The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Thursday May 21, 2020 (NIV)

1 Samuel 29-31

Philistines Reject David

29 The Philistines(A) brought all their military units together at Aphek(B) while Israel was camped by the spring in Jezreel.(C) 2 As the Philistine leaders were passing in review with their units of hundreds and thousands, David and his men(D) were passing in review behind them with Achish. 3 Then the Philistine commanders asked, “What are these Hebrews doing here?”

Achish answered the Philistine commanders, “That is David, servant of King Saul of Israel. He has been with me a considerable period of time.[a] From the day he defected until today, I’ve found no fault with him.”(E)

4 The Philistine commanders, however, were enraged with Achish and told him, “Send that man back and let him return to the place you assigned him.(F) He must not go down with us into battle only to become our adversary during the battle.(G) What better way could he ingratiate himself with his master than with the heads of our men? 5 Isn’t this the David they sing about during their dances:

Saul has killed his thousands,
but David his tens of thousands?” (H)

6 So Achish summoned David and told him, “As the Lord lives, you are an honorable man. I think it is good[b] to have you fighting[c] in this unit with me, because I have found no fault in you from the day you came to me until today.(I) But the leaders don’t think you are reliable. 7 Now go back quietly and you won’t be doing anything the Philistine leaders think is wrong.”

8 “But what have I done?” (J) David replied to Achish. “From the first day I entered your service until today, what have you found against your servant to keep me from going to fight against the enemies of my lord the king?”

9 Achish answered David, “I’m convinced that you are as reliable as an angel of God.(K) But the Philistine commanders have said, ‘He must not go into battle with us.’(L) 10 So get up early in the morning, you and your masters’ servants who came with you.[d](M) When you’ve all gotten up early, go as soon as it’s light.” 11 So David and his men got up early in the morning to return to the land of the Philistines. And the Philistines went up to Jezreel.

David’s Defeat of the Amalekites

30 David and his men(N) arrived in Ziklag(O) on the third day. The Amalekites(P) had raided the Negev and attacked and burned Ziklag. 2 They also had kidnapped the women and everyone[e] in it from youngest to oldest. They had killed no one but had carried them off(Q) as they went on their way.

3 When David and his men arrived at the town, they found it burned. Their wives, sons, and daughters had been kidnapped. 4 David and the troops with him wept loudly until they had no strength left to weep. 5 David’s two wives,(R) Ahinoam the Jezreelite and Abigail the widow of Nabal the Carmelite, had also been kidnapped. 6 David was in an extremely difficult position because the troops talked about stoning him,(S) for they were all very bitter over the loss of their sons and daughters. But David found strength in the Lord his God.(T)

7 David said to the priest Abiathar son of Ahimelech, “Bring me the ephod.”(U) So Abiathar brought it to him, 8 and David asked the Lord,(V) “Should I pursue these raiders? Will I overtake them?” (W)

The Lord replied to him, “Pursue them, for you will certainly overtake them and rescue the people.”(X)

9 So David and the six hundred men with him(Y) went. They came to the Wadi Besor, where some stayed behind.(Z) 10 David and four hundred of the men continued the pursuit, while two hundred stopped because they were too exhausted to cross the Wadi Besor.

11 David’s men found an Egyptian in the open country and brought him to David. They gave him some bread to eat and water to drink. 12 Then they gave him some pressed figs and two clusters of raisins. After he ate he revived,(AA) for he hadn’t eaten food or drunk water for three days and three nights.

13 Then David said to him, “Who do you belong to? Where are you from?”

“I’m an Egyptian, the slave of an Amalekite man,” he said. “My master abandoned me when I got sick three days ago. 14 We raided the south country of the Cherethites,(AB) the territory of Judah, and the south country of Caleb,(AC) and we burned Ziklag.”(AD)

15 David then asked him, “Will you lead me to these raiders?”

He said, “Swear to me by God that you won’t kill me or turn me over to my master, and I will lead you to them.”

16 So he led him, and there were the Amalekites, spread out over the entire area, eating, drinking, and celebrating because of the great amount of plunder(AE) they had taken from the land of the Philistines and the land of Judah. 17 David slaughtered them from twilight until the evening of the next day.(AF) None of them escaped, except four hundred young men who got on camels and fled.(AG)

18 David recovered everything the Amalekites had taken; he also rescued his two wives. 19 Nothing of theirs was missing from the youngest to the oldest, including the sons and daughters, and all the plunder the Amalekites had taken. David got everything back.(AH) 20 He took all the flocks and herds, which were driven ahead of the other livestock, and the people shouted, “This is David’s plunder!” (AI)

21 When David came to the two hundred men who had been too exhausted to go with him and had been left at the Wadi Besor,(AJ) they came out to meet him and to meet the troops with him. When David approached the men, he greeted them, 22 but all the corrupt and worthless men among those who had gone with David argued, “Because they didn’t go with us, we will not give any of the plunder we recovered to them except for each man’s wife and children. They may take them and go.”

23 But David said, “My brothers, you must not do this with what the Lord has given us. He protected us and handed over to us the raiders who came against us. 24 Who can agree to your proposal? The share of the one who goes into battle is to be the same as the share of the one who remains with the supplies. They will share equally.”(AK) 25 And it has been so from that day forward. David established this policy[f] as a law and an ordinance for Israel and it still continues today.

26 When David came to Ziklag, he sent some of the plunder to his friends, the elders of Judah, saying, “Here is a gift for you(AL) from the plunder of the Lord’s enemies.”(AM) 27 He sent gifts[g] to those in Bethel,(AN) in Ramoth of the Negev,(AO) and in Jattir;(AP) 28 to those in Aroer,(AQ) in Siphmoth,(AR) and in Eshtemoa;(AS) 29 to those in Racal, in the towns of the Jerahmeelites,(AT) and in the towns of the Kenites;(AU) 30 to those in Hormah,(AV) in Bor-ashan,(AW) and in Athach; 31 to those in Hebron,(AX) and to those in all the places where David and his men had roamed.(AY)

The Death of Saul and His Sons

31 The Philistines fought against Israel,(AZ) and Israel’s men fled from them and were killed on Mount Gilboa.(BA) 2 The Philistines pursued Saul and his sons and killed his sons, Jonathan, Abinadab, and Malchishua. 3 When the battle intensified against Saul,(BB) the archers found him and severely wounded him.[h] 4 Then Saul said to his armor-bearer,(BC) “Draw your sword and run me through with it, or these uncircumcised men(BD) will come and run me through and torture me!” But his armor-bearer would not do it because he was terrified. Then Saul took his sword and fell on it.(BE) 5 When his armor-bearer saw that Saul was dead, he also fell on his own sword and died with him. 6 So on that day, Saul died together with his three sons, his armor-bearer, and all his men.

7 When the men of Israel on the other side of the valley and on the other side of the Jordan saw that Israel’s men had fled and that Saul and his sons were dead, they abandoned the cities and fled. So the Philistines came and settled in them.

8 The next day when the Philistines came to strip the slain, they found Saul and his three sons dead on Mount Gilboa. 9 They cut off Saul’s head, stripped off his armor, and sent messengers throughout the land of the Philistines to spread the good news(BF) in the temples of their idols(BG) and among the people. 10 Then they put his armor in the temple of the Ashtoreths(BH) and hung his body(BI) on the wall of Beth-shan.(BJ)

11 When the residents of Jabesh-gilead(BK) heard what the Philistines had done to Saul, 12 all their brave men(BL) set out, journeyed all night, and retrieved the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons from the wall of Beth-shan. When they arrived at Jabesh, they burned the bodies there.(BM) 13 Afterward, they took their bones and buried them under the tamarisk tree(BN) in Jabesh(BO) and fasted seven days.

John 11:55-12:19

55 Now the Jewish Passover(A) was near, and many went up to Jerusalem(B) from the country to purify themselves before the Passover. 56 They were looking for Jesus and asking one another as they stood in the temple,(C) “What do you think? He won’t come to the festival,(D) will he?” 57 The chief priests(E) and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone knew where he was, he should report it so that they could arrest him.

The Anointing at Bethany

12 Six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany(F) where Lazarus[a] was, the one Jesus had raised from the dead.(G) 2 So(H) they gave a dinner for him there; Martha(I) was serving them, and Lazarus was one of those reclining at the table with him. 3 Then Mary took a pound of perfume, pure and expensive nard, anointed Jesus’s feet, and wiped his feet with her hair.(J) So the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.

4 Then one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot(K) (who was about to betray him), said, 5 “Why wasn’t this perfume sold for three hundred denarii[b](L) and given to the poor?” 6 He didn’t say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief.(M) He was in charge of the money-bag and would steal part of what was put in it.

7 Jesus answered, “Leave her alone; she has kept it for the day of my burial.(N) 8 For you always have the poor with you,(O) but you do not always have me.”

The Decision to Kill Lazarus

9 Then a large crowd of the Jews learned he was there. They came not only because of Jesus but also to see Lazarus, the one he had raised from the dead.(P) 10 But the chief priests had decided to kill Lazarus also, 11 because he was the reason many of the Jews were deserting them[c] and believing in Jesus.

The Triumphal Entry

12 The(Q) next day, when the large crowd that had come to the festival heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, 13 they took palm branches(R) and went out to meet him. They kept shouting:

“Hosanna!(S)
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord[d](T) —the King of Israel!” (U)

14 Jesus found a young donkey(V) and sat on it, just as it is written:

15 Do not be afraid,(W)
Daughter Zion. Look, your King is coming,
sitting on a donkey’s colt.[e](X)

16 His disciples did not understand these things at first. However, when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things had been written about him(Y) and that they had done these things to him.

17 Meanwhile, the crowd, which had been with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb(Z) and raised him from the dead, continued to testify.[f] 18 This is also why the crowd met him, because they heard he had done this sign. 19 Then the Pharisees said to one another, “You see? You’ve accomplished nothing. Look, the world has gone after him!” (AA)

Thanksgiving for Victory

1 Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;
his faithful love endures forever.(A)
2 Let Israel say,
“His faithful love endures forever.”(B)
3 Let the house of Aaron say,
“His faithful love endures forever.”(C)
4 Let those who fear the Lord say,
“His faithful love endures forever.”(D)

5 I called to the Lord in distress;(E)

6 The Lord is for me; I will not be afraid.
What can a mere mortal do to me?(G)
7 The Lord is my helper;

Proverbs 15:24-26

24 For the prudent the path of life leads upward,
so that he may avoid going down to Sheol.

25 The Lord tears apart the house of the proud,

1 Samuel 29:1-31:13, John 11:55-12:19, Psalms 118:1-18, Proverbs 15:24-26

Today is the 21st day of May welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I am Brian and it is, like every single day, great to be here with you. What an honor to…yeah…just take our place around the Global Campfire, release everything else that’s going on and just exhale and take this time to be at peace. So, our adventures been taking us through the book of first Samuel, which has introduced us to Samuel, to Saul, Israel’s first King and to David, who Saul has tried to kill and number of occasions, forcing David to defect to the Philistines. Now the Philistines and the Israelites are gonna go into battle and David is expected to go and fight for the Philistines against his countrymen. While Saul, the king of Israel has visited us spiritist, a medium, and called up Samuel from beyond the grave who has told Saul that…well…in less than a day he will also be in the realm of the dead. So, how’s that for a set up for today’s reading because that’s right where we find ourselves. We’re reading from the Christian Standard Bible this week. First Samuel chapters 29, 30, and 31 today.

Commentary:

Okay, so the…the portion of road that we’re walking down right now through the book of first Samuel is very dramatic, for that matter, as is what’s going on in the book of John in the New Testament. So, I mean, just today, Saul, the king of Israel, the very, very first King of Israel dies in battle. We’ve been walking alongside Saul since before he knew he was gonna be king back out looking for donkeys that had disappeared and coming back home finding out “you’re gonna be anointed the king of Israel.” The whole story. We’ve followed this story and we’ve just basically watched Saul disintegrate page by page. He’s dead now. And David, the primary person that Saul wanted to kill was about to go into battle, right, and then they were sent away. And they were sent when they had to walk three days. Like that’s how far it was and that’s right. David was staying in Ziklag. This is a place down in the South in a transition zone by the desert. They had to walk all the way up into the Jezreel Valley near the Galilee. So, yeah, that’s a long walk. This is the same…not exact same walk…but the same kind of walk Jesus would walk when He came down from the Galilea to go to Jerusalem. It’s a long ways. It’s a long ways to walk. So, David and his men. they get back to Ziklag and find out it’s burned to the ground. Like the Amalekites have raided and everything is gone. So, he has to deal with that in the exhaustion from like a three day march up to the battle and a three-day march back. And, so, they have to go to battle on their own in the South with the Amalekites, even as the Israelites and the Philistines are doing battle in the north where Saul has been killed. David doesn’t know this. Like David doesn’t know yet that Saul is dead. And we can read the story and go, “well good. He’s dead. Now David can become the king.” And we may even just assume, “like, that’s just how it goes.” But that’s not just how it goes as we’ll see in the days ahead. The king has died. Three of his sons, successors have died. And you don’t just elect a new king, right? It’s the house of Saul. So, who in his family? And a lot of times what you see in these ancient battles, right, is the destruction of the house of the king, like the wiping out of the family altogether so that there can be a new dynasty established. So, to assume that the nation of Israel is just gonna fall in line with the David, that's…that’s not exactly how it’s gonna go. It's…there’s some steps out in front of us and in those steps, we learn more and more things about ourselves.

Meanwhile, the religious elite in the book of John are looking for Jesus. I mean, after the resurrection of Lazarus and the rumors that are flying around and the eyewitness accounts that are happening, they decide that Jesus has to die basically, he’s got…he’s got to disappear. And they’ve even decided to see if they can do away with Lazarus and just kind of eliminate, right, sort of the wipe out the memory of these things that happened after the same fashion that new dynasties would wipe out the memory of the leaders who were before them. So, Jesus is kind of…kind of forced to be a little bit stealthy Himself, be very, very choosy about where He’s moving. And yet, he does come. He does come to Jerusalem for the Passover and He’s staying in Bethany, where Mary anoints Him as we see in the book of John. But this is a Passover like none other because Jesus isn’t leaving Jerusalem, not before a trial and an execution. And as I was mentioning yesterday, this…I mean where kind of at the front end of this story, but this is the last time we’ll move through this story and this year. So, let’s immerse ourselves in…in the story and in contemplating the story. And yes, the time that we would normally really, really focus our attention on this story would be holy week, right, leading up to Easter, which is what, a month and a half ago now? But really, when…when should we not contemplate the gift, the sacrifice, the humility, the story of Jesus last days? And, so yes, once again, I remind us, like as we’re going through this to understand that this isn’t going to be repetitive. This is the final journey through this story this year.

Prayer:

Father we thank You for Your word. We thank You for just…I mean there’s so much drama in today’s reading, it’s just riveting to understand this and to begin to watch how things are shaping up and how the sort of…the next move for the nation of Israel will begin to materialize even as we watch Your next move in the gospel of John, the move that will lead You down the pathway to the cross. We are thankful. We are thankful for Your word in our lives. We are thankful for Your sacrifice that has brought us eternal life and hope. The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Wednesday May 20, 2020 (NIV)

1 Samuel 26-28

David Again Spares Saul

26 Then the Ziphites came to Saul at Gibeah saying, “David is hiding on the hill of Hachilah opposite Jeshimon.”(A) 2 So Saul, accompanied by three thousand of the fit young men of Israel,(B) went immediately to the Wilderness of Ziph to search for David there. 3 Saul camped beside the road at the hill of Hachilah(C) opposite Jeshimon. David was living in the wilderness and discovered Saul had come there after him.(D) 4 So David sent out spies and knew for certain that Saul had come. 5 Immediately, David went to the place where Saul had camped. He saw the place where Saul and Abner son of Ner,(E) the commander of his army, were lying down. Saul was lying inside the inner circle of the camp with the troops camped around him. 6 Then David asked Ahimelech the Hethite(F) and Joab’s brother Abishai(G) son of Zeruiah, “Who will go with me into the camp(H) to Saul?”

“I’ll go with you,” answered Abishai.

7 That night, David and Abishai came to the troops, and Saul was lying there asleep in the inner circle of the camp with his spear stuck in the ground by his head. Abner and the troops were lying around him. 8 Then Abishai said to David, “Today God has delivered your enemy to you. Let me thrust the spear through him into the ground just once. I won’t have to strike him twice!”

9 But David said to Abishai, “Don’t destroy him, for who can lift a hand against the Lord’s anointed and be innocent?” (I) 10 David added, “As the Lord lives, the Lord will certainly strike him down:(J) either his day will come and he will die, or he will go into battle and perish. 11 However, as the Lord is my witness, I will never lift my hand against the Lord’s anointed.(K) Instead, take the spear and the water jug by his head, and let’s go.”

12 So David took the spear and the water jug by Saul’s head, and they went their way. No one saw them, no one knew, and no one woke up; they all remained asleep because a deep sleep from the Lord(L) came over them. 13 David crossed to the other side and stood on top of the mountain at a distance; there was a considerable space between them. 14 Then David shouted to the troops and to Abner son of Ner, “Aren’t you going to answer, Abner?”

“Who are you who calls to the king?” Abner asked.

15 David called to Abner, “You’re a man, aren’t you? Who in Israel is your equal? So why didn’t you protect your lord the king when one of the people came to destroy him? 16 What you have done is not good. As the Lord lives, all of you deserve to die[a] since you didn’t protect your lord, the Lord’s anointed.(M) Now look around; where are the king’s spear and water jug that were by his head?”

17 Saul recognized David’s voice and asked, “Is that your voice, my son David?” (N)

“It is my voice, my lord and king,” David said. 18 Then he continued, “Why is my lord pursuing his servant? What have I done? What crime have I committed?(O) 19 Now, may my lord the king please hear the words of his servant: If it is the Lord who has incited you against me,(P) then may he accept an offering.(Q) But if it is people,(R) may they be cursed in the presence of the Lord, for today they have banished me from sharing in the inheritance of the Lord, saying,(S) ‘Go and worship other gods.’ 20 So don’t let my blood fall to the ground far from the Lord’s presence, for the king of Israel has come out to search for a single flea,(T) like one who pursues a partridge in the mountains.”

21 Saul responded, “I have sinned.(U) Come back, my son David, I will never harm you again because today you considered my life precious. I have been a fool! I’ve committed a grave error.”

22 David answered, “Here is the king’s spear; have one of the young men come over and get it. 23 The Lord will repay every man for his righteousness(V) and his loyalty. I wasn’t willing to lift my hand against the Lord’s anointed, even though the Lord handed you over to me today.(W) 24 Just as I considered your life valuable today, so may the Lord consider my life valuable(X) and rescue me from all trouble.”(Y)

25 Saul said to him, “You are blessed, my son David. You will certainly do great things and will also prevail.”(Z) Then David went on his way, and Saul returned home.(AA)

David Flees to Ziklag

27 David said to himself, “One of these days I’ll be swept away by Saul. There is nothing better for me than to escape immediately to the land of the Philistines.(AB) Then Saul will give up searching for me everywhere in Israel, and I’ll escape from him.” 2 So David set out with his six hundred men(AC) and went over to Achish son of Maoch,(AD) the king of Gath. 3 David and his men stayed with Achish in Gath. Each man had his family with him,(AE) and David had his two wives: Ahinoam of Jezreel and Abigail of Carmel,(AF) Nabal’s widow. 4 When it was reported to Saul that David had fled to Gath, he no longer searched for him.

5 Now David said to Achish, “If I have found favor with you, let me be given a place in one of the outlying towns, so I can live there. Why should your servant live in the royal city with you?” 6 That day Achish gave Ziklag(AG) to him, and it still belongs to the kings of Judah today. 7 The length of time that David stayed in Philistine territory amounted to a year and four months.(AH)

8 David and his men went up and raided the Geshurites,(AI) the Girzites,[b] and the Amalekites.(AJ) From ancient times they had been the inhabitants of the region through Shur(AK) as far as the land of Egypt. 9 Whenever David attacked the land, he did not leave a single person alive, either man or woman, but he took flocks, herds, donkeys, camels, and clothing.(AL) Then he came back to Achish, 10 who inquired, “Where did you raid today?” [c](AM)

David replied, “The south country of Judah,” “The south country of the Jerahmeelites,”(AN) or “The south country of the Kenites.”(AO)

11 David did not let a man or woman live to be brought to Gath, for he said, “Or they will inform on us and say, ‘This is what David did.’” This was David’s custom during the whole time he stayed in the Philistine territory. 12 So Achish trusted David, thinking, “Since he has made himself repulsive to his people Israel, he will be my servant forever.”

Saul and the Medium

28 At that time, the Philistines(AP) gathered their military units into one army to fight against Israel. So Achish said to David, “You know, of course, that you and your men must march out in the army[d] with me.”

2 David replied to Achish, “Good, you will find out what your servant can do.”

So Achish said to David, “Very well, I will appoint you as my permanent bodyguard.”(AQ)

3 By this time Samuel had died,(AR) all Israel had mourned for him and buried him in Ramah, his city,(AS) and Saul had removed the mediums and spiritists from the land.(AT) 4 The Philistines gathered and camped at Shunem. So Saul gathered all Israel, and they camped at Gilboa. 5 When Saul saw the Philistine camp, he was afraid and his heart pounded. 6 He inquired of the Lord, but the Lord did not answer him in dreams or by the Urim or by the prophets.(AU) 7 Saul then said to his servants, “Find me a woman who is a medium, so I can go and consult her.”

His servants replied, “There is a woman at En-dor(AV) who is a medium.”(AW)

8 Saul disguised himself(AX) by putting on different clothes and set out with two of his men. They came to the woman at night, and Saul said, “Consult a spirit for me.(AY) Bring up for me the one I tell you.”(AZ)

9 But the woman said to him, “You surely know what Saul has done,(BA) how he has cut off the mediums and spiritists from the land. Why are you setting a trap for me to get me killed?”

10 Then Saul swore to her by the Lord: “As surely as the Lord lives, no punishment will come to you[e] from this.”

11 “Who is it that you want me to bring up for you?” the woman asked.

“Bring up Samuel for me,” he answered.

12 When the woman saw Samuel, she screamed, and then she asked Saul, “Why did you deceive me? You are Saul!”

13 But the king said to her, “Don’t be afraid. What do you see?”

“I see a spirit form[f] coming up out of the earth,” the woman answered.

14 Then Saul asked her, “What does he look like?”

“An old man is coming up,” she replied. “He’s wearing a robe.”(BB) Then Saul knew that it was Samuel, and he knelt low with his face to the ground and paid homage.(BC)

15 “Why have you disturbed me by bringing me up?” Samuel asked Saul.

“I’m in serious trouble,” replied Saul. “The Philistines are fighting against me and God has turned away from me.(BD) He doesn’t answer me anymore,(BE) either through the prophets or in dreams. So I’ve called on you to tell me what I should do.”

16 Samuel answered, “Since the Lord has turned away from you and has become your enemy, why are you asking me? 17 The Lord has done[g] exactly what he said through me: The Lord has torn the kingship out of your hand and given it to your neighbor David.(BF) 18 You did not obey the Lord and did not carry out his burning anger against Amalek;(BG) therefore the Lord has done this to you today. 19 The Lord will also hand Israel over to the Philistines along with you. Tomorrow you and your sons will be with me,[h](BH) and the Lord will hand Israel’s army over to the Philistines.”

20 Immediately, Saul fell flat on the ground. He was terrified by Samuel’s words and was also weak because he had not eaten anything all day and all night. 21 The woman came over to Saul, and she saw that he was terrified and said to him, “Look, your servant has obeyed you. I took my life in my hands(BI) and did what you told me to do. 22 Now please listen to your servant. Let me set some food in front of you. Eat and it will give you strength so you can go on your way.”

23 He refused, saying, “I won’t eat,” but when his servants and the woman urged him, he listened to them.(BJ) He got up off the ground and sat on the bed.(BK)

24 The woman had a fattened calf at her house, and she quickly slaughtered it.(BL) She also took flour, kneaded it, and baked unleavened bread. 25 She served it to Saul and his servants, and they ate. Afterward, they got up and left that night.

John 11:1-54

Lazarus Dies at Bethany

11 Now a man was sick, Lazarus from Bethany,(A) the village of Mary and her sister Martha.(B) 2 Mary was the one who anointed the Lord with perfume and wiped his feet with her hair,(C) and it was her brother Lazarus who was sick. 3 So the sisters sent a message to him: “Lord, the one you love is sick.”

4 When Jesus heard it, he said, “This sickness will not end in death but is for the glory of God,(D) so that the Son of God(E) may be glorified through it.” 5 Now Jesus loved Martha, her sister, and Lazarus. 6 So when he heard that he was sick, he stayed two more days in the place where he was. 7 Then after that, he said to the disciples, “Let’s go to Judea(F) again.”

8 “Rabbi,”(G) the disciples told him, “just now the Jews tried to stone you,(H) and you’re going there again?”

9 “Aren’t there twelve hours in a day?” Jesus answered. “If anyone walks during the day, he doesn’t stumble, because he sees the light of this world.(I) 10 But if anyone walks during the night,(J) he does stumble, because the light is not in him.”

11 He said this, and then he told them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep,(K) but I’m on my way to wake him up.”

12 Then the disciples said to him, “Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will get well.”

13 Jesus, however, was speaking about his death, but they thought he was speaking about natural sleep. 14 So Jesus then told them plainly, “Lazarus has died. 15 I’m glad for you that I wasn’t there so that you may believe. But let’s go to him.”

16 Then Thomas(L) (called “Twin”[a]) said to his fellow disciples, “Let’s go too so that we may die with him.”

The Resurrection and the Life

17 When Jesus arrived, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb(M) four days. 18 Bethany was near Jerusalem(N) (less than two miles[b] away). 19 Many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them about their brother.

20 As soon as Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went to meet him, but Mary remained seated in the house. 21 Then Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother wouldn’t have died. 22 Yet even now I know that whatever you ask from God, God will give you.”

23 “Your brother will rise(O) again,” Jesus told her.

24 Martha said to him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.”(P)

25 Jesus said to her, “I am(Q) the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me,(R) even if he dies, will live.(S) 26 Everyone who lives and believes in me will never die.(T) Do you believe this?”

27 “Yes, Lord,” she told him, “I believe you are the Messiah,(U) the Son(V) of God, who comes into the world.”(W)

Jesus Shares the Sorrow of Death

28 Having said this, she went back and called her sister Mary, saying in private, “The Teacher is here and is calling for you.”

29 As soon as Mary heard this, she got up quickly and went to him.(X) 30 Jesus had not yet come into the village but was still in the place where Martha had met him. 31 The Jews who were with her in the house consoling her saw that Mary got up quickly and went out. They followed her, supposing that she was going to the tomb(Y) to cry there.

32 As soon as Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet(Z) and told him, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother wouldn’t have died!”

33 When Jesus saw her crying, and the Jews who had come with her crying, he was deeply moved[c] in his spirit(AA) and troubled. 34 “Where have you put him?” he asked.

“Lord,” they told him, “come and see.”

35 Jesus wept.(AB)

36 So the Jews said, “See how he loved(AC) him!” 37 But some of them said, “Couldn’t he who opened the blind man’s eyes(AD) also have kept this man from dying?”

The Seventh Sign: Raising Lazarus from the Dead

38 Then Jesus, deeply moved again, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone was lying against it.(AE) 39 “Remove the stone,” Jesus said.

Martha, the dead man’s sister, told him, “Lord, there is already a stench because he has been dead four days.”

40 Jesus said to her, “Didn’t I tell you that if you believed you would see the glory(AF) of God?”(AG)

41 So they removed the stone. Then Jesus raised his eyes and said, “Father, I thank(AH) you that you heard me.(AI) 42 I know that you always hear me, but because of the crowd standing here I said this, so that they may believe you sent(AJ) me.” 43 After he said this, he shouted with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” 44 The dead man came out bound hand and foot with linen strips and with his face wrapped in a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Unwrap him and let him go.”

The Plot to Kill Jesus

45 Therefore, many of the Jews who came to Mary and saw what he did believed in him.(AK) 46 But some of them went to the Pharisees(AL) and told them what Jesus had done.

47 So the chief priests and the Pharisees convened the Sanhedrin(AM) and were saying, “What are we going to do since this man is doing many signs? 48 If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans(AN) will come and take away both our place and our nation.”

49 One of them, Caiaphas,(AO) who was high priest(AP) that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all! 50 You’re not considering that it is to your[d] advantage that one man should die for the people rather than the whole nation perish.”(AQ) 51 He did not say this on his own, but being high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus was going to die(AR) for the nation, 52 and not for the nation only, but also to unite the scattered children(AS) of God. 53 So from that day on they plotted to kill him.(AT)

54 Jesus therefore no longer walked openly(AU) among the Jews but departed from there to the countryside near the wilderness,(AV) to a town called Ephraim, and he stayed there with the disciples.

1 Samuel 26:1-28:25, John 11:1-54, Psalms 117:1-2, Proverbs 15:22-23

Today is the 20th day of May welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I am Brian it is a joy and a pleasure to be here with you today as we move forward one more step taking us one step further away from the beginning of the year one step closer to the end of the year because the journey we are on lasts a year and is life-changing because the Bible in a year touches everything about us. And that should be apparent by now. May 20th. We’ve already been through an awful lot this year and the Scriptures in our lives makes such a difference in pointing the direction that we should go. And, so, let’s take that next step. We’re reading from the Christian Standard Bible this…this week and we’re working our way through the book of first Samuel and now we are firmly ensconced in the story between David and King Saul. Today, First Samuel 26, 27, and 28.

Commentary:

Okay. So, we…I mean…pretty dramatic reading today, both old and new Testaments. So, in first Samuel again, Saul is after David. He’s pursuing him to destroy him again. David, has an opportunity to kill the King but spares the king and then exposes the king and exposes the deficiencies of the people who are keeping the king alive by calling out and just showing like, “I could have killed you again. You could be dead right now but your hearing my voice because I spared you. So, once again Saul is exposed here. Part of the plot against David that Saul is whipping up is that David wants to destroy the king…the king…that David wants the king dead. But David was never plotting against the king and this keeps showing itself. And the thing is, the people are seeing, right? So, like Saul’s got 3000 elite warriors who are loyal to the king in the kingdom but they’re seeing all of this, people are talking about this. In the end though, like after this episode David is like, “you know what…I mean…I have to be on my game 100% of the time. If I mess up one time, we could all be dead. He’s not gonna stop.” And, so, David defects to the Philistines, actually becoming like a Philistine with his allegiance…his allegiance to king Achish of Gath. And, so, the king gives David a city to take his people to and that’s where they settle. And, so, for over a year then, King Saul’s not going to pursue David into Philistine territory like crossing an international border. So, David finds some…some safety. Meanwhile the Philistines are gonna go to battle, and a big battle with the Israelites and David is expected to go into the battle as a Philistine, which he agrees to do. Meanwhile, Saul is a little bit freaking out because God won’t answer him. And, so, he tries to re-create the structure that he had at one point with the final judge of Israel, the prophet of Israel, even the leader of Israel, Samuel, who has died. Saul goes to spiritist and calls of Samuel from the dead. And this seems to be actually Samuel coming up from the dead, not like some kind of demon or something impersonating Samuel. The Bible is saying this is Samuel, who has essentially one final prophecy for Saul and that prophecy is that…that Saul and his sons will be with Samuel in the realm of the dead in one day. So, we’ll have to wait until tomorrow’s reading to find out if that is true. What a strange showdown we have. We have Saul who has pursued David all this time to kill him, who was not successful, but David, in order to preserve his life has had to defect to the Philistines who are now expecting that he will be in battle against Saul. And meanwhile Saul’s essentially told that he’s got less than a day to live. So, yeah, some drama building for us in first Samuel.

Now, in the book of John there’s also drama building. It’s the story of Lazarus being raised up from the dead and its a very, very famous story. And, so we won’t go into all of the story right now. Let’s just kind of skip to the end. Lazarus is raised from the dead after having been in the tomb for four days. That would cause a ripple effect, right, of information spreading throughout all the social networks of the day. Obviously, there weren’t social networks online. Like we understand that everybody has some type of social network - the people that you know. This would spread all around very quickly. And Bethany just being 2 miles from Jerusalem, word would’ve gotten to Jerusalem very quickly. And it did. And it caused a meeting of the Sanhedrin. It brought together the people who were most studied in the law and most studied in the how…how to govern the people because of the law, the Mosaic law. They got together and decided that if this guy Jesus thinks he can run around raising people from the dead, then they’re going to kill him. So, we are kinda getting set up here for a couple of showdowns in the old and the New Testament. Of course, in the New Testament we know the story of the gospel, but let’s understand that the territory we are moving into in the book of John, this is the last time we will be moving through this territory. And, so, let’s remember that as…as we give it the honor that it’s due.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word. We thank You for another day that You have allowed Your word to come into our lives and…and…and just work in our minds, work in our hearts, challenging our motivations, and allowing us to see that we can… we can read these texts and they can be thousands of years old but underneath of them all the motives of the human heart is the same. So, we thank You that You guide and direct us as we look into the lives of those who have gone before. Come Holy Spirit. Continue this work of transformation in us, this work of sanctification in us as we continue to open ourselves fully to Your will and Your ways and Your direction, to Your comfort, to Your discipline in our lives. We open ourselves fully to You because we trust You. Come Jesus we pray. In Your name we ask. Amen.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Tuesday May 19, 2020 (NIV)

1 Samuel 24-25

David Spares Saul

24 When Saul returned from pursuing the Philistines,(A) he was told, “David is in the wilderness near En-gedi.”(B) 2 So Saul took three thousand of Israel’s fit young men(C) and went to look for David and his men in front of the Rocks of the Wild Goats. 3 When Saul came to the sheep pens along the road, a cave was there, and he went in to relieve himself.[a](D) David and his men were staying in the recesses of the cave,(E) 4 so they said to him, “Look, this is the day the Lord told you about: ‘I will hand your enemy over to you so you can do to him whatever you desire.’” Then David got up and secretly cut off the corner of Saul’s robe.

5 Afterward, David’s conscience bothered[b](F) him because he had cut off the corner of Saul’s robe.[c] 6 He said to his men, “As the Lord is my witness, I would never do such a thing to my lord, the Lord’s anointed.(G) I will never lift my hand against him, since he is the Lord’s anointed.”(H) 7 With these words David persuaded[d] his men, and he did not let them rise up against Saul.

Then Saul left the cave and went on his way. 8 After that, David got up, went out of the cave, and called to Saul, “My lord the king!” When Saul looked behind him, David knelt low with his face to the ground and paid homage.(I) 9 David said to Saul, “Why do you listen to the words of people who say, ‘Look, David intends to harm you’? 10 You can see with your own eyes that the Lord handed you over to me today in the cave.(J) Someone advised me to kill you,(K) but I[e][f] took pity on you and said: I won’t lift my hand against my lord, since he is the Lord’s anointed. 11 Look, my father!(L) Look at the corner of your robe in my hand, for I cut it off, but I didn’t kill you. Recognize[g] that I’ve committed no crime or rebellion. I haven’t sinned against you even though you are hunting me down to take my life.(M)

12 “May the Lord judge between me and you, and may the Lord take vengeance on you for me, but my hand will never be against you.(N) 13 As the old proverb says, ‘Wickedness comes from wicked people.’(O) My hand will never be against you. 14 Who has the king of Israel come after? What are you chasing after? A dead dog? A single flea?(P) 15 May the Lord be judge and decide between you and me. May he take notice and plead my case and deliver[h] me from you.”(Q)

16 When David finished saying these things to him, Saul replied, “Is that your voice, David my son?” (R) Then Saul wept aloud 17 and said to David, “You are more righteous than I, for you have done what is good to me though I have done what is evil to you.(S) 18 You yourself have told me today what good you did for me: when the Lord handed me over to you, you didn’t kill me.(T) 19 When a man finds his enemy, does he let him go unharmed?[i](U) May the Lord repay you with good for what you’ve done for me today.

20 “Now I know for certain you will be king, and the kingdom of Israel will be established[j] in your hand.(V) 21 Therefore swear to me by the Lord that you will not cut off my descendants or wipe out my name from my father’s family.”(W) 22 So David swore to Saul. Then Saul went back home, and David and his men went up to the stronghold.(X)

David, Nabal, and Abigail

25 Samuel died,(Y) and all Israel assembled to mourn for him,(Z) and they buried him by his home in Ramah.(AA) David then went down to the Wilderness of Paran.[k](AB)

2 A man in Maon(AC) had a business in Carmel;(AD) he was a very rich man with three thousand sheep and one thousand goats and was shearing his sheep in Carmel. 3 The man’s name was Nabal, and his wife’s name, Abigail. The woman was intelligent and beautiful, but the man, a Calebite,(AE) was harsh and evil in his dealings.

4 While David was in the wilderness, he heard that Nabal was shearing sheep, 5 so David sent ten young men instructing them, “Go up to Carmel, and when you come to Nabal, greet him[l] in my name. 6 Then say this: ‘Long life to you,[m] and peace to you, peace to your family, and peace to all that is yours.(AF) 7 I hear that you are shearing.[n] When your shepherds were with us, we did not harass them, and nothing of theirs was missing the whole time they were in Carmel.(AG) 8 Ask your young men, and they will tell you. So let my young men find favor with you, for we have come on a feast[o] day.(AH) Please give whatever you have on hand to your servants and to your son David.’”

9 David’s young men went and said all these things to Nabal on David’s behalf,[p] and they waited.[q] 10 Nabal asked them, “Who is David?(AI) Who is Jesse’s son? Many slaves these days are running away from their masters. 11 Am I supposed to take my bread, my water, and my meat that I butchered for my shearers and give them to these men? I don’t know where they are from.”

12 David’s young men retraced their steps. When they returned to him, they reported all these words. 13 He said to his men, “All of you, put on your swords!” So each man put on his sword, and David also put on his sword. About four hundred men followed David while two hundred stayed with the supplies.(AJ)

14 One of Nabal’s young men informed Abigail, Nabal’s wife, “Look, David sent messengers from the wilderness to greet our master,(AK) but he screamed at them. 15 The men treated us very well. When we were in the field, we weren’t harassed(AL) and nothing of ours was missing the whole time we were living among them. 16 They were a wall around us, both day and night,(AM) the entire time we were with them herding the sheep. 17 Now consider carefully[r] what you should do, because there is certain to be trouble for our master and his entire family. He is such a worthless fool nobody can talk to him!”

18 Abigail hurried, taking two hundred loaves of bread, two clay jars of wine, five butchered sheep, a bushel[s] of roasted grain, one hundred clusters of raisins, and two hundred cakes of pressed figs, and loaded them on donkeys.(AN) 19 Then she said to her male servants, “Go ahead of me. I will be right behind you.”(AO) But she did not tell her husband, Nabal.

20 As she rode the donkey down a mountain pass hidden from view, she saw David and his men coming toward her and met them. 21 David had just said, “I guarded everything that belonged to this man in the wilderness for nothing. He was not missing anything, yet he paid me back evil for good. 22 May God punish me[t] and do so severely(AP) if I let any of his males[u] survive until morning.”(AQ)

23 When Abigail saw David, she quickly got off the donkey and knelt down with her face to the ground and paid homage to David.(AR) 24 She knelt at his feet and said, “The guilt is mine, my lord, but please let your servant speak to you directly. Listen to the words of your servant. 25 My lord should pay no attention to this worthless fool Nabal, for he lives up to his name:[v] His name means ‘stupid,’ and stupidity is all he knows.[w] I, your servant, didn’t see my lord’s young men whom you sent. 26 Now my lord, as surely as the Lord lives and as you yourself live—it is the Lord who kept you from participating in bloodshed and avenging yourself(AS) by your own hand—may your enemies and those who intend to harm my lord be like Nabal.(AT) 27 Let this gift(AU) your servant has brought to my lord be given to the young men who follow my lord. 28 Please forgive your servant’s offense,(AV) for the Lord is certain to make a lasting dynasty for my lord(AW) because he fights the Lord’s battles.(AX) Throughout your life, may evil[x] not be found in you.(AY)

29 “Someone is pursuing you and intends to take your life. My lord’s life is tucked safely in the place[y] where the Lord your God protects the living, but he is flinging away your enemies’ lives like stones from a sling.(AZ) 30 When the Lord does for my lord all the good he promised you and appoints you ruler over Israel,(BA) 31 there will not be remorse or a troubled conscience for my lord because of needless bloodshed or my lord’s revenge. And when the Lord does good things for my lord, may you remember me your servant.”(BB)

32 Then David said to Abigail, “Blessed be the Lord God of Israel,(BC) who sent you to meet me today! 33 May your discernment be blessed, and may you be blessed. Today you kept me from participating in bloodshed and avenging myself by my own hand.(BD) 34 Otherwise, as surely as the Lord God of Israel lives, who prevented me from harming you, if you had not come quickly to meet me, Nabal wouldn’t have had any males[z] left by morning light.” 35 Then David accepted what she had brought him and said, “Go home in peace.(BE) See, I have heard what you said and have granted your request.”(BF)

36 Then Abigail went to Nabal, and there he was in his house, holding a feast fit for a king.(BG) Nabal’s heart was cheerful,[aa] and he was very drunk, so she didn’t say anything[ab] to him(BH) until morning light.

37 In the morning when Nabal sobered up,[ac] his wife told him about these events. His heart died[ad] and he became a stone. 38 About ten days later, the Lord struck Nabal dead.(BI)

39 When David heard that Nabal was dead, he said, “Blessed be the Lord who championed my cause against Nabal’s insults(BJ) and restrained his servant from doing evil.(BK) The Lord brought Nabal’s evil deeds back on his own head.”(BL)

Then David sent messengers to speak to Abigail about marrying him. 40 When David’s servants came to Abigail at Carmel, they said to her, “David sent us to bring you to him as a wife.”

41 She stood up, paid homage with her face to the ground,(BM) and said, “Here I am, your servant, a slave to wash the feet of my lord’s servants.”(BN) 42 Then Abigail got up quickly, and with her five female servants accompanying her, rode on the donkey following David’s messengers.(BO) And so she became his wife.

43 David also married Ahinoam of Jezreel,(BP) and the two of them became his wives. 44 But Saul gave his daughter Michal, David’s wife, to Palti(BQ) son of Laish, who was from Gallim.(BR)

John 10:22-42

Jesus at the Festival of Dedication

22 Then the Festival of Dedication took place in Jerusalem, and it was winter. 23 Jesus was walking in the temple in Solomon’s Colonnade.(A) 24 The Jews surrounded him and asked, “How long are you going to keep us in suspense?[a] If you are the Messiah,(B) tell us plainly.”[b](C)

25 “I did tell you and you don’t believe,” Jesus answered them. “The works(D) that I do in my Father’s name testify about me. 26 But you don’t believe because you are not of my sheep.[c](E) 27 My sheep hear my voice, I know them, and they follow me. 28 I give them eternal life,(F) and they will never perish.(G) No one will snatch(H) them out of my hand. 29 My Father,(I) who has given them to me, is greater than all. No one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand. 30 I and the Father are one.”(J)

Renewed Efforts to Stone Jesus

31 Again the Jews picked up rocks to stone him.(K)

32 Jesus replied, “I have shown you many good works(L) from the Father. For which of these works are you stoning me?”

33 “We aren’t stoning(M) you for a good work,” the Jews answered, “but for blasphemy, because you—being a man—make yourself God.”

34 Jesus answered them, “Isn’t it written in your law,[d] I said, you are gods?[e](N) 35 If he called those to whom the word(O) of God came ‘gods’—and the Scripture(P) cannot be broken— 36 do you say, ‘You are blaspheming’ to the one the Father set apart and sent into the world, because I said: I am the Son of God?(Q) 37 If I am not doing my Father’s works,(R) don’t believe me. 38 But if I am doing them and you don’t believe me, believe the works. This way you will know and understand[f] that the Father is in me and I in the Father.”(S) 39 Then they were trying again to seize him,(T) but he escaped their grasp.(U)

Many beyond the Jordan Believe in Jesus

40 So he departed again across the Jordan(V) to the place where John(W) had been baptizing earlier, and he remained there. 41 Many came to him(X) and said, “John never did a sign, but everything John said about this man was true.” 42 And many believed in him there.

Thanks to God for Deliverance

1 I love the Lord because he has heard
my appeal for mercy.(A)
2 Because he has turned his ear to me,
I will call out to him as long as I live.(B)

3 The ropes of death were wrapped around me,
and the torments of Sheol overcame me;
I encountered trouble and sorrow.(C)
4 Then I called on the name of the Lord:
“Lord, save me!” (D)

5 The Lord is gracious and righteous;
our God is compassionate.(E)
6 The Lord guards the inexperienced;
I was helpless, and he saved me.(F)
7 Return to your rest, my soul,

1 Samuel 24:1-25:44, John 10:22-42, Psalms 116:1-19, Proverbs 15:20-21

Today is the 19th day of May welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I’m Brian it is wonderful to be here with you today as we move forward. It’s the only way we move, forward each and every day as we take the journey of a lifetime through the Scriptures. So, first Samuel is where we’ve been kind of campin’ out here for the last week getting to know Saul, getting to know David, getting to know all the circumstances that swirled around the establishment of the kingdom of Kings in Israel. And, so, we’ve reached a point where Saul is certainly paranoid about David. David keeps increasing. Saul keeps kind of fading. And Saul wants David dead. And, so here’s where we pick up the story. First Samuel chapters 24 and 25 today.

Commentary:

Okay. So, in the book of first Samuel we see David increasing, right, in momentum and Saul just kind of decreasing. He’s the king, he’s got a lot of power, this is gonna take some time, but we can see him kind of diminishing. He is trying to find David. He wants to kill David. Like this is his obsession at this point. He wants to get rid David before David can get rid of him and his household obliterating the memory of his name. Like, you know, we hear this kind of stuff talked about as Kings destroy other kings and kingdoms. So, he wants to get rid of David because he can sort of see what’s gonna happen, he can see where this is headed. This isn’t just to protect the kingdom. Like, this super personal. He has been trying, one way or another, to get David killed for a long time and David has just had to kind of learn as he goes. He’s had to learn how to be cunning and swift. I mean, he was a shepherd and then he killed the giant, Goliath. Now he wasn’t incapable, obviously. He had killed a lion and a bear as a shepherd. Like, he was capable but this…like…it was never on his radar that someday he would be on the run from the king of Israel because the king of Israel was so paranoid about him. So, David’s had to grow pretty fast. So, Saul, the king of Israel’s, out looking for David with 3000 troops to find and surround and engulf and overwhelm and destroy David’s camp if they can get to them. And Saul has to use the bathroom. This is kind of a funny story because, you know, he's…he’s out with the soldiers so, yeah, if you were like watering the flowers or whatever, probably no big deal, but if you need some privacy, probably something a little more than that. And David’s hiding in the cave and just the whole thing of it. Saul using the bathroom while David’s cutting off the edge of his robe. It’s like a pretty dramatic, pretty gross, pretty…pretty…pretty uncomfortable situation. And then the king gets back out of the cave and that’s when David reveals himself and is like, “I wouldn't…I could have killed you. Like, I could have done to you what you are trying to do to me. Right now, you could be dead. I could have killed you. So, I’m trying to show you that I don't…I’m not trying to do anything against anybody.” And Saul is humiliated and humbled in the moment for sure. He does, you know, like his eyes are opened for a minute…like he can see, “yeah, David could have…I could be dead. David could’ve killed me. So, he must not want to kill me because he had to me.” So, this buys a little time with David and Saul. Meanwhile, David’s been, you know, kind of out in the fields. They’ve had to stay the run, but we encountered this guy named Nabel, and David has protected his shepherds and they just need a little supplies at harvest time, and they are kind of expecting that since they protect…protected the shepherds and the flocks that they would receive some gratitude. Nabel doesn’t give gratitude, but Nabel’s wife, Abigail certainly does and you can tell in the conversation that they have, that David is…is impressed with Abigail, is taken with her shrewdness and wisdom and insight in being proactive. So, once whole incident is over and Nabel finds out what Abigail has done he…I mean he dies 10 days later. And, so, Abigail becomes the wife of David, along with Ahinoam and a sort of kingly dynasty is in the making.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word. And like Saul we have to confess that we can allow things to begin building up inside of us. We can start telling ourselves a story about somebody else. We can start filling in all of the blanks with assumptions. We can pave over those assumptions with additional fabrications so that we are believing something completely false about someone else, even to the point that we want to harm them or we want something bad to happen to them and then for a moment the lights go on and we can see things clearly. We can see how much we’ve made up and how much gossip we’ve listened to and how much it took to make up this story only to see that it’s not true, that isn’t the other person’s heart toward us at all. We’re seeing this on a grand scale in the story between Saul and David, but on smaller scales we play this story out all of the time. And, so, may we receive the humble posture that King Saul had to take on today once he realized that David really indeed could have done away with him once and for all. Help us Holy Spirit to remain humble toward one another, not making up things about each other, not just assuming things, but actually entering into the intimacy of a relationship so that we know things. Come Holy Spirit we pray. In the name of Jesus. We ask. Amen.

This is for the dad who called in on the 15th of May for his son named Joshua. You’d lost your other son in September the year before. My name is God’s Life Speaker. Lord we just left this family up to You. We just ask a hedge of protection from their mind their hearts their bodies Lord Jesus. We just declare life in this family in Your name. We speak it over them and we speak it over Joshua, that he would use his brothers story to tell Your story Lord, that somewhere inside Joshua he would know he is more useful here serving Christ for others to see, and to just bring to life his brother through his brothers story. Lord, somehow help the dad and mom to communicate that, that he could be used mightily by God, by You Lord, that You would just use Joshua and that he, through his sadness in his heart, his broken spirit would come to You Lord, that he would just decide knowing who You are, and for others to know who You are is more important Lord, that he would just bring his brother back to life in a story that leads countless, countless to Your son. Hello my name is Ruth I’m calling because I’ve been a member…I’ve been listening to the DAB family for about four years now and this is my very first time calling in. And I’m calling in, I live in New York, and I’m calling in because I need prayer for my business. I’m losing…I…I don’t know what I’m gonna do because of this corona. Business has been closed and I’m just asking God direction to lead me and direct me where to go from here. Thank God for Brian and this…this forum that we can come in. I’ve listened to many prayers and listened to many requests and I’m just am asking for prayer for me that God will help my business or guide me and show me where I should go from here. I pray that all is well with everyone and that this too shall pass. Thank you for your prayers. God bless.

This is Danny. My mom who’s battling cancer went to pick up some fried chicken the other day and there was quite a few people in there so she sat down waiting her turn and by the time her turn was up she was so weak she couldn’t get up out of her chair. So, she asked the man next to her to help her and he walked away from her. And everybody saw it and she asked if anybody could help her out to the counter and nobody came forward. Finally, the employee behind the counter came over and he helped her up and she looked at the crowd and she said, “I don’t have the virus I have cancer and you can’t catch that from me.” And he took her to the counter, and he took her order and then he walked her to the car and he said, “I’ll bring your order out you”, which he did. And my mother was so grateful. The next day she brought him a card with some money in it and she learned that his name was Abraham, which she immediately had a bond with him because she’s Jewish. And, so, I just would like you all to just join me in prayer to just pour out blessings on this young man named Abraham. Heavenly Father, thank You so much for this Young man, that he stood up and he did the right thing like a good Samaritan. I pray Lord that You would just heap blessings upon him and I just pray that You would just…just know in his heart that he did the right thing. He didn’t care about being fired by violating the social distancing rules, he just did the right thing for my mother. So, thank You for that Lord and I pray that You would give all of the people present another opportunity Lord to do the right thing and they would remember how they failed and they would do the right thing going forward Lord. Thank You, Jesus. In Your heavenly name I pray. Amen.

Hi everyone, DAB family __ I am calling for your prayers please. We all know what we’re dealing with right now, but this is the first time it’s really hitting me. One of my absolute best friends, my sister Lila just tells me that she’s tested positive, she’s a nurse, she’s a __ nurse at one of our COVID designated hospitals and it’s like she just…oh my goodness. And I just had my first COVID patient today and I’m about to go to open an all new…an all new COVID unit on Monday. So, please just keep us in your prayers. Please pray for healing powers over Lila’s body and protection over mine as we go into this situation. People are dying every day. She just buried her cousin two days ago and it’s just crazy. So, please everyone, please be safe, please do everything in your power to…to boost your immune system and keep contact down. Even though I know some states are opening back up and people have to go to work, but just please reduce your contact with the world and just keep yourself and your family physically safe and spiritually prayed up. Good morning DAB this is Ken calling from California and I’d like to ask for prayer for my 15-year-old son, Reed, who’s going through a difficult season in life. He’s very withdrawn right now. In fact, in February he refused to…to go to school. He spends virtually all day in his room with his lights off, refuses to associate with others and basically pushes everyone…pushed everyone out of his life. He doesn’t talk or want to receive encouragement or help of any kind from us as parents, his friends or receive professional help. He’s angry. He is very harsh towards others, scowls a lot, seems bitter, but doesn’t…doesn’t want to talk about. He appears very confused and no doubt he’s under attack by the enemy and he seems to have given up on his relationship with God. Reed really needs a breakthrough now. So, thank you DAB family for lifting him up…lifting Reed up in prayer.

Hi this is Jeanette from Denmark I have a word of encouragement for the grandmother who has just gotten custody of a 13-year-old grandson. When I heard your story, I was so grateful. I also had a grandmother who mothered from me for several years when I was a teenager and during those years there was a lot of material that I had to get off my heart and mind from the things I’d experienced before. It took time to establish a trust relationship with her, but it was the most blessed thing that happened. Suddenly, I was in a stable home and I really appreciate, right now, all of the things that she provided for me - food, clothing, a place to sleep, help with my homework, and yeah, a healthy example of what it can be to to get to know people. Thank you so much for the work that you’ve started. And also, Father thank You for covering my older sister in You with the grace to carry out the task that she has agreed to do. And Father I ask that You comfort her with Your Holy Spirit day and night, that Your words in her heart would become instruction and a path of her, that You would help her minute by minute and day by day.

1 Samuel 22-23

Saul’s Increasing Paranoia

22 So David left Gath and took refuge in the cave of Adullam.(A) When David’s brothers and his father’s whole family heard, they went down and joined him there. 2 In addition, every man who was desperate, in debt, or discontented rallied around him, and he became their leader. About four hundred men were with him.(B)

3 From there David went to Mizpeh of Moab where he said to the king of Moab, “Please let my father and mother stay with you until I know what God will do for me.” 4 So he left them in the care of the king of Moab, and they stayed with him the whole time David was in the stronghold.

5 Then the prophet Gad(C) said to David, “Don’t stay in the stronghold. Leave and return to the land of Judah.” So David left and went to the forest of Hereth.

6 Saul heard that David and his men had been discovered. At that time Saul was in Gibeah, sitting under the tamarisk tree(D) at the high place. His spear was in his hand, and all his servants were standing around him. 7 Saul said to his servants, “Listen, men of Benjamin: Is Jesse’s son going to give all of you fields and vineyards? Do you think he’ll make all of you commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds?(E) 8 That’s why all of you have conspired against me! Nobody tells me when my own son makes a covenant with Jesse’s son.(F) None of you cares about me(G) or tells me that my son has stirred up my own servant to wait in ambush for me, as is the case today.”

9 Then Doeg the Edomite,(H) who was in charge of Saul’s servants, answered, “I saw Jesse’s son come to Ahimelech son of Ahitub at Nob.(I) 10 Ahimelech inquired of the Lord for him(J) and gave him provisions.(K) He also gave him the sword of Goliath the Philistine.”(L)

Slaughter of the Priests

11 The king sent messengers to summon the priest Ahimelech son of Ahitub, and his father’s whole family, who were priests in Nob. All of them came to the king. 12 Then Saul said, “Listen, son of Ahitub!”

“I’m at your service,(M) my lord,” he said.

13 Saul asked him, “Why did you and Jesse’s son conspire against me? You gave him bread and a sword and inquired of God for him, so he could rise up against me and wait in ambush, as is the case today.”(N)

14 Ahimelech replied to the king, “Who among all your servants is as faithful as David?(O) He is the king’s son-in-law, captain of your bodyguard, and honored in your house. 15 Was today the first time I inquired of God for him?(P) Of course not! Please don’t let the king make an accusation against your servant or any of my father’s family, for your servant didn’t have any idea[a] about all this.”

16 But the king said, “You will die, Ahimelech—you and your father’s whole family!”

17 Then the king ordered the guards standing by him, “Turn and kill the priests of the Lord(Q) because they sided with David. For they knew he was fleeing, but they didn’t tell me.” But the king’s servants would not lift a hand to execute the priests of the Lord.

18 So the king said to Doeg, “Go and execute the priests!” So Doeg the Edomite went and executed the priests himself. On that day, he killed eighty-five men(R) who wore linen ephods.(S) 19 He also struck down Nob, the city of the priests, with the sword—both men and women, infants and nursing babies, oxen, donkeys, and sheep.(T)

20 However, one of the sons of Ahimelech son of Ahitub escaped. His name was Abiathar,(U) and he fled to David.(V) 21 Abiathar told David that Saul had killed the priests of the Lord. 22 Then David said to Abiathar, “I knew that Doeg the Edomite(W) was there that day and that he was sure to report to Saul. I myself am responsible for[b] the lives of everyone in your father’s family. 23 Stay with me. Don’t be afraid, for the one who wants to take my life wants to take your life.(X) You will be safe with me.”

Deliverance at Keilah

23 It was reported to David, “Look, the Philistines are fighting against Keilah(Y) and raiding the threshing floors.”

2 So David inquired of the Lord:(Z) “Should I launch an attack against these Philistines?”

The Lord answered David, “Launch an attack against the Philistines and rescue Keilah.”

3 But David’s men said to him, “Look, we’re afraid here in Judah; how much more if we go to Keilah against the Philistine forces!”

4 Once again, David inquired of the Lord, and the Lord answered him, “Go at once to Keilah, for I will hand the Philistines over to you.”(AA) 5 Then David and his men went to Keilah, fought against the Philistines, drove their livestock away, and inflicted heavy losses on them. So David rescued the inhabitants of Keilah. 6 Abiathar son of Ahimelech fled to David at Keilah, and he brought an ephod with him.

7 When it was reported to Saul that David had gone to Keilah, he said, “God has handed him over to me, for he has trapped himself by entering a town with barred gates.” 8 Then Saul summoned all the troops to go to war at Keilah and besiege David and his men.

9 When David learned that Saul was plotting evil against him, he said to the priest Abiathar,(AB) “Bring the ephod.”(AC)

10 Then David said, “Lord God of Israel, your servant has reliable information that Saul intends to come to Keilah and destroy the town because of me. 11 Will the citizens of Keilah hand me over to him? Will Saul come down as your servant has heard? Lord God of Israel, please tell your servant.”

The Lord answered, “He will come down.”

12 Then David asked, “Will the citizens of Keilah hand me and my men over to Saul?”

“They will,”(AD) the Lord responded.

13 So David and his men, numbering about six hundred,(AE) left Keilah at once and moved from place to place.(AF) When it was reported to Saul that David had escaped from Keilah, he called off the expedition. 14 David then stayed in the wilderness strongholds and in the hill country of the Wilderness of Ziph.(AG) Saul searched for him every day, but God did not hand David over to him.(AH)

A Renewed Covenant

15 David was in the Wilderness of Ziph in Horesh when he saw that Saul had come out to take his life. 16 Then Saul’s son Jonathan came to David in Horesh and encouraged him in his faith[c] in God,(AI) 17 saying, “Don’t be afraid, for my father Saul will never lay a hand on you. You yourself will be king over Israel,(AJ) and I’ll be your second-in-command. Even my father Saul knows it is true.”(AK) 18 Then the two of them made a covenant in the Lord’s presence.(AL) Afterward, David remained in Horesh, while Jonathan went home.

David’s Narrow Escape

19 Some Ziphites(AM) came up to Saul at Gibeah and said, “Isn’t it true that David is hiding among us in the strongholds in Horesh on the hill of Hachilah south of Jeshimon? 20 So now, whenever the king wants to come down, let him come down. As for us, we will be glad to hand him over to the king.”(AN)

21 “May you be blessed by the Lord,” replied Saul, “for you have shown concern for me.(AO) 22 Go and check again. Investigate[d] where he goes[e] and who has seen him there; they tell me he is extremely cunning. 23 Investigate[f] all the places where he hides. Then come back to me with accurate information, and I’ll go with you. If it turns out he really is in the region, I’ll search for him among all the clans[g] of Judah.” 24 So they went to Ziph ahead of Saul.

Now David and his men were in the wilderness near Maon(AP) in the Arabah south of Jeshimon, 25 and Saul and his men went to look for him. When David was told about it, he went down to the rock and stayed in the Wilderness of Maon. Saul heard of this and pursued David there.

26 Saul went along one side of the mountain and David and his men went along the other side. Even though David was hurrying to get away from Saul, Saul and his men were closing in on David and his men to capture them.(AQ) 27 Then a messenger came to Saul saying, “Come quickly, because the Philistines have raided the land!” 28 So Saul broke off his pursuit of David and went to engage the Philistines. Therefore, that place was named the Rock of Separation. 29 From there David went up and stayed in the strongholds of En-gedi.(AR)

John 10:1-21

The Good Shepherd

10 “Truly I tell you, anyone who doesn’t enter the sheep pen by the gate but climbs in some other way is a thief and a robber.(A) 2 The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd(B) of the sheep.(C) 3 The gatekeeper opens it for him, and the sheep hear his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4 When he has brought all his own outside, he goes ahead of them. The sheep follow him because they know his voice. 5 They will never follow a stranger; instead they will run away from him, because they don’t know the voice of strangers.” 6 Jesus gave them this figure of speech, but they did not understand(D) what he was telling them.

7 Jesus said again, “Truly I tell you, I am(E) the gate for the sheep.(F) 8 All who came before me[a] are thieves and robbers, but the sheep didn’t listen to them. 9 I am the gate. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will come in and go out and find pasture. 10 A thief comes only to steal(G) and kill and destroy.(H) I have come so that they may have life and have it in abundance.

11 “I am the good shepherd.(I) The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.(J) 12 The hired hand, since he is not the shepherd and doesn’t own the sheep, leaves them[b] and runs away when he sees a wolf(K) coming. The wolf then snatches and scatters them. 13 This happens because he is a hired hand and doesn’t care about the sheep.

14 “I am the good shepherd. I know my own, and my own know me, 15 just as the Father knows me, and I know the Father.(L) I lay down my life(M) for the sheep. 16 But I have other sheep(N) that are not from this sheep pen; I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. Then there will be one flock, one shepherd.(O) 17 This is why the Father loves me,(P) because I lay down my life(Q) so that I may take it up again. 18 No one takes it from me, but I lay it down on my own. I have the right to lay it down, and I have the right to take it up again. I have received this command from my Father.”(R)

19 Again the Jews were divided(S) because of these words. 20 Many of them were saying, “He has a demon(T) and he’s crazy. Why do you listen to him?” 21 Others were saying, “These aren’t the words of someone who is demon-possessed. Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?” (U)

Glory to God Alone

1 Not to us, Lord, not to us,
but to your name give glory
because of your faithful love, because of your truth.(A)
2 Why should the nations say,
“Where is their God?” (B)
3 Our God is in heaven
and does whatever he pleases.(C)

4 Their idols are silver and gold,
made by human hands.(D)
5 They have mouths but cannot speak,
eyes, but cannot see.
6 They have ears but cannot hear,
noses, but cannot smell.(E)
7 They have hands but cannot feel,
feet, but cannot walk.(F)
They cannot make a sound with their throats.(G)
8 Those who make them are[a] just like them,

1 Samuel 22-23

Saul’s Increasing Paranoia

22 So David left Gath and took refuge in the cave of Adullam.(A) When David’s brothers and his father’s whole family heard, they went down and joined him there. 2 In addition, every man who was desperate, in debt, or discontented rallied around him, and he became their leader. About four hundred men were with him.(B)

3 From there David went to Mizpeh of Moab where he said to the king of Moab, “Please let my father and mother stay with you until I know what God will do for me.” 4 So he left them in the care of the king of Moab, and they stayed with him the whole time David was in the stronghold.

5 Then the prophet Gad(C) said to David, “Don’t stay in the stronghold. Leave and return to the land of Judah.” So David left and went to the forest of Hereth.

6 Saul heard that David and his men had been discovered. At that time Saul was in Gibeah, sitting under the tamarisk tree(D) at the high place. His spear was in his hand, and all his servants were standing around him. 7 Saul said to his servants, “Listen, men of Benjamin: Is Jesse’s son going to give all of you fields and vineyards? Do you think he’ll make all of you commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds?(E) 8 That’s why all of you have conspired against me! Nobody tells me when my own son makes a covenant with Jesse’s son.(F) None of you cares about me(G) or tells me that my son has stirred up my own servant to wait in ambush for me, as is the case today.”

9 Then Doeg the Edomite,(H) who was in charge of Saul’s servants, answered, “I saw Jesse’s son come to Ahimelech son of Ahitub at Nob.(I) 10 Ahimelech inquired of the Lord for him(J) and gave him provisions.(K) He also gave him the sword of Goliath the Philistine.”(L)

Slaughter of the Priests

11 The king sent messengers to summon the priest Ahimelech son of Ahitub, and his father’s whole family, who were priests in Nob. All of them came to the king. 12 Then Saul said, “Listen, son of Ahitub!”

“I’m at your service,(M) my lord,” he said.

13 Saul asked him, “Why did you and Jesse’s son conspire against me? You gave him bread and a sword and inquired of God for him, so he could rise up against me and wait in ambush, as is the case today.”(N)

14 Ahimelech replied to the king, “Who among all your servants is as faithful as David?(O) He is the king’s son-in-law, captain of your bodyguard, and honored in your house. 15 Was today the first time I inquired of God for him?(P) Of course not! Please don’t let the king make an accusation against your servant or any of my father’s family, for your servant didn’t have any idea[a] about all this.”

16 But the king said, “You will die, Ahimelech—you and your father’s whole family!”

17 Then the king ordered the guards standing by him, “Turn and kill the priests of the Lord(Q) because they sided with David. For they knew he was fleeing, but they didn’t tell me.” But the king’s servants would not lift a hand to execute the priests of the Lord.

18 So the king said to Doeg, “Go and execute the priests!” So Doeg the Edomite went and executed the priests himself. On that day, he killed eighty-five men(R) who wore linen ephods.(S) 19 He also struck down Nob, the city of the priests, with the sword—both men and women, infants and nursing babies, oxen, donkeys, and sheep.(T)

20 However, one of the sons of Ahimelech son of Ahitub escaped. His name was Abiathar,(U) and he fled to David.(V) 21 Abiathar told David that Saul had killed the priests of the Lord. 22 Then David said to Abiathar, “I knew that Doeg the Edomite(W) was there that day and that he was sure to report to Saul. I myself am responsible for[b] the lives of everyone in your father’s family. 23 Stay with me. Don’t be afraid, for the one who wants to take my life wants to take your life.(X) You will be safe with me.”

Deliverance at Keilah

23 It was reported to David, “Look, the Philistines are fighting against Keilah(Y) and raiding the threshing floors.”

2 So David inquired of the Lord:(Z) “Should I launch an attack against these Philistines?”

The Lord answered David, “Launch an attack against the Philistines and rescue Keilah.”

3 But David’s men said to him, “Look, we’re afraid here in Judah; how much more if we go to Keilah against the Philistine forces!”

4 Once again, David inquired of the Lord, and the Lord answered him, “Go at once to Keilah, for I will hand the Philistines over to you.”(AA) 5 Then David and his men went to Keilah, fought against the Philistines, drove their livestock away, and inflicted heavy losses on them. So David rescued the inhabitants of Keilah. 6 Abiathar son of Ahimelech fled to David at Keilah, and he brought an ephod with him.

7 When it was reported to Saul that David had gone to Keilah, he said, “God has handed him over to me, for he has trapped himself by entering a town with barred gates.” 8 Then Saul summoned all the troops to go to war at Keilah and besiege David and his men.

9 When David learned that Saul was plotting evil against him, he said to the priest Abiathar,(AB) “Bring the ephod.”(AC)

10 Then David said, “Lord God of Israel, your servant has reliable information that Saul intends to come to Keilah and destroy the town because of me. 11 Will the citizens of Keilah hand me over to him? Will Saul come down as your servant has heard? Lord God of Israel, please tell your servant.”

The Lord answered, “He will come down.”

12 Then David asked, “Will the citizens of Keilah hand me and my men over to Saul?”

“They will,”(AD) the Lord responded.

13 So David and his men, numbering about six hundred,(AE) left Keilah at once and moved from place to place.(AF) When it was reported to Saul that David had escaped from Keilah, he called off the expedition. 14 David then stayed in the wilderness strongholds and in the hill country of the Wilderness of Ziph.(AG) Saul searched for him every day, but God did not hand David over to him.(AH)

A Renewed Covenant

15 David was in the Wilderness of Ziph in Horesh when he saw that Saul had come out to take his life. 16 Then Saul’s son Jonathan came to David in Horesh and encouraged him in his faith[c] in God,(AI) 17 saying, “Don’t be afraid, for my father Saul will never lay a hand on you. You yourself will be king over Israel,(AJ) and I’ll be your second-in-command. Even my father Saul knows it is true.”(AK) 18 Then the two of them made a covenant in the Lord’s presence.(AL) Afterward, David remained in Horesh, while Jonathan went home.

David’s Narrow Escape

19 Some Ziphites(AM) came up to Saul at Gibeah and said, “Isn’t it true that David is hiding among us in the strongholds in Horesh on the hill of Hachilah south of Jeshimon? 20 So now, whenever the king wants to come down, let him come down. As for us, we will be glad to hand him over to the king.”(AN)

21 “May you be blessed by the Lord,” replied Saul, “for you have shown concern for me.(AO) 22 Go and check again. Investigate[d] where he goes[e] and who has seen him there; they tell me he is extremely cunning. 23 Investigate[f] all the places where he hides. Then come back to me with accurate information, and I’ll go with you. If it turns out he really is in the region, I’ll search for him among all the clans[g] of Judah.” 24 So they went to Ziph ahead of Saul.

Now David and his men were in the wilderness near Maon(AP) in the Arabah south of Jeshimon, 25 and Saul and his men went to look for him. When David was told about it, he went down to the rock and stayed in the Wilderness of Maon. Saul heard of this and pursued David there.

26 Saul went along one side of the mountain and David and his men went along the other side. Even though David was hurrying to get away from Saul, Saul and his men were closing in on David and his men to capture them.(AQ) 27 Then a messenger came to Saul saying, “Come quickly, because the Philistines have raided the land!” 28 So Saul broke off his pursuit of David and went to engage the Philistines. Therefore, that place was named the Rock of Separation. 29 From there David went up and stayed in the strongholds of En-gedi.(AR)

1 Samuel 22:1-23:29, John 10:1-21, Psalms 115:1-18, Proverbs 15:18-19

Today is the 18th day of May welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I’m Brian it’s great to be here with you around this Global Campfire that is always burning. And no matter what time of day or night it is, whenever we come around the Global Campfire we are not alone. It is…there’s never a time that somebody else isn’t here at the campfire just listening to God’s Word and allowing it to be a part of the day or the evening, to be a part of our lives. So, it is wonderful, it is a joy to be here with you as we prepare to take the next step. We’ve been working our way through the book of first Samuel. We are firmly now in the story of David, but we are also firmly in the story of Israel’s first king, Saul. And we learned about…a lot about Saul as we were getting to know him, his fear of man, his instability. We’ve witnessed things. We’ve even looked at those things in our own lives. But now David has emerged, and he is a very threatening figure to Saul even though David’s not personally threatening Saul or even trying to do anything disloyal to Saul. Saul has become increasingly paranoid about David, plotting to kill him, trying to find a way to assassinate him, being angry with anyone who would protect him. Like he’s really paranoid. And that’s kinda where we’re gonna pick up the story today. We’re reading from the Christian Standard Bible this week. First Samuel chapter 22 and 23.

Commentary:

Okay. So, when we met Saul, he wasn’t a king yet. He was not a major player in his family or in his clan. He was looking for donkeys, right? Like, that’s where we started this story. But even as we’ve moved on from there, we’ve…we’ve watched Saul and some of his Achilles heels, basically, some of the things that are like fatal to his leadership. And the primary one would be he’s completely motivated by what people think about him, which doesn’t leave him with much of a core. And, so, we’ve watch him kinda swaying back-and-forth in all these kinds of situations because he…he seems to be more afraid about how he…how he looks to people than how we actually is. And we knew all that about Saul before this guy David ever entered the picture, but of course David did enter the picture. And again, we met him before he was famous about anything. He is also a lower person on the totem pole in his clan and family. He’s a shepherd who ends up on the battle lines to try to see about his brothers so he can report back to his father and ends up on the battlefield slaying the giant Goliath and achieving a tremendous national victory for the Israel…Israelite people over the Philistines. So, David go…goes from nothing to superhero, like national treasure, national hero and that has significant impact on Saul. And we’ve kind of watched that but at the same time we’ve watched David kind of with this confused look on his face almost like, “I’m just lucky to be here. I don’t know how this happened. I’m not trying to do anybody any wrong. I’m just trying to do what I’m told.” Like, he’s loyal to the King and we will watch that even though the king, King Saul, David’s father-in-law at this point is indeed trying to assassinate him. David isn’t trying to get rid of Saul he’s trying to remain faithful and loyal to Saul the best that he can while running for his life. And the contrasts are pretty stark in this story when we overlay them in our own lives and begin to examine our own hearts posture, our own motives for doing the things that we do. So, Saul…things have gotten so out of hand. Like he has gotten so paranoid that he needs music to calm him down, he is throwing spears, even at his own son Jonathan and in today’s reading he kills 80 innocent priests of God, right? So, David had gone to Ahimelech the priest, but Ahimelech didn’t know anything about what was going on at all. He’s completely innocent in the matter, and his whole family and the whole town, everything in it is wiped out because of Saul’s paranoia. Let us watch this. That’s what we’re intended to do here. That’s why the story’s in the Bible. We’re watching a path. We’re watching a systematic path in King Saul’s life and this is where when you’re swaying around in life trying to find an identity by trying to find whoever is going to give you the affirmation, whoever’s gonna to tell you what you want to hear, then it becomes very unstable and it becomes incredibly unstable when you’re in a leadership position. So, let’s watch this continue to play out. At the same time, we should be watching David. We’re gonna get to know David well, but at this point in David’s life he's…he’s got everything he needs. He’s a good-looking guy. He’s had to learn to become very cunning because he’s trying to stay alive. So, he’s had to fit inside into all kinds of situations just…just to stay alive but at the same time we see a different kind of core. Like David is being pursued to be snuffed out and his only hope for survival is in God and that is a different path than the one Saul is taking. And, so, we have these two stories that are intertwined with their two different paths that show us an awful lot…an awful lot about ourselves.

Prayer:

Holy Spirit, we invite You into this continually because this a point in the Bible, yes, where the era is changing, and things are changing. We've…we’ve navigated thousands of years since we started this story. So, this is where we are now and even as the era is changing in the Bible this interaction between King Saul and David is important for us in knowing not only how the story moves forward, but also this is a very rich moment in the year that we start to examine the interior life that we’re living and what is motivating it. So, come Holy Spirit we pray into all that we’ve read and into all that we will contemplate today we ask in the name of Jesus. Amen.

We’re stepping through the threshold into a week that has not been lived yet. And, so, it’s shiny and sparkly and waiting for us and we get to write the story of our lives upon this week and we’re doing the right thing by allowing God’s word to inform those decisions. So, here we are, brand new week. We’ll read from the Christian Standard Bible this week and continue our journey through the book of first Samuel where we are getting to know David and his tumultuous relationship with King Saul. So, today first Samuel chapters 20 and 21.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word. We thank You for bringing us into this shiny, sparkly new week. We even thank You for the passage of time as we look back over time whether that be one month, six months, one year, six years we see that we have…like…we’re here, that we’re still here, that You are faithful, that You have been faithful. And that tells us You will continue to be faithful. We just have to remember that this is a relationship and we must be faithful as well, loyal to You in all things. And, so, as we write the story of this week that is our mission, that is what is before us. You have been faithful. Have we been faithful? Come Holy Spirit that we might write the days of this week in loyalty and faithfulness we ask in the name of Jesus. Amen.
