Ezekiel 31:1-32:32, Hebrews 12:14-29, Psalms 113:1-114:8, Proverbs 27:18-20

Today is the 15th day of November. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian. It’s great to be here with you…I guess the dead center of this 11th month of the year. And I suppose we should be taking some deep breaths here because it's…it’s about to get to the busy season of the year, isn’t it? But we’re out in front of that as we come to the conclusion of another one of our weeks together and we’ll finish strong like we always do. We’ve been reading from the Christian Standard Bible this week and the next step forward is back into the book of Ezekiel. Today we’ll read chapters 31 and 32.

Commentary:

Okay. So, we have a pretty good view of our faith and what happens in our faith as we follow the path, the narrow path that leads to life, as we follow the way of Jesus found in the book of Hebrews today. So, the author of Hebrews is saying, “look, everybody pursue peace with each other. This is what you’re supposed to do. You’re supposed to pursue holiness. If you don’t have that you’re not gonna see God. So, make sure you’re pursuing these things. Make sure nobody falls short of the grace of God and that the root of bitterness doesn’t spring up and defile the community”, right? “Make sure you are in this. Make sure there isn’t any immoral or irreverent person like Esau who sold his birthright in exchange for a single meal”, right? So, putting that in terms of the gospel, it’s like you can’t carry your faith around as if it’s disposable as if you could sell it all for something that you think is better. Like that’s not how this works. So, that’s the context, that’s what’s being said here. And he’s saying, “do all these things for a reason,” And this is where we have to again remind ourselves that Hebrews was written to Hebrews, right? So, the entire context and all of the imagery is a part of the Hebrew worldview. So, the author then takes us back to the mountain, in this case Mount Sinai where Moses met with God but God’s intention was to meet with his people but when he descended upon the mountain the people were afraid to hear directly from God so they sent Moses up on the mountain. And even Moses was trembling with fear. So, the writer of Hebrews is giving that imagery and saying that, “this is how we’ve looked at God, ever since, but we…that’s not how it is and that is most certainly not how it is anymore since God in the flesh in the person of Jesus, since God himself came to rescue us and institute a new covenant, that’s not how it is anymore. Instead…” and I’m quoting Hebrews here…“Instead, you have come to Mount Zion to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, to the myriads of angels, a festive gathering, to the assembly of the firstborn whose names have been written in heaven, to a judge who is God of all, to the spirits of righteous people made perfect and to Jesus the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood which says better things than the blood of Abel.” Alright, so let’s just recount where we’re going here because it can…it can be complicated. The writer of Hebrews is saying, “live upright, live holy, be at peace with everyone. Don’t let immorality, don’t let irreverence, don’t let bitterness grow among you because you’re not living in fear of God like they did at Sinai. Now you can come right in, you belong”. And then he goes on, “see to it that you don’t reject the one who speaks for if those people back then in Zion didn’t escape when they rejected him and warned him on earth then nobody’s gonna get away when they’ve been warned from heaven. “His voice shook”…we’re quoting again…“His voice shook the earth at that time but now He has promised, yet once more I will shake not only the earth but also the heavens. This expression “yet once more” indicates the removal of what can be shaken, that is, created things, so that what is not shaken might remain. Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful.” So, let’s sum this up. There are postures that we’re supposed to live into that lead us to holiness because without it we won’t see God. In the past Moses went on Mount Sinai and everybody was terrified when they heard from God but now things have changed, and we can go boldly into the presence of God. However, God is about the business of revealing and installing His kingdom forever and ever and that will require that everything that can shake will be shaken so that only what is unshakable will remain. There is the context for life friends. All that can be shaken will be shaken so that all that remains is unshakable because we are inheriting an unshakable kingdom. So, I don’t know about you but there’s been some shaking going on in my world and in my life this year and I’ve…usually a few times now…usually have the where with all to embrace and invite God in to the shaking and saying, “I believe you are in this as uncomfortable as this might be.” And I’ve been shaken plenty of times in my life and I know that when all that can shake has been shaken off then all that’s left is what is true. So, maybe rather than the anger and the frustration and all of the associated emotions that go with that, that eventually get us shaking our fist at the heavens and being angry with God. Like maybe we need to reframe what’s happening here. We are being made unshakable and the only way that happens is that all that can shake has been shaken off.

Prayer:

Father we embrace what You are doing in our lives and we invite Your Holy Spirit to give us eyes to see and ears to hear, because so often when we face challenge, when things start shaking it’s uncomfortable and so we immediately label it bad or evil because it’s making us uncomfortable. We don’t take that beat and invite You to help us interpret the path we’re walking and what’s happening in our lives. So, we’re taking that moment now. Come, Holy Spirit. Help us to reinterpret the circumstances that are swirling around us. Certainly, we face obstacles because we create them because of the decisions that we make. But sometimes we face seasons where it feels like everything is shaking and we’re not really sure why and the longer that it lasts the more that we cling to things that You may be trying to shake loose. And, so, we’re working against You and getting frustrated and exhausted in the process. So, You have given us some eyes to see today, that this is what is going to happen. Until Your kingdom is fully established, all that can shake will be shaken. And, so, it’s hard to invite the shaking into our own lives because it’s inviting disruption and yet we are told by the author of Hebrews today that what we’re aiming for here is holiness, what we’re aiming for here is to live at peace. And, so, we invite You. Come Holy Spirit and lead us into all truth as You’ve promised and as we believe. We pray this in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hey Daily Audio Bible family this is Lola coming to you from East Asia. I don’t really call in very often but there’s a huge need in my community here right now. There’s another teacher, I’ve never actually met her, she doesn’t even teach at this place where I am, but she is dying of cancer. She…at this point she wouldn’t even make it to the airport to fly back to the US. She does not know the Lord and she is terrified. She’s dying in a place that’s not her home. Her family isn’t here, and she doesn’t know God. There…the women here at my community have been pitching in. Most of us have never met her before but we are going to the hospital so that we shall have people who speak English with her as she’s dying. But what we really need is…she needs to be lifted up so that she’ll know the Lord before she passes away. And I also…we also…I haven’t been helping much…but we need prayer for the women here in my community who are volunteering to just go and be with her. They are exhausted. So, if you could pray for that that would be wonderful.

Good morning this is Valerie from South of at Atlanta. I just wanted to call and share my heart a little bit. I find that I’m growing cynical. It’s like I just feel myself getting cold and a little bit cynical with the Lord and I don’t want to be that way and I don’t quite know what…where it’s coming from, but I do know that I need a new church home. I know that I need to surround myself with other Christians, especially Christian women that are entering into the older phase of their life. So, I ask for prayer that God will direct me and the path that I need to go. But in order for me to combat the cynicism I think that I really need to just start praying more. So, it’s going to be my goal to start calling in much more frequently and praying for the DABbers and lifting others up to God in the hope that my heart will become tender and more compassionate. So, I want to pray for Abigail right now who had found that she has cancer spots on her lungs, and she’s gone through so much already. And then to have this diagnosis, I can’t I just can’t imagine the feeling of defeat. So, I want to pray for her, and I want to pray for Janet who had her bad test results. And Janet please know that I’m praying for you. I’m praying that God will work in that situation. And I also want to pray for Sandy who had the stroke. And I’m running out of time, so I want to mention Mark who has COPD. So, I’m praying for the four of you today. You will be on my heart constantly. God bless everybody. Have a blessed day.

Good morning Daily Audio Bible readers, family, I’m calling to lift up a few of the dampers from listening to the November 11th podcast. This is Brave from New Jersey. I’m calling for Janice from the UK concerning your friend who is currently in very…a lot of difficulties, about to lose his house or apartment and he has lung cancer, he has to find out if you can go back to work after reassessment. We want to lift up your friend Janice from the UK that the Lord will visit him and as everything rushing into him as water the Lord says that although the flood brushes over us of water it will not overtake us. So, I trust God that he will not be overtaken, and our Lord will give him a reason to celebrate and know him. And as you’re lifting him up over the podcast here, you’re lifting up will not be in vain and it will receive a visitation of the Lord even where he is, and the Lord will visit Him in show him kindness. I also want to pray concerning Betsy from Michigan and her friend the teenager who is driven to the dark side that the Lord will visit her too, that the Lord will show his face to her and that also even in these dark days there will be a reason to celebrate and the Lord will be glorified. And finally, I want to pray for Dana in Arkansas and her three daughters recovering from PTSD from sexual assault. Lord, this prayer point hit hard to my heart because I have been a victim too and I pray that the Lord will truly restore their youth, restore everything concerning them.

Hi everybody it’s Margo in Liberia. I have a bit of a cold, so my voice is a bit different. I’m calling the old way. I phoned in a few times using the Hotline button but I’m not sure if mine is working so I’m trying my old way because I’d really like to connect with you guys. Just touching base letting you know I’m still here, I’m still listening, and I’m still praying for you all every day. And could you please keep me in your prayers. Don’t forget me over here in Liberia. We’re coming up to…well it’s been about six months that we’ve actually been in Liberia now and some things are getting easier. We are starting to adjust. It’s not an easy place to live. I’ve done lots and lots of volunteer work at the mission hospital which has been really fulfilling. However, it’s…it’s a big change for me and it’s…it’s very confronting and very challenging and just I need your prayers. I had my son come and visit which was amazing. He was here for a few weeks and he’s just left and him going seems to have just triggered in me the most piercing grief. It’s just not an easy life and sometimes the suffering is great. But at the same time, I love Jesus so much and it’s such a privilege and an honor to be doing what he’s called me to be…called me to do and called me to be. Anyway, time’s running out. I love you guys. Don’t forget me. I’ll talk again soon. Bye.

Ezekiel 31-32

Downfall of Egypt and Assyria

31 In the eleventh year,(A) in the third month, on the first day of the month, the word of the Lord came to me: “Son of man, say to Pharaoh king of Egypt and to his hordes,

‘Who are you like in your greatness?
Think of Assyria, a cedar in Lebanon,(B)
with beautiful branches and shady foliage
and of lofty height.
Its top was among the clouds.[a]
The waters caused it to grow;
the underground springs made it tall,
directing their rivers all around
the place where the tree was planted
and sending their channels
to all the trees of the field.
Therefore the cedar became greater in height
than all the trees of the field.(C)
Its branches multiplied,
and its boughs grew long
as it spread them out
because of the abundant water.(D)
All the birds of the sky
nested in its branches,(E)
and all the animals of the field
gave birth beneath its boughs;
all the great nations lived in its shade.
It was beautiful in its size,
in the length of its limbs,
for its roots extended to abundant water.
The cedars in God’s garden could not eclipse it;(F)
the pine trees couldn’t compare with its branches,
nor could the plane trees match its boughs.
No tree in the garden of God
could compare with it in beauty.

I made it beautiful with its many limbs,
and all the trees of Eden,
which were in God’s garden, envied it.

10 “‘Therefore, this is what the Lord God says: Since it[b] towered high in stature and set its top among the clouds, and it[c] grew proud(G) on account of its height, 11 I determined to hand it over to a ruler of nations;(H) he would surely deal with it. I banished it because of its wickedness. 12 Foreigners, ruthless men from the nations,(I) cut it down and left it lying. Its limbs fell on the mountains and in every valley; its boughs lay broken in all the earth’s ravines. All the peoples of the earth left its shade and abandoned it. 13 All the birds of the sky nested on its fallen trunk, and all the animals of the field were among its boughs. 14 This happened so that no trees planted beside water would become great in height and set their tops among the clouds, and so that no other well-watered trees would reach them in height. For they have all been consigned to death, to the underworld, among the people[d] who descend to the Pit.(J)

15 “‘This is what the Lord God says: I caused grieving on the day the cedar went down to Sheol.(K) I closed off the underground deep because of it:[e] I held back the rivers of the deep, and its abundant water was restrained. I made Lebanon mourn on account of it, and all the trees of the field fainted because of it. 16 I made the nations quake at the sound of its downfall, when I threw it down to Sheol to be with those who descend to the Pit. Then all the trees of Eden,(L) the choice and best of Lebanon, all the well-watered trees, were comforted(M) in the underworld. 17 They too descended with it to Sheol, to those slain by the sword. As its allies[f][g] they had lived in its shade among the nations.

18 “‘Who then are you like in glory and greatness among Eden’s trees? You also will be brought down to the underworld to be with the trees of Eden. You will lie among the uncircumcised with those slain by the sword.(N) This is Pharaoh and all his hordes. This is the declaration of the Lord God.’”

A Lament for Pharaoh

32 In the twelfth year, in the twelfth month, on the first day of the month, the word of the Lord came to me: “Son of man, lament(O) for Pharaoh king of Egypt and say to him,

‘You compare yourself to a lion of the nations,
but[h] you are like a monster[i](P) in the seas.
You thrash about in your rivers,
churn up the waters with your feet,
and muddy the[j] rivers.

“‘This is what the Lord God says:

I will spread my net over you(Q)
with an assembly of many peoples,
and they[k] will haul you up in my net.
I will abandon you on the land
and throw you onto the open field.
I will cause all the birds of the sky
to settle on you
and let the wild creatures of the entire earth
eat their fill of you.(R)
I will put your flesh on the mountains(S)
and fill the valleys with your carcass.
I will drench the land
with the flow of your blood,
even to the mountains;
the ravines will be filled with your gore.
“‘When I snuff you out,
I will cover the heavens
and darken their stars.
I will cover the sun with a cloud,(T)
and the moon will not give its light.
I will darken all the shining lights
in the heavens over you,
and will bring darkness on your land.
This is the declaration of the Lord God.
“‘I will trouble the hearts of many peoples,
when I bring about your destruction
among the nations,
in countries you have not known.
10 I will cause many peoples to be appalled at you,
and their kings will shudder with fear because of you(U)
when I brandish my sword in front of them.
On the day of your downfall
each of them will tremble
every moment(V) for his life.

11 “‘For this is what the Lord God says:

The sword of Babylon’s king
will come against you!
12 I will make your hordes fall
by the swords of warriors,
all of them ruthless men from the nations.(W)
They will ravage Egypt’s pride,
and all its hordes will be destroyed.
13 I will slaughter all its cattle
that are beside many waters.
No human foot will churn them again,
and no cattle hooves will disturb them.(X)
14 Then I will let their waters settle
and will make their rivers flow like oil.
This is the declaration of the Lord God.
15 When I make the land of Egypt a desolation,
so that it is emptied of everything in it,
when I strike down all who live there,
then they will know that I am the Lord.(Y)

16 “‘The daughters of the nations will chant that lament.(Z) They will chant it over Egypt and all its hordes. This is the declaration of the Lord God.’”

Egypt in Sheol

17 In the twelfth year,[l] on the fifteenth day of the month, the word of the Lord came to me: 18 “Son of man, wail over the hordes of Egypt and bring Egypt and the daughters of mighty nations down to the underworld,[m] to be with those who descend to the Pit:(AA)

19 Who do you surpass in loveliness?
Go down and be laid to rest with the uncircumcised!
20 They will fall among those slain by the sword.
A sword is appointed!(AB)
They drag her and all her hordes away.
21 Warrior leaders will speak
from the middle of Sheol
about him[n] and his allies:
‘They have come down;
the uncircumcised lie
slain by the sword.’(AC)

22 “Assyria is there with her whole assembly;
her graves are all around her.
All of them are slain, fallen by the sword.
23 Her graves are set in the deepest regions of the Pit,
and her assembly is all around her burial place.
All of them are slain, fallen by the sword—
those who once spread terror
in the land of the living.

24 “Elam(AD) is there
with all her hordes around her grave.
All of them are slain, fallen by the sword—
those who went down to the underworld uncircumcised,
who once spread their terror
in the land of the living.
They bear their disgrace
with those who descend to the Pit.
25 Among the slain
they prepare a bed for Elam
with all her hordes.
Her graves are all around her.
All of them are uncircumcised,
slain by the sword,
although their terror was once spread
in the land of the living.
They bear their disgrace
with those who descend to the Pit.
They are placed among the slain.

26 “Meshech and Tubal[o](AE) are there,
with all their hordes.
Their graves are all around them.
All of them are uncircumcised, slain by the sword,
although their terror was once spread
in the land of the living.
27 They do not lie down
with the fallen warriors of the uncircumcised,[p]
who went down to Sheol
with their weapons of war,
whose swords were placed under their heads[q]
and their shields[r]
rested on their bones,
although the terror of these warriors
was once in the land of the living.
28 But you will be shattered
and will lie down among the uncircumcised,
with those slain by the sword.(AF)

29 “Edom(AG) is there, her kings and all her princes,
who, despite their strength, have been placed
among those slain by the sword.
They lie down with the uncircumcised,
with those who descend to the Pit.
30 All the leaders of the north(AH)
and all the Sidonians(AI) are there.
They went down in shame with the slain,
despite the terror their strength inspired.
They lie down uncircumcised
with those slain by the sword.
They bear their disgrace
with those who descend to the Pit.

31 “Pharaoh will see them
and be comforted(AJ) over all his hordes—
Pharaoh and his whole army,
slain by the sword.”

This is the declaration of the Lord God.

32 “For I will spread my[s] terror
in the land of the living,
so Pharaoh and all his hordes
will be laid to rest among the uncircumcised,
with those slain by the sword.”

This is the declaration of the Lord God.

Warning against Rejecting God’s Grace

14 Pursue peace with everyone, and holiness(A)—without it no one will see the Lord.(B) 15 Make sure that no one falls short of the grace of God and that no root of bitterness springs up, causing trouble and defiling many.(C) 16 And make sure that there isn’t any immoral[a] or irreverent(D) person like Esau, who sold his birthright in exchange for a single meal.(E) 17 For you know that later, when he wanted to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, even though he sought it with tears, because he didn’t find any opportunity for repentance.(F)

18 For you have not come to what could be touched, to a blazing fire, to darkness, gloom, and storm, 19 to the blast of a trumpet, and the sound of words. Those who heard it begged that not another word be spoken to them, 20 for they could not bear what was commanded: If even an animal touches the mountain, it must be stoned.[b](G) 21 The appearance was so terrifying that Moses said, I am trembling with fear.[c](H) 22 Instead, you have come to Mount Zion, to the city of the living God (the heavenly Jerusalem), to myriads of angels, a festive gathering,(I) 23 to the assembly of the firstborn whose names have been written[d] in heaven, to a Judge, who is God of all, to the spirits of righteous people made perfect,(J) 24 and to Jesus, the mediator(K) of a new covenant,(L) and to the sprinkled blood, which says better things than the blood of Abel.(M)

25 See to it that you do not reject the one who speaks. For if they did not escape when they rejected him who warned them on earth, even less will we if we turn away from him who warns us from heaven.(N) 26 His voice shook the earth at that time, but now he has promised, Yet once more I will shake not only the earth but also the heavens.[e](O) 27 This expression, “Yet once more,” indicates the removal of what can be shaken(P)—that is, created things—so that what is not shaken might remain. 28 Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful. By it, we may serve God acceptably, with reverence and awe,(Q) 29 for our God is a consuming fire.(R)

Ezekiel 29:1-30:26, Hebrews 11:32-12:13, Psalms 112:1-10, Proverbs 27:17

Today is the 14th day of November. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian and it’s great to be here with you as we move through the center of another of our weeks together and…well…frankly we’re moving through the center of the 11th month of the year at the same time. So, yeah, we’re well into our journey but we still have so much yet in front of us. So, we will take the next step forward. We’re reading from the Christian Standard Bible this week. Ezekiel chapter 29 and 30 today.

Commentary:

Okay. So, this is our third today walking down what is known as the “hall of faith” in the book of Hebrews and it’s simply called that because it’s example after example after example, starting in the book of Genesis and working its way forward through the Hebrew Scriptures of…of people and stories that we have all encountered as we’ve moved through the Bible this year where faith was the irreplaceable thing. So, we concluded that hall of faith today in an interesting way because we concluded the book with people who had faith but did not see the promise fulfilled in their lifetime. So, we start in the beginning of the Scriptures and we worked our way forward seeing that faith is irreplaceable. Like, without faith it is impossible to please God and we saw God come through in those stories of faith, but they all faced considerable opposition, right? Like, they had to fight for it. And then today we get to people who were faithful and true and fought for it and died, hoping, hoping in faith. And then as the…as the writer of Hebrews concludes this hall the faith, basically what happens is a mic drop, a summary, a mic drop, a walk off the stage, basically, what else is there to say about walking the life of faith. And they say, “therefore, since we also have such a large cloud of witnesses surrounding us.” What he’s referring to when he’s talking about this large cloud of witnesses is all of the examples we just walked through in the hall of faith. Their lives, their faith, their witness, their testimony, their story serves as an example, this is the path. So, the writer of Hebrews says, “so, since…since we have such a large cloud of witnesses surrounding us let us lay aside every hindrance and the sin that so easily ensnares us. Let us run with endurance the race that lies before us keeping our eyes on Jesus, the source and perfecter of our faith.” And he’s using Jesus as this final example in the hall of faith. “For the joy that lay before him, He endured the cross, despising the shame, and sat down at the right end of the throne of God.” That…that’s a pretty big mic drop moment as we’ve walked down the hall of faith and seen all these examples and realized really, it is impossible to please God without faith and really, it’s pretty much impossible to get anywhere without faith. So, since we have all of these examples, since we have this great cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let’s walk the path. So, my brothers and sisters, listen, I mean, we’re well into our year and it’s been a heck of a year, at least it’s been a heck of a year for me. I’ve faced challenges I did not know were coming my way. And, yeah, I mean all kinds of things happen in a life in a year. So, we all have these stories and it’s so easy to come to get punched and knocked down and then think, “okay, well where is God” and just be discouraged. But since we have such a large cloud of witnesses surrounding us, brothers and sisters let us lay aside every hindrance, all of them, let us lay aside every hindrance and the sin that keeps trapping us, that keeps tripping us, that keeps ensnaring us. Let’s stop those things. Let us run with endurance the race that lies before us. In other words, we’re walking down this path of life. This is the road were on. Let’s run with endurance the race that we’re running, keeping our eyes on Jesus and not on anything else because all of the times that we turn our head to the right or the left and get distracted we end up in the ditch. Let’s keep our eyes on Jesus, the source and perfecter of our faith. And, as we’ve been told it’s impossible to please God without faith. And Jesus is the source and perfecter of our faith. So, let’s run this race and endure what comes, keeping our eyes on Jesus, knowing that our faith is being perfected and we are becoming pleasing to God. We know it’s impossible without faith to please God, but that means it’s possible to please God by faith and Jesus is the source and perfecter of our faith. So, let’s get up off of our buts. It’s time to stop sitting around in our own self-absorbed misery. Let’s get up since we have such a large cloud of witnesses surrounding us. Let’s go.

Prayer:

Father we invite You into that because if we look at our lives, we can see when we’re faithless, we can see what happens when that tank is empty. We cannot please You. We cannot please anyone. And we have been given example after example after example in the Scriptures telling us flatly and frankly, faith is the activator, faith is the fuel of this story we are living. And, so, we keep our eyes on You Jesus. Running this race with endurance come what may our eyes are on You. You are perfecting our faith. And as the author of Hebrews goes on to tell us that You discipline those that You love, we submit to You. We believe that You want good for us. We believe that You want to reveal the narrow path that leads to life that very few find, and we will certainly not find it without faith. So, come Holy Spirit and lead us into all truth. We surrender to You and we pray these things in the mighty name of Jesus. Amen.

Ezekiel 29-30

A Prophecy of Egypt’s Ruin

29 In the tenth year, in the tenth month on the twelfth day of the month, the word of the Lord came to me: “Son of man, face Pharaoh king of Egypt and prophesy against him and against all of Egypt.(A) Speak to him and say, ‘This is what the Lord God says:

Look, I am against you, Pharaoh king of Egypt,
the great monster[a](B) lying in the middle of his Nile,
who says, “My Nile is my own;
I made it for myself.”
I will put hooks in your jaws(C)
and make the fish of your streams
cling to your scales.
I will haul you up
from the middle of your Nile,
and all the fish of your streams
will cling to your scales.
I will leave you in the desert,(D)
you and all the fish of your streams.
You will fall on the open ground
and will not be taken away
or gathered for burial.(E)
I have given you
to the wild creatures of the earth
and the birds of the sky as food.(F)

“‘Then all the inhabitants of Egypt
will know that I am the Lord,
for they[b] have been a staff made of reed
to the house of Israel.

When Israel grasped you by the hand,
you splintered,(G) tearing all their shoulders;
when they leaned on you,
you shattered and made all their hips unsteady.[c]

“‘Therefore, this is what the Lord God says: I am going to bring a sword(H) against you and cut off both man and animal from you. The land of Egypt will be a desolate ruin.(I) Then they will know that I am the Lord. Because you[d] said, “The Nile is my own; I made it,” 10 therefore, I am against you and your Nile. I will turn the land of Egypt into ruins, a desolate waste from Migdol to Syene, as far as the border of Cush. 11 No human foot will pass through it, and no animal foot will pass through it.(J) It will be uninhabited for forty years. 12 I will make the land of Egypt a desolation among[e] desolate lands, and its cities will be a desolation among[f] ruined cities(K) for forty years. I will disperse the Egyptians among the nations and scatter them throughout the lands.(L)

13 “‘For this is what the Lord God says: At the end of forty years I will gather the Egyptians from the peoples where they were dispersed.(M) 14 I will restore the fortunes of Egypt and bring them back to the land of Pathros, the land of their origin. There they will be a lowly kingdom. 15 Egypt will be the lowliest of kingdoms and will never again exalt itself over the nations. I will make them so small they cannot rule over the nations. 16 It will never again be an object of trust(N) for the house of Israel, drawing attention to their iniquity of turning to the Egyptians. Then they will know that I am the Lord God.’”

Babylon Receives Egypt as Compensation

17 In the twenty-seventh year, in the first month, on the first day of the month, the word of the Lord came to me: 18 “Son of man, King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon made his army labor strenuously against Tyre.(O) Every head was made bald and every shoulder chafed, but he and his army received no compensation from Tyre for the labor he expended against it. 19 Therefore, this is what the Lord God says: I am going to give the land of Egypt to King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon,(P) and he will carry off its wealth, seizing its spoil and taking its plunder. This will be his army’s compensation. 20 I have given him the land of Egypt as the pay he labored for, since they worked for me.” This is the declaration of the Lord God. 21 “In that day I will cause a horn to sprout(Q) for the house of Israel, and I will enable you to speak out(R) among them. Then they will know that I am the Lord.”

Egypt’s Doom

30 The word of the Lord came to me: “Son of man, prophesy and say, ‘This is what the Lord God says:

Wail,(S) “Woe because of that day!”
For a day is near;
a day belonging to the Lord is near.(T)
It will be a day of clouds,(U)
a time of doom[g] for the nations.
A sword will come against Egypt,
and there will be anguish in Cush
when the slain fall in Egypt,
and its wealth is taken away,
and its foundations are demolished.
Cush, Put, and Lud,(V)
and all the various foreign troops,[h]
plus Libya[i] and the men of the covenant land
will fall by the sword along with them.
This is what the Lord says:
Those who support Egypt will fall,
and its proud strength will collapse.
From Migdol to Syene
they will fall within it by the sword.
This is the declaration of the Lord God.
They will be desolate
among[j] desolate lands,
and their cities will lie
among ruined[k] cities.(W)
They will know that I am the Lord
when I set fire to Egypt(X)
and all its allies are shattered.

On that day, messengers will go out from me in ships(Y) to terrify confident Cush. Anguish will come over them on the day of Egypt’s doom.[l] For indeed it is coming.

10 “‘This is what the Lord God says:

I will put an end to the hordes[m] of Egypt
by the hand of King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon.
11 He along with his people,
ruthless men from the nations,
will be brought in to destroy the land.
They will draw their swords against Egypt
and fill the land with the slain.(Z)
12 I will make the streams dry
and sell the land to evil men.(AA)
I will bring desolation
on the land and everything in it
by the hands of foreigners.
I, the Lord, have spoken.

13 “‘This is what the Lord God says:

I will destroy the idols and put an end
to the false gods in Memphis.(AB)
There will no longer be
a prince from the land of Egypt.
And I will instill fear in that land.
14 I will make Pathros(AC) desolate,
set fire to Zoan,
and execute judgments on Thebes.
15 I will pour out my wrath on Pelusium,
the stronghold of Egypt,
and will wipe out the hordes of Thebes.
16 I will set fire to Egypt;
Pelusium will writhe in anguish,
Thebes will be breached,
and Memphis will face foes in broad daylight.[n]
17 The young men of On[o] and Pi-beseth
will fall by the sword,
and those cities[p] will go into captivity.
18 The day will be dark[q] in Tehaphnehes,
when I break the yoke of Egypt there
and its proud strength
comes to an end in the city.
A cloud(AD) will cover Tehaphnehes,[r]
and its surrounding villages will go into captivity.
19 So I will execute judgments against Egypt,
and they will know that I am the Lord.’”

Pharaoh’s Power Broken

20 In the eleventh year, in the first month, on the seventh day of the month, the word of the Lord came to me: 21 “Son of man, I have broken the arm(AE) of Pharaoh king of Egypt. Look, it has not been bandaged—no medicine has been applied and no splint put on to bandage it so that it can grow strong enough to handle a sword. 22 Therefore, this is what the Lord God says: Look! I am against Pharaoh king of Egypt. I will break his arms, both the strong one and the one already broken, and will make the sword fall from his hand. 23 I will disperse the Egyptians among the nations and scatter them among the countries.(AF) 24 I will strengthen the arms of Babylon’s king and place my sword(AG) in his hand. But I will break the arms of Pharaoh, and he will groan before him as a mortally wounded man. 25 I will strengthen the arms of Babylon’s king, but Pharaoh’s arms will fall. They will know that I am the Lord when I place my sword in the hand of Babylon’s king and he wields it against the land of Egypt. 26 When I disperse the Egyptians among the nations and scatter them among the countries, they will know that I am the Lord.”

Hebrews 11:32-12:13

32 And what more can I say? Time is too short for me to tell about Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah,(A) David, Samuel, and the prophets,(B) 33 who by faith conquered kingdoms,(C) administered justice, obtained promises, shut the mouths of lions,(D) 34 quenched the raging of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, gained strength in weakness, became mighty in battle, and put foreign armies to flight.(E) 35 Women received their dead, raised to life again. Other people were tortured, not accepting release, so that they might gain a better resurrection. 36 Others experienced mockings and scourgings, as well as bonds and imprisonment.(F) 37 They were stoned,[a](G) they were sawed in two, they died by the sword, they wandered about in sheepskins, in goatskins,(H) destitute, afflicted, and mistreated. 38 The world was not worthy of them. They wandered in deserts and on mountains, hiding in caves and holes in the ground.

39 All these were approved through their faith, but they did not receive what was promised, 40 since God had provided something better for us, so that they would not be made perfect without us.(I)

The Call to Endurance

12 Therefore, since we also have such a large cloud of witnesses(J) surrounding us, let us lay aside every hindrance and the sin that so easily ensnares us. Let us run with endurance(K) the race that lies before us, keeping our eyes on Jesus,[b] the source and perfecter[c] of our faith. For the joy that lay before him,[d] he endured the cross, despising the shame,(L) and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Fatherly Discipline

For consider him who endured such hostility from sinners against himself, so that you won’t grow weary and give up.(M) In struggling against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood. And you have forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as sons:

My son, do not take the Lord’s discipline lightly
or lose heart when you are reproved by him,
for the Lord disciplines the one he loves
and punishes every son he receives.[e](N)

Endure suffering as discipline: God is dealing with you as sons. For what son is there that a father does not discipline? But if you are without discipline—which all receive[f]—then you are illegitimate children and not sons.(O) Furthermore, we had human fathers discipline us, and we respected them. Shouldn’t we submit even more to the Father of spirits and live?(P) 10 For they disciplined us for a short time based on what seemed good to them, but he does it for our benefit, so that we can share his holiness.(Q) 11 No discipline seems enjoyable at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it yields the peaceful fruit(R) of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.(S)

12 Therefore, strengthen your tired hands and weakened knees,(T) 13 and make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be dislocated[g] but healed instead.(U)

Ezekiel 27:1-28:26, Hebrews 11:17-31, Psalms 111:1-10, Proverbs 27:15-16

Today is the 13th day of November. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian. It’s great to be here with you on this 317th day of the year, which is our 317th day together as we’re making our way to the Scriptures this year. We’re continuing to work our way through the book of Ezekiel in the Old Testament and the book of Hebrews in the New. And we’re reading from the Christian Standard Bible this week. Today, Ezekiel chapters 27 and 28.

Commentary:

Alright. So, yesterday we were talking about what is known as the “hall of faith” found here in the book of Hebrews. And, so, we continued walking down that hall of faith in today’s reading. And, so, what we’ve done basically is begin in the book of Genesis and then the author of Hebrews begins to point out instances in the Hebrew Scriptures where faith was like the irreplaceable part of the story. And, so, we spent all of our time walking down those examples in today’s reading from the Old Testament, right? So, it was by faith that Abraham offered Isaac as a sacrifice for God was testing him. It was by faith that Isaac promised blessings for the future of his sons, Jacob and Esau. It was by faith that Jacob when he was old and dying, blessed Joseph’s sons. It was by faith that Joseph when he was about to die talked about leaving Egypt. It was by faith that Moses parents hid him for three months when he was born. It was by faith that Moses, when he grew up, refused to be identified with Pharaoh’s daughter. It was by faith that Moses left the land of Egypt, not fearing the king’s anger. It was by faith that Moses commanded the people of Israel to keep the Passover. It was by faith that the people of Israel went right through the Red Sea as they were on dry ground. It was by faith that the people of Israel marched around Jericho for seven days and the walls crashed down. It was by faith that Rahab the prostitute was not destroyed. So, you can see it was “by faith”, that phrase pounded over and over as we’re looking at the examples simply starting at the beginning of the Bible and working our way forward. This is because the author, the writer of Hebrews was pointing out something that had always been obvious but hadn’t been seen, hadn’t been understood in this context. And the larger point is the same point that the apostle Paul made in his writings, it was by faith that all of these things happened not by adherence to some sort of code or ethic. It was by faith. Faith was the component that…that changed all of the stories. Like today We worked from Genesis all the way to the book of Joshua and without faith all of the major characters and all of the major decisions of those stories that carry the narrative forward in the Bible wouldn’t have happened. Like what if this was the hall of disbelief that we were walking down and all of these people had the supreme opportunity to live by faith with God in covenant, but they chose not to, right? We would have…we would either not have the Bible or we would have a different Bible. And this is the point that’s being made. Like, faith is the key to our union with God and our awareness of the spiritual realms. Faith has always been the essential component of life with God. It still is. Nothing has changed there. Without faith we can’t please God. And in all of the examples that we read of today in the hall of faith, God responded to their faith. So, we’re talking about faith because we’re walking down this hall of faith, but we have to think about our own faith. We can certainly look and go, like, “He's…that’s right…that’s right…faith was the thing because all the way back to the beginning I can see that now.” But what about your faith? What about our faith right now? Because what we are putting our faith in is essentially what we are giving our hearts to in worship as if it were God, as if it were going to be able to bring us life. So, let’s think about it because that’s the point. That’s what the author of Hebrews is trying to show here. Where is your faith because without it you’re going nowhere? So, it would be a good thing to not lose it, and it would be a good thing to know where it is at all times. So, it comes down to, like, in whom, or in what have we put our faith? We see from the hall of faith with…that when people against all odds put their faith in God, God responds. That hasn’t changed. So, maybe we’re waiting for God to respond only to sit down and realize we do not have faith that He will and we have put our faith in someone or something else. Or maybe we put our faith in ourselves and we’ve gotta dig out of this. Maybe our faith is in the wrong place. Something to think about today.

Prayer:

Holy Spirit we invite You to help us think about that, to begin to unpack where is we’re putting our faith because it’s been made abundantly clear, we will never please You without faith. And, so, forgive us for all of the times that we’ve tried to navigate without it or that we’ve put our faith in something that can’t deliver, and given our hearts in worship to that thing or that person. Forgive us for these things. We see the foolishness of our ways. We place our faith, all of it…all of it…there is no plan B…all of it is in You and You alone. We invite You Holy Spirit to come into that. Show us all of the areas that we’ve placed our faith in other things. We pray this in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Ezekiel 27-28

The Sinking of Tyre

27 The word of the Lord came to me: “Now, son of man, lament for Tyre.(A) Say to Tyre, who is located at the entrance of the sea, merchant of the peoples(B) to many coasts and islands, ‘This is what the Lord God says:

Tyre, you declared,
“I am perfect in beauty.”
Your realm was in the heart of the sea;
your builders perfected your beauty.
They constructed all your planking
with pine trees from Senir.(C)
They took a cedar from Lebanon
to make a mast for you.
They made your oars of oaks from Bashan.
They made your deck of cypress wood
from the coasts of Cyprus,(D)
inlaid with ivory.
Your sail was made of
fine embroidered linen from Egypt,
and served as your banner.
Your awning was of blue and purple fabric
from the coasts of Elishah.
The inhabitants of Sidon and Arvad(E)
were your rowers.
Your wise men were within you, Tyre;
they were your captains.
The elders of Gebal and its wise men(F)
were within you, repairing your leaks.
“‘All the ships of the sea and their sailors
came to you to barter for your goods.
10 Men of Persia, Lud, and Put(G)
were in your army, serving as your warriors.
They hung shields and helmets in you;
they gave you splendor.
11 Men of Arvad and Helech
were stationed on your walls all around,
and Gammadites were in your towers.
They hung their shields[a] all around your walls;
they perfected your beauty.

12 “‘Tarshish(H) was your trading partner because of your abundant wealth of every kind. They exchanged silver, iron, tin, and lead for your merchandise. 13 Javan, Tubal, and Meshech(I) were your merchants. They exchanged slaves[b] and bronze utensils for your goods. 14 Those from Beth-togarmah(J) exchanged horses, war horses, and mules for your merchandise. 15 Men of Dedan[c](K) were also your merchants; many coasts and islands were your regular markets. They brought back ivory tusks(L) and ebony as your payment. 16 Aram[d] was your trading partner because of your numerous products. They exchanged turquoise,[e] purple and embroidered cloth, fine linen, coral,[f] and rubies[g] for your merchandise. 17 Judah and the land of Israel were your merchants. They exchanged wheat from Minnith,(M) meal,[h] honey, oil, and balm, for your goods. 18 Damascus was also your trading partner because of your numerous products and your abundant wealth of every kind, trading in wine from Helbon and white wool.[i] 19 Vedan[j] and Javan from Uzal[k](N) dealt in your merchandise; wrought iron, cassia,(O) and aromatic cane were exchanged for your goods. 20 Dedan(P) was your merchant in saddlecloths for riding. 21 Arabia and all the princes of Kedar were your business partners, trading with you in lambs, rams, and goats. 22 The merchants of Sheba(Q) and Raamah traded with you. For your merchandise they exchanged the best of all spices and all kinds of precious stones as well as gold.(R) 23 Haran, Canneh, Eden,(S) the merchants of Sheba, Asshur,(T) and Chilmad traded with you. 24 They were your merchants in choice garments, cloaks of blue and embroidered materials, and multicolored carpets,[l] which were bound and secured with cords in your marketplace. 25 Ships of Tarshish(U) were the carriers for your goods.

“‘So you became full and heavily loaded[m]
in the heart of the sea.
26 Your rowers have brought you
onto the high seas,(V)
but the east wind has wrecked you
in the heart of the sea.
27 Your wealth, merchandise, and goods,
your sailors and captains,
those who repair your leaks,
those who barter for your goods,
and all the warriors on board,
with all the other people within you,
sink into the heart of the sea
on the day of your downfall.

28 “‘The countryside shakes
at the sound of your sailors’ cries.(W)
29 All the oarsmen
disembark from their ships.
The sailors and all the captains of the sea
stand on the shore.
30 Because of you, they raise their voices
and cry out bitterly.
They throw dust on their heads;(X)
they roll in ashes.
31 They shave their heads because of you
and wrap themselves in sackcloth.
They weep over you
with deep anguish and bitter mourning.

32 “‘In their wailing they lament for you,(Y)
mourning over you:
“Who was like Tyre,
silenced[n] in the middle of the sea?
33 When your merchandise was unloaded from the seas,
you satisfied many peoples.
You enriched the kings of the earth
with your abundant wealth and goods.
34 Now you are wrecked by the sea
in the depths of the waters;
your goods and the people within you
have gone down.
35 All the inhabitants of the coasts and islands
are appalled(Z) at you.
Their kings shudder with fear;
their faces are contorted.
36 Those who trade among the peoples
scoff[o](AA) at you;
you have become an object of horror
and will never exist again.”’” (AB)

The Fall of Tyre’s Ruler

28 The word of the Lord came to me: “Son of man, say to the ruler of Tyre, ‘This is what the Lord God says: Your[p] heart is proud, and you have said, “I am a god;(AC) I sit in the seat of gods in the heart of the sea.” Yet you are a man and not a god, though you have regarded your heart as that of a god. Yes, you are wiser than Daniel;(AD) no secret is hidden from you! By your wisdom and understanding you have acquired wealth for yourself. You have acquired gold and silver for your treasuries.(AE) By your great skill in trading you have increased your wealth, but your heart has become proud because of your wealth.

“‘Therefore, this is what the Lord God says:

Because you regard your heart as that of a god,
I am about to bring strangers against you,
ruthless men from the nations.
They will draw their swords
against your magnificent wisdom
and will pierce your splendor.(AF)
They will bring you down to the Pit,(AG)
and you will die a violent death
in the heart of the sea.
Will you still say, “I am a god,”
in the presence of those who slay[q] you?
Yet you will be only a man, not a god,
in the hands of those who kill you.
10 You will die the death of the uncircumcised(AH)
at the hands of strangers.(AI)
For I have spoken.

This is the declaration of the Lord God.’”

A Lament for Tyre’s King

11 The word of the Lord came to me: 12 “Son of man, lament(AJ) for the king of Tyre and say to him, ‘This is what the Lord God says:

You were the seal[r] of perfection,[s]
full of wisdom and perfect in beauty.(AK)
13 You were in Eden,(AL) the garden of God.
Every kind of precious stone covered you:
carnelian, topaz, and diamond,[t]
beryl, onyx, and jasper,
lapis lazuli, turquoise[u] and emerald.[v]
Your mountings and settings were crafted in gold;(AM)
they were prepared on the day you were created.
14 You were an anointed guardian cherub,(AN)
for[w] I had appointed you.
You were on the holy mountain of God;
you walked among the fiery stones.
15 From the day you were created
you were blameless in your ways
until wickedness was found in you.
16 Through the abundance of your trade,
you were filled with violence, and you sinned.
So I expelled you in disgrace
from the mountain of God,
and banished you, guardian cherub,[x]
from among the fiery stones.
17 Your heart became proud because of your beauty;(AO)
For the sake of your splendor
you corrupted your wisdom.
So I threw you down to the ground;[y]
I made you a spectacle before kings.
18 You profaned your sanctuaries
by the magnitude of your iniquities
in your dishonest trade.
So I made fire come from within you,
and it consumed you.(AP)
I reduced you to ashes on the ground
in the sight of everyone watching you.
19 All those who know you among the peoples
are appalled at you.
You have become an object of horror
and will never exist again.’”(AQ)

A Prophecy against Sidon

20 The word of the Lord came to me: 21 “Son of man, face Sidon(AR) and prophesy against it. 22 You are to say, ‘This is what the Lord God says:

Look! I am against you, Sidon,(AS)
and I will display my glory within you.
They will know that I am the Lord
when I execute judgments against her(AT)
and demonstrate my holiness through her.
23 I will send a plague against her(AU)
and bloodshed in her streets;
the slain will fall within her,
while the sword is against her[z] on every side.
Then they will know that I am the Lord.

24 “‘The house of Israel will no longer be hurt by[aa] prickly briers or painful thorns(AV) from all their neighbors who treat them with contempt. Then they will know that I am the Lord God.

25 “‘This is what the Lord God says: When I gather the house of Israel(AW) from the peoples where they are scattered, I will demonstrate my holiness through them in the sight of the nations, and they will live in their own land, which I gave to my servant Jacob. 26 They will live there securely,(AX) build houses, and plant vineyards.(AY) They will live securely when I execute judgments(AZ) against all their neighbors who treat them with contempt. Then they will know that I am the Lord their God.’”

Ezekiel 24:1-26:21, Hebrews 11:1-16, Psalms 110:1-7, Proverbs 27:14

Today is the 12th day of November. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian and it is a pleasure to be here with you today. As we come around the global campfire and…well…come in out of whatever’s going on and just set it aside and allow this to be a safe place for God’s word to wash into our lives and that will take us back into the book of Ezekiel as we continue that journey. We’re reading from the Christian Standard Bible this week. Ezekiel chapter 24, 25 and 26 today.

Commentary:

Okay. So, as we’ve been moving our way through the book of Hebrews, we’ve been seeing this argument and the implications of what’s being said laid out very meticulously. So…so, the implications of the good news or the gospel have become clear. Because of Jesus, who is our great and final high priest, through Him we can…we can, with boldness, enter God’s presence as a son or a daughter righteous before God. And, so, today we started talking about what it is that must be present in order for that to happen. Faith. So, like, just because we’re reading the book of Hebrews, like this is not the first time we’ve ever talked about faith. We’ve examined it from every angle because we’ve been reading the writings of the apostle Paul and this is a primary theme for him, but Hebrews gives us a definition and its famous and it’s memorable and it’s quotable, right? “Faith reveals the reality of what we’re hoping for. Faith itself is the evidence of what we can’t see.” So, in other words, faith lets us see a reality and begin moving into that reality and living in that reality even though it’s not reached its full completion. Faith gives substance to what is yet unseen. And it’s often that we’re praying for more faith, right? We hear it on a can annual basis, “increase my faith. I need more faith.” But if this is what faith is, if it is a substance of…of what we can’t see…a reality of what we hope for, then we have to understand that it’s baked into our experience as human beings. We are all living by faith because we all have faith in things we can’t see, right? So like…so like, we all probably have somebody in our lives that we love. Can you see it? Right? Can you see the love? You can’t. You can see the evidence of the love, you can see the implications of the love, the repercussions of the love, but you can’t see it. Or how about your next breath? You have faith that it’s going to come, so much so that you don’t even think about it. So, we’re exercising faith all of the time, every day, somehow. It’s a part of our experience, but when it comes to our spirituality and our union with God all the sudden it becomes some sort of different category. So, the writer of Hebrews isn’t trying to prove that faith is a real thing, that it actually exists. Who’s gonna argue with that? The point was, faith had always been a part of the Hebrew story and we have to remember, Hebrews is written from a Hebrew context to Hebrews and this had always been a part of their story, in fact this had always been essential to the story. Faith, as Paul so constantly laid out, came before any law, before any ritual, before any behavior, before any tabernacle, before any temple. Faith was the beginning of the story. It’s the centerpiece. It’s the cornerstone. And making that point is very, very important to the writer of Hebrews because they lead us down a path that we have begun to walk today and will continue to walk over the next couple days. It’s famously known as “the hall of faith”, right? Because the writer of Hebrews is showing this point to be true - all of these famous important characters found in the Hebrew Scriptures, the Old Testament - all of their stories could not have happened without faith, right? It was my faith that Abel brought a more acceptable offering to God than Cain. It was my faith that Enoch was taken into heaven without dying. It was by faith Noah built a large boat to save his family from the flood. It was my faith that Abraham obeyed God when God called him to leave his home and go somewhere he didn’t even know. He went even though he didn’t know where he was going. It was by faith Sarah had a child even though she was too old to have children and through that child this promise has been brought to fruition. The people are like the sand on the seashore. So, we see what’s happening here. The author of Hebrews is simply going back to the beginning, back to Genesis, and started working forward through the stories that are there, revealing that faith is the thing that activated the stories. Faith is the essential piece. But why? Like, why was the apostle Paul pounding this theme home throughout his writings? And why is the author of Hebrews pounding this home almost to the point of redundancy? It’s because the people, in order to accept, in order to see the revelation that a new covenant with God through Jesus was being offered, the only way that anyone could have participated, could’ve come into that covenantal relationship was going to be by and through faith. It would take faith to enter into that relationship and that is no less true today. So, as we read these stories starting with Genesis and continue walking down this hall of faith, we…these are…these were not the exceptions to the rule. They’re simply a list of people that serve as the examples for everybody, including you, and including me. Faith activated their story and we’re not gonns get anywhere without faith in our story. I mean, the writer of Hebrews put it clearly, “it is impossible to please God without faith.” So, that leaves us with an understanding that we probably already had, but it puts it really front and center because now we have to think, “where is my faith?” Right “What have I put my faith in?” Like, when I leave this little oasis around this global campfire and I have to go back out into that world and complete my day. “What have I put my faith in?”

Prayer:

Holy Spirit, we invite You into that question. Sometimes it’s those sorts of questions, they’re just simple, and they seem easy enough to answer until we sit with them and realize that You have begun to unravel us, that You begin to peel back the layers, that You are after things inside of us that are keeping us in fear and doubt and not faith. And, so, reveal those things to us. We open ourselves to You completely and fully declaring nothing is off-limits here. Nothing is off limits to You. We trust You, we love You and we believe that it is our good, that it is our freedom, that it is our sanctification that You are after, and we are after that to. And, so, we collaborate, we surrender. Come, Holy Spirit show us the places throughout the rest of this day that we’ve put our faith in things that aren’t You, and that can’t deliver. Come Holy Spirit we pray. In Jesus’ name we ask. Amen.

Ezekiel 24-26

Parable of the Boiling Pot

24 The word of the Lord came to me in the ninth year, in the tenth month, on the tenth day of the month: “Son of man, write down today’s date, this very day. The king of Babylon has laid siege to Jerusalem this very day.(A) Now speak a parable(B) to the rebellious house. Tell them, ‘This is what the Lord God says:

Put the pot(C) on the fire—
put it on,
and then pour water into it!
Place the pieces of meat in it,
every good piece—
thigh and shoulder.
Fill it with choice bones.
Take the choicest of the flock
and also pile up the fuel[a] under it.
Bring it to a boil
and cook the bones in it.

“‘Therefore, this is what the Lord God says:

Woe to the city of bloodshed,(D)
the pot that has corrosion inside it,
and its corrosion has not come out of it!
Empty it piece by piece;
lots should not be cast for its contents.
For the blood she shed[b] is still within her.
She put it out on the bare rock;
she didn’t pour it on the ground
to cover it with dust.(E)
In order to stir up wrath and take vengeance,(F)
I have put her blood on the bare rock,
so that it would not be covered.

“‘Therefore, this is what the Lord God says:

Woe to the city of bloodshed!(G)
I myself will make the pile of kindling large.
10 Pile on the logs and kindle the fire!
Cook the meat well
and mix in the spices![c][d]
Let the bones be burned!
11 Set the empty pot on its coals
so that it becomes hot and its copper glows.
Then its impurity will melt inside it;
its corrosion will be consumed.(H)
12 It has frustrated every effort;[e]
its thick corrosion will not come off.
Into the fire with its corrosion!
13 Because of the depravity of your uncleanness—
since I tried to purify you,
but you would not be purified from your uncleanness—
you will not be pure again
until I have satisfied my wrath on you.(I)
14 I, the Lord, have spoken.
It is coming, and I will do it!(J)
I will not refrain, I will not show pity,
and I will not relent.
I[f] will judge you
according to your ways and deeds.(K)

This is the declaration of the Lord God.’”

The Death of Ezekiel’s Wife: A Sign

15 Then the word of the Lord came to me: 16 “Son of man, I am about to take the delight of your eyes(L) away from you with a fatal blow. But you must not lament or weep or let your tears flow.(M) 17 Groan quietly; do not observe mourning rites for the dead.(N) Put on your turban and strap your sandals on your feet; do not cover your mustache or eat the bread of mourners.”[g](O)

18 I spoke to the people in the morning, and my wife died in the evening. The next morning I did just as I was commanded. 19 Then the people asked me, “Won’t you tell us what these things you are doing mean for us?”

20 So I answered them: “The word of the Lord came to me: 21 Say to the house of Israel, ‘This is what the Lord God says: I am about to desecrate my sanctuary, the pride of your power, the delight of your eyes, and the desire of your heart. Also, the sons and daughters you left behind will fall by the sword.(P) 22 Then you will do just as I have done: You will not cover your mustache or eat the bread of mourners. 23 Your turbans will remain on your heads and your sandals on your feet. You will not lament or weep(Q) but will waste away(R) because of your iniquities and will groan to one another. 24 Now Ezekiel will be a sign for you.(S) You will do everything that he has done. When this happens, you will know that I am the Lord God.’

25 “As for you, son of man, know that on that day I will take from them their stronghold—their pride and joy, the delight of their eyes, and the longing of their hearts—as well as their sons and daughters. 26 On that day a fugitive will come to you and report the news.(T) 27 On that day your mouth will be opened to talk with him; you will speak and no longer be mute.(U) So you will be a sign for them, and they will know that I am the Lord.”

Prophecies Against the Nations

Judgment against Ammon

25 Then the word of the Lord came to me: “Son of man, face the Ammonites and prophesy against them.(V) Say to the Ammonites, ‘Hear the word of the Lord God: This is what the Lord God says: Because you said, “Aha!” (W) about my sanctuary when it was desecrated, about the land of Israel when it was laid waste, and about the house of Judah when they went into exile, therefore I am about to give you to the people of the east as a possession. They will set up their encampments and pitch their tents among you. They will eat your fruit and drink your milk. I will make Rabbah a pasture(X) for camels and Ammon a resting place for sheep. Then you will know that I am the Lord.

“‘For this is what the Lord God says: Because you clapped your hands,(Y) stamped your feet, and rejoiced over the land of Israel with wholehearted contempt, therefore I am about to stretch out my hand against you(Z) and give you as plunder to the nations. I will cut you off from the peoples and eliminate you from the countries. I will destroy you, and you will know that I am the Lord.

Judgment against Moab

“‘This is what the Lord God says: Because Moab and Seir said,(AA) “Look, the house of Judah is like all the other nations.” Therefore I am about to expose Moab’s flank beginning with its[h] frontier cities, the splendor of the land: Beth-jeshimoth, Baal-meon,(AB) and Kiriathaim. 10 I will give it along with Ammon to the people of the east as a possession, so that Ammon will not be remembered among the nations. 11 So I will execute judgments against Moab, and they will know that I am the Lord.

Judgment against Edom

12 “‘This is what the Lord God says: Because Edom acted vengefully against the house of Judah(AC) and incurred grievous guilt by taking revenge on them, 13 therefore this is what the Lord God says: I will stretch out my hand against Edom and cut off both man and animal from it. I will make it a wasteland; they will fall by the sword from Teman to Dedan. 14 I will take my vengeance(AD) on Edom through my people Israel, and they will deal with Edom according to my anger and wrath. So they will know my vengeance. This is the declaration of the Lord God.

Judgment against Philistia

15 “‘This is what the Lord God says: Because the Philistines acted in vengeance and took revenge with deep contempt,(AE) destroying because of their perpetual hatred, 16 therefore this is what the Lord God says: I am about to stretch out my hand against the Philistines,(AF) cutting off the Cherethites and wiping out what remains of the coastal peoples.[i](AG) 17 I will execute severe vengeance against them with furious rebukes. They will know that I am the Lord(AH) when I take my vengeance on them.’”

The Downfall of Tyre

26 In the eleventh year, on the first day of the month, the word of the Lord came to me: “Son of man, because Tyre(AI) said about Jerusalem, ‘Aha!(AJ) The gateway to the peoples is shattered. She has been turned over to me.[j] I will be filled now that she lies in ruins,’ therefore this is what the Lord God says: See, I am against you, Tyre!(AK) I will raise up many nations against you, just as the sea raises its waves. They will destroy the walls of Tyre and demolish her towers. I will scrape the soil from her and turn her into a bare rock. She will become a place in the sea to spread nets, for I have spoken.” This is the declaration of the Lord God. “She will become plunder for the nations,(AL) and her villages on the mainland will be slaughtered by the sword.(AM) Then they will know that I am the Lord.”

For this is what the Lord God says: “See, I am about to bring King Nebuchadnezzar[k] of Babylon, king of kings,(AN) against Tyre from the north with horses, chariots, cavalry, and a huge assembly of troops. He will slaughter your villages on the mainland with the sword. He will set up siege works,(AO) build a ramp, and raise a wall of shields against you. He will direct the blows of his battering rams against your walls and tear down your towers with his iron tools. 10 His horses will be so numerous that their dust will cover you. When he enters your gates as an army entering a breached city, your walls will shake from the noise of cavalry, wagons, and chariots. 11 He will trample all your streets with the hooves of his horses.(AP) He will slaughter your people with the sword, and your mighty pillars will fall to the ground. 12 They will take your wealth as spoil and plunder your merchandise.(AQ) They will also demolish your walls and tear down your beautiful homes. Then they will throw your stones, timber, and soil into the water. 13 I will put an end to the noise of your songs,(AR) and the sound of your lyres will no longer be heard. 14 I will turn you into a bare rock, and you will be a place to spread nets. You will never be rebuilt, for I, the Lord, have spoken.”(AS) This is the declaration of the Lord God.

15 This is what the Lord God says to Tyre: “Won’t the coasts and islands quake at the sound of your downfall,(AT) when the wounded groan and slaughter occurs within you? 16 All the princes of the sea will descend from their thrones,(AU) remove their robes, and strip off their embroidered garments. They will clothe themselves with trembling; they will sit on the ground, tremble continually, and be appalled(AV) at you. 17 Then they will lament(AW) for you and say of you,

‘How you have perished, city of renown,
you who were populated from the seas![l]
She who was powerful on the sea,
she and all of her inhabitants
inflicted their terror.[m]
18 Now the coastlands tremble(AX)
on the day of your downfall;
the islands in the sea
are alarmed by your demise.’”

19 For this is what the Lord God says: “When I make you a ruined city like other deserted cities, when I raise up the deep against you so that the mighty waters cover you, 20 then I will bring you down to be with those who descend to the Pit,(AY) to the people of antiquity. I will make you dwell in the underworld[n] like[o] the ancient ruins, with those who descend to the Pit, so that you will no longer be inhabited or display your splendor[p] in the land of the living.(AZ) 21 I will make you an object of horror, and you will no longer exist.(BA) You will be sought but will never be found again.” This is the declaration of the Lord God.

Hebrews 11:1-16

Living by Faith

11 Now faith is the reality[a] of what is hoped for, the proof[b] of what is not seen.(A) For by it our ancestors won God’s approval.

By faith we understand that the universe was[c] created by the word of God,(B) so that what is seen was made from things that are not visible.[d]

By faith Abel offered to God a better sacrifice than Cain did. By faith he was approved as a righteous man, because God approved his gifts, and even though he is dead, he still speaks through his faith.(C)

By faith Enoch was taken away, and so he did not experience death. He was not to be found because God took him away.[e] For before he was taken away, he was approved as one who pleased God.(D) Now without faith it is impossible to please God, since the one who draws near to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.

By faith Noah, after he was warned about what was not yet seen and motivated by godly fear, built an ark to deliver his family. By faith he condemned the world and became an heir of the righteousness that comes by faith.(E)

By faith Abraham, when he was called, obeyed and set out for a place that he was going to receive as an inheritance. He went out, even though he did not know where he was going.(F) By faith he stayed as a foreigner in the land of promise, living in tents as did Isaac and Jacob, coheirs of the same promise.(G) 10 For he was looking forward to the city that has foundations, whose architect and builder is God.(H)

11 By faith even Sarah herself, when she was unable to have children, received power to conceive offspring, even though she was past the age, since she[f] considered that the one who had promised was faithful.(I) 12 Therefore, from one man—in fact, from one as good as dead—came offspring as numerous as the stars of the sky and as innumerable as the grains of sand along the seashore.(J)

13 These all died in faith, although they had not received the things that were promised. But they saw them from a distance,(K) greeted them, and confessed that they were foreigners and temporary residents on the earth.(L) 14 Now those who say such things make it clear that they are seeking a homeland. 15 If they were thinking about where they came from, they would have had an opportunity to return. 16 But they now desire a better place—a heavenly one. Therefore, God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them.(M)

The Priestly King

A psalm of David.

This is the declaration of the Lord
to my Lord:
“Sit at my right hand
until I make your enemies your footstool.”(A)
The Lord will extend your mighty scepter from Zion.
Rule[a] over your surrounding[b] enemies.(B)
Your people will volunteer

Ezekiel 23:1-49, Hebrews 10:18-39, Psalms 109:1-31, Proverbs 27:13

Today is the 11th day of November. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian and it is, of course, great to be here with you as we take this next step forward in the Scriptures this year. And as we get our work we going we’re reading from the Christian Standard Bible this week. Ezekiel chapter 23 today.

Commentary:

Okay. So, let’s just…let’s just reread a passage from our reading in Ezekiel today. “Yet she multiplied her acts of promiscuity, remembering the days of her youth when she acted like a prostitute in the land of Egypt and lusted after her lovers whose sexual members were like those of donkeys and whose emission was like that of stallions. So, you revisited the depravity of your youth when the Egyptians caressed your nipples to enjoy your youthful breasts.” So, are we all paying attention here? Like is everyone paying attention right now, because that was sort of the point? So, I mean Ezekiel chapter 23 is one of the most graphic portions in the Scriptures, and pretty much not a year goes by that I don’t get a bunch of emails, like “I don’t why…what’s this doing in the Bible” kind of questions. And I guess the fundamental answer is because God said those things and they were written down by the prophet Ezekiel. So, I mean we can approach us a couple of ways. We can say, “ooo, I don’t like that kind of language being in my Bible. And, so, if God said it…well…I have a weird feeling about God. And yet as graphic as it might be, God is simply saying this is where you will end up if you do that. Or we could say, “what is going on here? Why is God choosing this particular imagery and memorializing it for all time in the Scriptures? If we simply go back and we remember the story of the baby girl lying in her blood left abandoned to die and then God shows up and says, “live”, and cares for her and meets her every need and she grows up to be beautiful and marries Him and they have children together that she then sacrifices and that she then abandons the Lord in favor of adulterous relationships with anyone that she can find, well then when we get to this kind of language in the 23rd chapter of Ezekiel it starts all making sense. God had entered into an exclusive covenantal relationship, the bonds of which were as powerful, if not more powerful than marriage itself because this is the language God chose to use and his vision was for an exclusive family, His family, set apart and made holy. And He offered painstakingly the parameters of what that would look like. If they would obey and live within that covenantal relationship as a people before their God, then there was nothing that they couldn’t do that the entire world would be blessed because of them. And yet their story, and we have read so much of this story by now that we know this by heart, they won’t be faithful, they won’t stay true. And God sends prophet after profit saying, “like this is what you need to do. You need to return to me. You need to come home.” Finally, in the book of Ezekiel we get it, like full force, “this is what you are doing. You are inviting mixture. You are inviting all of these foreign lovers into our exclusive covenantal relationship. Your lust for other lovers is making you this gusting. Can’t you see how far you have fallen. You are sacrificing my children born in this exclusive covenantal relationship, these children who are set apart to me, these children that are holy, you are sacrificing them to fall God’s. Do you not see what you are doing?” Well, understanding this helps us understand why God is being sold graphic. Because we’re reading this, and we can be off put by it, but we certainly understand what’s being said here. Okay. So, if we can wrap our minds around what’s being said here and go, “okay. Alright. I…I see…I see that my heavenly Father…I see that the Lord here is exasperated and brokenhearted even. Sad, even. Jealous, even”, which He says He is on a number of occasions. So, we can get our minds around this and say, okay, I see what they…what they were doing but I wouldn’t think of sacrificing one of my children to an idol. So, that’s not me.” And yet really the point isn’t so much all of the things that they were doing. Those were the repercussions of the path they had chosen. It was the mixture, inviting other lovers into a covenantal relationship. And that can hit home pretty quickly. I mean we can say, “well I’m not committing adultery. I’m…like I’m faithful to my spouse.” Awesome. Awesome. Me too. We’re all supposed to be. But are we being faithful to God? And I’m not sure I need to like come up with a bunch of examples. I think we can just leave it there. This, what we have been reading is what unfaithfulness looks like, where it leads, how God feels about it, what it does to his heart. I mean, I’m a man, so I can process this from a male perspective and say that when God talks about other men fondling the one He loves, I don’t like the thought of that. I don’t think any of us do. And what God’s talking about here is those who are actually seeking these kind of adulterous relationships, those who are looking outside of a covenantal relationship to find some sort of life that they think is gonna make them more happy. And if will sit with it, if we’ll go into this, and the Bible offers us all kinds of opportunities just to go into places that we don’t necessarily want to examine. But if we’ll sit with us today with the imagery, with the starkness of it all and consider ourselves in the story then we may find we’ve been flirting with destruction in one way or another and it’s heartbreaking and it’s supposed to be. And maybe it’s time to stop.

Prayer:

Father we invite Your Holy Spirit into that. It’s a convicting thing so it’s an uncomfortable thing. And yet You…You have proven in the Scriptures that You…You don’t have a problem making us uncomfortable. If it’s an attempt to free us, to give us freedom, You don’t mind breaking through these uncomfortabilities. So, we invite Your Holy Spirit to show us places that we have chased other lovers, the places that we have broken faith with You. We repent. It’s so starkly on the page before us that we…we see it makes us uncomfortable as it’s supposed too. And, so, we’re facing it. Come Holy Spirit. Convict us of the places that we…that we are chasing life outside of You. We pray this in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Ezekiel 23

The Two Immoral Sisters

23 The word of the Lord came to me again: “Son of man, there were two women,(A) daughters of the same mother, who acted like prostitutes in Egypt,(B) behaving promiscuously in their youth. Their breasts were fondled there, and their virgin nipples caressed. The older one was named Oholah,[a] and her sister was Oholibah.[b] They became mine and gave birth to sons and daughters. As for their names, Oholah represents Samaria and Oholibah represents Jerusalem.

“Oholah acted like a prostitute even though she was mine. She lusted after her lovers, the Assyrians:(C) warriors dressed in blue, governors and prefects, all of them desirable young men, horsemen riding on steeds. She offered her sexual favors to them; all of them were the elite of Assyria. She defiled herself with all those she lusted after and with all their idols. She didn’t give up her promiscuity that began in Egypt,(D) when men slept with her in her youth, caressed her virgin nipples, and poured out their lust on her. Therefore, I handed her over to her lovers,(E) the Assyrians she lusted for. 10 They exposed her nakedness, seized her sons and daughters, and killed her with the sword. Since they executed judgment against her, she became notorious among women.

11 “Now her sister Oholibah saw this, but she was even more depraved in her lust than Oholah, and made her promiscuous acts worse than those of her sister.(F) 12 She lusted after the Assyrians:(G) governors and prefects, warriors splendidly dressed, horsemen riding on steeds, all of them desirable young men. 13 And I saw that she had defiled herself; both of them had taken the same path. 14 But she increased her promiscuity when she saw male figures carved on the wall,(H) images of the Chaldeans, engraved in bright red,(I) 15 wearing belts on their waists and flowing turbans on their heads; all of them looked like officers, a depiction of the Babylonians in Chaldea, their native land. 16 At the sight of them[c] she lusted after them and sent messengers to them in Chaldea.(J) 17 Then the Babylonians came to her,(K) to the bed of love, and defiled her with their lust. But after she was defiled by them, she turned away from them in disgust. 18 When she flaunted her promiscuity and exposed her nakedness, I turned away from her in disgust just as I turned away from her sister.(L) 19 Yet she multiplied her acts of promiscuity, remembering the days of her youth when she acted like a prostitute in the land of Egypt 20 and lusted after their lovers, whose sexual members[d] were like those of donkeys and whose emission was like that of stallions. 21 So you revisited the depravity of your youth, when the Egyptians caressed your nipples to enjoy your youthful breasts.(M)

22 “Therefore, Oholibah, this is what the Lord God says: I am going to incite your lovers against you, those you turned away from in disgust. I will bring them against you from every side: 23 the Babylonians and all the Chaldeans; Pekod, Shoa, and Koa;(N) and all the Assyrians with them—desirable young men, all of them governors and prefects, officers and administrators, all of them riding on steeds. 24 They will come against you with an assembly of peoples and with weapons, chariots, and[e] wagons. They will set themselves against you on every side with large and small shields and helmets. I will delegate judgment to them, and they will judge you by their own standards. 25 When I vent my jealous rage on you,(O) they will deal with you in wrath. They will cut off your nose and ears, and the rest of you[f] will fall by the sword. They will seize your sons and daughters, and the rest of you will be consumed by fire. 26 They will strip off your clothes and take your beautiful jewelry.(P) 27 So I will put an end to your depravity and sexual immorality, which began in the land of Egypt, and you will not look longingly at them or remember Egypt anymore.

28 “For this is what the Lord God says: I am going to hand you over to those you hate, to those you turned away from in disgust. 29 They will treat you with hatred, take all you have worked for, and leave you stark naked,(Q) so that the shame of your debauchery will be exposed, both your depravity and promiscuity. 30 These things will be done to you because you acted like a prostitute with the nations,(R) defiling yourself with their idols. 31 You have followed the path of your sister, so I will put her cup in your hand.”(S)

32 This is what the Lord God says:

“You will drink your sister’s cup,(T)
which is deep and wide.
You will be an object of[g] ridicule and scorn,
for it holds so much.(U)
33 You will be filled with drunkenness and grief,
with a cup of devastation and desolation,
the cup of your sister Samaria.
34 You will drink it and drain it;
then you will gnaw its broken pieces,
and tear your breasts.
For I have spoken.”
This is the declaration of the Lord God.

35 Therefore, this is what the Lord God says: “Because you have forgotten me(V) and cast me behind your back,(W) you must bear the consequences of your indecency and promiscuity.”

36 Then the Lord said to me: “Son of man, will you pass judgment against Oholah and Oholibah?(X) Then declare their detestable practices to them.(Y) 37 For they have committed adultery, and blood is on their hands; they have committed adultery with their idols. And the children they bore to me they have sacrificed in the fire[h] as food for the idols.(Z) 38 They also did this to me: they defiled my sanctuary(AA) on that same day and profaned my Sabbaths.(AB) 39 On the same day they slaughtered their children for their idols, they entered my sanctuary to profane it.(AC) Yes, that is what they did inside my house.

40 “In addition, they sent for men who came from far away when a messenger was dispatched to them. And look how they came! You bathed, painted your eyes,(AD) and adorned yourself with jewelry for them.(AE) 41 You sat on a luxurious couch with a table spread before it,(AF) on which you had set my incense and oil. 42 The sound of a carefree crowd was there. Drunkards[i] from the desert were brought in, along with common men. They put bracelets on the women’s hands and beautiful tiaras on their heads. 43 Then I said concerning this woman worn out by adultery: Will they[j] now have illicit sex with her, even her? 44 Yet they had sex with her as one does with a prostitute. This is how they had sex with Oholah and Oholibah, those depraved women. 45 But righteous men will judge them the way adulteresses(AG) and those who shed blood are judged, for they are adulteresses and blood is on their hands.

46 “This is what the Lord God says: Summon[k] an assembly against them and consign them to terror and plunder.(AH) 47 The assembly will stone them and cut them down with their swords.(AI) They will kill their sons and daughters and burn their houses. 48 So I will put an end to depravity in the land, and all the women will be admonished not to imitate your depraved behavior. 49 They will punish you for your depravity,(AJ) and you will bear the consequences for your sins of idolatry. Then you will know that I am the Lord God.”

Hebrews 10:18-39

18 Now where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer an offering for sin.

Exhortations to Godliness

19 Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have boldness to enter the sanctuary through the blood of Jesus(A) 20 he has inaugurated[a] for us a new and living way through the curtain (that is, through his flesh(B))— 21 and since we have a great high priest over the house of God,(C) 22 let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed in pure water.(D) 23 Let us hold on to the confession of our hope without wavering, since he who promised is faithful.(E) 24 And let us watch out for one another to provoke love and good works, 25 not neglecting to gather together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging each other,(F) and all the more as you see the day approaching.

Warning against Deliberate Sin

26 For if we deliberately go on sinning after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins,(G) 27 but a terrifying expectation of judgment and the fury of a fire about to consume the adversaries.(H) 28 Anyone who disregarded the law of Moses died without mercy, based on the testimony of two or three witnesses.(I) 29 How much worse punishment do you think one will deserve who has trampled on the Son of God, who has regarded as profane[b] the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace?(J) 30 For we know the one who has said,

Vengeance belongs to me; I will repay,[c][d]

and again,

The Lord will judge his people.(K)(L)

31 It is a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the living God.(M)

32 Remember the earlier days when, after you had been enlightened, you endured a hard struggle with sufferings.(N) 33 Sometimes you were publicly exposed to taunts and afflictions, and at other times you were companions of those who were treated that way.(O) 34 For you sympathized with the prisoners[e] and accepted with joy the confiscation of your possessions, because you know that you yourselves have a better and enduring possession.[f](P) 35 So don’t throw away your confidence, which has a great reward.(Q) 36 For you need endurance, so that after you have done God’s will, you may receive what was promised.(R)

37 For yet in a very little while,
the Coming One will come and not delay.
38 But my righteous one[g] will live by faith;
and if he draws back,
I have no pleasure[h] in him.[i](S)

39 But we are not those who draw back and are destroyed, but those who have faith and are saved.

Psalm 109

Prayer against an Enemy

For the choir director. A psalm of David.

God of my praise, do not be silent.(A)

For wicked and deceitful mouths open against me;
they speak against me with lying tongues.(B)
They surround me with hateful words
and attack me without cause.(C)
In return for my love they accuse me,
but I continue to pray.[a](D)
They repay me evil for good,
and hatred for my love.(E)

Set a wicked person over him;
let an accuser[b] stand at his right hand.(F)
When he is judged, let him be found guilty,
and let his prayer be counted as sin.(G)
Let his days be few;
let another take over his position.(H)
Let his children be fatherless
and his wife a widow.(I)
10 Let his children wander as beggars,
searching for food far[c] from their demolished homes.(J)
11 Let a creditor seize all he has;
let strangers plunder what he has worked for.(K)
12 Let no one show him kindness,
and let no one be gracious to his fatherless children.(L)
13 Let the line of his descendants be cut off;
let their name be blotted out in the next generation.(M)
14 Let the iniquity of his fathers
be remembered before the Lord,(N)
and do not let his mother’s sin be blotted out.(O)
15 Let their sins[d] always remain before the Lord,
and let him remove[e] all memory of them from the earth.(P)

16 For he did not think to show kindness,
but pursued the suffering, needy, and brokenhearted
in order to put them to death.(Q)
17 He loved cursing—let it fall on him;
he took no delight in blessing—let it be far from him.(R)
18 He wore cursing like his coat—
let it enter his body like water
and go into his bones like oil.(S)
19 Let it be like a robe he wraps around himself,
like a belt he always wears.(T)
20 Let this be the Lord’s payment to my accusers,
to those who speak evil against me.(U)

21 But you, Lord, my Lord,
deal kindly with me for your name’s sake;(V)
because your faithful love is good, rescue me.(W)
22 For I am suffering and needy;(X)
my heart is wounded within me.(Y)
23 I fade away like a lengthening shadow;(Z)
I am shaken off like a locust.
24 My knees are weak from fasting,
and my body is emaciated.[f](AA)
25 I have become an object of ridicule to my accusers;[g]
when they see me, they shake their heads in scorn.(AB)

26 Help me, Lord my God;
save me according to your faithful love(AC)
27 so they may know that this is your hand
and that you, Lord, have done it.(AD)
28 Though they curse, you will bless.
When they rise up, they will be put to shame,
but your servant will rejoice.(AE)
29 My accusers will be clothed with disgrace;
they will wear their shame like a cloak.(AF)
30 I will fervently thank the Lord with my mouth;
I will praise him in the presence of many.(AG)
31 For he stands at the right hand of the needy
to save him from those who would condemn him.(AH)
