Ecclesiastes 7:1-9:18, 2 Corinthians 7:8-16, Psalm 48:1-14, Proverbs 22:17-19

Today is the fourth day of September, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian and it is fantastic to be here with you today, as we dive into this week and move forward together another step, as we continue our voyage through the Bible this year. We have wound our way into some wisdom literature in the Old Testament, and that’s where we are right now. And so, we’ve worked our way through the book of Job, and are now in the book of Ecclesiastes. Which, looking at it, in terms of wisdom literature, we could be like well this just sounds like a very depressed guy who got to do a lot of things and found it all meaningless. There’s wisdom in that though, big, big wisdom in hearing from the Voice of a person who is been able to do whatever they want, whenever they want, pretty much with whomever they want. And these are some of the conclusions. And so, let’s continue that journey today, Ecclesiastes chapters 7, 8 and 9.

Commentary:

Okay, let’s talk about sorrow for a minute. What does that word mean to you, sorrow? When you think of that word and what it means and maybe even what you have or are experiencing right now. When you hear the word sorrow, is that a positive word? Is that like light up blue and like yes, this is good. Or is it like a negative, it lights up red and not, that’s to be very much avoided. Or maybe more true is that we do everything we can to avoid it, but we can’t. And so, is it just this thing that comes in life from time to time, sometimes just literally leveling us flat. And sometimes just kinda making us down for the day. Is this just something we have to endure? I mean I’ve of been in Christian ministry for very long time now and so, I’ve talked to thousands of people, and I haven’t ever met anybody that, you know, just told me that they were seeking sorrow or just looking for it. That this was their purpose, was to find sorrow but at the same time, I don’t think I’ve ever met a person that hasn’t experienced sorrow in some way. And when people describe sorrow it’s loss. Right, it's…it’s dark, it’s not light it’s dark, it’s disappointing, its sadness, it's…it’s the hardships that we face. It’s the losses that come when there’s a hole left in our lives that a person used to fill, and they’re gone, and we’re distressed. And we have been reading in the New Testament long enough to know what the apostle Paul is and what his story was. And so, we know that Paul had to experience suffering everywhere he went. But in today’s reading, Paul seems to make a distinct…distinction between suffering and sorrow. Because for most of us, when we think of sorrow, we think this is a bad thing that God would not want us to experience. And yet I quote from the apostle Paul, “the kind of sorrow God wants us to experience leads us away from sin and results in salvation. There’s no regret for that kind of sorrow, but worldly sorrow, which lacks repentance, results in spiritual death.” Okay, so Paul is saying look, there’s a distinction here. There is a kind of sorrow that leads you to repentance, which leads you to wholeness. So, another way of saying this would be that we should experience sorrow when we wake up and find our lives wandering in directions that we know are not right, that should produce these emotions that we were talking about. It should be a disappointment. It should feel like we’ve lost something, it should be distressing. Like, when we walk into sin with our eyes wide open, we should then experience the gravity of what we’re doing because we’re…we’re being a willing participant in interrupting what God is doing and inside of us. We’re betraying our source. That isn’t good and that is healthy, and that should produce sorrow because, as Paul said, it leads us away from sin and results in salvation. The kind of sorrow we’re talking about here is that we open our eyes and become aware that we are running away from God instead of running to him. And we should become aware of the implications. We are running away from what we need to survive. According to Paul, this kind of sorrow leads to repentance and repentance literally means that we change our mind, we go in a different direction, like we return to God. And so, let’s reframe sorrow as we think about this today. Like, there is no sorrow store that we can go to, go through the drive through line and get our daily dose of sorrow. Sorrow comes and we deflect and seek comfort in any way that we can. Maybe if sorrow is upon us before we do that, maybe we should wonder what is this about, because the way we handle and interpret it, will lead us to run to God or to run from God. But if we are experiencing sorrow, we ultimately want that sorrow to be comforted and the Scriptures tell us, God will heal our broken hearts, and that God will forgive us and will be patient with us. And so, may we experience the sorrow that leads to repentance.

Prayer:

And Jesus, we invite you into that, to embrace a concept like sorrow something that we spend so much of our lives and energy trying to avoid, to actually embrace it and understand that it refines and leads us somewhere, it gives us an awareness. It’s within us, something crying out that something’s wrong. And if we will embrace and find out what that is and allow your comfort to come into this place and your leadership, then you will always lead us on the narrow path that leads to life. You will only lead us in a place that is ultimately healthy for us. So, we trust you, come Holy Spirit. May we experience repentance today. We ask in Jesus name. Amen.

Prayer and Encouragements:

Hello DAB community, it’s Morning Lift. Reaching out just to give you all an update. I really appreciate all your continued prayers for me and my family. Went to court on Tuesday of this week and while that was one of the hardest days of my life, the most painful and sad days I’ve ever had to walk through. The judge pretty much gave us everything we could have asked for and it’s I say, a very good result, legally speaking and for the kids. But it was also really hard to see my wife go through what she had to go through. And I don’t wish that on anyone. I wish she had never filed the lawsuit, I wish she would have never done what’s she’s done. I wish we had never gotten separated. And I pray that God will hopefully use this humbling experience for her to soften her heart and open her up to reconciliation. I don’t really know what’s gonna happen. But I’m lifting it up to you family to pray for her, to pray for me, to pray for our kids. Very happy with the results. I get to choose a new therapist for our kids and I think that’s the best thing. And the judge agreed and that alone was, you know, a massive win. I also get to spend a week at a time with my kids. Which I was not getting before, I was getting days or hours. So, I’m just really blessed by that, it is a true praise report. And I thank you family for lifting us up in prayer. But I ask you to continue to pray for reconciliation. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.

Hi, Lorianne from South Carolina, this is His Light from Tennessee. Just wanted to chime in here and my hymnal is being heard through prayers are being heard and they are going to be lifted up before the throne room of the Lord, Jesus Christ. And you have such a sweet voice and I’m so glad you’re here, I’m so glad that you are able to reach out to the DAB community family and ask us to pray for you. It just broke my heart to think that your family members would try and harass you for money or steal things from you. That’s just not the way that our family is supposed to be. So, I am praying complete focus for you, so that you can get to that place that your mom’s cleaned out quickly, so that you can go and lock the door, put the alarm on and know that you won’t be harassed. And I just pray for you to be lifted up and that the Lord will comfort you. Just meditate on His word. Just know that He loves you and He has you in the palms of His hands and His heart and He’s holding you and loving you. And again, just because I’m listening and hearing your prayer today, which happens to be the 31st, I think you called in on, well it was played I think, on the 25th or 26th. But neither here, nor there. Bottom line, what I’m trying to say is, you will have people that are gonna continue to pray for you now and in weeks from now. Somebody that’s gonna be a little behind, they’re gonna listen and say a prayer. So, you’re covered girl. We love you. Thanks for calling.

Hey, everybody, this is Carmen from Germany. I’m just calling in to say hi. I’ve been listening since 2017, I think it was the end of 2017 when my husband left me for like, somebody 30 years young. I was just, I had the rug pulled out under my feet. I had just no idea how things were gonna go. Anyway, I did call in for prayer and I still remember Alaska Mom and Kingdom Seeker Daniel praying for me which really meant so much just to hear your name. Anyway, long story short, 6 years have gone by, my husband and I are divorced, and I did come back to a normal life. It’s been two years; it took two years but I’m living again. Because at that point you just feel like, up is down, down is up, your whole world is turned around. It’s hard to believe that you’re gonna see light at the end of the tunnel. I did have some wonderful prayer requests answered. I asked God for a really, concrete things so I knew that I could give Him the glory, He answered it the way I had requested, and He did. So, it was really exciting. So, now I can be a blessing to others. I keep hoping that I’m not gonna end up living the rest of my life alone but this time, I really want a Christian husband, my last husband was not and it’s really hard here in Germany to find somebody who is a Christian and in, you know, the later half of life. Anyway, I really enjoy hearing all of you. I pray with you, and I thought I should just touch base, so you guys know I’m here. So, Carmen in Germany sending lots of greetings. We’ve got rain and letting you know that I’m a part of this community and praying with you, thinking of you and I just love Biran’s comments. Bye everyone.

Hello, Daily Audio Bible family. I just want to call this in for a mother that called on the broadcast of the 1st of September, I heard your desperate cry for help, for your daughter Rebecca. And at this time, I want to pray for Rebecca and for you. Oh God, Heavenly Father, we thank You Lord that You hear our cries. You hear our desperate cries and that we can come before You with any petition and knowing that You’re a God of love, You’re a God of mercy. And at this time, we come before You Lord to remember Rebecca and her parents before You. You know that Rebecca wants to take her life because she’s not feeling worthy, and she doesn’t feel that she should continue to live in this world. Lord, we pray that Your Holy Spirit would touch her, deliver her from this desires. I pray God that You would make her conscience of Your love, the love her parents has for her. The love You want her to enjoy. God, we pray complete deliverance and wholeness for her, even now. And we thank You Lord for touching her and for encouraging her parent’s hearts as well. That they would continue to believe that You are able to do more than they can ask, think or imagine. Oh God, we just give You praise, we give You thanks now. We cover her on Your blood. In Jesus name. Amen.

Ecclesiastes 7-9

Wisdom

A good name is better than fine perfume,(A)
and the day of death better than the day of birth.(B)
It is better to go to a house of mourning
than to go to a house of feasting,
for death(C) is the destiny(D) of everyone;
the living should take this to heart.
Frustration is better than laughter,(E)
because a sad face is good for the heart.
The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning,
but the heart of fools is in the house of pleasure.(F)
It is better to heed the rebuke(G) of a wise person
than to listen to the song of fools.
Like the crackling of thorns(H) under the pot,
so is the laughter(I) of fools.
This too is meaningless.

Extortion turns a wise person into a fool,
and a bribe(J) corrupts the heart.

The end of a matter is better than its beginning,
and patience(K) is better than pride.
Do not be quickly provoked(L) in your spirit,
for anger resides in the lap of fools.(M)

10 Do not say, “Why were the old days(N) better than these?”
For it is not wise to ask such questions.

11 Wisdom, like an inheritance, is a good thing(O)
and benefits those who see the sun.(P)
12 Wisdom is a shelter
as money is a shelter,
but the advantage of knowledge is this:
Wisdom preserves those who have it.

13 Consider what God has done:(Q)

Who can straighten
what he has made crooked?(R)
14 When times are good, be happy;
but when times are bad, consider this:
God has made the one
as well as the other.(S)
Therefore, no one can discover
anything about their future.

15 In this meaningless life(T) of mine I have seen both of these:

the righteous perishing in their righteousness,
and the wicked living long in their wickedness.(U)
16 Do not be overrighteous,
neither be overwise—
why destroy yourself?
17 Do not be overwicked,
and do not be a fool—
why die before your time?(V)
18 It is good to grasp the one
and not let go of the other.
Whoever fears God(W) will avoid all extremes.[a]

19 Wisdom(X) makes one wise person more powerful(Y)
than ten rulers in a city.

20 Indeed, there is no one on earth who is righteous,(Z)
no one who does what is right and never sins.(AA)

21 Do not pay attention to every word people say,
or you(AB) may hear your servant cursing you—
22 for you know in your heart
that many times you yourself have cursed others.

23 All this I tested by wisdom and I said,

“I am determined to be wise”(AC)
but this was beyond me.
24 Whatever exists is far off and most profound—
who can discover it?(AD)
25 So I turned my mind to understand,
to investigate and to search out wisdom and the scheme of things(AE)
and to understand the stupidity of wickedness
and the madness of folly.(AF)

26 I find more bitter than death
the woman who is a snare,(AG)
whose heart is a trap
and whose hands are chains.
The man who pleases God will escape her,
but the sinner she will ensnare.(AH)

27 “Look,” says the Teacher,[b](AI) “this is what I have discovered:

“Adding one thing to another to discover the scheme of things—
28 while I was still searching
but not finding—
I found one upright man among a thousand,
but not one upright woman(AJ) among them all.
29 This only have I found:
God created mankind upright,
but they have gone in search of many schemes.”

Who is like the wise?
Who knows the explanation of things?
A person’s wisdom brightens their face
and changes its hard appearance.

Obey the King

Obey the king’s command, I say, because you took an oath before God. Do not be in a hurry to leave the king’s presence.(AK) Do not stand up for a bad cause, for he will do whatever he pleases. Since a king’s word is supreme, who can say to him, “What are you doing?(AL)

Whoever obeys his command will come to no harm,
and the wise heart will know the proper time and procedure.
For there is a proper time and procedure for every matter,(AM)
though a person may be weighed down by misery.

Since no one knows the future,
who can tell someone else what is to come?
As no one has power over the wind to contain it,
so[c] no one has power over the time of their death.
As no one is discharged in time of war,
so wickedness will not release those who practice it.

All this I saw, as I applied my mind to everything done under the sun. There is a time when a man lords it over others to his own[d] hurt. 10 Then too, I saw the wicked buried(AN)—those who used to come and go from the holy place and receive praise[e] in the city where they did this. This too is meaningless.

11 When the sentence for a crime is not quickly carried out, people’s hearts are filled with schemes to do wrong. 12 Although a wicked person who commits a hundred crimes may live a long time, I know that it will go better(AO) with those who fear God,(AP) who are reverent before him.(AQ) 13 Yet because the wicked do not fear God,(AR) it will not go well with them, and their days(AS) will not lengthen like a shadow.

14 There is something else meaningless that occurs on earth: the righteous who get what the wicked deserve, and the wicked who get what the righteous deserve.(AT) This too, I say, is meaningless.(AU) 15 So I commend the enjoyment of life(AV), because there is nothing better for a person under the sun than to eat and drink(AW) and be glad.(AX) Then joy will accompany them in their toil all the days of the life God has given them under the sun.

16 When I applied my mind to know wisdom(AY) and to observe the labor that is done on earth(AZ)—people getting no sleep day or night— 17 then I saw all that God has done.(BA) No one can comprehend what goes on under the sun. Despite all their efforts to search it out, no one can discover its meaning. Even if the wise claim they know, they cannot really comprehend it.(BB)

A Common Destiny for All

So I reflected on all this and concluded that the righteous and the wise and what they do are in God’s hands, but no one knows whether love or hate awaits them.(BC) All share a common destiny—the righteous and the wicked, the good and the bad,[f] the clean and the unclean, those who offer sacrifices and those who do not.

As it is with the good,
so with the sinful;
as it is with those who take oaths,
so with those who are afraid to take them.(BD)

This is the evil in everything that happens under the sun: The same destiny overtakes all.(BE) The hearts of people, moreover, are full of evil and there is madness in their hearts while they live,(BF) and afterward they join the dead.(BG) Anyone who is among the living has hope[g]—even a live dog is better off than a dead lion!

For the living know that they will die,
but the dead know nothing;(BH)
they have no further reward,
and even their name(BI) is forgotten.(BJ)
Their love, their hate
and their jealousy have long since vanished;
never again will they have a part
in anything that happens under the sun.(BK)

Go, eat your food with gladness, and drink your wine(BL) with a joyful heart,(BM) for God has already approved what you do. Always be clothed in white,(BN) and always anoint your head with oil. Enjoy life with your wife,(BO) whom you love, all the days of this meaningless life that God has given you under the sun—all your meaningless days. For this is your lot(BP) in life and in your toilsome labor under the sun. 10 Whatever(BQ) your hand finds to do, do it with all your might,(BR) for in the realm of the dead,(BS) where you are going, there is neither working nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom.(BT)

11 I have seen something else under the sun:

The race is not to the swift
or the battle to the strong,(BU)
nor does food come to the wise(BV)
or wealth to the brilliant
or favor to the learned;
but time and chance(BW) happen to them all.(BX)

12 Moreover, no one knows when their hour will come:

As fish are caught in a cruel net,
or birds are taken in a snare,
so people are trapped by evil times(BY)
that fall unexpectedly upon them.(BZ)

Wisdom Better Than Folly

13 I also saw under the sun this example of wisdom(CA) that greatly impressed me: 14 There was once a small city with only a few people in it. And a powerful king came against it, surrounded it and built huge siege works against it. 15 Now there lived in that city a man poor but wise, and he saved the city by his wisdom. But nobody remembered that poor man.(CB) 16 So I said, “Wisdom is better than strength.” But the poor man’s wisdom is despised, and his words are no longer heeded.(CC)

17 The quiet words of the wise are more to be heeded
than the shouts of a ruler of fools.
18 Wisdom(CD) is better than weapons of war,
but one sinner destroys much good.

2 Corinthians 7:8-16

Even if I caused you sorrow by my letter,(A) I do not regret it. Though I did regret it—I see that my letter hurt you, but only for a little while— yet now I am happy, not because you were made sorry, but because your sorrow led you to repentance. For you became sorrowful as God intended and so were not harmed in any way by us. 10 Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation(B) and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death. 11 See what this godly sorrow has produced in you: what earnestness, what eagerness to clear yourselves, what indignation, what alarm, what longing, what concern,(C) what readiness to see justice done. At every point you have proved yourselves to be innocent in this matter. 12 So even though I wrote to you,(D) it was neither on account of the one who did the wrong(E) nor on account of the injured party, but rather that before God you could see for yourselves how devoted to us you are. 13 By all this we are encouraged.

In addition to our own encouragement, we were especially delighted to see how happy Titus(F) was, because his spirit has been refreshed by all of you. 14 I had boasted to him about you,(G) and you have not embarrassed me. But just as everything we said to you was true, so our boasting about you to Titus(H) has proved to be true as well. 15 And his affection for you is all the greater when he remembers that you were all obedient,(I) receiving him with fear and trembling.(J) 16 I am glad I can have complete confidence in you.(K)

Psalm 48

Psalm 48[a]

A song. A psalm of the Sons of Korah.

Great is the Lord,(A) and most worthy of praise,(B)
in the city of our God,(C) his holy mountain.(D)

Beautiful(E) in its loftiness,
the joy of the whole earth,
like the heights of Zaphon[b](F) is Mount Zion,(G)
the city of the Great King.(H)
God is in her citadels;(I)
he has shown himself to be her fortress.(J)

When the kings joined forces,
when they advanced together,(K)
they saw her and were astounded;
they fled in terror.(L)
Trembling seized(M) them there,
pain like that of a woman in labor.(N)
You destroyed them like ships of Tarshish(O)
shattered by an east wind.(P)

As we have heard,
so we have seen
in the city of the Lord Almighty,
in the city of our God:
God makes her secure
forever.[c](Q)

Within your temple, O God,
we meditate(R) on your unfailing love.(S)
10 Like your name,(T) O God,
your praise reaches to the ends of the earth;(U)
your right hand is filled with righteousness.
11 Mount Zion rejoices,
the villages of Judah are glad
because of your judgments.(V)

12 Walk about Zion, go around her,
count her towers,(W)
13 consider well her ramparts,(X)
view her citadels,(Y)
that you may tell of them
to the next generation.(Z)

14 For this God is our God for ever and ever;
he will be our guide(AA) even to the end.

Proverbs 22:17-19

Thirty Sayings of the Wise

Saying 1

17 Pay attention(A) and turn your ear to the sayings of the wise;(B)
apply your heart to what I teach,(C)
18 for it is pleasing when you keep them in your heart
and have all of them ready on your lips.
19 So that your trust may be in the Lord,
I teach you today, even you.

The Daily Audio Bible Reading for Sunday September 3, 2023 (NIV)

Ecclesiastes 4-6

Oppression, Toil, Friendlessness

Again I looked and saw all the oppression(A) that was taking place under the sun:

I saw the tears of the oppressed—
and they have no comforter;
power was on the side of their oppressors—
and they have no comforter.(B)
And I declared that the dead,(C)
who had already died,
are happier than the living,
who are still alive.(D)
But better than both
is the one who has never been born,(E)
who has not seen the evil
that is done under the sun.(F)

And I saw that all toil and all achievement spring from one person’s envy of another. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.(G)

Fools fold their hands(H)
and ruin themselves.
Better one handful with tranquillity
than two handfuls with toil(I)
and chasing after the wind.

Again I saw something meaningless under the sun:

There was a man all alone;
he had neither son nor brother.
There was no end to his toil,
yet his eyes were not content(J) with his wealth.
“For whom am I toiling,” he asked,
“and why am I depriving myself of enjoyment?”
This too is meaningless—
a miserable business!

Two are better than one,
because they have a good return for their labor:
10 If either of them falls down,
one can help the other up.
But pity anyone who falls
and has no one to help them up.
11 Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm.
But how can one keep warm alone?
12 Though one may be overpowered,
two can defend themselves.
A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.

Advancement Is Meaningless

13 Better a poor but wise youth than an old but foolish king who no longer knows how to heed a warning. 14 The youth may have come from prison to the kingship, or he may have been born in poverty within his kingdom. 15 I saw that all who lived and walked under the sun followed the youth, the king’s successor. 16 There was no end to all the people who were before them. But those who came later were not pleased with the successor. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.

Fulfill Your Vow to God

[a]Guard your steps when you go to the house of God. Go near to listen rather than to offer the sacrifice of fools, who do not know that they do wrong.

Do not be quick with your mouth,
do not be hasty in your heart
to utter anything before God.(K)
God is in heaven
and you are on earth,
so let your words be few.(L)
A dream(M) comes when there are many cares,
and many words mark the speech of a fool.(N)

When you make a vow to God, do not delay to fulfill it.(O) He has no pleasure in fools; fulfill your vow.(P) It is better not to make a vow than to make one and not fulfill it.(Q) Do not let your mouth lead you into sin. And do not protest to the temple messenger, “My vow was a mistake.” Why should God be angry at what you say and destroy the work of your hands? Much dreaming and many words are meaningless. Therefore fear God.(R)

Riches Are Meaningless

If you see the poor oppressed(S) in a district, and justice and rights denied, do not be surprised at such things; for one official is eyed by a higher one, and over them both are others higher still. The increase from the land is taken by all; the king himself profits from the fields.

10 Whoever loves money never has enough;
whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with their income.
This too is meaningless.

11 As goods increase,
so do those who consume them.
And what benefit are they to the owners
except to feast their eyes on them?

12 The sleep of a laborer is sweet,
whether they eat little or much,
but as for the rich, their abundance
permits them no sleep.(T)

13 I have seen a grievous evil under the sun:(U)

wealth hoarded to the harm of its owners,
14 or wealth lost through some misfortune,
so that when they have children
there is nothing left for them to inherit.
15 Everyone comes naked from their mother’s womb,
and as everyone comes, so they depart.(V)
They take nothing from their toil(W)
that they can carry in their hands.(X)

16 This too is a grievous evil:

As everyone comes, so they depart,
and what do they gain,
since they toil for the wind?(Y)
17 All their days they eat in darkness,
with great frustration, affliction and anger.

18 This is what I have observed to be good: that it is appropriate for a person to eat, to drink(Z) and to find satisfaction in their toilsome labor(AA) under the sun during the few days of life God has given them—for this is their lot. 19 Moreover, when God gives someone wealth and possessions,(AB) and the ability to enjoy them,(AC) to accept their lot(AD) and be happy in their toil—this is a gift of God.(AE) 20 They seldom reflect on the days of their life, because God keeps them occupied with gladness of heart.(AF)

I have seen another evil under the sun, and it weighs heavily on mankind: God gives some people wealth, possessions and honor, so that they lack nothing their hearts desire, but God does not grant them the ability to enjoy them,(AG) and strangers enjoy them instead. This is meaningless, a grievous evil.(AH)

A man may have a hundred children and live many years; yet no matter how long he lives, if he cannot enjoy his prosperity and does not receive proper burial, I say that a stillborn(AI) child is better off than he.(AJ) It comes without meaning, it departs in darkness, and in darkness its name is shrouded. Though it never saw the sun or knew anything, it has more rest than does that man— even if he lives a thousand years twice over but fails to enjoy his prosperity. Do not all go to the same place?(AK)

Everyone’s toil is for their mouth,
yet their appetite is never satisfied.(AL)
What advantage have the wise over fools?(AM)
What do the poor gain
by knowing how to conduct themselves before others?
Better what the eye sees
than the roving of the appetite.
This too is meaningless,
a chasing after the wind.(AN)

10 Whatever exists has already been named,(AO)
and what humanity is has been known;
no one can contend
with someone who is stronger.
11 The more the words,
the less the meaning,
and how does that profit anyone?

12 For who knows what is good for a person in life, during the few and meaningless days(AP) they pass through like a shadow?(AQ) Who can tell them what will happen under the sun after they are gone?

2 Corinthians 6:14-7:7

Warning Against Idolatry

14 Do not be yoked together(A) with unbelievers.(B) For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness?(C) 15 What harmony is there between Christ and Belial[a]?(D) Or what does a believer(E) have in common with an unbeliever?(F) 16 What agreement is there between the temple of God and idols?(G) For we are the temple(H) of the living God.(I) As God has said:

“I will live with them
and walk among them,
and I will be their God,
and they will be my people.”[b](J)

17 Therefore,

“Come out from them(K)
and be separate,
says the Lord.
Touch no unclean thing,
and I will receive you.”[c](L)

18 And,

“I will be a Father to you,
and you will be my sons and daughters,(M)
says the Lord Almighty.”[d](N)

Therefore, since we have these promises,(O) dear friends,(P) let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness(Q) out of reverence for God.

Paul’s Joy Over the Church’s Repentance

Make room for us in your hearts.(R) We have wronged no one, we have corrupted no one, we have exploited no one. I do not say this to condemn you; I have said before that you have such a place in our hearts(S) that we would live or die with you. I have spoken to you with great frankness; I take great pride in you.(T) I am greatly encouraged;(U) in all our troubles my joy knows no bounds.(V)

For when we came into Macedonia,(W) we had no rest, but we were harassed at every turn(X)—conflicts on the outside, fears within.(Y) But God, who comforts the downcast,(Z) comforted us by the coming of Titus,(AA) and not only by his coming but also by the comfort you had given him. He told us about your longing for me, your deep sorrow, your ardent concern for me, so that my joy was greater than ever.

Psalm 47

Psalm 47[a]

For the director of music. Of the Sons of Korah. A psalm.

Clap your hands,(A) all you nations;
shout to God with cries of joy.(B)

For the Lord Most High(C) is awesome,(D)
the great King(E) over all the earth.
He subdued(F) nations under us,
peoples under our feet.
He chose our inheritance(G) for us,
the pride of Jacob,(H) whom he loved.[b]

God has ascended(I) amid shouts of joy,(J)
the Lord amid the sounding of trumpets.(K)
Sing praises(L) to God, sing praises;
sing praises to our King, sing praises.
For God is the King of all the earth;(M)
sing to him a psalm(N) of praise.

God reigns(O) over the nations;
God is seated on his holy throne.(P)

as the people of the God of Abraham,
for the kings[c] of the earth belong to God;(Q)

Introduction to the Book of Ecclesiastes continued:

And Ecclesiastes contains these musings of an older, wise person who has had nothing withheld from him and he’s reflecting back on the meaninglessness of all of it, without God. So, as we enter into Ecclesiastes, let’s invite the Holy Spirit to reveal where we’re chasing things, in exchange for the promise of a comforter life. Chasing things, like chasing the wind, expecting these things to do what only God can do. We might find like Solomon, that there is a time and a purpose for everything under heaven, and that maybe we’ve been chasing the wind, because Ecclesiastes shows us Jesus taught us. We can have the whole world; we can gain the whole world and lose our soul. We can gain the whole world and still have nothing and be empty. A fully achieved life by worldly standards, can still be lonely, anxious and depressed. Having everything without God is having nothing. And so, we begin Ecclesiastes chapters 1, 2 and 3.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word. We thank You for another week. And as the weeks go by, it becomes clear that there are fewer weeks then…then would, then have gone by already, at least on this journey, at least in this year of our lives, and we thank You that we can mark the time, we mark Your faithfulness, we thank You for Your kindness and patience with us as we continue to grow and be transformed through this process over time of being made holy and set apart to You. This process we call sanctification. So, we open ourselves to You and say, come Holy Spirit and continue to sanctify us, continue to transform us, continue to open our eyes that we might see. We pray this in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Prayer and Encouragements:

Hi DAB family, I need your prayers for my son. He is 18, he still lives at home. But he has been fighting me and my husband about church and God, the way that we’ve raised him for the last year. And now he has told me that he’s an atheist and he doesn’t believe in my God and he if he did, he wouldn’t serve Him. And my heart is broken, and I feel like I’ve failed as a parent. But I believe God’s calling me to just hand him over and trust Him and just love. Show my son love and show the character of God. But I need your prayers. I need, please God. Cover him, protect him, bring him back. And I thank You God for the prodigal son, because I’m the prodigal son and I have come back, and I pray God. I pray for all of our kids. I pray in Jesus name that Satan is stopped in his tracks. Please help us, Lord. Amen.

Good morning DAB family, this is Karen in Florida. I’m asking for prayers this morning for my dear young friend, Veronica in Canada. Veronica is my son’s friend. She is currently in hospital in __ bridge Columbia. Veronica is an addict. My son and her met while being part of the music industry in Winnipeg. She’s like a sister to him. My son was also an addict but by the grace and mercy of our Lord, has been clean now for over 6 years. It is only by the grace of God that he is okay. And for that I am truly grateful. But many other families are not so fortunate and blessed as I have been. I don’t take that lightly. I’m asking for my dear Veronica, for prayers. She’s suffered her whole life with traumatic events. She grew up with addictive parents. Her mother is now clean and living for the Lord. I know she is also praying. As a first nations woman, she has struggled her whole life to find her solid ground. Her beloved sister committed suicide. Many tragedies that most of us will never have to endure. Brian has been reading from Job this week. And one of the things that really stood out was how Job really wanted to hear from the Lord. All of his friend’s good intentions were not going to suffice. He needs to hear from the Almighty himself. Only God’s unending mercies and interventions can finally deliver Veronica. I only ask that you please pray that the Lord would intervene in a mighty way, that all the demonic strongholds would be broken in her life and that she would finally be set free. This may be her last chance. What seems very hopeless to me is not too big for our Lord. Thank you for praying.

Hey family, this is Prodigal. I’m calling to pray for Agent of Grace, called on the 23rd I think and, and I’ve heard prayers for you. So, I’m praying for you. But this is really for the husbands. The ones who are mistreating and abusing their wives, their life partners because they can’t see through the veil of alcohol. So, I was there bros. It sucks. And I was terribly abusive verbally and psychologically and I, in retrospect I was crushing the spirit of my angel. And that’s a terrible thing. Until one day, she simply was gone. Just poof, gone. And I was here and seven or eight years whatever, since she left. And that’s a pain every day. So, imagine that woman not there. And she’s better off happy with someone who really loves her and treats her well. And imagine if you called yourself the names you called her and treated her the way you, you treat her. Imagine being beaten like that every single day. And that ask yourself, is this worth it. Is this what Jesus wants? Am I, am I doing anything right. And I gotta tell you guys, it destroys you. It destroys everything around you. And you can be the aroma of Christ. You can’t even, all you smell like is burden. So, I would encourage you all to take a step back and imagine that space empty, instead of filled with a loving heart. Cause it’s gonna be empty. It’s the Prodigal, signing out. God bless you all. I love you. Bye.

Hi, everyone, it’s Kristy in Kentucky. I’ve been a little behind. As many of you know, my beautiful husband was diagnosed with ALS last year. So, our days are really busy. And we are just continuing to pray and believe in God’s healing for him. I wanted to call in today to say thank you to Brian, for your commentary, especially today when you talked about the aroma of Christ which Paul talked about in his letters to the Corinthians. I just wanted to say that yesterday, the 27th I was actually getting ready for my day and the essence, the aroma of honeysuckle filled the room. And I looked around, trying to figure out where it had come from and there was nothing except that I realized that it was the beautiful word of God that I was being enveloped in at that moment. Oh Brian, so today to hear that it just blessed my heart. So many times, I have been out and even just looked at someone and just seen the love of Christ on them. And like you said, a smile, I’d ask them, you love Jesus don’t you, and they say yes. It’s just amazing how the love of Christ can be exhibited through countless smiles, smell, aroma. Some of my favorites, patchouli takes me back to being a teenager. Always has been one of my favorites. Frankincense and Myrrh room spray, oh, family, it will absolutely change the atmosphere of the room. _ ah, got to be my favorite. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve prayed over someone and anointed them with Bitner oil, the same oil that Mary anointed the feet of Jesus with. Ah, the aroma. Christ, I pray that each of your feel His love today, in a very special way. I love you guys.

Ecclesiastes 1:1-3:22, 2 Corinthians 6:1-13, Psalm 46:1-11, Proverbs 22:15

Today is the second day of the month of September, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian. It is wonderful to be here with you today as we get ourselves moved into this brand-new month. And even as we’re moving into this month, we’re ending a week. So, it’s always transition, isn’t it? And speaking of transitions, we concluded the book of Job, yesterday, which means we have to transition into some new territory. Kinda sticking in the same kind of theme.

Introduction to the Book of Ecclesiastes:

Today, we’ll move into the book of Ecclesiastes. And both Job and Ecclesiastes, this as well as Proverbs and the Song of Solomon and some of the Psalms, these are part of a grouping of books that are known as wisdom literature. So, this book that we’re about to read Ecclesiastes, traditionally has been kind of connected with Solomon. And there’s scholarly debate about this for lots of reasons. There’s scholarly debate about lots of things for lots of reasons. But the book probably was originally with Solomon and was translated and updated and…and that still happens today, as we translate and modernize the language as time goes forward. But we know that Solomon was considered to be an incredibly wise man, in fact, the wisest man in the world. And we’ve read about his reign and how he kind of sat at the apex of ancient Israel’s civilization. He was at the top; everything went downhill after Solomon. And Solomon went downhill before the end of his life. But we read of Solomon, and he was a very powerful, very wealthy man of his time. He was very much in demand, audiences with him were being pursued from leaders from throughout the known world of the time. And he was able to do whatever his heart desired to pursue, no matter what he dreamed up. Like, that, he was the king with all of the power, at a time when Israel was very powerful. So, nothing was off-limits to the king and his dad, King David, had unified Israel and brought them to a place of authority and prominence and power and peace. So, Solomon had incredible resources at his disposal. He had a thousand of the most beautiful women in all of the world as wives and concubines. He had a royalty, he wore a crown upon his head, he had unbelievable power, and he had the wisdom of God. And so, as we go into this book Ecclesiastes, knowing who we’re talking about here. All of a sudden, we start reading Ecclesiastes and everything seems out of character. How could a person who has it all come to these conclusions. Like, we might read Ecclesiastes, and think okay, this is what Solomon has to say at the end of his life, this is going to be a memoir of greatness, it’s more of a depressing and hopeless rant. But if we’ll stay with it and look underneath it all, go below the surface, Ecclesiastes gives us this very thoughtful, very penetrating look into the human heart. Because we’re all pursuing things, right, dreams and goals in our lives, and there’s always somebody to look at as if they have what we wanted, and they got it easy and we’re clawing and scratching for anything. It’s real easy to get into this comparison thing and begin to think if I just had the resources, if I just had the knowledge, if I just had the right partner, if I just, if I could just get my life and all of its pieces in alignment. But no matter what we get in alignment there’s always going to be somebody that’s doing way better. But with Solomon here, we’re looking at a guy who, it would be hard to find an example of someone who has more. King Solomon has the power of life and death in his hand, unbelievable wealth there’s no shortage of resource for anything that he could desire to do. He has all of these wives and women that have been sourced the most beautiful women, like he has, this is a person who we can look at from a human perspective and say okay, that’s the top of the pile, there isn’t any higher to go in the, in the human experience. Very, very, very few people experience that. We’re always able to say, if I just had that, life will be better. If I could do this, life would be better. What if we got it all though? What if we actually got it all, then what? This is what Ecclesiastes exposes and explores. Solomon had pursued whatever he wanted, achieved whatever he set his hand to, and then later in his life the beautiful harem of women from all over the world that he loved, ended up seducing his heart away from God and into idolatry.

Ecclesiastes 1-3

Everything Is Meaningless

The words of the Teacher,[a](A) son of David, king in Jerusalem:(B)

“Meaningless! Meaningless!”
says the Teacher.
“Utterly meaningless!
Everything is meaningless.”(C)

What do people gain from all their labors
at which they toil under the sun?(D)
Generations come and generations go,
but the earth remains forever.(E)
The sun rises and the sun sets,
and hurries back to where it rises.(F)
The wind blows to the south
and turns to the north;
round and round it goes,
ever returning on its course.
All streams flow into the sea,
yet the sea is never full.
To the place the streams come from,
there they return again.(G)
All things are wearisome,
more than one can say.
The eye never has enough of seeing,(H)
nor the ear its fill of hearing.
What has been will be again,
what has been done will be done again;(I)
there is nothing new under the sun.
10 Is there anything of which one can say,
“Look! This is something new”?
It was here already, long ago;
it was here before our time.
11 No one remembers the former generations,(J)
and even those yet to come
will not be remembered
by those who follow them.(K)

Wisdom Is Meaningless

12 I, the Teacher,(L) was king over Israel in Jerusalem.(M) 13 I applied my mind to study and to explore by wisdom all that is done under the heavens.(N) What a heavy burden God has laid on mankind!(O) 14 I have seen all the things that are done under the sun; all of them are meaningless, a chasing after the wind.(P)

15 What is crooked cannot be straightened;(Q)
what is lacking cannot be counted.

16 I said to myself, “Look, I have increased in wisdom more than anyone who has ruled over Jerusalem before me;(R) I have experienced much of wisdom and knowledge.” 17 Then I applied myself to the understanding of wisdom,(S) and also of madness and folly,(T) but I learned that this, too, is a chasing after the wind.

18 For with much wisdom comes much sorrow;(U)
the more knowledge, the more grief.(V)

Pleasures Are Meaningless

I said to myself, “Come now, I will test you with pleasure(W) to find out what is good.” But that also proved to be meaningless. “Laughter,”(X) I said, “is madness. And what does pleasure accomplish?” I tried cheering myself with wine,(Y) and embracing folly(Z)—my mind still guiding me with wisdom. I wanted to see what was good for people to do under the heavens during the few days of their lives.

I undertook great projects: I built houses for myself(AA) and planted vineyards.(AB) I made gardens and parks and planted all kinds of fruit trees in them. I made reservoirs to water groves of flourishing trees. I bought male and female slaves and had other slaves(AC) who were born in my house. I also owned more herds and flocks than anyone in Jerusalem before me. I amassed silver and gold(AD) for myself, and the treasure of kings and provinces.(AE) I acquired male and female singers,(AF) and a harem[b] as well—the delights of a man’s heart. I became greater by far than anyone in Jerusalem(AG) before me.(AH) In all this my wisdom stayed with me.

10 I denied myself nothing my eyes desired;
I refused my heart no pleasure.
My heart took delight in all my labor,
and this was the reward for all my toil.
11 Yet when I surveyed all that my hands had done
and what I had toiled to achieve,
everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind;(AI)
nothing was gained under the sun.(AJ)

Wisdom and Folly Are Meaningless

12 Then I turned my thoughts to consider wisdom,
and also madness and folly.(AK)
What more can the king’s successor do
than what has already been done?(AL)
13 I saw that wisdom(AM) is better than folly,(AN)
just as light is better than darkness.
14 The wise have eyes in their heads,
while the fool walks in the darkness;
but I came to realize
that the same fate overtakes them both.(AO)

15 Then I said to myself,

“The fate of the fool will overtake me also.
What then do I gain by being wise?”(AP)
I said to myself,
“This too is meaningless.”
16 For the wise, like the fool, will not be long remembered;(AQ)
the days have already come when both have been forgotten.(AR)
Like the fool, the wise too must die!(AS)

Toil Is Meaningless

17 So I hated life, because the work that is done under the sun was grievous to me. All of it is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.(AT) 18 I hated all the things I had toiled for under the sun, because I must leave them to the one who comes after me.(AU) 19 And who knows whether that person will be wise or foolish?(AV) Yet they will have control over all the fruit of my toil into which I have poured my effort and skill under the sun. This too is meaningless. 20 So my heart began to despair over all my toilsome labor under the sun. 21 For a person may labor with wisdom, knowledge and skill, and then they must leave all they own to another who has not toiled for it. This too is meaningless and a great misfortune. 22 What do people get for all the toil and anxious striving with which they labor under the sun?(AW) 23 All their days their work is grief and pain;(AX) even at night their minds do not rest.(AY) This too is meaningless.

24 A person can do nothing better than to eat and drink(AZ) and find satisfaction in their own toil.(BA) This too, I see, is from the hand of God,(BB) 25 for without him, who can eat or find enjoyment?(BC) 26 To the person who pleases him, God gives wisdom,(BD) knowledge and happiness, but to the sinner he gives the task of gathering and storing up wealth(BE) to hand it over to the one who pleases God.(BF) This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.

A Time for Everything

There is a time(BG) for everything,
and a season for every activity under the heavens:

a time to be born and a time to die,
a time to plant and a time to uproot,(BH)
a time to kill(BI) and a time to heal,
a time to tear down and a time to build,
a time to weep and a time to laugh,
a time to mourn and a time to dance,
a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them,
a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing,
a time to search and a time to give up,
a time to keep and a time to throw away,
a time to tear and a time to mend,
a time to be silent(BJ) and a time to speak,
a time to love and a time to hate,
a time for war and a time for peace.

What do workers gain from their toil?(BK) 10 I have seen the burden God has laid on the human race.(BL) 11 He has made everything beautiful in its time.(BM) He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet[c] no one can fathom(BN) what God has done from beginning to end.(BO) 12 I know that there is nothing better for people than to be happy and to do good while they live. 13 That each of them may eat and drink,(BP) and find satisfaction(BQ) in all their toil—this is the gift of God.(BR) 14 I know that everything God does will endure forever; nothing can be added to it and nothing taken from it. God does it so that people will fear him.(BS)

15 Whatever is has already been,(BT)
and what will be has been before;(BU)
and God will call the past to account.[d]

16 And I saw something else under the sun:

In the place of judgment—wickedness was there,
in the place of justice—wickedness was there.

17 I said to myself,

“God will bring into judgment(BV)
both the righteous and the wicked,
for there will be a time for every activity,
a time to judge every deed.”(BW)

18 I also said to myself, “As for humans, God tests them so that they may see that they are like the animals.(BX) 19 Surely the fate of human beings(BY) is like that of the animals; the same fate awaits them both: As one dies, so dies the other. All have the same breath[e]; humans have no advantage over animals. Everything is meaningless. 20 All go to the same place; all come from dust, and to dust all return.(BZ) 21 Who knows if the human spirit rises upward(CA) and if the spirit of the animal goes down into the earth?”

22 So I saw that there is nothing better for a person than to enjoy their work,(CB) because that is their lot.(CC) For who can bring them to see what will happen after them?

2 Corinthians 6:1-13

As God’s co-workers(A) we urge you not to receive God’s grace in vain.(B) For he says,

“In the time of my favor I heard you,
and in the day of salvation I helped you.”[a](C)

I tell you, now is the time of God’s favor, now is the day of salvation.

Paul’s Hardships

We put no stumbling block in anyone’s path,(D) so that our ministry will not be discredited. Rather, as servants of God we commend ourselves in every way: in great endurance; in troubles, hardships and distresses; in beatings, imprisonments(E) and riots; in hard work, sleepless nights and hunger;(F) in purity, understanding, patience and kindness; in the Holy Spirit(G) and in sincere love;(H) in truthful speech(I) and in the power of God;(J) with weapons of righteousness(K) in the right hand and in the left; through glory and dishonor,(L) bad report(M) and good report; genuine, yet regarded as impostors;(N) known, yet regarded as unknown; dying,(O) and yet we live on;(P) beaten, and yet not killed; 10 sorrowful, yet always rejoicing;(Q) poor, yet making many rich;(R) having nothing,(S) and yet possessing everything.(T)

11 We have spoken freely to you, Corinthians, and opened wide our hearts to you.(U) 12 We are not withholding our affection from you, but you are withholding yours from us. 13 As a fair exchange—I speak as to my children(V)—open wide your hearts(W) also.

Job 40:1-42:17, 2 Corinthians 5:11-21, Psalms 45:1-17, Proverbs 22:14

Today is the 1st day of September welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I am Brian it is wonderful to be here with you today we are launching ourselves into the ninth month of the year. That is how far we have traveled together. Today is the 244th day of the year and the territory that we have been working our way through in the Old Testament has been the book of Job. And Job is coming into this new month with us but not for long. We will conclude the book of Job today. And, so let’s dive in. Job chapters 40 through 42.

Commentary:

Okay, so we concluded the book of Job today, a very famous book about suffering and we’ve gone through the whole thing and…and…and we…we watched Job’s story. We know Job’s story. We know the tragedy. And then we spent the book listening to Job and…and we listened to a lot of Job’s questions, a lot of things that he wanted to know, and we heard Job tell us everything that he did know. And then we also heard Job’s friends tell everything that they thought that they knew about God and for that matter all that they thought that they knew about Job. But then in the end Job got what he wanted, which was to…an audience, to be in the presence of God, speaking to God. And it was Job’s intention that he had all these questions that he would present before God and that God would then answer for Himself back to Job, but instead God shows up with questions of His own and He asks those questions, and it becomes pretty clear, we’re talking about a different level. Like the kinds of questions that we have about why am I suffering, why is this pain, why was I betrayed, why did I lose that person, why did this happen to me? Our questions are about our pain. God comes in with these cosmic questions revealing there is so much more going on than we know and very quickly Job realizes he didn’t know what he was talking about at all. And all those arguments, all of those defenses, all of those questions, all of the things that he’s been saying out loud to his friends, things that he wants to say to God, he gets in God’s presence and those things don’t need to be said or asked anymore. When we suffer, we cry out to God and the expectation is that He will bring relief, that He will simply make it go away. And He does sometimes. But what if He doesn’t? What if there is more going on? What if this is escorting us to the next place? We have to wonder. Does God…does God enjoy looking down upon the earth and watching suffering? Is that like…He created people to suffer? Is that what’s going on here? Or is the truth that the difficult seasons that we face in our lives, difficult as they may be, become the bedrock foundation of our character. But we don’t like to endure. And when we have to endure and it’s painful endurance and there’s suffering or hardship involved or obstacles or opposition or intimidation involved then we wonder why. Why me? Why this is happening to me and when we’re not getting the answers that we’re looking for after the same fashion that Job was looking for his answers, we become frustrated. It’s just that we begin to subtly judge God. We wonder if He can be actually trusted. And that’s a really weird place, to be the judge of God. That is a really weird place because that makes us the voice of the accuser. And that’s an important piece to look at because there is a character in this story that is the accuser. And that is not the position that we want to take in our lives. In the end, Job had a final thing to say to God. “I had only heard about you before but now I have seen you with my own eyes, and I take back everything I said. I sit in dust and ashes to show how sorry I am.” That is quite a different place then where Job began. And the change, the difference was the presence of God. So, Job has taken us as it is intended to into the deeper parts of the pain-and-suffering of…of humanity, looking for answers because we do. And does it give us all these nice tidy little answers for why all the things happen in our lives that we face? It does not. We got to hear the best of human wisdom and then God shows up with questions, not answers. And despite this, Job gets his answers. He gets what he wanted, and he realizes what he wanted wasn’t answers, what he wanted was God. And maybe if we contemplate that and arrive at the same kind of conclusions Job came to we will find a safe place in our stormy seasons. And may we find like Job, that in God’s presence things are true wonderful for us to comprehend.

Prayer:

Father, we invite you into that. We’d like a book in this Bible that had a list of all of the answers to all of the pertinent questions of life with footnotes and all kinds of explanations, especially in the area of hardship and difficulty, especially in the area of…of physical or mental anguish. We’d love all that knowledge, and that knowledge may not help us a single bit. What we are learning is that, whether in joy or in suffering, the place that we long to be is in your presence. Job completely reinterpreted everything in your presence. And, so, we come to you for comfort, for protection, for direction, for leadership, and for a safe place for our hearts to be. And we ask that you lead us into all truth. We pray this in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Announcements:

dailyaudiobible.com, that is home. That’s where you can find out what’s happening. And the Daily Audio Bible app is probably an even better…better version of home. And you can download that free from the app store that is associated with your phone or your tablet or whatever. Just search for Daily Audio Bible and should be able to find it and go from there.

Check out the different sections like the Community section. This is where the Prayer Wall is and that is always available to we who are here in this community around the Global Campfire. And that is a comfort as things happen that we weren’t anticipating that we didn’t see. And it’s hard to go through all that stuff alone. Sometimes it’s good to reach out and have brothers and sisters walk along side of us. And it’s also good to come back and rejoice. It’s good to give God glory. It’s good to share the good news and the good stories of how God has been faithful to us and that can be done at the Prayer Wall as well. So, check that out.

If you want to partner with the Daily Audio Bible, well, first of all, thank you. We couldn’t possibly do this at all if we weren’t in this together. And, so, thank you. There is a link on the homepage at dailyaudiobible.com. If you’re using the app you can press the Give button in the upper right-hand corner or the mailing address is PO Box 1996 Spring Hill Tennessee 37174.

And, as always, if you have a prayer request or encouragement you can hit the Hotline button in the app. That’s little red button up at the top or there are a number of numbers you can call depending on where you are in the world or if you’re feeling really adventurous you can call any of them from anywhere. In the Americas 877-942-4253 is the number. In the UK or Europe 44-20-3608-8078. And if you are in Australia or that part of the world 61-3-8820-5459 is the number to dial.

And that’s it for today. I’m Brian I love you not be waiting for you here tomorrow.

Job 40-42

40 The Lord said to Job:(A)

“Will the one who contends with the Almighty(B) correct him?(C)
Let him who accuses God answer him!”(D)

Then Job answered the Lord:

“I am unworthy(E)—how can I reply to you?
I put my hand over my mouth.(F)
I spoke once, but I have no answer(G)
twice, but I will say no more.”(H)

Then the Lord spoke to Job out of the storm:(I)

“Brace yourself like a man;
I will question you,
and you shall answer me.(J)

“Would you discredit my justice?(K)
Would you condemn me to justify yourself?(L)
Do you have an arm like God’s,(M)
and can your voice(N) thunder like his?(O)
10 Then adorn yourself with glory and splendor,
and clothe yourself in honor and majesty.(P)
11 Unleash the fury of your wrath,(Q)
look at all who are proud and bring them low,(R)
12 look at all who are proud(S) and humble them,(T)
crush(U) the wicked where they stand.
13 Bury them all in the dust together;(V)
shroud their faces in the grave.(W)
14 Then I myself will admit to you
that your own right hand can save you.(X)

15 “Look at Behemoth,
which I made(Y) along with you
and which feeds on grass like an ox.(Z)
16 What strength(AA) it has in its loins,
what power in the muscles of its belly!(AB)
17 Its tail sways like a cedar;
the sinews of its thighs are close-knit.(AC)
18 Its bones are tubes of bronze,
its limbs(AD) like rods of iron.(AE)
19 It ranks first among the works of God,(AF)
yet its Maker(AG) can approach it with his sword.(AH)
20 The hills bring it their produce,(AI)
and all the wild animals play(AJ) nearby.(AK)
21 Under the lotus plants it lies,
hidden among the reeds(AL) in the marsh.(AM)
22 The lotuses conceal it in their shadow;
the poplars by the stream(AN) surround it.
23 A raging river(AO) does not alarm it;
it is secure, though the Jordan(AP) should surge against its mouth.
24 Can anyone capture it by the eyes,
or trap it and pierce its nose?(AQ)

41 [a]“Can you pull in Leviathan(AR) with a fishhook(AS)
or tie down its tongue with a rope?
Can you put a cord through its nose(AT)
or pierce its jaw with a hook?(AU)
Will it keep begging you for mercy?(AV)
Will it speak to you with gentle words?
Will it make an agreement with you
for you to take it as your slave for life?(AW)
Can you make a pet of it like a bird
or put it on a leash for the young women in your house?
Will traders barter for it?
Will they divide it up among the merchants?
Can you fill its hide with harpoons
or its head with fishing spears?(AX)
If you lay a hand on it,
you will remember the struggle and never do it again!(AY)
Any hope of subduing it is false;
the mere sight of it is overpowering.(AZ)
10 No one is fierce enough to rouse it.(BA)
Who then is able to stand against me?(BB)
11 Who has a claim against me that I must pay?(BC)
Everything under heaven belongs to me.(BD)

12 “I will not fail to speak of Leviathan’s limbs,(BE)
its strength(BF) and its graceful form.
13 Who can strip off its outer coat?
Who can penetrate its double coat of armor[b]?(BG)
14 Who dares open the doors of its mouth,(BH)
ringed about with fearsome teeth?
15 Its back has[c] rows of shields
tightly sealed together;(BI)
16 each is so close to the next
that no air can pass between.
17 They are joined fast to one another;
they cling together and cannot be parted.
18 Its snorting throws out flashes of light;
its eyes are like the rays of dawn.(BJ)
19 Flames(BK) stream from its mouth;
sparks of fire shoot out.
20 Smoke pours from its nostrils(BL)
as from a boiling pot over burning reeds.
21 Its breath(BM) sets coals ablaze,
and flames dart from its mouth.(BN)
22 Strength(BO) resides in its neck;
dismay goes before it.
23 The folds of its flesh are tightly joined;
they are firm and immovable.
24 Its chest is hard as rock,
hard as a lower millstone.(BP)
25 When it rises up, the mighty are terrified;(BQ)
they retreat before its thrashing.(BR)
26 The sword that reaches it has no effect,
nor does the spear or the dart or the javelin.(BS)
27 Iron it treats like straw(BT)
and bronze like rotten wood.
28 Arrows do not make it flee;(BU)
slingstones are like chaff to it.
29 A club seems to it but a piece of straw;(BV)
it laughs(BW) at the rattling of the lance.
30 Its undersides are jagged potsherds,
leaving a trail in the mud like a threshing sledge.(BX)
31 It makes the depths churn like a boiling caldron(BY)
and stirs up the sea like a pot of ointment.(BZ)
32 It leaves a glistening wake behind it;
one would think the deep had white hair.
33 Nothing on earth is its equal(CA)
a creature without fear.
34 It looks down on all that are haughty;(CB)
it is king over all that are proud.(CC)

Job

42 Then Job replied to the Lord:

“I know that you can do all things;(CD)
no purpose of yours can be thwarted.(CE)
You asked, ‘Who is this that obscures my plans without knowledge?’(CF)
Surely I spoke of things I did not understand,
things too wonderful for me to know.(CG)

“You said, ‘Listen now, and I will speak;
I will question you,
and you shall answer me.’(CH)
My ears had heard of you(CI)
but now my eyes have seen you.(CJ)
Therefore I despise myself(CK)
and repent(CL) in dust and ashes.”(CM)

Epilogue

After the Lord had said these things to Job(CN), he said to Eliphaz the Temanite, “I am angry with you and your two friends,(CO) because you have not spoken the truth about me, as my servant Job has.(CP) So now take seven bulls and seven rams(CQ) and go to my servant Job(CR) and sacrifice a burnt offering(CS) for yourselves. My servant Job will pray for you, and I will accept his prayer(CT) and not deal with you according to your folly.(CU) You have not spoken the truth about me, as my servant Job has.”(CV) So Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite(CW) did what the Lord told them; and the Lord accepted Job’s prayer.(CX)

10 After Job had prayed for his friends, the Lord restored his fortunes(CY) and gave him twice as much as he had before.(CZ) 11 All his brothers and sisters and everyone who had known him before(DA) came and ate with him in his house. They comforted and consoled him over all the trouble the Lord had brought on him,(DB) and each one gave him a piece of silver[d] and a gold ring.

12 The Lord blessed the latter part of Job’s life more than the former part. He had fourteen thousand sheep, six thousand camels, a thousand yoke of oxen and a thousand donkeys. 13 And he also had seven sons and three daughters. 14 The first daughter he named Jemimah, the second Keziah and the third Keren-Happuch. 15 Nowhere in all the land were there found women as beautiful as Job’s daughters, and their father granted them an inheritance along with their brothers.

16 After this, Job lived a hundred and forty years; he saw his children and their children to the fourth generation. 17 And so Job died, an old man and full of years.(DC)

2 Corinthians 5:11-21

The Ministry of Reconciliation

11 Since, then, we know what it is to fear the Lord,(A) we try to persuade others. What we are is plain to God, and I hope it is also plain to your conscience.(B) 12 We are not trying to commend ourselves to you again,(C) but are giving you an opportunity to take pride in us,(D) so that you can answer those who take pride in what is seen rather than in what is in the heart. 13 If we are “out of our mind,”(E) as some say, it is for God; if we are in our right mind, it is for you. 14 For Christ’s love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died.(F) 15 And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves(G) but for him who died for them(H) and was raised again.

16 So from now on we regard no one from a worldly(I) point of view. Though we once regarded Christ in this way, we do so no longer. 17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ,(J) the new creation(K) has come:[a] The old has gone, the new is here!(L) 18 All this is from God,(M) who reconciled us to himself through Christ(N) and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: 19 that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them.(O) And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. 20 We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors,(P) as though God were making his appeal through us.(Q) We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God.(R) 21 God made him who had no sin(S) to be sin[b] for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.(T)

Psalm 45

Psalm 45[a]

For the director of music. To the tune of “Lilies.” Of the Sons of Korah. A maskil.[b] A wedding song.(A)

My heart is stirred by a noble theme
as I recite my verses for the king;
my tongue is the pen of a skillful writer.

You are the most excellent of men
and your lips have been anointed with grace,(B)
since God has blessed you forever.(C)

Gird your sword(D) on your side, you mighty one;(E)
clothe yourself with splendor and majesty.(F)
In your majesty ride forth victoriously(G)
in the cause of truth, humility and justice;(H)
let your right hand(I) achieve awesome deeds.(J)
Let your sharp arrows(K) pierce the hearts(L) of the king’s enemies;(M)
let the nations fall beneath your feet.
Your throne, O God,[c] will last for ever and ever;(N)
a scepter of justice will be the scepter of your kingdom.
You love righteousness(O) and hate wickedness;(P)
therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions
by anointing(Q) you with the oil of joy.(R)
All your robes are fragrant(S) with myrrh(T) and aloes(U) and cassia;(V)
from palaces adorned with ivory(W)
the music of the strings(X) makes you glad.
Daughters of kings(Y) are among your honored women;
at your right hand(Z) is the royal bride(AA) in gold of Ophir.(AB)

10 Listen, daughter,(AC) and pay careful attention:(AD)
Forget your people(AE) and your father’s house.
11 Let the king be enthralled by your beauty;(AF)
honor(AG) him, for he is your lord.(AH)
12 The city of Tyre(AI) will come with a gift,[d](AJ)
people of wealth will seek your favor.
13 All glorious(AK) is the princess within her chamber;
her gown is interwoven with gold.(AL)
14 In embroidered garments(AM) she is led to the king;(AN)
her virgin companions(AO) follow her—
those brought to be with her.
15 Led in with joy and gladness,(AP)
they enter the palace of the king.

16 Your sons will take the place of your fathers;
you will make them princes(AQ) throughout the land.

17 I will perpetuate your memory through all generations;(AR)
therefore the nations will praise you(AS) for ever and ever.(AT)
