Prayer and Encouragements:

Hi, this is Georgee in Liverson. And I have a prayer request. I have not been feeling well. I’m 85 years old. I’ve really done very well for my age. But I just have had some problems with stomach, colon and so forth. And I would really appreciate prayer for healing from the Lord. Thank you.

Hello Daily Audio Bible, this is Robert Ford, this is my first time calling. I’d just like to call for prayer right now for my situation. I’m currently incarcerated in the Sacramento County Jail. And I’m trying to see if I can get mental health diversion. And so, I’m asking for the family, the community, to please pray for me for this situation. And I just thank you in advance. And I just thank God in advance. And I’m just so blessed to be apart of this community. And I thank God for the Daily Audio Bible. Thank you, bye.

Hi, this is PK from Kwahu. And I just want to lift up just our family here in the neighboring islands, there in Maui, specifically the area of Lahaina. We have been devastated as most people have seen across the world, by the fires that raged and just destroyed the entire town. So many people displaced and lost lives gone. And we know that God is merciful and gracious. And I just pray for the people that remain for their cleanup, for everything that needs to take place. That the people would be restored. And so, I just ask that you would just pray with me in lifting up the people and the support and everything that’s necessary for those that remain, to get back on their feet and that the Lord would just surround them with so many people that love Him and that can share the love of Christ. Comfort and restoration. So, pray with me. Father, I do just ask, in the mighty and holy name of Jesus, that You would bless these people on the island of Maui and there in a Lahaina. And we just link arms as the DAB family to just support them, come around and just lift them for You in prayer. We ask that all of the support that would be necessary would meet them right in the need that they would have. And that the outpouring of love and care would be very evident and that the people would receive that. And so, Father, we, we lift it in faith, knowing that You can do exceedingly, abundantly above all we ask or think. And Father, I just thank You also here for my DAB family. And just those that come and link arms to pray together. Bless the islands of Hawaii, specifically there in Maui. In Jesus name. Amen.

So, we conclude the book of Nehemiah today with the dedication of the wall around Jerusalem. Two large quires, a lot of the priests and Levites and leaders up on the wall and they go in opposite directions around the wall worshiping and praising God. What a moment for Nehemiah. It was in his heart to honor God and do good for God’s people, and he’s marching around this thing that was a dream but now is a real thing in this world. And thinking back over all of the drama that it took to get there, but they had completed the mission. And so, Nehemiah returns to serve the king of Persia. Mission accomplished and then sometime later, he was given permission to return to Jerusalem. And when he arrived at Jerusalem he saw how quickly, how quickly they were all falling back into their own ruts, their own patterns. Like Eliashib, who had been given the charge to take care of the storerooms in the temple of the most high God. He had allowed Tobiah, and that name should be familiar to us, because Tobiah was one of the ringleaders instigating the intimidation and trying to sabotage the dream. He was given his own private room in the temple of the most high God. And so, we can maybe smile a little bit as we hear Nehemiah recount how he, how furious he was now. He threw all of his stuff out. And the Levites and the singers who had a vocation to remind the people who God was and what their identity was and where they’re going together. They weren’t able to perform their duties, they weren’t being resourced anymore. So, they had to go find work to pay for their food and their families, which affected the work to be done at the temple, which invariably affected the people. And the Sabbath day was being profaned, all these merchants were coming to do all of their business on the Sabbath day. And the people had begun to do one of the things that undermine them all along, mixing, mixing with the surrounding peoples. And so, we could look at this and go, alright. So, if we’re watching Nehemiah, we watched all of the things that he had to go through to fulfill this vision, but in the end, as we come to the end of the story, it’s an awesome wall and the people still seem totally willing to outright rebel against God. So, does this story just end up being a dramatic story of the rebuilding of the wall of Jerusalem, but nothing really changed? This is where we get the last look at Nehemiah, because he had poured out his life out to accomplish something for God, that he did accomplish, but the work wasn’t exactly the revival he had anticipated. And that’s the thing about dreams and visions that we endure to see come to fruition. In the end, we can’t always influence people to do what they know to be right, but we can follow God’s leadership by taking ownership of us, ourselves doing what is right. The outcome is in God’s hand. Obedience is success. And if we engage with what we believe the Lord is inviting us to do with open hands and open hearts, then regardless of outcomes, we land where Nehemiah lands, please remember me for good, oh my God.

Prayer:

And Father that is our desire, that our lives would bring glory to You, and that we would not attach our identity to outcomes that are in Your hand. To walk the correct path is to obey You. Holy Spirit, come, help us to remember this as we face all kinds of endurance challenges in our lives. But to win this game we call life, to win is to know You, nothing more, nothing less. And in this light, we realize we have all that we need. Come, Holy Spirit, lead us into all truth, we ask in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Nehemiah 12:27-13:31, 1 Corinthians 11:1-16, Psalm 35:1-16, Proverbs 21:17-18

Today is the 17th day of August, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian. It is wonderful to be here with you on the backside of another month. We’ve crossed through that center apex. Now we’re kinda climbing back down so that we can find our way into a new month. But that’s a bit from now, half a month from now roughly. And it is great to be here, now, around the Global Campfire together, as we take the next step forward on our adventure through the Scriptures. And we’ve been working our way through the book of Nehemiah, we have one more step to take in the book of Nehemiah. We will conclude Nehemiah today and move into some new territory tomorrow. Before we take the next step forward in the letter to the Corinthians, known as first Corinthians. So, let’s dive in, Nehemiah chapter 12 verse 27 through 13 verse 31 today.

Commentary:

Alright, so we concluded the book of Nehemiah today. And when we began it, I was just suggesting let’s watch Nehemiah, watch how he conducts himself as a leader. Watch how he gets this vision, this dream, this thing that ignites in him and begins to burn inside of him. As he’s the cupbearer for the king of Persia. Watch as he intercedes and carefully and methodically thinks this through. And then risks, by bringing it to the king. The whole thing could have got shut down right there. For that matter Nehemiah could have been killed right there. Not sure why he would be killed for asking a favor but the king had the power of life and death over everybody. So, we watched Nehemiah prepare. Prepare after getting permission to get all of the things together, that they will need to make the caravan and travel to Jerusalem. And we watched once they got there, how he didn’t announce what he had come to do. He didn’t come in bearing a flag from Persia going like, I have arrived, here’s what we’re going to do. He didn’t even let anybody know. He went out quietly, he looked the whole situation over. He got this situational awareness about what this job of rebuilding the wall would even look like. And then he cast the vision and the people bought in, they understood, they saw, and they engaged. But then they faced all kinds of opposition, whether that be intimidation by enemy voices or threat. Political maneuvering attempts to discredit and destroy reputations. You know, all the kind of stuff people used to do back in those days. And Nehemiah responded. Like that slowed everything down, all of that opposition slowed everything down to the point where half the workforce had to be on guard, and half the workforce had to be guarding. But even the workforce had weapons strapped to them and they were working, mostly one-handed. Like this really had a major effect, but they didn’t stop. They just moved forward more slowly but they accomplished the task, they completed the wall to protect the temple of God, which had been burning inside of Nehemiah.

Nehemiah 12:27-13:31

Nehemiah Dedicates the City Wall

27 When the city wall of Jerusalem was dedicated, the Levites were brought in from wherever they were living, so that they could join in celebrating the dedication with songs of thanksgiving and with the music of cymbals and harps. 28 The Levite families of singers gathered from the area where they had settled around Jerusalem and from the towns around Netophah, 29 and from Bethgilgal, Geba, and Azmaveth. 30 The priests and the Levites performed ritual purification for themselves, the people, the gates, and the city wall.

31 I assembled the leaders of Judah on top of the wall and put them in charge of two large groups to march around the city, giving thanks to God.

The first group went to the right on top of the wall toward the Rubbish Gate.[a] 32 Hoshaiah marched behind the singers, followed by half the leaders of Judah. 33-35 The following priests, blowing trumpets, marched next: Azariah, Ezra, Meshullam, Judah, Benjamin, Shemaiah, and Jeremiah. Next came Zechariah, the son of Jonathan and grandson of Shemaiah. (His ancestors also included Mattaniah, Micaiah, and Zaccur, of the clan of Asaph.) 36 He was followed by other members of his clan—Shemaiah, Azarel, Milalai, Gilalai, Maai, Nethanel, Judah, and Hanani—all of whom carried musical instruments of the kind played by King David, the man of God. Ezra the scholar led this group in the procession. 37 At the Fountain Gate they went up the steps that led to David's City, past David's palace, and back to the wall at the Water Gate, on the east side of the city.

38 The other group of those who gave thanks went to the left along the top of the wall, and I followed with half of the people. We marched past the Tower of the Ovens to the Broad Wall, 39 and from there we went past Ephraim Gate, Jeshanah Gate,[b] the Fish Gate, the Tower of Hananel, and the Tower of the Hundred, to the Sheep Gate. We ended our march near the gate to the Temple.

40 So both the groups that were giving thanks to God reached the Temple area.

In addition to the leaders who were with me, 41 my group included the following priests, blowing trumpets: Eliakim, Maaseiah, Miniamin, Micaiah, Elioenai, Zechariah, and Hananiah; 42 and they were followed by Maaseiah, Shemaiah, Eleazar, Uzzi, Jehohanan, Malchijah, Elam, and Ezer. The singers, led by Jezrahiah, sang at the top of their voices.

43 That day many sacrifices were offered, and the people were full of joy because God had made them very happy. The women and the children joined in the celebration, and the noise they all made could be heard for miles.

Providing for Worship in the Temple

44 At that time men were put in charge of the storerooms where contributions for the Temple were kept, including the tithes and the first grain and fruit that ripened each year. These men were responsible for collecting from the farms near the various cities the contributions for the priests and the Levites which the Law required. All the people of Judah were pleased with the priests and the Levites, 45 (A)because they performed the ceremonies of purification and the other rituals that God had commanded. The Temple musicians and the Temple guards also performed their duties in accordance with the regulations made by King David and his son Solomon. 46 From the time of King David and the musician Asaph long ago, the musicians have led songs of praise and thanksgiving to God. 47 In the time of Zerubbabel and also in the time of Nehemiah, all the people of Israel gave daily gifts for the support of the Temple musicians and the Temple guards. The people gave a sacred offering to the Levites, and the Levites gave the required portion to the priests.

Separation from Foreigners

13 (B)When the Law of Moses was being read aloud to the people, they came to the passage that said that no Ammonite or Moabite was ever to be permitted to join God's people. (C)This was because the people of Ammon and Moab did not give food and water to the Israelites on their way out of Egypt. Instead, they paid money to Balaam to curse Israel, but our God turned the curse into a blessing. When the people of Israel heard this law read, they excluded all foreigners from the community.

Nehemiah's Reforms

The priest Eliashib, who was in charge of the Temple storerooms, had for a long time been on good terms with Tobiah. He allowed Tobiah to use a large room that was intended only for storing offerings of grain and incense, the equipment used in the Temple, the offerings for the priests, and the tithes of grain, wine, and olive oil given to the Levites, to the Temple musicians, and to the Temple guards. While this was going on, I was not in Jerusalem, because in the thirty-second year that Artaxerxes[c] was king of Babylon I had gone back to report to him. After some time I received his permission and returned to Jerusalem. There I was shocked to find that Eliashib had allowed Tobiah to use a room in the Temple. I was furious and threw out all of Tobiah's belongings. I gave orders for the rooms to be ritually purified and for the Temple equipment, grain offerings, and incense to be put back.

10 (D)I also learned that the Temple musicians and other Levites had left Jerusalem and gone back to their farms, because the people had not been giving them enough to live on. 11 I reprimanded the officials for letting the Temple be neglected. And I brought the Levites and musicians back to the Temple and put them to work again. 12 (E)Then all the people of Israel again started bringing to the Temple storerooms their tithes of grain, wine, and olive oil. 13 I put the following men in charge of the storerooms: Shelemiah, a priest; Zadok, a scholar of the Law; and Pedaiah, a Levite. Hanan, the son of Zaccur and grandson of Mattaniah, was to be their assistant. I knew I could trust these men to be honest in distributing the supplies to the other workers.

14 Remember, my God, all these things that I have done for your Temple and its worship.

15 (F)At that time I saw people in Judah pressing juice from grapes on the Sabbath. Others were loading grain, wine, grapes, figs, and other things on their donkeys and taking them into Jerusalem; I warned them not to sell anything on the Sabbath. 16 Some people from the city of Tyre were living in Jerusalem, and they brought fish and all kinds of goods into the city to sell to our people on the Sabbath. 17 I reprimanded the Jewish leaders and told them, “Look at the evil you're doing! You're making the Sabbath unholy. 18 This is exactly why God punished your ancestors when he brought destruction on this city. And yet you insist on bringing more of God's anger down on Israel by profaning the Sabbath.”

19 So I gave orders for the city gates to be shut at the beginning of every Sabbath, as soon as evening[d] began to fall, and not to be opened again until the Sabbath was over. I stationed some of my men at the gates to make sure that nothing was brought into the city on the Sabbath. 20 Once or twice merchants who sold all kinds of goods spent Friday night outside the city walls. 21 I warned them, “It's no use waiting out there for morning to come. If you try this again, I'll use force on you.” From then on they did not come back on the Sabbath. 22 I ordered the Levites to purify themselves and to go and guard the gates to make sure that the Sabbath was kept holy.

Remember me, O God, for this also, and spare me because of your great love.

23 (G)At that time I also discovered that many of the Jewish men had married women from Ashdod, Ammon, and Moab. 24 Half of their children spoke the language of Ashdod or some other language and didn't know how to speak our language. 25 I reprimanded the men, called down curses on them, beat them, and pulled out their hair. Then I made them take an oath in God's name that never again would they or their children intermarry with foreigners. 26 (H)I told them, “It was foreign women that made King Solomon sin. Here was a man who was greater than any of the kings of other nations. God loved him and made him king over all of Israel, and yet he fell into this sin. 27 Are we then to follow your example and disobey our God by marrying foreign women?”

28 (I)Joiada was the son of Eliashib the High Priest, but one of Joiada's sons married the daughter of Sanballat, from the town of Beth Horon, so I made Joiada leave Jerusalem.

29 Remember, God, how those people defiled both the office of priest and the covenant you made with the priests and the Levites.

30 I purified the people from everything foreign; I prepared regulations for the priests and the Levites so that all of them would know their duties; 31 I arranged for the wood used for burning the offerings to be brought at the proper times, and for the people to bring their offerings of the first grain and the first fruits that ripened.

Remember all this, O God, and give me credit for it.

1 Corinthians 11:1-16

11 (A)Imitate me, then, just as I imitate Christ.

Covering the Head in Worship

I praise you because you always remember me and follow the teachings that I have handed on to you. But I want you to understand that Christ is supreme over every man, the husband is supreme over his wife, and God is supreme over Christ. So a man who prays or proclaims God's message in public worship with his head covered disgraces Christ. And any woman who prays or proclaims God's message in public worship with nothing on her head disgraces her husband; there is no difference between her and a woman whose head has been shaved. If the woman does not cover her head, she might as well cut her hair. And since it is a shameful thing for a woman to shave her head or cut her hair, she should cover her head. (B)A man has no need to cover his head, because he reflects the image and glory of God. But woman reflects the glory of man; (C)for man was not created from woman, but woman from man. Nor was man created for woman's sake, but woman was created for man's sake. 10 On account of the angels, then, a woman should have a covering over her head to show that she is under her husband's authority. 11 In our life in the Lord, however, woman is not independent of man, nor is man independent of woman. 12 For as woman was made from man, in the same way man is born of woman; and it is God who brings everything into existence.

13 Judge for yourselves whether it is proper for a woman to pray to God in public worship with nothing on her head. 14 Why, nature itself teaches you that long hair on a man is a disgrace, 15 but on a woman it is a thing of beauty. Her long hair has been given her to serve as a covering. 16 But if anyone wants to argue about it, all I have to say is that neither we nor the churches of God have any other custom in worship.

Psalm 35:1-16

A Prayer for Help[a]

35 Oppose those who oppose me, Lord,
and fight those who fight against me!
Take your shield and armor
and come to my rescue.
Lift up your spear and war ax
against those who pursue me.
Promise that you will save me.

May those who try to kill me
be defeated and disgraced!
May those who plot against me
be turned back and confused!
May they be like straw blown by the wind
as the angel of the Lord pursues them!
May their path be dark and slippery
while the angel of the Lord strikes them down!

Without any reason they laid a trap for me
and dug a deep hole to catch me.
But destruction will catch them before they know it;
they will be caught in their own trap
and fall to their destruction!

Then I will be glad because of the Lord;
I will be happy because he saved me.
10 With all my heart I will say to the Lord,
“There is no one like you.
You protect the weak from the strong,
the poor from the oppressor.”

11 Evil people testify against me
and accuse me of crimes I know nothing about.
12 They pay me back evil for good,
and I sink in despair.
13 But when they were sick, I dressed in mourning;
I deprived myself of food;
I prayed with my head bowed low,
14 as I would pray for a friend or a brother.
I went around bent over in mourning,
as one who mourns for his mother.

15 But when I was in trouble, they were all glad
and gathered around to make fun of me;
strangers beat me
and kept striking me.
16 Like those who would mock a cripple,[b]
they glared at me with hate.

Nehemiah 11:1-12:26

The People Who Lived in Jerusalem

11 The leaders settled in Jerusalem, and the rest of the people drew lots to choose one family out of every ten to go and live in the holy city of Jerusalem, while the rest were to live in the other cities and towns. The people praised anyone else who volunteered to live in Jerusalem. (A)In the other towns and cities the people of Israel, the priests, the Levites, the Temple workers, and the descendants of Solomon's servants lived on their own property in their own towns.

The following is the list of the leading citizens of the province of Judah who lived in Jerusalem:

Members of the tribe of Judah

Athaiah, the son of Uzziah and grandson of Zechariah. His other ancestors included Amariah, Shephatiah, and Mahalalel, descendants of Judah's son Perez.

Maaseiah, the son of Baruch and grandson of Colhozeh. His other ancestors included Hazaiah, Adaiah, Joiarib, and Zechariah, descendants of Judah's son Shelah.

Of the descendants of Perez, 468 outstanding soldiers lived in Jerusalem.

Members of the tribe of Benjamin

Sallu, the son of Meshullam and grandson of Joed. His other ancestors included Pedaiah, Kolaiah, Maaseiah, Ithiel, and Jeshaiah.

Gabbai and Sallai, close relatives[a] of Sallu.

In all, 928 Benjaminites lived in Jerusalem. Joel son of Zichri was their leader, and Judah son of Hassenuah was the second ranking official in the city.

Priests

10 Jedaiah son of Joiarib, and Jachin.

11 Seraiah, the son of Hilkiah and grandson of Meshullam. His ancestors included Zadok, Meraioth, and Ahitub, who was the High Priest. 12 In all, 822 members of this clan served in the Temple.

Adaiah, the son of Jeroham and grandson of Pelaliah. His ancestors included Amzi, Zechariah, Pashhur, and Malchijah. 13 In all, 242 members of this clan were heads of families.

Amashsai, the son of Azarel and grandson of Ahzai. His ancestors included Meshillemoth and Immer. 14 There were 128 members of this clan who were outstanding soldiers. Their leader was Zabdiel, a member of a leading family.[b]

Levites

15 Shemaiah, the son of Hasshub and grandson of Azrikam. His ancestors included Hashabiah and Bunni.

16 Shabbethai and Jozabad, prominent Levites in charge of the work outside the Temple.

17 Mattaniah, the son of Mica and grandson of Zabdi, a descendant of Asaph. He led the Temple choir in singing the prayer of thanksgiving.

Bakbukiah, who was Mattaniah's assistant.

Abda, the son of Shammua and grandson of Galal, a descendant of Jeduthun.

18 In all, 284 Levites lived in the holy city of Jerusalem.

Temple guards

19 Akkub, Talmon, and their relatives, 172 in all.

20 The rest of the people of Israel and the remaining priests and Levites lived on their own property in the other cities and towns of Judah. 21 The Temple workers lived in the part of Jerusalem called Ophel and worked under the supervision of Ziha and Gishpa.

22 The supervisor of the Levites who lived in Jerusalem was Uzzi, the son of Bani and grandson of Hashabiah. His ancestors included Mattaniah and Mica, and he belonged to the clan of Asaph, the clan that was responsible for the music in the Temple services. 23 There were royal regulations stating how the clans should take turns in leading the Temple music each day.

24 Pethahiah son of Meshezabel, of the clan of Zerah and the tribe of Judah, represented the people of Israel at the Persian court.

The People in Other Towns and Cities

25 Many of the people lived in towns near their farms. Those who were of the tribe of Judah lived in Kiriath Arba, Dibon, and Jekabzeel, and in the villages near these cities. 26 They also lived in the cities of Jeshua, Moladah, Bethpelet, 27 and Hazarshual, and in Beersheba and the villages around it. 28 They lived in the city of Ziklag, in Meconah and its villages, 29 in Enrimmon, in Zorah, in Jarmuth, 30 in Zanoah, in Adullam, and in the villages near these towns. They lived in Lachish and on the farms nearby, and in Azekah and its villages. That is to say, the people of Judah lived in the territory between Beersheba in the south and Hinnom Valley in the north.

23 The heads of the Levite families, however, were recorded in the official records only until the time of Jonathan, the grandson of Eliashib.

Assignment of Duties in the Temple

24 Under the direction of Hashabiah, Sherebiah, Jeshua, Binnui,[d] and Kadmiel, the Levites were organized into groups. Two groups at a time praised God responsively and gave thanks to him, in accordance with the instructions given by King David, the man of God.

25 The following Temple guards were in charge of guarding the storerooms by the gates to the Temple: Mattaniah, Bakbukiah, Obadiah, Meshullam, Talmon, and Akkub.

26 These people lived during the time of Joiakim, the son of Joshua and grandson of Jehozadak, and the time of Nehemiah the governor, and the time of Ezra, the priest who was a scholar of the Law.

1 Corinthians 10:14-33

14 So then, my dear friends, keep away from the worship of idols. 15 I speak to you as sensible people; judge for yourselves what I say. 16 (A)The cup we use in the Lord's Supper and for which we give thanks to God: when we drink from it, we are sharing in the blood of Christ. And the bread we break: when we eat it, we are sharing in the body of Christ. 17 Because there is the one loaf of bread, all of us, though many, are one body, for we all share the same loaf.

18 (B)Consider the people of Israel; those who eat what is offered in sacrifice share in the altar's service to God. 19 Do I imply, then, that an idol or the food offered to it really amounts to anything? 20 (C)No! What I am saying is that what is sacrificed on pagan altars is offered to demons, not to God. And I do not want you to be partners with demons. 21 You cannot drink from the Lord's cup and also from the cup of demons; you cannot eat at the Lord's table and also at the table of demons. 22 (D)Or do we want to make the Lord jealous? Do we think that we are stronger than he?

23 (E)“We are allowed to do anything,” so they say. That is true, but not everything is good. “We are allowed to do anything”—but not everything is helpful. 24 None of you should be looking out for your own interests, but for the interests of others.

25 You are free to eat anything sold in the meat market, without asking any questions because of your conscience. 26 (F)For, as the scripture says, “The earth and everything in it belong to the Lord.”

27 If an unbeliever invites you to a meal and you decide to go, eat what is set before you, without asking any questions because of your conscience. 28 But if someone tells you, “This food was offered to idols,” then do not eat that food, for the sake of the one who told you and for conscience' sake— 29 that is, not your own conscience, but the other person's conscience.

“Well, then,” someone asks, “why should my freedom to act be limited by another person's conscience? 30 If I thank God for my food, why should anyone criticize me about food for which I give thanks?”

31 Well, whatever you do, whether you eat or drink, do it all for God's glory. 32 Live in such a way as to cause no trouble either to Jews or Gentiles or to the church of God. 33 Just do as I do; I try to please everyone in all that I do, not thinking of my own good, but of the good of all, so that they might be saved.

Psalm 34:11-22

11 Come, my young friends, and listen to me,
and I will teach you to honor the Lord.
12 (A)Would you like to enjoy life?
Do you want long life and happiness?
13 Then keep from speaking evil
and from telling lies.
14 Turn away from evil and do good;
strive for peace with all your heart.

15 The Lord watches over the righteous
and listens to their cries;
16 but he opposes those who do evil,
so that when they die, they are soon forgotten.
17 The righteous call to the Lord, and he listens;
he rescues them from all their troubles.
18 The Lord is near to those who are discouraged;
he saves those who have lost all hope.

19 Good people suffer many troubles,
but the Lord saves them from them all;
20 (B)the Lord preserves them completely;
not one of their bones is broken.
21 Evil will kill the wicked;
those who hate the righteous will be punished.

22 The Lord will save his people;
those who go to him for protection will be spared.

Nehemiah 9:22-10:39, 1 Corinthians 9:19-10:13, Psalm 34:1-10, Proverbs 21:13

Today is the 15th day of August, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible and here we are in the middle of another one of the months that we get to spend together. And what a joy it is to be here together, right now, where we are taking the next step forward together. And our next step of course, begins where our last one left off and that happens to be in the book of Nehemiah right now. We’ll conclude the book of Nehemiah in a few days, but for now were picking up where we left off and that’s in the middle of this is prayer of confession. All of the people have gathered together, and we began this prayer in yesterday’s reading and pick it up today. So today, Nehemiah chapter 9 verse 22 through 10 verse 39.

Commentary:

Okay so, in First Corinthians, Paul’s continuing to essentially lay out how he looks at things, how he postures himself in ministry. Yesterday’s dealing with this assumption, that he’s exploiting the people for his own gain and shared that it’s honorable and right and good for a servant of God’s people to be able to make a living doing the work. It’s just that that the assumption about him was untrue and incorrect, he wasn’t doing that even though there is nothing wrong with it. Today, Paul talk about his freedom. The fact that he was a free man, could do whatever he wanted, but he was finding it meaningful to look at his life as a slave, to all people, to humanity, because looking at the world and that way allowed Paul to review everybody, no matter where they came from, no matter who they were all set like this, since I’m free from all, I can make myself a slave to all, in order to gain even more people to the Jews. I became like a Jew to gain the Jews to those under the law. I became like one under the law. Again, those under the law to those free from the law, I became like one free from the law to gain those free from the law to the weak, I became weak, in order to gain the weak, I have become all things to all people, so that by all means, I may save some. I do all these things because of the Gospel so that I can be a participant in it. So, we’re invited and encouraged to look at our own lives and the way that we posture our own selves, so that rather than ranking each other and looking at people as beneath us, we see everyone as an opportunity to reveal God to in some way, big or small. And it’s helpful, even though we know this to be true, it’s helpful that when we find ourselves in conflict, or we find ourselves in some way being condescending or looking down. Jesus loves them absolutely, absolutely as much as He loves you. So, even though we know this to be true. It’s difficult, this is hard. What Paul is talking about is important and revolutionary and would change our entire lives, but it’s hard. Paul acknowledges that he essentially, tells us that the self-discipline it’s necessary. The…the observing of ourselves, the changing of the way that we look at people requires a level of commitment, like that of an athlete who competes, pulses those athletes they train to win so it’s a commitment to this way of life and it’s easy to get off track and it’s easy to get seduced away. Paul uses examples from the Scriptures stories that we are reading about the ways in which the people fell away. Paul says, those stories are examples for us so that we don’t repeat and this will require vigilant awareness and bogus counsel. And I quote, “so let the one who thinks he is standing be careful that he does not fall, no trial is overtaken you that is not faced by others and God is faithful. He will not let you be tried beyond what you are able to bear, but with the trial will also provide a way out, so that you may be able to endure it.” Paul told us today in Corinthians, are things that we can actually put to use, the things we know, we just have to put them into practice, humbling ourselves so that we can find common ground with whoever we’re talking to. Knowing that the interaction is an opportunity to reveal God in some way, this can change the atmosphere of our life. Understanding that that this is a discipline that we have to commit to as an athlete would train their skills is helpful in acknowledging that this can be difficult and requires vigilance and commitment, we’re training to be a certain way. And then, as Paul did, looking…looking at the stories of the past, seeing where those roads lead in determining not to repeat so that we are aware that we are vigilant about the things that will Paul was in the wrong direction. These are things to live by.

Prayer:

Holy Spirit, come. Because left to our own devices, we do not live as we should. We do not even live in a way that is healthy for us. You are the source of life. You know all about it, when every moment, every breath that we take is an unknown for us. We have never been right here, right now before and we do not know all that we think that we know about this world or its people. You do, You are the creator and the source of it all. Show us how to live peaceable lives. Lives that reveal You and all that we do and say and think. We pray this in Jesus name. Amen.

Prayer and Encouragements:

Hey everyone, it’s your sister The Prayer Walker. Though I haven’t actually been walking too much at the moment. I just want to give a testimony that prayers on the Prayer Wall are an answer to a, on the Prayer Wall, I’m Secret Replaced Poet. And I put up a couple of posts regarding my sisters pregnancy. And my sister Timmy, and to shorten the story, all through her pregnancy the doctors were saying that there were issues with blood flow and that the baby was going to be born really small. And that it would have to be born in, it would have to spend time in the NICU. And that you know, there are gonna be all these different things wrong with him. And he was born on Tuesday, the 1st of August. And glory to God, there was nothing wrong with him. He needed no specialist care. They brought home a healthy baby. A few days later he had to go back into hospital for some light therapy for his jaundice. But he’s home. He’s a week old. And both mother and baby are doing well. I just wanted to give that encouragement, that this is a prayerful community. And the prayers are heard by God. So, I’m just grateful to all of you guys. I also just want to let you guys know, Junk to Treasure, Lisa the Encourager, and Jackson, Blind Tony, I’m praying for you all. And of course, the Hardin Family. So, those of the names I’ve mentioned but God bless you all and may He continue to encourage and uplift you all in Jesus name. Amen.

Hello DAB family, this is Diana from Florida. And I want to pray for God’s Tree. She was a praying for a minister and his wife whom who had lost their two daughters to social services due to some accidents that have occurred. Dear Heavenly Father, I lift up this minister and his wife and their two daughters to You. Father God, these little girls are disoriented. They have been placed in social services and they are scared and want to be back with their parents. I pray oh Lord God, they are, those two girls would be comforted, oh Lord. And that in the name of Jesus, the caretakers whom have them currently, oh Lord, would treat them with love, dignity and respect. As the decisions that need to be made are made in this particular case. I also pray over God, that the truth would be exposed. Oh Father, if this minister and his wife have been nothing but responsible and loving parents to those children, I pray Father God, that the truth would come out, oh Lord God. And that, in the name of Jesus, all lies of the enemy would be dispelled. In the name of Jesus Christ, oh Lord God. I pray, oh Lord, that they would recognize that the bruising on her body, on the last little daughters body is due to the CPR that happened and that the hits on the head from her older sister to her younger, was due to the fact that they were playing and I guess there was an accident that occurred with the tablet. And so, Lord, I pray that these things would be, come to the light and that in the name of Jesus, oh Lord, they would be vindicated. And Father God, if not, if there’s something else going on, please bring it to light Lord. We ask in Jesus name.

Good morning DAB family. This is Simone calling in from Texas. And this call is for Winter. Sweet girl, I just want to say to you that the race is not for the swift. It is for the strong. So, try not to be as bogged down with others thoughts, feelings and opinions of you. But aside from that, let’s go ahead and pray. Father God, on today we come boldly God, boldy before Your throne of grace, Lord God. Thanking You for breathing life into us for yet another day. God, on today, I want to lift up my sister Winter, Father God. Your word, Lord God, says that You have not given us a spirit of fear but of love and a sound mind and there’s a reason that scripture says a sound mind. So, Father God, right now I speak a sound mind over Winter in Jesus name. I thank You, Lord God, right now that based on Your word, that says where two or more gather together, there You are also, Lord God. So, I ask that You would pour out your spirit over Winter, Father God and give her peace in her mind, Lord God. Give her a sound mind Jesus. And allow her to be able to stand. Be able to stand, Father God. So, we thank you right now for a spirit of love, peace, joy and a sound mind for Winter, Lord God. I thank You that Your presence is also with us. I thank You for loving her. I thank You, I thank You, that right now You are wrapping Your loving arms around her, Lord God. And giving her the soundness of mind, the love, joy and peace that she needs in this season of her life. So, we thank You, Father God, for being an omnipotent God and we thank You for Your grace and Your love and Your mercy. It’s in Jesus name we pray. Amen.

Hello, my DAB family, this is Mark Street from Sydney, Australia. And today is the 10th and I’ve just was listening to tonight’s podcast. I heard His Little Sharie, you’re in so much pain. I feel empathize, I do have a little bit of neuropathy because of diabetes. And I could not imagine how much more you’re suffering. There’s nothing more I can humanly say so let me just go to prayer. Dear Heavenly Father, we lift up our dear sister. My Little Sharie to You Lord. Lord, You know how much she loves You. Lord, we know that You can miraculously heal. Lord, and if it’s not Your plan to heal at this moment, take away the suffering, the pain, or send her to the right doctor with the right treatment, Lord. Lord, it’s so hard to focus when you’re in pain, Lord. To focus on You, Lord, is hard, Lord. So, please Lord. We ask in Your name. I love you Little Sharie. And praying for you and thank you for your such dedication to this community. Mark Street from Sydney, Australia. Bye.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Tuesday August 15, 2023 (NIV)

Nehemiah 9:22-10:39

22 (A)“You let them conquer nations and kingdoms,
lands that bordered their own.
They conquered the land of Heshbon, where Sihon ruled,
and the land of Bashan, where Og was king.
23 (B)You gave them as many children as there are stars in the sky,
and let them conquer and live in the land
that you had promised their ancestors to give them.
24 (C)They conquered the land of Canaan;
you overcame the people living there.
You gave your people the power to do as they pleased
with the people and kings of Canaan.
25 (D)Your people captured fortified cities,
fertile land, houses full of wealth,
cisterns already dug,
olive trees, fruit trees, and vineyards.
They ate all they wanted and grew fat;
they enjoyed all the good things you gave them.

26 (E)“But your people rebelled and disobeyed you;
they turned their backs on your Law.
They killed the prophets who warned them,
who told them to turn back to you.
They insulted you time after time,
27 so you let their enemies conquer and rule them.
In their trouble they called to you for help,
and you answered them from heaven.
In your great mercy you sent them leaders
who rescued them from their foes.
28 When peace returned, they sinned again,
and again you let their enemies conquer them.
Yet when they repented and asked you to save them,
in heaven you heard, and time after time
you rescued them in your great mercy.
29 (F)You warned them to obey your teachings,
but in pride they rejected your laws,
although keeping your Law is the way to life.
Hard-headed and stubborn, they refused to obey.
30 (G)Year after year you patiently warned them.
You inspired your prophets to speak,
but your people were deaf,
so you let them be conquered by other nations.
31 And yet, because your mercy is great,
you did not forsake or destroy them.
You are a gracious and merciful God!

32 (H)“O God, our God, how great you are!
How terrifying, how powerful!
You faithfully keep your covenant promises.
From the time when Assyrian kings oppressed us,
even till now, how much we have suffered!
Our kings, our leaders, our priests and prophets,
our ancestors, and all our people have suffered.
Remember how much we have suffered!
33 You have done right to punish us;
you have been faithful, even though we have sinned.
34 Our ancestors, our kings, leaders, and priests
have not kept your Law.
They did not listen to your commands and warnings.
35 With your blessing, kings ruled your people
when they lived in the broad, fertile land you gave them;
but they failed to turn from sin and serve you.
36 And now we are slaves in the land that you gave us,
this fertile land which gives us food.
37 What the land produces goes to the kings
that you put over us because we sinned.
They do as they please with us and our livestock,
and we are in deep distress!”

The Agreement

28 We, the people of Israel, the priests, the Levites, the Temple guards, the Temple musicians, the Temple workers, and all others who in obedience to God's Law have separated themselves from the foreigners living in our land, we, together with our wives and all our children old enough to understand, 29 do hereby join with our leaders in an oath, under penalty of a curse if we break it, that we will live according to God's Law, which God gave through his servant Moses; that we will obey all that the Lord, our Lord, commands us; and that we will keep all his laws and requirements.

30 (I)We will not intermarry with the foreigners living in our land.

31 (J)If foreigners bring grain or anything else to sell to us on the Sabbath or on any other holy day, we will not buy from them.

Every seventh year we will not farm the land, and we will cancel all debts.

32 (K)Every year we will each contribute one-eighth of an ounce of silver to help pay the expenses of the Temple.

33 We will provide for the Temple worship the following: the sacred bread, the daily grain offering, the animals to be burned each day as sacrifices, the sacred offerings for Sabbaths, New Moon Festivals, and other festivals, the other sacred offerings, the offerings to take away the sins of Israel, and anything else needed for the Temple.

34 We, the people, priests, and Levites, will draw lots each year to determine which clans are to provide wood to burn the sacrifices offered to the Lord our God, according to the requirements of the Law.

35 (L)We will take to the Temple each year an offering of the first grain we harvest and of the first fruit that ripens on our trees.

36 (M)The first son born to each of us we will take to the priests in the Temple and there, as required by the Law, dedicate him to God. We will also dedicate the first calf born to each of our cows, and the first lamb or kid born to each of our sheep or goats.

37 (N)We will take to the priests in the Temple the dough made from the first grain harvested each year and our other offerings of wine, olive oil, and all kinds of fruit.

We will take to the Levites, who collect tithes in our farming villages, the tithes from the crops that grow on our land. 38 (O)Priests who are descended from Aaron are to be with the Levites when tithes are collected, and for use in the Temple the Levites are to take to the Temple storerooms one-tenth of all the tithes they collect. 39 The people of Israel and the Levites are to take the contributions of grain, wine, and olive oil to the storerooms where the utensils for the Temple are kept and where the priests who are on duty, the Temple guards, and the members of the Temple choir have their quarters.

We will not neglect the house of our God.

1 Corinthians 9:19-10:13

19 I am a free man, nobody's slave; but I make myself everybody's slave in order to win as many people as possible. 20 While working with the Jews, I live like a Jew in order to win them; and even though I myself am not subject to the Law of Moses, I live as though I were when working with those who are, in order to win them. 21 In the same way, when working with Gentiles, I live like a Gentile, outside the Jewish Law, in order to win Gentiles. This does not mean that I don't obey God's law; I am really under Christ's law. 22 Among the weak in faith I become weak like one of them, in order to win them. So I become all things to all people, that I may save some of them by whatever means are possible.

23 All this I do for the gospel's sake, in order to share in its blessings. 24 Surely you know that many runners take part in a race, but only one of them wins the prize. Run, then, in such a way as to win the prize. 25 (A)Every athlete in training submits to strict discipline, in order to be crowned with a wreath that will not last; but we do it for one that will last forever. 26 That is why I run straight for the finish line; that is why I am like a boxer who does not waste his punches. 27 I harden my body with blows and bring it under complete control, to keep myself from being disqualified after having called others to the contest.

Warnings against Idols

10 (B)I want you to remember, my friends, what happened to our ancestors who followed Moses. They were all under the protection of the cloud, and all passed safely through the Red Sea. In the cloud and in the sea they were all baptized as followers of Moses. (C)All ate the same spiritual bread (D)and drank the same spiritual drink. They drank from the spiritual rock that went with them; and that rock was Christ himself. (E)But even then God was not pleased with most of them, and so their dead bodies were scattered over the desert.

(F)Now, all of this is an example for us, to warn us not to desire evil things, as they did, (G)nor to worship idols, as some of them did. As the scripture says, “The people sat down to a feast which turned into an orgy of drinking and sex.” (H)We must not be guilty of sexual immorality, as some of them were—and in one day twenty-three thousand of them fell dead. (I)We must not put the Lord[a] to the test, as some of them did—and they were killed by snakes. 10 (J)We must not complain, as some of them did—and they were destroyed by the Angel of Death.

11 All these things happened to them as examples for others, and they were written down as a warning for us. For we live at a time when the end is about to come.

12 If you think you are standing firm you had better be careful that you do not fall. 13 (K)Every test that you have experienced is the kind that normally comes to people. But God keeps his promise, and he will not allow you to be tested beyond your power to remain firm; at the time you are put to the test, he will give you the strength to endure it, and so provide you with a way out.

Psalm 34:1-10

(A)In Praise of God's Goodness[a]

34 I will always thank the Lord;
I will never stop praising him.
I will praise him for what he has done;
may all who are oppressed listen and be glad!
Proclaim with me the Lord's greatness;
let us praise his name together!

I prayed to the Lord, and he answered me;
he freed me from all my fears.
The oppressed look to him and are glad;
they will never be disappointed.
The helpless call to him, and he answers;
he saves them from all their troubles.
His angel guards those who honor the Lord
and rescues them from danger.

(B)Find out for yourself how good the Lord is.
Happy are those who find safety with him.
Honor the Lord, all his people;
those who obey him have all they need.
10 Even lions go hungry for lack of food,
but those who obey the Lord lack nothing good.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Monday August 14, 2023 (NIV)

Nehemiah 8:1-9:21

all the people gathered together(A) at the square in front of the Water Gate.(B) They asked the scribe Ezra(C) to bring the book of the law of Moses(D) that the Lord had given Israel. On the first day of the seventh month,(E) the priest Ezra(F) brought the law(G) before the assembly of men, women, and all who could listen with understanding. While he was facing the square in front of the Water Gate,(H) he read out of it from daybreak until noon before the men, the women, and those who could understand. All the people listened attentively[a] to the book of the law.(I) The scribe Ezra stood on a high wooden platform(J) made for this purpose. Mattithiah, Shema, Anaiah, Uriah, Hilkiah, and Maaseiah stood beside him on his right; to his left were Pedaiah, Mishael, Malchijah, Hashum, Hash-baddanah, Zechariah, and Meshullam. Ezra opened the book in full view of all the people, since he was elevated above everyone. As he opened it, all the people stood up. Ezra blessed the Lord, the great God, and with their hands uplifted(K) all the people said, “Amen, Amen!” (L) Then they knelt low and worshiped the Lord with their faces to the ground.(M)

Jeshua, Bani, Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodiah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, and Pelaiah,(N) who were Levites,[b](O) explained the law(P) to the people as they stood in their places. They read out of the book of the law of God, translating and giving the meaning so that the people could understand what was read. Nehemiah the governor,(Q) Ezra the priest and scribe,(R) and the Levites who were instructing the people said to all of them, “This day(S) is holy to the Lord your God. Do not mourn or weep.”(T) For all the people were weeping as they heard the words of the law. 10 Then he said to them, “Go and eat what is rich, drink what is sweet, and send portions to those who have nothing prepared,(U) since today(V) is holy to our Lord. Do not grieve, because the joy of the Lord is your strength.”[c](W) 11 And the Levites quieted all the people, saying, “Be still,(X) since today(Y) is holy. Don’t grieve.” 12 Then all the people began to eat and drink, send portions, and have a great celebration,(Z) because they had understood the words that were explained to them.

Festival of Shelters Observed

13 On the second day, the family heads of all the people, along with the priests and Levites,(AA) assembled before the scribe Ezra(AB) to study the words of the law. 14 They found written in the law how the Lord had commanded through Moses that the Israelites should dwell in shelters during the festival of the seventh month.(AC) 15 So they proclaimed and spread this news throughout their towns and in Jerusalem, saying, “Go out to the hill country and bring back branches of olive, wild olive, myrtle, palm, and other leafy trees to make shelters, just as it is written.”(AD) 16 The people went out, brought back branches, and made shelters for themselves on each of their rooftops(AE) and courtyards, the court of the house of God, the square by the Water Gate,(AF) and the square by the Ephraim Gate.(AG) 17 The whole community that had returned from exile(AH) made shelters and lived in them. The Israelites had not celebrated like this from the days of Joshua son of Nun until that day.(AI) And there was tremendous joy.(AJ) 18 Ezra[d] read out of the book of the law of God(AK) every day, from the first day to the last. The Israelites celebrated the festival for seven days, and on the eighth day there was a solemn assembly, according to the ordinance.(AL)

National Confession of Sin

On the twenty-fourth day of this month(AM) the Israelites assembled; they were fasting, wearing sackcloth, and had put dust on their heads.(AN) Those of Israelite descent separated themselves from all foreigners,(AO) and they stood(AP) and confessed their sins and the iniquities of their ancestors.(AQ) While they stood in their places,(AR) they read from the book of the law of the Lord their God for a fourth of the day and spent another fourth of the day(AS) in confession(AT) and worship of the Lord their God. Jeshua, Bani, Kadmiel, Shebaniah, Bunni, Sherebiah, Bani, and Chenani stood on the raised platform built for the Levites(AU) and cried out loudly to the Lord their God. Then the Levites—Jeshua, Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabneiah, Sherebiah, Hodiah, Shebaniah, and Pethahiah(AV)—said, “Stand up. Blessed be the Lord your God from everlasting to everlasting.”(AW)

Blessed be your glorious name,(AX)
and may it be exalted above all blessing and praise.
You,[e] Lord, are the only God.[f](AY)
You created the heavens,
the highest heavens with all their stars,
the earth and all that is on it,
the seas and all that is in them.
You give life to all of them,(AZ)
and all the stars of heaven worship you.(BA)
You, the Lord,
are the God who chose Abram
and brought him out of Ur of the Chaldeans,(BB)
and changed his name to Abraham.(BC)
You found his heart faithful in your sight,(BD)
and made a covenant with him
to give the land of the Canaanites,
Hethites, Amorites, Perizzites,
Jebusites, and Girgashites—
to give it to his descendants.(BE)
You have fulfilled your promise,
for you are righteous.

You saw the oppression of our ancestors in Egypt(BF)
and heard their cry at the Red Sea.
10 You performed signs and wonders against Pharaoh,
all his officials, and all the people of his land,(BG)
for you knew how arrogantly they treated our ancestors.
You made a name for yourself
that endures to this day.
11 You divided the sea before them,
and they crossed through it on dry ground.(BH)
You hurled their pursuers into the depths
like a stone into raging water.(BI)
12 You led them with a pillar of cloud by day,
and with a pillar of fire by night,
to illuminate the way they should go.(BJ)
13 You came down on Mount Sinai,(BK)
and spoke to them from heaven.
You gave them impartial ordinances, reliable instructions,
and good statutes and commands.
14 You revealed your holy Sabbath to them,
and gave them commands, statutes, and instruction
through your servant Moses.(BL)
15 You provided bread from heaven(BM) for their hunger;
you brought them water from the rock(BN) for their thirst.
You told them to go in and possess the land
you had sworn[g] to give them.(BO)

16 But our ancestors acted arrogantly;
they became stiff-necked and did not listen to your commands.
17 They refused to listen
and did not remember your wonders
you performed among them.(BP)
They became stiff-necked and appointed a leader
to return to their slavery in Egypt.[h](BQ)
But you are a forgiving God,
gracious and compassionate,
slow to anger and abounding in faithful love,(BR)
and you did not abandon them.
18 Even after they had cast an image of a calf
for themselves and said,
“This is your god who brought you out of Egypt,”(BS)
and they had committed terrible blasphemies,
19 you did not abandon them in the wilderness
because of your great compassion.
During the day the pillar of cloud
never turned away from them,
guiding them on their journey.
And during the night the pillar of fire
illuminated the way they should go.(BT)
20 You sent your good Spirit(BU) to instruct them.
You did not withhold your manna(BV) from their mouths,
and you gave them water for their thirst.(BW)
21 You provided for them in the wilderness forty years,(BX)
and they lacked nothing.
Their clothes did not wear out,
and their feet did not swell.(BY)

1 Corinthians 9:1-18

Paul’s Example as an Apostle

Am I not free? Am I not an apostle? Have I not seen Jesus our Lord? Are you not my work in the Lord? If I am not an apostle to others, at least I am to you, because you are the seal(A) of my apostleship in the Lord.

My defense to those who examine me is this: Don’t we have the right to eat and drink?(B) Don’t we have the right to be accompanied by a believing wife[a] like the other apostles,(C) the Lord’s brothers, and Cephas?(D) Or do only Barnabas(E) and I have no right to refrain from working? Who serves as a soldier at his own expense?(F) Who plants a vineyard and does not eat its fruit? Or who shepherds a flock and does not drink the milk from the flock?

Am I saying this from a human perspective? Doesn’t the law also say the same thing? For it is written in the law of Moses, Do not muzzle an ox(G) while it treads out grain.[b](H) Is God really concerned about oxen? 10 Isn’t he really saying it for our sake? Yes, this is written for our sake,(I) because he who plows ought to plow in hope,(J) and he who threshes should thresh in hope of sharing the crop.(K) 11 If we have sown spiritual things for you, is it too much if we reap material benefits from you? 12 If others have this right to receive benefits from you, don’t we even more? Nevertheless, we have not made use of this right; instead, we endure everything(L) so that we will not hinder the gospel of Christ.

13 Don’t you know that those who perform the temple services eat the food from the temple, and those who serve at the altar(M) share in the offerings of the altar? 14 In the same way, the Lord has commanded that those who preach the gospel should earn their living by the gospel.(N)

15 For my part I have used none of these rights, nor have I written these things that they may be applied in my case. For it would be better for me to die than for anyone to deprive me of my boast! 16 For if I preach the gospel, I have no reason to boast, because I am compelled to preach[c]—and woe to me if I do not preach the gospel! 17 For if I do this willingly, I have a reward, but if unwillingly, I am entrusted(O) with a commission. 18 What then is my reward? To preach the gospel and offer it free of charge and not make full use of my rights in the gospel.(P)

Psalm 33:12-22

12 Happy is the nation whose God is the Lord
the people he has chosen to be his own possession!(A)

13 The Lord looks down from heaven;
he observes everyone.(B)
14 He gazes on all the inhabitants of the earth
from his dwelling place.(C)
15 He forms the hearts of them all;
he considers all their works.(D)
16 A king is not saved by a large army;
a warrior will not be rescued by great strength.(E)
17 The horse is a false hope for safety;
it provides no escape by its great power.(F)

18 But look, the Lord keeps his eye on those who fear him—
those who depend on his faithful love(G)
19 to rescue them from death
and to keep them alive in famine.(H)

20 We wait for the Lord;(I)
he is our help and shield.(J)
21 For our hearts rejoice in him(K)
because we trust in his holy name.(L)
22 May your faithful love rest on us, Lord,
for we put our hope in you.(M)

Hey everybody, Tony the Narrator here. I just want to join my sister in her call for prayer and say…

Nehemiah 5:14-7:73, 1 Corinthians 8:1-13, Psalm 33:1-11, Proverbs 21:8-10

Today is the 13th day of August, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. Welcome to the middle of the month of August, welcome to the middle of the summer I guess in the northern hemisphere, it’s definitely apparent here in the rolling hills, Tennessee. I guess, welcome to the middle of the winter if you’re in the southern hemisphere. But no matter where we are, welcome to a brand-new shiny, sparkly week. It’s all out there for us friends, my brothers and sisters. We have a story to tell with this week. May our lives tell the story of God’s goodness and faithfulness. And since we’re all here, since we’re all around the Global Campfire, we should probably take the next step forward in our journey through the Scriptures. And that next step leads us back into the book of Nehemiah. The Jewish exiles are rebuilding the wall around Jerusalem in order to protect the temple of God, and they’re doing it in record time, and it’s about halfway done, all the way around the city. But they are facing all kinds of intimidation and opposition from external sources that are there to taunt and intimidate and threaten them, but also from the inside, were certain people with…with wealth, with means are oppressing and enslaving other fellow Hebrew people who don’t have as much. So, there is a vision to rebuild the fortifications around Jerusalem, to protect the temple of God. There is that vision and to bring that vision to fruition, it follows the path of opposition and endurance. And let’s continue the journey. So, this week we’ll read from the New English Translation, and today Nehemiah chapter 5 verse 14 through 7 verse 73.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for this brand-new week that we are entering together and as we step through that threshold, we come to the Scriptures to lead and guide us and we thank You for this gift, knowing that every day of this week, we can come back, we can gather, we can listen, we can hear wisdom from Your word, and we can get direction and clarity for the issues that we face in our lives and we thank You for that. So, as we move into this week, we open ourselves to You. Our hearts are open to You, nothing is off-limits to You. We trust You. You are the only one in whom we can fully trust, and we trust You to lead us into all truth, and we believe this we ask for it, in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Prayer and Encouragements:

This is Grateful in Tennessee. I’m calling, responding to Linda in North Idaho. She called today on August the 7th about men creating a lack of sense of safety for their lives and a sense of betrayal and that it takes them a while to get over with that, get over it that. And so, she came at it from a lady’s perspective, a wife, a woman. And I’ll look at it from a male perspective. And she is absolutely, 100% correct. And that while I thought I was the perfect husband being a, you know, doing the all the right things with working two jobs and preaching and teaching and taking care of the kids and all those types of things that, you know, and then I got involved in internet pornography and flirtatious affairs. And my wife found out about it and it was damaging. It was heartbreaking to her. And when I starting going to counseling and to therapy with other men like myself, we all commented about how we were better but our wives weren’t. And our therapist reminded us that you know, we had years of damage we’ve done to our wives and our relationships. And that it was gonna take them time to come back. And I did as Linda said, I had to humble myself. And it wasn’t easy. But I humbled myself before the Lord, through, well, He humbled me, how about that. Cause I didn’t do anything. God humbled me. I surrendered and life is good. My marriage is better than it ever has been. And that was 5/6 years ago. And we’ve been married for 35 years almost. So, anyway, it just, I just agree with Linda. It takes time. But men, we are protectors, not predators. And we …

Hello DABers, this Kay from Ohio. I just wanted to pray and give some encouragement for I think he said Morning Birth. That you’re going through something with your wife, and you don’t wanna go through divorce. And your kids are picking sides. And that just tugged at me so bad. So, God, we thank You. You’ve heard each and every prayer that’s gone forth. Just for this family alone. God, You are faithful, You are kind. We know if You don’t do it, it can’t be done. Stand up in this family. God, every time they want to get frustrated and just feel so broken and want to lash out at each other, they will pray first. And that they will stay there until You speak. That they will trust You in all things and not try to do it themselves. Know that every good and perfect work, every word, every blessing, is coming from You. To seek You without delay, no matter what it looks like. To seek You without delay. And continue to speak against that spirit that wants to tear the families apart. But more importantly, trust God. He hears you; He sees you and He knows. None of this caught Him by surprise. He saw it all. So, trust Him to fix it. In His perfect will and how He sees fit.

Good morning DAB family, this is Saved by Grace from California. I just wanna lift up my sister who called in for prayers for her brother-in-law with the aneurisms and the sister who is agnostic. Family that’s turning to other, other than Jesus, anything else other than Jesus. Heavenly Father God, in the name of Jesus, I just lift my sister up to You, we plead the blood of Jesus over her. I pray for Your strength, Your support, Your love, to just right now, surround her, encompass her, touch her body Father God. Touch her mind, Father God. Remove all the anxiety, worry, and fear, Lord God. Help her, Holy Spirit, remind her of Christ’s love for her. And Father, I pray that You give her words of encouragement, of discernment. I pray that You prepare her sisters heart to receive the words and the love of Jesus, that she would come to know You in a very intimate way. I pray for healing for the sister with the cancer. I pray, Father, for the son, who I know that the seed was planted, Father God, that You would speak to him, that You would open his eyes to the truth of that religion of Islam that he’s following, Father God. That You would open his eyes to see, Father God, and he would recommit and repent and come back to You, Father God. I thank You for what You’re gonna do in this family’s life. I pray that You continue to comfort them and during their times of grief and loss. In ….

Hey everybody, Tony the Narrator here. I just want to join my sister in her call for prayer and say Holy, Holy, Holy Lord. You are truly, truly worthy. Lord, I pray that You will bless Tina. Bless her ability to get a feeding tube. Let her be able to be sustained and to get her sustenance from that. But Lord, mainly, I’m praying that You will bring her a liver so soon. And Lord, I pray that the operation will go well. That there won’t be any rejection from her body. And Lord, that that liver will be able to grow and really take care of Tina in this time. And Lord, You made a promise that You would always give us what we need if we’re truly faithful and we love You. Lord, Tina does Lord. So, I’m asking You, in the name of Jesus, to please rescue the life of Tina and make her body work again. In Jesus Christ’s name, I pray, Amen Lord and Amen. God bless you all. Love all of you. Still here so, I will see you later. Bye bye.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Sunday August 13, 2023 (NIV)

Nehemiah 5:14-7:73

Good and Bad Governors

14 Furthermore, from the day King Artaxerxes(A) appointed me to be their governor in the land of Judah—from the twentieth year until his thirty-second year, twelve years(B)—I and my associates never ate from the food allotted to the governor. 15 The governors(C) who preceded me had heavily burdened the people, taking from them food and wine as well as a pound[a] of silver. Their subordinates also oppressed the people, but because of the fear of God, I didn’t do this.(D) 16 Instead, I devoted myself to the construction of this wall,(E) and all my subordinates were gathered there for the work. We didn’t buy any land.(F)

17 There were 150 Jews and officials, as well as guests from the surrounding nations at my table.(G) 18 Each[b] day, one ox, six choice sheep, and some fowl were prepared for me. An abundance of all kinds of wine was provided every ten days.(H) But I didn’t demand the food allotted to the governor, because the burden on the people was so heavy.

19 Remember me favorably, my God, for all that I have done for this people.(I)

Attempts to Discourage the Builders

When Sanballat, Tobiah, Geshem the Arab, and the rest of our enemies(J) heard that I had rebuilt the wall and that no gap was left in it(K)—though at that time I had not installed the doors in the city gates(L) Sanballat and Geshem(M) sent me a message: “Come, let’s meet together in the villages of[c] the Ono Valley.”(N) They were planning to harm me.

So I sent messengers to them, saying, “I am doing important work and cannot come down. Why should the work cease while I leave it and go down to you?” Four times they sent me the same proposal, and I gave them the same reply.

Sanballat(O) sent me this same message a fifth time by his aide, who had an open letter in his hand. In it was written:

It is reported among the nations—and Geshem[d](P) agrees—that you and the Jews plan to rebel. This is the reason you are building the wall. According to these reports, you are to become their king and have even set up the prophets in Jerusalem to proclaim on your behalf, “There is a king in Judah.”(Q) These rumors will be heard by the king. So come, let’s confer together.

Then I replied to him, “There is nothing to these rumors you are spreading; you are inventing them in your own mind.”(R) For they were all trying to intimidate(S) us, saying, “They will drop their hands from[e] the work,(T) and it will never be finished.”

But now, my God, strengthen my hands.(U)

Attempts to Intimidate Nehemiah

10 I went to the house of Shemaiah son of Delaiah, son of Mehetabel, who was restricted to his house. He said:

Let’s meet at the house of God,
inside the temple.
Let’s shut the temple doors
because they’re coming to kill you.
They’re coming to kill you tonight![f]

11 But I said, “Should a man like me run away? How can someone like me enter the temple and live?(V) I will not go.” 12 I realized that God had not sent him, because of the prophecy he spoke against me. Tobiah and Sanballat(W) had hired him. 13 He was hired, so that I would be intimidated,(X) do as he suggested, sin, and get a bad reputation, in order that they could discredit me.

14 My God, remember(Y) Tobiah and Sanballat for what they have done, and also the prophetess Noadiah(Z) and the other prophets who wanted to intimidate me.

The Wall Completed

15 The wall was completed(AA) in fifty-two days, on the twenty-fifth day of the month Elul.(AB) 16 When all our enemies(AC) heard this, all the surrounding nations were intimidated(AD) and lost their confidence,[g] for they realized that this task had been accomplished by our God.(AE)

17 During those days, the nobles of Judah sent many letters to Tobiah,(AF) and Tobiah’s letters came to them. 18 For many in Judah were bound by oath(AG) to him, since he was a son-in-law of Shecaniah son of Arah, and his son Jehohanan had married the daughter of Meshullam(AH) son of Berechiah. 19 These nobles kept mentioning Tobiah’s good deeds to me, and they reported my words to him. And Tobiah sent letters to intimidate(AI) me.

The Exiles Return

When the wall had been rebuilt and I had the doors installed,(AJ) the gatekeepers,(AK) singers, and Levites were appointed. Then I put my brother Hanani(AL) in charge of Jerusalem,(AM) along with Hananiah,(AN) commander of the fortress,(AO) because he was a faithful man who feared God(AP) more than most. I said to them, “Do not open the gates of Jerusalem until the sun is hot, and let the doors be shut and securely fastened while the guards are on duty. Station the citizens of Jerusalem as guards, some at their posts and some at their homes.”(AQ)

The city was large and spacious, but there were few people in it, and no houses had been built yet.(AR) Then my God put it into my mind(AS) to assemble the nobles, the officials, and the people to be registered by genealogy. I found the genealogical record of those who came back first, and I found the following written in it:(AT)

These are the people of the province who went up among the captive exiles deported by King Nebuchadnezzar(AU) of Babylon. Each of them returned to Jerusalem and Judah, to his own town.(AV) They came with Zerubbabel,(AW) Jeshua,(AX) Nehemiah, Azariah, Raamiah, Nahamani, Mordecai, Bilshan, Mispereth, Bigvai, Nehum, and Baanah.

1 Corinthians 8

Food Offered to Idols

Now about food sacrificed to idols:(A) We know that “we all have knowledge.” Knowledge puffs up,(B) but love(C) builds up. If anyone thinks he knows anything, he does not yet know it as he ought to know it.(D) But if anyone loves God,(E) he is known(F) by him.

About eating food sacrificed to idols, then, we know that “an idol is nothing in the world,”[a] and that “there is no God but one.”(G) For even if there are so-called gods,(H) whether in heaven or on earth—as there are many “gods” and many “lords”— yet for us there is one God, the Father.(I) All things are from him,(J) and we exist for him. And there is one Lord, Jesus Christ. All things are through him, and we exist through him.(K)

However, not everyone has this knowledge. Some have been so used to idolatry up until now that when they eat food sacrificed to an idol, their conscience, being weak, is defiled. Food will not bring us close to God.[b] We are not worse off if we don’t eat, and we are not better if we do eat.(L) But be careful that this right of yours in no way becomes a stumbling block(M) to the weak. 10 For if someone sees you, the one who has knowledge, dining in an idol’s temple, won’t his weak conscience be encouraged[c] to eat food offered to idols? 11 So the weak person, the brother or sister for whom Christ died,(N) is ruined[d](O) by your knowledge.(P) 12 Now when you sin like this against brothers and sisters and wound their weak conscience, you are sinning against Christ. 13 Therefore, if food causes my brother or sister to fall, I will never again eat meat,(Q) so that I won’t cause my brother or sister to fall.

Rejoice in the Lord, you righteous ones;
praise from the upright is beautiful.(A)

Sing a new song to him;(C)
play skillfully on the strings, with a joyful shout.(D)

For the word of the Lord is right,
and all his work is trustworthy.(E)
