Deuteronomy 32:28-52, Luke 12:35-59, Psalms 78:56-64, Proverbs 12:24

Today is the 8th day of April. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian and it is always, always, always a pleasure and a joy to come around the global campfire together with you and all of our brothers and sisters wrapped around the world and take the next step forward in the Scriptures, And, so, as we launch into this workweek we’ll go back into the book of Deuteronomy and as I’ve been mentioning we only have a few days left in the book of Deuteronomy so we’re kind of coming to the end of the era of Moses and we’ll be doing that over the next couple of days. And right now, since we’ll be picking up in the middle of it, we’re in the middle of a song that Moses is teaching to the people. Deuteronomy 32:28-52.

Commentary:

Alright. So, in our reading from the Gospel of Luke today Jesus is essentially discussing vigilance and its importance not only toward God, but also over our own souls over our own lives. And, so, the example of a master who has gone away and servants who are left in charge is an obvious metaphor for our own lives and it’s the ones who we’re waiting right, the ones who were waiting for the master to return so that they could serve him, so that everything would be ready for when he came back no matter what time of day or night and that he came back. Those were the ones that the master would actually in turn serve, but we also must be vigilant in our own lives so that we can see the present time that we’re in so that we can properly discern what’s going on around us. And this can be on a cosmic scale like, where are we on the continuum of human history, but this is much more immediate. We make a lot fewer poor bad unhealthy choices when we have been vigilant enough to choose wisely in advance, right? When we’re in the heat of the moment and forced to make a critical decision, we often make the wrong decision, it often sends us down the wrong path. But if we had been vigilant, if we had been maintaining our lives, allowing our lives to shrink down to what is maintainable then we would be able to be vigilant about the choices and decisions that we have to make because we wouldn’t be living from crisis to crisis, over obligation to over obligation where we always feel like were pinned against the wall. What if there were space? And what if that space is actually freedom to live? And we do this in our lives when we find things to be important enough. So, for example, you know, Jill and I have had a number of children and when it’s time for the baby to come and not that there’s a new baby going to be coming, we’re done with babies, we’re ready for a grandbaby, but when it’s time for the baby to come there is a bag packed, it’s just sitting there, nothings coming in or out of it, it’s just sitting there and when the time comes you grab the bag and go, you’re ready for the moment, you’ve been vigilant in preparing for something you know is going to come and you need to make decisions in advance because in the heat of the moment it’s not the proper time. So, we know how to be vigilant we’re just invited to be vigilant about our life with God. And we can’t always be prepared for His presence or be prepared to work on His behalf in the mission that He’s sent us upon if our lives are so pegged to the wall, turned up to 11, so noisy that there is no space to do anything but read act. What we’re being invited into, this idea of vigilance, is that we don’t have to react, we can be proactive in our lives maintaining a proper posture and a proper awareness of what’s going on around us. And then we can live intentionally. And then we can live free. So, Jesus said, “a faithful, sensible servant is one to whom the master can give the responsibility of managing his other household servants and feeding them.” So, what does that look like in your life? Are we people that the master can entrust the responsibilities of managing His kingdom? If not, then there’s work to do because this is what we are supposed to be growing up into and the place to start would be to be vigilant about maintaining what God has already entrusted to us. That would be the place to start.

Prayer:

Holy Spirit, we invite You into that. And we do confess, our culture and our society is all about having a life that is absolutely full of products and services that we’ve been marketed. So, we get on the hamster wheel and just start running and before You know it 20 years have gone by and we’re overextended and over obligated and we just wonder when life might begin when here in this season of Lent maybe You are inviting us to begin that life now by examining all of the things that really don’t need to be in our lives, that really are not in any way drawing us closer to You or giving us any kind of freedom whatsoever. They’re just simply stealing time from us. And if our time can be stolen from us, well then that’s stealing our life. So, come Holy Spirit into this, show us how to be vigilant, awake, and aware of Your movements and Your presence in our lives and what it means to the way we live that life. Maybe we don’t need all of this stuff in our lives anymore. Maybe what we need is space and freedom. Come Holy Spirit and show us what that looks like to each of us in our own expression and in our own story. We love You and we trust You and we seek You and we pray these things in the name of Jesus, our Savior. Amen.

We are in the process of raising a canopy of prayer over the forthcoming More Gathering for women that will be taking place in just a couple of days this…beginning this Thursday. And, so we pray over the travel of all of the women, we pray over health, over stamina, over technology, over whether, over everything and just follow the Lord’s guide as your remembering and praying for your sisters who will be at the More Gathering in just a few days. And yeah, like I said yesterday, we want a bubble over that mountain where the Holy Spirit’s presence is profoundly experienced and everything that would be a distraction is kept away, that’s our prayer. And, so, thank you for joining your hearts in that prayer over this coming event

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hey Daily Audio Bible, it’s Kevin calling from New Hampshire. I was calling in to report a little miracle that occurred in my life recently. My sisters been homeless and has been struggling for about two years now recently she let me know that she may be getting an apartment with her boyfriend with the help of a homeless assistance program in Concord. After I heard about this I asked my girlfriend that night to pray with me for her and she agreed. Two days later I received word from my sister that a pastor had walked down to her tent in the woods and said he was sent by Jesus to tell her your life is about to get better and that things will change. This brought me to tears after hearing this and all I could think is like in the Bible when it says, two or three pray in his name he will be there. Now she’s going to be attending church with me next Sunday and I’m very happy for this. I’m just asking everyone out there to send prayers to the homeless. If they may find some good in their hearts to maybe donate to the homeless that would be helpful too but any prayers or whatever you can do I’d be grateful for that. I take time out of my day to help give to them and they have it a lot worse off most of us out there. So, yeah, I just want to report that little miracle. I think it’s amazing how quickly that happened, just came out of nowhere. So, thank you guys. Have a blessed day. Bye.

Hi, yeah, it’s Michael from London England UK. Today is Thursday, the 4th of April. Yeah, I just wanted to call in response to the woman I heard, I can’t remember what her name was but you said that you had a husband called Bob who’s got muscular dystrophy and also that he’s not a Christian but he’s at least an agnostic. And I just wanted to pray for him right now because I am also, you know, I’m an occupational therapist, I work in mental health, but I guess muscular dystrophy is, you know, a serious medical condition but an area of my training. So, Father, I pray for Bob. I pray that You would heal him from the top of his head to the tip of his toe, that You would restore him to full health and You’d stop this muscular dystrophy from taking over his health condition and reducing his life expectancy. And Father I pray ultimately for his heart, for a heart transformation, that You would use his wife to just love on him and show him how much You care for him for his relationship with his wife and that through that he would be…his heart would be openly receptive to hear how much You love him and ultimately in doing so come to church and maybe even become a Christian. And Father God I pray for that relationship Father God and I know that relationship things come a lot as well, but it’s quite difficult. And we ask that You would…that You would really help us because I…this is a prayer request for myself actually. Yeah, it’s just difficult at the moment, you know, hurting from yet another relationship. Two girls broken up with me __ for emotional stability. Yeah, and it’s a hard thing and it is difficult, and it is painful. Yeah, so I just ask for prayer in that. Okay. Speak soon. Bye.

Hi everybody, it’s Margo from Australia still in Uganda. I was going to ring up and pray but I’m actually praying for quite a few people at the moment, so I thought…I just want to let some people know that I’m praying for you. I know sometimes when you hear you name it can be encouraging and I just want you to know, Kelly from Australia struggling with sobriety. I just want to know I’m praying for you that must be such a hard battle. His little Cherry just for your daughter with the veterinary school application. Praying that she will have favor and that God’s will be done her life. Susie from Colorado, with the kids in Haiti. Gosh, that sounds really difficult. I am praying for you, that the Lord will give you the most amazing strength. Pelham and Molly, praying for you guys. Hang in there Pelham, don’t give up. Mary whose husband committed infidelity and doesn’t know what to do, I’m praying for your heart my beautiful sister. Remember how much He loves you and He see’s you. I’m praying for you. Ruben from Canada your son Micah had a medical school interview on the 23rd, I’ve been praying for that. We need Christian doctors. Amen. There was a lady who called asking for prayer for a relationship. She found something that broke her heart, needs a job to get back on her feet. I’m so sorry you had to go through that. Don’t be too hard on yourself, you are human. We love you, we’re praying for you. Friend of God your brother-in-law decided he’s a woman. I’m praying for your sister and her children and for that man that the Lord would just…just work in his heart and just show him the truth and help them through this dreadful situation. That’s all I’ve got time for to say today. Love you all heaps. Bye.

Good morning Daily Audio Bible family this is Bridget from New York City. I’m calling for the woman who is struggling between her husband and the godly man. First and foremost, I just want to share with you, a godly man would not be having conversations with you on the side, hidden. Please block that person. I’m giving you this from a place of experience. Second of all, I’ve been married for 23 years and what the Lord showed me was that there was a lot of unresolved things in my heart between me and my husband and I don’t know if your husband is a Christian or not or what’s going on with him but I ended up doing…and this is after the pain…I ended up confessing all of my sin to my husband. We took a night, we went to a hotel room, and we just both sat there, and we confessed everything. We’ve been together 23 years, we both have been hurt, we’ve both been injured, we’ve both been through so much and we’ve hurt each other through the process of, you know, growing up. I’m 45 my husband’s 43 and it’s…it’s just been…after that…it’s been a beautiful ride. God has been restoring what the enemy intended to harm. So, I don’t know if this is something that you can do. What I do know is that the heart is evil as Terry says and if another man is trying to entice you or is your heart then that says that there’s stuff in your heart that needs to be broken. And, you know, come before the Lord with that and prayerfully bring it to you husband. Okay? God bless you and I pray that everything works out well. God, bless. Bye-bye.

Deuteronomy 31:1-32:27, Luke 12:8-34, Psalms 78:32-55, Proverbs 12:21-23

Today is the 7th day of April. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian. It is a pleasure to be here with you as we collectively reach out and turn the knob and push open the door and step into a brand-new week together. And…oh…the changing of the seasons is a nice thing. It can be erratic, right? But so, can the changing of the seasons in our lives. And, so, it’s nice to see change happening around us, a new life being formed here in the northern hemisphere. I realize that those of you in the southern hemisphere are moving your way into autumn, but that’s also a beautiful change of seasons. And, so, anyway, it’s a pleasure to be here with you now in all of it. So, as we move into this new week we’ll read from a new translation. This week, The New International Version. And we’re still working our way through the book of Deuteronomy, which is the final things that Moses has to say to the children of Israel before he disappears into history, he leaves, goes up Mount Moab, sees the holy land, the promised land, and then he dies, and Joshua will lead to people forward. But here we are listening to Moses say the final things he needs to say, and we will conclude that, we will conclude the book of Deuteronomy this week. But now, Deuteronomy chapter 31 verse 1 through 32 verse 27.

Prayer:

Thank You, Father for Your word and as we step into this new week we take it all to heart. We are reminded that yesterday as we closed the week down You counseled us to choose life, that the path had been set before us - blessing and life or death and cursing. And we get to choose. And, so, we invited Your Holy Spirit to help us with that choice. And today as we begin this week we are counseled by Jesus our Savior that there is nothing to worry about. All we have to do is seek the kingdom first and everything else will be taken care of. And again, we invite Your Holy Spirit into that. Show us all of the distractions as we continue through this season of Lent as we are surrendering everything in our lives, giving all to You and asking You to rearrange the priorities of our lives taking out whatever doesn’t need to be there inserting whatever does and ordering it properly. Help us to understand that what You told us Jesus is true, all of the worry, all of the anxiety isn’t adding a single day to our life, it isn’t doing anything, but if we would humble ourselves, seek Your kingdom first, and not worry we could actually be choosing life. So, help us do this in this coming week we ask. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

It’s just a matter of days before we will begin the More Gathering for women, so the thank You for Your prayers, a canopy of prayers is what we’re asking for, that that mountain be encased in a bubble of prayer surrounded by the prayers of God’s people, so that the Holy Spirit may move freely and effectively causing rapid and irreversible change in lives that are coming to this mountaintop. So, we thank You for Your prayers over that.

I remind You again that, even though we’ve come back from our pilgrimage to the land of the Bible for this year there is another one coming up in 2020. Registration is open for that and You can find out all about it at dailyaudiobible.com in the Initiatives section. Just look for Israel 2020.

If You want to partner with the Daily Audio Bible, You can do that at dailyaudiobible.com as well. Community Prayer and Praise:

Hi, this is Sherry Running Desperately to God. Brian, on March 28th of 2019, he made a profound statement that just blew me away. He said the way we can stay on the narrow path that leads to life is to fall in love with God. The rules and the regulations of our faith shows the outer boundaries. We can go outside those boundaries, but it will lead to destruction but the deeper we fall in love with God and deeper the intimacy grows the rules are less we think about because we don’t want to be inward outside his presence. God owes us nothing and every day that I get up and exhale praise needs to be on my lips. Thanks everyone. Love you.

Good morning from Houston, my name is Victoria Grace, I’m a first-time caller, this is actually my first year listening too, it’s already been life-changing. So, thank you Brian and Jill for the work that you’re doing for us. I know it’s a huge undertaking and definitely requires a lot of sacrifices. So, thank you. I wanted to call to ask for a little bit of prayer for myself. March 31st, I found out that my biological father passed away and I’d never met him in all my 23 years but it was something that I wanted to do. On Friday I was actually talking to my brother and I said, you know, I want you to come with me to meet him this summer and that was the plan that we were making together but two days later he passed away. So, I guess it wasn’t in God’s plan but that’s hard because it was in mine…so. I haven’t really told anybody. So, I just felt that this would be the best way to reach out and get some support. So, maybe if you could just lift me up to God and ask him for emotional healing and peace and strength to get through this because it’s bringing up a lot of hurt and pain and regret and shame. So, if you could just say a quick prayer for me that would be great. Again, thank you so much. My name is Victoria Grace out of Houston. I love you all. Have a lovely day. Bye-bye.

Good morning family, it’s Mary Lynn in New Brunswick and I’m calling specifically this morning for a sister in the Pacific northwest…I was so blessed…I’m not sure her name was __. My dear sister, you’re struggling with your marriage and temptations that are completely and totally from the pit of hell and I’m calling you because I’ve been there. I’ve felt those feelings and I know how strong those temptations can be but unless you are resolved in your commitment to your marriage and not only to your marriage but for me it’s never been so much about being committed to my husband, a person, but it’s being committed to Jesus Christ since the sacrifice that He had made for us. I would never cheat on my husband even when I’m tempted, even when I’m unhappy, even when somebody else comes wearing those sheep’s clothing and presents themselves as…as…you know…my dream and it’s happened. I would never cross that line because I’m not cheating on my husband, I’m cheating on Christ. And so, my heart breaks for you and I’m not condemning you. I want you to hear this in love. The Lord says in first Peter 21, “wives in the same way submit yourselves to your own husband so that if any of them do not believe the word they may be won over not by word by the behavior of their wives. My sweet sister, you have a very difficult but eternally consequential decision in front of you and I am pleading with you to make the right one and this is my suggestion to you all contact all conversation all thought…

Hello everyone, my name is Patrina and I’m so excited to have the opportunity to call in today. I have been listening to the Daily Audio Bible for a few years now, I think since 2015 but today is the first time that I’m calling in. I’m so glad I have the opportunity to do this. The main reason I want to call is I would like to take a moment to just lift up all those that are feeling sick in spirit, all those that are sick in body. I just want to take a moment to lift up all those that have called about cancers or have called about different types of illnesses and those that haven’t called in. So, let’s pray. Father God I just want to take a moment to thank You for who You are. I just praise Your name that we have the opportunity to come into Your presence. I just want to praise You and worship You. And Father God I thank You that You’re a God that answers our prayers, that You’re a God that listens to each and every one of us wherever we are in the world. Father God I just want to pray that You lift up Your healing touch onto those that are sick, those that are sick in body, those that are dealing with illnesses, those that are sick in spirit. Father God. I just want to pray that You give Your healing touch to each and every one of them, that Father God You just beat them at their point of need, that Father God You meet them and that You heal them in the mighty name of Jesus we pray. Amen.

and their doom rushes upon them.(Q)

36 The Lord will vindicate his people(R)
and relent(S) concerning his servants(T)
when he sees their strength is gone
and no one is left, slave(U) or free.[a]
37 He will say: “Now where are their gods,
the rock they took refuge in,(V)
38 the gods who ate the fat of their sacrifices
and drank the wine of their drink offerings?(W)
Let them rise up to help you!
Let them give you shelter!

39 “See now that I myself am he!(X)
There is no god besides me.(Y)
I put to death(Z) and I bring to life,(AA)
I have wounded and I will heal,(AB)
and no one can deliver out of my hand.(AC)
40 I lift my hand(AD) to heaven and solemnly swear:
As surely as I live forever,(AE)
41 when I sharpen my flashing sword(AF)
and my hand grasps it in judgment,
I will take vengeance(AG) on my adversaries
and repay those who hate me.(AH)
42 I will make my arrows drunk with blood,(AI)
while my sword devours flesh:(AJ)
the blood of the slain and the captives,
the heads of the enemy leaders.”

43 Rejoice,(AK) you nations, with his people,[b][c]
for he will avenge the blood of his servants;(AL)
he will take vengeance on his enemies(AM)
and make atonement for his land and people.(AN)

44 Moses came with Joshua[d](AO) son of Nun and spoke all the words of this song in the hearing of the people. 45 When Moses finished reciting all these words to all Israel, 46 he said to them, “Take to heart all the words I have solemnly declared to you this day,(AP) so that you may command(AQ) your children to obey carefully all the words of this law. 47 They are not just idle words for you—they are your life.(AR) By them you will live long(AS) in the land you are crossing the Jordan to possess.”

Moses to Die on Mount Nebo

48 On that same day the Lord told Moses,(AT) 49 “Go up into the Abarim(AU) Range to Mount Nebo(AV) in Moab, across from Jericho,(AW) and view Canaan,(AX) the land I am giving the Israelites as their own possession. 50 There on the mountain that you have climbed you will die(AY) and be gathered to your people, just as your brother Aaron died(AZ) on Mount Hor(BA) and was gathered to his people. 51 This is because both of you broke faith with me in the presence of the Israelites at the waters of Meribah Kadesh(BB) in the Desert of Zin(BC) and because you did not uphold my holiness among the Israelites.(BD) 52 Therefore, you will see the land only from a distance;(BE) you will not enter(BF) the land I am giving to the people of Israel.”

Luke 12:35-59

Watchfulness(A)(B)

35 “Be dressed ready for service and keep your lamps burning, 36 like servants waiting for their master to return from a wedding banquet, so that when he comes and knocks they can immediately open the door for him. 37 It will be good for those servants whose master finds them watching when he comes.(C) Truly I tell you, he will dress himself to serve, will have them recline at the table and will come and wait on them.(D) 38 It will be good for those servants whose master finds them ready, even if he comes in the middle of the night or toward daybreak. 39 But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what hour the thief(E) was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into. 40 You also must be ready,(F) because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.”

41 Peter asked, “Lord, are you telling this parable to us, or to everyone?”

42 The Lord(G) answered, “Who then is the faithful and wise manager, whom the master puts in charge of his servants to give them their food allowance at the proper time? 43 It will be good for that servant whom the master finds doing so when he returns. 44 Truly I tell you, he will put him in charge of all his possessions. 45 But suppose the servant says to himself, ‘My master is taking a long time in coming,’ and he then begins to beat the other servants, both men and women, and to eat and drink and get drunk. 46 The master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he is not aware of.(H) He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the unbelievers.

47 “The servant who knows the master’s will and does not get ready or does not do what the master wants will be beaten with many blows.(I) 48 But the one who does not know and does things deserving punishment will be beaten with few blows.(J) From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.

Not Peace but Division(K)

49 “I have come to bring fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled! 50 But I have a baptism(L) to undergo, and what constraint I am under until it is completed!(M) 51 Do you think I came to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but division. 52 From now on there will be five in one family divided against each other, three against two and two against three. 53 They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.”(N)

Interpreting the Times

54 He said to the crowd: “When you see a cloud rising in the west, immediately you say, ‘It’s going to rain,’ and it does.(O) 55 And when the south wind blows, you say, ‘It’s going to be hot,’ and it is. 56 Hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky. How is it that you don’t know how to interpret this present time?(P)

57 “Why don’t you judge for yourselves what is right? 58 As you are going with your adversary to the magistrate, try hard to be reconciled on the way, or your adversary may drag you off to the judge, and the judge turn you over to the officer, and the officer throw you into prison.(Q) 59 I tell you, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny.”(R)

Psalm 78:56-64

56 But they put God to the test
and rebelled against the Most High;
they did not keep his statutes.
57 Like their ancestors(A) they were disloyal and faithless,
as unreliable as a faulty bow.(B)
58 They angered him(C) with their high places;(D)
they aroused his jealousy with their idols.(E)
59 When God heard(F) them, he was furious;(G)
he rejected Israel(H) completely.
60 He abandoned the tabernacle of Shiloh,(I)
the tent he had set up among humans.(J)
61 He sent the ark of his might(K) into captivity,(L)
his splendor into the hands of the enemy.
62 He gave his people over to the sword;(M)
he was furious with his inheritance.(N)
63 Fire consumed(O) their young men,

64 their priests were put to the sword,(Q)
and their widows could not weep.

Deuteronomy 31:1-32:27

Joshua to Succeed Moses

31 Then Moses went out and spoke these words to all Israel: “I am now a hundred and twenty years old(A) and I am no longer able to lead you.(B) The Lord has said to me, ‘You shall not cross the Jordan.’(C) The Lord your God himself will cross(D) over ahead of you.(E) He will destroy these nations(F) before you, and you will take possession of their land. Joshua also will cross(G) over ahead of you, as the Lord said. And the Lord will do to them what he did to Sihon and Og,(H) the kings of the Amorites, whom he destroyed along with their land. The Lord will deliver(I) them to you, and you must do to them all that I have commanded you. Be strong and courageous.(J) Do not be afraid or terrified(K) because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you;(L) he will never leave you(M) nor forsake(N) you.”

Then Moses summoned Joshua and said(O) to him in the presence of all Israel, “Be strong and courageous, for you must go with this people into the land that the Lord swore to their ancestors to give them,(P) and you must divide it among them as their inheritance. The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you;(Q) he will never leave you nor forsake you.(R) Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.”

Public Reading of the Law

So Moses wrote(S) down this law and gave it to the Levitical priests, who carried(T) the ark of the covenant of the Lord, and to all the elders of Israel. 10 Then Moses commanded them: “At the end of every seven years, in the year for canceling debts,(U) during the Festival of Tabernacles,(V) 11 when all Israel comes to appear(W) before the Lord your God at the place he will choose,(X) you shall read this law(Y) before them in their hearing. 12 Assemble the people—men, women and children, and the foreigners residing in your towns—so they can listen and learn(Z) to fear(AA) the Lord your God and follow carefully all the words of this law. 13 Their children,(AB) who do not know this law, must hear it and learn to fear the Lord your God as long as you live in the land you are crossing the Jordan to possess.”

Israel’s Rebellion Predicted

14 The Lord said to Moses, “Now the day of your death(AC) is near. Call Joshua(AD) and present yourselves at the tent of meeting, where I will commission him.(AE)” So Moses and Joshua came and presented themselves at the tent of meeting.(AF)

15 Then the Lord appeared at the tent in a pillar of cloud, and the cloud stood over the entrance to the tent.(AG) 16 And the Lord said to Moses: “You are going to rest with your ancestors,(AH) and these people will soon prostitute(AI) themselves to the foreign gods of the land they are entering. They will forsake(AJ) me and break the covenant I made with them. 17 And in that day I will become angry(AK) with them and forsake(AL) them; I will hide(AM) my face(AN) from them, and they will be destroyed. Many disasters(AO) and calamities will come on them, and in that day they will ask, ‘Have not these disasters come on us because our God is not with us?’(AP) 18 And I will certainly hide my face in that day because of all their wickedness in turning to other gods.

19 “Now write(AQ) down this song and teach it to the Israelites and have them sing it, so that it may be a witness(AR) for me against them. 20 When I have brought them into the land flowing with milk and honey, the land I promised on oath to their ancestors,(AS) and when they eat their fill and thrive, they will turn to other gods(AT) and worship them,(AU) rejecting me and breaking my covenant.(AV) 21 And when many disasters and calamities come on them,(AW) this song will testify against them, because it will not be forgotten by their descendants. I know what they are disposed to do,(AX) even before I bring them into the land I promised them on oath.” 22 So Moses wrote(AY) down this song that day and taught it to the Israelites.

23 The Lord gave this command(AZ) to Joshua son of Nun: “Be strong and courageous,(BA) for you will bring the Israelites into the land I promised them on oath, and I myself will be with you.”

24 After Moses finished writing(BB) in a book the words of this law(BC) from beginning to end, 25 he gave this command to the Levites who carried(BD) the ark of the covenant of the Lord: 26 “Take this Book of the Law and place it beside the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God. There it will remain as a witness against you.(BE) 27 For I know how rebellious(BF) and stiff-necked(BG) you are. If you have been rebellious against the Lord while I am still alive and with you, how much more will you rebel after I die! 28 Assemble before me all the elders of your tribes and all your officials, so that I can speak these words in their hearing and call the heavens and the earth to testify against them.(BH) 29 For I know that after my death you are sure to become utterly corrupt(BI) and to turn from the way I have commanded you. In days to come, disaster(BJ) will fall on you because you will do evil in the sight of the Lord and arouse his anger by what your hands have made.”

The Song of Moses

30 And Moses recited the words of this song from beginning to end in the hearing of the whole assembly of Israel:

32 Listen,(BK) you heavens,(BL) and I will speak;
hear, you earth, the words of my mouth.(BM)
Let my teaching fall like rain(BN)
and my words descend like dew,(BO)
like showers(BP) on new grass,
like abundant rain on tender plants.

I will proclaim(BQ) the name of the Lord.(BR)
Oh, praise the greatness(BS) of our God!
He is the Rock,(BT) his works are perfect,(BU)
and all his ways are just.
A faithful God(BV) who does no wrong,
upright(BW) and just is he.(BX)

They are corrupt and not his children;
to their shame they are a warped and crooked generation.(BY)
Is this the way you repay(BZ) the Lord,
you foolish(CA) and unwise people?(CB)
Is he not your Father,(CC) your Creator,[a]
who made you and formed you?(CD)

Remember the days of old;(CE)
consider the generations long past.(CF)
Ask your father and he will tell you,
your elders, and they will explain to you.(CG)
When the Most High(CH) gave the nations their inheritance,
when he divided all mankind,(CI)
he set up boundaries(CJ) for the peoples
according to the number of the sons of Israel.[b](CK)
For the Lord’s portion(CL) is his people,
Jacob his allotted inheritance.(CM)

10 In a desert(CN) land he found him,
in a barren and howling waste.(CO)
He shielded(CP) him and cared for him;
he guarded him as the apple of his eye,(CQ)
11 like an eagle that stirs up its nest
and hovers over its young,(CR)
that spreads its wings to catch them
and carries them aloft.(CS)
12 The Lord alone led(CT) him;(CU)
no foreign god was with him.(CV)

13 He made him ride on the heights(CW) of the land
and fed him with the fruit of the fields.
He nourished him with honey from the rock,(CX)
and with oil(CY) from the flinty crag,
14 with curds and milk from herd and flock
and with fattened lambs and goats,
with choice rams of Bashan(CZ)
and the finest kernels of wheat.(DA)
You drank the foaming blood of the grape.(DB)

15 Jeshurun[c](DC) grew fat(DD) and kicked;
filled with food, they became heavy and sleek.
They abandoned(DE) the God who made them
and rejected the Rock(DF) their Savior.
16 They made him jealous(DG) with their foreign gods
and angered(DH) him with their detestable idols.
17 They sacrificed(DI) to false gods,(DJ) which are not God—
gods they had not known,(DK)
gods that recently appeared,(DL)
gods your ancestors did not fear.
18 You deserted the Rock, who fathered you;
you forgot(DM) the God who gave you birth.

19 The Lord saw this and rejected them(DN)
because he was angered by his sons and daughters.(DO)
20 “I will hide my face(DP) from them,” he said,
“and see what their end will be;
for they are a perverse generation,(DQ)
children who are unfaithful.(DR)
21 They made me jealous(DS) by what is no god
and angered me with their worthless idols.(DT)
I will make them envious by those who are not a people;
I will make them angry by a nation that has no understanding.(DU)
22 For a fire will be kindled by my wrath,(DV)
one that burns down to the realm of the dead below.(DW)
It will devour(DX) the earth and its harvests(DY)
and set afire the foundations of the mountains.(DZ)

23 “I will heap calamities(EA) on them
and spend my arrows(EB) against them.
24 I will send wasting famine(EC) against them,
consuming pestilence(ED) and deadly plague;(EE)
I will send against them the fangs of wild beasts,(EF)
the venom of vipers(EG) that glide in the dust.(EH)
25 In the street the sword will make them childless;
in their homes terror(EI) will reign.(EJ)
The young men and young women will perish,
the infants and those with gray hair.(EK)
26 I said I would scatter(EL) them
and erase their name from human memory,(EM)
27 but I dreaded the taunt of the enemy,
lest the adversary misunderstand(EN)
and say, ‘Our hand has triumphed;
the Lord has not done all this.’”(EO)

Luke 12:8-34

“I tell you, whoever publicly acknowledges me before others, the Son of Man will also acknowledge before the angels of God.(A) But whoever disowns me before others will be disowned(B) before the angels of God. 10 And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man(C) will be forgiven, but anyone who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven.(D)

11 “When you are brought before synagogues, rulers and authorities, do not worry about how you will defend yourselves or what you will say,(E) 12 for the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what you should say.”(F)

The Parable of the Rich Fool

13 Someone in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.”

14 Jesus replied, “Man, who appointed me a judge or an arbiter between you?” 15 Then he said to them, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.”(G)

16 And he told them this parable: “The ground of a certain rich man yielded an abundant harvest. 17 He thought to himself, ‘What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.’

18 “Then he said, ‘This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store my surplus grain. 19 And I’ll say to myself, “You have plenty of grain laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.”’

20 “But God said to him, ‘You fool!(H) This very night your life will be demanded from you.(I) Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’(J)

21 “This is how it will be with whoever stores up things for themselves but is not rich toward God.”(K)

Do Not Worry(L)

22 Then Jesus said to his disciples: “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear. 23 For life is more than food, and the body more than clothes. 24 Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them.(M) And how much more valuable you are than birds! 25 Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to your life[a]? 26 Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest?

27 “Consider how the wild flowers grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor(N) was dressed like one of these. 28 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today, and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, how much more will he clothe you—you of little faith!(O) 29 And do not set your heart on what you will eat or drink; do not worry about it. 30 For the pagan world runs after all such things, and your Father(P) knows that you need them.(Q) 31 But seek his kingdom,(R) and these things will be given to you as well.(S)

32 “Do not be afraid,(T) little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom.(U) 33 Sell your possessions and give to the poor.(V) Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven(W) that will never fail, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys.(X) 34 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.(Y)

Psalm 78:32-55

32 In spite of all this, they kept on sinning;(A)
in spite of his wonders,(B) they did not believe.(C)
33 So he ended their days in futility(D)
and their years in terror.
34 Whenever God slew them, they would seek(E) him;
they eagerly turned to him again.
35 They remembered that God was their Rock,(F)
that God Most High was their Redeemer.(G)
36 But then they would flatter him with their mouths,(H)
lying to him with their tongues;
37 their hearts were not loyal(I) to him,
they were not faithful to his covenant.
38 Yet he was merciful;(J)
he forgave(K) their iniquities(L)
and did not destroy them.
Time after time he restrained his anger(M)
and did not stir up his full wrath.
39 He remembered that they were but flesh,(N)
a passing breeze(O) that does not return.

40 How often they rebelled(P) against him in the wilderness(Q)
and grieved him(R) in the wasteland!
41 Again and again they put God to the test;(S)
they vexed the Holy One of Israel.(T)
42 They did not remember(U) his power—
the day he redeemed them from the oppressor,(V)
43 the day he displayed his signs(W) in Egypt,
his wonders(X) in the region of Zoan.
44 He turned their river into blood;(Y)
they could not drink from their streams.
45 He sent swarms of flies(Z) that devoured them,
and frogs(AA) that devastated them.
46 He gave their crops to the grasshopper,(AB)
their produce to the locust.(AC)
47 He destroyed their vines with hail(AD)
and their sycamore-figs with sleet.
48 He gave over their cattle to the hail,
their livestock(AE) to bolts of lightning.
49 He unleashed against them his hot anger,(AF)
his wrath, indignation and hostility—
a band of destroying angels.(AG)
50 He prepared a path for his anger;
he did not spare them from death
but gave them over to the plague.
51 He struck down all the firstborn of Egypt,(AH)
the firstfruits of manhood in the tents of Ham.(AI)
52 But he brought his people out like a flock;(AJ)
he led them like sheep through the wilderness.
53 He guided them safely, so they were unafraid;
but the sea engulfed(AK) their enemies.(AL)
54 And so he brought them to the border of his holy land,
to the hill country his right hand(AM) had taken.
55 He drove out nations(AN) before them
and allotted their lands to them as an inheritance;(AO)
he settled the tribes of Israel in their homes.

Deuteronomy 29:1-30:20, Luke 11:37-12:7, Psalms 78:1-31, Proverbs 12:19-20

Today is the 6th day of April. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian. It’s great to be here with you as we end another week together and they do just keep going by but thankfully they’re not idly going by. Every single day the word of God is being sowed into our days and weeks and months. And, so, as we close another of our weeks together we’ll allow God’s word to speak into this day. We’re reading from the book of Deuteronomy. Today we’ll read chapter 29 and 30 and we’re reading from the Christian Standard Bible this week.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word and we thank You for another week in Your word. And as we conclude this week in Your word we take the words from the Scriptures found in the book of Deuteronomy to heart today. “I call heaven and earth as witnesses against You today that I have set before You life and death, blessing and curse. Choose life.” Father show us how to do that. We choose life. As You’ve said in Your word, it’s not too hard for us. It’s not like someone has to go to heaven and bring it down. It’s not like somebody has to go to the other side of the sea and bring it to us. It’s in our mouths and in our hearts. Well up within us Holy Spirit. We acknowledge, we want life, but we will chase every distraction that will lead only away from life. So, we ask for You to shepherd us, to Father us, to guide us, to lead us into all truth and our role is to trust and obey for there is no other way as the old hymns says, to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey. And, so, we trust You as we step forward and prepare for the next week. We trust You and we will obey You and will choose life. Come Holy Spirit we pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hello DABbers, this is Christopher in Pretzel City. Could you please pray for Kassidy? She is an infant who has been diagnosed with retinoblastoma. She is in Madison currently and they are evaluating how big this tumor is and how to treat it. She will, unless a miracle happens, lose her left eye and her family is taking this hard but we are maintaining faith and we are believing in a full healing that will glorify God and we covet your prayers and this. So please join me in this declaration and thank you so much.

Good morning my DAB family this is Paula calling from Albuquerque. I’m gonna try and talk fast. I haven’t even finished listening to community prayer from Saturday but there’s a couple of things that have been on my heart and I just haven’t called. So, I’m going to do it now. Dash, you’ve been on my heart. From the first time I heard your call I couldn’t figure out why that name was familiar to me. Please don’t take this lightly. I recognized the name from watching the Incredibles with my kids and my grandkids. He is a fictitious character, but do you know the background of his name means that he could walk on water? And we can each walk on water when we keep our focus on the Lord. So, there’s some food for thought for you and we’ll continue to pray for you. The mom called from Chicago about your son, been there done that too. 10 years ago, I had to kick my son out. My first grandchild was on the way and I was terrified, but I chose to be obedient to the Lord. By the time she was born less than a year later our relationship was back on track. We were able to reconcile. It still is a rough road at times because he’s not walking with the Lord, neither is his wife but I pour into my two grandchildren as I can because that’s what we need to do as believers and mothers and grandmothers and people that have influence in their life. The other thing is I just wanted to remind all of you, I mean I pray when I listen but a very wise friend of mine shared with me several years ago and I hold fast, whoever is in our thought process, they are harmless, they are defenseless against our prayers. So just keep praying. I know there are many that are praying that we never hear about. Thank you for your prayers. Thank you for your support. I love you all.

This is Denise. This is going to be in unusual prayer request. I don’t hear this often as I’ve been listening for the past several years, but this is very important to me. I’ve been in the marriage for more than 20+ years and __ marriage ha,s changed __ years __ grown apart. And to make a long story short, my husband cheated on me some years back and it caused…changed the dynamic of our relationship to the point where it destroyed our intimacy and it destroyed our closeness. We’re still partners, we’re still sticking with it, we try to still love each other but, needless to say, I personal relationship is damaged and I’m here to admit that I started an affair. It’s been a long-term affair for years but I only did it because I wasn’t getting what I thought I needed from my husband but God convicted me to try to get close to God and I decided to break that relationship off and I broke the relationship off __ God __ me despite what I don’t have what I don’t get from a relationship from my marriage I was going to get from God. But I called today to ask you to pray for my strength because I want to be what God wants me to be. I want to be the wife who I need to be to my husband and I want the love and compassion that I have for him that I had in the affair. I pray for continued strength because even though I broke off the affair I deeply, deeply, deeply miss him. __ allow myself to call __ contact me __ ways because I promised God I was cutting it off and I ask that you pray my strength.

Hi family this is little his low Cherry from Canada with another creative way to pray. This month’s idea is very simple and symbolic, which are two of my favorite things. Maybe you have someone who’s really on your heart. Why not put the picture in your pocket to carry with you throughout the day? if you don’t have a picture of them maybe doodle their name on a piece of paper or write their name on a small stone and put that in your pocket and then whenever you touch it say a prayer for them? You are literally carrying them in prayer all day long when you do that. Another version of this idea is to carry someone’s picture or name with you on a walk and I particularly like to do this through the rain. On a spring day in Canada when it’s actually raining and not snowing I’ll take my umbrella and walk with someone’s picture held in my hand, which is especially meaningful if that person is going through something difficult because the symbolism is that even in the rain they are being held and you can pray as you walk that they will sense and know that the Father is carrying them even in the storm. So, I’m sure you can think about many of the versions of this. There’s no right or one way to do it. So, experiment, get creative, have fun. Picture prayer walks, another creative way to pray from the banqueting table of prayer. Thanks family. Bye for now.

Deuteronomy 29-30

Renewing the Covenant

29 These are the words of the covenant(A) the Lord commanded Moses to make with the Israelites in the land of Moab, in addition to the covenant he had made with them at Horeb.(B) Moses summoned all Israel and said to them, “You have seen with your own eyes(C) everything the Lord did in Egypt to Pharaoh, to all his officials, and to his entire land. You saw with your own eyes the great trials and those great signs and wonders.(D) Yet to this day the Lord has not given you a mind to understand, eyes to see, or ears to hear.(E) I led you forty years in the wilderness; your clothes and the sandals on your feet did not wear out;(F) you did not eat food or drink wine or beer—so that you might know that I am the Lord your God.(G) When you reached this place, King Sihon of Heshbon and King Og of Bashan came out against us in battle, but we defeated them.(H) We took their land and gave it as an inheritance to the Reubenites, the Gadites, and half the tribe of Manasseh.(I) Therefore, observe the words of this covenant(J) and follow them, so that you will succeed in everything you do.(K)

10 “All of you are standing today before the Lord your God—your leaders, tribes, elders, officials, all the men of Israel, 11 your dependents, your wives, and the resident aliens in your camps who cut your wood and draw your water— 12 so that you may enter into the covenant of the Lord your God, which he is making with you today, so that you may enter into his oath 13 and so that he may establish you today as his people and he may be your God as he promised you and as he swore to your fathers Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.(L) 14 I am making this covenant and this oath not only with you, 15 but also with those who are standing here with us today in the presence of the Lord our God and with those who are not here today.

Abandoning the Covenant

16 “Indeed, you know how we lived in the land of Egypt and passed through the nations where you traveled. 17 You saw their abhorrent images and idols made of wood, stone, silver, and gold, which were among them.(M) 18 Be sure there is no man, woman, clan, or tribe among you today whose heart turns away from the Lord our God to go and worship the gods of those nations. Be sure there is no root among you bearing poisonous and bitter fruit.(N) 19 When someone hears the words of this oath, he may consider himself exempt,[a] thinking, ‘I will have peace even though I follow my own stubborn heart.’ This will lead to the destruction of the well-watered land as well as the dry land. 20 The Lord will not be willing to forgive him. Instead, his anger and jealousy will burn against that person, and every curse written in this scroll will descend on him. The Lord will blot out his name under heaven,(O) 21 and single him out for harm from all the tribes of Israel, according to all the curses of the covenant written in this book of the law.

22 “Future generations of your children who follow you and the foreigner who comes from a distant country will see the plagues of that land and the sicknesses the Lord has inflicted on it. 23 All its soil will be a burning waste of sulfur and salt, unsown, producing nothing, with no plant growing on it, just like the fall of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, which the Lord demolished in his fierce anger.(P) 24 All the nations will ask, ‘Why has the Lord done this to this land? Why this intense outburst of anger?’ 25 Then people will answer, ‘It is because they abandoned the covenant of the Lord, the God of their fathers, which he had made with them when he brought them out of the land of Egypt. 26 They began to serve other gods, bowing in worship to gods they had not known(Q)—gods that the Lord had not permitted them to worship.(R) 27 Therefore the Lord’s anger burned against this land, and he brought every curse written in this book on it. 28 The Lord uprooted them from their land in his anger, rage, and intense wrath, and threw them into another land where they are today.’ 29 The hidden things belong to the Lord our God, but the revealed things belong to us and our children forever, so that we may follow all the words of this law.

Returning to the Lord

30 “When all these things happen to you—the blessings and curses I have set before you—and you come to your senses while you are in all the nations where the Lord your God has driven you,(S) and you and your children return to the Lord your God and obey him with all your heart and all your soul(T) by doing[b] everything I am commanding you today, then he will restore your fortunes,[c](U) have compassion on you, and gather you again from all the peoples where the Lord your God has scattered you.(V) Even if your exiles are at the farthest horizon,[d] he will gather you and bring you back from there.(W) The Lord your God will bring you into the land your fathers possessed, and you will take possession of it.(X) He will cause you to prosper and multiply you more than he did your fathers.(Y) The Lord your God will circumcise your heart(Z) and the hearts of your descendants, and you will love him with all your heart and all your soul so that you will live.(AA) The Lord your God will put all these curses on your enemies who hate and persecute you. Then you will again obey him and follow all his commands I am commanding you today. The Lord your God will make you prosper abundantly in all the work of your hands,(AB) your offspring,[e] the offspring of your livestock, and the produce of your land. Indeed, the Lord will again delight in your prosperity, as he delighted in that of your fathers, 10 when you obey the Lord your God by keeping his commands and statutes that are written in this book of the law and return to him with all your heart and all your soul.

Choose Life

11 “This command that I give you today is certainly not too difficult or beyond your reach. 12 It is not in heaven so that you have to ask, ‘Who will go up to heaven, get it for us, and proclaim it to us so that we may follow it?’ 13 And it is not across the sea so that you have to ask, ‘Who will cross the sea, get it for us, and proclaim it to us so that we may follow it?’ 14 But the message is very near you, in your mouth and in your heart, so that you may follow it.(AC) 15 See, today I have set before you life and prosperity, death and adversity.(AD) 16 For[f] I am commanding you today to love the Lord your God, to walk in his ways, and to keep his commands, statutes, and ordinances, so that you may live[g] and multiply, and the Lord your God may bless you in the land you are entering to possess. 17 But if your heart turns away and you do not listen and you are led astray to bow in worship to other gods and serve them, 18 I tell you today that you will certainly perish and will not prolong your days in the land you are entering to possess across the Jordan. 19 I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you today that I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Choose life(AE) so that you and your descendants may live, 20 love the Lord your God, obey him, and remain faithful[h] to him. For he is your life, and he will prolong your days as you live in the land the Lord swore to give to your fathers(AF) Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.”

Luke 11:37-12:7

Religious Hypocrisy Denounced

37 As he was speaking, a Pharisee(A) asked him to dine with him. So he went in and reclined at the table. 38 When the Pharisee saw this, he was amazed that he did not first perform the ritual washing[a](B) before dinner.(C) 39 But the Lord said to him, “Now you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside you are full of greed(D) and evil.(E) 40 Fools!(F) Didn’t he who made the outside make the inside too? 41 But give from what is within to the poor,[b](G) and then everything is clean(H) for you.

42 “But woe(I) to you Pharisees! You give a tenth[c](J) of mint, rue, and every kind of herb, and you bypass[d] justice(K) and love for God.[e](L) These things you should have done without neglecting the others.

43 “Woe to you Pharisees! You love the front seat(M) in the synagogues(N) and greetings in the marketplaces.

44 “Woe to you![f] You are like unmarked graves; (O) the people who walk over them don’t know it.”

45 One of the experts in the law(P) answered him, “Teacher, when you say these things you insult us too.”

46 Then he said: “Woe also to you experts in the law! You load people with burdens(Q) that are hard to carry, and yet you yourselves don’t touch these burdens with one of your fingers.(R)

47 “Woe to you! You build tombs[g] for the prophets,(S) and your fathers killed(T) them. 48 Therefore, you are witnesses(U) that you approve[h](V) the deeds of your fathers, for they killed them, and you build their monuments.[i] 49 Because of this, the wisdom of God(W) said, ‘I will send them prophets and apostles,(X) and some of them they will kill and persecute,’(Y) 50 so that this generation(Z) may be held responsible for the blood of all the prophets shed since the foundation of the world[j](AA) 51 from the blood of Abel(AB) to the blood of Zechariah,(AC) who perished between the altar and the sanctuary.

“Yes, I tell you, this generation will be held responsible.[k]

52 “Woe to you experts in the law! You have taken away the key to knowledge.(AD) You didn’t go in yourselves, and you hindered(AE) those who were trying to go in.”

53 When he left there,[l] the scribes and the Pharisees began to oppose(AF) him fiercely and to cross-examine him about many things; 54 they were lying in wait(AG) for him to trap him in something he said.[m](AH)

Beware of Religious Hypocrisy

12 Meanwhile, a crowd of many thousands came together, so that they were trampling(AI) on one another. He began to say to his disciples first,(AJ) “Be on your guard(AK) against the leaven[n](AL) of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.(AM) There is nothing covered that won’t be uncovered,(AN) nothing hidden that won’t be made known.(AO) Therefore, whatever you have said in the dark will be heard in the light, and what you have whispered in an ear in private rooms(AP) will be proclaimed on the housetops.(AQ)

Fear God

“I say to you, my friends,(AR) don’t fear(AS) those who kill the body, and after that can do nothing more. But I will show you the one to fear: Fear(AT) him who has authority to throw people into hell(AU) after death. Yes, I say to you, this is the one to fear! Aren’t five sparrows sold for two pennies?[o] Yet not one of them is forgotten in God’s sight.(AV) Indeed, the hairs of your head are all counted. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.

Psalm 78:1-31

Psalm 78

Lessons from Israel’s Past

A Maskil of Asaph.(A)

My people, hear my instruction;
listen to the words from my mouth.(B)
I will declare wise sayings;
I will speak mysteries from the past(C)
things we have heard and known
and that our fathers have passed down to us.(D)
We will not hide them from their children,
but will tell a future generation
the praiseworthy acts of the Lord,
his might, and the wondrous works
he has performed.(E)
He established a testimony in Jacob
and set up a law in Israel,
which he commanded our fathers
to teach to their children(F)
so that a future generation—
children yet to be born—might know.
They were to rise and tell their children(G)
so that they might put their confidence in God
and not forget God’s works,
but keep his commands.(H)
Then they would not be like their fathers,
a stubborn and rebellious generation,
a generation whose heart was not loyal
and whose spirit was not faithful to God.(I)

The Ephraimite archers turned back
on the day of battle.(J)
10 They did not keep God’s covenant
and refused to live by his law.(K)
11 They forgot what he had done,
the wondrous works he had shown them.(L)
12 He worked wonders in the sight of their fathers
in the land of Egypt, the territory of Zoan.(M)
13 He split the sea and brought them across;
the water stood firm like a wall.(N)
14 He led them with a cloud by day
and with a fiery light throughout the night.(O)
15 He split rocks in the wilderness
and gave them drink as abundant as the depths.(P)
16 He brought streams out of the stone
and made water flow down like rivers.(Q)

17 But they continued to sin against him,
rebelling in the desert against the Most High.(R)
18 They deliberately[a] tested God,
demanding the food they craved.(S)
19 They spoke against God, saying,
“Is God able to provide food in the wilderness?
20 Look! He struck the rock and water gushed out;
torrents overflowed.(T)
But can he also provide bread
or furnish meat for his people?” (U)
21 Therefore, the Lord heard and became furious;
then fire broke out against Jacob,
and anger flared up against Israel(V)
22 because they did not believe God
or rely on his salvation.(W)
23 He gave a command to the clouds above
and opened the doors of heaven.(X)
24 He rained manna for them to eat;
he gave them grain from heaven.(Y)
25 People[b] ate the bread of angels.[c]
He sent them an abundant supply of food.(Z)
26 He made the east wind blow in the skies
and drove the south wind by his might.(AA)
27 He rained meat on them like dust,
and winged birds like the sand of the seas.
28 He made them fall in the camp,
all around the tents.(AB)
29 The people ate and were completely satisfied,
for he gave them what they craved.(AC)
30 Before they had turned from what they craved,
while the food was still in their mouths,
31 God’s anger flared up against them,
and he killed some of their best men.
He struck down Israel’s fit young men.(AD)

Deuteronomy 28:1-68, Luke 11:14-36, Psalms 77:1-20, Proverbs 12:18

Today is April 5th. I don’t know what I was gonna say. What do I usually say? Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible? I like I turned the mic on before my head was…my mind was engaged. Let’s do this again. Today is April 5th. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian. It is great to be here with you and it’s a joy as we reach the end of another work week to continue forward into this changing of the seasons and just allow this rhythm that is the word of God in our lives every day to continue to pull us forward into our year. So, we’ve been reading from the Christian Standard Bible this week. We’ll continue to do that through the end of the week today and go back out into the book of Deuteronomy. And, once again, Deuteronomy is the final book of the Torah, of the Pentateuch, and it is the last things, the last three discussions or discourses that Moses has with the children of Israel, his final words before he will leave them and disappear from our history and we will continue forward under a new leader as we prepare to move across the Jordan River and into the book of Joshua. But that’s getting ahead of ourselves, that’s just a reminder of what it is we are reading in Deuteronomy. So, today, Deuteronomy chapter 28.

Commentary:

Alright. So, in the book of Deuteronomy today we spent some time in some pretty ominous territory, some pretty dark things that could happen to the children of Israel. And, so, let’s back up for a second. The children of Israel are being told by Moses that when they get into the promised land there supposed to go to the top of Mount Gerizim with half of their tribes and pronounce the blessings of the covenant and the other tribes are supposed to go up on the top of Mount Ebal and pronounce the curses of breaking the covenant. And these are actual geographical locations, Mount Ebal and Mount Gerizim. And back when we were in Israel just…I guess…I guess a little more than a month ago…we went to the top of Mount Gerizim. It is one of the places where the last remaining Samaritan people live, and it was the Mount of blessing. And, so, we went up there and had it been a clear day, we would’ve been able to look down upon a biblical Shechem and over to Mount Ebal, the mount of curses, but it was socked in and raining sideways and cold. And, so, we didn’t get to see all that but we did get to get out in it, those of us who wanted to and it’s the second time I’ve done that, stood on top of the mount a blessing and let the wind blow because I’ve just learned of my life that blessing doesn’t always look like…we don’t get to exactly choose what that’s gonna look like. Like, when we open ourselves to God’s direction then it may be disruptive before it’s complete. But I’m kind of sidetracking here. We heard of the blessings and it was kind of a short, concise declaration that essentially said, if you follow…if you follow these commands, if you live like this, if you press in and be my people, then there’s nothing that will harm you and you will be blessed in everything that you do. Then we get to the curses and it’s much more ominous about what’s going to happen. This is a good time for us to understand what we’re reading here because we can read of ominous things that are so horrible like eating your own children because you’re starving in a besieged city. There we’re like, “what the heck? You know, what’s happening here? And why is God so angry? This usually comes from prophetic utterances that depict this type of destruction. Let’s get on the same page here. This is a prophetic utterance about something that could happen not about something that would happen. It would happen if the people abandon God. Their path will lead them to complete destruction and the kind of destruction that we’re talking about is being outlined so that they will know this is what will happen, but it does not need to happen. Unfortunately, even though they are being given advance prophetic warning and a clear picture of where abandoning God will lead them, they will still abandon God and they will unfortunately witness and experience these things. But as we continue forward, especially as we get into more prophetic works in the Old Testament we’ll see these kinds of prophecies that can give us such a sense of foreboding when they are prophecies of things that have not happened and do not need to happen if the people will turn back, will come back, will return to the covenantal relationship that they have entered into. And the same is true in our own lives. It’s just that a lot of times we’ll step out of the covenant, we’ll betray God, and then then things will go sideways in our lives and we’ll be mad at God for it when it’s not His fault and He did not do it and he did send his prophets through the Scriptures to say, “don’t go that way. That’s only going to destroy you. Please don’t go down that path. Here’s what will happen if you do you don’t have to do this. Stay with me.”

Prayer:

Father, we invite You into that. We’ve confessed many times that we’ve blamed You for things that You didn’t do and it’s a continual thing for us this, this kind of reestablishing relationship with You and understanding that this is a two-way street. And yes, You are the solemn God but also yes You have condescended Yourself down to a place where we can actually have a relationship with You that is personal. And, so, we’re sorry for the myriad of ways that we estrange ourselves from You and blame You for things You don’t have anything to do with. And, so, even as we’re moving through toward the end of the Torah, the book of Deuteronomy here, we see You giving warnings and we understand that if we look back over our lives the warnings were there before we made the wrong decision, we just pay attention, we just didn’t slow down and look, or we just simply didn’t care. But we are learning so much and we are seeing cause and effect in the Scriptures and we are seeing it in our own lives and its starting to lock in and make sense and we realize that You are a redeemer and You will rush to our defense at any point that we will surrender to You and return to You. And, so, we do right now. We come back, we repent, we apologize for the ways that we’ve betrayed You and the ways that we’ve blamed You. Come Holy Spirit, lead us into all truth. We ask in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Good morning Daily Audio Bible family this is Christine from Washington state and I heard Dustin, his call…or Dustin from Spokane…call and Spokane is my home town. And, so, Dustin and I heard your just voice…was just crushed and I can just feel your pain and I am praying for you __ my called. And then I heard a woman call from the Pacific Northwest today, which is Monday, April 1st and said she was having temptations, she’s married. And you just…you cannot…you cannot…you can’t get involved with this man. First of all, it’s just Satan tempting you. And, you know, Satan started in the garden of Eden with Adam and Eve trying to break them up. So, do not. You need to pray for your husband. I have a husband that’s an unbeliever and I thought about doing the same thing you did, and God just stopped me. He stopped me. He protected me. And it is not His will for you to do that. So, just be strong, keep praying for your husband, pray for him every day. Some days I just pray God’s will over him because I know anything I pray specifically is something I want. So, just pray God’s will or your husband and just keep praying and praying. I am seeing stuff change in my husband and believe me it’s been a long road but it’s just better than…than sinning against God and doing something you’ll both feel bad about even if it’s this man of God that you know and have met. Don’t…just don’t do it. So, I’m praying for all of you. And I’m so sad. I’m gonna miss the More Conference. It is so phenomenal, and Jill and Brian just do a beautiful job….

Hi community this is Charis from Texas. I was really inspired to call when I was listening the other day and I can’t remember the woman’s name but she cleans houses for a living and she listens to the prayer requests over and over again while she’s cleaning house and she’s praying for people and as I was thinking about my own situation I was like, oh, I just want that lady to be praying over my son. I have a son, he’s an adult and he deals with undiagnosed bipolar disorder and he has the clear signs of mental illness but won’t really acknowledge that he could get help with medication or __ therapy or behavior modification. And when you’re living close to someone that you love that is bipolar or has certain types of mental illness and they’re not getting help it is like watching…you hear the train coming and you can go, I think there’s a train coming, and then it’s full-blown, yup, it’s coming, and then it goes in front of you and it’s just loud and chaotic and then finally the trains passing and noise dyes down and there’s a calm for a little while before the next train comes. And that’s what it’s like with mental illness, you start seeing signs in the cycle that concern you and you go, oh my goodness, you know, he just had an explosive moment or this or that and then the symptoms and the cycle just build up and build up and build up and, then they blow up and then things start to die down before the calm again. And I’m just asking the community to pray for those of us that are dealing with this. Praying for my son, Timothy and his wife and our family as…

Good morning or wherever you are this is That Girl in Korea. I’m just calling…I was listening this morning to a woman that called in about meeting this beautiful godly man while she’s married to a non-Christian and I was just feeling really convicted to say that, you know, whatever God has brought together let no man separate. I think it should be very encouraging that God showed you this beautifully godly man and that you should, you know, highlight those…the qualities that you find so attractive and just pray that over your current husband. He really needs the strength of the Lord and the convictions of the Holy Spirit. And I think you’re in a really good place to pray for your husband and to pray for protection over your own heart. In the Lord’s prayer it says forgive us our trespasses and lead us not into temptation Lord for yours is the glory and power and honor forever and ever. So, this morning just be encouraged that wherever you are, sorry that I forget your name, but do not fall into temptation over this sweet godly man that is single. Pray for him as a brother but pray for your husband that as a brother as well. He needs you as his wife, he needs you praying for him and for his __ for salvation and for him to find Jesus. And also, it’s great that you get to see this godly man just to remember the kind of godly standards that you can, in your mind, in your heart, hold your husband to in prayer and encouragement and in love. I know it must be difficult but praying for you sister wherever you are, for you to have a great day and for the Lord guide you…

Hi everyone, it’s Christi from Kentucky. I am so amazed at our most faithful and loving God. I know that Kathy Baker called in and told you that we are almost neighbors, seriously. When Kathy had posted about her brother Denver, that he was in hospice and he was about to make his journey home. When I saw that I knew she was from Kentucky, so I looked at her profile and I found out that she’s from Lexington. And friends, we literally live from 2 miles away from one another. And, so, we met at a local hospital chapel and we were able to pray together. It was just such a beautiful time and we have so much in common. God is so good. And listen to this. Today I’m having lunch with a friend of mine from church, her name is Debbie and she’s married to Tim. And during lunch Tim texted her and she just said, “oh no” and I said, “what’s wrong?” She said, “one of our friends…I just found out that he passed away” and I said, “I’m so sorry Debbie. What’s his name?” and she said, “Denver” and I said, “Debbie did his last name happen to be Baker? and she said, “yeah…like…how do you know?” Friends, that is Kathy Baker’s brother, Denver Baker and my friend Debbie and Tim went to the same church together. Matter of fact Tim taught the Sunday school class that Denver was in. Isn’t that amazing? God orders every one of our steps and He makes Himself known to us in the most beautiful ways. So, Kathy I want you to know that I want you to meet Tim and Debbie. And, you know, I know that the Lord is…

Amen.
