The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Friday October 11, 2019 (NIV)

Jeremiah 16:16-18:23

¹⁶“But now I will send for many fishermen,” declares the Lord, “and they will catch them.^(A) After that I will send for many hunters, and they will hunt^(B) them down on every mountain and hill and from the crevices of the rocks.^(C) ¹⁷My eyes are on all their ways; they are not hidden^(D) from me, nor is their sin concealed from my eyes.^(E) ¹⁸I will repay^(F) them double^(G) for their wickedness and their sin, because they have defiled my land^(H) with the lifeless forms of their vile images^(I) and have filled my inheritance with their detestable idols.^(J)”^(K)

¹⁹Lord, my strength and my fortress,
my refuge^(L) in time of distress,
to you the nations will come^(M)
from the ends of the earth and say,
“Our ancestors possessed nothing but false gods,^(N)
worthless idols^(O) that did them no good.^(P)
²⁰Do people make their own gods?
Yes, but they are not gods!”^(Q)

²¹“Therefore I will teach them—
this time I will teach them
my power and might.
Then they will know
that my name^(R) is the Lord.

17 “Judah’s sin is engraved with an iron tool,^(S)
inscribed with a flint point,
on the tablets of their hearts^(T)
and on the horns^(U) of their altars.
²Even their children remember
their altars and Asherah poles^[a]^(V)
beside the spreading trees
and on the high hills.^(W)
³My mountain in the land
and your^[b] wealth and all your treasures
I will give away as plunder,^(X)
together with your high places,^(Y)
because of sin throughout your country.^(Z)
⁴Through your own fault you will lose
the inheritance^(AA) I gave you.
I will enslave you to your enemies^(AB)
in a land^(AC) you do not know,
for you have kindled my anger,
and it will burn^(AD) forever.”

⁵This is what the Lord says:

“Cursed is the one who trusts in man,^(AE)
who draws strength from mere flesh
and whose heart turns away from the Lord.^(AF)
⁶That person will be like a bush in the wastelands;
they will not see prosperity when it comes.
They will dwell in the parched places^(AG) of the desert,
in a salt^(AH) land where no one lives.

⁷“But blessed^(AI) is the one who trusts^(AJ) in the Lord,
whose confidence is in him.
⁸They will be like a tree planted by the water
that sends out its roots by the stream.^(AK)
It does not fear when heat comes;
its leaves are always green.
It has no worries in a year of drought^(AL)
and never fails to bear fruit.”^(AM)

⁹The heart^(AN) is deceitful above all things
and beyond cure.
Who can understand it?

¹⁰“I the Lord search the heart^(AO)
and examine the mind,^(AP)
to reward^(AQ) each person according to their conduct,
according to what their deeds deserve.”^(AR)

¹¹Like a partridge that hatches eggs it did not lay
are those who gain riches by unjust means.
When their lives are half gone, their riches will desert them,
and in the end they will prove to be fools.^(AS)

¹²A glorious throne,^(AT) exalted from the beginning,
is the place of our sanctuary.
¹³Lord, you are the hope^(AU) of Israel;
all who forsake^(AV) you will be put to shame.
Those who turn away from you will be written in the dust^(AW)
because they have forsaken the Lord,
the spring of living water.^(AX)

¹⁴Heal me, Lord, and I will be healed;^(AY)
save^(AZ) me and I will be saved,
for you are the one I praise.^(BA)
¹⁵They keep saying to me,
“Where is the word of the Lord?
Let it now be fulfilled!”^(BB)
¹⁶I have not run away from being your shepherd;
you know I have not desired the day of despair.
What passes my lips^(BC) is open before you.
¹⁷Do not be a terror^(BD) to me;
you are my refuge^(BE) in the day of disaster.^(BF)
¹⁸Let my persecutors be put to shame,
but keep me from shame;
let them be terrified,
but keep me from terror.
Bring on them the day of disaster;
destroy them with double destruction.^(BG)

Keeping the Sabbath Day Holy

¹⁹This is what the Lord said to me: “Go and stand at the Gate of the People,^[c] through which the kings of Judah go in and out; stand also at all the other gates of Jerusalem.^(BH) ²⁰Say to them, ‘Hear the word of the Lord, you kings of Judah and all people of Judah and everyone living in Jerusalem^(BI) who come through these gates.^(BJ) ²¹This is what the Lord says: Be careful not to carry a load on the Sabbath^(BK) day or bring it through the gates of Jerusalem. ²²Do not bring a load out of your houses or do any work on the Sabbath, but keep the Sabbath day holy, as I commanded your ancestors.^(BL) ²³Yet they did not listen or pay attention;^(BM) they were stiff-necked^(BN) and would not listen or respond to discipline.^(BO) ²⁴But if you are careful to obey me, declares the Lord, and bring no load through the gates of this city on the Sabbath, but keep the Sabbath day holy^(BP) by not doing any work on it, ²⁵then kings who sit on David’s throne^(BQ) will come through the gates of this city with their officials. They and their officials will come riding in chariots and on horses, accompanied by the men of Judah and those living in Jerusalem, and this city will be inhabited forever.^(BR) ²⁶People will come from the towns of Judah and the villages around Jerusalem, from the territory of Benjamin and the western foothills, from the hill country and the Negev,^(BS) bringing burnt offerings and sacrifices, grain offerings and incense, and bringing thank offerings to the house of the Lord. ²⁷But if you do not obey^(BT) me to keep the Sabbath^(BU) day holy by not carrying any load as you come through the gates of Jerusalem on the Sabbath day, then I will kindle an unquenchable fire^(BV) in the gates of Jerusalem that will consume her fortresses.’”^(BW)

At the Potter’s House

18 This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord: ²“Go down to the potter’s house, and there I will give you my message.” ³So I went down to the potter’s house, and I saw him working at the wheel. ⁴But the pot he was shaping from the clay was marred in his hands; so the potter formed it into another pot, shaping it as seemed best to him.

⁵Then the word of the Lord came to me. ⁶He said, “Can I not do with you, Israel, as this potter does?” declares the Lord. “Like clay^(BX) in the hand of the potter, so are you in my hand,^(BY) Israel. ⁷If at any time I announce that a nation or kingdom is to be uprooted,^(BZ) torn down and destroyed, ⁸and if that nation I warned repents of its evil, then I will relent^(CA) and not inflict on it the disaster^(CB) I had planned. ⁹And if at another time I announce that a nation or kingdom is to be built^(CC) up and planted, ¹⁰and if it does evil^(CD) in my sight and does not obey me, then I will reconsider^(CE) the good I had intended to do for it.^(CF)

¹¹“Now therefore say to the people of Judah and those living in Jerusalem, ‘This is what the Lord says: Look! I am preparing a disaster^(CG) for you and devising a plan^(CH) against you. So turn^(CI) from your evil ways,^(CJ) each one of you, and reform your ways and your actions.’^(CK) ¹²But they will reply, ‘It’s no use.^(CL) We will continue with our own plans; we will all follow the stubbornness of our evil hearts.^(CM)’”

¹³Therefore this is what the Lord says:

“Inquire among the nations:
Who has ever heard anything like this?^(CN)
A most horrible^(CO) thing has been done
by Virgin^(CP) Israel.
¹⁴Does the snow of Lebanon
ever vanish from its rocky slopes?
Do its cool waters from distant sources
ever stop flowing?^[d]
¹⁵Yet my people have forgotten^(CQ) me;
they burn incense^(CR) to worthless idols,^(CS)
which made them stumble^(CT) in their ways,
in the ancient paths.^(CU)
They made them walk in byways,
on roads not built up.^(CV)
¹⁶Their land will be an object of horror^(CW)
and of lasting scorn;^(CX)
all who pass by will be appalled^(CY)
and will shake their heads.^(CZ)
¹⁷Like a wind^(DA) from the east,
I will scatter them before their enemies;
I will show them my back and not my face^(DB)
in the day of their disaster.”

¹⁸They said, “Come, let’s make plans^(DC) against Jeremiah; for the teaching of the law by the priest^(DD) will not cease, nor will counsel from the wise,^(DE) nor the word from the prophets.^(DF) So come, let’s attack him with our tongues^(DG) and pay no attention to anything he says.”

¹⁹Listen to me, Lord;
hear what my accusers^(DH) are saying!
²⁰Should good be repaid with evil?^(DI)
Yet they have dug a pit^(DJ) for me.
Remember that I stood^(DK) before you
and spoke in their behalf^(DL)
to turn your wrath away from them.
²¹So give their children over to famine;^(DM)
hand them over to the power of the sword.^(DN)
Let their wives be made childless and widows;^(DO)
let their men be put to death,
their young men^(DP) slain by the sword in battle.
²²Let a cry^(DQ) be heard from their houses
when you suddenly bring invaders against them,
for they have dug a pit^(DR) to capture me
and have hidden snares^(DS) for my feet.
²³But you, Lord, know
all their plots to kill^(DT) me.
Do not forgive^(DU) their crimes
or blot out their sins from your sight.
Let them be overthrown before you;
deal with them in the time of your anger.^(DV)

Living to Please God

4 As for other matters, brothers and sisters,^(A) we instructed you how to live^(B) in order to please God,^(C) as in fact you are living. Now we ask you and urge you in the Lord Jesus to do this more and more. ²For you know what instructions we gave you by the authority of the Lord Jesus.

³It is God’s will^(D) that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality;^(E) ⁴that each of you should learn to control your own body^[a]^(F) in a way that is holy and honorable, ⁵not in passionate lust^(G) like the pagans,^(H) who do not know God;^(I) ⁶and that in this matter no one should wrong or take advantage of a brother or sister.^[b]^(J) The Lord will punish^(K) all those who commit such sins,^(L) as we told you and warned you before. ⁷For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life.^(M) ⁸Therefore, anyone who rejects this instruction does not reject a human being but God, the very God who gives you his Holy Spirit.^(N)

⁹Now about your love for one another^(O) we do not need to write to you,^(P) for you yourselves have been taught by God^(Q) to love each other.^(R) ¹⁰And in fact, you do love all of God’s family throughout Macedonia.^(S) Yet we urge you, brothers and sisters, to do so more and more,^(T) ¹¹and to make it your ambition to lead a quiet life: You should mind your own business and work with your hands,^(U) just as we told you, ¹²so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders^(V) and so that you will not be dependent on anybody.

Believers Who Have Died

¹³Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed^(W) about those who sleep in death,^(X) so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope.^(Y) ¹⁴For we believe that Jesus died and rose again,^(Z) and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him.^(AA) ¹⁵According to the Lord’s word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord,^(AB) will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep.^(AC) ¹⁶For the Lord himself will come down from heaven,^(AD) with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel^(AE) and with the trumpet call of God,^(AF) and the dead in Christ will rise first.^(AG) ¹⁷After that, we who are still alive and are left^(AH) will be caught up together with them in the clouds^(AI) to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord^(AJ) forever. ¹⁸Therefore encourage one another^(AK) with these words.

The Day of the Lord

5 Now, brothers and sisters, about times and dates^(AL) we do not need to write to you,^(AM) ²for you know very well that the day of the Lord^(AN) will come like a thief in the night.^(AO) ³While people are saying, “Peace and safety,”^(AP) destruction will come on them suddenly,^(AQ) as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.^(AR)

¹Sing for joy to God our strength;
shout aloud to the God of Jacob!^(A)

³Sound the ram’s horn^(E) at the New Moon,^(F)
and when the moon is full, on the day of our festival;
⁴this is a decree for Israel,
an ordinance of the God of Jacob.^(G)
⁵When God went out against Egypt,^(H)
he established it as a statute for Joseph.

I heard an unknown voice say:^(I)

⁶“I removed the burden^(J) from their shoulders;^(K)
their hands were set free from the basket.
⁷In your distress you called^(L) and I rescued you,
I answered^(M) you out of a thundercloud;
I tested you at the waters of Meribah.^[c]^(N)
⁸Hear me, my people,^(O) and I will warn you—
if you would only listen to me, Israel!
⁹You shall have no foreign god^(P) among you;

¹¹“But my people would not listen to me;

to follow their own devices.

¹³“If my people would only listen to me,^(V)
if Israel would only follow my ways,
¹⁴how quickly I would subdue^(W) their enemies
and turn my hand against^(X) their foes!

and their punishment would last forever.

Jeremiah 14:11-16:15

¹¹Then the Lord said to me, “Do not pray^(A) for the well-being of this people. ¹²Although they fast, I will not listen to their cry;^(B) though they offer burnt offerings^(C) and grain offerings,^(D) I will not accept^(E) them. Instead, I will destroy them with the sword,^(F) famine^(G) and plague.”^(H)

¹³But I said, “Alas, Sovereign Lord! The prophets^(I) keep telling them, ‘You will not see the sword or suffer famine.^(J) Indeed, I will give you lasting peace^(K) in this place.’”

¹⁴Then the Lord said to me, “The prophets are prophesying lies^(L) in my name. I have not sent^(M) them or appointed them or spoken to them. They are prophesying to you false visions,^(N) divinations,^(O) idolatries^[a] and the delusions of their own minds. ¹⁵Therefore this is what the Lord says about the prophets who are prophesying in my name: I did not send them, yet they are saying, ‘No sword or famine will touch this land.’ Those same prophets will perish^(P) by sword and famine.^(Q) ¹⁶And the people they are prophesying to will be thrown out into the streets of Jerusalem because of the famine and sword. There will be no one to bury^(R) them, their wives, their sons and their daughters.^(S) I will pour out on them the calamity they deserve.^(T)

¹⁷“Speak this word to them:

“‘Let my eyes overflow with tears^(U)
night and day without ceasing;
for the Virgin^(V) Daughter, my people,
has suffered a grievous wound,
a crushing blow.^(W)
¹⁸If I go into the country,
I see those slain by the sword;
if I go into the city,
I see the ravages of famine.^(X)
Both prophet and priest
have gone to a land they know not.^(Y)’”

¹⁹Have you rejected Judah completely?^(Z)
Do you despise Zion?
Why have you afflicted us
so that we cannot be healed?^(AA)
We hoped for peace
but no good has come,
for a time of healing
but there is only terror.^(AB)
²⁰We acknowledge^(AC) our wickedness, Lord,
and the guilt of our ancestors;^(AD)
we have indeed sinned^(AE) against you.
²¹For the sake of your name^(AF) do not despise us;
do not dishonor your glorious throne.^(AG)
Remember your covenant^(AH) with us
and do not break it.
²²Do any of the worthless idols^(AI) of the nations bring rain?^(AJ)
Do the skies themselves send down showers?
No, it is you, Lord our God.
Therefore our hope is in you,
for you are the one who does all this.^(AK)

15 Then the Lord said to me: “Even if Moses^(AL) and Samuel^(AM) were to stand before me, my heart would not go out to this people.^(AN) Send them away from my presence!^(AO) Let them go! ²And if they ask you, ‘Where shall we go?’ tell them, ‘This is what the Lord says:

“‘Those destined for death, to death;
those for the sword, to the sword;^(AP)
those for starvation, to starvation;^(AQ)
those for captivity, to captivity.’^(AR)

³“I will send four kinds of destroyers^(AS) against them,” declares the Lord, “the sword^(AT) to kill and the dogs^(AU) to drag away and the birds^(AV) and the wild animals to devour and destroy.^(AW) ⁴I will make them abhorrent^(AX) to all the kingdoms of the earth^(AY) because of what Manasseh^(AZ) son of Hezekiah king of Judah did in Jerusalem.

⁵“Who will have pity^(BA) on you, Jerusalem?
Who will mourn for you?
Who will stop to ask how you are?
⁶You have rejected^(BB) me,” declares the Lord.
“You keep on backsliding.
So I will reach out^(BC) and destroy you;
I am tired of holding back.^(BD)
⁷I will winnow^(BE) them with a winnowing fork
at the city gates of the land.
I will bring bereavement^(BF) and destruction on my people,^(BG)
for they have not changed their ways.^(BH)
⁸I will make their widows^(BI) more numerous
than the sand of the sea.
At midday I will bring a destroyer^(BJ)
against the mothers of their young men;
suddenly I will bring down on them
anguish and terror.^(BK)
⁹The mother of seven will grow faint^(BL)
and breathe her last.^(BM)
Her sun will set while it is still day;
she will be disgraced^(BN) and humiliated.
I will put the survivors to the sword^(BO)
before their enemies,”^(BP)
declares the Lord.

¹⁰Alas, my mother, that you gave me birth,^(BQ)
a man with whom the whole land strives and contends!^(BR)
I have neither lent^(BS) nor borrowed,
yet everyone curses^(BT) me.

¹¹The Lord said,

“Surely I will deliver you^(BU) for a good purpose;
surely I will make your enemies plead^(BV) with you
in times of disaster and times of distress.

¹²“Can a man break iron—
iron from the north^(BW)—or bronze?

¹³“Your wealth^(BX) and your treasures
I will give as plunder,^(BY) without charge,^(BZ)
because of all your sins
throughout your country.^(CA)
¹⁴I will enslave you to your enemies
in^[b] a land you do not know,^(CB)
for my anger will kindle a fire^(CC)
that will burn against you.”

¹⁵Lord, you understand;
remember me and care for me.
Avenge me on my persecutors.^(CD)
You are long-suffering^(CE)—do not take me away;
think of how I suffer reproach for your sake.^(CF)
¹⁶When your words came, I ate^(CG) them;
they were my joy and my heart’s delight,^(CH)
for I bear your name,^(CI)
Lord God Almighty.
¹⁷I never sat^(CJ) in the company of revelers,
never made merry with them;
I sat alone because your hand^(CK) was on me
and you had filled me with indignation.
¹⁸Why is my pain unending
and my wound grievous and incurable?^(CL)
You are to me like a deceptive brook,
like a spring that fails.^(CM)

¹⁹Therefore this is what the Lord says:

“If you repent, I will restore you
that you may serve^(CN) me;
if you utter worthy, not worthless, words,
you will be my spokesman.^(CO)
Let this people turn to you,
but you must not turn to them.
²⁰I will make you a wall^(CP) to this people,
a fortified wall of bronze;
they will fight against you
but will not overcome^(CQ) you,
for I am with you
to rescue and save you,”^(CR)
declares the Lord.
²¹“I will save^(CS) you from the hands of the wicked^(CT)
and deliver^(CU) you from the grasp of the cruel.”^(CV)

Day of Disaster

16 Then the word of the Lord came to me: ²“You must not marry^(CW) and have sons or daughters in this place.” ³For this is what the Lord says about the sons and daughters born in this land and about the women who are their mothers and the men who are their fathers:^(CX) ⁴“They will die of deadly diseases. They will not be mourned or buried^(CY) but will be like dung lying on the ground.^(CZ) They will perish by sword and famine,^(DA) and their dead bodies will become food for the birds and the wild animals.”^(DB)

⁵For this is what the Lord says: “Do not enter a house where there is a funeral meal; do not go to mourn or show sympathy, because I have withdrawn my blessing, my love and my pity^(DC) from this people,” declares the Lord. ⁶“Both high and low will die in this land.^(DD) They will not be buried or mourned,^(DE) and no one will cut^(DF) themselves or shave^(DG) their head for the dead. ⁷No one will offer food^(DH) to comfort those who mourn^(DI) for the dead—not even for a father or a mother—nor will anyone give them a drink to console^(DJ) them.

⁸“And do not enter a house where there is feasting and sit down to eat and drink.^(DK) ⁹For this is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Before your eyes and in your days I will bring an end to the sounds^(DL) of joy and gladness and to the voices of bride^(DM) and bridegroom in this place.^(DN)

¹⁰“When you tell these people all this and they ask you, ‘Why has the Lord decreed such a great disaster against us? What wrong have we done? What sin have we committed against the Lord our God?’^(DO) ¹¹then say to them, ‘It is because your ancestors forsook me,’ declares the Lord, ‘and followed other gods and served and worshiped^(DP) them. They forsook me and did not keep my law.^(DQ) ¹²But you have behaved more wickedly than your ancestors.^(DR) See how all of you are following the stubbornness of your evil hearts^(DS) instead of obeying me. ¹³So I will throw you out of this land^(DT) into a land neither you nor your ancestors have known,^(DU) and there you will serve other gods^(DV) day and night, for I will show you no favor.’^(DW)

¹⁴“However, the days are coming,”^(DX) declares the Lord, “when it will no longer be said, ‘As surely as the Lord lives, who brought the Israelites up out of Egypt,’^(DY) ¹⁵but it will be said, ‘As surely as the Lord lives, who brought the Israelites up out of the land of the north^(DZ) and out of all the countries where he had banished them.’^(EA) For I will restore^(EB) them to the land I gave their ancestors.^(EC)

⁹Surely you remember, brothers and sisters, our toil and hardship; we worked^(A) night and day in order not to be a burden to anyone^(B) while we preached the gospel of God to you. ¹⁰You are witnesses,^(C) and so is God,^(D) of how holy,^(E) righteous and blameless we were among you who believed. ¹¹For you know that we dealt with each of you as a father deals with his own children,^(F) ¹²encouraging, comforting and urging you to live lives worthy^(G) of God, who calls^(H) you into his kingdom and glory.

¹³And we also thank God continually^(I) because, when you received the word of God,^(J) which you heard from us, you accepted it not as a human word, but as it actually is, the word of God, which is indeed at work in you who believe. ¹⁴For you, brothers and sisters, became imitators^(K) of God’s churches in Judea,^(L) which are in Christ Jesus: You suffered from your own people^(M) the same things those churches suffered from the Jews ¹⁵who killed the Lord Jesus^(N) and the prophets^(O) and also drove us out. They displease God and are hostile to everyone ¹⁶in their effort to keep us from speaking to the Gentiles^(P) so that they may be saved. In this way they always heap up their sins to the limit.^(Q) The wrath of God has come upon them at last.^[a]

Paul’s Longing to See the Thessalonians

¹⁷But, brothers and sisters, when we were orphaned by being separated from you for a short time (in person, not in thought),^(R) out of our intense longing we made every effort to see you.^(S) ¹⁸For we wanted to come to you—certainly I, Paul, did, again and again—but Satan^(T) blocked our way.^(U) ¹⁹For what is our hope, our joy, or the crown^(V) in which we will glory^(W) in the presence of our Lord Jesus when he comes?^(X) Is it not you? ²⁰Indeed, you are our glory^(Y) and joy.

3 So when we could stand it no longer,^(Z) we thought it best to be left by ourselves in Athens.^(AA) ²We sent Timothy,^(AB) who is our brother and co-worker^(AC) in God’s service in spreading the gospel of Christ,^(AD) to strengthen and encourage you in your faith, ³so that no one would be unsettled by these trials.^(AE) For you know quite well that we are destined for them.^(AF) ⁴In fact, when we were with you, we kept telling you that we would be persecuted. And it turned out that way, as you well know.^(AG) ⁵For this reason, when I could stand it no longer,^(AH) I sent to find out about your faith.^(AI) I was afraid that in some way the tempter^(AJ) had tempted you and that our labors might have been in vain.^(AK)

Timothy’s Encouraging Report

⁶But Timothy^(AL) has just now come to us from you^(AM) and has brought good news about your faith and love.^(AN) He has told us that you always have pleasant memories of us and that you long to see us, just as we also long to see you.^(AO) ⁷Therefore, brothers and sisters, in all our distress and persecution we were encouraged about you because of your faith. ⁸For now we really live, since you are standing firm^(AP) in the Lord. ⁹How can we thank God enough for you^(AQ) in return for all the joy we have in the presence of our God because of you?^(AR) ¹⁰Night and day we pray^(AS) most earnestly that we may see you again^(AT) and supply what is lacking in your faith.

¹¹Now may our God and Father^(AU) himself and our Lord Jesus clear the way for us to come to you. ¹²May the Lord make your love increase and overflow for each other^(AV) and for everyone else, just as ours does for you. ¹³May he strengthen your hearts so that you will be blameless^(AW) and holy in the presence of our God and Father^(AX) when our Lord Jesus comes^(AY) with all his holy ones.^(AZ)

Jeremiah’s Complaint

12 You are always righteous,^(A) Lord,
when I bring a case^(B) before you.
Yet I would speak with you about your justice:^(C)
Why does the way of the wicked prosper?^(D)
Why do all the faithless live at ease?
²You have planted^(E) them, and they have taken root;
they grow and bear fruit.^(F)
You are always on their lips
but far from their hearts.^(G)
³Yet you know me, Lord;
you see me and test^(H) my thoughts about you.
Drag them off like sheep^(I) to be butchered!
Set them apart for the day of slaughter!^(J)
⁴How long will the land lie parched^(K)
and the grass in every field be withered?^(L)
Because those who live in it are wicked,
the animals and birds have perished.^(M)
Moreover, the people are saying,
“He will not see what happens to us.”

God’s Answer

⁵“If you have raced with men on foot
and they have worn you out,
how can you compete with horses?
If you stumble^[a] in safe country,
how will you manage in the thickets^(N) by^[b] the Jordan?
⁶Your relatives, members of your own family—
even they have betrayed you;
they have raised a loud cry against you.^(O)
Do not trust them,
though they speak well of you.^(P)

⁷“I will forsake^(Q) my house,
abandon^(R) my inheritance;
I will give the one I love^(S)
into the hands of her enemies.^(T)
⁸My inheritance has become to me
like a lion^(U) in the forest.
She roars at me;
therefore I hate her.^(V)
⁹Has not my inheritance become to me
like a speckled bird of prey
that other birds of prey surround and attack?
Go and gather all the wild beasts;
bring them to devour.^(W)
¹⁰Many shepherds^(X) will ruin my vineyard

¹⁴This is what the Lord says: “As for all my wicked neighbors who seize the inheritance^(AI) I gave my people Israel, I will uproot^(AJ) them from their lands and I will uproot^(AK) the people of Judah from among them. ¹⁵But after I uproot them, I will again have compassion^(AL) and will bring^(AM) each of them back to their own inheritance and their own country. ¹⁶And if they learn^(AN) well the ways of my people and swear by my name, saying, ‘As surely as the Lord lives’^(AO)—even as they once taught my people to swear by Baal^(AP)—then they will be established among my people.^(AQ) ¹⁷But if any nation does not listen, I will completely uproot and destroy^(AR) it,” declares the Lord.

A Linen Belt

13 This is what the Lord said to me: “Go and buy a linen belt and put it around your waist, but do not let it touch water.” ²So I bought a belt, as the Lord directed, and put it around my waist.

³Then the word of the Lord came to me a second time:^(AS) ⁴“Take the belt you bought and are wearing around your waist, and go now to Perath^[c]^(AT) and hide it there in a crevice in the rocks.” ⁵So I went and hid it at Perath, as the Lord told me.^(AU)

⁶Many days later the Lord said to me, “Go now to Perath and get the belt I told you to hide there.” ⁷So I went to Perath and dug up the belt and took it from the place where I had hidden it, but now it was ruined and completely useless.

⁸Then the word of the Lord came to me: ⁹“This is what the Lord says: ‘In the same way I will ruin the pride of Judah and the great pride^(AV) of Jerusalem. ¹⁰These wicked people, who refuse to listen^(AW) to my words, who follow the stubbornness of their hearts^(AX) and go after other gods^(AY) to serve and worship them,^(AZ) will be like this belt—completely useless!^(BA) ¹¹For as a belt is bound around the waist, so I bound all the people of Israel and all the people of Judah to me,’ declares the Lord, ‘to be my people for my renown^(BB) and praise and honor.^(BC) But they have not listened.’^(BD)

Wineskins

¹²“Say to them: ‘This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: Every wineskin should be filled with wine.’ And if they say to you, ‘Don’t we know that every wineskin should be filled with wine?’ ¹³then tell them, ‘This is what the Lord says: I am going to fill with drunkenness^(BE) all who live in this land, including the kings who sit on David’s throne, the priests, the prophets and all those living in Jerusalem. ¹⁴I will smash them one against the other, parents and children alike, declares the Lord. I will allow no pity^(BF) or mercy or compassion^(BG) to keep me from destroying^(BH) them.’”

Threat of Captivity

¹⁵Hear and pay attention,
do not be arrogant,
for the Lord has spoken.^(BI)
¹⁶Give glory^(BJ) to the Lord your God
before he brings the darkness,
before your feet stumble^(BK)
on the darkening hills.
You hope for light,
but he will turn it to utter darkness
and change it to deep gloom.^(BL)
¹⁷If you do not listen,^(BM)
I will weep in secret
because of your pride;
my eyes will weep bitterly,
overflowing with tears,^(BN)
because the Lord’s flock^(BO) will be taken captive.^(BP)

¹⁸Say to the king^(BQ) and to the queen mother,^(BR)
“Come down from your thrones,
for your glorious crowns^(BS)
will fall from your heads.”
¹⁹The cities in the Negev will be shut up,
and there will be no one to open them.
All Judah^(BT) will be carried into exile,
carried completely away.

²⁰Look up and see
those who are coming from the north.^(BU)
Where is the flock^(BV) that was entrusted to you,
the sheep of which you boasted?
²¹What will you say when the Lord sets over you
those you cultivated as your special allies?^(BW)
Will not pain grip you
like that of a woman in labor?^(BX)
²²And if you ask yourself,
“Why has this happened to me?”^(BY)—
it is because of your many sins^(BZ)
that your skirts have been torn off^(CA)
and your body mistreated.^(CB)
²³Can an Ethiopian^[d] change his skin
or a leopard its spots?
Neither can you do good
who are accustomed to doing evil.^(CC)

²⁴“I will scatter you like chaff^(CD)
driven by the desert wind.^(CE)
²⁵This is your lot,
the portion^(CF) I have decreed for you,”
declares the Lord,
“because you have forgotten^(CG) me
and trusted in false gods.^(CH)

14 This is the word of the Lord that came to Jeremiah concerning the drought:^(CM)

her cities languish;
they wail for the land,
and a cry goes up from Jerusalem.
³The nobles send their servants for water;
they go to the cisterns
but find no water.^(CO)
They return with their jars unfilled;
dismayed and despairing,

⁴The ground is cracked
because there is no rain in the land;^(CQ)
the farmers are dismayed
and cover their heads.
⁵Even the doe in the field
deserts her newborn fawn

Paul’s Ministry in Thessalonica

2 You know, brothers and sisters, that our visit to you^(AD) was not without results.^(AE) ²We had previously suffered^(AF) and been treated outrageously in Philippi,^(AG) as you know, but with the help of our God we dared to tell you his gospel in the face of strong opposition.^(AH) ³For the appeal we make does not spring from error or impure motives,^(AI) nor are we trying to trick you.^(AJ) ⁴On the contrary, we speak as those approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel.^(AK) We are not trying to please people^(AL) but God, who tests our hearts.^(AM) ⁵You know we never used flattery, nor did we put on a mask to cover up greed^(AN)—God is our witness.^(AO) ⁶We were not looking for praise from people,^(AP) not from you or anyone else, even though as apostles^(AQ) of Christ we could have asserted our authority.^(AR) ⁷Instead, we were like young children^[c] among you.

they cut a tree out of the forest,

⁴They adorn it with silver^(F) and gold;
they fasten it with hammer and nails
so it will not totter.^(G)
⁵Like a scarecrow in a cucumber field,
their idols cannot speak;^(H)
they must be carried

⁶No one is like you,^(L) Lord;

and your name is mighty in power.

Coming Destruction

¹⁷Gather up your belongings^(AP) to leave the land,
you who live under siege.
¹⁸For this is what the Lord says:
“At this time I will hurl^(AQ) out
those who live in this land;
I will bring distress^(AR) on them
so that they may be captured.”

¹⁹Woe to me because of my injury!
My wound^(AS) is incurable!
Yet I said to myself,
“This is my sickness, and I must endure^(AT) it.”
²⁰My tent^(AU) is destroyed;
all its ropes are snapped.
My children are gone from me and are no more;^(AV)
no one is left now to pitch my tent
or to set up my shelter.
²¹The shepherds^(AW) are senseless^(AX)
and do not inquire of the Lord;^(AY)
so they do not prosper^(AZ)
and all their flock is scattered.^(BA)
²²Listen! The report is coming—
a great commotion from the land of the north!^(BB)
It will make the towns of Judah desolate,^(BC)

Jeremiah’s Prayer

²³Lord, I know that people’s lives are not their own;
it is not for them to direct their steps.^(BE)
²⁴Discipline me, Lord, but only in due measure—
not in your anger,^(BF)
or you will reduce me to nothing.^(BG)
²⁵Pour out your wrath on the nations^(BH)
that do not acknowledge you,
on the peoples who do not call on your name.^(BI)
For they have devoured^(BJ) Jacob;
they have devoured him completely
and destroyed his homeland.^(BK)

The Covenant Is Broken

11 This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord: ²“Listen to the terms of this covenant^(BL) and tell them to the people of Judah and to those who live in Jerusalem. ³Tell them that this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘Cursed^(BM) is the one who does not obey the terms of this covenant— ⁴the terms I commanded your ancestors when I brought them out of Egypt,^(BN) out of the iron-smelting furnace.^(BO)’ I said, ‘Obey^(BP) me and do everything I command you, and you will be my people,^(BQ) and I will be your God. ⁵Then I will fulfill the oath I swore^(BR) to your ancestors, to give them a land flowing with milk and honey’^(BS)—the land you possess today.”

I answered, “Amen,^(BT) Lord.”

⁶The Lord said to me, “Proclaim^(BU) all these words in the towns of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem: ‘Listen to the terms of this covenant and follow^(BV) them. ⁷From the time I brought your ancestors up from Egypt until today, I warned them again and again,^(BW) saying, “Obey me.” ⁸But they did not listen or pay attention;^(BX) instead, they followed the stubbornness of their evil hearts.^(BY) So I brought on them all the curses^(BZ) of the covenant I had commanded them to follow but that they did not keep.^(CA)’”

⁹Then the Lord said to me, “There is a conspiracy^(CB) among the people of Judah and those who live in Jerusalem. ¹⁰They have returned to the sins of their ancestors,^(CC) who refused to listen to my words.^(CD) They have followed other gods^(CE) to serve them.^(CF) Both Israel and Judah have broken the covenant^(CG) I made with their ancestors. ¹¹Therefore this is what the Lord says: ‘I will bring on them a disaster^(CH) they cannot escape.^(CI) Although they cry^(CJ) out to me, I will not listen^(CK) to them. ¹²The towns of Judah and the people of Jerusalem will go and cry out to the gods to whom they burn incense,^(CL) but they will not help them at all when disaster^(CM) strikes. ¹³You, Judah, have as many gods^(CN) as you have towns;^(CO) and the altars you have set up to burn incense^(CP) to that shameful^(CQ) god Baal are as many as the streets of Jerusalem.’

¹⁴“Do not pray^(CR) for this people or offer any plea or petition for them, because I will not listen^(CS) when they call to me in the time of their distress.

¹⁵“What is my beloved doing in my temple
as she, with many others, works out her evil schemes?
Can consecrated meat^(CT) avert your punishment?^(CU)
When you engage in your wickedness,
then you rejoice.^[b]”

¹⁶The Lord called you a thriving olive tree^(CV)
with fruit beautiful in form.
But with the roar of a mighty storm
he will set it on fire,^(CW)
and its branches will be broken.^(CX)

¹⁷The Lord Almighty, who planted^(CY) you, has decreed disaster^(CZ) for you, because the people of both Israel and Judah have done evil and aroused^(DA) my anger by burning incense to Baal.^(DB)

Plot Against Jeremiah

¹⁸Because the Lord revealed their plot to me, I knew it, for at that time he showed me what they were doing. ¹⁹I had been like a gentle lamb led to the slaughter;^(DC) I did not realize that they had plotted^(DD) against me, saying,

“Let us destroy the tree and its fruit;
let us cut him off from the land of the living,^(DE)
that his name be remembered^(DF) no more.”
²⁰But you, Lord Almighty, who judge righteously^(DG)
and test the heart^(DH) and mind,^(DI)
let me see your vengeance^(DJ) on them,
for to you I have committed my cause.

²¹Therefore this is what the Lord says about the people of Anathoth^(DK) who are threatening to kill you,^(DL) saying, “Do not prophesy^(DM) in the name of the Lord or you will die^(DN) by our hands”— ²²therefore this is what the Lord Almighty says: “I will punish them. Their young men^(DO) will die by the sword, their sons and daughters by famine. ²³Not even a remnant^(DP) will be left to them, because I will bring disaster on the people of Anathoth in the year of their punishment.^(DQ)”

they will be dismayed^(C) and trapped.^(D)
Since they have rejected the word^(E) of the Lord,
what kind of wisdom^(F) do they have?
¹⁰Therefore I will give their wives to other men
and their fields to new owners.^(G)
From the least to the greatest,
all are greedy for gain;^(H)

⁹Should I not punish them for this?”
declares the Lord.

on such a nation as this?”

¹⁰I will weep and wail for the mountains
and take up a lament concerning the wilderness grasslands.^(BL)
They are desolate and untraveled,
and the lowing of cattle is not heard.
The birds^(BM) have all fled
and the animals are gone.

¹¹“I will make Jerusalem a heap^(BN) of ruins,
a haunt of jackals;^(BO)
and I will lay waste the towns of Judah^(BP)
so no one can live there.”^(BQ)

¹²Who is wise^(BR) enough to understand this? Who has been instructed by the Lord and can explain it? Why has the land been ruined and laid waste like a desert that no one can cross?

¹³The Lord said, “It is because they have forsaken my law, which I set before them; they have not obeyed me or followed my law.^(BS) ¹⁴Instead, they have followed^(BT) the stubbornness of their hearts;^(BU) they have followed the Baals, as their ancestors taught them.” ¹⁵Therefore this is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: “See, I will make this people eat bitter food^(BV) and drink poisoned water.^(BW) ¹⁶I will scatter them among nations^(BX) that neither they nor their ancestors have known,^(BY) and I will pursue them with the sword^(BZ) until I have made an end of them.”^(CA)

¹⁷This is what the Lord Almighty says:

“Consider now! Call for the wailing women^(CB) to come;
send for the most skillful of them.
¹⁸Let them come quickly
and wail over us
till our eyes overflow with tears
and water streams from our eyelids.^(CC)
¹⁹The sound of wailing is heard from Zion:
‘How ruined^(CD) we are!
How great is our shame!
We must leave our land
because our houses are in ruins.’”

²⁰Now, you women, hear the word of the Lord;
open your ears to the words of his mouth.^(CE)
Teach your daughters how to wail;
teach one another a lament.^(CF)
²¹Death has climbed in through our windows^(CG)
and has entered our fortresses;
it has removed the children from the streets
and the young men^(CH) from the public squares.

²²Say, “This is what the Lord declares:

“‘Dead bodies will lie
like dung^(CI) on the open field,
like cut grain behind the reaper,
with no one to gather them.’”

²³This is what the Lord says:

“Let not the wise boast of their wisdom^(CJ)
or the strong boast of their strength^(CK)
or the rich boast of their riches,^(CL)
²⁴but let the one who boasts boast^(CM) about this:
that they have the understanding to know^(CN) me,
that I am the Lord,^(CO) who exercises kindness,^(CP)
justice and righteousness^(CQ) on earth,
for in these I delight,”
declares the Lord.

²⁵“The days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when I will punish all who are circumcised only in the flesh^(CR)— ²⁶Egypt, Judah, Edom, Ammon, Moab and all who live in the wilderness in distant places.^[g]^(CS) For all these nations are really uncircumcised,^(CT) and even the whole house of Israel is uncircumcised in heart.^(CU)”

⁴²They did not remember^(U) his power—
the day he redeemed them from the oppressor,^(V)
⁴³the day he displayed his signs^(W) in Egypt,
his wonders^(X) in the region of Zoan.
⁴⁴He turned their river into blood;^(Y)
they could not drink from their streams.
⁴⁵He sent swarms of flies^(Z) that devoured them,
and frogs^(AA) that devastated them.
⁴⁶He gave their crops to the grasshopper,^(AB)
their produce to the locust.^(AC)
⁴⁷He destroyed their vines with hail^(AD)
and their sycamore-figs with sleet.

Jeremiah 6:16-8:7

¹⁶This is what the Lord says:

“Stand at the crossroads and look;
ask for the ancient paths,^(A)
ask where the good way^(B) is, and walk in it,
and you will find rest^(C) for your souls.
But you said, ‘We will not walk in it.’
¹⁷I appointed watchmen^(D) over you and said,
‘Listen to the sound of the trumpet!’^(E)
But you said, ‘We will not listen.’^(F)
¹⁸Therefore hear, you nations;
you who are witnesses,
observe what will happen to them.
¹⁹Hear, you earth:^(G)
I am bringing disaster^(H) on this people,
the fruit of their schemes,^(I)
because they have not listened to my words^(J)
and have rejected my law.^(K)
²⁰What do I care about incense from Sheba^(L)
or sweet calamus^(M) from a distant land?
Your burnt offerings are not acceptable;^(N)
your sacrifices^(O) do not please me.”^(P)

²¹Therefore this is what the Lord says:

“I will put obstacles before this people.
Parents and children alike will stumble^(Q) over them;
neighbors and friends will perish.”

²²This is what the Lord says:

“Look, an army is coming
from the land of the north;^(R)
a great nation is being stirred up
from the ends of the earth.^(S)
²³They are armed with bow and spear;
they are cruel and show no mercy.^(T)
They sound like the roaring sea^(U)
as they ride on their horses;^(V)
they come like men in battle formation
to attack you, Daughter Zion.^(W)”

²⁴We have heard reports about them,
and our hands hang limp.^(X)
Anguish^(Y) has gripped us,
pain like that of a woman in labor.^(Z)
²⁵Do not go out to the fields
or walk on the roads,
for the enemy has a sword,
and there is terror on every side.^(AA)
²⁶Put on sackcloth,^(AB) my people,
and roll in ashes;^(AC)
mourn with bitter wailing^(AD)
as for an only son,^(AE)
for suddenly the destroyer^(AF)
will come upon us.

²⁷“I have made you a tester^(AG) of metals
and my people the ore,
that you may observe
and test their ways.
²⁸They are all hardened rebels,^(AH)
going about to slander.^(AI)
They are bronze and iron;^(AJ)
they all act corruptly.
²⁹The bellows blow fiercely
to burn away the lead with fire,
but the refining^(AK) goes on in vain;
the wicked are not purged out.
³⁰They are called rejected silver,^(AL)
because the Lord has rejected them.”^(AM)

False Religion Worthless

7 This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord: ²“Stand^(AN) at the gate of the Lord’s house and there proclaim this message:

“‘Hear the word of the Lord, all you people of Judah who come through these gates to worship the Lord. ³This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Reform your ways^(AO) and your actions, and I will let you live^(AP) in this place. ⁴Do not trust^(AQ) in deceptive^(AR) words and say, “This is the temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord!” ⁵If you really change^(AS) your ways and your actions and deal with each other justly,^(AT) ⁶if you do not oppress^(AU) the foreigner, the fatherless or the widow and do not shed innocent blood^(AV) in this place, and if you do not follow other gods^(AW) to your own harm, ⁷then I will let you live in this place, in the land^(AX) I gave your ancestors^(AY) for ever and ever. ⁸But look, you are trusting^(AZ) in deceptive^(BA) words that are worthless.

⁹“‘Will you steal^(BB) and murder,^(BC) commit adultery^(BD) and perjury,^[a]^(BE) burn incense to Baal^(BF) and follow other gods^(BG) you have not known, ¹⁰and then come and stand^(BH) before me in this house,^(BI) which bears my Name, and say, “We are safe”—safe to do all these detestable things?^(BJ) ¹¹Has this house,^(BK) which bears my Name, become a den of robbers^(BL) to you? But I have been watching!^(BM) declares the Lord.

¹²“‘Go now to the place in Shiloh^(BN) where I first made a dwelling^(BO) for my Name,^(BP) and see what I did^(BQ) to it because of the wickedness of my people Israel. ¹³While you were doing all these things, declares the Lord, I spoke^(BR) to you again and again,^(BS) but you did not listen;^(BT) I called^(BU) you, but you did not answer.^(BV) ¹⁴Therefore, what I did to Shiloh^(BW) I will now do to the house that bears my Name,^(BX) the temple^(BY) you trust in, the place I gave to you and your ancestors. ¹⁵I will thrust you from my presence,^(BZ) just as I did all your fellow Israelites, the people of Ephraim.’^(CA)

¹⁶“So do not pray for this people nor offer any plea^(CB) or petition for them; do not plead with me, for I will not listen^(CC) to you. ¹⁷Do you not see what they are doing in the towns of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem? ¹⁸The children gather wood, the fathers light the fire, and the women knead the dough and make cakes to offer to the Queen of Heaven.^(CD) They pour out drink offerings^(CE) to other gods to arouse^(CF) my anger. ¹⁹But am I the one they are provoking?^(CG) declares the Lord. Are they not rather harming themselves, to their own shame?^(CH)

²⁰“‘Therefore this is what the Sovereign^(CI) Lord says: My anger^(CJ) and my wrath will be poured^(CK) out on this place—on man and beast, on the trees of the field and on the crops of your land—and it will burn and not be quenched.^(CL)

²¹“‘This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Go ahead, add your burnt offerings to your other sacrifices^(CM) and eat^(CN) the meat yourselves! ²²For when I brought your ancestors out of Egypt and spoke to them, I did not just give them commands^(CO) about burnt offerings and sacrifices,^(CP) ²³but I gave them this command:^(CQ) Obey^(CR) me, and I will be your God and you will be my people.^(CS) Walk in obedience to all^(CT) I command you, that it may go well^(CU) with you. ²⁴But they did not listen^(CV) or pay attention;^(CW) instead, they followed the stubborn inclinations of their evil hearts.^(CX) They went backward^(CY) and not forward. ²⁵From the time your ancestors left Egypt until now, day after day, again and again^(CZ) I sent you my servants^(DA) the prophets.^(DB) ²⁶But they did not listen to me or pay attention.^(DC) They were stiff-necked^(DD) and did more evil than their ancestors.’^(DE)

²⁷“When you tell^(DF) them all this, they will not listen^(DG) to you; when you call to them, they will not answer.^(DH) ²⁸Therefore say to them, ‘This is the nation that has not obeyed the Lord its God or responded to correction.^(DI) Truth^(DJ) has perished; it has vanished from their lips.

²⁹“‘Cut off^(DK) your hair and throw it away; take up a lament^(DL) on the barren heights, for the Lord has rejected and abandoned^(DM) this generation that is under his wrath.

The Valley of Slaughter

³⁰“‘The people of Judah have done evil^(DN) in my eyes, declares the Lord. They have set up their detestable idols^(DO) in the house that bears my Name and have defiled^(DP) it. ³¹They have built the high places of Topheth^(DQ) in the Valley of Ben Hinnom^(DR) to burn their sons and daughters^(DS) in the fire—something I did not command, nor did it enter my mind.^(DT) ³²So beware, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when people will no longer call it Topheth or the Valley of Ben Hinnom, but the Valley of Slaughter,^(DU) for they will bury^(DV) the dead in Topheth until there is no more room. ³³Then the carcasses^(DW) of this people will become food^(DX) for the birds and the wild animals, and there will be no one to frighten them away.^(DY) ³⁴I will bring an end to the sounds^(DZ) of joy and gladness and to the voices of bride and bridegroom^(EA) in the towns of Judah and the streets of Jerusalem,^(EB) for the land will become desolate.^(EC)

8 “‘At that time, declares the Lord, the bones of the kings and officials of Judah, the bones of the priests and prophets, and the bones^(ED) of the people of Jerusalem will be removed^(EE) from their graves. ²They will be exposed to the sun and the moon and all the stars of the heavens, which they have loved and served^(EF) and which they have followed and consulted and worshiped.^(EG) They will not be gathered up or buried,^(EH) but will be like dung lying on the ground.^(EI) ³Wherever I banish them,^(EJ) all the survivors of this evil nation will prefer death to life,^(EK) declares the Lord Almighty.’

Sin and Punishment

⁴“Say to them, ‘This is what the Lord says:

“‘When people fall down, do they not get up?^(EL)
When someone turns away,^(EM) do they not return?
⁵Why then have these people turned away?
Why does Jerusalem always turn away?
They cling to deceit;^(EN)
they refuse to return.^(EO)
⁶I have listened^(EP) attentively,
but they do not say what is right.
None of them repent^(EQ) of their wickedness,
saying, “What have I done?”
Each pursues their own course^(ER)
like a horse charging into battle.
⁷Even the stork in the sky
knows her appointed seasons,
and the dove, the swift and the thrush
observe the time of their migration.
But my people do not know^(ES)
the requirements of the Lord.

Freedom From Human Rules

¹⁶Therefore do not let anyone judge you^(R) by what you eat or drink,^(S) or with regard to a religious festival,^(T) a New Moon celebration^(U) or a Sabbath day.^(V) ¹⁷These are a shadow of the things that were to come;^(W) the reality, however, is found in Christ. ¹⁸Do not let anyone who delights in false humility^(X) and the worship of angels disqualify you.^(Y) Such a person also goes into great detail about what they have seen; they are puffed up with idle notions by their unspiritual mind. ¹⁹They have lost connection with the head,^(Z) from whom the whole body,^(AA) supported and held together by its ligaments and sinews, grows as God causes it to grow.^(AB)

²⁰Since you died with Christ^(AC) to the elemental spiritual forces of this world,^(AD) why, as though you still belonged to the world, do you submit to its rules:^(AE) ²¹“Do not handle! Do not taste! Do not touch!”? ²²These rules, which have to do with things that are all destined to perish^(AF) with use, are based on merely human commands and teachings.^(AG) ²³Such regulations indeed have an appearance of wisdom, with their self-imposed worship, their false humility^(AH) and their harsh treatment of the body, but they lack any value in restraining sensual indulgence.

Psalm 78

A maskil^[a] of Asaph.

¹My people, hear my teaching;^(A)
listen to the words of my mouth.
²I will open my mouth with a parable;^(B)
I will utter hidden things, things from of old—
³things we have heard and known,
things our ancestors have told us.^(C)
⁴We will not hide them from their descendants;^(D)
we will tell the next generation^(E)
the praiseworthy deeds^(F) of the Lord,
his power, and the wonders^(G) he has done.
⁵He decreed statutes^(H) for Jacob^(I)
and established the law in Israel,
which he commanded our ancestors
to teach their children,
⁶so the next generation would know them,
even the children yet to be born,^(J)
and they in turn would tell their children.
⁷Then they would put their trust in God
and would not forget^(K) his deeds
but would keep his commands.^(L)
⁸They would not be like their ancestors^(M)—

²³Yet he gave a command to the skies above
and opened the doors of the heavens;^(AJ)

he gave them the grain of heaven.
²⁵Human beings ate the bread of angels;
he sent them all the food they could eat.

and by his power made the south wind blow.

²⁸He made them come down inside their camp,
all around their tents.

Jeremiah’s Lament

¹⁹My anguish, my anguish!^[a] I writhe in agony!
Oh, the pain in^[b] my heart!^(A)
My heart pounds;
I cannot be silent.
For you, my soul,
have heard the sound of the ram’s horn—
the shout of battle.
²⁰Disaster after disaster^(B) is reported
because the whole land is destroyed.
Suddenly my tents are destroyed,
my tent curtains, in a moment.
²¹How long must I see the signal flag
and hear the sound of the ram’s horn?
²²“For my people are fools;
they do not know me.
They are foolish children,
without understanding.^(C)
They are skilled in doing what is evil,
but they do not know how to do what is good.”^(D)
²³I looked at the earth,
and it was formless and empty.^(E)
I looked to the heavens,
and their light was gone.^(F)

that you adorn yourself with gold jewelry,
that you enhance your eyes with makeup?^(U)
You beautify yourself for nothing.
Your lovers reject you;^(V)
they intend to take your life.^(W)
³¹I hear a cry like a woman in labor,^(X)
a cry of anguish like one bearing her first child.
The cry of Daughter Zion gasping for breath,
stretching out her hands:^(Y)
“Woe is me, for my life is weary
because of the murderers!”

The Depravity of Jerusalem

5 Roam^(Z) through the streets of Jerusalem.
Investigate;^[c]
search in her squares.
If you find one person,^(AA)
any who acts justly,
who pursues faithfulness,
then I will forgive her.^(AB)
²When they say, “As the Lord lives,”^(AC)
they are swearing falsely.^(AD)
³Lord, don’t your eyes look for faithfulness?^(AE)
You have struck them, but they felt no pain.^(AF)
You finished them off,
but they refused to accept discipline.^(AG)
They made their faces harder than rock,^(AH)
and they refused to return.^(AI)

⁴Then I thought:

They are just the poor;
they have been foolish.
For they don’t understand the way of the Lord,^(AJ)
the justice of their God.^(AK)
⁵I will go to the powerful
and speak to them.
Surely they know the way of the Lord,
the justice of their God.^(AL)
However, these also had broken the yoke
and torn off the chains.^(AM)
⁶Therefore, a lion from the forest will strike them down.^(AN)
A wolf from arid plains will ravage them.
A leopard^(AO) stalks their cities.
Anyone who leaves them will be torn to pieces
because their rebellious acts are many,^(AP)
their unfaithful deeds numerous.^(AQ)

⁷Why should I forgive you?
Your children have abandoned me
and sworn by those who are not gods.^(AR)
I satisfied their needs, yet they committed adultery;^(AS)
they gashed themselves^(AT) at the^[d] prostitute’s house.
⁸They are well-fed,^[e] eager^[f] stallions,^(AU)
each neighing^(AV) after someone else’s wife.^(AW)
⁹Should I not punish them for these things?^(AX)
This is the Lord’s declaration.
Should I not avenge myself^(AY)
on such a nation as this?

¹⁰Go up among her vineyard terraces and destroy them,^(AZ)
but do not finish them off.^(BA)
Prune away her shoots,
for they do not belong to the Lord.^(BB)
¹¹They, the house of Israel and the house of Judah,
have dealt very treacherously with me.^(BC)
This is the Lord’s declaration.
¹²They have contradicted the Lord
and insisted, “It won’t happen.^[g]^(BD)
Harm won’t come to us;
we won’t see sword or famine.”
¹³The prophets become only wind,
for the Lord’s word is not in them.
This will in fact happen to them.

Coming Judgment

¹⁴Therefore, this is what the Lord God of Armies says:

Because you have spoken this word,
I am going to make my words
become fire in your mouth.^(BE)
These people are the wood,
and the fire will consume them.^(BF)
¹⁵I am about to bring a nation
from far away against you,^(BG)
house of Israel.
This is the Lord’s declaration.
It is an established nation,
an ancient nation,
a nation whose language you do not know
and whose speech you do not understand.^(BH)
¹⁶Their quiver is like an open grave;^(BI)
they are all warriors.
¹⁷They will consume your harvest and your food.^(BJ)
They will consume your sons and your daughters.
They will consume your flocks and your herds.
They will consume your vines and your fig trees.
With the sword they will destroy
your fortified cities^(BK) in which you trust.

¹⁸“But even in those days”—this is the Lord’s declaration—“I will not finish you off.^(BL) ¹⁹When people ask, ‘For what offense has the Lord our God done all these things to us?’ You will respond to them, ‘Just as you abandoned me^(BM) and served foreign gods in your land, so will you serve strangers in a land that is not yours.’^(BN)

²⁰“Declare this in the house of Jacob; proclaim it in Judah, saying:

²¹Hear this,
you foolish and senseless^[h] people.^(BO)
They have eyes, but they don’t see.
They have ears, but they don’t hear.^(BP)
²²Do you not fear me?
This is the Lord’s declaration.
Do you not tremble before me,
the one who set the sand as the boundary of the sea,
an enduring barrier that it cannot cross?^(BQ)
The waves surge, but they cannot prevail.
They roar but cannot pass over it.
²³But these people have stubborn and rebellious hearts.^(BR)
They have turned aside and have gone away.
²⁴They have not said to themselves,
‘Let’s fear the Lord our God,^(BS)
who gives the seasonal rains, both autumn and spring,^(BT)
who guarantees to us the fixed weeks of the harvest.’
²⁵Your guilty acts have diverted these things from you.
Your sins have withheld my bounty from you,^(BU)
²⁶for wicked men live among my people.
They watch like hunters^[i] lying in wait.^[j]^(BV)
They set a trap;^(BW)
they catch men.
²⁷Like a cage full of birds,
so their houses are full of deceit.^(BX)
Therefore they have grown powerful and rich.
²⁸They have become fat^(BY) and sleek.
They have also excelled in evil matters.
They have not taken up cases,
such as the case of the fatherless, so they might prosper,
and they have not defended the rights of the needy.^(BZ)
²⁹Should I not punish them for these things?
This is the Lord’s declaration.
Should I not avenge myself^(CA)
on such a nation as this?

³⁰An appalling, horrible thing
has taken place in the land.^(CB)
³¹The prophets prophesy falsely,^(CC)
and the priests rule by their own authority.
My people love it like this.
But what will you do at the end of it?^(CD)

Threatened Siege of Jerusalem

6 “Run for cover^(CE)
out of Jerusalem, Benjaminites.
Sound the ram’s horn^(CF) in Tekoa;^(CG)
raise a smoke signal^(CH) over Beth-haccherem,^[k]
for disaster threatens from the north,^(CI)
even a crushing blow.
²Though she is beautiful and delicate,
I will destroy^[l] Daughter Zion.
³Shepherds and their flocks will come against her;
they will pitch their tents all around her.^(CJ)
Each will pasture his own portion.
⁴Set them apart for war^(CK) against her;
rise up, let’s attack at noon.
Woe to us, for the day is passing;
the evening shadows grow long.
⁵Rise up, let’s attack by night.
Let us destroy her fortresses.”

⁶For this is what the Lord of Armies says:

Cut down the trees;^(CL)
raise a siege ramp against Jerusalem.
This city must be punished.
There is nothing but oppression within her.^(CM)
⁷As a well gushes out its water,
so she pours out her evil.^[m]
Violence and destruction^(CN) resound in her.
Sickness and wounds keep coming to my attention.
⁸Be warned, Jerusalem,
or I will turn away from you;^(CO)
I will make you a desolation,
a land without inhabitants.^(CP)

Wrath on Israel

⁹This is what the Lord of Armies says:

Glean the remnant of Israel^(CQ)
as thoroughly as a vine.
Pass your hand once more like a grape gatherer
over the branches.

¹⁰Who can I speak to and give such a warning^[n]
that they will listen?
Look, their ear is uncircumcised,^[o]^(CR)
so they cannot pay attention.
See, the word of the Lord has become contemptible to them—
they find no pleasure in it.^(CS)
¹¹But I am full of the Lord’s wrath;
I am tired of holding it back.^(CT)
Pour it out on the children in the street,^(CU)
on the gathering of young men as well.
For both husband and wife will be captured,
the old with the very old.^[p]
¹²Their houses will be turned over to others,^(CV)
their fields and wives as well,
for I will stretch out my hand^(CW)
against the inhabitants of the land.
This is the Lord’s declaration.

¹³For from the least to the greatest of them,^(CX)
everyone is making profit dishonestly.^(CY)
From prophet to priest,
everyone deals falsely.^(CZ)
¹⁴They have treated my people’s brokenness superficially,
claiming, “Peace, peace,”^(DA)
when there is no peace.
¹⁵Were they ashamed when they acted so detestably?
They weren’t at all ashamed.
They can no longer feel humiliation.^(DB)
Therefore, they will fall among the fallen.
When I punish them, they will collapse,^(DC)
says the Lord.

Colossians 1:18-2:7

¹⁸He is also the head of the body, the church;
he is the beginning,^(A)
the firstborn from the dead,^(B)
so that he might come to have
first place in everything.
¹⁹For God was pleased to have
all his fullness^(C) dwell in him,^(D)
²⁰and through him to reconcile
everything to himself,
whether things on earth or things in heaven,
by making peace^(E)

²¹Once you were alienated and hostile in your minds expressed in your evil actions. ²²But now he has reconciled you by his physical body through his death,^(H) to present you holy, faultless,^(I) and blameless before him^(J)— ²³if indeed you remain grounded and steadfast in the faith^(K) and are not shifted away from the hope^(L) of the gospel that you heard. Paul’s Ministry

²⁴Now I rejoice in my sufferings^(P) for you, and I am completing in my flesh what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions for his body,^(Q) that is, the church. ²⁵I have become its servant, according to God’s commission that was given to me for you, to make the word of God fully known, ²⁶the mystery hidden for ages and generations but now revealed to his saints. ²⁷God wanted to make known among the Gentiles the glorious wealth of this mystery, which is Christ^(R) in you, the hope^(S) of glory. ²⁸We proclaim him, warning and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone mature in Christ. ²⁹I labor for this, striving^(T) with his strength that works powerfully in me.^(U)

2 For I want you to know how greatly I am struggling^(V) for you, for those in Laodicea,^(W) and for all who have not seen me in person. ²I want their hearts to be encouraged^(X) and joined together in love, so that they may have all the riches of complete understanding and have the knowledge of God’s mystery^(Y)—Christ.^[b]^(Z) ³In him are hidden all the treasures of wisdom^(AA) and knowledge.^(AB)

Christ versus the Colossian Heresy

⁴I am saying this so that no one will deceive you with arguments that sound reasonable. ⁵For I may be absent in body, but I am with you in spirit,^(AC) rejoicing to see how well ordered you are and the strength of your faith in Christ.

⁶So then, just as you have received^(AD) Christ Jesus as Lord,^(AE) continue to live in him, ⁷being rooted and built up in him^(AF) and established in the faith, just as you were taught,^(AG) and overflowing with gratitude.

³¹Evil generation,
pay attention to the word of the Lord!
Have I been a wilderness to Israel
or a land of dense darkness?^(A)
Why do my people claim,
“We will go where we want;^[a]
we will no longer come to you”?
³²Can a young woman forget her jewelry^(B)
or a bride her wedding sash?
Yet my people have forgotten me^(C)
for countless days.
³³How skillfully you pursue love;
you also teach evil women your ways.
³⁴Moreover, your skirts are stained
with the blood of the innocent poor.^(D)
You did not catch them breaking and entering.^(E)
But in spite of all these things
³⁵you claim, “I am innocent.^(F)
His anger is sure to turn away from me.”
But I will certainly judge you
because you have said, “I have not sinned.”^(G)

Wages of Apostasy

3 If^[c] a man divorces his wife
and she leaves him to marry another,
can he ever return to her?^(L)
Wouldn’t such a land^[d] become totally defiled?
But you!
You have prostituted yourself with many partners^(M)—
can you return to me?^(N)
This is the Lord’s declaration.
²Look to the barren heights^(O) and see.
Where have you not been immoral?
You sat waiting for them beside the highways^(P)
like a nomad in the desert.
You have defiled the land
with your prostitution and wickedness.^(Q)
³This is why the showers haven’t come^(R)—
why there has been no spring rain.
You have the brazen look^(S) of a prostitute^[e]
and refuse to be ashamed.^(T)
⁴Haven’t you recently called to me, “My Father.^(U)
You were my friend in my youth.^(V)
⁵Will he bear a grudge forever?^(W)
Will he be endlessly infuriated?”
This is what you have said,
but you have done the evil things
you are capable of.

Unfaithful Israel, Treacherous Judah

⁶In the days of King Josiah the Lord asked me, “Have you seen what unfaithful Israel has done? She has ascended every high hill and gone under every green tree to prostitute herself there.^(X) ⁷I thought, ‘After she has done all these things, she will return to me.’^(Y) But she didn’t return, and her treacherous sister Judah^(Z) saw it. ⁸I^[f] observed that it was because unfaithful Israel had committed adultery that I had sent her away and had given her a certificate of divorce.^(AA) Nevertheless, her treacherous sister Judah was not afraid but also went and prostituted herself.^(AB) ⁹Indifferent to^[g] her prostitution, she defiled the land and committed adultery with stones^(AC) and trees.^(AD) ¹⁰Yet in spite of all this, her treacherous sister Judah didn’t return to me with all her heart^(AE)—only in pretense.”

¹¹The Lord announced to me, “Unfaithful Israel has shown herself more righteous than treacherous Judah.^(AF) ¹²Go, proclaim these words to the north, and say,

‘Return, unfaithful Israel.^(AG)
This is the Lord’s declaration.
I will not look on you with anger,^[h]
for I am unfailing in my love.^(AH)
This is the Lord’s declaration.
I will not be angry forever.^(AI)
¹³Only acknowledge your guilt^(AJ)—
you have rebelled against the Lord your God.^(AK)
You have scattered your favors to strangers
under every green tree^(AL)
and have not obeyed me.
This is the Lord’s declaration.

¹⁴“‘Return, you faithless children^(AM)—this is the Lord’s declaration—for I am your master,^[i]^(AN) and I will take you,^(AO) one from a city and two from a family, and I will bring you to Zion. ¹⁵I will give you shepherds who are loyal to me,^[j]^(AP) and they will shepherd you with knowledge and skill. ¹⁶When you multiply and increase in the land,^(AQ) in those days—this is the Lord’s declaration—no one will say again, “The ark of the Lord’s covenant.”^(AR) It will never come to mind, and no one will remember or miss it. Another one will not be made.^[k] ¹⁷At that time Jerusalem will be called The Lord’s Throne,^(AS) and all the nations will be gathered to it,^(AT) to the name of the Lord in Jerusalem.^(AU) They will cease to follow the stubbornness of their evil hearts. ¹⁸In those days the house of Judah will join with the house of Israel,^(AV) and they will come together from the land of the north to the land I have given your ancestors to inherit.’”^(AW)

True Repentance

¹⁹I thought, “How I long to make you my sons
and give you a desirable land,
the most beautiful inheritance^(AX) of all the nations.”
I thought, “You will call me ‘My Father’
and never turn away from me.”
²⁰However, as a woman may betray her lover,^[l]
so you have betrayed^(AY) me, house of Israel.
This is the Lord’s declaration.

²¹A sound is heard on the barren heights:
the children of Israel weeping and begging for mercy,
for they have perverted their way;
they have forgotten the Lord their God.^(AZ)

²²Return, you faithless children.
I will heal your unfaithfulness.^(BA)
“Here we are, coming to you,
for you are the Lord our God.

²³Surely, falsehood comes from the hills,
commotion from the mountains,^(BB)
but the salvation of Israel
is only in the Lord our God.^(BC)
²⁴From the time of our youth
the shameful one^[m] has consumed
what our fathers have worked for—
their flocks and their herds,
their sons and their daughters.
²⁵Let us lie down in our shame;
let our disgrace cover us.^(BD)
We have sinned against the Lord our God,^(BE)
both we and our fathers,
from the time of our youth even to this day.^(BF)
We have not obeyed the Lord our God.”

Blessing or Curse

4 If you return,^[n] Israel—
this is the Lord’s declaration—
you will return to me,^(BG)
if you remove your abhorrent idols^(BH)
from my presence
and do not waver,
²then you can swear, “As the Lord lives,”^(BI)
in truth,^(BJ) in justice, and in righteousness,^(BK)
then the nations will be blessed^[o] by him^(BL)
and will pride themselves in him.^(BM)

³For this is what the Lord says to the men of Judah and Jerusalem:

Break up the unplowed ground;^(BN)
do not sow among the thorns.^(BO)
⁴Circumcise yourselves to the Lord;
remove the foreskin of your hearts,^(BP)
men of Judah and residents of Jerusalem.
Otherwise, my wrath will break out like fire
and burn with no one to extinguish it^(BQ)
because of your evil deeds.

Judgment from the North

⁵Declare in Judah, proclaim in Jerusalem, and say:

Blow the ram’s horn throughout the land.^(BR)
Cry out loudly and say:
Assemble yourselves,
and let’s flee to the fortified cities.
⁶Lift up a signal flag toward Zion.^(BS)
Run for cover! Don’t stand still!
For I am bringing disaster from the north—
a crushing blow.^(BT)
⁷A lion has gone up from his thicket;^(BU)
a destroyer of nations has set out.
He has left his lair
to make your land a waste.
Your cities will be reduced to uninhabited ruins.^(BV)
⁸Because of this, put on sackcloth;
mourn and wail,^(BW)
for the Lord’s burning anger^(BX)
has not turned away from us.

⁹“On that day”—this is the Lord’s declaration—“the king and the officials will lose their courage. The priests will tremble in fear, and the prophets will be scared speechless.”

¹⁰I said, “Oh no, Lord God, you have certainly deceived^(BY) this people and Jerusalem, by announcing, ‘You will have peace,’^(BZ) while a sword is at^[p] our throats.”

¹¹“At that time it will be said to this people and to Jerusalem, ‘A searing wind^(CA) blows from the barren heights in the wilderness on the way to my dear^[q] people. It comes not to winnow or to sift; ¹²a wind too strong for this comes at my call.^[r] Now I will also pronounce judgments against them.’”^(CB)

¹³Look, he advances like clouds;^(CC)
his chariots are like a storm.^(CD)
His horses are swifter than eagles.^(CE)
Woe to us, for we are ruined!^(CF)
¹⁴Wash the evil from your heart,^(CG) Jerusalem,
so that you will be delivered.
How long will you harbor
malicious thoughts?^(CH)
¹⁵For a voice announces from Dan,
proclaiming malice from Mount Ephraim.
¹⁶Warn the nations: Look!
Proclaim to Jerusalem:
Those who besiege are coming
from a distant land;^(CI)
they raise their voices
against the cities of Judah.
¹⁷They have her surrounded^(CJ)
like those who guard a field,
because she has rebelled against me.^(CK)
This is the Lord’s declaration.
¹⁸Your way and your actions
have brought this on you.^(CL)
This is your punishment. It is very bitter,
because it has reached your heart!

Greeting

1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by God’s will,^(A) and Timothy^(B) our brother:

²To the saints in Christ at Colossae, who are faithful brothers and sisters.

Grace to you and peace from God our Father.^[a]

Thanksgiving

³We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you, ⁴for we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love you have for all the saints ⁵because of the hope reserved for you in heaven. You have already heard about this hope in the word of truth,^(C) the gospel ⁶that has come to you. It is bearing fruit^(D) and growing all over the world,^(E) just as it has among you since the day you heard it and came to truly appreciate^(F) God’s grace.^[b]^(G) ⁷You learned this from Epaphras,^(H) our dearly loved fellow servant. Jeremiah 1:1-2:30

1 The words of Jeremiah,^(A) the son of Hilkiah, one of the priests living in Anathoth^(B) in the territory of Benjamin. ²The word of the Lord came to him in the thirteenth year of the reign of Josiah^(C) son of Amon, king of Judah. ³It also came throughout the days of Jehoiakim^(D) son of Josiah, king of Judah, until the fifth month of the eleventh year of Zedekiah^(E) son of Josiah, king of Judah, when the people of Jerusalem went into exile.

The Call of Jeremiah

⁴The word of the Lord came to me:

⁵I chose you before I formed you in the womb;
I set you apart before you were born.^(F)
I appointed you a prophet to the nations.^(G)

⁶But I protested, “Oh no, Lord God! Look, I don’t know how to speak^(H) since I am only a youth.”^(I)

⁷Then the Lord said to me:

Do not say, “I am only a youth,”^(J)
for you will go to everyone I send you to
and speak whatever I tell you.^(K)
⁸Do not be afraid of anyone,^(L)
for I will be with you to rescue you.^(M)
This is the Lord’s declaration.

⁹Then the Lord reached out his hand, touched my mouth,^(N) and told me:

I have now filled your mouth with my words.^(O)
¹⁰See, I have appointed you today
over nations and kingdoms
to uproot and tear down,
to destroy and demolish,^(P)
to build and plant.^(Q)

Two Visions

¹¹Then the word of the Lord came to me, asking, “What do you see, Jeremiah?” ^(R)

I replied, “I see a branch of an almond tree.”

¹²The Lord said to me, “You have seen correctly, for I watch over^[a] my word to accomplish it.”^(S) ¹³Again the word of the Lord came to me asking, “What do you see?”

And I replied, “I see a boiling pot,^(T) its lip tilted from the north to the south.”

¹⁴Then the Lord said to me, “Disaster will be poured out^[b] from the north^(U) on all who live in the land. ¹⁵Indeed, I am about to summon all the clans and kingdoms of the north.”^(V)

This is the Lord’s declaration.

They will come, and each king will set up his throne
at the entrance to Jerusalem’s gates.
They will attack all her surrounding walls
and all the other cities of Judah.

¹⁶“I will pronounce my judgments against them for all the evil they did when they abandoned me to burn incense to other gods and to worship the works of their own hands.^(W)

¹⁷“Now, get ready. Stand up and tell them everything that I command you. Do not be intimidated by them^(X) or I will cause you to cower before them. ¹⁸Today, I am the one who has made you a fortified city,^(Y) an iron pillar, and bronze walls^(Z) against the whole land—against the kings of Judah, its officials, its priests, and the population. ¹⁹They will fight against you but never prevail over you,^(AA) since I am with you to rescue you.”^(AB)

Israel Accused of Apostasy

2 The word of the Lord came to me: ²“Go and announce directly to Jerusalem that this is what the Lord says:

I remember the loyalty of your youth,^(AC)
your love as a bride—
how you followed me in the wilderness,
in a land not sown.
³Israel was holy to the Lord,^(AD)
the firstfruits of his harvest.^(AE)
All who ate of it found themselves guilty;^(AF)
disaster came on them.”
This is the Lord’s declaration.

⁴Hear the word of the Lord, house of Jacob
and all families of the house of Israel.
⁵This is what the Lord says:
What fault did your fathers find in me^(AG)
that they went so far from me,
followed worthless idols,^(AH)
and became worthless themselves?^(AI)
⁶They stopped asking, “Where is the Lord^(AJ)
who brought us from the land of Egypt,
who led us through the wilderness,^(AK)
through a land of deserts and ravines,
through a land of drought and darkness,^[c]
a land no one traveled through
and where no one lived?”
⁷I brought you to a fertile land^(AL)
to eat its fruit and bounty,
but after you entered, you defiled my land;^(AM)
you made my inheritance^(AN) detestable.
⁸The priests quit asking, “Where is the Lord?”
The experts in the law no longer knew me,^(AO)
and the rulers^(AP) rebelled against me.
The prophets prophesied by^[d] Baal^(AQ)
and followed useless idols.^(AR)

⁹Therefore, I will bring a case against you again.
This is the Lord’s declaration.
I will bring a case against your children’s children.^(AS)
¹⁰Cross over to the coasts of Cyprus^[e]^(AT) and take a look.
Send someone to Kedar^(AU) and consider carefully;
see if there has ever been anything like this:
¹¹Has a nation ever exchanged its gods?^(AV)
(But they were not gods!^(AW))
Yet my people have exchanged their^[f] Glory
for useless idols.^(AX)
¹²Be appalled at this, heavens;^(AY)
be shocked and utterly desolated!
This is the Lord’s declaration.

¹³For my people have committed a double evil:
They have abandoned me,^(AZ)
the fountain of living water,^(BA)
and dug cisterns for themselves—
cracked cisterns that cannot hold water.^(BB)

Consequences of Apostasy

¹⁴Is Israel a slave?
Was he born into slavery?^[g]
Why else has he become a prey?
¹⁵The young lions have roared at him;^(BC)
they have roared loudly.
They have laid waste his land.^(BD)
His cities are in ruins, without inhabitants.
¹⁶The men of Memphis and Tahpanhes^(BE)
have also broken your skull.
¹⁷Have you not brought this on yourself^(BF)
by abandoning the Lord your God
while he was leading you along the way?
¹⁸Now what will you gain
by traveling along the way to Egypt^(BG)
to drink the water of the Nile?^[h]
What will you gain
by traveling along the way to Assyria^(BH)
to drink the water of the Euphrates?^(BI)
¹⁹Your own evil will discipline you;^(BJ)
your own apostasies will reprimand you.
Recognize^[i] how evil and bitter^(BK) it is
for you to abandon the Lord your God
and to have no fear of me.
This is the declaration of the Lord God of Armies.

²⁰For long ago I^[j] broke your yoke;^(BL)
I^[k] tore off your chains.
You insisted, “I will not serve!”
On every high hill
and under every green tree^(BM)
you lay down like a prostitute.^(BN)

²¹I planted you, a choice vine^(BO)
from the very best seed.
How then could you turn into
a degenerate, foreign vine?^(BP)

²²Even if you wash with lye
and use a great amount of bleach,^[l]^(BQ)
the stain of your iniquity is still in front of me.^(BR)
This is the Lord God’s declaration.
²³How can you protest, “I am not defiled;
I have not followed the Baals”?^(BS)
Look at your behavior in the valley;
acknowledge what you have done.^(BT)
You are a swift young camel
twisting and turning on her way,
²⁴a wild donkey^(BU) at home^[m] in the wilderness.
She sniffs the wind in the heat of her desire.
Who can control her passion?
All who look for her will not become weary;
they will find her in her mating season.^[n]
²⁵Keep your feet from going bare
and your throat from thirst.
But you say, “It’s hopeless;^(BV)
I love strangers,^(BW)
and I will continue to follow them.”

²⁶Like the shame of a thief when he is caught,
so the house of Israel has been put to shame.^(BX)
They, their kings, their officials,
their priests, and their prophets^(BY)
²⁷say to a tree, “You are my father,”
and to a stone, “You gave birth to me.”
For they have turned their back to me

Practical Counsel

²I urge Euodia and I urge Syntyche to agree in the Lord. ³Yes, I also ask you, true partner,^[a] to help these women who have contended for the gospel at my side, along with Clement and the rest of my coworkers whose names are in the book of life. ⁴Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! ⁵Let your graciousness^[b] be known to everyone. The Lord is near.^(C) ⁶Don’t worry about anything, but in everything, through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. ⁷And the peace of God, which surpasses^(D) all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.^(E)

66 This is what the Lord says:

Heaven^(A) is my throne,^(B)
and earth is my footstool.^(C)
Where could you possibly build a house for me?
And where would my resting place be?^(D)
²My hand made all these things,
and so they all came into being.
This is the Lord’s declaration.
I will look favorably on this kind of person:
one who is humble,^(E) submissive^[a] in spirit,^(F)
and trembles at my word.
³One person slaughters an ox, another kills a person;
one person sacrifices a lamb, another breaks a dog’s neck;
one person offers a grain offering, another offers pig’s blood;
one person offers incense, another praises an idol—
all these have chosen their ways
and delight in their abhorrent practices.^(G)
⁴So I will choose their punishment,
and I will bring on them what they dread
because I called and no one answered;
I spoke and they did not listen;
they did what was evil in my sight
and chose what I did not delight in.^(H)
⁵You who tremble at his word,^(I)
hear the word of the Lord:^(J)
“Your brothers who hate and exclude you
for my name’s sake have said,^(K)
‘Let the Lord be glorified
so that we can see your joy!’

Can a land be born in one day
or a nation be delivered in an instant?

⁹“Will I bring a baby to the point of birth
and not deliver it?”
says the Lord;
“or will I who deliver, close the womb?”
says your God.
¹⁰Be glad for Jerusalem and rejoice over her,

Rejoice greatly with her,
all who mourn over her—
¹¹so that you may nurse and be satisfied
from her comforting breast
and drink deeply and delight yourselves
from her glorious breasts.

¹²For this is what the Lord says:

I will make peace flow to her like a river,^(O)
and the wealth^[b] of nations like a flood;^(P)
you will nurse and be carried on her hip^(Q)
and bounced on her lap.
¹³As a mother comforts her son,
so I will comfort you,^(R)
and you will be comforted in Jerusalem.

then the Lord’s power will be revealed to his servants,
but he will show his wrath against his enemies.

¹⁸“Knowing^[f] their works and their thoughts, I have come to gather all nations and languages;^(X) they will come and see my glory. ¹⁹I will establish a sign among them, and I will send survivors from them to the nations—to Tarshish, Put,^[g] Lud (who are archers), Tubal, Javan,^(Y) and the coasts and islands far away—who have not heard about me or seen my glory. And they will proclaim my glory among the nations.^(Z) ²⁰They will bring all your brothers from all the nations as a gift to the Lord on horses and chariots, in litters, and on mules and camels, to my holy mountain Jerusalem,”^(AA) says the Lord, “just as the Israelites bring an offering in a clean vessel to the house of the Lord. ²¹I will also take some of them as priests and Levites,”^(AB) says the Lord.

²²“For just as the new heavens and the new earth,^(AC)
which I will make,
will remain before me”—
this is the Lord’s declaration—
“so your offspring and your name will remain.
²³All mankind will come to worship me
from one New Moon to another
and from one Sabbath to another,”
says the Lord.

Reaching Forward to God’s Goal

But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind^(Q) and reaching forward to what is ahead, ¹⁴I pursue as my goal the prize promised by God’s heavenly^[c] call in Christ Jesus.^(R) ¹⁵Therefore, let all of us who are mature think this way.
