Jeremiah 49:23-50:46, Titus 1:1-16, Psalm 97:1-98:9, Proverbs 26:13-16

Today is the 26th day of October, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian and it’s great to be here with you as we gather around the Global Campfire and find a place and move forward together. Our next step forward will lead us back into the book of Jeremiah in the Old Testament. When we get to the New Testament, we have come to the pastoral epistle of Titus, and we will talk about that when we get there. But first, we’re reading from the New Living Translation this week, Jeremiah chapter 49 verse 23 through 50 verse 46.

Introduction to the Book of Titus:

Okay, so yesterday we finished second Timothy, thought to be the final writing of Paul’s life and we talked about that and tried to give it the honor that it was due and that now brings us today to the book of Titus. So, we’re like reading Paul’s goodbye letter, but we’re still with Paul as we move into the third of the three pastoral letters, which are first and second Timothy and Titus. And these are pastoral letters because they are written to sons in the faith, who are now leading congregations that were planted by the apostle Paul. So, Titus was an early convert, of the apostle Paul’s ministry and remained in ministry with Paul, after that. And he became a trusted ministry partner. He was, he was trusted enough to…to go with Paul and Barnabas to Jerusalem, to attend the Jerusalem Council. And the Jerusalem Council, we talked about aplenty when we were in the book of Acts because that’s where it’s outlined. This is the Council where church leaders are coming together, making a like, an irreversible decision, as it turns out, about how a person is included in the community of faith in Jesus Christ; like do they need to convert to Judaism as a religion and then adhere to the Mosaic Law, including circumcision and all of the other requirements and then be accepted into the community of Jesus, or can they just come to Jesus. Titus was a Gentile, and he was able to be at this Council and that actually mattered, according to the writings of the apostle Paul. The irony is that Titus isn’t mentioned in the book of Acts, we know Titus through Paul’s letters, but getting back to the pastoral epistles. The scenario, the likely scenario and we talked about this before, there’s a ton of conjecture, and it’s not just wild guesses, just to reconstruct history is a scientific process and you reach some places where you don’t have certain evidence and so, you have to make the best guess as you continue to move forward piecing things together. And so, the scenario probably is that Paul was arrested after he appealed to Caesar, but probably was released for a while and was able to travel again. And he traveled to the island of Crete, in order to share about Jesus, a place that had not yet heard the message of the good news. And Cretans were known for their carnality. And so, when Paul comes and brings us new message that hadn’t been heard before, faith springs up. And then Paul left Titus on the island of Crete, to begin to form the congregation, the church on the island of Crete and to kind of navigate leadership in all of the different kind of cultural things that would come against this newly believing congregation. Paul trusted Titus to do this work. Paul had trusted Titus to do all kinds of different types of work, including carrying letters into difficult situations among congregations. So, Paul and Titus do this work in Crete. Paul departs Crete, sends this letter, this pastoral epistle, back to Titus on the island of Crete, probably around the same time that he was writing letters to Timothy. So, by the time this letter does arrive with Titus, on the island of Crete, it would serve a couple of purposes. One, it would be an encouragement from a spiritual father, but also, this would be Paul putting Paul in writing, like his instructions to Titus would be in writing. Paul would be giving Titus authority in the church, in writing. So, if Titus had to make an unpopular decision and people were like Paul would never say we should do these things this way, than Titus would have this letter that would essentially back him up. Because Titus would have work to do, he would need to appoint a pastor and he would need to appoint deacons, he would need to raise up leaders that had respect. So, as we’re going through the letter to Titus here, we’re going to see some of the criteria that we’ve seen in first Timothy. We’ll see some of the criteria for appointing people into leadership in God’s church, this being in written form, Titus would be able to show the Cretans, like this is what Paul says the criteria is, this is how we raise up leaders in the church and he would have this letter to the back that up. And as we said we we’re going through the, well, first Timothy, when we we’re going to first Timothy and there is criteria given there. It mentions like this is where so much criteria for church leadership comes from during the ordination process. So, if you’ve ever sought ordination or been ordained then probably pretty difficult that you didn’t pass through first Timothy and Titus, along the way. And so, with all of that, let’s begin. Titus chapter 1.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word, we love You, Lord, we thank You for the Scriptures and their guidance in our lives and the way that they inform everything, if were paying attention. And so, we thank You, as we continue our journey through Jeremiah now, as we’re in the letter to Titus, Holy Spirit, come, as we ask for just about every day, lead us into all truth. We’ve come here to seek the truth; we’ve come here to seek the right way of life and we’ve come here to allow the Scriptures to reveal what You are like to us. So, Holy Spirit, come and lead us into all truth, as we surrender and submit ourselves to You. We pray this in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Prayer and Encouragements:

Good morning, Daily Audio Bible. This is October the 21st and this is Chris-Ann calling back in. And I am just asking for prayer still, for my marriage and reconciliation with my husband. We’ve been separated for 9 years and 4 years ago we went to court and the Lord intervened and answered prayer of stopping the divorce. And removed the lady out of my husband’s life that he was involved with. And I’m asking again that the Lord and asking for prayers and prayer warriors that the Lord would intervene and would stop this divorce from happening again. That it would not be finalized. We’ve been married for over 32 years; we have one son. And it has just broken my heart in the 9 years I have had so many ups and downs in my life. I never expected to be in the position that I’m in. And while I’ve had some good moments, there’s been some bad moments. This past year, 2022 has been extremely stressful. I had a pet that I dearly loved, had for 17 years and he recently passed away. But the Lord brought another little dog back into my life. It’s just been very difficult being by myself. And I have tried to be really faithful in my prayers. And I am asking for prayer warriors out there to pray for my marriage. And that the Lord would just intervene again. And that He would stop this divorce and that He would reconcile my husband and I to one another. That He would change my husband. I am trusting and believing that this will happen, and I just need all my prayer warriors out there to be praying for this. Thank you and have a good day.

Hey neighbors, it’s Lisa the Encourager. I’m calling today to encourage you in prayer and also just wanted to tell you or share a little story. So, since my mom passed, I definitely have come closer and my attention has grown closer to eternity and you know, what that looks like and what it will be like. And just thinking about my mom in heaven and all of those things. So, one of the things that I also was thinking about is, I always try to, when I start my prayers at home, I try to give God glory for something new, you know that I haven’t thought about, whether that’s food or my health or my kids. Or just try to, each day, try to think of something different and say God, you know, thank You for this. You know, show that true appreciation. One of the things I, I’ve thought about in my life is one day, we’re all going to see God and we’re all gonna have that moment when we see Him and it’s gonna be so, I can’t, I’m sure it’s you know, obviously take your breath away and you just wanna cry and get on your knees and just you know, glorify Him and just, you know, bow down and be like, all the things I should have done, you know, differently. So, I was just trying to bring front and center that to my mind, you know. Think about that day today. Think about what it would be like if God was right there in front of you, what would you do differently today. So, let’s all pray that we will be mindful of that together. Dear Lord God, thank You so much for Your majestic love that You have for us. Thank You for being there and God help us to think about …

Hey fam, it’s Sparky. I’ve got a couple guys here and they were gonna say hi, real quick. Hi, it’s Aiden and Grant. I’m doing good with football, it’s treating me good, I’m playing a lot. So, I’m liking it a lot and schools doing good. Met a lot of friends, so yeah. Yeah, it’s good for me. I met a lot of new friends and I got to come visit which I was really excited. We got to come see my friends and get to hang out. Yeah, DAB fam, I just wanted to tell em to tell ya’ll hello. Cause I told them ya’ll been praying real hard for them. And they’re spreading the love of God up there. So, ya’ll wanna tell them bye? Bye. Bye. Love you guys, thank you for your prayer.

For all the insanity that You’ve already brought me safely through
As well as the many mercies that I still see You every day making new
My spirit cries out, Abba, Father, thank You for loving me so
For holding me tightly and not letting go
For refusing to let anyone or anything snatch me out of Your hand
For surrounding me with love and enabling me to stand
In the face of adversity, heartbreak and stress
Stupidity, rebellion and all the rest of my mess
For taking me out of slavery and setting me free
For giving me a taste of new life in Thee
And even though most of my peers are now all dead
I’ve found myself entertaining visions of new life still ahead
Though at times I’ve asked myself why me
Even in blindness it’s pretty clear to see
That it’s only Your grace, mercy, love and favor shielding me
That has not only kept me alive
But it’s also provided the impetus that has allowed me to thrive
To become more than I ever thought I would be
And I want to thank You Father for loving me
Healer, Deliverer, Sustainer
For me it is a no-brainer
Giving me blessings day after day
As well as new victories all along the way
Blindtony1016@gmail.com I’d like to give a shout out to Sally Young and Tony Parton, I haven’t heard from you in a while. Know you’re often in my thoughts and daily in my prayers. And once again Brian and the Hardin Family, thank you for this wonderful podcast for God’s Holy Spirit to flow. Keep it flowing ya’ll. Alright, bye bye.

Good morning, this is A Woman in Texas. I’d like to thank everybody who prayed for me back in the early parts of the year. My husband was transferred to Arizona, and he was gone 128 days. The Lord had orchestrated it through actually the father of one of my patients, had an opportunity that was perfect for my husband. So, he’s back home, although it’s still a traveling job and I haven’t seen him in 12 days. Cause he’s been in the oil field. But he’s home, he’s here in Texas, he’s not in Arizona anymore. And I’d like to thank everyone for praying for me. I have another prayer request to lift up. I’ve, I was recently in a little fender bender car accident. It did put my car out of commission which all is well. But it’s brought up trauma just from other past car accidents and there’s just, there’s other trauma there that I can feel. And even though the Lord is providing, and all is well, it’s still hard to get out of bed. I’ve cancelled work a lot. I’ve slept all day for like over a week straight. My accident was about a month ago. I could just use your prayers. I know there is so much good and so much to be hopeful and positive about but it’s, it’s really hard to get out of bed. And I would appreciate your prayers. I put a smile on my face but it’s still, it’s hard. I’m sorry, thank you.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Wednesday October 26, 2022 (NIV)

Jeremiah 49:23-50:46

A Message about Damascus

23 This message was given concerning Damascus. This is what the Lord says:

“The towns of Hamath and Arpad are struck with fear,
for they have heard the news of their destruction.
Their hearts are troubled
like a wild sea in a raging storm.
24 Damascus has become feeble,
and all her people turn to flee.
Fear, anguish, and pain have gripped her
as they grip a woman in labor.
25 That famous city, a city of joy,
will be forsaken!
26 Her young men will fall in the streets and die.
Her soldiers will all be killed,”
says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.
27 “And I will set fire to the walls of Damascus
that will burn up the palaces of Ben-hadad.”

A Message about Kedar and Hazor

28 This message was given concerning Kedar and the kingdoms of Hazor, which were attacked by King Nebuchadnezzar[a] of Babylon. This is what the Lord says:

“Advance against Kedar!
Destroy the warriors from the East!
29 Their flocks and tents will be captured,
and their household goods and camels will be taken away.
Everywhere shouts of panic will be heard:
‘We are terrorized at every turn!’
30 Run for your lives,” says the Lord.
“Hide yourselves in deep caves, you people of Hazor,
for King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon has plotted against you
and is preparing to destroy you.

31 “Go up and attack that complacent nation,”
says the Lord.
“Its people live alone in the desert
without walls or gates.
32 Their camels and other livestock will all be yours.
I will scatter to the winds these people
who live in remote places.[b]
I will bring calamity upon them
from every direction,” says the Lord.
33 “Hazor will be inhabited by jackals,
and it will be desolate forever.
No one will live there;
no one will inhabit it.”

A Message about Elam

34 This message concerning Elam came to the prophet Jeremiah from the Lord at the beginning of the reign of King Zedekiah of Judah. 35 This is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies says:

“I will destroy the archers of Elam—
the best of their forces.
36 I will bring enemies from all directions,
and I will scatter the people of Elam to the four winds.
They will be exiled to countries around the world.
37 I myself will go with Elam’s enemies to shatter it.
In my fierce anger, I will bring great disaster
upon the people of Elam,” says the Lord.
“Their enemies will chase them with the sword
until I have destroyed them completely.
38 I will set my throne in Elam,” says the Lord,
“and I will destroy its king and officials.
39 But I will restore the fortunes of Elam
in days to come.
I, the Lord, have spoken!”

A Message about Babylon

50 The Lord gave Jeremiah the prophet this message concerning Babylon and the land of the Babylonians.[c] This is what the Lord says:

“Tell the whole world,
and keep nothing back.
Raise a signal flag
to tell everyone that Babylon will fall!
Her images and idols[d] will be shattered.
Her gods Bel and Marduk will be utterly disgraced.
For a nation will attack her from the north
and bring such destruction that no one will live there again.
Everything will be gone;
both people and animals will flee.

Hope for Israel and Judah

“In those coming days,”
says the Lord,
“the people of Israel will return home
together with the people of Judah.
They will come weeping
and seeking the Lord their God.
They will ask the way to Jerusalem[e]
and will start back home again.
They will bind themselves to the Lord
with an eternal covenant that will never be forgotten.

“My people have been lost sheep.
Their shepherds have led them astray
and turned them loose in the mountains.
They have lost their way
and can’t remember how to get back to the sheepfold.
All who found them devoured them.
Their enemies said,
‘We did nothing wrong in attacking them,
for they sinned against the Lord,
their true place of rest,
and the hope of their ancestors.’

“But now, flee from Babylon!
Leave the land of the Babylonians.
Like male goats at the head of the flock,
lead my people home again.
For I am raising up an army
of great nations from the north.
They will join forces to attack Babylon,
and she will be captured.
The enemies’ arrows will go straight to the mark;
they will not miss!
10 Babylonia[f] will be looted
until the attackers are glutted with loot.
I, the Lord, have spoken!

Babylon’s Sure Fall

11 “You rejoice and are glad,
you who plundered my chosen people.
You frisk about like a calf in a meadow
and neigh like a stallion.
12 But your homeland[g] will be overwhelmed
with shame and disgrace.
You will become the least of nations—
a wilderness, a dry and desolate land.
13 Because of the Lord’s anger,
Babylon will become a deserted wasteland.
All who pass by will be horrified
and will gasp at the destruction they see there.

14 “Yes, prepare to attack Babylon,
all you surrounding nations.
Let your archers shoot at her; spare no arrows.
For she has sinned against the Lord.
15 Shout war cries against her from every side.
Look! She surrenders!
Her walls have fallen.
It is the Lord’s vengeance,
so take vengeance on her.
Do to her as she has done to others!
16 Take from Babylon all those who plant crops;
send all the harvesters away.
Because of the sword of the enemy,
everyone will run away and rush back to their own lands.

Hope for God’s People

17 “The Israelites are like sheep
that have been scattered by lions.
First the king of Assyria ate them up.
Then King Nebuchadnezzar[h] of Babylon cracked their bones.”
18 Therefore, this is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies,
the God of Israel, says:
“Now I will punish the king of Babylon and his land,
just as I punished the king of Assyria.
19 And I will bring Israel home again to its own land,
to feed in the fields of Carmel and Bashan,
and to be satisfied once more
in the hill country of Ephraim and Gilead.
20 In those days,” says the Lord,
“no sin will be found in Israel or in Judah,
for I will forgive the remnant I preserve.

The Lord’s Judgment on Babylon

21 “Go up, my warriors, against the land of Merathaim
and against the people of Pekod.
Pursue, kill, and completely destroy[i] them,
as I have commanded you,” says the Lord.
22 “Let the battle cry be heard in the land,
a shout of great destruction.
23 Babylon, the mightiest hammer in all the earth,
lies broken and shattered.
Babylon is desolate among the nations!
24 Listen, Babylon, for I have set a trap for you.
You are caught, for you have fought against the Lord.
25 The Lord has opened his armory
and brought out weapons to vent his fury.
The terror that falls upon the Babylonians
will be the work of the Sovereign Lord of Heaven’s Armies.
26 Yes, come against her from distant lands.
Break open her granaries.
Crush her walls and houses into heaps of rubble.
Destroy her completely, and leave nothing!
27 Destroy even her young bulls—
it will be terrible for them, too!
Slaughter them all!
For Babylon’s day of reckoning has come.
28 Listen to the people who have escaped from Babylon,
as they tell in Jerusalem
how the Lord our God has taken vengeance
against those who destroyed his Temple.

29 “Send out a call for archers to come to Babylon.
Surround the city so none can escape.
Do to her as she has done to others,
for she has defied the Lord, the Holy One of Israel.
30 Her young men will fall in the streets and die.
Her soldiers will all be killed,”
says the Lord.

31 “See, I am your enemy, you arrogant people,”
says the Lord, the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.
“Your day of reckoning has arrived—
the day when I will punish you.
32 O land of arrogance, you will stumble and fall,
and no one will raise you up.
For I will light a fire in the cities of Babylon
that will burn up everything around them.”

33 This is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies says:
“The people of Israel and Judah have been wronged.
Their captors hold them and refuse to let them go.
34 But the one who redeems them is strong.
His name is the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.
He will defend them
and give them rest again in Israel.
But for the people of Babylon
there will be no rest!

35 “The sword of destruction will strike the Babylonians,”
says the Lord.
“It will strike the people of Babylon—
her officials and wise men, too.
36 The sword will strike her wise counselors,
and they will become fools.
The sword will strike her mightiest warriors,
and panic will seize them.
37 The sword will strike her horses and chariots
and her allies from other lands,
and they will all become like women.
The sword will strike her treasures,
and they all will be plundered.
38 A drought[j] will strike her water supply,
causing it to dry up.
And why? Because the whole land is filled with idols,
and the people are madly in love with them.

39 “Soon Babylon will be inhabited by desert animals and hyenas.
It will be a home for owls.
Never again will people live there;
it will lie desolate forever.
40 I will destroy it as I[k] destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah
and their neighboring towns,” says the Lord.
“No one will live there;
no one will inhabit it.

41 “Look! A great army is coming from the north.
A great nation and many kings
are rising against you from far-off lands.
42 They are armed with bows and spears.
They are cruel and show no mercy.
As they ride forward on horses,
they sound like a roaring sea.
They are coming in battle formation,
planning to destroy you, Babylon.
43 The king of Babylon has heard reports about the enemy,
and he is weak with fright.
Pangs of anguish have gripped him,
like those of a woman in labor.

44 “I will come like a lion from the thickets of the Jordan,
leaping on the sheep in the pasture.
I will chase Babylon from its land,
and I will appoint the leader of my choice.
For who is like me, and who can challenge me?
What ruler can oppose my will?”

45 Listen to the Lord’s plans against Babylon
and the land of the Babylonians.
Even the little children will be dragged off like sheep,
and their homes will be destroyed.
46 The earth will shake with the shout, “Babylon has been taken!”
and its cry of despair will be heard around the world.

Titus 1

Greetings from Paul

This letter is from Paul, a slave of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ. I have been sent to proclaim faith to[a] those God has chosen and to teach them to know the truth that shows them how to live godly lives. This truth gives them confidence that they have eternal life, which God—who does not lie—promised them before the world began. And now at just the right time he has revealed this message, which we announce to everyone. It is by the command of God our Savior that I have been entrusted with this work for him.

I am writing to Titus, my true son in the faith that we share.

May God the Father and Christ Jesus our Savior give you grace and peace.

Titus’s Work in Crete

I left you on the island of Crete so you could complete our work there and appoint elders in each town as I instructed you. An elder must live a blameless life. He must be faithful to his wife,[b] and his children must be believers who don’t have a reputation for being wild or rebellious. A church leader[c] is a manager of God’s household, so he must live a blameless life. He must not be arrogant or quick-tempered; he must not be a heavy drinker,[d] violent, or dishonest with money.

Rather, he must enjoy having guests in his home, and he must love what is good. He must live wisely and be just. He must live a devout and disciplined life. He must have a strong belief in the trustworthy message he was taught; then he will be able to encourage others with wholesome teaching and show those who oppose it where they are wrong.

10 For there are many rebellious people who engage in useless talk and deceive others. This is especially true of those who insist on circumcision for salvation. 11 They must be silenced, because they are turning whole families away from the truth by their false teaching. And they do it only for money. 12 Even one of their own men, a prophet from Crete, has said about them, “The people of Crete are all liars, cruel animals, and lazy gluttons.”[e] 13 This is true. So reprimand them sternly to make them strong in the faith. 14 They must stop listening to Jewish myths and the commands of people who have turned away from the truth.

15 Everything is pure to those whose hearts are pure. But nothing is pure to those who are corrupt and unbelieving, because their minds and consciences are corrupted. 16 Such people claim they know God, but they deny him by the way they live. They are detestable and disobedient, worthless for doing anything good.

  3. 1:7a Or An overseer, or A bishop.
  4. 1:7b Greek must not drink too much wine.
  5. 1:12 This quotation is from Epimenides of Knossos.

Psalm 97-98

Psalm 97

The Lord is king!
Let the earth rejoice!
Let the farthest coastlands be glad.
Dark clouds surround him.
Righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne.
Fire spreads ahead of him
and burns up all his foes.
His lightning flashes out across the world.
The earth sees and trembles.
The mountains melt like wax before the Lord,
before the Lord of all the earth.
The heavens proclaim his righteousness;
every nation sees his glory.
Those who worship idols are disgraced—
all who brag about their worthless gods—
for every god must bow to him.
Jerusalem[a] has heard and rejoiced,
and all the towns of Judah are glad
because of your justice, O Lord!
For you, O Lord, are supreme over all the earth;
you are exalted far above all gods.

10 You who love the Lord, hate evil!
He protects the lives of his godly people
and rescues them from the power of the wicked.
11 Light shines on the godly,
and joy on those whose hearts are right.
12 May all who are godly rejoice in the Lord
and praise his holy name!

Psalm 98

A psalm.

Sing a new song to the Lord,
for he has done wonderful deeds.
His right hand has won a mighty victory;
his holy arm has shown his saving power!
The Lord has announced his victory
and has revealed his righteousness to every nation!
He has remembered his promise to love and be faithful to Israel.
The ends of the earth have seen the victory of our God.

Shout to the Lord, all the earth;
break out in praise and sing for joy!
Sing your praise to the Lord with the harp,
with the harp and melodious song,
with trumpets and the sound of the ram’s horn.
Make a joyful symphony before the Lord, the King!

Let the sea and everything in it shout his praise!
Let the earth and all living things join in.
Let the rivers clap their hands in glee!
Let the hills sing out their songs of joy
before the Lord,
for he is coming to judge the earth.
He will judge the world with justice,
and the nations with fairness.

Proverbs 26:13-16

13 The lazy person claims, “There’s a lion on the road!
Yes, I’m sure there’s a lion out there!”

14 As a door swings back and forth on its hinges,
so the lazy person turns over in bed.

15 Lazy people take food in their hand
but don’t even lift it to their mouth.

16 Lazy people consider themselves smarter
than seven wise counselors.

Jeremiah 48:1-49:22, 2 Timothy 4:1-22, Psalms 95:1-96:13, Proverbs 26:9-12

Today is the 25th day of October, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I’m Brian it is wonderful to be here with you today as we take the next step forward in our journey that leads us through the entire Bible in an entire year. Here we are on the 25th day of October. So, we kind of know where we are in the year which gives us a good sense of where we are in the Bible. And specifically, where we are in the Bible is in the book of Jeremiah, at least in the Old Testament, and we will conclude the book of Jeremiah during this week and then move forward from there, but we’re not there yet. Today we’re reading from the New Living Translation. Jeremiah chapter 48 verse 1 through 49 verse 22.

Commentary:

Okay. So, we concluded second Timothy today and by many thought to be the final writings of the apostle Paul. We’re not done with the apostle Paul in the New Testament. We have a couple of smaller letters that we’ll finish up before moving forward away from the apostle Paul, but there is certainly a melancholy that exists in second Timothy. We can hear it in the reading, and we can hear an urgency in the letter. And when we reacquaint ourselves with the idea that Paul is in prison, will be judged, the judgment will be life or death, the judgment is likely to be death, which is what it turned out to be, and that there aren’t a lot of people left around Paul. It’s like he gave his wife for this message and in the end, he was mostly alone. And that is so similar to the way Jesus experienced His last days as well. And Paul gives Timothy some charges just in case they don’t get to see each other again Timothy’s supposed to keep his head, keep a clear mind, be ready to share the gospel regardless of what comes against him, which is an example that Paul had modeled for Timothy. And if this opposition turns in the persecution, then Timothy was to face it without fear. And if the people that Timothy was leading abandoned him in search of somebody else to give them…well…giver their itching ears what they wanted to hear, then Timothy was to keep telling the truth regardless of what happened, to continue to be a pastor to those under his care. And then Paul told Timothy, “as for me”, quoting from second Timothy, “as for me, my life has already been poured out as an offering to God. The time of my death is near. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, and I have remained faithful.” I know that’s a super popular very very famous passage in the Scriptures. It just always feels so melancholy to me when we come by this territory. It is a like a pit in my stomach even as I’m talking about it. I think honestly it just…it’s probably because it doesn’t seem fair. And that’s what it is. If I’m just being honest, it doesn’t seem fair. We have examples like Jesus or example like the apostle Paul who devote themselves to bringing freedom to people who only end up dead, but they ended up alone before they ended up dead. And I’m in no way saying Jesus didn’t rise. But that’s what we do, right? We just skip over that part and get to the resurrection part, not that Jesus actually had to die alone first, not that Paul…yes her received the crown of life that he was looking for. We believe that. But he still had to sit in the dungeon awaiting his own execution first. And for what? To try to help people? That just feels like injustice. Nothing about it looks like victory, which is one of the scandals of the gospel. It’s that you win by losing. You gain life by giving it away. And yet just kind of listening through what Paul has to say through each of his letters what we realize is that Paul is certainly passionate and very forthright and very direct. He’s all of these things indeed. But underneath it all it seems to have been the honor of Paul’s life to serve Jesus, to consider everything that he learned and understood as filthy rags to lose it all in order to attain Christ. Paul had fought the good fight and finished the race. He did everything he could do and kept the faith. This doesn’t seem like victory based on the cultures that we live in, right? Dominance seems like victory. Crushing your opponent seems like victory. And, so, Paul, he’s the one that gets crushed. Jesus gets crushed. This doesn’t seem like victory, which makes us step back and go, what is victory? And then we begin to realize it really is all backwards. It really is an upside-down world, that the truth really is, if we were able to love the Lord our God with all our heart, soul, mind and strength and love each other as we love ourselves, then we would stand up and be right side right it can, then we would be back to where we were intended to be. We would humble ourselves and know we are not the sovereign and know we are not in control and not even want to be in control, having surrendered control, having surrendered to the Lordship of Jesus Christ in our lives. And one of the things that we will notice is that Paul endured. He endured his entire ministry and he endured until the end. He believed what he was saying enough to die for what he was saying and did. He followed the example of Jesus and endured until the end. This idea of enduring is certainly all throughout the writings of the apostle Paul, but it is all throughout the New Testament. It’s so ironic that our Savior endured and that people like the apostle Paul endured. And as we continue to read through the rest of the New Testament, we’re going to find out that we’re being encouraged whether it be by James or Peter or Paul that enduring is an important piece of the equation. And it’s like the one thing that subtly inside of our culture and even inside of our own mindset that we think that we get to avoid because of Jesus. Like somehow Jesus makes everything work together for our good, so that we won’t have to endure what is difficult and hard, and maybe even painful. It’s only that that’s not the story that’s in the Bible. All of these stories include endurance and hardship and difficulty. And none of it is purposeless, it is all about advancing a message forward into humanity that there is a better way. In fact, not just a better way. There is a way at all to do this. We were made in a certain way, a way that prefers the other, a way that loves our neighbor as ourselves, a way that we shoulder each other’s burdens, we endure together. And, so, as we leave second Timothy, like I said we still have a couple short letters from the apostle Paul. So, where not leaving Paul just yet, but we will be within days. So, as we’re considering this life, the life of a person who wrote more of the New Testament that’s been handed down to us than any other author, that endurance actually is a category. And even as I’m sitting here talking about this, I know this, and I still don’t like it. I don’t want to endure. It’s hard. It’s painful, it wears us down. It does all kinds of things that are difficult. Like it challenges pride and every other thing that’s selfish within us when we have to endure something by humbling ourselves and walking through it. And yet this is the story of all of the people in the New Testament. This is the story of church history even. And, so, why would endurance not ever touch us? And why do we act like toddlers when it does? We have it better than any of the people in the New Testament had it and we’re carrying the same story forward with us. And, so, hardship, difficulty, pain, endurance are all part of the story. How we embrace that part of the story makes all of the difference. Has it been an honor to serve Jesus? Are we fortunate to be able to join with Him in His suffering in enduring on behalf of and for the sake of others? Or is this whole religion about what we can get and how quickly we can get it? To honor the idea of this being Paul’s final letter and the melancholy that’s in it, like don’t forget my coat that I loaned to him, don’t forget my papers, try to get here before winter, everybody has abandoned me. We’re going to have to consider endurance. It’s gonna have to be an actual category because it reveals for us where our true allegiance lies. And, so, in honoring Paul as we prepare to leave Paul behind for this particular journey through the Scriptures let’s honor Paul by considering endurance in our own lives and what it means to us and how it is we process that when it comes our way.

Prayer:

Holy Spirit, come. We invite You into that. If…if endurance could be a word lifted from our vocabulary and taken away from the human experience, we’d probably sign up immediately. We would rather not go through hard times. We would rather not go through the disruption of it. And yet, in the Scriptures, we see it is nearly unavoidable and has great purpose. And, so, it’s something that we don’t want to sign up for, but it’s something we have to be willing to follow You into wherever You are going for whatever purpose You are going there. And, so, some things are going to have to change in our hearts. And, so, as we approach this and as we approach what’s coming next in the New Testament, as we continue this journey where endurance becomes more and more a part of the story may we see that. May we see how our forebears endured and how they processed, and may we look at our own lives and see just how well we actually have it. We thank You God for Your love. We thank You Jesus for Your sacrifice. Thank You, Holy Spirit, for Your comfort. Lead us into all truth, we pray. In the name of Jesus, we ask. Amen.

Jeremiah 48:1-49:22

A Message about Moab

48 This message was given concerning Moab. This is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, the God of Israel, says:

“What sorrow awaits the city of Nebo;
it will soon lie in ruins.
The city of Kiriathaim will be humiliated and captured;
the fortress will be humiliated and broken down.
No one will ever brag about Moab again,
for in Heshbon there is a plot to destroy her.
‘Come,’ they say, ‘we will cut her off from being a nation.’
The town of Madmen,[a] too, will be silenced;
the sword will follow you there.
Listen to the cries from Horonaim,
cries of devastation and great destruction.
All Moab is destroyed.
Her little ones will cry out.[b]
Her refugees weep bitterly,
climbing the slope to Luhith.
They cry out in terror,
descending the slope to Horonaim.
Flee for your lives!
Hide[c] in the wilderness!
Because you have trusted in your wealth and skill,
you will be taken captive.
Your god Chemosh, with his priests and officials,
will be hauled off to distant lands!

“All the towns will be destroyed,
and no one will escape—
either on the plateaus or in the valleys,
for the Lord has spoken.
Oh, that Moab had wings
so she could fly away,[d]
for her towns will be left empty,
with no one living in them.
10 Cursed are those who refuse to do the Lord’s work,
who hold back their swords from shedding blood!

11 “From his earliest history, Moab has lived in peace,
never going into exile.
He is like wine that has been allowed to settle.
He has not been poured from flask to flask,
and he is now fragrant and smooth.
12 But the time is coming soon,” says the Lord,
“when I will send men to pour him from his jar.
They will pour him out,
then shatter the jar!
13 At last Moab will be ashamed of his idol Chemosh,
as the people of Israel were ashamed of their gold calf at Bethel.[e]

14 “You used to boast, ‘We are heroes,
mighty men of war.’
15 But now Moab and his towns will be destroyed.
His most promising youth are doomed to slaughter,”
says the King, whose name is the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.
16 “Destruction is coming fast for Moab;
calamity threatens ominously.
17 You friends of Moab,
weep for him and cry!
See how the strong scepter is broken,
how the beautiful staff is shattered!

18 “Come down from your glory
and sit in the dust, you people of Dibon,
for those who destroy Moab will shatter Dibon, too.
They will tear down all your towers.
19 You people of Aroer,
stand beside the road and watch.
Shout to those who flee from Moab,
‘What has happened there?’

20 “And the reply comes back,
‘Moab lies in ruins, disgraced;
weep and wail!
Tell it by the banks of the Arnon River:
Moab has been destroyed!’
21 Judgment has been poured out on the towns of the plateau—
on Holon and Jahaz[f] and Mephaath,
22 on Dibon and Nebo and Beth-diblathaim,
23 on Kiriathaim and Beth-gamul and Beth-meon,
24 on Kerioth and Bozrah—
all the towns of Moab, far and near.

25 “The strength of Moab has ended.
His arm has been broken,” says the Lord.
26 “Let him stagger and fall like a drunkard,
for he has rebelled against the Lord.
Moab will wallow in his own vomit,
ridiculed by all.
27 Did you not ridicule the people of Israel?
Were they caught in the company of thieves
that you should despise them as you do?

28 “You people of Moab,
flee from your towns and live in the caves.
Hide like doves that nest
in the clefts of the rocks.
29 We have all heard of the pride of Moab,
for his pride is very great.
We know of his lofty pride,
his arrogance, and his haughty heart.
30 I know about his insolence,”
says the Lord,
“but his boasts are empty—
as empty as his deeds.
31 So now I wail for Moab;
yes, I will mourn for Moab.
My heart is broken for the men of Kir-hareseth.[g]

32 “You people of Sibmah, rich in vineyards,
I will weep for you even more than I did for Jazer.
Your spreading vines once reached as far as the Dead Sea,[h]
but the destroyer has stripped you bare!
He has harvested your grapes and summer fruits.
33 Joy and gladness are gone from fruitful Moab.
The presses yield no wine.
No one treads the grapes with shouts of joy.
There is shouting, yes, but not of joy.

34 “Instead, their awful cries of terror can be heard from Heshbon clear across to Elealeh and Jahaz; from Zoar all the way to Horonaim and Eglath-shelishiyah. Even the waters of Nimrim are dried up now.

35 “I will put an end to Moab,” says the Lord, “for the people offer sacrifices at the pagan shrines and burn incense to their false gods. 36 My heart moans like a flute for Moab and Kir-hareseth, for all their wealth has disappeared. 37 The people shave their heads and beards in mourning. They slash their hands and put on clothes made of burlap. 38 There is crying and sorrow in every Moabite home and on every street. For I have smashed Moab like an old, unwanted jar. 39 How it is shattered! Hear the wailing! See the shame of Moab! It has become an object of ridicule, an example of ruin to all its neighbors.”

40 This is what the Lord says:

“Look! The enemy swoops down like an eagle,
spreading his wings over Moab.
41 Its cities will fall,
and its strongholds will be seized.
Even the mightiest warriors will be in anguish
like a woman in labor.
42 Moab will no longer be a nation,
for it has boasted against the Lord.

43 “Terror and traps and snares will be your lot,
O Moab,” says the Lord.
44 “Those who flee in terror will fall into a trap,
and those who escape the trap will step into a snare.
I will see to it that you do not get away,
for the time of your judgment has come,”
says the Lord.
45 “The people flee as far as Heshbon
but are unable to go on.
For a fire comes from Heshbon,
King Sihon’s ancient home,
to devour the entire land
with all its rebellious people.

46 “What sorrow awaits you, O people of Moab!
The people of the god Chemosh are destroyed!
Your sons and your daughters
have been taken away as captives.
47 But I will restore the fortunes of Moab
in days to come.
I, the Lord, have spoken!”

This is the end of Jeremiah’s prophecy concerning Moab.

A Message about Ammon

49 This message was given concerning the Ammonites. This is what the Lord says:

“Are there no descendants of Israel
to inherit the land of Gad?
Why are you, who worship Molech,[i]
living in its towns?
In the days to come,” says the Lord,
“I will sound the battle cry against your city of Rabbah.
It will become a desolate heap of ruins,
and the neighboring towns will be burned.
Then Israel will take back the land
you took from her,” says the Lord.

“Cry out, O Heshbon,
for the town of Ai is destroyed.
Weep, O people of Rabbah!
Put on your clothes of mourning.
Weep and wail, hiding in the hedges,
for your god Molech, with his priests and officials,
will be hauled off to distant lands.
You are proud of your fertile valleys,
but they will soon be ruined.
You trusted in your wealth,
you rebellious daughter,
and thought no one could ever harm you.
But look! I will bring terror upon you,”
says the Lord, the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.
“Your neighbors will chase you from your land,
and no one will help your exiles as they flee.
But I will restore the fortunes of the Ammonites
in days to come.
I, the Lord, have spoken.”

Messages about Edom

This message was given concerning Edom. This is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies says:

“Is there no wisdom in Teman?
Is no one left to give wise counsel?
Turn and flee!
Hide in deep caves, you people of Dedan!
For when I bring disaster on Edom,[j]
I will punish you, too!
Those who harvest grapes
always leave a few for the poor.
If thieves came at night,
they would not take everything.
10 But I will strip bare the land of Edom,
and there will be no place left to hide.
Its children, its brothers, and its neighbors
will all be destroyed,
and Edom itself will be no more.
11 But I will protect the orphans who remain among you.
Your widows, too, can depend on me for help.”

12 And this is what the Lord says: “If the innocent must suffer, how much more must you! You will not go unpunished! You must drink this cup of judgment! 13 For I have sworn by my own name,” says the Lord, “that Bozrah will become an object of horror and a heap of ruins; it will be mocked and cursed. All its towns and villages will be desolate forever.”

14 I have heard a message from the Lord
that an ambassador was sent to the nations to say,
“Form a coalition against Edom,
and prepare for battle!”

15 The Lord says to Edom,
“I will cut you down to size among the nations.
You will be despised by all.
16 You have been deceived
by the fear you inspire in others
and by your own pride.
You live in a rock fortress
and control the mountain heights.
But even if you make your nest among the peaks with the eagles,
I will bring you crashing down,”
says the Lord.

17 “Edom will be an object of horror.
All who pass by will be appalled
and will gasp at the destruction they see there.
18 It will be like the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah
and their neighboring towns,” says the Lord.
“No one will live there;
no one will inhabit it.
19 I will come like a lion from the thickets of the Jordan,
leaping on the sheep in the pasture.
I will chase Edom from its land,
and I will appoint the leader of my choice.
For who is like me, and who can challenge me?
What ruler can oppose my will?”

20 Listen to the Lord’s plans against Edom
and the people of Teman.
Even the little children will be dragged off like sheep,
and their homes will be destroyed.
21 The earth will shake with the noise of Edom’s fall,
and its cry of despair will be heard all the way to the Red Sea.[k]
22 Look! The enemy swoops down like an eagle,
spreading his wings over Bozrah.
Even the mightiest warriors will be in anguish
like a woman in labor.

2 Timothy 4

I solemnly urge you in the presence of God and Christ Jesus, who will someday judge the living and the dead when he comes to set up his Kingdom: Preach the word of God. Be prepared, whether the time is favorable or not. Patiently correct, rebuke, and encourage your people with good teaching.

For a time is coming when people will no longer listen to sound and wholesome teaching. They will follow their own desires and will look for teachers who will tell them whatever their itching ears want to hear. They will reject the truth and chase after myths.

But you should keep a clear mind in every situation. Don’t be afraid of suffering for the Lord. Work at telling others the Good News, and fully carry out the ministry God has given you.

As for me, my life has already been poured out as an offering to God. The time of my death is near. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, and I have remained faithful. And now the prize awaits me—the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give me on the day of his return. And the prize is not just for me but for all who eagerly look forward to his appearing.

Paul’s Final Words

Timothy, please come as soon as you can. 10 Demas has deserted me because he loves the things of this life and has gone to Thessalonica. Crescens has gone to Galatia, and Titus has gone to Dalmatia. 11 Only Luke is with me. Bring Mark with you when you come, for he will be helpful to me in my ministry. 12 I sent Tychicus to Ephesus. 13 When you come, be sure to bring the coat I left with Carpus at Troas. Also bring my books, and especially my papers.[a]

14 Alexander the coppersmith did me much harm, but the Lord will judge him for what he has done. 15 Be careful of him, for he fought against everything we said.

16 The first time I was brought before the judge, no one came with me. Everyone abandoned me. May it not be counted against them. 17 But the Lord stood with me and gave me strength so that I might preach the Good News in its entirety for all the Gentiles to hear. And he rescued me from certain death.[b] 18 Yes, and the Lord will deliver me from every evil attack and will bring me safely into his heavenly Kingdom. All glory to God forever and ever! Amen.

Paul’s Final Greetings

19 Give my greetings to Priscilla and Aquila and those living in the household of Onesiphorus. 20 Erastus stayed at Corinth, and I left Trophimus sick at Miletus.

21 Do your best to get here before winter. Eubulus sends you greetings, and so do Pudens, Linus, Claudia, and all the brothers and sisters.[c]

22 May the Lord be with your spirit. And may his grace be with all of you.

Psalm 95-96

Psalm 95

Come, let us sing to the Lord!
Let us shout joyfully to the Rock of our salvation.
Let us come to him with thanksgiving.
Let us sing psalms of praise to him.
For the Lord is a great God,
a great King above all gods.
He holds in his hands the depths of the earth
and the mightiest mountains.
The sea belongs to him, for he made it.
His hands formed the dry land, too.

Come, let us worship and bow down.
Let us kneel before the Lord our maker,
for he is our God.
We are the people he watches over,
the flock under his care.

If only you would listen to his voice today!
The Lord says, “Don’t harden your hearts as Israel did at Meribah,
as they did at Massah in the wilderness.
For there your ancestors tested and tried my patience,
even though they saw everything I did.
10 For forty years I was angry with them, and I said,
‘They are a people whose hearts turn away from me.
They refuse to do what I tell them.’
11 So in my anger I took an oath:
‘They will never enter my place of rest.’”

Psalm 96

Sing a new song to the Lord!
Let the whole earth sing to the Lord!
Sing to the Lord; praise his name.
Each day proclaim the good news that he saves.
Publish his glorious deeds among the nations.
Tell everyone about the amazing things he does.
Great is the Lord! He is most worthy of praise!
He is to be feared above all gods.
The gods of other nations are mere idols,
but the Lord made the heavens!
Honor and majesty surround him;
strength and beauty fill his sanctuary.

O nations of the world, recognize the Lord;
recognize that the Lord is glorious and strong.
Give to the Lord the glory he deserves!
Bring your offering and come into his courts.
Worship the Lord in all his holy splendor.
Let all the earth tremble before him.
10 Tell all the nations, “The Lord reigns!”
The world stands firm and cannot be shaken.
He will judge all peoples fairly.

11 Let the heavens be glad, and the earth rejoice!
Let the sea and everything in it shout his praise!
12 Let the fields and their crops burst out with joy!
Let the trees of the forest sing for joy
13 before the Lord, for he is coming!
He is coming to judge the earth.
He will judge the world with justice,
and the nations with his truth.

Proverbs 26:9-12

A proverb in the mouth of a fool
is like a thorny branch brandished by a drunk.

10 An employer who hires a fool or a bystander
is like an archer who shoots at random.

11 As a dog returns to its vomit,
so a fool repeats his foolishness.

12 There is more hope for fools
than for people who think they are wise.

Jeremiah 44:24-47:7, 2 Timothy 2:22-3:17, Psalm 94:1-23, Proverbs 26:6-8

Today is the 24th day of the month of October, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian and it is a joy and an honor to be here with you today, as we gather and move forward together, day-by-day, step-by-step. And taking the next step forward which leads us to the exact place where we left off yesterday, which leads us back into the book of Jeremiah. And today we will read Jeremiah chapter 44 verse 24 through 47 verse 7 and we’re reading from the New Living Translation this week.

Commentary:

Okay so, in our reading from second Timothy, today we encountered a verse, it’s a famous verse, but it is a verse that, of all of the verses in the Bible, most succinctly describes why it is we come around the Global Campfire every day. And I quote, “All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work”. Paul says this to Timothy, because as a pastor, he’s telling him, you have to be faithful to the text and you have to be true to those who taught it to you. So, Paul, Timothy’s father in the faith, is telling his son in the faith, where he needs to focus his energy, what he needs to embrace, what will bring value to the task that he has of leading God’s people in the congregation. And he’s telling Timothy this because he believes that difficult times are on their way. We talked about that when we began the letters, the pastoral epistles, Paul is imprisoned, he is not likely to get out and he doesn’t. But he knows that he is probably going to die, and this isn’t what he thought when he began the journey, he did not see that it was gonna go this way, but he could see that his life was drawing to a close, and that persecution of the congregations that he had planted, seemed not only inevitable but imminent. So, Paul is helping Timothy to focus his attention on where it belongs so that, he and the congregation are not unprepared for the trials and tribulations and persecutions that seem to be right on the horizon. So, Paul is telling Timothy to press into the Scriptures, press into what he has been taught, press into the people that are true and that he can trust. By contrast, there are things that Timothy should not press into and should indeed avoid. And we too must know and avoid these things. Paul says, people will love only themselves and their money, they will be boastful and proud, scoffing at God, disobedient to their parents and ungrateful. They will consider nothing sacred; they will be unloving and unforgiving. They will slander others and have no self-control, they will be cruel and hate what is good, they will betray their friends, be reckless, be puffed up with pride and love pleasure rather than God. They will act religious, but they will reject the power that could make them godly. Paul tells Timothy, stay away from people like that. So, if we would spend some time in second Timothy, or at least spend some time in meditation today, considering we are being told where the truth lies, what to press into, what to hang onto, no matter what comes our way. And in this case, persecution is literally coming their way. So, Paul is saying, this is what you got a hold onto for dear life. The Scriptures, the message you were taught, those who are true. But he’s also being told what to avoid and we look at those characteristics of what to avoid, we realize, okay that wasn’t just in the first century. These things are totally on display at everywhere in our culture today, people are boastful and proud. There are those who definitely love only themselves and their money, there are definitely those who are ungrateful and those who consider nothing sacred and those who are unloving and forgiving, who will slander others and have no self-control. There are those who are cruel and hate what is good, they will betray their friends. They will be reckless and puffed up with pride and love pleasure rather than God. And indeed, they will act religious, but they will ultimately reject the power that could make them Godly. So, the thing is, we read that list of characteristics and go, yeah, you should stay away from people like that, but we should also realize the Bible will never lead us to be that kind of a person. So, if we’re doing what Paul was saying, understanding the value of the Scriptures, understanding that it teaches us what is true and makes us realize what is wrong, that it corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us how to do what is right and that God is using it to prepare and equip us for every good work. We would understand the Bible never lead us to be selfish and ungrateful and to consider nothing sacred and to not be loyal, to be unloving and unforgiving instead. Being willing to slander other people and having no self-control in our lives, and on and on it goes. The Bible will not lead us on that path. So, let’s remember why we come around the Global Campfire every day. All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip His people to do every good work.

Prayer:

And so, Father, as we do every day, but especially today, we thank You for Your word and what it represents in our lives. And as we look back over this year, we see how the Scriptures have been used to transform us in so many ways, on so many levels, and we open ourselves fully to it, doing exactly what Paul is encouraging Timothy to do, to hold on to what we’ve been taught, to hold on to what is true and to trust in what You are teaching us through Your word. We pray this in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Announcements:

dailyaudiobible.com that is home base, home of the Global Campfire, that is where you find out what’s going on around here, you can also do the same thing by using the Daily Audio Bible app, which you can download from…from whatever app store that you use, so check that out as well. And there are some new things going on around here. In particular, a brand-new resource called Sleep, A Contemplative Journey, will be releasing a week from tomorrow. And this is a resource that I’ve been mentioning at the end, every day here for the last few days, just talking about the story, the need for rest, the need for intentionality around being restful and just how I have had my own challenges in that area, which is part of the inspiration for creating this resource. How do we create a space that is specifically intended to calm us down, to use musical passages that are pleasing and calming and bring a sense of wholeness, to bring Scriptures into the mix, to be spoken over us, words of encouragement, words of rest words, words of hope? And that is what Sleep, A Contemplative Journey is, a journey toward rest. And as we look at the rhythm of any given year, we all kinda know that we are right on the threshold of it getting pretty busy and pretty crazy. And we all kinda know that we’re running around, and our rhythms are disrupted, and our sleep can get scarce and when that happens, any number of anxieties can have free access to steel rest and sleep from us. What if we were intentional about creating space to allow our minds and our hearts to rest and to be bathed in the Scriptures? So, if that sounds like some things that may be a good addition into your toolbox then Sleep, A Contemplative Journey is available for pre-order right now. And so, go grab that from whatever…whatever music store it is that you use to download your music and then it will show up automatically for you on the first day of November. And I look forward to hearing your experience as you navigate towards intentional rest. And so, Sleep, A Contemplative Journey, search for that, search for my name Brian Hardin and you should have no problem finding it, wherever it is that you get your music.

Okay, if you want to partner with the Daily Audio Bible. If the mission that we share to bring the spoken word of God, read fresh every day, offered freely to anyone who will listen, anywhere on this planet, any time of day or night and to build community around the rhythm of showing up around the Global Campfire every day. If that is meaningful, if that is life-giving to you, then thank you, humbly for your partnership. There is a link on the homepage at dailyaudiobible.com. If you’re using the app, you can press the Give button in the upper right-hand corner or the mailing address is P.O. Box 1996 Springhill, Tennessee 37174.

Prayer and Encouragements:

Good evening Daily Audio Bible Community. This is Diane Olive and Jeff Brown on October the 16th 2022 at 10 something at night central time. The reading for today was very poignant to me and I just want to say that how important forgiveness is. Jeremiah, we all need to learn how to forgive from our heart. For none of us deserves what Jesus did for us. But if you forgive and if you repent before him humbly, he will change you. He’s changing me, my husband sees it. I don’t know if other people see it yet, but he sees it. So, Father, I pray, I pray for everybody who has been bullied or hurt and this man was certainly bullied and hurt. And he needed to forgive. And is a terrible thing, it’s terrible what those people did. But Jesus got oh, so much worse than we ever could receive. What yet innocent. So, Father, I pray for everybody who’s ever been bullied or hurt, that they’ll find it in their heart to forgive as Jesus forgives, to love as …

Good morning Daily Audio Bible family this is Jazz from the Bay. I’m calling in to request prayer for myself. December 2021 I was attacked by a very drunken man that I knew and was very close with. And ever since, I mentally, have been messed up. But as soon as that happened, the first thing I did get back into the DAB family and listen every day and that’s the only thing that’s kept me sane, so far. But recently, with the coming on to my one-year anniversary, it’s hard. I can’t sleep, if I do, I’m up every 10/15 minutes, every time I hear a noise, I think it’s this person that I’m actually very, very close with. Since I, who I’ve since forgiven, not for him but for myself. My anxiety is just horrible. And to think that somebody so close to me would do something so bad it hurts, and I don’t know, it’s just a constant fear; if somebody so close to me could do it, what makes me think that somebody else that’s a stranger, wouldn’t do it to me. So, I just ask for prayer. I want to be able to sleep peacefully, I want to be able to not have to fake a smile and fake encourage everybody else, it’s not fake but encourage everybody else. And I’m just so broken. So…

Good morning DAB this is Amber for California. I’ve never called in before, but I heard a prayer today from Widow in Montana, calling about her daughter that’s ran away. And I just related to this so much because I also have teenagers that run away and threaten to kill themselves and stuff like this in the past. And I do want to encourage you that it does get easier, and it does get better. Just keep praying for them and praying that God moves on their hearts and I know they just lost their dad, so that’s probably a huge reason why she’s acting out. I just wanted to let you know that I’ll be praying for you and your children and your daughter. And I pray in Jesus name that she would return home safely and that God would give you peace about the whole situation and all the kids would deal with this grief and pain, of losing their dad. I love you all and I’m praying for you all every day. Have a good day.

Hi DABers, this is Prisoner of Hope calling in to pray for some other DABers. Scottish Tom, you requested prayer for your co-workers; one who lost a grandmother, one who lost everything in a fire and another who lost his father in an accident. Heavenly Father, we just come to You just in brokenness for the tragedies that have struck these people at his work, Lord. I just know that You are the God of all comfort, You are the God who has perfect timing and who see’s everything and You know our hurts and you catch our every tear. I ask that You please bring comfort and healing to all of these people who have lost and their families. Lord, we just know that You are the one that we can turn to, we thank you for that. We thank You for being everything to us. I’m also calling to pray for Kayla, you said you had mitochondrial disease with extremely bad stomach problems, it sounds like. I can’t imagine what that’s like, to be in extreme discomfort each and every day and not finding the relief you need and to suffer with this disease. So, Kayla, I just pray that our Heavenly Father will put His hand on you, that He will bring healing to you. That He will help physicians find what it is you need to find some kind of relief. I just pray for your spirit that you will not be in lowly spirits, that somehow you will still be able to find the joy of the Lord in your life. As He is our strength, it says the joy of the Lord is our strength in, I believe it’s Nehemiah 8: 10. And so, I pray for that. I also pray for this family whose grandchildren were taken, who have been away from their parents and that the father wants them back. I just, Valeria from Arkansas, I am praying for your kids, your grandkids and asking that the will of the Lord be done and that the judge would have wisdom and see what needs to be done. We ask all these in the precious, beautiful name of Jesus. Amen.

Good evening my family, it’s Susan from Canada, God’s Yellow Flower. And yes, it’s evening, I had Bible study this morning and so I’m doing my DAB in the evening, but I’m doing it. So, anyway, I heard Widowed Mom today on todays. And I just need to tell you sweetheart, I was a widow, or I guess I still am, a widowed mom. And but my children were very small, not quite 2 and 3 when their dad passed away. And it’s not easy, I know sweetheart. But you know God provided for me another single mom who was a Christian, or is a Christian, and we were able to sort of blend our families together, spiritually. And oh, it was a God send. So, I’m gonna pray that for you. Lord God, Widowed Mom needs someone to help her with the decisions that she has to make and what she needs to do to know what she needs to do. She needs a good Christian counselor to walk this walk with her. And I pray that You would provide, just like You provided for me. In Jesus name I pray. Amen. And if you would like to contact me through messenger, I’m Susan Jobin, J O B I N. In Belville, Canada, Ontario, Canada. Okay, sweetheart, I know that I will keep praying for you.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Monday October 24, 2022 (NIV)

Jeremiah 44:24-47:7

24 Then Jeremiah said to them all, including the women, “Listen to this message from the Lord, all you citizens of Judah who live in Egypt. 25 This is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, the God of Israel, says: ‘You and your wives have said, “We will keep our promises to burn incense and pour out liquid offerings to the Queen of Heaven,” and you have proved by your actions that you meant it. So go ahead and carry out your promises and vows to her!’

26 “But listen to this message from the Lord, all you Judeans now living in Egypt: ‘I have sworn by my great name,’ says the Lord, ‘that my name will no longer be spoken by any of the Judeans in the land of Egypt. None of you may invoke my name or use this oath: “As surely as the Sovereign Lord lives.” 27 For I will watch over you to bring you disaster and not good. Everyone from Judah who is now living in Egypt will suffer war and famine until all of you are dead. 28 Only a small number will escape death and return to Judah from Egypt. Then all those who came to Egypt will find out whose words are true—mine or theirs!

29 “‘And this is the proof I give you,’ says the Lord, ‘that all I have threatened will happen to you and that I will punish you here.’ 30 This is what the Lord says: ‘I will turn Pharaoh Hophra, king of Egypt, over to his enemies who want to kill him, just as I turned King Zedekiah of Judah over to King Nebuchadnezzar[a] of Babylon.’”

A Message for Baruch

45 The prophet Jeremiah gave a message to Baruch son of Neriah in the fourth year of the reign of Jehoiakim son of Josiah,[b] after Baruch had written down everything Jeremiah had dictated to him. He said, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says to you, Baruch: You have said, ‘I am overwhelmed with trouble! Haven’t I had enough pain already? And now the Lord has added more! I am worn out from sighing and can find no rest.’

“Baruch, this is what the Lord says: ‘I will destroy this nation that I built. I will uproot what I planted. Are you seeking great things for yourself? Don’t do it! I will bring great disaster upon all these people; but I will give you your life as a reward wherever you go. I, the Lord, have spoken!’”

Messages for the Nations

46 The following messages were given to Jeremiah the prophet from the Lord concerning foreign nations.

Messages about Egypt

This message concerning Egypt was given in the fourth year of the reign of Jehoiakim son of Josiah, the king of Judah, on the occasion of the battle of Carchemish[c] when Pharaoh Neco, king of Egypt, and his army were defeated beside the Euphrates River by King Nebuchadnezzar[d] of Babylon.

“Prepare your shields,
and advance into battle!
Harness the horses,
and mount the stallions.
Take your positions.
Put on your helmets.
Sharpen your spears,
and prepare your armor.
But what do I see?
The Egyptian army flees in terror.
The bravest of its fighting men run
without a backward glance.
They are terrorized at every turn,”
says the Lord.
“The swiftest runners cannot flee;
the mightiest warriors cannot escape.
By the Euphrates River to the north,
they stumble and fall.

“Who is this, rising like the Nile at floodtime,
overflowing all the land?
It is the Egyptian army,
overflowing all the land,
boasting that it will cover the earth like a flood,
destroying cities and their people.
Charge, you horses and chariots;
attack, you mighty warriors of Egypt!
Come, all you allies from Ethiopia, Libya, and Lydia[e]
who are skilled with the shield and bow!
10 For this is the day of the Lord, the Lord of Heaven’s Armies,
a day of vengeance on his enemies.
The sword will devour until it is satisfied,
yes, until it is drunk with your blood!
The Lord, the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, will receive a sacrifice today
in the north country beside the Euphrates River.

11 “Go up to Gilead to get medicine,
O virgin daughter of Egypt!
But your many treatments
will bring you no healing.
12 The nations have heard of your shame.
The earth is filled with your cries of despair.
Your mightiest warriors will run into each other
and fall down together.”

13 Then the Lord gave the prophet Jeremiah this message about King Nebuchadnezzar’s plans to attack Egypt.

14 “Shout it out in Egypt!
Publish it in the cities of Migdol, Memphis,[f] and Tahpanhes!
Mobilize for battle,
for the sword will devour everyone around you.
15 Why have your warriors fallen?
They cannot stand, for the Lord has knocked them down.
16 They stumble and fall over each other
and say among themselves,
‘Come, let’s go back to our people,
to the land of our birth.
Let’s get away from the sword of the enemy!’
17 There they will say,
‘Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, is a loudmouth
who missed his opportunity!’

18 “As surely as I live,” says the King,
whose name is the Lord of Heaven’s Armies,
“one is coming against Egypt
who is as tall as Mount Tabor,
or as Mount Carmel by the sea!
19 Pack up! Get ready to leave for exile,
you citizens of Egypt!
The city of Memphis will be destroyed,
without a single inhabitant.
20 Egypt is as sleek as a beautiful heifer,
but a horsefly from the north is on its way!
21 Egypt’s mercenaries have become like fattened calves.
They, too, will turn and run,
for it is a day of great disaster for Egypt,
a time of great punishment.
22 Egypt flees, silent as a serpent gliding away.
The invading army marches in;
they come against her with axes like woodsmen.
23 They will cut down her people like trees,” says the Lord,
“for they are more numerous than locusts.
24 Egypt will be humiliated;
she will be handed over to people from the north.”

25 The Lord of Heaven’s Armies, the God of Israel, says: “I will punish Amon, the god of Thebes,[g] and all the other gods of Egypt. I will punish its rulers and Pharaoh, too, and all who trust in him. 26 I will hand them over to those who want them killed—to King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon and his army. But afterward the land will recover from the ravages of war. I, the Lord, have spoken!

27 “But do not be afraid, Jacob, my servant;
do not be dismayed, Israel.
For I will bring you home again from distant lands,
and your children will return from their exile.
Israel[h] will return to a life of peace and quiet,
and no one will terrorize them.
28 Do not be afraid, Jacob, my servant,
for I am with you,” says the Lord.
“I will completely destroy the nations to which I have exiled you,
but I will not completely destroy you.
I will discipline you, but with justice;
I cannot let you go unpunished.”

A Message about Philistia

47 This is the Lord’s message to the prophet Jeremiah concerning the Philistines of Gaza, before it was captured by the Egyptian army. This is what the Lord says:

“A flood is coming from the north
to overflow the land.
It will destroy the land and everything in it—
cities and people alike.
People will scream in terror,
and everyone in the land will wail.
Hear the clatter of stallions’ hooves
and the rumble of wheels as the chariots rush by.
Terrified fathers run madly,
without a backward glance at their helpless children.

“The time has come for the Philistines to be destroyed,
along with their allies from Tyre and Sidon.
Yes, the Lord is destroying the remnant of the Philistines,
those colonists from the island of Crete.[i]
Gaza will be humiliated, its head shaved bald;
Ashkelon will lie silent.
You remnant from the Mediterranean coast,[j]
how long will you cut yourselves in mourning?

“Now, O sword of the Lord,
when will you be at rest again?
Go back into your sheath;
rest and be still.

“But how can it be still
when the Lord has sent it on a mission?
For the city of Ashkelon
and the people living along the sea
must be destroyed.”

2 Timothy 2:22-3:17

22 Run from anything that stimulates youthful lusts. Instead, pursue righteous living, faithfulness, love, and peace. Enjoy the companionship of those who call on the Lord with pure hearts.

23 Again I say, don’t get involved in foolish, ignorant arguments that only start fights. 24 A servant of the Lord must not quarrel but must be kind to everyone, be able to teach, and be patient with difficult people. 25 Gently instruct those who oppose the truth. Perhaps God will change those people’s hearts, and they will learn the truth. 26 Then they will come to their senses and escape from the devil’s trap. For they have been held captive by him to do whatever he wants.

The Dangers of the Last Days

You should know this, Timothy, that in the last days there will be very difficult times. For people will love only themselves and their money. They will be boastful and proud, scoffing at God, disobedient to their parents, and ungrateful. They will consider nothing sacred. They will be unloving and unforgiving; they will slander others and have no self-control. They will be cruel and hate what is good. They will betray their friends, be reckless, be puffed up with pride, and love pleasure rather than God. They will act religious, but they will reject the power that could make them godly. Stay away from people like that!

They are the kind who work their way into people’s homes and win the confidence of[a] vulnerable women who are burdened with the guilt of sin and controlled by various desires. (Such women are forever following new teachings, but they are never able to understand the truth.) These teachers oppose the truth just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses. They have depraved minds and a counterfeit faith. But they won’t get away with this for long. Someday everyone will recognize what fools they are, just as with Jannes and Jambres.

Paul’s Charge to Timothy

10 But you, Timothy, certainly know what I teach, and how I live, and what my purpose in life is. You know my faith, my patience, my love, and my endurance. 11 You know how much persecution and suffering I have endured. You know all about how I was persecuted in Antioch, Iconium, and Lystra—but the Lord rescued me from all of it. 12 Yes, and everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution. 13 But evil people and impostors will flourish. They will deceive others and will themselves be deceived.

14 But you must remain faithful to the things you have been taught. You know they are true, for you know you can trust those who taught you. 15 You have been taught the holy Scriptures from childhood, and they have given you the wisdom to receive the salvation that comes by trusting in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. 17 God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.

Psalm 94

Psalm 94

O Lord, the God of vengeance,
O God of vengeance, let your glorious justice shine forth!
Arise, O Judge of the earth.
Give the proud what they deserve.
How long, O Lord?
How long will the wicked be allowed to gloat?
How long will they speak with arrogance?
How long will these evil people boast?
They crush your people, Lord,
hurting those you claim as your own.
They kill widows and foreigners
and murder orphans.
“The Lord isn’t looking,” they say,
“and besides, the God of Israel[a] doesn’t care.”

Think again, you fools!
When will you finally catch on?
Is he deaf—the one who made your ears?
Is he blind—the one who formed your eyes?
10 He punishes the nations—won’t he also punish you?
He knows everything—doesn’t he also know what you are doing?
11 The Lord knows people’s thoughts;
he knows they are worthless!

12 Joyful are those you discipline, Lord,
those you teach with your instructions.
13 You give them relief from troubled times
until a pit is dug to capture the wicked.
14 The Lord will not reject his people;
he will not abandon his special possession.
15 Judgment will again be founded on justice,
and those with virtuous hearts will pursue it.

16 Who will protect me from the wicked?
Who will stand up for me against evildoers?
17 Unless the Lord had helped me,
I would soon have settled in the silence of the grave.
18 I cried out, “I am slipping!”
but your unfailing love, O Lord, supported me.
19 When doubts filled my mind,
your comfort gave me renewed hope and cheer.

20 Can unjust leaders claim that God is on their side—
leaders whose decrees permit injustice?
21 They gang up against the righteous
and condemn the innocent to death.
22 But the Lord is my fortress;
my God is the mighty rock where I hide.
23 God will turn the sins of evil people back on them.
He will destroy them for their sins.
The Lord our God will destroy them.

Proverbs 26:6-8

Trusting a fool to convey a message
is like cutting off one’s feet or drinking poison!

A proverb in the mouth of a fool
is as useless as a paralyzed leg.

Honoring a fool
is as foolish as tying a stone to a slingshot.

Jeremiah 42:1-44:23, 2 Timothy 2:1-21, Psalms 92:1-93:5, Proverbs 26:3-5

Today is the 23rd day of October welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I am Brian and it’s wonderful to be here with you as we greet a brand-new shiny sparkly week, the last full week of the month of October. Crazy, but it’s true. And, so, that’s where we find ourselves. This week we will read from the New Living Translation. And we have been working our way through the book of Jeremiah, which is what we’ll continue to do. We’ll actually finish up the book of Jeremiah before this final week of the month is out. And, so, let’s dive in and pick up where we left off yesterday. Jeremiah chapter 42 verse 1 through 44 verse 23.

Prayer:

Father, we thank you for your word and we thank you for every day that we get to spend together, pouring over it, feasting upon it, being lead and informed by it and by the leading of your Holy Spirit in our lives. Thank you for bringing us into this final week of this month, final full week of this month and we look forward to all that is yet before us. Come Holy Spirit as we walk into this shiny sparkly week and lead us in the ways of truth we pray. In Jesus’ name, we ask. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hey family this is Jonathan from Denver it is the 19th of October today. I just wanted to put out a prayer for my brother Renzo. I heard your prayer request a while ago. I’m way behind, like three weeks behind on the Daily Audio Bible but plugging through it and enjoying hearing all the prayers and everything. But I just heard your prayer request a while ago about the transition that you’re in and moving into a different season of life and that is I know awesome and terrifying. But I just wanted to encourage you and tell you that you are already an incredible brother in Christ. You are doing good things and whatever this next season looks like for you Jesus will carry you through it. And I am honored to have a brother in Christ that’s as caring, as consistent as you. And I know that you’re going to do great things in your music and in your life. So, stay encouraged and I’ll see you all later period love you.

Hi guys it is October 17th. I’m Winter and I have a praise report as well as a prayer request. Praise report. So, I’ve been praying over my friend Pink who severely…she’s…she’s severely going through a time now of depression and she’s not a Christian. But I fasted for about a day and just under ½ and prayed…prayed at the end of that day and God pretty much just told me it was going to be OK. So, I think she’ll probably go to Christ someday and that’s such an exciting thought. I might as well share it with you all. I’m excited for that day to come. But for the prayer request my friend Dave, she…she texted my friend Pink that she was just hurting all over and then she just stopped answering everything. The last time this happened, something similar like this happened she tried to commit suicide. So, please just pray for her. I don’t know where she is right now and she’s an online friend so I can’t really just, you know, fly across the United States to go see her. But please just pray for her. Alright, thank you guys. I'll…I’ll pray with you all later.

Hi DABbers, this is Slave of Jesus in North Carolina. All right holy roller…Holy Spirit let's…let’s roll. Shawn Rogers…I think it was Shawn Rogers, I think that’s your name from London England who’s battling drinking. I love you calling in with your scriptures. And you mentioned Isaiah 40:31. That is…I call that my energy mix scripture. Whenever I feel tired or feel like I’m getting kind of woozy I say that scripture out loud and bam I get some energy. So, I highly encourage you to go out there and find a scripture that is gonna help you fight this drinking problem, a specific one. Maybe you go to Bible Gateway, type in the word drink or drunk. There’s a bunch in there. And what will pop out for you, it’s called Rama. And you…hey…you wanna talk about memorizing scripture. That’s great. But you want to say this stuff out loud. And, so, the Bible talks about saying scripture out loud every morning, every night, and then every time you’re tempted. So, I encourage you to grab that scripture that’s for you about drinking. Say it in the morning, say it at the night. Hey maybe while you’re drinking you say it. Even if you call that a victory because you only have one, make sure you say that scripture out loud and I promise you you will start to feel less and less draw towards drinking because that scripture is your weapon. Man, even if you go and quote UN quote fail and go on a bender, say that scripture out loud because what you’re doing is you’re letting the evil spirits around you know, oh my God this…this guy knows Jesus Christ. He knows how to fight us. And I…I might not be able to…I’m gonna go find that guy across the street that doesn’t know Jesus that doesn’t know how to use scripture weapons. Highly encourage you to do that and you will find you will have more victories than defeats if you say those scriptures out loud that are specific to what you’re fighting. Specifically, because you’re asked about drinking. Love you brother.

Hey Brian, it’s almost 3:00 AM and I was listening to your podcast where you were talking about the launching of the Rest. So, I went on and I pre-ordered that and I took a chance, and I ordered Heart. Oh, my goodness Brian. That was exactly what I needed. The Lord has been waking me up every night around this time and that…listening to that heart of yours, it was exactly what I need because it put it in…in your mouth the words that I had and my heart. Thank you so much for that Brian. I wanna thank you and Jill for all the wonderful things that you have done in my life. All those years I remember so vividly when you lost your mom and I cried with you. And I thank you and I bless you and I encourage you. Thank you so much for your vulnerability. You and your family are, you know, amazing. Thank you, my brother. God bless you and keep moving on. Thank you.

Jeremiah 42:1-44:23

Warning to Stay in Judah

42 Then all the military leaders, including Johanan son of Kareah and Jezaniah[a] son of Hoshaiah, and all the people, from the least to the greatest, approached Jeremiah the prophet. They said, “Please pray to the Lord your God for us. As you can see, we are only a tiny remnant compared to what we were before. Pray that the Lord your God will show us what to do and where to go.”

“All right,” Jeremiah replied. “I will pray to the Lord your God, as you have asked, and I will tell you everything he says. I will hide nothing from you.”

Then they said to Jeremiah, “May the Lord your God be a faithful witness against us if we refuse to obey whatever he tells us to do! Whether we like it or not, we will obey the Lord our God to whom we are sending you with our plea. For if we obey him, everything will turn out well for us.”

Ten days later the Lord gave his reply to Jeremiah. So he called for Johanan son of Kareah and the other military leaders, and for all the people, from the least to the greatest. He said to them, “You sent me to the Lord, the God of Israel, with your request, and this is his reply: 10 ‘Stay here in this land. If you do, I will build you up and not tear you down; I will plant you and not uproot you. For I am sorry about all the punishment I have had to bring upon you. 11 Do not fear the king of Babylon anymore,’ says the Lord. ‘For I am with you and will save you and rescue you from his power. 12 I will be merciful to you by making him kind, so he will let you stay here in your land.’

13 “But if you refuse to obey the Lord your God, and if you say, ‘We will not stay here; 14 instead, we will go to Egypt where we will be free from war, the call to arms, and hunger,’ 15 then hear the Lord’s message to the remnant of Judah. This is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, the God of Israel, says: ‘If you are determined to go to Egypt and live there, 16 the very war and famine you fear will catch up to you, and you will die there. 17 That is the fate awaiting every one of you who insists on going to live in Egypt. Yes, you will die from war, famine, and disease. None of you will escape the disaster I will bring upon you there.’

18 “This is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, the God of Israel, says: ‘Just as my anger and fury have been poured out on the people of Jerusalem, so they will be poured out on you when you enter Egypt. You will be an object of damnation, horror, cursing, and mockery. And you will never see your homeland again.’

19 “Listen, you remnant of Judah. The Lord has told you: ‘Do not go to Egypt!’ Don’t forget this warning I have given you today. 20 For you were not being honest when you sent me to pray to the Lord your God for you. You said, ‘Just tell us what the Lord our God says, and we will do it!’ 21 And today I have told you exactly what he said, but you will not obey the Lord your God any better now than you have in the past. 22 So you can be sure that you will die from war, famine, and disease in Egypt, where you insist on going.”

Jeremiah Taken to Egypt

43 When Jeremiah had finished giving this message from the Lord their God to all the people, Azariah son of Hoshaiah and Johanan son of Kareah and all the other proud men said to Jeremiah, “You lie! The Lord our God hasn’t forbidden us to go to Egypt! Baruch son of Neriah has convinced you to say this, because he wants us to stay here and be killed by the Babylonians[b] or be carried off into exile.”

So Johanan and the other military leaders and all the people refused to obey the Lord’s command to stay in Judah. Johanan and the other leaders took with them all the people who had returned from the nearby countries to which they had fled. In the crowd were men, women, and children, the king’s daughters, and all those whom Nebuzaradan, the captain of the guard, had left with Gedaliah. The prophet Jeremiah and Baruch were also included. The people refused to obey the voice of the Lord and went to Egypt, going as far as the city of Tahpanhes.

Then at Tahpanhes, the Lord gave another message to Jeremiah. He said, “While the people of Judah are watching, take some large rocks and bury them under the pavement stones at the entrance of Pharaoh’s palace here in Tahpanhes. 10 Then say to the people of Judah, ‘This is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, the God of Israel, says: I will certainly bring my servant Nebuchadnezzar,[c] king of Babylon, here to Egypt. I will set his throne over these stones that I have hidden. He will spread his royal canopy over them. 11 And when he comes, he will destroy the land of Egypt. He will bring death to those destined for death, captivity to those destined for captivity, and war to those destined for war. 12 He will set fire to the temples of Egypt’s gods; he will burn the temples and carry the idols away as plunder. He will pick clean the land of Egypt as a shepherd picks fleas from his cloak. And he himself will leave unharmed. 13 He will break down the sacred pillars standing in the temple of the sun[d] in Egypt, and he will burn down the temples of Egypt’s gods.’”

Judgment for Idolatry

44 This is the message Jeremiah received concerning the Judeans living in northern Egypt in the cities of Migdol, Tahpanhes, and Memphis,[e] and in southern Egypt[f] as well: “This is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, the God of Israel, says: You saw the calamity I brought on Jerusalem and all the towns of Judah. They now lie deserted and in ruins. They provoked my anger with all their wickedness. They burned incense and worshiped other gods—gods that neither they nor you nor any of your ancestors had ever even known.

“Again and again I sent my servants, the prophets, to plead with them, ‘Don’t do these horrible things that I hate so much.’ But my people would not listen or turn back from their wicked ways. They kept on burning incense to these gods. And so my fury boiled over and fell like fire on the towns of Judah and into the streets of Jerusalem, and they are still a desolate ruin today.

“And now the Lord God of Heaven’s Armies, the God of Israel, asks you: Why are you destroying yourselves? For not one of you will survive—not a man, woman, or child among you who has come here from Judah, not even the babies in your arms. Why provoke my anger by burning incense to the idols you have made here in Egypt? You will only destroy yourselves and make yourselves an object of cursing and mockery for all the nations of the earth. Have you forgotten the sins of your ancestors, the sins of the kings and queens of Judah, and the sins you and your wives committed in Judah and Jerusalem? 10 To this very hour you have shown no remorse or reverence. No one has chosen to follow my word and the decrees I gave to you and your ancestors before you.

11 “Therefore, this is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, the God of Israel, says: I am determined to destroy every one of you! 12 I will take this remnant of Judah—those who were determined to come here and live in Egypt—and I will consume them. They will fall here in Egypt, killed by war and famine. All will die, from the least to the greatest. They will be an object of damnation, horror, cursing, and mockery. 13 I will punish them in Egypt just as I punished them in Jerusalem, by war, famine, and disease. 14 Of that remnant who fled to Egypt, hoping someday to return to Judah, there will be no survivors. Even though they long to return home, only a handful will do so.”

15 Then all the women present and all the men who knew that their wives had burned incense to idols—a great crowd of all the Judeans living in northern Egypt and southern Egypt[g]—answered Jeremiah, 16 “We will not listen to your messages from the Lord! 17 We will do whatever we want. We will burn incense and pour out liquid offerings to the Queen of Heaven just as much as we like—just as we, and our ancestors, and our kings and officials have always done in the towns of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem. For in those days we had plenty to eat, and we were well off and had no troubles! 18 But ever since we quit burning incense to the Queen of Heaven and stopped worshiping her with liquid offerings, we have been in great trouble and have been dying from war and famine.”

19 “Besides,” the women added, “do you suppose that we were burning incense and pouring out liquid offerings to the Queen of Heaven, and making cakes marked with her image, without our husbands knowing it and helping us? Of course not!”

20 Then Jeremiah said to all of them, men and women alike, who had given him that answer, 21 “Do you think the Lord did not know that you and your ancestors, your kings and officials, and all the people were burning incense to idols in the towns of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem? 22 It was because the Lord could no longer bear all the disgusting things you were doing that he made your land an object of cursing—a desolate ruin without inhabitants—as it is today. 23 All these terrible things happened to you because you have burned incense to idols and sinned against the Lord. You have refused to obey him and have not followed his instructions, his decrees, and his laws.”

2 Timothy 2:1-21

A Good Soldier of Christ Jesus

Timothy, my dear son, be strong through the grace that God gives you in Christ Jesus. You have heard me teach things that have been confirmed by many reliable witnesses. Now teach these truths to other trustworthy people who will be able to pass them on to others.

Endure suffering along with me, as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. Soldiers don’t get tied up in the affairs of civilian life, for then they cannot please the officer who enlisted them. And athletes cannot win the prize unless they follow the rules. And hardworking farmers should be the first to enjoy the fruit of their labor. Think about what I am saying. The Lord will help you understand all these things.

Always remember that Jesus Christ, a descendant of King David, was raised from the dead. This is the Good News I preach. And because I preach this Good News, I am suffering and have been chained like a criminal. But the word of God cannot be chained. 10 So I am willing to endure anything if it will bring salvation and eternal glory in Christ Jesus to those God has chosen.

11 This is a trustworthy saying:

If we die with him,
we will also live with him.
12 If we endure hardship,
we will reign with him.
If we deny him,
he will deny us.
13 If we are unfaithful,
he remains faithful,
for he cannot deny who he is.

14 Remind everyone about these things, and command them in God’s presence to stop fighting over words. Such arguments are useless, and they can ruin those who hear them.

An Approved Worker

15 Work hard so you can present yourself to God and receive his approval. Be a good worker, one who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly explains the word of truth. 16 Avoid worthless, foolish talk that only leads to more godless behavior. 17 This kind of talk spreads like cancer,[a] as in the case of Hymenaeus and Philetus. 18 They have left the path of truth, claiming that the resurrection of the dead has already occurred; in this way, they have turned some people away from the faith.

19 But God’s truth stands firm like a foundation stone with this inscription: “The Lord knows those who are his,”[b] and “All who belong to the Lord must turn away from evil.”[c]

20 In a wealthy home some utensils are made of gold and silver, and some are made of wood and clay. The expensive utensils are used for special occasions, and the cheap ones are for everyday use. 21 If you keep yourself pure, you will be a special utensil for honorable use. Your life will be clean, and you will be ready for the Master to use you for every good work.

Psalm 92-93

Psalm 92

A psalm. A song to be sung on the Sabbath Day.

It is good to give thanks to the Lord,
to sing praises to the Most High.
It is good to proclaim your unfailing love in the morning,
your faithfulness in the evening,
accompanied by a ten-stringed instrument, a harp,
and the melody of a lyre.

You thrill me, Lord, with all you have done for me!
I sing for joy because of what you have done.
O Lord, what great works you do!
And how deep are your thoughts.
Only a simpleton would not know,
and only a fool would not understand this:
Though the wicked sprout like weeds
and evildoers flourish,
they will be destroyed forever.

But you, O Lord, will be exalted forever.
Your enemies, Lord, will surely perish;
all evildoers will be scattered.
10 But you have made me as strong as a wild ox.
You have anointed me with the finest oil.
11 My eyes have seen the downfall of my enemies;
my ears have heard the defeat of my wicked opponents.
12 But the godly will flourish like palm trees
and grow strong like the cedars of Lebanon.
13 For they are transplanted to the Lord’s own house.
They flourish in the courts of our God.
14 Even in old age they will still produce fruit;
they will remain vital and green.
15 They will declare, “The Lord is just!
He is my rock!
There is no evil in him!”

Psalm 93

The Lord is king! He is robed in majesty.
Indeed, the Lord is robed in majesty and armed with strength.
The world stands firm
and cannot be shaken.

Your throne, O Lord, has stood from time immemorial.
You yourself are from the everlasting past.
The floods have risen up, O Lord.
The floods have roared like thunder;
the floods have lifted their pounding waves.
But mightier than the violent raging of the seas,
mightier than the breakers on the shore—
the Lord above is mightier than these!
Your royal laws cannot be changed.
Your reign, O Lord, is holy forever and ever.

Proverbs 26:3-5

Guide a horse with a whip, a donkey with a bridle,
and a fool with a rod to his back!

Don’t answer the foolish arguments of fools,
or you will become as foolish as they are.

Be sure to answer the foolish arguments of fools,
or they will become wise in their own estimation.

Jeremiah 39:1-41:18, 2 Timothy 1:1-18, Psalm 90:1-91:16, Proverbs 26:1-2

Today is the 22nd day of October, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian and it’s always wonderful to be here with you. So, it’s wonderful now for us to have a place together around the Global Campfire and take the next step forward. Our next step forward, leads us back into the book of Jeremiah in the Old Testament, and then we get to the New Testament, we will move forward in the pastoral epistles. We concluded first Timothy yesterday. And so, we will begin second Timothy today and we’ll talk about second Timothy when we get there. But first Jeremiah chapters 39, 40 and 41 today.

Introduction into the Book of Second Timothy:

Okay, so now we have come to the book, or the letter known as second Timothy, having completed first Timothy yesterday. And second Timothy, notwithstanding the scholarly controversies that have been going on a long time about the pastoral epistles and who wrote them, this letter is written as if it were written by Paul to his son in the faith Timothy, and it appears this is the last thing he ever wrote. He knows now, Paul is back in prison, he’s not being treated well, he knows he’s about to die, very likely, short of a miracle. And we can read that gravity, as we read the letter. So, just remembering, Timothy is a son in the faith to the apostle Paul. Timothy at this time, was the pastor of the church in Ephesus. Paul looked at Timothy as a son, a son in the faith. Now Paul had been under arrest previously, he appealed to Caesar, but it appears he was able to have freedom and was released from custody and traveled once more. And probably, during that last bit of travel, is when the pastoral epistles of first Timothy, second Timothy and Titus were written. But then, Paul was arrested again, with the new Emperor. He was incarcerated under Emperor Nero. And Emperor Nero is historically a pretty bad guy, at least if you’re looking at from a Christian perspective. He was savage to the Christians and inventing just terrible ways to torture people. Like we’ve heard of Roman candles, but this is like to dip somebody in a flammable material, and kind of impale them on up a pole and then set them on fire and make them a human candlelight. Like, lighting roadways, that kind of craziness, that kind of like, who sits down and thinks this awful stuff up, sort of thing. This is when Nero was notorious for during his reign and there’s plenty more, you can search for Nero and find out all about it is if that’s what you want to do. But Paul is incarcerated again, and he is not likely to get a favorable judgment. So, just knowing that and ironically in Rome, there is sort of like the Imperial dungeon, and the dungeon that it is thought that Paul had spent some time in actually, that Peter spent some time in as well. But that Paul, like this is what we’re talking about, this is where Paul was, and I have stood in that dungeon and there’s not a lot of room. I’ve imagined dungeons in my mind, reading the Bible since I was a kid. This was all of that, dark dank, small, zero conveniences you know, no HVAC, no furnace. So, however, it is outside, it’s how it’s going to be in the dungeon, if not worse. Paul talks about that in second Timothy, he wants his coat, he wants his parchments, like there’s so much personal stuff in this letter, that is so bittersweet, to begin to understand what we’re waiting here is thought to be the last letter of Paul. Understanding all that we’ve learned about Paul and all that we’ve gone through with Paul. So, to reach the end, to sort of realize Paul sure would love to see his son again, his son in the faith, he’d sure love to see Timothy again, if it’s possible in any sort of way. If Timothy can get there, if a miracle happens, if he could see him again, that would be really, really wonderful. But for Paul to be sitting in the dungeon, writing a letter that may very well be the last things he gets to say to Timothy, because the timing may not work out and they may never see each other again. That gives us a perspective from which to read this letter. And it wasn’t right, Christians were basically become scapegoats, they were marginalized, and Nero was a lot of, had a lot to do with that marginalizing the Christians and blaming them for things and stereotyping them in such a way that it was looked like they were anti-Roman, they were against the Empire and so persecution had broken out. And Paul is probably not getting out of jail and as we know he doesn’t. And for Paul to be incarcerated, awaiting trial, awaiting likely execution, meant not only that Paul was gonna die, but it also meant that he was gonna have to leave the churches that he planted and the people that he loved. And persecution was truly breaking out, so he would be gone, and they would have to face the persecutions that were descending upon Christian people. So, he tells Timothy to be awake, to be vigilant, to stay true to his faith, to stay true no matter what happens. But this is also the letter where Paul, reflecting upon his own life, says something very famous, that he had fought the good fight of faith and finished the race. And so, with that, we begin; second Timothy chapter 1.

Prayer:

Thank You Father for Your word. Thank You for bringing us safely and successfully through another week to spend together around the Global Campfire. Thank You for bringing us into this territory of second Timothy, may we consider it with deep gravity and allow it to encourage and instruct us. Come, Holy Spirit, and lead us into all truth. We ask this expectantly, knowing that You will, in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Announcements:

dailyaudiobible.com that is home base, home of the Global Campfire. It’s where you find out what’s going on around here, unless you’re using the Daily Audio Bible app, and that will also tell you what’s going on around here, in the palm of your hand. So, check that out. I have been mentioning this week and told the whole story earlier this week, about a brand-new resource that is coming in just a little over a week on the first day of November. A brand-new resource called Sleep, A Contemplative Journey, will release. And this is part two, that began with Heart, A Contemplative Journey and now Sleep, A Contemplative Journey. And this is the first project I’ve been able to mix using spatial audio or Dolby Atmos and I really wanted to do that. Like I was planning to do that as a plan for this project out, because I really felt like creating a very large, wide, spacious, a warm atmosphere for our rest, which would be appropriate, and it is really beautiful. It is a very lovely space to be in and so that has been very enjoyable although there are a bunch of technical hoops to jump through to kind of sort that out. It is what it needs to be. So, this will be coming on 1 November, but it is available for preorder now, just go to whatever, wherever it is that you get your music and search for Sleep, A Contemplative Journey, or search for my name or whatever, and you should be able to find it and preorder it. And I am very much looking forward to hearing your sleep stories. So, go check that out wherever you get your music.

If you want to partner with the Daily Audio Bible. Thank you, humbly, we would not, we would not be here if we were not in this together and so thank you, profoundly for your partnership. There is a link on the homepage at dailyaudiobible.com. If you’re using the app, you can press the Give button in the upper right-hand corner or the mailing address is P.O. And as always, if you have a prayer request or encouragement, you can hit the Hotline button in the app, that is the little red button up at the top or you can dial 877-942-4253.

And that’s it for today, I’m Brian, I love you and I’ll be waiting for you here, tomorrow.

Prayer and Encouragements:

I am Grateful Gracie from Montana. I’m so pleased to be a member of the DAB family. I don’t call in much, I do listen to the prayers and requests and I just, I don’t know what to say except thank you all for your blessings very much. I’m an old lady and I can’t get my words straight. But God bless you all and my joy is in heaven. Hope to see you there, love you.

Hi, I’ve lived most of my life in addiction. And for about 20 years, I thought that if I would work at a church, that that might help me to overcome my addiction. So, I spent a little over 20 years as a lay minister or a teacher in the churches. And but all that did was lead to me living a dual life. And that dual life became unmanageable about 5 years ago. So, I left the church. The consequences of my addiction and poor choices, led to my arrest and subsequent conviction. While I was in jail, Papa came and sat with me and reframed everything I thought I knew about Him and our faith. Instead of prison, I was gratefully given 10 years of probation and I’ll be 69 years old when I’m finished. As a part of recovery, I wanted to listen to the Bible every day and I found the DAB. The terms of probation make it very difficult for me to go to church or to attend a church. So, my community became a 12 step programs. But when I began to listen to the prayers of the DAB, I found my home church. And I pray for each and every one of you. My spirit is full, and I am well, I’m good. And I have the rush of God that I’ve ever had in my entire life. The one thing that’s been missing for me is a full night’s sleep and I have been praying for the answer. And when I heard Brian’s announcement today, I knew that Papa was answering my prayers. So, thanks to each of you for being a part of my life. And thank you Brian for these resources that you share with us. I am grateful in Tennessee.

Good morning DAB family. This is God’s Little Mud Petal from Maryland. I’m calling for my nephew Jacob. He’s been struggling, trying to sleep and been having really bad dreams. So, as Brian was talking about struggling with sleep, I thought to bring Jacob before you guys and ask that you would just pray for him, that he would have dreams of growing to meet Jesus as Lord and Savior. And he will find rest in the loving arms of Christ. I thank you for your prayers for him. I thank you that you are willing to take the time to lift him up. Thank you.

Hello DAB family it’s your girl Val here in Vegas. I love you, I love you, I love you. Hey, please keep up the prayers, it’s working. Oh, God, I’m expecting a great testimony about my healing ya’ll, my range of motion is increasing, the physical therapy is working, praise God. And speaking of prayer, let’s go after it. That’s what we do here. And family, let’s not just be a family that prays together, and I don’t mean to say “just”, we need to be a family that prays together. Let’s be a family that gives together. Giving to this ministry, our talents, our tithe and our resources. And we thank You Father. God, right now, we want to pray for Mr. Brian Hardin, Lord. Thank You for the vision that You’ve given him, Lord. And thank You that You give him the strength to execute, Lord, thank You, thank You, thank You. As I thank about our word Rooted, Lord, and how rooted in the Word, I have been this year, Lord. And I have to say thank you to this ministry, Father. God, protect him. Lord, continue to give him the style and grace to read the word to us every single day, Lord. Build him up Lord. Whatever he may feel that he’s lacking, God, let his cup overflow, Heavenly Father. God, bless, not only him and the ministry but, Lord, his family. Anyone attached to Brian wins Lord. Thank You Heavenly Father, thank You Lord Jesus. God, thank You for the ability to tithe to this ministry, God, it means so much to me. Lord, provide everything that they need, Lord, in abundance, Heavenly Father. God, I’m sure that if you bless him, they’ll be a blessing to someone else, Lord. So, let it flow Father, let it flow, let it flow, let it flow. I love you all and I’ll see you next month. Stay rooted. Stay strong. We’re just so close to the end. We can do it. In Jesus name, I know we can do it family. I love you all so much. I’ll see you next month.

Jeremiah 39-41

The Fall of Jerusalem(A)

39 In the ninth year of Zedekiah king of Judah, in the tenth month, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and all his army came against Jerusalem and besieged it. In the eleventh year of Zedekiah, in the fourth month, the ninth day of the month, the city wall was broken up. All the officials of the king of Babylon entered and sat in the Middle Gate: Nergal-Sharezer, Samgar-Nebo, Sarsekim the Rabsaris[a] Nergal-Sharezer the Rabmag,[b] and all the rest of the officials of the king of Babylon. When Zedekiah the king of Judah saw them and all the men of war, then they fled and went out of the city by night, by way of the king’s garden, by the gate between the two walls. And he went out the way of the Arabah.

But the Chaldeans’ army pursued after them and overtook Zedekiah in the plains of Jericho. And when they had taken him, they brought him up to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon to Riblah in the land of Hamath, where he passed sentence on him. Then the king of Babylon slew the sons of Zedekiah in Riblah before his eyes. Moreover, the king of Babylon slew all the nobles of Judah. He also put out Zedekiah’s eyes and bound him with chains to carry him to Babylon.

The Chaldeans burned the king’s house and the houses of the people with fire and broke down the walls of Jerusalem. Then Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard carried away captive into Babylon the remnant of the people who remained in the city, and those who fell away, who fell to him, with the rest of the people who remained. 10 But Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard left behind in the land of Judah the poor people who had nothing, and gave them vineyards and fields at that time.

The Lord Delivers Jeremiah

11 Now Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon gave charge concerning Jeremiah to Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard, saying, 12 “Take him and look after him, and do not harm him. But do to him just as he says to you.” 13 So Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard, Nebushazban the Rabsaris, Nergal-Sharezer the Rabmag, and all the chief officers of the king of Babylon 14 sent and took Jeremiah out of the court of the prison and committed him to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, that he should take him home. So he lived among the people.

15 Now the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah while he was shut up in the court of the prison, saying: 16 Go and speak to Ebed-Melek the Ethiopian, saying: Thus says the Lord of Hosts, the God of Israel: I will bring My words upon this city for harm and not for good. And they shall be accomplished in that day before you. 17 But I will deliver you in that day, says the Lord, and you shall not be given into the hand of the men of whom you are afraid. 18 For I will surely deliver you, and you will not fall by the sword; but your life will be as plunder to you, because you have put your trust in Me, says the Lord.

Jeremiah With Gedaliah the Governor

40 The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord after Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard had let him go from Ramah, when he had taken him bound in chains among all who were carried away captive of Jerusalem and Judah who were being carried away captive to Babylon. The captain of the guard had taken Jeremiah, and said to him: “The Lord your God has pronounced this disaster upon this place. And the Lord has brought it and done according as He has said. Because you have sinned against the Lord, and have not obeyed His voice, therefore this thing has come upon you. Now look, I am loosening you this day from the chains which are on your hands. If it seems good to you to come with me to Babylon, come and I will look well after you. But if it seems bad to you to come with me into Babylon, never mind. See, all the land is before you. Go wherever it seems good and right for you to go.” Now while he was not yet going back, he said, “Go back also to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, whom the king of Babylon has made governor over the cities of Judah, and dwell with him among the people. Or go wherever it seems right for you to go.”

So the captain of the guard gave him rations and a gift and let him go. Then Jeremiah went to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam to Mizpah and lived with him among the people who were left in the land.

Gedaliah Is Assassinated(B)

Now all the captains of the forces which were in the fields, they and their men, heard that the king of Babylon had made Gedaliah the son of Ahikam governor in the land and had committed men to him, and women, and children, and some of the poorest of the land who were not carried away captive to Babylon. Then they came to Gedaliah to Mizpah, even Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and Johanan and Jonathan the sons of Kareah, and Seraiah the son of Tanhumeth, and the sons of Ephai the Netophathite, and Jezaniah the son of a Maakathite, they and their men. Then Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan swore to them and to their men, saying, “Do not be afraid to serve the Chaldeans. Dwell in the land and serve the king of Babylon, and it will be well with you. 10 As for me, I will dwell at Mizpah to serve the Chaldeans who will come to us. But you, gather wine and summer fruits and oil, and put them in your vessels and dwell in your cities that you have taken.”

11 Likewise, also all the Jews who were in Moab, and among the Ammonites, and in Edom, and who were in all the countries, heard that the king of Babylon had left a remnant of Judah, and that he had set over them Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan. 12 Then all the Jews returned out of all places wherever they were driven and came to the land of Judah, to Gedaliah at Mizpah, and gathered very much wine and summer fruits.

13 Moreover Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces that were in the fields, came to Gedaliah at Mizpah, 14 and said to him, “Do you certainly know that Baalis, the king of the Ammonites, has sent Ishmael the son of Nethaniah to slay you?” But Gedaliah the son of Ahikam did not believe them.

15 Then Johanan the son of Kareah spoke to Gedaliah in Mizpah secretly, saying, “Let me go, please, and I will slay Ishmael the son of Nethaniah and no man shall know it. Why should he slay you so that all the Jews who are gathered to you should be scattered and the remnant in Judah perish?”

16 But Gedaliah the son of Ahikam said to Johanan the son of Kareah, “You shall not do this thing, for you speak falsely of Ishmael.”

41 In the seventh month Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, the son of Elishama of the royal seed, and the officials of the king, even ten men with him, came to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam to Mizpah. While they were eating bread together in Mizpah, Ishmael the son of Nethaniah and the ten men that were with him arose and struck Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan with the sword and slew him, whom the king of Babylon had made governor over the land. Ishmael also slew all the Jews who were with him, even with Gedaliah at Mizpah, and the Chaldeans who were found there, and the men of war.

On the day after he had slain Gedaliah, when no one knew it, eighty men came from Shechem, from Shiloh, and from Samaria, having their beards shaven, and their clothes torn, and their bodies gashed, with offerings and incense in their hands to bring them to the house of the Lord. Then Ishmael the son of Nethaniah went out from Mizpah to meet them, weeping all along as he went. As he met them, he said to them, “Come to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam!” Yet it was so when they came into the midst of the city that Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, he and the men who were with him, slew them and cast them into the midst of the cistern. But ten men were found among those who said to Ishmael, “Do not slay us, for we have stores in the field, of wheat and barley, and of oil and honey.” So he refrained and did not slay them among their brothers. Now the cistern in which Ishmael had cast all the dead bodies of the men, whom he had slain because of Gedaliah, was what Asa the king had made because of Baasha the king of Israel. And Ishmael the son of Nethaniah filled it with those who were slain.

10 Then Ishmael carried away captive all the rest of the people who were in Mizpah, even the king’s daughters, and all the people who remained in Mizpah whom Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard had committed to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam. And Ishmael the son of Nethaniah carried them away captive, and departed to go over to the Ammonites.

11 But when Johanan the son of Kareah and all the captains of the forces that were with him heard of all the evil that Ishmael the son of Nethaniah had done, 12 then they took all the men and went to fight with Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and found him by the great waters that are in Gibeon. 13 And when all the people who were with Ishmael saw Johanan the son of Kareah and all the captains of the forces that were with him, they were glad. 14 So all the people whom Ishmael had carried away captive from Mizpah turned about and returned, and went to Johanan the son of Kareah. 15 But Ishmael the son of Nethaniah escaped from Johanan with eight men and went to the Ammonites.

16 Then Johanan the son of Kareah and all the captains of the forces that were with him took all the remnant of the people whom he had recovered from Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, from Mizpah, after he had slain Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, even mighty men of war, and the women, and the children, and the eunuchs, whom he had brought back from Gibeon. 17 And they departed and lived in the habitation of Geruth Kimham, which is by Bethlehem, intending to go to Egypt, 18 because of the Chaldeans. For they were afraid of them, because Ishmael the son of Nethaniah had slain Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, whom the king of Babylon made governor in the land.

2 Timothy 1

Salutation

Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, according to the promise of life which is in Christ Jesus,

To Timothy, my beloved son:

Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

Loyalty to the Gospel

I thank God, whom I serve with a pure conscience as my forefathers did, as I continually remember you in my prayers night and day, greatly desiring to see you, remembering your tears, that I may be filled with joy, remembering the genuine faith that first lived in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and that I am persuaded lives in you also.

Therefore I remind you to stir up the gift of God, which is in you by the laying on of my hands. For God has not given us the spirit of fear, but of power, and love, and self-control. So do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me, His prisoner. But share in the sufferings of the gospel by the power of God, who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not by our works, but by His own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began, 10 but is now revealed by the appearing of our Savior, Jesus Christ, who has abolished death and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel, 11 for which I was appointed a preacher, an apostle, and a teacher of the Gentiles. 12 For these things I suffer, but I am not ashamed, for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that He is able to keep that which I have committed to Him until that Day.

13 Follow the pattern of sound teaching which you have heard from me in the faith and love that is in Christ Jesus. 14 Guard the treasure that was committed to you through the Holy Spirit who lives in us.

15 You know that all those who are in Asia have turned away from me, including Phygelus and Hermogenes.

16 May the Lord grant mercy to the house of Onesiphorus, for he often refreshed me and was not ashamed of my chains. 17 But when he arrived in Rome, he searched me out very diligently and found me. 18 May the Lord grant that he may find mercy from the Lord on that Day. You know very well how many ways he ministered to me at Ephesus.

Psalm 90-91

BOOK FOUR

Psalms 90–106

Psalm 90

A Prayer of Moses, the man of God.

Lord, You have been our dwelling place
in all generations.
Before the mountains were brought forth,
or You had formed the earth and the world,
even from everlasting to everlasting You are God.

You return man to the dust
and say, “Return, you children of men.”
For a thousand years in Your sight
are but as yesterday when it is past,
or as a night watch in the night time.
You carry them away as with a flood;
they are as a dream, like renewed grass in the morning:
In the morning it flourishes and grows up;
in the evening it fades and withers.

For we are consumed by Your anger,
and by Your wrath we are terrified.
You have set our iniquities before You,
even our secret sins in the light of Your presence.
For all our days pass away in your wrath;
we end our years with a groan.
10 The years of our life are seventy,
and if by reason of strength eighty;
yet their length is toil and sorrow,
for they soon end, and we fly away.
11 Who knows the power of Your anger?
Or Your wrath according to Your fear?
12 So teach us to number our days,
that we may apply our hearts to wisdom.

13 Return, O Lord, how long?
Have mercy on Your servants.
14 Satisfy us in the early morning with Your mercy,
that we may rejoice and be glad all our days.
15 Make us glad according to the days that You have afflicted us,
and the years that we have seen evil.
16 Let Your work be displayed to Your servants
and Your glory to their children.

17 Let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us,
and establish the work of our hands among us;
yes, establish the work of our hands.

Psalm 91

He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High
shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress,
my God in whom I trust.”

Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the hunter
and from the deadly pestilence.
He shall cover you with His feathers,
and under His wings you shall find protection;
His faithfulness shall be your shield and wall.
You shall not be afraid of the terror by night,
nor of the arrow that flies by day;
nor of the pestilence that pursues in darkness,
nor of the destruction that strikes at noonday.
A thousand may fall at your side
and ten thousand at your right hand,
but it shall not come near you.
Only with your eyes shall you behold
and see the reward of the wicked.

Because you have made the Lord, who is my refuge,
even the Most High, your dwelling,
10 there shall be no evil befall you,
neither shall any plague come near your tent;
11 for He shall give His angels charge over you
to guard you in all your ways.
12 They shall bear you up in their hands,
lest you strike your foot against a stone.
13 You shall tread upon the lion and adder;
the young lion and the serpent you shall trample underfoot.

14 Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him;
I will set him on high, because he has known My name.
15 He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him;
I will be with him in trouble,
and I will deliver him and honor him.
16 With long life I will satisfy him
and show him My salvation.

Proverbs 26:1-2

26 As snow in summer, and as rain in harvest,
so honor is not seemly for a fool.
As the bird by flitting, as the swallow by flying,
so the curse without cause will not alight.
