2 Samuel 22:1-23:23, Acts 2:1-47, Psalms 122:1-9, Proverbs 16:19-20

Today is the 6th day of June, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I am Brian and it is a joy to be here with you today, a beautiful time here in the rolling hills of Tennessee and I trust a beautiful time wherever you may be. It’s always a beautiful time here around the Global Campfire. Really matter what’s going on in the weather or in our lives. It’s an oasis, a safe place for us. And, so, it’s wonderful to be here with you today as we gather and do what we do which is to take the next step forward. And our next step forward today leads us into some new territory. We finished the book of second Samuel yesterday.

Introduction to first Kings:

And, so, we will begin today the book of first Kings and we’ll…we’ll notice…I mean second Samuel kind of ends in a certain way sort of abruptly and we’ll notice that kind of moving into Kings and continuing the story forward from Samuel with some differences. As with some of the other books in the Bible like first and second Kings first and second Chronicles these were one manuscript at a certain point of time and they were broken up into first and second for ease of finding things in the text. First and second Kings and then first and second Chronicles, which follows cover essentially the same point in history, but it’s observation from two different vantage points. So, the books of Kings that we’re going into now will deal with the Kings. More prominence will be given to the royalty and the way that they interact with the prophetic voices, whereas when we get into Chronicles we’ll be looking at the same point in history from more of a priestly are a common view and have different perspective on the same time period. So, as we move into first Kings we will still be with King David but we will witness the end of his reign, and then some additional family drama as his son Solomon ascends to the throne. And then Solomon will guide Israel into peace and prosperity and abundance as they worship the Lord. Solomon will build the first Temple to God. This is known as the first Temple in Jerusalem. And the worship and praise of God, taken iconic place in the Hebrew culture as this society is being knit together as a nation under a king. And, so, we’ll see an apex, a finest hour, but it’s not without problems. Solomon has problems of his own and we’ll get to those soon enough and we’ll watch things begin to unravel. And then after King Solomon things will get a little bit tricky and will lead to a division. And, so, this kingdom of Israel, these 12 united tribes, they will divide. And the 10 tribes in the north will become the kingdom of Israel and then the southern kingdom will be called Judah. And we’ll get to know prophets, the prophetic voices in this time - Elijah and Elisha. And then…then…then…then…and then we watch it all fall apart and military overthrow comes to the land and exile comes to the land and the people are carried away. But all will not be lost. All is never lost. And that is the hope of the gospel. And, so, as we move through this territory, historically we will find that the Bible continues to reveal many things for us to consider about our own lives. As it has done thus far in the year, that will continue as we continue. And, so, let us continue forward. Today first Kings chapter 1.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word. We thank You for this brand-new territory that we have entered as we move into the book…books of Kings in the Old Testament. And we thank You for the journey that we are on in the book of Acts as we learn our heritage and of Your work among them, and Your work among us that continues until this day. Holy Spirit, come into all that we have read today. Plant it in the soil of our lives. And may we collaborate with You in cultivating the fruit of the Spirit, that there may be a harvest that is bountiful for Your kingdom. We pray this in Jesus’ name. Amen.

2 Samuel 23:24-24:25, Acts 3:1-26, Psalm 123:1-4, Proverbs 16:21-23

Today is the fifth day of June, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian. It is wonderful to be here with you today, as we take the next step forward on our adventure together through the Scriptures this year. And obviously we will pick up where we left off. That leaves us, leads us back into the book of Second Samuel and we’re wrapping things up. We’re learning of all of the elite warriors that were around David and some of the details of the end of David’s life. We will finish the book of Second Samuel today. And so, let’s dive in, Second Samuel chapter 23 verse 24 through 24 verse 25.

Commentary:

Okay, so, we’re just getting going in the Book of Acts, we’re just a few chapters in, but we have spent plenty of time, in fact, our entire year so far, moving through the Gospels, walking alongside Jesus and watching Him and His ministry. And one of the things, of the many things that we notice about Jesus as we move through the Gospels, is that He heals people, He restores people. Blind see, lame can walk, miraculous signs and wonders follow Him where he goes. So today, in the Book of Acts, we see something pretty remarkable. Peter and John are moving through the temple complex, there’s a person there, that is at the beautiful gate, begging. That’s not unusual, that wouldn’t of, that wouldn’t have been unusual then, it’s not particularly unusual now, for there to be people begging all around the old city. So, that’s not unusual, but what happened in the interaction is very unusual. Peter speaks to the man, who’s looking for like, some type of monetary donation. And he tells him, I don’t have any money, but I have something that I will give you. And then he tells him, in the name of Jesus, to get up and walk. And he pulls the man up and the man does get up and walk and jump around. This is the first recorded instance of a miracle after Jesus ascension. Jesus had ascended to the Father, so Jesus was not physically there. And yet, He was totally present in the power of the Holy Spirit. And so, Jesus was physically absent, but the work of Christ was continuing forward, like Jesus said it would and could. And crowds form around this event, as you can imagine. They’re seeing this guy that they see begging all the time, now he’s leaping and jumping around. And so, a crowd is gathered, and Peter asks an important question of the people. And it’s an important question for us, as we enter into the Book of Acts, like we are now. Because we are entering into the story of everything that comes next, what some would call the church era. And we are still in that time, like we’re reading about the Book of Acts, the beginning of all of this, this has been ongoing until today. Peter asks the astounded crowd, what is so surprising about this? Obviously, what’s so surprising about it is that a lame man is leaping and jumping, a miracle has taken place. But Peter’s saying like, this shouldn’t come as a surprise. This is what you saw Jesus doing, the one that was turned over to be killed, the one that you saw die. He has been raised back to life and this is the ongoing revelation of the kingdom He came to announce. What’s so surprising about this? This is everything that He said would happen. This is everything that has been foretold to happen. So, what we see is that Jesus ascended to the Father, the Holy Spirit came back to lead and guide, and Jesus has told them, told them the stuff you see me do, you can do these things, you can do greater these things, greater than these things because I am going to the Father. And so, Peter’s question, what is so surprising about this is certainly a question for the crowds that were there in the moment. But it’s also a question for us, what if this is all true? What if our lives were shaped around the enormous, unstoppable power of Christ within us, and what if when we read the Book of Acts, we understand that these are examples and maybe the wholeness that Jesus said He came to bring, the healing of the broken heart, the setting of the captive free, the restoring of sight to the blind, the restoring of strength to the lame. What if this is available to us? What if this is the point, putting what is broken, back together. Let’s spend some time today thinking about what wholeness would look like in our lives. Let’s think about what is broken and then let’s think about the power of God and then let’s think about Peter asking, what is so surprising about this. Maybe healing and restoration are available for us. And so, let’s give it some thought today. Let’s just dream about what it might look like today. And then invite Jesus into that.

Prayer:

And Jesus, we confess, we spend all of our lives trying to organize and order things in such a way that we can feel not broken, we can feel not behind. And so, we spend most of our energy in these efforts, only to find that the second we get something fixed, something else is broken and it’s a never-ending cycle. But what if we stepped back and realized that we aren’t the ones that can make ourselves whole. Only You can and You are not withholding from us. So, what if we turned our affection and our energy toward You and allowed You to heal what is broken in us, and then, we too, along with Peter, can say what’s so surprising about this? Of course, He would come for us. Of course, He loves us. Of course, He’s here to heal the brokenhearted and set us free. So, come into this Holy Spirit, as we think about the different areas that we believe will never be fixed. Maybe what we need to do is acknowledge that we can’t fix it and we can’t do it. And so, we surrender to You, come and invade our space, filling us with Your presence. We ask in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Prayer and Encouragements:

Hi, neighbors, it’s Lisa the Encourager. I was just calling in today, to say hello and hope you all are having a good day. And I hope that you are blessed, and I just wanted to share something with you that was actually read in 1st Samuel. I know we’re in 2nd Samuel now. But I just wanted to share it with you because it really stood out to me. And it was the story about Eli and Samuel and Samuel was in the temple and he was a little boy. And God was calling out to him. And Eli was helping him understand it was God and not him. And he was also telling him what to say. And he, when he went back and he realized it was God, he said to God, he said, speak your servant is listening. And I just think those words are so profound. Speak, your servant is listening. And it was just like a challenge in my mind that said, you know, I should be ending my prayers that way or beginning my prayers that way. When I’m talking to God and you know, we’re dealing with different things in life. And just you know, addressing God that you know, we’re His servants and that we’re listening to what He wants to share with us. What He wants to lay on our hearts. You know we, obviously, want to ask for things and give Him all of our burdens, as we should. But this is just a good reminder to listen. And I thought it was a beautiful way that Eli taught Samuel to you know, be the servant and to listen to our God.

Good morning, DABers. This is God’s Chosen from Georgia. It’s the beginning of another new month. And I want to thank God for all of us. Thank You God for Your grace that You have extended to us to enter into this new month of June. We thank You Lord, for Your unwavering provision for all of us. We trust that Your peace will watch over us as we step into this new month. We thank You Lord that, during this month of June, all of us will rely on the riches of Your love and Your grace to provide for us in the physical, in our emotional and in our spiritual well-being. We thank You Lord, that You will help us to walk according to Your will. Father, forgive us when we error or stray. Help us Lord, to stay in Your truth and be the light that shines to the world. We ask You once again Lord Jesus, to guide our footsteps throughout this month of June. Help us Lord, God Almighty, to keep our eyes on You. Grant us grace to continually acknowledge and thank You for all the blessings that You have poured upon us. Let us be mindful of all those who are around us, who are suffering and let us be a kind person. Show kindness to each and every one of them. We pray for those who are sick amongst us. We pray for all those who are waiting upon You, those whose hearts have been torn. Just by the diagnosis they have received. We pray for restoration. We pray for healing. We pray in the name of Jesus, Lord, that You will continue to guide us throughout this month. Help us Lord, to keep our eyes on You, to trust You. Help us to live by Proverbs 3:5 and 6. We all love You Jesus. And we thank You. For we pray in Jesus name.

Hey, Daily Audio Bible Family. I’m gonna call myself Just John. It’s what my mentor called me, some years ago. Anyway, the reason for the prayer request is for the last year and a half, I have really been struggling with finding work that supports me and treats me well. I’m currently in a job now, this is week 5. I’m hoping that they’re gonna make it so I can be supported and have the basic tools needed to do my job properly. I’m going in day-by-day hoping for the best. And the powers that be, know what I need, and we’ll see what happens. So, my request is also direction for what kind of work to do. I can continue to do the same type of work. I find fulfillment in it, but I also have a desire to start a small business. So, that’s my request. I feel good. I’m not down even though in these past 4 weeks I had sometimes where I was really upset and angry. But I know God’s gonna work it out. I appreciate your prayers. Thank you for listening.

Good morning, Daily Audio Bible Family. This is Beloved in Arizona. I am calling to ask for prayer for family that just lost their father and grandfather. There was a, there’s a man in Prescot Valley who, he was a good Christian man, youth pastor, beloved by the whole community. And he was found murdered in his home just Monday night. He’s got three children: Justin, Courtney and Sarah, they’re adults. And Courtney just, a few months ago, lost her 8-month-old baby. I’m not sure the cause. So, Courtney has lost her baby and her father. And Justin and Sarah have lost their father. Please pray for them.

Hey, fellow DABers. This is Shepherding Outside of Seattle. As a pastor, I’m probably like a lot of pastors, facing a lot of decisions to make to go left or right, to go up or down, backwards/forwards, all those kinds of things. And there’s just a lot of things that are pressing in and it seems like, when it rains, it pours. And I really appreciate your prayers for wisdom for me, to have wisdom in decisions that I have to make. I pray for God to open doors and to provide, where I can’t see provision at the moment. And, yeah, I could really use your help in that. And yeah, I would just encourage you to pray for your pastors. Some people think that pastors never struggle. But I could really use your help. So, appreciate your prayers for just sustaining my enthusiasm, my anticipation of what God’s gonna do. And He has given me no reasons whatsoever to doubt Him. It’s just, sometimes, it’s a struggle, to hold on and wait. And so, I’m trying to do that. Hold on and wait for His provision, His answers. And in the meantime, do what I need to do and wait patiently and be wise. So, thank you for your prayers. It’s Shepherding Outside Seattle.

There were thirty-seven in all.

David’s Military Census

24 The Lord’s anger burned against Israel again, and he stirred up David against them to say, “Go, count the people of Israel and Judah.”(E)

So the king said to Joab, the commander of his army, “Go through all the tribes of Israel from Dan to Beer-sheba and register the troops so I can know their number.”(F)

Joab replied to the king, “May the Lord your God multiply the troops a hundred times more than they are(G)—while my lord the king looks on! But why does my lord the king want to do this?”

Yet the king’s order prevailed over Joab and the commanders of the army. So Joab and the commanders of the army left the king’s presence to register the troops of Israel.

They crossed the Jordan and camped in Aroer,(H) south of the town in the middle of the valley, and then proceeded toward Gad and Jazer. They went to Gilead and to the land of the Hittites[c] and continued on to Dan-jaan and around to Sidon. They went to the fortress of Tyre and all the cities of the Hivites and Canaanites. Afterward, they went to the Negev of Judah at Beer-sheba.

When they had gone through the whole land, they returned to Jerusalem at the end of nine months and twenty days. Joab gave the king the total of the registration of the troops. There were eight hundred thousand valiant armed men[d] from Israel and five hundred thousand men from Judah.(I)

10 David’s conscience troubled him(J) after he had taken a census of the troops. He said to the Lord, “I have sinned greatly in what I’ve done. Now, Lord, because I’ve been very foolish,(K) please take away your servant’s guilt.”

David’s Punishment

11 When David got up in the morning, the word of the Lord had come to the prophet Gad,(L) David’s seer:(M) 12 “Go and say to David, ‘This is what the Lord says: I am offering you three choices. Choose one of them, and I will do it to you.’”

13 So Gad went to David, told him the choices, and asked him, “Do you want three[e] years of famine to come on your land, to flee from your foes three months while they pursue you, or to have a plague in your land three days? Now, consider carefully[f] what answer I should take back to the one who sent me.”

14 David answered Gad, “I have great anxiety. Please, let us fall into the Lord’s hands because his mercies are great,(N) but don’t let me fall into human hands.”

15 So the Lord sent a plague on Israel from that morning until the appointed time, and from Dan to Beer-sheba seventy thousand men died. 16 Then the angel extended his hand toward Jerusalem to destroy it,(O) but the Lord relented concerning the destruction(P) and said to the angel who was destroying(Q) the people, “Enough, withdraw your hand now!” The angel of the Lord was then at the threshing floor of Araunah[g] the Jebusite.(R)

17 When David saw the angel striking the people, he said to the Lord, “Look, I am the one who has sinned; I am the one[h] who has done wrong. But these sheep, what have they done? Please, let your hand be against me and my father’s family.”

David’s Altar

18 Gad came to David that day and said to him, “Go up and set up an altar to the Lord on the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.” 19 David went up in obedience to Gad’s command, just as the Lord had commanded. 20 Araunah looked down and saw the king and his servants coming toward him, so he went out and paid homage to the king with his face to the ground.

21 Araunah said, “Why has my lord the king come to his servant?”

David replied, “To buy the threshing floor from you in order to build an altar to the Lord, so the plague on the people may be halted.”(S)

22 Araunah said to David, “My lord the king may take whatever he wants[i] and offer it. Here are the oxen for a burnt offering and the threshing sledges and ox yokes for the wood.(T) 23 Your Majesty, Araunah gives everything here to the king.” Then he said to the king, “May the Lord your God accept you.”

24 The king answered Araunah, “No, I insist on buying it from you for a price, for I will not offer to the Lord my God burnt offerings that cost me nothing.” David bought the threshing floor and the oxen for twenty ounces[j] of silver. 25 He built an altar to the Lord there and offered burnt offerings and fellowship offerings. Then the Lord was receptive to prayer for the land,(U) and the plague on Israel ended.

Acts 3

Healing of a Lame Man

Now Peter and John were going up to the temple for the time of prayer(A) at three in the afternoon.[a] A man who was lame from birth was being carried there. He was placed each day at the temple gate called Beautiful, so that he could beg from those entering the temple.(B) When he saw Peter and John about to enter the temple, he asked for money. Peter, along with John, looked straight at him and said, “Look at us.” So he turned to them, expecting to get something from them. But Peter said, “I don’t have silver or gold, but what I do have, I give you: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, get up and walk!” (C) Then, taking him by the right hand he raised him up, and at once his feet and ankles became strong. So he jumped up and started to walk, and he entered the temple with them—walking, leaping, and praising God.(D) All the people saw him walking and praising God, 10 and they recognized that he was the one who used to sit and beg at the Beautiful Gate of the temple. So they were filled with awe and astonishment at what had happened to him.(E)

Preaching in Solomon’s Colonnade

11 While he[b] was holding on to Peter and John, all the people, utterly astonished, ran toward them in what is called Solomon’s Colonnade.(F) 12 When Peter saw this, he addressed the people: “Fellow Israelites, why are you amazed at this? Why do you stare at us, as though we had made him walk by our own power or godliness? 13 The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the God of our ancestors,(G) has glorified his servant Jesus, whom you handed over and denied before Pilate,(H) though he had decided to release him. 14 You denied the Holy and Righteous One(I) and asked to have a murderer released to you.(J) 15 You killed the source[c] of life, whom God raised from the dead; we are witnesses of this.(K) 16 By faith in his name, his name has made this man strong, whom you see and know. So the faith that comes through Jesus has given him this perfect health in front of all of you.

17 “And now, brothers and sisters, I know that you acted in ignorance, just as your leaders also did.(L) 18 In this way God fulfilled what he had predicted through all the prophets—that his Messiah would suffer.(M) 19 Therefore repent(N) and turn back, so that your sins may be wiped out,(O) 20 that seasons of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, and that he may send Jesus, who has been appointed(P) for you as the Messiah. 21 Heaven must receive him until the time of the restoration of all things, which God spoke about through his holy prophets from the beginning.(Q) 22 Moses said:[d] The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your brothers. You must listen to everything he tells you. 23 And everyone who does not listen to that prophet will be completely cut off from the people.[e](R)

24 “In addition, all the prophets who have spoken, from Samuel and those after him, have also foretold these days. 25 You are the sons[f] of the prophets and of the covenant that God made with your ancestors, saying to Abraham, And all the families of the earth will be blessed through your offspring.[g](S) 26 God raised up his servant[h] and sent him first to you to bless you by turning each of you from your evil ways.”(T)

so our eyes are on the Lord our God

It’s not behind us. It’s in front of us. And, so, our choices will make up what this week looks like. And, so, we are doing the right thing by immersing ourselves in the Scriptures as they inform those choices and those words and those thoughts that we write upon this week with the story of our lives. And, so, it is wonderful to be together as we gather yet again around the Global Campfire and move forward. And moving forward leads us back to where we left off and that leads us back into the book of second Samuel. And today we will read second Samuel chapter 22 verse 1 through 23 verse 23 and we will read from the New International Version this week.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word.  We thank You for this brand-new week and we get to immerse ourselves in the Scriptures, allowing You to continue the work of transforming us, sanctifying us, restoring us, putting it back together, bringing shalom, making is whole again. Thank You for Your continued work in restoring us. We love You and we are excited as we move into the book of Acts into this new territory for what You will reveal to us. And as we approach the ending of second Samuel and continue forward in that story, we are eager for all that You have to show us. And from the psalms today we do indeed pray for the peace of Jerusalem, and those who love You be secure. May there be peace within Your walls and security within Your citadels. For the sake of our family and friends, we will say, peace be within You. For the sake of the house of the Lord our God, we will seek Your prosperity. We pray these things Jesus in Your mighty and precious name. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

2 Samuel 22:1-23:23

David’s Song of Thanksgiving

22 David spoke the words of this song to the Lord on the day the Lord rescued him from the grasp of all his enemies and from the grasp of Saul. He said:(A)

The Lord is my rock, my fortress,(B) and my deliverer,
my God,[a] my rock where I seek refuge.
My shield, the horn of my salvation,(C) my stronghold,(D) my refuge,(E)
and my Savior, you save me from violence.
I called to the Lord, who is worthy of praise,(F)
and I was saved from my enemies.
For the waves of death engulfed me;(G)
the torrents of destruction terrified me.
The ropes of Sheol entangled me;
the snares of death confronted me.(H)

I called to the Lord in my distress;
I called to my God.(I)
From his temple he heard my voice,
and my cry for help reached his ears.
Then the earth shook and quaked;
the foundations of the heavens[b] trembled;(J)
they shook because he burned with anger.(K)
Smoke rose from his nostrils,
and consuming fire came from his mouth;
coals were set ablaze by it.[c]
10 He bent the heavens and came down,(L)
total darkness beneath his feet.
11 He rode on a cherub and flew,
soaring[d] on the wings of the wind.
12 He made darkness a canopy around him,
a gathering[e] of water and thick clouds.(M)
13 From the radiance of his presence,
blazing coals were ignited.
14 The Lord thundered from heaven;
the Most High made his voice heard.(N)
15 He shot arrows and scattered them;(O)
he hurled lightning bolts and routed them.(P)
16 The depths of the sea became visible,
the foundations of the world were exposed
at the rebuke of the Lord,
at the blast of the breath(Q) of his nostrils.(R)

17 He reached down from on high
and took hold of me;
he pulled me out of deep water.(S)
18 He rescued me from my powerful enemy
and from those who hated me,
for they were too strong for me.
19 They confronted me in the day of my calamity,
but the Lord was my support.
20 He brought me out to a spacious place;(T)
he rescued me because he delighted in me.

21 The Lord rewarded me
according to my righteousness;(U)
he repaid me
according to the cleanness of my hands.(V)
22 For I have kept the ways of the Lord(W)
and have not turned from my God to wickedness.
23 Indeed, I let all his ordinances(X) guide me[f]
and have not disregarded his statutes.
24 I was blameless before him
and kept myself from my iniquity.
25 So the Lord repaid me
according to my righteousness,
according to my cleanness[g] in his sight.

26 With the faithful
you prove yourself faithful,
with the blameless
you prove yourself blameless,
27 with the pure
you prove yourself pure,
but with the crooked
you prove yourself shrewd.
28 You rescue an oppressed people,(Y)
but your eyes are set against the proud—
you humble them.(Z)
29 Lord, you are my lamp;
the Lord illuminates my darkness.(AA)
30 With you I can attack a barricade,[h]
and with my God I can leap over a wall.(AB)
31 God—his way is perfect;(AC)
the word of the Lord is pure.(AD)
He is a shield to all who take refuge in him.

32 For who is God besides the Lord?
And who is a rock? Only our God.
33 God is my strong refuge;[i]
he makes my way perfect.[j]
34 He makes my feet like the feet of a deer
and sets me securely on the[k] heights.[l]
35 He trains my hands for war;(AE)
my arms can bend a bow of bronze.
36 You have given me the shield of your salvation;(AF)
your help[m] exalts me.
37 You make a spacious place beneath me for my steps,
and my ankles do not give way.
38 I pursue my enemies and destroy them;
I do not turn back until they are wiped out.
39 I wipe them out and crush them,
and they do not rise;
they fall beneath my feet.
40 You have clothed me with strength for battle;
you subdue my adversaries beneath me.(AG)
41 You have made my enemies retreat before me;[n]
I annihilate those who hate me.
42 They look, but there is no one to save them—
they look to the Lord, but he does not answer them.(AH)
43 I pulverize them like dust of the earth;
I crush them and trample them like mud in the streets.(AI)

44 You have freed me from the feuds among my people;(AJ)
you have preserved me as head of nations;
a people I had not known serve me.(AK)
45 Foreigners submit to me cringing;
as soon as they hear, they obey me.
46 Foreigners lose heart
and come trembling from their fortifications.(AL)

47 The Lord lives—blessed be my rock!
God, the rock of my salvation,(AM) is exalted.
48 God—he grants me vengeance
and casts down peoples under me.(AN)
49 He frees me from my enemies.
You exalt me above my adversaries;
you rescue me from violent men.(AO)

50 Therefore I will give thanks to you among the nations, Lord;
I will sing praises about your name.(AP)
51 He is a tower of salvation for[o] his king;
he shows loyalty to his anointed,
to David and his descendants forever.(AQ)

David’s Last Words

23 These are the last words of David:

The declaration of David son of Jesse,(AR)
the declaration of the man raised on high,[p]
the one anointed by the God of Jacob.(AS)
This is the most delightful of Israel’s songs.
The Spirit of the Lord spoke through me,
his word was on my tongue.(AT)
The God of Israel spoke;
the Rock of Israel said to me,
“The one who rules the people with justice,
who rules in the fear of God,(AU)
is like the morning light when the sun rises
on a cloudless morning,
the glisten of rain on sprouting grass.”

Is it not true my house is with God?
For he has established a permanent covenant(AV) with me,
ordered and secured in every detail.(AW)
Will he not bring about
my whole salvation and my every desire?
But all the wicked are like thorns raked aside;
they can never be picked up by hand.
The man who touches them
must be armed with iron and the shaft of a spear.
They will be completely burned up on the spot.

Exploits of David’s Warriors

These are the names of David’s warriors:(AX)

Josheb-basshebeth the Tahchemonite was chief of the officers.[q] He wielded his spear[r] against eight hundred men that he killed at one time.

After him, Eleazar son of Dodo son of an Ahohite was among the three warriors with David when they defied the Philistines. The men of Israel retreated in the place they had gathered for battle, 10 but Eleazar stood his ground and attacked the Philistines until his hand was tired and stuck to his sword. The Lord brought about a great victory that day. Then the troops came back to him, but only to plunder the dead.

11 After him was Shammah son of Agee the Hararite. The Philistines had assembled in formation where there was a field full of lentils. The troops fled from the Philistines, 12 but Shammah took his stand in the middle of the field, defended it, and struck down the Philistines. So the Lord brought about a great victory.

13 Three of the thirty leading warriors went down at harvest time and came to David at the cave of Adullam,(AY) while a company of Philistines was camping in Rephaim Valley. 14 At that time David was in the stronghold,(AZ) and a Philistine garrison was at Bethlehem. 15 David was extremely thirsty[s] and said, “If only someone would bring me water to drink from the well at the city gate of Bethlehem!” 16 So three of the warriors broke through the Philistine camp and drew water from the well at the gate of Bethlehem. They brought it back to David, but he refused to drink it. Instead, he poured it out to the Lord. 17 David said, “Lord, I would never do such a thing! Is this not the blood of men who risked their lives?” So he refused to drink it. Such were the exploits of the three warriors.

18 Abishai, Joab’s brother and son of Zeruiah,(BA) was leader of the Three.[t] He wielded his spear against three hundred men and killed them, gaining a reputation among the Three. 19 Was he not more honored than the Three? He became their commander even though he did not become one of the Three.(BB)

20 Benaiah son of Jehoiada(BC) was the son of a brave man from Kabzeel, a man of many exploits. Benaiah killed two sons[u] of Ariel[v] of Moab, and he went down into a pit on a snowy day and killed a lion. 21 He also killed an Egyptian, an impressive man. Even though the Egyptian had a spear in his hand, Benaiah went down to him with a staff, snatched the spear out of the Egyptian’s hand, and then killed him with his own spear. 22 These were the exploits of Benaiah son of Jehoiada, who had a reputation among the three warriors. 23 He was the most honored of the Thirty, but he did not become one of the Three. David put him in charge of his bodyguard.

Acts 2

Pentecost

When the day of Pentecost had arrived, they were all together in one place.(A) Suddenly a sound like that of a violent rushing wind(B) came from heaven, and it filled the whole house where they were staying.(C) They saw tongues like flames of fire that separated and rested on each one of them. Then they were all filled(D) with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues,[a] as the Spirit enabled them.(E)

Now there were Jews staying in Jerusalem, devout people from every nation(F) under heaven. When this sound occurred, a crowd came together and was confused because each one heard them speaking in his own language. They were astounded and amazed, saying,[b] “Look, aren’t all these who are speaking Galileans?(G) How is it that each of us can hear them in our own native language? Parthians, Medes, Elamites; those who live in Mesopotamia, in Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,(H) 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome (both Jews and converts),(I) 11 Cretans and Arabs—we hear them declaring the magnificent acts of God in our own tongues.” 12 They were all astounded and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” 13 But some sneered and said, “They’re drunk on new wine.”(J)

Peter’s Sermon

14 Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice, and proclaimed to them, “Fellow Jews and all you residents of Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and pay attention to my words. 15 For these people are not drunk, as you suppose, since it’s only nine in the morning.[c] 16 On the contrary, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel:

17 And it will be in the last days, says God,
that I will pour out my Spirit on all people;
then your sons and your daughters will prophesy,
your young men will see visions,
and your old men will dream dreams.(K)
18 I will even pour out my Spirit
on my servants in those days, both men and women
and they will prophesy.(L)
19 I will display wonders in the heaven above
and signs on the earth below:
blood and fire and a cloud of smoke.
20 The sun will be turned to darkness
and the moon to blood(M)
before the great and glorious day of the Lord(N) comes.
21 Then everyone who calls
on the name of the Lord will be saved.[d](O)

22 “Fellow Israelites, listen to these words: This Jesus of Nazareth was a man attested to you by God with miracles, wonders, and signs that God did among you through him, just as you yourselves know.(P) 23 Though he was delivered up according to God’s determined plan and foreknowledge, you used[e] lawless people to nail him to a cross and kill him.(Q) 24 God raised him up, ending the pains of death,(R) because it was not possible for him to be held by death. 25 For David says of him:

I saw the Lord ever before me;
because he is at my right hand,
I will not be shaken.
26 Therefore my heart is glad
and my tongue rejoices.
Moreover, my flesh will rest in hope,
27 because you will not abandon me in Hades
or allow your holy one to see decay.(S)
28 You have revealed the paths of life to me;
you will fill me with gladness
in your presence.[f](T)

29 “Brothers and sisters, I can confidently speak to you about the patriarch David: He is both dead and buried, and his tomb is with us to this day.(U) 30 Since he was a prophet, he knew that God had sworn an oath to him to seat one of his descendants[g] on his throne.(V) 31 Seeing what was to come, he spoke concerning the resurrection of the Messiah: He[h] was not abandoned in Hades, and his flesh did not experience decay.[i](W)

32 “God has raised(X) this Jesus; we are all witnesses of this. 33 Therefore, since he has been exalted to the right hand of God(Y) and has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit,(Z) he has poured out(AA) what you both see and hear. 34 For it was not David who ascended into the heavens, but he himself says:

The Lord declared to my Lord,
‘Sit at my right hand
35 until I make your enemies your footstool.’[j](AB)

36 “Therefore let all the house of Israel know with certainty that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah.”(AC)

Call to Repentance

37 When they heard this, they were pierced to the heart and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what should we do?” (AD)

38 Peter replied, “Repent(AE) and be baptized,(AF) each of you, in the name(AG) of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is for you and for your children, and for all who are far off,(AH) as many as the Lord our God will call.” 40 With many other words he testified and strongly urged them, saying, “Be saved from this corrupt[k] generation!” (AI) 41 So those who accepted his message were baptized, and that day about three thousand people were added to them.

A Generous and Growing Church

42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching,(AJ) to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread, and to prayer.(AK)

43 Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and signs were being performed through the apostles.(AL) 44 Now all the believers were together and held all things in common.(AM) 45 They sold their possessions and property and distributed the proceeds to all, as any had need. 46 Every day they devoted themselves to meeting together in the temple, and broke bread from house to house. They ate their food with joyful and sincere hearts,(AN) 47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. Every day the Lord added to their number[l] those who were being saved.(AO)

A Prayer for Jerusalem

A song of ascents. Of David.

I rejoiced with those who said to me,
“Let’s go to the house of the Lord.”(A)
Our feet were standing
within your gates, Jerusalem(B)

Jerusalem, built as a city should be,
solidly united,(C)
where the tribes, the Lord’s tribes, go up
to give thanks to the name of the Lord.(D)
(This is an ordinance for Israel.(E))
There, thrones for judgment are placed,
thrones of the house of David.(F)

Pray for the well-being[a] of Jerusalem:
“May those who love you be secure;(G)
may there be peace within your walls,
security within your fortresses.”(H)
Because of my brothers and friends,
I will say, “May peace be in you.”[b](I)
Because of the house of the Lord our God,
I will pursue your prosperity.(J)

2 Samuel 20:14-21:22, Acts 1:1-26, Psalm 121:1-8, Proverbs 16:18

Today is the third day of June, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian and it is wonderful to be here with you today, as we gather, yet again, and take the next step forward, each and every day, a step forward leads us through the Scriptures. So, we have been working our way through the book of Second Samuel and the life and reign of King David. The…the ups and downs, the deep valleys, the things that have happened, his own son wanting to overthrow him and take it, take the kingdom over and kill his father. Absalom, of course, has died and we are continuing forward in the drama. Today, second Samuel chapter 20 verse 14 through 21 verse 22.

Introduction to the Book of Acts:

Okay, so, yesterday, we concluded the book of John, the Gospel of John, which concluded the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. And so, we finished the territory in the New Testament, known as the Gospels, which brings us today to some brand-new territory and the beginning of a new era in the New Testament. The Book of Acts, that we’re stepping into today is kind of the story of what happens next. What happened after Jesus ascended to the Father. And Acts is part of a two-volume set, that might some a little confusing but the author of the Gospel of Luke, most scholars agree, is also the author of the Book of Acts. And so, Luke is the Gospel that tells about the story of Jesus life. And then Acts, is the story of what comes after: Luke, Acts. So, in some ways we can call this Second Luke. But as we dive in, we will see that the Book of Acts is leading us forward in the narrative and we will meet back up with somebody that we know pretty well, the Apostle Peter. And the Book of Acts will tell us of Peter’s transformation and his ministry. And then we will meet this Pharisee, a very devout, zealous Pharisee, who is desiring to do everything in his power and getting authorization to do everything in his power, to literally stamp out the memory of Jesus, to wipe his name from the earth. And then this Pharisee meets Jesus and it transforms his life in a radical way, so radical that it’s still transforming the world, until this day. This Pharisee, this zealous man, was named Saul and he would become the Apostle Paul. And so, we’ll spend latter part of the Book of Acts getting to know Paul and we’ll spend quite a bit of the rest of the time that we have together this year going through the Scriptures, alongside of Paul. His letters are the earliest documents that are preserved from the Christian era, and his letters make up the bulk of the rest of the New Testament. Not entirely, but good majority. And so, we’re…we’re moving into the territory now, we’re getting to know Paul and we’re gonna get to know him really well. We will also notice, in the Book of Acts, that there is a force, a power that fuels everything that comes next, and this is the Holy Spirit that Jesus had promised. And we’ll see nothing that happened next, nothing in the early church would’ve happened without the Spirit, the comfort, the Spirit of truth. And we should remember this while we’re reading through the Book of Acts because we are in the same era and it is the same Holy Spirit that is inviting us into collaboration on the same mission that we read about as we read in the Book of Acts. We’re just a bit later in the story. So we’re opening up the Book of Acts, but we’re also kind of turning the page into some new territory and may we drink deeply, as we see the formation of the church, as we learn of our spiritual ancestors, and at the Holy Spirit is working now, as then. And so, we begin. Acts chapter 1.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word. And we thank You for bringing us through another week together in Your word and even as we close this week and open a new chapter, open a new book in the Book of Acts, we look forward with great anticipation for all that we will learn and all that You will show us, as we learn and grow together and as…as these seeds are planted in the soil of our lives, may they be a harvest that is bountiful for Your kingdom. We pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Prayer and Encouragements:

Good day, my Daily Audio Bible Family. This is Aussie James. Just asking for some prayers. My wife and I are about to make our first trip back to Japan since COVID hit the world. And just asking for prayer for journey mercies. We are gonna be spending some time with her two brothers up there. And they still haven’t yet received Christ and we want to really be a good witness and testimony to him, to them. And you know, my wife was the first Christian in her family. And praise the Lord, both her parents received Christ before they passed away. And a couple of aunties and one of her uncles have received Christ. God has been doing a big work in her family. But the brothers are still yet to make that commitment. And we just pray that when we go up there, we’ll be a good witness to them. And also, we’ll be sensitive to where God might lead us next. Cause we feel we might move back to Japan in a couple years’ time. But we’re not sure exactly where God’s gonna have us. So, we’re gonna fluff out a few things while we’re out there. So, please, pray for us while we’re out there. Love you, Daily Audio Bible Family. Aussie James, signing out.

Hi, Daily Audio Bible Family, this is Shellie in Central California. I’m a few days behind. And I’d love to catch up and hear what other prayer requests have come in and what other things have developed. But I just feel like I should stop, while I’m driving, and call now in response to what I heard. So, a couple days back, weeks back, I heard a prayer request for Eve. And she had multiple miscarriages and a baby that was born and died. And my heart is just torn for her. We’ve had a miscarriage in our family story too. And so, I’ve just been praying for Eve, all along. And please, keep praying for her with me. And today, I was, I heard the prayer request from the mom with Our Little Girl and my heart is so much wrapped up in what you were saying too. I have a teenager dealing with mental health things and sometimes she sees things too. And it is super, super scary. And even though we know God is big and can come in the middle of all of this, or whatever it is or what’s causing it, be it spiritual or physiological or whatever. It’s just, it’s just hard and scary. And so, I pray along with you, and I will definitely be remembering her and looking forward to hearing what happens in your story as well. Love you guys and have lots to share of our own. And I was just gonna say …

Hello DABers, first time caller. This is Heart Broken in the state of California. I have a situation that needs to be lifted up in prayer. And it’s regarding a roommate that’s been with us for a very long, long time. Her name is Alice. My husband wants her out and he wanted to kick her out on Tuesday. But then she came, and she pleaded with me to see about staying an extra 30 days, so that she can get herself situated. It’s just that she’s had more than enough time and my husband already told her last month that she needed to go. This is troubling because, what’s even more heartbreaking is that she has a son who wants nothing to do with her. And this is even more heartbreaking for me. So, I feel really bad about this. Please pray for my roommate Alice. That a door will open for her, and she can get a place very quickly. And that she doesn’t have to worry about being homeless. I’m at a loss for words. I don’t know how to go about this. You are my best resource at the moment. I already called a friend, and I left her a message to help pray for this poor woman. She doesn’t really have any family. And just pray.

Hello DAB Family and my special friend Carol, you know who you are, who introduced me to DAB. I am six months post-op, losing an eye, a long list of injuries, including tibia, fibia, shattered ankle, broken nose, fractured rib from a car accident, getting hit by a truck. I just wanna say praise God, thank You. He got me this far. I’m walking again, I’ve got my prosthetic eye and God is good. I pray for everyone here. I would like to also ask for prayer for my cousin, my Godparents, my God-mom with dementia, my Godfather just got diagnosed today with cancer. He keeps falling, he’s 86. He’s got heart issues. My cousin is the only person that is taking care of them. My brother and sister have stepped up. I am 2000 miles away. It’s just a lot for my cousin, he recently retired and now he’s full-time taking care of mom and dad. And I’m just asking for prayer for him to come to the Lord. Leave everything on the doorstep. He will handle everything. I know without a doubt, He is in my life and re-directing my path to something wonderful. Thank you, DAB, thank you, everyone, thank you, Carol, if you hear this. I love you. Everyone stay strong. Special prayers have gone out for Junk-to-Treasure.

2 Samuel 20:14-21:22

14 Sheba passed through all the tribes of Israel to Abel of Beth-maacah. All the Berites[a] came together and followed him. 15 Joab’s troops came and besieged Sheba in Abel of Beth-maacah. They built a siege ramp(A) against the outer wall of the city. While all the troops with Joab were battering the wall to make it collapse, 16 a wise woman called out from the city, “Listen! Listen! Please tell Joab to come here and let me speak with him.”

17 When he had come near her, the woman asked, “Are you Joab?”

“I am,” he replied.

“Listen to the words of your servant,” she said to him.

He answered, “I’m listening.”

18 She said, “In the past they used to say, ‘Seek counsel in Abel,’ and that’s how they settled disputes. 19 I am one of the peaceful and faithful in Israel, but you’re trying to destroy a city that is like a mother in Israel. Why would you devour the Lord’s inheritance?”

20 Joab protested: “Never! I would never devour or demolish! 21 That is not the case. There is a man named Sheba son of Bichri, from the hill country of Ephraim, who has rebelled against King David. Deliver this one man, and I will withdraw from the city.”

The woman replied to Joab, “Watch! His head will be thrown over the wall to you.” 22 The woman went to all the people with her wise counsel,(B) and they cut off the head of Sheba son of Bichri and threw it to Joab. So he blew the ram’s horn, and they dispersed from the city, each to his own tent. Joab returned to the king in Jerusalem.

23 Joab commanded the whole army of Israel;(C)

Benaiah son of Jehoiada was over the Cherethites and Pelethites;

24 Adoram[b] was over forced labor;(D)

Jehoshaphat son of Ahilud was court historian;

25 Sheva was court secretary;

Zadok and Abiathar were priests;

26 and in addition, Ira the Jairite was David’s priest.

Justice for the Gibeonites

21 During David’s reign there was a famine for three successive years, so David inquired[c] of the Lord. The Lord answered, “It is due to Saul and to his bloody family, because he killed the Gibeonites.”

The Gibeonites were not Israelites but rather a remnant of the Amorites. The Israelites had taken an oath concerning them,(E) but Saul had tried to kill them in his zeal for the Israelites and Judah. So David summoned the Gibeonites and spoke to them. He asked the Gibeonites, “What should I do for you? How can I make atonement so that you will bring a blessing on[d] the Lord’s inheritance?”

The Gibeonites said to him, “We are not asking for silver and gold from Saul or his family,(F) and we cannot put anyone to death in Israel.”(G)

“Whatever you say, I will do for you,” he said.

They replied to the king, “As for the man who annihilated us and plotted to destroy us so we would not exist within the whole territory of Israel, let seven of his male descendants be handed over to us so we may hang[e] them in the presence of the Lord(H) at Gibeah of Saul,(I) the Lord’s chosen.”(J)

The king answered, “I will hand them over.”

David spared Mephibosheth, the son of Saul’s son Jonathan, because of the oath of the Lord that was between David and Jonathan, Saul’s son.(K) But the king took Armoni and Mephibosheth, who were the two sons whom Rizpah(L) daughter of Aiah had borne to Saul, and the five sons whom Merab[f](M) daughter of Saul had borne to Adriel son of Barzillai the Meholathite and handed them over to the Gibeonites. They hanged[g] them on the hill in the presence of the Lord; the seven of them died together. They were executed in the first days of the harvest at the beginning of the barley harvest.[h]

The Burial of Saul’s Family

10 Rizpah, Aiah’s daughter, took sackcloth and spread it out for herself on the rock from the beginning of the harvest[i] until the rain poured down from heaven on the bodies. She kept the birds of the sky from them by day and the wild animals by night.

11 When it was reported to David what Saul’s concubine Rizpah daughter of Aiah had done, 12 he went and got the bones of Saul and his son Jonathan from the citizens of Jabesh-gilead. They had stolen them from the public square of Beth-shan where the Philistines had hung the bodies the day the Philistines killed Saul at Gilboa.(N) 13 David had the bones brought from there. They gathered up the bones of Saul’s family who had been hanged 14 and buried the bones of Saul and his son Jonathan at Zela in the land of Benjamin in the tomb of Saul’s father Kish. They did everything the king commanded. After this, God was receptive to prayer for the land.(O)

The Philistine Giants

15 The Philistines again waged war against Israel. David went down with his soldiers, and they fought the Philistines, but David became exhausted. 16 Then Ishbi-benob, one of the descendants of the giant,[j] whose bronze spear weighed about eight pounds[k] and who wore new armor, intended to kill David. 17 But Abishai son of Zeruiah came to his aid, struck the Philistine, and killed him. Then David’s men swore to him, “You must never again go out with us to battle. You must not extinguish the lamp of Israel.”(P)

18 After this,(Q) there was another battle with the Philistines at Gob. At that time Sibbecai the Hushathite killed Saph, who was one of the descendants of the giant.

19 Once again there was a battle with the Philistines at Gob, and Elhanan son of Jaare-oregim the Bethlehemite killed[l] Goliath of Gath. The shaft of his spear was like a weaver’s beam.(R)

20 At Gath there was still another battle. A huge man was there with six fingers on each hand and six toes on each foot—twenty-four in all. He, too, was descended from the giant. 21 When he taunted Israel, Jonathan, son of David’s brother Shimei, killed him.

22 These four were descended from the giant in Gath and were killed by David and his soldiers.

Acts 1

Prologue

I wrote the first narrative, Theophilus, about all that Jesus began to do and teach(A) until the day he was taken up, after he had given instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles he had chosen.(B) After he had suffered, he also presented himself alive to them by many convincing proofs, appearing to them over a period of forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God.(C)

The Holy Spirit Promised

While he was[a] with them, he commanded them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait for the Father’s promise.(D) “Which,” he said, “you have heard me speak about; for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit in a few days.”(E)

So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, are you restoring the kingdom to Israel at this time?”

He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or periods that the Father has set by his own authority.(F) But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come on you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”(G)

The Ascension

After he had said this, he was taken up as they were watching, and a cloud took him out of their sight. 10 While he was going, they were gazing into heaven, and suddenly two men in white clothes stood by them.(H) 11 They said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up into heaven? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come in the same way that you have seen him going into heaven.”(I)

United in Prayer

12 Then they returned to Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives, which is near Jerusalem—a Sabbath day’s journey away. 13 When they arrived, they went to the room(J) upstairs where they were staying: Peter, John, James, Andrew, Philip, Thomas, Bartholomew, Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, Simon the Zealot, and Judas the son of James.(K) 14 They all were continually united(L) in prayer,[b] along with the women, including Mary the mother of Jesus, and his brothers.(M)

Matthias Chosen

15 In those days Peter stood up among the brothers and sisters[c]—the number of people who were together was about a hundred twenty—and said, 16 “Brothers and sisters, it was necessary that the Scripture be fulfilled that the Holy Spirit through the mouth of David foretold about Judas, who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus.(N) 17 For he was one of our number and shared in this ministry.”(O) 18 Now this man acquired a field with his unrighteous wages. He fell headfirst, his body burst open and his intestines spilled out.(P) 19 This became known to all the residents of Jerusalem, so that in their own language that field is called Hakeldama (that is, “Field of Blood”). 20 “For it is written in the Book of Psalms:

Let his dwelling become desolate;
let no one live in it; [d] and
Let someone else take his position.[e](Q)

21 “Therefore, from among the men who have accompanied us during the whole time the Lord Jesus went in and out among us— 22 beginning from the baptism of John until the day he was taken up from us—from among these, it is necessary that one become a witness with us of his resurrection.”(R)

23 So they proposed two: Joseph, called Barsabbas, who was also known as Justus, and Matthias.(S) 24 Then they prayed,(T) “You, Lord, know everyone’s hearts; show which of these two you have chosen(U) 25 to take the place[f] in this apostolic ministry(V) that Judas left to go where he belongs.” 26 Then they cast lots(W) for them, and the lot fell to Matthias and he was added to the eleven apostles.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Friday June 2, 2023 (NIV)

2 Samuel 19:11-20:13

11 King David sent word to the priests Zadok and Abiathar:(A) “Say to the elders of Judah, ‘Why should you be the last to restore the king to his palace? The talk of all Israel has reached the king at his house. 12 You are my brothers, my flesh and blood.[a](B) So why should you be the last to restore the king?’ 13 And tell Amasa,(C) ‘Aren’t you my flesh and blood?[b] May God punish me and do so severely if you don’t become commander of my army from now on instead of Joab!’”

14 So he won over[c] all the men of Judah, and they unanimously sent word to the king: “Come back, you and all your servants.” 15 Then the king returned. When he arrived at the Jordan, Judah came to Gilgal to meet the king and escort him across the Jordan.

16 Shimei son of Gera,(D) the Benjaminite from Bahurim, hurried down with the men of Judah to meet King David. 17 There were a thousand men from Benjamin with him. Ziba, an attendant from the house of Saul,(E) with his fifteen sons and twenty servants also rushed down to the Jordan ahead of the king. 18 They forded the Jordan to bring the king’s household across and do whatever the king desired.[d]

When Shimei son of Gera crossed the Jordan, he fell facedown before the king 19 and said to him, “My lord, don’t hold me guilty, and don’t remember your servant’s wrongdoing on the day my lord the king left Jerusalem.(F) May the king not take it to heart. 20 For your servant knows that I have sinned. But look! Today I am the first one of the entire house of Joseph to come down to meet my lord the king.”

21 Abishai son of Zeruiah asked, “Shouldn’t Shimei be put to death for this, because he cursed the Lord’s anointed?” (G)

22 David answered, “Sons of Zeruiah, do we agree on anything?(H) Have you become my adversary today? Should any man be killed in Israel today? Am I not aware that today I’m king over Israel?” 23 So the king said to Shimei, “You will not die.” Then the king gave him his oath.(I)

24 Mephibosheth,(J) Saul’s grandson, also went down to meet the king. He had not taken care of his feet, trimmed his mustache, or washed his clothes from the day the king left until the day he returned safely. 25 When he came from Jerusalem to meet the king, the king asked him, “Mephibosheth, why didn’t you come with me?”

26 “My lord the king,” he replied, “my servant Ziba betrayed me. Actually your servant said, ‘I’ll saddle the donkey for myself[e] so that I may ride it and go with the king’—for your servant is lame.(K) 27 Ziba slandered your servant to my lord the king.(L) But my lord the king is like the angel of God,(M) so do whatever you think best.[f] 28 For my grandfather’s entire family deserves death from my lord the king, but you set your servant among those who eat at your table.(N) So what further right do I have to keep on making appeals to the king?”

29 The king said to him, “Why keep on speaking about these matters of yours? I hereby declare: you and Ziba are to divide the land.”(O)

30 Mephibosheth said to the king, “Instead, since my lord the king has come to his palace safely, let Ziba take it all!”

31 Barzillai the Gileadite(P) had come down from Rogelim and accompanied the king to the Jordan River to see him off at the Jordan. 32 Barzillai was a very old man—eighty years old—and since he was a very wealthy man, he had provided for the needs of the king while he stayed in Mahanaim.(Q)

33 The king said to Barzillai, “Cross over with me, and I’ll provide for you[g] at my side in Jerusalem.”

34 Barzillai replied to the king, “How many years of my life are left that I should go up to Jerusalem with the king? 35 I’m now eighty years old.(R) Can I discern what is pleasant and what is not? Can your servant taste what he eats or drinks? Can I still hear the voice of male and female singers? Why should your servant be an added burden to my lord the king?(S) 36 Since your servant is only going with the king a little way across the Jordan, why should the king repay me with such a reward? 37 Please let your servant return so that I may die in my own city near the tomb of my father and mother. But here is your servant Chimham;(T) let him cross over with my lord the king. Do for him what seems good to you.”[h]

38 The king replied, “Chimham will cross over with me, and I will do for him what seems good to you, and whatever you desire from me I will do for you.” 39 So all the people crossed the Jordan, and then the king crossed. The king kissed Barzillai and blessed him, and Barzillai returned to his home.

40 The king went on to Gilgal, and Chimham went with him. All the troops of Judah and half of Israel’s escorted the king. 41 Suddenly, all the men of Israel came to the king. They asked him, “Why did our brothers, the men of Judah, take you away secretly and transport the king and his household across the Jordan, along with all of David’s men?”

42 All the men of Judah responded to the men of Israel, “Because the king is our relative. Why does this make you angry? Have we ever eaten anything of the king’s or been honored at all?” [i]

43 The men of Israel answered the men of Judah, “We have ten shares in the king,(U) so we have a greater claim to David than you. Why then do you despise us? Weren’t we the first to speak of restoring our king?” (V) But the words of the men of Judah were harsher than those of the men of Israel.

Sheba’s Revolt

20 Now a wicked man, a Benjaminite named Sheba son of Bichri, happened to be there. He blew the ram’s horn and shouted:

We have no portion in David,
no inheritance in Jesse’s son.
Each man to his tent,[j] Israel!

So all the men of Israel deserted David and followed Sheba son of Bichri, but the men of Judah from the Jordan all the way to Jerusalem remained loyal to their king.(W)

When David came to his palace in Jerusalem, he took the ten concubines he had left to take care of the palace and placed them under guard.(X) He provided for them, but he was not intimate with them. They were confined until the day of their death, living as widows.

The king said to Amasa, “Summon the men of Judah to me within three days and be here yourself.” Amasa went to summon Judah, but he took longer than the time allotted him. So David said to Abishai, “Sheba son of Bichri will do more harm to us than Absalom. Take your lord’s soldiers and pursue him, or he will find fortified cities and elude us.”[k]

So Joab’s men, the Cherethites, the Pelethites, and all the warriors marched out under Abishai’s command;[l] they left Jerusalem to pursue Sheba son of Bichri. They were at the great stone in Gibeon when Amasa joined them. Joab was wearing his uniform and over it was a belt around his waist with a sword in its sheath. As he approached, the sword fell out. Joab asked Amasa, “Are you well, my brother?” Then with his right hand Joab grabbed Amasa by the beard to kiss him.(Y) 10 Amasa was not on guard against the sword in Joab’s hand, and Joab stabbed him in the stomach with it and spilled his intestines out on the ground. Joab did not stab him again, and Amasa died.(Z)

Joab and his brother Abishai pursued Sheba son of Bichri. 11 One of Joab’s young men had stood over Amasa saying, “Whoever favors Joab and whoever is for David, follow Joab!” 12 Now Amasa had been writhing in his blood in the middle of the highway, and the man had seen that all the troops stopped. So he moved Amasa from the highway to the field and threw a garment over him because he realized that all those who encountered Amasa were stopping.(AA) 13 When he was removed from the highway, all the men passed by and followed Joab to pursue Sheba son of Bichri.

John 21

Jesus’s Third Appearance to the Disciples

21 After this, Jesus revealed(A) himself again to his disciples by the Sea of Tiberias.[a](B) He revealed himself in this way:

Simon Peter,(C) Thomas(D) (called “Twin”[b]), Nathanael(E) from Cana of Galilee,(F) Zebedee’s(G) sons, and two others of his disciples were together.

“I’m going fishing,” Simon Peter said to them.

“We’re coming with you,” they told him. They went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.(H)

When daybreak came, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not know it was Jesus.(I) “Friends,”[c] Jesus called to them, “you don’t have any fish, do you?”

“No,” they answered.

“Cast the net on the right side of the boat,” he told them, “and you’ll find some.” So they did,[d] and they were unable to haul it in because of the large number of fish. The disciple, the one Jesus loved, said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” (J)

When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he tied his outer clothing around him (for he had taken it off) and plunged into the sea. Since they were not far from land (about a hundred yards[e](K) away), the other disciples came in the boat,(L) dragging the net full of fish.

When they got out on land, they saw a charcoal fire there, with fish lying on it, and bread. 10 “Bring some of the fish you’ve just caught,” Jesus told them. 11 So Simon Peter climbed up and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish—153 of them. Even though there were so many, the net was not torn.(M)

12 “Come and have breakfast,” Jesus told them. None of the disciples dared ask him, “Who are you?” because they knew it was the Lord. 13 Jesus came, took the bread, and gave it to them. He did the same with the fish. 14 This was now the third time(N) Jesus appeared[f](O) to the disciples after he was raised from the dead.

Jesus’s Threefold Restoration of Peter

15 When they had eaten breakfast, Jesus asked Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John,[g] do you love me more than these?”

“Yes, Lord,” he said to him, “you know that I love you.”

“Feed my lambs,” he told him. 16 A second time he asked him, “Simon, son of John, do you love(P) me?”(Q)

“Yes, Lord,” he said to him, “you know that I love you.”

“Shepherd(R) my sheep,”(S) he told him.

17 He asked him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love(T) me?”

Peter was grieved(U) that he asked him the third time, “Do you love me?” He said, “Lord, you know everything;(V) you know that I love you.”

“Feed(W) my sheep,” Jesus said. 18 “Truly I tell you,(X) when you were younger, you would tie your belt and walk wherever you wanted. But when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands and someone else will tie you and carry you where you don’t want to go.” 19 He said this to indicate by what kind of death(Y) Peter would glorify God.(Z) After saying this, he told him, “Follow me.”(AA)

Correcting a False Report

20 So Peter turned around and saw the disciple Jesus loved(AB) following them, the one who had leaned back against Jesus at the supper and asked, “Lord, who is the one that’s going to betray you?” (AC) 21 When Peter saw him, he said to Jesus, “Lord, what about him?”

22 “If I want him to remain until I come,”(AD) Jesus answered, “what is that to you? As for you, follow me.”

23 So this rumor[h] spread to the brothers and sisters(AE) that this disciple would not die.(AF) Yet Jesus did not tell him that he would not die, but, “If I want him to remain until I come, what is that to you?”

Epilogue

24 This is the disciple who testifies to these things and who wrote them down. We know that his testimony is true.

25 And there are also many other things that Jesus did, which, if every one of them were written down, I suppose not even the world itself could contain the books[i] that would be written.(AG)

2 Samuel 18:1-19:10, John 20:1-31, Psalm 119:153-176, Proverbs 16:14-15

Today is the first day of June, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian. It is wonderful to be here with you today as we, as we march forward together into this brand-new month, the sixth month of the year, the 152nd day of the year. So, man, 151 steps we have taken together and we march with step 152 into this brand-new month. And may God shine His light upon us and be gracious to us. And lead us in the way that we should go and may we be paying attention and may we obey His leading, and may we continue to gather around the Global Campfire together and take the next step forward together as we navigate this brand-new month. We are obviously picking up where we left off yesterday, and that leads us first back into the book of Second Samuel, where we are reading of a military coup attempt by David’s son Absalom, who wants to be king in his father’s place. And that is going to require that his dad gets killed so that he can kind of take over, and the battle lines are being drawn up in all kinds of little things are going on. And, well, let’s pick up the story, today Second Samuel chapter 18 verse 1 through 19 verse 10.

Commentary:

Okay, so, as we begin this new month and as we pick up where we left off yesterday, this battle between David’s forces and Absalom’s forces has materialized and they fought in the forest of Ephraim and 20,000 people, 20,000 people died over this. And David was heartbroken because the one person he didn’t want to die, his son Absalom, died. So, David had to go through all of the emotions of losing a child, a child who wanted him dead. And then his army was demoralized because of the sadness of the king. And so, David had to kind of get himself together to encourage the troops while grieving the…the recent, like within hour’s loss of his son. So the kingdom is saved and…and David will be brought back to the throne. But he’s also lost a child, which changes everything.

And then, yesterday as we were ending the month in the Gospel of John, Jesus was hanging from a cross and had uttered the words, it is finished and had died and…and was left in a tomb. We greet this brand-new month with the aftermath of that and the aftermath of that is that Jesus isn’t in the tomb. And Mary Magdalene has going to the tomb and He’s not there. And so, she runs back to tell the disciples that somebody came and got Jesus body and they don’t know where it is. And so, Peter and John run to the tomb and sure enough, the body isn’t there. And so, they’re trying to figure out what’s going on and Mary, she lingers, she’s weeping, she’s upset about this, obviously. And as we reach the end of our reading in the Gospel of John today, she sees somebody that she thinks is the caretaker, the gardener. And she says, if you, like where is He basically, where did you put the body, because I’ll go get it. Like, wherever it is, where did you put Him. She doesn’t know that it’s Jesus that she’s talking to. So, it's…it’s really beautiful. She’s there all confused, she sees Jesus, in the Gospel of John, Jesus appears to her and the first thing that comes out of Jesus mouth, after His resurrection, that’s recorded in the Gospel of John, is her name, Mary. I can only imagine the flood of a emotion coming in that moment for May. And I think it’s beautiful that she thought He was a gardener. We started our journey in a garden, a long time ago back on January 1st as we began our journey through the Bible. And it was in the garden. So, for her to see Jesus, almost like a gardener is almost like a return, a restoration of what was lost. We will actually be concluding the Gospel of John tomorrow. And so, we have one more day left before we finish the Gospels. So, let’s drink deeply. That’s not to say that the territory that we are moving into isn’t important, it’s vitally important. But the narratives, the Gospels, that allow us to walk alongside Jesus, we are drawing to a close tomorrow. And so, let’s drink deeply and think back over all that we have learned and all that we have experienced in the Gospels as we continue our journey forward.

Prayer:

Jesus, we thank You. We thank You that we can come to the stories and get to know You. And we thank You for the story of Your resurrection. Today, our hope, our hope is in You for eternal life and it is Your resurrection from the dead, that gives us this hope. And so, we linger in the beauty, and the gentleness, the serenity of this moment with Mary, and we take these intimate, personal moments together with You, with grateful hearts. For Your unstoppable love for us. We love You, we adore You we worship You, we ask that You lead us forward in the way that we should go. And we pray this in Your victorious name. Amen.

Prayer and Encouragements:

Hi, DAB Family. This is God’s Life Speaker, I’m on a beautiful morning walk. Oh, I can smell the honeysuckle, so beautiful. Thank You, Lord, for all of our senses, right, that we could not just see Him but just feel Him with the wind blowing and the honeysuckle smell. Yeah, it’s just beautiful, thank You, Jesus. I have struggled with calling in to the gentleman who lost his son at 24 to suicide. And then Jerry, from Duluth called in and he said exactly what I just could not say, that he feels that he’s gonna get the phone call every single day because of the mental health his son struggles with. And I am with you because I’ve called into this prayer line since, I don’t know, it began in 2017 for my son, Joshua, who’s now 23. Who also struggles with mental health. And I guess, the worst of it would be the parting of them from this earth where we just feel like, as long as they’re here there might be hope to reach them somehow, someone to speak to them. So, Lord, cover this family that has had to bury their 24-year-old son. Lord, that You would just give them peace that is surpassing any kind of human understanding, that doesn’t come from friends, Lord, it comes from You. That they may just embrace that. That You meet their every need. That You sit with them, Lord. We ask it, in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Good morning, DAB, this is Romans 12:2. I would like to pray for Jamie in New Jersey. I want to say, Jamie, thank you so much for your testimony. Every time you call in and you pray, and you say this is Jamie in New Jersey, standing on the word of God, I always get a leap in my heart and just joy. So, I want to say thank you for being consistent and just dedicated to following the Lord. I want to pray for you now. Lord Father, I thank You, oh God, for bringing Jamie in New Jersey, Lord, unto DAB. He’s a blessing to myself and I’m sure to many others. I just lift him up to You, whatever challenges he has, oh God, Father, that You, oh God, would clear the way, that You would make a path. You said You would make crooked paths straight, that You would be a light to our feet and a lamp to our path, oh God. So, today, oh God, I just lift him up to You, Father. And I pray, Father, that that the things that he’s challenged with, that You would intervene, Lord, and You would give him clear direction, that the Holy Spirit would be his guide. Father, You said You would leave us a comforter and Father, I just pray today, oh God, in the name of Jesus, that that comforter, the Holy Spirit, would be Jamie’s guide today. It would direct and order his steps, oh God. That his needs would be met, Father. And I thank You that he’s a blessing to many. I just pray, oh God, for his health and strength, physically, emotionally, spiritually. Father, that He would be complete, not lacking anything. In the name of Jesus, I just thank You Father for Jamie and for the message and for every time he calls, the joy that I receive and the joy that he gives to others. In Jesus name. Amen.

Hello, Daily Audio Bible Family. This is Anne, Starting Over Sister, in Texas. And I just wanted to say again how wonderfully appreciative I am of Daily Audio Bible, Brian and his whole family and the entire community all over the world. It’s just a wonderful, wonderful, wonderful, what we have in this community. And I love hearing everyone who calls, praying with and for all of you. And I had a accident at the gym a week and a half ago. And fractured my left elbow in ten pieces. And I now have half of a faux elbow and I’m so thankful I live in a time when such things are available. And I’m recovering slowly and I have a long recovery, including physical therapy ahead. So, please say a prayer for me that God will help me during this time to have His perspective on everything, including my work, which is I need to work but it’s really been difficult. And just that God will help me to stay close to Him and have wisdom to make good decisions and do what’s right in His eyes, no matter what. I love you all family. God bless.

Hey DAB brothers and sisters, this is Phillip. I’ve been listening for about 2 and a half, I think, coming up on three years, here from Iowa. And I really appreciate all of you guys. I truly appreciate the Hardin’s putting this together. And I pray that you would continue to keep going and continue to preach the Gospel here, as you have been. I just wanted to ask prayer for my wife and my marriage. My wife has been getting deeper and deeper into kind of a fundamentalist/separatist branch of Christianity over the last number of years. We’ve been married almost 9 now. And it…it makes it pretty impossible to have any unity in our marriage. She’s very antagonistic. I’ve been going to a really good church here in town for almost a year. And that has been a huge help. And so, it’s just hard to share any of that with her. She’s…she’s been hurt and I’ve been part of that. I’ve hurt her in many ways and so I’ve been fighting that. Fighting a porn addiction on my part and been having some very good success with some help from some other great guys. Praise the Lord. Only through His power. But I would love to have her along on the journey. So, if you would pray for her to see who Christ really is and to follow Him and not what some men are teaching her online. I pray this in Jesus name.

Hey, Daily Audio Bible. This is the Pastor from Seattle. I would like your help, if you could join me please in prayer. There are three people who are seeking treatment for their post-traumatic stress and some other issues affecting them. And I just wanna make sure, the odds are against them and I want to make sure that they are able to get the treatment, the help and the blessings they need. And their names are Alexandria, Frank and Dennis. So, if you could join me, I’d appreciate it. Heavenly Father, You are so good. And You never wished for us to suffer from addiction. And for people who have gone into harms way in service professions and have seen such tragedy, it’s sad to see them suffering as a result of their service. So, I ask for Your blessing with my three friends and I ask that You please help them to get the treatment that’s right for them. Open up doors and leave no obstacles in front of them. Please help Dennis, and Frank and Alexandria, not only to find their way into the treatment that they need, and to have a path that You have lit in front of them, where You light Your, light the path in front of their feet. But also God, to maybe find their way back to You, into the comfort of Your arms. In Your Holy Heavenly, Wonderful name we pray. Amen.

2 Samuel 18:1-19:10

Absalom’s Defeat

18 David reviewed his troops and appointed commanders of thousands and of hundreds over them. He then sent out the troops, a third under Joab, a third under Joab’s brother Abishai son of Zeruiah, and a third under Ittai of Gath. The king said to the troops, “I must also march out with you.”

“You must not go!” (A) the people pleaded. “If we have to flee, they will not pay any attention to us. Even if half of us die, they will not pay any attention to us because you are worth[a] ten thousand of us. Therefore, it is better if you support us from the city.”

“I will do whatever you think is best,” the king replied to them. So he stood beside the city gate while all the troops marched out by hundreds and thousands. The king commanded Joab, Abishai, and Ittai, “Treat the young man Absalom gently for my sake.” All the people heard the king’s orders to all the commanders about Absalom.

Then David’s forces marched into the field to engage Israel in battle, which took place in the forest of Ephraim. Israel’s army was defeated by David’s soldiers, and the slaughter there was vast that day—twenty thousand dead. The battle spread over the entire area, and that day the forest claimed more people than the sword.

Absalom’s Death

Absalom was riding on his mule when he happened to meet David’s soldiers. When the mule went under the tangled branches of a large oak tree, Absalom’s head was caught fast in the tree. The mule under him kept going, so he was suspended in midair.[b] 10 One of the men saw him and informed Joab. He said, “I just saw Absalom hanging in an oak tree!”

11 “You just saw him!” Joab exclaimed.[c] “Why didn’t you strike him to the ground right there? I would have given you ten silver pieces[d] and a belt!”

12 The man replied to Joab, “Even if I had the weight of a thousand pieces of silver[e] in my hand, I would not raise my hand against the king’s son. For we heard the king command you, Abishai, and Ittai, ‘Protect the young man Absalom for me.’[f](B) 13 If I had jeopardized my own[g] life—and nothing is hidden from the king—you would have abandoned me.”

14 Joab said, “I’m not going to waste time with you!” He then took three spears[h] in his hand and thrust them into Absalom’s chest. While Absalom was still alive in the oak tree, 15 ten young men who were Joab’s armor-bearers surrounded Absalom, struck him, and killed him. 16 Joab blew the ram’s horn, and the troops broke off their pursuit of Israel because Joab restrained them. 17 They took Absalom, threw him into a large pit in the forest, and raised up a huge mound of stones over him.(C) And all Israel fled, each to his tent.(D)

18 When he was alive, Absalom had taken a pillar and raised it up(E) for himself in the King’s Valley,(F) since he thought, “I have no son(G) to preserve the memory of my name.” So he named the pillar after himself. It is still called Absalom’s Monument today.

19 Ahimaaz son of Zadok(H) said, “Please let me run and tell the king the good news that the Lord has vindicated him by freeing him from his enemies.”

20 Joab replied to him, “You are not the man to take good news today. You may do it another day, but today you aren’t taking good news, because the king’s son is dead.” 21 Joab then said to a Cushite, “Go tell the king what you have seen.” The Cushite bowed to Joab and took off running.

22 However, Ahimaaz son of Zadok persisted and said to Joab, “No matter what, please let me also run behind the Cushite!”

Joab replied, “My son, why do you want to run since you won’t get a reward?” [i]

23 “No matter what, I want to run!”

“Then run!” Joab said to him. So Ahimaaz ran by way of the plain and outran the Cushite.

24 David was sitting between the city gates(I) when the watchman went up to the roof of the city gate and over to the wall.(J) The watchman looked out and saw a man running alone. 25 He called out and told the king.

The king said, “If he’s alone, he bears good news.”

As the first runner came closer, 26 the watchman saw another man running. He called out to the gatekeeper, “Look! Another man is running alone!”

“This one is also bringing good news,” said the king.

27 The watchman said, “The way the first man runs looks to me like the way Ahimaaz son of Zadok runs.”(K)

“This is a good man; he comes with good news,”(L) the king commented.

28 Ahimaaz called out to the king, “All is well,” and paid homage to the king with his face to the ground. He continued, “Blessed be the Lord your God! He delivered up the men who rebelled against my lord the king.”

29 The king asked, “Is the young man Absalom all right?”

Ahimaaz replied, “When Joab sent the king’s servant and your servant, I saw a big disturbance, but I don’t know what it was.”

30 The king said, “Move aside and stand here.” So he stood to one side.

31 Just then the Cushite came and said, “May my lord the king hear the good news: The Lord has vindicated you today by freeing you from all who rise against you!”

32 The king asked the Cushite, “Is the young man Absalom all right?”

The Cushite replied, “I wish that the enemies of my lord the king, along with all who rise up against you with evil intent, would become like that young man.”(M)

33 The king was deeply moved and went up to the chamber above the city gate and wept. As he walked, he cried, “My son Absalom! My son, my son Absalom! If only I had died instead of you, Absalom, my son, my son!” (N)

David’s Kingdom Restored

19 It was reported to Joab, “The king is weeping. He’s mourning over Absalom.” That day’s victory was turned into mourning for all the troops because on that day the troops heard, “The king is grieving over his son.” So they returned to the city quietly that day like troops come in when they are humiliated after fleeing in battle. But the king covered his face(O) and cried loudly, “My son Absalom! Absalom, my son, my son!”

Then Joab went into the house to the king and said, “Today you have shamed all your soldiers—those who saved your life as well as your sons, your wives, and your concubines— by loving your enemies and hating those who love you! Today you have made it clear that the commanders and soldiers mean nothing to you. In fact, today I know that if Absalom were alive and all of us were dead, it would be fine with you![j]

“Now get up! Go out and encourage[k] your soldiers, for I swear by the Lord that if you don’t go out, not a man will remain with you tonight.(P) This will be worse for you than all the trouble that has come to you from your youth until now!”

So the king got up and sat in the city gate,(Q) and all the people were told, “Look, the king is sitting in the city gate.” Then they all came into the king’s presence.

Meanwhile, each Israelite had fled to his tent.(R) People throughout all the tribes of Israel were arguing among themselves, saying, “The king rescued us from the grasp of our enemies,(S) and he saved us from the grasp of the Philistines,(T) but now he has fled from the land because of Absalom.(U) 10 But Absalom, the man we anointed over us, has died in battle. So why do you say nothing about restoring the king?”

John 20

The Empty Tomb

20 On(A) the first day of the week(B) Mary Magdalene(C) came to the tomb(D) early, while it was still dark. She saw that the stone(E) had been removed from the tomb. So she went running to Simon Peter(F) and to the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said to them, “They’ve taken the Lord out of the tomb,(G) and we don’t know where they’ve put him!”

At that, Peter and the other disciple went out, heading for the tomb. The two were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and got to the tomb first. Stooping down, he saw the linen cloths(H) lying there, but he did not go in. Then, following him, Simon Peter also came. He entered the tomb and saw the linen cloths lying there. The wrapping(I) that had been on his head was not lying with the linen cloths(J) but was folded up in a separate place by itself. The other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, then also went in, saw, and believed. For they did not yet understand the Scripture(K) that he must rise(L) from the dead.(M) 10 Then the disciples returned to the place where they were staying.

Mary Magdalene Sees the Risen Lord

11 But(N) Mary stood outside the tomb,(O) crying. As she was crying, she stooped to look into the tomb. 12 She saw two angels(P) in white sitting where Jesus’s body(Q) had been lying, one at the head and the other at the feet. 13 They said to her, “Woman, why are you crying?”

“Because they’ve taken away my Lord,”(R) she told them, “and I don’t know where they’ve put him.”

14 Having said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not know it was Jesus.(S) 15 “Woman,” Jesus said to her, “why are you crying? Who is it that you’re seeking?”

Supposing he was the gardener, she replied, “Sir, if you’ve carried him away, tell me where you’ve put him, and I will take him away.”

16 Jesus said to her, “Mary.”

Turning around, she said to him in Aramaic,[a] “Rabboni!”—which means “Teacher.”(T)

17 “Don’t cling to me,” Jesus told her, “since I have not yet ascended(U) to the Father.(V) But go to my brothers(W) and tell them that I am ascending to my Father(X) and your Father, to my God(Y) and your God.”

18 Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord!” (Z) And she told them what[b] he had said to her.

The Disciples Commissioned

19 When it was evening on that first day of the week,(AA) the disciples were gathered together with the doors locked because they feared the Jews. Jesus came, stood among them, and said to them, “Peace be with you.”(AB)

20 Having said this, he showed them his hands and his side.(AC) So the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord.

21 Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me,(AD) I also send you.”(AE) 22 After saying this, he breathed on them(AF) and said,[c] “Receive the Holy Spirit.(AG) 23 If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.”(AH)

Thomas Sees and Believes

24 But Thomas(AI) (called “Twin”[d]), one of the Twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. 25 So the other disciples were telling him, “We’ve seen the Lord!”

But he said to them, “If I don’t see the mark of the nails in his hands, put my finger into the mark of the nails,(AJ) and put my hand into his side,(AK) I will never believe.”(AL)

26 A week later his disciples were indoors again, and Thomas was with them. Even though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.”

27 Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here and look at my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Don’t be faithless, but believe.”(AM)

28 Thomas responded to him, “My Lord and my God!”

29 Jesus said, “Because you have seen me, you have believed.[e] Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe.”(AN)

The Purpose of This Gospel

30 Jesus performed many other signs(AO) in the presence of his disciples that are not written(AP) in this book.(AQ) 31 But these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah,(AR) the Son(AS) of God,[f](AT) and that by believing you may have life in his name.(AU)
