1 Kings 15:25-17:24, Acts 10:24-48, Psalms 134:1-3, Proverbs 17:9-11

Today is the 16th day of June. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian. It is great to be here with you today as we walk ourselves through the threshold of a new week and it’s all waiting for us like a gift and we get to unwrap it day by day. And one of the ways that we set our days correctly is to allow God’s word to speak to us and into our lives today. And, so, that’s what we’ll do here at the beginning of the week. We’ll read from the Amplified Bible this week and we’re in the book of first Kings. And at this point we are reviewing the different reigns of the different kings. And if you’ll remember from our reading last week, we ended Solomon’s reign, and then the next thing you know we have Israel dividing into two different kingdoms - the northern kingdom of Israel and the southern kingdom of Judah. And now we’re kind of beginning to review the different kings and what they did. And, so, if we hear so-and-so reigned in Israel, that’s the northern kingdom. If we hear so-and-so reigned in Judah, that’s the southern kingdom and that can help us follow what’s going on as we move through the different reigns of the kings and what they stood for and what they did and where they lead the people. So, first Kings chapter 15 verse 25 through 17 verse 24 today.

Commentary:

Alright. So, a couple things as we walk into our new week here in the Old Testament. We met the prophet Elijah who was obviously a very famous and prominent biblical figure. And, so, he has entered the scene and we’re kind of moving rapidly through different king’s reigns, so we’re not necessarily seeing the passage of time, but we’re many generations from Solomon at this point. And, so, King Ahab is in the North, he’s reigning in Israel and he’s married Jezebel who’s also a famous person and we’ll see why soon enough. And now we see that the northern kingdom has its own capital city. Like the northern kingdom of Israel was formed because of a rebellion against Solomon’s son Rehoboam in the South. Remember all of that from last week. And, so, now they’ve constructed their own capital city. It’s called Samaria. So, it is the Jerusalem of the North. In other words, this is a capital city, a defended walled city. The ruins of Samaria still exist today. It was one of the places that we’ve filmed in the Promised Land films. It’s not a place that we go to and tour. It’s a little inaccessible. It’s a place that we’ve filmed in the Promised Land films. And then Elijah shows up on the scene and predicts a famine, which happens, and he is instructed on what to do. And, so, he is sustained and then he ends up in the home of a widow, a Sidonian widow, she’s not a Hebrew at all and yet God sends him to this woman and she has to take an incredible step of faith because this profit shows up, asks for water, asks for a piece of bread, and she’s like, basically, “I can’t give you…I mean I’m making a piece of bread for my son and for myself, and then we’re gonna…then we don’t have any more food so we’re going to starve.” And Elijah is like, “make me a piece of bread too.” And, so, she has to believe like he’s a prophet, she has to step out in faith here and she also has to show hospitality, which is inbred into the culture. And, so, she takes this step of faith and she will be sustained as we’ve already seen. And not to diminish this, but we saw resurrection happen today. Elijah raises the widow’s son after he has died, which obviously makes Elijah one of the prominent and powerful prophets of ancient Israel.

And we get into the New Testament in the book of Acts, and we also have literally earth moving things happening here, like fundamental shifts in the entire way of seeing things is happening in the book of Acts. This began where Peter had this vision of a sheet coming down from heaven with all animals that were considered unclean, and he was instructed to eat them and he’s resisting this. But then these Gentile people show up and he’s told to go. And, so, what is happening here is that peters Hebrew mindset that God, Yahweh, is an exclusive God for the Hebrew people only, this isn’t the case. He has loving everyone in the world and welcoming everyone in the world. This is a big deal. Like, right now, and I’ll say this many times as we continue through the New Testament. most everybody listening to me right now is a Gentile as am I. So, it’s very, very easy to take for granted what is happening here in the New Testament, but it’s so monumental and so controversial and it’s going to cause such upheaval that it’s going to force the early church into its first real crisis. And coming out the other side of that crisis it’s never going to be the same again and it’s the fundamental question. And believe it or not, it’s still a fundamental question that we continue to battle over. Who gets to be in? Who gets to come to Jesus? Who gets to be in? In the ancient early church, many, the majority of the earliest people were Hebrew believers converting to following Jesus, but never converting out of Judaism. They would never do that. But including Gentiles in an exclusive religion, that’s a game changer. And, so, this is a little bit of a heads up. This is the first we’re kind of seeing this but this is gonna run as a sub theme all the way through the rest of the New Testament. It’s fundamental to how the church formed. And, so, we’ll watch that in the coming days and weeks and months.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for bringing us here into this new week and for helping us understand where we are in the stories that we’re reading and how it is that we can look at those stories and understand that really, things haven’t changed all that much in terms of the human heart. We’re wearing different clothes and we have different technology and, yeah, humanity has progressed a couple of thousand years and so we have different ways of thinking about things and we know some things now that weren’t known then, but our hearts and what we’re after and what we seek and why, what motivates us, these are very similar things. And, so, we find ourselves in the stories in the Bible. So, we invite You into this week with all that You will speak. We open ourselves. Come, Holy Spirit we pray in Jesus’ name Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hi Daily Audio Bible, my name is Steph, I’m calling from San Diego. I’m 28 years old and I’m currently in a treatment program right now for veterans at the VA in La Jolla. I was just calling because I wanted to share with everybody that I have nine months…or excuse me…nine days…nine days…just nine days today and I just want to say a prayer for myself and from all my other fellow veterans here who are struggling with addiction and are struggling with mental health and PTSD and a lot of trauma. I’ve been listening to the Daily Audio Bible for a few months now and I really enjoy it. I feel connected to those who call, and I really enjoy praying for others. I really enjoy what God’s doing in my life. You know, it took a lot of darkness, it took a really bad overdose for me to kind of get this help and I’m really grateful for it. So, yeah, so, like I just pray that we all remain strong and I really pray that I get it this time. You know, it’s pretty much a matter of life and death for me. And, so, I’m really invested in us. Thank you to everybody and I just pray for those who are suffering. I pray for those who are hurt and may need help. Thank you guys have a wonderful day from San Diego.

Hey this is Jaime Girl from Arizona and I’m calling, I’m a new listener. I was able to attend the More Gathering and that was just an amazing experience. I just have had a tumultuous year with a lot of adversity and a lot of health problems and I have created chaos in my life. I’m separated from my husband, estranged from my family and my friends and I know that a lot of it is my fault and a lot of it is not and I’m struggling to forgive and forget and I’m at a loss. I have very few people to pray with. And, so, I’m asking my Daily Audio Bible family to stand in the gap with me and pray that I will know which direction to turn, that I will feel Jesus holy presence in my life, that I will, despite having, a __ and a brain injury, that I would use my best judgment and I will follow the path that God has set for me. I’ve been a Christian for 50 years this year and God has never left me despite all of the twists and turns of life and I know that he loves me. And like Job, I stand and say though he slay me yet will I trust him. So, Daily Audio Bible buddies will you pray with me, that God will speak very clearly because my mind is upset and confused? And I just need His guidance and I need to know that it’s His voice and not that of the enemy. And Lord I hope that You would help me, help me find the path that You have for me so that I can be useful to You. Thank you, Daily Audio Bible friends.

Hello Daily Audio Bible family, my name is Fred and my wife, Sonia, and I are having an extremely difficult time in our marriage right now. I was in a dark, low place and the devil preyed on me and has caused significant damage and harm to the relationship with my wife. I love her so much and I ask that everyone please pray to God that she and I are able to heal and that we grow stronger in love together and rekindle what was once there. I love her so very much. She is my best friend. Thank you for your prayers.

Hi DAB family, this is Paula the Child Advocate from Los Angeles area calling. It’s been a while since I called, and I just wanted to thank you all for your prayers after we lost our home to the wildfires back in November. It’s been kind of a struggle off and on, but God has been so good to us and we feel so blessed and we’re just getting through things. So, thank you so much. I wanted to tell you how lovely it is when I listen to the DAB and I hear your voices and I recognize who you are. Even before you say your names I know you are. So, that’s a blessing to me and I’ve been listening to DAB for so many years I’ve kind of lost count. But when I started listening I called in my prayers specifically for my oldest child, Tyler, who was at the time in his early 30s, mid 30s, and he really wanted a wife. And I asked you to pray that God grant him a Christian wife and the prayer was answered. He found a most beautiful Christian woman, about a year and a half ago they were married. He went on a mission trip to Mexico and he met her there and they have been living in Mexico ever since because she cannot get a visa to come to the US. And that’s my prayer. Please, if you will pray for her that her visa will come through. They had been waiting and waiting to actually move from her small town in the __ to Tijuana so they could both find jobs. And my son actually crosses the border to San Diego every day because he has a job in San Diego crossing back to Tijuana to be with his wife. The government won’t tell us whether she is on the list. They just say the paperwork is in, she’s in a list. So, please family, please pray that she’ll get her appointment soon and that they can come back to LA and be with us where Tyler has a job waiting for him in LA as chaplain at a mission downtown on skid row. Thank you family. I pray for you all and I love you all. Bye for now.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Sunday June 16, 2019 (NIV)

1 Kings 15:25-17:24

Nadab, then Baasha, Rules over Israel

25 Now Nadab the son of Jeroboam began to reign over Israel in the second year of Asa king of Judah, and he reigned over Israel for two years. 26 He did evil in the sight of the Lord and walked in the way of his father [Jeroboam] and in his sin [of idolatry], with which he made Israel sin. 27 Baasha the son of Ahijah of the house (tribe) of Issachar conspired against Nadab, and Baasha struck him down at Gibbethon, which belonged to the Philistines, while Nadab and all Israel were laying siege to Gibbethon.

28 So Baasha killed Nadab in the third year of Asa king of Judah, and reigned in his place. 29 As soon as he was king, Baasha struck down all the household of Jeroboam. He did not leave for Jeroboam anyone alive, but he destroyed them in accordance with the word of the Lord which He had spoken through His servant Ahijah the Shilonite—(A) 30 because of the sins committed by Jeroboam and which he made Israel commit, and because he provoked the Lord God of Israel to anger.

31 Now as for the rest of Nadab’s acts and everything that he did, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel?

War with Judah

32 There was war between Asa and Baasha king of Israel all their days.

33 In the third year of Asa king of Judah, Baasha the son of Ahijah became king over all Israel in Tirzah [the capital city], and reigned twenty-four years. 34 He did evil in the sight of the Lord and walked in the way of Jeroboam and in his sin [of idolatry] with which he made Israel sin.

Prophecy against Baasha

16 Now the word of the Lord came to Jehu the son of Hanani against Baasha, saying, “Because I exalted you [Baasha] from the dust and made you leader over My people Israel, and you walked in the way of Jeroboam and made My people Israel sin, provoking Me to anger with their sins [of idol worship], behold, I am going to sweep away Baasha and his household (family), and I will make your house (royal line) like that of Jeroboam the son of Nebat. The dogs will eat anyone belonging to Baasha who dies in the city, and the birds of the sky will eat anyone belonging to him who dies in the field.”

Now as for the rest of the acts of Baasha, what he did and his might, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel?

The Israelite Kings

Baasha slept with his fathers [in death] and was buried in Tirzah. Elah his son became king in his place. Moreover, the word of the Lord came against Baasha and his household through the prophet Jehu the son of Hanani, both for all the evil that Baasha did in the sight of the Lord in provoking Him to anger with the work of his hands (idolatry), in being like the house of Jeroboam, and because he [willingly] destroyed it (the family of Jeroboam).

In the twenty-sixth year of Asa king of Judah, Elah the son of Baasha became king over Israel in Tirzah, and reigned two years. His servant Zimri, commander of half his chariots, conspired against Elah. Now Elah was in Tirzah, getting drunk in the house of Arza, who was in charge of the [king’s] household in Tirzah. 10 Then Zimri came in and struck and killed Elah in the twenty-seventh year of Asa king of Judah, and became king in his place. 11 When he became king, as soon as he sat on his throne, he killed the entire household of Baasha; he did not leave a single male [alive], either of his [a]relatives or his friends.

12 Thus Zimri destroyed the entire household of Baasha, in accordance with the word of the Lord which He spoke against Baasha through Jehu the prophet,(B) 13 for all the sins of Baasha and the sins of Elah his son, which they committed, and made Israel commit, provoking the Lord God of Israel to anger with their idols. 14 Now as for the rest of the acts of Elah and everything that he did, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel?

15 In the twenty-seventh year of Asa king of Judah, Zimri reigned [over Israel] for seven days at Tirzah. Now the troops were camped against Gibbethon, [a city] which belonged to the Philistines, 16 and the people who were camped heard it said, “Zimri has conspired and has also struck down the king.” So all Israel made Omri, the commander of the army, king over Israel that day in the camp. 17 Then Omri went up from Gibbethon, and all Israel with him, and they besieged Tirzah. 18 When Zimri saw that the city was taken, he went into the fortress of the king’s palace; and while inside, he set fire to the king’s palace and died, 19 because of the sins he had committed, doing evil in the sight of the Lord, by walking in the way of Jeroboam, and because of his sin he caused Israel to sin. 20 Now as for the rest of the acts of Zimri, and his [treasonous] conspiracy which he committed, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel?

21 Then the people of Israel were divided in half. Half of the people followed Tibni the son of Ginath, to make him king, and the other half followed Omri. 22 But the people who followed Omri prevailed over the people who followed Tibni the son of Ginath. So Tibni died and Omri became king. 23 In the thirty-first year of Asa king of Judah, Omri became king over Israel and reigned for twelve years. He reigned six years at Tirzah. 24 Omri bought the hill Samaria from Shemer for two talents of silver, and he built a city on the hill [and fortified it], and named the city which he built [b]Samaria, after the owner of the hill, Shemer.

25 But Omri did evil in the sight of the Lord, and acted more wickedly than all who came before him. 26 He walked in all the ways of Jeroboam the son of Nebat and in his sin, which he made Israel commit, provoking the Lord God of Israel, [to anger] with their idols. 27 Now as for the rest of the acts of Omri which he did, and his might which he showed, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel? 28 So Omri slept with his fathers [in death] and was buried in Samaria. Ahab his son became king in his place.

29 Ahab the son of Omri became king over Israel in the thirty-eighth year of Asa king of Judah, and Ahab the son of Omri reigned over Israel in Samaria for twenty-two years. 30 Ahab the son of Omri did evil in the sight of the Lord more than all [the kings] who were before him.

31 It came about, as if it had been a trivial thing for Ahab to walk in the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, that he married [c]Jezebel the daughter of Ethbaal king of the Sidonians, and went and served Baal and worshiped him. 32 So he erected an altar for Baal in the house of Baal which he built in Samaria. 33 Ahab also made the Asherah. Ahab did more to provoke the Lord God of Israel than all the kings of Israel who were before him. 34 In his days, Hiel the Bethelite rebuilt Jericho. He laid its foundations with the loss of Abiram his firstborn, and set up its gates with the loss of his youngest son Segub, in accordance with the word of the Lord, which He spoke through Joshua the son of Nun.(C)

Elijah Predicts Drought

17 Now Elijah the Tishbite, who was of the settlers of Gilead, said to Ahab, “As the Lord, the God of Israel lives, before whom I stand, there shall be neither dew nor rain these years, except by my word.”(D) And the word of the Lord came to him, saying, “Go from here and turn eastward and hide yourself by the brook Cherith, which is east of the Jordan [River]. You shall drink from the brook, and I have commanded the ravens to sustain you there [with food].” So he went and did in accordance with the word of the Lord; he went and lived by the brook Cherith, which is east of the Jordan. And the ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning, and bread and meat in the evening; and he would drink from the brook. It happened after a while that the brook dried up, because there was no rain in the land.

Then the word of the Lord came to him, saying, “Arise, go to [d]Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and stay there. Behold, I have commanded a widow there to provide for you.” 10 So he set out and went to Zarephath, and when he came to the gate of the city, behold, a widow was there gathering sticks [for firewood]. He called out to her and said, “Please bring me a little water in a jar, so that I may drink.” 11 As she was going to get it, he called to her and said, “Please bring me a piece of bread in your hand.” 12 But she said, “As the Lord your God lives, I have no bread, only a handful of flour in the bowl and a little oil in the jar. See, I am gathering a few sticks so that I may go in and bake it for me and my son, that we may eat it [as our last meal] and die.” 13 Elijah said to her, “Do not fear; go and do as you have said. Just make me a little bread from it first and bring it out to me, and afterward you may make one for yourself and for your son. 14 For this is what the Lord God of Israel says: ‘The bowl of flour shall not be exhausted nor shall the jar of oil be empty until the day that the Lord sends rain [again] on the face of the earth.’” 15 She went and did as Elijah said. And she and he and her household ate for many days. 16 The bowl of flour was not exhausted nor did the jar of oil become empty, in accordance with the word of the Lord which He spoke through Elijah.

Elijah Raises the Widow’s Son

17 It happened after these things, that the son of the woman, the mistress of the house, became sick; and his illness was so severe that there was no breath left in him. 18 So she said to Elijah, “What [problem] is there between you and me, O man of God? Have you come to me to bring my sin to mind and to put my son to death?” 19 He said to her, “Give me your son.” Then he took him from her arms and carried him up to the upper room where he was living, and laid him on his own bed. 20 He called to the Lord and said, “O Lord my God, have You brought further tragedy to the widow with whom I am staying, by causing her son to die?” 21 Then he stretched himself out upon the child three times, and called to the Lord and said, “O Lord my God, please let this child’s life return to him.” 22 The Lord heard the voice of Elijah, and the life of the child returned to him and he revived. 23 Elijah took the child and brought him down from the upper room into the [lower part of the] house and gave him to his mother; and Elijah said, “See, your son is alive.” 24 Then the woman said to Elijah, “Now I know that you are a man of God and that the word of the Lord in your mouth is truth.”

Acts 10:24-48

24 On the following day he [and the others] entered Caesarea. Cornelius was waiting for them, and had called together his relatives and close friends. 25 When Peter arrived, Cornelius met him, and fell down at his feet and [a]worshiped him. 26 But Peter raised him up, saying, “Stand up; I too am only a man.” 27 As Peter talked with him, he entered [the house] and found a large group of people assembled. 28 He said to them, “You know that it is unlawful for a Jewish man to associate with or befriend a Gentile, or to visit him; and yet God has shown me that I am not to call anyone common or [ceremonially] unclean. 29 Therefore when I was sent for, I came without raising an objection. So I ask for what reason have you sent for me?”

30 Cornelius said, “Four days ago to this hour, I was praying in my house during the ninth hour (3:00-4:00 p.m.); and a man [dressed] in bright, dazzling clothing suddenly stood before me, 31 and he said, ‘Cornelius, your prayer has been heard, and your acts of charity have been remembered before God [so that He is about to help you]. 32 Therefore send word to Joppa and invite Simon, who is also called Peter, to come to you. He is staying at the house of Simon the tanner by the sea.’ 33 So I sent for you at once, and you have been kind enough to come. Now then, we are all here present before God to listen to everything that you have been instructed by the Lord [to say].”

Gentiles Hear Good News

34 Opening his mouth, Peter said:

“Most certainly I understand now that God is not one to show partiality [to people as though Gentiles were excluded from God’s blessing], 35 but in every nation the person who fears God and does what is right [by seeking Him] is acceptable and welcomed by Him. 36 You know the message which He sent to the sons of Israel, announcing [b]the good news of peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all— 37 you know the things that have taken place throughout Judea, starting in Galilee after the baptism preached by John— 38 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with great power; and He went around doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, because God was with Him.(A) 39 We are [personally] eyewitnesses of everything that He did both in the land of the Jews and in Jerusalem [in particular]. They also put Him to death by hanging Him on a cross; 40 God raised Him [to life] on the third day and caused Him to be plainly seen, 41 not to all the people, but to witnesses who were chosen and designated beforehand by God, that is, to us who ate and drank together with Him after He rose from the dead.(B) 42 He commanded us to preach to the people [both Jew and Gentile], and to solemnly testify that He is the One who has been appointed and ordained by God as Judge of the living and the dead. 43 All the prophets testify about Him, that through His name everyone who believes in Him [whoever trusts in and relies on Him, accepting Him as Savior and Messiah] receives forgiveness of sins.”

44 While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell on all those who were listening to the message [confirming God’s acceptance of Gentiles]. 45 All the circumcised believers who came with Peter were amazed, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles. 46 For they heard them talking in [unknown] tongues (languages) and exalting and magnifying and praising God. Then Peter said, 47 “Can anyone refuse water for these people to be baptized, since they have received the Holy Spirit just as we did?” 48 And he ordered that they be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked him to stay there for a few days.

1 Kings 14:1-15:24, Acts 10:1-23, Psalms 133:1-3, Proverbs 17:7-8

Today is the 15th day of June. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian and it’s great to be here with you today as we reach the conclusion of another week and as we reach dead center of the sixth month of the year. It’s great to be here with you today. So, we’ve been reading from the English Standard Version this week and man we’ve covered some ground and some serious things have happened in both Old and New Testaments this week. And we will pick up the story of the divided kingdom in first Kings today. First Kings chapter 14 verse 1 through 15 verse 24.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word. We thank You for bringing us to the end of another week that we share together, for bringing us here to the middle of this month. Thank You, God for Your faithfulness, and Your kindness, and Your generosity, and Your compassion, and Your empathy, and Your long-suffering. And we could go on and on and on and on and even if we used all of the words that we could possibly think of in the English language to bestow worship upon You in adoration, we would not be scratching the surface because as much as we think we know, we know so little. You are so big, You are so vast, You are so eternal, You are so good. And You have declared us children and given us life. And, so, we are grateful. We honor You and we worship You and we adore You. And as we release this week and it floats away and becomes a part of our history we also look forward to all that You will do in the coming week. Come Holy Spirit we pray. In Jesus’ name we ask. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hi, this is Rita. My sister shared the DAB with me over four years ago. It’s been a totally daily blessing and it really clicks when Brian shares the Scripture audibly. I’m so thankful for it. I need prayer for a biopsy I will have tomorrow. A year ago, a shoulder x-ray showed some spots on my lung. I had three CT scans within that year and one of them, the last one, showed growth on one of the spots. So, tomorrow I’m gonna get a biopsy and I just want to pray that its not cancer or that God will get me through this. This has helped me so much during this time, it’s a paraphrased poem I learned years ago, it’s Proverbs 3:5-6, paraphrased poem. “He does not lead me year-by-year nor even day by day but step-by-step my path unfolds the Lord directs my way. And I am glad that it is so, today’s enough to bear, and when tomorrow comes His grace shall far exceed its care. Why need to worry then or fret, the God who gave His son holds all my moments in His hands and gives them one by one.” I pray for all of you and I love all of you and I just hope that all the prayers are answered. Bye-bye.

Hello. Hi, DABber Drew encouraged us who are desperate to call, so that’s what I’m doing. Since November I’ve been desperate for financial breakthrough. I am a 10 year…I’ve been saved for 10 years and I’m an avid tither and I’m waiting for the Lord to open the floodgates of heaven. I’m a real estate agent and I have a few listings, but I need buyers. I’m down to my last pennies and I need a larger group of believers to pray for me. I believe that with your prayers this breakthrough will occur. I’m also a single woman. So, I ask for your prayers. And DABber Drew, thank you for encouraging me to call. God bless you all.

Hello Daily Audio Bible listeners and family. I just have a praise report. I’m sorry I didn’t call the day my daughter’s wedding. This is God’s Girl from Bakersfield. I’d just like to thank my whole family which is you for praying so hard and diligently. My daughter was able to walk down the aisle with her dad. And, so, it was a glorious day and just God’s presence was through it in every single second from morning till the evening and I just praise you all and praise Jesus and thank you all for just praying for us. I’d like to extend a prayerful heart and deep hug for Toni in Germany. I’m with you sister, it’s really tough sometimes, feeling like you’re not intentional or I forget the word that you used, I had it in my mind…intentional or…I forget what it was, but I just know that you’re not…don’t lose heart girl. I’m with you. I’ll pray with you. Just know that there’s a sister out here in California that loves you and there are so many people that I pray for daily. This podcast has enriched my life. I’ve been listening for 3…almost 4 years now and I just want to tell you how happy I am that I am a part of this family. So, I’m praying for you Tony, I’m with you, and don’t lose heart. Jesus is with us. He left us His Holy Spirit in his place. So, I know that we’re strengthened by that every day. I love you. Thank you all.

Hello Daily Audio Bible, this is my first time calling and I’ve been listening to Daily Audio Bible since about Easter and it’s really done some amazing things in my life but I’m calling because I just have a lot of anxiety about some relationships and some…some work-related things that are going on. And it’s mostly self-inflicted, just letting things condemn me that I know that God doesn’t want to condemn me. But it’s difficult to…I guess…maintain making sure that those don’t condemn me. So, I’d really love some agreement in prayer at that fear of fear and my anxiety has no place in my body or my mind or in my thoughts. So, thanks for your prayers and thank you.

1 Kings 14:1-15:24

Prophecy Against Jeroboam

14 At that time Abijah the son of Jeroboam fell sick. And Jeroboam said to his wife, “Arise, and disguise yourself, that it not be known that you are the wife of Jeroboam, and go to (A)Shiloh. Behold, Ahijah the prophet is there, (B)who said of me that I should be king over this people. (C)Take with you ten loaves, some cakes, and a jar of honey, and go to him. He will tell you what shall happen to the child.”

Jeroboam's wife did so. She arose and went to (D)Shiloh and came to the house of (E)Ahijah. Now (F)Ahijah could not see, for his eyes were dim because of his age. And the Lord said to (G)Ahijah, “Behold, the wife of Jeroboam is coming to inquire of you concerning her son, for he is sick. Thus and thus shall you say to her.”

When she came, she pretended to be another woman. But when (H)Ahijah heard the sound of her feet, as she came in at the door, he said, “Come in, wife of Jeroboam. Why do you pretend to be another? For I am charged with unbearable news for you. Go, tell Jeroboam, ‘Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: (I)“Because I exalted you from among the people and made you leader over my people Israel and (J)tore the kingdom away from the house of David and gave it to you, and yet you have not been (K)like my servant David, who kept my commandments and followed me with all his heart, doing only that which was right in my eyes, but you have done evil above all who were before you and have gone and (L)made for yourself other gods and (M)metal images, provoking me to anger, and (N)have cast me behind your back, 10 therefore behold, I will bring harm upon the house of Jeroboam and (O)will cut off from Jeroboam every male, (P)both bond and free in Israel, and (Q)will burn up the house of Jeroboam, as a man burns up dung until it is all gone. 11 (R)Anyone belonging to Jeroboam who dies in the city the dogs shall eat, and anyone who dies in the open country the birds of the heavens shall eat, for the Lord has spoken it.”’ 12 Arise therefore, go to your house. (S)When your feet enter the city, the child shall die. 13 And all Israel shall mourn for him and bury him, for he only of Jeroboam shall come to the grave, because in him (T)there is found something pleasing to the Lord, the God of Israel, in the house of Jeroboam. 14 (U)Moreover, the Lord will raise up for himself a king over Israel who shall cut off the house of Jeroboam today. And henceforth, 15 the Lord will strike Israel as a reed is shaken in the water, and (V)root up Israel out of (W)this good land that he gave to their fathers and scatter them (X)beyond the Euphrates,[a] because they have made their (Y)Asherim, provoking the Lord to anger. 16 And he will give Israel up because of the sins of Jeroboam, which he sinned and made Israel to sin.”

17 Then Jeroboam's wife arose and departed and came to (Z)Tirzah. And (AA)as she came to the threshold of the house, the child died. 18 And all Israel buried him and mourned for him, (AB)according to the word of the Lord, which he spoke by his servant Ahijah the prophet.

The Death of Jeroboam

19 Now the rest of the acts of Jeroboam, (AC)how he warred and how he reigned, behold, they are written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel. 20 And the time that Jeroboam reigned was twenty-two years. And he slept with his fathers, and Nadab his son reigned in his place.

Rehoboam Reigns in Judah

21 (AD)Now Rehoboam the son of Solomon reigned in Judah. Rehoboam was forty-one years old when he began to reign, and he reigned seventeen years in Jerusalem, (AE)the city that the Lord had chosen out of all the tribes of Israel, to put his name there. (AF)His mother's name was Naamah the Ammonite. 22 (AG)And Judah did what was evil in the sight of the Lord, and they (AH)provoked him to jealousy with their sins that they committed, more than all that their fathers had done. 23 For they also built for themselves (AI)high places (AJ)and pillars and (AK)Asherim on every high hill and (AL)under every green tree, 24 and there were also (AM)male cult prostitutes in the land. They did according to all the abominations of the nations that the Lord drove out before the people of Israel.

25 (AN)In the fifth year of King Rehoboam, Shishak king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem. 26 He took away the treasures of the house of the Lord and the treasures of the king's house. (AO)He took away everything. He also took away all the shields of gold (AP)that Solomon had made, 27 and King Rehoboam made in their place shields of bronze, and committed them to the hands of the officers of the guard, who kept the door of the king's house. 28 And as often as the king went into the house of the Lord, the guard carried them and brought them back to the guardroom.

29 (AQ)Now the rest of the acts of Rehoboam and all that he did, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Judah? 30 (AR)And there was war between Rehoboam and Jeroboam continually. 31 And Rehoboam slept with his fathers and was buried with his fathers in the city of David. (AS)His mother's name was Naamah the Ammonite. And (AT)Abijam his son reigned in his place.

Abijam Reigns in Judah

15 (AU)Now in the eighteenth year of King Jeroboam the son of Nebat, Abijam began to reign over Judah. He reigned for three years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Maacah the daughter of Abishalom. And he walked in all the sins that his father did before him, and (AV)his heart was not wholly true to the Lord his God, as the heart of David his father. Nevertheless, for David's sake the Lord his God gave him (AW)a lamp in Jerusalem, setting up his son after him, and establishing Jerusalem, because (AX)David did what was right in the eyes of the Lord and did not turn aside from anything that he commanded him all the days of his life, (AY)except in the matter of Uriah the Hittite. (AZ)Now there was war between Rehoboam and Jeroboam all the days of his life. (BA)The rest of the acts of Abijam and all that he did, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Judah? (BB)And there was war between Abijam and Jeroboam. (BC)And Abijam slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the city of David. And Asa his son reigned in his place.

Asa Reigns in Judah

In the twentieth year of Jeroboam king of Israel, Asa began to reign over Judah, 10 and he reigned forty-one years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Maacah the daughter of Abishalom. 11 (BD)And Asa did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, as David his father had done. 12 He put away the (BE)male cult prostitutes out of the land and removed (BF)all the idols that his fathers had made. 13 (BG)He also removed Maacah his mother from being queen mother because she had made an abominable image for Asherah. And Asa cut down her image and (BH)burned it at the brook Kidron. 14 (BI)But the high places were not taken away. Nevertheless, (BJ)the heart of Asa was wholly true to the Lord all his days. 15 And (BK)he brought into the house of the Lord the sacred gifts of his father and his own sacred gifts, silver, and gold, and vessels.

16 (BL)And there was war between Asa and Baasha king of Israel all their days. 17 (BM)Baasha king of Israel went up against Judah and (BN)built Ramah, (BO)that he might permit no one to go out or come in to Asa king of Judah. 18 Then Asa took all the silver and the gold (BP)that were left in the treasures of the house of the Lord and the treasures of the king's house and gave them into the hands of his servants. (BQ)And King Asa sent them to Ben-hadad the son of Tabrimmon, the son of Hezion, king of Syria, (BR)who lived in Damascus, saying, 19 “Let there be (BS)a covenant[b] between me and you, as there was between my father and your father. Behold, I am sending to you a present of silver and gold. Go, break your covenant with Baasha king of Israel, that he may withdraw from me.” 20 And Ben-hadad listened to King Asa and sent the commanders of his armies against the cities of Israel and conquered (BT)Ijon, (BU)Dan, (BV)Abel-beth-maacah, and all (BW)Chinneroth, with all the land of Naphtali. 21 And when Baasha heard of it, (BX)he stopped building Ramah, and he lived in (BY)Tirzah. 22 Then King Asa made a proclamation to all Judah, none was exempt, and they carried away the stones of Ramah and its timber, with which Baasha had been building, and with them King Asa built (BZ)Geba of Benjamin and (CA)Mizpah. 23 (CB)Now the rest of all the acts of Asa, all his might, and all that he did, and the cities that he built, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Judah? But in his old age he was diseased in his feet. 24 And Asa slept with his fathers and was buried with his fathers in the city of David his father, and (CC)Jehoshaphat his son reigned in his place.

Acts 10:1-23

Peter and Cornelius

10 At Caesarea there was a man named Cornelius, a centurion of (A)what was known as the Italian Cohort, a devout man (B)who feared God with all his household, gave alms generously to the people, and prayed continually to God. (C)About the ninth hour of the day[a] (D)he saw clearly in a vision (E)an angel of God come in and say to him, “Cornelius.” And he stared at him in terror and said, “What is it, Lord?” And he said to him, “Your prayers and your alms (F)have ascended (G)as a memorial before God. And now send men to Joppa and bring one Simon who is called Peter. He is lodging (H)with one Simon, a tanner, whose house is by the sea.” When the angel who spoke to him had departed, he called two of his servants and a devout soldier from among those who attended him, and having related everything to them, he sent them to Joppa.

Peter's Vision

The next day, as they were on their journey and approaching the city, (I)Peter went up (J)on the housetop about (K)the sixth hour[b] to pray. 10 And he became hungry and wanted something to eat, but while they were preparing it, he fell into (L)a trance 11 and saw (M)the heavens opened and something like a great sheet descending, being let down by its four corners upon the earth. 12 In it were all kinds of animals and reptiles and birds of the air. 13 And there came a voice to him: “Rise, Peter; kill and eat.” 14 But Peter said, “By no means, Lord; (N)for I have never eaten anything that is (O)common or (P)unclean.” 15 And the voice came to him again a second time, (Q)“What God has made clean, do not call common.” 16 This happened three times, and the thing was taken up at once to heaven.

17 Now while Peter was inwardly perplexed as to what (R)the vision that he had seen might mean, behold, (S)the men who were sent by Cornelius, having made inquiry for Simon's house, stood at the gate 18 and called out to ask whether Simon who was called Peter was lodging there. 19 And while Peter was pondering (T)the vision, (U)the Spirit said to him, “Behold, three men are looking for you. 20 Rise and go down and (V)accompany them without hesitation,[c] for I have sent them.” 21 And Peter went down to the men and said, “I am the one you are looking for. What is the reason for your coming?” 22 And they said, “Cornelius, a centurion, an upright and (W)God-fearing man, who is well spoken of by the whole Jewish nation, was directed by (X)a holy angel to send for you to come to his house and (Y)to hear what you have to say.” 23 So he invited them in to be his guests.

The next day he rose and went away with them, and (Z)some of (AA)the brothers from Joppa accompanied him.

Psalm 133

When Brothers Dwell in Unity

A Song of (A)Ascents. Of David.

133 Behold, how good and pleasant it is
when (B)brothers dwell in unity![a]
It is like the precious (C)oil on (D)the head,
running down on the beard,
on the beard of Aaron,
running down on (E)the collar of his robes!
It is like (F)the dew of (G)Hermon,
which falls on (H)the mountains of Zion!
For there the Lord (I)has commanded the blessing,
life forevermore.

1 Kings 12:20-13:34, Acts 9:26-43, Psalms 132:1-18, Proverbs 17:6

Today is the 14th day of June. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian and it’s great to be here with you as we’re moving into the end of the week now, another one of our weeks moving toward its conclusion. And we’re continuing to move forward. As we mentioned yesterday, we’re kinda headed into some new territory now because in the Old Testament the kingdom of Israel is not just one united group of people made up of 12 tribes. They’ve split into two different kingdoms, the northern kingdom of Israel in the southern kingdom of Judah. And in the book of Acts, this man, this Pharisee, this radical Pharisee named Saul has had a radical encounter with Jesus and he is becoming the apostle Paul. So, we’ll pick up with those stories. We’re reading from the English Standard Version this week. First Kings chapter 12 verse 20 through 13 verse 34.

Commentary:

Okay. So, in first kings we…I mean…it was the day before yesterday that we were reading of the apex. We were under Solomon’s reign and peace and prosperity unlike anything else the world had ever seen was what we are reading about and here we are two days later. The kingdom has split into two. The northern kingdom is being led by its King Jeroboam into full-blown idolatry. And, yeah, that’s just how fast things can turn and that’s how fast things can turn in our lives sometimes. I mean it could be the day before yesterday that we were rescued by God worshiping in His presence and we can find ourselves a couple days later, in the depths again. So, this King, Jeroboam…now it’s Rehoboam and Jeroboam and it’s easy to like get them kinda mixed up. Rehoboam is the king of Judah, and he reigns in Jerusalem and his father was King Solomon. Jeroboam is the King of the North, the 10 tribes of the north, the kingdom of Israel, and he became king in a…well…in a prophetic way, and also in a practical way. He had been in charge of the forced labor for Solomon. So, when the people came and asked Rehoboam to lighten the load and he wouldn’t lighten the load…well…Jeroboam was there, and he understood the workload. So, he’s the king, but he knows that if the people continue to go to Jerusalem to worship God, it won’t be long before their hearts are turned against Jeroboam and they’ll want to reunite. So, he’s got borders. The kingdom of Israel in ancient Israel was from Dan to Beersheba. Jeroboam’s kingdom was from Dan to Bethel, just a bit north of Jerusalem. And, so, that’s where he built these temples for these calves, one in Dan in the north and one in Bethel on his southern border. And there’s the story that we read of today of a prophet being sent to Bethel to curse the altar. And he does curse the altar and its dramatic, right? The Kings got his arm frozen in place and this…the whole thing. Now, the King, once he’s restored, and this is King Jeroboam that we’re talking about, once his arm is restored he wants to take the prophet home, he wants to reward the prophet, he wants to treat him well and the prophet tells him he can do it, “like…even if you give me half of your kingdom I wouldn’t do it. The Lord gave me specific instructions. Do not eat, do not drink, do not go back the way you came.” And, so, he says this to the Kings face and he leaves and he’s on his way home. So, final stretch of the assignment. Another profit hears about the incident, the things that had taken place, and he goes after this guy and he tells this guy, “come home with me” and the prophet repeats everything, “I can’t. I can’t eat or drink. I can’t go back the same way that I came.” And this this older prophet says, but an angel told me that you could, like  God has given me word that you can come home with me. And, so, he does, disobeying God in the process and he loses his life for that. We can look at this story and go like, “what's…what’s in there for me? It’s just kinda weird. Like why? What’s with the importance of this?” This profit who had cursed the altar was willing to obey God in the face of the king of Israel and he departed. This other man, this other prophet comes to this guy and basically says, “God told me to tell you that you can do this.” And, so, the man disobeyed God completely. He ate, he drank, and he did not go back home the way he came and finish the mission. Friends, I get told God told me to tell you, often, very often in my line of work. I’m also…I grew up in a pastor’s home…so I’ve seen this kind of stuff my whole life but this one Scripture, this one little story in the book of first Kings really gives us some poignant things to think about. If God speaks to you specific instructions you should obey those instructions no matter what anybody else tells you that God told them to tell you because…because at the end of the day we are responsible to collaborate and be in obedience to the will of God in our lives. And, so, if God speaks something and we know, we sense, we understand, the Holy Spirit is leading and then somebody else comes to us at some later time, whether that be, you know, 15 seconds later or whether that be six months later or whether that be six years later and they come and say God told me to tell you, then the first thing that we should do is ask God instead of just trusting what anyone else might tell us. According to the Scriptures in this story, the prophet lied. So, kind of the moral of the story is, deferring blame isn’t gonna work with God. And we have kind of a nasty little habit of trying to defer, right? Everything that happens to us is somebody else’s fault, but until we can actually own our own lives, our own thoughts, and words, and deeds, we’re not really going anywhere. And until we can own our own relationships how are they supposed to grow. And if we can’t own our own relationship with God and we’re simply trying to run around looking for some sort of oracle, like for somebody who must hear from God, can tell me what God is saying, rather than pressing in into a personal, intimate relationship with God, then we’re not gonna get that far. It’s only going to ever be frustrating. So, let’s take a lesson. In fact, let’s take two lessons from what we read today. Let’s observe just how fast we went from a united kingdom completely prosperous to a divided kingdom and idolatry and understand that it can happen that fast for us especially…especially if we are not owning our own relationship with God and obeying what He says to do regardless.

Prayer:

Father, we invite You into that, into to all of that because we can find ourselves very easily in all of that. We have run around to everybody to everybody we can think of trying to find out what it is You might be doing in our lives and in no way are we trying to denigrate community, You have knit us together and we need each other, and we need each other continually, yet our communities are not our God, You are our God and when we only use our community experience to try to figure out what You may be saying then we’re missing You. So, come Holy Spirit into this we pray. In the name of Jesus, we ask. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Yes. Good day DABbers it’s __ here from Brisbane Australia. I’d just…would really love your prayers. We’re going through, my family and I, are going through some financial hardship and it’s really coming to a halt now and we stand to lose the house and sell everything and start afresh. So, I really value your prayers. I’ve been a listener for…this is my 10th year…and even though I don’t call regularly I do…I do pray along with you and for you. I love you guys and thanks for your prayers. God, bless.

Good morning family this is, __ Michelle from Central Florida. Today is June the 11th, 2019 of course and I want to send my love to all of you and let you know I pray with you for your requests and stand with you and just appreciate all of you and appreciate Brian and Jill and China and all the people that make this podcast possible. It’s so easy for us to get swept into our day with all the things to do we have and the busyness of life. So, let’s just stop, take a moment to focus on the One who really matters. Heavenly Father, You are so good, You’re a good, good Father and we are loved, beloved treasured to children, that’s who we are, and we thank You God for Your mercies and Your kindness, which endures forever through generations. And Lord I pray for protection, traveling mercies over each of our family members today, not only our DAB family members but our children, and grandchildren, and relatives. Father, I just thank You God, just thank You so much for everything You’ve done for us. Everything You’re doing in us and everything that You’re doing through us. God, help us to be still and hear Your voice and I thank You God that You will create in us the desire and give us the power to do what pleases You as Your Word promises. Help our mind be stayed on You and therefore we will have the perfect peace which You promise and Your Word. God, we cast our cares upon You because You care for us and we’re not gonna pick them up again but if we’re tempted we’ll just be reminded…Holy Spirit, remind us to continue to cast our care and when the enemy tempts us to hold…

Hi, this call is for Toni from Germany. I heard your call at the end of the June 11th podcast, that’s when it played. And I just want to tell you that I’ll be praying for you Toni and I totally hear what you’re saying. I also have not been maintaining. So, I know what you mean. I even went to the More conference and I felt like God told me that I don’t need to work myself to death, that that is not his expectation but, yeah, I haven’t found a way to really apply that either. So, I’m working so much that I’m not spending enough time with my family and then on the weekend I’m cramming in all the things that I didn’t get done during the week at home and then I’m not as patient, not spending time with my aging parents, not exercising, and not sleeping enough. So, definitely not maintaining. So, I hear you and I will pray for you. It’s difficult, but I know that we can do this with God’s help. So, I’m thinking of you and it will be okay. Bye.

Hi everybody it’s Margo from Australia. I phoned yesterday, and my call got cut off so I’m not sure that it will get played but if I repeat myself please forgive me. Guess where I am? I’m in Liberia, finally. I’m so happy to be here. Just wanted to check in with you guys, let you know that we’re doing well, we are in good health. First impressions of Liberia, it’s very hot and humid, very rainy at the moment, very green. I think I’m gonna like it here. Our compound is quite near the beach and it’s very peaceful. So, I think that will be really good for us, very therapeutic. I think it is going to be some really, really hard things here and some really really good things here. So, please keep us in your prayers. I’m so happy to be following God’s call for my life. He’s just started something amazing here, I just know it. Our shipping of our household goods from Australia…well…actually…it’s still in Australia. I think I did already ask you to pray but please keep praying because it would be so nice to be able to just set up at home with my own things. There’s been a lot of problems and it hasn’t even left Australia…been there for five months. Anyway, just wanted to check in, tell you guys I love you. I think I’ve worked out how I can phone you from here. Hopefully this call quality is good. Still listening every day and praying. Love you all. Bye.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Friday June 14, 2019 (NIV)

1 Kings 12:20-13:34

20 And when all Israel heard that Jeroboam had returned, they sent and called him to the assembly and made him king over all Israel. There was none that followed the house of David but (A)the tribe of Judah only.

21 (B)When Rehoboam came to Jerusalem, he assembled all the house of Judah and the tribe of Benjamin, 180,000 chosen warriors, to fight against the house of Israel, to restore the kingdom to Rehoboam the son of Solomon. 22 But the word of God came to (C)Shemaiah the man of God: 23 “Say to Rehoboam the son of Solomon, king of Judah, and to all the house of Judah and Benjamin, and to the (D)rest of the people, 24 ‘Thus says the Lord, You shall not go up or fight against your relatives the people of Israel. Every man return to his home, (E)for this thing is from me.’” So they listened to the word of the Lord and went home again, according to the word of the Lord.

Jeroboam's Golden Calves

25 Then Jeroboam (F)built Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim and lived there. And he went out from there and (G)built Penuel. 26 And Jeroboam said in his heart, “Now the kingdom will turn back to the house of David. 27 If this people (H)go up to offer sacrifices in the temple of the Lord at Jerusalem, then the heart of this people will turn again to their lord, to Rehoboam king of Judah, and they will kill me and return to Rehoboam king of Judah.” 28 So the king took counsel and (I)made two calves of gold. And he said to the people, “You have gone up to Jerusalem long enough. (J)Behold your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt.” 29 And he set one in Bethel, and the other he put in Dan. 30 Then (K)this thing became a sin, for the people went as far as Dan to be before one.[a] 31 He also made (L)temples on high places and (M)appointed priests from among all the people, who were not of the Levites. 32 And Jeroboam appointed a feast on the fifteenth day of the eighth month like (N)the feast that was in Judah, and he offered sacrifices on the altar. So he did in Bethel, sacrificing to the calves that he made. And he placed in Bethel (O)the priests of the high places that he had made. 33 He went up to the altar that he had made in Bethel on the fifteenth day in the eighth month, in the month that he had devised from his own heart. And he instituted a feast for the people of Israel and went up to the altar (P)to make offerings.

A Man of God Confronts Jeroboam

13 And behold, (Q)a man of God came out of Judah by the word of the Lord to Bethel. Jeroboam was standing by the altar (R)to make offerings. (S)And the man cried against the altar by the word of the Lord and said, “O altar, altar, thus says the Lord: ‘Behold, a son shall be born to the house of David, (T)Josiah by name, and he shall sacrifice on you the priests of the high places who make offerings on you, and human bones shall be burned on you.’” And he gave (U)a sign the same day, saying, “This is the sign that the Lord has spoken: ‘Behold, the altar shall be torn down, and the ashes that are on it shall be poured out.’” And when the king heard the saying of the man of God, which he cried against the altar at Bethel, Jeroboam stretched out his hand from the altar, saying, “Seize him.” And his hand, which he stretched out against him, dried up, so that he could not draw it back to himself. The altar also was torn down, and the ashes poured out from the altar, according to the sign that the man of God had given by the word of the Lord. And the king said to the man of God, (V)“Entreat now the favor of the Lord your God, and pray for me, that my hand may be restored to me.” And the man of God entreated the Lord, and the king's hand was restored to him and became as it was before. And the king said to the man of God, “Come home with me, and refresh yourself, and (W)I will give you a reward.” And the man of God said to the king, (X)“If you give me half your house, (Y)I will not go in with you. And I will not eat bread or drink water in this place, for so was it commanded me by the word of the Lord, saying, ‘You shall neither eat bread nor drink water nor return by the way that you came.’” 10 So he went another way and did not return by the way that he came to Bethel.

The Prophet's Disobedience

11 Now (Z)an old prophet lived in Bethel. And his sons[b] came and told him all that the man of God had done that day in Bethel. They also told to their father the words that he had spoken to the king. 12 And their father said to them, “Which way did he go?” And his sons showed him the way that the man of God who came from Judah had gone. 13 And he said to his sons, “Saddle the donkey for me.” So they saddled the donkey for him and he mounted it. 14 And he went after the man of God and found him sitting under an oak. And he said to him, “Are you the man of God who came from Judah?” And he said, “I am.” 15 Then he said to him, “Come home with me and eat bread.” 16 And he said, (AA)“I may not return with you, or go in with you, neither will I eat bread nor drink water with you in this place, 17 for it was said to me (AB)by the word of the Lord, ‘You shall neither eat bread nor drink water there, nor return by the way that you came.’” 18 And he said to him, “I also am a prophet as you are, and an angel spoke to me by the word of the Lord, saying, ‘Bring him back with you into your house that he may eat bread and drink water.’” But he lied to him. 19 So he went back with him and ate bread in his house and drank water.

20 And as they sat at the table, the word of the Lord came to the prophet who had brought him back. 21 And he cried to the man of God who came from Judah, “Thus says the Lord, ‘Because you have disobeyed the word of the Lord and have not kept the command that the Lord your God commanded you, 22 but have come back and have eaten bread and drunk water in the place of which he said to you, “Eat no bread and drink no water,” your body shall not come to the tomb of your fathers.’” 23 And after he had eaten bread and drunk, he saddled the donkey for the prophet whom he had brought back. 24 And as he went away (AC)a lion met him on the road and killed him. And his body was thrown in the road, and the donkey stood beside it; the lion also stood beside the body. 25 And behold, men passed by and saw the body thrown in the road and the lion standing by the body. And they came and told it in the city where (AD)the old prophet lived.

26 And when the prophet who had brought him back from the way heard of it, he said, “It is the man of God who disobeyed the word of the Lord; therefore the Lord has given him to the lion, which has torn him and killed him, according to the word that the Lord spoke to him.” 27 And he said to his sons, “Saddle the donkey for me.” And they saddled it. 28 And he went and found his body thrown in the road, and the donkey and the lion standing beside the body. The lion had not eaten the body or torn the donkey. 29 And the prophet took up the body of the man of God and laid it on the donkey and brought it back to the city[c] to mourn and to bury him. 30 And he laid the body in his own grave. And they mourned over him, saying, (AE)“Alas, my brother!” 31 And after he had buried him, he said to his sons, “When I die, bury me in the grave in which the man of God is buried; (AF)lay my bones beside his bones. 32 (AG)For the saying that he called out by the word of the Lord against the altar in Bethel and against (AH)all the houses of the high places that are in the cities of (AI)Samaria shall surely come to pass.”

33 After this thing Jeroboam did not turn from his evil way, but made priests for the high places again from among all the people. Any who would, he ordained to be priests of the high places. 34 (AJ)And this thing became sin to the house of Jeroboam, (AK)so as to cut it off and to destroy it from the face of the earth.

Acts 9:26-43

Saul in Jerusalem

26 And (A)when he had come to Jerusalem, he attempted to join the disciples. And they were all afraid of him, for they did not believe that he was a disciple. 27 But (B)Barnabas took him and (C)brought him to the apostles and declared to them (D)how on the road he had seen the Lord, who spoke to him, and (E)how at Damascus he had (F)preached boldly in the name of Jesus. 28 So he went (G)in and out among them at Jerusalem, preaching boldly in the name of the Lord. 29 And he spoke and disputed against (H)the Hellenists.[a] But (I)they were seeking to kill him. 30 And when (J)the brothers learned this, they brought him down to Caesarea and sent him off (K)to Tarsus.

31 So (L)the church throughout all Judea and Galilee and Samaria had peace and was being built up. And (M)walking in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, (N)it multiplied.

The Healing of Aeneas

32 Now (O)as Peter went here and there among them all, he came down also to the saints who lived at Lydda. 33 There he found a man named Aeneas, bedridden for eight years, who was paralyzed. 34 And Peter said to him, “Aeneas, (P)Jesus Christ heals you; rise and make your bed.” And immediately he rose. 35 (Q)And all the residents of Lydda and (R)Sharon saw him, and (S)they turned to the Lord.

Dorcas Restored to Life

36 Now there was in (T)Joppa a disciple named Tabitha, which, translated, means Dorcas.[b] She was full of (U)good works and acts of charity. 37 In those days she became ill and died, and when they had washed her, they laid her in (V)an upper room. 38 Since Lydda was near Joppa, the disciples, hearing that Peter was there, sent two men to him, urging him, (W)“Please come to us without delay.” 39 So Peter rose and went with them. And when he arrived, they took him to (X)the upper room. All the widows stood beside him weeping and showing tunics[c] and other garments that Dorcas made while she was with them. 40 But Peter (Y)put them all outside, and (Z)knelt down and prayed; and turning to the body (AA)he said, “Tabitha, arise.” And she opened her eyes, and when she saw Peter she sat up. 41 And he gave her his hand and raised her up. Then, calling the saints and widows, he presented her alive. 42 And it became known throughout all Joppa, and (AB)many believed in the Lord. 43 And he stayed in Joppa for many days (AC)with one Simon, a tanner.

Psalm 132

The Lord Has Chosen Zion

A Song of (A)Ascents.

132 Remember, O Lord, in David's favor,
all (B)the hardships he endured,
how he swore to the Lord
and (C)vowed to (D)the Mighty One of Jacob,
“I will not enter my house
or get into my bed,
I will not (E)give sleep to my eyes
or slumber to my eyelids,
until I (F)find a place for the Lord,
a dwelling place for (G)the Mighty One of Jacob.”

Behold, we heard of it in (H)Ephrathah;
we found it in (I)the fields of Jaar.
“Let us go to his dwelling place;
let us (J)worship at his (K)footstool!”

(L)Arise, O Lord, and go to your (M)resting place,
you and the ark of your (N)might.
Let your (O)priests be (P)clothed with righteousness,
and let your (Q)saints shout for joy.
10 For the sake of your servant David,
(R)do not turn away the face of (S)your anointed one.

11 (T)The Lord swore to David a sure oath
(U)from which he will not turn back:
(V)“One of the sons of your body[a]
I will set on your throne.
12 If your sons keep my covenant
and my testimonies that I shall teach them,
their sons also forever
shall (W)sit on your throne.”

13 For the Lord has (X)chosen Zion;
he has (Y)desired it for his dwelling place:
14 “This is my (Z)resting place forever;
here I will (AA)dwell, for I have desired it.
15 I will abundantly (AB)bless her provisions;
I will (AC)satisfy her poor with bread.
16 Her (AD)priests I will clothe with salvation,
and her (AE)saints will shout for joy.
17 There I will make (AF)a horn to sprout for David;
I have prepared (AG)a lamp for (AH)my anointed.
18 His enemies I will (AI)clothe with shame,
but on him his crown will shine.”

1 Kings 11:1-12:19, Acts 9:1-25, Psalms 131:1-3, Proverbs 17:4-5

Today is the 13th day of June. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian. It is pleasure, always, it's…actually it is…it’s a pleasure and a joy to be here with you today and read God’s word out loud and come around the global campfire together in community and enjoy fellowship and know that we’re not in this alone. That’s a joy and a pleasure. So, we move toward the back part of the week now, we remember that we reached a point that we were calling the apex, sort of the moment in ancient Israel under King Solomon’s rule where ancient Israel reached its finest hour and where people from all over the world, dignitaries, royals from all over the world were coming to see what was going on, where ancient Israel was in its finest hour and shining brightly. And, so, the story has to continue, and we will continue with that story today. We’re reading from the English Standard Version this week. First Kings chapter 11 verse 1 through 12 verse 19.

Commentary:

Okay. So, pretty big day actually, in terms of transition, here in the Scriptures in both Old and New Testaments. The things that happened today, we read through their stories and we may have even heard these stories before, but the repercussions of the things that happened today in the Old and the New Testament change the story profoundly. So, in the Old Testament in the book of first Kings, what has happened here is that King Solomon has brought the people to their pinnacle to a wonderful place of peace and prosperity for sure, but they began to slide down the other side. And, so, by the time we finished our reading today there isn’t an ancient Israel as we have known it. So, Rehoboam has had a facedown with Jeroboam, Rehoboam being the son of King Solomon and the rightful heir to the throne. Because of his promise that he’s actually going to make life more difficult for his people, for his subjects, 10 of the tribes abandon Rehoboam and make Jeroboam their leader, their king. The house of David is no longer king of Israel. That is over. These 10 tribes in the North who are following Jeroboam and they will be known as the tribes of Israel. But there are 10 of them. Rehoboam will only be in charge of the holy city of Jerusalem and the tribe of Judah. And, so, what we have here now is the disintegration of ancient Israel as we have known it, right? The sons of Jacob, whose name was turned Israel, his children, the children of Israel who all grew up to be their own tribes, they’re not in unity anymore, they have divided and we now, from this point forward, until they all disappear, have the northern kingdom of Israel and the southern kingdom of Judah. Kind of a big deal. Here in the United States we had a Civil War. It’s part of our national history. It was a long, long time ago - the North versus the South. The repercussions of that, the reverberations of that, they can still be found. That’s kind of what we have shaping up here. We have the northern and the southern kingdoms now and they have two different kings. So, where is this story gonna take us. And that will…that will reveal itself, day by day, step-by-step as we continue to journey forward.

Then, in the book of Acts, there’s been this Pharisee, a radical Pharisee named Saul, who has absolutely been on a rampage trying to stamp out what has become known as the Way. And this is what the faith in Jesus was originally called. The term Christian, at this point in the book of Acts, the term Christian hadn’t been coined…no one had been called a Christian, no one was a Christian yet because that term hadn’t been invented yet, but this was…the teachings of Jesus were collectively being called the Way and, of course, the name of Jesus was being proclaimed and all of those in authority at the top were trying to stamp that out. Saul, being a radical Pharisee and just truly trying to live as righteous as he could, really felt like he was doing God’s will by trying to eradicate the Way. And, so, you know, he caused mayhem in Jerusalem and he’s got a letter and he’s on his way to Damascus to kinda do the same thing when he encounters Jesus on the road to Damascus and we know the story. It’s pretty famous. It’s just important to realize that this changes everything. Saul, this radical Pharisee who will be renamed Paul the apostle of Jesus Christ will write to two thirds of the new Testament. So, his conversion experience radically alters the story all together that we are in. Jesus has come for Paul and as we will see throughout most of the rest of the year, we will begin to realize the implications of that meeting and that encounter.

Prayer:

Father we thank You for Your word. And as we just take a moment to point out and pay attention to how radically the story has shifted in both Old and New Testaments today that You would also shift our hearts to receive and understand and interpret and apply where we’re going in the stories and in this year. We thank You for Your faithfulness to us. We thank You for the way that Your word…it just touches everything about us. It just doesn’t do it all in one day. As we invest into the rhythm of our lives and allow Your word to be involved in our lives over the course of a year everything has…everything has been touched and we’ve been given choices. And some of those choices are good ones and some of those choices we make incorrectly but we are can continually being refined because Your word continually brings up things that we can’t hide or run away from. And, so, as we begin to turn the page and move into some new territory in the stories that we’ve been following since the beginning of the year, we invite Your Holy Spirit to lead us forward into all truth and we yray this in the name of Jesus. Amen.

1 Kings 11:1-12:19

Solomon Turns from the Lord

11 Now (A)King Solomon loved many foreign women, along with the daughter of Pharaoh: Moabite, Ammonite, Edomite, Sidonian, and Hittite women, from the nations concerning which the Lord had said to the people of Israel, (B)“You shall not enter into marriage with them, neither shall they with you, for surely they will turn away your heart after their gods.” Solomon clung to these in love. He had 700 wives, who were princesses, and 300 concubines. And his wives turned away his heart. For when Solomon was old his wives turned away his heart after other gods, and (C)his heart was not wholly true to the Lord his God, (D)as was the heart of David his father. For Solomon went after (E)Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, and after (F)Milcom the abomination of the Ammonites. So Solomon did what was evil in the sight of the Lord and did not wholly follow the Lord, as David his father had done. Then Solomon built a high place for (G)Chemosh the abomination of Moab, and for (H)Molech the abomination of the Ammonites, on the mountain east of Jerusalem. And so he did for all his foreign wives, who made offerings and sacrificed to their gods.

The Lord Raises Adversaries

And the Lord was angry with Solomon, because (I)his heart had turned away from the Lord, the God of Israel, (J)who had appeared to him twice 10 and (K)had commanded him concerning this thing, that he should not go after other gods. But he did not keep what the Lord commanded. 11 Therefore the Lord said to Solomon, “Since this has been your practice and you have not kept my covenant and my statutes that I have commanded you, (L)I will surely tear the kingdom from you and will give it to your servant. 12 Yet for the sake of David your father I will not do it in your days, but I will tear it out of the hand of your son. 13 However, (M)I will not tear away all the kingdom, but (N)I will give one tribe to your son, for the sake of David my servant and for the sake of Jerusalem (O)that I have chosen.”

14 And the Lord raised up an adversary against Solomon, Hadad the Edomite. He was of the royal house in Edom. 15 For (P)when David was in Edom, and Joab the commander of the army went up to bury the slain, he struck down every male in Edom 16 (for Joab and all Israel remained there six months, until he had cut off every male in Edom). 17 But Hadad fled to Egypt, together with certain Edomites of his father's servants, Hadad still being a little child. 18 They set out from Midian and came to (Q)Paran and took men with them from Paran and came to Egypt, to Pharaoh king of Egypt, who gave him a house and assigned him an allowance of food and gave him land. 19 And Hadad found great favor in the sight of Pharaoh, so that he gave him in marriage the sister of his own wife, the sister of Tahpenes the queen. 20 And the sister of Tahpenes bore him Genubath his son, whom Tahpenes weaned in Pharaoh's house. And Genubath was in Pharaoh's house among the sons of Pharaoh. 21 But when Hadad heard in Egypt (R)that David slept with his fathers and that Joab the commander of the army was dead, Hadad said to Pharaoh, “Let me depart, that I may go to my own country.” 22 But Pharaoh said to him, “What have you lacked with me that you are now seeking to go to your own country?” And he said to him, “Only let me depart.”

23 God also raised up as an adversary to him, Rezon the son of Eliada, who had fled from his master (S)Hadadezer king of Zobah. 24 And he gathered men about him and became leader of a marauding band, (T)after the killing by David. And they went to Damascus and lived there and made him king in Damascus. 25 He was an adversary of Israel all the days of Solomon, doing harm as Hadad did. And he loathed Israel and reigned over Syria.

26 (U)Jeroboam the son of Nebat, (V)an Ephraimite of Zeredah, a servant of Solomon, whose mother's name was Zeruah, a widow, also (W)lifted up his hand against the king. 27 And this was the reason why he lifted up his hand against the king. (X)Solomon built the Millo, and closed up the breach of the city of David his father. 28 The man Jeroboam was very able, and when Solomon saw that the young man was industrious he gave him charge over all the forced labor of the house of Joseph. 29 And at that time, when Jeroboam went out of Jerusalem, the prophet (Y)Ahijah the Shilonite found him on the road. Now Ahijah had dressed himself in a new garment, and the two of them were alone in the open country. 30 Then Ahijah laid hold of the new garment that was on him, (Z)and tore it into twelve pieces. 31 And he said to Jeroboam, “Take for yourself ten pieces, for thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, ‘Behold, (AA)I am about to tear the kingdom from the hand of Solomon and will give you ten tribes 32 (but (AB)he shall have one tribe, for the sake of my servant David and for the sake of Jerusalem, (AC)the city that I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel), 33 because they have[a] forsaken me (AD)and worshiped Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, Chemosh the god of Moab, and Milcom the god of the Ammonites, and they have not walked in my ways, doing what is right in my sight and keeping my statutes and my rules, as David his father did. 34 Nevertheless, I will not take the whole kingdom out of his hand, but I will make him ruler all the days of his life, for the sake of David my servant whom I chose, who kept my commandments and my statutes. 35 (AE)But I will take the kingdom out of his son's hand and will give it to you, ten tribes. 36 Yet to his son (AF)I will give one tribe, that David my servant may always have (AG)a lamp before me in Jerusalem, (AH)the city where I have chosen to put my name. 37 And I will take you, and you shall reign over all that your soul desires, and you shall be king over Israel. 38 And if you will listen to all that I command you, and will walk in my ways, and do what is right in my eyes by keeping my statutes and my commandments, as David my servant did, (AI)I will be with you and (AJ)will build you a sure house, as I built for David, and I will give Israel to you. 39 And I will afflict the offspring of David because of this, but not forever.’” 40 Solomon sought therefore to kill Jeroboam. But Jeroboam arose and fled into Egypt, to (AK)Shishak king of Egypt, and was in Egypt until the death of Solomon.

41 (AL)Now the rest of the acts of Solomon, and all that he did, and his wisdom, are they not written in the Book of the Acts of Solomon? 42 And the time that Solomon reigned in Jerusalem over all Israel was forty years. 43 And Solomon (AM)slept with his fathers and was buried in the city of David his father. And (AN)Rehoboam his son reigned in his place.

Rehoboam's Folly

12 (AO)Rehoboam went to (AP)Shechem, for all Israel had come to Shechem to make him king. And as soon as (AQ)Jeroboam the son of Nebat heard of it (for (AR)he was still in Egypt, where he had fled from King Solomon), then Jeroboam returned from[b] Egypt. And they sent and called him, and Jeroboam and all the assembly of Israel came and said to Rehoboam, (AS)“Your father made our yoke heavy. Now therefore lighten the hard service of your father and his heavy yoke on us, and we will serve you.” He said to them, (AT)“Go away for three days, then come again to me.” So the people went away.

Then King Rehoboam took counsel with the old men, who had stood before Solomon his father while he was yet alive, saying, “How do you advise me to answer this people?” And they said to him, “If you will be a servant to this people today and serve them, and speak good words to them when you answer them, then they will be your servants forever.” But he abandoned the counsel that the old men gave him and took counsel with the young men who had grown up with him and stood before him. And he said to them, “What do you advise that we answer this people who have said to me, ‘Lighten the yoke that your father put on us’?” 10 And the young men who had grown up with him said to him, “Thus shall you speak to this people who said to you, ‘Your father made our yoke heavy, but you lighten it for us,’ thus shall you say to them, ‘My little finger is thicker than my father's thighs. 11 And now, whereas (AU)my father laid on you a heavy yoke, I will add to your yoke. My father disciplined you with whips, but I will discipline you with scorpions.’”

12 So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam the third day, as the king said, (AV)“Come to me again the third day.” 13 And the king answered the people harshly, and forsaking the counsel that the old men had given him, 14 he spoke to them according to the counsel of the young men, saying, (AW)“My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add to your yoke. My father disciplined you with whips, but I will discipline you with scorpions.” 15 So the king did not listen to the people, for (AX)it was a turn of affairs brought about by the Lord that he might fulfill his word, which (AY)the Lord spoke by Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat.

The Kingdom Divided

16 And when all Israel saw that the king did not listen to them, the people answered the king, “What portion do we have in David? We have no inheritance in the son of Jesse. (AZ)To your tents, O Israel! Look now to your own house, David.” So Israel went to their tents. 17 But Rehoboam reigned over (BA)the people of Israel who lived in the cities of Judah. 18 Then King Rehoboam sent (BB)Adoram, who was taskmaster over the forced labor, and all Israel stoned him to death with stones. And King Rehoboam hurried to mount his chariot to flee to Jerusalem. 19 (BC)So Israel has been in rebellion against the house of David to this day.

Acts 9:1-25

The Conversion of Saul

But Saul, (A)still (B)breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord, went to (C)the high priest and asked him for letters (D)to the synagogues at Damascus, so that if he found any belonging to (E)the Way, men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem. (F)Now as he went on his way, he approached Damascus, and suddenly a light from heaven shone around him. And falling to the ground, he heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting (G)me?” And he said, “Who are you, Lord?” And he said, “I am Jesus, (H)whom you are persecuting. But (I)rise and enter the city, and you will be told (J)what you are to do.” (K)The men who were traveling with him stood speechless, (L)hearing the voice but seeing no one. Saul rose from the ground, and although his eyes were opened, (M)he saw nothing. So they led him by the hand and brought him into Damascus. And for three days he was without sight, and neither ate nor drank.

10 Now there was a disciple at Damascus named (N)Ananias. The Lord said to him in a vision, “Ananias.” And he said, (O)“Here I am, Lord.” 11 And the Lord said to him, “Rise and go to the street called Straight, and at the house of Judas look for a man (P)of Tarsus named Saul, for behold, he is praying, 12 and he has seen in a vision a man named Ananias come in and (Q)lay his hands on him so that he might regain his sight.” 13 But Ananias answered, “Lord, I have heard from many about this man, (R)how much evil he has done to (S)your (T)saints at Jerusalem. 14 And here he has authority from (U)the chief priests to bind all who (V)call on your name.” 15 But the Lord said to him, “Go, for (W)he is a chosen instrument of mine to carry my name (X)before the Gentiles and (Y)kings and the children of Israel. 16 For (Z)I will show him how much (AA)he must suffer (AB)for the sake of my name.” 17 So (AC)Ananias departed and entered the house. And (AD)laying his hands on him he said, “Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus who appeared to you on the road by which you came has sent me so that you may regain your sight and (AE)be filled with the Holy Spirit.” 18 And immediately something like scales fell from his eyes, and (AF)he regained his sight. Then (AG)he rose and was baptized; 19 and (AH)taking food, he was strengthened.

Saul Proclaims Jesus in Synagogues

For (AI)some days he was with the disciples at Damascus. 20 And immediately he proclaimed Jesus in the synagogues, saying, (AJ)“He is the Son of God.” 21 And all who heard him were amazed and said, “Is not this the man who (AK)made havoc (AL)in Jerusalem of those who called upon this name? And has he not come here for this purpose, to bring them bound before the chief priests?” 22 But Saul (AM)increased all the more in strength, and (AN)confounded the Jews who lived in Damascus by proving (AO)that Jesus was the Christ.

Saul Escapes from Damascus

23 (AP)When many days had passed, the Jews[a] plotted to kill him, 24 but their (AQ)plot became known to Saul. (AR)They were watching the gates day and night in order to kill him, 25 but his disciples took him by night and (AS)let him down through an opening in the wall,[b] lowering him in a basket.

Psalm 131

I Have Calmed and Quieted My Soul

A Song of (A)Ascents. Of David.

131 O Lord, my heart is not (B)lifted up;
my eyes are not (C)raised too high;
I do not (D)occupy myself with things
too great and (E)too marvelous for me.
But I have calmed and quieted my soul,
like a weaned (F)child with its mother;
like a weaned child is my soul within me.

(G)O Israel, hope in the Lord
from this time forth and forevermore.

1 Kings 9:1-10:29, Acts 8:14-40, Psalms 130:1-8, Proverbs 17:2-3

Today is the 12th day of June. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian. It’s great to be here with you as we pass through the center of a week, not “a” week, this week and move ourselves toward the back half and we’re moving ourselves in the middle of the month friends. It just keeps…it just keeps happening. Like magic, day by day, step-by-step we move through another year and we move through another revolution in the Bible and another revolution in our lives. So, we take that next step forward. We’re reading from the English Standard Version this week. This is kind of a special day. This is the 163rd day of the year and we have been traveling on a journey, since pretty much the beginning of the Bible toward a Promised Land, right? And, so, we took that journey all the way until we were at the banks of the Jordan River with Joshua and we came into the land and then the land was conquered and today we reach what is the apex of that Promised Land in the Scriptures. Everything starts to slide downward, downhill from here. So, I’m telling you that in advance so that as we read through our reading from first Kings today, that we can experience this apex, this mountaintop experience that we’ve been journeying toward since almost the beginning of the year. So, having said that, we’re reading from the English Standard Version this week. First Kings chapters 9 and 10 today.

Commentary:

Okay. So, as I mentioned at the beginning, we were moving into the apex of the ancient land of Israel that we had been journeying toward and that is what we witness today. We will see that as we begin to read tomorrow things are going to go off the other side. Like, we’ve been working our way up this mountain to this greatest moment when everybody is on board and prosperity is boundless. I mean, can you imagine the things that were described today, like eating utensils made of pure gold, right? Silver being so plentiful that you don’t even count it. Just imagine the buildings that have been described today. We may see them now and think, “I don’t know, that’s not such a big deal”, but at the time this was the absolute center of a progressive culture. So, you imagine this fleet of ships at Ezion-geber, right, by Eloth. Eloth is still a city down at the Red Sea. So, you imagine this fleet of ships sails away down into deepest Africa coming back with these treasures. You imagine dignitaries coming from all over the world to just see this spectacle, right? We read the story of the Queen of Sheba and her fascination, deep fascination with Solomon, and everything and everything that was going on. So, we are right in the middle of the absolute tip, the best moment and we should just enjoy it. We’ve climbed a long way to get here and it will only last for one day and tomorrow we’ll begin to look at its the latter years of Solomon’s reign and what comes next after Solomon.

In the book of Acts, Philip is instructed to follow the road out of Jerusalem down to Gaza, which is the road going down into Egypt, which is one of the main roads that connect the continents. So, a main road for sure and he obeys and there’s this Ethiopian and the gospel is shared with the Ethiopian and the Ethiopian is baptized. And it’s like a little bit of an aside like and then Phillips gone. And the next thing he knows, he’s in his Otis and then he is on his way to Caesarea and it’s just this kind of quick thing. And yet this Ethiopian was a very prominent official, right, of Queen Candace of Ethiopia. And, so, no doubt because he’s been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus he’s going to take the story back to Ethiopia, so back to Africa. And, so, we begin to see that the gospel is spreading in all directions. It’s making a beeline out of Jerusalem because Saul is on a rampage persecuting Christians. So, it’s going in all directions and we see that now it’s moving southward into the continent of Africa.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word. We thank You for bringing us to this point and we enjoy this point under King Solomon’s reign in the Old Testament because we’ve been journeying toward this point, even when we crossed the Jordan into the Promised Land, and we finally were able to step foot with the children of Israel in the Promised Land, it was still in undeveloped land. And, so, now we have a picture of things as they reached their pinnacle. And we already know that since we reached the mountaintop and it’s not gonna stay here, that it’s gonna begin to deteriorate. And we ask, Holy Spirit, that You allow us to see how that happened and what happened and where those roads lead because they all apply to our own lives and our own mountaintop experiences and the same reasons why we go down the other side. So, come Holy Spirit we pray. In the name of Jesus, we ask. Amen.

1 Kings 9-10

The Lord Appears to Solomon

(A)As soon as Solomon had finished building the house of the Lord (B)and the king's house and (C)all that Solomon desired to build, (D)the Lord appeared to Solomon a second time, as he had appeared to him at Gibeon. And the Lord said to him, “I have heard your prayer and your plea, which you have made before me. I have consecrated this house that you have built, (E)by putting my name there forever. (F)My eyes and my heart will be there for all time. And as for you, if you will (G)walk before me, (H)as David your father walked, with integrity of heart and uprightness, doing according to all that I have commanded you, and keeping my statutes and my rules, (I)then I will establish your royal throne over Israel forever, as I promised David your father, saying, ‘You shall not lack a man on the throne of Israel.’ (J)But if you turn aside from following me, you or your children, and do not keep my commandments and my statutes that I have set before you, but go and serve other gods and worship them, (K)then I will cut off Israel from the land that I have given them, (L)and the house that I have consecrated for my name I will cast out of my sight, (M)and Israel will become a proverb and a byword among all peoples. And this house will become a heap of ruins.[a] Everyone passing by it will be astonished and will hiss, and they will say, (N)‘Why has the Lord done thus to this land and to this house?’ Then they will say, ‘Because (O)they abandoned the Lord their God who brought their fathers out of the land of Egypt and laid hold on other gods and worshiped them and served them. Therefore the Lord has brought all this disaster on them.’”

Solomon's Other Acts

10 (P)At the end of (Q)twenty years, in which Solomon had built the two houses, the house of the Lord and the king's house, 11 and Hiram king of Tyre had supplied Solomon with cedar and cypress timber and gold, as much as he desired, King Solomon gave to Hiram twenty cities in the land of Galilee. 12 But when Hiram came from Tyre to see the cities that Solomon had given him, they did not please him. 13 Therefore he said, “What kind of cities are these that you have given me, my brother?” So they are called the land of (R)Cabul to this day. 14 Hiram had sent to the king 120 talents[b] of gold.

15 And this is the account of (S)the forced labor that King Solomon drafted to build the house of the Lord and his own house and (T)the Millo and the wall of Jerusalem and (U)Hazor and (V)Megiddo and Gezer 16 (Pharaoh king of Egypt had gone up and captured Gezer and burned it with fire, and had killed (W)the Canaanites who lived in the city, and had given it as dowry to (X)his daughter, Solomon's wife; 17 so Solomon rebuilt Gezer) and (Y)Lower Beth-horon 18 and Baalath and Tamar in the wilderness, in the land of Judah,[c] 19 and all the store cities that Solomon had, and (Z)the cities for his chariots, and the cities for (AA)his horsemen, and whatever Solomon (AB)desired to build in Jerusalem, in Lebanon, and in all the land of his dominion. 20 All the people who were left of the Amorites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites, who were not of the people of Israel— 21 (AC)their descendants who were left after them in the land, (AD)whom the people of Israel were unable to devote to destruction[d](AE)these Solomon drafted to be (AF)slaves, and so they are to this day. 22 But (AG)of the people of Israel Solomon made no slaves. They were the soldiers, they were his officials, his commanders, his captains, his chariot commanders and his horsemen.

23 These were the chief officers who were over Solomon's work: (AH)550 (AI)who had charge of the people who carried on the work.

24 But (AJ)Pharaoh's daughter went up from the city of David to (AK)her own house that Solomon had built for her. (AL)Then he built (AM)the Millo.

25 Three times a year Solomon used to offer up burnt offerings and peace offerings on the altar that he built to the Lord, making offerings with it[e] before the Lord. So he finished the house.

26 King Solomon built a fleet of ships at (AN)Ezion-geber, which is near Eloth on the shore of the Red Sea, in the land of Edom. 27 And Hiram sent (AO)with the fleet his servants, seamen who were familiar with the sea, together with the servants of Solomon. 28 And they went to (AP)Ophir and brought from there gold, 420 talents, and they brought it to King Solomon.

The Queen of Sheba

10 (AQ)Now when (AR)the queen of (AS)Sheba heard of the fame of Solomon concerning the name of the Lord, she came (AT)to test him with hard questions. She came to Jerusalem with a very great retinue, with camels (AU)bearing spices and very much gold and precious stones. And when she came to Solomon, she told him all that was on her mind. And Solomon answered all her questions; there was nothing hidden from the king that he could not explain to her. And when the queen of Sheba had seen all the wisdom of Solomon, the house that he had built, the food of his table, the seating of his officials, and the attendance of his servants, their clothing, his cupbearers, and his burnt offerings that he offered at the house of the Lord, there was no more breath in her.

And she said to the king, “The report was true that I heard in my own land of your words and of your wisdom, but I did not believe the reports until I came and my own eyes had seen it. And behold, the half was not told me. Your wisdom and prosperity surpass the report that I heard. (AV)Happy are your men! Happy are your servants, who continually stand before you and hear your wisdom! (AW)Blessed be the Lord your God, who has delighted in you and set you on the throne of Israel! (AX)Because the Lord loved Israel forever, he has made you king, (AY)that you may execute justice and righteousness.” 10 (AZ)Then she gave the king 120 talents[f] of gold, and a very great quantity of spices and precious stones. Never again came such an abundance of spices as these that the queen of Sheba gave to King Solomon.

11 Moreover, (BA)the fleet of Hiram, which brought (BB)gold from Ophir, brought from Ophir a very great amount of almug wood and precious stones. 12 And the king made of the almug wood supports for the house of the Lord and for the king's house, also lyres and harps for the singers. No such almug wood has come or been seen to this day.

13 And King Solomon gave to the queen of Sheba all that she desired, whatever she asked besides what was given her by the bounty of King Solomon. So she turned and went back to her own land with her servants.

Solomon's Great Wealth

14 (BC)Now the weight of gold that came to Solomon in one year was 666 talents of gold, 15 besides that which came from the explorers and from the business of the merchants, and from all the kings of the west and from the governors of the land. 16 King Solomon made 200 large shields of beaten gold; 600 shekels[g] of gold went into each shield. 17 And he made 300 (BD)shields of beaten gold; three minas[h] of gold went into each shield. And the king put them in (BE)the House of the Forest of Lebanon. 18 The king also made a great ivory throne and overlaid it with the finest gold. 19 The throne had six steps, and the throne had a round top,[i] and on each side of the seat were armrests and two lions standing beside the armrests, 20 while twelve lions stood there, one on each end of a step on the six steps. The like of it was never made in any kingdom. 21 All King Solomon's drinking vessels were of gold, and all the vessels of (BF)the House of the Forest of Lebanon were of pure gold. None were of silver; silver was not considered as anything in the days of Solomon. 22 For the king had (BG)a fleet of ships of Tarshish at sea with the fleet of Hiram. Once every three years the fleet of ships of Tarshish used to come bringing gold, silver, ivory, apes, and peacocks.[j]

23 (BH)Thus King Solomon excelled all the kings of the earth in riches and in wisdom. 24 And the whole earth sought the presence of Solomon to hear his wisdom, which God had put into his mind. 25 Every one of them brought his present, articles of silver and gold, garments, myrrh,[k] spices, horses, and mules, so much year by year.

26 (BI)And Solomon gathered together (BJ)chariots and horsemen. He had 1,400 chariots and 12,000 horsemen, whom he stationed in the (BK)chariot cities and with the king in Jerusalem. 27 And the king made silver as common in Jerusalem as stone, and he made cedar as plentiful as (BL)the sycamore of the Shephelah. 28 And Solomon's (BM)import of horses was from Egypt and Kue, and the king's traders received them from Kue at a price. 29 A chariot could be imported from Egypt for 600 shekels of silver and a horse for 150, and so through the king's traders they were exported to all the kings of (BN)the Hittites and the kings of Syria.

Acts 8:14-40

14 Now when (A)the apostles at Jerusalem heard that (B)Samaria had received the word of God, they sent to them Peter and John, 15 who came down and prayed for them (C)that they might receive the Holy Spirit, 16 for (D)he had not yet (E)fallen on any of them, but (F)they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 17 Then (G)they laid their hands on them and (H)they received the Holy Spirit. 18 Now when Simon saw that the Spirit was given through the laying on of the apostles' hands, he offered them money, 19 saying, “Give me this power also, so that anyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit.” 20 But Peter said to him, (I)“May your silver perish with you, because you thought you could obtain the gift of God (J)with money! 21 You have neither part nor lot in this matter, for (K)your heart is not right before God. 22 Repent, therefore, of this wickedness of yours, and pray to the Lord that, (L)if possible, the intent of your heart may be forgiven you. 23 For I see that you are in (M)the gall[a] of bitterness and in (N)the bond of iniquity.” 24 And Simon answered, (O)“Pray for me to the Lord, that nothing of what you have said may come upon me.”

25 Now when they had testified and spoken the word of the Lord, they returned to Jerusalem, (P)preaching the gospel to many villages of the Samaritans.

Philip and the Ethiopian Eunuch

26 Now (Q)an angel of the Lord said to Philip, “Rise and go toward the south[b] to the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.” This is a desert place. 27 And he rose and went. And there was an (R)Ethiopian, a (S)eunuch, a court official of Candace, queen of the Ethiopians, (T)who was in charge of all her treasure. (U)He had come to Jerusalem to worship 28 and was returning, seated in his chariot, and he was reading the prophet Isaiah. 29 And the Spirit said to Philip, “Go over and join this chariot.” 30 So Philip ran to him and heard him reading Isaiah the prophet and asked, “Do you understand what you are reading?” 31 And he said, (V)“How can I, unless someone (W)guides me?” And (X)he invited Philip to come up and sit with him. 32 Now the passage of the Scripture that he was reading was this:

(Y)“Like a sheep he was led to the slaughter
and like a lamb before its shearer is silent,
so he opens not his mouth.
33 In his (Z)humiliation justice was denied him.
Who can describe his generation?
For his life is taken away from the earth.”

34 And the eunuch said to Philip, “About whom, I ask you, does the prophet say this, about himself or about someone else?” 35 Then Philip opened his mouth, and (AA)beginning with this Scripture (AB)he told him the good news about Jesus. 36 And as they were going along the road they came to some water, and the eunuch said, “See, here is water! (AC)What prevents me from being baptized?”[c] 38 And he commanded the chariot to stop, and they both went down into the water, Philip and the eunuch, and he baptized him. 39 And when they came up out of the water, (AD)the Spirit of the Lord (AE)carried Philip away, and the eunuch saw him no more, and went on his way rejoicing. 40 But Philip found himself at Azotus, and as he passed through he preached the gospel to all the towns until he came to Caesarea.

Psalm 130

My Soul Waits for the Lord

A Song of (A)Ascents.

130 Out of (B)the depths I cry to you, O Lord!
O Lord, hear my voice!
(C)Let your ears be attentive
to (D)the voice of my pleas for mercy!

If you, O Lord, should (E)mark iniquities,
O Lord, who could (F)stand?
But with you there is (G)forgiveness,
(H)that you may be feared.

I (I)wait for the Lord, (J)my soul waits,
and (K)in his word I hope;
my soul (L)waits for the Lord
more than (M)watchmen for (N)the morning,
more than watchmen for the morning.

O Israel, (O)hope in the Lord!
For (P)with the Lord there is steadfast love,
and with him is plentiful redemption.
And he will (Q)redeem Israel
from all his iniquities.

Proverbs 17:2-3

A servant who deals wisely will rule over (A)a son who acts shamefully
and (B)will share the inheritance as one of the brothers.
(C)The crucible is for silver, and the furnace is for gold,
(D)and the Lord tests hearts.
