Deuteronomy 29-30

Renewing the Covenant

29 These are the words of the covenant(A) the Lord commanded Moses to make with the Israelites in the land of Moab, in addition to the covenant he had made with them at Horeb.(B) Moses summoned all Israel and said to them, “You have seen with your own eyes(C) everything the Lord did in Egypt to Pharaoh, to all his officials, and to his entire land. You saw with your own eyes the great trials and those great signs and wonders.(D) Yet to this day the Lord has not given you a mind to understand, eyes to see, or ears to hear.(E) I led you forty years in the wilderness; your clothes and the sandals on your feet did not wear out;(F) you did not eat food or drink wine or beer—so that you might know that I am the Lord your God.(G) When you reached this place, King Sihon of Heshbon and King Og of Bashan came out against us in battle, but we defeated them.(H) We took their land and gave it as an inheritance to the Reubenites, the Gadites, and half the tribe of Manasseh.(I) Therefore, observe the words of this covenant(J) and follow them, so that you will succeed in everything you do.(K)

10 “All of you are standing today before the Lord your God—your leaders, tribes, elders, officials, all the men of Israel, 11 your dependents, your wives, and the resident aliens in your camps who cut your wood and draw your water— 12 so that you may enter into the covenant of the Lord your God, which he is making with you today, so that you may enter into his oath 13 and so that he may establish you today as his people and he may be your God as he promised you and as he swore to your fathers Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.(L) 14 I am making this covenant and this oath not only with you, 15 but also with those who are standing here with us today in the presence of the Lord our God and with those who are not here today.

Abandoning the Covenant

16 “Indeed, you know how we lived in the land of Egypt and passed through the nations where you traveled. 17 You saw their abhorrent images and idols made of wood, stone, silver, and gold, which were among them.(M) 18 Be sure there is no man, woman, clan, or tribe among you today whose heart turns away from the Lord our God to go and worship the gods of those nations. Be sure there is no root among you bearing poisonous and bitter fruit.(N) 19 When someone hears the words of this oath, he may consider himself exempt,[a] thinking, ‘I will have peace even though I follow my own stubborn heart.’ This will lead to the destruction of the well-watered land as well as the dry land. 20 The Lord will not be willing to forgive him. Instead, his anger and jealousy will burn against that person, and every curse written in this scroll will descend on him. The Lord will blot out his name under heaven,(O) 21 and single him out for harm from all the tribes of Israel, according to all the curses of the covenant written in this book of the law.

22 “Future generations of your children who follow you and the foreigner who comes from a distant country will see the plagues of that land and the sicknesses the Lord has inflicted on it. 23 All its soil will be a burning waste of sulfur and salt, unsown, producing nothing, with no plant growing on it, just like the fall of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, which the Lord demolished in his fierce anger.(P) 24 All the nations will ask, ‘Why has the Lord done this to this land? Why this intense outburst of anger?’ 25 Then people will answer, ‘It is because they abandoned the covenant of the Lord, the God of their fathers, which he had made with them when he brought them out of the land of Egypt. 26 They began to serve other gods, bowing in worship to gods they had not known(Q)—gods that the Lord had not permitted them to worship.(R) 27 Therefore the Lord’s anger burned against this land, and he brought every curse written in this book on it. 28 The Lord uprooted them from their land in his anger, rage, and intense wrath, and threw them into another land where they are today.’ 29 The hidden things belong to the Lord our God, but the revealed things belong to us and our children forever, so that we may follow all the words of this law.

Returning to the Lord

30 “When all these things happen to you—the blessings and curses I have set before you—and you come to your senses while you are in all the nations where the Lord your God has driven you,(S) and you and your children return to the Lord your God and obey him with all your heart and all your soul(T) by doing[b] everything I am commanding you today, then he will restore your fortunes,[c](U) have compassion on you, and gather you again from all the peoples where the Lord your God has scattered you.(V) Even if your exiles are at the farthest horizon,[d] he will gather you and bring you back from there.(W) The Lord your God will bring you into the land your fathers possessed, and you will take possession of it.(X) He will cause you to prosper and multiply you more than he did your fathers.(Y) The Lord your God will circumcise your heart(Z) and the hearts of your descendants, and you will love him with all your heart and all your soul so that you will live.(AA) The Lord your God will put all these curses on your enemies who hate and persecute you. Then you will again obey him and follow all his commands I am commanding you today. The Lord your God will make you prosper abundantly in all the work of your hands,(AB) your offspring,[e] the offspring of your livestock, and the produce of your land. Indeed, the Lord will again delight in your prosperity, as he delighted in that of your fathers, 10 when you obey the Lord your God by keeping his commands and statutes that are written in this book of the law and return to him with all your heart and all your soul.

Choose Life

11 “This command that I give you today is certainly not too difficult or beyond your reach. 12 It is not in heaven so that you have to ask, ‘Who will go up to heaven, get it for us, and proclaim it to us so that we may follow it?’ 13 And it is not across the sea so that you have to ask, ‘Who will cross the sea, get it for us, and proclaim it to us so that we may follow it?’ 14 But the message is very near you, in your mouth and in your heart, so that you may follow it.(AC) 15 See, today I have set before you life and prosperity, death and adversity.(AD) 16 For[f] I am commanding you today to love the Lord your God, to walk in his ways, and to keep his commands, statutes, and ordinances, so that you may live[g] and multiply, and the Lord your God may bless you in the land you are entering to possess. 17 But if your heart turns away and you do not listen and you are led astray to bow in worship to other gods and serve them, 18 I tell you today that you will certainly perish and will not prolong your days in the land you are entering to possess across the Jordan. 19 I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you today that I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Choose life(AE) so that you and your descendants may live, 20 love the Lord your God, obey him, and remain faithful[h] to him. For he is your life, and he will prolong your days as you live in the land the Lord swore to give to your fathers(AF) Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.”

Luke 11:37-12:7

Religious Hypocrisy Denounced

37 As he was speaking, a Pharisee(A) asked him to dine with him. So he went in and reclined at the table. 38 When the Pharisee saw this, he was amazed that he did not first perform the ritual washing[a](B) before dinner.(C) 39 But the Lord said to him, “Now you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside you are full of greed(D) and evil.(E) 40 Fools!(F) Didn’t he who made the outside make the inside too? 41 But give from what is within to the poor,[b](G) and then everything is clean(H) for you.

42 “But woe(I) to you Pharisees! You give a tenth[c](J) of mint, rue, and every kind of herb, and you bypass[d] justice(K) and love for God.[e](L) These things you should have done without neglecting the others.

43 “Woe to you Pharisees! You love the front seat(M) in the synagogues(N) and greetings in the marketplaces.

44 “Woe to you![f] You are like unmarked graves; (O) the people who walk over them don’t know it.”

45 One of the experts in the law(P) answered him, “Teacher, when you say these things you insult us too.”

46 Then he said: “Woe also to you experts in the law! You load people with burdens(Q) that are hard to carry, and yet you yourselves don’t touch these burdens with one of your fingers.(R)

47 “Woe to you! You build tombs[g] for the prophets,(S) and your fathers killed(T) them. 48 Therefore, you are witnesses(U) that you approve[h](V) the deeds of your fathers, for they killed them, and you build their monuments.[i] 49 Because of this, the wisdom of God(W) said, ‘I will send them prophets and apostles,(X) and some of them they will kill and persecute,’(Y) 50 so that this generation(Z) may be held responsible for the blood of all the prophets shed since the foundation of the world[j](AA) 51 from the blood of Abel(AB) to the blood of Zechariah,(AC) who perished between the altar and the sanctuary.

“Yes, I tell you, this generation will be held responsible.[k]

52 “Woe to you experts in the law! You have taken away the key to knowledge.(AD) You didn’t go in yourselves, and you hindered(AE) those who were trying to go in.”

53 When he left there,[l] the scribes and the Pharisees began to oppose(AF) him fiercely and to cross-examine him about many things; 54 they were lying in wait(AG) for him to trap him in something he said.[m](AH)

Beware of Religious Hypocrisy

12 Meanwhile, a crowd of many thousands came together, so that they were trampling(AI) on one another. He began to say to his disciples first,(AJ) “Be on your guard(AK) against the leaven[n](AL) of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.(AM) There is nothing covered that won’t be uncovered,(AN) nothing hidden that won’t be made known.(AO) Therefore, whatever you have said in the dark will be heard in the light, and what you have whispered in an ear in private rooms(AP) will be proclaimed on the housetops.(AQ)

Fear God

“I say to you, my friends,(AR) don’t fear(AS) those who kill the body, and after that can do nothing more. But I will show you the one to fear: Fear(AT) him who has authority to throw people into hell(AU) after death. Yes, I say to you, this is the one to fear! Aren’t five sparrows sold for two pennies?[o] Yet not one of them is forgotten in God’s sight.(AV) Indeed, the hairs of your head are all counted. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.

Psalm 78:1-31

Psalm 78

Lessons from Israel’s Past

A Maskil of Asaph.(A)

My people, hear my instruction;
listen to the words from my mouth.(B)
I will declare wise sayings;
I will speak mysteries from the past(C)
things we have heard and known
and that our fathers have passed down to us.(D)
We will not hide them from their children,
but will tell a future generation
the praiseworthy acts of the Lord,
his might, and the wondrous works
he has performed.(E)
He established a testimony in Jacob
and set up a law in Israel,
which he commanded our fathers
to teach to their children(F)
so that a future generation—
children yet to be born—might know.
They were to rise and tell their children(G)
so that they might put their confidence in God
and not forget God’s works,
but keep his commands.(H)
Then they would not be like their fathers,
a stubborn and rebellious generation,
a generation whose heart was not loyal
and whose spirit was not faithful to God.(I)

The Ephraimite archers turned back
on the day of battle.(J)
10 They did not keep God’s covenant
and refused to live by his law.(K)
11 They forgot what he had done,
the wondrous works he had shown them.(L)
12 He worked wonders in the sight of their fathers
in the land of Egypt, the territory of Zoan.(M)
13 He split the sea and brought them across;
the water stood firm like a wall.(N)
14 He led them with a cloud by day
and with a fiery light throughout the night.(O)
15 He split rocks in the wilderness
and gave them drink as abundant as the depths.(P)
16 He brought streams out of the stone
and made water flow down like rivers.(Q)

17 But they continued to sin against him,
rebelling in the desert against the Most High.(R)
18 They deliberately[a] tested God,
demanding the food they craved.(S)
19 They spoke against God, saying,
“Is God able to provide food in the wilderness?
20 Look! He struck the rock and water gushed out;
torrents overflowed.(T)
But can he also provide bread
or furnish meat for his people?” (U)
21 Therefore, the Lord heard and became furious;
then fire broke out against Jacob,
and anger flared up against Israel(V)
22 because they did not believe God
or rely on his salvation.(W)
23 He gave a command to the clouds above
and opened the doors of heaven.(X)
24 He rained manna for them to eat;
he gave them grain from heaven.(Y)
25 People[b] ate the bread of angels.[c]
He sent them an abundant supply of food.(Z)
26 He made the east wind blow in the skies
and drove the south wind by his might.(AA)
27 He rained meat on them like dust,
and winged birds like the sand of the seas.
28 He made them fall in the camp,
all around the tents.(AB)
29 The people ate and were completely satisfied,
for he gave them what they craved.(AC)
30 Before they had turned from what they craved,
while the food was still in their mouths,
31 God’s anger flared up against them,
and he killed some of their best men.
He struck down Israel’s fit young men.(AD)

Proverbs 12:19-20

but a lying tongue, only a moment.(A)

but those who promote peace have joy.(B)

Deuteronomy 28:1-68, Luke 11:14-36, Psalms 77:1-20, Proverbs 12:18

Today is the 5th day of April, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I am Brian it’s great to be here with you as we step into a brand-new, shiny, sparkly week together. And normally we mark this time. It’s a brand-new week and it’s out in front of us and we get to choose what this week is going to look like. And yeah there’ll be all kinds of things that happen that we didn’t know about or that we weren’t prepared for, but we get to choose in advance how we’re gonna approach how this week is gonna look. And one of the ways that we do that well is to continue this rhythm and day after day after day, allowing God’s word to speak into our lives and inform our days. So, it’s great to be here with you, brand-new week. This week we’ll read from the Christian Standard Bible and we’ll move back into the book of Deuteronomy, the last things Moses has to say before he becomes a part of the history of Israel. And before this week is out, we will conclude this book of Deuteronomy and move into, squarely, into the next generation. But that’s a few days out in front of us. Today, Deuteronomy chapter 28.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word and we thank You for bringing us safely into this brand-new week. And here we are at this brand-new week and Your word will be the constant thread that leads us through this week. And we invite Your Holy Spirit to speak Your word into the moments that we need to hear. Give us eyes to see and ears to hear Your kingdom in this world transforming us from within so that we can see what You are doing and how we are a part of that story. And Your word will help us with this. And, so, we invite You Holy Spirit into every day of this coming week. Speak to us what we need to know. Challenge us where we need to be challenged. Disrupt and tip over whatever needs to be tipped over. We open ourselves completely to You, especially in this season where we are meditating upon and contemplating the cost of sin, the cost of our separation from You. Yes, we know that You are merciful and kind and compassionate, and You forgive us, but sin only separates us from You. And, so, as we’re contemplating that and as we’re allowing Your word to wash into our lives this week, we invite You to change us from within. Come Holy Spirit we pray. In the name of Jesus, we ask. Amen.

Announcements:

dailyaudiobible.com is the website, its home base, its where you find out what’s going on around here.

Today is Palm Sunday and this moves us into Holy Week. And maybe Holy Week and an Easter celebration and a Good Friday observance and all in kind of very different ways than maybe we’ve ever done before but here we are in this together. And, so, I’m grateful that we have each other as we continue our journey through the Scriptures. So, yesterday we completed the releasing of a chapter a day of the book Sneezing Jesus, a book that I wrote a few years ago, but man as all this coronavirus stuff started happening, started thinking about it and as things got more and more momentum, as things got amped up and we started separating from each other and all of this, I realized that this is really, really poignant for the…for the times. And, so, it is. And if you haven’t had a chance to…to take advantage of what we’re calling soul care around the Global Campfire this really is a good week to…to go through the chapters of Sneezing Jesus. It just really takes us through the life of Jesus. It gives us a really, really good look at the good news and then how the good news spreads and how it works in our lives. So, be sure to take advantage of that while it’s there.

If you want to partner with the Daily Audio Bible, you can do that at dailyaudiobible.com. There is a link that is on the homepage and I thank you with all my heart for your partnership. Deuteronomy 28

Blessings for Obedience

28 “Now(A) if you faithfully obey the Lord your God(B) and are careful to follow all his commands I am giving you today,(C) the Lord your God will put you far above all the nations of the earth.(D) All these blessings will come and overtake(E) you, because you obey the Lord your God:

You will be blessed in the city
and blessed in the country.(F)
Your offspring[a] will be blessed,
and your land’s produce,
and the offspring of your livestock,
including the young of your herds
and the newborn of your flocks.(G)
Your basket and kneading bowl will be blessed.
You will be blessed when you come in
and blessed when you go out.(H)

“The Lord will cause the enemies who rise up against you to be defeated before you. They will march out against you from one direction but flee from you in seven directions. The Lord will grant you a blessing on your barns and on everything you do;[b](I) he will bless you in the land the Lord your God is giving you.(J) The Lord will establish you as his holy people,(K) as he swore to you, if you obey the commands of the Lord your God and walk in his ways. 10 Then all the peoples of the earth will see that you bear the Lord’s name,(L) and they will stand in awe of you.(M) 11 The Lord will make you prosper abundantly with offspring,[c] the offspring of your livestock, and your land’s produce in the land the Lord swore to your fathers to give you. 12 The Lord will open for you his abundant storehouse,(N) the sky, to give your land rain in its season and to bless all the work of your hands.(O) You will lend to many nations, but you will not borrow. 13 The Lord will make you the head and not the tail;(P) you will only move upward and never downward if you listen to the Lord your God’s commands I am giving you today and are careful to follow them. 14 Do not turn aside to the right or the left from all the things I am commanding you today,(Q) and do not follow other gods to worship them.

Curses for Disobedience

15 “But if you do not obey the Lord your God by carefully following all his commands and statutes I am giving you today, all these curses will come and overtake(R) you:(S)

16 You will be cursed in the city
and cursed in the country.
17 Your basket and kneading bowl will be cursed.
18 Your offspring will be cursed,
and your land’s produce,
the young of your herds,
and the newborn of your flocks.
19 You will be cursed when you come in
and cursed when you go out.

20 The Lord will send against you curses, confusion,(T) and rebuke in everything you do until you are destroyed and quickly perish,(U) because of the wickedness of your actions in abandoning me.(V) 21 The Lord will make pestilence cling to you until he has exterminated you from the land you are entering to possess.(W) 22 The Lord will afflict you with wasting disease, fever, inflammation, burning heat, drought,[d] blight, and mildew;(X) these will pursue you until you perish. 23 The sky above you will be bronze, and the earth beneath you iron. 24 The Lord will turn the rain of your land into falling[e] dust; it will descend on you from the sky until you are destroyed. 25 The Lord will cause you to be defeated before your enemies. You will march out against them from one direction but flee from them in seven directions.(Y) You will be an object of horror(Z) to all the kingdoms of the earth. 26 Your corpses will be food for all the birds of the sky and the wild animals of the earth, with no one to scare them away.(AA)

27 “The Lord will afflict you with the boils of Egypt,(AB) tumors, a festering rash, and scabies, from which you cannot be cured. 28 The Lord will afflict you with madness, blindness, and mental confusion,(AC) 29 so that at noon you will grope as a blind person gropes in the dark.(AD) You will not be successful in anything you do. You will only be oppressed and robbed continually, and no one will help you.(AE) 30 You will become engaged to a woman, but another man will rape her. You will build a house but not live in it.(AF) You will plant a vineyard but not enjoy its fruit. 31 Your ox will be slaughtered before your eyes, but you will not eat any of it. Your donkey will be taken away from you and not returned to you. Your flock will be given to your enemies, and no one will help you. 32 Your sons and daughters will be given to another people, while your eyes grow weary looking for them every day. But you will be powerless to do anything.[f](AG) 33 A people you don’t know will eat your land’s produce and everything you have labored for. You will only be oppressed and crushed continually.(AH) 34 You will be driven mad by what you see. 35 The Lord will afflict you with painful and incurable boils on your knees and thighs—from the sole of your foot to the top of your head.(AI)

36 “The Lord will bring you and your king that you have appointed to a nation neither you nor your fathers have known, and there you will worship other gods, of wood and stone.(AJ) 37 You will become an object of horror, scorn, and ridicule among all the peoples where the Lord will drive you.(AK)

38 “You will sow much seed in the field but harvest little, because locusts will devour it. 39 You will plant and cultivate vineyards but not drink the wine or gather the grapes, because worms will eat them. 40 You will have olive trees throughout your territory but not moisten your skin with oil, because your olives will drop off. 41 You will father sons and daughters, but they will not remain yours, because they will be taken prisoner. 42 Buzzing insects will take possession of all your trees and your land’s produce. 43 The resident alien among you will rise higher and higher above you, while you sink lower and lower. 44 He will lend to you, but you won’t lend to him. He will be the head, and you will be the tail.

45 “All these curses will come, pursue, and overtake you until you are destroyed, since you did not obey the Lord your God and keep the commands and statutes he gave you. 46 These curses will be a sign and a wonder(AL) against you and your descendants forever. 47 Because you didn’t serve the Lord your God with joy and a cheerful heart,(AM) even though you had an abundance of everything, 48 you will serve your enemies the Lord will send against you, in famine, thirst, nakedness, and a lack of everything. He will place an iron yoke(AN) on your neck until he has destroyed you. 49 The Lord will bring a nation from far away, from the ends of the earth,(AO) to swoop down on you like an eagle,(AP) a nation whose language you won’t understand,(AQ) 50 a ruthless nation,[g] showing no respect for the old and not sparing the young. 51 They will eat the offspring of your livestock and your land’s produce until you are destroyed. They will leave you no grain, new wine, fresh oil, young of your herds, or newborn of your flocks until they cause you to perish. 52 They will besiege you within all your city gates until your high and fortified walls, that you trust in, come down throughout your land. They will besiege you within all your city gates throughout the land the Lord your God has given you.

53 “You will eat your offspring,[h] the flesh of your sons and daughters the Lord your God has given you(AR) during the siege and hardship your enemy imposes on you. 54 The most sensitive and refined man among you will look grudgingly[i] at his brother, the wife he embraces,[j] and the rest of his children, 55 refusing to share with any of them his children’s flesh that he will eat because he has nothing left during the siege and hardship your enemy imposes on you in all your towns. 56 The most sensitive and refined woman among you, who would not venture to set the sole of her foot on the ground because of her refinement and sensitivity, will begrudge the husband she embraces, her son, and her daughter, 57 the afterbirth that comes out from between her legs and the children she bears, because she will secretly eat them for lack of anything else during the siege and hardship your enemy imposes on you within your city gates.

58 “If you are not careful to obey all the words of this law, which are written in this scroll, by fearing this glorious and awe-inspiring name—the Lord, your God— 59 he will bring wondrous plagues on you and your descendants, severe and lasting plagues, and terrible and chronic sicknesses. 60 He will afflict you again with all the diseases of Egypt,(AS) which you dreaded, and they will cling to you. 61 The Lord will also afflict you with every sickness and plague not recorded in the book of this law, until you are destroyed. 62 Though you were as numerous as the stars of the sky, you will be left with only a few people, because you did not obey the Lord your God. 63 Just as the Lord was glad to cause you to prosper and to multiply you, so he will also be glad to cause you to perish and to destroy you. You will be ripped out of the land you are entering to possess. 64 Then the Lord will scatter you among all peoples from one end of the earth to the other,(AT) and there you will worship other gods, of wood and stone,(AU) which neither you nor your fathers have known.(AV) 65 You will find no peace among those nations, and there will be no resting place(AW) for the sole of your foot. There the Lord will give you a trembling heart, failing eyes, and a despondent spirit. 66 Your life will hang in doubt before you. You will be in dread night and day, never certain of survival. 67 In the morning you will say, ‘If only it were evening!’ and in the evening you will say, ‘If only it were morning!’—because of the dread you will have in your heart and because of what you will see. 68 The Lord will take you back in ships to Egypt by a route that I said you would never see again.(AX) There you will sell yourselves to your enemies as male and female slaves, but no one will buy you.”

Luke 11:14-36

A House Divided

14 Now(A) he was driving out a demon(B) that was mute.(C) When the demon came out, the man who had been mute spoke, and the crowds were amazed. 15 But some of them said, “He drives out demons by Beelzebul,(D) the ruler(E) of the demons.”(F) 16 And others, as a test,(G) were demanding of him a sign(H) from heaven.

17 Knowing their thoughts,(I) he told them, “Every kingdom divided(J) against itself is headed for destruction, and a house divided against itself falls. 18 If Satan(K) also is divided against himself, how will his kingdom(L) stand? For you say I drive out demons by Beelzebul. 19 And if I drive out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your sons(M) drive them out? For this reason they will be your judges. 20 If I drive out demons by the finger of God,(N) then the kingdom of God(O) has come upon you. 21 When a strong man, fully armed, guards his estate, his possessions are secure. 22 But when one stronger than he attacks and overpowers(P) him, he takes from him all his weapons[a](Q) he trusted(R) in, and divides up his plunder.(S) 23 Anyone who is not with me is against me,(T) and anyone who does not gather with me scatters.

An Unclean Spirit’s Return

24 “When(U) an unclean spirit(V) comes out of a person, it roams through waterless places looking for rest,(W) and not finding rest, it then[b] says, ‘I’ll go back to my house that I came from.’ 25 Returning, it finds the house swept and put in order. 26 Then it goes and brings seven other spirits(X) more evil than itself, and they enter and settle down there. As a result, that person’s last condition is worse than the first.”(Y)

True Blessedness

27 As he was saying these things, a woman from the crowd(Z) raised her voice and said to him, “Blessed is the womb that bore you and the one who nursed you!” (AA)

28 He said, “Rather, blessed are those who hear the word of God(AB) and keep it.”(AC)

The Sign of Jonah

29 As the crowds were increasing, he began saying: “This generation(AD) is an evil generation.(AE) It demands a sign,(AF) but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.[c](AG) 30 For just as Jonah became a sign to the people of Nineveh, so also the Son of Man(AH) will be to this generation. 31 The queen of the south(AI) will rise up at the judgment(AJ) with the men of this generation and condemn(AK) them, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon,(AL) and look—something greater than Solomon is here. 32 The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, because they repented at Jonah’s preaching, and look—something greater than Jonah is here.

The Lamp of the Body

33 “No(AM) one lights a lamp(AN) and puts it in the cellar or under a basket,[d] but on a lampstand, so that those who come in may see its light. 34 Your eye is the lamp of the body.(AO) When your eye is healthy, your whole body is also full of light. But when it is bad,(AP) your body is also full of darkness. 35 Take care, then, that the light in you is not darkness. 36 If, therefore, your whole body is full of light, with no part of it in darkness, it will be entirely illuminated, as when a lamp shines its light on you.”

Psalm 77

Psalm 77

Confidence in a Time of Crisis

For the choir director: according to Jeduthun. Of Asaph.(A) A psalm.

I cry aloud to God,
aloud to God, and he will hear me.(B)
I sought the Lord in my day of trouble.
My hands were continually lifted up
all night long;
I refused to be comforted.(C)
I think of God; I groan;
I meditate; my spirit becomes weak.(D)Selah

You have kept me from closing my eyes;
I am troubled and cannot speak.(E)
I consider days of old,
years long past.(F)
At night I remember my music;
I meditate in my heart, and my spirit ponders.(G)

“Will the Lord reject forever
and never again show favor?(H)
Has his faithful love ceased forever?
Is his promise at an end for all generations?(I)
Has God forgotten to be gracious?
Has he in anger withheld his compassion?” (J)Selah

10 So I say, “I am grieved
that the right hand of the Most High has changed.”[a](K)
11 I will remember the Lord’s works;
yes, I will remember your ancient wonders.(L)
12 I will reflect on all you have done
and meditate on your actions.(M)

13 God, your way is holy.
What god is great like God?(N)
14 You are the God who works wonders;
you revealed your strength among the peoples.(O)
15 With power you redeemed your people,
the descendants of Jacob and Joseph.(P)Selah

16 The water saw you, God.
The water saw you; it trembled.
Even the depths shook.(Q)
17 The clouds poured down water.
The storm clouds thundered;
your arrows flashed back and forth.(R)
18 The sound of your thunder was in the whirlwind;
lightning lit up the world.(S)
The earth shook and quaked.(T)
19 Your way went through the sea
and your path through the vast water,
but your footprints were unseen.(U)
20 You led your people like a flock(V)
by the hand of Moses and Aaron.(W)

Deuteronomy 26-27

Firstfruits and Tithes

26 When you have entered the land the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance and have taken possession of it and settled in it, take some of the firstfruits(A) of all that you produce from the soil of the land the Lord your God is giving you and put them in a basket. Then go to the place the Lord your God will choose as a dwelling for his Name(B) and say to the priest in office at the time, “I declare today to the Lord your God that I have come to the land the Lord swore to our ancestors to give us.” The priest shall take the basket from your hands and set it down in front of the altar of the Lord your God. Then you shall declare before the Lord your God: “My father was a wandering(C) Aramean,(D) and he went down into Egypt with a few people(E) and lived there and became a great nation,(F) powerful and numerous. But the Egyptians mistreated us and made us suffer,(G) subjecting us to harsh labor.(H) Then we cried out to the Lord, the God of our ancestors, and the Lord heard our voice(I) and saw(J) our misery,(K) toil and oppression.(L) So the Lord brought us out of Egypt(M) with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm,(N) with great terror and with signs and wonders.(O) He brought us to this place and gave us this land, a land flowing with milk and honey;(P) 10 and now I bring the firstfruits of the soil that you, Lord, have given me.(Q)” Place the basket before the Lord your God and bow down before him. 11 Then you and the Levites(R) and the foreigners residing among you shall rejoice(S) in all the good things the Lord your God has given to you and your household.

12 When you have finished setting aside a tenth(T) of all your produce in the third year, the year of the tithe,(U) you shall give it to the Levite, the foreigner, the fatherless and the widow, so that they may eat in your towns and be satisfied. 13 Then say to the Lord your God: “I have removed from my house the sacred portion and have given it to the Levite, the foreigner, the fatherless and the widow, according to all you commanded. I have not turned aside from your commands nor have I forgotten any of them.(V) 14 I have not eaten any of the sacred portion while I was in mourning, nor have I removed any of it while I was unclean,(W) nor have I offered any of it to the dead. I have obeyed the Lord my God; I have done everything you commanded me. 15 Look down from heaven,(X) your holy dwelling place, and bless(Y) your people Israel and the land you have given us as you promised on oath to our ancestors, a land flowing with milk and honey.”

Follow the Lord’s Commands

16 The Lord your God commands you this day to follow these decrees and laws; carefully observe them with all your heart and with all your soul.(Z) 17 You have declared this day that the Lord is your God and that you will walk in obedience to him, that you will keep his decrees, commands and laws—that you will listen to him.(AA) 18 And the Lord has declared this day that you are his people, his treasured possession(AB) as he promised, and that you are to keep all his commands. 19 He has declared that he will set you in praise,(AC) fame and honor high above all the nations(AD) he has made and that you will be a people holy(AE) to the Lord your God, as he promised.

The Altar on Mount Ebal

27 Moses and the elders of Israel commanded the people: “Keep all these commands(AF) that I give you today. When you have crossed the Jordan(AG) into the land the Lord your God is giving you, set up some large stones(AH) and coat them with plaster.(AI) Write on them all the words of this law when you have crossed over to enter the land the Lord your God is giving you, a land flowing with milk and honey,(AJ) just as the Lord, the God of your ancestors, promised you. And when you have crossed the Jordan, set up these stones on Mount Ebal,(AK) as I command you today, and coat them with plaster. Build there an altar(AL) to the Lord your God, an altar of stones. Do not use any iron tool(AM) on them. Build the altar of the Lord your God with fieldstones and offer burnt offerings on it to the Lord your God. Sacrifice fellowship offerings(AN) there, eating them and rejoicing(AO) in the presence of the Lord your God.(AP) And you shall write very clearly all the words of this law on these stones(AQ) you have set up.”(AR)

Curses From Mount Ebal

Then Moses and the Levitical(AS) priests said to all Israel, “Be silent, Israel, and listen! You have now become the people of the Lord your God.(AT) 10 Obey the Lord your God and follow his commands and decrees that I give you today.”

11 On the same day Moses commanded the people:

12 When you have crossed the Jordan, these tribes shall stand on Mount Gerizim(AU) to bless the people: Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar,(AV) Joseph and Benjamin.(AW) 13 And these tribes shall stand on Mount Ebal(AX) to pronounce curses: Reuben, Gad, Asher, Zebulun, Dan and Naphtali.

14 The Levites shall recite to all the people of Israel in a loud voice:

15 “Cursed is anyone who makes an idol(AY)—a thing detestable(AZ) to the Lord, the work of skilled hands—and sets it up in secret.”

Then all the people shall say, “Amen!”(BA)

16 “Cursed is anyone who dishonors their father or mother.”(BB)

Then all the people shall say, “Amen!”

17 “Cursed is anyone who moves their neighbor’s boundary stone.”(BC)

Then all the people shall say, “Amen!”

18 “Cursed is anyone who leads the blind astray on the road.”(BD)

Then all the people shall say, “Amen!”

19 “Cursed is anyone who withholds justice from the foreigner,(BE) the fatherless or the widow.”(BF)

Then all the people shall say, “Amen!”

20 “Cursed is anyone who sleeps with his father’s wife, for he dishonors his father’s bed.”(BG)

Then all the people shall say, “Amen!”

21 “Cursed is anyone who has sexual relations with any animal.”(BH)

Then all the people shall say, “Amen!”

22 “Cursed is anyone who sleeps with his sister, the daughter of his father or the daughter of his mother.”(BI)

Then all the people shall say, “Amen!”

23 “Cursed is anyone who sleeps with his mother-in-law.”(BJ)

Then all the people shall say, “Amen!”

24 “Cursed is anyone who kills(BK) their neighbor secretly.”(BL)

Then all the people shall say, “Amen!”

25 “Cursed is anyone who accepts a bribe to kill an innocent person.”(BM)

Then all the people shall say, “Amen!”

26 “Cursed is anyone who does not uphold the words of this law by carrying them out.”(BN)

Then all the people shall say, “Amen!”(BO)

Luke 10:38-11:13

At the Home of Martha and Mary

38 As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha(A) opened her home to him. 39 She had a sister called Mary,(B) who sat at the Lord’s feet(C) listening to what he said. 40 But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care(D) that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”

41 “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried(E) and upset about many things, 42 but few things are needed—or indeed only one.[a](F) Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”

Jesus’ Teaching on Prayer(G)(H)

11 One day Jesus was praying(I) in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord,(J) teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.”

He said to them, “When you pray, say:

“‘Father,[b]
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom(K) come.[c]
Give us each day our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins,
for we also forgive everyone who sins against us.[d](L)
And lead us not into temptation.[e]’”(M)

Then Jesus said to them, “Suppose you have a friend, and you go to him at midnight and say, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves of bread; a friend of mine on a journey has come to me, and I have no food to offer him.’ And suppose the one inside answers, ‘Don’t bother me. The door is already locked, and my children and I are in bed. I can’t get up and give you anything.’ I tell you, even though he will not get up and give you the bread because of friendship, yet because of your shameless audacity[f] he will surely get up and give you as much as you need.(N)

“So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you;(O) seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.

11 “Which of you fathers, if your son asks for[g] a fish, will give him a snake instead? 12 Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? 13 If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”

Psalm 76[a]

For the director of music. With stringed instruments. A psalm of Asaph. A song.

God is renowned in Judah;
in Israel his name is great.(A)
His tent is in Salem,(B)
his dwelling place in Zion.(C)
There he broke the flashing arrows,(D)
the shields and the swords, the weapons of war.[b](E)

At your rebuke,(I) God of Jacob,
both horse and chariot(J) lie still.

It is you alone who are to be feared.(K)
Who can stand(L) before you when you are angry?(M)
From heaven you pronounced judgment,
and the land feared(N) and was quiet—
when you, God, rose up to judge,(O)
to save all the afflicted(P) of the land.
10 Surely your wrath against mankind brings you praise,(Q)
and the survivors of your wrath are restrained.[c]

Deuteronomy 26:1-27:26, Luke 10:38-11:13, Psalms 76:1-12, Proverbs 12:15-17

Today is the 4th day of April, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I am Brian it’s great to be here with you as we head into this first weekend of the month, a brand-new month, the 4th month of the year. And, yeah, April and May, these are beautiful times in the rolling hills of Tennessee. So, I’m glad that we can be here, wherever you are, whatever rolling hills or flat plains, you might be in or tropics or coastland or whatever. Wherever you might be it is wonderful to be here with you today to take the next step forward. So, we’ve been reading from the New International Version this week, which is what we’ll do today. And we’re continuing the book of Deuteronomy the…the final commands, the final review, the final things, the final charge of Moses in the Bible. After this, Moses becomes a part of history and we continue forward. So, this is what he has to say. And today we will read Deuteronomy chapters 26 and 27.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word and we thank You for another week in Your word. And, so, as we…as we end another of our weeks…and we normally take this moment to look back for second, and we look back over the full three months of the year now into this fourth month, we look back at all that You’ve spoken, all that You have done, all that You are doing. We thank You for the different disruptions that You have brought our way that make us open our eyes for but a moment because this is what it means to have eyes to see and we want that. And, so, we welcome it and we welcome You, Holy Spirit, into any area of our lives, anything that’s going on. Nothing is off limits to You. It’s ridiculous to think that we would keep something from You and yet we try because we try to keep lots of things from ourselves. We invite You into all of it. And we also take this moment to look forward and in toward the new week and settling into this month and the new territory in the Scriptures and in our lives that we will experience. We sit here at this moment of ending a week and preparing for a new one with a heart of gratitude. We thank You for Your presence in our lives that is never ending and is always there and all we need is to be aware. All we need is eyes to see and ears to hear that You are always with us. And, so, we release this week to You and invite Your Holy Spirit to come into the day ahead and into the week ahead and into the month ahead. And we pray this in Your mighty and holy name, the name of Jesus. Amen.

Announcements:

dailyaudiobible.com is the website, its home base, it’s where you find out what’s going on around here.

And today is the final day, the final chapter of the book Sneezing Jesus that we’ve been releasing for the last, I guess, week and a half. So, yeah, one chapter a day has led us here to the final chapter being released today. Yesterday was a chapter called Eucharist, an exploration of the final moments of Jesus life. Today’s chapter is called Sneezing Jesus and it is certainly an exploration of the resurrection. And what a time for this since…since we’re moving into holy week beginning tomorrow. But it’s more than just an exploration of the resurrection, it is an exploration of the implications of the resurrection and just talking about how the gospel spread like a virus from person to person to person and how a sneeze works. the science of it and the spiritual implications of how…how we can make each other…we can make each other sick. I guess we’ve learned that lesson pretty clearly. It's…it’s been on display like for all of these weeks. We’re pretty clear on the fact that we can make each other sick but we’re not really focusing very much on the fact that we can make each other well. And, so, we have reached this, the final chapter of Sneezing Jesus and then we’ll go into holy week next week. I said yesterday, like it was nothing timed…like this wasn’t even on the radar a month ago for any of us…like…and none of what’s going on for the most part, but here we are in. This is a very poignant chapter in a very poignant time in our lives. So, be sure to check that out. All of the chapters of…of Sneezing Jesus, they’re gonna stay up for a little while. We’re not gonna keep them up indefinitely but while we’re going through this. And, so, if you’ve kind of moved through this book and…and have found it helpful or encouraging then you can certainly share, share the links.

Okay, if you want to partner with the Daily Audio Bible, thank you. You can do that at dailyaudiobible.com. There’s a link on the homepage. Deuteronomy 23-25

Exclusion From the Assembly

23 [a]No one who has been emasculated(A) by crushing or cutting may enter the assembly of the Lord.

No one born of a forbidden marriage[b] nor any of their descendants may enter the assembly of the Lord, not even in the tenth generation.

No Ammonite(B) or Moabite or any of their descendants may enter the assembly of the Lord, not even in the tenth generation.(C) For they did not come to meet you with bread and water(D) on your way when you came out of Egypt, and they hired Balaam(E) son of Beor from Pethor in Aram Naharaim[c](F) to pronounce a curse on you.(G) However, the Lord your God would not listen to Balaam but turned the curse(H) into a blessing for you, because the Lord your God loves(I) you. Do not seek a treaty(J) of friendship with them as long as you live.(K)

Do not despise an Edomite,(L) for the Edomites are related to you.(M) Do not despise an Egyptian, because you resided as foreigners in their country.(N) The third generation of children born to them may enter the assembly of the Lord.

Uncleanness in the Camp

When you are encamped against your enemies, keep away from everything impure.(O) 10 If one of your men is unclean because of a nocturnal emission, he is to go outside the camp and stay there.(P) 11 But as evening approaches he is to wash himself, and at sunset(Q) he may return to the camp.(R)

12 Designate a place outside the camp where you can go to relieve yourself. 13 As part of your equipment have something to dig with, and when you relieve yourself, dig a hole and cover up your excrement. 14 For the Lord your God moves(S) about in your camp to protect you and to deliver your enemies to you. Your camp must be holy,(T) so that he will not see among you anything indecent and turn away from you.

Miscellaneous Laws

15 If a slave has taken refuge(U) with you, do not hand them over to their master.(V) 16 Let them live among you wherever they like and in whatever town they choose. Do not oppress(W) them.

17 No Israelite man(X) or woman is to become a shrine prostitute.(Y) 18 You must not bring the earnings of a female prostitute or of a male prostitute[d] into the house of the Lord your God to pay any vow, because the Lord your God detests them both.(Z)

19 Do not charge a fellow Israelite interest, whether on money or food or anything else that may earn interest.(AA) 20 You may charge a foreigner(AB) interest, but not a fellow Israelite, so that the Lord your God may bless(AC) you in everything you put your hand to in the land you are entering to possess.

21 If you make a vow to the Lord your God, do not be slow to pay it,(AD) for the Lord your God will certainly demand it of you and you will be guilty of sin.(AE) 22 But if you refrain from making a vow, you will not be guilty.(AF) 23 Whatever your lips utter you must be sure to do, because you made your vow freely to the Lord your God with your own mouth.

24 If you enter your neighbor’s vineyard, you may eat all the grapes you want, but do not put any in your basket. 25 If you enter your neighbor’s grainfield, you may pick kernels with your hands, but you must not put a sickle to their standing grain.(AG)

24 If a man marries a woman who becomes displeasing to him(AH) because he finds something indecent about her, and he writes her a certificate of divorce,(AI) gives it to her and sends her from his house, and if after she leaves his house she becomes the wife of another man, and her second husband dislikes her and writes her a certificate of divorce, gives it to her and sends her from his house, or if he dies, then her first husband, who divorced her, is not allowed to marry her again after she has been defiled. That would be detestable in the eyes of the Lord. Do not bring sin upon the land the Lord(AJ) your God is giving you as an inheritance.

If a man has recently married, he must not be sent to war or have any other duty laid on him. For one year he is to be free to stay at home and bring happiness to the wife he has married.(AK)

Do not take a pair of millstones—not even the upper one—as security for a debt, because that would be taking a person’s livelihood as security.(AL)

If someone is caught kidnapping a fellow Israelite and treating or selling them as a slave, the kidnapper must die.(AM) You must purge the evil from among you.(AN)

In cases of defiling skin diseases,[e] be very careful to do exactly as the Levitical(AO) priests instruct you. You must follow carefully what I have commanded them.(AP) Remember what the Lord your God did to Miriam along the way after you came out of Egypt.(AQ)

10 When you make a loan of any kind to your neighbor, do not go into their house to get what is offered to you as a pledge.(AR) 11 Stay outside and let the neighbor to whom you are making the loan bring the pledge out to you. 12 If the neighbor is poor, do not go to sleep with their pledge(AS) in your possession. 13 Return their cloak by sunset(AT) so that your neighbor may sleep in it.(AU) Then they will thank you, and it will be regarded as a righteous act in the sight of the Lord your God.(AV)

14 Do not take advantage of a hired worker who is poor and needy, whether that worker is a fellow Israelite or a foreigner residing in one of your towns.(AW) 15 Pay them their wages each day before sunset, because they are poor(AX) and are counting on it.(AY) Otherwise they may cry to the Lord against you, and you will be guilty of sin.(AZ)

16 Parents are not to be put to death for their children, nor children put to death for their parents; each will die for their own sin.(BA)

17 Do not deprive the foreigner or the fatherless(BB) of justice,(BC) or take the cloak of the widow as a pledge. 18 Remember that you were slaves in Egypt(BD) and the Lord your God redeemed you from there. That is why I command you to do this.

19 When you are harvesting in your field and you overlook a sheaf, do not go back to get it.(BE) Leave it for the foreigner,(BF) the fatherless and the widow,(BG) so that the Lord your God may bless(BH) you in all the work of your hands. 20 When you beat the olives from your trees, do not go over the branches a second time.(BI) Leave what remains for the foreigner, the fatherless and the widow. 21 When you harvest the grapes in your vineyard, do not go over the vines again. Leave what remains for the foreigner, the fatherless and the widow. 22 Remember that you were slaves in Egypt. That is why I command you to do this.(BJ)

25 When people have a dispute, they are to take it to court and the judges(BK) will decide the case,(BL) acquitting(BM) the innocent and condemning the guilty.(BN) If the guilty person deserves to be beaten,(BO) the judge shall make them lie down and have them flogged in his presence with the number of lashes the crime deserves, but the judge must not impose more than forty lashes.(BP) If the guilty party is flogged more than that, your fellow Israelite will be degraded in your eyes.(BQ)

Do not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain.(BR)

If brothers are living together and one of them dies without a son, his widow must not marry outside the family. Her husband’s brother shall take her and marry her and fulfill the duty of a brother-in-law to her.(BS) The first son she bears shall carry on the name of the dead brother so that his name will not be blotted out from Israel.(BT)

However, if a man does not want to marry his brother’s wife,(BU) she shall go to the elders at the town gate(BV) and say, “My husband’s brother refuses to carry on his brother’s name in Israel. He will not fulfill the duty of a brother-in-law to me.”(BW) Then the elders of his town shall summon him and talk to him. If he persists in saying, “I do not want to marry her,” his brother’s widow shall go up to him in the presence of the elders, take off one of his sandals,(BX) spit in his face(BY) and say, “This is what is done to the man who will not build up his brother’s family line.” 10 That man’s line shall be known in Israel as The Family of the Unsandaled.

11 If two men are fighting and the wife of one of them comes to rescue her husband from his assailant, and she reaches out and seizes him by his private parts, 12 you shall cut off her hand. Show her no pity.(BZ)

13 Do not have two differing weights in your bag—one heavy, one light.(CA) 14 Do not have two differing measures in your house—one large, one small. 15 You must have accurate and honest weights and measures, so that you may live long(CB) in the land the Lord your God is giving you. 16 For the Lord your God detests anyone who does these things, anyone who deals dishonestly.(CC)

17 Remember what the Amalekites(CD) did to you along the way when you came out of Egypt. 18 When you were weary and worn out, they met you on your journey and attacked all who were lagging behind; they had no fear of God.(CE) 19 When the Lord your God gives you rest(CF) from all the enemies(CG) around you in the land he is giving you to possess as an inheritance, you shall blot out the name of Amalek(CH) from under heaven. Do not forget!

Luke 10:13-37

13 “Woe to you,(A) Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth(B) and ashes. 14 But it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment than for you. 15 And you, Capernaum,(C) will you be lifted to the heavens? No, you will go down to Hades.[a]

16 “Whoever listens to you listens to me; whoever rejects you rejects me; but whoever rejects me rejects him who sent me.”(D)

17 The seventy-two(E) returned with joy and said, “Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name.”(F)

18 He replied, “I saw Satan(G) fall like lightning from heaven.(H) 19 I have given you authority to trample on snakes(I) and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you. 20 However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”(J)

21 At that time Jesus, full of joy through the Holy Spirit, said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children.(K) Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do.

22 “All things have been committed to me by my Father.(L) No one knows who the Son is except the Father, and no one knows who the Father is except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.”(M)

23 Then he turned to his disciples and said privately, “Blessed are the eyes that see what you see. 24 For I tell you that many prophets and kings wanted to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.”(N)

The Parable of the Good Samaritan(O)

25 On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”(P)

26 “What is written in the Law?” he replied. “How do you read it?”

27 He answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’[b];(Q) and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[c](R)

28 “You have answered correctly,” Jesus replied. “Do this and you will live.”(S)

29 But he wanted to justify himself,(T) so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”

30 In reply Jesus said: “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he was attacked by robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. 31 A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side.(U) 32 So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a Samaritan,(V) as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. 34 He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him. 35 The next day he took out two denarii[d] and gave them to the innkeeper. ‘Look after him,’ he said, ‘and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.’

36 “Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?”

37 The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.”

Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.”

Deuteronomy 23:1-25:19, Luke 10:13-37, Psalms 75:1-10, Proverbs 12:12-14

Today is the 3rd day of April, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I’m Brian it’s great to be here with you as…as we move into this month, settle into the month of April and continue our journey through this year together day by day, step-by-step. And it is a supreme honor to be here with you today to see where this next step in the story of the Bible leads us. So, we’re working our way through Deuteronomy and we have several days left working through Deuteronomy. And I’ve kind of reminded us along the way, these are the last things that Moses has to say. And some of the things that he has to say are review of things that we lived through in the Scriptures, and he’s reminding the people primarily of a few things - who they are, where they came from, where they’re going, who God is. And we all need these reminders every day. So, let’s take that next step…step forward in the Old Testament. Deuteronomy chapters 23, 24, and 25 today.

Commentary:

Okay. So, in the book of Luke today Jesus tells a very, very famous parable, a very famous story, the story of the good Samaritan, so it’s unlikely that none of us know this story. In fact, all of us should know this story, we just read even if was your first high, but it’s a very famous parable that gives us a sense of who is my neighbor, that is the question that Jesus is answering. “If you’re to love your neighbor as yourself, then define for me, which is…this a very rabbinical Hebrew thing to do…then define for me who is my neighbor because if that can be explicitly defined, then it can be explicitly known whether I’m obeying tat command or not.” So, by way of giving an explicit definition Jesus tells the story, which reveals that it’s not going to be as tidy as everybody wanted it to be. And Jesus wanders in some…into some territory here. The back story of this story is so compelling. Even though the story stands on its own, the back story makes it riveting because Jesus walked into some interesting territory, like a long-running simmering battle over who has the true faith, who is worshiping the true God is baked in here. So, a man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, Jesus said, and he got attacked by robbers on that way. So the road down from Jerusalem to Jericho is an 18 mile walk through the Kedron Valley that is very very steep and very dangerous in certain areas and was notorious for bandits, especially once you got out into the desert, especially once it was opening up in Jerusalem. This was the valley of the shadow of death that David wrote Psalm 23 about. So, a man getting jumped and beaten up and robbed, not a good thing but not an unusual thing on this road leads. And these robbers, they strip off the guys clothes, they beat him. He’s beaten up. He’s half dead and then Jesus starts commenting and defining this neighbor concept. A priest is going down the road, sees the man beaten up, gets to the other side of the road, keeps going right on by him. A Levite, right? So, these are the top people leading God’s people, the religious people. A Levite sees the guy, passes on the other side as well. Then a Samaritan comes by and cares for him. And we can deduce just at the surface level of the story that this is a big deal, that this Samaritan would be the one to care for him. So, basically this goes back into the Old Testament and we get to the tine…when we get to the time of the kings, we will read of all of this, when there does come a point when the kingdoms divide. Like in the Old Testament there isn’t even a kingdom yet. We haven’t crossed the Jordan River, but we will cross the Jordan River when we get to the next book, the book of Joshua. Eventually there is a kingdom. Eventually there are kings. Eventually, the kingdoms split into two different kingdoms, the northern kingdom of Israel and the southern kingdom of Judah. The northern kingdom falls into idolatry, into a highly modified way of doing worship and eventually this northern kingdom sets its capital in a new city named Samaria. And eventually the Assyrian Empire attacks, Samaria, and the kingdom of Israel, destroying it. And one of the ways of Empire building at the time was to displace the people that were conquered, like to move them into exile into some other conquered territory while taking that other conquered people and moving them in so that the concept of a like a homeland gets obliterated over generations. So, the kingdom of Israel was already doing some wacky stuff, then they were taken into exile, then all of these new people come in and mix in and they don’t know how to worship the God of the land. And, so, a priest is appointed to show them and its…it’s different than what’s going on in Jerusalem. Those 10 tribes in the north, they kind of disappear, they are assimilated. They disappear. And there’s all this mixture in the north. Eventually the kingdom of Judah also falls and is taken into exile after the same fashion only by the Babylonian Empire. And then later, not to make this all completely confusing, but later the Persian Empire defeats the Babylonian empire and allows this remnant of Hebrew people to go back to this land that used to be their…their homeland. Meanwhile, the people of Samaria, they've…they’re their mixed up, but they’ve been there all along, and they’ve been trying to worship and even worship Yahweh, but they do it completely different. And, so, they are looked down upon. They don’t mingle with each other. A long-running family rift that ended up in a divided kingdom. All kinds of different worship styles and understandings separated these people groups. So, for Jesus to make a Samaritan, the hero of this story while trying to answer the question, “who is my neighbor”, this is kind of a big deal, especially when He places a priest and a Levite in the story and they pass this wounded person by who was likely a fellow Hebrew. He’s critiquing the Hebrew religion in the process. To make a Samaritan the hero of the story is to make someone who shouldn’t be trusted, who shouldn’t be interacted with, who you definitely shouldn’t be friendly toward, who you should be suspicious of, that’s who He’s making the hero of the story. So, on the one hand, Jesus is unpacking “anybody can be a neighbor no matter what they think, no matter what you think of them. No matter what they believe anybody can be a neighbor.” But He’s also commenting on the religious establishment here because in this story they weren’t the neighbor. But I don’t think we really need to unpack this anymore to know how it overlays with our own lives. I mean to get ourselves in the story all we have to do is think about the people that we are suspicious of, the people that we don’t trust. Maybe they don’t look like us, maybe they do, but for whatever reason, they are marginalized in our mind as less than in some way. And we just lead ourselves into the story like Jesus led his hearers. Suppose we are the one that gets jumped and robbed and it doesn’t happen by the people that we’re suspicious of. And then the ones that we would expect that would come to our rescue don’t. And then it is the one that we’ve marginalized, that we’ve considered less than, the one that we’re suspicious of that comes and actually cares for our needs. Then we enter into the disruption that Jesus story is intended to bring about. You don’t have to be a Christian to be a good neighbor, but if you are a believer and act like the religious people in this story, then you are not a good neighbor. And if we’ll take that and stir it into our coffee and drink it down and observe ourselves this day, we will find ourselves in this story because the ultimate question is, “who are we in this story?”

Prayer:

Father, we invite You into that. Who are we in this story? What are our responses and prejudices and stereotypes and suspicions? Where are they leading us? And do they give us eyes to see and ears to hear at all? Are they helping us in that regard? This parable that You told today Jesus, it’s ancient now, couple thousand years since it’s been spoken and yet it is every bit as poignant as it ever was. It’s timeless because it is speaking to our hearts and the posture of heart that we carry toward others. And, so, we invite You into that. Give us eyes to see Your kingdom and how we might see everyone as our neighbor. Come Holy Spirit we pray into this we ask in Jesus name. Amen.

And, so, today’s chapter is called Eucharist. And we will be in that chapter exploring the arrest, the trial, the execution of Jesus. And, so, don’t miss that. And in a way I’m kind of sad it’s going to come to…to a close tomorrow that it will be ending tomorrow but I am so grateful that we have been able to have this opportunity. But we’re not there yet. Community Prayer and Praise:

Hi this is Victoria Soldier just calling tonight to pray for some of the DABbers. I was listening at Gavin and I heard about his brother who lost his wife at 27 years old. Oh my Lord and what the poor man is going through. I’m doping…I’m praying for you and your family. I want to pray for them right now Gavin. I also want to pray for Asia and all the Asian people and what they’re going through because of the confusion of people going to blame them. Don’t they know that…that any kind of disease is come from sin, it doesn’t come from people. Lord they…we ask you to touch them Lord and open up their eyes and help them to look towards Jesus for healing instead of a finger to blame. I understand what you’re going through Asia. I’m…I’…I’ve been a black American. We…we…we know…we…we’ve faced those situations before, but God is faithful and He’s able. He brought us from a mighty long way and He still haven’t stopped. He said he that is started a good work in you shall perform until the of Jesus Christ. Lord, I’m not only praying for this nation but I’m praying for the people who are going through because of it even the medical people. I’m praying that God will heal this nation and will open up our eyes and help us to love one another and come together as what we call ourselves, a United States not of divided states. Gracious Father we praise You, we lift You up, we magnify Your name. Lord I pray for that Father that lost his life and he has those children to raise. Lord You have Your way. Lord You have Your way, You touch him, You strengthen him like never before. Lord things it’s so…some things Lord we just don’t know the answer. All we need to do is trust in You because You’re a God, You’re a great God, You’re a mighty God, You’re a holy God through the good time as well as the bad and that …

This is Free Indeed in Western Maryland calling in today for a couple reasons. First of all, I was prompted the other day to call for one of my coworkers for prayer from. The reason that I’m calling for prayer for him is, I guess it’s also partially for me. I know I’m probably not the only one that has those coworkers that are just hard to get along with. He is the kind of guy who periodically comes in late and by late, I mean once or twice a week, 15 minutes here a half hour there. Somebody else has to cover the work for him. And he’s just the kind of guy that makes it hard for me to love. I try really hard to love everybody and he just makes it hard for me. But also, he brings these books to work that I’ll see him reading and it’s like __ on the book of the dead, 777 by Alister Crowley, the satanic bible. So, he has these other things that I know I should be praying for and I was prompted on Wednesday to call and pray for him and I didn’t and as a result my brother ended up in an argument with him. And…and I was thinking then, I wasn’t being obedient to God. That’s my fault. I should’ve called. And then I thought, “okay I need to call tomorrow morning”, which would’ve been Thursday morning. I didn’t call again. Thursday morning, he and I ended up in an argument. So, the whole purpose I guess is to pray for Steve that God will lead him where he needs to lead him, that God will open his heart and that…and he’ll forgive me for not being obedient. So, guys when you’re prompted by the Holy Spirit to pray for somebody, please, please follow my example and…

[singing starts] Dear father you’re too high in the lowest valley. Yes, I will bless your name. Oh yes, I will sing for joy when my heart is heavy all my days yes, I will for all my days yes, I will [singing ends]. Good day Daily Audio Bible family this is Sherry calling from British Columbia Canada. Feel free to not play this message if you don’t want to but I just got a prayer chain from my grandmother who actually was the reason I came to know Jesus. And it’s a call to just say the Lord’s prayer, not just, but to say the Lord’s prayer in a hope of putting a stop to the latest coronavirus. So, I’m gonna do the prayer with you because it said eight people but you’re way more than eight so please join me. Our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil for yours is the kingdom the power and the glory forever and ever amen. Lord, we just ask that you would put a stop to this coronavirus and that you would receive all the praise, all the honor, and all the glory. Please share with your friends and family. Have a good evening. I love you DAB. This is Sherry from British Columbia Canada. Bye-bye.

Good morning, I live in New York City and as everyone is aware, we are sort of at the heart of the coronavirus issue and…and I really just want to ask for prayer for our government leaders and specifically leaders of government agencies. God has placed a lot of us in those…in those places and some in places of leadership and I’m just acutely aware that our city is in need and our leaders are indeed of God’s wisdom. And there are a lot of us who know Him and not just by name. And we know Him, God as being holy and powerful and sovereign. And we are humbling ourselves and just asking for His wisdom. So, if you would just agree with me and so many others across the city that God would just pour out His wisdom in the same way that He did with Joseph to help preserve and sustain the lives of those who are dependent on the city and the economy for their livelihood. So, thank you so much for agreeing with me in prayer. And thank you…thank you for believing that God is able. And He is. Amen.

This is Candace from Oregon praying for you, each one. I’m reading to you from the Voice version of the Bible, the last verse of John 16 and the first versus of James 1. In this world Jesus said you will be plagued with times of trouble, but you need not fear, I have triumphed over this corrupt world order. Don’t run from toughened hardships James tells us. Don’t run from toughened hardships brothers and sisters. As difficult as they are you will ultimately find joy in them. If you embrace them your faith will blossom under pressure and teach you true patients as you endure. And true patients brought on by endurance will equip you to complete the long journey and cross the finish line mature, complete, wanting nothing. If you don’t have all the wisdom needed for this journey, then all you have to do is ask God for it and God will grant all that you need. He gives lavishly and never scolds you for asking. Jesus said, in this world you will be plagued with times of trouble, but you need not fear. I have overcome the world…

Hello this is Rachel from Pennsylvania. Dear God, I want to thank You for everything You have done for us and given us. I just praise You and I want to thank You for the hard times and the trials that You’re sending our way that is helping us to grow and become closer to You. I…I just pray that You strengthen us in our thoughts in our minds in our hearts so that we can put our faith in You and move every day step-by-step in faith with You. Help us to just give all of our worries and our problems over to You and…and know and be confident that You’re going to take care of us, that You’re going to provide for us, that You’re going to give us our next meal that…that we need to survive and that You’re going to come through financially if we need it, You know, for shelter and, You know, that You will always fulfill our needs if we…if we put our faith in You. So, I just pray for strength and guidance and wisdom for us who are struggling. And I just pray that You protect our minds and protect our families. Help us to be able to get along with…with each other and…and help each other out go out of our way just please help us to come together and support each other through these hard times that…

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Thursday April 2, 2020 (NIV)

Deuteronomy 21-22

Atonement for an Unsolved Murder

21 If someone is found slain, lying in a field in the land the Lord your God is giving you to possess, and it is not known who the killer was,(A) your elders and judges shall go out and measure the distance from the body to the neighboring towns. Then the elders of the town nearest the body shall take a heifer that has never been worked and has never worn a yoke(B) and lead it down to a valley that has not been plowed or planted and where there is a flowing stream. There in the valley they are to break the heifer’s neck. The Levitical priests shall step forward, for the Lord your God has chosen them to minister and to pronounce blessings(C) in the name of the Lord and to decide all cases of dispute and assault.(D) Then all the elders of the town nearest the body shall wash their hands(E) over the heifer whose neck was broken in the valley, and they shall declare: “Our hands did not shed this blood, nor did our eyes see it done. Accept this atonement for your people Israel, whom you have redeemed, Lord, and do not hold your people guilty of the blood of an innocent person.” Then the bloodshed will be atoned for,(F) and you will have purged(G) from yourselves the guilt of shedding innocent blood, since you have done what is right in the eyes of the Lord.

Marrying a Captive Woman

10 When you go to war against your enemies and the Lord your God delivers them into your hands(H) and you take captives,(I) 11 if you notice among the captives a beautiful(J) woman and are attracted to her,(K) you may take her as your wife. 12 Bring her into your home and have her shave her head,(L) trim her nails 13 and put aside the clothes she was wearing when captured. After she has lived in your house and mourned her father and mother for a full month,(M) then you may go to her and be her husband and she shall be your wife. 14 If you are not pleased with her, let her go wherever she wishes. You must not sell her or treat her as a slave, since you have dishonored her.(N)

The Right of the Firstborn

15 If a man has two wives,(O) and he loves one but not the other, and both bear him sons but the firstborn is the son of the wife he does not love,(P) 16 when he wills his property to his sons, he must not give the rights of the firstborn to the son of the wife he loves in preference to his actual firstborn, the son of the wife he does not love.(Q) 17 He must acknowledge the son of his unloved wife as the firstborn by giving him a double(R) share of all he has. That son is the first sign of his father’s strength.(S) The right of the firstborn belongs to him.(T)

A Rebellious Son

18 If someone has a stubborn and rebellious(U) son(V) who does not obey his father and mother(W) and will not listen to them when they discipline him, 19 his father and mother shall take hold of him and bring him to the elders at the gate of his town. 20 They shall say to the elders, “This son of ours is stubborn and rebellious. He will not obey us. He is a glutton and a drunkard.” 21 Then all the men of his town are to stone him to death.(X) You must purge the evil(Y) from among you. All Israel will hear of it and be afraid.(Z)

Various Laws

22 If someone guilty of a capital offense(AA) is put to death and their body is exposed on a pole, 23 you must not leave the body hanging on the pole overnight.(AB) Be sure to bury(AC) it that same day, because anyone who is hung on a pole is under God’s curse.(AD) You must not desecrate(AE) the land the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance.

22 If you see your fellow Israelite’s ox or sheep straying, do not ignore it but be sure to take it back to its owner.(AF) If they do not live near you or if you do not know who owns it, take it home with you and keep it until they come looking for it. Then give it back. Do the same if you find their donkey or cloak or anything else they have lost. Do not ignore it.

If you see your fellow Israelite’s donkey(AG) or ox fallen on the road, do not ignore it. Help the owner get it to its feet.(AH)

A woman must not wear men’s clothing, nor a man wear women’s clothing, for the Lord your God detests anyone who does this.

If you come across a bird’s nest beside the road, either in a tree or on the ground, and the mother is sitting on the young or on the eggs, do not take the mother with the young.(AI) You may take the young, but be sure to let the mother go,(AJ) so that it may go well with you and you may have a long life.(AK)

When you build a new house, make a parapet around your roof so that you may not bring the guilt of bloodshed on your house if someone falls from the roof.(AL)

Do not plant two kinds of seed in your vineyard;(AM) if you do, not only the crops you plant but also the fruit of the vineyard will be defiled.[a]

10 Do not plow with an ox and a donkey yoked together.(AN)

11 Do not wear clothes of wool and linen woven together.(AO)

12 Make tassels on the four corners of the cloak you wear.(AP)

Marriage Violations

13 If a man takes a wife and, after sleeping with her(AQ), dislikes her 14 and slanders her and gives her a bad name, saying, “I married this woman, but when I approached her, I did not find proof of her virginity,” 15 then the young woman’s father and mother shall bring to the town elders at the gate(AR) proof that she was a virgin. 16 Her father will say to the elders, “I gave my daughter in marriage to this man, but he dislikes her. 17 Now he has slandered her and said, ‘I did not find your daughter to be a virgin.’ But here is the proof of my daughter’s virginity.” Then her parents shall display the cloth before the elders of the town, 18 and the elders(AS) shall take the man and punish him. 19 They shall fine him a hundred shekels[b] of silver and give them to the young woman’s father, because this man has given an Israelite virgin a bad name. She shall continue to be his wife; he must not divorce her as long as he lives.

20 If, however, the charge is true(AT) and no proof of the young woman’s virginity can be found, 21 she shall be brought to the door of her father’s house and there the men of her town shall stone her to death. She has done an outrageous thing(AU) in Israel by being promiscuous while still in her father’s house. You must purge the evil from among you.

22 If a man is found sleeping with another man’s wife, both the man who slept(AV) with her and the woman must die.(AW) You must purge the evil from Israel.

23 If a man happens to meet in a town a virgin pledged to be married and he sleeps with her, 24 you shall take both of them to the gate of that town and stone them to death—the young woman because she was in a town and did not scream for help, and the man because he violated another man’s wife. You must purge the evil from among you.(AX)

25 But if out in the country a man happens to meet a young woman pledged to be married and rapes her, only the man who has done this shall die. 26 Do nothing to the woman; she has committed no sin deserving death. This case is like that of someone who attacks and murders a neighbor, 27 for the man found the young woman out in the country, and though the betrothed woman screamed,(AY) there was no one to rescue her.

28 If a man happens to meet a virgin who is not pledged to be married and rapes her and they are discovered,(AZ) 29 he shall pay her father fifty shekels[c] of silver. He must marry the young woman, for he has violated her. He can never divorce her as long as he lives.

30 A man is not to marry his father’s wife; he must not dishonor his father’s bed.[d](BA)

Luke 9:51-10:12

Samaritan Opposition

51 As the time approached for him to be taken up to heaven,(A) Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem.(B) 52 And he sent messengers on ahead, who went into a Samaritan(C) village to get things ready for him; 53 but the people there did not welcome him, because he was heading for Jerusalem. 54 When the disciples James and John(D) saw this, they asked, “Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven to destroy them[a]?”(E) 55 But Jesus turned and rebuked them. 56 Then he and his disciples went to another village.

The Cost of Following Jesus(F)

57 As they were walking along the road,(G) a man said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.”

58 Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man(H) has no place to lay his head.”

59 He said to another man, “Follow me.”(I)

But he replied, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.”

60 Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God.”(J)

61 Still another said, “I will follow you, Lord; but first let me go back and say goodbye to my family.”(K)

62 Jesus replied, “No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.”

Jesus Sends Out the Seventy-Two(L)(M)(N)

10 After this the Lord(O) appointed seventy-two[b] others(P) and sent them two by two(Q) ahead of him to every town and place where he was about to go.(R) He told them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.(S) Go! I am sending you out like lambs among wolves.(T) Do not take a purse or bag or sandals; and do not greet anyone on the road.

“When you enter a house, first say, ‘Peace to this house.’ If someone who promotes peace is there, your peace will rest on them; if not, it will return to you. Stay there, eating and drinking whatever they give you, for the worker deserves his wages.(U) Do not move around from house to house.

“When you enter a town and are welcomed, eat what is offered to you.(V) Heal the sick who are there and tell them, ‘The kingdom of God(W) has come near to you.’ 10 But when you enter a town and are not welcomed, go into its streets and say, 11 ‘Even the dust of your town we wipe from our feet as a warning to you.(X) Yet be sure of this: The kingdom of God has come near.’(Y) 12 I tell you, it will be more bearable on that day for Sodom(Z) than for that town.(AA)

Psalm 74

Psalm 74

A maskil[a] of Asaph.

O God, why have you rejected(A) us forever?(B)
Why does your anger smolder against the sheep of your pasture?(C)
Remember the nation you purchased(D) long ago,(E)
the people of your inheritance,(F) whom you redeemed(G)
Mount Zion,(H) where you dwelt.(I)
Turn your steps toward these everlasting ruins,(J)
all this destruction the enemy has brought on the sanctuary.

Your foes roared(K) in the place where you met with us;
they set up their standards(L) as signs.
They behaved like men wielding axes
to cut through a thicket of trees.(M)
They smashed all the carved(N) paneling
with their axes and hatchets.
They burned your sanctuary to the ground;
they defiled(O) the dwelling place(P) of your Name.(Q)
They said in their hearts, “We will crush(R) them completely!”
They burned(S) every place where God was worshiped in the land.

We are given no signs from God;(T)
no prophets(U) are left,
and none of us knows how long this will be.
10 How long(V) will the enemy mock(W) you, God?
Will the foe revile(X) your name forever?
11 Why do you hold back your hand, your right hand?(Y)
Take it from the folds of your garment(Z) and destroy them!

12 But God is my King(AA) from long ago;
he brings salvation(AB) on the earth.

13 It was you who split open the sea(AC) by your power;
you broke the heads of the monster(AD) in the waters.
14 It was you who crushed the heads of Leviathan(AE)
and gave it as food to the creatures of the desert.(AF)
15 It was you who opened up springs(AG) and streams;
you dried up(AH) the ever-flowing rivers.
16 The day is yours, and yours also the night;
you established the sun and moon.(AI)
17 It was you who set all the boundaries(AJ) of the earth;
you made both summer and winter.(AK)

18 Remember how the enemy has mocked you, Lord,
how foolish people(AL) have reviled your name.
19 Do not hand over the life of your dove(AM) to wild beasts;
do not forget the lives of your afflicted(AN) people forever.
20 Have regard for your covenant,(AO)
because haunts of violence fill the dark places(AP) of the land.
21 Do not let the oppressed(AQ) retreat in disgrace;
may the poor and needy(AR) praise your name.
22 Rise up,(AS) O God, and defend your cause;
remember how fools(AT) mock you all day long.
23 Do not ignore the clamor(AU) of your adversaries,(AV)
the uproar(AW) of your enemies,(AX) which rises continually.

Deuteronomy 21:1-22:30, Luke 9:51-10:12, Psalms 74:1-23, Proverbs 12:11

Today is the 2nd day of April welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I’m Brian it’s great to be here with you, to be back here with you. It was a fun to go over and spend some time in Daily Audio Bible Chronological and have China kinda come over here and spend some time in Daily Audio Bible yesterday as we mark th April 1st…we just do these…all kinds of little jokes for April Fools’ Day, but kinda just was switched over, switched it up. It’s nice to have time to visit. And, so, it’s good to be back with you today, back into the rhythm that we have here at Daily Audio Bible. It’s fun to be over there in the book of Judges as they’re moving through chronologically. Here we are moving through the book of Deuteronomy, the last things this Moses has to say. And we’re trying to give it the gravity, even though we’re kind of reviewing some of the laws and some of the different statutes and some of the history, some of the things that we traveled through. Deuteronomy is giving us the opportunity to review that, which is actually really helpful because it’s really important. All the culture and how it formed is the backdrop for Jesus understanding when He comes into the world and the things He’s talking about. So, us understanding this back story is irreplaceable. So, today we’ll pick up where we left off yesterday. We’re reading from the New International Version this week. Today, Deuteronomy chapters 21 and 22.

Commentary:

Okay. On a number of occasions, throughout this entire year so far we’ve been noticing Jesus talk about eyes to see and ears to hear and trying to press into that, especially in this year of vision and vision to see the kingdom at work because that’s what Jesus was describing in His ministry, a kingdom that was at work in and among us now sown in as a crop among weeds like all growing up together, here and now. So, when He says, for I…for those who have eyes to see, He’s saying, “if you would wake up and see this.” If you have ears to hear this, “then essentially you would realize that the way this world was designed wasn’t supposed to be dog eat dog. It wasn’t supposed to be this…where everything you accumulate isn’t something you have to protect, where you’re further pulled into isolation away, where you live in a world of “I” and “me” and “mine.” Jesus was saying, “like there’s a completely different way of being in this world, a way that you were created to be in this world, one where you are in union with God, and you realize what else do you need, what else do you lack after that.” And, so, we can all get on board with that say, “yes, yes and amen. Like, that’s what I want to be a part of. That’s what I am a part of.” But normally how we translate that is that we will be children of the light and…and we will do good in this world and everything will go well. And Jesus continually, including in our reading today, said that’s not exactly how it’s gonna work. You’re bringing light into the darkness and the darkness doesn’t comprehend it and the darkness doesn’t want light because that light will expose what is hidden in the darkness. And when happens, when this exposure happens, well then that which is hidden, that wants to remain hidden is going to fight against the light which is gonna bring marginalization and even persecution. And Jesus is clear in instructing us on this. And, so it…like we should get our minds around it. He’s saying, “I’m sending you like lambs among wolves.” And He’s also saying like, “anybody who starts this journey and then finds out it’s gonna be hard and turns back isn’t worthy of the kingdom.” It’s a much more sobering reality than we often pay attention to but all we have to do is watch Jesus in the Gospels to see it playing out vividly, wight? So, Jesus is revealing the kingdom to a human family that was so disoriented from its created place, how it was made to be, that it's…it doesn’t even recognize itself. And, I mean like the most poignant way to see this is the cross. God’s creation, not realizing that God was among them, and doing everything possible to do away with God, that’s how backwards things had gotten, that’s how backward things are. The harvest is still ripe. The laborers are still few. And, as we will learn as we continue our journey through the Scriptures, this bringing light into the darkness boils down to one word, “endure, endurance”. When we keep the light burning from within and we endure the onslaughts of the darkness to…to stifle it, to put it out, when we remain, then we are a witness of God’s kingdom in this world not only in what we say but in who we are. We are bearing witness to the fact that God is at work in this world through His people. That’s us. So, we’re going to face opposition on this path. But so often when we face ridicule or some type of something that feels like persecution, we might respond by putting out our own light and perpetuating the darkness by striking back with the same dark tactics that are being used against us. And all you’ve gotta do is just troll around the Internet a little bit to find that in action continually. Jesus instructions to these 72 people that he sent out today was, “be the light, endure, announce the kingdom. If it’s not received than simply say the kingdom was here, it was here for you and then shake the dust and move on.” And this sounds remarkably like the voice of wisdom that we’re getting to know as we move through the Proverbs this year. At every crossroads, there is the right choice. At every turning point there is wisdom for the next step if we have eyes to see, if we are awake, if we are paying attention.

Prayer:

Father, we invite you into that because it really does touch some deep things. Like, if we will sit and think about how our responses, like how we respond to people in any given situation throughout this day, if we would just observe ourselves, we would catch ourselves, we would see the things that pull us into perpetuating the darkness and we invite your Holy Spirit into those triggers, into those things. Help us to remain true and bring the light into dark situations. Help us to be a witness for your kingdom in this world today. And we ask this in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Announcements:

dailyaudiobible.com is the website and that is home, especially for a virtual community. And it’s good that we have this home right now. It’s good that the Global Campfire continues to burn. I am, at least personally speaking, so, so, so grateful for you, so grateful like that this image in my mind of this campfire burning and the word of God being open and we just kind of come in and I can see us in the firelight. I just…to have that mental image, to know that we are still here together in crazy times, that is, that means the world to me. So, I’m so grateful for our community and that our community is virtual and that all over the world no matter what we’re facing, we have each other. Thank God.

So, over the last week I guess it’s been now, we’ve been releasing each day like soul care around the Global Campfire for the times that we’re in. And, so, we’ve been releasing a chapter a day of the book Sneezing Jesus, the…the audio edition of Sneezing Jesus. And yesterday…so China and I were like switching spots, but we still released a chapter yesterday. It was called “Open It Up” and it…this explored the resurrection of Lazarus and applied it into our own lives and our own hearts. And now we…we just have today and two more days before we will conclude Sneezing Jesus. And now we’re kind of turning our attention into Jesus last days. And today’s chapter is centered around the fact that Jesus…Jesus at His Last Supper…like one of the last acts of freedom before He was arrested was to get down on His knees and wash the feet of His disciples and to give them a vivid image of what life is supposed to look like the posture that we’re supposed to have toward one another. And, wow, I am finding such poignant, in my own words, like I’m speaking back to my own self as I kind of go back through this book again. And I am just finding like these things to be considered and to be put into practice no matter what time it is. But in times like these wow it…it is so poignant for us to not lose sight of what the gospel means and how it is supposed to transform our hearts and our worldview and our actions toward one another. And, so, that today’s chapter is called Rinse. So, be sure to check that out.

If you want to partner with the Daily Audio Bible, then thank you. It takes all of us to keep logs on the Global Campfire so that it burns bright. And, so, thank you so deeply, so humbly for your partnership. There’s a link on the homepage at dailyaudiobible.com. If you’re using the Daily Audio Bible app, you can press the Give button in the upper right-hand corner, or if you prefer the mail, the mailing address is PO Box 1996 Spring Hill Tennessee 37174.

Deuteronomy 18:1-20:20, Luke 9:28-50, Psalms 73:1-28, Proverbs 12:10

Welcome to Daily Audio Bible I’m China today is the 1st day of April. Welcome. It is so great to be here with you guys today. Today we continue to keep the tradition alive between me and my dad. We swapped podcasts. So, if you are unfamiliar with my voice, I am the host of the Daily Audio Bible Chronological podcast. So, this is a little different. It’s been the April fool’s tradition to…to either reada like a different reading plan or a different translation. And, so, we continue that on this year by swapping podcasts. So, thank you for welcoming me into your space and listening today. Guys we’re in April. Welcome to April. Me and my husband Ben, we joked about March feeling like the longest year ever. March felt like it was never gonna end but here we are. Today we will be reading from Deuteronomy 18-20, Luke 9:28-50, Psalms 73, Proverbs 12: and we will be in the New International Version.

Commentary:

I really love at the Psalms are saying and I really love that it’s coming from this place of honesty, in this place that is just being vulnerable and being real with yourself and saying, “yeah, like I have almost fallen off. I have envied those who are wicked and they’re doing good. That sucks. I don’t understand that. Why should I continue to keep doing good?” So, while I can appreciate the honesty of that I think we can all agree to some degree that there’s a little immaturity that comes in that and just understanding that like that’s not the way of health. Like if you’ve seen the wicked in prosperity that is like, can we go back to elementary story time where we’re talking about the three little pigs and how they’re building their houses and how two thirds of the pigs are building their houses out of things that clearly aren’t gonna work and there’s that one pig who’s like, “this is gonna be solid, this is gonna be great.” Like that is ultimately like the picture that’s been painted here. And as we continue in this Psalm, as we continue to read on it, we see a little bit more of maturity kind of happen. like this, “ah ha. A wait…they’re not gonna see the glory of the Lord and the way that I can when my eyes are focused upon you Lord.” I love that it says, “my heart was grieved, and my Spirit was embittered. I was senseless and ignorant.” That’s like being aware of your hearty posture. And then coming and saying, “I’m always with you. You hold me by my right hand. You guide me with your counsel and afterward you will take me into glory. Who have I in heaven but you?” So, there’s just this awakening moment where we’re realizing the most important thing is to be kingdom minded. The most important thing here is to keep our eyes upon you Lord.

Prayer:

Father, we repent for our eyes being on anything other than You. Lord we repent for questioning the ways of how other people got to where they are as if there hasn’t been a struggle or as if there hasn’t been any adversary and where they’ve gotten. And Lord we just choose to keep our eyes on You. And Lord, whether we have to keep declaring that every single day or every single hour, Lord we keep our eyes on You. We’re not concerned with what’s happening to the right or to the left of us because we are fixated upon You. And I thank You that goodness and mercy come in that. I thank You that when we are fixated upon You, we think about what is lovely, what is just, what is admirable. And I thank You that all of things are the transforming and renewing of our mind as we speak that over ourselves today and forever more. And it’s in Your name we pray. Amen.

Announcements:

dailyaudiobible.com is our website. That is where you can see what’s happening in the community, how you can get connected and stay connected, especially in this time where, you know, we’re all social distancing and staying at home. Just continue to encourage you to plug in.

And if you haven’t really been plugged in regardless of how long you’ve been here, I just encourage you. What is your heart need in community? And we have formats specifically with the heart intention to do things together. So, it’s like we…we are set. The Daily Audio Bible is like, “Yes!” This has been our heart mission for years now, is that we would do things together. And, so, if you are needing that connection, I just encourage you to plug in here in this community, here with your brothers and sisters in the faith that are listening all over the world.

Well guys, this was fun. This was different to read, a different reading plan, to switch that up but I so enjoyed it and I thank you for, you know, letting me read for you today and switching it up. I know it’s not my dad but hope I didn’t do him any disservice and that you are satisfied with today’s reading. But welcome to April guys. It’s gonna be a good month. Regardless of how last month went this can be completely different. One of my favorite sayings that I like to live by is, “how we end one season is how we will enter the next.” So, may we leave well and start well.

That is all for today. I’m China I love you and Brian will be waiting for you here tomorrow.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hey, my outstanding DABC fam this is Kingdom Seeker Daniel from Chicago. Wow, China Brown. So, as I was just kind of looking back over the last week and a half or so I found it very, very interesting and refreshing that God was encouraging Joshua how to not fear. So, for example on the 12th He told, God told Joshua that wherever you go the Lord will fight on your side and to not be afraid. And then on the 13th He said, don’t fret, don’t fear. On the 25th he said don’t ever be afraid or discouraged. And then China you came along on the 28th today and you encouraged us with something absolutely profound that I think deserves a second hearing. So, family, this is what China said. “Instead of staying in the heart posture of continual questioning lets really dive into the place of saying, Lord I know this is who you are because this is who you’ve been so consistently and faithfully.” And then she said, “let’s enter into a space of remembering who the Lord is and where He’s brought you from.” So, in essence let’s remember that during this difficult time. God is with you. Don’t be afraid.

Hey DABC family this is Molly in Ohio and I felt really convicted today to call in and just say a prayer over everybody as we go through this pandemic. Father, thank You. Thank You for Your love and Your grace and Your provision. We may be scared and stressed and uncertain with what’s going on right now with the COVID-19 virus, but the virus can’t take You from our heart and we put our lives in Your hand as always. Lord You have a plan for this pandemic, and I know that You’ll use it to test and grow Your kingdom and Your children. I pray that as we walk through this we walk by faith and You and trust You for all our cares. Thank You for this family, this community You’ve given us and thank You for the blessings these restructurings are showing us in our lives. I ask for Your hand of protection over each and every one of my brothers and sisters listening especially the healthcare personnel who are on the front lines and those in ministry who are being bombarded with the fear of Your children. Let’s remember through this of who of…who You want us to be and let us show You through our interactions with others. Amen. And if you guys could also pray for my sister Jenny. She had to have a leg amputated last week due to infection from diabetes. She is in pain physically and mentally __ to heal and adjust to a new way of her life. I don’t know if she’s a believer. So, pray for her all around and pray that I can be the light of Christ in her dark situation right now. Thanks. Stay safe and healthy…
