Jeremiah 37:1-38:28, 1 Timothy 6:1-21, Psalms 89:38-52, Proverbs 25:28

Today is the 21st day of October welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I’m Brian and it’s wonderful to be able to have a place to gather like this every day…every day and take the next step forward together. And, so, that’s what we have gathered to do, to take the next step forward together which leads us back into the book of Jeremiah. And today we will read chapters 37 and 38 before moving forward in the New Testament back into first Timothy. But first, Jeremiah.

Commentary:

Okay. So, we are reading through the book of Jeremiah, and we are at the point in the story where the Chaldeans, the Babylonian Empire, has its absolute sights set on Jerusalem and the conquering of Jerusalem. And everyone can surrender, or the Chaldeans can overcome Jerusalem eventually and destroy it completely. This isn’t unfamiliar territory to us. We’ve read through. Like we know that the kingdom of Judah, that Jerusalem does fall, and the people are carried away into exile in Babylon. So, the book of Jeremiah takes us inside the story. It takes us inside the walls of Jerusalem where Jeremiah is prophesying, and we can see how things are beginning to fall apart inside the city. All kinds of different groups of people. Some people are trying to escape and defect. Some people are trying to hold everyone together. People are mad at Jeremiah for basically saying, thus says the Lord, if you want to live, you’ve gotta surrender the Babylonians. If you don’t surrender the Babylonians you’re going to die, which is a demoralizing thing to say to a people who are under siege inside the city walls if you’re expecting somehow that there’s going to be a way out of this. Jeremiah is prophesying that there isn’t a way out of this, like the one way you can live is to surrender. But what we’re talking about is a nation surrendering to another nation. And like that’s a pretty big deal. There’s a king involved, and he’s divided. He’s like…his power has been diminished considerably. If people want to rebel against the king how can the king stop them. Like society is falling apart. There’s nothing to eat. Jeremiah gets arrested, he gets thrown into a well where he sinks in mud where you supposed to die because there’s nothing to eat or drink. And then he gets pulled up out of the well and a secret meeting with the King. We see all of this stuff is just falling apart inside of the city walls. So, the siege that Babylon as enacted against Jerusalem is working. The people are starving. The people are confused. The people are demoralized but they won’t surrender. And, so, the wall is going to get breached, and soldiers are going to come rushing in swinging swords at people, and people are going to die, and people are going to be running. And there’s going to be chaos because that’s what happens when the walls that are protecting you fall down. And, so, Jeremiah is giving us this in a front row seat. We’re taken right inside Jerusalem to see what’s going on.

Now, let’s flip over to the book of Proverbs and read the one sentence Proverb that we read today. One sentence that makes the entire story that we are reading in Jeremiah a story that we need to pay attention to. The proverb says, “he who has no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls.” So, imagine Jerusalem. Imagine there’s a breach in the wall because once that happens, it’s only going to get bigger. Imagine the chaos. Imagine the fighting there at the breach. Imagine the panic inside the city, panic by people who are starving to death. Imagine the adrenaline flowing through the bodies, but their bodies don’t have the strength to actually fight or flee. Imagine enemy soldiers getting in through that breach in the wall and starting to light things on fire and the smoke beginning to rise and the chaos of it all. That’s what it’s like to be one without self-control. It’s like a city that is broken down and without walls, is defenseless. Now we have something to talk about, right? Now we have something to meditate upon all day, all the time. Like we can really really hold onto this one because Jeremiah takes us inside the city, and we see just how crazy it’s getting. And it gives us such a picture of what it looks like when we lose control over ourselves. And that should snap a picture into place for us because we’ve all lost control, like everybody, every human being. But when we never get it back, when we kind of live without self-control, the chaos that our lives look like, indeed look like a city that is broken down and without walls. Looks remarkably like what we’re reading about in the book of Jeremiah. And, so, let’s take that into our day today and think about that and watch ourselves and see when we’re beginning to lose it and remember what the proverb said and remember what it looks like inside of Jerusalem in the book of Jeremiah and understand spiritually, we’re setting ourselves up for the same thing. And ironically, what Jeremiah was telling the people inside Jerusalem is you can live. You can live. You can save your own life as plunder of war. You have to surrender. And again, they were really really wrestling with surrender because you don’t surrender. One sovereign nation doesn’t surrender to another sovereign nation. We’ll fight to the death of the last person. In our case, though, in the book of Proverbs with the city broken down, without walls, we still need to surrender. When we have lost all self-control, we still need to surrender, surrender to the Lordship of the Holy Spirit’s leadership in our lives. That changes everything. It’s worth thinking about today.

Prayer:

Holy Spirit come into this. Thank You for this example. Thank You for personalizing in such a way that we can understand what is going on here and that we can draw parallels because we’ve all lost control and we’ve all seen the chaos of it, but to liken it to the falling of walls, and the rushing in of troops and the fall of a city gives us a picture that we can carry with us. Help us to see that sometimes we can be our own worst enemy and we need to surrender to You. We pray this in the name of Jesus. Amen.

There are things always going on around here, but we have a brand-new resource that is on its way. And it will land on the first day of November, so about a week and a half from now. It is called Sleep, a contemplative journey. And I told the story about it a few days ago in its entirety and you go back to like Tuesday I think and listen there if you haven’t got a chance to hear that. I won’t repeat the whole thing, but this is a necessary resource. At least it was a necessary resource in my life to create, as Jill and I became more and more intentional about rest. And I realized you can’t just go to bed with all of the swirl of anxiety that may have…that the day may have drug in an expect good rest. We kind of have to be intentional about allowing a space to be created within us that allows us to wind down and go to sleep. And, so, this resource was created exactly for that, which is why it’s called Sleep, a contemplative journey. And, as I have been mentioning this is a resource that had a lot of fun being able to create using Dolby Atmos technology, so spatial audio technology, which is a technology that allows your stereo headphones to give you a surround sound, like a more encompassing, a bigger soundfield to listen to, which is just very warm and engaging which is really perfect for this kind of resource. So, nevertheless, November 1st is the day and Sleep, a contemplative journey is available now for preorder. And, so, like the music that’s in sleep, this will be on the streaming services. But the verses and the prayers, like that’s so strange when it’s disembodied from its project. And it sounds like it's…this is the song and then there’s the spoken thing. It’s just strange. So, for example if you have like an Apple device, iPhone something like that and you use Apple music then you’d go to the iTunes store and look for Sleep, a contemplative journey and you can preorder it there or any of the other places that you download music, whatever it is that you use. So, check that out.

Hi everybody this call’s from Waco TX. I’m calling as a…I think I called maybe once or twice over the last few years, but it’s been at least two years since I’ve called, I think. I listen to this podcast every day and it’s very good. It helps me a lot. I just love hearing the Bible in the manner that Brian reads it. So, thank you Brian for that. I’m sober four years now and I’m so grateful for that and happy. I find that I’m just very much alone though and no matter what I do or how much I pray or how hot I try, interacting or whatever I’m at, or whatever I do I’m just unhappy. I just am alone and I’m unhappy. I think ever since I began way back in the past when I was in my addiction, I just think I lost my…well obviously I lost myself, but I lost my happiness and joy and I never really got that back. And, so, you know I’ve been working on rebuilding with my family and stuff and that’s not going great but it’s not horrible either. But the point is, I just need you guys to pray for me for some kind of…something from God to just help me get through this with not feeling so bad all the time and so alone. So, I don’t do all the meetings and all that kind of stuff but just that part never…that part never worked for me. But, you know, I’m working every day and…and everything right. So…I think…well not everything, but you know, the best I can. But anyway, thank you guys so much. Bye.

Jeremiah 37-38

Jeremiah Warns Zedekiah

37 And King Zedekiah the son of Josiah reigned instead of Koniah the son of Jehoiakim, whom Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon made king in the land of Judah. But neither he nor his servants nor the people of the land listened to the words of the Lord, which He spoke through the prophet Jeremiah.

But Zedekiah the king sent Jehukal the son of Shelemiah and Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah, the priest, to the prophet Jeremiah, saying, “Please pray to the Lord our God for us.”

Now Jeremiah was still coming in and going out among the people, for they had not yet put him into prison. At that time Pharaoh’s army had come out of Egypt, and when the Chaldeans who were besieging Jerusalem heard the report of them, they departed from Jerusalem.

Then the word of the Lord came to the prophet Jeremiah, saying: Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: Thus you shall say to the king of Judah who sent you to Me to inquire of Me: Pharaoh’s army which has come out to help you shall return to Egypt, to its own land. The Chaldeans will come again and fight against this city, and take it, and burn it with fire.

Thus says the Lord: Do not deceive yourselves, saying, “The Chaldeans will surely depart from us,” for they will not depart. 10 For though you had struck the whole army of the Chaldeans who fight against you and there remained but wounded men among them, yet every man would rise up in his tent and burn this city with fire.

Jeremiah Imprisoned

11 Now when the army of the Chaldeans had withdrawn from Jerusalem at the approach of Pharaoh’s army, 12 Jeremiah set out from Jerusalem to go into the land of Benjamin to take possession of his property there among the people. 13 When he was in the Gate of Benjamin, a captain of the guard was there whose name was Irijah the son of Shelemiah, the son of Hananiah. And he seized Jeremiah the prophet, saying, “You are falling away to the Chaldeans!”

14 But Jeremiah said, “It is false! I am not falling away to the Chaldeans,” but he did not listen to him. So Irijah seized Jeremiah and brought him to the officials. 15 Therefore the officials were wrathful with Jeremiah, and struck him, and put him in prison in the house of Jonathan the scribe; for they had made that the prison.

16 For Jeremiah had entered the dungeon, that is, the vaulted cell, and Jeremiah had remained there many days. 17 Then Zedekiah the king sent and took him out; and the king asked him secretly in his house, and said, “Is there any word from the Lord?”

And Jeremiah said, “There is!” Then he said, “You shall be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon.”

18 Moreover Jeremiah said to King Zedekiah, “How have I sinned against you or against your servants or against this people that you have put me in prison? 19 Where now are your prophets who prophesied to you, saying, ‘The king of Babylon will not come against you, nor against this land’? 20 Therefore now please listen, O my lord the king. Please let my supplication be accepted before you, that you not cause me to return to the house of Jonathan the scribe, lest I die there.”

21 Then Zedekiah the king commanded that they should commit Jeremiah into the court of the prison and give him daily a piece of bread out of the bakers’ street, until all the bread in the city was finished. Thus Jeremiah remained in the court of the prison.

Jeremiah Thrown Into a Cistern

38 Now Shephatiah the son of Mattan, and Gedaliah the son of Pashhur, and Jukal the son of Shelemiah, and Pashhur the son of Malkijah heard the words that Jeremiah had spoken to all the people, saying: Thus says the Lord: He who remains in this city will die by the sword, by famine, and by pestilence. But he who goes out to the Chaldeans shall live, for he shall have his life as plunder, and shall live. Thus says the Lord: This city shall surely be given into the hand of the king of Babylon’s army, and he will capture it.

Therefore the officials said to the king, “We beseech you, let this man be put to death, for he thus weakens the hands of the men of war who remain in this city and the hands of all the people, in speaking such words to them; for this man does not seek the welfare of this people, but their harm.”

Then Zedekiah the king said, “Here he is; he is in your hand; for the king cannot do anything against you.”

Then they took Jeremiah and cast him into the cistern of Malkijah the son of Hammelech that was in the court of the prison, and they let Jeremiah down with cords. And in the cistern there was no water, only mud, so Jeremiah sank in the mud.

Now Ebed-Melek the Ethiopian, one of the eunuchs who was in the king’s house, heard that they had put Jeremiah in the cistern. Now the king was sitting in the Gate of Benjamin. Ebed-Melek went forth out of the king’s house and spoke to the king, saying, “My lord the king, these men have done evil in all that they have done to Jeremiah the prophet whom they have cast into the cistern. And he will die by hunger in the place where he is, for there is no more bread in the city.”

10 Then the king commanded Ebed-Melek the Ethiopian, saying, “Take thirty men with you from here and take up Jeremiah the prophet out of the cistern before he dies.”

11 So Ebed-Melek took the men under his authority and went into the house of the king under the storeroom and took from there worn-out clothes and worn-out rags and let them down by cords into the cistern to Jeremiah. 12 Then Ebed-Melek the Ethiopian said to Jeremiah, “Now put these worn-out clothes and worn-out rags under your armpits under the cords,” so Jeremiah did accordingly. 13 Then they drew Jeremiah up with cords and took him up out of the cistern, and Jeremiah remained in the court of the prison.

Jeremiah Warns Zedekiah Again

14 Then Zedekiah the king sent and had Jeremiah the prophet brought to him at the third entrance that is in the house of the Lord. And the king said to Jeremiah, “I will ask you something; hide nothing from me.”

15 Then Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, “If I declare it to you, shall you not surely put me to death? And if I give you counsel, you will not listen to me.”

16 So Zedekiah the king swore secretly to Jeremiah, saying, “As the Lord lives, who made our souls, I surely will not put you to death, nor will I give you into the hand of these men who seek your life.”

17 Then Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, “Thus says the Lord, the God of Hosts, the God of Israel: If you will surrender to the officers of the king of Babylon, then your soul will live and this city will not be burned with fire. Thus you and your household will live. 18 But if you do not surrender to the king of Babylon’s officials, then this city will be given into the hand of the Chaldeans, and they will burn it with fire, and you will not escape out of their hand.”

19 Then Zedekiah the king said to Jeremiah, “I am afraid of the Jews who have fallen over to the Chaldeans, lest they deliver me into their hand and mock me.”

20 But Jeremiah said, “They will not deliver you. Please obey the voice of the Lord which I speak to you, so it will be well with you and your soul will live. 21 But if you refuse to surrender, this is the word that the Lord has shown me: 22 Then all the women who are left in the house of the king of Judah will be brought out to the officers of the king of Babylon; and those women shall say:

‘Your friends have misled
and prevailed against you;
while your feet were sunk in the mud,
they turned back.’

23 “So they will bring out all your wives and your children to the Chaldeans. And you will not escape out of their hand, but will be taken by the hand of the king of Babylon; and you will cause this city to be burned with fire.”

24 Then Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, “Let no man know of these words, and you will not die. 25 But if the officials hear that I have talked with you and they come to you and say to you, ‘Declare to us now what you said to the king and what the king said to you; do not hide it from us and we will not put you to death,’ 26 then you will say to them, ‘I presented my supplication before the king, that he would not cause me to return to the house of Jonathan, to die there.’ ”

27 Then all the officials came to Jeremiah and asked him. And he told them according to all these words that the king had commanded; so they stopped speaking with him, for the matter was not overheard.

28 So Jeremiah remained in the court of the prison until the day that Jerusalem was captured.

1 Timothy 6

Let as many servants as are under the yoke of slavery count their own masters worthy of all honor, so that the name of God and His doctrine may not be slandered. Let those who have believing masters not despise them, because they are brothers. Instead, let them serve as slaves, because those who receive their service are faithful and beloved.

False Teaching and True Wealth

Teach and command these things. Anyone who teaches otherwise and does not consent to wholesome words, to the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to godly doctrine is conceited and knows nothing. He has a morbid disposition for controversy and verbal disputes, from which come envy, strife, blasphemies, evil speculations, constant disputes by men of corrupt minds, being destitute of the truth, and supposing that financial gain is godliness. Withdraw yourself from such men.

But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain that we can carry nothing out. If we have food and clothing, we shall be content with these things. But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare and into many foolish and harmful lusts, which drown men in ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money is the root of all evil. While coveting after money, some have strayed from the faith and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

The Good Fight of Faith

11 But you, O man of God, escape these things, and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, and gentleness. 12 Fight the good fight of faith. Lay hold on eternal life, to which you are called and have professed a good profession before many witnesses. 13 I command you, in the sight of God, who gives life to all things, and in the sight of Christ Jesus, who testified a good confession before Pontius Pilate, 14 to keep this commandment without blemish, blameless until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ, 15 which He, who is the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings and Lord of lords, will reveal at the proper time. 16 He alone has immortality, living in unapproachable light, whom no one has seen, nor can see. To Him be honor and everlasting power. Amen.

17 Command those who are rich in this world that they not be conceited, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who richly gives us all things to enjoy. 18 Command that they do good, that they be rich in good works, generous, willing to share, 19 and laying up in store for themselves a good foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of eternal life.

20 O Timothy, guard that which is committed to your trust. Avoid profane babblings and opposing views from so-called knowledge. 21 By professing it, some have erred concerning the faith.

Grace be with you. Amen.

Psalm 89:38-52

38 But now You have cast off and rejected him,
You have been wrathful with Your anointed king.
39 You have renounced the covenant with Your servant;
You have defiled his crown by casting it to the ground.
40 You have broken down all his walls;
You have brought his strongholds to ruin.
41 All who pass by the way plunder him;
he is a reproach to his neighbors.
42 You have set high the right hand of his adversaries;
You have made all his enemies rejoice.
43 You have also turned back the edge of his sword
and have not made him stand in battle.
44 You have made his glory cease
and cast his throne down to the ground.
45 The days of his youth You have shortened;
You have covered him with shame. Selah

46 How long, O Lord? Will You hide Yourself forever?
How long shall Your wrath burn like fire?
47 Remember how short my time is!
Why have You made all people in such emptiness?
48 What man can live and not see death?
Who can deliver his soul from the power of Sheol? Selah
49 Lord, where are Your former lovingkindnesses,
which You swore to David in Your faithfulness?
50 Remember, O Lord, the reproach of Your servants
and how I bear in my heart the insults of the many nations,
51 which Your enemies taunt, O Lord,
with which they mock the footsteps of Your anointed king.

52 Blessed be the Lord forever!
Amen and Amen.

Jeremiah 35:1-36:32, 1 Timothy 5:1-25, Psalm 89:14-37, Proverbs 25:25-27

Today is the 20th day of October, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian and it is a pleasure and joy and an honor and a privilege, to be here with you today, as we gather around the Global Campfire and move forward on our journey through the Bible this year. And obviously, every day leads us to where we left off. That’s how we take the next step forward and that leads us back into the book of Jeremiah. Today, we will read chapters 35 and 36.

Prayer:

Thank You, Father for Your word and another day to spend some time, poring over it and drinking from it, feasting upon it. We thank You for the spiritual nourishment that You provide to us each and every day through the Scriptures, as a gift that has certainly stood the test of time. This gift that finds itself to be relevant in our lives, no matter what time we are reading them. We thank You for the many examples, examples of the prophets like Jeremiah. But also, in today’s reading, the King Josiah listening to Your word and then cutting it out, column by column and throwing it into the fire. That is a stark picture, and we could never imagine ourselves throwing the Scriptures into the fire and yet, when we have heard Your word and are not doers of Your word and ignore Your word, we might as well be throwing it in the fire, and we have done this. So, forgive us Lord, thank You for these examples, all of these people that we have met, all of these stories that we have followed, so much imitates our own lives. You have given us the ability to look into these stories and watch where the story goes, so that we can be warned about where our story is going. Holy Spirit, our story goes nowhere without You. And our story, goes in circles when we don’t obey You and follow Your leadership. Come and lead us and help us to be aware and paying attention, that we might listen, that we might, as we talked about yesterday, practice day-by-day, continually, what it’s like to be a godly person. We pray this in the victorious name of Jesus. Amen.

There is something going on around here, we’ve been talking about for a couple of days, a brand-new resource is on its way. It’s will release on the first day of November, so just under two weeks from now. It is available for pre-order now, wherever you get music, and this is a project called Sleep, A Contemplative Journey. And it follows along with the pattern of Heart, A Contemplative Journey, which was the most recent resource that we’ve released. And so, it’s a guided journey into sleep with versus being read over us, to bring calm and hope and rest. And it is created, well this pretty particular project was mixed in Dolby Atmos. So, that’s called spatial audio on a lot of different devices, and it creates this kind of enveloping sound, surround space, that is just a vast and expansive and just so well suited for project like this because it allows us to kind a just lay down and enter a space that is serene and warm and large and spacious and calm. And then verses that just are interspersed throughout, leading us deeper into rest and hope and encouragement and sleep. Prayer and Encouragements:

This is Adopted Son in Spokane, Washington. I wanted to encourage the family overall that, you have all incredibly encouraged me and specifically listening to Yolonda’s message for her son, Al. I’ve heard Al call in and I remember those calls and I’ve prayed for him before. Boy, I hope there could, you know, I hope this new school situation is a good one. And if it’s not, don't…don’t give up on seeking an even better place. My mother was a single mom, was really poor and she managed to help me get into a school where I got a scholarship and was able to get a better education. I was bullied my freshman year and change schools three times. So, I do understand a little bit, but I’ve never experienced the kind of violence Al went through. And it just broke my heart, brought tears to my eyes to hear what he’s been gone through. So, Lord Jesus, pray that You would bring hope, healing, restoration. I pray that You would bring conviction to these young men, who have been so cruel. Lord Jesus, I pray that Al would experience connection with You and your goodness in, in the midst of suffering. And I pray that You would bring him a strong friend and a relationship with somebody who loves You and knows you. But Lord, I pray that he winds up at the right school. Be with Yolanda, comfort her heart. Help her to be wise. Help her to see what she can do and Lord, just pray, pray over this, because we know You don’t want Al to be harmed at the hands of kids at school. It should be a place for learning. And my heart goes out to, and I’ll continue thinking of you both. Update when you can. Love you guys.

Hey there Daily Audio Bible family, this is John calling, in the car on my way from Massachusetts to Pennsylvania to see my son John and daughter Kelsie, a couple of them, three of them that are down there in Pennsylvania today. Moved to Massachusetts recently, heading back today to play a gig with my son in the band. And spend a couple minutes with them and then shoot back home to Massachusetts again. Anyway, that’s a different story for a different time. I’m calling today for Rich that called from Arkansas. A Rich, I heard your call into the prayer line on the 15th of October, today. My friend you sounded, you sounded a little beat up and down and out. And then you talked about at the top of your prayer just how you used to listen to the DAB and then just ended after that, you didn’t listen to the brothers and sisters. My friend, that’s me too. Going back several years ago, I think it was maybe 2011, 2012 maybe when I first started listening to DAB. And I went through the same thing. In fact, I’m just gonna be honest with everybody, I don’t then, don’t think wrong of me but I wasn’t even walking in the Christian faith then. But I find that everyone was kind of complaining of the stuff that they had going on in their lives. And I didn’t know we had this God, that Jesus lifted us. And that we could go to Him with, with everything. And that you know, where two or more are gathered in His name that, He hears and takes everything to the Father. Anyway, again, that’s another story for another time. I love all of you and I’ve been a part of this community for a long time. And my encouraging word to you, Rich, because you said you needed an encouraging word is that Jesus, is in you. He’s living in your heart. He’s the way maker and the miracle worker. He’s making a difference right now for you. And I love you brother. Over and out.

Hey DAB family, this is Mandela from Western Maryland. Thank you, Brian for this fantastic ministry. Thank you for being faithful and always being there every morning. I’m a long-time listener, it is my second time calling. And just want to thank God for this wonderful community. Today, I would love to ask for prayers for my friend, her name is Barrel. And she just lost her son in a motorcycle accident last week. Yeah, sometimes we just don’t understand why somethings like this happen. And but we know that God has a plan, and this did not happen by surprise to God. So, I just pray and ask that we, that you lift her up and her family at this time, at this terrible time. That He be a comforter to her, she finds a way to, to know Him, if she doesn’t know Him. So, I’m just gonna say a prayer right now. Thank You Lord Jesus, for just this wonderful family. Thank You Lord for all that You do, Lord Jesus. I just pray for my friend, Barrel, who’s mourning and grieving the loss of her son. Pray for all those other people who are also suffering through loss. Lord Jesus, just find a way to give us a sign and to speak to our spirit to understand that we are not alone. I thank You to all those who are carrying other burdens, Lord Jesus. I just pray that You be their comforters and show them the light. Thank You Lord Jesus. Thank you, family. Love you guys and I appreciate the work that everybody does. Make it a great day.

Hi, friends. This is Widowed Mom in Montana. And I’m just asking for prayer because my 16-year-old daughter, I haven’t seen, I’ve reported her as a runaway. And she’s mad at me. And she’s says I make her want to kill herself. And I just want her to come home, I have three other kids. And they’re all coping in their own ways, from the loss of their dad and right now my 16-year-old daughter is acting out. And she says I don’t accept her and she’s just really angry and it’s coming out on me. And I just need God’s peace. My faith has been in the gutter for a while. So, I would appreciate your prayers and support. Thank you.

Hey DAB family, God Bless you all. May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, be with you now and forevermore. I pray that the joy of the Lord will be your strength, right now in this moment, wherever you are, whether you’re traveling or you’re at home, whether it’s the day or night, I pray that the Lord just floods your heart with joy and gives you a reason for your heart to sing and be full of laughter and gladness. Because He is good. I pray that in the midst of whatever we’re going through, whatever you’re going through, that you’ll be able to see His goodness and you’ll be able to be glad, that you’ll be able to rejoice in Him. I just want to lift up a prayer request for my dad who went into hospital yesterday. His name is Dennis. And he went into hospital yesterday with cardiac arrythmia, so his heartbeat is very irregular. He hasn’t responded to medication. He’s been in now for about 18 hours in this situation. And I just wanted to ask you, brothers and sisters, to agree with me in prayer that God will turn it around, that there will be total healing and restoration in the name of Jesus. And I just want to use him as a point of contact and everyone who has family members, friends, dear one’s, loved ones in the hospitals right now. For those that don’t have anyone, we just lift up a prayer of healing, that God would send forth his word. And also, encouragement for those that are in that situation, that God would encourage our hearts and let us have peace in believing in Him. Love you all, God Bless you. Bye Bye.

Jeremiah 35-36

The Rekabites’ Obedience

35 The word which came to Jeremiah from the Lord in the days of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, saying: Go to the house of the Rekabites and speak to them, and bring them into the house of the Lord, into one of the chambers, and give them wine to drink.

Then I took Jaazaniah the son of Jeremiah, the son of Habazziniah, and his brothers and all his sons and the whole house of the Rekabites, and I brought them into the house of the Lord, into the chamber of the sons of Hanan, the son of Igdaliah, a man of God, which was by the chamber of the officials, which was above the chamber of Maaseiah the son of Shallum, the keeper of the door. Then I set before the sons of the house of the Rekabites pots full of wine and cups, and I said to them, “Drink wine.”

But they said, “We will drink no wine. For Jonadab the son of Rekab our father commanded us, saying, ‘You shall not drink wine, neither you nor your sons forever. You shall not build a house, sow seed, plant a vineyard, nor own one; but all your days you shall dwell in tents so that you may live many days in the land where you sojourn.’ Thus we have obeyed the voice of Jonadab the son of Rekab, our father, in all that he has charged us, to drink no wine all our days, we, our wives, our sons, nor our daughters, nor to build houses for us to dwell in; and we do not have vineyard, or field, or seed. 10 But we have lived in tents only and have obeyed and done according to all that Jonadab our father commanded us. 11 But when Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up into the land, we said, ‘Come, and let us go to Jerusalem before the army of the Chaldeans and before the army of the Arameans.’ So we have dwelt in Jerusalem.”

12 Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah, saying: 13 Thus says the Lord of Hosts, the God of Israel: Go and tell the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, Will you not receive instruction by listening to My words? says the Lord. 14 The words of Jonadab the son of Rekab, that he commanded his sons not to drink wine, are performed. For to this day they drink none, but they obey their father’s commandment. However, I have spoken to you, rising early and speaking, but you did not obey Me. 15 I also have sent to you all My servants the prophets, rising up early and sending them, saying, “Return now every man from his evil way and amend your deeds, and do not go after other gods to serve them, and you will dwell in the land that I have given to you and to your fathers.” But you have not inclined your ear nor obeyed Me. 16 Indeed, the sons of Jonadab the son of Rekab have performed the commandment of their father, which he commanded them, but this people has not obeyed Me.

17 Therefore thus says the Lord God of Hosts, the God of Israel: I will bring upon Judah and upon all the inhabitants of Jerusalem all the disaster that I have pronounced against them; because I have spoken to them but they have not listened, and I have called them but they have not answered.

18 Jeremiah said to the house of the Rekabites: Thus says the Lord of Hosts, the God of Israel: Because you have obeyed the commandment of Jonadab your father and kept all his precepts and done according to all that he has commanded you, 19 therefore thus says the Lord of Hosts, the God of Israel, Jonadab the son of Rekab shall not lack a man to stand before Me always.

Jeremiah’s Scroll Is Burned

36 In the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, this word came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying: Take a scroll of a book, and write in it all the words that I have spoken to you against Israel and against Judah and against all the nations, from the day I spoke to you, from the days of Josiah, even to this day. It may be that the house of Judah will hear all the disaster which I intend to do to them, so that every man may turn from his evil way; then I will forgive their iniquity and their sin.

Then Jeremiah called Baruch the son of Neriah. And Baruch wrote on a scroll at the dictation of Jeremiah all the words of the Lord which He had spoken to him. Jeremiah commanded Baruch, saying, “I am shut in. I cannot go into the house of the Lord. Therefore go and read from the scroll that you have written at my dictation the words of the Lord in the hearing of the people in the house of the Lord on a fast day. And also you shall read them in the ears of all Judah who come out of their cities. Perhaps their supplication will come before the Lord, and everyone will turn from his evil way, for great is the anger and the fury that the Lord has pronounced against this people.”

Baruch the son of Neriah did according to all that Jeremiah the prophet commanded him, reading in the book the words of the Lord in the house of the Lord. In the fifth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, in the ninth month, they proclaimed a fast before the Lord to all the people in Jerusalem and to all the people who came from the cities of Judah to Jerusalem. 10 Then Baruch read from the book the words of Jeremiah in the house of the Lord, in the chamber of Gemariah the son of Shaphan the scribe, in the higher court, at the entry of the New Gate of the house of the Lord, in the ears of all the people.

11 When Micaiah the son of Gemariah, the son of Shaphan, had heard out of the book all the words of the Lord, 12 then he went down to the king’s house, into the scribe’s chamber. And all the officials sat there, even Elishama the scribe, and Delaiah the son of Shemaiah, and Elnathan the son of Akbor, and Gemariah the son of Shaphan, and Zedekiah the son of Hananiah, and all the other officials. 13 Then Micaiah declared to them all the words that he had heard when Baruch read the book in the ears of the people. 14 Then all the officials sent Jehudi the son of Nethaniah, the son of Shelemiah, the son of Cushi, to Baruch, saying, “Take in your hand the scroll from which you have read in the ears of the people and come.” So Baruch the son of Neriah took the scroll in his hand and came to them. 15 They said to him, “Sit down now, and read it in our ears.”

So Baruch read it in their ears. 16 When they heard all the words, they turned to one another in fear and said to Baruch, “We will surely tell the king of all these words.” 17 They also asked Baruch, saying, “Tell us now, how did you write all these words? Was it at his mouth?”

18 Then Baruch answered them, “He pronounced all these words to me with his mouth, and I wrote them with ink in the book.”

19 Then the officials said to Baruch, “Go hide, you and Jeremiah, and let no man know where you are.”

20 Then they went to the king in the court, but they laid up the scroll in the chamber of Elishama the scribe, and told all the words in the ears of the king. 21 So the king sent Jehudi to fetch the scroll, and he took it out of Elishama the scribe’s chamber. And Jehudi read it in the ears of the king and in the ears of all the officials who stood beside the king. 22 Now the king sat in the winter house in the ninth month, and there was a fire burning on the hearth before him. 23 As Jehudi read three or four columns, the king cut it with a scribe’s knife and cast it into the fire that was on the hearth, until all the scroll was consumed in the fire that was on the hearth. 24 Yet they were not afraid, nor did they tear their garments, neither the king nor any of his servants who heard all these words. 25 Although Elnathan and Delaiah and Gemariah entreated the king not to burn the scroll, yet he would not listen to them. 26 But the king commanded Jerahmeel the son of Hammelech, and Seraiah the son of Azriel, and Shelemiah the son of Abdeel to seize Baruch the scribe and Jeremiah the prophet. But the Lord hid them.

Jeremiah and Baruch Rewrite the Scroll

27 Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah after the king had burned the book and the words which Baruch had written at the mouth of Jeremiah, saying: 28 Take again another scroll and write in it all the former words that were in the first book, which Jehoiakim the king of Judah has burned. 29 You shall say to Jehoiakim king of Judah: Thus says the Lord: You have burned this book, saying, Why have you written in it that the king of Babylon will certainly come and destroy this land, and will cause man and beast to cease from here? 30 Therefore thus says the Lord concerning Jehoiakim king of Judah: He shall have no one to sit on the throne of David. And his dead body shall be cast out to the heat of the day and the frost of the night. 31 I will also punish him and his seed and his servants for their iniquity. And I will bring upon them and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem and upon the men of Judah all the disaster that I have pronounced against them; but they did not listen.

32 Then Jeremiah took another scroll and gave it to Baruch the scribe, the son of Neriah who wrote in it from the mouth of Jeremiah all the words of the book which Jehoiakim king of Judah had burned in the fire. And there were added to them many like words.

1 Timothy 5

Duties Toward Others

Do not rebuke an elder, but exhort him as a father, the younger men as brothers, the elder women as mothers, and the younger women as sisters, with complete purity.

Honor widows that are widows indeed. But if any widow has children or grandchildren, let them learn first to show piety at home and to repay their parents. For this is good and acceptable before God. Now she who is a widow indeed, and desolate, trusts in God, and continues in supplications and prayers night and day. But she who lives in pleasure is dead while she lives. And these things command, that they may be blameless. But if any do not care for their own, and especially for those of their own house, they have denied the faith and are worse than unbelievers.

Do not let a widow be counted unless she is over sixty years old, has been the wife of one man, 10 is well attested in good works, if she has brought up children, has lodged strangers, has washed the saints’ feet, has relieved the afflicted, and has diligently followed every good work.

11 But refuse the younger widows, for when their sensual desires have drawn them away from Christ, they want to marry, 12 and bring judgment on themselves, because they have cast off their first pledge. 13 Besides that, they learn to be idle, and not only idle, wandering around from house to house, but also gossips and busybodies, saying what they ought not. 14 Therefore I desire that the younger women marry, bear children, manage the house, and give no occasion to the adversary to speak reproachfully. 15 For some have already turned aside after Satan.

16 If any believing man or woman has widows, let those assist them. Do not let the church be charged, so that it may relieve those who are widows indeed.

17 Let the elders who rule well be counted worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in the word and doctrine. 18 For the Scripture says, “You shall not muzzle the ox that treads out the grain,”[a] and, “The laborer is worthy of his reward.”[b] 19 Do not receive an accusation against an elder, except before two or three witnesses. 20 Rebuke in the presence of everyone those who sin, that the rest also may fear. 21 I command you before God and the Lord Jesus Christ and the elect angels that you observe these things without prejudice, doing nothing by partiality.

22 Do not lay hands suddenly on anyone, and do not partake of other men’s sins. Keep yourself pure.

23 No longer drink only water, but use a little wine for your stomach’s sake and your frequent illnesses.

24 Some men’s sins are evident, pointing to judgment, but other men’s sins are revealed later. 25 Likewise, the good works of some are evident, but those that are not cannot be hidden.

Psalm 89:14-37

14 Righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne;
mercy and truth shall go before Your presence.
15 Blessed are the people who know the joyful shout.
They walk, O Lord, in the light of Your presence.
16 In Your name they rejoice all the day,
and in Your righteousness they shall be exalted.
17 For You are the beauty of their strength;
by Your favor our horn is exalted.
18 For the Lord is our shield of defense,
and the Holy One of Israel is our king.

19 Long ago You spoke in a vision
to Your godly one and said:
“I have given help to one who is mighty;
I have exalted one chosen from the people.
20 I have found David, My servant;
with My holy oil I have anointed him:
21 By whom My hand shall be established;
My arm also shall strengthen him.
22 The enemy shall not take tribute from him,
nor the wicked humiliate him.
23 I will beat down his foes before him
and strike down those who hate him.
24 My faithfulness and My mercy shall be with him,
and in My name his horn shall be exalted.
25 I will set his hand on the sea
and his right hand on the rivers.
26 He shall cry unto Me, ‘You are my Father, my God,
and the Rock of my salvation.’
27 Also I will make him my firstborn,
the highest of the kings of the earth.
28 In My mercy I will keep him forever,
and My covenant shall stand firm with him.
29 His offspring also I will establish forever
and his throne as the days of heaven.

30 “If his children forsake My law
and do not walk in My judgments,
31 if they break My statutes
and do not keep My commandments,
32 then I will punish their transgression with the rod
and their iniquity with lashes.
33 Nevertheless My lovingkindness I will not remove from him
nor be false in My faithfulness.
34 My covenant I will not violate
nor alter the word that has gone out from My lips.
35 Once and for all I have sworn by My holiness
that I will not lie to David:
36 His offspring shall endure forever,
and his throne as the sun before Me;
37 it shall be established forever as the moon
and as a faithful witness in the heavens.” Selah

Proverbs 25:25-27

25 As cold waters to a thirsty soul,
so is good news from a far country.
26 A righteous man falling down before the wicked
is as a troubled fountain and a corrupt spring.

27 It is not good to eat much honey;
so for men to search their own glory is not glory.

Jeremiah 33:1-34:22, 1 Timothy 4:1-16, Psalms 89:1-13, Proverbs 25:23-24

Today is the 19th day of October welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I’m Brian it is awesome to be here with you today as we come in and gather around the Global Campfire and move forward on our journey through the Bible. And our journey has led us all the way into the book of Jeremiah. Actually, toward the end of the book of Jeremiah. And, so, we will take the next step forward in the book of Jeremiah today before moving into first Timothy. So, we’re reading from the Modern English Version this week. Jeremiah, chapters 33 and 34.

Commentary:

Okay. So, in the letter of the letter to first Timothy. In the letter to Timothy, known as first Timothy, Timothy received some really interesting instructions. “Exercise in the ways of godliness for bodily exercise profits a little but godliness is profitable in all things, holding promise for the present life and also for the life to come.” So, first off, if you can exercise in the way of godliness or train in a godly way than it’s possible. And we all understand the concept of exercising. Do we ever turn that consideration toward our spiritual lives? Like we may hit the gym, but could we work out in such a way that would lead us to godliness? And if we could, which apparently, we can because we’re reading about it in the Scriptures. How? How can we exercise in the way of godliness? How can we train ourselves to be godly? I remember coming to this territory several years ago, and that just kind of leaping off the page and it became something that…that has stuck along the way because our culture is very very much infatuated with exercise. And it’s more than just an infatuation. Like, most everybody understands like if we work out our bodies, we will gain strength and health. And we all want that. And, so, to find out that the results that we can get physically are also something that we’re to sow into our lives spiritually, sounds like a direction we all need to be moving in. So, how can we exercise godliness? And the truth is, at least the way my mind works, it’s like okay, got to figure out like some sort of discipline…some…something that’s difficult that you have to train for. But it’s like we already know what exercise looks like and we know that if we’re gonna train for something then the main thing we’re gonna to have to do is practice over and over and over until a skill develops from that practice and that skill can grow and become more and more proficient as we practice. Like I remember as a kid playing baseball and I wanted to play baseball. Like, I thought that was gonna be my life. Like baseball’s gonna be my life. And I would wonder, like, why in the world are we practicing ground balls for an hour? Why are we practicing pop-ups for an hour? Like why do we have to keep doing this boring stuff? Let’s play, let’s play the game. But the coaches would be like, until you can learn the fundamentals, until you can do this in your sleep, until you’re not thinking about it anymore than practice is what you need to do over and over and over. And, so, how can we practice, how can we train, how can we exercise for godliness? The short answer is an answer we already know. We imitate Jesus. And this is the fun part of this passage as we consider our lives because we right now have this opportunity to look back at the first day of this journey that we are on. Now maybe you’ve been going along each year with the Daily Audio Bible for 10 years or more, but if we go back to the beginning of this year January 1st we likely went into the new year with some goals and objectives in mind. One of those goals and objectives might have been to read through the entire Bible this year. And if you’re all the way here and listening today then well done. Like that’s been an ongoing thing for the last 292 days. We also, since it’s a very, very ever popular thing to do, decided that we have some fitness goals, or some dietary objectives and we began. I mean we just think back to January 1st for a moment and what you might’ve been thinking and what you might’ve wanted to see yourself achieve. And now here we are, the 19th day of October. Where we went from those decisions that we made on the 1st of January is where we are. And, so, some of us may be experiencing fitness and health and good sleep and all kinds of well-being within ourselves that we have not experienced in years and years. Some of us had high objectives and lofty ideas, but we are exactly where we were when we started on January 1st because we didn’t put any of it into actual ongoing practice. Maybe we went a week, maybe we went to weeks, maybe we went two hours. But if we’re basically where we were when we started this year then we didn’t put it into practice. We didn’t actually do the training necessary. And not just the working out of our body, but the training of our minds, getting ourself on the same page with ourself, understanding that we have a goal and we are going to achieve that goal. Because achieving any goal takes planning and thought and dreaming and then it takes starting and then it takes not stopping. And if it were our goal for example, to lose some weight, shape up, build some strength and we practiced that every day since the beginning of the year then things are quite different for us than when we began. The realization of what we had been practicing has materialized. So, spiritually, our objective is to become observant of ourselves. How are we being pulled in different directions? How did we get pulled from a place of peace and serenity into this place of chaos? How did that happen? What triggered that? What paths are we used to walking that we shouldn’t walk anymore because we should be practicing a different way? Once we can begin to see this, then we can see what’s going on. Then it’s not in the dark anymore. It’s been drug out into the light where it can be seen. It’s at that point that we can take these things that we are aware of to God inviting his Holy Spirit to do what we ask every day, to lead us into all truth. If we’re going to continue to practice unhealthy behaviors, whether in body or in spirit we won’t grow mature and strong. We’ll stay right where we are, or things will get worse. But if we know the time for change has come and change is repentance, once we know the time for change is come, and we begin to walk a new path, then we can’t stop. We keep practicing over and over and over and we began to transform just like our bodies will. If we are absolutely committed to hitting the gym and putting on, say 10 pounds of lean muscle and losing 20 pounds of fat, that can be done. There is a way. And there is a way for us to grow strong spiritually. We have to watch ourselves and see what is entangling us as we practice imitating Christ. And anything in our lives that we insert into our lives as a reminder or a trigger about this can be used. These would be broadly known as spiritual disciplines. And there are plenty, a plethora of resources and ideas about spiritual disciplines. But what we need is what’s going to work for us. I remember hearing a prayer call here at the Daily Audio Bible several months ago now. This one was basically saying like every time they hear the beep of a horn, that reminds them to pray in a certain sort of way. Or any time they see like a red light change or whatever, any little thing that happens that triggers a reminder becomes helpful to us as we become observant of ourselves. The bottom line is that Pauls’ telling Timothy, his son in the faith, to exercise toward godliness, to train himself in godliness. We can do this if we want this bad enough. We can start and start practicing. And we start practicing anything we’re not gonna be that good at it. But if we keep practicing, we’re going to develop the skill and we’re going to get good at it if we don’t quit, if we don’t stop, if we keep moving in a straight line. And what we will begin to realize as were moving in a straight line is that we’re walking a narrow path.

Prayer:

Holy Spirit, we invite You into that. We all need this reminder. We all need to hear this. We have not achieved mastery over any of it. We will be practicing it the rest of our lives. But we don’t want a hit and miss experience anymore. We want to consistently move in the direction of godliness. And You are God. And, so, we are moving toward You. Lead us on this path. Father us that we might grow up and be mature sons and daughters in Your kingdom we pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Announcements:

dailyaudiobible.com is home base and it is where you find out what’s going on around here. And we do have stuff going on around here.

I told the story yesterday, so I’m not gonna tell the whole story again, but a brand-new resource is coming on the radar and will be released on the first day of November, so just a little under two weeks. And this resource is called Sleep, a contemplative journey. And I shared…like if you didn’t get a chance to hear…hear the story yesterday, then, just go back and listen to the story yesterday. But I talked about the origins of this resource, which is part two of a series of resources. The first one was called Heart, a contemplative journey and this new one is called Sleep, a contemplative journey. And it is a resource that is made to be the warm blanket all around us. And I went into how just creating this in spatial audio or Dolby Atmos just to give a massive soundstage all around us so that as we are being lulled into rest and calm and sleep, we are in a space that is very spacious. And I also talked yesterday about how we’re moving into a very traditionally very busy time of year where we lose a lot of sleep and then we go into the new year pretty worn out. What if we were intentional about our rest? What if we paid attention to it as we go through these final months of the year? What went into the new year rested? What would that look like for us? And, so, Sleep, a contemplative journey is available now for preorder wherever it is that you get your music. The songs, the music in Sleep, a contemplative journey will be on the streaming services but it’s a kind of a full project. There’s 20 tracks on it. And 10 of those tracks are versus being spoken over you for your rest to calm your spirit down, whether you’re going to sleep or whether this is a resource that you just kinda have at the ready when you’re feeling anxiety arise and when you are feeling overwhelmed. This is meant to bring calm. So, the music can be streamed, the verses…like the spoken portion of this can’t be streamed. You have to go to like the iTunes store and search for Sleep, a contemplative journey and you can get it all there or…or wherever, at Amazon music or wherever it is that you get your music. You can check it out. Preorder it now and it will show up on the first day of November.

Jeremiah 33-34

The Promise of Restoration

33 Moreover the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah the second time, while he was yet shut up in the court of the prison, saying: Thus says the Lord, the Maker of the earth, the Lord who formed it to establish it; the Lord is His name: Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things which you do not know. For thus says the Lord God of Israel concerning the houses of this city, and concerning the houses of the kings of Judah, which are thrown down to make a defense against the siege mounds and against the sword: They come to fight with the Chaldeans, but it is to fill them with the dead bodies of men whom I have slain in My anger and in My fury, all for whose wickedness I have hidden My face from this city.

I will bring it health and healing, and I will heal them; and I will reveal to them the abundance of peace and truth. I will restore the fortunes of Judah and the fortunes of Israel, and will build them as at the first. I will cleanse them from all their iniquity whereby they have sinned against Me. And I will pardon all their iniquities whereby they have sinned and whereby they have transgressed against Me. It will be to Me a name of joy, praise, and honor before all the nations of the earth which shall hear of all the good that I do to them; and they will fear and tremble for all the goodness and for all the prosperity that I procure for it.

10 Thus says the Lord: Again there shall be heard in this place of which you say, “It is desolate, without man and without beast,” even in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem, that are desolate, without man and without inhabitant, and without beast, 11 the voice of joy, and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom, and the voice of the bride, the voice of those who shall say,

“Give thanks to the Lord of Hosts,
for the Lord is good;
for His mercy endures forever,”

and of those who bring the sacrifice of praise into the house of the Lord. For I will restore the fortunes of the land as at the first, says the Lord.

12 Thus says the Lord of Hosts: Again in this place which is desolate, without man and without beast, and in all the cities, will be a habitation of shepherds causing their flocks to lie down. 13 In the cities of the mountains, in the cities of the vale, and in the cities of the Negev, and in the land of Benjamin, and in the places about Jerusalem, and in the cities of Judah, shall the flocks pass again under the hands of him who numbers them, says the Lord.

The Davidic Covenant

14 Surely, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will perform that good word which I have promised to the house of Israel and to the house of Judah:

15 In those days and at that time,
I will cause a righteous Branch to spring up for David;
and he shall execute justice and righteousness in the earth.
16 In those days Judah will be saved,
and Jerusalem will dwell safely.
And this is the name by which she will be called:

THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.

17 For thus says the Lord: David shall never lack a man to sit on the throne of the house of Israel; 18 nor shall the Levitical priests lack a man before Me to offer burnt offerings, to kindle grain offerings, and to sacrifice continually.

19 The word of the Lord came to Jeremiah, saying: 20 Thus says the Lord: If you can break My covenant of the day and My covenant of the night so that there should not be day and night in their season, 21 then also My covenant may be broken with David My servant, that he should not have a son to reign on his throne, and with the Levitical priests, My ministers. 22 As the host of heaven cannot be numbered nor the sand of the sea measured, so I will multiply the seed of David My servant and the Levites that minister to Me.

23 Moreover the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah, saying: 24 Have you not considered what this people have spoken, saying, “The two families which the Lord has chosen, He has cast them off”? Thus they have despised My people, that they should be no more a nation before them. 25 Thus says the Lord: If My covenant for day and night does not stand, and if I have not appointed the ordinances of heaven and earth, 26 then I would cast away the seed of Jacob and David My servant, so that I would not take any of his seed to be rulers over the seed of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Yet I will restore their fortunes and have mercy on them.

Zedekiah to Die in Exile

34 The word which came to Jeremiah from the Lord when Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and all his army and all the kingdoms of the earth of his dominion and all the people fought against Jerusalem and against all the cities, saying: Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: Go and speak to Zedekiah king of Judah and tell him: Thus says the Lord: I will give this city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he will burn it with fire. And you will not escape out of his hand, but will surely be taken and delivered into his hand. And you will see the king of Babylon eye to eye, and he will speak with you face to face, and you will go to Babylon.

Yet hear the word of the Lord, O Zedekiah king of Judah! Thus says the Lord concerning you: You will not die by the sword. But you will die in peace; and as spices were burned for your fathers, the former kings who were before you, so they burn spices for you. And they will lament for you, saying, “Alas, lord!” For I have pronounced the word, says the Lord.

Then Jeremiah the prophet spoke all these words to Zedekiah king of Judah in Jerusalem, when the king of Babylon’s army fought against Jerusalem, and against all the cities of Judah that were left, against Lachish and Azekah, for these fortified cities remained of the cities of Judah.

Slaves to be Free

This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord after the king Zedekiah had made a covenant with all the people who were in Jerusalem to proclaim liberty to them: that every man should let his male slave and every man his female slave, being a Hebrew man or a Hebrew woman, go free so that no one should keep them, a Jew his brother, in bondage. 10 Now when all the officials and all the people who had entered into the covenant heard that everyone should let his male slave and everyone his female slave go free, so that no one should keep them any more in bondage, then they obeyed and let them go. 11 But afterward they turned around and caused the male slaves and the female slaves whom they had set free to return, and brought them into subjection for male slaves and female slaves.

12 Therefore the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying: 13 Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: I made a covenant with your fathers in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage, saying: 14 “At the end of seven years, each of you shall set free his Hebrew brother who has been sold to you; and when he has served you six years, you shall let him go free from you.” But your fathers did not obey Me nor incline their ear. 15 You recently turned and did what was right in My sight by proclaiming liberty, every man to his neighbor; and you made a covenant before Me in the house that is called by My name. 16 But then you turned around and profaned My name when every one of you took back his male and female slaves, whom you had set free, at their pleasure, and you brought them into subjection to be your slaves.

17 Therefore thus says the Lord: You have not obeyed Me in proclaiming liberty, everyone to his brother and every man to his neighbor. I proclaim a liberty to you, says the Lord, to the sword, to the pestilence, and to the famine; and I will make you a terror to all the kingdoms of the earth. 18 I will give the men who have transgressed My covenant, who have not performed the words of the covenant which they had made before Me, when they cut the calf in two and passed between the parts, 19 the officials of Judah and the officials of Jerusalem, the court officers, and the priests, and all the people of the land, who passed between the parts of the calf, 20 I will even give them into the hand of their enemies and into the hand of those who seek their life; and their dead bodies shall be food to the fowl of heaven and to the beasts of the earth.

21 Zedekiah king of Judah and his officials I will give into the hand of their enemies and into the hand of those who seek their life and into the hand of the king of Babylon’s army, which has gone away from you. 22 I will command, says the Lord, and cause them to return to this city, and they will fight against it and take it and burn it with fire; and I will make the cities of Judah a desolation without an inhabitant.

1 Timothy 4

Prediction of Apostasy

Now the Spirit clearly says that in the last times some will depart from the faith and pay attention to seducing spirits and doctrines of devils, speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their consciences seared with a hot iron, forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from foods, which God has created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth. For everything created by God is good, and not to be refused if it is received with thanksgiving, for it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.

A Good Minister of Christ Jesus

If you remind the brothers of these things, you will be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished by the words of faith and of good doctrine, which you have followed closely. But refuse profane and foolish myths. Instead, exercise in the ways of godliness. For bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness is profitable in all things, holding promise for the present life and also for the life to come. This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance. 10 For to this end we both labor and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Savior of all men, especially of those who believe.

11 Command and teach these things. 12 Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, and in purity. 13 Until I come, give attention to reading, exhortation, and doctrine. 14 Do not neglect the gift that is in you, which was given to you by prophecy, with the laying on of hands by the elders.

15 Meditate on these things. Give yourself completely to them, that your progress may be known to everyone. 16 Take heed to yourself and to the doctrine. Continue in them, for in doing this you will save both yourself and those who hear you.

Psalm 89:1-13

Psalm 89

A Contemplative Maskil of Ethan the Ezrahite.

I will sing of the mercies of the Lord forever;
with my mouth I will make known Your faithfulness to all generations.
For I have said, “Mercy shall be built up forever;
Your faithfulness shall be established in the heavens.”
You have said, “I have made a covenant with my chosen one;
I have sworn to David my servant:
‘Your offspring I will establish forever,
and build up your throne for all generations.’ ” Selah

Let the heavens praise Your wonders, O Lord;
Your faithfulness also in the assembly of the holy ones.
For who in the skies can be compared to the Lord?
Who among the heavenly sons is like the Lord?
God is greatly to be feared in the assembly of the holy ones
and awesome to all those who surround Him.
O Lord God of Hosts, who is a mighty Lord like You,
with Your faithfulness all around You?

You rule the raging of the sea;
when the waves arise, You still them.
10 You crushed Rahab like a corpse;
You scattered Your enemies with Your strong arm.
11 The heavens are Yours; the earth also is Yours;
the world and all that is in it, You have founded them.
12 The north and the south, You have created them;
Tabor and Hermon rejoice in Your name.
13 You have a mighty arm,
and strong is Your hand, and victorious is Your right hand.

Proverbs 25:23-24

and a backbiting tongue an angry countenance.

than with a brawling woman in a wide house.

Jeremiah 31:27-32:44, 1 Timothy 3:1-16, Psalm 88:1-18, Proverbs 25:20-22

Today is the 18th day of October, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian, it is wonderful to be here with you today, as we gather around the Global Campfire and take the next step forward together. And by the way, hang out until the end today. I have a story to tell and an important resource to tell you about. So, we’ll do that at the end, but we are at the beginning. So, let’s step forward together, and that next step forward is always, well it always begins wherever we left off, and right now that happens to be the book of Jeremiah. And so, are step forward today leads us to Jeremiah chapter 31 verse 27 through 32 verse 44.

Commentary:

Okay so, in the letter, known as first Timothy, today, we got a list of criteria that’s not an unusual thing, as we move through these letters. This is very, very practical, and probably something that like we should know, we should understand. So, these are the pastoral letters, they are written from spiritual father to spiritual son, in this case Timothy, who is a pastor. And so, this is pastoral counsel and advice and encouragement, on part of that advice and encouragement in today’s reading are criteria for…for ordained office. And today we saw some criteria for two different functions: one - the office of the deacon of the diaconate, the other for the function of the overseer or the pastor. And regardless of what church you go to, whether it’s a denominational church and nondenominational church no matter what, there are likely criteria. In fact, if you go to a denominational church, I can practically guarantee you, there are criteria for a process of discernment and ordination into that fellowship of people, that denomination. In other words, there’s a process that one goes through to move toward one of these ordained functions in Jesus church. This process obviously begins in a person’s heart who feels drawn toward vocational ministry, like I want to give my life to God’s people and serve God’s people. They feel that begin to burn inside of your heart and start moving in that direction and depending on what direction you’re moving into, with what group of people, there may be in any number of things that you have to achieve. But regardless part of those things are going to incorporate first Timothy and the letter to Titus, because Paul is writing these things down and they will be referenced in the process of moving toward becoming a pastor or becoming an ordained deacon. So, if like you’re on that path and seeking to one day become a pastor or something, something like that, then you are probably already familiar with part of these processes. But even if you don’t have any desire at all to lead God’s people in any sort of vocational way, that doesn’t mean that these things are in, like are not valuable. Like reading first Timothy is not valuable. It’s very valuable for us to understand, this sort of gift mix, the kind of temperamental constitution or makeup that takes for this kind of leadership. And we’ll notice that as we look at the criteria that is laid out in first Timothy, some of these very, very much are temperamental things. Like, how is it that you conduct yourself, how is it that you behave among people. But then there are also moral criteria that are required. If these fundamental criteria aren’t met. I mean just think about it. You go to a church, you have a pastor, you really like that pastor, but that pastor actually has no criteria whatsoever. And so, so if that path, if that person falls into some sort of, let’s say they get involved in an affair in the church. And they’re involved with somebody that’s not their spouse. But is somebody else’s spouse. That can destroy, like literally destroy for the rest of your life the gospel, that can destroy a community and that’s just adultery. But any other number of criteria can be knit together to make a really, really bad mix for a leader. So, it also helps us, just as people who attend a congregation, who are part of a congregation to look and say okay this is, this is what I should, this is what we should be expecting because this is what is expected as told to us by the criteria in the New Testament. So, there are criteria for a pastor or an overseer or a priest or a presbyter or a bishop, depending on which tradition you’re in. The senior spiritual leader of your congregation, right your lead pastor, your founding pastor, like, however you want to name it. And according to first Timothy, a pastor must be a man whose life is above reproach. He must be a faithful spouse to his wife, he must demonstrate self-control, he must live in wisdom, he must have a good reputation, he has to be willing to show hospitality, he’s obviously got to be able to teach. He can be a violent person, he can’t be prone to heavy drinking, he should be gentle and kind, not argumentative and quarrelsome. And he can’t have a love for money. His family should be managed well. He should have children who respect him and obey him. He shouldn’t be a new convert, like he shouldn’t have just come to the faith in Jesus because that would bring about some deficits that would have to be overcome. Like pride, overcoming spiritual pride, it actually takes some experience. And first Timothy tells us, he shouldn’t be a new believer, he might become proud, and the devil would sift him, would, would cause him to fall. And he should have a respectable reputation that goes beyond the church’s walls. People that are outside of the church, should also have respect for who he is and the job that he’s doing, he should be respectable, so that he won’t experience disgrace. So, those are some criteria that are set down in first Timothy for what a pastor is supposed to look like. And a pastor’s role is to care for the Spirit, the spirituality, spiritual care of a congregation, leading them into the knowledge and relationship with God. There was another office that was talked about today, that of the deacon. Many of our churches have the diaconate. Lots of churches, consider this to be an ordained ministry and actual function of the church, while others consider it to be a voluntary position. Regardless, there are criteria for what a deacon is supposed to look like. And a deacon is to serve the pastor. The pastor is looking out for the spiritual well-being of a congregation and the deacon is there to serve the pastor and the congregation by caring for the physical needs of the congregation, the concerns of the earth. And according first Timothy, a deacon must have integrity, must be well respected, he can’t be a heavy drinker or dishonest with money and they should be committed to Jesus and faith in Jesus and live, live that faith, but live that faith with a clear conscience. Their wives must be respected and not be gossips and they have to be able to exercise self-control and be faithful in what they have been consecrated to do, serve God’s people. A deacon has to be faithful in their marriage and they have to be faithful to their children, manage their household, be respected within their household. And so, again, anyone seeking ordained office to serve in God’s church, there’s like virtually no change, you’re not gonna run into what’s been reading about in first Timothy along the way. As criteria for self-examination and even public examination. But these criteria being in the New Testament for us, regardless of whether we’re seeking ordained office or not, lets us know what is expected, what is required. Like, we don’t we don’t see anything here that allows first spiritual abuse, in any sort of way. And really don’t see anything here about celebrity or an unhealthy pursuit of…of influence. If anything, we see the encouragement for a pastor and/or a deacon to serve God’s people by understanding that they’ve been installed there by Jesus, to work on Jesus’s behalf as his hands and feet, to protect people. And we should expect that, we should also be aware, because we’ve been reading the Bible a while now and we see how people are, it’s not like we don’t already know this, but we see how people are in the Bible. We see great leaders like Moses, struggling mightily to keep the people on the same page. We see Jesus struggling mighty, mightily, to get the message across. We see the apostles who were out planting churches, like the apostle Paul, struggling mightily everywhere he goes to try to keep people on the same page. It is not an easy job. So, we can read this criteria and then kind of like lambaste our spiritual leaders for their failures. But until we’ve walked in those shoes, we have no idea how difficult it can be. So, yes, there are some things that we should expect and if you are moving toward vocational ministry, these are things that you’re going to need. It’s not like a list of criteria that you gotta measure up to, you’re gonna need these things, to care for God’s people. So, we can read a list and go, well my pastor doesn’t look like that, my pastor doesn’t look like that. Well, he does look like these three, but that one, definitely not. And we can just like grade or judge our pastor, when that is not, there is no function for that in what we read today. What we can do is pray for them, knowing that their success, is our spiritual growth. Knowing that when they thrive, we can thrive too as a community. When they’re being judged from every angle and discouraged in every way, that is not a direct recipe. There have been, there has been some research and some polling that’s been done since COVID that is really alarming, that more than half of the pastors that have had to lead through the last season are very, very discouraged and thinking about quitting. We need to encourage those in spiritual authority over us. Yes, there are some things that we should expect but understand that a pastor is a person, a human being, like no special underwear is given out when you become a pastor that gives you special powers, as long as you’re wearing it underneath your clergy outfit, whether that be, well, no matter what that is. Pastors, deacons are people with all of the same struggles that every single other person has to deal with. It’s just that they have to model an example and live it out loud in front of everybody. So, often in order to keep everyone strong, a pastor has to endure a lot of things alone. So, let’s take this criteria and let’s take this opportunity that the Bible has just gifted us today, to remember those in spiritual authority over us, those that we have respect for, those that we find who are in leadership over us, those that will, we’re counting on to show us the truth. And let’s understand, it wasn’t just downloaded to them. This is an ongoing office, an ongoing function in God’s church and it can be discouraging at times.

Prayer:

And so, Father, we invite You into that. We pray for all of those that You have called into spiritual leadership in any kind of capacity, but specifically what we’re talking about today, serving inside of Your church. We pray for our pastors. We pray for our deacons. We acknowledge that it is difficult to manage people in any kind of capacity, but it’s really difficult spiritually, when everybody has an opinion about every single possible eventuality. Help us Lord to lead well and we will do that by mirroring You, not something only for pastors, something that everybody is supposed to live into. So, help us, as leaders, to mirror You, to lead people to You. And help us as congregants, to mirror You and get on board with where You are leading, instead of gumming up the works at every possible situation, wherever we can insert our opinion, help us, Lord. We acknowledge the difficulties of being one of being knit together in unity. We can never do this; we’ll never succeed at this without Your help and without Your leadership and without Your example. So, come Holy Spirit, lead us into all truth. We pray in Jesus name we ask. Amen.

Announcements:

Okay, so I said to hang around until the end. I have a story to tell and a something to tell you about that is going to be becoming available. And I guess I needed, I need to start the story and I don’t think it’s like a been a big secret, but I…I tried to make it a point to not insert myself, like to make myself the point of any of what we do here. We’re not here because of me. Jill and I and Ezekiel and China, like we are all here for the same reason that you are, that we desperately need the Scriptures in our lives every day, leading and directing and guiding us. So, it’s not super big secret, I’ve talked about it, along the way, but the last several years, the last five years have been very, very difficult, challenging, painful seasons, that have been necessary, have been growth inspiring, have been character building, have been kind of years of swimming in so many ways in the unknown. Kind of beginning, like now that there’s some perspective there’s been some time, some years, some reflection, kind of beginning, when my mom really, really got sick. And she passed away on the 13th of January, and this past January was the fifth anniversary of that. And I gotta tell ya, I don’t know that I’ve been through something more long term painful, than the grief of losing your mom. And I know, that even as I say that I’m saying that that thousands of people who have experienced that. And even this year, hearing the stories come in of walking through that, it’s just, for me, it was, it was and is still strange. I didn’t quite fully appreciate what my mom, like the glue that she was in my life until it wasn’t there. And then, just having this feeling of like both my parents are gone. I’m an orphan in this world. And I know that’s weird but it’s real, like it's…it’s this feeling that you get like, I’m in a new season. Like I have grown up to become them and they have moved on and now I have this role and my parents of my life, they’re giants in my life. It’s like, how can I fill those shoes. And so, there’s this weirdness about grief that kind of takes you all over the place. And I have good people in my life, surrounding me, that are well educated in the seasons of grief. And so, I’ve been able to give myself a pass, like this doesn’t, you can’t just give yourself 30 days and then you go okay, well the months over now, I’m not grieving anymore. Because at five years later, still feel it, at some point, most every day. So, that’s kind like this beginning. And I remember really, really embracing the Lord in all of it. But also, then really, really immersing myself in the Scriptures, really going deeper, really doing the scholarship, really digging deep because I had a deadline and even though I was grieving, I still had to write The God of Your Story, under deadline. And so, all of that is happening and I’m just kind of feeling really, really exhausted. And then we began developing a farm and construction and building and that’s a whole other thing, a whole other way of finding yourself, frustrated and not knowing how, how you’re going to bring major projects in for a landing. And then during all this time China, our daughter was married, now, she has baby Reagan, like all of these beautiful things but there’s no, like a lot of change. We have a lot of disruption and a lot of change and a layer of grief and a little bit of a layer of like just feeling over, just feeling like you’re swimming in waters that are way too deep for you. It ends up affecting how well you’re able to rest. And that was never really even a category. Like, my whole life, I’ve just been hard charging ahead, like a strategic planner and execute the plan and you know, adjust for the things that you couldn’t see forward but just keep going forward, not really paying attention to rest because rest was abundant, I could lay my head down on the pillow and be asleep in about a minute and sleep all night and wake up excited and ready for the next day. Until this season, like that I’ve just described, began to happen and it begin to affect the way I was resting. And I could tell if I hadn’t rested well. I could tell like the brain fog, just the stuff, I don’t know, the emotional, the emotional state that you can get it when you’re really, really tired. The things you can get aggravated about, the things that you can get emotional over, just all of this stuff that kind of goes with being tired and not really embracing rest well, or not being able to embrace resting well. So, Jill and I especially over the last, I’d say 18 months, two years have really been intentional about like, Sabbath type of rest, like actually trying to find space in our lives to do nothing but rest and not feel guilty about it and that has helped immensely. But even as all of this season was kind of being inaugurated in my life, I had plans, I had this idea, actually several ideas to create resources that helped us as a community going through the Bible every year, to be engaged with the terrain or the landscape of our hearts. And so, there was a project, a couple years ago called Heart, A Contemplative Journey, songs for the heart. And so, there were guided prayers in that project and then music to kind of allow us to take the prayer and meditate upon it and go deeper in it. And that has been a very, very important resource in the community here for many, many, many, many people. And just the nerve that that project touched, I thought it was there, but just hearing the feedback like this really allowed me to have words and language for things that were going on inside of me, that I, that I couldn’t put together in some sort of way that I could think about. And so, putting these things together as prayers really unlocked these things and the music just really allowed all this to go deeper. And so, The Heart resources like, a fantastic resource that we use when we do the Daily Audio Bible Long Walk in July and throughout the rest of the year, anytime we just need a minute to get away and reconnect with our own hearts and reconnect our own hearts with the heart of God. That project took quite a long time to make, but I always thought it would be a series of things that could continually aim our hearts in a direction that it needs to be familiar with. And rest and sleep have been one of the projects, one of the goals, one of the resources that I felt the need to make for myself, knowing that I am not alone at all. And so, it took a couple years to kind of carve out this space that it takes to create like that. And that was able to happen during the summertime this year. And I sat down to create a resource to create a musical journey of the heart, one intended to guide us and lull us into deep, abundant, restorative, rejuvenate, sleep. And most of you know that, you know, my background before ministry was music industry, was being in the recording studio every day of my life, creating music. And so, as an audio engineer, I’ve kind of always kept up with what was going on in that industry. I spent an awful lot of my life in that industry. And in the last couple years, an initiative has happened in the music industry called spatial audio or Dolby Atmos audio which is in effect like a surround sound technology inside of your earbuds. So that inside of your earbuds you don’t just like have a left and right ear perception, but you have perception of what could be above you or what could be behind you or what could be directly in front of you, or what could be off at a distance. Like this, the space is not just stereo left and right, the space is all around you. And I’ve been listening to stuff in spatial audio for well over a year now. Some really, really, it’s been really cool to hear like old Frank Sinatra remixed in spatial audio it’s like holy moly, I’m in the same room with Frank. So, I have very, very much enjoyed the technology itself. It reminds me back in the music business when 5.1 surround audio kinda came out for home, so you could like, have a home theater. And mixing music in 5.1 and having to set up a studio for that and all that way back in the days gone by but that never really caught on for music because you need special equipment for it. But with this new spatial audio you don’t. And so, I read some technical papers and just try to get myself up on what is this and how is this done. Because I’d really love to create a space for sleeping, that is wide and big and expansive and enveloping, like a warm blanket, like a nice hug. And so, I jumped in the hoops to get myself familiar technically with what’s going on and figuring out like what kind of changes to the workflow that I’m familiar with. Like, what would need to change here, how would this need to be done. I figured that all out and then started to compose using spatial audio technology and realizes, wow, this is, this is lovely. Especially for a project like this. This is lovely. Where all of the orchestration all of the arrangement all of the sounds are really meant to be round and soft and pleasing and encouraging and warm. And you know, you can’t have like, all these shocking surprise noises all over the place when you’re trying to go to sleep. So, just to be enveloped in this kind of space. And as I begin to create, I fell in love with it, I enjoyed it immensely. And then and then once I was done creating, then I had to figure out like okay, what you do with this now. Like, how does this end up somewhere like, how does this end up in the digital domain, with all the screaming in and, and digital store services. Because it’s a different file type, is a different thing altogether. So, jump through those hoops, figure that out, held my breath, push the button, released into the atmosphere, released into the internet, hoping everything was going to go well. And everything has gone well. And so, with that little story and the why of the story and the need that is inherent for us to embrace rest and to sleep well and to have sharp and open minds, as we navigate our days on this earth. Has led to the creation of this resource. It’s called Sleep, A Contemplative Journey. And it is kind of volume 2 of this series of resources that began with Heart, A Contemplative Journey. Although Sleep, A Contemplative, Contemplative Journey, is very different than Heart. It kind of follows the same pattern. Rather than a kind of guided prayer journey, I’ve gone through the Scriptures to find hope and hopeful Scriptures for rest and for calm and for sleep. So, this can certainly be used for sleep, but it can also just, it can be used to just find calm within, in these crazy days. So, Sleep, A Contemplative Journey, will release on November first, which is two weeks from today. And you can preorder it now, wherever it is that you get your music. Songs for sleep will, the music part, will be available for streaming but the verse, like the spoken part, the part that kind of pulls it together as that type of project, we’ll need to be purchased from whatever store it is that’s connected to your device. So, like I, kind of an Apple music person, have sort of been that guy since it released all those years ago. And so, like you have to go to the iTunes store and search for Sleep or Brian Hardin. You’ll find Sleep, A Contemplative Journey, search for that and it will come up in the iTunes store and you can preorder the project. That way, on November 1st, it downloads for you automatically and is ready to go. With this brand-new resource that I’ve been my own beta tester and it works really well. This resource will be available, two weeks from today, November 1st. And it is available for preorder right now. And I decided to release it at this time of the year instead of kind of waiting till next year or something because we are navigating ourselves into the busiest time of the year. Over these next couple of months all kinds of reasons to lose sleep, just seem to come out of the woodwork, all time, all kinds of reasons to be exhausted. They just seem to present themselves at this time of the year. And I was thinking, we always look toward the end of the year and we always talk about finishing well because if we don’t finish what we’re doing well, then how can we start we’re going to do next, well. And we’re going to start a new year in a couple of months. What if we went into that new year rested? What if we paid attention to the calm that is necessary for us to have a sense of equilibrium? What if we were intentional about that in this season that we are moving into? And so, Sleep, A Contemplative Journey, will release two weeks from today. And you can go and get your copy right now and I hope you will. Every time we do this, we invite brothers and sisters who have no idea that there’s a Global Campfire, who come across these resources and are led into the family here. So, I hope you can participate. Just search for Sleep, A Contemplative Journey in whatever store that you use for music. And that’s my story and that’s what’s coming next.

And that’s it for today, I’m Brian, I love you and I will be waiting for you here, tomorrow.

Prayer and Encouragement:

Good morning DAB family, this is Saved by Grace in California. I just want to lift up Mary, the friend of one of our DAB family, who has brain cancer and does not know the Lord. Father, in the name of Jesus, I lift up Your child, Mary to You, Father God. Opened her eyes, spiritual eyes to see her need for you in her life, Lord God. Make Yourself ever so present and real in her life right now, in the name of Jesus. We pray for healing in her body. I pray Father, that this tumor would shrink in size, Father God. That, we pray for miracles Father God, You are the same God that parted the Red Sea, Father God. So, we know Father, that You are and still a miracle worker. And I just pray that our sister Mary Father God, would see that You are still in the miracle working business, Father God. And that she can depend on You, Lord and know You Father God. And Lord, I pray that You would send your laborers in her pathway, Father. Speak to her the words of life through Jesus Christ. And Lord, prepare her heart to receive that and we thank You for her, we thank You Lord for what You’re gonna do in her life and the testimony that she’s going to have Lord, that will glorify You and lead others to You. We pray this …

Good afternoon, Daily Audio Bible Family. My name is Valeria, I’m from Kay Springs, Arkansas. It is Thursday, October 13th. And I’m calling today because my heart is so heavy. I’ve two beautiful grand babies ages 2 and 3, a little boy and a little girl. And they were taken from their parents a year ago due to drugs, fighting and neglect. And they have been in a guardianship with a great aunt and uncle now for over year. When they came to these people, they were very emotionally disturbed. Right now, they are very happy, stable, loved and are very well taken care of. But I just found out today, that the dad has filed to dissolve the guardianship and get the kids back. And unbelievably, the judge has signed off on it. The dad is on fentanyl, he smokes, drinks; he can’t hold a job. He’s very angry, dysfunctional. He’s just really messed up. And he’s, in no way, can take care of these sweet babies. In fact, even on the visits he’s had, the little girl is terrified of him and she has nightmares, every time she sees him and scared that he’s going to kidnap her. It would just literally destroy these sweet babies if this happens. But I know that God will not let it happen. It can’t happen. And I truly appreciate every one’s prayers. Thank you so much.

Hi this is Darren from LA. And I’m calling specifically to pray for God’s Tree’s little niece, Ty. God’s Tree, you were there for me, you prayed for me and it is an honor to intercede on behalf of your niece, Ty. Father God, we pray in the name of Jesus. We thank You, God that we can come to you, in confidence Lord knowing, that You are healer, Jehovah Rafa. We call out Your name and we trust in You. We bring this transplant operation that is about to happen, we bring it to You Lord. And we ask that You be with the doctors, Lord, that You give them a deft hand, Lord. We pray for the organs, that they will be received by Ty’s body. We pray for the donor and her family Lord, that You would give them comfort, knowing that there, there lost ones organs are now being transplanted into somebody that loves You, God. And most of all, I just pray for God’s Tree and her family, Lord. That You would just give them reassurance and comfort to know that You’re on it, You’re in it, You’re through it, You’ve got them. Father, we just come before You, just seeking Your glory in the situation, Lord. And we’re just trusting in You, that there’s a great testimony coming forth, Lord. As we speak forth Your healing over Ty. And we pray in the name of Jesus. Amen. God’s Tree, I love you and I thank you for all that you did for me and I will be continuing along with the DAB family, continuing to intercede on behalf of Ty. God bless you, my sister.

Hi, DAB family. I’ve been listening for I guess 10 years but this is my first time calling. I have a very heavy heart. My friend Gretchen was diagnosed with breast cancer at 41, stage 3. Her mom had stage 2 and her sister, stage 4. She finished all her treatments and she’s going to be 44 in December. And she just found out that it’s spread to her bones. And obviously, that’s isn’t, her daughters gonna be 4, actually just a month from today. So, just asking for prayers. She is searching and she says that she believes but then she doubts. You know, first and foremost, I pray for her salvation. But I’m asking for prayers for peace and for healing upon her body and strength for her fiancé and her daughter. And of course, we just want long days for her. And good health, cause she’s had so much happening to her and to her family. So, definitely discouraged over this news but we know that God’s still in control and He is the great healer. So, just looking for prayers for Gretchen and her family. And thanks so much. Love you all. I listen and I pray alongside you and for you and just thanks to Brian and his family for this wonderful platform.

Good morning Daily Audio Bible Family. This is A Girl After God’s Heart, sitting here with my beautiful daughter and we thought that we’d give you a call and lift up a prayer for our little niece Ellie and our cousin Ellie. And she is sick again. She just tiny, she’s 6 months old and this is probably her fourth or fifth respiratory infection, including RSV. So, we just ask that you pray for her. And we just wanted to lift up some prayers from the prayer request today. Number 1, for Lazarus, you said something about maybe we should call you Legion and my heart just jumped and I got cold chills. And I just want you to know that I’m praying for you Lazarus. Obviously, somethings going on. And just know that we’re lifting up prayers for you and I know that you’ve been in tough situations in your life. And I just pray for deliverance over that. And I also wanna lift up Laurie from South Carolina, who talked about her mom dying. And Laurie, I lost my mom a year ago and Lisa the Encourager just lost her mom. Biola, lost her mom. We are in that unfortunate club of the Lost Moms Club, or the moms who went home club. I want to tray and reframe my thinking into that. As Pastor Brian was reading from Psalm 84 today. It just really touched my heart and reminded me, what my journey is and what my mom’s journey. I hope that you’ll re-read that and be blessed by it, like I was. And I want to lift up Colleen from Wala Wala, suffering from stage 4 pancreatic cancer. All of those suffering from pancreatic cancer, know that you are in my prayers. And a special prayer for D2 as he gets out of prison. His life will …

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Tuesday October 18, 2022 (NIV)

Jeremiah 31:27-32:44

27 Surely, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will sow the house of Israel and the house of Judah with the seed of man and with the seed of beast. 28 It shall come to pass that as I have watched over them to pluck up, and to break down, and to throw down, and to destroy, and to afflict, so I will watch over them, to build, and to plant, says the Lord. 29 In those days they will say no more:

“The fathers have eaten sour grapes,
and the children’s teeth are set on edge.”

30 But everyone will die for his own iniquity. Every man that eats the sour grape, his teeth will be set on edge.

A New Covenant

31 Surely, the days are coming, says the Lord,
when I will make a new covenant
with the house of Israel
and with the house of Judah.
32 It will not be according to the covenant
that I made with their fathers
in the day that I took them by the hand
to bring them out of the land of Egypt,
because they broke My covenant,
although I was a husband to them,
says the Lord.
33 But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel
after those days, says the Lord:
I will put My law within them
and write it in their hearts;
and I will be their God,
and they shall be My people.
34 They shall teach no more every man his neighbor
and every man his brother, saying, “Know the Lord,”
for they all shall know Me,
from the least of them to the greatest of them,
says the Lord,
for I will forgive their iniquity,
and I will remember their sin no more.

35 Thus says the Lord,

who gives the sun
for a light by day
and the ordinances of the moon and of the stars
for a light by night,
who stirs up the sea
so that the waves roar,
the Lord of Hosts is His name:
36 If those ordinances depart from before Me,
says the Lord,
then the seed of Israel also will cease
from being a nation before Me forever.

37 Thus says the Lord:

If heaven above can be measured,
and the foundations of the earth searched out beneath,
I will also cast off all the seed of Israel
for all that they have done,
says the Lord.

38 Surely, the days are coming, says the Lord, when the city will be built to the Lord from the Tower of Hananel to the Corner Gate. 39 The measuring line shall stretch out straight to the hill Gareb, and shall then turn to Goah. 40 The whole valley of the dead bodies and of the ashes, and all the fields to the Kidron Valley, to the corner of the Horse Gate toward the east, will be holy to the Lord. It will not be plucked up nor thrown down any more forever.

Jeremiah Buys a Field

32 The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord in the tenth year of Zedekiah king of Judah, which was the eighteenth year of Nebuchadnezzar. For then the king of Babylon’s army besieged Jerusalem, and Jeremiah the prophet was shut up in the court of the prison, which was in the house of the king of Judah.

For Zedekiah king of Judah had shut him up, saying, “Why do you prophesy? You say: Thus says the Lord: I am about to give this city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall take it, and Zedekiah king of Judah will not escape out of the hand of the Chaldeans, but will surely be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon, and will speak with him face to face and see him eye to eye. And he will lead Zedekiah to Babylon, and there he will be until I visit him, says the Lord. Though you fight against the Chaldeans, you will not succeed.”

So Jeremiah said, The word of the Lord came to me, saying: Hanamel the son of Shallum your uncle will come to you, saying, “Buy my field that is in Anathoth. For the right of redemption is yours to buy it.”

So Hanamel my uncle’s son came to me in the court of the prison according to the word of the Lord and said to me, “Please buy my field, that is in Anathoth, which is in the country of Benjamin; for the right of inheritance and the redemption is yours. Buy it for yourself.”

Then I knew that this was the word of the Lord. I bought the field of Hanamel my uncle’s son, that was in Anathoth, and weighed him the money, even seventeen shekels[a] of silver. 10 I signed and sealed the deed, and summoned witnesses, and weighed the money from him in the balances. 11 So I took the deed of purchase, both that which was sealed according to the law and custom, and that which was open. 12 And I gave the deed of purchase to Baruch the son of Neriah, the son of Mahseiah, in the sight of Hanamel my uncle’s son, and in the presence of the witnesses who signed the deed of purchase, before all the Jews who sat in the court of the prison.

13 I charged Baruch in their presence, saying, 14 Thus says the Lord of Hosts, the God of Israel: Take these deeds, this sealed deed of purchase and this deed which is open, and put them in an earthen vessel that they may last many days. 15 For thus says the Lord of Hosts, the God of Israel: Houses and fields and vineyards shall be possessed again in this land.

Jeremiah Prays for Understanding

16 Now when I had delivered the deed of purchase to Baruch the son of Neriah, I prayed to the Lord, saying:

17 Ah Lord God! Truly, You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and outstretched arm, and there is nothing too hard for You. 18 You show lovingkindness to thousands, and recompense the iniquity of the fathers into the bosom of their children after them, O great and mighty God. The Lord of Hosts is His name, 19 great in counsel and mighty in deed, whose eyes are open to all the ways of the sons of men, to give to everyone according to his ways and according to the fruit of his deeds. 20 You have set signs and wonders in the land of Egypt, even to this day, and in Israel, and among other men, and have made Yourself a name, as it is today. 21 And You have brought your people Israel out of the land of Egypt with signs, and with wonders, and with a strong hand, and with a stretched-out arm, and with great terror. 22 And You have given them this land, which You swore to their fathers to give them, a land flowing with milk and honey. 23 And they entered and possessed it. But they did not obey Your voice or walk in Your law. They have done nothing of all that You commanded them to do; therefore You have caused all this calamity to come upon them.

24 See, the siege ramps have come to the city to take it. And the city is given into the hand of the Chaldeans who fight against it, because of the sword, and of the famine, and of the pestilence, and what You have spoken has come to pass, as You can see. 25 O Lord God, You have said to me, “Buy the field for money and call in witnesses,” although the city is given into the hand of the Chaldeans.

God Promises the People’s Return

26 Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah, saying: 27 Behold, I am the Lord, the God of all flesh. Is anything too hard for Me? 28 Therefore thus says the Lord: I will give this city into the hand of the Chaldeans and into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and he shall take it. 29 And the Chaldeans who fight against this city will come and set this city on fire and burn it with the houses, upon whose roofs they have offered incense to Baal and poured out drink offerings to other gods, to provoke Me to anger.

30 Indeed the sons of Israel and the sons of Judah have only done evil before Me from their youth. For the sons of Israel have only provoked Me to anger with the work of their hands, says the Lord. 31 Indeed this city has been to Me a provocation of My anger and My fury from the day that they built it, even to this day, so that I should remove it from before My face, 32 because of all the evil of the sons of Israel and of the sons of Judah which they have done to provoke Me to anger, they, their kings, their officials, their priests, and their prophets, and the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem. 33 They have turned their back to Me and not their face. Though I taught them, rising up early and teaching them, yet they have not listened nor received instruction. 34 But they set their abominations in the house which is called by My name, to defile it. 35 They built the high places of Baal which are in the Valley of Ben Hinnom to cause their sons and their daughters to pass through the fire to Molek, which I had not commanded them, nor did it come into My mind that they should do this abomination, to cause Judah to sin.

36 Now therefore, thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, concerning this city of which you say, “It shall be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon by the sword, and by famine, and by pestilence”: 37 See, I will gather them out of all countries wherever I have driven them in My anger, and in My fury, and in great wrath; and I will bring them again to this place, and I will cause them to dwell safely. 38 And they shall be My people, and I will be their God. 39 And I will give them one heart and one way, that they may fear Me forever, for their good and for their children after them. 40 And I will make an everlasting covenant with them that I will not turn away from them, to do them good. But I will put My fear in their hearts so that they shall not depart from Me. 41 Indeed, I will rejoice over them to do them good, and I will plant them in this land assuredly with My whole heart and with My whole soul.

42 For thus says the Lord: Just as I have brought all this great calamity upon this people, so I will bring upon them all the good that I have promised them. 43 Fields will be bought in this land of which you say, It is desolate, without man or beast. It is given into the hand of the Chaldeans. 44 Men will buy fields for money, sign and seal deeds, and call in witnesses in the land of Benjamin, and in the places about Jerusalem, and in the cities of Judah, and in the cities of the mountains, and in the cities of the valley, and in the cities of the Negev; for I will restore their fortunes, says the Lord.

Qualifications of Overseers

This is a faithful saying: If a man desires the office of an overseer, he desires a good work. An overseer then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, sober, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach; not given to drunkenness, not violent, not greedy for money, but patient, not argumentative, not covetous; and one who manages his own house well, having his children in submission with all reverence. For if a man does not know how to manage his own house, how will he take care of the church of God? He must not be newly converted, so that he does not become prideful and fall into the condemnation of the devil. Moreover he must have a good reputation among those who are outsiders, so that he does not fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.

Qualifications of Deacons

Likewise deacons must be serious, not insincere, not given to much wine, not greedy, keeping the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience. 10 And let them first be tested; then, being found blameless, let them serve as deacons.

11 Likewise, their wives must be serious, not slanderers, sober, and faithful in all things.

12 Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, managing their children and their own houses well. 13 For those who have served well in the office of deacon purchase for themselves good standing and great boldness in the faith, which is in Christ Jesus.

The Mystery of Our Religion

14 I am writing these things to you, hoping to come to you shortly, 15 but if I am delayed, you might know how you ought to conduct yourself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of the truth. 16 Without question, great is the mystery of godliness:

God was revealed in the flesh,
justified in the Spirit,
seen by angels,
preached to the Gentiles,
believed on in the world,
taken up into glory.

Psalm 88

Psalm 88

For the Music Director. A Song. A Psalm of the sons of Korah. To the melody of “Suffering of Affliction.” A Contemplative Maskil of Heman the Ezrahite.

O Lord, God of my salvation,
I cry out day and night before You.
Let my prayer come before You;
incline Your ear to my cry.

For my soul is full of troubles,
and my life draws near to Sheol.
I am counted with those who go down to the grave;
I am a man who has no strength,
like one who is set free among the dead,
like the slain who lie in the grave,
like those whom You remember no more,
for they are cut off from Your hand.

You have laid me in the depths of the pit,
in dark and deep regions.
Your wrath lies heavy upon me,
and You have afflicted me with all Your waves. Selah
You have caused my companions to be far from me;
You have made me an abomination to them;
I am shut up, and I cannot escape;
my eye is dim from my affliction.

Lord, I call daily upon You,
and I have stretched out my hands to You.
10 Will You show wonders to the dead?
Shall the dead rise up to praise You? Selah
11 Shall Your lovingkindness be declared in the grave,
or your faithfulness in Abaddon?
12 Shall Your wonders be known in the darkness
or Your righteousness in the land of forgetfulness?

13 But unto You have I cried, O Lord,
and in the morning my prayer comes before You.
14 O Lord, why do You cast away my soul?
Why do You hide Your face from me?

15 I am afflicted and close to death since my youth;
while I suffer Your terrors I am helpless.
16 Your fierce wrath sweeps over me;
Your terrors destroy me.
17 They come around me daily like a flood;
they encircle me together.
18 You have caused to be far from me my lovers and friends,
and my companion is darkness.

Proverbs 25:20-22

20 As he who takes away a garment in cold weather,
and as vinegar on soda,
so is he who sings songs to a heavy heart.

21 If your enemy is hungry, give him bread to eat;
and if he is thirsty, give him water to drink;
22 for you will heap coals of fire upon his head,
and the Lord will reward you.

Jerimiah 30:1-31:26, 1 Timothy 2:1-15, Psalms 87:1-7, Proverbs 25:18-19

Today is the 17th day of October welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I am Brian and it is wonderful to be here with you today as we gather, as we do every day, gather around the Global Campfire and move forward. And, so, moving forward looks like a continuation of the book of Jeremiah today. And, so, we’ll move back to where we left off. We’re reading from the Modern English Version this week. Jeremiah chapter 30, verse 1 through 31 verse 26.

Prayer:

Father, we love you, we thank you, we glory in you, we worship you, we thank you for your word, we thank you for this gift, we thank you for the opportunity to gather every day. There’s so much to be grateful for, so much to look into, so much to comprehend, so much context, so much application to our lives. It’s a never-ending thing, the adventure of life together with you. And, so, Holy Spirit come. Plant what we’ve read in our lives into our hearts. May it cultivate the fruit of the Spirit inside of us, and may that harvest be bountiful, a hundredfold, spilling out so that we can share with everyone the bountiful harvest that you have placed in our lives. May this be true of us, we pray. In the precious and mighty name of Jesus, we ask. Amen.

Check out the Community section. This is where different links to the social media channels that Daily Audio Bible participates in can be found. That’s good to know. But it’s also the home of the Prayer Wall, which is always there for us any time of day or night. It’s always there for us. So, no matter what’s going on, no matter when it happens, we always have a place that we can turn to and reach out to brothers and sisters throughout the earth and let them know what’s going on. And, so, that’s a great place to go, the Prayer Wall to ask for prayer but it’s also a place to go and offer prayer and participate and be a touch point and be a word of encouragement to brothers and sisters who are facing some real uphill challenges. So, it is an always on, no matter what time of day or night it is resource that’s available here at the community and at that can be found in the Community section. And, so, check that out.

If you want to partner with the Daily Audio Bible, if the mission to bring the spoken word of God read fresh every day and offered freely to whoever will listen wherever they may be on earth or in life wherever they may be, and to build community around the rhythm of showing up every day at the Global Campfire, if that is life-giving to you than thank you humbly for your partnership. There is a link on the homepage at dailyaudiobible.com. If you’re using the app, you can press the Give button in the upper right-hand corner, or the mailing address is PO Box 1996 Spring Hill Tennessee 37174.

And, of course, if you have a prayer request or encouragement, you can hit the Hotline button in the app or you can dial 877-942-4253.

And that’s it for today. I’m Brian I love you and I’ll be waiting for you here tomorrow.

Amen.
