2 Samuel 1:1-2:11, John 12:20-50, Psalms 118:19-29, Proverbs 15:27-28

Today is the 22nd day of May. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian. It is a pleasure, it is an honor, and it is a joy to be here with you today to take the next step forward on our journey that is leading us through the Scriptures this year. And, so, we finished the book of first Samuel yesterday and that, of course, brings us to the book of second Samuel that we will begin momentarily, but let’s just kind of catch ourselves up.

Introduction to the book of second Samuel:

By way of reminder, since we talked about this when we began first Samuel, first and second Samuel was all a single collection of books, together with other texts that were then later on separated along the way for clarification and ease of finding things. It would’ve been pretty hard for Samuel to have written second Samuel since he had already died and we experienced his death in first Samuel and we even saw the King Saul go to a medium to try to bring him up from the dead and the last thing we have Samuel saying to anyone is to tell Saul that tomorrow you’ll be with me and he was killed among Gilboa at the hands of the Philistines in battle the next day. So, we don’t actually know who penned second Samuel, but it does seem that whoever did had first-hand first-person knowledge of the events. And second Samuel, as we move into in just a second here, it’s gonna pick up right where we left off. It’s not like we’re gonna be switching gears and complexions here. We’ve basically concluded the book of first Samuel with the death of Saul and his sons and we’ll pick up there and second Samuel will cover the life of David and his ascension to the throne and his victories and his passion for God and then then the mountaintop of his life and the trailing off, his falling away from God as well. And we’re gonna just sit here on the front row and see how much all of this applies to our lives because we’ll find ourselves in the life of David, often as we did with Saul and it gives us one more example of how pressing into God, obeying God, following God with our whole heart brings about victory and falling away from God brings about rebellion and eventually brings about destruction. And One more thing just before you get started in second Samuel to note is that, a lot of these stories we’re gonna hear them again when we get to the books of first and second Chronicles but they won’t be word for word and they won’t be from the same perspective and that’s the interesting thing about the Bible. We have this story of David and we’re reading it right now from a prophetic perspective in the books of Samuel who was a prophet and a judge of Israel. When we get to the books of first and second Chronicles we’ll read the life of David from a priestly perspective and get their commentary on these same stories, but that’s not for now, that’s for when we get there. Just a little bit of a heads up because when we get there it’ll like we’re hearing some of the same territory again wonder and we’ll wonder, “haven’t I heard this story”, which is very some similar to what we get in Matthew, Mark, and Luke in the synoptic Gospels. Nevertheless, let’s dive in. we’re reading from the Christian Standard Bible this week. Second Samuel chapter 1 verse 1 through 2 verse 11.

Commentary:

Okay. So, as we began second Samuel today David finds out that Saul has been killed and he laments, “oh how the mighty have fallen” and we begin to turn our attention, of course, to David and his reaction and all the comes next. And we see that he grieved for a lost king and a lost father-in-law who wanted to do nothing more than to kill him. And it’s actually this, David’s humble posture and the way that he’s beginning to lead contrasted so starkly with Saul’s that will become apparent and compelling to the people as we move forward into the story because, you know, we can think of this Sunday school style and say, “okay I know…I know Saul was the first king of Israel and David followed him.” And we can just think, “well…Saul was killed and so they made David King and that’s just how it was.” But that’s not just how it was. Saul’s death didn’t make David Israel’s King. David inquired of the Lord, as we just read, about where he should go because he was in Philistine territory and he was a Philistine and was asking God if he should go back to his homeland. And God said, “go" and David said, “where” and God said, “Hebron”. So, David moved to the city of Hebron where he was subsequently made the king of the tribe of Judah, right? So, one of the tribes of Israel. So, now the king of Israel has died and one of the tribes of Israel have decided to make their own king and that’s David. Meanwhile, Saul has a remaining heir that’s still alive, his name Ish-bosheth and Abner, the general of the Army who survived the battle, mad Ish-bosheth king. So, that’s where we are. That’s the lay of the land as we move forward in second Samuel.

And then in John’s Gospel we move another step further into the story of Jesus final days and we just…we saw the whole situation descending on Jesus one more time, right? He’s like, “my soul is troubled. Should I ask the Father to save me from this hour?” But this is this is why came. So, Father, bring glory to your name.” And we can notice that right to the end confusion swirled around Jesus. Even though the words that he spoke spoke deeply into the hearts of his hearers and awakened their souls, and even though his ministry confirmed that He was truly sent from God, the religious traditions were so deeply ingrained that it was…that it was nearly impossible to penetrate and, in the end, impossible to penetrate. And ironically Jesus ambition wasn’t to destroy anybody’s traditions. He was living within them, but he was also critiquing them in the process and most of the people didn’t understand. And Jesus is like, “the lights only gonna be shining a little while longer, like while I’m here. So, walk in the light while you can so that the darkness won’t overtake you because the people who are walking in the darkness don’t know where they’re going. So, walk in the light while you still have time so you can become children of the light.” Okay, so these issues that are confronting Jesus as we read through them in the Gospels and in the Gospel of John in particular right now, these issues are still around. The gospel has been handed down to us over thousands of years, but over that time people have created new traditions. And even though our rich heritage and traditions in the faith are incredibly valuable, the ceilings that we put on those traditions are not very valuable. When we think we got the whole thing perfect and indestructible, right, our theology is bulletproof, then Jesus often comes to tear down our ceilings. That’s what we’re watching him…that’s why the religious leaders are so angry at him. But through this example we should understand that the Father isn’t going to conform to what we think we know. And when we’re stretched out in our faith, we think it’s so thin that we begin to doubt, and then we feel guilty about that, we’re not doing something wrong, we’re reaching beyond the ceiling because it’s not enough anymore. So, as we consider our doubts and our fears and our assumptions about our faith let’s ask ourselves whether we’re any less confused then the people hearing Jesus were because this forces us to face whether what we’ve been told is truth and we’re often forced to reach beyond ourselves and beyond what we think we know and reach for God, which is the point of faith. So, Jesus says, “I’ve come as a light to shine in the dark world so that everyone who puts their trust in me will no longer be in the dark.” This is for everybody. This is for you and this is for me, but it’s gonna require that we reach into the dark and through the dark beyond the ceilings we’ve placed on our faith and reach for the light and realize there isn’t a ceiling.

Prayer:

Holy Spirt we invite You into that because the ceilings, we’ve constructed them ourselves to try to keep ourselves safe, but they just cover over the light shining in and we’re lost in the dark again when You’ve invited us into freedom, into complete freedom. We believe that You have invited us into the light to be transformed into children of the light and we believe that that is what is going on and we also confess that we that we spend too much time in the dark. Come Holy Spirit, because we’re choosing this. Come Holy Spirit, lead us into all truth, lead us into the light of the Savior today we pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.

2 Samuel 1:1-2:11

Responses to Saul’s Death

After the death of Saul,(A) David returned from defeating the Amalekites(B) and stayed at Ziklag two days. On the third day a man with torn clothes and dust on his head(C) came from Saul’s camp. When he came to David, he fell to the ground and paid homage. David asked him, “Where have you come from?”

He replied to him, “I’ve escaped from the Israelite camp.”

“What was the outcome? Tell me,” David asked him.

“The troops fled from the battle,” he answered. “Many of the troops have fallen and are dead. Also, Saul and his son Jonathan are dead.”(D)

David asked the young man who had brought him the report, “How do you know Saul and his son Jonathan are dead?”

“I happened to be on Mount Gilboa,”(E) he replied, “and there was Saul, leaning on his spear. At that very moment the chariots and the cavalry were closing in on him. When he turned around and saw me, he called out to me, so I answered: I’m at your service. He asked me, ‘Who are you?’ I told him: I’m an Amalekite.(F) Then he begged me, ‘Stand over me and kill me, for I’m mortally wounded,[a] but my life still lingers.’(G) 10 So I stood over him and killed him because I knew that after he had fallen he couldn’t survive. I took the crown that was on his head and the armband that was on his arm, and I’ve brought them here to my lord.”

11 Then David took hold of his clothes and tore them,(H) and all the men with him did the same. 12 They mourned, wept, and fasted until the evening(I) for those who died by the sword—for Saul, his son Jonathan, the Lord’s people, and the house of Israel.

13 David inquired of the young man who had brought him the report, “Where are you from?”

“I’m the son of a resident alien,” he said. “I’m an Amalekite.”

14 David questioned him, “How is it that you were not afraid to lift your hand to destroy the Lord’s anointed?” (J) 15 Then David summoned one of his servants and said, “Come here and kill him!” The servant struck him, and he died.(K) 16 For David had said to the Amalekite, “Your blood is on your own head(L) because your own mouth testified against you by saying, ‘I killed the Lord’s anointed.’”

17 David sang the following lament(M) for Saul and his son Jonathan, 18 and he ordered that the Judahites be taught The Song of the Bow. It is written in the Book of Jashar:[b](N)

19 The splendor of Israel lies slain on your heights.
How the mighty have fallen!
20 Do not tell it in Gath,
don’t announce it in the marketplaces of Ashkelon,
or the daughters of the Philistines will rejoice,(O)
and the daughters of the uncircumcised will celebrate.
21 Mountains of Gilboa,
let no dew or rain be on you,
or fields of offerings,[c]
for there the shield of the mighty was defiled(P)
the shield of Saul, no longer anointed with oil.(Q)
22 Jonathan’s bow never retreated,
Saul’s sword never returned unstained,[d]
from the blood of the slain,
from the flesh[e] of the mighty.
23 Saul and Jonathan,
loved and delightful,
they were not parted in life or in death.
They were swifter than eagles, stronger than lions.
24 Daughters of Israel, weep for Saul,
who clothed you in scarlet, with luxurious things,
who decked your garments with gold ornaments.(R)
25 How the mighty have fallen in the thick of battle!
Jonathan lies slain on your heights.
26 I grieve for you, Jonathan, my brother.
You were such a friend to me.
Your love for me was more wondrous
than the love of women.(S)
27 How the mighty have fallen
and the weapons of war have perished!

David, King of Judah

Some time later, David inquired of the Lord:(T) “Should I go to one of the towns of Judah?”

The Lord answered him, “Go.”

Then David asked, “Where should I go?”

“To Hebron,”(U) the Lord replied.

So David went there with his two wives, Ahinoam the Jezreelite and Abigail, the widow of Nabal the Carmelite.(V) In addition, David brought the men who were with him, each one with his family, and they settled in the towns near Hebron.(W) Then the men of Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah.(X) They told David: “It was the men of Jabesh-gilead who buried Saul.”(Y)

David sent messengers to the men of Jabesh-gilead and said to them, “The Lord bless you, because you have shown this kindness to Saul your lord when you buried him. Now, may the Lord show kindness and faithfulness to you, and I will also show the same goodness to you because you have done this deed. Therefore, be strong[f] and valiant, for though Saul your lord is dead, the house of Judah has anointed me king over them.”

Abner son of Ner, commander of Saul’s army,(Z) took Saul’s son Ish-bosheth[g][h] and moved him to Mahanaim. He made him king over Gilead, Asher, Jezreel, Ephraim, Benjamin—over all Israel. 10 Saul’s son Ish-bosheth was forty years old when he became king over Israel; he reigned for two years. The house of Judah, however, followed David. 11 The length of time that David was king in Hebron over the house of Judah was seven years and six months.(AA)

John 12:20-50

Jesus Predicts His Crucifixion

20 Now some Greeks were among those who went up to worship at the festival. 21 So they came to Philip,(A) who was from Bethsaida(B) in Galilee,(C) and requested of him, “Sir,(D) we want to see Jesus.” 22 Philip went and told Andrew;(E) then Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus.

23 Jesus replied to them, “The hour has come for the Son of Man(F) to be glorified. 24 Truly I tell you, unless a grain of wheat(G) falls to the ground and dies, it remains by itself. But if it dies, it produces much fruit.(H) 25 The one who loves his life will lose it,(I) and the one who hates(J) his life(K) in this world will keep it for eternal life. 26 If anyone serves me, he must follow me. Where I am, there my servant(L) also will be.(M) If anyone serves me, the Father will honor(N) him.

27 “Now my soul is troubled. What should I say—Father, save me(O) from this hour? But that is why I came to this hour. 28 Father, glorify your name.”[a](P)

Then a voice(Q) came from heaven: (R) “I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.”(S)

29 The crowd standing there heard it and said it was thunder. Others said, “An angel has spoken to him.”

30 Jesus responded, “This voice came, not for me, but for you.(T) 31 Now is the judgment of this world.(U) Now the ruler of this world(V) will be cast out.(W) 32 As for me, if I am lifted up[b] from the earth I will draw all people to myself.”(X) 33 He said this to indicate what kind of death he was about to die.(Y)

34 Then the crowd replied to him, “We have heard from the law that the Messiah will remain forever.(Z) So how can you say, ‘The Son of Man(AA) must be lifted up’? Who is this Son of Man?”

35 Jesus answered, “The light will be with you only a little longer.(AB) Walk while you have the light(AC) so that darkness doesn’t overtake you.(AD) The one who walks in darkness doesn’t know where he’s going.(AE) 36 While you have the light,(AF) believe in the light so that you may become children of light.” Jesus said this, then went away and hid from them.(AG)

Isaiah’s Prophecies Fulfilled

37 Even though he had performed so many signs in their presence, they did not believe in him. 38 This was to fulfill(AH) the word of Isaiah(AI) the prophet, who said:[c]

Lord, who has believed our message?
And to whom has the arm(AJ) of the Lord been revealed?[d](AK)

39 This is why they were unable to believe, because Isaiah also said:

40 He has blinded(AL) their eyes
and hardened their hearts,(AM)
so that they would not see with their eyes
or understand with their hearts,
and turn,(AN)
and I would heal them.[e](AO)

41 Isaiah said these things because[f] he saw his glory(AP) and spoke about him.

42 Nevertheless, many did believe in him even among the rulers,(AQ) but because of the Pharisees they did not confess him, so that they would not be banned from the synagogue. 43 For they loved human praise(AR) more than praise from God.(AS)

A Summary of Jesus’s Mission

44 Jesus cried out, “The one who believes in me(AT) believes not in me, but in him who sent me. 45 And the one who sees me sees him(AU) who sent me. 46 I have come as light into the world, so that everyone who believes in me would not remain in darkness. 47 If anyone hears my words and doesn’t keep(AV) them, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world(AW) but to save the world.(AX) 48 The one who rejects me(AY) and doesn’t receive my sayings has this as his judge: [g] The word I have spoken will judge him on the last day.(AZ) 49 For I have not spoken on my own, but the Father(BA) himself who sent me has given me a command to say everything I have said. 50 I know that his command is eternal life.(BB) So the things that I speak, I speak just as the Father has told me.”(BC)

1 Samuel 29:1-31:13, John 11:55-12:19, Psalms 118:1-18, Proverbs 15:24-26

Today is the 21st day of May. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian. It’s awesome to have this time together around the global campfire and allow God’s word to speak to us. And it’s kind of a special day. We’ll be finishing the book of first Samuel today, which has mostly been the story of King Saul. But of course, King Saul’s story is irreplaceably or irreversibly intertwined with David. So, we’ll be finishing up that story today and then moving into second Samuel tomorrow where we’ll be beginning to put our focus on David and his rise to kingship. But first, first Samuel chapter 29, 30, and 31. We’re reading from the Christian Standard Bible this week.

Commentary:

Okay. So, as we concluded, the book of first Samuel today. We also reached the conclusion of King Saul’s life along with his three heirs to the throne, including Jonathan who was in covenant with David and loved David. And, you know, David was about to go into battle with the Philistines against Jonathan, like against his fellow Hebrews because he had defected and become a Philistine to save his own life, because the king of Israel, King Saul, was intent on destroying him. So, we read the story and we know how this goes. They actually marched from Ziklag in the South, in the transition zone into the desert all the way up into the Jezreel Valley, a long way, three days journey by marching and that would actually have been moving fast. David was gonna go into battle but the Philistine…the other Philistine leaders were like, “you know, if he turns on us in the middle of this, if he’s really a warrior then, you know, things could go really, really bad for the Philistines.” So, they sent him away. They marched all the way back to Zikzag only to find out the Amalekites raided Ziklag and burned it and taken everything and everyone. So, they go in pursuit and they get all of their stuff back and destroy their enemies but as they’re fighting the Amalekites and destroying their enemies who had destroyed their city, up in the north of the Philistines have destroyed the Israelite army and have killed the king. And when they discover the king’s body they beheaded him and then they hung his body on the walls of Beth-shan. Beth-shan is a magnificent archaeological ruin in the north of Israel, just south of the Sea of Galilee a little bit. And we’ve filmed there many times. It’s included in the Promised Land films as is Ziklag. And, so, we end first Samuel with the death of Saul and we’ll pick up Second Samuel tomorrow and begin to follow the story right where we left off, but we’ll begin to be focusing upon David.

In the gospel of John, we are approaching Jesus final days. And I know that we just came through Easter and good Friday and we did everything we could to reverence the moment. And, so, we kind of find ourselves in this territory again and maybe thinking, “we just kinda went through this couple weeks ago, like a month ago.” However, this is the last time this year we will be going through this territory in the Bible. This is the last time that this story will come to us through the Gospels because we are moving our way to the conclusion of the Gospels. John is the final gospel and we’ll move from here into the book of acts and all that begins to come next. So, as we are right at the front end of this territory let’s go ahead and make a mental note to truly embrace what we’re reading and once again profoundly understand what God did on our behalf to rescue us.

Prayer:

Jesus, we do thank You. Every day we thank You. And may our lives be living thanks to You, a living memorial to what You have done, a living sacrifice to reveal Your kingdom in this world. We are so deeply grateful that our words…there is no way to string them together for them to be anywhere near the magnitude of what they deserve. Language fails in this area. We give our lives to You completely, unreservedly. We trust You and we invite You into this retelling in the gospel of John of the sacrifice that You made on our behalf. But we also ask, Holy Spirit, that as we transition between the books of first and second Samuel, and between King Saul and the emerging King David, that we continue with this journey because it is so poignant into our own lives and our own motivations. There’s so much there for us to understand about ourselves. So, come Holy Spirit into this we pray. In Jesus’ name we ask. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hi, this is Bonnie from Northern California and I’ve never called in before, but I’ve been listening to your program for a few years now. I regret not calling in and when my husband passed away almost 4 years ago in August. And my mom just went to be with the Lord the other day and I just find so much comfort. But I’m reaching out to Joe in New Jersey. I just heard your prayer request. You have ALS and I’m praying with tears over your condition and I am praying for God’s touch on your body. The other thing I ask is that you would pray for my friend Kim who’s just embroiled in a horrible court battle and I just want the Daily Audio Bible community to pray for her and her family. Wednesday, the…oh gee…today’s the 18th…so the 22nd I think…she’s going to be…I don’t know what’s happening that day but I’m fasting for three days and praying for her. So, please pray for her and her family that justice would take place. Many lies have been told about her. Thank you for praying. I love you all and I pray for you all. Thank you. Bye-bye.

My name is Joe Borman, I live in Waukegan Illinois and my prayer request is for my 44-year-old daughter whose name is Krista. She was diagnosed with stage IV melanoma cancer in March and has been getting treatment downtown Chicago and the treatments that she’s been getting have many side effects that have left her extremely tired and nauseous and in a lot of pain. There are a lot of options for treatment going forward. So, this prayer request is A), that God would just heal her. We believe that He can do that. And sometimes he uses doctors and medicine. And the prayer then is for discernment, to know which doctors to listen to, that the treatment options that she’s left with that she would have discernment on which ones to choose. Pray also for relief for her pain. Since she was seven years old she’s had juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. One of the side effects of the medicine she’s taking is that that would rear up and it has with a vengeance. She has a very difficult time walking, her knees are very swollen, and painful. This is a woman who has always been a woman of God, very faithful. And we are praying and invite the world to pray with us that God could be magnified and glorified by the healing of our daughter. For her to get released from this would be a miracle indeed. So, thank you in advance for your…

Hello Daily Audio Bible friends and family, I’m so grateful for each and every one of you. I’ve been listening for many years and have only called in once but have been so blessed by each and every one. I called several years ago about my friend Danny who needed a miracle because my husband had shared we need 10,000 prayer warriors. Little did he know I knew a place where we could find them. There was work from God in my son’s life and I ask you to continue to pray for him, his name is Danny. He’s now a daddy, working hard but still facing addictions and challenges in his life. I wanted to share something with you. Sometimes God wakes me up early in the morning. Dear Lord, You call me to Your word early in the morning to hear truth. Troubles and challenge is around but You are the only anchor in the storm You hold me safely in the palm of Your mighty hand. I have nothing to fear for You did not give me a Spirit of fear but of power, love, and a sound mind. Lord as I walk through life today fill me to overflowing with love, joy, peace, gentleness, goodness, __, self-control. I need Your wisdom to facilitate each issue. Let me be filled with Your Spirit. Anoint my lips. Help me speak truth and love to all around me. Lord, if You want to use me, equip me. I will go to battle for You. I will be a soldier, but I need Your armor. Don’t ever let me think I can handle something without You. Help me Lord. Peter saw the peace of God a man in human form
Jesus walking on the water in the midst of a raging storm
tranquility serenity his disciples filled with fear
yet Jesus beckoned Peter come and Peter did drawing near
boldly and with courage he walked towards our Lord
___ and danger all around but all of it ignored
his eyes were focused on the prize he rose above the storm
he rose above the waters and he rose above the norm
but then he got distracted because the storm was all around
he felt the wind he saw the waves and he started going down
Satan’s good at doing that he gets our eyes to stray
we take our eyes off Jesus and then we have to pay
repercussions consequences doubts turn into fear
they cut us off from blessings that we should be drawing near
grapes so huge that it takes two men in addition to a pole just to pick it off the ground
two transport it and to hold overflowing blessings take them and possess
but then they saw the giants and I guess you know the rest
Israel wandered in the wilderness they were cursed for 40 years
their eyes strayed from the blessings and they focused on the fears
to us __ can become giants they can also become storms too
but keep your eyes on Jesus he will always bring you through

Hello DAB family this is Abiding in Him. I want to pray for our dear sister in California who called on a rainy day. Lord we thank You for Your faithfulness and that the DAB continues to roll on day in and day out. And across the years have reached out to tens of thousands if not millions of people Lord and we thank You that dear sister has joined the fold heavenly Father and has trusted us with the goings-on of her heart Lord that the community can lift up holy hands Lord and pray for her and bathe her in prayer. Lord she’s at a crossroads in her life where she’s not sure that things are happening are attacks from the devil or invitations from You and I pray heavenly Father that deep in her heart will abide the peace that surpasses understanding, that exists even in the midst of uncertainty or worry or desperate circumstances. I pray for the joy so far deep in her heart that it isn’t changed by the things that she sees. Speak to her Lord in a way that only she can understand so that she can realize that the journey however it twists and turns leads ultimately to You to be closer with You. So, heavenly Father, straighten out the crooked paths Lord, open up the doors and make available the way that she is to go but to know that You even in the case of mistakes and missteps, You’re there working behind the scenes leading us closer to You. We thank You Lord for Your word. We thank You for Your Spirit. We thankful for Your faithfulness and we pray Your blessings over our dear sister in Jesus’ name.

1 Samuel 29-31

Philistines Reject David

29 The Philistines(A) brought all their military units together at Aphek(B) while Israel was camped by the spring in Jezreel.(C) As the Philistine leaders were passing in review with their units of hundreds and thousands, David and his men(D) were passing in review behind them with Achish. Then the Philistine commanders asked, “What are these Hebrews doing here?”

Achish answered the Philistine commanders, “That is David, servant of King Saul of Israel. He has been with me a considerable period of time.[a] From the day he defected until today, I’ve found no fault with him.”(E)

The Philistine commanders, however, were enraged with Achish and told him, “Send that man back and let him return to the place you assigned him.(F) He must not go down with us into battle only to become our adversary during the battle.(G) What better way could he ingratiate himself with his master than with the heads of our men? Isn’t this the David they sing about during their dances:

Saul has killed his thousands,
but David his tens of thousands?” (H)

So Achish summoned David and told him, “As the Lord lives, you are an honorable man. I think it is good[b] to have you fighting[c] in this unit with me, because I have found no fault in you from the day you came to me until today.(I) But the leaders don’t think you are reliable. Now go back quietly and you won’t be doing anything the Philistine leaders think is wrong.”

“But what have I done?” (J) David replied to Achish. “From the first day I entered your service until today, what have you found against your servant to keep me from going to fight against the enemies of my lord the king?”

Achish answered David, “I’m convinced that you are as reliable as an angel of God.(K) But the Philistine commanders have said, ‘He must not go into battle with us.’(L) 10 So get up early in the morning, you and your masters’ servants who came with you.[d](M) When you’ve all gotten up early, go as soon as it’s light.” 11 So David and his men got up early in the morning to return to the land of the Philistines. And the Philistines went up to Jezreel.

David’s Defeat of the Amalekites

30 David and his men(N) arrived in Ziklag(O) on the third day. The Amalekites(P) had raided the Negev and attacked and burned Ziklag. They also had kidnapped the women and everyone[e] in it from youngest to oldest. They had killed no one but had carried them off(Q) as they went on their way.

When David and his men arrived at the town, they found it burned. Their wives, sons, and daughters had been kidnapped. David and the troops with him wept loudly until they had no strength left to weep. David’s two wives,(R) Ahinoam the Jezreelite and Abigail the widow of Nabal the Carmelite, had also been kidnapped. David was in an extremely difficult position because the troops talked about stoning him,(S) for they were all very bitter over the loss of their sons and daughters. But David found strength in the Lord his God.(T)

David said to the priest Abiathar son of Ahimelech, “Bring me the ephod.”(U) So Abiathar brought it to him, and David asked the Lord:(V) “Should I pursue these raiders? Will I overtake them?” (W)

The Lord replied to him, “Pursue them, for you will certainly overtake them and rescue the people.”(X)

So David and the six hundred men with him(Y) went. They came to the Wadi Besor, where some stayed behind.(Z) 10 David and four hundred of the men continued the pursuit, while two hundred stopped because they were too exhausted to cross the Wadi Besor.

11 David’s men found an Egyptian in the open country and brought him to David. They gave him some bread to eat and water to drink. 12 Then they gave him some pressed figs and two clusters of raisins. After he ate he revived,(AA) for he hadn’t eaten food or drunk water for three days and three nights.

13 Then David said to him, “Who do you belong to? Where are you from?”

“I’m an Egyptian, the slave of an Amalekite man,” he said. “My master abandoned me when I got sick three days ago. 14 We raided the south country of the Cherethites,(AB) the territory of Judah, and the south country of Caleb,(AC) and we burned Ziklag.”(AD)

15 David then asked him, “Will you lead me to these raiders?”

He said, “Swear to me by God that you won’t kill me or turn me over to my master, and I will lead you to them.”

16 So he led him, and there were the Amalekites, spread out over the entire area, eating, drinking, and celebrating because of the great amount of plunder(AE) they had taken from the land of the Philistines and the land of Judah. 17 David slaughtered them from twilight until the evening of the next day.(AF) None of them escaped, except four hundred young men who got on camels and fled.(AG)

18 David recovered everything the Amalekites had taken; he also rescued his two wives. 19 Nothing of theirs was missing from the youngest to the oldest, including the sons and daughters, and all the plunder the Amalekites had taken. David got everything back.(AH) 20 He took all the flocks and herds, which were driven ahead of the other livestock, and the people shouted, “This is David’s plunder!” (AI)

21 When David came to the two hundred men who had been too exhausted to go with him and had been left at the Wadi Besor,(AJ) they came out to meet him and to meet the troops with him. When David approached the men, he greeted them, 22 but all the corrupt and worthless men among those who had gone with David argued, “Because they didn’t go with us, we will not give any of the plunder we recovered to them except for each man’s wife and children. They may take them and go.”

23 But David said, “My brothers, you must not do this with what the Lord has given us. He protected us and handed over to us the raiders who came against us. 24 Who can agree to your proposal? The share of the one who goes into battle is to be the same as the share of the one who remains with the supplies. They will share equally.”(AK) 25 And it has been so from that day forward. David established this policy[f] as a law and an ordinance for Israel and it still continues today.

26 When David came to Ziklag, he sent some of the plunder to his friends, the elders of Judah, saying, “Here is a gift for you(AL) from the plunder of the Lord’s enemies.”(AM) 27 He sent gifts[g] to those in Bethel,(AN) in Ramoth of the Negev,(AO) and in Jattir;(AP) 28 to those in Aroer,(AQ) in Siphmoth,(AR) and in Eshtemoa;(AS) 29 to those in Racal, in the towns of the Jerahmeelites,(AT) and in the towns of the Kenites;(AU) 30 to those in Hormah,(AV) in Bor-ashan,(AW) and in Athach; 31 to those in Hebron,(AX) and to those in all the places where David and his men had roamed.(AY)

The Death of Saul and His Sons

31 The Philistines fought against Israel,(AZ) and Israel’s men fled from them and were killed on Mount Gilboa.(BA) The Philistines pursued Saul and his sons and killed his sons, Jonathan, Abinadab, and Malchishua. When the battle intensified against Saul,(BB) the archers found him and severely wounded him.[h] Then Saul said to his armor-bearer,(BC) “Draw your sword and run me through with it, or these uncircumcised men(BD) will come and run me through and torture me!” But his armor-bearer would not do it because he was terrified. Then Saul took his sword and fell on it.(BE) When his armor-bearer saw that Saul was dead, he also fell on his own sword and died with him. So on that day, Saul died together with his three sons, his armor-bearer, and all his men.

When the men of Israel on the other side of the valley and on the other side of the Jordan saw that Israel’s men had fled and that Saul and his sons were dead, they abandoned the cities and fled. So the Philistines came and settled in them.

The next day when the Philistines came to strip the slain, they found Saul and his three sons dead on Mount Gilboa. They cut off Saul’s head, stripped off his armor, and sent messengers throughout the land of the Philistines to spread the good news(BF) in the temples of their idols(BG) and among the people. 10 Then they put his armor in the temple of the Ashtoreths(BH) and hung his body(BI) on the wall of Beth-shan.(BJ)

11 When the residents of Jabesh-gilead(BK) heard what the Philistines had done to Saul, 12 all their brave men(BL) set out, journeyed all night, and retrieved the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons from the wall of Beth-shan. When they arrived at Jabesh, they burned the bodies there.(BM) 13 Afterward, they took their bones and buried them under the tamarisk tree(BN) in Jabesh(BO) and fasted seven days.

John 11:55-12:19

55 Now the Jewish Passover(A) was near, and many went up to Jerusalem(B) from the country to purify themselves before the Passover. 56 They were looking for Jesus and asking one another as they stood in the temple:(C) “What do you think? He won’t come to the festival,(D) will he?” 57 The chief priests(E) and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone knew where he was, he should report it so that they could arrest him.

The Anointing at Bethany

12 Six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany(F) where Lazarus[a] was, the one Jesus had raised from the dead.(G) So(H) they gave a dinner for him there; Martha(I) was serving them, and Lazarus was one of those reclining at the table with him. Then Mary took a pound of perfume, pure and expensive nard, anointed Jesus’s feet, and wiped his feet with her hair.(J) So the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.

Then one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot(K) (who was about to betray him), said, “Why wasn’t this perfume sold for three hundred denarii[b](L) and given to the poor?” He didn’t say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief.(M) He was in charge of the money-bag and would steal part of what was put in it.

Jesus answered, “Leave her alone; she has kept it for the day of my burial.(N) For you always have the poor with you,(O) but you do not always have me.”

The Decision to Kill Lazarus

Then a large crowd of the Jews learned he was there. They came not only because of Jesus but also to see Lazarus, the one he had raised from the dead.(P) 10 But the chief priests had decided to kill Lazarus also, 11 because he was the reason many of the Jews were deserting them[c] and believing in Jesus.

The Triumphal Entry

12 The(Q) next day, when the large crowd that had come to the festival heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, 13 they took palm branches(R) and went out to meet him. They kept shouting:

“Hosanna!(S)
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord[d](T) —the King of Israel!” (U)

14 Jesus found a young donkey(V) and sat on it, just as it is written:

15 Do not be afraid,(W)
Daughter Zion. Look, your King is coming,
sitting on a donkey’s colt.[e](X)

16 His disciples did not understand these things at first. However, when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things had been written about him(Y) and that they had done these things to him.

17 Meanwhile, the crowd, which had been with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb(Z) and raised him from the dead, continued to testify.[f] 18 This is also why the crowd met him, because they heard he had done this sign. 19 Then the Pharisees said to one another, “You see? You’ve accomplished nothing. Look, the world has gone after him!” (AA)

1 Samuel 26:1-28:25, John 11:1-54, Psalms 117:1-2, Proverbs 15:22-23

Today is the 20th day of May. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian and it is a pleasure to be here with you today on this 20th day of the month of May. I guess that gives us 11 days left in this month. So, we’re well through the middle. And boy, we will finish this month and head into our six month of the year already. It’s crazy how quickly things go. What a busy year it’s been though, at least for me. I am learning to maintain, and I am learning that it requires maintenance to maintain and I am learning that in order to have time to do maintenance and maintain maybe there’s some things that have to diminish or maybe even fall away, but one thing remains true and that is the rhythm of the Scriptures speaking life and light and good news into our lives every single day. And, so, we’ll take the next step forward. We’re kind of rounding the bend here on our time in first Samuel. We’ll conclude first Samuel in tomorrow’s readings. So, we’re reading from the Christian Standard Bible this week. And today, first Samuel 26, 27 and 28.

Commentary:

Alright. It’s pretty dramatic happenings going on in first Samuel. Battle lines have been drawn up. David, who has been so intertwined with Saul, right, Saul’s been trying to assassinate David since he killed Goliath practically. David has had to grow up fast, he’s had to grow up in the spotlight, he’s had to learn how to be a warrior, he’s had to learn to be stealthy, he’s had to learn how to stay alive, and he finally…he’s defected to the Philistines and become a Philistine simply to stay away from Saul because he’s thinking, eventually Saul’s gonna get me. So, as it turns out, the entire Philistine army and the entire Israeli army are about to have a huge battle. And David’s now a Philistine and is expected to fight as a Philistine. Saul, on the other hand really has no voice of counsel whatsoever. Like, the isolation has become nearly total. And, so, Saul is seeking out a medium to try to get Samuel’s counsel from beyond the grave, and this happens and Samuel’s counsel as we leave today’s reading is essentially, “I’ll see ya here tomorrow.” So, ominous to say the least as we prepare to turn a corner and end the book of first Samuel tomorrow.

Then in the book of John we have the resurrection of Lazarus, which is indelibly imprinted on my mind because we’ve been there to this location several times and the tomb of Lazarus is something that’s included in the Promised Land films. And there are many things we can talk about in the story of the resurrection of Lazarus, many things that we could talk about, but let’s just focus on the aftermath, right? So, we read the whole story. Jesus is somewhere else. Word gets to him. He eventually gets there. Lazarus has died, right? And the sisters, they have a message for Jesus, they fall down before Jesus and say what we seem to find coming out of our mouths a lot, “if you had only been here”, right, “if you just would have showed up for me, this wouldn’t have happened.” So, there’s so many rich human elements in the story. But it’s a famous story and we know that Lazarus rises from the dead. What is so deeply fascinating is what happens next. I mean Bethany is on the Mount of olives. It’s just like kind of on the back side of the Mount of Olives. And, so, really it is only a couple miles from Jerusalem. So, a resurrection of this magnitude, right, a guy walking out of a tomb wrapped in linen cloths after four days in the grave, how quickly do you think that word could travel two miles. So, it’s not long before people in Jerusalem are finding out about this and it’s not long before the religious leaders are meeting about this. And what is so deeply interesting is that their response to resurrection is to plot assassination, right? So, Jesus is bringing life and their fearful that everyone will believe Him and if everyone does believe Him then the Romans will come and take the power away and maybe even suppress or destroy the religion, which ironically is something that they attempted to do much later. Like, I mean they completely destroyed Jerusalem over rebellion in A.D. 70. So, just a few decades later. So, the thing that they were trying to kill Jesus about, right, to keep the peace, didn’t keep the peace. And we just have this absolutely crystal clear example before us of how twisted we can get when we get enmeshed basically in trying to keep God in our heads, right? So, trying to get God in our heads is the sciences that we have around our religious faith and persuasion. We would call this theology or doctrine. None of these things are bad. They help us form an understanding of what it is we believe. And yet what we are seeing play out in the Gospel of John are people who have devoted their lives to trying to figure that very thing out and how to obey the rules precisely to achieve perfection before God. And their response to God in the flesh, bringing resurrection and the light into the world is to plot to kill him because of what the Roman people might do if everybody believes Jesus. Like, we have this benefit of reading to the Gospels and we can scratch our heads because we’ve come through the age of reason and enlightenment and so we have these processes for sorting out logically things. And, so we can look at this story and go, but guys, like, if everybody believed in a person who could raise people from the dead, who’s not…I mean, who’s in danger here? But their expectation is for a military overthrow of Rome. Like, this is all they can get their minds around. If there is a Messiah coming and they did believe a Messiah, a messianic figure was coming, in their mind this person was going to get everybody on the same page for battle, for military overthrow of Rome, for a rebellion. And they…this was going on before Jesus and it happened after Jesus leading to the destruction of Jerusalem. If you want to read stories of Jewish rebellions against occupiers of the land prior to Jesus, then you read the stories of the Maccabees. Jesus just didn’t fit into the paradigm they were looking for, which was a strong military type leader. Instead, Jesus is walking around bringing light into the darkness by saying, the way you overcome…a more powerful weapon then a sword or a spear is love. Love your enemy’s if you want to truly conquer them. Because the two of you can be enemies and you can kill each other but then your dad, but if one of you loves the other one and that hatred turns into love, then you have gained one another and love has replaced hate, light has replaced darkness in the world. What if this were perpetuated? And they just…they just could not get their minds around it, or probably more true, they may have been able to get their minds around it, they just believed it was an impossibility. It wasn’t ideal because we do the same thing all the time. We’ll be having a conversation and describing something that would be ideal and we’ll say, “in a perfect world…in a perfect world that would be possible.” But we’ve gotta ask ourselves, what are we doing here if we are not here to reveal God’s kingdom and see it on earth as it is in heaven - a perfect world. So, there’s plenty to consider in the story of the raising of Lazarus from the dead. But one of the things we should look at is how the religious people responded by plotting to assassinate Jesus and why because as we look into that we find that those kinds of seeds also live within us.

Prayer:

Father. We invite You into that. We invite You into our doubt and our fear, into our anxieties, into the things that twist us so backward that we do not see forward at all. Like we’re so confused and so deceived and so trapped that we really do functionally believe this is all there is, there is nothing more. And, so, we’ve gotta protect ourselves. We see this playing out in this story today and we see that this is in us as well and we see this in the face of an of a resurrection. So, we see how backward things can get and we invite Your Holy Spirit to show us the places inside of us where we have been twisted backward because of fear and we have been twisted backward because of betrayal and we have been twisted backward because of any number of things that have happened in our lives. We need to be facing forward, we need to be facing forward into the kingdom where we see all things are possible if we believe, which is exactly what You said in this story today. “Didn’t I tell You that You would see the glory of God if You would believe me.” And, so, we choose to believe. Come Holy Spirit we pray. In Jesus’ name we ask. Amen.

1 Samuel 24:1-25:44, John 10:22-42, Psalms 116:1-19, Proverbs 15:20-21

Today is the 19th day of May. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian. It is wonderful to be here with you and step into this brand-new, shiny, sparkly week together. And we’re squarely moving into the back half of this month and we will continue the journey that we have begun with the book of first Samuel learning of King Saul and the dramatic intertwining of lives between Saul and David, who is on the run for his life from Saul. And Saul seems to be determined, he’s going to kill David one way or the other. This week we’ll read from the Christian Standard Bible, and we’ll pick up with that story. First Samuel chapters 24 and 25 today.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word and as we cross this threshold and enter into this new week we thank You for the guidance Your word has brought us throughout this year so far. We thank You for the presence of Your Holy Spirit who leads us into all truth. We thank You for Your compassion and mercy spoken of in the Psalm that we just read today. Thank You for Your kindness, for Your compassion, for her long-suffering, for all of the grace and mercy that You have bestowed and extended toward us even to the point of offering us eternal life. Father forgive us for withholding grace and mercy to those around us because we do this all the time. We feast upon Your mercy and then withhold it from those around us. And we recognize Jesus that You spoke a parable about that very thing. Help us Father go into this week compassionate and merciful as You have been compassionate and merciful toward us. Come Holy Spirit we pray. In the mighty name of Jesus, we ask. Amen.

1 Samuel 22:1-23:29, John 10:1-21, Psalms 115:1-18, Proverbs 15:18-19

Today is the 18th day of May. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian. It is a pleasure. it is a joy, it is an honor to come here and throw couple logs on the global campfire and settle in and know that we are here together just taking a step away from all that’s going on. There’s always something going. There’s plenty of things that could pull us in all kinds of directions. There’s no challenge to find things to be anxious about or worry about and all that stuff will still be there if we really want it, but this is a time that we come together each day and step away from those things and warm ourselves around this global campfire just come in together out of the darkness and know that we’re here, we’re here together, we’re in this together and the Bible is the rhythm of our lives and it speaks to us and directs our paths. So, it’s great to be here with you today as we end another one of our weeks together by taking the next step forward and we’ve been reading from the Voice Translation this week so that’s what we’ll continue to do today and we’ve also been working our way through the book of first Samuel in the story of King Saul and this guy that just got intertwined with his story irreversibly whose name was David. And we’ll pick up the story. First Samuel chapters 22 and 23 today.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word and we, of course, thank You for another week. We thank You for the rhythm day by day, week by week, month by month, year by year, allowing Your word to wash into our lives around this global campfire’s, just allowing You to speak and whatever is going on, whenever it’s going on and reorienting our hearts to You, turning our attention and our affection and our focus upon You, because we recognize how distracted we get. Here we are at the end of a week and as we look back over the week we certainly see Your presence in our lives, but we also see the ways that we’re pulled in so many directions, too many directions to actually maintain. And, so, we ask You again as we move into this year and considering maintaining and maintenance. What is out of alignment? What is too much for us? How do we begin to shrink to the point where our affections and our attention can be focused upon You? Because we admit, most of our time is spoken for and most of our time is spoken for by things that ultimately don’t matter. So, come Holy Spirit we pray in Jesus’ name as we seal this week and release it into the past and it becomes a part of our history, we also look forward to what is before us, the opening of a new week and walking through a new threshold and we want to walk with You better next week then we have this week and two weeks from now we would like that to be better. We would like to continue to move deeper and deeper into relationship with You, which is going to require us to free ourselves from the things that are occupying us that keep us from this. Come Holy Spirit we pray. We can’t do this without You. We don’t even know where to start without You. Come Holy Spirit we pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.

1 Samuel 26-28

David Again Spares Saul

26 Then the Ziphites came to Saul at Gibeah saying, “David is hiding on the hill of Hachilah opposite Jeshimon.”(A) So Saul, accompanied by three thousand of the fit young men of Israel,(B) went immediately to the Wilderness of Ziph to search for David there. Saul camped beside the road at the hill of Hachilah(C) opposite Jeshimon. David was living in the wilderness and discovered Saul had come there after him.(D) So David sent out spies and knew for certain that Saul had come. Immediately, David went to the place where Saul had camped. He saw the place where Saul and Abner son of Ner,(E) the commander of his army, were lying down. Saul was lying inside the inner circle of the camp with the troops camped around him. Then David asked Ahimelech the Hethite(F) and Joab’s brother Abishai(G) son of Zeruiah, “Who will go with me into the camp(H) to Saul?”

“I’ll go with you,” answered Abishai.

That night, David and Abishai came to the troops, and Saul was lying there asleep in the inner circle of the camp with his spear stuck in the ground by his head. Abner and the troops were lying around him. Then Abishai said to David, “Today God has delivered your enemy to you. Let me thrust the spear through him into the ground just once. I won’t have to strike him twice!”

But David said to Abishai, “Don’t destroy him, for who can lift a hand against the Lord’s anointed and be innocent?” (I) 10 David added, “As the Lord lives, the Lord will certainly strike him down:(J) either his day will come and he will die, or he will go into battle and perish. 11 However, because of the Lord, I will never lift my hand against the Lord’s anointed.(K) Instead, take the spear and the water jug by his head, and let’s go.”

12 So David took the spear and the water jug by Saul’s head, and they went their way. No one saw them, no one knew, and no one woke up; they all remained asleep because a deep sleep from the Lord(L) came over them. 13 David crossed to the other side and stood on top of the mountain at a distance; there was a considerable space between them. 14 Then David shouted to the troops and to Abner son of Ner: “Aren’t you going to answer, Abner?”

“Who are you who calls to the king?” Abner asked.

15 David called to Abner, “You’re a man, aren’t you? Who in Israel is your equal? So why didn’t you protect your lord the king when one of the people came to destroy him? 16 What you have done is not good. As the Lord lives, all of you deserve to die[a] since you didn’t protect your lord, the Lord’s anointed.(M) Now look around; where are the king’s spear and water jug that were by his head?”

17 Saul recognized David’s voice and asked, “Is that your voice, my son David?” (N)

“It is my voice, my lord and king,” David said. 18 Then he continued, “Why is my lord pursuing his servant? What have I done? What crime have I committed?(O) 19 Now, may my lord the king please hear the words of his servant: If it is the Lord who has incited you against me,(P) then may he accept an offering.(Q) But if it is people,(R) may they be cursed in the presence of the Lord, for today they have banished me from sharing in the inheritance of the Lord saying,(S) ‘Go and worship other gods.’ 20 So don’t let my blood fall to the ground far from the Lord’s presence, for the king of Israel has come out to search for a single flea,(T) like one who pursues a partridge in the mountains.”

21 Saul responded, “I have sinned.(U) Come back, my son David, I will never harm you again because today you considered my life precious. I have been a fool! I’ve committed a grave error.”

22 David answered, “Here is the king’s spear; have one of the young men come over and get it. 23 The Lord will repay every man for his righteousness(V) and his loyalty. I wasn’t willing to lift my hand against the Lord’s anointed, even though the Lord handed you over to me today.(W) 24 Just as I considered your life valuable today, so may the Lord consider my life valuable(X) and rescue me from all trouble.”(Y)

25 Saul said to him, “You are blessed, my son David. You will certainly do great things and will also prevail.”(Z) Then David went on his way, and Saul returned home.(AA)

David Flees to Ziklag

27 David said to himself, “One of these days I’ll be swept away by Saul. There is nothing better for me than to escape immediately to the land of the Philistines.(AB) Then Saul will give up searching for me everywhere in Israel, and I’ll escape from him.” So David set out with his six hundred men(AC) and went over to Achish son of Maoch,(AD) the king of Gath. David and his men stayed with Achish in Gath. Each man had his family with him,(AE) and David had his two wives: Ahinoam of Jezreel and Abigail of Carmel,(AF) Nabal’s widow. When it was reported to Saul that David had fled to Gath, he no longer searched for him.

Now David said to Achish, “If I have found favor with you, let me be given a place in one of the outlying towns, so I can live there. Why should your servant live in the royal city with you?” That day Achish gave Ziklag(AG) to him, and it still belongs to the kings of Judah today. The length of time that David stayed in Philistine territory amounted to a year and four months.(AH)

David and his men went up and raided the Geshurites,(AI) the Girzites,[b] and the Amalekites.(AJ) From ancient times they had been the inhabitants of the region through Shur(AK) as far as the land of Egypt. Whenever David attacked the land, he did not leave a single person alive, either man or woman, but he took flocks, herds, donkeys, camels, and clothing.(AL) Then he came back to Achish, 10 who inquired, “Where did you raid today?” [c](AM)

David replied, “The south country of Judah,” “The south country of the Jerahmeelites,”(AN) or “The south country of the Kenites.”(AO)

11 David did not let a man or woman live to be brought to Gath, for he said, “Or they will inform on us and say, ‘This is what David did.’” This was David’s custom during the whole time he stayed in the Philistine territory. 12 So Achish trusted David, thinking, “Since he has made himself repulsive to his people Israel, he will be my servant forever.”

Saul and the Medium

28 At that time, the Philistines(AP) gathered their military units into one army to fight against Israel. So Achish said to David, “You know, of course, that you and your men must march out in the army[d] with me.”

David replied to Achish, “Good, you will find out what your servant can do.”

So Achish said to David, “Very well, I will appoint you as my permanent bodyguard.”(AQ)

By this time Samuel had died,(AR) all Israel had mourned for him and buried him in Ramah, his city,(AS) and Saul had removed the mediums and spiritists from the land.(AT) The Philistines gathered and camped at Shunem. So Saul gathered all Israel, and they camped at Gilboa. When Saul saw the Philistine camp, he was afraid and his heart pounded. He inquired of the Lord, but the Lord did not answer him in dreams or by the Urim or by the prophets.(AU) Saul then said to his servants, “Find me a woman who is a medium, so I can go and consult her.”

His servants replied, “There is a woman at En-dor(AV) who is a medium.”(AW)

Saul disguised himself(AX) by putting on different clothes and set out with two of his men. They came to the woman at night, and Saul said, “Consult a spirit for me.(AY) Bring up for me the one I tell you.”(AZ)

But the woman said to him, “You surely know what Saul has done,(BA) how he has cut off the mediums and spiritists from the land. Why are you setting a trap for me to get me killed?”

10 Then Saul swore to her by the Lord: “As surely as the Lord lives, no punishment will come to you[e] from this.”

11 “Who is it that you want me to bring up for you?” the woman asked.

“Bring up Samuel for me,” he answered.

12 When the woman saw Samuel, she screamed, and then she asked Saul, “Why did you deceive me? You are Saul!”

13 But the king said to her, “Don’t be afraid. What do you see?”

“I see a spirit form[f] coming up out of the earth,” the woman answered.

14 Then Saul asked her, “What does he look like?”

“An old man is coming up,” she replied. “He’s wearing a robe.”(BB) Then Saul knew that it was Samuel, and he knelt low with his face to the ground and paid homage.(BC)

15 “Why have you disturbed me by bringing me up?” Samuel asked Saul.

“I’m in serious trouble,” replied Saul. “The Philistines are fighting against me and God has turned away from me.(BD) He doesn’t answer me anymore,(BE) either through the prophets or in dreams. So I’ve called on you to tell me what I should do.”

16 Samuel answered, “Since the Lord has turned away from you and has become your enemy, why are you asking me? 17 The Lord has done[g] exactly what he said through me: The Lord has torn the kingship out of your hand and given it to your neighbor David.(BF) 18 You did not obey the Lord and did not carry out his burning anger against Amalek;(BG) therefore the Lord has done this to you today. 19 The Lord will also hand Israel over to the Philistines along with you. Tomorrow you and your sons will be with me,[h](BH) and the Lord will hand Israel’s army over to the Philistines.”

20 Immediately, Saul fell flat on the ground. He was terrified by Samuel’s words and was also weak because he had not eaten anything all day and all night. 21 The woman came over to Saul, and she saw that he was terrified and said to him, “Look, your servant has obeyed you. I took my life in my hands(BI) and did what you told me to do. 22 Now please listen to your servant. Let me set some food in front of you. Eat and it will give you strength so you can go on your way.”

23 He refused, saying, “I won’t eat,” but when his servants and the woman urged him, he listened to them.(BJ) He got up off the ground and sat on the bed.(BK)

24 The woman had a fattened calf at her house, and she quickly slaughtered it.(BL) She also took flour, kneaded it, and baked unleavened bread. 25 She served it to Saul and his servants, and they ate. Afterward, they got up and left that night.

John 11:1-54

Lazarus Dies at Bethany

11 Now a man was sick, Lazarus from Bethany,(A) the village of Mary and her sister Martha.(B) Mary was the one who anointed the Lord with perfume and wiped his feet with her hair,(C) and it was her brother Lazarus who was sick. So the sisters sent a message to him: “Lord, the one you love is sick.”

When Jesus heard it, he said, “This sickness will not end in death but is for the glory of God,(D) so that the Son of God(E) may be glorified through it.” Now Jesus loved Martha, her sister, and Lazarus. So when he heard that he was sick, he stayed two more days in the place where he was. Then after that, he said to the disciples, “Let’s go to Judea(F) again.”

“Rabbi,”(G) the disciples told him, “just now the Jews tried to stone you,(H) and you’re going there again?”

“Aren’t there twelve hours in a day?” Jesus answered. “If anyone walks during the day, he doesn’t stumble, because he sees the light of this world.(I) 10 But if anyone walks during the night,(J) he does stumble, because the light is not in him.”

11 He said this, and then he told them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep,(K) but I’m on my way to wake him up.”

12 Then the disciples said to him, “Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will get well.”

13 Jesus, however, was speaking about his death, but they thought he was speaking about natural sleep. 14 So Jesus then told them plainly, “Lazarus has died. 15 I’m glad for you that I wasn’t there so that you may believe. But let’s go to him.”

16 Then Thomas(L) (called “Twin”[a]) said to his fellow disciples, “Let’s go too so that we may die with him.”

The Resurrection and the Life

17 When Jesus arrived, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb(M) four days. 18 Bethany was near Jerusalem(N) (less than two miles[b] away). 19 Many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them about their brother.

20 As soon as Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went to meet him, but Mary remained seated in the house. 21 Then Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother wouldn’t have died. 22 Yet even now I know that whatever you ask from God, God will give you.”

23 “Your brother will rise(O) again,” Jesus told her.

24 Martha said to him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.”(P)

25 Jesus said to her, “I am(Q) the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me,(R) even if he dies, will live.(S) 26 Everyone who lives and believes in me will never die.(T) Do you believe this?”

27 “Yes, Lord,” she told him, “I believe you are the Messiah,(U) the Son(V) of God, who comes into the world.”(W)

Jesus Shares the Sorrow of Death

28 Having said this, she went back and called her sister Mary, saying in private, “The Teacher is here and is calling for you.”

29 As soon as Mary heard this, she got up quickly and went to him.(X) 30 Jesus had not yet come into the village but was still in the place where Martha had met him. 31 The Jews who were with her in the house consoling her saw that Mary got up quickly and went out. They followed her, supposing that she was going to the tomb(Y) to cry there.

32 As soon as Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet(Z) and told him, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died!”

33 When Jesus saw her crying, and the Jews who had come with her crying, he was deeply moved[c] in his spirit(AA) and troubled. 34 “Where have you put him?” he asked.

“Lord,” they told him, “come and see.”

35 Jesus wept.(AB)

36 So the Jews said, “See how he loved(AC) him!” 37 But some of them said, “Couldn’t he who opened the blind man’s eyes(AD) also have kept this man from dying?”

The Seventh Sign: Raising Lazarus from the Dead

38 Then Jesus, deeply moved again, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone was lying against it.(AE) 39 “Remove the stone,” Jesus said.

Martha, the dead man’s sister, told him, “Lord, there is already a stench because he has been dead four days.”

40 Jesus said to her, “Didn’t I tell you that if you believed you would see the glory(AF) of God?”(AG)

41 So they removed the stone. Then Jesus raised his eyes and said, “Father, I thank(AH) you that you heard me.(AI) 42 I know that you always hear me, but because of the crowd standing here I said this, so that they may believe you sent(AJ) me.” 43 After he said this, he shouted with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” 44 The dead man came out bound hand and foot with linen strips and with his face wrapped in a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Unwrap him and let him go.”

The Plot to Kill Jesus

45 Therefore, many of the Jews who came to Mary and saw what he did believed in him.(AK) 46 But some of them went to the Pharisees(AL) and told them what Jesus had done.

47 So the chief priests and the Pharisees convened the Sanhedrin(AM) and were saying, “What are we going to do since this man is doing many signs? 48 If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans(AN) will come and take away both our place and our nation.”

49 One of them, Caiaphas,(AO) who was high priest(AP) that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all! 50 You’re not considering that it is to your[d] advantage that one man should die for the people rather than the whole nation perish.”(AQ) 51 He did not say this on his own, but being high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus was going to die(AR) for the nation, 52 and not for the nation only, but also to unite the scattered children(AS) of God. 53 So from that day on they plotted to kill him.(AT)

54 Jesus therefore no longer walked openly(AU) among the Jews but departed from there to the countryside near the wilderness,(AV) to a town called Ephraim, and he stayed there with the disciples.

1 Samuel 20:1-21:15, John 9:1-41, Psalms 113:1-114:8, Proverbs 15:15-17

Today is the 17th day of May. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian. It is pleasure, every day, to be here with you, including today. It’s wonderful to take the next step forward as we move into the latter half or latter days actually of our week. And we’re continuing to move through the back half for the back part of the book of first Samuel, which is where we’ll take our next step forward in the Old Testament today. We’re reading from the Voice Translation this week. First Samuel chapter 20 and 21 today.

Commentary:

Okay. So, as we are rounding the corner on this week and preparing to close it down let’s just take a second to orient ourselves to where we are in and the stories in the old and new Testaments. So, we’ve been watching King Saul and then we saw David enter the story and we saw his rise to prominence and fame, and we’ve also watched Saul’s decline. And, you know, at this point in the story, David is convinced for good reason that Saul, that his actual intention is to assassinate him. And, so, he goes to his friend Jonathan and he’s like, “I swear, I swear I’m only a step away from death. Your dad…your dad is gonna kill me.” And Jonathan didn’t believe this, but he did very quickly learn very soon after that, yeah, in fact, Saul did want to kill David and he learned that for sure because Saul tried to kill his own son, Jonathan. It’s not the first time we’ve seen this kind of behavior out of Saul, even towards his own son. And, so, we…you know…at this point we can’t look at Saul and, not see a man whose kind of gone off the rails even though he has supreme power. It all really boils down to the fear of man, of comparison and trying to get an identity out what people think. This has allowed Saul to move into this jealousy and paranoia and rage. Meanwhile, we’re watching David hold onto God for dear life because there’s like no other way. He has had to grow up so fast and has had to become a warrior, a stealthy warrior so quickly that his instincts are certainly well sharpened. And, so, we see a final meeting between Jonathan and David where Jonathan is accepting the fact that King Saul wants David dead and he’s sending away, and we’ll pick up with the story as we move forward in our next step tomorrow.

So, then we move to the gospel of John and Jesus has healed a man who was blind since the day he was born and he did it again on the Sabbath day and it’s the Sabbath day that has Jesus in so much trouble with these people, with the religious leaders because they have, you know, spent a lot of time arguing with each other about what work is, like, what constitutes work because you’re not supposed to work on the Sabbath day and healing falls into that category. And, so, Jesus on a number of occasions, steps right into the face of that and heals people on the Sabbath day and argues legitimately, like “are you serious?” Like because the Pharisees were like, “this is happening on the Sabbath day, so it must be happening because of the devil”, right? “This man is a sinner because he’s doing this on the Sabbath day.” And this is an ongoing thing with Jesus between the Pharisees. One of the things that has them so irate and so acutely aware that they will not be able to control Jesus and rein him in. I mean the truth is, had they been able to rein Jesus and get just get him to be just like good Orthodox Pharisee, then, I mean they would’ve had a superstar rabbi on their hands. Jesus just, he didn’t come to play that game. It was not his mission to try to find prominence and yet he was able to do all of these miraculous things that were bringing him prominence and bringing envy upon him from the Pharisees. And, so, in the story that we read today, right, this man who was blind from birth sees, he goes to the temple, the Pharisees start asking questions, they’re asking like all kinds of interrogating questions and asking them from all kinds of angles and they draw the man’s parents into the mix to prove he was blind from birth because they believe this is a joke, but everybody around knows this is the man. He was blind from birth, and now he can see. And, so, they’re just after this guy and they throw him out of the synagogue simply because he’s stating the obvious. He’s basically saying, “I don’t know how to judge who a sinner is, that’s your job. You’re the religious elite, like, you spend your life studying this. So, you guys are the ones that get to determine who’s a sinful one. I don’t know whether he’s a sinner or not. I just know I couldn’t see, and I now can see because this person healed me.” So, there’s plenty for us to think about here. Jesus, for sure, messed with the theological understanding of the Pharisees when he healed on the Sabbath repeatedly. And at the same time, nobody could claim that the blind receiving site wasn’t an act of God. So, they were in a theological and in a traditional, like, impasse. And rather than simply acknowledging God’s goodness they fell back on their traditions and in the process denounced God. So, we should understand in this story that there are more types of blindness than just being unable to see the physical sense of light and shape. The Pharisees were also the blind people in this story. They were blind to what God was doing among them because it conflicted with their theological understanding of God. Isn’t funny how this is a recurring theme in the Gospel’s but it’s only usually talked about in terms of the religious elite people, the ones who were theologically students of the Torah, it’s them versus Jesus, we never bring ourselves into the mix. But God is bigger than…He’s bigger than all of the theological understandings that we can construct around him, the scaffolding that we build around him to try to explain what he does and what he doesn’t do in and on how that implicates us. God, at least as we read through the Bible, just care about that so much. Like, he’ll disrupt whatever he wants to disrupt. He will disrupt someone’s understanding anyway he chooses. And yet, this day and age, I mean, we still find ourselves in theological wars. Like we still find ourselves fighting over Jesus and what He’s gonna do, and what He’s not gonna do, and how He’s gonna do it, and who is gonna do it with and why. The theological disagreements that we have with each other, these are…they have purpose if we’re actually digging in and searching for the truth, but they don’t have much value when they’re nothing more than our attempt to be right, right, to be superior, to curate our lives so that it would appear that we’re closer to God. That makes us look a lot more like the Pharisees than it does Jesus. I mean God loves us all. We’re gonna have to learn to do the same thing. Battling over our personal doctrine isn’t going to draw us closer to God. And the funny thing is, at least in my experience, the closer we become to God, the more we realize how little we actually know. And Jesus gives us a beautiful invitation in this story to receive site where we are blind and to begin to know him well beyond our formula.

Prayer:

Jesus, we invite You into that. Holy Spirit come, because so often we turn to theology and doctrine and we look to our leaders to tell us what to do, to tell us what to think and feel and how things work, when You have invited us actually into a personal relationship. It becomes tricky when we’re trying to walk in a personal relationship with You but also trying to know the rules. And this eventually leads us into building walls and walling ourselves and walling everyone else out and it leads to our own pride and our judgment of one another and then our search for an identity by comparison, and all the sudden we find ourselves being a Pharisee and King Saul and we feel like we’re protecting You. And the truth is we’re  protecting our own fears, we’re afraid to be in first person, always on, never off relationship with You because that might mean we have to live by faith, and that most of the time we won’t know if we’re doing the right thing or not, other than just knowing within our hearts that You are leading us forward. And yet that is the beginning of the journey. And we have so many examples from people in the Bible who walked with You and how counterintuitive their journey was and yet we think we can just lay out a grid of theology and doctrine and just have every eventuality accounted for in our lives and then we’re so mad when we’re walking a counterintuitive journey ourselves. Come Holy Spirit, help us to become aware that what You are doing is inviting us into a life of faith and we claim the life of faith every day. And yet the life of faith by default invites us to live beyond what we think we know, it invites us to live inside the realm of mystery beyond what we can control and beyond what we can explain. So, come Holy Spirit, draw us deeper into Jesus today. Lead us on the narrow path that leads to life. Lead us into all truth we pray. In the mighty name of Jesus, we ask. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hi, it’s Sherry from Kansas. I was just listening to the May 15th podcast. Louise, I think you said your name was Louise, you’re from Massachusetts and you’re a senior citizen with an arthritic disability and you’re very much alone, you don’t have any family and you never dreamed that you would end up this way in your latter years, and I want you to know I’m in the same situation as you. I did have some family, but they were the ones that stole from my parents while my parents lay dying. And when I lost my parents I lost that family as well. So, I lost everybody all at once. I want you to know I understand. You’re not alone. There are people, other people like you and I in this world and I just want you…I just want to pray for you right now. Father, I lift up Louise before You and I ask You Father to give her the sense of Your presence Father and to let her know she’s never ever, ever, ever alone and Father that this entire Daily Audio Bible family will be praying for her. But I pray Father that You will connect her with someone, maybe a caregiver that comes to visit or someone in the area where she lives if she’s in an apartment building, but God I just lift her up to You and I ask that You give bring her someone God, a companion, a friend and that she also would know that You are her friend as well and God that You will move heaven and earth on her behalf Lord. Father, I thank You for it and I just pray for her to be encouraged and Lord I ask that You lift Your spirit and Father that joy would just come and I thank You for…

Hello this is Joyful Noise from Southern California. This call is for Just a College Student. I was blown away about how you introduced yourself and there is no “just” because you’re also child of God. And, you know, I just wanted to share with you how compelling your story was because you…you didn’t make any rationalizations when you asked for prayer. You said a sinful relationship or sexual sinful relationship that “I” started. You took complete ownership. That’s confession. And, so, do you know, Just a College Student, that God promises that He separates that sin from us as far is the east is from the west and you now have forgiveness. And, so, you have confessed your sin to…to the church, the Daily Audio Bible, right, and you confessed to God at the same time. And, so, therefore you’re on your way to healing. I wanted to share that with you and just what an encouragement. And just know that, you know, the kids that you will be ministering to at the summer camp, the Christian camp that you’re worried about attending, just know that they are also struggling with sin and that you, perhaps, may have a ministry or maybe somebody that you come across that you meet that is struggling with something similar. And then just know that, you know, God’s gonna use that. He’s uses all of our sins for His greater glory, doesn’t he? So, just know that you’re going to be perfectly positioned and it’s preordained by God that you going to be there. I also just really want to reiterate what you said, which is that I don’t know where I would be without the Daily Audio Bible community either, me either brother. I just want to share, Brian, you’ve been such a blessing and you shared, right around the end of March or early April, you shared that at any given moment someone is listening to and praying for…

Hi DAB family, this is Eric from Massachusetts it’s Wednesday, May 15th. This morning on the DAB I heard two people call. One of them was from the college student from Indiana struggling with sexual sin. Yeah, I know exactly where you’ve been. And, so, I want to pray for you and the next call was a lady from Massachusetts that actually moved from Indiana to Massachusetts last year. And this lady from Massachusetts is older and lonely and I get that too. So, I want to pray for both of you. Holy Spirit, Lord I ask that You come down on these two people, this Young man in college in Indiana. I want to pray for him Lord that he seeks Your face and that he asks for help within his church community, within the people around him that he’s vulnerable and he’s willing to share what’s going on in this life Lord. I pray that he would find strength and power in Your mighty name Jesus. I also pray for this woman I think her name was Eileen from Massachusetts whose lonely. I understand. I live in Massachusetts. If you’re anywhere around the Framingham area, please reach out to me and I’ll come and visit you. My email is erchurch@protonmail.com. Lovely you family. Take care.

This calls for a college student __. Brother I’m praying for you and the bondage that you are in. You are not alone. Don’t forget that. I would encourage you to really be in prayer to whether you should go to this summer thing because it sounds like…like it could not be a good thing. I don’t know what…what it is but you did not sound like you were ready to go do that man. But really, really pray on that and think about that. Lean into God. I’ll be praying for you. Keep us updated. We all love you and are praying for you. Alright. Bye.

1 Samuel 24-25

David Spares Saul

24 When Saul returned from pursuing the Philistines,(A) he was told, “David is in the wilderness near En-gedi.”(B) So Saul took three thousand of Israel’s fit young men(C) and went to look for David and his men in front of the Rocks of the Wild Goats. When Saul came to the sheep pens along the road, a cave was there, and he went in to relieve himself.[a](D) David and his men were staying in the recesses of the cave,(E) so they said to him, “Look, this is the day the Lord told you about: ‘I will hand your enemy over to you so you can do to him whatever you desire.’” Then David got up and secretly cut off the corner of Saul’s robe.

Afterward, David’s conscience bothered[b](F) him because he had cut off the corner of Saul’s robe.[c] He said to his men, “I swear before the Lord: I would never do such a thing to my lord, the Lord’s anointed.(G) I will never lift my hand against him, since he is the Lord’s anointed.”(H) With these words David persuaded[d] his men, and he did not let them rise up against Saul.

Then Saul left the cave and went on his way. After that, David got up, went out of the cave, and called to Saul, “My lord the king!” When Saul looked behind him, David knelt low with his face to the ground and paid homage.(I) David said to Saul, “Why do you listen to the words of people who say, ‘Look, David intends to harm you’? 10 You can see with your own eyes that the Lord handed you over to me today in the cave.(J) Someone advised me to kill you,(K) but I[e][f] took pity on you and said: I won’t lift my hand against my lord, since he is the Lord’s anointed. 11 Look, my father!(L) Look at the corner of your robe in my hand, for I cut it off, but I didn’t kill you. Recognize[g] that I’ve committed no crime or rebellion. I haven’t sinned against you even though you are hunting me down to take my life.(M)

12 “May the Lord judge between me and you, and may the Lord take vengeance on you for me, but my hand will never be against you.(N) 13 As the old proverb says, ‘Wickedness comes from wicked people.’(O) My hand will never be against you. 14 Who has the king of Israel come after? What are you chasing after? A dead dog? A single flea?(P) 15 May the Lord be judge and decide between you and me. May he take notice and plead my case and deliver[h] me from you.”(Q)

16 When David finished saying these things to him, Saul replied, “Is that your voice, David my son?” (R) Then Saul wept aloud 17 and said to David, “You are more righteous than I, for you have done what is good to me though I have done what is evil to you.(S) 18 You yourself have told me today what good you did for me: when the Lord handed me over to you, you didn’t kill me.(T) 19 When a man finds his enemy, does he let him go unharmed?[i](U) May the Lord repay you with good for what you’ve done for me today.

20 “Now I know for certain you will be king, and the kingdom of Israel will be established[j] in your hand.(V) 21 Therefore swear to me by the Lord that you will not cut off my descendants or wipe out my name from my father’s family.”(W) 22 So David swore to Saul. Then Saul went back home, and David and his men went up to the stronghold.(X)

David, Nabal, and Abigail

25 Samuel died,(Y) and all Israel assembled to mourn for him,(Z) and they buried him by his home in Ramah.(AA) David then went down to the Wilderness of Paran.[k](AB)

A man in Maon(AC) had a business in Carmel;(AD) he was a very rich man with three thousand sheep and one thousand goats and was shearing his sheep in Carmel. The man’s name was Nabal, and his wife’s name, Abigail. The woman was intelligent and beautiful, but the man, a Calebite,(AE) was harsh and evil in his dealings.

While David was in the wilderness, he heard that Nabal was shearing sheep, so David sent ten young men instructing them, “Go up to Carmel, and when you come to Nabal, greet him[l] in my name. Then say this: ‘Long life to you,[m] and peace to you, peace to your family, and peace to all that is yours.(AF) I hear that you are shearing.[n] When your shepherds were with us, we did not harass them, and nothing of theirs was missing the whole time they were in Carmel.(AG) Ask your young men, and they will tell you. So let my young men find favor with you, for we have come on a feast[o] day.(AH) Please give whatever you have on hand to your servants and to your son David.’”

David’s young men went and said all these things to Nabal on David’s behalf,[p] and they waited.[q] 10 Nabal asked them, “Who is David?(AI) Who is Jesse’s son? Many slaves these days are running away from their masters. 11 Am I supposed to take my bread, my water, and my meat that I butchered for my shearers and give them to these men? I don’t know where they are from.”

12 David’s young men retraced their steps. When they returned to him, they reported all these words. 13 He said to his men, “All of you, put on your swords!” So each man put on his sword, and David also put on his sword. About four hundred men followed David while two hundred stayed with the supplies.(AJ)

14 One of Nabal’s young men informed Abigail, Nabal’s wife: “Look, David sent messengers from the wilderness to greet our master,(AK) but he screamed at them. 15 The men treated us very well. When we were in the field, we weren’t harassed(AL) and nothing of ours was missing the whole time we were living among them. 16 They were a wall around us, both day and night,(AM) the entire time we were with them herding the sheep. 17 Now consider carefully[r] what you should do, because there is certain to be trouble for our master and his entire family. He is such a worthless fool nobody can talk to him!”

18 Abigail hurried, taking two hundred loaves of bread, two clay jars of wine, five butchered sheep, a bushel[s] of roasted grain, one hundred clusters of raisins, and two hundred cakes of pressed figs, and loaded them on donkeys.(AN) 19 Then she said to her male servants, “Go ahead of me. I will be right behind you.”(AO) But she did not tell her husband Nabal.

20 As she rode the donkey down a mountain pass hidden from view, she saw David and his men coming toward her and met them. 21 David had just said, “I guarded everything that belonged to this man in the wilderness for nothing. He was not missing anything, yet he paid me back evil for good. 22 May God punish me[t] and do so severely(AP) if I let any of his males[u] survive until morning.”(AQ)

23 When Abigail saw David, she quickly got off the donkey and knelt down with her face to the ground and paid homage to David.(AR) 24 She knelt at his feet and said, “The guilt is mine, my lord, but please let your servant speak to you directly. Listen to the words of your servant. 25 My lord should pay no attention to this worthless fool Nabal, for he lives up to his name:[v] His name means ‘stupid,’ and stupidity is all he knows.[w] I, your servant, didn’t see my lord’s young men whom you sent. 26 Now my lord, as surely as the Lord lives and as you yourself live— it is the Lord who kept you from participating in bloodshed and avenging yourself(AS) by your own hand—may your enemies and those who intend to harm my lord be like Nabal.(AT) 27 Let this gift(AU) your servant has brought to my lord be given to the young men who follow my lord. 28 Please forgive your servant’s offense,(AV) for the Lord is certain to make a lasting dynasty for my lord(AW) because he fights the Lord’s battles.(AX) Throughout your life, may evil[x] not be found in you.(AY)

29 “Someone is pursuing you and intends to take your life. My lord’s life is tucked safely in the place[y] where the Lord your God protects the living, but he is flinging away your enemies’ lives like stones from a sling.(AZ) 30 When the Lord does for my lord all the good he promised you and appoints you ruler over Israel,(BA) 31 there will not be remorse or a troubled conscience for my lord because of needless bloodshed or my lord’s revenge. And when the Lord does good things for my lord, may you remember me your servant.”(BB)

32 Then David said to Abigail, “Blessed be the Lord God of Israel,(BC) who sent you to meet me today! 33 May your discernment be blessed, and may you be blessed. Today you kept me from participating in bloodshed and avenging myself by my own hand.(BD) 34 Otherwise, as surely as the Lord God of Israel lives, who prevented me from harming you, if you had not come quickly to meet me, Nabal wouldn’t have had any males[z] left by morning light.” 35 Then David accepted what she had brought him and said, “Go home in peace.(BE) See, I have heard what you said and have granted your request.”(BF)

36 Then Abigail went to Nabal, and there he was in his house, holding a feast fit for a king.(BG) Nabal’s heart was cheerful,[aa] and he was very drunk, so she didn’t say anything[ab] to him(BH) until morning light.

37 In the morning when Nabal sobered up,[ac] his wife told him about these events. His heart died[ad] and he became a stone. 38 About ten days later, the Lord struck Nabal dead.(BI)

39 When David heard that Nabal was dead, he said, “Blessed be the Lord who championed my cause against Nabal’s insults(BJ) and restrained his servant from doing evil.(BK) The Lord brought Nabal’s evil deeds back on his own head.”(BL)

Then David sent messengers to speak to Abigail about marrying him. 40 When David’s servants came to Abigail at Carmel, they said to her, “David sent us to bring you to him as a wife.”

41 She stood up, paid homage with her face to the ground,(BM) and said, “Here I am, your servant, a slave to wash the feet of my lord’s servants.”(BN) 42 Then Abigail got up quickly, and with her five female servants accompanying her, rode on the donkey following David’s messengers.(BO) And so she became his wife.

43 David also married Ahinoam of Jezreel,(BP) and the two of them became his wives. 44 But Saul gave his daughter Michal, David’s wife, to Palti(BQ) son of Laish, who was from Gallim.(BR)

John 10:22-42

Jesus at the Festival of Dedication

22 Then the Festival of Dedication took place in Jerusalem, and it was winter. 23 Jesus was walking in the temple in Solomon’s Colonnade.(A) 24 The Jews surrounded him and asked, “How long are you going to keep us in suspense?[a] If you are the Messiah,(B) tell us plainly.”[b](C)

25 “I did tell you and you don’t believe,” Jesus answered them. “The works(D) that I do in my Father’s name testify about me. 26 But you don’t believe because you are not of my sheep.[c](E) 27 My sheep hear my voice, I know them, and they follow me. 28 I give them eternal life,(F) and they will never perish.(G) No one will snatch(H) them out of my hand. 29 My Father,(I) who has given them to me, is greater than all. No one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand. 30 I and the Father are one.”(J)

Renewed Efforts to Stone Jesus

31 Again the Jews picked up rocks to stone him.(K)

32 Jesus replied, “I have shown you many good works(L) from the Father. For which of these works are you stoning me?”

33 “We aren’t stoning(M) you for a good work,” the Jews answered, “but for blasphemy, because you—being a man—make yourself God.”

34 Jesus answered them, “Isn’t it written in your law,[d] I said, you are gods?[e](N) 35 If he called those whom the word(O) of God came to ‘gods’—and the Scripture(P) cannot be broken— 36 do you say, ‘You are blaspheming’ to the one the Father set apart and sent into the world, because I said: I am the Son of God?(Q) 37 If I am not doing my Father’s works,(R) don’t believe me. 38 But if I am doing them and you don’t believe me, believe the works. This way you will know and understand[f] that the Father is in me and I in the Father.”(S) 39 Then they were trying again to seize him,(T) but he eluded their grasp.(U)

Many beyond the Jordan Believe in Jesus

40 So he departed again across the Jordan(V) to the place where John(W) had been baptizing earlier, and he remained there. 41 Many came to him(X) and said, “John never did a sign, but everything John said about this man was true.” 42 And many believed in him there.

Psalm 116

Psalm 116

Thanks to God for Deliverance

I love the Lord because he has heard
my appeal for mercy.(A)
Because he has turned his ear to me,
I will call out to him as long as I live.(B)

The ropes of death were wrapped around me,
and the torments of Sheol overcame me;
I encountered trouble and sorrow.(C)
Then I called on the name of the Lord:
Lord, save me!” (D)

The Lord is gracious and righteous;
our God is compassionate.(E)
The Lord guards the inexperienced;
I was helpless, and he saved me.(F)
Return to your rest, my soul,
for the Lord has been good to you.(G)
For you, Lord, rescued me from death,
my eyes from tears,
