Zechariah 2-3

The Vision of the Measuring Line

In another vision I saw a man with a measuring line in his hand. “Where are you going?” I asked.

“To measure Jerusalem,” he answered, “to see how long and how wide it is.”

Then I saw the angel who had been speaking to me step forward, and another angel came to meet him. The first one said to the other, “Run and tell that young man with the measuring line that there are going to be so many people and so much livestock in Jerusalem that it will be too big to have walls. The Lord has promised that he himself will be a wall of fire around the city to protect it and that he will live there in all his glory.”

The Exiles Are Called to Come Home

6-7 The Lord said to his people, “I scattered you in all directions. But now, you exiles, escape from Babylonia and return to Jerusalem. Anyone who strikes you strikes what is most precious to me.”

So the Lord Almighty[a] sent me with this message for the nations that had plundered his people: “The Lord himself will fight against you, and you will be plundered by the people who were once your servants.”

When this happens, everyone will know that the Lord Almighty sent me.

10 The Lord said, “Sing for joy, people of Jerusalem! I am coming to live among you!”

11 At that time many nations will come to the Lord and become his people. He will live among you, and you will know that he has sent me to you. 12 Once again Judah will be the special possession of the Lord in his sacred land, and Jerusalem will be the city he loves most of all.

13 Be silent, everyone, in the presence of the Lord, for he is coming from his holy dwelling place.

The Prophet's Vision of the High Priest

(A)In another vision the Lord showed me the High Priest Joshua standing before the angel of the Lord. And there beside Joshua stood Satan,[b] ready to bring an accusation against him. (B)The angel of the Lord[c] said to Satan, “May the Lord condemn you, Satan! May the Lord, who loves Jerusalem, condemn you. This man is like a stick snatched from the fire.”

Joshua was standing there, wearing filthy clothes. The angel said to his heavenly attendants, “Take away the filthy clothes this man is wearing.” Then he said to Joshua, “I have taken away your sin and will give you new clothes to wear.”

He commanded the attendants to put[d] a clean turban on Joshua's head. They did so, and then they put the new clothes on him while the angel of the Lord stood there.

Then the angel told Joshua that the Lord Almighty had said: “If you obey my laws and perform the duties I have assigned you, then you will continue to be in charge of my Temple and its courts, and I will hear your prayers, just as I hear the prayers of the angels who are in my presence. (C)Listen then, Joshua, you who are the High Priest; and listen, you fellow priests of his, you that are the sign of a good future: I will reveal my servant, who is called The Branch! I am placing in front of Joshua a single stone with seven facets. I will engrave an inscription on it, and in a single day I will take away the sin of this land. 10 (D)When that day comes, each of you will invite your neighbor to come and enjoy peace and security, surrounded by your vineyards and fig trees.”

Revelation 13

The Two Beasts

13 (A)Then I saw a beast coming up out of the sea. It had ten horns and seven heads; on each of its horns there was a crown, and on each of its heads there was a name that was insulting to God. (B)The beast looked like a leopard, with feet like a bear's feet and a mouth like a lion's mouth. The dragon gave the beast his own power, his throne, and his vast authority. One of the heads of the beast seemed to have been fatally wounded, but the wound had healed. The whole earth was amazed and followed the beast. Everyone worshiped the dragon because he had given his authority to the beast. They worshiped the beast also, saying, “Who is like the beast? Who can fight against it?”

(C)The beast was allowed to make proud claims which were insulting to God, and it was permitted to have authority for forty-two months. It began to curse God, his name, the place where he lives, and all those who live in heaven. (D)It was allowed to fight against God's people and to defeat them, and it was given authority over every tribe, nation, language, and race. (E)All people living on earth will worship it, except those whose names were written before the creation of the world in the book of the living which belongs to the Lamb that was killed.

“Listen, then, if you have ears! 10 (F)Whoever is meant to be captured will surely be captured; whoever is meant to be killed by the sword will surely be killed by the sword. This calls for endurance and faith on the part of God's people.”

11 Then I saw another beast, which came up out of the earth. It had two horns like a lamb's horns, and it spoke like a dragon. 12 It used the vast authority of the first beast in its presence. It forced the earth and all who live on it to worship the first beast, whose wound had healed. 13 This second beast performed great miracles; it made fire come down out of heaven to earth in the sight of everyone. 14 And it deceived all the people living on earth by means of the miracles which it was allowed to perform in the presence of the first beast. The beast told them to build an image in honor of the beast that had been wounded by the sword and yet lived. 15 The second beast was allowed to breathe life into the image of the first beast, so that the image could talk and put to death all those who would not worship it. 16 The beast forced all the people, small and great, rich and poor, slave and free, to have a mark placed on their right hands or on their foreheads. 17 No one could buy or sell without this mark, that is, the beast's name or the number that stands for the name.

18 This calls for wisdom. Whoever is intelligent can figure out the meaning of the number of the beast, because the number stands for the name of someone. Its number is 666.

Psalm 141

An Evening Prayer[a]

141 I call to you, Lord; help me now!
Listen to me when I call to you.
(A)Receive my prayer as incense,
my uplifted hands as an evening sacrifice.

Lord, place a guard at my mouth,
a sentry at the door of my lips.
Keep me from wanting to do wrong
and from joining evil people in their wickedness.
May I never take part in their feasts.

Good people may punish me and rebuke me in kindness,
but I will never accept honor from evil people,
because I am always praying against their evil deeds.
When their rulers are thrown down from rocky cliffs,
the people will admit that my words were true.
Like wood that is split and chopped into bits,
so their bones are scattered at the edge of the grave.[b]

But I keep trusting in you, my Sovereign Lord.
I seek your protection;
don't let me die!
Protect me from the traps they have set for me,
from the snares of those evildoers.
10 May the wicked fall into their own traps
while I go by unharmed.

Proverbs 30:18-20

18 There are four things that are too mysterious for me to understand:

19 (A)an eagle flying in the sky,
a snake moving on a rock,
a ship finding its way over the sea,
and a man and a woman falling in love.

20 This is how an unfaithful wife acts: she commits adultery, takes a bath, and says, “But I haven't done anything wrong!”

Zechariah 1:1-21, Rev 12:1-17, Psalms 140:1-13, Proverbs 30:17

Today is the 21st day of December. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian…I was distracted…today would’ve been my parents wedding anniversary. I just would have to get out a calendar to even add up the years that it would’ve been, but of course we’ve lost both of them over…over the years, but it’s interesting the things that take you back, right? All of us have lost someone along the way and there’s just little things that come out of nowhere. So, it’s December 2st and boom…there were my parents and I think of them lovingly. Nevertheless, let's…let’s continue our journey. So, it is December 21st and we are ending another week together now and preparing to move into Christmas week. And we’ve been moving quickly through the minor prophets, practically reading a book a day and so were encountering another book in the minor prophets and this one is called Zechariah but we’re not going to finish Zechariah today. Actually, Zechariah is…like we finally reached a place where we’re gonna camp out for a minute. So, we’re in the book of Revelation in the New Testament, which will take us to the end of the year. Zechariah will take us to within two days of the end of the year. And we read the book of Haggai yesterday and we talked about that.

Introduction to the book of Zechariah:

Zechariah and Haggai were contemporaries with each other, even though Zechariah continued his ministry long after Haggai did. And Haggai and Zechariah were prophesying actually in the same place at the same time and for the same reason, which was the rebuilding of the Temple. So, Zechariah’s grandfather Edo was named among the of the first of the leaders of the priestly families who were able to come back, the first wave coming back from exile with Zerubbabel. So, this tells the Zechariah was…probably he was a priest or at least he was from a priestly family. The name Zechariah means God remembers. And remembering the covenant and the restoration that comes from the covenant is…is what this book is about. So, Zechariah’s longer obviously than Haggai if it’s going to take us all the wy through two days from the end of the year. So, it’s a lot longer, which means it’s a lot broader in its scope. Zechariah will tell us about eight, night visions that he experienced. And those have kind of an apocalyptic nature to them highly symbolic. Not unfamiliar with what we’re reading in the book of Revelation. And Zechariah also foretells a coming Messiah. And some of these verses, we can…we can recognize them right away like, “oh people of Zion, shout in triumph. People of Jerusalem your King is coming. He is righteous and victorious yet he’s humble, riding on a donkey, riding on a donkey’s colt.” So, because of these foretelling’s of a Messiah is coming, Zechariah is quoted in Matthew, Mark, John and Revelation in reference to Jesus. And ultimately, from Zechariah we are to be reminded that God is utterly powerful, absolutely sovereign in all things and at all times and in all places and we should find that very encouraging. And, so, we’re reading from the God’s Word Translation this week, which is today. And, so, we begin. Zechariah chapter 1.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word and we thank You for another week in Your word. And, wow! There’s not too many of these endings of weeks left in this year. And, so, we thank You for Your faithfulness. Thank You for all You’ve done in our lives and for all that You have yet to do this year in our lives. And we do acknowledge that we’re moving into Christmas week. And, so, it is a time of…of…of supreme rejoicing. And, so, we ask Holy Spirit that You would come to us with comfort and joy, with peace on earth and goodwill toward men. And may that be displayed on the earth through we, Your children, who are Your ambassadors upon this earth. So, may Your peace and comfort indwell us that we might share it with those who are all around us. And we pray this in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Zechariah 1

Turn from Your Evil Ways

In the eighth month of Darius’ second year as king, the Lord spoke his word to the prophet Zechariah, who was the son of Berechiah and the grandson of Iddo. He said, “The Lord was very angry with your ancestors. Tell the people, ‘This is what the Lord of Armies says: Return to me, declares the Lord of Armies, and I will return to you, says the Lord of Armies.’ Don’t be like your ancestors, who heard the earlier prophets preach to them, ‘This is what the Lord of Armies says: Turn from your evil ways and your evil deeds.’ But they didn’t listen or pay attention to me, declares the Lord. Your ancestors—where are they now? And the prophets—are they still alive? Didn’t my warnings and my laws, which I’ve commanded my servants the prophets to preach, finally catch up with your ancestors? Then your ancestors turned away from their sins and said, ‘The Lord of Armies has done to us what he had planned to do. He has dealt with us as our ways and deeds deserve.’”

The Lord Will Comfort Zion

On the twenty-fourth day of the eleventh month (the month of Shebat) in Darius’ second year as king, the Lord spoke his word to the prophet Zechariah, who was the son of Berechiah and the grandson of Iddo.

During that night I saw a man riding on a red horse. He was standing among the myrtle trees in a ravine. Behind him were red, chestnut, and white horses.

“What do these horses mean, sir?” I asked.

The angel who was speaking with me answered, “I will show you what they mean.”

10 The man standing among the myrtle trees explained, “They’re the horses the Lord has sent to patrol the earth.” 11 Then they reported to the Messenger of the Lord standing among the myrtle trees, “We have patrolled the earth. The whole world is at rest and in peace.”

12 Then the Messenger of the Lord said, “Lord of Armies, how much longer until you show compassion to Jerusalem and the cities of Judah? You’ve been angry with them for 70 years.” 13 The Lord responded to the angel who was speaking with me, using kind and comforting words.

14 The angel who was speaking with me said, “Announce: This is what the Lord of Armies says: I’m very jealous about Jerusalem and Zion, 15 and I’m very angry with the nations who think they are at ease. I was only a little angry, but they made things worse. 16 This is what the Lord of Armies says: I have returned to Jerusalem with compassion. My house will be rebuilt in it, declares the Lord of Armies. A measuring line will be used to rebuild Jerusalem.

17 “Announce again: This is what the Lord of Armies says: My cities will overflow with prosperity once more. The Lord will again comfort Zion and will again choose Jerusalem.”[a]

Punishment for the Nations That Scattered Judah

18 I looked up and saw four animal horns. 19 So I asked the angel who was speaking with me, “What do these horns mean?”

He said to me, “These are the horns of the nations that scattered Judah, Israel, and Jerusalem.”

20 Then the Lord showed me four craftsmen. 21 I asked, “What are they going to do?”

He answered, “Those horns scattered Judah so widely that no one could lift up his head. But the craftsmen have come to terrify them, to throw down the horns of the nations. The nations raised their horns to scatter the land of Judah.”

Revelation 12

Two Signs

12 A spectacular sign appeared in the sky: There was a woman who was dressed in the sun, who had the moon under her feet and a crown of 12 stars on her head. She was pregnant. She cried out from labor pains and the agony of giving birth.

Another sign appeared in the sky: a huge fiery red serpent with seven heads, ten horns, and seven crowns on its heads. Its tail swept away one-third of the stars in the sky and threw them down to earth. The serpent stood in front of the woman who was going to give birth so that it could devour her child when it was born. She gave birth to a son, a boy, who is to rule all the nations with an iron scepter. Her child was snatched away and taken to God and to his throne. Then the woman fled into the wilderness where God had prepared a place for her so that she might be taken care of for 1,260 days.

Then a war broke out in heaven. Michael and his angels had to fight a war with the serpent. The serpent and its angels fought. But it was not strong enough, and there was no longer any place for them in heaven. The huge serpent was thrown down. That ancient snake, named Devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world, was thrown down to earth. Its angels were thrown down with it.

10 Then I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying,

“Now the salvation, power, kingdom of our God,
and the authority of his Messiah have come.
The one accusing our brothers and sisters,
the one accusing them day and night in the presence of our God,
has been thrown out.
11 They won the victory over him because of the blood of the lamb
and the word of their testimony.
They didn’t love their life so much that they refused to give it up.
12 Be glad for this reason, heavens and those who live in them.
How horrible it is for the earth and the sea
because the Devil has come down to them with fierce anger,
knowing that he has little time left.”

13 When the serpent saw that it had been thrown down to earth, it persecuted the woman who had given birth to the boy. 14 The woman was given the two wings of the large eagle in order to fly away from the snake to her place in the wilderness, where she could be taken care of for a time, times, and half a time. 15 The snake’s mouth poured out a river of water behind the woman in order to sweep her away. 16 The earth helped the woman by opening its mouth and swallowing the river which had poured out of the serpent’s mouth. 17 The serpent became angry with the woman. So it went away to fight with her other children, the ones who keep God’s commands and hold on to the testimony of Jesus.

18 The serpent stood on the sandy shore of the sea.[a]

Psalm 140

Psalm 140

For the choir leader; a psalm by David.

Rescue me from evil people, O Lord.
Keep me safe from violent people.
They plan evil things in their hearts.
They start fights every day.
They make their tongues as sharp as a snake’s fang.
Their lips hide the venom of poisonous snakes. Selah

Protect me from the hands of wicked people, O Lord.
Keep me safe from violent people.
They try to trip me.
Arrogant people have laid a trap for me.
They have spread out a net with ropes.
They have set traps for me along the road. Selah

I said to the Lord, “You are my God.”
O Lord, open your ears to hear my plea for pity.
O Lord Almighty, the strong one who saves me,
you have covered my head in the day of battle.
O Lord, do not give wicked people what they want.
Do not let their evil plans succeed,
or they will become arrogant. Selah

Let the heads of those who surround me
be covered with their own threats.
10 Let burning coals fall on them.
Let them be thrown into a pit, never to rise again.
11 Do not let slanderers prosper on earth.
Let evil hunt down violent people with one blow after another.

12 I know that the Lord will defend the rights of those who are oppressed
and the cause of those who are needy.
13 Indeed, righteous people will give thanks to your name.
Decent people will live in your presence.

Haggai 1:1-2:23, Revelations 11:1-19, Psalms 139:1-24, Proverbs 30:15-16

Today is the 20th day of December. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian. It is great to be here with you today as we come in and find our place around the Global Campfire for the next step forward in the Scriptures. And as we move ourselves into the end of this week, we will encounter a new book. Surprise. Today’s book, and we will read the entire book in the Old Testament is called Haggai. And usually our custom is to…to talk about a book that we’re going to enter into or that we’re going to read in its entirety before we do that so that we have some context for it but I’m gonna flip that a little bit. And we’ll talk about Haggai at the end today once you had a chance to read it. And that might help us glean some more meaning for it that we can take into our day and take into the rest of this month and into our lives. So, we’re reading from the God’s Word Translation this week and we’ll read the entire book of Haggai, which contains two chapters.

Commentary:

Okay. So, let’s go back and just to review some of the territory that we encountered today, especially in the book of Haggai. So, Haggai is another one of the books that we know as the minor prophets. It’s the 12th of the minor prophets and like the other minor prophets there’s not a bunch to go on to find out, like who is…who was Haggai. And to begin to investigate this we just need to remind ourselves we need to go back to the time that this is taking place. We…we will recall the fact that the kingdom of Israel split into two kingdoms, northern and southern kingdoms, and we will recall through our journey this year that both of those kingdoms, the kingdom of Israel in the North and the kingdom of Judah in the south, both were conquered eventually. So, the Assyrian Empire conquered Israel, the 10 tribes of the north and took them into exile and they disappeared…like they were they were never cohesive tribes again. The kingdom of Judah was conquered by Babylon and we’ve read a lot about that story and a lot of prophetic utterances from within that time. And we recall that Babylon was then subsequently conquered by Persia and then the exiles were allowed to begin to return back to their homeland. And this is the time that we find ourselves in in Haggai. And we should note, because it’s so easy to miss because, you know, we’re just moving through the Scriptures that…these exiles, the destruction of the promised land and the displacement of the Hebrew people, this occupies a considerable amount of the Old Testament. This was a devastating thing to these people. So, we know that Haggai was among those who returned from the Babylonian exile and he was living in Jerusalem. And probably he was one of the first, the first wave of exiles that were allowed to return to a destroyed city. And we also know that Haggai, he had access to people who were in power because the book of Haggai tells us who it is to. The message was delivered to the Zerubbabel, the governor of Judah. And we should remember that name because we learned about Zerubbabel. We followed his story in the book of Ezra and Nehemiah. But the book of Haggai also says that Zerubbabel and Joshua, the high priest, were to receive the message. So, obviously he had access to give important message…messages to important and powerful people. And the message that Haggai received from the Lord was hopeful and maybe even more motivational. But we have to understand why. And that’s why we were just talking about some of the territory that we’ve covered the get here. Babylon did conquer Jerusalem and Jerusalem’s people were lead into exile somewhere around 586 B.C. And then Babylon, as we just mentioned, was conquered by the Persian Empire in 539 B.C. And, so, the Persian kingdom, the new ruler, King Cyrus allowed the first wave of exiles to go back to Jerusalem, under the leadership of Zerubbabel who was in charge around 538 B.C., like a year later. Haggai’s message is 18 more years in the future, in 520 B.C. So, the exiles, the first wave of exiles have been back in the land of promise for 18 years. And, incidentally, Haggai’s prophecies are some of the most precisely dated utterances in the Bible. Haggai, was prophesying between August 29th through December 18th 520 B.C. So, anyway, the first wave of exiles is able to return from their captivity in Babylon and to begin to resettle a homeland that had been lost. And for 18 years the temple was not complete. So, all kinds of things came against people. We read of these things in other books - political opposition, intimidation, right? Surrounding nations threatening. Just…just all of the unrest just halted the efforts. Instead, the people were building their own homes and building their own lives, but they were building new homes and new lives without the temple being the centerpiece of their culture, which it had always been. We will remember some of the agonizing utterances that came out of the exile about the destruction of the Temple and the captors asking people to sing songs of…of their homeland by the river Kabbar. And how could they do that if they forget Jerusalem? How could they do that if…if the temple is lost? And, so, now the people are back for 18 years and they’re able to be back in their land and build the temple again and they don’t. And, so, God comes to Haggai abd says, “why…why are you living in luxury while my house is in ruins?” And then God began to reveal to the people why they had been struggling so hard for these 18 years. And it was ultimately because the people had become self-absorbed and focused upon themselves and neglected God and neglected the building of God’s temple. And, so, Haggai’s telling them, “you gotta like…the priorities are wrong. Like, this is backward. We’re just repeating the same story we keep repeating. We’ve got to put God first because God has future plans.” And, so, according to Haggai, construction resumed again on September 21st 520 B.C. and in less than a month later on October 17th of that same year now that the temple is being rebuilt God reveals what He’s up to. This is what the Lord of heaven’s says, “in just a little while I will again shake the heavens and the earth, the oceans and the dryland. I’ll shake all the nations and the treasures of all the nations will be brought to this temple. I will fill this place with glory, says the Lord of heaven’s armies. The silver is mine and the gold is mine says the Lord of heaven’s armies. The future glory of this temple will be greater than its past glory, says the Lord of heaven’s armies. And in this place, I will bring peace. I, the Lord of heaven’s armies have spoken. Alright? So, that is what God intended to do with his people when he brought them back from exile, to restore them and then begin to flow the riches of the world, the very peoples that had conquered and attempted to destroy them to bring the wealth of the nations back into the temple. And there was no temple because the people were too busy seeing about their own welfare in their own lives. So, let’s make this come home. Let’s bring this a little closer. I…I have been to Jerusalem many times and there is no temple in Jerusalem. The final temple of the Lord, the one that Jesus himself would have been familiar with was destroyed in A.D. 70, by the Romans, so there is no temple there anymore. But the Scriptures…the Scriptures tell us that we are the temple of God. In other words, the glorious presence of the Lord of heaven’s armies indwells and resides inside the temple of our lives. The people in the time of Haggai had spent their energy trying to make life work on their own, but all of their efforts were yielding far less results than they were expecting because they had put their exterior lives first, ignoring the rebuilding and upkeep of the temple. Do you…do you see the parallels going on here? We are the temple. Is its in ruins because we have spent all of our efforts trying to create an exterior life that is curated and looks magical to the exterior world, but inside here inside ourselves where we live we know it’s in ruins? And are we working our butts off his heart as we know how to do and we simply are not in any way yielding the results we expected? Aor the hearers of Haggai’s message, God’s plan had always been to consolidate the prosperity of the other nations who had pillaged them, and bring it flooding back into the temple. So, if they had maintained the temple, if they had put God first then their toil for those 18 years would’ve been vastly more fruitful. Maybe that could explain a lot about things going on in our lives. Maybe the temple is in ruins. While we build and build and build and surround ourselves with stuff so that we can pretend that’s not true. And maybe this has yielded far less results than we were expecting and so we’ve confused ourselves and felt as if it’s God’s fault, that he’s withholding from us.

And then we encounter what we read in the Psalms today. “How precious are your thoughts concerning me oh God. How vast in number they are. If I try to count them there would be more of them than there are grains of sand.” That’s a lot of thoughts about you. Maybe God isn’t withholding anything from us. Maybe it’s we who are withholding from him.

Prayer:

Father, we invite You into that. As we stay in this season of longing and expectation, we consider our own hearts. It’s easy enough for us to consider the baby Jesus but You have indwelled the temple of our hearts and this is where You reside. And, so, we invite Your Holy Spirit to see what kind of place we’ve made for You to live in. Is it in ruins or are we lovingly maintaining it? Come Holy Spirit into that question today. We ask in the mighty name of Jesus. Amen.

dailyaudiobible.com is the website, it’s home base, it’s where you find out what’s going on around here.

And we’re just moving ourselves…I mean…it’s right in front of us, right? Christmas is upon us. And, so, we’ll move through this weekend and the final Sunday of Advent and then into Christmas. And it’s gonna be busy, probably for most of us, but we can choose how…how we’re gonna approach this, whether grounded and rooted or whether swept away. And I guess that’s one of the main things that we learn from the Bible is it continually gives us a path to choose. And, so, right now, my choice is to stay rooted and grounded knowing that they’ll be challenges to that but deciding ahead of time helps an awful lot. So, that’s kind of where I’m at and maybe…maybe you’re thinking about the same kinds of things because here we are. And one of the things that I find to be really grounding around the Christmas season is our…is our annual Christmas party and we’re putting that together…together now to come out to release sometime between now and Monday. So, be on the lookout for that and it will just…wherever it is that you listen to the Daily Audio Bible, it’ll just show up as an episode. So, just watch for that. Putting the final…final touches on it. So, keep an eye out for it.

Community Prayer and Praise:

Father God, thank You so much for this new day, for this new opportunity we have to serve You where we are. Thank You, Lord so much for where You have placed us. Thank You for the village, town, or city that we are in. Thank You for the country that we are in. Thank You for the people that we interact with day by day. Help us Lord to please be a shining light and a good ambassador for You. Lord, thank You for the opportunity the British people had yesterday to vote for who they wanted to represent them in parliament. Father God, thank You for the 650 people who have been voted into the British Parliament. I pray Lord that they would be good role models for us all. I pray Lord that each of them will be looking to work together for the good of the British people. And Lord, probably most importantly and I should’ve said at first, I pray that they would come to know and love You as Lord and Savior because that is what is most important, their salvation. Father God, thank You so much for my brothers, our brothers and sisters who have been elected into the British Parliament and I pray Lord that they would be shining lights where they are. Thank You so much for this opportunity that these 650 people have to serve the British people for the next five or so years. May You be at work Lord Jesus holy and precious name. Amen. Hi guys, Michaela from Gloucester. Please be praying from unity in the UK. There are a lot of disappointed and disillusioned people but there also a lot of happy people. Please continue to pray for us. Thanks. Bye.

This is Rachel from Pennsylvania. Dear God, I want to pray for those that are bipolar and who struggle with knowing when they are off and need to make adjustments. I want to pray for Matt’s cousin Diane who is bipolar and did something and ended up arrested and then charges were dropped because of her condition, is now in an institution. And I just pray for her recovery and that you will move in her and you will use Matt to witness to her and to help change her life. I also want to pray for the boy with bipolar syndrome who wanted to be with Jesus and stabbed himself and is now in an institution. Lord, just be with him, heal him, and just help him to stabilize so that he can function and…and be with You by understanding that You’re with him, always in him, and, you know, that he can walk with You here on earth before he meets You in heaven. And I also want to pray for Standing Firm in South Carolina whose I think wife may be bipolar. I want to thank You that you are straightening things out there. I don’t know details, but you called in with a praise report. So, thank You God for that. And will continue to pray for him. And I also want to pray for my dad to just keep him stabilized as well. Amen.

Hello Daily Audio Bible community my name is Jimmy I’m calling from Connecticut. I’ve been with the Daily Audio Bible since the second year. Been going through a lot ever since then. Been through a very long separation and divorce. Had a lot of depression since my brother passed away last year. And lately, I just lost my job. I am now in my home that I bought for my family by myself and trying to financially get back on my feet. I’ve been praying nonstop for the past couple years. It’s been hard because I’ve been doing the work of the Lord, praying for people and it seems like personally I am just not making it. So, asking for prayer in my finances that I will find a good job. I was in my job for 13 years and let go for doing the right thing. Also, prayer for my daughter who’s being baptized, seven and wanted to be baptized, which is an amazing thing. But I am thankful for Brian and your family for all these years that it’s been a staple in my life. So, yeah, thank you.

Hey Daily Audio Bible to Be a Blessing in California. Just wanted to let you know it’s wonderful to always hear the community connecting and even though I haven’t been calling in for a while it’s just, you know, sometimes there are those moments when we just don’t call, and we really should. So, here I am. I…it’s been a challenging time with work and my health and the season and knowing that there are people that I miss. I know that there are those of you who are experiencing similar situations with relationship issues and lost loved ones who have passed away or jobs that have gone away or just…it’s a hard time. So, know that I am praying for you. Ask that you would pray for me also. There’s a man in the hospital, Anthony, is in need of a lung transplant. So, if you would keep him in prayer and his family. He’s been needing it for a while, and this is just a really trying time. Ms. Johnson had a mini stroke and is it in acute rehab. So, they believe she’ll be able to get back home but needs to have intensive care rehab. So, please keep her in prayer. Lastly, there will be a blue Christmas service that I will be participating in, leading on the 21st and really ask for your prayerful support for those who will be a part of the service, that they will be healthy, for those who will be coming that they will receive the love of Jesus in so many ways and just for how the service will be organized. Really appreciate that support. God bless you all. Bye-bye.

This is Pam and Dallas and I just wanted to reach out to the man who reached out about his wife, the registered nurse who has been ill and is discouraged and with a child who has cerebral palsy. Just praying for your whole family. That’s a tough situation to be in and just want you to know that you’re being prayed for. Bye.

This is TM from Botswana. Candace from Oregon, thank you so much for the prayer for you say has been attributed to Francis of Assisi which you prayed for us today on the 13th of December. This is the one that says, “God let me be an instrument of thy peace.” This prayer was exactly what I needed to hear with all the small challenges I am currently experiencing with various aspects of my life and relationships. I started listening to DAB this year in February and this is the first time that I have called. I thank God so much for leading me to DAB, which I have found quite coincidently it seems but which must be God’s answer to my prayer a year ago when I asked him to help me read and understand the Bible and for him to reveal himself to me through the Scriptures. Thank you, Brian and the entire DAB community for all that you do to guide us through the word of God and for your commentary which unravels the Scriptures so aptly and in a way that speaks so directly to our individual experiences. I am so glad to be part of this community and look forward to beginning next year’s listening right from the first day of the year and to experience a repeat of the journey through the Bible. And, Rebecca from Michigan, thank you for your prayer for all the children and for reminding us to raise our children in the way of God. I was very blessed by that teaching. I thank you all DABbers.

Good day, it’s Kelly from Australia. How are you all going? I’m calling today to ask if you’d keep our country Australia in your prayers over this festive season. We are experiencing severe drought right now as well as devastating bushfires that are ravaging our country, destroying our properties, livestock, and wildlife. Scorching hot temperatures are forecasted for the coming weeks and not a drop of rain is insight. Our firefighters will be working tirelessly over the festive season. The Bush fire smoke is as thick as fog, our rivers and dams have dried up, and farmers crops have not been sown or harvested. Even if farmers have the money to feed their livestock, which some don’t, the feed now is scarcely available. And what’s gonna happen in the coming months and years from this drought and bushfires is unimaginable. So, I’m just wondering, could you please keep our great southland in your prayers? We desperately need rain. We desperately need relief from this drought in bushfires. It has reached proportions that I don’t…I just don’t know what’s in store for us. Thank you and have a great day. Bye.

Haggai 1-2

A Call to Rebuild the Lord’s House

On the first day of the sixth month in Darius’ second year as king, the Lord spoke his word through the prophet Haggai to Zerubbabel (who was the son of Shealtiel and was governor of Judah) and to the chief priest Joshua (who was the son of Jehozadak). He said, “This is what the Lord of Armies says: These people say it’s not the right time to rebuild the house of the Lord.”

Then the Lord spoke his word through the prophet Haggai. He said, “Is it time for you to live in your paneled houses while this house lies in ruins? Now, this is what the Lord of Armies says: Carefully consider your ways! You planted a lot, but you harvested little. You eat, but you’re never full. You drink, but you’re still thirsty.[a] You wear clothing, but you never have enough to keep you warm. You spend money as fast as you earn it. This is what the Lord of Armies says: Carefully consider your ways!

“Go to the mountains, get lumber, and build the house. I will be pleased with it, and I will be honored,” declares the Lord.

“You expected a lot, but you received a little. When you bring something home, I blow it away. Why?” declares the Lord of Armies. “It’s because my house lies in ruins while each of you is busy working on your own house. 10 It is because of you that the sky has withheld its dew and the earth has withheld its produce. 11 I called for a drought on the land, the hills, and on the grain, the new wine, the olive oil, and whatever the ground produces, on humans and animals, and on all your hard work.”

The Work on the House Resumes

12 Then Zerubbabel (who was the son of Shealtiel), the chief priest Joshua (who was the son of Jehozadak), and the faithful few who returned from Babylon obeyed the Lord their God. They also obeyed the words of the prophet Haggai because the Lord their God had sent him and because the people feared the Lord.

13 Then Haggai, the messenger of the Lord who had received the Lord’s message, said to the people, “I am with you, declares the Lord.”

14 The Lord inspired them to rebuild his house. So Zerubbabel (who was the son of Shealtiel and was governor of Judah), the chief priest Joshua (who was the son of Jehozadak), and the faithful few who returned from Babylon began working on the house of the Lord of Armies, their God. 15 They began on the twenty-fourth day of the sixth month in Darius’ second year as king.

The New House Will Be Greater Than the Old One

On the twenty-first day of the seventh month, the Lord spoke his word through the prophet Haggai. He said, “Now, speak to Zerubbabel (who is the son of Shealtiel and is governor of Judah), the chief priest Joshua (who is the son of Jehozadak), and the faithful few who returned from Babylon. Ask them, ‘Is there anyone among the faithful few who saw this house in its former glory? How does it look to you now? Doesn’t it seem like nothing to you?’

“But now, Zerubbabel, be strong,” declares the Lord. “Chief Priest Joshua (son of Jehozadak), be strong. Everyone in the land, be strong,” declares the Lord. “Work, because I am with you,” declares the Lord of Armies. “This is the promise I made to you when you came out of Egypt. My Spirit remains with you. Don’t be afraid.

“This is what the Lord of Armies says: Once again, in a little while,[b] I am going to shake the sky and the earth, the sea and the dry land. I will shake all the nations, and the one whom all the nations desire will come. Then I will fill this house with glory, says the Lord of Armies. The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, declares the Lord of Armies. This new house will be more glorious than the former, declares the Lord of Armies. And in this place I will give them peace, declares the Lord of Armies.”

Though the People Are Sinful, the Lord Will Bless Them

10 On the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month in Darius’ second year as king, the Lord spoke his word to the prophet Haggai. He said, 11 “This is what the Lord of Armies says: Ask the priests for a decision. 12 Suppose a person carries meat set aside for a holy purpose and he folds it up in his clothes. If his clothes touch bread, boiled food, wine, oil, or any kind of food, does that make the food holy?”

The priests answered, “No.”

13 Haggai asked, “Suppose a person becomes unclean[c] by touching a corpse. If he touches any of these things, does that make them unclean?”

The priests answered, “That makes them unclean.”

14 Then Haggai answered, “In the same way, I have decided that these people are unclean, and so is this nation, declares the Lord. So is everything they do. Whatever offering they bring is unclean.

15 “And from now on, carefully consider this. Consider how things were before one stone was laid on another in the temple of the Lord. 16 When anyone came to a pile of grain to get 20 measures, there would be only 10. And when anyone came to a wine vat to draw out 50 measures, there would be only 20 in it. 17 I infested all your work with blight and mildew and struck it with hail. But you didn’t come back to me, declares the Lord. 18 Carefully consider from now on, from the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, from the day when the foundation of the house of the Lord was laid. Carefully consider: 19 Is there any seed left in the barn? The vine, the fig tree, the pomegranate, and the olive tree still haven’t produced. But from now on I will bless you.”

A Promise to Zerubbabel

20 The Lord spoke his word to Haggai a second time on the twenty-fourth day of the month. He said, 21 “Say to Zerubbabel (governor of Judah), ‘I am going to shake the heavens and the earth. 22 I will overthrow the thrones of kingdoms and destroy the power of nations. I will overthrow chariots and their riders, and the horses will fall along with their riders. They will kill one another with swords. 23 On that day, declares the Lord of Armies, I will take you, my servant Zerubbabel (son of Shealtiel), declares the Lord. I will make you like a signet ring, because I have chosen you, declares the Lord of Armies.’”

Footnotes:

  1. Haggai 1:6 Or “You have wine to drink but not enough to become drunk.”
  2. Haggai 2:6 Hebrew meaning uncertain.
  3. Haggai 2:13 “Unclean” refers to anything that Moses’ Teachings say is not presentable to God.

Revelation 11

God’s Two Witnesses

11 Then I was given a stick like a measuring stick. I was told, “Stand up and measure the temple of God and the altar. Count those who worship there. But do not measure the temple courtyard. Leave that out, because it is given to the nations, and they will trample the holy city for 42 months. I will allow my two witnesses who wear sackcloth to speak what God has revealed. They will speak for 1,260 days.”

These witnesses are the two olive trees and the two lamp stands standing in the presence of the Lord of the earth. If anyone wants to hurt them, fire comes out of the witnesses’ mouths and burns up their enemies. If anyone wants to hurt them, he must be killed the same way. These witnesses have authority to shut the sky in order to keep rain from falling during the time they speak what God has revealed. They have authority to turn water into blood and to strike the earth with any plague as often as they want.

When the witnesses finish their testimony, the beast which comes from the bottomless pit will fight them, conquer them, and kill them. Their dead bodies will lie on the street of the important city where their Lord was crucified. The spiritual names of that city are Sodom and Egypt. For 3½ days some members of the people, tribes, languages, and nations will look at the witnesses’ dead bodies and will not allow anyone to bury them. 10 Those living on earth will gloat over the witnesses’ death. They will celebrate and send gifts to each other because these two prophets had tormented those living on earth.

11 After 3½ days the breath of life from God entered the two witnesses, and they stood on their feet. Great fear fell on those who watched them. 12 The witnesses heard a loud voice from heaven calling to them, “Come up here.” They went up to heaven in a cloud, and their enemies watched them. 13 At that moment a powerful earthquake struck. One-tenth of the city collapsed, 7,000 people were killed by the earthquake, and the rest were terrified. They gave glory to the God of heaven.

14 The second catastrophe is over. The third catastrophe will soon be here.

15 When the seventh angel blew his trumpet, there were loud voices in heaven, saying,

“The kingdom of the world has become
the kingdom of our Lord and of his Messiah,
and he will rule as king forever and ever.”

16 Then the 24 leaders, who were sitting on their thrones in God’s presence, immediately bowed, worshiped God, 17 and said,

“We give thanks to you, Lord God Almighty,
who is and who was,
because you have taken your great power
and have begun ruling as king.
18 “The nations were angry, but your anger has come.
The time has come for the dead to be judged:
to reward your servants, the prophets,
your holy people,
and those who fear your name,
no matter if they are important or unimportant,
and to destroy those who destroy the earth.”

19 God’s temple in heaven was opened, and the ark of his promise was seen inside his temple. There was lightning, noise, thunder, an earthquake, and heavy hail.

Psalm 139

O Lord, you have examined me, and you know me.
You alone know when I sit down and when I get up.
You read my thoughts from far away.
You watch me when I travel and when I rest.
You are familiar with all my ways.
Even before there is a single word on my tongue,
you know all about it, Lord.
You are all around me—in front of me and in back of me.
You lay your hand on me.
Such knowledge is beyond my grasp.
It is so high I cannot reach it.

Where can I go to get away from your Spirit?
Where can I run to get away from you?
If I go up to heaven, you are there.
If I make my bed in hell, you are there.
If I climb upward on the rays of the morning sun
or land on the most distant shore of the sea where the sun sets,
10 even there your hand would guide me
and your right hand would hold on to me.
11 If I say, “Let the darkness hide me
and let the light around me turn into night,”
12 even the darkness is not too dark for you.
Night is as bright as day.
Darkness and light are the same to you.

13 You alone created my inner being.
You knitted me together inside my mother.
14 I will give thanks to you
because I have been so amazingly and miraculously made.
Your works are miraculous, and my soul is fully aware of this.
15 My bones were not hidden from you
when I was being made in secret,
when I was being skillfully woven in an underground workshop.
16 Your eyes saw me when I was still an unborn child.
Every day of my life was recorded in your book
before one of them had taken place.
17 How precious are your thoughts concerning me, O God!
How vast in number they are!
18 If I try to count them,
there would be more of them than there are grains of sand.
When I wake up, I am still with you.

19 I wish that you would kill wicked people, O God,
and that bloodthirsty people would leave me alone.
20 They say wicked things about you.
Your enemies misuse your name.
21 Shouldn’t I hate those who hate you, O Lord?
Shouldn’t I be disgusted with those who attack you?
22 I hate them with all my heart.
They have become my enemies.

23 Examine me, O God, and know my mind.
Test me, and know my thoughts.
24 See whether I am on an evil path.
Then lead me on the everlasting path.

Proverbs 30:15-16

Human Bloodsuckers

15 The bloodsucking leech has two daughters—“Give!” and “Give!”

Four Things That Are Never Satisfied

Three things are never satisfied.
Four never say, “Enough!”:
16 the grave,
a barren womb,
a land that never gets enough water,
a fire that does not say, “Enough!”

Today is the 19th day of December. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian. It is great to be here with you today as we as we come around this Global Campfire, come in out of all the festivities and all of the activities and…and even out of all the chaos that can be this time of year and just take our place around this warm fire that’s glowing in this oasis, this place and we can step away from it all for just a few minutes and allow God to reorient us so that we go back out into the world with our perspective rearranged. So, it is great to be here with you for that next step and we kinda have a little tradition as we move through December of moving quickly through all a lot of books, like reading entire books of the Bible in a single sitting, especially as we move to the minor prophets in the Old Testament. And, so, today is no different. we’ll read an entire book. It’s called Zephaniah

Introduction to the book of Zephaniah:

It’s the ninth of the minor prophets and as with the other minor prophets, we don’t know much about Zephaniah. The book itself gives us the most substantial information that we have and that’s in the first verse, “the Lord gave this message to Zephaniah when Josiah, son of Oman was king of Judah. Zephaniah was the son of Cushi, the grandson of Gedaliah, and the great-grandson of Amariah, son of Hezekia. So, what’s interesting about that description is that Zephaniah traced his ancestry four generations back instead of just naming his father, which would be customary. So, it’s not sure but that maybe because Zephaniah was a descendent of…of the godly and reforming King Hezekiah. And if that was the case, that would explain how it is that Zephaniah is so aware of the world that’s surrounding him as he speaks in this book. And if he was a descendent of a King, of King Hezekiah, then obviously his writing would’ve been given credibility and would’ve been paid attention. Zephaniah’s name means God has hidden. And he says that he received this message during the reign of Josiah. And that would put him in the early to mid-600s B.C. which would put him in the same time period as other prophets like Jeremiah. Many biblical scholars believe that Zephaniah, because of the writing style, was familiar with the writings of…of other prophets like Isaiah because the language and the tone is similar. Many of the prophecies that we have been reading, they’re targeted specifically at certain people and certain groups, whereas Zephaniah seems to…seems to be offering a prophetic work that talks about the judgment of the entire known world, which included Judah. And Zephaniah was…was sharing that God’s judgment, His judgment on evil was eminent and he describes that as the day of the Lord, which is…which is central in this book. So, Zephaniah’s warning of the day of the Lord and encouraging a response and that response his repentance before it’s too late. And this idea…I mean…and we’re kinda getting some of this imagery in Revelation as well. This idea of the day of the Lord of this ultimate judgment can certainly breed hysteria, can certainly evoke all kinds of ominous imagery of the kind of devastation upon the earth that we can’t even imagine. So, it can make us fearful. It can make us dread the future. But we need to remember what God was after. What God is ultimately doing here is eradicating evil not eradicating people. But that requires collaboration. Anyone that wasn’t willing to rid themselves of evil would be swept away no matter where they came from or no matter what claim they had, but certain people would survive, certain people would live through it, people who embodied a specific posture. And Zephaniah’s speaks of that, “those who are left will be the lowly and humble. It’s they who trust in the name of the Lord.” So, we’ve read enough prophetic work, prophetic writings in the Scriptures to kinda understand that there…there is an arc to them, there is a prophetic utterance of judgment but that also brings the heralding of a new beginning, a pure new beginning and Zephaniah’s no different. So, judgment is foretold, but restoration is foretold and that’s almost across-the-board in prophecy. I mean, we lose sight of that pretty quickly, often because we get lost in…in the foretelling of judgment, but there is also the foretelling of restoration. So, let’s find comfort in that as we read in its entirety the book of Zephaniah which contains three chapters. And we’re reading from the God’s Word Translation this week.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word. We thank You for another day in the rhythm of life that is each and every day in Your word as we move through a year. So, we thank You that on this day we were able to encounter an entire book, Zephaniah. And we thank You Father that, although yes, we can read of the ominousness, we also see that there are…there are always alternative paths, it doesn’t have to go that way. And this is so true of our own lives. It doesn’t have to go that way. There is an alternative path a narrow one, the one that leaves…leads to life. And we have been asking all year for You to lead us on that path and we thank You for Your faithfulness to us. And, so, as we and our time today, Father, Psalm 138 say what we need to say. And, so, we pray this together. We give thanks to You Father with all our hearts. We’ll make music to praise You in front of the all God’s. We will bow toward You. We will give thanks to Your name because of Your mercy and truth. You have made Your name and Your promise greater than everything. When we called You answered us, You made us bold by strengthening our souls. All the kings of the earth will give thanks to You, oh Lord, because they have heard the promises You spoke. They will sing this about the ways of the Lord, the Lords honor is great. Even though You are high above us Lord, You see the humble close-up, and You recognize arrogant people from a distance. Even though we walk into the middle of trouble You guard our lives against the anger of our enemies. You stretch out Your hand and Your right hand saves us. You will do everything for us. Lord, Your mercy endures forever. Do not let go of what Your hands have made. And Father we reach for You with that assurance and we go into this day with that confidence. Come Holy Spirit we pray, in the name of Jesus we ask. Amen.

Zephaniah 1-3

Zephaniah’s Prophecy

This is the word that the Lord spoke to Zephaniah, who was the son of Cushi, the grandson of Gedaliah, and the great-grandson of Amariah, son of Hezekiah. The Lord spoke his word in the days of Judah’s King Josiah, son of Amon.

The Lord Will Judge the Earth

“I will gather everything on the face of the earth
and put an end to it,” declares the Lord.
“I will put an end to humans and animals.
I will put an end to
the birds in the sky,
the fish in the sea,
and the sins that make people fall, together with the sinners.
I will remove all people from the face of the earth,” declares the Lord.

The Lord Will Judge Judah

“I will use my power against Judah
and against those who live in Jerusalem.
I will remove the faithful few of Baal from this place
and the names of the pagan priests along with my priests.
I will remove those who worship all the stars in the sky on their rooftops
and those who worship by swearing loyalty to the Lord
while also swearing loyalty to the god Milcom.[a]
I will remove those who have turned away from following the Lord
and those who no longer seek the Lord or ask him for help.”

Be silent in the presence of the Almighty Lord,
because the day of the Lord is near.
The Lord has prepared a sacrifice.
He has invited his special guests.

“On the day of the Lord’s sacrifice I will punish the officials,
the king’s sons, and all who dress in foreign clothing.[b]
On that day I will punish all who jump over the doorway
and all who fill their master’s house with violence and deception.
10 On that day a loud cry will come from Fish Gate,
a howling from the Second Part of the city,
and a loud crashing sound from the hills,” declares the Lord.
11 “Howl, inhabitants of the Mortar,[c]
because all the merchants will be destroyed
and all who handle money will be killed.

12 “At that time I will search Jerusalem with lamps and punish those
who are satisfied with their hardened lifestyle,
who think that the Lord won’t do anything—good or bad.
13 Their wealth will be looted.
Their homes will be demolished.
They will build houses, but they won’t live in them.
They will plant vineyards, but they won’t drink their wine.”

The Day of the Lord

14 The frightening day of the Lord is near.
It is near and coming very quickly.
Listen! Warriors will cry out bitterly on the day of the Lord.
15 That day will be a day of overflowing fury,
a day of trouble and distress,
a day of devastation and desolation,
a day of darkness and gloom,
a day of clouds and overcast skies,
16 a day of rams’ horns and battle cries
against the fortified cities
and against the high corner towers.
17 “I will bring such distress on humans that they will walk like they are blind,
because they have sinned against the Lord.”
Their blood will be poured out like dust
and their intestines like manure.
18 Their silver and their gold will not be able to rescue them
on the day of the Lord’s overflowing fury.
The whole earth will be consumed by his fiery anger,
because he will put an end, a frightening end,
to those who live on earth.

A Call for Judah to Turn Away from Sin

Gather yourselves together!
Yes, gather together, you shameless nation,
before the decree is carried out
and the day passes like windblown husks,
before the Lord’s burning anger comes to you,
before the day of the Lord’s anger comes to you.
Search for the Lord, all you humble people in the land
who carry out his justice.
Search for what is right.
Search for humility.
Maybe you will find shelter on the day of the Lord’s anger.

The Lord Will Judge His People’s Enemies

Gaza will be deserted,
and Ashkelon will be destroyed.
Ashdod will be driven out at noon,
and Ekron will be torn out by the roots.
How horrible it will be for those who live on the seacoast,
for the nation from Crete.
The Lord’s word is against you, Canaan, the land of the Philistines:
“I will destroy you so that no one will be living there.”
The seacoast will become pastureland
with meadows for shepherds
and fenced-off places for sheep.
The coast will belong to the faithful few from the nation of Judah.
There they will graze their sheep.
In the evening they will lie down in the houses of Ashkelon.
The Lord their God will take care of them
and will restore their fortunes.

“I have heard the insults from Moab and the mockery from Ammon.
They insulted my people and bragged about their territory.
Therefore, I solemnly swear, as I live,”
declares the Lord of Armies, the God of Israel,
“Moab will become like Sodom, and Ammon will become like Gomorrah:
a place of weeds, salt pits, and ruins forever.
The faithful few of my people will loot them,
and those who are left in my nation will take possession of them.”

10 This is what they will get for their sinful pride,
because they insulted the people who belong to the Lord of Armies
and made themselves greater than them.
11 The Lord will terrify them,
because he will make all the gods of the earth waste away.
So every person from every coast and nation will bow to him.

12 “Even you, the people from Sudan,
you will also die by my sword.”

13 The Lord will use his power against the north and destroy Assyria.
He will turn Nineveh into a deserted ruin,
a dried up wasteland like the desert.
14 Flocks will lie down in it along with animals of every kind.
Even pelicans and herons will nest on top of its columns.
Listen! A bird will sing in a window.
The doorway will be in ruins,
because the Lord will expose the cedar beams.
15 Is this the arrogant city?
Is this the city that used to live securely,
the city that used to think to itself,
“I’m the only one, and no one else exists but me”?
What a wasteland it is now, a resting place for wild animals!
All who pass by it will hiss and make an obscene gesture.

Jerusalem Will Be Destroyed

How horrible it will be for that rebellious
and corrupt place, the city of violence.
It obeys no one.
It does not accept correction.
It does not trust the Lord.
It does not draw close to its God.
Its officials are like roaring lions.
Its judges are like wolves in the evening.
They leave nothing to gnaw on for the morning.
Its prophets are reckless and unfaithful.
Its priests contaminate what is holy.
They violate the teachings.
The righteous Lord is in that city.
He does no wrong.
He brings his judgment to light every morning.
He does not fail.
But those who are perverted are shameless.

“I will cut off the nations.
Their towers will be destroyed.
I will demolish their streets.
No one will walk through them.
Their cities will be completely destroyed.
Not a single person will be left.
No one will be living there.
I said to my people,
‘You will fear me.
You will accept correction!’
Then their homeland would not be wiped out
even though I have punished them.
Still, they continued to be corrupt in everything they did.”
The Lord declares, “Just wait!
One day I will stand up as a witness.
I have decided to gather nations,
to bring kingdoms together,
and to pour my rage, my burning anger, on them.
The whole land will be consumed by my fiery fury.

Israel Will Turn Away from Sin

“Then I will give all people pure lips
to worship the Lord
and to serve him with one purpose.
10 From beyond the rivers of Sudan
my worshipers, my scattered people, will bring my offering.
11 On that day you will no longer be ashamed
of all your rebellious acts against me.
Then I will remove your arrogance
and never again will you act proud on my holy mountain.
12 So with you I will leave a faithful few, a humble and poor people.
They will seek refuge in the name of the Lord.
13 The faithful few in Israel will not do wrong, tell lies,
or use their tongues to deceive others.
They will graze their sheep and lie down,
and there will be no one to terrify them.”

Israel’s Joyful Song

14 Sing happily, people of Zion!
Shout loudly, Israel!
Celebrate and rejoice with all your heart, people of Jerusalem.
15 The Lord has reversed the judgments against you.
He has forced out your enemies.
The king of Israel, the Lord, is with you.
You will never fear disaster again.
16 On that day Jerusalem will be told,
“Do not be afraid, Zion!
Do not lose courage!”
17 The Lord your God is with you.
He is a hero who saves you.
He happily rejoices over you,
renews you with his love,
and celebrates over you with shouts of joy.

Israel Will Return Home

18 “I will gather those among you who are troubled because of the festivals.
They bear a burden of disgrace.
19 At that time
I will deal with all who have overpowered you.
I will rescue those who are lame.
I will gather those who have been scattered.
I will make them praised and famous in all the world,
though they had been ashamed.
20 At that time I will bring you home.
Yes, at that time I will gather you together.
I will make you famous and praised among all the people of the earth
when I restore your fortunes right before your eyes,” says the Lord.

Revelation 10

John Eats a Small Scroll

10 I saw another powerful angel come down from heaven. He was dressed in a cloud, and there was a rainbow over his head. His face was like the sun, and his feet were like columns of fire. He held a small, opened scroll in his hand. He set his right foot on the sea and his left on the land. Then he shouted in a loud voice as a lion roars. When he shouted, the seven thunders spoke with voices of their own. When the seven thunders spoke, I was going to write it down. I heard a voice from heaven say, “Seal up what the seven thunders have said, and don’t write it down.”

The angel whom I saw standing on the sea and on the land raised his right hand to heaven. He swore an oath by the one who lives forever and ever, who created heaven and everything in it, the earth and everything in it, and the sea and everything in it. He said, “There will be no more delay. In the days when the seventh angel is ready to blow his trumpet, the mystery of God will be completed, as he had made this Good News known to his servants, the prophets.” The voice which I had heard from heaven spoke to me again. It said, “Take the opened scroll from the hand of the angel who is standing on the sea and on the land.” I went to the angel and asked him to give me the small scroll. He said to me, “Take it and eat it. It will be bitter in your stomach, but it will be as sweet as honey in your mouth.”

10 I took the small scroll from the angel’s hand and ate it. It was as sweet as honey in my mouth, but when I had eaten it, it was bitter in my stomach. 11 The seven thunders told me, “Again you must speak what God has revealed in front of many people, nations, languages, and kings.”

Psalm 138

I will give thanks to you with all my heart.
I will make music to praise you in front of the false gods.
I will bow toward your holy temple.
I will give thanks to your name because of your mercy and truth.
You have made your name and your promise greater than everything.

When I called, you answered me.
You made me bold by strengthening my soul.[a]
All the kings of the earth will give thanks to you, O Lord,
because they have heard the promises you spoke.
They will sing this about the ways of the Lord:
“The Lord’s honor is great!”
Even though the Lord is high above, he sees humble people close up,
and he recognizes arrogant people from a distance.

Even though I walk into the middle of trouble,
you guard my life against the anger of my enemies.
You stretch out your hand,
and your right hand saves me.
The Lord will do everything for me.
O Lord, your mercy endures forever.
Do not let go of what your hands have made.

Four Kinds of People

11 A certain kind of person curses his father
and does not bless his mother.
12 A certain kind of person thinks he is pure
but is not washed from his own feces.[a]
13 A certain kind of person looks around arrogantly

Habakkuk 1:1-3:19, Revelation 9:1-21, Psalms 137:1-9, Proverbs 30:10

Today is the 18th day of December. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian. It is great to be here with you as we continue our journey through this final month of the year. And the final month of the year is full of color in the Bible because we cover so much different territory. And today is no different. We will be diving into the Old Testament portion of our reading and as we do, we’ll be reading in its entirety the book of Habakkuk, which is the eighth book in the grouping of prophetic writings that are known as the minor prophets.

Introduction to the book of Habakkuk:

Now, Habakkuk is a bit of a mystery. Like there’s probably less known about Habakkuk than any other writer in the Bible. There…there’s a Jewish tradition that speaks of Habakkuk as being the son of this Shunamite woman who was resurrected through the ministry of Elisha. And that story we found in the book of second Kings and there’s another tradition that’s in the apocryphal book called Bell and the Dragon and that depicts Habakkuk ministering to Daniel well he’s in the lion’s den. And these are traditions. And when scholars examine these traditions, especially this last one about Daniel in the lion’s den. Well, you know, usually they consider them to be stuff of legend. So, even though we’re pretty unsure about Habakkuk and his history, there’s many verses in Habakkuk that are very well known, like this one, “the righteous will live by their faithfulness to God”, right? That should sound very familiar because Paul repeats that sentiment over and over in his letters. And it should sound familiar from the book of Hebrews. This is a core doctrine in the Christian faith. And because Habakkuk reads kind of poetic and has a lyrical form to it, especially as it closes out with a Psalm or a hymn, some scholars have looked at Habakkuk and considered maybe he was a temple musician. But Habakkuk is interesting because it contains inside of it a conversation that is a pretty direct conversation between the prophet Habakkuk and…and God. And the conversation moves from doubt into a place of worship. Habakkuk is just talking to God and saying out loud what he’s seeing. Like, everybody’s fighting, there’s no justice, there’s more wicked people then there are righteous, and justice is perverted. So, Habakkuk’s saying all this to God because he wants to understand how it is that God’s letting the evil, like every conceivable evil happen like…like He’s not even paying attention, like He’s not even aware of it. And God responds to Habakkuk that the Babylonians are going to come punish His people, which sort of like exacerbated the problem for Habakkuk because he’s like, “you are going to let even more evil people come here to…to punish the evil of your own people?” In other words, “you gonna let even more evil people than us come and punish our evil. And God begins to give Habakkuk like a…a larger perspective that the Babylonians would come and punish His people, but they would not be unpunished. In fact, their ultimate destiny would be complete destruction. So, it began to dawn on Habakkuk that God is not indifferent, He’s not unaware, that He’s not uninterested, but He is in fact working in the world and He is in fact just and true, which ultimately leads Habakkuk into…into a hymn of worship and give us language, words of faith and trust that are beyond what we can currently see as a set of circumstances that come and go every single day. And, so, with that we’re reading from the God’s Word Translation this week and we will read in its entirety the book of Habakkuk, which contains three chapters.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word, we thank You for another day in the rhythm of life that allows Your word to wash into our hearts and minds and to guide us in our lives as You penetrate into every aspect of who we are and we open ourselves to that fully and we declare along with Habakkuk, “we will be happy with You, Lord. We will truly find joy in You God. You save us. You Lord, God Almighty are our strength. You make our feet like those of the deer and make us walk on the mountains.” So, Father, it would be easy to say amen and invite You to go into our day, but that’s backwards. Father, lead us into this day and may we follow where You are leading so that we participate in a day that collaborates with You in revealing Your kingdom in this world, especially in this season where the entire world is…is being marketed to and we’re distracted in every way possible but the world takes note that we are commemorating the arrival of the Savior. So, come Holy Spirit, may our lives be a beacon pointing to the way, the truth, and the life. We pray this in the name of Jesus our Savior. Amen.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Wednesday December 18, 2019 (NIV)

Habakkuk 1-3

Habakkuk’s Vision

The divine revelation that the prophet Habakkuk saw.

Habakkuk’s Question

How long, O Lord, am I to cry for help,
but you will not listen?
I cry out to you, “There’s violence!”
yet you will not come to the rescue.
Why do you make me see wrongdoing?
And why do you watch wickedness?
Destruction and violence are in front of me.
Quarrels and disputes arise.
That is why your teaching is numbed,
and justice is never carried out.
Wicked people surround righteous people
so that when justice is carried out, it’s perverted.

The Lord’s Answer

Look among the nations and watch.
Be amazed and astonished.
I am going to do something in your days
that you would not believe even if it were reported to you.
I am going to send the Babylonians,
that fierce and reckless nation.
They will march throughout the earth
to take possession of lands that don’t belong to them.
They will be terrifying and fearsome.
They will carry out their own kind of justice and honor.
Their horses will be faster than leopards
and quicker than wolves in the evening.
Their riders will gallop along proudly.
Their riders will come from far away.
They will fly like an eagle that swoops down for its prey.
They will all come for violence.
Every face will be directed forward.
They will gather prisoners like sand.
10 They will make fun of kings and treat rulers as a joke.
They will laugh at every fortified city
and build a dirt ramp to capture it.
11 They will move quickly and pass through like the wind.
So they will be guilty,
because their own strength is their god.

Habakkuk’s Question

12 Didn’t you exist before time began, O Lord, my God, my Holy One?
We will not die!
O Lord, you have appointed the Babylonians to bring judgment.
O Rock, you have destined them to correct us.
13 Your eyes are too pure to look at evil.
You can’t watch wickedness.
Why do you keep watching treacherous people?
Why are you silent when wicked people swallow those
who are more righteous than they are?
14 You make all people like the fish in the sea,
like schools of sea life that have no ruler.
15 The Babylonians pull them all up with fishhooks,
drag them away in nets,
and gather them in dragnets.
So they rejoice and are happy.
16 That is why they sacrifice to their nets and burn incense to their dragnets.
They are rich and well fed because of them.
17 Will they keep on emptying their nets
and always kill nations without mercy?

Habakkuk Waits for the Lord’s Answer

I will stand at my guard post.
I will station myself on the wall.
I will watch to see what he will say to me
and what answer I will get to my complaint.

The Lord’s Answer

Then the Lord answered me,
“Write the vision.
Make it clear on tablets
so that anyone can read it quickly.
The vision will still happen at the appointed time.
It hurries toward its goal.
It won’t be a lie.
If it’s delayed, wait for it.
It will certainly happen.
It won’t be late.

“Look at the proud person. He is not right in himself.
But the righteous person will live because of his faithfulness.[a]
Also because wine is treacherous
he is arrogant and never rests.
He has a large appetite like the grave.
He is like death—never satisfied.
He gathers all the nations to himself.
He collects all the people to himself.
Won’t all of them ridicule him,
directing clever sayings and riddles at him, like:

“‘How horrible it will be for the one who makes himself rich
with what is not his own
and makes himself wealthy on loans.
How long will this go on?’
Won’t your creditors suddenly rise up
and those who are going to shake you wake up?
Then you will become their prize.
You have looted many nations.
All the rest of the people will loot you
because of the slaughter and violence done
to lands, cities, and all their inhabitants.

“‘How horrible it will be for the one who uses violence
to get things for his own household
in order to set his nest up high
and save himself from disaster.’
10 You have planned disgrace for your household
by cutting off many people and forfeiting your own life.
11 A stone in the wall will cry out.
A beam in the roof will answer it.

12 “‘How horrible it will be for the one who builds a city by slaughter
and founds a town by crime.’
13 Isn’t it from the Lord of Armies
that people grow tired only to feed the flames
and nations exhaust themselves for nothing?
14 But the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the Lord’s glory
like the water covers the sea.

15 “‘How horrible it will be for the one who makes his neighbor drink
from the bowl of God’s rage,
making him drunk in order to stare at his nakedness.’
16 You are filled with disgrace rather than glory.
Drink! Yes you! And expose yourself as godless.
The cup in the Lord’s right hand will come around to you,
and disgrace will cover your glory.
17 The violence done to Lebanon will overwhelm you,
and the destruction done to the animals will terrify you
because of the slaughter and violence done
to lands, cities, and all their inhabitants.

18 “What benefit is there in a carved idol
when its maker has carved it?
What benefit is there in a molded statue, a teacher of lies,
when its maker has molded it?
The one who formed it trusts himself
to make worthless idols that cannot speak.
19 ‘How horrible it will be for the one
who says to a piece of wood, “Wake up!”
and to a stone that cannot talk, “Get up!”’
Can that thing teach anyone?
Just look at it!
It’s covered with gold and silver,
but there’s absolutely no life in it.”

20 The Lord is in his holy temple.
All the earth should be silent in his presence.

A Psalm

A prayer of the prophet Habakkuk; according to shigionoth.[b]

Lord, I have heard the report about you.
Lord, I fear your work.
In the course of the years, renew it.
In the course of the years, reveal it.
In all this chaos, remember to be merciful.

God comes from Teman.
The Holy One comes from Mount Paran. Selah
His splendor covers the heavens.
His praise fills the earth.
His brightness is like the sunlight.
Rays of light stream from his hand.
That is where his power is hidden.
Diseases go ahead of him.
Plagues follow after him.
He stands and shakes the earth.
He casts a glance and startles the nations.
The oldest mountains break apart.
The ancient hills sink.
The ancient paths belong to him.
I see trouble in the tents of Cushan.
I see trembling in the tents of Midian.

The Lord is not angry with the rivers, is he?
If you are angry with the rivers,
if you are furious with the sea,
why do you ride your horses,
your chariots of salvation?
You get your bow ready for action,
for the arrows you promised. Selah
You split the land with rivers.
10 The mountains look at you. They writhe in pain.
Floodwaters pass by.
The deep ocean roars. Its waves rise up high.
11 The sun and the moon stand still.
They scatter at the light of your arrows,
at the bright lightning of your spear.

12 You march through the earth with fury.
You trample the nations in anger.
13 You go out to save your people,
to save your anointed.[c]
You crush the leader of the wicked household,
stripping him bare from head to toe. Selah
14 You pierce the leader of his gang with his own arrows.
His soldiers come like a violent storm to scatter me.
They are arrogant like those who secretly eat up the poor.
15 You march with your horses into the sea,
into the mighty raging waters.

16 I have heard, so there’s trembling within me.
At the report my lips quivered.
A rotten feeling has entered me.
I tremble where I stand.
I wait for the day of trouble
to come to the people who will attack us.
17 Even if the fig tree does not bloom
and the vines have no grapes,
even if the olive tree fails to produce
and the fields yield no food,
even if the sheep pen is empty
and the stalls have no cattle—
18 even then,
I will be happy with the Lord.
I will truly find joy in God, who saves me.
19 The Lord Almighty is my strength.
He makes my feet like those of a deer.
He makes me walk on the mountains.

For the choir director; on stringed instruments.

Revelation 9

The Fifth and Sixth Angels Blow Their Trumpets

When the fifth angel blew his trumpet, I saw a star that had fallen to earth from the sky. The star was given the key to the shaft of the bottomless pit. It opened the shaft of the bottomless pit, and smoke came out of the shaft like the smoke from a large furnace. The smoke darkened the sun and the air. Locusts came out of the smoke onto the earth, and they were given power like the power of earthly scorpions. They were told not to harm any grass, green plant, or tree on the earth. They could harm only the people who do not have the seal of God on their foreheads. They were not allowed to kill them. They were only allowed to torture them for five months. Their torture was like the pain of a scorpion’s sting. At that time people will look for death and never find it. They will long to die, but death will escape them.

The locusts looked like horses prepared for battle. They seemed to have crowns that looked like gold on their heads. Their faces were like human faces. They had hair like women’s hair and teeth like lions’ teeth. They had breastplates like iron. The noise from their wings was like the roar of chariots with many horses rushing into battle. 10 They had tails and stingers like scorpions. They had the power to hurt people with their tails for five months. 11 The king who ruled them was the angel from the bottomless pit. In Hebrew he is called Abaddon, and in Greek he is called Apollyon.

12 The first catastrophe is over. After these things there are two more catastrophes yet to come.

13 When the sixth angel blew his trumpet, I heard a voice from the four horns of the gold altar in front of God. 14 The voice said to the sixth angel who had the trumpet, “Release the four angels who are held at the great Euphrates River.” 15 The four angels who were ready for that hour, day, month, and year were released to kill one-third of humanity. 16 The soldiers on horses numbered 20,000 times 10,000. I heard how many there were.

17 In the vision that I had, the horses and their riders looked like this: The riders had breastplates that were fiery red, pale blue, and yellow. The horses had heads like lions. Fire, smoke, and sulfur came out of their mouths. 18 These three plagues—the fire, smoke, and sulfur which came out of their mouths—killed one-third of humanity. 19 The power of these horses is in their mouths and their tails. (Their tails have heads like snakes which they use to hurt people.)

20 The people who survived these plagues still did not turn to me and change the way they were thinking and acting. If they had, they would have stopped worshiping demons and idols made of gold, silver, bronze, stone, and wood, which cannot see, hear, or walk. 21 They did not turn away from committing murder, practicing witchcraft, sinning sexually, or stealing.

Psalm 137

Psalm 137

By the rivers of Babylon, we sat down and cried
as we remembered Zion.
We hung our lyres on willow trees.
It was there that those who had captured us demanded that we sing.
Those who guarded us wanted us to entertain them.
They said, “Sing a song from Zion for us!”

How could we sing the Lord’s song in a foreign land?
If I forget you, Jerusalem,
let my right hand forget how to play the lyre.
Let my tongue stick to the roof of my mouth
if I don’t remember you,
if I don’t consider Jerusalem my highest joy.

O Lord, remember the people of Edom.
Remember what they did the day Jerusalem was captured.
They said, “Tear it down! Tear it down to its foundation.”
You destructive people of Babylon,
blessed is the one who pays you back
with the same treatment you gave us.
Blessed is the one who grabs your little children
and smashes them against a rock.

Psalm 138
