Jeremiah 16:16-18:23, 1 Thessalonians 4:1-5:3, Psalms 81:1-16, Proverbs 25:6-8

Today is the 11th day of October welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I am Brian and it is wonderful to be here with you today, today and every day around the Global Campfire together taking the next step forward together. And, so, as we dive into this workweek, we pick up where we left off each and every day, will lead us into Jeremiah. We’re reading from the New Living Translation this week. Jeremiah chapter 16 verse 16 through 18 verse 23 today.

Commentary:

Okay. Let’s talk for a minute about God’s plan since God wanted to talk about his plan today in the Scriptures that we read in the book of Jeremiah. So, let’s talk about God’s plan. And its unlikely that nobody in the sound of my voice has ever heard that phrase, that term, “God’s plan” before. We think God has a plan and we start considering that plan in different sets of circumstances. For example, if things are going bad, poorly for us, we’re challenged, we’re being pressed or having to endure, or things have just gotten crazy in the world than often we’ll blame God’s plan. We’ll just be like, “well, it’s beyond me, but God has a plan. I don’t understand it, we don't…but it will all make sense someday, because God is sovereign and He has a plan.” And on one level that can be a comforting thing to consider. Like, “okay this is beyond the scope of what I can comprehend or understand. I’m upside down. I…like I feel like I’m spinning in a tornado. I don’t even know where up is, but God has a plan.” That can become a comforting thought. A lot of the time, though it’s more of an excuse. We can look at the messes that we make, try to take several steps away from what we’ve done because maybe we’ve part…we’ve just been participating with other human beings in creating havoc in some sort of way and we’ll just try to distance ourselves and then It’s God’s fault because God has a plan. The things we don’t understand, the things that happen, the messes that are made in this world, whether like locally or in our homes or globally. It’s not my fault, right? It’s not our fault. It’s God’s fault because God has a plan, and this must be His plan. So…so, God’s to blame for it all. So, we can get our minds around those kinds of scenarios and how we would say things about God’s plan. Here’s what God said today about his plan in Jeremiah. And by the way Jeremiah contains the most famous verse in all of the Bible about God’s plans once we get to chapter 29 and we’ll talk about that then. But He’s already talking about plans here in the 18th chapter. So, here's…here’s the Lord speaking. “If I announce that a certain nation or kingdom is to be uprooted, torn down and destroyed but then that nation renounces its evil ways I will not destroy it as I had planned. And if I announce that I will plant and build up a certain nation or kingdom but then that nation turns to evil and refuses to obey me I will not bless it as I said I would.” So, it’s safe to say God has a plan. It’s safe throughout Scripture to consider that perfect plan to be the restoration of humanity. But what we see in God’s words as spoken to the prophet Jeremiah, our choices matter in that plan. We have a role to play as ourselves as individual people, but as the human race. And we have seen many times in the Scripture where God relents. We saw that beginning with Abraham. God responds to a contrite spirit. God responds to a broken heart. God responds when we humble ourselves under His mighty hand and that, at least as we see in Jeremiah today can change God’s plan, that He adjusts based on the actions and motives of His people, that He has allowed our decisions and our choices, our humility or our pride and arrogance to lead where it’s going to lead. And that’s kind of a big deal. It…it’s kind of a biblical concept that runs through the Scriptures. We would know it as sowing and reaping, right? So, you sow weeds, and you reap weeds If you sow corn then you’re going to reap corn if you have a harvest. So, if you’re gonna sow bitterness you’re going to reap bitterness. If you’re gonna sow arrogance then you’re going to reap arrogance. If you’re gonna sow gossip you’re gonna reap gossip. And we could go on and on and on. You’re going to reap what you sow. It’s a natural law put in place by God. You don’t plant grass seed and get turnups. You get what you plant and cultivate. God’s ultimate plan is to redeem humanity, and we are the redeemed already. And still we’re confused about sowing and reaping. And, so, we sow garbage and reap garbage and go “well, it’s God’s plan. And, so, let’s put that in our cup and stir it around and consider the fact that we have a role to play in our own lives and we have a role to play in the story of God and He has allowed us to be here at all. And we are supposed to be a part of the plan of redemption.

Prayer:

Holy Spirit come help this is sink into our lives. Help us to see the ways that we’ve blamed you for things you didn’t do and we’ve accused you of things you were not involved in. And we’ve labeled our plan. Your plan sometimes when things don’t work out right so that we can pass the blame, take some side steps. We are a peculiar people. We are like sheep who have gone astray. We can be so stiff necked. We see all these examples in the Scriptures. We see that this is a human condition because it’s been going on for thousands of years, and yet we want your patience and your kindness continuing to respond toward us, always ready to reach out your strong arm of redemption on our behalf if we aren’t bound and determined to rebel against you. And, so, come Holy Spirit help us just to see our lives and the state that our lives are in because of the way that we make decisions and help us to know that every choice leads somewhere. And if we will continue to consistently habitually slow down and make wisdom a voice in our lives and wise decisions the norm, we will be in your plan having so much fun. Come Holy Spirit. Help us to realize this. We pray this in the name of Jesus. Amen

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hey, Tony the Narrator this is Tiffany from New Mexico, and I heard your prayer request this morning for your mom who has COVID. And I just wanted to let you know that my mom also just had her second bout with COVID and thankfully she’s doing better now but it was really scary. So, I can only imagine…or I can imagine how you’re feeling because I was just in that same place worried about my mom. And I know that you would never in a million years wish something like this on your mom, but I am so grateful and encouraged to hear that you’re using this time to show her love and take care of her as Jesus would and be a witness through it all. How wonderful that she has such a great son to take care of her and…and share Jesus with her. So, I wanted you to know that you are 100% right and that we will all be praying for her, and she will have hundreds or thousands of people kneeling on her behalf. And just give her a big hug from us and…and let her know that she’s loved. Take care everybody. Bye.

Hey, my adorable DAB family this is Kingdom Seeker Daniel. Family, just want to pray for a couple of our DABbers. So, let’s all pray. Dear Jesus, I come lifting up our beloved sister Victoria Soldier who has lost a brother on this side. Where heaven has gained him, she has suffered a great loss. We ask God that you would send comfort and strength to her and her family. Lord will you cause Victoria Soldier to know that it’s OK for her not to be OK. Even though she is known as a soldier, in this particular season Lord it’s OK for her to show weakness because in her weakness that’s when she’s made strong because of You. So, father I pray that You would help our beloved sister to lean into You as well as to lean into her DAB and DABC family because we’ve got her. She’s had us for so long for so many. Now it’s our turn. So, God would you rally to her aid and let her know that she is OK to let it all go and let you carry her and let us carry her. We love you sis. We got you. In Jesus’ name. And then for my dear brother Tony the Narrator. Lord be with his mom as she’s battling COVID and a cold and we’re praying for complete turn around and healing of both her body and her soul. Thank you for the opportunity for Tony to minister Your word. Do a complete work of healing in her life in Jesus’ name. Amen. Love you family.

Hello Daily Audio Bible family this Alfio calling from Central Valley CA. I hope each one of you is doing great. I want to pray and remember those of our brothers and sisters who are struggling with mental health. I know the days where sometimes a lot of us struggle and don’t want to share because of cultural differences for whatever the case it may be. It’s OK to be anxious. It’s OK to be depressed. It’s not OK to stay down there. It’s OK to seek help. It’s OK to take medications. It’s OK to seek counseling. It’s OK to seek supportive services. Please feel free to seek all these resources for your good, your own good. And in the Bible, we see a lot of characters who were struggling with anxiety and depression. God is a God of healing. God is a God of a good mind. No matter the case, I pray that you may recover anyone who’s struggling at this moment, especially during this time of the pandemic. And I also wanted to pray for my sister of Victoria Soldier. You called in yesterday or a couple of days ago for the loss of your brother. I remember you in my prayers and I pray that your brother’s soul may rest in peace. And even those who are struggling with the loss of their loved ones, may God be with you. May God sustain you and may God grant you peace that surpasses all understanding. Love you family.

DABbers this is Kira Contrite Spirit and this message is for Kansas from Oregon and also anyone else who’s dealing with someone who has a meth problem, methamphetamine. I was…I did meth for about 12 years. And, so, I encountered another…theft is common and stealing and lying and deception. And I repent from my…all my experience involved in that kind of stuff, and I repent for your daughters ex’s stealing of the computers and I pray that, you know, she’ll get back…maybe if he doesn’t give those back she’ll just get an abundance of what she needs. And I pray for the children, the child involved in that situation and…yeah…I repent for his sins too, that he…that God would draw him your ex’s, your daughters ex’s to Him and that also that…that he would know that Jesus is Lord and that he would turn away from his wrongdoing for the…for his sake…for God’s sake, for the sake of his child and for your daughter. And I pray for the whole situation, and everyone involved that…that all of you guys including you Candace will find peace in this situation and for everyone else involved and these hard-core addictions, especially meth, alcohol too. It just…it’s a scourge in…in the world. And we need to have the peace of Christ and pray for everyone at all times without ceasing in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Hi DAB family it’s James here from the UK. It’s been a long time since I’ve called in and I’ve been out of touch if I’m honest with the DAB. I would really appreciate your prayers. Some people will know a little bit about my situation from previous prayer requests, but yeah things have got really tough and I think ultimately my wife and myself are at…are in a situation now where we’re really trying to work out what we can do to reconcile things. It’s a super stressful situation and there’s three children involved, three teenage kids. I’m trying to support my mom who is dealing with my father. He’s got dementia and doesn’t really know who I am anymore. And it’s just all taking its toll, moving here to support them and trying to stand in the gap has just left us in a very bleak situation. So, it’s challenged. Our faith is depleted, our faith. It’s…it’s put us in for a real tailspin and it’s made us really question the strength of our marriage and what we do next. So, prayer is very much appreciated.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Monday October 11, 2021 (NIV)

Jeremiah 16:16-18:23

16 “But now I am sending for many fishermen who will catch them,” says the Lord. “I am sending for hunters who will hunt them down in the mountains, hills, and caves. 17 I am watching them closely, and I see every sin. They cannot hope to hide from me. 18 I will double their punishment for all their sins, because they have defiled my land with lifeless images of their detestable gods and have filled my territory with their evil deeds.”

Jeremiah’s Prayer of Confidence

19 Lord, you are my strength and fortress,
my refuge in the day of trouble!
Nations from around the world
will come to you and say,
“Our ancestors left us a foolish heritage,
for they worshiped worthless idols.
20 Can people make their own gods?
These are not real gods at all!”

21 The Lord says,
“Now I will show them my power;
now I will show them my might.
At last they will know and understand
that I am the Lord.

Judah’s Sin and Punishment

17 “The sin of Judah
is inscribed with an iron chisel—
engraved with a diamond point on their stony hearts
and on the corners of their altars.
Even their children go to worship
at their pagan altars and Asherah poles,
beneath every green tree
and on every high hill.
So I will hand over my holy mountain—
along with all your wealth and treasures
and your pagan shrines—
as plunder to your enemies,
for sin runs rampant in your land.
The wonderful possession I have reserved for you
will slip from your hands.
I will tell your enemies to take you
as captives to a foreign land.
For my anger blazes like a fire
that will burn forever.”

Wisdom from the Lord

This is what the Lord says:
“Cursed are those who put their trust in mere humans,
who rely on human strength
and turn their hearts away from the Lord.
They are like stunted shrubs in the desert,
with no hope for the future.
They will live in the barren wilderness,
in an uninhabited salty land.

“But blessed are those who trust in the Lord
and have made the Lord their hope and confidence.
They are like trees planted along a riverbank,
with roots that reach deep into the water.
Such trees are not bothered by the heat
or worried by long months of drought.
Their leaves stay green,
and they never stop producing fruit.

“The human heart is the most deceitful of all things,
and desperately wicked.
Who really knows how bad it is?
10 But I, the Lord, search all hearts
and examine secret motives.
I give all people their due rewards,
according to what their actions deserve.”

Jeremiah’s Trust in the Lord

11 Like a partridge that hatches eggs she has not laid,
so are those who get their wealth by unjust means.
At midlife they will lose their riches;
in the end, they will become poor old fools.
12 But we worship at your throne—
eternal, high, and glorious!
13 O Lord, the hope of Israel,
all who turn away from you will be disgraced.
They will be buried in the dust of the earth,
for they have abandoned the Lord, the fountain of living water.

14 O Lord, if you heal me, I will be truly healed;
if you save me, I will be truly saved.
My praises are for you alone!
15 People scoff at me and say,
“What is this ‘message from the Lord’ you talk about?
Why don’t your predictions come true?”

16 Lord, I have not abandoned my job
as a shepherd for your people.
I have not urged you to send disaster.
You have heard everything I’ve said.
17 Lord, don’t terrorize me!
You alone are my hope in the day of disaster.
18 Bring shame and dismay on all who persecute me,
but don’t let me experience shame and dismay.
Bring a day of terror on them.
Yes, bring double destruction upon them!

Observing the Sabbath

19 This is what the Lord said to me: “Go and stand in the gates of Jerusalem, first in the gate where the king goes in and out, and then in each of the other gates. 20 Say to all the people, ‘Listen to this message from the Lord, you kings of Judah and all you people of Judah and everyone living in Jerusalem. 21 This is what the Lord says: Listen to my warning! Stop carrying on your trade at Jerusalem’s gates on the Sabbath day. 22 Do not do your work on the Sabbath, but make it a holy day. I gave this command to your ancestors, 23 but they did not listen or obey. They stubbornly refused to pay attention or accept my discipline.

24 “‘But if you obey me, says the Lord, and do not carry on your trade at the gates or work on the Sabbath day, and if you keep it holy, 25 then kings and their officials will go in and out of these gates forever. There will always be a descendant of David sitting on the throne here in Jerusalem. Kings and their officials will always ride in and out among the people of Judah in chariots and on horses, and this city will remain forever. 26 And from all around Jerusalem, from the towns of Judah and Benjamin, from the western foothills[a] and the hill country and the Negev, the people will come with their burnt offerings and sacrifices. They will bring their grain offerings, frankincense, and thanksgiving offerings to the Lord’s Temple.

27 “‘But if you do not listen to me and refuse to keep the Sabbath holy, and if on the Sabbath day you bring loads of merchandise through the gates of Jerusalem just as on other days, then I will set fire to these gates. The fire will spread to the palaces, and no one will be able to put out the roaring flames.’”

The Potter and the Clay

18 The Lord gave another message to Jeremiah. He said, “Go down to the potter’s shop, and I will speak to you there.” So I did as he told me and found the potter working at his wheel. But the jar he was making did not turn out as he had hoped, so he crushed it into a lump of clay again and started over.

Then the Lord gave me this message: “O Israel, can I not do to you as this potter has done to his clay? As the clay is in the potter’s hand, so are you in my hand. If I announce that a certain nation or kingdom is to be uprooted, torn down, and destroyed, but then that nation renounces its evil ways, I will not destroy it as I had planned. And if I announce that I will plant and build up a certain nation or kingdom, 10 but then that nation turns to evil and refuses to obey me, I will not bless it as I said I would.

11 “Therefore, Jeremiah, go and warn all Judah and Jerusalem. Say to them, ‘This is what the Lord says: I am planning disaster for you instead of good. So turn from your evil ways, each of you, and do what is right.’”

12 But the people replied, “Don’t waste your breath. We will continue to live as we want to, stubbornly following our own evil desires.”

13 So this is what the Lord says:

“Has anyone ever heard of such a thing,
even among the pagan nations?
My virgin daughter Israel
has done something terrible!
14 Does the snow ever disappear from the mountaintops of Lebanon?
Do the cold streams flowing from those distant mountains ever run dry?
15 But my people are not so reliable, for they have deserted me;
they burn incense to worthless idols.
They have stumbled off the ancient highways
and walk in muddy paths.
16 Therefore, their land will become desolate,
a monument to their stupidity.
All who pass by will be astonished
and will shake their heads in amazement.
17 I will scatter my people before their enemies
as the east wind scatters dust.
And in all their trouble I will turn my back on them
and refuse to notice their distress.”

A Plot against Jeremiah

18 Then the people said, “Come on, let’s plot a way to stop Jeremiah. We have plenty of priests and wise men and prophets. We don’t need him to teach the word and give us advice and prophecies. Let’s spread rumors about him and ignore what he says.”

19 Lord, hear me and help me!
Listen to what my enemies are saying.
20 Should they repay evil for good?
They have dug a pit to kill me,
though I pleaded for them
and tried to protect them from your anger.
21 So let their children starve!
Let them die by the sword!
Let their wives become childless widows.
Let their old men die in a plague,
and let their young men be killed in battle!
22 Let screaming be heard from their homes
as warriors come suddenly upon them.
For they have dug a pit for me
and have hidden traps along my path.
23 Lord, you know all about their murderous plots against me.
Don’t forgive their crimes and blot out their sins.
Let them die before you.
Deal with them in your anger.

1 Thessalonians 4:1-5:3

Live to Please God

Finally, dear brothers and sisters,[a] we urge you in the name of the Lord Jesus to live in a way that pleases God, as we have taught you. You live this way already, and we encourage you to do so even more. For you remember what we taught you by the authority of the Lord Jesus.

God’s will is for you to be holy, so stay away from all sexual sin. Then each of you will control his own body[b] and live in holiness and honor— not in lustful passion like the pagans who do not know God and his ways. Never harm or cheat a fellow believer in this matter by violating his wife,[c] for the Lord avenges all such sins, as we have solemnly warned you before. God has called us to live holy lives, not impure lives. Therefore, anyone who refuses to live by these rules is not disobeying human teaching but is rejecting God, who gives his Holy Spirit to you.

But we don’t need to write to you about the importance of loving each other,[d] for God himself has taught you to love one another. 10 Indeed, you already show your love for all the believers[e] throughout Macedonia. Even so, dear brothers and sisters, we urge you to love them even more.

11 Make it your goal to live a quiet life, minding your own business and working with your hands, just as we instructed you before. 12 Then people who are not believers will respect the way you live, and you will not need to depend on others.

The Hope of the Resurrection

13 And now, dear brothers and sisters, we want you to know what will happen to the believers who have died[f] so you will not grieve like people who have no hope. 14 For since we believe that Jesus died and was raised to life again, we also believe that when Jesus returns, God will bring back with him the believers who have died.

15 We tell you this directly from the Lord: We who are still living when the Lord returns will not meet him ahead of those who have died.[g] 16 For the Lord himself will come down from heaven with a commanding shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trumpet call of God. First, the believers who have died[h] will rise from their graves. 17 Then, together with them, we who are still alive and remain on the earth will be caught up in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. Then we will be with the Lord forever. 18 So encourage each other with these words.

Now concerning how and when all this will happen, dear brothers and sisters,[i] we don’t really need to write you. For you know quite well that the day of the Lord’s return will come unexpectedly, like a thief in the night. When people are saying, “Everything is peaceful and secure,” then disaster will fall on them as suddenly as a pregnant woman’s labor pains begin. And there will be no escape.

Psalm 81

Psalm 81

For the choir director: A psalm of Asaph, to be accompanied by a stringed instrument.[a]

Sing praises to God, our strength.
Sing to the God of Jacob.
Sing! Beat the tambourine.
Play the sweet lyre and the harp.
Blow the ram’s horn at new moon,
and again at full moon to call a festival!
For this is required by the decrees of Israel;
it is a regulation of the God of Jacob.
He made it a law for Israel[b]
when he attacked Egypt to set us free.

I heard an unknown voice say,
“Now I will take the load from your shoulders;
I will free your hands from their heavy tasks.
You cried to me in trouble, and I saved you;
I answered out of the thundercloud
and tested your faith when there was no water at Meribah. Interlude

“Listen to me, O my people, while I give you stern warnings.
O Israel, if you would only listen to me!
You must never have a foreign god;
you must not bow down before a false god.
10 For it was I, the Lord your God,
who rescued you from the land of Egypt.
Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it with good things.

11 “But no, my people wouldn’t listen.
Israel did not want me around.
12 So I let them follow their own stubborn desires,
living according to their own ideas.
13 Oh, that my people would listen to me!
Oh, that Israel would follow me, walking in my paths!
14 How quickly I would then subdue their enemies!
How soon my hands would be upon their foes!
15 Those who hate the Lord would cringe before him;
they would be doomed forever.
16 But I would feed you with the finest wheat.
I would satisfy you with wild honey from the rock.”

Proverbs 25:6-8

Don’t demand an audience with the king
or push for a place among the great.
It’s better to wait for an invitation to the head table
than to be sent away in public disgrace.

Just because you’ve seen something,
don’t be in a hurry to go to court.
For what will you do in the end
if your neighbor deals you a shameful defeat?

Jeremiah 14:11-16:15, 1 Thessalonians 2:9-3:13, Psalm 80:1-19, Proverbs 25:1-5

Today is the 10th day of October, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian it is great to be here with you today. As we turn the page and step through the threshold into a new shiny sparkly week out in front of us. And we always try to remember, every time we start a new week together, that it’s out in front of us and we can be intentional about it. It’s a fresh start and we can always make the next right decision. One of those next right decisions is to allow the Scriptures to continue to speak to us each and every day. So, let’s dive in. This week we will read from the New Living Translation and of course we’ll be picking up where we left off in the book of Jeremiah today chapter 14 verse 11 through 16 verse 15.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word and we thank You for this brand-new week that will escort us into the center of this month and every time we think of these things, it’s hard not to think of Your faithfulness, that each and every day You continue to speak to us in the Scriptures, each and every day You continue to transform us by challenging us in the ways that we live and behave, our thoughts, words and deeds. The things that we have done and the things that we have left undone. So come, Holy Spirit, continue to lead us, continue to lead us deeper into Jesus, continue to lead us into all truth. We ask this in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Prayer and Encouragements:

Hi DAB phono, I Brian, just heard your message today, October the 5th. So, want to tell you, we appreciate you so much. Everything you do, little glitches, big glitches, whatever. I so appreciate having that word every day, it’s been such an encouragement and help through these difficult times. And that Psalms 77 today. Boy that was gutsy. Really enjoyed hearing the truth, the honesty that gutsiness of someone’s heart cry and then the remembering of God’s faithfulness He’s always been faithful. He always will be faithful, He can’t be untrue to Himself that’s who He is, I so love it. And I’m simply so encouraged today, thank you. I appreciate you’ve had a bit of a rough time with sorting out the internet glitches and it’s possibly that we’d just miss it so much that if someone’s reacted it’s because we miss it so much, we love it so much. Hey, but anyway my name is Kate I’m from New Zealand and I appreciate so much. Thank you for being there for us. Thank you for bringing it to us. Thank you for drawing our attention through the Holy Spirit to the things we need to hear and want to hear and love to hear so we can walk better with our God, so we can walk closer, so we can encourage each other and strengthen each other in this walk together. Thank you.

Hi Daily Audio Bible family, this is Carrie Thompson from Lancaster, Ohio. And this is the first time that I have called in. I’ve listened to you and you’re such a wonderful, caring, loving, compassionate family. And I have recently purchased a Google Nest and can listen to Audio Bible, and so, I just ask it to play the Daily Audio Bible and here you came up. I have fell right in love and listen to you, well, I was listening to you every day and then I kind of fell away. And I’m back now. And then, took me a while to figure it out but I finally found the app and I just now finally figured out how to do this recording. Well, I only have about 48 more seconds so, let me end with a quick prayer. Thank You dear Lord for leading me to Daily Audio Bible and their family. I just pray for everyone who calls in for all their needs. Lord, You said You would provide and we believe You and trust You and just thank You for the opportunity to allow me to join and be apart of it. And Lord, we just love You and bless You and praise You in the name of Jesus. Amen. [singing] Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound, that saved …

Hey, DAB family, Rene Las Sove here. I have got an urgent prayer request and you guys have been so good, so, so, so many times you’ve prayed for this person and I’m gonna ask you to pray once again because as this airs this person is probably very likely just had a whole bottle of vodka and is just not functioning well and man, I just, this is my daughter, we’re talking about my daughter and I need prayer for her. It’s just getting to a point where it’s critical. She’s gonna have organs soon that just aren’t gonna function anymore. It’s a very critical time because she is also been on different medications and because of some insurance reasons. She lives overseas and the doctors are taking her off of these medications and so I think she may even be self-medicating more than usual. Please, please pray, Satan got a real strong hold on her. She has a good friend who is helping her but, and that’s wonderful and he is a Christian man, which is wonderful. But she needs prayers from thousands of people. I asked this, I ask you to pray for her in the name of Jesus, thank you so much family. Bye.

Hey Daily Audio Bible family, I’m gonna call myself the 99th. I’ve strayed and I’ve wondered but our Good Shephard Jesus always brought me back. And He’ll do the same for you my brothers and sisters. And for your lovely mama too Tony the Narrator because He is good. And for all of us who have strayed and struggled and gone away from the Lord for a while and we’ve drug ourself back He will wash us off and clean us and cleanse us from all of our sins and unrighteousness if we’re truly sorry for it. And He will put us up on our feet and start all over again because He promised He would never leave us or forsake us. And when Jesus promises something, he doesn’t take it back like a lot, maybe a lot of our friends and family members have done that but He never will. And we’re on a fast track right now going home to heaven. So, hang in there brothers and sisters, it’s gonna be worth the wait. I promise you. I promise you that sounds kind of funny but I can honestly say I promise you that cause we’ll all be sitting at that campfire together in heaven. And I think we all kind of feel that to, I’m kind of hoping we do. And if you don’t, if you’re sitting on the fence, please come on down and drink in what Jesus has for you, brothers and sisters I love you all very much. This is the 99th signing off. Have a great rest of your day. Bye.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Sunday October 10, 2021 (NIV)

Jeremiah 14:11-16:15

The Lord Forbids Jeremiah to Intercede

11 Then the Lord said to me, “Do not pray for these people anymore. 12 When they fast, I will pay no attention. When they present their burnt offerings and grain offerings to me, I will not accept them. Instead, I will devour them with war, famine, and disease.”

13 Then I said, “O Sovereign Lord, their prophets are telling them, ‘All is well—no war or famine will come. The Lord will surely send you peace.’”

14 Then the Lord said, “These prophets are telling lies in my name. I did not send them or tell them to speak. I did not give them any messages. They prophesy of visions and revelations they have never seen or heard. They speak foolishness made up in their own lying hearts. 15 Therefore, this is what the Lord says: I will punish these lying prophets, for they have spoken in my name even though I never sent them. They say that no war or famine will come, but they themselves will die by war and famine! 16 As for the people to whom they prophesy—their bodies will be thrown out into the streets of Jerusalem, victims of famine and war. There will be no one left to bury them. Husbands, wives, sons, and daughters—all will be gone. For I will pour out their own wickedness on them. 17 Now, Jeremiah, say this to them:

“Night and day my eyes overflow with tears.
I cannot stop weeping,
for my virgin daughter—my precious people—
has been struck down
and lies mortally wounded.
18 If I go out into the fields,
I see the bodies of people slaughtered by the enemy.
If I walk the city streets,
I see people who have died of starvation.
The prophets and priests continue with their work,
but they don’t know what they’re doing.”

A Prayer for Healing

19 Lord, have you completely rejected Judah?
Do you really hate Jerusalem?[a]
Why have you wounded us past all hope of healing?
We hoped for peace, but no peace came.
We hoped for a time of healing, but found only terror.
20 Lord, we confess our wickedness
and that of our ancestors, too.
We all have sinned against you.
21 For the sake of your reputation, Lord, do not abandon us.
Do not disgrace your own glorious throne.
Please remember us,
and do not break your covenant with us.

22 Can any of the worthless foreign gods send us rain?
Does it fall from the sky by itself?
No, you are the one, O Lord our God!
Only you can do such things.
So we will wait for you to help us.

Judah’s Inevitable Doom

15 Then the Lord said to me, “Even if Moses and Samuel stood before me pleading for these people, I wouldn’t help them. Away with them! Get them out of my sight! And if they say to you, ‘But where can we go?’ tell them, ‘This is what the Lord says:

“‘Those who are destined for death, to death;
those who are destined for war, to war;
those who are destined for famine, to famine;
those who are destined for captivity, to captivity.’

“I will send four kinds of destroyers against them,” says the Lord. “I will send the sword to kill, the dogs to drag away, the vultures to devour, and the wild animals to finish up what is left. Because of the wicked things Manasseh son of Hezekiah, king of Judah, did in Jerusalem, I will make my people an object of horror to all the kingdoms of the earth.

“Who will feel sorry for you, Jerusalem?
Who will weep for you?
Who will even bother to ask how you are?
You have abandoned me
and turned your back on me,”
says the Lord.
“Therefore, I will raise my fist to destroy you.
I am tired of always giving you another chance.
I will winnow you like grain at the gates of your cities
and take away the children you hold dear.
I will destroy my own people,
because they refuse to change their evil ways.
There will be more widows
than the grains of sand on the seashore.
At noontime I will bring a destroyer
against the mothers of young men.
I will cause anguish and terror
to come upon them suddenly.
The mother of seven grows faint and gasps for breath;
her sun has gone down while it is still day.
She sits childless now,
disgraced and humiliated.
And I will hand over those who are left
to be killed by the enemy.
I, the Lord, have spoken!”

Jeremiah’s Complaint

10 Then I said,

“What sorrow is mine, my mother.
Oh, that I had died at birth!
I am hated everywhere I go.
I am neither a lender who threatens to foreclose
nor a borrower who refuses to pay—
yet they all curse me.”

11 The Lord replied,

“I will take care of you, Jeremiah.
Your enemies will ask you to plead on their behalf
in times of trouble and distress.
12 Can a man break a bar of iron from the north,
or a bar of bronze?
13 At no cost to them,
I will hand over your wealth and treasures
as plunder to your enemies,
for sin runs rampant in your land.
14 I will tell your enemies to take you
as captives to a foreign land.
For my anger blazes like a fire
that will burn forever.[b]

15 Then I said,

Lord, you know what’s happening to me.
Please step in and help me. Punish my persecutors!
Please give me time; don’t let me die young.
It’s for your sake that I am suffering.
16 When I discovered your words, I devoured them.
They are my joy and my heart’s delight,
for I bear your name,
O Lord God of Heaven’s Armies.
17 I never joined the people in their merry feasts.
I sat alone because your hand was on me.
I was filled with indignation at their sins.
18 Why then does my suffering continue?
Why is my wound so incurable?
Your help seems as uncertain as a seasonal brook,
like a spring that has gone dry.”

19 This is how the Lord responds:

“If you return to me, I will restore you
so you can continue to serve me.
If you speak good words rather than worthless ones,
you will be my spokesman.
You must influence them;
do not let them influence you!
20 They will fight against you like an attacking army,
but I will make you as secure as a fortified wall of bronze.
They will not conquer you,
for I am with you to protect and rescue you.
I, the Lord, have spoken!
21 Yes, I will certainly keep you safe from these wicked men.
I will rescue you from their cruel hands.”

Jeremiah Forbidden to Marry

16 The Lord gave me another message. He said, “Do not get married or have children in this place. For this is what the Lord says about the children born here in this city and about their mothers and fathers: They will die from terrible diseases. No one will mourn for them or bury them, and they will lie scattered on the ground like manure. They will die from war and famine, and their bodies will be food for the vultures and wild animals.”

Judah’s Coming Punishment

This is what the Lord says: “Do not go to funerals to mourn and show sympathy for these people, for I have removed my protection and peace from them. I have taken away my unfailing love and my mercy. Both the great and the lowly will die in this land. No one will bury them or mourn for them. Their friends will not cut themselves in sorrow or shave their heads in sadness. No one will offer a meal to comfort those who mourn for the dead—not even at the death of a mother or father. No one will send a cup of wine to console them.

“And do not go to their feasts and parties. Do not eat and drink with them at all. For this is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, the God of Israel, says: In your own lifetime, before your very eyes, I will put an end to the happy singing and laughter in this land. The joyful voices of bridegrooms and brides will no longer be heard.

10 “When you tell the people all these things, they will ask, ‘Why has the Lord decreed such terrible things against us? What have we done to deserve such treatment? What is our sin against the Lord our God?’

11 “Then you will give them the Lord’s reply: ‘It is because your ancestors were unfaithful to me. They worshiped other gods and served them. They abandoned me and did not obey my word. 12 And you are even worse than your ancestors! You stubbornly follow your own evil desires and refuse to listen to me. 13 So I will throw you out of this land and send you into a foreign land where you and your ancestors have never been. There you can worship idols day and night—and I will grant you no favors!’

Hope despite the Disaster

14 “But the time is coming,” says the Lord, “when people who are taking an oath will no longer say, ‘As surely as the Lord lives, who rescued the people of Israel from the land of Egypt.’ 15 Instead, they will say, ‘As surely as the Lord lives, who brought the people of Israel back to their own land from the land of the north and from all the countries to which he had exiled them.’ For I will bring them back to this land that I gave their ancestors.

1 Thessalonians 2:9-3:13

Don’t you remember, dear brothers and sisters, how hard we worked among you? Night and day we toiled to earn a living so that we would not be a burden to any of you as we preached God’s Good News to you. 10 You yourselves are our witnesses—and so is God—that we were devout and honest and faultless toward all of you believers. 11 And you know that we treated each of you as a father treats his own children. 12 We pleaded with you, encouraged you, and urged you to live your lives in a way that God would consider worthy. For he called you to share in his Kingdom and glory.

13 Therefore, we never stop thanking God that when you received his message from us, you didn’t think of our words as mere human ideas. You accepted what we said as the very word of God—which, of course, it is. And this word continues to work in you who believe.

14 And then, dear brothers and sisters, you suffered persecution from your own countrymen. In this way, you imitated the believers in God’s churches in Judea who, because of their belief in Christ Jesus, suffered from their own people, the Jews. 15 For some of the Jews killed the prophets, and some even killed the Lord Jesus. Now they have persecuted us, too. They fail to please God and work against all humanity 16 as they try to keep us from preaching the Good News of salvation to the Gentiles. By doing this, they continue to pile up their sins. But the anger of God has caught up with them at last.

Timothy’s Good Report about the Church

17 Dear brothers and sisters, after we were separated from you for a little while (though our hearts never left you), we tried very hard to come back because of our intense longing to see you again. 18 We wanted very much to come to you, and I, Paul, tried again and again, but Satan prevented us. 19 After all, what gives us hope and joy, and what will be our proud reward and crown as we stand before our Lord Jesus when he returns? It is you! 20 Yes, you are our pride and joy.

Finally, when we could stand it no longer, we decided to stay alone in Athens, and we sent Timothy to visit you. He is our brother and God’s co-worker[a] in proclaiming the Good News of Christ. We sent him to strengthen you, to encourage you in your faith, and to keep you from being shaken by the troubles you were going through. But you know that we are destined for such troubles. Even while we were with you, we warned you that troubles would soon come—and they did, as you well know. That is why, when I could bear it no longer, I sent Timothy to find out whether your faith was still strong. I was afraid that the tempter had gotten the best of you and that our work had been useless.

But now Timothy has just returned, bringing us good news about your faith and love. He reports that you always remember our visit with joy and that you want to see us as much as we want to see you. So we have been greatly encouraged in the midst of our troubles and suffering, dear brothers and sisters,[b] because you have remained strong in your faith. It gives us new life to know that you are standing firm in the Lord.

How we thank God for you! Because of you we have great joy as we enter God’s presence. 10 Night and day we pray earnestly for you, asking God to let us see you again to fill the gaps in your faith.

11 May God our Father and our Lord Jesus bring us to you very soon. 12 And may the Lord make your love for one another and for all people grow and overflow, just as our love for you overflows. 13 May he, as a result, make your hearts strong, blameless, and holy as you stand before God our Father when our Lord Jesus comes again with all his holy people. Amen.

Psalm 80

Psalm 80

For the choir director: A psalm of Asaph, to be sung to the tune “Lilies of the Covenant.”

Please listen, O Shepherd of Israel,
you who lead Joseph’s descendants like a flock.
O God, enthroned above the cherubim,
display your radiant glory
to Ephraim, Benjamin, and Manasseh.
Show us your mighty power.
Come to rescue us!

Turn us again to yourself, O God.
Make your face shine down upon us.
Only then will we be saved.
O Lord God of Heaven’s Armies,
how long will you be angry with our prayers?
You have fed us with sorrow
and made us drink tears by the bucketful.
You have made us the scorn[a] of neighboring nations.
Our enemies treat us as a joke.

Turn us again to yourself, O God of Heaven’s Armies.
Make your face shine down upon us.
Only then will we be saved.
You brought us from Egypt like a grapevine;
you drove away the pagan nations and transplanted us into your land.
You cleared the ground for us,
and we took root and filled the land.
10 Our shade covered the mountains;
our branches covered the mighty cedars.
11 We spread our branches west to the Mediterranean Sea;
our shoots spread east to the Euphrates River.[b]
12 But now, why have you broken down our walls
so that all who pass by may steal our fruit?
13 The wild boar from the forest devours it,
and the wild animals feed on it.

14 Come back, we beg you, O God of Heaven’s Armies.
Look down from heaven and see our plight.
Take care of this grapevine
15 that you yourself have planted,
this son you have raised for yourself.
16 For we are chopped up and burned by our enemies.
May they perish at the sight of your frown.
17 Strengthen the man you love,
the son of your choice.
18 Then we will never abandon you again.
Revive us so we can call on your name once more.

19 Turn us again to yourself, O Lord God of Heaven’s Armies.
Make your face shine down upon us.
Only then will we be saved.

Proverbs 25:1-5

More Proverbs of Solomon

25 These are more proverbs of Solomon, collected by the advisers of King Hezekiah of Judah.

It is God’s privilege to conceal things
and the king’s privilege to discover them.

No one can comprehend the height of heaven, the depth of the earth,
or all that goes on in the king’s mind!

Remove the impurities from silver,
and the sterling will be ready for the silversmith.
Remove the wicked from the king’s court,
and his reign will be made secure by justice.

Jeremiah 12:1-14:10, 1 Thessalonians 1:1-2:8, Psalms 79:1-13, Proverbs4:30-34

Today is the 9th day of October welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I’m Brian it is wonderful to be here with you around the Global Campfire taking the next step forward together. That will lead us to continue our journey in the book of Jeremiah. Once we get to the New Testament, we’ll be moving into a brand-new letter from the apostle Paul, a letter to the Thessalonians, the first one. So, first Thessalonians but we’ll talk about that when we get there. We have been reading from the Common English Bible, which is what we’ll continue to do today. Jeremiah chapter 12 verse 1 through 14 verse 10.

Introduction to first Thessalonians:

Okay. As we mentioned at the beginning, we have some new territory to enter into, a letter to the church in Thessalonica called first Thessalonians. And many biblical scholars believe this is the first preserved letter from the apostle Paul. Maybe his first letter, but if this is true, then first Thessalonians is probably the earliest existing Christian writing in the world. And that’s not kind of like an outlying theory. Lots of scholars believe this to be correct, true. This church, the…the church in Thessalonica, the establishment of the church is described in the book of Acts in the 17th chapter. Paul had been in Philippi and there was persecution, right? We read of this in the book of Acts where Paul goes somewhere then Jewish people find out about it. They kinda cause a riot. Paul either gets beaten up or arrested or fleas or whatever and goes to the next town. And, so, this is kind of the story. Persecution broke out and became severe in Philippi. And, so, he travels to Thessalonica and persecution breaks out there as well. But before that happens a brand-new church is planted and spins up and it’s an intense time and Paul’s doesn’t have a whole lot of time to teach. But a church is begun, and then persecution breaks out. And, so, Paul fleas in the night. And this is all happening on the second missionary journey of Paul. And, so he fleas and a few cities later he’s in Corinth. And Paul then stays in Corinth for like a year and ½. And, so, it’s likely that from Corinth, Paul probably wrote this letter known as first Thessalonians in the early 50s A.D. And since Paul didn’t have…didn’t have a whole lot of time to teach and then lay things in order with this church because of the persecution you can imagine his concern about whether they survived or what’s happening with them, but also you can imagine the questions that the new believers have. They…they…they have all kinds of questions that come up. And, so, many of them come up in this letter. And Paul sends his letter in place of himself because he’s not able to go. And, so, he sends Timothy with this letter and Timothy returns letting Paul know that the Thessalonians are actually doing…doing well. They’re staying true. But we…we find from this letter that there are people asking questions. They don’t have full understanding. And, so, they’re questioning things that Paul had taught them. In particular things like the afterlife of a believer. And, so, Paul talks about these things and this adds to our theological understanding which…which we receive quite a bit from in the writings of Paul. And, so, with that, we turn the page and begin this letter, First Thessalonians. Today we’ll read chapter 1 verse 1 through chapter 2 verse 8.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word. We thank You for bringing us day by day’s step-by-step week by week, month by month verse by verse chapter by chapter book by book through the Scriptures and for the thing that we can’t do, the transformation that happens because of it, the change in outlook, the change in perspective, the change of heart that only You can do. So, we open ourselves to You as we enter yet another of Paul’s letters. Come Holy Spirit lead us into all truth as we continue this journey forward. Holy Spirit lead us deeper into Jesus, we pray. In His mighty name, we ask. Amen.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Saturday October 9, 2021 (NIV)

Jeremiah 12:1-14:10

12 If I took you to court, Lord,
you would win.
But I still have questions about your justice.
Why do guilty persons enjoy success?
Why are evildoers so happy?
You plant them, and they take root;
they flourish and bear fruit.
You are always on their lips
but far from their hearts.
Yet you, Lord, you know me.
You see me.
You can tell that I love you.[a]
So drag them away
and butcher them like sheep.
Prepare them for the slaughterhouse.
How long will the land mourn
and the grass in the fields dry up?
The animals and birds are swept away
due to the evil of those in the land.
The people say,
“God doesn’t see what we’re up to!”

If you have raced with people and are worn out,
how will you compete with horses?
If you fall down in an open field,[b]
how will you survive in the forest along the Jordan?
Even your relatives, your very family,
are planning to trap you.
They are out to get you.
So don’t trust them,
even if they appear to be on your side.

God’s lament over Judah’s destruction

I have abandoned my house;
I have deserted my inheritance.
I have given the one I love
into the power of her enemies.
My inheritance has turned against me
like a lion in the forest;
she growls at me;
therefore, I have rejected her.
My inheritance has become
like a bird of prey,
surrounded and attacked.[c]
Go, gather all the wild animals for the feast.
10 Many shepherds have destroyed my vineyard;
they have trampled down my field;
they have reduced my treasured field
to a desolate wilderness.
11 They have devastated her;
desolate, she cries out to me in distress:
“The whole land is desolate,
and no one seems to care.”
12 Over all the desert roads
destroyers march;
for the sword of the Lord devours
from one end of the land to the other;
no one is safe.
13 They have sown wheat and reaped weeds;
they have worn themselves out for nothing.
They will be ashamed of their[d] harvest
on account of the Lord’s fierce anger.

14 The Lord proclaims: The evil nations have seized the land[e] that I gave my people Israel. I’m going to dig them up from their own lands, and I will dig up the people of Judah from among them. 15 And after I have dug them up, I will again have compassion on them and restore their inheritance and their land. 16 And then, if they will learn the ways of my people, to make a solemn pledge in my name, “As the Lord lives,” just as they once taught my people to swear to Baal, then they will be built up in the midst of my people. 17 But if they don’t listen, I will dig up that nation; yes, I will dig up and destroy, declares the Lord.

Jeremiah’s symbolic acts

13 The Lord proclaimed to me: Go and buy a linen undergarment. Wear it for a while without washing it. So I bought a linen undergarment, as the Lord told me, and I put it on. The Lord spoke to me again: Take the undergarment that you are wearing and go at once to the Euphrates and put it under a rock. So I went and buried it at the Euphrates,[f] as the Lord instructed. After a long time, the Lord said to me: Return to the Euphrates and dig up the undergarment that I commanded you to bury there. So I went to the Euphrates and I dug up the linen undergarment from the place I had buried it. But it was ruined and good for nothing.

Then the Lord’s word came to me: The Lord proclaims: In the same way I will ruin the brazen pride of Judah and Jerusalem! 10 Instead of listening to me, this wicked people follow their own willful hearts and pursue other gods, worshipping and serving them. They will become like this linen garment—good for nothing! 11 Just as a linen undergarment clings to the body, so I created the people of Israel and Judah to cling to me, declares the Lord, to be my people for my honor, praise, and grandeur. But they wouldn’t obey.

12 So deliver this word to them: The Lord the God of Israel proclaims: Every wine jug should be filled with wine. And they will answer you, “Don’t we already know that? Obviously every wine jug should be filled with wine!” 13 Then you should say to them: The Lord proclaims: I’m going to fill everyone who lives in this country with wine that makes them drunk, including the kings on David’s throne, the priests, the prophets, and all those living in Jerusalem. 14 And I will shatter every one of them, even parents and children, declares the Lord. I won’t take pity; I won’t have compassion; I will show no mercy when I destroy them.

15 Listen closely, don’t be arrogant,
for the Lord has spoken.
16 Honor the Lord your God,
before it’s too late,
before you stumble
on the mountain paths
in the evening shadows.
Then you will hope for light,
only to find darkness and gloom.
17 If you are too proud to listen,
I will go off alone
and cry my eyes out.
I will weep uncontrollably
because the Lord’s flock
will be dragged off into exile.
18 Tell the king and the queen mother:
Come down from your lofty place,
because your glorious crowns
will soon be removed from your heads.
19 The towns of the arid southern plain will be surrounded;
no one will get in or out;
all Judah will be taken into exile;
everyone will be led away.

20 Lift up your eyes
and see who is approaching from the north.
Where is the flock entrusted to you,
your beautiful flock?
21 What will you say when he appoints someone as head over you:
your defenders, your trusted allies?[g]
Won’t pain grip you
like that of a woman in labor?
22 And when you ask yourself,
Why have all these things happened to me?
it is because of your many sins
that you have been stripped and violated.
23 Can a Cushite change his skin
or a leopard its spots?
Neither can you do good
when doing evil comes so naturally.
24 So I will scatter you[h] like straw
that is blown away by the desert winds.
25 This is the future
that I have prepared for you,
declares the Lord,
because you have forgotten me
and trusted in lies.
26 I myself will pull up your skirt over your face
and expose your shame.
27 I have seen your adultery and lust,
your disgusting idols and shameless prostitution
on the hills and in the fields.
How terrible for you, Jerusalem!
How long will you remain dirty?

Destruction on the horizon

14 The Lord’s word to Jeremiah concerning the droughts:

Judah mourns;
her gates wither away.
The people fall to the ground in sorrow,
as sobs of Jerusalem ascend.
The rich send their servants for water,
but the wells run dry.
They return with empty jars,
ashamed, bewildered, and in despair.
Because the ground is cracked due to lack of rain,
the farmers too are ashamed;
they cover their heads.
Even the doe in the field
abandons her newborn,
for there’s no grass.
The wild donkeys stand on the well-traveled paths,
panting like thirsty dogs;
they go blind
since there’s nothing to eat.

Even though our sins testify against us,
help us, Lord, for your name’s sake.
We have turned away from you
and sinned against you time and again.
You are the hope of Israel,
its savior in times of trouble.
Why are you like a stranger in the land,
like a tourist spending only the night?
Why are you like one taken by surprise,
like a warrior unable to act?
Yet you are in our midst, Lord;
we are called by your name.
Don’t give up on us.

10 This is what the Lord proclaims about this people:
Since they have loved to wander off
and haven’t restrained themselves,
I[i] won’t accept them.
Now I will recall their wrongdoing
and punish their sin.

1 Thessalonians 1:1-2:8

Greeting

From Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy.

To the Thessalonians’ church that is in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Grace and peace to all of you.

Thanksgiving to God

We always thank God for all of you when we mention you constantly in our prayers. This is because we remember your work that comes from faith,[a] your effort that comes from love, and your perseverance that comes from hope in our Lord Jesus Christ in the presence of our God and Father. Brothers and sisters, you are loved by God, and we know that he has chosen you. We know this because our good news didn’t come to you just in speech but also with power and the Holy Spirit and with deep conviction. You know as well as we do what kind of people we were when we were with you, which was for your sake. You became imitators of us and of the Lord when you accepted the message that came from the Holy Spirit with joy in spite of great suffering. As a result you became an example to all the believers in Macedonia and Achaia. The message about the Lord rang out from you, not only in Macedonia and Achaia but in every place. The news about your faithfulness to God has spread so that we don’t even need to mention it. People tell us about what sort of welcome we had from you and how you turned to God from idols. As a result, you are serving[b] the living and true God, 10 and you are waiting for his Son from heaven. His Son is Jesus, who is the one he raised from the dead and who is the one who will rescue us from the coming wrath.

Paul’s ministry in Thessalonica

As you yourselves know, brothers and sisters, our visit with you wasn’t a waste of time. On the contrary, we had the courage through God to speak God’s good news in spite of a lot of opposition, although we had already suffered and were publicly insulted in Philippi, as you know. Our appeal isn’t based on false information, the wrong motives, or deception. Rather, we have been examined and approved by God to be trusted with the good news, and that’s exactly how we speak. We aren’t trying to please people, but we are trying to please God, who continues to examine our hearts. As you know, we never used flattery, and God is our witness that we didn’t have greedy motives. We didn’t ask for special treatment from people—not from you or from others— although we could have thrown our weight around as Christ’s apostles. Instead, we were gentle with you like a nursing mother caring for her own children. We were glad to share not only God’s good news with you but also our very lives because we cared for you so much.

Psalm 79

Psalm 79

A psalm of Asaph.

79 The nations have come into your inheritance, God!
They’ve defiled your holy temple.
They’ve made Jerusalem a bunch of ruins.
They’ve left your servants’ bodies
as food for the birds;
they’ve left the flesh of your faithful
to the wild animals of the earth.
They’ve poured out the blood of the faithful
like water all around Jerusalem,
and there’s no one left to bury them.
We’ve become a joke to our neighbors,
nothing but objects of ridicule
and disapproval to those around us.

How long will you rage, Lord? Forever?
How long will your anger burn like fire?
Pour out your wrath on the nations
who don’t know you,
on the kingdoms
that haven’t called on your name.
They’ve devoured Jacob
and demolished his pasture.
Don’t remember the iniquities of past generations;
let your compassion hurry to meet us
because we’ve been brought so low.
God of our salvation, help us
for the glory of your name!
Deliver us and cover our sins
for the sake of your name!
10 Why should the nations say,
“Where’s their God now?”
Let vengeance for the spilled blood of your servants
be known among the nations before our very eyes!
11 Let the prisoners’ groaning reach you.
With your powerful arm
spare those who are destined to die.
12 Pay back our neighbors seven times over,
right where it hurts,
for the insults they used on you, Lord.
13 We are, after all, your people
and the sheep of your very own pasture.
We will give you thanks forever;
we will proclaim your praises
from one generation to the next.

Proverbs 24:30-34

30 I happened upon the field of a lazy person,
by the vineyard of one with no sense.
31 Thorns grew all over it;
weeds covered the ground,
and the stone wall was falling down.
32 I observed this and took it to heart;
I saw it and learned a lesson.
33 “A little sleep, a little slumber,
a little lying down with folded arms”—
34 and poverty will come on you like a prowler,
deprivation like a man with a shield.

Jeremiah 10:1-11:23, Colossians 3:18-4:18, Psalm 78:56-72, Proverbs 24:28-29

Today is the 8th day of October, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian. It is a joy to be here with you today as we gather around the Global Campfire together and immerse ourselves in the Scriptures’, let them speak, let them speak for themselves. And so, today we will be heading back out into the book of Jeremiah before winding our way into Colossians in the New Testament. We’re reading from the Common English Bible this week, Jeremiah chapters 10 and 11 today.

Commentary:

Okay, so in the book of Jeremiah today, we read this: the rituals of the nations are hollow, a tree from the forest is chopped down and shaped by the craftsman’s tools, it’s overlaid with silver and gold and fastened securely with hammer and nails so it won’t fall over. They are no different than a scarecrow in a cucumber patch. They can’t speak, they must be carried because they can’t walk. Don’t be afraid of them because they can’t do harm or good. So, basically what’s being described here is the development or construction of an idol, for idol worship, right. An idol to be worshiped. Otherwise known as idolatry. And I don’t know if you’ve noticed on our journey so far, but it’s kind of hard to miss; idolatry is a major theme in the Scriptures, we encounter it all the time and the Scriptures do more than just frown on the behavior. It is a detestable thing. It is the worship of something false, a false God. And, the Bible pulls no punches about where that practice goes; it makes God angry and leads to destruction. And so, we could think you know, I can’t really imagine going down to my local Home Depot or whatever and getting some two-by-fours and some others nails and screws and some other stuff and making a God for myself that I’m actually going believe is real and worship and ask for help and clarity. And even if you did make something, it’s not the something that’s the bad or the evil right. So, a craftsman, even in the Scriptures who makes this thing, the Bible just says it’s a thing like, it’s a scarecrow. It can’t do good or bad. It’s a thing, it doesn’t walk around it has no motives like, it’s a thing and so it’s benign in that way. But once a person gives their heart in worship to that thing, that’s different, because when you give your heart in worship to something you are giving allegiance and fealty, but you are also humbling yourself and surrender to the lordship of the thing that you are worshiping. And you expect that your worship will result in something good for you, whether that be that you get rain for your crops or that the birth of your child is healthy or whatever. That is where the problem arises. That does not sit with the Lord most high at all, because God is like, that thing you made and you’re giving your heart to in worship is false, it can’t do anything for you but what it is doing is drawing you away from Me, you are believing that behind that idol that you are worshiping is some sort of deity that can do something for you and it’s not true. And so, we can understand when God says I am a jealous God; He is the only God. And so, to watch people give their hearts in worship to a false God, we understand…we understand the point here. However, if giving your heart and worship, humbling yourself under the lordship of something with an expectation of life, something life-giving to be returned to you, if that’s idolatry than just about anything is capable of being an idol. So, if we’re expecting anything outside of the relationship with God that we have, if we’re depending on anything outside of our intimacy with God, to bring us life, to fulfill us and to ultimately sustain us, then there’s a problem and it’s not going work, it’s not going anywhere. As we continue through the prophet’s, idolatry will continue to be a theme. In fact, it’s so prevalent that it’s easy to just kind of ignore and just look at, you know, their worshiping false idols, actual statues of some sort, some kind of construction, and we can just kind of check out, not realizing that it’s not the construction of the idol, it’s the worship of the idol. And so, we can look around in our own lives at man-made things that have no eyes, ears cannot walk, cannot talk, cannot do anything for us and look at the things that we’re depending on and invite the Holy Spirit into ways that we may be depending upon something for life outside of God, it is ultimately idolatry.

Prayer:

And so Holy Spirit, we invite You into that. It’s very clear in the Scriptures that this is not a good thing and so we want to be aggressive in our consideration here. This is an insidious thing that draws us away from You, and none of us are bowing down and giving our hearts in worship to a car, something else, but we can love these things as if they give us identity. Or we can place our hope in money or occupation or any number of things. Ultimately, believing that they are our source as opposed to, they are a gift from our Source, which is You. So, Holy Spirit help us to not have that all convoluted, to understand that we are utterly and hopelessly dependent upon You for life and that is how it should be. That’s not curse or a frightening thing. It’s a comfort, You are the most high God, You will not fail, You are our Father so we worship You, we humble ourselves under Your Lordship. We look to You for life, for fulfillment, for provision, You are the Source and everything good in our life comes from Your hand. Holy Spirit help us to not lose sight of that, not lose track of that and find ourselves dependent on something that cannot save. Help us Holy Spirit we pray, in the name of Jesus we ask. Amen.

Prayer and Encouragements:

Hi, I called in a couple months ago, I’m still not caught up, I’m in July, I’m in July, I’m in late July and I’m a new Christian, my name is Jesse I…I called in a couple months ago about some issues with my father and with my fiancé. And, I’m struggling right now, I’m struggling right now, I’m having a rough time at the moment. I’m not, I’m not okay. And I don’t know why but I’m not okay but I’m trying. But I’m praying and I listen to my Bible every day but temptations tough for me and I’m having a rough time letting go of a lot of it. I’m doing better but I’m not there yet. Please pray for me, please pray that I can maintain strength, that I can let go of temptation, that I can figure things out. I have a doctor’s appointment on Wednesday to hopefully, Lord, hopefully fix my ADHD, which I know might sound a little goofy to some people but it’s really been crippling for me. So, I go to the doctors to see if I can get something for it to correct it so I can function. Cause I can’t function right now. My brain is too scrambled right now. And I’m praying for healing and I’m praying for help. But yeah, this is Jesse, thanks DAB.

This is Kathy from Kentucky. I recently lost my part-time work from home job. It wasn’t paying that much and I wasn’t getting a lot of work but it was better than nothing. And I’m retired and I need something else to do, to bring in a little money and to make me feel useful. Cause social security doesn’t pay for everything. Money is very tight. I’m lonely and bored and broke most of the time. So, I ask your prayers for something to do, to get me out of the house and to bring in a little bit of money. Sometimes they don’t want to hire a person with white hair but I can work as well as the young people. Thank you.

Hello, Daily Audio Bible family, this is Sinner and Saint. I haven’t called in, in a while. But I love hearing you, and following along with Brian. I learn so much from this website or app. I’m calling today for prayer for a neighbor, a young woman named Sandra. She’s age 30-35 and has stage IV ovarian cancer and breast cancer. A few days ago, she had a double lumpectomy of her breasts. The doctors didn’t want to do a mastectomy because of the invasiveness and the healing needed and mostly because she’s stage IV with ovarian cancer. She’s already had a complete hysterectomy as well as chemo and radiation and she did well with these and they were successful. Now she’s recovering and hoping for more time and I pray in the name of Jesus our Lord and Savior that Sandra can feel His presence and His comfort and that her eyes and the eyes and hearts of her family can be opened to know You, Lord. And, please let her have a desire to know You, Lord. Please give her more time and the ability to love You. Please pray for her, my friends, my Daily Audio Bible, and I wish you a good day thanks.

Today is October 5th this is Marcio from New Jersey. I want to encourage everyone to remain in the word, stay in the word every day, every day, regardless of what you’re going through. Regardless of whatever sickness, whatever disease, whatever difficulty in your family, your children. Whatever the circumstances, remain steadfast in the word. The word of God is very, very powerful. The word of God is gonna build your faith. It’s gonna make you strong. You know, back in 2012, I shared this with you sometime back, I was diagnosed with Lupus. I heard, I hear a lot of people calling in with this disease. God healed me through His word, I remained in the word. You know, I was on dialysis, kidney failure, medication, everything but I kept the faith, I remained in the word, I listened to this program every day. Sitting in the hospital I listened to this program and God healed me. I’m telling you, stay in the word. Our God is too powerful, God is the healer. Jesus Christ is the healer. I know that the facts are there that you have that Lupus has been seen in your body, cancer or whatever, but I’m telling you, that the bible tells us that Jesus Christ is the Way, the Truth, the Truth and the Life. The truth, the truth is in Jesus Christ, the truth is not in the facts, the truth is not in your reality the truth is in God’s word and what God’s word says. Thank you so much Brian for this platform. I would not be here without it. I want to encourage everyone. Put your resources towards this platform, sew your seed here. This is good ground to receive a harvest, I’m telling you. Stay in the word, God bless you all. I love you.

Hi DAB, it’s Refined by the Fire in Ohio. There was two groups of people over the last few days, different calls that came in that have really just been on my heart to pray for. God’s Smile and Byron’s wife and Charlie’s wife Julie. Just everybody that deals with chronic illness and pain on a daily basis that, I know, I have a family member who also has a chronic illness and sometimes it’s hard because from the outside you can look to quote “just fine” and you know, you do just a great job of hiding the anguish and the torment that your body is putting you through. But I just wanted to say I’ve been praying for you guys. And then the other caller was Nellie, just saying she was losing sleep because she’s having a lot of dark and depressing thoughts and it just reminded me to just of everybody, whether it’s a season and a short period that we struggle with those things, or whether something you’ve struggled with your whole life, just now that you’re not alone in that. And there’s a verse from Isaiah that came to mind for all of us. That just says the steadfast Lord, the steadfast love of the Lord never ceases and His mercies never come to an end. They’re new every morning and great is His faithfulness. And it just reminded me just to send that out to each one of you guys that He loves us, He’s with us, and He’s carrying us and I love you guys so much. I’ll continue to pray for you.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Friday October 8, 2021 (NIV)

Jeremiah 10-11

Living God or human handiwork

10 Listen to the word that the Lord has spoken to you, people of Israel!
The Lord proclaims:
Don’t follow the ways of the nations
or be troubled by signs in the sky,
even though the nations are troubled by them.
The rituals of the nations are hollow:
a tree from the forest is chopped down
and shaped by the craftsman’s tools.
It’s overlaid with silver and gold,
and fastened securely with hammer and nails
so it won’t fall over.
They are no different than a scarecrow
in a cucumber patch:
they can’t speak;
they must be carried
because they can’t walk.
Don’t be afraid of them,
because they can’t do harm or good.
Lord, no one is like you!
You are great,
and great is your mighty name.
Who wouldn’t fear you,
king of the nations?
That is your due;
among all the wise of the nations
and in all their countries,
there is no one like you!
But they are both foolish and silly;
they offer nothing
because they are mere wood.
Covered with silver from Tarshish
and gold from Uphaz,
they are the work of a craftsman
and the hands of a goldsmith.
Clothed in blue and purple,
all of them nothing more than the work of artisans.
10 But the Lord is the true God!
He’s the living God and the everlasting king!
When he’s angry, the earth quakes;
the nations can’t endure his rage.

11 Tell them this: The gods who didn’t make the heavens and the earth will perish from the earth and from under the heavens.[a]

12 But God made the earth by his might;
he shaped the world by his wisdom,
crafted the skies by his knowledge.
13 At the sound of his voice,
the heavenly waters roar.
He raises the clouds from the ends of the earth.
He sends the lightning with the rain,
the wind from his treasuries.
14 Everyone is too foolish to understand;
every goldsmith is dishonored by his idols,
for their images are shams;
they aren’t alive.
15 They are a delusion, a charade;
at the appointed time they will vanish!
16 Jacob’s portion is utterly different
because God has formed all things,
including Israel, his very own people—
the Lord of heavenly forces is his name!

Get ready for exile!

17 Pack your bags and get ready to leave,
you who live under siege.[b]
18 The Lord proclaims:
I’m going to eject those who live in the land at this time;
I will badger them until they leave.[c]

19 How terrible for me, due to my injury;
my wound is terrible.
Yet I said to myself:
This is my sickness,
and I must bear it.
20 But now my tent is destroyed;
all its ropes are cut,
and my children are gone for good.
There’s no one left to set up my tent frame
and to attach the fabric.
21 The shepherd kings have lost their senses
and don’t seek answers from the Lord.
That is why they have failed
and their flock is scattered.
22 Listen! The sound is getting louder,
a mighty uproar from the land of the north;
it will reduce the towns of Judah to ruins,
a den for wild dogs.
23 I know, Lord, that our lives are not our own,
that we’re not able to direct our paths.
24 So correct me, Lord, but with justice,
not in your anger,
or else you will reduce me to nothing.
25 Pour out your wrath on the nations
that ignore you
and on the people
who don’t call on you,
since they have devoured Jacob;
they have devoured him completely
and ruined his country.

Judah’s broken covenant with God

11 Jeremiah received the Lord’s word: Listen to the terms of this covenant and proclaim them to the people of Judah and the citizens of Jerusalem. Say to them: This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: Cursed are those who don’t heed the terms of this covenant that I commanded your ancestors when I bought them out of the land of Egypt, that iron crucible, saying, Obey me and observe all that I instruct you. Then you will be my people and I, even I, will be your God. I will fulfill my solemn pledge that I made to your ancestors to give them a land full of milk and honey, as is the case today.

And I replied, “As you say, Lord!”

The Lord said to me: Announce all these words in the towns of Judah and on the streets of Jerusalem: Obey the terms of this covenant and perform them. I repeatedly and tirelessly warned your ancestors when I brought them out of the land of Egypt to this very day, saying, Obey me. But they didn’t listen or pay attention; they followed their own willful ambitions. So I brought upon them all the punishments I prescribed for violating this covenant—for refusing to obey.

The Lord said to me: A conspiracy is taking place among the people of Judah and residents of Jerusalem. 10 They have returned to the sins of their ancestors who refused to obey my words. They too are following other gods and serving them. The people of Israel and the people of Judah have broken my covenant that I made with their ancestors.

11 Therefore, the Lord proclaims: I will bring upon them a disaster from which they won’t be able to escape. They will cry out to me, but I won’t listen to them. 12 Then the people of Judah and those living in Jerusalem will call upon the gods they worship,[d] but they won’t save them when disaster strikes. 13 You have as many gods as you have towns, Judah, and you have as many shameful altars for worshipping Baal as you have streets in Jerusalem.

14 As for you, don’t pray for these people, don’t cry out or plead for them, for I won’t listen when they cry out to me on account of their distress.

15 What are my loved ones doing in my temple
while working out their many evil schemes?
Can sacred offerings cancel your sin
so that you revel in your evil deeds?[e]
16 The Lord named you,
“A blossoming olive tree, fair and fruitful”;
but with the blast of a powerful storm
he will set it ablaze,
until its branches are completely consumed.[f]

17 The Lord of heavenly forces who planted you has announced disaster for you, because the people of Israel and Judah have done evil and made me angry by worshipping Baal.

Jeremiah’s lament

18 The Lord informed me and I knew.
Then he helped me see what they were up to.
19 I was like a young lamb led to the slaughter;
I didn’t realize that they were planning
their schemes against me:
“Let’s destroy the tree with its fruit;
let’s cut him off from the land of the living
so that even any knowledge of him will be wiped out.”
20 Lord of heavenly forces, righteous judge,
who tests the heart and mind,
let me see your revenge upon them,
because I have committed my case to you.

21 This is what the Lord says concerning the men from Anathoth who seek your life and say, “Don’t prophesy in the Lord’s name or else you will die at our hands.” 22 Therefore, the Lord of heavenly forces proclaims, I’m going to punish them. Their young men will die in war, and their sons and daughters will die by famine. 23 No one will be left because I will bring disaster upon the men of Anathoth when their time comes.

Colossians 3:18-4

18 Wives, submit to your husbands in a way that is appropriate in the Lord. 19 Husbands, love your wives and don’t be harsh with them. 20 Children, obey your parents in everything, because this pleases the Lord. 21 Parents, don’t provoke your children in a way that ends up discouraging them.

22 Slaves, obey your masters on earth in everything. Don’t just obey like people pleasers when they are watching. Instead, obey with the single motivation of fearing the Lord. 23 Whatever you do, do it from the heart for the Lord and not for people. 24 You know that you will receive an inheritance as a reward. You serve the Lord Christ. 25 But evildoers will receive their reward for their evil actions. There is no discrimination.

Masters, be just and fair to your slaves, knowing that you yourselves have a master in heaven.

Keep on praying and guard your prayers with thanksgiving. At the same time, pray for us also. Pray that God would open a door for the word so we can preach the secret plan[a] of Christ—which is why I’m in chains. Pray that I might be able to make it as clear as I ought to when I preach. Act wisely toward outsiders, making the most of the opportunity. Your speech should always be gracious and sprinkled with insight so that you may know how to respond to every person.

Final greeting

Tychicus, our dearly loved brother, faithful minister, and fellow slave in the Lord, will inform you about everything that has happened to me. This is why I sent him to you, so that you’ll know all about us and so he can encourage your hearts. I sent him with Onesimus, our faithful and dearly loved brother, who is one of you. They will let you know about everything here.

10 Aristarchus, my fellow prisoner, says hello to you. So does Mark, Barnabas’ cousin (you received instructions about him; if he comes to you, welcome him). 11 Jesus, called Justus, also says hello. These are my only fellow workers for God’s kingdom who are Jewish converts. They have been an encouragement to me. 12 Epaphras, who is one of you, says hello. He’s a slave of Christ Jesus who always wrestles for you in prayers so that you will stand firm and be fully mature and complete in the entire will of God. 13 I can vouch for him that he has worked hard for you and for those in Laodicea and Hierapolis. 14 Luke, the dearly loved physician, and Demas say hello.

15 Say hello to the brothers and sisters in Laodicea, along with Nympha and the church that meets in her house. 16 After this letter has been read to you publicly, make sure that the church in Laodicea reads it and that you read the one from Laodicea. 17 And tell Archippus, “See to it that you complete the ministry that you received in the Lord.”

18 I, Paul, am writing this greeting personally. Remember that I’m in prison. Grace be with you.

Psalm 78:56-72

56 But they tested and defied the Most High God;
they didn’t pay attention to his warnings.
57 They turned away, became faithless just like their ancestors;
they twisted away like a defective bow.
58 They angered God with their many shrines;
they angered him with their idols.
59 God heard and became enraged;
he rejected Israel utterly.
60 God abandoned the sanctuary at Shiloh,
the tent where he had lived with humans.
61 God let his power be held captive,
let his glory go to the enemy’s hand.
62 God delivered his people up to the sword;
he was enraged at his own possession.
63 Fire devoured his young men,
and his young women had no wedding songs.
64 God’s priests were killed by the sword,
and his widows couldn’t even cry.
65 But then my Lord woke up—
as if he’d been sleeping!
Like a warrior shaking off wine,
66 God beat back his foes;
he made them an everlasting disgrace.

67 God rejected the tent of Joseph
and didn’t choose the tribe of Ephraim.
68 Instead, he chose the tribe of Judah,
the mountain of Zion, which he loves.
69 God built his sanctuary like the highest heaven
and like the earth, which he established forever.
70 And God chose David, his servant,
taking him from the sheepfolds.
71 God brought him from shepherding nursing ewes
to shepherd his people Jacob,
to shepherd his inheritance, Israel.
72 David shepherded them with a heart of integrity;
he led them with the skill of his hands.

28 Don’t be a witness against your neighbor without reason;
don’t deceive with your lips.

I’ll pay them back for their actions.”

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Thursday October 7, 2021 (NIV)

Jeremiah 8:8-9:26

How can you say, “We are wise;
we possess the Lord’s Instruction,”
when the lying pen of the scribes has surely distorted it?
The wise will be shamed and shocked
when they are caught.
Look, they have rejected the Lord’s word;
what kind of wisdom is that?
10 Therefore, I will give their wives to others
and their fields to their captors.
From the least to the greatest,
all are eager to profit.
From prophet to priest,
all trade in falsehood.
11 They treat the wound of my people
as if it were nothing:
“All is well, all is well,” they insist,
when in fact nothing is well.
12 They should be ashamed
of their detestable practices,
but they have no shame;
they don’t even blush!
Therefore, they will fall among the fallen
and stumble when disaster arrives,
declares the Lord.
13 I will put an end to them,[a]
declares the Lord;
there are no grapes on the vine,
no figs on the tree,
only withered leaves.
They have squandered what I have given them![b]

A lament for God’s people

14 Why are we sitting here?
Come, let’s go to the fortified towns
and meet our doom there.
The Lord our God has doomed us
by giving us poisoned water to drink,
because we have sinned against the Lord!
15 We longed for relief,
but received none;
for a time of healing,
but found only terror.
16 The snorting of their horses can be heard as far as Dan;
the neighing of their stallions makes the whole land tremble.
They come to devour the land and everything in it,
towns and people alike.
17 See, I’m sending serpents against you,
vipers that you can’t charm,
and they will bite you,
declares the Lord.
18 No healing,
only grief;
my heart is broken.[c]
19 Listen to the weeping of my people
all across the land:
“Isn’t the Lord in Zion?
Is her king no longer there?”
Why then did they anger me with their images,
with pointless foreign gods?
20 “The harvest is past,
the summer has ended,
yet we aren’t saved.”
21 Because my people are crushed,
I am crushed;
darkness and despair overwhelm me.

What to do with God’s people

22 Is there no balm in Gilead?
Is there no physician there?
Why then have my people
not been restored to health?

[d] If only my head were a spring of water,
and my eyes a fountain of tears,
I would weep day and night
for the wounds of my people.
[e] If only I could flee for shelter in the desert,
to leave my people
and forget them—
for they are all adulterers,
a bunch of crooks.
They bend their tongues like bows
to spew out lies;
they are renowned in the land,
but not for truth.
They go from bad to worse.
They don’t know me!
declares the Lord.
Be wary of your friends!
Don’t trust your sibling![f]
Every sibling is a cheater,
and every friend traffics in slander.
One cheats the other;
no one tells the truth;
they train themselves to lie;
they wear themselves out by doing wrong.
You live in a world of deceit,
and in their deceit
they refuse to know me,[g]
declares the Lord.
Therefore, the Lord of heavenly forces proclaims:
I’m going to refine and test them,
for what else can I do with my people?
Their tongue is a lethal arrow;
their words are deceitful.
They wish their neighbors well,
but in their hearts plot their ruin.
Shouldn’t I punish them for this?
declares the Lord;
shouldn’t I avenge such a nation?
10 I will weep and wail for the mountains,
and lament for the grazing lands in the wilderness.
They are dried up and deserted;
no sound of the flocks is heard;
no sign of birds or animals is seen;
all have vanished.
11 I will reduce Jerusalem to ruins,
a den for wild dogs.
I will make the towns of Judah a wasteland, without inhabitant.
12 Who is wise enough to understand this?
Who has been taught by the Lord
and can therefore explain it?
Why has the land been reduced to rubble
and laid waste like a desert,
with no one passing through?

13 The Lord says: It is because they have abandoned my Instruction that I gave them, and haven’t obeyed or followed it. 14 Instead, they have followed their own willful hearts and have gone after the Baals, as their ancestors taught them. 15 Therefore, this is what the Lord of heavenly forces, the God of Israel, says: I’m going to feed this people bitter food and give them poison to drink. 16 I will scatter them among nations about whom neither they nor their ancestors have ever heard. I will pursue them with the sword until all are gone.

17 The Lord of heavenly forces proclaims:
Pay attention!
Summon the women who mourn,
let them come;
send for those best trained,
let them come.
18 Hurry!
Let them weep for us
so that our eyes fill up with tears
and water streams down.
19 The sound of sobbing
is heard from Zion:
“We’re devastated!
We’re so ashamed!
We have to leave the land
and abandon our homes!”
20 Women, hear the Lord’s word.
Listen closely to the word
from his mouth:
teach your daughters to mourn;
teach each other to grieve.
21 Death has climbed through our windows;
it has entered our fortresses
to eliminate children from the streets,
the youth from the squares.
22 Declare what the Lord says:
Dead bodies will lie
like dung on the fields,
like bundles of grain after the harvest,
with no one to pick them up.
23 The Lord proclaims:
the learned should not boast of their knowledge,
nor warriors boast of their might,
nor the rich boast of their wealth.
24 No, those who boast should boast in this:
that they understand and know me.
I am the Lord who acts with kindness,
justice, and righteousness in the world,
and I delight in these things,
declares the Lord.

25 The time is coming, declares the Lord, when I will deal with everyone who is physically circumcised: 26 whether they are Egyptians or Judeans, Edomites or Ammonites, Moabites or the desert dwellers who cut the hair on their foreheads. All these nations are really uncircumcised; even the people of Israel are uncircumcised in heart.

Colossians 3:1-17

Your life hidden in Christ

Therefore, if you were raised with Christ, look for the things that are above where Christ is sitting at God’s right side. Think about the things above and not things on earth. You died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, is revealed, then you also will be revealed with him in glory.

So put to death the parts of your life that belong to the earth, such as sexual immorality, moral corruption, lust, evil desire, and greed (which is idolatry). The wrath of God is coming upon disobedient people because of these things. You used to live this way, when you were alive to these things. But now set aside these things, such as anger, rage, malice, slander, and obscene language. Don’t lie to each other. Take off the old human nature with its practices 10 and put on the new nature, which is renewed in knowledge by conforming to the image of the one who created it. 11 In this image there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcised nor uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave nor free, but Christ is all things and in all people.

12 Therefore, as God’s choice, holy and loved, put on compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. 13 Be tolerant with each other and, if someone has a complaint against anyone, forgive each other. As the Lord forgave you, so also forgive each other. 14 And over all these things put on love, which is the perfect bond of unity. 15 The peace of Christ must control your hearts—a peace into which you were called in one body. And be thankful people. 16 The word of Christ must live in you richly. Teach and warn each other with all wisdom by singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs. Sing to God with gratitude in your hearts. 17 Whatever you do, whether in speech or action, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus and give thanks to God the Father through him.

Psalm 78:32-55

32 But in spite of all that, they kept sinning
and had no faith in God’s wondrous works.
33 So God brought their days to an end,
like a puff of air,
and their years in total ruin.
34 But whenever God killed them, they went after him!
They would turn and earnestly search for God.
35 They would remember that God was their rock,
that the Most High was their redeemer.
36 But they were just flattering him with lip service.
They were lying to him with their tongues.
37 Their hearts weren’t firmly set on him;
they weren’t faithful to his covenant.
38 But God, being compassionate,
kept forgiving their sins,
kept avoiding destruction;
he took back his anger so many times,
wouldn’t stir up all his wrath!
39 God kept remembering that they were just flesh,
just breath that passes and doesn’t come back.

40 How often they rebelled against God in the wilderness
and distressed him in the desert!
41 Time and time again they tested God,
provoking the holy one of Israel.
42 They didn’t remember God’s power—
the day when he saved them from the enemy;
43 how God performed his signs in Egypt,
his marvelous works in the field of Zoan.
44 God turned their rivers into blood;
they couldn’t drink from their own streams.
45 God sent swarms against them to eat them up,
frogs to destroy them.
46 God handed over their crops to caterpillars,
their land’s produce to locusts.
47 God killed their vines with hail,
their sycamore trees with frost.
48 God delivered their cattle over to disease,[a]
their herds to plagues.
49 God unleashed his burning anger against them—
fury, indignation, distress,
a troop of evil messengers.
50 God blazed a path for his wrath.
He didn’t save them from death,
but delivered their lives over to disease.
51 God struck down all of Egypt’s oldest males;
in Ham’s tents, he struck their pride and joy.
52 God led his own people out like sheep,
guiding them like a flock in the wilderness.
53 God led them in safety—they were not afraid!
But the sea engulfed their enemies!
54 God brought them to his holy territory,
to the mountain that his own strong hand had acquired.
55 God drove out the nations before them
and apportioned property for them;
he settled Israel’s tribes in their tents.

Jeremiah 8:8-9:26, Colossians 3:1-17, Psalms 78:32-55, Proverbs 24:27

Today is the 7th day of October welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I am Brian it is wonderful to be here with you today as we continue the journey…the journey through this week and month and year and the Bible all together around the global campfire. And our next step, the one we’re going to take today leads us back into the book of Jeremiah chapter 8 verse 8 through 9:26.

Commentary:

Okay. I look forward to this reading in Colossians each year because there’s such a stark juxtaposition…like a stark contrast. Such clarity comes from the contrast that we…it’s really, really hard to not look yourself in the mirror and go, “okay. I got work to do.” Let’s approach this with the idea of like a recipe. So, my wife Jill who does Daily Audio Bible Chronological, she is, she is a gourmet fantastic cook, a really gifted, talented cook. And, so, yeah, she can follow recipes, but she can make stuff up on the fly as well, but she’s developed this talent for kinda understanding what she’s mixing together and what the outcome is supposed to be. So, you know, she doesn’t make up, for example, like green beans and taste the green beans and they’re all nice and…and decide, “you know what we need is peanut butter, right? Or, “you know what we need with these green beans is peanut butter and sauerkraut.” I don’t know, maybe that would taste good. It sounds like it would taste disgusting, at least to me. So, she’s not mixing things aren’t gonna work. And in effect, that is Paul’s point in our reading from Colossians today. Why are we mixing things that are going to not work, that are gonna be horrible? So, if we stick to the analogy of a recipe or of cooking then let’s just imagine we’re gathering all of our ingredients for a dish that we’re gonna make and the dish that we’re gonna make consists of sexual immorality, moral corruption, lust, evil desire and greed, anger, rage, malice, slander, and obscene language and dishonesty or lying. Take all that and whip that up in a bowl and what have you got? Take that and whip it up in your heart and what have you wrought? Like, what is that? It sounds horrible, but at least it sounds somewhat consistent. But let’s say the next day we’re gonna…we’re gonna make a different recipe. So, we gather those ingredients, and this dish has compassion, humility, kindness, gentleness, patience, tolerance, forgiveness, peace and love. And we whip that up and that sounds like…that sounds like what we need. That sounds like nourishment for the soul. So, of the two sets of ingredients what do you want to cook up? So, that first set of ingredients, Paul says that’s what we have died to. We have no business having those ingredients around. That second list is what we were resurrected into, the…the way things are supposed to be. If we want to hold the analogy, it’s what we should be cooking with and what we should be nourishing ourselves and everyone that we love and everyone that we don’t love with. Where it gets tricky and where, you know, we…we get confronted in our own lives is with the…the truth, with the fact that often we’re trying to mix the two sets of ingredients into something that’s nourishing and delicious. But it’s not. Like can we be in perfect peace while lusting? Can we forgive while raging? Can we be gentle and malicious at the same time? Can we love and slander? So, you get the picture. These things don’t go together and mixing them together doesn’t work and that’s Paul’s point. It’s not gonna work. One set of ingredients or characteristics is associated with who you were, and one set of ingredients or characteristics is associated with who you are in Christ, and they don’t go together. In fact, there so separated that, according to Paul, those first set of characteristics they’re dead. They can’t be alive while the other ones are at work in us. And, so, that should explain an awful lot when we try to whip up these recipes that leave us full of anxiety or bitterness, or resentment, or any of the things that come from…well that come from ingredient list A. They don’t go together any better than green beans and sauerkraut and peanut butter. So, we’re sort of left with a little bit of a stark question. What are we doing here? What are we whipping up? What are we…what we using to construct our lives and nourish ourselves with? Like healthy and destructive, they don't…they don’t go together. And there’s obvious correlations here. We could bring this into our…our physical bodies. We can bring this into our physical worlds since we’re talking about recipes. Like the…the things that are ultimately going to kill us, the things that are not healthy for our bodies, if that is our diet, we are dying sooner than we have too. However, if the things that will nourish us and keep us healthy and protected are our diet then we’re gonna have a better life. Like, I know it’s a constant struggle because of all of the opportunity that’s out in front of us to consume things, but the fact is, health begets health. And Paul is essentially showing us what should be incorporated into our lives to be healthy spiritually. And, so, let’s give it some time some thought today. What are…just hold of the metaphor. What are…what are we cooking with? What are we whipping up in our hearts that is supposed to nourish our souls? What are we consuming? What are we mixing? And if we’re mixing things that won’t work together then let’s at least acknowledge why it’s not working instead of blaming everything else. Let’s just understand that what we’re trying to do isn’t going to work because they don’t go together.

Prayer:

Jesus, we need You in this. I mean there’s just all kinds of challenges and we are in a very very fast-paced world. And so often we’re not…we’re not slowed down enough to do anything but react. And so often when we do react we’re grabbing the old recipes, we’re grabbing ingredients from the old recipes and just reacting when You’ve given us permission to be intentional and slow the whole thing down and prepare in advance and live in the truth and live with these ingredients, these characteristics that are nourishing, nourishing to our own soul but nourishing to anyone who comes into contact with them. Help us Lord to have mercy, to be kind, to be humble, to be gentle, to be patient, to forgive, to walk in peace, to exude love. Let this be what we are and are known for we ask in Your precious name. Amen.
