Joshua 7:16-9:2, Luke 16:1-18, Psalms 82:1-8, Proverbs 13:2-3

Today is the 13th day of April. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian. It is a pleasure and an honor to be here with you as we and another of the ever flowing weeks and coming to you from the More Gathering here at the top of Sharp Top mountain. At this point in the journey, even though it’s been a day really, a day and half, it feels like a week and a half and we’re kind of reaching the halfway point and moving through into the second half of our time together, which will end tomorrow. And yet it’s never anything short of profound. It’s beautiful to watch what God does in such a short amount of time by just offering Him some space, just giving Him some space in our lives. So, thank you for your continued prayers over all that’s happening here. And let’s finish this week well by taking the next step forward in the Scriptures. We’ve been reading from the New International Version this week and today we will continue the journey forward. If we remember yesterday, Jericho the first conquest, the city of conquest was taken but then the second battle for a small village named Ai was met with defeat. And, so, everyone’s trying to sort out what’s going on. Joshua chapter 7 verse 16 through 9:2 today.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for another week. As we conclude today, we conclude another of our weeks together in the Scriptures. We thank You for bringing us this far. We thank You for all that You’ve done in our lives thus far in this year alone and we look with great anticipation for all that You have yet to do as Your word washes into our lives each and every day. So, as we release this week and allow it to become a part of our history and look forward to the coming week we invite Your Holy Spirit’s here on to this mountaintop where the More Gathering is taking place. Holy Spirit we thank You for all that You are doing and what You will continue to do in this time. And as we move into the new week and all of us prepare to make our ways back to our homes we ask for Your mercy over the travel, over the stamina, over health, and over all that You are planting in our lives. But we don’t want to get too far ahead of ourselves. That’s not until tomorrow. So, we want to be here, now and invite You fully. Come Holy Spirit into this day, no matter where we may be on this planet we ask in Jesus’ name. Amen.

I’ve been mentioning that the More Gathering is happening around here. So, thank you for your continued prayers over this time. There is an awful lot of moving parts that go into an event like this. So, thank you for your prayers.

If you want to partner with the Daily Audio Bible in the mission that we share together to bring the spoken word of God read fresh every day to anyone who will listen to it anywhere on this planet any time of day or night. And we achieve that every day. Someone’s always listening to the Daily Audio Bible, you can pretty much never listen…I don’t think you can ever listen to the Daily Audio Bible alone no what time of day or night it is. That’s our mission. And our mission is to build community around that rhythm so that it becomes a part of our lives as we move forward, and year-by-year are transformed completely. And I can look back over the years that I’ve been involved here and say I am nowhere near the same person I was and you may have been here a year, two years, five years, eight years, whatever and you can say the same thing and this may be your first year. This is your first, April 13th being here but you can look back toward the beginning of the year and see. Somehow the Bible, it speaks to the deepest places inside of us. That’s our mission to continue to offer it and build community around it. And if that brings life to you then thank you for your partnership. There’s a link on the homepage at dailyaudiobible.com. Community Prayer and Praise:

This call is for Victoria Grace out of Houston first-time caller and pretty new listener. This is Candace from Oregon. Thank you so much for calling. I was just really hurt along with you that you did not get to meet your biological father and that you had made a plan to meet him this summer with your brother but then a couple days later he passed away. That’s just really painful and I’m so sorry…I’m so sorry. May God heal your heart and bring you unexpected comfort. You are innocent, and the enemy really, really tries to use these kinds of things to bring guilt and shame, but you are…you are completely innocent so keep your eyes on the Lord Jesus. Thank goodness it’s the time of year when we celebrate His life and death and resurrection on our behalf. He’s got you covered my beautiful sister and just know that we’re praying for you and please call in again sometime. May the Lord bless you and keep you. May the Lord make his face shine upon you and give you peace.

Hi, everyone my name is Maria. I’ve been listening to the Daily Audio Bible now since January when a friend introduced me to it and I just want to say that this has been such an incredible part of my day to start out each morning. It’s so encouraging and also humbling just listening to everybody’s stories and prayer requests and just getting to hear the word each morning. So, thank you Brian and Jill and everybody else on the team who makes this possible. I just wanted to say that, and I was just encouraged to call in because I feel like I often don’t ask for things when I need it and I could just use some prayer right now for __ His guidance and an opportunity to work closer to home to be closer to my husband and my daughter who is now eight months old. I really just would love to be able to see them more and not have to commute so far. It would be amazing to one day become a stay at home mom and God willing if that happens it would be such a blessing but I could just use a prayer for that right now if you guys think of it and I appreciate your time. Thank you everybody. I want you all to know that when you call in those prayers are all being answered in God’s timing and I’m praying for all of you. Thank you. Have a blessed day. Bye.

Hello, my name is Lee Crawford I’m calling from outside Detroit. I’m calling regards to Cassidy the infant that’s in Madison right now with a diagnosis with retinoblastoma. I’m praying for her. My mother had retinoblastoma and she did lose an eye, but God has given her a beautiful life and I’m sure that everything will be fine with Cassidy with the prayers that are coming in for her. And I just wanted you to know that I’m praying for her, so is my mother, and my sister. And have a blessed day.

Hi DAB family my name is Miranda. My father’s name is Joel. He’s been suffering with a very serious illness for over a decade. He’s now suffering from kidney failure and he needs a miracle very, very soon. If you can please pray for him and his family I would really appreciate it and __. Thank you.

Joshua 5:1-7:15, Luke 15:1-32, Psalms 81:1-16, Proverbs 13:1

Today is the 12th day of April. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian. It’s great to be here with you today as we just come in. Wherever we are, whatever’s going on, no matter what the challenges may be or the victories, we just come together as one family allowing God’s word to speak over us as we move through our next today. And, so, the next bit of territory that we’re heading into is further into the book of Joshua. We have crossed the Jordan River, this mythic moment that we’ve been working our way towards so long. And, so, now we’re on the other side of the Jordan River and we’re in the promised land, but it isn’t settled, it isn’t taken, we’ve just arrived and that’s where we’ll pick up with the story. Joshua chapter 5 verse 1 through 7:15 today and we’ll reading from the New International Version this week.

Commentary:

Okay. So, we are in the promised land and we have witnessed the first conquest of the city of Jericho and its just been mere weeks since we were standing at the ruins of Jericho. The large walled city that it may have once been is only fragmentary ruins there, but still some ruins, some of the oldest ruins of any kind of city dwelling in the world are found in the ruins of Jericho. So, Jericho was conquered and then they go to small city nearby called Ai. Ans some of the ruins of that city still exist. It’s being excavated, at least it was the last time I was there. We filmed there once. It was just kind of getting going. And they found defeat, which threw them into panic because what they were worried about is that the rest of the people would find out, certainly the reputation of the destruction of Jericho. But then to turn around and find out that they could be defeated by Ai, a small kind of village, little town, would cause everyone to band together and come against them and wipe them out. And this is…and when God spoke, “you didn’t obey what I told you to do.” And, so, there’s been things taken that were supposed to be destroyed. And it’s interesting because, probably most of us have a sense of where this story is going with this man Achan who has taken property and hidden it. But let’s look at what’s going on here because they didn’t just decide to go find Achan, drag him out and do away with him. What was commanded was that the people consecrate themselves and prepare to come before the Lord the next day and the person found with the items that were devoted to destruction then that person would be destroyed. So, what if Achan had just gotten rid of what he had taken, what he had done to break covenant on behalf of his people before God. We don’t know because he didn’t do that, and we’ll continue with that story tomorrow.

But let’s go over to Psalms for a second because…because the Psalm today brings up some important questions to consider like, does God have feelings? Right? Does the way that we live our lives affect God? Is He ever exasperated? Does He ever feel sadness? These are fascinating things to think about but when we go back to the story of Achan we could say He must have some feelings about what He’s saying because he’s exasperated that at the very first battle some have broken faith with Him. So, how would it change the choices you’re going to make today if you thought or knew that they were going to affect God. I know that might be like a mind bend. You might think, “well God is above it all and there’s nothing that I can do that could affect him in any way”. But that’s not how the Psalm reads. So, what we read from Psalms today is, “no my people wouldn’t listen, Israel didn’t want me around. So, I let them follow their own stubborn desires living according to their own ideas. Oh, that my people would listen to me.” So, this is the voice of God speaking from Psalms, and He doesn’t sound aloof or separate or disinterested because He’s not. He’s not indifferent to us and He’s never been without emotion towards people and we’ve come far enough in the Bible to see that that’s clear and as we continue this journey through the Bible we will…there’s no way we will get to the end of the Bible and not understand that God is deeply invested, hugely emotionally invested into us. God wants to know us. God wants to be known by us. We would otherwise call that a relationship. And any of us who are in a relationship or who have ever been in a relationship pretty much of any kind, doesn’t have to be a romantic or sexual relationship, a relationship that’s real, indifference doesn’t work in relationships, but isn’t it interesting how often we blame God for indifference to us all. All the while being indifferent to His heart because he’s not doing what we want Him to do. So, our reading from Psalms gives us a glimpse into what it feels like for God when we do this. So, let’s take these stories that we found in the Scripture today and consider that our actions will matter in our lives and in our relationship with God today. Not because God might punish us if we’re bad boys and girls but because he’s trusted us with His heart. That’s what happens when you fall in love with somebody, that’s what happens when you are in a relationship. So, if we’ll consider this as we move through the day with God we may begin to sense just how powerful His resolve to care for us and be with us is.

Prayer:

Father, as we do most every day, we invite You into what we’ve read, because we can use our minds to interpret and consider the words but it’s Your Holy Spirit who will plant it in our lives and make it mean something that changes the way we’re going to live today. And once again understanding that You have invited us into a relationship should strike us utterly speechless. What, else can be said when the eternal God has invited a human being into a personal relationship other than under speechless awe. But most of the time we just take it for granted because it’s just always been how it’s been. And, so, we had the audacity to say, “well, if we’re gonna be in a relationship then You better show up for me in whatever said set of circumstances I might weave myself into”. And all of these circumstances that we create for ourselves and all the chaos that we make and all of the drama that we’re manufacturing by the bucket load every day, that never had to exist, we never had to birth it into the world, it never needed to be on this planet, we could’ve walked with You. We could’ve just gone through our days with You. It’s our unrest, it’s our dissatisfaction. And, so, we try to get our identity from each other and we cause and manufacture these dramas that are nothing more than distractions. And then when we are distracted and run ourselves into a brick wall, we throw our hands up in the sky and say, “where were You when I needed You?” Forgive us, God. We are so ridiculous sometimes. We are like sheep who have gone astray. And yet even in the gospel of Luke we see Jesus telling the story of leaving the 99 to find 1. And You have come after us so many times we can’t even count. Forgive us. We are sorry for the emotional toll that our lives have had on You. And those of us who have estranged children or prodigal’s who are going through that kind of season we understand what this feels like and obviously so do You because You told the story in the gospel of Luke. But usually we focus our attention on what it is we are going through not understanding that we have put You through this so many times and You have never given up on us and You will never give up on anyone who is estranged from You including our prodigal’s. So, help us God to get our eyes back on our own lives and own our relationship with You and walk in our relationship with You and stop perpetuating darkness that does not need to be on this planet. We are here to bring light. We will never do this when we are estranged from You in any way. Come Holy Spirit, fill us from bottom to top with Your presence today we ask in the mighty and all-powerful name of Jesus we pray. Amen.

Song:

Everything and Nothing - Matt Maher

Come let us return to where we were

Back to knowing life and saving words

Back to where we heard redemption speak

Where You brought us to our knees

Come let us return to Eden’s heart

Long before the fall, back to the start

Back before we covered up our sin

And took a second skin

Once upon a time

I’m lost and found

I’m saved and drowned

I’m everything and nothing all at once

I’m so far gone

But I’m already home

With everything and nothing but Your love

Come let us discover something new

Cause we’re all pilgrims on a journey to the truth

We’re all wanderers relying on a man

To help us understand

Cause everybody wants to see the proof

We’re always tripping on our pride to get to You

So blessed are the ones who haven’t seen

But still believe

Once upon a time

I’m lost and found

I’m saved and drowned

I’m everything and nothing all at once

I’m so far gone

But I’m already home

With everything and nothing but Your love

My heart is tin but love is real

I’m unconvinced by what I feel

No yellow bricks to pave this road

Oh, straight and narrow lead me home

Lead me home

I’m lost and found

I’m saved and drowned

I’m everything and nothing all at once

Oh, I’m so far gone

But I’m already home

With everything and nothing but Your love

Everything and nothing

Everything and nothing

Everything and nothing but Your love

Nothing but Your love

Nothing but Your love

Today begins the More Gathering for women. And, so, we have been here on Sharp Top mountain preparing for that since last evening and all of the buses and flights and cars will be arriving today for the beginning of the More Gathering. And, so, yet again, I just call out to the community here. Pray, ask God to put a bubble over the top of this mountain, where his Holy Spirit is just hovering. That is our prayer and we thank you for standing together with us as we move into the a More Gathering for women. It has been planned out for so long, it’s finally here. So, thank you for your prayers.

And that is it for today. I’m Brian I love you and I’ll be waiting for you here tomorrow.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hello Daily Audio Bible family, this is Emmanuelle. First-time caller. I am a listener. I am actually asking for all prayers __. Seeking a lot of love from God to speak into my heart. At this point it’s been a few months and a prayer request is to restore and help and heal my marriage with Karina. It’s been a really tough ride. We’ve been married 10 years, three beautiful children. It’s just come down to a very tough moment and she’s asking for divorce. I know I haven’t been the perfect husband, the perfect man, but I am trying to make some changes in my life to better myself. It’s not enough at the moment. I have given time and space for her as she’s requesting but I’m doing really things of love that God’s just asking me to not give up on my marriage. I just really need…really hi prayer. Brian, thank you for so much for sharing the word every day with us and family a if there’s anything I could ask it’s to please pray for us in this tough season. God bless you all.

Hi DAB family this is Tony the Painter. I just heard Victoria Grace’s prayer request and it kind of…it kind of hit me hard because I’ve got a son and a daughter who were adopted, basically I get told by a judge that I lacked the empathy to raise two small children, which I’m sure is legalese for you’re a man and we don’t trust you. But I’ve never once stopped loving my daughter and my son, but you just really reminded me to get on my knees and to pray for my daughter. And, so, Victoria grace every single time this week that I pray for my daughter I’m also going to say a prayer for you as well and for your brother. Just…yeah…it’s really hard because that’s one of my fears…is that I won’t to be there when my children come to find me. So, yeah, I’m praying for you. God bless you guys. God bless all of you. Thank you. Love you.

Good morning Daily Audio Bible and this is Heartbroken in Tennessee. I just was listening to the community prayer for the weekend of April 6th and I wanted…I didn’t get all the way through the complete prayer requests but I did hear one that touched me because I just went through the same issue and I think it was from Victoria out of Houston and she talked about not seeing her father or having met her father, her birth father of over 23 years and as she proceeded to try to find him and locate him he had passed prior to her seeing him and I just want to comfort you right now with that because I do not that feels. I went through something very similar. My dad, I’ve known him…at 15 was my last time seeing him and unfortunately, I did search for my father through the years and unfortunately through stubbornness and anger and resentment I didn’t do it fast enough. So, when I did finally do it I learned that he had passed away and I was so heartbroken because I wanted that opportunity to see my father. I did find his burial site. I did go and visit him and make peace with that and I believe that God had it that way because I think he didn’t want me to see my father in the condition that he passed away in. He had Alzheimer’s. He was 80 years old and perhaps that would’ve broken my heart even more, that he wouldn’t have even known who I was. So, sometimes God has things happen for a reason and I do that believe in that and Victoria I just want to send you my love and my comfort and just know that I know how you feel and know that God had a purpose for how things happened and why and hopefully you’ll have some conclusion with that with some peace and know that God did everything for a reason and at the…

Hi this is Toni from Germany and I’m calling for a couple reasons. One, Denise, I heard your beautiful, beautiful prayer request to help you proceed with what you feel the Lord has asked of you in regards to your relationship. And it’s a very, very touching and beautiful even testimony and prayer request and I’m sure they’ll be a lot of people calling in and I’m praying. I also want to shout out to see if Victoria…Elina from Victoria is still on and I’m remembering you in prayer. And I would like also to ask for prayers for the people that are providing for my parents in their nursing home and also for my parents. Hi mom and dad. Then, the other thing is…the main reason I called is I had a thought. Think about how many times we are meeting people wherever we are whether it be when we’re traveling or we’re calling someone for customer service…assistance…when we’re going to a store. And what does everyone always ask? “How are you doing?” How do we know if those people are not actually DABbers? And I have a suggestion. How about replying with…this year anyways…”I am Maintaining.” This is an indication that we are a DABber. And, so, it’s just a thought, you know. So, when people start asking me, “how are you doing” and if I’ve never met them before I’m gonna say, “I am maintaining” and I’m hoping that others will pick up on that for this year and that we will connect with our DABbers. Joshua 7:16-9:2

16 Early the next morning Joshua had Israel come forward by tribes, and Judah was chosen. 17 The clans of Judah came forward, and the Zerahites were chosen.(A) He had the clan of the Zerahites come forward by families, and Zimri was chosen. 18 Joshua had his family come forward man by man, and Achan son of Karmi, the son of Zimri, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah,(B) was chosen.(C)

19 Then Joshua said to Achan, “My son, give glory(D) to the Lord, the God of Israel, and honor him. Tell(E) me what you have done; do not hide it from me.”

20 Achan replied, “It is true! I have sinned against the Lord, the God of Israel. This is what I have done: 21 When I saw in the plunder(F) a beautiful robe from Babylonia,[a] two hundred shekels[b] of silver and a bar of gold weighing fifty shekels,[c] I coveted(G) them and took them. They are hidden in the ground inside my tent, with the silver underneath.”

22 So Joshua sent messengers, and they ran to the tent, and there it was, hidden in his tent, with the silver underneath. 23 They took the things from the tent, brought them to Joshua and all the Israelites and spread them out before the Lord.

24 Then Joshua, together with all Israel, took Achan son of Zerah, the silver, the robe, the gold bar, his sons(H) and daughters, his cattle, donkeys and sheep, his tent and all that he had, to the Valley of Achor.(I) 25 Joshua said, “Why have you brought this trouble(J) on us? The Lord will bring trouble on you today.”

Then all Israel stoned him,(K) and after they had stoned the rest, they burned them.(L) 26 Over Achan they heaped(M) up a large pile of rocks, which remains to this day.(N) Then the Lord turned from his fierce anger.(O) Therefore that place has been called the Valley of Achor[d](P) ever since.

Ai Destroyed

Then the Lord said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid;(Q) do not be discouraged.(R) Take the whole army(S) with you, and go up and attack Ai.(T) For I have delivered(U) into your hands the king of Ai, his people, his city and his land. You shall do to Ai and its king as you did to Jericho and its king, except that you may carry off their plunder(V) and livestock for yourselves.(W) Set an ambush(X) behind the city.”

So Joshua and the whole army moved out to attack Ai. He chose thirty thousand of his best fighting men and sent them out at night with these orders: “Listen carefully. You are to set an ambush behind the city. Don’t go very far from it. All of you be on the alert. I and all those with me will advance on the city, and when the men come out against us, as they did before, we will flee from them. They will pursue us until we have lured them away from the city, for they will say, ‘They are running away from us as they did before.’ So when we flee from them, you are to rise up from ambush and take the city. The Lord your God will give it into your hand.(Y) When you have taken the city, set it on fire.(Z) Do what the Lord has commanded.(AA) See to it; you have my orders.”

Then Joshua sent them off, and they went to the place of ambush(AB) and lay in wait between Bethel and Ai, to the west of Ai—but Joshua spent that night with the people.

10 Early the next morning(AC) Joshua mustered his army, and he and the leaders of Israel(AD) marched before them to Ai. 11 The entire force that was with him marched up and approached the city and arrived in front of it. They set up camp north of Ai, with the valley between them and the city. 12 Joshua had taken about five thousand men and set them in ambush between Bethel and Ai, to the west of the city. 13 So the soldiers took up their positions—with the main camp to the north of the city and the ambush to the west of it. That night Joshua went into the valley.

14 When the king of Ai saw this, he and all the men of the city hurried out early in the morning to meet Israel in battle at a certain place overlooking the Arabah.(AE) But he did not know(AF) that an ambush had been set against him behind the city. 15 Joshua and all Israel let themselves be driven back(AG) before them, and they fled toward the wilderness.(AH) 16 All the men of Ai were called to pursue them, and they pursued Joshua and were lured away(AI) from the city. 17 Not a man remained in Ai or Bethel who did not go after Israel. They left the city open and went in pursuit of Israel.

18 Then the Lord said to Joshua, “Hold out toward Ai the javelin(AJ) that is in your hand,(AK) for into your hand I will deliver the city.” So Joshua held out toward the city the javelin that was in his hand.(AL) 19 As soon as he did this, the men in the ambush rose quickly(AM) from their position and rushed forward. They entered the city and captured it and quickly set it on fire.(AN)

20 The men of Ai looked back and saw the smoke of the city rising up into the sky,(AO) but they had no chance to escape in any direction; the Israelites who had been fleeing toward the wilderness had turned back against their pursuers. 21 For when Joshua and all Israel saw that the ambush had taken the city and that smoke was going up from it, they turned around(AP) and attacked the men of Ai. 22 Those in the ambush also came out of the city against them, so that they were caught in the middle, with Israelites on both sides. Israel cut them down, leaving them neither survivors nor fugitives.(AQ) 23 But they took the king of Ai alive(AR) and brought him to Joshua.

24 When Israel had finished killing all the men of Ai in the fields and in the wilderness where they had chased them, and when every one of them had been put to the sword, all the Israelites returned to Ai and killed those who were in it. 25 Twelve thousand men and women fell that day—all the people of Ai.(AS) 26 For Joshua did not draw back the hand that held out his javelin(AT) until he had destroyed[e](AU) all who lived in Ai.(AV) 27 But Israel did carry off for themselves the livestock and plunder of this city, as the Lord had instructed Joshua.(AW)

28 So Joshua burned(AX) Ai[f](AY) and made it a permanent heap of ruins,(AZ) a desolate place to this day.(BA) 29 He impaled the body of the king of Ai on a pole and left it there until evening. At sunset,(BB) Joshua ordered them to take the body from the pole and throw it down at the entrance of the city gate. And they raised a large pile of rocks(BC) over it, which remains to this day.

The Covenant Renewed at Mount Ebal

30 Then Joshua built on Mount Ebal(BD) an altar(BE) to the Lord, the God of Israel, 31 as Moses the servant of the Lord had commanded the Israelites. He built it according to what is written in the Book of the Law of Moses—an altar of uncut stones, on which no iron tool(BF) had been used. On it they offered to the Lord burnt offerings and sacrificed fellowship offerings.(BG) 32 There, in the presence of the Israelites, Joshua wrote on stones a copy of the law of Moses.(BH) 33 All the Israelites, with their elders, officials and judges, were standing on both sides of the ark of the covenant of the Lord, facing the Levitical(BI) priests who carried it. Both the foreigners living among them and the native-born(BJ) were there. Half of the people stood in front of Mount Gerizim and half of them in front of Mount Ebal,(BK) as Moses the servant of the Lord had formerly commanded when he gave instructions to bless the people of Israel.

34 Afterward, Joshua read all the words of the law—the blessings and the curses—just as it is written in the Book of the Law.(BL) 35 There was not a word of all that Moses had commanded that Joshua did not read to the whole assembly of Israel, including the women and children, and the foreigners who lived among them.(BM)

The Gibeonite Deception

Now when all the kings west of the Jordan heard about these things—the kings in the hill country,(BN) in the western foothills, and along the entire coast of the Mediterranean Sea(BO) as far as Lebanon(BP) (the kings of the Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites,(BQ) Hivites(BR) and Jebusites)(BS) they came together to wage war against Joshua and Israel.

Luke 16:1-18

The Parable of the Shrewd Manager

16 Jesus told his disciples: “There was a rich man whose manager was accused of wasting his possessions.(A) So he called him in and asked him, ‘What is this I hear about you? Give an account of your management, because you cannot be manager any longer.’

“The manager said to himself, ‘What shall I do now? My master is taking away my job. I’m not strong enough to dig, and I’m ashamed to beg— I know what I’ll do so that, when I lose my job here, people will welcome me into their houses.’

“So he called in each one of his master’s debtors. He asked the first, ‘How much do you owe my master?’

“‘Nine hundred gallons[a] of olive oil,’ he replied.

“The manager told him, ‘Take your bill, sit down quickly, and make it four hundred and fifty.’

“Then he asked the second, ‘And how much do you owe?’

“‘A thousand bushels[b] of wheat,’ he replied.

“He told him, ‘Take your bill and make it eight hundred.’

“The master commended the dishonest manager because he had acted shrewdly. For the people of this world(B) are more shrewd(C) in dealing with their own kind than are the people of the light.(D) I tell you, use worldly wealth(E) to gain friends for yourselves, so that when it is gone, you will be welcomed into eternal dwellings.(F)

10 “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much,(G) and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much. 11 So if you have not been trustworthy in handling worldly wealth,(H) who will trust you with true riches? 12 And if you have not been trustworthy with someone else’s property, who will give you property of your own?

13 “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.”(I)

14 The Pharisees, who loved money,(J) heard all this and were sneering at Jesus.(K) 15 He said to them, “You are the ones who justify yourselves(L) in the eyes of others, but God knows your hearts.(M) What people value highly is detestable in God’s sight.

Additional Teachings

16 “The Law and the Prophets were proclaimed until John.(N) Since that time, the good news of the kingdom of God is being preached,(O) and everyone is forcing their way into it. 17 It is easier for heaven and earth to disappear than for the least stroke of a pen to drop out of the Law.(P)

18 “Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery, and the man who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.(Q)

Psalm 82

Psalm 82

A psalm of Asaph.

God presides in the great assembly;
he renders judgment(A) among the “gods”:(B)

“How long will you[a] defend the unjust
and show partiality(C) to the wicked?[b](D)
Defend the weak and the fatherless;(E)
uphold the cause of the poor(F) and the oppressed.
Rescue the weak and the needy;
deliver them from the hand of the wicked.

“The ‘gods’ know nothing, they understand nothing.(G)
They walk about in darkness;(H)
all the foundations(I) of the earth are shaken.

“I said, ‘You are “gods”;(J)
you are all sons of the Most High.’
But you will die(K) like mere mortals;
you will fall like every other ruler.”

Rise up,(L) O God, judge(M) the earth,
for all the nations are your inheritance.(N)

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Friday April 12, 2019 (NIV)

Joshua 5:1-7:15

Now when all the Amorite kings west of the Jordan and all the Canaanite kings along the coast(A) heard how the Lord had dried up the Jordan before the Israelites until they[a] had crossed over, their hearts melted in fear(B) and they no longer had the courage to face the Israelites.

Circumcision and Passover at Gilgal

At that time the Lord said to Joshua, “Make flint knives(C) and circumcise(D) the Israelites again.” So Joshua made flint knives and circumcised the Israelites at Gibeath Haaraloth.[b]

Now this is why he did so: All those who came out of Egypt—all the men of military age(E)—died in the wilderness on the way after leaving Egypt.(F) All the people that came out had been circumcised, but all the people born in the wilderness during the journey from Egypt had not. The Israelites had moved about in the wilderness(G) forty years(H) until all the men who were of military age when they left Egypt had died, since they had not obeyed the Lord. For the Lord had sworn to them that they would not see the land he had solemnly promised their ancestors to give us,(I) a land flowing with milk and honey.(J) So he raised up their sons in their place, and these were the ones Joshua circumcised. They were still uncircumcised because they had not been circumcised on the way. And after the whole nation had been circumcised, they remained where they were in camp until they were healed.(K)

Then the Lord said to Joshua, “Today I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt from you.” So the place has been called Gilgal[c](L) to this day.

10 On the evening of the fourteenth day of the month,(M) while camped at Gilgal on the plains of Jericho, the Israelites celebrated the Passover.(N) 11 The day after the Passover, that very day, they ate some of the produce of the land:(O) unleavened bread(P) and roasted grain.(Q) 12 The manna stopped the day after[d] they ate this food from the land; there was no longer any manna for the Israelites, but that year they ate the produce of Canaan.(R)

The Fall of Jericho

13 Now when Joshua was near Jericho, he looked up and saw a man(S) standing in front of him with a drawn sword(T) in his hand. Joshua went up to him and asked, “Are you for us or for our enemies?”

14 “Neither,” he replied, “but as commander of the army of the Lord I have now come.” Then Joshua fell facedown(U) to the ground(V) in reverence, and asked him, “What message does my Lord[e] have for his servant?”

15 The commander of the Lord’s army replied, “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy.”(W) And Joshua did so.

Now the gates of Jericho(X) were securely barred because of the Israelites. No one went out and no one came in.

Then the Lord said to Joshua, “See, I have delivered(Y) Jericho into your hands, along with its king and its fighting men. March around the city once with all the armed men. Do this for six days. Have seven priests carry trumpets of rams’ horns(Z) in front of the ark. On the seventh day, march around the city seven times, with the priests blowing the trumpets.(AA) When you hear them sound a long blast(AB) on the trumpets, have the whole army give a loud shout;(AC) then the wall of the city will collapse and the army will go up, everyone straight in.”

So Joshua son of Nun called the priests and said to them, “Take up the ark of the covenant of the Lord and have seven priests carry trumpets in front of it.”(AD) And he ordered the army, “Advance(AE)! March around the city, with an armed guard going ahead of the ark(AF) of the Lord.”

When Joshua had spoken to the people, the seven priests carrying the seven trumpets before the Lord went forward, blowing their trumpets, and the ark of the Lord’s covenant followed them. The armed guard marched ahead of the priests who blew the trumpets, and the rear guard(AG) followed the ark. All this time the trumpets were sounding. 10 But Joshua had commanded the army, “Do not give a war cry, do not raise your voices, do not say a word until the day I tell you to shout. Then shout!(AH) 11 So he had the ark of the Lord carried around the city, circling it once. Then the army returned to camp and spent the night there.

12 Joshua got up early the next morning and the priests took up the ark of the Lord. 13 The seven priests carrying the seven trumpets went forward, marching before the ark of the Lord and blowing the trumpets. The armed men went ahead of them and the rear guard followed the ark of the Lord, while the trumpets kept sounding. 14 So on the second day they marched around the city once and returned to the camp. They did this for six days.

15 On the seventh day, they got up at daybreak and marched around the city seven times in the same manner, except that on that day they circled the city seven times.(AI) 16 The seventh time around, when the priests sounded the trumpet blast, Joshua commanded the army, “Shout! For the Lord has given you the city!(AJ) 17 The city and all that is in it are to be devoted[f](AK) to the Lord. Only Rahab the prostitute(AL) and all who are with her in her house shall be spared, because she hid(AM) the spies we sent. 18 But keep away from the devoted things,(AN) so that you will not bring about your own destruction by taking any of them. Otherwise you will make the camp of Israel liable to destruction(AO) and bring trouble(AP) on it. 19 All the silver and gold and the articles of bronze and iron(AQ) are sacred to the Lord and must go into his treasury.”

20 When the trumpets sounded,(AR) the army shouted, and at the sound of the trumpet, when the men gave a loud shout,(AS) the wall collapsed; so everyone charged straight in, and they took the city.(AT) 21 They devoted(AU) the city to the Lord and destroyed(AV) with the sword every living thing in it—men and women, young and old, cattle, sheep and donkeys.

22 Joshua said to the two men(AW) who had spied out(AX) the land, “Go into the prostitute’s house and bring her out and all who belong to her, in accordance with your oath to her.(AY) 23 So the young men who had done the spying went in and brought out Rahab, her father and mother, her brothers and sisters and all who belonged to her.(AZ) They brought out her entire family and put them in a place outside the camp of Israel.

24 Then they burned the whole city(BA) and everything in it, but they put the silver and gold and the articles of bronze and iron(BB) into the treasury of the Lord’s house.(BC) 25 But Joshua spared(BD) Rahab the prostitute,(BE) with her family and all who belonged to her, because she hid the men Joshua had sent as spies to Jericho(BF)—and she lives among the Israelites to this day.

26 At that time Joshua pronounced this solemn oath:(BG) “Cursed(BH) before the Lord is the one who undertakes to rebuild this city, Jericho:

“At the cost of his firstborn son
he will lay its foundations;
at the cost of his youngest
he will set up its gates.”(BI)

27 So the Lord was with Joshua,(BJ) and his fame spread(BK) throughout the land.

Achan’s Sin

But the Israelites were unfaithful in regard to the devoted things[g];(BL) Achan(BM) son of Karmi, the son of Zimri,[h] the son of Zerah,(BN) of the tribe of Judah,(BO) took some of them. So the Lord’s anger burned(BP) against Israel.(BQ)

Now Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai,(BR) which is near Beth Aven(BS) to the east of Bethel,(BT) and told them, “Go up and spy out(BU) the region.” So the men went up and spied out Ai.

When they returned to Joshua, they said, “Not all the army will have to go up against Ai. Send two or three thousand men to take it and do not weary the whole army, for only a few people live there.” So about three thousand went up; but they were routed by the men of Ai,(BV) who killed about thirty-six(BW) of them. They chased the Israelites from the city gate as far as the stone quarries and struck them down on the slopes. At this the hearts of the people melted in fear(BX) and became like water.

Then Joshua tore his clothes(BY) and fell facedown(BZ) to the ground before the ark of the Lord, remaining there till evening.(CA) The elders of Israel(CB) did the same, and sprinkled dust(CC) on their heads. And Joshua said, “Alas, Sovereign Lord, why(CD) did you ever bring this people across the Jordan to deliver us into the hands of the Amorites to destroy us?(CE) If only we had been content to stay on the other side of the Jordan! Pardon your servant, Lord. What can I say, now that Israel has been routed by its enemies? The Canaanites and the other people of the country will hear about this and they will surround us and wipe out our name from the earth.(CF) What then will you do for your own great name?(CG)

10 The Lord said to Joshua, “Stand up! What are you doing down on your face? 11 Israel has sinned;(CH) they have violated my covenant,(CI) which I commanded them to keep. They have taken some of the devoted things; they have stolen, they have lied,(CJ) they have put them with their own possessions.(CK) 12 That is why the Israelites cannot stand against their enemies;(CL) they turn their backs(CM) and run(CN) because they have been made liable to destruction.(CO) I will not be with you anymore(CP) unless you destroy whatever among you is devoted to destruction.

13 “Go, consecrate the people. Tell them, ‘Consecrate yourselves(CQ) in preparation for tomorrow; for this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: There are devoted things among you, Israel. You cannot stand against your enemies until you remove them.

14 “‘In the morning, present(CR) yourselves tribe by tribe. The tribe the Lord chooses(CS) shall come forward clan by clan; the clan the Lord chooses shall come forward family by family; and the family the Lord chooses shall come forward man by man. 15 Whoever is caught with the devoted things(CT) shall be destroyed by fire,(CU) along with all that belongs to him.(CV) He has violated the covenant(CW) of the Lord and has done an outrageous thing in Israel!’”(CX)

Luke 15

The Parable of the Lost Sheep(A)

15 Now the tax collectors(B) and sinners were all gathering around to hear Jesus. But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law muttered, “This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.”(C)

Then Jesus told them this parable:(D) “Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Doesn’t he leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it?(E) And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.’(F) I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.(G)

The Parable of the Lost Coin

“Or suppose a woman has ten silver coins[a] and loses one. Doesn’t she light a lamp, sweep the house and search carefully until she finds it? And when she finds it, she calls her friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost coin.’(H) 10 In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”(I)

The Parable of the Lost Son

11 Jesus continued: “There was a man who had two sons.(J) 12 The younger one said to his father, ‘Father, give me my share of the estate.’(K) So he divided his property(L) between them.

13 “Not long after that, the younger son got together all he had, set off for a distant country and there squandered his wealth(M) in wild living. 14 After he had spent everything, there was a severe famine in that whole country, and he began to be in need. 15 So he went and hired himself out to a citizen of that country, who sent him to his fields to feed pigs.(N) 16 He longed to fill his stomach with the pods that the pigs were eating, but no one gave him anything.

17 “When he came to his senses, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have food to spare, and here I am starving to death! 18 I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned(O) against heaven and against you. 19 I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired servants.’ 20 So he got up and went to his father.

“But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.(P)

21 “The son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you.(Q) I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’

22 “But the father said to his servants, ‘Quick! Bring the best robe(R) and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger(S) and sandals on his feet. 23 Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let’s have a feast and celebrate. 24 For this son of mine was dead and is alive again;(T) he was lost and is found.’ So they began to celebrate.(U)

25 “Meanwhile, the older son was in the field. When he came near the house, he heard music and dancing. 26 So he called one of the servants and asked him what was going on. 27 ‘Your brother has come,’ he replied, ‘and your father has killed the fattened calf because he has him back safe and sound.’

28 “The older brother became angry(V) and refused to go in. So his father went out and pleaded with him. 29 But he answered his father, ‘Look! All these years I’ve been slaving for you and never disobeyed your orders. Yet you never gave me even a young goat so I could celebrate with my friends. 30 But when this son of yours who has squandered your property(W) with prostitutes(X) comes home, you kill the fattened calf for him!’

31 “‘My son,’ the father said, ‘you are always with me, and everything I have is yours. 32 But we had to celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’”(Y)

Psalm 81

Psalm 81[a]

For the director of music. According to gittith.[b] Of Asaph.

Sing for joy to God our strength;
shout aloud to the God of Jacob!(A)
Begin the music, strike the timbrel,(B)
play the melodious harp(C) and lyre.(D)

Sound the ram’s horn(E) at the New Moon,(F)
and when the moon is full, on the day of our festival;
this is a decree for Israel,
an ordinance of the God of Jacob.(G)
When God went out against Egypt,(H)
he established it as a statute for Joseph.

I heard an unknown voice say:(I)

“I removed the burden(J) from their shoulders;(K)
their hands were set free from the basket.
In your distress you called(L) and I rescued you,
I answered(M) you out of a thundercloud;
I tested you at the waters of Meribah.[c](N)
Hear me, my people,(O) and I will warn you—
if you would only listen to me, Israel!
You shall have no foreign god(P) among you;
you shall not worship any god other than me.
10 I am the Lord your God,
who brought you up out of Egypt.(Q)
Open(R) wide your mouth and I will fill(S) it.

11 “But my people would not listen to me;
Israel would not submit to me.(T)
12 So I gave them over(U) to their stubborn hearts
to follow their own devices.

13 “If my people would only listen to me,(V)
if Israel would only follow my ways,
14 how quickly I would subdue(W) their enemies
and turn my hand against(X) their foes!
15 Those who hate the Lord would cringe(Y) before him,
and their punishment would last forever.
16 But you would be fed with the finest of wheat;(Z)
with honey from the rock I would satisfy you.”

Joshua 3:1-4:24, Luke 14:7-35, Palms 80:1-19, Proverbs 12:27-28

Today is the 11th day of April. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian and it’s great to be here with you as we move our way to the back half of the week and enter into the 101st day of our year together. Yesterday we finished the Torah or the Pentateuch, the first five books of the Bible and we began the book of Joshua and we’re just getting going, but this is a new era in the story. Today, today we will be crossing the Jordan River into the promised land. So, we’re reading from the New International Version this week. Joshua chapter 3 and 4.

Commentary:

Okay. So, we crossed over the Jordan River into the promised land today and you can just see the scene. A hoard of people crossing the Jordan River and setting up camp on the other side while everyone in the land is terrified, the closest city being Jericho. And, so, they would be on high alert. And what do we see happen here? Because what we see happen here is something we’ve been seeing happen and we will continue to see happen. So, the children of Israel, all of the tribes, they get to the other side of the Jordan River and what are they instructed to do? They’re instructed to bring 12 stones out of the Jordan River and stack them up representing the 12 tribes of Israel and that monument being stocked up, that pile of rocks as it were, is meant to be a memorial so that when future generations passed by, they can ask, “why are these pile of rocks here” and the story can be told. Oh, the pile of rocks is here because this is where we crossed the Jordan River. God dried it up and we crossed into this land, our homeland. The idea of creating a monument so that you do not forget what happened there continues until today, I imagine in all of our societies. I am most familiar with the culture that I live in here in the United States, but I’ve been all over the world, I’ve been in all kinds of different cultures and I’ve seen this very thing in all of them. So, like, there’s a battlefield not too far from where I live, there’s a monument because the battle happened there. It’s been erected and placed there because it’s a part of our American history, and it’s left so that we, the future generations, and those in the future who come by this place and see this monument and wonder what happened there will be able to find out what happened there. I’ve seen this in all kinds of cultures. I’ve been at genocide memorials all throughout the country of Rwanda in back villages far, far away from main roads even or places where things happen that shouldn’t be forgotten are kept as a memorial to remember. This is one of the reasons that we so deeply encourage journaling in some way as you take the adventure through the Bible and make it the rhythm of your life. If something is happening in your life that you need to not forget, or the Bible is speaking, God is speaking to you in some way, you should write it down so that you don’t forget because then you can review and see the monuments in your own life to God’s faithfulness. When you were standing at that battlefield and didn’t know what was going to happen and then it worked out or you had to depend on God for dear life and you didn’t know how you’re going to make it, but you did. Those are memorials. Those are piling up the rocks so that you do not forget who you are and where you’ve come from and who God is, which has been ultimately the message of the wilderness, which is ultimately the message of any wilderness we face. So, we’ve tried to bake this idea into the culture of the Daily Audio Bible community as much as we can. I mean, you can’t just pound things over and over and over and over until they’re not heard anymore, but this idea of remembering where you’ve come from and writing it down as you’re going to the Bible is part of our culture. You can take notes every day just using the Daily Audio Bible app, just little things that you might want to jot down that you don’t want to forget, just like a scratchpad, but we have also designed carefully and intentionally the Daily Audio Bible Journal and it doesn’t have a bunch…it’s not to instruct you…like, here’s how to make your life more efficient. It’s just there for you to write down whatever it is that becomes apparent to you as some sort of revelation or some sort of memorial to kind of Journal your way through your life and see what God has done and know that in future generations your story can still be told. And it may be your story of God’s faithfulness that actually sets right your great, great, great grandchildren. Who knows? So, yeah, the Daily Audio Bible Journal as well as all of the black wing line of pencils, that’s what I use. I found those as my mom was in her final months of her life and I thought they were so fun…I…just so interesting to think…ha…I haven’t written with a pencil since I was in elementary school. What would writing with the best pencil that can be made, what would that be like? And I just found a love for it. And, so, now I like to Journal in my own hand. I used to do it digitally, but I found that I journaled far less digitally. To just sit down and in my own hand, write my own story…yeah…there’s something to it. And we see this established, this rhythm, this idea, this concept in the Scriptures. And we see it very clearly as we crossed the Jordan River today. So, all these resources are available in the Daily Audio Bible shop, but it doesn’t take the Daily Audio Bible shop to write down your life. You can use the Daily Audio Bible app Journal free, no problem. All you need’s a piece of paper and something to write with, right, and a way to collect it. But it’s good to find a way to journal your way through the Bible. If God’s gonna speak to you, you should take notes. So, check that out.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for bringing us this far for giving us tools, practical tools like this, to chronicle the journey that we are on together with You. And as we just simply look back over the first 100 days of this year we can think of some things that You’ve spoken to us and then we can think of other things that were important, but we can’t quite remember because it’s getting just out of sight. And if we haven’t written down then it’s just becoming a part of the tapestry of our lives, rather than something that we can actually intentionally go back to and relearn and recommit ourselves to. So, we’re taking Your encouragement that we find in the Scriptures today to be more intentional about remembering what it is You’re speaking to us and what it is Your…how it is that You are leading us. Help us to understand what placing memorial stones in our lives would practically look like. Help us to know how it is that we can create remembrances that we need so that as we pass by that territory again we remember what You’ve done, and so as future generations may pass by the story can be told. Come Holy Spirit we pray. In Jesus’ name we ask. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hello Daily Audio Bible family, this is Emmanuel.

God bless everyone. Love you.

Amen.

Joshua 3-4

Crossing the Jordan

Early in the morning Joshua and all the Israelites set out from Shittim(A) and went to the Jordan,(B) where they camped before crossing over. After three days(C) the officers(D) went throughout the camp,(E) giving orders to the people: “When you see the ark of the covenant(F) of the Lord your God, and the Levitical(G) priests(H) carrying it, you are to move out from your positions and follow it. Then you will know which way to go, since you have never been this way before. But keep a distance of about two thousand cubits[a](I) between you and the ark; do not go near it.”

Joshua told the people, “Consecrate yourselves,(J) for tomorrow the Lord will do amazing things(K) among you.”

Joshua said to the priests, “Take up the ark of the covenant and pass on ahead of the people.” So they took it up and went ahead of them.

And the Lord said to Joshua, “Today I will begin to exalt you(L) in the eyes of all Israel, so they may know that I am with you as I was with Moses.(M) Tell the priests(N) who carry the ark of the covenant: ‘When you reach the edge of the Jordan’s waters, go and stand in the river.’”

Joshua said to the Israelites, “Come here and listen to the words of the Lord your God. 10 This is how you will know that the living God(O) is among you(P) and that he will certainly drive out before you the Canaanites, Hittites,(Q) Hivites, Perizzites,(R) Girgashites, Amorites and Jebusites.(S) 11 See, the ark of the covenant of the Lord of all the earth(T) will go into the Jordan ahead of you.(U) 12 Now then, choose twelve men(V) from the tribes of Israel, one from each tribe. 13 And as soon as the priests who carry the ark of the Lord—the Lord of all the earth(W)—set foot in the Jordan, its waters flowing downstream(X) will be cut off(Y) and stand up in a heap.(Z)

14 So when the people broke camp to cross the Jordan, the priests carrying the ark of the covenant(AA) went ahead(AB) of them. 15 Now the Jordan(AC) is at flood stage(AD) all during harvest.(AE) Yet as soon as the priests who carried the ark reached the Jordan and their feet touched the water’s edge, 16 the water from upstream stopped flowing.(AF) It piled up in a heap(AG) a great distance away, at a town called Adam in the vicinity of Zarethan,(AH) while the water flowing down(AI) to the Sea of the Arabah(AJ) (that is, the Dead Sea(AK)) was completely cut off.(AL) So the people crossed over opposite Jericho.(AM) 17 The priests(AN) who carried the ark of the covenant of the Lord stopped in the middle of the Jordan and stood on dry ground,(AO) while all Israel passed by until the whole nation had completed the crossing on dry ground.(AP)

When the whole nation had finished crossing the Jordan,(AQ) the Lord said to Joshua, “Choose twelve men(AR) from among the people, one from each tribe, and tell them to take up twelve stones(AS) from the middle of the Jordan,(AT) from right where the priests are standing, and carry them over with you and put them down at the place where you stay tonight.(AU)

So Joshua called together the twelve men(AV) he had appointed from the Israelites, one from each tribe, and said to them, “Go over before the ark of the Lord your God into the middle of the Jordan.(AW) Each of you is to take up a stone on his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the Israelites, to serve as a sign(AX) among you. In the future, when your children(AY) ask you, ‘What do these stones mean?’(AZ) tell them that the flow of the Jordan was cut off(BA) before the ark of the covenant of the Lord. When it crossed the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. These stones are to be a memorial(BB) to the people of Israel forever.”

So the Israelites did as Joshua commanded them. They took twelve stones(BC) from the middle of the Jordan,(BD) according to the number of the tribes of the Israelites, as the Lord had told Joshua;(BE) and they carried them over with them to their camp, where they put them down. Joshua set up the twelve stones(BF) that had been[b] in the middle of the Jordan at the spot where the priests who carried the ark of the covenant had stood. And they are there to this day.(BG)

10 Now the priests who carried the ark remained standing in the middle of the Jordan until everything the Lord had commanded Joshua was done by the people, just as Moses had directed Joshua. The people hurried over, 11 and as soon as all of them had crossed, the ark of the Lord and the priests came to the other side while the people watched. 12 The men of Reuben,(BH) Gad(BI) and the half-tribe of Manasseh(BJ) crossed over, ready for battle, in front of the Israelites,(BK) as Moses had directed them.(BL) 13 About forty thousand armed for battle(BM) crossed over(BN) before the Lord to the plains of Jericho for war.

14 That day the Lord exalted(BO) Joshua in the sight of all Israel; and they stood in awe of him all the days of his life, just as they had stood in awe of Moses.

15 Then the Lord said to Joshua, 16 “Command the priests carrying the ark of the covenant law(BP) to come up out of the Jordan.”

17 So Joshua commanded the priests, “Come up out of the Jordan.”

18 And the priests came up out of the river carrying the ark of the covenant of the Lord. No sooner had they set their feet on the dry ground than the waters of the Jordan returned to their place(BQ) and ran at flood stage(BR) as before.

19 On the tenth day of the first month the people went up from the Jordan and camped at Gilgal(BS) on the eastern border of Jericho. 20 And Joshua set up at Gilgal the twelve stones(BT) they had taken out of the Jordan. 21 He said to the Israelites, “In the future when your descendants ask their parents, ‘What do these stones mean?’(BU) 22 tell them, ‘Israel crossed the Jordan on dry ground.’(BV) 23 For the Lord your God dried up the Jordan before you until you had crossed over. The Lord your God did to the Jordan what he had done to the Red Sea[c] when he dried it up before us until we had crossed over.(BW) 24 He did this so that all the peoples of the earth might know(BX) that the hand of the Lord is powerful(BY) and so that you might always fear the Lord your God.(BZ)

Luke 14:7-35

When he noticed how the guests picked the places of honor at the table,(A) he told them this parable: “When someone invites you to a wedding feast, do not take the place of honor, for a person more distinguished than you may have been invited. If so, the host who invited both of you will come and say to you, ‘Give this person your seat.’ Then, humiliated, you will have to take the least important place. 10 But when you are invited, take the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he will say to you, ‘Friend, move up to a better place.’ Then you will be honored in the presence of all the other guests. 11 For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”(B)

12 Then Jesus said to his host, “When you give a luncheon or dinner, do not invite your friends, your brothers or sisters, your relatives, or your rich neighbors; if you do, they may invite you back and so you will be repaid. 13 But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind,(C) 14 and you will be blessed. Although they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.”(D)

The Parable of the Great Banquet(E)

15 When one of those at the table with him heard this, he said to Jesus, “Blessed is the one who will eat at the feast(F) in the kingdom of God.”(G)

16 Jesus replied: “A certain man was preparing a great banquet and invited many guests. 17 At the time of the banquet he sent his servant to tell those who had been invited, ‘Come, for everything is now ready.’

18 “But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said, ‘I have just bought a field, and I must go and see it. Please excuse me.’

19 “Another said, ‘I have just bought five yoke of oxen, and I’m on my way to try them out. Please excuse me.’

20 “Still another said, ‘I just got married, so I can’t come.’

21 “The servant came back and reported this to his master. Then the owner of the house became angry and ordered his servant, ‘Go out quickly into the streets and alleys of the town and bring in the poor, the crippled, the blind and the lame.’(H)

22 “‘Sir,’ the servant said, ‘what you ordered has been done, but there is still room.’

23 “Then the master told his servant, ‘Go out to the roads and country lanes and compel them to come in, so that my house will be full. 24 I tell you, not one of those who were invited will get a taste of my banquet.’”(I)

The Cost of Being a Disciple

25 Large crowds were traveling with Jesus, and turning to them he said: 26 “If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even their own life—such a person cannot be my disciple.(J) 27 And whoever does not carry their cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.(K)

28 “Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it? 29 For if you lay the foundation and are not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule you, 30 saying, ‘This person began to build and wasn’t able to finish.’

31 “Or suppose a king is about to go to war against another king. Won’t he first sit down and consider whether he is able with ten thousand men to oppose the one coming against him with twenty thousand? 32 If he is not able, he will send a delegation while the other is still a long way off and will ask for terms of peace. 33 In the same way, those of you who do not give up everything you have cannot be my disciples.(L)

34 “Salt is good, but if it loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again?(M) 35 It is fit neither for the soil nor for the manure pile; it is thrown out.(N)

“Whoever has ears to hear, let them hear.”(O)

Psalm 80

Psalm 80[a]

For the director of music. To the tune of “The Lilies of the Covenant.” Of Asaph. A psalm.

Hear us, Shepherd of Israel,
you who lead Joseph like a flock.(A)
You who sit enthroned between the cherubim,(B)
shine forth before Ephraim, Benjamin and Manasseh.(C)
Awaken(D) your might;
come and save us.(E)

Restore(F) us,(G) O God;
make your face shine on us,
that we may be saved.(H)

How long,(I) Lord God Almighty,
will your anger smolder(J)
against the prayers of your people?
You have fed them with the bread of tears;(K)
you have made them drink tears by the bowlful.(L)
You have made us an object of derision[b] to our neighbors,
and our enemies mock us.(M)

Restore us, God Almighty;
make your face shine on us,
that we may be saved.(N)

You transplanted a vine(O) from Egypt;
you drove out(P) the nations and planted(Q) it.
You cleared the ground for it,
and it took root and filled the land.
10 The mountains were covered with its shade,
the mighty cedars with its branches.
11 Its branches reached as far as the Sea,[c]
its shoots as far as the River.[d](R)

12 Why have you broken down its walls(S)
so that all who pass by pick its grapes?
13 Boars from the forest ravage(T) it,
and insects from the fields feed on it.
14 Return to us, God Almighty!
Look down from heaven and see!(U)
Watch over this vine,
15 the root your right hand has planted,
the son[e] you have raised up for yourself.

16 Your vine is cut down, it is burned with fire;(V)
at your rebuke(W) your people perish.
17 Let your hand rest on the man at your right hand,
the son of man(X) you have raised up for yourself.
18 Then we will not turn away from you;
revive(Y) us, and we will call on your name.

19 Restore us, Lord God Almighty;
make your face shine on us,
that we may be saved.

Deuteronomy 34:1 – Joshua 2:24, Luke 13:22-14:6, Psalms 79:1-13, Proverbs 12:26

Today is the 10th day of April. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian. It is great to be here with you on hump day as we move through the center of the week. And today we’ll be concluding the book of Deuteronomy, which also means we will have concluded what is known as the Torah or the Pentateuch, the first five books of the Bible. And what ground we have covered but we will be closing that particular delineation in the Bible and moving into the next era when we begin the book of Joshua and we’ll talk about the book of Joshua we get there in a few minutes. But first these are the final words of the book of Deuteronomy. Deuteronomy, chapter 34 and we are reading from the New International Version this week because.

Introduction to the book of Joshua:

Okay. So, that concludes book of Deuteronomy, which brings us to the book of Joshua, which in a lot of ways is an exhilarating book because, I mean, it’s almost from the very beginning of the Bible we’ve been hearing about this mythic promised land and we were in that land with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and their stories unfolding but it didn’t belong to the generations. The patriarchs hadn’t proliferated enough to have large enough families for tribes and leadership and so forth. Remember the story that took them to Egypt where they did become a mighty and massive people over the course of for centuries, four and half centuries almost. And then we’ve been in the wilderness ever since. And, so, being able to actually cross the Jordan River into the promised land with these people, this is what we’ve been heading toward almost since the beginning. And now Moses has died having been able to see into the promised land but not going into it and Joshua has stepped up as a leader in Israel. And Joshua translated into English means Savior. If we go back to the original Hebrew, Joshua is Yeshua, Joshua. So, not that Joshua was Jesus. I’m just pointing out the appearance of the thread, the redemptive thread that kind of winds its way through the Scriptures. And as we step into Joshua we’ll see that that God has prepared the land for his people. And it has been promised for generations as we know from the Scriptures, but they’re not gonna just march in and take it. They’re gonna have to contend for it. They’re on a great mission with God and to accomplish the mission they’re gonna have to partner with God and that partnership’s gonna be against all odds, humanly speaking, but with God they will take the land. And we’ll notice that God asks them to do some pretty unconventional things along the way. He has no problem confounding conventional wisdom with almost bizarre instructions that sometimes wouldn’t make logical sense to the human mind, but this is still true today. This is still what it’s like to walk with and collaborate with God. And this is why we have the gift of the Holy Spirit’s guidance. And this is why we have to walk with God, to be a people intertwined in a relationship with God. Otherwise we’re just kind of like bulldozing our way through life hoping we don’t destroy something along the way and hoping that we’re building a path to somewhere when we actually have our Creator, our Father who is here Fathering us and rather than bulldozing a path to who knows where, we’re was supposed to be building His very kingdom. So, in a very real way, all these years that the children of Israel have been in the wilderness, all this time that we’ve been wandering with them and learning that they are utterly, completely dependent on God. They’ve been learning to obey, and they’ve also learned what disobedience and rebellion looks like. Now they have to go across into the promised land with the full faith in God’s going to show up because it’s against all odds and full faith in the promise that he gave their ancestors that there was a promised land. And, so, we’re gonna witness one of the most glorious moments in the Bible, one of the richest times for the children of Israel, perhaps one of the greatest, most monumental moments in ancient Israel’s existence, to cross the Jordan River. And we’ll see all of that. But that’s not the end of the story and soon enough we’ll see that they do begin to fall away, and they do begin to move back toward rebellion. But for now, we’re at the precipice and we’re about to cross over the Jordan River and that’s what brings us to Joshua chapter 1.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word and on this the 100th day of the year we acknowledge You and all that You have begun and are continuing to do in our lives because we are embracing this rhythm of allowing Your word access to our hearts every day. We thank You for bringing us all the way through the Torah, the law, bringing us into this next era. And as we cross the Jordan River with the children of Israel we cross into a new season and a new part of the story, but the story still very clearly mimics our own lives. And, so, we open our hearts to all of Your leadership and direction, for Your comfort and rebuke, for You to Father us and lead us onto the narrow path of Jesus was just speaking of as we read from the gospel of Luke. This narrow path, this is what we seek, this is what leads to life, this is what leads us on the road we were intended to walk. And we confess, sometimes it’s not clear whether what road we’re on. And yet, as long as we are are with You we are on the right road. So, as we continue this season of Lent, this time of repentance, these 40 days, to sit with the fact that our eternity came at a high cost, at a dear price and that You were willing to pay that price to rescue us. And, so, our only response can be surrender and asking that You would reorder our lives appropriately, that nothing is off limits to You and we are hiding nothing from You or from ourselves. We are asking Your Holy Spirit to invade our space and disrupt us as needed and to lead us into all truth and to comfort us as we walk the narrow path. Come Holy Spirit we pray. Thank You for bringing us these 100 days into this year. We pray these things in the name of Jesus, our Savior. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Hi Daily Audio Bible family, it’s Christine from Washington state. I am needing prayer. I feel bad. Continuing to pray for my marriage but I just don’t feel like God’s telling me to leave. The marriage has been so bad for so long. My husband…I mean…I just want a partner, I want my friend, I want to be able to talk to him. And I mean…he won’t let me see any of our…I can’t even see my homeowner’s insurance and he’s gone all the time. I’m raising the kids by myself and he supports us, and I love him but he just, you know, he’ll just get up in the morning and take off and go away for a couple days and tell me on his way out, you know, or he’s already there. And, so, I love him and I’m praying for him and I just want his heart to turn back home. And it’s been since we had kids. And the kids are, you know, 18 and 14 or 17 and 14 almost 18 but it seems like since we had children he’s just checked out and he tells people how awful I am and I know that’s the world, that’s supposed to matter but it does hurt my heart and, you know, a husband is supposed to love you and protect you. To have them always treating you like your bad, it’s really sad. So, I’m just asking for prayer for my husband just to love me. I’m just so alone. I’m so thankful for this community and I am praying for all of you, all the marriages, all the illnesses, and I love you guys. Thank you.

Good morning DAB family this is Walta again, the Burning Bush that will not be Devoured for the Glory of our God and King. Guys, I didn’t realize I’ve been listening to the DABC so I haven’t been really listening to DAB, but I still miss you guys. Calling with a praise report. You guys know my story. I had left Arizona in 2013, 2012 to move to Liberia with my then husband and my kids and then 2014, Ebola, my e ex-husband and I got separated and due to pressures from his wnd we ended up getting a divorce in 2016. And I may not have given you guys all this detail. The Bush continues to burn, but anyway I just called to give a praise report that I got married to a loving man of God and it’s weird because this definitely was not on my list of prayers, but sometimes God sees a need and he meets it. And I’m so grateful that God has restored all of what the __ of all my losses, my mother’s…God is the only thing that I feel like has not been, you know, cannot be replaced but I praise God for the memories. He’s always in my heart. But guys, I just wanted to say thanks to all of you guys who prayed for me throughout all the changes in my life and I’m not saying that things are going to be perfect moving forward but I’m just grateful for this man of God. His name is Albert. Please keep him in your prayers. I’ll talk to you soon. Bye.

Hi, this is Pearl from Wales. I just want to thank Christie from Kentucky. I listen to Daily Audio Bible every day and you just rescued praise from me because this is a fantastic community. And it’s been really painful over the last few days listening to the different advice to the lady who says she’s met a godly man. As a single Christian I can tell you there’s opportunities for sex every day of the week or most days of the week and we choose whether we’re godly or not. If God’s given you a husband __ you’re not blessed by having a Christian man, a godly man in your life for you to aspire him…your husband to be like him. You’re being tempted, it’s by the devil, it leads to nothing but death and destruction of your family life, of the home life, of the comforts and usefulness God. Stand strong sister, play in the promises of God in your life. But thank you for that positive prayer at the end because it really brought me up. I want to…right at the end of my way it goes to prayer and when it gets…oh boy…it just pushes me right to the end. But thank you. I Iift DAB every day and thank you for everything you’re all doing. Bye-bye.

I’m Janina, I’ve been listening to the Daily Audio Bible for over a year. My heart goes out to all of you that call in and I pray for you. I’m a first-time caller. I’m calling to ask for your prayers. In August I had two unexpected surgeries within a week of each other - __ cancer removed from my leg and major oral surgery to prepare for an implant. I was non-weight bearing for three weeks and when I could bear weight again I had trouble walking in my knee joints, back, and throughout my body. After several months of physical therapy and consulting many doctors I’ve been diagnosed white hypermobility syndrome and with an autoimmune condition causing inflammation in my toes that they can’t identify. Some of this inflammation might be caused by __ hypermobility syndrome. Due to my type of immobile joints, I have arthritis in my hips, knees, thumbs and __. In addition, I have…a month ago I was diagnosed with frozen shoulder, so I can’t move my left arm much. Also, on March 6 I was…I had a post put in for my implant and it got infected. __ . I’m of the third round of antibiotics. There’s still some sort of __. I’m very emotional and I cry often. I pray. There are times when my mind goes far into the future __ through. __ I pray that the oral infection will be gone and by __ will be completely healthy with a ___. Please also pray that the inflammation in my body will return to normal levels and my condition will improve, my ability to walk without __ be restored. Thank you.
