1 Kings 5:1-6:38, Acts 7:1-29, Psalms 127:1-5, Proverbs 16:28-30

Today is the 9th day of June. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian. It is a pleasure and an honor to be here with you today as we get ready to close the books on another week. And we’ve been reading from the Amplified Bible this week, which is what we will continue to do today. We are following the story of King Solomon as we go through the Old Testament portion of 1 Kings. And we have just seen a blip on the radar of this man named Stephen, who we’re going to get to know a little bit in the book of Acts. But first, 1 Kings chapter 5 and chapter 6 today.

Commentary:

Okay. So, we have heard of the temple of God in Jerusalem probably for a very, very long time. Today in our reading from 1 Kings, that temple is first built. Prior to this, there was no temple. There was only a tabernacle, more of a tent temple if you will. And this is how God had chosen to be among His people. If we’ll remember all of this from the time of Moses, the temple was in the center of the camp and all of the different tribes had spread out from there. God was literally dwelling with his people in the middle of their society. And it was portable and it was movable so that the people would follow wherever God led. Now a temple has been erected that is a permanent place in Jerusalem. And as we will see, this brings an incredible amount of stability to the people.

Now when we get to the book of Acts, Stephen is being questioned and he has begun to tell the story of the Hebrew people. This is in his defense because he’s basically being accused of perverting that story. So, he’s just simply telling the story to the council so that he can show that he knows how the story goes and that he actually is a Hebrew person. And, so, right up until the time that he gets to Jesus we will be reviewing the territory that we have covered this year so far in the Bible, in the Old Testament. But one of the things that Stephen is accused of is Jesus’ declaration about tearing down the temple and then building it back in three days. Now that temple, the temple in Stephen’s time, the temple in Jesus’ time, is a different temple than the one Solomon built today. The one Solomon built today is what would be referred to now as the first temple. So, the first temple period or era. Eventually, Solomon’s temple gets destroyed. And we’ll get to that story soon enough. And then it is rebuilt over time and then it is really rebuilt in the time of Herod the Great, which would fall in time just a bit before Jesus’ birth. So, we’ll get to all that, but let’s just continue to listen to Stephen tell the story that we’ve gone through as that story reaches its culmination. And then we’ll continue to watch Solomon. Now there’s a temple in Jerusalem and there’s gonna be a great celebration and we’ll continue with his reign.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for another week in Your Word. We thank You for all the things that You’ve spoken to us. Sometimes You speak deep into our hearts and reveal things that we must change and repent of. Sometimes the story gets carried forward and we see how things are linked together. Always You are inviting us to take the next step forward in relationship with You, and that is what we continually choose to do and Your Word guides our steps. So, come Holy Spirit, we pray.  Plant the words of the Scriptures in our lives and change us through them, we ask in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hi family. I’m calling…I need your help. I have been listening to the DAB for almost since the beginning. And recently I’ve been hearing a lot of prayers with women calling in about their husbands, which has given me a little bit more courage to call in. I used to call in on a regular basis but I kind of stopped but I do pray for everybody. I’m in trouble with my marriage. My husband has recently retired and he did allow me to retire. He was a doctor. So, we can afford for me to retire. I had a laborious job that’s really…I was just exhausted all of the time. So, he did allow me to retire. And I’m only 61. So, I’m very grateful and thankful for that. But being a doctor, he is very controlling, and he has three nurses that they just did everything that he wanted them to do. And now it’s turned out to be me. And I apologize if I hang up quickly because he might commend. But I’ve started drinking a lot. Nobody knows about it, but I am…I am so sad. I cry every day. I just do what he says. I can’t talk back to him. I can’t stand up. My sister asked me why I can’t stand up on my own two feet. But he always manages to turn everything around back to me. I need your help. I need your prayers. Please, I love you. Please help me. I don’t want to do. I pray. I pray every day. I just need your help family. I love you. I love you so much. Thank you, Brian, thank you Jill for all you do.

Hello DAB family. Hello Brian and family. I guess you can call me __ would be my name. I’ve been listening to DAB for, it’s going on at least 5 to 6 years or so, right? But this is my first time calling. I would just like prayer. I’m a single mother but I don’t feel a lot of joy in that. I just feel like everything that I enjoyed I can no longer enjoy. I mean, even the work that I used to do, traveling, and training, and technical work, I can’t do that anymore. So, my life completely started over. __ over the years. And my prayer is __. So, my prayer request for the community is family. I’m not finding that in my church, even though __ several years __ five years committed to the same church. It just seems like, sermons is…is pretty much not a requirement __. I want to life. I want to life. I want something different. I’m not happy with my job. __ the basis of my life __ and managing the house. And that’s where I am. And that’s what I want prayer for. __ thank you all. Have a good week.

Hello friends. Hey, this is Annette Allison. I love you guys. Hey, would you guys pray for my friend David at work? Tell you what. This guy, he handed it to me. You know what I’m saying? So, I get this new guy in my shop and he’s kind of overweight and kind of old and kind of sweaty and kind of reminds me of the dog named Lucky, missing a few teeth. All he did was that there and sweat. And it’s like, he was quiet, and he never talked to anybody. And I was like, what’s up with this guy? I was kinda busy with my project and I didn’t get the chance to know him. And, well, I’ve changed locations and I got sat next to David and pretty soon I got to know him and I got to figure out what an amazingly intelligent, smart, funny, he is hilarious, and he is so smart, and I have learned so much from him, including how not to judge a book by its cover. Awe….I failed. I had to ask forgiveness. I kid you not…in that, I asked for God to show me people as He sees them not as we see them. Awe…so…I did learn a lesson out of this. But my friend David is very sick. He’s in the hospital. He’s in ICU. He’s been fighting pulmonary obstructions and I think that maybe he has one in his lung. But he came to work and he fell out from low blood pressure. And would you guys please pray for him? And we are all really worried because, you know, because we kind of fell in love with them, you know? And, you know, I just don’t want to see him go out like this. So, would you all please pray for my friend David? And…

Hi family. This is Jeanette from Charlotte. This is my first time calling in and like so many of you, I have been listening and pray along with you all for quite a while now. I want to ask for prayer for my husband Vince. He has Parkinson’s disease and his symptoms have progressed to the point that he’s going to have brain surgery called the brain simulation. This surgery happens in three stages, the first of which will be on June the 5th, when they place 4 screws called fiducial’s under his scalp to serve as markers. The second phase happens on June 13th. This is the most invasive part of the process, where they drill holes in his skull and place electrodes into his brain. The last stage happens on June 25th when they place of battery pack on his chest, kind of similar to what they do for a pacemaker. On July 10th they will actually turn it on for the first time and we’ll find out how it works for him. Vince has been struggling so much. We have been asking God to heal him since he was diagnosed in 2008. We realize that God uses everything in our lives to draw us closer to Him. So, would you please pray that, number one, we will draw still closer to God through this process and that God will accomplish what He desires in our lives? Number two, would you please pray for an extraordinarily successful outcome, so that Vince can regain a good quality of life and that he would be able to do things again? We really want God to be glorified above all else. Vince and I love and appreciate you, family. Thanks for your prayers.

1 Kings 5-6

Alliance with King Hiram

Hiram king of Tyre sent his servants to Solomon when he heard that they had anointed him king in place of his father, for Hiram had always been a friend of David. Then Solomon sent word to Hiram, saying, “You know that David my father could not build a house (temple) for the Name (Presence) of the Lord his God because of the wars which surrounded him, until the Lord put his enemies under his feet.(A) But now that the Lord my God has given me rest [from war] on every side, there is neither adversary nor misfortune [confronting me]. Behold, I intend to build a house (temple) to the Name of the Lord my God, just as the Lord said to my father David: ‘Your son whom I will put on your throne in your place shall build the house for My Name and Presence.’ So now, command that they cut cedar trees from Lebanon for me, and my servants will join your servants, and I will give you whatever wages you set for your servants. For you know that there is no one among us who knows how to cut timber like the men of Sidon.”

When Hiram heard the words of Solomon, he rejoiced greatly and said, “Blessed be the Lord this day, who has given David a wise son [to be king] over this great people.” So Hiram sent word to Solomon, saying, “I have heard the message which you sent to me; I will do everything you wish concerning the cedar and cypress timber. My servants will bring the logs down from Lebanon to the [Mediterranean] sea, and I will have them made into rafts to go by sea to the place (port) that you direct me; then I will have them broken up there, and you shall carry them away. Then you shall [a]return the favor by providing food for my household.” 10 So Hiram gave Solomon all the cedar and cypress timber he desired, 11 and Solomon gave Hiram 20,000 [b]kors of wheat as food for his household, and 20 kors of pure [olive] oil. Solomon gave all these to Hiram each year. 12 The Lord gave Solomon wisdom, just as He promised him; and there was peace between Hiram and Solomon, and the two of them made a treaty.

Conscription of Laborers

13 King Solomon levied forced laborers from all Israel; and the forced laborers numbered 30,000 men. 14 He sent them to Lebanon, 10,000 a month in shifts; one month they were in Lebanon and two months at home. Adoniram was in charge of the forced laborers. 15 Solomon had 70,000 burden bearers (transporters) and 80,000 stonemasons in the hill country [of Judah], 16 besides Solomon’s 3,300 chief deputies who were in charge of the project and who were in charge of the people doing the work. 17 The king gave orders, and they quarried great [c]stones, valuable stones, to lay the foundation of the house (temple) with cut stones. 18 So Solomon’s builders and Hiram’s builders and the men of [d]Gebal cut and chiseled the stones, and prepared the timber and the stones to build the house (temple).

The Building of the Temple

[e]Now it came about in the four hundred and eightieth year after the Israelites came out of the land of Egypt, in the fourth year of Solomon’s reign over Israel, in the month of Ziv (April-May) which is the second month, that he began to build the Lord’s house (temple). The length of the house which King Solomon built for the Lord was [f]sixty cubits (90 ft.), its width twenty (30 ft.), and its height thirty cubits (45 ft.). The porch in front of the main room of the house (temple) was twenty cubits long, corresponding to the width of the house, and its depth in front of the house was ten cubits. He also made framed (artistic) window openings for the house. Against the wall of the house he built [g]extensions around the walls of the house, around both the main room (Holy Place) and the [h]Holy of Holies; and he made side chambers all around. The lowest story was five cubits wide, the middle was six cubits wide, and the third was seven cubits wide; for he made offsets (niches) in the walls all around on the outside of the house so that the supporting beams would not be inserted into the walls of the house.

While it was being built, the house was built of stone prepared and finished (precut) at the quarry, and no hammer, axe, or iron tool of any kind was heard in the house while it was under construction.

The entrance to the lowest side chamber was on the right [or south] side of the house; and they would go up winding stairs to the middle [level], and from the middle to the third. So Solomon built the house (temple) and finished it, and roofed the house with beams and boards of cedar. 10 Then he built the extensions [of rooms] against the entire house, each [story] five cubits high; and they were attached to the house with timbers of cedar.

11 Now the word of the Lord came to Solomon, saying, 12 Concerning this house which you are building, if you will walk in My statutes and execute My precepts and keep all My commandments by walking in them, then I will carry out My word (promises) with you which I made to David your father. 13 I will dwell among the sons (descendants) of Israel, and will not abandon My people Israel.”

14 So Solomon built the house (temple) and finished it. 15 He built the walls of the interior of the house [that is, the Holy Place and the Holy of Holies] with boards of cedar, from the floor of the house to the rafters of the ceiling. He overlaid the interior with wood, and he overlaid the floor of the house with boards of cypress. 16 He built twenty cubits on the rear of the house with boards of cedar from the floor to the ceiling; he built its interior as the [inner] sanctuary, the Holy of Holies. 17 The [rest of the] house, that is, the temple in front of the Holy of Holies, was forty cubits long. 18 The cedar on the house within had wood carvings in the shape of gourds and open flowers. Everything was cedar; no stone was visible. 19 Then he prepared the Holy of Holies within the house in order to put the ark of the covenant of the Lord there. 20 The Holy of Holies was twenty cubits in length, twenty cubits in width, and twenty cubits in height (a cube), and he overlaid it with pure gold. He also overlaid the cedar altar [with gold]. 21 Solomon overlaid the interior of the house with pure gold, and he drew [i]chains of gold across the front of the Holy of Holies (inner sanctuary), and he overlaid it with gold. 22 Then he overlaid the entire house with gold, until the whole house was finished. He also overlaid the entire [incense] altar which was by the Holy of Holies with gold.

23 Within the Holy of Holies he made two [j]cherubim (sculptured figures) of olive wood, each ten cubits high. 24 [k]One wing of the cherub was five cubits long, and the other wing was also five cubits long; it was ten cubits from the tip of one wing to the tip of the other. 25 The [wingspan of the] other cherub was also ten cubits. The measurements and cut (shape) of the two cherubim were the same; 26 the height of the one cherub was ten cubits, as was the other. 27 He put the cherubim [above the ark] inside the innermost room of the house, and their wings were spread out so that the wing of the one touched one wall, and the wing of the other cherub was touching the other wall; and their inner wings were touching [l]each other in the middle of the house. 28 Solomon also overlaid the cherubim with gold.

29 He carved all the walls of the house all around with carved engravings of cherubim, palm-shaped decorations, and open flowers, [both] the inner and the outer sanctuaries. 30 He overlaid the floor of the house with gold, [both] the inner and outer sanctuaries.

31 For the entrance of the Holy of Holies he made two [folding] doors of olive wood, the lintel (header above the door) and five-sided doorposts (frames). 32 So he made two doors of olive wood, and he carved on them carvings of cherubim, palm-shaped decorations, and open flowers; and overlaid them with gold; and he hammered out overlays of gold on the cherubim and palm decorations.

33 Also he made for the entrance of the [outer] sanctuary (the Holy Place) four-sided doorposts (frames) of olive wood 34 and two doors of cypress wood; the two leaves of the one door turned on pivots and were folding, and the two leaves of the other door also turned on pivots. 35 He carved cherubim, palm-shaped decorations, and open flowers on the doors, and overlaid them with gold evenly applied on the carved work. 36 He built the inner courtyard with three rows of cut stone and a row of cedar beams.

37 In the fourth year [of King Solomon’s reign] the foundation of the Lord’s house was laid, in the [second] month, Ziv (April-May). 38 In the eleventh year [of King Solomon’s reign] in the month of Bul (October-November), that is, the eighth month, the house was finished throughout all its parts and in accordance with all its specifications. So he built it in seven years.

  3. 1 Kings 5:17 These great foundation stones still exist. One of them is almost thirty-nine feet long; it is the chief cornerstone of the Dome of the Rock’s massive wall, placed in its present position 3,000 years ago. Markings on the stones represent the culture of Phoenicia, the region around Tyre from which Solomon received building materials for the temple.
  4. 1 Kings 5:18 A city in Lebanon, ancient Byblos.
  5. 1 Kings 6:1 This is a key verse in determining the date of the exodus of the Jews from Egypt. Since the fourth year of Solomon’s reign is believed to be 966 b.c., the date of the exodus was about 1446 b.c.
  6. 1 Kings 6:2 A cubit is about 18 inches.
  7. 1 Kings 6:5 The meaning is uncertain, perhaps additional rooms.

Acts 7:1-29

Stephen’s Defense

Now the [a]high priest asked [Stephen], “Are these charges true?”

And he answered, “Brothers and fathers, listen to me! The God of glory [the Shekinah, the radiance of God] appeared to our father Abraham when he was in Mesopotamia, before he lived in Haran,(A) and He said to him, ‘Leave your country and your relatives, and come to the land that I will show you.’(B) Then he left the land of the Chaldeans and settled in Haran. And from there, after his father died, God sent him to this country in which you now live.(C) But He did not give him inheritable property, not even enough ground to take a step on, yet He promised that He would give it to Him as a possession, and to his descendants after him.(D) And this is, in effect, what God spoke [to him]: That his descendants would be aliens (strangers) in a foreign land, and that they would be enslaved and mistreated for four hundred years. And I will judge any nation to whom they will be in bondage,’ said God, ‘and after that they will come out and serve Me [in worship] in this place.’(E) And God gave Abraham a covenant [a formal agreement to be strictly observed] of [which] circumcision [was the sign]; and so [under these circumstances] Abraham became the father of Isaac, and circumcised him on the eighth day; and Isaac [became the father] of [b]Jacob, and Jacob [became the father] of the [c]twelve patriarchs.(F)

“The [ten elder] patriarchs, overwhelmed with jealousy, sold [their younger brother] Joseph into [slavery in] Egypt; but God was with him,(G) 10 and He rescued him from all his suffering, and gave him favor and wisdom in the sight of Pharaoh, king of Egypt, and he made Joseph governor over Egypt and over his entire household.(H)

11 “Now a famine came over all Egypt and Canaan, bringing great distress and our fathers could not find food [for their households and livestock].(I) 12 But when Jacob heard that there was grain in Egypt, he sent our fathers there the first time.(J) 13 And on the second visit Joseph identified himself to his brothers, and Joseph’s family and background were revealed to Pharaoh.(K) 14 Then Joseph sent and invited Jacob his father and all his relatives to come to him, seventy-five persons in all.(L) 15 And Jacob (Israel) went down into Egypt, and [d]there he died, as did our fathers;(M) 16 and [from Egypt] [e]their bodies were taken back to Shechem and placed in the tomb which Abraham had purchased for a sum of money from the sons of Hamor in Shechem.(N)

17 “But as the time [for the fulfillment] of the promise which God had made to Abraham was approaching, the [Hebrew] people increased and multiplied in Egypt,(O) 18 until [the time when] there arose another king over egypt who did not know joseph [nor his history and the merit of his service to Egypt].(P) 19 He shrewdly exploited our race and mistreated our fathers, forcing them to expose their [male] babies so that they would die.(Q) 20 It was at this [critical] time that Moses was born; and he was lovely in the sight of God, and for three months he was nourished in his father’s house.(R) 21 Then when he was set outside [to die], Pharaoh’s daughter rescued him and claimed him for herself, and cared for him as her own son.(S) 22 So Moses was educated in all the wisdom and culture of the Egyptians, and he was a man of power in words and deeds. 23 But when he reached the age of forty, it came into his heart to visit his brothers, the sons of Israel. 24 And when he saw one [of them] being treated unfairly, he defended the oppressed man and avenged him by striking and killing the Egyptian. 25 He expected his countrymen to understand that God was granting them freedom through him [assuming that they would accept him], but they did not understand. 26 Then on the next day he suddenly appeared to two of them as they were fighting, and he tried to reconcile them, saying, ‘Men, you are brothers; why do you wrong one another?’ 27 But the man who was injuring his neighbor pushed Moses away, saying, ‘Who appointed you ruler and judge over us? 28 Do you intend to kill me as you killed the Egyptian yesterday?’ 29 At this remark Moses fled and became an exile in the land of Midian, where he fathered two sons.(T)

Psalm 127

Prosperity Comes from the Lord.

A Song of [a]Ascents. Of Solomon.

127 Unless the Lord builds the house,
They labor in vain who build it;
Unless the Lord guards the city,
The watchman keeps awake in vain.(A)

It is vain for you to rise early,
To retire late,
To eat the bread of anxious labors—
For He gives [blessings] to His beloved even in his sleep.

Behold, children are a heritage and gift from the Lord,
The fruit of the womb a reward.(B)

Like arrows in the hand of a warrior,
So are the children of one’s youth.

How blessed [happy and fortunate] is the man whose quiver is filled with them;
They will not be ashamed
When they speak with their enemies [in gatherings] at the [city] gate.

28
A perverse man spreads strife,
And one who gossips separates intimate friends.(A)
29
A violent and exceedingly covetous man entices his neighbor [to sin],
And leads him in a way that is not good.

1 Kings 3:3-4:34, Acts 6:1-15, Psalms 126:1-6, Proverbs 16:26-27

Today is the 8th day of June. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian and it is a pleasure and it is an honor to be here with you today, taking the next step forward. Today would’ve been my mom’s 76th birthday. Of course, it’s been about a year and half now since her passing in January of 2017 but for years and years she was with us as a listener every day and I would tell her, happy birthday. So, hard to break with that tradition. Happy birthday mom. So, we’re reading from the Amplified Bible this week and we’re just getting going into Solomon’s life. He has stepped into the role of his father. He is the king of Israel and he’s got a lot more on his plate then he was maybe prepared for. First Kings chapter 3 verse 3 through 4 verse 34 today.

Commentary:

Okay. So, in first Kings, just to catch us up, Solomon is firmly on the throne now, firmly on the throne. And we watched how that all happened. And it was not the prettiest transition. And we can see Solomon trying to settle into the authority of the king and realizing, man, this is not…there’s just a lot. And he went to God. He went to God and asked for wisdom. And in response, he got what he wanted and everything he could’ve needed and became known as the wisest man in the world. And we’ll watch that unfold. We were told that he had piece on every side and that he was respected but we’ll see the people journey to Solomon to hear his wisdom. And, actually, this is one of the most glorious times in the Bible. Like, we are at this point in the Old Testament where we have been following a story since Genesis, back in January when we met Abraham, we’ve been following this story all along. And Solomon, his reign is kind of the mountaintop, the apex of it all. So, we’re in a really good time where everything is moving in the right direction at least for a season. And, so, let’s enjoy that.

In the book of Acts, things are moving forward as well. The Holy Spirit is drawing people and people are flocking to this teaching around Jesus. But it’s also making those who were in power or had great influence jealous trying to figure out what to do about this. And today we saw the formation of what is now known as the diaconate, right? Deacons. And we’ll learn more about that as we move further into the New Testament, that these people who were appointed to make sure that the Windows are taking care of, people were looked after. So, for the first time we meet this man. His name is Stephen. And we’re going to follow his story for a little bit. But through Stephen’s story we’re going to be able to revisit all of the story that we’ve traveled with since January. And we’re just talking about how the story began with Abraham and moved its way forward all the way to Solomon. We get a review of that through Stephen in the coming days.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word. We thank You for Your immense kindness and patience with us. We thank You that Your love never fails even when we do. When ours does, we ask Your forgiveness for the ways in which we have stepped away from You or betrayed You. We are sorry. Your spirit is what gives us life. To, in any way, walk away from that is to walk away from life. Come, Holy Spirit, indwell us, fill us, guide us, and lead us forward deeper into Jesus we pray. In Jesus’ name we ask. Amen.

dailyaudiobible.com is the website, it’s home base, it’s where you find out what’s going on around here.

And we’ve been talking about the Daily Audio Bible family reunion that’s coming up here in the rolling hills of Tennessee September 1st and 2nd, which is Labor Day weekend for those of us in the United States. And it seems like you’re excited about it is much as we are. So, we’re gonna have a blast. It’s gonna be a great time indeed. These kinds of things, they come up. They’re a little bit bittersweet for me. It’s like… my mom…my mom…she was in very, very, very poor health but I’m pretty sure she’d of wanted to be at this. And I’m sure we would’ve brought her to this, oxygen tank and wheelchair and all. Yeah, she would’ve wanted to be there for dinner. She, yeah, yeah. So, it’s like a little bit of a bittersweet thing but I am very much looking forward to the family coming together, you know, kind of stepping out of the Internet and into life because it’s important to know that we’re not alone. So, this is gonna be great. And you’re gonna get to explore…to explore the rolling hills of Tennessee. There’s quite a bit to do in the Nashville area. It’s a thriving, booming area and we have prepared some adventures for you to consider, some things that you might want to see when you’re in the area as you explore. Maybe you’ll explore together with some new friends, or maybe you’re coming here and I you already have some friends, but there from somewhere else and you’re gonna meet up here. All that’s happening and it’s gonna be great. So, we’re looking for that. It’s September 1st and 2nd and you can register now. Registration is, it’s looking like it’s going to fill up. So, we’ll keep you posted. But there’s still room, there’s still time. So, plan to come in September to the Daily Audio Bible family reunion, the first of its kind ever. You can get all the details at dailyaudibible.com in the Initiatives section, which just means scroll down…scroll down on the homepage and you’ll find it or you can follow the navigation at the top. Click initiatives and you’ll find it there. Registration is $50 per person and that includes access to the grounds at Deer Run, where we’ll be holding the event. They have all kinds of stuff to do. It’s a huge place that’s just centered in the hills. And it’s like a look at the rolling hills up close. So, we’ll have two country dinners together as a community. We’ll have our evenings together where we’ll spend time talking, singing, playing, enjoying fellowship with one another for a couple of evenings. So we’re very, very much looking forward to that. Everything that’s on the Deer Run grounds, I mean access to the Deer Run grounds and all kinds of stuff to do is a part of that. So, you can just kind of camp out there if you want. There are still a few…all the cabins are sold out but there are some tent spaces left. There are the men and women’s bunkhouses, kind of dorms. There’s still some bunks left. Or you can find your own accommodations. We have put the closest ones, closest hotels. We’ve kind of gotten with them and gotten all situated there. So, those are all at the website. So, you can kind of see all that. If  you’re an RV’r, we’re showing you as well where you can go for full hookups. It’s a little bit of a hike, about 40 minutes to get the full hookups. But not that big of a deal. And right through the rolling hills of Tennessee. So, it's…you can do…you can come however you want to come and we’ll have a good time together. So, check it all out at dailyaudiobible.com in the Initiatives section - Daily Audio Bible Family Reunion. We’ll see you there.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Good morning Daily Audio Bible friends and community. This is Diane O. B. from Newburgh Indiana. Shalom, shalom. Nothing is missing and nothing is broken. It is 12:43 AM on Tuesday, June the 5th and I have a praise report and a prayer request. My praise report is that I did a sleep study and it turned out…I thought it turned out really well and then I heard…the lady called me and said it was about the same as the last one. But I had a real good time in the Lord and that made me very happy. My prayer request is, I haven’t been able to do so well in the last week with my exercise and diet for diabetes. And there’s something that Brian said, that comparing myself and always feeling like I failed. And Jesus said, what is that to you? Come and follow me. And I guess I have something where I have from my upbringing, if I’m not doing well, Jesus is not pleased with me. And I think that’s wrong thinking. But Jesus loves me and tells me to follow Him and I can just repent and get back, starting back, and pick myself up. If a righteous man falls…

Hello. This is my first time calling. And my name, when translated, is My God has Answered. And I am calling because I do need prayer. My children and I had been a military family for 10 years and our soldier went on three tours of duty and came back a completely different man. And the short story is that we have had to change identities after we were notified by state authorities that our lives were in danger. And it has been a very difficult 4 ½ years. We have gone through bouts of homelessness and not enough income and I’m just asking that…that anyone who has a heart to remember us in prayer, that God would restore us and that we could get in incredible testimony to his love and his power through Jesus Christ. And I just want to encourage Stephanie, who I just heard on the call, that God does not forget his children. He knows what you need.

Good morning family. This is Rachel in Houston and I know I haven’t called in a long time but the Holy Spirit just sort of slapped me in the back of the head. I’m a few days behind. And, Jamie, I just heard your message at the end of the May 30th podcast. And I really just want to share with you, just to seek God. And He says, seek ye first the kingdom of God and all things will be gathered unto you. And I pray…I’m praying for your heart. I pray that He will give you…He will give you that desire for Him because once you…once you experience that desire you will never ever, ever want to give it up. And I pray for your marriage. It’s a hard thing to have someone love you and not know how to…how to love them the way that they need to be loved. And I am praying that God will give you that peace to know sometimes we can’t love people the way that they need to be loved and they need something that we can provide them, that only God can provide to them. And so, don’t burn yourself for that. Just seek God in all things. And I love you girl and I am praying for you and I just want you to know that I will be…I will be seeking any wisdom that God will give me for you and I’ll be sharing that. I love you family and shout out to the women at the More Gathering. What an amazing event. Viv from Canada, I love you sister and I will talk to you all soon. Love you.

Good afternoon DAB family. I am calling about two prayer requests that I heard for June 4th. Today is June 5th. There were two gentlemen. One sounded so much, not his voice, but his petition, sounded so much like my brother who is struggling in his marriage the way his wife speaks to him, his reaction. He is needing a job. He’s been out of a job for six months. I have been praying and interceding. I’ve called before for him. And that call just got to me, that petition, because it just reminded me so much of my brother. And I just wanted to let you know brother, you didn’t give your name but God knows who you are and I am so, so standing in the gap for your marriage, for you asking for the Lord and for us to help you know how to answer your wife and not in anger, not to fight back as we humanly do. We get defensive and so we respond in the wrong way, but that you would be filled with wisdom and discernment and with love overall. And that God would just fill you with whatever you need. I know you don’t want to marriage to break apart. So, I will be praying for you wherever you are. For your wife to. We have to pray for her. And I know that you guys are praying for my brother, for his needs, for his marriage, and his situation with work. I mean for the other brother who was asking for prayer for his son who is making a very important decision that…

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Friday June 8, 2018 (NIV)

1 Kings 3:3-4:34

Now Solomon loved the Lord, walking [at first] in the statutes of David his father, except [for the fact that] he sacrificed and burned incense in the high places [ignoring the law that required all sacrifices to be offered at the tabernacle].(A) The king went to Gibeon [near Jerusalem, where the tabernacle and the bronze altar stood] to sacrifice there, for that was the great high place. Solomon offered a thousand burnt offerings on that altar. In Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream at night; and God said, “Ask [Me] what I shall give you.”

Solomon’s Prayer

Then Solomon said, “You have shown Your servant David my father great lovingkindness, because he walked before You in faithfulness and righteousness and with uprightness of heart toward You; and You have kept for him this great lovingkindness, in that You have given him a son to sit on his throne, as it is today. So now, O Lord my God, You have made Your servant king in place of David my father; and as for me, I am but a little boy [[a]in wisdom and experience]; I do not know how to go out or come in [that is, how to conduct business as a king]. Your servant is among Your people whom You have chosen, a great people who are too many to be numbered or counted. So give Your servant an understanding mind and a hearing heart [with which] to judge Your people, so that I may discern between good and evil. For who is able to judge and rule this great people of Yours?”(B)

God’s Answer

10 Now it pleased the Lord that Solomon had asked this thing. 11 God said to him, “Because you have asked this and have not asked for yourself a long life nor for wealth, nor for the lives of your enemies, but have asked for yourself understanding to recognize justice, 12 behold, I have done as you asked. I have given you a wise and discerning heart (mind), so that no one before you was your equal, nor shall anyone equal to you arise after you. 13 I have also given you what you have not asked, both wealth and honor, so that there will not be anyone equal to you among the kings, for all your days. 14 If you walk in My ways, keeping My statutes and My commandments, as your father David [b]did, then I will lengthen your days.”

15 Then Solomon awoke, and he realized that it was a dream. He came [back] to Jerusalem and stood before the ark of the covenant of the Lord; he offered burnt offerings and peace offerings, and he prepared a feast for all his servants.(C)

Solomon Wisely Judges

16 Then two women who were prostitutes came to the king and stood before him. 17 And the one woman said, “O my lord, this woman and I live in the same house; and I gave birth to a child while she was in the house. 18 And on the third day after I gave birth, this woman also gave birth. And we were [alone] together; no one else was with us in the house, just we two. 19 Now this woman’s son died during the night, because she lay on him [and smothered him]. 20 So she got up in the middle of the night and took my son from [his place] beside me while your maidservant was asleep, and laid him on her bosom, and laid her dead son on my bosom. 21 When I got up in the morning to nurse my son, behold, he was dead. But when I examined him carefully in the morning, behold, it was not my son, the one whom I had borne.” 22 Then the other woman said, “No! For my son is the one who is living, and your son is the dead one.” But the first woman said, “No! For your son is the dead one, and my son is the living one.” [This is how] they were speaking before the king.

23 Then the king said, “This woman says, ‘This is my son, the one who is alive, and your son is the dead one’; and the other woman says, ‘No! For your son is the dead one, and my son is the one who is alive.’” 24 Then the king said, “Bring me a sword.” So they brought a sword before the king. 25 Then the king said, “Cut the living child in two, and give half to the one [woman] and half to the other.” 26 Then the woman whose child was the living one spoke to the king, for she was deeply moved over her son, “O my lord, give her the living child, and by no means kill him.” But the other said, “He shall be neither mine nor yours; cut him!” 27 Then the king said, “Give the first woman [who is pleading for his life] the living child, and by no means kill him. She is his mother.” 28 When all [the people of] Israel heard about the judgment which the king had made, they [were in awe and reverently] feared the king, for they saw that the wisdom of God was within him to administer justice.

Solomon’s Officials

King Solomon was king over all [the people of] Israel. These were his [chief] officials: Azariah the [c]son of Zadok was the high priest; Elihoreph and Ahijah the sons of Shisha, were scribes; Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud was the recorder [of important events]; Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was in command of the army; Zadok and Abiathar were priests; Azariah the son of Nathan was in charge of the deputies; Zabud the son of Nathan was priest and was the king’s friend [and trusted advisor]; Ahishar was in charge of the household (palace); and Adoniram the son of Abda was in charge of the forced labor.

Solomon had twelve deputies over all Israel, who [d]secured provisions for the king and his household; each man had to provide for a month in the year. These were their names: Ben-hur, in the hill country of [the tribe of] Ephraim; Ben-deker in Makaz and Shaalbim and Beth-shemesh and Elon-beth-hanan; 10 Ben-hesed, in Arubboth (to him belonged Socoh and all the land of Hepher); 11 Ben-abinadab, in all the hills of Dor (Taphath, Solomon’s daughter, was his wife); 12 Baana the son of Ahilud, in Taanach, Megiddo, and all Beth-shean which is beside Zarethan below Jezreel, from Beth-shean to Abel-meholah as far as beyond Jokmeam; 13 Ben-geber, in Ramoth-gilead (the villages of Jair the son of Manasseh, which are in Gilead belonged to him, also the region of Argob, which is in Bashan, sixty great cities with walls and bronze bars); 14 Ahinadab the son of Iddo, in Mahanaim; 15 Ahimaaz, in [the tribe of] Naphtali (he also married Basemath, Solomon’s daughter); 16 Baana the son of Hushai, in [the tribe of] Asher and Bealoth; 17 Jehoshaphat the son of Paruah, in [the tribe of] Issachar; 18 Shimei the son of Ela, in [the tribe of] Benjamin; 19 Geber the son of Uri, in the land of Gilead, the country of Sihon king of the Amorites and of Og king of Bashan; and he was the only officer who was in the land.

Solomon’s Power, Wealth and Wisdom

20 [The people of] Judah and Israel were as numerous as the sand that is in abundance by the sea; they were eating and drinking and rejoicing.

21 [e]Now Solomon reigned over all the kingdoms from the [Euphrates] River to the land of the Philistines and to the border of Egypt; they brought tribute (money) and served Solomon all the days of his life.

22 Solomon’s food [for the royal household] for one day was thirty [f]kors of finely milled flour, sixty kors of wheat flour, 23 ten fat oxen, twenty pasture-fed oxen, a hundred sheep not counting fallow deer, gazelles, roebucks, and fattened fowl. 24 For he was ruling over everything west of the [Euphrates] River, from Tiphsah to Gaza, over all the kings west of the [Euphrates] River; and he had peace on all sides around him. 25 Judah and Israel lived in security, every man under his vine and fig tree [in peace and prosperity], from Dan [in the north] to Beersheba [in the south], during all the days of Solomon.(D) 26 Solomon also had [g]40,000 stalls of horses for his chariots, and 12,000 horsemen. 27 Those deputies provided food for King Solomon and for all [the staff] who came to King Solomon’s table, each in his month; they let nothing be lacking. 28 They also brought the barley and straw for the horses and swift steeds (warhorses, chargers) to the place where it was needed, each man according to his assignment.

29 Now God gave Solomon [exceptional] wisdom and very great discernment and breadth of mind, like the sand of the seashore. 30 Solomon’s wisdom surpassed the wisdom of all the sons of the east and all the wisdom of Egypt. 31 For he was wiser [h]than all [other] men, [wiser] than [i]Ethan the Ezrahite, and Heman, Calcol, and Darda, the sons of Mahol. His fame was known in all the surrounding nations. 32 He also spoke 3,000 proverbs, and his songs were 1,005. 33 He spoke of trees, from the cedar which is in Lebanon to the hyssop [vine] that grows on the wall; he spoke also of animals, of birds, of creeping things, and fish. 34 People came from all the peoples (nations) to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and from all the kings of the earth who had heard of his wisdom.

Acts 6

Choosing of the Seven

Now about this time, when the number of disciples was increasing, a complaint was made by the [a]Hellenists (Greek-speaking Jews) against the [[b]native] Hebrews, because their widows were being overlooked in the daily serving of food. So the [c]Twelve called the disciples together and said, “It is not appropriate for us to neglect [teaching] the word of God in order to serve tables and manage the distribution of food. Therefore, brothers, choose from among you seven men with good reputations [men of godly character and moral integrity], full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we may put in charge of this task. But we will [continue to] devote ourselves [steadfastly] to prayer and to the ministry of the word.” The suggestion pleased the whole congregation; and they selected [d]Stephen, a man full of faith [in Christ Jesus], and [filled with and led by] the Holy Spirit, and Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas (Nikolaos), a proselyte (Gentile convert) from Antioch. They brought these men before the apostles; and after praying, they laid their hands on them [to dedicate and commission them for this service].

And the message of God kept on growing and spreading, and the number of disciples continued to increase greatly in Jerusalem; and a large number of the priests were becoming obedient to the faith [accepting Jesus as Messiah and acknowledging Him as the Source of eternal salvation].

Now Stephen, full of grace (divine blessing, favor) and power, was doing great wonders and signs (attesting miracles) among the people. However, some men from what was called the Synagogue of the Freedmen (freed Jewish slaves), both Cyrenians and Alexandrians, and some from Cilicia and [the province of] Asia, rose up and questioned and argued with Stephen. 10 But they were not able to successfully withstand and cope with the wisdom and the intelligence [and the power and inspiration] of the Spirit by whom he was speaking. 11 Then [to attack him another way] they secretly instructed men to say, “We have heard this man [Stephen] speak blasphemous (slanderous, sacrilegious, abusive) words against Moses and against God.” 12 And they provoked and incited the people, as well as the elders and the scribes, and they came up to Stephen and seized him and brought him before the Council (Sanhedrin, Jewish High Court). 13 They presented false witnesses who said, “This man never stops speaking against this holy place and the Law [of Moses]; 14 for we have heard him say that this Jesus the Nazarene will tear down this place and will change the traditions and customs which Moses handed down to us.” 15 Then all those who were sitting in the Council, stared [intently] at him, and they saw that Stephen’s face was like the face of an angel.

  4. Acts 6:5 These seven men had Greek names, so they may have been Greek in ancestry, language, or way of life; however, Stephen, in his defense before the Sanhedrin (ch 7), exhibited an extensive knowledge of Jewish history.

Psalm 126

Thanksgiving for Return from Captivity.

A Song of [a]Ascents.

126 When the Lord brought back the captives to Zion (Jerusalem),
We were like those who dream [it seemed so unreal].(A)

Then our mouth was filled with laughter
And our tongue with joyful shouting;
Then they said among the nations,
“The Lord has done great things for them.”

The Lord has done great things for us;
We are glad!

Restore our [b]captivity, O Lord,
As the stream-beds in the South (the Negev) [are restored by torrents of rain].

They who sow in tears shall reap with joyful singing.

He who goes back and forth weeping, carrying his bag of seed [for planting],
Will indeed come again with a shout of joy, bringing his sheaves with him.

The appetite of a worker works for him,
For his hunger urges him on.

1 Kings 2:1-3:2, Acts 5:1-42, Psalms 125:1-5, Proverbs 16:25

Today is the 7th day of June. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian and it is a pleasure to be with you right now as we step in, step away from all that’s going on and step into a peaceful place where we can allow God’s word to speak to us. And, so, we’re reading from the Amplified Bible this week and we began first Kings yesterday and we are watching Solomon, David’s son ascend to the throne and reaching the end of David’s life. First Kings chapter 2 verse 1 through 23 verse 2 today.

Commentary:

Okay. So, we have certainly transitioned in the Old Testament. King David this man that…we’ve been journeying with him since he was a lot younger. So, we’ve been traveling with him for a long time and we reached the end of that. He lays his head down in death today and Solomon ascends to the throne. And we can see that that wasn’t the most smooth of transitions. And Solomon is beginning to realize that there is a lot to his job and he’s gonna need help and we’ll get to that in the coming days.

And in the book of Acts…it…I mean…this this Jesus thing that has been happening is starting to actually get some traction and the apostles are in the temple complex and people are thronging around them and things are happening. There’s just an incredible amount of energy happening through the power of the Holy Spirit and people are being drawn to this and its making the religious leaders burn with jealousy. And, so, we witness them exerting their power and they’re trying to intimidate the apostles, who simply can only say ‘we’ve got to obey God’. Like, no matter what…no matter what we do…no matter what you’re telling us…no matter what authority that you have…we have to obey God. And in the end, they, the Sanhedrin, the Jewish High Council decides they’re gonna kill the apostles the same way that they killed Jesus. But one of their most educated doctors of the law steps up and gives some counsel, that we read today. Gamaliel is an interesting character because he’s a revered, revered in Judaism, but it’s the apostle Paul, who we will meet shortly and spend pretty much the rest of our year with, who claims that he had been trained at the feet of Gamaliel, but we don’t really know anything more than that. So, it becomes conjecture, interesting conjecture. I mean, on the one side, scholars would debate that maybe Paul wasn’t so trained up by Gamaliel since, Gamaliel shows this sort of even balanced neutral counsel toward the apostles. And the apostle Paul in was raging against the followers of Jesus before he became a follower himself. On the other hand Gamaliel could’ve had a strong influence on Paul that weighed in later, as Paul was reconsidering after his encounter with Jesus. So, we don’t know. We don’t know the exact dates of a lot of this. And what makes it even little bit more interesting is that, you know, in the letters of the apostle Paul that we’re going to move into as we move forward in the New Testament, they were written before Acts and the Gospels. So, they’re earlier writings, Paul’s letters. Like, the New Testament isn’t laid out chronologically. At any rate, Gamaliel steps forward and offers really wise counsel to the Sanhedrin that they take and the church spreads forward. We can see that the Holy Spirit is protecting these people, as bold as they are, as the church is getting traction.

Prayer:

Father, we thank you for your word. Want to thank you for all that it brings up and all that it allows us to consider and all that we look at and wrestle through. And we thank you that your Holy Spirit is always there leading us into all truth. And, so, we thank you for that. We ask that you plant your word in our lives today so that the fruit of the Spirit might abound in everything that we do and think and say. In Jesus; name we ask.

I’ve got a laborious job that’s really…I’m just exhausted all of the time.

And, well, I’ve changed locations and I God sat next to David and pretty soon I got to know him and I got to figure out what an amazingly intelligent, smart, funny, he is hilarious, and he is so smart, and I have learned so much from him, including how not to judge a book by its cover. Awe….I failed. I had to ask forgiveness. I kid you not…in that, I asked God to show me people as he sees them not as we see them. And we are all really worried, you know, because we kind of fell in love with them, you know? And, you know, I just don’t want to see him go out like this. So, would you all please pray for my friend David? And…

Hi family. This is Jeanette from Charlotte. This is my first time calling in and like so many of you I have been listening and pray along with you all for quite a while now. I want to ask for prayer for my husband Vince. He has Parkinson’s disease and his symptoms have progressed to the point that he’s going to have brain surgery called the brain stimulation. This surgery happens in three stages, the first of which will be on June the 5th, when they place 4 screws called fiducial’s under his scalp to serve as markers. The second phase happens on June 13th. This is the most invasive part of the process, where they drill holes in his skull and place electrodes on his brain. The last stage happens on June 25th when they place of battery pack on his chest, kind of similar to what they do for a pacemaker. On July 10th they will actually turn it on for the first time and we’ll find out how it works for him. Vince has been struggling so much. We’ve been asking God to heal him since he was diagnosed in 2008. We realize that God uses everything in our lives to draw us closer to Him. So, would you please pray for, number one, that we would draw still closer to God through this process and that God will accomplish what He desires in our lives. Number two, would you please pray for an extraordinarily successful outcome, so that Vince can regain a good quality of life and that he would be able to do things again. We really want God to be glorified above all else. Vince and I love and appreciate you, family. Thanks for your prayers.

1 Kings 2:1-3:2

David’s Charge to Solomon

When David’s time to die approached, he gave instructions to Solomon his son, saying, “I am going the way of all the earth [as dust to dust]. Be strong and prove yourself a man. Keep the charge of the Lord your God, [that is, fulfill your obligation to] walk in His ways, keep His statutes, His commandments, His precepts, and His testimonies, as it is written in the Law of Moses, so that you may succeed in everything that you do and wherever you turn, so that the Lord may fulfill His [a]promise concerning me, saying, ‘If your sons are careful regarding their way [of life], to walk before Me in truth with all their heart and mind and with all their soul, you shall not fail to have a man (descendant) on the throne of Israel.’

Now you also know what Joab the son of Zeruiah [my sister] did to me, and what he did to the two commanders of the armies of Israel, to Abner the son of Ner and to Amasa the son of Jether, [both of] whom he murdered; [b]avenging the blood of war in [a time of] peace. And he put the [innocent] blood of war [of Abner and Amasa] on his [c]belt that was around his [d]waist, and on his sandals on his feet. So act in accordance with your wisdom, but do not let his gray head go down to Sheol (the place of the dead) in peace. But be gracious and kind to the sons of Barzillai the Gileadite, and let them be among those who [have the honor to] eat at your table; for they met me [with kindness] when I fled from your brother Absalom.(A) And look, you have with you Shimei the son of Gera, the Benjamite of Bahurim; he is the one who cursed me with a sinister curse the day I went to Mahanaim. But he came down to meet me at the Jordan [on my return], and I swore to him by the Lord, saying, ‘I will not put you to death with the sword.’ But now do not let him go unpunished, for you are a wise man; and you will know what to do to him, and you will bring his gray head down to Sheol [covered] with blood.”

Death of David

10 So David lay down with his fathers [in death] and was buried in the [e]City of David. 11 The time that David reigned over Israel was forty years: he reigned seven years in Hebron and thirty-three years in Jerusalem. 12 Then Solomon sat on the throne of David his father, and his kingdom was firmly established.

13 Now Adonijah the son of [David and] Haggith came to Bathsheba the mother of Solomon. She said, “Do you come in peace?” And he said, “In peace.” 14 Then he said, “I have something to say to you.” And she said, “Speak.” 15 So he said, “You know that the kingdom belonged to me [as the eldest living son] and all Israel [f]looked to me and expected me to be king. However, the kingdom has passed [from me] and became my brother’s, for it was his from the Lord. 16 So now I am making one request of you; do not [g]refuse me.” And she said to him, “Speak.” 17 He said, “Please speak to King Solomon, for he will not refuse you; ask that he may give me Abishag the Shunammite as a wife.”(B) 18 Bathsheba replied, “Very well; I will speak to the king for you.”

Adonijah Executed

19 So Bathsheba went to King Solomon to speak to him for Adonijah. And the king rose to meet her, bowed before her, and sat down on his throne; then he had a throne set for her, the king’s mother, and she sat on his right. 20 Then she said, “I am making one small request of you; do not refuse me.” And the king said to her, “Ask, my mother, for I will not refuse you.” 21 So she said, “Let Abishag the Shunammite be given to your brother Adonijah as a wife.” 22 King Solomon answered and said to his mother, “And why are you asking for [h]Abishag the Shunammite for Adonijah? Ask the kingdom for him also—since he is my older brother—[ask it] for him and for Abiathar the priest and Joab the son of Zeruiah [his supporters]!” 23 Then King Solomon swore by the Lord, saying, “May God do the same to me, and more also, if Adonijah has not requested this [deplorable] thing against his own [i]life. 24 So now, as the Lord lives, who has established me and set me on the throne of David my father, and who has made me a house as He promised, Adonijah shall indeed be put to death today.” 25 So King Solomon sent Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and he [j]struck Adonijah and he died.

26 Then the king said to Abiathar the priest, “Go to Anathoth to your own fields, for you [k]certainly deserve to die; but I will not put you to death this day, because you carried the ark of the Lord God before my father David, and you suffered everything that my father endured.” 27 So Solomon dismissed Abiathar [a descendant of Eli] from being priest to the Lord, fulfilling the word of the Lord, which He had spoken concerning the house (descendants) of Eli in Shiloh.(C)

Joab Executed

28 Now the news reached Joab, for Joab had supported and followed Adonijah, although he had not followed Absalom. So Joab fled to the [sacred] tent of the Lord and took hold of the horns of the altar [to seek asylum]. 29 King Solomon was told that Joab had fled to the tent of the Lord and was at that moment beside the altar. Then Solomon sent Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, saying, “Go, [l]strike him down.” 30 So Benaiah came to the tent of the Lord and told Joab, “This is what the king commands, ‘Come out of there.’” But Joab said, “No, for I will die here.” Then Benaiah brought word to the king again, saying, “This is what Joab said, and this is how he answered me.” 31 The king said to him, “Do as he has said. [m]Strike him down and bury him, so that you may remove from me and from my father’s house the innocent blood which Joab shed. 32 The Lord will return his bloody deeds upon his own head, because he struck down two men more righteous and honorable than he and killed them with the sword, without my father David knowing: Abner the son of Ner, commander of the army of Israel, and Amasa the son of Jether, commander of the army of Judah. 33 So shall their blood return on the head of Joab and the heads of his descendants forever. But for David, his descendants, his house, and his throne, may there be peace from the Lord forever.” 34 So Benaiah the son of Jehoiada went up [to the tabernacle] and struck and killed Joab, and he was buried at his own house in the wilderness [of Judah]. 35 The king appointed Benaiah the son of Jehoiada over the army in Joab’s place, and appointed Zadok the priest in place of Abiathar.

Shimei Executed

36 Now the king sent word and called for Shimei and said to him, “Build yourself a house in Jerusalem and live there. Do not go from there to [n]any other place. 37 For on the day you leave and cross over the [o]Brook Kidron, know for certain that you shall surely die; your blood shall be on your own head.” 38 Shimei said to the king, “The word (ruling) is good. As my lord the king has said, so will your servant do.” So Shimei lived in Jerusalem for many days.

39 But it happened after three years, that two of Shimei’s servants ran away to Achish the son of Maacah, the king of [p]Gath. And Shimei was told, “Behold, your [runaway] servants are in Gath.” 40 So Shimei arose, saddled his donkey, and went to Gath to [King] Achish to look for his servants. And Shimei went and brought them back from Gath. 41 Now Solomon was told that Shimei had gone from Jerusalem to Gath, and had returned. 42 So the king sent word and called for Shimei and said to him, “Did I not make you swear by the Lord and solemnly warn you, saying, ‘Know for certain that on the day you leave [Jerusalem] and go anywhere, you shall surely die’? And you said to me, ‘The word (ruling) I have heard is good.’ 43 Why then have you not kept the oath of the Lord, and the command which I gave you?” 44 The king also said to Shimei, “You are aware in your own heart of all the evil you did to my father David; so the Lord shall return your evil on your own head. 45 But King Solomon shall be blessed, and the throne of David shall be established before the Lord forever.” 46 So the king commanded Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and he went out and struck down Shimei, and he died.

So the kingdom was established in the hands of Solomon.

Solomon’s Rule Consolidated

Now Solomon became a son-in-law to Pharaoh king of Egypt [and formed an alliance] by [q]taking Pharaoh’s daughter [in marriage]. He brought her to the [r]City of David [where she remained temporarily] until he had finished building his own house (palace) and the house of the Lord and the wall around Jerusalem. But [in the meantime] the people were still sacrificing [to God] on the high places (hilltops) [as the pagans did to their idols], for there was no [permanent] house yet built for the [s]Name of the Lord.

  1. 1 Kings 2:4 Lit His word which He spoke.
  2. 1 Kings 2:5 Lit he also shed.
  3. 1 Kings 2:5 Lit girdle. The girdle was a band about six inches wide that had clasps or fasteners in front. It was worn around the loins (the midsection of the body between the lower ribs and the hips) and was normally made of leather. Expensive or embroidered girdles were also worn and were made of cotton, flax or silk. The girdle also served as a kind of pocket or pouch and was used to carry personal items such as a dagger, money, or other necessary things.
  4. 1 Kings 2:5 Lit loins.
  5. 1 Kings 2:10 Not the walled city today called “Old Jerusalem” but a peninsula of land extending south from the “old city.”
  6. 1 Kings 2:15 Lit set their faces toward me.
  7. 1 Kings 2:16 Lit turn away my face; similarly in the following verses.
  8. 1 Kings 2:22 Even though Abishag remained a virgin while attending David during his final days, no one was closer to him. Bathsheba evidently did not view Abishag’s status as David’s former nurse to be problematic, but Solomon immediately perceived marriage to Abishag as a claim to the throne, which was Adonijah’s true intention in making the request. Abishag would have been considered an inheritance from David.
  9. 1 Kings 2:23 Lit soul.
  10. 1 Kings 2:25 Lit fell upon.
  11. 1 Kings 2:26 Lit are a man of death.
  12. 1 Kings 2:29 Lit fall upon him.
  13. 1 Kings 2:31 Lit fall upon.
  14. 1 Kings 2:36 Lit here and there.
  15. 1 Kings 2:37 This was the border between the tribal territories of Judah and Benjamin, Shimei’s tribe. Confinement in Jerusalem would stop Shimei from plotting against Solomon.
  16. 1 Kings 2:39 One of the five major cities of the Philistines.
  17. 1 Kings 3:1 Pharaoh gave the Canaanite city of Gezer to his daughter as a dowry. Located on a major trade route it was strategically important to the economies of both Egypt and Israel (see 9:16).
  18. 1 Kings 3:1 This was on the south side of the eastern ridge of Jerusalem.

Acts 5

Fate of Ananias and Sapphira

Now a man named Ananias, with his wife Sapphira, sold a piece of property, and with his wife’s full knowledge [and complicity] he kept back some of the proceeds, bringing only a [a]portion of it, and set it at the apostles’ feet. But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and [secretly] keep back for yourself some of the proceeds [from the sale] of the land? As long as it remained [unsold], did it not remain your own [to do with as you pleased]? And after it was sold, was the money not under your control? Why is it that you have conceived this act [of hypocrisy and deceit] in your heart? You have not [simply] lied to people, but to God.” And hearing these words, Ananias fell down suddenly and died; and great fear and awe gripped those who heard of it. And the young men [in the congregation] got up and wrapped up the body, and carried it out and buried it.

Now after an interval of about three hours his wife came in, not knowing what had happened. Peter asked her, “Tell me whether you sold your land for so much?” And she said, “Yes, for so much.” Then Peter said to her, “How could you two have agreed together to put the Spirit of the Lord to the test? Look! The feet of those who have buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out also.” 10 And at once she fell down at his feet and died; and the young men came in and found her dead, and they carried her out and buried her beside her husband. 11 And great fear and awe gripped the whole church, and all who heard about these things.

12 At the hands of the apostles many signs and wonders (attesting miracles) were continually taking place among the people. And by common consent they all met together [at the temple] in [the covered porch called] Solomon’s portico. 13 But none of the rest [of the people, the non-believers] dared to associate with them; however, the people were holding them in high esteem and were speaking highly of them. 14 More and more believers in the Lord, crowds of men and women, were constantly being added to their number, 15 to such an extent that they even carried their sick out into the streets and put them on cots and sleeping pads, so that when Peter came by at least his shadow might fall on one of them [with healing power]. 16 And the people from the towns in the vicinity of Jerusalem were coming together, bringing the sick and those who were tormented by unclean spirits, and they were all being healed.

Imprisonment and Release

17 But the [b]high priest stood up, along with all his associates (that is, the sect of the Sadducees), and they were filled with jealousy and resentment. 18 They arrested the apostles and put them in a public jail. 19 But during the night an angel of the Lord opened the prison doors, and leading them out, he said, 20 “Go, stand and continue to tell the people in the temple [courtyards] the whole message of this Life [the eternal life revealed by Christ and found through faith in Him].” 21 When they heard this, they went into the temple [courtyards] about daybreak and began teaching.

Now when the high priest and his associates arrived, they called together the Council (Sanhedrin, Jewish High Court), even all the council of elders of the sons of Israel, and sent word to the prison for the apostles to be brought [before them]. 22 But when the officers arrived, they did not find them in the prison; and they came back and reported, 23 “We found the prison securely locked and the guards standing at the doors, but when we opened [the doors], we found no one inside.” 24 Now when the captain of the temple guard and the chief priests heard these things, they were greatly perplexed, wondering what would come of this. 25 But someone came and told them, “The men whom you put in prison are standing [right here] in the temple [area], teaching the people!” 26 Then the captain went with the officers and brought them back, without hurting them (because they were afraid of the people, worried that they might be stoned).

27 So they brought them and presented them before the Council (Sanhedrin, Jewish High Court). The high priest questioned them, 28 saying, “We gave you strict orders not to continue teaching in this name, and yet you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and you intend to bring this [c]Man’s blood on us [by accusing us as His murderers].” 29 Then Peter and the apostles replied, “We must obey God rather than men [we have no other choice]. 30 The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom you had put to death by hanging Him on a [d]cross [and you are responsible].(A) 31 God exalted Him to His right hand as Prince and Savior and Deliverer, in order to grant repentance to Israel, and [to grant] forgiveness of sins. 32 And we are witnesses of these things; and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has bestowed on those who obey Him.”

Gamaliel’s Counsel

33 Now when they heard this, they were infuriated and they intended to kill the apostles. 34 But a Pharisee named [e]Gamaliel, a teacher of the Law [of Moses], highly esteemed by all the people, stood up in the Council (Sanhedrin, Jewish High Court) and ordered that the men be taken outside for a little while. 35 Then he said to the Council, “Men of Israel, be careful in regard to what you propose to do to these men. 36 For some time ago Theudas rose up, claiming to be somebody [of importance], and a group of about four hundred men allied themselves with him. But he was killed, and all who followed him were scattered and came to nothing. 37 After this man, Judas the Galilean rose up, [and led an uprising] during the time of the census, and drew people after him; he was also killed, and all his followers were scattered. 38 So in the present case, I say to you, stay away from these men and let them alone, for if this plan or action is of men [merely human in origin], it will fail and be destroyed; 39 but if it is of God [and it appears that it is], you will not be able to stop them; or else you may even be found fighting against God!”

40 The Council (Sanhedrin, Jewish High Court) took his advice; and after summoning the apostles, they flogged them and ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and released them. 41 So they left the Council, rejoicing that they had been considered worthy [dignified by indignity] to suffer shame for [the sake of] His name. 42 And every single day, in the temple [area] and in homes, they did not stop teaching and telling the good news of Jesus as the Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed).

Footnotes:

  1. Acts 5:2 Ananias wanted everyone to think that he had turned over all the money from the sale, so secretly holding some back was essentially embezzling. If he had been honest and told Peter that he had kept some of the money, he would have done nothing wrong.
  2. Acts 5:17 This may refer to either Caiaphas (the official high priest) or his father-in-law, Annas (the de facto high priest). See note 4:6.
  3. Acts 5:28 The reason the Council members refused to refer to Jesus by name is unclear, but may indicate contempt, guilt, or perhaps fear.
  4. Acts 5:30 Lit wood.
  5. Acts 5:34 Saul of Tarsus, later known as the apostle Paul, was among Gamaliel’s students. See 22:3.

Psalm 125

The Lord Surrounds His People.

A Song of [a]Ascents.

125 Those who trust in and rely on the Lord [with confident expectation]
Are like Mount Zion, which cannot be moved but remains forever.

As the mountains surround Jerusalem,
So the Lord surrounds His people
From this time forth and forever.

For the scepter of wickedness shall not rest on the land of the righteous,
So that the righteous will not reach out their hands to do wrong.

Do good, O Lord, to those who are good
And to those who are upright in their hearts.

But as for those who turn aside to their crooked ways [in unresponsiveness to God],
The Lord will lead them away with those who do evil.
Peace be upon Israel.

1 Kings 1:1-53, Acts 4:1-37, Psalms 124:1-8, Proverbs 16:24

Today is the 6th day of June. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian. It’s great to be here with you today and every day. And I’m excited that we can take the next step forward. The step forward today is going to lead us into a new book. And we will begin the book of 1 Kings.

Introduction to the book of First Kings:

In many ways, we’ll simply be continuing the story forward from the books of Samuel. But there are nuances. As with other manuscripts in the Bible, the books of Kings were broken apart into two for ease. At one time it was a complete single volume, but it was broken into two, 1st and 2nd Kings, for ease. And the book of Kings that we’re going into will mimic in a lot of ways the books of 1st and 2nd Chronicles that will follow. It’s the same point in history observed from two vantage points. In the books of Kings, more prominence or focus is given to the royals and their interaction with some of the key prophetic voices. And then when we get to the books of Chronicles, the priestly and Levitical offices will offer their perspective on the same stories. So as we begin this new territory, we’ll witness the end of King David’s reign and then this dramatic ascension of his son Solomon to the throne. Then Solomon will guide Israel into peace and abundance as they faithfully worship the Lord. We’ll see the temple being erected as worship and praise take an iconic place in Hebrew culture. And then Solomon will lead Israel into its finest hour. And then things will start to turn and we’ll observe it all beginning to fall apart as Solomon reaches the end of his life and reign. And once that happens, we’ll have to pay attention because it can get confusing because there’s gonna be a lot of kings because there’s going to be more than one country. After Solomon’s death, Israel will divide into two. These will be known as the northern kingdom of Israel and the southern kingdom of Judah. And stories of prophets like Elijah and Elisha will be prominent. And then finally we’ll watch the end of it all - military overthrow come to the land and the kingdoms fall. But all is never lost and we’ll watch the back and forth of the children of Israel as they depart from God and return to God and we’ll find out where both of those roads lead and we’ll apply both of those to our own lives. And so, with that, we begin. And we’re reading from the Amplified Bible this week. 1 Kings 1.

Prayer:

Father, we once again thank You for the gift of Your Word and the way that it is alive and present in our lives, speaking into situations. No matter what’s going on, You continue to counsel us and love us kindly through Your Word and we’re thankful. We invite Your Holy Spirit to come and plant Your Word into our lives so that it can yield the fruit of the Spirit within us as we live into it. Come Jesus we pray. In Your precious name we ask. Amen.

Announcements:

dailyaudiobible.com is the website, it’s home base, it’s where you find out what’s going on around here as I say most every day, but there’s always something going on around here.

Right now, it is the Daily Audio Bible Family Reunion where the global campfire comes together. This is an event that we have had on the drawing board for a while. Been looking forward to it for a long time. I’ve gotten myself super excited. It was kind of like slow to warm up to the idea, but when it all became clear, it was like, of course. Of course. This’ll be a blast. And it really just comes from some of the DNA of the Daily Audio Bible from years gone by. Back in 2012, all of 13 and some of 14, we went on this tour. And we called it the Family Gathering Tour. And I’m sure that some of you within the sound of my voice right now were at some of those events. And we traveled all over the place, all over the world. We went to the UK a couple times, we went to Australia, we were all over the United States, we were up in Canada, we went all over the place with the idea of bringing community together in the cities where they existed. So Daily Audio Bible people would come to these events not knowing each other but living in the same city and finding connections. And we live broadcast so many of those events. It was a wonderful time, but it came to an end. It was exhausting. But now we’re gonna do a family reunion. All of us can come together. You are invited. My family invites your family to the rolling hills of Tennessee. And we have a great facility, a great retreat center to have some time. But we also wanted to build time for you to explore. Maybe explore with another Dabber or maybe just explore with your family or just go on an adventure. So, we created some different things for you to do depending on your interests. And that will all get emailed to you when you do register so that you can drink in the south and the beauty of the rolling hills. But we’ll also come together in the evenings, enjoy our dinners and just go into a time where we can hang out and be community, sing together, talk together play together. We’ll have campfires afterward. It’s basically the Family Gathering Tour that we traveled all over the world. We’re just saying let’s come together around the global campfire in the rolling hills of Tennessee. Let’s put faces to those voices that we’ve known for so long. Let’s actually make eye to eye contact with people that we’ve been praying for maybe years or months or weeks. Let’s do this. Let’s come together as the global campfire in the rolling hills of Tennessee. So that’s going to take place September 1 and 2 of this year, just shy of three months from now. Community Prayer and Praise:

Hi Daily Audio Bible family. This is Paul from Houston and I just want to ask for prayer for my marriage. I’ve been married…it’ll be 20 years. I’ve been separated for almost a little over a year. And this week my spouse has gone to lawyers. And I’m, you know, I’m really just asking for prayer because, you know, God’s taken and addiction away but it’s taken a toll on our marriage. And I’m praying over my wife that God would heal her, the way she thinks, and some things. I believe there’s some sort of mental block, there is a…there is a…the thing that I am praying over, it’s like a mental illness. It’s called the borderline personality, where they devalue the person and then they overvalue other people that are not even associated with them or that they don’t have any idea of. And I’m asking that God would heal her and heal her mind, that he put his hand on her, that he would work in her. And, recently, she had heart issues. And we took her and they did a checkup. There was blockage in the heart and all that was clear, thank God. But, you know, I’m just praying that God would soften her heart, that He would work in her, and that He would give her compassion. And I just pray for all the marriages, that we can have compassion for one another, and that we can love each other the way that God intended us to love and that God would give us the…

Hi everyone, it’s Christie from Kentucky. I wanted to give my praise be to God testimony. I mentioned that we had a celebration of life for my mom and dad on the 26th of May. We had waited because it had been wintertime when we lost my dad and he wanted to wait on mom’s service. I think he knew he was getting ready to go home. So, we planned the service for the springtime and May 26th was the day we packed. There was a 90% chance of rain that day and I was so very sad because I had planned on doing a 21-gun salute for my daddy and a butterfly release for my mom. And, so, I was sad. And the Lord, He reminded me of his word He said, child, did I not say anything that you ask in my name, that I will hear and answer your prayers. Nothing is impossible for Me. And I said, yes Lord, you’re right nothing is impossible. And so, He said just ask. And, so, I just spoke to those storms and I told them that they needed to leave in the name of Jesus. And I went ahead by faith ordered the butterflies. It ended up being a glorious, beautiful, sunshiny day. And honoring my mom and dad by the release of butterflies and the 21-gun salute made the ceremony so special. And, so, this is me, Christie, giving God all praise, all glory. Thank you, Jesus for your faithfulness. He knows the desires of our hearts doesn’t He? I love you guys and I pray each of you are having a most blessed and lovely day today.

Hey everyone. It’s Karen in St. Louis. Hey, I want to ask you guys if you can pray for Crystal. This is a woman that I ran into. She was outside of one of my vendors when I was picking up products and she is a prostitute and a drug addict. And I helped her out. And…gosh I could tell you a whole story about what happened after I helped her out, which is like a massive spiritual work that __ but I won’t. I just need you to pray for her. I have…she is really wanting…I prayed with her…she is wanting to get off the street. She’s tired of it. She knows the gospel. Give you a long story about how her past…her husband was a pastor, got hooked on Percocet, became drug addicted, and then she became drug addicted, and now she’s got two kids in foster care and she’s on the street. So, I have got a ministry that I’ve got to hook her up with and I’ve been calling her, getting voicemail, and I just pray that for her heart to be receptive, that she would be sober when she gets the call, and that she would be able to reach out to this ministry that would help her to leave and stand by her with her drug addiction and the whole 9 yards. So, love you guys. Thanks, so much Brian for everything. Looking forward to seeing you guys on Labor Day weekend. Bye.

Hi everyone. It’s Karen in St. Louis. Brian, I just…I wanted to say something about Psalm 121. Kind of a testimony. About 20 years ago I was like super super sick, maybe, 20, 15 years ago something like that. Anyway, I was so sick, and couldn’t even work and doctors didn’t know what was wrong with me. They checked me for MS. They checked everything and then they just kept throwing medications at me, which was making things even worse. But there’s a song by Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir, which is called Psalm of 121. And that song ministered to me like nobody’s business. I was like on my face every day praying and the Lord was saying to me, trust Me, trust Me. I know the doctors don’t know what’s wrong with you. I know it’s wrong with you. Trust Me. And, so, but I also wanted to say that that whole Psalm, I mean, my help comes from the Lord. It just continually, just points to Him. He will not let your foot slip. The Lord watches over you. The Lord will keep you from all harm. In our sermon this morning at church, our pastor was speaking about how God does protect us. And, so, I just wanted to encourage those that are out there that are sick and just praying and just struggling with pain, that our help comes from the Lord and just to continue to keep your eyes focused to him. And be well. I mean, he will give you comfort beyond belief and He can heal you. I mean, He directed me to the right Dr., who finally figured it out. It all had to do with my adrenal glands and adrenal fatigue…

1 Kings 1

David in Old Age

Now King David was [a]old, advanced in years; they covered him with clothes, but he could not get warm. So his servants said to him, “Let a young virgin be found for my lord the king and let her attend him and become his nurse; let her lie against your chest, so that my lord the king may feel warm.” So they searched for a beautiful girl throughout the territory of Israel, and found Abishag the [b]Shunammite, and brought her to the king. The girl was very beautiful; and she became the king’s nurse and served him, but the king [c]was not intimate with her.

Then Adonijah the son of [David’s wife] Haggith exalted himself, saying, “I [the eldest living son] will be king.” So [following Absalom’s example] he prepared for himself chariots and horsemen, and fifty men to run before him.(A) His father [David] had [d]never rebuked him at any time by asking, “Why have you done this?” Adonijah was also a very handsome man, and he was born after Absalom. He had conferred with [e]Joab the son of Zeruiah [David’s half sister] and with Abiathar the priest; and they followed Adonijah and helped him. But Zadok the priest, Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, Nathan the prophet, Shimei, Rei, and David’s [f]most formidable warriors did not side with Adonijah [in his desire to become king].

Adonijah sacrificed sheep and oxen and fattened steers by the Stone of Zoheleth, which is beside [the well] En-rogel; and he invited all his brothers, the king’s sons, and all the men of Judah, the king’s servants [to this feast].(B) 10 But he did not invite Nathan the prophet, Benaiah, the most formidable warriors, or his brother Solomon.

Nathan and Bathsheba

11 Then Nathan spoke to Bathsheba the mother of Solomon, “Have you not heard that Adonijah the son of Haggith has become king, and David our lord does not know about it? 12 Come now, please let me advise you and save your life and the life of your son Solomon.(C) 13 Go at once to King David and say to him, ‘Did you not, my lord, O king, swear to your maidservant, saying, “Solomon your son shall certainly be king after me, and he shall sit on my throne”? Why then has Adonijah become king?’ 14 Behold, while you are still there speaking with the king, I will come in after you and confirm your words.”

15 So Bathsheba went to the king in his bedroom. Now the king was very old and weak, and Abishag the Shunammite was attending the king. 16 So Bathsheba bowed down and paid respect to the king. And the king said, “[g]What do you wish?” 17 She said to him, “My lord, you swore by the Lord your God to your maidservant, saying, ‘Solomon your son shall certainly be king after me and he shall sit on my throne.’ 18 But now, behold, Adonijah is [acting as] king; and now [as things stand], my lord the king, you do not know it. 19 He has sacrificed oxen and fattened steers and sheep in abundance, and has invited all the king’s sons and Abiathar the priest and Joab the commander of the army [to a feast], but he did not invite your servant Solomon. 20 Now as for you, my lord the king, the eyes of all [h]Israel are on you [waiting for you] to tell them who shall sit on the throne of my lord the king after him. 21 Otherwise it will come about when my lord the king lies down [in death] with his fathers, that I and my son Solomon will be considered [i]political enemies.”

22 While she was still speaking with the king, Nathan the prophet came in. 23 The king was told, “Here is Nathan the prophet.” And when he came before the king, he bowed before the king with his face to the ground. 24 Then Nathan said, “My lord the king, have you said, ‘Adonijah shall be king after me, and he shall sit on my throne’? 25 Because he has gone down today [to En-Rogel] and has sacrificed oxen and fattened steers and sheep in abundance, and has invited all the king’s sons, the commanders of the army and Abiathar the priest [to this feast]; and [right now] they are eating and drinking in his presence; and they say, ‘Long live King Adonijah!’ 26 But he has not invited me, your servant, nor Zadok the priest, nor Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, nor your servant Solomon. 27 If this thing has been done by my lord the king, why have you not shown your servants who shall sit on the throne of my lord the king after him?”

28 King David answered, “Call Bathsheba to me.” And she came into the king’s presence and stood before him. 29 Then the king swore an oath and said, “As the Lord lives, who has redeemed my soul from all distress, 30 even as I swore to you by the Lord, the God of Israel, saying, ‘Solomon your son shall certainly be king after me, and he shall sit on my throne in my place’; I will indeed do so this very day.” 31 Bathsheba bowed down with her face to the ground, and laid herself face down before the king and said, “May my lord King David live forever!”

32 Then King David said, “Call Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada to me.” And they came before the king. 33 The king told them, “Take the [j]servants of your lord with you and have Solomon my son [k]ride on my own mule, and bring him down to [the spring at] [l]Gihon [in the Kidron Valley]. 34 Let Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet anoint him there as king over Israel. Then blow the trumpet and say, ‘Long live King Solomon!’ 35 Then you shall come up [to Jerusalem] after him, and he shall come and sit on my throne and he shall reign as king in my place; for I have appointed him to be ruler over Israel and Judah.” 36 Benaiah [the overseer of the king’s bodyguards], the son of Jehoiada answered the king and said, “Amen! (So be it!) May the Lord, the God of my lord the king, say so too. 37 [m]Just as the Lord has been with my lord the king, so may He be with Solomon, and make his throne greater than the throne of my lord King David!”

Solomon Anointed King

38 So Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, the Cherethites, and the Pelethites [the king’s bodyguards] went down [from Jerusalem] and had Solomon ride on King David’s mule, and brought him to [the spring at] Gihon. 39 Zadok the priest took a horn of [olive] oil from the [sacred] tent and anointed Solomon. They blew the trumpet, and all the people said, “Long live King Solomon!” 40 All the people went up after him, and they were playing on flutes and rejoicing with great joy, so that the earth shook and seemed to burst open with their [joyful] sound.

41 Now Adonijah and all the guests who were with him heard it as they finished eating. When Joab heard the trumpet sound, he said, “[n]Why is the city in such an uproar?” 42 While he was still speaking, behold, Jonathan the son of Abiathar the priest arrived. And Adonijah said, “Come in, for you are a valiant and trustworthy man and you bring good news.”(D) 43 But Jonathan replied to Adonijah, “No, on the contrary, our lord King David has made Solomon king! 44 The king has sent him with Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, the Cherethites, and the Pelethites; and they have had him ride on the king’s [own royal] mule. 45 Also, Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet have anointed him king in Gihon, and they have come up from there celebrating, so the city is in an uproar. This is the noise which you have heard. 46 Besides, Solomon has taken his seat on the throne of the kingdom. 47 Moreover, the king’s servants came to bless (congratulate) our lord King David, saying, ‘May [o]your God make the name of Solomon better (more famous) than your name and make his throne greater than your throne.’ And the king bowed himself [before God] upon the bed. 48 The king has also said this: ‘Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, who has granted one [of my descendants] to sit on my throne today and allowed my eyes to see it.’”

49 Then all Adonijah’s guests were terrified [of being branded as traitors] and stood up and left the feast, and each one went on his way. 50 And Adonijah feared Solomon, and he got up and went [to the tabernacle on Mt. Zion] and took hold of the horns of the altar [seeking asylum]. 51 Now Solomon was told, “Behold, Adonijah is afraid of King Solomon, and behold, he has grasped the horns of the altar [seeking God’s protection], saying, ‘King Solomon must swear to me today that he will not kill his servant with the sword.’” 52 Solomon said, “If he [proves he] is a worthy man, not even one of his hairs shall fall to the ground; but if wickedness is found in him, he shall die.” 53 So King Solomon sent [soldiers], and they brought Adonijah down from the altar [that was in front of the tabernacle]. And he came and bowed down to King Solomon, and Solomon said to him, “Go to your house.”

Acts 4

Peter and John Arrested

And while Peter and John were talking to the people, the priests and the captain [who was in charge of the temple area and] of the temple guard and the Sadducees came up to them, being extremely disturbed and thoroughly annoyed because they were teaching the people and proclaiming in [the case of] Jesus the resurrection of the dead. So they arrested them and put them in jail until the next day, because it was evening. But many of those who heard the message [of salvation] believed [in Jesus and accepted Him as the Christ]. And the number of the men came to be about 5,000.

On the next day, their magistrates and elders and scribes (Sanhedrin, Jewish High Court) were gathered together in Jerusalem; and [a]Annas the high priest was there, and [b]Caiaphas and [c]John and Alexander, and all others who were of high-priestly descent. When they had put the men in [d]front of them, they repeatedly asked, “By what sort of power, or in what name [that is, by what kind of authority], did you do this [healing]?” Then Peter, filled with [the power of] the Holy Spirit, said to them, “Rulers and elders of the people [members of the Sanhedrin, the Jewish High Court], if we are being put on trial today [to interrogate us] for a good deed done to [benefit] a disabled man, as to how this man has been restored to health, 10 let it be known and clearly understood by all of you, and by all the people of Israel, that in the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, whom you [demanded be] crucified [by the Romans and], whom God raised from the dead—in this name [that is, by the authority and power of Jesus] this man stands here before you in good health. 11 This Jesus is the stone which was despised and rejected by you, the builders, but which became the [e]chief Cornerstone.(A) 12 And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among people by which we must be saved [for God has provided the world no alternative for salvation].”

Threat and Release

13 Now when the men of the Sanhedrin (Jewish High Court) saw the confidence and boldness of Peter and John, and grasped the fact that they were [f]uneducated and untrained [ordinary] men, they were astounded, and began to recognize that they had been with Jesus. 14 And seeing the man who had been healed standing there with them, they had nothing to say in reply. 15 But after ordering them to step out of the Council [chamber], they began to confer among themselves, 16 saying, “What are we to do with these men? For the fact that an extraordinary miracle has taken place through them is public knowledge and clearly evident to all the residents of Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it. 17 But to keep it from spreading further among the people and the nation, let us [sternly] warn them not to speak again to anyone in this name.” 18 So they sent for them, and commanded them not to speak [as His representatives] or teach at all in the name of Jesus [using Him as their authority]. 19 But Peter and John replied to them, “Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you and obey you rather than God, you must judge [for yourselves]; 20 for we, on our part, cannot stop telling [people] about what we have seen and heard.” 21 When the rulers and Council members had threatened them further, they let them go, finding no way to punish them because [of their fear] of the people, for they were all praising and glorifying and honoring God for what had happened; 22 for the man to whom this sign (attesting miracle) of healing had happened was more than forty years old.

23 After Peter and John were released, they returned to their own [people] and reported everything that the chief priests and elders had said to them. 24 And when they heard it, they raised their voices together to God and said, “O Sovereign Lord [having complete power and authority], it is You who made the heaven and the earth and the sea, and everything that is in them,(B) 25 who by the Holy Spirit, through the mouth of our father David, Your servant, said,

Why did the nations (Gentiles) become arrogant and rage,
And the peoples devise futile things [against the Lord]?
26
The kings of the earth took their stand [to attack],
And the rulers were assembled together
Against the Lord and against His Anointed (the Christ, the Messiah).’(C)

27 For in this city there were gathered together against Your holy Servant Jesus, whom You anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, along with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel, 28 to do whatever Your hand and Your purpose predestined [before the creation of the world] to occur [and so without knowing it, they served Your own purpose]. 29 And now, Lord, observe their threats [take them into account] and grant that Your bond-servants may declare Your message [of salvation] with great confidence, 30 while You extend Your hand to heal, and signs and wonders (attesting miracles) take place through the name [and the authority and power] of Your holy Servant and Son Jesus.” 31 And when they had prayed, the place where they were meeting together was shaken [a sign of God’s presence]; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak the word of God with boldness and courage.

Sharing among Believers

32 Now the company of believers was of one heart and soul, and not one [of them] claimed that anything belonging to him was [exclusively] his own, but everything was common property and for the use of all. 33 And with great ability and power the apostles were continuously testifying to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace [God’s remarkable lovingkindness and favor and goodwill] rested richly upon them all. 34 There was not a needy person among them, because those who were owners of land or houses were selling them, and bringing the proceeds of the sales 35 and placing the money down at the apostles’ feet. Then it was distributed to each as anyone had need.

36 Now Joseph, a Levite and native of Cyprus, who was surnamed [g]Barnabas by the apostles (which translated means Son of Encouragement), 37 sold a field belonging to him and brought the money and set it at the apostles’ feet.

  1. Acts 4:6 Annas served as high priest a.d. 6-15. He was removed from the position by Rome, but continued to be extremely influential and was regarded by the Jews as de facto high priest even though others (his sons and son-in-law) officially held the office.
  2. Acts 4:6 Caiaphas (Annas’ son-in-law) served as high priest a.d. 18-36.
  3. Acts 4:6 Perhaps this is Jonathan, one of Annas’ sons.
  4. Acts 4:7 The Sanhedrin sat in a semi-circle.
  5. Acts 4:11 The cornerstone is the supreme foundation stone governing the structure of the entire building. All other stones will be set in reference to this stone.
  6. Acts 4:13 They had no formal religious training in the rabbinical schools.
  7. Acts 4:36 Barnabas becomes a prominent figure in the book of Acts (9:27; 11:22-30; 13:1-14:28, etc.), and it may be for that reason that Luke briefly mentions him here, telling the reader how Barnabas came to be associated with the apostles.

Psalm 124

Praise for Rescue from Enemies.

A Song of [a]Ascents. Of David.

124 “If it had not been the Lord who was on our side,”
Let Israel now say,

“If it had not been the Lord who was on our side
When men rose up against us,

Then they would have [quickly] swallowed us alive,
When their wrath was kindled against us;

Then the waters would have engulfed us,
The torrent would have swept over our soul;

Then the [b]raging waters would have swept over our soul.”

Blessed be the Lord,
Who has not given us as prey to be torn by their teeth.

We have escaped like a bird from the snare of the fowlers;
The trap is broken and we have escaped.

Our help is in the name of the Lord,
Who made heaven and earth.

2 Samuel 23:24-24:25, Acts 3:1-26, Psalms 123:1-4, Proverbs 16:21-23

Today is the 5th day of June. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian. And it is a pleasure to step into this next day that we’ll spend together in the Scriptures and have this time in community. And we’ve been making some transitions. We’ve transitioned into a new month recently. We completed the Gospels- Matthew, Mark, Luke and John recently and have just gotten into the book of Acts. And today we will complete the book of 2 Samuel which will bring us to another era. We’ll move into 1 Kings tomorrow. So that’s kind of the lay of the land, but let’s finish strong. Let’s finish 2 Samuel well. We’re reading from the Amplified Bible this week. 2 Samuel 23:24-24:25.

Commentary:

Okay. So, we are in the third chapter of Acts. A lot of stuff has happened, the coming of the Holy Spirit. Many people are flocking to Jesus. Peter and John are going into the temple to pray in the afternoon and they have this encounter with this person who couldn’t walk. It’s kind of a famous- at least famous for me. I’ve known this story my whole life. I was taught this story in Sunday school. So, there’s this person who can’t walk. Peter and John are looking at him intently. And he’s kind of shaking his cup wanting people to give him coins. We’re all kind of familiar with the idea. They’re looking at him intently and he sees them looking at him so he’s shaking his cup and he’s expecting them to give him some money. And they don’t. In fact, Peter speaks, Silver and gold have I none. I don’t have any money. But what I do have I’m willing to give you. In the name of Jesus Christ, get up and walk. And the man does. Okay, so this is the first chronicled miraculous healing event that happens in the Bible after Jesus returns to the Father and after the coming of the Holy Spirit. And it draws a crowd obviously. They’re in the temple complex, this whole thing goes down. People had seen this guy begging many times, so he was not unknown and here he is walking around. And, so, this draws a crowd, which allows Peter to speak again about Jesus. The way that he leads into his talk is important for us because he asks a question that we should be asking as we move through the rest of the New Testament. Okay, so Peter leads in by saying, why (and he’s speaking to the crowd) why are you amazed at this? What’s so surprising about this? Why are you flocking together like this? What is the big deal? Why are you so surprised? And he uses that as a lead in about Jesus. This is what Jesus was doing and you rejected and crucified him. But his spirit of still with us and this is still happening. God is doing something in this world through Jesus. Now, Jesus basically foretold all of this when he said essentially all of the things that you’ve seen me do, you can do all of this. You can do greater than this because I’m going to the Father. So, Peter and John are in the temple complex simply moving forward. This is what Jesus told them would happen and so Peter speaks up, he’s like, why are you so surprised? I’ve spent a lot of time wrestling with stuff like this because I can read the story and then I can listen to Peter say, why are you amazed by this, what’s so surprising. And I can say, well because it’s surprising. I wasn’t expecting this kind of outpouring of God’s power. That’s why I’m amazed. That’s why I’m surprised. But the point that Peter seems to be making is this shouldn’t surprise you. It’s a rhetorical question because Jesus had said this was all gonna happen. So, on one hand, we can look at Jesus and say, well, when Jesus did this kind of stuff, of course it was Jesus, so he could do this kind of stuff. So, he has a pass, even though he’s fully human, he has a pass. He’s Jesus, the son of God. It changes though, when Peter and John are involved, when other people are involved, because Jesus isn’t doing it physically. So how does that work. And the normal way to look at it is the power of the Holy Spirit. That is what happened. And then that’s what Peter said. It wasn’t their power, it was the power of the name of Jesus. Okay, so push pause on that for a second and let’s just understand that as we go into the book of Acts, as we are now in that time period, we are post Jesus earthly ministry and in the age where the church formed and developed. We are still in that time. We’re reading the story of the very beginning of it. But it has continued on until now. So, we do have to ask ourselves why it is that we would be surprised that there is power in the name of Jesus through the power of his Holy Spirit at work on this earth through us? I mean, the surprise kind of speaks into our doubt, doesn’t it? Doesn’t it speak directly to our doubt because the surprise that there is power in the name of Jesus whether in the book of Acts or in our own lives essentially means that we were shocked because we did not expect that to happen when Jesus said basically to expect it to happen. And Peter basically just re-iterated that when he’s talking to this man who couldn’t walk and then could. What if we got to the place where we weren’t surprised when God showed up in one way or another? Why are we always praying and then surprised? What if it weren’t a surprise? What if it were normal because it was ordinary and normal for Jesus? In fact, Jesus spent a lot of time downplaying this kind of stuff. Telling people, keep this on the down low. Don’t go back into the village. Go home a different way. Your faith has made you whole. But he’s constantly keeping people from spreading the word about these kinds of things because they seem to be normal things for Jesus. And then we see that continuing into the life of the very early church. So, what would life be like if we were following the lead of the Holy Spirit, which we ask for in prayer every day? What if we were following the lead of the Holy Spirit and we weren’t surprised by the presence of the Lord? It was normal. This was our normal way of going through life in God’s presence where, according to the gospel of Luke, all things are possible. That would take a bit of work. Work that would begin with some self-reflection, understanding our influences, the things that are leading us to doubt, the culture that is pressing in on us and just kind of guiding us on the wave forward. We might have to change quite a few things to become aware of God’s presence continually to the point that nothing would surprise us. It would be normal. And I’m not talking about just running around doing miraculous healings and signs and wonders and stuff like that. We love that kind of stuff. We sort for that kind of stuff because it’s supernatural. But what if it’s not supernatural? What if, when we look at Jesus knowing that he is intertwined with the Father and fully human, that operating in this life on planet earth without sin, perfectly, even though the world is fallen. What if the stuff that he does is what is supposed to be normal? Because he seems to tell us that it is. So what if this aspiration that we have to become Christlike, that we make just sort of the devotional aim of our lives, like, Yeah, I should try to behave more like Jesus, what if that weren’t what Christlike actually is? What if Christlike is actually like Christ? Because as we will see when we get into the writings of the Apostle Paul, that’s exactly what he’s suggesting. Jesus is the first born into a re-integrated family of God. What happened at the fall, separation between God and man, that divide was bridged through Jesus so that mankind and God are reunited. That is like orthodox Christianity 101. How is it that we have made this a devotional aspiration as opposed to a frank and stark reality that the old has passed away and we have been crucified with Christ and it is no longer we who live but Christ who lives within us? If those things are true, then we shouldn’t be surprised that the presence of God and anything that happens because of the presence of God. So, put that in your pipe and smoke it today because it’s very disruptive because it shows us that we’re settling, right? That the Almighty power and presence of God is all around us and within us, his Spirit. In fact, the Bible would tell us the same spirit that raised Christ from the dead dwells in us. So yeah, in that light , why would anything like this surprise us? Why would we be surprised when we read these stories in the Scriptures and why would be we be surprised at the presence of God in our lives?

Prayer:

Father, we invite Your Holy Spirit to come and that shakes things up. It makes us have to reconsider a lot of things that we’ve just gone along with and it would force us to change a significant number of things in our lives to move forward in Your presence continually. And, so, this is a wakeup call. It’s disruptive. It shakes us. It invites us to consider what it is that we think is true, what the Scriptures are telling us. And, so, we invite Your Holy Spirit. Come Holy Spirit, lead us into all truth. Lead us deeper into Jesus. Lead us on the narrow path that leads to life. And whatever comes as a result of that will be right and good and true and light and good news that the kingdom (is) on earth as it is in heaven. Come, Holy Spirit, and let this come to us, we pray. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hi family this is His Little Sharee in Canada and I have really appreciated those who have called in with thirty-day challenges and other series of prayers and it’s inspired me to ask, what can I do? What do I have to contribute? And, so, I’ve decided to call in on the first of each month to share something from what I call the banqueting table of prayer because there’s so many different ways to pray. So, each month I want to share with you a creative prayer idea. So, here’s a creative way to pray for those who enjoy gardening and plants. You can choose a small plant or grow one from a seed and every time you water that plant say a simple prayer for someone, someone that you know, that God would pour out His Spirit on them and help them to grow. And this is especially appropriate to pray for someone who may be a new Christian. Or how about using an aloe Vera plant for someone who needs healing. Then, after a period of time as you’ve prayed and the plant has grown you can give that plant as a gift to the person you were praying for and you can tell them that this is their prayer plant or you can just bless them with a lovely gift. And I’m sure that you can think of many different versions of this kind of prayer. So, that’s June’s sampling from the banqueting table of prayer. Prayer plants. And I’ll call in with another idea next month. God bless you family. Bye for now.

Hello family. My name is Stephanie and I am a first-time caller. And I’m just, we’re going through a lot. So, I just wanted to reach out to my family. First, I just want to tell everybody all around the world what an amazing, amazing thing this is. When I listen, I try to listen daily, that we’re connected from all around the world. It is truly mind blowing, followers of Christ, Christ our King. Just so thankful. Anyway, so, my family, we need miracles right now. I’m just, my voice is even shaking, I’m just…I’m just shaken up by so many things, it’s just been, it’s been an incredible two years for this family. I have been a stay at home mom, homeschool mom of our five amazing children who know the Lord and my husband is, I want to give too many details, but he’s been an advertising photographer. And we lost our best client, which was our annual salary for our entire family and we haven’t made that up. So, we lost our home last March. We had to move into a rental house and we have been given 30 days out of this rental house to find a home. We’re a huge family. We’re 8 people. And we’re…I’m just…I’m asking prayer that we just, it’s just too much for me. My husband’s work still hasn’t come back to normal. So, we just need God to show up. And I’m just so thankful that I can ask my family to come alongside us and pray for us. We need miracles right now. We might, if we are supposed to be relocating because we remove is very expensive. But what right now where just pressed and I’m just asking for prayer for all of this. And everything has been affected, the kids…

Hello. My name is Dennis from Palos Verdes. I’m just calling because I’m at a place where I need prayer for my marriage, my wife, myself. We’ve suffered the loss of our son a couple years ago and things have been hard to say the least. We’re both very strong in our faith. We both love each other very much. We both are struggling though, to get to that new normal, whatever that is to find out whatever God has for us. We have good times. We love each other. We want to be together. We want to find whatever God is doing in our lives, but I’m just asking for prayer for us to give us strength and renew us in His word and just help us along. I don’t know. I’m just looking to lift her up, lift myself up, and continue to go down this path together. I ask for that, please. In Jesus’ name I pray for this. Amen.

Hi family. This is Dolly from Massachusetts and I wanted to ask you to please pray for my friend Elizabeth in Orlando. She’s been looking for a permanent job and a place to live for a while. And where she’s living now, it’s not working out very well and she needs to leave by today. And she has nowhere to go. She doesn’t want to go to a shelter. And she hasn’t been able to find a room to rent through her church or anywhere around where she lives. And she was hoping to find an apartment and it looked like it was going to work out but things didn’t quite work out in the end. Please lift her up and pray for her. God has a plan for her. And please help her see the doors that need opening for her and the path that He has her on. And please pray that He will appear in the 11th hour and she’ll have a place to go. And family, please pray with me for everyone who listens to the Daily Audio Bible and everyone who’s touched the Daily Audio Bible, for the people who do not call in with a prayer request. Lord, You know the financial struggles that we’re having. You know the problems that we’re having in marriages and our relationships. You know those of us who are waiting for our children to come home. You know those of us who are waiting for our children to come to You. And Father God You know those of us who are waiting for jobs and those of us who have health problems, those of us who are sitting by our loved ones waiting for them to die. And our hearts are breaking. Lord, please comfort us in these times when we seek You. Please open doors for us Father God. Heal our hearts and our minds and our bodies. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

2 Samuel 23:24-24:25

24 Asahel the brother of Joab was one of the thirty; then Elhanan the son of Dodo of Bethlehem, 25 Shammah of Harod, Elika of Harod, 26 Helez the Paltite, Ira the son of Ikkesh of Tekoa, 27 Abiezer of Anathoth, Mebunnai the Hushathite, 28 Zalmon the Ahohite, Maharai of Netophah, 29 Heleb the son of Baanah of Netophah, Ittai the son of Ribai of Gibeah of the Benjamites, 30 Benaiah of Pirathon, Hiddai of the brooks of Gaash, 31 Abi-albon the Arbathite, Azmaveth the Barhumite, 32 Eliahba of Shaalbon, the sons of Jashen, Jonathan, 33 Shammah the Hararite, Ahiam the son of Sharar the Ararite, 34 Eliphelet the son of Ahasbai the son of Maacah, Eliam the son of Ahithophel of Giloh, 35 Hezro (Hezrai) of Carmel, Paarai the Arbite, 36 Igal the son of Nathan of Zobah, Bani the Gadite, 37 Zelek the Ammonite, Naharai of Beeroth, armor bearer of Joab the son of Zeruiah, 38 Ira the Ithrite, Gareb the Ithrite, 39 Uriah the Hittite—thirty-seven in all.

The Census Taken

24 Now again the anger of the Lord burned against Israel, and [a]He incited David against them to say, “Go, [b]count [the people of] Israel and Judah.” So the king said to Joab the commander of the army who was with him, “Go now through all the tribes of Israel, from Dan [in the north] to Beersheba [in the south], and conduct a census of the people, so that I may know the number of the people.” But Joab said to the king, “May the Lord your God add to the people a hundred times as many as there are, and let the eyes of my lord the king see it; but why does my lord the king [c]want to do this thing?” Nevertheless, the king’s word prevailed against Joab and the commanders of the army. So they went from the king’s presence to take a census of the people of Israel. They crossed over the Jordan and camped in Aroer, on the south side of the city which is in the middle of the river valley [of the Arnon] toward Gad, and on toward Jazer. Then they came to Gilead and to the land of Tahtim-hodshi, and they came to Dan-jaan and around to Sidon, and they came to the stronghold of Tyre and to all the cities of the Hivites and Canaanites, and they went out to the south of Judah, to Beersheba. So when they had gone about through all the land [taking the census], they came to Jerusalem at the end of nine months and twenty days. And Joab gave the sum of the census of the people to the king. In Israel there were 800,000 valiant men who drew the sword, and the men of Judah were 500,000.

10 But David’s heart (conscience) troubled him after he had counted the people. David said to the Lord, “I have sinned greatly in what I have done. But now, O Lord, please take away the sin of Your servant, for I have acted very foolishly.” 11 When David got up in the morning, the word of the Lord came to the prophet Gad, David’s seer, saying, 12 “Go and say to David, ‘Thus says the Lord, “I am giving you three choices; select one of them for yourself, and I will do it to you.”’” 13 So Gad came to David and told him, and said to him, “Shall seven years of famine come to you in your land? Or will you flee three months before your enemies as they pursue you? Or shall there be three days of pestilence (plague) in your land? Now consider this and decide what answer I shall return to Him who sent me.” 14 Then David said to Gad, “I am in great distress. Let us fall into the hands of the Lord, for His mercies are great, but do not let me fall into the hands of man.”

Pestilence Sent

15 So the Lord sent a pestilence (plague) [lasting three days] upon Israel from the morning until the appointed time, and seventy thousand men of the people from Dan to Beersheba died. 16 When the [avenging] angel stretched out his hand toward Jerusalem to destroy it, the Lord relented from the disaster and said to the angel who destroyed the people, “It is enough! Now relax your hand.” And the angel of the Lord was by the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite. 17 When David saw the angel who was striking down the people, he spoke to the Lord and said, “Behold, I [alone] am the one who has sinned and done wrong; but these sheep (people of Israel), what have they done [to deserve this]? Please let Your hand be [only] against me and my father’s house (family).”

David Builds an Altar

18 Then Gad [the prophet] came to David that day and said to him, “Go up, set up an altar to the Lord on the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite [where you saw the angel].” 19 So David went up according to Gad’s word, as the Lord commanded. 20 Araunah looked down and saw the king and his servants crossing over toward him; and he went out and bowed before the king with his face toward the ground. 21 Araunah said, “Why has my lord the king come to his servant?” And David said, “To buy the threshing floor from you, to build an altar to the Lord, so that the plague may be held back from the people.” 22 Araunah said to David, “Let my lord the king take and offer up whatever seems good to him. Look, here are oxen for the burnt offering, and threshing sledges and the yokes of the oxen for the wood. 23 All of this, O king, Araunah gives to the king.” And Araunah said to the king, “May the Lord your God be favorable to you.” 24 But the king said to Araunah, “No, but I will certainly buy it from you for a price. I will not offer burnt offerings to the Lord my God which cost me nothing.” So David purchased the [d]threshing floor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver. 25 David built an altar to the Lord there, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. So the Lord was moved [to compassion] by [David’s] prayer for the land, and the plague was held back from Israel.

Footnotes:

  1. 2 Samuel 24:1 See 1 Chr 21:1. As in the case of Paul’s thorn in the flesh (2 Cor 12:7; cf 1 Cor 5:5), God sometimes accomplishes His purposes by allowing Satan to inflict injury or cause trouble.
  2. 2 Samuel 24:1 Ordinarily taking a census would have been a routine procedure for a nation as a way of assessing taxes or conscripting and assigning men to an army. But in Israel none of this was necessary unless it was commanded by God, and David’s action was the product of ego and an uncharacteristic shift of trust and dependence from God to human resources (as Joab suspected, v 3). To his credit, David eventually realized this and came to God in repentance.
  3. 2 Samuel 24:3 Lit delight in.
  4. 2 Samuel 24:24 Later Solomon would build his temple on this site.

Acts 3

Healing the Lame Beggar

Now Peter and John were going up to the temple at the hour of prayer, the ninth hour (3:00 p.m.), and a man who had been unable to walk from birth was being carried along, whom they used to set down every day at that gate of the temple which is called [a]Beautiful, so that he could beg alms from those entering the temple. So when he saw Peter and John about to go into the temple, he began asking [them] for coins. But Peter, along with John, stared at him intently and said, “Look at us!” And the man began to pay attention to them, eagerly expecting to receive something from them. But Peter said, “Silver and gold I do not have; but what I do have I give to you: In the name (authority, power) of Jesus Christ the Nazarene—[begin now to] walk and go on walking!” Then he seized the man’s right hand with a firm grip and raised him up. And at once his feet and ankles became strong and steady, and with a leap he stood up and began to walk; and he went into the temple with them, walking and leaping and praising God. All the people saw him walking and praising God; 10 and they recognized him as the very man who usually sat begging for coins at the Beautiful Gate of the temple, and they were filled with wonder and amazement and were mystified at what had happened to him.

Peter’s Second Sermon

11 Now while he was still holding on to Peter and John, all the people, utterly amazed, ran together and crowded around them at the covered porch called Solomon’s portico. 12 And Peter, seeing this, said to the people, “You men of Israel, why are you amazed at this? Why are you staring at us, as though by our own power or godliness we had made this man walk? 13 The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the God of our fathers, has glorified His Servant and Son Jesus [doing Him this honor], the One whom you handed over and disowned and rejected before Pilate, when he had decided to release Him.(A) 14 But you disowned and denied the Holy and Righteous One and asked for [the pardon of] a murderer to be granted to you. 15 But you killed the Prince (Author, Originator, Source) of life, whom God raised [bodily] from the dead. To this [fact] we are witnesses [for we have seen the risen Christ]. 16 And on the basis of faith in His name, it is the name of Jesus which has strengthened this man whom you see and know; and the faith which comes through Him has given him this perfect health and complete wholeness in your presence.

17 “Now, brothers, I know that you acted in ignorance [not fully aware of what you were doing], just as your rulers did also. 18 And so God has fulfilled what He foretold by the mouth of all the prophets, that His Christ (Messiah, Anointed) would suffer. 19 So repent [change your inner self—your old way of thinking, regret past sins] and return [to God—seek His purpose for your life], so that your sins may be wiped away [blotted out, completely erased], so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord [restoring you like a cool wind on a hot day]; 20 and that He may send [to you] Jesus, the Christ, who has been appointed for you, 21 whom heaven must keep until the time for the [complete] restoration of all things about which God promised through the mouth of His holy prophets from ancient time. 22 Moses said, ‘The Lord God will raise up for you a Prophet [b]like me from your countrymen; you shall listen to Him and obey everything He tells you. 23 And it will be that every person that does not listen to and heed that Prophet will be utterly destroyed from among the people.’(B) 24 Indeed, all the prophets who have spoken, from Samuel and those who came after him, also announced these days. 25 You are the sons (descendants) of the prophets and [heirs] of the covenant which God made with your fathers, saying to Abraham, ‘And in your seed (descendant) all the families of the earth shall be blessed.’(C) 26 It was for you first of all that God raised up His Servant and Son [Jesus], and sent Him to bless you by turning every one of you from your wicked ways.”(D)

Psalm 123

Prayer for the Lord’s Help.

A Song of [a]Ascents.

123 Unto you I lift up my eyes,
O You who are enthroned in the heavens!

Behold, as the eyes of servants look to the hand of their master,
And as the eyes of a maid to the hand of her mistress,
So our eyes look to the Lord our God,
Until He is gracious and favorable toward us.

Be gracious to us, O Lord, be gracious and favorable toward us,
For we are greatly filled with contempt.

Our soul is greatly filled
With the scoffing of those who are at ease,
And with the contempt of the proud [who disregard God’s law].

Proverbs 16:21-23

21
The wise in heart will be called understanding,
And sweet speech increases persuasiveness and learning [in both speaker and listener].
22
Understanding (spiritual insight) is a [refreshing and boundless] wellspring of life to those who have it,
But to give instruction and correction to fools is foolishness.
23
The heart of the wise instructs his mouth [in wisdom]
And adds persuasiveness to his lips.
