Sodom and Gomorrah(BT)—from the Lord out of the heavens.(BU) 25 Thus he overthrew those cities(BV) and the entire plain,(BW) destroying all those living in the cities—and also the vegetation in the land.(BX) 26 But Lot’s wife looked back,(BY) and she became a pillar of salt.(BZ)

27 Early the next morning Abraham got up and returned to the place where he had stood before the Lord.(CA) 28 He looked down toward Sodom and Gomorrah, toward all the land of the plain, and he saw dense smoke rising from the land, like smoke from a furnace.(CB)

29 So when God destroyed the cities of the plain,(CC) he remembered(CD) Abraham, and he brought Lot out of the catastrophe(CE) that overthrew the cities where Lot had lived.(CF)

Lot and His Daughters

30 Lot and his two daughters left Zoar(CG) and settled in the mountains,(CH) for he was afraid to stay in Zoar. He and his two daughters lived in a cave. 31 One day the older daughter said to the younger, “Our father is old, and there is no man around here to give us children—as is the custom all over the earth. 32 Let’s get our father to drink wine and then sleep with him and preserve our family line(CI) through our father.”(CJ)

33 That night they got their father to drink wine, and the older daughter went in and slept with him. He was not aware of it when she lay down or when she got up.(CK)

34 The next day the older daughter said to the younger, “Last night I slept with my father. Let’s get him to drink wine again tonight, and you go in and sleep with him so we can preserve our family line through our father.”(CL) 35 So they got their father to drink wine(CM) that night also, and the younger daughter went in and slept with him. Again he was not aware of it when she lay down or when she got up.(CN)

36 So both of Lot’s daughters became pregnant by their father.(CO) 37 The older daughter had a son, and she named him Moab[j];(CP) he is the father of the Moabites(CQ) of today. 38 The younger daughter also had a son, and she named him Ben-Ammi[k]; he is the father of the Ammonites[l](CR) of today.

Matthew 6:25-7:14

Do Not Worry(A)

25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry(B) about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.(C) Are you not much more valuable than they?(D) 27 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life[a]?(E)

28 “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. 29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor(F) was dressed like one of these. 30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith?(G) 31 So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.(H) 33 But seek first his kingdom(I) and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.(J) 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

Judging Others(K)

“Do not judge, or you too will be judged.(L) For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.(M)

“Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.

“Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your pearls to pigs. If you do, they may trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces.

Ask, Seek, Knock(N)

“Ask and it will be given to you;(O) seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds;(P) and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.

“Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? 10 Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? 11 If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts(Q) to those who ask him! 12 So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you,(R) for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.(S)

The Narrow and Wide Gates

13 “Enter through the narrow gate.(T) For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. 14 But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.

Psalm 8

Psalm 8[a]

For the director of music. According to gittith.[b] A psalm of David.

Lord, our Lord,
how majestic is your name(A) in all the earth!

You have set your glory(B)
in the heavens.(C)
Through the praise of children and infants
you have established a stronghold(D) against your enemies,
to silence the foe(E) and the avenger.
When I consider your heavens,(F)
the work of your fingers,(G)
the moon and the stars,(H)
which you have set in place,
what is mankind that you are mindful of them,
human beings that you care for them?[c](I)

You have made them[d] a little lower than the angels[e](J)
and crowned them[f] with glory and honor.(K)
You made them rulers(L) over the works of your hands;(M)
you put everything under their[g] feet:(N)
all flocks and herds,(O)
and the animals of the wild,(P)
the birds in the sky,
and the fish in the sea,(Q)
all that swim the paths of the seas.

Lord, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!(R)

Proverbs 2:6-15

For the Lord gives wisdom;(A)
from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.(B)
He holds success in store for the upright,
he is a shield(C) to those whose walk is blameless,(D)
for he guards the course of the just
and protects the way of his faithful ones.(E)

and who are devious in their ways.(M)

Genesis 16:1-18:15, Matthew 6:1-24, Psalms 7:1-17, Proverbs 2:1-5

Today is the 7th day of January, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I am Brian it is a joy; it is a privilege, it is an honor to be here together with you as we find our place around the Global Campfire, come in out of the cold. There’s always a place here. And what we realize is coming around the Global Campfire is also permission; it’s giving ourselves permission to do something that is deeply beneficial for our souls and our lives. Give ourselves this little space. we have a little oasis. No matter what…what our traditions going to be, whether we listen first thing in the morning or in the afternoon or at night or whenever. There is an oasis every day, a little place where we can lay down our burdens and simply allow the Scriptures to wash into our lives and give us a little bit of a reset. And, so, often what we need to hear is we do. So, let’s get started for today. We’re reading from the New International Version this week and we will head back out into the book of Genesis back alongside Abram and pick up the story where we left off yesterday. Genesis chapter 16 verse 1 through 18 verse 15 today.

Commentary:

Okay. So, we covered a lot of ground again today. Couple things little mile markers along the way. Abraham and Sarah have a promise. It’s an impossible promise, but they have a promise from God. And that is that they will…they will have a son in their old age. And, so, what we see as a response to that. We see Sarah saying how can I…basically…how can this happen? This isn’t going to happen. How can this happen? And then she begins to think about how maybe that it could happen, like to fill in the blanks about how to get from this impossible situation into that promise. She has a servant named Hagar and she decides the way this promise can be fulfilled is to give Hagar to Abraham as another wife. Abraham will then have sex with Hagar and maybe she…and maybe this is where the son of promise will come. Can we just pause there for a second and let the Bible become a mirror into our own soul? How often have we, along our faith journey felt a sense of promise, a sense of destiny, a sense of hope in something that we believe is going to materialize, and we believe that this is something that God is speaking to us? And, so, maybe we wait and maybe it’s not happening fast enough and maybe we laugh because it’s so impossible. And then invariably what we do? We try to figure out where we went wrong and how it might be and how to sort of navigate into whatever it is that could make this happen. And then what do we try to do? Make it happen. And how often has not gotten us into big trouble? And then how often have we gotten mad about that, mad at God because He promised? And then we decide to make it happen and then the mess that we made is somehow His fault. In this particular story with Abraham and Sarah God had said what God meant and then they decided how they would fulfill God’s promise for him, which did in the end produce a son. It also produced a lot of hardship. Hagar and Sarah were at odds with each other as you can only imagine. It causes problems between Abraham and Sarah and their marriage as you can imagine. And eventually Hagar is just sent away with her son. Like get outta here. And, so, she goes into the wilderness of Beersheba, which is an actual place where she assumes she will perish. She wasn’t a part of what God had laid out to Abraham. She was co-opted into this plan to make this promise come true on behalf of God. So, now she has a son and she’s kicked out. And what a lonely, hopeless place to be in. So basically, we have Abraham and Sarah, who have involved Hagar and then kicked Hagar out. And she didn’t do this, so is she cursed by God? Does God despise her? We see that God comes for her and a promise is given. “I will increase your descendants so much that they will be too numerous to count.” She says, “you are the God who sees me.” And that last part, “You are the God who sees me,” that's…that’s famous. But now we have a little bit of context for where that comes from.

Next little mile marker we should talk about from our reading today that one of the signs, like this first initial sign of a covenant between God and Abraham is circumcision, which, you know, kind of a weird way to enter into an agreement, right, or a contract or a covenant. So, it’s easy enough to see it as strange or bizarre. And why is reshaping a man’s penis so important to God? But as the sign of an everlasting covenant that has to do with your descendants…well…starts to make some sense. Since we’re talking about such an important and sensitive part of the body for a male, how would Abraham ever have the opportunity to forget. I don’t want to be like overly crude here, but he couldn’t even go to the bathroom without being reminded that he’s in a covenant with God. And if this child of promise is going to be…to be born after conventional standards, then the organ that was circumcised is going to have to be involved. And if this sign of the covenant is passed forward to the generations than the idea of offspring in covenant or under the covenant becomes much more clear and apparent.

And then let’s jump into the book of Matthew today. Jesus is talking about motivations, the “why” we do the things that we do. Like for example the “why” we would help a person who is less fortunate than us, that needs food, or that needs shelter or needs help in some sort of way. Why would we help that person? If the reason is so that we can be seen doing it, or so that it creates some kind of post for us on social media so that we can tell the story of our good deed and how awesome we are then was the motivation way to help somebody in need or was the motivation to be seen helping somebody in need? Jesus does this kind of stuff all the time because He’s cutting through the layers and the masks that we hide behind in getting to the truth. He’s inviting everyone to examine themselves. And we’ll see it over and over and over. It’s like there’s a story behind the one that’s being told and the story that’s behind the curated version is the truth. And we need to get comfortable with the truth because it will set us free. And we…we lie to ourselves all the time justifying just about anything, creating some sort of story that will make it okay. Jesus is making it pretty clear that our interior life is where the truth is that. You can say anything but how you live is the truth.

And also in our reading from Matthew today we encountered one of the most famous things in the New Testament, the Lord’s prayer, right? I mean we can all…in fact, let’s pray the Lord’s prayer together. “Our father who art in heaven hollowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil for thyne is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.” That is how Jesus taught his disciples to pray when they asked Him. Like I said, this is one of the most famous portions of the New Testament. What is a little bit less famous is what Jesus says in the next breath. Like, the topic hasn’t changed here. We’re not moving into a different story. And, so, the location hasn’t changed. It’s all part of the same exchange of words that Jesus had already been speaking. So, we could probably most of us recite the Lord’s prayer. We just prayed this together. Then Jesus takes a breath and says something that should flatten us. “If you forgive other people when they sin against you your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.” There’s like no loopholes listed here. There’s not the…there’s no fine print. He means what he is saying. And if what He is saying is the truth then forgiveness isn’t a good idea, it’s essential for life. And we’ve all gone through things where we’ve had to forgive. And we’ve all done things in which we’ve had to be forgiven. And it would be easy enough to go, “you don’t know what he did to me. You don’t know what she did to me. You don’t know what they did. You don’t know what I’ve been through. I…my heart is locked up and closed off. I can’t forgive.” The thing is, forgiveness will have to become a category in our lives. Something that is an initial response, something that we simply do, that we become in the habit of doing. When we are trespassed against we forgive the trespass. And it co0uld feel at times that this is an impossible command, like this is an impossible thing to live up to. Why would God burden us with letting everybody do…just walk all over us and we just let it go. The idea here isn’t to be a doormat. The idea here is that if we collect trespasses, the sins that have been perpetrated against us, we collect them. Where do we put them and store them? We store them along with the emotion and the circumstances in our hearts? If that is going to be a lifelong practice, then we will have a heart full of unforgiveness. We will forever be chained to it. We’re gonna have plenty of opportunities to talk about things like forgiveness on our journey through the Scriptures but for today it needs to become an essential category because Jesus is essentially saying we will be forgiven the way that we forgive, which is an important thing to know and something that can explain an awful lot.

Prayer:

Jesus, You haven’t given us something that’s going to simply put us in bondage. You have given us keys to freedom - letting go, releasing to You. And we confess that this is really impossible at times. It feels impossible at times. But it was impossible for Abraham and Sarah to have a child. And even though things got messy for a minute they believed. And, so, we believe You. We believe that if we forgive, we will be forgiven, if…if we release, we will find freedom. We’re right at the beginning of the year. And, so, we have the opportunity to walk with You in these things, we begin to release things that have been stored up in our hearts seeping poison into our lives for so long. But now we can begin to think of what it might even look like to be free from that. And, so, we begin to take the first step to walk with You in this because it looks different for each one of us. We all have a story that is brought us to this day. And You know that story. You know it better than we do. And, so, as impossible as it might seem in certain circumstances, we reach for You, we believe You. Teach us to forgive Lord we pray. In the mighty name of Jesus, we ask. Amen.

Song:

Holy Water – We the Kingdom

God, I’m on my knees again
God, I’m begging please again
I need you
Oh, I need you

Walking down these desert roads
Water for my thirsty soul
I need you
Oh, I need you

Your forgiveness
Is like sweet, sweet honey on my lips
Like the sound of a symphony to my ears
Like Holy water on my skin

Dead man walking, slave to sin
I wanna know about being born again
I need you
Oh, God, I need you

So, take me to the riverside
Take me under, baptize
I need you
Oh, God I need you

Your forgiveness
Is like sweet, sweet honey on my lips
Like the sound of a symphony to my ears
Like holy water on my skin
(On my skin)

I don’t wanna abuse your grace
God, I need it every day
It’s the only thing that ever really makes me wanna change

I don’t wanna abuse your grace
God, I need it every day
It’s the only thing that ever really makes me wanna change

I don’t wanna abuse your grace
God, I need it every day
It’s the only thing that ever really makes me wanna change

I don’t wanna abuse your grace
God, I need it every day
It’s the only thing that ever really makes me wanna change

Your forgiveness
Is like sweet, sweet honey on my lips (yes, it is)
Like the sound of a symphony to my ears
It’s like holy water

Your forgiveness
Is like sweet, sweet honey on my lips
Like the sound of a symphony on my ears
It’s like holy water on my skin
It’s like holy water on my skin
It’s like holy water

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Friday January 7, 2022 (NIV)

Genesis 16:1-18:15

Hagar and Ishmael

16 Now Sarai,(A) Abram’s wife, had borne him no children.(B) But she had an Egyptian slave(C) named Hagar;(D) so she said to Abram, “The Lord has kept me from having children.(E) Go, sleep with my slave; perhaps I can build a family through her.”(F)

Abram agreed to what Sarai said. So after Abram had been living in Canaan(G) ten years,(H) Sarai his wife took her Egyptian slave Hagar and gave her to her husband to be his wife. He slept with Hagar,(I) and she conceived.

When she knew she was pregnant, she began to despise her mistress.(J) Then Sarai said to Abram, “You are responsible for the wrong I am suffering. I put my slave in your arms, and now that she knows she is pregnant, she despises me. May the Lord judge between you and me.”(K)

“Your slave is in your hands,(L)” Abram said. “Do with her whatever you think best.” Then Sarai mistreated(M) Hagar; so she fled from her.

The angel of the Lord(N) found Hagar near a spring(O) in the desert; it was the spring that is beside the road to Shur.(P) And he said, “Hagar,(Q) slave of Sarai, where have you come from, and where are you going?”(R)

“I’m running away from my mistress Sarai,” she answered.

Then the angel of the Lord told her, “Go back to your mistress and submit to her.” 10 The angel added, “I will increase your descendants so much that they will be too numerous to count.”(S)

11 The angel of the Lord(T) also said to her:

“You are now pregnant
and you will give birth to a son.(U)
You shall name him(V) Ishmael,[a](W)
for the Lord has heard of your misery.(X)
12 He will be a wild donkey(Y) of a man;
his hand will be against everyone
and everyone’s hand against him,
and he will live in hostility
toward[b] all his brothers.(Z)

13 She gave this name to the Lord who spoke to her: “You are the God who sees me,(AA)” for she said, “I have now seen[c] the One who sees me.”(AB) 14 That is why the well(AC) was called Beer Lahai Roi[d];(AD) it is still there, between Kadesh(AE) and Bered.

15 So Hagar(AF) bore Abram a son,(AG) and Abram gave the name Ishmael(AH) to the son she had borne. 16 Abram was eighty-six years old(AI) when Hagar bore him Ishmael.

The Covenant of Circumcision

17 When Abram was ninety-nine years old,(AJ) the Lord appeared to him(AK) and said, “I am God Almighty[e];(AL) walk before me faithfully and be blameless.(AM) Then I will make my covenant between me and you(AN) and will greatly increase your numbers.”(AO)

Abram fell facedown,(AP) and God said to him, “As for me, this is my covenant with you:(AQ) You will be the father of many nations.(AR) No longer will you be called Abram[f]; your name will be Abraham,[g](AS) for I have made you a father of many nations.(AT) I will make you very fruitful;(AU) I will make nations of you, and kings will come from you.(AV) I will establish my covenant(AW) as an everlasting covenant(AX) between me and you and your descendants after you for the generations to come, to be your God(AY) and the God of your descendants after you.(AZ) The whole land of Canaan,(BA) where you now reside as a foreigner,(BB) I will give as an everlasting possession to you and your descendants after you;(BC) and I will be their God.(BD)

Then God said to Abraham, “As for you, you must keep my covenant,(BE) you and your descendants after you for the generations to come.(BF) 10 This is my covenant with you and your descendants after you, the covenant you are to keep: Every male among you shall be circumcised.(BG) 11 You are to undergo circumcision,(BH) and it will be the sign of the covenant(BI) between me and you. 12 For the generations to come(BJ) every male among you who is eight days old must be circumcised,(BK) including those born in your household or bought with money from a foreigner—those who are not your offspring. 13 Whether born in your household or bought with your money, they must be circumcised.(BL) My covenant in your flesh is to be an everlasting covenant.(BM) 14 Any uncircumcised male, who has not been circumcised(BN) in the flesh, will be cut off from his people;(BO) he has broken my covenant.(BP)

15 God also said to Abraham, “As for Sarai(BQ) your wife, you are no longer to call her Sarai; her name will be Sarah.(BR) 16 I will bless her and will surely give you a son by her.(BS) I will bless her so that she will be the mother of nations;(BT) kings of peoples will come from her.”

17 Abraham fell facedown;(BU) he laughed(BV) and said to himself, “Will a son be born to a man a hundred years old?(BW) Will Sarah bear a child at the age of ninety?”(BX) 18 And Abraham said to God, “If only Ishmael(BY) might live under your blessing!”(BZ)

19 Then God said, “Yes, but your wife Sarah will bear you a son,(CA) and you will call him Isaac.[h](CB) I will establish my covenant with him(CC) as an everlasting covenant(CD) for his descendants after him. 20 And as for Ishmael, I have heard you: I will surely bless him; I will make him fruitful and will greatly increase his numbers.(CE) He will be the father of twelve rulers,(CF) and I will make him into a great nation.(CG) 21 But my covenant(CH) I will establish with Isaac, whom Sarah will bear to you(CI) by this time next year.”(CJ) 22 When he had finished speaking with Abraham, God went up from him.(CK)

23 On that very day Abraham took his son Ishmael and all those born in his household(CL) or bought with his money, every male in his household, and circumcised them, as God told him.(CM) 24 Abraham was ninety-nine years old(CN) when he was circumcised,(CO) 25 and his son Ishmael(CP) was thirteen; 26 Abraham and his son Ishmael were both circumcised on that very day. 27 And every male in Abraham’s household(CQ), including those born in his household or bought from a foreigner, was circumcised with him.

The Three Visitors

18 The Lord appeared to Abraham(CR) near the great trees of Mamre(CS) while he was sitting at the entrance to his tent(CT) in the heat of the day. Abraham looked up(CU) and saw three men(CV) standing nearby. When he saw them, he hurried from the entrance of his tent to meet them and bowed low to the ground.(CW)

He said, “If I have found favor in your eyes,(CX) my lord,[i] do not pass your servant(CY) by. Let a little water be brought, and then you may all wash your feet(CZ) and rest under this tree. Let me get you something to eat,(DA) so you can be refreshed and then go on your way—now that you have come to your servant.”

“Very well,” they answered, “do as you say.”

So Abraham hurried into the tent to Sarah. “Quick,” he said, “get three seahs[j] of the finest flour and knead it and bake some bread.”(DB)

Then he ran to the herd and selected a choice, tender calf(DC) and gave it to a servant, who hurried to prepare it. He then brought some curds(DD) and milk(DE) and the calf that had been prepared, and set these before them.(DF) While they ate, he stood near them under a tree.

“Where is your wife Sarah?”(DG) they asked him.

“There, in the tent,(DH)” he said.

10 Then one of them said, “I will surely return to you about this time next year,(DI) and Sarah your wife will have a son.”(DJ)

Now Sarah was listening at the entrance to the tent, which was behind him. 11 Abraham and Sarah were already very old,(DK) and Sarah was past the age of childbearing.(DL) 12 So Sarah laughed(DM) to herself as she thought, “After I am worn out and my lord(DN) is old, will I now have this pleasure?”

13 Then the Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh and say, ‘Will I really have a child, now that I am old?’(DO) 14 Is anything too hard for the Lord?(DP) I will return to you at the appointed time next year,(DQ) and Sarah will have a son.”(DR)

15 Sarah was afraid, so she lied and said, “I did not laugh.”

But he said, “Yes, you did laugh.”

Matthew 6:1-24

Giving to the Needy

“Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them.(A) If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.

“So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.(B)

Prayer(C)

“And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing(D) in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father,(E) who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do not keep on babbling(F) like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words.(G) Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need(H) before you ask him.

“This, then, is how you should pray:

“‘Our Father(I) in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
10 your kingdom(J) come,
your will be done,(K)
on earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us today our daily bread.(L)
12 And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.(M)
13 And lead us not into temptation,[a](N)
but deliver us from the evil one.[b](O)

14 For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.(P) 15 But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.(Q)

Fasting

16 “When you fast,(R) do not look somber(S) as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 17 But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, 18 so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.(T)

Treasures in Heaven(U)

19 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth,(V) where moths and vermin destroy,(W) and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven,(X) where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.(Y) 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.(Z)

22 “The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy,[c] your whole body will be full of light. 23 But if your eyes are unhealthy,[d] your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!

24 “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.(AA)

Psalm 7

Psalm 7[a]

A shiggaion[b](A) of David, which he sang to the Lord concerning Cush, a Benjamite.

Lord my God, I take refuge(B) in you;
save and deliver me(C) from all who pursue me,(D)
or they will tear me apart like a lion(E)
and rip me to pieces with no one to rescue(F) me.

Lord my God, if I have done this
and there is guilt on my hands(G)
if I have repaid my ally with evil
or without cause(H) have robbed my foe—
then let my enemy pursue and overtake(I) me;
let him trample my life to the ground(J)
and make me sleep in the dust.[c](K)

Arise,(L) Lord, in your anger;
rise up against the rage of my enemies.(M)
Awake,(N) my God; decree justice.
Let the assembled peoples gather around you,
while you sit enthroned over them on high.(O)
Let the Lord judge(P) the peoples.
Vindicate me, Lord, according to my righteousness,(Q)
according to my integrity,(R) O Most High.(S)
Bring to an end the violence of the wicked
and make the righteous secure—(T)
you, the righteous God(U)
who probes minds and hearts.(V)

10 My shield[d](W) is God Most High,
who saves the upright in heart.(X)
11 God is a righteous judge,(Y)
a God who displays his wrath(Z) every day.
12 If he does not relent,(AA)
he[e] will sharpen his sword;(AB)
he will bend and string his bow.(AC)
13 He has prepared his deadly weapons;
he makes ready his flaming arrows.(AD)

14 Whoever is pregnant with evil
conceives trouble and gives birth(AE) to disillusionment.
15 Whoever digs a hole and scoops it out
falls into the pit(AF) they have made.(AG)
16 The trouble they cause recoils on them;
their violence comes down on their own heads.

17 I will give thanks to the Lord because of his righteousness;(AH)
I will sing the praises(AI) of the name of the Lord Most High.(AJ)

Proverbs 2:1-5

Moral Benefits of Wisdom

My son,(A) if you accept my words
and store up my commands within you,
turning your ear to wisdom
and applying your heart to understanding(B)
indeed, if you call out for insight(C)
and cry aloud for understanding,
and if you look for it as for silver
and search for it as for hidden treasure,(D)
then you will understand the fear of the Lord
and find the knowledge of God.(E)
