Genesis 1:1-2:25, Matthew 1:1-2:12, Psalms 1:1-6, Proverbs 1:1-6

Today is January 1st. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian. It’s great to be here with you today. Happy New Year, by the way. What a difference one day can bring. Right? Yesterday we were in a different year and most of us woke up this morning with the intention of walking into a new life in some way. Right? So, you’re getting all the right groceries because going to change your health habits. It’s like the first day at the gym for some of you, while others have different goals and resolutions. And some of you have turned toward your spirituality. This is the year I’m going to read the Bible cover to cover. And you’ve made that commitment to yourself, which has landed you here. Welcome.

You can certainly meet that objective. And in meeting that objective you’re going to find out there’s a lot more going on here at Daily Audio Bible, there’s a whole community, hundreds of thousands of us taking this journey through the Scriptures this year. And if you’re back, if you were here yesterday as we concluded the 12th year of the Daily Audio Bible, then welcome back. Whether this is year 13 for you or this is your 10th year or 5th year or 2nd year, welcome back. This year is going to be epic because the Bible is epic. And as we begin to take this journey together we’ll begin to peel back the layers and begin to understand who these strange people with strange names are, but they won’t be strange for long. We’re going to meet a lot of people, ancient people in ancient cultures with ancient customs, but we’re going to find that they weren’t looking for anything different than what we are looking for. They were trying to find God. And it won’t take long to realize these are antiquated and forgettable stories. They are us and we are them. And rather than forgetting them, we’ll realize that they are our spiritual ancestors and their stories have influenced the world as we know it. So, buckle in. This will be an epic journey. But before you buckle in you should take a look in the mirror. Take a good long look into your own eyes. Look at yourself. Think about how life is right now, because 365 days from now, and it will happen faster than you think, things will be different. Make a commitment to look at yourself in the mirror 365 days from now and you’ll see what I’m talking about. And, so, with that we begin a brand-new year.

And the way that the Daily Audio Bible works is that we’ll be moving through a little bit of the Old Testament, a bit of the New Testament, a bit from Psalms, and a bit from Proverbs every day as we move our way through the entire Bible this year. And, so, as we begin this brand-new year, I mean, we’ll be starting Matthew, we’ll be starting Genesis, we’ll be starting Psalms, and Proverbs today. Over the next few days I’ll be talking about the different themes of these books and then we’ll, kind of, do a flyover every time we come to a new book, just to give ourselves a little bit of context for what it is we’re going to read.

Genesis:

Let’s talk about Genesis. Genesis is the first book in the Bible, but it’s not just that. It’s also the first book in a series of books known as the Pentateuch or the Torah. These are the first five books in the Bible - Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. And these are known as the books of Moses. It’ll be little while before we meet Moses, but we will, soon enough. And Moses isn’t necessarily the person who wrote these books, but the traditions around these books and Moses’s go way, way, way back into antiquity. And often when we’re thinking about the book of Genesis and we here the book of Genesis, we think about the creation story and the origin of mankind. And, although this is one of the key components of Genesis, Genesis covers more history than any other book in the Bible. Millennium are covered in the book of Genesis. Actually, Genesis covers more time than the rest of the Old Testament put together. So, we’ll see, at the start, the creation, and go all the way until the children of Israel will meet, arrive in Egypt, and they grow into a mass of people that are becoming a nation. So, inside the first 11 chapters of Genesis we’ll cover a couple thousand years and a couple thousand miles. And then we’ll slow things down and cover a couple hundred years to the end of the book.

And, so, we begin. And we’ll read from the New International Version this week. Genesis chapter 1 and chapter 2.

Commentary:

Okay. So, day one, we are often running. We have launched ourselves into an epic adventure that will lead us through the entire Bible and conclude 364 days from now, just 364 steps. And they go by so fast. It’s crazy how that works. We’ll blink a couple times and then it will be Valentine’s Day. And then we’ll blink a couple of times and will it it’ll be June. But we’ve taken the first step in. And there is so much for us in the first step alone.

We were told our origin story. We were told that we are made in the likeness and image of God as human beings and we get a brief glimpse at Eden. We get to peer back into a time when nothing is broken and nothing is lost and all is as it should be. So, we get the briefest glimpse of how things were always supposed to be for us. But, unfortunately, it’s only a brief glimpse. Today we get to peer into how things were always supposed to be for us and tomorrow we’ll begin to find out what happened.

And as we begin the book of Matthew, and I will talk about Matthew little bit more tomorrow, but we begin the Christmas story and that begins in the book of Matthew by a genealogy. And while most don’t consider reading lists of names to be riveting, this one’s kind of important. You actually might want to look at it again because every one of those names, every one of those people, we’re going to meet them, and  we’re going to get to know a bit of their story as we travel through the Scriptures this year and understand their role in our spiritual ancestry. What we also got to meet in the book of Matthew, the most important person in human history, Jesus. And we’ll be spending quite a bit of time walking alongside him, sitting at his feet, listening to what He has to say about our lives here on planet Earth. And as we travel through the Gospels in the coming months we’ll see why it is that Jesus was so compelling. We’ll see how it came to be that He influenced the entire world until today. And we’ll reacquaint ourselves with why it is that He has shaped our hearts and lives.

In Psalms, we were given two divergent paths and shown where they will lead. And the Bible will do this to us often. It will continuously bring us to a crossroads and show us where the paths are going to go. And then we get to choose which path we’re going to walk down. And then it should come as no surprise when we reach our destination where we’ve gone. Psalms shows us that those who live righteously, who walk in the ways of the Lord, those people will be like trees planted by streams of water, which yield their fruit in season, and leaves do not wither, and whatever they do prospers. So that’s one way of living and one picture of where that road leads. But Psalms also tells us that’s not the way of the wicked. Those people are blown around in their lives like wind blows chaff. And in the final analysis, things won’t end up well.

And we launched into Proverbs today, which gave us words of introduction about what the book is all about. We read it to gain wisdom and instruction, to understand words of insight, to receive instruction in how to behave prudently, and how to do what’s right, how to be just and fair. And the Proverbs will deliver on its promise. It will be able to speak, in one sentence, things that touch the very, very motives of our hearts. Wisdom that has come through the ages and stood the test of time and that is not antiquated in any way whatsoever, just as immediate now as it ever was. And getting Proverbs into our lives in understanding what it’s telling us and allowing it to counsel us is like pouring unfiltered wisdom into our hearts. It will rescue us many times as we contemplate the weighty decisions that he year can bring.

So, we’ve set sail. And this thick book known as the Bible that has been confusing to so many as opened itself up to us. And we’ll find it’s not that confusing at all when it’s read in its context. And a whole new world will open up to us as we move through this together.

Prayer:

So, Father, we thank You for another day to be here together as a community and allow Your word to wash over us. We thank You for a new year and, with it, the reminder that we can start over again. And, so, we begin this new year inviting Your Holy Spirit to speak to us through Your word and to change us from the inside out. Come, Jesus, we pray in your name. Amen.

Announcements:

Okay. So, over the next several days, I’ll just be unpacking the Daily Audio Bible and how it works as we settle into the rhythm of this new year. But as we begin, I just want to say, welcome. Welcome to everyone that is here. I know many of you have stumbled over the new year line bruised and bloodied from all that’s been going on in your life and you’ve come here to make some sense of it all, to try to find out what the Bible actually says. And that was a good choice, because that’s what this community is all about. And some of you are here because you don’t feel you have anywhere else to go, either because of life circumstances or because of where you are in the world. Welcome. Some of you are here because of a New Year’s resolution, because you want to pay attention to your spirituality. Welcome. And so many of you, you were here yesterday, you were here all last year, maybe you’ve been here for years. It is so good to see you again.

This is a brand-new day. This is a brand-new year. And we can exhale and let go of everything that’s come before this moment and participate in what we know as sanctification, the daily step-by-step, moment by moment process of being made new again. This is going to be a year of hope and we’re going to find plenty of it in the Scriptures. And if we’ll stick with this rhythm, we’ll find it beginning to spill out over into our lives and out of our lives into the world. And I’m exhaling to. I am releasing the old year and I am breathless with anticipation over all that God will speak to us in this coming year through His word.

So, welcome. We have set sail and we’re all in this together. And our agenda is to read the Bible in its context and in its entirety and to invite God to speak through His word. So, no matter how it is that you ended up here, you are welcome here and you will find that to be true very quickly. No matter what has brought you here, it is a brand you day, and I am so excited to be on this journey with you.

I’m Brian I love you and I’ll be waiting for you here tomorrow.

Take Me Back - Urban Rescue

http://apple.co/2CkXnUG

It’s the way You always lead me
Through the fire and the flood
Your voice breaks the silence and I
I will respond

Oh my Love don’t let me go
Take me back to where we started from
Oh my Love don’t let me go
Take me back

It’s the way You always find me
Though You see my wandering heart
Your light shines through the darkness and I
I will respond

Oh my Love don’t let me go
Take me back to where we started from
Oh my Love don’t me go
Oh take me back

Into the light, into the light we come
With open arms and open hearts
Into the light, into the light we run
With open arms, and open hearts

Oh my Love don’t let me go
Take me back to where we started from
Oh my Love don’t me go
Oh take me back

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Monday January 1, 2018 (NIV)

Genesis 1-2

The Beginning

In the beginning(A) God created(B) the heavens(C) and the earth.(D) Now the earth was formless(E) and empty,(F) darkness was over the surface of the deep,(G) and the Spirit of God(H) was hovering(I) over the waters.

And God said,(J) “Let there be light,” and there was light.(K) God saw that the light was good,(L) and he separated the light from the darkness.(M) God called(N) the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.”(O) And there was evening, and there was morning(P)—the first day.

And God said,(Q) “Let there be a vault(R) between the waters(S) to separate water from water.” So God made the vault and separated the water under the vault from the water above it.(T) And it was so.(U) God called(V) the vault “sky.”(W) And there was evening, and there was morning(X)—the second day.

And God said, “Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place,(Y) and let dry ground(Z) appear.” And it was so.(AA) 10 God called(AB) the dry ground “land,” and the gathered waters(AC) he called “seas.”(AD) And God saw that it was good.(AE)

11 Then God said, “Let the land produce vegetation:(AF) seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds.(AG)” And it was so.(AH) 12 The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds(AI) and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.(AJ) 13 And there was evening, and there was morning(AK)—the third day.

14 And God said, “Let there be lights(AL) in the vault of the sky to separate the day from the night,(AM) and let them serve as signs(AN) to mark sacred times,(AO) and days and years,(AP) 15 and let them be lights in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth.” And it was so.(AQ) 16 God made two great lights—the greater light(AR) to govern(AS) the day and the lesser light to govern(AT) the night.(AU) He also made the stars.(AV) 17 God set them in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth, 18 to govern the day and the night,(AW) and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good.(AX) 19 And there was evening, and there was morning(AY)—the fourth day.

20 And God said, “Let the water teem with living creatures,(AZ) and let birds fly above the earth across the vault of the sky.”(BA) 21 So God created(BB) the great creatures of the sea(BC) and every living thing with which the water teems and that moves about in it,(BD) according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind.(BE) And God saw that it was good.(BF) 22 God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the water in the seas, and let the birds increase on the earth.”(BG) 23 And there was evening, and there was morning(BH)—the fifth day.

24 And God said, “Let the land produce living creatures(BI) according to their kinds:(BJ) the livestock, the creatures that move along the ground, and the wild animals, each according to its kind.” And it was so.(BK) 25 God made the wild animals(BL) according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds.(BM) And God saw that it was good.(BN)

26 Then God said, “Let us(BO) make mankind(BP) in our image,(BQ) in our likeness,(BR) so that they may rule(BS) over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky,(BT) over the livestock and all the wild animals,[a] and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”

27 So God created(BU) mankind(BV) in his own image,(BW)
in the image of God(BX) he created them;
male and female(BY) he created them.(BZ)

28 God blessed them and said to them,(CA) “Be fruitful and increase in number;(CB) fill the earth(CC) and subdue it. Rule over(CD) the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.(CE)

29 Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food.(CF) 30 And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds in the sky and all the creatures that move along the ground—everything that has the breath of life(CG) in it—I give every green plant for food.(CH)” And it was so.

31 God saw all that he had made,(CI) and it was very good.(CJ) And there was evening, and there was morning(CK)—the sixth day.

Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array.(CL)

By the seventh day(CM) God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work.(CN) Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy,(CO) because on it he rested(CP) from all the work of creating(CQ) that he had done.

Adam and Eve

This is the account(CR) of the heavens and the earth when they were created,(CS) when the Lord God made the earth and the heavens.

Now no shrub had yet appeared on the earth[b] and no plant had yet sprung up,(CT) for the Lord God had not sent rain on the earth(CU) and there was no one to work the ground, but streams[c] came up from the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground. Then the Lord God formed(CV) a man[d](CW) from the dust(CX) of the ground(CY) and breathed into his nostrils the breath(CZ) of life,(DA) and the man became a living being.(DB)

Now the Lord God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden;(DC) and there he put the man he had formed. The Lord God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground—trees(DD) that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the tree of life(DE) and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.(DF)

10 A river(DG) watering the garden flowed from Eden;(DH) from there it was separated into four headwaters. 11 The name of the first is the Pishon; it winds through the entire land of Havilah,(DI) where there is gold. 12 (The gold of that land is good; aromatic resin[e](DJ) and onyx are also there.) 13 The name of the second river is the Gihon; it winds through the entire land of Cush.[f] 14 The name of the third river is the Tigris;(DK) it runs along the east side of Ashur. And the fourth river is the Euphrates.(DL)

15 The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden(DM) to work it and take care of it. 16 And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden;(DN) 17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil,(DO) for when you eat from it you will certainly die.”(DP)

18 The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”(DQ)

19 Now the Lord God had formed out of the ground all the wild animals(DR) and all the birds in the sky.(DS) He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called(DT) each living creature,(DU) that was its name. 20 So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds in the sky and all the wild animals.

But for Adam[g] no suitable helper(DV) was found. 21 So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep;(DW) and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs[h] and then closed up the place with flesh. 22 Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib[i](DX) he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.

23 The man said,

“This is now bone of my bones
and flesh of my flesh;(DY)
she shall be called(DZ) ‘woman,’
for she was taken out of man.(EA)

24 That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united(EB) to his wife, and they become one flesh.(EC)

25 Adam and his wife were both naked,(ED) and they felt no shame.

Matthew 1:1-2:12

The Genealogy of Jesus the Messiah(A)(B)(C)

This is the genealogy[a] of Jesus the Messiah[b] the son of David,(D) the son of Abraham:(E)

Abraham was the father of Isaac,(F)

Isaac the father of Jacob,(G)

Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers,(H)

Judah the father of Perez and Zerah, whose mother was Tamar,(I)

Perez the father of Hezron,

Hezron the father of Ram,

Ram the father of Amminadab,

Amminadab the father of Nahshon,

Nahshon the father of Salmon,

Salmon the father of Boaz, whose mother was Rahab,(J)

Boaz the father of Obed, whose mother was Ruth,

Obed the father of Jesse,

and Jesse the father of King David.(K)

David was the father of Solomon, whose mother had been Uriah’s wife,(L)

Solomon the father of Rehoboam,

Rehoboam the father of Abijah,

Abijah the father of Asa,

Asa the father of Jehoshaphat,

Jehoshaphat the father of Jehoram,

Jehoram the father of Uzziah,

Uzziah the father of Jotham,

Jotham the father of Ahaz,

Ahaz the father of Hezekiah,

10 Hezekiah the father of Manasseh,(M)

Manasseh the father of Amon,

Amon the father of Josiah,

11 and Josiah the father of Jeconiah[c] and his brothers at the time of the exile to Babylon.(N)

12 After the exile to Babylon:

Jeconiah was the father of Shealtiel,(O)

Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel,(P)

13 Zerubbabel the father of Abihud,

Abihud the father of Eliakim,

Eliakim the father of Azor,

14 Azor the father of Zadok,

Zadok the father of Akim,

Akim the father of Elihud,

15 Elihud the father of Eleazar,

Eleazar the father of Matthan,

Matthan the father of Jacob,

16 and Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary,(Q) and Mary was the mother of Jesus who is called the Messiah.(R)

17 Thus there were fourteen generations in all from Abraham to David, fourteen from David to the exile to Babylon, and fourteen from the exile to the Messiah.

Joseph Accepts Jesus as His Son

18 This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about[d]: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit.(S) 19 Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet[e] did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce(T) her quietly.

20 But after he had considered this, an angel(U) of the Lord appeared to him in a dream(V) and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus,[f](W) because he will save his people from their sins.”(X)

22 All this took place to fulfill(Y) what the Lord had said through the prophet: 23 “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel”[g](Z) (which means “God with us”).

24 When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel(AA) of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. 25 But he did not consummate their marriage until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.(AB)

The Magi Visit the Messiah

After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea,(AC) during the time of King Herod,(AD) Magi[h] from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews?(AE) We saw his star(AF) when it rose and have come to worship him.”

When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. When he had called together all the people’s chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Messiah was to be born. “In Bethlehem(AG) in Judea,” they replied, “for this is what the prophet has written:

“‘But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,
are by no means least among the rulers of Judah;
for out of you will come a ruler
who will shepherd my people Israel.’[i](AH)

Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. He sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search carefully for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him.”

After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen when it rose went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. 11 On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him.(AI) Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts(AJ) of gold, frankincense and myrrh. 12 And having been warned(AK) in a dream(AL) not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route.

Psalm 1

BOOK I

Psalms 1–41

Psalm 1

Blessed is the one(A)
who does not walk(B) in step with the wicked(C)
or stand in the way(D) that sinners take(E)
or sit(F) in the company of mockers,(G)
but whose delight(H) is in the law of the Lord,(I)
and who meditates(J) on his law day and night.
That person is like a tree(K) planted by streams(L) of water,(M)
which yields its fruit(N) in season
and whose leaf(O) does not wither—
whatever they do prospers.(P)

Not so the wicked!
They are like chaff(Q)
that the wind blows away.
Therefore the wicked will not stand(R) in the judgment,(S)
nor sinners in the assembly(T) of the righteous.

For the Lord watches over(U) the way of the righteous,
but the way of the wicked leads to destruction.(V)
