Song 1:1-4:16, 2 Corinthians 8:16-24, Psalms 50:1-23, Proverbs 22:22-23

Today is the 6th day of September welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I’m Brian it is a joy to be here at the threshold again and throw open the door and step into a shiny, sparkly, new week together. This will be the first full week of the month of September and can’t think of a better thing to do than to begin this week by immersing ourselves in the Scriptures. And, so, we finished the book of Ecclesiastes yesterday. So, we greet this new week we’ll be moving into some new territory. And we’ve been moving through the wisdom literature that is contained in the Bible, that being a part of Psalms, the Proverbs, Job Ecclesiastes. And we’re remaining in wisdom literature as we come into this new book, but it’s a very different perspective, a very…coming from a very different place.

Introduction to the Song of Songs / the Song of Solomon:

This is the book known as the Song of Songs or the Song of Solomon. And it’s some of the most beautiful poetry in the…in the world and these love poems are of the consummation of love and bliss and joy between a man and a woman who have committed their lives and are just basically drunk with love for one another. But this is poetry and its wisdom literature. And, so, there are many layers that…that can be looked at. There are many ways to look at what we’re about to read together. Certainly, the passionate consummation of love between a man and woman who…who are just deeply lost in love is the pretext. So, it stands alone on its own as a witness to…to marital love and the bliss that happens in a passionate physical relationship. But there are other ways to read this - a mystical reading, like what are the deeper layers here? What do the allegories mean? And, so, like ancient Jewish tradition looks at the…the poem from the perspective that it reveals God’s passionate love for His children, the Hebrew people, which is…which is completely supportable in the Scriptures in the old and new Testaments. And then in our Christian tradition we have an allegorical look at the passionate, deep, abiding, like lost in love passion of Christ for His church and His deep desire for His people. And this is one of the cases where all of those can be right all at the same time. It’s a short book. We’ll read it today and tomorrow. And, so, you can read it number of times. You can read it from a number of perspectives on your own just inviting God to take you deeper and deeper into it and see what kind of lens the Holy Spirit leads you to. And, so, that’s what can happen here as we move through this. Invite God into how you hear it, how you receive it. Since it’s love poetry between a man…a man and a woman we have a tradition here at the Daily Audio Bible, my wife Jill comes to join me for these couple of days and I can read the male part and she can read the female part and that takes us into the…into the poetry in a meaningful way. And, so, I welcome my wife Jill along for this ride and we got a brand-new week so we’re gonna read from the Christian Standard Bible this week. Song of songs chapters 1 through 4.

Prayer:

Father we thank You for Your word and we thank You for bringing us into this new, shiny, sparkly week that is out in front of us reminding us that we will live into it one way or the other. There is only one way to go and that is forward. And, so, we will be swept forward into this week, but we will either be swept into the torrent of the chaos that can swirl all around us or we will methodically walk hand-in-hand step-by-step with the lover of our souls that we are reading about as we read through the song of Solomon. And we thank You for the gift of love. We thank You for the gift of companionship, we thank You for our spouses, we thank You for the intimacy that we share together, we thank You for the intimacy that You long for with us, that You are within us, which is as intimate as it can be. And, so, we acknowledge that. We settle into that. You want to be with us. We want to be with You. And, so, we give ourselves to You with abandon as we walk into this new week. Come Holy Spirit we pray. In the name of Jesus we ask. Amen.

Announcements:

dailyaudiobible.com is home base, it is home base, it’s where the Global Campfire is. It’s our entrance into the community together. So, be aware of it. So, check it out.

Check out the resources that are available in Daily Audio Bible Shop. Certainly, be aware of the Prayer Wall. There is nothing better for the times when we are feeling pretty low, but to turn outward…I mean…the things that are going on, they are going on but obsessing about them, it just doesn’t help. It saps our energy, but ironically what does help is to turn outward and understand we’re not the only ones and to reach out in prayer for our brothers and sisters. So, the Prayer Wall is a wonderful place to do that. So, check that out.

If you want to partner with the Daily Audio Bible in the mission that we collectively share to bring the spoken word of God to anyone who will listen to it, which is all of us, anywhere on this planet any time of day or night, if that brings life to you than thank you for your partnership. Community Prayer and Praise:

Good morning Daily Audio Bible community this is Diane Olive Brown from Newburgh Indiana shalom shalom it’s 6:44 in the morning central time on Tuesday, September 1, 2020 and I just listened to Brian’s commentary and this song came to me from a movie. Maybe you guys know it. And it goes…and so I’m gonna sing it. [singing starts] Words, words, words I’m so sick of words I hear words all day through from him now from you is that all you blighters can do? [singing stops] My point is I have repented. All my life, that’s the way I’ve been - I talk I talk and I talk and I never stop and I never stop and I used to just say everything that blurted out of my mouth. Well, I put my hands in front of my mouth now and I say forgive me Father for I have sinned against You. Instead of listening I thought I was speaking for You, but I wasn’t. I was blustering. I was full of pride and I’m sorry. Please forgive me. Holy Spirit, will You please teach me to have a gentle and a quiet spirit? I love You. My log is on the campfire…

Good morning daily audio Bible family it’s September 1st this is Angel in Maryland. I’m calling family for your prayers for my sister who lives in Louisiana. She…my family was affected by the hurricane in Louisiana and that was last Thursday, August 27th and that day she text me saying that she tested positive for Covid and it’s really hard when you’re going through a natural disaster, you don’t have comforts of life and she’s fighting for her life right now. She has…she is married she has two boys age five and age one and I would ask that you just keep her lifted. She’s…she’s been a fairly healthy person, eats very well, exercises but Covid has a way of being unpredictable. So, I ask that you just pray for my sister in Louisiana, that she will be healed. I do believe God is a healer. Thank you.

Father God, this is Donna in Pennsylvania. I just listened to a woman calling from her parking lot, she’s a nurse and is just dreading going to work and facing a second wave of Covid patients. She just can’t do it again. Her son is bipolar at home pacing and talking to himself for hours and she can’t help him. Lord, I had a stressful, busy, long day yesterday. I’ve got a…more of one today and not enough sleep last night. And I ask that You would lift us up, help us Lord, moment by moment to trust You because You promise to be there never to fail or forsake us. I ask Lord that You would help us commit this day to YAou, that Your will be done and that You will strengthen us, that we would be able to delight in You today Lord, that nothing could steal our joy in You, no circumstances and that we would remember to wait on You because we were never meant to carry these burdens along. You promised to be with us. Through the fire we will not be burned, through the water we will not be overwhelmed. You are with us moment by moment. Day by day I asked that You would hold us up, lift up this woman and help her and her son, all of those who are nurses and doctors, those facing possible eviction, those who are sick, those who are struggling, hungry and hopeless. O God help us. In Jesus’ name I trust, I wait, I commit, and delight in You today…

Hi DAB family it’s James here from the UK, been a very long time since I last called but I just ask for your prayers over my family. We’ve moved home and it’s been done during the lockdown period. Obviously, a very stressful for a lot of people but we’ve been truly blessed. I have found a new job, my wife also. But we’re struggling and we’re struggling because we are feeling a lack of…of place. We feel that the reason that God’s brought us here is very clear because of the health of my father, which is worsening. And many of you prayed sometime back because he had a…a really catastrophic stroke and he’s still hanging in there, but he needs more help. And, so, we’re back. We are near to mom and dad now which is really great. And God’s blessed us with a house that literally at the moment we’re renting a couple doors down from them. So, we are so thankful, but my wife is struggling. And she’s struggling with the fact that she feels really torn away from her friends, her family, her community. And we just ask for your prayers. I ask for your prayers in particular in her life, that she might find a way to make inroads with a relationship with my mom and find peace. Thank you, family.

Hello DAB this is Tim from Edinburgh in Scotland UK I’ve got a prayer support, praise report, and prayer request. My prayer support is my prayer in intercession for Michael. Michael your call was broadcast on Thursday and you were heading in for eye surgery and I pray for your continued healing, bodily and in soul and in spirit. Thursday was also the day that I started developing systems in my eye, like a curtain being drawn across. On Saturday the Scripture reading included 2 Corinthians 3:16 in DAB which was, “but whenever anyone turns to the Lord the veil is taken away.” On Saturday I was diagnosed with the detached retina. On Monday emergency surgery was carried out and Monday was also the day that Laura and an unnamed chap, their calls were broadcast again in intercession for Michael. My praise report is…is basically that I just carried along on the coattails of Michael and claimed a share in those prayers. Thank you, guys. The surgery seems to have gone very smoothly and I’m just in recovery phase now. And, so, my prayer request for the whole of DAB family is to pray for everyone and to pray for everyone that anyone specific for whom we pray, we can all share with that. And I know that this will resonate with Brian, that I pray with all those with eyesight issues, conditions, problems and I give all glory and praise and thanks to Jesus who kept me say throughout my procedure, stood there in the gap with me. I give thanks to Jesus and thanks to this wonderful community and this family. Thank you. Amen.

Hi this is Victoria Soldier just calling to pray for some of the DABbers. I wanted to pray for Michael who had lost his father and mother and going through a divorce and all of the challenges that he’s going through, that God would give him the victory. I also want to pray for Margo in Nigeria who’s stuck at the airport and trying to get back to Canada. I’m asking God bless her with a victory. I also want to pray for my…my sister I think her name is Abigail about the young…two young boys she’s in the hospital with a stroke and her mom dying of cancer. And I want to pray for those who have lost a loved one or anybody to coronavirus. I just want to give one victory. My son had been tested positive, but we went through the incubation period and God blessed us that we made it through. And just praying that God gives us the release…that we released as a nation from this and that we can continue to live as God wants us to in the freedom and that backed with a victory in being able to do the things that He wants us to do. Gracious Father I lift You up I praise Your name I ask You Lord to have Your way in the lives of the DABbers. Lord the sister even…even with that’s taking the test today Lord we pray that You give her the victory. We just pray that You touch those in the hospital. You touch those that lost their loved ones, the name that I could remember and the ones that I didn’t and let them know that I love them and that I’m…that…that…that they’re included in this prayer because __ You that none would perish. He wants You to have the victory and because You are a DABber You’re a DABber. And I want to let You know that God loves You. And the one who was praying for the one on her job and her husband’s a coal worker. Lord we just ask You to have Your way, Lord You heal and deliver…

Song of Songs 1-4

The Song of Songs, which is Solomon’s.(A)

Woman

Oh, that he would kiss me with the kisses of his mouth!
For your caresses[a] are more delightful than wine.(B)
The fragrance of your perfume is intoxicating;(C)
your name is perfume poured out.(D)
No wonder young women[b] adore you.
Take me with you(E)—let’s hurry.
Oh, that the king would bring[c] me to his chambers.

Young Women

We will rejoice and be glad in you;
we will celebrate your caresses more than wine.

Woman

It is only right that they adore you.

Daughters of Jerusalem,(F)
I am dark like the tents of Kedar,(G)
yet lovely(H) like the curtains of Solomon.
Do not stare at me because I am dark,
for the sun has gazed on me.
My mother’s sons were angry with me;(I)
they made me take care of the vineyards.(J)
I have not taken care of my own vineyard.

Tell me, you whom I love:(K)
Where do you pasture your sheep?(L)
Where do you let them rest at noon?(M)
Why should I be like one who veils herself[d]
beside the flocks of your companions?(N)

Man

[e]If you do not know,
most beautiful of women,(O)
follow[f] the tracks of the flock,
and pasture your young goats
near the shepherds’ tents.

I compare you, my darling,(P)
to a[g] mare among Pharaoh’s chariots.(Q)
10 Your cheeks are beautiful with jewelry,(R)
your neck with its necklace.
11 We will make gold jewelry for you,
accented with silver.

Woman

12 While the king is on his couch,[h]
my perfume[i] releases its fragrance.(S)
13 The one I love is a sachet of myrrh to me,(T)
spending the night between my breasts.
14 The one I love is a cluster of henna blossoms to me,(U)
in the vineyards of En-gedi.(V)

Man

15 How beautiful you are, my darling.
How very beautiful!
Your eyes are doves.(W)

Woman

16 How handsome you are, my love.(X)
How delightful!
Our bed is verdant;
17 the beams of our house are cedars,
and our rafters are cypresses.[j]
I am a wildflower[k] of Sharon,
a lily[l] of the valleys.(Y)

Man

Like a lily among thorns,
so is my darling among the young women.

Woman

Like an apricot[m] tree among the trees of the forest,
so is my love among the young men.
I delight to sit in his shade,
and his fruit is sweet to my taste.
He brought me to the banquet hall,[n](Z)
and he looked on me with love.[o](AA)
Sustain me with raisins;
refresh me with apricots,[p]
for I am lovesick.(AB)
May his left hand be under my head,
and his right arm embrace me.(AC)
Young women of Jerusalem, I charge you
by the gazelles and the wild does of the field,
do not stir up or awaken love
until the appropriate time.[q](AD)

Listen! My love is approaching.
Look! Here he comes,
leaping over the mountains,(AE)
bounding over the hills.
My love is like a gazelle
or a young stag.(AF)
See, he is standing behind our wall,
gazing through the windows,
peering through the lattice.
10 My love calls to me:

Man

Arise,(AG) my darling.
Come away, my beautiful one.
11 For now the winter is past;
the rain has ended and gone away.
12 The blossoms appear in the countryside.
The time of singing[r] has come,
and the turtledove’s cooing is heard in our land.(AH)
13 The fig tree ripens its figs;(AI)
the blossoming vines give off their fragrance.(AJ)
Arise, my darling.
Come away, my beautiful one.

14 My dove,(AK) in the clefts of the rock,(AL)
in the crevices of the cliff,
let me see your face,[s]
let me hear your voice;(AM)
for your voice is sweet,
and your face is lovely.(AN)

Woman

15 [t]Catch the foxes for us(AO)
the little foxes that ruin the vineyards—
for our vineyards are in bloom.(AP)

Woman

16 My love is mine and I am his;(AQ)
he feeds among the lilies.
17 Until the day breaks[u]
and the shadows flee,
turn around, my love, and be like a gazelle
or a young stag(AR) on the divided mountains.[v](AS)

In my bed at night[w]
I sought the one I love;(AT)
I sought him, but did not find him.[x](AU)
I will arise now and go about the city,
through the streets and the plazas.(AV)
I will seek the one I love.
I sought him, but did not find him.
The guards who go about the city found me.(AW)
I asked them, “Have you seen the one I love?”
I had just passed them
when I found the one I love.
I held on to him and would not let him go
until I brought him to my mother’s house(AX)
to the chamber of the one who conceived me.
Young women of Jerusalem, I charge you
by the gazelles and the wild does of the field,
do not stir up or awaken love
until the appropriate time.[y](AY)

Narrator

Who is this(AZ) coming up from the wilderness
like columns of smoke,
scented with myrrh and frankincense(BA)
from every fragrant powder of the merchant?

Look! Solomon’s bed
surrounded by sixty warriors
from the mighty men of Israel.
All of them are skilled with swords
and trained in warfare.
Each has his sword at his side(BB)
to guard against the terror of the night.(BC)

King Solomon made a carriage for himself
with wood from Lebanon.
10 He made its posts of silver,
its back[z] of gold,
and its seat of purple.
Its interior is inlaid with love[aa]
by the young women of Jerusalem.(BD)
11 Go out, young women of Zion,(BE)
and gaze at King Solomon,
wearing the crown his mother placed on him
on the day of his wedding(BF)
the day of his heart’s rejoicing.

Man

How beautiful you are, my darling.
How very beautiful!
Behind your veil,
your eyes are doves.(BG)
Your hair is like a flock of goats
streaming down Mount Gilead.(BH)
Your teeth are like a flock of newly shorn sheep
coming up from washing,
each one bearing twins,
and none has lost its young.[ab](BI)
Your lips are like a scarlet cord,(BJ)
and your mouth[ac] is lovely.
Behind your veil,
your brow[ad] is like a slice of pomegranate.(BK)
Your neck is like the tower of David,(BL)
constructed in layers.
A thousand shields are hung on it—
all of them shields of warriors.
Your breasts are like two fawns,
twins of a gazelle,(BM) that feed among the lilies.
Until the day breaks[ae]
and the shadows flee,(BN)
I will make my way to the mountain of myrrh
and the hill of frankincense.(BO)
You are absolutely beautiful,(BP) my darling;
there is no imperfection in you.

Come with me from Lebanon,[af](BQ) my bride;(BR)
come with me from Lebanon!
Descend from the peak of Amana,
from the summit of Senir and Hermon,(BS)
from the dens of the lions,
from the mountains of the leopards.
You have captured my heart,(BT) my sister,(BU) my bride.
You have captured my heart with one glance of your eyes,
with one jewel of your necklace.
10 How delightful your caresses are, my sister, my bride.
Your caresses are much better than wine,(BV)
and the fragrance of your perfume than any balsam.
11 Your lips drip sweetness like the honeycomb, my bride.(BW)
Honey and milk(BX) are under your tongue.
The fragrance of your garments is like the fragrance of Lebanon.

12 My sister, my bride, you are a locked garden—
a locked garden[ag] and a sealed spring.(BY)
13 Your branches are a paradise[ah] of pomegranates
with choicest fruits;(BZ)
henna with nard,
14 nard and saffron, calamus and cinnamon,(CA)
with all the trees of frankincense,(CB)
myrrh and aloes,(CC)
with all the best spices.
15 You are a garden spring,
a well of flowing water(CD)
streaming from Lebanon.

Woman

16 Awaken,(CE) north wind;
come, south wind.
Blow on my garden,
and spread the fragrance of its spices.
Let my love come to his garden
and eat its choicest fruits.(CF)

16 Thanks be to God, who put the same concern for you into the heart of Titus. 17 For he welcomed our appeal and, being very diligent, went out to you by his own choice. 18 We have sent with him the brother(A) who is praised among all the churches for his gospel ministry.[a] 19 And not only that, but he was also appointed by the churches to accompany us with this gracious gift that we are administering for the glory of the Lord himself and to show our eagerness to help. 20 We are taking this precaution so that no one will criticize us about this large sum that we are administering. 21 Indeed, we are giving careful thought(B) to do what is right,(C) not only before the Lord but also before people. 22 We have also sent with them our brother. We have often tested him in many circumstances and found him to be diligent—and now even more diligent because of his great confidence in you. 23 As for Titus, he is my partner(D) and coworker(E) for you; as for our brothers, they are the messengers(F) of the churches, the glory of Christ.(G) 24 Therefore, show them proof before the churches of your love and of our boasting(H) about you.

Psalm 50

Psalm 50

God as Judge

A psalm of Asaph.(A)

The Mighty One, God,[a] the Lord, speaks;
he summons the earth
from the rising of the sun to its setting.(B)
From Zion, the perfection of beauty,
God appears in radiance.[b](C)
Our God is coming; he will not be silent!
Devouring fire precedes him,
and a storm rages around him.(D)
On high, he summons heaven and earth
in order to judge his people:(E)
“Gather my faithful ones to me,
those who made a covenant with me by sacrifice.”(F)
The heavens proclaim his righteousness,(G)
for God is the Judge.(H)Selah

“Listen, my people, and I will speak;
I will testify against you, Israel.
I am God, your God.(I)
I do not rebuke you for your sacrifices
or for your burnt offerings,
which are continually before me.(J)
I will not take a bull from your household
or male goats from your pens,(K)
10 for every animal of the forest is mine,
the cattle on a thousand hills.
11 I know every bird of the mountains,
and the creatures of the field are mine.(L)
12 If I were hungry, I would not tell you,
for the world and everything in it is mine.(M)
13 Do I eat the flesh of bulls
or drink the blood of goats?(N)
14 Offer a thanksgiving sacrifice to God,(O)
and pay your vows to the Most High.(P)
15 Call on me in a day of trouble;
I will rescue you, and you will honor me.”(Q)

16 But God says to the wicked:
“What right do you have to recite my statutes
and to take my covenant on your lips?(R)
17 You hate instruction
and fling my words behind you.(S)
18 When you see a thief,
you make friends with him,
and you associate with adulterers.(T)
19 You unleash your mouth for evil
and harness your tongue for deceit.(U)
20 You sit, maligning your brother,
slandering your mother’s son.(V)
21 You have done these things, and I kept silent;
you thought I was just like you.(W)
But I will rebuke you
and lay out the case before you.[c](X)

22 “Understand this, you who forget God,
or I will tear you apart,
and there will be no one to rescue you.(Y)
23 Whoever offers a thanksgiving sacrifice honors me,
and whoever orders his conduct,
I will show him the salvation of God.”(Z)

Ecclesiastes 10:1-12:14, 2 Corinthians 8:1-15, Psalms 49:1-20, Proverbs 22:20-21

Today is the 5th day of September welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I am Brian it is great to be here with you as we reach the end of another one of our weeks together, this the first week of September, although we haven’t lived a full week of September yet. We’ll begin our first full week of September tomorrow, but here we are moving forward step-by-step day by day and it’s great to be here with you as we release another week, allow it to become a part of our history and consider all that God has spoken to us through His word in this week, which has been a lot. We’ve been working through Job, Ecclesiastes, working in…into and through the wisdom literature of the Bible. So, it’s been an incredibly enlightening. So, let’s continue. Let’s continue our journey by taking the next step forward. We’ve been reading from the New International Version this week, which is what we will do today. Ecclesiastes 10, 11 and 12 today.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word. We thank You for another week in Your word and we thank You for all that You bring up in a year in Your word. You touch every part of our lives. And, so, we open ourselves up to the things that You’re touching now, the things that You are bringing us through as You bring us through the different territory in the Scriptures. And, so as this week comes to a close, we release it, we let it go, it becomes a part of our memory, it becomes a part of our history. We are here now, and You are leading us forward and we are grateful beyond words. No matter what we have endured, no matter what we have gone through, no matter what the days bring us, no matter how hard they are we are breathing. You have given us the breath of life. We are here. And sometimes we lose sight of that because of what we’re enduring, and we think it’s bad when it’s good, it’s life, it’s a gift. And, so, we take this moment to acknowledge that with a grateful heart. Thank You for letting us be year now. And as we look to the future, we see only You there. We don’t know what we might face but we see You there and that’s what we need to know, You are there and You are here and You are God, And, so, come Holy Spirit as we move forward together. We pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hi guys this is Dave from Colorado. So, here I am, I was driving through Laramie Wyoming on my way home and just feeling a little disconnected and alone, isolated. You know, I am heading home but I do still have quite a ways to go. But yeah, I was listening to the podcast and a prayer came on for all the truckers. And I don’t know who you are sister, but that timing could not have been any better. For what it’s worth, it certainly lifted my spirits and, I don’t know, it’s kind of uncanny the way God works. But anyways thank you. I just want to say thank you for that prayer. That was really awesome. And also, my brother Mark Street, I want you to know that you’ve been in my prayers. I hope everything’s working out well for you. Keep us posted brother. All right family. I love you all and I’ll talk you all later. Bye.

Hello DAB family my name is Michael from Sarasota Florida and I’ve been listening since May of this year and the reading by Brian and thank goodness for Brian and his ministry. It has profoundly opened my eyes in my heart to God and the Bible. It’s August 29th and this reading in particular brought me to tears and resonated with me so profoundly, I can’t explain. But there are things going on in my life that I need this community and prayer. Brian, I want you to know that I love you and I will be here for you tomorrow and I am so thankful you are here for all of us. Thank you DAB family.

Candace from Oregon praying along now with my DAB family. Lord Jesus, King of all creation, beautiful Savior, Sovereign Lord, heavenly Father, Abba, Holy Spirit, we cry out to You Lord. We cry out to You on behalf of our amazing brother Mark Street from Australia. Would You be very near to him right now as he struggles with the recovery from a stroke? Would You heal him? And most of all would You just be incredibly close to him, speaking to his heart and mind and soul every step of the way? I pray Lord that You will be with Daniel Johnson Junior from Cleveland Ohio and that similarly You’ll be with him every step of the way as he looks to You for provision, for employment, for full employment in their family and provision. Lord, we know that nothing is too difficult for You. Be with my friend Beth Andre who is very, very week in fourth stage colon cancer. Lord, help us to keep our eyes on You no matter what. We love You so much and we’re so grateful to You Lord.

Hey, DABbers this is Katie in Kentucky and I’ve mentioned before that I often listen when I’m out running which is going on today. It’s Sunday, August 28th and I was out today listening to all the prayer requests and God just brought back to me something that happened years ago, and I just felt led to call in and share it as an encouragement. I was going through a time where I was working at a church camp and I was being moved to another church camp and I was concerned about everything I put into the first place and moving on. And I saw this beautiful sunrise and then I turned a corner and it like changed and it was like this…almost like this second beautiful moment. And what God spoke to me then was something beautiful happened in the past, I’ve got something beautiful coming up in your future too. And, so, I just wanted to share that encouragement for everybody who’s maybe going through changes and you don’t know how it’s going to play out or something is ending in your life and you’re looking at how things are going to change and move forward. God sent something beautiful in the past and there’s something beautiful and miraculous and wonderful around the corner that he’s gonna bring again. So, I don’t know who all needs to hear that, but I just felt God leading me to call that in and share it. And I know that I actually personally needed that reminder as I’m looking at some changes as well. So, I love you guys. Every prayer request that’s played I’m just…my heart’s bursting for you and, yeah, I love you guys and I’m praying along with you. Bye.

Hi Daily Audio Bible this is Carolyn here. This is my first time calling in, but I’ve been a listener for years now. I just really need prayer. I am the caregiver of my father, moved both my parents in with me a year ago and my mom was in hospice care and passed away in January. My only sibling passed away two months later in March and my father is understandably depressed but even more so he’s just angry and miserable and he doesn’t seem to see that he needs to be cared for and can no longer live on his own. He’s getting ready to turn 92 and I’m just exhausted mentally, spiritually. I just feel like I’m under attack. All the peace and joy has been stolen from my home and I just want to surrender it all to God and to just stop feeling this way. So, if you could please just say a prayer for me. Thank you all. Love you Brian.

Hello, DABbers I am a new listener. I called in earlier to pray for some people and now I’m calling to ask for prayer for myself, A New Day in Florida. It’s been really hard during these times. I lost my husband in a violent motorcycle accident four years ago and then my mom the year after him to Alzheimer’s and then when we had a storm here in Florida, Erma, I actually fell and broke my ankle and had to have surgeries to install hardware and I don’t have children. I have a sister but since my mom’s death we’ve been kind of estranged. We’re working on it. But I feel very alone, very alone and I am just asking for prayer that the Lord would fill those places for me. I have a number of things I have to do on the house, repairs and renovations and I’m just so lost without my husband and how to do these things and attack them. So, I just want to ask for everyone’s prayer and thank you so much. I…I was so blessed to have stumbled across this app and God bless…

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Saturday September 5, 2020 (NIV)

Ecclesiastes 10-12

10 As dead flies give perfume a bad smell,
so a little folly(A) outweighs wisdom and honor.
The heart of the wise inclines to the right,
but the heart of the fool to the left.
Even as fools walk along the road,
they lack sense
and show everyone(B) how stupid they are.
If a ruler’s anger rises against you,
do not leave your post;(C)
calmness can lay great offenses to rest.(D)

There is an evil I have seen under the sun,
the sort of error that arises from a ruler:
Fools are put in many high positions,(E)
while the rich occupy the low ones.
I have seen slaves on horseback,
while princes go on foot like slaves.(F)

Whoever digs a pit may fall into it;(G)
whoever breaks through a wall may be bitten by a snake.(H)
Whoever quarries stones may be injured by them;
whoever splits logs may be endangered by them.(I)

10 If the ax is dull
and its edge unsharpened,
more strength is needed,
but skill will bring success.

11 If a snake bites before it is charmed,
the charmer receives no fee.(J)

12 Words from the mouth of the wise are gracious,(K)
but fools are consumed by their own lips.(L)
13 At the beginning their words are folly;
at the end they are wicked madness—
14 and fools multiply words.(M)

No one knows what is coming—
who can tell someone else what will happen after them?(N)

15 The toil of fools wearies them;
they do not know the way to town.

16 Woe to the land whose king was a servant[a](O)
and whose princes feast in the morning.
17 Blessed is the land whose king is of noble birth
and whose princes eat at a proper time—
for strength and not for drunkenness.(P)

18 Through laziness, the rafters sag;
because of idle hands, the house leaks.(Q)

19 A feast is made for laughter,
wine(R) makes life merry,
and money is the answer for everything.

20 Do not revile the king(S) even in your thoughts,
or curse the rich in your bedroom,
because a bird in the sky may carry your words,
and a bird on the wing may report what you say.

Invest in Many Ventures

11 Ship(T) your grain across the sea;
after many days you may receive a return.(U)
Invest in seven ventures, yes, in eight;
you do not know what disaster may come upon the land.

If clouds are full of water,
they pour rain on the earth.
Whether a tree falls to the south or to the north,
in the place where it falls, there it will lie.
Whoever watches the wind will not plant;
whoever looks at the clouds will not reap.

As you do not know the path of the wind,(V)
or how the body is formed[b] in a mother’s womb,(W)
so you cannot understand the work of God,
the Maker of all things.

Sow your seed in the morning,
and at evening let your hands not be idle,(X)
for you do not know which will succeed,
whether this or that,
or whether both will do equally well.

Remember Your Creator While Young

Light is sweet,
and it pleases the eyes to see the sun.(Y)
However many years anyone may live,
let them enjoy them all.
But let them remember(Z) the days of darkness,
for there will be many.
Everything to come is meaningless.

You who are young, be happy while you are young,
and let your heart give you joy in the days of your youth.
Follow the ways of your heart
and whatever your eyes see,
but know that for all these things
God will bring you into judgment.(AA)
10 So then, banish anxiety(AB) from your heart
and cast off the troubles of your body,
for youth and vigor are meaningless.(AC)

12 Remember(AD) your Creator
in the days of your youth,
before the days of trouble(AE) come
and the years approach when you will say,
“I find no pleasure in them”—
before the sun and the light
and the moon and the stars grow dark,
and the clouds return after the rain;
when the keepers of the house tremble,
and the strong men stoop,
when the grinders cease because they are few,
and those looking through the windows grow dim;
when the doors to the street are closed
and the sound of grinding fades;
when people rise up at the sound of birds,
but all their songs grow faint;(AF)
when people are afraid of heights
and of dangers in the streets;
when the almond tree blossoms
and the grasshopper drags itself along
and desire no longer is stirred.
Then people go to their eternal home(AG)
and mourners(AH) go about the streets.

Remember him—before the silver cord is severed,
and the golden bowl is broken;
before the pitcher is shattered at the spring,
and the wheel broken at the well,
and the dust returns(AI) to the ground it came from,
and the spirit returns to God(AJ) who gave it.(AK)

“Meaningless! Meaningless!” says the Teacher.[c](AL)
“Everything is meaningless!(AM)

The Conclusion of the Matter

Not only was the Teacher wise, but he also imparted knowledge to the people. He pondered and searched out and set in order many proverbs.(AN) 10 The Teacher(AO) searched to find just the right words, and what he wrote was upright and true.(AP)

11 The words of the wise are like goads, their collected sayings like firmly embedded nails(AQ)—given by one shepherd.[d] 12 Be warned, my son, of anything in addition to them.

Of making many books there is no end, and much study wearies the body.(AR)

13 Now all has been heard;
here is the conclusion of the matter:
Fear God(AS) and keep his commandments,(AT)
for this is the duty of all mankind.(AU)
14 For God will bring every deed into judgment,(AV)
including every hidden thing,(AW)
whether it is good or evil.

2 Corinthians 8:1-15

The Collection for the Lord’s People

And now, brothers and sisters, we want you to know about the grace that God has given the Macedonian(A) churches. In the midst of a very severe trial, their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity.(B) For I testify that they gave as much as they were able,(C) and even beyond their ability. Entirely on their own, they urgently pleaded with us for the privilege of sharing(D) in this service(E) to the Lord’s people.(F) And they exceeded our expectations: They gave themselves first of all to the Lord, and then by the will of God also to us. So we urged(G) Titus,(H) just as he had earlier made a beginning, to bring also to completion(I) this act of grace on your part. But since you excel in everything(J)—in faith, in speech, in knowledge,(K) in complete earnestness and in the love we have kindled in you[a]—see that you also excel in this grace of giving.

I am not commanding you,(L) but I want to test the sincerity of your love by comparing it with the earnestness of others. For you know the grace(M) of our Lord Jesus Christ,(N) that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor,(O) so that you through his poverty might become rich.(P)

10 And here is my judgment(Q) about what is best for you in this matter. Last year you were the first not only to give but also to have the desire to do so.(R) 11 Now finish the work, so that your eager willingness(S) to do it may be matched by your completion of it, according to your means. 12 For if the willingness is there, the gift is acceptable according to what one has,(T) not according to what one does not have.

13 Our desire is not that others might be relieved while you are hard pressed, but that there might be equality. 14 At the present time your plenty will supply what they need,(U) so that in turn their plenty will supply what you need. The goal is equality, 15 as it is written: “The one who gathered much did not have too much, and the one who gathered little did not have too little.”[b](V)

Psalm 49

Psalm 49[a]

For the director of music. Of the Sons of Korah. A psalm.

Hear(A) this, all you peoples;(B)
listen, all who live in this world,(C)
both low and high,(D)
rich and poor alike:
My mouth will speak words of wisdom;(E)
the meditation of my heart will give you understanding.(F)
I will turn my ear to a proverb;(G)
with the harp(H) I will expound my riddle:(I)

Why should I fear(J) when evil days come,
when wicked deceivers surround me—
those who trust in their wealth(K)
and boast(L) of their great riches?(M)
No one can redeem the life of another
or give to God a ransom for them—
the ransom(N) for a life is costly,
no payment is ever enough—(O)
so that they should live on(P) forever
and not see decay.(Q)
10 For all can see that the wise die,(R)
that the foolish and the senseless(S) also perish,
leaving their wealth(T) to others.(U)
11 Their tombs(V) will remain their houses[b] forever,
their dwellings for endless generations,(W)
though they had[c] named(X) lands after themselves.

12 People, despite their wealth, do not endure;(Y)
they are like the beasts that perish.(Z)

13 This is the fate of those who trust in themselves,(AA)
and of their followers, who approve their sayings.[d]
14 They are like sheep and are destined(AB) to die;(AC)
death will be their shepherd
(but the upright will prevail(AD) over them in the morning).
Their forms will decay in the grave,
far from their princely mansions.
15 But God will redeem me from the realm of the dead;(AE)
he will surely take me to himself.(AF)
16 Do not be overawed when others grow rich,
when the splendor of their houses increases;
17 for they will take nothing(AG) with them when they die,
their splendor will not descend with them.(AH)
18 Though while they live they count themselves blessed—(AI)
and people praise you when you prosper—
19 they will join those who have gone before them,(AJ)
who will never again see the light(AK) of life.

20 People who have wealth but lack understanding(AL)
are like the beasts that perish.(AM)

Ecclesiastes 7:1-9:18, 2 Corinthians 7:8-16, Psalms 48:1-14, Proverbs 22:17-19

Today is the 4th day of September welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I’m Brian it is great to be here with you today. I can’t believe it’s September already. Truly, for a year that felt like it was going to drag on or is dragging on forever, it’s like…we’re in September already. It's…it’s crazy but we’re moving into it, we’re getting settled into it and we have the Bible to escort us through the gates of every single day and week and month. And right now, the Bible is leading us to the book of Ecclesiastes, which is…yeah…the exploration of the meaninglessness of whatever we might pursue in life even if we get it all but don’t acknowledge God and it. So, let’s dive in. We’re reading from the New International Version this week. Ecclesiastes 7, 8, and 9 today.

Commentary:

Okay. Let’s talk about sorrow for a minute. One of our favorite things to talk about talk about, right? Like let’s talk about it all the time, every day. No…sorrow…sorrow what does that bring up in you? Like what…what does that word evoke? I guess we could say sorrow in many ways is some of the things that we’re seeing in the book of Ecclesiastes. Sorrow is attached to a lot of things like regret or grieving or…or whatever, pain, suffering. Do you ever think though sorrow is a good thing? Like normally we don’t ever think that sorrow is a good thing even though sorrow is kind of a baseline. Like it is at the bed rock of things. Like when we are experiencing sorrow, we certainly may have erratic emotions, but sorrow exposes what’s really going on. And sorrow is something that the apostle Paul is talking about today in second Corinthians and we just never think about embracing sorrow because we see it as a bad thing. And, so, we’re like, “I only want good things in my life and sorrow isn’t one of them” even though sorrow can bring us back into goodness. So, I gotta confess. Like I don't…I just don’t ever wake up…I may wake up in the morning feeling sorrow but I don’t ever wake up in the morning feeling great and thinking, “yeah…let me get my coffee so I can just…I want to…I want to see how quickly I can get into sorrow.” Like nobody does. And we wouldn’t be able to say that the apostle Paul never experienced sorrow because we've…we’re spending time in his letters, we read of his journeys in the book of Acts. Like this guy experienced suffering and sorrow all over the place, not just externally like from opposition to the message but also internally when there’s conflict in the churches and he’s just trying to hold things together and he’s experiencing sorrow because of the way that people are accusing him of something or there’s just not getting along or they’re straying from the message. So, we would have to say the apostle Paul experienced plenty of sorrow. But Paul in his mindset doesn’t have sorrow as an only bad sensation. So, let me quote Paul from second Corinthians today. “Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death.” Okay. So, Paul is saying there is a godly sorrow. We might call that at a…a sensation of conviction, the sensation that we get when we know we have stepped over the line in some area of our lives willingly. We did this thing. We regret what we have done. We can see perhaps the repercussions that are coming at us like a wave and we can turn into worldly earthly sorrow because of…because of what might or might not happen because of what we’ve done, but there is a godly sorrow, one that tells us this is not who I am, this is not who I want to be, this is not the way I want to go, this is not the path my life should be taking. To enter into godly sorrow then that should, that awareness should be frustrating and disappointing, should bring us grief, it should feel distressing. Like it should feel like we’re losing something important. When we…when we walk into sin willfully, like clearly, we should experience the weight of the choices that we are making and what is happening because we are stopping in its tracks the work of God in our lives. Like literally, we are halting sanctification. We are pushing stop on the forward progress of being transformed. We are halting it willingly and saying, “right now I’m doing my own thing. Right now I’m going to follow the path of evil in some way. I’m gonna willingly walk into the darkness. I’m gonna willingly walk the pathway that leads to death.” Okay if we’re gonna do that then we are betraying life. That should not feel good. It should not be something that we associate with wholeness or being healthy. It should bring us sorrow because the way Paul puts it, “this kind of godly sorrow leads us away from…from sin, from darkness, from evil and it results in our salvation.” So, if we’re gonna walk away from God in some way, instead of running toward God then…that…we should feel sorrow and that sorrow should lead us to repentance. And repentance is to change, literally to change your mind, like to go in the other direction. It should lead us to repentance. We should feel this separation that we don’t ever want to feel again. So, let’s enter into that today. We have a no shortage of things to feel sorrow about. But let’s focus our attention and awareness on the Holy Spirit’s leading, the things that bring us sorrow because we have walked away from life. Let’s feel the weight of that. Let’s think of what Solomon is saying in Ecclesiastes because as sobering is what he is saying is, he’s still saying the truth. We all we all die. That is the ultimate destiny of each one of us. Our faith informs life beyond this one and we believe this, I believe this, but we all die an earthly death. Why would we walk the pathway to death and foolishness and folly? We should feel sorrow when we’re walking that path. We’re wasting time in this brief moment as Solomon kind of puts before face. It’s not a lengthy indefinite period of time that we get to be in this human body and have the experience of life on planet Earth. Why waste it in the darkness? So, let’s invite the Holy Spirit into that.

Prayer:

Holy Spirit come, well up from within us. We…we have tried to mix light and darkness so much that it’s almost like commonplace. And yet there is a way. There is a path that leads to life. It’s narrow, few find it, but we want to be one who does, which means we have to pay attention to the path we are on and where the road is going. And if we know we are walking into darkness, then the path only goes into the darkness and the end of that road is death. We want to walk the road that leads to life. Come Holy Spirit and show us places within that we are willingly bringing sorrow upon ourselves because we are willingly interrupting what You are doing within us. Come Holy Spirit, we open ourselves to You and we meditate upon this as we move through this day. Lead us as we consider. We ask in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Ecclesiastes 7-9

Wisdom

A good name is better than fine perfume,(A)
and the day of death better than the day of birth.(B)
It is better to go to a house of mourning
than to go to a house of feasting,
for death(C) is the destiny(D) of everyone;
the living should take this to heart.
Frustration is better than laughter,(E)
because a sad face is good for the heart.
The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning,
but the heart of fools is in the house of pleasure.(F)
It is better to heed the rebuke(G) of a wise person
than to listen to the song of fools.
Like the crackling of thorns(H) under the pot,
so is the laughter(I) of fools.
This too is meaningless.

Extortion turns a wise person into a fool,
and a bribe(J) corrupts the heart.

The end of a matter is better than its beginning,
and patience(K) is better than pride.
Do not be quickly provoked(L) in your spirit,
for anger resides in the lap of fools.(M)

10 Do not say, “Why were the old days(N) better than these?”
For it is not wise to ask such questions.

11 Wisdom, like an inheritance, is a good thing(O)
and benefits those who see the sun.(P)
12 Wisdom is a shelter
as money is a shelter,
but the advantage of knowledge is this:
Wisdom preserves those who have it.

13 Consider what God has done:(Q)

Who can straighten
what he has made crooked?(R)
14 When times are good, be happy;
but when times are bad, consider this:
God has made the one
as well as the other.(S)
Therefore, no one can discover
anything about their future.

15 In this meaningless life(T) of mine I have seen both of these:

the righteous perishing in their righteousness,
and the wicked living long in their wickedness.(U)
16 Do not be overrighteous,
neither be overwise—
why destroy yourself?
17 Do not be overwicked,
and do not be a fool—
why die before your time?(V)
18 It is good to grasp the one
and not let go of the other.
Whoever fears God(W) will avoid all extremes.[a]

19 Wisdom(X) makes one wise person more powerful(Y)
than ten rulers in a city.

20 Indeed, there is no one on earth who is righteous,(Z)
no one who does what is right and never sins.(AA)

21 Do not pay attention to every word people say,
or you(AB) may hear your servant cursing you—
22 for you know in your heart
that many times you yourself have cursed others.

23 All this I tested by wisdom and I said,

“I am determined to be wise”(AC)
but this was beyond me.
24 Whatever exists is far off and most profound—
who can discover it?(AD)
25 So I turned my mind to understand,
to investigate and to search out wisdom and the scheme of things(AE)
and to understand the stupidity of wickedness
and the madness of folly.(AF)

26 I find more bitter than death
the woman who is a snare,(AG)
whose heart is a trap
and whose hands are chains.
The man who pleases God will escape her,
but the sinner she will ensnare.(AH)

27 “Look,” says the Teacher,[b](AI) “this is what I have discovered:

“Adding one thing to another to discover the scheme of things—
28 while I was still searching
but not finding—
I found one upright man among a thousand,
but not one upright woman(AJ) among them all.
29 This only have I found:
God created mankind upright,
but they have gone in search of many schemes.”

Who is like the wise?
Who knows the explanation of things?
A person’s wisdom brightens their face
and changes its hard appearance.

Obey the King

Obey the king’s command, I say, because you took an oath before God. Do not be in a hurry to leave the king’s presence.(AK) Do not stand up for a bad cause, for he will do whatever he pleases. Since a king’s word is supreme, who can say to him, “What are you doing?(AL)

Whoever obeys his command will come to no harm,
and the wise heart will know the proper time and procedure.
For there is a proper time and procedure for every matter,(AM)
though a person may be weighed down by misery.

Since no one knows the future,
who can tell someone else what is to come?
As no one has power over the wind to contain it,
so[c] no one has power over the time of their death.
As no one is discharged in time of war,
so wickedness will not release those who practice it.

All this I saw, as I applied my mind to everything done under the sun. There is a time when a man lords it over others to his own[d] hurt. 10 Then too, I saw the wicked buried(AN)—those who used to come and go from the holy place and receive praise[e] in the city where they did this. This too is meaningless.

11 When the sentence for a crime is not quickly carried out, people’s hearts are filled with schemes to do wrong. 12 Although a wicked person who commits a hundred crimes may live a long time, I know that it will go better(AO) with those who fear God,(AP) who are reverent before him.(AQ) 13 Yet because the wicked do not fear God,(AR) it will not go well with them, and their days(AS) will not lengthen like a shadow.

14 There is something else meaningless that occurs on earth: the righteous who get what the wicked deserve, and the wicked who get what the righteous deserve.(AT) This too, I say, is meaningless.(AU) 15 So I commend the enjoyment of life(AV), because there is nothing better for a person under the sun than to eat and drink(AW) and be glad.(AX) Then joy will accompany them in their toil all the days of the life God has given them under the sun.

16 When I applied my mind to know wisdom(AY) and to observe the labor that is done on earth(AZ)—people getting no sleep day or night— 17 then I saw all that God has done.(BA) No one can comprehend what goes on under the sun. Despite all their efforts to search it out, no one can discover its meaning. Even if the wise claim they know, they cannot really comprehend it.(BB)

A Common Destiny for All

So I reflected on all this and concluded that the righteous and the wise and what they do are in God’s hands, but no one knows whether love or hate awaits them.(BC) All share a common destiny—the righteous and the wicked, the good and the bad,[f] the clean and the unclean, those who offer sacrifices and those who do not.

As it is with the good,
so with the sinful;
as it is with those who take oaths,
so with those who are afraid to take them.(BD)

This is the evil in everything that happens under the sun: The same destiny overtakes all.(BE) The hearts of people, moreover, are full of evil and there is madness in their hearts while they live,(BF) and afterward they join the dead.(BG) Anyone who is among the living has hope[g]—even a live dog is better off than a dead lion!

For the living know that they will die,
but the dead know nothing;(BH)
they have no further reward,
and even their name(BI) is forgotten.(BJ)
Their love, their hate
and their jealousy have long since vanished;
never again will they have a part
in anything that happens under the sun.(BK)

Go, eat your food with gladness, and drink your wine(BL) with a joyful heart,(BM) for God has already approved what you do. Always be clothed in white,(BN) and always anoint your head with oil. Enjoy life with your wife,(BO) whom you love, all the days of this meaningless life that God has given you under the sun—all your meaningless days. For this is your lot(BP) in life and in your toilsome labor under the sun. 10 Whatever(BQ) your hand finds to do, do it with all your might,(BR) for in the realm of the dead,(BS) where you are going, there is neither working nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom.(BT)

11 I have seen something else under the sun:

The race is not to the swift
or the battle to the strong,(BU)
nor does food come to the wise(BV)
or wealth to the brilliant
or favor to the learned;
but time and chance(BW) happen to them all.(BX)

12 Moreover, no one knows when their hour will come:

As fish are caught in a cruel net,
or birds are taken in a snare,
so people are trapped by evil times(BY)
that fall unexpectedly upon them.(BZ)

Wisdom Better Than Folly

13 I also saw under the sun this example of wisdom(CA) that greatly impressed me: 14 There was once a small city with only a few people in it. And a powerful king came against it, surrounded it and built huge siege works against it. 15 Now there lived in that city a man poor but wise, and he saved the city by his wisdom. But nobody remembered that poor man.(CB) 16 So I said, “Wisdom is better than strength.” But the poor man’s wisdom is despised, and his words are no longer heeded.(CC)

17 The quiet words of the wise are more to be heeded
than the shouts of a ruler of fools.
18 Wisdom(CD) is better than weapons of war,
but one sinner destroys much good.

2 Corinthians 7:8-16

Even if I caused you sorrow by my letter,(A) I do not regret it. Though I did regret it—I see that my letter hurt you, but only for a little while— yet now I am happy, not because you were made sorry, but because your sorrow led you to repentance. For you became sorrowful as God intended and so were not harmed in any way by us. 10 Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation(B) and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death. 11 See what this godly sorrow has produced in you: what earnestness, what eagerness to clear yourselves, what indignation, what alarm, what longing, what concern,(C) what readiness to see justice done. At every point you have proved yourselves to be innocent in this matter. 12 So even though I wrote to you,(D) it was neither on account of the one who did the wrong(E) nor on account of the injured party, but rather that before God you could see for yourselves how devoted to us you are. 13 By all this we are encouraged.

In addition to our own encouragement, we were especially delighted to see how happy Titus(F) was, because his spirit has been refreshed by all of you. 14 I had boasted to him about you,(G) and you have not embarrassed me. But just as everything we said to you was true, so our boasting about you to Titus(H) has proved to be true as well. 15 And his affection for you is all the greater when he remembers that you were all obedient,(I) receiving him with fear and trembling.(J) 16 I am glad I can have complete confidence in you.(K)

Psalm 48

Psalm 48[a]

A song. A psalm of the Sons of Korah.

Great is the Lord,(A) and most worthy of praise,(B)
in the city of our God,(C) his holy mountain.(D)

Beautiful(E) in its loftiness,
the joy of the whole earth,
like the heights of Zaphon[b](F) is Mount Zion,(G)
the city of the Great King.(H)
God is in her citadels;(I)
he has shown himself to be her fortress.(J)

When the kings joined forces,
when they advanced together,(K)
they saw her and were astounded;
they fled in terror.(L)
Trembling seized(M) them there,
pain like that of a woman in labor.(N)
You destroyed them like ships of Tarshish(O)
shattered by an east wind.(P)

As we have heard,
so we have seen
in the city of the Lord Almighty,
in the city of our God:
God makes her secure
forever.[c](Q)

Within your temple, O God,
we meditate(R) on your unfailing love.(S)
10 Like your name,(T) O God,
your praise reaches to the ends of the earth;(U)
your right hand is filled with righteousness.
11 Mount Zion rejoices,
the villages of Judah are glad
because of your judgments.(V)

12 Walk about Zion, go around her,
count her towers,(W)
13 consider well her ramparts,(X)
view her citadels,(Y)
that you may tell of them
to the next generation.(Z)

14 For this God is our God for ever and ever;
he will be our guide(AA) even to the end.

Proverbs 22:17-19

Thirty Sayings of the Wise

Saying 1

17 Pay attention(A) and turn your ear to the sayings of the wise;(B)

Ecclesiastes 4:1-6:12, 2 Corinthians 6:14-7:7, Psalms 47:1-9, Proverbs 22:16

Today is the 3rd day of September welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I’m Brian it is…it is a joy to be here with you today as we exhale, as I say often. Let it all go, it’ll all be waiting but we need a change of atmosphere. And, so, we come around the Global Campfire and we let God’s word wash over us, wash into us and then we go back with a new perspective into what we were doing into the world and what a joy it is that we can do this together. So, let’s take that next step. We began the book of Ecclesiastes yesterday and we’re gonna continue that journey today. We’re reading from the New International Version this week. Ecclesiastes 4, 5, and 6 today.

Commentary:

Alright. So, in second Corinthians today Paul is essentially talking about or unpacking the fact that there are…there are things that will never be in harmony with each other. He says, “what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? What fellowship can light have with darkness? What harmony is there between Christ and Belial?” Belial is this word that simply means, like worthlessness or maybe meaningless. “What harmony is there between Christ and that which has no value? What does a believer have in common with an unbeliever?” We could push back on that and say, “well a believer and an unbeliever, their human beings. There’s a lot in common.” But in Paul’s view, those who believe are new creatures, new creations, which for Paul isn’t like a reset, like a restart of humanity. It’s a different kind of species, like a new humanity upon the earth, one that has been restored and made righteous before God, a different kind of thing of which Jesus was the firstborn which we’ve already talked about. Paul’s talking about all this in the context of not being yoked together with unbelievers. And if you have the choice you shouldn’t. I mean my two cents on that, which is probably worth about two cents is that life is a winding road and marriage is difficult enough as it is. With no faith to fall back on…O…that’s very difficult. But what Paul is saying is also beyond just whether or not you should marry an unbeliever. This goes to Paul’s philosophy in general. We are new creatures upon this earth part of God’s divine family knit together as a body, the body of Christ. And basically trying to live with one foot in the world as a person who has already died to it while keeping one foot in this new creation that we are living into is essentially the same as God inviting His chosen people to separate themselves so that they become…can become a nation of priests to the rest of the world. And we read that story already and we saw what that mixture did. It all fell apart. So, why do we often find ourselves in a position where we did…where basically we’re wondering, “how dark…how much of the…like how much into the shade can I go, like before the actual darkness…like how far into the darkness can I go, while remaining in the light?” When Paul deals with these kinds of issues he’s basically saying, “why would you do that? Why would you do that?” And it’s fair. Like why would we do that? Why do we do that? Why do I do that? Like, why are we doing this?” Because like borrowing from Solomon, it’s meaningless. It’s chasing the wind. And, so, Paul gives words of encouragement. And I quote Paul. “Therefore, since we have these promises dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God. And, so, we find that the Scriptures have led us to consider like what is the defiling us. What are we allowing to contaminate the new creature that we have been made? What are we allowing to tell us who we are? Because if it’s not our faith in God then we are chasing the wind. And, once again we find Paul saying it’s a bigger story, like “look higher. Live into this. Be righteous because you can now. You can be holy, be set apart, because you can be in union with God because you can, He’s your father, you are adopted into His family. Don’t waste this gift, don’t waste your life. And the pollution that you once lived in, you don’t have to do that

Prayer:

Father, once again we find ourselves challenged, we find the Bible being a mirror and forcing us to look at ourselves and we thank You for that. It shakes us. It disrupts us. It’s necessary. It’s You, Fathering us. It’s You, loving us and saying there’s more. And, so, we reach for You and invite Your Holy Spirit to show us the ways that we’re trying to mix things up in unhealthy ways with…with things that can never be in harmony with one another. We need You. We need You alone. We need Your Holy Spirit to guide us into all truth. And we trust in that promise that You will. Come Holy Spirit in the name of Jesus, we ask. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

I’m basking in the spirit and I’m still lying in my bed
the sun has not yet risen and I’m very glad that I’m not dead
it’s quiet and it’s dark and it seems the world is still asleep
but I feel you all around me God inside too real deep
it feels just like I’m glowing and I know that can’t be true
pre-dawn is my favorite time to come in prayer to you
there are no real distractions no voices cars or lights
no human interference no arguments or fights
only me reflecting thoughts that spring from deep within
thoughts now filled with gratitude that used to be about sin
I come to you for power I come to you for grace
I come to you my father because there really is no other place
I lift you up for what you’ve done because you’ve done so much for me
I praise you God for who you are and how you set me free
it seems like I can’t get enough of praising you each day
the closer that I get to you the more I love to pray
thank you God for lifting me, for loving me, for setting free
I thank you God my eyes can see a concept like eternity
the suns now up and I’m still in prayer
I still can feel you everywhere
inside outside all around even deep below the ground
because you Are truly awesome

blindtony1016@gmail.com. I’d like to give a shout out to God’s Smiles and Peter and Gentle Ben and Rebecca from Michigan. Know you are all loved and prayed for daily. And once again, Brian and the Hardin family, thank you for this wonderful podcast for God’s Holy Spirit flow. Keep it flowing y’all. All right, bye-bye.

Hello this is Duncan the Piano Man from Fredericksburg Texas this on Sunday morning August 30th. Lincoln my prayers are for you. Let me pray right now. You’re the uppermost in my mind. A number of you have had deaths in your family this week from the terrible virus that we’re all dealing with. But for people to stay together for marriages to stay together I am burdened especially today. My wife and I went through 43 years of marriage and we had a lot of stormy times. God brought us through though and it will be a year in October that she’ll have been with the Lord in eternity. So, let me pray now Father before this thing runs out. I just pray for Lincoln and his wife. Father I am just praying that You would soften her heart. Lincoln wants so much for this marriage to stay together. And Father they’re still Young at and I don’t know if they have any children, but I bring him to You Lord Jesus. Also, Father that that marriage would be mended, and that marriage would be strengthened, and they would just stay together till death do them part. And Father that they would grow together in You. Quicken that spirit Lord. Father pray for also that lady in New York who is behind financially and a lot of things and deals with mental issues and also has no work. And Lord there’s probably a lot of other things. Be merciful to them Jesus. Thank You for hearing our prayer. Father I…we love You and we leave love each other in You. Thank You, Lord. Amen.

Good morning family. Hey, I had a revelation this morning. I every morning do the Daily Prayer which you can access on the app under the navigation bar under helpful links. And I’ve been doing it…well…for almost 2 years now every morning faithfully and I can’t tell you what a difference it’s made in my life. I really recommend it. What I thought this morning and I believe the Holy Spirit gave me was this is a prayer that is so socked full of what we need to know about our relationship with God that every morning you’re reviewing it and it gives God the opportunity to speak into your heart. So, that’s what the spiritual disciplines do. They in themselves do not make you holy or righteous or anything, they just give God the opportunity to pour like a faucet into your soul. And, so, one that I really appreciate too is solitude because it allows me to just sit and muse with God all day. Anyway, I better take off now. I just wanted to share that with you. Please during this really heartbreaking time in our country it’s…it’s so important to get everything straight, get your plumb line straight with God and have a clear conscience. It’s worth everything. Okay kids. Bye.

Hi this is Kristi from Kentucky this is about the eighth time I’ve tried to record this. It’s kind of difficult. I’ve been listening for 12 years and the first time I’ve ever called in for prayer. I put this on a Prayer Wall about a year ago but I’m still…I’m still patiently or impatiently waiting sometimes. I was involved in a Christian community in Ohio where I have two children that are still there. I was involved with them for many years. I lived there for a couple years but when I moved in, I saw that they were becoming increasingly more controlling over people’s time, their money, their interactions outside of the community and who they could speak to and who they couldn’t. And I saw red flags. Anybody that leaves is deemed either a sinner in love with the world or mentally ill. And, so, out of all of the years that they’ve been in existence only like five or six people that have left are actually in any kind of relationship with the church and most people in community aren’t even allowed to talk to them, which has happened to the two of my children and me. Since I left it has been, it’s been really ugly. It took me a year of some intense biblical counseling to really recover emotionally, spiritually. But my children are still there, and they refuse to have any relationship with me or to pursue restoration of any kind. I haven’t spoken to my daughter since December…it’ll be two years in December. I’d ask you to join me in prayer for all truth to be revealed whether it’s myself or them, all the darkness be revealed, and light come into that darkness. People are set free in Jesus’ name.

Hi, my names Sam from Texas and just calling in because…express my gratitude for this community, for this…Brian and everybody that listens in. About a year ago I found this just wanting to, you know, have the word of God, you know, to hear it in my life every day and now it’s…it’s…it’s a staple of my day. You know, I start my day before I put anything else into this mind, I put this podcast in this word of God. Prayer requests. Could you all please lift up my church community in Allen Texas? We…we’re going through a…a lawsuit. And not to get into any details but just lift up my pastor, his name is Dustin and the leadership. You know, sometimes you gotta rip off the Band-Aid to heal and I know the situations gonna be handled by God and He’s gonna get the glory. Another prayer request I have is for a new believer, her name is Taylor. She’s an alcoholic. She’s just got 60 days sober yesterday by the grace of God and I…I praise him for that. You know she came to the Lord about 3, 4 weeks ago, you know, and the Lord’s really been knocking on her on her door and seeking her her whole life. And I was in a previous relationship with her but I had to make a decision to end it so that she could focus on herself and I could also focus on myself because me and God get some business to do and I’m grateful for that. You know, just lift up Taylor and her recovery that she has a spiritual experience with the Almighty God and Jesus could continue to enter her heart, softens her heart and her mind to Him. Thank you, guys. Have a blessed day.

This is my second time prayer requesting. My names Ryan Kelleher I live in Santa Barbara California and my heart’s heavy and I’ve had a long journey of…I want to say mental illness but I’m not even sure. I just thought I’d reach out and receive some…some prayer. Thanks guys.

Ecclesiastes 4-6

Oppression, Toil, Friendlessness

Again I looked and saw all the oppression(A) that was taking place under the sun:

I saw the tears of the oppressed—
and they have no comforter;
power was on the side of their oppressors—
and they have no comforter.(B)
And I declared that the dead,(C)
who had already died,
are happier than the living,
who are still alive.(D)
But better than both
is the one who has never been born,(E)
who has not seen the evil
that is done under the sun.(F)

And I saw that all toil and all achievement spring from one person’s envy of another. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.(G)

Fools fold their hands(H)
and ruin themselves.
Better one handful with tranquillity
than two handfuls with toil(I)
and chasing after the wind.

Again I saw something meaningless under the sun:

There was a man all alone;
he had neither son nor brother.
There was no end to his toil,
yet his eyes were not content(J) with his wealth.
“For whom am I toiling,” he asked,
“and why am I depriving myself of enjoyment?”
This too is meaningless—
a miserable business!

Two are better than one,
because they have a good return for their labor:
10 If either of them falls down,
one can help the other up.
But pity anyone who falls
and has no one to help them up.
11 Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm.
But how can one keep warm alone?
12 Though one may be overpowered,
two can defend themselves.
A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.

Advancement Is Meaningless

13 Better a poor but wise youth than an old but foolish king who no longer knows how to heed a warning. 14 The youth may have come from prison to the kingship, or he may have been born in poverty within his kingdom. 15 I saw that all who lived and walked under the sun followed the youth, the king’s successor. 16 There was no end to all the people who were before them. But those who came later were not pleased with the successor. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.

Fulfill Your Vow to God

[a]Guard your steps when you go to the house of God. Go near to listen rather than to offer the sacrifice of fools, who do not know that they do wrong.

Do not be quick with your mouth,
do not be hasty in your heart
to utter anything before God.(K)
God is in heaven
and you are on earth,
so let your words be few.(L)
A dream(M) comes when there are many cares,
and many words mark the speech of a fool.(N)

When you make a vow to God, do not delay to fulfill it.(O) He has no pleasure in fools; fulfill your vow.(P) It is better not to make a vow than to make one and not fulfill it.(Q) Do not let your mouth lead you into sin. And do not protest to the temple messenger, “My vow was a mistake.” Why should God be angry at what you say and destroy the work of your hands? Much dreaming and many words are meaningless. Therefore fear God.(R)

Riches Are Meaningless

If you see the poor oppressed(S) in a district, and justice and rights denied, do not be surprised at such things; for one official is eyed by a higher one, and over them both are others higher still. The increase from the land is taken by all; the king himself profits from the fields.

10 Whoever loves money never has enough;
whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with their income.
This too is meaningless.

11 As goods increase,
so do those who consume them.
And what benefit are they to the owners
except to feast their eyes on them?

12 The sleep of a laborer is sweet,
whether they eat little or much,
but as for the rich, their abundance
permits them no sleep.(T)

13 I have seen a grievous evil under the sun:(U)

wealth hoarded to the harm of its owners,
14 or wealth lost through some misfortune,
so that when they have children
there is nothing left for them to inherit.
15 Everyone comes naked from their mother’s womb,
and as everyone comes, so they depart.(V)
They take nothing from their toil(W)
that they can carry in their hands.(X)

16 This too is a grievous evil:

As everyone comes, so they depart,
and what do they gain,
since they toil for the wind?(Y)
17 All their days they eat in darkness,
with great frustration, affliction and anger.

18 This is what I have observed to be good: that it is appropriate for a person to eat, to drink(Z) and to find satisfaction in their toilsome labor(AA) under the sun during the few days of life God has given them—for this is their lot. 19 Moreover, when God gives someone wealth and possessions,(AB) and the ability to enjoy them,(AC) to accept their lot(AD) and be happy in their toil—this is a gift of God.(AE) 20 They seldom reflect on the days of their life, because God keeps them occupied with gladness of heart.(AF)

I have seen another evil under the sun, and it weighs heavily on mankind: God gives some people wealth, possessions and honor, so that they lack nothing their hearts desire, but God does not grant them the ability to enjoy them,(AG) and strangers enjoy them instead. This is meaningless, a grievous evil.(AH)

A man may have a hundred children and live many years; yet no matter how long he lives, if he cannot enjoy his prosperity and does not receive proper burial, I say that a stillborn(AI) child is better off than he.(AJ) It comes without meaning, it departs in darkness, and in darkness its name is shrouded. Though it never saw the sun or knew anything, it has more rest than does that man— even if he lives a thousand years twice over but fails to enjoy his prosperity. Do not all go to the same place?(AK)

Everyone’s toil is for their mouth,
yet their appetite is never satisfied.(AL)
What advantage have the wise over fools?(AM)
What do the poor gain
by knowing how to conduct themselves before others?
Better what the eye sees
than the roving of the appetite.
This too is meaningless,
a chasing after the wind.(AN)

10 Whatever exists has already been named,(AO)
and what humanity is has been known;
no one can contend
with someone who is stronger.
11 The more the words,
the less the meaning,
and how does that profit anyone?

12 For who knows what is good for a person in life, during the few and meaningless days(AP) they pass through like a shadow?(AQ) Who can tell them what will happen under the sun after they are gone?

2 Corinthians 6:14-7:7

Warning Against Idolatry

14 Do not be yoked together(A) with unbelievers.(B) For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness?(C) 15 What harmony is there between Christ and Belial[a]?(D) Or what does a believer(E) have in common with an unbeliever?(F) 16 What agreement is there between the temple of God and idols?(G) For we are the temple(H) of the living God.(I) As God has said:

“I will live with them
and walk among them,
and I will be their God,
and they will be my people.”[b](J)

17 Therefore,

“Come out from them(K)
and be separate,
says the Lord.
Touch no unclean thing,
and I will receive you.”[c](L)

18 And,

“I will be a Father to you,
and you will be my sons and daughters,(M)
says the Lord Almighty.”[d](N)

Therefore, since we have these promises,(O) dear friends,(P) let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness(Q) out of reverence for God.

Paul’s Joy Over the Church’s Repentance

Make room for us in your hearts.(R) We have wronged no one, we have corrupted no one, we have exploited no one. I do not say this to condemn you; I have said before that you have such a place in our hearts(S) that we would live or die with you. I have spoken to you with great frankness; I take great pride in you.(T) I am greatly encouraged;(U) in all our troubles my joy knows no bounds.(V)

For when we came into Macedonia,(W) we had no rest, but we were harassed at every turn(X)—conflicts on the outside, fears within.(Y) But God, who comforts the downcast,(Z) comforted us by the coming of Titus,(AA) and not only by his coming but also by the comfort you had given him. He told us about your longing for me, your deep sorrow, your ardent concern for me, so that my joy was greater than ever.

Ecclesiastes 1:1-3:22, 2 Corinthians 6:1-13, Psalms 46:1-11, Proverbs 22:15

Today is the 2nd day of September…I was gonna say July and I have no idea why because that was a while back. It’s the 2nd day of September, and here we are in a brand-new month and we’re obvious…I’m obviously trying to move into this new month, but we’re moving into some new territory along with moving into this new month. We finished the book of Job yesterday, which brings us to the book of Ecclesiastes today.

Introduction to the book of Ecclesiastes:

Ecclesiastes is one of the more interesting books in the Bible, at least for me. Like there was a time it was my least favorite thing to read in the Scriptures because it kinda comes up across the depressing and a little hopeless and pointless and I used to not like…just…didn’t reconcile well with what I had assumed life was supposed to look like. And but now it’s one my favorite…one my favorite books because its brutally honest and we face some hard stuff. And Job does the same kind of thing, it just does it from a different perspective. So, to…to kinda get ourselves in the right frame of mind to enter into Ecclesiastes, the best thing that we can do is think about what would happen if you got everything you ever wanted? And you can think, “that sounds heavenly.” Like, “that sounds like what I’m after.” But imagine it. Imagine that all of the challenges of your life essentially, they kind of evaporate. So, money is no longer a problem. You checked the bank this morning and there was $100 million in your bank account, like more than you can spend and your house is paid for, your vehicles are new you, got money in the bank, your kids are doing great, they’re obeying, they’re not rebellious, you can care for them, you can care for their children, you can care for their grandchildren into the future, whatever you’d like to pursue you can pursue it and when you’re done with it you can be done with it and just everything, the resources for everything, the power for everything is at your disposal. So very, very few people in the world ever experience anything like that. We’re always just striving forward to…to get through or to make ends meet, or just to get a little ahead or have a little nest egg or to pursue a dream but not a lot of people can do whatever they want whenever they want with whoever they want, but the writer of Ecclesiastes who is known to be Solomon who collected and penned many of the Proverbs, he did have that ability. That was his life. So, his father, King David had gone through the establishment of the city of David, right, and making Jerusalem the capital city of Israel, and he fought many battles and he collected many treasures, but it was left to his son to build the temple of God. And we remember the story of Solomon praying to the Lord for wisdom and God saying that He would grant him wisdom and grant him long life and grant him riches and honor, and everything else. And, so, Solomon did have this. Solomon took ancient Israel to the apex of their civilization. The brief period where the wind was at their back and everything was in their favor happened under Solomon’s reign and rule. And he was so wise people traveled from all over the world to hear him and to speak to him and to consult with him. He was the king. And, so, he was the supreme ruler of the land with the power of life and death. He was enormously wealthy and brought Israel into a time of immense prosperity. So, he could dream in any direction and he did. We’ll find this from the book of Ecclesiastes, but we also found this when we were reading of the story of Solomon, of his development, of the things that he built, of the things that he dreamed, of the people who came to hear him, of the alliances that he formed. So, he’s a very powerful…maybe the most powerful man in the world at this time. He also had 700 wives and 300 concubines, so 1,000 of the most beautiful women in all of the world available to him all wishing to bear a prince or a princess. And I know all of our children are princes and princesses but like for real, like to bear a royal child. So, this is a very powerful person who has been given the wisdom of God. So, you’d expect like if he gets later in life and he wants to write down the story, you’d think it would be this unbelievable adventure story, a memoir of unspeakable experiences and instead what he writes is that it’s all meaningless, which just seems like such a weird conclusion to come to, but that’s what he concludes, it’s chasing the wind, it’s all meaningless. It’s almost hard to comprehend because we’re always chasing that next…that next thing. Like, if I could just achieve this then my life would be better. If I could just get or attain that then my life would be better. And, so, we…we chase these things, but we can never get to the end that, we’ll always be chasing something. So, if that’s really what’s going to make life better, we’ll never get there because we’ll only be chasing the next thing. Solomon gives us the perspective of somebody who got all the things, everything you could ever want he experienced. And, so, we get a look at his perspective on what it looks like to get off the wheel, basically to stop chasing and pursuing other things because they don’t lead anywhere, they’re meaningless. And, so, Ecclesiastes comes to similar conclusions that Job comes to. Now Job dealt with suffering and in that context, we explored it. Solomon wasn’t exploring suffering he was exploring whatever he wanted to explore. But it gives us the perspective of…man…if you do achieve it all, if you do, then you find out that it still did not fulfill you. And he concludes that only God can do that. There is no other way to fulfillment and what you have is something that you should appreciate and enjoy and see it as a gift from God and be looking at what everybody else has or whatever else you are trying to achieve because if you achieve it all you’re still not gonna be fulfilled. So, it gives us a prime opportunity to explore those pursuits and to consider what we’re trading our life for. What is promising us more that we would actually trade the days of our lives that we cannot get back that are precious? What we trading our lives for? Is it really gonna be worth it? So, Ecclesiastes is part of the wisdom literature of the Bible, which also included Job, which includes Proverbs, which includes part of the Psalms, which includes apocryphal texts, like Sirach. So, that’s kinda the genre that we’re reading and some of the territory that we’re heading into. And may we allow the Holy Spirit to come and teach us. We have Proverbs and we see all of these wise sayings, but this is deeper than that. This is an older man nearing the end of his life reflecting back on all that he’s experienced and coming to certain conclusions about the way that he’s spent his own life. And may we find that there is a time for every purpose under heaven. And maybe we’ve been trading our lives chasing the wind. And, so, we begin. We’re reading from the New International Version this week. Ecclesiastes 1, 2, and 3 today.

Commentary:

Okay. So, you can kinda see what we’re talking about the book of Ecclesiastes, everything is meaningless, it’s chasing the wind. And, so, let’s just…for a quick second since we’ve already talked about Ecclesiastes…just…let’s look at what we read today. Solomon basically said, “look, I have done it all. I have gone as far as you can go in any number of directions and it’s meaningless, it’s chasing the wind because no matter what we achieve, no matter what gets accomplished, it’s gonna be forgotten here upon the earth. No matter what we achieve, no matter how we accomplish, we’re no different than the animals because we all end up in the same place, which is we all experience death. And then Solomon is basically using all of the knowledge that he has upon the earth, the earth’s knowledge, to say nobody knows what happens after that. Nobody can prove anything. So, it's…it’s all meaningless. And, so, what’s missing from the equation? What is it that makes it all meaningless? The lack of faith. Faith isn’t a part of the equation of what we were talking about today. It’s only faith that makes anything have meaning. And Solomon at this point in his life seems to be doing what…what you do as you kind of continue to grow and age ask the big, big questions. You kind of come to the end of what you can know and then realize it is meaningless. Without a view of eternity, without a faith view, without faith in God then really, we all do end up in the same place and everything that we’ve worked so hard to achieve fades away or is given to who knows. And, so, in so many ways we are, in the book of Ecclesiastes, looking at life apophatically. That’s a process of subtraction to arrive at the truth instead of a process of addition. So, if you’re looking cataphatically, like essentially a process of addition, you’re saying, “this is like that. This is like.” Whereas if you are looking apathetically, you’ll be like, “that is not like that. This is not like that.” In so many ways what Solomon is talking about is what Jesus said, “what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses his soul?”

Prayer:

Father, we thank you for your word and it’s disruptive on..on…in many places at many times. It’s disruptive it shakes us. It…it shakes us out of our comfort zones and forces us to look at what we’re doing and why we’re doing it. And right at the outset we can see there is no purpose or meaning without a bigger view. The same kinds of things Paul is writing about in his letters, “look higher. This is a bigger story.” But it if we don’t see that bigger story than all we see is the toil of our lives trying to scrape forward and achieve some sort of security and some sort of happiness that all fades away in time. There is no hope but you. And, so, we are acknowledging that and we invite your Holy Spirit as we continue into this month and into this territory that the Bible is leading us into, that you take us deep, deep to the level of our motivations, deep to what it is we’re trying to do here. Are we trying to be our own God? Be our own sovereign? Carve of our own niche? Even if we could do that we end up in the same place as everything else on this earth, which is the grave. If we have no hope beyond that it is meaningless. And, so, you are our meaning. You are our purpose, not what we can do for you. You are our hope, not what you can help us do to make life better. You are our only hope and we put our hope in you. And we ask, Holy Spirit, sweet comforter, that you come into the disruptive places and that you comfort us and that you reprioritize and reorient our posture and what we’re aiming toward in this life. Come Holy Spirit we pray. In the name of Jesus we ask. Amen.

Song:

Turn Turn Turn - Anthem Lights

[Spencer Kane]

To everything - turn, turn, turn
There is a season - turn, turn, turn
And a time to every purpose under heaven

[Joey Stamper]
To everything - turn, turn, turn
There is a season - turn, turn, turn
And a time to every purpose under heaven

[Caleb Grimm]
A time to be born, a time to die
A time to plant, a time to reap
A time to kill, a time to heal
A time to laugh, a time to weep

[Chad Graham]
To everything - turn, turn, turn
There is a season - turn, turn, turn
And a time to every purpose under heaven

[Spencer Kane]
A time of love, a time of hate
A time of war, a time of peace
A time you may embrace
A time to refrain from embracing

[Joey Stamper]
To everything - turn, turn, turn
There is a season - turn, turn, turn
And a time to every purpose under heaven

[Caleb Grimm, Spencer Kane, Joey Stamper]
A time to gain, a time to lose
A time to rend, a time to sow
A time for love, a time for hate
A time for peace, I swear it’s not too late

[Chad Graham]

To everything - turn, turn, turn
There is a season - turn, turn, turn

Ecclesiastes 1-3

Everything Is Meaningless

The words of the Teacher,[a](A) son of David, king in Jerusalem:(B)

“Meaningless! Meaningless!”
says the Teacher.
“Utterly meaningless!
Everything is meaningless.”(C)

What do people gain from all their labors
at which they toil under the sun?(D)
Generations come and generations go,
but the earth remains forever.(E)
The sun rises and the sun sets,
and hurries back to where it rises.(F)
The wind blows to the south
and turns to the north;
round and round it goes,
ever returning on its course.
All streams flow into the sea,
yet the sea is never full.
To the place the streams come from,
there they return again.(G)
All things are wearisome,
more than one can say.
The eye never has enough of seeing,(H)
nor the ear its fill of hearing.
What has been will be again,
what has been done will be done again;(I)
there is nothing new under the sun.
10 Is there anything of which one can say,
“Look! This is something new”?
It was here already, long ago;
it was here before our time.
11 No one remembers the former generations,(J)
and even those yet to come
will not be remembered
by those who follow them.(K)

Wisdom Is Meaningless

12 I, the Teacher,(L) was king over Israel in Jerusalem.(M) 13 I applied my mind to study and to explore by wisdom all that is done under the heavens.(N) What a heavy burden God has laid on mankind!(O) 14 I have seen all the things that are done under the sun; all of them are meaningless, a chasing after the wind.(P)

15 What is crooked cannot be straightened;(Q)
what is lacking cannot be counted.

16 I said to myself, “Look, I have increased in wisdom more than anyone who has ruled over Jerusalem before me;(R) I have experienced much of wisdom and knowledge.” 17 Then I applied myself to the understanding of wisdom,(S) and also of madness and folly,(T) but I learned that this, too, is a chasing after the wind.

18 For with much wisdom comes much sorrow;(U)
the more knowledge, the more grief.(V)

Pleasures Are Meaningless

I said to myself, “Come now, I will test you with pleasure(W) to find out what is good.” But that also proved to be meaningless. “Laughter,”(X) I said, “is madness. And what does pleasure accomplish?” I tried cheering myself with wine,(Y) and embracing folly(Z)—my mind still guiding me with wisdom. I wanted to see what was good for people to do under the heavens during the few days of their lives.

I undertook great projects: I built houses for myself(AA) and planted vineyards.(AB) I made gardens and parks and planted all kinds of fruit trees in them. I made reservoirs to water groves of flourishing trees. I bought male and female slaves and had other slaves(AC) who were born in my house. I also owned more herds and flocks than anyone in Jerusalem before me. I amassed silver and gold(AD) for myself, and the treasure of kings and provinces.(AE) I acquired male and female singers,(AF) and a harem[b] as well—the delights of a man’s heart. I became greater by far than anyone in Jerusalem(AG) before me.(AH) In all this my wisdom stayed with me.

10 I denied myself nothing my eyes desired;
I refused my heart no pleasure.
My heart took delight in all my labor,
and this was the reward for all my toil.
11 Yet when I surveyed all that my hands had done
and what I had toiled to achieve,
everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind;(AI)
nothing was gained under the sun.(AJ)

Wisdom and Folly Are Meaningless

12 Then I turned my thoughts to consider wisdom,
and also madness and folly.(AK)
What more can the king’s successor do
than what has already been done?(AL)
13 I saw that wisdom(AM) is better than folly,(AN)
just as light is better than darkness.
14 The wise have eyes in their heads,
while the fool walks in the darkness;
but I came to realize
that the same fate overtakes them both.(AO)

15 Then I said to myself,

“The fate of the fool will overtake me also.
What then do I gain by being wise?”(AP)
I said to myself,
“This too is meaningless.”
16 For the wise, like the fool, will not be long remembered;(AQ)
the days have already come when both have been forgotten.(AR)
Like the fool, the wise too must die!(AS)

Toil Is Meaningless

17 So I hated life, because the work that is done under the sun was grievous to me. All of it is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.(AT) 18 I hated all the things I had toiled for under the sun, because I must leave them to the one who comes after me.(AU) 19 And who knows whether that person will be wise or foolish?(AV) Yet they will have control over all the fruit of my toil into which I have poured my effort and skill under the sun. This too is meaningless. 20 So my heart began to despair over all my toilsome labor under the sun. 21 For a person may labor with wisdom, knowledge and skill, and then they must leave all they own to another who has not toiled for it. This too is meaningless and a great misfortune. 22 What do people get for all the toil and anxious striving with which they labor under the sun?(AW) 23 All their days their work is grief and pain;(AX) even at night their minds do not rest.(AY) This too is meaningless.

24 A person can do nothing better than to eat and drink(AZ) and find satisfaction in their own toil.(BA) This too, I see, is from the hand of God,(BB) 25 for without him, who can eat or find enjoyment?(BC) 26 To the person who pleases him, God gives wisdom,(BD) knowledge and happiness, but to the sinner he gives the task of gathering and storing up wealth(BE) to hand it over to the one who pleases God.(BF) This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.

A Time for Everything

There is a time(BG) for everything,
and a season for every activity under the heavens:

a time to be born and a time to die,
a time to plant and a time to uproot,(BH)
a time to kill(BI) and a time to heal,
a time to tear down and a time to build,
a time to weep and a time to laugh,
a time to mourn and a time to dance,
a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them,
a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing,
a time to search and a time to give up,
a time to keep and a time to throw away,
a time to tear and a time to mend,
a time to be silent(BJ) and a time to speak,
a time to love and a time to hate,
a time for war and a time for peace.

What do workers gain from their toil?(BK) 10 I have seen the burden God has laid on the human race.(BL) 11 He has made everything beautiful in its time.(BM) He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet[c] no one can fathom(BN) what God has done from beginning to end.(BO) 12 I know that there is nothing better for people than to be happy and to do good while they live. 13 That each of them may eat and drink,(BP) and find satisfaction(BQ) in all their toil—this is the gift of God.(BR) 14 I know that everything God does will endure forever; nothing can be added to it and nothing taken from it. God does it so that people will fear him.(BS)

15 Whatever is has already been,(BT)
and what will be has been before;(BU)
and God will call the past to account.[d]

16 And I saw something else under the sun:

In the place of judgment—wickedness was there,
in the place of justice—wickedness was there.

17 I said to myself,

“God will bring into judgment(BV)
both the righteous and the wicked,
for there will be a time for every activity,
a time to judge every deed.”(BW)

18 I also said to myself, “As for humans, God tests them so that they may see that they are like the animals.(BX) 19 Surely the fate of human beings(BY) is like that of the animals; the same fate awaits them both: As one dies, so dies the other. All have the same breath[e]; humans have no advantage over animals. Everything is meaningless. 20 All go to the same place; all come from dust, and to dust all return.(BZ) 21 Who knows if the human spirit rises upward(CA) and if the spirit of the animal goes down into the earth?”

22 So I saw that there is nothing better for a person than to enjoy their work,(CB) because that is their lot.(CC) For who can bring them to see what will happen after them?

As God’s co-workers(A) we urge you not to receive God’s grace in vain.(B) For he says,

“In the time of my favor I heard you,
and in the day of salvation I helped you.”[a](C)

I tell you, now is the time of God’s favor, now is the day of salvation.

Paul’s Hardships

We put no stumbling block in anyone’s path,(D) so that our ministry will not be discredited. Rather, as servants of God we commend ourselves in every way: in great endurance; in troubles, hardships and distresses; in beatings, imprisonments(E) and riots; in hard work, sleepless nights and hunger;(F) in purity, understanding, patience and kindness; in the Holy Spirit(G) and in sincere love;(H) in truthful speech(I) and in the power of God;(J) with weapons of righteousness(K) in the right hand and in the left; through glory and dishonor,(L) bad report(M) and good report; genuine, yet regarded as impostors;(N) known, yet regarded as unknown; dying,(O) and yet we live on;(P) beaten, and yet not killed; 10 sorrowful, yet always rejoicing;(Q) poor, yet making many rich;(R) having nothing,(S) and yet possessing everything.(T)

11 We have spoken freely to you, Corinthians, and opened wide our hearts to you.(U) 12 We are not withholding our affection from you, but you are withholding yours from us. 13 As a fair exchange—I speak as to my children(V)—open wide your hearts(W) also.
