Numbers 15:17-16:40, Mark 15:1-47, Psalm 54:1-7, Proverbs 11:5-6

Today is the 11th day of March, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian, it’s fantastic to be here with you today as we gather wherever we are, all over the earth, together in one place here at the Global Campfire, as we take the next step forward together. We have been working our way through the Book of Numbers, which is what we’ll…what we will return to today. The children of Israel and reached the precipice of entering into the Promised Land. Spies went into the land and came back with a report that essentially demoralized the people, who then rebelled. They have been sent back into the wilderness and we’ve discussed all of this over the last couple of days, as we encountered it. The children of Israel now, are in the wilderness a new generation is beginning to emerge. And so, we will see some things that are review because a new generation is emerging and is being taught what the expectations are as the people once again move toward the Promised Land. It’s just gonna take, it’s gonna take 40 years until the previous generation dies out. And so, off we go. We’re still working our way toward this Promised Land, and we are in the wilderness with the children of Israel. We’re reading from the Christian Standard Bible this week, which will be today. Numbers chapter 15 verse 17 through 16 verse 40.

Prayer:

Jesus, we love You and as we come to the story of Your crucifixion, Your trial, and death on our behalf in the Gospel of Mark, we take this moment to reflect upon it affect. In fact, Holy Spirit, we ask that You guide us to reflect upon it throughout this day, even as we continue to move through this…this season of repentance, that we know of as lent. May we take it to heart that You suffered tremendously on our behalf. That You loved us, even as You were being rejected by the ones that You love. We confess, we have rejected You in big and small ways over-and-over, repeatedly. And You have always come for us and welcomed us because like the people who were trying to destroy You, we don’t know what we’re doing any more than they did. Without Your Holy Spirit, we are wandering in the dark, completely unaware of what is happening. With the guidance of Your Holy Spirit, we realize the magnitude of what has happened in the world. With You coming to reveal that You are a Emmanuel, that God is with us and that there is no separation. We can enjoy fellowship, intimacy, friendship with You. So, we take these moments, as we encounter this story in the Gospel of Mark, to take the weightiness, to sit with it, to understand that sin leads to death. And that is what was supposed to be our story and You rescued us and we are eternally grateful. We will be grateful in a million years; we will be worshiping You for this in a billion years. We love You and we thank You and we pray this in Your name. Amen.

Prayer and Encouragements:

Hey DAB fam, this is Beloved in Texas and I’ve got some news on Thursday, that was a little unexpected. I was having my daughter assessed with the school psychiatrist for a possible ADHD and it, turns out we’re not really in that but her main problem is major depressive disorder and she’s only 12. So, I just wanna lift up all of us mothers, who have children with mental illness. Father, I just thank You so much for Your word and for Your grace and for Your sovereignty. Lord, I ask that You give us grace and peace and a special kind of wisdom in discernment, when we’re trying to love our children who have mental illness. Father, it breaks my heart to know that my daughter has felt the way that I have felt, which in turn, helps me to understand a little bit of how much it breaks Your heart. And I just continue to ask for that peace, I ask for supernatural joy in our home. All of the homes, supernatural peace and joy in the home in which they’re people living with mental illness. I’m just gonna leave it at that, cause I don’t even know what else to pray. In Jesus name. Amen. I love you DAB fam. And we are, Sparky and I, and the girl’s dad, biological father, working as hard as we can with the recommendations that were given by the psychiatrist. And we’re gonna, we’re gonna see victory of this, in Jesus name.

Hey DAB family, it’s James the Teacher. Just taking a moment from my work day to reach out and pray for everyone who is financially hurting right now. Father God, I want to pray that You’ll give them, give us strength, courage, wisdom, understanding to face the situations that we’re in. Lord, the grace of understanding and insight to see where we have been doing things wrong. God, the courage to face issues that we know how to fix but we’re just scared. Provision for opportunities to bring in extra income when it’s truly necessary. You’re grace God, to do extra work where we don’t have the energy to do it. Your word and Your Spirit, pour into us to replenish us when we are already exhausted. God, and yes, justice, where we have been ripped off and oppressed, deceived, robbed. But Lord, at the bottom, at the top, around in all of it, let it be for Your glory, that we might be able to not just get but give to Your kingdom, to Your causes, to glorify You. We love You and we praise You. In Jesus name.

Hey guys, it’s Sparky. I just wanted to reach out there, I wanted to say, hey. It’s not a social club and you guys that don’t ring out about your problems, some of us that do, and we’ve gotten comfortable with ringing out. We have problems, ring them out. We all have struggles and trials, every day. We all sit there and go, my problems is not as big as theirs. I want you to ring them out. Let us pray for you. I’m ring them out cause I want somebody to pray for me. And I know what this family is. I guess I say this, because no problems are bigger than anybody else’s problems. You’re loved. And every problem it gonna be a giant problem as long as you follow Jesus. Because you have to react the right way. So, I’m implore you, ring out when you’re having your problems and let God’s church pray for you. I love you.

This is God’s Chosen from California. Brian, thank you so much for your reading today, March 6th on the blessings. You encouraged us to bless someone. I declare blessings over you, Brian, and your entire family. I declare blessings over all those who are behind the crew at the Daily Audio. I declare blessings over all the people of Asia, all the people of Africa, all the people of Europe, all the people of North America, all the people of South America, all the people of Australia, all the people of Antarctica. I declare as we listen to the words and the teaching and the seeds that Brian plants every day, may God, almighty, continue to shower His blessings upon us. May the Lord bless us and protect us. May the Lord make His face shine upon us and be gracious to us. May the Lord look upon us all with favor and grant us His peace that surpasses all understanding. Thank you, Brian, for all that you do. May God continue to strengthen you and may He continue to bless you, above and beyond your imaginations. In Jesus name. Amen. [singing] The Lord bless you and keep you, may his face shine upon you. Be gracious to you. The Lord turn His face towards to you and give you peace. Amen, Amen, Amen. Amen, Amen, Amen.

Hello, my DAB family, this is Jamie in New Jersey, Standing on the Word of God. I humbly ask you to please pray with me. Dear Father in Heaven, thank You for being the author and perfecter of our faith. Father, in our lives there are many changing seasons. We go from feeling joyful and close to You, to grieving and feeling like You are distant. We wrestle with our doubts and questions, wondering if You even hear us or if You’re even real. Our faith decreases when we look around us, not up to You and Your purpose. No Christian goes through this life without feeling weak in their faith, at times. But we all can take comfort in knowing You are our Emmanuel. You are with us in every season, whether good or bad. Thank You, that You’ve carried us through the uncertainty of deep waters, through the flames of trial, and through the pain of hard bosses. Please forgive us for giving to much time and attention to other things, for looking to other people before coming to You first. We choose to press in close to You today and keep You first in our hearts and lives. Without You, we would truly fail. But with You, there is great hope. When we are weak, help us to look to You and to hold on tight to the truth that You love us and want the best for us. We pray in Jesus name. Amen. Thank you for praying with me, my brothers and sisters. I love each and every one of you. Have a blessed night.

Hey DAB family, this is PA Chappy. I am calling because I just celebrated my one-year anniversary as a full-time pastor and God has just been really blessing the ministry that He has called me to. In fact, this past Sunday, we added 5 new members to our church. And that’s exciting. We would have had a couple more but the husband of the family that would be joining our church, still needs to be baptized. So, we’re gonna be baptizing him this summer and then, they’ll be joining the church as well. And it will be our first immersion baptism in probably decades at this church. So, I am really excited. I just wanted to call in and give praise to the Lord. When I first took over the church, became the pastor, there was about 60 people in attendance and we’re averaging about 90 people in attendance. When I first came to this church, it was one family with some kids. Now we have about four or five families with children. So, the church is just growing in ways that only God can receive the honor and glory for this. So, I just wanted to, again, thank you all for your prayers. When I called in about a year ago about this, and I ask that you continue praying for the church that I’m at. And again, this is PA Chappy. Thank you. This is my eighth year of listening to the DAB. God has brought me from the depths of despair, from where I was even considering suicide 8 years ago. To now, I’m a senior pastor of a church. And so, God is just so good. And I just want to give Him all honor and glory. Thank you.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Saturday March 11, 2023 (NIV)

Numbers 15:17-16:40

17 The Lord said to Moses, 18 “Speak to the Israelites and say to them: ‘When you enter the land to which I am taking you(A) 19 and you eat the food of the land,(B) present a portion as an offering to the Lord.(C) 20 Present a loaf from the first of your ground meal(D) and present it as an offering from the threshing floor.(E) 21 Throughout the generations to come(F) you are to give this offering to the Lord from the first of your ground meal.(G)

Offerings for Unintentional Sins

22 “‘Now if you as a community unintentionally fail to keep any of these commands the Lord gave Moses(H) 23 any of the Lord’s commands to you through him, from the day the Lord gave them and continuing through the generations to come(I) 24 and if this is done unintentionally(J) without the community being aware of it,(K) then the whole community is to offer a young bull for a burnt offering(L) as an aroma pleasing to the Lord,(M) along with its prescribed grain offering(N) and drink offering,(O) and a male goat for a sin offering.[a](P) 25 The priest is to make atonement for the whole Israelite community, and they will be forgiven,(Q) for it was not intentional(R) and they have presented to the Lord for their wrong a food offering(S) and a sin offering.(T) 26 The whole Israelite community and the foreigners residing among them will be forgiven, because all the people were involved in the unintentional wrong.(U)

27 “‘But if just one person sins unintentionally,(V) that person must bring a year-old female goat for a sin offering.(W) 28 The priest is to make atonement(X) before the Lord for the one who erred by sinning unintentionally, and when atonement has been made, that person will be forgiven.(Y) 29 One and the same law applies to everyone who sins unintentionally, whether a native-born Israelite or a foreigner residing among you.(Z)

30 “‘But anyone who sins defiantly,(AA) whether native-born or foreigner,(AB) blasphemes the Lord(AC) and must be cut off from the people of Israel.(AD) 31 Because they have despised(AE) the Lord’s word and broken his commands,(AF) they must surely be cut off; their guilt remains on them.(AG)’”

The Sabbath-Breaker Put to Death

32 While the Israelites were in the wilderness,(AH) a man was found gathering wood on the Sabbath day.(AI) 33 Those who found him gathering wood brought him to Moses and Aaron and the whole assembly, 34 and they kept him in custody, because it was not clear what should be done to him.(AJ) 35 Then the Lord said to Moses, “The man must die.(AK) The whole assembly must stone him outside the camp.(AL) 36 So the assembly took him outside the camp and stoned him(AM) to death,(AN) as the Lord commanded Moses.(AO)

Tassels on Garments

37 The Lord said to Moses, 38 “Speak to the Israelites and say to them: ‘Throughout the generations to come(AP) you are to make tassels on the corners of your garments,(AQ) with a blue cord on each tassel. 39 You will have these tassels to look at and so you will remember(AR) all the commands of the Lord, that you may obey them and not prostitute yourselves(AS) by chasing after the lusts of your own hearts(AT) and eyes. 40 Then you will remember to obey all my commands(AU) and will be consecrated to your God.(AV) 41 I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt to be your God.(AW) I am the Lord your God.(AX)’”

Korah, Dathan and Abiram

16 Korah(AY) son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi, and certain Reubenites—Dathan and Abiram(AZ), sons of Eliab,(BA) and On son of Peleth—became insolent[b] and rose up against Moses.(BB) With them were 250 Israelite men, well-known community leaders who had been appointed members of the council.(BC) They came as a group to oppose Moses and Aaron(BD) and said to them, “You have gone too far! The whole community is holy,(BE) every one of them, and the Lord is with them.(BF) Why then do you set yourselves above the Lord’s assembly?”(BG)

When Moses heard this, he fell facedown.(BH) Then he said to Korah and all his followers: “In the morning the Lord will show who belongs to him and who is holy,(BI) and he will have that person come near him.(BJ) The man he chooses(BK) he will cause to come near him. You, Korah, and all your followers(BL) are to do this: Take censers(BM) and tomorrow put burning coals(BN) and incense(BO) in them before the Lord. The man the Lord chooses(BP) will be the one who is holy.(BQ) You Levites have gone too far!”

Moses also said to Korah, “Now listen, you Levites! Isn’t it enough(BR) for you that the God of Israel has separated you from the rest of the Israelite community and brought you near himself to do the work at the Lord’s tabernacle and to stand before the community and minister to them?(BS) 10 He has brought you and all your fellow Levites near himself, but now you are trying to get the priesthood too.(BT) 11 It is against the Lord that you and all your followers have banded together. Who is Aaron that you should grumble(BU) against him?(BV)

12 Then Moses summoned Dathan and Abiram,(BW) the sons of Eliab. But they said, “We will not come!(BX) 13 Isn’t it enough that you have brought us up out of a land flowing with milk and honey(BY) to kill us in the wilderness?(BZ) And now you also want to lord it over us!(CA) 14 Moreover, you haven’t brought us into a land flowing with milk and honey(CB) or given us an inheritance of fields and vineyards.(CC) Do you want to treat these men like slaves[c]?(CD) No, we will not come!(CE)

15 Then Moses became very angry(CF) and said to the Lord, “Do not accept their offering. I have not taken so much as a donkey(CG) from them, nor have I wronged any of them.”

16 Moses said to Korah, “You and all your followers are to appear before the Lord tomorrow—you and they and Aaron.(CH) 17 Each man is to take his censer and put incense in it—250 censers in all—and present it before the Lord. You and Aaron are to present your censers also.(CI) 18 So each of them took his censer,(CJ) put burning coals and incense in it, and stood with Moses and Aaron at the entrance to the tent of meeting. 19 When Korah had gathered all his followers in opposition to them(CK) at the entrance to the tent of meeting, the glory of the Lord(CL) appeared to the entire assembly. 20 The Lord said to Moses and Aaron, 21 “Separate yourselves(CM) from this assembly so I can put an end to them at once.”(CN)

22 But Moses and Aaron fell facedown(CO) and cried out, “O God, the God who gives breath to all living things,(CP) will you be angry with the entire assembly(CQ) when only one man sins?”(CR)

23 Then the Lord said to Moses, 24 “Say to the assembly, ‘Move away from the tents of Korah, Dathan and Abiram.’”

25 Moses got up and went to Dathan and Abiram, and the elders of Israel(CS) followed him. 26 He warned the assembly, “Move back from the tents of these wicked men!(CT) Do not touch anything belonging to them, or you will be swept away(CU) because of all their sins.(CV) 27 So they moved away from the tents of Korah, Dathan and Abiram.(CW) Dathan and Abiram had come out and were standing with their wives, children(CX) and little ones at the entrances to their tents.(CY)

28 Then Moses said, “This is how you will know(CZ) that the Lord has sent me(DA) to do all these things and that it was not my idea: 29 If these men die a natural death and suffer the fate of all mankind, then the Lord has not sent me.(DB) 30 But if the Lord brings about something totally new, and the earth opens its mouth(DC) and swallows them, with everything that belongs to them, and they go down alive into the realm of the dead,(DD) then you will know that these men have treated the Lord with contempt.(DE)

31 As soon as he finished saying all this, the ground under them split apart(DF) 32 and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them(DG) and their households, and all those associated with Korah, together with their possessions. 33 They went down alive into the realm of the dead,(DH) with everything they owned; the earth closed over them, and they perished and were gone from the community. 34 At their cries, all the Israelites around them fled, shouting, “The earth is going to swallow us too!”

35 And fire came out from the Lord(DI) and consumed(DJ) the 250 men who were offering the incense.

36 The Lord said to Moses, 37 “Tell Eleazar(DK) son of Aaron, the priest, to remove the censers(DL) from the charred remains and scatter the coals some distance away, for the censers are holy— 38 the censers of the men who sinned at the cost of their lives.(DM) Hammer the censers into sheets to overlay the altar,(DN) for they were presented before the Lord and have become holy. Let them be a sign(DO) to the Israelites.”

39 So Eleazar the priest(DP) collected the bronze censers brought by those who had been burned to death,(DQ) and he had them hammered out to overlay the altar, 40 as the Lord directed him through Moses. This was to remind the Israelites that no one except a descendant of Aaron should come to burn incense(DR) before the Lord,(DS) or he would become like Korah and his followers.(DT)

Mark 15

Jesus Before Pilate(A)

15 Very early in the morning, the chief priests, with the elders, the teachers of the law(B) and the whole Sanhedrin,(C) made their plans. So they bound Jesus, led him away and handed him over to Pilate.(D)

“Are you the king of the Jews?”(E) asked Pilate.

“You have said so,” Jesus replied.

The chief priests accused him of many things. So again Pilate asked him, “Aren’t you going to answer? See how many things they are accusing you of.”

But Jesus still made no reply,(F) and Pilate was amazed.

Now it was the custom at the festival to release a prisoner whom the people requested. A man called Barabbas was in prison with the insurrectionists who had committed murder in the uprising. The crowd came up and asked Pilate to do for them what he usually did.

“Do you want me to release to you the king of the Jews?”(G) asked Pilate, 10 knowing it was out of self-interest that the chief priests had handed Jesus over to him. 11 But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have Pilate release Barabbas(H) instead.

12 “What shall I do, then, with the one you call the king of the Jews?” Pilate asked them.

13 “Crucify him!” they shouted.

14 “Why? What crime has he committed?” asked Pilate.

But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify him!”

15 Wanting to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them. He had Jesus flogged,(I) and handed him over to be crucified.

The Soldiers Mock Jesus(J)

16 The soldiers led Jesus away into the palace(K) (that is, the Praetorium) and called together the whole company of soldiers. 17 They put a purple robe on him, then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on him. 18 And they began to call out to him, “Hail, king of the Jews!”(L) 19 Again and again they struck him on the head with a staff and spit on him. Falling on their knees, they paid homage to him. 20 And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him out(M) to crucify him.

The Crucifixion of Jesus(N)

21 A certain man from Cyrene,(O) Simon, the father of Alexander and Rufus,(P) was passing by on his way in from the country, and they forced him to carry the cross.(Q) 22 They brought Jesus to the place called Golgotha (which means “the place of the skull”). 23 Then they offered him wine mixed with myrrh,(R) but he did not take it. 24 And they crucified him. Dividing up his clothes, they cast lots(S) to see what each would get.

25 It was nine in the morning when they crucified him. 26 The written notice of the charge against him read: the king of the jews.(T)

27 They crucified two rebels with him, one on his right and one on his left. [28] [a] 29 Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads(U) and saying, “So! You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days,(V) 30 come down from the cross and save yourself!” 31 In the same way the chief priests and the teachers of the law mocked him(W) among themselves. “He saved others,” they said, “but he can’t save himself! 32 Let this Messiah,(X) this king of Israel,(Y) come down now from the cross, that we may see and believe.” Those crucified with him also heaped insults on him.

The Death of Jesus(Z)

33 At noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon.(AA) 34 And at three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”).[b](AB)

35 When some of those standing near heard this, they said, “Listen, he’s calling Elijah.”

36 Someone ran, filled a sponge with wine vinegar,(AC) put it on a staff, and offered it to Jesus to drink. “Now leave him alone. Let’s see if Elijah comes to take him down,” he said.

37 With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last.(AD)

38 The curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.(AE) 39 And when the centurion,(AF) who stood there in front of Jesus, saw how he died,[c] he said, “Surely this man was the Son of God!”(AG)

40 Some women were watching from a distance.(AH) Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joseph,[d] and Salome.(AI) 41 In Galilee these women had followed him and cared for his needs. Many other women who had come up with him to Jerusalem were also there.(AJ)

The Burial of Jesus(AK)

42 It was Preparation Day (that is, the day before the Sabbath).(AL) So as evening approached, 43 Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent member of the Council,(AM) who was himself waiting for the kingdom of God,(AN) went boldly to Pilate and asked for Jesus’ body. 44 Pilate was surprised to hear that he was already dead. Summoning the centurion, he asked him if Jesus had already died. 45 When he learned from the centurion(AO) that it was so, he gave the body to Joseph. 46 So Joseph bought some linen cloth, took down the body, wrapped it in the linen, and placed it in a tomb cut out of rock. Then he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb.(AP) 47 Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joseph(AQ) saw where he was laid.

Numbers 14:1-15:16, Mark 14:53-72, Psalms 53:1-6, Proverbs 11:4

Today is the 10th day of March, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I am Brian it is great to be here with you today. Every day…every day…this my favorite spot around the Global Campfire every day. Looking forward to it every day and glad to be here today as we take the next step forward. And our next step forward leads us back into the book of Numbers. And we are with the children of Israel, who had moved away from Mount Sinai and had moved to the precipice of entering the promised land. And before entering this land of promise some spies, one from each tribe of Israel were sent into the land to spy it out, to find out what’s up, what’s going on, what kind of people are there, what kind of cities are there, what kind of agriculture is there, what’s up in this promised land as they were preparing to enter. the spies came back and essentially gave the report that it's…it’s really an awesome land. It’s only that we can’t possibly take this land. We’re grasshoppers compared to the people in the land. And that is where we left off, like literally with that drama hanging in the air. And, so, as we begin our reading from the book of Numbers today that’s where we are. We are immediately going to feel the response of the Israelites as they get the report that there are giants in the land. So, we’re reading from the Christian Standard Bible this week. Numbers chapter 14 verse 1 through 15, verse 16.

Commentary:

Okay, so let’s just kind of catch ourselves up here on where we are in the book of Numbers. We have been at the precipice of entering the promised land. Like, I was saying yesterday, like we’ve been moving toward this since the book of Genesis and we have seen that it’s been a long view, a long promise, a promise given to Abraham that has taken centuries to get us to this place, the threshold of the promised land. And the children of Israel have been delivered from Egyptian slavery in very miraculous fashion. We went through the entire plagues. We saw their deliverance. We saw all of them leave. We watched them go into the wilderness and we also watched Egypt change their minds and start asking themselves, what have we done by kicking the Israelites out? Like this is going to destroy our economy. And, so, they go back after the Israelites who are encamped by the Red Sea, and they are walled in by mountains and ocean and here come the Egyptians. And God splits the Red Sea, and they go across on dry ground in the Egyptian army is destroyed. So, like these people have seen things that very few people ever get to witness. And they head into the wilderness. And they have trouble finding water and they grumble. They’re not satisfied with food, so they grumble. They come to the mountain of God and encamp around it and God is going to come and speak directly with them and they fear and ask Moses basically to be God’s spokesperson. And, so, Moses is on the top of the mountain receiving the revelation from God. Meanwhile, the people are down below the mountain building a golden calf to worship because they don’t know what happened Moses. And, so, they’ve decided that the golden calf, this is…this is the God, this…this is who led you out of Egypt. This is the one that did all the mighty acts. This is the one who has got us here. And they’re dancing around and worshiping this idol. Mosses has to come down because God is like, you gotta go down and see what they’re doing. And the 10 Commandments are broken there. Moses grinds up the golden calf and puts it into the water and then eventually we get all this revelation of the law and about the tabernacle and about the priesthood and then they move out because it’s time to live this. They are prepared. They have received the revelation of what the statutes and celebrations and sacrifice…like all of the things that will weave a culture together and knit them together with a common story. And they have to go live it now. And they wander around and we watched them complain more. We have no meat. You remember the meat we used to eat for free when we were slaves in Egypt? And, so, God sends them meat to eat. At every turn, every time they face something that’s gonna be hard or that seems difficult to sort of process, something that they can’t figure out in their own strength then they just throw up their hands and start complaining about their leaders, which is Moses and Aaron and Miriam and the priesthood, or they complain directly about God. Every time they face something that they can’t navigate on their own, they lose it, when they are in the wilderness to learn something, that they are dependent, that they are chosen people of God, that He will protect them, that He will guide them, that it doesn’t matter what they see or what their fears are because those aren’t real. God is with them, and they have to learn to trust. And, so, we get to the precipice of the promised land and the spies are sent in and the spies come back and say it’s not possible. And the people lose it again. And it gets really erratic in our reading today. If only we had died in the land of Egypt. If only we had died in this wilderness. Why is the Lord wanting us to go into this land where everybody’s gonna be plunder? It would’ve been better for us to die in the wilderness than to die in battle and our families be taken into another kind of slavery. We should go back to Egypt. Let’s get a leader. Let’s appoint a new leader who will take us back to Egypt. That’s their initial response to finding out that they may have to contend for this promised land. They may have to actually live into the message of the wilderness, they are utterly dependent on God. They must trust God. And, so, Moses and Aaron are falling on their faces before the Lord and begging for mercy because God is like alright, what else do I have to do? Do you not remember what has happened to you as I let you out of slavery as I destroyed the Egyptian army, your enemy, as I provided food and water for you in the wilderness, as I revealed myself to you and built up keep a lot of you changing your identity from slaves to chosen, as I’ve led you right here to the threshold of your promise, what else do I have to do? An in the end what God determines is essentially you have not learned the lesson of the wilderness yet. This wilderness is here to shape you so that you can boldly live your lives without fear knowing that I am with you right in the middle of your camp. I am right in the middle of this story. Until you realize that it’s not gonna work out for you in this land of promise. You have to turn back. And in the process God determines that everyone who had seen all the things that we just talked about from Egypt forward, they had gotten to see this with their very own eyes. And now there’s an emerging generation, the next generation is beginning to take its foothold and to take its leadership. And, so, all of these people who had seen all that God had done, they could poison this next generation. And, so, they are being instructed to turn back into the wilderness and head back toward the Red Sea. And of course, some people begin to realize the gravity of the situation, and are like, we’re sorry, we want to obey God now. We want to obey Him. We’re sorry. We’re…let…let’s go, let’s do it. Moses is like, yeah, the lesson isn’t learned, and God is not with you and if you go in it’s not gonna go well, which is exactly what they did. They rebelled again after being instructed by the Lord again. They decided, no, we’re ready to obey You now and they go in and they get pummeled. And, so, that’s where we find ourselves, heading back into the wilderness as a new generation emerges. And we will see some review of things that we may have heard before in the giving of the law because this new generation is being taught to do what their parents would not. And in the process of all of this, the mistrust and distrust of God in the face of hardship is dooming a generation to die in the wilderness and is burdening a future generation to go do what their parents wouldn’t. There’s a generation of people that have to rise up and take the promised land when they were supposed to be the first generation to live free in it. Trusting God in the wilderness is one of the most important lessons ever learn in our lives and we will continue to circle and lead ourselves into places of wilderness until we learn this. We all find ourselves wandering in the wilderness in our lives from time to time. We find ourselves in wilderness seasons. If we can just hearken back to what the wilderness teaches us in the Bible, it’s that the lesson here, the growth here is to become intimately acutely aware that we are utterly dependent on God and we must trust Him. It is the only way forward. It is the only way out of the wilderness. And if we think about our wilderness seasons, we realize that those seasons take an awful lot of energy. They take a lot of emotional energy because it’s hard, but they take a lot of energy because we’re using all of our mental capacity to try to figure out how to get ourselves out of it when the lesson is trust. There is a path out of this into promise. Trust. Move forward one step at a time and trust that we are utterly dependent on God. He is our source of life. There is no other place to place our hope. There is no other. Trust is the lesson here. And we are watching the children of Israel simply mimic our own stories. And maybe this is a good time to realize that they are staying in the wilderness longer than they needed to. And maybe that’s true of us. Maybe if we we’re in the wilderness right now and we begin to trust that we won’t know matter what things look like we have moved one step toward freedom every single day, one step toward promise every single day, as we trust in the goodness of God and the wisdom of God in our lives.

Prayer:

Father, we invite You into that. This touches all of us, every single one of us as it touched Your people. And as You continue to teach and train them this brings an enormous perspective. And, so, now we repent and begin to change the way we were looking at things and change our minds and run toward You and not with accusation wondering why You’re not doing what we want You to do, but we run to You for protection. We trust You to help us navigate the seasons of our lives and when we stop doing that we feel like were alone in the wilderness and that speaks so much. And, so, we are so…we are so grateful for what You teach us in the Scriptures in the stories of the lives of those who have gone before us. Come Holy Spirit show us how to trust You, how to put our full hope in You alone no matter where we are in life. We pray this in the name of Jesus. Amen.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Friday March 10, 2023 (NIV)

Numbers 14:1-15:16

The People Rebel

14 That night all the members of the community raised their voices and wept aloud.(A) All the Israelites grumbled(B) against Moses and Aaron, and the whole assembly said to them, “If only we had died in Egypt!(C) Or in this wilderness!(D) Why is the Lord bringing us to this land only to let us fall by the sword?(E) Our wives and children(F) will be taken as plunder.(G) Wouldn’t it be better for us to go back to Egypt?(H) And they said to each other, “We should choose a leader and go back to Egypt.(I)

Then Moses and Aaron fell facedown(J) in front of the whole Israelite assembly(K) gathered there. Joshua son of Nun(L) and Caleb son of Jephunneh, who were among those who had explored the land, tore their clothes(M) and said to the entire Israelite assembly, “The land we passed through and explored is exceedingly good.(N) If the Lord is pleased with us,(O) he will lead us into that land, a land flowing with milk and honey,(P) and will give it to us.(Q) Only do not rebel(R) against the Lord. And do not be afraid(S) of the people of the land,(T) because we will devour them. Their protection is gone, but the Lord is with(U) us.(V) Do not be afraid of them.”(W)

10 But the whole assembly talked about stoning(X) them. Then the glory of the Lord(Y) appeared at the tent of meeting to all the Israelites. 11 The Lord said to Moses, “How long will these people treat me with contempt?(Z) How long will they refuse to believe in me,(AA) in spite of all the signs(AB) I have performed among them? 12 I will strike them down with a plague(AC) and destroy them, but I will make you into a nation(AD) greater and stronger than they.”(AE)

13 Moses said to the Lord, “Then the Egyptians will hear about it! By your power you brought these people up from among them.(AF) 14 And they will tell the inhabitants of this land about it. They have already heard(AG) that you, Lord, are with these people(AH) and that you, Lord, have been seen face to face,(AI) that your cloud stays over them,(AJ) and that you go before them in a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night.(AK) 15 If you put all these people to death, leaving none alive, the nations who have heard this report about you will say, 16 ‘The Lord was not able to bring these people into the land he promised them on oath,(AL) so he slaughtered them in the wilderness.’(AM)

17 “Now may the Lord’s strength be displayed, just as you have declared: 18 ‘The Lord is slow to anger, abounding in love and forgiving sin and rebellion.(AN) Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation.’(AO) 19 In accordance with your great love, forgive(AP) the sin of these people,(AQ) just as you have pardoned them from the time they left Egypt until now.”(AR)

20 The Lord replied, “I have forgiven them,(AS) as you asked. 21 Nevertheless, as surely as I live(AT) and as surely as the glory of the Lord(AU) fills the whole earth,(AV) 22 not one of those who saw my glory and the signs(AW) I performed in Egypt and in the wilderness but who disobeyed me and tested me ten times(AX) 23 not one of them will ever see the land I promised on oath(AY) to their ancestors. No one who has treated me with contempt(AZ) will ever see it.(BA) 24 But because my servant Caleb(BB) has a different spirit and follows me wholeheartedly,(BC) I will bring him into the land he went to, and his descendants will inherit it.(BD) 25 Since the Amalekites(BE) and the Canaanites(BF) are living in the valleys, turn(BG) back tomorrow and set out toward the desert along the route to the Red Sea.[a](BH)

26 The Lord said to Moses and Aaron: 27 “How long will this wicked community grumble against me? I have heard the complaints of these grumbling Israelites.(BI) 28 So tell them, ‘As surely as I live,(BJ) declares the Lord, I will do to you(BK) the very thing I heard you say: 29 In this wilderness your bodies will fall(BL)—every one of you twenty years old or more(BM) who was counted in the census(BN) and who has grumbled against me. 30 Not one of you will enter the land(BO) I swore with uplifted hand(BP) to make your home, except Caleb son of Jephunneh(BQ) and Joshua son of Nun.(BR) 31 As for your children that you said would be taken as plunder, I will bring them in to enjoy the land you have rejected.(BS) 32 But as for you, your bodies will fall(BT) in this wilderness. 33 Your children will be shepherds here for forty years,(BU) suffering for your unfaithfulness, until the last of your bodies lies in the wilderness. 34 For forty years(BV)—one year for each of the forty days you explored the land(BW)—you will suffer for your sins and know what it is like to have me against you.’ 35 I, the Lord, have spoken, and I will surely do these things(BX) to this whole wicked community, which has banded together against me. They will meet their end in this wilderness; here they will die.(BY)

36 So the men Moses had sent(BZ) to explore the land, who returned and made the whole community grumble(CA) against him by spreading a bad report(CB) about it— 37 these men who were responsible for spreading the bad report(CC) about the land were struck down and died of a plague(CD) before the Lord. 38 Of the men who went to explore the land,(CE) only Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh survived.(CF)

39 When Moses reported this(CG) to all the Israelites, they mourned(CH) bitterly. 40 Early the next morning they set out for the highest point in the hill country,(CI) saying, “Now we are ready to go up to the land the Lord promised. Surely we have sinned!(CJ)

41 But Moses said, “Why are you disobeying the Lord’s command? This will not succeed!(CK) 42 Do not go up, because the Lord is not with you. You will be defeated by your enemies,(CL) 43 for the Amalekites(CM) and the Canaanites(CN) will face you there. Because you have turned away from the Lord, he will not be with you(CO) and you will fall by the sword.”

44 Nevertheless, in their presumption they went up(CP) toward the highest point in the hill country, though neither Moses nor the ark of the Lord’s covenant moved from the camp.(CQ) 45 Then the Amalekites and the Canaanites(CR) who lived in that hill country(CS) came down and attacked them and beat them down all the way to Hormah.(CT)

Supplementary Offerings

15 The Lord said to Moses, “Speak to the Israelites and say to them: ‘After you enter the land I am giving you(CU) as a home and you present to the Lord food offerings from the herd or the flock,(CV) as an aroma pleasing to the Lord(CW)—whether burnt offerings(CX) or sacrifices, for special vows or freewill offerings(CY) or festival offerings(CZ) then the person who brings an offering shall present to the Lord a grain offering(DA) of a tenth of an ephah[b] of the finest flour(DB) mixed with a quarter of a hin[c] of olive oil. With each lamb(DC) for the burnt offering or the sacrifice, prepare a quarter of a hin of wine(DD) as a drink offering.(DE)

“‘With a ram(DF) prepare a grain offering(DG) of two-tenths of an ephah[d](DH) of the finest flour mixed with a third of a hin[e] of olive oil,(DI) and a third of a hin of wine(DJ) as a drink offering.(DK) Offer it as an aroma pleasing to the Lord.(DL)

“‘When you prepare a young bull(DM) as a burnt offering or sacrifice, for a special vow(DN) or a fellowship offering(DO) to the Lord, bring with the bull a grain offering(DP) of three-tenths of an ephah[f](DQ) of the finest flour mixed with half a hin[g] of olive oil, 10 and also bring half a hin of wine(DR) as a drink offering.(DS) This will be a food offering, an aroma pleasing to the Lord.(DT) 11 Each bull or ram, each lamb or young goat, is to be prepared in this manner. 12 Do this for each one, for as many as you prepare.(DU)

13 “‘Everyone who is native-born(DV) must do these things in this way when they present a food offering as an aroma pleasing to the Lord.(DW) 14 For the generations to come,(DX) whenever a foreigner(DY) or anyone else living among you presents a food(DZ) offering(EA) as an aroma pleasing to the Lord, they must do exactly as you do. 15 The community is to have the same rules for you and for the foreigner residing among you; this is a lasting ordinance for the generations to come.(EB) You and the foreigner shall be the same before the Lord: 16 The same laws and regulations will apply both to you and to the foreigner residing among you.(EC)’”

Mark 14:53-72

Jesus Before the Sanhedrin(A)(B)

53 They took Jesus to the high priest, and all the chief priests, the elders and the teachers of the law came together. 54 Peter followed him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest.(C) There he sat with the guards and warmed himself at the fire.(D)

55 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin(E) were looking for evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death, but they did not find any. 56 Many testified falsely against him, but their statements did not agree.

57 Then some stood up and gave this false testimony against him: 58 “We heard him say, ‘I will destroy this temple made with human hands and in three days will build another,(F) not made with hands.’” 59 Yet even then their testimony did not agree.

60 Then the high priest stood up before them and asked Jesus, “Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?” 61 But Jesus remained silent and gave no answer.(G)

Again the high priest asked him, “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?”(H)

62 “I am,” said Jesus. “And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.”(I)

63 The high priest tore his clothes.(J) “Why do we need any more witnesses?” he asked. 64 “You have heard the blasphemy. What do you think?”

They all condemned him as worthy of death.(K) 65 Then some began to spit at him; they blindfolded him, struck him with their fists, and said, “Prophesy!” And the guards took him and beat him.(L)

Peter Disowns Jesus(M)

66 While Peter was below in the courtyard,(N) one of the servant girls of the high priest came by. 67 When she saw Peter warming himself,(O) she looked closely at him.

“You also were with that Nazarene, Jesus,”(P) she said.

68 But he denied it. “I don’t know or understand what you’re talking about,”(Q) he said, and went out into the entryway.[a]

69 When the servant girl saw him there, she said again to those standing around, “This fellow is one of them.” 70 Again he denied it.(R)

After a little while, those standing near said to Peter, “Surely you are one of them, for you are a Galilean.”(S)

71 He began to call down curses, and he swore to them, “I don’t know this man you’re talking about.”(T)

72 Immediately the rooster crowed the second time.[b] Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows twice[c] you will disown me three times.”(U) And he broke down and wept.

Psalm 53

Psalm 53[a](A)

For the director of music. According to mahalath.[b] A maskil[c] of David.

The fool(B) says in his heart,
“There is no God.”(C)
They are corrupt, and their ways are vile;
there is no one who does good.

God looks down from heaven(D)
on all mankind
to see if there are any who understand,(E)
any who seek God.(F)
Everyone has turned away, all have become corrupt;
there is no one who does good,
not even one.(G)

Do all these evildoers know nothing?

They devour my people as though eating bread;
they never call on God.
But there they are, overwhelmed with dread,
where there was nothing to dread.(H)
God scattered the bones(I) of those who attacked you;(J)
you put them to shame,(K) for God despised them.(L)

Oh, that salvation for Israel would come out of Zion!
When God restores his people,
let Jacob rejoice and Israel be glad!

Numbers 11:24-13:33, Mark 14:22-52, Psalm 52:1-9, Proverbs 11:1-3

Today is the ninth day of March, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian. It is fantastic to be here with you today, as we gather to take the next step forward together. And as always, the next step leads us to the place where we left off, and that will lead us back into the Book of Numbers. Today, we will read Numbers chapter 11 verse 24 through 13 verse 33. And just by way of reminder, we are in the wilderness with the children of Israel who are complaining about having to eat manna, and Moses had been complaining about having to do the job that he’s doing of leading these people. It is a burden that is crushing him. And so, we pick up the story Numbers 11:24 through 13:33.

Commentary:

Okay, so, yesterday in the Book of Numbers, we talked about obstacles and hardship. The children of Israel in the wilderness, complaining about having to eat manna and longing for what they used to get to eat when they were in bondage and slavery to the Egyptians. Moses, as the leader, being crushed by the weight of responsibility that he is facing in the wilderness. And so, both of them end up crying out, but as we see in today’s reading, God brought them quail and so they had so much meat to eat, couldn’t eat it. And we saw God being exasperated in and the whole situation because there’s a lesson being taught in the wilderness and that is that they are utterly dependent upon God, and that is a good, profoundly good thing because they are safe and the obstacles and endurance that they are having to learn is generated by their sense of lack, of what they don’t have, and how they feel unsafe and incapable of meeting their own desires. Why would that be exasperating to God? It’s because they are safe and they are cared for, what they are enduring is a fight within themselves. Can they truly trust God in the wilderness, or do they need to start thinking about making their own arrangements? We face the same things brothers and sisters, we face the same things ourselves and when we start trying to make our own arrangements, instead of following the safe path that God has for us through the wilderness, we end up staying in the wilderness, as we will soon see. Until the children of Israel truly leave behind their identity in slavery and put their full and absolute hope and trust in God, they can’t get forward. And we see that one playing out today because we actually reached the Promised Land today. We have been working toward getting to the Promised Land since the book of Genesis. Like we have been on a long journey to get to this point, and here we are. Everything is ready, the people know the customs, they know the laws, they know the rituals, they know the holidays. They know what they’re supposed to do, they know what they’re supposed to do every day and it’s baked into their culture. Everything is reminding them of who they are and where they’re going and who God is, and even with all of this, here we are at the precipice of the Promised Land. And spies are sent into the land, one from each tribe to go and spy out the land and we kind of travel, we don’t have a ton of narrative about their journeys, but we have some and we know that they went in, cut down some of the fruit in the Valley of Eshcol. That goes back to the book of Genesis. In fact, I remember we were going to the book of Genesis, and remember this place, remember this, remember the Valley of Eshcol here. Remember this because we’re gonna come back here and now we’re back here. The Valley of Eshcol is where the cave of Machpelah is. The cave of Machpelah is where Abraham, Isaac and Jacob are buried. It’s been centuries since the children of Israel have been anywhere near there. But on their journeys, spying out the land, they went through there and they would’ve been able to see this is true, this isn’t just stuff of lore and legend. This is true, this is our origin story. And then they come back, and they give a report. We can’t possibly take this land. We can’t do it. There are giants there. There are fortified cities there, it’s a beautiful land, flowing with milk and honey but we can’t take it, we look like grasshoppers to them. This is on the heels of God miraculously providing meat after their complaints in the wilderness. And we can work back all of God’s leadership in their lives, since he brought them out of the land of Egypt in miraculous fashion. He has been providing and sustaining them ever since. Even though at times they had to actually trust Him because, at times, they had run out of their own ability and here we are at the threshold, once again, they have determined that they’re not safe to trust in God and in their own strength, they cannot conquer this Land of Promise. We’ll have to see how that plays out. But we could look in our own lives and see how that plays out. We just have this idea that obstacles and hardship are always bad things they are labeled bad, they bring bad emotions. We associate hard and bad emotions to them and so, we try to avoid in every possible way that we can, anything that makes us endure. I’m the same way, hundred percent, I’m on the same page, doing the same thing. But I’ve learned, now that I’ve lived long enough to learn this is that you can do everything you possibly can to arrange to avoid these things, but there are, is no way, there’s no way to perfectly avoid any kind of challenge, hardship, conflict or endurance. And we watched that even in the life of our Savior Jesus today, because Jesus is in the Garden of Gethsemane in our reading today, asking God if the cup could pass, if there were an…an alternative path, if there were another way. He’s crying out to His disciples enough to…to say that like the anxiety within Him is to the point of death. Or to just quote it from Mark, “I am deeply grieved to the point of death, remain here and stay awake.” Even Jesus, in this moment, doesn’t want to be left alone. Like He is enduring His own human mortality and the shortness of it that is left to remain. Even Jesus endured, and Jesus is one with the Father, this is what we believe as Christians. So even God endured. Jesus demonstrated absolute and utter trust all the way through death, only to find resurrection. So, there are some poignant and profound lessons for our lives, as we move through the wilderness with the children of Israel, watch their story and as we’re able to move over into the Gospels and watch Jesus model so much of this for us, so that we can see what both ends of the spectrum look like. Let’s continue to meditate upon it, to continue to invite the Holy Spirit to show us the places that we do not have utter and complete trust for God or trust at all for God, and that this creates all kinds of disconnects inside of us, because we’re trying to trust Him to do something, but when He’s not doing it the way that we expected or the way we wanted and we reach in and hijack the story and try to write a different chapter, than He’s trying to tell through us. Understanding that we can’t avoid some of the challenges in life. But that those challenges in life are challenges within us because they are beyond our control. But from God’s perspective, there’s nothing and our response in trusting God to lead us through whatever wilderness we are walking through, is the right choice, this safe choice. Like this self-preservation choice is to trust God in the wilderness. Let’s give it some thought.

Prayer:

So, Holy Spirit, come. Because in the wilderness, when we feel like we are being pressed and that we have navigated into a place where there’s no way out. That is the time to trust You and it is the time that we don’t, it’s a time that we make ourselves crazy trying to figure out our own solutions, when none of this is a problem for You. None of this stuff is a problem for You. And if we had a long view, none of this is a problem for us either. It’s an opportunity for us to trust You, and so, come, Holy Spirit. And help us to understand that sometimes the challenges that we face are invitations to go deeper, take us deeper, we pray, in Jesus name. Amen.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Thursday March 9, 2023 (NIV)

Numbers 11:24-13:33

24 So Moses went out and told the people what the Lord had said. He brought together seventy of their elders and had them stand around the tent. 25 Then the Lord came down in the cloud(A) and spoke with him,(B) and he took some of the power of the Spirit(C) that was on him and put it on the seventy elders.(D) When the Spirit rested on them, they prophesied(E)—but did not do so again.

26 However, two men, whose names were Eldad and Medad, had remained in the camp. They were listed among the elders, but did not go out to the tent. Yet the Spirit also rested on them,(F) and they prophesied in the camp. 27 A young man ran and told Moses, “Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp.”

28 Joshua son of Nun,(G) who had been Moses’ aide(H) since youth, spoke up and said, “Moses, my lord, stop them!”(I)

29 But Moses replied, “Are you jealous for my sake? I wish that all the Lord’s people were prophets(J) and that the Lord would put his Spirit(K) on them!”(L) 30 Then Moses and the elders of Israel returned to the camp.

31 Now a wind went out from the Lord and drove quail(M) in from the sea. It scattered them up to two cubits[a] deep all around the camp, as far as a day’s walk in any direction. 32 All that day and night and all the next day the people went out and gathered quail. No one gathered less than ten homers.[b] Then they spread them out all around the camp. 33 But while the meat was still between their teeth(N) and before it could be consumed, the anger(O) of the Lord burned against the people, and he struck them with a severe plague.(P) 34 Therefore the place was named Kibroth Hattaavah,[c](Q) because there they buried the people who had craved other food.

35 From Kibroth Hattaavah the people traveled to Hazeroth(R) and stayed there.

Miriam and Aaron Oppose Moses

12 Miriam(S) and Aaron began to talk against Moses because of his Cushite wife,(T) for he had married a Cushite. “Has the Lord spoken only through Moses?” they asked. “Hasn’t he also spoken through us?”(U) And the Lord heard this.(V)

(Now Moses was a very humble man,(W) more humble than anyone else on the face of the earth.)

At once the Lord said to Moses, Aaron and Miriam, “Come out to the tent of meeting, all three of you.” So the three of them went out. Then the Lord came down in a pillar of cloud;(X) he stood at the entrance to the tent and summoned Aaron and Miriam. When the two of them stepped forward, he said, “Listen to my words:

“When there is a prophet among you,
I, the Lord, reveal(Y) myself to them in visions,(Z)
I speak to them in dreams.(AA)
But this is not true of my servant Moses;(AB)
he is faithful in all my house.(AC)
With him I speak face to face,
clearly and not in riddles;(AD)
he sees the form of the Lord.(AE)
Why then were you not afraid
to speak against my servant Moses?”(AF)

The anger of the Lord burned against them,(AG) and he left them.(AH)

10 When the cloud lifted from above the tent,(AI) Miriam’s skin was leprous[d]—it became as white as snow.(AJ) Aaron turned toward her and saw that she had a defiling skin disease,(AK) 11 and he said to Moses, “Please, my lord, I ask you not to hold against us the sin we have so foolishly committed.(AL) 12 Do not let her be like a stillborn infant coming from its mother’s womb with its flesh half eaten away.”

13 So Moses cried out to the Lord, “Please, God, heal her!(AM)

14 The Lord replied to Moses, “If her father had spit in her face,(AN) would she not have been in disgrace for seven days? Confine her outside the camp(AO) for seven days; after that she can be brought back.” 15 So Miriam was confined outside the camp(AP) for seven days,(AQ) and the people did not move on till she was brought back.

16 After that, the people left Hazeroth(AR) and encamped in the Desert of Paran.(AS)

Exploring Canaan

13 The Lord said to Moses, “Send some men to explore(AT) the land of Canaan,(AU) which I am giving to the Israelites.(AV) From each ancestral tribe(AW) send one of its leaders.”

So at the Lord’s command Moses sent them out from the Desert of Paran. All of them were leaders of the Israelites.(AX) These are their names:

from the tribe of Reuben, Shammua son of Zakkur;

from the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat son of Hori;

from the tribe of Judah, Caleb son of Jephunneh;(AY)

from the tribe of Issachar, Igal son of Joseph;

from the tribe of Ephraim, Hoshea son of Nun;(AZ)

from the tribe of Benjamin, Palti son of Raphu;

10 from the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel son of Sodi;

11 from the tribe of Manasseh (a tribe of Joseph), Gaddi son of Susi;

12 from the tribe of Dan, Ammiel son of Gemalli;

13 from the tribe of Asher, Sethur son of Michael;

14 from the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi son of Vophsi;

15 from the tribe of Gad, Geuel son of Maki.

16 These are the names of the men Moses sent to explore(BA) the land. (Moses gave Hoshea son of Nun(BB) the name Joshua.)(BC)

17 When Moses sent them to explore Canaan,(BD) he said, “Go up through the Negev(BE) and on into the hill country.(BF) 18 See what the land is like and whether the people who live there are strong or weak, few or many. 19 What kind of land do they live in? Is it good or bad? What kind of towns do they live in? Are they unwalled or fortified? 20 How is the soil? Is it fertile or poor? Are there trees in it or not? Do your best to bring back some of the fruit of the land.(BG)” (It was the season for the first ripe grapes.)(BH)

21 So they went up and explored the land from the Desert of Zin(BI) as far as Rehob,(BJ) toward Lebo Hamath.(BK) 22 They went up through the Negev and came to Hebron,(BL) where Ahiman, Sheshai and Talmai,(BM) the descendants of Anak,(BN) lived. (Hebron had been built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.)(BO) 23 When they reached the Valley of Eshkol,[e](BP) they cut off a branch bearing a single cluster of grapes. Two of them carried it on a pole between them, along with some pomegranates(BQ) and figs.(BR) 24 That place was called the Valley of Eshkol because of the cluster of grapes the Israelites cut off there. 25 At the end of forty days(BS) they returned from exploring the land.(BT)

Report on the Exploration

26 They came back to Moses and Aaron and the whole Israelite community at Kadesh(BU) in the Desert of Paran.(BV) There they reported to them(BW) and to the whole assembly and showed them the fruit of the land.(BX) 27 They gave Moses this account: “We went into the land to which you sent us, and it does flow with milk and honey!(BY) Here is its fruit.(BZ) 28 But the people who live there are powerful, and the cities are fortified and very large.(CA) We even saw descendants of Anak(CB) there.(CC) 29 The Amalekites(CD) live in the Negev; the Hittites,(CE) Jebusites(CF) and Amorites(CG) live in the hill country;(CH) and the Canaanites(CI) live near the sea and along the Jordan.(CJ)

30 Then Caleb(CK) silenced the people before Moses and said, “We should go up and take possession of the land, for we can certainly do it.”

31 But the men who had gone up with him said, “We can’t attack those people; they are stronger than we are.”(CL) 32 And they spread among the Israelites a bad report(CM) about the land they had explored. They said, “The land we explored devours(CN) those living in it. All the people we saw there are of great size.(CO) 33 We saw the Nephilim(CP) there (the descendants of Anak(CQ) come from the Nephilim). We seemed like grasshoppers(CR) in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them.”

Mark 14:22-52

22 While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it(A) and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take it; this is my body.”

23 Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and they all drank from it.(B)

24 “This is my blood of the[a] covenant,(C) which is poured out for many,” he said to them. 25 “Truly I tell you, I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”(D)

26 When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.(E)

Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial(F)

27 “You will all fall away,” Jesus told them, “for it is written:

“‘I will strike the shepherd,
and the sheep will be scattered.’[b](G)

28 But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.”(H)

29 Peter declared, “Even if all fall away, I will not.”

30 “Truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “today—yes, tonight—before the rooster crows twice[c] you yourself will disown me three times.”(I)

31 But Peter insisted emphatically, “Even if I have to die with you,(J) I will never disown you.” And all the others said the same.

Gethsemane(K)

32 They went to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” 33 He took Peter, James and John(L) along with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled. 34 “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death,”(M) he said to them. “Stay here and keep watch.”

35 Going a little farther, he fell to the ground and prayed that if possible the hour(N) might pass from him. 36 “Abba,[d] Father,”(O) he said, “everything is possible for you. Take this cup(P) from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.”(Q)

37 Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Simon,” he said to Peter, “are you asleep? Couldn’t you keep watch for one hour? 38 Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.(R) The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”(S)

39 Once more he went away and prayed the same thing. 40 When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. They did not know what to say to him.

41 Returning the third time, he said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The hour(T) has come. Look, the Son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners. 42 Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!”

Jesus Arrested(U)

43 Just as he was speaking, Judas,(V) one of the Twelve, appeared. With him was a crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests, the teachers of the law, and the elders.

44 Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The one I kiss is the man; arrest him and lead him away under guard.” 45 Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, “Rabbi!”(W) and kissed him. 46 The men seized Jesus and arrested him. 47 Then one of those standing near drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.

48 “Am I leading a rebellion,” said Jesus, “that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? 49 Every day I was with you, teaching in the temple courts,(X) and you did not arrest me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled.”(Y) 50 Then everyone deserted him and fled.(Z)

51 A young man, wearing nothing but a linen garment, was following Jesus. When they seized him, 52 he fled naked, leaving his garment behind.

Psalm 52

Psalm 52[a]

For the director of music. A maskil[b] of David. When Doeg the Edomite(A) had gone to Saul and told him: “David has gone to the house of Ahimelek.”

Why do you boast of evil, you mighty hero?
Why do you boast(B) all day long,(C)
you who are a disgrace in the eyes of God?
You who practice deceit,(D)
your tongue plots destruction;(E)
it is like a sharpened razor.(F)
You love evil(G) rather than good,
falsehood(H) rather than speaking the truth.[c]
You love every harmful word,
you deceitful tongue!(I)

Surely God will bring you down to everlasting ruin:
He will snatch you up and pluck(J) you from your tent;
he will uproot(K) you from the land of the living.(L)
The righteous will see and fear;
they will laugh(M) at you, saying,
“Here now is the man
who did not make God his stronghold(N)
but trusted in his great wealth(O)
and grew strong by destroying others!”

But I am like an olive tree(P)
flourishing in the house of God;
I trust(Q) in God’s unfailing love
for ever and ever.
For what you have done I will always praise you(R)
in the presence of your faithful people.(S)
And I will hope in your name,(T)
for your name is good.(U)

Numbers 10:1-11:23, Mark 14:1-21, Psalms 51:1-19, Proverbs 10:31-32

Today is the 8th day of March welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I am Brian it is great to be here with you today around the Global Campfire as we gather to take the next step forward. And I’m grateful that we get to take the next step forward each and every day. Our…our next step forward, the one we’re gonna take now, the step forward for today will lead us back into the book of Numbers and we will continue our journey with the children of Israel in the wilderness. Numbers chapter 10 verse 1 through 11 verse 23 today.

Commentary:

Okay. So, in the gospel of Mark we have reached the portion of the narrative where we are encountering the last supper of Jesus, the betrayal of Jesus, the last days of Jesus. And I mentioned when we went through this in Matthew, we should always give reverence to what we’re reading. We get to encounter this story four times, once in each of the Gospels - Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John - and then we move forward into the book of Acts and into the letters and we leave the narratives of the ministry of Jesus behind. And, so, when we encounter these stories, giving them the weightiness that they are due it’s important especially now that we’re in this season of Lent, a season of repentance, a season of reflection, a season of trying to slow things down enough to realize the impact of our lives and understand that sin, as we have allowed it to direct our lives has only ever let us to destruction, and that a Savior came to rescue us. That’s the story that we are moving into in the gospel of Mark. And, so, just again reminding us as we move through this in the coming days that…that…that we immerse ourselves and meditate upon the story of our salvation.

Then we turn backward into the book of Numbers and our reading began poignantly, and I quote, “the people began complaining openly before the Lord about hardship.” Like that one sentence right there describes a generous portion of our lives, especially our spiritual lives. “The people began complaining openly before the Lord about hardship.” A couple verses later…later we get to hear what they were saying as they were complaining about hardship. “Who will feed us meat. We remember free fish we ate in Egypt along with the cucumbers, melons, leaks, onions and garlic, but now our appetite is gone. There’s nothing to look at but this manna.” So, what they’re saying is, ha, this journey into freedom has gotten difficult. “Do you guys remember how great it was when we were slaves when we could eat fish and cucumbers and melons and leaks and onion and garlic. Now all we have is this manna.” So, what they’re saying is slavery fed us better. God’s provision out here in the wilderness that is sustaining our very lives, we’re sick of this. This is too hard. This is too difficult. And then Moses hears all this, and he gets provoked by it, but he’s not like mad, specifically at the Israelites. He is also complaining before the Lord. “Why have you brought such trouble on your servant? Why are you angry with me and why do you burden me with all these people? Did I conceive all these people? Did I give birth to them so you could tell me to carry them at my breast like a nursing mother carries a baby to the land that you swore to give to their ancestors? Where am I supposed to get meat? How can I feed all these people? I can’t carry all of this by myself. They’re too much for me.” And then…and then the best. “If you’re going to treat me like this, please kill me right now if I have found favor with you and don’t let me see my misery anymore.” So, Moses is one of the greatest leaders in the Bible, absolutely revered above all in Judaism. Like Moses…this is who the law came through. This is Moses, the prophet that led them out of slavery in Egypt. This is a man who was the friend of God. And now they have all received instruction from God at the mountain. They have made preparation to do all of the things that God commanded them to do. They have built the tabernacle and made it portable, a place for God to dwell among them wherever they go right in the middle of the story wherever they go. He is providing for them daily all that they need, but it’s getting hard and challenging because now it’s not a concept. They have to live this. And in living this, they’ve had to go further into the desert to further understand the message of the wilderness that they are utterly dependent upon God. They are learning to trust. It as if God is saying I have a path through this wilderness into the land of promise. I have a way prepared for you. I will protect you every step of the way. I will take you. And when you face things that you don’t understand you have got to remember that I have got you. I understand. Like you’ve gotta stop trying to hijack the story and write something different. You’ve got to trust me. You’ve got to follow the path that I’ve made for you. If you’re going to deviate, it’s not going to work. You’ve got to learn this out here in the wilderness. And they’re not. They’re thinking about how good it was to be in slavery and bondage, and Moses is exasperated as a leader because he is carrying too much. He’s trying to own too much of this because he as a leader also has to learn the same lesson of utter dependence upon God. Even as I’m retelling the story that we just read in the book of Numbers it should become apparent that this is a mirror into our own stories through our own wilderness journeys. We get into places that we don’t understand or situations that feel constricting, we feel like we’re in the wilderness and it’s hard and very very easily we find ourselves thinking about better days, the days of bondage. Somehow, we look back and forget that we were being destroyed before our very eyes and we were rescued. And sometimes as leaders we can be leading and nobody’s listening and no matter what we do we can’t seem to keep anyone on the same page and it gets exasperating and we’re just simply trying to serve God by leading His people to Jesus. And, so, we see both in this example, today, the children of Israel and Moses facing their own set of difficulties in the wilderness. This is the mighty children of God, the chosen people. This is the mighty Moses, the prophet of the most-high God. And as it turns out they didn’t have anything that we don’t. In fact, we have much more than they did. We still find ourselves in the same places in our lives. And, so, let’s once again watch how everything plays out, allow it to be a mirror into our own souls, and realize that scriptures are certainly telling us the story of the children of Israel, but through the story they’re telling us how our own story. There is a way forward. That doesn’t mean we won’t have to endure the way forward, but we will accomplish the way forward if we will realize that we are utterly dependent upon God. We will begin to realize that we wrestle with this a lot because what we would prefer is that by our own power we would be able to arrange for the kind of life that we want and that God would empower us to do that when the invitation is to go on a grand adventure of life with God, trusting Him completely for all things in every conceivable way. Some things for us to give some thought to today.

Prayer:

Father, we invite you into that. We confess. We confess that when we feel self-sufficient and that we have power and control to arrange for things that we feel the most stable even though we still navigate ourselves and all kinds of trouble regardless…regardless of where the path is leading us until we realize that trusting you is the only way forward. We will continue to try to hijack things, write a different story than you are telling. May we relax. May we exhale. May we realize that we are safe, that you are with us and will never leave us. May we trust you instead of reflecting back upon the good old days of bondage that we used to have. May we trust you, because where we are going is into the promise. We pray this in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Good morning it’s the 28th of February here in the UK and I just heard the prayer request from a gentleman who refers to himself as Joseph in the Pit. He was requesting peer for his marriage, in particular his wife due to childhood trauma has left __. they’ve been married for 25 years. And I call you Joseph at this time. Joseph I was so moved by your prayer request because it is almost identical to the situation that I have in my own life. I am very similar to your wife in that I had childhood trauma and that led to control in ways that were unhealthy in my marriage. I’ve been married for 26 years, and I just started counseling last week. And, so, my prayer for you is the same prayer that I pray for myself and my marriage. Father God, I pray for Your intervention. I pray for You to convict Joseph’s wife. Convict her of her fear and of her anxiety to want to control issues. I pray Lord that she finds the courage to make herself vulnerable in Your site so that she’s able to hand over…hand over those issues of control and fear to You Lord, lay them in Your hands so that You may be able to take hold of her and…and minister to her heart Lord for the healing that she needs. I pray for Your protection over Joseph and his wife’s marriage Lord. May You guard his heart also as they hand him over to You. I pray that You hold him dearly and closely to You and I pray this in Jesus’ name. I come against the enemies’ ploy to try to prevent them from having a healthy, strong marriage. And I pray this Lord trusting that You will speak to her and that she will lay herself vulnerably at Your feet and nail to the cross all her fears and anxieties and seek the help that they require in Jesus’ name Amen.

Hi everyone, this is Willow from Washington. I don’t have any prayer request today, but I just wanted to share some scripture that I read the other day that’s just been very encouraging to me. I actually made it my lock screen, home screen on my laptop so I could just be reminded of it every day. But…so it’s gonna be psalm 71 versus 19 through 22. Your righteousness O God reaches to the highest heavens. You’ve done such wonderful things. Who can compare with You O God. You’ve allowed me to suffer much hardship, but You restore me to life again and lift me up from the depths of the earth. You will restore me to even greater honor and comfort me once again then I will praise You with music on the harp because You are faithful to Your promises O God. I just wanted to share that scripture with you guys. I’m praying for all of you and I hope you have a wonderful rest of your day.

Hey DAB family this is Julian in Miami FL and I’m calling in to pray for Cynthia who requested prayer for her eyes and gave such a beautiful prayer for the whole DAB community. And I just want to pray over your eyes Cynthia and say, Lord Jesus we know that all things are possible through You, we know that all healing is possible through You, we know that miracles are possible through You. And in Your name Lord we pray for our sister Cynthia. We pray over her eyes Lord, and we pray that You may heal her fully 110%. Lord, we know that these things are possible through You when we call upon Your name Lord Jesus Christ. Love you, Cynthia. Take care. Bye-bye.

Hi neighbors it’s Lisa the Encourager. I am wanted Work in Progress to know…first of all I’m going to call you WIP because that’s easy…work in progress…easy for us to all remember, but I just wanted you to know that ever since you called in, I have been praying for your daughter. Every day I have her on my prayer list and I am praying that especially that considering she was a follower of Daily Audio Bible and she is part of this community I feel like we all should in unison just call out to God and pray that the angels on earth will just come to her aid and be able to help your daughter to be safe, be rescued, not only in her mind and soul and body but her heart and just be changed through the Holy Spirit. And I just want us to all please…just all pray together for WIPs daughter and pray this in the name of the Father the Son and the Holy Spirit. God, please Lord God, please put people in her life Lord that will be able to give her safety, give her security Lord. Put people in her life that can help her God, any resources that can come her way God, that can protect her. And we just pray dear Lord, that she will hit her rock bottom, that her rock bottom is now God and now is the time that you are going to send your angels to protect her and guide her back to you and even back to this community God. I pray all of this in the name of the Father the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen. Love you.

Hi this is Winnie. I’ve called once before a couple months ago, I guess. My nephew had called. He had lost his wife and he was left raising his three kids. Just an update. They’ve been evicted from their home and the two older kids are living with my niece and her sister. They sleep on the floor and the couch and then the baby is staying with my mother, my 80-year-old parents Monday through Friday. Friday. I pick the baby up and keep him through Sunday just to give my parents a break. I work full time, so they help out in that way, and I help them. But the father has pretty much abandoned these kids. He shows up to take the baby to daycare and that’s about it. We don’t see him again especially on the weekends we don’t hear from him. So, I just want to ask the DAB family to just pray for this situation because my parents, like I said, are in their 80s. They can’t do this and it’s becoming very taxing on everybody. The girls who don’t have their own bedrooms anymore are just pretty much in limbo. And, you know, I understand that he’s bereaved, but he has…he has children. And, so, I just ask for your prayers for that. And…and that’s pretty much all right now. I’m thankful for this DAB community and I pray for you all. Thank you.

Hey DAB family I’ve got a couple of prayers that I want to pray. It’s Alexis the psalmist on the prayer wall. First of all, I want to pray for my sister in Europe whose mom passed away after suffering from some longtime illness and her dad is struggling. Lord God I just lift up my sister. I pray father God that as You have given her the strength to continue to believe in You, to continue to trust in You when it’s just been a month since You lost her mom since her mom returned to be with You, I pray Father God that You give her and her family the strength to get through the season. Comfort her by Your precious Holy Spirit and give her grace and strength to move forward each and every day. Yes, there will be hard times, but Lord God I pray that through each and every hard time, each and every single wave of grief You are with her and with her dad and You draw them to You in Jesus’ name. I also pray for Kim in California who has been through quite a time with the floods and the storms. Lord God, it says in Your word in the book of Isaiah that we’ll go through the fire and we won’t be burned and we’ll go through the floods and we will not be overwhelmed. So, Lord God I just speak that word over her and her husband. I pray Father God that even through the health challenges that he is facing he won’t be overwhelmed. I pray that there will be a peace in their home, a peace that surpasses understanding, that surpasses their surroundings and just to keep them. And last of all I pray for Emma and Beloved on the Beach Lord God, the move that they have made. Lord God, I know that You direct the path of the righteous. So, Lord God I pray that You direct Emma specifically to good friends and good counsel in Jesus’ name. Amen.
