Lamentations 4-5

Distress of the Siege Described

How dark and dim the gold has become,
How the pure gold has changed!
The sacred stones [of the temple] are poured out and scattered
At the head of every street.

The [noble and] precious sons of Zion,
[Once] worth their weight in fine gold,
How they are regarded [merely] as earthen jars,
The work of a potter’s hands!(A)

Even the jackals offer the breast,
They nurse their young;
But the daughter of my people has become cruel
Like ostriches in the wilderness [that desert their young].

The tongue of the infant clings
To the roof of its mouth because of thirst;
The little ones ask for food,
But no one gives it to them.

Those who feasted on delicacies
Are perishing in the streets;
Those reared in purple [as nobles]
Embrace ash heaps.

For the [punishment of the] wickedness of the daughter of my people [Jerusalem]
Is greater than the [punishment for the] sin of Sodom,
Which was overthrown in a moment,
And no hands were turned toward her [to offer help].(B)

Her princes were purer than snow,
They were whiter than milk [in appearance];
They were more ruddy in body than rubies,
Their polishing was like lapis lazuli (sapphire).

Their appearance is [now] blacker than soot [because of the prolonged famine];
They are not recognized in the streets;
Their skin clings to their bones;
It is withered, and it has become [dry] like wood.

Those killed with the sword
Are more fortunate than those killed with hunger;
For the hungry pine and ebb away,
For the lack of the fruits of the field.
10
The hands of compassionate women
Boiled their own children;
They became food for them
Because of the destruction of the daughter of my people [Judah].
11
The Lord has fulfilled His wrath;
He has poured out His fierce anger
And has kindled a fire in Zion
That has consumed her foundations.
12
The kings of the earth did not believe,
Nor did any of the inhabitants of the earth,
That the adversary (oppressor) and enemy
Could enter the gates of Jerusalem.
13
Because of the sins of her [counterfeit] prophets
And the wickedness of her [unfaithful] priests,
Who have shed in her midst
The blood of the just and righteous;
14
They wandered, blind, in the streets;
They were defiled with blood
So that no one could touch their garments.
15
People cried to them, “Go away! Unclean!
Depart! Depart! Do not touch!”
So they fled, then they wandered [as fugitives];
People among the nations said,
“They shall not stay here any longer with us.”
16
The presence of the Lord scattered them [among the nations];
He will not continue to look after them.
They did not honor the priests;
They did not favor the elders.
17
[And as for us,] yet our eyes failed,
Looking in vain for help.
Watching [from the towers] we watched
For a nation that could not save.(C)
18
The enemy hunted our steps,
So that we could not walk in our streets;
Our end drew near,
Our days were finished
For our end had come.
19
Our pursuers were swifter
Than the eagles of the sky;
They pursued us on the mountains,
They waited in ambush for us in the wilderness.
20
The breath of our nostrils, the anointed of the Lord [our king],
Was captured in their snares,
He of whom we had said, “Under his shadow
We shall live among the nations.”
21
Rejoice and be glad, O Daughter of Edom,
Who lives in the land of Uz.
But the cup [of the wine of God’s wrath] will pass to you as well;
You will become drunk and make yourself naked.(D)
22
The punishment of your sin has been completed, O Daughter of Zion;
The Lord will no longer send you into exile.
But He will punish your sin, O Daughter of Edom;
He will expose your sins.(E)

A Prayer for Mercy

O Lord, remember what has come upon us;
Look, and see our reproach (national disgrace)!

Our inheritance has been turned over to strangers,
Our houses to foreigners.

We have become orphans without a father;
Our mothers are like widows.

We have to pay for our drinking water;
Our wood comes to us at a price.

Our pursuers are at our necks;
We are worn out, there is no rest for us.

We have given the hand [as a pledge of fidelity and submission] to Egypt and Assyria to get enough bread.

Our fathers sinned, and are no more;
It is [a]we who have carried their sin.(F)

Servants rule over us;
There is no one to rescue us out of their hand.(G)

We get our bread at the risk of our lives
Because of the sword [of the Arabs] in the wilderness [who may attack if we go out to harvest the crop].
10
Our skin is as hot as [the heat of] an oven
Because of the burning heat of [the fever of] famine.
11
They ravished the women in Zion,
The virgins in the cities of Judah.
12
Princes were hung by their hands;
Elders were not respected.
13
Young men worked at the grinding mill,
And boys fell [staggering] under loads of wood.
14
Elders are gone from the gate;
Young men from their music.
15
The joy of our hearts has ended;
Our dancing has been turned into mourning.
16
The crown has fallen from our head [our honor is covered with dust]!
Woe to us, for we have sinned!
17
Because of this our heart is faint,
Because of these things our eyes are dim.
18
As for Mount Zion, which lies desolate,
Foxes and the jackals prowl over it.

19
But You, O Lord, reign forever;
Your throne endures from generation to [all] generations.
20
Why do You forget us forever?
Why do You forsake us so long?
21
Return us to You, O Lord, so that we may be restored;
Renew our days as of old,
22
Unless You have utterly rejected us
And are exceedingly angry with us.

  1. Lamentations 5:7 Both forefathers and sons were responsible for the disaster that had come on Jerusalem. This generation was equally deserving of punishment.

Hebrews 2

Give Heed

[a]For this reason [that is, because of God’s final revelation in His Son Jesus and because of Jesus’ superiority to the angels] we must pay much closer attention than ever to the things that we have heard, so that we do not [in any way] drift away from truth. For if the message given [b]through angels [the Law given to Moses] was authentic and unalterable, and every violation and disobedient act received an appropriate penalty, how will we escape [the penalty] if we ignore such a great salvation [the gospel, the new covenant]? For it was spoken at first by the Lord, and it was confirmed to us and proved authentic by those who personally heard [Him speak], [and besides this evidence] God also testifying with them [confirming the message of salvation], both by signs and wonders and by various miracles [carried out by Jesus and the apostles] and by [granting to believers the] gifts of the Holy Spirit according to His own will.

Earth Subject to Man

It was not to angels that God subjected the [inhabited] world of the future [when Christ reigns], about which we are speaking. But one has [solemnly] testified somewhere [in Scripture], saying,

What is man, that You are mindful of him,
Or the son of man, that You graciously care for him?

You have made him for a little while lower [in status] than the angels;
You have crowned him with glory and honor,
[c]And set him over the works of Your hands;

You have put all things in subjection under his feet [confirming his supremacy].”

Now in putting all things in subjection to man, He left nothing outside his control. But at present we do not yet see all things subjected to him.(A)

Jesus Briefly Humbled

But we do see Jesus, who was made lower than the angels for a little while [by taking on the limitations of humanity], crowned with glory and honor because of His suffering of death, so that by the grace of God [extended to sinners] He might experience death for [the sins of] everyone.

10 For it was fitting for God [that is, an act worthy of His divine nature] that He, for whose sake are all things, and through whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory, should make the [d]author and founder of their salvation perfect through suffering [bringing to maturity the human experience necessary for Him to be perfectly equipped for His office as High Priest]. 11 Both Jesus who sanctifies and those who are sanctified [that is, spiritually transformed, made holy, and set apart for God’s purpose] are all from one Father; for this reason He is not ashamed to call them [e]brothers and sisters, 12 saying,

“I will declare Your (the Father’s) name to My brethren (believers),
In the midst of the congregation I will sing Your praise.”(B)

13 And again [[f]He says],

My trust and confident hope will be placed in Him.”

And again,

Here I am, I and the children whom God has given Me.”(C)

14 Therefore, since [these His] children share in flesh and blood [the physical nature of mankind], He Himself in a similar manner also shared in the same [physical nature, but without sin], so that through [experiencing] death He might make powerless (ineffective, impotent) him who had the power of death—that is, the devil— 15 and [that He] might free all those who through [the haunting] fear of death were held in slavery throughout their lives. 16 For, as we all know, He (Christ) does not take hold of [the fallen] angels [to give them a helping hand], but He does take hold of [the fallen] descendants of Abraham [extending to them His hand of deliverance].(D) 17 Therefore, it was essential that He had to be made like His brothers (mankind) in every respect, so that He might [by experience] become a merciful and faithful High Priest in things related to God, to make atonement (propitiation) for the people’s sins [thereby wiping away the sin, satisfying divine justice, and providing a way of reconciliation between God and mankind]. 18 Because He Himself [in His humanity] has suffered in being tempted, He is able to help and provide immediate assistance to those who are being tempted and exposed to suffering.

Footnotes:

  1. Hebrews 2:1 This refers back to all of ch 1, not just the final verse.
  2. Hebrews 2:2 It was a tradition in Judaism that angels, whom the Jews highly regarded, had an important role in God’s giving of the Law to Moses. See Acts 7:38; Gal 3:19.
  3. Hebrews 2:7 Two early mss do not contain “And...hands.”
  4. Hebrews 2:10 Or pioneer, originator, champion.
  5. Hebrews 2:11 Lit brethren.
  6. Hebrews 2:13 By placing these two OT quotations on the lips of Jesus the author illustrates: 1) his high view of Scripture, and 2) that he views even written Scripture as the words of Jesus.

Psalm 103

Praise for the Lord’s Mercies.

A Psalm of David.

103 Bless and affectionately praise the Lord, O my soul,
And all that is [deep] within me, bless His holy name.

Bless and affectionately praise the Lord, O my soul,
And do not forget any of His benefits;

Who forgives all your sins,
Who heals all your diseases;

Who redeems your life from the pit,
Who crowns you [lavishly] with lovingkindness and tender mercy;

Who satisfies your years with good things,
So that your youth is renewed like the [soaring] eagle.(A)

The Lord executes righteousness
And justice for all the oppressed.

He made known His ways [of righteousness and justice] to Moses,
His acts to the children of Israel.

The Lord is merciful and gracious,
Slow to anger and abounding in compassion and lovingkindness.(B)

He will not always strive with us,
Nor will He keep His anger forever.
10
He has not dealt with us according to our sins [as we deserve],
Nor rewarded us [with punishment] according to our wickedness.
11
For as the heavens are high above the earth,
So great is His lovingkindness toward those who fear and worship Him [with awe-filled respect and deepest reverence].
12
As far as the east is from the west,
So far has He removed our transgressions from us.
13
Just as a father loves his children,
So the Lord loves those who fear and worship Him [with awe-filled respect and deepest reverence].
14
For He knows our [mortal] frame;
He remembers that we are [merely] dust.

15
As for man, his days are like grass;
Like a flower of the field, so he flourishes.
16
For the wind passes over it and it is no more,
And its place knows it no longer.
17
But the lovingkindness of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting on those who [reverently] fear Him,
And His righteousness to children’s children,(C)
18
To those who honor and keep His covenant,
And remember to do His commandments [imprinting His word on their hearts].

19
The Lord has established His throne in the heavens,
And His sovereignty rules over all [the universe].
20
Bless the Lord, you His angels,
You mighty ones who do His commandments,
Obeying the voice of His word!
21
Bless the Lord, all you His hosts,
You who serve Him and do His will.
22
Bless the Lord, all you works of His, in all places of His dominion;
Bless and affectionately praise the Lord, O my soul!

Proverbs 26:23

Like a [common] clay vessel covered with the silver dross [making it appear silver when it has no real value]
Are burning lips [murmuring manipulative words] and a wicked heart.

Lamentations 3

Jeremiah Shares Israel’s Affliction

I am [Jeremiah] the man who has seen affliction
Because of the rod of His wrath.

He has led me and made me walk
In darkness and not in light.

Surely He has turned His hand against me
Repeatedly all the day.

He has caused my flesh and my skin to waste away;
He has shattered my bones.

He has besieged and surrounded me with bitterness and hardship.

He has made me live in dark places
Like those who have long been dead.

He walled me in so that I cannot get out;
He has weighted down my chain.

Even when I cry out and shout for help,
He shuts out my prayer.

He has blocked my ways with cut stone;
He has made my paths crooked.
10
He is to me like a bear lying in wait,
And like a lion [hiding] in secret places.
11
He has turned aside my ways and torn me in pieces;
He has made me desolate.
12
He has bent His bow
And set me as a target for the arrow.
13
He has caused the arrows of His quiver
To enter my inner parts.
14
I have become the [object of] ridicule to all my people,
And [the subject of] their mocking song all the day.
15
He has filled me with bitterness;
He has made me drunk with wormwood (bitterness).
16
He has broken my teeth with gravel;
He has [covered me with ashes and] made me cower in the dust.
17
My soul has been cast far away from peace;
I have forgotten happiness.
18
So I say, “My strength has perished
And so has my hope and expectation from the Lord.”

Hope of Relief in God’s Mercy

19
Remember [O Lord] my affliction and my wandering, the wormwood and the gall (bitterness).
20
My soul continually remembers them
And is bowed down within me.
21
But this I call to mind,
Therefore I have hope.
22
It is because of the Lord’s lovingkindnesses that we are not consumed,
Because His [tender] compassions never fail.(A)
23
They are new every morning;
Great and beyond measure is Your faithfulness.(B)
24
“The Lord is my portion and my inheritance,” says my soul;
“Therefore I have hope in Him and wait expectantly for Him.”(C)
25
The Lord is good to those who wait [confidently] for Him,
To those who seek Him [on the authority of God’s word].
26
It is good that one waits quietly
For the salvation of the Lord.
27
It is good for a man that he should bear
The yoke [of godly discipline] in his youth.
28
Let him sit alone [in hope] and keep quiet,
Because God has laid it on him [for his benefit].(D)
29
Let him put his mouth in the dust [in recognition of his unworthiness];
There may yet be hope.(E)
30
Let him give his cheek to the one who strikes him;
Let him be filled with reproach.
31
For the Lord will not reject forever,(F)
32
For if He causes grief,
Then He will have compassion
According to His abundant lovingkindness and tender mercy.
33
For He does not afflict willingly and from His heart
Or grieve the children of men.(G)
34
To trample and crush under His feet
All the prisoners of the land,
35
To deprive a man of justice
In the presence of the Most High,
36
To defraud a man in his lawsuit—
The Lord does not approve of these things.
37
Who is there who speaks and it comes to pass,
Unless the Lord has authorized and commanded it?
38
Is it not from the mouth of the Most High
That both adversity (misfortune) and good (prosperity, happiness) proceed?

39
Why should any living mortal, or any man,
Complain [of punishment] in view of his sins?
40
Let us test and examine our ways,
And let us return to the Lord.
41
Let us lift up our hearts and our hands [in prayer]
Toward God in heaven;
42
We have transgressed and rebelled,
You have not pardoned.
43
You have covered Yourself with anger
And pursued us;
You have slain [without pity] and have not spared.
44
You have covered Yourself with a cloud
So that no prayer can pass through.
45
You have made us scum and refuse
Among the peoples (Gentile nations).
46
All our enemies have gaped at us.
47
Panic and pitfall (traps, danger) have come on us,
Devastation and destruction.
48
My eyes overflow with streams of tears
Because of the destruction of the daughter of my people (Jerusalem).
49
My eyes overflow unceasingly,
Without stopping,
50
Until the Lord looks down
And sees from heaven.
51
My eyes [see things that] bring pain to my soul
Because of all the daughters of my city.
52
Without cause my enemies
Hunted me down like a bird;
53
They silenced me in the pit
And placed a stone over me.(H)
54
The waters ran down on my head;
I said, “I am cut off (destroyed)!”
55
I called on Your name, O Lord,
Out of the lowest pit.(I)
56
You have heard my voice,
“Do not hide Your ear from my prayer for relief,
From my cry for help.”
57
You drew near on the day I called to You;
You said, “Do not fear.”(J)
58
O Lord, You have pleaded my soul’s cause [You have guided my way and protected me];
You have rescued and redeemed my life.
59
O Lord, You have seen the wrong [done to me];
Judge my case.
60
You have seen all their vengeance,
All their schemes against me.
61
You have heard their reproach, O Lord,
And all their schemes against me.
62
The lips and whispering of my assailants
Are against me all day long.
63
Look at their sitting and their rising [their actions and secret counsels];
I am their mocking song [the subject of their ridicule].(K)
64
You will repay them, O Lord,
According to the work of their hands.
65
You will harden their hearts;
Your curse will be upon them.
66
You will pursue them in anger and destroy them
From under the heavens of the Lord.

Hebrews 1

God’s Final Word in His Son

God, having spoken to the fathers long ago in [the voices and writings of] the prophets in many separate revelations [each of which set forth a portion of the truth], and in many ways, has in these last days spoken [with finality] to us in [the person of One who is by His character and nature] His Son [namely Jesus], whom He appointed heir and lawful owner of all things, through whom also He created the universe [that is, the universe as a space-time-matter continuum]. The Son is the radiance and only expression of the glory of [our awesome] God [reflecting God’s [a]Shekinah glory, the Light-being, the brilliant light of the divine], and the exact representation and perfect imprint of His [Father’s] essence, and upholding and maintaining and propelling all things [the entire physical and spiritual universe] by His powerful word [carrying the universe along to its predetermined goal]. When He [Himself and no other] had [by offering Himself on the cross as a sacrifice for sin] accomplished purification from sins and established our freedom from guilt, He sat down [revealing His completed work] at the right hand of the Majesty on high [revealing His Divine authority], having become as much superior to angels, since He has inherited a more excellent and glorious [b]name than they [that is, Son—the name above all names].

For to which of the angels did the Father ever say,

You are My Son,
Today I have begotten (fathered) You [established You as a Son, with kingly dignity]”?

And again [did He ever say to the angels],

I shall be a Father to Him
And He shall be a Son to Me”?(A)

[c]And when He again brings the firstborn [highest-ranking Son] into the world, He says,

And all the angels of God are to worship Him.”(B)

And concerning the angels He says,

Who makes His angels winds,
And His ministering servants flames of fire [to do His bidding].”(C)

But about the Son [the Father says to Him],

Your throne, [d]O God, is forever and ever,
And the [e]scepter of [absolute] righteousness is the scepter of [f]His kingdom.

You have loved righteousness [integrity, virtue, uprightness in purpose] and have hated lawlessness [injustice, sin].
Therefore God, Your God, Has anointed You
With the oil of gladness above Your companions.”(D)

10 And,

[g]You, Lord, laid the foundation of the earth in the beginning,
And the heavens are the works of Your hands;
11
They will perish, but You remain [forever and ever];
And they will all wear out like a garment,
12
And like a robe You will roll them up;
Like a garment they will be changed.
But [h]You are the same [forever],
And Your years will never end.”(E)

13 But to which of the angels has the Father ever said,

Sit at My right hand [together with me in royal dignity],
Until I make your enemies
A footstool for your feet [in triumphant conquest]”?(F)

14 Are not all the angels ministering spirits sent out [by God] to serve (accompany, protect) those who will inherit salvation? [Of course they are!]

Footnotes:

  1. Hebrews 1:3 The word “Shekinah” does not appear in Scripture, but has been used by both Christians and Jews to describe the visible divine Presence of God, in such things as the burning bush, the cloud and the pillar of fire that led the Hebrews in the wilderness, and the Presence of God that rested between the cherubim over the mercy seat of the ark.
  2. Hebrews 1:4 In Greek “name” occurs last in this verse to emphasize that Jesus alone bears the name Son. No angel is superior to the Son.
  3. Hebrews 1:6 Most likely a reference to the second coming of Christ when He will be acknowledged as divine and worshiped as the Son of God. Another view suggests that this may be a reference to His incarnation as Jesus of Nazareth.
  4. Hebrews 1:8 The Son is recognized as deity by being addressed by the Father as “God.”
  5. Hebrews 1:8 I.e. symbol of authority.
  6. Hebrews 1:8 Late mss read Your.
  7. Hebrews 1:10 The deity of Jesus is acclaimed by the designation “You, Lord.”
  8. Hebrews 1:12 Since He is deity, the eternality of Jesus is recognized.

Psalm 102

Prayer of an Afflicted Man for Mercy on Himself and on Zion.

A Prayer of the afflicted; when he is overwhelmed and pours out his complaint to God.

102 Hear my prayer, O Lord,
And let my cry for help come to You!

Do not hide Your face from me in the day of my distress!
Incline Your ear to me;
In the day when I call, answer me quickly.

For my days have vanished in smoke,
And my bones have been scorched like a hearth.

My heart has been struck like grass and withered,
Indeed, [absorbed by my heartache] I forget to eat my food.

Because of the sound of my groaning [in suffering and trouble]
My bones cling to my flesh.

I am like a [mournful] [a]vulture of the wilderness;
I am like a [desolate] owl of the wasteland.

I am sleepless and lie awake [mourning],
I have become like a lonely bird on a housetop.

My enemies taunt me all day long;
Those who ridicule me use my name as a curse.

For I have eaten ashes like bread,
And have mingled my drink with tears(A)
10
Because of Your indignation and Your wrath,
For You have lifted me up and thrown me away.
11
My days are like an evening shadow that lengthens and vanishes [with the sun];
And as for me, I wither away like grass.

12
But You, O Lord, are enthroned forever [ruling eternally as sovereign];
And [the fame and glory of] Your name [endures] to all generations.
13
You will arise and have compassion on Zion,
For it is time to be gracious and show favor to her;
Yes, the appointed time [the moment designated] has come.(B)
14
For Your servants find [melancholy] pleasure in the stones [of her ruins]
And feel pity for her dust.
15
So the nations will fear the name of the Lord,
And all the kings of the earth [will recognize] Your glory.(C)
16
For the Lord has built up Zion;
He has appeared in His glory and brilliance;
17
He has regarded the prayer of the destitute,
And has not despised their prayer.

18
Let this be recorded for the generation to come,
That a people yet to be created will praise the Lord.
19
For He looked down from His holy height [of His sanctuary],
From heaven the Lord gazed on the earth,
20
To hear the sighing of the prisoner,
To set free those who were doomed to death,
21
So that people may declare the name of the Lord in Zion
And His praise in Jerusalem,
22
When the peoples are gathered together,
And the kingdoms, to serve the Lord.

23
He has exhausted my strength [humbling me with sorrow] in the way;
He has shortened my days.
24
I said, “O my God, do not take me away in the midst of my days;
Your years are [eternal] throughout all generations.
25
“At the beginning You founded the earth;
The heavens are the work of Your hands.
26
“Even they will perish, but You endure;
Yes, all of them will wear out like a garment.
Like clothing You will change them and they shall be changed.
27
“But You remain the same,
And Your years will never end.(D)
28
“The children of Your servants will continue,
And their descendants will be established before You.”

21
Like charcoal to hot embers and wood to fire,
So is a contentious man to kindle strife.(A)

They go down into the innermost chambers of the body [to be remembered and mused upon].(B)

Lamentations 1-2

The Sorrows of Zion

[a]How solitary and lonely sits the city [Jerusalem]
That was [once] full of people!
How like a widow she has become.
She who was great among the nations!
The princess among the provinces,
Has become a forced laborer!

She weeps bitterly in the night
And her tears are [constantly] on her cheeks;
Among all her lovers (political allies)
She has no one to comfort her.
All her friends have dealt treacherously with her;
They have become her enemies.(A)

Judah has gone into exile under affliction
And under harsh servitude;
She dwells among the [pagan] nations,
But she has found no rest;
All her pursuers have overtaken her
In the midst of [her] distress.

The roads to Zion are in mourning
Because no one comes to the appointed feasts.
All her gates are desolate;
Her priests are groaning,
Her virgins are grieved and suffering,
And she suffers bitterly.

Her adversaries have become her masters,
Her enemies prosper;
For the Lord has caused her grief
Because of the multitude of her transgressions;
Her young children have gone
Into captivity before the enemy.(B)

All her beauty and majesty
Have departed from the Daughter of Zion (Jerusalem).
Her princes have become like deer
That have found no pasture;
They have fled without strength
Before the pursuer.

In the days of her affliction and homelessness
Jerusalem remembers all her precious things
That she had from the days of old,
When her people fell into the hand of the adversary,
And no one helped her,
The enemy saw her,
They mocked at her downfall.

Jerusalem sinned greatly;
Therefore she has become an unclean thing [and has been removed].
All who honored her [now] despise her
Because they have seen her nakedness;
Even she herself groans and turns [her face] away.

Her (ceremonial) uncleanness was on her skirts;
She did not [seriously] consider her future.
Therefore she has come down [from throne to slavery] in an astonishing manner;
She has no comforter.
“O Lord” [cries Jerusalem], “look at my affliction,
For the enemy has magnified himself [in triumph]!”
10
The adversary has spread out his hand
Over all her precious and desirable things;
For she has seen the [Gentile] nations enter her sanctuary (the Jerusalem temple)—
[b]The ones whom You commanded
That they should not enter into Your congregation [not even in the outer courts].(C)
11
All her people groan, seeking bread;
They have exchanged their desirable and precious things for food
To restore their lives.
“See, O Lord, and consider
How despised and repulsive I have become!”
12
“Is it nothing to you, all you who pass this way?
Look and see if there is any pain like my pain
Which was severely dealt out to me,
Which the Lord has inflicted [on me] on the day of His fierce anger.
13
“From on high He sent fire into my bones,
And it prevailed over them.
He has spread a net for my feet;
He has turned me back.
He has made me desolate and hopelessly miserable,
Faint all the day long.
14
“The yoke of my transgressions is bound;
By His hand they are knit and woven together.
They have come upon my neck.
He has made my strength fail;
The Lord has put me into the hand
Of those against whom I cannot stand.(D)
15
“The Lord has rejected all the strong men
In my midst;
He has proclaimed an established time against me
To crush my young men.
The Lord has trampled down as in a wine press
The Virgin Daughter of Judah.
16
“I weep for these things;
My eyes overflow with tears,
Because a comforter,
One who could restore my soul, is far away from me.
My children are desolate and perishing,
For the enemy has prevailed.”(E)
17
Zion stretches out her hands,
But there is no comforter for her.
The Lord has commanded concerning Jacob
That his neighbors should be his enemies;
Jerusalem has become a filthy thing [an object of contempt] among them.
18
“The Lord is righteous and just;
For I have rebelled against His commandment (His word).
Hear now, all you peoples,
And look at my pain;
My virgins and my young men
Have gone into captivity.
19
“I [Jerusalem] called to my lovers (political allies), but they deceived me.
My priests and my elders perished in the city
While they looked for food to restore their strength.
20
“See, O Lord, how distressed I am!
My spirit is deeply disturbed;
My heart is overturned within me and cannot rest,
For I have been very rebellious.
In the street the sword kills and bereaves;
In the house there is [famine, disease and] death!
21
“People have heard that I groan,
That I have no comforter [in You].
All my enemies have heard of my desperation;
They are delighted [O Lord] that You have done it.
Oh, that You would bring the day [of judgment] which You have proclaimed
So that they will become like me.(F)
22
“Let all their wickedness come before You;
And deal with them as You have dealt with me
Because of all my transgressions;
For my groans are many and my heart is faint.”

God’s Anger over Israel

How the Lord has covered the Daughter of Zion (Jerusalem)
With a cloud in His anger!
He has cast down from heaven to the earth
The glory and splendor of Israel
And has not remembered His footstool
In the day of His anger.

The Lord has swallowed up; He has not spared
All the country places of Jacob.
In His wrath He has thrown down
The strongholds of the Daughter of Judah (Jerusalem).
He has brought them down to the ground [in disgrace];
He has debased the kingdom and its princes.

In fierce anger He has cut off and destroyed
Every [c]horn of Israel.
He has withdrawn His right hand
From the presence of the enemy.
And He has burned in Jacob like a flaming fire
Consuming all around.

He has bent His bow like an enemy;
He has set His right hand like an adversary
And slain all that were delightful and pleasing to the eye;
In the tent of the Daughter of Zion
He has poured out His wrath like fire.

The Lord has become like an enemy;
He has swallowed up Israel.
He has swallowed up all its palaces;
He has destroyed its strongholds
And multiplied in the Daughter of Judah
Mourning and lamentation (expressions of grief).

And He has violently broken down His temple like a [fragile] garden hedge;
He has destroyed His appointed meeting place.
The Lord has caused the appointed feast and Sabbath
To be forgotten in Zion
And has despised and rejected the king and the priest
In the indignation of His anger.

The Lord has rejected His altar;
He has abandoned His sanctuary.
He has given into the hand of the enemy
The walls of her palaces;
They have made a noise in the house of the Lord
As on a day of an appointed feast.

The Lord determined to lay in ruins
The [city] wall of the Daughter of Zion.
He has stretched out a line,
He has not stopped His hand from destroying.
He has caused the rampart and the wall to lament (mourn in grief);
They have languished together.

Her gates have sunk into the ground;
He has destroyed and broken her bars.
Her king and her princes are [exiled] among the nations;
The law is no more.
Also, her prophets no longer find
Vision from the Lord.
10
The elders of the Daughter of Zion
Sit on the ground keeping silent;
They have thrown dust on their heads,
They have covered themselves with sackcloth.
The virgins of Jerusalem
Have bowed their heads to the ground.
11
My eyes fail because of tears [mourns Jeremiah],
My spirit is deeply disturbed;
My heart is poured out on the earth [in grief]
Because of the destruction of the daughter of my people [Jerusalem],
When little ones and infants faint
In the streets of the city.
12
They cry to their mothers,
“Where is grain and wine?”
As they faint like a wounded man
In the streets of the city,
As their life [slips away and] is poured out
In their mothers’ arms.
13
How shall I console you?
To what shall I compare you,
O Daughter of Jerusalem?
With what shall I compare you, so that I may comfort you,
O Virgin Daughter of Zion?
For your ruin is as vast as the sea;
Who can heal you?(G)
14
Your prophets have seen (imagined) for you
False and foolish visions;
And they have not exposed your wickedness
To restore you from captivity [by teaching you to repent],
But they have seen (imagined) and declared to you false and misleading oracles.
15
All who pass along the way
Clap their hands in derision at you;
They scoff and shake their heads
At the Daughter of Jerusalem, saying,
“Is this the city that was called
‘The perfection of beauty,
The joy of all the earth’?”
16
All your enemies
Have opened their mouths wide against you;
They [scornfully] hiss and gnash their teeth.
They say, “We have swallowed her up!
Certainly this is the day for which we waited;
We have reached it, we have seen it!”
17
The Lord has done what He planned;
He has accomplished His word
Which He commanded [d]from days of old.
He has demolished without sparing,
And He has caused the enemy to rejoice over you;
He has exalted the power of your enemies.(H)
18
Their hearts cried out to the Lord.
“O wall of the Daughter of Zion,
Let your tears run down like a river day and night;
Give yourself no relief,
Let your eyes have no rest.
19
“Arise, cry aloud in the night,
At the beginning of the night watches;
Pour out your heart like water
Before the presence of the Lord;
Lift up your hands to Him
For the life of your little ones
Who are faint from hunger
At the head of every street.”(I)
20
See, O Lord, and look!
With whom have You dealt this way?
Should women eat their offspring,
The little ones who were born healthy and beautiful?
Should priest and prophet be killed
In the sanctuary of the Lord?
21
The young and the old
Lie on the ground in the streets;
My virgins and my young men
Have fallen by the sword.
You have killed them in the day of Your anger,
You have slaughtered, not sparing.
22
You [Lord] called as in the day of an appointed feast
My terrors (dangers) on every side;
And there was no one who escaped or survived
In the day of the Lord’s anger.
Those I have cared for and brought up with tenderness,
My enemy annihilated them.

Footnotes:

  1. Lamentations 1:1 The writings of the prophets are not only valuable contributions to Old Testament history, but the reader is also enriched by familiarity with the forecasts of events which have been fulfilled, thus revealing the divine inspiration of the books and the wisdom and power of the God who prompted their writings.
  2. Lamentations 1:10 The Ammonites and Moabites, descendants of Lot and related to Israel, were forbidden to enter the congregation of the Lord, “even to their tenth generation,” because they refused to assist the sons of Israel when they were escaping from Egypt, and because they hired Balaam to curse Israel (Deut 23:3, 4). The Israelites never assembled any closer to the sanctuary of the temple than in the court outside its door. No Jew, not even David was authorized to enter the sanctuary proper except for certain Levites to whom such service was assigned. But now, Jeremiah says, the forbidden pagan nations enter the Holy of Holies to vandalize.
  3. Lamentations 2:3 The horn is symbolic of strength and power.
  4. Lamentations 2:17 The Jews were well aware of the ancient predictions of the coming judgment against Israel because of their sin.

Philemon

Salutation

Paul, a prisoner [for the sake] of Christ Jesus (the Messiah, the Anointed), and our brother Timothy,

To Philemon our dearly beloved friend and fellow worker, and to [your wife] Apphia our sister, and to [a]Archippus our fellow soldier [in ministry], and to the [b]church that meets in your [c]house: Grace to you and peace [inner calm and spiritual well-being] from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Philemon’s Love and Faith

I thank my God always, making mention of you in my prayers, because I hear of your love and of your faith which you have toward the Lord Jesus and toward all the [d]saints (God’s people). I pray that the sharing of your faith may become effective and powerful because of your accurate knowledge of every good thing which is ours in Christ. For I have had great joy and comfort and encouragement from your love, because the hearts of the saints (God’s people) have been refreshed through you, my brother.

Therefore [on the basis of these facts], though I have enough confidence in Christ to order you to do what is appropriate, yet for love’s sake I prefer to appeal to you—since I am such a person as Paul, an old man, and now also a prisoner [for the sake] of Christ Jesus—

A Plea for Onesimus to be Freed

10 I appeal to you for my [own spiritual] child Onesimus, whom I have fathered [in the faith] while a captive in these chains. 11 Once he was useless to you, but now he is indeed [e]useful to you as well as to me. 12 I have sent him back to you in person, that is, like sending my very heart. 13 I would have chosen to keep him with me, so that he might minister to me on your behalf during my imprisonment for the gospel; 14 but I did not want to do anything without first getting your consent, so that your goodness would not be, in effect, by compulsion but of your own free will. 15 Perhaps it was for this reason that he was separated from you for a while, so that you would have him back forever, 16 no longer as a slave, but [as someone] more than a slave, as a brother [in Christ], especially dear to me, but how much more to you, both in the flesh [as a servant] and in the Lord [as a fellow believer].(A)

17 So if you consider me a partner, welcome and accept him as you would me. 18 But if he has wronged you in any way or owes you anything, charge that to my account; 19 I, Paul, write this with my [f]own hand, I will repay it in full (not to mention to you that you [g]owe to me even your own self as well). 20 Yes, brother, let me have some benefit and joy from you in the Lord; refresh my heart in Christ.

21 I write to you [perfectly] confident of your obedient compliance, [h]since I know that you will do even more than I ask.

22 At the same time also prepare a guest room for me [in expectation of a visit], for I hope that through your prayers I will be [granted the gracious privilege of] coming to you [at Colossae].

23 Greetings to you from Epaphras, my fellow prisoner here in [the cause of] Christ Jesus, 24 and from Mark, Aristarchus, Demas, and Luke, my fellow workers.

25 The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit.

Footnotes:

  1. Philemon 1:2 Perhaps the son of Philemon and Apphia.
  2. Philemon 1:2 Philemon was responsible to see that this letter was shared with his fellow Colossian believers.
  3. Philemon 1:2 Prior to the third century a.d. churches customarily met in private homes.
  4. Philemon 1:5 All born-again believers (saints) have been reborn from above—spiritually transformed, renewed, made holy and set apart for God’s purpose.
  5. Philemon 1:11 Paul makes a play on words here because Onesimus means “useful” or “profitable.”
  6. Philemon 1:19 By writing this with his own hand, Paul accepted legal liability.
  7. Philemon 1:19 Philemon evidently was saved through Paul’s ministry and therefore owed Paul a debt that could not be repaid.
  8. Philemon 1:21 This was probably a subtle suggestion by Paul to emancipate Onesimus.

Psalm 101

The Psalmist’s Profession of Uprightness.

A Psalm of David.

101 I will sing of [steadfast] lovingkindness and justice;
To You, O Lord, I will sing praises.

I will behave wisely and follow the way of integrity.
When will You come to me?
I will walk in my house in integrity and with a blameless heart.

I will set no worthless or wicked thing before my eyes.
I hate the practice of those who fall away [from the right path];
It will not grasp hold of me.

A perverse heart shall depart from me;
I will not tolerate evil.

Whoever secretly slanders his neighbor, him I will silence;
The one who has a haughty look and a proud (arrogant) heart I will not tolerate.

My eyes will be on the faithful (honorable) of the land, that they may dwell with me;
He who walks blamelessly is the one who will minister to and serve me.

He who practices deceit will not dwell in my house;
He who tells lies and half-truths will not continue [to remain] in my presence.

Morning after morning I will destroy all the wicked in the land,
That I may cut off from the city of the Lord all those who do evil.

Jeremiah 51:54-52:34

54
The sound of an outcry [comes] from Babylon,
And [the sound] of great destruction from the land of the Chaldeans!
55
For the Lord is going to destroy Babylon and make her a ruin,
And He will still her great voice [that hums with city life].
And the waves [of her conquerors] roar like great waters,
The noise of their voices is raised up [like the marching of an army].
56
For the destroyer is coming against her, against Babylon;
And her mighty warriors will be captured,
Their bows are shattered;
For the Lord is a God of [just] restitution;
He will fully repay.
57
“I will make her princes and her wise men drunk,
Her governors and her commanders and her mighty warriors;
They will sleep a perpetual sleep and not wake up,”
Says the King—the Lord of hosts is His name.

58 Thus says the Lord of hosts,

“The [a]broad wall of Babylon will be completely overthrown and the foundations razed
And her high gates will be set on fire;
The peoples will labor in vain,
And the nations become exhausted [only] for fire [that will destroy their work].”(A)

59 The message which Jeremiah the prophet commanded Seraiah the son of Neriah, the grandson of Mahseiah, when he went with Zedekiah the king of Judah to Babylon in the fourth year of his reign. Now this Seraiah was chief chamberlain or quartermaster [and brother of Baruch]. 60 So Jeremiah wrote in a single scroll all the disaster which would come on Babylon, [that is] all these words which have been written concerning Babylon. 61 Then Jeremiah said to Seraiah, “When you come to Babylon, see to it that you read all these words aloud, 62 and say, ‘You, O Lord, have promised concerning this place to cut it off and destroy it, so that there shall be nothing living in it, neither man nor animal, but it will be perpetually desolate.’ 63 And as soon as you finish reading this scroll, you shall tie a stone to it and throw it into the middle of the Euphrates. 64 Then say, ‘In the same way Babylon will sink down and not rise because of the disaster that I will bring on her; and the Babylonians will become [hopelessly] exhausted.’” Thus the words of Jeremiah are completed.(B)

The Fall of Jerusalem

52 Zedekiah was twenty-one years old when he became king, and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem; and his mother’s name was Hamutal the daughter of [b]Jeremiah of Libnah.(C) He did that which was evil in the sight of the Lord like all that Jehoiakim had done. For all this came about in Jerusalem and Judah because of the anger of the Lord, and [in the end] He cast them from His presence. And Zedekiah rebelled against the king of Babylon. Now it came about in the ninth year of his reign, in the tenth month, on the tenth day, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came, he and all his army, against Jerusalem; and they camped against it and built moveable towers and siege mounds all around it.(D) So the city was besieged until the eleventh year of King Zedekiah.(E) In the fourth month, on the ninth day of the month, the famine was so severe in the city that there was no food for the people of the land. Then the city was broken into, and all the soldiers fled. They left the city at night [as Ezekiel prophesied] passing through the gate between the two walls by the king’s garden, though the Chaldeans were all around the city. They fled by way of the Arabah (the Jordan Valley).(F) But the army of the Chaldeans pursued the king and overtook Zedekiah in the plains of Jericho; and his entire army was scattered from him. Then they seized the king and brought him to the king of Babylon at Riblah in the [Syrian] land of Hamath [on the northern border of Israel], where he pronounced sentence on him. 10 The king of Babylon killed the sons of Zedekiah before his eyes; he also killed all the princes of Judah at Riblah. 11 Then the king of Babylon blinded Zedekiah, bound him with bronze shackles and took him to Babylon and there he put him in prison [c][in a mill] until the day of his death.(G)

12 Now in the fifth month, on the tenth day, which was the nineteenth year of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, Nebuzaradan captain of the guard, who served the king of Babylon, came to Jerusalem. 13 He burned down the house of the Lord and the king’s palace and all the houses of Jerusalem; every great house or important structure he set on fire. 14 So all the army of the Chaldeans who were with the captain of the guard broke down all the walls around Jerusalem. 15 Then Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard took away into exile some of the poorest of the people, those who were left in the city [at the time it was captured], along with those who deserted to join the king of Babylon [during the siege] and the rest of the artisans. 16 But Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard left some of the poorest of the land to be vinedressers and farmers.

17 Now the Chaldeans broke into pieces the pillars of bronze which belonged to the house of the Lord, and the bronze pedestals [which supported the ten basins] and the [enormous] bronze Sea, which were in the house of the Lord, and carried all the bronze to Babylon. 18 They also took away the pots [for carrying away ashes] and the shovels and the snuffers and the bowls and the spoons and all the bronze articles used in the temple service. 19 The captain of the guard also took away the [small] bowls and the firepans and the basins and the pots and the lampstands and the incense cups and the bowls for the drink offerings—whatever was made of fine gold and whatever was made of fine silver. 20 The two pillars, the one [enormous] Sea (basin), and [d]the twelve bronze bulls under the Sea, and the stands, which King Solomon had made for the house of the Lord—the bronze of all these things was beyond weighing. 21 Concerning the pillars, the height of each pillar was eighteen cubits (twenty-seven feet), and a line [an ornamental molding] of twelve cubits (eighteen feet) went around its circumference; it was four fingers thick, and [the pillar was] hollow. 22 A capital of bronze was on [top of] it. The height of each capital was five cubits (seven and one-half feet), with a lattice-work and pomegranates around it, all of bronze. The second pillar also, with its pomegranates, was similar to these. 23 There were ninety-six pomegranates on the sides; and a hundred pomegranates were on the lattice-work all around.

24 Then the captain of the guard took [as prisoners] Seraiah the chief priest and Zephaniah the second priest and the three doorkeepers. 25 He also took out of the city one official who was overseer of the soldiers, and seven of the king’s advisers who were found in the city, and the scribe of the commander of the army who mustered the people of the land, and sixty men who were still in the city. 26 Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard took them and brought them to the king of Babylon at Riblah. 27 Then the king of Babylon struck them down and put them to death at Riblah in the land of Hamath. So Judah was led away into exile from its own land.

28 This is the number of people whom Nebuchadnezzar took captive and exiled: in the seventh year, 3,023 Jews; 29 in the eighteenth year of Nebuchadnezzar, [he took captive] 832 persons from Jerusalem; 30 in the twenty-third year of Nebuchadnezzar, Nebuzaradan the captain of the [Babylonian] guard took captive 745 Jewish people; there were 4,600 persons in all.

31 Now it came about in the thirty-seventh year of the exile of Jehoiachin [also called Coniah and Jeconiah] king of Judah, in the twelfth month, on the twenty-fifth of the month, Evil-merodach king of Babylon, in the first year of his reign, [e]showed favor to Jehoiachin king of Judah and brought him out of prison.(H) 32 He spoke kindly to him and gave him a throne above the thrones of the kings who were [captives] with him in Babylon. 33 Jehoiachin changed his prison clothes, and he dined regularly at the king’s table all the days of his life. 34 And his allowance, a regular allowance was given to him by the king of Babylon, a daily portion [according to his needs] until the day of his death, [f]all the days of his life.

Footnotes:

  1. Jeremiah 51:58 Babylon was surrounded by a moat and two separate walls approximately fifty feet high. Both walls consisted of two layers. The outer layer of the outer wall was twenty-five feet thick, and the inner layer twenty-three feet thick. The outer layer of the inner defensive wall was twenty-one feet thick, and the inner layer twelve feet thick. These walls were so massive that archeologists estimate that 180 million bricks were required for their construction. Babylon’s immense ruins may still be seen—an amazing, enduring testimony to the power of God.
  2. Jeremiah 52:1 A different man from the prophet and author of this book.
  3. Jeremiah 52:11 The Septuagint (Greek translation of the Old Testament) translates this word “mill.” This may imply that the Chaldeans treated Zedekiah in his old age to the same fate Samson suffered when he was a Philistine captive (Judg 16:21).
  4. Jeremiah 52:20 King Ahaz had previously removed the twelve bronze bulls (1 Kin 7:25) from under the big basin and had replaced them with a substructure of stone (2 Kin 16:17), but unfortunately he had not put them beyond the reach of the Chaldeans.
  5. Jeremiah 52:31 Lit lifted up the head of.
  6. Jeremiah 52:34 The purpose of these last few words may be to avoid ending the book with the word “death.” The general purpose of the last four verses seems to have been to leave the reader with the comforting thought that even in exile the Lord remembered His people and softened the heart of the conqueror toward David’s descendant. Note also the contrast between Zedekiah, who remained in prison until his death (v 11), and Jehoiachin, who was set free and treated with honor until his death.

Titus 3

Godly Living

Remind people to be subject to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready and willing to do good, to slander or abuse no one, to be kind and conciliatory and gentle, showing unqualified consideration and courtesy toward everyone. For we too once were foolish, disobedient, deceived, enslaved to various sinful desires and pleasures, spending and wasting our life in malice and envy, hateful, hating one another. But when the goodness and kindness of God our Savior and His love for mankind appeared [in human form as the Man, Jesus Christ], He saved us, not because of any works of righteousness that we have done, but because of His own compassion and mercy, by the cleansing of the new birth (spiritual transformation, regeneration) and renewing by the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out richly upon us through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that we would be justified [made free of the guilt of sin] by His [compassionate, undeserved] grace, and that we would be [acknowledged as acceptable to Him and] made heirs of eternal life [actually experiencing it] according to our hope (His guarantee). This is a faithful and trustworthy saying; and concerning these things I want you to speak with great confidence, so that those who have believed God [that is, those who have trusted in, relied on, and accepted Christ Jesus as Savior,] will be careful to participate in doing good and honorable things. These things are excellent [in themselves] and profitable for the people. But avoid foolish and ill-informed and stupid controversies and genealogies and dissensions and quarrels about the Law, for they are unprofitable and useless. 10 After a first and second warning reject a divisive man [who promotes heresy and causes dissension—ban him from your fellowship and have nothing more to do with him], 11 well aware that such a person is twisted and is sinning; he is convicted and self-condemned [and is gratified by causing confusion among believers].

Personal Concerns

12 When I send Artemas or [perhaps] Tychicus to you, make every effort to come to me at Nicopolis, for I have decided to spend the winter there. 13 Do your best to help Zenas the lawyer and Apollos on their way; see that they are supplied and lack nothing. 14 Our people must learn to do good deeds to meet necessary demands [whatever the occasion may require], so that they will not be unproductive.

15 All who are with me greet you. Greet those who love us in the faith.

Grace be with all of you.

Psalm 100

All Men Exhorted to Praise God.

A Psalm of Thanksgiving.

100 Shout joyfully to the Lord, all the earth.

Serve the Lord with gladness and delight;
Come before His presence with joyful singing.

Know and fully recognize with gratitude that the Lord Himself is God;
It is He who has made us, [a]not we ourselves [and we are His].
We are His people and the sheep of His pasture.(A)

Enter His gates with a song of thanksgiving
And His courts with praise.
Be thankful to Him, bless and praise His name.

For the Lord is good;
His mercy and lovingkindness are everlasting,
His faithfulness [endures] to all generations.

Jeremiah 51:1-53

Babylon Judged for Sins against Israel

51 Thus says the Lord:

“Behold, I am going to stir up and put into action [a fury] against Babylon
And against the [rebellious] people of Leb-kamai (Chaldea)
A destroying wind and hostile spirit;

“And I will send foreigners to Babylon that they may winnow her
And may devastate and empty her land;
For in the day of destruction
They will be against her on every side.

“Do not let him (the Chaldean defender) who bends his bow bend it,
Nor let him rise up in his coat of armor.
So do not spare her young men;
Devote her entire army to destruction.

“They shall fall down dead in the land of the Chaldeans,
And wounded in her streets.”

For neither Israel nor Judah has been [a]abandoned
By his God, the Lord of hosts,
Though their land is full of sin and guilt
Before the Holy One of Israel.

Flee out of Babylon,
Let every one of you save his life!
Do not be destroyed in her punishment,
For this is the time of the Lord’s vengeance;
He is going to pay her what she has earned.(A)

Babylon has been a golden cup in the Lord’s hand,
Intoxicating all the earth.
The nations drank her wine;
Therefore the nations have gone mad.(B)

Babylon has suddenly fallen and is shattered!
Wail for her [if you care to]!
Get balm for her [incurable] pain;
Perhaps she may be healed.(C)

We would have healed Babylon, but she was not to be healed.
Abandon her and let each [captive] return to his own country,
For her guilt and judgment have reached to heaven
And are lifted up to the very skies.(D)
10
The Lord has brought about our vindication and has revealed the righteousness of our cause;
Come and let us proclaim in Zion
The work of the Lord our God!

11
Sharpen the arrows, take up the shields [and cover yourselves]!
The Lord has stirred up the spirit of the kings of the [b]Medes,
Because His purpose concerning Babylon is to destroy it;
For that is the vengeance of the Lord, vengeance [on Babylon] for [plundering and destroying] His temple.
12
Set up a signal on the walls of Babylon [to spread the news];
Post a strong blockade,
Station the guards,
Prepare the men for ambush!
For the Lord has both purposed and done
That which He spoke against the people of Babylon.
13
[O Babylon] you who live by many waters,
Rich in treasures,
Your end has come,
And the line measuring your life is cut.(E)
14
The Lord of hosts has sworn [an oath] by Himself, saying,
“Surely I will fill you with men, as with [a swarm of] locusts [who strip the land clean],
And they will lift up a song and shout of victory over you.”

15
He made the earth by His power;
He established the world by His wisdom
And stretched out the heavens by His understanding.
16
When He utters His voice, there is a tumult of waters in the heavens,
And He causes the clouds to ascend from the ends of the earth.
He makes lightnings for the rain
And brings out the wind from His storehouses.
17
Every man has become stupid and brutelike, without knowledge [of God];
Every goldsmith is shamed by the cast images he has made;
For his molten idols are a lie,
And there is no breath [of life] or spirit in them.
18
They are worthless (empty, false, futile), a work of delusion and worthy of derision;
In the time of their inspection and punishment they will perish.
19
The Portion of Jacob [the true God of Israel] is not like these [handmade gods];
For He is the Maker of all and the One who formed and fashioned all things,
And Israel is the tribe of His inheritance—
The Lord of hosts is His name.(F)
20
“You [Cyrus of Persia, soon to conquer Babylon] are My battle-axe and weapon of war—
For with you I shatter nations,
With you I destroy kingdoms.
21
“With you I shatter the horse and his rider,
With you I shatter the chariot and its driver,
22
With you I shatter man and woman,
With you I shatter old man and youth,
With you I shatter young man and virgin,
23
With you I shatter the shepherd and his flock,
With you I shatter the farmer and his yoke of oxen,
And with you I shatter governors and commanders.

24 “And I will [completely] repay Babylon and all the people of Chaldea for all the evil that they have done in Zion—before your very eyes [I will do it],” says the Lord.

25
“Behold, I am against you,
O destroying mountain [conqueror of nations],
Who destroys the whole earth,” declares the Lord,
“I will stretch out My hand against you,
And roll you down from the [rugged] cliffs,
And will make you a burnt mountain (extinct volcano).
26
“They will not take from you [even] a stone for a cornerstone
Nor any rock for a foundation,
But you will be [c]desolate forever,” says the Lord.

27
Lift up a signal in the land [to spread the news]!
Blow the trumpet among the nations!
Dedicate the nations [for war] against her;
Call against her the kingdoms of Ararat, Minni, and Ashkenaz.
Appoint a marshal against her;
Cause the horses to come up like bristly locusts [with their wings not yet released from their cases].
28
Prepare and dedicate the nations for war against her—
The kings of Media,
With their governors and commanders,
And every land of their dominion.
29
The land trembles and writhes [in pain and sorrow],
For the purposes of the Lord against Babylon stand,
To make the land of Babylon
A desolation without inhabitants.
30
The mighty warriors of Babylon have ceased to fight;
They remain in their strongholds.
Their strength and power have failed;
They are becoming [weak and helpless] like women.
Their dwelling places are set on fire;
The [d]bars on her gates are broken.
31
One courier runs to meet another,
And one messenger to meet another,
To tell the [e]king of Babylon
That his city has been captured from end to end;
32
And that the fords [across the Euphrates] have been blocked and [the ferries] seized,
And they have set the [great] marshes on fire,
And the men of war are terrified.

33 For thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel:

“The Daughter of Babylon is like a [f]threshing floor
At the time it is being trampled and prepared;
Yet in a little while the time of harvest will come for her.”

34
“Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon has devoured [g]me, he has crushed me,
He has set me down like an empty vessel.
Like a monster he has swallowed me up,
He has filled his belly with my delicacies;
He has spit me out and washed me away.
35
“May the violence done to me and to my flesh and blood be upon Babylon,”
The inhabitant of Zion will say;
And, “May my blood be upon the inhabitants of Chaldea,”
Jerusalem will say.

36 Therefore thus says the Lord,

“Behold, I will plead your case
And take full vengeance for you;
I will dry up her sea and great reservoir
And make her fountain dry.
37
“Babylon will become a heap [of ruins], a haunt and dwelling place of jackals,
An object of horror (an astonishing desolation) and a hissing [of scorn and amazement], without inhabitants.
38
“They (the Chaldean lords) will be roaring together [before their sudden capture] like young lions [roaring over their prey],
They (the princes) will be growling like lions’ cubs.
39
“When they are [h]inflamed [with wine and lust during their drinking bouts], I will prepare them a feast [of My wrath]
And make them drunk, that they may rejoice
And may sleep a perpetual sleep
And not wake up,” declares the Lord.
40
“I will bring them down like lambs to the slaughter,
Like rams together with male goats.

41
“How Sheshak (Babylon) has been captured,
And the praise of the whole earth been seized!
How Babylon has become an astonishing desolation and an object of horror among the nations!
42
“The sea has come up over Babylon;
She has been engulfed with its tumultuous waves.
43
“Her cities have become an astonishing desolation and an object of horror,
A parched land and a desert,
A land in which no one lives,
And through which no son of man passes.
44
“I will punish and judge Bel [the handmade god] in Babylon
And take out of his mouth what he has swallowed up [the stolen sacred articles and the captives of Judah and elsewhere].
The nations will no longer flow to him.
Yes, the wall of Babylon has fallen down!

45
“Come out of her midst, My people,
And each of you [escape and] save yourself
From the fierce anger of the Lord.(G)
46
“Now beware so that you do not lose heart,
And so that you are not afraid at the rumor that will be heard in the land—
For the rumor shall come one year,
And after that another rumor in another year,
And violence shall be in the land,
Ruler against ruler—
47
“Therefore behold (listen carefully), the days are coming
When I will judge and punish the idols of Babylon;
Her whole land will be perplexed and shamed,
And all her slain will fall in her midst.
48
“Then heaven and earth and all that is in them
Will shout and sing for joy over Babylon,
For the [i]destroyers will come against her from the north,”
Says the Lord.(H)

49
Indeed Babylon is to fall for the slain of Israel,
As also for Babylon the slain of all the earth have fallen.
50
You who have escaped the sword,
Go away! Do not stay!
Remember the Lord from far away,
And let [desolate] Jerusalem come into your mind.
51
We are perplexed and ashamed, for we have heard reproach;
Disgrace has covered our faces,
For foreigners [from Babylon] have come
Into the [most] sacred parts of the sanctuary of the Lord [even those places forbidden to all but the appointed priest].

52
“Therefore behold, the days are coming,” says the Lord,
“When I will judge and punish the idols [of Babylon],
And throughout her land the mortally wounded will groan.”
53
“Though Babylon should ascend to the heavens,
And though she should fortify her lofty stronghold,
Yet destroyers will come on her from Me,” says the Lord.

  1. Jeremiah 51:5 Lit widowed.
  2. Jeremiah 51:11 Perhaps a reference to the conquest of Babylon by the Medes and the Persians in 539 b.c.
  3. Jeremiah 51:26 See note Is 13:22 for this prophecy’s fulfillment.
  4. Jeremiah 51:30 Babylon fell in 539 b.c. on the night King Belshazzar was assassinated (Dan 5:30).
  5. Jeremiah 51:31 In 553 b.c. Belshazzar was named co-ruler of Babylon by his father, King Nabonidus, and reigned in that capacity until Babylon was conquered. In spite of this co-regency, Nabonidus is regarded historically as the last of the Babylonian kings. Belshazzar’s mother, Nitrocris, was the daughter of King Nebuchadnezzar.
  6. Jeremiah 51:33 At harvest time the threshing floor had to be firmly trampled before the grain or seeds could be extracted with the flail. A flail consisted of a handle to which was attached a freely swinging stick or bar. In the Bible, the harvest is often used as metaphor for judgment.
  7. Jeremiah 51:34 The Jewish captives.
  8. Jeremiah 51:39 Through the voice of Jeremiah God revealed the ultimate destiny of great Babylon, whom Herodotus praised as “embellished with ornaments more than any city.” The fact that all of the details of the prophecy were fulfilled is recorded by Daniel (5:1-30), and becomes even more amazing after twenty-six centuries. Only a “fool” could say in his heart, “There is no God” (Ps 14:1).
  9. Jeremiah 51:48 I.e. the Medo-Persian Empire.

Titus 2

Duties of the Older and Younger

But as for you, teach the things which are in agreement with sound doctrine [which produces men and women of good character whose lifestyle identifies them as true Christians]. Older men are to be temperate, dignified, sensible, sound in faith, in love, in steadfastness [Christlike in character].

Older women similarly are to be reverent in their behavior, not malicious gossips nor addicted to much wine, teaching what is right and good, so that they may encourage the young women to tenderly love their husbands and their children, to be sensible, pure, makers of a home [where God is honored], good-natured, being subject to their own husbands, so that the word of God will not be dishonored.

In a similar way urge the young men to be sensible and self-controlled and to behave wisely [taking life seriously]. And in all things show yourself to be an example of good works, with purity in doctrine [having the strictest regard for integrity and truth], dignified, sound and beyond reproach in instruction, so that the opponent [of the faith] will be shamed, having nothing bad to say about us.

Urge bond-servants to be subject to their own masters in everything, to be pleasing and not talk back, 10 not stealing [things, regardless of value], but proving themselves trustworthy, so that in every respect they will adorn and do credit to the teaching of God our Savior.

11 For the [remarkable, undeserved] grace of God that [a]brings salvation has appeared to all men. 12 It teaches us to reject ungodliness and worldly (immoral) desires, and to live sensible, upright, and godly lives [lives with a purpose that reflect spiritual maturity] in this present age, 13 awaiting and confidently expecting the [fulfillment of our] blessed hope and the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior, Christ Jesus, 14 who [willingly] gave Himself [to be crucified] on our behalf to redeem us and purchase our freedom from all wickedness, and to purify for Himself a chosen and very special people to be His own possession, who are enthusiastic for doing what is good.(A)

15 Tell them these things. Encourage and rebuke with full authority. Let no one disregard or despise you [conduct yourself and your teaching so as to command respect].

Psalm 99

Praise to the Lord for His Fidelity to Israel.

99 The Lord reigns, let the peoples tremble [with submissive wonder]!
He sits enthroned above the cherubim, let the earth shake!

The Lord is great in Zion,
And He is exalted and magnified above all the peoples.

Let them [reverently] praise Your great and awesome name;
Holy is He.(A)

The strength of the King loves justice and righteous judgment;
You have established fairness;
You have executed justice and righteousness in Jacob (Israel).

Exalt the Lord our God
And worship at His footstool;
Holy is He.

Moses and Aaron were among His priests,
And Samuel was among those who called on His name;
They called upon the Lord and He answered them.

He spoke to them in the pillar of cloud;
They kept His testimonies
And the statutes that He gave them.(B)

You answered them, O Lord our God;
You were a forgiving God to them,
And yet an avenger of their evil practices.

Exalt the Lord our God
And worship at His holy hill [Zion, the temple mount],
For the Lord our God is holy.

Jeremiah 49:23-50:46

Judgment on Damascus

23 Concerning (A)Damascus:

(B)“Hamath and (C)Arpad are confounded,
for they have heard bad news;
they melt in fear,
(D)they are troubled like the sea that cannot be quiet.
24 (E)Damascus has become feeble, (F)she turned to flee,
and panic seized her;
anguish and sorrows have taken hold of her,
as (G)of a woman in labor.
25 How is (H)the famous city not forsaken,
the city of my joy?
26 (I)Therefore her young men shall fall in her squares,
and all her soldiers shall be destroyed in that day,
declares the Lord of hosts.
27 And (J)I will kindle a fire in the wall of (K)Damascus,
and it shall devour the strongholds of (L)Ben-hadad.”

Judgment on Kedar and Hazor

28 Concerning (M)Kedar and the kingdoms of Hazor that Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon struck down.

Thus says the Lord:
(N)“Rise up, advance against (O)Kedar!
Destroy (P)the people of the east!
29 (Q)Their tents and their flocks shall be taken,
their (R)curtains and all their goods;
their camels shall be led away from them,
and men shall cry to them: (S)‘Terror on every side!’
30 (T)Flee, wander far away, dwell in the depths,
O inhabitants of Hazor!
declares the Lord.
For Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon
has made a plan against you
and formed a purpose against you.

31 (U)“Rise up, advance against a nation (V)at ease,
(W)that dwells securely,
declares the Lord,
(X)that has no gates or bars,
that dwells alone.
32 (Y)Their camels shall become plunder,
their herds of livestock a spoil.
(Z)I will scatter to every wind
(AA)those who cut the corners of their hair,
and I will bring their calamity
from every side of them,
declares the Lord.
33 Hazor shall become (AB)a haunt of jackals,
an everlasting waste;
(AC)no man shall dwell there;
(AD)no man shall sojourn in her.”

Judgment on Elam

34 The word of the Lord that came to Jeremiah the prophet concerning (AE)Elam, in the beginning of the reign of (AF)Zedekiah king of Judah.

35 Thus says the Lord of hosts: “Behold, I will break (AG)the bow of (AH)Elam, the mainstay of their might. 36 And I will bring upon (AI)Elam the four winds from the four quarters of heaven. And I will scatter them to all those winds, and there shall be no nation to which those driven out of (AJ)Elam shall not come. 37 I will (AK)terrify (AL)Elam before their enemies and before those who seek their life. I will bring disaster upon them, (AM)my fierce anger, declares the Lord. (AN)I will send the sword after them, until I have consumed them, 38 and I will set my throne in (AO)Elam and destroy their king and officials, declares the Lord.

39 “But in the latter days (AP)I will restore the fortunes of (AQ)Elam, declares the Lord.”

Judgment on Babylon

50 The word that the Lord spoke concerning (AR)Babylon, concerning the land of the Chaldeans, (AS)by Jeremiah the prophet:

“Declare among the nations and proclaim,
set up a banner and proclaim,
conceal it not, and say:
(AT)‘Babylon is taken,
(AU)Bel is put to shame,
Merodach is dismayed.
(AV)Her images are put to shame,
her idols are dismayed.’

“For (AW)out of the north a nation has come up against her, (AX)which shall make her land a desolation, and none shall dwell in it; (AY)both man and beast shall flee away.

(AZ)“In those days and in that time, declares the Lord, (BA)the people of Israel and the people of Judah shall come together, (BB)weeping as they come, and they (BC)shall seek the Lord their God. (BD)They shall ask the way to Zion, with faces turned toward it, (BE)saying, ‘Come, let us join ourselves to the Lord in an (BF)everlasting covenant that will never be forgotten.’

(BG)“My people have been lost sheep. (BH)Their shepherds have led them astray, turning them away on the mountains. From mountain to hill they have gone. They have forgotten their fold. All who found them have devoured them, (BI)and their enemies have said, ‘We are not guilty, for (BJ)they have sinned against the Lord, (BK)their habitation of righteousness, the Lord, (BL)the hope of their fathers.’

(BM)“Flee from the midst of Babylon, (BN)and go out of the land of the Chaldeans, and be as male goats before the flock. For behold, I am stirring up and bringing against Babylon (BO)a gathering of great nations, from the north country. And they shall array themselves against her. From there she shall be taken. Their arrows are like a skilled warrior who does not return empty-handed. 10 (BP)Chaldea shall be plundered; all who plunder her shall be sated, declares the Lord.

11 (BQ)“Though you rejoice, though you exult,
O plunderers of my heritage,
though you frolic like a heifer in the pasture,
and neigh like stallions,
12 your mother shall be utterly shamed,
and she who bore you shall be disgraced.
Behold, she shall be the last of the nations,
(BR)a wilderness, a dry land, and a desert.
13 (BS)Because of the wrath of the Lord she shall not be inhabited
but shall be an utter desolation;
(BT)everyone who passes by Babylon shall be appalled,
(BU)and hiss because of all her wounds.
14 (BV)Set yourselves in array against Babylon all around,
(BW)all you who bend the bow;
shoot at her, spare no arrows,
(BX)for she has sinned against the Lord.
15 (BY)Raise a shout against her all around;
she has surrendered;
her bulwarks have fallen;
(BZ)her walls are thrown down.
For (CA)this is the vengeance of the Lord:
take vengeance on her;
(CB)do to her as she has done.
16 Cut off from Babylon the sower,
and the one who handles the sickle in time of harvest;
(CC)because of the sword of the oppressor,
(CD)every one shall turn to his own people,
and every one shall flee to his own land.

17 (CE)“Israel is a hunted sheep (CF)driven away by lions. (CG)First the king of Assyria (CH)devoured him, and now at last (CI)Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon (CJ)has gnawed his bones. 18 Therefore, thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Behold, (CK)I am bringing punishment on the king of Babylon and his land, (CL)as I punished the king of Assyria. 19 (CM)I will restore Israel to his pasture, and (CN)he shall feed on (CO)Carmel and in (CP)Bashan, and his desire shall be satisfied on the hills of Ephraim and in (CQ)Gilead. 20 In those days and in that time, declares the Lord, (CR)iniquity shall be sought in Israel, and there shall be none, and sin in Judah, and none shall be found, for (CS)I will pardon those whom I leave as a remnant.

21 “Go up against the land of Merathaim,[a]
and against the inhabitants of Pekod.[b]
Kill, (CT)and devote them to destruction,[c]
declares the Lord,
and do all that I have commanded you.
22 (CU)The noise of battle is in the land,
and great destruction!
23 (CV)How the hammer of the whole earth
is cut down and broken!
(CW)How Babylon (CX)has become
a horror among the nations!
24 (CY)I set a snare for you and you were taken, O Babylon,
and (CZ)you did not know it;
you were found and caught,
because you opposed the Lord.
25 The Lord has opened his armory
and brought out (DA)the weapons of his wrath,
for the Lord God of hosts has a work to do
in the land of the Chaldeans.
26 Come against her from every quarter;
open her granaries;
(DB)pile her up like heaps of grain, and devote her to destruction;
let nothing be left of her.
27 Kill all (DC)her bulls;
let them go down to the slaughter.
Woe to them, for their day has come,
(DD)the time of their punishment.

28 “A voice! They (DE)flee and escape from the land of Babylon, (DF)to declare in Zion the vengeance of the Lord our God, vengeance for (DG)his temple.

29 (DH)“Summon archers against Babylon, all those who bend the bow. (DI)Encamp around her; let no one escape. (DJ)Repay her according to her deeds; do to her according to all that she has done. For she has (DK)proudly defied the Lord, the Holy One of Israel. 30 (DL)Therefore her young men shall fall in her squares, and all her soldiers shall be destroyed on that day, declares the Lord.

31 “Behold, I am against you, O (DM)proud one,
declares the Lord God of hosts,
(DN)for your day has come,
the time when I will punish you.
32 (DO)The proud one shall stumble and fall,
with none to raise him up,
(DP)and I will kindle a fire in his cities,
and it will devour all that is around him.

33 “Thus says the Lord of hosts: (DQ)The people of Israel are oppressed, and the people of Judah with them. All who took them captive have held them fast; (DR)they refuse to let them go. 34 (DS)Their Redeemer is strong; (DT)the Lord of hosts is his name. (DU)He will surely plead their cause, that he may give rest to the earth, but unrest to the inhabitants of Babylon.

35 “A sword against the Chaldeans, declares the Lord,
and against the inhabitants of Babylon,
and against (DV)her officials and her (DW)wise men!
36 A sword against the diviners,
that they may become fools!
A sword against her (DX)warriors,
that they may be destroyed!
37 A sword against her horses and against her chariots,
and against all (DY)the foreign troops in her midst,
that (DZ)they may become women!
(EA)A sword against all her treasures,
that they may be plundered!
38 (EB)A drought against her waters,
that they may be dried up!
(EC)For it is a land of images,
and they are mad over idols.

39 (ED)“Therefore wild beasts shall dwell with hyenas in Babylon,[d] and ostriches shall dwell in her. She shall never again have people, nor be inhabited for all generations. 40 (EE)As when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah and their neighboring cities, declares the Lord, (EF)so no man shall dwell there, and no son of man shall sojourn in her.

41 (EG)“Behold, a people comes from the north;
a mighty nation and many kings
are stirring from the farthest parts of the earth.
42 They lay hold of bow and spear;
they are cruel and have no mercy.
The sound of them is like the roaring of the sea;
they ride on horses,
arrayed as a man for battle
against you, O daughter of Babylon!

43 “The king of Babylon heard the report of them,
and his hands fell helpless;
anguish seized him,
pain as of a woman in labor.

44 (EH)“Behold, like a lion coming up from the thicket of the Jordan against a perennial pasture, I will suddenly make them run away from her, and I will appoint over her whomever I choose. For who is like me? Who will summon me? What shepherd (EI)can stand before me? 45 Therefore hear (EJ)the plan that the Lord has made against Babylon, (EK)and the purposes that he has formed against the land of the Chaldeans: (EL)Surely the little ones of their flock shall be dragged away; surely their fold shall be appalled at their fate. 46 (EM)At the sound of the capture of Babylon the earth shall tremble, and her cry shall be heard among the nations.”

Titus 1

Greeting

Paul, a servant[a] of God and (A)an apostle of Jesus Christ, for the sake of the faith of God's elect and (B)their knowledge of the truth, (C)which accords with godliness, (D)in hope of eternal life, which God, (E)who never lies, (F)promised (G)before the ages began[b] and (H)at the proper time manifested in his word[c] (I)through the preaching (J)with which I have been entrusted (K)by the command of God our Savior;

To Titus, (L)my true child in (M)a common faith:

(N)Grace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Savior.

Qualifications for Elders

(O)This is why I left you in Crete, so that you might put what remained into order, and (P)appoint elders in every town as I directed you— (Q)if anyone is above reproach, the husband of one wife,[d] and his children are believers[e] and not open to the charge of (R)debauchery or insubordination. For an overseer,[f] (S)as God's steward, must be above reproach. He must not (T)be arrogant or quick-tempered or a drunkard or violent (U)or greedy for gain, but hospitable, a lover of good, self-controlled, upright, holy, (V)and disciplined. He must (W)hold firm to the trustworthy word as taught, so that he may be able to give instruction in (X)sound[g] doctrine and also to rebuke those who contradict it.

10 For there are many who are insubordinate, (Y)empty talkers and deceivers, especially those of (Z)the circumcision party.[h] 11 They must be silenced, since (AA)they are upsetting whole families by teaching (AB)for shameful gain what they ought not to teach. 12 (AC)One of the Cretans,[i] a prophet of their own, said, “Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.”[j] 13 This testimony is true. Therefore (AD)rebuke them (AE)sharply, that they (AF)may be sound in the faith, 14 (AG)not devoting themselves to Jewish myths and (AH)the commands of people (AI)who turn away from the truth. 15 (AJ)To the pure, all things are pure, but to the defiled and (AK)unbelieving, nothing is pure; but both (AL)their minds and their consciences are defiled. 16 (AM)They profess to know God, but they (AN)deny him by their works. They are detestable, disobedient, (AO)unfit for any good work.

Psalm 97-98

The Lord Reigns

97 (A)The Lord reigns, (B)let the earth rejoice;
let the many (C)coastlands be glad!
(D)Clouds and thick darkness are all around him;
(E)righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne.
(F)Fire goes before him
and burns up his adversaries all around.
His (G)lightnings light up the world;
the earth sees and (H)trembles.
The mountains (I)melt like (J)wax before the Lord,
before (K)the Lord of all the earth.

(L)The heavens proclaim his righteousness,
and all (M)the peoples see his glory.
All worshipers of images are (N)put to shame,
who make their boast in (O)worthless idols;
(P)worship him, all you gods!

Zion hears and (Q)is glad,
and the daughters of Judah rejoice,
because of your judgments, O Lord.
For you, O Lord, are (R)most high over all the earth;
you are exalted far above (S)all gods.

10 O you who love the Lord, (T)hate evil!
He (U)preserves the lives of his (V)saints;
he (W)delivers them from the hand of the wicked.
11 (X)Light (Y)is sown[a] for the righteous,
and joy for the upright in heart.
12 (Z)Rejoice in the Lord, O you righteous,
and (AA)give thanks to his holy name!

Make a Joyful Noise to the Lord

A Psalm.

98 Oh sing to the Lord (AB)a new song,
for he has done (AC)marvelous things!
His (AD)right hand and his holy arm
have worked salvation for him.
The Lord has (AE)made known his salvation;
he has (AF)revealed his righteousness in (AG)the sight of the nations.
He has (AH)remembered his (AI)steadfast love and faithfulness
to the house of Israel.
All (AJ)the ends of the earth have seen
(AK)the salvation of our God.

(AL)Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth;
(AM)break forth into joyous song and sing praises!
Sing praises to the Lord with the lyre,
with the lyre and the (AN)sound of melody!
With (AO)trumpets and the sound of (AP)the horn
(AQ)make a joyful noise before the King, the Lord!

(AR)Let the sea roar, and (AS)all that fills it;
(AT)the world and those who dwell in it!
Let the rivers (AU)clap their hands;
let (AV)the hills sing for joy together
before the Lord, for he comes
to (AW)judge the earth.
He will judge the world with righteousness,
and the peoples with equity.

Proverbs 26:13-16

13 (A)The sluggard says, “There is a lion in the road!
There is a lion in the streets!”
14 As a door turns on its hinges,
so does a sluggard on his bed.
15 (B)The sluggard buries his hand in the dish;
it wears him out to bring it back to his mouth.
16 The sluggard is (C)wiser in his own eyes
(D)than seven men who can answer sensibly.

Jeremiah 48:1-49:22

Judgment on Moab

48 (A)Concerning Moab.

Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel:

“Woe to (B)Nebo, for it is laid waste!
(C)Kiriathaim is put to shame, it is taken;
the fortress is put to shame (D)and broken down;
the renown of Moab is no more.
In (E)Heshbon they planned disaster against her:
‘Come, let us cut her off (F)from being a nation!’
You also, O (G)Madmen, shall be brought to silence;
the sword shall pursue you.

“A voice! A cry from (H)Horonaim,
‘Desolation and great destruction!’
Moab is destroyed;
her little ones have made a cry.
(I)For at the ascent of Luhith
they go up weeping;[a]
for (J)at the descent of Horonaim
they have heard the distressed cry[b] of destruction.
Flee! Save yourselves!
You will be like (K)a juniper in the desert!
For, (L)because you trusted in your works and your treasures,
you also shall be taken;
and (M)Chemosh (N)shall go into exile
with (O)his priests and his officials.
(P)The destroyer shall come upon every city,
and no city shall escape;
the valley shall perish,
and (Q)the plain shall be destroyed,
as the Lord has spoken.

“Give wings to Moab,
for she would fly away;
her cities shall become a desolation,
with no inhabitant in them.

10 (R)“Cursed is he who does (S)the work of the Lord with slackness, and cursed is he who keeps back his sword from bloodshed.

11 “Moab has been at ease from his youth
and has (T)settled on his dregs;
he has not been emptied from vessel to vessel,
nor has he gone into exile;
so his taste remains in him,
and his scent is not changed.

12 “Therefore, behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I shall send to him pourers who will pour him, and empty his vessels and break his[c] jars in pieces. 13 Then (U)Moab shall be ashamed of Chemosh, as (V)the house of Israel was ashamed of (W)Bethel, their confidence.

14 “How do you say, ‘We are heroes
and mighty men of war’?
15 The destroyer of (X)Moab and his cities has come up,
and the choicest of his young men have (Y)gone down to slaughter,
declares (Z)the King, (AA)whose name is the Lord of hosts.
16 The calamity of Moab is near at hand,
and his affliction hastens swiftly.
17 (AB)Grieve for him, all you who are around him,
and all who know his name;
say, (AC)‘How the mighty scepter is broken,
the glorious staff.’

18 (AD)“Come down from your glory,
and sit on the parched ground,
O inhabitant of (AE)Dibon!
For the destroyer of Moab has come up against you;
he has destroyed your strongholds.
19 (AF)Stand by the way (AG)and watch,
O inhabitant of (AH)Aroer!
Ask him who flees and her who escapes;
say, ‘What has happened?’
20 Moab is put to shame, for it is broken;
(AI)wail and cry!
Tell it beside (AJ)the Arnon,
that (AK)Moab is laid waste.

21 “Judgment has come upon (AL)the tableland, upon Holon, and (AM)Jahzah, and Mephaath, 22 and (AN)Dibon, and (AO)Nebo, and Beth-diblathaim, 23 and (AP)Kiriathaim, and Beth-gamul, and (AQ)Beth-meon, 24 and (AR)Kerioth, and (AS)Bozrah, and all the cities of the land of Moab, far and near. 25 (AT)The horn of Moab is cut off, and (AU)his arm is broken, declares the Lord.

26 (AV)“Make him drunk, (AW)because he magnified himself against the Lord, so that Moab shall (AX)wallow in his vomit, (AY)and he too shall be held in derision. 27 (AZ)Was not Israel a derision to you? (BA)Was he found among thieves, that whenever you spoke of him (BB)you wagged your head?

28 (BC)“Leave the cities, and dwell in the rock,
O inhabitants of Moab!
Be (BD)like the dove that nests
in the sides of the mouth of a gorge.
29 (BE)We have heard of the pride of Moab—
he is very proud—
of his loftiness, his pride, and his arrogance,
and the haughtiness of his heart.
30 I know his insolence, declares the Lord;
(BF)his boasts are false,
his deeds are false.
31 (BG)Therefore I wail for Moab;
I cry out for all Moab;
for the men of (BH)Kir-hareseth I mourn.
32 More than for (BI)Jazer I weep for you,
(BJ)O vine of (BK)Sibmah!
(BL)Your branches passed over the sea,
reached to the Sea of (BM)Jazer;
on your summer fruits and your grapes
the destroyer has fallen.
33 (BN)Gladness and joy have been taken away
from the fruitful land of Moab;
I have made the wine cease from the winepresses;
no one treads them with shouts of joy;
the shouting is not the shout of joy.

34 (BO)“From the outcry at Heshbon even to Elealeh, as far as Jahaz they utter their voice, from Zoar to (BP)Horonaim and Eglath-shelishiyah. For the waters of Nimrim also have become desolate. 35 And I will bring to an end in Moab, declares the Lord, him who offers sacrifice in (BQ)the high place and makes offerings to his god. 36 Therefore my heart moans for Moab like a flute, and my heart moans like a flute for the men of (BR)Kir-hareseth. (BS)Therefore the riches they gained have perished.

37 (BT)“For every head is shaved and every beard cut off. (BU)On all the hands are gashes, and (BV)around the waist is sackcloth. 38 On all the housetops of Moab and in the squares there is nothing but lamentation, for I have broken Moab like (BW)a vessel for which no one cares, declares the Lord. 39 How it is broken! How they wail! (BX)How Moab has turned his back in shame! So Moab (BY)has become a derision and a horror to all that are around him.”

40 For thus says the Lord:
“Behold, (BZ)one shall fly swiftly like an eagle
(CA)and spread his wings against Moab;
41 (CB)the cities shall be taken
and the strongholds seized.
(CC)The heart of the warriors of Moab shall be in that day
like the heart of (CD)a woman in her birth pains;
42 Moab shall be (CE)destroyed and be no longer a people,
because (CF)he magnified himself against the Lord.
43 (CG)Terror, pit, and snare
are before you, O inhabitant of Moab!
declares the Lord.
44 He who flees from the terror
shall fall into the pit,
and he who climbs out of the pit
shall be caught in the snare.
(CH)For I will bring these things upon Moab,
the year of their punishment,
declares the Lord.

45 “In the shadow of Heshbon
fugitives stop without strength,
for fire came out from Heshbon,
flame from the house of Sihon;
it has destroyed (CI)the forehead of Moab,
the crown of (CJ)the sons of tumult.
46 (CK)Woe to you, O Moab!
The people of (CL)Chemosh are undone,
for your sons have been taken captive,
and your daughters into captivity.
47 (CM)Yet I will restore the fortunes of Moab
in the latter days, declares the Lord.”
Thus far is the judgment on Moab.

Judgment on Ammon

49 (CN)Concerning the Ammonites.

Thus says the Lord:

“Has Israel no sons?
Has he no heir?
Why then has (CO)Milcom[d] (CP)dispossessed Gad,
and his people settled in its cities?
Therefore, behold, the days are coming,
declares the Lord,
when I will cause (CQ)the battle cry to be heard
against (CR)Rabbah of the Ammonites;
it shall become a desolate (CS)mound,
and its villages shall be burned with fire;
then Israel shall dispossess those who dispossessed him,
says the Lord.

“Wail, O (CT)Heshbon, for Ai is laid waste!
Cry out, O daughters of (CU)Rabbah!
(CV)Put on sackcloth,
lament, and run to and fro among the hedges!
For (CW)Milcom shall go into exile,
(CX)with his priests and his officials.
Why do you boast of your valleys,[e]
(CY)O faithless daughter,
(CZ)who trusted in her treasures, saying,
‘Who will come against me?’
Behold, (DA)I will bring terror upon you,
declares the Lord God of hosts,
from all who are around you,
and you shall be driven out, every man straight before him,
with none to gather the fugitives.

“But (DB)afterward I will restore the fortunes of the Ammonites, declares the Lord.”

Judgment on Edom

Concerning (DC)Edom.

Thus says the Lord of hosts:

(DD)“Is wisdom no more in (DE)Teman?
(DF)Has counsel perished from the prudent?
(DG)Has their wisdom vanished?
(DH)Flee, turn back, dwell in the depths,
O inhabitants of (DI)Dedan!
For I will bring the calamity of Esau upon him,
(DJ)the time when I punish him.
(DK)If grape gatherers came to you,
would they not leave (DL)gleanings?
(DM)If thieves came by night,
would they not destroy only enough for themselves?
10 (DN)But I have stripped Esau bare;
(DO)I have uncovered his hiding places,
and he is not able to conceal himself.
His children are destroyed, and his brothers,
and his neighbors; and (DP)he is no more.
11 (DQ)Leave your fatherless children; I will keep them alive;
(DR)and let your widows trust in me.”

12 For thus says the Lord: (DS)“If those who did not deserve to drink the cup must drink it, (DT)will you go unpunished? You shall not go unpunished, but you must drink. 13 (DU)For I have sworn by myself, declares the Lord, that (DV)Bozrah shall become (DW)a horror, a taunt, a waste, and a curse, and all her cities shall be perpetual wastes.”

14 (DX)I have heard a message from the Lord,
and an envoy has been sent among the nations:
(DY)“Gather yourselves together and come against her,
and rise up for battle!
15 For behold, I will make you small among the nations,
despised among mankind.
16 The horror you inspire has deceived you,
and the pride of your heart,
you who live in the clefts of the rock,[f]
who hold the height of the hill.
Though you (DZ)make your nest as high as the eagle's,
I will bring you down from there,
declares the Lord.

17 (EA)“Edom shall become a horror. (EB)Everyone who passes by it will be horrified (EC)and will hiss because of all its disasters. 18 (ED)As when Sodom and Gomorrah and their (EE)neighboring cities were overthrown, says the Lord, (EF)no man shall dwell there, (EG)no man shall sojourn in her. 19 (EH)Behold, (EI)like a lion coming up from (EJ)the jungle of the Jordan against a perennial pasture, I will suddenly make him[g] run away from her. And I will appoint over her whomever I choose. (EK)For who is like me? (EL)Who will summon me? (EM)What shepherd can stand before me? 20 Therefore hear the plan that the Lord has made against (EN)Edom and the purposes that he has formed against the inhabitants of (EO)Teman: (EP)Even the little ones of the flock shall be dragged away. Surely their fold shall be appalled at their fate. 21 At the sound of their fall (EQ)the earth shall tremble; the sound of their cry shall be heard at the Red Sea. 22 Behold, (ER)one shall mount up and fly swiftly like an eagle and spread his wings against (ES)Bozrah, and the heart of the warriors of Edom shall be in that day like the heart (ET)of a woman in her birth pains.”

2 Timothy 4

Preach the Word

(A)I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, (B)who is to judge the living and the dead, and by (C)his appearing and his kingdom: preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; (D)reprove, rebuke, and (E)exhort, with complete patience and teaching. (F)For the time is coming when people will not endure (G)sound[a] teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and (H)will turn away from listening to the truth and (I)wander off into myths. As for you, (J)always be sober-minded, (K)endure suffering, do the work of (L)an evangelist, (M)fulfill your ministry.

For (N)I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my (O)departure has come. (P)I have fought the good fight, (Q)I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is (R)laid up for me (S)the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, (T)the righteous judge, will award to me on (U)that day, and not only to me but also to all (V)who have loved his appearing.

Personal Instructions

(W)Do your best to come to me soon. 10 For (X)Demas, (Y)in love with (Z)this present world, (AA)has deserted me and gone to Thessalonica. Crescens has gone to Galatia,[b] (AB)Titus to Dalmatia. 11 (AC)Luke alone is with me. Get (AD)Mark and bring him with you, for he is very useful to me for ministry. 12 (AE)Tychicus I have sent to Ephesus. 13 When you come, bring the cloak that I left with Carpus at Troas, also the books, and above all the parchments. 14 (AF)Alexander the coppersmith did me great harm; (AG)the Lord will repay him according to his deeds. 15 Beware of him yourself, for he strongly opposed our message. 16 At my first defense no one came to stand by me, but all deserted me. (AH)May it not be charged against them! 17 But (AI)the Lord stood by me and (AJ)strengthened me, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and (AK)all the Gentiles might hear it. So (AL)I was rescued (AM)from the lion's mouth. 18 The Lord will rescue me from every evil deed and bring me safely into his heavenly kingdom. (AN)To him be the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Final Greetings

19 Greet (AO)Prisca and Aquila, and (AP)the household of Onesiphorus. 20 Erastus remained at Corinth, and I left (AQ)Trophimus, who was ill, at Miletus. 21 (AR)Do your best to come before winter. Eubulus sends greetings to you, as do Pudens and Linus and Claudia and all the brothers.[c]

22 The Lord be (AS)with your spirit. (AT)Grace be with you.[d]

Psalm 95-96

Let Us Sing Songs of Praise

95 Oh come, let us sing to the Lord;
let us (A)make a joyful noise to (B)the rock of our salvation!
Let us (C)come into his presence with thanksgiving;
let us (D)make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise!
For the Lord is (E)a great God,
and a great King (F)above all gods.
In his hand are the depths of the earth;
the heights of the mountains are his also.
The sea is his, for (G)he made it,
and his hands formed (H)the dry land.

Oh come, let us worship and bow down;
let us (I)kneel before the Lord, our (J)Maker!
For he is our (K)God,
and we are the people of his (L)pasture,
and the sheep of his hand.
(M)Today, if you (N)hear his voice,
(O)do not harden your hearts, as at (P)Meribah,
as on the day at (Q)Massah in the wilderness,
when your fathers put me to the (R)test
and put me to the proof, though they had seen my (S)work.
10 (T)For forty years I loathed that generation
and said, “They are a people who go astray in their heart,
and they have not known (U)my ways.”
11 Therefore I (V)swore in my wrath,
“They shall not enter (W)my rest.”

Worship in the Splendor of Holiness

96 (X)Oh sing to the Lord (Y)a new song;
sing to the Lord, all the earth!
Sing to the Lord, bless his name;
(Z)tell of his salvation from day to day.
Declare his glory among the nations,
his marvelous works among all the peoples!
For (AA)great is the Lord, and (AB)greatly to be praised;
he is to be feared above (AC)all gods.
For all the gods of the peoples are worthless idols,
but the Lord (AD)made the heavens.
Splendor and majesty are before him;
(AE)strength and beauty are in his sanctuary.

Ascribe to the Lord, O (AF)families of the peoples,
(AG)ascribe to the Lord glory and strength!
Ascribe to the Lord (AH)the glory due his name;
bring (AI)an offering, and (AJ)come into his courts!
Worship the Lord in (AK)the splendor of holiness;[a]
(AL)tremble before him, all the earth!

10 Say among the nations, (AM)“The Lord reigns!
Yes, the world is established; it shall never be moved;
he will (AN)judge the peoples with equity.”

11 Let (AO)the heavens be glad, and let (AP)the earth rejoice;
let (AQ)the sea roar, and all that fills it;
12 let (AR)the field exult, and everything in it!
Then shall all (AS)the trees of the forest sing for joy
13 before the Lord, for he comes,
for he comes (AT)to judge the earth.
He will judge the world in righteousness,
and the peoples in his faithfulness.

Proverbs 26:9-12

Like (A)a thorn that goes up into the hand of a drunkard
is a proverb in the mouth of fools.
10 Like an archer who wounds everyone
is one who hires a passing fool or drunkard.[a]
11 Like (B)a dog that returns to his vomit
is (C)a fool who repeats his folly.
12 Do you see a man who is (D)wise in his own eyes?
(E)There is more hope for a fool than for him.

Jeremiah 44:24-47:7

24 Jeremiah said to all the people and all the women, “Hear the word of the Lord, (A)all you of Judah who are in the land of Egypt. 25 Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: (B)You and your wives have declared with your mouths, and have fulfilled it with your hands, saying, ‘We will surely perform our vows that we have made, (C)to make offerings to the queen of heaven and to pour out drink offerings to her.’ Then confirm your vows and perform your vows! 26 Therefore hear the word of the Lord, (D)all you of Judah who dwell in the land of Egypt: (E)Behold, I have sworn by my great name, says the Lord, (F)that my name shall no more be invoked by the mouth of any man of Judah in all the land of Egypt, (G)saying, ‘As the Lord God lives.’ 27 (H)Behold, I am watching over them for disaster and not for good. (I)All the men of Judah who are in the land of Egypt shall be consumed by the sword and by famine, until there is an end of them. 28 (J)And those who escape the sword shall return from the land of Egypt to the land of Judah, (K)few in number; and all the remnant of Judah, who came to the land of Egypt to live, (L)shall know whose word will stand, mine or theirs. 29 This shall be the sign to you, declares the Lord, that I will punish you in this place, in order that you may know that (M)my words will surely stand against you for harm: 30 Thus says the Lord, Behold, I will give (N)Pharaoh Hophra king of Egypt into the hand of his enemies (O)and into the hand of those who seek his life, as I gave (P)Zedekiah king of Judah into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, who was his enemy and sought his life.”

Message to Baruch

45 The word that Jeremiah the prophet spoke to (Q)Baruch the son of Neriah, (R)when he wrote these words in a book at the dictation of Jeremiah, (S)in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah: “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, to you, O Baruch: You said, (T)‘Woe is me! For the Lord has added sorrow to my pain. (U)I am weary with my groaning, (V)and I find no rest.’ Thus shall you say to him, Thus says the Lord: (W)Behold, what I have built I am breaking down, and what I have planted I am plucking up—that is, the whole land. And (X)do you seek great things for yourself? Seek them not, for behold, (Y)I am bringing disaster upon all flesh, declares the Lord. But I will give you (Z)your life as a prize of war in all places to which you may go.”

Judgment on Egypt

46 The word of the Lord that came to Jeremiah the prophet (AA)concerning the nations.

About Egypt. (AB)Concerning the army of Pharaoh Neco, king of Egypt, which was by the river Euphrates at Carchemish and which Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon defeated in (AC)the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah:

(AD)“Prepare buckler and shield,
and advance for battle!
(AE)Harness the horses;
mount, O horsemen!
Take your stations with your helmets,
(AF)polish your spears,
put on your armor!
Why have I seen it?
They are dismayed
and have turned backward.
Their (AG)warriors are beaten down
and have fled in haste;
(AH)they look not back—
(AI)terror on every side!
declares the Lord.

“The swift cannot flee away,
nor the warrior escape;
(AJ)in the north by the river Euphrates
(AK)they have stumbled and fallen.

“Who is this, (AL)rising like the Nile,
like rivers (AM)whose waters surge?
Egypt rises like the Nile,
like rivers (AN)whose waters surge.
He said, ‘I will rise, I will cover the earth,
I will destroy cities and their inhabitants.’
(AO)Advance, O horses,
and rage, O chariots!
Let the warriors go out:
men of Cush and (AP)Put who handle the shield,
(AQ)men of Lud, skilled in handling the bow.
10 (AR)That day is the day of the Lord God of hosts,
(AS)a day of vengeance,
(AT)to avenge himself on his foes.
(AU)The sword shall devour and be sated
and drink its fill of their blood.
For the Lord God of hosts holds (AV)a sacrifice
(AW)in the north country (AX)by the river Euphrates.
11 (AY)Go up to Gilead, and take (AZ)balm,
O virgin daughter of Egypt!
In vain you have used many medicines;
(BA)there is no healing for you.
12 The nations have heard of your shame,
and the earth is full of your cry;
(BB)for warrior has stumbled against warrior;
they have both fallen together.”

13 The word that the Lord spoke to Jeremiah the prophet about the coming of (BC)Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon to strike the land of Egypt:

14 “Declare in Egypt, and proclaim in (BD)Migdol;
proclaim in (BE)Memphis and (BF)Tahpanhes;
say, (BG)‘Stand ready and be prepared,
for (BH)the sword shall devour around you.’
15 Why are your mighty ones face down?
They do not stand[a]
because the Lord thrust them down.
16 He made many stumble, (BI)and they fell,
and they said one to another,
‘Arise, and let us go back to our own people
and to the land of our birth,
(BJ)because of the sword of the oppressor.’
17 Call the name of (BK)Pharaoh, king of Egypt,
‘Noisy one who lets the hour go by.’

18 (BL)“As I live, declares the King,
(BM)whose name is the Lord of hosts,
like (BN)Tabor among the mountains
and like (BO)Carmel by the sea, shall one come.
19 (BP)Prepare yourselves baggage for exile,
O (BQ)inhabitants of Egypt!
For (BR)Memphis shall become a waste,
a ruin, (BS)without inhabitant.

20 “A beautiful (BT)heifer is Egypt,
but a biting fly (BU)from the north has come upon her.
21 Even her hired soldiers in her midst
are like (BV)fattened calves;
yes, they have turned and fled together;
they did not stand,
for the day of their calamity has come upon them,
(BW)the time of their punishment.

22 “She makes (BX)a sound like a serpent gliding away;
for her enemies march in force
and come against her with axes
(BY)like those who fell trees.
23 (BZ)They shall cut down her forest,
declares the Lord,
though it is impenetrable,
because (CA)they are more numerous than locusts;
they are without number.
24 The daughter of Egypt shall be put to shame;
she shall be delivered into the hand of (CB)a people from the north.”

25 The Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, said: “Behold, I am bringing punishment upon (CC)Amon of (CD)Thebes, and Pharaoh and Egypt (CE)and her gods and her kings, upon Pharaoh and those who trust in him. 26 (CF)I will deliver them into the hand of those who seek their life, into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and his officers. (CG)Afterward Egypt shall be inhabited (CH)as in the days of old, declares the Lord.

27 (CI)“But fear not, O Jacob my servant,
nor be dismayed, O Israel,
for behold, I will save you from far away,
and your offspring from the land of their captivity.
Jacob shall return and have quiet and ease,
and none shall make him afraid.
28 (CJ)Fear not, O Jacob my servant,
declares the Lord,
for I am with you.
I will make a full end of all the nations
to which I have driven you,
but of you I will not make a full end.
(CK)I will discipline you in just measure,
and I will by no means leave you unpunished.”

Judgment on the Philistines

47 The word of the Lord that came to Jeremiah the prophet (CL)concerning the Philistines, before Pharaoh struck down (CM)Gaza.

“Thus says the Lord:
(CN)Behold, waters are rising (CO)out of the north,
(CP)and shall become an overflowing torrent;
they shall overflow (CQ)the land and all that fills it,
the city and those who dwell in it.
Men shall cry out,
and every inhabitant of the land shall wail.
At the noise of the stamping of the hoofs of his stallions,
(CR)at the rushing of his chariots, at the rumbling of their wheels,
the fathers (CS)look not back to their children,
so feeble are their hands,
because of the day that is coming to destroy
all (CT)the Philistines,
to cut off from (CU)Tyre and Sidon
every helper that remains.
For the Lord is destroying the Philistines,
(CV)the remnant of the coastland of (CW)Caphtor.
(CX)Baldness has come upon Gaza;
(CY)Ashkelon has perished.
O remnant of their valley,
(CZ)how long will you gash yourselves?
(DA)Ah, sword of the Lord!
How long till you are quiet?
Put yourself into your scabbard;
rest and be still!
How can it[b] be quiet
(DB)when the Lord has given it a charge?
Against (DC)Ashkelon and against the seashore
(DD)he has appointed it.”

2 Timothy 2:22-3:17

22 So (A)flee (B)youthful passions and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, along with (C)those who call on the Lord (D)from a pure heart. 23 Have nothing to do with foolish, ignorant (E)controversies; you know that they breed quarrels. 24 And (F)the Lord's servant[a] must not be quarrelsome but (G)kind to everyone, (H)able to teach, patiently enduring evil, 25 correcting his opponents (I)with gentleness. God (J)may perhaps grant them repentance (K)leading to a knowledge of the truth, 26 and they may come to their senses and escape from (L)the snare of the devil, after being captured by him to do his will.

Godlessness in the Last Days

But understand this, that (M)in the last days there will come times of difficulty. For people will be (N)lovers of self, (O)lovers of money, (P)proud, (Q)arrogant, abusive, (R)disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, (S)heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, (T)not loving good, treacherous, reckless, (U)swollen with conceit, (V)lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having the appearance of godliness, but (W)denying its power. (X)Avoid such people. For among them are (Y)those who creep into households and capture weak women, burdened with sins and led astray by various passions, always learning and never able to (Z)arrive at a knowledge of the truth. Just as (AA)Jannes and Jambres (AB)opposed Moses, so these men also oppose the truth, (AC)men corrupted in mind and (AD)disqualified regarding the faith. But they will not get very far, for their folly will be plain to all, (AE)as was that of those two men.

All Scripture Is Breathed Out by God

10 (AF)You, however, have followed my teaching, my conduct, my aim in life, my faith, my patience, my love, my steadfastness, 11 my persecutions and sufferings that happened to me (AG)at Antioch, (AH)at Iconium, and (AI)at Lystra—which persecutions I endured; yet (AJ)from them all (AK)the Lord rescued me. 12 Indeed, all who desire to (AL)live a godly life in Christ Jesus (AM)will be persecuted, 13 while (AN)evil people and impostors will go on from bad to worse, deceiving and (AO)being deceived. 14 But as for you, (AP)continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom[b] you learned it 15 and how (AQ)from childhood you have been acquainted with (AR)the sacred writings, (AS)which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 (AT)All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that (AU)the man of God[c] may be complete, (AV)equipped (AW)for every good work.

Psalm 94

The Lord Will Not Forsake His People

94 O Lord, God of (A)vengeance,
O God of vengeance, (B)shine forth!
(C)Rise up, O (D)judge of the earth;
repay to the (E)proud what they deserve!
O Lord, (F)how long shall the wicked,
how long shall (G)the wicked exult?
They pour out their (H)arrogant words;
all (I)the evildoers boast.
They (J)crush your people, O Lord,
and afflict your heritage.
They kill (K)the widow and the sojourner,
and murder (L)the fatherless;
(M)and they say, “The Lord does not see;
the God of Jacob does not perceive.”

(N)Understand, O dullest of the people!
Fools, when will you be wise?
(O)He who planted the ear, does he not hear?
He who formed the eye, does he not see?
10 He who (P)disciplines the nations, does he not rebuke?
He who (Q)teaches man knowledge—
11 (R)the Lord—knows the thoughts of man,
that they are (S)but a breath.[a]

12 (T)Blessed is the man whom you (U)discipline, O Lord,
and whom you teach out of your law,
13 to give him (V)rest from (W)days of trouble,
until (X)a pit is dug for the wicked.
14 (Y)For the Lord will not forsake his (Z)people;
he will not abandon his (AA)heritage;
15 for (AB)justice will return to the righteous,
and all the upright in heart will (AC)follow it.

16 (AD)Who rises up for me against the wicked?
Who stands up for me against evildoers?
17 (AE)If the Lord had not been my help,
my soul would soon have lived in the land of (AF)silence.
18 When I thought, (AG)“My foot slips,”
your steadfast love, O Lord, (AH)held me up.
19 When the cares of my heart are many,
your consolations cheer my soul.
20 Can (AI)wicked rulers be allied with you,
those who frame[b] injustice by (AJ)statute?
21 They (AK)band together against the life of the righteous
and condemn (AL)the innocent to death.[c]
22 But the Lord has become my (AM)stronghold,
and my God (AN)the rock of my (AO)refuge.
23 He will bring back on them (AP)their iniquity
and (AQ)wipe them out for their wickedness;
the Lord our God will wipe them out.

Proverbs 26:6-8

Whoever sends a message by the hand of a fool
cuts off his own feet and (A)drinks violence.
Like a lame man's legs, which hang useless,
is a proverb in the mouth of fools.
Like one who binds the stone in the sling
is (B)one who gives honor to a fool.

Jeremiah 42:1-44:23

Warning Against Going to Egypt

42 Then (A)all the commanders of the forces, and (B)Johanan the son of Kareah and Jezaniah the son of (C)Hoshaiah, and all the people (D)from the least to the greatest, came near and said to Jeremiah the prophet, “Let (E)our plea for mercy come before you, and (F)pray to the Lord your God for us, for all (G)this remnant—(H)because we are left with but a few, as your eyes see us— that (I)the Lord your God may show us the way we should go, and the thing that we should do.” Jeremiah the prophet said to them, “I have heard you. Behold, I will pray to the Lord your God according to your request, and (J)whatever the Lord answers you I will tell you. (K)I will keep nothing back from you.” Then they said to Jeremiah, (L)“May the Lord be a true and (M)faithful witness against us (N)if we do not act according to all the word (O)with which the Lord your God sends you to us. Whether it is good or bad, we will obey the voice of the Lord our God to whom we are sending you, (P)that it may be well with us when we obey the voice of the Lord our God.”

(Q)At the end of ten days the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah. Then he summoned (R)Johanan the son of Kareah and (S)all the commanders of the forces who were with him, and all the people (T)from the least to the greatest, and said to them, “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, (U)to whom you sent me to present your plea for mercy before him: 10 If you will remain in this land, (V)then I will build you up and not pull you down; I will plant you, and not pluck you up; (W)for I relent of the disaster that I did to you. 11 (X)Do not fear the king of Babylon, (Y)of whom you are afraid. (Z)Do not fear him, declares the Lord, (AA)for I am with you, to save you and to deliver you from his hand. 12 (AB)I will grant you mercy, that he may have mercy on you and let you remain in your own land. 13 (AC)But if you say, ‘We will not remain in this land,’ disobeying the voice of the Lord your God 14 and saying, ‘No, (AD)we will go to the land of Egypt, where we shall not see war or (AE)hear the sound of the trumpet or (AF)be hungry for bread, and we will dwell there,’ 15 then hear the word of the Lord, O remnant of Judah. Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: (AG)If you set your faces to enter Egypt (AH)and go to live there, 16 then the sword (AI)that you fear shall overtake you there in the land of Egypt, and the famine of which you are afraid shall follow close after you to Egypt, (AJ)and there you shall die. 17 All the men who set their faces to go to Egypt to live there shall die by the sword, by famine, and by pestilence. They shall have (AK)no remnant or survivor from the disaster that I will bring upon them.

18 “For thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: (AL)As my anger and my wrath were poured out on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so my wrath will be poured out on you when you go to Egypt. (AM)You shall become an execration, a horror, a curse, and a taunt. You shall see this place no more. 19 The Lord has said to you, O remnant of Judah, (AN)‘Do not go to Egypt.’ (AO)Know for a certainty that I have warned you this day 20 that you have gone astray at the cost of your lives. (AP)For you sent me to the Lord your God, saying, (AQ)‘Pray for us to the Lord our God, and (AR)whatever the Lord our God says, declare to us and we will do it.’ 21 And I have this day declared it to you, but you have not obeyed the voice of the Lord your God in anything (AS)that he sent me to tell you. 22 (AT)Now therefore know for a certainty that you shall die by the sword, by famine, and by pestilence in the place where you desire to go to live.”

Jeremiah Taken to Egypt

43 When Jeremiah finished speaking to all the people all these words of the Lord their God, with which the Lord their God had sent him to them, Azariah the son of (AU)Hoshaiah and (AV)Johanan the son of Kareah and (AW)all the insolent men said to Jeremiah, “You are telling a lie. The Lord our God did not send you to say, (AX)‘Do not go to Egypt to live there,’ but (AY)Baruch the son of Neriah (AZ)has set you against us, (BA)to deliver us into the hand of the Chaldeans, that they may kill us or take us into exile in Babylon.” So (BB)Johanan the son of Kareah and all (BC)the commanders of the forces and all the people did not obey the voice of the Lord, to remain in the land of Judah. But Johanan the son of Kareah and all the commanders of the forces took (BD)all the remnant of Judah who had returned to live in the land of Judah from all the nations to which they had been driven— (BE)the men, the women, the children, (BF)the princesses, and every person whom (BG)Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard had left with (BH)Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, son of Shaphan; also Jeremiah the prophet and Baruch the son of Neriah. And they came into the land of Egypt, for they did not obey the voice of the Lord. And they arrived at (BI)Tahpanhes.

Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah in (BJ)Tahpanhes: “Take in your hands large stones and hide them in the mortar in the pavement that is at the entrance to Pharaoh's palace in (BK)Tahpanhes, in the sight of the men of Judah, 10 and say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Behold, I will send and take Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, (BL)my servant, (BM)and I will set his throne above these stones that I have hidden, and he will spread his royal canopy over them. 11 He shall come (BN)and strike the land of Egypt, (BO)giving over to the pestilence those who are doomed to the pestilence, to captivity those who are doomed to captivity, and to the sword those who are doomed to the sword. 12 (BP)I shall kindle a fire (BQ)in the temples of the gods of Egypt, and he shall burn them (BR)and carry them away captive. (BS)And he shall clean the land of Egypt (BT)as a shepherd cleans his cloak of vermin, and he shall go away from there in peace. 13 He shall break the (BU)obelisks of Heliopolis, which is in the land of Egypt, (BV)and the temples of the gods of Egypt he shall burn with fire.’”

Judgment for Idolatry

44 The word that came to Jeremiah concerning all the Judeans who lived in the land of Egypt, at (BW)Migdol, at (BX)Tahpanhes, at Memphis, and in the land of (BY)Pathros, “Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: You have seen all the disaster that I brought upon Jerusalem and upon all the cities of Judah. Behold, this day (BZ)they are a desolation, and no one dwells in them, because of the evil that they committed, (CA)provoking me to anger, (CB)in that they went to make offerings (CC)and serve other gods that they knew not, neither they, nor you, nor your fathers. (CD)Yet I persistently sent to you all my servants the prophets, saying, ‘Oh, do not do this abomination that I hate!’ (CE)But they did not listen (CF)or incline their ear, to turn from their evil and make no offerings to other gods. (CG)Therefore my wrath and my anger were poured out and kindled in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem, (CH)and they became a waste and a desolation, as at this day. And now thus says the Lord God of hosts, the God of Israel: Why do you commit this great evil (CI)against yourselves, to cut off from you (CJ)man and woman, (CK)infant and child, from the midst of Judah, leaving you no remnant? (CL)Why do you provoke me to anger with the works of your hands, (CM)making offerings to other gods in the land of Egypt where you have come to live, so that you may be cut off and become (CN)a curse and a taunt among all the nations of the earth? Have you forgotten the evil of your fathers, (CO)the evil of the kings of Judah, (CP)the evil of their[a] wives, your own evil, (CQ)and the evil of your wives, which they committed in the land of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem? 10 They have not humbled themselves even to this day, (CR)nor have they feared, nor walked in my law and my statutes that I set before you and before your fathers.

11 “Therefore thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: (CS)Behold, I will set my face against you for harm, to cut off all Judah. 12 I will take the remnant of Judah who have (CT)set their faces to come to the land of Egypt to live, and they shall all be consumed. (CU)In the land of Egypt they shall fall; by the sword and by famine (CV)they shall be consumed. (CW)From the least to the greatest, they shall die by the sword and by famine, (CX)and they shall become an oath, a horror, (CY)a curse, and a taunt. 13 (CZ)I will punish those who dwell in the land of Egypt, as I have punished Jerusalem, with the sword, with famine, and with pestilence, 14 (DA)so that none of the remnant of Judah who have come to live in the land of Egypt shall escape or survive (DB)or return to the land of Judah, to which they desire to return to dwell there. For they shall not return, (DC)except some fugitives.”

15 Then all the men who knew that (DD)their wives had made offerings to other gods, and all the women who stood by, a great assembly, all the people who lived in (DE)Pathros in the land of Egypt, answered Jeremiah: 16 “As for the word that you have spoken to us in the name of the Lord, (DF)we will not listen to you. 17 (DG)But we will do everything that we have vowed, make offerings to (DH)the queen of heaven (DI)and pour out drink offerings to her, (DJ)as we did, both we and our fathers, our kings and our officials, in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem. For then we had plenty of food, and prospered, and saw no disaster. 18 But since we left off making offerings to (DK)the queen of heaven and pouring out drink offerings to her, we have lacked everything (DL)and have been consumed by the sword and by famine.” 19 And the women said,[b] “When we made offerings to the queen of heaven (DM)and poured out drink offerings to her, was it (DN)without our husbands' approval that we made cakes for her bearing her image and poured out drink offerings to her?”

20 Then Jeremiah said to all the people, (DO)men and women, all the people who had given him this answer: 21 (DP)“As for the offerings that you offered in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem, you and your fathers, your kings and your officials, and the people of the land, (DQ)did not the Lord remember them? Did it not come into his mind? 22 (DR)The Lord could no longer bear your evil deeds and (DS)the abominations that you committed. (DT)Therefore your land has become (DU)a desolation and a waste and a curse, (DV)without inhabitant, as it is this day. 23 It is because you made offerings (DW)and because you sinned against the Lord and did not obey the voice of the Lord or walk in his law and in his statutes and in his testimonies (DX)that this disaster has happened to you, as at this day.”

2 Timothy 2:1-21

A Good Soldier of Christ Jesus

You then, (A)my child, (B)be strengthened by the grace that is in Christ Jesus, and (C)what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses (D)entrust to faithful men,[a] (E)who will be able to teach others also. (F)Share in suffering as (G)a good soldier of Christ Jesus. No soldier (H)gets entangled in civilian pursuits, since his aim is to please the one who enlisted him. (I)An athlete is not (J)crowned unless he competes according to the rules. It is (K)the hard-working farmer who ought to have the first share of the crops. Think over what I say, for the Lord will give you understanding in everything.

Remember Jesus Christ, (L)risen from the dead, the (M)offspring of David, (N)as preached in my gospel, (O)for which I am suffering, (P)bound with chains as a criminal. But (Q)the word of God is not bound! 10 Therefore (R)I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain (S)the salvation that is in Christ Jesus with (T)eternal glory. 11 The saying is (U)trustworthy, for:

(V)If we have died with him, we will also (W)live with him;
12 (X)if we endure, we will also reign with him;
(Y)if we deny him, he also will deny us;
13 (Z)if we are faithless, (AA)he remains faithful—

for (AB)he cannot deny himself.

A Worker Approved by God

14 Remind them of these things, and (AC)charge them before God[b] (AD)not to quarrel about words, (AE)which does no good, but only ruins the hearers. 15 Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved,[c] a worker (AF)who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth. 16 But (AG)avoid (AH)irreverent babble, for it will lead people into more and more ungodliness, 17 and their talk will spread like gangrene. Among them are (AI)Hymenaeus and Philetus, 18 who have swerved from the truth, (AJ)saying that the resurrection has already happened. They are upsetting the faith of some. 19 But God's firm foundation stands, bearing this seal: (AK)“The Lord knows those who are his,” and, “Let everyone (AL)who names the name of the Lord depart from iniquity.”

20 Now in (AM)a great house there are not only vessels of gold and silver but also of wood and clay, (AN)some for honorable use, some for dishonorable. 21 Therefore, (AO)if anyone cleanses himself from what is dishonorable,[d] he will be a vessel for honorable use, set apart as holy, useful to the master of the house, (AP)ready for every good work.

Psalm 92-93

How Great Are Your Works

A Psalm. A Song for the Sabbath.

92 (A)It is good to give thanks to the Lord,
to sing praises to your name, (B)O Most High;
to declare your (C)steadfast love in (D)the morning,
and your (E)faithfulness by (F)night,
to the music of (G)the lute and (H)the harp,
to the melody of (I)the lyre.
For you, O Lord, have made me glad by your (J)work;
at (K)the works of your hands I sing for joy.

How (L)great are your works, O Lord!
Your (M)thoughts are very (N)deep!
The stupid man cannot know;
the fool cannot understand this:
that though (O)the wicked sprout like grass
and all (P)evildoers flourish,
they are doomed to destruction forever;
but you, O Lord, are (Q)on high forever.
For behold, your enemies, O Lord,
for behold, your enemies shall perish;
all evildoers shall be (R)scattered.

10 But you have exalted my (S)horn like that of (T)the wild ox;
you have (U)poured over me[a] fresh oil.
11 My (V)eyes have seen the downfall of my enemies;
my ears have heard the doom of my evil assailants.

12 (W)The righteous flourish like the palm tree
and grow like a cedar in Lebanon.
13 They are planted in the house of the Lord;
they flourish in (X)the courts of our God.
14 They still bear fruit in old age;
they are ever full of sap and green,
15 (Y)to declare that the Lord is upright;
he is my (Z)rock, and there is (AA)no unrighteousness in him.

The Lord Reigns

93 (AB)The Lord reigns; he is (AC)robed in majesty;
the Lord is (AD)robed; he has (AE)put on strength as his belt.
(AF)Yes, the world is established; (AG)it shall never be moved.
(AH)Your throne is established from of old;
(AI)you are from everlasting.

(AJ)The floods have lifted up, O Lord,
the floods have lifted up their voice;
the floods lift up their roaring.
Mightier than the thunders of many waters,
mightier than the waves of the sea,
(AK)the Lord (AL)on high is mighty!

Your (AM)decrees are very trustworthy;
(AN)holiness befits your house,
O Lord, forevermore.

Proverbs 26:3-5

(A)A whip for the horse, a bridle for the donkey,
and (B)a rod for the back of fools.

lest he be (E)wise in his own eyes.

Jeremiah 39-41

The Fall of Jerusalem

39 (A)In the ninth year of Zedekiah king of Judah, in the tenth month, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and all his army came against Jerusalem and besieged it. In the eleventh year of Zedekiah, in the fourth month, on the ninth day of the month, a breach was made in the city. Then all (B)the officials of the king of Babylon came (C)and sat in the middle gate: Nergal-sar-ezer of Samgar, Nebu-sar-sekim (D)the Rab-saris, Nergal-sar-ezer the Rab-mag, with all the rest of the officers of the king of Babylon. When Zedekiah king of Judah and all the soldiers saw them, they fled, going out of the city at night by way of the king's garden through the gate between the two walls; and they went toward (E)the Arabah. But the army of the Chaldeans pursued them and overtook Zedekiah in (F)the plains of Jericho. And when they had taken him, they brought him up to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, at (G)Riblah, in the land of Hamath; (H)and he passed sentence on him. The king of Babylon (I)slaughtered the sons of Zedekiah at (J)Riblah before his eyes, and the king of Babylon (K)slaughtered all the nobles of Judah. (L)He put out the eyes of Zedekiah and bound him in chains to take him to Babylon. (M)The Chaldeans burned the king's house and the house of the people, (N)and broke down the walls of Jerusalem. Then (O)Nebuzaradan, the (P)captain of the guard, carried into exile to Babylon the rest of the people who were left in the city, (Q)those who had deserted to him, and the people who remained. 10 Nebuzaradan, the captain of the guard, (R)left in the land of Judah some of the poor people who owned nothing, and gave them vineyards and fields at the same time.

The Lord Delivers Jeremiah

11 Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon gave command concerning Jeremiah through Nebuzaradan, the captain of the guard, saying, 12 (S)“Take him, look after him well, and do him no harm, but deal with him as he tells you.” 13 So (T)Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard, Nebushazban the Rab-saris, Nergal-sar-ezer the Rab-mag, (U)and all the chief officers of the king of Babylon 14 sent and took Jeremiah from (V)the court of the guard. They entrusted him to (W)Gedaliah the son of (X)Ahikam, son of (Y)Shaphan, that he should take him home. So (Z)he lived among the people.

15 The word of the Lord came to Jeremiah (AA)while he was shut up in the court of the guard: 16 “Go, and say to (AB)Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: (AC)Behold, I will fulfill my words against this city for harm and (AD)not for good, and they shall be accomplished before you on that day. 17 But I will deliver you on that day, declares the Lord, and you shall not be given into the hand of the men (AE)of whom you are afraid. 18 For I will surely save you, and you shall not fall by the sword, but you shall have your (AF)life as a prize of war, (AG)because you have put your trust in me, declares the Lord.’”

Jeremiah Remains in Judah

40 The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord (AH)after Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard had let him go from (AI)Ramah, when he took him (AJ)bound in chains along with all the captives of Jerusalem and Judah who were being exiled to Babylon. The captain of the guard took Jeremiah and said to him, (AK)“The Lord your God pronounced this disaster against this place. The Lord has brought it about, and has done as he said. (AL)Because you sinned against the Lord and did not obey his voice, this thing has come upon you. Now, behold, I release you today from (AM)the chains on your hands. (AN)If it seems good to you to come with me to Babylon, come, and I will look after you well, (AO)but if it seems wrong to you to come with me to Babylon, do not come. (AP)See, the whole land is before you; go wherever you think it good and right to go. If you remain,[a] then return to (AQ)Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, son of Shaphan, (AR)whom the king of Babylon appointed governor of the cities of Judah, and dwell with him among the people. Or go wherever you think it right to go.” So the captain of the guard gave him an allowance of food and a present, and let him go. Then Jeremiah went to (AS)Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, at (AT)Mizpah, and lived with him (AU)among the people (AV)who were left in the land.

(AW)When all the captains of the forces in the open country and their men heard that (AX)the king of Babylon had appointed Gedaliah the son of Ahikam governor in the land and had committed to him men, women, and children, those of (AY)the poorest of the land who had not been taken into exile to Babylon, they went to Gedaliah at (AZ)Mizpah—(BA)Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, (BB)Johanan the son of Kareah, Seraiah the son of Tanhumeth, the sons of Ephai the Netophathite, (BC)Jezaniah the son of the Maacathite, they and their men. Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, son of Shaphan, swore to them and their men, saying, “Do not be afraid to serve the Chaldeans. Dwell in the land and serve the king of Babylon, (BD)and it shall be well with you. 10 As for me, I will dwell at (BE)Mizpah, to represent you before the Chaldeans who will come to us. But as for you, (BF)gather wine and summer fruits and oil, and store them in your vessels, and dwell in your cities that you have taken.” 11 Likewise, when all the Judeans who were in (BG)Moab and among (BH)the Ammonites and in (BI)Edom and in other lands heard that the king of Babylon had left a remnant in Judah and had appointed Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, son of Shaphan, as governor over them, 12 (BJ)then all the Judeans returned from all the places to which they had been driven and came to the land of Judah, to Gedaliah at Mizpah. And they (BK)gathered wine and summer fruits in great abundance.

13 Now (BL)Johanan the son of Kareah and (BM)all the leaders of the forces in the open country came to Gedaliah at Mizpah 14 and said to him, “Do you know that Baalis the king of (BN)the Ammonites has sent Ishmael the son of Nethaniah to take your life?” But Gedaliah the son of Ahikam would not believe them. 15 Then Johanan the son of Kareah spoke secretly to Gedaliah at Mizpah, “Please let me go and strike down Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and no one will know it. Why should he take your life, so that all the Judeans who are gathered about you would be scattered, (BO)and the remnant of Judah would perish?” 16 But Gedaliah the son of Ahikam said to Johanan the son of Kareah, “You shall not do this thing, for you are speaking falsely of Ishmael.”

Gedaliah Murdered

41 (BP)In the seventh month, Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, son of Elishama, of the royal family, one of the chief officers of the king, came with ten men to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, at (BQ)Mizpah. As they (BR)ate bread together there at Mizpah, (BS)Ishmael the son of Nethaniah and the ten men with him rose up and struck down Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, son of Shaphan, with the sword, and killed him, (BT)whom the king of Babylon had appointed governor in the land. Ishmael also struck down all the Judeans who were with Gedaliah at (BU)Mizpah, and the Chaldean soldiers who happened to be there.

On the day after the murder of Gedaliah, before anyone knew of it, eighty men arrived from (BV)Shechem and (BW)Shiloh and (BX)Samaria, with (BY)their beards shaved and (BZ)their clothes torn, and (CA)their bodies gashed, (CB)bringing grain offerings and incense to present at the temple of the Lord. And Ishmael the son of Nethaniah came out from (CC)Mizpah to meet them, weeping as he came. As he met them, he said to them, “Come in to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam.” When they came into the city, Ishmael the son of Nethaniah and the men with him slaughtered them and cast them into a cistern. But there were ten men among them who said to Ishmael, “Do not put us to death, for we have (CD)stores of wheat, barley, oil, and honey hidden in the fields.” So he refrained and did not put them to death with their companions.

Now the cistern into which Ishmael had thrown all the bodies of the men whom he had struck down along with[b] Gedaliah was the large cistern that (CE)King Asa had made for defense against (CF)Baasha king of Israel; Ishmael the son of Nethaniah filled it with the slain. 10 Then Ishmael took captive all the rest of the people who were in Mizpah, (CG)the king's daughters and all the people who were left at Mizpah, whom (CH)Nebuzaradan, the captain of the guard, had committed to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam. Ishmael the son of Nethaniah took them captive and set out to cross over to (CI)the Ammonites.

11 But when (CJ)Johanan the son of Kareah and (CK)all the leaders of the forces with him heard of all the evil that Ishmael the son of Nethaniah had done, 12 they took all their men and went to fight against Ishmael the son of Nethaniah. They came upon him at (CL)the great pool that is in (CM)Gibeon. 13 And when all the people who were with Ishmael saw Johanan the son of Kareah and (CN)all the leaders of the forces with him, they rejoiced. 14 (CO)So all the people whom Ishmael had carried away captive from Mizpah turned around and came back, and went to Johanan the son of Kareah. 15 But Ishmael the son of Nethaniah escaped from Johanan with eight men, and went to (CP)the Ammonites. 16 Then Johanan the son of Kareah and (CQ)all the leaders of the forces with him took from Mizpah all the rest of the people whom he had recovered from Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, after he had struck down Gedaliah the son of Ahikam—soldiers, (CR)women, children, and eunuchs, whom Johanan brought back from (CS)Gibeon. 17 And they went and stayed at Geruth (CT)Chimham near (CU)Bethlehem, intending to go to Egypt 18 because of the Chaldeans. For they were afraid of them, because Ishmael the son of Nethaniah had struck down Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, (CV)whom the king of Babylon had made governor over the land.

2 Timothy 1

Greeting

Paul, (A)an apostle of Christ Jesus (B)by the will of God according to (C)the promise of the life that is in Christ Jesus,

To Timothy, (D)my beloved child:

(E)Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

Guard the Deposit Entrusted to You

(F)I thank God (G)whom I serve, as did my ancestors, (H)with a clear conscience, as I remember you (I)constantly in my prayers night and day. (J)As I remember your tears, (K)I long to see you, that I may be filled with joy. I am reminded of (L)your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and (M)your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you as well. For this reason I remind you (N)to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands, for God gave us (O)a spirit not of fear but (P)of power and love and self-control.

Therefore (Q)do not be ashamed of (R)the testimony about our Lord, nor of (S)me his prisoner, but (T)share in suffering for the gospel by the power of God, (U)who saved us and (V)called us to[a] a holy calling, (W)not because of our works but because of (X)his own purpose and grace, which he gave us in Christ Jesus (Y)before the ages began,[b] 10 and which now has (Z)been manifested through (AA)the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, (AB)who abolished death and (AC)brought life and (AD)immortality to light through the gospel, 11 (AE)for which I was appointed a preacher and apostle and teacher, 12 (AF)which is why I suffer as I do. But (AG)I am not ashamed, for (AH)I know whom I have believed, and I am convinced that he is able to guard until (AI)that day (AJ)what has been entrusted to me.[c] 13 (AK)Follow (AL)the pattern of (AM)the sound[d] words (AN)that you have heard from me, in (AO)the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. 14 By the Holy Spirit (AP)who dwells within us, guard (AQ)the good deposit entrusted to you.

15 You are aware that (AR)all who are in Asia turned away from me, among whom are Phygelus and Hermogenes. 16 May the Lord grant mercy to (AS)the household of Onesiphorus, for he often (AT)refreshed me and was not ashamed of (AU)my chains, 17 but when he arrived in Rome (AV)he searched for me earnestly and found me— 18 may the Lord grant him to find mercy from the Lord on (AW)that day!—and you well know all the service he (AX)rendered at Ephesus.

Psalm 90-91

Book Four

From Everlasting to Everlasting

A (A)Prayer of Moses, the (B)man of God.

90 Lord, you have been our (C)dwelling place[a]
in all generations.
(D)Before the (E)mountains were brought forth,
or ever you had formed the earth and the world,
(F)from everlasting to everlasting you are God.

You return man to dust
and say, (G)“Return, (H)O children of man!”[b]
For (I)a thousand years in your sight
are but as (J)yesterday when it is past,
or as (K)a watch in the night.

You (L)sweep them away as with a flood; they are like (M)a dream,
like (N)grass that is renewed in the morning:
in (O)the morning it flourishes and is renewed;
in the evening it (P)fades and (Q)withers.

For we are brought to an end by your anger;
by your wrath we are dismayed.
You have (R)set our iniquities before you,
our (S)secret sins in the light of your presence.

For all our days pass away under your wrath;
we bring our years to an end like a sigh.
10 The years of our life are seventy,
or even by reason of strength eighty;
yet their span[c] is but toil and trouble;
they are soon gone, and we fly away.
11 Who considers the power of your anger,
and your wrath according to the fear of you?

12 (T)So teach us to number our days
that we may get a heart of wisdom.
13 (U)Return, O Lord! (V)How long?
Have (W)pity on your servants!
14 Satisfy us in the (X)morning with your steadfast love,
that we may (Y)rejoice and be glad all our days.
15 Make us glad for as many days as you have (Z)afflicted us,
and for as many years as we have seen evil.
16 Let your (AA)work be shown to your servants,
and your glorious power to their children.
17 Let the (AB)favor[d] of the Lord our God be upon us,
and establish (AC)the work of our hands upon us;
yes, establish the work of our hands!

My Refuge and My Fortress

91 He who dwells in (AD)the shelter of the Most High
will abide in (AE)the shadow of the Almighty.
I will say[e] to the Lord, “My (AF)refuge and my (AG)fortress,
my God, in whom I (AH)trust.”

For he will deliver you from (AI)the snare of the fowler
and from the deadly pestilence.
He will (AJ)cover you with his pinions,
and under his (AK)wings you will (AL)find refuge;
his (AM)faithfulness is (AN)a shield and buckler.
(AO)You will not fear (AP)the terror of the night,
nor the arrow that flies by day,
nor the pestilence that stalks in darkness,
nor the destruction that wastes at noonday.

A thousand may fall at your side,
ten thousand at your right hand,
but it will not come near you.
You will only look with your eyes
and (AQ)see the recompense of the wicked.

Because you have made the Lord your (AR)dwelling place—
the Most High, who is my (AS)refuge[f]
10 (AT)no evil shall be allowed to befall you,
(AU)no plague come near your tent.

11 (AV)For he will command his (AW)angels concerning you
to (AX)guard you in all your ways.
12 On their hands they will bear you up,
lest you (AY)strike your foot against a stone.
13 You will tread on (AZ)the lion and the (BA)adder;
the young lion and (BB)the serpent you will (BC)trample underfoot.

14 “Because he (BD)holds fast to me in love, I will deliver him;
I will protect him, because he (BE)knows my name.
15 When he (BF)calls to me, I will answer him;
I will be with him in trouble;
I will rescue him and (BG)honor him.
16 With (BH)long life I will satisfy him
and (BI)show him my salvation.”

Proverbs 26:1-2

26 Like snow in summer or (A)rain in harvest,
so (B)honor is (C)not fitting for a fool.
Like (D)a sparrow in its flitting, like a swallow in its flying,
(E)a curse that is causeless does not alight.
