Micah 1-4

(A)During the time that Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah were kings of Judah, the Lord gave this message to Micah, who was from the town of Moresheth. The Lord revealed to Micah all these things about Samaria and Jerusalem.

A Lament for Samaria and Jerusalem

Hear this, all you nations;
listen to this, all who live on earth!
The Sovereign Lord will testify against you.
Listen! He speaks from his heavenly temple.
The Lord is coming from his holy place;
he will come down and walk on the tops of the mountains.
Then the mountains will melt under him
like wax in a fire;
they will pour down into the valleys
like water pouring down a hill.

All this will happen because the people of Israel have sinned and rebelled against God. Who is to blame for Israel's rebellion? Samaria, the capital city itself Who is guilty of idolatry in Judah? Jerusalem itself So the Lord says, “I will make Samaria a pile of ruins in the open country, a place for planting grapevines. I will pour the rubble of the city down into the valley, and will lay bare the city's foundations. All its precious idols will be smashed to pieces, everything given to its temple prostitutes will be destroyed by fire, and all its images will become a desolate heap. Samaria acquired these things for its fertility rites, and now her enemies will carry them off for temple prostitutes elsewhere.”

Then Micah said, “Because of this I will mourn and lament. To show my sorrow, I will walk around barefoot and naked. I will howl like a jackal and wail like an ostrich. Samaria's wounds cannot be healed, and Judah is about to suffer in the same way; destruction has reached the gates of Jerusalem itself, where my people live.”

The Enemy Approaches Jerusalem

10 Don't tell our enemies in Gath about our defeat; don't let them see you weeping. People of Beth Leaphrah,[a] show your despair by rolling in the dust! 11 You people of Shaphir, go into exile, naked and ashamed. Those who live in Zaanan do not dare to come out of their city. When you hear the people of Bethezel mourn, you will know that there is no refuge there. 12 The people of Maroth anxiously wait for relief, because the Lord has brought disaster close to Jerusalem. 13 You that live in Lachish, hitch the horses to the chariots. You imitated the sins of Israel and so caused Jerusalem to sin. 14 And now, people of Judah, say good-bye to the town of Moresheth Gath. The kings of Israel will get no help from the town of Achzib.

15 People of Mareshah, the Lord will hand you over to an enemy, who is going to capture your town. The leaders of Israel will go and hide in the cave at Adullam. 16 People of Judah, cut off your hair in mourning for the children you love. Make yourselves as bald as vultures, because your children will be taken away from you into exile.

The Fate of Those Who Oppress the Poor

How terrible it will be for those who lie awake and plan evil! When morning comes, as soon as they have the chance, they do the evil they planned. When they want fields, they seize them; when they want houses, they take them. No one's family or property is safe.

And so the Lord says, “I am planning to bring disaster on you, and you will not be able to escape it. You are going to find yourselves in trouble, and then you will not walk so proudly any more. When that time comes, people will use the story about you as an example of disaster, and they will sing this song of despair about your experience:

We are completely ruined!
The Lord has taken our land away
And given it to those who took us captive.”[b]

So then, when the time comes for the land to be given back to the Lord's people, there will be no share for any of you.

The people preach at me and say, “Don't preach at us. Don't preach about all that. God is not going to disgrace us. Do you think the people of Israel are under a curse?[c] Has the Lord lost his patience? Would he really do such things? Doesn't he[d] speak kindly to those who do right?”

The Lord replies, “You attack my people[e] like enemies. Men return from battle, thinking they are safe at home, but there you are, waiting to steal the coats off their backs. You drive the women of my people out of the homes they love, and you have robbed their children of my blessings forever. 10 Get up and go; there is no safety here any more. Your sins have doomed this place to destruction.

11 “These people want the kind of prophet who goes around full of lies and deceit and says, ‘I prophesy that wine and liquor will flow for you.’

12 “But I will gather you together, all you people of Israel that are left. I will bring you together like sheep returning to the fold. Like a pasture full of sheep, your land will once again be filled with many people.”

13 God will open the way for them and lead them out of exile. They will break out of the city gates and go free. Their king, the Lord himself, will lead them out.

Micah Denounces Israel's Leaders

Listen, you rulers of Israel! You are supposed to be concerned about justice, yet you hate what is good and you love what is evil. You skin my people alive and tear the flesh off their bones. You eat my people up. You strip off their skin, break their bones, and chop them up like meat for the pot. The time is coming when you will cry out to the Lord, but he will not answer you. He will not listen to your prayers, for you have done evil.

My people are deceived by prophets who promise peace to those who pay them, but threaten war for those who don't. To these prophets the Lord says, “Prophets, your day is almost over; the sun is going down on you. Because you mislead my people, you will have no more prophetic visions, and you will not be able to predict anything.” Those who predict the future will be disgraced by their failure. They will all be humiliated because God does not answer them.

But as for me, the Lord fills me with his spirit and power, and gives me a sense of justice and the courage to tell the people of Israel what their sins are. Listen to me, you rulers of Israel, you that hate justice and turn right into wrong. 10 You are building God's city, Jerusalem, on a foundation of murder and injustice. 11 The city's rulers govern for bribes, the priests interpret the Law for pay, the prophets give their revelations for money—and they all claim that the Lord is with them. “No harm will come to us,” they say. “The Lord is with us.”

12 (B)And so, because of you, Zion will be plowed like a field, Jerusalem will become a pile of ruins, and the Temple hill will become a forest.

The Lord's Universal Reign of Peace(C)

In days to come
the mountain where the Temple stands
will be the highest one of all,
towering above all the hills.
Many nations will come streaming to it,
and their people will say,
“Let us go up the hill of the Lord,[f]
to the Temple of Israel's God.
He will teach us what he wants us to do;
we will walk in the paths he has chosen.
For the Lord's teaching comes from Jerusalem;
from Zion he speaks to his people.”

(D)He will settle disputes among the nations,
among the great powers near and far.
They will hammer their swords into plows
and their spears into pruning knives.
Nations will never again go to war,
never prepare for battle again.
(E)Everyone will live in peace
among their own vineyards and fig trees,
and no one will make them afraid.
The Lord Almighty has promised this.

Each nation worships and obeys its own god, but we will worship and obey the Lord our God forever and ever.

Israel Will Return from Exile

“The time is coming,” says the Lord, “when I will gather together the people I punished, those who have suffered in exile. They are crippled and far from home, but I will make a new beginning with those who are left, and they will become a great nation. I will rule over them on Mount Zion from that time on and forever.”

And you, Jerusalem, where God, like a shepherd from his lookout tower, watches over his people, will once again be the capital of the kingdom that was yours. Why do you cry out so loudly? Why are you suffering like a woman in labor? Is it because you have no king, and your counselors are dead? 10 Twist and groan,[g] people of Jerusalem, like a woman giving birth, for now you will have to leave the city and live in the open country. You will have to go to Babylon, but there the Lord will save you from your enemies. 11 Many nations have gathered to attack you. They say, “Jerusalem must be destroyed! We will see this city in ruins!” 12 But these nations do not know what is in the Lord's mind. They do not realize that they have been gathered together to be punished in the same way that grain is brought in to be threshed.

13 The Lord says, “People of Jerusalem, go and punish your enemies! I will make you as strong as a bull with iron horns and bronze hoofs. You will crush many nations, and the wealth they got by violence you will present to me, the Lord of the whole world.”

Revelation 6

The Seals

Then I saw the Lamb break open the first of the seven seals, and I heard one of the four living creatures say in a voice that sounded like thunder, “Come!” (A)I looked, and there was a white horse. Its rider held a bow, and he was given a crown. He rode out as a conqueror to conquer.

Then the Lamb broke open the second seal; and I heard the second living creature say, “Come!” (B)Another horse came out, a red one. Its rider was given the power to bring war on the earth, so that people should kill each other. He was given a large sword.

(C)Then the Lamb broke open the third seal; and I heard the third living creature say, “Come!” I looked, and there was a black horse. Its rider held a pair of scales in his hand. I heard what sounded like a voice coming from among the four living creatures, which said, “A quart of wheat for a day's wages, and three quarts of barley for a day's wages. But do not damage the olive trees and the vineyards!”

Then the Lamb broke open the fourth seal; and I heard the fourth living creature say, “Come!” (D)I looked, and there was a pale-colored horse. Its rider was named Death, and Hades[a] followed close behind. They were given authority over one fourth of the earth, to kill by means of war, famine, disease, and wild animals.

Then the Lamb broke open the fifth seal. I saw underneath the altar the souls of those who had been killed because they had proclaimed God's word and had been faithful in their witnessing. 10 They shouted in a loud voice, “Almighty Lord, holy and true! How long will it be until you judge the people on earth and punish them for killing us?” 11 (E)Each of them was given a white robe, and they were told to rest a little while longer, until the complete number of other servants and believers were killed, as they had been.

12 (F)And I saw the Lamb break open the sixth seal. There was a violent earthquake, and the sun became black like coarse black cloth, and the moon turned completely red like blood. 13 (G)The stars fell down to the earth, like unripe figs falling from the tree when a strong wind shakes it. 14 (H)The sky disappeared like a scroll being rolled up, and every mountain and island was moved from its place. 15 (I)Then the kings of the earth, the rulers and the military chiefs, the rich and the powerful, and all other people, slave and free, hid themselves in caves and under rocks on the mountains. 16 (J)They called out to the mountains and to the rocks, “Fall on us and hide us from the eyes of the one who sits on the throne and from the anger of the Lamb! 17 (K)The terrible day of their anger is here, and who can stand up against it?”

Proverbs 30:1-4

The Words of Agur

30 These are the solemn words of Agur son of Jakeh:

“God is not with me, God is not with me,
and I am helpless.[a]
I am more like an animal than a human being;
I do not have the sense we humans should have.
I have never learned any wisdom,
and I know nothing at all about God.
Have any ever mastered heavenly knowledge?
Have any ever caught the wind in their hands?
Or wrapped up water in a piece of cloth?
Or fixed the boundaries of the earth?
Who are they, if you know? Who are their children?

Jonah 1:1-4:11, Revelation 5:1-14, Psalm 133:1-3, Proverbs 29:26-27

Today is the 14th day of December welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I am Brian it is wonderful to be here with you today as we continue our journey and take the next step forward through the Scriptures. We’re moving at a rapid pace. We move at a rapid pace during December because we’re moving through so many different pieces of…well…different texts in the Scriptures. And, so, we began the book…we began the week yesterday by reading in its entirety the book of Obadiah, which is the shortest book in the Old Testament just 21 verses and we spoke about that. Obviously, we read the whole book of Obadiah. So, we’ve got new territory to enter into today and we will read in its entirety the book of Jonah, which is another one of the minor prophets.

Introduction to the book of Jonah:

Jonah obviously, Jonah and the whale, this is a Sunday school story, a very, very famous story but the story in its full context is pretty unique. So, Jonah is a prophet who lived in the northern kingdom of Israel and where he came is just due west of the southern bit of the Sea of Galilee. And he lived during the reign of King Jeroboam the second. Here’s something that makes Jonah really unique in the Bible. Most of the prophets that…that come along, they are calling their own people to repentance. Jonah’s mission wasn’t to talk to his own people. He was to travel to the city of Nineveh, which at the time was one of the largest cities in the world. So, you know, like in modern times like he’s commanded to go to Mexico City or he’s commanded to go to New York City or Los Angeles or London or Cape Town or, you, know, name of a large city. Actually, the archaeological ruins of Nineveh still exist. There near the city of Mosul and Iraq. Many, many of these ancient ruins have been destroyed or at minimum damaged in the recent decade by Isis. So, the long and short of the story is that Jonah has no desire to obey this assignment whatsoever. God wanted him to go to a people who were considered the enemies of Israel, and not just the enemies of Israel but the enemies of God. So, Jonah doesn’t obey. In fact, he goes in the other direction like he doesn't…it…it’s really interesting…you gotta get out a map to see what we’re talking about because this is a tremendous journey from where Jonah lives all the way to Nineveh, a journey that would’ve taken months. There was, you know, no jumpin’ on a plane. So, Jonah actually goes in the other direction. So, if we had a map of Israel and we’re lookin’ at the sea of Galilee and we’re like, “okay, so Jonah lived somewhere to the west of this we would see that for him to go to Joppa to get on a ship would mean for him to go to…essentially we’re modern-day Tel Aviv is on the West Coast of Israel. He was going in the wrong direction. He was truly running from God. So, as we probably all know Jonah ends up in the belly of a great fish and…and he’s there for three days repenting and then he eventually gets spewed out on the shore alive - a fantastic story. And we look at it through different lenses. Like as Christian people, following Jesus there’s this foreshadowing, right, of Jesus in the story. Jonah is the belly of the whale for three days and then he’s spewed out and it’s like a resurrection type story. But like the Bible does most of the time, it’s also a mirror. And, so, when we look at our own lives and see how fear and pride get in, we realize that they lead us into disobedience. I mean once we’ve got fear, pride, and disobedience going on we will notice probably very quickly that we are running from God. And we should realize that running from God is not…it’s not an option because it’s not really a possibility, right? So, if we go to the Psalms and say, “where can I run, where can I flee from your spirit? If I go to the other side of the Sea you are there. If I go into the grave you are there. If I go up to the heavens you are there”, what we are realizing is that running from God is not a possibility. He’s everywhere. And Jonah’s story is a story of a man on the run from God who gets thrown into the open sea to drown. He gets swallowed by a fish. We think what a dramatic thing. And indeed yes, but that fish that swallowed Jonah while he’s on the run from God became his salvation. He would have drowned in that storm. So, yeah, probably riding around in some kind of whale submarine for a few days wouldn’t have been comfortable and…at all…like I can’t…I don’t even know where…I don’t even…I don’t even know where to go with that. It would’ve been terrifying. But it was what God used to save Jonah’s life to get him back onto dry land and get him to complete the mission. So, what we see is that Jonah does indeed go on the run from God and gets swallowed by a whale but that never had that happen. Jonah could’ve obeyed. He could’ve just gone on his mission, saved a lot of time and a lot of grief. Do you see the mirror? Do you see when we get pride and arrogance and all of this stuff going on and fear and disobedience and rebellion and we are on the run from God we are only wasting time. We’re going in the wrong direction. We’re gonna have to come back. We could just obey. And we might also find that we are on the run from God how life can feel like it is swallowing us. And we can be so mad. We can be mad at God that we are on the run from Him and life is swallowing us, or we could throw up our hands in surrender and repentance and realize maybe this thing that has got us swallowed right now is taking us back to safety so that we get another chance to obey. So, let’s hold onto that as we dive in here. We will read Jonah in its entirety, four chapters. We’re reading from the Good News Translation. The book of Jonah.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word. We thank You for the story of Jonah and we’ve talked about it and now we’ve read the whole thing and we look at the way that the whole story ends. Jonah does obey You and then he is so upset that You are kind and gracious. And we confess, that’s inside of us too. Maybe it doesn’t see the light of day a lot but that’s inside of us too. And, so, we repent of that. Between the book of Obadiah yesterday and the book of Jonah today and the theme of Your care and long-suffering, kindness for people and Your distaste, and that’s a lightweight word, Your complete dissatisfaction with the way that we can behave toward one another, the way we can stand back, and watch family get hurt, the way that we can stand back and watch brothers and sisters in Christ get hurt. We see in the Psalm today how wonderful it is, how pleasant for God’s people to live together in harmony, O Lord God this is our desire going forward going into a new year. This year has indeed revealed many of the places that we are divided. Now we need to come together as one following Your Holy Spirit’s guidance, not following a person or anything else, being led by Your spirit to a higher calling, one that models for the world what it is supposed to look like to be a redeemed son and daughter of the most-high God. And we just blend the culture and behave the same way that we see be…being demonstrated, being modeled. You’ve called us to something new, a new way of doing this, a way in which we can become like the Savior, we can become Christ like in this world. And, so, help us Holy Spirit to take all that we are learning, even as things speed up here in these last days of the year, all that we are learning and plant it in the soil of our lives so that it creates change in us. Come Holy Spirit we pray. All of this we ask in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Announcements:

dailyaudiobible.com is home base, that is the website, that is…well…that’s the home of the Global Campfire. That’s where you find out what’s going on around here and, of course, if you’re using the Daily Audio Bible app you can find all these things within the app as well. But this is home base. So, check it out and stay familiar and stay connected.

It’s Christmas time so we got a couple of Christmas things going on. We are inviting you to get involved in our annual Christmas party, which is a virtual Christmas party, and you participate by adding your voice. You can call in a Christmas greeting to the community that you’ve been sharing all year as we’ve moved through the Scriptures. You can do that by using the prayer line. So, the Hotline button in the app, the little red button up at the top or the phone number 877-942-4253. So, yup, call in your holiday greetings now to be included in the…in the Christmas party that we have. Each year Jill and I, we get together and have a conversation, just kinda look back over the year and talking about life for us and where we feel like the Lord’s leading things in this community. Maybe the next word for the next year, not maybe, the word for the next year. And, yeah, we spend some time together like that and then we…then we listen to each other talking about Christmas and get some hot coffee. I love it. It makes…it makes me cry every year. I love it. It’s like one of the most beautiful…I look forward to it. I love it. So, if you want to participate you can call in now. Here’s the rule. That’s the prayer line and normally that’s like a one call thing. Right now, if you have a prayer request or a holiday greeting just make sure they’re separate. Call in your holiday greeting and if you have a prayer request or encouragement call that in separate so that we can keep them separate or they’ll have no home, they’ll have no place to go. So, just observe that. And I would say we are down to our last couple of days. Wednesday will be the last day that we will be able to do these calls. So, yeah, don’t procrastinate.

And then the other thing that’s going on is the Daily Audio Bible Shop. Normally we have a Christmas box each year. Due to, you know, the circumstances that pandemics bring to the world we just…we’ve have had to juggle. And, so, we’re just inviting you to check out the Daily Audio Bible Shop. There are a number of fantastic gift ideas in there, things that you may want to gift to yourself and definitely things you may want to gift to others. So, check that out. If you spend $40 or more in the Shop, we will send you the 2020 Christmas ornament that we normally include exclusively in our Christmas boxes. But this year…yeah…it’s a little different. You can make up your own Christmas box and we will be happy to include that as long as supplies last. So, check that out as well.

If you want to partner with the Daily Audio Bible, you can do that at dailyaudiobible.com. And I cannot thank you enough. I cannot…I cannot thank you enough. It’s so shocking that every day we’re here and we’re in this together. And, so, thank you. If what we’re doing as a community bringing God’s spoken word read fresh every day and offered freely to the world to anyone who will listen to it wherever they may be whatever time it might be and to build community around this rhythm of showing up every day, just showing up every day. If that has made a difference then thank you for your partnership, especially this time of the year. So, there is a link on the homepage. If you’re using the app you can press the Give button in the upper right-hand corner, or the mailing address is PO Box 1996 Spring Hill Tennessee 37174.

And, as always, if you have a prayer request or encouragement or holiday greeting you can it the Hotline button in the app, which is the red button up at the top or you can dial 877-942-4253.

And that’s it for today. I’m Brian I love you and I’ll be waiting for you here tomorrow.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hello greetings Christopher who started listening when he was nine and called first and called again when he was 19. Thank you for returning to us with a message of gladness for the family that follows Jesus in the Bible here. I’ve been here for around I think eight years now and Father is so good. I can’t help but to be returning because this is…it’s like the walking staff I hold onto when I walk through the day. And I begin with it and I thank the Lord for the word He speaks. His word is continual. It doesn’t change. I praise the Lord for your…for being with you in your study, for blessing you as you continue and find a job and to make your plans for life and I pray that He will inspire you and bring good people into your life as you continue your family and your faith and joy in the Lord. Amen.

Hello, my name is Carolyn and I’m in North Carolina and I’m requesting prayer for myself and for my husband. We just passed our first year of marriage and we’re experiencing some…some difficulties. I believe there’s…there’s some mental illness going on and we just need some prayer for our marriage. Just that God will open eyes and open our years and our hearts and help us to treat each other better, to get some help for the mental illness issues and just to overcome this spirit or whatever it is that is causing problems within our marriage. I lost my best friend this year and it’s just been a really difficult year. So, other than my Lord I have no one else to talk to. And I am prayerful that He will see us through this. Thank you.

Good morning Daily Audio Bible family this is The Openhearted Overcomer. I’m calling in this morning because my heart is heavy for those who are experiencing mental health conditions or have family members or friends who are. This is a difficult time of year for people with brain disorders. And, so, I’d just like to lift up a prayer now for all of you who are experiencing this in your life in some way shape or form. Dear heavenly Father I just thank You for life. I thank You for our complex brains that You’ve given us so that we can love and learn and give and grow together. I pray for those people who are experiencing chemical imbalances in their brain and they don’t feel the joy that Christmas spirit should have. And Father God I just pray that You will lift depression and You will cause all of these brain chemicals to come into balance, especially at this time of year so that we can experience the joy and the gift of Jesus Christ. I pray for all of those who are discouraged by brain disorders. Father, we know that a brain disorder is similar to any other disorder, it’s chemical, it’s biological and we’re just asking for healing Father God. We just ask that Your Holy Spirit descend upon all of those who are listening. We thank You that Your healing brains and that You are bringing joy in the midst of pain and sorrow. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Good morning DAB family this is Donna from Cleveland Ohio. This is my second call in seven years that I’ve been listening. I want you to know that I love you all and that I pray along with each and every one of you. I have a son 23 years old, Max, who left home in February to travel across the country. He’s been traveling as a homeless person living out of his car. On November 23rd he called to inform me that he would be leaving the next day for Somalia. I pleaded with him not to go. So, I prayed for his safety and the next day I got a message that his vehicle had been stolen along with his passport and everything he owned. I know that God saved him from who knows what. But I ask for your prayers for his salvation. I thank you all for listening.

Hey, DABbers this is BFG, a first-time caller from Great Britain with a praise report. A quick background is that my wife and I have a heart to create a healing and retreat space for people affected by complex PTSD. So, in the summer we found a beautiful quiet and light space in Scotland close to the sea and next to the mountains with some buildings we could develop. It does mean a relocation. So, we put our home on the market and I expected God to send us a buyer immediately but when that didn’t happen, I began to wrestle with God and question him every time we had a viewing. My incredible wife though stayed quiet be faithful to the word that you heard at the start of the year, go from your country your people and your father’s house out to the land that I’ll show you. Genesis 12. There is something awesome about the faith and prayers of a mother, a mother knows what it is to carry something inside of her and simply trust. And my wife is no different. So, my praise point. On Tuesday we got an offer on our house. It’s all suddenly become very real and scary but that evening through a devotional knowing what we needed God in faithfulness brought the same word again, go from your country your people and your father’s house out to the land that I’ll show you. And this has so encouraged and strengthened us despite all the unknowns to continue to trust that God’s in control, that He will bring the resources to create a healing space, that we just need to stay in step with Him. So, Father God we give You the honor praise and glory and declare that You alone are sovereign. We praise Your name and ask that You continue to increase our faith and thank You that You’re patient with us. Thank You for the faith of my wife, for Brian and the DAB family and that they are faithful to Your calling. Lord this community truly is Your word made flesh. I love you all.

Jonah 1-4

Jonah Disobeys the Lord

(A)One day the Lord spoke to Jonah son of Amittai. He said, “Go to Nineveh, that great city, and speak out against it; I am aware of how wicked its people are.” Jonah, however, set out in the opposite direction in order to get away from the Lord. He went to Joppa, where he found a ship about to go to Spain. He paid his fare and went aboard with the crew to sail to Spain, where he would be away from the Lord.

But the Lord sent a strong wind on the sea, and the storm was so violent that the ship was in danger of breaking up. The sailors were terrified and cried out for help, each one to his own god. Then, in order to lessen the danger,[a] they threw the cargo[b] overboard. Meanwhile, Jonah had gone below and was lying in the ship's hold, sound asleep.

The captain found him there and said to him, “What are you doing asleep? Get up and pray to your god for help. Maybe he will feel sorry for us and spare our lives.”

The sailors said to each other, “Let's draw lots and find out who is to blame for getting us into this danger.” They did so, and Jonah's name was drawn. So they said to him, “Now, then, tell us! Who is to blame for this? What are you doing here? What country do you come from? What is your nationality?”

“I am a Hebrew,” Jonah answered. “I worship the Lord, the God of heaven, who made land and sea.” 10 Jonah went on to tell them that he was running away from the Lord.

The sailors were terrified, and said to him, “That was an awful thing to do!”[c] 11 The storm was getting worse all the time, so the sailors asked him, “What should we do to you to stop the storm?”

12 Jonah answered, “Throw me into the sea, and it will calm down. I know it is my fault that you are caught in this violent storm.”

13 Instead, the sailors tried to get the ship to shore, rowing with all their might. But the storm was becoming worse and worse, and they got nowhere. 14 So they cried out to the Lord, “O Lord, we pray, don't punish us with death for taking this man's life! You, O Lord, are responsible for all this; it is your doing.” 15 Then they picked Jonah up and threw him into the sea, and it calmed down at once. 16 This made the sailors so afraid of the Lord that they offered a sacrifice and promised to serve him.

17 (B)At the Lord's command a large fish swallowed Jonah, and he was inside the fish for three days and three nights.

Jonah's Prayer

From deep inside the fish Jonah prayed to the Lord his God:

“In my distress, O Lord, I called to you,
and you answered me.
From deep in the world of the dead
I cried for help, and you heard me.
You threw me down into the depths,
to the very bottom of the sea,
where the waters were all around me,
and all your mighty waves rolled over me.
I thought I had been banished from your presence
and would never see your holy Temple again.
The water came over me and choked me;
the sea covered me completely,
and seaweed wrapped around my head.
I went down to the very roots of the mountains,
into the land whose gates lock shut forever.[d]
But you, O Lord my God,
brought me back from the depths alive.
When I felt my life slipping away,
then, O Lord, I prayed to you,
and in your holy Temple you heard me.
Those who worship worthless idols
have abandoned their loyalty to you.
But I will sing praises to you;
I will offer you a sacrifice
and do what I have promised.
Salvation comes from the Lord!”

10 Then the Lord ordered the fish to spit Jonah up on the beach, and it did.

Jonah Obeys the Lord

Once again the Lord spoke to Jonah. He said, “Go to Nineveh, that great city, and proclaim to the people the message I have given you.” So Jonah obeyed the Lord and went to Nineveh, a city so large that it took three days to walk through it. (C)Jonah started through the city, and after walking a whole day, he proclaimed, “In forty days Nineveh will be destroyed!”

The people of Nineveh believed God's message. So they decided that everyone should fast, and all the people, from the greatest to the least, put on sackcloth to show that they had repented.

When the king of Nineveh heard about it, he got up from his throne, took off his robe, put on sackcloth, and sat down in ashes. He sent out a proclamation to the people of Nineveh: “This is an order from the king and his officials: No one is to eat anything; all persons, cattle, and sheep are forbidden to eat or drink. All persons and animals must wear sackcloth. Everyone must pray earnestly to God and must give up their wicked behavior and their evil actions. Perhaps God will change his mind; perhaps he will stop being angry, and we will not die!”

10 God saw what they did; he saw that they had given up their wicked behavior. So he changed his mind and did not punish them as he had said he would.

Jonah's Anger and God's Mercy

Jonah was very unhappy about this and became angry. (D)So he prayed, “Lord, didn't I say before I left home that this is just what you would do? That's why I did my best to run away to Spain! I knew that you are a loving and merciful God, always patient, always kind, and always ready to change your mind and not punish. (E)Now then, Lord, let me die. I am better off dead than alive.”

The Lord answered, “What right do you have to be angry?”

Jonah went out east of the city and sat down. He made a shelter for himself and sat in its shade, waiting to see what would happen to Nineveh. Then the Lord God made a plant grow up over Jonah to give him some shade, so that he would be more comfortable. Jonah was extremely pleased with the plant. But at dawn the next day, at God's command, a worm attacked the plant, and it died. After the sun had risen, God sent a hot east wind, and Jonah was about to faint from the heat of the sun beating down on his head. So he wished he were dead.[e] “I am better off dead than alive,” he said.

But God said to him, “What right do you have to be angry about the plant?”

Jonah replied, “I have every right to be angry—angry enough to die!”

10 The Lord said to him, “This plant grew up in one night and disappeared the next; you didn't do anything for it and you didn't make it grow—yet you feel sorry for it! 11 How much more, then, should I have pity on Nineveh, that great city. After all, it has more than 120,000 innocent children in it, as well as many animals!”

Revelation 5

The Scroll and the Lamb

(A)I saw a scroll in the right hand of the one who sits on the throne; it was covered with writing on both sides and was sealed with seven seals. And I saw a mighty angel, who announced in a loud voice, “Who is worthy to break the seals and open the scroll?” But there was no one in heaven or on earth or in the world below[a] who could open the scroll and look inside it. I cried bitterly because no one could be found who was worthy to open the scroll or look inside it. (B)Then one of the elders said to me, “Don't cry. Look! The Lion from Judah's tribe, the great descendant of David, has won the victory, and he can break the seven seals and open the scroll.”

(C)Then I saw a Lamb standing in the center of the throne, surrounded by the four living creatures and the elders. The Lamb appeared to have been killed. It had seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God that have been sent through the whole earth. The Lamb went and took the scroll from the right hand of the one who sits on the throne. (D)As he did so, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb. Each had a harp and gold bowls filled with incense, which are the prayers of God's people. (E)They sang a new song:

“You are worthy to take the scroll
and to break open its seals.
For you were killed, and by your sacrificial death you bought for God
people from every tribe, language, nation, and race.
10 (F)You have made them a kingdom of priests to serve our God,
and they shall rule on earth.”

11 (G)Again I looked, and I heard angels, thousands and millions of them! They stood around the throne, the four living creatures, and the elders, 12 and sang in a loud voice:

“The Lamb who was killed is worthy
to receive power, wealth, wisdom, and strength,
honor, glory, and praise!”
13 And I heard every creature in heaven, on earth, in the world below, and in the sea—all living beings in the universe—and they were singing:
“To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb,
be praise and honor, glory and might,
forever and ever!”

14 The four living creatures answered, “Amen!” And the elders fell down and worshiped.

Psalm 133

In Praise of Living in Peace[a]

133 How wonderful it is, how pleasant,
for God's people to live together in harmony!
It is like the precious anointing oil
running down from Aaron's head and beard,
down to the collar of his robes.
It is like the dew on Mount Hermon,
falling on the hills of Zion.
That is where the Lord has promised his blessing—
life that never ends.

Obadiah 1:1-21, Revelation 4:1-11, Psalms 132:1-18, Proverbs 29:24-25

Today is the 13th day of December welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I’m Brian it is always a joy to be here with you. It’s always fun to be here at the threshold of a sparkly new week that we get the walk in together…into together and remind ourselves that it’s out in front of us and we haven’t messed anything up yet. It's…it's…it’s there for us to live into and we don’t have to mess it up, it can be a wonderful week. We walk with God in it. And here’s the deal. The irony is, our journey, like we can see…we can see the shore now. We’ve been out in the deep for a long time but there’s a thin line out on the horizon. We can see the landing spot. After today there’s only two more Sundays, like two more beginnings to a week left in this year. And, so, let’s pay attention to that and live into this with all of our heart. So, you know, as we’ve…as we’ve gotten into December, leaving November and getting to this place we’ve realized that yes, indeed we are moving through shorter portions of Scripture. And, so, some of them we’re…we’re in and out of inside of a day. And that’s just the nature of things. As we get to the minor prophets, we encounter just about a book a day. But it was like that in the New Testament before we got to Revelation in some of the smaller letters. And, so, yes, every day it feels like we’re encountering new territory and today is no different.

Introduction to the book of Obadiah:

Today we will be reading in its entirety the book of Obadiah and there’s only 21 verses. This is a shortest book in the entire Old Testament and even though in the text itself Obadiah is identified as the author precious little is known about who this is. The name Obadiah means “servant of Yahweh.” Obadiah wasn’t like unique or uncommon name at the time. So, it makes it difficult to know which Obadiah we’re talking about. Generally, the thought is that Obadiah probably was a contemporary with Jeremiah and that his…his prophetic work used Babylon’s conquest of Jerusalem as the backdrop, as the context. And if this is right then Obadiah would be dated somewhere in the late 500s BC. So, like I said, its only 21 verses. So, it’s pretty short but it…it deals with a pretty big issue, a…a long-running family issue actually. And what we will see is that this prophecy foretells the doom and the destruction of the Edomites. And we might be like, “well…Edomites…weren’t all the “ites” supposed to be destroyed? Like why…why a whole book in the Bible, short as it might be, foretelling the destruction of the Edomites?” The thing is if we go back to the beginning of our adventure, back to the other shore, back to January we have to remember the story of Jacob and Esau. And Jacob, his name was eventually changed to Israel. And, so, Jacob’s sons, his descendants were the children of Israel, whereas Esau’s descendants also flourished in the land and they became the Edomites. So, you remember Jacob working to get the birth right. You remember all of this and Jacob on the run…well…even though the work of Obadiah is thousands of years old it had to been thousands of years at the time of this prophecy, and the rift was still there. We also remember what happened to the children of Israel. We remember that they did flourish, but eventually through famine ended up in Egypt where actually they were enslaved for four centuries. And we’re just kind of fast motioning through our story in the…in the Bible this year, but then Moses comes along and they are freed from slavery in Egypt and they are trying to get to where they need to go and the Edomites wouldn’t allow their own relatives to pass through their land as they traveled toward their own Land of Promise. And there’s other points in history where the Israelites are in war, they’re being attacked and the Edomites have nothing to say. They’re just kind of watching. They don’t get involved in any way, even though their family. And at other times they’re willing to pillage their own family while they're…they’re suffering. And God was not pleased with this. And, so, Obadiah comes and announces the total destruction of Edom. And, so, I’ve already spent more time talking about Obadiah than it will take to read through Obadiah, but this message isn’t an obsolete message. We who believe are known. At least the Scriptures tell us that we have become the children of God and that we are the family of God, that we are the body of Christ, that He is our Father. And it doesn’t take too much effort to look around and witness brothers and sisters who are at war with one another or who will silently stand by with her arms folded watching their brothers and sisters get completely wiped out in something with a judgmental attitude that they’re getting what they deserve. And here’s the thing, Obadiah will certainly condemn this, but so does the Bible in so many places. And, so, this is not an irrelevant thing that we are about to read, even though it’s a short thing. And let’s take this to heart. In what ways are we looking out at the family of God that we are a part of and just standing by and letting things happen that shouldn’t happen. And with that we’re reading from the Good News Translation this week. Obadiah.

Prayer:

And, so, Father as we come into this brand-new shiny sparkly week and knowing that this happens every week, but also knowing that it doesn’t happen too many more weeks this year because we’re kinda getting down to it, we thank You for what You speak and what have…what You have spoken in the book of Obadiah and how we must inside of our own families, we can just stand back and be estranged, but inside the family of God there’s no place for this. And, so, reveal to us, Holy Spirit, what we must do what’s next. How…how do we live into what You are saying? How do we become Your hands and feet and not our own hands and feet with our own grudges? How do we let go and be Your servants doing what You will and not just trying to achieve our own will? But we also thank You for the Proverbs. It’s dangerous to be concerned with what others think of you. Yeah, so much comes out of that and so much comes out of that this time of year, but the proverb goes on to say, “if You trust the Lord You are safe.” Thank You for that. We embrace that. As we let go we are safe in You. O Holy Spirit come. Challenge us with that. Keep that ever present in our minds as we move forward we ask in the mighty name of Jesus. Amen.

Now if you have a prayer request as well or some type of encouragement to somebody or some kind of prayer for somebody, that’s wonderful, that’s beautiful. Just don’t combine them. Call in your holiday greeting if…if you want and let that be, that standalone, and then you can call in your prayer request or encouragement as a separate thing. That’s not how it’s normally, but that’s how it is around Christmas time. So, you can do that now. We’ll do it for a couple more days and we’ll shut it down as we prepare for our party.

And, so, this is what we thought best, just to let you kind of create your own…your own Christmas box. And normally the Christmas ornament is exclusive in the box but you can make your own box. And you spend $40 or more we’ll send you the ornament.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hey what’s up DAB family this is Micah in Awe in the Kansas City Missouri area. I’ve been hearing this weird noise all morning [jingling noise] What is that? What is that? [jingling noise] Is that Santa’s sleigh bells coming in. No. That’s them keys Jesus is holding. Revelation 1:18. I am the first and the last and the living one and I was dead and behold I am alive forevermore and I have the keys of death and Hades. No matter what’s keeping you locked down, whatever chains are around you Jesus has the key to that. Don’t forget it. Jesus has more keys than a little bit. All the janitor’s keychains in the world and got nothing on Jesus keys. For the rest of your life remember this jangling [jingling noise]. That’s Jesus’ keys. He’s got your answer. I love you DAB family.

Hello Daily Audio Bible this is Sharon in Southern California. It’s been a while since I’ve called. My daughter and I are still not talking. In fact, it’s gotten worse. She had herself committed, dad the kids put in home secure I believe. So, I have no idea where anyone…where anyone is but please keep them in your prayers for their safety for their health for…and possible reconciliation between me and my daughter and my grandchildren. My husband’s drinking has gotten worse. So, I haven’t been really in a mood or state of mind to call. I’ve been listening, I just haven’t…I’ve been depressed, and I guess sad and upset that things aren’t going like I would like them to. It’s been two years since I’ve spoken with my daughter and it’s been a little over a year about my husband’s drinking and I…I just feel overwhelmed and beat down. So, thank you for your prayers. Continue to pray as I do for you guys every day. I love you. Thanks. Bye.

Good morning DAB family this is Shante calling from the treasure Coast of Florida and I am calling in for one of our DAB sisters who is dealing with workplace stress from the customers and from her colleagues as well and from the responsibilities and problems that have been put on her plate to solve. And I just want to encourage you sister. Want to encourage you and I want to remind you that God has your back and these burdens have been placed on you but hand them over to Him and meditate on Philippians chapter 4 verses four through eight. It says to “rejoice in the Lord always. Again, I say rejoice.” And I feel like it starts right there. If we’re constantly rejoicing, even in the midst of our circumstances, especially workplace stress. I’ve made phone calls into the DAB about workplace stress from my previous job over the 10 years that I worked there I called in multiple times about it and I…I know that pressure of having a gazillion responsibilities and…and feeling like you’re not making progress in getting your responsibilities done. And right now, maybe…maybe I’m able to call in this call because I’ve just started a job and I don’t have those type of responsibilities at this moment but it’s coming. And, anyway what got me through that was staying in constant prayer. And I know you’re doing that, but I just want to remind you it’s…it’s not up to you to solve everything. Let…let God do that leg work. Ask him for wisdom constantly. Ask him for peace. You said you didn’t have a lot of peace. And basically that is part of Philippians 4 and 6. You’re gonna get…

Well hello from beautiful Cincinnati Ohio this is Daniel Johnson Junior. How are you? I am calling in today to share a huge praise report. Last year in December 2019 about this…around…right around this time I was in the hospital having been diagnosed with congestive heart failure symptoms. Yesterday I saw a memory come through that I had an echocardiogram done to check my heart function and my heart function was only 13% last year on December the 10th 2019. This has been a tough year for us all myself included. I mean I’m still looking for my next job. Still trying to figure out what’s going on. But one thing that has been huge, and you can probably tell because I’m out walking right now. It’s actually chilly here in beautiful Cincinnati Ohio. It is a balmy 30°F. I am wearing a T-shirt, a thick sweater and then a big thick flannel jacket over…I’m not wearing a hat, I’m not wearing gloves because I’m only about a mile from where I live but I’m enjoying this walk out here and time to spend with God and of course time to spend with you guys too here at the Global Campfire. So, this year in October middle of October I had an echocardiogram done and by ejection fraction is 53%. My 53%, that’s close to normal. So, I praise God for what He’s done this year. So, from beautiful Cincinnati Ohio Daniel Johnson Junior. Make it a great day.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Sunday December 13, 2020 (NIV)

Obadiah

This is the prophecy of Obadiah—what the Sovereign Lord said about the nation of Edom.

The Lord Will Punish Edom

The Lord has sent his messenger to the nations,
and we have heard his message:
“Get ready! Let us go to war against Edom!”
The Lord says to Edom,
“I will make you weak;
everyone will despise you.
Your pride has deceived you.
Your capital is a fortress of solid rock;
your home is high in the mountains,
and so you say to yourself,
‘Who can ever pull me down?’
Even though you make your home
as high as an eagle's nest,
so that it seems to be among the stars,
yet I will pull you down.

“When thieves come at night,
they take only what they want.
When people gather grapes,
they always leave a few.
But your enemies have wiped you out completely.
Descendants of Esau, your treasures have been looted.
Your allies have deceived you;
they have driven you from your country.
People who were at peace with you have now conquered you.
Those friends who ate with you have laid a trap for you;
they say of you, ‘Where is all that cleverness he had?’

“On the day I punish Edom,
I will destroy their clever men
and wipe out all their wisdom.
The fighting men of Teman will be terrified,
and every soldier in Edom will be killed.

Reasons for Edom's Punishment

10 “Because you robbed and killed
your relatives,[a] the descendants of Jacob,
you will be destroyed and dishonored forever.
11 You stood aside on that day
when enemies broke down their gates.
You were as bad as those strangers
who carried off Jerusalem's wealth
and divided it among themselves.
12 You should not have gloated
over the misfortune of your relatives in Judah.
You should not have been glad
on the day of their ruin.
You should not have laughed at them
in their distress.
13 You should not have entered the city of my people
to gloat over their suffering
and to seize their riches
on the day of their disaster.
14 (A)You should not have stood at the crossroads
to catch those trying to escape.
You should not have handed them over to the enemy
on the day of their distress.

God Will Judge the Nations

15 “The day is near when I, the Lord,
will judge all nations.
Edom, what you have done
will be done to you.
You will get back what you have given.
16 My people have drunk a bitter cup of punishment
on my sacred hill.[b]
But all the surrounding nations will drink
a still more bitter cup of punishment;
they will drink it all and vanish away.

The Victory of Israel

17 “But on Mount Zion some will escape,
and it will be a sacred place.
The people of Jacob will possess
the land that is theirs by right.
18 The people of Jacob and of Joseph will be like fire;
they will destroy the people of Esau
as fire burns stubble.
No descendant of Esau will survive.
I, the Lord, have spoken.

19 “People from southern Judah will occupy Edom;
those from the western foothills will capture Philistia.
Israelites will possess the territory of Ephraim and Samaria;
the people of Benjamin will take Gilead.
20 The army of exiles from northern Israel
will return and conquer Phoenicia as far north as Zarephath.
The exiles from Jerusalem who are in Sardis
will capture the towns of southern Judah.
21 The victorious men of Jerusalem
will attack Edom and rule over it.
And the Lord himself will be king.”

  1. Obadiah 1:10 The Israelites were descended from Jacob, who was the brother of Esau, the ancestor of the Edomites.

Revelation 4

Worship in Heaven

At this point I had another vision and saw an open door in heaven.

And the voice that sounded like a trumpet, which I had heard speaking to me before, said, “Come up here, and I will show you what must happen after this.” (A)At once the Spirit took control of me. There in heaven was a throne with someone sitting on it. His face gleamed like such precious stones as jasper and carnelian, and all around the throne there was a rainbow the color of an emerald. In a circle around the throne were twenty-four other thrones, on which were seated twenty-four elders dressed in white and wearing crowns of gold. (B)From the throne came flashes of lightning, rumblings, and peals of thunder. In front of the throne seven lighted torches were burning, which are the seven spirits of God. (C)Also in front of the throne there was what looked like a sea of glass, clear as crystal.

Surrounding the throne on each of its sides, were four living creatures covered with eyes in front and behind. The first one looked like a lion; the second looked like a bull; the third had a face like a human face; and the fourth looked like an eagle in flight. (D)Each one of the four living creatures had six wings, and they were covered with eyes, inside and out. Day and night they never stop singing:

“Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God Almighty,
who was, who is, and who is to come.”

The four living creatures sing songs of glory and honor and thanks to the one who sits on the throne, who lives forever and ever. When they do so, 10 the twenty-four elders fall down before the one who sits on the throne, and worship him who lives forever and ever. They throw their crowns down in front of the throne and say,

11 “Our Lord and God! You are worthy
to receive glory, honor, and power.
For you created all things,
and by your will they were given existence and life.”

Psalm 132

In Praise of the Temple

132 Lord, do not forget David
and all the hardships he endured.
Remember, Lord, what he promised,
the vow he made to you, the Mighty God of Jacob:
“I will not go home or go to bed;
I will not rest or sleep,
until I provide a place for the Lord,
a home for the Mighty God of Jacob.”

(A)In Bethlehem we heard about the Covenant Box,
and we found it in the fields of Jearim.
We said, “Let us go to the Lord's house;
let us worship before his throne.”

Come to the Temple, Lord, with the Covenant Box,
the symbol of your power,
and stay here forever.
May your priests do always what is right;
may your people shout for joy!

10 You made a promise to your servant David;
do not reject your chosen king, Lord.
11 (B)You made a solemn promise to David—
a promise you will not take back:
“I will make one of your sons king,
and he will rule after you.
12 If your sons are true to my covenant
and to the commands I give them,
their sons, also, will succeed you for all time as kings.”

13 The Lord has chosen Zion;
he wants to make it his home:
14 “This is where I will live forever;
this is where I want to rule.
15 I will richly provide Zion with all she needs;
I will satisfy her poor with food.
16 I will bless her priests in all they do,
and her people will sing and shout for joy.
17 (C)Here I will make one of David's descendants a great king;
here I will preserve the rule of my chosen king.
18 I will cover his enemies with shame,

Proverbs 29:24-25

24 A thief's partner is his own worst enemy. He will be punished if he tells the truth in court, and God will curse him if he doesn't.

25 It is dangerous to be concerned with what others think of you, but if you trust the Lord, you are safe.

Amos 7:1-9:15, Revelation 3:7-22, Psalms 131:1-3, Proverbs 29:23

Today is December 12th welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I’m Brian it is great to be here with you today as we bring to a conclusion another week. And we begin our year, and we have 52 of these. And, so, it feels like we have a lot of space and we can spend these weeks but we’re down to two more full weeks left in this year and then some change a few more days after that. So, we don’t have much more of this year to spend. Let’s spend it well. And one way that we spend it well is to keep the rhythm of the Scriptures in our lives each and every day. So, we’ve been reading from the English Standard Version this week, which is what we’ll do today. Amos chapters, 7, 8, ad 9.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word. And another week, another week has gone by and all of the weeks that we get to spend together another one has passed us, and we are grateful. We are thankful because we are here, and we are able to turn our hearts and worship toward You. You have sustained us. We are here and we are grateful for Your gracious kindness, Your patience in our lives. And, so, as we release this week, prepare to move into the new one, come Holy Spirit. We need You now more than ever. We need Your clarity. We need it to be Your words coming from our mouths. And the only way that’s gonna happen is if Your word is within our lives and our hearts. If the convictions of our lives aren’t being shifted and conformed to Your will and Your ways, then nothing we say is gonna be conformed to Your will and Your ways, either. Come, Holy Spirit. We surrender ourselves to You. We pray this in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Announcements:

dailyaudiobible.com is home base, and that is…that’s where you find out what’s happening around here in the Global Campfire community.

And its Christmas time. So, the Christmas things that we normally talk about are what’s going on around here, inviting everyone to call in their holiday greetings for our annual Christmas party, our annual, kind of, virtual get together which we’re looking forward to. So, you can do that now. You can use the hotline that you use to call in prayer…prayer requests and encouragements. And you can use the same phone numbers as well. So, the…a couple rules. One basic rule is, you know, not…normally we don’t have multiple kind of serial calls. This is one of the times where you can call in and hang up and call back because you don’t want to combine a holiday greeting and a prayer request or encouragement in the same call. Call in your holiday greeting and let it be that and then if you have a prayer request or anything else to share call that in separate so that we can keep everything straight and organized. But you can do that now and we’ll continue to do this for a couple more days and then we’ll shut it down before midweek next week. So, don’t procrastinate if he can help it. Go ahead and call in now if you want to.

The other thing is the…the Daily Audio Bible Shop is open and there are…there are some really unique gift ideas in there. The God of your story, we’ve talked about that. The Family Christmas project, we’ve talked about that. The Daily Audio Bible Journal and all of the Black Wing pencil resources that I use to Journal with are in there. The entire Global Campfire line is in there. The things that have not sold out yet are still in there, and there’s plenty left. So, check that out. If you spend $40 or more in the Daily Audio Bible Shop, we will be sure to include the Daily Audio Bible ornament for 2020 along with your order. So, thank you. Thank you for considering the Daily Audio Bible shop. There’s stuff in here that you would…that you would want. Like, there are things in there that you would want and there are things to give away. So, check it out.

If you want to partner with the Daily Audio Bible, you can do that at dailyaudiobible.com as well. There is a link on the homepage, and I thank you, especially this time of year. Thank you, thank you, thank you for your partnership. If you’re using the Daily Audio Bible app you can press the Give button in the upper right-hand corner, or the mailing address is PO Box 1996 Spring Hill Tennessee 37174.

And, as always, if you have a prayer request or encouragement, or holiday greeting you can hit the Hotline button in the app, which is the little red button up at the top or you can dial 877-942-4253.

And that’s it for today, I’m Brian I love you and I’ll be waiting for you here tomorrow.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hey, I’m Ben in Georgia. I’ve been up Daily Audio Bible listener for couple years now and I wanted to reach out and ask for prayer for my wife. She’s just been having a really tough time at her job lately and it’s really discouraging for. I really don’t help. I’m…I’m trying to comfort her and help her look for other jobs but it’s just tough. If you would, please pray that either this job will get better or she would find a better job sometime soon. And also, her knees have just been really troubling her. She’s had surgeries in the past and some of those issues are coming back and causing her pain. So, she has some appointments set up and I’m praying that she gets good results from that but please just pray for healing for her. Thank you so much for all the encouragement that…that you offer every day and for this wonderful community that…that I see going on. Thank you so much.

Good morning Daily Audio Bible, Brian in the Hardin family. First of all, I want to say thank you for such wonderful and great broadcast. My name is David Benedict. I want to say thank you and continue to keep us in your prayer. The Benedict family, the Peocree family, __ Tocson family, and the Powell family. It has been a remarkable year for us due to the loss of our family members and the coronavirus. I just want to thank God that He still has us…us in His hands, in His care, in His love, in His bosom. Continue on praying for us you all. Thank you very much.

Hey, Brian I’m blind and I super appreciate like your podcast. And I wonder if you thought that it would reach people that couldn’t read…read the Bible every day. But, anyway, I just want to let you know that I super appreciate it and…and I mean I can’t read a Bible. I don’t know where else I would find someone who would read me the Bible every morning and I need that. So, much thanks. Your podcast is awesome. Thank you. Bye.

Hey DAB this is White As Snow from Tennessee and I was just calling to thank Christy from Ohio who called in and prayed for truck drivers. And you were talking about driving through a storm in Ohio last week. And I was in that snowstorm driving up through Cleveland towards Buffalo New York and I counted 19 cars and 4 trucks that had run off the road. I’m thankful I made it through okay. But I just wanted to thank you for praying for me and the other truckers out there and everyone in the DAB who prays for us drivers. It’s just a great comfort knowing that you’re thinking about us. And Christy I just want to let you know am praying for you and your family as you remember the loss of your sister who died last year and just praying for God’s peace and continued healing. And also, for your dad whose friend has cancer and the coworker whose dad has died and just praying that your dad will be able to just comfort both of them and just be a good friend for…for them. And thanks so much for calling.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Saturday December 12, 2020 (NIV)

Amos 7-9

Warning Visions

(A)This is what the Lord God showed me: behold, (B)he was forming locusts when the latter growth was just beginning to sprout, and behold, it was the latter growth after the king's mowings. When they had finished eating the grass of the land, I said,

“O Lord God, please forgive!
(C)How can Jacob stand?
He is so small!”
(D)The Lord relented concerning this:
“It shall not be,” said the Lord.

(E)This is what the Lord God showed me: behold, the Lord God was calling (F)for a judgment by fire, and it devoured the great deep and was eating up the land. Then I said,

“O Lord God, please cease!
(G)How can Jacob stand?
He is so small!”
(H)The Lord relented concerning this:
“This also shall not be,” said the Lord God.

(I)This is what he showed me: behold, the Lord was standing beside a wall built with (J)a plumb line, with a plumb line in his hand. And the Lord said to me, (K)“Amos, what do you see?” And I said, “A plumb line.” Then the Lord said,

“Behold, I am setting (L)a plumb line
in the midst of my people Israel;
(M)I will never again pass by them;
(N)the high places of Isaac shall be made desolate,
and the sanctuaries of Israel shall be laid waste,
and I will rise against (O)the house of Jeroboam with the sword.”

Amos Accused

10 Then Amaziah (P)the priest of Bethel sent to (Q)Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, “Amos has (R)conspired against you in the midst of the house of Israel. The land is not able to bear all his words. 11 For thus Amos has said,

“‘Jeroboam shall die by the sword,
and (S)Israel must go into exile
away from his land.’”

12 And Amaziah said to Amos, (T)“O seer, go, flee away (U)to the land of Judah, and (V)eat bread there, and prophesy there, 13 but (W)never again prophesy at Bethel, for (X)it is the king's sanctuary, and it is a temple of the kingdom.”

14 Then Amos answered and said to Amaziah, (Y)“I was[a] no prophet, nor a prophet's son, but (Z)I was a herdsman and a dresser of sycamore figs. 15 (AA)But the Lord took me from following the flock, and the Lord said to me, ‘Go, prophesy to my people Israel.’ 16 (AB)Now therefore hear the word of the Lord.

“You say, (AC)‘Do not prophesy against Israel,
and (AD)do not preach against the house of (AE)Isaac.’

17 (AF)Therefore thus says the Lord:

“‘Your wife shall be a prostitute in the city,
and your sons and your daughters shall fall by the sword,
and your land (AG)shall be divided up with a measuring line;
you yourself shall die in an unclean land,
and (AH)Israel shall surely go into exile away from its land.’”

The Coming Day of Bitter Mourning

(AI)This is what the Lord God showed me: behold, a basket of summer fruit. And he said, (AJ)“Amos, what do you see?” And I said, (AK)“A basket of summer fruit.” Then the Lord said to me,

(AL)“The end[b] has come upon my people Israel;
I will never again pass by them.
(AM)The songs of the temple[c] (AN)shall become wailings[d] in that day,”
declares the Lord God.
(AO)“So many dead bodies!”
“They are thrown everywhere!”
(AP)“Silence!”

Hear this, (AQ)you who trample on the needy
and bring the poor of the land to an end,
saying, “When will (AR)the new moon be over,
that we may sell grain?
And (AS)the Sabbath,
that we may offer wheat for sale,
that we may make (AT)the ephah small and the shekel[e] great
and deal deceitfully with false balances,
that we may buy the poor for (AU)silver
and the needy for a pair of sandals
and sell the chaff of the wheat?”

The Lord has sworn by (AV)the pride of Jacob:
“Surely (AW)I will never forget any of their deeds.
(AX)Shall not the land tremble on this account,
and everyone mourn who dwells in it,
(AY)and all of it rise like the Nile,
and be tossed about (AZ)and sink again, like the Nile of Egypt?”

“And on that day,” declares the Lord God,
(BA)“I will make the sun go down at noon
and darken the earth in broad daylight.
10 (BB)I will turn your feasts into mourning
and all your songs into lamentation;
(BC)I will bring sackcloth on every waist
(BD)and baldness on every head;
(BE)I will make it like the mourning for an only son
and the end of it like a bitter day.

11 “Behold, the days are coming,” declares the Lord God,
“when (BF)I will send a famine on the land—
not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water,
(BG)but of hearing the words of the Lord.
12 (BH)They shall wander from sea to sea,
and from north to east;
they shall run to and fro, to seek the word of the Lord,
(BI)but they shall not find it.

13 (BJ)“In that day the lovely virgins and the young men
shall (BK)faint for thirst.
14 Those who swear by (BL)the Guilt of Samaria,
and say, ‘As your god lives, O Dan,’
and, ‘As (BM)the Way of (BN)Beersheba lives,’
they shall fall, and never rise again.”

The Destruction of Israel

I saw the Lord standing beside[f] the altar, and he said:

(BO)“Strike the capitals until (BP)the thresholds (BQ)shake,
(BR)and shatter them on the heads of all the people;[g]
and those who are left of them I will kill with the sword;
(BS)not one of them shall flee away;
not one of them shall escape.

(BT)“If they dig into Sheol,
from there shall my hand take them;
(BU)if they climb up to heaven,
from there I will bring them down.
If they hide themselves on (BV)the top of Carmel,
from there I will search them out and take them;
(BW)and if they hide from my sight at the bottom of the sea,
there I will command the serpent, and it shall bite them.
(BX)And if they go into captivity before their enemies,
there I will command the sword, and it shall kill them;
(BY)and I will fix my eyes upon them
for evil and not for good.”

The Lord God of hosts,
he who touches the earth and (BZ)it melts,
and all who dwell in it mourn,
(CA)and all of it rises like the Nile,
(CB)and sinks again, like the Nile of Egypt;
(CC)who builds his upper chambers in the heavens
and founds his vault upon the earth;
(CD)who calls for the waters of the sea
and pours them out upon the surface of the earth—
(CE)the Lord is his name.

“Are you not like (CF)the Cushites to me,
O people of Israel?” declares the Lord.
(CG)“Did I not bring up Israel from the land of Egypt,
and (CH)the Philistines from (CI)Caphtor and the Syrians from (CJ)Kir?
Behold, (CK)the eyes of the Lord God are upon the sinful kingdom,
and I will destroy it from the surface of the ground,
(CL)except that I will not utterly destroy the house of Jacob,”
declares the Lord.

“For behold, I will command,
(CM)and shake the house of Israel among all the nations
as one shakes with a sieve,
but no pebble shall fall to the earth.
10 All the sinners of my people shall die by the sword,
who say, (CN)‘Disaster shall not overtake or meet us.’

The Restoration of Israel

11 “In that day (CO)I will raise up
the booth of David that is fallen
and repair its breaches,
and raise up its ruins
and rebuild it as in the days of old,
12 (CP)that they may possess the remnant of Edom
and (CQ)all the nations who are called by my name,”[h]
declares the Lord who does this.

13 “Behold, the days are coming,” declares the Lord,
(CR)“when the plowman shall overtake the reaper
and the treader of grapes him who sows the seed;
(CS)the mountains shall drip sweet wine,
and all the hills shall flow with it.
14 (CT)I will restore the fortunes of my people Israel,
and (CU)they shall rebuild the ruined cities and inhabit them;
(CV)they shall plant vineyards and drink their wine,
and they shall make gardens and eat their fruit.
15 (CW)I will plant them on their land,
(CX)and they shall never again be uprooted
out of the land (CY)that I have given them,”
says the Lord your God.

Revelation 3:7-22

To the Church in Philadelphia

“And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write: ‘The words of (A)the holy one, (B)the true one, (C)who has the key of David, (D)who opens and no one will shut, who shuts and no one opens.

“‘I know your works. Behold, I have set before you (E)an open door, which no one is able to shut. I know that you have but little power, and yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name. Behold, I will make those of (F)the synagogue of Satan who say that they are Jews and are not, but lie—behold, (G)I will make them come and bow down before your feet, and they will learn that (H)I have loved you. 10 (I)Because you have kept my word about patient endurance, I will keep you from the hour of trial that is coming on the whole world, to try (J)those who dwell on the earth. 11 (K)I am coming soon. (L)Hold fast what you have, so that no one may seize (M)your crown. 12 (N)The one who conquers, I will make him (O)a pillar in the temple of my God. Never shall he go out of it, and I will write on him (P)the name of my God, and (Q)the name of the city of my God, (R)the new Jerusalem, (S)which comes down from my God out of heaven, and my own (T)new name. 13 (U)He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’

To the Church in Laodicea

14 “And to the angel of the church in Laodicea write: ‘The words of the (V)Amen, (W)the faithful and true witness, (X)the beginning of God's creation.

15 “‘I know your works: you are neither cold nor hot. (Y)Would that you were either cold or hot! 16 So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth. 17 (Z)For you say, I am rich, I have prospered, and I need nothing, not realizing that you are wretched, pitiable, poor, (AA)blind, and naked. 18 I counsel you (AB)to buy from me gold refined by fire, so that you may be rich, and (AC)white garments so that you may clothe yourself and (AD)the shame of your nakedness may not be seen, and salve to anoint your eyes, (AE)so that you may see. 19 (AF)Those whom I love, I reprove and discipline, so be zealous and repent. 20 Behold, I stand at the door and (AG)knock. (AH)If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, (AI)I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me. 21 (AJ)The one who conquers, (AK)I will grant him to sit with me on my throne, as (AL)I also conquered and sat down with my Father on his throne. 22 (AM)He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’”

Psalm 131

I Have Calmed and Quieted My Soul

A Song of (A)Ascents. Of David.

131 O Lord, my heart is not (B)lifted up;
my eyes are not (C)raised too high;
I do not (D)occupy myself with things
too great and (E)too marvelous for me.
But I have calmed and quieted my soul,
like a weaned (F)child with its mother;
like a weaned child is my soul within me.

(G)O Israel, hope in the Lord
from this time forth and forevermore.

Amos 4:1-6:14, Revelation 2:18-3:6, Psalms 130:1-8, Proverbs 29:21-22

Today is the 11th day of December welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I’m Brian it’s great to be here with you today like it’s great to be here with you any day, any day at all - spring, summer, winter, fall - anytime at all. It’s great to be here with you. Wait, that sounds, that sounds remarkably like lyrics I know - spring, summer, winter, fall, all you have to do is call and I’ll be there. You’ve got of friend. So, friends, let’s gather together here around the Global Campfire and take the next step forward in the Scriptures. And this is one day where we…we don’t have to move into new territory. Most of the days we do have to move into new territory because of the territory that we’re in in the Scriptures, but today we don’t have to enter into a new book. So, we’re reading from the English Standard Version this week. Amos chapters 4, 5, and 6.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word. We thank You for the next step forward that we get to take every day and that it reminds us of Your presence in our lives and of Your constant transformation in our soul. And, so, we take to heart what we just read, the last thing, the last thing blinking there before us as we concluded our reading today. “A man of wrath stirs up strife and one given to anger causes much transgression.” We know this is true. We can affirmatively shake our heads, but if we slow down enough, we know that this is giving us advance words for the season that we are in and all of the festivities that are around us. We need to remember this and not be a man or woman of wrath and not be one given to anger unless stirring up strife and causing transgression is the goal, which it’s not. The goal is to be Your hands and Your feet and to minister Your love into this world, especially in this season because we are known by our love. So, come Holy Spirit, plant the words of Proverbs into our hearts that we might carry it forward and that it might shape the way we behave. Come Holy Spirit we pray. In the mighty name of Jesus, we ask. Amen.

Announcements:

dailyaudiobible.com is home base, it’s the website, it’s where you find out what’s going on around here.

It’s Christmas time. That is what’s going on in the world so that’s what’s going on around here as well. And what a joy it is to just continue to move through the Advent season, just to sense that longing, that longing that we feel. This is the season to acknowledge that longing because it’s kind always underneath it all isn’t it? We are often…we turn that longing into what material possession or what type of scenario can I arrange for that will make that longing go away? Like, how can I fill that void? When it’s way deeper than that. We’re just running at a pace that we never slow down enough to give any attention to it. That longing is the deepest cry of our soul, that all things would indeed be made new again. And we long for that. We long for the Advent of Jesus, right? The Arrival or this would be called, the second Advent, like a second arrival. But at the same time because it’s Christmas season and this is the season to pay attention to that, we put ourselves in the position of the people who were waiting for the Advent of the Savior, who were waiting for Christmas even though they didn’t call it Christmas, who were waiting for Him to come because they had the longing in their soul too and there was a promise that He would come. And he did come. But we have that longing. Advent lets us tune into it as we wait and consider that in our souls as we move to Christmas where then with joy, we celebrate the arrival while still longing for the second arrival. So, it’s a joy to spend that season together. And all things that are happening are Christmas related.

So, it’s like we’re putting together our holiday Christmas party, our annual holiday gathering. It’s virtual. It’ll just show up as another program just like the community prayers do in a couple weeks, but we’re gathering all of the calls. So, you can use the Hotline button, or you can dial 877-942-4253. And those are, you know, those are the numbers that you…or that’s how you would submit a prayer request or encouragement. Right now, also a holiday greeting. The one rule that I’ve been talking about is “don’t combine”. Don’t combine a prayer request or an encouragement with a holiday greeting. Just call in your holiday greeting and then if you have a prayer request or encouragement call that in separately. It’s one of the special times of year you can do that. And, so, yeah, don’t be left out. Trust me. Every year lots and lots of people procrastinate and then it’s too late. Don’t be that person this year. Call in and share your holiday wishes with the community as…that we’ve been to each other all year as we’ve gone through the Bible.

The other thing is the Daily Audio Bible Shop is full of resources that make for unique gifts. And…like the God of Your Story, which is the written dated January 1st through December 31st devotional, essentially. I don’t really like that word because I think that what we’re doing here is way more than devotions, but in written form it is the gold that is the things that we talk about, the themes that we talk about as we go through the Bible each and every day. So, it is a perfect companion resource…in fact it was made to be “the” perfect companion resource to the Daily Audio Bible just to take the journey deeper. Maybe we listen to the DAB and then read that at night and it just kind of sows the themes in the stories that we are in deeper into our lives or if we’re out of…we’re like will gonna go off the grid on some type of holiday and we’re gonna be out of touch, this lets us stay right in step with the things that we are reading, but it’s also a fantastic resource for anyone who wants to read through the Bible in a year and needs a friend to guide the way, to point out some of the beautiful things, the vistas that we get to see when we travel through the Bible together. So, the God of Your Story is available. The family Christmas record is available as well. You can get a physical copy in the Daily Audio Bible Shop, but you can stream it on Apple music or Spotify or Google play or wherever you can stream music. Just look for Family Christmas and maybe my name and you’ll find it. That is the soundtrack for the community, that’s the soundtrack to the holiday season. It's…it’s something that I created over a couple of years and it’s really meant to be that hot cocoa moment where you shut off everything in your house and you just got the Christmas lights on and just trying to find the Spirit of Christmas in the silence and just catch a breather in the festivities of it all, this is the soundtrack for that. So, check it out at. There are plenty of resources in the Daily Audio Bible Shop. If you spend $40 or more in the shop this season, we will include in your order the Daily Audio Bible Christmas ornament for 2020. We have one each year. We have for the last seven years. And, so, we have that this year as well. And you get it with your purchase of $40 or more in the Shop.

If you want to partner with the Daily Audio Bible, you do that dailyaudiobible.com as well. There is a link on the homepage and I’m humbled…humbled to know that so many have clicked that link. And that is why we’re here or if you’re using the Daily Audio Bible app you can press the Give button in the upper right-hand corner. And I’m humbled. Like, that’s not a joke. I’m humbled that…that that link would be clicked and that we would continue on and…as a community together. I thank you for your partnership. Or, if you prefer, the mailing address is PO Box 1996 Spring Hill Tennessee 37174.

And, as always, if you have a prayer request or encouragement, or holiday greeting right now you can hit the Hotline button in the app, the little red button up at the top, can’t miss it, or you can dial 877-942-4253.

And that’s it for today. I’m Brian I love you and I’ll be waiting for you here tomorrow.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Good morning this message is for little Halo. This is Grandpa Bob from Michigan. Oh, sweetheart I heard your prayer and your cry out for help to deal with this person who’s being evil toward you and perhaps others. Honey just start off by praying for this person. They need God in their heart. They don’t have a mother who loves them perhaps or teaches them God’s way. But the sound of your voice, sweet innocent child, God loves you so much and He will give you the strength to deal with this person. I want you to know that you sound just like my grandbabies and that I love you. I want the best for you. And because you reached out God is going to help you deal with this person. He loves you. He loves you. You know what, and so do we. Call in again. Call in again. You are loved. Bye-bye.

Hello, I was just calling for prayer about… I feel so distracted with things that are going on in the world and so much of makes me sick and I try to keep listening to the Bible and I do but I have to keep reminding…like…keep staying focused on what I’m listening to and I try to read and it’s just everything is…it’s really hard to stay hopeful. And I just…no matter how hard I try to focus on God…it just…I don’t I don’t feel close. It’s just really hard. It just makes me feel sick, physically sick to my stomach. So, thank you for your prayers.

Dear Daily Audio Bible family it’s Faithful Hope in the UK and I’m calling this time to ask you to join me in prayer. I have mentioned previously that I’m in a nasty court case with regards to my children. And yeah. It’s nothing new. It’s been going on for several years. Anyway, you guys have been praying and I’ve felt that and thank you to everyone who’s joined me in prayer so far. But today I’ve just literally sent my ex-husband an email, asking him and his wife and his mother and even his church fellowship to consider having seven days of prayer and fasting…well…prayer and fasting for me and him and prayer from the others bringing this matter before the Lord because there’s no need for this acrimony. Obviously, it will only work if were humble and repentant and all of us who have been involved in this situation are humble and repentant of any harm we’ve inflicted on the other. So, I do ask you Daily Audio Bible family. I pray that…to pray that he’ll be able to respond to that positively, that he will join in this prayer and at the end of the seven days we will have a real praise report going forward. So, yeah. So, let’s just pray. Lord I do thank You Lord that You bring a peace that is beyond all measure that is hard to fathom Lord. And Lord I just pray that You would bring Your peace into the situation. Lord I pray that Steve and Jill would be willing to commit to this time in Jesus’ name. Amen.

[singing starts] He’s got the whole world in His hands. He’s got the whole world in His hands. He’s got the whole world in His hands. He’s got the whole world in His hands. He’s got my brothers and my sisters in His hands. He’s got my brothers and my sisters in His hands. He’s got my brothers and sisters in His hands. He’s got the whole world in His hands. He’s got the sun and the rain in His hands. He’s got the moon and the stars in His hands. He’s got the wind and the clouds in His hands. He’s got the whole world in His hands. He’s got the rivers and the mountains in His hands. He’s got the oceans and the seas in His hands. He’s got…He got…He’s got…He’s got me…and my…He’s got you and He’s got me in has hands. He’s got the whole world in His hands. He’s got everybody here in His hands. He’s got everybody there in His hands. He’s got everybody everywhere in His hands. He’s got the whole world in His hands. He’s got the whole world in His hands. He’s got the whole world in His hands. Dum pum. [singing stops] I’m His grace He shines. Loving you Daily Audio Bible family and praying…

Hello DABber family this is Walta the Burning Bush that will not be Devoured for the Glory of our God and our King. I just heard the sweetest call from Halo I think that’s your name and your mom inspired you to listen to the DAB and you called in praying for yourself. Hatred, you mentioned the word and you…you talked about someone in school that’s just being mean. And, so, I want you to know I prayed for you. And Father God I praise You for this girl and I thank You for Your love for You and her love for Your word and I pray that You will put a shield of protection around her as she goes to school. Help her to see these kids through Your eyes and Lord I pray that You will use her to bring them closer to You O God. And I pray O God that You stop them. Give her favor. Give them just the desire to get to know her and to be nice the next time they see her Father. I know that You’re able to work miracles. And Father God, thank You for all the kids listening God and all the parents O God in raising their kids Lord. Teach us O Lord to number our days. In Jesus’ name. Amen. And Candace from Oregon, I heard your praise report for Micah. I’m praising God for you. Have a wonderful, wonderful Christmas if I don’t see you guys or talk to you soon. Bye-bye.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Friday December 11, 2020 (NIV)

Amos 4-6

“Hear this word, (A)you cows of Bashan,
who are (B)on the mountain of Samaria,
(C)who oppress the poor, (D)who crush the needy,
who say to your husbands, ‘Bring, that we may drink!’
(E)The Lord God has sworn by his holiness
that, behold, the days are coming upon you,
(F)when they shall take you away with hooks,
(G)even the last of you with fishhooks.
(H)And you shall go out through the breaches,
each one straight ahead;
and you shall be cast out into Harmon,”
declares the Lord.

(I)“Come to Bethel, and transgress;
to (J)Gilgal, and multiply transgression;
(K)bring your (L)sacrifices every morning,
your tithes every three days;
offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving of (M)that which is leavened,
and proclaim (N)freewill offerings, publish them;
(O)for so you love to do, O people of Israel!”
declares the Lord God.

Israel Has Not Returned to the Lord

“I gave you cleanness of teeth in all your cities,
and (P)lack of bread in all your places,
(Q)yet you did not return to me,”
declares the Lord.

“I also (R)withheld the rain from you
when there were yet three months to the harvest;
(S)I would send rain on one city,
and send no rain on another city;
one field would have rain,
and the field on which it did not rain would wither;
so two or three cities (T)would wander to another city
to drink water, and would not be satisfied;
(U)yet you did not return to me,”
declares the Lord.

(V)“I struck you with blight and mildew;
your many gardens and your vineyards,
your fig trees and your olive trees (W)the locust devoured;
(X)yet you did not return to me,”
declares the Lord.

10 “I sent among you a pestilence (Y)after the manner of Egypt;
I killed your young men with the sword,
and (Z)carried away your horses,[a]
and (AA)I made the stench of your camp go up into your nostrils;
(AB)yet you did not return to me,”
declares the Lord.

11 “I overthrew some of you,
(AC)as when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah,
and you were (AD)as a brand[b] plucked out of the burning;
(AE)yet you did not return to me,”
declares the Lord.

12 “Therefore thus I will do to you, O Israel;
because I will do this to you,
prepare to meet your God, O Israel!”

13 For behold, (AF)he who forms the mountains and creates the wind,
and (AG)declares to man what is his thought,
(AH)who makes the morning darkness,
and (AI)treads on the heights of the earth—
(AJ)the Lord, the God of hosts, is his name!

Seek the Lord and Live

Hear this word that I (AK)take up over you in lamentation, O house of Israel:

“Fallen, no more to rise,
is (AL)the virgin Israel;
forsaken on her land,
with none to raise her up.”

For thus says the Lord God:

“The city that went out a thousand
shall have a hundred left,
and that which went out a hundred
shall have ten left
to the house of Israel.”

For thus says the Lord to the house of Israel:

(AM)“Seek me and live;
but do not seek (AN)Bethel,
and do not enter into (AO)Gilgal
or cross over to (AP)Beersheba;
for (AQ)Gilgal shall surely go into exile,
and (AR)Bethel shall come to nothing.”

(AS)Seek the Lord and live,
(AT)lest he break out like fire in the house of Joseph,
and it devour, with none to quench it for (AU)Bethel,
O (AV)you who turn justice to wormwood[c]
and cast down righteousness to the earth!

He who made the (AW)Pleiades and Orion,
and turns deep darkness into the morning
and (AX)darkens the day into night,
who (AY)calls for the waters of the sea
(AZ)and pours them out on the surface of the earth,
(BA)the Lord is his name;
(BB)who makes destruction flash forth against the strong,
so that destruction comes upon the fortress.

10 (BC)They hate him who reproves (BD)in the gate,
and they (BE)abhor him who speaks the truth.
11 Therefore because you (BF)trample on[d] the poor
and you exact taxes of grain from him,
(BG)you have built houses of hewn stone,
but you shall not dwell in them;
(BH)you have planted pleasant vineyards,
but you shall not drink their wine.
12 For I know how many are your transgressions
and how great are your sins—
you who afflict the righteous, who (BI)take a bribe,
and (BJ)turn aside the needy (BK)in the gate.
13 Therefore he who is prudent will (BL)keep silent in such a time,
(BM)for it is an evil time.

14 (BN)Seek good, and not evil,
that you may live;
and so the Lord, (BO)the God of hosts, will be with you,
as you have said.
15 (BP)Hate evil, and love good,
and establish justice (BQ)in the gate;
(BR)it may be that the Lord, the God of hosts,
will be gracious to the remnant of Joseph.

16 Therefore thus says the Lord, (BS)the God of hosts, the Lord:

“In all the squares (BT)there shall be wailing,
and in all the streets they shall say, ‘Alas! Alas!’
They shall call the farmers to mourning
and (BU)to wailing those who are skilled in lamentation,
17 and in all vineyards there shall be wailing,
for (BV)I will pass through your midst,”
says the Lord.

Let Justice Roll Down

18 Woe to you who desire (BW)the day of the Lord!
Why would you have the day of the Lord?
(BX)It is darkness, and not light,
19 (BY)as if a man fled from a lion,
and a bear met him,
or went into the house and leaned his hand against the wall,
and a serpent bit him.
20 (BZ)Is not the day of the Lord darkness, and not light,
and gloom with no brightness in it?

21 (CA)“I hate, I despise your feasts,
and I take no delight in your solemn assemblies.
22 (CB)Even though you offer me your burnt offerings and grain offerings,
I will not accept them;
and the peace offerings of your fattened animals,
I will not look upon them.
23 Take away from me the noise of your songs;
to (CC)the melody of your harps I will not listen.
24 But let justice roll down like waters,
and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.

25 (CD)“Did you bring to me sacrifices and offerings during the forty years in the wilderness, O house of Israel? 26 (CE)You (CF)shall take up Sikkuth your king, and Kiyyun your star-god—your images that you made for yourselves, 27 (CG)and I will send you into exile beyond Damascus,” says the Lord, whose name is (CH)the God of hosts.

Woe to Those at Ease in Zion

(CI)“Woe to those who are at ease in Zion,
and to those who feel secure on (CJ)the mountain of Samaria,
(CK)the notable men of (CL)the first of the nations,
to whom the house of Israel comes!
Pass over to (CM)Calneh, and see,
and from there go to (CN)Hamath the great;
then go down to (CO)Gath of the Philistines.
(CP)Are you better than these kingdoms?
Or is their territory greater than your territory,
(CQ)O you who put far away the day of disaster
(CR)and bring near the seat of violence?

“Woe to those (CS)who lie on (CT)beds of ivory
(CU)and stretch themselves out on their couches,
and eat lambs from the flock
(CV)and calves from the midst of the stall,
(CW)who sing idle songs to the sound of the harp
and like David (CX)invent for themselves instruments of music,
(CY)who drink wine in bowls
and (CZ)anoint themselves with the finest oils,
but are not grieved over the ruin of Joseph!
(DA)Therefore they shall now be the first of those who go into exile,
and the revelry of those who stretch themselves out shall pass away.”

(DB)The Lord God has sworn by himself, declares the Lord, the God of hosts:

“I abhor (DC)the pride of Jacob
and hate his strongholds,
(DD)and I will deliver up the city and all that is in it.”

And (DE)if ten men remain in one house, they shall die. 10 And when one's relative, (DF)the one who anoints him for burial, shall take him up to bring the bones out of the house, and shall say to him who is in the innermost parts of the house, “Is there still anyone with you?” he shall say, “No”; and he shall say, (DG)“Silence! We must not mention the name of the Lord.”

11 For behold, the Lord commands,
and (DH)the great house shall be struck down into fragments,
and the little house into bits.
12 Do horses run on rocks?
Does one plow there[e] with oxen?
(DI)But you have turned justice into (DJ)poison
(DK)and the fruit of righteousness into wormwood[f]
13 you who rejoice in Lo-debar,[g]
who say, (DL)“Have we not by our own strength
captured Karnaim[h] for ourselves?”
14 “For behold, (DM)I will raise up against you a nation,
O house of Israel,” declares the Lord, the God of hosts;
“and they shall oppress you from (DN)Lebo-hamath
to the Brook of (DO)the Arabah.”

Revelation 2:18-3:6

To the Church in Thyatira

18 “And to the angel of the church in Thyatira write: ‘The words of the Son of God, (A)who has eyes like a flame of fire, and whose feet are like burnished bronze.

19 (B)“‘I know your works, your love and faith and service and patient endurance, and that your latter works exceed the first. 20 But I have this against you, that you tolerate that woman (C)Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess and is teaching and seducing my servants (D)to practice sexual immorality and (E)to eat food sacrificed to idols. 21 I gave her time to repent, but (F)she refuses to repent of her sexual immorality. 22 Behold, I will throw her onto a sickbed, and those who commit adultery with her I will throw into great tribulation, unless they repent of her works, 23 and I will strike her children dead. And all the churches will know that I am he (G)who searches mind and heart, and (H)I will give to each of you according to your works. 24 But to the rest of you in Thyatira, who do not hold this teaching, who have not learned what some call (I)the deep things of Satan, to you I say, I (J)do not lay on you any other burden. 25 Only hold fast (K)what you have until I come. 26 (L)The one who conquers and who keeps my works (M)until the end, (N)to him I will give authority over the nations, 27 and (O)he will (P)rule[a] them with a rod of iron, (Q)as when earthen pots are broken in pieces, even as I myself have received authority from my Father. 28 And I will give him (R)the morning star. 29 (S)He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’

To the Church in Sardis

“And to the angel of the church in Sardis write: ‘The words of him (T)who has the seven spirits of God and the seven stars.

“‘I know your works. You have the reputation (U)of being alive, (V)but you are dead. Wake up, and strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have not found your works (W)complete in the sight of my God. (X)Remember, then, what you received and heard. Keep it, and repent. If you will not wake up, (Y)I will come (Z)like a thief, and you will not know at what hour I will come against you. Yet you have still a few names in Sardis, people who have not (AA)soiled their garments, and they will walk with me (AB)in white, for they are (AC)worthy. (AD)The one who conquers will be clothed thus in white garments, and I will never (AE)blot his name out of (AF)the book of life. (AG)I will confess his name before my Father and before his angels. (AH)He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’

Psalm 130

My Soul Waits for the Lord

A Song of (A)Ascents.

130 Out of (B)the depths I cry to you, O Lord!
O Lord, hear my voice!
(C)Let your ears be attentive
to (D)the voice of my pleas for mercy!

If you, O Lord, should (E)mark iniquities,
O Lord, who could (F)stand?
But with you there is (G)forgiveness,
(H)that you may be feared.

I (I)wait for the Lord, (J)my soul waits,
and (K)in his word I hope;
my soul (L)waits for the Lord
more than (M)watchmen for (N)the morning,
more than watchmen for the morning.

O Israel, (O)hope in the Lord!
For (P)with the Lord there is steadfast love,
and with him is plentiful redemption.
And he will (Q)redeem Israel
from all his iniquities.

Amos 1:1-3:15, Revelation 2:1-17, Psalms 129:1-8, Proverbs 29:19-20

Today is the 10th day of December welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I’m Brian it is wonderful to be here with you today as we continue to take the next steps forward. Right now, we are…it’s like we’re encountering almost a new book every day. And that…that trend will continue a lot of the days in the remaining days of this year. We have landed and in the last book in the New Testament, which is the book of Revelation, but we will be continuing a rapid pace through the minor prophets in the Old Testament, today being no different. We got a brand-new book to launch into. This one is called Amos

Introduction to the book of Amos:

And Amos is interesting because it…it’s likely the earliest written prophecy in the Bible. Amos did his prophetic work in the mid-eighth century B.C. and this happened to be a time where this is after the divided kingdom, so there is a northern…a northern kingdom of Israel and southern kingdom of Judah, but they are experiencing peace and prosperity. Things are going pretty well. And Amos wasn’t like a trained prophet or a trained priest or trained for religious orders in any way that we can tell. He seems like he was ordinary, ordinary life, was a shepherd, maybe a farmer. And it’s not clear whether he was like a landowner of the farm or of the flock or of the vineyard. It is pretty clear that he had some education and that he was aware of what was going on around him. He lived in the city of Tekoa and that is about 10 miles south of Jerusalem. So, that places his home anyway in the southern kingdom of Judah, but his mission, at least his prophetic mission was in the northern kingdom of Israel. So, probably just across the border, which wouldn’t have been terribly far, maybe 20 miles, just across the border into the northern kingdom of the city of Bethel. And Bethel was this huge hub for…well…for idolatry. One of the main temples in the northern kingdom was at Bethel and the other one was at Dan in the north, but also a hub for trade and commerce. It’s not the first time in the Bible that we would see somebody crossing the border into the northern kingdom into Bethel and giving a prophetic utterance. So, that’s a pretty likely scenario for what Amos was doing when he was prophesying. But like I was saying, the northern kingdom of Israel and the southern kingdom of Judah, they were at peace with each other. They were experiencing prosperity, the kind of prosperity that they hadn’t seen since the days of King Solomon. So, it would seem a little odd God would send an ordinary person with no real pedigree that we can tell to deliver a severe message of impending judgment. But this is what Amos was instructed to do. And the irony is, this is a text that is nearly 3000 years old, nearly 3 millennia since this prophecy and yet in many ways it feels contemporary. Basically, the peace and prosperity that the people were experiencing had cracked open the door for corruption and corruption was running rampant. The…the poor are being marginalized, were being taken advantage of, were being oppressed, greed was ruling the hearts of…of the leadership. And Amos comes in and exposes this and denounces this in the name of the Lord, denounces the praying upon the most vulnerable, the least fortunate, which makes the concept of loving your neighbor as yourself very front and center, making the idea, the governmental idea of social justice a major theme in this book while showing us that we don’t have nearly what we think we have figured out actually figured out in this world. We know way, way less than we think we do, and God is way more powerful and more sovereign over all things and all people then we acknowledge or are usually even aware of. And, so, let’s dive in. We’re reading from the English Standard Version this week. Amos chapters 1 through 3.

Prayer:

Father we thank You for Your word. We thank You for Your kindness and Your graciousness, that You walk us through the Scriptures, that You walk us through life, that You shepherd us, that You Father us. We are so grateful. So, as we continue this journey and as we continue to encounter all kinds of new territory here at the end, we’re asking for what we’ve asked for from the beginning - eyes to see and ears to hear - but we’re also just asking that You guide us, guide us to what it is we need to hear, we need to focus on, what it…what it is we need to meditate upon, and guide us through this season as things continue to get more and more busy. And thank You, thank You for that spark of joy that just…just comes through, no matter what’s going on in the world, just comes through this time of year. We can feel it in the back of our minds and the depths of our souls – joy, joy as we contemplate and meditate in this season of Advent on Your arrival, joy to the world. And may that joy continue to bubble forth within our heart and percolate and begin to spill out of us so that we, at this time of year, are joyous in our salvation. Come Holy Spirit into this we pray. In the name of Jesus, we ask. Amen.

Announcements:

dailyaudiobible.com, yeah, that’s home base and it’s where you find out what’s going on around here.

And it’s Christmas time around here. I’ve been saying that I guess for the last week or…well…probably more than a week, I don’t know…since like the day after Thanksgiving anyway. So, a couple weeks.

So, there’s a couple of things going on that are centered around Christmas. One is our annual Christmas party where we virtually get together and hear from each other our Christmas and holiday greetings to one another from all over the world with the community that we’ve been sharing all year long. And you can participate in that pretty easy. Just use the hotline button that you use for prayer calls or dial 877-942-4253, which is also the number to call for prayer calls. We’re using that system to call in our holiday greetings to each other and we can do that right now for the next week and then we’ll have everything that we can have, and we’ll start putting that all together. So, yeah, call in any of your Christmas wishes or reflections on the year. And, so, yeah call it in. The only thing about this because we’re using the prayer lines, you may still have a prayer request, or you still may have a word of encouragement but don’t combine them. Don’t make a holiday greeting also a prayer request or that won’t go anywhere. Make that separate. Tis is likely only have the year when it’s like fine, you can call in a holiday greeting but if you also have a prayer request or encouragement, then call that in too. Just make them separate.

And then the other thing is the Daily Audio Bible Shop. We have put as much…we have put everything as deeply discounted as we can in the Shop for the holiday season. We normally have a Christmas box, Covid and, you know, has really disrupted a lot of different things, a lot of long-range planning that you just can’t do because you just don’t know. So, we decided this year the best thing to do is make your own Christmas box. One of the features or distinctives of the Christmas box each year is that comes with the Daily Audio Bible annual Christmas ornament and its exclusive to the Christmas box. Since we’re not doing that this year, we have…we didn’t want to miss the ornaments, we’ve been doing that, this is the seventh year we’ve had them. And, so, it’s like, not gonna skip the year. So, if you spend $40 or more in the Shop then we will send you the 2020 Christmas ornament along with your order as well.

And if you want to partner with the Daily Audio Bible here the last part of the year, thank you. If this mission to bring the spoken word of God every single day read fresh every single day and just deliver it to anyone who will listen to it anywhere on this planet any time of day or night for free no matter where we are and to build community around that rhythm, if that has been a light in your world then thank you for your partnership. There is a link on the homepage. If you are using the Daily Audio Bible app you can press the Give button in the upper right-hand corner or the mailing address, if you prefer, is PO Box 1996 Spring Hill Tennessee 37174.

And that’s it for today. I’m Brian I love you and I’ll be waiting for you here tomorrow.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hi family this is Biola from Maryland I hope you’re all doing well. Brian and Jill God bless you, God bless your ministry. Brian I am enjoying your commentaries as if it gets better every year. May God bless you and continue to give you wisdom. I’m still behind but I was reading all the transcripts on Tumblr and may God bless my…my…my brethren who do the transcription because I know it’s not easy. God bless you all, may God give you all your hearts desires. Thank you for helping me to catch up. While I was looking through, I saw the dialogue between China and Brian. China I’m so excited for you and Ben. And, you know, this is a new chapter in your life. No baby comes with a manual, you know, but you have the word of God, you have the direction and wisdom of the Holy Spirit, and then you have the wisdom of people like your parents and certain people who have had children. So, I’m praying that this new exciting phase of your life that the Lord will just walk with you hand-in-hand in the name of Jesus. Happy belated birthday. Larry from Florida I did hear your prayer request for me. Michaela from Gloucester…and that is why I went through tumbler because I think I missed what she was asking for. Anyway, God you know every one of Michaela’s hearts desires. Father Lord I pray in the name of Jesus that you will fulfill everyone in accordance with your will. Where there is darkness I pray that you will shine your light in the name of Jesus. John from Pennsylvania I’m also praying for the pastors Landis who lost their son to a mosquito bite, imagine that? Lord I pray that you will comfort them, you will wrap your arms around them, you will give them peace and joy in the name of Jesus. Even as they grieve, O God grieve with them and will God bless their hearts. And then I want to pray for all the family of Hope Christian church who lost Bishop Harry Jackson in November. And I’m praying that God may wrap his arms around his family and all the family of Hope Christian church and just bless you with His grace and just keep you in Jesus’ name …

Good morning Daily Audio Bible family this is Barb calling from Alberta. I am calling simply to say thank you for being there, you guys. I call in and maybe, I don’t know, once every two years or something like that but I listen an awful lot to the community prayer and to the prayers that are at the end of Brian’s daily speaking. And, you know it’s just amazing that we have this community in this day and age when sometimes we’re not so welcome in certain circles. And just to know that there’s a community that you can rest in the way I feel like we can together here is absolutely amazing and God given, and I just wanted to let you all know that. I love getting to know you and I’m praying with you often. Anyway thanks you guys.

Good morning DAB family this is John Opara from South Sudan. Just heard Harold from St. Louis call in about his son. I would like to join in prayer for his son. Father in the name of Jesus I am so grateful that we can come to You at any time with any need, any problem that we have, and I thank You because You are the one who has made us, and You are the one who can heal us. The Bible calls You Jehovah Raffa and this is the reason why we come together as a DAB family, to pray for Harold and his entire family, especially his son and declare divine health upon him. Father, with all the procedures that are going on, that You the Lord of heaven will step in and __ Your power. We believe that we have been healed by the stripes of Jesus and I believe that even right now that You are touching Harold’s son and that You are taking full and absolute control and that You are bringing healing not only to his physical body but every area of his life so that in all these things all glory and honor will be Yours. Thank You that You are also moving in the life of other people in this platform. So, thank You for answering. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Good morning Daily Audio Bible family this is Greg from Sweden, South Sweden. All right. December the 4th knowing God through love. I’m looking at first John 4. And, yes, this is the…this is…yeah…Jesus is the God of our souls, so we are looking to discover love. So, we start looking in the Bible to find how we can find our need for love. Some people look at it among other things. But hear a voice and thank you Brian for…for reading this day and to hear that this is love, not that we loved God but that he loved us first and gave himself for us. And to hear how you said that really spoke volumes to me. And you ended it by saying, “well what more can I say?” I agree. So, God bless you Daily Audio Bible family. Thank you, Jesus for your love. Yes, you’ve opened our eyes may we walk like we can see. Father thank you Lord that our pressing needs are met in your presence.

Hey DAB family my name is Christopher it’s been many years since I’ve called in last. I was about eight or nine years old when I called it with my dad and now having just turned 19 recently and just seeing how this community has grown over the years and the family like atmosphere has really gotten closer and closer together. It’s really encouraging, and you can see God working. I just want to thank Brian and his whole family for their obedience to the Lord and just their commitment even though life constantly throws curveballs and hard days. Just to see their commitment and consistently upload multiple podcasts a day to various platforms is just amazing that you can see God’s hand in all of it. Having recently graduated this year I just…I pray for just a clear vision for my life in the future. And I just want to be used by God to show His love to others and hopefully be able to do more of that in the future. But I thank each and every one of you just for this family and coming together and how we all interact and help each other grow. And, so,…

Hello Daily Audio Bible family this is Vonnie in Northern California it’s Monday, December 7th and I just heard Halo call in for prayer about how she’s feeling towards this classmate who’s really mean. And young woman of God, I don’t know how old you are, but you are definitely on your way to become a woman of God and a woman of faith. Your faith shield is inspiring. To call in and ask for prayer about this is the absolute right thing to do. I remember when I was young and I asked my mom, I lamented over somebody I was actually working with and she said, “Vonnie we’re gonna be praying for her, that God would bless her.” And Jesus told us to pray for our enemies. And, you know what happens, is, you know what, it can be miraculous. That person needs your prayer. So, every time you feel upset about how that person treats you or other people pray for them, pray that God will work in their hearts and it will amazingly change your own attitude when you lift that person up. And keep on lifting them up to the Lord and asking God to work in our hearts and bless them. Your faith is so inspiring to me Halo. And you keep it up girl. You’re going to see some changes and I’m going to be praying for you about this because I know the Lord can work. And He is working in you. Keep on being that inspiration and you will go far, that faith shield will carry you and the Lord is gonna work in you. Thank you for calling…
