Numbers 16:41-18:32, Mark 16:1-20, Psalms 55:1-23, Proverbs 11:7

Today is the 12th day of March. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian. It is my joy and honor and privilege to come around this global campfire together with you. I’ve thrown a couple brand-new big logs on. We’ve got a roaring light and warmth here. And, so, we just took come in out of whatever’s going on, day or night, out of the cold and out of the dark and warm ourselves around this global campfire as we feel one another’s presence. The fact of the matter is that whenever we listen to the Daily Audio Bible we are not listening to it alone. It doesn’t matter what time of day were doing it. So, here we are around the global campfire ready to take the next step. The next step will take us back into the book of Numbers and some of the chaos that’s brewing as is the children of Israel get their minds around the fact that they’re not going into the promised land, that they’re going to be in the desert for a generation. We’ll pick that story backup today, Numbers chapter 16 verse 41 through 18 verse 32 today.

Commentary:

Okay. So, being betrayed by somebody, especially somebody we trust and hold close, that can be such a profoundly damaging thing to our heart, right, because it touches everything, especially if we love that person. And that betrayal can change the course of our lives. And if you’ve ever experienced this then you know what I’m talking about. And the fact is that at one point or another during our lives you probably experience some form of the trail and usually when we’re going through that it feels like we’re the only one in the world going through it. So, let me just read a couple excerpts from our reading in Psalms today. “My heart is in anguish within me, the terrors of death fallen upon me, fear and trembling come up on me and horror overwhelms me. Ruin is in its midst. Oppression and fraud do not depart from its marketplace. For it is not an enemy who taunts me then I could bear it. It is not an adversary who deals insolently with me, then I could hide from him. It is, you, my equal, my companion, my familiar friend, his speech was as smooth as butter, yet war was in his heart. His words were softer than oil, yet they were drawn swords.” Okay. So, I mean we’re getting to know David’s heart through the Psalms, even though we haven’t met David in the Bible yet, although we will. And David wrote this. So, obviously these kinds of feelings have been going on for thousands of years. And David wasn’t just a king. He was a well respected poet and musician. And, so, often what we find in the Psalms is like a masterful articulation of the issues that we find in our hearts, but we don’t exactly know how to give language to them. And the Psalms gives us language and we can say something out loud. This is how it feels, or this is what I’m facing. Well, then it’s exposed, it’s not this nebulous dark cloud anymore. It’s a clear obstacle, but we can see it. And in this case David’s talking about betrayal and his words are like a hand reaching out over time offering solidarity, hope. And as David reached a crescendo of this particular Psalm, this song, where his hope lies becomes clear in the midst of the madness. And may we hold onto this and may it come clear in the midst of ours. “I call to God and the Lord will save me. Evening and morning and at noon I utter my complaint and moan and He hears my voice. He redeems my soul in safety from the battle that I wage for many are arrayed against me.” So, let’s all take heart today. We’re not alone. We’ll never be alone. The Lord hears our voices, right? He will walk with us. He will walk with us and He will carry us, if necessary through this. In fact, He’s the only one, right? He’s the only one we can let into this wounded place. He’s the only one who can heal our broken heart.

Prayer:

Holy Spirit, we’ve been opening our hearts to You for a lot of reasons and inviting You to do a lot of things and You are and we’re grateful. As disruptive as it might be, as bumpy as it might be, as less smooth sailing as we might’ve expected we can feel You in it and it feels like work that needs to be done and so we’re grateful, but in what has been brought up today, we don’t need solutions per se, we need You, we need comfort, we need to feel Your presence wrapping around us. We need to know were not alone, we need to know that You’ll get down into the mud and drag us out and carry us forward if that’s what’s necessary. And, so, we’re reaching to You. We surrender to You. We stop thrashing around in all of this and we calm down like a baby at its mother’s breast and invite Your Holy Spirit to come carry us forward. Come Holy Spirit we pray. In Jesus’ name we ask. Amen.

Numbers 16:41-18:32

41 But on the next day all the congregation of the people of Israel (A)grumbled against Moses and against Aaron, saying, “You have killed the people of the Lord.” 42 And when the congregation had assembled against Moses and against Aaron, they turned toward the tent of meeting. And behold, (B)the cloud covered it, and (C)the glory of the Lord appeared. 43 And Moses and Aaron came to the front of the tent of meeting, 44 and the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 45 (D)“Get away from the midst of this congregation, that I may consume them in a moment.” (E)And they fell on their faces. 46 And Moses said to Aaron, “Take your censer, and put fire on it from off the altar and lay incense on it and carry it quickly to the congregation and make atonement for them, for (F)wrath has gone out from the Lord; the plague has begun.” 47 So Aaron took it as Moses said and ran into the midst of the assembly. And behold, the plague had already begun among the people. And he put on the incense and made atonement for the people. 48 And he stood between the dead and the living, and (G)the plague was stopped. 49 Now those who died in the plague were 14,700, (H)besides those who died in the affair of Korah. 50 And Aaron returned to Moses at the entrance of the tent of meeting, when the plague was stopped.

Aaron's Staff Buds

17 [a] The Lord spoke to Moses, saying, (I)“Speak to the people of Israel, and get from them staffs, one for each fathers' house, from all their chiefs according to their fathers' houses, twelve staffs. Write each man's name on his staff, and write Aaron's name on the staff of Levi. For there shall be one staff for the head of each fathers' house. Then you shall deposit them in the tent of meeting before the testimony, (J)where I meet with you. And the staff of the man (K)whom I choose shall sprout. Thus I will make to cease from me (L)the grumblings of the people of Israel, which they grumble against you.” Moses spoke to the people of Israel. And all their chiefs gave him staffs, one for each chief, according to their fathers' houses, twelve staffs. And the staff of Aaron was among their staffs. And Moses deposited the staffs before the Lord in (M)the tent of the testimony.

On the next day Moses went into the tent of the testimony, and behold, the staff of Aaron for the house of Levi had sprouted and put forth buds and produced blossoms, and it bore ripe almonds. Then Moses brought out all the staffs from before the Lord to all the people of Israel. And they looked, and each man took his staff. 10 And the Lord said to Moses, “Put back (N)the staff of Aaron before the testimony, to be kept (O)as a sign for the rebels, (P)that you may make an end of their grumblings against me, lest they die.” 11 Thus did Moses; as the Lord commanded him, so he did.

12 And the people of Israel said to Moses, “Behold, we perish, we are undone, we are all undone. 13 (Q)Everyone who comes near, who comes near to the tabernacle of the Lord, shall die. Are we all to perish?”

Duties of Priests and Levites

18 So the Lord said to Aaron, “You and your sons and your father's house with you shall (R)bear iniquity connected with the sanctuary, (S)and you and your sons with you shall bear iniquity connected with your priesthood. And with you bring your brothers also, the tribe of Levi, the tribe of your father, that they may (T)join you and (U)minister to you while you and your sons with you are before the tent of the testimony. They shall keep guard over you and (V)over the whole tent, (W)but shall not come near to the vessels of the sanctuary or to the altar (X)lest they, and you, die. They shall join you and keep guard over the tent of meeting for all the service of the tent, (Y)and no outsider shall come near you. And you shall (Z)keep guard over the sanctuary and over the altar, (AA)that there may never again be wrath on the people of Israel. (AB)And behold, I have taken your brothers the Levites from among the people of Israel. (AC)They are a gift to you, given to the Lord, to do the service of the tent of meeting. And (AD)you and your sons with you shall guard your priesthood for all that concerns the altar and (AE)that is within the veil; and you shall serve. I give your priesthood as a gift,[b] and (AF)any outsider who comes near shall be put to death.”

Then the Lord spoke to Aaron, “Behold, (AG)I have given you charge of the contributions made to me, all the consecrated things of the people of Israel. I have given them to you (AH)as a portion and to your sons as a perpetual due. This shall be yours of the most holy things, reserved from the fire: every offering of theirs, every grain offering of theirs and every (AI)sin offering of theirs and every (AJ)guilt offering of theirs, which they render to me, shall be most holy to you and to your sons. 10 In a most holy place shall you eat it. Every male may eat it; it is holy to you. 11 This also is yours: the contribution of their gift, all the (AK)wave offerings of the people of Israel. I have given them to (AL)you, and to your sons and daughters with you, as a perpetual due. (AM)Everyone who is clean in your house may eat it. 12 (AN)All the best of the oil and all the best of the wine and of the grain, (AO)the firstfruits of what they give to the Lord, I give to you. 13 The first ripe fruits of all that is in their land, (AP)which they bring to the Lord, shall be yours. (AQ)Everyone who is clean in your house may eat it. 14 (AR)Every devoted thing in Israel shall be yours. 15 (AS)Everything that opens the womb of all flesh, whether man or beast, which they offer to the Lord, shall be yours. Nevertheless, (AT)the firstborn of man you shall redeem, and the firstborn of unclean animals you shall redeem. 16 And their redemption price (AU)(at a month old you shall redeem them) you shall fix at five shekels[c] in silver, according to the shekel of the sanctuary, (AV)which is twenty gerahs. 17 (AW)But the firstborn of a cow, or the firstborn of a sheep, or the firstborn of a goat, you shall not redeem; they are holy. You shall sprinkle their blood on the altar and shall burn their fat as a food offering, with a pleasing aroma to the Lord. 18 But their flesh shall be yours, as (AX)the breast that is waved and as the right thigh are yours. 19 (AY)All the holy contributions that the people of Israel present to the Lord I give to you, and to your sons and daughters with you, as a perpetual due. (AZ)It is a covenant of salt forever before the Lord for you and for your offspring with you.” 20 And the Lord said to Aaron, “You shall have no inheritance in their land, neither shall you have any portion among them. (BA)I am your portion and your inheritance among the people of Israel.

21 (BB)“To the Levites I have given every tithe in Israel for an inheritance, in return for their service that they do, their service in the tent of meeting, 22 (BC)so that the people of Israel do not come near the tent of meeting, (BD)lest they bear sin and die. 23 But (BE)the Levites shall do the service of the tent of meeting, (BF)and they shall bear their iniquity. It shall be a perpetual statute throughout your generations, and among the people of Israel they shall have no inheritance. 24 For the tithe of the people of Israel, which (BG)they present as a contribution to the Lord, I have given to the Levites for an inheritance. Therefore I have said of them that they shall have no inheritance (BH)among the people of Israel.”

25 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 26 “Moreover, you shall speak and say to the Levites, ‘When you take from the people of Israel the tithe that I have given you from them for your inheritance, then you shall present a contribution from it to the Lord, (BI)a tithe of the tithe. 27 (BJ)And your contribution shall be counted to you as though it were the grain of the threshing floor, and as the fullness of the winepress. 28 So you shall also present a contribution to the Lord from all your tithes, which you receive from the people of Israel. And from it you shall give the Lord's contribution to Aaron the priest. 29 Out of all the gifts to you, you shall present every contribution due to the Lord; from each its best part is to be dedicated.’ 30 Therefore you shall say to them, ‘When you have offered from it the best of it, (BK)then the rest shall be counted to the Levites as produce of the threshing floor, and as produce of the winepress. 31 And you may eat it in any place, you and your households, for it is (BL)your reward in return for your service in the tent of meeting. 32 And you shall (BM)bear no sin by reason of it, when you have contributed the best of it. But you shall not (BN)profane the holy things of the people of Israel, lest you die.’”

Mark 16

The Resurrection

16 (A)(B)When the Sabbath was past, (C)Mary Magdalene, (D)Mary the mother of James, and (E)Salome (F)bought spices, so that they might go and anoint him. And very early on the first day of the week, when the sun had risen, they went to the tomb. And they were saying to one another, “Who will roll away (G)the stone for us from the entrance of the tomb?” And looking up, they saw that the stone had been rolled back—(H)it was very large. And (I)entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, (J)dressed in (K)a white robe, and (L)they were alarmed. And he said to them, (M)“Do not be alarmed. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has risen; he is not here. See the place where they laid him. But go, tell his disciples and Peter that (N)he is going before you to Galilee. There you will see him, (O)just as he told you.” And they went out and fled from the tomb, for trembling and astonishment had seized them, and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.

[Some of the earliest manuscripts do not include 16:9–20.][a]

Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene

[[Now when he rose early on the first day of the week, (P)he appeared first to (Q)Mary Magdalene, (R)from whom he had cast out seven demons. 10 (S)She went and told those who had been with him, (T)as they (U)mourned and wept. 11 But when they heard that he was alive and had been seen by her, they (V)would not believe it.

Jesus Appears to Two Disciples

12 (W)After these things (X)he appeared in (Y)another form to two of them, as they were walking into the country. 13 (Z)And they went back and told the rest, but they did not believe them.

The Great Commission

14 Afterward (AA)he appeared (AB)to the eleven themselves as they were reclining at table, and he rebuked them for their (AC)unbelief and (AD)hardness of heart, because (AE)they had not believed those who saw him after he had risen. 15 And he said to them, (AF)“Go into all the world and (AG)proclaim the gospel to (AH)the whole creation. 16 (AI)Whoever believes and is (AJ)baptized (AK)will be saved, but (AL)whoever (AM)does not believe will be condemned. 17 And (AN)these signs will accompany those who believe: (AO)in my name they will cast out demons; (AP)they will speak in new tongues; 18 (AQ)they will pick up serpents with their hands; and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them; (AR)they will lay their hands (AS)on the sick, and they will recover.”

19 So then the Lord Jesus, (AT)after he had spoken to them, (AU)was taken up into heaven and (AV)sat down at the right hand of God. 20 And they went out and preached everywhere, while (AW)the Lord worked with them and confirmed (AX)the message (AY)by accompanying signs.]]

  1. Mark 16:9 Some manuscripts end the book with 16:8; others include verses 9–20 immediately after verse 8. At least one manuscript inserts additional material after verse 14; some manuscripts include after verse 8 the following: But they reported briefly to Peter and those with him all that they had been told. And after this, Jesus himself sent out by means of them, from east to west, the sacred and imperishable proclamation of eternal salvation. These manuscripts then continue with verses 9–20

Psalm 55

Cast Your Burden on the Lord

To the choirmaster: with (A)stringed instruments. A Maskil[a] of David.

55 (B)Give ear to my prayer, O God,
and hide not yourself from my plea for mercy!
Attend to me, and answer me;
I am restless (C)in my complaint and I (D)moan,
because of the noise of the enemy,
because of the oppression of the wicked.
For they (E)drop trouble upon me,
and in anger they bear a grudge against me.

My heart is in anguish within me;
(F)the terrors of death have fallen upon me.
Fear and trembling come upon me,
and (G)horror (H)overwhelms me.
And I say, “Oh, that I had wings like a dove!
I would fly away and be at rest;
(I)yes, I would wander far away;
I would lodge in the wilderness; Selah
I would hurry to find a shelter
from (J)the raging wind and tempest.”

Destroy, O Lord, (K)divide their tongues;
for I see (L)violence and strife in the city.
10 Day and night they go around it
on its walls,
and (M)iniquity and trouble are within it;
11 ruin is in its midst;
(N)oppression and fraud
do not depart from its marketplace.

12 For it is not an enemy who taunts me—
then I could bear it;
it is not an adversary who (O)deals insolently with me—
then I could hide from him.
13 (P)But it is you, a man, my equal,
my companion, my familiar friend.
14 We used to take sweet counsel together;
within God's house we walked in (Q)the throng.
15 Let death steal over them;
let them go down to Sheol (R)alive;
for evil is in their dwelling place and in their heart.

16 But I call to God,
and the Lord will save me.
17 (S)Evening and (T)morning and at (U)noon
I (V)utter my complaint and moan,
and he hears my voice.
18 He redeems my soul in safety
from the battle that I wage,
for (W)many are arrayed against me.
19 God will give ear and humble them,
he who is (X)enthroned from of old, Selah
because they do not (Y)change
and do not fear God.

20 My companion[b] (Z)stretched out his hand against his friends;
he violated his covenant.
21 His (AA)speech was (AB)smooth as butter,
yet war was in his heart;
his words were softer than oil,
yet they were (AC)drawn swords.

22 (AD)Cast your burden on the Lord,
and he will sustain you;
(AE)he will never permit
the righteous to be moved.

23 But you, O God, (AF)will cast them down
into (AG)the pit of destruction;
men of (AH)blood and treachery
shall not (AI)live out half their days.
But I will (AJ)trust in you.

Numbers 15:17-16:40, Mark 15:1-47, Psalms 54:1-7, Proverbs 11:5-6

Today is the 11th day of March. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian. It is a pleasure, it is a joy, and truly an honor to be here…just to be here at all. To be here around the global campfire together with you, what…wat an honor that we can come together no matter where we are on this planet and take another step forward in God’s word. So, we’re reading from the English Standard Version this week We’re working our way through the book of Numbers. Spies have come out of the promised land with a less than stellar report. The less than stellar report has spread throughout the camp. A herd mentality has assembled itself. People are talking about going in…like going in and taking the promised land even though God won’t go with them. Others are talking to go back and asking if they can be slaves in Egypt again. And that’s where we find ourselves. Moses and Aaron are on their faces before the Lord begging God not to destroy these people who want to stone them. Numbers chapter 15 verse 17 through 16 verse 40 today.

Commentary:

Okay. So, even as we kind of get going in our work week this week and even as we mentioned last week, just last Wednesday, so, just a few days ago, we began the season of Lent with Ash Wednesday. So here we find ourselves at the beginning of the season of Lent moving ourselves toward Easter and we are encountering the story of the crucifixion - the arrest, the trial, the death of Jesus, and the aftermath. And, of course, the ultimate aftermath of the death of Jesus was that Jesus was resurrected back to life, but, you know, some days passed and you can only imagine, if you’d put all of your hope in someone and someone’s claims and you believed with all your heart but then you watched that person die then you’re  gonna have to have a new level of faith that reaches beyond what you think you know, right? I mean, because if you’ve want someone die and then laid in a tomb then, I mean, it stands to reason that their not coming back. So, you’ve got to…if you believe that they’re going to come back you’ve gotta reach in faith beyond yourself. And we see that the disciples and those who were following Jesus, you know, they had a considerable struggle in that area. Fair enough. I mean, so would we. At least so would I. And, so, here we are in this season. In the Old Testament we’re watching the repercussions of sin. In the New Testament we see how that had grown to the point that the son of God could be killed at the hands of his chosen people. Ironically throughout our church history, we’ve exacerbated the problem. There’s been so much anti-Semitism over this kind of thing read into the Scriptures and then the Jewish people have been persecuted throughout history when the bottom line friends is that we’re all culpable. Unless you’re perfect your culpable in and of yourself in your own strengths. There isn’t a more stark picture of the cost or price of sin then to see the Savior of our souls, our Creator, our friend that sticks closer than a brother with spikes attaching him to a cross. And that is, that is where we are supposed to be focusing our hearts attention in this particular season called Lent. The price of sin, where sin leads, what it’s outcomes will do to us. We talked yesterday about deception and deception is something that we must invite the Holy Spirit into as we move toward Easter if we’re gonna observe this season. And whether you do or not is totally up to you, but since we’re reading the story of the crucifixion and were right here in the season and it’s worth at least talking about because we’re supposed to understand what this cost. Cause when we understand that something cost something precious, well then, that’s how it gets its value. That’s how human beings give value to something and it allows us to open our hearts and realize every bit of deception, every bit of rebelliousness, every bit of whatever would separate us from God, whatever it is that’s within us, it is killing us. It may not kill us dead, but it is poison to our souls and it is leading us away from God and we’re supposed to be aware of that and vigilant about it and enduring through it and resisting and rejecting it. And, so, in this season, that’s when we open our hearts and invite God, whatever. Like, look in my life, I have tried to put in my life everything of your spirit that I can but I am not capable of ordering myself properly. Whatever is going on I surrender, I submit. I invite you to rearrange whatever needs to be rearranged in my life.

Prayer:

Father, that is our prayer. Whatever is in our lives we give You permission to remove it, to elevate, to demote it, to re-prioritize it. Whatever doesn’t belong in our lives, take out. Whatever is missing from our lives, insert. We open ourselves fully before You, contemplating how much You love us and what it cost to bring us near. And, so, we trust You and ask You to order our lives appropriately so that as we emerge from this season, having fully contemplated what it cost to bring us our salvation we will also come out of this season with great rejoicing because You didn’t stay dead, You were resurrected. And, so, all that You have reordered in our lives is now in alignment and we rejoice and go into the year experiencing the repercussions of the resurrection rather than the repercussions of sin. Come Holy Spirit we pray. In Jesus’ name we ask. Amen.

One of the main things that we’re talking about right now because it’s coming up here in just few weeks is the More Gathering for women. And, of course, the More Gathering has traditionally taken place in the mountains of North Georgia about an hour outside of Atlanta near Jasper, Georgia. In fact, the More Gathering has only ever been there, but this is the final year that the More Gathering will be there at least for now. And not exactly sure. We’re just following the Lord. And I’m saying that season has drawn to a close. And, so, we want to celebrate what God has done on the top of that mountain, we want to rejoice, we want to all come back together and move through this and allow God to come again on Sharp Top mountain. So, you can get all the details for the More Gathering for women at moregathering.com or you can go to dailyaudiobible.com and go to the Initiatives section and that’ll take you to the same place. And indeed, we have been praying and interceding over every aspect of this event for months. And, so, we’ve been praying for all of you who will be in attendance and we’re very much looking forward to all that God will do. So, I hope to see you there.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hi, my name is Jamie and I’m calling in response to the prayer requests on March 6th. God has his way in everyone’s life. Lord we praise you. Anyone who is struggling and in need of prayer, I pray that there is peace upon your life and strength within your heart. Know that whatever struggles you face God is always __ way. God can handle anything. Talk to Him as your heavenly Father and He will listen, He will listen and never forsake you. I want to reach out to Angela who spoke on her suicidal thoughts. Angela, I’ve been there, I know how hard it is. Please know its Satan’s voice, that’s not God. Overcome evil with good. In moments of weakness Satan’s attack is armed every excuse to distance us from God. I have overcome Satan’s attempts. It’s been recent, over the past month or two. And since then I’m filled with peace and purpose. I will never turn back. Know Angela that you’re not alone. Go to church during the day. That is God’s sanctuary, that Satan can’t reach you there. You are strong. Don’t give up on yourself. Your daughter keeps you happy and when she’s not around God is your Savior. Trust in God. Know that your life is a blessing to the world. Angela you are worthy do not grieve for the joy of the Lord is your strength. This too shall pass.

Hi family this is Melissa from Albertville Alabama. Kristi from Kentucky. Thank God girl. I heard your testimony this morning and I tell you, you gave me chills, but my mama always told me sometimes when you have a little hinderance like a blown-out tire or a kid getting sick in their clothes, maybe God is keeping you from trouble, keeping you from an accident or something. So, I’m the type of person that always likes to be on time but sometimes there’s a reason why we can’t get where we need to get on time because God might be saving us from something. So, I just wanted to let you know I thank God you’re okay Kristi. We love you. I’m so glad you’re back. And family, please pray for Alabama, Tennessee, I think Georgia. We’re under the gun again and on Saturday we’re supposed to get severe weather again so you all please, please, please let’s keep us lifted up. And some of the DAB kids I was thinking about. Norman, Harmony, Joshua, little Jillian, I’m wondering how she’s doing. And I can’t think of all the kids. Y’all keep Gabby lifted up also. I love you all so much. Love you Brian. love you Jill. Bye-bye.

Hey fellow DABbers this is Joe the Protector from Georgia. It’s March 8th at about 735 in the morning. Should have called in a couple days ago, should have called in more than even that. But anyhow, I’ve got someone new to protect. My daughter had her baby March 6th at 1220 in the afternoon. Little girl 614 and 19 pounds or 19 inches long. I’m sorry. 6 lbs. 14 oz. 19 inches long. Anyhow, so just wanted to call in and just ask for prayers in that whole situation just with my daughter being a new mom and everything. So, if you all will just please lift that up. Also, I heard Kristi from Kentucky call in about being in the middle of the storm due to travels. Well, praise the Lord you weren’t in the middle of it; however, we were, but weren’t affected by any means. So, the storm hit us probably on 10 miles on each side of my…where I live that. And, so, it went on either side of my house and didn’t affect us at all. Had some trees swaying but nothing adverse. So, praise the Lord even though there was massive destruction. So, just pray for the ones that did have the destruction and loss of lives. All right. Love you all. Have a blessed day.

Good morning family this is Lisa from Illinois. I am calling for prayer for my 16-year-old daughter Catherine. She is getting heavy into drugs and my husband and I are doing everything we can to help her, but she’s made it clear she doesn’t want help and pretty much any time she leaves the house she’s finding a way to get drugs. So, we literally are a point we don’t we don’t know what to do anymore. She finds a way to get it school, at her job and that’s pretty much all we let her do now because we can’t let her leave the house otherwise. I just ask for prayer for wisdom and that she comes to her senses. Thank you, family. Bye-bye.

Numbers 14:1-15:16, Mark 14:53-72, Psalms 53:1-6, Proverbs 11:4

Today is March 10th. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian and it is a pleasure to be here with you as we turn the knob and step into a brand-new week together, one that is bright and shiny, it’s all out in front of us. Nothing’s gone right or wrong and we get to choose how we’re gonna live into it, and one of the ways we’re choosing is to take the next steps forward through this week as we continue on the journey that will take us through the entire Bible this year. Since we have a brand-new week we’ve got a new translation. We’ll read from the English Standard Version this week and we’ll pick up where we left off yesterday, Numbers chapter 14 verse 1 through 15 verse 16 today.

Commentary:

Okay. So, in the book of Numbers, spies have been sent out from the wilderness of Zinn to spy out the land and it’s go time. Like, literally this is where we find ourselves. It’s go time. They are to move into the promised land and their families, these little children who have come out of Egypt, these little children who have been born in the wilderness, they’re gonna grow up free, first generation of free people in the land of promise that took centuries to bring about. And the spies go into the land out of the wilderness of Zinn and its…well the irony is that we were just standing looking out over the wilderness of Zinn’s just a couple of weeks ago. So, this all becomes immediate and alive. And the spies go in, this is a famous story, and they come back and they say there are giants in the land, right? We’re grasshoppers next to them. There’s no way we can do this, all except for the two spies Joshua and Caleb. And then though the news spreads throughout the camp like a wildfire. And, so, the entire culture that has come out of slavery, has met with God at Mount Sinai, has received the customs and rituals for their governance, and are standing at the precipice, at the literal threshold of going into the promised land decide once again that what would be best for them is to go back and ask if they can be slaves again. The parallels for our own lives are so stark in front of us right now. This may be what we are doing right now. We may have gone through the wilderness, we may have held onto God for dear life and allowed him to shift and shape whatever needed to be shaped in us and we have walked right through the threshold of what we believe we are being invited or swept or called into only to say, “this cannot be done, this cannot be done, there are giants in the land. I cannot do this.” What has happened here in our reading from today is that these little children who are coming up in the wilderness who were supposed to grow up free in the promised land were doomed. I mean we can say that an entire generation of slaves, former slaves, disqualified themselves from the promised land. And, so, they were sent back out into the wilderness to wander around for 40 years so that everyone could die off, but who does this really effect? A whole generation. The first generation intended to grow up free in the promised land didn’t. They grew up nomadic in the wilderness with all kinds of problems and all kinds of struggles as we will soon see as we continue to read the story. They were supposed grow up free and instead they had to go into the promised land and do what their parents would not. Again, we got some stark realities here to look at. So, these 10 spies, they spread a bad report and it spreads like wildfire and a herd mentality begins to form and they decide the best thing that they should do is stone Moses and Aaron who are falling to their faces on the ground before the Lord saying, “God don’t destroy these people, forgive them”.

And we turn the page and we go into the book of Mark and we see the same thing starting to form before our eyes. The religious leaders have decided that this Jesus cannot be the son of God and He is too disruptive. He’s going to upset the apple cart of power that they’ve got. And, so, they’ve got to kill Him. And what are they going to do? They’re going to stir up a herd mentality that is then going to kill the son of God. So, when we here language in the Psalms about sheep without a shepherd or we read in the Scriptures “all we like sheep have gone astray”, we see just how this happens and how little we know and how God can be standing right in front of our faces and we can still miss it. And how is it that that could have happened and can still and does still happen? What is it that is set against us that can make us lose the plot of the story at just about any moment? Deception. It can come in many flavors and stripes and forms and we can call it a lot of things but if we’re gonna boil things down to essential core elements here, the thing set against you and I to destroy us is deception. It was deception that ruined the whole thing for us to begin with in the garden of Eden.

So, in the book of Numbers the promise was available. Like, they were literally supposed to pack up when the spies got back and make a plan and go into the promised land and live in the promised land, the land of milk and honey. This bad report opened the door for a deception that spread like wildfire among the camp and created a herd mentality.

In the book of Mark, God incarnate, the Creator of all things is standing before these people who are standing in judgment of God. And what does God got to say in His own defense? Nothing, except “I am”. And when God identifies Himself they all tear their clothes and cry blasphemy and turn Him over to be killed. What is deception causing you to do that isn’t you at all and never was? What is deception telling you about who you are that was never true but you’ve lived as if it were true and so it doesn’t matter that it’s a lie? Deception can make people do things that they wouldn’t do and become things that they never were and behave in ways that, upon reflection wouldn’t make any sense and we’re seeing this play out in the Bible because this plays out in our lives.

Prayer:

And, so, Holy Spirit, we invite You to reveal to us the places of deception in our lives, not only the places that we’re deceiving others but the places that we have been deceived and are walking on a path that isn’t going anywhere. And if it is going anywhere it’s just circling us back into the wilderness when it was time to move forward into the promised land. Come, Holy Spirit and show us these areas of deception in our lives we ask in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hey family this is Melissa from Albertville Alabama. I need the community, the whole family to pray for South Alabama __ Alabama to be specific. I know you’ve seen how the tornadoes devastated those little towns in Lake County. So, we need you all to pray for these families, pray for the ones who lost loved ones and lift them because some of them lost everything and they don’t have any insurance. So, I’m sure our church will do __ but you all please, please, please keep Alabama in your prayers. And also, they found a little 11-year-old girl dead, somebody murdered her in the county that’s right next door to __ county where I live. And her name was Amberlynne. I can’t recall the last name. But please lift up __. It’s just so sad, it’s so much evil but I know God is still good. We love y’all. Y’all have a great day. Bye-bye.

Hi Daily Audio Bible friends, family this is Teresa from Indianapolis - was from Indianapolis now from Savannah Georgia. I am calling in today…first I’d like to greet everybody…just say hello. I love you guys. I’ve been listening for such a long time and I’m just very blessed to have this program in my life. I heard a call today from Angela from California and I was just prompted to call right away before the broadcast even ended. Angela, I just want to commend you for calling in. I thank God for you. I thank God for your life. I thank God that you picked up the phone. I thank God for your grandbaby that’s about to be born and she deserves to know you. You are more blessed than you know. Emotions are just…time…a time period. It might be a long time that you’ve felt sad or that you felt the way you felt, and I do understand that because I’ve been there. I’ve felt nothingness in my life, but God said in my Spirit, I just knew He was saying, “this is not to the death.” I didn’t have any desire to eat anything, to do anything, to…nothing. But I was just here. So, I’m encouraging you today to just stay here, to be encouraged. I’m lifting you up in the name of Jesus. Lord you touch Angela’s mind in Jesus’ name. Give her peace right now in the name of Jesus that passes all understanding, not peace of the world __ but peace only you can give God. Touch her, love on her Father God. Build her up in Jesus name. If you want to call me, you can reach out to me at beyondbarriers88@gmail.com. My name is Teresa at beyondbarriers88@gmail.com.

Hi this is Greg from central Illinois and I just want to call in and say how refreshing it was to hear the 18-year-old girl call in the other day. She is the future and she sounds very bright and it’s just refreshing to hear a young voice on here calling in and just reaching out the community for prayer. I just want to lift up all these nations that are going through turmoil right now. If you look around there’s just…you could basically take any country and there’s some type of crisis going on. I think of Venezuela and all the food and medical treatment that they need over there. I just lift them up and just pray that God will guide many to see Him and find Him and know that they all…they all need Him and to lean on Him. And I just pray that the leaders over there will except the relief that’s coming over. I think of Cameroon, who is in a civil war and there’s bloodshed every day and just pray for peace over there, that you will protect the people that just need peace and comfort and strength to move on each and every day. I think of the crisis going on in Conga with the rape. I just pray God that you will comfort those girls and women. Let them lean on you each and every day and know that you are there to protect them. And we’ve got it easy here in United States. I mean most of us would be considered rich compared to the rest of world. We’ve got so much to give to those other countries. I just pray that we’ll all look around us and see that they need help and just pray to God for comfort and peace and understanding for them. Thank you for what you’re doing Brian and thank you for the community for all the prayers. God bless you all.

Hello family, my name is Natalie. I’m from Houston and I’ve called in just a very few times before. And my heart in the last years as a listener has been on this family and the platform that I hold very dear my heart. I just want for prayers for my son Bill. I thank everyone who pray for him and continues to pray for him. He’s my prodigal son. Today is his birthday and he is 30 years old. I have three grandbabies. The short story is he’s eliminated our relationship for the past three years. The good news is our heavenly Father has given me strength and hope and has affluently placed a peace about it although I do have tears and long for that relationship be rekindled. And as I listen to all the prayers on the Daily Audio Bible and my family I know there are many of us out there who are struggling with prodigal sons and daughters and other hardships as well. So, I wanted to state that I do pray as I listen to your requested prayers and praises, there’s a lot of them as well. And I just thank you again for being with me in prayer for my son Bill and that God touches his heart and directs him back to Him and helps him realize the importance of family and forgiveness and that he has a change of heart and that it aligns with God. Thank you.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Monday March 11, 2019 (NIV)

Numbers 15:17-16:40

17 The Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 18 (A)“Speak to the people of Israel and say to them, When you come into the land to which I bring you 19 and when you eat of (B)the bread of the land, you shall present a contribution to the Lord. 20 (C)Of the first of your dough you shall present a loaf as a contribution; like a (D)contribution from the threshing floor, so shall you present it. 21 (E)Some of the first of your dough you shall give to the Lord as a contribution throughout your generations.

Laws About Unintentional Sins

22 (F)“But if you sin unintentionally,[a] and do not observe all these commandments that the Lord has spoken to Moses, 23 all that the Lord has commanded you by Moses, from the day that the Lord gave commandment, and onward throughout your generations, 24 then if it was done unintentionally (G)without the knowledge of the congregation, all the congregation shall offer one bull from the herd for a burnt offering, a pleasing aroma to the Lord, (H)with its grain offering and its drink offering, according to the rule, and (I)one male goat for a sin offering. 25 (J)And the priest shall make atonement for all the congregation of the people of Israel, and they shall be forgiven, because it was a mistake, and they have brought their offering, a food offering to the Lord, and their sin offering before the Lord for their mistake. 26 And all the congregation of the people of Israel shall be forgiven, and the stranger who sojourns among them, because the whole population was involved in the mistake.

27 (K)“If one person sins unintentionally, he shall offer a female goat a year old for a sin offering. 28 (L)And the priest shall make atonement before the Lord for the person who makes a mistake, when he sins unintentionally, to make atonement for him, and he shall be forgiven. 29 (M)You shall have one law for him who does anything unintentionally, for him who is native among the people of Israel and for the stranger who sojourns among them. 30 (N)But the person who does anything with a high hand, whether he is native or a sojourner, reviles the Lord, and that person shall be cut off from among his people. 31 Because he has (O)despised the word of the Lord and has broken his commandment, that person shall be utterly cut off; his iniquity shall be on him.”

A Sabbathbreaker Executed

32 While the people of Israel were in the wilderness, they found a man (P)gathering sticks on the Sabbath day. 33 And those who found him gathering sticks brought him to Moses and Aaron and to all the congregation. 34 (Q)They put him in custody, because it had not been made clear what should be done to him. 35 And the Lord said to Moses, (R)“The man shall be put to death; all the congregation shall (S)stone him with stones outside the camp.” 36 And all the congregation brought him outside the camp and stoned him to death with stones, as the Lord commanded Moses.

Tassels on Garments

37 The Lord said to Moses, 38 “Speak to the people of Israel, and tell them to (T)make tassels on the corners of their garments throughout their generations, and to put a cord of blue on the tassel of each corner. 39 And it shall be a tassel for you to look at and remember all the commandments of the Lord, to do them, (U)not to follow[b] after your own heart and your own eyes, which you are inclined (V)to whore after. 40 So you shall remember and do all my commandments, and be (W)holy to your God. 41 (X)I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt to be your God: I am the Lord your God.”

Korah's Rebellion

16 Now (Y)Korah the son of Izhar, son of Kohath, son of Levi, and (Z)Dathan and Abiram the sons of Eliab, and On the son of Peleth, sons of Reuben, took men. And they rose up before Moses, with a number of the people of Israel, 250 chiefs of the congregation, chosen from the assembly, well-known men. (AA)They assembled themselves together against Moses and against Aaron and said to them, (AB)“You have gone too far! For (AC)all in the congregation are holy, every one of them, and the Lord is among them. Why then do you exalt yourselves above the assembly of the Lord?” When Moses heard it, (AD)he fell on his face, and he said to Korah and all his company, “In the morning the Lord will show (AE)who is his,[c] and who is (AF)holy, and will bring him near to him. The one (AG)whom he chooses he will (AH)bring near to him. Do this: take (AI)censers, Korah and all his company; put fire in them and put incense on them before the Lord tomorrow, and the man whom the Lord chooses shall be the holy one. (AJ)You have gone too far, sons of Levi!” And Moses said to Korah, “Hear now, you sons of Levi: is it (AK)too small a thing for you that the God of Israel has (AL)separated you from the congregation of Israel, to bring you near to himself, to do service in the tabernacle of the Lord and to stand before the congregation to minister to them, 10 and that he has brought you near him, and all your brothers the sons of Levi with you? And would you seek the priesthood also? 11 Therefore it is against the Lord that you and all your company have gathered together. What is (AM)Aaron that you grumble against him?”

12 And Moses sent to call Dathan and Abiram the sons of Eliab, and they said, “We will not come up. 13 Is it (AN)a small thing that you have brought us up out of (AO)a land flowing with milk and honey, to kill us in the wilderness, that you must also (AP)make yourself a prince over us? 14 Moreover, you have not brought us into a land flowing with milk and honey, nor given us inheritance of fields and vineyards. Will you put out the eyes of these men? We will not come up.” 15 And Moses was very angry and said to the Lord, (AQ)“Do not respect their offering. (AR)I have not taken one donkey from them, and I have not harmed one of them.”

16 And Moses said to Korah, “Be present, you and all your company, (AS)before the Lord, you and they, and Aaron, tomorrow. 17 And (AT)let every one of you take his censer and put incense on it, and every one of you bring before the Lord his censer, (AU)250 censers; you also, and Aaron, each his censer.” 18 So every man took his censer and put fire in them and laid incense on them and stood at the entrance of the tent of meeting with Moses and Aaron. 19 Then Korah assembled all the congregation against them at the entrance of the tent of meeting. (AV)And the glory of the Lord appeared to all the congregation.

20 And the Lord spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying, 21 (AW)“Separate yourselves from among this congregation, that I may consume them (AX)in a moment.” 22 And they (AY)fell on their faces and said, “O God, (AZ)the God of the spirits of all flesh, (BA)shall one man sin, and will you be angry with all the congregation?” 23 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 24 “Say to the congregation, Get away from the dwelling of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram.”

25 Then Moses rose and went to Dathan and Abiram, and the elders of Israel followed him. 26 And he spoke to the congregation, saying, (BB)“Depart, please, from the tents of these wicked men, and touch nothing of theirs, lest you be swept away with all their sins.” 27 So they got away from the dwelling of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram. And Dathan and Abiram came out and stood (BC)at the door of their tents, together with their wives, their sons, and their little ones. 28 And Moses said, “Hereby you shall know that the Lord has sent me to do all these works, and that it has not been (BD)of my own accord. 29 If these men die as all men die, or if they are visited by the fate of all mankind, (BE)then the Lord has not sent me. 30 But if the Lord creates something new, and (BF)the ground opens its mouth and swallows them up with all that belongs to them, and they (BG)go down alive into Sheol, then you shall know that these men have despised the Lord.”

31 (BH)And as soon as he had finished speaking all these words, the ground under them split apart. 32 And the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them up, with their households and (BI)all the people who belonged to Korah and all their goods. 33 So they and all that belonged to them went down alive into Sheol, and the earth closed over them, and (BJ)they perished from the midst of the assembly. 34 And all Israel who were around them fled at their cry, for they said, “Lest the earth swallow us up!” 35 And (BK)fire came out from the Lord and consumed (BL)the 250 men offering the incense.

36 [d] Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 37 “Tell Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest to take up the censers out of the blaze. Then scatter the fire far and wide, for they have become holy. 38 As for the censers of (BM)these men who have sinned at the cost of their lives, let them be made into hammered plates as a covering for the altar, for they offered them before the Lord, and they became holy. (BN)Thus they shall be a sign to the people of Israel.” 39 So Eleazar the priest took the bronze censers, which those who were burned had offered, and they were hammered out as a covering for the altar, 40 to be a reminder to the people of Israel, so (BO)that no outsider, who is not of the descendants of Aaron, should draw near to burn incense before the Lord, lest he become like Korah and his company—as the Lord said to him through Moses.

Mark 15

Jesus Delivered to Pilate

15 (A)And as soon as it was morning, the chief priests (B)held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council. And (C)they bound Jesus and (D)led him away and (E)delivered him over to (F)Pilate. (G)And Pilate asked him, (H)“Are you the King of the Jews?” And he answered him, (I)“You have said so.” And the chief priests accused him of many things. And Pilate again asked him, (J)“Have you no answer to make? See how many charges they bring against you.” But Jesus (K)made no further answer, so that Pilate was amazed.

Pilate Delivers Jesus to Be Crucified

(L)Now at the feast he used to release for them one prisoner for whom they asked. And among the rebels in prison, who had (M)committed murder (N)in the insurrection, there was a man called Barabbas. And the crowd came up and began to ask Pilate to do as he usually did for them. And he answered them, saying, “Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?” 10 For he perceived that (O)it was out of envy that the chief priests had delivered him up. 11 But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have him release for them Barabbas instead. 12 And Pilate again said to them, “Then what shall I do with (P)the man you call the King of the Jews?” 13 And they cried out again, “Crucify him.” 14 And Pilate said to them, “Why? (Q)What evil has he done?” But they shouted all the more, “Crucify him.” 15 So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released for them Barabbas, and having (R)scourged[a] Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.

Jesus Is Mocked

16 (S)And the soldiers led him away inside (T)the palace (that is, (U)the governor's headquarters),[b] and they called together the whole (V)battalion.[c] 17 And they clothed him in (W)a purple cloak, and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on him. 18 And they began to salute him, (X)“Hail, King of the Jews!” 19 And they were striking his head with a reed and (Y)spitting on him and (Z)kneeling down in homage to him. 20 And when they had (AA)mocked him, they stripped him of (AB)the purple cloak and put his own clothes on him. And they (AC)led him out to crucify him.

The Crucifixion

21 (AD)And they compelled a passerby, Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to carry his cross. 22 (AE)And they brought him to the place called Golgotha (which means Place of a Skull). 23 And they offered him wine mixed with (AF)myrrh, but he did not take it. 24 And they crucified him and (AG)divided his garments among them, casting lots for them, to decide what each should take. 25 And (AH)it was the third hour[d] when they crucified him. 26 And the inscription of the charge against him read, (AI)“The King of the Jews.” 27 And with him they crucified two (AJ)robbers, (AK)one on his right and one on his left.[e] 29 And (AL)those who passed by derided him, (AM)wagging their heads and saying, (AN)“Aha! (AO)You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, 30 save yourself, and come down from the cross!” 31 So also the chief priests with the scribes mocked him to one another, saying, (AP)“He saved others; (AQ)he cannot save himself. 32 Let (AR)the Christ, (AS)the King of Israel, come down now from the cross that we may (AT)see and believe.” (AU)Those who were crucified with him also reviled him.

The Death of Jesus

33 And when the sixth hour[f] had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour.[g] 34 And at the ninth hour Jesus (AV)cried with a loud voice, (AW)“Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” 35 And some of the bystanders hearing it said, “Behold, he is calling Elijah.” 36 And someone ran and filled a sponge with (AX)sour wine, put it on a reed (AY)and gave it to him to drink, saying, “Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to take him down.” 37 And Jesus (AZ)uttered a loud cry and (BA)breathed his last. 38 And (BB)the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. 39 (BC)And when the centurion, who stood facing him, saw that in this way he[h] breathed his last, he said, (BD)“Truly this man was the Son[i] of God!”

40 There were also (BE)women looking on (BF)from a distance, among whom were (BG)Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and (BH)Salome. 41 When he was in Galilee, they followed him and (BI)ministered to him, and there were also many other women who (BJ)came up with him to Jerusalem.

Jesus Is Buried

42 (BK)And when evening had come, since it was (BL)the day of Preparation, that is, the day before the Sabbath, 43 Joseph of Arimathea, (BM)a respected member of the council, who (BN)was also himself looking for the kingdom of God, took courage and went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. 44 Pilate was surprised to hear that he should have already died.[j] And summoning (BO)the centurion, he asked him whether he was already dead. 45 And when he learned from (BP)the centurion that he was dead, he granted the corpse to Joseph. 46 And Joseph[k] bought (BQ)a linen shroud, and taking him down, wrapped him in the linen shroud and (BR)laid him in a tomb (BS)that had been cut out of the rock. And he rolled (BT)a stone against the entrance of the tomb. 47 (BU)Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses saw where he was laid.

Psalm 54

The Lord Upholds My Life

To the choirmaster: with (A)stringed instruments. A Maskil[a] of David, (B)when the Ziphites went and told Saul, “Is not David hiding among us?”

54 O God, save me by your (C)name,
and vindicate me by your might.
O God, (D)hear my prayer;
give ear to the words of my mouth.

(E)For (F)strangers[b] have risen against me;
ruthless men (G)seek my life;
they do not set God before themselves. Selah

Behold, (H)God is my helper;
the Lord is the upholder of my life.
He will return the evil to my enemies;
in your (I)faithfulness (J)put an end to them.

With a freewill offering I will sacrifice to you;
I will give thanks to your name, O Lord, (K)for it is good.
For he has delivered me from every trouble,
and my eye has (L)looked in triumph on my enemies.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Sunday March 10, 2019 (NIV)

Numbers 14:1-15:16

The People Rebel

14 Then all the congregation raised a loud cry, and the people (A)wept that night. And all the people of Israel (B)grumbled against Moses and Aaron. The whole congregation said to them, “Would that we had died in the land of Egypt! Or (C)would that we had died in this wilderness! Why is the Lord bringing us into this land, to fall by the sword? (D)Our wives and our little ones will become a prey. Would it not be better for us to go back to Egypt?” And they said to one another, (E)“Let us choose a leader and (F)go back to Egypt.”

Then (G)Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the people of Israel. (H)And Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, who were among those who had spied out the land, tore their clothes and said to all the congregation of the people of Israel, (I)“The land, which we passed through to spy it out, is an exceedingly good land. If (J)the Lord delights in us, he will bring us into this land and give it to us, (K)a land that flows with milk and honey. Only (L)do not rebel against the Lord. And (M)do not fear the people of the land, for (N)they are bread for us. Their protection is removed from them, and the Lord is with us; do not fear them.” 10 (O)Then all the congregation said to stone them with stones. But (P)the glory of the Lord appeared at the tent of meeting to all the people of Israel.

11 And the Lord said to Moses, “How long will this people (Q)despise me? And how long will they not (R)believe in me, in spite of all the signs that I have done among them? 12 I will strike them with the pestilence and disinherit them, and I (S)will make of you a nation greater and mightier than they.”

Moses Intercedes for the People

13 But (T)Moses said to the Lord, “Then the Egyptians will hear of it, for you brought up this people in your might from among them, 14 and they will tell the inhabitants of this land. (U)They have heard that you, O Lord, are in the midst of this people. For you, O Lord, are seen face to face, and (V)your cloud stands over them and you go before them, in a pillar of cloud by day and in a pillar of fire by night. 15 Now if you kill this people as one man, then the nations who have heard your fame will say, 16 ‘It is because the Lord (W)was not able to bring this people into the land that he swore to give to them that he has killed them in the wilderness.’ 17 And now, please let the power of the Lord be great as you have promised, saying, 18 (X)‘The Lord is slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, forgiving iniquity and transgression, but he will by no means clear the guilty, (Y)visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, to the third and the fourth generation.’ 19 Please (Z)pardon the iniquity of this people, according to the greatness of your steadfast love, just (AA)as you have forgiven this people, from Egypt until now.”

God Promises Judgment

20 Then the Lord said, “I have pardoned, (AB)according to your word. 21 But truly, as I live, and as all (AC)the earth shall be filled with the glory of the Lord, 22 (AD)none of the men who have seen my glory and my signs that I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, and yet have put me to the test these (AE)ten times and have not obeyed my voice, 23 (AF)shall see the land that I swore to give to their fathers. And none of those who despised me shall see it. 24 But my servant (AG)Caleb, because he has a different spirit and has (AH)followed me fully, I will bring into the land into which he went, and his descendants shall possess it. 25 (AI)Now, since the Amalekites and the Canaanites dwell in the valleys, (AJ)turn tomorrow and set out for the wilderness by the way to the Red Sea.”

26 And the Lord spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying, 27 “How long shall (AK)this wicked congregation grumble against me? (AL)I have heard the grumblings of the people of Israel, which they grumble against me. 28 Say to them, (AM)‘As I live, declares the Lord, (AN)what you have said in my hearing I will do to you: 29 (AO)your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness, and (AP)of all your number, listed in the census (AQ)from twenty years old and upward, who have grumbled against me, 30 not one shall come into the land where I (AR)swore that I would make you dwell, (AS)except Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun. 31 (AT)But your little ones, who you said would become a prey, I will bring in, and they shall know the land that (AU)you have rejected. 32 But as for you, (AV)your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness. 33 And your children (AW)shall be shepherds in the wilderness (AX)forty years and shall (AY)suffer for your faithlessness, until the last of your dead bodies lies in the wilderness. 34 (AZ)According to the number of the days in which you spied out the land, (BA)forty days, a year for each day, you shall bear your iniquity forty years, and you shall know my displeasure.’ 35 (BB)I, the Lord, have spoken. Surely this will I do to all (BC)this wicked congregation who are gathered together against me: in this wilderness they shall come to a full end, and there they shall die.”

36 (BD)And the men whom Moses sent to spy out the land, who returned and made all the congregation grumble against him by bringing up a bad report about the land— 37 the men who brought up a bad report of the land—(BE)died by plague before the Lord. 38 Of those men who went to spy out the land, (BF)only Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh remained alive.

Israel Defeated in Battle

39 When Moses told these words to all the people of Israel, the people (BG)mourned greatly. 40 And they rose early in the morning and went up to the heights of the hill country, saying, (BH)“Here we are. We will go up to the place that the Lord has promised, for we have sinned.” 41 (BI)But Moses said, “Why now are you transgressing the command of the Lord, when that will not succeed? 42 (BJ)Do not go up, (BK)for the Lord is not among you, lest you be struck down before your enemies. 43 For there (BL)the Amalekites and the Canaanites are facing you, and you shall fall by the sword. Because you have turned back from following the Lord, the Lord will not be with you.” 44 (BM)But they presumed to go up to the heights of the hill country, although neither (BN)the ark of the covenant of the Lord nor Moses departed out of the camp. 45 Then (BO)the Amalekites and the Canaanites who lived in that hill country came down and defeated them and pursued them, even to (BP)Hormah.

Laws About Sacrifices

15 The Lord spoke to Moses, saying, “Speak to the people of Israel and say to them, (BQ)When you come into the land you are to inhabit, which I am giving you, and (BR)you offer to the Lord from the herd or from the flock a food offering[a] or a burnt offering or a sacrifice, (BS)to fulfill a vow or as a freewill offering or (BT)at your appointed feasts, to make a (BU)pleasing aroma to the Lord, then (BV)he who brings his offering shall offer to the Lord (BW)a grain offering of a tenth of an ephah[b] of fine flour, (BX)mixed with a quarter of a hin[c] of oil; and you shall offer with the burnt offering, or for the sacrifice, a quarter of a hin of (BY)wine for the drink offering for each lamb. (BZ)Or for a ram, you shall offer for a grain offering two tenths of an ephah of fine flour mixed with a third of a hin of oil. And for the drink offering you shall offer a third of a hin of wine, a (CA)pleasing aroma to the Lord. And when you offer a bull as a burnt offering or sacrifice, to (CB)fulfill a vow or for (CC)peace offerings to the Lord, then one shall offer (CD)with the bull a grain offering of three tenths of an ephah of fine flour, mixed with half a hin of oil. 10 And you shall offer for the drink offering half a hin of wine, as a food offering, a pleasing aroma to the Lord.

11 (CE)“Thus it shall be done for each bull or ram, or for each lamb or young goat. 12 As many as you offer, so shall you do with each one, as many as there are. 13 Every native Israelite shall do these things in this way, in offering a food offering, with a pleasing aroma to the Lord. 14 And if a stranger is sojourning with you, or anyone is living permanently among you, and he wishes to offer a food offering, with a pleasing aroma to the Lord, he shall do as you do. 15 For the assembly, (CF)there shall be one statute for you and for the stranger who sojourns with you, a statute forever throughout your generations. You and the sojourner shall be alike before the Lord. 16 One law and one rule shall be for you and for the stranger who sojourns with you.”

Mark 14:53-72

Jesus Before the Council

53 (A)And (B)they led Jesus to the high priest. And all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes came together. 54 (C)And (D)Peter had followed him at a distance, (E)right into (F)the courtyard of the high priest. And he was sitting with (G)the guards and (H)warming himself at the fire. 55 Now the chief priests and the whole council[a] were seeking testimony against Jesus to put him to death, but they found none. 56 (I)For many bore false witness against him, but their testimony (J)did not agree. 57 And some stood up and bore false witness against him, saying, 58 (K)“We heard him say, (L)‘I will destroy this temple (M)that is made with hands, and in three days I will build another, (N)not made with hands.’” 59 Yet even about this their testimony did not agree. 60 And the high priest stood up in the midst and asked Jesus, “Have you no answer to make? What is it that these men testify against you?”[b] 61 But (O)he remained silent and made no answer. (P)Again the high priest asked him, “Are you (Q)the Christ, the Son of (R)the Blessed?” 62 And Jesus said, “I am, and (S)you will see the Son of Man (T)seated at the right hand of Power, and (U)coming with the clouds of heaven.” 63 And the high priest (V)tore his garments and said, “What further witnesses do we need? 64 You have heard (W)his blasphemy. What is your decision?” And they (X)all condemned him as (Y)deserving death. 65 (Z)And some began (AA)to spit on him and (AB)to cover his face and to strike him, saying to him, “Prophesy!” And the guards received him (AC)with blows.

Peter Denies Jesus

66 (AD)And as Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the servant girls of the high priest came, 67 and seeing Peter (AE)warming himself, she looked at him and said, “You also were with the Nazarene, Jesus.” 68 But he denied it, saying, “I neither know nor understand what you mean.” And he went out into the gateway[c] and (AF)the rooster crowed.[d] 69 And the servant girl saw him and began again to say to the bystanders, “This man is one of them.” 70 But again he denied it. And after a little while the bystanders again said to Peter, “Certainly you are one of them, for you are a Galilean.” 71 But he began to invoke a curse on himself and to swear, “I do not know this man of whom you speak.” 72 And immediately the rooster crowed (AG)a second time. And Peter remembered how Jesus had said to him, (AH)“Before the rooster crows twice, you will (AI)deny me three times.” And he broke down and wept.[e]

Psalm 53

There Is None Who Does Good

To the choirmaster: according to (A)Mahalath. A Maskil[a] of David.

53 (B)The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.”
They are corrupt, doing abominable iniquity;
there is none who does good.

God looks down from heaven
on the children of man
to see if there are any who understand,[b]
who seek after God.

They have all fallen away;
together they have become corrupt;
there is none who does good,
not even one.

Have those who work evil no knowledge,
who eat up my people as they eat bread,
and do not call upon God?

There they are, in great terror,
(C)where there is no terror!
For God (D)scatters the bones of him who encamps against you;
you put them to shame, for God has rejected them.

Oh, that salvation for Israel would come out of Zion!
When God restores the fortunes of his people,
let Jacob rejoice, let Israel be glad.

Today is the 9th day of March. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian. It is great to be here with you. Every day getting a little bit better, pretty much feeling back now from the excursion, the pilgrimage that we took to the land of the Bible and as we close this week out it’s good to be feeling as if everything is back and feeling mostly normal again. So, thank you for all if the prayers. So, we’re at the end of the week and we’ve been reading from the New Living Translation this week, which is what we’ll do today. And obviously we’ll be picking up where we left off yesterday, which takes us back out into the book of numbers. Today chapter 11 verse 24 to 13 verse 33.

Commentary:

Okay. So, we are in the season of Lent and that began a couple of days ago and we talked about it a bit then. And whether or not you observe Lent is totally up to you but it’s a long-running Christian tradition that goes back to the early church and, you know, when we talked about it, we talked about how you see people giving up candy bars or whatever, but that’s really not the point. The point is to spend 40 days contemplating what it cost to eradicate sin from your life, right, because sin leads somewhere. Like, this is what we’re seeing in the Old Testament with the sacrificial system. Sin costs something and Lent let’s know that it cost the life of our Savior. And, so, we say to God, whatever’s in my life that doesn’t need to be there in this season, I surrender it to you completely. I give you permission to reorder anything in my life. I sit with what it cost to bring me my salvation. And as we read from the Gospels today we’re moving into that story. And, so, it’s a poignant reading for this particular season as we go through the passion narrative again in the gospel of Mark to focus our attention on exactly where sin leads and what sin cost.

Prayer:

Jesus as we read this story from the gospel of Mark in this season we sit humbly understanding even from today’s reading that this wasn’t just something that you came to do in your spare time. This was an anguishing thing for you. You cried out to the Father for this to pass and yet you surrendered your will. This was not an easy thing to go to the cross. To eradicate sin from our story cost something dear and so often we take that for granted, but in this season and, as we’re moving through this story, we invite your Holy Spirit to bring it near, to bring it close for us to be able to understand the magnitude of your sacrifice. Come Holy Spirit we pray. In Jesus’ name we ask. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Good morning Daily Audio Bible family this is Lee from New Jersey. Today is March 6th and today is the first day of…Ash Wednesday. So, blessings to you all and may we bless each other and let us contemplate how we’re gonna enter this season. So, let’s do this. First off, before today is day 24, just saying that to remind myself what day it is…praying against gluttony. Angela from California, you called about depression and you need prayer for that and we’re on sister. Let the Holy Spirit guide you, pray through this, let the Holy Spirit guide you to help the less fortunate. Okay. And what you see by helping the less fortunate and you will interact with the less fortunate that how happy some of the less fortunate may be with so little and with so many problems that they have but yet they still rely on the Lord and the Holy Spirit to guide them through any situation that they’re in. So, that’s just the Holy Spirit speaking through me to you. And my brother Mark Street, thank you very much for that shout out. You are my brother from down under. So, we will be talking soon hopefully and hopefully I’ll get your email right. God bless you. Today’s day 24 praying against gluttony. So, here we go. Father God as we enter today Lord, today is the day of fasting Lord. May we keep You in our hearts and in our minds Lord. May we listen to the Holy Spirit and not to our hunger Lord, that if we have hunger, that hunger may be for You Lord, for Your spirit, for Your love, for Your passion, for Your word Lord. May the Holy Spirit live within us Lord. May there only be space for the Holy Spirit to be within us Lord, to guide us Lord, to satisfy our hunger Lord, to keep our minds sharp and to keep us focused on You as we enter into this season of Lent. May we leave the things that we don’t need Lord and get to see the things that You have put forward for us, that You have put in front of us…

Hello to my newfound family. My name is Natalie. This is my first year coming through the Bible with you and I am so grateful for you. On my heart today is a woman who called. As soon as I heard the word suicide my heart broke. I’m coming through a depression myself and I don’t know her name but she’s due to have a grandchild soon. She doesn’t even have joy about a grandchild coming and she’s reaching out for God. I just want to tell her…I want to remind her of this mission for this Daily Audio Bible and it is to bring the spoken word of God to anyone who will listen anytime anywhere and to do it in community so that no one has to ever feel alone again. She is not alone, you are not alone. And as another Daily Audio Bible listener said to Psalm…referring to Psalm 91, which is so beautiful because we can all go there in our Bible. I’m reading this for you, the woman who is so depressed. “The Lord says I will rescue those who love me. I will protect those who trust in my name. When they call in me I will answer. I will be with them in trouble. I will rescue and honor them. I will reward them with a long life and give them my salvation.” I love you. I love you, woman who is going through such a difficult time right now. I can be reached at godsgoodgraces.trust@eachgmail.com. I need to reach out to you, you are loved by so many. Do not lose heart. My grandchildren live far from me. It is closer for me to get to Florida from Canada then it is to go see them in Canada. So, please don’t lose heart. You are loved. Reach out. You are doing the right thing by staying involved in this community.

Hey DAB family this is Tim in Tampa. I just want to thank all of you so much for all the prayers this last week. It has just been so touching and so moving to me. Cherry Chase, Pastor Gene, of course I remember meeting you there. You know, they say that we don’t remember days we remember moments. And meeting you and your family is going to be always one of those moments, just very special. Pelham, your analysis was dead nuts on. We are in a boxing match. It is a fight. And it’s a constant fight against the enemy and if you’re gonna live this life you signed up to be in the war and I believe I was just in a space where I needed somebody else to reach down and help me put the armor on. And I just want to thank every single one of you. I only have two minutes, so I’d need about five to thank everybody. So, apologies for not being able to mention everyone but you’re so moving to me. And I asked my wife last night, “so, you seeing anything in the last week, any changes?” She said, “are you kidding me? I got you back again.” So, I just really appreciate it. Realize that we’re in this battle. And thank you for helping me to put the armor on when I couldn’t and lifting my arms up when I couldn’t. And I just really appreciate that so much. Such a powerful, powerful thing that we have here of just thousands of people from all around the globe able to lift each other up and I just look forward to the day when we can all meet in heaven. Isn’t it gonna be great? Where all gonna be able to meet people that prayed for us that we never met before and we’ll have friends that we didn’t even realize that we had and relationships that will be wonderful and we’ll be able to see the things that were able to affect that we just don’t even see right now. But I do want you guys to know what an affect that you had on me this last week. Don’t stop praying. The war continues, but I want to pray for somebody. Pelham, you’re right man, let’s just jump into the ring with Pelham right now…

Father, I just want to lift up my Daily Audio Bible family right now. I just thank you that you are a holy, you are completely set apart. I thank you that there’s nobody else like you. I thank you that you never change, you remain the same in an ever-changing world, in ever-changing circumstances you remain the same and you are our most stable, most trustworthy, most faithful source that we can trust. I thank you that we can renounce the lies that we can’t trust anybody. That’s a lie because we can absolutely trust you and we can trust your heart in other people. Father, I ask that you would break off the fear of man, that we would stop being afraid of one another to open up to one another so that we can confess our sins one to another and be prayed for and be healed. And father, I also thank you that your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven in all of my brothers and sisters listening to this right now and for every person that truly does not know you and has never been born again but they are on that edge, they’re on that battle, that there being warred for the very soul and mind. And I just say, come into the kingdom of heaven. Be set free and be made whole. Yeshua is here and He is all you need, He is all you’ll ever need. He is truly life. And, so, father I just release your kingdom on your people that they would run and not grow weary, that they would rise up and persevere, that they would not fade, that they would finish this race you’ve given them. I ask that you would give them supernatural wisdom, that you would give them humility to learn new skill sets, to take care of their minds, their bodies, their souls. And father, I just ask that you give them wisdom for relationship skills, financial skills, whatever they need, that they would go after it and that they would learn and grow and to labor with you…

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Saturday March 9, 2019 (NIV)

Numbers 11:24-13:33

24 So Moses went out and reported the Lord’s words to the people. He gathered the seventy elders and stationed them around the Tabernacle.[a] 25 And the Lord came down in the cloud and spoke to Moses. Then he gave the seventy elders the same Spirit that was upon Moses. And when the Spirit rested upon them, they prophesied. But this never happened again.

26 Two men, Eldad and Medad, had stayed behind in the camp. They were listed among the elders, but they had not gone out to the Tabernacle. Yet the Spirit rested upon them as well, so they prophesied there in the camp. 27 A young man ran and reported to Moses, “Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp!”

28 Joshua son of Nun, who had been Moses’ assistant since his youth, protested, “Moses, my master, make them stop!”

29 But Moses replied, “Are you jealous for my sake? I wish that all the Lord’s people were prophets and that the Lord would put his Spirit upon them all!” 30 Then Moses returned to the camp with the elders of Israel.

The Lord Sends Quail

31 Now the Lord sent a wind that brought quail from the sea and let them fall all around the camp. For miles in every direction there were quail flying about three feet above the ground.[b] 32 So the people went out and caught quail all that day and throughout the night and all the next day, too. No one gathered less than fifty bushels[c]! They spread the quail all around the camp to dry. 33 But while they were gorging themselves on the meat—while it was still in their mouths—the anger of the Lord blazed against the people, and he struck them with a severe plague. 34 So that place was called Kibroth-hattaavah (which means “graves of gluttony”) because there they buried the people who had craved meat from Egypt. 35 From Kibroth-hattaavah the Israelites traveled to Hazeroth, where they stayed for some time.

The Complaints of Miriam and Aaron

12 While they were at Hazeroth, Miriam and Aaron criticized Moses because he had married a Cushite woman. They said, “Has the Lord spoken only through Moses? Hasn’t he spoken through us, too?” But the Lord heard them. (Now Moses was very humble—more humble than any other person on earth.)

So immediately the Lord called to Moses, Aaron, and Miriam and said, “Go out to the Tabernacle,[d] all three of you!” So the three of them went to the Tabernacle. Then the Lord descended in the pillar of cloud and stood at the entrance of the Tabernacle.[e] “Aaron and Miriam!” he called, and they stepped forward. And the Lord said to them, “Now listen to what I say:

“If there were prophets among you,
I, the Lord, would reveal myself in visions.
I would speak to them in dreams.
But not with my servant Moses.
Of all my house, he is the one I trust.
I speak to him face to face,
clearly, and not in riddles!
He sees the Lord as he is.
So why were you not afraid
to criticize my servant Moses?”

The Lord was very angry with them, and he departed. 10 As the cloud moved from above the Tabernacle, there stood Miriam, her skin as white as snow from leprosy.[f] When Aaron saw what had happened to her, 11 he cried out to Moses, “Oh, my master! Please don’t punish us for this sin we have so foolishly committed. 12 Don’t let her be like a stillborn baby, already decayed at birth.”

13 So Moses cried out to the Lord, “O God, I beg you, please heal her!”

14 But the Lord said to Moses, “If her father had done nothing more than spit in her face, wouldn’t she be defiled for seven days? So keep her outside the camp for seven days, and after that she may be accepted back.”

15 So Miriam was kept outside the camp for seven days, and the people waited until she was brought back before they traveled again. 16 Then they left Hazeroth and camped in the wilderness of Paran.

Twelve Scouts Explore Canaan

13 The Lord now said to Moses, “Send out men to explore the land of Canaan, the land I am giving to the Israelites. Send one leader from each of the twelve ancestral tribes.” So Moses did as the Lord commanded him. He sent out twelve men, all tribal leaders of Israel, from their camp in the wilderness of Paran. These were the tribes and the names of their leaders:

TribeLeader
ReubenShammua son of Zaccur
SimeonShaphat son of Hori
JudahCaleb son of Jephunneh
IssacharIgal son of Joseph
EphraimHoshea son of Nun
BenjaminPalti son of Raphu
10 ZebulunGaddiel son of Sodi
11 Manasseh son of JosephGaddi son of Susi
12 DanAmmiel son of Gemalli
13 AsherSethur son of Michael
14 NaphtaliNahbi son of Vophsi
15 GadGeuel son of Maki

16 These are the names of the men Moses sent out to explore the land. (Moses called Hoshea son of Nun by the name Joshua.)

17 Moses gave the men these instructions as he sent them out to explore the land: “Go north through the Negev into the hill country. 18 See what the land is like, and find out whether the people living there are strong or weak, few or many. 19 See what kind of land they live in. Is it good or bad? Do their towns have walls, or are they unprotected like open camps? 20 Is the soil fertile or poor? Are there many trees? Do your best to bring back samples of the crops you see.” (It happened to be the season for harvesting the first ripe grapes.)

21 So they went up and explored the land from the wilderness of Zin as far as Rehob, near Lebo-hamath. 22 Going north, they passed through the Negev and arrived at Hebron, where Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai—all descendants of Anak—lived. (The ancient town of Hebron was founded seven years before the Egyptian city of Zoan.) 23 When they came to the valley of Eshcol, they cut down a branch with a single cluster of grapes so large that it took two of them to carry it on a pole between them! They also brought back samples of the pomegranates and figs. 24 That place was called the valley of Eshcol (which means “cluster”), because of the cluster of grapes the Israelite men cut there.

The Scouting Report

25 After exploring the land for forty days, the men returned 26 to Moses, Aaron, and the whole community of Israel at Kadesh in the wilderness of Paran. They reported to the whole community what they had seen and showed them the fruit they had taken from the land. 27 This was their report to Moses: “We entered the land you sent us to explore, and it is indeed a bountiful country—a land flowing with milk and honey. Here is the kind of fruit it produces. 28 But the people living there are powerful, and their towns are large and fortified. We even saw giants there, the descendants of Anak! 29 The Amalekites live in the Negev, and the Hittites, Jebusites, and Amorites live in the hill country. The Canaanites live along the coast of the Mediterranean Sea[g] and along the Jordan Valley.”

30 But Caleb tried to quiet the people as they stood before Moses. “Let’s go at once to take the land,” he said. “We can certainly conquer it!”

31 But the other men who had explored the land with him disagreed. “We can’t go up against them! They are stronger than we are!” 32 So they spread this bad report about the land among the Israelites: “The land we traveled through and explored will devour anyone who goes to live there. All the people we saw were huge. 33 We even saw giants[h] there, the descendants of Anak. Next to them we felt like grasshoppers, and that’s what they thought, too!”

Mark 14:22-52

22 As they were eating, Jesus took some bread and blessed it. Then he broke it in pieces and gave it to the disciples, saying, “Take it, for this is my body.”

23 And he took a cup of wine and gave thanks to God for it. He gave it to them, and they all drank from it. 24 And he said to them, “This is my blood, which confirms the covenant[a] between God and his people. It is poured out as a sacrifice for many. 25 I tell you the truth, I will not drink wine again until the day I drink it new in the Kingdom of God.”

26 Then they sang a hymn and went out to the Mount of Olives.

Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial

27 On the way, Jesus told them, “All of you will desert me. For the Scriptures say,

‘God will strike[b] the Shepherd,
and the sheep will be scattered.’

28 But after I am raised from the dead, I will go ahead of you to Galilee and meet you there.”

29 Peter said to him, “Even if everyone else deserts you, I never will.”

30 Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, Peter—this very night, before the rooster crows twice, you will deny three times that you even know me.”

31 “No!” Peter declared emphatically. “Even if I have to die with you, I will never deny you!” And all the others vowed the same.

Jesus Prays in Gethsemane

32 They went to the olive grove called Gethsemane, and Jesus said, “Sit here while I go and pray.” 33 He took Peter, James, and John with him, and he became deeply troubled and distressed. 34 He told them, “My soul is crushed with grief to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.”

35 He went on a little farther and fell to the ground. He prayed that, if it were possible, the awful hour awaiting him might pass him by. 36 “Abba, Father,”[c] he cried out, “everything is possible for you. Please take this cup of suffering away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.”

37 Then he returned and found the disciples asleep. He said to Peter, “Simon, are you asleep? Couldn’t you watch with me even one hour? 38 Keep watch and pray, so that you will not give in to temptation. For the spirit is willing, but the body is weak.”

39 Then Jesus left them again and prayed the same prayer as before. 40 When he returned to them again, he found them sleeping, for they couldn’t keep their eyes open. And they didn’t know what to say.

41 When he returned to them the third time, he said, “Go ahead and sleep. Have your rest. But no—the time has come. The Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 42 Up, let’s be going. Look, my betrayer is here!”

Jesus Is Betrayed and Arrested

43 And immediately, even as Jesus said this, Judas, one of the twelve disciples, arrived with a crowd of men armed with swords and clubs. They had been sent by the leading priests, the teachers of religious law, and the elders. 44 The traitor, Judas, had given them a prearranged signal: “You will know which one to arrest when I greet him with a kiss. Then you can take him away under guard.” 45 As soon as they arrived, Judas walked up to Jesus. “Rabbi!” he exclaimed, and gave him the kiss.

46 Then the others grabbed Jesus and arrested him. 47 But one of the men with Jesus pulled out his sword and struck the high priest’s slave, slashing off his ear.

48 Jesus asked them, “Am I some dangerous revolutionary, that you come with swords and clubs to arrest me? 49 Why didn’t you arrest me in the Temple? I was there among you teaching every day. But these things are happening to fulfill what the Scriptures say about me.”

50 Then all his disciples deserted him and ran away. 51 One young man following behind was clothed only in a long linen shirt. When the mob tried to grab him, 52 he slipped out of his shirt and ran away naked.

Psalm 52

Psalm 52

For the choir director: A psalm[a] of David, regarding the time Doeg the Edomite said to Saul, “David has gone to see Ahimelech.”

Why do you boast about your crimes, great warrior?
Don’t you realize God’s justice continues forever?
All day long you plot destruction.
Your tongue cuts like a sharp razor;
you’re an expert at telling lies.
You love evil more than good
and lies more than truth. Interlude

You love to destroy others with your words,
you liar!
But God will strike you down once and for all.
He will pull you from your home
and uproot you from the land of the living. Interlude

The righteous will see it and be amazed.
They will laugh and say,
“Look what happens to mighty warriors
who do not trust in God.
They trust their wealth instead
and grow more and more bold in their wickedness.”

But I am like an olive tree, thriving in the house of God.
I will always trust in God’s unfailing love.
I will praise you forever, O God,
for what you have done.
I will trust in your good name
in the presence of your faithful people.

Numbers 10:1-11:23, Mark 14:1-21, Psalms 51:1-19, Proverbs 10:31-32

Today is the 8th day of March. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian and it is a pleasure to be here with you at the end of another work week. And I am glad for that. A little more sleep through the weekend and that should be the end of the jet lag and that’ll be great. At any rate it is it is a pleasure and it is a joy to come around the global campfire together with you and allow God’s word to speak. We’re reading from the New Living Translation this week. Today, Numbers chapter 10 verse 2 through 11:23.

Commentary:

Okay. So, it’s not a bad idea to remember Psalm 51. It’s not a bad idea to know where that is and how to get there because the cry of repentance found in Psalm 51 really does portray for us the posture of heart that we need to go to God with when we have things we need to confess. And it’s really easy, especially when you’re dealing with things that maybe we’ve been dealing with for a long time and it’s kind of like, you know, I’ve confessed this a thousand times and I’m sure that my heavenly Father is disgusted with me. It’s important to know that He’s not and this feeling that we may feel is how were supposed to feel. And it’s doubtful that many if any of us are in the predicament that David was in when this prayer was prayed because David had a bunch of chaos and scandal going on. He had gotten another man’s wife pregnant and he had had that man killed to cover it up. And that man happened to be one of the 30 most loyal warriors to David. And, so, David had taken his friend’s wife, gotten his friends wife pregnant, and then killed his friend. That, I mean, that is about as low as it gets. So, coming back to Psalm 51 and just understanding the posture of crying out from your heart in repentance and asking God for His mercy and then expecting that He can create in you a clean heart and renew a right spirit within you, this is so helpful.

Prayer:

Father, we take counsel of your word that you have brought into our lives today. This is an opportunity for us to come humbly with our hat in hand down upon our knees before you, understanding that you are the great and Almighty God. And yes, you are our Father. And Father, we have sinned against you in thought, word and deed by what we have done and by what we have left undone. Purify us from our sins and we will be clean, wash us and we will be made whiter than snow, give us back our joy again, don’t see our sins, remove the stain of our guilt. Create in us a clean heart, oh God. Renew a loyal spirit within us. Do not banish us from your presence or take your Holy Spirit. Restore joy of our salvation and make us willing to obey you. We repent of our sins and we ask your Holy Spirit to change us from within. And may how we live this day reveal what you are doing in us as we are purified. Come Holy Spirit we pray. In Jesus’ name we ask. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hi Daily Audio Bible family, this is Mary Lynn from New Brunswick calling once again. And this time is the first time I’m calling for a prayer request for myself. I had __ with God because he just called for me, but I would like to lift up my marriage. I don’t want to make it sound like we are in crisis. I have a wonderful husband who is a good provider and he’s got so many great qualities, but he walked away from the Lord probably about 15 years ago now and as I continue to grow it just becomes a continues to become…it continues to become more of more of a bone of contention between us. I keep trying to serve the Lord and please Him and do things that I know that the Holy Spirit is telling me to do and, for whatever reason, a lot of time that causes strife in our marriage. So, if you would just lift him up, his name is Dennis. He is saved as I said but he‘s just…the last 15 years…in all honesty, he’s never told me what happened but I believe it had a little bit to do with some church hurt that went on through our church. And I guess for me it’s a little easier to understand that humans are humans and we’re not to follow Christians, we’re to follow Christ. So, I would really appreciate it if you would lift up him and our marriage and just that he would be enlightened, that the Holy Spirit would fall fresh on him and that his conviction would bring him back into a constant walk with the Lord and that our marriage would begin to be revitalized in that area. So, I just continue to lift all of you up. I continue lift up To Be a Blessing and Christie in Kentucky and His Little Cherry. You guys are constantly on my mind. So, God bless you all. Thank you and have a great day. Bye.

Hi Daily Audio family, __ from the UK here. I’d like to pray for my dear close friend Andrea Allison who last year suffered the acrimony of her husband cheating on her. So, consequently they’re separated. She’s been totally __ in un-peacefulness since with her ex being really nasty and manipulative over the children and custody. She’s really confused emotionally, really not sure, she goes from partner to partner. I really pray that these two guys….that she’ll find the Lord and that, with me being in her life to help her, to encourage her, and to be to a support for her, that she’ll get healing and a healing in her spirit, soul, and mind and that she’ll be on the journey and that God will show His love to her in a massive way. And pray for her boys, Warren and Charlie as they go through…see mommy and dad separated and get used to this new life and new beginning. Thank you for your prayers. I really appreciate you. God bless all of you. Bye-bye.

Hi Daily Audio Bible this is Rebecca from Michigan, it’s March 5th and I just have to pray for some people. I heard about a man here with bulimic issues and I always thought women had that problem, but I guess men have that problem too. I want to pray for him and I want to pray for the person that can’t walk, that was told that they can’t walk and the person who needs sight. Lord Jesus, I pray for this man that has a bulimic issue. I pray that he can find himself a recovery a course with the 12 steps because I know a lot of people that have eating issues that have been to this group and been delivered. I actually know somebody right now who had over eating issues and she’s been delivered, and I’ve never seen her smile so much in her life, and actually she works in a restaurant. So, I pray for this man to overcome his bulimic issues. And I pray for the lady who was told she could never walk again, and she’s burdened down her eight-year-old mom. I guess she’s got to wheel her around and take her a lot of places, but you know what, I know You have healed the lame and heal the blind and You are able to heal this person and perform very much a lot of miracles, people being healed that were told they could never walk or never see again or whatever. But see God I know You, Your bigger than all these issues, Your bigger than what a doctor may say or a person may say because our hope is in You and it’s not in a man. You do not live but I pray by faith that this person will walk again and be…

Hey Daily Audio Bible family, this is to be a blessing in California. Happy Tuesday, March 5th. I gotta tell ya, it doesn’t stop, the work scenario is deep and wide and thick and high, but our God is bigger than all of that. I’m whining to myself, I’m complaining, I’m __, I’m grumbling. People are on my very last nerve. I mean, really, the situation I’m going through, this is week four and it just seems to kind of be stirring around like quicksand or a whirlpool. But how sweet is God, He reminded me of a 95-year young woman who has been in a convalescent home. She really has no ability to get up and out of bed and Miss Martha is the sweetest thing ever. She has an amazing attitude, just had her 95th birthday and she’s hoping to live to 100. Her family is in different parts of the country. She doesn’t have a lot of visitors and yet God is her dearest friend. That certainly gives me hope and encouragement that while I’m going through whatever it is I’m going through, if someone can be bedridden, love Jesus, and be sweetest can be, so can I. Thank God for role models. Thank God for your prayers. Thank God for the Daily Audio Bible. Have a good evening. Bye-bye.

Hi this is Jonathan from North Carolina calling to pray for Angela from California. Lord, I just want to lift up Angela and these struggles that she’s having with suicidal thoughts and difficulties that she’s experiencing and the darkness that she’s going through. Lord, I just pray that You would help her to sense Your presence that she is feeling battling these thoughts when her daughters not around. Help her to be able to enjoy this season with her daughter, that she is expecting a baby, and as well as to be able to enjoy those times alone Lord, that You would make her feel the sense of Your presence. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Numbers 10:1-11:23

The Silver Trumpets

10 Now the Lord said to Moses, “Make two trumpets of hammered silver for calling the community to assemble and for signaling the breaking of camp. When both trumpets are blown, everyone must gather before you at the entrance of the Tabernacle.[a] But if only one trumpet is blown, then only the leaders—the heads of the clans of Israel—must present themselves to you.

“When you sound the signal to move on, the tribes camped on the east side of the Tabernacle must break camp and move forward. When you sound the signal a second time, the tribes camped on the south will follow. You must sound short blasts as the signal for moving on. But when you call the people to an assembly, blow the trumpets with a different signal. Only the priests, Aaron’s descendants, are allowed to blow the trumpets. This is a permanent law for you, to be observed from generation to generation.

“When you arrive in your own land and go to war against your enemies who attack you, sound the alarm with the trumpets. Then the Lord your God will remember you and rescue you from your enemies. 10 Blow the trumpets in times of gladness, too, sounding them at your annual festivals and at the beginning of each month. And blow the trumpets over your burnt offerings and peace offerings. The trumpets will remind your God of his covenant with you. I am the Lord your God.”

The Israelites Leave Sinai

11 In the second year after Israel’s departure from Egypt—on the twentieth day of the second month[b]—the cloud lifted from the Tabernacle of the Covenant.[c] 12 So the Israelites set out from the wilderness of Sinai and traveled on from place to place until the cloud stopped in the wilderness of Paran.

13 When the people set out for the first time, following the instructions the Lord had given through Moses, 14 Judah’s troops led the way. They marched behind their banner, and their leader was Nahshon son of Amminadab. 15 They were joined by the troops of the tribe of Issachar, led by Nethanel son of Zuar, 16 and the troops of the tribe of Zebulun, led by Eliab son of Helon.

17 Then the Tabernacle was taken down, and the Gershonite and Merarite divisions of the Levites were next in the line of march, carrying the Tabernacle with them. 18 Reuben’s troops went next, marching behind their banner. Their leader was Elizur son of Shedeur. 19 They were joined by the troops of the tribe of Simeon, led by Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai, 20 and the troops of the tribe of Gad, led by Eliasaph son of Deuel.

21 Next came the Kohathite division of the Levites, carrying the sacred objects from the Tabernacle. Before they arrived at the next camp, the Tabernacle would already be set up at its new location. 22 Ephraim’s troops went next, marching behind their banner. Their leader was Elishama son of Ammihud. 23 They were joined by the troops of the tribe of Manasseh, led by Gamaliel son of Pedahzur, 24 and the troops of the tribe of Benjamin, led by Abidan son of Gideoni.

25 Dan’s troops went last, marching behind their banner and serving as the rear guard for all the tribal camps. Their leader was Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai. 26 They were joined by the troops of the tribe of Asher, led by Pagiel son of Ocran, 27 and the troops of the tribe of Naphtali, led by Ahira son of Enan.

28 This was the order in which the Israelites marched, division by division.

29 One day Moses said to his brother-in-law, Hobab son of Reuel the Midianite, “We are on our way to the place the Lord promised us, for he said, ‘I will give it to you.’ Come with us and we will treat you well, for the Lord has promised wonderful blessings for Israel!”

30 But Hobab replied, “No, I will not go. I must return to my own land and family.”

31 “Please don’t leave us,” Moses pleaded. “You know the places in the wilderness where we should camp. Come, be our guide. 32 If you do, we’ll share with you all the blessings the Lord gives us.”

33 They marched for three days after leaving the mountain of the Lord, with the Ark of the Lord’s Covenant moving ahead of them to show them where to stop and rest. 34 As they moved on each day, the cloud of the Lord hovered over them. 35 And whenever the Ark set out, Moses would shout, “Arise, O Lord, and let your enemies be scattered! Let them flee before you!” 36 And when the Ark was set down, he would say, “Return, O Lord, to the countless thousands of Israel!”

The People Complain to Moses

11 Soon the people began to complain about their hardship, and the Lord heard everything they said. Then the Lord’s anger blazed against them, and he sent a fire to rage among them, and he destroyed some of the people in the outskirts of the camp. Then the people screamed to Moses for help, and when he prayed to the Lord, the fire stopped. After that, the area was known as Taberah (which means “the place of burning”), because fire from the Lord had burned among them there.

Then the foreign rabble who were traveling with the Israelites began to crave the good things of Egypt. And the people of Israel also began to complain. “Oh, for some meat!” they exclaimed. “We remember the fish we used to eat for free in Egypt. And we had all the cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions, and garlic we wanted. But now our appetites are gone. All we ever see is this manna!”

The manna looked like small coriander seeds, and it was pale yellow like gum resin. The people would go out and gather it from the ground. They made flour by grinding it with hand mills or pounding it in mortars. Then they boiled it in a pot and made it into flat cakes. These cakes tasted like pastries baked with olive oil. The manna came down on the camp with the dew during the night.

10 Moses heard all the families standing in the doorways of their tents whining, and the Lord became extremely angry. Moses was also very aggravated. 11 And Moses said to the Lord, “Why are you treating me, your servant, so harshly? Have mercy on me! What did I do to deserve the burden of all these people? 12 Did I give birth to them? Did I bring them into the world? Why did you tell me to carry them in my arms like a mother carries a nursing baby? How can I carry them to the land you swore to give their ancestors? 13 Where am I supposed to get meat for all these people? They keep whining to me, saying, ‘Give us meat to eat!’ 14 I can’t carry all these people by myself! The load is far too heavy! 15 If this is how you intend to treat me, just go ahead and kill me. Do me a favor and spare me this misery!”

Moses Chooses Seventy Leaders

16 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Gather before me seventy men who are recognized as elders and leaders of Israel. Bring them to the Tabernacle[d] to stand there with you. 17 I will come down and talk to you there. I will take some of the Spirit that is upon you, and I will put the Spirit upon them also. They will bear the burden of the people along with you, so you will not have to carry it alone.

18 “And say to the people, ‘Purify yourselves, for tomorrow you will have meat to eat. You were whining, and the Lord heard you when you cried, “Oh, for some meat! We were better off in Egypt!” Now the Lord will give you meat, and you will have to eat it. 19 And it won’t be for just a day or two, or for five or ten or even twenty. 20 You will eat it for a whole month until you gag and are sick of it. For you have rejected the Lord, who is here among you, and you have whined to him, saying, “Why did we ever leave Egypt?”’”

21 But Moses responded to the Lord, “There are 600,000 foot soldiers here with me, and yet you say, ‘I will give them meat for a whole month!’ 22 Even if we butchered all our flocks and herds, would that satisfy them? Even if we caught all the fish in the sea, would that be enough?”

23 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Has my arm lost its power? Now you will see whether or not my word comes true!”

Mark 14:1-21

Jesus Anointed at Bethany

14 It was now two days before Passover and the Festival of Unleavened Bread. The leading priests and the teachers of religious law were still looking for an opportunity to capture Jesus secretly and kill him. “But not during the Passover celebration,” they agreed, “or the people may riot.”

Meanwhile, Jesus was in Bethany at the home of Simon, a man who had previously had leprosy. While he was eating,[a] a woman came in with a beautiful alabaster jar of expensive perfume made from essence of nard. She broke open the jar and poured the perfume over his head.

Some of those at the table were indignant. “Why waste such expensive perfume?” they asked. “It could have been sold for a year’s wages[b] and the money given to the poor!” So they scolded her harshly.

But Jesus replied, “Leave her alone. Why criticize her for doing such a good thing to me? You will always have the poor among you, and you can help them whenever you want to. But you will not always have me. She has done what she could and has anointed my body for burial ahead of time. I tell you the truth, wherever the Good News is preached throughout the world, this woman’s deed will be remembered and discussed.”

Judas Agrees to Betray Jesus

10 Then Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve disciples, went to the leading priests to arrange to betray Jesus to them. 11 They were delighted when they heard why he had come, and they promised to give him money. So he began looking for an opportunity to betray Jesus.

The Last Supper

12 On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread, when the Passover lamb is sacrificed, Jesus’ disciples asked him, “Where do you want us to go to prepare the Passover meal for you?”

13 So Jesus sent two of them into Jerusalem with these instructions: “As you go into the city, a man carrying a pitcher of water will meet you. Follow him. 14 At the house he enters, say to the owner, ‘The Teacher asks: Where is the guest room where I can eat the Passover meal with my disciples?’ 15 He will take you upstairs to a large room that is already set up. That is where you should prepare our meal.” 16 So the two disciples went into the city and found everything just as Jesus had said, and they prepared the Passover meal there.

17 In the evening Jesus arrived with the Twelve. 18 As they were at the table[c] eating, Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, one of you eating with me here will betray me.”

19 Greatly distressed, each one asked in turn, “Am I the one?”

20 He replied, “It is one of you twelve who is eating from this bowl with me. 21 For the Son of Man[d] must die, as the Scriptures declared long ago. But how terrible it will be for the one who betrays him. It would be far better for that man if he had never been born!”

Psalm 51

Psalm 51

For the choir director: A psalm of David, regarding the time Nathan the prophet came to him after David had committed adultery with Bathsheba.

Have mercy on me, O God,
because of your unfailing love.
Because of your great compassion,
blot out the stain of my sins.
Wash me clean from my guilt.
Purify me from my sin.
For I recognize my rebellion;
it haunts me day and night.
Against you, and you alone, have I sinned;
I have done what is evil in your sight.
You will be proved right in what you say,
and your judgment against me is just.[a]
For I was born a sinner—
yes, from the moment my mother conceived me.
But you desire honesty from the womb,[b]
teaching me wisdom even there.

Purify me from my sins,[c] and I will be clean;
wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.
Oh, give me back my joy again;
you have broken me—
now let me rejoice.
Don’t keep looking at my sins.
Remove the stain of my guilt.
10 Create in me a clean heart, O God.
Renew a loyal spirit within me.
11 Do not banish me from your presence,
and don’t take your Holy Spirit[d] from me.

12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation,
and make me willing to obey you.
13 Then I will teach your ways to rebels,
and they will return to you.
14 Forgive me for shedding blood, O God who saves;
then I will joyfully sing of your forgiveness.
15 Unseal my lips, O Lord,
that my mouth may praise you.

16 You do not desire a sacrifice, or I would offer one.
You do not want a burnt offering.
17 The sacrifice you desire is a broken spirit.
You will not reject a broken and repentant heart, O God.
18 Look with favor on Zion and help her;
rebuild the walls of Jerusalem.
19 Then you will be pleased with sacrifices offered in the right spirit—
with burnt offerings and whole burnt offerings.
Then bulls will again be sacrificed on your altar.

Footnotes:

  1. 51:4 Greek version reads and you will win your case in court. Compare Rom 3:4.
  2. 51:6 Or from the heart; Hebrew reads in the inward parts.
  3. 51:7 Hebrew Purify me with the hyssop branch.
  4. 51:11 Or your spirit of holiness.

Proverbs 10:31-32

31 The mouth of the godly person gives wise advice,
but the tongue that deceives will be cut off.

32 The lips of the godly speak helpful words,
but the mouth of the wicked speaks perverse words.
