2 Samuel 9:1-11:27, John 15:1-27, Psalms 119:49-64, Proverbs 16:1-3

Today is May 26th welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I am Brian it is wonderful to be here with you today as we continue through this final full week of this 5th month of the year. It is wonderful to be around the Global Campfire together and just know no matter what’s happening we are not alone. We are in this together. We always have been and here we are now together, allowing God’s word to come into our lives for today. So, we’re reading from the English Standard Version this week and continuing our journey through second Samuel. David, this little shepherd boy who became famous for killing a giant and then had to run for his life and grow up really fast and sort of live as a national hero, unwittingly, and has…has arisen to become the king of all Israel. And, so, we’re kind of moving through a patch where we’re…we’re understanding his reign. He is now the full-blown king of Israel. So, today, second Samuel chapters 9, 10, and 11.

Commentary:

Okay. So, Jesus is having a really moving, very profound conversation with His friends and this is obviously before He moves into His time of suffering. And, so, it’s a very, very intimate conversation that’s happening. And what He’s telling them is that that they need to abide in Him, to remain in Him, to stay in it. And the example that He uses is of a vine and branches. So, we can of a vine, we can think of a tree, we can think of branches that come out from that tree and we can say that we, you know, we know like if you go to cut the branch off the tree the branch is gonna die because it is disconnected from its source of life. And, so, Jesus is saying, “remain, endure, abide, stay where you are. Don’t disconnect from your source of life.” And I’ve been watching the trees. I watch trees a lot as the seasons go by. And, you know, we came out of winter and everything looks like it’s dormant, right? There’s…the trees are there, but there’s no life. It seems as if there is no life there. And yet then springtime comes and the season changes and life springs forth and then the season changes and its in full bloom. Like, life is a seasonal thing. And sometimes we can be in like a winter season and feel dormant and feel dead and fuel stuck and just like try to figure out a way to get away, like just become a part of a different tree, just get out of here even though that will disconnect us from our very source of life and we will die. If we would abide, if we would remain, the seasons will change, new life will come. This is often that we don’t see things…I mean like the seasons are in front of us in nature. The seasons of life are before us, but we rarely ever pay attention. And, so, things can be like we can be having a difficult season and decide we don’t want to have anything to do with the tree anymore. Like, we want to just go find something else even though if we would abide, if we would remain, if we would wait the seasons change. It’s just that so often we’re kind of sold this concept that we should be in complete overwhelming sense of harvest and blessing at all times. Like it should always be that way for us. We should just walk around with gold falling…falling out of the sky, like everything should work right for us. When that’s really not the nature of things. And we can be like, “yeah but I’m a child of God and the most-high God owns the cattle on a thousand hills” and all of these things are true, but if we’re…if we want to understand life on earth then we have to look at God in the flesh. Like, we have to look at the example that God gave for us in human form in the person Jesus and see how He lived and then set our expectations accordingly. And in our reading today He was telling them, “if they hate me, they’ll hate you too. Like, basically if you wanna bring light into the darkness, then this is so noble, and the harvest is ripe, and so ready, and I will be with you in it all. Like, you are intertwining yourself with God. Like the vine is God and you are the branches. Like, you have this chance to be a part of something really cosmically monumentally important, but it won’t be easy.” This is like sometimes when so…so often…and man…I have to like wave both hands over my head…like…I’m the chief…like me…me…me. When things aren’t going so well it’s so easy to go like, “what’s happening What have I done wrong? What’s going on? Why are you mad? Like where are you? Where have you gone?” When these are the very, very times to abide, right? Like to be rooted and to be still and to wait for the season to change.

Prayer:

Father, we invite You into that and we take it to heart. It’s so beautiful…it’s so beautiful, the kindness, the compassion, the instruction, the love that it is in today’s reading. And, so, as we personalize it, as we take it on board into our own lives, we invite Your Holy Spirit. And may we abide, may we rest in You, may we stay connected, may we remain in You and You in us today. Come Holy Spirit we pray. In the name of Jesus, we ask. Amen.

I never thought I’d come as a missionary to Mexico because I’ve always had a heart to reach people who never had a chance to hear the gospel. And this COVID is really hard on some of those unreached people groups who might even live in the city, but they don’t really speak the language, Spanish very well. They speak their indigenous languages. And, of course, this COVID is hitting them hard. The schools are saying, “teach your kids to read, teach you kids math.” While they’re literate, a lot of those parents. Their kids are in school, but they don’t know how to teach their kids. So, please be praying for us as missionaries here in Mexico reaching the indigenous people groups of Mexico. And pray for wisdom, pray for the people groups in Mexico, that they would come to know the Lord Jesus. Thanks guys. Bye.

I thank You for her and her desire to start a church. And I also want to pray for her sister’s salvation Lord. You know what is holding her back from You and I just pray that You will soften her heart and change her and…and bring her to You. I also want to pray for Joe in Pennsylvania and his family as they have a family member who’s transitioning from this life to the next. Lord please give them peace and comfort and I pray that You will be with Joe’s Father and that he will not suffer and that he will be with You in heaven. I also want to lift up the lady who has 100-year-old house. I pray for…for her. Please give her direction and show her what You have next to her Lord. Bless her and make sure that all her needs are met. I pray that You will help with the sale of the house and bring some…

This is Tired but Trusting in Texas but I’m changing my name to Trusting in God in Texas because even though I’m still tired…I apologize that my voice is always like this from my sinus problems…and even though I’m still tired I trust is in God and God alone and I’m trusting Him to strengthen me for all the work He’s called me to do to take care of these children and that even some adults with these disabilities. Will you pray for our clinic, pray for us, pray for me and my husband to be able to keep on going and do what God has called us to do. But I’m also calling in today to pray for Chris a lay pastor from New York who now lives in Washington with his wife’s family and his new baby. And he’s had his church fall apart and he’s losing faith. I’m just praying God that you will help him be faithful and that you will help him to remember that you are a God and that you have him and that you will keep him as the apple of your eye. Zechariah 2 verse 8 - for thus says the Lord of hosts, he sent me after glory to the nations which plunder you for, he who touches you touches the apple of his eye. Please help him Lord Psalm 17 verse 8 - keep me as the apple of your eye. Please just help him Lord to cry out to you to cast all his cares upon you. First Peter 5:6 and 7 - For you are the one who holds his hand. Psalm 18 verse 6 - you hear his prayer. Thank you, God Almighty in Jesus’ name.

2 Samuel 9-11

David's Kindness to Mephibosheth

And David said, “Is there still anyone left of the house of Saul, that I may (A)show him kindness for Jonathan's sake?” Now there was a servant of the house of Saul whose name was (B)Ziba, and they called him to David. And the king said to him, “Are you Ziba?” And he said, “I am your servant.” And the king said, “Is there not still someone of the house of Saul, that I may show (C)the kindness of God to him?” Ziba said to the king, “There is still a son of (D)Jonathan; he is crippled in his feet.” The king said to him, “Where is he?” And Ziba said to the king, “He is in the house of (E)Machir the son of Ammiel, at Lo-debar.” Then King David sent and brought him from the house of Machir the son of Ammiel, at Lo-debar. And (F)Mephibosheth the son of Jonathan, son of Saul, came to David and fell on his face and paid homage. And David said, “Mephibosheth!” And he answered, “Behold, I am your servant.” And David said to him, “Do not fear, (G)for I will show you kindness for the sake of your father Jonathan, and I will restore to you all the land of Saul your father, and (H)you shall eat at my table always.” And he paid homage and said, “What is your servant, that you should show regard for (I)a dead dog such as I?”

Then the king called Ziba, Saul's servant, and said to him, “All that belonged to Saul and to all his house I have given to your master's grandson. 10 And you and your sons and your servants shall till the land for him and shall bring in the produce, that your master's grandson may have bread to eat. But Mephibosheth your master's grandson (J)shall always eat at my table.” Now Ziba had (K)fifteen sons and twenty servants. 11 Then Ziba said to the king, “According to all that my lord the king commands his servant, so will your servant do.” So Mephibosheth (L)ate at David's[a] table, like one of the king's sons. 12 And Mephibosheth had a young son, (M)whose name was Mica. And all who lived in Ziba's house became Mephibosheth's servants. 13 So Mephibosheth lived in Jerusalem, for (N)he ate always at the king's table. Now (O)he was lame in both his feet.

David Defeats Ammon and Syria

10 (P)After this the king of the Ammonites died, and Hanun his son reigned in his place. And David said, “I will deal loyally[b] with Hanun the son of (Q)Nahash, as his father dealt loyally with me.” So David sent by his servants to console him concerning his father. And David's servants came into the land of the Ammonites. But the princes of the Ammonites said to Hanun their lord, “Do you think, because David has sent comforters to you, that he is honoring your father? Has not David sent his servants to you to search the city and to spy it out and to overthrow it?” So Hanun took David's servants and shaved off half the beard of each and cut off their garments in the middle, (R)at their hips, and sent them away. When it was told David, he sent to meet them, for the men were greatly ashamed. And the king said, “Remain at Jericho until your beards have grown and then return.”

When the Ammonites saw that they had become a stench to David, the Ammonites sent and hired the Syrians of (S)Beth-rehob, and (T)the Syrians of Zobah, 20,000 foot soldiers, and the king of (U)Maacah with 1,000 men, and the men of (V)Tob, 12,000 men. And when David heard of it, he sent Joab and all the host of (W)the mighty men. And the Ammonites came out and drew up in battle array at the entrance of the gate, and (X)the Syrians of Zobah and of Rehob and (Y)the men of Tob and Maacah were by themselves in the open country.

When Joab saw that the battle was set against him both in front and in the rear, he chose some of the best men of Israel and arrayed them against the Syrians. 10 The rest of his men he put in the charge of Abishai his brother, and he arrayed them against the Ammonites. 11 And he said, “If the Syrians are too strong for me, then you shall help me, but if the Ammonites are too strong for you, then I will come and help you. 12 (Z)Be of good courage, and (AA)let us be courageous for our people, and for the cities of our God, and (AB)may the Lord do what seems good to him.” 13 So Joab and the people who were with him drew near to battle against the Syrians, and they fled before him. 14 And when the Ammonites saw that the Syrians fled, they likewise fled before Abishai and entered the city. Then Joab returned from fighting against the Ammonites and came to Jerusalem.

15 But when the Syrians saw that they had been defeated by Israel, they gathered themselves together. 16 And Hadadezer sent and brought out the Syrians who were beyond (AC)the Euphrates.[c] They came to Helam, with (AD)Shobach the commander of the army of Hadadezer at their head. 17 And when it was told David, he gathered all Israel together and crossed the Jordan and came to Helam. The Syrians arrayed themselves against David and fought with him. 18 And the Syrians fled before Israel, and David killed of the Syrians the men of 700 chariots, and 40,000 horsemen, and wounded (AE)Shobach the commander of their army, so that he died there. 19 And when all the kings who were servants of Hadadezer saw that they had been defeated by Israel, they made peace with Israel (AF)and became subject to them. So the Syrians were afraid to save the Ammonites anymore.

David and Bathsheba

11 (AG)(AH)In the spring of the year, the time when kings go out to battle, David sent Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel. And they ravaged the Ammonites and besieged (AI)Rabbah. But David remained at Jerusalem.

It happened, late one afternoon, when David arose from his couch and was walking on (AJ)the roof of the king's house, that he saw from the roof a woman bathing; and the woman was very beautiful. And David sent and inquired about the woman. And one said, “Is not this (AK)Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of (AL)Uriah the Hittite?” So David sent messengers and took her, and she came to him, and he lay with her. ((AM)Now she had been purifying herself from her uncleanness.) Then she returned to her house. And the woman conceived, and she sent and told David, “I am pregnant.”

So David sent word to Joab, “Send me Uriah the Hittite.” And Joab sent Uriah to David. When Uriah came to him, David asked how Joab was doing and how the people were doing and how the war was going. Then David said to Uriah, “Go down to your house and (AN)wash your feet.” And Uriah went out of the king's house, and there followed him a present from the king. But Uriah slept at the door of the king's house with all the servants of his lord, and did not go down to his house. 10 When they told David, “Uriah did not go down to his house,” David said to Uriah, “Have you not come from a journey? Why did you not go down to your house?” 11 Uriah said to David, (AO)“The ark and Israel and Judah dwell in booths, and my lord Joab and (AP)the servants of my lord are camping in the open field. Shall I then go to my house, to eat and to drink and to lie with my wife? As you live, and (AQ)as your soul lives, I will not do this thing.” 12 Then David said to Uriah, “Remain here today also, and tomorrow I will send you back.” So Uriah remained in Jerusalem that day and the next. 13 And David invited him, and he ate in his presence and drank, (AR)so that he made him drunk. And in the evening he went out to lie on his couch with (AS)the servants of his lord, but he did not go down to his house.

14 In the morning David (AT)wrote a letter to Joab and sent it by the hand of Uriah. 15 In the letter he wrote, “Set Uriah in the forefront of the hardest fighting, and then draw back from him, (AU)that he may be struck down, and die.” 16 And as Joab was besieging the city, he assigned Uriah to the place where he knew there were valiant men. 17 And the men of the city came out and fought with Joab, and some of the servants of David among the people fell. Uriah the Hittite also died. 18 Then Joab sent and told David all the news about the fighting. 19 And he instructed the messenger, “When you have finished telling all the news about the fighting to the king, 20 then, if the king's anger rises, and if he says to you, ‘Why did you go so near the city to fight? Did you not know that they would shoot from the wall? 21 (AV)Who killed Abimelech the son of Jerubbesheth? Did not a woman cast an upper millstone on him from the wall, so that he died at Thebez? Why did you go so near the wall?’ then you shall say, ‘Your servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also.’”

22 So the messenger went and came and told David all that Joab had sent him to tell. 23 The messenger said to David, “The men gained an advantage over us and came out against us in the field, but we drove them back to the entrance of the gate. 24 Then the archers shot at your servants from the wall. Some of the king's servants are dead, and your servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also.” 25 David said to the messenger, “Thus shall you say to Joab, ‘Do not let this matter displease you, for the sword devours now one and now another. Strengthen your attack against the city and overthrow it.’ And encourage him.”

26 When the wife of Uriah heard that Uriah her husband was dead, she lamented over her husband. 27 And when the mourning was over, David sent and brought her to his house, and (AW)she became his wife and bore him a son. But the thing that David had done displeased the Lord.

John 15

I Am the True Vine

15 “I am the (A)true vine, and my Father is (B)the vinedresser. (C)Every branch in me that does not bear fruit (D)he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, (E)that it may bear more fruit. Already (F)you are clean (G)because of the word that I have spoken to you. (H)Abide (I)in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine; (J)you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that (K)bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. If anyone does not abide in me (L)he is thrown away like a branch and withers; (M)and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. If (N)you abide in me, and my words abide in you, (O)ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. (P)By this my Father is glorified, that you (Q)bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples. (R)As the Father has loved me, (S)so have I loved you. Abide in my love. 10 (T)If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as (U)I have kept (V)my Father's commandments and abide in his love. 11 These things I have spoken to you, (W)that my joy may be in you, and that (X)your joy may be full.

12 (Y)“This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. 13 (Z)Greater love has no one than this, (AA)that someone lay down his life for his friends. 14 You are (AB)my friends (AC)if you do what I command you. 15 (AD)No longer do I call you servants,[a] for the servant (AE)does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for (AF)all that I have heard from my Father (AG)I have made known to you. 16 You did not choose me, but (AH)I chose you and appointed you that you should go and (AI)bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that (AJ)whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you. 17 These things I command you, (AK)so that you will love one another.

The Hatred of the World

18 (AL)“If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. 19 (AM)If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because (AN)you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. 20 Remember the word that I said to you: (AO)‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, (AP)they will also persecute you. (AQ)If they kept my word, they will also keep yours. 21 But (AR)all these things they will do to you (AS)on account of my name, (AT)because they do not know him who sent me. 22 If I had not come and spoken to them, (AU)they would not have been guilty of sin,[b] but now they have no excuse for their sin. 23 (AV)Whoever hates me hates my Father also. 24 (AW)If I had not done among them the works that no one else did, (AX)they would not be guilty of sin, but now they have (AY)seen and hated both me and my Father. 25 But (AZ)the word that is written in their Law must be fulfilled: (BA)‘They hated me without a cause.’

26 “But (BB)when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, (BC)he will bear witness about me. 27 And (BD)you also will bear witness, (BE)because you have been with me (BF)from the beginning.

Psalm 119:49-64

Zayin

49 Remember (A)your word to your servant,
in which you have made me (B)hope.
50 This is (C)my comfort in my affliction,
that your promise (D)gives me life.
51 (E)The insolent utterly deride me,
but I do not (F)turn away from your law.
52 When I think of your rules from of old,
I take comfort, O Lord.
53 (G)Hot indignation seizes me because of the wicked,
who forsake your law.
54 Your statutes have been my songs
in the house of my (H)sojourning.
55 I (I)remember your name in the night, O Lord,
and keep your law.
56 This blessing has fallen to me,
that (J)I have kept your precepts.

Heth

57 (K)The Lord is my portion;
I promise to keep your words.
58 I (L)entreat your favor with all my heart;
be gracious to me (M)according to your promise.
59 When I (N)think on my ways,
I turn my feet to your testimonies;
60 I hasten and do not delay
to keep your commandments.
61 Though (O)the cords of the wicked ensnare me,
I do not (P)forget your law.
62 At (Q)midnight I rise to praise you,
because of your (R)righteous rules.
63 (S)I am a companion of all who fear you,
of those who keep your precepts.
64 (T)The earth, O Lord, is full of your steadfast love;
(U)teach me your statutes!

Proverbs 16:1-3

16 The plans of the heart belong to man,
but (A)the answer of the tongue is from the Lord.
(B)All the ways of a man are pure in his own eyes,

(D)Commit your work to the Lord,
and your plans will be established.

2 Samuel 7:1-8:18, John 14:15-31, Psalms 119:33-48, Proverbs 15:33

Today is the 25th day of May welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I am Brian it is great to be here with you today as we move ourselves into this new week, the last week of this…well…the last full week of this month. And as with all weeks and months we have some territory to cover. And the territory that we are covering right now, at least in the Old Testament, is in the book of second Samuel. And we are learning about David’s ascension to the throne and his reign as king of Israel after King Saul’s death in battle with the Philistines. Today second Samuel chapters 7 and 8.

Commentary:

Okay. So, as we moved through the weekend, we continued our journey through second Samuel, which led us deeper into the story of David and in particular his ascension to the throne. So, we know that Saul, you know, he saw a spiritist or medium and called up Samuel who told him he was gonna die in a day and he did and that was in a battle with the Philistines. And, you know, Saul and his sons died and they were beheaded and their bodies were hung from the walls of Beth-shan and all this happened while David was back in his…the town that he’d been given, the Philistine city of Ziklag. And he finds out that Saul is dead and there’s a systematic posture of heart that David has that is really, really important to his ascension to the throne. So, when David finds out that Saul is dead, he finds out from an Amalekite who had been in the battle and who claims to have been the one who killed Saul. David’s response is basically, “how would you dare touch God’s anointed”, right? So, that man loses his life because he confessed or claimed to have done something David had an opportunity to do on a number of occasions but wouldn’t dare. And the people see this. Like this is character that they are watching. And then David becomes king of Judah. So, one of the tribes of Israel. And he’s raining from Hebron and there’s kind of all this tumult going on and there are a couple of other assassinations that happen. One was Saul’s general, Abner. So, David’s general was named Joab and Abner had killed Joab's…one of Joab’s brothers in battle. So, as the intrigue happens David becomes king of…of Judah. Then the next in line in Saul’s house Ishbosheth comes king of Israel, but in the end, Abner defects from Ishbosheth and comes to King David and says basically, you know, like “I can hand all the tribes over to you. They can all enter into a covenant with you and you can become a king.” So, as Abner’s leaving from that meeting Joab finds out about it and in trickery assassinates Abner in a time that is peacetime, that is not war. So, these are…like Abner’s a pretty famous person he’s the commander of the armies of Israel. So, his death doesn’t go unnoticed and the people think that or assume that maybe David has something to do with that political assassination. So, they’re watching him. David has nothing to do with it. He mourns Abner. He tears his cloths. He writes songs. He calls out the injustice of it. And this is character. And this the people are watching because it’s a stark contrast to the way Saul did things and his very paranoid sort of reactionary way. David’s enemies are being done away with, but David hasn’t done it and he mourns it, and this is turning the hearts of the people. And then finally Ishbosheth, the king of Israel, is assassinated and Ishbosheth’s head, the son of Saul, is brought to David. And again, same thing kinda happens. Like this person would have the audacity to touch God’s anointed. And, so, this person is also…also loses…loses their life. But what becomes apparent then to the people is that David isn’t trying to do away with the house of Saul, and basically trying to move through the country assassinating anyone with an allegiance to Saul to sort of wipe that out as has been custom, not only biblically but also historically all along. David didn’t do these things and he mourned them, and he called them out as evil or wrong. And that helped the people like sort of coalesce around David because they could see the character, the same character that they had been seeing all along as he led Israel, even as he fled and was like on the run for his life. He treated with respect the office of the King. So, now we’ve reached this point at which David is fully in control. He is the king of all Israel. And what becomes sort of apparent as the days will go by is that once the pressure is off, once David’s completely in control, that’s when things start going a bit sideways and that is a lesson because that is how it is in our lives as well.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word and we thank You for bringing us into this week and we look forward to all that You will speak to us through Your word this week. And we take to heart what we read in the Proverbs today. “A fear of the Lord is instruction in wisdom.” And this year all along, this year of vision, this is a strange year that has come upon us. We began asking for eyes to see. We began understanding that wisdom is at every crossroads in our lives if we’ll slow down enough. He is calling out to us and the fear of the Lord is instruction in wisdom. Like we gain in wisdom as we have on fear and respect and are overwhelmed by who You are. And, so, we worship You and we humble ourselves before You. In fact, it’s not just a humble posture. It’s a posture of completely surrender. We surrender to You, most high God and ask Your Holy Spirit to instruct us in wisdom. Come Jesus we pray. In Your mighty name. We ask. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hi DAB family this is Joe from Pennsylvania just calling for prayer again. My wife and I are doing better in our relationship. I called about that a while ago. But I called for payer because we’re selling our house and moving, and the closing is scheduled for the 29th of May. Today’s the 21st in the morning. So, we have a lot to do and I’m kind of stressing about that, but we’re moving in with her mother-in-law…with my mother-in-law and my sister-in-law in their house. So, it’s gonna be a little bit of a downsizing for us and a little bit of an adjustment. But our main goal is to get out of debt because that has really hampered us the past couple of years, especially with this COVID thing, it’s only gotten worse. My daughter’s name is Victoria, my wife’s name is Teresa, and my name is Joe. If you could just pray for all of us that God would be with us in this next step and lead us and direct us and especially with our daughter. She’s 12, that He would…that He would give her a special touch and just relieve the anxiety for all of us. Thank you. Love you guys.

This message is for father of Josh, May 15th episode and who also lost his…his other son. And Josh, I pray for you. I cover you with the Lord’s protective right-hand. Our Lord is mighty to save and in the name of Jesus, Josh, I rebuke spirits of depression, anxiety, hatred of yourself, hatred of life. And Lord I pray that You would replace these lies and…and the enemy’s vicious attacks on Josh, that You would replace it with Your presence oh God, Your Holy Spirit oh God, that You would fill Josh with an embrace of Your love, a witness to Your power, and Lord a new life that You are mighty to save. And Lord save Josh. Save him from himself. Save him from the enemy. Deliver him from this oppression. And Lord I pray that You would bless the family, the father, especially, with a spirit of wisdom that only comes from above, that it is filled with supernatural blessing of You Lord, that every step, every suggestion, every prescription, every introduction to any professional or counselor or friend Lord would just be so divinely ordered that it is exactly what Josh needs, it is a timely word, a timely embrace. And I pray for you Josh, I pray that this would draw …

Hey, DABbers I’m a new listserv my name Ephiniah I’m 23. And, yeah, I started listening back in January. It was on and off - distractions, life. And I’ve never really been into religion. I’ve never really prayed like that. I’m a new believer as well. I’ve known of God, but I didn’t know him and now in my life I want to because last summer I was in a dark place a bad relationship. I started praying heavily to Him because I needed help. And when He answered…it blew my mind how it happened…but when He answered it was like, “okay, hundred percent, you know, I hear you.” Thank you. And now you are more focus because emotions, feelings, all of that is difficult for me but it’s like I’ve always looked for things in other people. So, I do listen to sermons, all of it. I don’t read the Bible, that’s why I have this because, you know, it’s hard to read the Bible. But I know that whatever I need He can give me as long as I follow Him, and I trust Him, and I do trust Him. I pray for guidance, wisdom. Guide my path. You know just help me because I need You in my life. But I feel like am failing, like I’m not doing as I should. I know I’m not. I’m fighting temptation in myself. So, guys, just pray for me because whatever His will and purpose out of me is, I want to do it and I want to do it right. I just need strength.

Good morning family I’m calling for Ben, Mike in California’s son, a 14-year-old boy who ran away a couple of days ago. His father called in in anguish and filed a police report. Father, we call on You concerning our boy. You know where he is. You know his heart. You know what he’s going through right now. We’re calling on You to come to the rescue of this child, a beloved child of God that You’ve created at Your image. We pray that the pains and the hurt that caused him to run away, Father You will address them, that You will call him back to You, to Your love, to Your restoration, to Your relationship, to Your fellowship and return him home safely to his family, to his Father who’s calling in anguish asking for You to intervene Father. You are our Father. You are our maker. You know all our needs. You know us best than we know ourselves. We cry unto You Father. Please, show up, bring up our child, bring him home safely. Protect him where he is. Shower him with Your love. Let him hear Your voice. Call him back home in Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

Hi this is Ruth from California. I heard you called in the other day about your daughter. I want you to know that you were in my heart along with your wife and your family. Your daughter is dealing with a difficult time in her life and I’m sure that she, you know, was upset with you because she doesn’t know how to rectify the situation. I don’t know where she is spiritually, but she needs a lot of love from you. She needs to know how much this family loves her, how much God loves her and that He’s there for her as well. Know in my heart I will be praying, and I’d love to hear how…how she comes to this because she will. But it’s a difficult thing for, especially, I think girls during this time in this __. I know I had it in my life and I wonder times who this…who the daughter was that I had, that she was not the daughter that I knew. But God willing He’ll bring her through it. And we love you and will keep you all in prayer. Bye-bye.

2 Samuel 7-8

The Lord's Covenant with David

(A)Now when the king lived in his house and the Lord (B)had given him rest from all his surrounding enemies, the king said to (C)Nathan the prophet, “See now, I dwell (D)in a house of cedar, but the ark of God dwells (E)in a tent.” And Nathan said to the king, (F)“Go, do all that is in your heart, for the Lord is with you.”

But that same night the word of the Lord came to Nathan, “Go and tell my servant David, ‘Thus says the Lord: (G)Would you build me a house to dwell in? I have not lived in a house (H)since the day I brought up the people of Israel from Egypt to this day, but I have been moving about (I)in a tent for my dwelling. In all places where (J)I have moved with all the people of Israel, did I speak a word with (K)any of the judges[a] of Israel, whom I commanded (L)to shepherd my people Israel, saying, “Why have you not built me a house of cedar?”’ Now, therefore, thus you shall say to my servant David, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, (M)I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep, that you should be prince[b] over my people Israel. (N)And I have been with you wherever you went and have cut off all your enemies from before you. And I will make for you a great name, like the name of the great ones of the earth. 10 And I will appoint a place for my people Israel (O)and will plant them, so that they may dwell in their own place (P)and be disturbed no more. (Q)And violent men shall afflict them no more, as formerly, 11 (R)from the time that I appointed judges over my people Israel. And (S)I will give you rest from all your enemies. Moreover, the Lord declares to you that (T)the Lord will make you a house. 12 (U)When your days are fulfilled and (V)you lie down with your fathers, (W)I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. 13 (X)He shall build a house for my name, and (Y)I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. 14 (Z)I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son. When he commits iniquity, (AA)I will discipline him with the rod of men, with the stripes of the sons of men, 15 (AB)but my steadfast love will not depart from him, (AC)as I took it from Saul, whom I put away from before you. 16 (AD)And your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever before me.[c] (AE)Your throne shall be established forever.’” 17 In accordance with all these words, and in accordance with all this vision, Nathan spoke to David.

David's Prayer of Gratitude

18 Then King David went in and sat before the Lord and said, (AF)“Who am I, O Lord God, and what is my house, that you have brought me thus far? 19 And yet this was a small thing in your eyes, O Lord God. (AG)You have spoken also of your servant's house for a great while to come, and this is instruction for mankind, O Lord God! 20 And what more can David say to you? (AH)For you know your servant, O Lord God! 21 Because of your promise, and according to your own heart, you have brought about all this greatness, to make your servant know it. 22 (AI)Therefore you are great, O Lord God. (AJ)For there is none like you, and there is no God besides you, according to all that we have heard with our ears. 23 (AK)And who is like your people Israel, the one nation on earth whom God went to redeem to be his people, making himself a name (AL)and doing for them[d] great and awesome things by driving out before your people,[e] whom (AM)you redeemed for yourself from Egypt, a nation and its gods? 24 (AN)And you established for yourself your people Israel to be your people forever. And you, O Lord, became their God. 25 And now, O Lord God, confirm forever the word that you have spoken concerning your servant and concerning his house, and do as you have spoken. 26 And your name will be magnified forever, saying, ‘The Lord of hosts is God over Israel,’ and the house of your servant David will be established before you. 27 For you, O Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, have made this revelation to your servant, saying, ‘I will build you a house.’ Therefore your servant has found courage to pray this prayer to you. 28 And now, O Lord God, you are God, and (AO)your words are true, and you have promised this good thing to your servant. 29 Now therefore may it please you to bless the house of your servant, so that it may continue forever before you. For you, O Lord God, have spoken, (AP)and with your blessing shall the house of your servant be blessed forever.”

David's Victories

(AQ)After this David defeated the Philistines and subdued them, and David took (AR)Metheg-ammah out of the hand of the Philistines.

(AS)And he defeated Moab and he measured them with a line, making them lie down on the ground. Two lines he measured to be put to death, and one full line to be spared. And the Moabites (AT)became servants to David and (AU)brought tribute.

David also defeated (AV)Hadadezer the son of Rehob, king of (AW)Zobah, as he went to restore his power at the river Euphrates. (AX)And David took from him 1,700 horsemen, and 20,000 foot soldiers. And David (AY)hamstrung all the chariot horses but left enough for 100 chariots. (AZ)And when the (BA)Syrians of Damascus came to help (BB)Hadadezer king of (BC)Zobah, David struck down 22,000 men of the Syrians. Then David put garrisons in Aram of Damascus, and the Syrians (BD)became servants to David and brought tribute. (BE)And the Lord gave victory to David wherever he went. And David took (BF)the shields of gold that were carried by the servants of Hadadezer and brought them to Jerusalem. And from Betah and from Berothai, cities of Hadadezer, King David took very much bronze.

When Toi king of (BG)Hamath heard that David had defeated the whole army of Hadadezer, 10 Toi sent his son Joram to King David, to ask about his health and to bless him because he had fought against Hadadezer and defeated him, for Hadadezer had often been at war with Toi. And Joram brought with him articles of silver, of gold, and of bronze. 11 (BH)These also King David dedicated to the Lord, together with the silver and gold that he dedicated from all the nations he subdued, 12 from Edom, (BI)Moab, (BJ)the Ammonites, (BK)the Philistines, (BL)Amalek, and from the spoil of Hadadezer the son of Rehob, king of (BM)Zobah.

13 And David made a name for himself when he returned from striking down 18,000 Edomites in (BN)the Valley of Salt. 14 Then he put garrisons in Edom; throughout all Edom he put garrisons, (BO)and all the Edomites became David's servants. And the Lord gave victory to David wherever he went.

David's Officials

15 So David reigned over all Israel. And David administered justice and equity to all his people. 16 (BP)Joab the son of Zeruiah was over the army, and (BQ)Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud was recorder, 17 and (BR)Zadok the son of Ahitub and Ahimelech the son of Abiathar were priests, and (BS)Seraiah was secretary, 18 and (BT)Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was over[f] the (BU)Cherethites and the Pelethites, and David's sons were priests.

John 14:15-31

Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit

15 (A)“If you love me, you will (B)keep my commandments. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another (C)Helper,[a] to be with you forever, 17 even (D)the Spirit of truth, (E)whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and (F)will be[b] in you.

18 “I will not leave you as orphans; (G)I will come to you. 19 (H)Yet a little while and the world will see me no more, but (I)you will see me. (J)Because I live, you also will live. 20 (K)In that day you will know that (L)I am in my Father, and (M)you in me, and (N)I in you. 21 (O)Whoever has my commandments and (P)keeps them, he it is who loves me. And (Q)he who loves me (R)will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and (S)manifest myself to him.” 22 (T)Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, “Lord, how is it (U)that you will manifest yourself to us, and not to the world?” 23 Jesus answered him, (V)“If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and (W)we will come to him and (X)make our home with him. 24 Whoever does not love me does not keep my words. And (Y)the word that you hear is not mine but the Father's who sent me.

25 “These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you. 26 But the (Z)Helper, the Holy Spirit, (AA)whom the Father will send in my name, (AB)he will teach you all things and (AC)bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. 27 (AD)Peace I leave with you; (AE)my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. (AF)Let not your hearts be troubled, neither (AG)let them be afraid. 28 (AH)You heard me say to you, (AI)‘I am going away, and I will come to you.’ If you loved me, you would have rejoiced, because I (AJ)am going to the Father, for (AK)the Father is greater than I. 29 And (AL)now I have told you before it takes place, so that when it does take place you may believe. 30 I will no longer talk much with you, for (AM)the ruler of this world is coming. (AN)He has no claim on me, 31 but I do (AO)as the Father has commanded me, (AP)so that the world may know that I love the Father. Rise, let us go from here.

Psalm 119:33-48

He

33 (A)Teach me, O Lord, the way of your statutes;
and I will keep it (B)to the end.[a]
34 (C)Give me understanding, that I may keep your law
and observe it with my whole heart.
35 (D)Lead me in the path of your commandments,
for I (E)delight in it.
36 (F)Incline my heart to your testimonies,
and not to (G)selfish gain!
37 (H)Turn my eyes from looking at worthless things;
and (I)give me life in your ways.
38 (J)Confirm to your servant your promise,
(K)that you may be feared.
39 Turn away the (L)reproach that I dread,
for your rules are good.
40 Behold, I (M)long for your precepts;
(N)in your righteousness give me life!

Waw

41 Let your (O)steadfast love come to me, O Lord,
your salvation (P)according to your promise;
42 then (Q)shall I have an answer for him (R)who taunts me,
for I trust in your word.
43 And take not the word of truth utterly out of my mouth,
for my (S)hope is in your rules.
44 I will keep your law continually,
forever and ever,
45 and I shall walk (T)in a wide place,
for I have (U)sought your precepts.
46 I will also speak of your testimonies (V)before kings
and shall not be put to shame,
47 for I (W)find my delight in your commandments,
which I love.
48 I will (X)lift up my hands toward your commandments, which I love,
and I will (Y)meditate on your statutes.

2 Samuel 4:1-6:23, John 13:31-14:14, Psalms 119:17-32, Proverbs 15:31-32

Today is the 24th day of May welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I’m Brian it is wonderful to be here with you today as we reach out our collective hands and twist the knob and open the door and walk into this brand-new week together. Everything is out in front of us. We have this reset. This is the last full week of the 5th month of the year. Yeah, a week from today is the last day of this month. So, we are oriented, we are ready to live into this, we are ready to hear what God has to say through His Word into our lives this week as we join our hearts and minds around this Global Campfire. So, we got a brand-new week and we’ll read from the English Standard Version this week and we’ll pick up the story. And at this point the story is highly focused…well…on somewhat the tumultuous times as King Saul has died and King David has become king of Judah, the tribe of Judah. And, so, there’s kind of all this unrest about who’s going to be the king and how and all the intrigue and drama around that and people are watching David, they’re watching what he does, how his posture is. And, so, we continue with that story today, second Samuel chapters 4, 5, and 6.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for this new week that we are walking into and we…we mark this every week by just considering the fact that it’s in front of us, it’s the future, it’s what we are immediately walking into and we…we do this because we don’t want to walk into a blindly just kind of floating along. We want to walk into it intentionally with You and we’ve learned from our reading as we begin this week is that we are to love one another as You have loved us and…oh…that's…in our own strength that is not possible. We can try and try and try and try and maybe make it through a day, but it…without Your Holy Spirit guiding our steps we can’t do that, and we confess that. And, so, we see that in order to obey You we need You. And, so, come Holy Spirit we surrender to You and invite You to show us what it looks like in this coming week to love each other as You have loved us. Come Holy Spirit into this we ask in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hi DAB family this is Rosie from Spring Hill. I am calling in to Lisa from San Jose. Just wanted to give you my condolences for your husband Craig. I am a hospice nurse. I just started a few months ago so I don’t have a lot of experience but I do know that a lot of times people feel like they don’t do enough or don’t do a good job and I just want to let you know that I know you said that you want to do God’s will and I believe that being there with your husband and spending the time with him and loving him even though it was a scary time and difficult to watch and very sad and emotional you stayed with him and loved him and I think that was doing God’s will. I think that was very Christlike. And I know you said he had a little pain at the end and that it was a little bit better. And I’ve heard it explained to me that it’s kind of like your last struggle or last wrestling with God and I’m glad that he gave you that the gift of him being alert to read Brian’s book Sneezing Jesus together. That sounds special and just something that beautiful that God gave you as a last memory, happy memory together. And I hope that you’re doing well, and I hope that you are feeling God’s presence and His peace and comfort.

Hi it’s Sherry from Kansas and this is for those people who have worked hard and sacrificed to build their own businesses and to make progress toward achieving their goals and now because of what’s happening in the world they could potentially lose their businesses or lose what they’ve worked so hard for. And I know that God knows, He’s seen your works, he’s seen your sacrifice. But I just want to say that sometimes when I’ve felt like I lost everything that I would be worshiping the Lord and all of a sudden it would hit me that I didn’t need anything in this world. I…there was nothing I needed to pray for because I had everything, I needed in Him. So, I just want to say that we need to keep our hearts and our minds set on him and regardless of what’s going on around us He is truly all and everything that we need. [singing starts] turn your hearts upon Jesus. Look full in His wonderful face and the things of earth will grow strangely dim in the light of His glory and grace [singing stops]. God bless you all. Bye-bye.

Good morning this message is for Chris from Michigan. My name is Christina Rose I’m in Denver right now and I wanted to pray for you about the situation with your teenage daughter who is feeling hopeless. I’m a mom, I have daughters, they’re in their 20s. And storms come and go in this life. Now, I am a survivor of a teenage suicide attempt myself. I went to school in South America and had a class of five people and the isolation was very depressing to me. And fortunately, my mother intervened and…as I’m still here today. I look on that now and remember how painful it was for my mom when she saw what was going on and such a distressing time for parent. Storms come and go. Isolation is the enemy. Even if your daughter can’t be with her friends just do whatever you can to back her up and just…just tell her would she be tempted…I look back and I think…I said I would have missed out on marriage and children and surfing under the Golden Gate Bridge and I mean a million wonderful things if I had just given up in the middle of the storm. And just encourage her to hang on. Things turn around. That is the way of life. We go through storms. Now my dad did successfully take his life and I have to tell you I feel him around me all the time saying he’s sorry and feeling regretful that he hadn’t seen the big picture and if he had he would’ve stayed. That leaving solves nothing and your…your loved ones, you have to watch your loved one’s carry-on without you which is very painful. You can write to at christinarose.org. God bless you and your family, and I pray that every day you would be well.

Hey DAB family just calling to say hi and this is Reggie from Iowa and hi dad if you’re listening. And I’m calling to pray for Chris from formerly New York City who just called in and he said he was healed from an infirmity and was asking for prayer for his…for insomnia. Dear God, I just thank you so much for Chris and this this beautiful community that were all in, the DAB family. Father I pray that You will just touch Chris today Jesus and I pray that You will help them to sleep well at night. God Your word…Your word says that…that those who trust in You will be able to lay down and rest and sleep peacefully at night. I pray God that You will touch Chris in a mighty way, give him Your peace and may all things work together for…for his good and for Your glory God because I know that he loves You. Touch him and his family today in Jesus’ name. Amen. Love you DAB family. You guys are awesome. Thanks Brian and Jill for all you do. Have a great day.

Good morning everybody it’s Susan from Canada calling. I just heard on the daily prayer that Chrissy from Alabama wants us to pray for her friends in Texas whose daughter died in a car accident and second daughter is in ICU. They were hit by a drunk driver. And Lord God, Lord heavenly Father Jesus be with that family. Dear Lord, I know what suffering for Your children is like. And it’s not a good space to be in but we know that You are the Lord, that You are the King of kings and the Lord of lords. We know that You love us. We know that Your comfort will heal us. And I pray Lord over the family, the girl in ICU, __ a healing touch from You. And dear God I pray for the family whose grieving such a huge loss. Lord God just be with each and every one of them as they just have to climb out of this hole that they’re in. Lift them dear God. Lift them high with You where they can soar as eagles’ wings. Of Lord Jesus just be with them and this little girl in ICU dear God. I just don’t know why we have to go through these things but we trust in Your love for us in all things and in all ways. Bless all of us Your God as we travel through these difficult times. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

Hello this is Jackie from Decatur Texas I’m a new DAB listener. It was by the grace of God that I came up upon DAB and was curious about it and…well…now here I am about a month into listening. I love the community and what it offers. I’ve wanted to call in to request prayer, but I lacked the confidence in doing so until now. I was married for 24 years, now divorced for three years. The divorce was ugly, which tore and ripped many things. I currently live with my whole family due to the fact that I’ve recently discovered that I am codependent. I wondered why I felt this need to provide for my adult daughters, their families, my mom and my brother. Our home is an emotional mess right now with disagreement, discord, and dysfunction. I need prayer please. My heart is heavy with the many things the enemy has used against my family. He has attempted kill, steal and destroy. I cry out to Abba, how long oh Lord? I am worn and wary and lacking in my faith. I’m still grieving and hurting over such loss from the divorce. I have no hope and I covet your prayers. Thank you.

2 Samuel 4-6

Ish-bosheth Murdered

When Ish-bosheth, Saul's son, heard that Abner had died at Hebron, (A)his courage failed, and all Israel was dismayed. Now Saul's son had two men who were captains of raiding bands; the name of the one was Baanah, and the name of the other Rechab, sons of Rimmon a man of Benjamin from Beeroth ((B)for Beeroth also is counted part of Benjamin; (C)the Beerothites fled (D)to Gittaim and have been sojourners there to this day).

(E)Jonathan, the son of Saul, had a son who was crippled in his feet. He was five years old when the news about Saul and Jonathan (F)came from Jezreel, and his nurse took him up and fled, and as she fled in her haste, he fell and became lame. And his name was Mephibosheth.

Now the sons of Rimmon the Beerothite, Rechab and Baanah, set out, and about the heat of the day they came to the house of Ish-bosheth as he was taking his noonday rest. And they came into the midst of the house as if to get wheat, and they stabbed him (G)in the stomach. Then Rechab and Baanah his brother escaped.[a] When they came into the house, as he lay on his bed in his bedroom, they struck him and put him to death and beheaded him. They took his head and went by the way of (H)the Arabah all night, and brought the head of Ish-bosheth to David at Hebron. And they said to the king, “Here is the head of Ish-bosheth, the son of Saul, your enemy, (I)who sought your life. The Lord has avenged my lord the king this day on Saul and on his offspring.” But David answered Rechab and Baanah his brother, the sons of Rimmon the Beerothite, (J)“As the Lord lives, (K)who has redeemed my life out of every adversity, 10 (L)when one told me, ‘Behold, Saul is dead,’ and thought he was bringing good news, (M)I seized him and killed him at Ziklag, which was the reward I gave him for his news. 11 How much more, when wicked men have killed a righteous man in his own house on his bed, shall I not now (N)require his blood at your hand and destroy you from the earth?” 12 And David commanded his young men, and they killed them and cut off their hands and feet and hanged them beside the pool at Hebron. But they took the head of Ish-bosheth and buried it (O)in the tomb of Abner at Hebron.

David Anointed King of Israel

Then all the tribes of Israel (P)came to David at Hebron and said, “Behold, (Q)we are your bone and flesh. In times past, when Saul was king over us, (R)it was you who led out and brought in Israel. And the Lord said to you, (S)‘You shall be shepherd of my people Israel, and you shall be prince[b] over Israel.’” So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, (T)and King David made a covenant with them at Hebron (U)before the Lord, and they anointed David king over Israel. David was thirty years old when he began to reign, and (V)he reigned forty years. (W)At Hebron he reigned over Judah (X)seven years and six months, and at Jerusalem he reigned over all Israel and Judah thirty-three years.[c]

(Y)And the king and his men went to Jerusalem (Z)against the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land, who said to David, “You will not come in here, but the blind and the lame will ward you off”—thinking, “David cannot come in here.” Nevertheless, David took the stronghold of Zion, (AA)that is, the city of David. And David said on that day, “Whoever would strike the Jebusites, let him get up the water shaft to attack ‘the lame and the blind,’ who are hated by David's soul.” Therefore it is said, “The blind and the lame shall not come into the house.” And David lived in the stronghold and called it (AB)the city of David. And David built the city all around from the (AC)Millo inward. 10 And David became greater and greater, for the Lord, the God of hosts, was with him.

11 (AD)And (AE)Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David, and cedar trees, also carpenters and masons who built David a house. 12 And David knew that the Lord had established him king over Israel, and that he had exalted his kingdom for the sake of his people Israel.

13 And David took more (AF)concubines and wives from Jerusalem, after he came from Hebron, and more sons and daughters were born to David. 14 (AG)And these are the names of those who were born to him in Jerusalem: Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon, 15 Ibhar, Elishua, Nepheg, Japhia, 16 Elishama, Eliada, and Eliphelet.

David Defeats the Philistines

17 When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king over Israel, all the Philistines went up to search for David. But David heard of it and went down (AH)to the stronghold. 18 Now the Philistines had come and spread out in (AI)the Valley of Rephaim. 19 And David (AJ)inquired of the Lord, “Shall I go up against the Philistines? Will you give them into my hand?” And the Lord said to David, “Go up, for I will certainly give the Philistines into your hand.” 20 And David came to Baal-perazim, and David defeated them there. And he said, “The Lord has broken through my enemies before me like a breaking flood.” (AK)Therefore the name of that place is called Baal-perazim.[d] 21 And the Philistines left their idols there, and David and his men carried them away.

22 And the Philistines came up yet again (AL)and spread out in the Valley of Rephaim. 23 (AM)And when David inquired of the Lord, he said, “You shall not go up; go around to their rear, and come against them opposite the balsam trees. 24 And (AN)when you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the balsam trees, then rouse yourself, (AO)for then the Lord has gone out before you to strike down the army of the Philistines.” 25 And David did as the Lord commanded him, and struck down the Philistines from Geba (AP)to Gezer.

The Ark Brought to Jerusalem

(AQ)David again gathered all the chosen men of Israel, thirty thousand. And David arose and went with all the people who were with him from (AR)Baale-judah (AS)to bring up from there the ark of God, which is called by the name of the Lord of hosts (AT)who sits enthroned on the cherubim. And they carried the ark of God (AU)on a new cart and brought it (AV)out of the house of Abinadab, which was on the hill. And Uzzah and Ahio,[e] the sons of Abinadab, were driving the new cart, with the ark of God,[f] and Ahio went before the ark.

Uzzah and the Ark

And David and all the house of Israel were celebrating before the Lord, with (AW)songs[g] and lyres and harps and tambourines and castanets and cymbals. And when they came to the threshing floor of (AX)Nacon, Uzzah (AY)put out his hand to the ark of God and took hold of it, for the oxen stumbled. And the anger of the Lord was kindled against Uzzah, and (AZ)God struck him down there because of his error, and he died there beside the ark of God. And David was angry because the Lord had broken out against Uzzah. And that place is called Perez-uzzah[h] to this day. And David was afraid of the Lord that day, and he said, “How can the ark of the Lord come to me?” 10 So David was not willing to take the ark of the Lord into the city of David. But David took it aside (BA)to the house of Obed-edom the Gittite. 11 And the ark of the Lord remained in the house of Obed-edom the Gittite three months, (BB)and the Lord blessed Obed-edom and all his household.

12 And it was told King David, “The Lord has blessed the household of Obed-edom and all that belongs to him, because of the ark of God.” (BC)So David went and brought up the ark of God from the house of Obed-edom (BD)to the city of David with rejoicing. 13 And when (BE)those who bore the ark of the Lord had gone six steps, (BF)he sacrificed an ox and a fattened animal. 14 And David (BG)danced before the Lord with all his might. And David was (BH)wearing a linen ephod. 15 So David and all the house of Israel brought up the ark of the Lord with shouting and with the sound of the horn.

David and Michal

16 As the ark of the Lord came into the city of David, Michal the daughter of Saul looked out of the window and saw King David leaping and dancing before the Lord, and she despised him in her heart. 17 And they brought in the ark of the Lord and set it (BI)in its place, inside the tent that David had pitched for it. (BJ)And David offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the Lord. 18 And when David had finished offering the burnt offerings and the peace offerings, (BK)he blessed the people in the name of the Lord of hosts 19 and distributed among all the people, the whole multitude of Israel, both men and women, a cake of bread, a portion of meat,[i] and a cake of raisins to each one. (BL)Then all the people departed, each to his house.

20 And David returned to bless his household. But Michal the daughter of Saul came out to meet David and said, “How the king of Israel honored himself today, (BM)uncovering himself today before the eyes of his servants' female servants, as one of the (BN)vulgar fellows shamelessly uncovers himself!” 21 And David said to Michal, “It was before the Lord, (BO)who chose me above your father and above all his house, to appoint me as prince[j] over Israel, the people of the Lord—and I will celebrate before the Lord. 22 I will make myself yet more contemptible than this, and I will be abased in your[k] eyes. But by the female servants of whom you have spoken, by them I shall be held in honor.” 23 And Michal the daughter of Saul had no child to the day of her death.

John 13:31-14:14

A New Commandment

31 When he had gone out, Jesus said, (A)“Now is the Son of Man glorified, and (B)God is glorified in him. 32 If God is glorified in him, (C)God will also glorify him in himself, and (D)glorify him at once. 33 Little children, (E)yet a little while I am with you. You will seek me, and just (F)as I said to the Jews, so now I also say to you, ‘Where I am going you cannot come.’ 34 (G)A new commandment (H)I give to you, (I)that you love one another: (J)just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. 35 (K)By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

Jesus Foretells Peter's Denial

36 Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, where are you going?” (L)Jesus answered him, “Where I am going (M)you cannot follow me now, (N)but you will follow afterward.” 37 (O)Peter said to him, “Lord, why can I not follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.” 38 Jesus answered, “Will you lay down your life for me? Truly, truly, I say to you, (P)the rooster will not crow till you have denied me three times.

I Am the Way, and the Truth, and the Life

14 (Q)“Let not your hearts be troubled. (R)Believe in God;[a] believe also in me. In (S)my Father's house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that (T)I go to prepare a place for you?[b] And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you (U)to myself, that (V)where I am you may be also. And you know the way to where I am going.”[c] (W)Thomas said to him, “Lord, (X)we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am (Y)the way, and (Z)the truth, and (AA)the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. (AB)If you had known me, you would have (AC)known my Father also.[d] From now on you do know him and (AD)have seen him.”

(AE)Philip said to him, “Lord, (AF)show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? (AG)Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Do you not believe that (AH)I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you (AI)I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works. 11 Believe me that (AJ)I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else (AK)believe on account of the works themselves.

12 “Truly, truly, I say to you, (AL)whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I (AM)am going to the Father. 13 (AN)Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that (AO)the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 (AP)If you ask me[e] anything in my name, I will do it.

Psalm 119:17-32

Gimel

17 (A)Deal bountifully with your servant,
(B)that I may live and keep your word.
18 Open my eyes, that I may behold
wondrous things out of your law.
19 I am (C)a sojourner on the earth;
(D)hide not your commandments from me!
20 My soul is consumed with (E)longing
for your rules[a] at all times.
21 You rebuke (F)the insolent, (G)accursed ones,
who (H)wander from your commandments.
22 Take away from me (I)scorn and contempt,
(J)for I have kept your testimonies.
23 Even though (K)princes sit plotting against me,
your servant will (L)meditate on your statutes.
24 Your testimonies are my (M)delight;
they are my (N)counselors.

Daleth

25 (O)My soul clings to the dust;
(P)give me life (Q)according to your word!
26 When (R)I told of my ways, you answered me;
(S)teach me your statutes!
27 (T)Make me understand the way of your precepts,
and I will (U)meditate on your wondrous works.
28 (V)My soul melts away for sorrow;
strengthen me according to your word!
29 Put false ways far from me
and graciously (W)teach me your law!
30 I have chosen the way of faithfulness;
I (X)set your rules before me.
31 I cling to your testimonies, O Lord;
(Y)let me not be put to shame!
32 I will run in the way of your commandments
when you (Z)enlarge my heart![b]

Proverbs 15:31-32

31 (A)The ear that listens to (B)life-giving reproof

2 Samuel 2:12-3:39, John 13:1-30, Psalms 119:1-16, Proverbs 15:29-30

Today is the 23rd day of May welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I’m Brian it is wonderful to be here with you today as we move into the end…not move in…like this is the end of another week and…yeah…wow…look how far we are into May already. Let…let me not get sidetracked there. The next thing we’ll be talking about the weather and everything. So, let’s do what we’ve come to do. Let’s take the next step forward in the Scriptures this week. And we are moving into the book of second Samuel now, paying close attention to the life of David. Today second Samuel chapter 2 verse 12 through 3 verse 39.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word. And even as we end another week, we are grateful for all that we have learned and all that You have poured into us this week. And we thank You that as we end this week we…we end it at least in the gospel of John, Jesus, with…with You on Your knees washing the filthy feet of Your friends. And we see that scene and we hear Your words that…hat we are not greater than You our master and that if You are our master than this is the posture that we should have, one that washes the filth, releases the grime away from those who are near. And, so, as we as we move to the end of this week and prepare to begin a new week, we take that with us. We want to live into that in this coming week. And, so, we invite Your Holy Spirit into that. Come Jesus we pray. In Your mighty name we ask. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hi DAB family this is the Lord’s misfit in Texas. I’ve been listening now for three years and this is my first-time calling in. I wanted to first encourage anybody who may be a new listener out there. I just want to say to really stick with it and it really will do tremendous things in your life. When I first started listening I was really just curious to know exactly what was in the Bible and what it turned into for me was a journey where I worked on my relationship with God and have just seen great things happen in my life and am truly grateful to everybody at the DAB for this app and for all of everybody who calls and prays for each other. It’s just very encouraging. Second, I did want to ask for prayer for my older sister. She’s now entering her late 30s and I know that she’s frustrated that God has not yet sent her husband. I know she really wants a family of her own and she such a great person and we know it’ll happen for her, but I do hurt when she’s lonely and I hurt for all of those who are in the same spot, especially with everything going on and people staying home. So, I’d like to pray in Jesus’ mighty name for Him to comfort all of those who are single during this time and who are really hoping that God will bring them a spouse. Give them strength and give them patients and if it’s your will Lord, please send them somebody soon who they can love and work on their relationship of love through you and for all those and for my sister. Please join me in that prayer. I love you all. Thanks so much.

Hi, my name is Cynthia, I’m a first-time caller but I’ve been listening to the Daily Audio Bible for years. I’m just calling to ask you all to continue to pray with me for my son and his wife. He’s trying to do the right thing, but Lord sometimes it gets hard. They’re going through something right now. I ask that God, Lord Jesus please help both of them to get a closer relationship with You, to put You first in all that they do Father God. Lord just pray with me Daily Audio Bible to help them to get closer to You, to do what they know to do. You know, the Bible says You do what You know to do and help them to study so they can learn more and put their trust in You, Father, God. I also pray for my grandson. He’s going to college in California, he’s a junior but he’s gonna move out there and I just pray that God will wrap his arms around him God and keep him safe from all hurt, harm and danger. And please Lord help him to stay on the right path, to stay with God Lord. He’s definitely a Christian, a good Christian. Help him to stay that way no matter what happens but just protect him and keep him safe in Jesus’ name. I thank You all for praying with me. I pray for You each and every day. In Jesus’ name I pray.

Dear Running Desperately to Jesus this is Alina a Jesus worshiper here. You know, God was just reminding me about the grandmother that actually I can never forget. I have a special relationship from my really, really small age. My parents were leaving me at my grandparent’s house during the summertime for the school grade, which is in Ukraine for like three months. And this special, special relationship that I had with my grandmother and be…and watching her grow in Christ, 20 something years later made me saved. I lived with Christ I would say all my life but the way that I am right now of __ for two years is completely different when during all these years her prayers were holding me together. And I look at my life and I see Jesus now. I see Him in every moment and every prayer that I was praying for all these years He was hearing everything. And I know that it probably was really hard for my older grandmother to take care of me and sometimes she was sick and she was not feeling good but the love that she gave me, it was…my parents could never give me that kind of love. It only can come from a grandmother’s heart. And I pray today that God is going to give you so much love to this child, that you’re going to be able to take care of him or her, and you will have this special time, and you will both enjoy. And I pray that Jesus is gonna wrap His arms around you and you don’t have to run anymore and He’s just gonna be there for you all the time. I pray Lord for this lady in Jesus’ name Amen.

Lord I just want to pray for Reed. As a 13-year-old I felt similar and I just felt like I could die and nobody would care and I just want you to be with him and to let him know that even his darkest secrets are worth sharing and worth shining light on so that he can overcome them. Lord I just hope that You can find a creative outlet for him, whether it be writing or music. Lord just lift him up, let him see You in the tiny crevices of every day. In Your’ name I pray. Amen.

This is Sam Here I Am with thank you and a praise for Rebecca from Michigan who called in on the 17th May. Rebecca I just want to thank you for your words. They were very encouraging to me. And your words of having to learn to love myself, forgive myself, see myself as God sees me really spoke to me today and it was very timely. So, thank you for calling in and sharing that.

Hey, DABbers this is Slave of Jesus in North Carolina. Alright Holy Spirit let’s roll. So, I have a rule with my wife that I do not mention any female DABbbes out there, but I don’t think I’m violating this. We have a member of our family that has been diagnosed with COVID. So, it’s Marjorie. So, if we can get your prayers for a quick recovery from Marjorie but more importantly to know that she is solidly in You, in Jesus’ name. Amen. Duane, amen to your prayers for Will who recently lost his stepson. Amen to your prayers for Joshua. You know amen prayers…someone called in praying for the Koranists and that they would look for Jesus. I don’t know if you guys know this, the Koran, that brought me to Christ. I know that sounds crazy, but I was an atheist, very hard-core adamant argumentative hard-core atheist but I had to start studying the Koran for my job. My job in the military was to think like the enemy. I don’t think that Muslims are the enemy. We just happened to be fighting a lot of countries with guys who call themselves Muslims. I’ll take a pious Muslim over a hypocritical Christian every day of the week. But that all aside I started reading the Koran and there’s all these references to the Bible. And I’m like, “ugh…I guess I got a really read that stupid Bible so that I can understand when Mahammad’s ranting about the people of Lot. I know Lot’s in the Bible, but I don’t know what that means.” But so, Muslims believe that Jesus is the second most important prophet to walk the earth, like what he said came from God. They use Ala, but the one and only God. They believe in one God. And, so, you can talk to Muslims about Jesus. I know we’ve had 9/11 and that clouds our ability, but I say it’s easier to talk to a Muslim about Jesus than it is an atheist who doesn’t even believe in God. So, think about that and thank you for that person who said we should pray for the Koran. Love you all have a great day.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Saturday May 23, 2020 (NIV)

2 Samuel 2:12-3:39

12 Abner son of Ner and soldiers of Ish-bosheth son of Saul marched out from Mahanaim to Gibeon. 13 So Joab son of Zeruiah and David’s soldiers marched out and met them by the pool of Gibeon.(A) The two groups took up positions on opposite sides of the pool.

14 Then Abner said to Joab, “Let’s have the young men get up and compete in front of us.”

“Let them get up,” Joab replied.

15 So they got up and were counted off—twelve for Benjamin and Ish-bosheth son of Saul, and twelve from David’s soldiers. 16 Then each man grabbed his opponent by the head and thrust his sword into his opponent’s side so that they all died together. So this place, which is in Gibeon, is named Field of Blades.[a]

17 The battle that day was extremely fierce, and Abner and the men of Israel were defeated by David’s soldiers. 18 The three sons of Zeruiah were there: Joab, Abishai, and Asahel.(B) Asahel was a fast runner, like one of the wild gazelles.(C) 19 He chased Abner and did not turn to the right or the left in his pursuit of him. 20 Abner glanced back and said, “Is that you, Asahel?”

“Yes it is,” Asahel replied.

21 Abner said to him, “Turn to your right or left, seize one of the young soldiers, and take whatever you can get from him.” But Asahel would not stop chasing him. 22 Once again, Abner warned Asahel, “Stop chasing me. Why should I strike you to the ground? How could I ever look your brother Joab in the face?” (D)

23 But Asahel refused to turn away, so Abner hit him in the stomach with the butt of his spear. The spear went through his body, and he fell and died right there. As they all came to the place where Asahel had fallen and died, they stopped,(E) 24 but Joab and Abishai pursued Abner. By sunset, they had gone as far as the hill of Ammah, which is opposite Giah on the way to the wilderness of Gibeon.

25 The Benjaminites rallied to Abner; they formed a unit and took their stand on top of a hill. 26 Then Abner called out to Joab, “Must the sword devour forever? Don’t you realize this will only end in bitterness? How long before you tell the troops to stop pursuing their brothers?”

27 “As God lives,” Joab replied, “if you had not spoken up, the troops wouldn’t have stopped pursuing their brothers until morning.”(F) 28 Then Joab blew the ram’s horn, and all the troops stopped; they no longer pursued Israel or continued to fight. 29 So Abner and his men marched through the Arabah all that night. They crossed the Jordan, marched all morning,[b] and arrived at Mahanaim.(G)

30 When Joab had turned back from pursuing Abner, he gathered all the troops. In addition to Asahel, nineteen of David’s soldiers were missing, 31 but they had killed 360 of the Benjaminites and Abner’s men. 32 Afterward, they carried Asahel to his father’s tomb in Bethlehem and buried him. Then Joab and his men marched all night and reached Hebron at dawn.

Civil War

During the long war between the house of Saul and the house of David,(H) David was growing stronger(I) and the house of Saul was becoming weaker.

Sons were born to David in Hebron:

His firstborn was Amnon,(J)

by Ahinoam(K) the Jezreelite;

his second was Chileab,

by Abigail,(L) the widow of Nabal the Carmelite;

the third was Absalom,(M)

son of Maacah the daughter of King Talmai of Geshur;(N)

the fourth was Adonijah,(O)

son of Haggith;

the fifth was Shephatiah,

son of Abital;

the sixth was Ithream,

by David’s wife Eglah.

These were born to David in Hebron.(P)

During the war between the house of Saul and the house of David, Abner kept acquiring more power in the house of Saul.(Q) Now Saul had a concubine whose name was Rizpah(R) daughter of Aiah, and Ish-bosheth questioned Abner, “Why did you sleep with my father’s concubine?”

Abner was very angry about Ish-bosheth’s accusation. “Am I a dog’s head[c](S) who belongs to Judah?” he asked. “All this time I’ve been loyal to the family of your father Saul, to his brothers, and to his friends and haven’t betrayed you to David, but now you accuse me of wrongdoing with this woman! May God punish Abner and do so severely if I don’t do for David what the Lord swore to him: 10 to transfer the kingdom from the house of Saul and establish the throne of David over Israel and Judah(T) from Dan to Beer-sheba.” 11 Ish-bosheth did not dare respond to Abner because he was afraid of him.

12 Abner sent messengers as his representatives to say to David, “Whose land is it? Make your covenant with me, and you can be certain I am on your side to turn all Israel over to you.”

13 David replied, “Good, I will make a covenant with you. However, there’s one thing I require of you: You will not see my face unless you first bring Saul’s daughter Michal(U) when you come to see me.”

14 Then David sent messengers to say to Ish-bosheth son of Saul, “Give me back my wife Michal. I was engaged to her for the price of a hundred Philistine foreskins.”(V)

15 So Ish-bosheth sent someone to take her away from her husband, Paltiel son of Laish.(W) 16 Her husband followed her, weeping all the way to Bahurim. Abner said to him, “Go back.” So he went back.

The Assassination of Abner

17 Abner conferred with the elders of Israel: “In the past you wanted David to be king over you. 18 Now take action, because the Lord has spoken concerning David: ‘Through my servant David I will save my people Israel from the power of the Philistines and the power of all Israel’s enemies.’”

19 Abner also informed the Benjaminites and went to Hebron to inform David about all that was agreed on by Israel and the whole house of Benjamin.(X) 20 When Abner and twenty men came to David at Hebron, David held a banquet for him and his men.

21 Abner said to David, “Let me now go and I will gather all Israel to my lord the king. They will make a covenant with you,(Y) and you will reign over all you desire.” So David dismissed Abner, and he went in peace.

22 Just then David’s soldiers and Joab returned from a raid and brought a large amount of plundered goods with them. Abner was not with David in Hebron because David had dismissed him, and he had gone in peace. 23 When Joab and his whole army arrived, Joab was informed, “Abner son of Ner came to see the king, the king dismissed him, and he went in peace.”

24 Joab went to the king and said, “What have you done? Look here, Abner came to you. Why did you dismiss him? Now he’s getting away. 25 You know that Abner son of Ner came to deceive you and to find out about your military activities[d] and everything you’re doing.” 26 Then Joab left David and sent messengers after Abner. They brought him back from the well[e] of Sirah, but David was unaware of it. 27 When Abner returned to Hebron, Joab pulled him aside to the middle of the city gate, as if to speak to him privately, and there Joab stabbed him in the stomach. So Abner died in revenge for the death of Asahel,[f] Joab’s brother.(Z)

28 David heard about it later and said, “I and my kingdom are forever innocent before the Lord concerning the blood of Abner son of Ner. 29 May it hang over Joab’s head and his father’s whole family, and may the house of Joab never be without someone who has a discharge or a skin disease,(AA) or a man who can only work a spindle,[g] or someone who falls by the sword or starves.” 30 Joab and his brother Abishai killed Abner because he had put their brother Asahel to death in the battle at Gibeon.(AB)

31 David then ordered Joab and all the people who were with him, “Tear your clothes, put on sackcloth,(AC) and mourn over Abner.” And King David walked behind the coffin.[h]

32 When they buried Abner in Hebron, the king wept aloud at Abner’s tomb. All the people wept, 33 and the king sang a lament for Abner:(AD)

Should Abner die as a fool dies?
34 Your hands were not bound,
your feet not placed in bronze shackles.
You fell like one who falls victim to criminals.

And all the people wept over him even more.

35 Then they came to urge David to eat food while it was still day, but David took an oath: “May God punish me and do so severely if I taste bread or anything else before sunset!” (AE) 36 All the people took note of this, and it pleased them. In fact, everything the king did pleased them. 37 On that day all the troops and all Israel were convinced that the king had no part in the killing of Abner son of Ner.

38 Then the king said to his soldiers, “You must know that a great leader has fallen in Israel today. 39 As for me, even though I am the anointed king, I have little power today. These men, the sons of Zeruiah, are too fierce for me.(AF) May the Lord repay the evildoer according to his evil!” (AG)

John 13:1-30

Jesus Washes His Disciples’ Feet

13 Before the Passover Festival, Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart from this world to the Father.(A) Having loved his own who were in the world,(B) he loved them to the end.

Now when it was time for supper, the devil(C) had already put it into the heart of Judas,(D) Simon Iscariot’s son,[a] to betray(E) him. Jesus knew that the Father had given everything into his hands,(F) that he had come from God,(G) and that he was going back to God.(H) So he got up from supper, laid aside his outer clothing,(I) took a towel, and tied it around himself.(J) Next, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet and to dry them with the towel tied around him.

He came to Simon Peter,(K) who asked him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?”

Jesus answered him, “What I’m doing you don’t realize now, but afterward you will understand.”(L)

“You will never wash my feet,” Peter said.

Jesus replied, “If I don’t wash you, you have no part with me.”

Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, not only my feet, but also my hands and my head.”

10 “One who has bathed,” Jesus told him, “doesn’t need to wash anything except his feet, but he is completely clean. You are clean, but not all of you.” 11 For he knew who would betray him. This is why he said, “Not all of you are clean.”

The Meaning of Foot Washing

12 When Jesus had washed their feet and put on his outer clothing, he reclined again and said to them, “Do you know what I have done for you? 13 You call me Teacher and Lord—and you are speaking rightly, since that is what I am. 14 So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet.(M) 15 For I have given you an example,(N) that you also should do just as I have done for you.

16 “Truly I tell you, a servant is not greater than his master,[b](O) and a messenger is not greater than the one who sent him. 17 If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them.(P)

18 “I’m not speaking about all of you; I know those I have chosen.(Q) But the Scripture(R) must be fulfilled: (S) The one who eats my bread[c] has raised his heel against me.[d](T) 19 I am telling you now before it happens,(U) so that when it does happen you will believe(V) that I am he.(W) 20 Truly I tell you, whoever receives anyone I send receives me, and the one who receives(X) me receives him who sent me.”

Judas’s Betrayal Predicted

21 When(Y) Jesus had said this, he was troubled in his spirit(Z) and testified,(AA) “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me.”

22 The disciples started looking at one another—uncertain which one he was speaking about. 23 One of his disciples, the one Jesus loved,(AB) was reclining close beside Jesus.[e] 24 Simon Peter motioned to him to find out who it was he was talking about. 25 So he leaned back against Jesus and asked him, “Lord, who is it?”

26 Jesus replied, “He’s the one I give the piece of bread to after I have dipped it.”(AC) When he had dipped the bread,(AD) he gave it to Judas, Simon Iscariot’s son.[f] 27 After Judas ate the piece of bread, Satan(AE) entered him. So Jesus told him, “What you’re doing, do quickly.”

28 None of those reclining at the table knew why he said this to him. 29 Since Judas(AF) kept the money-bag, some thought that Jesus was telling him, “Buy what we need for the festival,”(AG) or that he should give something to the poor. 30 After receiving the piece of bread, he immediately left. And it was night.(AH)

2 Samuel 1:1-2:11, John 12:20-50, Psalms 118:19-29, Proverbs 15:27-28

Today is the 22nd day of May, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I am Brian it is wonderful to be here with you today and it’s wonderful to be with you any day. I’m glad that we can have this time together any of the days because we…because this is an everyday thing. So, it’s good to be here with you today. It’s a little bit of a special day, we’re going to begin a new book today, which like if you’ve been kind of tracking along with the books in the Old Testament you can be like, “wait a minute. All this drama that’s going on. How could that be the end of first Samuel?”

Introduction to second Samuel:

Well, we have reached the beginning of second Samuel, which, as we talked about when we began first Samuel. Like first Samuel, second Samuel, first Kings, second Kings, these were all grouped together as one writing. They’d been broken apart over time. Like there was a time that there was first Kings second Kings third Kings and forth Kings and that gets a little bit tedious and confusing because first and second Samuel were at one point first and second Kings. But that’s all shifted, and we have the common understanding now - first and second Samuel, first and second Kings. And this is the territory that we’re heading into. So, today, we’re heading into second Samuel, and that’s why…I mean…we’re just picking up where we left off. There’s just a delineation that has been made over time and that delineation that is made between first and second Samuel is that first Samuel deals primarily with King Saul. Even though David is much a part of that story in yesterday’s reading King Saul died in battle with the Philistines. Now we’re starting second Samuel. This is everything that happens after that, which now begins to focus on David’s life and how it is that this shepherd boy from the wrong tribe from the wrong place could ascend to the throne of Israel. We’re reading from the Christian Standard Bible this week. Second Samuel chapter 1 verse 1 through 2 verse 11.

Commentary:

Okay. So, we kinda recapped the…the fact that we are going into second Samuel and how kinda first and second Samuel, first and second Kings, how these are woven together and how second Samuel kind of begins to put David centerstage because Saul died in battle in the last chapter of first Samuel. So, in today’s reading as we begin second Samuel, David…David finds out…like he finds out that Saul and his beloved friend Jonathan, they’re dead and we see the way that he reacts and it’s really actually important that we see the way that he reacts now because we need to watch David’s posture going forward. So, David found out that the king of Israel, the very man who on numerous occasions tried to assassinate him and had hunted him down was dead and instead of jumping up and down rejoicing and throwing…you know…slaying the fattened calf and having this big celebration, David goes into mourning, tears his clothes and goes into morning and so do all of his men. They follow suit. They follow their leader. They follow David into mourning. And we remember that David had a number of opportunities actually to take his vengeance upon Saul. So, like even as Saul’s trying to kill David Saul fell into David’s hands on a couple of occasions and he could’ve killed him, he could’ve killed Saul. He wouldn’t touch God’s anointed. And so when an Amalekite shows up at Ziklag having come down from the battle and claims to be the one to put Saul out of his misery, as it were, that just does not sit well with David. And, so, this person, and as it was reported in first Samuel the story happened differently. So, all we can deduces that this Amalekite that came down to David with the crown and all that didn’t actually kill Saul, but confessed that he did and was bringing David, you know, the jewels and the crown and stuff, that Matt didn’t survive because he had the audacity to touch God’s anointed, something David wouldn’t do even though that very person was trying to kill him. So, what we see here is maybe a different kind of reaction then we would suspect. We would think this would be a great relief. And probably it was for David, at least in terms of being on the run, but his reverence for God’s anointed, the king, like his reverence for this office, for this position, and the way that this is supposed to work is intact. People are seeing this, right? Like, so if David and his men, they had thrown a great celebration, that would’ve spread, that news would’ve spread, but instead David goes into mourning and that’s what begins to get around. And pretty unfortunate for the guy to be an Amalekite that brings the crown, right? Because it was the Amalekites who raided Ziklag that they had to chase down. So, yeah, all around a bad day for that guy. So, David mourns and then he asks of God, “what do I do?” God sends him to Hebron where David is then anointed the king over the tribe of Judah. So, he is not the king of Israel, he’s been installed as the king over one of the tribes. Abner the commander of the Army takes Ishbosheth, which is Saul’s nearest remaining son, heir to the throne and installs him as the king of the rest of Israel. And as we learn from second Samuel today that went on for a couple of years. So, David didn’t just find out Saul was dead, you know, like, ride into town and go I’m the king. That’s not how it happened. This takes time. And actually, the ways that it begins to move in David’s favor has a lot to do with David’s posture, which we began to see today, and let’s keep watching that in the days ahead.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word. And we think for this story, this story of the Kings coming to Israel after this long drought of Judges. Meeting Samuel, meeting Saul, meeting David, there’s so much about our own lives embedded into the stories that we can see. And, so, we ask Holy Spirit that You help us see ourselves in these stories, just figure out who we would be in these stories because we get to see the…where the roads lead. And that is so helpful because You are giving us advance knowledge of where a pathway in life will lead us and we’re thankful for that. So, come Holy Spirit and plant the words that we read into our hearts and into our lives and may we be fertile soil for a bountiful harvest of the fruit of the Spirit in our lives we pray. In the name of Jesus, we ask. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

My name is Mike from Redding California been a DAB listener for a couple years now first-time prayer request. My son Ben, he’s 14, ran away a few days ago. His mother and I have filed a police report and we’re just worried about our boy. We want him to come home safe. So, if you could please lift him up in prayer, we sure would appreciate it. Thank you.

Good morning this message is for Walta. Walta, I absolutely love hearing you call in and yesterday as I was working and listening to the Daily Audio Bible, I heard your call on the community prayer requests asking for prayer for your son who is experiencing some of these coronavirus symptoms. And I was praying along with you for that and was just…I just was so heartbroken when you mentioned that you were concerned about having to have someone go and make a well check because of the fact that he is a black young man and it breaks my heart. And, so, I just wanted to call…call today and just read this Scripture from Revelation. After this I looked and behold a great multitude that no one could number from every nation from all tribes and peoples and languages standing before the throne and before the Lamb clothed in white robes with palm branches in their hands and crying out with a loud voice, “salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne and to the Lamb.” And I just want to say that I don’t know how we got to be in such a crazy broken place, but I look forward to the day when we will all stand together at the throne of God. I love you sister and am so sorry that you have to live with this. I have three boys and I just…I just can’t comprehend, but I just want you to know that I have…I hear you and…

Hello DAB family this is Byron out in Florida I wanted to pray for Reed in California’s son. I’m sorry, Ken in California’s son, Reed. Heavenly Father, we come before you for this father and for his son for this young man. I don’t really know what to say, but I know the heart of a father. He sees the pain inside of a young man but cannot reach it. He sees the struggle and is there to help to serve and to lift up and is being pushed away. So, Lord You know that feeling because You get it from us all the time, but You also know us and Reed better than anyone else in existence. You know how to reach his heart. Heal the heart of this aching father and reach into Reed’s heart and soften it and open up the door so that all that’s love that’s around read can rush in and overpower the bitterness, the anger. We come against any demonic forces. We come against any human being Lord that’s oppressing read. We break those things in the name of Jesus. We claim his heart. We give You all praise, all honor and all glory because You’ll never with the children of the righteous be forsaken and we are righteous by Your grace in Jesus name we pray. Amen.

Daily Audio Bible family it’s amazing to…to hear your prayers every day. And I was just this morning in awe about how you can care so much for people around the world. And this is Andrea from Momsburry just outside of Cape Town in South Africa. And my heart goes out to in the states, thank you Brian for everything that you do at Daily Audio Bible. You really bring the word of God to life for us and it so special in this time and we…we’re pretty much at the start of this pandemic on our side and we are still…we are feeling it on our side but our hearts go out to you guys in the states and all across the world where it’s touching your families and loved ones very closely. Know that we are praying for you and we just spend…send love to you. All right. Bye.

Hi, my name is Betty and I wanted to call and give a long overdue praise report. I called back in the fall in October for my son Nathan who, at the time, was going through some sort of a break…breakdown and through the next time period he had three hospitalizations and…and that the last hospitalization was a 98 day stay in the hospital, but praise God. Nate did come home at the end of March into our new COVID world and thankfully he is continuing to improve, and God is showing his faithfulness to us and our family. He’s restoring his life to him day by day and it’s just been a beautiful thing to watch. So, thank you so much to my Daily Audio Bible family and praise be to God for answered prayer. Be encouraged people, God does answer our prayers.

Good morning my sweet family it’s Susan from Canada calling. I just listened to our friend from Oklahoma who prays for our children every day and is Just so wonderful. She quoted one of my favorite verses Isaiah 33:2 about how God is always with us whether we’re walking through raging waters or fiery flames. And I want to encourage you people. It is so true. I have hit bottom so many times in my life. My friends are calling me Job and my sister even said, “who knew rock-bottom had a basement,” which we kind of chuckle over now. Right now, I’m struggling with my son with stage IV cancer, which is sort of my current rock-bottom. But I want you all to know that there is God with you always. He will never leave nor forsake you. He walks you through, He sees your pain. He is with you always and every time you need a…a…a…a hand He’s there for you to carry you through, be your strength, be your wisdom. Reach out to Him and He will bless you in Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

2 Samuel 1:1-2:11

Responses to Saul’s Death

After the death of Saul,(A) David returned from defeating the Amalekites(B) and stayed at Ziklag two days. On the third day a man with torn clothes and dust on his head(C) came from Saul’s camp. When he came to David, he fell to the ground and paid homage. David asked him, “Where have you come from?”

He replied to him, “I’ve escaped from the Israelite camp.”

“What was the outcome? Tell me,” David asked him.

“The troops fled from the battle,” he answered. “Many of the troops have fallen and are dead. Also, Saul and his son Jonathan are dead.”(D)

David asked the young man who had brought him the report, “How do you know Saul and his son Jonathan are dead?”

“I happened to be on Mount Gilboa,”(E) he replied, “and there was Saul, leaning on his spear. At that very moment the chariots and the cavalry were closing in on him. When he turned around and saw me, he called out to me, so I answered: I’m at your service. He asked me, ‘Who are you?’ I told him: I’m an Amalekite.(F) Then he begged me, ‘Stand over me and kill me, for I’m mortally wounded,[a] but my life still lingers.’(G) 10 So I stood over him and killed him because I knew that after he had fallen he couldn’t survive. I took the crown that was on his head and the armband that was on his arm, and I’ve brought them here to my lord.”

11 Then David took hold of his clothes and tore them,(H) and all the men with him did the same. 12 They mourned, wept, and fasted until the evening(I) for those who died by the sword—for Saul, his son Jonathan, the Lord’s people, and the house of Israel.

13 David inquired of the young man who had brought him the report, “Where are you from?”

“I’m the son of a resident alien,” he said. “I’m an Amalekite.”

14 David questioned him, “How is it that you were not afraid to lift your hand to destroy the Lord’s anointed?” (J) 15 Then David summoned one of his servants and said, “Come here and kill him!” The servant struck him, and he died.(K) 16 For David had said to the Amalekite, “Your blood is on your own head(L) because your own mouth testified against you by saying, ‘I killed the Lord’s anointed.’”

17 David sang the following lament(M) for Saul and his son Jonathan, 18 and he ordered that the Judahites be taught The Song of the Bow. It is written in the Book of Jashar:[b](N)

19 The splendor of Israel lies slain on your heights.
How the mighty have fallen!
20 Do not tell it in Gath,
don’t announce it in the marketplaces of Ashkelon,
or the daughters of the Philistines will rejoice,(O)
and the daughters of the uncircumcised will celebrate.
21 Mountains of Gilboa,
let no dew or rain be on you,
or fields of offerings,[c]
for there the shield of the mighty was defiled(P)
the shield of Saul, no longer anointed with oil.(Q)
22 Jonathan’s bow never retreated,
Saul’s sword never returned unstained,[d]
from the blood of the slain,
from the flesh[e] of the mighty.
23 Saul and Jonathan,
loved and delightful,
they were not parted in life or in death.
They were swifter than eagles, stronger than lions.
24 Daughters of Israel, weep for Saul,
who clothed you in scarlet, with luxurious things,
who decked your garments with gold ornaments.(R)
25 How the mighty have fallen in the thick of battle!
Jonathan lies slain on your heights.
26 I grieve for you, Jonathan, my brother.
You were such a friend to me.
Your love for me was more wondrous
than the love of women.(S)
27 How the mighty have fallen
and the weapons of war have perished!

David, King of Judah

Some time later, David inquired of the Lord:(T) “Should I go to one of the towns of Judah?”

The Lord answered him, “Go.”

Then David asked, “Where should I go?”

“To Hebron,”(U) the Lord replied.

So David went there with his two wives, Ahinoam the Jezreelite and Abigail, the widow of Nabal the Carmelite.(V) In addition, David brought the men who were with him, each one with his family, and they settled in the towns near Hebron.(W) Then the men of Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah.(X) They told David, “It was the men of Jabesh-gilead who buried Saul.”(Y)

David sent messengers to the men of Jabesh-gilead and said to them, “The Lord bless you because you have shown this kindness to Saul your lord when you buried him. Now, may the Lord show kindness and faithfulness to you, and I will also show the same goodness to you because you have done this deed. Therefore, be strong[f] and valiant, for though Saul your lord is dead, the house of Judah has anointed me king over them.”

Abner son of Ner, commander of Saul’s army,(Z) took Saul’s son Ish-bosheth[g][h] and moved him to Mahanaim. He made him king over Gilead, Asher, Jezreel, Ephraim, Benjamin—over all Israel. 10 Saul’s son Ish-bosheth was forty years old when he became king over Israel; he reigned for two years. The house of Judah, however, followed David. 11 The length of time that David was king in Hebron over the house of Judah was seven years and six months.(AA)

John 12:20-50

Jesus Predicts His Crucifixion

20 Now some Greeks were among those who went up to worship at the festival. 21 So they came to Philip,(A) who was from Bethsaida(B) in Galilee,(C) and requested of him, “Sir,(D) we want to see Jesus.” 22 Philip went and told Andrew;(E) then Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus.

23 Jesus replied to them, “The hour has come for the Son of Man(F) to be glorified. 24 Truly I tell you, unless a grain of wheat(G) falls to the ground and dies, it remains by itself. But if it dies, it produces much fruit.(H) 25 The one who loves his life will lose it,(I) and the one who hates(J) his life(K) in this world will keep it for eternal life. 26 If anyone serves me, he must follow me. Where I am, there my servant(L) also will be.(M) If anyone serves me, the Father will honor(N) him.

27 “Now my soul is troubled. What should I say—Father, save me(O) from this hour? But that is why I came to this hour. 28 Father, glorify your name.”[a](P)

Then a voice(Q) came from heaven: (R) “I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.”(S)

29 The crowd standing there heard it and said it was thunder. Others said, “An angel has spoken to him.”

30 Jesus responded, “This voice came, not for me, but for you.(T) 31 Now is the judgment of this world.(U) Now the ruler of this world(V) will be cast out.(W) 32 As for me, if I am lifted up[b] from the earth I will draw all people to myself.”(X) 33 He said this to indicate what kind of death he was about to die.(Y)

34 Then the crowd replied to him, “We have heard from the law that the Messiah will remain forever.(Z) So how can you say, ‘The Son of Man(AA) must be lifted up’? Who is this Son of Man?”

35 Jesus answered, “The light will be with you only a little longer.(AB) Walk while you have the light(AC) so that darkness doesn’t overtake you.(AD) The one who walks in darkness doesn’t know where he’s going.(AE) 36 While you have the light,(AF) believe in the light so that you may become children of light.” Jesus said this, then went away and hid from them.(AG)

Isaiah’s Prophecies Fulfilled

37 Even though he had performed so many signs in their presence, they did not believe in him. 38 This was to fulfill(AH) the word of Isaiah(AI) the prophet, who said:[c]

Lord, who has believed our message?
And to whom has the arm(AJ) of the Lord been revealed?[d](AK)

39 This is why they were unable to believe, because Isaiah also said:

40 He has blinded(AL) their eyes
and hardened their hearts,(AM)
so that they would not see with their eyes
or understand with their hearts,
and turn,(AN)
and I would heal them.[e](AO)

41 Isaiah said these things because[f] he saw his glory(AP) and spoke about him.

42 Nevertheless, many did believe in him even among the rulers,(AQ) but because of the Pharisees they did not confess him, so that they would not be banned from the synagogue. 43 For they loved human praise(AR) more than praise from God.(AS)

A Summary of Jesus’s Mission

44 Jesus cried out, “The one who believes in me(AT) believes not in me, but in him who sent me. 45 And the one who sees me sees him(AU) who sent me. 46 I have come as light into the world, so that everyone who believes in me would not remain in darkness. 47 If anyone hears my words and doesn’t keep(AV) them, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world(AW) but to save the world.(AX) 48 The one who rejects me(AY) and doesn’t receive my sayings has this as his judge: [g] The word I have spoken will judge him on the last day.(AZ) 49 For I have not spoken on my own, but the Father(BA) himself who sent me has given me a command to say everything I have said. 50 I know that his command is eternal life.(BB) So the things that I speak, I speak just as the Father has told me.”(BC)
