Deuteronomy 34 - Joshua 2

The Death of Moses

34 Then Moses climbed Mount Nebo(A) from the plains of Moab to the top of Pisgah,(B) across from Jericho.(C) There the Lord showed(D) him the whole land—from Gilead to Dan,(E) all of Naphtali, the territory of Ephraim and Manasseh, all the land of Judah as far as the Mediterranean Sea,(F) the Negev(G) and the whole region from the Valley of Jericho, the City of Palms,(H) as far as Zoar.(I) Then the Lord said to him, “This is the land I promised on oath(J) to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob(K) when I said, ‘I will give it(L) to your descendants.’ I have let you see it with your eyes, but you will not cross(M) over into it.”

And Moses the servant of the Lord(N) died(O) there in Moab, as the Lord had said. He buried him[a] in Moab, in the valley opposite Beth Peor,(P) but to this day no one knows where his grave is.(Q) Moses was a hundred and twenty years old(R) when he died, yet his eyes were not weak(S) nor his strength gone.(T) The Israelites grieved for Moses in the plains of Moab(U) thirty days,(V) until the time of weeping and mourning(W) was over.

Now Joshua son of Nun was filled with the spirit[b] of wisdom(X) because Moses had laid his hands on him.(Y) So the Israelites listened to him and did what the Lord had commanded Moses.

10 Since then, no prophet(Z) has risen in Israel like Moses,(AA) whom the Lord knew face to face,(AB) 11 who did all those signs and wonders(AC) the Lord sent him to do in Egypt—to Pharaoh and to all his officials(AD) and to his whole land. 12 For no one has(AE) ever shown the mighty power or performed the awesome deeds(AF) that Moses did in the sight of all Israel.

Joshua Installed as Leader

After the death of Moses the servant of the Lord,(AG) the Lord said to Joshua(AH) son of Nun, Moses’ aide: “Moses my servant is dead. Now then, you and all these people, get ready to cross the Jordan River(AI) into the land(AJ) I am about to give to them(AK)—to the Israelites. I will give you every place where you set your foot,(AL) as I promised Moses.(AM) Your territory will extend from the desert to Lebanon,(AN) and from the great river, the Euphrates(AO)—all the Hittite(AP) country—to the Mediterranean Sea in the west.(AQ) No one will be able to stand against you(AR) all the days of your life. As I was with(AS) Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake(AT) you. Be strong(AU) and courageous,(AV) because you will lead these people to inherit the land I swore to their ancestors(AW) to give them.

“Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey(AX) all the law(AY) my servant Moses(AZ) gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left,(BA) that you may be successful wherever you go.(BB) Keep this Book of the Law(BC) always on your lips;(BD) meditate(BE) on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.(BF) Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid;(BG) do not be discouraged,(BH) for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”(BI)

10 So Joshua ordered the officers of the people:(BJ) 11 “Go through the camp(BK) and tell the people, ‘Get your provisions(BL) ready. Three days(BM) from now you will cross the Jordan(BN) here to go in and take possession(BO) of the land the Lord your God is giving you for your own.’”

12 But to the Reubenites, the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh,(BP) Joshua said, 13 “Remember the command that Moses the servant of the Lord gave you after he said, ‘The Lord your God will give you rest(BQ) by giving you this land.’ 14 Your wives,(BR) your children and your livestock may stay in the land(BS) that Moses gave you east of the Jordan, but all your fighting men, ready for battle,(BT) must cross over ahead of your fellow Israelites.(BU) You are to help them 15 until the Lord gives them rest, as he has done for you, and until they too have taken possession of the land the Lord your God is giving them. After that, you may go back and occupy your own land, which Moses the servant of the Lord gave you east of the Jordan toward the sunrise.”(BV)

16 Then they answered Joshua, “Whatever you have commanded us we will do, and wherever you send us we will go.(BW) 17 Just as we fully obeyed Moses, so we will obey you.(BX) Only may the Lord your God be with you as he was with Moses. 18 Whoever rebels against your word and does not obey(BY) it, whatever you may command them, will be put to death. Only be strong and courageous!(BZ)

Rahab and the Spies

Then Joshua son of Nun secretly sent two spies(CA) from Shittim.(CB) “Go, look over(CC) the land,” he said, “especially Jericho.(CD)” So they went and entered the house of a prostitute named Rahab(CE) and stayed there.

The king of Jericho was told, “Look, some of the Israelites have come here tonight to spy out the land.” So the king of Jericho sent this message to Rahab:(CF) “Bring out the men who came to you and entered your house, because they have come to spy out the whole land.”

But the woman had taken the two men(CG) and hidden them.(CH) She said, “Yes, the men came to me, but I did not know where they had come from. At dusk, when it was time to close the city gate,(CI) they left. I don’t know which way they went. Go after them quickly. You may catch up with them.”(CJ) (But she had taken them up to the roof and hidden them under the stalks of flax(CK) she had laid out on the roof.)(CL) So the men set out in pursuit of the spies on the road that leads to the fords of the Jordan,(CM) and as soon as the pursuers(CN) had gone out, the gate was shut.

Before the spies lay down for the night, she went up on the roof(CO) and said to them, “I know that the Lord has given you this land and that a great fear(CP) of you has fallen on us, so that all who live in this country are melting in fear because of you. 10 We have heard how the Lord dried up(CQ) the water of the Red Sea[c] for you when you came out of Egypt,(CR) and what you did to Sihon and Og,(CS) the two kings of the Amorites(CT) east of the Jordan,(CU) whom you completely destroyed.[d](CV) 11 When we heard of it, our hearts melted in fear(CW) and everyone’s courage failed(CX) because of you,(CY) for the Lord your God(CZ) is God in heaven above and on the earth(DA) below.

12 “Now then, please swear to me(DB) by the Lord that you will show kindness(DC) to my family, because I have shown kindness to you. Give me a sure sign(DD) 13 that you will spare the lives of my father and mother, my brothers and sisters, and all who belong to them(DE)—and that you will save us from death.”

14 “Our lives for your lives!”(DF) the men assured her. “If you don’t tell what we are doing, we will treat you kindly and faithfully(DG) when the Lord gives us the land.”

15 So she let them down by a rope(DH) through the window,(DI) for the house she lived in was part of the city wall. 16 She said to them, “Go to the hills(DJ) so the pursuers(DK) will not find you. Hide yourselves there three days(DL) until they return, and then go on your way.”(DM)

17 Now the men had said to her, “This oath(DN) you made us swear will not be binding on us 18 unless, when we enter the land, you have tied this scarlet cord(DO) in the window(DP) through which you let us down, and unless you have brought your father and mother, your brothers and all your family(DQ) into your house. 19 If any of them go outside your house into the street, their blood will be on their own heads;(DR) we will not be responsible. As for those who are in the house with you, their blood will be on our head(DS) if a hand is laid on them. 20 But if you tell what we are doing, we will be released from the oath you made us swear.(DT)

21 “Agreed,” she replied. “Let it be as you say.”

So she sent them away, and they departed. And she tied the scarlet cord(DU) in the window.(DV)

22 When they left, they went into the hills and stayed there three days,(DW) until the pursuers(DX) had searched all along the road and returned without finding them. 23 Then the two men started back. They went down out of the hills, forded the river and came to Joshua son of Nun and told him everything that had happened to them. 24 They said to Joshua, “The Lord has surely given the whole land into our hands;(DY) all the people are melting in fear(DZ) because of us.”

Luke 13:22-14:6

The Narrow Door

22 Then Jesus went through the towns and villages, teaching as he made his way to Jerusalem.(A) 23 Someone asked him, “Lord, are only a few people going to be saved?”

He said to them, 24 “Make every effort to enter through the narrow door,(B) because many, I tell you, will try to enter and will not be able to. 25 Once the owner of the house gets up and closes the door, you will stand outside knocking and pleading, ‘Sir, open the door for us.’

“But he will answer, ‘I don’t know you or where you come from.’(C)

26 “Then you will say, ‘We ate and drank with you, and you taught in our streets.’

27 “But he will reply, ‘I don’t know you or where you come from. Away from me, all you evildoers!’(D)

28 “There will be weeping there, and gnashing of teeth,(E) when you see Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, but you yourselves thrown out. 29 People will come from east and west(F) and north and south, and will take their places at the feast in the kingdom of God. 30 Indeed there are those who are last who will be first, and first who will be last.”(G)

Jesus’ Sorrow for Jerusalem(H)(I)

31 At that time some Pharisees came to Jesus and said to him, “Leave this place and go somewhere else. Herod(J) wants to kill you.”

32 He replied, “Go tell that fox, ‘I will keep on driving out demons and healing people today and tomorrow, and on the third day I will reach my goal.’(K) 33 In any case, I must press on today and tomorrow and the next day—for surely no prophet(L) can die outside Jerusalem!

34 “Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings,(M) and you were not willing. 35 Look, your house is left to you desolate.(N) I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.’[a](O)

Jesus at a Pharisee’s House(P)

14 One Sabbath, when Jesus went to eat in the house of a prominent Pharisee,(Q) he was being carefully watched.(R) There in front of him was a man suffering from abnormal swelling of his body. Jesus asked the Pharisees and experts in the law,(S) “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath or not?”(T) But they remained silent. So taking hold of the man, he healed him and sent him on his way.

Then he asked them, “If one of you has a child[b] or an ox that falls into a well on the Sabbath day, will you not immediately pull it out?”(U) And they had nothing to say.

Psalm 79

Psalm 79

A psalm of Asaph.

O God, the nations have invaded your inheritance;(A)
they have defiled(B) your holy temple,
they have reduced Jerusalem to rubble.(C)
They have left the dead bodies of your servants
as food for the birds of the sky,(D)
the flesh of your own people for the animals of the wild.(E)
They have poured out blood like water
all around Jerusalem,
and there is no one to bury(F) the dead.(G)
We are objects of contempt to our neighbors,
of scorn(H) and derision to those around us.(I)

How long,(J) Lord? Will you be angry(K) forever?
How long will your jealousy burn like fire?(L)
Pour out your wrath(M) on the nations
that do not acknowledge(N) you,
on the kingdoms
that do not call on your name;(O)
for they have devoured(P) Jacob
and devastated his homeland.

Do not hold against us the sins of past generations;(Q)
may your mercy come quickly to meet us,
for we are in desperate need.(R)
Help us,(S) God our Savior,
for the glory of your name;
deliver us and forgive our sins
for your name’s sake.(T)
10 Why should the nations say,
“Where is their God?”(U)

Before our eyes, make known among the nations
that you avenge(V) the outpoured blood(W) of your servants.
11 May the groans of the prisoners come before you;
with your strong arm preserve those condemned to die.
12 Pay back into the laps(X) of our neighbors seven times(Y)
the contempt they have hurled at you, Lord.
13 Then we your people, the sheep of your pasture,(Z)
will praise you forever;(AA)
from generation to generation
we will proclaim your praise.

Deuteronomy 33

Moses Blesses the Tribes(A)

33 This is the blessing(B) that Moses the man of God(C) pronounced on the Israelites before his death. He said:

“The Lord came from Sinai(D)
and dawned over them from Seir;(E)
he shone forth(F) from Mount Paran.(G)
He came with[a] myriads of holy ones(H)
from the south, from his mountain slopes.[b]
Surely it is you who love(I) the people;
all the holy ones are in your hand.(J)
At your feet they all bow down,(K)
and from you receive instruction,
the law that Moses gave us,(L)
the possession of the assembly of Jacob.(M)
He was king(N) over Jeshurun[c](O)
when the leaders of the people assembled,
along with the tribes of Israel.

“Let Reuben live and not die,
nor[d] his people be few.”(P)

And this he said about Judah:(Q)

“Hear, Lord, the cry of Judah;
bring him to his people.
With his own hands he defends his cause.
Oh, be his help against his foes!”

About Levi(R) he said:

“Your Thummim and Urim(S) belong
to your faithful servant.(T)
You tested(U) him at Massah;
you contended with him at the waters of Meribah.(V)
He said of his father and mother,(W)
‘I have no regard for them.’
He did not recognize his brothers
or acknowledge his own children,
but he watched over your word
and guarded your covenant.(X)
10 He teaches(Y) your precepts to Jacob
and your law to Israel.(Z)
He offers incense before you(AA)
and whole burnt offerings on your altar.(AB)
11 Bless all his skills, Lord,
and be pleased with the work of his hands.(AC)
Strike down those who rise against him,
his foes till they rise no more.”

and the favor of him who dwelt in the burning bush.(AL)
Let all these rest on the head of Joseph,
on the brow of the prince among[e] his brothers.(AM)
17 In majesty he is like a firstborn bull;
his horns(AN) are the horns of a wild ox.(AO)
With them he will gore(AP) the nations,
even those at the ends of the earth.
Such are the ten thousands of Ephraim;(AQ)
such are the thousands of Manasseh.(AR)

18 About Zebulun(AS) he said:

they will feast on the abundance of the seas,(AW)
on the treasures hidden in the sand.”

20 About Gad(AX) he said:

“Blessed is he who enlarges Gad’s domain!(AY)
Gad lives there like a lion,
tearing at arm or head.
21 He chose the best land for himself;(AZ)
the leader’s portion was kept for him.(BA)
When the heads of the people assembled,
he carried out the Lord’s righteous will,(BB)
and his judgments concerning Israel.”

22 About Dan(BC) he said:

26 “There is no one like the God of Jeshurun,(BI)
who rides(BJ) across the heavens to help you(BK)
and on the clouds(BL) in his majesty.(BM)
27 The eternal(BN) God is your refuge,(BO)
and underneath are the everlasting(BP) arms.
He will drive out your enemies before you,(BQ)
saying, ‘Destroy them!’(BR)
28 So Israel will live in safety;(BS)
Jacob will dwell[f] secure
in a land of grain and new wine,

29 Blessed are you, Israel!(BU)
Who is like you,(BV)
a people saved by the Lord?(BW)
He is your shield and helper(BX)

Luke 13:1-21

Repent or Perish

13 Now there were some present at that time who told Jesus about the Galileans whose blood Pilate(A) had mixed with their sacrifices. Jesus answered, “Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans because they suffered this way?(B) I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish. Or those eighteen who died when the tower in Siloam(C) fell on them—do you think they were more guilty than all the others living in Jerusalem? I tell you, no! But unless you repent,(D) you too will all perish.”

Then he told this parable: “A man had a fig tree growing in his vineyard, and he went to look for fruit on it but did not find any.(E) So he said to the man who took care of the vineyard, ‘For three years now I’ve been coming to look for fruit on this fig tree and haven’t found any. Cut it down!(F) Why should it use up the soil?’

“‘Sir,’ the man replied, ‘leave it alone for one more year, and I’ll dig around it and fertilize it. If it bears fruit next year, fine! If not, then cut it down.’”

Jesus Heals a Crippled Woman on the Sabbath

10 On a Sabbath Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues,(G) 11 and a woman was there who had been crippled by a spirit for eighteen years.(H) She was bent over and could not straighten up at all. 12 When Jesus saw her, he called her forward and said to her, “Woman, you are set free from your infirmity.” 13 Then he put his hands on her,(I) and immediately she straightened up and praised God.

14 Indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath,(J) the synagogue leader(K) said to the people, “There are six days for work.(L) So come and be healed on those days, not on the Sabbath.”

15 The Lord answered him, “You hypocrites! Doesn’t each of you on the Sabbath untie your ox or donkey from the stall and lead it out to give it water?(M) 16 Then should not this woman, a daughter of Abraham,(N) whom Satan(O) has kept bound for eighteen long years, be set free on the Sabbath day from what bound her?”

17 When he said this, all his opponents were humiliated,(P) but the people were delighted with all the wonderful things he was doing.

The Parables of the Mustard Seed and the Yeast(Q)(R)

18 Then Jesus asked, “What is the kingdom of God(S) like?(T) What shall I compare it to? 19 It is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his garden. It grew and became a tree,(U) and the birds perched in its branches.”(V)

20 Again he asked, “What shall I compare the kingdom of God to? 21 It is like yeast that a woman took and mixed into about sixty pounds[a] of flour until it worked all through the dough.”(W)

Psalm 78:65-72

65 Then the Lord awoke as from sleep,(A)
as a warrior wakes from the stupor of wine.
66 He beat back his enemies;
he put them to everlasting shame.(B)
67 Then he rejected the tents of Joseph,
he did not choose the tribe of Ephraim;(C)
68 but he chose the tribe of Judah,(D)
Mount Zion,(E) which he loved.
69 He built his sanctuary(F) like the heights,
like the earth that he established forever.
70 He chose David(G) his servant
and took him from the sheep pens;
71 from tending the sheep(H) he brought him
to be the shepherd(I) of his people Jacob,
of Israel his inheritance.
72 And David shepherded them with integrity of heart;(J)
with skillful hands he led them.

Deuteronomy 32:28-52

28 They are a nation without sense,
there is no discernment(A) in them.
29 If only they were wise and would understand this(B)
and discern what their end will be!(C)
30 How could one man chase a thousand,
or two put ten thousand to flight,(D)
unless their Rock had sold them,(E)
unless the Lord had given them up?(F)
31 For their rock is not like our Rock,(G)
as even our enemies concede.(H)
32 Their vine comes from the vine of Sodom(I)
and from the fields of Gomorrah.
Their grapes are filled with poison,(J)
and their clusters with bitterness.(K)
33 Their wine is the venom of serpents,
the deadly poison of cobras.(L)

34 “Have I not kept this in reserve
and sealed it in my vaults?(M)
35 It is mine to avenge;(N) I will repay.(O)
In due time their foot will slip;(P)
their day of disaster is near
and their doom rushes upon them.(Q)

36 The Lord will vindicate his people(R)
and relent(S) concerning his servants(T)
when he sees their strength is gone
and no one is left, slave(U) or free.[a]
37 He will say: “Now where are their gods,
the rock they took refuge in,(V)
38 the gods who ate the fat of their sacrifices
and drank the wine of their drink offerings?(W)
Let them rise up to help you!
Let them give you shelter!

39 “See now that I myself am he!(X)
There is no god besides me.(Y)
I put to death(Z) and I bring to life,(AA)
I have wounded and I will heal,(AB)
and no one can deliver out of my hand.(AC)
40 I lift my hand(AD) to heaven and solemnly swear:
As surely as I live forever,(AE)
41 when I sharpen my flashing sword(AF)
and my hand grasps it in judgment,
I will take vengeance(AG) on my adversaries
and repay those who hate me.(AH)
42 I will make my arrows drunk with blood,(AI)
while my sword devours flesh:(AJ)
the blood of the slain and the captives,
the heads of the enemy leaders.”

43 Rejoice,(AK) you nations, with his people,[b][c]
for he will avenge the blood of his servants;(AL)
he will take vengeance on his enemies(AM)
and make atonement for his land and people.(AN)

44 Moses came with Joshua[d](AO) son of Nun and spoke all the words of this song in the hearing of the people. 45 When Moses finished reciting all these words to all Israel, 46 he said to them, “Take to heart all the words I have solemnly declared to you this day,(AP) so that you may command(AQ) your children to obey carefully all the words of this law. 47 They are not just idle words for you—they are your life.(AR) By them you will live long(AS) in the land you are crossing the Jordan to possess.”

Moses to Die on Mount Nebo

48 On that same day the Lord told Moses,(AT) 49 “Go up into the Abarim(AU) Range to Mount Nebo(AV) in Moab, across from Jericho,(AW) and view Canaan,(AX) the land I am giving the Israelites as their own possession. 50 There on the mountain that you have climbed you will die(AY) and be gathered to your people, just as your brother Aaron died(AZ) on Mount Hor(BA) and was gathered to his people. 51 This is because both of you broke faith with me in the presence of the Israelites at the waters of Meribah Kadesh(BB) in the Desert of Zin(BC) and because you did not uphold my holiness among the Israelites.(BD) 52 Therefore, you will see the land only from a distance;(BE) you will not enter(BF) the land I am giving to the people of Israel.”

35 “Be dressed ready for service and keep your lamps burning, 36 like servants waiting for their master to return from a wedding banquet, so that when he comes and knocks they can immediately open the door for him. 37 It will be good for those servants whose master finds them watching when he comes.(C) Truly I tell you, he will dress himself to serve, will have them recline at the table and will come and wait on them.(D) 38 It will be good for those servants whose master finds them ready, even if he comes in the middle of the night or toward daybreak. 39 But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what hour the thief(E) was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into. 40 You also must be ready,(F) because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.”

41 Peter asked, “Lord, are you telling this parable to us, or to everyone?”

42 The Lord(G) answered, “Who then is the faithful and wise manager, whom the master puts in charge of his servants to give them their food allowance at the proper time? 43 It will be good for that servant whom the master finds doing so when he returns. 44 Truly I tell you, he will put him in charge of all his possessions. 45 But suppose the servant says to himself, ‘My master is taking a long time in coming,’ and he then begins to beat the other servants, both men and women, and to eat and drink and get drunk. 46 The master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he is not aware of.(H) He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the unbelievers.

47 “The servant who knows the master’s will and does not get ready or does not do what the master wants will be beaten with many blows.(I) 48 But the one who does not know and does things deserving punishment will be beaten with few blows.(J) From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.

Not Peace but Division(K)

49 “I have come to bring fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled! 50 But I have a baptism(L) to undergo, and what constraint I am under until it is completed!(M) 51 Do you think I came to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but division. 52 From now on there will be five in one family divided against each other, three against two and two against three. 53 They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.”(N)

Interpreting the Times

54 He said to the crowd: “When you see a cloud rising in the west, immediately you say, ‘It’s going to rain,’ and it does.(O) 55 And when the south wind blows, you say, ‘It’s going to be hot,’ and it is. 56 Hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky. How is it that you don’t know how to interpret this present time?(P)

57 “Why don’t you judge for yourselves what is right? 58 As you are going with your adversary to the magistrate, try hard to be reconciled on the way, or your adversary may drag you off to the judge, and the judge turn you over to the officer, and the officer throw you into prison.(Q) 59 I tell you, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny.”(R)

Deuteronomy 31:1-32:27

Joshua to Succeed Moses

31 Then Moses went out and spoke these words to all Israel: “I am now a hundred and twenty years old(A) and I am no longer able to lead you.(B) The Lord has said to me, ‘You shall not cross the Jordan.’(C) The Lord your God himself will cross(D) over ahead of you.(E) He will destroy these nations(F) before you, and you will take possession of their land. Joshua also will cross(G) over ahead of you, as the Lord said. And the Lord will do to them what he did to Sihon and Og,(H) the kings of the Amorites, whom he destroyed along with their land. The Lord will deliver(I) them to you, and you must do to them all that I have commanded you. Be strong and courageous.(J) Do not be afraid or terrified(K) because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you;(L) he will never leave you(M) nor forsake(N) you.”

Then Moses summoned Joshua and said(O) to him in the presence of all Israel, “Be strong and courageous, for you must go with this people into the land that the Lord swore to their ancestors to give them,(P) and you must divide it among them as their inheritance. The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you;(Q) he will never leave you nor forsake you.(R) Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.”

Public Reading of the Law

So Moses wrote(S) down this law and gave it to the Levitical priests, who carried(T) the ark of the covenant of the Lord, and to all the elders of Israel. 10 Then Moses commanded them: “At the end of every seven years, in the year for canceling debts,(U) during the Festival of Tabernacles,(V) 11 when all Israel comes to appear(W) before the Lord your God at the place he will choose,(X) you shall read this law(Y) before them in their hearing. 12 Assemble the people—men, women and children, and the foreigners residing in your towns—so they can listen and learn(Z) to fear(AA) the Lord your God and follow carefully all the words of this law. 13 Their children,(AB) who do not know this law, must hear it and learn to fear the Lord your God as long as you live in the land you are crossing the Jordan to possess.”

Israel’s Rebellion Predicted

14 The Lord said to Moses, “Now the day of your death(AC) is near. Call Joshua(AD) and present yourselves at the tent of meeting, where I will commission him.(AE)” So Moses and Joshua came and presented themselves at the tent of meeting.(AF)

15 Then the Lord appeared at the tent in a pillar of cloud, and the cloud stood over the entrance to the tent.(AG) 16 And the Lord said to Moses: “You are going to rest with your ancestors,(AH) and these people will soon prostitute(AI) themselves to the foreign gods of the land they are entering. They will forsake(AJ) me and break the covenant I made with them. 17 And in that day I will become angry(AK) with them and forsake(AL) them; I will hide(AM) my face(AN) from them, and they will be destroyed. Many disasters(AO) and calamities will come on them, and in that day they will ask, ‘Have not these disasters come on us because our God is not with us?’(AP) 18 And I will certainly hide my face in that day because of all their wickedness in turning to other gods.

19 “Now write(AQ) down this song and teach it to the Israelites and have them sing it, so that it may be a witness(AR) for me against them. 20 When I have brought them into the land flowing with milk and honey, the land I promised on oath to their ancestors,(AS) and when they eat their fill and thrive, they will turn to other gods(AT) and worship them,(AU) rejecting me and breaking my covenant.(AV) 21 And when many disasters and calamities come on them,(AW) this song will testify against them, because it will not be forgotten by their descendants. I know what they are disposed to do,(AX) even before I bring them into the land I promised them on oath.” 22 So Moses wrote(AY) down this song that day and taught it to the Israelites.

23 The Lord gave this command(AZ) to Joshua son of Nun: “Be strong and courageous,(BA) for you will bring the Israelites into the land I promised them on oath, and I myself will be with you.”

24 After Moses finished writing(BB) in a book the words of this law(BC) from beginning to end, 25 he gave this command to the Levites who carried(BD) the ark of the covenant of the Lord: 26 “Take this Book of the Law and place it beside the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God. There it will remain as a witness against you.(BE) 27 For I know how rebellious(BF) and stiff-necked(BG) you are. If you have been rebellious against the Lord while I am still alive and with you, how much more will you rebel after I die! 28 Assemble before me all the elders of your tribes and all your officials, so that I can speak these words in their hearing and call the heavens and the earth to testify against them.(BH) 29 For I know that after my death you are sure to become utterly corrupt(BI) and to turn from the way I have commanded you. In days to come, disaster(BJ) will fall on you because you will do evil in the sight of the Lord and arouse his anger by what your hands have made.”

The Song of Moses

30 And Moses recited the words of this song from beginning to end in the hearing of the whole assembly of Israel:

32 Listen,(BK) you heavens,(BL) and I will speak;
hear, you earth, the words of my mouth.(BM)
Let my teaching fall like rain(BN)
and my words descend like dew,(BO)
like showers(BP) on new grass,
like abundant rain on tender plants.

I will proclaim(BQ) the name of the Lord.(BR)
Oh, praise the greatness(BS) of our God!
He is the Rock,(BT) his works are perfect,(BU)
and all his ways are just.
A faithful God(BV) who does no wrong,
upright(BW) and just is he.(BX)

They are corrupt and not his children;
to their shame they are a warped and crooked generation.(BY)
Is this the way you repay(BZ) the Lord,
you foolish(CA) and unwise people?(CB)
Is he not your Father,(CC) your Creator,[a]
who made you and formed you?(CD)

Remember the days of old;(CE)
consider the generations long past.(CF)
Ask your father and he will tell you,
your elders, and they will explain to you.(CG)
When the Most High(CH) gave the nations their inheritance,
when he divided all mankind,(CI)
he set up boundaries(CJ) for the peoples
according to the number of the sons of Israel.[b](CK)
For the Lord’s portion(CL) is his people,
Jacob his allotted inheritance.(CM)

10 In a desert(CN) land he found him,
in a barren and howling waste.(CO)
He shielded(CP) him and cared for him;
he guarded him as the apple of his eye,(CQ)
11 like an eagle that stirs up its nest
and hovers over its young,(CR)
that spreads its wings to catch them
and carries them aloft.(CS)
12 The Lord alone led(CT) him;(CU)
no foreign god was with him.(CV)

13 He made him ride on the heights(CW) of the land
and fed him with the fruit of the fields.
He nourished him with honey from the rock,(CX)
and with oil(CY) from the flinty crag,
14 with curds and milk from herd and flock
and with fattened lambs and goats,
with choice rams of Bashan(CZ)
and the finest kernels of wheat.(DA)
You drank the foaming blood of the grape.(DB)

15 Jeshurun[c](DC) grew fat(DD) and kicked;
filled with food, they became heavy and sleek.
They abandoned(DE) the God who made them
and rejected the Rock(DF) their Savior.
16 They made him jealous(DG) with their foreign gods
and angered(DH) him with their detestable idols.
17 They sacrificed(DI) to false gods,(DJ) which are not God—
gods they had not known,(DK)
gods that recently appeared,(DL)
gods your ancestors did not fear.
18 You deserted the Rock, who fathered you;
you forgot(DM) the God who gave you birth.

19 The Lord saw this and rejected them(DN)
because he was angered by his sons and daughters.(DO)
20 “I will hide my face(DP) from them,” he said,
“and see what their end will be;
for they are a perverse generation,(DQ)
children who are unfaithful.(DR)
21 They made me jealous(DS) by what is no god
and angered me with their worthless idols.(DT)
I will make them envious by those who are not a people;
I will make them angry by a nation that has no understanding.(DU)
22 For a fire will be kindled by my wrath,(DV)
one that burns down to the realm of the dead below.(DW)
It will devour(DX) the earth and its harvests(DY)
and set afire the foundations of the mountains.(DZ)

23 “I will heap calamities(EA) on them
and spend my arrows(EB) against them.
24 I will send wasting famine(EC) against them,
consuming pestilence(ED) and deadly plague;(EE)
I will send against them the fangs of wild beasts,(EF)
the venom of vipers(EG) that glide in the dust.(EH)
25 In the street the sword will make them childless;
in their homes terror(EI) will reign.(EJ)
The young men and young women will perish,
the infants and those with gray hair.(EK)
26 I said I would scatter(EL) them
and erase their name from human memory,(EM)
27 but I dreaded the taunt of the enemy,
lest the adversary misunderstand(EN)
and say, ‘Our hand has triumphed;
the Lord has not done all this.’”(EO)

Luke 12:8-34

“I tell you, whoever publicly acknowledges me before others, the Son of Man will also acknowledge before the angels of God.(A) But whoever disowns me before others will be disowned(B) before the angels of God. 10 And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man(C) will be forgiven, but anyone who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven.(D)

11 “When you are brought before synagogues, rulers and authorities, do not worry about how you will defend yourselves or what you will say,(E) 12 for the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what you should say.”(F)

The Parable of the Rich Fool

13 Someone in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.”

14 Jesus replied, “Man, who appointed me a judge or an arbiter between you?” 15 Then he said to them, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.”(G)

16 And he told them this parable: “The ground of a certain rich man yielded an abundant harvest. 17 He thought to himself, ‘What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.’

18 “Then he said, ‘This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store my surplus grain. 19 And I’ll say to myself, “You have plenty of grain laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.”’

20 “But God said to him, ‘You fool!(H) This very night your life will be demanded from you.(I) Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’(J)

21 “This is how it will be with whoever stores up things for themselves but is not rich toward God.”(K)

Do Not Worry(L)

22 Then Jesus said to his disciples: “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear. 23 For life is more than food, and the body more than clothes. 24 Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them.(M) And how much more valuable you are than birds! 25 Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to your life[a]? 26 Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest?

27 “Consider how the wild flowers grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor(N) was dressed like one of these. 28 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today, and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, how much more will he clothe you—you of little faith!(O) 29 And do not set your heart on what you will eat or drink; do not worry about it. 30 For the pagan world runs after all such things, and your Father(P) knows that you need them.(Q) 31 But seek his kingdom,(R) and these things will be given to you as well.(S)

32 “Do not be afraid,(T) little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom.(U) 33 Sell your possessions and give to the poor.(V) Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven(W) that will never fail, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys.(X) 34 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.(Y)

Psalm 78:32-55

32 In spite of all this, they kept on sinning;(A)
in spite of his wonders,(B) they did not believe.(C)
33 So he ended their days in futility(D)
and their years in terror.
34 Whenever God slew them, they would seek(E) him;
they eagerly turned to him again.
35 They remembered that God was their Rock,(F)
that God Most High was their Redeemer.(G)
36 But then they would flatter him with their mouths,(H)
lying to him with their tongues;
37 their hearts were not loyal(I) to him,
they were not faithful to his covenant.
38 Yet he was merciful;(J)
he forgave(K) their iniquities(L)
and did not destroy them.
Time after time he restrained his anger(M)
and did not stir up his full wrath.
39 He remembered that they were but flesh,(N)
a passing breeze(O) that does not return.

40 How often they rebelled(P) against him in the wilderness(Q)
and grieved him(R) in the wasteland!
41 Again and again they put God to the test;(S)
they vexed the Holy One of Israel.(T)
42 They did not remember(U) his power—
the day he redeemed them from the oppressor,(V)
43 the day he displayed his signs(W) in Egypt,
his wonders(X) in the region of Zoan.
44 He turned their river into blood;(Y)
they could not drink from their streams.
45 He sent swarms of flies(Z) that devoured them,
and frogs(AA) that devastated them.
46 He gave their crops to the grasshopper,(AB)
their produce to the locust.(AC)
47 He destroyed their vines with hail(AD)
and their sycamore-figs with sleet.
48 He gave over their cattle to the hail,
their livestock(AE) to bolts of lightning.
49 He unleashed against them his hot anger,(AF)
his wrath, indignation and hostility—
a band of destroying angels.(AG)
50 He prepared a path for his anger;
he did not spare them from death
but gave them over to the plague.
51 He struck down all the firstborn of Egypt,(AH)
the firstfruits of manhood in the tents of Ham.(AI)
52 But he brought his people out like a flock;(AJ)
he led them like sheep through the wilderness.
53 He guided them safely, so they were unafraid;
but the sea engulfed(AK) their enemies.(AL)
54 And so he brought them to the border of his holy land,
to the hill country his right hand(AM) had taken.
55 He drove out nations(AN) before them
and allotted their lands to them as an inheritance;(AO)
he settled the tribes of Israel in their homes.

Deuteronomy 29-30

Renewing the Covenant

29 These are the words of the covenant(A) the Lord commanded Moses to make with the Israelites in the land of Moab, in addition to the covenant he had made with them at Horeb.(B) Moses summoned all Israel and said to them, “You have seen with your own eyes(C) everything the Lord did in Egypt to Pharaoh, to all his officials, and to his entire land. You saw with your own eyes the great trials and those great signs and wonders.(D) Yet to this day the Lord has not given you a mind to understand, eyes to see, or ears to hear.(E) I led you forty years in the wilderness; your clothes and the sandals on your feet did not wear out;(F) you did not eat food or drink wine or beer—so that you might know that I am the Lord your God.(G) When you reached this place, King Sihon of Heshbon and King Og of Bashan came out against us in battle, but we defeated them.(H) We took their land and gave it as an inheritance to the Reubenites, the Gadites, and half the tribe of Manasseh.(I) Therefore, observe the words of this covenant(J) and follow them, so that you will succeed in everything you do.(K)

10 “All of you are standing today before the Lord your God—your leaders, tribes, elders, officials, all the men of Israel, 11 your dependents, your wives, and the resident aliens in your camps who cut your wood and draw your water— 12 so that you may enter into the covenant of the Lord your God, which he is making with you today, so that you may enter into his oath 13 and so that he may establish you today as his people and he may be your God as he promised you and as he swore to your fathers Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.(L) 14 I am making this covenant and this oath not only with you, 15 but also with those who are standing here with us today in the presence of the Lord our God and with those who are not here today.

Abandoning the Covenant

16 “Indeed, you know how we lived in the land of Egypt and passed through the nations where you traveled. 17 You saw their abhorrent images and idols made of wood, stone, silver, and gold, which were among them.(M) 18 Be sure there is no man, woman, clan, or tribe among you today whose heart turns away from the Lord our God to go and worship the gods of those nations. Be sure there is no root among you bearing poisonous and bitter fruit.(N) 19 When someone hears the words of this oath, he may consider himself exempt,[a] thinking, ‘I will have peace even though I follow my own stubborn heart.’ This will lead to the destruction of the well-watered land as well as the dry land. 20 The Lord will not be willing to forgive him. Instead, his anger and jealousy will burn against that person, and every curse written in this scroll will descend on him. The Lord will blot out his name under heaven,(O) 21 and single him out for harm from all the tribes of Israel, according to all the curses of the covenant written in this book of the law.

22 “Future generations of your children who follow you and the foreigner who comes from a distant country will see the plagues of that land and the sicknesses the Lord has inflicted on it. 23 All its soil will be a burning waste of sulfur and salt, unsown, producing nothing, with no plant growing on it, just like the fall of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, which the Lord demolished in his fierce anger.(P) 24 All the nations will ask, ‘Why has the Lord done this to this land? Why this intense outburst of anger?’ 25 Then people will answer, ‘It is because they abandoned the covenant of the Lord, the God of their fathers, which he had made with them when he brought them out of the land of Egypt. 26 They began to serve other gods, bowing in worship to gods they had not known(Q)—gods that the Lord had not permitted them to worship.(R) 27 Therefore the Lord’s anger burned against this land, and he brought every curse written in this book on it. 28 The Lord uprooted them from their land in his anger, rage, and intense wrath, and threw them into another land where they are today.’ 29 The hidden things belong to the Lord our God, but the revealed things belong to us and our children forever, so that we may follow all the words of this law.

Returning to the Lord

30 “When all these things happen to you—the blessings and curses I have set before you—and you come to your senses while you are in all the nations where the Lord your God has driven you,(S) and you and your children return to the Lord your God and obey him with all your heart and all your soul(T) by doing[b] everything I am commanding you today, then he will restore your fortunes,[c](U) have compassion on you, and gather you again from all the peoples where the Lord your God has scattered you.(V) Even if your exiles are at the farthest horizon,[d] he will gather you and bring you back from there.(W) The Lord your God will bring you into the land your fathers possessed, and you will take possession of it.(X) He will cause you to prosper and multiply you more than he did your fathers.(Y) The Lord your God will circumcise your heart(Z) and the hearts of your descendants, and you will love him with all your heart and all your soul so that you will live.(AA) The Lord your God will put all these curses on your enemies who hate and persecute you. Then you will again obey him and follow all his commands I am commanding you today. The Lord your God will make you prosper abundantly in all the work of your hands,(AB) your offspring,[e] the offspring of your livestock, and the produce of your land. Indeed, the Lord will again delight in your prosperity, as he delighted in that of your fathers, 10 when you obey the Lord your God by keeping his commands and statutes that are written in this book of the law and return to him with all your heart and all your soul.

Choose Life

11 “This command that I give you today is certainly not too difficult or beyond your reach. 12 It is not in heaven so that you have to ask, ‘Who will go up to heaven, get it for us, and proclaim it to us so that we may follow it?’ 13 And it is not across the sea so that you have to ask, ‘Who will cross the sea, get it for us, and proclaim it to us so that we may follow it?’ 14 But the message is very near you, in your mouth and in your heart, so that you may follow it.(AC) 15 See, today I have set before you life and prosperity, death and adversity.(AD) 16 For[f] I am commanding you today to love the Lord your God, to walk in his ways, and to keep his commands, statutes, and ordinances, so that you may live[g] and multiply, and the Lord your God may bless you in the land you are entering to possess. 17 But if your heart turns away and you do not listen and you are led astray to bow in worship to other gods and serve them, 18 I tell you today that you will certainly perish and will not prolong your days in the land you are entering to possess across the Jordan. 19 I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you today that I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Choose life(AE) so that you and your descendants may live, 20 love the Lord your God, obey him, and remain faithful[h] to him. For he is your life, and he will prolong your days as you live in the land the Lord swore to give to your fathers(AF) Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.”

Luke 11:37-12:7

Religious Hypocrisy Denounced

37 As he was speaking, a Pharisee(A) asked him to dine with him. So he went in and reclined at the table. 38 When the Pharisee saw this, he was amazed that he did not first perform the ritual washing[a](B) before dinner.(C) 39 But the Lord said to him, “Now you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside you are full of greed(D) and evil.(E) 40 Fools!(F) Didn’t he who made the outside make the inside too? 41 But give from what is within to the poor,[b](G) and then everything is clean(H) for you.

42 “But woe(I) to you Pharisees! You give a tenth[c](J) of mint, rue, and every kind of herb, and you bypass[d] justice(K) and love for God.[e](L) These things you should have done without neglecting the others.

43 “Woe to you Pharisees! You love the front seat(M) in the synagogues(N) and greetings in the marketplaces.

44 “Woe to you![f] You are like unmarked graves; (O) the people who walk over them don’t know it.”

45 One of the experts in the law(P) answered him, “Teacher, when you say these things you insult us too.”

46 Then he said: “Woe also to you experts in the law! You load people with burdens(Q) that are hard to carry, and yet you yourselves don’t touch these burdens with one of your fingers.(R)

47 “Woe to you! You build tombs[g] for the prophets,(S) and your fathers killed(T) them. 48 Therefore, you are witnesses(U) that you approve[h](V) the deeds of your fathers, for they killed them, and you build their monuments.[i] 49 Because of this, the wisdom of God(W) said, ‘I will send them prophets and apostles,(X) and some of them they will kill and persecute,’(Y) 50 so that this generation(Z) may be held responsible for the blood of all the prophets shed since the foundation of the world[j](AA) 51 from the blood of Abel(AB) to the blood of Zechariah,(AC) who perished between the altar and the sanctuary.

“Yes, I tell you, this generation will be held responsible.[k]

52 “Woe to you experts in the law! You have taken away the key to knowledge.(AD) You didn’t go in yourselves, and you hindered(AE) those who were trying to go in.”

53 When he left there,[l] the scribes and the Pharisees began to oppose(AF) him fiercely and to cross-examine him about many things; 54 they were lying in wait(AG) for him to trap him in something he said.[m](AH)

Beware of Religious Hypocrisy

12 Meanwhile, a crowd of many thousands came together, so that they were trampling(AI) on one another. He began to say to his disciples first,(AJ) “Be on your guard(AK) against the leaven[n](AL) of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.(AM) There is nothing covered that won’t be uncovered,(AN) nothing hidden that won’t be made known.(AO) Therefore, whatever you have said in the dark will be heard in the light, and what you have whispered in an ear in private rooms(AP) will be proclaimed on the housetops.(AQ)

Fear God

“I say to you, my friends,(AR) don’t fear(AS) those who kill the body, and after that can do nothing more. But I will show you the one to fear: Fear(AT) him who has authority to throw people into hell(AU) after death. Yes, I say to you, this is the one to fear! Aren’t five sparrows sold for two pennies?[o] Yet not one of them is forgotten in God’s sight.(AV) Indeed, the hairs of your head are all counted. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.

Psalm 78:1-31

Psalm 78

Lessons from Israel’s Past

A Maskil of Asaph.(A)

My people, hear my instruction;
listen to the words from my mouth.(B)
I will declare wise sayings;
I will speak mysteries from the past(C)
things we have heard and known
and that our fathers have passed down to us.(D)
We will not hide them from their children,
but will tell a future generation
the praiseworthy acts of the Lord,
his might, and the wondrous works
he has performed.(E)
He established a testimony in Jacob
and set up a law in Israel,
which he commanded our fathers
to teach to their children(F)
so that a future generation—
children yet to be born—might know.
They were to rise and tell their children(G)
so that they might put their confidence in God
and not forget God’s works,
but keep his commands.(H)
Then they would not be like their fathers,
a stubborn and rebellious generation,
a generation whose heart was not loyal
and whose spirit was not faithful to God.(I)

The Ephraimite archers turned back
on the day of battle.(J)
10 They did not keep God’s covenant
and refused to live by his law.(K)
11 They forgot what he had done,
the wondrous works he had shown them.(L)
12 He worked wonders in the sight of their fathers
in the land of Egypt, the territory of Zoan.(M)
13 He split the sea and brought them across;
the water stood firm like a wall.(N)
14 He led them with a cloud by day
and with a fiery light throughout the night.(O)
15 He split rocks in the wilderness
and gave them drink as abundant as the depths.(P)
16 He brought streams out of the stone
and made water flow down like rivers.(Q)

17 But they continued to sin against him,
rebelling in the desert against the Most High.(R)
18 They deliberately[a] tested God,
demanding the food they craved.(S)
19 They spoke against God, saying,
“Is God able to provide food in the wilderness?
20 Look! He struck the rock and water gushed out;
torrents overflowed.(T)
But can he also provide bread
or furnish meat for his people?” (U)
21 Therefore, the Lord heard and became furious;
then fire broke out against Jacob,
and anger flared up against Israel(V)
22 because they did not believe God
or rely on his salvation.(W)
23 He gave a command to the clouds above
and opened the doors of heaven.(X)
24 He rained manna for them to eat;
he gave them grain from heaven.(Y)
25 People[b] ate the bread of angels.[c]
He sent them an abundant supply of food.(Z)
26 He made the east wind blow in the skies
and drove the south wind by his might.(AA)
27 He rained meat on them like dust,
and winged birds like the sand of the seas.
28 He made them fall in the camp,
all around the tents.(AB)
29 The people ate and were completely satisfied,
for he gave them what they craved.(AC)
30 Before they had turned from what they craved,
while the food was still in their mouths,
31 God’s anger flared up against them,
and he killed some of their best men.
He struck down Israel’s fit young men.(AD)

Deuteronomy 28

Blessings for Obedience

28 “Now(A) if you faithfully obey the Lord your God(B) and are careful to follow all his commands I am giving you today,(C) the Lord your God will put you far above all the nations of the earth.(D) All these blessings will come and overtake(E) you, because you obey the Lord your God:

You will be blessed in the city
and blessed in the country.(F)
Your offspring[a] will be blessed,
and your land’s produce,
and the offspring of your livestock,
including the young of your herds
and the newborn of your flocks.(G)
Your basket and kneading bowl will be blessed.
You will be blessed when you come in
and blessed when you go out.(H)

“The Lord will cause the enemies who rise up against you to be defeated before you. They will march out against you from one direction but flee from you in seven directions. The Lord will grant you a blessing on your barns and on everything you do;[b](I) he will bless you in the land the Lord your God is giving you.(J) The Lord will establish you as his holy people,(K) as he swore to you, if you obey the commands of the Lord your God and walk in his ways. 10 Then all the peoples of the earth will see that you bear the Lord’s name,(L) and they will stand in awe of you.(M) 11 The Lord will make you prosper abundantly with offspring,[c] the offspring of your livestock, and your land’s produce in the land the Lord swore to your fathers to give you. 12 The Lord will open for you his abundant storehouse,(N) the sky, to give your land rain in its season and to bless all the work of your hands.(O) You will lend to many nations, but you will not borrow. 13 The Lord will make you the head and not the tail;(P) you will only move upward and never downward if you listen to the Lord your God’s commands I am giving you today and are careful to follow them. 14 Do not turn aside to the right or the left from all the things I am commanding you today,(Q) and do not follow other gods to worship them.

Curses for Disobedience

15 “But if you do not obey the Lord your God by carefully following all his commands and statutes I am giving you today, all these curses will come and overtake(R) you:(S)

16 You will be cursed in the city
and cursed in the country.
17 Your basket and kneading bowl will be cursed.
18 Your offspring will be cursed,
and your land’s produce,
the young of your herds,
and the newborn of your flocks.
19 You will be cursed when you come in
and cursed when you go out.

20 The Lord will send against you curses, confusion,(T) and rebuke in everything you do until you are destroyed and quickly perish,(U) because of the wickedness of your actions in abandoning me.(V) 21 The Lord will make pestilence cling to you until he has exterminated you from the land you are entering to possess.(W) 22 The Lord will afflict you with wasting disease, fever, inflammation, burning heat, drought,[d] blight, and mildew;(X) these will pursue you until you perish. 23 The sky above you will be bronze, and the earth beneath you iron. 24 The Lord will turn the rain of your land into falling[e] dust; it will descend on you from the sky until you are destroyed. 25 The Lord will cause you to be defeated before your enemies. You will march out against them from one direction but flee from them in seven directions.(Y) You will be an object of horror(Z) to all the kingdoms of the earth. 26 Your corpses will be food for all the birds of the sky and the wild animals of the earth, with no one to scare them away.(AA)

27 “The Lord will afflict you with the boils of Egypt,(AB) tumors, a festering rash, and scabies, from which you cannot be cured. 28 The Lord will afflict you with madness, blindness, and mental confusion,(AC) 29 so that at noon you will grope as a blind person gropes in the dark.(AD) You will not be successful in anything you do. You will only be oppressed and robbed continually, and no one will help you.(AE) 30 You will become engaged to a woman, but another man will rape her. You will build a house but not live in it.(AF) You will plant a vineyard but not enjoy its fruit. 31 Your ox will be slaughtered before your eyes, but you will not eat any of it. Your donkey will be taken away from you and not returned to you. Your flock will be given to your enemies, and no one will help you. 32 Your sons and daughters will be given to another people, while your eyes grow weary looking for them every day. But you will be powerless to do anything.[f](AG) 33 A people you don’t know will eat your land’s produce and everything you have labored for. You will only be oppressed and crushed continually.(AH) 34 You will be driven mad by what you see. 35 The Lord will afflict you with painful and incurable boils on your knees and thighs—from the sole of your foot to the top of your head.(AI)

36 “The Lord will bring you and your king that you have appointed to a nation neither you nor your fathers have known, and there you will worship other gods, of wood and stone.(AJ) 37 You will become an object of horror, scorn, and ridicule among all the peoples where the Lord will drive you.(AK)

38 “You will sow much seed in the field but harvest little, because locusts will devour it. 39 You will plant and cultivate vineyards but not drink the wine or gather the grapes, because worms will eat them. 40 You will have olive trees throughout your territory but not moisten your skin with oil, because your olives will drop off. 41 You will father sons and daughters, but they will not remain yours, because they will be taken prisoner. 42 Buzzing insects will take possession of all your trees and your land’s produce. 43 The resident alien among you will rise higher and higher above you, while you sink lower and lower. 44 He will lend to you, but you won’t lend to him. He will be the head, and you will be the tail.

45 “All these curses will come, pursue, and overtake you until you are destroyed, since you did not obey the Lord your God and keep the commands and statutes he gave you. 46 These curses will be a sign and a wonder(AL) against you and your descendants forever. 47 Because you didn’t serve the Lord your God with joy and a cheerful heart,(AM) even though you had an abundance of everything, 48 you will serve your enemies the Lord will send against you, in famine, thirst, nakedness, and a lack of everything. He will place an iron yoke(AN) on your neck until he has destroyed you. 49 The Lord will bring a nation from far away, from the ends of the earth,(AO) to swoop down on you like an eagle,(AP) a nation whose language you won’t understand,(AQ) 50 a ruthless nation,[g] showing no respect for the old and not sparing the young. 51 They will eat the offspring of your livestock and your land’s produce until you are destroyed. They will leave you no grain, new wine, fresh oil, young of your herds, or newborn of your flocks until they cause you to perish. 52 They will besiege you within all your city gates until your high and fortified walls, that you trust in, come down throughout your land. They will besiege you within all your city gates throughout the land the Lord your God has given you.

53 “You will eat your offspring,[h] the flesh of your sons and daughters the Lord your God has given you(AR) during the siege and hardship your enemy imposes on you. 54 The most sensitive and refined man among you will look grudgingly[i] at his brother, the wife he embraces,[j] and the rest of his children, 55 refusing to share with any of them his children’s flesh that he will eat because he has nothing left during the siege and hardship your enemy imposes on you in all your towns. 56 The most sensitive and refined woman among you, who would not venture to set the sole of her foot on the ground because of her refinement and sensitivity, will begrudge the husband she embraces, her son, and her daughter, 57 the afterbirth that comes out from between her legs and the children she bears, because she will secretly eat them for lack of anything else during the siege and hardship your enemy imposes on you within your city gates.

58 “If you are not careful to obey all the words of this law, which are written in this scroll, by fearing this glorious and awe-inspiring name—the Lord, your God— 59 he will bring wondrous plagues on you and your descendants, severe and lasting plagues, and terrible and chronic sicknesses. 60 He will afflict you again with all the diseases of Egypt,(AS) which you dreaded, and they will cling to you. 61 The Lord will also afflict you with every sickness and plague not recorded in the book of this law, until you are destroyed. 62 Though you were as numerous as the stars of the sky, you will be left with only a few people, because you did not obey the Lord your God. 63 Just as the Lord was glad to cause you to prosper and to multiply you, so he will also be glad to cause you to perish and to destroy you. You will be ripped out of the land you are entering to possess. 64 Then the Lord will scatter you among all peoples from one end of the earth to the other,(AT) and there you will worship other gods, of wood and stone,(AU) which neither you nor your fathers have known.(AV) 65 You will find no peace among those nations, and there will be no resting place(AW) for the sole of your foot. There the Lord will give you a trembling heart, failing eyes, and a despondent spirit. 66 Your life will hang in doubt before you. You will be in dread night and day, never certain of survival. 67 In the morning you will say, ‘If only it were evening!’ and in the evening you will say, ‘If only it were morning!’—because of the dread you will have in your heart and because of what you will see. 68 The Lord will take you back in ships to Egypt by a route that I said you would never see again.(AX) There you will sell yourselves to your enemies as male and female slaves, but no one will buy you.”

Luke 11:14-36

A House Divided

14 Now(A) he was driving out a demon(B) that was mute.(C) When the demon came out, the man who had been mute spoke, and the crowds were amazed. 15 But some of them said, “He drives out demons by Beelzebul,(D) the ruler(E) of the demons.”(F) 16 And others, as a test,(G) were demanding of him a sign(H) from heaven.

17 Knowing their thoughts,(I) he told them, “Every kingdom divided(J) against itself is headed for destruction, and a house divided against itself falls. 18 If Satan(K) also is divided against himself, how will his kingdom(L) stand? For you say I drive out demons by Beelzebul. 19 And if I drive out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your sons(M) drive them out? For this reason they will be your judges. 20 If I drive out demons by the finger of God,(N) then the kingdom of God(O) has come upon you. 21 When a strong man, fully armed, guards his estate, his possessions are secure. 22 But when one stronger than he attacks and overpowers(P) him, he takes from him all his weapons[a](Q) he trusted(R) in, and divides up his plunder.(S) 23 Anyone who is not with me is against me,(T) and anyone who does not gather with me scatters.

An Unclean Spirit’s Return

24 “When(U) an unclean spirit(V) comes out of a person, it roams through waterless places looking for rest,(W) and not finding rest, it then[b] says, ‘I’ll go back to my house that I came from.’ 25 Returning, it finds the house swept and put in order. 26 Then it goes and brings seven other spirits(X) more evil than itself, and they enter and settle down there. As a result, that person’s last condition is worse than the first.”(Y)

True Blessedness

27 As he was saying these things, a woman from the crowd(Z) raised her voice and said to him, “Blessed is the womb that bore you and the one who nursed you!” (AA)

28 He said, “Rather, blessed are those who hear the word of God(AB) and keep it.”(AC)

The Sign of Jonah

29 As the crowds were increasing, he began saying: “This generation(AD) is an evil generation.(AE) It demands a sign,(AF) but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.[c](AG) 30 For just as Jonah became a sign to the people of Nineveh, so also the Son of Man(AH) will be to this generation. 31 The queen of the south(AI) will rise up at the judgment(AJ) with the men of this generation and condemn(AK) them, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon,(AL) and look—something greater than Solomon is here. 32 The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, because they repented at Jonah’s preaching, and look—something greater than Jonah is here.

The Lamp of the Body

33 “No(AM) one lights a lamp(AN) and puts it in the cellar or under a basket,[d] but on a lampstand, so that those who come in may see its light. 34 Your eye is the lamp of the body.(AO) When your eye is healthy, your whole body is also full of light. But when it is bad,(AP) your body is also full of darkness. 35 Take care, then, that the light in you is not darkness. 36 If, therefore, your whole body is full of light, with no part of it in darkness, it will be entirely illuminated, as when a lamp shines its light on you.”

Psalm 77

Psalm 77

Confidence in a Time of Crisis

For the choir director: according to Jeduthun. Of Asaph.(A) A psalm.

I cry aloud to God,
aloud to God, and he will hear me.(B)
I sought the Lord in my day of trouble.
My hands were continually lifted up
all night long;
I refused to be comforted.(C)
I think of God; I groan;
I meditate; my spirit becomes weak.(D)Selah

You have kept me from closing my eyes;
I am troubled and cannot speak.(E)
I consider days of old,
years long past.(F)
At night I remember my music;
I meditate in my heart, and my spirit ponders.(G)

“Will the Lord reject forever
and never again show favor?(H)
Has his faithful love ceased forever?
Is his promise at an end for all generations?(I)
Has God forgotten to be gracious?
Has he in anger withheld his compassion?” (J)Selah

10 So I say, “I am grieved
that the right hand of the Most High has changed.”[a](K)
11 I will remember the Lord’s works;
yes, I will remember your ancient wonders.(L)
12 I will reflect on all you have done
and meditate on your actions.(M)

13 God, your way is holy.
What god is great like God?(N)
14 You are the God who works wonders;
you revealed your strength among the peoples.(O)
15 With power you redeemed your people,
the descendants of Jacob and Joseph.(P)Selah

16 The water saw you, God.
The water saw you; it trembled.
Even the depths shook.(Q)
17 The clouds poured down water.
The storm clouds thundered;
your arrows flashed back and forth.(R)
18 The sound of your thunder was in the whirlwind;
lightning lit up the world.(S)
The earth shook and quaked.(T)
19 Your way went through the sea
and your path through the vast water,
but your footprints were unseen.(U)
20 You led your people like a flock(V)
by the hand of Moses and Aaron.(W)

Deuteronomy 26-27

Giving the Firstfruits

26 “When you enter the land the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance,(A) and you take possession of it and live in it, take some of the first of all the land’s produce that you harvest from the land the Lord your God is giving you and put it in a basket. Then go to the place where the Lord your God chooses to have his name dwell.(B) When you come before the priest who is serving at that time, say to him, ‘Today I declare to the Lord your[a] God that I have entered the land the Lord swore to our fathers to give us.’

“Then the priest will take the basket from you and place it before the altar of the Lord your God. You are to respond by saying in the presence of the Lord your God:

My father was a wandering Aramean.(C) He went down to Egypt with a few people and resided there as an alien.(D) There he became a great, powerful, and populous nation. But the Egyptians mistreated and oppressed us, and forced us to do hard labor. So we called out to the Lord, the God of our fathers, and the Lord heard our cry and saw our misery, hardship, and oppression.(E) Then the Lord brought us out of Egypt with a strong hand and an outstretched arm, with terrifying power, and with signs and wonders. He led us to this place and gave us this land, a land flowing with milk and honey.(F) 10 I have now brought the first of the land’s produce that you, Lord, have given me.

You will then place the container before the Lord your God and bow down to him. 11 You, the Levites, and the resident aliens among you will rejoice(G) in all the good things the Lord your God has given you and your household.

The Tenth in the Third Year

12 “When you have finished paying all the tenth of your produce in the third year,(H) the year of the tenth, you are to give it to the Levites, resident aliens, fatherless children and widows, so that they may eat in your towns and be satisfied. 13 Then you will say in the presence of the Lord your God:

I have taken the consecrated portion out of my house; I have also given it to the Levites, resident aliens, fatherless children, and widows, according to all the commands you gave me. I have not violated or forgotten your commands. 14 I have not eaten any of it while in mourning, or removed any of it while unclean, or offered any of it for the dead.(I) I have obeyed the Lord my God; I have done all you commanded me. 15 Look down from your holy dwelling, from heaven, and bless your people Israel and the land you have given us as you swore to our fathers, a land flowing with milk and honey.

Covenant Summary

16 “The Lord your God is commanding you this day to follow these statutes and ordinances. Follow them carefully with all your heart and all your soul. 17 Today you have affirmed that the Lord is your God and that you will walk in his ways, keep his statutes, commands, and ordinances, and obey him. 18 And today the Lord has affirmed that you are his own possession as he promised you, that you are to keep all his commands, 19 that he will elevate you to praise, fame, and glory above all the nations he has made, and that you will be a holy people(J) to the Lord your God as he promised.”

The Law Written on Stones

27 Moses and the elders of Israel commanded the people, “Keep every command I am giving you today. When you cross the Jordan into the land the Lord your God is giving you, set up large stones and cover them with plaster.(K) Write all the words of this law on the stones after you cross to enter the land the Lord your God is giving you, a land flowing with milk and honey,(L) as the Lord, the God of your fathers, has promised you. When you have crossed the Jordan, you are to set up these stones on Mount Ebal, as I am commanding you today, and you are to cover them with plaster. Build an altar of stones there to the Lord your God—do not use any iron tool on them.(M) Use uncut stones to build the altar of the Lord your God and offer burnt offerings to the Lord your God on it. There you are to sacrifice fellowship offerings, eat, and rejoice in the presence of the Lord your God. Write clearly all the words of this law on the plastered stones.”

The Covenant Curses

Moses and the Levitical priests spoke to all Israel, “Be silent, Israel, and listen! This day you have become the people of the Lord your God. 10 Obey the Lord your God and follow his commands and statutes I am giving you today.”

11 On that day Moses commanded the people, 12 “When you have crossed the Jordan, these tribes will stand on Mount Gerizim to bless the people: Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Joseph, and Benjamin. 13 And these tribes will stand on Mount Ebal to deliver the curse: Reuben, Gad, Asher, Zebulun, Dan, and Naphtali.(N) 14 The Levites will proclaim in a loud voice to every Israelite:

15 ‘The person who makes a carved idol or cast image, which is detestable to the Lord, the work of a craftsman, and sets it up in secret is cursed.’

And all the people will reply, ‘Amen!’

16 ‘The one who dishonors his father or mother is cursed.’

And all the people will say, ‘Amen!’

17 ‘The one who moves his neighbor’s boundary marker is cursed.’

And all the people will say, ‘Amen!’

18 ‘The one who leads a blind person astray on the road is cursed.’

And all the people will say, ‘Amen!’

19 ‘The one who denies justice to a resident alien, a fatherless child, or a widow is cursed.’

And all the people will say, ‘Amen!’

20 ‘The one who sleeps with his father’s wife is cursed, for he has violated his father’s marriage bed.’[b]

And all the people will say, ‘Amen!’

21 ‘The one who has sexual intercourse with any animal is cursed.’

And all the people will say, ‘Amen!’

22 ‘The one who sleeps with his sister, whether his father’s daughter or his mother’s daughter is cursed.’

And all the people will say, ‘Amen!’

23 ‘The one who sleeps with his mother-in-law is cursed.’

And all the people will say, ‘Amen!’

24 ‘The one who secretly kills his neighbor is cursed.’

And all the people will say, ‘Amen!’

25 ‘The one who accepts a bribe to kill an innocent person is cursed.’

And all the people will say, ‘Amen!’

26 ‘Anyone who does not put the words of this law into practice is cursed.’

And all the people will say, ‘Amen!’

Luke 10:38-11:13

Martha and Mary

38 While they were traveling, he entered a village, and a woman named Martha(A) welcomed him into her home.[a] 39 She had a sister named Mary, who also sat at the Lord’s[b] feet(B) and was listening to what he said.[c] 40 But Martha was distracted by her many tasks, and she came up and asked, “Lord, don’t you care(C) that my sister has left me to serve alone? So tell her to give me a hand.”[d](D)

41 The Lord[e] answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and upset about many things,(E) 42 but one thing is necessary.[f](F) Mary has made the right choice,[g] and it will not be taken away from her.”

The Lord’s Prayer

11 He was praying(G) in a certain place, and when he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John also taught his disciples.”(H)

He said to them, “Whenever you pray, say,(I)

Father,[h](J)
your name(K) be honored as holy.(L)
Your kingdom come.[i](M)
Give us each day our daily bread.[j](N)
And forgive us our sins,(O)
for we ourselves also forgive everyone
in debt to us.[k](P)
And do not bring us into temptation.”[l](Q)

Ask, Search, Knock

He also said to them: “Suppose one of you[m] has a friend and goes to him at midnight and says to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves of bread, because a friend of mine on a journey has come to me, and I don’t have anything to offer him.’ Then he will answer from inside and say, ‘Don’t bother me! The door is already locked, and my children and I have gone to bed. I can’t get up to give you anything.’ I tell you, even though he won’t get up and give him anything because he is his friend, yet because of his friend’s shameless boldness,[n] he will get up and give him as much as he needs.(R)

“So(S) I say to you, ask,(T) and it will be given to you. Seek,(U) and you will find. Knock,(V) and the door will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. 11 What father among you, if his son[o] asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead of a fish? 12 Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? 13 If you then, who are evil,(W) know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father(X) give the Holy Spirit(Y) to those who ask him?”

Psalm 76

God, the Powerful Judge

For the choir director: with stringed instruments. A psalm of Asaph.(A) A song.

God is known in Judah;
his name is great in Israel.(B)
His tent is in Salem,
his dwelling place in Zion.(C)
There he shatters the bow’s flaming arrows,
the shield, the sword, and the weapons of war.(D)Selah

You are resplendent and majestic
coming down from the mountains of prey.(E)
The brave-hearted have been plundered;
they have slipped into their final sleep.
None of the warriors was able to lift a hand.(F)
At your rebuke, God of Jacob,
both chariot and horse lay still.(G)

And you—you are to be feared.[a]
When you are angry,
who can stand before you?(H)
From heaven you pronounced judgment.
The earth feared and grew quiet(I)
when God rose up to judge
and to save all the lowly of the earth.(J)Selah
10 Even human wrath will praise you;
you will clothe yourself
with the wrath that remains.[b](K)

11 Make and keep your vows
to the Lord your God;(L)
let all who are around him bring tribute
to the awe-inspiring one.[c](M)
12 He humbles the spirit of leaders;
he is feared by the kings of the earth.(N)

15 A fool’s way is right in his own eyes,(A)
but whoever listens to counsel is wise.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Wednesday April 3, 2019 (NIV)

Deuteronomy 23-25

Exclusion and Inclusion

23 “No man whose testicles have been crushed[a] or whose penis has been cut off may enter the Lord’s assembly. No one of illegitimate birth may enter the Lord’s assembly; none of his descendants, even to the tenth generation, may enter the Lord’s assembly. No Ammonite or Moabite may enter the Lord’s assembly;(A) none of their descendants, even to the tenth generation, may ever enter the Lord’s assembly. This is because they did not meet you with food and water on the journey after you came out of Egypt, and because Balaam son of Beor from Pethor in Aram-naharaim was hired to curse you.(B) Yet the Lord your God would not listen to Balaam, but he turned the curse into a blessing for you because the Lord your God loves(C) you.(D) Never pursue their welfare or prosperity as long as you live. Do not despise an Edomite, because he is your brother. Do not despise an Egyptian, because you were a resident alien in his land. The children born to them in the third generation may enter the Lord’s assembly.

Cleanliness of the Camp

“When you are encamped against your enemies, be careful to avoid anything offensive. 10 If there is a man among you who is unclean because of a bodily emission during the night, he must go outside the camp; he may not come anywhere inside the camp. 11 When evening approaches, he is to wash with water, and when the sun sets he may come inside the camp.(E) 12 You are to have a place outside the camp and go there to relieve yourself. 13 You are to have a digging tool in your equipment; when you relieve yourself, dig a hole with it and cover up your excrement. 14 For the Lord your God walks throughout your camp to protect you and deliver your enemies to you; so your encampments must be holy. He must not see anything indecent among you or he will turn away from you.

Fugitive Slaves

15 “Do not return a slave to his master when he has escaped from his master to you. 16 Let him live among you wherever he wants within your city gates. Do not mistreat him.

Cult Prostitution Forbidden

17 “No Israelite woman is to be a cult prostitute, and no Israelite man is to be a cult prostitute. 18 Do not bring a female prostitute’s wages or a male prostitute’s[b] earnings into the house of the Lord your God to fulfill any vow, because both are detestable to the Lord your God.

Interest on Loans

19 “Do not charge your brother interest on silver, food, or anything that can earn interest. 20 You may charge a foreigner interest, but you must not charge your brother Israelite interest, so that the Lord your God may bless you in everything you do[c] in the land you are entering to possess.(F)

Keeping Vows

21 “If you make a vow to the Lord your God, do not be slow to keep it, because he will require it of you, and it will be counted against you as sin. 22 But if you refrain from making a vow, it will not be counted against you as sin. 23 Be careful to do whatever comes from your lips, because you have freely vowed what you promised[d] to the Lord your God.(G)

Neighbor’s Crops

24 “When you enter your neighbor’s vineyard, you may eat as many grapes as you want until you are full, but do not put any in your container. 25 When you enter your neighbor’s standing grain, you may pluck heads of grain with your hand, but do not put a sickle to your neighbor’s grain.

Marriage and Divorce Laws

24 “If a man marries a woman, but she becomes displeasing to him[e] because he finds something indecent about her, he may write her a divorce certificate, hand it to her, and send her away from his house.(H) If after leaving his house she goes and becomes another man’s wife, and the second man hates her, writes her a divorce certificate, hands it to her, and sends her away from his house or if he dies, the first husband who sent her away may not marry her again after she has been defiled, because that would be detestable to the Lord. You must not bring guilt on the land the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance.(I)

“When a man takes a bride, he must not go out with the army or be liable for any duty. He is free to stay at home for one year, so that he can bring joy to the wife he has married.

Safeguarding Life

“Do not take a pair of grindstones or even the upper millstone as security for a debt, because that is like taking a life as security.

“If a man is discovered kidnapping(J) one of his Israelite brothers, whether he treats him as a slave or sells him, the kidnapper must die. You must purge the evil from you.

“Be careful with a person who has a case of serious skin disease, following carefully everything the Levitical priests instruct you to do. Be careful to do as I have commanded them. Remember what the Lord your God did to Miriam on the journey after you left Egypt.(K)

Consideration for People in Need

10 “When you make a loan of any kind to your neighbor, do not enter his house to collect what he offers as security. 11 Stand outside while the man you are making the loan to brings the security out to you. 12 If he is a poor man, do not sleep with the garment he has given as security. 13 Be sure to return it[f] to him at sunset. Then he will sleep in it and bless you, and this will be counted as righteousness to you before the Lord your God.(L)

14 “Do not oppress a hired worker who is poor and needy, whether one of your Israelite brothers or one of the resident aliens in a town[g] in your land. 15 You are to pay him his wages each day before the sun sets, because he is poor and depends on them.(M) Otherwise he will cry out to the Lord against you, and you will be held guilty.

16 “Fathers are not to be put to death for their children, and children are not to be put to death for their fathers; each person will be put to death for his own sin.(N) 17 Do not deny justice to a resident alien or fatherless child, and do not take a widow’s garment as security. 18 Remember that you were a slave in Egypt, and the Lord your God redeemed(O) you from there. Therefore I am commanding you to do this.(P)

19 “When you reap the harvest in your field, and you forget a sheaf in the field, do not go back to get it. It is to be left for the resident alien, the fatherless, and the widow, so that the Lord your God may bless you in all the work of your hands.(Q) 20 When you knock down the fruit from your olive tree, do not go over the branches again. What remains will be for the resident alien, the fatherless, and the widow. 21 When you gather the grapes of your vineyard, do not glean what is left. What remains will be for the resident alien, the fatherless, and the widow. 22 Remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt. Therefore I am commanding you to do this.(R)

Fairness and Mercy

25 “If there is a dispute between men, they are to go to court, and the judges will hear their case. They will clear the innocent and condemn the guilty. If the guilty party deserves to be flogged, the judge will make him lie down and be flogged in his presence with the number of lashes appropriate for his crime. He may be flogged with forty lashes, but no more. Otherwise, if he is flogged with more lashes than these, your brother will be degraded in your sight.

“Do not muzzle an ox while it treads out grain.(S)

Preserving the Family Line

“When brothers live on the same property[h] and one of them dies without a son, the wife of the dead man may not marry a stranger outside the family. Her brother-in-law is to take her as his wife, have sexual relations with her, and perform the duty of a brother-in-law for her. The first son she bears will carry on the name of the dead brother, so his name will not be blotted out from Israel.(T) But if the man doesn’t want to marry his sister-in-law, she is to go to the elders at the city gate(U) and say, ‘My brother-in-law refuses to preserve his brother’s name in Israel. He isn’t willing to perform the duty of a brother-in-law for me.’ The elders of his city will summon him and speak with him. If he persists and says, ‘I don’t want to marry her,’ then his sister-in-law will go up to him in the sight of the elders, remove his sandal from his foot, and spit in his face. Then she will declare, ‘This is what is done to a man who will not build up his brother’s house.’ 10 And his family name in Israel will be ‘The house of the man whose sandal was removed.’(V)

11 “If two men are fighting with each other, and the wife of one steps in to rescue her husband from the one striking him, and she puts out her hand and grabs his genitals, 12 you are to cut off her hand. Do not show pity.

Honest Weights and Measures

13 “Do not have differing weights[i] in your bag, one heavy and one light.(W) 14 Do not have differing dry measures in your house, a larger and a smaller. 15 You must have a full and honest weight, a full and honest dry measure, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you. 16 For everyone who does such things and acts unfairly is detestable to the Lord your God.(X)

Revenge on the Amalekites

17 “Remember what the Amalekites did to you on the journey after you left Egypt.(Y) 18 They met you along the way and attacked all your stragglers from behind when you were tired and weary. They did not fear God. 19 When the Lord your God gives you rest(Z) from all the enemies around you in the land the Lord your God is giving you to possess as an inheritance,(AA) blot out the memory of Amalek under heaven. Do not forget.(AB)

Luke 10:13-37

Unrepentant Towns

13 “Woe(A) to you,(B) Chorazin!(C) Woe to you, Bethsaida!(D) For if the miracles(E) that were done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon,(F) they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes.(G) 14 But it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment(H) than for you. 15 And you, Capernaum,(I) will you be exalted to heaven?(J) No, you will go down to Hades.(K) 16 Whoever listens to you listens to me.(L) Whoever rejects you rejects me.(M) And whoever rejects me rejects the one who sent me.”(N)

The Return of the Seventy-Two

17 The seventy-two[a](O) returned with joy, saying,(P) “Lord, even the demons(Q) submit to us in your name.”(R)

18 He said to them, “I watched Satan(S) fall from heaven like lightning.(T) 19 Look, I have given you the authority(U) to trample(V) on snakes(W) and scorpions(X) and over all the power of the enemy; (Y) nothing at all will harm you.(Z) 20 However, don’t rejoice that[b] the spirits (AA) submit to you,(AB) but rejoice that your names are written(AC) in heaven.”

The Son Reveals the Father

21 At that time(AD) he[c] rejoiced in the Holy[d] Spirit(AE) and said, “I praise[e] you, Father,(AF) Lord of heaven and earth,(AG) because you have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent(AH) and revealed them to infants.(AI) Yes, Father, because this was your good pleasure.[f](AJ) 22 All things have[g] been entrusted to me by my Father. No one knows who the Son is except the Father, and who the Father is except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son desires[h] to reveal him.”(AK)

23 Then turning to his disciples he said privately, “Blessed are the eyes that see the things you see! 24 For I tell you that many prophets and kings wanted to see the things you see but didn’t see them; to hear the things you hear but didn’t hear them.”(AL)

The Parable of the Good Samaritan

25 Then(AM) an expert in the law(AN) stood up to test(AO) him, saying, “Teacher,(AP) what must I do to inherit eternal life?” (AQ)

26 “What is written in the law?” he asked him. “How do you read it?”

27 He answered, “Love the Lord your God(AR) with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind,”(AS) and “your neighbor as yourself.”(AT)(AU)

28 “You’ve answered correctly,” he told him. “Do this and you will live.”(AV)

29 But wanting to justify himself,(AW) he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” (AX)

30 Jesus took up the question and said: “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho and fell into the hands of robbers. They stripped him, beat him up, and fled, leaving him half dead. 31 A priest happened to be going down that road. When he saw him, he passed by on the other side. 32 In the same way, a Levite, when he arrived at the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a Samaritan(AY) on his journey came up to him, and when he saw the man, he had compassion.(AZ) 34 He went over to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on olive oil(BA) and wine. Then he put him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. 35 The next day[i] he took out two denarii,[j] gave them to the innkeeper, and said, ‘Take care of him. When I come back I’ll reimburse you for whatever extra you spend.’

36 “Which of these three do you think proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of the robbers?”

37 “The one who showed mercy(BB) to him,” he said.

Then Jesus told him, “Go and do the same.”

God Judges the Wicked

For the choir director: “Do Not Destroy.” A psalm of Asaph.(A) A song.

We give thanks to you, God;
we give thanks to you, for your name is near.
People tell about your wondrous works.(B)

“When I choose a time,
I will judge fairly.(C)
When the earth and all its inhabitants shake,
I am the one who steadies its pillars.(D)Selah
I say to the boastful, ‘Do not boast,’
and to the wicked, ‘Do not lift up your horn.(E)
Do not lift up your horn against heaven[a]
or speak arrogantly.’”(F)

Exaltation does not come
from the east, the west, or the desert,
for God is the Judge:
He brings down one and exalts another.(G)
For there is a cup in the Lord’s hand,
full of wine blended with spices, and he pours from it.
All the wicked of the earth will drink,
draining it to the dregs.(H)

As for me, I will tell about him forever;
I will sing praise to the God of Jacob.(I)

10 “I will cut off all the horns of the wicked,(J)
but the horns of the righteous will be lifted up.”(K)

Deuteronomy 21-22

Unsolved Murders

21 “If a murder victim is found lying in a field in the land the Lord your God is giving you to possess, and it is not known who killed him, your elders and judges are to come out and measure the distance from the victim to the nearby cities. The elders of the city nearest to the victim are to get a young cow that has not been yoked or used for work. The elders of that city will bring the cow down to a continually flowing stream, to a place not tilled or sown, and they will break its neck there by the stream. Then the priests, the sons of Levi, will come forward, for the Lord your God has chosen them to serve him and pronounce blessings in his name, and they are to give a ruling in[a] every dispute and case of assault. All the elders of the city nearest to the victim will wash their hands by the stream over the young cow whose neck has been broken. They will declare, ‘Our hands did not shed this blood; our eyes did not see it. Lord, wipe away the guilt of your people Israel whom you redeemed, and do not hold the shedding of innocent blood against them.’ Then the responsibility for bloodshed will be wiped away from them. You must purge from yourselves the guilt of shedding innocent blood, for you will be doing what is right in the Lord’s sight.

Fair Treatment of Captured Women

10 “When you go to war against your enemies and the Lord your God hands them over to you and you take some of them prisoner, and 11 if you see a beautiful woman among the captives, desire her, and want to take her as your wife, 12 you are to bring her into your house. She is to shave her head, trim her nails, 13 remove the clothes she was wearing when she was taken prisoner, live in your house, and mourn for her father and mother a full month. After that, you may have sexual relations with her and be her husband, and she will be your wife. 14 Then if you are not satisfied with her, you are to let her go where she wants, but you must not sell her or treat her as merchandise,[b] because you have humiliated her.

The Right of the Firstborn

15 “If a man has two wives, one loved and the other unloved, and both the loved and the unloved bear him sons, and if the unloved wife has the firstborn son, 16 when that man gives what he has to his sons as an inheritance, he is not to show favoritism to the son of the loved wife as his firstborn over the firstborn of the unloved wife. 17 He must acknowledge the firstborn, the son of the unloved wife, by giving him two shares[c][d] of his estate, for he is the firstfruits of his virility; he has the rights of the firstborn.(A)

A Rebellious Son

18 “If a man has a stubborn and rebellious son who does not obey his father or mother and doesn’t listen to them even after they discipline him, 19 his father and mother are to take hold of him and bring him to the elders of his city, to the gate(B) of his hometown. 20 They will say to the elders of his city, ‘This son of ours is stubborn and rebellious; he doesn’t obey us. He’s a glutton and a drunkard.’ 21 Then all the men of his city will stone him to death.(C) You must purge the evil from you, and all Israel will hear and be afraid.

Display of Executed People

22 “If anyone is found guilty of an offense deserving the death penalty and is executed, and you hang his body on a tree, 23 you are not to leave his corpse on the tree overnight but are to bury him that day, for anyone hung on a tree is under God’s curse.(D) You must not defile the land the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance.(E)

Caring for Your Brother’s Property

22 “If you see your brother Israelite’s ox or sheep straying, do not ignore it; make sure you return it to your brother. If your brother does not live near you or you don’t know him, you are to bring the animal to your home to remain with you until your brother comes looking for it; then you can return it to him. Do the same for his donkey, his garment, or anything your brother has lost and you have found. You must not ignore it.(F) If you see your brother’s donkey or ox fallen down on the road, do not ignore it; help him lift it up.

Preserving Natural Distinctions

“A woman is not to wear male clothing, and a man is not to put on a woman’s garment, for everyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord your God.

“If you come across a bird’s nest with chicks or eggs, either in a tree or on the ground along the road, and the mother is sitting on the chicks or eggs, do not take the mother along with the young. You may take the young for yourself, but be sure to let the mother go free, so that you may prosper and live long. If you build a new house, make a railing around your roof, so that you don’t bring bloodguilt on your house if someone falls from it. Do not plant your vineyard with two types of seed; otherwise, the entire harvest, both the crop you plant and the produce of the vineyard, will be defiled. 10 Do not plow with an ox and a donkey together. 11 Do not wear clothes made of both wool and linen.(G) 12 Make tassels on the four corners of the outer garment you wear.(H)

Violations of Proper Sexual Conduct

13 “If a man marries a woman, has sexual relations with her, and comes to hate her, 14 and accuses her of shameful conduct, and gives her a bad name, saying, ‘I married this woman and was intimate with her, but I didn’t find any evidence of her virginity,’ 15 the young woman’s father and mother will take the evidence of her virginity and bring it to the city elders at the city gate.(I) 16 The young woman’s father will say to the elders, ‘I gave my daughter to this man as a wife, but he hates her. 17 He has accused her of shameful conduct, saying: “I didn’t find any evidence of your daughter’s virginity,” but here is the evidence of my daughter’s virginity.’ They will spread out the cloth before the city elders. 18 Then the elders of that city will take the man and punish him.(J) 19 They will also fine him a hundred silver shekels and give them to the young woman’s father, because that man gave an Israelite virgin a bad name. She will remain his wife; he cannot divorce her as long as he lives. 20 But if this accusation is true and no evidence of the young woman’s virginity is found, 21 they will bring the woman to the door of her father’s house, and the men of her city will stone her to death. For she has committed an outrage in Israel by being promiscuous while living in her father’s house. You must purge the evil from you.

22 “If a man is discovered having sexual relations with another man’s wife, both the man who had sex with the woman and the woman must die. You must purge the evil from Israel. 23 If there is a young woman who is a virgin engaged to a man, and another man encounters her in the city and sleeps with her, 24 take the two of them out to the gate of that city and stone them to death—the young woman because she did not cry out in the city and the man because he has violated his neighbor’s fiancée. You must purge the evil from you. 25 But if the man encounters an engaged woman in the open country, and he seizes and rapes her, only the man who raped her must die. 26 Do nothing to the young woman, because she is not guilty of an offense deserving death. This case is just like one in which a man attacks his neighbor and murders him. 27 When he found her in the field, the engaged woman cried out, but there was no one to rescue her. 28 If a man encounters a young woman, a virgin who is not engaged, takes hold of her and rapes her, and they are discovered, 29 the man who raped her is to give the young woman’s father fifty silver shekels, and she will become his wife because he violated her.(K) He cannot divorce her as long as he lives.

30 “A man is not to marry his father’s wife; he must not violate his father’s marriage bed.[e](L)

Luke 9:51-10:12

The Journey to Jerusalem

51 When the days were coming to a close for him to be taken up,(A) he determined[a](B) to journey to Jerusalem.(C) 52 He sent messengers ahead of himself,(D) and on the way they entered a village of the Samaritans(E) to make preparations for him. 53 But they did not welcome him, because he determined to journey to Jerusalem.(F) 54 When the disciples James and John saw this, they said, “Lord, do you want us to call down fire from heaven to consume them?” [b](G)

55 But he turned and rebuked them,[c] 56 and they went to another village.

Following Jesus

57 As they were traveling on the road someone said to him,(H) “I will follow you wherever you go.”

58 Jesus told him, “Foxes have dens, and birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.” 59 Then he said to another, “Follow me.”

“Lord,” he said, “first let me go bury my father.”

60 But he told him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and spread the news of the kingdom of God.”(I)

61 Another said, “I will follow you, Lord, but first let me go and say good-bye to those at my house.”(J)

62 But Jesus said to him, “No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.”

Sending Out the Seventy-Two

10 After this, the Lord appointed seventy-two[d] others, and he sent them ahead of him in pairs to every town and place where he himself was about to go. He told them,(K) “The harvest(L) is abundant, but the workers(M) are few. Therefore, pray to the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into his harvest.(N) Now go; I’m sending you out like lambs among wolves.(O) Don’t carry a money-bag,(P) traveling bag,(Q) or sandals; (R) don’t greet anyone along the road. Whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace(S) to this household.’ If a person of peace is there, your peace(T) will rest on him; but if not, it will return to you. Remain in the same house, eating and drinking what they offer, for the worker is worthy of his wages.(U) Don’t move from house to house. When you enter any town, and they welcome you, eat the things set before you.(V) Heal the sick(W) who are there, and tell them, ‘The kingdom of God(X) has come near(Y) you.’ 10 When you enter any town, and they don’t welcome you, go out into its streets and say, 11 ‘We are wiping off even the dust of your town that clings to our feet as a witness against you.(Z) Know this for certain: The kingdom of God has come near.’ 12 I tell you, on that day(AA) it will be more tolerable for Sodom(AB) than for that town.(AC)

Prayer for Israel

A Maskil of Asaph.(A)

Why have you rejected us forever, God?
Why does your anger burn
against the sheep of your pasture?(B)
Remember your congregation,
which you purchased long ago
and redeemed as the tribe for your own possession.(C)
Remember Mount Zion where you dwell.(D)
Make your way[a] to the perpetual ruins,
to all that the enemy has destroyed in the sanctuary.(E)
Your adversaries roared in the meeting place
where you met with us.[b]
They set up their emblems as signs.(F)
It was like men in a thicket of trees,
wielding axes,(G)
then smashing all the carvings
with hatchets and picks.(H)
They set your sanctuary on fire;
they utterly[c] desecrated
the dwelling place of your name.(I)
They said in their hearts,
“Let us oppress them relentlessly.”
They burned every place throughout the land
where God met with us.[d](J)
There are no signs for us to see.
There is no longer a prophet.
And none of us knows how long this will last.(K)
10 God, how long will the enemy mock?
Will the foe insult your name forever?(L)
11 Why do you hold back your hand?
Stretch out[e] your right hand and destroy them!(M)

12 God my King is from ancient times,
performing saving acts on the earth.(N)
13 You divided the sea with your strength;
you smashed the heads of the sea monsters in the water;(O)
14 you crushed the heads of Leviathan;
you fed him to the creatures of the desert.(P)
15 You opened up springs and streams;(Q)
you dried up ever-flowing rivers.(R)
16 The day is yours, also the night;
you established the moon and the sun.(S)
17 You set all the boundaries of the earth;
you made summer and winter.(T)

18 Remember this: the enemy has mocked the Lord,
and a foolish people has insulted your name.(U)
19 Do not give to beasts the life of your dove;[f]
do not forget the lives of your poor people forever.(V)
20 Consider the covenant,(W)
for the dark places of the land are full of violence.(X)
21 Do not let the oppressed turn away in shame;
let the poor and needy praise your name.(Y)
22 Rise up, God, champion your cause!(Z)

Deuteronomy 18-20

Provisions for the Levites

18 “The Levitical priests, the whole tribe of Levi, will have no portion or inheritance with Israel. They will eat the Lord’s fire offerings; that is their[a][b] inheritance. Although Levi has no inheritance among his brothers, the Lord is his inheritance, as he promised him.(A) This is the priests’ share from the people who offer a sacrifice, whether it is an ox, a sheep, or a goat; the priests are to be given the shoulder, jaws, and stomach. You are to give him the firstfruits of your grain, new wine, and fresh oil,(B) and the first sheared wool of your flock. For the Lord your God has chosen him and his sons from all your tribes to stand and minister in his name from now on.[c] When a Levite leaves one of your towns in Israel where he was staying and wants to go to the place the Lord chooses, he may serve in the name of the Lord his God like all his fellow Levites who minister there in the presence of the Lord. They will eat equal portions besides what he has received from the sale of the family estate.[d](C)

Occult Practices versus Prophetic Revelation

“When you enter the land the Lord your God is giving you, do not imitate the detestable customs of those nations.(D) 10 No one among you is to sacrifice his son or daughter in the fire,[e](E) practice divination, tell fortunes, interpret omens, practice sorcery, 11 cast spells, consult a medium or a spiritist, or inquire of the dead.(F) 12 Everyone who does these acts is detestable to the Lord, and the Lord your God is driving out the nations before you because of these detestable acts. 13 You must be blameless before the Lord your God. 14 Though these nations you are about to drive out listen to fortune-tellers and diviners, the Lord your God has not permitted you to do this.

15 “The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your own brothers.(G) You must listen to him. 16 This is what you requested from the Lord your God at Horeb on the day of the assembly when you said, ‘Let us not continue to hear the voice of the Lord our God or see this great fire any longer, so that we will not die!’ (H) 17 Then the Lord said to me, ‘They have spoken well. 18 I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brothers. I will put my words in his mouth, and he will tell them everything I command him. 19 I will hold accountable whoever does not listen to my words that he speaks in my name.(I) 20 But the prophet who presumes to speak a message in my name that I have not commanded him to speak, or who speaks in the name of other gods—that prophet must die.’ 21 You may say to yourself, ‘How can we recognize a message the Lord has not spoken?’ 22 When a prophet speaks in the Lord’s name, and the message does not come true or is not fulfilled, that is a message the Lord has not spoken. The prophet has spoken it presumptuously. Do not be afraid of him.

Cities of Refuge

19 “When the Lord your God annihilates the nations whose land he is giving you,(J) so that you drive them out and live in their cities and houses, you are to set apart three cities for yourselves within the land the Lord your God is giving you to possess.(K) You are to determine the distances[f] and divide the land the Lord your God is granting you as an inheritance into three regions, so that anyone who commits manslaughter can flee to these cities.[g]

“Here is the law concerning a case of someone who kills a person and flees there to save his life, having killed his neighbor accidentally without previously hating him: If, for example, he goes into the forest with his neighbor to cut timber, and his hand swings the ax to chop down a tree, but the blade flies off the handle and strikes his neighbor so that he dies, that person may flee to one of these cities and live. Otherwise, the avenger of blood in the heat of his anger[h] might pursue the one who committed manslaughter, overtake him because the distance is great, and strike him dead. Yet he did not deserve to die,[i] since he did not previously hate his neighbor. This is why I am commanding you to set apart three cities for yourselves. If the Lord your God enlarges your territory as he swore to your fathers, and gives you all the land he promised to give them— provided you keep every one of these commands I am giving you today and follow them, loving the Lord your God and walking in his ways at all times—you are to add three more cities to these three. 10 In this way, innocent blood will not be shed, and you will not become guilty of bloodshed in the land the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance.(L) 11 But if someone hates his neighbor, lies in ambush for him, attacks him, and strikes him fatally, and flees to one of these cities, 12 the elders of his city are to send for him, take him from there, and hand him over to the avenger of blood and he will die. 13 Do not look on him with pity but purge from Israel the guilt of shedding innocent blood, and you will prosper.

Boundary Markers

14 “Do not move your neighbor’s boundary marker,(M) established at the start in the inheritance you will receive in the land the Lord your God is giving you to possess.

Witnesses in Court

15 “One witness cannot establish any iniquity or sin against a person, whatever that person has done.(N) A fact must be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.(O)

16 “If a malicious witness(P) testifies against someone accusing him of a crime, 17 the two people in the dispute are to stand in the presence of the Lord before the priests and judges in authority at that time. 18 The judges are to make a careful investigation, and if the witness turns out to be a liar who has falsely accused his brother, 19 you must do to him as he intended to do to his brother. You must purge the evil from you. 20 Then everyone else will hear and be afraid, and they will never again do anything evil like this among you.(Q) 21 Do not show pity: life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, and foot for foot.(R)

Rules for War

20 “When you go out to war against your enemies and see horses, chariots, and an army larger than yours,(S) do not be afraid of them, for the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt,(T) is with you. When you are about to engage in battle, the priest is to come forward and address the army.(U) He is to say to them: ‘Listen, Israel: Today you are about to engage in battle with your enemies. Do not be cowardly. Do not be afraid, alarmed, or terrified because of them. For the Lord your God is the one who goes with you to fight for you(V) against your enemies to give you victory.’

“The officers are to address the army, ‘Has any man built a new house and not dedicated it? Let him leave and return home. Otherwise, he may die in battle and another man dedicate it. Has any man planted a vineyard and not begun to enjoy its fruit?[j] Let him leave and return home. Otherwise he may die in battle and another man enjoy its fruit.[k] Has any man become engaged to a woman and not married her? Let him leave and return home. Otherwise he may die in battle and another man marry her.’ The officers will continue to address the army and say, ‘Is there any man who is afraid or cowardly? Let him leave and return home, so that his brothers won’t lose heart as he did.’[l](W) When the officers have finished addressing the army, they will appoint military commanders to lead it.

10 “When you approach a city to fight against it, make an offer of peace. 11 If it accepts your offer of peace and opens its gates to you, all the people found in it will become forced laborers for you and serve you.(X) 12 However, if it does not make peace with you but wages war against you, lay siege to it. 13 When the Lord your God hands it over to you, strike down all its males with the sword.(Y) 14 But you may take the women, dependents, animals, and whatever else is in the city—all its spoil—as plunder. You may enjoy the spoil of your enemies that the Lord your God has given you. 15 This is how you are to treat all the cities that are far away from you and are not among the cities of these nations. 16 However, you must not let any living thing survive among the cities of these people the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance. 17 You must completely destroy them—the Hethite, Amorite, Canaanite, Perizzite, Hivite, and Jebusite—as the Lord your God has commanded you, 18 so that they won’t teach you to do all the detestable acts they do for their gods, and you sin against the Lord your God.(Z)

19 “When you lay siege to a city for a long time, fighting against it in order to capture it, do not destroy its trees by putting an ax to them, because you can get food from them. Do not cut them down. Are trees of the field human, to come under siege by you? 20 But you may destroy the trees that you know do not produce food. You may cut them down to build siege works against the city that is waging war against you, until it falls.

Luke 9:28-50

The Transfiguration

28 About eight days after this conversation,(A) he took along Peter, John, and James(B) and went up on the mountain to pray.(C) 29 As he was praying, the appearance of his face changed,(D) and his clothes became dazzling white.(E) 30 Suddenly, two men were talking with him—Moses and Elijah. 31 They appeared in glory and were speaking of his departure, which he was about to accomplish in Jerusalem.

32 Peter and those with him were in a deep sleep,[a](F) and when they became fully awake, they saw his glory and the two men who were standing with him. 33 As the two men were departing from him, Peter said to Jesus, “Master,(G) it’s good for us to be here. Let us set up three shelters: one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah”—not knowing what he was saying.(H)

34 While he was saying this, a cloud appeared and overshadowed(I) them. They became afraid as they entered the cloud. 35 Then a voice came from the cloud,(J) saying: “This is my Son,(K) the Chosen One;[b](L) listen to him!” (M)

36 After the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. They kept silent, and at that time told no one what they had seen.

The Power of Jesus over a Demon

37 The next day,(N) when they came down from the mountain, a large crowd met him. 38 Just then a man from the crowd cried out, “Teacher, I beg you to look at my son, because he’s my only child.(O) 39 A spirit seizes him; suddenly he shrieks, and it throws him into convulsions until he foams at the mouth; severely bruising him, it scarcely ever leaves him. 40 I begged your disciples to drive it out, but they couldn’t.”(P)

41 Jesus replied, “You unbelieving and perverse[c] generation,(Q) how long will I be with you and put up with you?(R) Bring your son here.”

42 As the boy was still approaching, the demon knocked him down and threw him into severe convulsions. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, healed the boy,(S) and gave him back to his father.(T) 43 And they were all astonished at the greatness of God.(U)

The Second Prediction of His Death

While everyone was amazed at all the things he was doing,(V) he told his disciples, 44 “Let these words sink in:[d] The Son of Man is about to be betrayed into the hands of men.”(W)

45 But they did not understand this statement;(X) it was concealed from them so that they could not grasp it,(Y) and they were afraid to ask him about it.

Who Is the Greatest?

46 An argument started among them about who was the greatest of them.(Z) 47 But Jesus, knowing their inner thoughts,[e](AA) took a little child and had him stand next to him. 48 He told them, “Whoever welcomes[f] this little child in my name welcomes me. And whoever welcomes me welcomes him who sent me.(AB) For whoever is least among you—this one is great.”(AC)

In His Name

49 John responded,(AD) “Master, we saw someone driving out demons in your name,(AE) and we tried to stop him because he does not follow us.”(AF)

50 “Don’t stop him,” Jesus told him, “because whoever is not against you is for you.”[g](AG)

Psalm 73

BOOK III

(Psalms 73—89)

Psalm 73

God’s Ways Vindicated

A psalm of Asaph.(A)

God is indeed good to Israel,
to the pure in heart.(B)
But as for me, my feet almost slipped;
my steps nearly went astray.(C)
For I envied the arrogant;
I saw the prosperity of the wicked.(D)

They have an easy time until they die,[a]
and their bodies are well fed.[b](E)
They are not in trouble like others;
they are not afflicted like most people.(F)
Therefore, pride is their necklace,
and violence covers them like a garment.(G)
Their eyes bulge out from fatness;
the imaginations of their hearts run wild.(H)
They mock, and they speak maliciously;
they arrogantly threaten oppression.(I)
They set their mouths against heaven,
and their tongues strut across the earth.(J)
10 Therefore his people turn to them[c]
and drink in their overflowing words.[d](K)
11 The wicked say, “How can God know?
Does the Most High know everything?” (L)
12 Look at them—the wicked!
They are always at ease,
and they increase their wealth.(M)

13 Did I purify my heart
and wash my hands in innocence for nothing?(N)
14 For I am afflicted all day long
and punished every morning.(O)
15 If I had decided to say these things aloud,
I would have betrayed your people.[e](P)
16 When I tried to understand all this,
it seemed hopeless[f](Q)
17 until I entered God’s sanctuary.
Then I understood their destiny.(R)
18 Indeed, you put them in slippery places;
you make them fall into ruin.(S)
19 How suddenly they become a desolation!
They come to an end, swept away by terrors.(T)
20 Like one waking from a dream,
Lord, when arising, you will despise their image.(U)

21 When I became embittered
and my innermost being[g] was wounded,(V)
22 I was stupid and didn’t understand;
I was an unthinking animal toward you.(W)
23 Yet I am always with you;
you hold my right hand.(X)
24 You guide me with your counsel,
and afterward you will take me up in glory.[h](Y)
25 Who do I have in heaven but you?
And I desire nothing on earth but you.(Z)
26 My flesh and my heart may fail,
but God is the strength[i] of my heart,
my portion forever.(AA)
27 Those far from you will certainly perish;
you destroy all who are unfaithful to you.(AB)
28 But as for me, God’s presence is my good.
I have made the Lord God my refuge,
so I can tell about all you do.(AC)
