Ezekiel 12:1-14:11

Ezekiel Plays Out Israel’s Exile

12 Yahweh spoke his word to me. He said, “Son of man, you are living among rebellious people. They have eyes, but they can’t see. They have ears, but they can’t hear because they are rebellious people.

“Son of man, pack your bags as if you were going into exile. Let the people see you leave in the daylight. March like a captive from your place to another place as they watch. Maybe they will understand, even though they are rebellious people. Let them see you in the daylight. Bring out your bags as if you were going into exile. In the evening let them see you leave like a captive going into exile. Dig a hole through the wall of your house, and leave through it. Let them see you put your bags on your shoulders and carry them out in the dark. Cover your face so that you won’t see the land. I’ve made you a sign to warn the nation of Israel.”

I did what I was ordered to do. During the day I brought out bags as if I were going into exile. In the evening I dug a hole through the wall. I brought out my bags in the dark. I let the people see me as I carried my bags on my shoulders.

The next morning Yahweh spoke his word to me. He said, “Son of man, didn’t the rebellious nation of Israel ask you what you were doing?

10 “Tell them, ‘This is what Adonay Yahweh says: This is the divine revelation about the prince from Jerusalem and about all the people of Israel who live there.’

11 “Tell them, ‘I am your warning sign. What I have done will happen to you. You will go into exile and into captivity. 12 The prince who is among you will put his bags on his shoulders in the dark and leave. People will dig holes in the wall to go through. The prince will cover his face so that he cannot see the land. 13 I will spread my net over him, and he will be caught in my net. I will bring him to Babylon, the land of the Babylonians, but he will not see it. And that’s where he’ll die. 14 I will scatter in every direction all those who are around him—his staff and all his troops. I will pursue them with my sword. 15 Then they will know that I am Yahweh, because I will scatter them among the nations and force them into other countries. 16 However, I will spare a few of them from wars, famines, and plagues. Wherever they go among the nations, they will realize that everything they did was disgusting. Then they will know that I am Yahweh.’”

17 Yahweh spoke his word to me. He said, 18 “Son of man, shake as you eat your food. Tremble and be worried as you drink your water.

19 “Tell the people of this land, ‘This is what Adonay Yahweh says about the people who live in Jerusalem and in the land of Israel: They will be worried as they eat their food and terrified as they drink their water. Their country will be stripped of everything because everyone who lives there is violent. 20 The cities where people live will be destroyed, and the country will become a wasteland. Then they will know that I am Yahweh.’”

21 Yahweh spoke his word to me. He said, 22 “Son of man, what is this proverb you have in Israel: ‘Days go by, and every vision comes to nothing’?

23 “Tell the people, ‘This is what Adonay Yahweh says: I will put a stop to the use of this proverb. You will no longer quote it in Israel.’ Instead, tell them, ‘The time is near when every vision will come true. 24 There will no longer be any false visions or flattering fortunetelling to the people. 25 I, Yahweh, will speak. Everything that I say will happen without any more delay. I will say something, and it will happen during your lifetime, you rebellious people, declares Adonay Yahweh.’”

26 Yahweh spoke his word to me. He said, 27 “Son of man, the people of Israel are saying, ‘The vision that Ezekiel sees won’t happen for a long time. What he prophecies will happen in the distant future.’

28 “Tell them, ‘This is what Adonay Yahweh says: Everything that I say will no longer be delayed. Whatever I say will happen, declares Adonay Yahweh.’”

False Prophets Condemned

13 Yahweh spoke his word to me. He said, “Son of man, prophesy against the prophets of Israel. Tell those who make up their prophecies, ‘Listen to the word of Yahweh.

“‘This is what Adonay Yahweh says: How horrible it will be for the foolish prophets. They follow their own ideas, and they have seen nothing. Israel, your prophets are like foxes among the ruins of a city. They haven’t repaired the gaps in the wall or rebuilt the wall for the nation of Israel. So Israel will not be protected in battle on the day of Yahweh. These foolish prophets see false visions, and their predictions don’t come true. They say, “Yahweh said this.” But Yahweh hasn’t sent them. Then they hope that their message will come true. Prophets of Israel, haven’t you seen false visions and predicted things that don’t come true? Don’t you say, “Yahweh said this,” even though I haven’t said anything?

“‘This is what Adonay Yahweh says: Your predictions are false, and your visions are lies. That is why I’m against you, declares Adonay Yahweh. I will use my power against the prophets who see false visions and predict things that don’t come true. They will not help my people make decisions or be recorded in the records of the nation of Israel. They won’t even enter Israel. Then you will know that I am Adonay Yahweh.

10 “‘They have deceived my people by saying that everything is alright, but it’s not alright. When someone builds a flimsy wall, the prophets cover it up with paint. 11 Tell those who cover up the wall with paint that their wall will fall down. Rain will pour down, hailstones will fall on it, and stormy winds will break it to pieces. 12 When the wall falls down, people will ask them, “Where’s the paint that you used to cover the wall?”

13 “‘This is what Adonay Yahweh says: In my fury I’ll cause a storm to break out. In my anger rain will pour down, and hailstones will destroy the wall. 14 I will tear down the wall that the prophets covered up with paint. I will level it and expose its foundation. When the wall falls, they will be destroyed by it. Then you will know that I am Yahweh. 15 I will unleash my fury on the wall and on those who covered it up with paint.

“‘Then I will say to you, “The wall is gone, and so are those who painted it. 16 The prophets of Israel who prophesied to Jerusalem are gone. Those who said that everything was alright, when it wasn’t alright, are gone, declares Adonay Yahweh.” ’

17 “Son of man, look at the women among your people who make up prophecies, and prophesy against them.

18 “Tell them, ‘This is what Adonay Yahweh says: How horrible it will be for women who sew magic charms for people’s wrists and make magic veils of every size for people’s heads. You want to trap people. You want to control the lives of my people for your own profit. 19 You dishonor me in front of my people for a few handfuls of barley and a few pieces of bread. You kill people who shouldn’t die, and you spare the lives of people who shouldn’t live. You lie to my people who are willing to listen.

20 “‘This is what Adonay Yahweh says: I’m against the magic charms that you use to trap people like birds. I will tear them from your arms and free the people that you have trapped. 21 I will tear off your magic veils and rescue my people from your power so that they will no longer be under your control. Then you will know that I am Yahweh. 22 You have discouraged righteous people with your lies, even though I hadn’t brought them any grief. You encouraged wicked people not to turn from their wicked ways to save their lives. 23 That is why you will no longer see false visions or make predictions. I will rescue my people from your power. Then you will know that I am Yahweh.’”

Idolaters Condemned

14 Some of Israel’s leaders came to me and sat down in front of me. Then Yahweh spoke his word to me. He said, “Son of man, these people are devoted to their idols, and they are allowing themselves to fall into sin. Should they be allowed to ask me for help?

“So speak to them. Tell them, ‘This is what Adonay Yahweh says: Suppose an Israelite is devoted to idols and allows himself to fall into sin. Suppose he goes to a prophet to ask for my help. I, Yahweh, will give that Israelite an answer, the answer that his many idols deserve. I will do this to recapture the hearts of the nation of Israel. They have deserted me because of their disgusting idols.’

“So tell the nation of Israel, ‘This is what Adonay Yahweh says: Change the way you think and act! Turn away from your idols, and don’t return to any of your disgusting things. Suppose an Israelite or a foreigner who lives in Israel deserts me by devoting himself to idols and by allowing himself to fall into sin. If he goes to a prophet to ask for my help, I, Yahweh, will give him an answer. I will reject him, and I will make an example of him. I will exclude him from my people. Then you will know that I am Yahweh.

“‘If a prophet is tricked into giving a prophecy, it is I, Yahweh, who tricked the prophet. I will use my power against you and destroy you from among my people Israel. 10 Both of you will suffer for your sins. The prophet will be as guilty as you are when you ask for his help. 11 Then the people of Israel will no longer wander away from me. They will no longer dishonor me with all their sins. Then they will be my people, and I will be their Elohim, declares Adonay Yahweh.’”

Hebrews 7:1-17

Christ Is Superior to Melchizedek

Melchizedek was king of Salem and priest of the Most High God. He met Abraham and blessed him when Abraham was returning from defeating the kings. Abraham gave Melchizedek a tenth of everything he had captured.

In the first place, Melchizedek’s name means king of righteousness. He is also called king of Salem (which means king of peace). No one knows anything about Melchizedek’s father, mother, or ancestors. No one knows when he was born or when he died. Like the Son of God, Melchizedek continues to be a priest forever.

You can see how important Melchizedek was. Abraham gave him a tenth of what he had captured, even though Abraham was the father of the chosen people. Moses’ Teachings say that members of the tribe of Levi who become priests must receive a tenth of everything from the people. The priests collect it from their own people, Abraham’s descendants. Although Melchizedek was not from the tribe of Levi, he received a tenth of everything from Abraham. Then Melchizedek blessed Abraham, who had God’s promises. No one can deny that the more important person blesses the less important person.

Priests receive a tenth of everything, but they die. Melchizedek received a tenth of everything, but we are told that he lives. We could even say that when Abraham gave Melchizedek a tenth of everything, Levi was giving a tenth of everything. Levi gave, although later his descendants would receive a tenth of everything. 10 Even though Levi had not yet been born, he was in the body of Abraham when Melchizedek met him.

11 The people established the Levitical priesthood based on instructions they received. If the work of the Levitical priests had been perfect, we wouldn’t need to speak about another kind of priest. However, we speak about another kind of priest, a priest like Melchizedek, not a Levitical priest like Aaron.

12 When a different kind of priesthood is established, the regulations for those priests are different. 13 The priest whom we are talking about was a member of a different tribe. No one from that tribe ever served as a priest at the altar. 14 Everyone knows that our Lord came from the tribe of Judah. Moses never said anything about priests coming from that tribe. 15 The regulations were different. This became clear when a different priest who is like Melchizedek appeared. 16 That person is a priest, not because he met human requirements, but because he has power that comes from a life that cannot be destroyed. 17 The Scriptures say the following about him: “You are a priest forever, in the way Melchizedek was a priest.”

Psalm 105:37-45

37 He brought Israel out with silver and gold,
and no one among his tribes stumbled.
38 The Egyptians were terrified of Israel,
so they were glad when Israel left.
39 He spread out a cloud as a protective covering
and a fire to light up the night.
40 The Israelites asked, and he brought them quail
and filled them with bread from heaven.
41 He opened a rock, and water gushed
and flowed like a river through the dry places.

42 He remembered his holy promise to his servant Abraham.
43 He brought his people out with joy,
his chosen ones with a song of joy.
44 He gave them the lands of other nations,
and they inherited what others had worked for
45 so that they would obey his laws
and follow his teachings.

Hallelujah!

Ezekiel 10:1-11:25, Hebrews 6:1-20, Psalms 105:16-36, Proverbs 27:1-2

Today is the 4th day of November. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian. It’s great to be here with you and we turn [that was me, clapping my hands and rubbing together] we’re turning the knob, we’re walking through the threshold into a brand-new, sparkly week. This will be our first full week in this brand-new month, the 11th month of the year, also known as November. And this week we’ll read from the Names of God Bible. And, so, those of you who have been around while, we’ve read from this translation before. Those of you are new, here’s how this will read. It will read in English like we do every day here; however, we have to acknowledge that the Bible in its original language was not English. The Old Testament in its original form would’ve been in Hebrew and the New Testament in its original manuscripts are largely Greek. So, since these are the original languages when we refer to God we’ll be saying it in its original pronunciation as the original readers would have. So, for example, we say the name Jesus and that’s common and we understand what we’re talking about and yet probably not unfamiliar with the fact that if we pronounce this in Hebrew would be saying Yeshua. In the Old Testament there are many names for God, things like Jehovah or like Yahweh. So, when we come to one of those names in this translation we’ll have it in its original pronunciation. Other than that, we’ll be picking up where we left off yesterday, Ezekiel chapter 10 verse 1 through 11 verse 25 today.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word and we thank You for the brand-new week that we’re walking into. And we look forward in this week to all that You will speak to us through Your word as You do every week. And in advance, we invite Your Holy Spirit into every aspect, not only of what we might read in the Scriptures, but every aspect of our lives, every thought and intent of our hearts, every word that will form from those intents and intentions that will be spoken into the world this week, every action that we will take because of the intents of our heart. May they be pleasing to You. May they be in alignment with Your will and Your ways in our lives and in the world. May we walk with You in perfect union this week. May this be a great week in our relationship, one that we’ll remember. Come Holy Spirit we pray. In Jesus’ name we ask. Amen.

In the name Your son Jesus Christ our Lord and our Savior. Amen.

Hello Daily Audio Bible family, this is Alfi calling from Delaware. It’s unbelievable that it’s already November. So, as a new month begins I have a prayer for everyone in this wonderful community. My prayer for each one of you is that, may the thoughts of doubt, the feelings of defeat, may all the entanglements of the evil one, and if there’s anything else that the devil puts in our hearts, may it be closed, may that chapter be closed. As we walk in the narrow path may we remember that God is a God of second chances. So, I pray the new doors of grace, many different opportunities for each one of you open up. May we believe in the faith of the __ that we are more than conquerors because we have Jesus on our side. May we also embrace the abilities and the talents that God has instilled in us because He has enabled us to live the life that He planned for us to live. May we embrace that. And it doesn’t matter how the year started or how the year has been for you. Yes, you may have failed along the way, made many mistakes, we all do. But I pray that we can finish strong this year and know that God still holds your hand no matter how you feel, no matter what circumstances that you face. Daily Audio Bible family, let us believe, let us walk in the light…

Hello Daily Audio Bible family. This is Cindy the Sinner from Seattle. I have that name because everybody remembers it. And I’ve been to a couple of Daily Audio Bible events this year. I went to the More conference and I went to the very first family reunion. And my praise report is that when you go your life will be so enriched by the people you meet. So, the praise is for all of those people I met. I am not going to rush down the list to say your name, but if you remember me, know that I have thought about you since I met you and you brought joy to my life at those events. So, thank you. I wanted to share with all of you a pervasive thought that I have had over the last few days. It’s whenever I’m looking at my phone I hear God’s voice telling me, please look up, you’re going to miss what I want to show you. So, I encourage all of you to take your eyes off your phone. I see people every day reading their phones everywhere. And I could argue that the phones for a lot of us have become an idol. And I also want to read this great quote from Role Doll, one of my favorite authors, which is, “and above all, watch with glittering eyes the whole world around you because the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places. Those who don’t believe in magic will never find it.” Role doll. So, every single day is a gift. And my new mantra is that every day God has new treasures in every day. And I get to find them and recollect them at the end of the day. And I wish all of you the best day and that you find many, many treasures. God, bless.

Hey everybody, this is Pelham from Birmingham right now because I live in Coleman but I work in Birmingham. I’m calling today because I need you all’s help. That’s why I always call but I don’t always say that. First though, I need to thank everybody out there that’s been praying for me. I always get into my call and I look at the clock, I’m like, nope, I’ve got eight seconds and I’m like, well I can’t think anybody because I’ve got about 237 people to thank I think. Melissa in Albertville I think it is, you’re in Alabama. I got to holler out to you girl. You’re awesome. You’re awesome. You make my days better. We’ve gone through this like a family, through Asia’s heart and walking with Asia through this and it’s been amazing to watch the community. And then to hear from Asia herself, how overwhelmed she is at the outpouring of support that she’s noticed and that we’ve all been a part of. It’s just a testimony right there to those of you who’ve been afraid a call and maybe you think your problem is too small or what you’re facing isn’t important or you’re not important. That right there, is your signal that you need to call that you need to reach out on Facebook, that you need to connect with the community because there’s something trying to keep you from doing it. So, I love you guys so much. My family needs your prayers. My wife needs your prayers, my son, I do, the pizza place needs  ya’lls prayers. We need Mr. Quick to make a move. That’s all I’m gonna say. My investor, I need a little bit more urgency, let’s put it that way because times going by and people need pizza. I serve the best pizza on earth and it’s a shame that I’m not open right now to do it. I need you all’s prayers. I covet them and I needed to tell you this stuff. Love you guys.

Ezekiel 10-11

The Glory of the Lord Leaves His Temple

10 As I looked at the dome over the heads of the angels,[a] I saw something that looked like a throne made of sapphire. Yahweh said to the person dressed in linen, “Go between the wheels under the angels, and fill your hands with burning coals. Then scatter them over the city.” So he went between the wheels as I watched.

The angels were standing on the south side of the temple as the person went. A cloud filled the inner courtyard. Yahweh’s glory rose from the angels to the entrance of the temple, the cloud filled the temple, and the brightness of Yahweh’s glory filled the courtyard. The sound of the angels’ wings was heard as far as the outer courtyard. It was like the sound of El Shadday when he speaks.

After Yahweh had commanded the person dressed in linen to take burning coals from between the wheels beside the angels, the person went in and stood beside one of the wheels. One of the angels reached into the fire that was between the angels and took out some coals. This angel put them in the hands of the person dressed in linen. The person took them and left.

The angels appeared to have what looked like human hands under their wings. As I looked, I saw four wheels beside the angels, one wheel beside each of the angels. The wheels looked like beryl. 10 All four wheels looked the same. Each was like a wheel within a wheel. 11 Whenever the angels moved, they moved in any of the four directions without turning as they moved. They always moved in the direction they faced without turning as they moved. 12 Their entire bodies, their backs, hands, wings, and wheels were covered with eyes. Each of the angels had a wheel. 13 I heard that the wheels were called the whirling wheels. 14 Each of the angels had four faces. The first was the face of an angel, the second was the face of a human, the third was the face of a lion, and the fourth was the face of an eagle.

15 The angels rose. These were the living creatures that I saw at the Chebar River. 16 When the angels moved, the wheels moved beside them. When the angels lifted their wings to rise from the ground, the wheels didn’t leave their side. 17 When the angels stood still, the wheels stood still. When the angels rose, the wheels rose with them. The spirit of the living creatures was in the wheels. 18 Then the glory of Yahweh left the temple’s entrance and stood over the angels. 19 The angels lifted their wings and rose from the ground. I was watching them as they left with the wheels beside them. The angels stood at the door to the east gate of Yahweh’s temple, and the glory of the Elohim of Israel was above them.

20 These are the living creatures that I saw under the Elohim of Israel at the Chebar River. I realized that they were angels. 21 Each had four faces and four wings, and under their wings were what looked like human hands. 22 Their faces looked exactly like the faces that I saw by the Chebar River. Each one went straight ahead.

Judgment on the Rulers of Israel

11 Then the Ruach lifted me and took me to the east gate of Yahweh’s temple. (It’s the gate that faces east.) Twenty-five men were at the entrance of the gate. I saw among them Azzur’s son Jaazaniah and Benaiah’s son Pelatiah. They were leaders of the people.

Then Yahweh said to me, “Son of man, these are the men who plan evil and give bad advice in this city. They say, ‘It’s almost time to rebuild homes. This city is a cooking pot, and we’re the meat.’ So prophesy against them. Prophesy, son of man.”

The Ruach Yahweh came to me and told me to say, “This is what Yahweh says: You are saying these things, nation of Israel. But I know what’s going through your mind. You have killed many people in this city and have filled its streets with corpses.

“So this is what Adonay Yahweh says: The corpses that you put in the middle of the city are the meat, and the city is the cooking pot. I will force you out of the city. You are afraid of swords, so I will bring swords to attack you, declares Adonay Yahweh. I will force you out of the city. I will hand you over to foreigners, and I will punish you. 10 You will die in battle. I will judge you at Israel’s borders. Then you will know that I am Yahweh. 11 The city will not be your cooking pot, and you will not be the meat in it. I will judge you at Israel’s borders. 12 Then you will know that I am Yahweh. You haven’t lived by my laws, and you haven’t obeyed my rules. You have followed the standards set by the nations around you.”

13 While I was prophesying, Benaiah’s son Pelatiah died.

I immediately bowed down and cried out, “Adonay Yahweh, will you completely destroy all the remaining people in Israel?”

The Lord’s Promise to Gather Israel from the Nations

14 Then Yahweh spoke his word to me. He said, 15 “Son of man, the people who live in Jerusalem are talking about your own relatives and about the entire nation of Israel. The people who live in Jerusalem say, ‘They are far away from Yahweh. This land has been given to us as our own property.’

16 “So tell them, ‘This is what Adonay Yahweh says: Although I sent them far away among the nations and scattered them among the countries, I have been their sanctuary for a little while among the countries where they’ve gone.’

17 “So tell them, ‘This is what Adonay Yahweh says: I will bring them together from the nations and gather them from the countries where I’ve scattered them. I will give them the land of Israel. 18 They will come and remove all the disgusting and detestable things that are there. 19 I will give them a single purpose and put a new spirit in them. I will remove their stubborn hearts and give them obedient hearts. 20 Then they will live by my laws and obey my rules. They will be my people, and I will be their Elohim. 21 But as for those whose minds are set on following detestable and disgusting idols, I will pay them back for what they have done, declares Adonay Yahweh.’”

The Glory of the Lord Leaves Jerusalem

22 Then the angels[b] raised their wings, with the wheels beside them. The glory of the Elohim of Israel was above them. 23 Yahweh’s glory left the middle of the city and stopped above the mountain east of the city.

24 In this vision from the Ruach Elohim, the Ruach lifted me and brought me to the exiles in Babylonia. Then the vision I saw left me.

25 I told the exiles everything Yahweh had shown me.

Hebrews 6

With this in mind, we should stop going over the elementary truths about Christ and move on to topics for more mature people. We shouldn’t repeat the basics about turning away from the useless things we did and the basics about faith in God. We shouldn’t repeat the basic teachings about such things as baptisms, setting people apart for holy tasks, dead people coming back to life, and eternal judgment. If God permits, we will do this.

Some people once had God’s light. They experienced the heavenly gift and shared in the Holy Spirit. They experienced the goodness of God’s word and the powers of the world to come. Yet, they have deserted Christ. They are crucifying the Son of God again and publicly disgracing him. Therefore, they cannot be led a second time to God.

God blesses the earth. So rain often falls on it, and it produces useful crops for farmers. However, if the earth produces thorns and thistles, it is worthless and in danger of being cursed. In the end it will be burned.

God Will Not Forget You

Dear friends, even though we say these things, we are still convinced that better things are in store for you and that they will save you. 10 God is fair. He won’t forget what you’ve done or the love you’ve shown for him. You helped his holy people, and you continue to help them. 11 We want each of you to prove that you’re working hard so that you will remain confident until the end. 12 Then, instead of being lazy, you will imitate those who are receiving the promises through faith and patience.

13 God made a promise to Abraham. Since he had no one greater on whom to base his oath, he based it on himself. 14 He said, “I will certainly bless you and give you many descendants.” 15 So Abraham received what God promised because he waited patiently for it.

16 When people take oaths, they base their oaths on someone greater than themselves. Their oaths guarantee what they say and end all arguments. 17 God wouldn’t change his plan. He wanted to make this perfectly clear to those who would receive his promise, so he took an oath. 18 God did this so that we would be encouraged. God cannot lie when he takes an oath or makes a promise. These two things can never be changed. Those of us who have taken refuge in him hold on to the confidence we have been given. 19 We have this confidence as a sure and strong anchor for our lives. This confidence goes into the holy place behind the curtain 20 where Yeshua went before us on our behalf. He has become the chief priest forever in the way Melchizedek was a priest.

Psalm 105:16-36

16 He brought famine to the land.
He took away their food supply.
17 He sent a man ahead of them.
He sent Joseph, who was sold as a slave.
18 They hurt his feet with shackles,
and cut into his neck with an iron collar.
19 Yahweh’s promise tested him through fiery trials
until his prediction came true.
20 The king sent someone to release him.
The ruler of nations set him free.
21 He made Joseph the master of his palace
and the ruler of all his possessions.
22 Joseph trained the king’s officers the way he wanted
and taught his respected leaders wisdom.

23 Then Israel came to Egypt.
Jacob lived as a foreigner in the land of Ham.
24 Yahweh made his people grow rapidly in number
and stronger than their enemies.
25 He changed their minds so that they hated his people,
and they dealt treacherously with his servants.
26 He sent his servant Moses, and he sent Aaron, whom he had chosen.
27 They displayed his miraculous signs among them
and did amazing things in the land of Ham.
28 He sent darkness and made their land dark.
They did not rebel against his orders.
29 He turned their water into blood
and caused their fish to die.
30 He made their land swarm with frogs,
even in the kings’ bedrooms.
31 He spoke, and swarms of flies and gnats
infested their whole territory.
32 He gave them hail and lightning
instead of rain throughout their land.
33 He struck their grapevines and fig trees
and smashed the trees in their territory.
34 He spoke, and countless locusts and grasshoppers came.
35 They devoured all the plants in the land.
They devoured the crops in the fields.
36 He killed all the firstborn sons,
the first ones born in the land when their fathers were young.

Proverbs 27:1-2

All about Life

27 Do not brag about tomorrow,
because you do not know what another day may bring.
Praise should come from another person and not from your own mouth,
from a stranger and not from your own lips.

Ezekiel 7:1-9:11, Hebrews 5:1-14, Psalms 105:1-15, Proverbs 26:28

Today is the 3rd day of November. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian. It’s great to be here with you today as we come to the conclusion of another one of our weeks together. And I guess we can say we are fully moved into this 11th month of the year and day by day we will step our way through it as we continue through the Scriptures this year. We’ve been reading from the New Living Translation this week, which it’s still this week, so, we’ll do that today. Ezekiel chapter 7 verse 2 through 9:11 today.

Commentary:

Alright, let’s talk about the proverb that we read today for a second. So, when I was younger, you know,  when I was a teenager, you know, I would get myself into all kinds of things just trying to find my identity. And there would be times my father, and of course I’ve lost my father, you know, he’s been away from us for the last 16 years. And man…I sure wish I could hear him telling me things now. But then, and it echoes through my memory like it was yesterday, when he would observe this, when he would observe me taking a wrong path, he’d say, son nothing good can come from that. And that phrase that still lives on with me in his voice in my head pretty much describes the point of our proverb today. A lying tongue hates its victims and flattering words because ruin and nothing good will come from that. So, I mean, when we’re untruthful or we’re manipulative, even subtly, or we use insincere flattery to nudge a person into some kind of direction that we want them to go, it’s not true and ruin will come and affect everyone involved eventually and nothing good will come from that. So, I mean, so let’s me stark. Since the Proverbs are stark let’s be stark as we think about this. If we have a lying tongue, and by that I mean if we’re a person who’s willing to embellish or diminish or suppress the truth in order to manipulate someone or to protect ourselves or to save face then we have to pay attention. And in one way or another, this means that we all must pay attention deeply. According to the proverb, hate is where this all begins. So, you know, put that in your cup and stir around. In some way, if we’re willing to…if we’re willing to lie or we’re willing to manipulate, then in some way we are displaying hate toward the person we are lying to. And that is pretty heavy because for some of us, you know, reality is sort of porous and I we embellish stories all the time or make them bigger than they are or smaller than they are. I mean, like we’re constantly being untrue is the point. But according to the proverb, if we’re gonna engage in this kind of behavior and we’re gonna be untrue, we’re going to lie then there’s hate. And we hate the person were lying to. And when we use flattery to manipulate our way into someone else’s life for our own gain or for our own need, this is going to eventually cause ruin all the way around. So, it’s a tiny proverb. It’s just 11 words but it packs a massive punch. And if we’ll consider the implications of this proverb in light of our innermost thoughts, right, what’s really going on inside, and our in most desires then we can see how powerful a gift it is, the Proverbs, and how powerful of a gift it is, the Scriptures. And we can see how deeply they challenge us to be aware of the impact we’re having on each other.

Prayer:

Father, we invite you into that, what are the ways that we’re manipulating people for our own gain with false flattery, with manipulative nudging, with flat out lying? We acknowledge Lord, nothing good will come from that and we ask, Father, that you help us to walk away from these behaviors because nothing good will come from it. Come Holy Spirit lead us into all truth so that we are surrounded by the truth and walking in the truth and therefore being true. Come, Holy Spirit we pray. In Jesus’ name we ask. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Good evening DAB family. It’s been a while since I called in and I just wanted to let you know that I’m praying for each of you and I love you all. And it’s so great to listen every day besides the fact that I don’t really call in regularly. Asia, I am so sorry for your loss. I can’t begin to imagine what you’re going through. And I know it’s so hard to make sense of things, but I know that the God we serve, you know, will somehow or another, whether now or later, in another life, you know, will reveal, you know, why, the why that you’re looking for. When that happens __ but when you see Him, He just may. But I know that He’s going to take care of you. I know that He’s going to wrap His arms around you and He will come to the crushed in spirit and broken hearted. The trucker, I’m praying for you, believing that everything is going to be well for you. I’m praying for the father of the 15-year-old pregnant daughter. I was once too, a 15-year-old pregnant child and I can totally relate. I was a child pregnant and the mother of a 15 year old pregnant…unfortunately it’s like a repeat of itself or at least with the first one. And, so, I’m praying for all of you, so many of you, too many mention in one call - Pastor Gene, Victoria Soldier, and others on line, Lisa the Encourager, you know, Candice, you know. You’re all, all, all amazing and just know I’m praying for you. Esther from New York.

Good morning Daily Audio Bible family. I am calling with a praise report. It’s so interesting because the enemy this morning kept telling me not to call. I think I’ve called three times this week and that would be bad…stupid…and I just heard the voice telling me to be obedient. So, I am calling with a praise report. I have called because I was up all night long wrestling with the enemy, but that’s my mind I had shared with you. This is His Beloved by the way from California. But my boys were fighting, we have raccoons keeping us up all night and my husband who had been texting this woman from work all night long that week and was really bothering me. I called for prayer. I had been up all night, wrestling with the enemy in my head. And yesterday, I’m just telling you now, the power of prayer. My raccoons left. The families gone. We slept. The boys were getting on beautifully all night like normal and my husband comes back into bed at 10pm last night and tells me, I’m done texting her, not going to text her any more…out of the blue. So, I just wanted to say, there’s so much power in prayer. Not just prayer guys. I was marching around my house yesterday. My neighbor’s and family think I’m crazy. I was proclaiming, I was saying to my house, we serve the Lord. I was casting demons out of my marital bed, out of my boys’ room. I was taking action, so I don’t let that bug me. I don’t know if that helped anyone, but prayer is awesome, but we have to take action in scripture and I was just claiming my home and my family and my marriage and it’s a praise report. Hallelujah. I love you. I’m praying for all of you every morning. Brian and Jill, as always, God bless you. May the Lord protect and keep you.

Hey family, it’s Shannon from Salem Oregon. I have a couple of praises and a prayer request. One, thank you for praying for my daughter Serena. Shortly after I called and you all started praying, I remember there was a parenting __ and __ class in or area coming up. And, so, my husband and I started attending that and it just gave us the tools we needed at the right time and we were hungry for them and ready to start putting them into practice. And we’ve seen some really good things, not only with Serena but our younger two kids as well. So, that’s been really good. We also had, the kids and I, had a really amazing visit with my uncle. And I was asking you to pray for him before. And, so, the Lord just gave us a really beautiful time together. And I feel like it was a reset for our relationship. And that was just such __. Thank you for the prayer. And my prayer request is, I’m lamenting right now. And I listened to Brian’s explanation about Lamentations and I’m in torment right now. It’s not something as big as the destruction of Jerusalem but the job that my husband’s been in for 14 years, a ministry position. He’s transitioning out of that and it’s something we’ve been praying abut for a while, but just the way it came about was kind of surprising. And it’s been really painful. And we don’t know what’s gonna happen or come next. But I’d love for you to pray for us and our family. I really appreciate it. Thanks, ya’ll. Love you. Bye.

Morning Daily Audio Bible, this is Laura Lee. I really didn’t want to call but I must obey the Holy Spirit. This is for Asia and Joe the Protector as well. When I was 15 I became pregnant and also two other times that…I had abortions. And when I came to the Lord and He revealed the truth of what I had done. I stand forgiven and without condemnation. Well, three years ago I went on a mission trip to the Bahama’s after hurricane Mathew with two young ladies who had suffered miscarriages. And the Lord really was prompting me to share what I had done with them. And I didn’t know why. I didn’t want to. But as I struggled with that sharing He asked me…He let me know that I could name my babies and that they were with Him and that I would see them later. And I was able to share that with the two young ladies. And Asia, I just want you to know that one of the names is Asia. And I will see my little girl __ and you will as well. And I want to thank you both for being people who love God, who know God’s will. And I had to forgive my mom, a whole nation, all the people who weren’t around to tell me who God was and what was happening. And I…I just wanted to share that. I don’t…

Ezekiel 7-9

The Coming of the End

Then this message came to me from the Lord: “Son of man, this is what the Sovereign Lord says to Israel:

“The end is here!
Wherever you look—
east, west, north, or south—
your land is finished.
No hope remains,
for I will unleash my anger against you.
I will call you to account
for all your detestable sins.
I will turn my eyes away and show no pity.
I will repay you for all your detestable sins.
Then you will know that I am the Lord.

“This is what the Sovereign Lord says:
Disaster after disaster
is coming your way!
The end has come.
It has finally arrived.
Your final doom is waiting!
O people of Israel, the day of your destruction is dawning.
The time has come; the day of trouble is near.
Shouts of anguish will be heard on the mountains,
not shouts of joy.
Soon I will pour out my fury on you
and unleash my anger against you.
I will call you to account
for all your detestable sins.
I will turn my eyes away and show no pity.
I will repay you for all your detestable sins.
Then you will know that it is I, the Lord,
who is striking the blow.

10 “The day of judgment is here;
your destruction awaits!
The people’s wickedness and pride
have blossomed to full flower.
11 Their violence has grown into a rod
that will beat them for their wickedness.
None of these proud and wicked people will survive.
All their wealth and prestige will be swept away.
12 Yes, the time has come;
the day is here!
Buyers should not rejoice over bargains,
nor sellers grieve over losses,
for all of them will fall
under my terrible anger.
13 Even if the merchants survive,
they will never return to their business.
For what God has said applies to everyone—
it will not be changed!
Not one person whose life is twisted by sin
will ever recover.

The Desolation of Israel

14 “The trumpet calls Israel’s army to mobilize,
but no one listens,
for my fury is against them all.
15 There is war outside the city
and disease and famine within.
Those outside the city walls
will be killed by enemy swords.
Those inside the city
will die of famine and disease.
16 The survivors who escape to the mountains
will moan like doves, weeping for their sins.
17 Their hands will hang limp,
their knees will be weak as water.
18 They will dress themselves in burlap;
horror and shame will cover them.
They will shave their heads
in sorrow and remorse.

19 “They will throw their money in the streets,
tossing it out like worthless trash.
Their silver and gold won’t save them
on that day of the Lord’s anger.
It will neither satisfy nor feed them,
for their greed can only trip them up.
20 They were proud of their beautiful jewelry
and used it to make detestable idols and vile images.
Therefore, I will make all their wealth
disgusting to them.
21 I will give it as plunder to foreigners,
to the most wicked of nations,
and they will defile it.
22 I will turn my eyes from them
as these robbers invade and defile my treasured land.

23 “Prepare chains for my people,
for the land is bloodied by terrible crimes.
Jerusalem is filled with violence.
24 I will bring the most ruthless of nations
to occupy their homes.
I will break down their proud fortresses
and defile their sanctuaries.
25 Terror and trembling will overcome my people.
They will look for peace but not find it.
26 Calamity will follow calamity;
rumor will follow rumor.
They will look in vain
for a vision from the prophets.
They will receive no teaching from the priests
and no counsel from the leaders.
27 The king and the prince will stand helpless,
weeping in despair,
and the people’s hands
will tremble with fear.
I will bring on them
the evil they have done to others,
and they will receive the punishment
they so richly deserve.
Then they will know that I am the Lord.”

Idolatry in the Temple

Then on September 17,[a] during the sixth year of King Jehoiachin’s captivity, while the leaders of Judah were in my home, the Sovereign Lord took hold of me. I saw a figure that appeared to be a man.[b] From what appeared to be his waist down, he looked like a burning flame. From the waist up he looked like gleaming amber.[c] He reached out what seemed to be a hand and took me by the hair. Then the Spirit lifted me up into the sky and transported me to Jerusalem in a vision from God. I was taken to the north gate of the inner courtyard of the Temple, where there is a large idol that has made the Lord very jealous. Suddenly, the glory of the God of Israel was there, just as I had seen it before in the valley.

Then the Lord said to me, “Son of man, look toward the north.” So I looked, and there to the north, beside the entrance to the gate near the altar, stood the idol that had made the Lord so jealous.

“Son of man,” he said, “do you see what they are doing? Do you see the detestable sins the people of Israel are committing to drive me from my Temple? But come, and you will see even more detestable sins than these!” Then he brought me to the door of the Temple courtyard, where I could see a hole in the wall. He said to me, “Now, son of man, dig into the wall.” So I dug into the wall and found a hidden doorway.

“Go in,” he said, “and see the wicked and detestable sins they are committing in there!” 10 So I went in and saw the walls covered with engravings of all kinds of crawling animals and detestable creatures. I also saw the various idols[d] worshiped by the people of Israel. 11 Seventy leaders of Israel were standing there with Jaazaniah son of Shaphan in the center. Each of them held an incense burner, from which a cloud of incense rose above their heads.

12 Then the Lord said to me, “Son of man, have you seen what the leaders of Israel are doing with their idols in dark rooms? They are saying, ‘The Lord doesn’t see us; he has deserted our land!’” 13 Then the Lord added, “Come, and I will show you even more detestable sins than these!”

14 He brought me to the north gate of the Lord’s Temple, and some women were sitting there, weeping for the god Tammuz. 15 “Have you seen this?” he asked. “But I will show you even more detestable sins than these!”

16 Then he brought me into the inner courtyard of the Lord’s Temple. At the entrance to the sanctuary, between the entry room and the bronze altar, there were about twenty-five men with their backs to the sanctuary of the Lord. They were facing east, bowing low to the ground, worshiping the sun!

17 “Have you seen this, son of man?” he asked. “Is it nothing to the people of Judah that they commit these detestable sins, leading the whole nation into violence, thumbing their noses at me, and provoking my anger? 18 Therefore, I will respond in fury. I will neither pity nor spare them. And though they cry for mercy, I will not listen.”

The Slaughter of Idolaters

Then the Lord thundered, “Bring on the men appointed to punish the city! Tell them to bring their weapons with them!” Six men soon appeared from the upper gate that faces north, each carrying a deadly weapon in his hand. With them was a man dressed in linen, who carried a writer’s case at his side. They all went into the Temple courtyard and stood beside the bronze altar.

Then the glory of the God of Israel rose up from between the cherubim, where it had rested, and moved to the entrance of the Temple. And the Lord called to the man dressed in linen who was carrying the writer’s case. He said to him, “Walk through the streets of Jerusalem and put a mark on the foreheads of all who weep and sigh because of the detestable sins being committed in their city.”

Then I heard the Lord say to the other men, “Follow him through the city and kill everyone whose forehead is not marked. Show no mercy; have no pity! Kill them all—old and young, girls and women and little children. But do not touch anyone with the mark. Begin right here at the Temple.” So they began by killing the seventy leaders.

“Defile the Temple!” the Lord commanded. “Fill its courtyards with corpses. Go!” So they went and began killing throughout the city.

While they were out killing, I was all alone. I fell face down on the ground and cried out, “O Sovereign Lord! Will your fury against Jerusalem wipe out everyone left in Israel?”

Then he said to me, “The sins of the people of Israel and Judah are very, very great. The entire land is full of murder; the city is filled with injustice. They are saying, ‘The Lord doesn’t see it! The Lord has abandoned the land!’ 10 So I will not spare them or have any pity on them. I will fully repay them for all they have done.”

11 Then the man in linen clothing, who carried the writer’s case, reported back and said, “I have done as you commanded.”

Hebrews 5

Every high priest is a man chosen to represent other people in their dealings with God. He presents their gifts to God and offers sacrifices for their sins. And he is able to deal gently with ignorant and wayward people because he himself is subject to the same weaknesses. That is why he must offer sacrifices for his own sins as well as theirs.

And no one can become a high priest simply because he wants such an honor. He must be called by God for this work, just as Aaron was. That is why Christ did not honor himself by assuming he could become High Priest. No, he was chosen by God, who said to him,

“You are my Son.
Today I have become your Father.[a]

And in another passage God said to him,

“You are a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek.”[b]

While Jesus was here on earth, he offered prayers and pleadings, with a loud cry and tears, to the one who could rescue him from death. And God heard his prayers because of his deep reverence for God. Even though Jesus was God’s Son, he learned obedience from the things he suffered. In this way, God qualified him as a perfect High Priest, and he became the source of eternal salvation for all those who obey him. 10 And God designated him to be a High Priest in the order of Melchizedek.

A Call to Spiritual Growth

11 There is much more we would like to say about this, but it is difficult to explain, especially since you are spiritually dull and don’t seem to listen. 12 You have been believers so long now that you ought to be teaching others. Instead, you need someone to teach you again the basic things about God’s word.[c] You are like babies who need milk and cannot eat solid food. 13 For someone who lives on milk is still an infant and doesn’t know how to do what is right. 14 Solid food is for those who are mature, who through training have the skill to recognize the difference between right and wrong.

Psalm 105:1-15

Psalm 105

Give thanks to the Lord and proclaim his greatness.
Let the whole world know what he has done.
Sing to him; yes, sing his praises.
Tell everyone about his wonderful deeds.
Exult in his holy name;
rejoice, you who worship the Lord.
Search for the Lord and for his strength;
continually seek him.
Remember the wonders he has performed,
his miracles, and the rulings he has given,
you children of his servant Abraham,
you descendants of Jacob, his chosen ones.

He is the Lord our God.
His justice is seen throughout the land.
He always stands by his covenant—
the commitment he made to a thousand generations.
This is the covenant he made with Abraham
and the oath he swore to Isaac.
10 He confirmed it to Jacob as a decree,
and to the people of Israel as a never-ending covenant:
11 “I will give you the land of Canaan
as your special possession.”

12 He said this when they were few in number,
a tiny group of strangers in Canaan.
13 They wandered from nation to nation,
from one kingdom to another.
14 Yet he did not let anyone oppress them.
He warned kings on their behalf:
15 “Do not touch my chosen people,
and do not hurt my prophets.”

Ezekiel 3:16-6:14, Hebrews 4:1-16, Psalms 104:24-35, Proverbs 26:27

Today is November 2nd. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian. It’s great to be here with you as…I guess we’re…I guess we’re…like fully moving into this brand-new month even as we’re kind of winding our way down to the end of another week. And I can’t think of a better place to be right this minute, then right here, right now, with you. And, so, off we go into our reading for today. We began the book of Ezekiel yesterday in the Old Testament and, of course, we will pick up where we left off. We’re reading from the New Living Translation this week. Ezekiel chapter 3 verse 16 through 6 verse 14.

Commentary:

Okay. So, in our reading from Hebrews today we encountered another very well-known passage of Scripture that, like the verse that we read in second Timothy chapter 3, gives us a clear perspective on why we engage with the Scriptures every single day. And, so, the Scripture from Hebrews is, and you’ll probably be able to quote this, it’s very famous, for the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires. And, of course, this is a memorable and very quotable verse but have you ever like…like just stopped for a second and considered an instrument that is that precise, something that can penetrate to where soul and spirit meet. I mean, where exactly even is that? So, if the soul is our moral and emotional nature and the Spirit is our essence or the animating life force that’s given to us by God that makes us alive then we’re speaking of very deep things. Indeed. This would be the place that contains our consciousness and our instincts and love and our emotions and our convictions. It’s where choices are made. And then our bodies are engaged to carry out those decisions. So, I mean, we might otherwise consider this to be our truest identity. And according Hebrews, this is how deeply the word of God can penetrate. It cuts through all the constructs of our personality, right? All of our coping mechanisms. All of our personal hopes and even all of our wounds, all of the things that have wounded and shaped us in our lives. It goes deeper than all of that and speaks directly to the truest spiritual self. So, you know, what else can do that? And, so, this is why day by day, every single day without fail we’re showing up here. And, so, lesser-known, not as popular, but the verse that immediately follows this popular passage about the word of God being sharper than any two-edged sword, we’re told nothing in all creation is hidden from God. Everything is naked and exposed before His eyes and He is the one to whom we are accountable. So, with that in mind, we can see the irreplaceable value of the Scriptures, right? They don’t expose our thoughts and desires to God. He already knows. He’s already aware of what’s going on inside of us. Instead, the Scriptures reveal what is hidden, even what we’ve hidden from ourselves and they speak the truth to and even about who we really are at the deepest, truest level. And, so, let’s be thankful that God would offer us such a gift and that that He would furnish us with the perspective of thousands of years of his involvement because we’re each a part of this ongoing work of God, this work of redemption and when we allow the Scriptures to speak to us where soul and Spirit meet, truth is being poured into our core identity and this is why the rhythm of the Scriptures in our lives is so vital. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires to the truth.

Prayer:

Father, we thank you for this. What can we say? There is there is nothing else like it. And as we’ve experienced for all of these months leading us until today, the Scriptures in our lives every day, we can see this. It’s continually pressing in, poking and prodding and directing and reconstructing, it’s continually inviting us to orient our hearts to you. It’s continually reminding us that we are not alone. It is continually forcing us to raise our heads to the horizon and see that there’s a bigger picture instead of whatever it is that the drama or chaos of our lives might bring us today. There’s more going on. And, so, we thank you for your word and we ask, Holy Spirit, that You plant it into our lives today, transforming us as you promise to do. We pray this in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Ezekiel 1:1-3:15, Hebrews 3:1-19, Psalms 104:1-23, Proverbs 26:2n.24-26s

Today is the 1st day of November. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian. It’s great to be here with you today as we walk into this new month together. Month eleven of the year. And if you can believe it, by the time we get out of this month, we will be fully immersed in the Christmas season, which is pretty hard to believe, but this is where we are in our year and this is how far we’ve come in the Bible. So, we have been reading from the book of Lamentations in our Old Testament reading and we concluded that yesterday, which brings us to a new book of prophecy known as Ezekiel. And this prophet, Ezekiel, appears to have been a well-educated person who was deeply loyal to God and also to the traditions of his people. He came from a priestly family and, like Jeremiah, he was often instructed by God to symbolically act out his prophecies. Jeremiah and Ezekiel were prophesying around the same time. But it’s fairly interesting because, whereas Jeremiah prophesied from Jerusalem, Ezekiel was prophesying at around the same time from exile in Babylon. So, two prophets kind of at either end of the equation. So, during this time, the climate of international struggle and upheaval was prevalent. The Assyrian empire had been conquered by the Babylonian empire. Egypt and Babylon clashed within the land of ancient Israel because possessing that land, that little strip of land, allowed whoever ruled that strip of land to control the major trade routes between lands to the north and east and the continent of Africa. And because of this, at one point or another, the Israelites had all been allies of and then subsequently subdued by all of these ancient empires. But Jerusalem had not been destroyed. Rather, Judah would pay tribute and become like a vassal that changed hands. And this all happened during the generational decline in the kings’ leadership that we totally read about as we were moving through the books of Kings and Chronicles. And then in 597 BC, the Babylonians subdued Jerusalem and began to deport people and take them into exile. And Ezekiel was among the first to go into exile. And several years later, and we read of this when we were reading the book of Jeremiah, this king that had been put in place named Zedekiah rebelled against Babylon, even though Jeremiah was clearly pleading and prophesying not to do that. And then in 588, the Babylonians, they came and they laid siege. And they eventually conquered, and they completely destroyed Jerusalem a few years later. So, Ezekiel had been taken into exile and in those early years, he prophesied of Jerusalem’s destruction, even as Jeremiah was prophesying the same thing from Jerusalem if they didn’t surrender. And as we know, they didn’t. And after the fall of Jerusalem and the temple was completely destroyed, then the prophesies of Ezekiel from exile transform into some of the most hope-filled messages of renewal and restoration that we’ll find in the whole Bible. But Ezekiel also contains these descriptions that are almost, like, cinematic, apocalyptic visions that aren’t unlike the visions of Daniel or the visions found in the book of Revelation. And because of that, the parallels are often cross-examined in the apocalyptic study of the end times known as eschatology. But these weren’t just disembodied visions that Ezekiel had in some kind of weird dream. They had a pretty great impact on him personally. And the same can happen for us as we read them. If we’re able to approach the book and the imagery from the perspective of what it speaks to our hearts, we’ll be able to engage and enjoy the deep and rich textures allowing to speak to us like a sunrise would rather than how the morning newspaper does. The book of Ezekiel holds a lot of promise for us and it’s one of the larger and influential books of prophecy we have in the Bible. And even though we’re reading a book that’s thousands of years old, it tells of an ultimate hope and a blessing that God has for us when we return to him. And so with that, we’re reading from the New Living Translation this week. Ezekiel 1:1-3:15.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word. We thank You for this new threshold that we’ve walked into into the book of Ezekiel and we invite Your Holy Spirit to speak to us. Everything that we need to hear, everything that we need to feel. We open our hearts to You. And we also make notice of the fact that we have entered into the eleventh month of this year. And once again we take a moment at this line of demarcation to look back and rejoice in Your faithfulness. You have certainly brought us this far, and we have certainly walked through plenty of drama. And yet here we are, and You have been faithful. And, so, we take note of this, we acknowledge this and along with the psalmist we declare, let all that we are praise the Lord. O Lord our God, how great You are. You are robed with honor and majesty. You are dressed in a robe of light. You stretch out the starry curtain of the heavens. Father, that You are Almighty God and father to us at the same time is overwhelming. And when it sinks in, when we get this glimpse of the reality, we wonder why we would worry and fret about anything. The Lord of heaven’s armies, the creator of all things both seen and unseen, is our father. And, so, we rejoice in You and we worship You, Father. Come, Holy Spirit, we pray. Lead us firmly and rightly and clearly into this next month. We submit ourselves to You. We open ourselves to You completely. Come Holy Spirit, we pray. In Jesus name. Amen.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Friday November 2, 2018 (NIV)

Ezekiel 3:16-6:14

A Watchman for Israel

16 After seven days the Lord gave me a message. He said, 17 “Son of man, I have appointed you as a watchman for Israel. Whenever you receive a message from me, warn people immediately. 18 If I warn the wicked, saying, ‘You are under the penalty of death,’ but you fail to deliver the warning, they will die in their sins. And I will hold you responsible for their deaths. 19 If you warn them and they refuse to repent and keep on sinning, they will die in their sins. But you will have saved yourself because you obeyed me.

20 “If righteous people turn away from their righteous behavior and ignore the obstacles I put in their way, they will die. And if you do not warn them, they will die in their sins. None of their righteous acts will be remembered, and I will hold you responsible for their deaths. 21 But if you warn righteous people not to sin and they listen to you and do not sin, they will live, and you will have saved yourself, too.”

22 Then the Lord took hold of me and said, “Get up and go out into the valley, and I will speak to you there.” 23 So I got up and went, and there I saw the glory of the Lord, just as I had seen in my first vision by the Kebar River. And I fell face down on the ground.

24 Then the Spirit came into me and set me on my feet. He spoke to me and said, “Go to your house and shut yourself in. 25 There, son of man, you will be tied with ropes so you cannot go out among the people. 26 And I will make your tongue stick to the roof of your mouth so that you will be speechless and unable to rebuke them, for they are rebels. 27 But when I give you a message, I will loosen your tongue and let you speak. Then you will say to them, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says!’ Those who choose to listen will listen, but those who refuse will refuse, for they are rebels.

A Sign of the Coming Siege

“And now, son of man, take a large clay brick and set it down in front of you. Then draw a map of the city of Jerusalem on it. Show the city under siege. Build a wall around it so no one can escape. Set up the enemy camp, and surround the city with siege ramps and battering rams. Then take an iron griddle and place it between you and the city. Turn toward the city and demonstrate how harsh the siege will be against Jerusalem. This will be a warning to the people of Israel.

“Now lie on your left side and place the sins of Israel on yourself. You are to bear their sins for the number of days you lie there on your side. I am requiring you to bear Israel’s sins for 390 days—one day for each year of their sin. After that, turn over and lie on your right side for 40 days—one day for each year of Judah’s sin.

“Meanwhile, keep staring at the siege of Jerusalem. Lie there with your arm bared and prophesy her destruction. I will tie you up with ropes so you won’t be able to turn from side to side until the days of your siege have been completed.

“Now go and get some wheat, barley, beans, lentils, millet, and emmer wheat, and mix them together in a storage jar. Use them to make bread for yourself during the 390 days you will be lying on your side. 10 Ration this out to yourself, eight ounces[a] of food for each day, and eat it at set times. 11 Then measure out a jar[b] of water for each day, and drink it at set times. 12 Prepare and eat this food as you would barley cakes. While all the people are watching, bake it over a fire using dried human dung as fuel and then eat the bread.” 13 Then the Lord said, “This is how Israel will eat defiled bread in the Gentile lands to which I will banish them!”

14 Then I said, “O Sovereign Lord, must I be defiled by using human dung? For I have never been defiled before. From the time I was a child until now I have never eaten any animal that died of sickness or was killed by other animals. I have never eaten any meat forbidden by the law.”

15 “All right,” the Lord said. “You may bake your bread with cow dung instead of human dung.” 16 Then he told me, “Son of man, I will make food very scarce in Jerusalem. It will be weighed out with great care and eaten fearfully. The water will be rationed out drop by drop, and the people will drink it with dismay. 17 Lacking food and water, people will look at one another in terror, and they will waste away under their punishment.

A Sign of the Coming Judgment

“Son of man, take a sharp sword and use it as a razor to shave your head and beard. Use a scale to weigh the hair into three equal parts. Place a third of it at the center of your map of Jerusalem. After acting out the siege, burn it there. Scatter another third across your map and chop it with a sword. Scatter the last third to the wind, for I will scatter my people with the sword. Keep just a bit of the hair and tie it up in your robe. Then take some of these hairs out and throw them into the fire, burning them up. A fire will then spread from this remnant and destroy all of Israel.

“This is what the Sovereign Lord says: This is an illustration of what will happen to Jerusalem. I placed her at the center of the nations, but she has rebelled against my regulations and decrees and has been even more wicked than the surrounding nations. She has refused to obey the regulations and decrees I gave her to follow.

“Therefore, this is what the Sovereign Lord says: You people have behaved worse than your neighbors and have refused to obey my decrees and regulations. You have not even lived up to the standards of the nations around you. Therefore, I myself, the Sovereign Lord, am now your enemy. I will punish you publicly while all the nations watch. Because of your detestable idols, I will punish you like I have never punished anyone before or ever will again. 10 Parents will eat their own children, and children will eat their parents. I will punish you and scatter to the winds the few who survive.

11 “As surely as I live, says the Sovereign Lord, I will cut you off completely. I will show you no pity at all because you have defiled my Temple with your vile images and detestable sins. 12 A third of your people will die in the city from disease and famine. A third of them will be slaughtered by the enemy outside the city walls. And I will scatter a third to the winds, chasing them with my sword. 13 Then at last my anger will be spent, and I will be satisfied. And when my fury against them has subsided, all Israel will know that I, the Lord, have spoken to them in my jealous anger.

14 “So I will turn you into a ruin, a mockery in the eyes of the surrounding nations and to all who pass by. 15 You will become an object of mockery and taunting and horror. You will be a warning to all the nations around you. They will see what happens when the Lord punishes a nation in anger and rebukes it, says the Lord.

16 “I will shower you with the deadly arrows of famine to destroy you. The famine will become more and more severe until every crumb of food is gone. 17 And along with the famine, wild animals will attack you and rob you of your children. Disease and war will stalk your land, and I will bring the sword of the enemy against you. I, the Lord, have spoken!”

Judgment against Israel’s Mountains

Again a message came to me from the Lord: “Son of man, turn and face the mountains of Israel and prophesy against them. Proclaim this message from the Sovereign Lord against the mountains of Israel. This is what the Sovereign Lord says to the mountains and hills and to the ravines and valleys: I am about to bring war upon you, and I will smash your pagan shrines. All your altars will be demolished, and your places of worship will be destroyed. I will kill your people in front of your idols.[c] I will lay your corpses in front of your idols and scatter your bones around your altars. Wherever you live there will be desolation, and I will destroy your pagan shrines. Your altars will be demolished, your idols will be smashed, your places of worship will be torn down, and all the religious objects you have made will be destroyed. The place will be littered with corpses, and you will know that I alone am the Lord.

“But I will let a few of my people escape destruction, and they will be scattered among the nations of the world. Then when they are exiled among the nations, they will remember me. They will recognize how hurt I am by their unfaithful hearts and lustful eyes that long for their idols. Then at last they will hate themselves for all their detestable sins. 10 They will know that I alone am the Lord and that I was serious when I said I would bring this calamity on them.

11 “This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Clap your hands in horror, and stamp your feet. Cry out because of all the detestable sins the people of Israel have committed. Now they are going to die from war and famine and disease. 12 Disease will strike down those who are far away in exile. War will destroy those who are nearby. And anyone who survives will be killed by famine. So at last I will spend my fury on them. 13 They will know that I am the Lord when their dead lie scattered among their idols and altars on every hill and mountain and under every green tree and every great shade tree—the places where they offered sacrifices to their idols. 14 I will crush them and make their cities desolate from the wilderness in the south to Riblah[d] in the north. Then they will know that I am the Lord.”

Promised Rest for God’s People

God’s promise of entering his rest still stands, so we ought to tremble with fear that some of you might fail to experience it. For this good news—that God has prepared this rest—has been announced to us just as it was to them. But it did them no good because they didn’t share the faith of those who listened to God.[a] For only we who believe can enter his rest. As for the others, God said,

“In my anger I took an oath:
‘They will never enter my place of rest,’”[b]

even though this rest has been ready since he made the world. We know it is ready because of the place in the Scriptures where it mentions the seventh day: “On the seventh day God rested from all his work.”[c] But in the other passage God said, “They will never enter my place of rest.”[d]

So God’s rest is there for people to enter, but those who first heard this good news failed to enter because they disobeyed God. So God set another time for entering his rest, and that time is today. God announced this through David much later in the words already quoted:

“Today when you hear his voice,
don’t harden your hearts.”[e]

Now if Joshua had succeeded in giving them this rest, God would not have spoken about another day of rest still to come. So there is a special rest[f] still waiting for the people of God. 10 For all who have entered into God’s rest have rested from their labors, just as God did after creating the world. 11 So let us do our best to enter that rest. But if we disobey God, as the people of Israel did, we will fall.

12 For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires. 13 Nothing in all creation is hidden from God. Everything is naked and exposed before his eyes, and he is the one to whom we are accountable.

Christ Is Our High Priest

14 So then, since we have a great High Priest who has entered heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to what we believe. 15 This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin. 16 So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.

Psalm 104:24-35

24 O Lord, what a variety of things you have made!
In wisdom you have made them all.
The earth is full of your creatures.
25 Here is the ocean, vast and wide,
teeming with life of every kind,
both large and small.
26 See the ships sailing along,
and Leviathan,[a] which you made to play in the sea.

27 They all depend on you
to give them food as they need it.
28 When you supply it, they gather it.
You open your hand to feed them,
and they are richly satisfied.
29 But if you turn away from them, they panic.
When you take away their breath,
they die and turn again to dust.
30 When you give them your breath,[b] life is created,
and you renew the face of the earth.

31 May the glory of the Lord continue forever!
The Lord takes pleasure in all he has made!
32 The earth trembles at his glance;
the mountains smoke at his touch.

33 I will sing to the Lord as long as I live.
I will praise my God to my last breath!
34 May all my thoughts be pleasing to him,
for I rejoice in the Lord.
35 Let all sinners vanish from the face of the earth;
let the wicked disappear forever.

Let all that I am praise the Lord.

Praise the Lord!

Hebrews 3

Jesus Is Greater Than Moses

And so, dear brothers and sisters who belong to God and[a] are partners with those called to heaven, think carefully about this Jesus whom we declare to be God’s messenger[b] and High Priest. For he was faithful to God, who appointed him, just as Moses served faithfully when he was entrusted with God’s entire[c] house.

But Jesus deserves far more glory than Moses, just as a person who builds a house deserves more praise than the house itself. For every house has a builder, but the one who built everything is God.

Moses was certainly faithful in God’s house as a servant. His work was an illustration of the truths God would reveal later. But Christ, as the Son, is in charge of God’s entire house. And we are God’s house, if we keep our courage and remain confident in our hope in Christ.[d]

That is why the Holy Spirit says,

“Today when you hear his voice,
don’t harden your hearts
as Israel did when they rebelled,
when they tested me in the wilderness.
There your ancestors tested and tried my patience,
even though they saw my miracles for forty years.
10 So I was angry with them, and I said,
‘Their hearts always turn away from me.
They refuse to do what I tell them.’
11 So in my anger I took an oath:
‘They will never enter my place of rest.’”[e]

12 Be careful then, dear brothers and sisters.[f] Make sure that your own hearts are not evil and unbelieving, turning you away from the living God. 13 You must warn each other every day, while it is still “today,” so that none of you will be deceived by sin and hardened against God. 14 For if we are faithful to the end, trusting God just as firmly as when we first believed, we will share in all that belongs to Christ. 15 Remember what it says:

“Today when you hear his voice,
don’t harden your hearts
as Israel did when they rebelled.”[g]

16 And who was it who rebelled against God, even though they heard his voice? Wasn’t it the people Moses led out of Egypt? 17 And who made God angry for forty years? Wasn’t it the people who sinned, whose corpses lay in the wilderness? 18 And to whom was God speaking when he took an oath that they would never enter his rest? Wasn’t it the people who disobeyed him? 19 So we see that because of their unbelief they were not able to enter his rest.

Psalm 104:1-23

Psalm 104

Let all that I am praise the Lord.

O Lord my God, how great you are!
You are robed with honor and majesty.
You are dressed in a robe of light.
You stretch out the starry curtain of the heavens;
you lay out the rafters of your home in the rain clouds.
You make the clouds your chariot;
you ride upon the wings of the wind.
The winds are your messengers;
flames of fire are your servants.[a]

You placed the world on its foundation
so it would never be moved.
You clothed the earth with floods of water,
water that covered even the mountains.
At your command, the water fled;
at the sound of your thunder, it hurried away.
Mountains rose and valleys sank
to the levels you decreed.
Then you set a firm boundary for the seas,
so they would never again cover the earth.

10 You make springs pour water into the ravines,
so streams gush down from the mountains.
11 They provide water for all the animals,
and the wild donkeys quench their thirst.
12 The birds nest beside the streams
and sing among the branches of the trees.
13 You send rain on the mountains from your heavenly home,
and you fill the earth with the fruit of your labor.
14 You cause grass to grow for the livestock
and plants for people to use.
You allow them to produce food from the earth—
15 wine to make them glad,
olive oil to soothe their skin,
and bread to give them strength.
16 The trees of the Lord are well cared for—
the cedars of Lebanon that he planted.
17 There the birds make their nests,
and the storks make their homes in the cypresses.
18 High in the mountains live the wild goats,
and the rocks form a refuge for the hyraxes.[b]

19 You made the moon to mark the seasons,
and the sun knows when to set.
20 You send the darkness, and it becomes night,
when all the forest animals prowl about.
21 Then the young lions roar for their prey,
stalking the food provided by God.
22 At dawn they slink back
into their dens to rest.
23 Then people go off to their work,
where they labor until evening.

Footnotes:

  1. 104:4 Greek version reads He sends his angels like the winds, / his servants like flames of fire. Compare Heb 1:7.

Proverbs 26:24-26

24 People may cover their hatred with pleasant words,
but they’re deceiving you.
25 They pretend to be kind, but don’t believe them.
Their hearts are full of many evils.[a]
26 While their hatred may be concealed by trickery,
their wrongdoing will be exposed in public.
